I visited the Field Museum on Monday, May 12th, 2025, before catching a 7:20 PM flight from Chicago O’Hare Airport. Anticipating heavy traffic, I planned to leave the museum around 4:30 PM. While preparing to go, I had a few questions and approached Volunteer Emily for help.

She kindly answered all three of my questions. First, I asked how far the shared ride pickup area was from the main lobby—she told me it was only about two minutes away, which was very helpful. Next, I asked where the nearest restroom was, and she gave clear directions. Lastly, I asked if she could take a photo of me with the museum’s magnificent Maximo the Titanosaur skeleton. She kindly agreed and took a great photo.

Emily was friendly, professional, and very helpful during a stressful travel day. I really appreciate her assistance and want to thank her for going above and beyond!

Fun and informative

The specials on offer where interesting and would definitely go again the other exhibits what very informative mainly the Africa exhibit learning different part of history

One of the best

By Chase |

Easily one of the best museums I've ever been to. My family spent an entire day, from open to close and barely scratched the surface of what was available to see there. The exhibits were fascinating — especially the one about paleoamericans. The dinosaurs were great as well, although the 3D dinosaur movie was not necessarily worth the time we spent on it. If the city pass had allowed us to come back the next day, we probably would have spent another whole day there! I will definitely come back in a future vacation.

The Field Museum is housed in a beautiful historic building right on Lake Michigan and next to the Shedd Aquarium and the planetarium. It's easily accessible by train (metra) and/or bus. Unlike many of the museums/activities in Chicago, the museum doesn't require reservations nor timed tickets. This is very convenient for foreigners who do not have roaming cellular or wifi access while travelling.

Inside the museum is huge, with tons of exhibits and room to visit. The museum is split over two floors and is packed with artifacts from all four corners of the world. The dedicated Egypt room is quite good, especially the walkable replica of the tomb.

The Americas exhibit is huge, with tons of rooms that guide you through different regions and cultures. The only downside is that when I visited, many exhibits were covered up in an act of goodwill for the recent talks of artifact repatriation. While I agree with this move, it meant that entire sections of the Americas were blacked out with nothing to read or look at to compensate. It would have been good for the museum to explain why these artifacts were covered, or to replace them with other objects that are less sensitive for viewing.

Even though this museum is a "natural history" museum, its focus is much more anthropological. There are a few dinosaur bones to admire in the main lobby, and there are some exhibits with taxidermied animals, but there are many more ethnographic exhibits (Africa, China, America, etc.)

Overall, the museum is wonderful with lots of things to see. It can easily take an entire day and more to see everything. It is definitely the best museum/activity to do in Chicago. If you can only do one cultural thing while in Chicago, pick the Field Museum over the Shedd Aquarium.

All access pass worth it?

By Robert W |

All access pass to the Field is quite expensive and is probably not worth the total cost. The First Kings of Europe exhibit is exceptional. It features real gold, bronze, and copper artifacts mostly from Southeastern Europe. The Tang Hall of China exhibit also contained many original and ancient artifacts from China and will appeal to visitors who want to learn more about Chinese history and culture. The Death exhibit contained a lot of text, pictures, and replicas and a few actual artifacts that seems to have been cobbled together from the museum's collection. The 3D film about Sue was mildly interesting for an adult but probably had too little action to sustain a child's interest. The Underground Adventure seemed like a strange combination of a science exhibit and kid's fun house. Overall, I'd recommend visiting the excellent exhibits included in general admission and perhaps adding one special exhibit that appeals to your interests, perhaps the First Kings. The museum has so much to offer with general admission alone.

Love this museum. If you see the whole museum, it tells the story of animal life on earth. Minerals, too. Loved the Egyptian, humanoid and dinosaur exhibits. Learned that not all fossils are dinosaurs. Admission is $28, this tour gives you $1 savings. This museum could not be fully explored in one day. That many interesting things to see. Can meet many well known artifacts, like Sue, Lucy, and Bushman.

Great Natural History Museum

By Paul S |

The collection is housed in a massive building. The exhibits are very well done. The dinosaur area is outstanding, particularly Sue the T-Rex and Maximo the Titanosaur. The mammal and birds displays are excellent. We also enjoyed the Hall of China and Ancient Americas.

10/10 - Excellent

By Cryptic_Tourist |

I cannot recommend the Field Museum enough. My friends and I came here and spent hours and hours going through the exhibit and still didn’t get to see it all. I would love to come back and see even more! Seeing Sue in person was so cool but the Lions of Tsavo were the highlight for me.

If you want to see it all, make sure you devote an entire day or more and take lots of breaks. Bring snacks and drinks and maybe grab a bite to eat on site. We walked a LOT so make sure you have comfy shoes. This would be a great rainy day activity or cold winter day activity. We bought our tickets online and in advance and I would highly recommend doing that as well. Overall this was our favorite activity for our trip to Chicago!

By Emily M |

Had a really great day here….

Two things that could have been better communicated by the museum are the limited hours of the family PlayLab and that one restaurant was closed today.

But overall, it was so fun!! The kids loved it, especially the Hall of Dinosaurs and Unseen Oceans. Recommend doing the access pass for the Oceans and Underground exhibits—we loved both of them!!!

absolutely worth a visit!

By Paul Leenaerts |

The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago is definitely worth a visit! The collection is impressive and diverse, with exhibitions that are both educational and engaging. The arrangement of the dinosaurs is breathtaking and the interactive displays ensure that visitors really get involved in the exhibitions. In addition, the museum is beautifully designed and well maintained. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, which makes the overall experience even more enjoyable. Whether you are a lover of natural history or just looking for a fun and educational experience, the Field Museum is definitely recommended!

Amazing Museum

By DeeDeeJack |

We needed more time! There is so much to see at the Field Museum and we are planning a second trip to see the rest. Sue (T-Rex) was awesome along with the museum overall is very well put together for all ages, informative, interactive and entertaining. Highly recommend. Plan for a full day to get it all in and enjoy the restaurant inside the museum for lunch; they had some good options for a museum.

interesting exhibits, bad food service

By Nancy Y |

We went there in Mother's Day 2025. The exhibits are interesting, even though make things and entire sections of exhibits were not shown due to fears of cultural theft. We were getting tired around 2:30 pm, so we went down to the cafeteria. The coffee was bad and the cream of asparagus soup okay, but the grain bowl I got wasn't worthy of being called food, other than being made of otherwise edible material. The person who made it was rude and surly, and what she gave me was all but inedible. Horrible, horrible stuff. My partner said it was typical institutional food service, but I disagree. It was THE WORST THING I HAD EVER BEEN GIVEN AS FOOD.
I was tempted to bring it back and complain because it was NOT CHEAP, but, unfortunately, I didn't feel like making a fuss...

By Leandro S |

The Field Museum is a must for anyone that enjoys museum, and even not you’ll find an exhibit you like. The Egyptian and dinosaur exhibits are just dos. The reptile exhibit was nice but my only complaint was to small cages for some of the reptiles. Otherwise great museum

By Andrew T |

I came to see Sue after watching the documentary Dinosaur 13. I recommend watching it for the harrowing tale how Sue made it to Chicago.

Sue is the most complete T. rex skeleton ever found, and they are a beauty, lovingly curated by the Field Museum with a light show every few minutes.

I mean, you won’t find that in NYC. Only in Chicago.

Science museums aren’t my thing much anymore, but this was a must see and all them Dinos made me a kid again.

By Luca D |

Beautiful museum. Especially the collection of reconstructed dinosaur fossils and the path of earth history.
Absolutely mandatory visit of you are in Chicago

By jscropper76 |

We had a great time. Once you pay admission, everything cool cost extra. I’m so glad we had city pass. All the places you get to go, and the free stuff you get truly is worth the initial cost of city pass.

GO SEE SUE!!!

By 808nlc |

We stopped in here for a quick visit while in Chicago last week. The architecture of the museum itself is BEAUTIFUL!! The exhibits were all clean and in working order. The giant dinosaurs on display are amazing!! We needed to see SUE, and they did not disappoint.

worth seeing museum

By Reinhold P |

We were here on a very hot day and the museum was well attended. Unfortunately, only one entrance was open and we had to walk around the building. The dinosaur skeletons are worth seeing, as are the exhibitions. I strongly recommend booking online.

Field Museum Visit

By Norah M |

Enjoy T-Rex and other Dinosaurs almost reconstructed fully and imagine how life was like by that time. This Visit is highly recomendable with kids or family.

By Lindsay Folck |

The T-Rex ‘Sue’ is worth the visit. My teenage son enjoyed the dinosaur exhibits but he wants to be a paleontologist, so he might be biased.

You Won't Be Disappointed

By Jill P |

Holy wow! We had the best time here. The Field is one of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring museums I've ever been to. So many dinosaurs and other cool fossils! I can't imagine anyone being disappointed in the Field. Go early--we got there at opening, and it was so quiet.

By SnappleSpice |

The price of this ticket is hefty and I was disappointed I couldn’t get a discounted educator ticket because I teach in a different state. It’s a large museum, but several of the exhibits cost extra, and we just weren’t willing to spend even more money.

We came here mostly to see Sue, and that part of the museum was great. Lots of good information, and they even take your photo at the start of the exhibit (which you can buy at the end). I wish they played the audio more frequently, as we only caught the end of it and then had to wait what felt like a long time for it to play again.

Chicago's Once Major Museums

By Dena C |

The Field Museum has been favorite for my childhood and adult lives. The science fairs and special attractions have always been amazing. I loved being in the main majestic hall filled with the history of our world and the amazing Chicago's own Sue the T REX. I have been going since I was a child, then taking my children. However, I had looked forward to taking my grandchildren as they love dinosaurs and the Field Museum had always been a sightseeing staple.
Well today came and I was so looking forward to an amazing experience with my grand nuggets. Whar I found was a pathetic shell of what was once a great experience. The Museum has been reduced to 1/3 of the size it once was (even by looking at the architecture from the outside) the once grand main floor with impressive statues ending at Sue the massive T REX with the mural across that back wall has been reduced to a couple of elephants nothing of substance.
Now Sue is hidden away in a corner of the 3rd floor, instead of her majestic glory she is now small and unimpressive. My dinosaur obsessed grandchildren were disappointed, as I had built up her magnificence that I had always experienced. Even comparing pictures from my youth, my childrens youth and the ones I took with my grandchildren the magic is gone.
I was fortunate to get free all access passes for our outing today, so luckily I didn't spend a fortune, $30 on parking, $30 on one 3D movie and $30 on snack/lunch. Totally more than it was worth.
I will be sticking with MSI, the Aquarium and the Planetarium from now on, because quite honestly the Field Museum is NOT worth the time or money anymore.

Amazing museum of easy access

By Eduardo S |

Great museum, worth a visit. The museum is huge, so unless you go through all the exhibitions quickly, it will be impossible for you to see everything in one day. Take a map and focus on what you find most interesting. It can be easily reached by metro.

For the Curious and Interested!

By michaeld95062 |

This review is for adults. If you’re curious, love to learn, love to travel the world I can see everything, and are interested in nature with a few side exhibits are equally interesting, this is a great place to spend two or three half days. my wife and I got there and then because of its size and our different interests, split up to explore. When we met a couple hours later, we realized that half day was not enough. I was mesmerized by the plant displays in the extensive info on coffee, plants to Edible nuts to mangoes. I only got 1/3 of the way through. she was fascinated by the animal family displays with some displays also showing their skeletons. For bird lovers, a couple hours in the bird section may be enough. It was sad to see the extinct birds of North America. A great place for a weekday date, or a couple half days for immersive experience.

Large, family friendly museum with lots to explore!

By Jsbachman |

Family friendly with plenty of different history exhibits to see! Plan to spend 3+ hours there- I spent 2 hours for a quick walk through of only 5 or so halls. Huge features include Sue the T-Rex, the most complete T-Rex skeleton found so far.
Also features several rotating exhibits, currently one is about cats which will be a favorite of any cat lover!

By Randeelou |

Great museum! Plan to spend a few hours as there is much to see. All of the dinosaur stuff is great! Especially SUE
Must go if in Chicago.

Dinosaur bones are a must

By matl2022836 |

Dinosaur bones were interesting to look at; as were the gems and the jewelry exhibits. The mummies were a favorite for the kids. Wish they were open later hours in the summer.

Great museum with too much taxidermy

By Martha B |

I liked this museum, but the seeming miles of taxidermy were ridiculous. Maybe there was a time in the past that the only way ordinary people could see animals was through taxidermy, but get rid of this stuff - it's creepy and offputting. Loved the Hall of Gems, Egyptian, and the indigenous people's exhibits.

Refreshing

By Glyndale L |

We enjoyed every aspect of the museum. There was so much to see and talk about . We even stop in the cafeteria and had a tasty snack.

Great, worthwhile experience

By Tiffany B |

This is an awesome experience. If you’re very interested in the Field Museum, especially Sue the T-Rex, this is a great tour. It’s a scheduled tour, so someone will meet you at the east entrance and guide you through the museum. You should arrive around 745-8am. Since this is about an hour before the museum actually opens, you can’t roam the museum unaccompanied, the tour guide will be with you the whole hour. But you can look at whatever exhibits interest you, and the guide will take you there and give you information. You get the museum to yourself for that hour, which makes picture taking and exploring fun and easy. Highly recommend.

Fun to see the dinosaurs but once is enough.

