Heavily Trafficked Trail

By Fei L |

Echo Canyon Trailhead is only 5’ away from Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain Resort & Spa. We went early 7:30am and plenty parking available. It is rated difficult trail with rough climbing. The view was rewarding at top, even at half way. On our way down, too many people climb up. People take turns at narrow points.

An exhilarating climb

By George S |

Make this climb if you even think you might be able. It’s challenging but it was very satisfying to reach the top.
My brother and I (mid 60’s) climbed in just under two hours. It took the same to come down. I’ll admit we were pretty whipped afterwards, but a lot of younger (and fitter) folks made the trip without trouble. Bring water.

Evening Visits

By Paul F |

At 6pm it was a very hot islamic 102F degrees and it had many caves in which one of them could be a model of Muhammad's cave.

CAUTION

By Penelope E |

Winter season is here and this is a cautionary review. Visitors love the Camelback mountain and the reasons are obvious BUT there are things you need to know.

Look at the weather for the day, dress in layers, wear sunscreen, wear a hat, and bring LOTS of water and snacks. We are a dry climate which offers lovely weather and temps but drains the body of precious fluids quickly. Every year our ERs see tourists for dehydration. The next caution is stay away from the cactus. Yes, they are beautiful but those spikes will imbed in your skin and are most unpleasant. Wear proper shoes and don't hike alone.

Follow these simple rules and you will be rewarded with spectacular views and pictures of this amazing part of the country.

Challenging, Fantastic Hike

By Monica_W1970 |

This is a CLIMB. If you're not in condition to boulder and scamper up rock faces using your hands, this will be a difficult hike. My hands were a bit raw by the end so wear gloves if you have them. Shoes with deep tread are also recommended.

Our family had a great time doing this hike. It's difficult, we needed a few breaks and our thighs were a bit sore the next day but we would do it again in a heartbeat. It was fun, challenging and amazing once you got to the top.

Highly recommend.

Fantastic Views!!

By 417Ladyface |

We were lucky and managed to park on the street at the foot of the trail head - no uber needed! The first 1/8 mile is easily navigated and fairly solid, maintained rock. Once you get past the first 1/4 mile it gets increasingly more difficult. Make sure you have proper hiking boots, plenty of water, and sunscreen! We had a blast, and the views were well worth the hike. The final scramble to the summit puts your fear of heights to the test, but is absolutely worth the view from the top.

We were blessed with a perfect day weather wise, a nice breeze, and best of all a guy with a guitar providing entertainment.

Echo Canyon Trail

By RandyYZF |

This is an awesome hike, show up early for a parking spot and to beat the heat. By 0800 the parking lot can be full. Wear proper shoes and take plenty of water. It is a steep hike and the last half involves climbing through boulders. Expect to be several hours but the view and challenge are awesome

Fun hiking experience!

By ALINER_JAS |

We were so happy with our experience hiking Camelback and would definitely recommend it. However, we were lucky to to get a couple dry afternoon hours on a rainy day to squeeze in the hike without crowded trails. Normally I believe Camelback is super crowded which would be difficult maneuvering around people.

BACHELORETTE PARTY/SHORT GIRLS - YOU WANT THIS HEADS UP

By Alexis R |

I saw Camelback "hike" on the bachelorette itinerary and thought oh cute, they probably found a moderate very quick hike that has great photo opps - this is going to be great.

THIS AINT NO LEISURE HIKE AND IDK WHY THEY DONT JUST CALL IT ROCK CLIMBING.

If you're short, prepare to have to lift your entire body up on a rock as your 5'5 friend ahead of you looks like they are enjoying themselves and having the time of their life. Think Parent Trap - twins are crushing it and loving life all while smiling at their future evil step mom, Meredith (me) struggling behind.

You can do it. But you can also stick by the pool and just "borrow" someone's peak for your instagram. Up to you

Great Trail; Very Challenging

By Frank K |

Very steep well-maintained trail. Many sections have stair-like steps and/or handrails - I really needed them. Restrooms and water fountain at parking lot. Exact address is 4925 East McDonald Drive.

Amazing, challenging hike

By Brightgalaxy |

One of the steepest mountains where I have climbed so far. I am a regular hiker and I took about 3 1/2 hours both ways in total.

Beautiful landmark

By lwolfe1 |

Phoenix is a beautiful place to
Visit and if you’re Looking for a challenging hike, Camelback Mountains or for you. Not for the faint of heart, it’s bigger than you think it is so packed plenty of water to stay hydrated. Don’t forget your camera it’s a beautiful place to snap photos of the beautiful red rocks against the desert landscape.

Great Scamble

By JdW70 |

Worth the effort, more of a rock scramble than hike. Very challenging and not for beginners. Parking is limited and tough to get around noon. Proper footwear and water are a must. A great way to spend a morning!

Cool

By 662E |

Okkkkk After reading review after review on here…I finally made it. I’m thankful for these because all of them are true. Take as much water as you can carry and snacks. Take your time. I wanted to literally cry about 90 percent of the way up…. I was tired lol … but I made it. Most will say that downhill is easier but I must say that I enjoyed the way up better than the way down. I’m 6’2 and my long legs go up easier than the baby steps to go down to avoid slipping . Lots of points require hand and feet to get up so be hands free if you can. Definitely wear hiking boots. Some people had on sneakers. I don’t see how they did it. Took about 4 hours round trip for me including plenty of stops and photos. Saw a roadrunner and a chipmunk. Cool. The other hikers were friendly and motivating each other. I’d do it again. Nice hike. Cholla trail is indeed closed.

Good morning workout but be prepared for crowds

By sttdiver |

I did this (Echo Canyon route) on a Sunday morning, so it might be less crowded during the week. I arrived at 6:30am and the huge parking lot was already full! However there are people coming and going all the time so it didn't take too long before I found someone on their way out. Once hiking, you gain about 1200 feet in a mile so it is steep! It is also rocky in places so the "hike" is more of a scramble at times. Bring good footwear for traction. I would recommend trail running shoes. My older road running shoes made it difficult to keep from slipping in places. I would also bring water! Other than that you don't need much.

Any skill level welcome, must be able to climb staors

By fwboyd3 |

Get there earlier if you want to snag a parking spot...dawn is the best time to get a spot.

No matter what your skill level, there are beautiful hike. There is one catch, anyone/everyone must be able to handle an initial stair-like climb to access all the trails. It’s actually easier once through the initial entrance. I mention this because my mom couldn’t do it due to mobility issues, unless she could skip the initial stage.

It’s gorgeous and has great views of Scottsdale and Phoenix. Plenty of rocks and iconic saguaro cactus. HIGHLY recommended

Very Cool

By A. Vinnie V |

While staying in Scottsdale went on a city tour. So on part of the tour they took us up to Camelback Mountain. It was very cool. Love the beautiful houses on the mountain and seeing of the different types of cactus, trees and wild life. Was very cool.

Hard climb, absolutely worth it.

By jake |

Nothing new to add here. It was an amazing experience. As other reviewers mention, it is a challenging climb. Part hike, part rock scrambling. I did Echo Canyon one day and Cholla the next. Echo is a little shorter with more steep portions. Cholla is longer, but a bit more gradual (until just before summit.) Can’t go wrong either way. Also, I did the climbs in running shoes with good tread. Wish I would’ve had legit hiking/trail footwear, as others recommend here. I’m a bit older, but still relatively fit and this was challenge. The views on the way up and from the summit are specular. Highly recommend checking it out.

Not for the faint of heart!

By Emily A |

I hiked Camelback Mountain last spring while visiting Phoenix, and let me tell you — it’s not for the faint of heart. I took the Echo Canyon Trail, which is only about 1.2 miles to the summit, but it felt like I climbed a vertical mile. The trail starts off steep and just gets steeper, with sections where you're literally scrambling over boulders using your hands. There are railings and posts to help in some spots, but it’s still a serious workout.

Challenging but worth it

By Chewy |

This was recommended by some friends. Essential for this walk, suitable footwear, pref walking boots, a camera, lots of water, sunscreen and gloves! Four of us decided to go but we were unaware how challenging it was. It is not a easy walk. We left the hotel in Scottsdale at 5.15am it took ten minutes in an Uber to get to the walk. Top tip try and pre book a cab as Uber’s are not too frequent at that time in the morning. Hotel advised us to walk up the Cholla route and down the other side as it’s an easier climb. The verdict is still out on that one!!!
The rangers will not allow cars to drop you at the entrance therefore they will leave you at the bottom of the road, the entrance to Cholla route is not signposted well, take a torch as if you go for sunrise it’s pitch dark at 5.30am.
Walk up the road and the entrance to the route is on the left hand side. It has a very small sign and is uneven under foot. It’s deceiving as you are surrounded by very expensive houses.
The first section of the walk is relatively easy (the first camel hump) but then after a flat section it gets very steep and challenging. At points we were climbing up rocks (following blue dots to show the way). I’m fairly active and love walking but there were points where climbing up was difficult, I cut my hand and a friend fell as it was very slippery. If you do not like heights do not even consider it as in parts you are climbing and on the other side is a sheer drop. All this said there were locals running up. Chatted to one lady who says she’s runs it every morning...
The views and the sunrise was spectacular. They do not allow you to walk up in the dark according to the signs but there were a lot of people climbing as the sun was rising. There is a real sense of achievement when you reach the top and the scenery was amazing. We were slightly concerned how we were going to get back down certain parts. We decided to go down the other side so in short to walk down to the main entrance. This was equally as challenging. At one point there is a hand rail which we found easier to slide down than climb!!!! Whole climb up and down took us approx 3 hours. We were back at the main entrance by 8.30am. At the entrance there is some information boards which detail the route and rate both as “extremely difficult”. There are also toilets and a water fountain. If you are getting an Uber back to hotel walk down road from car park as the rangers stop them coming into the car park. It’s a fantastic experience but not for the faint hearted.

Challenging from Echo Canyon

By Daryl C |

I can only speak to the route from Echo Canyon. It's not as easy as some reviewers may state. But it's worth it if you're up to the challenge. First, get there early. It's a decent size parking lot but it fills up quickly. And the rangers and police will keep you moving.

Wear solid shoes as the last two-thirds of the trail are very, very rocky. We had hiking boots and I overheard several people wish they'd worn more sturdy shoes.

The hike covers less than three miles roundtrip. But you can more than 1700 feet in that time. It can take 2-3 hours to complete.

The first third is very easy. A stroll with a few steep sections. Then you'll get to a sign that highlights the coming challenges. Read it.

After the sign, the first challenge are two very steep sections. How steep? There are two sets of hand rails to pull yourself up a 45-degree rock face. The rock sees a lot of traffic so it's gotten pretty slick.

After the steep hand rail section, there's a brief easy section. Not flat but easy. Then you start scrambling up several chutes of large rocks. Most people use they hands and feet. Be careful. The rocks are coarse and a slip here will leave a mark.

The top is a 360-degree panoramic of the Sccottsdale/Phoenix area. Take in the views.

The way back down requires good foot placement and sturdy knees.

The hike is very much worth it. For the challenge and the views. Just know what you're really getting it.

Great hike!

By Marianne Mikami |

This was a great surprise during our visit to Phoenix! It exceeded our expectations.
It was quite a challenge, specially at the end, when a bit of rock climbing is required. Nothing very difficult, but for those not very experienced like me, it requires more effort.
Don’t forget to take a lot of water!

Difficult to climb

By Emmanuel |

Great for exercising, but not so much for leisure hike. Views of city at summit are ok, nothing majestic. Gotta use your hands to climb in many places. Most people hiked half way only. We hiked up the echo trail and down the cholla trail. Struggled a little at some steep areas going down but if you take your time you'll figure it out. Blue dots mark the cholla trail.

Great hike but crowded

By Amy H |

Good hike but crowded at peak times. The hike is physically challenging if you are in bad shape this is not a hike for someone who is not active. Our 10yr old hiked it with us but she is very athletic. Beautiful view from the top. Hiking shoes recommended.

Youve got to experience it

By stephespinoza |

You should be an experienced hiker to take on this trail...either of the camelback trails. Good shoes and lots of water. Be prepared to get your hands dirty. You will have the best cardio workout youve had in a long time. Its crowded at times, go early. The parking lot gets full and noone wants to sit around waitiing in a car to hike...go somewhere else if its full. But come back, this is the best hike in Phoenix. And maybe one of the most difficult in the city proper.

Gorgeous views!

By 105dmm |

Hiked it LOVED it!!! So gorgeous! Challenging, but so happy I did it! Met so many fun and interesting people on the hike!!!

Classic Phoenix Hike

By Melinda B |

This is an interesting hike: impressive red rock cliffs, nice rock scrambling sections, good views of the city...and maybe some chuckwallas. It IS quite crowded though, and parking can prove troublesome. Go on a weekday if possible.

Good hike

By THOMAS C |

Some parts of the hiking trail were quite challenging and tended to slow down to allow people to pass in both directions. Carry water to stay hydrated. Pace yourself as it gets a little more difficult closer to the top.

Amazing! Best girls weekend!

By Kristin W |

Camelback is gorgeous. And treacherous. And amazing. Our girls weekend was made better because we climbed the Cholla Trail together one Saturday morning. The views were spectacular, the workout was challenging and we had so much fun together. The trail guides describe it as very difficult and it’s right on! But follow the trail (sometimes it’s hard to see markets so stop and take a minute to look) and take your time and you’ll do awesome.

One of the best hike I have done

By Chirag |

Absolutely amazing hike. Various different elevation. Some sections are difficult to hike. Recommended for those who have some experience in hiking. Wear comfortable clothes and take bottle water

Great hike

By Thomas J |

This is a very challenging climb. And when you get to the top the view is fantastic. You have to be in Fairly good condition with the correct kind of shoes to climb this mountain. There are walking paths all the way to the top.

Sore, but SO happy I climbed it!

By Christina Estrada |

Do this hike while you're visiting! If you like outdoor activities and are in decent shape I would recommend the Echo Trail. What they didn't tell me when I started was that this trail was less of a hike and more of a rock climb. Be prepared to use all fours and if you are taking children or the less physically inclined this may be too difficult. In that case there is another trail on the opposite side of the mountain that may be more appropriate for their fitness levels. I was looking for a fun adventure, a little challenge, with a huge pay off and I found it here on the echo trail leading to the top of Camelback Mountain. There's no doubt I will be sore for days but it was some of the most fun I've had while I've been here. Do not go in the middle of the day when it is hot. Try to go very early and if you get up there by six or seven you can see the sunrise. I did not make it in time for sunrise and by the time I headed back down the last 20 minutes was in the scorching sun.
Such an incredible experience I'm so glad I did this!!!!

