What a GREAT quaint little town. Be sure to visit the Lighthouse while in town. Beaches are clean with volleyball nets set up on the sand. Little shops and family friendly restaurants. At the Old Port Inn they have see-thru tables to view the ocean below you! (A must see). Along with wine tasting, Pismo Beach is just a few minutes drive away. Enjoy

Feel as driving in Italy or Spain but without the crazy drivers, beautiful views and landscape. I high recommend to take this highway specially if you like to drive.

One of the WORLDS most beautiful drives—the OCEAN is to your Left on the way up—most of the time & on your right on the way back. There are great stops to make some hikes & restaurants. Big Sur has unequaled high up views of the Pacific, great restaurants (with views) & fun shops— not far up from that is Carmel & Monterey—also great towns.

Being from the east coast I'm not use to seeing views like this. I drove from LA to San Francisco. Very beautiful ride, it's very interesting seeing the terrain change. Some parts were a little scary driving by the cliffs but being mindful of your speed and paying attention to the road and you'll be fine. There's lots of places to pull off and stop to look around. Weather in October was perfect, cool in the morning but around noon was warm and comfortable.

As I write the road is closed due to a massive landslide. Never the less, I frankly think that this is the prettiest part of American. (Most Americans have seen parts of it during car commercials.)

While it is a little out of the way. It is the best scenic drive that I have ever taken. Especially if you want to really lower your stress level.

The Only piece of Advice that I can offer on this subject is to make sure that you have a full tank of gas. As the gas for sale here is among the highest in the nation.

The 101-mile drive in Coastal San Luis Obispo County (located 1/2 way between LA and San Fran) is so spectacular. And the best part is all of the small communities with shopping, great places to eat and tons of outdoor activities both land and water. Love it here!

By melcraven8102 |

drove up from los angeles , had wanted to do this journey from a child , reading and hearing about this drive , it did not disappoint. the landscape and scenery beautiful and plenty of places to stop and admire the views and have a drink etc. only disappointment unable to stop at hearst castle but a must do for anyone I think

We had four days and where did we head, to the central coast to be sure. Lovely hotels, beautiful scenery and a peaceful calm was the goal and we succeeded. To name a few, there were Elephant Seals, a Mission, a castle, colleges, gardens, quaint towns, mountains, lakes, restaurents and the ocean.

A favorite day trip since high school, a trip up the coast from my hometown of San Luis Obispo was always a treat. Stopping at Nepenthe for Lolly's Roast Chicken and the amazing view!

We drove up Highway 1 a ways, and it's just a beautiful drive. We were surprised how "rural" it is around San Luis Obispo.

By SDwalkerSOCAL |

You will absolutely love the scenery along this route. The Pacific Ocean and all the towns along the way represent a coast way of life. This is a bucket list item for sure.

By Debora B |

so pretty. this place is really one of a kind. the view is simply breath taking. Great opportunities for photos

One of our favorite parts of Highway 1 is Cambria. Hidden up the hill off the 1, it's the perfect place to stay. You can then jump on the 1 and trek down to discover all SLO County has to offer. We recommend the Pacific Wine Trail or try some of the amazing seafood!

By GETSOMEjay |

Highway 1 always has spectacular views. Best places to stay and fabulous places to eat..... GETSOME!!!

By Tommy O |

From Morro Bay to Cayucos and Cambria the road is easy, and very scenic. Further north of there it is still blocked by a massive mud slide.
Highway 1 north, especially north of San Francisco and the Bay area, the highway is very curvey, dangerous, and on weekends clogged with thousands of cars, and way too many bikes.
My Highway 1 tip.....don't plan on driving on it for a long ways, and when you do, be extra careful!

By Charlotte S |

We recently drove from Cambria down to Pismo Beach; it was a pleasant leisurely drive midweek in the early afternoon. Highway 1 has many attractions and beautiful ocean views. Cayucos is a particularly charming little town that doesn't take long to check out. It's worth a stop -- The Brown Butter Cookie Co. is located on the main street and there's a nice antique shop a couple of doors down. We've stopped for good seafood there in past years. Morro Bay is a wonderful place, but it will take more than a quick stop to do it justice. Stay at least one nite. The drive from Morro Bay to SLO is very interesting as you drive past the huge mounds/hills that lead from Morro Rock to SLO. The traffic at the intersecion of Hwy 1 and Hwy 101 is a shock after enjoying the leisurely drive of Hwy 1.

