NEED A MONTH!

By OSiddons |

Do not miss out on this treasure. This park is absolutely beautiful, though you need a month to really enjoy its complete beauty!

Walk the Park.

By Phillip G |

We caught a number 5 bus down to the Great Highway which is far as the bus goes. Take in the Ocean View there and start your walk next to the Dutch Windmill along John F Kennedy Drive. To appreciate the beauty of the park you really need a full day and comfortable footwear. Ideally grab hold of a local tourist map before you go because this gives you an overview and you won’t get lost. The De Young Museum in the grounds on Hagiwara Drive is worth a visit but there is an entrance charge. You will also find restrooms there and a food outlet.

Beautiful landscape.

By Fearless Rabbit |

Beautiful landscape. A really nice place for a walk. It was a fun family Beautiful day. Loved the Ferris wheel. The park is very large and offers variety of activities. A good place to take the break after exploring near by museums.

Golden Gate Park is one of the great parks of the world

By bbdn796 |

We’ve been to over 60 countries and Golden Gate Park ranks up there with the best. The DeYoung Museum and the Academy of Sciences are wonderful and the scenic walks and drives are beautiful. Amazing as it was built on sand dunes.

60th Anniversary Celebrating the Grateful Dead

By blakechastain |

Out of this world experience with the Conservatory Gardens & Golden Gate Park. 60th anniversary of the Grateful Dead 3 day concert was truly being part of history.

Nice

By Steve G |

Lots of people using the park, nice tree lined area, Keizer Stadium in the park, busy, busy traffic!

Best part was the free park shuttle and the Dahlia Garden

By retireeVancouver |

Upon entering the park at the 10th Ave entrance, we saw the green bench where we could wait for the free shuttle which would take us to all of the spots in the park we had come to see - the Conservatory of Flowers, the Japanese Tea Garden, the Rose Garden, Botanic Gardens. The shuttle's route (a map with its stops) and timing at each spot (every 15 min on weekends) was available on their website which helped us in planning our visit. The shuttle was a very convenient and quick way to get to the Conservatory of Flowers which is furthest away from the centrally located art gallery, science center, and Japanese Tea Garden - a distance I wouldn't have wanted to walk.

In October, the Dahlia Garden put on a good show of a variety of bloom types and colors, but one has to know where at the Conservatory this area is located as it is not "front and center". This stop was a highlight for me. We didn't enter the Conservatory ($7, senior rate), but would have popped in for a short visit had it been free. Washrooms (free) were conveniently located outside the Conservatory to the left. Beds of annuals (fibrous begonias and foxgloves) in front of the Conservatory were showy, but I expected to see more beds of flowering annuals and perennials on these grounds.

The Japanese Tea Gardens ($7 senior rate) was overpriced for this small, but attractive garden. We spent under 30 minutes walking a narrow paved walkway around a picturesque pond to look up to 2 tall red buildings nestled among the trees now showing a touch of autumn red on their leaves. We circled back to the tea house and gift shop and exit. Washrooms were available only after paying the entrance fee as where eats in their Tea House. Eats were expensive - a plate of assorted fortune and other cookies was $7 and tea was $5.50.
The art gallery (a fee) did have a cafe with a free entrance from the park. Tea/coffee in the cafeteria style casual eatery was $3.50 with boxed ready made salads, sandwiches just under $10. Although there were food carts in the park, each seemed to focus on selling hot dogs ($7 at one cart), chip bags, water and pop ($2.50).
The green formal garden in front of the art gallery is mainly a photo stop where the central fountain and view of the ferris wheel are of interest. Even the ferris wheel, which offered enclosed glassed cabins and 2 benches to seat 4ish people, was expensive ($25) as was the science center.

The Rose Garden (free) in October would be a visit to miss as it needs quite a bit of attention - weeds in beds, old rusty horticulture signs barely readable, beds with dead rose plants, roses needed dead-heading, lawn between the rose beds needed mowing. Some roses were re-blooming, but not enough to warrant a visit. However, walking thru the Rose Garden sidewalk did lead to our bus 28 stop across the road for a ride back to Fisherman's Wharf/Pier area.

Although we didn't enter the Botanic Garden (another $7 senior rate), it did look, from its entrance, as though it would be a worthwhile visit for the $7.
I was surprised that every major garden in the park that I wanted to visit had an entrance fee. Even with a discounted senior's rate, these entrance fees would add up to an expensive day out. The free shuttle was thus a surprise.

We used local buses to get to the park from the cruise pier 27. It was fun to take the Powell/Mason Street trolley ($8) to Market St and then Bus 5 ($1.50 srs) to the 10th Ave Park entrance. Note Bus 5R from Market Street doesn't run on weekends. Bus 28 also goes to the park from the pier and returns on the same route - just under 1 hr ride each way.

A day out in this park can get expensive so plan what you really want to see and use the free shuttle bus to get around the park.

A beautiful adventure!

By Brooke In The Air Travel LLC |

An extremely fun park, second only to New York City's central park, full of arenas and concerts, the San Francisco Botanical Garden, the California Academy of Sciences, the Japanese Tea Garden. And more!

Just Skip It!

By Heidi M |

On our last day of vacation my family and I decided to visit Golden Gate Park. We parked on Martin Luther King Dr near the Japanese Tea Garden. I knew about the frequent car break in's so I placed all valuables in the trunk area of our rented SUV, and didn't plan on spending a lot of time in the park. It didn't matter. We came back to the vehicle after about an hour and found our passenger rear window smashed out and two of our kids backpacks were missing. The car parked in front of us had the same experience. Please avoid this area if you are parking a car of any kind! Our rental car agent said that they have had 40 car break ins in SF in the last month! In contrast, we take a week vacation in southern Cal every year (Oceanside and San Diego) for the last 15 years and NOTHING like this has ever happened there. What's wrong with SF?

Beautiful Park

By cohoman |

This park is huge (about 3.5 miles in length). Lots of walkways and bike paths. There's also a few streets which you can drive your car from one end to the other. I really enjoyed checking out the two beautiful Dutch windmills on the West end of the park. Free street parking available.

A Gift From the City

By Pam Heath |

Among all of the "Hussel and Bussel," in the City, you find this wonderful oasis. A great place to relax and enjoy natural beauty.

San Francisco’s Green Gem!

By Lina E |

Golden Gate Park is a San Francisco treasure, larger than Central Park and full of things to explore. You’ll find miles of trails for walking or biking, wide lawns for picnics, and lakes with paddle boats. At Strawberry Hill, the park’s highest point, you can enjoy peaceful views, a small waterfall, and dog-friendly paths. We even came across a fun “sea monster” exhibition. Perfect for families, pet owners, or anyone who loves the outdoors.

Too large

By Phil P |

Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to visit most of the park. The part we visited was fun with music and entertainment.

Lovely Park

By Steve F |

Walked from one end to the Ocean at the other and then back - really nice walk (about 9 miles). Lakes, meadows, windmills, colourful flowers, lots going on including drumming jamming session at Hippie Hill.

Great walk

By Kevin B |

Great park with expansive trails and scenery. Definitely a few miles if you want to walk to the coast. Plenty of places to stop on the way

Golden Gate, Golden Opportunity

By robdids |

Okay, I’ve seen some large and impressive parks around the world including in my home City and Golden Gate Park is one of the best. There is a wonderful diversity in the the biology and landscape. Coupled with interesting views, lakes and attractions such as the Japanese Gardens, De Young museum, Bison paddock or windmills it’s a must do in San Francisco. We walked the entire length and width of the park, eventually making it to the ocean.

Natural beauty

By travelhungry2014 |

Wow, this is never ending. Many beautiful parts to this park. It was a great day spent outdoors exploring. It is well worth the extra exercise.

A fantastic park.

By TheShis |

This is a fantastic and very popular park to spend a couple of hours strolling in.
The park features numerous lakes, lawns, picnic areas and some wildlife.

Massive

By tinylass |

We barely touched the park on our visit to SF as it is sooo big. We got the Big Bus hop-on-hop-off which dropped us outside the California Academy of Sciences and opposite the de Young Museum. We visited the Japanese Tea Garden and potted around this area but didn't venture through the rest of the park. You'd need a full day to see even a quarter of it but it was worth a visit, even for a few hours.

Amazing for walking!

By Lauren S |

This park is so beautiful, you could easily walk through here multiple times a trip. There was lots to see, parking was easy the earlier you got there, and it was always full of life. Everyone was a great mask wearer! Hardest part is sharing the road, honestly - we did minimal driving in the park and stuck to the paved paths, and there was always a bike, skateboarder, or runner to watch out for.

Large park with a lot of non-inclusive amenities

By Bruce B |

Golden Gate Park is a great place to go if you want to spend an entire day paying to go into different smaller areas to see things. We arrived on a bus tour and were surprised to have to spend even more to see things that most other cities would offer free of charge (Japanese Tea Garden, for example).

Walk to the Ocean

By Neil |

This is a long thin park on the west of SF. There are areas where you might have to pay so look up botanical and Chinese gardens for prices. The rest of the park caters for almost every other outdoor pursuit and may not be what your expecting if you want large vistas and picnics. Excellent walk to the Ocean and take some wood for the fire pits at sun set if you get a chance 🔥

Fantastic park

By Bob. B |

Huge urban park with a wide variety of attractions. Particularly enjoyed the San Francisco Botanical Garden and the nearby Japanese Tea Garden.

Well maintained piece of the nature in SF

By sashkow |

Beautiful is the main characteristic of this park in my opinion. The nature in this area is so powerful and nice. Weekend days is quite busy- the good news is they close the main road so you can bike, skate etc.

San Francisco's Jewel of a Park

By Mike K |

Is there a better metropolitan park anywhere? Yes, the buffalo roam here - a small herd. Science museum, art museum, rose garden, palm trees, horse riding, Japanese tea garden, a golf course, soccer fields, tennis courts, arboretum, open play spaces, ponds Outside Lands rock festival which has hosted the likes of Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Tom Petty and almost everyone else. Plus the ultimate Fall festival - Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival which is completely free to get in as a gift to the City - original from Warren Hellman and now from his heirs - no sponsors, no corporate signage just 6 stages of continuous well curated music for three days every October. The park roads close on the weekend for even more space for bikes and skaters. All this and much much more capped at the West End by Ocean Beach and the Pacific Ocean. SO fortunate to have this wonderful gem right here in the City.

Awesome park

By I95traveler2013 |

We went all over this park. The only downside is the cost of entering some sections. We paid for the Japanese Tea Garden but would have been better to have paid for the conservatory instead. The trail to the ocean was nice as were the windmills and gardens. Also the lake island.