Extreme hike

By Sarah Clark |

Well worth the climb! Such a great 360 view from the top. No need to do a workout if you get this hike in!

Tough but amazing views

By Steffen S |

We took this hike with our two kids and we all made it to the top! We definitely took our time and went early in the morning so it wasn't too hot. We had a overcast day which definitely helped. Also get there early to get parking. As we were going back down the mountain you could tell how many more people had arrived. It's not easy but the views at the top are definitely worth it!

Amazing view from trail.

By Jean M |

My husband and I climbed the mountain this past Thursday. I was only able to go up to the place where you can see almost all around. Unfortunately I was not in condition to go rock climbing to the very top. Getting to this point wasn’t too hard for someone who goes to the gym three times a week to walk/around a track. My husband did get to the top. You do have to party at least a quarter mile away. What was amazing is the traffic on the trail! And it’s still late winter there. I can’t image what it’s like on the weekends or the summer! It’s worth the effort if you are able to hike the distance. I’d say it’s a 7 in difficulty but getting to top is a 10.

Come prepared!

By Yvonne P |

Listen: this hike is crowded. This hike is difficult. Wear sunscreen, a hat, and please please have proper shoes - preferably ankle high. Hiking gloves would come in handy as well. You are climbing fairly vertical and there are rocks rocks rocks.
The view is unbelievable. We are experienced hikers, but one of our daughters (who didn't listen to my advice) wore shorts and sneakers, and she got pretty scraped up and kept complaining about her treads.
Personally, I loved this hike and was proud of the accomplishment, for sure! And - what a view! 360 degrees!

Wow, Camelback a tough one

By CanuckAlberta |

I am an older guy but in pretty good shape and I found Camelback challenging. We started at Echo Canyon trailhead and did the entire route over to the Cholla trailhead. If you want to hike the entire trail I would recommend this direction as the Echo Canyon is tougher with much more scrambling so you might as well get the toughest part over with first. There is less scrambling as you descend down the Cholla trail. At the top the view is amazing and a just reward for your effort. If you are looking for the way to the summit with the least effort I would recommend approaching from Cholla trailhead, hike to the summit, and then retrace your steps back to Cholla. That being said Cholla only offers on street parking along Invergordon Rd and the trail head is not that well marked. There is a restroom, bike racks, and water at the Cholla trailhead as well. I am glad I did the hike but would caution anyone who is not in great shape, does not have proper hiking shoes, or cannot tolerate heat to maybe look for an alternative.

Great Hike (challenging!)

By Mike S |

After several trips to Phoenix, I finally made time to hike Camelback. Glad I did! The views are amazing, and it is so easy to get to. It was a lot more challenging than we expected. Definitely not for the casual hiker. The final stretch is very steep and strenuous.

I do wish we had started a little earlier though, as it was getting pretty hot by the time we finished. We started at 6:30 and reached the summit around 8:00. Only took about 45 minutes getting down. Fortunately we brought plenty of water, but the hotel pool was a welcome sight!!!

Most quintessential hike for your visit to Phoenix

By InspireTravelEat.com |

There are tons of hikes in Phoenix to do but if you’re visiting this is the Runyon Canyon of Arizona. It’s a challenging hike with 360 degree views and a place for good people watching along the way. Then head straight to old town for drinks and brunch. See my site for more hikes in the area.

Beutiful place, but don't go whenever its over 100 degrees.

By artwhite |

Best time to go is in the Spring when every thing is blooming. It truly is a desert Garden of Eden if you like desert plants. Cacti are unbelievable.

If that's Camelback Mountain, then this is Phoenix, Arizona

By Taylor B |

Camelback Mountain is to Phoenix, Arizona, what Lake Michigan is to Chicago or the Golden Gate Bridge is to San Francisco or the Gateway Arch is to St. Louis. It is a distinctive feature that is associated with the city. Camelback is a mountain whose English name is derived from its shape, which resembles the hump and head of a kneeling camel. It is a prominent and unmistakable landmark of the Phoenix metropolitan area, located in the Camelback Mountain Echo Canyon Recreation Area between the Arcadia neighborhood of Phoenix and the town of Paradise Valley. It also is a popular recreation destination for hiking and rock climbing. Not to mention photo ops. A cave discovered on the north slope of the mountain indicates that it was once used as a sacred site by the prehistoric Hohokam Culture before they abandoned the area in the 14th century. The mountain features two hiking trails that ascend 1,280 feet to its peak. The Echo Canyon Trail is 1.14 miles in length while the Cholla Trail covers 1.4 miles. Both are considered strenuous with steep grades, requiring a round trip time of 90 minutes to three hours. For rock climbers, the Praying Monk is a red sandstone rock formation on the northern slope that rises about 100 feet. The mountain lends its name to a major east-west street in the Phoenix area called Camelback Road that starts in Scottsdale and goes about 34 miles west past the West Valley suburbs of Goodyear and Litchfield Park.

Great view and worth the effort

By JoeBrannin |

I would not do it in the summer. Trail all the way to the top, and parts can be difficult. At places it becomes narrow. Make sure you take plenty of water, even in the winter.

Excellent Hike in the Heart of the City

By Robert D |

We are very lucky to have this hike right in city. Fun challenging terrain and beautiful views all along the way especially at the top. This is a very strenuous hike so be sure you are ready.

Annual Pilgrimage

By Nathan B |

Will keep going as long as we can. Super fun hike for the family. Everyone takes their own pace but everyone makes it to the top. Hard work at times but can manage if in good shape.

Challenging hike with my wife!

By Jake |

My wife and I took a long weekend trip to Phoenix and had Camelback Mountain on our list for weeks leading into the trip. I had hiked in Sedona and Flagstaff before, but she had never been to AZ before. I wasn’t sure how difficult it would be, but we were excited either way. We chose the Echo Canyon Trailhead because it seemed to be higher rated. We came on a Saturday at around 11am and the parking lot was very busy. We were fortunate enough to get a parking spot right as someone else pulled out. There is a bathroom right at the beginning of the trail head which was very nice. We started the hike and I must admit it was easier than I expected. I would consider my wife and I to be in good shape. As the hike went on, it got progressively harder. There were some steep ascents that you needed a railing for. The most challenging part of this hike is your footwork. There are so many rocks that you have to constantly choose where to put your feet. It adds a fun mental challenge to the hike. This is even more challenging on the way down. You can definitely slip if you are not careful. We made it to the top in about 1.5 or 2 hours with a few water breaks along the way. The view is incredible. You can see all of the valley area. The climb down is actually the hardest part because choosing your footing and potential to slip. Overall, this is a must-do if you are in the Phoenix area.

Great hike but not for the faint of heart or anyone with a fear of heights

By Tws |

Walked from my rental to the trailhead because there was no parking. The fist 3/4 of the ascent are a little grueling but not difficult. The last 1/4 (from the saddle to the top) was a little scary. It was less like hiking and more like rock climbing. I couldn’t not have done it were I fearful of heights. It wasn’t technically hard but it was easy to lose the trail (follow the blue marks on the rocks) and the stakes are high.

Trails End is the best!

By JMJ F |

Zofia and Kaylee at the bar are the BEST! Peter is so super accommodating! We go to camelback every single year and it gets bettter and better! The water park is amazing! Super five star everything!

Must to do

By Meire Q |

It’s beautiful place for hiking. It has an spectacular view.
The trail is mostly rock, and easy to navigate.

Cholla Trail to the top

By ndoak1 |

The Cholla Trail is just as described in many other reviews. Park on Invergordon Road and walk down a residential street to access the trailhead.

It is a very challenging uphill hike with great views up to a saddle at trail marker 26 that has a great view of downtown Phoenix.

From there, it becomes a scramble over boulders and up rock faces along a spine to the summit (marker 35, I think).

The trek is well worth the 360 degree views and the feeling of conquering this climb to the top of Camelback. Soon, though, it’s time to scramble back down...

Great way to start a day!

By Devyoung |

Great way to get outside!

We did the Chollas Trail. The 1st 1/2 is fairly straightforward - some steeper parts and a bit rocky at times, but mostly a trail that is easy to follow. The 2nd half becomes much more technical - much rockies with a less distinguished trail. At times some people use their hands to help get up. About 1/2 the people who "knew" wore gloves.

Took about 1 hour to get uo (with pictures, etc...) and about 45 minutes to get down. 2 hours in total with pics, etc at the top.

Also - easy to get ubers to/from. Very convenient from Scottsdale.

Absolutely Beautiful Place to Visit

By Tracieg |

We went with our 8 and 13 yr old and just did a short part of the trail. It was very manageable with the kids but must wear the right shoes. The park is open until sunset and this was definitely the right time to visit (at sunset). There is also adequate parking, bathrooms, and vending.

Be Prepared

By GLENDABAKER1 |

Take water and when you are half way through what you brought turn back. Don't go when its hot, you can't take your dog and you wouldn't want to. Unless you are FIT DO NOT EXPECT TO get to the top the fist time.

A great hiking trail rewards you with beautiful panaramic views!

By Jonathan H |

I hiked this little mountain while visiting Phoenix. The trail is well marked and mostly easy going apart from a couple of sections that required a bit of scrambling, especially on the way down. The panaramic views of the valley below were beautiful and well worth the effort.

More than a hike... quite a bit of bouldering! But sooooo good!

By MChods |

This is not an easy hike. Be prepared for a lot of bouldering! In the end, it's a really rewarding experience. I'd recommend getting there early. It's a popular place and parking is limited. Also, the trail gets busy, so the earlier you are up and down, the better the experience is without having to try and navigate rocks and people. The view is spectacular. Bring lots of water and some snacks!

Excellent hike

By IliaNc |

Simply love it! Stunning views. Beautiful flora. Exceptional! One should be careful as many rocks on a trail and on some part of the trail it is rather easy stumble upon. Efficient supply of water is a must. Sunscreen and boots.

Best way to see the Valley of the Sun

By Marco O |

I hiked Camelback last year with my friend early morning to avoid the afternoon heat. The trail head is located off Invergordon Road (64th St) off Cholla Lane. Street parking is minimal so plan accordingly. The summit is at an elevation of 2707 feet and it can take up to 2 hours round trip. You must bring a backpack with at least 3 bottles of water since this hike is very difficult if you are not an avid hiker. The last part of the hike you have to scramble to get to the zenith so bring gloves if necessary. Also, I recommend dressing accordingly. Hiking shoes are a must since the terrain has loose rocks and the surface is uneven. I also packed snacks such as granola bars, bananas and energy bars to keep up with my stamina. If you want to enjoy the view at the summit, bring a pair of binoculars. Overall this hike was moderate for me since I'm an avid hiker, but it can be very difficult for those who are not experience hikers.

GREAT

By London V |

Camel back mountain is really nice mountain. There is a beautiful city view. beautiful nature.Hard for 3-12year olds. great for 13 and above. this mountain gets hard when at the top. This hike is 3.1 miles long The hike time is 2-3 hours to get to the top. it is 1,540 feet high and 469m. P.s sorry this says a diffrent mountain :) have a grate climb.

Effort and Sweat will be worth it.

By Karen Scroggins |

Difficult hike to the top if you go completely across the mountain. But, the views from the top are worth any effort and sweat. Take lots of water. A must-visit for a once.

It’s ok

By Los T |

The mountain offers a 1 mile trail with so many warnings.... yes, it’s in the Arizona sun but it’s not difficult for normally-fit people. There seems to be a high number of half-naked hikers doing the trail. Free parking, nice views.

Not for the Weak. Know Your Limits.

By craig1086 |

Man this climb will humble you. First off, only the Echo Canyon Trail is open. Second, bring at least a half gallon of water, minimum. You will need it. Bring hydration tablets as well. Third, get there in the morning, preferably as early as you can to find good parking(free). The first half will give a false sense of security, as it isn't that challenging. Then the real climb begins. Be prepared to stretch, and use both hands and both feet to climb in certain parts, as the trail gets incredibly steep. The trail is mostly rocks, so the heat will factor in, and it's indeed slippery in certain parts. The views at the top are worth it, but you will earn it. Give yourself at least 2.5hrs to go to the top and come all the way back down. Hiking boots or good-grade trail shoes are a MUST.

Beautiful Mountain

By Randy Ward |

Beautiful mountain that provides signs to tell about the mountain and all it's habitat. This is a must see.

Well Worth The Effort

By PacoFlp |

Any committed hiker should make this hike. The view from peak is incredible. I strongly preferred the Echo Canyon trail to Cholla trail, notwithstanding the false claim that Cholla is easier (it’s not). I’ve made it to the top three times and am never disappointed.

Mostly easy hike but challening in the final push

By paubuls |

We arrived for 5:30 to beat the heat and were not the only ones! Obviously a popular destination but everyone we bumped into were quite friendly and so it didn't take away from the experience. The first portion of the hike is quite manageable but in the last quarter it requires some scrambling up boulders. The view is definitely worth it! Could see all of the surrounding area. Took ~3 hrs for the round trip via Cholla trail. Take lots of water!

Strenuous, hot, but worth the effort!

By Nancy S |

Husband and I are 63 and in reasonably fit condition. I went 3/4 of the way but he was able to reach the top and said it was well worth the hike up. Lots of rocks, so wear sturdy hiking shoes, and bring plenty of water!

Family Hike

We hiked Camelback with the family this weekend. We are in slightly above average shape and had our 14 yr old daughter with us. We hiked up the Echo side and down the other. It was definitely demanding but doable. We had 2 bottles of water each and were fine.

Challenging But Fun

By Beth |

A fun adventure! Get to the parking lot by 6am and brings lots of water. Wear good shoes and dress in layers. The round trip hike will take 1-2 hours depending on the speed you go at. The boulders are challenging, but fun and very different from any hiking I have ever done.

Best winter hike in Phoenix!

By Matthew Gontram |

Definitely choose this hike in cooler months. Mid week to avoid crowds and fitness weirdos! The views are superb and sunset/sunrise amazing

2020 Vacation

Loved seeing this! We didn't hike this but there were several people there hiking it. We drove back into some of the streets and got different views of it. A couple we talked to said it was well worth the hike to see the view.

Interesting views

By nativeNO |

Passed it by several times when going to other attractions. Finally had a stop. Spare, HOT and beautiful. Would be a good hiking area in a cooler time.

