Waterfront Attraction

By Russ Lacuata |

Chicago Riverwalk has become a popular destination for locals and tourist alike. The waterfront attraction boast cocktail bars and views of some of Chicago’s most famous buildings and when the weather is warm you can take a boat tour.

Worth a walk

By Rita H |

It was a great walk. You really get to see the Chicago areas of interest. We loved that there where we could stop and have a drink or a bite. Also, many areas where we could stop for a little break and look at all the buildings, and activities in the river.

Very nice

By Joseph S |

It's a very enjoyable way to sit amongst the architecture. Vendors are pricey, but we'll worth a stop.

Nice views but could use more food and shops.

By Richard Z |

I think I expected more. Reading the description it said there would be lots of little shops and restaurants along both sides of the river. There were very few shops and maybe a handful of restaurants.
We stopped at the beer garden, which was nice but didn't offer too much in the way of food.
I would otherwise agree that the views of the river and buildings were nice to see. I just wouldn't recommend expected too much more.
Also, the parking nearby ran us over $40 for a few hours to be there.

Relaxing, Scenic and lively scroll

By TravelMyty |

Peaceful, fun and lively area to view the skyline, watch the cruise boats and have a good time. I'd recommend taking a cruise down the river.

Surreal views

By Sophie |

Great if you just want to walk and admire the buildings and the river, also plenty of places to eat and drink that are reasonably priced.

A must if you are in Chicago.

By Miguel Gómez |

This is a must if you come to Chicago. The Riverwalk is one of the best things you can do, you walk next to the river, seeing all the skyscrapers and the boats passing by. You can eat or take a drink in some of the many restaurants and bars that are in the riverwalk, and take the architecture tour that tells you the story and information about the skyscrapers. Please do the Riverwalk, you will love it.

Walk along the river

By DLP |

This is a lovely area along the river. It is clean, well maintained and has beautiful views of the city skyline. It is a peaceful and serene place to walk at any time. It is lined with water activities, little museums and eateries. The river is crystal blue and in conjunction with the amazing architecture it really is an ideal location to catch a bite to eat with some ambiance.

Tour to view the city

By Andrea Santos |

A place to walk and contemplate the city. You can choose the boat ride as well. But walking is enough to experience the city and the climate.

Lots to do

By beth ann k |

The entrances and stairways are so pretty. It's has so much activity with restaurants and things to do.

Chicago's best free attraction

By BrakiWorldTraveler |

Chicago is a pretty expensive city. However, to admire its worldwide famous skyscrapers and river scenery you don't need a penny.
Just enter the Riverwalk at any place and follow it. You'll pass by many astonishing buildings and see them from another perspective.
We did it early morning and at night - felt safe all the time.

Great Day Along Chicago's Beautiful Riverwalk

By Kent D |

My wife and I spent the day in Chicago to celebrate our 46th wedding anniversary. We enjoyed just walking along the riverwalk, watching people, enjoying good food and taking one of the Chicago Architecture Boat Tours. The Chicago river is bustling with tour boats, rental boats and kayakers which can constantly be viewed as you walk along the river. Many of Chicago's amazing buildings surround the riverwalk area. It is a fun-filled and relaxing way to experience a beautiful part of downtown Chicago. Other downtown Loop hotels, restaurants and attractions are within a few blocks of the riverwalk area. We will definitely be going back before cold weather sets in.

Worth taking a night stroll or sitting to have a drink and people watch.

By Jamie L |

Chicago has spent a ton of resources revitalizing the river and it shows. The Riverwalk is terrific for a date night. If you don't have kids, go at sunset and spend some time just sitting, having a drink and watching people. Great way to spend an evening.

Well Worth a Visit!

By JB81ontheroad |

If you have some time to kill in Chicago, I can't think of a better place to spend it than the Riverwalk. It boats such fabulous views of the Chicago River and the city's architectural marvels.

Another fun way to see Chicago

By bolkin |

A fun stroll along the Chicago River, with restaurants and enjoyable views of the high rises. Lots of areas to take a break on a hot day, people watch, and watch the boats and people going by. There are steps to get on and off the Riverwalk.

Nicely done way to move along the river!

By Heidi g |

Hubby and I drove to Chicago from Traverse City, MI (5 1/2 hrs) on a Friday through Sunday for an amazing wedding weekend of our niece. We stayed near the Riverwalk at the Langham, the wedding hotel. We enjoyed our short but full time exploring part of the Riverwalk on the Saturday before the wedding ceremony along with taking an architectural river and Lake MI cruise (90-min/viator.com). We found many cafes and restaurants, markets, and more along both sides of the river. It's not very wide so it can get crowded but folks were mostly considerate. Lots of dogs on leashes. Lots of various boats to watch or ride on: dining boats, personal craft, kayaks, tour boats, etc. Views of so many old and new buildings. Nicely decorated with art and plants/flowers. Fairly clean. Bridges across river have staircases to access the Riverfront. Fountains, lights, benches, walls, etc. to use while there. Highly recommend during the daytime. Was safe. Not sure about dark time/safety but the buildings would be neat to see at night - so take a river cruise for that to avoid any potential unsafe areas of the Riverwalk at night.

The River Walk Great Experience.

By Aurora R |

If you only have time to visit one place in Chicago make sure to see the River walk.
Gorgeous path along the river with plenty of options for boat rides, seating and eating all along the river. Great place to enjoy the architecture of the buildings lining the riverbank. The city has done a tremendous job in making this area a very enjoyable experience.

Beautiful!!!

By Donnette D |

I love walking around this area, it's my favorite when I visit Chicago. The views are so pretty from basically every angle. Especially at night!!!

Great to see !!

By Christina B |

The River is easy to find and so many locations you can stop at along the river front. Worth the time to see the area. Very clean and beautiful flowers everywhere!! The hard part is parking, but very doable and a lot cheaper. Just have patience. We both have some knee issues going on right now so we didn’t want to park & walk blocks upon blocks to see everything in downtown area.

Must Visit Place In Chicago🔥

By krishna |

The Chicago Riverwalk is indeed a must-visit attraction in the heart of the city. With its serene waterways, lush greenery, and breathtaking architectural views, it appeals to both locals and tourists. Whether you seek a leisurely stroll, a peaceful spot to savor the surroundings, or a variety of activities and dining options, the Riverwalk has something for everyone. It's a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, providing a tranquil and scenic refuge right in the heart of Chicago.

Walkway next to water with tons to do

By Laurie K |

River walk is a walkway right next to the river which goes for a few miles and on the way you can stop have lunch, a coffee, a drink or glass of wine, hit a restaurant, cute little shops, lots of places to stop use your computer, read a book and just have a nice talk with a friend.

At night it is all lit up so there is never fear of not seeing where you are going. You can watch the boats float by, listen to the boat tour give some cool facts about the architecture etc.

It's very peaceful at night with all the surrounding buildings lights glowing on the water causing a beautiful reflection plus the smell of fresh air and water is so soothing.

You can go quite far and it is a great walk during the day so much to see I totally enjoyed the walk every time we went we seen something different. All the sites and noises were so different then home.

Great experience

By Emily263 |

An nice street to walk around you can walk as much as you want . I recommend anyone to visit this part of the city whenever you want

Inner city engagement

By Becswa |

We really enjoyed our walk on the river. It was nice to be close to the water and to see the kayakers and boats go by. We ate at a cafe that was WAY WAY overpriced, but at least the food wasn't bad. There were a good amount of people around, but not overcrowded. It felt alive and it was nicer/different than walking on the street level sidewalks.

Great Walk

By Avery K |

Awesome walk along the side of the river! Long and a bit tiring by the end but absolutely worth it, the best spot to see a ton of amazing architecture like Marina City, and lots of entrances/exits to get back on the street.

Possibly nicer in the Summer than Winter

By Paul S |

We walked along the Riverwalk for an hour and sadly in the summer it must be fantastic but on the day in question it lacked any character but for walking it's a great viewing point of Chicago

Stunning

By AlexanderD |

This is one of the world’s most incredible urban locations. Walking along the water amidst all that grand architecture is an experience not to be missed. Truly stunning.

Beautiful!

By Christabel A |

I would walk down the riverwalk every day if I lived in Chicago! The water is so serene and beautiful, there's a wide selection of food and different activities to do as well. I really enjoyed being here!

Winter views worth the chill

By Findlay Kaye |

What an absolutely breathtaking experience! This is the perfect spot to soak in stunning city views—especially magical in the winter. Just a heads-up: it gets really, really cold, so bundle up in your coziest layers! But even with the chill in the air, the atmosphere is so serene and special that it’s totally worth it. I left feeling refreshed, inspired, and already dreaming of going back!

Chicago is so beautiful

By Soner203 |

You can see Chicago's skyline through the river walk. It is absolutely beautiful! Walkable and manageable. The base way to see Chicago downtown

Great walk along the river

By Stephanie M |

This walk along the river has nice views of the buildings. Many little shops and eateries. Lots of places to sit and relax. The walk is CLEAN! Felt safe along the walk, even at night.

Nice walk, but not a must see

By Reeni01 |

I mean, if you want a nice walk. Sure. I would recommend it but wouldn't say it's a must see.

I walked a portion of it with my 5yr and had no issues. It was safe and easy to get to

Great Walk in Downtown Chicago

By Toni T |

Our group of 10 older adults spent a few days in Downtown Chicago so we walked along the River walk to all meals. We were able to view the river walk at all times of the day and night. We appreciated the wide sidewalks in good condition with good lighting at night including the twinkle lights from businesses. Enjoy peaceful early mornings and people m-busy day times and evening
Accessible walking

Well done

By CaptMancuso |

The Chicago Riverwalk is one of those urban park ideas that was actually well executed. It costs NOTHING, offers great views of the river, great views of iconic buildings and has some history attached.

If the weather is acceptable, take some time and enjoy a well planned, well built, urban path.

Don't forget to spend a little time at the Vietnam War Memorial.

Beautiful walk

By S S |

There is spot to see on the river walk. It gets u away from the traffic, and u get to walk along the water, see the geese and assorted ducks. So its a really nice nature walk. Lots of places to sit and relax.

Blue string in a city jungle

By Olgierd P |

Beautiful place in the center of city jungle. The atmosphere of this place is truly magnificent. Yea... it's a bit crowded but despite that it's really enjoyable. A lot of activities to do, places to eat or just chill.

Enjoyable Walk.

By Rachel & Andy |

Visited: 06/07/2023

Would highly recommend following the riverwalk in Chicago. It really gives you a feel for the place. It is a nice walk with plenty of shops, restaurants and cafes along the way, with the occasional tour boat floating telling you about the city and people kayaking too.
It's a really nice, and free, option to enjoy the city.

