Big crowds

This is one of those places that has to be seen in person since pictures don't really do it justice, It's a miracle of road building and views that can not be surpassed,

Words cannot express the beauty

By travel644 |

This is one of the most beautiful areas of the United States we have ever seen. Words simply cannot describe how beautiful it is. Before arriving at Glacier, we read a lot of reviews talking about how busy the park is. In our opinion, compared to parks like Yellowstone or the Great Smokies, Glacier isn't at all busy to the same degree. In any event, it did not deter from our experience. We drove the entire length three times during our stay, and mountains seem to change every time depending on the weather. We made ample use of pull offs to take photos, to let hurried drivers pass, and to just sit and take it all in. Even weeks after returning home, we look back on this road as a life-changing experience. This road is the crown jewel of the park and the nation. Enjoy!

Pretty sure my wife was thinking about divorce about half way up. Lol

By twysted2015 |

We were camping at the koa and drives to go check out the park around 3 pm. We knew we needed a permit but didn’t investigate so we’re were expecting some possible issues. Found out all permits were already given out for the day, but she said at 4 pm you can go in without one. Great, so we went back to town to kill some time and bought some groceries and then headed in at 4. 15 to 20 minutes into the park my wife was taking pictures of some mountains and then said she saw vehicles up near the top and I replied without thinking or even looking, no dear don’t worry you must be mistaken. Ten minutes later we start the climb and my wife was in the passenger seat on the cliff side and she had pressed herself so hard back into the seat it is now permanently milder to her outline. Once she stopped swearing at me and settled down we loved the road up. Lots of pullouts and we didn’t have issue getting into them on a Sunday. We had good weather and the photos we took were amazing. We only went to the top and then turned around but I was also astounded by the feat of engineering it took to build this amazing road to the top of the peak. This trip is a must do if in the area. Just be aware your wife might not be happy with you. 😄

Beautiful scenery

By 🌍Travel-Uwe🌎 |

At the beginning a beautiful lake (Lake Mc Donald), then it goes with many views-
score over Logan Pass and finally back along a lake
(St. Mary Lake) - fantastic views guaranteed!
Much is reminiscent of the Alps - at the two lakes you think you are in Canada....
With the most comfortable (unfortunately but also the most expensive) variant, you start from a lodge in Glacier N.P.
Wherever it starts - I recommend
definitely leave early.
Anyone who has already traveled almost to the border with Canada should definitely visit the Yellowstone N.P. With its wildlife and hot springs, it is even more spectacular than Glacier NP.

A must-see!

By 860SusanB860 |

This is a beautiful, scenic route that connects East Glacier from West Glacier and was just cleared of snow this year on July 17th.
The pull-offs along the road provide gorgeous views of turquoise rivers, snowy mountain peaks, grassy meadows, and powerful waterfalls. We drove the entire route both directions and stopped for many hikes along the way.
This is a must-see!

Very crowded

By Earle W |

First thing to know is you can only enter from west side--the east side is closed. So its was very crowded and at the end you have to turn around and come back. This has something to do with the virus. It is still beautiful and well worth doing but keep in mind many ,many- I mean many of the fellow travels there that you will encounter will not be wearing masks-- Why I do not know?

Breathtaking!!!

By rdburrows |

Every part of this drive is beautiful and breathtaking!!! Take your time and enjoy it!! Way to many people get in a hurry!! Enjoy the pull offs and take in the views!! Get out of the vehicle and take it all in!! We chose to drive on our own that way we could go at our own pace!!! We went the end of June and it was the first week that the full road had been open!! So glad we got to experience it!! We decided to drive east to west to avoid all the traffic coming into from the West!!

Amazing!

Put this in your bucket list. The park is breathtaking , around every corner is more of God’s wonders
Saw a bear eating berries!

DOI/ NPS get your act together and manage our National Park

By Christine |

I first visited Glacier National Park with my family in the summer of 1974. We were traveling in a Surburban and towing a small tent trailer. A ranger directed us to pull into a pre-measured space in the road to determine if our vehicle's length and width were acceptable. The ranger used a pole to measure the height of our vehicle.
I was in awe of the "Going-to-the-Sun Road". The majesty of the mountains and glaciers were breathtaking.
Fast forward to Sep 15, 2023. I was appalled at the staff, both lack of and quality of service, the lack of parking at Logan Pass Visitor Center, lack of signage especially on the West side, and the unsanitary condition of toilets in the park.

The vehicle pass system stopped after Sep 10th. We entered the Park on the East side on Sep 15th. It was a free for all! No staff at the gate. Not one oversized vehicle was stopped from entry to the Going-to-the-Sun Rd. These oversized vehicles created a back up on the Going-to-the-Sun Road, when an entire lane of vehicles had to pull over to let them pass.

We noticed that 2  cars did fill out honor system payment cards; a few like us pulled into the St.Mary's visitor center, and the rest kept going.  I approached the desk in the visitor center at 8 a.m. to show my pass and stated that no one was on duty at the entrance. The Park employee was NOT interested in seeing my pass and said "Not to worry, a ranger would be on duty in the afternoon at the West Entrance to see my pass". The Park employee also stated that we were likely already too late to find a parking spot at Logan Pass.
Also. the bathrooms were closed for cleaning even though the visitor center opens at 8 a.m.
We were able to find parking spots as we drove the Going-to-the-Sun Road with several EXCEPTIONS including Logan Pass which was a zoo.
At the West Entrance Visitor Center, there was a very long line outside at the Information Desk which had only 1 employee. Inside the gift shop, there were 2  GNP Conservancy employees. A visitor with cash and no other way to pay was turned away.
The concern expressed about the shrinking glaciers was NOT apparent by GNP the day we were there. If DOI was doing their job, the Entrances would be staffed, Park and Conservancy employees would act like they care, the toilets would be clean, and there would be a better parking solution.
I heard multiple excuses,
- the season is over so the staff is gone.
-Information on passes for your vehicle and the Going-to-the-Sun Rd are on the website.
-we are a cash-less society

That's the point. The excuses do NOT address the problem.
DOI/NPS get your act together

The views are incredible, lots of huge pine trees, the guide was very knowledgeable, The Garden wall was also amazing.

Not all the way open on July 4... :(

By amyg68 |

We've been planning this trip for a long while and got our road pass months ago. We were super disappointed to see that on July 3 the road was only open to Avalanche Creek. Usually it's open all the way by this point but due to large snowfall they are still breaking through 40 foot deep snow in the middle. It looks like you can ride bikes in the closed section past Avalanche Creek (no snow there, just closed to cars) but we didn't have reservations for e-bikes and they are booked far in advance. In our 2 days at the park so far we've hiked the Trail of Cedars/Avalanche Lake trails, we kayaked on Lake McDonald and had cocktails on the beautiful porch of the Lake McDonald Lodge (highly recommend, great views and you don't need to be a guest to do it!), and hiked along the North Fork trail of Lake McDonald. We probably would've have done half of that if we had the whole road open...so maybe less is more? But this part of the Going to the Sun road is not mountainous at all...it goes around Lake McDonald and is very forest-y in other parts. So do not expect to see sweeping vistas of mountains...they are snow capped and distant from you.

Blocked for roadwork

By Mike H |

We have been to this park twice in the last 3 years. Love it but every time we get there the road is closed. Last time they still didn't have the snow removed in July and this year we were 1 day late and they had the road closed due to repairs. From the pictures we have seem from friends that went it is a 5 but maybe next time. Just make sure you check before you go to find out if the road is open.

A disappointing road

By alpw |

My husband and I were on a road trip and Glacier was a stop. Unfortunately, the Going-to-the-Sun road was not fully open. About half of the road in the middle was close to traffic. Nice views of what we saw, but still disappointing. Be sure to get the pass to use the road. This reduced the number of cars on the road and made the stops easier.

Windy Road and Incredible Views

By PandaHouston |

We visited Glacier NP on Aug 31 and Sept 1 during COVID. Due to COVID, the entire Going-to-the-Sun Road was not open as it normally is. The GTTS Road stopped at Sun Point and everyone has to turn around.

However, the section that is open is still breathtaking. I would also recommend hiking the beginning parts of the Highline Trail for aerial views but you will need to arrive early at the Logan Pass Parking Lot for a parking spot.

There are some turn off spots along the road where you can park and catch the views.

If you are prone to car sickness, the windy road can make you nauseous.

USE ALTERNATE ENTRANCES

By Bill R |

Such a beautiful place, so much wildlife and views that will make memories for a lifetime. Problem is, if you didn't make reservations 2-3 months in advance, you won't be able to get in the park during normal business hours at the most popular/accessible entrances of the park. If you don't have the passes required to enter 6AM-5PM you will have to use some of the other unmanned gates to enter. Roads are pretty rough but worth it to get in without the early wake-ups.
So sad that they limit the park like that. It really has no effect when you leave other gates open. Traffic was pretty mild the 3-4 days we went to the park.

Stunning views around every turn!

By Jerri L |

This entire drive had the most stunning views from the vehicle and overlooks if you are unable to hike any distance. There are pullouts with waterfall views, mountain scenery and wildlife. Absolutely worth a trip and spending a day or more if you have time. Vehicle reservations are required west to east between 6AM-3PM. East to west requires no reservations (at least for 2024).

Drive part of the Going to the Sun Road in Winter!

By Heidi g |

We entered “the road” in Apgar at the southern base of the lake and were able to drive all the way to the top - Lake MacDonald Lodge . We drove as far as we could get into the parking lot of Apgar Village Lodge and took in the breathtaking views of Lake MacDonald with the mountains around it! “The road” was recently plowed but snow-covered ice. Our vehicle was all-wheel drive but no snow tires. Hubby is a seasoned Michigan driver on snow and ice and it was slippery, but we were able to go about 30 - 35 mph at most and stay safe (turns were tough and we did swoosh into a light and fluffy snow bank but came out of it unscathed!) On our drive up the road, we saw waterfalls on the right in the hillsides, glimpses of the lake on the left, deer crossing the road, and other wonderful things. There are several turn outs on both sides of the road so you can park and get out and be out of others’ way. We only saw that getting to the shore of the lake was on foot going down rocky, hilly land and in the winter with ice and snow, a bit challenging but you can do it! At the top of the lake, where the lodge is, and the road closes for winter, we saw a few cross-country skiers and snowshoers. Very lovely drive! Once back at Apgar, we drove around to the side of a bar/café and in the back of the building are public restrooms – the water in the sink was COLD! The air from the hand dryers was COLD! But so worth it!

Gorgeous Scenery

By traveling_with_kathy |

Had a mix of rain and sun the Sunday I drove the road. Fall colors highlighted the forest. The road is tight and curvy. Beautiful vistas around every bend. With the clouds and sun there were gorgeous rays of sunshine making for perfect pictures. I went to the end of the road at St Mary. That entrance is closed due to COVID. I was amazed to see how many different license plates I saw - Hawaii, New York, Maine, Massachusetts, Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and more. Glacier National Park is a true American gem. Highly recommend.

Epic views the entire drive! Take your time and enjoy this amazing drive.

By Day Hiking Duo |

Starting at either end you see majestic peaks towering above you. As the road climbs you are up among the peaks looking down on where you were earlier. A thrilling drive!
A must do if visiting Glacier National Park. You can watch our video of this drive on YouTube. (Day Hiking Duo)

Amazing views & Crazy Crowds

By Aaron B |

Visited 9/11/20 and it was our first time to GNP. One of the most amazing parks we’ve seen and the Going to the Sun Road is almost indescribably awesome. We arrived before sunrise because we’d heard crowds are continuing to get larger and larger and parking at Logan Pass and Avalanche area is filling up earlier and earlier in the day. Being in the park an hour before sunrise still wasn’t early enough for us to beat the rest of the crowd. The east side of the park is closed (thanks, Rona) and there were no shuttles or tours bringing people in, so vehicle traffic is heavier than normal I’m told. I’ve never seen a Nat Park this crowded! It was very difficult at times to navigate the precarious road due to vehicles being parked where they normally wouldn’t be and visitors hiking in the middle of the road because they had to park so far from the sites and they have no place to walk except the road which makes it dangerous for drivers and hikers both. We will have to make another trip in the coming months/years and hopefully things are back to normal and allows us to take in the full beauty of GNP! There are several hikes we’d love to do, but we’ll have to wait until parking is back to normal. While circling the lot at Logan Pass for an extended time, we did experience sunrise which was totally incredible! Away from some of the busier sites, we found a lot of pull offs to take in the gorgeous vistas and breathtaking treasure that is Glacier NP. We’ll be back and it’ll be hard to top what we saw!

Must do

By Tricia |

Must Do!!! Amazing drive with the most beautiful scenery. Get on the road early it gets crowded. We pulled over at almost all the areas available. Which was such a good idea…on the way back across when we were tired we could just drive and not worry about stopping at anything

Spectacular!

By Joan G |

Gorgeous scenery! We were able to see this just after they opened an additional 28 miles of road beyond Logan’s Pass. The mountains, valleys, and waterfalls were spectacular! We also saw a big horn sheep cross the road, a mountain goat, as well as red colored squirrels, chipmunks, and I think Marmots. We also took a short hike to Baring Falls, which was beautiful!

Breathtaking scenery

By chb86 |

You are driving along this road if you are going to any of the trails but you should take a day just to do the entire road and pull over at all of the stops along the way. When we did this, we were able to see a grizzly bear eating berries and a momma black bear with 2 cubs. Also, the views are amazing. You'll want to be able to get out of the car and just take in all the views which will include a glacier, mountains and waterfalls. I simply cannot express how beautiful this park is and this Buckeye plans on visiting again soon.

Beautiful views all around!

By AJtravelz |

This is by far one of the best routes to take in Glacier National Park. The views during the drive were stunning, and we found ourselves stopping at different points along the road to take in all the scenery and of course, plenty of photos! There can be some traffic as you reach the summit and the road narrows. But usually that was in the morning and closer to the late afternoons. We did this drive several times during our stay in the park and at various times of the day. Each visit was a unique experience as the sunlight and shadows in the valleys were different each time. My favorite time of day for this was late afternoon/early evening as the sunsets here are gorgeous.

Breathtaking views!

By joyrodolico |

We were in awe at the scenes we saw. The vistas were beyond anything we have ever within in the 50 states. (Reminded us of Switzerland). We really enjoyed this using the Red Bus Tours as driving up here would have not been easy for us being seniors. What a treausre.....

Kind of disappointed

By Bridget M |

First, no where did we see before we got to GNP that you need to book a reservation for the road. And then they charge extra for that, BS. It's almost the only road in the park, you need it for all the hikes, and if you access it from the west you need a reservation.

it is absolutely beautiful, no question about that. But the chaos of it all makes the other national parks stand out as better

Book your trip around or after mid-July to lock in this entire road

By The Places Where We Go Podcast |

As the whole Going To The Sun Road was not yet cleared and opened during our visit to GNP (late June), we travelled the road on the west side all the way to Avalanche Lake. We stopped at most turnoffs between the start of the road and this area. On the east side a few days later, we travelled similarly, stopping at nearly every turnoff through the final available stopping area which was Jackson Glacier. Our longest stop on the east side, was at St. Mary Falls where we spent a couple of hours making our way to Virginia Falls. This hike was the highlight of our eastern GTTSR journey. Hopeful we will return someday to drive the complete road in a season when it is completely open. We were glad to experience as much of the road as was available to us this season.
Even when the crews get the snow cleared, there is still work to be done (clear rocks from the road, install guard rails, etc. – so your webcam views of snow conditions are not the complete story to this road being ready for your car)

Glad I was not driving

By rogersober |

Scenery that cannot be well described is everywhere on this trek. The frightening heights could only be outdone by just how much you could see. The road is a marvel for the single switchback on the west side. The pull outs were breathtaking. This is not to be missed.

WARNING TYPICAL GOVERNMENT MESS

By Sirbennie |

BEWARE!!!

This is the most mismanaged (typical government) park ever!!! You have to plan your trip well in advance in order to get accommodations, etc. YET... you only have a small time frame to get the "entry pass". You have to get the regular pass also, which what good is it when you have no entry pass. Our Government is falling apart. It is only getting worse. Our rights to see OUR park is being violated by a lottery. I called where we are staying in Kalispell and they said the whole community is upset too, especially businesses because everyone is cancelling. I woke up at 7 AM,(on the day two before our visit)went to my computer and waited until exactly 8 and was immediately told there were no tickets available. Not only that, but a service in the park said they had no availability because a lot of people are buying tours to get a entry pass, then not showing up, only booked for the pass. That makes it unavailable to everyone else who wants to take the tour. And you cant stand in line for a cancellation, because you cant enter without a pass. WHAT A JOKE AND HUGE DISSAPOINTMENT. Our government does not care about all the people that loose money, time and vacation experience. I don't see why they are doing this, as some say. They should not make you wait until 2 days before your trip. There is also 60 days before (1 time only), but some people don't know this. They should not allow you to by the more expensive pass (regular park pass) having you purchase the entry pass at the same time. That would stop the problem. But they want the money, so of course they wont do that, Big let down.

