Awesome way to spend a few hours with the kids

By Nichole F |

You get to be right up close with aircraft, vehicles, tools, etc. and learn about them as well. Go during the cooler months, as air hangers are not air conditioned.

Knowledge and History

By Craneger |

A great exprience with all kinds of early restored aicraft, and other items in displays throughout the hangar. Ask the docent for a guided tour and you will hear all about each aircraft. The gift shop is fun also.

Must see for plane fans, educational for kids

By Mike H |

This is a pretty good comprehensive airplane museum. There are some great planes, like a B-17, B-25, C-47, P-51, etc. The staff are exceptional with kids and it's possible to purchase rides on the planes for a once in a lifetime experience. We took the B-17 ride, and it's unforgettable. Certainly gives a first person perspective on the guts it must have taken to fly those planes into combat. It's amazing.

Great Working Museum

By Eric K |

I happened across this great air museum while I was in Mesa. What a treat. I was greeted inside the hanger by a very friendly and well informed volunteer. He was willing to take his time to explain the origin and purpose of the museum and that was very helpful.

The cool thing about this museum is that there are several WWII planes that are still in working condition. I was about to talk to a pilot that had flown the morning of my visit.

The maintenance hanger is open to the public and it was special to see so many dedicated volunteers working to preserve these great planes.

Well worth the visit.

Tour stop

By Frank T |

My reunion group stopped at the Commemorative Air Force Museum. There are a good number of planes on display. The staff are friendly and very helpful. Do not pass up if in the area.

Fantastic!

By Bob Dean |

A delightful trip to the past Air Force events and air craft. Refurbished to it glory days. For a sample tax deductible contribution you can ride in history!

Informative and interesting

By Emeric S |

We spent several hours there, gained a solid appreciation for the volunteers that devote their time to restoring aircraft. Very worthwhile visit!

My favorite - a living museum

By Cactusgardens |

Small, but excellent displays. Planes are very well presented, good lighting, and you can climb a ladder and look into the open cockpit on some, Have been several times and every time there has been a plane on display outside that you can go into. Also, a hangar next to the main museum that you can visit and walk up to planes under reconstruction. Also, side displays of mostly WW II items. The main reason I enjoy this museum above others is that every time I go there I meet very interesting people with great stories to tell - many of them personal war stories of flying the types of aircraft on display from WW II through Vietnam.

Commemorative but also educational

By BiggieGeo |

I've known about the CAF for a number of years, but today had the opportunity to visit one of the aircraft on the annual summer tour that the CAF puts on every summer I had the opportunity to make a short flight in the B25 bomber touring North America this year. In fact our CAF volunteer was a fellow Canadian! It was absolutely fantastic to see what this amazing group of volunteers is doing to keep the faith to The Greatest Generation.
You don't need to be American or Canadian to appreciate the living history on display. Great job done by all. One day I will get to Mesa to see the Museum.

Something for him.....

By Nancy M |

A trip to Mesa led us to discovered a very unique place to explore and celebrate my husband's military service in the Air Force. The museum is a real treat for a walk down memory lane or just to walk among pristine aircraft. The military memorabilia is really beautifully displayed and educational. The stories of war hero's is a good reminder of the courage it takes for all of us to be free.
Take time to visit and don't miss the gift shop...

Check back into history

By Deborah S-K |

Learn from the pilots who flew these planes at the CAF. My son love the visit and enjoyed learning from the real pilots of these planes.
We got to tour several of the planes. A great idea for an afternoon to learn about REAL history.

For the aviation enthusiast

By bernicone |

Went on a tour with sixteen others. It was truly enjoyable and educational to be able to climb into the planes and get a feeling of how things were. Two of the planes were a B-17 and B-25 or B-26.We were also able to inspect many rebuilt private planes as well as watch a couple mechanics restoring a couple of planes. The people who work on the planes are all volunteers. The tour guide was really good and answered all questions and was very knowledgeable. You could book a ride on one of these planes. Different planes have seating from 2 to 16. Senior discounted tickets are $12.

A Worthwhile Museum

By Pete P |

They have a well maintained group of various aircraft and surely worth the visit. Also plane rides are available.

Living History on Display

By TxWaccamaw |

There are lots of aircraft on display, from WWI to Vietnam. Stearman Biplane to F4 Phantom, even a couple of Russian MIGs. There are several planes that still fly. You can book a flight on a B-17. Most of the volunteer are military veterans and are more than happy to share their knowledge.

Meseum

By deschneider |

It all starts when you pull into the parking lot, an see the planes on the outdoor displays. The quality and restoration of these older aircraft is unbelievable. The information contained in the standing displays is over whelming. They have staff (volunteers) who know the history and can answer any question you have.

Fascinating

By KateandRick |

Took my husband for his birthday, could have spent 3-4 hours here. So much history and information. Really appreciate their efforts! Worth the trip!

Super trip

By Anca N |

Beautiful museum for those who like aviation, I liked it and I recommend everyone to visit it The more you explore, the more amazed you will be.

Veterans will enjoy this museum

By bad92bird |

If you're a veteran you will appreciate the displays in this museum. Beside WWII aircraft there are numerous military exhibits.

Very interesting museum, even if planes aren’t necessarily your thing.

By Joanne S |

My husband and I visited the Commemorative Air Force Museum on a whim. We got there about an hour after it opened. I didn’t think it’d take too long to go through it; I was WRONG. They practically had to kick us out it was that interesting! There’s planes, or course, but there’s a lot of interesting history to read and memorabilia to see. I especially enjoyed the information on the Vietnam War, the WACS, and walking around and in the some of the planes on the tarmac. They also have a couple of videos to watch and a movie on the B17 Flying Fortress. There were mechanics (on loan from SW Airlines) were working on a number of the planes in the hanger area getting them ready for a show. there are docents, both in the museum and the hanger that are very knowledgeable and friendly. The museum has a number of planes, which you can book rides in, including the B17. Be cautioned, however, that the rides book well in advance.

I will definitely visit the Commemorative Air Force Museum again.

Very interesting!

By Rick S |

Really like their gift shop! Easy to get to and easy parking. Been there about 4 times over the years. Always learn something.

Great little gem for a museum!

By Deborah D |

Hubby and I are both retired Air Force and decided to take our kids/grandchildren here. What a really great place! The displays are great as well as the staff. The souvenir shop is very reasonably priced, so it's easy to find something for everyone here. If you're in the area, make this one of your stops!

Good Museum and Great Car Show

By David P |

We went for the Wings and Wheels show. The car show had well over 100 cars including many great restorations and some cool customs. The museum has two hangars. One displays dozens of visually restored military aircraft, from props to jets to helicopters. Many allow visitors to peek into, or even crawl into, for a great look. The second hangar is a working restoration facility, which is cool, too. While this is way smaller than the extra-fantastic Pima museum, it is worth a visit if near the area.

B-17E - Working!

By Dan I |

It is a two hanger bay (2 room) area. There are a large collection of planes and plane models.

It has relatively small amount of planes compared to other airplane museums , but the planes it does have are unique and well-preserved/reproduced. You can also take rides in these planes compared to larger airforce museums.

So well done

By Ptaylor430 |

This museum is fascinating! Aviation buffs will truly enjoy the displays and appreciate the restorations. If your not an aviation buff, the history is worthwhile. Very glad we went.

Old airplanes

By Ernie W |

I really liked this place . If you are interested in old and newer airplanes like I am this is the place for you . You are able to go in the hanger and inside a Lancaster bomber and get up close and personal. If you give you email to them they will sent newsletters every once in a while. The hanger has smells in it that just want to make you volunteer. A good place to go . Admission is reasonable.

A must in Phoenix area

By MontrealMermaid |

My boyfriend wanted to see the planes in Tucson and saw in an Arizona magazine an advertisement for this museum. As it was closer to where we are, we decided to go and were not disappointed! On the contrary, as it is smaller than Pima, you feel less rush and can enjoy the moment you spend there. All the information are very interesting and the volunteers on site are great and generous with there infos and stories. We did not know we could take a ride on some of the planes. We will definitely come back for that!

Museum of Uniquness

By GaryAlberta |

What a great museum of not only rare static aircraft but also a working museum where visitors can get up close and personal with all aircraft and watch as maintenance crews carried out inspections and repairs. Very friendly and accommodating staff.

Historical air artifacts through several wars

By Michael R |

Great collection carefully curated and interpreted by knowledgeable docents. Walk around close up and even into several exhibited aircraft. Impressive to a range of ages. Worth a couple of hours at least and more if you read the placards, and watch the many videos.

Journey back in time

By Suzanne B |

This was our second visit to the museum. The planes and other items are very impressive and offer a glimpse into the past. We also attended their annual fundraiser, the Big Band Dance. The music is great, the dancing and the 40s styles that many people wore. Several veterans were there too!

A must for aircraft buffs and World War II historians

By Jeff P |

We found the experience very interesting and informative. They offer rides on the vintage aircraft. Was able to climb on board the B-17. This added a lot of perspective to the war movies I have seen in my life.

Location of one of the last flying B-17's

By NEofAZ |

not a lot to look at for they have just a few aircraft at this out of the way location BUT they do have one of the last flying B-17s and when she is home you may walk through her and that makes this place a must see stop for veterans of WWII and aircraft enthusiast

Volunteers at their best!

By TFitz134 |

Staffed by all volunteers, this museum has displays of many types of aircraft, as well as a hanger of old aircraft that still fly. You can arrange a ride in one of the vintage planes if you desire. A worthwhile stop.

Everyone had a good time

By Ontheroadagain |

Pretty fun museum. Took our 2 young boys and they really enjoyed seeing all the different types of planes and jets. There is one that they let you go inside. The people working there were very nice and informative. It took us about 2 hours to see everything. Not sure it’s something we would go to again but was definitely worth seeing at least once.

Air Museum attration extraordinaire

By johnmorton2018 |

What a terrific experience. The tour guide is so knowledgeable of the history of the aircraft and the museum it self. Mr. Greg Ferguson was terrific. I learned so much very informative and interesting. The aircraft arfe amazing and many still fly.--WOW Recommend everyone that comes to AZ put this on their list to visit

day at Commemorative Air Force Museum

By Catherine B |

What a great place to visit, the history of the items they have on display is wonderful. If you where in the Service great place to show you family what you had experience. The Volunteers where more than happy to personnally take you around and explain.

Awesome aviation museum

By Andy |

Great museum for any aviation enthusiast, brilliantly supported by an excellent team of volunteers. We enjoyed a fascinating and informative tour from a great docent, Bill. Really great place to visit.

Get a good look at the old war birds

By rclintpeters |

I have visited the air force museum twice and have greatly enjoyed myself both times. It's well worth the trip. Even the youngsters have a great time.

Business trip

By Esteban |

Very nice place. I went there out of curiosity during a business trip and loved them. If you go you won't regret it

Cool Airplane Musem

By montreader |

This is a small museum with some great planes. Home of the touring B-17 called Sentimental Journey. Docents, volunteers, and staff were all extremely helpful and friendly.

What a way to spend an afternoon ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

By John B |

This is a fascinating place to visit and I can assure you it will take a couple of visits to see and soak in everything. Very well done, very friendly and knowledgeable docents and sometimes you may just be fortunate enough to visit with someone who actually flew one of the airplanes that's exhibited there. Lot's of history to soak up. If you have even the slightest interest in understanding what "The Greatest Generation" contributed to our democracy and country, this place must be your first stop.

It would be a real experience unmatched to know this place with my friends and get rich from so much art

By Alba D |

It is definitely a unique and unrivalled experience to know all the types of planes that are in this place, certainly one day it would not be enough to know everything it contains, so much history that it preserves

Amazing Museum!

By Brenda S |

The Commemorative Air Force Museum has an amazing collection of historic plans and helicopters. Everyone there has a passion for these air craft and it shows in how well they preserve each plan, the level of detail of the displays, and the fun events they plan. Can't wait to book a flight on one! A wonderful place to visit!!

Plane fun

By Discover703050 |

This is a small facility but has a number of interesting aircraft you can see and in some cases actually board. The DC3 that was there the day we visited was an outstanding example. It was the first I've seen with a passenger configuration.

see history

By dee g |

This was a very informative visit. We went at open house so there was a lot of activities making for a lot more activity and keeping everyone's interes.

