Beautiful for Iowa.

Beautiful museum for Iowa. For being in the middle of the country, and in the middle of nowhere, I found this place quite nice. Clean venue, spacious, interesting works of art. I would recommend if in the area.

A Museum for the Cities

By BMave |

This is such a cool place to have in the QCA. If you appreciate the Arts there is a nice collection of pieces here. I went specifically for the Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit however I really enjoyed walking throughout all the levels. There was a Haitian art exhibit, and a really neat exhibit of letters that were found inside bottles floating down the rivers across the country. A photographers exhibit had captured images from Mississippi river towns from MN to LA and that showed diversity. There was a special display about the new I-74 Bridge being built as well, the planning, design and efects on the river eco system. The space was clean and well respected. Good place for a couple to spend a few hours, a family to wander around and yes it would be OK for kids if you kept an eye on them.

Thursday night event always entertaining and happy hour too!

By Constance M |

I have a membership but I think the Thursday evening events are free. Last week it was an independent film by a local screenwriter. This week a poetry reading by young writers and a professional poet. Can't wait for next week. The cafe was open for happy hour and we enjoyed a cocktail and barbeque nachos. Very good.

See as much or as little as you like.

This museum is funded by the city of Davenport and is totally free to the public. The building is new and modern but some of the collections of art donated to the museum by rich families in the area dates back to the Renaissance period, as well as some local art. Only about 15 percent of what the museum owns is displayed at any one time so if you return a few months later, there are different works of art. There is no docent so view at your leisure.

Local art scene

Great local events, lots of difference stuff going on. Went for a mardi gras celebration. Had lots of local food vendors, so much fun.

Great Museum

My husband and I enjoyed an afternoon in your Museum in downtown Davenport. Only 2 floors were available and they was very interesting things to view. We will be back.

By traveler_from_Iowa |

We have been meaning to visit for several years. This weekend we finally had time opportunity for a visit. What a treat. Maybe we were lucky on the exhibits currently on display, but we loved the exhibits. The museum has a much larger exhibit space than I have come to expect from a city the size of Davenport. Exhibits in any museum change over time, so there isn't really any point in praising this exhibit or that exhibit, just overall we applaud the choice of exhibits the museum had on display.

Very nice museum

By Taz1040 |

Many important works are housed in this very modern museum. Definitly a good stop while in Davenport.

A "Must See" in Davenport!

By Darlene B |

This special museum in a small, Iowa town is a wonderful space to visit. You get to see modern art, classic art and local art. The building itself is a large, serene spot. Very friendly and informative staff. If I lived nearby I would visit the Figge all of the time.

A Wonderful Visit

By Aaron Shelby |

My Dad and I spent an afternoon here while visiting the Quad Cities during the Christmas holiday season. We thoroughly enjoyed the visit and art on display at the time. We came specifically for the "Art and Activism at Tougaloo College" exhibit and enjoyed it. We definitely appreciated the variety of works in the exhibit. The museum and galleries themselves are well maintained and quite architecturally forward. Make sure to stop in while in the Quad Cities!

A Good Few Hours

By ecullen2014 |

I took my kids (14, 12, 10) to their first art museum--although it was not their favorite, they all seemed to find something they enjoyed. The kids create room with art supplies and Lego was much enjoyed--and helped break up the viewing of the art work. We spent a few hours there and it was a learning experience for my kids.

Amazing

By Amanda A |

I've never really been to an art museum before, so this was eye-opening for me. The Figge is gorgeous. I can't believe such a beautiful museum is in a relatively small Midwest city. I highly recommend going here.

It looks really neat... and some of it is... but...

By Stephen G |

They have some beautiful works of art there but you have to really look for them. They are on the 2nd floor off on the side. The main area is modern junk. And the Haiti works of are sad. Some stuff is great, but for the time and the money - go to the Putnam Museum.

Well Done! Spacious!

By mike l |

A lovely museum. Open, spacious. Friendly staff. Lots of variety ... Frank Lloyd Wright, Grant Davis, western art, Spanish art, Picasso, ceramics, metal, etc. Something for everyone. Very nice opportunities for children to participate in creating art. Ample parking. Free museum. Go!

Beautiful Exhibits!

By Annette D |

I attended the Tall Prairie Grass exhibit while in Davenport on business. They also were showing a Wizard of Oz exhibit which was outstanding! This Museum is clean, beautifully decorated and offers simple dining, and a gift shop!
I would highly recommend attending what ever exhibit is showing.

Nice and Modern

By Mike K |

A wonderful addition to this city! Nice Grant Wood exhibit when we visited. Start at the top floors and work your way down. The second and first floors have quite a bit to see. The gift shop is really excellent!

beautiful

The building is beautiful and spacious. It has interesting displays.
If you are looking for a different gift, the gift shop has some very excellent items for all ages.

"There's Always Something New To See At The Figge".

By Susan M |

I recently spent the better part of an afternoon at the Figge Art Museum with a friend and my 8 year old granddaughter. We went there to view the Louis Comfort Tiffany exhibit, an exquisite display of windows, lamps ,vases and more from the Driehaus Collection. Even my eight year old granddaughter couldn't help but be enchanted by the beauty of this collection. Tucked away in the Lewis Gallery is the Art Nouveau Amphora Exhibit. This style of art pottery became popular the same time as the architecture of Wright came into prominence, making it a perfect companion exhibit to the Tiffany one. We also enjoyed a delightful lunch at the Figge Café with a view of the Mississippi River.

Another great visit

By MATT G |

The traveling exhibit was worth the trip, but the permanent exhibits are always worth another trip. Parking was fine and staff were friendly

Don't miss it

By skiNebraska |

Yes, Davenport gives you world class art fro Rembrandt to Local artists. We missed the Wizard of Oz art work but the Portraits exhibit is just wild. Never saw anything like it. It's even hard to describe: interesting, captivating portraits on one side, landscape on the other. Great docent tour

Awesome Art Museum

By mississippibelle_28 |

I love this art museum. The artwork there is beautiful. I am glad that we have a place like this in the QC. It's also free for students which is also a plus.

So much more to this museum than paintings on the walls.

By sherry0224 |

There's so much more to this museum than paintings on walls! World Class Art Museum. Tasteful gift shop. Community center. Restaurant and bar....all this and a River view to die for!

Great showcase for special attractions

By Elaine K |

May 26 through May 30 the Figge is displaying 100 cellos painted by local artists in collaboration with the 100th Anniversary of the Quad City Symphony. This concludes a springtime of sharing art and music which included a concert by YoYo Ma and an auction of 10 of the most outstanding works of cello art.

The cellos are in the lobby. There is no charge to visit the lobby or gift store.

Outstanding place

By Susan S |

Love bringing friends to Figge/ a gem in the QCA! All ages enjoy including children. Beautiful overlook of the Mississippi River from the South Windows. Permanent collection is outstanding & great special exhibits!

AMAZING

By Dolphin147 |

There were a few negative reviews. And they made me nervous. Guess we all have our opinions. I have been to many NY city museums. And I was amazed at the Figge. It’s not the MOMA, Guggenheim, or MoNH, but seriously for Iowa I was super impressed. I saw a Monet, Renoir, Manet, and several other French Impressionists. There was a lot to see. Some local artists as well. Beautiful. Plan to go back. People were super nice too.

Go for the art .. Stay for the views!

By Frederick S |

Ever-changing exhibits, ever-changing views of the majestic Mississippi River .. The Figge is a worldclass museum designed to view art in a stunningly modern setting. There are surprises around every corner, every stairwell, so be certain to take your time and wander everywhere.
Return worthy? Absolutely!

A gem of a museum!

By SarahLynnDee |

The Figge Museum is a gem in the Quad Cities. We have enjoyed their special exhibits as well as exhibits from their collections. The gift shop is fun to browse in and features the works of local artists. we hope to try the cafe one day.

This was a very pleasant surprise! It was worth the time. I highly recommend taking an hour or so the visit. Outstanding

By Dean |

This is well worth the time to visit. I was not expecting that in Davenport. So, if you’re in the Quad cities area, go and check it out. We parked in the front but there’s more parking in the back.

Good local art museum

By Beth B |

I appreciate the museum's focus on local artists, including an exhibit featuring work of local elementary school students. A fantastic collection of Grant Wood (an Iowa native) paintings. They had some interesting exhibits bringing together art and culture through a look at how the portrayal of sports in artwork has changed over time. Museum is well designed and flows nicely from one area to another. Not a lot of hands-on exhibits so a good choice for adults and older teens, not so much younger kids.

An Amazing Collection Of Great Artists

By Connor M |

I went here with my father about a month ago while I was here on a visit to the Quad Cities. We loved the exhibit about Haitian art as well as the one about Frank Lloyd Wright. Additionally we both were amazed by the amount of paintings from famous artists like Picasso and Grant Wood.

It really lived up to its reputation as the most interesting museum in town. We were slight dissappointed to hear that some of the art will be going to a different museum soon, but as a fellow museum worker I understand that is out of their control.

I look forward to revisiting this museum soon and bringing friends as well.

It's all relative

By Lucky_Eddie |

In New York or Chicago, this would be well down your list. But for this relatively small town area, it's pretty impressive. Nice building, though a lot smaller than it appears from the outside. Nothing overly exciting on display, especially the permanent collection, but a reasonable way to spend a couple of leisurely hours. We were surprisingly impressed by a display by a bunch of schoolchildren. Okay, most of their work was best suited for fridge doors, but some struck us as remarkably talented. All indicated what artist had inspired them. We're impressed that kids here are being taught about famous artists and being encouraged to express themselves. Frankly, we'd never heard of many of these until we were adults. The future of art in America is bright indeed.

Fun and Interesting Trip

By sg8887 |

We went during the first week of July and during that time there was free admission. We got maps when we walked in, but had originally thought we were meeting for a tour. The gentleman at the front desk said there was no tour but pointed us to one of the docents. She gave the two of us a wonderful, hour long tour. She showed us important pieces and talked about the artists and the style of each piece.
The museum itself was very interesting. It had a wide range of pieces and styles. The view over-looking the Mississippi River isn't bad either!
The Where the Wild Things Are exhibit was wonderful, and would be very engaging for kids. I believe this is a rotating exhibit, so I would check to see if it is still there before going.
Overall, it was a very nice trip and the museum would be a great way to spent a few hours out of the sun. There is a small parking lot in front of the museum, but there is also street parking around as well.

Must see

By Mariagordotanomas |

I moved from Chicago Area & desperately needed an Art experience & found it here! I was driving thru Davenport & hoped to stay 4 hours, but I missed the museum lunch & guest services do not include snacks or vending machines so I was forced to walk the neighborhood but did not find anything close-by. Frustrated I had to cut my museum day short, the day I planned for weeks.

It was a joy just being inside the building with it's post minimalistic grandeur. The painting are well placed to provide nice contrasts. So happy to see a full sized Mary Cassatt pastel drawing & German artist's late 1800 Western landscapes! Something for everyone. After several hours, I needed coffee & a break before looking at photography which is a day by itself. I do wish a vending machine was available. Even an apple & coffee would have given me a couple more hours. Next time I'll know to pack a sandwich.

A major museum and one of the oldest municipal museums in the country

By Gabriel H |

Technically, the Figge opened in 2005, but the collection started as early as 1850. Over the past 150 years, the collection has changed names and locations and kept growing the collection, which today has more than 4,000 works of art. Some date back to the 16th century. It is notable because of the large collection of Colonial Mexican Art, American art spanning several centuries and including well-known artists, such as Whistler, Homer, Wyeth Warhol Johns and Bierstadt. The European collection includes Rembrandts, Goyas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Renoir, Durer and others. There are also notable Asian artists. The museum is a great resource for the art programs of several surrounding colleges and universities. The super-modern design is the work of David Chipperfield, a well-known British architect.

The Figge never disappoints

By IowaIndigoGirl |

This was our second time here, and we were pleasantly surprised to get in free as they were offering free admission in July. We loved most of the exhibits, but especially enjoyed the POP Power exhibit, the Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit, and the carnival exhibit. This is s beautiful art museum and Davenport is very lucky to have it. It’s well worth your time to spend an hour or two here. Be sure to check out the awesome gift shop too.

Gem in Davenport

By Tommy B |

My wife really wanted to get to Davenport in time to spend a couple of hours in the Figge Museum. Particularly she wanted to see "Portrait of Maquoketa". We were driving in from northern Indiana, so time was of the essence.