Bigger than Central Park

By SFSIN5050 |

A loop around Golden Gate Park is over 7 miles. A loop around Central Park in NYC is about 6 miles. One of the few places in the city with free parking unless you park in the garage at the Science museum area. Great place to get a run in. Park at the end near Ocean beach and reward yourself after your run with a delicious meal or beer at the outdoor seating area in Park Chalet

Huge with nice spots around

By Alireza123 |

The park is very large, and it’s not easy to explore every corner on foot. It’s also possible to drive through parts of it. Entry is free, but some attractions—like the Botanical Garden—require a ticket.

There are several themed gardens, including a Japanese garden and others.

To be honest, it’s not the best park I’ve visited, and I wouldn’t compare it to Central Park in New York.

Huge green space

By AnjanManda |

Very huge urban park built on reclaimed sand dunes is home to ten lakes.park filled with gardens, flowers, huge trees, wildlife, play grounds and also has a museum.Beautiful place for city dwellers to relax and reconnect with nature.

Golden Gate Park - A Must See!

By Sonja P |

A wonderful urban space - second to Central Park NYC in area but miles ahead in beauty. The JFK Promenade is gorgeous. The Dahlia Garden - spectacular! There’s a free shuttle service that runs about every 20 mins and gives you a touch of adjoining Haight-Ashbury. You’ll be lucky to ride the ‘happy bus’ with SHEILA , a relief driver. Amazing personality. Loves people, loves her job. What a gem!! Events this weekend include concert headliners such as Kendrick Lamar and the annual AidsWalk. Other attractions - a Natural History museum, a conservatory and the deYong.

Bigger than Central Park NYC - so be prepared!

By Bucket List trip |

This was a great walk. I did the length of the park, including the Botanic Gardens ($9 entry), down to Ocean Beach and back up the other side of the park. Thank heavens it was a mildly cook day. This park is way bigger than I imagined. Great intertwining tracks, lakes & sports fields.

Phenomenal Place

By ElvisAndrus |

There is 10,000 reviews for a reason. In a city that seems to have neither front not back yards locals flock there on a daily basis. It is big, beautiful, bold and abundant. Just so much there. We stayed at an Airbnb a few minutes away from the east entrance and we could have spent entire vacation in the park and been happy. Well, that is maybe a bit of an exaggeration but not by a lot. My favourite section was the AIDS memorial grove but there is just so much and it feels beloved.

Fantastic Park

By Alberto K |

It´s a nice place to spend half a day; the botanical and Japanese Gardens are a must see. We Got early and found parking space on the inner streets and walked our way around

Fantastic

By delagioventu |

Incredible park which hosts Japanese Tea Garden and Botanical Garden, really very nice to walk around, but very big, so take your time,

Great park- national treasure

By Jillian H |

Very fun and accessible activity in SF. we had great weather and walked around a bit and went to the Japanese tea house. Some tips- we got dropped off at the visitors center which is on the far opposite end of some of the attractions like the tea house, conservatory, and botanical gardens. We walked almost the full length of the park and it is long! If you don’t want to walk too much then get dropped off at the eastern end of the park. Otherwise it was a great experience and gorgeous park

The park is bigger than Central Park, NYC

By Theron |

A huge park and you can spend the whole day over there. Few museums that can take you more than a half day to visit. You can run, you can play balls, you can walk, and picnic, do whatever you feel like to do (legally).

Long walk to the beach

By Martyherbs |

started in town at the entrance to the botanical garden, walked all the way through to the beach, nothing at the beach, no shops or vendors.
park lovely but cars being broken into all along the road so do not leave anything on show, we spotted people hiding in the hedge watching people parking.
$10 each to get into greenhouse and area for world park

Tranquil Morning at Golden Gate Park

By DesertTrips |

I recently visited Golden Gate Park in SF and it was truly beautiful We arrived in the morning and took a leisurely walk around the park. It's an amazing escape from the hustle and bustle of the city We heard about car break-ins so we parked our car on another side and were relieved to find it untouched when we returned Everything felt safe and secure and it was a great day overall I highly recommend visiting Golden Gate Park for a peaceful getaway from the city chaos It's truly an amazing place to explore

Perfect place to bike, hike, and/or viisit places

By uncvcutraveller |

Very relaxing place and would recommend if one wants to chill out. Visiting family and its their favorite place

Nice green

By tinkati |

Japanese Teagarden...Japanese green tea … Fortune cookies... Your future is inside:)
It's a great move out on a sunny day.

Amazing views

By Milan Gamiani |

You must go when there is no clouds or fog, but the views are amazing.
The place is well kept, the traffic getting there can be heavy but you should go accordingly.
Definitely a place every one visiting San Francisco should visit.
Recommend for sure, bring a light jacket

Very nice

By TooOldtoRun |

We visited Golden Gate Park. It is very large and beautiful place full of green trees and grass. It is a cool relaxing oasis in the heart of bustling San Francisco.

Love seeing the bison!!!

By Nikko4Me |

We made a brief stop during our tour around the area to see the bison and were able to see them from afar!

Vast park with a variety of things to see and do.

By Baljinder S |

A great way to while a few hours or a whole day, established gardens with mature trees and plenty of wildlife , for families activities from bike riding, mini golf and a serious 9 hole golf course too. Lots of meandering paths and picnic spots. There are many ingress/egress points for this park. We chose to spend some time in Haight Ashbury for lunch which was a short Uber ride away and went back for Golf in the afternoon. It's close to the pacific ocean and ocean beach so you are not short of things to do in a day.

Huge place to explore

By Karim Maarouf |

I spent a few hours on a bike exploring the park. There was so much going on. On that day I was also lucky there was a free classical music concert. There is the rose garden, the Japanese garden (with admission fee), the windmills, people having picnics and even rollerblading. Also so many trails to cycle along and view beautiful scenery. My favorite thing was at the western end of the park you see the ocean!

Spacious park full of attractions

By Simon K. Nutt |

This was a lovely park. There are loads of attractions within the park that are worth a visit. There are also lots of pretty streams and other water features. You could easily spend a few hours here.

Deftones/SOAD/Mars Volta at the park

By Michael U |

Although Polo Field at Golden Gate Park is typically a large soccer venue surrounded by a track it became home to 50,000 music fans on 8/17/24 when System of a Down, Deftones and Mars Volta took the stage.

More than spacious enough for the crowd, with easy in/out and bag checks, one could potentially complain about the early 10pm ending or 3+ hour merch lines but on the whole everything else was outstanding.

Kudos to the lights and mixing team for putting on a show that looked and sounded faultless despite this being the first show of its kind.

nice

By Peter H |

Great place to unwind, a trip to the Japanese gardens is a must .Lots of museums to visit we did not have the time

beautiful park

By Boo Jerry |

This park is huge! You could spend all day walking around it, it has everything you could think of in a park! We spent a few hours walking around in the sun and it was lovely, alot to see.

BEAUTIFUL!!

By BBR Shannon Management |

An outstanding park!! rated one of the best I've experienced!! In my top 3 with NYC- Central Park, Vancouver's - Stanley Park & now Golden gate park!! The only negative, the HOMELESS in the public bathrooms is intimidating and when you need to use a bathroom this takes away from the overall peaceful experience.

Gardens and recreational opportunities abound.

By luv4phood |

This is a huge park with a little bit of everything. There are opportunities for both free and paid recreation. We opted for just touring the park and taking in the free options like the windmills, tulip garden and bison paddock. However, one can easily spend the day visiting the San Francisco Botanical Garden and the Japanese Tea Garden for a fee.

Must see

By Tammy S |

We spent a half a day out here, visiting the Japanese Tea Garden, Botanical Gardens and many more sites. IT was a beautiful day.

went 3 times, and we would certainly come again

By miri s |

the park has so much to offer! we came 3 times and we only stayed 6 nights. enjoyed the botanical garden, the de young museum, the science museum, and the japanes tea garden

Huge park.

By Jota2015Ce |

Pleasant and huge park ideal for spending the day, playing sports, having a picnic, discovering its museums, visiting the memorials, walking through the gardens (don't miss the greenhouse, the botanical garden and the Japanese garden), greeting the bison... If you travel from east to west you end up in the sea.

Tea Garden at GGP

By Connie R |

My second visit to San Francisco was in September. The first time around I did not visit Golden Gate Park and wondered what I was missing. So this time I made it a point to carve out a couple of hours to explore the park. My favorite part was the Japanese Tea Garden. This won’t be everyone’s cup of tea ;) but I thoroughly enjoyed walking around the garden. I’ve been to Japan twice and this really had the feel of what I experienced in Japan. The manicured foliage and attention to nature made me feel like I was in Japan again. Everything was just really lovely. It was a lot of fun to look through the gift shop as well. There was a wide range of things for sale; something for everyone at all price ranges. My limited time did not allow me to participate in a tea ceremony, but maybe next time as I will definitely return.

Great visit

By Wendy F |

Great visit quick trip to San Francisco but a good experience plenty of things to do and enjoy the trip to Alcatraz, expensive but worth it

Last minute side trip

By Robert N |

Beautiful park, quiet, serene in the middle of a noisy, traffic congested area. Free parking's a bit difficult, but for a short period of time the garage is not bad.

Be careful here

By Powerball13 |

This is a beautiful park but very dangerous. San Francisco in general has a big problem with car vandalism, and this site is one of the main places where the thieves target their victims. I do not recommend to rent a car while visiting San Francisco if you do it please take everything with you, they will smash your windows. This just happened to me.

Great spot for relaxing nature visit

By Kaz K |

The park is huge! I only visited part of it at Stow Lake, Strawberry Hill, the rose garden, and a several meadows. Great walk and relaxing place to escape the crowd. You can see great sun set and a glimpse of golden date bridge.

Really beautiful

By Diego |

Beautiful, probably the most beautiful park ever seen so far; not only considering the USA.
Amazing variety and respect for nature to the maximum; really recommended

Beautiful Park

By 20Judith |

This huge park, a bus ride away from the centre of the a City has much to offer, not just the debYoung Museum and the Music Concourse, but access to the Botanical Gardens and the delightful Japanese Tea Gardens.

Large park with museums attached!

By Kerry L |

Beautiful park right in the city! We went on a Tuesday, which happens to be the free day for the conservatory of flowers and the deYoung art museum, so it was a perfect day. There are rolling lawns for picnics, benches galore and walking paths.

Looked Amazing from the Bus

By Fraser N |

We didn't hop off but passed through the park as part of the hop on hop off bus tour. Park is very large and looked well cared for. There are food options available and a ferris wheel too.

Japanese Gardens

By matt d |

We went specifically with the Japanese Gardens in mind and they were beautiful. But Golden Gate Park has much more to offer and really you need to spend at least a day there to fully appreciate what they have to offer.

Huge, Beautiful, and Relaxing

By surfercharlie |

Golden Gate Park has a lot to offer. First the park is huge - bigger than Central Park in New York. The park has several gardens that can be toured (for a fee). The Japanese Gardens are amazing, even though they were packed with people the day we visited. I wish there were a few more dining options, but the hot dogs from the hot dog stands fill the belly while enjoying the park.