Difficult but Rewarding

By Emily C |

I moved to Phoenix a few months ago and when I first attempted this hike I barely made it half way to the top before I got too exhausted and had to turn around. Mountains out here are quite different than Michigan hills that I’m used to! After going multiple times I’m now a regular and try to go a few times each week! The view at the top is gorgeous and so rewarding. The hike itself is very difficult and has a lot of rock scrambling at the top (which makes it kinda fun). You HAVE to do this hike but only if you’re in good shape and have good knees!

Great views!

By Quicktrip_10 |

I definitely recommend this activity to those visiting during the cooler months. The hike can get quite strenuous at times as you're scrambling over rocks and pulling yourself up and over. If you're not as fit, I'd still recommend it to folks- just don't go all the way to the top. It can get quite busy on the trails- a friendly reminder is that those going up-hill have the right of way. It's important to wear appropriate shoes, as certain parts can get slippery due to the rocks. There are also parts of the hike that have drop offs on both sides (in case you're nervous of heights). If you can have someone drop you off & pick you up, I would recommend that as parking can be quite a pain. Bring your selfie sticks! The view at the top is incredible.

fun hike with nice views

By Ben H |

My wife and I were on vacation in Phoenix and wanted to do some hiking. The hotel suggested Camelback and we went there for a hike. We had to park pretty far away to get to the entrance even being early but it was well worth it. It was a fun easy hike with nice views. Go early to beat the crowds though.

A great hike with beautiful view, but come prepared for a challenging hike.

By Nels |

This is a pretty challenging hike for those who are not frequent hikers. Don't come to Camelback in flip-flops with no water.
This is a popular hike, so parking can be an issue. Come very early or during the week to lessen that issue.
This isn't a casual walk up to an overlook, this is a steep and challenging hike with some rock scrambles. Come with good hiking footwear, plenty of water, and sun protection. The top is a great place to stop for a snack (along with everyone else). If you want an extra challenge, go up one side, down the other, then back over to your starting point. I was headed up to the top for my second time that hike feeling all bad-ass when a man who looked to be in his 60s who had just passed answered someone's question that this was his fourth time headed up that day. I hope I am that fit when I am his age.

I love it here

By cherrycash |

There are beautiful views here. Lots of people out walking and enjoying the scenery. We drove up a little so we could see the beautiful houses and the city.

Please Don't Die or Have to be Rescued on Camelback Mountain!

By AKG_8 |

I love this mountain but rated it terrible because there are so many rescues of visitors who were totally unprepared for the extreme heat of the hot months in Phoenix, and tragically, deaths. I live nearby and have hiked up this mountain several times a week for decades. In cooler months this is a challenging but excellent hike. In hot months, many, many people have required rescue, primarily due to heat related illness and dehydration. On one hot day in 2020, 5 people were air lifted off on the same day. People have died on this mountain, especially in hot weather which can be from April through October. OUT OF TOWN VISITORS OFTEN HAVE NO IDEA HOW QUICKLY THE EXTREME HEAT CAN HARM OR EVEN KILL THEM, especially when combined with dehydration. Almost no out of town visitors carry enough water or pre-hydrate. EVEN IF SOMEONE HAS ENOUGH WATER, THEY CAN STILL DIE FROM HEAT STROKE. It's frustrating that so many people head onto these trails in hot weather totally unaware of the dangers. When done correctly; in cool weather, or at sunrise in hot weather--WITH PRE-HYDRATION (drink plenty of water in the hour leading up to your hike!!) and carrying AT LEAST 32 ounces of water, preferably more, and preferably something with electrolytes, it can be a challenging but great hike. However, on a regular basis local hikers see out of town visitors trying to hike the mountain in extreme heat. It doesn't matter how fit you are, if you are not prepared for the heat it can become a life & death situation very quickly. As PHX Parks and Rec says, Take a Hike, Do it Right. There's also a FB page called PLEASE DON'T DIE OR HAVE TO BE RESCUED ON CAMELBACK MOUNTAIN!

Amazing views.

By kcworkingmom |

Just wish I could buy up one of these homes. Beautiful views. Love the mix of dessert with mountains. Worthy of a relaxing drive.

Exciting Hike

By jcgonring |

Strenuous hike for active explorers. High traffic hike on a weekday- couldn’t imagine a weekend, but enough space to savor and enjoy the view!
Top to bottom took approximately three hours for a leisurely hike. Steep, fun travel for those seeking off road adrenaline adventures. Pack a small bag for water!!

Hard trail.....but worth it

By Dave |

Very steep trail, wear good shoes! Was there the day after New Years and the weather was perfect for such an adventure. It was cool at the start, warmed a bit when sun came out from behind some clouds. Be ready for crowds, some people are running this trail so be ready to let them pass. Amazing views on the summit - bring your best camera. I took Echo Canyon Trail and I would certainly recommend it.

Cholla Track - medium effort and a great view

By Been-n-Done |

An easily accessible hiking track that gives a great view of Phoenix and associated cities / suburbs.
We didn't go to the top (which I regret) but there is a good spot around half way up that gives views of both sides. I think this is called "the saddle" .
A great mid afternoon walk that successfully fought off my desire to sleep and no doubt will help with jet lag.
Recommend minimum 1 Litre of water, a hat and SPF50+ sunscreen.

Nice staff, rundown property. Needs lots of love & attention. Great location with many restaurants close by.

Fun drive

By Tad1950 |

Fun drive up the side of the mountain to view the unique houses. Great view, easy drive. You can only drive the public road and not to the top of the mountain.

One of my favorites!

By Art Shaw |

Awesome hike! Took our kids ages 5 and 7. Great spot to catch the sunset and take some photos. Highly recommend if you're in the area!

Challenging but fun - be prepared!

By Paula |

First off, challenging parking. Went on a Wednesday at 1pm. Circled around the roundabout at Echo Canyon side several times before roadblocks to parking lot opened up. I’ve done this hike before and wanted my kids (ages 12,13,17) to experience it, so I was determined! Other reviews suggesting Uber is a great idea. Second, come PREPARED. With bellies full from InNOut burgers and fries (!) we didn’t need snacks BUT almost didn’t bring enough water, even on a beautiful 70 degree day. For a day this temperature, you’ll need at least 32oz per person, more if temps are warmer. We were rationing at the end. Not a good look. You’ll see people walking up with a small water bottle from the gas station. They won’t make it very far. If you run out, TURN AROUND, because the trail only gets tougher. You’ll maybe make it DOWN without much water, but you won’t safely make it further UP the climb. ALSO, hiking shoes/boots are a MUST. Do NOT attempt this hike in tennis shoes, Tevas, Birks or flip flops. Saw so many silly people: Women in long skirts (tripping on each boulder) people in sandals, a few with small children, encouraging them to forge ahead...etc. If you sprain your ankle, it’s a long way down. If your kid sprains an ankle, it’s even longer.
The elevations and boulders will humble you. There are two railings for two very steep spots along the lower part of the hike but you’re on your own for the rest. You’ll need your hands AND feet for climbing, so a backpack is also a must for each person carrying their own water...etc. We are an active family (hockey, soccer, etc) so this was challenging, but very doable. I’m 53 and in decent shape (proudly didn’t even “feel” that I had done this hike the day after, although my kids did!) I gotta say though, that I thought it was harder this time than when I hiked it 4 years ago. Thanks, quarantine shut down!

Awesome

By Wayeasy |

We had to park exactly one mile away so consider taking an uber to the start. It was much harder than I thought. It was about 1.6 miles from the start of the trail to the top. I’m 55 and in pretty good shape and the trail requires you to go on hands and butts at some points. We didn’t bring any water with us and round trip from the car was just over 5 miles. It is really worth the hike but it’s not easy. Check out our pictures.

Great scenery

By Kim H |

We drove around it while touring the city. A beautiful backdrop. We missed the sunset but it was a great drive

Difficult but worth it

By Mary C |

Amazing hike, but definitely no joke. I have some experience hiking the AT and am relatively in shape but this was completely different. It took me about an hour and a half and I started at 6:45am. I would recommend going early because it was already pretty hot as we were coming down around 9:30. Definitely worth the view but a hard hike with constant rock scrambling.

Girls trip

By Denise B |

Wow is all I can say. I love AZ. The mountains, the cleanliness of the state itself.... Sedona was even more beautiful.... if you are going to AZ in the winter Sedona is a must...

A moderate but worthwhile hike

By Georgetheseal |

I've done quite a fair bit of hiking and would say that this is a moderately difficult hike. It's not hugely steep but does require some rock scrambling after about 10 mins in towards the summit.

The hike is a lot of fun and also recommended for trail running as it's short. The views provide a 360 panoramic view over Phoenix.

Tougher than expected

By CG5454 |

Good place to go for a hike. Went for a bachelor party outing and was not disappointed. Definitely more of a climb at parts rather than a hike

Beautiful views

By Amber406 |

Such a super cool view the hike was pretty but definately a bit rough. Gets pretty steep also ran into some less than friendly hikers.

Early Morning Cholla Trail Hike

By PKPOWELL |

I have been wanting to climb this mountain and chose a relatively cool Monday morning to avoid the heat and crowds. The Cholla trail took about three hours round trip to the summit and back, On the way up there were a few experienced hikers. My only concern is that the trail is not marked as well as it could be and novices could easily stray into dangerous spots. The views all the way up and down are spectacular. I would suggest wearing long pants to protect the knees from scratches, climbing shoes with traction, a collapsible hiking stick and light gloves to protect the fingers from scraping. By the time I finished the trail, I saw only one person who appeared to be older than me and she looked like a pro. For older knees and hearts this is extremely difficult with infinite tripping hazards.

Once in Lifetime Experience

By Afshin F |

Definitely challenging and rewarding! It was very useful to have read the reviews before heading out as the parking was definitely a challenge (Lyft worked well, as I went up on Echo trail and came down on Cholla. 2.5 hr round trip)

Amazing views, challenging hike!

By Rachel S |

Not for the faint of heart! It will take alot out of you to make it to the top using either the Echo Mountain or Cholla trails. Parking is difficult in both trail head locations. Go early or during the mid week to avoid the crowds. Bring lots of water and enjoy the challenge. The views are worth it! Make sure your hands are free, you will need them to help you climb in certain areas!

Pretty Mountain

By Alexa S |

This is a great mountain.
I have been by it before but have never stopped and taking a picture of it .
This looks like a camel.

Traumatically more difficult than I expected!

By Meagan S |

This “trail” was more like a free solo rock climb most of the way, especially nearing the summit. I totally did not expect it and was surprised how dangerous it was at certain parts, one misstep could lead you off the side of a cliff! This should really only be done by experienced hikers/rock climbers. I’m 31, hike, and workout regularly and it was very difficult for me, others I passed along the way felt the same. Really fun but a bit traumatizing!

Great hike

By Patty M |

It was everything we were told! We hike at home bit this does not compare. We got there early (sunrise) and we had no problem parking. If you read about it, it tells you that it’s a strenuous hike and to bring lots of water to keep hydrated. We did not make it to the top and did not overdue ourselves but we had great views for what we did hike. My only problem was that there are obviously locals who run this hike and in our hike they expected people to move for them and one almost knocked over kids. But overall it was well worth it!

Fantastic Views!

By kamilouise13 |

We walked a little ways on cholla trail. Had a 7 year old with us that was not into hiking that day! It is just so beautiful here. A must see if you are in the area.

Wonderful views

By Jānis Baiža |

Took Echo Canyon trail to get to the top of the mountain. Great views to the Phoenix and near cities.

Amazing experience

By ProsperSunLover |

This was so much fun! It's challenging but so worth it in the end. My family of five did this over spring break. Took about 3 hours up and down the mountain. This is a difficult climb but so worth it!! Bring lots of water, there are no bathrooms on the cholla trail at all.

Beautiful

By Sheila K |

Crowded but I see why. .... The views! There are only 2 trails, you park at the bottom and go up.Not an easy hike.

Great view

By fnuss1 |

Definitely would do this when in Phoenix. You have to be in decent shape but not a Work out fanatic. Great view of city. Take your time and you’ make it. Bummer you may have to walk a bit to get to base of mountain. Obviously take water.

Great place for a hike

By SteveMT_1961 |

Lovely views driving to the mountain. Parking is limited. It can get very hot so be prepared with plenty of water, sun screen, and correct clothing & shoes. Apparently many people underestimate the heat and have to be rescued every year. It is a good hike around the mountain with stunning views although it was too hot for us to complete it in April at midday and we hadn't brought enough water. But there were plenty of people doing it and it looked like it was popular with joggers too.

Worth the Climb

By Scott E |

Challenging hike, even in 70 degree weather, but very doable if you pace yourself. Bring lots of water, especially if you are not used to the dry air. Most of the warning we suspect are for the late spring and summer months when it is hot. Views are amazing even half way up. We hiked on a Friday morning which was enjoyable with ample parking and uncrowded trails.

Super fun, great workoutout

By bhill1234 |

This definitely was a trail that got both my husband and my heartrate up. we are fairly active outdoors, but have not climbed much. It was fun and exciting to do something new, and the echo trail up was challenging enough. The cholla trail down was supposed to be easier, but I felt it was just as hard going down as up. Overall very fun adventure. beautiful views from the top.

Not easy, but definitely worth it!

By kansasteacher2 |

My sister and I hiked the Echo Canyon Trail to the top of Camelback in February. The weather was absolutely perfect - not too hot at all. It took us three hours total to go up and back, including some time at the top to rest and eat a snack.
When we arrived at 8:00 a.m., the sign at the parking lot said "Lot Full", but the ranger moved it about a minute later and let us and several more cars in. I would suggest arriving very early, or be patient and you will get a spot. Taking an Uber is a good option as well.
The trail was quite busy, but it was not a problem. We frequently let others pass us. Wear hiking boots (not tennis shoes or sandals). Hiking poles would do you no good at all, as you need your hands frequently to get over rocks or to hold onto the railing.
Take plenty of water and salty snacks. Even though it is a short trail, it is difficult, and it almost certainly will take longer than you think.
The trail is quite steep, and most of it is very rocky, but I did it without really any problems. I'm a 50-something woman, in fairly decent shape, and I'm still a little sore two days later. But I'd happily do this hike again when back in the area.

Great!

By Layne S |

If you are in Phoenix and in reasonable health, you should do this hike from the Echo canyon. It's fun for all ages and offers great exercise, spots for lookouts, and places to relax. This is a must do especially with families. Challenging but doable.