Beautiful park

By Tom B |

Glacier National Park has been on my bucket list for years. My wife and I attended a Lions Forum in Spokane last week and had an extra day for sightseeing, so we chose to Glacier Park. We rented a Suburban in Spokane and drove 5 hours to the park.

The drive through the Idaho panhandle and Montana was beautiful with big lakes, rivers, mountains and more. However the park itself was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been.

Mountains, waterfalls, rivers and more.

We didnt get to see the glaciers because Going to the Sun Road was closed in the middle of the park for maintenance. We knew this before leaving, but decided to go anyway. The trip was still worth it.

Road to the sun is exhilarating

By Terry T |

Wow! We were on the road at 7am and there was no traffic. The further we went the more in awe we were. The drive was terrifying at times but the road was well designed with turn outs and viewing area so I could capture the best pictures. Each turn got better and better!
There was no Parking at Logan Pass, which was disappointing but everything else was amazing!

Glacier

By Jane R |

It is a beautiful drive. We are not hikers so we didn't stop much. Been to many places just as pretty. The lake was really beautiful and did enjoy the drive across the "going to the sun road."

Outstanding tour

By Yvonne W |

We took the Going to the Sun Road trip today. Kylie was our guide. The trip was great and Kylie was so informative and professional.

Kylie made sure we saw all the highlights and gave us plenty of time at each site to take pictures and explore.

I would highly recommend this tour and company.

One note be sure to bring your own drinks. They provided a great lunch but no drinks.

A Normally Drop-Dead & Gorgeous Drive...Spoiled.

By MaryEllenM27 |

This year, 2021 we drove the Sun Road in its entirety on July 10th. It was a disappointing day for several reasons. Parking lots at all trailheads along the road like Avalanche, the Loop Hairpin, Logan Pass, Sunrift Gorge and St Mary/Virginia Falls were full. Every parking spot in Apgar Village was full, including the Visitor Center/Transportation hub, the boat dock and picnic area.

It was dry way too early in the park for July 10...the river was low, the weeping wall was barely wet, some of the major waterfalls like Bird Woman were not so full of water. Normally, in early July... Bird Woman falls has billowing skirts from more rivulets pouring over the precipice just above the falls... the skirts fan out like an antebellum ball gown. A a couple of falls were totally dry. There were none of the normal "ephemeral" waterfalls along the Alpine Section of the road.

Lunch Creek Cascade just below Logan Pass was roped off for trail-hardening so you could not go up along the cascade like normal.

The restroom at the pull-off just after Jackson Glacier was open and we were able to park and use those.

Sun Point was the first place where we did find parking but the skies had gotten so smoky there was no point to hike or try to take photos...unless you wanted photos of the hazy/soft focus skies. The views of Wild Goose Island were also super smoky.

There was not a single tall, white stalk of Bear Grass plume any where in the park...no matter the elevation. The normal wildflower meadows at Two Dog Flats were crispy dry and brown. There were a few Indian Paintbrush blooming and some Cow Parlsey up along the road.

It was also a very smoky and very un-seasonally HOT day so if we could have hiked or walked around for photos we could not...or chose not to do so. Temperatures began at 90 degrees early...reached up to 105 degrees in the late afternoon and never dropped below 100 except for later in the evening as we drove though the shaded canyon along the #2 highway.

The smoke got thicker as the day progressed and our eyes began to really hurt.

This Summer if you plan to drive the GTTSR, start early in the day so that you arrive at Avalanche, Logan Pass or St Mary Falls on the east side by 7 AM or parking will be full...double check the fire/smoke pollution thread on the Glacier Park forum. It will also have health warnings on it and daily updates from the MT. Dept. of Environmental Quality. (DEQ)

Entire drive is beautiful

Amazing road with amazing views. I drove early morning and late evening so I didn’t encounter too much traffic. It’s the only road that I’ve ever actually seen fallen rock!

Park and Ride

By Cakes77 |

An unforgettable experience made much more enjoyable when you take the option to park and ride.
You can take one of the famous, long red taxis or a shuttle bus.
When you do this, it doe five good things. It is good for the environment (which you must care about, or why would you be here?). It saves gas, it reduces traffic on the mountain, it makes parking available at the lots for others, and it frees you up to safely take pictures and actually totally view what you are passing.
Do not take this road for granted, the entire road is only open for a few months of the year do to snowfall or construction.

Bucket List Worthy Drive

By joysclind |

Driving this road is definitely a bucket list item. During high tourist season reservations are required from
the national park system. The road is absolutely stunning views of snowcapped mountains lakes rivers streams and an abundance of wildlife and waterfalls . I would highly recommend this to any nature lover

Beautiful day turned into a nightmare drive

By Judith59_10 |

We had stayed in Whitefish the previous evening and entered the park at 9am and planned a gentle drive around what is supposed to be a beautiful drive and we had a pre booked 2 pm boat trip on St Mary's lake on the other side of the drive. It was all beautiful with leisurely stops until we came to road closure sign at 11am and a ranger who informed us that Going to the Sun road was still closed due to snow! At no point had the ranger at the entrance told us this nor had there been any lit up signs telling us either. So our leisurely day turned into a nightmare as we had a 3 hour drive to get to St Mary's lake the other way. As we left the park we checked for signs- there were none. We made the boat trip after a mad dash with 5 mins to spare. We stayed in Many Glaciers that night. Realise it can't be helped when snow still blocks the route but being from UK we assumed if nothing was said at entrance then it was open ... never assume!

Amazing Drive to the Top of the World 🏔

By SCoxygenman |

This is definitely one of the most scenic drives in America. The views are breathtaking. The pictures do not even compare to the feeling you will have from the top of the mountains unlike any other. Make sure you get a park map when you enter the park. There was no phone service or GPS at all when we went up there. There is alot of pull offs, many trails some easy off the road and some advanced depending on your motivation. I would recommend going in the middle of the week vs a weekend. There is still lots of people but its more manageable. Make sure you drive slow, lots of walkers along certain areas of the road. Don’t take a large vehicle the roads are very narrow in certain places with sharp turns. The east entrance in St Marys is closed so don’t try to enter the park from that direction. You can go as far as Sun Point before you have to turn around. There is a nice parking area and bathroom there with some good easy walking trails down by the lake where you can get good pictures, but then again you can get great picture everywhere. Its a beautiful place you’ll never forget.

ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ROADS in the WORLD

By JuneNY |

A drive along this road, stopping at lookout spots is an amazing experience. There is just SO MUCH beauty! We were fortunate to have a perfect weather day. I thoroughly enjoyed the GOING TO THE SUN Road, and would like to do it again.

This is the road to Logan's pass

By Robert P N |

Start at the Glacier Lodge, and then take the drive almost one hour, that winds and turns, make plenty of stops, it is worth it to see the falls, the river, the valley and the lake. The road ends at the top of continental divide at Logan's pass,. Note: there are nice clean bathrooms at the top. Have fun.

Must be pretty in the sun!

By Mary L |

Glacier Park in the fog and rain is not worth the very steep price of admission (no day passes!), since the expansive views were obscured and the narrow, winding road carved out of the mountain is scary. (Tho' everyone drove slowly and carefully.) However, we did see occasional misty mountains and valleys, and the lakes were still pretty, so I feel good recommending it for a sunshiny trip. BUT a plus to going in clouds is few crowds. I understand they can be awful, especially since you can only stop at viewpoints. We had the Lake McDonald shoreline to ourselves. We did have one amazing experience: we saw a young Grizzly bear on a ledge overlooking visitors stopped in cars and a shuttle.

A Glorious Day Along the Going to the Sun Road on the First Day of Fall 2022!

By MaryEllenM27 |

The first day of Fall 2022 was just glorious. Clear blue skies...not even a hint of smoke, few crowds, 69 degrees, and fabulous colors all around.

The trees & shrubs along the road & across the valley floors were just beginning to turn yellow & bronze, grasses were turning all shades of Gold and Rust. The higher in elevation you drove, the more color you would see. Bright red berry clusters on Mountain Ash shrubs. Brown flat convoluted seed heads of Cow Parsnips were so interesting to look at.

But the FIREWEED along the Sun Road was the highlight of our day. This was the first time in over 25 years of driving the Sun road that we saw the spectacle that was Fireweed in the Fall.

In Summer Fireweed fields have plumes of lavender flowers but now...in fall, it's foliage had turned a deep burgundy and/or a vibrant red. The seed-head stalks had turned to hot pink with silky white tendrils just waiting to be lofted off into the wind. There were fields of them along the Alpine Section especially at Big Bend where there was also plenty of parking.

On the eastern side there were more trees, shrubs & grasses turning color than there were flowers. St Mary Lake was surprisingly still since it was a rare non-windy day. It was a very deep blue and that accented the red color in the Mountain Peak tops above the lake.

The Logan Pass visitor center was not open but the accessible restrooms were. Parking at mid-day was hard to find but before about 8:30 and after 4 PM we found parking easily up there. There was a constant turn over of parking spaces at all the pullouts along the way.

We saw one mama deer with two fawns, but no Grizzly Bears, Mountain Goats or Big Horn Sheep. We did not see any of the cute round eared Pikas or any Marmots. But the scenery made up for that.

At Avalanche there were quite a few parking spaces when we arrived around 5 PM. Which was fine for taking the Trail of the Cedars before the late afternoon shadows began to darken the skies as the sun sank behind the tall ridges west of Lake McDonald. Actual sunset that day was at about 7:35 PM.

I highly recommend driving the Going to the Sun Road during the waning days of September. Dress warmly, bring your camera and binoculars.

Unforgettable

By CharmLA |

This is the most important thing to do in Glacier-National-Park. If really want to cover all the hikes may need 3-4 days. But worth it. Will go again. Better go early as possible to find parking. Parking was hard and very limited at Logan pass.

Wow 😮

By Mike C |

Traveling this road never disappoints me. Great views, a well maintained drive and plenty of areas to pull your car 🚗 to the side to take pictures or just simply enjoy nature. Can’t wait to go back.

Check it’s open before you go

Drove up all the way from Utah only to find the road was closed for the duration of our stay!
Make sure you find out the status of the road before you make the drive...

Check the weather

By Deborah F |

Visited Glacier in mid June 2022 and looked forward to doing the Going to the Sun Road. We were not able to make it to the top due to extreme snowfall and danger of landslides. They were actually still plowing the roads ahead of where we had to turn around. We were disappointed at not being able to go all the way, but the sights we saw were certainly worth the trip! Mother Nature alone is to blame. I read the road finally opened completely mid July!

Can’t get in without separate passes :(

This place is amazingly beautiful. BUT they only allow you to drive Going to the Sun road with a pass, even though you already buy a park pass. We drove 5 hours to go to the park and couldn’t even get in because they don’t sell passes for the road on site, and we didn’t know ahead of time that we wouldn’t be able to get in. That was a load of BS! Get a better system!

A Must Do!

By Ashley C |

After being stopped in both sides of the park bc of the road being closed…it opened on our last fully day! Beautiful vantage points, well worth the drive!

Mesmerising Road

By Durga M |

We had to take reservations for going to the sun Road and it was really a trips to be embedded in memory with clear water lakes, winding roads, occasional visit by the Animals.
Not to forget the beautiful trails
Should not be missed

Breathtakingly beautiful!

By RDH2017 |

This 50 mile stretch of road has some of the most gorgeous views of any place I've ever seen. We traveled from the West entrance to the East entrance first. This drive takes you more along the edge of the cliffs. We then turned around and drove East to West hugging the rock walls. It was like two completely different vantage points but both equally mesmerizing. Allow plenty of time to stop and take photos, hike, or just enjoy the magnificent scenery. We felt like we experienced all four seasons during our drive. Sleet, rain, fog, mist, and finally sunshine.
Interesting fact: The beginning scene of the movie The Shining was filmed here.

Must Do

By mike h |

Beautiful 42-44 (depending on which sign you look at) mile drive each way from west entrance to Rising Sun. East entrances are closed due to Covid, so you must turn around. We did the drive twice in 2 days. First time we stopped along the way at the turnouts on the right hand side and went to the end first on day 2 and worked our way back. Go early or late as midday is congested. Logan Pass is always full and quite frankly not worth the battle for a parking spot in our opinion unless you are doing a hike. Do not miss the river and waterfall stops early in the drive, they are gorgeous!

Best road trip!

By Salty and Sweet at Perdido Key |

Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous a thousand times! Plan a day so you can stop and take in the beauty. Eat a picnic lunch. Walk a trail. Amazing place!

Memorable drive

By dixiepeach |

This drive is simply stunning! Be aware that many parts of the road are very narrow. There are numerous points along the way where there are pullouts to take photos or even have a picnic. There are also a few toilets along the way. The visitor center parking lot up top gets very crowded so don’t count on parking there. We tried once at moon and another day at 4 PM and could get in either time.

Forge Through the Crowds to Witness the Crown of the Continent, Going-tothe-Sun Road

By Leslie J |

We drove the Going-tothe-Sun Road two days after mandatory reservations ended. It was very crowded. We had to skip several overlooks, hikes, and visitor centers due to the lack of parking. This is why I rate it as four not five stars. We did turn off to visit Lake MacDonald Lodge. The setting and lodge itself are spectacular. The gift shop is quite nice here. Be sure to walk down to the lake to witness the colored pebbles visible through the crystal clear water. The crowds can't take away the majesty of the views. The scenery changes dramatically descending to St Mary's Lake with the trees bearing the scars of a forest fire.

Start driving early!

By TLusi |

Parking lots get crowded, so get there early to park.
It is a beautiful drive with a lot of stops. Jackson Glacier was one of my favorite overlooks.

Not for skittish drivers or those with fear of heights!

By cowankelly |

If you don't have a road pass, still worth checking it out after 5:00. Still plenty of light and saw a momma Grizzly and cub while driving through around 5:30 pm. Be prepared for traffic jams (due to congestion and animal sightings).

Almost a ruined day

By rockcole |

We have been to most of the National Parks and as far as scenery this Park is by far the prettiest. You drive along the going-to the-sun road. It is single lane each way but plenty of opportunities to park. It took us three hours and worth every minute.

We entered at the East Gate and ran into a problem. They are limiting the number of cars - you need a reservation. It was 9 AM and the ranger said generally reservations open up around 11. ???

Fortunately the ranger at the entrance booth mentioned that reservations were required unless you have a National Park Senior Pass! We do!!Thank You!!!!!

Surely it would have been spectacular

By K B |

At our visit early June, Road was only open to Avalanche from the West and Jackson Glacier from the East. Rangers didn't have any information as to when the entire road would be open. The parts we got to see were beautiful
There is an interesting book you can get at the Visitor Center that discusses geology along the road. It was frustrating not to be able to do the whole thing.

Beautiful!

By 62barb53 |

It is hard to describe how amazingly beautiful this is! Glaciers, rock formations, rivers, lakes, snow covers, wildlife and beautiful wildflowers. I recommend taking a tour so you can relax, leave the driving to experts and listen to their stories.

Avalanche Lake is stunning

By Rajkumaran D |

The road was not open all the way when we visited but the hike to Avalanche lake was a lot of fun. At the end of the 2.5 miles hike you get to see the beautiful lake and lot of water falls! We had just a few hours in the park and ended up choosing this hike and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Jaw-Dropping Scenery at Every Turn

By TrailTrekker15 |

I spent 3 days exploring Glacier National Park in late September. The arterial I used was the Going-to-the-Sun Road. I had heard how it is one of the most scenic drives in the world. That statement is 100% true. At every turn of the road, a new vista opened up before me. The way the road hugs the side of the massive mountains is astounding. It is amazing to me that the engineers in the 1930s could even envision a road along that route. The tunnels themselves are worth stopping to walk through as they are engineering wonders. Even if you can’t hike one of the amazing trails that are along the route, the drive itself is rewarding and worth traveling to see. I highly recommend driving the road at least once in each direction to get the full views.

ticket system sucks

By Kim B |

I tried to get Going to the Sun tickets 60 days in advance and then for six straight days before our trip. Tickets sold out in less than 60 seconds. Imagine our disappointment that we had to wait until after 5:00 pm every day to enter the park. We flew all the way across the country to visit Glacier Park.

A random lottery in advance would have been better. Then, if you didn't get tickets you can pick a different vacation spot.

A Must Do

By Mom2Twincesses |

Though the two lanes can seem a bit tedious at times, I completely appreciate the engineers not destroying more natural beauty than absolutely necessary to preserve this heavenly place. Take your time, make the stops, and have your camera ready!

Beautiful Drive

By trophywest |

Beautiful views. Due to late snow, the roads hadn't been fully cleared at the end of June. So we made due. Saw the western portion then drove the long way around to the eastern portion. The eastern portion had the more stunning views. We found wildlife along the way also.

Few Options

By TriciaGrace |

If you want to get to different areas of the park, this is one of the very few options. The scenery is ordinary for the first part of the ride. As the elevation increases, the views are lovely.

Gorgeous

It was a long road to get to this road (from Omaha, NE), but it was worth every mile! The view from each bend and turn was spectacular.

Wow! There are no words to describe! We saw a bear come p from a steep side and straight up the other granite wall!

