When thinking of Shaoxing, the first person that comes to mind is naturally Lu Xun. From Baicao Garden to Sanwei Bookstore, from Kong Yiji's fennel beans to his hometown's community opera, the hometown connection woven into Lu Xun's culture is evident everywhere. This ancient cultural city, founded in the Xia Dynasty, boasts a rich 2,500-year history. The ancient Zhejiang Grand Canal is its bloodline, and Kuaiji Mountain is its backbone. This land has nurtured literary giants like Qiu Jin, Cai Yuanpei, and Zhou Enlai. The black-sailed boats, black felt hats, and black dried vegetables are hallmarks of Shaoxing's character. Compared to other southern water towns, Shaoxing boasts a more scholarly atmosphere and the aroma of rice wine.
March and April, with its warm weather and blooming flowers, are the best times to visit Shaoxing. The Wuxie Scenic Area in Zhuji City, Shaoxing, is renowned for its natural beauty. April and May are typically flood season, especially during heavy rains, when water levels surge and the scenery becomes even more stunning, making this the best time to visit. Famous festivals and celebrations, such as the Lanting International Calligraphy Festival and the Houshan Peach Blossom Festival, often take place during this time.
After the plum rains, the summer heat gradually subsides in October, the so-called "October Spring," making it a great time for travel. The Shaoxing Yellow Wine Festival and Hutang Osmanthus Festival are often held during this time. The worst time to travel: July is the hottest month in Shaoxing, and January is the coldest.
March and April are warm and blossoming, so regular spring clothing is fine. Bring a light jacket as the temperature fluctuates between morning and evening. Late June and early July are the plum rain season, while early to mid-August is typhoon season, with frequent downpours. Bring an umbrella when visiting Shaoxing during these months.
The weather turns colder in September and October, so you should pack extra clothes. Shaoxing's winters, like those in other parts of Jiangnan, are bitterly cold and damp, so even northerners should wear thick, warm clothing.
The prices in Shaoxing are not high, and the average consumption is 200-250 yuan per person per day.
