Residential area

By Chris Martin |

Take the street car to magazine street and get off at Jackson Avenue. We put the app with the itinerary of the neighborhood and visit and walk from streets to streets and discover these colonial houses all more beautiful than the other whose owners of the time rich planters of cotton sugar cane tobacco architects let us guess the colossal fortunes acquired. These huge and beautifully maintained houses some restored retain their charm and architecture of the period. A few are for sale. The cemetery and church were closed too bad.

Beautiful houses

By Lynn Berg |

We took the Green Streetcar Line from the French Quarter. We got off at Washington and walked into the district. Beautiful houses. The reason I gave a 4 star is that many a sidewalk are very broken up and difficult to navigate.

Great to drive or walk around

By jessZ91KV |

We spent time first driving around the Garden District then parking and walking. So many huge, beautiful homes with great architecture. The area was beautiful but watch out for the sidewalks. Many are heaving from the tree roots. But also adds to the character of the neighborhoods.

Way more than just some big houses!

By cabosteve |

A very pleasant and relaxing tour of the scenic Garden District. Erin was a phenomenal tour guide and I would highly recommend her to anyway going. We learned why it is called the Garden District and got great insight to the history and architecture of the area.

Green street car

By Yenyok |

Riding up St Charles Avenue on the green Streetcar ,he oldest continually running streetcar in the United States. The sidewalks can be uneven in places so use care. Extraordinary homes, beautiful gardens, and fascinating history line the streets. Walking tours are available and very worth doing if you want to learn the stories behind many of the homes. v]Take the streetcar to the end of the garden district and slowly make your way back towards downtown, but I prefer having a guide to learn more.

Beautiful

By Lolo624 |

Definitely worth it, some beautiful homes and sites. Usually included in most tours but can do on your own as well.

Gorgeous Garden District

By MCoolBreeze |

Spectacular! The homes and history are breathtaking. Definitely take a tour to learn the layout and history or the homes, gardens and gates.
Many/most of the streets and sidewalks are torn up in some state of repair Which makes it very difficult to walk or ride. Sure hope NOLA gets their road and sidewalk projects in order.

A majestic neighbourhood with great houses.

By Michael O |

This has all the atmosphere of a Victorian Southern Movie with expansive dresses and men in top hats. There are many remarkable houses like the Goodrich Stanley House an English merchant whose son Henry Morton Stanley found Livingstone. The House of Broel showcases clothes and dolls houses. Perfect for walking and taking in the houses.

Take the tour

By sunny s |

Denise, from the Hop on Hop Off Tours gave a terrific tour of the garden district. In her brief 45 minute tour she displayed her knowledge minced with humor about this lovely area of New Orleans. Such a delight to see the city has preserved some of its historic treasures.

Beautiful Walk

By Heidi B |

My husband and I enjoyed an early Sunday stroll through this quaint neighborhood. We took the St. Charles streetcar from the French Quarter. It was super easy to do. We were disappointed that the cemetary was closed for repairs, but after 4 hurricanes it's expected. You can still get a nice glimpse of the cemetary through the gates. We looked up addresses and historical information before our trip and brought the documents on our walk with us. We really enjoyed the history and architecture on our walk.

Get away from the fray and stroll under the magnolias

By Antiquity Jones |

By far, the place to chill, absorb amazing architecture and de-compress. This quiet residential neighborhood has many amazing culinary gems, shops and is a long the St.Charles street car line. My favorite area to stay in NOLA.

A pleasure to walk or drive!

By Runesong |

Beautiful houses, gardens, and streets with infinite variations! A real pleasure to walk or drive, although the construction and many potholes make the drive a little choppy.

Beautiful Architecture

By Robyn S |

We road the street car to the Garden District. This is a lovely, quiet area that features many types of architecture. Be careful walking because tree roots have caused damage to sidewalks. We stopped at the Chicory House for coffee to warm up because it was a cold day. What a cute place with a shopping area upstairs.

Such a beautiful part of New Orleans

By dva |

We love all the different architectural styles that are in the Garden District in New Orleans. Each time we visit we have to take the time to take the streetcar to go to the Garden District.

Beautiful!

By Kukulkan17 |

Beautiful residential area where it is good to stroll admiring the beautiful houses and their gardens. A special mention for Benjamin Button's house at 2707 Coliseum Street.

Beautiful interesting homes

By Twovets |

Take a walking tour. The sidewalks can be uneven in places so use care. There are so many beautiful homes with interesting histories.

Amazing houses to look at!

By Cliff L. |

This is our first trip to NO and to get away from the quarter area, we heard of walking around the garden district. So we took a ride to the district and started walking around. The houses are amazing! So awesome to look at! The people were also very friendly. People would be on their porch and as we walked by, they would say hi or how’s you’re day? It’s a lot of walking and keep an eye on the sidewalk and some are uneven but definitely a great place to check out!

Gorgeous Houses

By Adrianna |

Went past the Garden District several times during my visit (St Charles Streetcar and the Bus Tour). This area just has so many gorgeous mansions that are nicely painted and the lawns are just perfect. Feels weird staring at other people's houses but I was just in awe with how beautiful they are. Kinda wonder how they coordinate the color of the exteriors haha.

Lots of gorgeous mansions and beautiful homes... but....

By Michael S |

Seriously, According to the New Orleans’ city government’s website, maintaining a sidewalk in a proper state, free from hazardous conditions is the responsibility of the residential or commercial property owner. Property owners can be billed by the City for installation or paving of a sidewalk if it is in the interest of public safety for the City to make such a repair.
It actuality, the condition of some of the sidewalks in New Orleans rivals the sidewalks in the poorest sections of Buenos Aires. You look up to the architecture at the risk of falling down. Tree roots have broken, tilted and raised some of the cement sidewalk slabs by 3 or 4 inches or more in places and the sidewalks made of bricks have been allowed to deteriorate into a shambles of loose bricks and holes that make walking treacherous and wheelchair access impossible. Every district of New Orleans has its hazards. The sidewalks in the Garden District are a dangerous disgrace.

BeautifulArea

By Janel F |

Beautiful area to explore and look around. The homes and area is amazingly eclectic and gives the allure of real southern charm

John Goodman lives here!

By Robyn S |

Beautiful homes. I only wish more of them were pink, as a personal preference. Watch where you step!

Charming southern hospitality at its very best

By bill f |

The garden district of New Orleans is such a quaint hideaway in the city it is safe, picturesque and that street car is amazingly convenient to get back and forth! I highly recommend this area to stay in New Orleans to get away from the hustle and bustle but you are only a 10 minute street car ride from the French quarter so it’s very convenient!

Beautiful area

By Chewfus |

We always stay in the garden district when visiting New Orleans. It’s beautiful, quiet and relaxing. It’s fun to grab a frozen French75 from Superior Seafood (to go) and walk around while vowing the beautiful architecture.

Beautiful, but not much parking.

By Stephen D |

Take the St Charles Streetcar or a tour. It can be very hard to find a place to park. Lots of beautiful homes.

Uniquely beautiful

By Rebecca O |

Drove through and these houses are simply beautiful! So different and unique. Took so many pictures of them.

A short break

By sofia v |

If you want to escape the French Quarter for a few hours this is your solution. We did an audio guide and it was very entertaining (Free Tours by Foot)

Beautiful southern homes with gated front gardens

By lynnm102 |

We loved walking along St Charles Avenue, past these beautiful homes. Huge live oak trees and gardens. Very peaceful area.

Lovely walk among the best/finest of NOLA Architecture

By Faiyaz H |

Generational and new wealth aside, the fact that the folks making this their ancestral home and residence have spent their hard-earned money, love for the people/culture of NOLA, and maintaining the architectural integrity of yore makes this tour all the worth while. Take a lot of pics!

Don't miss this part of the city

By Lorna H |

Wandering the streets of the Garden District with the incredible and unique homes is a delight. No two homes are the same.

Fun and Informative

By lori |

what a wonderful way to learn about the architecture and history of New Orleans. Our tourguide Erin was wonderful. She was energetic an fun to listen to. She pointed out many features of the houses and their famous people who lived there. I would recommend it to all. The sidewalks were not the easiest to move around so i would recommend that people with walking disabilities to be careful

Took a trip thru the district

By Jessica2361 |

Wanted to go to the old cemetery and went thru the garden district. Very beautiful and worth the trip on the street car that was 90 years old, Lot of old houses and history glore

Take a short, inexpensive ride into the Garden District with this tram/trolley

By retireeVancouver |

St. Charles Street Car #12, 40 cents senior's fare, is an inexpensive way to see the posh houses in the Garden District on St. Charles Street. The best section to see such homes on the #12 tram is from the WWII Museum to Loyolo University/Audubon Park - about a 30 minute one way ride.

This ride is especially nice in December. I enjoyed looking at the exterior Christmas decor on the doors, balconies, and fences of these homes despite the fact of the similarity of the decor. The lovely private homes are all large with multiple stories surrounded by large areas of greenery which separate them from neighboring properties. Probably price tags for these homes are in the million(s) dollar range. Not one house looks like another.

The street car runs along the middle of St. Charles street so good views can be had of these homes from either side of the street car. The street car has only 1 car with limited seating. While Cemetry No 2 is near this tram line, the better/nicer cemetry to visit is the one near City Park - Cemetery No 3 where important politicians and clegy are buried with resulting impressive "tombs".

Perfect for those who love beautiful homes and history

By anonymous1002 |

New Orleans is so much more than the French Quarter, and it's well worth venturing beyond it to enjoy the gorgeous garden district. Highly recommend a tour so you can fully appreciate the history and architecture.

A MUST VISIT

By lndnall |

We were there just as the city was shutting down for the virus but.....we drove ourselves around nice and slow it is awsome display of very unique homes. Can't wait to go back for the offical tour.