Good place if you are an aviation enthusiast!

By Bangpaulxu |

Came here for a business trip and had time to kill so we went to see the Air Force Museum. Very nice place with real aircrafts. Overall good place if you love or are into aviation!

Lots of Hands On History

By medlund1977 |

My brother and I biked up to this museum. Was surprised there were no bike racks available. Docents were very helpful and the walkthrough exhibits were interesting. Who knew pilots and crew had to be so small to fit into their planes? Would like to have someone correct the many typos on the printed material. Would like updated information on the Gulf of Tonkin "incident" to illustrate it was probably fabricated data by Johnson's intelligence team to allow for escalation of the Vietnam war.

Very Informative

By marshell2016 |

Spent about three hours walking around two huge hangers. The docents we talked with were wonderful, full of facts intermixed with entertaining tidbits. The displays well done. Great for all ages. We even got to see the Commemorative flight of our WWII vets on the DC-47!

Another Great Air Museum

By avshockey |

Why does Arizona seem to have such great air museums? While this is a small museum, they have great planes on display. You were allowed to walk inside one of the ones outside. They have 2 more with ladders so you can climb up and see in the cockpit. You were also allowed to walk around the hangar where they restore the planes. All the people there are volunteers and seem to be retired Air Force. They are extremely friendly and eager to share their knowledge.Go on Wednesdays in the summer as it is Buy 1 Get 1 Free! A great value. The gift shop had a few good buys in it as well.

I am too big for a B 17!

By Coloradodave53 |

We were unable to get into the Pima Air Museum in Tucson due to limited times. Pima would be a must see for the airplane buff. We happened across the above attraction and since I like airplanes, well yahoo! They had some static displays, of an F4 Phantom, MIG21, and some propeller aircraft. The highlight though, was to crawl (literally) through a still flyable B17 F bomber. My wife is 5'7" and I am over 6' so it was a challenge in some areas, especially for me. Having done this, you really have to admire and appreciate the air crews that climbed in and went to war again and again in these planes . We must not forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice to save humanity. God bless.

Great for Aircraft Buffs

By Rick P |

Visited this place as part of Falcon Field Open House event. They have vintage aircraft inside and outside, with other historical artifacts on display. It's the size of a Target store, or so. You will get up close and personal with some neat equipment.

Commemorative Air Force Museum - A Must Visit

By Ritch G |

We visited the CAF Museum is an outstanding aviation museum. The staff here are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. This is a must see for any aviation enthusiast or history buff.

You gotta see this!

By TedRecupero |

First time we've been able to visit. It won't be the last. We almost went for the B-25 ride. It wouldn't have been the worst thing we ever did with our money.
I think next time I'm in town I will do the ride.
The planes and the stories behind them. The guys that keep them in the air. Awesome.

Not your average museum!

By Planes13 |

This is more than a museum You not only learn a lot about World War II history but you get a hands on experience with a B17 and a C47. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and willing to spend as much time or as little with us as we wanted. There are several planes there from other times and aspects of aviation. This museum makes you proud!

Awesome history

By Connieleee |

This museum is very well organized with sit down places to watch little miniature video clips. There are plenty of planes to look at and even some that are being currently worked on out in the ground area.
Take the time to go see it it is well worth the trip

Wonderful Place

By Lily30301 |

This is a wonderful air museum with so many beautiful planes from a bygone era. There are so many interesting people to talk with and the volunteers that work here are fabulous. There are planes both inside and outside and there are a couple of planes that you can crawl up into so you get the feel of what it was like for the guys in these planes during WWII. I absolutely love this place.

Special birthday for my husband!!

By Penelope E |

I wanted to make my husbands birthday very special. I looked and looked and finally found the Commemorative Air Force Museum and not only was that great BUT they have plane rides in vintage WWII planes. I scheduled the plane that has the glass front gunnery. He got to ride up front (others rode in back) then got a change to crawl up to the gunnery as they were flying. He was like a 5 year old at Christmas...so worth the money...best birthday gift ever.

Trip back in time

By SantaFeDiva |

We love visiting airplane museums, and this one in Mesa, Arizona adjoining Falcon Field is a winner. Planes from WW1 and WW2 is the offering of the day with a lot of people to answer your questions about them.
Plus, there is a PX for all your aircraft needs.
Worth the visit.

Morning excitement

By Kenneth B |

This was an exceptionable visit because some people had booked a flight on the B-29. We were allowed to stand inside the hanger just yards from the plane as they did the preflight and then fired up the engines. We were so close the prop wind was blowing on us.

Talk to one of the Docents. fascinating!

By Ginia L |

very cool museum of all things air Force and Navy flight. I love asking one of the Docent's a question, most of them are retired military and have fascinating stories to tell. They are more interesting than the actual museum!

Opinion

By JoseAnna J |

I really liked it, a spectacular place where I would go again, I recommend it to everyone, a greeting and thank you for everything.

Great experience

By Maria Granic |

I took my 4-year-old son to the museum, and we both enjoyed it tremendously. The curators were very knowledgeable and very friendly, and my son had fun interacting with them. His favorite part was 'flying' the children's toy airplanes and seeing airplanes land nearby. For those who have war veterans in the family, it can be gripping. Overall, a great experience.

Amazing

By Sonja M |

This is a must see. So much history to be learned by people who experienced it firsthand. The planes were amazing to see. They have quite a collection. I would have loved to go up in one of the bigger planes. If you want to do it be prepared to spend some money. Plan on spending a few hours here.

"Great History of Vintage Air Planes"

By MrMeat9 |

If you're a history buff the Air Force Museum in Mesa is a great place to
checkout some vintage air planes. The B-17 bomber was great and you can get inside the air craft and get a feel for what it was like. Also plenty of other vintage military planes including an F-4 Phantom.

Repeated visits over a 20 year period

By Mary M |

We often take visitors there, and they always want to go back the next time they are in town. The staff is always helpful. We have watched the museum change as it has grown and developed over the years. It is definitely a "must see" for airplane afficiondos and students of WW2.

A unique air museum

By mickey448 |

The first time we visited this museum was over 10 years ago. It's a most amazing place. We were able to take advantage of the docent tour, a lecture and speak to a number of the volunteers. Every piece of aviation history (et al) has a story attached to it. There are lots of display cases and interesting history there as well. Short interesting videos too. You can even book a flight on a vintage aircraft.

Awesome Aviation Museum

By ReconSJ |

A very cool aviation museum consisting mostly of military aircraft from WWII thru Vietnam era. And as a bonus they offer rides (for a fee of course) in several WWII aircraft such as the awesome B-17 Bomber. During the summer, some of the WWII planes are often gone though as they are sent to airshows across the country.

A walk through aviation history in Mesa

By Chuck B |

I attended an event at the air museum, intending to stay briefly as a courtesy to the person that invited me. Four hours later, as closing time, I knew I had to return. The static displays are captivating!

Excellent Museum - More Than Expected

By Jeff C |

We went to this Museum not really knowing what to expect. Been to quite a few military/air museums and this one ranks right at the top. What sets this Museum apart is that it not only has static airplane displays it also has restored planes that are in flyable condition. When we were there they were flying the B-17 and the C-47 (DC3). We got to actually go inside these planes. The docent that was there was very informative and knowledgeable. Unbelievable the conditions those flyers had to deal with. The displays inside the museum besides the planes had many personal accounts from the vets. We found stories from 2 vets who were in the same prisoner of war camp as a member of our group! If ever a a museum needed a 2 day pass, this is it. I Highly recommend you visit this Museum!

amazing trip to the past that defined the world

By drguevara2018 |

This CAF Museum pleasantly surprises me with the rich history of men and women pilots during WWII, US and British. The photos, uniforms, engines, planes, weapons and bombs are rare together and even more so in how well maintained and presented.
In addition, The CAF Museum sponsors one of the most fun events in the region every March "A Night in the 1940s" is a big band dance in the hanger with a B27 at the door. Many folks are in uniform and many of in their WWII uniforms (yeah they still fit LOL). Thanks for your service to this great country, and to an amazing dash to a great time in music and celebration that the great war was over..

Commemorative Air Force Museum

By Melody P |

We live just 3 miles from this fascinating museum. The B17 is our favorite exhibit, and we love hiking the mountains around Phoenix and seeing her fly by. Yes, you can book flights on this plane, and a couple of others! Excellent experience for the veterans in your family. We also like the exhibits of WWII bomber jackets, and the Tuskeegee Airmen. This museum is worth a visit!

Good exhibits but small.

By J P |

The exhibits and aircraft on display are very good. However it is not a large museum as compared to the Air Force museum at Wright Paterson AFB but good for a small museum. Flights are offered in certain of their aircraft such as the B-17 and B-25.

Great hidden gem

By DWong |

I’ve lived in the valley for 5 years and never knew this existed. It is a great museum for military aircraft enthusiasts. The docents manning the museum know a lot about each aircraft and are very eager to share. I’d recommend taking the tour. We got into the B-17 and it was really an education experience. Each aircraft is well maintained and cared for. If you compare it to the Pima Air and Space Museum, it is smaller. But the aircrafts are in better shape in Mesa. I hesitated to take my elderly parents to Pima and Space because they have difficulty walking. This museum is much more manageable.

CAF Airbase Arizona

By Mark |

Great collection of WW2 aircraft, most of which fly and you can purchase flights in. Great displays of WW2 history.

Great museum experience

By Fishfry_41 |

The Air Force museum has a well maintained and interesting museum with operational planes. We enjoyed hearing and seeing the history of the planes and had the opportunity to walk through a B-17. Well worth stopping.

Awesome Museum!!

By Anne H |

We were visiting Arizona for a vacation and our friend and his wife who are very involved in the musem and own severalplanes there, took us to the musem to see it-it was wonderful and we got to go inside to see some of the planes- very interesting displays and met lots of nice people. Very informative too. Definitely worth seeing!

Great Place to Stop In & Visit with Vets & too see some of the Aircraft used in WWI, WWII, Vietnam War & others

By drewaspark |

Friend of mine asked if I'd be interested in stopping in at this Museum. I'd said sure why not, let's check it out.
Well, this place surprised me; we were met with one of workers immediately as we walk through door. He quickly gave a low down on what this place was & what it represented, plus he suggested "you should go an check out the D17 plane in the shop, cause the boys just about have it ready for a test flight, they're doing some final repairs & checks before it's 1st test flight after the rebuild of the D17".
I was amazed that we were allowed in the shop to snoop around & interact with Mechanics.
Learnt that a lot of volunteers are Veterans that work there. We spoke with several of them; telling story's their experience while in the Service plus story's of the planes themselves of what the planes function was in the War and plus the importance of each of the planes had as well in the War.
This is definitely a GEM, I wouldn't say it's Hidden, but definitely a GEM of a place!!!!

Amazing array of older aircraft

By Alan R |

Calling all engineers, technogeeks, and fanciers of warbirds. This museum is a wonderment of aircraft: all sizes, descriptions, and ages. They are too numerous to list here, but include a B-17 that is frequently available to walk through and sometimes available for rides (at a considerable extra cost). Their B-25 is also something to behold. Be sure to engage the docents in conversation; they can provide a wealth of detail and anecdotes about the planes.

Hidden Gem

By kayo61 |

We drove by Falcon Field frequently and noticed that they had a small air force commemorative museum on the west side of the airport, but never stopped. One weekend, they had an air show of the vintage planes where you could actually step inside the war planes and picture what it would have been like flying these birds during WWII. We were totally surprised at all the history crammed into this museum and spent a few hours there. We have since taken our grandchildren, and guests that visit Arizona and everyone had high reviews. Something for everyone and I promise, it will pleasantly surprise you.

Very well run museum by volunteers who LOVE what they are doing.

By Carissa E |

Neat little place. The workers are very passionate and exited to share stories. The day we visited they were using one of the hangers for a fundraiser so had move about everything to the other one. It was cramped but neat we could still see everything. I was very happy they chose to still allow visitors that day for a discounted price rather than closing for the day. We would have been very disappointed.

