There are some spectacular places to take pictures along the road. Great shots of the ski resort especially at sunset.

This is a must take drive while you're in Breckenridge. You will follow what used to be the train tracks through this mountain pass - Gorgeous views all around. It can be tight at times, but go slowly and you'll be glad you went. Easily one of the 10 best things to do while there.

Drive over this pass in the Fall, if possible! It is a fabulous drive from Breckenridge to the old town of Como; viewing of the aspen colors is really quite something. In summer, there are also some good hiking trails along the way.

Boreas Pass Road goes from the south end of Breckenridge, over the pass to the tiny town of Como (near Fairplay). It was originally a narrow gauge railroad line, to it has moderate grades. Big views and great hikes!
Note: This road is only open in the summer (May - October) and is used by cross country skiers in the winter. Check before going up in the spring and early summer. I have seen it closed by snow drifts in July!!

Follow the path of the first railroad tracks to cross the continental divide. Don't plan on going fast. Watch out for hikers, cyclists and oncoming traffic and enjoy the vistas. The re-constructed water tank and a visitors' center on the actual divide provide a couple of obvious places to stop. Most street vehciles can handle the road, but SUVs are best-suited for the trek.

This is a great drive just outside of Breckenridge, Colorado. If you just go to the summit and then return to Breckenridge, you can make the trip in just a few hours. The road turns into a dirt road just outside of town. There are a few areas of the road that are narrow and only provide space for one car at a time but most of the road has enough room for two cars to pass each other. There are also some bumpy areas as you get closer to the summit but if you take it slow you will be fine. We made the drive in a SUV that was not 4WD and had no problems. There are some old buildings at the top to stop and take pictures of. There were some rest rooms at the top but when we were there they were locked.

We drove from Breckenridge to the peak & then continued to Como. The drive was bumpy, but certainly well worth the drive. Views were phenomenal. We stopped at the peak & enjoyed the history. Past the peak we stopped at Rocky Point Trail- (#6 I think). This was a a short easy trail - great views.

We drove this road looking for an adjacent hiking trail. It was very scenic and enjoyable, so you can go as far as you like, then turn back. You can pull over when it is safe to do so, for pictures.
Fun little drive and very scenic. Be sure to take the side roads to the adjacent mountains to see the opposite side of the valley, especially at the bottom of the hill hear Breckenridge.

We took the Boreas Pass Road from Breckenridge to Como then continued to FairPlay and returned on route 9. The dirt road porton was fantastic with great views and opportunities to explore nature along the road. We had a hand out from the visitors center that chronicled the interesting history of the narrow gauge railroad the operated on the road bed from the 1860's to the late 1930's to support the mining industry. Be sure to stop at the pass where there are some original log buildings that remain from a community of 150+ that served the railroad. The beauty and solitude of this place is well worth the bumpy journey.

This is a fun drive; best in an SUV as a fair amount of the road is rough and rocky. Great views around every corner and lots of places to pull over. There aren't many folks on this road so it's nice to have some space to yourself to enjoy it. There are several nice areas to camp along the way and you can get back in woods where you aren't visible from the road. This was one of our favorite things we did while in Breckenridge.

Rode my bike up Boreas Pass today and the colors are as pretty as I've seen anywhere in Colorado. Don't miss this year. About 6.5 miles up the dirt is the Boreas Pass Summit at about 11,500 feet. Ride up was a gentle grade from Breck side. Very dusty today but soooooooo worth it!

This scenic road is a great way to get stunning views of Breckenridge Ski mountains and the Blue Rive valley. I would recommend stopping in Fairplay own the way back to see the South Park Historical center.

This pass is a beautiful trip, that goes between South Park (Como) and Breckenridge. The road however is dirt and is passable by SUV, but there are some rough areas, so anything with low ground clearance could encounter some troubles. There are several bicyclists that ride the pass, so keep your eyes open.
At the top of the pass, there is an old train depot complete with buildings that you can walk from building to building, reading about the history of the pass.
This ride is especially beautiful in the fall, there are many aspen trees that are gorgeous when they begin turning, don't forget your camera, you will be disappointed.

Easy drive over unpaved sometimes rough roads but views were nice. Just wished we caught the changing colors of the Aspens and other trees on the trails

We biked the road in mid June when it was closed to vehicles. It was so much fun. About 6 miles to the top with a manageable grade. Stunning views on the way up and even better at the peak.

We were going to Breckenridge from Colorado Springs so we decided to take the pass with some friends. We started at Como and first looked around the small town at the railroad structures. The road is OK for 2 wheel drive vehicles and you just have to watch for a few potholes. You stop at the top at the section house and read all the info on what it was like. Was surprised that 150 people lived up there at one time. There are a few hiking trails along the road. Well worth the trip if heading to Breckenridge from Hwy 285.

We went over fro Breckenridge to US 285 and back on the highway. Lots of nice wildflowers and wonderful vistas. It is a dirt road but does NOT require 4WD - we were in a sedan.

The views are extraordinary. The dirt road is fairly well kept. Once you get over the continental divide the road is a little worse (if coming from Breckenridge). Lots of great stops to see vistas or just enjoy the trees and wildlife. Definitely worth doing. We did it in the evening and not crowded at all.

The Boreas Pass Road was a lovely and scenic drive. The mountains were very picturesque. Boreas Pass is another opportunity to visit the great divide. I will say the majority of the road was not paved and rough in some places. Allow enough time to compensate for the slow drive—it is worth it.

Golden aspens and beautiful mountain peaks. Be sure to stop on south side where you can view a section of the old railroad rail. Great to bike on summer and fall and XC ski in the winter. Gentle grade. Goes above tree line to a winter hut.

This is a lovely drive at any time of the year, but especially in the fall when the aspen turn yellow. You can do this in any high clearance vehicle with good tires. There are some steep and rough spots, so just be careful. Go up in September if you can. It is stunning! Take a picnic with you-there are lots of nice places to stop.

Climbing up to the Boreas Pass from Breckenridge should most definitely be on the "must do" list. First you get sweeping views of The Resort and the town. As you climb higher and higher the temperature fluctuates, leaves become more golden, the Aspens are everywhere, and the road goes super skinny. What sights to see though! Wildlife is abundant, and on this day in early October we got caught in a snowstorm. It just added to the beauty of it all as the way back down the Aspen Pines had turned into true Christmas trees. Fresh mountain air is simply the best.

Heading south from Breckenridge the Boreas Pass Road leads over the Continental Divide down to the small community of Como. This was once a wagon route for stage coaches but turned into a narrow-gauge railway in 1882 with
trains running until 1937. It was then converted to a vehicular road in 1952. It is appropriate that at the start of the road in Breck you will see the High Line Railroad Park museum where a Colorado & Southern (C&S) steam locomotive as well as carriages are on display.
We drove from Breck to the Continental Divide but now further. It is truly the drive that was he attraction. It was the wrong season for the fall aspen colors and having had a relatively low-snow winter as well as a dry summer the wildflowers were not at their best. Still our group enjoyed the drive up. The road does get bumpy and rutted in areas; keep your distance from the car ahead in dry conditions to minimize the dust getting into your car. It is a narrow road so be aware of cars coming from the opposite direction and be prepared to be the one to pull over to side depending on which vehicle has the space to do so.
There were quite a few cyclists too that we had to avoid during our drive.
There are numerous overlooks into the Breckenridge valley on the drive and it is safest to find a safe place to park and get out to enjoy the view and take pictures.

Boreas Pass Road is a nearly 20-mile stretch that traces the path of the Pacific Railroad and rises to a summit at the Continental Divide. Along the way, Boreas Pass offers unbeatable views of the Blue River Valley and Tenmile Range. We started in Breckenridge and made the whole loop drive to Como and back on the highway. We happened to be here in the fall and were able to enjoy seeing golden yellow aspens light their way. Travelers can hike, bike or drive it.
Whether you start in Breck or Como, the drive will be exciting and relatively quick. The route is suitable for low-clearance 2WD cars, although it does get a little bumpy in some areas, for the most part, it’s an easy, high-alpine drive. It summits at 11,481 feet above sea level.

Always a gorgeous drive- but last week was the best. If you can- make the drive all the way
over to Como. So different that heading to pass from Breck.
No need right now for 4 wheel drive.

We rented a Hyundai Elantra and had no problems on this pass. BEAUTIFUL views. We did once, stopping and taking pictures, and then circled back to Breck. Then again with my grandparents on day we left to back to Denver airport. Without stopping, about an hour.

We drove on parts of the Boreas Pass Road a few times on the way in and out of town and back to our rented house when visiting. Once we attempted to drive further, but then the paved road stopped, and the speed limit was very low, and we decided not to continue. And we've been to so many different passes by then, we decided not to go.

Although this is a gravel road, it is perfectly safe in a regular car. Great view around every bend. Not crowded, even on a summer holiday weekend. Biking and hiking for the more adventurous also.

We love the sketchy drives on switchback roads, so we thought this would be a fun drive on our way down to Buena Vista. It is a very rough dirt road and yes there are a few cool (scary) drops from the narrow road, but for most of the 15 miles it was just bumpy, dusty and too long. We had previously come from Rocky Mountain National Park's Old Fall River Road and that was great! I wish we would have skipped this, we wouldn't have missed anything and would have saved a bunch of time that day. We did see a Moose on the road from very far away, but it ran quickly into the woods before we could get a real good look. We did not stop for any hikes.

We recently spent several days in Breck and were told the Boreas Pass road was a must see during the fall. We took our Jeep Wrangler and drove the entire pass road all the way to the highway east of Fairplay. Absolutely stunning views, gorgeous tunnels of Aspen trees in full fall glory, and fun history at the top of the pass. It was quite dusty and there were lots of vehicles but it was very enjoyable.

This is a gorgeous drive out of Breckenridge. Very nice hikes are easily accessible from this road. This would be a great drive in early morning or evening to see wildlife. Can be rough in areas and make sure tires are in good shape. Very narrow in places so keep to the speed limit.

A short drive from Breckenridge but beware of narrow and bumpy road. Great place to walk around at the peak and take pictures.

Remember learning about the Continental Divide in school? Water on one side ends up in the Atlantic and on the other side ends up in the Pacific. This gravel road takes you up there. The road is narrow and you won't drive over 15 mph. Imagine the pioneers traveling there with horse-drawn wagons! We saw people camping off the side of the road. The scenery is magnificent!

