Excellent transport coming & going

By TravelDiva001 |

Going to Cape May for the day whilst on holiday & took the ferry both ways. The personnel at ticket processing were very kind and helpful. We finished in Cape May earlier than expected, was able to get in the “stand by” lane for an earlier ride back to Lewes, Delaware & was successful.
The sea was choppy both rides, but the captain held the course and we had a pleasant ride. The ferries were clean, comfortable, and well maintained. I was impressed at how clean, pleasant smelling, and well equipped the bathrooms were. Food, beverages, and gifts were available for purchase, but we did not buy anything. Nice views of 2 lighthouses & great photo opportunities. The price for 2 senior adults and our minivan round trip was $89.00.

Ferry ride

Great trip friendly staff and grandkids enjoyed their first ferry ride 😁. Would recommend it to all who want to get to and from Lewis/Cape May.

Beautiful Boat Ride, Smooth Ride !!

By BrianB7661 |

The ride was very smooth, in fact my wife fell asleep on a bench sunning herself. Great views, nice ride, they have a snack bar ... what more could you ask for saving 3 hours driving time going around the long way !! Take a ride ... get some sun, save time !! We recommend this highly !!

Staff not only welcomes ADA riders but goes above and beyond

By Cathy G |

This ride was AMAZING….

The pictures are important because when we were trying to find information on the ferry ride, we struggled to find information regarding accessibility

Not only was the ferry accessible, the entire experience was beyond our expectations

A ferry for people to cross, whether for business or pleasure was very enjoyable!
There is a snack bar area, as well as 2 bars,

You have the option to purchase a one way ticket or round trip..
There is a shuttle available to go into Cape May if you opt not to take your car.
We left our car parked on the
Lewes, Delaware side

Approximately an 85- minute ride one way
You can tell from the pictures that security is tight

It was very easy for my husband to maneuver the port, load and on the ferry!
We opted to go round trip and stay on the boat.
We had basically a 3 -hour trip

The cost was $36 for both of us on the "New Jersey".
Tyrone and Susan were amazing, and went the extra mile to accommodate my husband and I.
There is an elevator in the buildings to access the loading area, a ramp to access the ferry and an elevator to access the top deck.

No matter why you are visiting Lewes, I recommend a ride on the ferry!
You have a very good chance of seeing dolphins and possibly even a whale

Regardless, the view is breathtaking!

Nice Ferry Ride Between Cape May and Lewes

By Helen S |

We took the ferry from Lewes, Delaware to Cape May, New Jersey, and then back again 3 days later. It is easy to book online or by phone. Getting on and off the ferry is simple and both terminals have bathrooms, food and waiting areas. We took our car, and the round trip was quite reasonable- $100 for the car and 2 Seniors. It cut out a lot of driving and was very relaxing. You can also walk on at either side.

The day we were returning, it was raining very hard in Cape May, so instead of going in to town to shop and have lucnh, we ate near the terminal. Consequently, we arrived more than an hour before the time we were supposed to be there. The nice Lady who took our ticket asked if we would like to go back early on the 1:00 ferry, instead of waiting for the 2:30 ferry. We said yes, and she changed it for us. We only had to wait about 12 minutes before they started loading the ferry to return.

Thanks to that Lady at the check in booth in Cape May. We appreciated her kindness.

Cape May-Lewes Ferry

The employees of the Ferry service are very accommodating and friendly! The ferry is very smooth, on time, and a delightful and economical ocean / river delta experience!

Relaxing ride

By Carol |

The ferry is easy to take. We took our car which is a little pricy but we wanted to drive around Cape May area, We just spent the day in Cape May, on the trip over we stayed on the outside feeling the breeze and looking at the bay and on the trip back we sat in comfort inside with free WiFi.

Nice way to get away

By Rob Y |

Nice ride with a bar on the top floor. Can be a bit challenging when walking at times but that is part of the fun

Sunset View

By CH.BR |

It is nice experience to take Cape May/ Lewes Ferry. Pet friendly. There is a pet section in the ferry. During the sunset time to take ferry and enjoy the view from the ferry. Really nice.

Nice way to get a short cut to Atlantic City

By bnewland |

The Ferry is a great way to get from Lewes Delaware to Cape May New Jersey and back again. It is a welcomed short cut going to Atlantic City. Nice trip.

Inside the ferry you feel the motor shaking the boat. Seats are duck taped. Not worth the fee. I much prefer to drive in my comfortable car.

Good Experience

By Laure-Anne A |

I booked my passage on-line which was very simple but tickets can also be purchased at the toll booth. Whether traveling by bike, car, motorcycle, camper or walking make sure to have your driver's license ready. Being that I purchased the ticket I had to show ID but it was not required of my friend. The officers were efficient in their search routine which made me feel comfortable. You are allowed to walk around and there are a gift shop and a small food court inside. Drinks are served outside and on the ship. The ride on the ferry is about an hour and a half and wasn't bad. Announcements are clear and inform you when to return to your car. They have a decent system that gets you on and off the boat fairly quickly.

Parker says, "Great way to get from DE to NJ"

By Parker Sturbridge |

Nice ferry ride from Lewes, DE to Cape May, NJ. Amenities on board looked a little dicey, but people were partaking nonetheless. Staff was very pleasant.

Handicap Elevator out of order!

By Daisygirl404 |

Been taking the ferry for 25+ years. Usually a good ride. But Saturday crossing from NJ to DE was a nightmare! My husband needs assistance since he can't climb stairs. Well we were told handicap elevator out of order and he'd have to walk the walkway ( which is very long) with his walker to the boat! Would have been nice if posted online staff said it's been out for quite sometime! Caused great distress for husband and today I drove home 4 hours instead of subjecting him to more inconvenience and injury!

Relaxing way to be out on the water

By Anita L |

This was a great way to spend several hours out on the water while on vacation at Rehoboth Beach. A short drive over to Lewes, then we walked onboard for a relaxing crossing to Cape May. There, we enjoyed walking around and having a snack before returning via the ferry. I

"Outing at sea"

By Pyramidion |

After 80+ ocean cruises including 4 Atlantic crossings this is our perfect day at sea. Tired of the magicians, jugglers and endless dining we enjoy a short outing on the briny. Food and drink available. We are foot roudtrip passengers who enjoy the salt air and sleeping at our own home after a day trip. It's cheap, fun and an easy getaway. . Pick a calm sunny day and enjoy the "cruise". Have done the trip several times after a short visit and lunch from both Cape May and Lewes Delaware. A two to three hour drive from the Philadelphia area.

We were visiting Ocean City Maryland for the motorcycle week

By Judy Z |

Going back to Cape May trying to get on the ferry is a little exhausting at times but we met a gentleman Chris on the Lewis side and he was so helpful and so accommodating we will be traveling a lot more on the ferry. I deal with people on a daily business either at CVS Pharmacy where I work or driving a school bus, when you get to meet people like Chris that are very helpful and get you where you want to go with a big smile it brightens your day. So I just want to thank Chris again for getting us where we want to go and helping us out

Disrespectful

By Isabella |

The worker there named fill was very disrespectful to my mother and to the bartender making drinks he is not equiped to be working on this ferry

Great ferry. Bring food.

By BuskyBusk |

Love the service but remember to eat prior to arriving or pack a lunch. The food offerings in the terminal are dire and extremely expensive.

CHECK THE DATE ON YOUR TICKET

By Tiffany P |

The ferry is great and convenient and pretty and all but the system for booking has been broken since at least last year which makes a ton of people not allowed to get on the ferry they booked. If there aren’t enough tickets for that day, sometimes the system still shows as available and it books you. But the date on the actual ticket is the wrong day.

Example: I booked a ticket for June 22, it says June 22 on the confirmation webpage. But when they email you the actual PDF ticket it says June 21. So when you show up on June 22, they tell you they can’t take you and you have to wait on standby for the next available ferry.

This is the THIRD time this has happened in a year, and because of their booking mistake, you’ll have to wait on standby for the next available ferry, which could be 3 hours later on a busy summer weekend.

I’ve spoken to the ticket booker and manager directly and they’ve told me they know it’s been broken since at least 2023. It’s still happening in 2024 that they are selling tickets that don’t exist and wasting your time. So be careful, check your PDF emailed ticket and call them immediately if that happens and hopefully someone will actually help you

Fun family adventure

By Cindy D |

Took a one way trip to Lewes from Cape May and it was an awesome way to spend an afternoon. Ticket was bought ahead of time and it was super easy checking in at gate. Facility was cleaned and offered free putt putt golf while waiting to board. We did board our ferry much past the time posted, so that was a long time in waiting but not a huge deal.
The ride was fun, food and snacks were moderately priced and kids had a great time. Exiting the ferry with our vehicle was surprisingly easy and fast! We would definitely do this trip again!

Customer Service is terrible

By lance m |

I parked my car in their parking lot for 3 days while I traveled the Cape May Ferry on a small vacation. The DRBA Officer called me to say that their maintenance crew was weed whacking next the my vehicle and kicked up a stone which shattered the window. Accidents happen and I was not upset. Robert Piha claims for DRBA refuses to refund me for the $498.00 to replace my window and said that I shouldn't of been parked there for that long (3 days) even though I was using the Ferry. I am a frequent traveler of the Cape May Ferry spending thousands of dollars. I have never been treated like this over an accident. $498.00 for a window to be replaced and they wont make it right.

Great boat ride but exiting Lewes can be annoying.

By Heather F |

We enjoyed our experience on the ferry. Both the Cape May and Lewes Terminals are clean and easy to navigate. The boat ride itself was wonderful although I would not recommend planning to get decent food while on the ferry. If you are departing to head into Lewes or other DE beaches you should plan on adding extra time - there is now a very busy bike trail that crosses Freeman Hwy. We were literally stopped for a solid 15 mins on a Sat while we had to let the parade of bikers and walkers go past. Bikers seem to want to cross at the intersection at Monroe and Freeman - so be careful - they will expect you to stop for them there as well. I have nothing against a good bike ride but there seem to be a HUGE amount of bikers and this will likely delay your drive.

Fast trip and great ride.

By Carl3181966 |

We enjoyed the ride. We each had a breakfast sandwich on the way across from Cape May to Lewes. We saved time, gas, and had a fun boat ride. We reserved a spot on board for our us and our vehicle and everything was ready to go when we arrived. We will use the ferry again.

Efficient and Clean Ferry!

By Garfieldluvr |

I took this ferry from Lewes to Cape May to shave off some time on the drive. I gotta admit, I was a bit nervous as I have never driven a car onto a boat before, haha. Their process was really clear and efficient. I parked and was able to sit up at the top of the boat and enjoy the ride. Getting off the ferry was a breeze too! The boat was clean, had plenty of seats, and staff were all friendly.

Great views

By Matsui55 |

Most of the employees are nice, boat is usually on time, gate supervisor in Lewes is nasty. She can really ruin your day!Odd criteria used for customer service. Not enough boats to serve the summer crowds.

Worth the ride!

By laycockmel |

What a great experience. We totally enjoyed the ride both ways. Book your shuttle for Cape May, as it’s some distance to the actual tourist area. It was very crowded, but we enjoyed ourselves. Even ran into one of our local politicians! We saw pelicans on the way back.

Snacks on board were very good! Staff very friendly!

Excellent experience

By adventix |

We had a wonderful experience on the Cape May Ferry and would highly recommend it to anyone traveling between Delaware and New Jersey. The entire process was smooth and well-organized from start to finish (and cheap!). The ferry was comfortable, with plenty of seating options to relax during the journey. One feature I particularly appreciated was the abundance of electrical outlets throughout the cabin, which made it easy to charge my laptop and get some work done during the 1 hour and 25 minute crossing. It's a productive way to travel! The ferry departed and arrived right on time, which made planning the rest of our day very easy. The boarding process was straightforward and efficient - no confusion or stress about getting on or off the vessel.

Super amazing way to get from DE to NJ or NJ to DE

By 4adventures |

Super amazing way to get from DE to NJ. Staff was friendly and the boarding process was well organized. Make your timed reservation ahead of your planned visit.

Great Service with Excellent Staff

By Sonny J. |

I have not been on the Cape May Lewes ferry in a while but recently had to travel to New Jersey. From purchasing the tickets to traveling on the ferry was perfect. Staff very helpful and friendly, ferries are very clean. Trip across Delaware bay is beautiful and the ferries are on time.

Given pain in neck

By dandelvacchio |

. Took 745pm dec 31 from Lewis DE. Only 3 cars waiting. Hand my ticket scanned truck checked
Same guard short with curly hair. Knocks on my windshield again.
You already checked me.
Oh I forgot!
Next we are boarding she is aiming her obnoxious bright flashlight in our faces to board.
Once aboard it's 30 degrees I have a dog in car
Tap tap oh you gotta shut off your engine and lights. They can't see to steer the ship
So I quess the ferry lacks radar, sonar, GPS ,autopilot?

Relaxing ride

By Ellie |

If walk on passenger, good way to spend a few hours. If driving your car, going to shorten your trip south (or north) along the coast.

Great experience - worth the cost

By Anthony T |

Worth the money especially if you're looking to avoid I-95. If you are going to Atlantic City or somewhere in southern NJ, this is a great idea. It is about a 80 minute trip and you get to see some dolphins and other sea life. Pleasant ride. Turn off your car alarm!

On Time!

By Lonesome_Sparrow |

I booked in advance and when I arrived there were no ticket problems, On the website they say boarding begins an hour before departure, but it turned out it was 15 minutes before departure. But it was quick so that the departure was quite on time.

Enjoyed

By pamk1103 |

My husband and I took the ferry from Lewes -Cape May, We had no problems at all this was not our first time doing this, The staff was niece, and over all the ferry was clean., however as we sat on the inside we took note to how it needed to be repainted there was lot of paint coming off the walls in the lounge area,, and we could see the underneath of the awning on the side,, and wow was it a mess all rusted and in dire need of a paint job.

How ever our purpose of the trip was to enjoy the ride to Cpe May, which we did , I feel it is worth the trip,

unreasonable security

Tried to search our car for no reason. We dont succumb to tyranny and constitutional violations. We have the right to be presumed innocent and not treated like criminals. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE

Great way to start the Holidays!!

By DoctorM-Squared |

We usually only take the Cape May- Lewis Ferry for our summer holiday but decided to take the Ferry to Victorian Cape May to get into the Holiday spirit! Great idea!

Kids LOVE going on the boat, especially when we drive a vehicle onto the boat! It is so much better than just hurtling down I-95.

There is plenty of fast food and even healthy fast food options at the terminal and onboard. There are also great gift shops in the terminals and onboard.

The law enforcement officers and crew are super friendly and considerate, especially with children.

Even if you might not be comfortable on boats, you should give this one a try, it’s fun and interesting even in nasty weather.

Keeping an eye out for dolphin/porpoise or even whales, gives everyone something to focus on, which keeps those who may have a generalized fear of boats from getting too worked up.

Rocky Seas on our trip

By Elaine G |

Ferry was rough and I felt sick but that was nature's fault. Hamburgers were not good at all so eat before you get on. One beer and a glass of soda was 16.00 and I didn't realize until back at hotel that I was shorted 20.00 change from my 100.00 bill! I usually count my change but unfortunately did not this time. If you don't get seasick then it is a nice trip.

Disappointed

By preciousness22 |

We missed two ferries in a row. How do you ask? Well, the first time we called over the phone and tried to book the 12:15 the day after Memorial Day, but were told it was too close to the time it left and that we should drive up to the ferry and get a ticket in person, which we did, only to arrive and be told we just missed it....... so we left and were told the next one was leaving at 2:45 so we left, had lunch in the area, and came back at 2 pm to be told that it was sold out! Why didn't they tell us there is only 1 ferry and that it sells out quick and that we should purchase our tickets ASAP? Poor customer service! TIP -- book early online.