By TWade |

I’ve been to the Field Museum before and this time we had three teen boys. There were ALOT of school children visiting and I have to say it felt overwhelming and stifling. We spent a couple of hours before everyone was ready to leave. We chose the Underwater exhibit and thought it would be a nice movie we could sit and watch which really wasn’t the case, people coming and going, hard to hear, etc. it seemed like they could take note from the museum of Science and industry where there was an orderly flow of people and managed more effectively.

Jurassic Experience

By Ted East |

What a great museum with a huge variety of displays. Of course the "Sue" T-Rex display is a fan favorite, but there were so many other things to see while there. We went between 10 & 11 and was very quiet.

Very Good

By Arvind P |

Really enjoyed and worth the time spent. Little bit confusing inside each exhibit, better guidance, missed or saw something twice

By Lorna E |

The museum had some interesting exhibits, but overall appeared run down. All of the glass needed cleaning, as it was difficult to read and see into the exhibits. Really kind of depressing to see the neglect.

By Maria E |

We enjoyed our visit to the Museum and it was wonderful seeing all the the Collection.
A lots of History.
The staff members were great, helping with all the activities that information.

Great to visit if the Shedd is sold out

By Global30958265160 |

We weren't able to get into the Shedd, so opted for the Field Museum instead and were pleasantly suprised by the amount of exhibits here. We couldn't ever see everything in the 2 hours we had! Amazing place.

By Tim C |

We were there for 5 hours and could have stayed longer! So much to see and do. We specifically went to see the cats exhibit which was very fun, and then explored everything we could from the American history area to the dinosaurs to ancient Egypt. The mock Egyptian tomb was very well done and gave you a sense of place in history.

Great museum but can be very crowded

By Rach Dee |

Get there early and go to the Egyptian (main level) and the Dinosaur (upper level) section right away as these areas easily becomes crowded on a free day. You can bring food and water, there are tables and chairs on the ground level.

Trip Advisor/Viator stole our money.

By Anthony K |

We bought tickets for a Saturday and the museum was unexpectedly closed. They are refusing to refund us the tickets so we wasted $60.

Great Museum for those Rainy Chicago Days

By Elias |

We had a great time strolling through the Field Museum. It’s conveniently located in Chicago’s Museum Campus and provides a perfect shelter during those rainy days. We thoroughly enjoyed the various animals (especially the bird section is incredible), as well as the dinosaur exhibit. Sue the T. rex is – of course – a major highlight, but the collection has many other beautiful fossils on display.

We also visited a couple of temporary exhibits, which were both educational and interactive, adding more value to our visit. The museum provides an on-site restaurant which offers a nice spot to pause with a drink or snack.

All in all, definitely recommended activity when you’re visiting Chicago!

By Steve K |

Who doesn’t love dinosaurs!
Really the layout is so good. You walk through the timeline and the graphics make it very easy to learn and understand where on the journey you are. (As far as the dinosaurs go)
The rest of the experiences are just as fun. Incredible displays and the presentation of all the animals make it really fun to walk through.
This one is a must when in Chicago!

the summer of 1988

By Marinda_12 |

Ten people in a van in July for two weeks from Kansas City, Missouri USA to the northern half of the East Coast. In Chicago, we went to Soldier Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, and the Museum of Science and Natural History. The latter is right across the street from Lake Michigan, and it was a hot day, but when we went inside, I completely forgot about the Lake. <3
If you're not from there, I don't recommend that you try to drive: navigating the Gold Coast area, around the Lake, is Cray-Cray!! I was so glad to not be the one driving.

What a collection

By Laurence P |

Wow - what a colelction. The exhibits seemed never ending. Make sure you allow enough time to see everything.
Food is very expensive here, so take a snack with you if you can (wish we did). $120 for a small lunch / 4.

Excellent

By L H |

Death: Life‘s Greatest Mystery is one of the best shows they’ve had here in a long time. SO well curated, even to the inclusion of little spots for quiet respite/reflection. The impermanence of existence is explored in so many different ways, from so many different viewpoints; the introductory montage of images alone is profound. Really, really excellent work.

By Travel8WW |

Best field museum for all ages. Very educational experiences. Walked around the museum from 9am to 4:30 PM absorbing learning thousands of displayed items.

By Altdebbie |

This was so worth it! I went with my son, who thought it was so cool that we got to go into the museum before anyone else. We were the only people in the dinosaur exhibit! Max took us around, and was so knowledgeable. We learned a ton. Great experience!

World class collection reckoning with its complicated history

By Nikki D |

The Field Museum’s collection is unparalleled and presented in creative, engaging, and, most remarkably, ethical and honest ways. Without tokenizing or pandering, the curators have responded to both legal challenges and social criticism from various stakeholders, particularly indigenous tribes and activists whose ancestors’ belongings—and sometimes remains—and spiritual and cultural heritage have been displayed alongside nonhuman animals. Other Māori sacred home and the indigenous peoples new collection were highlights, as are the dinosaur fossil collections, especially Sue the Tyrannosaurus rex.

Had an excellent time at the Museum!

By Shayla P |

We had an excellent time! The view was spectacular!! We took plenty of plenty pictures! I took my youngest son and my BFF brought her son and we had a Sonday Funday.

Lovely

By DROU812LOULOU |

The Field Museum never gets old. The underground experience and Sue are definite musts. The Field coupled with The Shedd makes for a perfect day.

By Kylie S |

My friend and I came here specifically to see the ancient Egyptian exhibit and the science exhibit. We were truly blown away by the ancient Egyptian exhibit, but my friend was a bit disappointed in the science center wing because it was so small. We expected a bit more in that area given what we saw online, but it was still interesting to see! We particularly enjoyed getting to look into all of the labs to see what people were working on, like a CT scan on a mummy. There’s a lot to do and see, however, most of the objects in the Pacific Islander wing were blacked out. There were signs all over explaining why, which we appreciated, but it was still a bit of a bummer. However, we can’t fault the museum for doing the right thing. I really appreciated seeing a letter that a guest posted in that wing a few years back talking about some of the offensive language used. The museum could have taken it down, but instead they kept the letter up all these years, with their own response posted next to it. All in all, I would love to go back here if I ever find myself in Chicago again.

Despite it's reputation, you can skip.

By AC |

Incredibly underwhelming. Please have a specific intention to see something you already know about, or you may be disappointed.

In my honest opinion, as someone who has been to many great museums across the USA and Canada, you can skip this one. Yes, it's on most people's 'bucket' list for notable museums to say you've been there. Still, outside of their newer 'changing' exhibits, which they update regularly, their permanent wings are outdated in both design and information. Most of the plaques we read mentioned they were from the 90s and were yellowed and aged accordingly. I would recommend the Chicago Institute of Art before the Field, especially for the price of admission. They are charging far too much for the poorly updated experience.

I wish I had more time

By gazzamuppet |

Was only in downtime Chicago for a couple of days.
Had a visit here for a few hours but wished I'd had much more time as there is plenty to see.
Would like to revisit.

By Nat |

Absolutely impressive! Make sure to select what you want to see because (at least in our case) one day was not enough for us to see the whole museum.

The Egyptian and the Polynesian exhibitions are particularly great in terms of museography and of the items they hold. It feels a bit wrong that they are so far from the countries they belong to, but at least they are well preserved and can be appreciated by the visitors.

It is more of a mix between a natural history museum and an ethnographic museum, because it has areas dedicated to cultures from around the world.

We also visited the temporary exhibition on Cats and Felines. It was good overall though I think it should make more emphasis on important topics like environmental issues and conservation efforts, instead of making the conclusion about “sharing funny pictures of your pets”. Makes it seem childish and unimportant —which it’s not.

The lockers have an additional charge, but at least they are affordable and easy to use. They should be included within the fare in my opinion, because (at least in winter) they are a necessity, not a luxury.

The restrooms are clean and the staff is kind. The shop has interesting items but is ridiculously overpriced, so don’t even bother.

In conclusion, this museums makes for a whole day visit, and is really worth it.

Stunning

By Dream28858839362 |

Magnificent museum, both the building and its contents. Collection much larger than I imagined, I had read to allow 3 hours of visit and it takes much more. We have only made it just over half with this deadline.

By Ellen B |

We came here and went through the history of the plant exhibit. It was really interesting and we loved learning about Sue the T-Rex. The exhibit also talked about the formation of the planet, each of the extinction periods and has a lot of great information. The museum has a variety of exhibits and is located in an area with several other museums, making it easy to visit a couple on the same day. I would recommend visiting if you are in Chicago.

We love this place

By Pilar and mark K |

It never gets old. As a retired couple we have toured many a natural history museum and this is up with the best. Nice to see families with young kids (get them interested before they are taken over by their electronics). You could easily spend all day here.

Fun place to learn!

By boymomdfw |

We had a lot of fun seeing the special exhibits about dinosaurs, bugs and mummies. It's worth it to get that ticket. We learned some new information!

Dozing with Dinos

By Jnkol*99 |

Went with my daughters Girl Scout troop to a Dozing with Dino’s overnight event offered at the Field Museum. What an amazing experience for the girls to have basically free reign of the museum and even spend the night! Love the museum offers this experience!

I was expecting more.

By Fer L |

Terrible experience. The museum is a bit expensive for what is offered. It’s old and it lacks maintenance. I would definitely recommend museums in Chicago other than this one.

By Jeremy F |

Definitely 5 out of 5 came for our engagement and it was perfect! Would recommend for a weekend trip with the family as well staff was friendly and building was very clean

Sue is amazing!!!!

By kates5283 |

Holy Cow!!! This place was better than I remembered it! I came here in 8th grade on a multi day field trip and remembered it well, or, at least I thought I did. Obviously, I didn't and probably goofed off too much that day. But coming here as an adult with my son, who adores dinosaurs, was just amazing. We came on a long weekend trip to Chicago with the purpose of seeing Sue. He was so excited he teared up with happy tears! He has read all about Sue and seeing him/her in person was just so exciting for him. The rest of the museum is amazing as well! I remembered the Tsavo lions from when I was a kid and went to see those again. We didn't get to all the exhibits as we ran out of time. However, now that there is a spinosaurus there, we are just going to have to go back! Cannot wait!

By Watzmannsfeuerwerk |

A fairly large museum with many different themes. Overall, a lot was done for children. For us adults, it was rather annoying to be constantly bothered by running and screaming children. Unfortunately, it is not possible to walk through this museum in peace.
The exhibitions are sometimes confusingly designed. There is no clear path through the museum. Overall, the exhibitions are rather dated.
A great activity for children for families, but unfortunately not particularly recommended for adults.

Strong Recommendation, even for non-museumgoers!!

By Erna |

A gigantic museum and you definitely have to plan for it all day! We had booked basic tickets, i.e. not everywhere access, but to everything important! Nevertheless, we only made it in almost five hours by rushing everywhere (because we had another appointment).
Here they put together a lot of great, different exhibitions.
You can't be lame as a foot, as I said, the museum is big, so very spacious.
I strongly recommend to be there at 9 am for opening and to go first purposefully, it is wonderful there without being able to be many people!!
There are great bistros, a large museum shop and many toilets.
The building itself is worth seeing, both outside and inside.
The only shortcoming is the age of the carpets, sometimes it smells a bit musty. Visually they are clean. everywhere it is clean!

Day tour

By Randall |

Went here as we had city pass. It was pretty neat seeing everything this museum had. I remember the t rex and I love how the museum is near the lake. Great for kids. To me it’s a one and done.

Awesome place

By Nikki W |

This is an awesome place to spend the day! It's like part natural history museum, part science museum. I spent close to 5 hours here and didn't even see all of the regular exhibits or any of the special exhibits. Definitely worth the visit.

By Siddharth |

Fabulous experience. Could have easily spent twice the time. So many wonderful exhibits! Sue the tyrano was one of many highlights. The pioneering work done in preservation is also amazing!

Early Access to the Field Museum: Worth Every Penny

By Fat Camp |

Our trip to Chicago wouldn’t have been complete without a visit to the iconic Field Museum, and the Early Access Tour made the experience truly unforgettable. As a fan of natural history—and a total dinosaur nerd—this museum was a must-visit, but the early access tickets elevated it to another level.

Booking through TripAdvisor for $73 a person (worth every penny!), we were able to enter the museum an hour before it opened to the general public. This meant we had the museum almost entirely to ourselves—a rare, peaceful way to explore such a grand space. Our guide greeted us promptly at the East Entrance and customized the tour based on our interests, which for me, of course, meant dinosaurs and the Evolving Planet exhibit.

The Evolving Planet exhibit is massive, taking you through 4.5 billion years of Earth’s history, from early microbial life to human evolution. Our guide walked us through the highlights, sharing fascinating insights about key evolutionary periods, such as the Cambrian Explosion. A personal favorite? The Tully Monster, Illinois’ state fossil! It was such a quirky tidbit that made me appreciate how connected the state is to prehistoric life.

But the crown jewel of the tour—and a personal highlight—was standing in front of Sue the T. Rex without a single crowd around. The chance to take in Sue’s immense size and power in an intimate setting was awe-inspiring. Our guide shared fascinating details about Sue’s discovery and how she made her way to the museum, which made this experience feel even more special.

After our guided tour ended at 9 AM, we were free to explore the museum on our own with our all-access tickets. We hit some of the must-see exhibits, like Inside Ancient Egypt (complete with mummies and tombs) and the stunning Hall of Gems. We even checked out the fun, interactive Underground Adventure, where you "shrink" down to the size of a bug—a quirky and unexpected twist.

The early access option gave us the luxury of exploring the museum in peace, and I cannot recommend it enough. If you're a museum lover, this is the way to go.