We spent nearly 1 1/2 hours driving this from breckenridge. The views are amazing at every turn. We made it up to an old water tank from the late 1800's for trains. We found an abandon wood structure on one of our stops when we searched around the area. The views of Breck and the surrounding areas are simply amazing. Lots of running water adds to the mystery of this ride. love love love it !!!

can be a very rough road up to the Continental Divide, We hiked up the mountain Mt. Baldy for a fantastic view. Go slow and enjoy.

We drove Boreas Pass Rd to the Continential Divide. It was gravel, but well-maintained (in September). There were narrow spots, but always easy for one car to get to a wider spot for passing. The views along the way were spectacular as was the view at the top. There were several trail choices at the top, which we enjoyed even with small children. Highly recommend this!

Very nice drive. The views have to be seen in person to appreciate. Post card picture ops. Second week in September some Aspen were yellow and falling some still green. it's doable with 2WD car but it wouldn't be my first choice. Vehicle going up has the right of way, this may come into play.

We were in Breckenridge in mid-September. The fall colors were spectacular! The pictures from the camera just didn't do it justice.

This was a beautiful drive up the mountain. The vistas were spectacular! The only downside is that once we made it to the gravel road- the road narrowed and we weren't comfortable continuing on bc there really wasn't room for cars going in both directions so we turned around. Definitely worth it- just be cautious.

Hard dirt road, personally, was not a pleasant drive but glad I did it. Many narrow areas which makes oncoming traffic interesting . Many parts are like driving over a washboard. If your the one driving, watch out for the over the speed limit doers coming around the bends.

For a real adventure, take the drive over Boreas Pass road all the way to Como! While only about 15 miles, it will take you an hour or so due to the steep, rocky, and narrow road conditions. Best use a 4 wheel drive and this drive is not for the nervous driver (not unusual to meet an oncoming car and one of you has to pull over as close to the road's edge as possible). Road is also not accessible during winter but has fantastic views in the summer and shoulder months. A couple of big pluses are (1) the views during the drive and at the top of the pass and (2) the historic town of Como over on the other side - some interesting displays from the mining/gold rush days including the railway station where trains came in from Leadville or Denver and some other historic buildings. Take Hwy 285 back to Breck from Como and enjoy another scenic trip - this time over Hoosier Pass!

Winding trails that climb to the top of the mountains on the other side of the Colorado-9 highway. Offer majestic top-views of the Peak 7,8,9 and 10. Part of the road is closed in the winter.

Nice drive to look around at the over-indulgent huge houses. Who needs that much space to live??? The drive was nice and gave us great views at higher elevations.

Went to seethe fall colors but were disappointed as it had rained and snowed the previous week and we got to see only 40% of what would have been simply gorgeous. It's worth a trip in the fall in spite of the dirt road for 6-8 miles which is pretty rocky in places

This is an absolutely , fantastic great view and enroute to the highest peak to view or ski near by when weather permits .

This is the week to take the drive the aspen trees are in full color. Go slow and be courteous of other drivers, hikers and bikers.

The road was originally a narrow gauge railroad line connecting Como and Breck. As such the grade is never that steep making it excellent for pedaling, cross country skiing and the like. I've driven this road in the fall for fantastic foliage and snowshoed and skied it in the winter.
This week I snow shoed it at night - not sure if that's allowed - and it was easy to imagine an old steam engine coming down the line. There are some great view of the town of Breckenridge and ski area as well as the milky way.

Long and bumpy road from Como, CO pays off. It was great experience. Driving was nor boring. Great views starting early near Como, CO. The farther we went, the views were more interesting. We've stopped for lunch-picnic in the middle of the trail. Even food tasted better. The weather was great, not too warm, not too cold.
Good thing that I wasn't driving, so I was able to take many photos with my camera.
The Pass is also very interesting. It's hard to imagine, that the road we've taken, there was a railroad going up to the mountains.
There are few nice small houses. I wish to live inside one for a while.
I recommend this place.
RomanP

It is a dirt road high mountain pass so be prepared to drive slow, brake often and a free "massage". Several view points on the way but the best part is the fall colors, the reds, the oranges, the yellows and the greens all make this place worth a drive. Aspens flanked on both sides of the road at a couple of spots on the pass makes it look gorgeous. Choose the right week for a drive. Check the news! Takes over an hour with the stoppages. Breckenridge to Hwy 285 (close to Jefferson or Fairplay).

My 4 year old is obsessed with trains so we set out up Boreas Pass to see the water tower, the old train car at the top and the city of Como on the other side of the pass (small town that seemed deserted, but was really cool to walk through to see the train depot, rail cars, and old roundhouse). He got to see his trains (we also went to South Park City that had more trains) and I enjoyed the amazing views. I would like to go back to actually hike through it.

If your looking for a dirt and gravel back road with beautiful views this is your drive. The road does get Rocky so take your time. Lots of hiking trails along the way.

This is a great drive in the fall. There are a ton of aspens along the road and the views of Breckinridge are grand. The road is passable by 2 wheel drive vehicles during the summer and fall months. There is also some history here too. Boreas Pass was one of the major routes into Summit County in the 19th and early 20th century. There are numerous old mines and an old water tank. The pass is also great access for climbing Bald Mountain. A nice drive is to go over Boreas Pass to Fairplay and then back to Breck over Hoosier Pass.

Since our hotel -- Gold Point -- was up at the top of Boreas Pass Road, we had no real choice but to travel it daily. It was spectacular every time, and made us glad that we were beyond and far above the hubbub of town. We also strolled the hiking trail and took in the breath taking views each evening, and took about a million gorgeous photos of the mountain at various times of the day.

We drove from Breckenridge to FairPlay - full length of Boreas Pass Road in September 2018. The Aspens were beautiful in full display of their fall color. The road from Breckenridge to the peak is best with a 4 wheel drive vehicle but okay for all. The road from the peak to FairPlay is smoother. Lots of spots for beautiful photos and hiking at the peak.

I'm always stunned by the incedible beauty of the Rockies. Being from the Eastern US, we have nothing that quite compares. This pass is one of the most beautiful, located right in the Breck area.

As you head out of Breckenridge on Main St (CO-9) and make a left onto Boreas Pass Rd, you'll have a normal, paved road for a couple of miles before it turns into a packed gravel/dirt road.
May be a bit tough without 4WD, but still doable in any average sedan as long as you can handle the jarring ride.
Great for hiking, too!

My husband & I enjoyed every second of this beautiful drive! Such amazing views! Can't wait to bring our girls back for the beautiful scenery!

Boreas Pass Road is an amazing drive. And when the paved road stops, becomes an amazing hike. Easy access from downtown Breckenridge. if you want to drive the entire length, I'd recommend an ATV.

What a great drive with awesome views of the area. The road starts as a paved road and then turns to gravel and is very rough in places. You need to proceed very slowly and there are parts that only one car can get through. It is very close to Downtown and easy to get to.

I drove over the pass with a couple of adult family members. Beautiful scenery, particularly the high wide open meadows as we reached the pass itself. Very different scenery on the other side looking toward the front range - meadows, ranching, etc. We made several short hikes along the way to view the wildflowers up close; still going strong late July.
Stopped for an excellent lunch at Salon Mexico in Fairplay and spent several hours at the wonderful South Park Museum.

We try to drive up Boreas pass a few times/year. It is stunning in the fall. This year, the changing aspens were spectacular. There are 2-3 areas where you feel like you are driving through a tunnel of aspens. In the summer, the wild flowers are beautiful. There are a lot of fun hikes and the ranger station and old railcar at the top of the pass are always fun to explore.

This is a dirt road pass but a low clearance vehicle will have no problems on it. The views are spectacular but caution with the high altitude. Acclimate to the altitude before you vent on it!

The road from Breck is paved at bottom, dirt higher up, and rocky in a few spots, but is totally navigable. There are several trailheads along the way, and remnants of historic mining and railroad days. At the top views are great, and an easy trail takes you up to Black Powder Pass where the views are even more expansive. Distance a bit under three miles, and you can continue a bit longer to French Pass overlook. Other options for trails to Boreas and Baldy mountains in the area, but Black Powder is a nice family option. Watch out for ground squirrels they'll chew your pack LOL.
You can return to Breck or make a loop down the other side to the small town of Como, and then through Fairplay back to Breck. Makes a nice scenic drive.

I reviewed this once already, six years ago, but having changed my mind a bit about a rating, I'm going to give this another try.
The views of the mountains are gorgeous, and this really is something you will want to do, if you have a stout vehicle. The road has become rougher over the years, and it is still as narrow as it ever was. With some of the notched formations with limited visibility through which you must drive to get to the pass, I cannot recommend it for the faint-hearted. On the basis of the roughness, I am reducing my former rating from Excellent to Very Good.
But if that does not deter you, then go ahead and do this; you'll not regret it if your vehicle does not regret it.

It wasnt really that great in our opinion. Not many great views and a very bumpy trail for not much reward lol. We went out of the way for it and wish we hadnt.

access in Breckenridge and the road does become gravel and slow going, but it is beautiful if you're looking for great scenery. We clicked a pic at the Continental Divide sign. Follow the road and end back up in Fairplay and then stop at gorgeous Hoosier's pass on the way back north to Breckenridge.

Lovely road with many winding turns and one-way access. Not for the faint of heart but well worth it for the views.

We hiked this on the last section to the Breckinridge Ice skating rink about 3 miles 90% downhill. The aspens are beautiful in season and key point to follow the Illinois when you have trail options, well marked.

Parts of the road was really rocky and bumpy, I was afraid I would damage my car. When we finally made it to Boreas Pass, I was disappointed with the view. There are many scenic spots in the area that do not require a treacherous road.

Excellent trails and views for snowshoeing and cross country skiing. No charge. Not crowded. One of the best in Breckenridge.

Went during the latter part of September and the Leaves were just gorgeous. Came up from the Breckenridge side and stopped at the top before returning down the same way - you can also go completely over the pass and loop back around, but we chose not to. Very scenic.

Great day trip to spend either a little or a long time! A simple drive up and down to take in the sites or plenty of spots to park and hike/adventure! Highly recommend. 4 wheel drive recommended, wouldn’t be great for small cars.

This was a fabulous drive to enjoy the fall colors. The road got pretty skinny at times, but added to the fun of the drive.

Loved this pass so much in August with the views and wildflowers that we brought friends back with us in October and went over just after it had snowed. In August it was raining a bit, but we made it in our Mazda6 sedan! No 4 or all-wheel drive 😉. In October we had a Subaru Outback in the snow, but never had to use the 4-wheel drive. Just as spectacular in the snow with golden aspens as it was with flowers in August. If you take it all the way over you will get a taste of the micro climates on each side of the mountain and it’s all highway back to Breck from FairPlay. Highly recommend this trip!