Relaxing and the view awesome

By Peter B |

Small nice walk by the river. Watching ships, marveling at high-rises and a small package at the many small mini-restaurants.

Very interesting

By rolfb298 |

The River Walk is very interesting. You get to enjoy the fascinating and diverse architecture Chicago has to offer. There are numerous first class restaurants along the river.

Walking along the Chicago River

By Kimitaka Sho |

There are pleasure boats on the Chicago River, so I recommend taking a boat trip first, but the riverside trails are also quaint and irresistible. There are several bars with terrace seating, so it's nice to have a drink and watch the boat come and go.

Nice place to walk in the early evening

By RoadMan27 |

Pleasant place to walk by the water, stop for dinner or a drink. Sections can get crowded but it is a must see part of Chicago.

Be careful where you get off

By FedeDavide4 |

Not all roads allow you to get off and walk along the river. We got off at the intersection of W WACKER DRIVE and N FRANKLIN ST and arrived at DUSABLE BRIDGE. Along this stretch you can sit on the lawn, stop along the benches and enjoy the city skyline, eat in one of the many places, take advantage of the public toilets (they are very clean)... if you are not tired then cross the bridge and dedicate yourself to shopping along Magnificent Miles

Travel spot

By casshill22 |

Great exercise, is right by the lake, near most hotels and restaurants, but not many bathrooms though.

Lots of places to see along the stroll

By doctorfoxtrot |

It is quite a long walk from the starting point ending in the Michigan area where the Trump Hotel stands . Along the way however you see the architecture marvels , several eateries , restaurants and souvenir shops. Also the tendency to people watch can’t be avoided . Must experience in the city .

Experience and Memories

By veronicagriffith8 |

Each and every detail (architecture, real estate, culture and people) provided opportunities to learn, grow, experience and challenge myself to be a better person.

Chicago Riverwalk

By Neceb805 |

First time at the Riverwalk with my daughter and granddaughter. It was very relaxing and to watch the boats go by was amazing. The most funniest thing was to watch my granddaughter (4 yrs old) wave and say hi to the passing boats. Some in their personal boats waved back and the people who were canoeing waved back at her. It was great and will visit again b4 we leave on the 4th.

Beautiful place to spend an afternoon

By TNGirlVFL |

My husband and I enjoyed walking alongside the river. We stopped at Northman Beer and Cider Garden to have a couple of drinks and watch the boats go by on the river. The Riverwalk is perfect for people watching and boat watching. The architecture surrounding the river is beautiful. Definitely worth a visit while in the city.

One the best parts of Chicago

By Becca |

One of my favorite parts of the city. Awesome place to grab a drink along the river to people watch, hang out with friends, have a casual date, or just watch people party on boats. There's a variety of restaurants/bars along the river to choose from - some with seating or just sit on the seats of the river.
Also a great a place to run along to get access to the lake - but beware the path gets very crowded on nice days with people walking, hanging out and eating/drinking.

Entertaining Trail

By trophywest |

From the Riverwalk, you can take in the city life. Shopping can be done in the stores lining the water. Lots of fine restaurants here also.

Fabulous place

By Eva T |

It is a long walking pavement along the river Chicago. You can watch passing boats, admire architecture of all skyscrapers - and there is a lot of them old and modern, have refreshment etc. Place to watch a busy city daily life.

Chicago

River Walk Cidery

By Bellatrix346 |

Enjoyed the River Walk immensely. Great place to see the architecture and enjoy the passing boats. On our trip, we found ourselves there twice. Once for a casual dinner and once at the brewery and cidery to just sit and enjoy.

Chicago has the best architecture & nicest gardens !

By SHG2013 |

I was really wowed at the beauty of Chicago & especially the River Walk with the nice gardens, spectacular architecture & the blue green water! It was unexpected!😊

A Surprise exhibit

By hwmcdaniel |

Walking along the river walk we saw an exhibit dedicated to all the submarines built there during world war II. Again, a very clean wonderful fall walk.

Fun and relaxing

By Ann K |

A walk along the Chicago River is a wonderful way to appreciate the city's architecture and just take a break from the tourist treadmill. You can have a bite or a drink, stroll along the water, or just sit and watch the boats go by.

It feels glamorous!

By travelwithsachin |

I did this walk in the night...it was absolutely amazing experience to walk on a chilly night on the banks of the river with some of most innovative and historic architecture around you. I did the river cruise later to get the same views in day time. If you do the Chicago ghosts and gangster they cover this with some ghastly stories of SS Eastman and pollution of the river which now seems pleasant and serene.

Nice family-friendly trail along the Chicago River

By Brad 🇭🇰 |

This is a designated 1.25 mile long trail along the south bank of the Chicago River north of The Loop. Opening hours are 6am to 11pm daily and there are numerous access points beside the numerous bridge crossings. The walk is flat and easy and there are numerous opportunities to grab a seat somewhere to stop and enjoy time on the river. There are a fair number of public toilet facilities along the trail as well.

You'll find a handful of bars and coffee shop venues that will open up soon as the warmer months of the year. Visitors can take in the Bridgehouse Museum, historic bridges as well as monuments scattered up and down the trail. You'll see historic skyscrapers that make up part of the Chicago Skyline up and down the river as well as cruise boats plying the waterway during much of the day.

The Riverwalk is a nice little trail one that is worth experiencing if you are staying near the Chicago River or plan on spending time in this area of the city.

An overlooked attraction!

By William Kim |

It seems like the Chicago Riverwalk is unfortunately one of those attractions that is often overlooked for others like the Art Institute, the Magnificent Mile, Shedd Aquarium, Willis Tower, etc. Don't make that mistake! COME HERE IF IN CHICAGO.

You will be amazed at all the architecture surrounding the river, even if you are not much of an architecture fanatic. There are also many places to sit and relax along the way, as well as great food options featuring cuisine from all over the world. The walk is also kept quite clean, which is amazing for a city of such a massive size in North America.

The crowds can get bothersome at times, however, the surrounding buildings, the beauty of the Chicago River and the overall positive, joyful energy of the riverwalk will make you forget about the crowds.

I did not do an architecture boat tour while here, although I did go on one back in 2013. Make sure to do that when in the area, it is not to be missed.

I can't wait to be back here the next time I'm in Chicago!

Walk along the canals of Chicago!

By Florian C |

Very nice view of the Chicago canals. Walking path along the river very nice. You will meet joggers and people sipping coffee on the terrace before going to work.

Spectacular views!

By jodlynn95 |

Terrific stroll with an amazing view! Everyone loved the sights and food. I could walk the Riverwalk every day and not tire of it.

Lovely walk with nice views

By hasu424 |

We enjoyed strolling along and seeing the views. Fun to see the folks partying on their boats (we were there on a Friday night). Several restaurants, breweries and wineries with riverfront seating.

Nice way to get your steps in!

By Shannon |

The river walk was close to my hotel and was a nice place to get your steps in while being in the heart of it all!

Unequivocal and Spiritual

By veronicagriffith8 |

On the day dream walk your and a lazy summer day are unequivocally easy, fun and unequally deserved for me.

Must Visit When in Chicago

By Liz Abigail |

I had the pleasure of visiting River Walk and it was so beautiful and relaxing. I sat on the stairs and enjoyed a drink, than had lunch at River Roast which was so delicious and finally I took one of the River Cruises which was so relaxing. A great place for tourist to visit!

Awesome Sunny Day in the Wendy City

Many places we were able to Walk & take our dogs & children. Started off at the pier. Was very nice walked around pier for two times then as the wife shopped, kids, dogs & I played at park across the street. Kids loved the water shooting out of the ground. Then walked around to look at big building and great architecture and culture of this great american city.

Great place to walk, dine, drink, people watch, shop and even exercise! Several great hotels to choose from. I love the Westin.

Big City Treat

By JAB |

Lake street to Lake Shore Drive and connects to the Lakefront Trail!
Well laid out with plenty to do and see.
City Winery, Tiny Tap, Sweet Home Gelato.
Food, drinks, and great Gelato!
Kayak rentals, sightseeing boats, boat taxis, Tiki boats and dinner cruises.
Walking, jogging and people watching.
Whew!
Relaxing just because.
Enjoy!

No idea why people love this ...

By Bobbysgirl01 |

OK, it was January. So, perhaps not the best time to walk along by the river. However, there was nothing open in terms of restaurants / shops, and the walkway is pretty basic - mostly used by joggers. The only thing of note was the opportunity to play a game of 'spot the blood spatter', as we saw evidence of some events that obviously took place in the wee hours.

We have a good imagination, and could see that in the heat of summer this would be more pleasant, but the overall feel of the place doesn't make me want to see if I'm right.

Awesome!

By JustAAdventurer |

The views were astonishing! Crowds are not too big here, either. You can transfer to the Lakefront Trail at several parts, which makes it convenient. It’s super scenic, and it shows how amazing Chicago architecture really is. Definitely a must-see while in Chicago!

Rebuilt with walking in mind

By Cass111 |

The rebuild of the area was worth the wait. It’s a lovely area to stroll, sit and listen to music. Lovely in the summer, fall. Just lovely.

Lovely walk along the Chicago River surrounded by the amazing Skyline.

By Dave F |

This is a must do thing on a trip to Chicago. It is a lovely riverside walk alongside the Chicago river at the bottom of the Magnificent Mile. The place to catch another must do thing -the Architecture River Cruise. - Really brings the Chicago Skyline to life. Plenty of opportunities to sit, eat drink along the Riverwalk .

Chi town

By Ree Ree A |

Great time! Jazz fest was great. Good food. Parking expensive but it was okay since we had a blast. Worth it!

Nice

By L H |

The Riverwalk has gotten better & better over the past few years, now with many restaurants & bars, also nice landscaping, interesting benches/seating, play areas, a kayak rental place at the east end by the lake. Hopefully places will stay open later this season to give people outdoor options for socializing.

Well done Chicago

By JP Explorer |

A great place to relax and get away from the buzzling city streets. I am really glad that Chicago follows other major cities and adopted to make the river accessible to its population. All in all I would recommend to take the stairs down from the street level and follow the riverwalk at your own pace.

Where architecture meets the river!

By Kaylee Bingo |

Chicago is a fantastic city to either live in or explore as a visitor. The Riverwalk offers a beautiful spot to admire the river and the city’s stunning architecture.