Hike to the Summit

By Mark M |

Camelback mountain is one of the best hikes in the state of Arizona! It's a little rugged in parts and is not for the faint at heart but once you make it hand over hand up the railing location about half way up the trail it's slow and steady to the top. Bring plenty of water and enjoy the beautiful views at the top!

Nice views, good workout

By Thomas G |

Ok, so everyone seems to want to do this. Even on a Thursday morning it was crowded. It's strenuous and I find the use of the terms "hike" and "climb" misleading. I would classify this a mixed hike and 2nd class scramble. Climb seems to imply "rock climbing" (i.e. ropes) which is not the case. What is, is fitness and good knees! Hand rails and fencing have bee placed strategically in spots. It's worth the effort for beautiful views of the valley.

Must Climb Camelback!

By ashie b |

Don't let the double-black-diamond scare you off! Probably 85-90% of the hike is a dirt/rock path that only involves walking and stepping up sometimes. The end of the hike when getting close to the top is where the scrambling comes in. I rarely hike and I don't consider myself good at hiking, I'm just a runner and I was able to ascend and descend fine. There are some steep drop-offs but as long as you're patient and watch your step, you'll make it to the top which offers gorgeous 360 views of Phoenix. 100% worth the hike. It takes about 1.5 hours to ascend, .5 to spend at the top, and 1 hour to descend.

What a view

By Frank Alvarez |

omg the views are breathtaking..... it was pretty hot even for april but it was worth it... watch out for bugs tho!!!!!

Great hike! Read for tips!

By TravelwithHeather |

This is CHALLENGING! I am in good shape and enjoy hiking and it still took me about an hour and 15 to get to the top using the Echo Canyon trail.
Tips:
1. Go for sunrise! I got there around 4:30 and the gates were already open. A lot of what I read said the gates didn’t open UNTIL sunrise, but they ARE open before! It’s such a beautiful view at the top!
2. Do not hike this in the afternoon if you are not adjusted to the heat (in May-Oct). It is a very difficult hike and to do it in the direct sun would be hard!
3. LOTS of water!
4. On your way down...when you get to the bars, go backwards, almost like you are balaying in climbing, it’s easier on your joints and way faster!
5. There are bathrooms and water at the base of the Echo Canyon trailhead.
6. Use Echo Canyon if you are driving, Cholla has NO PARKING...you can Uber to the base though.

Overall, a MUST DO hike, the views at the top are beautiful and you get to see the whole Phoenix area. Enjoy!

Sign says “extremely difficult”. …they ain’t lyin’

By Todd d |

Incredible hike, but not for the faint of heart. It’s steep. Very steep. Beautiful views. Highly recommended. Going down isn’t any easier. Sure gravity is helping but at what expense. Be safe. You’ll remember this one for a long time.

Really Fun Hike!

By esuing |

Took us about 2 hours to reach the summit, however, that will vary for everyone. We took our time and took a lot of pictures. That last 25% gets a little more difficult, but I would say only maybe 6-10 more daunting sections. It's worth it to get to the top as the view is phenomenal. If you're going on a weekend, get there VERY early and the parking lot fills up extremely fast.

Bring small backpack to have your hands free

By 8675309bergman |

Was on the trail by 7:20 a.m. on a Wednesday and it was already busy. It took us 80 minutes up and 50 minutes down. I went through two bottles of water and was able to put them in my pockets. You need your hands free so a small backpack is helpful. I think it was 36 markers to the top (#31-34 are really close together) - we wanted to quit after #29 or #30 so glad we kept going. We hiked in tennis shoes just because we did not have enough space in our luggage for hiking boots but they would certainly have been nice for the trip down. Trails were completely clean - nice job everyone picking up after themselves!

Incredible Views !

By Brutus |

This is one of the more difficult hikes in the Valley and please be sure you have water, are hydrated, and in shape before attempting. This is not one to tackle on a 100 degree day in the afternoon. There can be rattlesnakes, and it's busy so parking can be difficult. It is worthwhile and is something you can tell friends about after.

Awesome hike & views

By Lindsay M |

Love hiking Camelback. It's a must-do if you're staying in the area. It's a bit of a challenge, but the views and satisfaction of getting to the top are more than worth it! I've done the Echo Canyon trail twice. This past time was in early September. We hiked very early to beat the heat and see the sunrise. If you're wanting to hike during the hot months, I really recommend getting an early start. I just brought lots of water and made sure to take my time, taking breaks when I needed them. I'm not an experienced hiker by any means, and I did just fine. The parking lot gets crowded quick, so if you're driving, just be aware you may need to park elsewhere and Uber/Lyft in. All in all, it's a great experience I can't recommend enough.

Very challenging and very fun

By Kyle N |

This was spectacularly fun couple of hours. The trail is unlike anything I've been on, with boulders, slabs, stairs and railings. It was a great workout with stunning views. Great fun all the way up and back down. Heed the warnings: good shoes, lots of water, take your time.

Do NOT underestimate

By Shauna S |

I've been telling everyone this is the closest I'm coming to "Free Solo." This is a rocky hiking trail up to the helicopter pad. Then it turns into free solo rock climbing. It was way more difficult than anticipated, and I am physically fit for a 50 year old. My 18 year old son was fine, but still... I wish we would have read more about it, to be more prepared. Between 2 of us, we brought 3 regular bottles of water. NOT ENOUGH! We each should have had 3 bottles on our own, or more. We had a big breakfast before the hike. STILL BRING A HEARTY SNACK. This "hike" is deceiving because it is so accessible and so many have done it, but it is tough! And we had to walk a mile to get to the beginning of Cholla Trail (no parking), so factor that in. I rated it high, because it is beautiful and you feel a sense of accomplishment, but do not underestimate the challenge. And wear good gripping shoes!

One of my first hikes when I moved to the valley!

By Deborah P |

This is one of those I got to go destinations when you go to the valley! Not necessarily an easy hike and often crowded! You need good shoes and plenty of water no matter what kind of shape you’re in! Many good hikers get in trouble because they’re not prepared! Views are incredible!

The climb is doable for anyone who is reasonably fit —:that means you like to hike and work out regularly — and the views at the top are exceptional.

By Kerry A |

There are 2 hiking options - Echo Canyon (west side) & the Cholla Trail (east side). Both are very intense hikes so take lots of water & go early, esp. in the warmer months. Great views!

Started shortly after sunrise on the Echo Trail. Cool temps, busy trail. Strenuous hike with rewarding views. Take water, a 2litre Camelback bladder was more than enough for me.

Fabulous!

By katied326 |

Front desk check-in fabulous, made me feel right away very comfortable. I loved my massage in the spa and will be back! My only disappointment was to see tennis courts turned into pickelball, shocked for a resort with a known tennis program to do this.

Great workout - leave early!

By mmorg29 |

Excellent challenging hike with great payoff at the summit. Wear good shoes; leave early. Trail gets crowded quickly.

Whatttttt?!!!!!!!!!

Me and my son hiked to the top and had a great view of Phoenix from up top. It wasn't a bad climb but do watch out for scorpions!

The north side in the early morning before sunrise

By caddisfly3141 |

Lemurians? No! Those live on Mt Shasta in Northern California. If so, what are the lights moving around the north side in the early morning darkness?
If you can position yourself near the Barry Goldwater park north oh Camelback and you’re lucky you can see many lights moving across the face of the mountain. I wish they were Lemurians but they probably are just the headlamps of good hikers going up the hill to watch the sunrise; however........

Challenging, but Worth It

By dragonflyjenny |

This is a very physical hike/climb but worth every step. Don't be intimidated by the more agile or in shape people who are climbing next to you. We say a large range of ages, shapes and sizes climbing the mountain. Best advise is to dress appropriately, good shoes, plenty of water and go at your own pace. It is worth the view and the sense of achievement in the end.

Good Workout With a View

By RRH01 |

This is a very busy hiking location. You need to go early to get a parking spot and so you can keep moving while on your hike. There are always people there that shouldn’t be there. This is somewhat strenuous and some people should be on a flat trail walk somewhere else. I was always told that people going up have the right of way, it would be nice if this was posted. There are signs to remind people to use their headphones (amazing how many people can’t read). Fun hike.

Great place for hiking/views

By BrandonLakeThorpe |

This is a great hike. Both sides of the ascent are about. 2.4 mile round trip. The Echo Canyon Trail is A more difficult hike which features a lot of rock scrambling and steeper grade. The Cholla side is still moderately challenging. Both sides can get busy on the weekend. Pack plenty of water-there is minimal shade

Very difficult but worth the 360° view!

By annika |

Stunning view but only for experienced hikers! We were very excited to climb camelback mountain but soon realized that the hike is extremely difficult. Not all sources online really say, that you do need some kind of experience and you should be in good shape in order to successfully climb the mountain. We saw many people on the side of the trail having heat strokes or just heat exhaustion, because many of them underestimated the hike. It is extremely steep and it’s more climbing than hiking.
The parking situation is very frustrating. Not enough parking opportunities for all the people visiting. We ended up parking at the Marriotts Resort parking lot and walked 15 min to the trailhead.

Phoenix Icon that will challenge any one that likes to hike

By pepperwilliams |

You can’t think Phoenix without thinking Camelback Mountain. It defines the valley in so many ways. The hike is not for someone wanting a leisurely stroll. Both route to the top are challenging for the average person but well worth the effort and experience.

Loved the views and loved the challenge

By Kathie B |

Made up both sides twice and saw an amazing sunset on the way back down! Both trails had their own challenges but people we very friendly and happy to help one another over tough spots. It was a great personal challenge for me and I cannot wait to go back!

Mid Morning Hike

By Nicole M |

We (my husband and I) hiked the Echo Canyon trail and it was a lot of fun! The views were beautiful and the trail was easy to follow. However, get there early if you want to get parking :) also, make sure to bring a lot of water!

Good views

By WVHighlander |

Parking is practically non-existent, but the views are excellent and good day hiking. Be prepared for a lot of other people. Choose somewhere else if you want solitude.

Excellent hike. Bring water

By CarissaR |

We hiked echo canyon on camelback with a group of 7 of us, including 2 children under 12 and 2 seniors in their 60’s. Everyone was able to do at least part of the hike but only 3 of our group (ages 9, 29, and 62) made it to the very top. The bathrooms at the bottom are the only bathrooms and the water fountain at the bottom is the only water so use both before you head up. The bathrooms are disgusting but too be expected from public washrooms in this type of setting I suppose. The water from the fountain wasn’t great either so I suggest bringing lots of your own. Wear good shoes as there is a lot of loose rocks that do make the trail rather slippery in places. The views of the city from the top are excellent but even if you only make it part way up the canyon you will see a lot of natural beauty. Bobby’s loop is a nice simpler hike for those who want a bit of a challenge but don’t want to go up the mountain too far.

Tough Hike

By Kem B |

We took the Cholla route up from the Phoenician Hotel. It is a great hike but demanding. You can do it in running/tennis shoes, but I'd recommend hiking boots/shoes. The footing is tricky & you need to be careful going up & down frequently. We made it to the helipad, which took about 1.25 hours & we had to return back down b/c we ran out of time. We were told that it would take another 15 to 20 minutes to complete the trail to the top AND that it is more demanding. So, it is a solid 3hrs to get to the top & back from the hotel. I would recommend this hike!

2 Hikes same mountain

By GET_TRAVELING247 |

Ok we hiked Cholla to the top, the other side is Echo Trail ends up at same location. You can hike up one and down the other. Both hikes are very challenging due to the last quarter of the hike, where it requires rock climbing basically. It takes a good 2 hours or more depending on if you’re going to the top or stopping a lot for the view. If you want to hike 1/2 of it or 3/4 (marker 25) and come back down- you will get a good hike in- still close to 2 hours. This is a very popular destination and will be super crowded -we had to wait behind people to pass and vice versa. The rule is water, sunscreen good shoes! Once u drink 1/2 your water start coming back down. Beautiful views. Fun lizards. Parking at Echo Trail head is very limited and there is no parking lot at Cholla trail head, you have to park on N Invergorden rd that is perpendicular to the cholla ln you need to walk on to get to trail, it will be a walk just to get to the trail head- about 1/4 of a mile to 3/4 of a mile but there is much more parking!

Rock climb

By Erinoutthere |

This hike is very intense. Its more like climbing over rocks up a mountain. I am from Minneaota so I’d never been on any kind of hike like this before! It was fun and quite the adventure though! I went on a nice weekday afternoon and could not find parking at the Cholla trailhead so went to Echo. I saw some kids doing this hike and they seemed okay, but this hike is definitely not for all!

Great climb

By BrianM |

Not so much of a hike as it is a climb! And what a climb! Not quite as challenging as Hunters Trail at Picacho Peak but still a fantastic route.
Parking is an issue. It's quite limited so beware and have a backup plan.

Camelback Experience

By Kristina W |

Attended a week-long training camp with my university rowing program. We spent our last day hiking up Camelback Mountain. The hike had great views but we were expecting something a little more difficult. On the guide that we read ahead of time, it listed the completion time as 3-4 hours and it took our group an hour and a half. Overall, it was a great experience and would highly recommend for a group or as an individual going for a workout with views.

Beautiful view of the valley

By Destination268437 |

My husband and I hiked up the mountain and enjoyed the beautiful view of the valley. I was not able to go to the top but my husband did! He loved it. It was amazing to see how many airplanes were flying overhead. Some felt like they were pretty close!! There were quite a few people hiking that day as the weather was perfect. We also enjoyed seeing all the fun shapes of the cactus on the mountain.

Spectacular views

By Rita S |

The views on these mountain trails are absolutely breathtaking, but the climb itself is a tough one! If you are planning on climbing (especially during extreme temperatures) make sure you are prepared with plenty of water, sunscreen, good hiking shoes, and a light snack. The trip down is just as rigorous as the climb up! We took several breaks so we could enjoy the spectacular views and took a lot of photos! It was definitely a great and exhausting experience!

Great view

Loved this mountain view.had a great time spent. bring a cameras. Walking shoes.had a great time.....

very famos Mountains just north of phoenix - nice view - good area around - climbing possible for a short walk

I did it!!

By Awesomely Aimless Adventuring America |

Slow and steady wins the race unless you are a CB pro! I'm a Capricorn therefore, able to navigate the rocks like a goat. Look and listen. Get hiking boots and notice.