By uniquelyus |

Wow! There are no words to describe! We saw a bear come p from a steep side and straight up the other granite wall Scary road to drive if you do not like steep, very steep drop offs and very tight narrow roads! Still we always manage and enjoy!

A must do!

Well worth waking up at the crack of dawn to spend the day driving the Going to the Sun road and through Glacier National Park. We saw bear, mountain goats, glaciers, lakes, and more!

Beautiful Scenic Drive

By Sarah C |

If you visit Glacier National Park, it's hard NOT to take this drive. That being said, there are steep drop offs and in some places, no guardrails. If you are apprehensive about driving the road yourself, you have other options. You can take a ride in an iconic Red Jammer or hop on the free park shuttle. All of these offer you the opportunity to travel along this engineering feat. There are multiple pull offs and areas to stop, stretch your legs and take in a view. The road does climb quite a ways, so be prepared for changing weather conditions as you drive through Logan Pass. Additionally, the weather on one side of the park can be starkly different than the other side. So be prepared with layers and patience. For up to date road status information and road conditions, check out the park's website.

Don't come before July as part of the scenic drive may be closed

By koabug |

We planned a couple of days to visit Glacier National Park but part of the scenic drive was still closed as of June 24 (it opened up on the 25th but the park rangers couldn't tell us a definite date). You need a day pass to get into the park between 6 am and 5 pm but the place was already busy with people coming in before 6 if they didn't obtain a day pass.

On the 24th we could only go as far as the Trail of the Cedars location and parking was crazy at 6:15 am, You could travel on the closed section of the going to the sun road on foot, bike, or other non-vehicle means. The reason why the whole road was closed was that they were putting up the guard rails along the road.

We decided to travel along Hwy 2 to get to St Mary, a 3 hour drive with some road construction happening around the 15 miles mark from the west entrance. Once at the St. Mary's entrance we could travel 14 miles on the scenic route and the views was gorgeous. we lucked out and saw a mother bear and her cub as we were leaving the park. Two Medicine and Many Glacier were open but since we had to drive the long way we didn't have time to see them.

Words can't describe the beauty

By Nathalie F |

It's true: you can't describe the park really. You just HAVE to go. Take the whole route! Llarge RV's are prohibited, so rent a car in advance, at least for a day. We used the shuttles for a day and then rented a car all day. Best to stop at the viewspots early in the morning or later in the afternoon. It was quite crowded during the day. And hike! There are trails for everyone, even with smaller kids. And bring enough food and drinks! Not much to get on the road.

Thank goodness we got tickets to get into the park before arriving!

By Karen J |

Thank goodness that we got tickets before arriving! They are good for 7 days, so I was online at 8 am a week before our trip to get a ticket. I would have been quite upset to arrive and be turned away until 5 pm. In July, I heard that there will also be a shuttle bus, as well. I think a lot of people didn’t get the memo, so we had many portions of the park all to ourselves, which was wonderful! The gift shop at the visitor center had a line to get in, so we visited the gift shop in the park. We took LOTS of photos at the many pull offs. I was quite pleased that the gas prices were reasonable around the park! We also visited Glacier Family Foods for some snackies on our way out (including stuff from their clearance section in the back)!

As for unimproved toilets, those were quite nice! There weren’t many people and there was a brisk wind, which kept the smell down. WOOT!

Nice drive…. Slightly Disappointed

By TOURtheWORLDMexPal |

We started the drive at 10am at East Glacier Entrance (our ticket entry started at 11am at west gate) and ended the leisure drive at 8pm at Many Glacier Hotel. With 13 stops; one hour lunch at Lake McDonald Lodge and 2hours hike at the Trail of Cedars/Avalanche trails.
You need a ticket ONLY to enter through West Glacier Entrance TIMED for 2-hour window, ONLY if you plan to enter 7am to 3pm, no ticket is needed outside this time frame. You must have the ticket reservation online through the official park website. It is TORTURE by all means to get the right time. 2800-3200 tickets open randomly for the 2 hours times….. So, must put alert on the website and use either your cellphone or email that alert you immediately to your cellphone. Within 10 minutes, all tickets will be reserved. Their website and alert system are terrible and often dysfunctional. I could not get the alert on my cellphone although I signed up for the alert to go to my cell… only goes to my email, which not set for every message alert. (Personal reasons… for no distractions at my life and work).
PLAN AHEAD. 6 months in advance. Low Your Expectations, if you just want to drive the GTSR with few stops and minimum hikes for the half day.

The Beauty of it All

By Ross A P |

We had been at Yellowstone a couple of years back and met some people telling us we needed to do this park. It was now a top priority on my bucket list. We had reservations for last year and had to cancel. We stayed at the Edelweiss in Whitefish which was less than a hours drive to the park. We did Going-to-the-Sun Road on four separate occasions because we were in the area for a week. Of course the weather is critical in getting the pictures that you want. Our first day was on a Monday and rather overcast and windy, Wednesday was to to be sunny. We were certainly hoping to see the mountain sheep and goats but we learned that we were somewhat late for them. We did however see a brown bear near the road in which I assume a Park Ranger had pointed out and was nice enough to give us time to take our pictures. All parks certainly have their own character and this one was no different. While the mountain peaks are always appealing for me further west was an area that had been burnt out in the St. Mary's Falls area. The contrast of the burn trees with the underbrush growth of the different colors I thought was really pretty a a highlight of the park. There was little snow on the peaks, but the weekend that we left they got it. We caught Lake McDonald early for the sunrise, not exactly the picture I wanted but very nice. It's behind the Glacier Lodge. Logan's Pass each day was the most busiest and waiting lines. We traveled in September and were rather surprised as to the amount of visitors, but do go in the off season if you can. Well, I guess too that depends on what you might want to see in reference to wildlife. Yellowstone for us was a much better option on wildlife. Call the park. If you are not familiar with Huckleberries check the Glacier National Park map and you will see just to the left of the word Glacier is a place called Polebridge. You have to go for the huckleberry bear claws. It's a gravel/dirt road but so worth the trip. They are so so good. I think I got one of my best photos there on this trip just of the country. There is also a place in Hungary Horse Route 2 called the Huckleberry Patch. I also want to mention other points of interest you may not know about. In Crazy Horse there is a Wildlife museum almost directly across from the Huckleberry Patch. On route 2 heading south just as you come into Hungary Horse there is a gallery on your right, I don't recall the name, but another great stop.. Whitefish is not to far of a drive from there, maybe 25-30 minutes. You have to see the Sunti World Art Gallery, we have been to many and I believe this is the best that we have ever seen. As senior we were rather limited in getting off the road but we did do St. Mary's Falls. Before we left I did some research on the falls and I understood the distance to be .07 of a mile. When we got there it was 1.7, so make sure you check all this out before you go or Post at one of the visitor centers when you get there for that information. I was worried about my wife with her issues and of course she had to mention , what will we do if my knees lock up? Gee! that's all I needed to hear. I said, don't think about it. It was through this area I mentioned earlier about the burnt out area. It was so pretty. Most important, make sure you take plenty of water. I know that some of us seniors are pretty stubborn when taking advise, but it could be critical to your enjoying it or not. My wife took her cane and we were actually able to make it, but short on water. We highly recommend the park and it's surrounding. God's creation is so unbelievable.

Engineering Marvel!

By phat_dawg_21 |

The road was begun in 1921 and completed in 1932. It was an engineering marvel at the time and still is today. It is definitely one of the most interesting roads we have driven.

We drove from West Glacier to Rising Sun twice; and drove back and forth on the western part several times during our four days in the park. In September it was closed at Rising Sun because of Covid.

There are too many turnouts and vistas to count, and many have informative signage to help you understand what you are seeing.

This does not disappoint, its amazing

By Lorna |

I would say, start early, it's a very popular trip. So amazing, beautiful breathtaking scenery. Parts of the road are not for the faint hearted, narrow, steep drops and Rocky outcrops on the safe side. The walk to the Lake overhang at Logan was beautiful, it was very busy and the car Park although quite large gets really full quickly, hence the early start.

Beautiful Views

By lahanson |

This road has an amazing view, but it's a lot of driving to see it all. And if you want to stop and see things you have to keep your eyes peeled for parking spots. And then of course starting in 2021 you will need ticket to drive the road. Some tickets are released 60 days in advance and then some are released 2 days in advance. Those tickets are hard to get. They are released at 8 AM mountain time each day and they are gone by 8:01 AM. And really if you aren't staying in the park or have some other reservation in the park that is the only way to get in.

AMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING!!!

By Jeremy Z |

We visited Glacier in early July and drove Going-to-the-Sun Road three times during our four days there. I love that road and never get tired of driving it and all of the breath-taking views it offers those who travel on it.

GTTSR a must see

By waterfall2010 |

The best way to see the beautiful mountains on the GTTSR is to take a Red Bus tour.. reserve in advance is a must. Several tours to choose from. Tour guides explain all there is to see.
If in Glacier national Park, GTTSR is the thing to do. The West side drive to Logan Pass is more " exciting'" with the curves and width of the road...and more crowded. The East side drive is less challenging to Logan Pass.

Beautiful but strenuous bike ride

By Michael K |

Spectacular drive or bike. This road was closed to car traffic at Avalanche Creek until Monday, July 13, when it opened all the way to Rising Sun. Unfortunately for us, we flew home on the 12th.

However, we did bike a few miles past the Loop and the views along the way were amazing. We would have biked further but they had closed the road starting at Apgar so we had to ride an extra 15 miles just to get to Avalanche. Given that we are not regular cyclists we ran out of gas shortly after reaching the Loop.

I would imagine now that the road is open that traffic is pretty heavy on the road, but it was an amazing ride that I highly recommend to those who are in good enough shape to do it by bike. for those who are not, if you can rent an e-bike it makes it a lot easier. Just plan ahead because those bikes go fast.

Early bird is a must

By Getaway62264 |

This is the most beautiful drive through Glacier Without a doubt. You will not be able to park anywhere unless you leave before 7am. We are on our last 2 days of our weeklong trip and the visitors greatly outnumber the capacity of the park. We left for Avalanche lake trail today at 5am just to get parking. We tried for days after 7am and couldn't find parking almost anywhere in the park. Fantastic national park but extremely frustrating. Many Glaciers area closed to visitors around 630am everyday due to crowds and no parking.

Going-to-the-Sun-Road

By Edward C |

It is amazing to see what the contractors accomplished 80-100 years ago.. One tunnel took two years to complete as machinery could not reach the site. The road is narrow, so drive slow, stay in your lane, and enjoy the trip.

Beautiful road trip in the fall with lots to see and hike if so inclined.

By Scotty779 |

Beautiful scenery, great road, and lots of opportunity to stop and enjoy the scenery. This was a perfect time to enjoy the fall colors as few of the leaves had dropped but the colors were all there. The road is narrow and twisty but paying attention to the speed limits and other road signs made it very enjoyable. Lots of places to stop and go for a short or long hike.

nice

By 261foodie |

beautiful views but can be slow going. Lots of traffic and road construction last fall when we took it. An easy drive , beautiful views but be prepared for slow traffic.

Another planet!

By Amanda J |

Not that this needed a review but man it was like another planet! Be warned though the beginning of the trek involves about 10 miles of unpaved roads due to construction and expect delays! But it is so worth it! You need a reservation for the road though and we saw multiple people turned away without one so don’t let that happen! The site to reserve is easy to use and even though we didn’t get one ahead of time, we were able to get up at 8am to get one for three days! Be warned- not for the faint of heart so have your most confident driver do it!

Most do

By Laura B |

Amazing drive with spectacular views so worth the drive. Even though there was lots of traffic it was still totally enjoyable

Breathtakingly Beautiful

By RJ748 |

During our visit, the road was open between West Glacier and Rising Sun, so instead of driving all the way through the park, we had to turn around at Rising Sun and go back the way we came.

That wasn't a problem. We saw everything we'd wanted to see, and spotted things on the return trip that we hadn't gotten a good look at on our way into the park.

We visited on a Monday. There was about a twenty minute wait in line at the west entrance. I imagine that it might be more crowded on a weekend.

The road is an engineering marvel, with breathtaking scenery -- a slate blue river, waterfalls, two large lakes and majestic mountains -- along the way. We also saw mountain goats close to the roadway at Oberlin Bend (just west of the Logan Pass Visitor Center).

The round trip took about 4.5 hours, including stops for photos and restroom breaks.

A must-see experience.

Amazing Experience (and a few tips!)

By Meg R |

This was an amazing drive and well worth it! I'm adding a few tips/things we learned that I wish I knew in advance:
- We visited in July 2023 and made our reservations for the road the day the reservation system opened in March
- There was some construction that led to road closures with a pilot car system that added waits of 30-60 minutes. We could not find detailed info about this online so we asked at the ranger station (Apgar) where they gave us a lot more detail and we planned our trip around this - doing certain activities certain days to avoid the delays.
- I am a wimp when it comes to narrow roads with edges. I didn't personally drive all of the scary parts but I'll note that the entire Going-to-the-Sun-Road had nice solid barriers on the side of the road when there was a steep drop off. I didn't see any road edges lacking barriers.
- Logan Pass parking: We had been warned not to bother trying to park there after 7:30am. This was not our experience - it can be done! For two days in a row, we were able to find parking around 1/2pm with minimal or no waiting. The busiest we saw it (cars backed up waiting to park) was around 9/10am one day. It was always very crowded but don't be dissuaded if you can't arrive at 7am. Try in early afternoon after some of the morning hikes have left.
- Many Glacier area: Note that a large section of road to the Many Glacier area is gravel. It's well maintained though (and we saw a bear on the road!).
- Driving back on the Going-to-the-Sun-Road versus around the southern end of the park on Highway 2: One of our days, we drove back from St. Mary to West Glacier via Highway 2 outside of the park. Google maps told us to take Highway 49 rather than going out to Browning. Do NOT take highway 49. It's a terrifying narrow road with switchbacks, steep drop offs, high speeds, and no barriers. If you are going to drive south around the park, it may be better to drive out to Browning on Highway 89 back to Highway 2. Highway 2 is still fairly winding 2 lane road with much higher speed limits than in the park (70 mph) and we saw a very tragic accident while driving this route. The overall time to drive back to West Glacier via Hwy 2 versus Going-to-the-Sun Road (westbound) was only a little less, and Going-to-the-Sun road felt a lot safer and more spectacular.

During all of 2020, our Covid Restricted year, Going to the Sun Road was ONLY open Apgar > Rising Sun.

By MaryEllenM27 |

From a 5 star to a 4 star in 2020... but ONLY because of the extreme congestion and occasional complete closures on the road. In 2020, the infamous Covid-edict restricted year, Going to the Sun Road was the ONLY road open in Glacier. And then, only to Rising Sun and Back. Essentially, it became a dead end. But one of the most gorgeous dead-ends in the world.

It was also extremely busy as back to back conga lines of cars and completely occupied parking areas closed the GTTSR from time to time until the blockages eased up enough to allow movement.

In spite of that we still made two photo-centric drives on the road during 2 different months. Because, well...there was not much else to do considering the effect closures had had on local businesses of all kinds. Everyone flocked to Glacier to try for fresh-air, hiking, kayaking...and to get away from their home-state Closures and Quarantine edicts.

As long as everyone was patient about the time it took to drive that 2 lane road it also gave everyone scenery and spectacular photo ops. Driving slower...even stopped entirely at times...gave a bonus of extra time for taking photos in areas where you would not have normally been allowed to stop at all.

We did witness a bit of anger and venting of frustrations...but all in all, that was to be expected. Why? Because many came up to the park from hundreds and thousands of miles away but, they were unaware of the closures on the east side and the dead end nature of the Going to the Sun Road in 2020. Many were dismayed at the lack of lodging choices and when local rental car companies ran out of cars to rent for a while.

Glacier and the Going to the Sun was still a stunning drive and Covid could NOT change the beauty of nature there. Double check the access situation if you plan for 2021...it may take time to return to the old normal in Glacier. It make take even more time to return to how you remember it on past visits.

When you do come back with total unlimited access to the Park it will become 5 star again in an instant! I promise you that.

One word...WOW!

By Rob M |

Came in on a Sunday from St Mary's, and no reserveration was needed. It was a little rainy for a few hours. Bit slowly cleared up. Pictures never justify the magnitude of these mountains. Every corner has a new, spectacular view. It's probably my favorite national park and would recommend several days, due to the size of the park, especially if you want to hike.

I’ve driven The road to the sun many times and never get tired of the beauty. I do get tired of the incredible lines of cars, pull offs always packed and inconsiderate, sometimes dangerous drivers.

Unbelievable sights!

By John D |

We traveled the road on a Sunday and the traffic wasn't too bad. Logan pass parking was FULL when we passed by at 10:30 am and again at 5:30 pm. Fortunately, we had taken the free shuttle the day before, or we would not have been able to see it.

Reminded me of Norway

By TravelCat |

Beautiful road, if you’re afraid of heights it’s nerve recking but the scenery is gorgeous, worth the long drive. So far in July 2020, the road is open all the way to Rising Sun (surprisingly).