Wonderful walk

By stevebintley |

A lovely, clean and peaceful walking route in the centre of the city. There’s plenty of seating options along the way as well as free toilets which is great. There’s numerous different steps to ascend to the street above and there’s various drinking and eating options along the route too. It’s a fabulous route to explore when in the city and a must-do for anyone’s first time in the city.

Nice walk, nice place to take a break.

By mrjobs2016 |

Walked along the Riverwalk with family on a brisk April afternoon. Walked from Clark and Lake CTA stop to Magnificent Mile. Lot of nice views, and a nice place to rest with seats - good chance to rest, and to sit and talk. I did notice plaques in the ground that showed the original location of Fort Dearborn, which was the original Chicago settlement. Also found out that represents one of the four stars in the Chicago flag.

Beautiful in the snow

By Nathan W |

We were loving the Chicago snow, and wandered along the Riverwalk at the peak of a downfall. This is stunning in fresh snow, although seemingly lots of places waiting for renovation. Definitely a serene break for the main city.

Do the Walk

By William L |

The Riverwalk exceeded my expectations by far. The access and views are amazing. Great spots for families or catching a drink along the river. Chicago is truly a gem, so much to offer. Get your camera ready for a workout.

Neat Area for a Boat Ride

By tink8009 |

We enjoyed seeing the Chicago Riverwalk during meals and a guided architecture boat tour. Al was a wealth of knowledge.

This is a must-do. The epicenter of the city.

By psudino |

The riverwalk is very nice and of course the buildings surrounding it are some of the most famous in the city. As someone who lives outside NYC I very much appreciate a beautiful skyline. Chicago is one of the my favorites in the country. My favorite building is the famous parking garage on the Chicago river with the round structure and the cars visible. That building is so unique and a Chicago original.

The river itself is the heart of the city and cuts right through the middle of it.

Lights at Night are Lovely

By siochain |

Walked back to the hotel from the restaurant. Very active and very pretty. Lights on many of the buildings and one in particular plays a video which was very colorful.

Beautiful even in dead of winter (cold and windy)

By springbreakdad54 |

A walk along the river with the breeze flying up off the water doesnt sound like a good idea in winter but the stroll I took with my son while on vacation in Chicago was just fantastic. It was clean and seemingly safe (there were workers straightening up stuff at least into the early evening). My son recently started taking photos artistically and he found lots to capture along this walk.

Great Hangout

By thattexascouple |

We loved walking on the Chicago Riverwalk. There are numerous bars and restaurants along the way for you to enjoy dinner or a cocktail!

Amazing views

By WaiPRUSA |

Amazing Riverwalk! You can appreciate the Chicago's downtown infrastructures and the river cutting through it. It is greatly maintained, and with plenty of space and places to stop to enjoy its views, drink, eat, take a few pictures or board a boat.

Great time in Chicago

By laura l |

My first time in the city and I loved it I had a great time walking around doing the Riverwalk going to the theater walking along Roosevelt and South Michigan going to Grant Park. I cannot wait to move to Chicago next month. Such a beautiful city in so much to do.

Cold walk, but worth the views.

By Buks vH |

Ingenious use of the river to create a walkway for strolling, jogging etc. in a wonderful city.
Great views at night and daytime, away from the busy streets to get a little peace and quiet.
Great gardens too and intriguing Memorial for the Vietnam Veterans.

Beautiful area

By Seamus48 |

What a great place to stroll and see the River and buildings. Restaurants line the walk, cool bridges, pretty flowers, artwork, fountains. Great people watching spot.

Great civic asset

By Alex B |

No surprises here – the Chicago Riverwalk is an extensive riverside pedestrian right-of-way that mostly hugs the south bank of the Chicago River, just north of the Loop. (The official Riverwalk is virtually continuous with another section of “Riverwalk” along the river in the adjacent West Loop, but they may technically be separate.) From what I’ve read, it looks like this was only developed within the last twenty years as part of a reconstruction of Wacker Drive, in some places by driving pilings into the riverbed to expand the amount of available “land” for building. The path is popular with joggers, walkers, and even commuters walking to work. There are plenty of places to stop and sit if you want to take in the views of the city. People who like getting exercise or enjoy architecture will probably appreciate the Riverwalk the most, but I would recommend that just about any visitor give it a look.

Beautiful Chicago Riverwalk

By Hawaiian555 |

Chicago River Walk continually transforms and is currently very beautiful. Great way to spend an afternoon or evening with many restaurants and sitting areas for takeout. It’s romantic as well.

Fun activity

By Bee80204 |

It’s fun to walk along the river on the Riverwalk path. There’s vendors you can book an architecture cruise from, rent kayaks, day cruise, rent bicycles, dine at. We also saw the U.S. Navy Submarine Memorial, a historical information display about submarines which passed through the area on their way to war after Pearl Harbor. And children’s play areas. There were kids playing with their parents which was heartwarming. It’s warm when the sun is beating down so make sure to hydrate and wear sunglasses and a hat if necessary. There are portable toilets if you need provided by the businesses for their customers mostly. Hand sanitizer stations are scattered about.
It can get crowded and hectic with people getting on board the boats and kayaks. Watch out for bicyclists as some ride quite fast. Fun to sit in the rest areas on the benches provided and people watch or have a drink at a restaurant and look out on the river. A few restaurants are O’Brien’s Riverwalk Cafe and The Northman Beer and Cider Garden.
Would be nice if you could walk all the way to Navy Pier but you need to exit the riverwalk and get to the road level before getting on another path to continue the journey. The Riverwalk is open from 6am to 11pm. It is a 1.25 mile long path and is divided into four areas - The Confluence, The Arcade, The Civic and The Esplanade. The path allows you to enjoy the Chicago river at your own pace.

Put on your hiking shoes!

By alicemmiller |

This is a fantastic way to see the city and view the lovely architecture. Lots of seats to stop and rest. Unique view of buildings you can only partially see when walking the streets.

Beautirul

By CristianSF1012 |

If you are visiting Chicago you will walk around the Riverwalk, drink a beer, enjoy a sunset, it is a must

Ride

By kafioxin |

Great location for walking. Very beautiful to walk on the river between the buildings of Chicago. We highly recommend it.

Nice Place to Stroll

By mary f |

Nice area to stroll. There were loads of people walking their dogs. There were people smoking weed everywhere, I guess it's legal. Plenty of restaurants and bars. Plenty of places to sit on steps and relax. There was a Vietnam Memorial for those from Illinois who lost their lives. Clean public bathroom. I think an evening stroll is in order.

Beautiful Free Rendezvous

By megghin |

A great way to see Chicago’s river district. We began by the lake and worked our way into the city. It is so full of personality and a great place for taking a break from the hustle and bustle of the upper streets

A Must-Visit

By Charles S |

The famous Chicago Riverwalk is a multi-use public open space located on the south bank of the main branch of the Chicago River in Chicago, extending from Lake Michigan and the Outer Drive Bridge westward to the Wolf Point area and Lake Street. The Riverwalk is an absolute must-visit attraction when in the city, it contains restaurants, bars, cafes, small parks, boat and kayak rentals, plus a Vietnam War memorial, and other amenities.

Still Under Development

By Darryl G |

You can see where this attraction is heading. Once it becomes full of restaurants and shops, it will be very nice to visit.

A nice walk, but not a must do

By Valleyblue |

The river walk in Chicago is a pleasant enough walk, but compared to others, like in San Antonio, Chicago's is not the best. While it's nice watching the boats go by, the walk itself is not that scenic. I think there are better walks (along the lake shore, for instance) that are much more worth the time.

Plenty of seating and a good place to people watch.

Fun to stroll during some free time in Chicago

By Lungdude_10 |

I used up a couple of free hours during a recent trip. Even with a little rain, this would be a nice way to burn up some free time. Lots of neat shops and hotels to stop off to check out.

Amazing views of Lake!

By Melissa |

The riverwalk was amazing! Great walk along Lake Michigan and seeing Chicago. Great for walking, running and biking!

I love love loved this!

By Cory L |

Such a relaxing and beautiful area to walk! Very clean with many different restaurants and breweries/wineries on the walk. Gorgeous views. A bit crowded, but we didn't have any trouble getting a table during different times of the day.

Great way to both see the busy river traffic and avoid all the street traffic lights

By christopherbO9687MP |

The Chicago Riverwalk is a great way to both see the busy river traffic flowing by and avoid all the street traffic lights if you were walking on the streets above. The Riverwalk has numerous cafes and restaurants to visit, particularly on the southern side (where the walk is continuous from the Confluence of the North & South river branches to Lake Michigan) . The Riverwalk is always busy with dog walkers, joggers and us tourists, so there's always something to see.

A must visit in Chicago

By Maya |

I had been to Chicago before but had never walked the riverwalk. It’s so pretty being right on the water surrounded by fantastic architecture; the water is so blue it looks fake. The walkway is almost two miles if you walk the whole thing and goes all the way to the lake. There are many restaurants, shops and cafes along the way if you need a break. There also seating built into the walkway at a few points. This is by far my favorite part of Chicago and is true a must visit.

beautiful buildings up close and personal

By graymar22 |

We stayed on the Riverwalk so spent some time exploring the many buildings and interesting places along the way.
The many and varied bridges well worth the walk over, pieces of sculpture/artworks to view, the buildings so many beautifully designed....
Well worth the stroll and look.

Beautiful!!!!!

By YourHelpfulWendy |

Located less than 0.5 miles away from the hotel where I stayed, this beautiful River has a walkway where I enjoyed the view the three days I was there.

Also, on NYE night, that was the point where I watched the amazing fireworks at midnight.

Great place to walk and enjoy architecture

By Ramesh A |

Chicago riverwalk is a beautiful place to catchup city architecture and also have a good relaxed stroll along the river. There are restrooms along the walk. There are lot of cafe, bars, quick eateris along the walk and some of them have great activities.
One of the must do while visiting Chicago, you can join and exit along the route but would worth doing the full city walk.

Well done, Chicago

By Robert L |

We did the River Walk in freezing May and still (partially) in lockdown. What a wonderful project.
To walk and see the river, buildings, and bridges up close is really nice. All the breweries, wineries, and eateries were empty, this is still a great way to see the area
Kudos.

Chicago river walk views

By Muse |

Stunning views of Chicago’s waterways. A delightful walking trail runs alongside the river, perfect for a peaceful stroll with scenic city vistas.

First trip to Chicago since 1986 and it was very pretty sights at every angle!

By Baybug2 |

The views were all around. The river was kinda dark, but I can not wait to go back when they turn it green for St. Patrick's Day. It was a windy day, but it wasn't too bad down by the river. It was a different story out on the Navy Pier. Overall, it was a pleasant sunny walk and views just every angle.