Visit the house from American Horror Story

By Nancy U |

The only thing my daughter requested to do while in NOLA was visit the house that was in season 3 of American Horror Story. You can’t go inside but you can walk around the Garden District that has beautiful homes with amazing architecture. The sidewalks are very uneven and my daughter stepped in dog poop. There are lots of people walking their dogs and little signs to say scoop your poop. Just watch your step but enjoy the scenery.

Stay here

By Baby12121 |

We loved staying at a bnb in this area. It’s a walkable distance to the FQ yet you get to enjoy a lusher neighborhood that’s better maintained than the FQ. Lots of upper scale dining available too.

Gorgous homes and architecture.

By Heather S |

The garden district is full of glamorous houses and famous people homes. We did a guided walking tour but I would suggest a self guided walking tour. You can find free ones online and download them to your phone. If you love architecture this is the tour for you. Beautiful area.

Took a tour.

By Trudi H |

I recommend an organized tour, you learn so much. We had a great tour guide named Lee. Lee gave us so much insight into the history of each house and the people that lived there. Highly recommend.

Nice walk through neighborhood

By Dawn M |

We walked around for about an hour. Beautiful large old oaks. Architecture impressive. Walking distance to several excellent restaurants in the neighborhood. You can take the streetcar to the area if you like.

Great for a nice leisurely walk.

By Daminick1980 |

Don't pay for a tour you can look up plenty of info about the houses and you can find them all on google maps. Go at your own pace and don't deal with the groups with the tours. The architectural aspects are amazing. Watch your step thought a lot of the side walks are uneven.

Gorgeous, really takes you back in time

By efustok |

The area is just stunning, full of beautiful Victorian homes...the trolley is so cute...magazine street is so fun, full of great shops and restaurants...this is such a great area to stay in, when the weather is cooler, everything is walkable.

Highlight of our trip

By Companion716293 |

We have been to New Orleans on previous occasions but had never visited the Garden District. We took the trolly out and with our own map, walked the area. It was lovely

Driving it was a better option

By Wade C |

Beautiful homes and properties to see. We drove the through Garden District and it was well worth the time. The traffic was not to busy in the afternoon. We ended in a not so good area at the end so be careful.

Wonderful architecture!

By J B |

Disappointed the cemeteries were closed due to COVID-19; fortunately the eclectic architecture of the beautiful homes/lawns kept us entertained for blocks and blocks...

Fun quick activity in the car for young families.

By KrispyDonut |

Beautiful architecture. The speed bumps along the roads were a little annoying since we were already driving slow, but the homes were well kept and fun to see.

The Garden District is charm central!

By Anji N |

A gorgeous neighborhood to spend the day it’s. A must visit when in NOLA. Historic architecture and lots of charm! Small local shops for browsing and plenty of food options as well. Highlight of our trip!

This is a must see.

By Greg J |

Take a walking tour, and see the old cemetery, old plantation owner houses, and new movie star houses. Plus Archie Mannings house if you are an old football fan. Places to eat and little shops.

A trip back in time!

By Vicktorya D |

This is a must see attraction. There are walking tours, but we did our own that we were able to download on an app. The architecture is unbelievably beautiful and there is so much history there. I would definitely recommend seeing this beautiful area.

Garden District with D.J

By O G |

If you’re in New Orleans and want to get away from French Quarter I highly recommend a guided walking tour through the Garden District. Beautiful homes with amazing history. Our guide D.J Hayes was the best part of the whole experience. He was able to provide insightful information about many different stops and he made the whole experience a great one.

Fancy homes

By Pleaselise |

We did a walking tour with Steve. Our guides name was Angie. She was very informative and told great stories about who and how they lived in these large beautiful homes. Enjoyed the tour of the Garden District

History and Architecture

By COTraveller33 |

Took a self-guided walking tour.

Cool architecture, and lots of history. One super old cemetery.

Watch your step, as the sidewalks are hit-or-miss.

Would recommend: Meh
Would re-patronize: Probably not

Beautiful architecture

By Tracy J |

Very refreshing and refined. Would strongly recommend a walking tour. The different architectural plans were amazing to see on display. Makes me want to move here.

Take this Tour with Michaela Reid

By Daydream715046 |

On Mother's Day, Michaela Reid took us out to the Garden District and showed up the finest of the grand houses of NOLA.

A native of NOLA, Michaela had the first-hand perspective of the district and a brain full of history on the changes that have taken place over the years in this area.

Some very famous people have lived here and many still do. Michaela will tell you who who's who in the Garden District and this history of their homes.

All Y'All remember, this isn't Los Angeles, it's NOLA so polite society rules apply. The stars are there, and please respect their privacy and their property.

Garden District an Enjoyable Walk Around

By Judy M |

The Garden District is a nice change from the dirty areas of Burbon St. It's a welcome change to walk around and see the beautiful homes in this area. I suggest walk through all the small streets away from the main roads. It's safe, quiet and very enjoyable. When done simply head back to the main road and catch the trolley back to your starting point.

Highly recommend

By Timberly F |

Karen was an excellent tour guide of the Garden District! She has a wealth of knowledge of the history of the area and the houses. She was funny and entertaining and made the 90 minute tour fly by! Highly recommend!

Beautiful area by trolley or foot

By terrysavage |

You can take a leisurely ride on the St Charles trolley to see the Main Street . You can also hop on and off and walk the lanes to get a better view of some of the amazing houses and gardens .

Walk Around The Garden District

By islandnora |

The area was lovely. The cemetery was closed due to Covid 19 which was unfortunate. But lots to see. The trees are gigantic and beautiful. The shops were cool on Magazine Street and we caught the bus back to Canal Street.

Nice old district neighborhood

By Joe R |

This district area is really nice to walk by and admire its beauty. Very old homes and nice to take photos. Take a tour or go on your own.

Take the trolley to the Garden District and get off and Walk!

By Eurospec |

If you like old Antebellum mansions, this is the place to go see them. Just walk and they are everywhere! Beautiful gardens, and incredible architecture. Well worth taking the time to visit.

St Charles has it all without the loud party crowd

By thebuck |

Love St Charles for less noise than other places in NOLA -- places to eat -- the trolley -- two 24hr bars with food to enjoy at the end of the night!!

Beautiful

By DontStopExploring |

Beautiful tree lined streets that give you an aura of old world charm. Beautiful mansions. Definitely a walkable area.

Beautiful Mansions and gardens

By newmexjags |

We went on a Saturday afternoon, I was surprised there wasn't more sightseers..I found an online guide, and we drove to a number of the houses. A walking tour would be the best, but I'm not very mobile. Many very beautiful Civil War era mansions, some being restored.. Definitely recommend if you are in to history.

Beautiful homes

By Destination15444 |

Just loved the beautiful parks and homes. Each has its distinct character. The wrought iron balconies on the homes enhance the French feel of New Orleans.

Must see!! Beautiful Houses!! Very Historical!!

By Sergio O |

Its a must must walk, bike or drive!! (Although I recommend walking). This gorgeous area is filled with the spirit of new orleans. We got to see classic weddings with Jazz playing, people dressed in Charleston style clothes, and we saw ancient gorgeous castle looking homes, and mansions.
Visit!! Dont miss it!!

Horrible Street Conditions

By Meaghan G |

Maybe this would be better as part of a trolley or tour but we tried to drive ourselves one day and the streets are in awful condition. They all have huge ruts, torn up, damaged, etc. and streets are impossibly narrow with people parking on both sides. Did not enjoy at all so we ended up leaving. I can't comment on the houses much because I was enjoying myself so little trying to manage the roads!

The real N.O.

By Joseph P |

This is the real New Orleans experience. Antebellum mansions and manors, charming strip of boutique shops, great authentic N.O. style cuisine, and watering holes frequented by the locals. Get away from the French quarter and experience this neighborhood if you want an authentic experience of the Crescent City at it's best.

Mr

By zzzzvodkazzzz |

Beautiful streets, gorgeous houses v and gardens.
Electric streetcars, restaurants, very nice romantic area.

Enjoy walking the area!

By KenzieZZ |

Wow. So many fantastic houses. Peaceful and safe setting. Enjoyed exploring and stopping at various little boutiques.

Beautiful District of New Orleans

By andyh67186334 |

If you are travelling from New Orleans city centre, you need to get to Washington Avenue and explore the streets and avenues to explore the Garden District.
There are many beautiful homes to explore plus side streets provide quirky shops and cafes and restaurants.
This is a great way to explore another part of the city, which is quieter than the French Quarter.

Beautiful neighborhood, great homes and restaurants around

By Alangon |

Did a Garden district tour and was quite enlightening to see these beautiful homes from Sandra Bullock's to John Goodman. So rich in history and lots of great restaurants in the area. A must visit while in NOLA.

Beautiful Homes, Nice shops

By BUCKEYE1982 |

Get one of the apps for the walking tour of the homes. The shops are mainly antiques and art, with some good restaurants.

A nice walk

By Michelle ☀️ |

Beautiful homes, great history. I love the quaint southern little streets. The architecture is amazing and so unique to have the different styles in such a small area.

A Charming side of New Orleans

By Tami L |

Totally different from the French Quarter. Quiet and peaceful strolls to see the very large homes and abundant plant life. Find a tour to learn all the history and the different styles of houses.

The architecture is beautiful

By Sheila J |

Beautiful houses and all the beautiful trees, the architecture is unique and stunning, we spent the afternoon walking Magazine Street.

Colorfully decked decks

By Bernard W |

Nightfall was approaching, so we just drove around the different streets looking at what was once mansions. Many were beautifully kept homes with porches all decked out for Mardi Gras. Very historic and interesting to see.

A Very Nice Tour

By GPaCalgary |

Six of us took a self-guided tour of this neighborhood and we all enjoyed it thoroughly. The descriptions on the tour package that was provided to us at our B and B was excellently written. We learned a lot about the history of the area and really enjoyed visiting these gorgeous homes.

Beautiful!