Parking, Parking, Parking

By gr8ful4222 |

This is such a gorgeous drive, definitely worth doing at least once, in spite of the crowds. But the truth is that unless you go very early you won’t be able to get parking at most places, even with the permit system in effect; and the shuttle stops can have very long waits. We went a few days after Labor Day in September, so shuttles weren’t even running until after 9 am. Overall, the only two places that we were able to park easily were McDonald Lodge and Apgar Visitor Center, on the west side. Avalanche, Logan Pass Visitor Center, Sun Point, and St. Mary Visitor Center filled up quickly, along with the stops closest to Logan Pass (Lunch Creek Loop and Oberlin Bend). The parking lot for Logan Pass, in particular, is a zoo. But there were a lot of places to pullover and enjoy the scenery between Avalanche and Logan Pass, and between Logan Pass and St. Mary. We drove the entire road twice in five days, so some places that didn’t have parking the first time had parking on our second time through (St. Mary Visitor Center and Sun Point). I highly recommend driving this road at least once, but use the shuttle system if you are planning a hike, since there’s no guarantee you can park at any particular trailhead.

Dream come true!

By Weymouthfan |

My dream for years was to drive the Going to the Sun Road. We boarded an early Red Jammer vehicle for the tour through the park as part of our Canada USA tour. My only gripe is that the 3 hours was not long enough to properly enjoy the park. Although we were driving through early morning, the road was very busy, but oh my! the scenery is stunning, better than in my dreams. Would love to drive this road a million times. I would like to have spent longer, savouring the scenery and sweeping vistas. Logan Pass was extremely busy but I enjoyed every minute. Hope to return again one day.

What an unfortunate trip! We traveled across the country to Glacier for my daughter's graduation trip only to be denied entry. Despite having a park pass, the Going to the Sun Road tickets sold out within seconds each day. I spent most of the trip getting up before 8am trying to get them, to no avail. So, we drive an hour and a half up a gravel road to at least see Bowman Lake, only to be told the parking "just filled up" and were turned away. We spent a boatload of money to see nothing. I get why they are doing this, but there has to be a better way!

Fantastic 4-hour experience

By Deb M |

A breathtaking vista at every turn, this is a drive to be slowly savoured. We started at the western gate at 6 a.m. feeling we would beat the crowds. WRONG! We never felt rushed by a crowd behind us, but certainly were always in the company of many others. When we arrived at Logan Pass at 8:20, there was not a parking spot to be had. The circling cars waiting for spots was like being in a Walmart parking lot two days before Christmas.

Beautiful drive!

By ayr |

Hard to get tickets but it's truly breathtaking. If you are one of the lucky ones, enjoy! We were lucky because we had reservations at Apgar Village cabins so we had access for 3 days. Definitely worth it to stay inside the park.

Great tour

By Gail and Jack |

Such a great trip. Beautiful scenery. The narration and conversation by our driver, Kirk, was very interesting. He was the best!

Both Ride and Drive

By OLIVER L |

I can see why this road is so popular. It has amazing views of the park. We took the Red Bus Tour one day and drove it ourselves another. Both ways were great. The only downside is the crowded parking areas. Even with the restricted access pass system we had to bypass a few areas because no parking was available.

Majestic

By Nancy B |

It’s busy for a reason. Jaw-dropping beauty at every turn. Drive it slowly and take it all in, but very aware of others because everyone is looking at the breathtaking scenery. Covid had part of the road closed, so you had to turn around at Rising Sun, but this gave you another chance to see what you might have missed on the way up. If you decide to park along the road, make extra sure you leave no part of your vehicle hanging over the white parking lines. We saw so many people getting parking tickets because of this.

Amazing experience

By Sara T |

What an amazing experience! I recommend you drive a small car, there are some narrow areas and cliff over the side. We went in July, there was construction which added a lot of time! Take advantage of the pull offs.

A long tiring drive.....

By Dabo71 |

The Road To The Sun is a very scenic drive on a two lane roadway with few pulloffs. Unfortunately, the person driving can see very little of the breath taking scenery as it is 100% eyes on the road due to the very heavy traffic. I drove this road alone during one of the peak months for visitors, and it took me almost 2 hours to drive from the west entrance to Glacier to Logan's Pass. This was due to heavy traffic, the abundance of large slow moving motor homes, large pull behind trailers, and the tour buses that would often stop in the roadway to let the passengers take photos or to just enjoy the views. The NPS instituted in 2021 an additional pass that is required to be purchased before one is permitted to travel the RTS. The pass supposedly was to help limit the number of vehicles on the roadway, but from the people that I spoke with at Logan's Pass that have driven the road before, not much has changed congestion wise. I am glad that I made the drive; however, I would recommend that if one wants to travel this road during peak vacation months, be at the entrance gate when the park opens. Otherwise, try and go during off peak vacation times like May and September. This was a one and done trip for me.

Ticket system is messed up

By MANDR_15 |

Ticket system is terrible. I tried starting as soon as the tickets were available, only to watch as the number of tickets available twindled within 3 minutes as I repeatedly got the message "Too many people are requesting tickets right now. Refresh your screen and try again." If the system can't handle the traffic to let people actually get tickets when they try, then something is very wrong.

My vacation voided

By Thomas H |

One more "I-am-disgusted" review: Planned this trip for a long time -- our one week vacation: Now locked out of park. There is no way to get access tickets (I bet that those who get them have an inside track to the government somehow!). For days, have been hooking up 4+ computers with very-fast-access-speeds to hit the recreation.gov joke at 8AM MT -- No way. By the way, 2021 is entirely sold out as of this writing, except for one day in August.

I have travelled here many times over the years: Yes, it DOES get very crowded -- but so what; I can and will deal with that. Now, we are locked out of the park that is MY PARK (I pay for all this). Oh, and if you are old, not computer savvy, maybe poor, .... -> Your government doesn't care one bit about you!

Awesome, Spectacular Mountain Scenery

By gypsyuno |

It is hard to put the beauty and grandeur of Glacier National Park into words. The mountains are spectacular and awe-inspiring, rivaling Yosemite and the Grand Canyon for magnificent scenery on a grand scale. The centerpiece of the park, in many ways, and certainly the easiest way to see glorious scenery, is Going to the Sun Road. The park itself is huge, and much of it is not accessible by car, but this road cuts across the middle of the park and gives easy access to some of the best and most spectacular scenery. We started the drive at the west entrance and spent some time at the Apgar Visitor Center, where you can get general information about the park and about road conditions. While we were there a ranger was giving a talk on bear safety for hikers (you can buy bear repellant here, and at many other shops in the area). Not counting a stop for lunch, it took us about 3 hours to drive GTTS road all the way to St Mary on the eastern edge of the park. The road itself is in good shape, but narrow with many tight turns and little clearance – many places with a shear rock wall on one side and a drop off on the other. Slow going due to the winding nature of the road, lots of traffic, and of course taking advantage of pull offs to stop and take photos or just admire the view. We did not stop at the visitor center at Logan Pass because there was no place to park – the lot was full to overflowing and I understand it can fill up by 7AM. We had intended to drive on to the Many Glacier area, but the drive took too long and we turned around from St Mary to head back to Whitefish. The weather, which was good in the morning, turn grey and rainy in the afternoon. If you plan a trip to Glacier, be aware that there are very limited lodging choices on the eastern side of the park, but many good options in Whitefish and Kalispell. Also know that GTTS road is only open in the summer, and opening and closing dates depend on the weather. The park website includes a table with the historical opening and closing dates. We visited in early September, and the road closed for the winter just a couple of weeks later.

Must-do Drive

By micndav |

This amazing road has more inspiring views than you can imagine. There are lots of places to pull off and admire the beauty. Be alert for bikers in the morning and evening hours because there isn't really anywhere to pull aside if another car is coming the opposite way. Drive it early in the morning and at sunset for spectacular views. Also, you can see the Milky Way Galaxy if you are there at night.

Beautiful high road

By Crystal tea |

This was a breathtaking drive. It was 2 lanes. There was so much beauty. We saw glaciers even in September. Warning: If you are a nervous driver this trip is probably not for you. It goes to a pretty high elevation and you are very close to the rock barrier. At the halfway point we were 6,000 feet up. I was a passenger and was nervous at parts, but it was so fun I'd do it again. Note: It would be best to pack a coat. It was snow cold when we hiked towards the halfway point.

Be careful!

By Paul E |

The few times I took my eyes off the road for a quick second, the views were spectacular. I was driving a rental car and wasn’t totally familiar with it yet. As we got closer to Logan Pass, I realized I had a death grip on the wheel and I had a clenched jaw. I took a deep breath and talked myself down but still, for me, the drive was difficult and dangerous. The road is narrow with many 180 degrees switchbacks & a mistake could land you thousands of feet down to the bottom of a cliff. I’m glad we did it, but I’ll never drive it again. I’ll ride one of the park’s smaller antique looking buses.

a beautiful drive

By peter l |

The road is very narrow and the very large number of visitors complicated the drive. Views, especially on the St.Mary's Lake side of the pass were the best.

Awesome!

By Kovit S |

The views were really quite amazing! More than we asked for or expecting.
The drive is not easy, I was lucky my friend was very good on these sometimes
treacherous roads. Not to be missed for sure. We happened to there during
a heatwave so your experience should be better in more normal summer
Weather. Only open in summer.

A "Must" if going to Glacier NP

By kathryn wanders |

What a beautiful road to see a large portion of the National Park! You pass through beautiful meadows, and up to Logan Pass, which is the highest point along the road.

Driving through in the early morning and around dusk will yield the best times to spot wildlife. It will take about 1.5 hours to drive from one end to the other - the speed limit is 45mph, windy roads, and there are some incredible views along the way!

5am

By Dee22321205 |

I highly recommend going at 5am before everyone starts coming I was able to see a bunch of deer and 3 baby cubs and 1 mama bear highly recommend getting a park pass

Beautiful route!!

By Carrie N |

This is the best route through Glacier. If driving yourself be prepared for some tight corners and taking it slow! The road is nice and paved, but there are many times when the rock is right up to, if not even on, the road. There are SO many beautiful sites to see along the way though. It seemed like there were waterfalls everywhere I looked. There are tons of stops along the way. We were usually able to find parking to stop. If there are a lot of vehicles stopped or pulled over, there is a good change there could be a wild life siting or beautiful view nearby!

Thrilling ride

By SgtMom2 |

Unfortunately the red bus tours were cancelled for the season due to COVID, but we drove ourselves and had a great time, right up to where they closed the road just after St. Mary's lake. Beautiful scenery, occasional mountain goat views. Just an amazing engineering accomplishment.

Going to the sun Road

By Mohit Mangal |

Going to the sun road is not to miss while visiting Glacier National Park.
There are many points during the journey where we can stop and enjoy the view.
The daily pass for going to the sun road opens at 7 pm local time and it is valid for 1 day so be cautious about it.

Beautiful

By Gran7 |

This is one of the most beautiful road trips in America. The flora and fauna are spectacular. The mountains tower over the drive. There are many waterfalls and lakes and hiking trails. Wildlife can be found. We were able to see two bears. Take your time and enjoy the sights and sounds on this spectacular drive

Stunning drive with plentiful scenic locations

By Nathan Z |

This was one of the most beautiful drives I ever experienced. The road can be congested during peak hours, but it is still worth it. It is definitely a more fulfilling experience for the passenger as the driver needs to remain focused on safely maneuvering the vehicle along the narrow, winding road. It is worth driving in both directions to see the different perspectives.

Restrictions in place so plan ahead

By GK1959 |

Five years ago we came here when the road wasn’t fully open due to snow cover. This year in the heatwave and insanity of the post COVID travel boom we learned a reservation ticket is require to travel into the park at both west glacier and st Mary’s entrances from 6am-5pm. Couldn’t get in at two other entrances but finally drove in as far as Lake McDonald Lodge which is a spectacular setting and wonderful to see. Just be prepared. This park has limited access as it is and these unexpected and overly regulated limitations would be reason to hesitate this year.

Stunning

By KitSpencer1 |

We are from the east coast and never visited Montana before and were overwhelmed by how beautiful the state was especially during this drive.

Impossible to see Going to the Sun!

By Anna S |

The way the park is being managed now is a complete JOKE! For our entire trip we have tried getting tickets each day at 8am for Going to the Sun Road and they are gone in seconds. I called and was told you don’t have to have tickets after 5, so we drove there and waited in line for an hour for Going to the Sun Road. Never were we told the road would be closed after Lake McDonald. Everyone had to turn around, such a complete joke. Pissed me off!

Beautiful!!!!

By Waunderlust |

Yes, you have to make sure it’s open before you go, BUT.....even if some of it is closed, it’s so awesome!! Logan’s Pass was closed but we drove all the way up to there and trekked our way down. Same with up to avalanche. Still worth it!!!!

A must do in Glacier

By Mike D |

Absolutely stunning drive. Wife and I drove this a few weeks ago. Beautiful views. The day was pleasant and clear. Saw three black bear. Would certainly recommend as a must do.

Bird Woman Falls is thin, but going down is amazing!

By Robby G C |

This waterfall was small at the origin, but when it went down it was amazing.

We stood there, admiring the view. Wow!

It goes down 442 feet high.

Nice view from here as well.

Worthwhile to see!

Beautiful but crowded

By Mark C |

The views are incredible, but it's too crowded. The reservation system doesn't seem to be making much difference other than making it a hassle.

Wow

By Jeanette B |

Very exciting and gorgeous drive on this famous road. It was disappointing not to get into the visitor center as it was already full. The scenery is just breath taking and amazing!!

Iconic Drive

By Linda P |

Going to the Sun Road is a must do in Glacier National Park! Be aware you do need reservations to drive this road, so make sure you secure those prior to coming to Glacier. We were unable to get our first date of choice but once you get the ticket it is good for 7 days.

This is a very long, narrow, harrowing, twisty turny road with many awe inspiring vistas that take your breath away! Unfortunately the poor driver needs to keep their eyes on the road so won't be able to fully appreciate the beauty. We were lucky enough that by doing the road 2 days, each driver was able to switch off so everyone did experience the majestic beauty of the drive. YES if you are afraid of heights, steep drop offs you will be scared, this is definitely not for the faint of heart.

My husband and I put this drive up there with the Road to Hana in Maui.

Beautiful road, impossible parking, managed by idiot

By tuyeda2018 |

First of all, this is not a reflection on Glacier National Park itself. It is a beautiful park. This also isn't really about the actual Going to the Sun Road. It is an engineering marvel and a breathtaking scenery.

It is about the misguided policies the park has implemented regarding reservations. They claim they are doing this to lessen the crowds. However, I drove midweek (Wednesday) and with a paid reservation. Compared to previous trips, I noticed no reduction in cars on the road or parking lots. In anything, it is worse. The Logan Pass lot was full and barricaded. Other, nearby lots were also full, probably by people wanting to go to Logan Pass and not what those lots are for.

They should not require reservations to use the road. They should require reservations on the parking lots. That will automatically reduce the drivers on the road but more importantly, it will better manage the packed, parking lots.

Note: If you are visiting Glacier National Park as the main destination of your trip, then you may not be affected (or at least less affected). This is mostly from the perspective of people who want to travel through the park via the Going to the Sun Road, but as part of a larger trip (probably going from US to Canada or vice versa). They would like to take the scenic route, stop at some pullouts to see the views, and maybe stop for a short hike or two. Then leave the park on the opposite side...

1. The Going to the Sun Road is a road. It is a way to get from one end of the park to the other. Up in Canada, there is highway that goes through Banff National Park. If you are using that highway to go through the park but not stopping anywhere, you don't pay a fee. Having been to Glacier before, I knew it requires a park pass, so that is ok...

2. There is no longer a daily use pass. The minimum is a week. I know this is all US National Parks, so it's not Glacier's fault. I actually don't mind the $35 fee, but I'd rather they just sell it as a day pass (and they can charge $50 or $70 for the week). It just seems annoying to buy a week pass to drive through the park. Across the border at Waterton Lakes National Park, they offer day passes.

3. Starting this year (I think) and like many other over-crowded parks, they are now requiring a reservation through recreation (dot) gov. Normally, I am a big fan of this. For example, the Lower Lewis Falls in SW Washington are beautiful and very popular in the summer, but the parking lots are tiny and fill up very early. With the reservation system, I paid $2 for a reservation and parked in the closest lot. I found out about the reservation requirement for the Going to the Sun Road just by chance when I was reading a blog about the best pullouts and coincidentally it was a very recent blog so it mentioned the reservation. It seems this was not communicated out very well, because the visitor center was full of people complaining because they didn't have reservations and didn't know they were required.

4. I had read that reservations become available 180 prior. I went to the get reservations a few days before and it said reservations were not yet released. I needed to log in at 8am the day before. I don't know if the policy change or there are two batches. In any case, I got reservations, but it is inconvenient not to know until the day before.

5. The checkpoint for the Going to the Sun Road reservation is like 5 minutes inside the park. By this time, you have already paid the $35 park fee. If you need to go through the park and out the other side, there is an alternative route to the south, and this one is free. I doubt they will refund your fee though, so that would work better as an alternate if you knew ahead of time (and of course, you don't get any of the views or hikes from the Going to the Sun Road.