Pro Tip: Grab breakfast beforehand to avoid feeling rushed—we stopped at Little Branch Cafe, which was decent, but the slow service almost made us late!

Overall, the Early Access Tour was a fantastic way to see the Field Museum in all its glory without the usual crowds. If you're planning a trip to Chicago and love natural history, do yourself a favor and book this experience.

So engaging for kiddos... and me!

By Kirsi |

I had been to Smithsonian about 6 months ago. I much prefer this museum. No crowds (we went on Monday v a day off). This also costs so less people.

The volunteer teens docents just made the trip. They approached the kids with engaging activities that added to the fascination of the museum. Super thoughtful and engaging.

The exhibits were fabulous. My preschooler was spouting out info. My early grade schooler picked up so much info. She was telling me about a ton of things I missed! Middle schooler loved it. So did I!!

So much fun
Even the elevator was beautiful!

Has waterbottle refilled.

Could have spent all day there.

Best one

By Darsh J |

It is one the best museums in Chicago. The Egyptian exhibits were the best, giving a glimpse into Egyptian history. Another remarkable place is where the dinosaur fossils are displayed. The crowd levels were moderate, manageble. Staff was good. We visited the museum for about 2 hours. The atmosphere was of excitement. It is the best for history, and fossil lovers, though others will like it too. I strongly suggest you visit this museum

MLK Day

My 9yr old daughter and I had visited the Field Museum with my 2 toddler grand boys (1 &4 yrs old). MLK Day was free admission so their were lots of families with their children visiting. Surprisingly lines to enter and exit weren't long wait times although using the elevator with the stroller was a challenge. We enjoy the exhibits every January! There's a different learning experience and so much to explore. This my favorite Museum and we'll continue to visit every January.

Day Date to the Field Museum

By Jillian M |

My husband and I enjoyed our day date to the Field Museum while visiting Chicago. We spent several hours exploring all of the exhibits and could have stayed even longer! Our favorite was Sue the T-Rex / dinosaur exhibits. We also really enjoyed the biomechanics section - fascinating for all ages! The staff were all happy to answer questions and help with way finding around the sprawling museum. We were also pleasantly surprised with several performances by local children’s orchestras.

Amazing but Crowded

By PJA070413 |

This is a magnificent museum, a true national treasure. Seems like there is too much to really absorb in one day, so pick what you really want to see, or perhaps you can go back more than once during your visit, or save some sections for the next time you are in Chicago. Our favorite exhibit is Sue the T-Rex, which was amazing. The Ancient Egypt exhibits are also very interesting. The museum is very popular and can get crowded, making it harder to pause over exhibits. And you may have to walk through winding corridors for some exhibits in order to easily exit them. So if you don't like crowds, consider visiting during what might be slower days -- such as mid-week in fall or winter. Also, if you have any health concerns with being in close quarters, consider bringing a face mask because you may be shoulder-to-shoulder with many people in some areas. The Field Museum is easy to reach on the Chicago electric commuter rail, which has a stop about a 10 minute walk away. The Shedd Aquarium is adjacent to the museum. The campus is also a short ride-share or taxi from downtown hotels, and there are many rides waiting outside the entrance when your visit is concluded. There is a good cafe on the first floor of the Field Museum. Suggest you get tickets online in advance.

Be a kid again!

I remember coming here as a kid, and it was still just as fascinating! Sue the TRex is here! Really great way to spend an hour or two

Awful Treatment at the Field Museum

By Colleen C |

My husband and I purchased the all access pass and were having a wonderful morning at the museum. He had some emails to answer and we agreed that I would look at a few exhibits and we would meet up later. I got a call from him - he urgently needed to find me because he had been approached by a young, female security guard who wanted to see his ticket. I had asked at the entrance if we needed proof of paying since we paid online and the staff member said, “Nope, you’re good to go!” My husband told her we paid online and that I had the email confirmation on my phone. She escorted him all around the museum as he attempted to locate me on the Find Me app. She was threatening to have him “ removed” if he could not prove he had a ticket! When he finally found me, the guard was yelling at me! I asked her if I could please explain and she said, No, I am a security guard and only I will talk.” I found her manager and gave her a piece of my mind and we immediately left.

Amazing dinosaur exhibit! (even is you are not interested in dinosaurs)

By TripFan045 |

The Field museum is really impressive. In particular the dinosaur section is unbelievable. We had heard of "Sue" the T-rex that is there, but there is so much more. Our group didn't have anyone that I would consider really even remotely into dinosaurs and we were all blown away. It is a super impressive collection of fossils and the exhibit is huge!

By Ashley P |

Lots to see. strollers available for rent, which you might need if you have littles whose feet get tired. Snacks available throughout. All in all - a worth while stop.

By AlexanderD |

This is a solid museum but it didn’t blown us away. It was kind of hard to find stuff but it is a pretty structure in which it is housed.

Fun with kids

By stacybuckeye |

The favorites of our trip were the pyramid, with original stone and a real mummy, and the dinosaur exhibit with Sue the T Rex as the finale. We would have liked a 3D movie too but after we walked all the way over there they told us t hey weren't running that day so ask when you check in.

Discover SUE …the most compete T-Rex in the World

By TC6217 |

What a museum! Went for SUE but left with a new appreciation for so many amazing exhibits and a walk through time! A great museum that covers so many eras of the universe and exploring Earth!

The dinosaur exhibit is fascinating and the museum has the largest and most complete T-Rex statue ever discovered

Science Comes Alive in a Wheelchair Accessible Setting

Beautiful and historic Chicago building that has been skillfully retrofitted for wheelchair accessibility. Multiple bathroom configurations available depending on your personal needs.

Educational and fun exhibits, including their ticked experiences.

very good museum

By Robert Camper |

Our family was planning a trip to Chicago and this was part of the "City Pass." Looked fun, we love museums, so decided to add it to our itinerary. It was a very good museum, almost too much "stuff." Whatever your interest, there could be a whole display of whatever that interest is. It was a bit too "static" for my 16 year old son. He enjoyed it, but I think at times was a bit like "how many skeletons can we see?" But there were a lot of interesting displays. When we visited there were large sections covered in brown paper due to something with indigenous people. While I get that, and respect that, seems like they could have taken those items out of the displays for the time being, and closed off a room or something (or displayed something else in their place).

I was a tiny bit disappointed as this museum could have been anywhere in the country. I guess I should have expected that, but didn't see much that was directly "Illinois" related. It is still a very good museum, and will probably be on our "to do again" list if we return to Chicago someday.

Big!

By newjerseyfamily |

The museum is in a building that truly is a gem. They just don't make them like this anymore and it's lovely to see. However, you can easily get separated and lost from your group as the exhibits wind around. Thank heavens for cell phones! Honestly I found it a bit dated. I just think history can be better described with a mix of exhibits. There are a lot of taxidermy animals. We did find the Native American exhibit to be very interesting, though apparently there is some issue with what can be displayed so a fair portion is covered up. Overall, a nice day. Wear comfortable shoes.

By Lamar G |

The Field Museum has so many things to look at and read about. We were there for three hours and still didn’t finish seeing everything. Definitely put this on your list of things to do if you ever visit Chicago.

Go early. Stay late. Many interesting, kid-friendly exhibits.

By Resort597096 |

I visited the Field Museum with my 10-year-old grandson. We loved it! Evolving Earth and Sue are fantastic along with many other exhibits. Highly recommend for curious young people. The food in the dining area was quite good also.

A very good museum with many fascinating exhibits

By Upstate Traveler |

We visited from out of town and found this to be an very good museum. The one drawback is a high entrance fee. We were taken with the dinosaur skeletons, the gem exhibits. There are many other good exhibits to be viewed as well. Plan to take your time and several hours to visit.

Amazing Collections were Very Fascinating!

By Debra Rogers |

Wonderful Natural History Museum! We were excited to see the brontosaurus skeleton that is the largest dinosaur (nearly) complete skeleton. The dinosaur skeletons were amazing. There were displays explaining the various periods and how organisms developed. I learned more about DNA. The information was accessible for anyone who can read. There were also many good supporting illustrations. We toured through the mammal, and bird taxidermy and could hardly believe how many species were on display. The displays were wonderful and well captioned. There was so much information to absorb. I learned a lot!

A 47-year-old child finally gets her dream

By Cathy A |

It was absolutely amazing. I'm 47 always wanted to go and see dinosaurs and I finally got to do it!! I can't wait to do it again!

Outstanding

By 462lenaz |

Truly, outstanding museum! I brought my five-year-old and we spent over three hours and I’m not even sure that we saw everything. So much to see and learn. I can’t say enough great things about this place.

Wonderful museum, large exhibits and the home of Sue!

By stzi |

What an amazing museum. And it's HUGE! There is a lot of information. A place we could visit again and again and learn something new each time. We used our CityPass for entrance. It was great.

Tsavo lions

By Heather |

I went specifically to see the Tsavo lions and the Africa exhibit was closed, and on the map it looks like that's where the lions are. The good news is the Tsavo lions are on display in the back of the mammals exhibit. There are many other exhibits to see, but the lions are maybe the most interesting.

Early access - 5 stars, no notes!

By Paulette T |

We booked the early access tour and it was incredible! For the first hour, it was just my husband and I and our guide, Dimitri. The exhibits were amazing (one word - dinosaurs) and Dimitri was very knowledgable and lots of fun. He made our visit one of the best things we did in Chicago. Cannot recommend this enough!

Gets better and better

By OldWulf |

Started on the lower level and was actually considering leaving, nothing of interest and being asked for more money to see exhibits, not a good start. Middle floor was better so joined a tour group as it was free . Good move because it just got better and better. The top floor alone is worth the entry fees, the history of the planet is shown in incredible detail and you get to see exhibits from all over the world, including a dinosaur named Sue. Four hours seems a long time to spend in a museum but you could easily spend all day and not see everything.

By Andrea G |

Reserve at least a period (morning or afternoon) to do the museum calmly because it is quite large and very interesting. Prehistory , plants, ancient Egypt , meteorites and etc make up the collection to be visited

By edkist |

Visited the museum in early May of 2023 and enjoyed my time immensely. We only had about three hours to spend here, but we could have stayed all day if our schedule allowed it. (Note that I’m only referring to the “base” exhibits and not even including any of the temporary/special exhibits!) The tickets for out-of-state visitors seemed a little pricey but worth it , and to be honest, this museum definitely rivals the free Smithsonian museums in DC!

By Leslie B |

I visited the Field Museum solo, and had an amazing time. I wish I had more time, but next time I will plan ahead. There is truly something to intrigue everyone at the Field Museum. I honestly had no idea it had as many exhibits as it did! Extremely fun museum to visit!!

By Kate H |

This was so cool! Our 11 and 8 year old easily spent 5 hours here today. Sue was of course the highlight, but they also happily enjoyed all of the other exhibits.

Another Great Chicago Museum

By BellaGirl2011 |

Have visited twice before when in town. Many interesting displays, with lots of information about each. Plan several hours as there’s much to see and enjoy.

By Geri |

Exciting exhibits, interactive and informative! Visited with my 17 year old daughter. She was curious and excited to explore all the exhibits. Will definitely be back. We could not see everything in one day.

Great

By Ro Santolaya |

It was a great experience . Is great for kids. The staff was so helpful and friendly. The place was so clean and has a lot of exhibitions with a great explanations

Great time out with the family

By Mike and Wendy |

Given the Chicago morning rush, we nearly missed our tour, arriving just in time. Our group was 5 of us and a mother / daughter team. Our tour guide was Benjamin he did a fabulous job guiding us to all the key dinosaurs. He helped us distinguish between real fossils and casts.

Highlight of our trip

By C&BM |

Taking the time to go to the museum was the highlight of our trip. Seeing Sue the T-Rex even better. So much to see here. Highly recommend getting a CityPass for entrance.

Poor treatment of loyal members

By Catherine K |

No doubt this is a world class museum. My mother and I have had a lifetime membership since there was a membership drive years ago when the museum was in dire financial distress. We continued the membership for years, brought friends and family who purchased memberships after visiting. I called the museum when my mother passed and had the account changed to my name only. I received my Life Member card valid thru 12-31-2026. I’ve used this card and the one that was issued in my name before several times. When I sent an email to update my email address, I was told my card was no longer valid because the people that issued it were no longer there and though “he understands my frustration “ it is now inactive. This is a Life Membership IN MY NAME and the person I talked to to dispute this , I believe, was the same one I notified of my mother’s death and the needed name change. I understand that financial circumstances change and that the policy of a Life Membership may need to be updated, but to do it in the middle of a membership is classless, shameful and reeks of poor policy toward loyal members, SHAMEFUL

By Miklesp |

My kids are 6 and 9 and not big fans of Museums…
This time it was amazing! We spent 3 hours (and were not able to do all!) and they were stunned about all they saw!
The Dino part with a path with all the explanation by times is just amazing, fossiles are incredible, the short videos are really kids oriented, and of course SUE! It is the first time I really realized that Dino really exist 🤣
Less: the underground experience was not Wouaw
So do not hesitate it is worth the price!

By Sarah L |

Very good learning experience. Good for all ages. Alot of walking wear good shoes. There are alot of animal exhibits and dinosaur bone structures.

Nice but a little tired

By Jeremy C |

Overall, well worth a visit if you haven't been before, but not sure I would return unless they had an interesting special exhibit.

Sue Is My New Favorite Dinosaur!