By Kathleen F |

We stayed in the Garden District and some days stuck around to see gardens, architecture, cemetery, cafe's, sandwich shops, and this place with bbqued oysters. Yum!. Also, has mini marts with crawfish turnovers--so good! Commander's Palace. Street cars, Beautiful old mansion. Lovely!

What an experience

By kfsvc78 |

NOLA’s visit is not complete til you visit this neighborhood. Lots of beautiful mansion and beautiful average size homes. We took the street car to get here as a family of 6 $3 per person for a day pass. Do not miss.

Different New Orleans

By Bulldog64 |

this area is in contrast to Bourbon st. clean, safe walking streets with lots of celebrity mansions, some bars & restaurants

There are some caveats

By ShenoaAlex |

Sidewalks are in total disrepair and a hazard. Not recommended to walk around at night as ever st Charles is a bit sketchy. We abandoned waiting for a night trolley and getting an Uber. Great area to drive around but be warned. It was probably a nice area once.

lovely

By Marta R |

A must if you come to New Orleans, take the St Charles streetcar at Canal Street and enjoy the trip looking at mansions and , well, gardens. Hop off for a bit of very interesting shopping (independent designers, shoes, bags, books) and eat something in one of the many places. It is a very romantic atmosphere, fun to be walking up and down these tree lined shadowy streets.

Beautiful homes

By Tammy S |

Bring a map and a pen. Depending on if you do a guided tour or self tour, all the homes were beautiful. There are homes not on the tours we did, so we meandered the country side so to speak. We met a “local” who was very helpful showing us some homes. A lot of history here.

Relaxing Stroll with Beautiful Architecture

By TravelingSoccerLoon |

We did a self guided walk(with the help of Frommer's Walking Tour New Orleans #2) and had a pleasant and relaxing afternoon in the Garden District. Many guided tours roaming around looking at the same houses that we were reading about. Take the St Charles Ave Street Car to the Washington Ave stop.

Great Scenic drive In NOLA.

By CES122 |

Most famous area In NOLA. Houses. Shopping. Restaurants Walkable and easy to pay to park. Will visit every time and certainly ride the Trolley Car.

Fun way to spend an autumn day

By scrappysquirrel |

We enjoyed a laid back walk through the Garden District. It was a short walk from our lodging. We felt safe walking to and around the area. It was neat to see some of the houses decorated for Halloween.

Garden district greenery

By May F |

Our family took a walking tour at this area. There are lots of nice Victorian style houses, mansions to visit around. If you have a guide, the guide will point to you the history of the cemetery of Lafayette, famous actors houses and nice restaurants established long ago. Good to see the contrast and cultural aspects of life.

Beautiful views - closed cemetery

By Betsy B |

The gardens district was beautiful! Gorgeous homes and trees. We saw the Tree of Life and AHS Coven home. The cemetery was closed and had been since last November. Does not appear to be opening anytime soon. That was the only disappointment in the garden district. The shops are unique and food yummy.. we had tacos at The Rum House ( taco Tuesday deals on food and drinks)

Beautiful

By Amy J |

Every time I come to the city I have to do a drive through of the garden district, there's no place like it especially if you are an Anne Rice fan.

The neighborhood

By pboogie2001 |

Beautiful home, loved walking through the neighborhood looking at all the architecture. Amazed at how they are keeping the homes true to the times.

Meh!!

By E Venn |

While many of the houses are kept up nicely, the sidewalks and streets are very uneven in spots. This may not be an ideal area for seniors to walk. Not exactly the upscale neighborhood we were expecting. At the time of our visit, the Lafayette Cemetery was closed due to repairs, or so they say. Nicer houses and neighborhoods can be found if you take a round trip on the St. Charles Streetcar.

getaway

By c j |

We went though the Garden District on a tour that we took. Has some really nice homes. Got to see the home of Anne Rice, that was awesome.

Beautiful homes and gardens where the parades go!!

By Leland C |

So, we learned a thing or two in New Orleans, like the parades don't go down Bourbon Street>, Imagine that. They are too big and the crowds too massive. We love old antebellum homes with lovely southern oak trees and gardens generally seen in Savannah and Charleston. This is the place. Take the green trolley for a cheap ride and breath taking views of southern charm. We did it 3 times, and could do it 3 more. The trolley stops along the route, including at restaurants, the zoo, and the park. Exact change. $3.00 for 24 hours both ways, and 40 cents for 65 and over, what a deal. Wheelchair accessible too. We laughed at the Mardi Gras beads in the trees, how cool is that!!

Nice for a stroll

By TrueTexasTraveler |

While not as impressive as Galveston, the Garden District certainly has it's share of must-sees. Taking a self guided stroll through this neighborhood is a great way to see the unique gulf architecture cities like New Orleans, Galveston and Mobile are known for.

Don't miss this area. Terrific history and architecture

By peneloped2018 |

Stay in a hotel in the District if you can. It is a great location to walk, and there are a few restaurants to catch a bite.

Unique

By NaniC8 |

If you get a chance, hop on the Street Car for an enjoyable trip through the Garden District of New Orleans! Get off for a wonderful breakfast or lunch at the The Camellia Grill, then back on for the trip back to the French Quarter!!

Get the map and do yourself

By Chuckmidwest |

Houses are really fun to walk around. Won't see famous but who cares their houses are the real stars here. So impressive and right up next to you in most cases.Nice day, do this.

So different to the French Quarter

By Neale1810 |

We had heard about this area from our tour guide in the French Quarter and decided to walk over to it from our hotel on the other side of the French Quarter. It was a lovely crisp morning so decided to walk - glad we did as we were able to see the large differences between the French Quarter, Financial district and then this Garden District. It took us 75 mins to walk over there but could have taken the streetcar for half of this.

I had previously downloaded a walking map of the area with a recommended route and this worked out very well. There are obviously some great looking houses and gardens throughout the district - all so unique. There were lots of tour groups walking round at the same time so you can do what we did as a self walk or join one of these and gain some insight into individual properties.

Well worth the visit.

Beautiful

By Patricia W |

The Garden District is so beautiful. We got to stay here this time. Right off the St Charles streetcar. So safe and so pretty!

Easy walking and self guided touring

By John H |

You can pretty much walk down any street in the Garden District and eventually come across something stunning - we spent multiple evenings walking around the area since our hotel was within it. Many of the homes that have notable histories have plaque posted; but any number of free online walking guides can also help you out if you're more into mapping out the sights to see.

Perfect place to stay

By Deborah G |

Simply beautiful area, lots of energy, close to great restaurants & an easy to shops & galleries. Lots of activity on the streets. Very safe

Lovely

By Bobbie H |

We thoroughly enjoyed walking around the Garden district. We rented an Airbnb there in the Garden District near our daughter's home.

It was fun that the locals would greet us and chat a little.

The plants and architecture were so beautiful. They are not something that we see other places.

Must See Neighborhood!

By Chris Mayfield |

Beautiful houses, and architecture. Such grandeur. I would recommend having an itinerary before attempting, and then drive around at your leisure. That way, you can enjoy the sights in the air-conditioned luxury of your own vehicle.

Daniel was the BEST!!

By Nicholaus J |

DANIEL was amazing!!

I never thought I would have as much fun as I did. Really made me interested in seeing more New Orleans history!! 10/10

Decorated Cst Iron Work

By Michael T |

Walk around and enjoy all the flowers and decorations on the building in the Garden District. Enjoy it by foot or by hop on and hop off. We did both and had a great time.

Nice to do

By Laurent S |

It is nice to discovered this quiet area. The building are very famous and the architecture is totally different of the vieux carré. Walk to see it and appreciate the design

Check out the mansions

By dawn321321 |

We took the streetcar from the French Quarter to the Garden District. Rode it all the way to the end and got to see all of the beautiful mansions decorated for Mardi Gras. Then we got back on and rode the streetcar to Commander's Palace.

A Belle Epoque Built on Slavery

By PossumCath |

Built on the back of slavery the Garden District is fading or restored opulence, recaptured in a 21st century setting. The houses are huge and beautiful, grand dames of their era, a belle epoque. But the wealth they came from is not beautiful. You go: you decide.

Spectacular Historical Homes

By Susan T |

We were on a second day trip to New Orleans so bought the day pass for the trolley and rode the St. Charles line to the end in the Garden a district. We got off and boarded another trolley for the trip back to Canel St. It was a leisurely ride so we both could enjoy the scenery. There are so many beautiful, historical homes. We also saw Loyola and Tulane Universities. There is a very old cemetery you can get off the trolley to explore but we already saw it on another trip. If you’re hungry there are multiple restaurants to choose from if the timing is right for your hunger.

Beautiful

By Jane N |

Beautiful homes. We took a cable car to the area and when walked around, found a place for lunch and found an online free walking tour that described a lot about many of the homes. Wish I could afford one.

Free Walking Tours By Foot!

By Trish W |

We tried to schedule a walking tour the morning of the scheduled 1:30pm tour by the above company. It said it was full but sometimes you could join if they weren’t full, so we went to the designated meeting spot. No one was there so after a short wait we tried to find the cemetery since we knew from a u-tube video that they went there. We ended up finding the tour guide and he let us join the group so we had a good experience and he was very good. At the end, you pay by cash or venmo whatever you want. We learned that the tour began at 1pm so I recommend DO NOT BOOK ONLINE. Call several days ahead and wait for someone to call you back so you have the correct time. They charge about $3 each at registration for office costs but the guides only pay is what people give them. They do an excellent job.

Garden district holiday lights - Each mansion seem to be out doing the next

By Mark T |

For a cheap holiday experience simply drive down st Charles from canal street until it ends, each mansions seems to be trying to out do the next. A spectacular street of Christmas lights.

So glad we did a walking tour with Lucky Bean!

By HyMaryland |

We saw couples and groups doing the Garden District on their own. We decided to do a walking tour with Lucky Bean. We saw some stunning homes and gardens. If it wasn't winter, I would be out weeding my garden! I was so inspired by the blooms!