Beautiful afternoon drive. Also was able to scope out several potential secluded spots for remote tent camping in the future. The road was super easy in an all-wheel drive vehicle.

Drive on the route trains took a century ago. Vistas on both sides of the pass and a nice stop at the top to walk through old buildings. Be sure to go down the south side into South Park (a huge grassy valley) and on to Fairplay before returning to Breckenridge on the highway.

We wanted to take our kids on a scenic drive while on vacation, and decided to do the Boreas Pass out of Breck. The road is undoubtedly rough, but the views are incredible. It was absolutely worth the drive. We took the pass from Breck all the way to Park County, and then continued into Fairplay/ historic South Park. We even saw some wildlife. If you are staying in Breckenridge during summer, I would recommend this for a couple hour drive/ activity. We did take Hoosier Pass on the way homes which is paved, and much quicker for a return route.

Great way to get family members not as mobile as the rest out and up the mountain. Road not paved but most of it in pretty good shape. Amazing views and plentiful turn-offs if you want to stop and get out.

Breathtaking views narrow one lane road in spots but has plenty of spots to pull over and take turns on the narrow path. We had a Toyota Corolla and had no trouble on the road. It is a rough road slow moving with no guardrails. We highly recommended this drive.

We drove up here to see the aspens. The gravel road was bumpy, dusty, rocky and at times, only one car can pass through. We didn't have any idea how far the top of the pass was, so we ended up turning around. It would have been nice to have some type of mile markers/signs to tell you how far it was to the top. The Fall colors were nice, but you can see pretty aspens in Breckenridge and driving down to Frisco. Some people were in a big hurry and they left huge amounts of dust in their wake.

We got married at the Lodge & Spa Breckenridge and drove up Boreas Pass for some amazing mountain backdrops.

A short nice walk on this road takes you pass the train station then the ice rink then the parking lost past the ice rink go to the far corner and follow the signs to see the Troll! It’s huge and well worth seeing it. So cool!!

My dad always took the scenic route in Colorado and as a kid I never appreciated it. 😉This was my first one to Boreas Pass and it didn’t disappoint. The views spectacular and weather perfect. Take your time, don’t drive a big oversized pickup or other massive vehicle. The road is bumpy and very rough in places so take it slow and enjoy!!

We had 8 of us for this. 4 teen boys (16,16, 14, 14) and my 70 year old parents. Nice little walk/loop and beautiful views. The loop is under 3 miles. We started from the parking lot counterclockwise. This is on a road so expect to share with bikers and some cars. This part had a gradual incline and spots to stop and take photos, rest if needed. It was in full sun pretty much the whole way to the turn off of the road. At this point my parents turned back and walked to the car and we finished the loop. Once we turned off of the trail there was a tiny spot with a little incline so they decided this was not for them. Once on the trail the views are gone but you are also in the shade and not on a road anymore. Very easy too follow and we really picked up our pace here. We met back at the car with my parents at about the same time!

Took a relatively easy hike for 3 miles each way. Fantastic scenery. Make sure to stay hydrated. The next day we drove the Pass to Como and then took the highway around and back to Breckenridge. The road in the pass is packed gravel and some places are a little treacherous so obey speed limits. Scenery is amazing and breathtaking!! The hike with stops took us about two hours. The drive from Breckenridge and all the way back was about 2 1/2 hours.

Don't regrest, but would not do it again. Gravel road and views weren't amazing. Enjoyed the Pacific north west more.

Beautiful route through mountains and into an enormous rural valley on the way to Fairplay, CO. Even though it was snowing on the way over the pass, if you meet CO traction laws, you should have nothing to worry about. We had never taken this route into Breck, but really enjoyed it. Only probably added 20-30 min to the drive from west part of Denver.

Hike, bike or drive. Be careful and keep the speed down, it is single lane in many places, plus there are tons of bike riders, hikers, motor bikes and animals. In the fall the Aspens turn, it is exquisite. Its also busy, with tons of photographers to add to the mix. There are tons of good hiking trails off Boreas Pass

Boreas Pass Road intersects Main Street just a couple of minutes outside of town. A two-lane hard surface road changes into a hard dirt in places and sometimes narrows to a single lane.
The views are remarkable, but the driver needs to keep their eye on the road as there are few barriers even where drop-offs can be quite dramatic. However, there are also many scenic turnouts for photos. We were on the road late afternoon, but I would recommend early to mid-morning. Your best views are of the mountains to the west, and the best light would be on them before noon.
The road climaxes at the summit which marks the Continental Divide and provides information about the narrow-gauge railroad that use to run through the pass. We turned around at the summit and returned to Breckenridge, but the road does continue to Como, offering the opportunity to loop back to Breckenridge via Road 9.

Drove up the Boreas Pass Road during our visit to Breckenridge and really enjoyed the drive as we were not in a rush and we were able to enjoy it. You do need to be careful of vehicles sharing the road and also there are a few spots where you will need extra care due to some rough road conditions but you do not need four wheel drive. At the top there are several buildings and a railroad car to photograph and explore and the view is fantastic.

We took 285 and Boreas Pass from Denver to Breckenridge. It was a beautiful drive and had gorgeous views throughout the entire drive. We were the only car on the road for a lot of it, so we felt comfortable driving at our own pace and not worrying about the steep and fast paced alternate I-70. It is a bit longer of a drive, but is completely worth it. Nothing like this drive up to the mountains!

This pretty drive gives you an opportunity to view the 10 mile range from up high. At the top of the pass you come to an old railroad station and the continental divide. Make this a round trip excursion leave from Breckenridge and travel through Fairplay back to Breckenridge. Lovely drive

My wife and I drove the Boreas Pass Road. I saw a speed limit sign of 10 MPH at the start of the road and didn’t believe it. I should have believed it!
I was following some bicyclists up the road and didn’t want to go fast enough to do it. There were times we didn’t make it to 10.
It is a bumpy rock strewn road with lots of potholes. It is narrow, one lane at times, and we encountered quite a few tentative drivers.
When we got done, we had a sense of accomplishment and a need to get a car wash.

A magnificent drive with stunning views. My advice is to take it slowly to thoroughly enjoy the different aspects of this drive. And beware of vehicles from the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Centre, they do not stick to the speed limit (a law unto themselves) and made the dust in their wake very uncomfortable for other travelers. Apart from that a great day.

We enjoyed our drive to Boreas Pass, Breath taking views can be enjoyed on the way. its at 11000+ feet height, you can see Colorado Rail extincts here

We were looking to see more fall colors and we are glad to visit this place. We drove pass Kenosha pass and it was packed. There were good enough people that stopped and took pictures. It was a dirt road and you have to drive slow and enjoy rhe views. The only sad part is, there are always rude people to drive fast and leave you all the dust in your car. If youhave kids, bring nice snacks because it was like 2 +hrs one way from around Denver.

Well worth the side trip for views, and the Aspens in Fall. Hiking trail is great, not too hard. Road is narrow and exciting when you meet someone and you are on the outside lane. Gets the adrenaline pumping. Go in the Fall.

Easily drivable with a regular passenger car, this Mountain Pass Drive is well worth doing. Phenomenal views, beautiful aspens, and scenery that is hard to find in the low lands. Though most of it is on a dirt road, the road is well cared for in easily navigable. Don’t miss the sights!

worth the drive and beautiful. be sure to stop along the way. close to town and no need for 4wd. can stop along the way and have a couple hours of views that are great.

Went for a drive up the pass to see some Aspen groves changing color.
Met some locals that told us this was a good spot to go for this and beautiful views of the valley below.
They where right, as it was really nice, a pretty easy dirt road for most cars and trucks.

Great spot for perfect sunset overlook. The gravel road is very drivable for the average car, great exercise bike ride or beginner bike ride. Hiking the road can be a bit dusty with cars on the road. There are plenty of trails thru the forest where you can enjoy nature. You just don't have the views of the mountains.

My wife and I along with another couple, took this scenic drive while returning to a cabin we were staying at after a day in Breckenridge. I would encourage those taking the drive to not be in a hurry, stop to take in the unbelievable views, and read some of the interesting information provided about the old railway which is included at the highest point. It was interesting to read about the history.
While the views are unbelievable and we had an amazing time, those considering this should be aware of a few things. As many other reviews noted, the road is not paved and in many instances is very bumpy. I would not recommend this drive unless you have a truck or SUV. The 20 or so miles took well over an hour of driving and at times we were only able to move at about 10 mph. This crosses the continental divide at over 11,000 feet which could make physical activity such as hikes a bit more challenging.

This scenic drive is a must if you are in the Breckenridge area. A gravel road with amazing views and the fall colors were spectacular.

Nearly anywhere in Breckenridge, you can see the mountains. Up on this dirt road, there really wasn't any better view than down below. Earlier on this vacation, I have driven Pikes Peak and Old Fall River Road in Estes Park. By comparison, Boreas Pass Road was quite disappointing.

We had a rental car with just front-wheel drive. This road (during snowfall) requires a 4-wheel drive. We failed to make it up the pass TWICE during our stay...ended up parking our car and renting an Uber.

We decided to hike Black Powder Pass so drove the nine miles up the partially dirt/gravel road to get there. Though you don't need a four wheel drive, be aware that the drive is not a walk in the park. Some parts of extremely narrow and when two cars pass, one has to stop to let the other one by. This being said, the views from here are just incredible! Be adventuresome!

It's steep, but some actually bike it, hike it. To drive, in winter, you need chains or snow tires. Don't be stupid, I've seen cars slide off the road.

The views are awesome. This is an easy car hike for anyone not wanting to walk a lot. The wildflowers this summer were in full bloom.

This road is a little rough and narrow at times but there are many opportunities for amazing views, especially at the top. Always an enjoyable experience.

Road was closed due to snow, but we walked about 1 mile up the road to see beautiful views of Breckinridge. Parked at a trail head but you need snowshoes to walk the trail

We are used to going up Trailridge in Estes Park so the drive to Boreas Pass was scenic but just okay.

Several people told us to drive this pass and it was breathtaking! We were not disappointed. The road is a bit narrow in areas but no one is in a hurry driving it so it was ok driving it.