Top 5 destination in Chicago - Must see !

By Michael |

I was in Chicago for a conference, but I figured I would enjoy two extra days since I haven’t been on holiday since November 2019. Must see for anyone visiting Chicago. Terrific views everywhere and very walkable. Tons of nearby pubs and restaurants . Thousands or good photos to be taken! Please visit !

Lot’s of things to watch

By GolfUMK |

Chicago’s Riverwalk is a “must do” while visiting Illinois’ biggest city. If the weather is nice thousands of tourists and locals stroll every day at the south bank of the Chicago River. The walk is a 1.25 mile public space with bars, cafes and restaurants. Music is everywhere coming from the loudspeakers at the boats or entertainment businesses at the walk. Only downside is the trash. We’ve even seen a beaver swimming in the river between plastic bottles and aluminum cans. Walk officially closes at 11pm.

beautiful boardwalk / cement path along the river, with nice views of the skyline. some restaurants along the way, and also quite some people, so be careful with social distancing.

Fabulous Chicago Riverwalk

By Irina |

Chicago Riverwalk is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful parts of the city. If you drive or walk from Lake Shore Drive, you can access the Riverwalk from Wacker Drive, and enjoy its "Market" part with all the restaurants and cafes, public sculptures, outdoor recreation areas. In summer various concerts are organized in the shade from huge trees -- on the green lawns of the Riverwalk. Boat tours and river cruises are very popular too, also adding nice action and light colors to the scenery, and splashing the turquoise waters of the gorgeous Chicago River.

The Chicago Riverwalk gives fantastic views of the city stunning skyscrapers, on both sides of the River. On the south side of the Riverwalk there's the Lakeshore East neighborhood, with the upscale residential high-rises and modern hotels -- The St. Regis Chicago, Swissotel, Hyatt Regency, Aqua Tower. The opposite side -- The Near North Side, also called Streeterville, is also built up with contemporary buildings, hotels, facing the Riverwalk.

One can admire the views of some iconic skyscrapers on this side of the Riverwalk: Tribune Tower, Wrigley Building, Trump International Hotel and Tower. This part of the Riverwalk (called "Civic") -- is located right near Michigan Avenue Bridge (DuSable Bridge), and it is also very attractive. Further down the Riverwalk ("The Arcade" part) is Marina City, and the unforgettable Corn Cob Towers.

Along all its length -- 1.25 mi, or 2 km -- Chicago Riverwalk has various access points to it from Wacker Drive, where the metered parking is available.

I visited the Chicago Riverwalk in summer and in the late fall, and to me it looks irresistibly attractive at any time of the year!

So Much to See!

By Moaner T. Lawrence |

As December is almost around the corner again, I cannot recommend the Chicago Riverwalk enough. The architecture of Downtown Chicago really has its own beautiful aesthetic that almost feels neo-noir in the winter. My wife and I did the walk a few times, and I can attest that the walk never became dull. Whether it was the middle of the day or the evening, it didn't matter. It was something I could do every day, and always discover something new. If you're a fan of the Christopher Nolan Dark Knight Trilogy, you'll probably recognize bits and pieces along the walk from the film series. Highly recommend!

Great walk throught he heart of Chicago

By phvi2617 |

With all the magnificent architecture surrounding the Chicago River, taking a stroll on the Riverwalk is like walking through a spectacular canyon of glass, steel, and concrete. Whether you walk though all of it or just a couple blocks, you'll be treated to great views of the Windy City.

A must do while in Chicago.

By jlormeau |

What a fun way to spend a lovely summer evening. Put aside a couple hours take a stroll along the river. This walk provided an opportunity to people watch, have a bite, sip on a beer, or just watch the world go by. My teen daughter really enjoyed it.

WORTH A RIDE ...

By ErMatador |

As per the title. Very interesting urban regeneration adopted by the city of Chicago, not only to revitalize the area but also as a naturalistic recovery of a highly polluted area in the past. I have also attached several photos with information on the tracks of a little history that I invite you to deepen because it is very interesting (to deepen the fact that the flow of the homonymous River has been reversed with an engineering work of very high complexity)
The area is well maintained, very safe, very livable for adults children and even pets...
Absolutely Recommendation a ride if you are in the area, if you like the genre also because there are many really nice places overlooking the River
PS : incredible that since the last time I was in the area (about a decade ago) the water is no more than a dull brown but it is a green! and there are both floating plants and “good” insects like bees in the area )

Evening stroll

By Tracy F |

This Riverwalk is a very peaceful walk. The environment is friendly and the walk provides some beautiful sights along the river. In most locations you can buy alcohol and drink as you walk.

Very nice walk along the Chicago River.

By Peter-DG |

This is a constantly expanding attraction. I like to walk it when going from the train stations to a Michigan Avenue or Navy Pier destination. Lots to see along the way and places to stop for a snack or drink. Amazing how clean the river is these days after being nearly a sewer may years back.

River walk 'n gawk

By CubanWaters |

Any time of the day a great path along the river to take a stroll on. All types of buildings around, boats going by and a few open spots for a meal, beverage and such. It's safe and closes at 11 pm, I believe. Goes from the heart of the city to pret near all the way down to the lake front.

Nice casual walk along the river.

By 415Cyclist |

Nice casual walk along the river. Lots of places to stop for a coffee, quick bite, people watch. Highly recommend.

One of Chicago's newest and most popular attractions

By Taylor B |

I have visited cities that are situated on rivers, like New York City and San Antonio and St. Louis and New Orleans and Richmond and Nashville and Milwaukee, but none of them has what Chicago has--the Chicago Riverwalk. Begun in 2001 and yet to be completed, it is a multi-use public space located on the south bank of the main branch of the Chicago River extending from Lake Shore Drive and Lake Michigan to Lake Street and Wolf Point. It contains bars, cafes, restaurants, small parks, play areas, seating, boat and kayak rentals, tour boat docks and one of the largest Vietnam War memorials outside of Washington DC. The Chicago Riverwalk is a popular gathering place for tourists because it is close to some of the other popular attractions in the city, including Millennium Park, the Magnificent Mile, Grant Park and Navy Pier. Walk along the riverfront and admire the city's famous architecture and historic landmarks, including the Wrigley Building, Tribune Tower, Marina City, the Merchandise Mart and Trump Tower. Stop at the Bridgehouse Museum, located on the Michigan Avenue Bridge at Michigan Avenue and Wacker Drive. At State and Wabash is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Plaza, which consists of a terraced lawn, a waterfall and a central pool. It bejewels the city's waterfront and embodies what a memorial plaza should be.

Nice stroll along the water

By Eva |

The Riverwalk is lined with great restaurants and coffee shops. A stroll along is a nice change from he busy streets and gives you another view of the city.

What could I say about this place, stop saying it your pictures.
Visiting it is to enjoy its landscapes, food, urban music and something special that only special places have.

The Chicago River runs through the heart of the city

By sanju_222323 |

There are few better places to enjoy the outdoors than the Chicago Riverwalk. The Chicago River runs through the heart of the city, parallel to the lakeshore, and is known for its large number of movable bridges. In just two miles, there are 18 bridges, each with the ability to allow large boats to pass.

The 1.25-mile pedestrian walkway on the south bank of the Chicago River is the perfect place to take a stroll and observe the city skyline. what I found unique is - it's not a monotonous walk.

Did you know that the Riverwalk is made of six separate coves? Each cove has a unique identity and nickname (Part of my R&D

The Marina (State to Dearborn):
The Cove (Dearborn to Clark): Stop for a snack or rent a kayak
The River Theater (Clark to LaSalle)- plenty of trees and greenery.
The Water Plaza (LaSalle to Wells)- great for families. Adults can relax around a fountain,
The Jetty (Wells to Franklin)- See floating wetland gardens
The Boardwalk (Franklin to Lake)- perfect place to see the Chicago River’s three branches.

it is one of my favorite attractions in the city, the other two are Navy Pier & Millenium Park - I can keep these 3 to the top -best experience in Chicago.

visit the public gardens and art displays, or grab a meal at a popular restaurant or bar overlooking the Chicago River. The Riverwalk is home to many dining options and hosts special events throughout the year, and you can also find several river tours and cruises that depart from the Riverwalk.

Public art is on show throughout the pedestrian trail. But Art on the MART is perhaps the Riverwalk’s most famous work. This is the largest video-projection art installation in the world, taking up approximately 2.5 acres of the MART’s river-facing facade

bw guys, let me tell you a fact- it was not as beautiful in the past as you are seeing right now- strolling along the picturesque Riverwalk, it’s hard to imagine that it was once a shipping channel — and a smelly one at that. After a lot of effort and dedication, though, it has become one of Chicago’s star attractions

The Riverwalk is also the epitome of romance as the sun goes down. Listen to live music, and sip wine on a riverside patio.

Riverwalk in a lovely city

By William S |

Riverwalk in Chi-town is a must. Amidst bars, eateries, and the action on the water allows tourists an opportunity to soak up the beauty and history of the Windy City. A must-see for all. Lotsa fun. People watching is prevalent from the myriad of cafés, pubs, and restaurants. Just steps, literally, from comfortable hotels. Many benches and park-like settings for the accessibility of patrons. A beautiful sojourn in a beautiful city

Free Chicago River Experience

By Henry’s Take |

Trail Series, Part 17
If you’re wanting to explore the Chicago River and are feeling all “Sporty Spice”, we’d recommend that you try walking or running along the Chicago Riverwalk.

End to end you’re only talking about 1.5 miles of flat, paved trail, so this experience is accessible to nearly all travelers. We found the trail pretty busy during the early evening, so safety was not a concern whatsoever (even if enjoying it alone at a similar time of day). However, the amount of foot traffic did make running at our desired pace challenging. While bikes, skateboards, etc. are permitted, just know that you’ll be doing a good deal of weaving and bobbing around others.

You’ll find numerous restaurants (and a public restroom) in case you are interested in either and the photo opportunities are seemingly endless.

If you’re searching for a safe (and free) way to enjoy the Chicago River, this one is hard to beat.

And that’s…Henry’s Take.

This is a fun way to spend the afternoon and try some of the restaurants along the river walk. You can also access some of the boat tours from along the river walk which is a nice addition.

Relaxing break from the hectic city

Great walkway to stroll and run on. You can wind around and admire the awesome architecture and sit down on the grass/benches to picnic or people watch.