After a quick lunch downtown, we came to the museum. The first thing to strike us was the building itself. It is modern and very beautiful. The galleries are really well done with many fine examples of different art genres. Especially interesting to me were the galleries showcasing Legacies of Iowa. Grant Wood and others are highlighted here.

But the real treasure is the Portrait of Maquoketa. It is terrific and just returned from a stay at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. It consists of 180 individual portraits. But on the back on 38 panels is a scene of the town. You must sit in a chair to get the full stereoscopic perspective of the work. It is truly amazing.

This museum is a real gem in Davenport. Who knew that such a museum would exist in this Midwestern town.

By all means, come visit this museum!

By Sharon M |

Great place to take the kids for something different. They can actually learn something while they are here.

a real treat, unexpected treasure

By greenfeet |

We went to the Figge to see the exhibit of quilts. (Having seen the fabulous collection in Paducah, KY, this was a grouping of various antique quilts - many from 1840-1870), The quilts were certainly worth the stop, but the unanticipated treat was the exhibit Portrait of Maquoketa: The Dimensional View which was a very engaging installment; it helped that the artist was actually present and working though available to interact with visitors.

This is not a large gallery, but it does displays it's work in a clean and direct way that I appreciate.

Enjoyable

By James P |

It was an enjoyable visit. Probably not something we will do again. The European collection was nice. If you have a couple of hours to fill and enjoy regional art I would recommend it. Not something I would build a visit around though.

An extraordinary museum

By David M |

The museum is brimming with wonderful and fascinating collections. The exhibits are thoughtful, timely and quite contemporary in their display. The environment is pleasing, but they do need better parking.

Don't miss this museum

By Zabelle |

Gorgeous building with some very interesting exhibits. Don't miss the Grant Wood self portrait. Nice gift shop as well. Only complaint, wish they had art postcards of more of their work, no William Merritt Chase or Henry Raeburn.

Free family day

By Days Inn Walcott |

My first time being here was on the last free family day. I brought my son and we had so much fun! The art was beautiful and they had so many different experiences to offer!

Lovely museum

By Lindsey A |

The Figge is a very nice addition to down town Davenport. The structure of the building is beautiful and unique. It definitely stands out when your driving around down town. This summer (2016) they are offering free admission! The exhibits change and currently they have a Wizard of Oz floor that has props, posters, and the movie playing. They also have little wizard of oz art projects for the kids. If visiting this museum, keep in mind that it is a museum and is structured for older youth or adults. It is nice that they do cater to some of the younger children on one of the 4 floors.

If visiting with friends or significant other there is a small bar that serves drinks and wine! Enjoy some art and a beverage as you walk around.

Nice museum

By Julie H |

There was plenty to see and a nice variety of art. It took about 90 minutes to view all the art. I thought $10 was a little expensive, but it was a nice way to spend the afternoon.

Great modern museum

By Punto_in_aria |

This is such a nice museum. They have great exhibits. I'm really into textiles and they've had great exhibits. The architecture is beautiful, I've also been here for a wedding and it's great.

A Downtown Davenport Treasure

By JMCSTL |

My wife & I recently visited the Figge Art Museum for the fourth time in the last 7 years. Ever since our first visit on a rainy early fall afternoon, we have included a stop at the Figge on our return itineraries to the Quad Cities. For a small museum in a small Midwest town, this is an amazing facility that mixes regional & multi-cultural art pieces in its permanent collection with a thoughtful variety of temporary exhibitions that offer something beautiful & unusual for all tastes in the arts. Each of the exhibit spaces is well lit & uncluttered, allowing visitors plenty of room to examine the works of art without feeling crowded by the installations or by their fellow guests. The Figge also partners with local arts foundations & schools to tie curricula to the traveling exhibitions, dedicating a very large section of their museum space to classrooms & workshops & a small performing arts theater/lecture hall. Pieces produced during these sessions are often mixed into an exhibit or shown in a special exhibition. There is always a public area set up for visitors of all ages to try their hand at an art project of various sorts associated with a major exhibition on display. The combination of ever-changing art collections from around the world and from around the region offers a recurring appreciation of how art & art education support one another for the long-term benefit of our communities.

The exhibit & learning spaces are housed in an amazing museum building rising near the Mississippi River in Downtown Davenport, a smoky green glass & steel structure designed by renowned British architect David Chipperfield. There are a few handicap parking spots & about a dozen free public spaces on the plaza near the museum's main entrance (we've always found an open spot there), plus affordable street & ramp parking nearby (see the museum website for options). The very reasonable admission prices - don't forget your senior or student or active military or AAA discounts - are paid at the checkout counter of the museum gift shop, which is conveniently located at the front of the facility (not positioned strategically at an exhibit space exit to persuade visitors to spend more money like at most other art museums). Another unique feature of this museum complex is the huge public/freight elevator combination, which doubles (or triples?) as a clean modern display space for exhibit information to browse as you ride between floors. The staff members in the shop & throughout the museum are very friendly and helpful, and the public spaces are always clean & well maintained (including the ground floor restrooms & the large free coat check/storage locker room).

The Figge Art Museum is truly a treasure for the Quad Cities as well as for its visitors, making it a must-see for people of all ages and levels of interest in art. My wife & I will continue to enjoy the facility and its exhibits on every visit to the area.

We love the Figge!

By Kathryn C |

The Figge is a great place to visit any time of the year. We bought a membership so we can go back anytime we want and see the new exhibits. My girls love creating new things in the kids' space-we can easily spend an hour in that part alone. My only complaint is the lack of classes for kids during the school year. However, the school age art display that features artwork from local schools is s great way to bring more kids in to explore.

Unexpected gem

By Sam S |

Our visit was to see the Black Doll exhibit. Finding the 4 floors of art was a pleasant surprise....especially the Remington sculptures and Grant Wood paintings

An overnite is a must to see this exhibit before mid-February 2017

By susanne lenz l |

The Figge Art Museum (563 326 7804)is located in downtown Davenport on the Mississippi River. Be sure and eat lunch there [the fish tacos are not mild they are not with hot chiles!] The show there to mid February (better check the date of closing) PORTRAIT OF MAQUOKETA is absoutely worth the trip. This show has been in Washington DC at the National Portrait Gallery to name one..and a very famous site! Rose Frantzen, artist [with many, many awards] painted 180 portraits over one year's time [not all in this exhibit] ..anyone who would sit for 5 hours ..in the the small [around 6,000] in Maquoketa, IA...BUT that isn't the end of it...They are hung through the hall vertically in groups of 6...with depth in the hanging. On the BACK of this swath of portrait hangings across the room is a panorama, also in depth, of Maquoketa. You MUST sit in a particular spot [a chair calls out to you] to view the incredible depth..of this panorama...it is mesmerizing...like looking though an old stereoscope ...you are absolutely on the same hill with Rose Frantzen looking into this town...and you 'visit' the inhabitants. And in fact the Squire's Manor owners are part of the 'show.' You may as well go on to Maquoketa and stay (about 60 minutes drive to the north) at this incredibly well done Squires Manor 418 W Pleasant St. (phone 563 652 6961)with antiques collected over the lifetime career of Vern & Cathy Banowicz. Cathy serves up a fabulous breakfast. Do this this weekend.

Fun and Unique!

By Maddie G |

It's a very unique art museum. There are many opportunities for people to create their own art inspired by the art in the museum. Some parts may be boring for kids, but creating personal art using various elements is very appealing!

Great Facility

By ian r |

We lucked out in that admission was free, but we would have paid anyway.

The art ranges from modern through local to traditional with something for everyone - and interactive opportunities too.

There is a cafe but unfortunately it was not open when we visited.

Staff were friendly and helpful.

Not a place to spend a day - but worth a couple of hours.

Excellent Experience

By Esther P |

This is a gorgeous, well designed and manageable museum with a good gift shop. It took me about an hour to go thru the collection. The guards on each floor are knowledgeable and are willing to tell you a bit about the collection in that area and the best way to walk to make sure you see everything.

Be Wowed In The QC!

Really unique art displays on multiple floors. I have been here many times and have never regretted the time spent.

Nice art, but strange building

By jjctraveler |

This was my second trip to Figge. I am really into architecture so I was excited about David Chippefield’s building. From the outside, the all glass building is stunning. It does not blend in with downtown Davenport, so it is kind of an oddity, but it gets your attention. The inside I still find disappointing. The layout is just not logical, and parts of the building were closed off when I visited in May. A large portion of the building seems to be set aside for support, administration and offices with only a small portion dedicated to art galleries.
The art was mostly on the second floor with a good selection in the permanent collection including Thomas Hart Benton, Grant Wood and the Frank Lloyd Wright pieces. I found the lighting to be harsh, and the galleries amplify noise. There was a school group visiting when I went, and while the kids were actually very well behaved, the slightest noise echoed through the galleries. Chipperfield used an acoustical drywall when he added on to the St. Louis Art Museum which calms noise, it would have been nice if it had been used at Figge.
Photography is limited to just a few galleries of the permanent collection. There are a few parking spots out front by US bank; otherwise there is street parking or a parking ramp close by. There is also parking along the river.
For the area, the art museum is outstanding.

Amazing!!

By goodboysammy |

Just recently visited. Wonderful Wizard of Oz display; people of ages will enjoy this. Also many hands-on activities for children...make/take, giant legos, computer games, etc. I might add that the amazing lighted corn display at the elevator entry is out of this world. That alone is worth a trip to this gold mine of a find the beautiful Quad-Cities!! I think many people forget about the many amenities we have in this area and the Figge is one of them. Please take time to stop by. A side note on the "cafe" at the Figge. It is good, but it could be exceptional. I have been very discouraged by recent lunches .... sliders were horrible...just a rolled up plain beef meatball on dry buns.. no flavor; nothing exciting about it..I could've done better at home. This little cafe is a beautiful place..wonderful view, nice atmosphere, etc., but the food leaves a lot to be desired. Being in the Figge (a unique and special place) it should be unique as well. You only need a little spice here/there and pretty plating to be special and unique..also flavor. My friends and I will not be back any time soon as we have tried it several times and have not been happy. Sad to say as when they opened the paper raved about the chef and the connection to the machine shed restaurant, but, alas, food is very mediocre. Just go the the Figge and forget the cafe...you will not be sorry; the collections are wonderful.

Exceed my expectations!!

By OmahaGal52 |

Exceeded my expectations!!! I stopped here while visiting. The Woman’s in Sports was a draw for me!! However after visiting the rest of the museum I suddenly realized that this place is amazing!! The Quilt show was also stunning!! Check this place out!!!

It was surprisingly very unique!

By Natalya C |

I very enjoyed it. I was alone in many rooms of that place. Second floor is the most interesting. I absolutely loved it. Make sure your phone is charged, you can listen guide on it.
It's worth to go! It's free admission this summer. Third floor is closed, they arranging something new there.
One thing I did not like, they lucked the door at 4:45 pm to my favorite exhibits. Supposed to be open until 5 pm.

Surprisingly good museum!

By Clint M |

Stopped in for a visit on a Thursday night when apparently there is no fee for entry. I thoroughly enjoyed my trip here. Lots of great exhibits and interesting pieces. I would highly recommend.

Gorgeous building on the banks of the Mississippi

By Laurie C |

The Figge houses a growing collection in a lovely building with views of the river. A few surprises - such as the Max Beckmann triptych - as well as a focus on 19th-20th-century American art and exhibitions of local and regional artists, make this museum a welcome respite from the crowded galleries of larger facilities where sometimes you can hardly see the art. Here you can get up close, enjoy the serenity of the space, and relax. As a bonus, they have one of the nicest gift shops I've seen anywhere.

Dramatic architecture housing eclectic collection

By ThePackedBag |

There's a lit of everything in this museum. Modern art installations, classic artworks and everything you would expect from an art museum.

However, the building itself is a work of art and has fabulous views of the river. Well worth visiting.

100% recommended by an art teacher

By M. Burgher |

I spent the better part of a day wandering through the floors and exhibit areas looking at some really fantastic pieces of work. As a professional artist and master educator, I have been to the most prestigious, world renowned art spaces that are planet has to offer. For a relatively small town, this is an outstanding collection! World class art from around the world, and I appreciate their inclusion of Haitian works as well as European masters and the regionalist premier artist of Iowa, Grant Wood. Completely recommend!