Worth a visit

By tachyonbb |

My first experience was in 1970 as I took the trolley from Tulane to the quarter every day for work> The mansions, schools and businesses were/are quite impressive. Katrina did not spoil the ambiance. Did a garden tour in the 80's with my spouse and every since then every house we see does not measure up. An amazing neighborhood, a unique neighborhood and an historically important neighborhood.

Nice to stroll through, but lots of construction right now

By Steve R |

This is a nice place to stroll through to see some beautiful historical homes. A few famous people live here as well. There are free walking tours if you have no idea where to start or what to see. There is a lot of construction on the sidewalks right now so quite a few street corners are closed but you can walk around. It just decreases the overall ambiance.

Guided Tour is Worth It

By Gr8TravelerTN |

We used Phantom to take a walking tour. The guide was fun and knowledgeable. It was well worth the small fee.

tried her best

By vinny l |

wasnt easy with impending thunderstorm and torrential downpours at times, but did her best even supplying to ponchos to people who wanted, sometimes the loud trucks nearby made it difficult to hear her, but again, she did her best without the use of any microphone device which perhaps are not allowed as they are on foreign walking tours

Relaxing and invigorating at same time.

By dbing1954 |

Beautiful homes - very kind and personable residents. Unique architecture. Some sidewalks were in rather poor condition so watch where you're walking.

Garden District Tour with Lee

By Frank P |

Lee was the best tour guide ever! We’re definitely coming back and will take another tour with him. Thank you!

Southern Splendor

By Gary W |

Step into a snapshot of time as you en walk the streets of the Garden District. Captivating architecture done Southern style with French and Spanish influences intrigue the eye. Each corner estate is large and evokes the horticultural essence supporting the area’s name. Make the most of your experience and learn the history through the eyes of a local guide. Timothy of Walking Tours narrates the city’s interesting and varied journey justifying the allure it commands today. The Garden District is one of many neighborhoods comprising NOLA’s Creole culture.

View some impressive houses

By 363cymru123 |

The Garden District is very impressive. Some of the houses are stunning. The ornate balconies with hanging baskets and rocking chairs on the porches are exactly as you would imagine them to be only more beautiful. Goodness only knows how much these kind of properties would cost to buy!! Go on the St. Charles St streetcar, $1.25 then at least we can look for free!!

Self walking tour a blast

By rockydogz1 |

We have found a wonderful app that lets you take your own walking tours worldwide. Fun walk with classic homes built in the 1800’s. Sidewalks and streets are in need of repairs so where sturdy shoes.

Beautiful

By Mariana Rodrigues |

It is an amazing place but the visit is better with a tour guide that can explain about the culture, architecture and residents.

Prettiest area

By Indianafamily0f5 |

This was definetly the highlight of the trip. Nice area and felt safer than rest of the New Orleans area

Beautiful Neighborhood

By DutchLace |

We meander through the area before breakfast. We figured we wouldn't remember who lived in the house originally, so we didn't take formal tour. Architecture and landscaping was beautiful. Be careful walking some of the sidewalks the tree roots are making some uneven. One home we walked by had a dog bowl and a drinking fountain outside their gate. Walked past cemetery on Washington St. It was temporary closed.

Beautiful homes. Christmas decorations up !

By JatJet |

Viewed homes from the trolley. Lots of unique restaurants and parks just steps from the trolley stops.

Awesome

By John A |

I really enjoyed this shady tour. That our guide was knowledgeable about architectural styles was significant for us!

Take a walking tour

By Mark F |

We did the Hop on Hop Off bus walking tour and enjoyed the sights and interesting history. Don't miss the Garden Corner Bookstore in the Rink Center.

Love the area

By Lori S |

We love to drive around and look at the houses. We've been through multiple times whenever we are in town. Wish I could remember where the stars lived lol We took a walking tour the first time.

Construction everywhere

By BWO |

I'm sure it would have been interesting if we had been able to actually see it. Construction seemed to covering up a lot of what we were able to see from our bus tour.

Awesome Area

By Scott T |

We loved driving through the Garden District of New Orleans. Such history and culture. There are an abundance of quaint little shops, restaurants and boutiques and the home architecture is noteworthy.

Our Walk through the garden district

By Maria Z |

Had an awesome time doing our own tour walking. Saw a lot of cool places of homes and businesses used to film for shows and game. Very humid in July but we found a Starbucks to buy drinks and cool off inside.

Fun day touring area.

By BarrieRes |

Took a guided tour of Garden district through Hop on hop off Bus tour. Although we were in New Orleans only for the one day we purchased the 3 day pass to get 2 guided tours for free. ( each were $25.00 if purchased on own) Tour guide was very pleasant and kept us entertained as well as informed about houses and some businesses in the area. Plan on walking on very uneven sidewalks as they are old and trees have pushed up slabs. Well worth the time to see this historic district up close.

Beautiful!

By Noelle |

Magazine street is awesome with lots of cool stores as well as the residential area having such a beautiful aesthetic!

Lovely streets for taking a stroll

By Tanya T. |

We visited the Garden District on a Sunday. For some reason, the trolleys were not running the normal schedule. Instead, we had to take a bus. Fortunately, there were city transportation workers there to give direction. It was a nice, sunny day so taking a stroll through the district was quite nice. We also stumbled onto an old cemetery. It was a challenge to find a place of retreat from walking, but there was a guy who sold $1 bottles of water at the cemetery entrance. Beautiful, stately homes stand side-by-side with perfectly manicured lawns. One can dream.

Go Talk A Walk on the Beautiful Side

By SUE S |

Please do not miss walking around in this gorgeous & historical area of NOLA. Great coffee shops along the way. Wear comfy shoes and watch the upheavals of sidewalks.

Self-guided walking tour was great, at own pace, own amount

By Departure528830 |

We used a free self-guided tour I googled online, for a taste of the Garden District, to see some beautiful houses, gardens/yards, and a cemetery. We did the walking tour items 1-14, until we got tired/hot. We will do the rest on another visit, likely.
Specifically we took the St. Charles trolley to the Third St. stop, and covered about 3 square blocks, and got back on the trolley at the Third St. stop also. It really gave us a good taste of the district, without being too much.

10/10 don't due the garden district tour

By Brandon |

The guide "bubbie" was absorbed horrible he had basic knowledge of the area at best. What information he provided was probably done in the few minutes before he started the tour. He said we would end up back where we started but we didn't and he was more concerned about catching his trolly.

Take the trolley along St Charles

By Oakville89 |

Amazing old houses. Lots of decorations Jan-Feb (Mardi Gras Season). The trolley will let you see it all. Jump off and walk when you see cool stuff

Beautiful

By babaamaadizi |

We toured and stayed in this district. The houses are amazing, and a must-see on a tour. The history is interesting as well, and I was amazed to discover most of the land was originally plantation land.

Splendid Grandeur

By must_travel_soon_10 |

There are some very grand historic mansions in this tree lined area. A great get away from the French Quarter. A good stroll or drive by with many stately homes.

Beatiful

By griff557 |

Took the St Charles Street car to the Garden District....an adventure of its own. We opted for the self guided tour which was fine we more or less wandered around the Garden District lots of very nice homes. The Lafayette No 1 cemetery is closed for rehab but you can look through the gates. Some of the sidewalks in the areas are a bit rough probably not exactly handicapped accessible

This City Needs Help - Don’t Visit

By Holly C |

Only decent area in New Orleans that hasn’t completely fallen to the depths of hell. I guess that makes it a main attraction for this area.

Beautiful

By jakebelle |

Such a lovely neighborhood to walk around in. Cute shops and restaurants too. Homes are amazing. John Goodman lives here

Lovely Homes

By Jean |

I loved looking at the different types of architecture as well as the homes dressed up for Halloween. NOLA really knows how to dress up!

Trolly ride

By Tansy2015 |

Took the green trolley through the garden district. It took about two hours there and back. $3 pp. worth the trip as you get to see the homes and not worry about the drivers

Beautiful, a must see part of town

By Clairesc06 |

Make sure you find time to visit the Garden District when in New Orleans, it is beautiful. Beautiful houses on tree lined streets, plenty of shops & what looked like lots of restaurants (didn't eat here but would have loved to if I had more time). Full of history it's a wonderful part of town - don't miss it!

walking tour

By Dena |

we enjoyed talking a walking tour of the Garden District with Tours by foot. Easy to get there by trolley and interesting facts about the area were shared. Would highly recommend this!

Beautiful Homes

By Rob S |

Never seen this many beautiful and historic homes in one spot. Be careful while you're walking though, sidewalks are in really bad shape.

Worth getting out of the city for this.

By AndyLKent |

Lovely area just outside the main city (exit city via Magazine Street). Superb local architecture, and some really nice bars and restaurants.

Love it!

By Joe A |

Visited the Garden District with my wife and just fell in love with the area. The peace and tranquility we experienced here was a delightful contrast to the chaos and decadence noticed on Bourbon Street. The foliage combined with the architecture and history of the area was a beautiful combination.

Don't leave NOLA without stopping by!

New Orleans

By Belinda D |

A great place to escape the hustle of the French Quarter. Beautiful houses and the best bookshop ever. You don't need an organised tour - kuray download a walking tour from the net and your're on your way. Easy trolley ride from the French Quarter. The Trolley Stop cafe is a must!

Garden District of New Orleans

By Compass781633 |

The Garden District of New Orleans is a walkable square area: St Charles avenue to the North, with the St Charles streetcar, large houses with historical plaques and immaculate landscaping. To the south is Magazine street with shops, restaurants, antique stores and other interesting venues. Also internal to the square are Lafayette cemetery no. 1 (albeit closed when we were there), the iconic Commanders Palace restaurant and beautiful internal Prytania Street. Bounded by Louisiana avenue on the west and Jackson avenue on the east, this is a beautiful walkable area and well worth the stroll. Just watch out for uneven pavement, as the roots of the massive southern oaks have heaved the pavers.