6. There is a workaround for people who just want to visit the park. You can park in the visitor center and then take the free shuttle around. You will sacrifice some time (waiting for shuttles) and flexibility (it doesn't stop everywhere), but it's a good alternative and eliminates the parking hassle. However... it does not work for something trying to travel through the park. You can get to the other side, but your car cannot.

7. The other alternative is to go at night, but it's dark (no view) and there is construction.

8. I did have a paid reservation. And I drove on midweek (on a Wed). It made no difference. The parking lots were more full than the last time I was here (before reservations) so this idea is not working. They really need to require the reservations for the specific parking lots. And if people want multiple lots during the day, then they need to get multiple reservations.

One of the most incredible drives I have done

By Jesse S |

This really is a must do. We visited at the end of June and the road fully opened on our last day there. We are so glad we got to drive it. The views are incredible. Pictures don't do it justice. There are various places that allow you to pull over and stop to get out and take photos. There is also a visitor's center at Logan pass.

Beautiful..... But

By RCUrb |

So we tried for a week to get a ticket, with no luck we bought a late boat trip with our party of 7 that we did not go on just so we would have access to the road, you can also arrive super early I believe before 6. Prepare for a full day of driving especially if you go to Many Glacier on the same day. Is there beauty, absolutely, although unfortunately for us and ten of thousands of others the smoke pretty ruined and views in the distance. Parking is a times extremely challenging at highlighted stops and the construction made getting in and out of many glacier an extra 1.5 hrs of sitting in the car. If you like to spend time getting blood clots in your legs from sitting all day this in for you.

Get your ticket

By Columbus_Mom |

Gorgeous ride, not as scary to drive as I expected. I thought the road was going to be far more narrow and curvy. There was plenty of room for all of the cars. Lots of great look outs too.

Glacier Park is a Bust

By pfefmeister |

I understand they need to limit access to this road, as it’s the only road in the park. I only wanted to take the road up to the North Fork of the Flathead River to fish - had nothing to do with Road to the Sun (which we’ve done a couple of times already) - still, no impossible to get ticket, no access, regardless. Rangers swarm over the car and route you out of the park. Your only alternative are the few access points off of Highway 2 - which also presents delays due to repairs of a 26 mile stretch. If you don’t have a golden $2 ticket, you’re stuck in West Glacier Village with a thousand other tourists buying overpriced souvenirs. Honestly, don’t bother.

On the edge

By Donna W |

narrow, windy road with a million dollar view. Quite an experience if you are the driver!! I kept hoping for no on-coming traffic. Suggest taking the tour bus if you really want to enjoy the trip.

Highlight of our trip to Glacier National Park- a road of great beauty.

By Kathy Z |

Beyond stunning-what an amazing road, worth all the trouble to make reservations and practically travel to Canada! Our favorite stop was the Trail of the Cedars, an otherworldly hike through a mystical rain forest with a gorge of rushing water. It is at the end of the line as a gate closed off the rest of the road...but check in advance as it may open later in June. Plenty of parking just wind around the picnic areas as it is crowded, however, several times we were alone with the mystical forest. Haiku like sayings dot the trail and add to the mystery and beauty of the hike. An easy hike with a boardwalk that is beautifully maintained to protect the roots of the ancient cedars.

Glacier NP new rules

By Scuba instructor |

Glacier National Park is one of the most beatiful parks in the USA, but they now have a strange process to limit entry. Now they require a 2 dollar ticket that you can only get online two days in advance and they sell out in a matter of minutes. There is no way to plan a trip if you are from out of state. The workers at the park were interviewed on the news saying other roads in the park were open if you don't have the ticket, but this is simply not true. We went around different areas and we were turned away. We were told to come back after 5 pm or before 6 am. There was such a line at 5 pm, that I don't see how this can be good for the park. So much for our annual pass!

Beautiful drive up the mountain

By palpande |

Gorgeous drive with amazing views. Parking is tough so keep driving along the drive and you dont have to get out of the car to experience the views.

Get a ticket. A must to see

By Nancy L |

WOW!! A must . Make sure you get a ticket!!!
The scenery was breathtaking.
Road was well maintained. Driver must watch the road as there are some close to the edge areas.
Lots of pull off spots to get out and take pictures.
Waterfalls were really running . One area you got a fr we car wash!!

One of the best I have had the opportunity to visit.

By Susan O |

This place is magnificent!!! I live in California and have always felt that Yosemite
was breathtaking, however, upon my visit to Glacier, it made Yosemite look like a mini
park. The lodges were beautiful and carefully restored. The Park is so vast that I feel it takes more than one visit to see all it has to offer.

Charles Russell are here!

By E3921TBjerryg |

You want to have Glacier National Park on your bucket list. The food at Russell’s Restaurant both is exotic and great.

After dinner enjoy an after dinner drink while gazing at the enormous lobby fireplace with Russell’s engravings surrounding entire fireplace.

Yes

By riceburnergrace |

Do this! It’s terrifying and tight. Don’t do this with large vehicles unless you want to white knuckle it! We saw someone get too close to the wall and they busted off their side mirror. Beautiful but be careful!

Spectacular experience!

By Mainemeow |

This is a once in a lifetime experience. The views are jaw dropping! Some driving skills are required. The road is very narrow. They have tour vehicles and it is a good idea to go on them if you are uncomfortable with driving up high elevations on a narrow road. Note of caution. This trip requires a time slot reservation. You should go on the National Park reservation system exactly at 7 PM or you risk not getting a quality time slot, especially on week-ends.

Nature at its Best

By kurt l |

Two of us rode motorcycles up the Going to the Sun Highway, Glacier Park, MT. The views are almost indescribably awesome. Glacial action has left America with one of the most spectacular parks in North America. An amazing tunnel to drive through, waterfalls along the roadway, plenty of parking views, cliffs of staggering magnitude, and simply magnificent greenery. and a very nice visitor center at the top of the pass (Logan Pass, just under 7000 ft.). This is a must see.

Spectacular Views

By CBG0 |

Breath taking, awesome, spectacular views from the seat of your car!!!!!

The road is narrow and curvy, if you have atleast 2 people- one to drive and one to photograph— that is ideal.

Check the website before you go! The restaurants were closed on our trip and we brought food/drinks with us.

Currently you MUST have a 2 dollar pass to drive on this road —purchased in advance —in ADDITION to your park pass—-or the National Park Ranger will not admit your vehicle. They do not sell the 2 dollar pass at the time you arrive. So plan ahead!

Going to the Sun Road September 2025

By Lisa I |

Breathtaking. From the west side starting at the beautiful McDonald Lake lodge, Heavens Peak, Logans Pass, to the other end, on the eastside at St Marys lake, every turn and pullout provided stunning views! A wonderful experience.

Bucket List Drive

By Postcards From Carrie |

This is a bucket list drive! Rivals Road To Hana in Maui but the scenery on this road is superior. Pictures and descriptions do not do justice to the awe inspiring, majestic scenery along this drive. It gets better as you climb higher on the road, even when you think it can’t get any better, it does. It really makes you feel small and it is a bit intimidating as well. Just know that there is no cell service anywhere in Glacier National
Park. Saw a few families with 2 way radios which I thought was really smart!

Beautiful, but no wildlife sightings

By Sharon B |

We really enjoyed our GTS adventure. Our only regret was not seeing any widlife, but the mountains and scenery were fabulous! On our return from Many Glaciers, we were right in the middle of a hail storm, which, while exciting, wasn't exactly fun and was extremely noisy on the roof of our van! We're all sorry that tomorrow is our last day here in MT.

A Bucket list Item checked!

By Wandering Cajun |

Loved everything about this experience, but we planned in advance and had entry tickets. It’s a full day to drive from one end to the other, make stops along the way, and return to the other side. We drove it twice during our 10 day visit, once in the morning in one direction, and then again at dusk in the opposite direction. It was a totally different experience each time. We saw more wildlife at dusk, and got to watch the sunset at Bird Woman Falls, and then right before Heavens Peak. It was magnificent! Everyone should see this if given the chance. If you can drive it, do the red bus tour.

Complete Abomination of Liberty

By Donna S |

This is an utter DISGRASE to our country. Along the lines of the discrimination in Minnesota comes the actions of the NPS. They set aside 145 tickets each day in a lottery that thousands compete for. We are TAXPAYING US CITIZENS, and you are taking away our liberty, respect, and freedom. We PAY for this park, and they are DISCRIMATING. Do you have poor internet? You are discriminated against. Do I believe there are truly 145 tickets each morning? No, I have logged on every day when the clock strikes 8am, to get the same message that the server is too busy and to try again. It is all a SCAM, a huge SCAM. This deserves a CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. You cannot freely take away my ability to see a national park that I pay for. This is ILLEGAL and I highly suggest legal action take place. I can guarantee that many 'untold secrets' will come out of this. Again, the park is absolutely beautiful but the ignorance of the park service is beyond this. Please message your representatives, and we need to pursue legal action.

Bucket list item.

By LegalEyeDallasTexas |

Gorgeous, not too crowded. Wow scenery. So many hike options. Plan to see baby mountain goats at the hike at Logan’s pass. Maybe see bears at dusk. But guaranteed to see jaw dropping vistas and turquoise water.

Drive is gorgeous

By JK |

I drove this road at many different times around 7 times within a week. It's nice that other drivers were not in a hurry - everyone going about 30mph or less... Lots of hair pin turns. They scenery is beyond gorgeous. We saw this road in complete darkness, rain/thunder/lightening, sun, foggy -- everything within a week. It was always exciting to see the vista! There's not a lot of parking areas, so if you want to get out and really look, I'd suggest getting up road very early to really enjoy the views. If you go prior to 7am -- or if you enter after 3pm - you don't need a pass to enter the road. You must have a day pass between 7am and 3pm.

Amalfi Coast- Montana Style

By tammyg196 |

Truly spectacular and IT REOPENED TODAY!Just in time for my first day in the park. Unforgettable drive and a must-see on your Glacier visit. Two work-arounds if you’re unable to secure a vehicle pass 1) see offer in pic and 2) if you rent kayaks, bikes etc from on on-premise vendor, that serves as your pass for the day.

Frustrated

By bwviney |

We were unable to go on Going to Sun road as it was still closed due to late snows. The park is accessible only by reservations which we did not understand. Needed to reserve 3 months in advance. Same day reservations impossible. Reservations system may work for some, but as older travelers we do not know how to make it work when home is over 1000 miles away and we do not know how long we will travel each day.

Extremely fun summer road trip

By Andrea G |

We really loved spending the day at Glacier National Park. It's a beautiful place, with many places to stop and explore. They limit the number of vehicles that can get into the park each day, but if you're lucky enough to get a pass, it's not too crowded and you can find plenty of things to do.

Highly recommend for a fun family road trip!

Ban bicyclists on Going to Sun Road

By Patrick K |

The park is amazing! But, Almost died in head on collision with another car swerving to avoid bicyclists. They need to ban all bike traffic on this road. It is not designed for bikes. There are many other options for bike riders.

Definitley experience it

By TheTravelers88 |

A must, take your time and drive it both ways at different times of the day. Logan Pass visitor center fills up fast. Words and pics don't do it any justice.

Unbelievable!

By m00nbeam48 |

If you are afraid of heights, make sure you take your meds BEFORE you hit this road! Wow! Such incredible beauty, but it is a white knuckle kind of road. Even my adult son was sweating bullets! Just take it really slow and stop at every. single. turnout. Such breathtaking views. The day we drove it, a mountain goat perched right on the side of the road (yes, it was about 2,000 feet straight down) and I got amazing shots of him standing on snow in July.

A Must Visit

By BrianCB62 |

A true piece of Americana. Beautiful scenery with plenty of pull offs to take it all in. Definitely stop at the Wild Goose Island pull off to see the view. Make sure you have plenty of fuel as it takes two hours to drive from East to West. There is no cell service while in Glacier National Park so plan ahead.

Stunning views and geology

I didn’t know what to expect. This road is carved into some of the best landscape in America. It was obviously built before modern cars were built: the road is narrow and runs along steep mountainsides . It was crowded with other vehicles and sometimes the turnouts would be full but interesting the whole way.
.

It's a park MUST DO - but plan for it.

By LSUTraveller |

New in 2025 is a Timed Entry Pass for entrance from West Glacier. It costs 2$ and available on recreation.gov. If you come in before 0700 - no pass needed. If you come in from the East/St. Mary entrance - no pass needed. The trip is incredible.

Amazing Views

By Beverly W |

We recently went to Glacier National Park. We stayed in East Glacier before entering the park. I recommend The Circle R Lodge. The staff there was very helpful. Gave us a map of the area. Before going to Glacier via Going to the Sun road, you have to have a pass. They are only $2.00 for 3 days. You have to get them 120 days prior to your visit. We went to Two Medicine Lake and Babb, which is two other locations of the park. You don't need a pass for them. So very beautiful! It was very congested on the road to the sun. You have to go very early or later in the afternoon to get to park at some of the scenic outlooks.

Breathtaking Views, Must see!!!

By Cmera4Fun |

There are many awesome views and great pull out places. There are also many short walks starting at one of many small parking areas along the road. I used the book "The Photographer's Guide to Glacier National Park: Where to Find Perfect Shots and How to Take Them (The Photographer's Guide)" by Gordon Sullivan and would highly recommend it whether you are a photographer or not. The book tells you the best pull outs and short hikes from the road to see great views.

Spectacular views

By MomofAPN |

This is truly a must-do in Montana! What views, it is a truly spectacular drive. You do need to reserve a spot ahead of time. Even though parking can be an issue, there simply isn’t much space on that road.

Amazing views!

By ednamtz99 |

First time visiting GNP and it has been the best trip we have taken as a family. The views were amazing and Going to the Sun Road was beautiful. Please do your due diligence and read up on what needs to be purchased before heading out. Can't wait to visit again!

Better without that kind of rangers

By jeipibi |

Really nice road.
It's a pitty that the rangers working there are not friendly. Shouting to people and extremely disrepectful.
Canada rangers are much better.

Experience you will never forget.

By JG1 |

If you go to Glacier, this is a MUST do, if the road is open. I drove this road in August on a sunny day. it was quite the driving experience. I personally think Glacier is the best National Park I have ever experienced. I've done quite a few through the years.

some road work

By ELKW |

It was the second time we went there, but this time we drove from the St. Mary visitor center (last time we drove from the West), we went to the Wild Goose island lookout point, because last time we went there in the late afternoon, so the picture taken was not good, and this time we came there in the morning, so can take the picture of the snowy mountain view at the back. But there was road work after this Wild goose island point, cars needed to wait for one direction to go first, the workers would has sign to show you when you can drive thru' the road. But actually it always has road work, road work happened in both 2018 & 2019 years, not sure for other years. If driving through the whole going-to-the-sun road, with stops at some points to look at the view and do some hikes, it certainly took you a whole day to do so. Also it was not easy to find parking in some famous points.

Going To Sun Road vehicle pass advice

By KathleenBW |

To obtain a vehicle pass for Going to the Sun Road and for Many Glacier area, I suggest logging into recreation.gov at 7:01 pm. Do not login in earlier than 7pm because you will most likely need to "refresh" the registration page and encounter a delay. So, if you login in at recreation.gov at 7:01 and submit your request for a vehicle pass for the following day, your chances of successfully obtaining a pass are very high. I got a pass everyday I requested one (usually by 7:05 --7:09 pm the night before) and was told there were 550 -- 1,000 passes remaining. I was granted a pass 3 times and 4th day I did not need one because we got on Going To The Sun Road before 6:00 am.
Also, it is SO worth the 2 hour 45 minute trip from Whitefish to Many Glacier to hike the Grinnell Glacier trail (from Many Glacier parking lot). Grinnell Glacier trail is THE BEST hike in Glacier National Park! You DO need to obtain a vehicle pass to enter the Many Glacier area in addition to the GTTS Road vehicle pass, unless you enter GTTS Road before 6:00 am then you would only need the Many Glacier pass.

Absolutely beautiful

By Hugo929 |

Located in NW Montana, it is a great place to visit. In August, there was very little snow or ice. Did not see any glaciers. I don't know if it was because it was late summer or climate change. The road was well maintained and easy to drive. In some points it was hard to find a parking space. Wild flowers, water falls, majestic massive peaks, lush forests and multiple spots for photographs make this drive worth going. We actually went twice on consecutive days, just could not leave the area without a second look. This park has multiple options for visitors: hiking trails, kayaking, bike riding and many more. Families with children will find it particularly attractive.
Driving from Kalispell please use GPS and study your maps. There is no clear road signage for "Glacier National Park", so follow signs on route 2 to West Glacier and enter the park on West Glacier Village.

Awesome, make sure you have the permit

By OG_LANKS |

It’s incredible, one of my favourite national parks, and the stop at St Mary’s Lake is possibly one of my favourite views on the planet. The pass to get onto the road was a right pain in the a**, however. A mix of poor preparation, no service and long queues, meant it took us about 1.5 hours to get from fish creek camp past the rangers checkpoint thanks to the new permit system they’ve got going. I can understand why they’ve done it (possibly) but please make sure you do your research and make sure you have the relevant pass/permit.