Great park!

By Livia Chauar |

The Golden Gate Park is huge, and is a really nice place to walk around and explore. You can visit several places during your stay, such as the Academy of Sciences, De Young and the Japanese Tea Garden. I loved walking around it, and could spot some squirrels as well.

Very nice place to go to!

Lovely Park to spend a day in.

By Rachel & Andy |

Visited 12/06/2023.

Would recommend a nice walk around this park. There is definitely a lot to see with different buildings (including a huge museum) and sculptures dotted about, with fountains, and lots of colourful gardens in bloom too. The rose garden was particularly beautiful.
They even had the main road closed off with different play sections along it so you could indulge your inner child.

If you fancy a longer walk, you can take the paths all the way to Ocean Beach, which we did. It's a beautiful walk under lots of shady trees, and plenty more to see on the way!

We only knocked 1 starr off as it could do more with more water fountains around.

Glorious Park

By Ruhungrytientien |

This is a glorious park, situation northwest end of San Francisco. The entire Golden Gate park is larger than NYC Central Park. This park is home to California Academy of Sciences, Dee Young Art Museum, Japanese Tea Garden, Strybing Botanical Garden, Star Wheel, GGP Outdoor Theater and Giant Windmill … much more. The plenty things to do and park setting has large section of road closed for jogging, running, biking and scooter. The park’s center courtyards has three large water fountains and many people practice Tai aching Chuang, Kung fu and even some modern dancing. And the back drop on the southern side is the towering Sutro Tower (highest structure in city of San Francisco), This is great place for outdoor activities or just sit down and soak in sun, sights and sound.

Take bus 44, 5, 7 and N train to get here. This park is a must see, visit and do. It’s a glorious and amazing park.

Beautiful park....with vandalism nearby

By Seabiscuit47 |

Had a terrific and educational visit to the Conservatory of Flowers. It is a true jewel and refuge within the city. Unfortunately our car, which was parked next to the conservatory was vandalized. Police said it is a regular occurrence. Be forewarned.

Nice park

By Mel |

Nice park and a good place to hang out if you find yourself in SF on a sunny day! It can be fun to do a picnic or even go for a run

So much to see!

By Dr_Iris_B |

The name Golden Gate park might mislead as it is not really next to the Golden Gate Bridge....
There is so much to see and do at this park: the Japanese gardens, the science museum or simply enjoy this large magnificent park!

Beautiful and well-kept park

By olavito96 |

It's a park to visit in San Francisco, especially if the weather is good; It is very well maintained, with beautiful gardens and several attractions. If you like walking in the open air and beautiful views, enjoy!

Perfect gardens and museum

By barbarapV2536HU |

The Japanese garden and Botanical garden were a fabulous time. The flowers weren’t in full bloom but still was a perfect spring afternoon. The museum was an additional bonus.

Such beauty to behold...

By Brenda Anne F |

In May of this year my son and I walked from San Francisco City Hall to the Pacific ocean, but not before finding our way through Golden Gate Park. It was a peaceful wonder living alongside a bustling city and it was a joy to see and hear. I believe this is also where we came upon a Botanical Greenhouse of tropical plants and orchids - a must have experience for me. Check out Golden Gate Park - you will not regret it!

Full of Glorious Spaces

By Thomas V |

The park is huge and exquisitely designed, full of special spots each one unique. Come here for museums, culture, nature, design, outdoor fun. Do some research and find what interests you. A bit difficult on public transit, as you will do a lot of walking.

Awesome...SPEND ALL DAY THERE

By Gary S |

Loads to do. Botanical Garden, Japanese Garden, museums.....there is so much to see and it is all great. Plan AT LEAST 5 hours there (there are food places...so plan lunch there also).
If you come to SF and do NOT go to Golden Gate Park, you will HAVE TO COME BACK!

What a park

By julian070886 |

What a park.
There is barbecue, singing, dancing and much more.
In every part of the park you can discover something new.

A highlight of San Francisco.

"Free" tours

By matkat7 |

The San Francisco library offers a vast array of "free" tours. They ask for a $15 donation, but it's voluntary and it goes to pay the only 2 paid staff people. Volunteers offer all of the tours. The tour of the Golden Gate Park was very interesting and indeed, highlighted some features that probably most locals don't know about.

Smash and grab target

By jumpyg |

Visited the park in August 2020 on a Sunday morning. Lots of people around. Returned from the Japanese Tea Garden to find two windows on our rental van smashed and several backpacks stolen. My kids lost some irreplaceable mementos from our trip. All told, it cost us about $1,500 in lost items and repair costs and ruined our trip to San Francisco. This also caused us to miss our appointment to see Muir Woods. If you Google "San Francisco Smash and Grab" you'll see many stories about this problem. This once-beautiful city is being ruined by rampant crime. My kids never want to come back, and I don't blame them.

The best park in San Francisco

By La tua vacanza in Messico |

If you want to visit the city of San Francisco, the best way to visit a gold gate it’s a gold gate park, to take a good picture of the bridge and to relaxing

Lovely Park

By David0ff82 |

Myself and my partner were in San Francisco June 2024 to celebrate our 20th anniversary and we did so much exploring and had to come to Golden Gate Park. It is huge so we only manage to see a small part of it but it’s so lovely and well kept with lots of greenery including huge trees. It’s lovely to take a peaceful stroll though especially when the weather is good like what we had. Well worth a visit.

Gorgeous

By Freq_Traveler_01_13 |

A gorgeously designed park with so much to do in it. One tour guide talked about how some people compare it to Central Park, but in my mind there's no comparison. While this isn't anywhere near as large, there's much more to do and the weather is far more amiable. There's an authentic Japanese tea garden, some museums, and lovely running trails and such.

Amazin and beautiful Urban Park

By jcerto |

Golden Gate Park is a beautiful and complete urban park in the city of San Francisco, CA, located in an area close to the world famous gate of the same name, just separated by the Richmond neighborhood to the north. This Park is surrounded by the city and has an incredible green area that surrounds various equipment such as tennis courts, museums, polo field, football fields, trails, inner lake, picnic areas, etc. and is one of the most sought after places. for relaxation and the practice of sports by the local population. The Park has a total area of 4.12 km² with avenues crossing its areas, all surrounded by an enormous amount and variety of beautiful trees. As a curiosity, in the area next to the beach there is a place where a herd of American buffaloes live, since 1894! All in all, a great option for a city tour, and I recommend

Huge park with tons to see and do

By Reslimpan |

Huge park hosting the Japanese Tea Garden, de Young Museum, California Academy of Science and not to forget the Koret Children Quarter and Carousel for the little ones. Impossible to see everything on one day. This is a place you can keep coming back to time after time.

Talk about huge!

By Brad |

Talk about huge! We rode bikes through this huge park from top to bottom. It was a long, beautiful ride. It is full of so many great things to see.

Beautiful Park

Stayed here with my boyfriend and can’t recommend this place enough. The neighborhood is a bit sketchy but the hotel is secure, quiet and beautiful. Had dinner and drinks at their rooftop bar (Charmaine’s) and it was stunning. The lobby and rooms are stylish and comfy. The staff are friendly and helpful. Especially Diane, Russell and Herman! Will definitely be back.

One of America’s great city parks

By LoveToTraval |

Think Central Park on steroids. Golden Gate boasts an art museum, beautiful gardens, walking trails, a playground, and ferquent performances. The Japanese Tea Garden is delightful..

Must Visit

By Icarus4335 |

Huge park with tons of things to do and see. It stretches basically all the way to the coast and contains museums, lakes/ponds, at least one waterfall, a tea garden, and much more. There are tons of trails to walk and the park is kept in great condition. I would definitely recommend visiting if you are a first-timer to San Francisco. Just outside the park (to the south), there are plenty of shops and restaurants.

A beautiful walk

By Matt M |

Took the bus to Ocean Beach and then did the walk back through the park to Haight-Ashbury. Beautiful day with lots to see and do. Did not pay for any premium park experiences but just the walk was enough to appreciate the beauty of the place.

Worth seeing

By KM |

A great park, green as far as the eye can see, very well maintained, spacious. You can really spend the whole day here. The only downside is the entrance fee for the teahouse, the botanical garden and the greenhouse, $28.00 each, which is a bit rushed. But there is still a lot to see. There are even barbecue areas there, with everything you need. Just bring some coal and food and you're off, a beautiful little spot.

Great place for a picnic!

By Norell P |

We spent the day soaking up the history and local culture. If I had a complaint it's that I didn't pack something to snack on and enjoy the setting!

Delightful park with a range of attractions

By Ashfield531 |

February is not the best time of the year to visit this park, but it still provides a range of delightful walks.

There are interesting statues dotted around and a small lake. You can also pay to visit some of the other attractions including a Japanese garden, botanical garden and a flower conservatory.

All this and Kezar Stadium, too

By Taylor B |

Golden Gate Park is to San Francisco what Central Park is to New York City, Lincoln Park to Chicago, Griffith Park to Los Angeles and Forest Park to St. Louis. Located between Richmond and Sunset districts on the west side of the city, the 1,000-acre urban park was established in 1871 and is home to some of St. Francisco's most visited attractions, including the Conservatory of Flowers, De Young Museum, California Academy of Science, Japanese Tea Garden, San Francisco Botanical Garden, Rainbow Falls, Spreckles Lake, Blue Heron Lake, Strawberry Hill, Beach Chalet and -- would you believe? -- Kezar Stadium, home to the San Francisco 49ers of the NFL from 1946 to 1970. The park contains miles of green lawns, bridle paths, lakes and 9,000 kinds of plants. Also a 75-foot tall Dutch windmill, an archery field, a Music Concourse that was built in 1894 and a habitat for a herd of bison that has roamed the park since 1890. The Conservatory of Flowers, the oldest building in the park, has housed rare tropical flowers and plants from around the world since 1879. While its capacity has been reduced significantly, Kezar Stadium remains a multi-purpose facility that hosts college football games, soccer, lacrosse and track and field. For drinks, lunch or dinner, stop at Beach Chalet. At the Japanese Tea Garden, see the 1.5-ton Buddha. Meditate at the Golden Gate Bridge Pavilion, a Chinese temple-like structure that was a gift from the city of Taipei.

Make sure you have the CDW on your rental car if you park it in Golden Gate Park

By Jason F |

Same review as the previous person. This is an amazing place and the amazing thing about it was in only 15 minutes, in broad daylight on a relatively crowded strip someone smashed into the back window of our rental car and took my girlfriends purse containing her drivers license, green card and passport (no cash). I read online there are literally 2-3 break-ins *per day* in Golden Gate Park (and a huge, huge number across the city every day) . Sadly our two days in San Francisco were basically ruined by a 15 minute stop to Golden Gate Park.