By Kat |

The exhibits were all great, plenty of information. My favorites were Inside Ancient Egypt and Sue the T-Rex. I am officially a big fan of Sue, like so many others, and really loved learning all we know about her.
Why I gave this three stars was due to my staff experiences. Upon checking in the lady who issued our tickets had a bad attitude about my needing her to speak up. The facility is loud and she used a small voice that made it extremely difficult to hear. I told her we needed two tickets and she ended up charging me for two adults instead of one child and one adult. I did not know the prices going in and I took her word on the price. It makes the world of difference when customer service tries just a little harder than the effort she gave.

Incredible gem and fossil collections

By Patricia M |

The dinosaur fossil and skeleton exhibits were incredible and the gem exhibits were fascinating. Our docent-led tour was extremely informative and gave us an overview of the entire museum.

By mt10climber |

Very disappointed in the kings exhibit. Expected an actual history of monarchies. Also the whole place smells like mothballs- perhaps piping in some better smells would be nice.

By Nicole S |

The museum was nice and clean and friendly.
The cafe was not a great experience. It was not well organized to get your food, they told us food we were ordering they could not do as advertised but were rude about it and not explaining well. When you have a bunch of kiddos you are trying to feed it makes it an unpleasant experience especially when your coaching your kids to be good sports about it and your not being treated that way from other adults. Otherwise we can be understanding and go with the flow of things happen.

Amazing Museum — Perfect Half-Day Stop!

By Saverseats |

The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago was awesome — so much to see that you can easily spend a few hours there without getting bored. The dinosaur exhibits are jaw-dropping (hello, Sue, and the cultural displays are thoughtful and beautifully presented.

The layout is easy to navigate and there’s just enough variety to keep kids and adults happy. We grabbed a quick snack at the café and kept exploring — the ocean and ancient Egypt sections were personal favorites.

It’s a must-visit if you’re into science, history, or just looking for a fun, educational way to spend part of your day in Chicago. Would totally recommend

By MSue |

We walked to the museum from our hotel and had trouble finding an open entrance. I imagine this was due to lower crowds in the winter, but some signage would have been helpful! The museum is massive, an easy way to spend a cold, snowy afternoon. We did get bored with exhibit after exhibit of taxidermy. While the Field Museum was definitely worth visiting, it's a one and done for us.

Amazing

By Jane N |

You could easily spend a week here....so much to see. Enjoyed the Underground discovery and also a nice lunch at the Bistro.

So glad we made time for this

By ms8wotw |

My 15 yr old daughter and I enjoyed a few hours at this museum while in Chicago. What a beautiful building and the exhibits were well done. Loved seeing 'Sue' and also the gem exhibits!

By CanadianShan |

We had a great visit at the field museum. Staff were all very friendly and helpful. The exhibits are beautiful and unique.

By Paul K |

Brought a 12-year-old on his first visit to Chicago. The Field Museum turned out to be his favorite thing to see! Little did I know he had not outgrown his fascination for dinosaurs, so we were both overwhelmed with the spectacle that the Field Museum offered us. We could have spent the whole day here; our next visit, we just might!

By boomersooner75 |

Took 21,19,16,14 yr olds and everyone loved it. We were there 7 hours and could have stayed 2 more. Do not pass this up.
This is a must do for everyone

So much to see

By vacayladyc |

Had a good time exploring here. There are many great exhibits with some additional special paid exhibits/shows. We did not do any paid extras and there was still plenty to keep us busy and interested, always something just around the corner to see. There is a food court and 2 gift shops. HEADS-UP this is not a budget outing as a visitor to the city: if you need ADA or family parking, there is a lot on museum property that’s $30 and is first come and credit card payment only. Admission can get pricey too depending on numbers & ages of your party. Don’t forget food and souvenir shopping. HOWEVER, even with all of that, I still enjoyed the time we spent there and would totally recommend it to others. I will be going back to to see any new exhibits on my next visit to the city.

1st time here, won't be the last

By Timothy |

My wife and I while here in Chicago decided to take a trip to the Field Museum. At the ticket counter, I asked if there was a senior discount and I was told that there was. I was asked if either one of us were veterans and I answered that both of us were. Since we were both veterans, there was no charge for admissions. I thank the young man at the ticket counter, received our tickets and maps and went on our happy little way. What a fantastic experience. The exhibits were just so wonderful. The history in this place was amazing.
After two hours, we went to their snack bar, and we both ordered their Chicken Tenders and Fries. We each received a basket with five large pieces of chicken tenders and a huge order of fries. After filling our faces, we were on our way once again.
From Egypt to the world of the Dino's what a wonderful day.

By David J |

I enjoyed the Sue exhibit, the Tavo Lions, the outside grounds, the splendor of the building, the nice lady at the coffee shop. The volunteers were friendly and helpful.

A day at Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History does not disappoint

By aylwyn y |

The museum visit is a favorite pastime during our occasional vacations to Chicago. The galleries are superbly arranged, offering glimpses of times past, embracing cultures worldwide. The Tyranasaurus exhibit, in my opinion, is unequaled. I especially appreciate receiving a veteran's discount.

By Gigi J |

The many exhibits in the Field Museum were fascinating, very detailed, and educational. The 3D movie on SUE was wonderful!

Lacks the "Wow" I was hoping for

By acadonnelly |

This is a large, pretty good natural history museum. But for me, it kind of lacked a little bit of the "Wow" that I like to see in museums like this. For example, the first place I go for a bit of wow are the gems and minerals. The gems (not really my thing), were OK, and the minerals (which definitely are my thing) were also just OK at best. There weren't really any "Holy cow, look at that" specimens. It was good on an information basis- lots of explanations on types of mineral families, forms, etc.

Fossils are another thing I really like. Some of their fossils are exceptional- the archeopteryx is amazing, and Sue the T Rex has been redone since I was last there and looks great. Many of the other dinosaurs were great too, but not on the level of the Houston Museum of Natural Science (the ultimate natural history museum imho).

Many of the other exhibits were pretty darned good, and the museum does a really good job with explanations of things. I could have spent far more time in the plants section- so much to learn. Honestly I could spend a lot of time in this museum, one full day really wasn't enough.

field museum

By elizabeth v |

Everything was beautiful, there were parts that we could not see, because it is immense, it would be ideal to have the map beforehand and mark the exhibits that most interest to see and make a plan of how to see them. Eating there is super expensive, it is important to keep that in mind if the $ have it right. Unfortunately they don’t have all the informational signs in Spanish, it would be nice to have the google translator app, so they can read the Spanish descriptions to the children.

By Hanni |

It's an extraordinary museum. It has an excellent museography, on very varied subjects... All interesting. Also the museum is Huge!!!

I arrived early (open at 9am), put on comfortable shoes and prepare to walk (enjoy) lots of information, beautiful objects, scientific and cultural elements

Spend a whole day here

By Johna Rogers |

We really enjoyed this museum. There’s a whole lot to see though so definitely start your day here and plan to be there most or all of the day.

Well worth it for me

By Heidi S |

This was absolutely worth the extra $. I was in a wheelchair and being to see exhibits without fighting crowds to get up close was wonderful. My tour guide on July 31 was charming and knowledgeable. The museum was so peaceful and I went through the egyptian tomb all by myself.

By Mauricio S |

Three-story museum.
With dinosaur skeletons and the evolution of humanity.
The interesting part is the huge amount of animals stacked.
From large mammals to small birds. A lot of them.
I watched the 3D movie, paid the part, but I found it pretty funny. Could be included in the ticket. I do not recommend watching.
Long walk time to calmly see all the animals.
I recommend.

Outstanding natural history museum covering many scientific topics

By christopherbO9687MP |

The Field Museum is an outstanding natural history museum covering many scientific topics. Of particular interest was the "gigantisourous" display and associated movies, which outlines how this largest of land animals was found in South America and how its collected bones were used to construct the huge live-sized model in the main hall. Fans of dinosaurs will enjoy this recent addition of the Museum.

Kings Exhibit - Where is the Scholarship?

By Europelover2014 |

I renewed a lapsed membership specifically for the First Kings of Europe Exhibit. What I experienced were stunning artifacts and off-putting commentary.

With explanations aimed at a 4th grade or lower level audience, the simplistic information read as a continual attack on the assumed elitism of "the wealthy and powerful" in the mostly unidentified societies. There was limited supporting context or a comprehensive view of the cultures. I was left with little to no information about either the "rich and powerful" nameless rulers or the lower class "vicitims" of this nameless ruling elite.

I specifically wondered about the claim that the military was the tool of the powerful. What military and what rulers? What years? What battles? What scholarship, what context, what historical timeline?

I wish I had realized that the exhibit's accompanying conference was entitled: Leadership and Inequality in Prehistoric Southeast Europe. As curated here, the exhibit makes the claim, but does little to demonstrate either leadership or inequality.

By Jddme26 |

Our family had a fantastic time at the Field Museum in Chicago! There’s so much to see and explore for all ages. Sue the T. rex was a highlight, and the exhibits on ancient civilizations and Cats Predators to Pets exhibit was fascinating. The museum is well-organized, clean, and easy to navigate, with plenty of interactive displays to keep everyone engaged. The staff were friendly and helpful, making the experience even better. It was a perfect mix of fun and learning—we all left with great memories and can’t wait to visit again!

By 485tabatha |

Some interesting displays, no doubt. Navigating through the museum was not always easy. For a Monday, there were a lot of people and exhibits got crowded quickly. Like others have said, plan for enough time. Wear good sneakers. Pack a lunch (especially if you have diet restrictions), bring small bills for vending machines.

By Irina Cezar |

The museum is great and quite organized. We are not in line at any of the exhibitions and the quality of what is exposed is excellent. The strong point of the visit was to meet Sue, one of the largest T-Rex specimens ever found with the highest value ever paid for a dinosaur fossil in the world.

Great Museum

By Yukasin |

We had a great time at the museum. Saw the Kings of Europe, Death, T-Rex in 3d, and the Underground Adventure. Walked to the museum along the waterfront. They took our picture and sold us some photos, which was fine. One of the best museums in the world. Costs to get in, but quality isn't cheap.

By Samantha F |

I recommend going here in your view to Chicago! The vdd is better in New York but this one is also great, dinosaurs, history, western cultures, activities with children, very father the experience. We recommend to go with time (minimum about 3 hours) to be able to travel well

Excellent- give yourself plenty of time!

By sue s |

Give yourself plenty of time! We allowed ourself 3 hours thinking that would be enough, honestly could have spent the day there. Excellent displays, my 12 yo daughter and I fully enjoyed the experience. I would highly recommend.

Must See!

By Marie S |

This is an amazing museum! There are a variety of exhibits that kept our family engaged for hours. The Field Museum and Sue are a must-see when visiting Chicago.

By Miguel Gómez |

Field Museum was just good. Honestly I expected a little bit more. Is a very big museum, with many things, but some of them were irrelevant for me. The only thing that was really interesting was the earth and dinosaurs section, where is SUE, one of the most complete and best-preserved skeletons of Tyrannosaurus rex, among others types of dinosaurs. Outside of that, was just ok.

Compact but Rich in Content – Fascinating Visit

By CarolusvL |

The Field Museum is smaller than MSI, but equally informative. A good mix of anthropology, archaeology, and natural sciences.

We especially enjoyed the special exhibit on the domestication of cats — really interesting and well presented.

Note: they only accept card payments, and the food court is quite pricey.

By Megan S |

Loved this!! The dinosaurs were our main attraction but the museum is huge & you could stay here for 3+ hours easily. Great experience.

Great museum but staff a "mixed bag"

By Colin S |

A great museum but, my God! what is wrong with some of the people that work there? The apathy oozes out of them. I felt that they really didn't want to be there. However, the resident experts were excellent. Don't get me wrong, this is a very good museum.Unfortunately some of the staff have really let the museum down.

Interesting.

By jose m |

Dinosaurs and very interesting temporary exhibitions, between the one in Egypt, to the rooms with the Dinosaurs and therodactyls looks impressive.

Great Exhibits!

By joyce b |

This is a really cool museum that everyone in the family enjoyed, including my 13 year old daughter and my history buff husband! Well laid out and very informative. Definitely worth a trip!

By FunCouple94 |

We got the early access pass. It included all the exhibits and a 3D movie. Only things we paid for while there was souvenirs and food. With the early access ticket you enter the museum an hour before it opens and get a tour. Our tour guide was excellent. Very knowledgeable. We parked across the street in the parking garage. It's $30 for all day. Easy check in and out. Don't lose your ticket! You pay for parking on the way out at a kiosk then have 15 minutes to exit. We spent about 7 hours in the museum. Great day!

Amazing worth going!

By RUBY S |

The museum is amazing! The Egyptian exhibits were so interesting. All the Animals on display we loved it! It reminds you of night at the museum! Staff was great once inside!

Great experience

By Ray B |

We went here after a horrible experience at the shed aquarium. It was graduation weekend from Navy Boot Camp for my son. He received free admission and I did as well as a retired military. They offered student discounts whereas we paid $254 for six adults and one two year-old at the shed aquarium, it was only $53 for the same group at the field museum.

We ended up running out of time because there was so much to see. We spent three hours and ended up rushing through one exhibit and skipping an entire other one. It held my intention throughout the entire visit.

I found it lacking for its potential

By 356ricke |

Yes, there are some interesting parts. The dinosaur bones are cool. But there are a number of special events costing additional dollars. The core of the museum seems to dated and dusty for the sake of the special shows $$$. It's not bad but I think for time & $ there are better events. If you haven't been to a big natural history museum it's good but if you have there are better things to do in Chicago.