By john b |

The route on Hwy 1 from SLO to The Inn at Ragged Point is one of the most beautiful drives on the west coast. It takes you past Morro Bay and it's Rock, the towns of Harmony, and Cambria, with it's cute and walkable down town. Hearst Castle is a highlight along the way. The Ragged Point Inn is at the start of the Big Sur road and a great stop for a meal and views. Elephant seals, zebra, and a local herd of elk can often be seen from the hwy. I've been taking this drive for work daily and it never gets old, about 1 hour.

By marros1960 |

I have driven this route a few years ago but this time I was a passenger and it was awesome! We went to see the elephant seals (just north of Hearst Castle) There were so many of them - incredible!

By November_Sunrise |

Yes, this is a beautiful drive but only if you like long drives through mountain, curvy roads. Take your time, go slow and make frequent stops. Plan ahead. Pack food and snacks and be sure to have a full tank of gas. It will most likely be cold and foggy at some stops, pack a jacket. If you get car sick, this drive is not for you.

Once you get outside of Cambria (heading north), there is no where to get off and you are stuck on the 1 until Monterey. So if it doesn't agree with you, you either have to turn back or push ahead to Monterey. Honestly, I love the coast, but driving for hours through winding roads made me miserable.

By Heiko de Vries |

Scenic coastal road with fantastic views. Der Highway No. 1 starts southwest of San Francisco and continues west of Santa Monica. Be careful: Interruption of the highway south of Pfeiffer National Park (broken roads and bridges). The weather has to play along - often it is foggy even in summer!

By Jill J |

I have done countless beautiful road trips. This one was a true wow. You absolutely must take it if the following do not bother you. You cannot be on a time limit. There are simply too many walks to take, vistas to view, and other people doing the same to rush. It is unspoiled which is simply amazing, but with that there are VERY few places for a bathroom or food or gas purchase. If you need any of those you will be distracted- prepare. Do not come if you are afraid of heights, afraid of continuous hairpin turns, get annoyed driving behind people enjoying scenery or bring anyone who does. Once you are on this road you cannot get off. If you are fine with the above you will not want to. It would be a long drive with young children as it is gorgeous but the times to get out of the car are overlooks and can be a long way down. Now - if you are still interested you MUST take this trip. I could have stopped all day at any point just to absorb the experience. There are many state parks and trails along the way. My husband loved the actual driving. I would have driven off the road as I would have at one point or another been trying to take in the views. We went through periods of intense fog to complete clarity. Every stop was amazing but as others have mentioned the stop at the elephant seal rookery was a highlight. They are RIGHT there. When we were there we could see about 5 in the water but then if you go right or left they are laying all over the beach, sunning or fighting. I have a new vision of what I look and feel like after a good meal. In summary, if this remotely appeals to you, make the time. Words are inadequate to describe.

By Roger R |

Took the drive yesterday to visit the Hearst castle and elephant seals, castle amazing and well worth the $25 admission
Male elephant seas with the distinctive nose are out to sea but thousands of females on the beaches
Just north of Cambria we saw about 50 zebras in a field

By Connie F |

This is a gorgeous area of the California coast line. Filled with wildlife and beautiful views you will not regret cruising through the local towns. There is low population and easy parking with tons of beach access.

By Scottie M |

Travelled from Santa Maria, stopped at Morro which is a lovely town with shops, restaurants and marina, most shops closed around 6pm but eateries still open. Stand on the platforms outside the restaurants to watch the seals. From here head up highway 1. Youl go away from the coast but then come back i , loads of stopping off points on the coast side, be sure to stop and have a look at Cambria, very quaint little place with loads of winerys, carry on and at the sign for the elephant seals, this is brilliant, you can walk along the coast and see an abundance of elephant seals, young uns, loads of sea birds. Theres a lighthouse just further up too. We didnt go much further as the road was closed, but i would advise anyone that has the time to do the full coastal route, especially if you like the sea coast, seals and birds, the larger birds of prey get really close to. I. Some stop overs theres benches along the way but not all of them. And you cant get onto the beach where the seals are as theyre protected but your close enough.