Fun times in a magical environment

By Konstantine D |

the planes brought back to other turbulent and glorious periods of history, these great machines were the marvels of their times

Mesa is a great place for family vacation relaxation, American history and some good food

GREAT MUSEUM OF OLD WAR PLANES

By Robert M |

Great museum of old war aircraft both indoors out outdoors. The restored B-17 was magnificent! as was the C-47 and B-25 and F-4 Phantom. Helpful and friendly volunteer guides explain all about the various aircraft.. Good exhibits also. Great place to visit for people of all ages especially Vets like myself. Enjoyed talking with Vets from Vietnam, Korea and WWII.My second visit and first was in 1997 and the aircraft are rotated as ones replace others etc over the years. Anyone that enjoys history would appreciate this museum very much.

62 years...finally got here...

By Johnfrisbee |

In 1945, my 21 year old father made the dangerous journey across the Atlantic on board the then troop ship Queen Mary. A long train ride across the USA, and he arrived with his fellow RAF trainee pilots at the fledgling Falcon Field, Mesa, Az.
He trained on P17-Stearmans and T-6 Harvards.
I grew up with his tales and photos of American generosity, hospitality, and the amazing Arizona scenery. Obviously it was my ambition to one day visit Falcon Field and see where my father flew all those years ago.
Finally Oct 2017, and we're in the States on a 15-day road trip, focussed on Falcon Field - with a flight booked in the Commemorative Air Force Museum's P-17 Stearman!
Billy - thank you so much for such an amazing flight: 35mins of excitement and poignant experience, flying over those same hills, valleys, rocks and landmarks that dad flew over 80 years ago!
For me, it was the highlight of our trip. And after the early morning flight...the museum...
We were surprised by the large number, variety and superb condition of the static museum's planes and other exhibits. So much to see, made so very interesting by the explanatory signage, photos, maps, etc.
The museum staff were friendly, helpful, enthusiastic & knowledgeable.
The shop is excellent too. Large car part out front. Coffee shop just across the road.
This is an amazing place to visit: obviously aviation enthusiasts will get much out of it, and should plan on being here for a few hours, but the others in our family group also enjoyed the spacious and interesting museum too.
Watching vintage planes take off and land is something else!
We felt privileged to visit the CAF Museum at Falcon Field, and would 100% recommend it on anyone's trip to the Phoenix area...book a flight in one of their fantastic WWII planes if you can. Both the museum and flights are great value, and help fund the upkeep of the museum and its collection of flying warbirds.
Sincere thanks to you all, especially Billy the pilot! "I'm gonna show you what your dad would have done here in 1945!" And he did!

Great slice of American History!

By Rod McLeod |

Beautifully displayed - and a well versed group of experienced veterans on hand to share their experiences.

Simply spectacular! Do not miss this!! (Plus a spooky tale)

By Julia W |

We came upon this museum by chance, but it turned into one of those experiences that you never forget. We were greeted at the door by Don who gave us a general overview of the museum so that we could find our bearings. He mentioned that there was a B17-G outside that we could climb in, but that went right over my head because it seemed so unlikely! We have honestly never seen such shiny airplanes, they must spend thousands of man hours polishing them! We had a good look around the first hangar and then we went outside to have a look at 'Sentimental Journey', the B17-G. Tom was busy polishing her, and got down from his ladder to have a chat. He also said that we could climb inside and have a look around, but he had to say that about 3 times before I believed him! in the UK we have one remaining flying B17 but no one is allowed to touch it so the idea that there was one we could climb around in freely just seemed about as likely to us as saying that Elvis was in the back and he was signing autographs! However, once the news had finally sunk in we climbed around inside which was simply an amazing experience. Don't be afraid to climb up, you have to kneel when you get up the ladder and crawl about a bit but it is enormous fun and you will never forget it.Unbelievably you can pay to be taken up for a flight in several vintage planes including Sentimental Journey. Even though it is expensive, it is not out of the ballpark of similar experiences, though you would have to book in advance as I'm sure they only fly on certain days. We looked around the second hangar where there is a B25 which also still flies. As we wandered around we bumped into Rick who is one of the many knowledgeable docents. He explained to us that the museum would not have been there without the British in World War II because they built an air base on Falcon Fields next door which is still an active airfield. Rick spoke to us in great detail about the history, which was really fascinating and showed us many of the planes and storyboards. As we were leaving he mentioned that the day before, Sunday 12th November, there had been a ceremony at Mesa Cemetery to commemorate the 23 British cadet pilots who had been killed at Falcon Fields in training accidents during World War II. The next morning we decided to visit the graves and leave a little red poppy there. (You might know that British people usually wear little red poppies to commemorate our veterans around this time of year). I had my poppy with me so I left it there. What was really spooky, and I will leave you to judge, is a message that popped up on my iPhone while we were there. My iPhone was switched off and in my purse at the time and I hadn't touched it for around an hour. I've attached the screenshot here so you can see and I will let you decide what you think it says, but I would point out that the young men who died in the 1940s would have known what the poppy was, because wearing them had been customary since the end of World War I in the UK. So if you are passing by Mesa don't miss out on visiting this museum because it is simply unforgettable.

Step Back in Time

By bclarke292 |

What an incredible display of history! Wonderfully restored vintage aircraft. Many placards and signs to provide history and context. There are several very helpful volunteers as well to share information and stories. Definitely worth the trip!

Great museum! Take the flights! Well worth it to fly in history!

By @trail781352 |

Such a cool place to see, feel, and fly in history! As soon as you walk into the hangar the planes are on display, a lot to see and learn, a cinema room, great staff, a nice gift shop, but by far the best thing to do is one of the flights! They range from around $80 to up to $800 on the various WWII era planes they fly. Well worth it! Where else can you fly in those planes! I'm glad I got to take advantage of it.

ALWAYS GREAT.

By llittle |

the personal tour by Mike. on December 10th after lunch we caught a slow time, and even though there was only 3 in our group, Mike offered a guided tour . it was one of the most informative and interesting tours i have ever taken[and i have taken a lot of tours in a lot of museums in my 77 years.] there is a great variety of beautifully restored planes and many other items. i have been here before and had been inside the B-17, but my friends went through, don't miss this, as you see the conditions our WWII pilots and crews fought in.

Nice displays, pricey admission

By Rikster922 |

This is a nice museum with some very well restored aircraft and interesting displays. Enough here to feed any aviation buff. Visit when one of the popular warbirds is in town, and be prepared to cringe at the cost of admission. Yay for free admission for disabled veterans. Boo for zero discounts for all other vetwrans.

Love the History!

By Kate R |

Had a great time touring the Planes. Our tour guide was very informative. All the volunteers were very friendly. If you love WW2 Army Air Corp. history, you will find this museum interesting.

B-17 Flight

Wide range of historical artifacts. Able to walk
among numerous aircraft inside large hanger and along flight line.

Spend Time in Taking the Cockpit Tour

By Jennifer B |

We were pleasantly surprised with our time spent at the Arizona Commemorative Air Force Museum in Mesa. We highly recommend paying the extra money and taking the cockpit tour. The Veteran who lead our cockpit tour was a volunteer who was incredibly knowledgable, kind and attentive. We never felt rushed during our time with him or while we were each taking our turn sitting in the various cockpits. You can tell the Arizona Commemorative Air Force Museum takes great pride in their respect, care and love for their irreplaceable warbirds. We highly recommend visiting.

Fly Me to the Moon

By tedsobotka |

great for any aircraft enthusiast. not only do you see all the planes but you can do rides in a WWII bomber. A perfect way to entertain young children for the afternoon and educate them.

Super time at the Museum.

By Tracy W |

The Museum volunteers were so informative. It was a special thing to meet the youngest son of Robert Moore who’s B17 was lost behind enemy lines. We had just looked at the exhibit about Robert Moore and read through it thoroughly and talked about it.

Next we walked to the 2nd hanger, and there was a B17 there - one of 7 left working in the world. We met his son Paul Moore volunteers there. Paul helped write that book. He was fun to talk to and learn more about what happened to his father. He was very proud of the work he and other volunteers do there.

We were happy to visit there and learn about all of the planes there.

Great Little Museum in Mesa AZ!

By Gene Y |

Great museum! You can even go inside some of the planes and can climb ladders to look into the cockpits! Very knowledgeable volunteers man the exhibit.

Getting in the B-17 is quite a thrill

By Jon M |

Got to get into the B-17 bomber and check it all out, hard to believe the nerve the guys in WW2 had. They also have a B-25 Mitchell on display. and a couple of dozen other old planes. We spent 3-4 hours there and it is very interesting.

Vacation with friends

By Roxanne A |

This was very interesting. So much information that you could visit again and learn more. The volunteers were very informative and willing to answer questions or just walk by and give additional information

Nice place to spend afternoon 👍🏼

World War II Warbirds

By James P |

If you love aviation and the old WWII warbirds this is a great visit. Went during a special event and they also had military vehicles and some vendors of military memorabilia. Very enjoyable. B-17 is a treat.

Great morning out, thanks to the staff!

By OldMate83 |

My mate and I took our kids there for a morning and had a great time. The museum is fantastic, and the staff are knowledgeable and friendly. We will be back!

Must see!

By debbs_50 |

This museum is close to my home. If I can't think of anything else to do, I pop in. Always a great afternoon. Volunteers have great knowledge plus, some of the people who visit-real life heros from WW2 and Korea--have great stories to share. You don't get this info from books or school or ANYWHERE!

Highly Recommend!

By Colleen1978 |

We enjoyed this museum and learned so much! The volunteer docents are very knowledgeable and experienced in the the history and use of the artifacts. We visited during the week which might explain why there weren't any children there. I would hope they are able top visit and learn this part of our history.

Weekend Air Show & Car Show

By bluekitchen12 |

We enjoyed our visit to the Air Museum. The displays were well marked and informative. If you had questions there were knowledgeable volunteers to answer any and all questions. It was fun to watch the the WWII planes take off and land as they give rides over the desert (for a fee). It is worth your time to check it out.

Very interesting small museum

By Colleen538 |

Although it's not very big, we did spend about 2 hours touring this museum. The planes and helicopters were fascinating and they include a good bit of information about the history as well. Our favorite was the B-17.

Awesome (even if you planes aren’t your thing)

By omgj808 |

So, I’m no history buff or interested in planes. I didn’t know what to expect, but I was mesmerized with the stories that our docent/tour guide told us about the war, people, and events as he led us from plane to plane. He was awesome! The love and passion that these volunteers have for this museum and sharing their stories really makes this place special. Those who give tours, refurbish planes, give flight trips on some of these planes are to be commended. It was really amazing to get up close and actually walk through some of the planes.
I would go again!

Great Collection

By Michel |

Great collection and very friendly staff. I was given an overview of the aircraft by one of the docents upon entering which was very helpful! Could definitely spend a couple hours here. So much unique information, with each piece having a special and intriguing history. Thank you!

Meet the Commemorative Air Force

By Taylor B |

Founded in 1961, the Commemorative Air Force is a non-profit organization whose mission is to restore and preserve World War II-era combat aircraft. Some of the finest aircraft in the history of military aviation are on display at the Commemorative Air Force Museum in Mesa, Arizona. Located at Falcon Field at 2017 North Greenfield Road, it was established in 1978 and is the home of one of the largest Commemorative Air Force units in the world. On exhibit are World War II artifacts, helicopters and classic American and foreign combat planes, many of which are the last of their kind. The front of the museum, which is situated inside an old World War II hangar built in 1941, are one of four propellers which once installed on a B-29 Super Fortress and a three-inch Mark 33 deck gun originally mounted on the USS Guam. Don't miss the Walk of Honor, which recognizes the contributions made by Arizonans to the field of military aviation. On display are a Douglas C-47 Skytrain, a Douglas SBD Dauntless, a McDonnell Douglas F-4N Phantom, a Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21, a North American B-25 Mitchell, a Grumman TBF Avenger, a North American P-51 Mustang, a Sikorsky H-19 Chickasaw and a Nieuport 28 C.1, a replica of the French biplane fighter flown by American ace Eddie Rickenbacker during World War I. Also a replica of the Lockheed Vega that Amelia Earhart flew on her final flight. No, there is no Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird in the collection. But it very enjoyable, just the same.