A beautiful day for a ride in the Delaware Bay

By Justin W |

I took the Cape May-Lewes Ferry again for the trip from Cape May to Lewis, DE and it was the easiest trip both to make a reservation and to get to the ferry.

I took the 2:30pm ferry ( I suggest making the reservation ahead of time as it was crowded) and it was a pleasure. I got there in plenty of time to go to the main building to go to the bathroom. They also have a very nice outdoor bar there for people going over without a car.

The ride was so smooth that day and the weather was bright and sunny. The bartender was nice enough to put on the Michigan State football game so that I could watch it while we made the trip. I thought that was very nice of him.

We got to Lewis about ten minutes early and the ride off the boat was so easy. It is a straight run to Route One.

I will take it again in the future.

Good value

By Rajagopal S |

A very good option to go to ocean city if you are traveling from NJ … kids liked it too. It is about an hour and 15 mins sail from cape May to Ocean city MD . Easy booking … costed ok - we paid about 37$ for our van and 10$ per person .

Ferry had lots of seats inside and outside the deck . I really liked the push back seats 💺.. very comfortable . They also have a gift shop and a small cafe with coffee and some snacks . There is also a bar on the 2nd floor. Very organized . Very comfortable . Had to wait an hour to board .. restaurants inside the ferry terminal weren’t that good . Overall a good experience…

Just plain fun...and useful

By Bob T |

We've avoided the hassle of reservations and fickle weather and driven extra miles for decades. Our mistake. We've taken dozens of ferries in Europe-- even trains use ferries to get around in Scandinavia--and they're always fun short mini-cruises we look forward to. This doesn't reach European standards, but it's still a great way to spend and hour and a half on the water and save many miles of driving between southern Jersey and the Delaware beaches. It's smaller than most European ferries -- no trains here-- so it rocks and rolls a bit in the open waters. If you walk along the center spine of the boat it's pretty easy to get around, though. The food is mediocre but the Cape May IPA cans are cold and the seating is comfortable. In future we'll look for an excuse to use it rather than try to avoid it.

Masks missing despite being required

By Steve W |

Very disappointed that masks were hardly used indoors on recent trips of the ferry. The staff indoors seemed to have masks but many wore them below their nose. Of the passengers, masks were few and far between despite the mention on their website and being required on public transport into 2022. The ferry did not seem to be enforcing the mask mandate at all. There were few if any signs or announcements about masks being required. While we did travel, we stayed outdoors due to the unsafe indoor environment.

Now masks aside, the operation of loading and unloading went smoothly. It is about an hour and a half plus load/unload for a 17 mile trip. This seems a little slow but can save hours in driving. Make sure to book in advance especially in the summer and get their about half an hour in advance.

Beats driving around Philly

By Walt Ramsey |

I have been using the Ferry for years when I lived on LI NY to visit my grandkids in the Lewes area. Since I now live in Lewes my friends visiting me love the Ferry ride since they can leave their car in NJ and I can pick them up in Lewes. No sweat! Great way to end a long trip! Everybody who works for the Ferry is WONDERFUL!

Wonderful relaxing trip

By worldtravelier |

Even if you don't want to travel to either Lewes or the outlets, the ferry ride is worth the trip. On board they have: TV, gift shop, snack bar, and booze bar. The chairs are quite confortable. Go enjoy! Happy travels!

Great Crossing With Nice Views

By bbbob84 |

We enjoyed our trips on the ferry from and to Cape May. Our destination was DE. The staff were great about getting our car onboard and off with little or no issues. The terminals on both sides are clean, well organized and have seating available. The ferries were clean and well maintained. We enjoyed both of our trips within a few days of each other and will gladly do it again.

Lack of concern and unprofessionalism in light of a pandemic

By Billjensen107 |

I will not cast aspersions on the CMLF as a fun adventure on the water BUT I must tell of the lack of compassion or concern for a family asking for a courtesy from the management team, more specifically Mr. Terry Anstead and his subordinate...Mr. Chris Cox. My family and I had expired ( yet fully paid tickets ) in my possession and I had asked a very polite staff women if an exception could be made for a family with expired tickets due to a family issue and subsequent long covid restrictions relating to the ongoing pandemic. The staff person stated that if I contacted management in most circumstances they would consider a policy exception. She was eager to help and looked up my past reservation with ease to verify my purchase of tickets. I wrote to Mr. Cox who abruptly said he was "unable to look up expired tickets" and would not offer any help or professional courtesy. I then was told by the same sweet lady that I could contact the "BOSS" Mr. Anstead. He was quick to respond and wanted "clarity" around my request even as I explained to him my family situation! He also declined any help and was very dismissive of my request. He stated policy but never answered why the original tickets were o easy to look up by an employee yet a supervisor (Mt. Cox) was unable or unwilling to do so! Poor, uncaring and callous management. Shame on them during this very difficult time in our country.

Did a walk on this time instead of bringing the car

By Justin W |

I was visiting Cape May for the Christmas holidays and went to visit my brother who was visiting in Rehoboth Beach, DE for the holidays. So instead of bringing my car which I had done many times before, I just walked on and left the car in the parking lot at Cape May, which was so much easier.

The trip was a real pleasure. I made the reservations in advance so I was ready to go and I got there a half hour earlier and ended up leaving because there was no place to grab some breakfast and the woman was not sure that there was going to be food service on the boat ride over (there was) but still it was a nice day to travel and it turned clear and sunny on the way over. It was a smooth ride and they showed Christmas movies on the TV on the ride over.

The people that work there are really nice and the terminal was so beautifully decorated with garland and Christmas trees for the holidays. It is such a pleasure taking the ferry.

Fun trip, great experience

By Mary Ann V |

Staff were outstanding and very helpful. The Ferry was very clean and organized. Although the the sailing was sold out, I walked around all the decks and it did not feel crowded. This is a great way to get across the Delaware Bay.

A day in Cape May

By Ren1971 |

the ferry trip from Lewes to Cape May was nice and uneventful. It was mid week so not too busy. It was a long boat ride which didn't allow for as much time exploring Cape May as I had hoped, but saw enough to know I'd want to go back to spend more time :) The only real complaint is when inside the boat the door slams really loudly and people are constantly going in and out.

Pleasant and breezy ferry ride

By Joan M |

Ferry terminal in Cape May was easy to find, simple and quick loading and unloading. Ferry was clean and offered plenary of food and beverages.

Day trip to Lewes from Cape May

By Lilred |

We have taken this ferry many times with our car while traveling to VA, but today we did a day trip from Cape May
We took our bicycles and decided to do a day trip from Cape May to Lewes. We rode to the Cape Henlopen State Park, which is very close, and did a 12 mile bike ride. Pretty good for 2 seniors lol. It was so easy to go on and off with our bikes. The ride both ways was scenic. We even saw 2 bald eagles sitting on the tower by the ferry dock. The ferry is spacious and clean. There are bars and some food options available. We picked up a turkey sandwich, on the way over to Lewes, that was very fresh and delicious. On the way back we sat at the bar at the restaurant on the Lewes side for a drink. The food options there looked great, so we will def have to try that next time. We had such a fun day trip!!

Efficient and fun

By turgonuk |

Travelled from Cape May to Lewes in May 25. Very well organised getting on and off the ferry (we had a car). Smart terminal building with food, drink and other items. Plenty of room on the boat, inside and out. Clean and smart too.

Dissapointed by Reservations

By Dennis |

Was pretty disappointed to find out this was reservations only, and I know I am not alone in this. Planned on crossing this waterway for a shorter trip from NJ to DE, but this ferry does not seem to have any capacity for busy season vehicles and is booked for days in advance. Seems to me that the business opportunity would be to add more boats. Having lived on the great lakes in Ohio and using ferry crossing all the time, I can't believe this company does not add more capacity for everyone to pass, and most importantly, WITHOUT RESERVATIONS. How is anyone even supposed to know that you need reservations unless they want to go to your website? Hopefully someday you realize how much revenue you are losing because of reservations and decide to invest in growing your capacity.

Fun and scenic trip ... great value

By debrak2 |

My daughter and I took the ferry for a day trip to Rehoboth Beach, DE. I can understand why people do this as a trip in and of itself; it is relaxing and fun. They take all COVID precautions, requiring masks, using directional arrows and putting red masking tape on certain seats in order for social distancing. The only negative part is that the interior has an odor so we stayed outside at all times. We even got to see dolphins! A very pleasant trip, plus at $10 per person and $30 per small car, it is a great value.

Really fun

By Brian J |

While one member of the group felt a little sea sick the rest enjoyed it immensely. It was a beautiful day to be out on the water, and everyone onboard was super helpful.

Too much ferry for too little time

By Jean T |

The ferry itself is fine- nice way to travel and it was not over crowded. Make your reservation ahead of time! Nice day to sit outside and catch the breeze. People were good about wearing mask. We arrived too late to get a seat on the shuttle into town so we kind of 'winged it ' with another couple and got a taxi into Cape May (shared the $20 fare). The shuttle stops at the welcome center making that place very congested and still a few blocks from the shopping area and the beach. Taxi dropped us at Congress & Perry Streets and we arranged to be picked up at the same location. Cape May itself is a lovely town- homes and gardens are beautiful but it was too crowded with people - many of whom were on bikes dodging car traffic. No time to wait for a lunch table- every place was quite crowded. We only had about 2.5 hours before we had to get back for the taxi. Be aware that the ferry is about 5 or 6 miles from the town of Cape May so you either need to bring your own car or bike or take the shuttle or taxi. It is not walkable.

Amazing customer service

By Steve |

Superb customer service from the team at Cape May Lewes Ferry - they go above and beyond the norm, massively refreshing when so many companies treat customers as a nuisance! A great experience all round, highly recommended.

Adventure on the high seas , below decks

By Clif R |

had an emergency and needed to get to New Jersey. decided to make a reservation, thank goodness as the first ferry to NJ was full. it can be beautiful with dolphins jumping and occassionally a whale siting. this day was rough due to the weather , they handled it well and the ship has very good seats and tv's running with a bar and snack bar. came in right on time.

My Rig on a Ship

By Wren |

If you haven't already tried the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, I highly recommend the ride. To avoid the perilous I-95 traffic, enroute from NJ to all points south, I take my 30' RV across the Delaware Bay. Skip the turnpike, Baltimore, and DC! It cost me $52 one way. It's worth it to forego the white-knuckled drive.

Fares and schedules vary.

Ferry is the way to go!

By Bob J |

We have used the ferry to go Lewes to Cape May, and also Cape May to Lewes. Very affordable and pleasant boat ride.

Fun and friendly day trip

By Susan H |

We took the ferry just for fun from Cape May to Lewes and back. We left our car at the Cape May Terminal parking lot, no parking fee. The crew is so friendly and eager to make your ride a fun time. There was lots of birds to see enroute, including Eagles. There is a small cafe and bar onboard. This would also be awesome for a sunset cruise and the price is so reasonable. If you want to bring your car, I would suggest making an online reservation and arriving early. Even in a 20 mph wind, we had a smooth ride. There are plenty of indoor and outdoor seats.
Great trip.

Unable to drive

By Elaine B |

Visiting in Bethany, fell off bike, tore rotator cuff. Could not drive. How to get home? Friends from Morristown came to get me in Cape May, friends from Bethany drove me to Lewes but how to navigate getting on and off the ferry? And would there be a last minute reservation? Tillie in Customer Service, made arrangements for Chris to drive my car on and Steph, in the orange vest, to come aboard, drive me off, and wait with me until my friends arrived. It was all most efficient, but the best part was how friendly, kind and caring Tillie, Chris and Steph were. Thank you all. BTW, it was a beautiful day and the ride across was lovely.

Great Way to Cross from Cape May to Lewes.

By DeeBee1011 |

When visiting Delaware from New Jersey a great way to get there is by taking the Ferry. Ideally book tickets in advance, drive up to the Ferry terminal at Cape May and board the ferry. The Ferry is efficiently run. On board one has a lot to drink and eat so the crossing is very enjoyable. Adequate seating both, inside and on the deck.

The best of travel

Great service -smooth ride in stormy weather, the best way to go! Reliable, good food on both ends and on the boat.

Very good. Better weather would have been nice.

Lousy weather, foggy. Nice ride. "Grain" bar restaurant in Delaware was very nice. Crew on board very friendly. Would do it again on a nicer day & more time.

I found the Cape May-Lewes Ferry on TA and it added a very relaxing and fun morning to our vacation trip. Our Monday morning day in mid September was warm, but not hot; calm water with no wind; and only a moderate crowd on the ferry. We arrived a hour early and had time to browse the grounds and the gift shop before our call to begin boarding. Once we were aboard, we climbed the stairs to the top deck and enjoyed the beautiful views, took photos and made the most of the ride. We love a road trip and I am always on the lookout for ways to give my husband a break from driving. The ferry was perfect for us. Everything about the ferry from the terminal to the boat was clean and well kept. Thanks ya'll for a great ride.

Like a mini sea cruise

By Exnortherner |

We arrived about 30 min before departure. Drove car on to ferry. Sat on top deck for about an hour enjoying the sun and fresh air. Spent last half hour inside lower deck. Very comfortable seating with food available. Very quick and efficient loading and unloading of cars. Delightful way to spend 90 minutes. Return trip was just as comfortable and the captain even sighted a whale, which he pointed out to us.

Ruined

By Emily S |

The boat was nice and all but our experience was somewhat derailed by the attitude of one of the employees. They were rude to us and it was super bumming. Also we came in July and there was little to no COVID regulations, none of the employees were wearing mask nor were there distances placed between people. But beside that it was kinda fun.

Above and beyond helpful service

By Maryann F |

Staff was exceptionally helpful assisting with reservation change when we had a medical emergency with our dog. Their assistance ensured that we could get to our vet before the office closed for the day. Many thanks to the kind cmlf staff.

Great

By judithantoinette |

This operation knows what it’s all about! From efficient check-in to unloading everything went perfectly and to the minute. The boat is comfortable with good seating both inside and out. No whales or dolphins but a scenic 90 minute trip across the bay. Highly recommend if you need to get across.

70th Birthday

By Michael E |

We drove from Maryland to Cape May and decided to take the ferry from Cape May to Lewes when we were going back home to Maryland. We made reservations on a mobile phone the day before and it was very easy. When you arrive before your time you show your reservation and get staged in a line. We went in the terminal to use the restrooms and see the gift shop. When you drive on the ferry you park your car and then you can go on one of two decks that are open and also have enclosed areas with seats. It was a blustery day so we stayed inside mostly. The ferry did rock back and forth because of the choppiness of the water on the Bay. It is a trip of about 85 minutes and then you get off in Delaware and we continued our journey home. The cost is very reasonable, you pay for the vehicles and also the occupants. There is a senior discount.

With my boyfriend on the 4th holiday. The ferry was great. Left on time, staff was nice

By courtney h |

I just wanted to say thank you to the customer service! I left an email after business hours on July 2nd asking someone to call me! And they did! I was able to change my reservation and my trip was saved. I was also impressed with the crew the day of and how clean the ferry was.

The window washers spoiled our return cruise.

By Classynana |

Our recent experience on the ferry was so pleasant from Lewes to Cape May, and the weather was perfect. However, on the return sailing from Cape May, people were seated outside in front of the windows and enjoying the cruise when a crew was instructed to wash those windows on the outside. We we all told to move, the cleaner they were using had a strong, unpleasant smell, and it was just plain RUDE! Someone asked one of the window washers why they were doing that during the cruise and were told it was the Captain's orders. Everyone wondered why it was so important to wash those windows, and actually, the windows were left with a bunch of streaks and looked better before they were "washed". It was not a good impression, and I hope it will not happen again.