Perfect! A must Chicago do

By Theresa C |

Best part of Chicago vacation! Had great weather 85 degrees. Walked 45 min from out hotel to the river walk and it really is very pleasant to walk down. Stopped for a frozen drink at Tiny Tapp and watched the ducks hop in the water to ride the waves after a boat would go by. The kayakers seemed to be having fun too. Something I’d definitely do if I had more time here.

Really enjoyable!

By CaptTrouble |

My husband and I had a very enjoyable long walk along the Chicago River. The Riverwalk runs along the south bank of the main branch of the Chicago River from Lake Shore Drive to Lake Street. It was apparently opened to Wolf Point in 2017. (Info on the range of the riverwalk can be contradictory so....)

There are restaurants, park benches, a kayak rental, and other activities along the Riverwalk. The latest thing to catch our attention is the WWII Submarine Memorial that lists all of the submarines made in Manitowoc, WI that passed that exact spot on their way to war, after December 7, 1941. (I have tried to get this memorial listed on TA and they said it doesn't meet the necessary criteria. Really? Send in your requests!)

There is a beautiful fountain on the opposite bank of the river that is fun to look at too.

Great views

By Felix B |

Great trail along the Chicago River, which is THE promenade of Chicago in good weather. In every space between the bridges a restaurant with terrace.
Delicious food, great beer, fantastic views (people watching!), great job.
Only downer...prices quite high, beer around $9.

A very pleasant walk

By Martin P |

We walked from the Willis Building to the Magnifecent Mile and included the Riverwalk as part of this. It is a very enjoyable walk under the bridges. The only downside was the lack of cafes or bars that would have made a good stopping-off point.

Marvelous Views of Chicago Skyline and Chicago River

By James G |

The Chicago Riverwalk offers wonderful views of Chicago architecture.

In addition to seeing the skyline with its magnificent buildings, the walk affords nice views of the Chicago River, boats on it, people in the area, and artwork.

Shops along the walkway sell food, drinks, and souvenirs. One shop even offers kayaks for rent.

But the magnificent views of the Chicago skyline and its buildings are the highlight.

Riverwalk is an easy walk on a relatively level sidewalk. But accessing Riverwalk from some locations requires going down steps from street level to it.

There’s no cost to walk Riverwalk. Walking part of it on Monday, June 20th, 2022, was one of the highlights of my first visit to Chicago.

Can be busy but always something to see

By timb42014 |

This is a great walk along the riverside. The path is zoned and so has different characteristics. We went after a boat tour - it was a little busy but still a nice cool walk

A great walk!

A great walk that leads to the Navy Pier. We stayed at the Hyatt Centric and it ideally located for this district. This walk was just in the right place.

Excellent hike/bike trails

By namefunnel |

The Riverwalk and the walk along Lake Michigan are really wonderful. The bikes and pedestrians are mostly separated, and it's fun to go between the sandy beach and the chain of restaurants and activities. Lots of people, interesting buildings,, very relaxing and yet good exercise.

The best

By Daniel K |

The best in Chicago.lots of seats on the stairs. Lovely views.theres even securities walking around . Free toilets as well

The walking area extends along the river. Those who want can watch the river. It's a bit like the embodiment of the places in books where depressed people stop and listen to themselves.

Best Thing to Do In Chicago

By Lynda W |

The best thing to do in Chicago. It is so pretty and a lovely walk with interesting things to see along the way. Lots of environmental programs keep the river healthy. Got to see inside one of the bridge houses and it was really interesting!

Good Walking Spot

By Globaljoan |

I enjoy taking my morning walk here because it is pretty, away from the traffic, and long and interestingly enough to repeat frequently.

Wow!! Much improved

By Caribbean Traveler |

We had not been to Chicago for awhile and wow were we impressed by the difference in the Riverwalk. Vastly improved. Felt quite safe and walked it for over a mile. Many bars and restaurants. Really a fun time to watch the boats go by while enjoying music and family. Later at night, they project art onto the merchandise mart. That was fun to see as well.

Dissapointed

By Glenn R |

First, I did not go on the boat ride; perhaps I should've, but what I was told didn't interest me. The water was not exactly clean (coming from NYC, I can't talk!), but outside of the building along the way, there's practically nothing unless you wanted food. I'd think this would be a golden opportunity for booths selling souvenirs.
The worst part- getting down to the Walk from Michigan Ave & up at another location (don't remember street). At least on those 2 areas, handrails were ONLY on 1 side. I almost fell 4 times trying to hold on to the non-handrailed side on my way down. Why no guardrails on both sides are beyond me.
Overall, if you just want to take a boat ride to look at the architecture & whatever else they show you, or for a lazy afternoon, I suppose it's worth the trip. Otherwise, no. As a side, I've been to the one in San Antonio; sad to say(almost shocked!) that Chicago's is a poor 2nd.

A great walk just about anytime of the year

By mavarick2018 |

The river walk downtown is just amazing. Great views, great people watching, great craft brews and great food. Love watching the tour boats and all the locals jogging with their dogs up and down the river walk, A great way to travel below the streets and avoiding the intersections. A must see when in downtown.

Gorgeous, do not miss it

By Anda L |

The most beautiful part of Chicago, especially at night, but also by day.
Nice places to eat too, with patios and wonderful views.
Really majestic, cannot miss when visiting.

Great walking. Great views of River. Great people watching

By CarolAnn G |

It’s a great way to see so many sights along the River and all the river boats. The Riverwalk is really clean and nice to walk along. Great restaurant! Highly recommend.

I LOVE IT

By PRAIRA |

It starts at 333 Wacker Drive by the river and continues all the way to the lake. A wonderful experience is the walking platform built on the right side of the river as you walk towards the lake, which is very long, very enjoyable and offers very special visuals. It is as if you are in the water, around you are skyscrapers, boats, people walking, running, resting, observing the surroundings, seating areas, eating and drinking places. Seeing this beautiful city by walking around here should definitely be on your first to-do list, make sure you make time. You will enjoy it very much, exploring the city from the river will make you incredibly happy.

Summer Riverwalk Memory

By MaryinChicago |

The riverwalk area between the Columbus Drive Bridge and Lake Shore Drive was especially beautiful the other day. The lovely renovated sidewalks and grounds were a welcome sight. The additional seating and picnic tables are great places for some relaxation. The food, tour boat and kayak rental businesses blend well with the flowers and trees.

This alone epitomises Chicago

By David H |

Found the River Walk with it's many and varied bars, restaurants, and food outlets to be an excellent way to take in the atmosphere of Chicago. Great views of the iconic sky scrapers, views of the river with its historic bridges, easy access from every cross street. Be aware though it gets VERY busy and crowded on weekends.

Provisions. Take some supplies.

By Ramon Stragos |

There are moments that justify a whole trip on their own.
The visual impact you make the first time you reach one of those bridges and turn your eyes is simply unforgettable. Only comparable to that feeling you feel when you get to the foot of one of those icons of humanity you've seen in a thousand photos.
Those five seconds of silence generated around you confirm that the impression is just as intense for the rest of the group.
It will be impossible to forget this moment.
I still find it hard to believe that all those buildings are actually functional and not just a carefully designed stage. Looks unreal. Just an image taken from a catalogue of posters or puzzles of endless pieces.
You can walk it a thousand times and many more. Any time of the day. Or the night. Sure you will always find a new corner, another detail, a new angle for one more photo. And another one. And more.
Oh, yeah. Take some supplies.
The temptation to sit on one of the many terraces on your walk is really irresistible.
The tourist inside is powerful. And while you know you'll pay your whim extensively, in a way, it's part of the game. After all, I'm just a tourist on vacation. You have to stick to the platitudes and pay that "tourist tax." It's inevitable.
And it is understandable that prices are ridiculously expensive. In a city and such an environment, it is even normal. No miracles. But $23 for two beers in a plastic cup... escapes all the comments I can think of. Absurd.
As unforgettable as the view around you.
Go with the flow. There are plenty of people with bags from all the fast food chains you can imagine riding their picnic at any time in the myriad places there are for the occasion.
Now I understand why.
I think it's flat.

A lovely walk along the river

By K848 |

We walked along the river a few times during our stay here. It is lovely being right down by the river and gives you a different perspective of the skyscrapers above you. It felt very safe at night as it is all lit up. There are numerous restaurants and coffee bars along the way which all looked lovely!

We enjoyed our walk along the river, actually did it several times. Stopped at the Northman (?) for an expensive can of wine and a beer, - just a nice way to spend an hour or so watching the boats go by.

Peaceful Moments

By Tanya T. |

This is one of several outdoor options in Chicago where you can enjoy the waterways, public art, and biking. This time of the year (with lock down) is especially quiet for reflective moments. There is limited recreational services but it's a great spot to enjoy the city.

A Must Do

By Daryl C |

I'd heard about the Riverwalk but didn't really have high expectations. I was wrong. This path is awesome--day or night. There are plenty of places to stroll and eat. And, after dark, there's wine tasting and beer tasting. It's got quite the buzz and attracts a huge crowd. For good reason. Also, in the evenings, the Riverwalk hosts a light show on the side of the art mart.

Chicago has rediscovered the River

By Beemer01 |

The Chicago River, long neglected, has been brought back to a vibrant life. The River Walk is magnificent. Take a walk the length of the East channel, enjoy a bite to eat and a glass of wine, take in a low key museum tour in the McCormick bridgehouse museum, see the massive gears used to open the Michigan Ave double decker bridge and get unique views of Michigan Ave.

Keep walking East and you’ll wind up at a busy sailboat harbor on sparkling Lake Michigan.

A Walk to Remember

By Sachin0408 |

The Chicago Riverwalk is a great way to spend a day and tour this beautiful Windy City. Cruising along on a boat is also a wonderful way to enjoy the sight. One can enjoy the beautiful Chicago's skyline through the river walk. It is absolutely serene. The entire Riverwalk is walkable and stress-free. As per me it is one of the best ways to see Chicago downtown.

The experience is really relaxing and unique. If you are lucky, I am sure you will come across live music performers in the various riverbank pubs too.

Nice for leisurely walk

By Sanna |

The Riverwalk was nice and serene for a leisurely walk during sunset, we combined parts of it with the Lakefront Trail that overlooks Lake Michigan, before looping into Millennium Park. Lots of Canada geese, which made it feel more like you were out in nature.