The Jade room was a highlight.

By Freedom66251956270 |

We were in town for the day, had 4 teens with us so didn’t get to see all the exhibits. The museum has amazing collections of so many interesting artifacts, & we especially enjoyed the Jade room. The map was a helpful guide in deciding where to go. Thanks for an entertaining visit.

By celia n |

Huge!!! A great experience, you can spend hours and still see new things, we loved it, totally recommended.

Something for everyone

By Clauremore |

Something for everyone at this museum! Great for all ages. Learn about animals and people from the world’s cultures. Plants and minerals they have that too. Dinosaurs of all types!! Beautiful gems. Interested in what the world is like as an insect underground? The field museum is for you.

Fantastic and beautiful museum!

By John K |

I've wanted to come here for so long and it met all my expectations. The dinosaur exhibit is well worth the trip. We will return.

I should also note how beautiful the actual building is too. Natural sunlight pours into the main hall and adds to the experience.

Awesome museum

By Jeffrey S |

I could spend an entire week in this museum. Soo much to see! Lots of displays dating back for a good hundred years. I will be back again

Can a museum visit be my 40 hour work week? Here it can happen!

By Robyn P |

What a large variety! We enjoyed both the natural science exhibits (who knew there were soooo many birds in the world!) and the human history exhibits (ancient Egypt). We spent three hours here, only had to stop because my teen was done. I could’ve spent all day and returned for a whole week. If you are a museum or science obsessed person, I’m sure you could spend a full work week there.

We didn’t stop in the cafe, so I’m not sure of the prices.

Good place to spend a day.

By Yuriy F |

Interesting exposition. Part of it was closed. We came at 12:30 pm. The museum requires at least one full day to walk around. Nice place for adults and a family.

Extremely impressive

By TravelTalk2 |

Exhibits are very well done. The taxidermy is exceptional, artifacts and displays are fabulous. A very well curated museum.
A must see. I think you’ll need at least four hours for high level tour.

Sue the T-Rex is a must see!

By kates5283 |

If you have a dinosaur lover in your family like we do, this is a must see! Our non-dinosaur loving kiddo enjoyed the other exhibits in the museum, as did we. But the highlight was our self-proclaimed "dino nerd" nine year old almost in tears when he finally got to see Sue the T-rex in person! He was beyond excited. The museum flow is really wonderful here, too. A lot of museums have you somewhat bottlenecked in exhibits, but not this one. I have fond memories of this museum from a school trip in Junior High and I'm glad that my kids also now have fond memories of this museum. With the addition of the spinosaurus, our's 9 year old's favorite dinosaur, we will now how to make another trip to this wonderful museum and we cannot wait!

The Ghost and The Darkness

By acharrison13 |

So much to see … we could have spent more time. Our favorite exhibit was The Lions of Tsavo … The Ghost and The Darkness! Could easily spend 4 hours.

Great exhibit!

By Suze_n_AZ |

Amazing displays. Even our teenage grandson became engrossed in some of the exhibits. Not as crowded as we expected on a Sunday.

Amazing visit

By CrishaFS |

Field Museum is a must visit for both kids and adults. A lot of learning and discovering. First time to see T-Rex (Sue) and other dinosaurs skeletons. Too bad we had to go back to Ohio so we spent only couple hours in the museum. We will definitely go back when we visit Chicago again.

Great staff experience

By M A |

Thank you to Sabrina Johnson at the sales counter of Field Museum! She was so helpful, we had some confusion with our city pass and our library pass but Sabrina was so helpful and nice. She made the initial encounter for my family who was here from out of town memorable.

Overcrowded

By egwanderlust |

First, the positives. The museum campus is beautiful during the summer. The staff we encountered were friendly and willing to help. You could easily spend an entire day exploring the various exhibits. In particular, we enjoyed the Ancient Americas and dinosaur exhibits - especially SUE.

Unfortunately, the negatives greatly outweigh the positives. The Field Museum is massive. Despite the size, it still feels overcrowded, even on a weekday. Many other museums across the country are more organized and less crowded. If the price was lower or if they limited access, it would be more enjoyable. It was tough to enjoy an exhibit when you were being rushed through by the hoards of people behind you.

By Stacy J |

This was a wonderful museum with something for every age group and interest. My 15 teenage boy and 7 year old boy were both engaged all day. NOTE: this is an all day activity and honestly needs more than one day to visit each area. There is a children’s interactive play area in the bottom level that has different hours than the museum so be aware if you are planning that activity for your little ones. Food court was surprisingly good but expensive.

Have you seen Sue?

By Brenda M |

I visited with my adult son and some family friends with little ones ages 5-10. We enjoyed the exhibits we saw and we only saw some of the museum, so would definitely return for more exploring. "Sue" is definitely a highlight.

Don’t miss it

By Trish B |

Allowed ourselves plenty of time to cruise through the many great sections. Liked the variety of historical and archaeological items that kept us very interested.

Great time!

By Natasha E |

We've been 3 times and we love it!
I never knew I loved dinosaurs as much as I do 😊 we'll be back again soon. Make sure to take extra time, so much to see!

Great Museum, TripAdvisor portion harder work than it should have been

By Chris B |

Great Museum, TripAdvisor portion harder work than it should have been. The museum itself was excellent, lots of exhibitions from across the globe covering wildlife, culture and the environment. Some of the exhibits were more leaning to children than adults but that didn't detract too much. Main challenges were getting inas the staff at the entrance seemed to be expecting a qr code and didn't know what to do with a bar code. Also no pre advice from TripAdvisor to say that the museum was closing early for an event on the day I visited.

Great natural history museum!

By Greg G |

We went here with the City Pass and had a great 5 hour experience. The TRex 3D movie was outstanding. This museum is huge and would take days to fully appreciate and explore. Great experience!

Wonderful experience

By BobbyRoss |

Wonderful well worth the price and the guide was absolutely wonderful. Would recommend to anyone with family or friends.

By Ricky M |

This was a fun visit for the family. Lots of animals & history to see about. Lots of dinosaur history that was interesting.

By Mark Jackson |

My wife and I enjoyed the museum very much!! There’s so much to see and do that we couldn’t do everything before our flight, but the dinosaur related exhibits were a must! Seeing Sue the T-Rex was awesome, but there is tons more related to pre dinosaur and what happened after the meteor, leading all the way to present day and humans. Would definitely come back and see again and have the time to see a 3D movie or two if we come back to Chicago!

By Tammy K |

Great experience. Wish my back didn't hurt from all the walking. There's a lot to see. Prices are a little high! Was a great experience.

Meet a T-Rex

By 100Diane100 |

Nice museum. Really went to see Sue the T-Rex. Amazing! Worth the visit. Entire dinosaur section remarkable. Other exhibits interesting too!

Too much to see in one day!!

By Sparklemn |

The teenage boys in our group loved the museum. The adults did, too. We didn’t come close to scratching the surface of what you can see and do. We focused on the special non-permanent collections - Wild Color, Jurassic Oceans, and China - but also saw Sue (of course!!) and the Egyptian mummies. We were there for about 5 hours.

By Kim A |

Museum is very spacious and well laid out. Upon entry, there was a free tour about to start. The tour was an overview of the property and was instrumental in our rating of the museum. I highly recommend a tour or audio tour if you are a first time visitor. There were a lot of optional exhibits for additional fees that we did not see.

Not impressed

By Dream32871298858 |

Poorly lit exhibits in a lot of areas. There are sensors set up to light up a display. Sometimes they worked, sometimes they did not.

Highly Recommend!

By kdh948 |

Absolutely fantastic experience! From 12 years to 78 years we loved our docent and the private tour! We spent another 2 hours in the museum after, overall a ton of fun!

SO MUCH more than "Sue"

By Lizbet S |

While many go to the Field to see "Sue," the largest T-Rex ever found, we recommend its extraordinary halls with 1000's of mammals, birds, and fish. The taxidermy-preserved specimens--most from the 1930s--were posed naturally in realistic settings when the only way most people had to view them was photographs in books. But even though we have access to videos of animals today, seeing them in person at zoos is getting less possible as animals like elephants are less likely to be kept in captivity and other species are going extinct. Taxidermy--what was old is now new--still allows everyone to have the unprecedented ability to see exotic animals from around the world extremely close up. Museum goers can get within a couple of feet of giraffes, elephants, tigers, water buffalo, rhinos, anteaters, etc., etc. and see details without danger or environmental hazards. There are breathtaking and intriguing sights around every corner!

By Andy P |

We loved the field museum and wish we had used it in the city pass instead of the sky deck. It was fun and informative and we saw artefacts from countries we hadn’t seen before. We loved the dinosaur exhibits and the ancient americas. The Egyptian area was closed for a few days but looking forward to going back and seeing it. We were there about 4 hours and saw lots of interesting exhibits and would recommend for all ages

Good first visit

By Gary M |

Huge museum, but a good Birds Eye view. To truly view everything, it would be good to be a member to visit periodically and take in exhibits leisurely.

By Darin M |

The museum was decent, but I had heard really good things and found it average overall. Maybe I am spoiled with other museums in other cities.

SOOOOO much to see besides Sue!

By Carrie H |

So much to see and so much to learn. Sue was the big draw for our grandkids but they were so engaged with so much more. I was amazed at how long they lasted at 5 and 7. Almost 5 hours.

By Michael C |

Disappointing. Trip Advisor and Viator are better than this. I place most of the responsibility on the Field Museum management. Our guide Katie was very good, but was preoccupied with making a mandatory staff meeting that limited our guided portion to less than an hour even though we arrived early. Paid for four tickets but only provided with two tickets to the special exhibit. (Katie was apologetic and was able to get our other two tickets.) The museum is a must see. You don’t need to pay extra for a special guided tour. Get general admission online and go on your own. They have group tours that don’t cost extra. Save your money and treat yourself to deep dish pizza.

Our visit included a tour of the plant exhibit's history. If you are in Chicago, I would suggest going.

By Ug O |

We thoroughly enjoyed learning about Sue the T-Rex, and it was quite fascinating. Along with a wealth of excellent information, the display also covered the planet's creation and each of the extinction eras. It is convenient to visit a couple museums on the same day because of the museum's diverse displays and convenient location near other museums.

So Much to See!

By Brandon |

This is a great museum. It has an amazing display of dinosaurs that also goes through mass extinction events. If you have the citypass, make sure to use all your perks and see the extra exhibits and movie.

Entertained my teen for over 4 hours

By Michelle C |

Any venue or activity that entertains my 13 year old for hours is 5 stars with me! Apparently, I'm the most embarrassing mom in the world, and my son wanted some time to explore the museum independently. I felt comfortable allowing him to go off on his own and check in by text from time to time. He explored every inch of the museum and enjoyed the cultural history exhibits as much as the dinosaur exhibits. (I loved the gems.) I will forgive the overpriced and rather gross cafe pizza and give the Field five stars for an educational and very enjoyable visit.

By Pingram007 |

This museum is iconic! The museum has so much history. the exhibits were amazing. I was awestruck. The information and tour of the museum provides a look into the past.

Plan on spending the whole day!

By Quentin K |

Great experience and could have easily spent the entire day. So many amazing exhibits and the on-site cafeteria made lunchtime easy and enjoyable. Would recommend!

By Gina K |

The dinosaurs did not disappoint. We spent 3 hours at the museum and did not see everything. We spent the most time in the dinosaur exhibits and the Egypt exhibits. The gemstones were beautiful. There was just the right amount of reading and a lot of visual exhibits that would be good for all ages.

Lola side event

By Pearl C |

Amazing! Spent 2.5 hrs without the special exhibit , but that was going fast. Everyone enjoyed at their own pace.

Great museum to spend a few hours or a day

By Ambassador683414 |

The Chicago Field Museum was a super fun way to spend a few hours in the city. Had about 2 hrs to spare on a recent trip and took the train to the museum campus on an off day. Walk from Roosevelt station is about 10-15mins. The campus is huge. I wanted to take a picture of the Haida totem pole outside of one of the entrances of the museum after I visited but couldn’t find my way back and ran out of time. Inside the museum, Chicago’s impressive architecture continues as upon entering you are greeted by the museum’s large marble entry ways. Admission is expensive for out of state visitors but science expeditions and research costs a lot of money so it was ok. At the main hall, since I had limited time, I ran into a free tour guide (he had a sign that said “free tours”) who showed me and a few others around the museum for about an hour while explaining the history and future of the museum. The main draw here is Sue, the T. Rex but Maximo, the titanosaur in the main hall is more impressive. I hope he stays. I also like how the museum names all of its dinosaurs unlike other museums. I particularly enjoyed watching the lab staff inside the DNA labs - as someone who used to work in one, I cannot imagine working in a display case. I did not have time to walk through the hula exhibit or look too closely at the Native American exhibits but will be back.

By TheTravelingBoyMama |

This museum had something for every single person in our family to enjoy. Every employee we encountered was super friendly and helpful. We didn’t get there until 3:00 in the afternoon, and so we expected it to be packed. It was busy, but it was still pleasant to look at the displays due to the large layout of the museum. If you have natural history lovers in your group, then this is a must see.

Fun for all ages

By Daniel |

Incredibly intuitive and fun for all ages. Personally, I'm a history nerd so I loved this even more. My personal favorite would probably be Kings of Europe: that is a must-see.