Love the ferry!

By Lisa D |

We take the CMLF at least once a month. Most trips we bring travel pillows and quilt throws and stay in our car. However if it's too hot or too cold we do go topside and sit in one of many available booths or seats. Keep an eye out for dolphins! There is also a gift shop, bar and cafe to purchase food and drink. We have never had a bad trip and the staff is always ready to answer questions and are nice and helpful. Since we take the ferry so often, I purchase a frequent ferry pack which is a savings from the original cost. The last 4 times I booked I made an error in booking and Sue Seager (customer service rep extraordinaire) researched, corrected and refunded my overpayment. I am grateful!

Disgusting food

By Robert C |

In the past I have had occasion to write several five star reviews regarding our experience on the Cape May Ferry. However, this time we were running late and were not able to get food before we arrived. We purchased two bagels on board, I can say Absolutely hands down the we’re the worst bagels we ever had eaten they must have been three days old, and they cost us six bucks. I can’t speak for Delaware, but It is almost impossible to get a bad bagel in New Jersey, the Cape May Ferry Food Buyers must at the very minimum get retrained on how to buy bagels. I’m not saying someone from the food staff should be fired, but a 30 to 60 day unpaid suspension would be pretty reasonable. Based on our experience, I would recommend being very careful buying any food on the Cape May Ferry, prisoners probably eat better.

Law Enforcement

We checked in early and parked our vehicle into the proper lane. We went into the welcome center, used the facilities. We are a 70 year old couple married for 42 years. When we went back to the vehicle there was an orange tag with a do not remove sign. Shortly thereafter we were approached by an officer who went through both our glove compartment and our trunk. Why..we do not know. Then we had an officer who walked around the vehicle with a dog two times. Is this normal ?

Cape May- Lewes Ferry

By DM2016DM |

First time on a ferry this size. It was a fun ride 17 miles across the Delaware Bay on the way to Cape May., NJ. Beautiful sunset and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and plenty of room to walk around. Food was pretty good they have hot and cold items available. There are also bathrooms on board. Would take this ferry again, it did save us travel time and was scenic as well.

Simply Amazing

By Shantamr36 |

We paid $71.00 (car, 3 adults, 1 child)
Everything was deceit and in order.
We arrived early so that we could board first.
They have a nice restaurant and cafe inside along seating inside and out while you wait for departure.
Security checked all trunks.
Boarding and Exiting was a breeze.
Plenty of chairs onboard the ferry.
Seating both inside and outside. Plenty of standing room.
Small gift shop-bottom deck
Bar-top (outside) and bottom (inside)
Amazing views
Great relaxation
Perfect for for a nap
A little over an hour to arrive in Cap-May
We loved it.
Ability to bring pets aboard

Take the Ferry.

By happywaterdog |

The trip over to Cape May was uneventful but it's always great to get out on the water. Smooth sailing on calm waters. The trip back to Lewes was a bit more exciting on several levels. The wind and tide gave us that pleasant rolling stride (yup, waves) and the fog/rain kept the views to a minimum. Then! Captain announced "whale sighting port side" and he slowed down, did a circle and we all had a chance to see small whale fins cutting thru those waves. What fun! I would also commend his docking...not sure how he spun that big boat around like twirling a gal on the dance floor (nice job). Note: they are in process of upgrading all the boats but, if you have a chance, choose the Delaware ... more comfy than the New Jersey we rode on trip to the Cape.

Makes the journey pleasant

By podrozniczka60 |

We have used the ferry multiple times either walking on or with our car. Virtually every time we had a positive experience. When our children were younger we would do it just for the fun of “boat ride “. The terminals are friendly and the ferry is comfortable and reliable.

Round Trip

By Dean_Amy-2004 |

We did a round trip from Cape May. It saved a lot of time vs driving to Delaware and gave us a break from driving to boot. The entire operation ran smoothly and on time. They even have a FREE 9-hole mini golf course you can play while you wait on the NJ side. Food and souvenirs are available for purchase at the terminal and on the ferry.

Unexpected dolphin sightings

By kcheatom23 |

This a must do! We took the ferry from Lewes to Cap May. I especially enjoyed seeing the dolphins during our ferry ride.

Unexpected gem!

By craisher |

Stayed in the Hotel Rodney ( super staff, very good restaurant) right on Second Street Lewes— right on the street with lovely and friendly shops and restaurants. Ten minutes from Cape Henlopen Park with great flat hiking trails and access to the beach. Five minutes from the Cape May ferry; took the ferry to Cape May for a day. An absolutely wonderful place for a long off-season weekend. It was an unexpected pleasure! I plan to go back and try all the restaurants I missed and revisit the great shops and people!

Smooth sailing!

By Mike D |

As we base in Lewes, we have taken the ferry many times to Cape May for lunch or to visit relatives in other parts of Jersey. The Experience of enjoying the water go past with beverage in hand and a snack from the wide variety at the food concession is a no brainer compared to driving. Top deck outside or in the comfy cabin when the weather is not good. Hope the Increased volume we view on the ferry will cause more scheduled runs. Impossible to Enjoy dinner in Cape May and come back on the same day.

Exceptional kick off

By karen l |

The service at the Ferry, on and off the ferry kicks off a great start to any vacation. A special shout out to Sue who made our journey possible. Human kindness abound...we are not just thankful but grateful to you

Don't miss it!

By David E J |

Fun trip. The boats are very nice - better than other ferries I've been on. Staff is great. Excellent and efficient boarding process. Even if you're not driving, make a day of it and check out the town on the other side!

Great Trip

A great way to end our trip from VA to NJ. We got out and sat outside and enjoyed the breeze, a great orange creamsicle at the bar and amazing views.

Beautiful Ferry, beautiful ride!

By Desiree A |

On July 16 I took the ferry from Cape May, New Jersey to Lewes Delaware.

The Cape May- Lewes Ferry is more of a yacht than a typical ferry.

After I parked my car in the ferry, a very gracious man helped me bring my cat’s stroller upstairs. I was extremely greatful. Had he not helped me, I don’t know what I would have done!

The ride from Cape May to Lewes is about 1 & 1/2 hrs. but it’s a beautiful ride.
I couldn’t go inside because of Kayla (my cat) but they have a restaurant and bar.

If you’re driving south, it’s worth taking the ferry.

The only way to get from New Jersey to Maryland.

By Douglas B |

Heard about this ferry ride on the TV Show Aerial America and planned my driving tour around it. Highly recommended as long as the weather is clear.

Pickup and 25’ camper

By JJG |

Pickup towing 25’ camper. $94 for this “long”. After loading and when okay, left it to explore the ferry gift shop and enjoy sea air up top. Easy on and off.

PS. Arrived an hour early, parked where directed for wait, then went to restaurant for a drink.

Excellent overall experience.

Handicap accessibility

By victor h |

It's always a great way to travel on the ferry. Only issue is that there is no consideration for seniors who need space to get out of car.

As a retired 22-year US Navy officer I thoroughly appreciate the professional, safe, and spotless vessel operations by the Cape May - Lewes Ferry. Since 1964 45 million persons have travelled safely aboard the ferry service. The three ferry vessels are uber clean with Henlopen Ferry ad their newest vessel. The staff are excellent, friendly, and professional. Well done. BRAVO ZULU as we compliment Navy style! 👍🏽🇱🇷

Nice trip!

By Kdawg282 |

We took the ferry from Cape May to Delaware and had a good overall experience. They have a nice viewing area up top and bar as well! Overall good experience

Save yourself the stress.

By John H |

Going to Delaware from New Jersey, or return? Avoid the aggravation of I- 95. It's a nice break from sitting behind the wheel and fighting the traffic and the delays.

Second ever visit

By Escape783146 |

Only was on the ferry once before in the summer of 1964 when it was first put into service. Awesome trip, plenty of room, great service and amenities. I would highly recommend this ferry for everyone.

Best way to get from Lewes, DE to Cape May!

By Margaret B |

We wanted to travel to Cape May, NJ from Lewes, DE. Easy, peasy...went to the Cape May - Lewes Ferry about 2 months before, booked our reservation and voila! We had a very enjoyable ride, bringing our car with us. Lots of seating, Refreshments available for purchase. Comfortable and smooth.

A Different Way Home!

By Peggy P |

My friends and I decided to take the Ferry for a different way home to Pennsylvania. It was a very interesting, beautiful change of scenery in our trip home from the beach.

always on time

By bobragusa |

A great way to get from NJ to DE. Travel at least 6 times a year in all seasons and all conditions. They always try to squeeze you on an earlier boat if you arrive early. very accommodating

Great way to get to New Jersey

By Melanie in Delaware |

the ferry is great to get to/from New Jersey. It is relaxing and on board services are good. And, its fun for a summer evening out as well to be on the bay and experience fun bands like Glass Onion. Another great aspect of livng in this area!

Worth the time

By razayes |

Well worth the visit from Lewes De to Cape May Nj. Super organized and on schedule. Only issue with our visit was the lack of shuttle service to the May area of town. Had to Uber.

Day trip in del beaches

By Jermorg |

On a Tuesday in early July, I took this trip with my wife for a day trip from New Jersey to Delaware beaches and back.

On a beautiful day, we took off at 8 from cape May, we got to departure site 20 mins early, to ensure we could board. The ride was beautiful , though we left Cape May in a 80 degree morning, on open water it quickly became 10-15 degrees cooler with a breeze.

The ride was lasted about 80 mins, was smooth as glass, and very scenic. A very friendly crowd, numerous passengers were repeat customers, and enjoyed the scenery. A very natural trip, with many passengers riding over for a bike tour , departing from Lewes , and pedaling to Rehoboth for a lunch.

I have taken this ferry dozens of times, is well worth the ride. I have enjoyed whales frolicking in the wake of the ferry in September, that had crowds cheering their antics.

Well worth the trip!

Perfect!

By Sheila |

On Sunday, July 21, 2019, my husband and I had the pleasure of taking the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. We had a reservation for later in the afternoon but arrived early for the trip. We checked in only to find out they were completely booked. But they suggested we get in the “stand by” line. Luckily, we were able to get on the ferry that was about to leave. We hadn’t done this trip in probably 30 years. What a beautiful way to spend a Sunday afternoon! We walked around the decks looking over the bay occasionally sitting in one of the many seats provided. So much better than driving from Delaware to NJ!
If you have the opportunity to take the ferry, do it! Great for all ages. Beverages are available as well as rest rooms. Exiting the vessel was equally as efficient as entering. Highly recommend taking this journey. You won’t regret it!

Excellent trip. Organized, on time, comfortable. Crew was great and friendly, and announcements kept us all well informed. Shuttle to cape may from the landing was also great.

Fun way to Travel

By Mike M |

Fun way to travel from Lewes to Cape May. We brought our Morkie who was allowed to leave the car as long as he was on a leash and did not go inside where they were serving food. Arrive at least a half hour early with reservations in peak seasons. The terminals on both sides of the bay serve food and alcohol or coffee but breakfast sandwiches on the Lewes side are unavailable due to lack of help. The ferry itself (including the restrooms) were clean and there was a nice breeze while sitting on the top deck. Even on a calm sea day, there was a slight sway in the boat so if you do tend to get seasick, take appropriate action before hand and be careful while walking especially on the stairs. Staff was friendly and one guy gave ferry stickers to the kids.

Cape May Lewes Ferry

By Allie |

Love this ferry. I took it to travel to NJ to visit friends, and I have to say it was a positive experience. The terminal itself is very clean & safe. Staff are friendly and helpful. There are restrooms, a small restaurant and tons of seating area to wait. The actual ferry was ride was also a positive experience.

An Enjoyable Crossing

By Charles S |

On our east coast road trip my wife and I booked our car onto the ferry to travel from North Cape May New Jersey to Lewes Delaware. Upon arrival at the terminal we waited only 30 minutes in line until the vehicles were all security checked and our drive on loading commenced. The ferry crossing is a distance of 17 miles and took 90 minutes. Onboard there are many seat locations to choose from plus a small bar serving drinks and snacks. The day was sunny and clear and we really enjoyed the crossing as part of our ongoing trip. Recommended.

A great way to travel without leaving the water!!!

By Anne G |

The ferry doesn't cut off time, but it certainly cuts down on the driving to be done, and accesses the beautiful Garden State Parkway!

Went to Cape May for the day

By K F |

My brothers and I took the ferry from Lewes DE to Cape May. Boys trip hitting up a couple of brewery’s the ferry was clean and on time easy on and off. The only low mark was no wheelchairs to be found.

Nice day. Beautiful weather. Lousy service.

By bjmilligan8 |

The ferry from cape May to Lewes was a horrible experience. We had reservations on September 1. We finished our activities early and tried to reschedule to an earlier cruise. We could not as it was booked. We arrived.before the 4:30 crossing at 4. They said if they had room, we could go early. We were in a lane for just this. After all cars were boarded, we watched as a pick up arrived for the 6 trip and was taken as well as 2 cars in front of us. We were supposed to be first in line for the 6. They took the last cars first and we were last. Really sucks. No appreciation. Think we will drive next time

Poor

By Dakota P |

I wish I could give this a 0. We paid for 3 large vehicles for a round trip voyage from Lewes and back. We had 6 kids and a pregnant woman traveling with us. The return trip ferry was 3 hours late then on top of that the parking crew wanted to park my cousins 80,000 dollar vehicle right on the rail to the point it would scrape up the rims and so tight to another truck they pulled in over the yellow line his pregnant wife couldn’t even get out to use the bathroom. They adjusted enough for her to get out and we’re berated by one parking employee then had another one come up 45 minutes later for to try and berate us again. It was nonsense and if they did their job right the first time the vehicle wouldn’t have needed to be moved to begin with. My family was in the black SUV pictured below.

Don’t go inside if you fear Covid!

By Trekking |

Few people wore masks inside. I was terrified of going in, but had to use the rest room. Here I am, less than a week later with a respiratory bug, isolating so I don’t spread my illness.

The ferry would have been a delightful trip if their rules for masks were enforced. I doubt we’ll be going again during this or any pandemic.

Great way to cross the Delaware Bay

By 785jimwilson |

I had not done this since I way much younger. My wife had never done this. We drove to Cape May. Stayed overnight and caught the Ferry the next morning to Lewes, DE. Spectacular day. Sunny and bright. Sat on the top deck and enjoyed the ride and the view.

I love to travel on a ferry

By twomartinilunch |

It has been years since a traveled on this ferry. The entire experience was wonderful Efficient boarding, security was present but not intrusive, and once onboard the staff was very helpful. Ferry travel is the best. I would go out of my way to take this again.

Cape May Ferry

By annielomo |

This is a great ferry and I have been on many. The boat is clean and up to date. The inside seating is comfortable and there’s plenty of outdoor seating. We usually take the ferry from Cape May to Delaware to visit Rahoboth Beach or to shop at the outlets. The ride is so relaxing. If you want an enjoyable summer afternoon or early morning ride across the bay jump on the Cape May Lewes Ferry. You’ll be glad you did.

Beautiful Ride

By Beavergirl70 |

Two couples took the ferry on a late summer’s day. Directions to ferry were easy to follow as was the boarding procedure. Comfortable ride with great views. Time passed quickly. Comfortable indoor lounging area with air conditioning. Enjoyed time at both terminal buildings as well and took advantage of shuttles from terminal to town to back to terminal. Enjoyable trip in all aspects.