Highway 1 from Morro Bay north to Ragged Point is one of the most spectacular and beautiful road trips you can take on the West Coast of North America. To start, plan on Breakfast at the Coffee Cup on the Embaradaro. Then it's off to the north. Stop in Cayucos for some cookies to much on as you go. Get off Hwy 1 at Cambria to explore the many shops and Moonstone Beach. Next it's San Simeon Beach and Hearst Castle. Stay nearby for the night along with watching the sunset. In the morning it's a short ride to Elephant Seal Beach. After that make sure your camera battery is fuully charged again. The next fifteen miles or so you'll be winding up switchbacks on Hwy 1. Don;t worry, it's safe and awesome. There are many small spots to pull over to view the Pacific, cliffs, beaches and wildlife. Did you miss the water on your right? You've now arrived at Ragged Point. No further explanation is needed.

Not to be Missed Drive... Drove highway one from Carmel By the sea all the way down to Malibu on my way to LA.
Many pull overs along the highway to enjoy the views of the sea and take photographs

By allsheewrote |

Ask a local and they will tell you they avoid the 1 at all costs. It is a winding, nauseating ride/drive. If you want to go scenic, this isn't it. You have to pay such close attention to the 'death curves' that there's no time to enjoy. Plus, no stops for incredibly long stretches of time...none for gas nor food so.....I suppose fans of the 1 will not be happy with this review, however in my opinion, if you have ever driven the Blue Ridge Pkwy at its curviest points just think of that and tenfold it. Do yourself a favor and plan your trip using as little of the 1 or not using it at all, as possible. Fair warning.

I'm born and raised in California and don't drive this scenic route as often as I should. The California coastline is beautiful and unlike any other drive in CA. It's not a fast route, but worth the drive and make sure to stop once in a while.

By Mauijeanne |

Great countryside. We were heading north to Monterey...got all the way to Ragged Point and there was a sign that said the road was closed. Would have been nice to know that a bit earlier in the drive.

By Ronald Q |

I'm not the type of person that likes to be stuck in a car for hours. I like to get from point A to Point B without any stops. This drive though completely blew me away. The views are probably one of the best coastal views I have ever seen. We actually had to make multiple stops because the scenery was just spectacular. I highly recommend driving by during sunset or sunrise. However, if you do not have much time don't think about it, just go. Just make sure you take your time and enjoy it because you will not want to leave.

By beachgirl60 |

We live in Southern California and everytime we travel north or south we always stick to highway 1.The scenic drive is the best on the west coast,as you have the ocean and its ever changing colors and activity!

By Aaron G |

Just like all the photos show this is a beautiful drive. There are points where you can stop and take pictures. If you are from the east coast like me this is an incredible change of scenery being so high off the water. The weather here makes the view and drive even more wonderful. Give yourself all day to just drive and look around.

By David B |

Suggest the driver focus on the road and the general scenery. Passengers will always get the best views. Ocean views are spectacular and hikes can be terrific.

By baj2300 |

We travelled San Simeon through to Pebble Beach and thoroughly enjoyed the drive.
Unfortunately we needed to keep our eye on the clock and did not have time to pull over to the many scenic spots, but how you choose to pull into one and not another?? Traffic was fairly light so we managed a good balance between getting to our destination and enjoying the drive.
Definitely should have done a little more planning as to good lunch spots or packed a picnic as good eateries were not obvious.

By RonCentralCA |

What can I say? This is coastal route built end-to-end during the Great Depression as part of the WPA project. Stunning views.
Whatever your navigation tool may tell you, be prepared to take much longer. slow moving RV's and slower driving gawkers. This is especially true when travelling between Ragged Point (a little ways north of San Simeon) and Big Sur where you regularly encounter turns of 15 or 20 MPH. Being a central Californian, I am biased, but the views and drive are better north of Ragged Point. Just get used to the idea of slowing down, knowing that it will take time and sit back and relax. If a driver gets on your butt just hang back more. They back off, back to normal - repeat as necessary.

By Kristina K |

This is a must in California! The drive is absolutely incredible with stunning views of the coast. I will say that the drive from beginning to end wouldn't be good for people who get car sick or dizzy easily. Otherwise, it was definitely worth it! I loved every minute of it!