A Top 5 Auto Drive in the US.

By Kurt H |

This is a composite review of ~10 trips over 50 years. IMO, this is one of the top 5 auto drives in the US. Unfortunately, the rest of the planet is discovering it, so plan ahead. Vehicle reservations are required. Plan hotels in advance and food too (e.g., plan a car-side picnic). This drive gloriously demands ignoring the time of the day, particularly as flow is both as per the traffic, road curves/grade, and how many times you wish to get out, enjoy and take pictures! Plan a day and pay no attention to anything but God's beauty and great fun!

Parks Department very disorganized

By E Field |

The Glacier Park Rangers have no idea, and the phone/internet of the Parks department is even worst.
We tried for days to get an entry ticket, the so called 145 tickets offered at 8am each day were sold out at 8:01am every morning.
We were told by a park ranger @ Two Medicine entrance, who was very friendly that we could drive to the St. Mary’s entrance which is about 35 miles away on some pretty rough road. Got to St. Mary’s entrance and was turned away because we did not have an entry ticket. That was a 70-mile trip wasted because the ranger gave us the wrong information.
We did find out that we could go in, if we got to the Sun Road before 6am or after 5pm, so we did it. Although you can only go up to the Avalanche Road the views were outstanding.
The Federal parks department needs to get everyone on the same page. We traveled from East Tennessee to see the Glacier National Park, and don’t appreciate the unorganized methods of the Parks department.

wow factor

By Tourist745519 |

every mile of this 50 mile long road opens to awe inspiring sights and scenes.
Winding road brings in your face mountains, some clear, some shrouded in wimsy clouds.
Hilite trail, a wanna do it again trail, coz the views are gorgeous up there with the mountain goats.

Simply Stunning

By Ashley C |

A must do! Jaw dropping views; simply unforgettable. Be warned that there are some tight turns, so if you're in a large truck or van, keep your eyes on the road and not the scenery! Luckily, there are many areas to stop for photos along the way!

Beautiful views

By Susan H |

Beautiful scenery. Very busy highway so stopping for photos can get tricky. There is a shuttle which we didn't know about that might be worth looking into. Worth the trip for sure

Oh my GOD, THIS is the Sun Road.

By Steve C |

This the greatest scenic drive I have ever experienced.,
Of course, its WAY WAY more than just a scenic drive, but I travel with my mother who doesn't hike much anymore. and I cant leave her and go hiking for any length, so for me, the Sun road was a absolutely magical scenic drive experience like no other.
We were blessed with perfect weather in that we had off and on rain and clouds blowing through making for UNREAL pictures!
Just absolutely beautiful!
One of my favorite places Ive ever been.

Beautiful Scenery!

By lithlith |

The Going to the Sun Road is a must with Glacier National Park. This is the main road through the park and really your only way to access much of anything in the park. You'll have fabulous views along the way! Drive it one way, then turn around and enjoy the views driving it the other way. There are many turnouts for photos along the way and a few areas with larger parking areas at major trailheads. Don't bother going to Glacier if the bulk of this road is closed...wait until the end of June/beginning of July to enjoy access to the full road!

Longlasting Memory and A Loaf of Bread

By jbuchana2022 |

My four children and I made this journey in 1976 and STILL recall both the beauty and terror of the trip we made on the Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park!! It is absolutely breathtaking...so much so that we had purchased a loaf of bread to eat later for lunch but, alas, without even knowing it, I consumed half of that loaf while keeping my mind on THE ROAD. Everyone who can get there should do so for just as longlasting a wonderful memory!

Jaw dropping end to end

By SolarJabe |

Stunning vistas and overlooks throughout the entire drive. Enough pull-offs had parking space that I was able to stop wherever I wanted. Earlier in the year I can see it being more crowded and busy but late September was magic.

No traffic in the evening

By Princess279 |

Breathtaking beauty of the park and this road needs no review. I read reviews that the traffic was unbearable since the road just reopened a week before our visit, but couldn't wait to see everything. Late afternoon/early evening turned out the best time to drive the road. No traffic on the road, plenty of parking spots at all the pull-outs and innumerable opportunities to avoid visitors coming from the covid hot spots throughout the country. Probably wouldn't go past the glacier on the road, the scenery after that point is greatly affected by the fire damage. I would make this road an initial park introduction and then come back for hiking and more exploring.

Must do!

By Puravida |

A must to see Glacier. We did not drive it but selected a bus tour instead. The road and pull offs were very crowded, so the bus was a great choice. Our fellow bus riders used words such as "magnifcent", "awesome"...to describe the views from this road.

Magnificant views traveling both directions...

By Mark Lawhead |

I've taken this road three times. The traffic was not as heavy as the Park advises, though parking lot at Visitor Center at Logan Pass usually full. I have traveled a lot in my relatively long life (120 countries) and can say unequivocally that the scenery enjoyed driving this road is the most majestic of anywhere else in the world.

Awesome

By J K |

The ambience was great. I loved the service from Collins and found value for my money too. Great place for taking photos too.

Permits are difficult

By Joan F |

You need a permit to visit the park and you can either get it months in advance or try to get it the day before at 7:00 AM PST, which is difficult. We did get passes, and the first day we went to the East entrance. It was very busy and on weekends the shuttle runs, but it doesn't run as often as they say and it may be full, so you may wait an hour to go. June 27, part of the Road to the Sun was closed, you couldn't pass the Logan's pass, so people couldn't drive the whole park. The second day, we drove 2 ½ hours from Whitefish to go to the West entrance. At 9:30 AM no one was there to check our pass and the trails that early weren't busy. My recommendation, IF Logan's pass is still closed and you don't have a pass, you may want to try going at 6:45 AM to the West Gate (St. Mary's) and you could get in. The waterfall hike was beautiful. Don't forget your Bear Spray.

You Have To Do This

By Jeffrey R |

Driving the GTTSR is not as bad as you think it will be. The downside is that if you are the driver you will not be able to enjoy the scenery given you are focused on driving the road safely. I drove it twice. We did a Red Bus Tour as well. The Red Bus Tour was the way to really enjoy this road. You can do it!!!!

Most Scenic Drive in the USA

By tedaustad |

This is one of the most scenic drives in the United States! You cannot skip a day on the route to and from either East or West entrance. Drive back and forth - the views from the vehicle change with the direction you are travelling.

****WARNING****

By Kathy S |

You CANNOT enter the park without a STUPID $2 pass for Going To The Sun Rd. EVEN If You have a park entrance pass $35. We had to rent fishing poles online from a company IN the park to bypass the needing of the SOLD OUT $2 road pass!!

Spectacular

By Kim O |

What can you say about Glacier-National-Park other than spectacular. The views are glorious, the visitor centers well stocked, the restrooms throughout the park are clean. We took a red bus tour which was fun and a boat cruise on Lake McDonald which was relaxing. The only downside was the restaurant at Lake McDonald. A 45 minute wait wasn’t possible so we ate sandwiches from the camp store. Not ideal but ok. Eddie’s Cafe at Apgar village was excellent. If you haven’t been to Glacier-National-Park, make an effort to go there. It’s well worth the trip.

Audio tour was awesome!

By Guitarman222 |

The tour was well worth it. I’m sure we would have missed things without it and learned some history and interesting facts as well.

Beauty amongst the glaciers

By Suzanne |

Driving this road is the most beautiful experience and a definite must do! It goes without saying, arrive early. We had our pass and got there shortly after sunrise to ensure getting spots at the pulloffs, etc. We entered at the St Mary entrance and were successful stopping at all the places we desired and got fantastic pictures. As the day progressed, you can feel the traffic becoming more and more congested. As far as Logan Pass area, it is absolutely true, don't even try to get in the parking lot after 8:30. We drove by and saw some bighorn sheep laying in the grass. I attempted to pull in the lot and it was chaos just trying to get back out, no less see the wildlife or go in the visitors center. It's a shame there can't be designating parking for those who are going to take up parking for long term hiking and some of us who just want to see the visitor center and overlook/snap a few pics. Instead, we only got to drive by the whole area. Even the goat study area was packed, so no go there either. Nonetheless, it did not take away from the beauty of the remainder of the experience of GTTSR. It is magnificent!

When will the sun road be open 2020?

By Aktivlyontheroad |

Hi, we are looking to see when the going to the sun road will open 2020? Any ideas? We want to drive it on opening day.

Rip off charge

By MagicGirl57 |

We drove this road before and enjoyed the experience. Today due to time we just wanted to drive the first part (as seen in the film The Shining) but we were expected to pay $35 this time even though we would not have been in there an hour. This is an exorbitant charge. Many people will not want a 7 day pass, even if driving the whole road. There must surely be a better method to control numbers visiting.eg prohibiting tour buses and large vehicles.

This was an amazing adventure, beautiful views

By Pamela N |

Going up, up, up !! If heights are not your thing, take something to relax you unless you are driving !!

Rainy, foggy but still beautiful

By MerrillVR |

We had rain and fog so this beautiful drive was at times scary. But definitely doable by yourselves if you don't mind driving a mountain road. Unfortunately with the weather conditions, we didn't get to see most of the stunning views. I'd still recommend taking the drive. Currently you need reservations and a $2 pass.

Thoughts about the park

By Cindy E |

It was a beautiful scenery!!! I loved it! But the parking was terrible; finding a parking spot was crazy! You just about have to illegally park every time

You and stay but you can't go on this tour

By The Infinity G |

Don't bother with Glacier unless you have a ticket. You can stay in the park at the historic lodge, but it's virtually impossible to get a ticket. They are rationed and the website is overwhelmed because of so few tickets for so many people. Hopefully this situation will get better after the post-Covid rush. For now save you money and go the bar.

Wonderful panoramic road

By Melabaffi |

What a wonderful road! Every corner, every stop was a wow! Who saw that coming. I had read that it was a wonderful place but I don't know why after the Yellowstone I didn't have high expectations. Can I say I was more excited? Yes, I was amazed by the beauty of the various views. I recommend this route to anyone who wants to embark on a trip off the tourist circuits. It's worth the parks card. Unfortunately I didn't see any animals

What views!

By Sara B |

The views are amazing! The road is very narrow and scary but must see! Tons of spots to stop and take pictures.

Beautiful Drive

By dsjhoward |

This is probably one of the most beautiful drives in the national park system. However, if you are uneasy about driving a narrow road at high altitudes, you may want to take one of the tours and let somebody else drive. White knuckles all the way, but well worth it.

Must Do

By LiketoeatCincinnati |

This road is a must do while in Glacier NP. It has breathtaking scenery and tight high turns. Must be careful of people walking in the road while parking for hiking. There are views of lakes, falls and mountains.

Breathtaking

By khw8814 |

Truly the drive of a lifetime. It becomes more incredible the farther you go. One of the most incredible experiences I've ever had.

Stunning as always!

By Mel52088 |

Always a beautiful experience. Get the GSPY app in advance and spend $8 to download an audio tour and learn about what you’re looking at and where some worthwhile pull-offs are located. Don’t rush through. Give yourself ample time to enjoy the landscape and engineering feat of the road.

We were camping in St Mary’s, so we automatically had a GTTS pass. I enjoy the pass system. The parks are becoming overrun and causing issues. Next time we visit, we might do the shuttle so we can enjoy stops along the road without dealing with parking, which is still difficult to find even with limited access.

Very good, but busy

By Tim G |

The road is great. Plenty of places to stop and hike (and we are all avid hikers), but the stops at this time of year are very busy. Lots of cars, lots of people. However, extremely photogenic!! I recommend the scenic stop at Goose Island towards the East end. The drive itself is fun, but not for my wife who doesn't like me driving too close to the edge. But if you go to Glacier, this drive is a must-do!

Always a breathtaking event

By CATTSAR |

While I'm only in Montana in the winter, and I can't get all the way through the park, it is still amazing!! On a good year, when I arrive, I can get to Avalanche on the west side and Rising Sun on the east side. Regardless I am never disappointed as to what I can see. The views from the base of Lake McDonald are among some of the most stunning anywhere. Heading up the lake it is an endless series of postcard perfect scenery. Arriving at Lake McDonald Lodge is always part of the ride and the road is always open to this point. There are a number of hikes accessible at this point and heading past the road closure on foot or by skis will continue to present sensational views, McDonald Falls are among my favorite. The east side is a lot more challenging once the road is closed, however the ride along US 2 and up US 89 to St. Mary can be gorgeous.  As a word of caution US 89 is under construction and is gravel for part of the way. Duck Lake Road is an alternative to access St. Mary, Babb or other points east. Be prepared for anything!! Supplies and bear spray are a must as there is very little open. Gas up in Browning and if you bring it in bring it out.

Beautiful drive

By db4r6286 |

Beautiful drive. Be patient and prepare to stop. Many breath taking views along the way. Many places to pull off and take pictures

Glacier National Park GTTS road

By Inspire820950 |

GTTS road is a two and a half hour scenic drive, which also offers you trails on your way, although parking is very limited.

Beautiful drive in beautiful National Park

By ron S |

Take your time , lots of pull off and beautiful scenery. A good piece of the spring and summer there is a timed entry requirement. Go both ways as you will get different views. Also plenty of hiking trails off the road. Watch for wildlife.

Stunning views at every curve!

By travels4jen |

Pretty drive thru GNP! Entered thru the West entrance, had some minor delays around Lake McDonald due to road construction but nothing major (last week of Sept). Very scenic with ‘wow’ factor the further we drove. We drove to St. Mary’s while enjoying stops along the way and loved the remoteness of the east side. We exited the park and drove back to Whitefish via East Glacier which was amazingly beautiful! Another day we drove GTTSR from east to west, and the view was more impressive than west to east! Definitely a must!

Fun

By aaronbaros |

We drove the whole road today, everything that is open anyway which I think is about five miles for so from the east gate, and it was really nice. Drive was worth it. Kind of busy at time with looking for parking spaces but very manageable. Totally worth it! Would love to do it again in the spring or fall as well.

Bucket List!

By ACTtherapist |

To me, the GTSR "IS" Glacier National Park. Fortunately, our first full day in the park, we had scheduled a Crown of the Continent tour with the red bus so all of us could freely enjoy the views and get familiar with the road and the stops. Another day, we all had shuttle tickets and again went the (almost) entire length and back on the excellent shuttle system, again enjoying the ride (this time for just $1). I strongly suggest if you want to go to the most popular areas such as Logan Pass or Avalanche, take the shuttles!! They are very comfortable, have large windows, are airconditioned, and the drivers are very kind and helpful (be sure to ask as you get on to make sure it's going where you need to go/get off). We were there during the 3rd week of July, presumably one of the most crowded times, did not get up early any day, and every time we went across the road noticed openings to park at most of the pullovers along the road (in total, went across it 3 times both ways). Another huge surprise for me was how many toilets you will find along this 50 mile road. Just nice to know they are there if needed. More were being added in another prominent area as well. My husband said it wasn't all that scary to drive, especially compared to some of our experiences in other national park/areas driving for instance in Yellowstone during a blizzard or Olympic in heavy fog. One time while driving it, we got stuck in a line of vehicles that were forced to creep along at a snail's pace because one driver up ahead was afraid and kept stopping right in the middle of the road. It was a small car which could easily have stayed in the appropriate lane, but would drive in the middle of the road creating a much more dangerous situation around the blind curves. And, she stopped in the most scary places which meant that instead of getting through them, you're stuck there being forced to look at how it seems you're going to drive right off into infinity (you're not but sometimes it looks that way). So that made one of the experiences much scarier because of how painfully slow we got through the most terrifying parts of the road, never knowing when she was going to stop. We passed many pullovers and opportunities for her to pull over, but she wouldn't pull over....just come to a stop in the road. Finally we pulled over to look out and let her get on through so we could drive at a more sane pace. Later though we caught up with her and it was an older woman driving alone. My heart goes out to her. I hope she was okay and honestly worried that she was having an adverse medical event. But I digress--bottom line is--if you are scared, please pull over to catch your breath at one of the many stop offs and let the line of cars behind you pass. It's not that bad.

A Must See in Glacier National Park

By Christina B |

We booked our GTSR $2 park pass well before we got there. It’s a must !! Along with our America the Beautiful parks Pass. We spent 2 full days traveling GTSR. First day we entered from the West & stopped for sights & hikes. After we hiked up to Logan Pass we went on to the east & our hotel. We were staying 2 nights on the east side. Lots to see & do there as well. We enjoyed a few locations on the east & then on 3rd day re-entered GTSR from the East & finished sights we had not yet done. I highly recommend downloading GYpsY App for audio tours. We have used them for many of the west parks. Easy to use, cheap & no time limit. It follows you along at your pace by GPS with so much information (bring an extra usb cord). No need for those Red Jammers that are everywhere. Being stuck in a large vehicle with 20 others to me is no fun. I enjoy going at our own pace & stopping when we want to. GTSR is 50 miles long & roughly 2 hour drive with no stops. There are so many places to stop and enjoy. Do a little research prior to see what interest you to allow enough time to cover it all.