Some very nice pieces

By dalia d |

Beautiful building and my impression was it serves as a community gathering
I saw many kids with their families and that is wonderful

Pretty river views from south side of building in addition to all the art!

By Ilikehomebest |

I'm a local who recently visited the Figge with an out-of-town family member. We both enjoyed it and spent a leisurely two hours browsing the museum. I think it's just the right size. Large enough, but not so large as to become boring. The ticket sales lady was very friendly and explained the layout of the building and suggested starting on the 4th floor and working our way down. This worked out great. This is really an excellent facility and if you like art at all, I think it's worth a visit.

A great surprise!

By cmhprh |

Quick: What do Grant Wood, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Frederick Remington, and Frank Lloyd Wright have in common? The Figge Art Museum in Davenport, Iowa, has pieces by all these artists!

Surprised? I was, as well. The Figge hosts the Grant Wood archives, an extensive collection of Haitian art (!), and other wonderful things. Its holdings are very eclectic, in fact, ranging from the 16th century to 21st century works.

Its location, just a block or so from the banks of the Mississippi River in Davenport, Iowa, is commanding. The building was the first American commission for British architect David Chipperfield, winner of the Stirling Prize in architecture.

The dining room overlooks the riverfront and the Mississippi, and it's a lovely place to have a meal or snack and just daydream.

Admission fees, for those who might live in major metropolitan areas, are down-to-earth, Midwestern reasonable. The posted price right now is $7 for adults. Come on, now! Where are you going to find this much value for $7?

If you like museums, you'll love the Figge (pronounced FIG-ee). Go. Go! You'll love it!

Family Fun All Ages

By David B |

Great place to relax, and enjoy. I love all the interactive things you can do with your children, or grandchildren. It's always changing. A great place to come and experience art of all kinds.

Try it - you won't be disappointed

By Bis54 |

There are more than exhibits at the Figgi. There are programs and fun things, free things and great gift options in the gift shop - my only disappointment is that there isn't an operational cafe. Free Thursdays after 5pm...the café is open, full bar and always a (free) program in the lobby. We recently attended a PechaKucha. Prior to the Pecha Kucha we enjoyed a $5 burger basket while sitting by the gigantic windows in the uber urban café then toured the exhibits. A really good night for $5/person.

A very nice local Art Museum

By Tsubasa99 |

A very nice selection of local cultural artists and on occasion special events from traveling exhibitions. Great outreach program for kids including a lego imagination area and art classes to inspire the next generation of artists. Great for the kids to learn more about culture and art!

Interesting place

By 821kathy |

Beautiful and elegant place. They support the kids arts from school alot. Great experience there. Been there twice, from my two daughters arts exhibitions.

amazing museum

By 724charlie |

Davenport has a gem. The building is impressive but inside the art collection is amazing! A large diverse American collection with works by Grant Wood, Andrew Wyeth, James McNeill Whistler, Ansel Adams and many others caught my attention but with over 4000 works of art there is something for everyone.

Wonderful Venue for party...

We hosted 220 guests for our daughter's wedding reception. It was great! We had fun and it was beautiful surroundings. The food was just great but, the setting was just awesome.

Wonderful

By Janet W |

My sister and I go there when we are in town. They always have a nice art show going on. The docent is very informative.,

We used them for our Class Reunion - GREAT CHOICE!!

By Lucky L |

This was an EXCELLENT venue for our class reunion!! The food was great, the venue was the perfect size, and the location was fantastic!!

I would highly suggest looking into using the Figge for your next large gathering!!

Wish we could give the Figge six stars!

By franny60 |

Cannot say enough good things about the Figge! We absolutely loved it! Permanent exhibits as well as special installations were wonderful, and the building itself is spectacular inside and out. It is a manageable size, too. We spent the morning, went out for lunch, and came back in the afternoon, and we saw everything. There is no cafe, but a very nice gift shop that features some local artists. Art lovers, do not miss this!

Great art in Iowa

By Minniemoe25 |

World class art museum in Davenport. Thursday is the free day. Also year around they offer programs for the qaud cities. The also have artiest come to the local grade school to teach art.

Haitian art and FLW

By KH2oson |

I was looking for something to do on. Saturday morning and came across this wonderful museum. FLW exhibit was a favorite for me - as was the Haitian art.

Nice sized museum ( plan on spending an hour or two). I really enjoyed the local artists being featured in the gif shop.

Great Wizard of Oz exhibit

By Becky G |

I was here to attend a conference and also spent some time looking at exhibits. It's a beautiful building, and the Wizard of Oz exhibit was great. They even had Oz things to buy in the gift shop.

Good timing

By Jonna Z |

Very glad that I was able to view the Edward Curtis exhibit. Just extraordinary photography! Great way to spend a couple of hours. The only negative is that the blinds were closed in the stairway so I could not take photos of the river.

ART at the Figge

By agnewre2016 |

Interesting display of art. Special poster section at the time we were there with many very old posters painted by well known artists of the time, along with paintings of assorted well know and local artists. Lovely museum donated by the Figge family.

Love the Figge

By Amos6022 |

I am happy that the Quad Cities is able to have such a nice, cultural place. The architecture of the building makes the downtown davenport area look lovely. It is great that they are getting traveling exhibits like The Wizard of Oz! Thanks!! Finally my kids(8,10) love going to art class during the summer! This gives them an experience they cant get other places.

Wonderful museum!

By brandie k |

What a wonderful museum! The admission price was appropriate. I spent a few hours here and enjoyed every minute. The docents were so incredibly knowledgeable of the artwork, it truly helped to amplify the experience. I was lucky enough to visit when several pieces were on loan from the Smithsonian. Also, the Cat exhibit, which happens to be near and dear to my heart, took up the entire second floor. Truly and wonderful experience.

Average little museum.

By Wilstanton |

My husband and I allotted ourselves two hours for the museum, which was an hour too much. The special cartography exhibit was wonderful. The top floors, not so much. The main gallery was very good, and the Arts and Crafts room was very nicely displayed. Looks like they are in the midst of some renovations, and the new spaces were very nice.

University of Iowa’s Art Collection....

By mlt_scorp |

The Figge Art Museum focuses on historic and contemporary art, life and culture.

Located near the Mississippi River in downtown Davenport, IA.

The museum is a great place for families. The museum has a great children’s and adult programs.

Wonderful Exhibits!

By Kathy R P |

The museum has many displays, including temporary ones. The one now is
"French Moderns: Monet to Matisse..". It is just wonderful. The museum has a lovely gift shop and coffee bar/restaurant. It's a nice place to visit and a wonderful venue for the quad cities.

Worth going

By D w |

There was controversy several years ago, when they were going to build the Figge. But I think it has proved the nay sayers wrong. The Figge is beautiful, from the exhibits to the scenery and views, it is a must go!

Lego exhibit

By Chris B |

Went with girlfriend and her 7 year old son, he enjoyed it and was impressed by the Lego buildings. Seeing the St. Louis Arch was the best for him because he's been up in it. He also played in the room with all the Legos with other kids.

Walked through all levels of the museum, fortunately without him breaking anything. Overall, a good time and burnt up 90 minutes for reasonable price.

Very nice

By Rhonda M |

Exhibits were great and arranged very attractively. Really enjoyed the children's exhibit. Very nice gift shop.

An enjoyable afternoon with the wife

By dfwsig |

We were visiting from Texas and went to the Farmer's Market in Davenport on the Mississippi (a very good one in our opinion). While driving around, we saw a nice looking building so walked over to see what it was and it was the Figge Art Museum. It was late morning so we went in and saw some great stuff. Especially enjoyed the Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit and found a couple of other very interesting pieces.
Inside the exhibits was a tad on the warm side and not sure if this is by design or being frugal. In any event, Go visit the Figge

Beautifully done mueum

By joaniemaria |

We visited during their free promotion. I hadn't been there for awhile. The Grant Wood exhibit of artifacts is interesting. Also, the items from the University of Iowa collection are worth a look. Another interesting exhibit were the "Messages in the Bottles" display of bottles found in the Mississippi River by Chad Pegracke's clean up crew. The museum store is worth a stop, too. The cafe/restaurant area has a wonderful view of Davenport's riverfront. It looks like a great stop for lunch, although a bit on the pricey side. I recommend you visit this museum when in Davenport.

A really cool museum!

By treysia |

We stopped at the museum since we had time and only one night in Davenport. There were great exhibits and kid areas for the kids to participate. Nice location downtown near food and the river.

A TRUE WORK OF ART!

By 888letsgo |

The building is in and of itself a spectacular work of art. The educational offerings for young and old are exceptional and instill an appreciation of art and the actual creation of art in the participants.

The Figge exhibits are truly world class and not to be missed.

The Figge is indeed a crowning glory for the Quad Cities.

Great Art Museum (free admission till Sep-20th-2015)

By Fernando Castel |

All right this is a super nice art museum celebrating 10 years of opening they have free admission for the summer 2015, the place itself its very nice, modern and looks brand new, they have lots of events and shows, great art pieces and sophisticated atmosphere... I should be back every time I can since I'm a Black Hawk college student and I get in for free... this is a must see place if you are in the QC area!!!

Lovely gallery

By Jennifer H |

Lovely gallery to visit while in town. I was there for a private event after hours. They did a great job with the event. The gallery is pleasant and worth a visit. Especially the Lego architecture.

Great activity

By Jeanine Y |

Interesting visit. An issue with the bathroom arose, and while the issue was resolved quickly, I was also told how to fix it myself.
The museum has wheelchairs available for those who need them, and the elevator is huge, but several of the galleries require holding both doors open at the same time. This proved awkward to do with just two people. The volunteer who was sitting at the podium found it amusing, though. I 'd like to suggest getting one of those shiny buttons that you press and the doors open as if by magic.
We were lucky to see the Day of the Dead exhibit and the Art and Activism was much different than the name suggests. Some beautiful pieces to be found.
It's less expensive than a movie ticket and much more enriching and a great way to while away an afternoon.

Outstanding small museum

By Shojin |

Great architecture. Good views of river. Excellent special exhibits (we saw one on Danish furniture). Nice gift shop. Connected with University of Iowa museum and artists. I visit every trip.

An outstanding place to visit

By Lawrence2300 |

This is an incredible museum and a surprising find. Local art is worth reviewing, as are the usual collection of masters. Recommended. Free admission.

Very Impressed

By Kay G |

The French modern exhibit had a line stretching from the 2nd to 3rd floor, I would trying going during the weekday weekends seem very busy especially when there is free admission. There was a lot of regional artists from different countries like Colonial-Mexican, midwestern, the Wild West, European, there was a Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit also, that was exciting.
They provide enough of different types of regional art to get a feel for them, since they cannot display all the art they have at once, and it does change frequently, but can easily spend up to an 1-1/2 to 2 hrs.

Figge and Architecture

By MMM_and_MPM |

The Figge Art Museum, being a wonder of architecture itself, was the perfect venue for "The Art of Architecture," exhibiting Lego architecture models created by Adam Reed Tucker. For the opening of the exhibit, Mr. Tucker gave a talk explaining his story and how he became a creator of LEGO architectural models. We visited the exhibit on the 2nd floor and had fun viewing the models we were most familiar with in Chicago and San Francisco including the John Hancock Building, the Willis Tower, the Trump Tower, the St. Louis Arch, and the Transamerica Pyramid Tower in San Francisco. Also modeled was the worlds tallest tower, the Burj Khalifa consisting of more than 450,000 LEGO bricks standing 17.5 ft tall. Also enjoyed concurrently were the "Mississippi River Views" exhibit on loan from the Muscatine Art Center Collection consisting of 60 paintings, maps and other works dating from 1680 to 1800's to present. Another exhibit from the Figge collection was a spectacular display of exquisite Cameo Stones. These small finely crafted gems were nicely displayed in there own room out for public view for the first time in 40 years. This museum is a treasure for the Quad Cities that is filled with art treasures. Special exhibits change 3 or 4 times a year. The Figge is a friendly and welcoming place and should not be missed.

Very nice visit

By Minneapolisdoyle |

The Figge Art Museum is a much nicer museum than I expected for a city of Davenport’s size. The building is very attractive and functional. The Figge has a wide variety of interesting exhibits but of limited depth. I was surprised to see both a Chagall and Picasso painting. There is a nice Western-era exhibit and also Grant Wood exhibit. There is limited free parking available on-site. There appears to be a museum cafe but it was not open during our visit.