By Jenny P |

When you’re driving central Coast / Big Sur, Hwy 1. Please pullover if you decide you want to take a picture or enjoy the view a little longer. Don’t slow down to take in the view or take photo. Use the pullout lane or shoulder. And let the trail of cars behind you get to their destinations (like work) without having to endure your lack of judgement.

By taylorscreed |

Beautiful scenery and a great drive when sunny. First day there was cloudy so you couldn't see all the beauty of it. We went back close to sunset and it was amazing!!

By JustGalee |

Beautiful view of the ocean and great drive for those of us that like mountain curves! So much to see along the coast. Loved the drive.

By chickandbeast |

Every time we travel we seek the excitement of the mountains and additionally a curvy winding coastal road. Weather won't stop is as we have a limited amount of time to explore. The Highway 1 discovery route we explored on a rainy grey day, not ideal, but we did enjoy it and even parked on the side of the road for a little picnic.

Unfortunately on any of the small coves or beaches dogs are not allowed which somewhat limited us, although we saw others breaking this rule we didn't, while not agreeing with the rule as we are responsible pet owners we are respectful. We were grateful dogs were allowed on the Santa Monica Pier, our boys are world travellers too.

Driving Highway one is beautiful and dangerous. I do not know if the road is all the way open between Carmel and Cambria yet. Be careful of all the sight seers that stop in the middle of the road to take pictures. The elephant seals up the coast from Hearst Castle is worth the stop to watch them.

By Superkidsmom |

What a beautiful road trip, it was amazing and it will be an forgettable route. It was closed down part of the highways after we visited as the flooding broke some of the road. Natural scene is amazing and it won't be the same from time to time. Lucky to read all reviews and decided to depart from San Francisco to LA and we can have the most beautiful scenes and it was really really pretty. As all reviewers said must go at least once in your life.

By baymare1 |

I love to drive and I love driving twisty roads, this stretch of road is absolutely addicting. A new gorgeous view around every curve. Do NOT be in a hurry, it takes all the fun out of the drive. Have some of your favorite road trip music on the stereo, open the sun roof or drop the top and enjoy. (bring snacks and make sure you have a full tank of gas, too). I've driven this route in deep fog, it's still gorgeous, but disappointing not to see the views, on a clear day, your eyes and all your senses are in for a treat! Enjoy!

By mildoleontien |

Highway 1 is closed at a certain point between Elephant Seal Beach and Monterey due to landslides. It is still worth going up from Morro Bay to Elephant Seal Beach, then back and across to the 101 to take you to Monterey.

By 2TravelersMn |

Highway 1 has got to be one of the most beautiful and diverse roads in America. Remember, "It's not about the destination...it's about the journey."

By GitchSup |

We traveled Highway 1 up the coastline and the views and vistas are stunning, if you get a chance to even drive a short bit of HWY 1 you should. A word of caution though, when the sign says there is a curve in the road it's not a suggestion!

By Carol B |

Stopped at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park just to take the edge off driving all day. A little meander down to the creek turned into a two hour hike up to Buzzard's Roost! Although we hadn't planned to" hike" (flipflops, no water, no sunscreen), the lure of the woodsy trail .. . . WOW!

By mars52 |

What an enjoyable drive down the coast particularly when the driver was our Californian son- in- law where we enjoyed great views of Pacific Ocean passing Carmel, stopping for lunch at a little roadside cafe and visiting Hearst Castle San Simeon before settling down for the night in the pretty Le Petit Soleil hotel, San Luis Obispo

By kellybee7 |

We're from SoCal and we haven't even explored all the small cities and beach towns along Highway 1! I know it's because we return to some places again and again...like San Simeon for the elephant seals and a meal at Cavalier, Cambria for the beach boardwalk and wine tastings, Los Osos for the nature trails. These places are all quaint and worth exploring. I'm surprised Morro Bay and Pismo beach aren't listed in the destinations, but they're there in between.

Ragged Point is immediately south of Big Sur (spectacular views) but really this whole Central Coast strech is dotted with quaint places of interest. We usually allot a week's vacation, stay in at least 2 towns plus do a day's exploring in a 3rd town. Our kids love the beach, tide pools and seal sightings. Us adults love the trails and food/wine specialties.