Difficult Hike/Crawl to the Top

By Kennon R |

I completed this in early March with the assistance of a local Airbnb tour guide. It was very much well worth the visit and the time spent. The 1700' foot ascension to the top is difficult (the Echo Canyon trail is rated as a double black diamond). There were several sections that were pretty intimidating, especially the hand rail section. It is essentially a crawl to the top.

Be careful and stick to the trail and you'll be fine. I am not in the best shape. Our group completed the round-trip hike in about 3 hours. Also - even if it is mild for Phoenix (50-70 degrees) BRING MORE WATER THAN YOU THINK YOU WILL NEED!

Overall, fun experience. Highly recommend.

Good Hard

By Brandon K |

Great challenging hike with a nice view! Parking was a little confusing you can’t just map it. My gf found a random Google page explaining where to park. There’s 2 paths up 1 is from a parking lot that’s gonna be full and the other is along a street easily accessible

This hike is not for the inexperienced!

By Patricia S |

This is a worn trail therefore there is a lot of slippery rock. If you don’t have hiking shoes it will be slippery and coming down is where you will slide. I hike it often and see so many people struggling because they don’t have the proper shoes. It’s crowded during peak times and limited parking. I recommend hiking the Echo Canyon side versus the Cholla Lane trailhead. The Cholla Lane has no toilets, no water fountains and no parking. It’s a good walk to just get to the trail where at Echo Canyon, they have parking and toilets.

OMG I’m getting old but I loved every step!

By Tim |

Left Canyon Suites at 4am and began my journey. Met a gentleman named Rich S. about 1/3 of the way up. He had done the climb before so I got in line. We reached the summit well before sunrise and met another group of regulars. Awesome and friendly people. So glad to have met them. The views at sunrise were breathtaking. It was worth every bead of sweat and the sore glutes! LOL. If your adventurous and like a challenge, go for it. It’s not too bad, just take your time, savor every moment.

A rewarding experience

By Susanne T |

I am not an experienced hiker, but whenever I come to Phoenix, my friend who is one indulges me by taking me to some great spots. None were as challenging as Camelback Echo Trail. There were a lot of people climbing, and the terrain requires use of hands in many places (although I saw a lot of people running up and down - I don't know how they did it!). You need good shoes for sure. I am in my third act of life, but reasonably fit and I didn't find it too difficult (but I was pretty achy the next day). Worth doing.

Lesson Learned

By Twconsulting |

What a wonderful hike!! May I suggest that you go down the same way you went up. We made the mistake of continuing on down, and ended up on the other side of the mountain, no where near our hotel (the Phoenecian). Also, recommend getting a very early start (sunrise) as 1) it gets very busy on the trails and 2) it gets hot!!! bring water!!! And this goes without saying, leave with whatever you come in with (garbage)

Great hike.

By Chris L |

Parked in the Echo Canyon trailhead area. Beautiful hike, but can get quite strenuous. Bring water. Those who make it to the top are rewarded with incredible, clear views.

Breathtaking

By sandra7908 |

This was an intermediate hike, make sure you are dress properly We were so lucky to have great weather . Light weight sweater and hiking boots. Tennis shoes would make the rocks slippery . It takes close to 2 hours round trip at a good pace and taking pictures on the the way up. The view up top is spectacular. I will try to go every time I visit Arizona.

Really more of a rock climb!

By Terrie G |

The view is breathtaking but this is really more of a rock climb than a hike. You need to have good hiking shoes as you navigate up over the rocks. Make sure you take plenty of water and are in very good shape. The path is not clearly marked at times and you have to find your way over the rocks.

Gorgeous hike and phenomenal views!!

By SassyTraveller213 |

My husband and I are not avid hikers as we live in an area that has no mountains, but we took the challenge and the double black diamond Cholla Trail. It was an amazing hike and so worth the view from the top! Though it was a tough trail, we were so glad we did it!

Adventure hiking

By AREIowa |

This was my favorite hike of Scottsdale/Phoenix. I love adventure and this definitely pushed me. There are two main routes - Cholla and Echo canyon. Echo Canyon was closed while we were there. We did Cholla which is considered the “back” more challenging and slightly longer trail. Double black diamond trail. The first 2/3’s of the hike is moderate with include and loose rocks. The last 1/3 is very difficult bouldering (climbing over rocks with minimal true trail) that should be done by “experienced” hikers. My husband stopped 2/3 of the way up as he is not a fan of heights. I continued to go on by myself. While I am in my upper 40’s my family considers me an adrenaline junkie. I even considered turning back at a couple of points since I was by myself. I was an invigorating accomplishment and I recommend to anyone who has experience hiking. For the final third after the helicopter pad (for rescuing people) follow the blue reflectors to make sure that you are on the correct path. Wear rip stop pants as you may need to “scoot down on your butt” in some areas to make it down safely where athletic pants may get damage.

This was our third time climbing Camelback. Very enjoyable each time.

By vixxdog |

We love exciting challenges when it comes to hiking. Camelback is challenging. It is rated as a double black diamond hike. I would agree with that. Thighmaster would be the term that comes to mind. The views at the top are nice, but not spectacular. The climb is what's awesome.

A real challenge but conveniently located

By benl |

I passed this park entrance several times while on business. One day with time to spare I popped in and started this hike to the first overlook. That's fine in a suit. More than that required a return trip in proper clothes and a lot of water. The summit was worth the treck but this was tough. There are some steep parts requiring a little crawling as you ascend and some sliding on your butt when coming down. There are a significant number of places with handle rails for help.

Really easy to get to if you are in Phoenix/Scottsdale. Worth the full day or even an hour to the first overlook.

Hiking with a new knee!!

By Prego51 |

I made it to the top with my 4-month-old knee. Although strenuous, it was well worth it!! Looking forward to my next trip up!!

The iconic Phx mountain

By 2BEis2SKI |

A must visit but some difficult hiking if you're not in decent shape. You need to read up and know what you're getting into. The Echo Canyon side in particular is pretty steep in places

But, the landscape, area and views are amazing.

Tough but beautiful!

By medicsLondon |

We had no idea this hike was so tough and glad we didn’t. It is a beautiful hike and then the last third is scrambling up steep rocks.
However it was well worth it for the amazing views.
Take plenty of water and wear decent hiking shoes. If you are reasonably fit and not scared of heights then it is a lovely experience.

Very nice views.

By Knightline |

Had a nice 'walk' to top of Camelback Mountain. The McDonald Dr parking lot gets full early - but it's worth it. This is a vigorous hike - not a beginner hike at all. But beautiful views abound.

Great Hike

By Adi C |

Probably the best hike in Phoenix. It's easy but not that easy if you haven't hiked before. Gets pretty rough near the top. However if you make it the top the view is amazing.

One of favorite hikes ever!

By Bill |

My daughter and I hiked to the top last week while on vacation. It was a challenging hike (esp since we didn't bring proper footwear) but we made it to the top. I'll def do it again the next time I'm in Phoenix.

Dangerous mask mandate

By Rbharvey |

The day I went it was full sun and 90+ degrees. The entire tour is OUTSIDE. It was awful to see elderly people and children having to wear a mask in those conditions. It was difficult for me to breath in the mask and I’m healthy. The mask made it feel hotter than it actually was. It was hard to enjoy the gardens, I was miserable the entire time.
I did take my mask off to get some good breaths and drink water and an employee told me to put it back on.
I will not return, it was completely unreasonable to require a mask after AZ had removed the mask mandate and the activity is 100% outdoors.

Amazing- worth the effort!

By W6Raven |

Did this hike at 5am to avoid the crowds and see the sunrise. It was very challenging- wear proper shoes and bring headlamps if you are going up early. I was not expecting the amount of boulder climbing but it was an awesome experience and so glad I did it. Crazy to see people sprinting past me on the way up!

For the outdoor enthusiast...

By TLeeB |

My 23 year old daughter and I (48) hiked Cholla trail mid morning today. (The hardest part was the ride there with a lyft driver who didn’t quite know where he was going and we ended up on a detour with some pretty spectacular homes.) We both wore our chacos which worked just as well as they did in Hawaii. If you are fit and prepared with water, you will love the adventure and the gorgeous views! Was great way to spend a mother / daughter day!

Great hike

By vegasrugbyref |

So it is the beginning of rattlesnake season so be careful on any hike. Been up this trail several times over the years offering good views. Take water and snacks. Fairly busy on weekends and less so during the week. Regular hikers usually on trail who are friendly.

Very Strenuous but Awesome Experience

By TravelingSoccerLoon |

Hiked to the top of Camelback from the Echo Canyon Trailhead. Awesome experience. Most difficult "hike" I've done. Actually a 1.3 mile rock scramble to the top. Very strenuous ascent and perilous descent trying to avoid any fall. 2 hours up and back. Great views throughout and spectacular at the top. Arrived just before sunrise and parking lot was already filling. Lots of people on the trail which is the only downside.

Annual hike up Camelback

By WiTravelFam |

We hike to the top from echo canyon every year on our annual vacation to Phoenix from Wisconsin. Each hike is a lot of fun, the trail is busy, parking is difficult, might be a good idea to uber to the trailhead. Has to be the friendliest group of hikers in the trail, wear a t-shirt with your favorite travel destination or sports team and you will have numerous conversations with others. The hike is tough, most of it is more bouldering than hiking but take it slow and you'll make it. The view from the top is amazing!

Up & Down

By thomas b |

Sure it's only 1.25 miles but you must be in good shape to do it. Unless you don't mind taking your time. Best bet hiking boots AND not tennis shoes. More grip & safe

Steep, Boulder-ridden Hike UP for 1-mile

By Rich G |

Came after work for a hike up the Camelback mountain trail. Beautiful trail in Phoenix, but not a hike for the faint of heart. Going up is, well, strenuous, but doable with breaks. The first quarter mile is just a trail, but somewhat steep and lots of walking. After that, it goes even steeper and more of bouldering than hiking. The trail itself is really just mostly uphill climbing boulders, watching your footing and waiting for the next landing area. It's about a mile up and takes a good 40 minutes one way. Going down is somewhat harder (not physically harder, as you won't be out of breathe like you were going up), but harder in a sense you have to be careful with each step and not slip and get hurt. Beautiful views, and can get hot. Bring water. Make sure you're down before they close the park (at sunset) or they may charge you a ticket which is about $115 per person! We got down just before sunset and thankfully didn't have to talk ourselves out of a ticket, but I hear they sometimes do charge people.

Climb Camelback!

By kdev |

I'm not an experienced outdoors person but I love hiking and participating in outdoor activities. Coming from VA I've hiked miles of the Appalachian but Camelback is NOTHING like eastcoast hiking. The first time I hiked Camelback I didn't make it to the top but the second time I did and considered it a true accomplishment. Indeed, as others noted, the parking is a challenge and the hike is even more of a challenge. Just come prepared with patience, plenty of water and a camera, for the views are spectacular. It took me about an hour and a half to climb and return to the car. If you're coming from closeby, I'd recommend taking an uber or lyft so as to avoid having to park.

Worth the climb

By Timsusan28 |

We have never hiked like this before but we would definitely do it again. It’s not for the faint of heart or the athletically challenged. The view is gorgeous. The hike is a good workout and you can turn back at any time. It’s a popular place so you won’t be alone. Don’t forget water, sunscreen and a camera!

best hike in arizona

This is not you beginners hike, but by far one of the best hikes we have done. Up one side of the mountain down the other, the views are spectacular.

By MovingTarget RV |

Great hike! Beautiful views. Top portion is difficult and not for those who are not ready to hand over hand. Not crazy but difficult rating is good.

Moderate hike with bit of slope.

By Reza J |

Need water and proper shoes. Enjoy the landscape view and Arizona plants and vegetation.. Early morning walk probably recommend during warmer seasons.

Trail 8A

A perfect trail for a relative rookie at hiking. We managed in regular tennis shoes, but now have the bug & might have to invest in some real hiking shoes the next time we visit AZ!

Great Hiking and Fantastic Sunsets

By Snoopy2758 |

Recommended by a local, we hiked about one third of the way up the trails to watch a gorgeous sunset. Trails were reasonable for a couple of duffers in our 60's. Only issue is that the park closes immediately after sunset, so no lingering to enjoy the afterglow once the sun is down.

Challenging hike but so rewarding

By Beth S |

Going into this hike I had read all of the reviews on here and I was pretty nervous. My daughter and I run (marathons for me! 56 to be exact) and my husband and son are in decent shape. My son is a Division 1 footall player but he's also 6'7" and 300 lbs so i just wasn't sure the "bouldering" part of this was for all of us.
I'll start by saying that we woke up at 3:30 a.m. for our 6:00 a.m. flight from Minneapolis. We landed in Phoenix at 9:00 a.m. and hit the ground running. Our VRBO wasn't available until later and we planned to drive out of town the next two days so it was now or never if we wanted to do Camelback. I had just told my family that there was "some bouldering" and that the last bit might be tough. Here's the rundown of how our climb went:

First of all.....parking. We actually found a spot in the lower lot on the Echo side and when we walked up to the trailhead we noticed a few spots in the upper lot as well. I attribute this to the time of year because those spots at 10:00 am on a busy day would definitely have been gone. We changed into shorts and t-shirts (it was a beautiful 65 degree sunny day) and brought two backpacks filled with our hydroflasks and additional water along with granola bars and our phones. We all wore regular running shoes and they were totally fine for this hike. Immediately the trail goes up and gets your heart-rate going. I would say cardiovascular-wise this hike definitely is challenging. I got a little nervous when I was out of breath so quickly but you soon realize that this is the nature of the beast. There are plenty of places to rest and catch your breath and we didn't feel rushed. I can see how a busy day may be stressful but we were able to easily pass people or let people pass us if we needed to. The "bouldering" people talk about consists of big steps up and finding a path that's suited for you and your stride. My son has longer legs and was able to easily find his footing. The rest of us couldn't necessarily follow his lead. It was fun to try to find ways to keep going up. There are parts of the trail that have a railing which was nice to hold onto and wonderful on the way down when it was steep. My husband saw a cactus way up high at one point and declared, "I think I see the top!" We still laugh about it because that was maybe a little over half way. There are posts on the trail that I only noticed later. (Because my head was down as I was looking for places to put my feet) The posts say "1/8, 2/8, 3/8..." etc so you kind of know where you are. It was exhilarating to finally get to the top. Also.......65 degree day felt like 80 and we were all pretty sweaty at the top. So I can definitely see how temps hotter than that could be problematic without enough water. We drank almost every drop of water we brought and I thought we had definitely overpacked.
As others have said in their reviews, you will see people running up and down the hill. We saw two guys who said they were training for something (the apocolypse maybe? I don't think they said) and they ran up and down 3 times while we were there. It took us over an hour to reach the top and then we enjoyed a snack and ran into our neighbors (yep! They live right across the street from us in MN) and took our time recovering before we descended.
Overall, the hike was SO worth it and we enjoyed every last second. Every once in awhile the rest of the trip my husband would say, "The cactus wasn't the top was it?" and we'd all laugh. It's kind of our inside joke now.