Nice trip

By NancyS |

Enjoying the Jersey shore for a lifetime and never took the ferry, was pleasantly surprised how easy it is. Easy on/easy off. booked the same day. Weather was great and it was a nice way to spend an hour. Would recommend for all the shore visitors!

Fun Trip

By pfefmeister |

We love to incorporate ferries into our cross country trips, and this is a good choice when navigating down the East coast. Two seniors and a car, one way, is $51. The trip was smooth and went quickly. Well organized, we booked online the day before no problem - and it was a Friday n August. If you choose not to take the ferry over to Delaware, the drive around Wilmington is your only other option. Try it, you’ll like it.

Great Boat Ride

By Wayne D |

The purpose of our voyage was just to go for a boat ride on a beautiful afternoon. Our trip originated in Cape May and we didn't even get off the ferry in Lewes. The ferry is comfortable, clean and appears to be very well maintained. If on a hot day you are looking for a cheap way to spend 4 hours on the water, it's hard to beat this.

Lots of beer and no food not a good combination

By Constance T |

We did the brewery shuttle excursion and honestly thought it was just not planned well. The ferry ride and the shuttle transportation were very good. The driver for the shuttle was very friendly, even offering to take the group onto the next brewery sooner rather than later but.. We started the day having to check in at 9:45. The first stop was Cape May Brewing. The ad for the event said there was a tour (there wasn’t). We were told that we could pack our own lunches but food would be available within walking distance. The Flight Deck Diner is within a third of a mile but when we called to order told us they were too busy to take our order. The second stop was Behr Brewery. There was one bartender and few selections and two more hours with no food available nearby. The third stop was Cold Spring Brewery. Beautiful location but limited beer selection and only bagged chips to eat. Caught the 6:00 return Ferry and had a ham and cheese on the ride back. We enjoyed the day and will consider bringing our car next time to plan for some meal along the way. We were encouraged by our shuttle driver to leave a constructive review so here it is. There was plenty of time to include a lunch stop for the group. Cape May is beautiful!

Wonderful!

By Cynthia K |

We were on our way from Cape May New Jersey to Cape Henlopen State Park in Delaware & I found this ferry. What a time saver!

It was easy to book. I did it on line about a week before we left.
We were pulling a small trailer & they do take RVs. Some very BIG ones!
We got a AAA discount.
Before our ferry time we went to the Terminal to look around. Everything is clean including the bathrooms. They have food & local information.

It was very easy to get on board - just do what the employees tell you.
Before you get on board they bring by the canine patrol & look in your trunk & RV.
After getting on board you can stay in your car or exit the vehicle & go on deck.
We went on deck & unfortunately my mobility challenged husband had to take the stairs. The elevator was not working in the ship we took. He made it up & down, but he was slow.

We enjoyed the crossing very much. It was a beautiful day & the waves weren't bad. We saw a small pod of dolphins.

We disembarked & made a left hand turn out of the parking lot & Cape Henlopen was about 1/2 mile down the road!!

It was great! All the employees were nice & we had a wonderful time! :)

Popeye the sailor man

By Steve K |

Like anything else plusses and minuses.

A nice trip on the water. Prices were very inexpensive and free parking right next to the terminal in Lowes.

But...

Seats on the perimeter of the ship were hard metal and very uncomfortable.

The ferry we took to Cap May did not return to Delaware. We had to wait over an hour to board another ferry to return.

A lot of walking for a guy with a cane.
Based on all of the above would not do it again, but at my age wanted to try it

Many times!

Ive been taking the Ferry since 1976.I love the trip. Its always pleasant. No Issues.Highly recommend this.

This ferry helped our trip between NJ and Delaware - only 85minutes and nice ride with great view of light houses in Lewes, Delaware and Cape May, NJ.

Easy to book your tickets on line. Very organized for loading. We got there early and enjoyed lunch alongside the water. The trip was enjoyable and we arrived right on time. We chose this ferry so we could avoid going near Philadelphia with the route 95 repair.

Absolutely delightful ferry ride.

The staff and service were helpful, informative and pleasant.

This trip was highly rated.

Great travel experience!

By deezmayer |

Only way to travel from NJ to Delaware. Cuts down on miles, driving time and gas $.

Offers a senior rate or a discount for a AAA member. Ferry left on time on each trip--we even arrived early for our reservation and were allowed to board on the earlier ferry. Bar is open; do have sodas and water. The ferry terminals especially in Cape May have restaurants. Dine while you are waiting or after you dock; either way you look at it it is the only way to travel!

The best way to travel!

By hayleypl |

Even though this is technically just a way to get from one location to another, it felt like an attraction in itself when you have a car! It's an especially fun experience for kids. If you have car, be sure to check in early. Once you park your car on the ferry, you're free to roam around the boat. There are various places to sit outside or inside, a snack area, a gift shop, tables, etc. We also saw people sleeping in their cars, which was a great idea. Highly recommend if you're traveling between Delaware & NJ!

Ferry from New Jersey to Delaware

By vstanisz |

We had never been to Delaware so took the ferry as passengers from Cape May to Lewes. It was a much larger operation than we expected, room for 100 cars and passenger seats like airplane seats. There was a snack bar on board. It was a beautiful day on the water. Arriving in Lewes we took a Lyft from the ferry terminal to the Dogfish Head Brewpub (a little over $20 trip). There is a free shuttle and buses or you can bike it but it is quite a distance. Lots of shopping in Lewes and excellent Lobster meals at Mason's Lobster on the main street. We had planned on spending time in Cape May that same day but ended up spending all day in Lewes, never making it to Cape May where we have been before.

It's a fun way to go!

By tms215 |

It's clean, safe, and reasonable. An hour to or from NJ and really breaks up a longer trip. Well organized and friendly staff. Great restaurants in both terminals. Plenty of free parking and you can go to just hang out if you want. The ferry itself is huge so you can always get a spot. Lots of people without cars, just sightseeing for the day. Reservations are a must!

Great ride

By Julie C |

Just wanted to jot a quick thank you for a safe, enjoyable ride! Traveled at the beginning of Hurricane Ida, seas were extremely rough and we were all asked to remain seated when possible. Staff was super friendly, especially in the cafe, most travelers had masks. Have to add that the coffee was fantastic!! $2.50 for a large, but with free refills it was totally worth it!

Smooth ride on a gloomy post Christmas Day

By Justin W |

I enjoy taking the ferry between Lewes and Cape May. The trip on a gloomy day was a little rough but the trip was smooth and on time.

The staff could not be nicer on the Lewes side of the trip. The guys who organize the cars have their job down to a science and everyone got on the boat very quickly.

The woman who checked me in could not have been nicer and thanked me for my service to the fire service which I thought was very respectful ( I get a discount for being a fire fighter). The staff inside the building are just as nice from the guest service people to the restaurant staff.

The Lewes side of the ferry building was beautifully decorated for the Christmas holidays and made it very festive.

I really enjoyed the trip over. It was smooth sailing on a cloudy day and we got to Cape May in an hour and fifteen minutes.

Great trip and great service!

My view from the Cape May-Lewes Ferry

By Richard Outcault |

The cruise takes about 1 1/2 hours on a sunny day You can sit upon the upper deck and enjoy a quick bite to eat.It is not fancy but it is adiquite. When You get off you can see many quant shops but the prices may be a little bit cheaper than NY & NJ you must keep in mind that You are a tourist. It is very easy to get lost on the shores and You may have to take another long ride to get home.

Great Alternative To A Drive

By TTTravelers1 |

Peaceful sailing to avoid traffic and enjoy the sea birds.
Love a beautiful car ferry. On time & snacks & food.

Recommend highly.

By Douglas B |

Saw this ferry ride on Aerial America television show featuring New Jersey. We left Kentucky for historical driving tour and the only planned activity was driving the Jersey shore and taking this ferry to Delaware. We were not disappointed. Rode the July 4, 2023 - 12:00 p.m. one-way trip from Cape May to Lewes. Perfect weather. We arrived one hour before departure and were 10th or so in line to board. Boarded promptly and quickly. Rode the top floor for the breeze and view. One way trip was approximately 90 minutes. Got some great bird and dolphin photographs.

A Crossing Full of History Between Delaware and New Jer

By Pier Federico G |

I left Lewes, a city founded as Zwaanendael in 1631, considered the first Dutch colonial settlement in the territory of the future United States. I chose to take the ferry to Cape May on my way back to Boston, both to explore this region rich in history and to discover a less crowded alternative route.

The ferry was punctual, well organized and had wonderful ocean views. As a fan of The Blacklist, I couldn’t miss this step, even though I knew that the “Cape May” episode was not shot on location but at the Lawrence Beach Club in Atlantic Beach, NY.

On Cape May beach, I picked up three small pebbles as a souvenir, and I was lucky enough to spot dolphins playing around the wreck of the SS Atlantus in the morning waves. An unexpected and magical moment, making this crossing truly special.

I highly recommend this experience to anyone who wants to discover a unique corner of the American East Coast, steeped in history and impressive seascapes.

I started my journey from Lewes, originally known as Zwaanendael, established in 1631 and considered the first Dutch colonial settlement on what would become U.S. soil. I chose the Cape May-Lewes Ferry for my return route to Boston, both to explore this historically rich region and to take a less-traveled path.

The ferry was on time, well-organized, and offered stunning ocean views. As a fan of The Blacklist, I couldn’t resist a stop in Cape May, even though I knew the “Cape May” episode was actually filmed at the Lawrence Beach Club in Atlantic Beach, NY.

On the beach at Cape May, I picked up three small stones as souvenirs, and I was lucky enough to watch dolphins playing around the wreck of the SS Atlantus in the morning waves. It was an unexpected and magical moment, making this crossing truly special.

Great value.

Sunday night ferry over. Terminals are nice, well appointed and clean. Places outside to walk, play mini golf and eat or get a drink or meal. Honestly I was impressed by the amount of stuff to do. The sunset on this ride is incredible. Saw dolphins.

Great Ferry Ride

By redsnut1355 |

My wife and I recently did a day trip up to Lewes to travel on the ferry. We had a wonderful time riding the ferry across the Delaware Bay to Cape May. We didn't have the time to get off the boat and go into Cape May, but the boat ride back to Lewes was great. It was very relaxing and the folks that work there were great. We want to do it again when we have more time.

Great way to explore Delaware or Cape May

By tms215 |

If you are going for a day trip, forget the car. There are shuttles on both ends. It is clean and safe. There is food, water, and a full bar. The only reason it lost a star is that people wind up getting hammered and loud at the bar up top. I get it, they are on vacation, but at times can be annoying. Terminals at both ends are modern and clean. People at both ends to direct you efficiently. Well worth the money

Transportation AND an adventure!

By Sanny S |

Love love love! Rather than drive across the Delaware Memorial Bridge and down Rt 1, I chose to take a drive to Cape May and ride the ferry. Wonderful! The ferry workers were pleasant, and the ferry terminal was clean and accommodating. I had a reservation for a later ferry, but managed to squeak in on standby for an earlier ride.

My view from the passenger area (outside) was great. Breezy, warm, beautiful views. There were kids on board, and they seemed to be having a good time, too. There was also an indoor area to sit in airline-type chairs and relax. Food was available for relatively high prices (in my opinion). But, when you consider that everything must be loaded onto the ship, and then carted off again, I suppose it's not more expensive than it's worth. But really, who can't do without food for 90 minutes?

My return ride was just as fun. I had some time before the return trip, so I wandered through the gift shop in the terminal, then sat outside to watch the waves. On the return, I stayed in the automobile area near my car. A wave broke over the bow of the ferry! Imagine that. Again, a lovely trip.

Worth the drive!

By Leslie S |

While driving from FL to NJ we opted to take the scenic drive over the Chesapeake Bay up to the ferry. We made reservations the night before online, check in was an easy scan of the barcode on my phone, given a ticket and got in line. The ride itself was very nice! There is a small gift shop and food/snacks available for purchase. Very nice, worth the drive, would definitely recommend!

Fun, ferry ride from Delaware to New Jersey

By Lou P |

Very prompt, easy to maneuver, clean and enjoyable ferry ride to Cape May. Purchased tickets online before trip. Both ports were clean and offered many amenities.

No WiFi Onboard the ferry named SS New Jersey

By rwa |

Cloudy day, pleasantly smooth crossing, yet I was unable to log in to the free internet they advertise. It does seem to be an older vessel. Not as advertised.

Excellent Experience

By happytraveler34109 |

Ferry staff were very helpful. We were promptly boarded and had a lovely trip on a smooth and sunny day. All was well done. Being on time is critical. Seats were socially distanced and we wore masks, as did many others.

Mechanical issues caused problems

By blondpole |

On Sunday 8/18 due to mechanical issues, our 8:30 am ferry out of Cape May was cancelled. We were rescheduled on the 7:30 a.m. ferry. Aside from having to to leave for our trip an hour earlier, we had no issues that day. Loading and leaving was on time. The ride itself was pleasant and the ferry was nice and clean with and space and a variety of seating.

On Sunday 8/25 we were scheduled on the 6:45 p.m. out of Lewes. We arrived around 6:00 and checked in with no problems but weren't ever told it was delayed. We sat in the car until after 6:45 with no information. I finally went inside to find out what was going on. On my way in I encountered a staff security person and asked if he knew what was going on. He looked at me and said, "with what????". I replied the ferry was supposed to leave at 6:45 and it's now after 7:00. He said it was delayed and was on its way in now. I went to the desk where a lovely woman employee told me there was a problem with the loading platform earlier in the day and that is what caused the delay the rest of the day.

We didn't leave until 7:40 p.m. about an hour behind schedule.

I understand things happen, but to sit there for over an hour with no explanation is unacceptable. There was no communication about any delay at all.

If we were told there was going to be a delay at the booth when we checked in or at any other point, we would have at least waited inside the terminal instead of sitting in our car thinking we would be loading soon.

FUN TRIP

By Lee Ann H |

Was a neat experience, easy to get on and off even with our car. We saw a lot of dolphins. Great views, food on ship.

Rude staff.

By lisamarie826 |

If I could give ZERO STARS it’d be too much for the STAFF here. The rudest people I have ever met. Watched a woman roll her eyes at me when I was explaining my situation to her as I was already severely stressed. The ride is nice but the staff really make it horrible here. Especially the “ladies” who take your tickets at the booth.

A Nice One Time Experience

By Nemokota |

I took the ferry one way from Cape May to Lewes Delaware at 7 am on a summer Monday. It was good to feel the breeze while sitting on the open top level. There were not many people and being mid pandemic there were safety measures taken. Masks were required and they had arrows painted to keep the flow of passengers in one direction. I didn’t try any food or beverages.
There was nothing much to see and it was a little boring.
I can check it off my list now.

Loved it

By Rob M |

I try to go on this ferry a couple of times every year on a trip from south to north and back. It’s not always during the holidays or the summer or even weekends but I enjoy it so much, sort of like an extension to my trip. This time was during the holidays as well as on a weekend, the crowd may have been a bit different with more younger people with children and more pet owners than when I usually travel but it was just as enjoyable. The food although the “fastest” imaginable which is intended as a snack is always a treat as we watch the water as we eat and talk. We try to get there early so that we can get a table which are all next to a window. All in all I would recommend this mode of travel to anyone going from DE to NJ and or back. Whether you’re on foot, with a bike or in a vehicle, you won’t regret the adventure! It’s a tiny thing, I know, but it’s nice.

Perfect little trip

By KAH_ |

This was our first time taking the ferry, and it was such a pleasant experience! The staff is extremely friendly and efficient. There’s plenty of seating inside or on the top deck of the ferry or you are able to stay in your car if you wish. Highly recommend!!!