This trip is not for the faint of heart. There are some parts where you will be teetering on the edge trying to squeak by while another car is going down the mountain. Once you get past the nail biting parts get ready for some beauty. I went here mid-late fall so there was some part where there was a lot of beautiful foliage and other parts where the leaves had already fallen. It truly is a beautiful pass. There are some pretty rough spots so it’s probably best if you have an SUV, truck or a car that’s not lowered. In good weather most cars can make it up but I’d reckon in any other type of weather definitely go with AWD or 4 wheel drive.

We just happened to find our way up to the pass and we were glad we did! Some of the best views and a fun day exploring and hiking!

The boreas pass road is a narrow dirt road that any vehicle can take (summer) with great mountain and nature views. The drive itself feels very safe compared to other similar mountain pass roads. The road is bumpy in parts but well maintained. Only when you encounter another car does it feel a little unsafe as you have to move to the edge. The pass has a few lookouts and stop offs to hike or take pictures. We went back at dusk and saw a moose as well as a great spot to see the Milky Way and stars.
The path has several remnants of the old railroad that ran here in the late 1880s.
The drive to the top, with the old buildings takes about 40 minutes if you take your time. The road continues to Como but unless you need to go that way it’s not worth driving too. There aren’t any good views that way and the road is covered in larger rocks. So turn around at the top.

We did not intend nor plan to do this drive when we were in Breckenridge but a couple of locals told us about it. The views are AMAZING and getting to see the continental divide is not something to pass up! Trust me, just take the drive as it is well worth it! Note: closed in snow

Decided to take a scenic drive today and discovered the beauty and scenic vistas that Boreas Pass has to offer. Had a rental car so only drove up to the divide before driving back out. Along the way we stopped in numerous places to not only take pictures but to just enjoy the views. Road was graded and easily navigated at a slow speed. My husband and I both enjoyed this 2 hour round trip experience.

A basic mountain road, but beautiful in September! The aspens are plentiful and beautiful along Boreas Pass Road!

Go in the Fall... yes, you'll be there with about a million other people but the views are fantastic and the journey is exciting! Depending on which way you go you'll either end up in Como (a cute little town - don't blink or you'll miss it) or Breckenridge (the cutest little ski town)!

While visiting Breckenridge we decided to take the drive across the Boreas Pass Road. This starts as a paved road, but quickly turns to gravel. There are some beautiful views from this road, but the dust, dirt, gravel, rocks, and wash boarding make traveling on it a very low speed adventure. Some areas are quite rough, with large rocks sticking up in the road. It is very interesting to know that you are actually driving on the train track bed from the 1880’s, and the recreated buildings and historical information at the summit are a very interesting touch, but give yourself plenty of time to get there. For me, there are an abundance of spectacular summits that can be reached from nice paved roads in the vicinity of Breckenridge, so I would recommend picking some of the others over this one.

While not for the faint hearted, this drive provides spectacular views and feels like you've been transported to your own ideal world. The road is narrow at times and often very rough, so the 10 MPH speed limit isn't just a suggestion--it's mandatory and easy to follow. About halfway you come to the Continental Divide where the road becomes smoother and wider. The hour it takes to drive nonstop (more if you stop for pictures and to take in the views) is followed by a 40 minute drive back to Breck via Hwy 285 and Hwy 9.

This is a winter-use review. This road is blocked off in the winter. There is ample parking at the gate and from there you have a gentle slope for 6 miles to the pass (where the Section House is). For the first 1.5 miles you have wonderful views of Breck and the mountains beyond. If there is no new snow, micro-spikes are usually fine.

The Boreas pass road is great for a day trip from Breckenridge. It is a dirt road, but is suitable for any type of car - no need for a 4-wheel drive. It is also a great place for a bike ride. There is a museum half-way through the pass - quite interesting. It is also the starting point for a few good hikes, including the hike to the Bald Mountain Summit.

Want an amazing picture of stunning mountain vistas? Then look no further than Boreas Pass Road and the many points to pull over and take pictures of this winter wonderland!

Great ride for a picture perfect adventure. Many pull offs to stop and take pictures of the valley below. Well worth the ride.

We didn't make it to the top because it got dark and I was driving a larger SUV without 4WD and with the narrow roads, I was worried about seeing well in the dark, but what we did see was amazing!! This is a must do when you visit Breck!!

Every time we are in the area we take this drive. The views are stunning and seeing wildlife just makes it that much better. You can make the pass with a standard car. Stop and see some of the sights as well.

Saw way better views in other locations. Views are obscured by trees. Not really much up this way. Not worth the drive up in my opinion.

We took a day and drove up the pass from Breck. It was a nice scenic ride. The rode gets a little iffy and narrow along the way, not even enough room for 2 cars around some of the curves. Some of the road is just rock and closed during certain times of the year. The views from the top are breathtaking - definitely recommend

I rode the Boreas Pass from Breck to Como and back on a mountain bike I rented in Breck. The terrain is good and the climb (it's all a climb) is not steep but it is long and requires a pretty high level of endurance fitness.
I rode it in September when the leaves were turning and the higher elevation required arm warmers and a vest. There were several others mountain biking the pass that day. The road is wide enough for cars to safely pass.
I rated this as Excellent because it's a good dirt road for mountain biking or gravel riding and it difficult enough to feel an accomplishment when finished.

Hiking was great! We did the easiest path around the lake several times! The weather in Oct. was great. Alot of the attractions were closed but hiking and walking downtown was just fine.

What a spectacular drive - plenty of hiking opportunities and the views - you can't beat them. The road is narrow but manageable and only a few sections are rough. We missed the peak of color but there was plenty to still see. One of the better trips we've taken in the Rockies this vacation.

I have ridden this road twice on my Suzuki V-Strom - it really is an EPIC experience! The views are spectacular, and the road is fun. You could easily drive this in small SUV's, and even some cars if they have decent ground clearance. Highly recommended!

We read all the reviews about the road being good to drive on. Well, there are major parts of it that are washboard, or full of rocks that make driving slow and hard. From our perspective, it wasn't worth the shaking our car took, we have a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek and felt it was too jolting. We missed the peak aspens, that would be beautiful, however the part from Breckenridge to the pass would be our better choice if we ever did the drive again. After the pass down to Como, very rocky. It's also narrow in spots and you have to slow down or find a rare spot to pull over, people drive fast on this road.

We decided to take this drive to see the fall colors. The road turns to gravel shortly after getting past housing. Its gets really rough in some spots, not sure I would take a car or van unless you have high clearance. We only went to the spot where the cabins and train cars were then turned around and got out to hike around on the way back. Lots of cool history to learn about

Although it is a County Road & connects Breckenridge to the little town of Como ... it is unpaved but maintaned. This little road is well used by both vehicles, bicyclers, hikers and nature and history enthusiests. There are many hiking trails along this beautiful stretch of road plus it is a perfect place to take the family for a glimpse of Colorado history. There is the old town at the top of the pass with railroad track and old train still there. Go explore the little back country cabins still used by back country skiers (by permit) ... and read up on the rouged people who suffered many hardships taming our wild west. Last year on a rainy day around this same time period, I took pictures of an elk munching on vegetation just a few feet off the road. Don't forget to pack a lunch and a blanket and take in the beautiful cool mountain air and remember 99% of the country is melting this time of year! Get out and do it!!!

This unpaved road meanders across the mountains allowing for many stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. There are several great places to stop to hand hike and can easily be made into entertainment for a full day.

This is a great drive over to Breckenridge from Como. Very Scenic! A hidden gem if you have an SUV or Jeep. Probably could pass over with a sedan but not ideal.

Went to Boreas Pass and the views are beautiful but BEWARE the road is really scary and bumpy with lots of pot holes. It was also icy in spots when we were there last week. The worst part is when you have to pass another car on a very narrow road which really fits 1 car not 2. There is a straight drop off with no guard rails. I found it terrifying and ended up doing a 3 point turn to turn around and get out of there. It was so stressful. The views are great but I would only do it again if I hiked it

Bluebird Spring day in Breckenridge, chose to do something other than ski. The drive up Boreas Pass Rd has several sections to pull over and admire the view of Ten Mile Range, particularly of the Breckenridge Ski resort. Once you get to the small parking area at the end of the road you can access a couple trails. The path along the mountainside is well used by cross country skiers, so it is well worn and snowshoes are not necessary.
At the start of the tour you immediately have spectacular views of the Blue River Valley and the majestic Ten mile Range. The path follows the old South Park and Pacific Railroad bed, climbing on a gradual 3% grade.
It was quiet and peaceful, and if there were others around I did not notice. I'm looking forward to coming back in summer, or Autumn when the groves of aspen trees surrounding the path are dressed in gold.

We drive up to the mountains every year to see the fall colors. We've been over many different passes over the years. This is by far our favorite pass so far! The aspens were gorgeous and there was just so much too look at.

We visit the pass every year. You can go all the way across but you can also go up and hike and then turn around to come back to Breckenridge. There is a cool spot to look at some old buildings and read some history. The view is spectacular. We have not yet conquered all the trails up there but it is on the bucket list. Go up there it is great

We drove through Boreas Pass Road to the top and turned around and drove back down to Breckinridge. It was a beautiful drive with wildlife sightings! Worth the time.

Easy drive through the mountains. Summertime you will see various flora and fauna. Mosquitos can be bad in the summer if there is no wind, so prepared accordingly.

We experienced Boreas Pass in 2 different ways. One day on a bike and the next day by car. Day 1 - Rented mountain bikes and drove(by car) up to the portion of Boreas Pass road just before it becomes a dirt road. We hoped onto our bikes and rode about 6 miles uphill to the pass and the continental divide. The slope was gentle and with a few breaks we were there. The views are great along the way and at the top. After a short visit we coasted back down enjoying the ride. Day 2 - Friends arrived and we decided to share the views with them. This time we drove our SUV and parked at the continental divide. At the top we picked up a hiking trail that starts behind the rail road car to a peak that was about 12,000 feet. The views were spectacular. Highly recommend making the trip.

We drove this road from Breckenridge at 9900 feet elevation to 11,350 feet elevation near the top of the pass. The road twists its way up the mountain, offering breathtaking views and a challenging drive. After the first 2 miles, the pavement ends and the road narrows. It's a fun and scenic drive.

We started up the pass road in the morning around 10AM. It was a nice clear day. The road goes from paved to easy gravel to rough gravel, beware if you have a car that sits low to the ground. There are some great trails off this road and more than a few photography spots.
You can drive entirely through the pass into Como on the other side and make your way back around to Breckenridge through Fairplay.

We drove what seemed like a fairly long way on gravel. It was pretty but just not our thing. Been there...done that

We had the chance to see the pass in full fall colors last week. The road is a bit tight in spots and caution is required. Not really sure you need a big suv a mid sized vehicle might be a better choice. It is a dirt road and bumpy, but manageable. The panoramic views with the Aspen tree in bloom were a special sight.