Awesome park with so many things to see.

By mishrku |

Awesome park with so many things to see. It is almost impossible to cover everything in one day. We should spare 2-3 days easily to enjoy all the buildings or parks.

Avoid the Weekend

By KathieVee |

While nice due to a no car policy in a great many areas of the Park, it also is a Mecca for tourists on weekends, so if you want to avoid crowds, go during the week, when you can actual enjoy myriad experiences: tea in the Japanese Garden, a stroll through the Rose Garden, the beauty of the Arboretum and the butterfly garden inside, the great Redwood “garden”, a stroll around Stoll Lake, a run through the Park, or hiking trails through endlessly lovely little fern strewn, hidden flowered settings, or the latest at the De Young Museum. And so much more.

Beautiful park close to the bridge

By Cloud |

This is a beautiful small park located very close to the Golden Gate Bridge. As usual in the area, very well taken care of.

Day Trip to San Fran

By trinicutiejmc |

So much to enjoy! Even the Shakespeare Garden and Japanese Tea Garden was closed there was still alot to see and do. I visited the Botanic Garden and it was free for the day. It was AMAZING! I walked 9.6 miles this one day.

San Francisco

By JJWagga |

Site of old world war 2 airfield with some original buildings left where maintenance was undertaken it was stated many aircraft came in with significant damage etc bullet holes etc they were often repaired and returned to service within 24 to 48 hours....This area is also a great viewing point for photos etc of the golden gate bridge

Fabulous green place

By Marie V |

I visited the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco in May 2023. I visited the Park with some friends. The Golden Gate Park is a gorgeous place to visit. It's an absolute must-see and it's advisable to visit the Golden Gate Park if you're a plant lover as the Park has over 5000 species. Plan on spending a few hours there since the park is huge. I would recommend to take the bike rentals with children because it can be really exhausting trying to walk everything on foot. It was a nice place to take pictures with my friends and it's definitely worth the effort. It's just one of those things that you have to visit while visiting San Francisco. There's no need to bring a jacket as the Park has three inside museums. I would advise to wear a jacket when it's rainy or cold though because a large part of the Park is outside.

Huge Park for Fun

By Thomas V |

Designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, and it shows. He was the classic landscape architect of 19th Century America. This park is huge and full of all sorts of attractions and also the site of many major events. Come here and have fun.

Soooo much to do in 1 park!! Wow! ❤️ Expect traffic and queues for the Japanese tea garden.

By The_Concierge_8 |

Made our way through the park as part of our San Francisco city tour.
It's lovely to see locals truly enjoying their time outdoors and making use of this park!
It's a perfect blend of feeling like you're out in nature while enjoying human activities and having fun too!

Just be prepared for the traffic. Fridays to Sundays it can be overcrowded and pandemonium with parking both sides of the streets and the ensuing melée!

The Botanical gardens are in here, as well as the famously popular Japanese tea garden. The California Academy of Sciences is in here too.
There's also a polo field, lakes, a golf course, stadium, carousel and the De Young museum. On top of all the park areas and walking / running trails, you can spend a week here and not experience everything in this park. Great place to bring the whole family!

Check out the Japanese tea garden for their events online and be prepared at certain times for long queues.

Beautiful Japanese Tea Gardens

By AJP444222 |

As visitors, we paid $10 each entrance fee but passed a really pleasant hour here. We had actually got off here in the park as it was one of the stops on the Bug Bus tour. The gardens are quite small but very tranquil and picturesque and enjoyable to stroll around. We even tried a cup of Japanese tea, Glad we came and would recommend a visit

The Golden Gate Park is bigger than the Central Park in NYC.

By Vanessa P |

The Golden Gate Park is bigger than the Central Park in NYC. Almost impossible to be seen in one day. You can rent bikes in the Panhandle Park area. Also, there is a free shuttle from the Panhandle Park area that circles half of the park - up to the Botanical Gardens. Some paid buses also make the same route as the shuttle.
The lower part of the park ends at Ocean beach.

Always My Favorite

By Kittygal 🇺🇦 🌻 |

I fell in love with this park on a long ago visit as a teen. During grad school, I was lucky enough to live across the street and often escaped there to re charge.

Now when I visit the city, the park is always on my list of stops. I go early in the morning to savor the verdant lushness of the Botanical Garden, and to watch the city awaken to a new day.

There's so much to love about this place it would be impossible to write enough prose. I'll just say it's San Francisco's gem, and I'll keep on coming back to enjoy the many and unique offerings.

Golden gate park afternoon visit

By allan p |

The park is very large and scenic. Beautiful fields, trees, plants. Free shuttle to transport you from one end to the other with many sites in between. The Japanese Garden should not be missed. It's beautiful, tranquil... Haight /Ashbury tour led us thru parts of the park which was filled with locals walking their dogs, picnicking...

A Beautiful Area

By Lora H |

Definitely worth checking out. There is something for everyone here. The tea room is a must. Huge area with lots to do.

Beautiful Park!

By donna b |

We saw this park when we went by on the city tour bus and then went back because it looked so beautiful. We walked around the park, but you can also hire bikes. Lovely if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city!

Nice morning

By litmanen16 |

There is sooo much to see and do in SF, but getting away from it all for a few hours on a friday morning was a great idea for us. The tea rooms were very nice and reasonably priced. The walk was lovely. Worth it if you have a couple of hours - no more than 2hrs.

Beautiful!

By Toria ⭐️ |

Stunning park. Its a really nice place to spend the afternoon. JFK is car free at the moment so also a really nice place to cycle.

Stay All Day!

By JENNY |

I love to meet a friend in front of the ROSE GARDEN.
What a photo op! This is a world class park so don’t be in a hurry; pack a lunch and wear layers especially in the Summer when you might expect and not get warm temps! Visit the DE YOUNG MUSEUM and THE JAPANESE TEA GARDEN! Wear comfortable shoes and walk the length of this fabulous park right down to the Pacific Ocean! Wear a hat besides a baseball and show that you are ready for anything!

A Must See

By BlueTravels |

Fabulous urban with lots of museums, gardens, and other attractions. You could focus a long weekend trip just in the park and not run out of the things to do.

People always want to know... is it safe, particularly after dark. Yes, absolutely, if you stay on main roads. After dark in the winter you'll see plenty of commuters on foot, bike, and scooter on the main roads like JFK Drive (which is closed to cars) and lots of folks along the music concourse.

There are even things to see after dark in the winter. "Winter Lights" runs until 10 pm December through February. The Sky Star Wheel and the bandshell are just two things that are lit up gloriously.

I would not, however, wander onto the smaller dirt footpaths after dark. It probably isn't 'dangerous' but you could encounter some 'unsavory characters."

A Great Place To Find Tranquility

By The Tit: The Truth In Travel |

I come here to think and write. It's a great place to lose yourself. The botanical gardens are very interesting if you like plants. It's all free.

huge park

By Alejandro0203 |

We were walking around this park a little after going to the Academy of Sciences.
It is extremely large and there is a free bus that drops you off in different parts of the park. Impossible to explore it on foot, perhaps by bicycle or some other means.
There is also a Japanese and botanical garden but you must pay an entrance fee.

Gorgeous Park must visit

By I3370HZsarahc |

Absolutely gorgeous park with so many things to do. This place is bigger than NY Cebtral Park and I think way more beautiful. The Japanese Gardens and Conservatory of Flowers are to die for

Super nice

By Slick |

Spent a good portion of the day here and were not disappointed. Large area to explore. Close to a lot of other activity and places to visit.

Get a museum pass!

By HenryW |

We thoroughly enjoyed the Japanese Garden and teahouse. Also the conservatory. When we found out that the Academy of Science was $40 per person for seniors, we balked. When we return, we will get a museum pass and visit three or more to make it worthwhile.

Huge city park

By Heathery |

We spent a lot more time here than I thought we would. Sadly, the Japanese gardens were closed off, but there was still so much ground to cover.

A Nice Park

By GixxerWoody |

Not much to say but that its clean and nice with a big area to walk around and sightsee. Worth stopping off to see

So much to see, so little time

By AN6pack |

Thankfully we had a car because seeing everything here or trying to walk it would be next to impossible. A bike would have been handy.
What a beautiful place right in the middle of the city! wow
some truly breathtaking sights. First Tuesday of the month was a great day as many of the museums were free.

There are so many parts of the park to see!

By crunch6 |

Make sure you stop by the Nature Conservancy while you are at Golden Gate Park. This is a beautiful park with so many attractions and places to walk.

A Day in Golden Gate Park

By KatyD12345 |

Golden Gate Park was an excellent alternative from visiting the Golden Gate Bridge. I love, this park! It reminded me of Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC. There was so much to do here. There are several gardens that you can visit as well as a museum. There’s tennis courts and soccer fields, a Dutch windmill and an exit/entrance directly across from the beach. This is an excellent place for any type of traveler - solo, group, kids, etc. I spent 3-4 hours here, but it could certainly be a full day excursion.

Stunning landscape and park

By EleanorWarren85 |

If you love landscaping, you're gonna have a great time a the Golde Gate Park for sure! I loved how well maintained the place is, looking sharp. It's actually peaceful just to look at.

chill

By Rachel W |

Really cool park. Very chill place in a big city. We especially enjoyed the children's playground and Japanese gardens.

Sunday’s are very busy

By Margaret O |

The gardens have amazing specimens and history. Japanese Tea Garden was hyper maintained. If I had the time, I would have stayed all day.

Tulips Bison Windmills Golf course all in one location!

By nancy K |

entering GG Park from Ocean Blvd (JFK) Drive the first thing you see are giant Dutch windmills and lovely gardens of tulips a spectacular array of colors 1/4 mile ahead are 1000 pound buffalos/bison/

Great space

By Gardengel-IoW |

Loved this space with all its offerings museums, gardens withing a garden, ponds and lots of open space on the edge of the city.
We parked at the Ocean end for free roadside, near one of the windmills, got there fairly early I suppose. Definately got busier as day went on. We got the free shuttle from there to the other end of park, it runs about every 15 minutes

A pleasant surprise. Love the park

By YRtravels |

The park is really nice. To park in The garage go early. There is a lot to do there with the Japanese gardens, bike and Segway rides, a museum, the park of course and restaurants nearby.

Great picnic spot

By Kelly |

This was a nice spot to stop by for a stroll, picnic and relax. The gardens and trails are well kept and maintained.

Beautiful views everywhere you look!

By Monica M |

Amazing tall trees, fresh breeze and luscious green areas for kids to run and families to do a barbecue. There is japanese garden and entrance fee is $12 per adult and $7 children 5-11, toddlers are free. There are other places to see throughout the park and you probably won't be able to see all of it in one day. Renting a bike helps to get around.

The park is great

By Marcela Bini |

This park is so beautiful! In the summer, its always busy and it is a perfect spot to everyone, all kinds of people. Must do.