Enjoyable boat ride

Such a quiet peaceful way to travel to Delaware from New Jersey whether on foot driving or even pulling a camper they travel at a slow steady pace so time to enjoy the view

Summer at the Cape 2019

By egdrampro |

Driving to Cape May was a pleasant 1 1/2 drive from my home. The evening departure cruise was perfect with the sun going down on the water, wonderful. Everything was clean, affordable and delightful with public seating inside and outside the double deck ferry. A day trip with plenty to do in Delaware.

Easy passage between Delaware and New Jersey

By dese2 |

We used this ferry to go to Cape May. We preordered our tickets online. That process was easy and worked well.
We arrived early as instructed. Cars line up before being directed onto the ferry. Car trunks are checked by officials. I don't know what they were looking for!
When pulling onto the ferry just follow directions of the crew. Once parked you can exit your car and head on deck to the lounge or upstairs for outside seating.
There were television screens indoors but the program on was not of interest. There was plenty of seating when we were onboard.
There are refreshments and a bar for alcoholic drinks.
Exiting was easy too. Very orderly with crew directing folks off the ferry.
All in all, a good trip.

They take care of you

By Albert W |

Got a text at 1230 am ferry had mechanical problems it would be a 3 hr delay but luckily they had room for 4 more and I got on ended being only 1 hour delay great communication plenty to eat drink And do while on it

Nice Ride

By Ricmar60 |

The nice and easy way to get from south New Jersey to Delaware (or the opposite direction), is this ferry. You can book a specific trip online. They are very organized an friendly. The ferry has a food concession for your enjoyment, and in addition, they have facilities at the land terminals. An 85 minute trip.

Once Is Enough

By pjsubway |

I guess this is fun for the novelty, but it doesn’t save any time (and definitely not money) if you’re traveling beyond the immediate area of Lewes or Cape May. The ticket pricing is a bit weird, with the special rates (AAA, first responders) being exactly the same as the regular ones when booked online. Why bother to list them? It wasn’t really a bad experience but not worth going out of your way for.

Yes, we do believe in ferries

By MDhereandthere |

We've taken the ferry many times over the past 30 years, and have always enjoyed it. It's a fun trip and makes a good "getaway" start to a vacation.

Ferry to Lewes

By Gpeifer |

11 Years traveling to Bethany area and this was our first time taking the Ferry. Easy reservation. Had to get there 30 minutes early. Trip by Ferry adds an hour overall, but weather was great, just sorry the kids didn't see any dolphins or whales. If you want a break from the highway..this is a great change.

No accommodations made for significantly disabled seniors even after reservation request

By Mary H |

I was traveling with two disabled seniors, which can be more challenging and may result in late arrivals (even though I keep making our driving time shorter..). One of my seniors is so disabled that unloading for handicap service via the passenger walk-on was not an option. When I made the reservation, I contacted the office to ask questions about being loaded towards the front of the boat to allow my seniors to still be able to get a view from our RV. I was told that they should be able to accommodate our request as long as we arrived 45 minutes - 1 hour prior to departure. We arrived ~55 minutes prior to departure. We were given the same message at check-in - let the staff know when we pulled up in the line and they should be able to accommodate us. When we pulled up in line, the staff let me know that no accommodations would be met (it was not that busy, though there were a few other RVs). Our RV was parked in the middle-back of the boat with almost no view of even the sky, The sides of the carport deck are quite high, so there was not even a view out the sides.
I understand that staff may not be able to do much, but false lip service should not be shared prior to the ride. If no accommodations will be made, indicate that. If we were told that we needed to be there 1.5 hours prior to departure (and that it wouldn't interfere with the prior sailing) we would have done so. I could easily go wander the boat myself (along with my two well-behaved basenjis - love that they were allowed up on deck), but was not able to provide my disabled seniors with even a view on what may be their last opportunity to experience the ride. If one is too disabled to use the handicap access via the passenger terminal, this will just be a ride without scenery. At least there wasn't road noise.

Fun ride!!!

By Travelling Paws |

Longest ferry I've ever been on. Our boarding time was for noon but we got there earlier and they let us on an hour sooner. That was a bonus!!! A 90 minute ferry ride was pretty sweet. We stopped and chatted with a couple of nice ladies as they saw Woogie and had to come over. After our chat we went to get a drink. A drink on a ferry. Another sweet moment. Unloading off the ferry was very quick. These guys and gals that work the ferry know what they are doing...
Thank you for a great experience!!!

Way better than I thought!

By Ja P |

Way better and more fun than I thought!! Boarding was easy, kinda cool actually. I didn't know they had lounges, food, beverages and a bar! Lots of room to walk around. The views were amazing. I will say though, being out in the middle of the ocean's bigger waves, the rocking of the boat did make me seasick the higher up I was, so I had to go down to the 1st floor to stare at water to readjust. I will take my Dramamine next time! Crew moves you right along though, no time to be wasted getting off. Easy peasy! Loved this short boat trip on our big trip we were on!!

Great When It Runs

By John P |

We traveled for the first time on the Cape May Lewes Ferry and it was just out luck that one of the ferrys broke down. We were rescheduled at a later time the same day and also a later return. It required us to adjust our plans somewhat but it worked out. The trip was exciting and very well organized. It beats driving and takes about 90 minutes. Try it, you will have fun!

Harry is awesome!

By Zabel P |

I absolutely enjoyed our trip. This isn’t my first time on a ferry but it is with my vehicle and family. Harry helped me with questions and gave me so much information about the ferry’s. When the bar opens, the staff and food available. Even told me about the upper deck when it opens. Thank you Harry!

Cape May Lewes ferry ride.

Me and my husband went on our first ferry ride here. Had a great time and plan on doing again next year.

Not very accommodating

By Readsalong |

Travel with my dogs and any time I have asked to have my car in a specific area for shade or air flow, the crew has been very accommodating…until today. The gentleman was also very terse. While we are placed in the shade we are also against the housing for the engines, making it warmer on an already warm day. Next time I shall be requesting these accommodations while making my reservations. Call me Karen if you will, but the comfort of my animals in the summer heat is a concern.

Great day trip

By rageisman |

What an efficient way to see another beach town and state. For us ferries both there and back left right on time. Saw dolphins following the ferry. Some of us have motion sickness issues and it wasn't bad at all. Beautiful sunset to watch on the return trip from Cape May. We did the combined ferry/shuttle ticket into Cape May and it was well worth it. Would recommend this day trip if in Delaware.

Nice trip if not a bit rocky when there was no chop on the water

By Yetanotherroadtrip |

The ferry was fine... food choices on board could have been better considering there is a restaurant attached to the terminal - better than stale pretzels and soggy french fries. Security was higher than expected - they checked under the cars with mirrors. Price is reasonable and they have an AARP/AAA discount. But the boat did rock quite a bit considering there was almost no chop. It could be the winds or configuration of the boat as well. I would use it again.

Susan

By GSB |

On October 6, 2019, I was on the ferry coming from Lewes on the 1:45. The ride was rocky and I was laying on my husband with my eyes closed trying to keep my motion sickness down. Susan came by and asked how I was doing because I look like death. 😊. She explained to me how ear plugs might help me with motion sickness. She offered me one that I immediately used and it helped within five minutes. Susan also talked with my husband, daughter and I about the rides, fairs, and of course, motion sickness! She was so kind, helpful and knowledgeable. I wanted to give her a big thank you again and let CMLF know also.

Bikers beware

By GoingPlacesWanderlust |

There is no customer service — they tell you contact them via email - which I did and guess what you never get a response! Not even a generic- were sorry email - no acknowledgment at all! Complain on the ferry you just get passed around and get no where! So if that is how corporate is then I understand where the staffs attitude comes from! We took bikes to ride around the bike paths of cape Henlopen state park. We arrived very early and purchased our tickets, as this was our first time. We were directed to the loading zone where two police offers where stationed — they told us to wait there. We did - we waited and waited —- cars all started to line up. Another couple came after us with bikes too. Everyone is in air conditioned cars and we are standing with our bikes on the hot black parking lot. Two motorcycles pulled up and were directed through the cars and where flagged right on the ferry — we still waited — expecting to be next - - as we were told we would board 1st - as the bike racks are easily accessible. The ticket seller told us this - the police officer told us this. Then they started to flag the cars on — the police finally told us to go over and wait till they flag us on. We waited till all the cars, trailers, trucks where on — they pack them in there too. All in all we have been waiting for 45 minutes. We got on and I said - where is the bike racks? We just purchased two not so cheap brand new ebikes. “You can’t get to them now” - he said - “you should have gotten on first”. I said we where here waiting this whole time — the police told us to wait and no one said otherwise. The very, very, very rude gentleman and I use that term loosely said - “you weren’t where you were supposed to be.” I said well we saw you put the motorcyclist on so why didn’t we go after those two? He didn’t really know what to say at this point because he knew that I was right and we saw motorcycles get on before us proving we were there the whole time! He said “we don’t have time for this and my job is to park cars. So move out of the way” Once again I asked were where we supposed to put the bikes? He said and his exact words were “throw them on the ropes”. At that statement - I did get mad and told him these were not cheap bikes that you just throw around. He later denied he said that but the other couple confirmed that was his exact words! We placed our bikes up on the ropes — there was nothing to secure them to and we couldn’t lock them. This experience was awful and I didn’t even want to have to take the ferry back again. But didn’t have much choice. If there is no one’s job to direct bicycles and walk on’s then they shouldn’t sell tickets as such. I had a ticket and paid for my passage like the cars and should be at least treated with respect and not like an after thought or worst yet a bother and not someone’s job!? I would have given zero stars — However I am happy to report that the return trip was a totally different experience - they announced when it was time for the bikes to be put on - they let us all get on and secure our bikes in the supplied bike racks - We were on first and were able to get situated. Night and day experience —- so beware of your bringing on bikes!!

On the rocks bar & grille at the Lewes ferry terminal

if you want a place to go after a hot day at the cape and enjoy a fat juicy burger,
On the rocks is the place to go. Staff is great, views are great and your dog is welcome with ice water in a bowl. The grapefruit and key lime crushes are the best!

Awesome Day

By Mary H |

We use the ferry for our yearly trip to the Cape May/Wildwood area. Easy on-line reservations. This was the first time I used the little cafe area. Cool morning, so the coffee was an added bonus, and good. If I remember correctly, there were free refills as well.

Mixed review

By Kevin F |

Ride over to Lewes and back was nice. Inside the A/C is cool. But ferry from 1980 showing its age with rust everywhere. For some reason many boats were cancelled on last Sunday.9/18 No info available on trolley shuttle which we rode after being told we needed DART tickets. Nice walk in Lewes

The ferry is perfect…the outlets not so much.

By Jody R |

The staff for the ferry is friendly, efficient and conscientious. The boat is comfortable and very clean. Totally a wonderful experience. The only disappointment was heading to the outlets on the DART bus system. We wasted probably an hour and a half trying to manage the bus system. The drivers were not helpful with the schedule information and routes. Also, the stores are on both sides of a super busy highway. I would say enjoy beautiful downtown Lewes and forget about the outlets.

No shuttle and rude service

By HereWeGooo |

Beware! The shuttle to Cape May is not running and was not mentioned on their website. We woke up early, drive a distance only to discover signs that there’s no shuttle. I waited to speak to the desk clerk about other transportation options and the first thing out of the UNmasked desk clerk was “Do you have a mask with you. Put it on.” in a very rude tone. We were aware of the requirement ahead of time to wear our mask on the ferry itself. We dutifully wear our masks when asked but politeness is always appreciated. (Desk clerk was blonde haired middle age lady. I say this since perhaps there are other polite clerks who work there.) Her rudeness made our decision an easy one. We turned around and left. I feel bad for all of the New Jersey businesses who lost our money due to her unhelpful attitude and rudeness, not to mention the ferry company itself.
On a more positive note, we rode the ferry numerous times in the past and enjoy the ferry ride and the towns of Cape May and Wildwood. If you’re willing to subject yourself to the bully and a 6 mile walk to Cape May (since shuttle isn’t running) you will likely enjoy the boat ride.

A great way to travel between Lewes and Cape May

By Steve |

My family and I were vacationing in Rehoboth Beach and decided to visit Cape May. The Ferry was a very convenient way to travel to Cape May. The crew was very professional and efficient in loading and unloading the vehicles. It was a very enjoyable ride.

Great restaurant at ferry terminal!

By vicki s |

Surprisingly good restaurant at ferry terminal, the Look Out on second floor, great water views. We had an excellant meal. approx 4 choices of seafood, meat, poultry, all were very good. Caeser salad got rave reviews. Some very cool drinks, one served in a bird glass. Do make reservations. This is a destination, not a quick meal while taking the ferry.
Lots of pumpkin decor, tic tac toe etc outside on ground level for kids.

On our trip from New Jersey to Delaware, we took the Cape May -Lewis Ferry. The workers guiding us to the ferry were so polite and helpful. Once on the ferry, we went upstairs to a huge lounge with tables and nice seating. It was great to have a snack bar and bathrooms, for the long ride. I sat outside for a while, shopped in the little gift shop and watched a little TV. You need to have your sea legs if your going to walk around, because it does sway a bit. Overall, it was a great experience and one I wouldn't have wanted to miss.

Excellent Service, Beautiful Ride

By bff |

We took the ferry as part of our return trip from Ocean City, MD to Brooklyn, NY. It really broke up the ride and we got exceptional ocean views and multiple dolphin spottings! The ferry personnel were exceptionally nice - we had accidentally booked our ticket for the wrong day, but they got us onto the ferry anyway as standby passengers. Thankfully, there was room for our car on the boat and we had a great trip!

Enjoy every minute!

By gary |

We look forward to our Twice or more Ferry crossings on the Cape May Ferry, especially since the make over. Very good food now on and off the ferry ! So enjoyable to sit and watch the sea, birds, and coastline go by. Also to be able to go by the I95 Baltimore - Washington area safely !

Fun day trip!

By sirrand1 |

I was staying in the Rehoboth/Dewey Beach area and decided to take the Ferry for a day trip over to Cape May. I took the early, 8:45am boat and returned on the 4:30pm ship. It's a great ride, very comfortable, with lots of open deck views, or the alternative of air conditioned comfort if you prefer. We saw a lot of dolphins, who seemed to enjoy showing off for us. Had a great trip!

Great time

By Diane |

Whenever traveling we try to incorporate the Ferry going north or south. Its clean, on time, friendly and very organized. Snacks & food are plenty. The cost of the trip is reasonable. Sometimes you get to see dolphins and other wildlife. You get to relax instead of dealing with traffic.

This ferry boat is very clean. They offer delicious freshly squeezed orange or grapefruit crushes at the outside deck bar.

Great ferry!

By pat l |

We went on the ferry because we thought it would be lovely to be out on the water and see the shorelines as we crossed from DE to NJ. The fog and rain sure put a stop to that!

The ferry ride was still great. This ferry has a pretty good little snack bar with hot dogs and such to snack on. There were plenty of seats the day we got there, just not at tables.

We had a ferry reservation for 4 something and arrived early so they put us on the earlier ferry since there was space. That was awesome!

Part of our Florida to Ocean City NJ trip

By msdet1529 |

A well planned trip can save you time and headaches when crossing the Delaware.