Air Plane Museum

By Jane P |

Very nice small museum with lots of historical planes and good descriptions about themes. Don't know that it is too kid friendly but great for those WWII byffs

Wonderful planes from several eras

By Janice S |

Totally run by veteran volunteers, the tour was great. I saw inside the maintenance area and outside are examples of several older planes.

Quality versus quantity

By Dave C |

This is a very small museum, but the quality of their displays is excellent. I highly recommend visiting, but if Pima Air and Space Museum is a 5, this can't be higher than a 3.

An Aircraft Enthusiast's Historic Paradise

By thewanderer300 |

We arrived a tad late but we were not disappointed. What a museum. Had a look inside a B-17 Flying Fortress and Douglas DC-3 and saw many other aircraft and exhibits and even the workshop and maintenance hanger. A lovely giftshop. A terrific museum.

Great place to visit

By Greg P |

Went here on open cockpit Friday. Paid an extra $5 to get personalized tours. It was great. Up close and personal views of the aircraft. The personal experiences of the volunteers is phenomenal. If you have any interest in aircraft you can get up close and personal

Fun educational journey

By Greg P |

Great visit. Staff is very helpful. You get up lose and personal with the aircraft. Great assortment of aircraft and great environment

Great museum to visit!

By Bonnie M |

Great place to go for a couple of hours! Nice displays of planes from all wars. Good information on all displays. The Veteran’s that are there were great! Shared experiences with us from their time and other friends time in the service. And also information about the displays. We would definitely recommend a visit there!

Wonderful place for family visits or history buffs....

By PAADAB |

My dad trained at Falcon Field with the RAF. It is a great museum and fun to see the planes. There is a ton of history if you wish to seek it out!

I Just Flew on their B 17-- Ride of Lifetime

By LAFFSTOP |

1st let me say that from the flight crew to the pilots...stand up -friendly - professional people --who are there for the love of the history.

The flight before us had a 90 year veteran who had flown in the war (WW2) in this very same plane-- the man was frail but lucid and the entire staff gave him and his service the acknowledgment of a lifetime. as they carefully assisted him in entering and exiting the aircraft..it was truly their honor (and very moving to watch them make a "fuss" and how this man "perked up") by assisting a war hero from a different generation.

That's the quality of people who maintain this airfleet

If you love planes and things, This is the Place!

By I6769PFcarolc |

I keep going back, things change and I am always amazed at how much I learn each time I go back.
Sometimes they are even having a buffet.....food is always good...……...mixed in with pilots telling of olden day stories!

Commemorative air force at falcon field

Love the old war birds. They have both a b-25 Mitchell and a b-17 g flying fortress in working condition. They fly! Awesome..

Very good visit

Very good planes, well-preserved planes, very relaxing, been very good with friends and very clean the museum

Air Museum in Mesa, AZ

By Texas_Homesick |

The museum is not as big as some I’ve toured in my trips around the world but it was definitely the friendliest. Everybody asked if the could help. The people working on the aircraft would stop and answer all your questions. It was just a really enjoyable day for my 2 brothers and myself. I would encourage everyone who enjoys flight museums to visit.

Great museum

By dogapproved |

Visited yesterday anticipating we would spend an hour there. We were there for almost two and a half hours. Unlike other museum of this type their docents have actually flown in these planes. Other veterans were available to share their experiences. I would definitely recommend it.

Very informative museum

By Omni F |

There are numerous displays and aircraft for visitors to enjoy, and if you go outside the museum, there are additional planes; some of them you are actually allowed to go inside and view them. Throughout the site there are numerous volunteers willing to answer any questions you might possibly have. Just are we were getting ready to leave, we noticed a small display and there happened to by a volunteer standing by the display case. Rex (I believe that was his name), told us the story of the display and it was fascinating! Without this volunteer, I would have never known the story of "The Forgotten 500"

A plane enthusiasts dream

By RandyV545 |

My brother-in-law just loved this museum. He had to practically be dragged out and agreed only because he will be back in Mesa again for further visits.
The display planes are all kept in immaculate shape by a great volunteer staff, who are extremely knowledgeable.
Because he was wearing his "Dam Busters" T-Shirt, my brother proved very popular with the staff who were aware of the war significance of the "Dam Buster" project.

If you are lucky you will tour the B-17

By William O |

The Commemorative Air Force Museum is worth the time to tour even if the B-17 is not there. The staff if very informative and the displays are great. Don't miss this when in Mesa AZ.

Outstanding Museum

By KathyAndDennis E |

This was my second visit to the museum. I took a friend along this time; also a Canadian veteran. We were given the Royal Treatment by one of the experienced volunteers at the museum. He was very helpful and knew everything about everything!

Great day trip

By bill f |

Lots of planes for the aircraft enthusiasts out there. This is one of those laid back aircraft museums where its more about enjoying the planes than rushing through in a hurry. Great day out with kids or grand parents.

Magnificent

By Colin B |

Only found out about this museum from the porter in our hotel. Full of original and reproduction aircraft, we were shown around for an hour by a most knowledgable guide.
There are many stories recounted on the walls and I had no idea that RAF trainees were taught there in the second world war. Wonderful way to spend a few hours.

Great place to take older veterans

By gsvehla |

its amazing how small the planes were a great place to walk around and look at what your relatives used to fly in during the war

What a very interesting big of history.

By Dave H |

Many of these planes are still flying. while we were there, we enjoyed watching them start up the Sentamental Journey B17 and then take off into the sunset. A museum operated by all volunteers - and there are hundreds. You must grab one and have them show you around. They tell great stories of the history of these planes.

Great displays and volunteers who knew their stuff!

By reilly86 |

We enjoyed hours here and appreciated the volunteers who were at the ready to talk about the planes, the history, the technology - everything!

Pretty awesome

By Ken V |

A great assortment of military aircraft, spanning much of the era of human flight. Includes some fascinating details on the planes and their manufacturers. Also includes interesting information on engines.

grandson visit

By Barb V |

Took our grandson who is 11 to see the planes. He interested in all the planes and counted all the images on the planes where the pilots showed how many shot down in combat. It took about an hour and half to go through and read about the history. He was interested because he had this in class last year. We also noticed in looking inside the plane how the men were strapped in tiny seats during their mission. Also if you have a question there where employees with almost all the answers.

Air Museum, Mesa, Arizona

By Margie K |

We visited the Air museum a couple of weeks ago and were very lucky to have one of the fellows take us around and explain each aircraft and what it was used for mainly. The World War Two planes were especially interesting
and the guide himself was very interesting. I recommend anon interested in planes to visit this museum.

Fun and educational museum !

By MI_traveler_fun |

We were looking for something different to do in the Phoenix area and decided to visit this museum (very close by in Mesa)

We're aviation buff's and enjoyed the museum. It's very professional and staffed by very knowledgeable and dedicated volunteers. They have a nice main hanger with exhibits and a maintenance / restoration hanger to visit along with planes parked outside the museum. Thank you to Mac and the staff for the very educational and fun tour ! We also loved the B-17 and being able to go through it. Got some great photos in the sunny Arizona weather. Great job and will visit again !

Very Interesting Museum

By Tim J |

This is not a large museum. Much smaller then Pima Air & Space, or the Air Force Museum in Dayton. It does have some nice examples of vintage aircraft. The B-17 was there during our visit, and we got to go thru that. We also had a guided tour with a small group...got to go outside, in the maintenance hanger, and a walk thru of the display hanger.

I really liked the name when it was the Confederate Air Force.

By jim4900R |

We went on a week day morning and got a private tour by a docent who thought new on the job had a knowledge of each plane that was amazing. Great stories about them and how well they operated during the war. I have seen their planes under the old name, at many airport events around the country, but all were her from the B-29 to a bi-wing from WWI. Rides were available, but we did not go. We were able to climb into the bay of the B-17 and if more agile one could go from stem to stern, but agility is not my forte any longer.
Interestingly, the even have a MIG that came from Hungary.

All staff were top notch; friendly and knowledgeable. We were there for over two hours and never a dull moment.

History lesson

By robertd031143 |

Great place to take children and grandchildren for a history lesson. Liked the orginal name Confederate Air Force. It is evident the PC crowd had influence for the name change. Lost the history of the museum.

Outstanding!

By Tanner L |

What a tremendous experience! The displays are incredibly well done. The museum has done a great job of obtaining aircraft with historical significance. The best part of the visit were the volunteers who were friendly and knowledgeable and quick to share with you their knowledge and experiences. Thank you to all those involved. A highly recommended must see!

Don’t miss this!

By Stephanie L |

We spent two hours here on a Tuesday morning before heading to a baseball game. This was the perfect activity to fill the morning and we loved every minute of it. Our docent was excellent - he provided great background information on the planes as we walked around the museum. A highlight was getting to go inside two of the planes outside. I wish we had more time in the area - it would be fascinating to book one of the tours where they take you up in one of the planes that they still fly. However, two hours was the perfect amount of time in the museum to see all of the planes and exhibits. We spent about an hour with the docent and an hour on our own exploring the displays.

Worth the visit for WWII Aircraft

By JMHAR |

My son and I spent 3 hours looking at many wonderful exhibits. There is lots to see here. If you are interested in WWII Aircraft this is the place to be. You can pay (a lot) of money to fly in there planes. The B17 and B25 are worth the visit. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. Many thanks to Buck, Jim and Paul for taking the time with my son and I. Thank you Buck for your service to both our countries.

Outstanding museum of military aviation history

By AJ1234IN |

Many static exhibits indoors with real aircraft you can get close to. The hanger always has other aircraft being worked on to see as well. And usu a few outdoors near the flight line as well. Always knowledgeable staff to answer questions. Nothing like seeing these old craft close-up to realize just how daring these young aviators were just to fly them long distances, forget being constantly shot at. The greatest generation for sure!!!
Rides in some of the old planes can be scheduled (extra $$$) but usu fill up fast. Be aware that air in the Phoenix Valley can be rough, so prob take something beforehand if you tend to get motion problems.

B25 Maid in the Shade ride

By Richard D |

What a fabulous experience for any WWII “fans” or those with any personal connections to the aircraft that were so critical to the Allied cause. To actually be inside and experience the tight spaces, then to sense in a 30 minute flight, the noise, the vibrations, and the courage of those who flew in these craft. I highly recommend getting a “front jump seat” reservation which allows you to be directly behind the pilots for about 16 minutes and 8 minutes in the nose of the B25 -in the bombardier and front gunner seat. Everyone was extremely helpful and seemed to greatly enjoy being a part of this important history of the “Greatest Generation”

An attraction that will definitely satisfy

By EddieD |

I've been to this museum many times, both as a visitor and a member of the entertainment on their annual celebration event and have never been disappointed. For the "technocrats", there's a wealth of displays on aircraft, where they were flown and what makes them work. Historical information is everywhere for those who enjoy the history of aviation. There are many good restaurants in the area for both lunch and dinner if you want to make a day of it and if you are in town when they have the annual WWII dinner and dance, that is a fun evening. There's always something worth visiting for and a call will get you to a helpful person for current information.

Very nice and educational

By Andra O |

Lots of memorabilia, videos and flying things of many sizes to walk around. People to ask questions of were plentiful. Admission is a bit pricey but it a good cause. They are still reconstructing other planes. We spent a couple of hours there.

One of the best museum experiences I've had!

By mavarick2018 |

This is just one of them great finds that you stumble across when visiting an area you're not familiar with. I've been to a lot of places with great displays but this place really personalizes the entire visit for you. They may not have the largest collection but believe me when I say they let you get up close and personal to each and every plane. The volunteers that give the tours here are extremely knowledgeable about everything and are happy to discuss it all with you. The repair hanger where they restore the planes also lets you get up close to the guys that work on them and inside the planes as well. Nothing here is off limits like some museums that have most everything roped off. If you are a history buff or just like looking at planes and helicopters you absolutely have to stop in here. The admission prices are great and it's an experience you won't soon forget.