World class City Park

By Scott |

Obviously a world class City park. Multiple venues from grassy fields to tennis courts. There's a world-class science museum, art museum, and even a Japanese tea garden. Fantastic place for bicycling or walking.

Golden Gate Gardens

By marriott946 |

A great place to visit.

The Japanese gardens are lovely.

A Scottish landscaper whose house (now park offices) is still there to see.

An observation tower to oversee all the gardens. The park is bigger than Central Park in New York.

Given the opportunity do visit.

Don't visit SF without going here

By MaiaTheTraveler |

This is a beautiful place with a wild range of things to see and do, from a lake where you can paddleboat around through gaggles of ducks, to a first-class art museum (The De Young). There's also a science museum that has/had a live alligator -- at least the last time I went. Also has a "living roof" (!?)

There's also a Japanese Tea Garden and an extraordinary arboretum which has plants native to regions all over the world. There, there are all sorts of shady or sunny (according to your preferences) spots to stroll, or sit and read. Or just be.

As of 8.27.2022, part of the main road through the park is closed to traffic -- reserved for cyclists, roller skaters and peds. This may or may not last, as there's controversy about the limitations for people who'd like to DRIVE through the entire park.

Beautiful park

By kathy4117 |

The park is huge. It's so well maintained and just beautiful. So many different areas to see. We took quite a few pictures, many different birds than what we see on the east coast.

Beautiful Park!

By cynthia m |

We rented bikes to explore the park and had a wonderful time! There are many little parks within the big park and many places to find nature and peace.

Bigger than Central Park NYC

By Traveleator |

The park is huge! It has many smaller gardens and attractions within. We had a toddler so we visited the Koret Playground and the Academy of Sciences which is wonderful for kids. We were there beyond the traditional summer holidays (mid Sept) but they did have a concert and a play in the park on a Sunday afternoon. Would take the whole day to do proper justice to the park. At the eastern end you can enjoy the beach.

Japanese tea garden

By warden535 |

We went to Golden gate park in the rain. There is lots of places you can visit in the park but you have to pay to go into the different buildings. We paid 10$ each to go into the Japanese tea garden then paid for our tea but to me it was worth it. Not only sitting watching the rain and drinking tea but walking around the garden was beautiful and very relaxing after spending days in the city.

One of America’s Great Urban Parks

By Dan W |

Although it’s very different than typical city parks such as Central Park, Chicago’s Lincoln Park or Denver’s City Park, GG Park packs a great number and variety of attractions in its environs. Go for nature, special gardens, art. the conservatory or a concert. Go for hiking, biking, or roller skating. Just go and enjoy this outdoor paradise. It’s easy to teach on public transportation too.

botanical garden

if you ate in sf and not visiting golden gate park half of your life is vested the best area that you can spent time in other musicale event Japaneses tea garden botanical garden flowers , science or art museum that they are all peace of art

Lovely way to spend an afternoon

By pkh213 |

Spent the afternoon at the Japanese Tea Garden and the Botanical Garden across the street. The redwood trees in the park are beautiful. Enjoyed all of the art installations while walking, and there are a number of food trucks if you are hungry. Also toured the Conservatory.

Must see while in San Francisco

By DrKatieRN |

This is a must see went in San Francisco. Friends drove us around Golden Gate Park. Stopping at different vistas for photos.

Blast in the park

By Vickie K |

Needed more time to spend in this park. There is some much to do there. With all the grassy areas it would be a wonderful place to bring the family and have a picnic. The history and statues all around the park are awesome. I really enjoyed relaxing people watching. When we were there they had a ton of food trucks which was cool.

Plan on spending several hours there. Enjoy and relax.

San Francisco is a rose and it has thorns!

By NME |

Best part of SF is that most GO-TOs & MUST SEEs are free. Golden Gate Park is free! You can ride your bike. You can take a picnic in the multiple open fields. Go for a walk. Check out some of the gardens (some with admission). The Park is right off of the avenues with tons of local eateries within walking distance. Quite a few boutique shopping spots as well. I take all my out of towners to the Park! It’s a jewel in the middle of the city. It’s our Central Park. Having said that, I have to be honest with ALL travelers. San Francisco is a Rose.....with thorns. San Fran is a property crime haven! Tourists’ cars are targeted heavily. Leave ALL valuables at your hotel or Airbnb!!!!!!!! Leave absolutely nothing in your car! Watch your valuables at all times. We also have a homeless issue but for the most part, other than being grossed out by public urination and defecation, it shouldn’t ruin your trip. SF is a beautiful rose with thorns.

Lovely park

By Sarah W |

We visited the de Young Museum and enjoyed it. We decided to walk to the Buffalo Paddock, knowing it would take us a while (about 45 minutes) and were disappointed the bison were not actually grazing that day.

Beautiful

By Dan K |

Smell the Eucalyptus! See the Bison! So much to explore on foot or bicycle in this Paradise but be very careful when parking your (rental) car,,,smash and grab theft is common now, sadly, so leave NOTHING,I mean not even a pencil in your car, not even in the trunk! Don't be scared, but be smart.

Golden Gate Park

By DavSter |

It was nice to see the park, but it is nothing special...overall there are 4 places located in park that you should visit. We were told that we will spend 2 hours maximum to see entire park, but ended the walk after more than 4 hours, exhausted, thirsty and there was no place where you could by some drinks, and we even were not able to explore all the good sights.. We have visited Conservatory of Flowers and we loved it! De young museum & Japanese Tea Garden are amazing, definitely we did not regret visiting. California Academy of sciences is so much fun, we went on night tour the next day and it was great experience, so many young people just hanging through the museum. Stow lake and Huntington Falls will for sure be something to experience on our next visit to SF.

Fantastic place, just don't park there.

By Orion47 |

Strolled through the botanical garden (check for free admission days). Ate lunch at the Japanese Garden. Beautiful...and amazing, too much to see in a single day.

Tip: don't park your car there.
Out-of-state license plates and/or rental car tags work as neon "break-in" signs.

When we were there, along MLK drive, many cars had there windows busted in and property stolen. Apparently, on a regular basis, gangs drive thru, with amazing speed, smashing and grabbing as they go.
Note: doesn't matter if nothing is visible, they bust the window and access the truck thru the back seat.
Police were helpful after the fact, but prevention of this sort of crime appears not to be a high priority for the city.
So, by all means, visit the park. Just don't park your car there....

Get a bike and enjoy

By albertamara |

So nice to bike through, enjoy the views, good air and park sights. It‘s large, 2 hours will be needed.

We were so happy
we came it was wonderful!

Fun Repeat Trip to Golden Gate Park, San Francisco

By mini |

We have been to Golden Gate Park a number of times. This time we went on a sunny February day midweek (Thursday). We had a nice lunch at the cafe at the de Young museum.

We paid for admission to the Japanese Gardens. We had hot green tea at the cafe there.

We wandered the area and enjoyed. We liked seeing the various statues.

We then went to the Conservatory of Flowers.

We had a good repeat visit to Golden Gate Park, which is larger than New York's central park.

Do not come to SF for vacaciones

By siyomusic |

I come to SF with my husband and one year old daughter and we did not feel safe at all. The City is full of homeless and crazy people, they are everywhere.
I did not find Parks very well maintained. We decided to reduce out stay and left SF. I would not recommed SF at all.

Go on.

By deux4six |

The city’s largest park is more than six kilometres long and 800 metres wide and is therefore much larger than New York’s famous Central Park. Located between the hippie Haight Asbury district in the north and the ocean in the south, it is full of must-see places like the DeYoung Museum, the Academy of Sciences, the fabulous Japanese gardens and even Dutch mills in the south. A free shuttle bus takes you between the different sites sometimes quite distant from each other. Several MUNI bus lines serve the main entrances. Choose the one located at the corner of Fulton and 10th that leads to the DeYoung and the Academy of Sciences. One of the best spots in the city

The fame of the city !

By kamakshi2015 |

Coming to San Francisco and visiting this famous landmark is an experience which is nostalgic . I vast open park with the natural and beautiful landscape is a treat . A walkers paradise for a memorable time with the families can be a treat. The good weather adds to it . Easily accessible and popular it is one attraction not to be missed .m

If you have 1 day, skip the bison end

By Northwindblows |

While I'm sure the Dutch windmill on that end is amazing in bloom, we only made it to the bison and had to come back the next day to explore the other end. There were only 6 bison and it wasn't very impressive. The conservatory of flowers and gardens on the other end of park were spectacular. The park was huge and glad we had 2 days to explore. There were signs we saw for free shuttles in the park on Saturday and Sundays. That would help a lot if you don't have time to walk from one end to the other.

Tranquil park

By creativestartravel |

The Golden Gate Park is home to the world-renown California Academy of Sciences, the tranquil Japanese Tea Gardens, and the oldest glass and wood Victorian greenhouse in the western hemisphere, where more than 800 live butterflies flitter around you as you stroll through the home of over 10,000 plants from around the world.

Japanese Tea garden

By Adar Loberant |

As I expected from a Japanese garden, I was slightly disappointed from the garden itself, that did not look as trimmed or looked after like traditional Japanese gardens.

We did enjoy the little café on the premesis.

Something for Everybody

By pfefmeister |

One of the best urban parks in the country. Nice paved walkways make it easy to get around and put in the miles. Wonderful vegetation, lakes, a rushing stream, fly casting pools, boat rentals, tennis courts, tea garden, and a couple of museums. Like I said, something for everyone. We like to visit and take long walks, discovering something new every time. Check it out.

Rental Cars

By Tonya B |

Be aware if you have a rental car you will be broke into. Was broke into at 1pm in a crowded area. Rental car company said we were the 5th today. Look up the news reports before you visit.

Must be beautiful when it bloom

By advcards |

Take the free shuttle around the park gives you a good view of what’s in it helps you plan where you want to get off. Plenty of green space and quite a few attractions to choose from attractions are a little on the Spendy side.

Free tram to get around the park

By DiverM |

We enjoyed the park which was intended to be along the line of Central Park. There is a free tram to get around the park which is quite large. We rented a bike initially for $30 but wish we knew about the free shuttle first. There is a Whole Foods just outside the park as one option for food. There is a lot to see and do in the park. Some of the gardens have a $13 fee.

Relax and enjoy nature

By Tom VL |

Wow, what a beautiful place to enjoy and visit. I crossed it by bike as it is pretty big 😉. I absolutely liked the area of strawberry hill. You continue west and end up at the Pacific Ocean. Amazing!

Really worth a visit

By Skye2903 |

Fantastic park to visit with museums, galleries and the superb Japanese tea garden. Spent all day roaming the park and never got bored.

Tons of Things to See and Do

By GPBurdell67 |

This 1,000+ acre park was once mostly sand dunes, so the transformation to the current pastoral oasis in the middle of a very densely developed city is remarkable. Don't miss it.