Spectacular!

By patricia m |

The views are amazing!! Great bathrooms and water fountains available. We did the easier loop to start and it was beautiful but we weren't challenged. We'll be back to hike to the top on our next trip but plenty of people, of all ages made it up and back while we were there. Great location.

Where do all these people come from

By avasmimi |

Back when we were kids we used to climb the praying monk on Christmas, hike and climb.. Now we have stupid people needing to be rescued by helicopter every day. Too busy

It ain't easy, but it's doable...

By Roy M |

Don't be frightened by some of the doom and gloom reviews...it is not for everyone, but if you're in shape and have proper shoes, etc. it is a fairly simple climb (not hike!). Just take your time and enjoy the view.

Echo canyon

By Kristen A |

Definitely not a hike for a novice. A lot of scrambling, but very beautiful. I saw a decent amount of smaller children, but I'm not sure I would have brought my own. Worth the hike! No dogs allowed.

A good boulder hike

By williamrE6870OT |

We finally hiked the Camelback. Ensure that you have plenty of water for this hike. While it is a relatively short hike, the steepness on the last 1/2 of the trail made it a great one to hike. We hiked the echo canyon trail and found that there was plenty of parking at the trail entrance. Restrooms and a water station at the trail head, as well as a park ranger to ensure that we were prepared for the challenge. Ensure that you have good hiking shoes. Great views of the area from the summit. Recommend this as an option for those seeking a challenge.

Hot hike in the desert

By araxas |

On a recent trip to Scottsdale we decided to hike one of the many tails to the crest of Camelback. An awesome hike that provided a great view of the Phoenix-Scottsdale area. Go early in the morning to avoid the heat and bring plenty of water!

Fear of Heights Hesitant - Did it!

By KPV8 |

I was very skeptical for two reasons: I am significantly afraid of heights and have never rock climbed. We read reviews to see if it was manageable for people who are physically active and in good health. We kept seeing reviews write about “rock shuffling.” We tried to YouTube what that meant and Google it. Two of us were skeptical and a little frightened after seeing, “double black diamonds” and some people say it’s very advanced.
Well, we did it and loved it.

In my opinion, rock shuffling is being able to navigate where to step next on large boulders almost the entire time. Tons of steps and if you can do a box step while exercising, that’s the highest step I encountered on the trail.

On the way down, your arms and shoulders get some work holding the handrails to navigate where to step.

The only thing that scared me the entire time related to heights was at the very top - but only on one side of the summit. It’s big enough that you don’t have to go near it. There are no hard/fast drop offs or ledges on one side and the views are amazing. Everything is a gradual slope. Don’t get me wrong, if you fell you could seriously get hurt or die. I’m just talking about the fear of a drop off.

Someone recommended we bring 4 bottles of water each. You’ll need BOTH of your hands to do this. We had a cheap adidas string backpack to put keys and water in.

Saw a couple folks carrying a Nalgene bottle or plastic water bottle without having use of both hands, bad idea.

Also saw at least five people in sandals. This is not a Teva hike. Need decent tennis shoes. This trail is busy with people passing on way up and way down frequently on a weekend. It was cool and 50’s when we went. If the weather was in the 80’s or above this review may be different. No critters come out in the colder weather so it was not a worry.

I think it took us about three hours, but we were focused on seeing views and just enjoying it.

A mom carrying an 11-month-old in a carrier did it, a man in his seventies does it TWICE a day. Several people run it…..

I hope this helps make your decision. I’ll add some photos.

Hope you enjoy it! The way down take 1/3 of the time!! Happy hiking!!

You can do this! Pack lots of water.

By Thomas Anderson |

Views from the top are great. You can see planes landing at Phoenix International Airport and they line up almost at the same height as the mountain. Trail is great - wear a tight backpack because there are some rocks to scramble over. Nothing technical, and some people get concerned, but it really isn't too bad. Be careful, take your time, and drink water frequently. Make sure you save water for return trip too.

Really fun but be ready

By Docbobandy |

My wife (49) and I (59) climbed to the top of Camelback via the Echo Canyon trail last week - quite the adventure! You must be in reasonably good shape with no significant leg or back issues. Just when you think you're close to the top - more to go. Descent actually seemed a bit trickier than ascent. Figure 1-1.5 hours up and
~1 hour down if you go at a slow steady pace. 30 min at the top to relax and take in the breathtaking scenery should do it. I would NOT attempt this climb if it is wet, quite hot (100 or higher?), you suffer any acrophobia or you cannot carry plenty of water. You need your hands free so bring a backpack for snacks, water, sunscreen. There are no garbage cans or bathrooms along the way. Wear comfortable, supportive and non-slip shoes AND a pair of non-slip gloves that can help you grab on to rocks. Arrive very early on weekends - parking is limited. Trail can become very crowded. If you have any doubts about you abilities, take the easier trail!

Amazing hike

By Scott E |

Parking is a challenge. I had a friend drop me off on the Cholla side and pick me up on the Echo side later. I would definitely start on the Cholla side as it is a little less challenging than going up Echo but still very challenging with steep climbs and rock climbing in parts. I would recommend doing both sides with either friends or using Uber to get and from. You don’t want to have to park 3/4 mile away from the entrance and use your energy. The 360 views on top are spectacular!! Well worth the adventure. Getting down is slow and methodical (at least for me). Great hike but go early as it gets crowded the later you go.

Such An Arizona Hiking Destination.

By Conny Wylie |

Camelback Mountain, ( 2700 ft.), is a perfect tourist activity in Phoenix as it is a relatively short jaunt with pleasurable views. On the base of the mountain at 6 A. M., half asleep, armed with trial mix, water, coffee and climbing boots, I opted for the Echo Trail. It was challenging .......like tackling a stair-master and I was soon sweating like mad. I spotted prickly pear cacti along the mountain side and as I forged up, I heard the rattle of a diamond back. I remained quiet for a while and edged down the slope to circumvent the reptile and continue on my way up. Over an hour from embarkation I reached the top and extended my arms in a 'Jesus on the cross' figure to enjoy the balminess of the wind. Coming down seemed a breeze. Camelback Mountain is such an Arizona hiking destination.

Cholla trail amazing view note: no washrooms

By Family204 |

The hike is 1 hour 40 minutes up and view is amazing. Take lots of water two bottles each. Note The trail head enters through a very high end neighbourhood. No public parking except on side of road next to golf course. City should expropriate a corner of the old hole on the golf course and have a shelter and public washroom built....lots of kids peeing on side of trail. First time we have experienced a major tourist attraction without any amenities in the USA. Take your time and enjoy the beautiful trail and views.

Trail is amazing!

Great hike in the middle of the city

By mjmorris315 |

Camelback is a fabulous hike, definitely not for someone who is completely out of shape as it gets pretty steep and is strenuous. But great bang for your buck in terms of length , views and proximity to the city. Normally it is very busy but worth it. Sunrise hike is definitely the best

Great way to spend a morning

By jyanchek |

Took a hike here this past Saturday and it was a great morning. It was a moderate hike that offered great views of the city. Nice to get out of the city and get some sun and fresh air!

Hit the backside

By Eric L |

I did Echo Canyon Trail 2 or 3 years ago and now I finally got to the Cholla trail on the backside. Loose gravel at the bottom and steep rock climbing at the peak. Great hike...

Very difficult and challenging hike; be prepared and enjoy the reward at the top!

By sdk18 |

Your will need hiking boots, tennis shoes are too soft, take plenty of water and a snack and be prepared to boulder your way to the top. It was the most difficult hike I have ever taken but I am glad I did it.

Amazing view

By Happy T |

Start early before sun gets to high! Bring at least 1.5 L of fluid. This is not for unfit people. Literally an uphill rock climb most of the mtn. Wouldn't attempt it as my first mtn. For those who are accustomed to hiking and rough rocky terrain..its worth every step!! Views are amazing at the summit. If you can make it for sunrise..it is breathtaking!!

Not for the beginner or inactive!

By SmartBlonde |

Love this hike. We do the Cholla trail. It's a great incline, close to 2 miles to the top. The 2nd half is much more like some light rock climbing than hiking a trail though, so be prepared to scrabble a bit. Great challenging hike on the way up, beautiful views of the city in all directions. The way back down takes less time :) but going back down over those rocks requires either great balance and shoe traction or going butt down in some spots!

I would not recommend this hike for a first-time hiker, nor someone who hasn't been keeping up on their workouts. I know everyone says it, but bring WATER, people! I see way too many people who are clearly not only not ready for this hike, but also come without any hydration. This is the desert, respect it.

Last tip - the earlier the better. It's highly trafficked, even in the summer. If you can get there before 5:30 am you'll have a better shot at parking. It's extremely limited, but eases up during the summer heat a bit.

Perfect day for hike!

By RknRon |

If you like hiking, this is an ideal place to be. The area to park your car is a few block walk to the base of Camelback and from the bottom you see a double black diamond hiking guide symbol. It is only that after marker 23. Excellent hike and the views alone are worth it!!!

Take a hike!

By JColaiacovo |

While my wife and I stayed at The Phoenician in Scottsdale, we were amazed by the beauty of the Camelback Mt. in the backdrop. Everyone talked about hiking the Cholla & Echo trails, so we decided to make it a bucket list thing! We didn’t have real hiking shoes (I had Nike Air Max) but it is still very possible to make the hike. If you have hiking shoes definitely wear those instead!! We left for our hike at 6:00am and it took us 2.5 hours to make it to the top and back down. A few words of advice: go early, bring about 2-3 bottles of water per person, wear sunscreen, follow the trail & when you don’t see trail follow the blue spray painted dots on the rock. There will be parts when you will have to climb...legit getting down on your hands and climbing rocks! Don’t let the size of the mountain intimidate you! It’s totally do-able! Also, we didn’t see any snakes or creatures during our hike. It’s certainly a possibility, but it’s not crawling with desert reptiles! Have fun and enjoy the beautiful scenery! Bring your phone to take some great pictures from the top!

Easy hike, great views!

By happytrailsnyc |

We hiked up on New Year's Day. The air was clear and you could see quite far once you reach the top. Bring water and a snack so you can take a break at one of the spots where the view is worth stopping for.

Stunning Vista

By Surfpinky |

This mountain towers over the Scottsdale vicinity. It’s a fantastic landmark and beautiful to behold. Locals and visitors hike the slopes. Be warned that it is more forbidding than expected and prepare accordingly with water and time of departure before you attempt to hike. I’m the one just taking in the amazing view.

Difficult climb to the top, but the views are worth it

By Luke H |

Beautiful views of Phoenix and the valley! I took the cholla trail right before sunrise, and it was gorgeous all the way up.

This hiking trail is very challenging, with the first half being a very steep incline and the latter forcing you to maneuver through the rocky terrain.

Definitely wear stable shoes and it would be wise to bring a buddy if you are a novice hiker. I was hear for a work trip and went solo in my old tennis shoes for working out, there were a few times I lost my footing and almost fell

2nd time hike and love it! Takes a fit person about 2 hrs roundtrip.

By lcjn12 |

I'm an athletic 40-ish year old woman. Both times in Apr/May I was very happy to arrive no later than 6:30 am for both the heat and crowd factor. I wear sneakers, a visor/sunglasses, a portable water pack (0.8L camelbak) and SPF. I do not need a snack. It is completely doable taking about 1 hour up to summit and 50 min descent. I am thankful reading others' tips and wear cheapie $1 rubber gardening gloves for bouldering up/down.

Hiking - Climbing - Sighting

By NikkiEsan |

Beautiful, but can be treacherous hiking/climbing experience. LOVED every single moment of it. So many beautiful views of Scottsdale. Went with my hubby, and 6 year old. Only recommend it with kids that are very good at listening and know that you can't just run around everywhere.

Great Challenge

By alexisbw612 |

This is a great challenge for an inexperienced hiker. There is a steep incline to the top where you are surrounded by stellar desert views. Be carful on the retreat back down because of loose gravel. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen!

Great hiking venue on a clear day

By truetray |

I last walked this mountain on a cool clear day with minimal wind. Despite a moderate 60 ish temprature, the dry desert air will parch you if you do not have enough water.

Great Hike

By R C |

My second time hiking. It is not simple, a bit strenuous. You meet all kinds of nice people on the trails, some keeping to themselves, some moving fast, some slow.
The last part is very steep, and many people only go 3/4 and don't do the last climb.
As someone said to me about the last part, it is difficult coming down.
Having turned 65 and loving playing tennis, i decided against doing the last part, didn't want to risk an injury to my tennis game.

Great Views

By TravelMacks |

The hike up to the top of Camelback mountain is a pretty easy climb for most of it, but there are places where it’s challenging. Worth it for the view at the top. Great exercise

A reasonable hike

By MikeCo55 |

Camelback was right behind your hotel and we were able to hike halfway up from our side and the walked around the base. I believe you can reach the top from the other side

A Sight to Behold

By JimnKimAdvisor |

I was there from the time I was a teenager - and it is such a beloved sight to behold. If you are in the Phoenix area and have a few extra hours, it is DEFINITELY worth the drive. Stay hydrated, my friends!

A climb for all levels- a place of reflection and inspiration

By rayray09 |

You can start your ascent on the east or west side of the mountain: I suggest the"other" side or the Cholla Trail. I find most hikers have their head down concentrating on the trail, which can be challenging is some areas; if you find yourself in this situation- stop, step off the trail a bit and take in all the natural beauty. Be in the now, your heart will sing!

Very hard to get to

By RaptorSam |

Parking lot is always full and you will end parked on the roundabout and delay to other confused drivers

Great hike

By Travel Agent D. Hanna |

Loved the hike but there were a few people where we were walking. Other than that our trail was clean and we had a nice time.

Camelback Mountain Hike

By CJSToronto |

There are a few different areas to hike and some are not very difficult. Very well-maintained parking areas and maps are located at the start of each trail.