Good day

By Jessie R |

The museum is very large, and has a lot of different exhibits to see. Very good atmosphere, and very clean. It was laid out very well and easy to see everything.

beautiful collection

By WStatesTraveler |

The building has a beautiful architecture. The same qualification can be used for the collection of the works of art inside the building. You will find many styles. Each style is represented by a limited number of works of art. This number is more than sufficient and it allows you to see the entire museum in about 3 hours. I enjoyed in particular: the Mexican Colonial, the American West, the 19th and 20th Century American and the American Scene sections. From the galleries one has a good view of the Mississippi river front.

Great grant wood exhibit

By Charlotte C |

Lots of great art to look at. Museum store had a nice selection of gifts. Enjoyed the grant wood era lithographs and sketches.

Excellent small museum

By Melaniemily |

Visited the museum on the Friday after Thanksgiving -- a great time to go since most other humans were busy shopping. Lovely museum, wonderful setting, well displayed exhibits. This was my 2nd visit with many years in between but I enjoyed it very much. To me, this is a centerpiece of the apparent revitalization of the downtown.

Great Exhibit

By Roundy_13 |

Two exhibits currently at the Museum one suspended balloons with video presentations and the other a wonderful glass landscape which is overwhelming

Gem in the Quad Cities

By Seth C |

The Figge is a 'must see' in Davenport. Great exhibits that change often.

It is a nice way to spend an afternoon and a great place for a date. The bar in the museum is also a nice feature.

Interesting Museum on Davenport Riverfront

By Mark D |

We go periodically to see what is new. The last time we went we saw a special Folk Art display and a movie about the Orphan Trains. I am always astounded at the modern art piece entitled Black. $10 would be to much to pay for this piece. We always get a chuckle when we view this piece. They do have some great art worth seeing. We especially enjoy the Haitian exhibit.

Neat!

By Austinsmawmaw |

Even my husband had a good time and that is saying something! Great exhibits! The people there were super friendly and informative! Will definitely go back!

This little museum is a must see!

By crazyplatter |

Wow. Blown away by the variety and quality of the exhibits at the Figge. Right now there is a textile exhibit that is exquisite. The University of Iowa collection is full of gems, including local artists and even Wright designs. Cute gift shop too. The building itself is modern and offers expansive views of the Mississippi. Only thing missing is a cafe! There is a restaurant, but it wasn't open when we visited this Sunday.

Great Exhibits

By Al H |

They had an exhibit of "Where the Wild Things Are" book and author Maurice Sendak. There were some pop culture exhibits and some great historical paintings.

Pretty Pricey

By Amy M |

If you love art, the price probably doesn't bother you. I would not recommend taking children. Nice displays and interesting art pieces, but not family friendly priced.

What a Charming Museum

By Marjact |

We went to the Figge Art Museum on the Sunday between Christmas and New Year. It was an extremely cold day and so there were not many visitors. But---all the better for us to see the great displays! The special exhibit was about the Artist Works Projects Administration of New Deal in the 1930s. The explanations were terrific! I learned so much but enjoyed the beauty as well. Thank you Figge.

Beautiful Venue

By Paul K |

I had the pleasure of attending a catered supper at Figge Art while on a training trip to the Quad Cities last week. The setting and staff at the museum was great. I would like to visit again during operating hours to see the whole museum.

Nice Museum With A View!

By Lancek43 |

Nice museum and really enjoy the cafe with an excellent view of the Mississippi River. Like to take visitors here to see what Davenport has to offer downtown.

Great collections

By Jana B |

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the permanent collection here. It is a very sophisticated museum for this little city.

Always a Joy!

By vickiossmann44 |

This is one of my favorite places to spend my down time . There is always new exhibits and the employees are always so helpful. I highly recommend a visit!

Davenport must be proud!

By CDRKMP |

This is a world class art museum building. I was privileged to receive a tour just prior to it's opening and I was impressed at the thought and quality that went into construction of this art gallery. It is equipped to handle exhibits on loan from the most famous art galleries. The Figge rotates works from their own collection and brings art on loan from other collections so visitors can see something new each visit. The docents who conduct tours are very knowledgeable.

Make time if there's an exhibit you want to see

By Robin B |

We spent about an hour at this art museum. They have a nice gift shop and some nice art pieces. It isn’t a huge museum, which is nice. We were able to find free street parking about a block away. I was annoyed because the docent wouldn’t allow me to bring in my purse—small a backpack style purse that I wear in front of my body. I have been to hundreds of art museums and never been asked to check my purse. It fit into the slot, but he was heady with the power and wouldn’t budge. I would make time if they have an exhibit you want to see.

A short day in Davenport? Figge should be on your list!

By Kaushik K |

I was off work early and had a couple of hours to spend at Davenport, IA before I had my next flight out if CDR. Chose to visit Figge and it did not disappoint. I am not crazy about art museums in general, but this one kept me hooked for a couple of hours.

Something for everyone!

By Dk C |

Museum consists of many galleries arranged through the building with art displays everywhere including the stairways. Between permanent displays they have other displays on loan so it's never the same ol same ol. Nice gift shop and bar with café tables set out on patios to enjoy the beautiful view of the Mississippi River and Quad Cities' Centennial Bridge. Fun for all.... the Figge hosts many DIY art classes and events even yoga classes every week. Have the kids create their own art work in the art studio where colors, chalk, and even legos abound. Admission prices are fairly reasonable, about 6$ per person but check for free admission events as well as other discounts for seniors, students and military families. Admission is currently free through September 2015 in celebration of the Museums anniversary. Will definitely visit again!

great way to spend a winter afternoon

By Carla F |

This museum had a little bit of everything. We went for the Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit and the Haitian art. We were not disappointed with the Wright exhibit, the few examples of Haitian art were good but a small collection. We enjoyed the College students exhibit and the local artists as well. Museum store has lots of things to look at. Did not try the cafe but will next time. They even had an area for children to create their own art and put it on big refrigerator doors.

Very good regional art museum and a spectacular facility

By mrbillow |

We recently spent a great afternoon at this museum in the Quad Cities. I was most excited about the facility itself, which has a great view of the Mississippi and spacious modern exhibit space. I liked that they built the facility from scratch--it was not a agglomeration of buildings and architects like many museums elect to do, with the resulting confusion of floorplans. We particularly enjoyed the temporary exhibits of William Hawkins (visionary/outsider) and John Bloom (Iowa/regional). Unlike many museums, there was sufficient seating for rests in the galleries. Apparently there was a good surveillance system, because the museum was not filled with bored alienated-looking security. Gift shop was a little fusty and could have used some more edgy, humorous, or even controversial items. We didn't try the restaurant, but the location and view alone should make it worth the visit.

Wide variety of outstanding art

By Penny W |

We attended the Tiffany glass exhibit as well as seeing the rest of the museum. Our docent for your was very knowledgeable and provide excellent background before we even saw the exhibit. I'm was a large group though and a microphone for her would have been helpful. When other employees were asked questions at other exhibits they were also very informative. It is great to be able to see an entire museum in the one day. Parking is vey limited is the only drawback, but worth finding an on street. Place to park.

Worth a visit, though with moderate expectations.

By Lance H |

Not a bad museum, it is worth a visit, but visit with very moderate expectations. When you consider that the University of Iowa's collection is on long term loan, I was expecting more from this collection. There are some decent works, no stars. They did have a few interesting exhibitions, unfortunately, due to a large street fair, I got there later than I planned and was chased out fifteen minutes before the scheduled closing by a rude security officer. So, I really didn't get to enjoy the top floor exhibition. Nice gift shop with very friendly staff.

Upscale Museum for a small town

By Patricia F |

We spent a few hours in this great museum. The exhibit they have right now about the town of Maquoqata is fabulous! Will be there till January. Don't miss it.

Lunch and Dolcent Tour of the French Impressionists!

By Mollie O |

What a delightful afternoon with friends. Had a nice lunch with a glass of wine, toured the exhibit which was so interesting especially with the insights of our Dilcent and friend Linda.
The Figge has a wonderful permanent gallery with a nice regional and Haitian flare. I am most impressed with the variety and diversity of the temporary exhibits which the French Imrwssionist exhibit is.
We love taking our grandchildren there with a scavenger list to find various pieces of art and then spend time creating their own.
Our adult children love going when they are home for a visit. The Figge appeals to all ages. And a short stop at the gift shop is always fun too!

Affordable and reasonably accessable for children.

By boanerges57 |

Often art museums are a little bit of a challenge with children, there is enough of a variety Hera for children to not be totally bored.

Some of the art is decidedly "arty" while other pieces they have here are truly marvelous. Some of the paintings and sculptures here have amazing detail and skill with the material, while others look decidedly like stuff I have on construction paper stuck to the fridge at home.

We enjoyed

By Jill D |

We enjoyed the museum. It is rather small and we went through it in about 1 1/2 hours including the special exhibit we especially wanted to see and the gift shop. The gift shop was quite good. There was a lot of modern art.

Intellectually stimulating and educational

By t0nylist0n |

The Figge offers an opportunity to learn more about the creativity of art in the understanding of it. The staff is very helpful, and they don't seem to mind answering simple questions (at least from an art barbarian like me). 😄

There are many different styles of art to see, and all are presented well and explained in context. Definitely worth a visit.

What a surprise

By Jack V |

We went to a wedding at the museum. Took the time to tour and loved it. Nice, quirky collection. Definitely worth a stop.

Great free activity for the summer

By rustywhims |

They have a great variety of art styles. Wonderful collection. The Tiffany stained glass window was my favorite item. Maybe not the best for little kids but for those a little older it would be a great family activity.

We had coffee in the cafe and it was excellent with delightful staff. Made for a great date.

Nice Museum

By pact51 |

You can't visit Davenport without visiting the Figge Museum. It's spacious and the exhibits were great. A must-stop!

Very Nice Museum

By 445AMY1965 |

Spent a rainy afternoon at The Figge and we totally enjoyed ourselves. Not crowded and they had beautiful works there.

Great Museum!!

By rduinc |

Fabulous museum located on the Mississippi river. Not too big, not too small, just the right size and a nice combination of permanent and traveling collections. The building itself, is beautiful and worth seeing by itself.

Amazing art space with some really cool pieces.

By macsterling |

Very nice museum space in Davenport. My favorite piece was the bronze horse which appeared to be driftwood. There is also a large selection of pieces from Haiti.

Ample parking and easy to get around.

GO BEFORE 9-3-17 - IT's FREE

By John |

This is a wonderful regional art museum in a terrific building with a solid American and European collection at its core, and some very good modern/contemporary works as well. Not a lot of "big" names, but good representations of the major schools/periods.The Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit of furniture and stained-glass is not to be missed. Very good temporary exhibits as well, right now there is an amazing collection of "black dolls." Lots of studio space and activities for kids when I visited as well. While I visited by myself and spent about an hour and a half, one could easily spend 1/2 a day, especially as a family outing. Did I say FREE -Yes, it is Free until 9-3-17

Great Museum!

By Woodsie7 |

We really enjoyed this museum with all of the beautiful exhibits, sculptures and so many different kinds of paintings.
It is definitely one of the better things to do in Davenport.
I do have to make one negative comment because it affected both my husband and I to the point that it left us shaking our heads.
The woman that is in charge of the gift shop and her cohort are extremely rude. Don’t know if they’re burned out or what it is, but their attitudes stink. Maybe it’s time for a replacements.

really opens your eyes

By Jason S |

This is a art muesuem that is very creative with their exhibits. One that I liked was a painting with a completely black surface. At first you think that's all, but when you look closer you see other things.

Worth a visit to see Grant Woods work

By jfadds |

A very nice regional art museum designed by famed British architect David Chipperfield.
They have traveling shows and a permanent collection.
The traveling show now is Vic Muniz who makes art out of garbage and dumpster rubbish and then photographs it—Interesting
Do see the Grant Wood work in the permanent collection- small pieces but powerful

We attended a wedding at the Figge

By Gabbie24 |

We attended a wedding at the Figge for some good friends in June. What a class act this place was! Everything was beautiful (the wedding couple has a big hand in the decorating) but the finishing touches by the the Figge staff was supperb. During the reception the staff was courtious and accomodating as well. I totally reccommend the Figge for your upcoming events.