We made reservations a while back, while planning our getaway to NJ for a family wedding for next Friday. A week at the Jersey Shore before the wedding, in Ocean City is convenient and this ferry ride was an 80 min awesome trip. We got there a little over an hour, checked in, showed our reservation slip and ID and parked our truck on line. We got there early for Our 2:45 departure so We went inside to grab a quick bite and listened to the PA announcements for further directions. The sandwiches at the restaurant were awesome!!! I had the Philly cheese steak with peppers and onions and my wife had the double smash cheeseburger. We both upgraded to tater tots. Both dishes were large, flavorful, and tasty. Indoor outdoor seating.

Driving on board the ferry was flawless, rows of vehicles lined up tight and we went to the upper decks and sat and relaxed. Snack bar, adult beverages, and souvenirs can be purchased. Plenty of seats inside or outside.

Exiting the ferry was done row by row, section by section. Smooth, safe, professional process!!! There is a procedure. It is done correctly!!!
Smooth sailing!!! Safe travels!!!

Nice trip

By Roam209680 |

If you are in either Cape May or Lewes, Delaware, it is worth the trip. My only complaint is there aren't many crossings. You can't stay late in the evening, the last ferry out of Cape May was 6pm. We would have lived to stay longer in Cape May.

Smooth sailing

Safety is also #1
Can't wait until next year!

Relaxing way to travel. I enjoyed the experience which was low stress.

By Karen |

Recommend booking ahead and on -line. I was on hold for a long period of time when I called to make a reservation. The ferry was crowded even though it was late September.

Great experience, but don’t rely on services

By Redbudian1 |

Our experience on the Cape May Lewes Ferry was very nice. Everyone from the people who checked us in to the marine services guys to the police were friendly and professional. The only thing that would have been nice is that the restaurants would have been open (or warn us if they are closed due to a private event). When services are advertised, people depend on them. You are stuck in the complex without many options.

Cape may lewes ferry

By Thomas P |

Dont get me wrong. The people running the ferry do a great job at making the ferry punctual, comfortable and safe, but it is very time consuming. You have to get there 1 hour early and the trip itself takes a little over an hour, all to travel just 16 miles.

I know it is for transport but what a trip on a sunny warm day

By Justin W |

I know that this is just a ferry, but I have to tell you that on a warm sunny day, there is nothing like sitting on the deck of the ferry and watching the bay go by. We even got to see dolphins swim by the ferry and that was really cool,

The people who work here are so nice and the most professional bunch of people that I have worked with in transportation. The whole staff from the people that check you in to the people working the concession stands to the guys who wave you out are the nicest people and really look like they care about their jobs and the people (ie us) who take the trip.

I really enjoy this voyage going both to Cape May and to Lewes.

I'm not one to leave reviews, but I felt the need to in order to express my disdain for the Capw May - Lewes Ferry.

I had booked for a two-way trip so for a vacation. I get a call the day before that my 12:00 ferry was canceled and I was bookee for the 1:45. That was fine by me, I understand accidents happen.

However, a day before my return trip, I got a phone call saying that yet again my ferry was canceled for 1:45, and that I'd be booked for the 3:15. My friend who also took the ferry didn't even get a phone call about this, and I had to inform him or else he wouldn't of known. I find that very unprofessional, but that isn't all.

I always try my best to make it to the terminal an hour before to ensure my spot is still reserved. I check in as usual and ten minutes later, I find out that the ferry id being delayed another hour.

This is my first and worst experience with this ferry service, and I'll have to think twice next year when I book my trip about if I really want to deal with this company again.

This has been nothing but an absolute inconvenience the whole trip, how can someone make a schedule when all they do is push time slots around like it's nothing?

I have not the slightest clue.

Very favorable experience

We were greeted by an extremely nice man named Harry Fesler. He was accommodating, friendly and made us feel very welcome. The ride was smooth and we enjoyed the view in a comfortable sitting room and had coffee and danish. Both of which were very fresh. Very favorable experience.

Great Day Trip from MD/DE Beaches!

By Roberta B |

After visiting the Ocean City, Fenwick, Bethany & Rehoboth areas for many, many years, we finally decided to drive to Lewes (Loo-iss) to take the ferry to Cape May, New Jersey. You arrive 30-45 min before your sailing where you are placed in queue to wait for boarding. The ferry team casually walks through the cars looking underneath the vehicles and occasionally asking for a trunk to be popped - all for the security of the passengers. At boarding time, the cars file on where you park on the lower car deck and are then free to go to the upper levels where you will find outdoor seating and a very large indoor section with comfy seating, a full bar and a food section where snacks, coffee and other beverages, and prepared foods are available for purchase.

Please note that overall the ferry is a utilitarian vehicle and not a luxury experience.

The 85 minute ferry ride goes pretty quickly and is a pleasant enough experience.

When the announcement is made to return to your vehicles, the arrival and unloading process is smooth and organized. Vehicles move quickly off the ferry and go on their way.

There is not much near the ferry docks and the drive to the Cape May beaches and historic areas is about 3 - 5 miles. There are shuttles from the ferry to Cape May in season but NOT in the off season.

The round trip ferry ride for 2 adults and a car was $66.00. Cape May was lovely and we thought it was worth the cost.

Great ride if it's running when you need it to run

More Departures. Both earlier and later. You need to offer departures at least every hour starting at 6am.

Nice cool way to cut miles off from trip to Delmarva from South Jersey

By BillF20639 |

We went from Cape May to Lewes. We arrived early and ate our picnic lunch at nearby David Douglass Sr. Memorial Park, which has tables, benches and a small beach. There are other free beaches with free parking north of there along Beach Drive.

The ferry ride was well organized, quite full of cars but the passenger areas dwere not crowded. Pleasant crossing, saw a pod of 6 dolphins. A tad expensive but no regrets,

Best times my mom and I ever had together.

By Kurt D |

I have been using the Lewes Delaware Ferry for many years now to get me from Lewes Delaware to Cape May New Jersey. The trip alone is very relaxing and so are all the views you will see while traveling on board. I have seen dolphins aw well on my trips. My mom and I always used to park at the Cape May terminal to do a round trip on the ferry. It wae the best 3 hours we ever had and we both loved doing that as well. My mom passed away last year but our memories doing that are some of the best times we had together. I still love the ferry and use it every time I go to Atlantic City from Ocean City Maryland. Be sure to book early if you have to take your car on the ferry as it can be very busy especially in June, July, and August. Enjoy your cruise.

Round Trip

By PensandSteelersFan |

We decided to take the ferry for a round trip ride on a very hot July day. We departed Lewes for Cape May. Most of our time was spent inside the air conditioned area, but we did go outside at times for some photos. We did not leave the ferry at all, and stayed on for a full round trip. We spotted several dolphins on the trip and enjoyed the peaceful experience where someone else was doing the "driving".

Mini-cruise experience

By jerryr111 |

Having been to Cape May many times we decided to take the Ferry just for a getaway
and have a new local experience. We decided to do a round trip ticket (which for seniors was only 24 dollars total for 2).....We stayed on the Ferry when it got to Lewes and it did a turnaround pretty fast. The weather on the boat was sunny and the sights were great....including seeing a whale breach along the way. I would recommend this little "cruise" to anyone wanting to just get away for 3 hours and enjoy some relaxing time.

Great find

An excellent spot for those looking for a nice atmosphere and a good glass of wine, with staff who are helpful and informative.

Rude Associate

By Lisa P |

Please don't call the customer service line due to the customer service agents are rude and try to rush you off the phone without answering your questions.

Good Short Cut

By Dennis M |

The ferry allows you travel between Delaware and New Jersey without driving around Delaware Bay. They weren't busy when we were there so I don't think reservations are a must. Well worth the cost of the ride.

Reliable Service and Ride

By Kevin S |

We have always had great experiences on this ferry regardless the weather or wave conditions. In our experiences, it has been rare when the waves have been a factor in our trip. The boats are clean, well maintained and staffed with very friendly crew members. The facilities at both ports are nice with the one in Cape May being larger and having more dining options in the event you get there early. There is nothing that beats this trip on a sunny day or a clear sunset evening. We recommend it for your travels.

Our only complaint is that we didn't hear an announcement for the last trip we took and wound up running to our car which was in line. Just stay aware of your time and be ready to board 15-20 minutes before the scheduled departure.

Lewes is a quaint small town with some terrific restaurants. The DART bus system runs from the Ferry through the town so if you are doing a day trip you can skip the cost of transporting your car. Cape May often has a shuttle bus that runs from the terminal to the center mall in town. Check the website and schedules.

The slow boat that was just the right speed

By Biff Simpson |

I’m owed to ferries that scoot along at near-car-like speeds. This ferry crept along at maybe 15-20 mph, but there were lots of comfortable chairs and lots of ocean to watch and dogs to pat. We took the car and camper and we’re allowed back to the vehicle any time we wanted.

Really, my only complaint was the people “directing traffic” were a mess and never made eye contact and one even walked away, so I just drove off when it looked like I could (sheesh!)

Wonderful Experience, Highly Recommended

By rayej |

I took this trip alone and was nervous about the process of putting my car on the Ferry. I worried for nothing, Every part of my experience was seamless. I took it from NJ to Delaware. Staff from both sides were informative, organized and friendly. There was security each step of the way. I purchased my tickets in advance and suggest you do too because they may be sold out. When I arrived, the check in process went smoothly. The lady at the check in booth gave me all the info I needed as I explained this my first time doing this. She advised me to park in the designated spot until the designated time to come back and get in the car to drive it onto the ferry. She told me to lock my car and to visit the terminal which had restrooms, information and a place to eat and drink. It was only 9:30 am. My ticket was for 10:30 am.
I did and was very pleased to see how much there is to do at this terminal. There is free mini golf, a playground under the shade of trees, corn hole games, a giant connect four game, walking paths, seats, food stands, restrooms, and an information center. The sites over the water were beautiful with wildlife all around. I wished I knew about this when my children were younger they would have loved it! Before I new it, an announcement was made to go to the cars. I did and in a very organized safe fashion, numerous personal guided us to drive our cars onto the ferry, Again, once on, you could lock your car and go up to one of many levels to sit, relax and enjoy the views along the ride. Again, an announcement was made to return to the cars. I did and drove off without a glitch. There are many signs on rides leading to and from the ferry directing you to your destination. This process takes about 2 hours and saves 90 minutes of driving time but you are relaxing the whole time!

Nice ride

By Michael A |

This is a big 100 car ferry. Trip takes about an hour and a half to cover the 17 miles across the Delaware bay. Reservations are a must. It's a great ride when the weather is great.

Convenient transportation

This is the best way to travel from N.J. to Delaware. It's also a fun trip with a good bar on the ferry.

Fantastic Trip Across the Delaware Bay

By hoopscoach-dmar |

We recently took our first trip on the Cape May Lewes Ferry. I was going to Cape May to take part in a bicycle event.

I called and requested information about the trip. The person I talked to went out of her way to explain the procedure. Since I was taking a bicycle on a bicycle rack, we had to pay a little extra. The cost was very reasonable.

When we got to the Lewes terminal, before boarding, the agent very helpful and gave us clear directions on the next step. I had estimated the length of the vehicle with the rack that was on the back of the car.. It turned out that I estimated it longer than it was. They immediately adjusted the price downward. So that was a nice surprise.

Food choices are limited so snacks on the boat. If you get there early enough, you can get out of your car and grab a bite to eat before the ferry departs.

I drove the vehicle onto the ferry. After we parked, I went up to the top deck to get us drinks.

My wife stayed in the car, so I came back down with the drinks. We could feel the motion of the boat a little more in the car. The ride was peaceful, made more so by the calm September weather.

Our return trip on Sunday went just as smoothly. This time my wife and I both went to the top deck to enjoy the weather and the fresh air. Birds followed us for a good portion of the trip. It was a clear day, so we could make out the Cape May coast (barely) even as we arrived back in Lewes.

It was a great ride. I would recommend it as part of a trip or even to take a ride over for dinner or a bike ride. Just make sure to check the schedule for the last departure of the day.

Accommodations were very good for cyclists. I talked to a few cyclists, who also participated in the cycling event in Cape May. They indicated that it was a very simple procedure to take the bike on the ferry and the cost was very inexpensive.

Online reservation causes confusion with too much selections/options.

By Boaterdudeandwife |

Good alternative to driving to and from NJ.

Only issue we had past 2 trips, were their website with so much choices/options that it made reservation experience too confusing.

BOTH times, our reservations were done "wrong" because of confusion on my part.

Need to make that process less confusing and selections/options more clear and concise.

Great alternative to I-95!!

By Beachbum2473 |

We go to Cape May every year, but we hate the trip through Philadelphia and alternate routes in the area because of the massive traffic backups. No matter which route we’ve tried, there’s no way to avoid crazy traffic or hours of 2-lane rural roads that just crawl along.
This year we decided to take the ferry to Delaware and drive home from there. It was great!! All of the employees were friendly and helpful. The terminal and the ferry were super clean and so convenient. Both sold drinks and snacks, which was great. The ferry sells cocktails and sandwiches and a nice selection of drinks and foods. It was so nice to relax on the ferry with a fresh cup of coffee and watch the dolphins and gulls instead of sitting in traffic. And the price for taking a car and 3 adults was a fraction of what we would have paid for one of those touristy boat trips advertised around Cape May.
We would highly recommend the ferry for a beautiful, relaxing detour around highway congestion as well as just a nice ride.

Modern, well run ferry

By Alison S |

Took the ferry on a leisure car trip up the east coast. Beautiful, modern terminals. We did not have reservations and were told they were required, but that there was a one-time exemption, which we took. (You make reservations online.) Dogs are allowed in the lounge which was fun. Handicap/elevator access is good, but very little signage (at least on the Lewes side). Nice trip. Glad we came this way.

Mixed feelings

By BHUANG69 |

My friend and I visit Rehoboth regularly (we live in NNJ) and we never rode the ferry. This time we decided to stay in Atlantic City for a night, drive to Cape May and then take the ferry over.
I did the online ticketing in advance and printed the ticket. Upon checking in, there was no problem. We waited in the lot for the ferry to arrive and unload the cars and passengers. Once we got on board, we went up to the cafe and bar.
It was a winter day and the wind was not strong. However, there was some degree of shaking on the ferry. I was already a bit under the weather and therefore the shaking did not help. Fortunately, I was able to take a nap to avoid getting sick.
The ferry really saves us time (around 2.5 hours to cross in total including the waiting time) but I don't think I will be doing it again any time soon.

Best trip and service ever

Convenient car ferry

By Tony J |

I used to live in NJ. I used to take the car ferry to vacation with my family in Ocean City, Maryland many years ago. In 2021 I took the walkon ferry from Cape May to view homes in Delaware, when I decided to move from NJ to Delaware. My realtor picked me up from the ferry to view over many homes until I finally bought one. I finally closed on my new home in Delaware in September 2021. Most recently I took my Audi on the car ferry to visit my family, relatives and friends, who still live in NJ.

A standard vehicle under 20 feet costs between $25 to $32. Larger vehicles cost more. Passengers cost $6-$8 per person. The car ferry is very convenient compared to driving from Delaware to northern NJ or NYC, which takes much longer or almost 5 hours. They partially renovated the four car ferries namely the Delaware, New Jersey, Cape May and Cape Henlopen. They plan to replace these four older large car ferries with four smaller car ferries. The ferries have lots of staff to keep the ferries clean. You can purchase food, drinks, or gift items from their gift shops. All car ferries have at least two bars including one inside near the food court and one outside on the upper outside deck. Two armed police officers maintain the peace on the ferries.

The Cape May and Lewes ferry terminals have free parking lots if you want to travel on the ferries without your vehicle as walk-ons. Walk-ons must go through a security checkpoint. The two story terminals also have elevators, brochures, restrooms, restaurants, full bars and coffee/snack shops. They also have outdoor seating. Overall I like the car ferries, because they are convenient and enjoyable especially during the warmer weather when you can hang out on the outside decks.