It's a wonderful thing and I found it good impression it's worth everything and the atmosphere the very good treatment

By Gregori T |

Very good the restaurant and all its things seemed fine if it is worth going again I could always return and share with family

Great experience

By Sharon Q |

So many planes to experience. The staff were amazingly knowledgeable. If you want to learn about older planes this is the best place.

Things are beautiful

By Jary J |

See aircraft up close and learn their history

By Beth A |

Amazing stories that bring history to life when you see the actual aircraft from battles. Special programs offered and flights on warbirds.

not welcoming.

By southwesttravele2016 |

aircraft is of course, outstanding. The Volunteers that I came in contact with; who work there were very disappointing.
As a member for many years of Yankee Airforce, there was a common friendship and courtesy; especially with non members who were interested in the air force.
Unfortunately, it costs $200. to join and volunteer with Commemorative Air Force and only $50. a person to join and volunteer at Yankee in Michigan.

When I retired , I was very excited to have the time to volunteer so when we moved here 4 years ago full time, it was quite a let down to not be able to reach anyone by phone or the abruptness of the volunteers that I encountered.

I sure miss the Champlaign fighter squadron musem and their people.

Outstanding Experience

By pdjohnson0523 |

Such an amazing experience. They had a B17 bomber that you could walk through. They had so many amazing staff members who spent time with you explaining the different planes and what they do. We had the privilege of meeting a WWII veteran and many veteran mechanics that volunteer their time to keep the planes in pristine condition.

cool place

By michelegut |

we have been going here for years. The kids love it and we like to see visiting planes. az has many good air museums. this is smaller than the Pima air in tucson but alot of fun to visit

A real pleasant surprise

By Kevin K |

You get a personalized one on one tour guide, a veteran with great knowledge. Getting inside some of the aircraft makes you appreciate how difficult it must have been during the war. With low expectations, I found this to be a great place to visit, thoroughly entertaining and educational.

Fun outing for hard-to-please grandsons

By ERWP |

We took our 10 and 12 yr old grandsons to this and it was a hit!! A nice blend of 'cool', unique, visionary and heritage planes. They loved the 'up close and personal' climbing in the planes and hearing 'neat' stories from those who 'were there'....also the older one went up in a small plane w/the pilot!! Very special! The younger one wanted to go but there is an age restriction. Make sure you go to the WWII 'tent' where there are vintage radios, cots, etc. just like it was in WWII. Eye-opening for the boys to see what the pilots didn't have then!! Give yourself time. There's lots to explore!

Wonderful!!!

By staceyweldon77 |

We are on vacation with a wide range of ages and my Dad really wanted to check out the museum. I was a little nervous bringing two toddlers but they did fantastic. We were greeted with a warm welcome and Craig stayed with us for almost the whole two hours we were there telling us stories about the planes and the history of Falcon Field. If you have any interest in military memorabilia or teaching the next generation about what it means to sacrifice and work hard then a stop here is a must.

Passionate, smart staff but essential stuff to see!

By MBA-OGTA |

Quickly...

This is it...for anyone. You don't need to be an airplane or history nerd to see what the CAF is trying to accomplish here. It's great to be able to see the many vintage airplanes...but the artifact exhibits are blow-mind. Those leather jackets with the bomb tallies on the back? Legit... completely!

Plus, talking to the staff, everyone 'gets' what they're doing and believes in the cause. A big thank you to Carol, Kim, Jim and Bo for taking time to answer questions and doing so with great cheer. :)

Rare history at this Museaum

By Capt D |

This museum has a knowledgeable staff and some very rare items. One of the only flying B-17's is based here. Sometimes it is away flying somewhere else, but if you get a chance, go see it. Very nice tour.

Bucket List Stop

By Ldawg3 |

The CAF museum is a great spot to go back in time with some classic airplanes. The history portion of the museum gives so much background to the planes and where and how the plane was used. Young and old will appreciate this museum and the staff and volunteers are always willing to fill in the gaps with helpful information.

history

By Paul G |

want a good look at history the different type of aircraft are restored very well and fly. They hold a 40's Dance and sock hop annually . Very interesting.

History everywhere!

By WenatcheeWayne |

I was surprised at the availability of the docents there. They would walk up when you entered the hangar and offer to show you around, if you wanted. Not pushy or braggers; just wanting go share with you the aviation history there. The continuous videos were great to sit and watch, and rest a bit. The docents were up to talking about your service stories & would share theirs, if asked. I was even asked what one service port on the nose of a Navy F-4 Phantom was for, I shared some info I knew about it, and the docent said they'd been trying to figure it out. We were allowed to crawl/walk thru their resident B-25 bomber (great pictures of the interior). Note: If you are a bit "portly" or have a lack of mobility, you will have trouble getting inside and around the interior. Various in-work projects were scattered around the hangar with many museum workers working on them. They would take time to tell you what they were doing and a bit of history about the project plane. Show a AAA card for a discount. Great gift shop in the lobby. Very clean restrooms! I will be back whenever I can. If you're in town for Spring Training, drive out there. You won't be disappointed!

Nice People Great Airplanes

By Bob S |

As "Winter Visitors" we've been coming to Mesa for more than 10 years and have never visited the Commerative Air Force Museum until this year.

The museum is smaller than I expected, maybe 20 airplanes but my understanding is all of them fly except those obviously being rebuilt. The best part of the museum however were the guides. All were retired from some aviation related field and all very knowledgeable. It was interesting to hear the background of the airplane you were looking at.

The B-17 was the highlight of out tour. It had just got back from a flight and the engines were still warm and dripping oil. What a amazing piece of WWII technology.

Your self guided tour starts and ends in a nice gift shop, lots of stuff but kind of spendy. All in all a great place to spend the afternoon.

Glad my son recommended this place

By C141Nav |

We visited this museum in Jan 2019. As a retired USAF officer, I know a little about the Air Force. Since my wife is a former director of an Air Force museum, I know a lot more about Air Force museums. This is an excellent one. The ability to walk around the airplanes while they are in the maintenance hangar is a plus. This museum is located just a short drive from our relatives house, but they had never been there. So glad my son recommended this place.

A New Appreciation for the Army Air Corp in WWII

By frbranson |

You can walk in the hangar where they are restoring old planes. You can walk through a B-17 and find out cool facts that give you a new outlook on what the men and women whole flew for our military had to endure. This is a great place to visit. They have many, many planes on exhibit, inside and outside. You can even reseve a day and time to take a flight in many of the planes, even the B-17. I was born and raised in the Air Force and never knew many of the things from this era. The docents are experts in aviation. Ours was a retired 747 commercial pilot with military training. You have to put this attraction on your visit.

Lots of planes and things to see

By redwing1ontario |

We went here in March of this year and took my father in law. Had a great time and he loved seeing all the planes. Very interesting and lots to see and do. He was very impressed with it.

Beautiful Restorations

By GaijinGeisha |

This was the first we had heard of this museum and decided to investigate it. It's a great collection of planes from primarily WWII, and includes information & photos not just about American planes during this war, but it dedicates a fair share of information about the WASP & women's contribution to the war effort both in building and flying planes during that time in our history.
The exhibits are well done & very informative, and not only do they have planes that have been restored, but there are a number of excellent scale models of planes as well.
In addition to the planes inside the museum, there are several out on the tarmac that you can board, or at least sneak a peek inside. You can have the opportunity to fly in the B-17 called "Sentimental Journey" if you are so inclined, and can pony up the fee they charge for the honor of doing so.

Don't miss this place. Many flyable WWII aircraft on display along with many other non-flyable aircraft.

Great gift shop!

Very Enjoyable Air Force Museum

By altonjk |

Lots of information and the volunteers are very helpful. Lots of planes to look at a a lot of information on everything inside. Been to a lot of Air Force Museum before and this one if very well done. Husband more into it then I am but was still interesting for me. While we were there they were doing their yearly maintenance on a lot of planes and you got right next to them doing them. Must mention they have a lot of Navy Planes more then anything. You even get to go through a boomer plane, don't remember the name but husband went through I didn't. thank goodness, he did say it was tough. Very good visit, would recommend it.

Great day exploring aircraft

By thomaswD4918IT |

I have been taking my Son here since he was born. He has always enjoyed going through all the airplanes and learning new things about them each time we go. A great place to watch imagination come to life in the kid in all of us.

Commemorative Air Force Museum

By carolu |

We took our son and 20-year old grandson who were visiting from out of town to the museum. We were all fascinated with the memorabilia that they have on display, as well
as many airplanes. We were even allowed to climb into and sit in some planes, such as a B-24 and a Transport Plane. One of the veterans explained a lot about the engines of
the different planes. All the volunteers are very helpful and friendly. It was a choice experience.

World War II airplanes all rebuilt by the guys who worked on them

By kpsellshomes |

Amazing place to visit if you want history about WWII and other planes. The tour guides are retired Air Force people who worked on or flew the planes. They can tell you everything about the planes. You can even fly in them. Plan a minimum of three hours. Small fee to get in.

Enjoyed the planes and it was fun to watch the grandkids discover things

By brucel641 |

Great place to review history, mostly of war planes.
some are hands on and some are look only.
Good historical things to read.

Great Time

By Hungry Man |

Staying in the area, so wanted to see the museum. Not disappointed. Very nice display of planes, mostly WW2 vintage. Good exhibits which were educational and fun. Very pleasant staff. Look forward to returning some day. Able to walk through a B17 and a C47. Had a great time!

Comemorative Airforce Museum

Went with friends to the Airforce museum during their annual open house. Got sunburnt, took lots of photos & video and had a blast! Can't wait to visit again next year. Highly recommended!

History come to life.

By Mary S |

It is wonderful to see the museum and be able to know that you have seen some of these wonderful History Planes flying. Thanks for all the work put into them. Great historians and Veterans there to tell you stories about the planes. Actually going inside some of the beauties to feel what it is like. Wonderful place.

Great job with a special museum

By grandeb |

Our visit was on a very hot spring day when we wanted to spend some time out of the sun. Everyone from the kind lady at the entrance to the docents were happy to share their knowledge and answer questions. To me there is a feeling of hallowed ground about the planes and exhibits. There are several "stations" with small TVs running video on different aspects of the planes and the men (and women) who flew them. As my partner asked as we were leaving one of the hangars - "I wonder who will be around much longer to restore and take care of these planes"

another hidden gem

By princess8675309 |

If you love old planes, mostly from WWII, you must visit this place. The gentlemen that volunteer/ work here are gold mines of information. The planes are gorgeous and restored. We got to go through a B-25 Mitchell. There are others outside that you can go through as well. So much history and lots and lots of memorabilia crowd the hangar as well. Yet another hidden gem in Mesa.

Family Visit to the Museum

By Mom Mitchell |

This was a good stop for our family while visiting AZ. The facility was extremely clean and everyone there was super nice and informative. We are not history or plane buffs, but still enjoyed the experience. The ability to get inside two of the planes was a major bonus.

If you like aircraft history, you gotta go!

By CZY4JAO |

CAF is an operating museum with an excellent selection of vintage planes from WW 1 through Vietnam. Some are static displays but many are available for rides on weekends. The B-17 and Texan are especially impressive. If docent Bob is available, you are in for a rare treat as he is both very personable and knowledgeable. The museum is "doable" in about 2 hours or you could easily spend half a day. It's very well done and much worth the visit!

Best little air museum in the west

By Ossenfogva |

I've been to a LOT of air museums. This one ranks as one of the best because of friendly people, interesting aircraft and very informed docents. Climb into a B-17 and explore every position except the cockpit and bombardier. Feel what it must have felt like 30,000 feet over enemy territory...except for the freezing temperature. A C-47 is also available to tour and gives you the feeling that flying was, at one time, enjoyable. The information, ranging from photos and movies to expertly crafted models, is as good as it gets. Watch the restoration of aircraft and be told what your watching by a very informative staff.

Outstanding! Not to be missed.....