A museum built to see art

By 2013traveler |

We came because of the fame of the architect, David Chipperfield.
The building allows the art to shine. Frank Lloyd Wright, Grant Wood, Tiffany, and Audubon are some of the highlights. We "caught" the temporary fiber arts exhibit that was first class. Arturo Sandoval, Geary Jones, Lize Aviks, Karen Hampton, Tom Lundberg, Amy Clarke Moore; their fiber work is world class. The staircases, the hallways, the children's area, are all meant to give you space to breathe in between art works. Had the bar been open I would have sat and had a drink and gazed at the river. It looked most alluring, with its red highlights, saying visit me.
It was well worth the trip. I was very impressed with both the outside and inside of the building and the art work as well.

World Class Art Galery

By riverdragonfly4150 |

Since I live in Davenport if I need a gift in a hurry I go to the gift shop here, it’s magic.
I spoke to Figge before he died, his dream was to give back to the city that gave so much to him.
World Class Art, it’s amazing.

Figge Art Museum is art museum is so much fun to visit. Visiting is free for locals on Thursdays. Figge Art Museum is a staple activity for me in Davenport.

Incredible

By Kyle R |

Always a great visit. Love all the creativity thru out the whole museum and always has new exhibit when we visit.

Wonderful Small Museum

By UKbanker33 |

Had stopped in Davenport just to visit the Figge. Free in the summer, which was a great bonus. Very respectable general collection, jewel-like Grant Wood-themed room and excellent exhibit of American art on "paper" on loan for the summer. Convenient that I could park right in front for free. Custom built building with Mississippi River views is fabulous.

Great experience

By kmbrown021393 |

My husband and I stopped at the Figge and really enjoyed the experience. The facility is exceptional and the exhibits were varied/interesting.

A lovely museum! You don't need all day to visit...just a nice spot for an afternoon or morning. Lovely location by the river too.

A wonderful surprise!

By romanticroam |

A wonderful little gem of a museum with a nice permanent collection, and some exciting special exhibitions. Great gift shop and beautiful building.

A premier Midwestern museum!

By Leslie B |

I live in Davenport, the hometown of the Figge Art Museum. My first visit to the Figge was to see the cement floor, exposed HVAC and unwalled spaces early in its construction. I've attended hundreds of events, show openings, films, lectures etc. at this glorious place and the quality is uniformly amazing. The permanent collection, while not encyclopedic, is attractive and has many exciting collections (Haitian, Mexican Colonial, Frank Lloyd Wright and others) that are always complemented by several traveling shows of excellent quality. You meet the nicest, most enthusiastic and knowledgable people at the Figge. There's something for everyone—for the practicing professional artist to the toddler. A guaranteed enriching time.

Figge Never Fails ...

By JMCSTL |

... to impress & surprise with its special exhibitions. My wife & I rarely miss a chance for a pop in for an hour or two at the Figge Art Museum when we're in the Quad Cities. This visit our primary interest was the private Driehaus Collection of a variety of Tiffany glass items (lamps, windows, vases, etc.), which was worth the price of admission alone. But the bonus this time was on the third floor, an amazing exhibition of "landscape photography" by engineer/photographer Kim Keever. Keever creates miniature landscape & atmospheric effect dioramas inside a 200-gallon water tank, then lights & photographs them to create incredibly realistic images that could easily pass as real-life parts of nature. Tough to photograph the photographs in the exhibit space, but an awesome collection to view & appreciate in person.

We always find free parking on weekends on the Second Street plaza near the museum's main entrance, and the seniors or Triple-A or other special discounts save us a few bucks on each memorable visit. Don't let the largely unadorned first floor spaces or the relatively small size of the exhibition areas fool you, because the three upper floors of the Figge are always filled with unusual art worth viewing & enjoying & learning about.

The Figge is Fantastic!

By akz1950 |

We enjoyed our day at the Figge Art Museum with two handicapped individuals and were easily accommodated. It is well organized and fun to view the art.

One of the midwest's best keep secrets!

By Jeff S |

Nobody ever mentions Davenport, Iowa in conversations about fine arts . . . unless they have been to the Figge. This place is a top notch gallery with a collection that is so diverse. The moving exhibition during my visit was the French Moderns. That is where we thought the journey would end.But then we explored the Figge Collection. Rembrandt, Renoir, Dali, Picasso, Grant Wood, Warhol . .What? That was impressive enough but my biggest surprise was the massive collection of Haitian Art! I've never seen the magnificent techniques of Haitian artists before. And just as impressive is the gorgeous facility that overlooks the Mississippi River. I've been to a multitude of Art Galleries and I would rank this one in my top 3 of favorites (sorry . .had to give Chicago and The Louvre the first two spots ). But for staff knowledge and service , The Figge beats them all! Really Art lovers . plan your trip.

First time at the Figge

By Ellen R |

I wasn't sure what to expect from this museum, but I was pleasantly surprised. There were several traveling exhibits, but the one I liked best was called "Picturing the Prairie" about the tall grass prairie that used to cover parts of Iowa. It included videos and bird calls, along with photographs and other hands-on materials. The museum also houses permanent collections of Grant Wood paintings and Frank Lloyd Wright furniture. Check the website for information about current exhibits. Also has a great gift store.

Its ok, for Iowa it's great.

By roadstrainsplanes |

This museum makes a legitimate effort. If you're expecting the Met or MoMA you will be disappointed. The building was built for exhibit and was a great choice. A large area is designated for the university art students, its ok... felt like filler. The fine art area was excellent. I suggest going, but have realistic expectation for where its located.

Nice collection

By Mike K |

I enjoyed my visit very much. The collection is large and varied. When I was there, the University of Iowa art collection was being housed there as well. The only complaint I had was that it doesn't flow very well from room to room. I think I missed some stuff.

French Moderns and extras

By pat f |

The French Moderns exhibit is great but the auxiliary events; presentations about painters, authors, music of the time and issues add so much more. Luckily I live in Davenport and can attend many of these events. The Morisot presentation at Butterworth Center on 10/21 and the Nazi Looted Art at German Heritage Center on 10/22 were fantastic. Both were overflow crowds. No one left early. What an opportunity. Hope events of this type continue after exhibit closes.

Fun, diverse

By Joe G |

So many different themes, all award winning,
Frank Loyd Wright display so good. Great view of river.

Wonderful Art Museum

By visitante252016 |

This is a wonderful museum. We traveled from Decatur, IL, to visit it.
Currently there is an amazing art exhibit of an artist from Haiti.
The permanent collection is great as well.
The personnel is very kind, specially Maria (from Spain).

Interesting well-displayed exhibits

By dekalbill |

Visited Figge Museum on a Thursday evening as it was the only time in our schedule, What a surprise to find the admission was free, parking easy and inside a very good museum, We had the opportunity to participate in the reception for a new exhibit and listen to the artist introduce her new exhibit. Permanent exhibits are well displayed. This museum is worth a visit.

Well worth visiting

By irishuscouple |

Davenport’s art collection in a fine new building by the Mississippi (with cafe overlooking) has a number of interesting works, both American and European. Grant Wood, and some colleagues of his, figure, as does Frank Lloyd Wright in a section on architectural details. Warm welcome from staff, and use being made of the space by school groups etc- which is good to see.

I appreciated visiting this art museum on a hot day in downtown and disappointing Davenport, IA.

The museum, which has four floors of displays, has a lot of what you would expect for a small, depressed and uneventful city art museum.

I was impressed with the exterior architecture and how it was laid out inside. There is a great view of the Mississippi from the second floor. The dining facility and bar, were closed to the public for a private event.

So, if you are bored to tears, as you will be if you visit this sad downtown, the art museum is a must. It is free through the end of August. I am not certain I would have paid to visit it.

Great Museum for a Midwestern Town

By Travelmaint |

This was our first visit to the Figge Museum, and we were extremely impressed! To start with, our admission was free (for a limited time)! There was a nice variety of exhibits, which included some big name artists. The entire facility was clean and spacious, and the staff were very polite and attentive. Davenport is very fortunate to have such a fine museum.

Great exhibits

Visit here for the special exhibits as well as the standard fare. Enjoy the riverside, stop nearby for a meal and have a day out.

Big city museum in a small town

By jfadds |

How lucky for Davenport to have such a wonderful museum- much larger cities are envious.
The museum had both a permanent collection that is growing and always a traveling show to view. So always worth a stop to see what is on.

Don’t miss this gem

Good value, wonderful exhibits.

By kwshannon |

We visited while in the Quad Cities. Riverfront views, and great exhibits made it a fun stop. Recommend this if you have a couple of days in QC to see local art.

Pleasantly surprised

By Moosenearchicago0 |

It is a very new, large building with many great exhibits. There was even a Chagall! A lot by Grant Wood, of American Gothic fame. I thought this industrial city on the Mississippi would be void of art but was very pleasantly surprised.

Great exhibits!

By 5nn |

This is a museum well worth visiting if you are in the area. The building itself is an art with dramatic views of the Mississippi River. There is a strong permanent collection as well as rotating exhibits. Several of the exhibits are a tied to the local history/region.They also have art programs for children and adults.

Beautiful Museum - Small Exhibits

By Lindsey A |

The museum itself is well maintained, beautiful, and in a great location. However, the exhibits are small. Floor 4 had barely anything to it. A few wall pictures some of which were inappropriate for children. Floor 3 was the same with a few hanging pieces of friut art work. Floor 2 had a lot going on. Lots of beautiful paintings and a section for children. Floor 2 was by far our favorite floor beings we went with children agest 2, 8, and 16. But there still was not enough to kep them interested. Unfortunatly this museum has a lot of space that is not being properly utilized. I would like to see them get more exhibits and grow into its name.

Memories Made

By Caressa R |

My nieces wedding recpetion was held here and it was a beautiful space. It was a little odd to enter right into the reception area but the decorations were perfect. The wall of windows created an amazing backdrop to the festivities.

" Very Nice Educational Art Museum "

By David Miller |

We went to the Figge Art Museum and viewed a wide range of Artwork. You can easily spend 2 to 3 hours here going thru the multiple floors of Artwork. They also have a nice John Deere Theater where you can watch historical films. They have a children's Art center where teachers are working with students in classes. They also have a Bar and Food service area for your pleasure in the Museum. They have famous Artist works, local Artist exhibits, and always some Traveling Artist shows. This Figge Art Museum is definitely a must see in Davenport, Iowa.

Nice Regional Collections but....

By Stephen L |

This has nice collections of Regionalists, Haitian art, colonial era Mexican stuff. The Frank Lloyd Wright furniture is nice as well. A bit of a prudish collection, missing anything related to eroticism and romance.

By Molson30 |

The museum is well thought out and has a variety of exhibits that can occupy you for hours. therein something for everyone regardless of their tastes (or lack of). The Regionalism display is amazing and a must see.

I really enjoyed the cartographic exhibit that was on display.

Deserves more visits!

By IowaWoman123 |

The musuem is beautiful, with a view of the Mississippi and the contents did not disappoint us. There was a wonderful exhibit of antique maps when we were there and then we viewed American artists works. My husband liked the Grant Wood and thought the Chagall painting was wonderful. We both appreciated the paintings of the West by various artists and the Remington sculptures were wonderful. My only request is that they cut back on the cleaning fluids as the lemon smell gagged me and holding onto the banister left my hand covered with oil! We will go again.

Enjoyed

By N0rmalee |

A large museum with art by Picasso, Grant Wood, Childe Hassam Etc., some sculptures. Day of the Dead exhibit. $6 for seniors.

Love the art and building!!!

By A H |

What a great place for art lovers! This place has amazing pieces and is a great place for one of a kind wedding receptions!

Good Exhibitions

By 424lianas |

This is a medium size museum, with a nice permanent collection. The exhibits are well done, and they do a nice job of integrating loaned pieces with their collection. Wonderful gift shop. Looks like they have a nice bar/cafe area although we have not tried it. Pretty building with free parking on site.

100 Masterworks of Edward Curtis

By Vasanti J |

A great museum in such a small city. Curtis's unique photographs give a rare glimpse into the lives of many a Native American tribe.

Typical art museum

By Peg C |

The building itself is cool, interesting. It's easy to get to in center of the city and parking is free. They have rotating collections. We enjoyed our visit, but were surprised by how few items they actually had..it's not chock full of art like some museums.