Chi-Town RiverWalk

By Josue C |

The Riverwalk is one the best places to visit when in Chicago. There are actually two foot paths, aligning both sides of the river. The paths are full of shops, ice cream parlors, coffee shops, restaurants, and bars giving you options in case you get hungry while strolling. This is a scenic way to get from side of the city to another. I felt relatively safe while walking, it was well kept, and well lighted at night time, though I recommend keeping up current events in the city, to make sure of your safety. The river walk is home to many docks, where many people keep their pleasure boats, as well as, a few touring companies, that have tours up river deeper into the city, or down to the Lake Michigan. Weather permitting you'll be able to see folks take their boats out or have parties. As the Riverwalk expands, so those the entertainment, docks, and food scene. on my next visit to Chicago, I will revisit the Riverwalk, to take a boat tour, and relax strolling through.

Riverwalk

By Eva J |

If you visit Chicago there is a good chance you'll walk on at least part of the riverwalk at some point. Some areas are better looking than others.

Would love to return in the future

By Roch65 |

We both loved the Riverwalk. If I lived in Chicago, I would definitely come here on a regular basis. The city has done an amazing job of creating a space along the Chicago River, where you can walk and gaze at the beautiful architecture, take a break in one of the many public spaces where you can relax a bit, and stop to have a meal while sitting along the river. We ate at O'Briens. We felt quite safe walking the length of the Riverwalk.

The Chicago Riverwalk

A Look At Chicago Not Seen by Everyone

By patshea2016 |

One morning last week, after walking down Chicago’s Magnificent Mile, I walked down the steps located on the east side of Michigan at Wacker. As I walked down the steps, quite a few people, who seemed to be tourists from other countries, were making their way up the steps. Once I got down the stairs, I walked along the Chicago River. There were men working along the north side of the river while I walked along the south side of the river. There were boats on the river. Some other people were also walking along the Chicago River. As it was a Chicago November morning, I enjoyed the chance to enjoy the city. Will return in the spring or summer when more people are enjoying the riverwalk as well as to check out some of the restaurants.

Stroll the Riverwalk

By Navigate10553207728 |

This city knows how to do a Riverwalk! Lots of places to eat or grab a drink. There are places to join river cruises, and rent kayaks to use on the river. It’s a really nice “vibe”. It is family friendly.

Enjoying nature in an astounding urban setting

By Taylor B |

The Chicago Riverwalk is a linear park along the south bank of the main branch of the Chicago River, extending from Lake Michigan and Lake Shore Drive westward to Lake Street and Wolf Point. It contains restaurants, bars, cafes, small parks, boat and kayak rentals, tour boats and river cruises. Other attractions include Ellen Lanyon's Riverwalk Gateway at Lake Shore Drive and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Plaza at State Street. Whether jogging, biking, strolling or just sitting under shade trees, locals and visitors alike can enjoy the tranquility of the Chicago River and nature in an astounding urban setting. But's there more. The Riverwalk's expansion is ongoing. Still to come are plans for a final extent beyond Wolf Point Towers, northward to the proposed Bally's casino near the intersection of Chicago Avenue and Halsted Street. Construction of the Riverwalk began in 2001. More recreational options for Chicago's "Second Lakefront" are expected to include floating gardens, a bridge and fishing piers. Architecturally, it is one of the city's most impressive landscapes with the Michigan Avenue Bridge, Tribune Tower, Wrigley Building, Trump Tower, Marina Plaza and the Merchandise Mart included among the spectacular views. Or just sit on the terrace and watch the boats go by. Tourists are encouraged to begin their visit at the McCormick Bridgehouse and Chicago River Museum at the southwest Bridgetower at Michigan Avenue and Wacker Drive.

Walk the River

By Dick L |

The Riverwalk is just that. You walk along the River and see the tour boats cruising, see the amazing architecture from the River's side and lots of earteries along the walk. Great during the heat of the summerand during sweater weather. Lots of steps to get down to the River level and watch for dog walkers too.

Chicago Riverwalk Provides Some Great Views of the City's Architecture

By TravelingSoccerLoon |

There are several ways to experience the beautiful architecture of downtown Chicago. One of the best ways is to take an architectural boat tour on the river. However, another option is to stroll along the Chicago Riverwalk. Located on the south bank of the Chicago River, there are several different access points. This is a quiet and relaxing walk and offers stunning views of some of Chicago's most iconic buildings. The views of the Wrigley Building and Tribune Building near the Michigan Avenue Bridge are amazing and are especially rewarding at night when everything is illuminated.

Well landscaped, seasonal flowers, view of boats and river

By Bill B |

The Chicago Riverwalk is well landscaped, with seasonal flowers and a view of boats and the Chicago River. The path along the south side of the river is paved with numerous small establishments for eating and drinking. Tour boats depart all along the shore. Helpful maps and rock and wood seats are interspersed. This is a very pleasant afternoon excursion.

Tourist in my own town 🔥

Chicago is amazing, must see Starbucks Reserve, Girl and the Goat, Chicago sports teams, lakefront , Museums and a LSD drive to Bahi Temple just to name a few!!!!

Great place for a stroll!

By MichiganMelissa04 |

The Chicago River Walk is wonderful. It is so cool walking along the river. If you are lucky, you might see one of the drawbridges go up. We meant to stop at the Biergarden but did not have time. It can get a bit crowded as it is quite popular. What a great place for a stroll!

The best part of Chicago!

By SS2015 |

Don't miss this one. We walked the entire riverwalk and didnt want to leave. In between stop to grab a drink from one of the pubs and chill next to the river. The evening breeze, the lights, the energy if just superb. It is my fav spot in Chicago. Just watch for weed smokers - the smell is awful!

Riverwalked it

By hockeyaw19 |

Did a bit of the riverwalk on a warm day in May. It was largely in the sun but had some areas of shade. Some restaurants and eateries are along the path. It's a nice way to see some of the city from a unique vantage point and away from some of the hustle and bustle of traffic.

Sip some wine and relax

By Zsolt C |

Really relaxing and unique athmosphere just for strolling along and tasting some great wine and listening to live music performers in the various riverbank pubs.

Very Nice and felt like a neighborhood

By Travel4Fun |

We liked waling along the water's edge and enjoyed a top for a beer at the Chicago Brewery. The water seemed clean and it was fun to see the kayakers.

Easy walk, pleasant sightseeing

By steve k |

Really pretty to walk around. Can be chilly in September, but just bring a coat. This is the first thing that I would do with guests/tourists in Chicago, and the Architectural river tour would be the second.

Charming

By Oliwia P |

a very climatic place, many nice bars and restaurants with the view of the river. It is a nice trail to walk through during the day, as well as in the evening.

A good peaceful place for walking

By Joseph R |

The city has done an excellent job in building the Riverwalk. It is peaceful and the views are gorgeous. Plenty of places to dine and shop too.

Walk Along the River

By Thomas V |

A great part of the city to take a long walk. It is an organized pedestrian area along the Chicago River where you will get a good tour of the dramatic architecture and skyscrapers. A lively part of the city as well.

Beautiful walk in the city

By Maddie |

If you only have a few hours to explore Chicago - spend some of that time here. The Chicago Riverwalk is beautiful and lets you see some of the city's well known buildings, memorials, restaurants, bars, and more. The Riverwalk is a great place to visit any time of day, and is centrally located near many other popular attractions in Chicago so you can easily work it into your itinerary. We stopped in Chicago for only about 4 hours on our road trip but we are so glad we went to the Riverwalk! It also makes for some beautiful pictures!

A great way to experience the Chicago, not just see Chicago

By Lori T |

We were fortunate to visit on a sunny warm day in May, and the Riverwalk was the perfect way to experience Chicago. The pathway is paved, smooth, and wide enough to accommodate 3 to 4 people across. We saw people walking, jogging, and even biking, though signs say to walk bikes. There were also lots of dogs on leashes. The walkway is right along the river about 8 feet above the river, so it offers fantastic views of the skyline as well as boats on the river. There are lots of benches to sit and relax along the way. Highly recommend as a must do in Chicago.

Beautiful Romantic River Walk

By Greg Ehrsam |

Stopped by Sunday afternoon for a casual stroll. The river actually appears green so makes sense why they die it for St. Patrick's Day. You'll why Chicago is one of the most beautiful cities in the world from the River Walk!!

Gorgeous!

By Stephanie M |

This is such a beautiful and bustling area of the city. The views of the river and architecture throughout the city are gorgeous.

Beautiful area and walk

By StephenCross |

The river in Chicago is fantastic as are the bridges and cafe / restaurant and buildings along the riverside. So much to see.

Enjoyable Stretch on Riverwalk

By plesprue |

The Riverwalk is really nice. We covered some of it on foot, and did a boat tour as well. There is a really distinctive feel with the Riverwalk area and the city buildings around

Views, food and booze. What more could you want?

By bassjwp |

Really just a beautiful area in the city. River views (obviously!), lots of restaurants, a beer garden, some playgrounds, plenty of seating. Being right along the water's edge helps keep the temperature down a bit even when it's hot and humid. Plenty of people watching and things to do for all ages. Dog friendly, too!

Relaxing

By kct33 |

The walk has lake mitchigin on one side and parks on the other. You can walk for about 25 miles or cycle…..6 was enough for us😂

A lovely place to walk

By DriveAllNight |

Quintessential Chicago - you can’t be here without walking along the river. Again and again! Loved looking at the architecture as we walked.

Wish you could walk the whole way, both way.

By Anikabella |

LOVE LOVE LOVE that Chicago made a walkway around the river. BUT I think they should exercise their rights to spread it along the whole way.... It would make it even more of an attraction.

dont miss while in Chicago

By camefromfairfield |

We couldnt miss this during our first trip to Chicago because our hotel (the Renaissance) was on it and our room made us enjoy every bit! BEAUTIFUL and clean, and the skyscrapers look so nice sparkling in the sunshine and lit up at night. Dont miss the Wendella boat tours! We did the sunset cruise and loved it! Eat at the many restaurants on Riverwalk (we did RPM (amazing), City Winery, and Brewhouse).

Lovely afternoon

By Shieldsnan |

Spending time on the Riverwalk is a lovely way to enjoy some of local Chicago. Joggers, lovers, pups, kayakers, families.....
Also, lots of eateries on the water and Surprise... restrooms!!!

September on the Lovely Chicago Riverwalk

By The_Loup_Garou |

Because we are in Chicago for business meetings for my wife, many times per year, I get to roam the City, and take it all in. Most of the meetings are in the Loop/Magnificent Mile areas, so the Chicago River factors into my explorations, and very prominently. Depending on the weather, I always try to spend time on the Chicago Riverwalk.

I am not sure when I discovered this pathway, but it was probably not until the 3rd, or 4th visit. I just looked down from one of the bridges, and noticed the Chicago Riverwalk, and found a sign to it, with stairs leading down. I walked, and walked, and fell in love.