Stunning place

By Indiamegg |

I need to come back to visit the Japanese tea garden and the Botanic Gardens. But the park itself is stunning and the California Academy of Sciences is right there too.

Wonderful park in the middle of the city

By Brandon K |

This place is a nice island of quiet and greenery in the middle of the busy city. The museum, zen/tea garden, overall park - it just all works well together. Personally, I like the zen tea garden the best and could just come here over and over again for that alone.

San Francisco/Oakland trip

By sfrederickCRIA |

Huge park with a lot a history stop to see in it. Got to see the old Keezar Stadium, or what's left of it, where the 49ers once played. Also where Dirty Harry filmed a few scenes. there's even a bison ranch in the middle of this park.

Large City Park; Expensive to drive to

By C K |

Golden Gate Park is a large city park with many open spaces. It was the end of winter on a cold and dreary day with not much in bloom. Other than the size, it seemed like a standard city park. We came early, expecting to be able to park on the road, but all the spots were taken. Parking was $12/hour at the underground lot.

Beautiful

By moorthyr |

Great park... beautiful and lots to do. Botanical Gardens, California Academy of Sciences, De Young Museum, and more. And a short walk out of there to Haight Ashbury and a few other neighborhoods.

We took the bus there from Fisherman’s Wharf. Very convenient.

The Golden Gate Park 🏞️ is in San Francisco, CA.
It's unbelievable to visit a place with a completely different view than too in such a huge city.
A must-visit place for anyone wanting to explore nature without having to go any further.
Cycling in the park is highly recommended: )

Beautiful

By MandyMC |

The gardens were beautiful. We didn’t have a lot of ti e so could not explore as mulch as we wanted to.

We were disappointed

By JohnPaul78 |

Went here but was disappointed that you had to pay an admission charge for each attraction which would have made it expensive.

Gardens are well kept though but we were not willing to pay separately to go into the Japanese Garden and then Conservatory

So beautiful!!

By Pattpro |

You need at least two days to visit the entire park it’s so huge. One gun thing is to rent a bike to get end to end. Be sure you get a bike you can lock so when you get to the beach you can walk around a bit.

Beware

My vehicle window was busted out while walking the trails. I was gone for about 1.5 hours. My belongings were stolen from my car. Apparently, unbeknownst to me, this is normal. Do not leave anything in your vehicle. I mean anything. And prepare that your window may get broken out.

A lovely park and a must visit place in SFO

By NeilandBarbara |

We walked downhill from the top of Twin Peaks to the eastern end of the park and walked all the way through to the western beach end. We must have walked 8 miles in all. The park is 3.5 miles long, but the end to end walk is much longer as the paths are windy. Lots to see as you stroll through including the Bison enclosure, Japanese Garden (entrance fee), windmills, botanical garden, conservatory (entrance fee), dahlia garden etc.

Nice option

By RonanD_BR |

The Golden Gate Park is a good option to spend a Sunday morning walking and resting. Very good for runners and bikers too. If you are a tourist there are attractions such as the Botanical Garden, Japanese Tea Garden, the Young Museum and the Flower Conservatory that are all at walking distance and can be visited in the same day.

Relaxing walk at the Japanese tea Garden

By Irina German |

The Japanese garden is a real gem inside Golden Gate Park. The environment is very calm and relaxing and the little kiosk inside allows you to immerse yourself in nature in front of a nice tea or ice cream. Worth going for a walk if you have some spear time.

Fantastic Park to Visit

By Kazarooni |

This park is on the big side. We tried to see as much as we could but time was not on our side. It is very interesting, such contrast and wonderful sights. I would definitely go back there again if I am fortunate enough to ever get back to San Francisco from Australia. I would love have to been able to visit the galleries and the Japanese gardens. Hopefully my photos may give you some inspiration to visit.

A "Must Do" !

By sonderlufte |

Don"t miss the California Science Museum and the Japanese Tea Garden within the park. Both are exceptional.

Pretty but terrible signing to find your way around....

By UcellaBella |

We enjoyed our time here. Visited the de Young Museum which was very nice. The line was too long for us to go to the Japanese Tea Garden this time (we were there on Sunday.... will try again on another visit). Enjoyed the Golden Gate Park Band at the Bandstand. Did not enjoy the skate boarders who were using the road and sidewalk to practice their tricks (there were too many people and children walking around for this).

Lovely

By DipuKV |

Golden Gate Park is huge! A lovely place to traipse around, take in the beauty of the place & gather a collection of views / clicks.

BEAUTIFUL BUT DANGEROUS

By Miles Archer |

I certainly enjoyed the gardens. Very beautiful. But I didn't stay long because of the car break-in problem. I had a rental car. When I parked it, I left the glove box and center console open, to show that there was nothing of value in there. Nothing of value in the trunk either.

Enjoy but beware.

Amazing place

By monoshire |

China Tea Gardens a must, You'll not get all around the park in one day, absolutely massive.. The botanical gardens are a must!

Take a tour and learn the history!

By Jennifer R |

We took a City Guides tour and learned about the creation and building of the park. Fun and informative!

Charging how much for gardens??

By John T |

Used the big bus tour, stopped off at the gardens. Used to the UK, where “national parks” you pay for parking typically but that’s it. Charging for basically every specific area feels like an absolute ripoff - $30 for two people to walk around the Japanese gardens, are you having a laugh? Had a walk around stow lake, that was pretty (and free) so avoided a 1 star review. But I just can’t believe the temerity of charging so much if I’m honest

Many Different Attractions

By Jocelyn Sun |

There were a lot of different things that we could visit during the time there. For example, there were incredible museums, structures, and things you wouldn't see at a normal park! I had a lot of fun there.

Stunning place for a stroll

By brainy_banana |

We needed a bit of greenery and space after a few jam packed days of sightseeing and this was just the place to unwind.
Loads of green space, places to sit and enjoy the sun.

Spectacular site

By Charles C |

Magnificent views of the Pacific coastline and lots of things to do and see for the whole family. From concerts to picnics with breathtaking forestry, this park has it all.

Another Fun Day in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA

By mini |

We have been to Golden Gate Park a number of times. This time we took a walk, visited the AIDS Memorial Grove, and just spent some time in the grassy areas of the park.

Nice park feels smaller than it is

By PhilipL4 |

I can’t help compare this to Central Park. Similar size. This one feels smaller for some reason. Also feels more forced. There are a lot of roads running through it and around it and it is noisy. Many attractions cost money. Japanese Tea Garden is now $10 in the off season. Disappointed in the pagoda there. Seems they could have done a better job maintaining it instead of asking for donations to restore it. Rest of the park is a nice walk but I’m not sure it’s worth a special trip. Can stop in Haight-Ashbury when you are done.

Immense and beautiful

By Patricia_Trevizani |

The park is beautiful, huge and very well organized. You can take a free shuttle to get around inside, even so we stayed for a few hours and didn't see many parts that we would have liked, but unfortunately our time was short.
If you have extra days, I recommend setting aside a full day to enjoy the space.

Great daytime fun!

By Kim |

Great fun and a must see when visiting San Francisco. There are so many things to do from museums, to botanical gardens, and more. We started off our day early and grabbed some breakfast at one of the shops that line the edge of the park. Great atmosphere and good food too!

North cal trip

By Julio C |

Lots to see, such a beautiful park, botanical gardens, academy of science, lots of attractions for all the family and trails to run and walk.

THE JAPANESE GARDENS ARE AN ABSOLUTE MUST VISIT

By Andrea |

I just adored my visit to the Japanese gardens which captured the real gardens of Japan in every aspect, it was a very calming & zen experience

Great

By Lance F |

I enjoy walking my dog in the park regularly and recommend it for tourists when the weather is nice out. There are so many parts to the park, i.e. the Rose Garden, Hero's Grove, the Ferris Wheel, The DeYoung Museum, etc. You could spend all day in the park.

Be aware that you shouldn't bring anything of value and leave in your car. I recommend parking in the museum garage or along Lincoln Avenue as it is busy.

A walk through artistic SF

By aandrade |

Huge and beautiful park that competes without any problem with Central Park in NY, in size and attractiveness. It has two interesting museums, a Japanese garden which is my favorite and lots of space to explore.

Super Recommended

By Minca Experiences |

Beautiful park, very large place, very safe, the greenhouse, carousel for everyone, trail, nature, bridges, museum and much more is a spectacle! I liked it a lot!

Unfortunately not so sure anymore!

By angelDeutschland |

Beautiful green oasis in the middle of San Francisco! But you have to be careful here, because due to the current situation (shop closures, unemployment, homelessness and crime) you have to expect that your car will be broken into and emptied. So always keep an eye on everything!!

Deceptively large- spend some serious time here

By DG |

As per my review title it’s deceptively large with a wide range of things to view and take in. Maybe jog round it or walk casually and take in the sights and sounds!!
Beautiful.

Great botanical sight

By Coriander W |

Nice pathways for walking or jogging. Beautiful flowers and fauna. Peaceful area to have a picnic or walk your dog

Park with attractions

By FS11F |

Huge park next to the city, with diverse cultural, artistic and natural attractions. It's worth walking a lot around the place. Some places are paid, like the Japanese garden.

Views of the Golden Gate Bridge

By KissXX |

We saw the Golden Gate Bridge from the Alcatraz Tour, Pier 39, the Welcome Center Area, On the Bridge!, Grand View Park, Baker's Beach via a wine tour, and Golden Gate Park. A year ago we saw if from Crissy Field and Grand View Park. There are many, many places to see the Golden Gate Bridge, but wherever you choose give the fog (Karl) a chance to move. You will see majestic and beautiful views as the fog moves in and out and about.

Great place to escape the crowds!

By MarCat11 |

Beautiful gardens to explore. Japanese Gardens were really nice and The waterfalls were a nice walk. Didn’t get a chance to go into the museum but it looked like it would have been interesting. Will have to plan more time next visit.

Golden Gate Park visit

By Frances M |

We were lucky enough to join the free tour thru the Japanese Tea Harden offered by the park volunteers. Our guide, Hope’s presentation was thought provoking describing the Japanese family devoted to caring for the garden. We so enjoyed her description of the garden’s history.

Wonderful place

By Sarah S |

We were really impressed with GG Park - one of our favourite spot in SF.
Loved the Japanese Tea Garden - really beautiful spot and great for a tea and snack.
Also visited the Botanical Gardens (really nice), the windmill and bison field. Highly recommended. Free parking too.

Once you find parking...

By phyrman21 |

It’s a cool place to see. Nice views of the bridge and city on a clear day. Many activities surround the area too. Parking was a challenge.

Second Best Japanese Garden in the Country!

By FNet0 |

Fabulous park even if did not comport the second best Japanese Garden in the country. Fabulous landscape work! Totally worth the trip, admission price and wait.