Love our local Figge Art Museum

By 874georgiab |

What a lovely addition to our riverfront town of Davenport, Iowa! Beautiful works of art are displayed in many forms. There is always many displays that are on loan from other museums being displayed throughout the year. Everyone, even if you are not an art fanatic, you will find yourself enjoying yourself.

Casual Visit

By Gaurav J |

With a good architectural building this museum seems to have one of the best permanent collections with some unique design products of early modern period. Though i am not a fan of museums, I liked Figge's collection.

lovely gem of a museum

By Chicagotraveler1956 |

this is a must if you visit davenport. We enjoyed the full-service bar and the food was excellent. The artwork was curated in such a creative and interesting way. The use of negative space is wonderful in this must-see museum.

Fine Art

Daughter was in town and she loves art. We went to the museum and was surprised for a somewhat of a small town it had a lot to offer. We enjoyed all the different displays and was glad we took time to visit. The workers were knowledgable.

Small gem of a museum

By STPtraveler01 |

We drove from Minnesota to Davenport, IA to view a special art exhibit drawn from the collection of the Brooklyn Museum -- French Moderns, Monet to Matisse -- that is not scheduled to visit the Twin Cities. What a pleasant surprise. 60 pieces of paintings and sculpture, divided into themes, occupied an entire floor of the museum. The exhibit was well-planned with interesting explanations that accompanied each themed area. It was worth the trip down just to see this exhibit, but there were several other special exhibits that we also enjoyed, plus the permanent exhibit rooms on the 2nd floor. This smaller museum does an excellent job showcasing a wide range of art and artists. A must see when you're in the Quad Cities area.

Nice place to visit

By YayaShare |

The Figge has a small, but nice collection. The children's rooms are the highlight and these are done really well. Definitely worth a visit when in the Quad Cities.

Love the Art

By Teresa L |

This is our favorite home town museum!! There are always new things to see and experience! We like to spend a Sunday afternoon there every once in awhile. Also the gift shop is one a kind! If you want to find something you can't find elsewhere, that is the place. If your in the Quad Cities don't miss a stop at the Figge!!

Tiffany exhibit!

By joaniemaria |

Visited the Tiffany exhibit. Lovely! Go if you have the chance. Also, take a look at the Kim Keever photos on the fourth floor. They are very interesting and thought provoking. Be sure to look at the Amphora pottery exhibit on the second floor. It is a nice display. I always like to look at the Grant Wood art displayed in the museum, too. We ate at the Figge Cafe. It was very good. I had the Apple Chopped Salad. It is delicious and large. If you are a senior, you can visit the first Thursday of the month and get free admission to the museum. You can also get a 10% discount at the museum store and the cafe. Just be sure to mention it. The Figge is indeed a jewel of Davenport. Go and visit!

Breath taking!

By Billypooler |

I recently visited thevFigge Museum in Davenport Iowa. The frozen forest exhibit is absolutely stunning and the views from the top floor are second to none in the city!
I visited this alone and expected to be outside within 15 minutes. Instead, I found myself drawn deeper and deeper into each exhibit.
Having spent a whole day there, I would strongly recommend that anyone visiting Davenport take time out to trul enrich their soul.

Spacious but a bit disappointing.

By Aspenvail22 |

Spacious and the gift shop interesting but was limited in displays. we personally didn't feel it was worth the time.

I Digge the Figge

By jojofrance2009 |

Of course, the biggest piece of art at the Figge is the building itself. We spent quite a while admiring the sunlight sparkling across the Mississippi through the screens. While not entirely dazzled by the permanent collection itself, we were very much wowed by the WPA Art Exhibit, with discovery after discovery of American art work commissioned in 1934. It was just stunning, and we were thrilled to be able to purchase a catalog of the exhibit in the gift shop.

On the whole, a very enjoyable experience. Bravo Davenport!

Wizard of Oz

By Chuck H |

Good collection of a variety of art. We wne in September when there was no admission charge, so it was a great value!

Pleasant surprise - must see if you are in Quad Cities

By Stephen P |

There was little to do after my meeting was over on a Saturday late afternoon so I stopped by the Figge with a business colleague. We were so pleasantly surprised. First of all the architecture of the building is striking. Then we discovered that they had a art show from our own state's Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. The quality of the art and its presentation was quite good. Like many art museums in smaller markets there were a few different activities for children and displays of local art by children. This was quite nice.

Much to our surprise there was no admission fee and the lockers to store ones bags had locks and were also free.

Wow... I didn't know...

By Aimdog |

I'd heard about the Figge Art Museum before but had just not taken the time to visit. I live about an hour and a half away from Davenport, so when I make the trip, it's usually to shop. I finally decided to go when my college student daughter was home for spring break and was assigned to visit a museum for one of her classes. I was blown away. I didn't realize the quality of the art they had or how nice the museum itself was. It was also nice to see how many people were there. We went on a Thursday evening when the admission is free (after 5:00) and spent a little over 2 hours there. We easily could have stayed longer, there was so much to see. I also think the descriptions of the pieces of art are very well done... not so long that you can't read through them quickly, but still including enough information to be interesting and informative. We'll definitely go back.

Surprisingly nice

By LVBcacher |

The Figge has quite a collection for a small town art museum. The temporary exhibits are usually interesting as well, with a mix of local and youth talent as well as more well know artists.

Nice collection for size of museum

By Karen W |

We recently visited specifically to see a special exhibition (French Moderns). That exhibition was very enjoyable, with artwork we are not likely to see unless we travel to Brooklyn (where most of it came from). While there, we also took in another special exhibition of William L. Hawkins, a new artist for me, as well as the museum's permanent collection.

The museum is reasonably priced, with discounts for students and seniors. Check their web page for other discounts and specials, such as a Bank of America free Saturday for cardholders.

The museum apparently has a cafe, but it was not open when we visited. They were setting up for a special event instead.

The family room looked like fun for families. When we take our grandchildren to the art museum near our home, they always like make a project in the family room.

Great museum

By melindajirwin |

So the Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit drew me in, but it truly is an amazing museum for a town if this size. I highly recommend spending an hour or two here if you have time.

Ever time I visit the Figge Art Museum, there is always something spectacular to view.

By patcherry4117 |

I took my husband to the Figgi so he could view Rose Frandsen’s “Portraits of Maquoketa” before it went on tour again. We were not disappointed. The exhibit was spectacular, to put it mildly. There were other wonderful things to view that day also. I love everything about the Figgi. On the first Thursday of each month, they have Senior Citizens day were Seniors get in free. They also have guided tours for the Seniors. I recommend this for the entire family, young or old.

Big Time Art Museum in Small Time Location

By Seldom-seen-schultz |

There is no better feeling than a chance discovery of a world class art museum in the least expected place. Don't take that wrong Davenport, we still love you, but mercy me! Once inside, you might as well be at the MOMA or the Whitney and I've been to both so I can say that with confidence. We didn't know the place existed but always look for a gallery on our way to our spring break destination city (this time St. Loius), and just like our chance encounter with Cedarhurst Center the Arts a couple year back, providence was smiling down upon us. Our kids, now 12 and 15, have also been to the major galleries and having seen Starry Night and Monet's gardens, it's hard to get them excited about galleries, but they loved this place. Not so monstrous you have to pace yourself for fear of sensory overload and yet not so sparse you feel cheated. For a town this size to host a museum of this caliber is nothing short of extraordiay and hy had is off to the major stakeholders who pulled it off after a decade of heavy duty fundraising. Good on ya! FOR THE REST OF YOU, don't even think about skipping it if you find yourself passing through!

Nice

By Brett G |

Very nice, had lots of great art. Even has free months, which is nice. They get new art in every now and then to keep it fresh.

Definitely worth a visit

By letsgotochina |

The Figge is a very nice museum and well worth a visit if one is in the Quad-Cities area. Parking was plentiful and inexpensive the summer weekday that I was there. There was a special exhibit from the Wadsworth Atheneum is Hartford, Connecticut that was exceptional. I was also impressed by the Figge's own permanent collection that was on display.

Figge is a jewel!

By hearteacher |

This art museum has a fabulous permanent collection that they rotate through on occasion. They feature young artists, contemporary artists an interesting themed exhibit. Their Children’s Gallery is full of interactive exhibits that I’ve had to pull my grand kids out of because they were so involved. They have an excellent education program that includes classes for young children through adults and some college classes. They have a continuing list of social events and many lectures offered by experts and varied art fields. It’s an inexpensive admission for a Day of fascination.

Everything you would expect from a museum!

By Patrick C |

We stopped here on a day trip to Davenport. It was rated by TripAdvisor as one of the top attractions in the area. This is a good activity when weather is questionable. The museum can take several hours if you tour each room and appreciate the variety of art. They have plenty of paintings and sculptures and a few interactive things for kids (or kids-at-heart). Nothing blew us away but we were glad we went!

Great art

By ZooeyIowa |

The Figge is a beautiful building with a great ongoing selection of exhibits. Really worth a stop, and the shop is great.

A secret jewel

By nbfromcalifornia |

It's a beautiful building at the edge of the Mississippi. I was impress with their extensive collection, over 4000 works of art.. Promise you won't be disappointed.

Figge Art Museum

By WaucondaDavid |

During a recent trip to the Quad Cities, we visited the Figge for a second time. Although its collection is not huge, it is diverse, varying from the traditional European works to Modern American, and folk art, with special emphasis on the genius of Grant Wood, Iowa's most famous son in the art world. Their Grant Wood display alone is worth the visit! The building itself is very spacious, well lit, and airy, and you can park (for free!) mere feet from the front door; handicapped access is superb throughout. Two characteristics merit special mention: the highly informative signage that gives useful and interesting background information for the individual artworks on display (among the very best I have seen ANYWHERE), and their beautiful gift shop--the decorative art pieces available in there are truly exquisite. Go check it out!

Impressionist

By 826gordong |

Was in Davenport to see the Impressionist exhibit at the Figge. Tightly curated collection from the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Community sponsors unexpectedly covered admission fees while we were there. Overall a small, interesting local museum with a nice collection of regional art and a nice visiting exhibition. Very pleasant couple of hours was spent there.

Great place for the family

By RCW |

If you looking for a nice place to take the family in the QC, Figge is a great place to begin. Always check to see what the have on exhibit weather it's something visiting for a short time, or the museum's full time exhibits.
Go and enjoy!

Had the place to ourselves!

By SmokeyBlueTulle |

We visited on a mid-December Saturday afternoon and literally had the place to ourselves!

The exhibits were largely centered around religion, though there were some exceptions. The collections included interesting glass sculpture with video, furniture and housewares, as well as your standard photos, paintings and drawings.

The space was vast, but we were hoping for edgy. There is some of that, but the day we visited there were far more standard works.

It was nice to see some artwork by the masters: Picasso, Chagall, and others.

It’s definitely worth a stop for any art lover.

They have an amazing gallery to celebrate Dia De los Muertos in the kids section. They clearly have art education done right!!!

Amazing

By Rich M |

We have been there several times and they have always have a super collection of art work....This time was especially good because they had on display a wonderful collection of Wizard of Oz memorabilia.

Wonderful Place for Art, Excellent Place for Lunch

By wolfcookie |

We attended the French Moderns: Monet to Matisse, 1850-1950 and William Hawkins: An Imaginative Geography exhibits. Excellent. Well thought out exhibits and easy to access. Prior to taking in the exhibits we ate at the Figge Cafe for the first time. Food was outstanding, as was the service and the view of the Mississippi River.

art

By Shirley B |

When I checked the internet about visiting the museum, the site said that it was museum week and so their was no fee to go thru the museum. When we got there, we were charged a fee, buy one ticket, get one free. I asked about what the internet said they said only if you had a card from the library. We still went in and enjoyed our visit and saw a lot of interesting art.

A nice way to spend an afternoon

By Kevin d |

I went in the end of September while it was still free, so I can't speak to value, but they had some nice traveling exhibits of art on paper. The travelling exhibit took up 2 floors, and was a nice view. The standard exhibits are nice also. It was well attended, and there was no rush. A suitable atmosphere for viewing and appreciating the arts.

Very Cool

By TrishaMarie80 |

The museum has a lot of neat art collections. Some are permanent and others rotate. There are also different art programs for adults and children.