On this September visit, I was once again along the Riverwalk, taking in the sights. I had previously walked the pathways in the Spring, Summer and Autumn, plus a few brave forays in the Winter, but fewer.

This September, the weather was not the best, and it was obvious that the “season” was winding down a bit, as some of the concessions were beginning to close for the Winter. Now, the Chicago Riverwalk is really several things: first, it is a linear park, with nice walkways, on both sides of the Chicago River. It is also an area for various concessions, from restaurants, to activities boat docks, to bars, to light retail. Plus, it is a place to capture a bit of the history of Chicago, as much of its earlier development was focused on the Chicago River. Next, it is an “art gallery,” with many art installations, scattered along its length.

In the past, I had usually concentrated on some of the areas of the Chicago Riverwalk, closer to the DuSable Bridge, on Michigan Avenue, as that was near where we usually stayed. However, on this visit, we had taken a Chicago River Architectural cruise, and while we had done two before, one aspect that impacted me, was just how far the Chicago Riverwalk ran - I only really knew a small portion of it.

I walked to the end, at the harbor, for the first time, and because of that river cruise, walked well beyond the farthest point, around The Loop, than ever before. I visited two parks, that I had never noticed, but one seemed so new, that maybe it was just a very recent addition.

All of my walking of the Riverwalk was during the daylight, but much of it is well-lit, as evidenced from that river cruise in the evening.

Now, and though it runs along both sides of the River, there are some breaks, where it heads back up the stairs to “ground level,” before descending back to the shore of the River. I also observed a few more areas, where there was construction - on area on the N. Columbus Drive Bridge, and then another near the N. Wells St Bridge, close to the Water Plaza - close to where I discovered one of those parks.

So, for much of two days, I walked, and walked, and in between, spent an afternoon/evening charting the Chicago Riverwalk, from the River itself. I gained a new perspective, and a new appreciation for the Riverwalk, than I had before.

One of the beauties of the Chicago Riverwalk is that it can be appreciated in tiny bits, or as a great walking/running path, and because it does not cross any streets, is often a much quicker “thoroughfare,” than walking up on the surface - though depending on where one is starting fron, and going to, they might also “get their steps in!”

Even if one takes in only a tiny fraction of this linear parkway, the Chicago Riverwalk is a must-do, and any portion is worth the effort.

Must see

By Bowmanator22 |

This is an absolute no brainer! Excellent restaurants, coffee shops, and views! So much to do, and so many people. Not too busy to jog though. Lots of people exercising, and even more eating.

Beautiful, organized, clean and super charming city

By mirianromagnoli |

This city is wonderful, worth the tour and worth the boat ride too. It's worth a parade at the apple next to the riverwalk.

vacation

By Kathy B |

Lots to do. Great restaurants, shops, etc. Walking and bike routes available. Buses to different parts of city

Pleasant stroll

By patlv23 |

I didn't think we had time to visit the Riverwalk but the hunt for cheaper parking helped us end up there. Definitely a nice place for a stroll or even for outdoor dining. It offers a different view of Chicago's skyscrapers. It's also fun watching the numerous boats going by.

Beautiful river, lots of boats, crowded with tourists

By Archie |

We stayed at the Westin so it was accessible to the riverwalk. We enjoyed a ghost and Gangster tour which also speaks about the river. We walked along the river walk. Its very clean and safe. The water is a beautiful green. There are boat cruises , Kayak tours and so many restaurants along it. Its packed with tourists. There are points to climb up to the main streets.

Riverwalk

By Raymond K |

Very active and popular place to be. Loads of restaurants, bars and shops. Great place to have a bite to eat or drink your morning coffee while watching all the activity.

A must!

By Dave & Steph |

In downtown, you can't avoid the Riverwalk! It is on the south side of the river and not on the north side as shown on Google Maps. From Wolf Point to the Franklin Bridge, it leads along the river at various stations. Beautiful!

Nice place but avoid certain activities there

By Sue C |

Nice way to spend the day in Chicago, but please don't waste your money and go to the Immersive Experience there. I took my whole family which cost me $182.00. What a waste of money. They project pictures of animals on the walls from the African Savannah. We enjoyed the Ferris Wheel although it's a pretty short ride. Next time, I'd just walk around and skip the touristy things. They're not worth spending money on.

Awesome city

By Alexandra M |

It was always a dream for me to visit here just because most of my friends are living here and finally I had a chance to visit here and explore the area it is awesome

The Chicago River(walk) is simply "pure Chicago"!

By Erna |

Of course, a Chicago River Cruise has its charms but the Chicago Riverwalk is another story! On foot you are traveling at your own pace and can stop as often as you like to marvel, take photos, take a break.
Overall, the riverwalk is not that long but due to the many things you can see, it just takes you much longer than you would if you were traveling elsewhere! Depending on the time you have to run slalom around the many other tourists, joggers, etc.
It's definitely the most beautiful place in Chicago, especially between the west end of the Riverwalk and Michigan Avenue. This is THE section that is architecturally and gastronomically interesting!
The eastern section, east of Michigan Avenue, is a bit less spectacular but there you can also find the popular kayak rental, for example, if you are interested.
If I don't want to run the whole route for time or energy reasons, I would definitely choose the western section!

Attractions riwerwalk

By Akbar Akh |

Walking in riwerwalk and a boat tour in riwerwalk really interesting and had fun moments for us. You can walk and enjoy the green riverside walkway that passes through the south shore and the city center. You can also board cruise ships and learn about the history of the city's most famous attractions

Beautiful Riverwalk! It's so lovely!!!

By Kinh N |

By staying at CQ Hotel, right along the Riverwalk, we can walk to it at anytime, day and night for funs, drinks... also you can find for foods, restaurants near by along the river... You will love it! We are living in Houston, TX... so we visited San Antonio Riverwalk many time, but it was lot more narrow than Chicago Riverwalk!

Enjoyable walk

By AnutterTraveler |

I walked several times along this walk during my stay in Chicago. During the weekends, people hang out in bars along the walk. You can have a view up close of many landmark buildings and bridges in Chicago.

Something for Everyone on the Riverwalk

By Foodange |

We must have walked the length of this at different times during our stay.
There’s something for everyone – bars, restaurants, play areas, boating, a museum, trees and plants and of course towering skyscrapers.
Magnificent!

Stop if you are nearby, but don’t make a special trip.

By deborah l |

This is worth seeing if you are in the area. It’s a pleasant way to spend a sunny afternoon . Be sure to bring a jacket!

Great evening activity

By Rachel W |

Worth the time to stroll down the riverwalk. There is a lot of boat activity to watch. There are several places to get drinks or sit down. My only request would be more shopping in that area.

A great way to get a different view of the city

By TheTravelingBoyMama |

This is a great way to get a different view of Chicago. Be sure to go both during the day and at night. There are lots of places to stop and grab a drink or bite to eat. You can even sit and watch the river or people watch.

Great Views

By bdimz |

We walked from Michigan Avenue to the Willis Tower and back. There are great views of the buildings and bridges. It is also a great way to stay out of the stronger winds at street level. It also allows you to travel faster as you don’t have to wait to cross the streets.

Nice neighborhood

By pattyH16 |

From Millenium Park on foot to the Riverwalk past the countless large buildings.
The Riverwalk is along the water, very pleasant with many drinking and dining options.
At Taco Rio we had a good taco with a nice glass of wine.

a day on the water.

By vcgroomwilson |

beautiful time here. on a sunny windy day. loved exploring and took it all in the beauty. Amazing how everything fits and the effect is so beautiful.

Decent walking path

By Marina M |

Easy access from street level and worth visiting at least once. Not much on river level besides the path itself. Seems popular for runners.

Great Stroll

By Susan D |

Great place to walk in the city. Unfortunately, some of the eateries have not reopened or they are permanently closed. The steps up and down can be tough and we only found one elevator by the Apple store. But it’s a great area to get a feel for the city and the river.

A lovely addition to downtown Chicago.

By j b |

On a nice day, this is a great place for a stroll. There are numerous restaurants along the way to get a meal or have a drink. Since it weaves under the Chicago River's numerous bridges, the congestion at the corners makes it a bit challenging for runners and cyclists. In fact, I wouldn't recommend it for bicycles and runners should expect to have to slow their stride frequently when the walk is busy. The views are nice and we had a nice lunch sitting alongside the rail.

Enjoy the Chcago Riverwalk

By Travel_away_10 |

Chicago city has taken a lot of effort over the years to make the Riverwalk a go to and must visit place when in Chcago. Along the riverfront, lot of restaurants, pubs make it very interesting. The Vietnam memorial and the open theater seating are things to see.

Great place to relax and take a breather and get off your feet.

By Robsaga |

Great spot to enjoy the city and what the river has to offer. Grab a meal, and some water and claim your spot along the river. People watch, read a book, draw.. and dare I say, nap...

New Year's fireworks

Chicago Riverwalk - fabulous way to see the city.

By Jen W |

The Chicago Riverwalk is fabulous! Beautiful, clean and tidy area, with a great choice of bars and restaurants. We felt very safe, and it wasn't expensive. Perfect way to enjoy the river or just for people watching. Would definitely recommend a river or lake boat trip to fully enjoy the Chicago skyline and buildings, and there are plenty to choose from.

Chicago Riverwalk Enchated

By SaraJets |

If you want to experience a picturesque view of the water along with fantastic scenery this is a place that is not to be missed - plenty of room to walk and see the splendor of the ocean. Unlike San atnonio- which has a crowded view everyone is packed in. Everyone gets to enjoy the beauty and nature that you can experience with the Chicago Riverwalk- it is a must see for tourists.

Restful and lovely

The Chicago River may be polluted but the walkway along it is beautiful. Much work is being done to make it a great place to stroll. It was extremely hot when we were there but shade and benches were plentiful.

Our Favorite Tourist Attraction in Downtown Chicago

Fantastic view is amazing the place is the best place to enjoy in the company of my family and the attention is good thank you so much

Lots of activity

Spent a lot of time along the riverwalk. Lots of restaurants to choose from, beer gardens and a lot of seating areas to relax and people watch and watch all the activities on the river. Art on the Mart was really cool - takes place every night. Also there was free fishing on weekends. Plenty of boat rides to choose from. We walked many miles each day, went all the way to the Navy Pier.

Free Tours by Foot is a Great Way to Go

By Bgoodtoall |

Our guide on the Riverwalk Tour was Andy. Enjoyable, relaxing and educational experience. Andy has a good rapport with clients, including older folks like us. He stopped discreetly and waited for us to catch up. We learned about the architecture along the Chicago River and did so in a relaxed, casual manner. Lovely that we could decide how much to pay him. Of course, we were respectful and paid him well for his time. Walk was on April 14, 2022 for a 2 hour tour.