Alternative transport available

By LAURIE S |

Excellent project management organizational skills. The Lu take vehicles, cyclists, and walk ons. Timely departures with security screening mandatory. Restaurants/bars are in terminal and on ship. Very comfortable ride. Seniors, children, and military discounts available. Highly recommend. Tram at cape may takes you into town. Very reasonable.

Inconsiderate people and poor customer service

By Anthony S |

Spent alot of money to ride this tub only to be Subject to inconsiderate people talking too loudly on their phone about their love life, kids crying and dogs yipping. Asked attendant to say something to yipping dog owners and he walked right by them! Lastly, Spent nearly 30 bucks for 2 coffees and 2 breakfast sandwiches that were mediocre at best. Not riding this tub again!

A Must Activity

By Rudy B |

I've taken the ferry multiple times, but this is my first review. In a nutshell, the ferry is the best bang for your buck if you to continue a drive up the eastern seaboard - easily says you 5-hours of driving. You can book the ferry online, so you can make sure there's space at the times you want to travel. You can take your car, bicycle, motorcycle, RV to include travel trailers/TOAD.

This last time we took a day trip from Ocean City, MD to Cape May, NJ. We left our car at the Lewes parking lot (there's a sign that says you can park overnight, if needed.)

Booking our trip online was easy, but we still had to checkin at the Lewes ticket booth to get our actual tickets - get there 20 minutes early in case there is a line. Also, if you do the same thing make sure you buy your tickets for the shuttle that takes you from the cruise terminal to downtown Cape May.

Once you get to Cape May, the shuttle drops you off about 5-blocks from the downtown shopping area. My wife was 5-weeks from total knee replacement surgery and I have several knee/ankle issues and we both handled the walk with no problem, In fact, we walked maybe 5-miles that day. The beach is about 20-minute walk at our pace. There are also several shops and restaurants in the downtown shopping area.

On your return to the ferry, the shuttle driver will give you the shuttle schedule - basically the shuttle makes two trips for each ferry from downtown to the cruise ship terminal. The shuttle runs an hour apart. If you wait until the second shuttle trip back to the ferry, give yourself a little extra time - we got the last two seats when we got there 2-minutes before the shuttle departed.

About the ferry. it's spacious. There's indoor eating and resting areas that are air conditioned. You can also sit on the decks throughout the ferry. We didn't feel crowded. If you bring your vehicle, you don't have to wait inside your vehicle. The staff will make an announcement when you need to return to your vehicles.

This was the best way to travel across the Delaware Bay. It's worth the trip and Cape May is fabulous. We've been to downtown Lewes several times and it is worth a visit. Several shops and restaurants.

Lastly, bicyclist will enjoy using the ferry. There are bike lanes from the Cape May terminal to downtown. In Lewes, there's a bike path that takes you to downtown Lewes, as well as paths that take you to Ocean City/all the beaches along the route (25-miles) and to Georgetown, DE that is close to 25 miles away.

Best way to travel from Jersey to Lewes

By Diane C |

Just relax have a drink and stretch your legs. No need to fight the Delaware Bridge traffic from South Jersey. It's made my travels a pleasure. Good service, internet and comfortable seating makes it a joy to do this jaunt

Good ride on the Ferry

By Melina M |

Good experience! There was plenty of rocking even though the water was calm. I’m glad I took bonine! We sat on the main floor inside in very comfortable seats with a table. We didn’t purchase and food or drinks.

Terrific!

By Bryan & Denise |

Up and out early AM on a Saturday! First ferry out from the Cape to a football game at USNA in Annapolis. Beautiful sunrise, relaxing ride, second ☕and a nice snack for the short trip. 12 hours later caught the last out from Lewes, same great ride....maybe a little recliner nap on the way while watching World Series!

Ferry Cross the Deleware Bay

By Gary W |

For years, I’ve been driving northeast on I95 only to essentially turnaround and drive the same distance southeast through NJ to get to Stone Harbor on the Atlantic Coast. I greatly dislike this drive! For some reason this past July, I decided to return south by taking the Cape May-Lewes Ferry for the first time. What a great trip! I am sure this is highly dependent on the weather since the crossing is at the mouth of the bay with the Atlantic Ocean on the port side heading toward Lewes, DE.
While there is seating inside, we spent the entire voyage (about 90 minutes) on the deck outside. It was a refreshing and relatively calm trip. Depending on the weather reports, this is definitely the way I’m going henceforth.
There are also refreshments and a gift shop onboard, so save the car miles (you won’t really save travel time) soak up some sun, enjoy the breeze and let also those negative ions from the churning water invigorate your trip. Smooth crossings to you!

Wheelchair Access - Wow! I was so impressed...

By Valerie C |

WHEELCHAIR ACCESS - Circumstances while traveling was a bit different with me than most because I was traveling with my 92-year-old Mom who was in a wheelchair. A Ferry crewmember pushed my mom onto the Ferry while I loaded the car and then I met her onboard. A few minutes before we arrived on the opposite shore another Ferry crewmember came to where we were seated and stayed with her while I drove the car off the Ferry. There was a police officer watching the cars disembark and when I drove past him, he motioned me to drive to the side. Honestly, I thought I had done something wrong. On the contrary he knew what car I was in and that my mom was getting off the ferry with assistance. I pulled to the right and the crewmember who was with my mom soon appeared with her.

Wow! I was so impressed with this entire crossing especially since I was with my mom in a wheelchair. EVERYONE from start - the reservationist, to end - the man who pushed her off the ferry was amazing.

Excellent customer service.

By Wally C |

Customer service in changing and adjusting my reservation via email was easy and helpful. Everyone we encountered was very pleasant and friendly! Price is right also.

No Communication

By Jonathan M |

Now, sitting here for almost 3 hours at the terminal as there seems to be some type of issue with the ferry. Absolutely no communication at all. No announcements, no loud speakers, no nothing. Terrible.

Such a nice ride

By chris s |

A great ride for the whole family. Very pleasant and very good scenery. Pack food or purchase on board. Great bar. Lots of specials. A great way to vivid Cape May too

Another great trip on the Ferry to Lewes

By Justin W |

I took the ferry from Cape May to Lewes because it saves over two hours from driving around South Jersey to the Delaware Memorial Bridge. The ferry ride is an hour and a half and you park your car and can relax on the deck on a nice day.

I sat on the top deck in a reclining deck chair and just soaked up the sun and let the captain do the driving. It is such a beautiful view and on an occasion you might see a whale or dolphins swimming by. I got such a nice tan just relaxing on the deck chair.

You can also get a discount with AAA, AARP or with an organization that deals with travel. You just have to ask. The people in reservations are really nice and making a reservation was a pleasure.

Scenic and relaxing: The ferry offers a pleasant, scenic journey !

By Rich M |

Great experience, crew was pleasant, enjoyed the trip, seats were very comfortable!! Would recommend this little cruise to anyone wanting to get away for 3 hours and have some relaxing time.

Cape May Ferry Trip

By john u |

I would give 5 stars, but the wifi is locked. Pretty stupid.
The ferry is great. It's a perfect alternative to driving. Less stress, and aggravation. When dolphins are in the area, the captain comes on, and tells you what side of the ship to see them.
Highly recommended.

Enjoy the ride

By Debbi W |

Fun, relaxing way to travel to and from the Delaware shores. Boarding and disembarking were safely and quickly executed. Ample seating on all levels. Snacks and beverages are available. There's also a bar on the upper level. Overall, it was a relaxing ride and a nice break from driving.

Ferry is the way to go

Love the Ferry, drive on, take the dog, have a refreshing beverage, watch the water. The ferry is a great way to get to and from NJ and DE.

Getting dated

By havesomefun2012 |

We were informed the night before our departure that our sailing had been cancelled. With further her inquiry we found out they had a ship out of service for a week and were hoping to get it back. During high season???? Very poor planning or luck. Boat looks old as compared to the nice job they have done on the terminals. I hope they have budgeted for some new boats! The cancelled departure did mess up our plans but they said we were lucky to get on the next ship.

Poor

By Tiffany H |

I went into the termal to get something to drink since we had over an hr wait. To be told that I couldn’t get a coffee because they were closed. Tried to go to the bar and was told we couldn’t get a drink there if we are not going to eat. It is 3 o’clock in the afternoon and you have a boat running. A lot of unhappy people walking out.

Perfect experience!

What a fun thing to do!

By Patti K |

We did a day trip starting in Maryland driving to Cape May on New Years Eve. The town was cute and we spent a nice morning there. We decided to take the ferry just for fun. It's very inexpensive, was easy to purchase tickets, was easy to find. We arrived ahead of boarding time as instructed. We had a drink and then boarded the ferry. It was easy on, easy off with a nice boat ride in between. The weather was nice enough that we were able to be above board. We definitely will do it again!

visit to Cape May

By Kevin B |

Great way to spend a morning on the way to Cape May, beats driving from Central Jersey! Make sure you get to the ferry at least 30-60 minutes before the sailing: if you have a reservation and arrive late, you may lose your space! Cars and trucks line up early and the line extends onto the road, especially for the first sailing.

Excellent customer service

By Ed |

I’ve been on the ferry in the past and it was a good experience. This time we’re preparing to go to to Ocean City, MD for bike week.
I made my reservations online. Actually I made a few reservations online and didn’t get a receipt.
I contacted customer service by email. I got a quick response and was fortunate enough to be working with Sue Seager the Senior Customer Service Rep.
Sue looked up my account by my name. She quickly found where I went wrong. Refunded me where I needed to be refunded and straightened out my reservations.
Thank you so much Ms Seager! Your help was invaluable for straightening out a wretch like me ✌️✌️🇺🇸🇺🇸

Nice Crossing - Roundtrip

By Kurt K |

Ship was well organized. COVID protocols were in place. Service was a bit limited but overall a nice way to get to and from Cape May.

Great trip

By Vincent G |

For years we would travel to ocean city,MD by way of the Delaware memorial bridge.A few years ago we decide to try the Cape May & Lewes ferry it did not cut down our travel time but it took you away from the wheel of you vehicle for 80 minutes. The ride was a wonderful experience and so relaxing. The seating inside was very comfortable with a tv,snack bar and gift shop. The staff is very friendly and accommoding. On a couple of occasion we arrived before our scheduled crossing and they put us on , during the peak season I don't think that will happen. We go to Ocean city ,Md. twice a year, May and September and we look forward to the ferry ride.

Not for people with wheelchairs

By Tca713 |

Was not wheelchair accessible! The daughter is dependent on wheelchair. Stay away. No where on their site states no wheelchairs!

Nice experience

By Tom M |

We went round trip as walk on passengers. Boarding was efficient and on time. Cost for senior was $14 round trip. We bought our tickets day before at CM terminal. Very friendly greetings from all crew members. Two levels to pick from with comfortable indoor and outdoor seats. Ferry was spotless and well maintained. Upper deck had an outdoor covered bar area. Both terminals have full service restaurants with nice water views. We took the Lewes bus $1 each to town center which had quaint stores and easy walking distance to museums and restaurants on the water. Lewes bus runs every 30 minutes but sits only 12 passengers. The full 12 stop loop offers a nice tour of the Lewes area. To go to the shopping outlets or Rehobeth beach you first take a full size public bus Dart #204 to a transportation center to transfer to another Dart bus. Exact change. Bring many $1 bills and a pocket full of change quarters and dimes. Because of this, boarding takes time. They should sell bus tickets in ferry terminal for expediency. From terminal to outlets or beach using two buses could take 1 hour or more. If you want to go to Lewes, shopping outlets, Rehobeth beach consider taking your car for convenience although parking can be a problem except at the outlets. Overall, our visit to Lewes and the leisurely ride on the ferries round trip was a very enjoyable outing.

Saved us Time in Traffic

By Gloria S |

2nd time we took the ferry. If your in the area and it's a nice day, it's worth taking the ferry for a day trip, either to Delaware or New Jersey. This time we were returning to NJ thru Delaware and transported our car. If you are taking your car, you need to get there early. The boat holds about 100 cars and 800 people. Surprisingly, there were a lot of cars from various states.
The trip saved us about 100 extra miles of driving, during the holiday traffic, so it was more than worth it. It's about an 80 minute ride. It was a beautiful day, but once we got out to the water, the boat was rocking. Not sure what they do in bad weather.
The web site was a little difficult to navigate, so my husband had to call them to finalize the plans.
They do offer discounts, so check to see if you're eligible.
Overall, it was worth it.

Pretty good ferry service

By Jim A |

This ferry runs from Lewes to Cape May and is a great alternative for going north. The ships have food, drinks and a store and have comfortable seats. We spent time at the bar upstairs outside and our server, Dari, kept the drinks flowing with good conversation. We would take this ferry again without a doubt!

Terrible

By Greta |

It’s a frustrating process. Cars can load much longer than passengers. The Ferry runs consistently late. Sat for 15 minutes watching them load cars long after they told me I was not able to walk on with a prepaid ticket. Was told the crew pulled the ramps early. Customer service really poor

Wonderful break in a day of driving

By Lucygal |

My husband and I (plus our SUV) took the Cape May-Lewes Ferry on two occasions during our recent Atlantic coast road trip. The experience was wonderful each time. Our northbound trip occurred on a sunny, clear day. We enjoyed watching dolphins and seagulls during the crossing. Our southbound trip was on a cloudy windy day with some rolling waves and cooler temps. Every staff member — at check in, at the restaurant, and throughout the ship—was friendly, courteous, and helpful. I’m not sure why people mention having difficulties. The online booking process was easy and each time we arrived we happened to be early enough to be put on an earlier crossing, which was great. I loved this ferry. I wish it ran from Florida up to NJ!

HIghly Recommend

I live on the eastern shore of Maryland. The ferry is always an easy, enjoyable way to head to New Jersey. Whether we are visiting family along the shore or spending a day in Cape May we always travel the ferry. It is a comfortable and scenic ride!

Poor Tone with Customer Service

We made a mistake and didn't plan ahead to realize that we needed a reservation for the ferry. That's our fault, and we didn't get to ride the ferry, which we are told is very nice. When we entered the gate the woman attendant gave a very condescending tone when explaining to us that we needed reservations, they were all booked up for the day, adding the unnecessary detail, "...it's been on our website for 3 years," then staring at us like we should feel guilty. We got it. People make mistakes and today was our day for one. We didn't need the negative emphasis from this employee added to our trip. They could consider adopting a more positive and compassionate response to folks who have goofed up. I am sure that other folks have made the same mistake.

A neat way to travel

By Lindsey C |

We took the ferry from Lewes to Cape May, mostly for the experience of taking the car on a ferry, and to continue our trip to visit New England. The booking experience, boarding and disembarking were very easy. On the ferry there are options to purchase food, drink and merchandise. I think that the people who board without vehicles get the best pick of seats onboard (tables next to windows), because by the time we were parked and got upstairs, the only options were rows of chairs toward the middle. We sat for a little while before my daughter and I decided to walk around the outside. Overall, it's a neat experience if you're traveling that way, just to try a different mode of transportation.

Disappointed

By Carol19958 |

While all of the staff of the ferry terminal and on the ferry itself were most friendly and welcoming, sad that when booking 4 tickets for the Funsters Music cruise 9-21-19, the fact that you needed to bring your own chairs, since no seating in the music area was mentioned or suggested. So unable to enjoy the music we came to hear, since had to try and find a seat, which were plentiful upstairs, inside, no view, no music, but unable to stand for long periods of time due to physical issues left no choice. I feel it would have been thoughtful for this fact to have been disclosed when booking.