Free for the Summer

By Jan D |

This is a really nice museum, and admission is free through the summer. Special exhibition included "Everything that is Wizard of Oz." Also great black and white David Plowdon photo exhibition along with many other beautiful works of art. The place is large and spacious and not too overcrowded with tourists. They have a lovely upscale cafe that serves a nice selection of soups, sandwiches and salads. If in the area, it is definitely worth a stop. We loved it!

The Figge

By Carla B |

A wonderful museum overlooking the Mississippi River with a fantastic and impressive collection for it's size. When you tire of walking there are several places to rest along with seating looking over the river into Illinois.

Somewhat disappointed

By MJO1970 |

We went to view the French Modernist art exhibit. Was disappointed in it. The advertised Monet and Manet. There was only one of each. A few Renoir and the rest were very obscure artists. The John Bloom "Close to Home" was much more interesting and I really enjoyed that exhibit.

More at the FIgge than you think.

By mikemN6560YR |

I noticed the Bertoia Diamond chairs in the lobby and found also a Bertoia sculpture. The Grant Wood archives are there. The every changing galleries and classes for all ages.

Great museum

By Hajro I |

Beautiful museum. Very cheap to get inn. Great food inside and always changing exhibits. Good for families and tourists.

A fine small art museum

By Don M |

We were very impressed with the lay-out and art. A couple of Picassos, Miro, and other modern masters (not our style but very good) Many Haiti paintings. Five Grant Wood with some memorabilia from Grant Wood's sister, nice old world 15th century Dutch, section on Frank Lloyd Wright, a Moran, a Bierstadt, a Russell.

The architecture, river views and broad spectrum of artistic genres make this museum a destination.

By FollowYourArt |

FIGGE was everything i had hoped it would be and more. Each gallery has its own unique ambience and the collections and exhibits, both permanent and temporary are richly rewarding to see. There is work by local/regional artists as well as diverse national and international individuals and groups. The hands-on areas for children and families are rife with engaging projects and activities. The gift shop carries a wonderful selection of items and every staff member i encountered was friendly and helpful. I wish i lived closer to this museum so i could go there often.

Wonderful!

By jbedfordd |

Haven't been here in a couple years but what a treat. Exhibits that will entertain youth and those for adults or art students.
There is a play space for kids where they can create thing to take home.
An extensive permanent exhibit and several seasonal displays.
And plan on eating lunch at the cafe. Incredible food for a reasonable cost. As you'd expect, even the silverware is artful.
Crafty soups and artistic sandwiches. The wait staff even had delightfully done eye makeup.
I like the little things that are likely unintentional, but every piece of the puzzle adds to the total picture.

Beautiful Museum

By Hajro I |

Went here withbthe wife. Its an amazing museum for kids and families and adults. Not expensive at all, and they have employer deals. Loys of diffrent things to see here every month.

Excellent museum

By mja1982 |

A great museum for a small town. The architecture is great and they have both a nice permanent collection and rotating shows. We saw the Folk Art show from the museum in New York and it looked great in their space. The permanent collection space isn't huge but they have some really nice pieces. The gift shop is great and really well done. This museum is worth the trip.

A great art collection in a small river town in Iowa

By Richard S |

This was my first time to the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, Iowa. There are 4 floor of art, but I concentrated on the collections on the second floor. There are paintings by Miro and other recognizable artists - and a more extensive collection of works by Iowa Artists. I enjoyed the Grant Wood section very much. I also noted 2 pieces by Virginia Meyers - an artist from the University of Iowa who passed away recently. There is a display of work from Frank Lloyd Wright - including lead glass doors and a desk from the Johnson Wax building.
The building is attractive and the floors are served by an elevator. I plan to return.

A nice art museum

By Nancy A |

The Figge is a very nice museum, especially for a city the size of Davenport. The gift shop was wonderful with some beautiful things that were not too expensive.

Did not view art. Posters from world war one is hardly art.

By George P |

I have visited many art museums and galleries in U.S and Europe. This was a Figgen dissapointment! The only things painted by humans was a gallery from grade school children. Cute on the fridge, but hardly worth the price of admission!

Group tour presentation in large theater room.

By L K |

Enjoyed a group presentation in the large theater on the second floor of the museum. Great acoustic and large white wall for power point presentation. Gift shop has a variety of unique items for one of a kind gifts. Definitely worth a visit!

Nice rainy day diversion

By ALLSLC |

Nothing to do since it was rainy so went to the art museum. Nice gift shop. Tickets are reasonable with a college student discount that was nice. 3 floors of exhibits, not huge but nice things to look at. We spent about an hour because we had to go to the airport, could have slowed down a little and maybe spent a couple of hours.

Wonderful Museum for a Great Price

By David Q |

Only paid $7 to enter the museum and found it to have a great array of art to enjoy. Actually didn't intend to visit but found myself walking by, liked the architecture of the exterior and continued to the interior. Spent a few hours of the afternoon enjoying the museum. Perfect size and great price. Easy to see everything in 2-3 hours time.

wonderful collection

By tamiwhammy |

The Figge museum is a treasure. The building is awesome and the collection is wonderful. they have some really nice pieces. There are some great international works: a Picasso, and my favorite Bierstadt. There's a whole room for Grant Wood. Also some Frank Lloyd Wright furnishings. I also enjoyed the cafe. I spent a very enjoyable few hours here. I highly recommend it.

Ok but a little pricey

By Lisa D |

We live here and have only been once. It's ok, but a little pricey, I've been in much better art museums for less or free.

World class traveling exhibits

By Cosette T |

The Figge has a strong permanent collection but where they really excel are the special exhibits they bring in to supplement what's there all the time. As such, at least once a quarter, there is something new to see. I especially loved the recent John Bloom, French masterpieces, and Tiffany glass exhibits. The building itself is also beautiful with a great view of the Mississippi River.

Ecclectic

By Cheryl B |

Great selection and affordable. Something for everyone. Frank Lloyd Wright furniture is exceptional and the early Latin American Exhibit is excellent. It's quiet and you never feel like you have to keep on moving. You can explore at your own pace.

A nice change of pace

By Guy R |

The Figge has some impressive works and is very easy to get around. If you want a pleasant change of pace or it's a rainy day, don't pass this up.

A nice Museum

By Suzanne C |

A great museum with lots of different exhibits that are changing. I went to the Lego Building exhibit and it was incredible. Afterwards browsed the art there - which I always enjoy seeing. Staff is very friendly and helpful

The area with really old paintings is really cool

By Maggie |

There is a section in the museum that has very very old paintings and they are gorgeous. The newer sections with some of the winners makes you scratch your head on judges as some of them are just terrible. Also they have a painting of just a black canvas which is apparently art... Um no. Anyway its not worth the money to see so go on a free day. Also unless you have hundreds to thousands of dollars to spend.. Don't even browse the gift shop.

Best Museum in the Quad Cities

By RobBDavenport |

Not a huge art museum, but high quality. If you visit or live in the Quad Cities area, you should pay this museum a visit. Nice collection of Midwestern artists, including Wood and Benton. The temporary exhibitions vary, but are often well worth it. Collections of original, significant works are organized well, with very good interpretive cards. The Haitian art collection may be one of the most extensive ones of its kind in the US. There are activities for children, a cafe and a nice overlook of the Mississippi River. Check the museum website for upcoming exhibitions if you're planning a visit.

French Friday

By Brit S |

Had a French themed dinner in the cafe followed by a tour of the museum, it was lovely! The food was mediocre but had a good experience and the view from the cafe was gorgeous until they pulled the shades.

Nice museum, big amount of paintings and sculptures.

By Sockdrawer |

Stopped in for a break between youth sporting events. A big selection of paintings to view, and interactive stuff for the kids. Lots of stairs to walk off a meal, take the huge elevator back down after you get to the top floor.

An excellent art museum

By farleer |

I've been to a lot of art museums--the Hermitage, the Met, etc. The collection at the Figge doesn't rival some of those, but it's one of the best curated museums I can remember. It held my interest with some classic European art, plus really well-done American and Haitian exhibits. I'm recommending it to my friends!

Great Art

By wkuhrt824762 |

This is an excellent museum. I was quite impressed with their collection. There is a beautiful view of the Mississippi from the upper levels, which you will want to see! The gift shop was very nice, and the prices were reasonable

Fine art museum; worth a couple of hours

By Arun P |

If you are visiting Quad Cities, then spending a couple of hours at the Figgie is a good use of time for art-minded folks.

Excellent Art, worth stopping

By usatraveler5556_13 |

This art museum has an incredible aray of quality pieces in every form in their collection. They also display new and exciting rotating exhibits that make every visit new. Fun drawing and creative center for children as well. Great view of the Mississippi from the 3rd floor Winter garden too. Enjoy!

Fabulous yet smaller art museum. Great restaurant overlooking Mississippi River

By grammytoyou |

I had a huge fresh salad at the museum
Overlooking a great view of the Mississippi River. If you are downtown, stop here for lunch— don’t need to pay museum fee.
Large freshly made sandwiches too.

The museum is not large but has a nice selection including Monet, Tiffany, Frank Lloyd Wright, modern art as well as sculpture. I found parking on site.

Gem of the Quad-Cities

If you haven't been to the Figge Art Museum, you have missed out on a world class art collection and facility. Plus the Figge has a wonderful gift shop, a first-class restaurant and great classes.

Second stop after Miss Mamie's

By MsAllFiftyStates |

After eating a wonderful lunch, we looked for something close to walk off the calories. The Figge is perfect to exercise and learn about art. We spent almost 4 hours admiring the artist and their work. My favorite piece is Half Moon. It is remarkable. My second favorite is Cornflower. Both of them spoke to my soul and the wonders of creation. The first display I saw was the corn. It made me laugh because a friend told me all I would see is corn fields in Iowa. Iowa is one of the 8 remaining states for my husband and I to explore. We have enjoyed our visit thus far.

A Beautiful Building

Wonderful modern art building with cool exhibits. Meant to review this earlier. If you're into art, and have to go to Davenport, it may be your saving grace.

I actually went to hear a speaker on photography. Facility was excellent. It just happened to be open for children that evening and many kids were creating crafts. The place is amazing

Excellent collection and goft shop

By Wandering Mel |

I truly enjoyed the permanent collection, but the temporary ones were breathtaking in their perspective and diversity. The Portrait of Maquoketa was fascinating and is a must see. Thank you for showcasing it! The collection of pieces by local art students was also wonderful. Thank you!

A very noisy museum experience. No thanks!

By CA Valley Girl |

Absolutely did not appreciate the "break the silence" traveling exhibit we encountered today at the Figge Museum. As the sign reads, traditionally, museums are seen as quiet, reverent places ... we believe that is for a good reason. Hard to be still and reflective with your thoughts, interpretations and feelings whilst viewing artworks when it's so awfully loud. Random loud instruments seemed to encourage loud visitor's voices. So sorry we didn't read up on Figge's current offerings before we visited today.

By Big-Steve-Smith |

imagine if you will the Vatican's Pieta, and instead of Jesus in his mother's arms, it's a fat Elvis complete with semi-precious jewels, blue jumpsuit, and a double chin made by pork. That was worth seeing in a museum (thank you, ladies and germs, thank you so much).

Not huge, but a very nice art museum

By Steve R |

If you are looking for an art museum, but don't want to spend all day there, the Figge Art Museum should fill the bill. On the day we visited, it was uncrowded, and the atmosphere was pleasant and unhurried, so we were able to see it all in about two hours. Favorite exhibit for us: the Grant Wood room. Wide variety of artists in well-lit rooms. And a friendly staff all the way through.
Note: All exhibits were free when we visited, but ordinarily there is a n entrance fee. It is worth the fee. You might want to give them a call first, if that is an issue.

Excellent special exhibits

By CynthiainChicago |

Love the Edward Curtis photo exhibit and the featured rooms to FL Wright and Grant Wood. Love the space and layout. Great little art museum

It was dinner only for us

By Lynn S |

While on a business trip, we had a special dinner (for my company) that evening. We did not have access to seeing the museum but the food was fantastic and the bartenders poured some excellent drinks!

Wonderful local museum

By CubsFan-TA |

Located on the banks of the Mississippi River and in Downtown Davenport is a true gem of a museum. The Figge Museum is multiple floors of art, much a revolving exhibit from nationwide museums. There is a large section dedicated to local history and artists. There is a gift shop and restaurant located on the first floor. Love the outdoor seating with a view of the river. Great for the entire family.