Pink House is Gone

By Anna L |

The iconic pink house is now painted grey. There were some pretty houses but nothing really “iconic”. I was on a short trip for NOLA so this honestly could’ve been something I skipped

BEAUTIFUL

By Heather G |

Mansions and Oak Trees with trunks the size of a Fiat! Not a place to eat or party...just a nice stroll

Incredible

By zombienic |

To be fair, we only saw the Garden District from the street car we rode to Audubon Park and back, but wow! The homes appear large in pictures, but are massive in real life. I was in awe but also felt a little sad that people need such extravagant homes when the city is full of homeless people. I can't imagine having that much space to myself (or needing it). One house was still decorated with giant pumpkins in the trees and orange lights-stunning!! A few looked like legit castles. Tulane University is a gem (sadly the only picture I took out there as we went at night)! I loved the architecture here. Looks like a lot of nice restaurants as well. Plus the beautiful plants, flowers and trees. Take at least an afternoon of your trip to NOLA and visit this area, you won't regret it.

Beautiful walking

By beernu |

During our walk it was super amazing to enjoy the fresh fragrances of all the gardens in full bloom. If staying in the quarter, best use the RTA to get there or it'll be a long walk.

History of New Orleans

By The Chow's |

Got to tour this with our guide Buddy from Hop on Hop off bus line. Tour comes with the 2 day pass purchased

A great walking neighborhood

By L F |

Lots of shopping and of course, great food! Must visit the Empanadas Restaurant. They even had Gumbo and Etouffee

Nice area but still be safe

By Pukeonthestreet |

Everywhere in New Orleans has sketchy people. All the locals will tell you not to go out at night. That being said this is the nicer part of the city.

Beautiful district to walk

By StephenCross |

The garden district is a beautiful place to walk through. The houses are magnificent and enormous. Lots of historic homes. Recommended.

AHS coven

By J B |

We went to the garden district to visit the house from AHS coven and it was gorgeous in person! So maybe beautiful mansions and houses in that area. We saw a few celebrity homes as well . If your in new Orleans it's worth a trip down to the garden district. Your jaw will drop at some of these magnificent homes !

Seems to have changed a bit

By FreeSpirit33527 |

I hadn't seen it in years, but it seemed that some of the houses had gone commercial, which was unfortunate. We did wander a bit, even to the cemetery, but it's closed for construction right now.

Amazing part of town

By Max G |

Such a quiet and beautiful spot in a busy town. The air was refreshing and I took a tranquil walk to look at the huge houses as well. Loved it!

Beautiful area

By Safari163623 |

Beautiful area. Try to go in the daytime. I suggest riding the trolley throughout. Get out and walk around at the park out there.

The Best of New Orleans

By Parsifal |

The Garden District is the best, IMO, place to stay and eat, in NOLA. The neighborhoods are great for walking and admiring the architectures. There’s easy access to downtown (skip Bourbon St — a tawdry, run-down amusement park for drinking) and the museums. The trolly (St. Charles line) is convenient, but can be slow and way off schedule — fun once. The restaurants — oyes.

Along St. Charles, closer to the warehouse district, pan handlers can be annoying.

Lovely walk through a lovely area

By Bikkabess |

A great find near the end of the streetcar from St Charles. Beautiful homes in a fantastic leafy area which truly gives the garden district it’s name. Self guided tour at your own pace is perfect to lose an afternoon

It's a Don't Miss!

By JoBoxer555 |

You cannot come to NOLA without discovering the Garden District. This area is such a perfect glimpse into the True South; it's gorgeous! Grab the Trolley over on Canal Street by the Footlocker's side windows, and get your $1.25 cash ready, to ride. You can also buy day passes, etc. Sit by the window, relax and enjoy. I ride down to The Camellia Grill to stop for a meal (pull the 'stop cord' above your head, once in the District, and the driver will stop in the next half block or so.) I then walk from that area to the Park, Zoo,Tulane University campus, and to enjoy the beautiful homes, massive and gorgeous trees, churches, and the air of history here. One of the best tshirt momentos in town, will be found at the Tulane University Bookstore, about a 7 minute walk on to campus. Just ask any of the kids where it is, and there will be a campus map, as you walk forward, as well. The building is on the left that houses the bookstore. Good stop to shop, restrooms, and for a cold drink, too. There are many good places to eat in this area, and you can always hop back on the Streetcar, if you get tired of walking. It's a "don't miss", when you visit the City.If you are lucky enough to be here about the 3rd week in April, the azaleas are stunning.!

Beautiful

By Raven G |

Very beautiful part of the town! Walking around New Orleans for our honeymoon was such a lovely experience!

Nice area

By funmaru |

We drove by on the red bus tour. There are more shops and restaurants here. If you have young children, you might be interested to know that there's a McDonalds and a Popeyes in this area.

Wonderful walk

By Harold S |

Spent an afternoon walking around and looking at the beautiful homes and the ironwork on many of them. Wish I had been here when the flowers were in bloom.

Come visit!

By Ginger B R |

Highly recommend coming down here. You can take the old streetcar from French Quarter. It's quiet here, and the old neighborhoods with the grand houses are something to look it. We ran across some people who downloaded a tour onto their phones, and were telling us who owned each house, and which were in movies. We found John Goodman's house this way lol! It's free and a different part of Nola that is worth checking out.

Gorgeous buildings, great restaurants and shops

By nylady21 |

We loved walking around and imagining living in the beautiful mansions. Great decorations for Mardi Gras with lighter trees, wreaths, bunting and masks. Magazine St has fantastic restaurants, bars and lots of shopping and people watching.

Gorgeous homes!

By mom.of.four |

We went to NOLA for a few days during the kids’ winter break.
This is one of the things I wanted to do and was not disappointed at all.
Me and my daughter enjoyed looking at all the houses and love reading the informations.
Got my steps in and had fun doing it.

I am impressed how the owners (new and previous) looked after their home. The architecture is amazing!

Take a stroll

By TimeTraveler0123_10 |

Beautiful area full of many varied and distinctive homes. We passed through as part of another tour.

Always a highlight of our trip

By Blair F |

Take the time to ride the St Charles Street trolley into the Garden district and walk the beautiful streets and see some amazing houses and landscapes. A walk down Magazine street will fill your heart with gladness.

Our self guided walking tour was exactly how you should visit this beautiful neighborhood

By Brown_Samantha |

We found a self guided walking tour online, so out we went on the St. Charles streetcar to explore this area for a few hours. Since the tour is self paced, it made our day here very relaxing. We got to see so many enormous and glamorous mansions. The architectures are to be admired.

You will get to see where some of the celebrities call "home", as well as private residence that retained the old charm. There are historical houses that are well marked.

The area felt very safe during the late morning and early afternoon time that we visited. Just need to watch out for the uneven sidewalks, often disturbed by the mature trees! It took us by the Lafayette Cemetery, as well as the famed Commander's Palace and Le Petit Bleu.

Beautiful home.

By sanana12 |

Took a garden district tour and loved all of the history, architecture and simply beautiful homes. If you love big houses with lots of character you will love to spend sometime walking around the garden district.

Charming neighborhood and great place for a long walk

By Herb L |

The Garden District has some lovely homes with interesting architecture. With decent weather it is a great place for a long walk. We did one of several miles and enjoyed it greatly. One drawback was some of the crowds around celebrity homes. Really aren't they entitled to some privacy?

Free walking tour in the Garden

By Vicki N |

The homes were fun to look at. There are no "gardens" to speak of for people to see. The sidewalks are awful to walk on and are difficult if you have any balance or walking issues.

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!

By dianne C |

No matter where you are staying in New Orleans, this is a must see! You will enjoy the beauty of old historical, rather grandiose homes, surrounded by trees, plants and various greenery. Absolutely beautiful architecture. Take the streetcar to go there. It is inexpensive and offers a scenic view along the way.

Beautiful Harden Homes

By Barbara M |

We got a map of the Garden District that identified homes with a particularly interesting story. Think we got the map at Commanders Palace, where we went in to make reservations. The walking tour was fun. We could stand and look carefully rather than quickly pass by in a bus.

Very insightful Tour

By Zippy B |

The tour began at a small cafe in the garden district. About eight people were on the tour. The guide was super informative and had a great sense of humour. The architecture is beautiful. Not for people who can't walk distances.

Beautiful estates without the rowdy

By Sherry B |

Stayed in the Garden District for the week we were there. The estates and hotels are absolutely beautiful! Enjoyed being away from the business and rowdy crowds in the French Quarter when we wanted to wind down away from it all. Very quiet area. Would stay here again.

Nice place to walk around ✨🌹🏡

By 𝑲𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒂 🦉 |

The tram dropped us off and we took a walk around the magnificent houses, admiring the place. It was after Mardi Gras, and there were beads hanging off the fences and trees.

Beautiful

By Melissa Rod |

I absolutely love the walk around the Garden District all the houses were so beautiful and big we even seen the house from the American horror story covent . They also have a cemetery there and little lizards are roaming every step you take.

Definitely worth the side trip!

By dkc_liv |

Easy to get to by bus. Lots of beautiful old homes (small mansions I guess ) from the 1800s. Great stop

Gorgeous tour of area

By Brenavon2006 |

Gorgeous homes all around. Everything is so well kept and neat looking. The history of this area really shows through. You can tell people are proud to live here!

Gorgeous mansions, but watch your step!

By risinggr |

There are some amazing mansions in this area, but the sidewalks are old--brick in some places--and raised by the old trees so watch you step.

Nice but…

By Mrs. B |

Beautiful architecture but don’t go to the edges of this district. Not safe and quite unsavory.

Nice homes and a suitable walk. Hardly any foot traffic. We walked from the district to the old cemetery. Big mistake. Within a few blocks we found ourselves in a very dirty and dangerous area.

Charming, at its Best

By Tim |

We had a walking tour with a very knowledgeable guide, who knew her architecture and her NOLA history. This is comfortable, laid-back New Orleans, a far cry from the French QuRter.