While not the most comfortable road to drive, the path to Bakers Tank as well as the Boreas pass summit area are definitely worth the drive. Takes about 30 minutes once you leave the Boreas "paved road" to reach the Summit. Not too rocky until you get close to the Summit but a high clearance vehicle is definitely preferable (you don't really need 4 wheel drive though). One cause, the closer you get to the Summit, you may meet cars coming the other way and you must pull over to let them pass. Be mindful of the drop offs - not a lot of guard rails and it's a LONG ways down in some areas. Don't let this dissuade you - the end is definitely worth it.
For more adventurous types, once you reach the summit you can continue on the road all the way to Como (another old mining/rail town) and then come back on the more comfortable US 285 and Co 9 highways!

This is a beautiful drive especially during the fall foliage but it can be a rather scary drive. The fall colors were beautiful and the drive is worth doing at least once, but the passengers in my car did not want to do it on the way back. I consider myself a confident driver but this trip can be challenging. Much of it is dirt road, some with rocky bumps and ditches. It is not a a comfortable ride even with a four wheel drive. In doing this drive, it'll be good to have a car capable of handling this terrain and also something not too wide. There were numerous single lane spots where it'll be impossible for two cars to pass. Beautiful drive, but take it slow and please but safe out there!

We did a quick trip to the pass today to check it out and it was amazing. We weren’t dressed for a lot of hiking, but trail conditions and beautiful weather allowed us to get a good hour walk in. And what a walk it is. The vistas are worth it.

We have a second home in Breckenridge, so have been on Boreas Pass in all the different seasons. The road is maintained from late spring until the end of October. Beautiful views of Goose Pasture Tarn in every season. Wildflowers in the spring & summer. Incredible Aspen change of color in the fall.
After the road is closed at the end of October, great place to snow shoe or even hike (when the snow is packed). This road was originally the narrow gauge railroad from South Park to Breckenridge. You can see railroad station relics and buildings all along the road.

Spent the afternoon going through Boreas Pass Road. This drive offers amazing views and plenty of places to pull over to soak it all in. The road is mostly dirt, but well maintained and does not require a 4 wheel drive. Excellent way to take in the beautiful views if you are not a hiker!

Even though our hike was interrupted by a monsoon shower, the trail was lined by wildflowers even though we were a little late for the peak bloom. It was hard to believe that folks actually lived here year around to maintain the railraod.

It was quite an thrill to follow the old railroad over the pass and experience the sights and some of the feel of what the engineers may have felt. There is a section where you can still see the rails and how close they originally were to the edge of forever. For the complaints I have read here for the quality of the road, I disagree. This is not a scenic highway, it is a state road that has relatively little traffic and difficult at best maintenance. I will agree that there are tose who have little regard for others on the road and should slow the pace no matter what they are driving. All in all a fun experience. Might want to start, or finish depending on the direction of travel, at the railroad museum in Breckenridge to see the narrow gauge locomotive and some of the cars that traveled this route.

Boreas Pass road is a dirt road and is narrow at points and its an average of 10 miles per hour to drive up it, so it does take a good hour to go a few miles. Navigating in the dark is not the easiest and you should have an SUV. It is a little scary at points when the road narrows, but is in overall good condition. When you reach the top there is a small dirt parking lot above the tree line and you have a spectacular view of the stars. You do need to check for when the moon sets too, so be sure to check that to plan the perfect time to star gaze. The meteor shower was amazing to watch and you could see fireballs and shooting stars every few minutes. It is a great little trip from Breckenridge.

Go to the end of Main St in Breckenridge and turn left. This is an unpaved road which is narrow in some places and no guardrails but it is not dangerous. You do not need four wheel drive. Plenty of places to stop for pictures or hikes. There are no facilities between the start and Boreas Pass (Continental Divide). We just went to the Pass and returned to Breckenridge. Some people recommend continuing to Como and then return to Breckenridge by the highway. It is a beautiful drive.

Absolutely beautiful views!great drive along gravel road to continental divide. Go on a clear night for beautiful skies.

In the summer you can make this drive and you don't have to have a 4 wheeler. It was a bit jarring in a Ford Mustang convertible but we made it. It is worth the drive but be careful of all the bikers and campers along the rood. If you have a car this is a great morning or afternoon trip from Breckenridge in the summer

It's a road with attitude. It's beautiful in summer and fall with mountain views and leaf peeping. In Winter, it can be an ice slick. There are locals and tourists living close to this road. Mountain bikers sometime zip down it in summer. There are great hiking/biking trails that are skinning trails in winter to Baldy.

This is a favorite off road pass. Easy enough for a novice driver and any 4 wheel drive vehicle. Great views of the mountains and perfect for an afternoon adventure.

Wowza. So glad we drove a portion of this road after our hike. You get fantastic views. Road is hard packed gravel but easy to drive although not very wide. Drive slow around the curves with on coming cars. Must do if in the area. I bet it is beautiful in fall with all the aspen tress turning colors. Highly recommend!!!!!

We started in Como (road #404) and drove towards Breckenridge. Lovely drive with lots of stops for kids to stretch their legs.

Summit county roads did a horrible job on the pass over the last 18 years. spent a lot of time in Breck.....did the Pass road in the 90's on my road bike. decent shape back then no horrible drop off's and rutted roads. now it is horrible. last fall did it in 4wd.....no way would a road bike do this without a lot of on and off the bike. what do you do with the tax money from all the cheap stuff that is sold in Breck and the outlet stores?? sure is not spent on Boreas pass any more!!!!

Went from breckenridge and drove to place where railroad car was and some buildings. But they were closed. The rough roads and occasional scene wasn't enough to get us to go the rest of the way. Maybe prettier in the fall by the pictures or we didn't get to the good stuff. It was ok.

Small paved road leading to longer dirt road outside of town that provides fantastic views of town and the mountains.

This is one of the many roads in the Breckenridge area that are truly outstanding ! If possible make the trip in late September of early October and catch the beautiful fall colors, especially the Aspens.

I cannot explain how amazing the views are here! We were in our jeep and drive some of the offshoots too. It was bumpy but so cool. Apparently many people camp off of the road. It is pretty remote out there.

It is worth the drive anytime. Summer, it's beautiful and cool. Fall the aspens are changing. Spring, Flowers-Flowers-flowers

Aspen trees were in full Fall display. The road is a little bit narrow in a couple of places and there are rocks sticking out/potholes here and there. All the more reason to slow down and enjoy. We visit Breck often and enjoyed having a different way to get there via South Park. Amazing that they built a railroad all the way up there!

The drive along Boreas to the pass is dirt and bumpy. You don't have to use 4WD, but it's more enjoyable. Please don't speed, as its curvy and very narrow...I've almost been hit head on a few times by idiot drivers! Once at the top, park and hike up to the Black Powder Pass...great scenic hike, especially during wildflower season.

If you're driving from South Park to Breckenridge or vice versa, and the pass is open, take Boreas. It costs you only a few minutes (plus any stops), and the views are amazing. This is one of my favorite fall foliage drives in central Colorado.

we love, love, love this road. i have seen mini vans on it, but it does have some big holes, no real steep stuff, though. we have done this road in the fall, summer, and spring. it is always beautiful. at the pass, at the top, is the historic railroad round. and you can follow the numbered signs to all the historic signs along the way. don't forget the cemetery at the bottom on the como side. it is so beautiful there with the old headstones and huge aspens.

My husband and I used to take this path up to the top on bikes every year for about 10 years. We've not done it recently as we've not kept up with our biking lately. Still, this was on our "to-do" list for to do at least once a season for many years. It's a bit challenging to pedal up to the top, but worth the effort. The downhill ride is the reward!
The views up and down are really beautiful, some sections riding through the Aspens that line the road, are particularly nice once the colors start changing. For recreational bikers, this is a very nice challenge without all the difficulty of switch backs and steepness. It's a couple of hours up and back. Parking at the trail head, never a problem, even on the weekends at the height of summer. A very good, scenic workout! I would highly recommend.

We hit pass from Breckinridge side at 8:00 am, hoping to avoid a lot of traffic and crazy 4 wheel vehicles. Gloriously quiet trip up, minimal traffic, lots of campers til about 3/4 way up. Some serious narrow turns, had to back up to let a larger truck thru one. Very rough washed roads in some sections, going slow will save alignment and tires. So glad we took the drive. Went out Como side and landed at Train Festival Day today. Much fun, highly recommend.

Our condo was located up off Boreas Pass Road so we drove it daily. There are a lot of switch backs going up the mountain. However, there are pull offs where you can take photos of the views. The road condition is fairly well maintained and where there were issues they put signs out.

Wow- wow- wow!! With 4wd we were able to get into a few beautiful areas of the pass even in a snow storm. Great views & places to pull off to take photos.

This is a one lane, dirt road that heads up to the mountains. It used to be a railroad many years ago. Pretty neat history along the way with a cool, old train tanker (Bakers Tank) you can visit. Seemed to be quite a few trails off the road, but we didn't try any hiking this time. We went up to the top (Continental Divide) which sits almost 11.500 feet. Very neat old cabins up there that belonged to the railroaders of long ago. Beautiful scenery along the way. We didn't go over to Como so not sure what was on the other side of the drive. Be prepared for some tight squeezes when other cars come along and pretty rough road in spots. Worth it though!

Great route if you have the time. The entire length is a bumpy dirt road that any vehicle can handle. Plenty of pullouts along the way and ample opportunities for pictures. Some of the turns are narrow but if you’re watching your speed and the road they’re easily negotiated.

This was absolutely worth the drive. Some areas are tight, so go slow and be watching for other vehicles but the road is well-kept and we didn't have any problems with a Honda Acord.

Boreas Pass is very interesting to travel. Great views heading up to our home away from home. Scenic views of the mountains and Breckenridge

The colors were absolutely beautiful when we took this drive. Recommend you take the drive all the way to Como. We thought the most spectacular views were on way down after going over Boreas pass. Took Highways 285 and 9 back to Breckenridge and the views on both routes were spectacular. A must see.

Worth the trip! Outstanding views in all directions, especially on a clear day. It is worth the time and effort.

The full loop is about three hours. There are some gorgeous views. There are places where the road is very rough and bumpy. It snowed which made nice pictures for us at the pass. We saw some elk crossing the road and heading down the mountain.

Did the hike based on staff recommendation, both the actual hike-lots of snow-and later the road to continental divide which was closed to cars.