Great Afternoon at the Field Museum

By Ellen B |

We visited the Field Museum recently with 3 toddlers, 4 parents and 2 grandparents. It was a wonderful experience for all of us! We primarily focused our activities on the dinosaur exhibit and the Nature Walk areas of the museum, as we expected that would be the tolerance of our toddlers!

The dinosaur exhibit was a hit with everyone. We first took our kids to see the "Sue" exhibit when it first opened, which our (now adult) children really enjoyed. This newer exhibit is amazing! It is so well planned and laid out for everyone to understand the evolution of the dinosaurs. My grandson especially enjoyed it, as we walked through I explained some of the exhibits to him. As we were leaving it, he pulled me aside and conversed with me about the dinosaurs and what happened to them, at 3 years old! One very simple yet effective display was a fabric painting of a large size dinosaur approaching you, hanging from the ceiling. As it waved gently from the air currents in the room, it almost appeared to be approaching you. Whoever thought this up was a genius!

We also toured the Nature Walk area, which again was very well laid out and the animals were well displayed. I remember my first visit to the Field (back in 1977) when I visited it to view King Tut. I remember thinking at the time that the King Tut exhibit was fabulous, but that the displays of stuffed animals in boxes in that exhibit area were dusty and sad looking.) The Nature Walk exhibit has been completely revamped, is very well done and informative. I really enjoyed viewing it, as did the littles in our group.

I also want to mention that the snack bar had ample offerings for the littles in our group, especially the French Fries! I look forward to a return exhibit.

Have a great Field day

By doctor869 |

Very inclusive information covering a tremendous number of artifacts. Favorites were ancient peoples, northwest and artic peoples, and the dinosaurs. Actually went back a second day to see more and still did not see it all. Fascinating!

By Laura M |

I was the only person on this tour! The guide, Dimitri, and I had the entire museum to ourselves! I can’t begin to describe how awesome and special this was. Dimitri was very knowledgeable and kind. He did an outstanding job of describing everything we saw. He asked me what my interests were and we focused on what I wanted to see most. I didn’t want this tour to end! I’d go again tomorrow. Worth every penny.

✌️

By faisal k |

Excellent experience! Kids enjoyed a lot! Dinosaurs, Egypt theme and Botany was awesomeness and bodacity!!!!!!!!!!

It was OK

By Otter2269 |

Big museum. There are lots of exhibits to choose from, however, a basic pass won't get you into all of them. It gets very spendy if you want to go to some of the premium exhibits. It was unfortunate that some of the exhibits we really wanted to see were for premium tickets only. We only had a couple hours so we didn't want to pay the upcharge to see only the premium exhibits. The gift shop is an absolute travesty for such a large museum. The items are extremely overpriced. I found the exact same item my son wanted on Amazon for around $4, when it was priced at $14.99 at the museum. Just really ridiculous. They need to realize they don't fool most people with these garbage prices.

Could Spend All Day

By rebelee |

I loved this museum. You could easily spend the better part of a day here. We went as part of the City Pass, which included a 3D Movie of your choice.

T-Rex and a lot of other different things to see and explore!

By Chrissi B |

We went to the The Field Museum, located on Chicago's Museum Campus. Close to the Lake Michigan you have a good photo spot to take some breathtaking pictures from Chicago's skyline before proceeding into the museum. Close to the entrance you can rent lockers to store your backpacks during your stay (the bigger ones are more expensive). Don't forget to take a map of the museum with you (QR-Code or printversion) - this is quite helpful on your way through the museum.
We went there for 2 hours and had only a change to see a glimpse of some of the exhibitions, the famous skeleton of the T-Rex was the highlight (for us). If you want to explore more, plan more time. We went there via the "Hop on - Hop off - Bus" Tour, there is a stop right in front of the building. This museum was also part of our "Go Tour Chicago Explorer City Pass" - with with you can visit a lot of sights at significantly more favorable conditions than without.

Excellent museum

By Bunty8 |

Was planning on spending couple of hours here and ended up leaving almost 7 hours later.
Didn’t realise how long we had been in until I started feeling hungry, had lunch which was very good and reasonably priced at cafe, before continuing.
There is so much to see, dinosaur exhibit was a particular favourite. Several special exhibits, Death, Life’s Greatest Mystery was thought provoking, First Kings of Europe, could go on and on, best to experience it for yourself.

World-Class

By Howard B |

One of the world's top museums, the Field Museum is an old-school natural history museum with huge amounts of stuffed animals and bones. What makes them a step above is the vast size of the collections. Not much more to say other than if you are interested in natural history the Field is a must-see.

By DavidGatzka |

Museum is a little old. Don't book an overpriced 3D movie! 23 min for $11 on a much too small screen - unless you have the Chicago City Pass, there's that. I also find the tickets cheeky, for foreigners the most expensive! 30$. Now for the positive... Bring a lot of time, you can look at a lot here.
Impressive the dinosaurs, the Egyptians in the basement and much more as well as the temporary exhibitions, these of course cost extra 🤨

By Jimena M |

Very interesting. See the replica of the largest Dino found in Argentina! Very big. Fun to go with kids. Impossible to see everything. Recommended!

By Christy W |

I was worried our three year old would be bored but he loved wandering through exhibits, especially the just of animals and dinosaurs. He enjoyed it so much he cried the next day when we walked by it to go somewhere else because he wanted to go back! There are plenty of spaces to sit outside exhibits or in the basement vending machine area and you can bring snacks as long as you eat in designated locations.

By Johnny-Boricua |

The parking lot was small & $30. Admission was $30. It’s a pricey outing but worth it if you spend a few hours. The place is across from Soldier Field, so I would not recommend going during a Bears game.
You enter into the main courtyard, which has a big dinosaur skeleton, pterodactyls, hanging from the ceiling, totem poles, and some other big things. The exhibits have guides of what you will see. I found the history of American culture and peoples very detailed & informative, going back to the first settlers to meso American societies to Aztec/Mayan, to modern day nations like eskimos. The dinosaur exhibit was great with lots on skeletons & renditions. They had all the usual Dino All-stars, including TRex, who had his own room. Then there was prehistoric man skeletons, fossils, renditions, etc. I thought the Neanderthal model looked a lot like me but I digress. The evolution of life exhibit was detailed and educating. There was a mineral & gem exhibit. There was an Ancient Egypt exhibit. There were some animals scattered around but not in an exhibit.
I love history so the 4-5 hours flew by. It's great for school trips, families, and history buffs like me. The museum is right on the shore of Lake Michigan, so you can hang out after the museum and watch the Chicago skyline from the shore leading to the Adler Planetarium. I highly recommend this Chicago attraction.

By Kerry M |

We covered about one third of this museum in about the same time that we did all of the Griffin (science and industry) the day before. Exhibits are very well done, organized, informative, and fluid. Amazing number of authentic fossils and specimens, not just the replicas in so many other collections. Great way to spend a day, just don't expect to see it all!

Love some Sue.

By bargin gal |

We enjoyed the museum, spent an entire day there. We started on the ground floor and slowly moved our way up. There must have been 20 school classes at the museum, but there is enough room for everyone. We enjoyed the live music as well. Sue was spectacular, we saved her for the very end and had her all to ourselves.

By lucianacordoba |

Very complete museum. We visited it with the attraction of city pass and it went very well, it had included many of the museum rooms and a 3d movie.
It is large, so you have to go with time and eager to walk.

Beautiful Museum

By mary f |

If you love natural history and artifacts, this museum is high quality. There was so much more to see than my afternoon allowed. One of my favorite sections was the plants. I am a gardener and saw usual and unusual plants. I enjoyed the bird section and the gems. There were incredible displays of jewelry. There were excellent dinosaur areas if you are into that. I purchased the tickets on TripAdvisor, which were reasonable and got me through the line a little quicker without having to print tickets. One note: the lavatories had very poor ventilation and reeked of sewage. To get there, I was able to take the bus from my hotel on magnificent mile #146 for $2.50. I do recommend seeing this museum if traveling to the area.

Too Crowded, Too Crowded, Too Crowded

By Barbara N |

We had traveled from Atlanta Georgia to visit The Field Museum. We did not know that Monday February 20 was a free day at the Museum and therefore we were almost trampled any number of times by families, strollers, children.....adults too! There should have been a better way of controlling the number of people who entered the Musuem that day. It really took away from the experience. We really felt like we were being pushed through the exhibits by the crowds. We did not get in for "free"! We paid for our admission....

Long Weekend in Chicago

By DianaL6232012 |

We spent a lot more time at this museum than we planned, but it was great! We went early on a Monday and pretty much had the museum to ourselves! We explored all over. We really loved the African Fashion (although I believe this isn't a permanent exhibit). My son loved talking to the Maximo the Titanosaur and my daughter loved the Sue the T. Rex.

Great experience even for a 5 year old.

By chey |

I didn’t know what to expect with the museum, but there was so much to see there. My 5 year old loved all of it. Sue the T. rex was obviously his highlight. But all of it was so interactive and great. I didn’t know how a 5 year old would do, but we were there for 3 hours and didn’t even see it all. Great morning adventure while in the city!

Overall enjoyable!

By Martha C |

The variety of themes on exhibit were very enjoyable, from animals to rocks and dinosaurs. Also far away lands. Cafeterias were nice with a variety of foods.

The Field Museum is a gem.

By Dick B |

Fabulous experience; as always, the exhibits were educational as well as informative and entertaining. The staff were very helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly.

By Scott |

Clearly one of the best natural history museums on the planet. And all this for a very reasonable price.

In depth explanations for those who are interested in summaries for those who are looking for something to get interested in.

By Joshua S |

The campus of museums is wonderful and all within walking distance of each other. Just make sure nothing is going on at soldier Field or you will be in trouble trying to get an Uber. But I don’t hold that against the museums.

Sue the T-Rex was my highlight. I got a tattoo of her head after seeing a documentary about the poor dude who discovered her. The gem collection really impressed as well.

The museum deserves 4 hours minimum but you could easily spend a full day there. The restaurant is pricey, but when is a museum eatery cheap?

Obviously it’s touristy and when school is out you’re going to have plenty of kids. It hurts the enjoyment of films because many parents don’t know how to, well, parent.

Another Grand Wonder at the Field Museum

By MaryinChicago |

I went specifically to view the new spinosaurus acquisition. It was an amazing experience viewing the large skeleton hanging in the air! I couldn't even imagine anything like this before my visit! It is an uplifting moment when we are mentally elevated by the wonders of our world.

Very large museum

By Julie H |

Very large museum, beautiful collection on insects, very varied pieces, crystals, Egypt, large part on plants, seeds…
There were also a lot of stuffed animals, I'm not a big fan but for those who are interested it could be great.
There is really a lot to see and the building itself is very beautiful.
There is also a small corner where you can have lunch.
Really nice and reasonably priced

Amazing museum needs some TLC for core exhibits

By MaDier90 |

Magnificent museum with impressive atrium. Smaller but comparable to New York's Museum of Natural History. Very broad mix of exhibits; their animal dioramas are terrific. Sadly, some areas are in clear decline and in need of conservatorship, like the badly faded and shrunken collection of birds, and the frowsy South Pacific exhibit. Would like to see money spent on preserving and rehabilitating real, priceless, irreplaceable artifacts than on "interpretive" displays of trendy topics at extra charge. The proliferating temporary exhibit spaces make the rear galleries a firetrap maze. Pro tip - don't buy your ticket in advance. I did, and no one ever asked to see it.

By LiveAsATraveler |

What was once a bastion preserving, protecting, and promoting our natural world and the civilizations on it has become a quagmire of wokeness and elitism. At every turn you're told "you're on stolen land." Exhibits have been defaced by "artists" and the museum responds with letters of apology to the vandals! If you want to go, go now before exhibits start disappearing en masse as the museum slips into a frivolous cartoon of what if was.

Nice Natural History Museum

By Eric |

Pretty standard natural history museum in a nice building. The museum has 3 levels with some interactive experiences. Admission is free if you have a membership to another ASTC museum.

By frank a |

The evolution of this museum is simply incredible. Far more diverse in its presentation modes and much more interactive exhibits.

A negatively good experience

By MelindaMC74 |

We hadn't been to the museum in about 14 yrs. Our son really wanted to go so for his birthday we decided to surprise him. Either things have really changed or my memory is worse than I thought.😉
East parking lot was closed for construction so you're basically forced to park in the parking garage which is a farther walk, especially for people with any kind of disability.
Tickets for the 3 of us were $129, all access passes...unless you plan to spend all day there, that pass is really unnecessary. There's plenty to see without seeing the temporary exhibits. The 3D movie (We saw the story of Sue), though cool, is only 20 minutes. It's a nice little break from all the walking though.
The lower level restaurant was closed without any signage so we had to rearrange our plans & go back upstairs to the other restaurant. The food & drink prices are beyond ridiculous. Seriously $14 for a tasteless burger (no fries included), $5.50 for a bottled water, $4 for a small bag of chips?! Like I said ridiculous!! Almost $80 for 3 people to eat lunch, unenjoyable.
The place is immaculately clean. The employees are friendly. There's lots of benches throughout to rest. It's an interesting place & our son had a great time...so even though I found it a big waste, we'll chalk it up to a win.😂

By redlightonsinger |

The museum will appeal to visitors who have no comparison to others. We were personally very disappointed. The exhibits are mostly poorly made and the technology is ancient. Time seems to have stood still in the 70s and there is no wow factor. A waste of time. If you also have to spend $30 on parking, the atmosphere doesn't get any better.

By maddie |

We had so much fun at the museum! We were a bunch of mid-twenty year olds and there was plenty to see that was interesting. Sad that there were multiple exhibits that required an additional ticket though.