Lovely area

By Apopik |

Worth a tour as the history is interesting. Some truly beautiful homes and lovely architectural details.

stunning

By chlene36 |

I viewed this area by street car. Impressive homes with beautiful gardens. My next visit will spend more time on foot in this area.

Drive By

By Lapolla |

You should not miss this. We drove our car and looked. But the more adventurous will the the time and the trolley.

Camellia Grill, Carrollton Avenue

By Ballantine04 |

While attending Tulane in the mid-60s, the Camellia Grill, located where the St. Charles trolley turns on to Carrollton Avenue, was an after Mass habit on Sunday. Entertaining service, fabulous food (nutty waffles, pecan pie). Although the staff has changed, the friendliness remains. Prices are higher than they were in the 60s, but which aren't. First time visitors or old timers like my wife and me, the Camellia Grill should not be missed.

Okay

By linda Smith |

Nice ritzy clean area part of town. However not overly impressed. Not sure why they call in s garden area. I didn't see much garden or landscape. I was little underwhelmed

A must do tour!

By Larry I |

We had an excellent, informative tour with Harris. He is a local and very knowledgeable about New Orleans! He was engaging the whole tour and very humorous. He answered any questions the group had.

Fun tour of the Garden District

By Lisa K |

A must do tour. The Garden District is beautiful and steeped in history. Our guide Betsy loves the homes and her enthusiasm shows in the tour. We left the tour with so much information and a new appreciation for these homes. We highly recommend this tour.

A Stroll Back In Time

By SoHo |

The garden district feels more like a lived in neighborhood than the Quarters though both are historical, well loved, well preserved areas that many New Orleans call home.

You can take a guided tour or you can download a self-guided tour map and stroll at your own leisurely pace to take a gander at the beautiful, ornate, historical mansions and gardens of the Garden District.

When you're ready for break, there are score of excellent choices down St. Charles and Magazine street. Vintage Cafe is one of my new favorites.

The Garden District can be accessed from the Quarters and CBD by both bus and streetcar making it a very easy day trip destination.

However, due to age and gnarly roots of massive, old trees, wearing sensible shoes is a must. For these same reasons, getting around by stroller or wheel chair can be challenging on some streets.

If you want to take a stroll and travel back in time without the noise and chaos of the French Quarter, then head on over to the Garden District get lost in a time gone by.

Beautiful times

By Kerry L |

It is so absolutely beautiful here. The houses and trees, the food, everything is amazing. We loved riding the streetcar to and from the French Quarter!

Great walking area

By karyej |

Lovely area for walking and taking in some history. You can easily download tours on your phone and learn a great deal about this area. Easily accessed by trolley.

Old charm

By Charles V |

Our family home was in this area and it has maintained most of its charm. Took the family by the old house and drove the streets we played in on summer breaks love it

Historical

By Selena M |

Quaint little district in New Orleans which had a colonial vibe going on. We spent the afternoon walking Magazine Street, found a free library by the fire station (got a book), enjoyed a vanilla lavender latte (sounds nicer than it tasted) and then enjoyed dinner at Coquette

Large spread of nice looking houses

By Farzdude |

A large spread of nice looking houses. Although we didn’t take any professional tour, we got to see a lot of houses on our own. Worth the walk, especially when it’s not too hot or sunny.

Beautiful

By ellsee74 |

We took the trolley to the Garden District. The homes are beautiful and the gardens are lovely. Every where u look the architecture of these homes are amazing. Just be careful walking since a lot of the sidewalks are uneven and streets are tore up for repairs.

Fantastic Garden District Tour

By Melanie Faith S |

Tyler brought the history and architecture of the Garden District alive. Fantastic tour guide, fantastic experience. Wear good walking shoes and carry water.

Beautiful homes

By Barb8662 |

The garden district has so many beautiful homes. It is such an eclectic area, you won't see the same style repeated over and over. It is a nice way to spend the day. We saw Ann Rices former home, which is under renovation. Also saw what was visible of Sandra Bullocks home. It is surrounded by high hedges. For history buffs, you can walk past the Payne-Strachan where Jefferson Davis dies. There is a commemorative placard on the fence outside the home. The garden district is also home to many great restaurants and shops.

Simply Gorgeous Homes

By 60seattle |

Lovely, gorgeous, ornate homes. We walked the neighborhood for a few hours enjoying all the beautiful homes. We felt very safe in this area. There is free parking on the streets everywhere in the Garden District. No issues whatsoever.

Beautiful Homes

Beautiful homes here! We love the Spanish and French influence in the area. This area has a wonderful, rich history. Just park the car, and go for a stroll!

Gorgeous part of New Orleans and easy by streetcar

By Vieuxcarre |

Riding up St Charles Avenue on the Streetcar (the oldest continually running streetcar in the United States) and hopping off for a walk through the Garden District is an essential thing to do when visiting New Orleans. Extraordinary homes, beautiful gardens, and fascinating history line the streets. Walking tours are available and very worth doing if you want to learn the stories behind many of the homes, as well, as why this area of the city developed in the first place. Should't be missed during a visit.

Beautiful residential walk

By montanapescado |

This is as fine a concentration of residential architecture as you could ever hope to see. There's some real variety, but it's all very New Orleans. Weather permitting (if it's not too hot and himid), this is an excellent half day walk.

Basically, I want to live here

By Jill U |

You could seriously spend hours here, checking out all the beautiful houses and all the beautiful trees. The ground is rather uneven. But I absolutely loved this.

Historic homes

By Emptynestb4long |

If you visit, take a tour, or all you will see is pretty homes. There's so much history here, it would be a shame to come and not have someone to guide you along.

Walk and enjoy the homes, then shop and dine on Magazine Street!

By Sarah M |

We spent a good 6 hours in this part of town. We didn’t want to spend money on a walking tour. Instead I downloaded the free Atlantis Audio Tours’ app and bought a pre-recorded walking tour for a whopping $1.99. You can listen to it or you can read it - whatever you choose. (There are 6 total tours for NOLA plus tours for other cities.) (Lafayette Cemetery was closed for repair, sadly.) This was a great option for us as it allowed us to go at our own pace (and save a bundle of money) and it was very informative. I think it was spot on because we walked past several guided tours and the guides were saying much the same thing that the pre-recorded tour told us. It took about 90 minutes.

We ate at Red Dog Diner and Rum House (I had the yummiest vegetarian tacos I’ve ever had). Did lots of shopping to. Check out Zele, which sells merchandise by tons of local artisans.

A glimpse at Antebellum life

By Andrea Donzelli Nails |

Gorgeous neighborhood with mature trees and historical homes. Definitely worth seeing. It would be nice if a few homes were available to tour.

Always pretty

By JJBlondie |

The Garden District is very pretty. We got dropped at Cemetery No 1 and then wandered around. My previous visit here I did a tour and I strongly recommend doing that rather then wandering aimlessly.

The houses are beautiful and there is so much history.

Blocks and blocks of beautiful mansions

By California_momofsix |

In my opinion, the prettiest district in New Orleans. Many Southern towns have a few stunning old houses, but the garden district has block after block of beautiful mansions with cast iron balconies. There is also an old above ground cemetery.
Our hotel was located here and we loved being away from the more crowded French quarter area and would definitely stay here again. There is not a lot of available parking, you may get lucky in the side streets. I would recommend taking public transit (street cars) to get there. Make sure to leave St. Charles street and explore the side streets, the most beautiful homes aren't visible from the street car. I would further recommend finding a free tour route online to follow. We downloaded a garden district tour and would have never learned so much about the history and architecture if we had just walked around on our own.
Magazine street has many quirky shops and restaurants. For a quick bite, I recommend Dat dog. Hot dogs of all kinds with unlimited toppings.
I took off one point because the sidewalks are not well maintained (why? Clearly the owners here could afford to contribute to upkeep of the streets) and I tripped a few times. Also many stores and restaurants were closed due to covid as was the cemetery. Restaurants and stores I understand but why close a cemetery? Social distancing is easy while outside. Be prepared for a few homeless on the main streets, the side streets seemed safe and quiet. I hope this area can be preserved.

Beautiful

By Michelle F |

The houses are beautiful, with an old world charm. Great place to causally stroll around and take in the architecture.

A stroll through this storied area is the best way to see the city

By Holly B |

A stroll through this storied area is the best way to see the city in its glory- the architecturephotography is breathtaking plus there is phenomenal shopping and restaurants.

Interesting Walk

By rhundt67 |

Visited the district while in NOLA from Wisconsin. The homes and their history in this area is simply amazing. The cemetery was closed so we were unable to visit but still an interesting view. Ultimately, the teens really wanted to see the famous Buckner Mansion - filming of American Horror Story: Coven!!! Made their day for sure!

Take the Tour

By danielh318 |

You can pay for a tour, but we did the AAA walking tour (in their AAA book) by ourselves. Took about 1 1/2 hrs. Take the Garden District Trolley, walk a couple blocks & then the tour starts. We ended at La Gassi's place & the cemetery. Then caught the trolley to Camille's Grill for hamburger & shake. Took the trolley back. Great day.

Have to see this part of NO.

By Matt P |

Took tour of the Garden District. Learn alot about this area. So many interesting and beautiful homes to see and learn about. I was fun to walk around see the homes.

Better than expected

By Dropsof-Honey |

I would highly recommend visiting this neighborhood!

Go with some guide tours.

The stories behind the houses, the owners and details are pretty lovely and interesting.

I loved this place.

It took around 2h.

GORGEOUS MANSIONS

By Miles Archer |

I did a walking tour on my own. Lovely mansions from the Nineteenth Century. Lots of trees and gardens. Very scenic.

Stunning Residents

By Sabra W |

Stunning residential community. It is a residential community, so be respectful.
Also, go in with a plan. Being that it's a neighborhood, houses and parks worth seeing are spread out and you could find yourself wandering about.

Definitely worth the visit. So different from the grunge and hustle of the French quarter.