Beautiful country. You are able to get the feeling of being out in the wilderness. We were lucky to go on a Tuesday afternoon so there were few other vehicles on the pass. While many folks turn around at the summit we elect to drive down the other side and are glad we did. You end up with a few more spectacular views and end up in ranch country.

We have driven this two-way dirt road several times in the past 40 years and always enjoy this scenic route. It can be rocky in places, but it is passable in just about any vehicle. At several points along the way the view opens up to valleys or other mountain ranges, one of which is the Tenmile Range. Most of the way is forested, and fall brings its Colorado Gold with the changing of the aspen leaves. At the top of the pass are several restored buildings that were used during the time that the railroad, famed as the highest narrow-gauge railroad in the country, crossed the Divide between Como and Breckenridge. There is also a Colorado and Southern boxcar at the pass, and hiking trails go off in various directions from the main road. While the road is closed to traffic during the winter months, a couple of the buildings are available for rent as winter ski huts.

We drove up every day for a week to get to our condo (Gold Point Resort) Hell of a ride, but the road is wide enough and in fine condition so that a driver need not be wary.

This road offers some of the best vistas Colorado has to offer. From the South, it starts at the expanse of South Park. It rises through stream dappled valleys, aspen stands, dense pine forests and cliff top views. Above treeline, the panoramic views are breathtaking.
The top of the pass is over 11,000 feet and has signs describing how the railcars and buildings played a role in the area's history.
There is road side camping and numerous trails to peaks. Dropping into Summit County, the valley opens up and reveals the ski trails at the Breckenridge ski resort and the town of Breckenridge.
The drive is rewarding during the handful of months it is open.

It doesn't matter if you snowshoe in the winter or hike this trail in the summer....it is one to do. t is an easy hike with absolutely beautiful views. Make sure you have a camera with you!

I have done this pass twice. In good weather, it is beautiful. The railroad artifacts at the top are very interesting as well.

Gotta be honest...this is a VERY rough, rocky and narrow road. Absolutely not suitable for regular street vehicles and tires. Our all weather tires got very chewed up going over this road. There was much traffic and in some places only one vehicle wide with no guardrail and sheer dropoffs. Not for the feint of heart.
On the flip side, the views are spectacular.
Just cautioning future visitors to be prepared. I would recommend a 4x4 with off road tires and higher ground clearance.

Drove the Boreas Pass Road in July - unfortunately amidst the Breck 100 Mountain Bike race. We felt bad about being in the way of the cyclists, but they did not seem to mind. Views are great, but the driver cannot risk taking his/her eyes off the road - so stop at pullouts for photos. Road is rougher at the top than described, but not dangerous. Would not enjoy the ride in a sedan or smallish vehicle - SUV/pick-up is advisable.

We took Boreas Pass into Breckenridge this weekend and we were not disappointed. It's a beautiful drive with gorgeous scenery all along the way. There are a couple of narrow spots that made me nervous when passing other cars, but there weren't that many people on the road while we were driving it. This would be a gorgeous drive in the fall, when the leaves change. We plan on coming back in a week or 2 to hopefully see the beautiful fall colors. The road is rocky - some spots are worse than others, but I think that most passenger cars could handle it, if they have enough clearance.

I came up from Denver to just get away from stress, and decided to take this drive...it was definitely well worth it. The trees were starting to turn colors, and there was hardly another soul in site! Beautiful drive! (It is a dirt road, with occasional potholes and rocks, FYI)

great drive connecting (probably with some angst) CO 9 to US 285. starting out in Breckenridge, there's a mine off a side street w/ mining history, a trailhead for hiking at end of paved part, and dramatic angst-filled vistas beyond end of paved part.

There is a very good reason that this road is a top activity in the Breckenridge area, it is incredible. The north side is not for the faint of heart. The road is very narrow and has many blind corners. Just take your time and keep your eyes on the road. Plus, going slow allows you to take a peek now and then. We went during the fall change of colors when it was even more impressive.

Really amazing views as you drive up to the pass from Breckenridge. Possible the worst condition road I've been on for a scenic drive with some very rocky terrain at certain points that had be praying I wouldn't puncture a tire. Overall though a worthwhile journey if your vehicle and your nerves can handle it.

I took my young girls up this road and at first they were frightened but not for too long. We stopped to look over the town of Breck and it was a great view. Also the views of the ski slopes was awesome. Great photos. We also drove Illinois Gulch and Mt Baldy road.

I have traveled this road several times and each time, the views never cease to amaze. Good pull-off's for photo ops of the Blue River Valley and 10-mile Range. The 16 mile trip to the top is all dirt with some narrow passages. Drive under canopies of Aspen Trees.

Wonderful drive up a dirt road. Make sure to stay on your side of the road, There are people camping up in the National Forest so be respectful.

Boreas Pass Road is easy to get to, just outside of downtown Breckenridge. The first part is paved/residential, the upper road is dirt and a bit narrow in a couple of spots, but certainly passable; just slow down as needed. At the top there is lots of parking, and some plaques explaining the railroad history and significance of the buildings that are left. You can take a short, moderate hike to Black Powder Pass or a bit further to overlook French Gulch (a bit more than 3 miles round trip, max 12500' elevation). Great views of nearby Boreas, Baldy and Guyot peaks, and of the Ten-Mile Range in the distance. Return to Breck the way you came, or even better, go over the pass and come out in tiny historic Como. You can then loop around through Fairplay, Hoosier Pass, and back to Breck to complete the day. We took friends who had never been before, and this was a decent hike to help them acclimatize.

This is a awesome road to drive for any standard car as 4 wheeled drive is not required. The road is an old rail bed and takes long slow incline up over the pass and it is really beautiful for Aspen viewing. Give yourself a good 1-2 hours for a casual leaf peeping cruise. At the pass you will find an old water tank, rail cars and some old buildings all worth walking around.

This offers the best views for least effort. Great for snowshoeing or x-country skiing, or (a day or so after trail has been broken) for walking. In summer, drive over to Como, and make the round trip back to Breckenridge, stopping in Fair Play for the outdoor 19th century town museum—an assembly of buildings from the old west.

The Boreas Pass road is the other way to get to Breck, you come in from the south. It has a place to park at the top. There is snow shoeing in the winter and hiking in the summer. It is a beautiful drive that is more laid back than I-70.

Aspen colors and overall scenery was great given it was peak color. But the dirt road is full of holes, jagged rocks, and washboard ruts. I'm amazed I didn't blow a tire. Driving 5 mph was common.
Recommend a large SUV or heavy duty truck that can handle the terrain more easily.

Yes the path is gravel and it is rough in some spots, but even a Buick LaCrosse can make the trip
The scenery was gorgeous and it was a nice trip to take a rest from multiple days of hiking.
We got to the top and the hiked up the trail behind the rail car to the top. It took about 45 minutes for us to get to the top, take some pictures, and come down again.
Take highway 9 to FairPlay for a nice lunch at the Park Bar on front street.
Overall a nice relaxing day.

We really wanted to take this drive and enjoy the views, however, it was apparently still closed due to snow on 6/23/19. Either that, or it was recently closed because of new snow on the first three days of summer.

Amazing! Make sure your car is up for the challenge. We took the drive from Breckenridge in our AWD Subaru and I'm very thankful we had the SUV. This is not a paved road and it can be pretty narrow. That being said it is beautiful. We took it all the way to highway 285 and then back to Denver.

The Boreas Pass Rd. starts just at the end of Main Street in Breck. Easy to find. Took the drive nice and slow, as you really can't go fast. As everyone mentions, the road is very narrow and made of gravel. Wasn't a hard drive, but not for those that are Nervous Nellie's when it comes to driving. Scenery was amazing with lots of little pullovers so you can get out and look. We randomly pulled off at one and heard water running. We walked a few feet into the woods and were rewarded with the most beautiful waterfall and stream. We also stopped at the top of a beautiful meadow and way down at the tree line, we saw a couple of deer walking into the woods. We went all the way over the top and then down toward Como. There is nothing there and the drive back to Breck was a bit lengthy. If I went again, I would turn around at the top and go back down to Breck.

If you never have played in Snow or want to play in snow in July, GO to Boreas Pass.
Air is thin, so conserve your strength if you are elder or have breathing challenges

It was such an easy and beautiful drive. It was our first day in Colorado and it was awesome! Some drives can be scary, this one was not. We had a large suv with 6 people. It is such a perfect taste about what Colorado has to offer and an easy thing to do when your lungs are still acclimating to the thinner air in Breckenridge.

I-70 was experiencing heavy traffic and road construction delays so we decided to take an alternate route back to Denver for Breckenridge. A beautifully lazy drive! The drivegoes through heavily forrested areas to aspen groves to alpine tundra. Spectacular views and beautiful mountain flowers. Drive carefully over the rocky road and some narrow areas. Plenty of pull off areas to get out and take pictures or hike. Old railroad trail which crosses the continental divide. Great roads back to Denver.

This is a REALLY fun day trip albeit a bit harrowing at times as the unpaved, dirt road gets rocky at the top and discomforting in spots where the road narrows too much for 2 cars to pass simultaneously. Go slow and enjoy the views. We stopped at least 4 times to take pictures and to hike a few trails. The trails are endless and the scenery/views are stunning!! Don't be too distracted by the drive up. Get to the top. It's worth it if you enjoy scenic views...

I am an avid road cyclist who recently purchased a new gravel bike. I had been super busy back home so literally had not test the bike on any gravel surface. The boys at a local bike shop recommended I try out Boreas Pass Road to break me in. What a wonderful ride! I started in town, Breckenridge, and road up to the start of the gravel road. Now I don't know much since I don't normally do this kind of thing, but I imagine I have been ruined. The road surface goes through many changes, so I got a good helping of many types of "gravel". I think a mountain bike would be more ideal for this road, but my Specialized Crux handled all of it beautifully. The views are spectacular. From sweeping mountain snow capped vistas, to the overlook to a lake below. The road grinds through a few different rock sections where the road snakes through tiny man made canyons. I fell short of the summit due to weather conditions. I can see why this would be a fall destination with the aspen groves flanking the road in several sections. I honestly forgot how hard the ride had been in spots just because it was so darned beautiful!

Drove from Breckenridge to Como to start the Boreas Pass (so we would end back up at our lodging). The sweeping valleys and mountains were absolutely stunning.
Pretty bumpy drive in our compact car but easily do-able. Took about 1.5 hours from Como to Breckenridge. Absolutely worth the drive.