By Miguel |

It’s difficult to see all the exhibits in a logical flow because there are so many side halls. It would be nice if the museum prepared a flow chart with arrows indicating directions (as in an IKEA store) of all the rooms so that people don’t miss anything or end up back in a room where they’ve already been. Having said that, it’s a great museum!

Really good place to spend a day

By NMgal4life |

Huge natural history museum with tons of exhibits. If you have a dinosaur lover in your group they will be in heaven. Lots of (mildly macabre) exhibits of stuffed animals from around the world - cool to see them but sad to think that they were once alive. Really cool Egyptian exhibit too. We spent about 2 hours here only going through a few sections but you could easily spend much longer.

By Conny G |

The museum is large, with many exhibitions, the most attractive is that of dinosaurs with the history of the different mass extinctions that the Earth has gone through. They have many dinosaur remains, huge! There are many more exhibits, but just the dinosaur one took us 3 hours, it would take the whole day to tour the entire museum. It's worth it.

Incredible Museum and Breadth of Exhibits

By Tim K |

This museum is spectacular. My wife and I only had one free day on our recent trip to Chicago, and we spent hours between lunch and dinner at the Field Museum. We went to the top floor to begin, and the exhibits are so spectacular that we ran out of time to view anything on the main floor or the ground floor. The top floor contains almost all of the paleontology exhibits as well as geology and a room full of jade artifacts. We were captivated and realized we had to leave for dinner before we ever made it to the Egyptology and other sections of the museum. I would definitely go back for more!

A Day at the Field’s Museum with two sets of Twins!

By moodymolly |

We are from central Illinois and rode the train up for a couple of days with two sets of twins 6 & 9. We did Sloomoo and the Firld’s Museum - both were great! Everybody and everything at the museum were very interesting and kept the kids engaged. The Bloodsuckers were interesting, the 3-D movie kept them on the edge of their seats but the best parts were the many volunteers who interacted on a personal level. It’s the people that make this place great! Everyone from the ticket seller who really tries to save you money when there are 6 of you to the chef that makes GREAT chili to the coat check Bakari and his whole staff when you loose your tickets! Thanks to all for giving us a great day at the museum!

One of the nation's three premier museums

By Taylor B |

The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago is one of the largest and one of the most visited museums in the United States and one of the largest museums of natural history in the world. Located at 1400 South Lake Shore Drive, part of the city's Museum Campus, with the Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium, it is considered one of the three premier museums in the United States, along with the museums of natural history in Washington D.C. and New York City. Built in 1921 in renowned architect Daniel Burnham's Classical Revival style, its collection of over 24 million specimens and objects, including gems, meteorites, fossils, cultural artifacts and anthropological collections from around the world dates to the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. The permanent exhibitions includes Animal Halls, such as Nature Walk, Mammals of Asia and Mammals of Africa that allow visitors an up-close look at the diverse habitats that animals inhabit, including man-eating lions of Tsavo; Evolving Planet, which follows the evolution of life on Earth over four billion years, including fossils of dinosaurs and extinct mammals; Inside Ancient Egypt, which offers a glimpse into what life was like for ancient Egyptians, including 23 human mummies and a three-story replica of the tomb of the son of the last pharoah of the Fifth Dynasty featuring two authentic rooms with 5,000-year-old hieroglyphs; and The Ancient Americans, which displays 13,000 years of human ingenuity and achievement in the Western Hemisphere, including exhibits of Ice Age Hunters, Farming Villages, Powerful Leaders and Empire Builders. But the most popular exhibit of all is Sue, the largest Tyrannosaurus Rex dinosaur speciman discovered at the time she was unveiled in 2000. Sue has a length of 40.5 feet, stands 13 feet tall at the hips and has been estimated to weigh between 8.4 and 14 metric tons. She is estimated to be 67 million years old. The museum was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Great place learn about history. There is some much to see that we would need several days to take in the experience. The jewelry and gem collection is astounding. The mammal and reptile exhibit is truly amazing.

$300 for a family of 5

By Road19959980379 |

IMO inaccessible for an average income family to enjoy the museum (and eat). $91 for a panini sandwich, 3 orders of fries, 2 hotdogs, and a cheeseburger. $45 for a hot dog, mac & cheese, and a cheeseburger. $136 food total for 2 adults and 3 kids ages 11-15. Not to mention $145 to get in all access (bc why would we exclude exhibits?) and $25 to park. The enjoyment we took from the museum was just completely undermined by the high cost.

Am I wrong? Is the museum something a family should save up for as like a special trip to drop $500?

reconstruction of a three-story replica of an Egyptian tomb

By sanju_222323 |

Originally called the Columbian Museum of Chicago, the Natural History Museum occupies half an acre of Grant Park's Museum Campus and houses exhibits that showcase artifacts from multiple eras and destinations.
Some of the most popular parts of the museum include the "Inside Ancient Egypt" exhibit, which features a reconstruction of a three-story replica of an Egyptian tomb, one of the largest collections of mummies in the United States, and representations of life on the Nile.

between guys- no visit to The Field Museum would be complete without TREX which happens to be the largest, most complete T. rex ever discovered. SUE is 40 feet long from nose to tail and boasts 55 terrifying teeth.

There is plenty to see in this museum, so spend at least a few hours here. Shedd Aquarium, The Field Museum, and the Adler Planetarium -are all on the Museum campus and at a walkable distance.

Underwhelmed, Unwelcoming, and Overpriced

By UrbanMusings |

Visited with our three children under 5. We visit museums weekly and our favorite is Museum of Science and Industry. The entire vibe of the Field is to nickel and dime guests, and employees care so little that they are literally sitting and staring at their phones. First, the east parking lot was marked “full” even though there were plenty of spots available. Second, we entered the accessible entrance (handicap door button was broken) and by the time we got to the ticket counter we had passed four employees on their phones, including one who I tried to ask where the right ticketing counter was, who didn’t even acknowledge me even though his title was “greeter”. Tickets for basic admission are $32 for adults, $22 for kids ages 3 and up (cheaper for Chicago residents) and it costs $30 to park. Special exhibits are named Wild Colors, Death, China, and Underground. Bathrooms on the ground floor were good and well maintained. There is also a play area for kids ages 2-6, staffed again by employees who do not interact with guests and sit and cruise their phones. There is a bistro where we got two slices of cold, stale pizza (at 11am) and paid $24. The best exhibit was the dinosaurs, but there are no toilets anywhere close - my daughters and I raced through four extinction events and an entire hall of dried flowers and when we finally found one the water didn’t work. Overall - as Chicago residents we paid $60 for entry, $24 for our two oldest kids to eat a slice of pizza each, and $30 for parking. The Field has been trying to revitalize itself for years and as a first step, they should try to hire people who can give a minimal appearance of caring. Otherwise the museum feels tired, unwelcoming, and cheats it’s guests.

The museum is very large! There were tons of things to see. I think we spent 3 hours and didn’t see everything by. My complaint is there doesn’t seem to be any kind of flow to visitors. People were backtracking and seemed lost. We had a map and still got lost inside exhibits. They need a better flow of traffic inside the museum. Get there early! Tons of people so arrive early to try to avoid the long lines.

By Gest |

Beautiful building. Once inside very extensive collection with clear arrangement of all kinds of collections. Not seen in other museums of natural sciences. Highly recommended.

Yawn

By Kathleen H |

This is an old, tired museum with very little of interest to offer. Save your money and visit another museum when you are visiting Chicago.

So much to see!

By Mobile31404126859 |

Our four children loved the playroom on the bottom level. The interactions with the different displays really added to their experience.

By txrunnermom |

Family trip, with teenagers, to see Sue. We also ended up walking through several of the other exhibits as well. Spent about 3 hours total. Very good activity for the afternoon.

By kendellbrink |

We spent an interesting and educational cold January day at the museum. We bought our tickets through TripAdvisor on line and walked right in; there was an additional charge for the special Cats exhibit that was worth the price. This was my first visit to the museum. It is large and comprehensive. We spent 5 hours there and did not come close to seeing everything. Plenty to see when we return to Chicago!

I loved the evolving planet exhibit, especially on my most recent visit! It was so fun! That was my 43 visit!

Bad experience

By Grant J |

Didn’t offer us a refund for unused tickets booked in mistake horrible automated customer service. Should’ve been given a refund in full.

By Beachcomb_33 |

First time visiting but I liked it. It is a huge museum with different levels and tons of exhibits, so plan to spend the day. My favorite was the dinosaur exhibit. My advice is to arrive early because it does get busy. Nice size gift shop.

By cacnie |

Wow! Just wow! We had to skip a bunch of exhibits due to time, but honestly could have spent the whole day here. We definitely want to go back in the future. It was really amazing how much Egypt and dinosaur stuff they have.

Fine Old School Museum

By Potomac_11 |

This old school museum has a vast collection. We most enjoyed the dinosaur and prehistoric mammals exhibits, as well as the architecture.

By Kaley B |

We visited this last minute, this week on a random Thursday, we live about an hour away, and wanted to check it out with the kids.
Definitely a place you want to take your time walking through to be immersed in the history, if I went back I would want a tour guide, or like a headphone tour if they offered that, just to really know what I was looking at.
We brought our 10 month old and 5 year old with us, and honestly wouldn’t recommend this place for young kids, my kids see just too loud and I felt like I bothered others around us. My daughter is a very hands on learner and loves to touch the things, so this was not the place for her.
Very clean and comfortable place through, lots of history you do t even realized has been collected so very cool to see that. Definitely recommend going when it’s not super busy/with our kids and have at least 2-3 hours to really enjoy it!

Gorgeous building, great exhibits

By Zenfoo13 |

The Field Museum is one of the best in the country. Give yourself plenty of time to go through this beautiful museum.

Natural History Field Museum

By YASIR M |

I had an amazing time at the Natural History Field Museum! The exhibits are incredibly diverse, showcasing everything from dinosaur fossils to ancient cultures. The highlights for me were the stunning dinosaur hall and the impressive gem collection. The layout is spacious and easy to navigate, making it enjoyable to explore. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, offering great insights into the exhibits. Overall, a fantastic experience for all ages—definitely worth a visit!

By Johannes Van Dijk |

Outdated and boring.
Beautiful building, friendly staff.
Exhibitions boring, long winded explanations, minimal interactive stations.
Bland colouring and dark lighting.
Would not be attractive to kids at all.
Could not see the connection to each other of these random exhibitions.
Would give it a skip.

By Michael H |

I love museums, but more than three hours and I’m toast. I would highly recommend seeing Sue the tyrannosaurus and the dinosaur/ evolving planet exhibit. I would also recommend the African animals with the Tsavo lions. Very interesting story. Finally, be sure to see the Egyptian tomb. There is so much to see, and every part of the museum was interesting, but for me, those were the big three.

Speechless, amazing

By Albert G |

Watching a 67 million years old real T Rex is amazing, museum easy to walk around. In addition, the Egyptian exhibit was very well done

Kids are so happy.

By Kimitaka Sho |

I've been to Chicago many times, but this was my first visit to the museum. Kids were overjoyed by the dinosaur skeleton display, and it was worth a visit just to see it. Most of the exhibits are related to natural history, such as stuffed animals, but there is also an ethnographic section where adults can also enjoy. It's a big museum, so make sure you allow plenty of time.

Field Trip August 2024

By Andrew Whitaker |

One of my favourite museums, they have upgraded the "Sue" exhibit since I was last here in 2011. The section on the pacific and first nations is magnificent. The Dinosaur section is my favourite though. Young and big kids will love that. Don't miss the Lions of Tsavo. Give your self plenty of time.

Beautiful museum

By annelb123 |

The museum is so big you need more than one day to see all of. Beware on football game days the traffic is kind of crazy.

This is not an interesting place

By Allyson H |

If you like evolution, dinosaur skeletons, taxidermy and preservation of animals, fossils, and ancient Egyptian mummies and artifacts you’ll like this place. We don’t. We thought there would be more of a variety of historical world history items. We were wrong lol lots of money 🌪️🌀🚽😂🤪

5 things to know before you go

By walkersandtalkers |

So much to do and see that it gets overwhelming.

1) Grab a map near the ticket line and take a quick look before you run off to explore.

2) Get tickets on-line before you arrive. The non-ticket line is slow and long.

3) Get there 15 minutes before they open. You'll have great parking $22. This place gets crazy busy and we have found that it is most fun in the mornings before the long lines start.

4) All the really cool stuff costs extra and it isn't cheap. I think it was $14 dollars for my 12 yr old and $18 dollars for me. Pompaii, Submarine, etc, etc, etc........ and if you aren't there early, they get sold out.

5) Backpacks are allowed but they were searched. We packed our waters and other snacks for a full day experience. We end up leaving around 2 because it just gets too crowded.

By pil1515 |

Amazing exhibits. Beautiful building, and kind people. We were there 4 hours and saw about 1/2 of the exhibits. That was with the basic entrance ticket

Something for everyone to see

By Linda B |

A great Museum with a variety of different cultural. Yes, they have dinosaurs, also Egyptian display, my favorite was the gems and more. Plan ahead to spend at least 3 hours to get through the Museum. Plenty of things to see even had mummies if that is your thing. The staff was very helpful and friendly ask for a map so you can plan which floor or exhibits want to go to first. Check the dates since they are closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

So Much to See!

By Kittygal 🇺🇦 🌻 |

You could easily spend days at this storied place. I only had a short window if time, so made the most of it.