Can't miss drive!

By Geoman59 |

Why are you even here is you are not going to drive the going-to-the-sun road?! That said, make plenty of time to drive the drive the road because it is busy and slow going. The road has many stops along the way to pull over and get that great picture you want to get. If you have time, hike the highline trail which runs along the top of the road to capture even more amazing views.

Get in the Car!

By County-Hunter |

While Glacier National Park is known as the hiker's park with some incredible hikes for people of all abilities, you absolutely can not miss the opportunity to drive on the Going to the Sun Hwy. I can remember my Dad talking about it and my Mom squirming in the font seat as she felt she was too close to the edge. That was 50 years ago and now, I finally got the chance to return with my wife. It's different than I remember it as there isn't nearly as much snow as there used to be. But the drive is one of the best in the country.

Because of Covid, the road is closed at Rising Sun so you can not traverse the park. My recommendation would be to drive all the way to Rising Sun with minimal stopping and checking out which viewpoints you would like to explore in more depth and than stop there on the way back. That way, you will be hitting these spots later in the day when the crowds have thinned a bit and parking will be easier to find.

Incredible views!

By db7477 |

We drove through Logan Pass four times on Going to the Sun Road on our visit to GNP. The views were incredible! It’s an absolute must! The weather influenced the views each time. Twice we crossed when the clouds completely covered the pass and we slowed to 5 mph and followed the yellow line.

Pretty

By Lauren Butterfield |

Some parts of this road are closed at the moment but it's very pretty and has a lot of places to pull off on the side of the road to take photos.

One of the Most Beautiful Places on Earth

By Mary G |

I have traveled the world and I have to say this is one of the most beautiful drives/visits I have ever done. The scenery and waterfalls are breathtaking. A must do.

All or part, if will never disappoint!

By CATTSAR |

While I have never gotten to drive the entire road I have repeatedly driven parts of it. By the time I arrive in Montana for the winter, most of the road is closed. Still, I am happy to drive in as far as possible. On this trip I got as far as Rising Sun and the St. Mary Lake boat launch on the east side. While I could not drive any further I was still able to hike a ways down the road. This was a first and an unexpected treat. Be advised that by early December the road is closed just past the St. Mary entrance and on the west side the road is closed at Apgar until late May 2023 due to upgrades. U.S. RT 2 along the southern boarder is quite spectacular.

Trek Travel Rules the Road

By Jack G |

We traveled to Montana in August 2019. There is no better way to view the dramatic 360 degree panoramic views of Going to the Sun Road than on a bicycle. For cyclists wanting to take on this challenge, there is no better company than Trek Travel. The views are unbelievably spectacular. Being on a bike allows one to stop at will and capture every spectacular scene on camera and even catch a glimpse of a bear! And there are just so many spectacular scenes to capture. Admittedly, the climb is a challenge. A little training is highly recommended. Unfortunately, for East coasters like us, the steep but relatively short climbs don’t do justice to what you will find in Montana. The grades are for the most part gentle, but the duration of the climbs becomes the challenge. My wife found it particularly challenging. However, making it to the top of the iconic Logan Pass is extremely rewarding endeavor.
Trek travel makes everything but the pedaling painless (although the snacks and the rest stops help!). You literally do not have to think the entire week. Trek gives you an outstanding bicycle, with a perfect fit, gets you and your luggage from hotel to hotel seamlessly and just makes the whole trip a pleasure. Our group of 20 riders bonded quickly and we all had an amazing time on and off the bike. The entire trip provides 5 days of riding and for more aggressive riders, 5 mountain climbs (warning, 2 big climbs are on day 1). The last climb of the week is the most difficult, but several of the climbs are optional with no pressure to skip them if you want. And of course, they will allow riders in the van at any point so no need for stress. This is our second Trek Travel trip and they are just an outstanding company. Props to our amazing guides Amy, Kelty and Jacob!!

Tip on vehicle reservations

By theresaf983 |

If you have not been able to secure your vehicle reservation and you are on the west side of the park, here is a tip. Go north on the road leading to Polebridge, turn right on Camas Rd. (there is a sign West Glacier), this road will take you straight into the park, straight onto Going to the Sun Road. Booth is not being manner due to low staff.

TOUCHING HEAVEN

By Juli S |

Wear a light jacket and be prepared to be awed!!!!! nothing like it in the whole USA...so breathtaking you need an o2 cart!!!

Gotta come back

By Susan M |

It rained almost every day, and the GTTSR was very foggy at Logan Pass, so visibility of the views were very limited. But we could tell, by little peeks here and there that it was full of spectacular views, so we have to cone back. Mostly because I did not see a bear, and I really want to see a mama bear and her babies!

Drove the Road the first day it had been completely opened. (June 2012)

By blackdog51 |

The towering sides of the snow banks left behind by the snow removal trucks were awesome and sometimes a little scary. It's a narrow two-lane road. Throw in a few road repair crews and it sometimes increases the 'pucker factor' considerably.

Beautiful park disappointing road maintenance and lack of reservation enforcement

Beautiful park! We had the opportunity to visit the park from 8/30 to 9/2/23. We reserved for all dates as instructed! We arrived at park before 7:00 am on 8/31 and 9/2/23. Both days, the gates were unattended. The reservation system states you need a reservation between the hours 6 am and 3 pm. My guess is the system was designed to restrict access to a very busy park and it's beautiful natural resources. By not having the gates properly manned has the potential to create crowding which it did as both days we could not get into the parking area at Logan's pass in the morning. The other set back was the construction or lack there of it! A 12 mile stretch of going to the sun road (at the west gate) had a surface that was rougher than the surface of the moon. Word has it, there was no active construction being performed all summer. It took us 45 mins to drive from the west entrance to Lake McDonald stables after entering the park before 7 am! The road conditions prove that park maintenance is not a priority. What a shame!

Awesome Experience

By Edward M |

Glacier Park and this road are among the most memorable life experiences. The views are unique and the wildlife can be plentiful. Be cautious driving this road, and especially of other drivers who are not paying total attention. Otherwise enjoy this trip and drive it with it being the destination and not elsewhere. It is one of a kind.

Its spectacular. Lots to do and see. Plan on a few days. If traveling the Road to the sun try to get an early start.

A few tips that may help you

By EC13091 |

What a beautiful road! There is little we can add to other reviews except some basic tips:
-Get a reservation early. We booked ours when the reservation for our days opened 120 days in advance. And do it early in the day (8AM Mountain Time). By the end of the day we booked, all spaces were gone.
-Go early to the park. One day we entered the park at 6:15AM, and on another day at 10:30. When we went at 1030, there was a 20-minute delay to get in.
-Don’t just drive the road from end-to-end. Stop along the way multiple times. And drive it in both directions. It’s a different experience in each direction.
-Visitor centers fill up early. There are multiple other places to stop along the road.
-The park’s website provides useful information on the crowds. Pay careful attention. We found all their advice right on the mark.

the drive of a lifetime, around every turn is the most incredible view you have ever seen in your life.

By Patricia McCartney |

An absolute must do if you are in glacier national park with a few hours to do it!
The road is well maintained with lots of little pull offs to take in all the incredible views around you. lots of incredible waterfalls run right across the road or off though the neer by peaks.
The road gets very narrow at points and can be intimidating, depending entirely on the way other drivers are behaving. however as long as you stay in your lane there is nothing to worry about. I drove a full sized Tacoma TRD Pro up and back with plenty of room to spare.
saint marrys lake is also a wonderful place to take a swim if you have time to stop you should do it!
if you dont bring you camera for this drive and plan a few hours to do it you are really missing out!

Take the drive

The perfect drive. So beautiful. Its breath taking. Stop take your time. You will never see anything as beautiful as this drive. The kids loved it. Get out stop and enjoy.

Great views! You must experience this!

By Jeremy W |

If you visit Glacier NP, you have to drive this road, or you have not been to the park. The views are amazing. The visitor center at Logan's Pass is a good stopping point and has restrooms. Many areas to pull-out and enjoy the scenery. Lots of great hiking as well. On our last trip, we saw a black bear, mountain goat, deer and 3 bighorn sheep.

Start early and stay all day

By DSP_MPS_Gmail |

So many things to see and do along the road. They just started to meter the amount of people that can go on the road...I support this...but you can also game this a bit by coming early and just staying in the park all day. We learned to go to Logan Pass 1st thing of the day before it gets crowded (woke up at 0430 to be through the gates before 0500). Saw more wildlife and stunning views that way too with the sun coming up. We also stayed all day and got the benefit of the park at twilight as well. Parking can get dicey at times, and the road is not wide so you will get nervous with a big vehicle passing another vehicle...but you can usually find a place to park for whatever you want to see you just might have to drive around or drive past and see something else and then circle back for what you missed. The GyPSy app did a good job telling us what to stop for and what to look out for, albeit a bit annoying at times. You may want to break this into a couple days also as there's a lot of hikes and side trips that may make you miss some areas of the road that you want to spend more time with. We really didn't plan on enough time there, and will be back someday.

Must do!

By CoachJeffro |

This drive should be on everyone's bucket list. We chose to enter at St. Mary's, and drive east to west. You don't have to have a vehicle reservation to do this route. We only had one day to spend and we took our time, utilizing several of the pull outs.

fabulous

Really one of the seven wonders of the world .Easy to drive on,better paved than many roads in the USA .Absolutely gorgeous drive ,many places to stop and hike .Necessary to get an early start to find parking

Stunning

By Craig |

What a stunningly beautiful experience! The Going-to-the-Sun Road's beauty takes your breath away, as does the views on both sides of the road. It truly reminds one just how small we really are in the scheme of things.

Absolutely amazing

By CPaM68 |

Over the years we have been to Glacier twice and have taken the Going-to-the-Sun Road both times. The first time, many years ago, we only got as far as Logan Pass with the road still being closed on the west side with snow. This is certainly something you should do if you're taking a trip to Montana and a must-do if you actually get to Glacier. If you have good weather you are in for some spectacular views and gorgeous vistas. I agree with another post that I wish we would have taken more time at each of the pull-overs to take more beautiful postcard-worthy photos. Good idea to bring your own food, snacks and water. It is very busy and nowadays you need a reservation to enter the park which you should get well in advance of your planned visit. If I ever have chance to go again I want to take a ride on one of the old red busses over the pass. If you've never been to Glacier, you should make an effort to go. Highly recommend. (PaM)

Awesome

By HIBBIE |

Really worth the time. Amazing views. Took lots of pictures. The day we went, Sunday, traffic was heavy but not bad. We left the east side at 11am and got to the west, after a few stops, around 1:30. Had lunch and returned. We took our rental car but it was not a driving experience for the faint of heart. The Red Buses were sold out so I jammed the gears in the rental.

Great Park and Road, horrible biased reservation system

By Geoman |

Booking is ridiculous. I was logged in ahead of time, and at EXACTLY 08:00:00 tried to get passes with pre-filled application with credit card on file, etc. Total Denial Of Service situation with servers overloaded (probably by paid bots). Four days in a row-average person stands little chance. Sad to be LOCKED OUT of the GTSR corridor during the day. Submission for a daily random lottery would be much more fair.

Having said that, I still respect the park's motivation to ease overcrowding along this corridor. I hope they can more intelligently modify this system to make it fair. Until then, will have to travel at off times in this corridor.

Beautiful Views/East Side Entrance

By RobintheWriter |

We went in after 5pm when you don't need a ticket. (It's tough to get a ticket, visit recreation.gov at least 2 months before you go). Awesome views of mountains and waterfalls. Lots of huge pine trees. We had to turn around about 1/3 of the way across, snow was still in the peaks of the park. Did not get the iconic "Shining" views that I thought I'd get, I think those may be on the west side or closer to the middle of the park. Overall, very nice!

Get on the road early. Around 10am parking in stoping points is full. Lots of people going on the trails so again hit the road early. Go to the end and then work your way down. Visit goose island before noon for great pics.Lots of stoping points, great views. There was lots of people taking in cosideration covid 19. If you want to see waterfalls go mid july its beutifull. Logan pass parking is full by 7am so no chance to park there. Watch where you park if its not parking spot you will get a ticket from the park police and its not safe to park in random places as the road is really narow.
If you do not want to do long trails there is some ahort ones right of that road.
Have fun drive safe and if you renting rent compact car you will see what im talking.

Glacier Trips

My wife and I have been to Glacier over 30 times since we moved to Idaho from back east. It is our favorite Park to visit. A number of years ago we were lucky enough to ride our ATV's across Going to the Sun Road. That was unbelievable.

See Glacier WITHOUT a driving reservation

By DesertLight27 |

IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ! If you want to avoid this Going-to-the-Sun “Driving Reservation Nonsense,” drive into the park BEFORE 5:55 am. That means drive past the West Glacier checkpoint or the Rising Sun checkpoint(s) BEFORE the rangers set up the barricades at 6:00 am on Going to the Sun Road. Our group got up at 4:15 am, (packed breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a cooler the night before) and drove past those unmanned checkpoints by 5:40 am (on both sides). We spent three beautiful days in the park WITHOUT A DRIVING RESERVATION. Now this means you are stuck in the park for the day, but what a lovely place to get stuck. At this writing (late July 2022), the rangers were removing the checkpoint/barricades at 4:00 pm daily (meaning everyone can now get into the park without a reservation), which caused a major traffic jam getting into the park that resolved itself after 30 minutes. So you can still see the park without a driving reservation (do NOT cancel your trip!), you just need to get up in the middle of the night and drive past those aforementioned checkpoints before 5:55 am. This is one of the most beautiful drives in the USA and well worth a few lost hours of sleep!

Wow!

By Jeff S |

Spent the day traveling on the road. It's just amazing. I don't know how else to describe it. You just need to see it.

One of the most beautiful drives

By kcovey26 |

A must do!

Start early and plan to spend time at Logan Pass (get there early to get parking or you will have to walk a ways - which is okay too!). We saw loads of mountain goats, big horn sheep, marmot, and a bear while there.

Great Drive and Views

By crutt13 |

The road is windy, a bit slow, but offers many amazing views. There are pull outs at various spots to soak up the views. We had a unique opportunity when visiting this year. The road was closed from Avalanche Creek to the East gate. My daughter and I hike 5 miles on it and wow! The Garden wall was amazing, we could listen to the river and watch the many waterfalls coming down the mountain from the melting snow.

I'd say its a must do, but you literally need to take it to go anywhere in the park.

Simply Amazing!

By Cowboyjwm |

Clearly the most beautiful scenic drive in America. It can be closed in the winter due to snow. The views and scenery over the top are not to be seen anywhere else.

RESERVATIONS NEEDED

By Gayle F |

From 6 in the morning until 4 In the afternoon you need a reservation to enter the park. Either a reservation for the car or a reservation a shuttle bus. Or staying in in lodging in the park. Otherwise you CANNOT.and I repeat CANNOT enter the park. Before 6 and after 4 is allowed, but from 10 at night to 6 in the morning there is road construction and part of the road is closed.
We came in at 4 and drove entire road. YEAH!!!!!! Loved the mountains and the trees and the waterfalls. I am so glad we got to drive though the park.

Beauty

By Casey M |

Absolutely stunning. This Road is a must see. There are many trails that are accessible from this road, varying in difficulty. Gypsy Guide was very interesting to listen too along the way.

GORGEOUS.

By Maureen B |

The beauty is beyond anything I’ve ever seen. We took our time and stopped at many turnouts to take in how beautiful it is. We needed a special pass to enter the west end of the road. Make sure you get one. My photos don’t due it justice.

Gorgeous Views

By nowpacking |

We drove through on a beautiful day - literally a few days before the road was closed because of snow on Logan Pass.
There was a thirty minute wait to get in the west entrance. You must arrive very early!
All of the pullovers along Lake McDonald were closed due to construction. The parking lot at Logan Pass was full and we waited 20-30 minutes driving around for someone to leave.
The east side of the park, which is our favorite was lined with burnt trees from a past fire.
Despite all of these obstacles there are still many beautiful views!
Hopefully you will have good weather because the light is important for beautiful photographs.
Bring food, snacks and water because nothing is available on the road.

What a road

By Robbert L |

What a road. We came from the eastern side/St Mary as there is, opposed to the western side/Lake McDonald, no timed entry. From.this eastern side the route to the top is pretty easy, once over the top one can see the steepness and longitude of the road on the west side. Amazing views.

Must see road

By maapar |

We had vehicle reservations for 2 days, thankfully. Our first day it rained all day and we still did western part of road since we were staying in West Glacier. The next day, the road was initially closed due to ice in higher elevations. We drove on route 2 to east glacier entrance at St Mary and by then the entire road was open
So we got to drive the entire road and it was really spectacular. Did some shorter hikes. Highlights are Jackson glacier overlook, triple arches, beautiful lakes.

Amazing!

By kentuckylongrifle |

The Going-to-the-Sun-Road is just Amazing and the views are Breathtaking. However, I wouldn’t wish to drive it. We used the parks shuttle service for traveling the road and going up to Logan’s pass. I’m glad we did as there were several accidents on the road during our visit and we were almost side-swiped twice while on the road.