Clean

By Ashley E |

Lovely park with Japanese tea gardens you pay a charge to enter .
Very big and clean .
Lovely place to go on a warm day
Loads of interesting statues through out.
There’s the botanical gardens we didn’t go in here but heard it’s worth a visit .
The nicer side of San Fran.

Big Expanse of Recreation

By Thomas V |

So many things to do in this great resource. You have the Japanese Tea Garden, the big expanses where there are concerts, the windmills, the bison, and my favorite, the rhododendrons during the special time of the year. But the landscaping is great, so there is a lot of nature to explore. It's a huge expanse and can be cold and foggy.

Amazing Science Museum!

By jennaphant |

Best science museum we've been to. Give yourself about three hours to see the aquarium, rainforest, africa exhibit and planetarium

Unmissable

By Valeria D |

The whole Golden Gate area is beautiful! And the Palace of Fine Arts, a beauty! Recommended 100% to visit the island of Alcatraz and Sausalito

Lovely

By markandsian |

This was a huge park. Wonderful music park with a plateau for shows. Lots of eating/toilet facilities around with walks between specific areas. We visited on a Sunday and there was a roller dance off taking place where people congregated with in-line skates or roller skates and danced(!) along to 80s music blaring from a ghetto blaster. Great atmosphere. The only downside was that they charged for entry to the Japanese Flower Garden and the Botanical Garden.

Walk the Park - from Flowers to the Beach

By wendy L |

What started as a visit to the Conservatory of Flowers, turned into a 3 1/2 mile walk directly through the park and all the way to the beach and the water's edge. Along the way we stopped for some photos, and took a breather or two, but the goal was to do the complete walk, take in what sights we could along the way, and enjoy the afternoon. By doing this, we were able to see the changing environment along the way, from the flora ( unique trees and flowers) and fauna (various birds, bison and a raccoon) to the ferris wheel, Japanese tea gardens, sports fields, museum campus, green waterfall, stables, windmill and finally the huge windswept beach. It was a great way to get a feeling for what was in the area, and make plans to do something specific in the future. Fortunately, the walk was an easy one, no steep hills, and there was an outdoor rest room facility about midway through the walk.

Beautiful park

By tintinfan2013 |

Beautiful park that is worth visiting for the many attractions. Loved the tree ferns near the Lily Pond, the glass house and the gardens in front of the de Young museum.

Nice park for various outdoor activities

By Yongki |

The Golden Gate park for San Francisco is like the Central Park for New York city. Besides serving as city lungs, it also provides a place the surrounding residents to do various outdoor activities safely in a refreshing atmosphere. It is also a nice place to stroll around and enjoy the various gardens in there.

Probably the most underrated city park in America

By Dan Theman |

When you hear the discussion for best city parks, Central Park is going to be up there. Not even up there, AT THE TOP. No park is more famous than Central Park. And Central Park deserves all the superlatives. I'm not going to make this Central Park vs Golden Gate Park review. However, the point I wan to make is that I think GGP is somewhat of a huge hidden gem when it comes to city parks in the country. Looking at the reviews, you may think otherwise but most people who come to San Francisco don't have GGP on their mind.

To me, GGP is my FAVORITE city park in the whole country. Its MASSIVE and has so much going on. There's museums, art sculptures, a Bison farm (YES) a gigantic Dutch Wind Mill that's right on the beach that's connected to the park. Acres and acres of open fields and green space. Running trails, boat paddling, you name it, you can do it and they it there.

Its truly a gem of a park in the whole United States I think. If you love city parks and you're in San Francisco, you owe it to yourself to visit this park. Its a park you can visit any time of the year, there's always something great going on. And oh yeah, ITS MASSIVE.

Other notes: Like many other parks, you can ride a bike or a segway. And since its a MASSIVE park, there's a little bus that picks you up and drops you off at areas of the park,

Awesome, large park

By Sergei PT |

Lots to do in the Golden Gate Park, right next to the Golden Gate Bridge and options of restaurants and shops.
You can choose to go to the Science Museum, the Botanical Garden, Japanese Garden, among others. Really nice place.
Good parking, inside or outside.

Golden gate park Segway tour

By Kristen B |

This tour was awesome! Love every second of it! Devin was our tour guide and he was fantastic! Great experience with two teenage boys who think everything is boring😂

Beautiful Area

By Jane N |

Lots of areas to explore. Loved the Japanese Tea Garden. Could spend a couple days exploring this area if you love plants and gardening

Super nice park!! Japanese tea garden is a MUST!!

By Julia H |

This park is definitely gorgeous! It’s well kept, the grass is nice and the flowers and plants are beautiful. There is a bus that goes straight into the park so it’s easy to get in and out. It wasn’t too crowded at all when we went. We realized that there was three main attractions in the park, a greenhouse of some sort, a science centre/museum, and the Japanese tea garden. I’m going to do a separate review if the tea garden because it was magnificent oh my god!! You could buy a pass that allowed entry into all three attractions, or buy a single pass for each of the ones you wanted to do. We payed around 37$ each for the science centre and it honestly wasn’t really worth it, it’s definitely meant for kids and we overall regretted visiting that. All in all, the park was run super efficiently and the Japanese tea garden was just breath taking, I would go there everyday if I could. It also had an admission fee of around 25$ I believe.

So much to see! So much to do!

By RHS1946 |

My daughter, son-in-law and I visited the Park to see The Japanese Tea Garden but also took our lunch and enjoyed the peaceful surroundings near one entrance. Bicycles were available to rent but we chose to walk after parking near the Japanese Tea Garden area. The grounds are fabulous and we only saw one part. My daughter and I entered the Tea Garden and enjoyed the serenity and the exquisite plantings and beautiful statuary and paths. There is a Tea House but we had just finished lunch so did not visit it. However, we did find some nice things in the gift shop. It was well worth the $10 entrance fee ($7 for seniors). My son-in-law chose to visit the de Young Museum instead and we met him there. A special exhibit of Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black power was drawing many visitors. The gift shop there was very nice with a range of children's items, books, pottery, clothing, jewelry, art. Both places are well worth the time to visit. The Golden Gate Park is huge and has something to offer for everyone.

Golden Gate Park

By Compatible |

Stroll and admire though 1.583 square miles! There’s the California Academy of Sciences, which you can explore for at least 2 and a half hours, and two beautiful gardens, the Japanese Tea Garden, and the San Francisco Botanical Garden. And last but not least, you can also visit the De Young Museum, and visit the beach and spend your day!

Gorgeous Park!

By Jules T |

You can really spend a lot of time in the park. It would be great to see a concert there. Academy of Science museum is interesting, the ferries wheel is cool and botanical gardens worth a visit.

Ok for a walk

By Exploesomemore |

The lake in the middle was pretty. You have to pay to go into the botanical gardens and japanese tea gardens which are probably the nicest parts. We chose not to. There was a live band on the weekend playing which was nice.

This is a great park to visit. It is 20x bigger than Central Park. You would need at least a day to visit. I had the opportunity to visit while driving a Gocar. It is a lovely park.

Loved this park. It's huge. Academy of Science, de Young museum, Japanese garden, they're all inside the Park. Must visit

to slow down in the city

By Donna Rossa |

Huge park.
With multiple options for walking or lounging.
There are paid sectors (botanical garden, Japanese park), free sectors (lakes), paths between the roses, in forest, on a stone bridge.
Sculptures, museums.
I don't think even a week is enough to meet him.

Central Park of San Fran

By christina_stilista |

Enormous, beautifully landscaped with a miriad of museums and attractions to enjoy. I loved the Japanese Tea Garden!

Much variety

By Drastic |

You'd never believe this much peace, fresh air, trees and wildlife could exist in a city. There are vast open areas including Strawberry Hill, an island with hiking trails leading to great views. There's also the botanical gardens, the Japanese garden, and the flower conservatory. Each of those has a separate admission fee, but the costs are reasonable and necessary to keep these places looking good.

Golden Gate Park

Golden Gate Park is packed with greatness

By Shmorti |

We spent half a day at the Park, including visiting the Botanical Gardens & Academy of Sciences. Even in January it was amazing, not to be missed! The fish exhibits at the Sciences were awesome, as were the trees and plants at the Gardens.

Natural beauty in the heart of the city

By Sheri K |

The park is very large and offers many different areas to escape into nature. There are also a number of activities happening in the park, on a regular basis. I must visit again when more flowers are in bloom.

Def worth a visit

Beautiful and Relaxing

GG Park on a Segway

By Wildcat76 |

We recently rented Segways from Golden Gate Park Segway Rentals and had a BLAST touring the GG Park and beyond. We have been on Segway tours before and enjoyed them, but it was even more fun to rent and go out on our own. It is really fun, and a great way to cover a lot of ground in a short time. Instead of giving tours, this place rents them to you and turns you loose on your own. We first went to Alamo Square and the Painted Ladies, then through the entire length of GG Park to the beach. We rode up the hill to the Cliff House and to Land’s End (great views), then back to the rental place. Good equipment, good service, great fun!

Beautiful park

By Tonya H |

Beautiful park. The Japanese Tea Garden was beautiful and peaceful. The Ferris wheel was super cool. You can grab a hot dog here.

Beautiful Park

By Debbie R |

We loved this park and were really surprised how large it was. We started from Stanyan and walked to the opposite end, where there was an amazing beach. No swimming allowed but really worth seeing. We stopped here and had a coffee but it was really a restaurant. Beautiful views from the restaurant and it looked good although a bit pricey. We walked about 12 miles that day and still didn’t see everything. There is a boating lake which also does refreshments. There are toilets in the park and they seemed clean with good hand washing facilities. Nice place to go to relax.

Great stroll, 3 miles!

By Nathan U |

Amazing park! Walked it twice in one day as there are several paths, ponds and ventures to stroll. Phenomenal park in the city with amenities in the amenity!

Mandatory visit in the city

By mesatraveler |

You simply can't miss the Golden Gate Bridge and this is the best spot to wander at your own pace. Cross the bridge by car or on foot, then take in the scene from the park.

Botanical gardens

By SabinaD |

Visited the golden gate park and botanical gardens on New Year’s Day. The botanics are well laid out and worth a wander for anyone interested in gardening or just happy to appreciate beautiful plants/ nature.
The golden gate park is enormous with lots of aspects to enjoy within. Bring a picnic and wander to your hearts content!

I had no idea! I knew virtually nothing about this park before I arrived and was pleasantly surprised the whole time. I arrived via a walk up Haight, and rented a bike right there. Bikes all the way through and down to the ocean! So many pretty stops along the way. The park smells amazingly fresh of eucalyptus trees.

Must see part of San Francisco

By Michael B |

Could have spent all day exploring this huge place in the heart of the city. Buffalo preserve, the AIDS memorial garden, a small druid circle, windmills, Japanese gardens, huge Sequoia trees, open air fields, this place has it all. Even just driving through it all is worth the trip.