By Kevin W |

Everything you would hope/want to see and made even better still by the warm, friendly and informative team on site! Had a great chat at 'reception' about WW2 before being 'Wowed' inside! The exhibits; planes; photos and stories in itself were ace but the real 'stars' came in the form of firstly Tom, our guide. A former A10 and F15 pilot in the UK. He was fascinating without being patronising - super guy! The second star - icing on the cake - was getting 'up close & personal'with the Flying Fortress! Being able to 'clamber' inside was something of a 'dream come through'. Breathtaking!.... Huge thanks everyone - a real holiday highlight for sure! Cheers from 'Blighty'!

Walk down memory lane

By mlmaynard |

My husband loved showing me one of the planes upon which he used to work. Since the exhibits expanded many wars, we found many interesting specimens to peruse and inspect. An additional thrill for my husband was the B17 that landed. It was a highlight of his trip to Phoenix and a thrill to see him enjoy the museum so much.

This is a wonderful place to visit would go back anytime people love it.

By Brian s |

See history unfold right before your eyes. This is wonderful. Would like to take a ride in one of these nice planes.

Wonderful to much to see in one trip

By ray h |

Guide was vreat. He knew his stuff. So many things to see and read. Love all the planes and the story behind them all

A Good Day to Fly

By Chuckies1girl |

Enjoyed seeing a B17 and B25 take off. Lots of people with first hand knowledge around to answer questions. Brought our 12 and 13 year old grandchildren and they were very interested.

Awesome!

By Bink |

Tons of volunteers & veterans sharing stories and explaining the aircraft and their impacts during service.

Beautiful facility with surprising access to the insides of many of the planes and into the maintenance areas outside.

Great visit!

Wonderful Museum and People!!

By Kinda Invisible |

I wish I could figure out a way to give this attraction significantly more than five stars. Wow, what a place!!

First off, it's an incredibly affordable activity to do. The moment we walked in the front door we felt welcome and everyone we encountered was genuinely interested in making sure we had a good time.

For an additional $10 we signed up for a cockpit tour and actually got to sit in three different cockpits. Check the website or call to find out the exact times they give the tours. The access to the planes is unbelievable; be sure to check out the hangar where they're actively working on planes because we were actually able to walk through a B17. My guys were in heaven.

The docents are accomplished servicemen and have so much information to share about the aircraft on exhibit but also about their personal experiences with a number of them. Scattered throughout are interesting posters to read and videos to watch.

We didn't plan ahead well enough to be able to take a flight in one of the planes but if you're so inclined, go for it.

This museum has much to be proud of; make time for it and soak it all in.

So helpful!

By TeG85 |

Very nice selection of WWII planes and memorabilia. However, the real gem are the volunteers. They obviously have a passion for sharing their passion. Multiple people stopping and explaining things to us as we wandered around. Very helpful. Great place with great people.

Veterans available to answer questions
Great day

Outstanding experience!

By SoCalGuy101 |

A very nice small museum. Lots of unique aircraft to see up close. Some one-of-a-kind aircraft even. The docents were excellent. We spent about 30 minutes with one. Found out he was from our hometown and worked with a relative of ours. He was very eager to show us around and answered all questions. Talked to 3 or 4 other docents and they were all excellent. Talked to lots of other volunteers that work on the aircraft. All were very nice and talkative.
A few things to check before going:
1. It's Arizona and it gets hot. Several exhibits are outdoors. Go early in the morning.
2. Several of the planes still fly and they participate in nearby air shows. If there is an airshow nearby, plan on several planes being gone. We went to an air show at Luke AFB on Sunday. When we were at the museum Monday, we saw 4 or 5 planes both days. So check the air show schedule.
3. They have some special events (dinners, dances, etc.) and when the do, the museum will be closed for a day or so before as they set up. Be sure to check the website for conflicts.
4. AAA discounts on tickets. Saves about $3. Be sure to ask.
Overall an outstanding day. I'll go back next time I'm in the area.

Absolutely Amazing

By skfrmby |

Very visitor friendly. Excellent exhibits and knowledgeable staff.
Definitely a place to visit when in Mesa, AZ!

Talk to a WW2 B-17 pilot and crawl inside a WW2 B-17 bomber, that still flies.

By RobInSanDiego |

My wife and I came to see the large collection of well preserved military aircraft. The staff were very friendly and helpful. All are volunteers. The highlight, though, was talking to volunteer Fred Engstrom, who is now 97 years old! He flew 25 bombing missions as a pilot of a B-17 bomber in World War Two. He is still very alert and is sharp as a tack. I learned a lot from him, and it was a an honor to talk to such a part of living history. Even the youngest World War Two vets are in their late 90's now, and there are so few alive still.

Another big highlight was being able to climb inside a B-17 bomber that still flies. It has been perfectly restored by the Commemorative Air Force volunteers. They also had a flying C-47 transport plane (the military version of the civilian DC-3).

I highly recommend this museum. It is also great to take kids too, so they can talk to people who were part of history. The docents are good at explaining things to the kids too. It only cost $15 for an adult ticket. A great value.

Into old Air Force planes?

By Happy |

This is a large and really interesting collection of old Air Force planes. It is a great history lesson.

It use to be the Confederate Air Force before we lost our sense of Humor

By David L |

If you love vintage War planes. Then you should seriously think about checking these folks out. I found them to friendly and had a vast knowledge about their birds. So if you want your little boy out for some fun and great Memories. Then you might consider this event.

Great place to take the family

By Jaime D |

Visited with my two older children and dad. The museum was enjoyed by all! You can crawl through a couple of the planes. We watched one of the smaller planes take off and land. Lots of planes and interesting artifacts to look at. We stayed for a couple of hours.

Definitely do not miss

By Kevin T |

The collection of planes are very impressive and they let you get right up to the planes. They even let you board a couple of them, if they are available. However the the extra exhibits, like the actual flight jackets, as an example are also very unique. The real stars of the museum are the guides, you can join any of them as they tour the planes and get several different points of view. Their passion for what they do is commendable and their stories and insights are priceless.I consider myself somewhat of a history buff and even I was amazed at some of their stories.

this is more of a man place

By Billy B |

The museum is very interesting for the men. I don't know enough about planes to be entertained. My husband certainly enjoyed himself.

Absolutely love this place

By divisiblebyzero |

You don't have to love airplanes to enjoy this place but if you do - or even if you just have a fondness and appreciation for all things military, especially historical military aircraft - then you'll absolutely love this place and spend a LOT of time checking out its many aircraft on site. We live about 15 minutes from the place so on occasion we'll see a beautiful B17 or B25 bomber flying out of its Falcon Airfield overhead - what an awesome sight to see. If you're lucky, you'll be there on a day when one of the many veterans who frequent the museum are there and sharing stories of their service. Awesome.

Fly Grounded

By gypsypants2000 |

If you have a heart that has always wanted to take flight because the flying machines are fabulous, this is a destination for you. My beautiful wife considers airplanes the ultimate in engineering, so down we went. I, who prefer sailboats, was as fascinated with the variety and completeness of the machinery. We spent all day there. Add to that the docents were flyboys and lassies who were knowledgeable because they cut their cloth in those seats. If second to anywhere, it could only be the one at the Smithsonian, but barely.

Inspiring, modern, well cared for.

By ssparkd |

Went to see the bombers fly in this October. A bit pricey, but they do a lot of work. Seems there should be some discount for veteran (no pay for disabled but full otherwise). Lots to see and read. Could spend 3 hours for sure.

Nice museum for history and aviation fans!

By Beth43323 |

This was an active place on Sat morning when we saw two WW2 bombers take off on excursion flights. My husband, a GA pilot, enjoyed seeing these flight-worthy planes and hearing their engines. Many volunteer docents that provide more info and context. Nice videos and info signage.

Sparkling clean warbirds!

By SKnBK |

LOTS of vintage aircraft from wwI, wwII and more! You can also ride in a few of them, if you can afford it! The cost of keeping these planes airworthy is staggering, but if I could afford it, it is a worthy cause to keep history alive! The volunteers all have great stories! plan to roam around for at least an hour then walk out onto the ramp for more!

A must see

By jmwnuk |

Great for kids of all ages. Help them to understand the past, so they can learn and work towards a better future.

This is a great place. Lots of historic airplanes at an indoor location. Kids will enjoy the variety of aircraft. The staff is very knowledgeable.

Beautifully restored aircraft.

By _missionbliss77 |

Small but really nice place to visit if you enjoy restored aircraft. If you are in the Phoenix area and like things like this you will enjoy the museum.

Really enjoyable, B17 awesome

By Barbara |

The two hangers had a great assortment of planes and exhibits. The second hanger where they work on the planes was awesome and something we had never seen in other areo museums. We were lucky because they are working on a B17 and we got to go through it! That is something I won’t forget!

AF Museum

By Mutnauq |

GREAT place to go if you love old vintage airplanes. Bring the kids, bring Grandma and Grandpa and have a blast. Open most days, especially on the weekend. Check the internet for times and fees. They also have a open houses with military vehicles that is a must to see.

Great Collection

By Karjimcon |

My buddy and I spent a couple of hours immersed in aviation. The WWII aircraft were very cool as well as more modern planes and helicopters. Interesting to see a Russian mig fighter up close and personal. The docents are great and very enthused about the collection.

Loved Walking Through the B-17

By jbushman2017 |

Having been to many air museums, I expected to see more while I was here. But what is here is quite unique. This place has taken old airplanes and restored many of them so they can still be piloted and fly. The B-17 is the crown Jewel here and because you are allowed to walk through the entire plane it offers a unique experience I have never had from similar museums. The docents were especially great at providing insight into each and every plane.

Immaculately restored B-17!

By PMtolemy |

This unassuming museum is really worth the time to visit. It has a small but splendidly maintained variety of vintage WWII aircraft, plus a lot of other war memorabilia. It has some other vintage aircraft from WWI to Vietnam. The all volunteer staff is friendly and knowledgeable.

Amazing experience!

By Kathryn S |

What an amazing museum! They have so many unique and historically significant aircraft as well as other pieces of history. It is arranged so you can move through history, with interesting artifacts and stories. So much to learn, see, and do. We did not do a cockpit tour this trip but will definitely come back for that!
If you are a history buff, an aircraft enthusiast or like museums this is the place to go!

If you like aeronautics you'll enjoy this venue.

By Dave H |

We were there for a wedding reception, believe it or not. The groom was a volunteer or paid worker there. Even my wife, who is not into aeronautics per se, enjoyed seeing the vintage planes.

Pilots wanting to share their knowledge!

By Angela |

All of the people were so nice and so knowledgeable! Most were pilots and just wanted to share what they knew! Very family oriented and you felt like you were just hanging out with all of them. My 13 year old son had the opportunity to fly one of the planes and they treated him so awesome! If you are into aviation and history, do t miss this place!

Cool Museum, lots of planes.

By Tom K |

We really enjoyed this place. Great, knowledgeable staff who are retired AF I believe. They could not have been more helpful. Many planes on display and loads of features on different events, groups. You can get up close to all planes and look in many and enter a couple of them. Great for people really into the AF or just casual tourists looking for something interesting to see.

WWII Aviation History

By nancy k |

We loved this museum -- it's spotless and well organized. The planes on display are in beautiful condition and the volunteers are enthusiastic and helpful. Telling the personal stories of the veterans really illuminates history.

Memorable museum and staff

By robertandrosereyes |

We got lost getting there, but once we arrived the staff was welcoming, especially Dave. My husband loves museums, and we spent almost 5 hours here, but though I'm not into museums as much as my husband, it was very enjoyable and I learned much. There are some places to sit too and I was glad we could take pictures inside.

Fabulous Flying Aviation Museum

By billAZ2013 |

As a long time private pilot I have always been interested in WWII aircraft. The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) is a national organization that has been in business for over 50 years. Their mission is to preserve and fly these amazing war machines. Mesa is home to the Arizona Wing of the CAF at Falcon Field. You can actually purchase a ride on a B-17 or B-25 and C-47 and other planes!

I enjoyed is so much that I joined as a volunteer member.

Nice display of aircraft if you are not in Tucson...Schedule a flight while you are there

By Chris_Mesa |

I have been here a couple of times with family but my last visit was for a flight which was amazing.

Air Force Museum

By Cynthia E |

Had a a wonderful, interesting time here. The people working there were very knowledgeable, friendly and willing to share their time with you. Only wish we had more time to spend there.