Figge is outstanding. What an incredible building in Downtown Davenport. Staff was very nice

By Dmdm10 |

This is a great gem in the quad cities. John Bloom exhibit was nice, the Impressionists exhibit was first class and I was amazed they had found someone to underwrite the admission price to make sure everyone could see art. You won’t find this hospitality in big cities. Thanks

Figge museum

Amazing museum. They had a lot of amazing pieces. I try to go to the Figge everytime I am in town. They usually get some really cool traveling displays. Definitely worth the trip to downtown Davenport.

If you love modern art this is the place for you

By Imelda49 |

We were on a river cruise which stopped in the Quad-City area. Stop number one was the Figge Art Museum where the American Moderns on Paper was the highlighted exhibit.

We are not connoisseurs of modern art—in fact we find it meaningless, so I can’t speak to the merit of the exhibit. I can say that the only piece we saw which we liked and which looked out of place on the wall was Andrew Wyeth’s “The Granddaughter.” It is a painting that evokes emotion and tells a story on its own. The surrounding art being abstract didn’t grab our attention or interest.

There was an exhibit of blown glass corn sculptures of many colors called “The Corn Zone.” Its purpose is to highlight the problems with genetic modification of corn—a cause near and dear to my heart. Before reading about the exhibit, we observed how bizarre the corn was with extrusions that looked like worms gone bad. That is a fit image of what happens to corn when you mess with nature.

The building itself is a sterile cube of stainless steel and glass. Perhaps that appeals to some, but it left me cold. My taste runs more to wood and warmth.

If you aren’t “in” to modern art, you might just choose to skip this museum. We noted that a number of people walked in and then out within a few minutes.

Nice Small art museum

Great way to spend an afternoon if you like art. Changing exhibits and interesting cafe'. Also some kitchy things in the gift shop if you need to take something home to mom.

A really good museum on par with many in larger metropolitan areas. One of the exhibits was really good as was hte main collection.

Try out their free visit

By teresamL380OQ |

We like to visit the Figge Art Museum while they have their limited time free visits. This year, they had Wizard of Oz temporary exihibit. Their staff is always friendly and the museum is neat and well kept. A great visit while visiting the QC.

Impressive

By Jordan T |

When you first enter Figge, you may be a little underwhelmed, thinking it's more like a cafe/bar and store. But as you go up each level, you see that there are thousands of amazing art pieces here. Such a variety of interests and styles. I even ran into the guy who heads Daytrotter here, which was a cool experience to say the least.

I will try to find its name, but the piece that had its own floor (on April 1) that dealt with race and representation was breathtaking/astonishing.

Definitely make a trip if you're in Davenport, it's cheap and impressive. I wish we had arrived earlier to enjoy the bar before seeing the works and to take even more time browsing (we only had about an hour).

Worth a Visit!

By Patricia K |

We were primarily interested in the special exhibit “Portrait of Maquoketa” by a local artist. The display was amazing, with portraits of Maquoketans on the back of panels that provided a unique view of the town and surrounding area. It was well worth the visit! The museum itself was well done with smaller displays on the various floors. Beautiful museum shop with lovely items to purchase!

Jewel on the Mississippi

The Figge has so much to offer. Incredible structure, beautiful art, varied collection, community interactive events, wonderful gift shop, great awareness of community needs, and a super member of the entire Quad City community. You need to stop by when you are in town.

Figge Art Museum

By Lighthouselar |

Great find, loved the Maquoketa exhibit and American Scene on Paper. Nice museum store, good choices for gifts.

Excellent museum for a city this size.

By MS2245 |

I enjoyed Iowa native Grant Wood's work in a large exhibit. Also works from Picasso, Miro, Matta, Lloyd Weber, and Lichtenstein are in the permanent collection. There was also an excellent Jackson Pollock exhibit with his work "Murel." It is currently on tour. Best collection of Haitian art I have seen outside of Miami. Overall very impressive for a smaller city.

A Great Visit

The Figge Museum in Davenport, IA has an interesting collection of paintings and art installations. Their art studios and family room are excellent creative spaces.

The visit at the art museum

When I went there they had some good portraits and paintings and it was very interesting and it's worth a visit to go there.

First class smaller art museum

By nowandthen48 |

Not a large museum, but a good mix of artwork displayed. Two special exhibits when we were there most recently, one of a local artist. Check admission policy; it was free for at least two months in summer 2017. Cafe is open for lunch on weekdays.

Art for all tastes

By Catherine M |

The Figge Art Museum is in downtown Davenport. Their permanent collection offers traditional art from a variety of genres such as American Impressionism, European Impression, Renaissance and modern American abstract art. There is a whole section dedicated to traditional and contemporary Haitian art. Traveling exhibitions tend to focus on contemporary Midwest artists. They also provide a venue for rotating exhibitions of art from local high schools and colleges on both sides of the river.

A gem in downtown Davenport

By Jessica J |

My husband and I visited on a recent weekend away. Although we only live an hour away and had heard of it before, neither of us had ever visited the Figge. It truly is a gem!

Suprisingly Good Museum

By cldeergirl |

I have visited the Figge a number of times with visiting friends. They have a variety of art and really good traveling exhibits. There are a number of classes available year round, there are " Nights at the Figge" events. The cafe, first floor can be rented for wedding receptions - gorgeous - and the food the cafe and catering provides is very high quality. It's a great place to visit if you are in the QC area and I highly recommend it.

Beautiful architecture!

By Iowagirl495 |

Feature midwest artists, and has a traveling display. Hosts art festival twice a year on Mothers Day weekend and Labor Day weekend.

Very Interesting place to visit!

By KuhlHandLook |

Along with traveling art works coming to visit once, in a while; it is a nice place to relax and view some of the local artistic works. The building is unique by itself. I enjoyed my first visit there and plan to go back again. Especially, when other displays come into town.

Fun Times

By K_J-Traveling |

Drove by the Figge Museum and discovered they had an exhibit on the Wizard of Oz. My daughter just got back from New York and saw Wicked so we had to stop. Very nice!

Beautiful building, impressive exhibits

By DMGAmes_Iowa |

The permanent collections of the Figge Art Museum are impressive. Right now, they also have exhibits from the University of Iowa's permanent collection, since the U of I Art Museum was flooded in 2008 and has not yet been rebuilt. We especially liked the galleries on American Regionalism (Grant Wood, Marvin Cone etc), the gallery with furniture and stained glass by Frank Lloyd Wright, and the gallery displaying the museum's almost-unique collection of contemporary Haitian art. Unfortunately, the museum cafe was not open, but our tickets allowed us to leave the museum for lunch and then return if we wished. Very nice museum gift shop.

Nice, upscale museum

By Manatoba |

This museum is very well laid out with many exhibits, come which change on theme. It takes a couple hours to see everything, so a nice day visit option.

High Class Museum in a Small Town

By maggiedo1 |

Very impressive. The building itself is a work of art. Even the elevator is a piece of art. Well laid out and easy to navigate. There is a nice varied selection of different art venues. A children's section is offered for hands on projects, and also a hands on class for adults. I was quite taken with the design of the building and the extensive walls of glass which were themselves very beautiful.

Great museum for location

By Michael W |

Free for summer and Thursday nights. Innovative and moving exhibits- surprising for small town museum.

Small but Diverse

By Gary E |

This relatively small museum has a little something for everyone going from ultra modern experimental back to the 1600’s. Well worth the visit.

World Class Art Museum

By Shonnie H |

Vio Figge former owner of Davenport Bank, in his will, left this for the people to enjoy. A world traveler, he put his heart into this. You will not be disappointed. Former Sate Rep. joe Seng once said to me " De Moines ( Iowa capital ) would kill to have it". Hit the give shop before you leave!

What a gem!

By Thomas E |

I was lucky enough to visit during the Wizard of Oz exhibit. Lots of wonderful displays. Great galleries, great museum

Pretty neat for a smaller town museum

By esfesq |

we went for a lego exhibition and it was neat (kids had a blast) but it rather modest -- and I guess that's the theme with the Figge: it's well-done for a museum in a relatively small town. Don't expect world class art, but it's laid out well and worth taking a look if you're in town.

Simple and Eloquent

By MJO1970 |

The open space is peaceful and allows for a wonderful viewing of the art work there. We enjoyed the simple design that let the art speak for its own beauty. A good experience.

interesting museum

look up the various programs that are offered in addition to the permanent displays. nice local museum which is good to visit and take guests to.

Free and outstanding!

By Susanvan58 |

Ca upoys hot afternoon in Davenport, we tucked into the free Figge museum and we’re blown away by the incredible collections. The Haitian art was world class as well as many other fine rooms chock full of surprises!

Good Variety of Art

By Jeff K |

Our family and I spent a little over an hour here and were very impressed. They had a wide variety of art including a Grant Wood exhibit that was well done, and a Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit that was very interesting. We liked most everything except a photography exhibit on the 4th floor that we found pretty dull.

If you’re in the Quad Cities area you should make a point to visit. Recommended.

Great Art Museum to Visit

By ohiomattrick |

Great museum to visit, impressive selection for a smaller city art museum. We were traveling back to Ohio from being out West, and decided to stop in Davenport to see the Figge. We were not disappointed, and is worth a few hours.

Figge Art Museum

By Cindy W |

My daughter and I just happened by this place and just decided to stop in. Very glad that we did. There were so many examples of the different paintings/drawings, it was hard to choose a favorite. one could stand and gaze at the wonderous works of art for hours. It's a great place to learn art appreciation.

Great Regional Museum

Wizard of Oz and Prairie art shows this summer. Building by British Architect David Chipperfield. Great place for the whole family.

A not so hidden gem...

By Michael H |

The Figge Art Museum in downtown Davenport, Iowa provides visitors with a world-class experience in an easy to get to location. The permanent collection of Haitian and Mexican Colonial art are just the tip of the Figge's collection iceberg. Special exhibitions change continually and are often highlighted with free Thursday evening programs. The children's area provides plenty of creative, hands-on options for young aspiring artists. If you happen to come during the week, the Figge Cafe serves delicious, interesting lunches from 11 - 2. To top off the attraction, if you happen to come during the summer months...your admission has already been paid by generous supporters of the Figge. Don't miss this attraction!

Interesting exhibits

Interesting and well presented. Lots of space available for more though as we felt there could have been more

Davenport is a beautiful area.

Visiting with our family, and visiting the several museums that are there. We also took a luncheon cruise on the Mississippi which was wondersul!!

You'd have to be bored, and from Iowa to think this was a legitimate Museum. Sorry.

By BorisBalkan |

Awful.
Sorry, I had high hopes upon viewing the exterior... however...

-Most of the works presented in this poorly laid-out, glorified-gallery are from unknowns, born from nobody.

-More money was spent on the building's aesthetics, rather than their collections

-Local artists had 'arts and crafts' displayed throughout much of the museum (quilts from 2000?)

-The building itself makes ZERO SENSE in such a decrepit and decaying city

-You will notice a lot of people here review THE GIFT SHOP... You can connect the dots

-The bathrooms are nice

-Take a short drive to Chicago for Art in the midwest, this is not the spot.

A real gem in Davenport.

By Velohog |

The Figge is a real treat for the Quad Cities. They have wonderful visiting exhibits. The permanent exhibits are noteworthy. A must visit in Davenport.

By theabomb03 |

I've been 6th 5th is museum several times and it is breathtaking from the outside and open and beautiful on the inside. Their permanent collection holds art from Haiti, John Deere's collection and more. The rotating exhibits are interesting and change regularly.

In addition, the museum holds many special events and if you reserve a spot you can enjoy the culinary skills of their chef. He's fantastic.

My fiance and I have taken many trips to the museum and always enjoy it. So much so that we will be having our wedding reception there.

Wonderful

By Kelley J |

Small but mighty art museum!! I will definitely go back to see the new exhibit that will be there. They also just started having abstract art in the museum. The weekend of Jan 4th was free admission for any Bank of America card holder members!!

The Wizard of Oz

By Hallsusane |

The Oz items on display are on loan from Willard Carroll from Maine and this will be the only place to see them outside of Maine. There are books and posters and wallpaper and games and the highlight of this exhibit-the costume of the Lollipop Guild munchkin from the 1939 movie. The museum is free all summer so visit often.