It's an easy drive in ANY car in the summer. I have done some 4WD roads over passes in CO that became rough on a stock Tacoma. This time I was out in a rental car and had no issues. If you have never driven a gravel road and windy roads with no guardrail scare you, it might not be for you.
Beautiful scenery. Worth taking some time to do. We drove over the pass on our way back to Denver.

We drove most of this road to the top of the mountain and also got out to walk around and enjoy the views. Especially in the fall, I would recommend this to anyone visiting the area.

Decided to take a hike and needed to drive this pass to the trailhead. Wowza. The road is narrow and bumpy. We had a Jeep so we were fine. I did see some smaller cars on the drive though. Worth a drive if you appreciate scenery.

We have a family reunion meeting in Breckenridge, and based on the TripAdvisor reviews, we went to the Boreas Pass Road. What a beautiful place! The drive was about an hour up the mountain. Once you leave the paved road, it is pretty intense on the gravel, so I recommend using a car that sits higher off the road (SUV). Once we got to the top, there is a Continental Divide sign and great hiking. Some of our group went hiking even further up the mountain. Views were so pretty! This is a must-do!

This was a highlight of my recent visit to Colorado! Beautiful scenery and a bit of excitement and adventure driving the dirt road. Please drive slow and respect others on the trail. I saw cars, trucks, hikers, and bikers all on the trail, so stay aware and share the trail responsibly, and you will have a great drive. Now, if you are someone who is afraid to drive (you know who you are), then I suggest asking someone else to drive, or consider driving some of the other many beautiful roads in Colorado such as the Trail Ridge Road.

Boreas Pass Road, found on Google maps as County Rd 10, is easily accessible in the summer with any two-wheel vehicle. Climbing the ridge opposite Breckenridge resort the views are amazing. With many open fields, easy pull-off locations you can take as much time as you wish at a leisurely pace exploring this old railroad pass. Take the road until it ends at county road 801, turn left and continue through the valley floor past gold mines long closed, piles of tailings, through the small town of Como and connect up with highway 285. Turn right onto 285, drive a few miles southwest into Fairplay. At Fairplay turn right onto highway 9 and head back into Breckenridge. Leaving Fairplay keep an eye out on the left side of the highway, roughly three miles outside of town you will see a working gold mine. That is the location of the Hoffman mine featured on Discovery channels Gold Rush TV series.

Probably the one of the most pretty and incredible drives I have made. It is nice to see such an untouched and pristine area. I felt like I was going back in time to the 1800's.

We drove as far as we could and hiked about an hour and a half up the trail. The views were breath taking. We were lucky and saw two moose on our way back. Bring a camera.

Easy 30 minute ride from Breckenridge. If you use google maps, it's an 1.5 hour drive, 15 miles over unpaved roads.

Boreas Pass is a very descent gravel road for those accustomed to mountain driving, though it might take a flat lander by surprise here or there.
The drive is enjoyable and you get many great views.
Definitely stop at the pass and take stroll along the trail toward Black Powder Pass. The first mile is quite easy and you see amazing vistas.

This was a fun scenic drive I took with the family. The sites were just like the pictures that I saw on TripAdvisor.
When we got the top two of my kids and I hiked up a little higher to go and touch some snow in July.
There are no services (bathroom, food, gas) along this route. Be prepared.

A great activity and fantastic colors. Roads was tight, but easily traveled. The vistas were spectacular.

I didn't go quite all the way to the top because the road got a little rough, but there were lots of nice spots along the way to pull over and take pictures.

We got off the main highway and took a dirt road to Boreas Pass. It was worth the detour with amazing views. We had our 4 granddaughters with us and stopped at several places and let them play in the snow. It’s definitely worth the trip.

We drove this pass early morning. It was so beautiful, feeling totally invigorated by the fresh air, the quiet all around us and the beauty of God's world.
The guys also rode their bikes. It was a challenge both ways!!!

Impossible to explain the views. This is a must see and do when traveling to Colorado/Breckenridge. I really took well over 600 photos from my trip and each one tells a story. I will return soon

Coming from Denver, just after Jefferson at Como, take Boreas Pass Road north. It is a gorgeous road (gravel much of the way but well maintained) over the mountains to just outside Breckenridge. It follows the old railway line. There are some old rail cars at the top. The drive is especially beautiful and more traveled in the fall when the leaves are breathtaking. It is well worth the extra time if you are not in a hurry and have the time to take in the beauty of God’s creation. There are hiking trails along the way for those who want to take even more time to explore.

Visited in early May. Out and back thru the Aspen trees on a MTB with cool temps and snow covered peaks. Great experience Outside!

We were so fortunate to be in Breck during the leaf changing in Sept. Boreas Pass was the PERFECT place to view them and see the town from so high up. It was an easy road to take, even in a small rented Ford Fiesta, and I would HIGHLY recommend you not pass up the views! They were phenomenal!

Just finished our boreas pass scenic bike tour with ridden and it was awesome. The tour had it all. A comfortable 15-minute truck ride up the pass then 20 minutes of easy downhill riding towards Como. Then we got picked up and shuttled back to the summit where we had a picnic lunch and time to check out the historic sites. After lunch, we were set loose again on another 6 mile downhill ride back to the trailhead in Breckenridge. We booked the trip through adventurebot which we had never heard of but has all kinds of activities and itinerary planning for Breckenridge and the summit county area.

Lots of trails nearby. There are views of Breckenridge and the surrounding mountains, but views are somewhat limited. The dirt road seemed pretty manageable, even for cars without 4-wheel drive. Moderately trafficked, all things considered (we went on a Saturday afternoon).

We drove this old railroad pass from Breckenridge to Como then drove the highway from Como through Fairplay back to Breckenridge. The history is very interesting and the views were amazing.

The views were absolutely beautiful! Much of the road was dirt and a little scary when you met traffic.

Gorgeous views of the 10 peaks including Breckenridge. A little bit of a scary drive & unpaved road is narrow, so be sure you are confident with your vehicle before attempting. I would only attempt this in the summer months.

I went to Boreas Pass Road and hiked the snow packed trail for about two miles. The views of Breckenridge and the surrounding peaks is magnificent. I was there during the late afternoon and sunset, and will return someday to get photos during sunrise.

My dad and I took this drive on the way south towards Colorado Springs. There are some very nice leaf spotting areas and the overall drive is fairly spectacular.

Boreas Pass road is a amazing road for sight-seeing that begins in Breckenridge and is paved for first first few miles. It is several miles long and starts at the high elevation of 9900 ft and goes up to timberline well above 11,000 ft. The road is not smooth, so expect many bumps. This is one of the top viewing roads for the "changing of the Aspen trees" in Colorado. Although bumpy, it has amazing views of surrounding mountains, old mines, high altitude flora & fauna, and the Breckenridge Ski area. This is a historic Rocky mountain Pass dating back over 100 years. Easily a 2 to 6 hour drive. Please check out a map because this road goes all the way to another historic Colorado town call Como. Enjoy

This historic pass runs between the town of Como (near Fairplay) on US-285 and Breckenridge and was the high-altitude railroad pass that was turned into a road back in the 1930s. It’s all dirt. It is not paved so it is seasonal. However, reviews that state that you need an SUV to do the road might be a bit dated. We happened to be in an SUV but this would be very doable in most any vehicle. The road is in very good shape as of August 20, 2016.
There are some amazing views – and some sections that were pretty white knuckle due to the road getting pretty narrow with steep drops – and no guardrails. But, the views are stunning. At the pass itself, there are a few historic structures and the remains of others that once made up the small village at the top of the pass. Until 1905, this was the site of the country’s highest post office!!
Certainly worth the drive. I’d love to go all the way to Breckenridge. We only drove from Como to the Pass and back to Como…

It’s free, and it has been the highlight of our trip so far. Beauty, beauty, and more beauty! Plan on taking your time. Stop at the lookouts and appreciate God’s creation.

It is a very pretty ride You have to stop at the ice rink to see the Troll. Just a little hike to get to it.

We've often talked about taking the Boreas Pass Road from Breckenridge to Fairplay instead of Hoosier Pass. We finally did yesterday. The fall colors were awesome! We saw a bull, cow, and two moose calves. Well worth the trip!

We went on this drive in mid October. Most of the leaves were off the trees but still had spectacular views to enjoy. Some areas of the road are a bit rocky and we worried about our little rental car but such a great drive.

The road offered great views of Breckenridge with a sawmill exhibit. We were there in June and part of the road was still closed. Worth an hour or so of your time.

The Boreas road is always spectacular in the Fall, but the views and old railroad relics are wonderful to see during the summer months also. There are wonderful mountain biking trails and just biking the road to the pass is also great for families.

This is a nice, easy drive, especially in the fall when the aspens are turning. There are several “ tree tunnels” that allow for awesome photos. The road is narrow in places, so be aware of oncoming traffic, as well as those who stop in the middle of the road.

Our family decided to take this pass based on a few local reviews. We drove out toward Como and drove back toward Breckenridge. The road gets pretty narrow in several places so if that makes you nervous be aware. Some of the views are simply amazing. It did take a few hours and the only thing I would do differently is maybe eat before we left. Once you are on the road, there isn't anywhere to stop for lunch until you get back to Breckenridge. We really enjoyed it and if you love the mountains, do yourself a favor and check it out. We went in the summer.

This was a suggestion from the hotel. This is a very rough and somewhat dangerous road ( in spots). The Ford Fusion rental was not the vehicle to be driving on they dirt road. Views at the top where absolutely beautiful. Top recommended speed is 5 MPH

The road can be a bit intimidating past the paved section but it's worth it and if nothing else, at least drive up the paved section, the scenery is beautiful.

Beautiful drive in rocky, narrow dirt road. The trick is to have a driver you totally trust- which I thankfully do! Prettiest scenery and interesting history of the railroad and history in the area in the 1800's. Gorgeous views- here's a few.

Be sure and take this short drive. You can go all the way to the pass and see the old Railroad town. Or you can stop about half way up at Baker's tank. In the fall, the aspen line the road and the colors are brilliant. The best place to see fall color in the Breck area. Be careful though, it is a gravel road, so take your time, drive slow and enjoy the scenery.

Great scenic road. The fall colors were awesome. This road is a must do for everyone. Not a difficult road.

Beautiful views of the mountains! Drove through the entire pass. Road was passable during July. A part of our history.

Boreas Pass Road is a great way to see the back country near Breckenridge. The road is dirt for 90% of the crossing but is very well maintained. Need to be careful as traffic is two way and the road is one lane in some portions.
The summit is the continental divide and has older historic structures.
Take 3-4 hours and pack lunch and enjoy the many stops along the way.
Beyond Beautiful.