A great visit even on a rainy day.

By Atlanta1965 |

For a relatively small space (besides the large hanger), this place had a lot to see and read. The 4 of our group went in 4 different directions, but all 4 of us were not ready to go after more than 3 hours. Experienced military folks were in abundance, and more than willing to share even more information. All 4 of us had a wonderful visit. If it had not been a rainy day, I imagine we would have spent more time outside.

Loved Our Visit to this Attraction--Wonderful People

By Patricia B |

We are retired Air Force, and love the history of aviation. The exhibits were very well done, they had some amazing aircraft/components, and the staff were just incredible. You could tell they love helping out the visitors. The attraction is free to active duty military and disabled vets. You can sign up for flights in vintage aircraft--for a price of course. An unexpected pleasure in Mesa.

Great information and exhibits.

By Badgelady |

We had Bill as our guide. He walked us around the various planes and provided interesting and accurate historical information. One exhibit highlighted the role of women in flying aircraft in war. Several videos highlighted the role of aviation in war. Well worth the time spent here. All but 2 of the planes are real and are maintained by volunteer mechanics and workmen. There are a few planes that are available for visitors to take a short flight.

Amazing!

By Deborah F |

Took some out of town family here when they were visiting. I was really surprised at how amazing this museum was. Lots and lots of planes, and a few even allowed you to crawl up inside. Tons of information and you can take pics freely. We spent about an hour and a half here to see everything. A little pricey but we all thought it was worth it.

Worth the visit

By PSSRADIOS |

Spent parts of two days at the museum enjoying the airplanes, many of which still fly. On the second day, they were working on the C-47 and we were able to watch it fly. Nothing more thrilling than to hear the old girl's engines come to life. They have several warbirds in the museum as well as others. Two of my favorites were a Lockheed Vega which is like the plane Amelia Earhart flew on her final flight. And the other was a Cessna T-50 Bobcat which is the same type featured in the first several episodes of the 1950's television show, Sky King. The museum has plenty to see, but not so much that you are exhausted at the end of your time there. Other highlights are a B-25, B-17, P-51, F-4, Mig 15 and 21 among others. Definitely worth stopping in!!!!

Super Impressive with attentive and knowledgeable staff

By Lou O |

To give our bodies a rest from hiking we visited this Museum. We weren't completely sure what to expect - but, Wow. The amount of aircraft on display from various wars was impressive. To be able to take rides in many of them is pretty unusual (we did not ride). Everyone on staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. To be able to walk around each of the aircraft was special.

Large selection of Aircraft to see

Nice location to take the kids to view many historical aircraft, make sure you give your self enough time so walk around and learn about aviation history.

Great place to connect with history

By dnymud |

Fantastic place to visit. Informative and beautifully put together. I highly recommend everyone to visit. The best part was getting to shake the hand of a 98 year old fighter pilot❤️ The chance of a lifetime to say THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.

A must do, with great Arizonan hospitality

By Steam Sapper |

If you have any interest in history, amazing personal stories, aircraft or respect for the past, this museum is a must do. It’s intimate, the exhibits are very accessible and the background stories are fascinating.

Good for all ages; kids to get up close to some amazing aircraft and materials, whilst mum & dad will can choose how much they will read.

This was my second visit, the last 7 years ago. The feeling of friendliness of the associates remain fantastic, all of them having time for a chat. I was especially lucky to spend time with the Director who was not only passionate about what they do, but also a really nice guy.

Please visit and support this voluntary and very professional ‘living history’ legacy.

Flight Museum literally "takes you back in time"!

By RLFord |

I've visited the CAF Museum on 3 different occasions and found things of interest each time. The most recent visit was the best, as it was on a Saturday morning they were taking people up for rides in the historic WWII planes. To do such a close walk-around of the B-17 and B-25 is great! Then to watch as the planes ROAR TO LIFE, taxi out and take off is AWESOME!!

The public can make reservations to fly along on one of the two planes for about $400 a person. A bit on the spendy side, but if you've ever wanted that experience it's easily had!

Lots of other classic planes are in the hangers, and mechanics are often there working on planes and answering questions. Lots of memorabilia to look at, a small theatre with videos to watch plus a gift shop. Admission is $5, or FREE to any veteran. I'd highly recommend it for any flight enthusiast, young or old.

Take a flight into history

By Jedgar H |

In March of 2018 I checked an item off my bucket list and booked a flight on their B-17 Sentimental Journey. The staff and crew were fantastic, and the memory will last me forever. As enjoyable as the crew made our flight I couldnt help but think of all the young men who flew on planes like that during the war and suffered through the cold, fear and weariness that must have been with them each time they went up. If anyone is considering doing this, please dont hesitate. These machines of our past are quickly disappearing.

Outstanding museum and docents!

By Talon38 |

This was our second visit here, the first many years ago. Outstanding museum and the docents walk with you and provide a very accurate WWII history of airpower (three of us are USAFA grads but didn't let on). This is a learning experience for everyone in the family from kids to WWII vets. Great time!!

Amazing military aircraft musem

By KevinAGould |

You will be astonished at the great aircraft at the museum. They even have a working plane available to reserve the ride of a lifetime. Bring your veteran to see the planes the kept us safe for the last fifty plus years. You can see personal stories of the vets that flew these planes. A must see.

Modern War History and Airplanes

By SP_realmeals |

I'm not crazy about seeing films of live war action. In fact, it's kind of depressing the way it is glorified. But, I appreciate our armed services, those brave folks who go into battle. There are also exhibits about civilian and women involved with the war efforts. Most of this museum is dedicated to WWII.

The best ... wonderful trip into history

By John L |

The Museum has wonderful displays and aircraft brought to life by the docents, all volunteers and authorities on the exhibits. Lots of space to wander and enjoy the planes - great moments in flight history. Museum is easy to find, plenty of parking and reasonable admission price. If you are in Mesa make time to go.

Fly Away in History

By DaveEAndreaL |

During Dec.21, 2018 my wife, blind brother, and I visited the Commemorative Air Force Museum in Mesa, AZ. We had a very nice experience. I called ahead of time and made arrangements for my brother to have a hands-on tour. Dennis Lemon indicated there would be a docent available to show us around so we could all "see" the aircraft on display. Bill and Tom were our guides. It was Tom's first time showing a blind person the exhibits. My brother commented to him that he did a GREAT job. My brother is somewhat hampered in his stability, but if he wasn't we were told we could crawl thru the B-17. My wife and I have been thru the museum twice before and suggest to anyone in the area that interested in aviation to definitely visit this facility. We will be back, again.

What a Fun Experience

By MustTravel88 |

We spent several hours looking at all the planes indoors then went to see the the B17-G Sentimental Journey on the flight line. We toured the inside of the plane. What an experience. This plane's engine sound was used in the making of the Masters of the Air Mini Series. They opened the bomb bay doors and we were able to see the autographs of the men that served. We also got to see the B-25J Bomber.
Our guide was so knowledgeable and kind. He made the entire experience so interesting and we got to know about his service. All the volunteers had so much knowledge and experience. A must if you are an aviation enthusiast while in the Mesa/Phoenix area. Highly recommend.

Air force museum at Falcon Field

By barkinbarb |

Great place to get up close with war planes. Some are available to get inside of. Kids enjoy sitting in the cockpit. It's really exciting to see them fly!

Fantastic

By Bill M |

I am an Air Force Vet and former Board member of a WW2 museum. I found this museum to be top notch! A really nice static display of aircraft and a few vehicles in Hanger #1. Then you can walk out where a lot of volunteers are working on maintaining and restoring vintage aircraft. They have a small gift shop as well but the selection is pretty good. There are also volunteers in both hangers to answer questions you may have. Great for a younger generation who haven't an idea what those men and women went through during that time. Vets and seniors do receive a discount.

What a cool place

By marcelor576 |

Took my sister and her husband here while they visited. And I thought it was a cool place, the planes the history what a great place. It's a good place where you can spend about 2-3 hours the most. Gift shop is cool a little pricy.
My kids enjoyed it as well, although you have to make sure they don't wondered off, a lot of loose parts in the hanger. Folks always willing to stop and tell you about the planes.

A real treat if you like history and planes

By Jan F |

I used to go a lot when I lived in Mesa. Just spend hours in this museum. A real treat is when the bombers fly in after a tour, "Maid in The Shade" and "Sentimental Journey". Just beautiful. I live in Yuma now by the Marine Air Base and I will be spending a lot of time there too.

Hidden Gem

By Ldisfine |

A very interesting part of our history. Each plane with the history displayed, the staff more than happy to answer any question. You may take your time and walk at your leisure. It was a great way to spend a few hours of our day with out of town guess.

I learn something every time I visit.

By Bennett S |

It's the best aviation museum in the Phoenix metro area. Not just static displays but something is flying almost every weekend: B-17 Sentimental Journey, or B-25 Maid in the Shade, or a T-6 letting an old WWII Vet relive his past. Throughout the week people are working in the restoration hangar. There is always something new and always something to learn. In years past I have met Tuskegee Airmen, Sergei Sikorsky, and Jessica Cox and many dedicated Veterans and volunteers.

Enjoyed walking into and among the planes and the Docents.

Great afternoon! I went solo. no Line. great Arizona weather. Knowledgeable people to talk to and a variety of airplanes.

Airplanes and more

By beachwkr |

Many different airplane and war history..learned about things you didn't remember or were taught in school. Up close and personal. Great place to go alone, with someone great for kids and people vacationing from elsewhere. A do not miss place in Mesa, AZ

Even great for non-airplane buffs!

By SmallWonder |

Even if you aren't an airplane buff you will love this place. Nice selection of planes on display in one hanger, and in another hanger are the planes that they actually restore and fly (yes, you can tick that off your bucket list!) The people (volunteers) working there are very knowledgeable and friendly. No question goes unanswered. Be sure and wander around the perimeter to see the great informational displays and also watch the documentary/s in the movie room. I had no idea the military was using drones in the late 1940s. This place is packed with history and memorabilia, but I didn't feel overwhelmed or bombarded (no pun intended) with too much information. Since some of the planes are outside, it many not be a great idea to visit in the hottest part of day or summer, but if you do, stay hydrated. Worth the visit. We left humbled and hopefully a bit more educated.

A Fun Time

By Ron S |

This is a very interesting place to visit, especially if the bombers aren’t out on tour in the summer. But still a lot of history to enjoy.

History in Front of Your Eyes

By JDSoui |

The flyable and non-flyable planes in the 2 hangars tell a story of years past. The memorabilia and supplemental information along the walls add further context to those planes. However, the guides and even WWII veterans present share personal stories to offer unique perspectives relating each of the artifacts making the experience personal. What this museum may lack in size, it amply makes up in volume of quantity of information.

Tucson, AZ

By Denise T |

A pleasant and relaxing day. Not recommended for midsummer. Plenty of history to see. Close To other attractions in Tucson.

Had a wonderful time and experience.

By Williejim07 |

The exploration, reading and listening took us a little over 2 hours. We really didn't know what to expect but were quite impressed with the knowledge the guides and mechanics had as well as stories about how they got certain aircraft and more details than we could retain.

Don't miss this excellent air museum....

By Phil C |

Lots to see and do here......and you can even fly in one of their planes if you are so inclined!!

The folks here were extremely helpful and knowledgeable...we spent a couple of hours here and didn't see everything. We did watch the C47 take off and the mechanics working on the B17. If you like aviation and/or history....this is the place to go.

A definite MUST for fans of aviation!

By Mary M |

Our whole family of 8 with 2 small children and 6 adults had a great time checking out all the aircraft. It was fun to get to climb up ladders and peek inside many of them. And, especially enjoyed climbing through the length of one of the bigger planes outside. The girls went through multiple times and thought it was awesome. And, we got to see them fire up one of the other planes and take off on the airport right next to the museum. The guides are also very friendly and knowledgeable. Great place to visit!

Amazing Museums. Fabulous Old Planes

By 3-doxies |

Tons of old planes, great videos running non stop with chairs to sit down so you can watch them. Every fall the bombers return for air shows they've been doing all over the country. We got to watch them arrive in Oct. Tons of vets there. You can also book rides in historic warplanes, a 1944 B-17G bomber & an F4 Phantom. We didn't book rides but I sure would should I go back. Everyone from age 10 to age 92 loved it.