Beautiful and charming!

By Abby M |

The houses and gardens in the Garden District are so beautiful and charming--you could spend days walking around the area. We took the St. Charles Line and found a fun quirky breakfast place (Molly's Rise n' Shine, I think.)

This is THE NOLA architectural tour

By Ccari01 |

A trip to NOLA should include a stroll around the Garden District. It is an easy ride on the Saint Charles Streetcar or by Uber from the main tourist districts of the city.It is a residential area so be mindful of people’s privacy .What impressed me the most are the beautiful ironworks. From the impressive mansions to the cute cottages, the ironworks stand out -the balconies, the fences, the posts, the gates and even the mailboxes.Save a day to explore this area.

Wonderful Area To Stay In NOLA

By Voyage755389 |

I have visited NOLA twice and stayed in both the Warehouse District and the Garden District. While both have their own charm, the Garden District is a much nicer area. The Garden District gets you out of the concrete and crowds of the city but still has a wide variety of restaurants and bars. My family stayed a week at the Wyndham Avenue Plaza on St. Charles Avenue (which is a wonderful place). The St. Charles streetcar is a convenient and affordable way to get to Canal Street and the French Quarter. After a full day exploring the FQ, it was lovely returning to the quiet green of the Garden a District. Highly recommend the GD for a stay in NOLA.

lovely part of town

By PRHughes |

We passed through on a bus tour. Lovely properties, probably v. expensive. Some famous people lived in this area.

Don't Miss This Important Part of New Orleans!

By Mrs. Romence |

The Garden District is exactly what I imagined New Orleans would look like! The homes were so beautiful! And the trolleys running up and down the street gave it that perfect New Orleans feeling. I am very glad that we were able to walk up and down this beautiful section of the city. It is a long walk from the French Quarter or Jackson Square, so I recommend that you take the trolley to visit this part and then you can stroll through the beautiful neighborhood. Side note: the trolley does not give change! You pay $1.25 per person or purchase a city pass to ride them. It does not take long to walk around this area ( less than 30 minutes) but I highly recommend that you make the trip. As others have mentioned, even though this area is nicer, I do not recommend walking the streets at night.

Quiet.

By Patricia J |

Quiet, cleaner than French quarter. Couldnt get in to the commander, went to Joey Ks, great alternative.

How the other 1/2 lives

By cynthia |

Georgeous houses.... beautiful area....take the green trolly and dream of how the other 1/2 lives. This area is quintessential southern wow. (Says a 5th generation Californian. :) :)

Touring with Baraboo Tours.

By Kandie B |

I went with Baraboo Tours. Our tour guide had everything ready and waiting for us. She showed us around New Orleans only the way an experienced guide could.

Gorgeous houses!

By Claudia H |

House like in a magazine, trees like a forest, a great expirience to appreciate the French Architecture

Nothing to see except old and beautiful houses

By joak3 |

We took a tour there. I didnt know that the tour was only about walking and seeing houses. I could have done that on google street lol. There is nothing to see there on my point of view... Yes there is beautiful houses but its the only thing to see.

Great place for a self-directly walking tour!

By sescovitz |

it was fun to do our own walking tour of this lovely area near downtown. Lovely homes and a contrast to the busy French Quarter.

Southern Elegance At It's Very Finest

By JamMags |

Take the walk, and then take it again. The homes are breathtaking, the treelined streets have a whimsy about them, and the air seems cleaner. Find yourself a self-guided walking tour and hit the streets. It's a pretty incredible place to see at your own pace.

Beautiful area

By carol c |

The Garden District has the most decorated or wealthy homes in NOLA. Beautiful grand old homes that are lovely.

Self-Guided Tour

By Jim M |

We finished a tour of the WWII Museum and decided to experience the Garden District. We viewed many historic homes and reviewed the signs many had in front of them that told their story. We loved seeing these homes!

Beautiful homes

By Anna D |

The achitecture in Gerden District is a must to see. Simply ride the street car along St. Charles street. It's a great way to admire the homes.

Tranquil and very pretty.

By rhdtravels |

A beautiful and quiet part of New Orleans. Ride the trolley and disembark for a walking tour. Lovely architecture and gardens.

Beautiful district of New Orleans

By CasandraTP |

If you are in the French Quarter the cheapest and easiest way to get there is on St Charles Street car. You can get all day tickets for $3 so you can get off anywhere you like. I would leave early as the street cars are not air conditioned but having the windows up helps. The houses are beautiful and everything you expect them to look like. We even found the AHS house if that is of interest.

Go on the tram!

By Janet T |

Catch the green line tram at Charles street. Ride all the way to the terminus and then change sides when you come back. You can see all the beautiful houses on either side of the road. Really long ride but worth the $3 daily ticket.

Even though I have been to New Orleans many times this walking tour provided a different depth and perspective on the history, our guide was well informed not to mention the exercise. Check out Twi Chicks Walking Tours

By Taylor M |

Excellent tour to take in New Orleans! Our tour guide Jackie was amazing! She is so sweet and personable! You can tell she gives these tours with great passion to ensure you get all the history behind each place in the tour! Very refreshing tour!

Absolutely beautiful

By D Packer |

This area is a must see! The homes are absolutely beautiful. If you take the hop-on, hop-off bus tour, you can leave the bus at the garden district stop and walk around the district. For an additional fee, you can join a walking tour of the district.

Beautiful

By maritimeramman |

Ride the St Charles streetcar and admire the beautiful homes!
They are often decorated by season or events such as football or mardi gras, Christmas...

Gorgeous

By A1313Y |

Def take a walking tour. Its a nice escape from Bourbon with some of the most beautiful architecture you will ever see.

The History, The Vibe, The Sights and Sounds. Your either love it or hate it. I Love it and can't wait to return!

Cool houses

By bcspoon |

After going to the French Quarter, you must go to the Garden District to see how the other half lives... Very big and nicely preserved houses.

Cool. Hip. Walkable.

By CES122 |

Hundreds of large houses. Worth the one hour to drive, walk, ride the Streetcar. Stay on St. Charles. Schools, churches, High Society of NOLA. Then go to Magazine Street and shop and eat. Start at District Donuts or Joey K’s. Read a good tourism article.

Must see in NOLA

By lucycan |

This really is a must do in NOLA. Take the St Charles line out from Canal and get off about Jackson. Google a walking tour map/guide and spend 1-2 hours checking out the houses, cemetery, and businesses.

Amazing

By Love New Orleans |

First time in this neighborhood and it is so different from all others. The architecture and design of the homes are lovely. Can't imagine the price tag on some of the homes though.

Must see!

By Lizchasteen |

Don't visit New Orleans without making it to the Garden District. Take in the architecture and history that this part of town has to offer. I highly recommend doing a walking tour of this part of the city. We were bummed we couldn't enter the cemetery during this visit.

Garden District and Story telling Tour

By Felix |

Lesley, our guide, was so good at talking about this beautiful area of New Orleans. She stopped at different spots along the way to talk history, architecture, celebrity, film locations and New Orleanian culture. All of it was so interesting. It was a shame that the heavens opened but Lesley took us quickly to the Irish pub Tracey’s where we had a beverage while she fished the tour inside where it was dry.

Beautiful Old Southern Homes

By Suzanne L |

This is an interesting place to stroll down the side walk and see the most beautiful beautiful old southern homes. The main street has some enjoyable eateries and retail. There is a particular retail shop that has many local crafter and artist as well as vintage shops under one roof. The artist are available for some custom work as well. Nice way to help the locals.

Saint Charles trolley is running!

By Randy M |

St Charles trolley line (number 12) is currently under repair in a short segment from Canal to Lee Circle. Number 12 bus will take you on same route to beyond Lee Circle where you will transfer to the trolley which runs to the end of the line.

No need to purchase day passes ahead of time because they are sold cash only on trolley or bus. 80 cents for a senior all day pass is best bargain in town. We used Canal Street trolley as main transportation from riverfront to end of line 48 City Park and 47 cemetaries. 48 passes Winn Dixie and Rouse's grocery stores.

Sadly Garden District shows wear from recent weather events but still beautiful.

Quiet beauty, fancy mansions

By Heather S. |

This is, by far, the fanciest place in NOLA (IMO). filled with million dollar homes, this beautiful neighborhood is where all the fun happens come Carnival season. Definitely a great location if you are looking to avoid the drunk crowds of Bourbon St. and the French Quarter.

Fabulous tour!

By DebLH3 |

We absolutely loved this tour. If you have the opportunity to go on this you should. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and energetic. The homes are gorgeous and we enjoyed learning about the history of the the area and the homes themselves.

beautiful homes

By TorontoMusicman |

a nice area to visit away from the crowded and noisy French Quarter.
They have some really nice homes to explore. There are many walking tours of the area that are on offer.
The cemetery however was closed.
We had the best meal of our visit in this area for substantially less than in the French Quarter.

Worth a more in-depth exploration

By Jim W. |

We only had 1 day to tour the 'high spots' of New Orleans. We took the streetcar out of downtown to the Garden District for a pre-lunch walk.

I would hardly say we did this expansive neighborhood justice in our limited stroll. They appeared to have a lot of nice old homes paired with odd, gnarled old trees in some cases. We literally passed 2 groups taking walking tours of the neighborhood. Under different circumstances, I'd have liked to have been on one of them. As it was, we satisfied ourselves with a short stroll through some representative streets before giving in to the lure of lunch. The homes we did see were (often) noteworthy. It definitely seemed like an area worth more time and attention.

Even after lunch, we were still walking through a business district on Magazine Street that billed itself as part of the Garden District.