Lovely for hiking/walks and views

By SunnyandBuster |

In the flat world of Phoenix Camelback Mountain offers some nice locations for walking and hiking. There are options for all abilities and if you head out at the right time you can catch a beautiful sunset. (Be sure you carry enough water during the warm weather)

Very fun hike

By wmncville |

Coming from the East Coast, our family really enjoyed the rock scrambling of this hike. It is doable in a half day. We read the reviews about limited parking at the trailhead so ended up Ubering. It was easy to do so, and we got one within 5 minutes when we were ready to leave. Yes, it is tough but it was fun doing something different.

Great hike!

By Nastya |

Very easy to reach from Phoenix hiking trail that goes up the mountain top, where amazing views of Phoenix area open up to all sides. Some parts of the trail closer to the mountain top can be hard for beginners or elderly individuals. Notice that this is not a round trail, if you have to go back same way you came in order to return to your car.

Tough but beautiful

By lbleich |

If you are moderately active, you can climb this mountain. I would not recommend this for the inexperienced hiker/climber or for someone in average shape...you must be able to climb some significant boulders.

As well, the trails can be slippery so you must have good shoes and balance. All that aside, the climb is great and the views are magnificent from everywhere. Be sure to bring plenty of water if you are going to climb on a sunny/warm day.

The biggest downside to Camelback is the parking...it is very limited and you must get there early.

Tough climb, but worth it.

By Lockdown99 |

Not for the weak! First half is a bit of a challenge, then you realize that the second half is twice the effort of the first. You have to be somewhat fit, and very hydrated. You need at LEAST a half gallon of water to do this safely. FYI - a gallon weighs eight pounds.

Oh, and be prepared to be passed by beautiful JOGGING locals who use the mountain as their outdoor gym. Its pretty humbling to be passed by these folks!

Quad burning hike with incredible views

By Sally Stegeman F |

The hike will kick your ass - or at least it kicked mine - but it's a must-do while in the area. If you go slow and steady, the views are well worth the sweat and pain. Don't recommend going on weekends as parking will be unavailable. It can get quite busy. Early mornings or late afternoons are best bet to avoid peak heat and sun.

Hiking Camelback Mountain and amazing sunsets

By Richard L |

This hiking venue can be hiked on trails available off of 68th Street. If you want to drive up into lower areas or hike on paving that can be done from 56th Street. Sunsets are amazing!

Worth the effort

By YOMONOKO |

Not to get too personal but here’s the scoop:
I’m 59, 5’2” and shrinking, <120lbs and not especially active. This was a challenge! Don’t be fooled by the number of folks that are there. Make sure you wear the rights shoes (I’m pretty sure gonna lose a toenail or two). Water is a must! Sunscreen is a must! I made it to the summit! Coming back down was actually more challenging. By this time my legs were rubber! I often sat on the large boulders and slid down them. The rocks are slippery is many places. I was comforted by the knowledge the rescue team was training down below. Thankfully I didn’t need them. Take this mountain seriously and take plenty of rest breaks and remember to enjoy the views!

Great hike in the city!

By John P |

Was recommended this hike from a friend that lives in PHX. Wasnt dissapointed! It is a challenge for people like me that arent used to the dry heat! I was really glad that I took the advise from my friend and started early before the sun became too strong, ON my way down it was scorching! Great vew and great work out!

Very challenging, but has some great views of Phoenix at the top.

By Kevin |

If you hike Camelback Mountain, go in the early morning (like around sunrise) if you can to avoid the heat. I started at the Echo Canyon Trailhead and unfortunately got a later start than I wanted to...if I came at sunrise I would've avoided the heat and would've gotten shade from the mountain. You will be bouldering for a lot of this hike, and sometimes it can be hard to distinguish where the path is. Be ready to use your hands climbing up and down, as you will need them. It is definitely not an easy hike, but the views are outstanding. It took me about 1 hour 20 min to climb up, and about the same time to climb down (I had to go more slow climbing down as my knees were still sore from a previous strenuous hike at the Grand Canyon from several days before). Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat/sunglasses, along with snacks.

Camelback Mt

By Omahagma |

Very pretty mountain to hike. Need to be in fairly good shape to hike all the way to the top. There are places to stop along the way. Fun hike!

Brutal Experience!

By Ocean-Traveler55 |

We decided to hike/climb up Camelback Mountain in July with a temperature of 105 degrees! Definitely not our smartest decision! This was brutal hike in those temps and the trail can be very difficult. If you are not in great shape, this hike will test you.

You need to try this!

By JennioDesMoines |

We had such an interesting experience climbing this mountain. As someone who has had very little experience, it was somewhat challenging, but do-able! We were about 2/3 of the way up when we had to turn around since we had a commitment to get to, but we would have loved to get to the top! You don't necessarily need hiking boots, but you do need shoes with tread on them! Bring plenty of water as well. One thing that was a little annoying was that there isn't parking at the entrance to the trail. You have to walk at least a half mile from a main road you park on. If you're visiting Phoenix for two or more days, you should put this on your agenda--plan on 3 hours at least if you are not an avid climber! We really enjoyed meeting people on the trail--people from all over the country.

Prepare for a Pre-hike for the Cholla Trail

By Hollyrik |

Arrived Monday morning around 10:30 and had to park literally a mile away. I guess I could have cruised up and down the thoroughfare waiting for spots to open up closer to the trailhead by folks coming back down. Very popular trail, that involves a few sections of scrambling and other sections of rough trail, but overall a great experience to share with other locals and visitors. Views are great, and the trail has some hillside-shaded portions at this time of year (late-February). The trail itself is ~1300 vertical feet in 1.3 miles long. A walking stick came in handy in places.

Great mountain top view

By Emily M |

Love hiking Camelback! It’s a great, challenging hike with a great reward at the end. The view of Phoenix and the surrounding area is unprecedented! So worth all the work to get to the top!

Great Views!

By fdossman001 |

I really enjoyed this hike, but come prepared, it is not an easy day stroll. You'll be climbing over rocks and will need to use your hands to scramble. Bring water and food. Well worth the effort!

Rigorous climb - be prepared

By Momof3Zs |

The setting is beautiful but be prepared for an ambitious hike. It is not for the faint of heart. Very steep and rocky with some narrow passages. Bring plenty of water and nerves.

A hike to remember!!

By Jenni R |

I would say Im not the useful hiker enthusiast but I traveled to Arizona with my aunt and cousin for her spring break and Camelback was something they wanted to tackle. We went on a Friday around 9am, the heat was settling in and our hike was just starting, about half way up and the sun was strong. We did the Cholla trail, there is another trail on the other side of the rock. The hike isn't long in distance but it does take some time due to the incline/climbing you will need to do. I suggest proper hiking shoes with good grip for climbing rocks, and more then just a water bottle amount of water. The whole hike took us a bit over 2hrs. The down side to Camelback is how crowded it gets and there are narrow paths so getting around people may be a bit challenging. Over all I made it to the top and it felt like a large accomplishment! If your into hiking this is a must see trail!

AMAZING hike

By Shelley A. |

The hike exceeded our expectations! It was VERY challenging, had to stop several times on the way up. It was well worth the panoramic view at the top of the mountain. You can see everything from the top!

Cholla trail

By Chandra P |

We hiked the Cholla trail with our teenage son. He scampered up to the top in 45 minutes taking all out water with him! It is a strenuous hike but doable if you take your time and bring plenty of water. The views are spectacular. The trail is very crowded and you have to park on the street. Sometimes you can be quite a distance from the trailhead. It is definitely worth doing if you want a good workout.

Spectacular Mountain

By Oldjack |

I have climbed Camelback Mountain (when a little younger and in winter temperatures ) and the views are spectacular. This time in temperatures well over 100 I was happy justy to take in the view. It realy is a spectaular rock formation in Sc0ttsdale and always impressive.

No easy stroll

By dakrygier |

Tried cholla trail one weekend and echo mountain the next. Only made it about 1/4 -1/2 mile on each. Definitely not for wimps or out of shape couch potatoes. Scenery is gorgeous, trail can be a bit slick with small gravel. Going again soon anyway. Had a blast for the short walk I took.

Took Cholla trail

By mwpyle |

Wife and I hiked most of way up. Stopped just before big jump to top. Easier way. Still tough hike! Beautiful scenery.

Goal!

By AnitaJack |

My husband and I met our goal of getting to the top! Lots of sweat going up and done that mountain by everyone on it! Difficult trail.

Challenging but worth it

By mgtravel |

Wow, we were not expecting how strenuous this was. Definitely need to be in shape and prepared. Give yourself plenty of time (a few hours at least) and a lot of water. The later portion of the hike you’re basically climbing up rocks. We felt so accomplished at the peak seeing the 360 views. Definitely worth it if you’re up for the challenge.

Awesome view, but not an easy climb

By Gardengrl3 |

Even the Bobby’s rock trail rated “easy” had steep parts and uneven steps. The view is worth it. Tough parking. We had to wait for folks to leave.

Good Judgement Required

By Bman52 |

As an experienced hiker/backpacker, I can confirm the cautionary warnings at the Echo Canyon trail head. If you have any physical limitation concerning your knees, back, or shoulders, this hike is not for you, and you should consider a partial ascent or another venue. That said, be prepared to be rewarded with spectacular views that are rarely achieved during an urban hike. The upper portions of the trail are quite steep, and require require significant effort in navigating the boulder strewn, steep pitches. Know your limits, because you’ll have to come back the way you went up. Enjoy the spectacular views, take lots of memorable pictures, and marvel at the grace and vitality of the cross-fitters and trail-runners who will pass you along the way!

extreme "hiking" doesn't really do this justice

By Laura D |

IT is hard, it is hot, it is a lot of absolute vertical climbing. It is really hard and can be very dangerous. We felt a tremendous sense of pride and accomplishment once we are done, but it took about 3 hours to complete the less than 2 mile hike

Not an easy trek

By Shawn R |

We went mid-day. Hot, sunny day. There is no shade along the way. Take a hat.Take a lot of water. Take a lot of water. Remember, take a lot of water. There was a rescue going on when we started out trek. Early mornings, and days with clouds may be best. We did not push ourselves to finish the entire trip.

Sunrise

By Bill z |

Can you start the hike before sunrise or is there a gate now with the new entrance that’s closed? Wanted to do a sunrise hike. We’ve been many times and love this hike but want to try to experience the sunrise at the top

Visiting my daughter an grandson an son inlaw.

By Michele K |

Beautifully mountains. Loved it there.Went with daughter an family. Good for excersing. Took a lot of pictures.

Interesting Mountain.

By 2BNKD |

We stayed in Phoenix for a few days. We found out is it a very expensive place to find a motel room. Beyond that we really enjoyed our stay. We found many good restaurants.

Not for beginners

By MHLNJ |

I read many reviews and descriptions but didn’t fully grasp that this isn’t really a hike. It’s definitely more of a rock scramble. I would not go in wet weather and be sure to have very sturdy hiking shoes.

Worth the workout, for your eyes & soul

By Philips B |

Not for those looking for a casual stroll or romantic experience. Challenging hike that will engage all parts of your body going up and going down. The experience is well worth it, especially if you share the experience by going with others. We saw two bridal parties going up as we were coming down! Echo Canyon is the best path I think since it is in the shade over half the day. The geography and vegetation changes every few 100 feet in elevation. We started early, just after sunrise, it does get crowded as the day goes on. Everyone helps out taking pictures once you get to the top. Wave to the helicopter tourists flying overhead every 1/2 hour or so.

get after it

By jon s |

well worth the effort. is a vigorous hike but well worth it. where good shoes and get ready to climb. tremendous views

great hike

By Jonathan H |

beautiful views of Phoenix, plan on about 2 1/2 hours. It is worth it. Plan on about 1/2 mile walk before you get to the base of the trail.

Challenging Hike for First Timer

By philyk |

My wife and I who are both in shape did Camelback Mountain, the Cholla trail which is the easier of the two last week. It was very crowded the day after christmas, which was nice to see so many people around. We didn't feel rushed so did the trail at our own pace.

We only got to where the evacuation area is as it looked much steeper and challenging after that point, but all in all was an amazing experience.

Hard work but worth the effort

By Darin C |

We done the harder hike both ways, it is hard work but views from the top are amazing.
The car park was busy but we got a space easy enough.
Need water and good foot wear. Not for the faint hearted. We went early morning so it was cooler.

December Climb On Camelback Mountain

By Dave S |

It's been a few years since I took on this mountain and have never done it in December. Woke up early and was extremely luck to find a parking spot at the foot of the mountain.

We started our journey up where there is a very clear path and even the best shaped humans can get winded at the beginning.

Once the path is complete, there is no path. You take whatever moves you want, whatever rocks you want and any way you can elevate yourself up. The views are incredible along the way and you are surrounded by other climbers. And, you cannot rely on following other climbers as many of them don't know what they are doing.

This particular climb was very cool. People were dressed in Christmas sweaters and costumes. As we said "hello" to climbers on their way down, they were discussing Santa at the top. Once we got up there, we find Santa, singing elves and a Christmas Tree. Santa handed us each a candy cane and an elf took our photo. The views are incredible and you can see everywhere.

So much fun and I cannot wait to climb it again.

Mountain in the city

By J-from-Marysville |

Not many cities have a mountain inside city limits. Granted, it's not a huge mountain, but still worth a visit if you like to hike and are physically fit. I recommend visiting the Echo Canyon Trailhead. Plenty of parking (although the parking lot can fill up with no spaces at very busy times) and restroom facilities. The trail is a bit worn, so wear hiking boots. Sneakers may not be a good idea.

The only thing I don't like about the mountain are the encroachment of housing significantly up the sides of the mountain.

Making the Summit

By Larry T |

Good parking. Good easy initial trail to warm up on. Tuff climb for a 73 yo x-cigarette smoker but there is such beauty along this trail and with wonderful views of the Valley. It took me an hour and a half to get to the top and thirty-five minutes to get down. I went with son-in-law{age 54} that has an up and down time of 43 minutes. Next time I will start an hour ahead of him so we can summit together.

Nice and not easy...

By Vasilis1970 |

You can have a great idea of the Arizona's desert plants by just spending a couple of hours into a nice place.

Great Views, Tough Hike

By O2bA |

The views from up top were amazing. We went up the Echo Canyon Trail, which was must harder than we thought it was going to be. Having never been there before, we didn’t know what to expect. It was definitely a work out to get to the top but worth it. The Chollo Trail is supposed to be easier. Wear good shoes and bring water.