Flight into history on the B25 Mitchell

By DaleL943 |

I cannot explain in words how amazing this flight was. I participated in Penticton BC and went on a flight in the B25. It was one of the top ten things I've done in my life. I cannot say enough about it. The Air Force personnel who flew this plane and others like it during WW2 should never be forgotten. Once you have been inside something like this you can't imagine the hardship and danger they faced daily during the war. This flight will change you and you must take a flight on one of AZCAFs planes before they disappear. Ten thumbs up! I'd go again tomorrow if they came back.......

Great Find in the Desert

By Lynata |

We spent several hours walking around this place and very impressed with the layout and displays. They had much more than I thought they would and the volunteers were so friendly and knowledgeable.

Nice tour

By anwarsaeed2710 |

Had a chance to see an old war planes. Planes participated in world war 1 and 2. Very nice. Student will have much interest to see the real planes as well to be in close watch of planes particularly been used by a famous war pilots.

Aircraft museum

By Mike W |

Great exhibits. Many aircraft from different eras to look at. You can get up close and personal with the planes. Some you can look inside the cockpit. Large display of aircraft engines, particularly radial engines. The docents were very knowledgeable and eager to answer questions. Very well worth the time and the admission price. Will probably visit again.

Friendly and knowledgeable staff.

By Tumen |

Compared to other air museums I've visited, this one had the most old-timers on site to answer questions and chat with you. Having access to these guys really differentiates the museum experience from browsing photos online. The interior is jam packed with planes (mainly WWII) and exhibits from bombing plans to field living quarters. There are some large aircraft outdoors, including a bomber that you can walk through and try out the gunner positions.

I wasn't originally planning on visiting this museum but it's close to Phoenix and a couple of hours would be sufficient for a pit stop visit.

Very good museum!

By Bill C |

Really enjoyed our 2.5 hr visit here. Every group gets a personal guide (docent) who is very informative.
The museum has a really nice array of US military aircraft. The whole place has a very personal feel to it; we were able to go inside a B 17 and old DC 3. Great history and a very good set up overall. Check out the schedules were you can arrange for rides in some of these vintage aircraft!

Moving and educational

By Oliver S |

It’s not a big museum, but it’s well worth visiting. The docents are all very knowledgeable and friendly, they have all kinds of stories, our guide, Jim, never stopped talking and both educated and entertained us. There are planes from WWI to today, pictures are allowed everywhere. We got lucky to see an exercise of flights in formation. A must, if you have any interest in aviation and or history.

Nice place to visit to get out of the sun

By dads2vette |

Very nice museum with excellent exhibits. I don't think small children will be very interested if they have to just "walk around". If parents ate willing to get them excited about the cool stuff it would be a win-win! These planes are true works of art.

Absolutely Amazing

By 417peggyw |

I took 25 teenagers to this museum. They loved it, the docent was so patient and knowledgeable about world war II and the planes and bombers. The kids loved getting to go inside of the planes. Great world war II experience.

Interesting but kind of small

By Jo- T |

This was a find for us after visiting family in Mesa. Pretty interesting with some interesting planes but only 1 hanger, so kind of small and a bit pricey at $15/pp. We still enjoyed it and especially being able to walk right up to the cockpits.

Great museum for aircraft geeks

By Mongo1234 |

I've been fortunate to visit aircraft museums throughout the United States and England. This one ranks right up there with the best.
It is relatively small but easy to get around. There are not an overwhelming number of planes on display which is good. It was a treat to see the fully restored B-17 in the back hangar as well as the B-26 Mitchell.
It is worth the admission price and three hours of your day to take this trip back in time.

Air museum

By Maribeth c |

This museum is a must for single or family. The planes are awesome and beautiful. The volunteer staff will answer any and all questions you or your children may have. No question goes until answered.

Such an interesting museum!

By Flyinspanner |

Spent an enjoyable few hours here, the ‘guides’ are so friendly and enthusiastic about the aircraft housed here.
Great social history exhibits around the aircraft which are laid out in a chronological order. Loved being able to go inside the ‘Dakota’
Great being able to ask questions to the mechanics in the hangar working on the aircraft, it’s really engaging.
As I’m involved in aviation I loved every minute of our visit, my wife -who initially, didn’t really really seem to thrilled to head there, actually really enjoyed it too.

My only regret is that some of the aircraft were on tour, and so I didn’t get to book a ride - a definite bucket list item✅ My wife quite fancied a ride in an open cockpit aircraft too! .... we may have to return in cooler months👍😎

92 year old Dad Thoroughly enjoyed it!

By blbruehl |

Don't miss seeing this piece of history if you had/have any affiliation to the military. My 92 year old father-in-law worked on many of these old planes and knew something about every one of them. And climbing up the ladder to get a better peek inside was like watching a kid in a candy store! We thoroughly enjoyed seeing this museum.

Warbirds in the Sky

By Tony S |

The museum was established in 1978, in Falcon Field and is the 10th unit of the Commemorative Air Force. It is the home of one of the largest Commemorative Air Force units in the world. On exhibit are classic American and foreign combat planes, many of which are the last remaining warbirds of their kinds. The museum officials will charge you a modest fee if you want to take a ride on the Douglas C-47 Skytrain Dakota “Old Number 30” or the Beechcraft C-45 Expeditor.

Here is something interesting that I learned. “Old Number 30” is named after a mule, serial number 30, that was one of four mules flown along with four partisan commandos in the dead of night from Brindisi, Italy to a top-secret site in the Balkans in 1944. Mule #30, along with 35 other mules hauled twelve 75-mm guns through the mountains to attack Nazi occupiers.

Great spot to walk back in time!

By George S |

$12 gets you on board a time machine. The restored B-17 and her fantastic companions are great. Super setting in Mesa, AZ. Nice collection of airplanes and memorabilia. Flying Fortress film is great to sit through. Lots of very helpful docents around to answer questions.

Small but great!

By Markus L |

Even if you touch the history of these warbirds the frist time you will be amazed. The displayed planes give you a good overview. Staff is very friendly and won`t get tired about your questions. In the hangar you see on-going maintenance or renovation. I was lucky to get a chance to climb into the B-17 they have there, a once-in-a-lifetime experience! Just go and enjoy!

Airplanes! Airplanes!

By limeyca |

First you are met with a person who explains the exhibits and way around. You get to see many, many static aircraft and read about the history an their flying missions. There is a theatre with really interesting presentations. Also a hangar with rebuilds of aircraft going on. Also there are airplanes outside with steps up so you can see the inside and also inside of a bomber aircraft. A good time was had by all.

Neat Gem of a Museum

By Leola B |

Found this place when searching online for things to do while on staycation in Mesa. Two hangers of exhibits and a couple planes outside. Many of tge planes are privately owned and on loan to the museum. Some parts of the year they do offer rides in a couple of these vintage planes. The docents are very knowledgeable and friendly. Would recommend checking their websites for admission specials and special events.

Great place to visit

By Airdog13 |

Went there with an old pilot friend of mine...Enjoyed all the old aircraft and a look back in history...The folks selling tickets were very professional and polite...Lots of things to see if you like military airplanes.

Comemerative Air Force Museum, Mesa

By jayw760 |

A large hanger with military aircraft from WW I thru Vietnam. Hour long tours are given with knowledgeable volunteers. A second area houses the repair and restoration hanger. Two operational WW II bombers may be on display, however in September 2021 the two were out on tour.

HISTORY OVER THE DECADES

By patriciamS8347PD |

Extremely facinating . several of my Uncles where in the Armed Forces during WW11 and during a open house the museum had i was able to get a close up look at their aircraft they could have possibly flown. The staff were super at explaining all the ins and outs of these great fighters

A must see for everyone

By Lonestarbc |

A great place to visit and see the great planes that have a big part in our history. An extensive museum and many people to talk to. You can also book a ride in a B-25 or a B-17. Nice souvenir shop and even nicer people

History and the planes to see - AWESOME

By DakotaDixie1 |

We (two couples) spent almost 3 hours there. Seeing the planes and reading the history well worth it. Lots to learn
Nice gift shop - happy we stopped there

Interesting for the history buffs

By BritAbroadHere |

Great museum. Good selection of planes and other historic pieces. Enjoyable for a family day out as it is big enough to satisfy the plane enthusiasts, but small enough for it not to be boring for those of us that don't share the same enthusiasm. A good day out.

Wow!

By MFrench369 |

This is definitely history while still in progress. You get to see, look, learn, and climb into history. Air Force personnel are available to answer questions as well as to add details.

Aircrafy buffs and WWII, Korean War, Viet Nam Vets!

By j0urneyman69 |

Flying Aces, and wanna be's will salivate at the sights and sounds here in East Mesa. This is a great place for history buffs as well as those who fought in these conflicts. A real Air Power showplace!

Great place. Very informative. Kids get to crawl around inside of planes. Can take your time. Plans are inside under roof.

PT-17 Stearman

By JDB |

I was able to have the chance to ride in an old WW2 trainer, a PT-17 Stearman bi-plane. It was quite an amazing experience. The ground staff as well as the pilot were all very professional, friendly, and knowledgable. Easy to find location, great little museum (it is by no means anything remotely close to a Smithsonian, but not bad for Arizona). Great collection of historic aircraft which you are able to take a ride in. I would highly recommend going for a tour in the skies in one of these old planes. Quite the memory.

GREAT PLANE MUSEUM

Outstanding

By trn81 |

I love air museums and this is a good one. Not the best ever but pretty good. The customer service there is absolutely amazing. I got a lot of insight into the displays by talking with five different volunteers that were working there. Each one of them approached me and wanted to assist. It was awesome.

Great planes

By Paula M |

Awesome WWII planes. Visitors can climb in real B-17 and B-25 planes. See actual inscriptions by the crew of the Doolittle Raiders on the B-25 bombers!

Must See Attraction

By travelteamej2 |

Stopped in and didn't know what to expect. Experienced a super friendly and very knowledgeable staff. The staff is very eager to share their knowledge with you. We were memorized by the collection of military planes there. A must see for the vintage plane enthusiasts. They also have a large gift shop. They are a non profit organization dedicated to preserving this piece of history. You can also make reservations for an actual ride in one of these pieces of history.

YOU CAN LOOK OR TAKE A RIDE

By tommyboy |

This is a 1st class operation run by experienced Aviators ! They take pride in the facility and are always willing to tell you some great stories. At the entrance are bronze plaques, tributes to those that contributed to winning wars and the development of our mighty Air Force. Don't miss it.

Interesting and well worth the time and money to see

By Stell M |

Very interesting old planes from the air force . we even got to sit in the gunners seat in a b-52 bomber.

Must see when visiting Mesa AZ.

By Capt65 |

I have past this museum many times and never stopped in. Last week while my parents were in town it was raining and we wanted to find an indoor activity. My dad was in the Korean War and I thought he might enjoy it.

We went and much to our surprise this was a fantastic museum. So much to see and interact with, the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. Just a great time. Some of the planes you can even get inside for a look, Including a bomber.

If you like history and planes. GO!

Nostalgic; go in mild weather!

By planetc |

Overall, it was a good experience, definitely recommended. First and foremost: you must go when the weather is mild, because there is no climate control inside the huge hangars, and part of the exhibit is outdoors. We visited on a cold, windy winter day, and I was chilled to the bone, to a point that I could not really enjoy the exhibits fully. I have seen several museums of flight, and this one is different for the nostalgic tone, with a strong focus on the golden age of military airplanes from the 1930s to the 1960s. It appears to be run by volunteers and enthusiasts, mostly older men. We talked to two of them, and I noticed that they mostly addressed my husband and nearly ignored me; perhaps a little cultural bias there, but I did not mind. The artifacts we saw were very interesting, we spent about 3 hours there (after which I could not take the cold anymore) and we did not see everything. There is lots of WWII material. There is a B-17 bomber that you can enter to see inside, but the space there is very narrow, not suitable to people who are not fit or have movement impairments.