If I returned here solo or with more flexibility, I'd investigate guided walking tours.

a different world from the French Quarter

By JenniferandAlan |

My husband and I have visited New Orleans many times and we always take the green St. Charles streetcar from the French Quarter to the Garden District. We board at Canal and Carondelet and get off at Washington. From there we visit Lafayette Cemetery (Lestat's haunt), Anne Rice's previous house and the setting for her witch series, and the pillared mansions. They are so opulent and huge and each is different from its neighbor. The architecture is awesome. There are also a few shotgun houses. The trees are magnificent stretching across the streets but beware when you are walking because the sidewalks are very uneven due to the roots of the trees. The curbs can also be quite high in places. Be sure to visit The Rink for a bookstore, shops, and a quick snack with coffee and a clean but very small restroom.

Amazing back to the past....

By Luca D |

Amazing place to see!!!! Houses that let you breath the importance and power of some people and the beauty of this neighborhood is unbelievable

Not that much to see - Shops are good.

By DebRussell49 |

Perhaps had we been there to try one of the restaurants, I would have been more impressed. The architecture is lovely but not awe inspiring like the plantation tours were. The Shops on Magazine are interesting but did not live up to the hype.

Beautiful neighborhood to walk around

By Chad N |

We did not take a tour but rather just took the St. Charles streetcar up to the Washington street stop and got off there. From the stop one can walk one block over to The corner of Washington and Prytania street and the

Classic

By CayUcusZ |

So many great homes from a different time and architecture. You can spend a few hours touring the area on your own with the help of free walking tours, or take a guided tour of which there are many. Not a lot of places to grab a bite or cool off with a drink, so it might be best to visit during the early daytime. The sun and humidity can be quite overbearing, and we were there during the spring "cool season". Definitely worth seeing as a contrast to the French Quarter.

Perfect location

By Anabel F |

A beautiful area with historic architecture. Trolley runs through the district making it easy to go just about anywhere. Quiet makes for good sleep. Only down side is the uneven sidewalks.

Don't miss this when you visit New Orleans!

By Tylerx2 |

This is a very cool, old neighborhood with amazing houses and yards. A ton of history here! The Lafayette Cemetery is closed so that was disappointing, and Commanders Palace requires pants, no shorts; plus I think their reservations get full so call ahead. The sidewalks are often cracked, broken and lifted by tree roots; exactly what I like in an old neighborhood like this. The streets are fairly clean.

Beautiful area of NOLA

By Paul B |

Take the streetcar to the end of the garden district and slowly make your way back towards downtown. There are hundreds of beautiful private homes to look at and many streets to explore. There is a huge city park as well as Loyola and Tulane Universities to explore.....wonderful!

Stunning Look into City's Past

By tprindy |

This was a highlight of my visit here. Beautiful homes and gardens to view. The high-society neighborhood with displays of wealth that boggle the mind.

Good tour of New Orleans Historic Homes

By highlandbeachflorida |

Enjoyed a tour of some of New Orleans famous historic homes in the Garden District. Several streets to explore in the Garden District are easy to navigate on foot

Architectural Tour

By Louise J |

Our group attended an architectural tour here. Homes & gardens were amazing & well tended. It is better to have a guide to explain most structural differences, but well worth a visit.

Love wandering the Garden District!

By LittlePaint |

I always see tour groups listening to all the details and history of various houses, but I really love just wandering, checking out the architecture, enjoying the flowers, and immersing myself in the possibilities of the way life used to be when these homes were built.

For the price of the streetcar ride (40¢ on the St Charles line) for seniors, you can't hardly beat it.

Great location to stroll and see life outside the French Quarter

By William S |

The neighborhood is flanked with scores of historic homes, some that you can visit. It's grandeur is something special to take in. I had not been back for 20 years and it was magical all over again. There are several tours of the Garden District but you can also do a self-guided tour with downloadable audio. We also saw a traditional N. O. funeral procession and a film crew working on a movie..

Very nice old homes

By Moonraker |

Very cool old neighbor hood. Lots of nice old homes, great area to walk around and dream of what it's like to live there.

Soooo beautiful

By AliSpekterman |

Gracious, stately homes, lovely tree-lined streets, the garden district is of another era and is aptly named.

I would love to have booked a tour

By chattygirl7491 |

love strolling around these beautiful homes and mansions. gorgeous landscaping. ironwork lots of history. A tour would have been interesting, but you have to plan ahead and we didn't know what our schedule or the weather would be.

We just parked and walked around for a little .. nice to get out of the noise and pot of Nola for a bit.

Get there with a guide or skip it

By Madeleine |

Alright, first of all - the garden district is an area where most houses are family homes, so you can mostly see them from the streets. In a lot of these streets there are no tourist friendly attractions, a few buildings have signs where you can read about the story’s, but there isn’t many cafés or similar around.

At the time when we went there, the graveyard was locked down due to construction and since there is high walls around it you can’t see anything which was unfortunate.

If you, like me, have seen a lot of family houses in the US this isn’t that special. For a country that doesn’t really have a long history, these houses are old - but for a European like me, it isn’t that’s special. If you want to have a stroll during the day in a more quiet area than French Courters and already is in New Orleans, it’s worth a visit. But don’t forget to bring water, because there is a while to walk from the street cars and buses before you get to the street with stores and lunch places.

In total, it’s a nice walk and cozy neighborhood, but not that impressive. If you want to actually have a better experience, you should probably take a guided tour.

Away from French Quarter

By Angela B |

Rode the St Charles trolley out to this beautiful neighborhood. The houses are lovely. Also walked over to Magazine Street to eat dinner and browse the shops. This was a great way to spend the afternoon away from the French Quarter and see a different part of town.

Beautiful homes!

By TravelingKeyes |

Don’t miss this gem while in NOLA. Beautiful homes & great dining options too! Many homes were decorated for Mardi Gras which was a neat sight to see!! Can take the St Charles streetcar line to see!

Nice tour

By Barbara H |

Took the streetcar, viewed the garden district love all the historical homes. Gave us a good look at another part of New Orleans away from the tourist areas.

Great Garden District Tour

By Robert W |

We took the Garden District tour with Buddy. He is an excellent, very personable tour guide who lives nearby and really knows the history, architecture, people, and other interesting features of this neighborhood. Highly recommend.

Take a tour of this area to get the history.

By 723tami |

Loved the history and the gorgeous, historical houses. Must walk through with a tour guide to truly enjoy! Take a camera and plan for early in your visit to get all the information you need to plan.

A gorgeous place to walk and look

By Brandon K |

This is a great area that I enjoy visiting in town. Go on a good day when you can walk and see the houses and check out the restaurants. Take a tour in a bus or with a walking group. You just have to come and enjoy. And while you are here, stop by Pascal's Manale or Commander's Palace if you can.

Good and not so good

By BandCTravel |

We road the trolley
The driver was very nice
Very clean and a nice ride but no AC.
The windows were opens we did have a little breeze
For $3.00 one can get a pass for the day on any transportation so that is good. We took the bus home. Again very nice driver and very clean bus
But almost nothing is open anywhere one goes😳

Favorite NOLA Experience

Must visit! What a gorgeous collection of architecturally significant homes. Beautiful neighborhood. Amazing history. Gorgeous homes. Wear comfortable shoes.

The Prettiest Part of Town

By Thomas V |

A great way to see this upscale neighborhood is to take the streetcar. The architecture is unique and stunning and the big houses are surrounded with gardens. Get off the streetcar and take a walk around or arrange a walking tour. A must.

Ride the st car here and then walk

By travelgal1994 |

Lots of beautiful homes to see in this area. The landscaping is so beautiful. If you are careful you can walk for miles and really enjoy the area.

Plenty of unique and interesting homes

By Thekansaspyet |

We took the St. Charles Street trolley from near Canal Street and went to the end of the line. At the end of the line, the conductor tells everyone to get up, switch the backs of the seats to the other direction and return to your seat now facing in the Canal Street direction. The huge old ever spreading live oaks are fantastic along the route, homes are both small and grand, but all are unique and mostly well maintained. No better way than to leave the driving to RTA and enjoy the sights and take photos.

Great district to stay in

By Coastalbunny |

We found staying the Garden District is the way to go when visiting NOLA. The trolley will take you into the city, just a 20 minute ride away. There are many dining options in The Garden District with lots of sight seeing options. St Charles is on the Mardis Gras Parade route. Fresh Market is convenient for almost all your needs. The streets are safe for walking, jogging. Avoid the city noise and staying in the Garden District.

Stunning.

By NativeCalGal |

Hop on the streetcar ($1.25 cash) and see the beauty of the architecture and gardens. Tulane and Loyola are on St. Charles Avenue, too. Then hop off and wander Magazine Street for great cafes, shops, galleries.

Garden district self guided tour

By Alyssa J |

Lovely, historical area to explore. We did a self guided audio tour and it was great. Lots of history. Might do a guided tour next time to have the opportunity to ask questions.

Nice but small. Tough walk because of bad sidewalks and some roads.

By Ken B |

Typical mansion row. Not very extensive. But of course some incredible old buildings. I expected more but still enjoyed our walk.

Interesting

By Roses |

Took the street car for a round trip ride through instead of walking.
Fantastic architecture and gardens.
Very beautiful and unique neighborhood 💐

Beautiful District

This is the prettiest part of town, the place where you will find gracious homes and some great restaurants. I stayed here with a friend a long time ago and it was fun to come back, ride the street car, walk around. Just lovely.

By Molly1107 |

Lovely area, homes beautiful.
Felt very safe walking around.
Nice restauarants, cafes, shops on Magazine St.

great walking experience

By Cloud5 |

Worth taking the tram to the Garden District if you dont want to have to do a paid walking tour. Its such a beautiful place with all the lovely houses and the old oak trees lining the streets. Nice cafes to stop on the main street too to have a break for coffee/ice cream. Well worthing going to see how the other half live in New Orleans.

Nice place for a walk

By Julyeth C |

It is not a place you would go if you were short on time in New Orleans, but it is a beautiful neighborhood. If you go up on the street car to the Garden District, which is a nice ride, it is nice to have lunch at Commander's Palace and then take a leisurely stroll around to look at the houses. If Commander's Palace is too pricey or just not for you, there are several casual places on Magazine street that are good.