Time Saver and Good One Time Experience

By Tootallal |

Easy on and off. I booked it on line while sitting at the outside gate. Water was a bit rough so we sat in the car most of the ride. My advice is not to let the guy make you pull too close to the rail or else you can't get out of the car.

Great Alternative to Stop and Go Traffic

By bpbpfeiffer |

It was an easy sail out on the top deck when there is an open-air bar! The security gate was quick and all of the staff was very friendly. Canine units added a sense of security!

Easy, well organized, fun getaway

By TracyN |

So easy to make reservations online for this ferry trip! I planned a last minute getaway and everything went very smoothly. I loved that I could just enter the ferry parking lot with just a check of my confirmation number and I head right into line to get on the ferry. I arrived a little after 9:00 for my 9:30 reservation and was a little worried that I was late. CMLF recommends getting there 30-60 minutes in advance. But everything was fine. Drove right on the ferry and knew exactly where to go. Plenty of people helping to park the car. I was a little disappointed in the lack of masks on the guests. I didn't head inside, instead choosing to take in the sights and enjoy the fresh air. Would definitely recommend.

Quick, easy and relaxing

By SandJN |

The ferry was easy to find and access. Information provided was clear and accurate. The staff were friendly. There were plenty of comfortable seating options indoors and outdoors. Boarding and getting off was quick and efficient. There was food service but we did not use it.

Expensice out of season

By mbw244 |

So if your going to use this out of season you gonna have to bring your car as the shuttles between the ferry and cape may do not run. So were talking about $80 dollars for a round trip. Small amenities for foo and drink as well as a bar. Not very fast 1.5 hours to cross the bay which outs a time damper on your visit as then ask you to be back within 45 minutes of takeoff and the last ferry is 5:30.

Great Brewery hopping on both sides of Ferry

By Passenger66147672951 |

Very easy to book online. Very organized and felt safe on boat. Got to boat early on Lewes side and time was easily changed to accommodate our full car. Thank you for a memorable family boat ride!

Great ferry ride

By Norik H |

It was a nice trip and it wasn’t that long. There’s a gift shop with shirts and keychains and there’s food and drinks they also let you bring your car on the ferry

Gret ferry ride

By Becky H |

We rode this ferry going to NJ and back to Delaware a few days later. The ferry is so nice and clean. There's a concession area to get snacks and drinks, plenty of seating outside of your car. We sat on the bow in the adirondack chairs and had a gret view. We saw the Cape May lighthouse come into view and 2 smaller lighthouses as we were close to Delaware.

Excellent!

By Sadie |

Very clean, most guests kept their masks on. Good selection of snacks, very clean bathroom. My kids and I just went for a round trip since they've never been on a boat before and we all had a total blast.

Visit to Lewes for a few hours

By JMOTM |

We took the ferry over from Cape May to Lewes and enjoyed a relaxing ride on the ferry. Covid precautions were well observed (they did however have to make one announcement re some passengers not following protocol). Friendly crew and easy boarding process. We lamented not bringing our car as we became worried after finishing our late lunch in downtown lewes and couldn't find an uber to take us back to the ferry terminal. Luckily a kind patron at the restaurant offered to drive us to the ferry.

Relaxing ride

By triceh |

This was our second time taking the ferry from Lewes to Cape May. Both times have been extremely organized; putting the vehicle onto the ferry and exiting the ferry is like a well oiled machine. The ride is always pleasant and relaxing. Alcoholic drinks are available at the bar at the top of the ferry. The bar was quite busy and it would’ve been helpful to have more than one bartender on staff.

Best ferry experience!

By Caeli |

First time taking this ferry...best ferry experience I've had! First of all, I got great help from Irene when reserving our trip. She was so very helpful in helping me understand the process and actually getting on the one we needed. We had a great lunch at Grains in the ferry terminal in Lewes. We ate on their deck and were entertained with live music, while we ate. Although our dog was not with us, I was very pleased to see that dogs are allowed up on deck, which is not so on the Lake Michigan ferry. Finally there were lots of good seats and we had a very smooth ride.

Not Worth the Headache

By Michael |

A couple things to note if you're planning on taking the ferry and are from out of town: they charge an extra "fuel surcharge" that isn't mentioned ANYWHERE on their website. It's after you've already paid for your ticket and you won't be allowed to take the ferry if you don't pay it. Otherwise you just forfeit your ticket. Also, make sure to get there LATE because apparently if you're one of the last ones on, you'll be one of the first ones off because of how stupid their unloading system is. Honestly, just drive the extra two hours around the cape and avoid this ABSOLUTE MESS.

Great Family Fun

By Jeanne B |

Fabulous trip took the round trip to have something fun to do for the family, was very impressed by the staff, the cleanliness of the port and the boat. Great selection of food and snacks. The bartender Mike at the adult bar was personable, informative and nice he made every guest feel like family

Not Covid Safe

By Happiness609372 |

It was a nice ride and they took all precautions during this Covid Pandemic but once on the boat they don’t follow though with ensuring the people are wearing masks. There were several families, one which was a very large family with children with them walking around inside and outside with no masks. This was very disconcerting to how they make all the cautions on our safety. Did not feel very safe with these people not following simple rules and felt the crew should have asked them to put on their masks instead of keeping them in their hands.

Fun way to see both towns, good parking & shuttle bus, comfy

By Twinbrook60 |

Our 1st time taking this ferry boat ride. We got on at the Lewes terminal, having parked our car there (free, easy). Easy to find, good road signs. Big terminal inside, has a gift shop & cafe, plus outdoor eating too. Lewes terminal no longer has mini-golf, fyi, though Cape May still does have free mini-golf course (small, outside). There was very stormy weather predicted on the day we'd reserved, but it was a simple phone call w/ friendly operator to change it to a later date. No reserved seating on board, but tons of seats, all comfortable. Ship has a concession w/ food & many tables to eat at. But it's the view that's wonderful! Sadly, we did not see any dolphins or whales on either leg of our trip, but we did see turtles, leaping fish, many kinds of birds, butterflies (!), crabs, & jelly fish. On board were lots of babies & little kids & even dogs to see :). Great deal = reserve a spot on the $5 round trip per person Cape May shuttle into town -- the ferry terminal is not anywhere near the downtown & would be a humongous hike along fast traffic roads. It takes you to the Welcome Center, where nice staff help direct you wherever you want to explore. The main outdoor pedestrian mall has eateries & shops, & is just a couple of blocks from what looked like a nice beach. We saw 2 mini-golf courses along the beachfront road :) We had good seafood for lunch at the Cape May Fish Market. When we got back to Lewes, it was time for dinner, & we had excellent Italian food at Touch of Italy in Lewes (the restaurant, not the bakery, tho it sells the baked goods too). The ferry terminal is only about a 5-10 min. drive from the Town of Lewes. I highly recommend this ferry ride as a fun way to see both small seashore towns.

Last leg to home

By chevydoc |

As always, the Cape May Lewes Ferry, provides relaxing travel to and from home. Fewer crossing in the winter make the scheduling tricky, but we were able to make this one.

Rude employee

By Michael Rich |

An older gentleman working this afternoon in the parking lot could not have been any more rude and disrespectful. He did not give me clear directions what to do since I was the first car to be loaded on the ferry, so I pulled over to the side and he screamed at me. He also banged on my car window instead of being polite and requesting me to go directly to the boat in the northernmost lane. Shame on that old miserable grump.

Save Time, Money, Fuel & Relax doing it!

By Colleen C |

We visited Cape May and really wanted to go to Delaware as well. We heard that the Ferry was the way to go instead of driving all the way around and by going onto the ferry your able to see 2 Lighthouses (which is our thing) only by going on this ride.
The personnel is VERY professional and thorough.
The process is you go through a toll where they scan your tickets if you bought them online (easy to do) choose from 4 different time daily (winter) and from which location to the other side. then pull up and attendant scans your ticket and looks for explosives on your car. From there you can go into the terminal and play FREE MINI GOLF, sit at the bar, go to their gift shop, look at brochures etc... then they page for everyone to get back to their cars and get everyone single filed onto the ferry. The whole process is very cool. From there you can sit in your car and relax for 90mins. or go into the ship and watch from outside or shop inside, watch TV in the lounge or eat from their snack bar.
Another cool thing about this trip is you can see the Watch Tower, Cape May Lighthouse and S.S. Atlantus at the same time.
Great way of transportation! Military and AAA discounts!

A great way to travel!

By Melinda H |

A friend suggested the Ferry as an alternative to driving to Ocean City Maryland from New Jersey. What a great suggestion. You do need to make online reservations in advance is you are traveling with your vehicle. On the website it indicated a recommended arrival 30-60 minutes prior to departure. Since this was a new experience and I lacked familiarity with the roads I arrived thirty minutes early. At the entrance gate they tell you what line to go in and then you are met by some friendly help that checks your ID against the reservation. Since it was the off season they gave me the option of boarding the next Ferry (one hour prior to my reservation) which I happily accepted. Loading was easy with plenty of people to point your in the right direction. You can wait in your vehicle but taking some steps up to the next deck gets you to comfortable seating and tables, restrooms and food. I had a pre-made breakfast sandwich which was fine. The trip took about hone hour which gives you time for relaxing or strolling the deck. Don't forget to look at the Cape May lighthouse at departure. We arrived in Lewes on schedule and were promptly unloading after some impressive "parking" by the crew. This was a great experience that I will repeat again. If it was the busy season I still would take the Ferry but would not count on being able to get on an earlier departure.

Fantastic experience

By Love Cape May! |

The process was very smooth and pleasant. The Ferry was clean and there were ample seating opportunities both inside and out. The ferry departed and arrived on time. The personal help desk was very helpful and answered my questions before I made the reservation.

Enjoyable Ride

By MGQ |

Took the ferry on a Friday night for Rock The Boat. Round-trip ferry ride to Cape May and back. You do not disembark for this event. Beautiful night for a boat ride. We passed two lighthouses.
The band was entertaining and refreshments could be purchased. The boat was filled to capacity. We could not find a seat on the trip over but got one on the ride back. To secure a seat, get in line for the ferry boarding at least 30 minutes in advance of boarding.

Great Experience, fun and organized.

By MikeD08062 |

Great trip from CM to Lewes. Well organized and friendly staff. Really nice seating inside the ferry. Nice snack bar. I was really expecting a hassle bring our car onboard, but they really have a system. I even saw people who packed a lunch for the trip over. Great experience!

Frequent Ferry Goer

By Lynn B |

My husband and I thoroughly enjoy the Cape May Lewes Ferry. It’s a 90 minute ride on the Delaware Bay and usually quite calm. We live in Lewes but are Jersey born so we go back frequently. The ferry people are always helpful, kind and courteous. It’s a relaxing trip where you often see dolphins and once even a whale!

A fun adventure…

By Mary Ann C |

We travelled from Cape May to Lewes and back a few days later in early September. Every part of the experience was positive. We had reservations and all was well handled. On shore in Lewes, where we had to wait for a while before returning to Cape May, we enjoyed sitting by the bay - lovely dock area. On board we were able to choose where to sit, inside or outside - in the wind, or out of the wind. It was a fun adventure- would recommend it.

Never again

By BeachDreamer |

This was the last leg of our trip. RUINED. Waited two hours to board the ferry as it was an hour late leaving - then waited to dock in Lewes for 45 minutes - 600 feet from the dock. Two toddlers trapped in the car for over four hours. No explanation.
Never never again! Will we do this ferry!
This is the worst ferry in the world!
What a way to spend the last day of our vacation!

Wonderful day on the ferry

By G6021SImarkb |

Taking a ride in early December we were concerned about the weather. Turned out be a perfect days, nice calm seas.

The vessel arrived right on time and we boarded promptly. Really appreciated that everyone had to go through security to board. Made us much more at ease.

The staff was wonderful. We had a few beers and some snacks. Before you knew it we arrived effortlessly in Cape May. We will be back in the Spring.

Another safe and scenic trip across the bay

By Justin W |

The Cape May-Lewes Ferry is one of the safest most scenic trips I have taken all year. This is the third time I have taken the ferry and it is a quick mode of travel, much faster than by car.

The terminal was nicely decorated for the holidays which made it very festive looking and the trip itself was so well organized that we got from Lewes to Cape May in a. Hour and fifteen minutes. It was really calm on the water. It is even better in the summer months when you can sit outside.

2 babes and a brew

By 2babesandabrew |

Excellent time on the ferry both ways today. Saw a few dolphins and enjoyed being on the water. On a side note a few of the employees could use a dose of kindness to others.

Fun "Cruise"

By Henry W |

Took the Cape May-Lewes ferry for a day trip. Convenient, reasonably priced for foot passengers. Great bartender too! Highly recommended.

Poor Customer Service

By sandra g |

the customer service supervisor Chris should have some intense training in customer service etiquette. during the first phone call with him to get answers on fees and trips for our center to take the ferry, he was very rude and talked down to me and the teacher who initially called to ask about pricing for our parents and children. It's really sad that people are like that and then he even had the nerve to laugh at me when I clarified to him what we were asking. Chris talked down to and belittled the teacher and it really upset her. She didn't understand why he was being like that. If this is what supervisor customer service is represented by, that's a sad shame. Even sadder, is that people like Chris have a job in customer service and represent an organization like the Cape May Lewes Ferry, which deals with people on a daily basis.

Fun Trip

By tangi1 |

We decided on an alternate route driving south this year and we are so glad those plans included the ferry. Easy website to navigate, answers all your questions and able to purchase tickets in advance. Lucky for us is was a calm day and the crossing was delightful. Food and beverage on board and the afternoon departure was not very busy this time of year. Plentiful seating and some beautiful nautical views. Well organized and affordable.

Where are the rules for bikes!!!

By Carol B |

My husband and son and I wanted to take out bikes to Cape Henlopen for the day. We were told where to stand and we were told where to enter perfect. We put the bikes on the bike rack. What we didn’t know was we had to wait for the middle row of cars to leave. Cause we were never told. So we got yelled at for that and we were not told we couldn’t ride off the ferry, cause there was nothing written anywhere on how things are suppose to be done. What bothered me even more is that we kept doing the wrong thing cause we didn’t know. I looked on the website to see if there was anything written on the procedure of the bike process and nothing. I actually think it’s very important to have some signage on the ferry of how the procedure takes place of cars, bikes last. Cause when you board it’s the complete opposite. Who knew. And the staff not very understanding towards you for not being aware. I apologized to one of the staff members and said “I’m sorry, I wish I knew the rules”. Her response was, “ I wish you did too”. And honestly I really started thinking how dangerous it is not to know what to do. So if there was signs by the bike racks at least on the procedures in the order and way we come and go off the Ferry it might actually be a safer way. Considering everyone with bikes were looking around not knowing what we were supposed to do.

Great way to enjoy Two Beautiful Beachtowns

By Paula F |

First let me clarify, taking the Cape May-Lewes Ferry is not a short cut to NY if you’re heading NORTH from Maryland or Delaware or SOUTH from New Jersey to Virginia Beach or Norfolk...
What it is , is a fun & relaxing boat ride that you can take your car or bike on and get to explore two beautiful unspoiled beach towns with lots of good restaurants and shops.
Highly recommend it and making advance reservations for the ferry which fills up fast during the summer months.

Very accommodating

By Happy Traveler |

We made reservations one way. Wouldn’t recommend it because when you try to get back the ferry is often sold out! We had some very nice folks who put us in standby when there was no standby and got us on! We prayed, waited and God was good! We also give kudos to the ferry reps and security on the Lewes, DE side. We appreciate their efforts in helping us get home on a very busy weekend! Thank you!