What a Beautiful Park!

By WellTraveled3 |

Golden Gate Park is one of he most beautiful and scenic city parks that we have ever visited.

Be sure to check out the SF Botanical Park as well as the Japanese Tea Garden. They are both worth spending some time walking around in.

Beautiful but dangerous! Frequent car break in’s!

By April L |

Be careful, lots of car break ins around this area. It’s a beautiful park but it’s dangerous to leave your car here, especially a rental car. I went to visit the California Academy of Sciences, parked on Nancy pelosi drive, came back to my window smashed. I didn’t have anything in the car, the thieves tried to look inside my trunk but it was empty. I knew they were mad to do all this work to find nothing. I was very unfortunate to park here, this was the only time I parked on the street in SF, other times, I park in a garage. So be careful and park your car in the lot to be more safe! These break in’s happen quick!

Beautiful park

By John_Allwright |

Wow we spent sometime here during our stay it was great you could easily spend a whole day there highly recommended

Active, Green Park

By GlobalGypsy_13 |

This green space rivals the mall in Washington, DC. Lining the sides are various museums including the de Young. Under the central green area that has ample seating and some pop-up vendors, you'll find a public paid parking garage or sometimes a program on the outdoor stage at one end There's also limited street parking, but beware of street closures, especially on weekends. For a taste of vibrant San Francisco, head to Golden Gate Park.

What a vast and tranquil space

By AMohsen |

Briefly, it is worthwhile to pay a visit and go trekking through its internal boulevards and pretty trees. It is quite vast and tranquil and has a variety of parts like wind mill, gardens, lakes, boulevards, and waterfalls. People go there for a picnic, spending tranquil time, walking, escorting pets, and running.

Loaded With Attractions

By Thomas V |

The park is so full of things to do: Museums, an arboretum, a green house, gardens, groves, playing fields, lots of places for picnics, hikes, bike riding, horses. buffaloes!

Beautiful Place

What a fabulous park, great place to visit, lovely cafe and art installations, really enjoyed that afternoon there.

Great park, many things to see and do

By LuckyPierre_11 |

Golden Gate Park is similar in shape than Central Park in New York City but is 20 percent larger! It is full of gardens, playgrounds, lakes, picnic groves, trails, and monuments, plus many events and activities to look for. We took almost a day to visit and did not have enough time. The park itself is very beautiful and well kept. The Conservatory of Flowers, the De Young Museum, the Japanese Tea Garden and the California Academy of Sciences, home to an aquarium, planetarium, a four-story Rainforests of the World dome and natural history museum, Don't miss it!

Beautiful park

By LaVale |

To be able to cross the park there are free shuttles that have various stops inside the park. It is a very large park suitable for doing physical activity or cycling through it. Very clean . Inside the park there are some interesting attractions such as the cemetery for AIDS patients. From that park you can reach the Golden Gate with the 28 bus which stops right at the foot of the bridge.

Could spend more than a day

By Debld |

So much to do and see from the academy to science to the gardens It was a cool day so we did not spend as much time as we would have liked

Golden gate park

By trex30338 |

Golden gate park offers activities for everyone. We enjoyed an afternoon at the aquarium and rain forest. Get tickets for the planetarium show when you arrive. DeYoung museum is worth a visit. Beautiful day, wish we had time to do a bicycle or segway tour

Terrific Park

By NewarkGin |

We arrived early on a Friday and parked in the garage; we’d seen and heard about so many car break ins that we were afraid to park on the street. I wish we had a few days to visit the various components but settled for walking the length just to enjoy the scope of it and the beautiful trees and flowers. I think it needs better signage at almost every intersection.

Pretty but Busy

By stephanie b |

This is a nice area but it can get very crowded. Try to go early in the day and you will avoid some of the crowds.

So much to do!

By aadonoh2 |

The park is beautiful and there are tons of things to do. Multiple of the bigger attractions do require entry fees, though. It was well worth the time to drive through and stop by some of the options.

Wonderful San Francisco attraction.

By Florencia49 |

We rented bikes in Haight Asbury and biked to the Pacific through the park. A treat. The only problem was that there was a lot of car traffic on our way back on MLK Blvd. Not bad on JFK.

There is so much of the Golden Gate Park that you need to decide how much time you are willing to spare and what you want to see. After all it is home to acres and acres which house old buildings, museums, gardens, lakes, and activities as diverse as horse riding to Segway tours. My suggestion is that you do it in multiple visits. It is a beautiful place for nature lovers and is a "must see" in my view for anyone visiting San Francisco.

Japanese gardens in Spring & Windmills

By ItchyFeet |

We went to the Golden Gate Park to see the Japanese Tea Garden in spring, the third week in March 2021. It was beautiful and everything was in bloom. We wandered around and took photos for about two hours. We then went to the San Francisco Botanical Garden and wandered around there for a couple of hours as well.

We got to the Japanese Tea Garden by 9 AM and there were very few people there and the weather was perfect with clear skies which made for a great photography.

Once we saw with the two gardens we went down to see the two windmills at the western most part of the park. The Dutch Windmill with all the tulips is a very beautiful place to see. The other windmill, the Murphy Windmill, didn’t have the same crowds as the Dutch Windmill because the only thing to see is the windmill and not the flower gardens.

I would highly suggest going to see the gardens in the spring when everything is blooming and also go in the morning when the lighting is best and there are less people.

The best time to go see the windmills would be late afternoon when the sun is shining directly on the windows.

PS. This app won’t record the month we went which is really lame. We went in 3rd week in March 2021 and it won’t let me state the month. It says February but we really went to third week in March. Whoever reviews Trip Advisor needs to get this app updated because it’s been lame for years!

A great walk with extras!

Fabulous walk. Even though it was a dull day, this was a lovely experience. From Maclaren Lodge named after one of the founders in the mid 19th century to one of the two Dutch windmills on the Pacific Coast. Lots of hidden places of interest too along the way....

Golden Gate Park is a sprawling urban oasis that never disappoints. My family spent hours exploring gardens, lakes, and museums, with plenty of shaded paths and open lawns for picnics or play. The free shuttle and bike rentals make it easy to navigate, and seasonal events like concerts or flower blooms add extra charm.

Rivals Central Park

By msmacher |

Beautiful park the goes from the middle of San Francisco to the ocean. Home of many great concerts including the free ones in the late 60's. Some must do sites in the park, the Tea Garden, the Flower Conservancy, the museum of arts.

San Francisco’s version of central park.

This park was absolutely beautiful. Filled with open spaces, Museums, botanical garden and a tea garden. It’s a must visit.

A breath of nature in the busy city

If you're looking for a quiet place to go for a walk during your trip to San Francisco, this is definitely the place to do it. My two recommended activities in the park would definitely be the hike up Strawberry Hill and sitting on a bench along Stow Lake. Don't underestimated the size of the park: I was there for almost two hours and still only explored about half of the park.

Fun family day

We loved the Ferris wheel, paddle boats and rose garden. Also enjoyed the California Academy of sciences with our 3 year old granddaughter. For some reason she was entranced with the "fog room" simulating bay area weather!

Beautiful

Beautiful option for a nice and quiet time. The place is big and has many options to walk and stroll around. The gardens are very well kept and beautiful.

Lovely park

We went to Haight Ashbury, which was great, picked up a
Picnic and walked through the park. We didn't know there was a shuttle bus that took you through the park. Unfortunately we left it too late to use it. It goes right down to the coast and a lovely restaurant overlooking the coast. We went there by car the next day. It's called the Beach Challet.

Well Named

The park is truly Golden, a blessing/gift for San Francisco. There's so much to do and see, from museums, to the Japanese Garden to the Botanical Gardens to just ordinary lawns to enjoy and places to walk/run, skate or bike. We spent hours there and had walked so much we were exhausted. I would definitely go back. And I almost didn't mention the Ferris Wheel and the paddle boats, and there are supposedly bison in there somewhere. Go!

Lovely park hours to enjoy

We did not see one tiny bit of this extraordinary place. We walked to the outdoor concert shelter and to the Tea Garden. The view from the tower...
So much more to see.
Plan for several hours here.

Summer 2019

Huge Park, fantastic trails, easy parking

By Shanker B |

this is a great park in the center of SFO - so many attractions to visit. easy to spend the entire day and still wont be able to cover the park attractions. Lovely trails to hike across. parking garage and many parking spots available. lovely trails around the lake. highly recommended attraction

Spent the day here, wandering around.

By MsCasualTravelor |

Once we figured out the parking (free, in designated rows in the middle of JFK or MLK Drives), we walked around here for hours. Saw the outside of the deYoung Museum, Botanical Garden, Conservatory of Flowers buildings (all magnificent). Spent the $9 to walk through the Japanese Tea Garden. Walked through the poignant National AIDS memorial. Found Rainbow Falls from a distance Walked to Strawberry Hill to see the Golden Gate Bridge in its glory. Walked up the ‘hill’ to the Prayer Book Cross, and found the very top of Rainbow Falls right next to it. Along the way, noticed the ‘ticky tacky houses on the hillside’, which are the subject matter of the song ‘Little Boxes’ (used as the theme song for the tv series, Weeds).

Whether you have 1 hour or many hours, this is a great place to visit.

Nice relaxing space

By chowso |

It’s a lovely big park akin to Central Park in New York. However I was disappointed that there was an entrance fee to many places. For that reason we skipped a lot of the attractions. It’s a good place to cycle through though and not too busy traffic wise.

Fun and relaxing

Great place to get away from the busy city. Well maintained trails lead to a variety of plants. Everything was blooming in June.

Beautiful and very clean

By Michelle G |

I was very surprise by our visit here. We wanted to do the Segway tours, but were turned off by the price. Then we tried the bike rental place and were completely ignored by the man working the booth. So we decided to walk to the botanical portion of the garden. There are so many different things to see and do here in the gardens. What surprised me with the separate admission....had hoped this would be completely free.

Hard to see the Buffalo

By K B |

Went to see the Buffalo. They were pinned up at the top of a hill. Couldn't see them very well. Dutch windmill was nice. Beautiful flowers around it. Road was unexpectedly closed during the week. Couldn't see the other half.

Really one of best spots while visiting San Francisco

By dapper777 |

Golden Gate Park in San Francisco is like Central Park in New York City.
A huge, wonderful park.
The Japanes Tea Garden is very nice.
There are some nice trails, long walking/biking paths, some open areas designated for segways and great scenery.
You can easily spend the day here.
There is something for everyone here, awesome, natural beauty, steps away from the crowded streets of the city.
Very clean and well maintained, perfect place to get out of the city for a bit.
Really one of the best spots while visiting San francisco.
Great for just having a peaceful time with nature.
We will go back for sure.