What a great way to spend a few hours. Starts out on asphalt then gravel. Even has places to go 4 wheel drive trails. Beautiful views.
Make time for this!

Nice drive to the top of the pass, where you will find remains of the town that was responsible to keep the tracks clear and train running. The road follows the narrow gauge track that was there. Plenty of hiking at the top and you can continue down into South Park. bring a picnic lunch and some bikes for a great afternoon

Boreas Pass is an old mining road, with plenty of history and scenic views, well worth the drive. Don't forget your camera!

We drove the Boreas Pass road and loved it!! Yes, the road is mostly dirt, and even closer to the top is very rough in a car, and there is a lot of one lane blind curves, but so worth it!!! Just go slow & just remember people going up have the right of way (yield when you are coming down). We stopped at every pull off & got out & took photos. Once you get to the top, there are some old buildings & the train car is now gone, but you can hike up to the summit from the pass. You can continue on at the top, but I’m not sure where it comes out at. We chose to go back down the way we came up. Look for the rock a little way up for good photo opportunity of the mountains, lake & town below!

You’ll definitely get amazing views especially of the fall colors, but my oh my, you’ll fear for your life. When we went, traffic was nonexistent at first and then we found ourselves suddenly surrounded with hazardous traffic coming and going along one of the narrowest stretches of road near a cliff. This road is not built for two-way traffic, least of all crowded two-way traffic. And then you add in the selfish, oblivious other drivers who are not paying attention — from parking in the middle of the road to get their selfies to forcing their way down the mountain when oncoming traffic is at the greatest risk along the steep drop-offs of the mountainside. We were looking forward to a beautiful Sunday drive but found ourselves anxious and fearful because of the poor drivers we were surrounded by. We cut our drive short not even two miles in so we could get the hell out of there...

Excellent scenery, the Pass summit is very interesting, 21mile Pass road has some rough spots, but go slow and any vehicle can travel it (in the summer). Highly recommend if you’re in the Breckenridge or Fairplay area.

This was absolutely stunning. We hiked at the bakers trail area and absolutely gorgeous. Very slow drive so couldn’t do the entire road due to
Time. Definitely a lifetime Memory!

We stayed the weekend in Breckenridge and decided to take this beautiful drive on our way home. The pass will take you from Breckenridge to Como. It took about 45 minutes to drive from one side to the other. The road is dirt the whole way and it got a little rough in a few spots but we made it just fine in a car, not an SUV or 4x4. The road does have some very narrow spots but nothing too scary or dangerous. The Aspen trees were just starting to change colors and they were absolutely beautiful. The views alone made this drive worth it. There were a few places that you could pull over and hike. There were a few spots along the way that had a lot of foot and bicycle traffic but as long as you are driving at a reasonable speed you will be fine. There was a few structures at the top of the pass such as an old railroad car and a couple of other buildings and this seemed to be a very popular spot for people to pull over and get and walk around. We did not stop here so I can't give too many details on what all was there. I would highly recommend anyone who wants to take a nice drive through some beautiful scenery to drive over this pass. The only reason I didn't give this review a rating of 5 is because of the condition of the dirt roads.

This is a gravel road and you need to go slowly, but you get terrific views from up here. There are places to pull over and hike.

We went to Co to see the color change. Boreas Pass was suggested and we had a jeep. It starts of paved then changes to a dirt road. It was fun to be off-road and the pass was wide enough for 2 cars most the time. It is quite bumpy with lots of pot holes. The colors were nice however if you want to see some of the same things take the vail trip on paved road and you will be just as happy.

We saw so many different scenic/picturesque backdrops. The ride was a little long, but well worth it. The cabin at the end that the railroad works used to stay in was pretty cool and made for great pictures. Have a blast and take it in...so beautiful!

We were there at the height of the aspen fall color, so brilliant and beautiful! The drive and or walk is amazing. It is a narrow dirt mountain road to be taken with a grain of patience and caution; it is well worth the drive to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

I was able to see the pass all the way during summer while driving and on my recent winter visit, i was able to walk to see my favorite look out covered in snow. What a beautiful area. Further along the pass was the first time I was able to see a moose up on the mountain side.

Took a drive out to Breckenridge our last full day. Saw everything from snow to foliage. Nice typical ski town filled with restaurants and shops...but tucked in here and there were some unique things. Then we took a ride up Boreas Pass. Beautiful scenery and one way dirt road where only one car can pass at a time in most areas. Wish the weather was more cooperating for the pictures .. but that’s what happens in these beautiful mountains.

Nice views of mountains and forests while driving to and from Gold Point Resort. Also, a look at some very nice mountain homes, of which several can be rented for larger groups.

There are various bus stops around Breckenridge with names and times of pick up. We chose Boreas Pass for an overview of the area and sights.

Enough said, you just have to experience it for yourself. It's a bit bumpy, so the 4WD jeep was nice, but not absolutely necessary.

Boreas Pass offers an array of activities from scenic drives, hiking for many skill levels, watching wildlife & seeing historic landmarks. Boreas Pass offers many dispersed camping sites options. Fun for the whole family or friend outings.

We enjoy this easy trail in winter every time we are in Breckenridge.Easy, beautiful, great views, nice parking.

Boreas Pass is a must do when visiting Breckenridge. Originally built for train service to the area when mining was King, it is a breathtaking adventure that is doable in a minivan!

A short drive out of Breckenridge....we drove to the first trailhead but realized it was taking us away from the scenery, so we hiked back and traveled more up the road and got some nice views!

I took my grandsons over the pass. Coming from Breckinridge the road is hard to find. It is near the railroad park. The drive is relatively easy for 2wd vehicles. A few places are narrow and you need to be careful for some reckless drivers. The water tank and summit park are worth stopping for. Loved it. Nice views and wildflowers.

The colors were beautiful and except for the first couple of miles from 285 driving towards Breckenridge the road was smooth. Bumpy alittle at the top also but my subaru drove it nicely. Was nice drive on a clear sky sunny day!

We drove the route from Breckenridge to Como. I've read where some people turn around at the summit (Boreas Continental Divide) and go back to Breckenriidge, but making the full loop allows you to go through FairPlay and back up the 9 North to Breckenridge.
The road is gravel and rough stone in some places so be prepared to go slow. The speed limit is 10 MPH and that is the right speed for this terrain. It can be done in a regular automobile during he dry weather but you need to be aware of some of the deep potholes and will have to avoid them. There are plenty of pull offs to admire the views, DON'T try to drive and look at the scenery at the same time. THERE ARE NO FACILITIES so go before starting the trip. Take water and make sure you have sufficient gasoline. (The bathrooms at the summit are locked).
The drive is very dusty so don't expect to have your windows down the whole way.

If you are staying in Breckenridge this a very close by. The views are fantastic all the way. The road is rough but drivable as long as you go slow. You will also have to pull to the side at times due to the oncoming traffic on this narrow road. If you do the entire loop out it will take about 3 hours with some short stops. Try to do this on a clear day for the maximum views.

Went 9/15/17 - some aspen are still green, some have turned yellow, and more than in previous years are brilliant orange. Great views, photo ops, etc. It is a dirt road, and while I agree you don't need 4WD/AWD, I am glad I didn't have a sports car - there were some spots where it was rough, also places where it is only one lane. Make sure you get gas before you go - no services along the way.

We had a great day walking around and lunch at out door bistro.Prices were okay, views were great! Want to go again next spring! Boreas Pass was stunning too! Joan

We did the Baker Tank trail "loo", which was taking the trail from the trail head at the parking lot to the Baker Tank, the walking down Boreas Pass Road back to the parking lot. The round trip was 6 miles up 900 ft elevation, took 3 hours (due to the numerous photos we took), and was of moderate difficulty. Although I would not call this a "must do," it was a very nice hike with a lot of fantastic views for photographing.

It's a nice workout to ride up to Boreas Pass from downtown Breckenridge. The road's in great shape--I did it on my gravel/road bike with no issues. It takes about an hour to cover the 9 miles or so to the top. Go early to avoid the car traffic. So nice that I did it twice in one week. I plan to come back to do it again when the Aspen leaves are turning.

This is a very scenic trip and I highly recommend it. The road is seasonal, so if there is snow on the ground you may find you have missed the chance to experience this one. During winter, don some snowshoes and do a moonlight hike from the Breck based parking lot to the edge of the cliffs that overlook the outskirts of Breck. Just be careful, there are no road guards and it would be easy to take a seven hundred foot tumble. In the summer, as you drive to Como, be sure and stop by the old railroad building where the tree stumps are over a hundred years old.

We were excited to see the road had finally opened. The drive was beautiful. We were in an SUV which easily made it over the bumpy road. It’s an easier drive than many of the roads over passes and less scary than most. We’re going back for fall colors in September.

Great drive from Breckenridge to the pass. Well maintained dirt road in the summer. Views are spectacular and hiking trails pull off from everywhere along the road. You could spend the entire summer just along this road and not run out of new places to explore.

We took this drive based upon the reccomendations found on TA. It took a long time to go completely up and over and back to Breck but well worth the time. We only had a regular car so suggest doing so only in the summer on dry roads. otherwise need four wheel drive or jeep. unpaved road all the way

If you want a fairly low threat way to see some stunning high alpine scenery, Boreas Pass Road is just the ticket. If you are also possessed of hearty legs and lungs, it makes a fine bike ride as well, with opportunities to loop back on excellent singletrack.

We drove this road several times between the town of Breckenridge and The Lodge. It was a very easy drive.

This drive gives you a taste of nature and the mountains just outside of Breckenridge. Beautiful views! The road is a bit tight so courtesy and common sense a must, especially for those not used to driving in mountains. Also no bathrooms, gas stations, or services available until you drive down into South Park area on the other side, so be prepared.

Beautiful Drive and even gravel portions of the road are in very good shape. Plenty of options to take short or long hikes - just be prepared as the air is thin (high elevation!) and weather can change.

You will not be bored on this road. There are some amazing views and things to see. A lot of history on this trip. Take your time and enjoy everything.

Parked just outside the start of the road. Easy walk along a dirt road with beautiful views. Good for kids and "oldies" like us.
Breath taking views!
We drove up the Boreas Pass as suggested by our hotel and we were not disappointed. The views were beautiful. At the top there is an old railroad car and the Black Powder Pass. Black Powder Pass was a beautiful hike so don't miss that while your there.