There's everything from dinosaur bones to gems and minerals. A detailed hall of plants beckoned, so I had a quick look and vowed to return again.

The famous Lions of Tsavo are here, who featured in the 1996 film The Ghost and the Darkness. Also in the African section is an interactive exhibit on the West African nation of Senegal.

A new display that celebrates the history of the local Calumet River and the region it encompasses was quite fascinating.

I love all things dinosaur, so spent time exploring the historical timeline and admiring the huge skeletons on display, especially Sue, the T-Rex. There are spectacular paintings all through the hall, done over the decades by artist Charles Knight.

I finished up visiting the South Pacific exhibit as I've traveled there. The collection is impressive and continues to evolve.

I'm sure I'll be back again next trip.

By Rodrigo F |

Great museum, awesome dinossaures, very clean and organized. Food is good, have a pepperoni pizza. Great value. 3d movie about dinosaurs I'm Antarctica is cool.

By travelernottourist |

I hadn’t visited since I lived in Chicago back in the 1980’s. It was a wonderful visit. My husband and I enjoyed many of the standard exhibits as well as some of the current showings. Of course, I was very excited to see Sue, the T’Rex that came to the museum more recently. It was presented well a she is magnificent. Also enjoyed many of the animal exhibits and jewels. The cafe has lots of great options in a Chicago hotdog!

By Ian G |

What an amazing place. There is so much to see here. Early Americans, Egyptians, Dinosaurs…. We could easily have spent many hours here.

Not to be missed!

By nikos k |

Extraordinary experience. You are immersed in images and meaningful information about different levels of ecosystems that have a very strong impact on the way you may view life and its forms. It was something I had not expected, as I am rarely a fan of museums of natural history.

A world of enchantment!

By Aparicio D |

Without a doubt one of the coolest places I've ever visited. It's huge and has everything in terms of natural history. It is clear that the highlight is the bone structures of the Dinosaurs, with emphasis on the Tyrannosaurus Rex and the Pterodactyl. Don't miss it!

Don’t miss this

By sweenee32018 |

An excellent museum with remarkable exhibits. We enjoyed all the gems exhibit, the Sue exhibit and Sue movie. The Early Kings exhibit was very inspiring. The bird exhort was informative. The Egyptian exhibit outstanding

By raju n |

An outstanding museum& experience. Particularly liked the american ( north& south) history was revelation. The gem museum, 3-D movie @ dinosaur were an experience. This museum is one of Chicagos best attraction. The building & the setting was imposing

By Judy C |

We loved all of it, especially Sue. We loved the gold jewelry, the jade, the mummies, the dinosaurs. One of the workers there led us to the south exit when we asked for directions there. He even waited while we shopped at the gift shop. Museum and rest rooms were spotless.

By Erann |

We found this museum to be very fascinating as well as educational. Some of the displays are so real that you can easily imagine what life was like back then. Or get a true feeling for how large dinosaurs really were. Or understand how other civilizations lived, worked, and survived. A wonderful experience and we would highly recommend it to anyone.

Awesome

By leroys73 |

My title sums it up. I walked to it from the Hotel Blake while my wife worked from our room. It was was a nice walk. I arrived just as it was opening. I have been in similar type of museums before. However, they cannot even come close to the Field Museum. I was overwhelmed with the exhibits. I spent about 6 hours there. I could go again today. Even if you are not really into prehistoric history and the development of civilization I think you could enjoy at least a short visit.

Small but solid

By Coyote-Travelerz |

The Field Museum offers a little of everything (dinosaurs, ancient americas, natural history, Egyptology, etc).

While the Field doesn’t have the depth of larger museums (the Met in New York comes to mind), it offers a good selection of specific items.

And yes, parking can be expensive, but don’t let that deter you from visiting.

By Jérémy P |

Very large museum, there is something to keep busy so you have to allow a little time to see everything quietly. We have already done the one in New York is this one impressed us with its size and impressive continuous.

Natural History Museum.

By Jota2015Ce |

Giant museum of Natural History and Anthropology, very interesting, but with some especially tedious and old-fashioned exhibitions. Although it can be toured in a day, it is impossible to see everything carefully.

Highlights include the Maxima and SUE dinosaur skeletons, the largest, most complete and
best preserved in the world. Also very interesting is the collection of Egyptian mummies, rooms with precious stones and the collection of fossils.

There are several restaurants, dining areas (you can bring food from home), souvenir shops, bathrooms...

Depending on which ticket is purchased, the tour also includes a 3D cinema and several temporary exhibition halls.

Opens daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Native TRUTHS was Amazing. It's rare to find indigenous peoples true history told in truth. Thank uou.

By mary f |

Great displays. Great layout. Went on labor day weekend and it was quite crowded. We bought the tickets on trip advisor for 2pm. We had to get in line but it went fast. Too much to see in an afternoon. Took a bus from Magnificent Mile #146 for 2.50. All good values.

By Savannah C |

It was extremely interesting and interactive. Great for all ages!!! My 3rd time coming here and I spent 5 hours there. Definitely get your moneys worth

By Roxy C |

From giant dinosaurs like Sue to cool stuff about ancient times, it's a super fun and interesting place. Great for families and anyone who loves cool things from the past. Definitely check it out!

Skip it

By Jennifer H |

Definitely not a modern museum. Lots of antiquated exhibits. If you've been once, that's enough. The exception would be the dinosaurs. If you have a kid who loves them, then they will probably enjoy themselves. Egyptian exhibit is probably second best. Not worth the expense in my opinion.

By jodlynn95 |

Spectacular museum! Definitely needed another day to see everything! Saw all three dinosaur movies, walked through the incredible underground exhibit, spent several hours with the dinosaurs and perused Ancient Egypt. So much to see and all ages loved our day there!

By Tinny G |

First of all, don't come hungry. The cafeteria is atrocious and expensive. The staff are very rude. I tried to order a sandwich and they just "we're out of that sandwich" and turned around and walked away. I went to the salads in the fridge and luckily I looked at the bottom of the container to see they were trying to sell mea salads for 14 dollars that was made 5 days ago.

It was honestly impossible to enjoy any of the exhibits after that.

By Amilcar Guzman |

A world class museum in the heart of
Chicago. The Field Museum provides one of the best places in the country to check out natural history exhibits.

Field Museum an excellent museum

By Dymok |

We were in Chicago visiting the University of Chicago and decided to go to the Field Museum. The museum left us impressed, everything was very nice, pleasant, clean, and very careful. Everyone who works there is very professional and explains everything to you very well. We did the dinosaur tour with a free guide from the museum which explained a lot of interesting things to us. Actually, the dinosaur remains on display there are mostly real signs indicating which are real and which are added pieces to complete. The 3D movie is very interesting, as well as the experience of death.
This is an excellent museum, I really recommend it.

By A Midlife Adventure |

I'd forgotten until we visited that the Americans have a tendency to do everything on a much bigger scale than us Brits and their museums are no exception.
We allowed up to six hours to cover everything in the Field Museum (a bit like the Natural History Museum in London) but I'm beginning to realise that my midlife brain can only cope with about four hours before it goes into system overload which was the case here. It's spread over three floors and I'm afraid I didn't make it to the third floor.

We enjoyed:
Africa and alongside this the long term cultural effects of slavery
Death: Life’s Greatest Mystery ( I like the idea of the pod!)
Native Truths: Our Voices, Our Stories
Pawnee Earth Lodge

You really need a full day to explore everything this wonderful museum has to offer.
Fortunately you have everything you need to do this as alongside all the exhibitions there are plenty of very clean bathrooms, places to buy everything from snacks to a proper lunch and above all else there are places to eat your own picnic to keep cost down.
They also cater for all ages. We saw plenty of interactive, educational but fun displays for kids to use.
Staff were all super friendly wherever we went.

Worth my time & money

By OnAnotherJourney |

Depending on your interest level you could easily spend more than a day here. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for small children though as there are limited interactive exhibits and plenty of reading. The current special exhibit related to death was worth the extra fee, although I recognize not everyone is as interested as I am! Throughout this exhibit there are kiosks where you can answer a few questions about your thoughts on death and then shares the results of previous visitors. I appreciated some of the questions challenged me to reflect on my own personal views.
I also looked forward to the Egyptian exhibit, although there is very low light in some areas which made it challenging to read some of the information.
It was disappointing to see the perpetuation of the myth that the first Europeans arrived in 1492 (see photo) - when will that end?!

In terms of food, I had a pretzel, small tub of berries and water for $19. As someone with post-concussion syndrome, I was grateful for the seating area just past cashier, as it was a bit quieter.

I think some of the negative reviews are written by white folks who don’t want to accept the reality of colonialism. Instead of taking the opportunity to hear voices that have been silenced for a long time, some take it as a personal attack. Museums such as this have a long history of taking/buying cultural items they had no right to, so it’s refreshing to see the Field Museum be more transparent and responsible for past behaviour. Parts of this experience might make you feel uncomfortable but if you embrace it you may learn something about yourself and your fellow humans.

By Kimberly S |

There was so much to learn and the museum is massive. I loved learning about different cultures and history. I mostly enjoyed the native American area.

A must do museum

By Cindy B |

What a wonderful museum! There isn't anything I can think of that they do not have. It was an amazing afternoon spent wandering the halls and we could have spent the entire day here. Signage and directions were a bit vague but no big deal.

Great museum

By Bz55 |

Due to our flights being cancelled for poor weather. We decided to go site seeing around Chicago and ended up here at the museum. We got free access as our company donates to the museum so we had nothing to lose. We parked close by for 30$ and a short walk later we were in side. We walked around for about two hours and seen a lot of cool stuff. Museums never disappoint and this one had a lot of cool stuff to see, read and watch. Lots of space for people to walk and many attendees walking around with artifacts and teaching moments. We enjoyed our time here

By Chris H |

Right across from Soldier Field and next to the Shedd Aquarium. This is a 3 story monster of a building. I'm going to start with my biggest negative first. There is no coat check or lockers to store your heavy winter coats. This is a huge negative to me having to carry my heavy winter coat everywhere. I don't care if it's free or $5 like at Shedd, this is a bad oversight of the Field. Next my biggest piece of advice. Make this your only plan of the day. You could easily spend 6 hours here. I sadly only planned for about 2 1/2 hours and only saw maybe 40%. Thankfully it was the 40% I most wanted to see.

This place can be quite the maze. Wandering in multiple directions in each exhibit. I saw dinosaurs and Gems. I saw Chinese Jade and Roman Jewelry. I saw Pacific Islanders exhibits of all sorts. I saw meteorites and fools gold. Plus this was just the 3rd floor.

There is something for everyone here to see and love. This and Shedd are probably the two best attractions in Chicago. Overall an easy 5 star review. Would I return? Duh, I have another 60% to enjoy. Next time I'll come with plenty of time.

By Pompeylad |

Absolutely brilliant, informative, interactive museum. So much to see & do. We spent 5 hours here & only scratched the surface.
But I’m almost 70 & ran out of steam. The grandson is 17 & started to be bored, so a 2nd visit is required.

World Class

By AC_A340 |

This museum is amazing. Best attraction in Chicago in my opinion. Could easily spend a day there. Not too crowded, fairly priced.

Stunning

By Emilie L |

Superb museum, huge, so much to see, we hadn't planned enough time, I highly recommend during a stay in Chicago

By kashyapnimisha |

We went to the field museum with our almost 4 yr old child. He enjoyed the dinosaur skeletons m. The Egyptian Pharaoh was something we just walked by and I didn’t want my child to see those things or question me about the after life things.

Please carry food or snacks with you, the food court/bistro is very very very expensive. Also if you are someone having food restrictions (like Indians have, it is best to carry your own snacks/food). If you are not carrying food then don’t worry, there are few food stalls right outside the Shedd aquarium and you can have food there.

Field museum is next to Shedd Aquarium, one can cover these two together. Field museum is covered under city pass.

Great way to experience the museum

By Trisha A |

Would absolutely recommend this to anyone who wants to experience the museum without the crowds. Our guide was knowledgeable and knowledgeable and fun! We will be back for more!

By drwjoe |

The enormity of the museum defies description!!! Almost every subject on earth was on display in magnificent form!!! It would require several days to see them all and read the displays. The staff was very helpful, quite friendly, especially the security guards and some of the helpers, like Yvonne and Sabrina! Food was excellent too!!

By MKTBE |

The Field Museum of Chicago is an expansive Natural History Museum. It is located in Grant Park on the shore of beautiful Lake Michigan. There are nearly 40 million artifacts as a part of the museum collection. It explores everything from ancient cultures to new scientific discoveries, such as the famous 'Sue' - the largest intact dinosaur ever discovered (South Dakota, 1990). Our 6-year-old granddaughter loved how interactive the museum exhibits were, including buttons to push, videos to watch, light-up displays, and a small play lab. The Chicago Field Museum is so extensive that there was no way to see everything! We will return!

Wonderful Field Museum

We found it a wonderful place, with very well-kept displays, where they manage to set scenarios that facilitate understanding the conditions in which different animals have lived. We had fun and learned a lot.

The place has an unbelievable number of artifacts and displays. I was surprised that I had spent close to four hours looking at everything and could have spent even longer. It is well worth the price of admission.

Sue is the highlight

By Tbryan8387 |

Enjoyed our visit, especially seeing Sue the T-Rex. Well laid out and pretty easy to move from exhibit to exhibit. Had the CityPass so we could go in the extra exhibits. Probably not have seen them if we had to pay extra. I don't like when museums do that.