That being said, we traveled the road on 3 separate days and were just awe inspired by the majestic scenery that is the mountains, the cascading waterfalls and valley that the road presents. Even if you travel it just once, it will be well worth your time. Safe Travels.

Tour Guide - Glacier Park

We had a wonderful time and tour with Lester (senior). Not only was he informative of the area and interesting, but he also gave information on the Blackfeet Native Americans, which was very educational. We certainly enjoyed the tour and would recommend Lester (senior) as a tour guide

Unbelievable drive !! Do not miss it

By w951fb4 |

This is a fabulous 50-mile drive that is a must do activity when visiting Glacier National Park. A $2 ticket is needed to enter this road which is available on Recreation.gov. We tried to buy this ticket ahead of time but it was sold out for the days of our visit. Option B is to get a ticket on the park shuttle, which was sold out as well. Then we found out that approx 200 same day tickets are released each day at 8 am. We logged in and were able to secure it 😀. This ticket is in addition to the park entrance ticket.

We stopped at multiple places along the way on the way from Apgar visitor center to St. Mary visitor center. You return the same way. It took us approx 1.5 hours on the way back without stopping anywhere. There is no food or gas along this route so be prepared.

Pictures and videos cannot do justice to this natural wonder. You just have to experience it !!

Amazing

This road is a marvel through GNP!! On our first day there we took the guided red bus tour. Vic our driver made for a great day!! Can't say enough good things. This will not disappoint in the least

I can't believe HOW BEAUTIFUL our earth is!!!

By Hstrybuff |

This one one of our favorite things we did in Glacier. SOOOOOO incredibly beautiful! Takes you through all kinds of scenery. Forests, Lakes, Mountains, Glaciers, Water "Walls", plateaus, plains, valleys, views, more views and then even more views! Sometimes.......I just can't believe HOW BEAUTIFUL the earth is!!! She's a STUNNER!!!

Wow, it's just breath taking

This is so beautiful. Spent the whole day traveling and exploring this road. You just have to check this out.

One of My Favorite Drives

By fiamma11 |

Going-to-the-Sun road is absolutely breathtaking. There are scenes worthy of postcards around every turn. If going in the spring, be sure to check if the road is open yet. Snow removal on this road is a formidable task and can take into June to be open. This is a must do during one's lifetime. Absolutely amazing.

Beautiful

By Vacamom |

We drove the road from west glacier to east. Stunning views along the way. Places to pull off and hike or to just enjoy the beauty around you.
If you plan to stop at Logan pass get there early. The crowds are huge and there may be no parking later in the day. We have been to Glacier a few times and will definitely be going back.

One of the best National Parks I have ever been visited!

By Greg H |

First time to Glacier National Park and was not disappointed. The scenery is amazing and I would recommend going at two different times, in the morning and in the evening. The colors and lighting make a huge difference at the different times. If you are hiking, the evening times might be better to find parking. My wife and I tried for two days to find parking spots at both Avalanche and Logan's Pass without any luck. Went after 5pm and found parking easier. Definitely recommend multiple days to check out everything.

A visual treat ... and photographic paradise!

By jetsly |

Glacier, with its deep mountain lakes and rushing streams, its majestic peaks and heavily forested cliff sides, is one of our favorite national parks. And then there's the sheer fun that goes with driving Going to the Sun road ...
Because the park offers so many opportunities for photography, we always try to drive the park in the first two and a half hours after dawn, or in the last two and a half hours before sunset. We prefer an afternoon entrance at St. Mary so that we can shoot the lake with the sun at our backs. Proceeding through the park (after checking our brake fluid at the entrance) at a slow pace (lots of driving in lower gears), here we tend to take what the sun gives us rather than gimmick the photographs the way we do in the Tetons.
Remember, if you want to visit the park in high season, there is a ticketed entry system in play here (ended on Labor Day), which is keyed to making sure that the parking areas are not overwhelmed. The park website will walk you through the details. Enjoy!

Shuttle Service

By digitalroc |

I had taken the Going to the Sun Road a few times in the past with friends, but this was the first time via shuttle. Since there is virtually no parking at Logan Pass, I took the free shuttle service from Saint Mary Visitor Center, which is a good way to see the scenery while travelling alone.

The 28-seat van was air conditioned on a very hot September day as it left the Saint Mary Visitor Center. The shuttle stops at every stop based on a 20-minute schedule. The only issue with the shuttle, was the return from Logan Pass to Saint Mary Visitor Center, as people were waiting for 45-minutes and there was a massive amount of people. Two 11-seat vans arrived, and there was a mass rush to the vans to get a seat. People were standing in the van, which I thought was against the National Park policy. I probably won’t do the shuttle again, but I did notice that nearly every stop had no parking, so I am glad that I tried the shuttle.

The Going to the Sun Road is a spectacular journey, and there are multiple scenic stops, so I recommend that you set aside the full day in order to do it right.

Awesome

By Diana O |

Absolutely spectacular views that far surpassed all my expectations. Photos literally don't do it justice. The mountains, valleys, peaks, ponderosa pine silhouetting the sky, it's just staggeringly gorgeous. Being a native to the east coast, we just never saw views like this before and it was a powerful experience. The drive is no joke. I did the driving and my husband, who has a fear of heights, was a nervous wreck at the most twisty and narrow portions, and we were on the INSIDE of the road (near the mountain, not near the edge). We purposely drove to the East entrance (St Mary) so that we could do the whole drive east-to-west instead of the typical west-to-east. It worked out well for the earlier stops. Rising Sun was my favorite, just a perfect, jaw-dropping view. By the time we got to Logan Pass in the mid-afternoon, of course it was "full" and rangers were not even letting anyone into the parking lot. At least let people go in and circle around for anyone who might be leaving! Typical government operation. Build a multilevel parking garage already. Obviously the lot isn't adequate. I know everyone says "come early" but not being able to at least try to park at Logan Pass and do the associated hikes was supremely disappointing, considering the distance we traveled and expense.

Loved it twice

By AptosAmy |

Closed to cars on July 5, 2022 but a great place to hike. We really enjoyed two hikes, one from the west doing 18 mi RT and one from the east doing 10 mi roundtrip. How sweet is it to walk when cars can't go due to heavy spring snows and avalanches. The bikers adore it.

Thrilling

By LB_8710 |

I had no idea what I signed up for when I bought my pass for this road. It was a thrilling (maybe terrifying) drive! And, it’s quite a long drive. Stopping at Logan Pass was difficult for parking, but it was definitely worth the effort! We hiked to the Hidden Lake Overlook. The trail to the lake was closed due to bear activity.
Taking the road is definitely worth the time. We did utilize the free shuttle after our first day though. I would recommend this if anyone in your party gets nervous on the narrow, twisty mountain roads!

Amazing Vistas

By Steve Bielmeier |

Our family enjoyed the road and we were lucky enough to get a vehicle pass two days prior to going to Glacier. The route is well-maintained and the views are stunning. There are plenty of places to pull-over and capture the views. This is a must-do for anyone going to Glacier National Park.

Amazing

By michellehouse |

I know people have complained about the new ticketed system but I was able to get a pass 60 days before my travel date without any problems. We got to the West Entrance about 8AM and the road was already fairly busy. I'm assuming that ticket entry has made morning crowds a little worse with people trying to get in before 6AM without a ticket. But we were able to drive West to East and able to stop at just about all the pull outs. Avalanche Lake and Logan Pass were full no matter how what time of day we passed by (we only tried Logan Pass once on the way East and again on the way West). We stopped at Sun Point (got there about 8:45-9) and the parking lot was empty. We hiked the 3 falls trail (about 5ish miles out and back) with minimal other hikers on the way out (much busier on the way back). We picnicked after our hike at Sun Point before finishing at the East Visitor's Center where the kids turned in Jr Ranger books. We drove back West (we were staying in Whitefish) and stopped at a pull out by Lake Mcdonald and let the kids burn off steam by splashing around in the lake.

Poor park management

By Padmapriya K |

We visited the park during the memorial weekend 2021. We were out of state and had booked our tickets long back . The 2$ entry ticket imposed was not done properly . The only entrance that was opened without the 2$ entry ticket was two medicines (many glaciers opening date got postponed two days prior to our visit ): when we went to two medicines , the ranger said the entrance is shut down as there is no parking space and we were asked to come late in afternoon . Seriously , the only entrance without the ticket shuts down within hours of opening !!! We tried the ticket sharp at 8 am, but it kept says low traffic . We purchased the boat tour only so we can enter the going to sun road . I feel park management should have different options or impose the rule when all the entrances are open .

You can enter the park before 6 am or 5 pm but still it does not work for me everyone . We did enter and the view was breathtaking!

Must do trip

Great way to see GNP. Our tour guide, Jack Gladstone, is a native Blackfoot Indian who added personal commentary and insight. Must do if you only have a few days in the park.

An EPIC experience! US’s crown jewel!

By coolwestsider |

This is an experience of a lifetime to be in the crown jewel of US national parks (in my opinion). We did GNP as a third leg of our vacation after Grand Teton and Yellowstone. This engineering marvel of a road takes top honors as the epic experience. I had planned this vacation for a while and had done extensive preparation. Both NPS website and google search have been providing plenty of information that NPS was instituting a ticket system for going to the sun road, so I purchased the $2 entry ticket 60 days ahead. I had no problem and that worked out really well. As for this road itself, there is no word to describe it. We entered from the west entrance on Thursday. After driving past lake McDonald, the elevation starts picking up and the drive is not for the faint of hearts, however, every lookout that you could find parking at gives you an insane view of the park. After we passed The Loop which is the only switchback, we found a lookout area and picnicked. No other lunch has ever tasted better. We got to Logan Pass around 1 pm and as it’s mentioned plenty of times, the parking lot was full. We circled the a few times, couldn’t find parking and headed towards St Mary’s. We ended up doing the St Mary’s and Virginia Falls hike which in itself is one of the best and popular hikes off of this road. We really wanted to hike at least a park of the Highline Trail which starts at Logan Pass, so we returned on Saturday. We noticed a lot of cars leaving towards west entrance and the park relatively less full. After circling Logan pass parking lot couple of times, we found parking. It was around 2 pm. The Highline trail is epic and even my parents who are over 70 did about 1.5 mile on it. What an experience. Oh, we saw marmots and mountain goats on various parts of going to the sun road. We then drove down towards 2 medicine lake. Both St Mary and Two Medicine Lakes are stunning. Not enough to days to even cover a small portion of the park. So we will be coming back.

Great drive

By paula c |

We visited when the road was still being plowed so we only got about 6 miles beyond the lodge. However, the short drive was beautiful.

Poor Info GNP

By Hannah S |

We had a great time in West Glacier (June 26-28)! It was difficult to find information about the closures in the park though. The signage and information was not great when driving in the park. While driving on Going To The Sun Road, there is no warning of closures until you are about 20 minutes down the road. Do not plan your day around being able to go past Lake McDonald Lodge. The road is was closed 2/3 days while we visited, with little information or explanation from the park rangers. My friends and I completed the Sperry Trail hike yesterday (~ 12 miles). It was beautiful! We did not see any bears or goats, but we did see bear scat. There was lots of snow at the top. Also, it is NOT a loop hike as I’ve read on other reviews. I hope this helps anyone visiting soon!

Amazing drive but go early

By Amy W |

The drive is well worth the time. There is a ton to see along the way. We started the drive around 6am and so happy we did. The road can get exciting so we were happy to take our time and not have a ton of cars stacked up around us. Logans Pass parking lot was about half full when we got up there. It was completely full when we passed by a couple hours later. Go early!!

Wow ! Just Wow!

By Brian G |

10/10 this is one of the most amazing drives I have ever been on. It is simply amazingly beautiful. This is definitely a bucket list item.
I would not take an oversized vehicle on this.
The road is narrow and windy.
And, one side of the road is rock.

Going to the Sun Road

By GoVols79 |

The day we drove the Going to the Sun road was cloudy and rainy but still spectacular. We came in on the east side since it didn’t require timed reservations and made our way west. We stopped at Logans Pass and hiked to Hidden Lake Overlook. Afterwards we drove to Apgar Village where we were staying. Even with the weather there were plenty of cars on the road. We would love to return sometime when the sun is out.

By Brian R |

Just a wonderful ride ! Go to the top for breath taking view and down to the lake for ice cream. Wish I was there right now lol

Go to Yellowstone or Tetons until they opened the park!! Ticket system is horrible!!

By Stacey K |

Only one road to get into the park. It’s nearly impossible to get a ticket. I have tried and failed to get one. Went after hours but this ticket system is horrible!! I even went before 5 AM but your ticket system is not good! Locals buy up the camping spots, third parties get tickets and they are good for 7 days!!
Should be open just like any other Park! We came from Yellowstone and it was amazing!! Not over crowded nor was the TNP! Open it up!! Made our four day, three night stay a little difficult. We choose to go do other things… Would of loved to hike in such a beautiful place.

The views are breathtaking!!!!

By Sierra Scott |

It's a WILD ride that's NOT for the faint of heart... some passageways are so tight between cras I thought we were going to knock each others side mirrors off. But every second was worth it to see these views.
I highly recommend you take this trip in September (like we did) when thr park is less crowded. We were able to pull off at every overlook and spent lots of time taking pictures.
If you take this road be sure to go all the way to Many Glacier Hotel. It's worth the trip!

Beautiful mountains, even without glaciers

By Sharon G |

While it was beautiful and iconic, the lack of glaciers made the experience somewhat disappointing. The pass system worked well for us, but there was still trouble parking at a number of the pullovers.
We've had real experience at glaciers in Glacier Bay, Mendenhall Glacier near Juneau and Athabasca in Canada. Here we saw a few piles of dirty snow, and nothing that looked like a real glacier from the road.

A really wonderful drive!

By tgrdvrmd |

It is too hard to describe what a wonderful excursion this is. We went in a van on the first day the road opened and the visibility was outstanding. There are too many great things to describe in this short form, so just go and admire the beautiful Glacier National Park!

One of my favorite National parks

By MF S |

Even with the park only partially opened in 2020, the drive is just spectacular. Thoroughly enjoyed our drive and the trails that were open. This park is a must!

Busy but worth it

By Brittany_11_10 |

Super busy, with East Glacier being closed right now b/c of The Covid, but still worth driving up (to Logan Pass, and then 12 miles beyond that where you'll need to turn around due to the road closure). Stunning scenery, like the rest of the park, and lots of places to pull over and snap some photos.

Definitely Do This Doable Drive

I am a middle aged, Midwestern mom, traveling with my older teen daughter in a Toyota Camry. Yes, the road is quite curvy and totally thrilling, but it's definitely doable with speeds only reaching 45 mph. The curves are 25! We went during the most crowded time, too, and for us, the others drivers were considerate and everyone gave space and time. There are so many pull off areas, too, that breaks are easy to find. I gave it only 4 stars due to the disappointing "entrance pass" that was impossible to find. I booked a boat tour in St. Mary's to get access thru Glacier Boat Company and it was fabulous. We were able to hike, too. Take some food and snacks and spend a full day along this wonderful road with majestic views.

A must drive in the park

This is a must drive at Glacier National Park. Some drivers like to ride your bumper but let them, drive at your pace and enjoy the park. You see some of the glaciers and beautiful meadows and mountains. The road is only open during some month of the year so be sure to check the National Park website for closures.

Opening Day of Going to the Sun Road July 2020

By Pearl G |

The Going to the Sun road is one of life’s must do experiences. The road is open during limited summer months. Usually late June to late September. This year we were able to experience the drive on opening day. Prepare for views beyond imagination. The mountain vistas, waterfalls, deep valleys below and changing sky, make the drive a changing palette of colors and sights at every turn. Not to miss.

Amazing

This road is so amazing, but terrifying also! Narrow road with lots of switchbacks. So beautiful and so many things to see. Unfortunately most of the pull off areas are full of vehicles so people park in dangerous places and walk in road that is barely wide enough for two cars to pass each other. We went in early on our second day and was able to stop at most places we were unable to visit the previous day. It was still busy, but we were leaving as more cars were pouring in. It is something everyone should see and so glad we were able to visit

Spectacular Drive

Wow....How amazing. We had been in the park two days hiking. We saved Going to The Sun Road for last. This is a must do attraction. The scenery is breathtaking. The drive to Logans Pass is just amazing. The narrow tow lane road is a bit treacherous making it even more exciting. Traffic was heavy but not impossible. Parking spots at pull outs were near capacity. Finding a parking spot at Logans pass was more difficult. All spots were full and many cars circling the lot waiting for someone to leave. We waited 30 minutes for a spot. The rangers say to arrive before 7:30 am or after 5:30 to avoid traffic. Restrooms are available at the visitors center as well as a nice gift shop. This is a bucket list experience. We saw sheep and ground squirrels. The water is so beautiful and crystal clear. Take snacks and drinks and maybe a picnic lunch as nothing is available in the park. We planned our day to drive across the mountain and picnic close to St Marys La!ke. Day to be remembered! Must DO . Plan to spend the day