Amazing hike and adventure up and down the mountain

By Tal_Hameed |

This was my favourite experience in my trip to Phoenix/Scottsdale Arizona. On one of my days off from my business trip, I did my 2 hour hike up Camelback Mountain up the Echo Canyon trail. It was amazing and a great experience, with all the rock climbing. Not only was it good exercise but the view at the top is so worth it. I'd do it all over again. I scaled down on the choila trail.

Great hike and challenging!

By Kirk47 |

There are two trails --- Echo Canyon and Cholla. We did the Echo Canyon which has a nice parking lot but it is open only from dawn to dusk. The trail is steep and a scramble in several places. The trail ranges from gentle incline to you need to hold onto the railings provided to a very rocky scramble that you need to pick your way up or down. But it is definitely worth it. The views are great. Go do it!

Great centrally located hike (360 degree views)

By Dieter G |

We have been hiking Camelback for years. It is a must-do when visiting Phoenix. It is rough terrain either side so you have to be in reasonable shape and you have to bring water (all times of the year). Two sides to it - Echo Canyon (off McDonald/North Side) which is steeper and harder) or Invergordon (east side off street with that name) which is longer. Views at top are incredible (both trails end up top) - you can see all of Phoenix and surrounding communities. Best place to see both the beauty of Phoenix and the vastness of the city.

Challenging but great hike

By CincyBrian |

The hike up Camelback is only 1.2 miles (each way) but it is definitely difficult. It is almost all vertical and much of it is scrambling up rocks. The view is fantastic and worth the effort, but don’t start without knowing the challenge ahead of you.
Make sure you bring enough water! We went on a beautiful day with temps in the 60’s and even then I was glad I had more than a liter. Having some nutrition would be beneficial as well. Enjoy!

Dangerous and challenging

By Christine V |

Take ur time Extremely dangerous and definitely mentally challenging. Take water & light back pack. Will try again

Challenging Trail

By Lorri L |

A beautiful place to visit in the desert to hike. The trail can be a challenge so wear appropriate shoes, carry enough water, and don't go in the heat of the day.

not much else close by

By MeuterMedia |

Not much else close by for a quick hike. Our hotel was just minutes driving distance, but come early temp up to 103F in September!!!

Beautiful, difficult hike

By Jen B |

Parked at Echo Canyon trailhead and it was very nice. Clean bathrooms and water fountains. Walked the Bobbi Rock loop while we waited for friends. It was pretty and a good warm-up. The hike is tough! You are definitely climbing a mountain, not just going on a hike. Took us about 50 minutes to get to the top. I had hiking shoes on and it made a difference. It was nice to have a little extra traction and the rounded, reinforced toe. It had rained and the rocks were slick, but it stayed cool and that definitely helped. It was a beautiful view of the mountains the entire way and we really enjoyed the view from the top. The hike down was precarious, but we were careful and made it down safely. I definitely recommend it, make sure you are in good shape and have lots of water, its a double black diamond for a reason!

Amazing Mountain

By Grace D |

Be prepared to challenge yourself. It might seem at first an easy hike, but as you get closer to midpoint it seem to never reach the top. very steep incline, and ascending is no fun. The views are incredible and well worth the climb. Make sure its not inclement weather in February we were sweating. Bring plenty of water, and good shoes. Then enjoy the fun.

Great Hike

By KML |

Great time hiking. Bring a good amount of water and make sure to wear athletic shoes. It seems you cannot get dropped off at the base of the path anymore, FYI.

Hiking to Camelback Mountain Summit

By Tina E |

We hiked up Cholla Trail to the summit and returned via the Echo Canyon trail. This was NOT our original plan. If you have a fear of falling I would avoid the Cholla Trail. The trail is near some shear drop off areas (in my humble opinion) where challenging climbing is required. The climb up was doable but returning via the same trail seemed terrifying due to my fear of heights. Both trails are challenging. I enjoyed the Echo trail much more. The trails are further from the edge and wider. I definitely recommend this hike with the above in mind. Challenge level is similar both ways. The views from the summit makes it all worthwhile. We took Lyft back to our car for under $10. It was rewarding to hike both trails, but if I were to do it again, I would hike only the Echo Canyon trail.

Camelback Mountain is a must Do

By JonW |

...But only if you are in good shape. It will challenge the fit and break the weak but once to the top, it is euphoric!

Outstanding!

By JA |

Camelback is stunning -- we had a great view out our hotel and room balcony. Also, climbed from Echo Canyon which is pretty steep and some parts very steep with some rock scrambling.Thought it was pretty difficult and we are experienced hikers. Also, the heat is an issue if you don't start your climb early AM. And LOTS of hikers!

DO NOT BE FOOLED!

By mcmichael131313 |

This Mountain can "HURT" you. Every other day we see injured people on the local news. Weekly we see Helicopter rescues. This benign looking mountain can take you Down. Beware of the heat and know it illeagle to bring your dog over 100 degrees.

Easily Seen

By B. Parks |

The tallest point in the area and is an interesting reference point as you drive and look around the area.

Not What I thought??

By Antonio S |

I hiked Camelback Mtn this week and personally i think one requires special gear once you get the steep incline steps. Not sure why there is not more accidents?? I am in my early 50's in decent shape and i struggled. As far as enjoyment, it was not. Of course, when you get to the top, its magnificent. It should be after all that huffing and puffing, one deserves a grand view!! Lol. I think for me once was enough. I would prefer a good hike more on level desert ground in which i dont have keep looking at the ground for dangerous rocks to fall over on!

Short adventure worth the workout

By Michelle L |

My husband and I visited Camelback Mountain while we were in Phoenix for a conference he had. We took an Uber from our hotel in downtown Phoenix. Super easy. We were dropped off at the Cholla trailhead. There are NO restrooms and you have to walk up the road to get there. It is definitely NOT an easy hike. The first third is hiking and tiring for sure. You are going up constantly. The last bit is climbing. You have to use your hands to climb. There were people of all ages though. Once at the top, the view was beautiful. It was worth the effort and exercise. We really had fun. We had more fun coming down even. It's just as difficult coming down. Bring plenty of water no matter what time of year AND be sure to wear appropriate shoes. People get sick or hurt often there. If you plan ahead, you will be fine. Have fun!

Great, and easy with public transport

By kenny D |

The is a great hike with lovely views. Steep pretty much all the way to the top. If you're downtown and on a budget you can get there and back on public transport for $4 (price of an all day bus ticket). I took a number 1 bus at about 5.20 am, this connects to a number 44 bus at Washington & 44th which takes you to McDonald Drive & 47th, which is a 5 min walk to the Echo Canyon Trailhead. Going up from Echo Canyon means you walk in shade quite a lot of the time. Same route in reverse to get back. Was back downtown around 10 am. Buses are easy to navigate and bus drivers helpful.

rugged rocky trail , great views

By dakgrl |

may need to wait a bit to get parking (even early) but can not beat the views. The views are incredible. As most others have said: definitely do not do this in mid day heat. do not underestimate. the distance is not far but most is over rocks not a dirt trail.

Cardio workout - Tough climb - have good shoes and water

By namabeer |

I'm an avid hiker doing Himilaya, European Alps, Rockies etc... and this one is a intense short hike. After 5 day of hiking in Sedona, this was supposed to be a wind down but it sure wasn't . It was 68 degrees and i was sweating like a dog and panting. So i can't imagine doing this at 80s or even 100 degrees weather. Did the classic Echo trail which is harder than other side. Go early or no parking

It's fun and mentally challenging. You need to look for a path of least resistance. It's a BOULDER Scramble not a hike. Good to have high cut hiking boots and your hands free so don't carry a water bottle in you hand. Actually saw someone with high heels. Prob didn't make it. Didn't see any kids make it.

It took 3 hrs including rest a top. Thought i could do it in 2 hrs but it was tough and what's the rush. Saw on youtube some guy can run up it in 19 mins.

Once at the top have a snack and enjoy the views

Coming down was just as hard in a diff aspect. Killer on knees and ankle and upper body as you had to use arms on boulders to lift yourself to next step.

All in all it was fun and challenging. Just take your time esp if no time constraints and slowly make it up there. Another hike off my bucket list.

Great hike for phenomenal view

We did this hike on a beautiful 70 degree day and it was very challenging. Hardest hike we've ever done but it was so worth it. Take plenty of water. Crowded trail but not so much that it takes away from the experience. Wear hiking shoes! Plan on 2-3 hours - 2 if you are fit.

Challenging Climb

By 903kristaln |

A challenging climb up the Cholla trail on the camels back, but the views from the top are amazing. Go early, because as it gets later in the day, parking for the trail becomes scarce. I stopped after the first hump, as the climb gets significantly steeper once you reach the lookout point, but you can see all of Phoenix from there so it is a good stopping point. There is no shade. Expect full sun the entire hike so you should take precautions and bring plenty of water. Definitely not a trail for beginners.

Camelback Mountain via Echo Canyon trail

By Nikko Gandia |

Hiked via Echo Canyon trail on 5/5 & other trails during a Phoenix/Sedona trip & posted a trail guide video! Search [Nikko Gandia Camelback Mountain Trail Guide]. Blog post version is linked the video's description! Parking fills up fast, snagged a spot by starting later in the day. Facilities available at trailhead-water, restrooms, shade canopy, & benches. Bring enough water for the heat & inclines! Steep inclines/technical scrambles at the midway point for about a 10th of a mile & during the last quarter of a mile of the summit. 360 views are awesome.

Hike almost killed me but glad I did it

The hike up is very, very, very steep and there is a lot (a lot a lot!) of boulder scrambling. The pain in your quads on the way up is exceeded only by the pain in your quads on the way down. Great view up top.

Camelback Burn

By JerryMartin |

This was a very short but very awesome hike. It requires scrambling over rocks and using railings to advance oneself upwards. Your quads will be burning once at the top.

One of the best hikes!

In the warmer weather, make sure to head out nice and early. It gets hot fast and the trail gets very busy. If you are a serious trail runner get there as soon as the sun goes up. I go multiple times a year.

2nd time I've climbed this mtn

I'm an active mid 50s female. This is an All uphill about 1k feet, if you don't prepare yourself with water, snack bars & weather clothing suitable, you will not do well. Take gloves for hike back down - as I used mine, the rocks are very large and rough and could cut your skin otherwise. I saw people much younger than myself turning back. Some people not physically fit to manage this climb, so be careful and aware of your own body. Top views are amazing - and worth the climb.

A must do

This is the most rewarding hike in the Phoenix area! The views from the top are worth the effort.
However, word to the wise: put on some good shoes, it’s slippery in many parts if it rains.
Also there’s no reason to go hike there during the hot summer months no matter how much water you bring along: don’t underestimate the Phoenix heat.
I saw many families with kids so technically anyone can complete this hike. However I’ve also seen many people turning around.
Know your limitations because it might take a while for help to arrive!
Will definitely return!

Hiking

Difficult hike, but views were amazing! Rocky climb, more so than a traditional hike, so proper hiking boots are required.

Too many people - views are ok

By SuperCub |

Lots of hikers are always in this area. I'd rather go to south mountain and hike there for better views and less crowds. Just feels like a big stair climber where at the end, you see a bunch of houses.

So glad we hiked Camelback

By KidKansas |

We were in the Phoenix area for a "mini-vacation" and my wife and I decided to hike Camelback. She had been before and had hiked the Cholla trail with our daughter, so this time she wanted to hike the Echo Canyon trail.

We went on a Sunday in January at around 11:00 a.m. and the temperature was in the low 60's with plenty of sun. Parking was a little bit of an issue, as there isn't much on the Echo Canyon side. We lucked out, though, and within 5 minutes someone was leaving and we had a spot in the upper lot nearest the trail.

The trail head has restrooms and the obligatory signs warning you that the hike you are about to take is strenuous and you need to make sure to bring plenty of water. Please pay attention to the signs and know your capabilities so you aren't one of the people who get evacuated from the mountain by helicopter.

The first part of the trail is loose sandy gravel but is relatively easy until you arrive at the stairs. The stairs aren't too bad, but watch your head so you don't hit it on the rock to your right. I've done that and it hurts like the dickens, so please learn from my mistake ;). Now - my wife went ahead of me and upon reaching the top of the stairs she looked around the corner and said it was mostly flat for quite a while -- she didn't look far enough, because next is the first rail and it is more vertical than flat. Many people were grabbing onto the fence or rail -- I tried to go up the right side on mostly all 4's and, with a couple slips in for good fun, made it to the top. From there it continued to be as much scrambling as hiking until you reach the summit.

There are signs quite often along the way that show you where you are in the ascent and what the rest of the adventure entails from there. Those were very helpful -- I didn't really pay attention to them until I was about 3 from the top, but I really paid attention on the way down and I think they are quite awesome. Especially if you want to know where you are in the hike and what it looks like from there.

The summit has amazing views of the entire valley and it looks like the city of Phoenix and its suburbs stretches on forever. We probably spent about 20 minutes at the top taking photos and enjoying the scenery. The trip down took us about 30 minutes, but we spent quite a bit of time making sure the people coming up had the right-of-way.

It took us an hour and 25 minutes to summit and about 30 minutes to go down. If you search Camelback on the web, you can find people who make it up in under 20 minutes. Those folks are on a mission, and sightseeing on the way up isn't part of it.

This was a great hike, and I am very, very glad we took on the challenge. After this, and Piestewa, I needed a day to recover, but I wouldn't change a thing about the trip.

GREAT hike!

By AtlantaGATrvlr |

I hiked the Cholla Trail in February. The weather was great and so were the views. Lots of bouldering - particularly near the top, so take your time, wear the correct shoes and know when to turn around if you are not comfortable. Remember that you are in the desert- so take water. There were many people on the trail on this particularly Sunday afternoon, so getting lost was not really an option. A great hike (I've done it twice now) that I always recommend to anyone traveling to the area.

Great challenging hike, parking can be an issue so start before sunrise

By AvgJoe3 |

The hike itself was awesome. Challenging with significant vertical elevation change, but a feeling of accomplishment when completed. You do need to be in pretty good shape. We started at about 5:30 and used flashlights in the beginning. This allowed us to find a parking spot and view the sunrise from the mountain top.
Negatives - Difficult to find parking. Crowded and not many masks in these times of Covid.
Positives - Great challenging hike. Excellent views from the top.