Loved the vibe!

By GillRouch |

What a beautiful new addition to Chicago. We found the Riverwalk after a long morning walking down the Mag Mile. The restaurants and bars have a great vibe. We went late morning and by lunch they were very busy. We were told that creating a riverwalk was now mandatory for new builds next to the river - great idea!

Popular walk on the southern shore

By Mitek25 |

It is a fairly long walk along River on the southern bank- offers art, museums, activities , relaxation , something to eat..

Unique and Beautiful

By Irina |

Chicago Riverwalk looks appealing at any time of the year, attracting people to stroll on walkways along Chicago River, dine in restaurants, cafes and bars, relax on shaded benches, visit music concerts and art exhibitions, visit a Vietnam War memorial, admire the stunning views of the city architecture -- iconic historic buildings, and modern skyscrapers -- hotels, business and residential high-rises, making up a fabulous and unforgettable Chicago Skyline.

All 1,25 miles (2 km) of Chicago Riverwalk are well-maintained and landscaped. Chicago River is flanked by the Riverwalk and Upper Wacker Drive in the south, and the north bank is a modern residential and business area (River North). The Riverwalk crosses the city from east (Lake Michigan and Outer Drive Bridge) to west, it is constructed 20 feet (6m) below the street level. The pedestrians can access the Riverwalk from various, marked points on the Upper Wacker Drive. Chicago Riverwalk is pet-friendly for well-behaved pets.

There are great views of the Riverwalk from multiple Chicago bridges, that connect the Chicago Loop and River North. There are boat and kayak rentals, available for visitors of the Riverwalk. These days, Chicago Riverwalk (its construction started in 2001) is being expanded and planned to be developed further to the west: from State Street to Wolf Point -- i.e. Near North Side, Loop, and Near West Side community areas of Chicago.

Chicago Riverwalk is one of the most beautiful sites of the city. Will be back soon and enjoy its splendor again!

It's the opposites

By 🌍Travel-Uwe🌎 |

Of course I had already heard about the Riverwalk - but my expectations were exceeded: Impressive high resolution
house architecture, ships/boats under
various kinds, a great promenade with many restaurants/street food shops and then again almost ailing bridges with rattling trains - the mixture does it!!!

Lovely stroll in Chicago

By Kathy K |

This is by far one of the highlights of my trip to Chicago....very friendly way to spend some strolling time in a great attmosphere.
Would highly recommend an architecture cruise on the river and you can get your tickets right on the riverwalk.

Safe, clean area of the River Walk

By Razorfish |

My wife and I stayed at the Westin on the River Walk during a recent stay in Chicago. We used the River Walk nearly every day our our 5 day stay. We also took an architectural boat tour along the River. It was a safe, clean area that we thoroughly enjoyed.

Another must do, stop off at the bars for a drink.

By MPP2703 |

Lovely walk by the river, well worth doing the whole walk, great views of the majestic architecture of the city. And plenty of bars to stop at for a refreshment or two...

Sightseeing

By Lord_Tater |

Absolutely loved the view, length of the canal, and how close it is to everything in the city. I’m hoping to come back after the pandemic.

Do it on a great summer day when the sun is out

By TERRAvelista |

This is something I highly recommend to do, especially on a hot summer day, in a pair of flip flops and with water in hand:

- just like in London, you can walk near the river on both sides of the river which is simply great, passing lots of amazing buildings
- lots of bars, restaurants and places to sit
- nearby there are lots of shopping areas
- it is very clean and appears to be safe probably up to a certain time

And most importantly is free of charge.

Don’t miss this!

By debssun |

One of the best Riverwalks I have experienced! So much to do and see including kayaking, fishing and boating. The many different restaurants and bars offer a variety of delicious foods and drinks. Plenty to do for the children too! Lots of different places to sit and people watch. Lots of interesting architectural styles of buildings to view too! Bathrooms are spread throughout. Don’t miss this awesome Chicago gem!

Stroll.....

Great views no matter what time of day! Chicago is such a beautiful walk and the scenery doesn't disappoint. Definitely make time in your schedule to take this stroll.

An enthusiastic limited free tour by a Chicago Greeter

By paul p |

Nancy , the tour guide, may have have been initially overwhelmed with the 18 in our group , and , another approximately 10 more from various places. We explored the 1.25 mile Riverwalk ourselves , after the free one hour tour conducted by local people from the Chicago Greeter program at 11:30am (Friday through Sunday) near the Chicago Bridgehouse Museum. ( on this particular Saturday, we went to the sign , near the museum, past the restaurant , which included words similar to ‘tour begins here’, to not miss the tour guide).
She was able to handle all (28+) visitors with confidence and enthusiasm. While she did not have a battery-powered megaphone, she was able to loudly project her voice, and , turned herself in various directions as she spoke to the group that surrounded her. She helped us hear what she was sharing. An adaptable person, she shared details about the buildings and sites that she chose to highlight. When the tour ended, a person wanted to give her a tip. She declined the tip, and suggested that a review on TripAdvisor would be appropriate. So here is a review. Well done, 5 stars to you, Nancy, and thank you.

Despite the pandemic, Riverwalk is a worthwhile experience

Writing reviews during the Coronavirus pandemic is challenging, to say the least. What hotel, restaurant or attraction hasn't undergone a transition that has affected its commercial value? Many venues have been forced to close and many others wish they had. It isn't the way it used to be. Same goes for the Chicago Riverwalk, an open, pedestrian waterfront located on the south bank of the main branch of the Chicago River in downtown Chicago. It extends from Lake Shore Drive to Lake Street and contains restaurants, bars, park seating, boat and kayak rentals and other activities. Most of all, it affords visitors of a spectacular view of the Chicago skyline, the river and some of the city's most iconic buildings, including Marina City, Wrigley Building and the Furniture Mart. The pandemic has created limitations but plans call for additions and expansion, floating gardens, fishing piers, playgrounds, more restaurants and bars. For now, enjoy the view.

The walk along the turquoise river

Such a beautiful place to stroll, soak in the atmosphere and energy of the city. Excellent opportunity to enjoy the views of magnificent Chicago buildings along the way, have a drink or dinner outside on a warm evening, and visit spectacular all-glass Apple store.

Fantastic place, we walked along the river, amazing life, cafes and bars in the surrounding area.
It's worth the afternoon walk there.

Must do

We always go to Chicago for business trip and to visit family. We always do the obvious stuff, lake the parks. It’s our first time being here and it was very nice during summer experiencing the Chicago energy. It’s great way to the architectural buildings for free. To be honest it’s better that’s the boat tour and get some exercise while doing it and hop taste all food and drinks c the yacht on river. It was a pretty and nice experience.

A very pleasant place for a stroll along the Chicago River with many places to sit and enjoy the view. There are play grounds and kayaks available for rent.

Chicago is a beautiful city, and the river walk is the best way to really take it in. Day or night, this was a beautiful walk. The light show was fun to watch as well!

We ate lunch one day, then had wine several times on the river walk while we were in Chicago. There are half a dozen drinking and eating places spaced out and usually places to sit and watch the traffic go by on the river and the people walking by it.

beautiful

Very pretty walk by the river. Many spots had trees, bushes , flowers. Several restaurants. Interesting to look at the buildings at your own pace.

It's nice to just stop and watch

It's quite a long walk from the starting point ending in the area. Beautiful architecture and souvenir shops. It's nice to just stop and watch.

Pretty walk, not a lot open

Lots of closed businesses in April. Apparently many of them don’t open until the weather improves. Beautiful walk, though

My favorite part of Chicago

By Von1287 |

This might have been my favorite part of Chicago! The Riverwalk is spectacular! On one side you have skyscrapers and city and on the other side you have a lake that feels like an ocean. Nothing like it! We rented bikes and had a blast riding through one of the most bikeable cities, lots of bike lanes and we felt pretty safe!

A beautiful place to visit

A lovely area in Chicago, and a great place to watch some boats float by. We saw some kayakers. Lots of people to watch, too. If you want to take an Architectural Boat Tour, this is the place to board. We also walked along Lower Wacker for a few blocks in this area. There are places to sit in an amphitheater area along the river. You can also visit the Apple Store and watch the river from that stop along the river! Lots of eateries along the river, too.

Nice walk

You can take a pleasant walk along the riverbank at the foot of the skyscrapers. There are several stalls for buying food and drinks. Recommended to disconnect from the bustle of the city.

Beautiful sight of the city

Great location for early morning walk

My wife and I walked for several miles along the Riverwalk and loved it. Early its a great spot for it, and later in the day as everything opens it gets extremely crowded but with lots to eat and drink and do.

Great walk at the river.

You can stop for a drink or just walk on the river. Very nice. Just watch out for the runner. They are a bit aggressive

A great way to spend the day...

The Riverwalk is a great way to spend a day. Taking in the boats on the river, the restaurants on and near...If you have time - take in a boat/architecture tour! We did and it was awesome.

Beautiful

I don't know if they color the water in the Chicago River or if it is naturally that color, but it is beautiful. The sunlight sparkles off the water. This is one of my favorite places!

Lovely walk

This is a lovely place to walk. There are a couple flights of stairs you take down to the riverwalk, but then it is super easy and flat to walk. It is pretty crazy how you can go from the hustle and bustle of the Chicago main streets to the serenity of the riverwalk.

Even in December it was nice to walk. You get great views of the architecture in a quieter setting. Grab a coffee and go for a stroll along the river!

The Chicago Riverwalk is such a vibe! Walking along the water, surrounded by skyscrapers, with so many great spots to eat and chill—it’s the perfect mix of urban energy and relaxation. Sunset views there are unbeatable!

What a GREAT space!

Down two levels from our hotel street was the Riverwalk. We found a small Tiki bar named Sand Bar right beneath the location of our hotel. It has a sandy area with tables and cornhole as well as a grassy area along the river where one can sit and watch the boats on the Chicago River as it butts up to Lake Michigan. We played Cornhole and then sat along the river to relax. Later we ate at Chicago Brewhouse Riverwalk sitting out on the patio, we watched folks in boats and on the Riverwalk enjoying the day. The next day we returned to the Riverwalk to sit, relax, chat and watch the boats go by. There were a couple interesting ones. One was like something out of an Egyptian or Roman movie set and the other was a “pedal boat” where all the passengers had bicycle pedals and this drove a paddle wheel on the rear. Both relaxing and fun, the Riverwalk is a true destination in Chicago.