By ehrayman |

What a wonderful area, beautiful and peaceful. The Morro Bay Inn is the bomb and the food five star in their restaurant. Quite a surprise.

By Rebecca R |

Coming from the east coast where the beaches are lined with either house or hotels, this drive is a beautiful contract. The majority of the views have been left undeveloped and unblocked for you and me to enjoy. Cliffs over the ocean look out to rock outcroppings where waves crash spraying into the air! Keep a look out for otters, seals, and whales!

By snowythepyro |

The coastal views are phenomenal - take your time, don't rush by. There are plenty of places to stop off and take in the view. You can often see elephant seals.

By old-man-orange |

We are in the Central Coast for a wedding. Drove up from LAX and once we got to Ventura area the ride and views are spectacular. Due to rain the flower blooms
Were impressive and the lakes are full
Again

Santa Barbara is a worthy stop as are many of the views along the way … and of course Big Sur

By scott123xyz |

Heading up Hwy 1 out of SLO town going past Cambria and San Simeon you are in Gods country. A castle then the sea lions a light house and open road. Looking in any direction it could be 1617. Raw beauty at it's best. Even though the slide has closed the road all the way through There is plenty to see before you get that far north. Make this drive and turn around. You will enjoy the view going both ways. Its well worth seeing one of the most beautiful and magnificent drives on the Planet!

By Batman228686 |

We drove up the day Hwy 1 reopened from San Simeon. the views were spectacular (wish I wasnt in our SUV) but the traffic queues going south looked horrendous. If you're not in any kind of a hurry - do it.

By treborz1 |

Viewed on a sunny day, this road has to be one of most beautiful in America. Allow plenty of time for photo stops along the scenic coastline.

By Mark N |

I would highly recommend taking Highway 1 down the coast from San Francisco down to San Diego, especially the Central Coast, from Monterey to San Luis Obispo. Be sure to stop by the bakery in Big Sur. It is at the Shell Station in Big Sur. Also be sure to see the Elephant Seals near Hearst Castle, north of Cambria and north of San Simeon.

By 2017happycamper |

Pick up a to go order for a picnic lunch and sit on the beach north of Morro Bay. Enjoy the elephant seals north of San Simeon and check out the shops and restaurants in Cambria.

By Mr Muki |

Fantastic views all along the road with several interesting stops along the way, Don't forget to stop at the sea lions.

By Sheila X |

Very beautiful scenary along the way. Will go again to book the golf courses next time. The elephant seal is definitely a must see

By Liza W |

I've lived here for 30 years and have visited this highway before settling here. From Cambria, to Ragged Point, Gorda (only gas station), Big Sur, Nepenthe Restaurant and gift store, Henry Miller Library, Andrew Molera State Park, Limekiln State Park, Pfeiffer State Park, various trails, Jade Cove, Garapata Beach..endless attractions. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ENOUGH GAS TO GET YOU TO CARMEL. THE ONLY GAS STATION UNTIL BIG SUR (74 miles) IS GORDA (40 miles) AND THEY ARE VERY VERY EXPENSIVE. We were eating at the Gorda restaurant when we overheard a group of folks driving a diesel car. They had to have AAA drive up diesel from Cambria.
--With the heavy rains, Pfeiffer Bridge is out and being rebuilt. The road is slated to open in September 2017. Not sure how far south the road is open from Carmel.

By Teri K |

Take your time, relax. Especially,if you love animals it will be a heavenly trip. Have horses? Camp with them at Montana de Oro.There are a multitude of natural wonders to take your breath away. Inland and ocean vistas are gorgeous, and lodgings range from fabulous and expensive,to nice and reasonable to great camping sites. I have been on trips by myself with dogs and a horse, friends, romantic escapes, family outings.

By Brian R |

The wife and I drove up Highway 1 from SLO to Monterey in the rain. The ride was beautiful! We stopped at the Elephant Seal Reserve and the Elephant Seals were literally 100 feet from the parking lot. A great stop even in the rain!

By JimmyJackk |

Took drive over to Morro Bay on Easter weekend. Not much traffic and very enjoyable. Very scenic drive.

By Alison B |

As other reviewers have said, the stretch of Highway 1 between San Luis Obispo to Carmel has got to be one of the most beautiful stretches of road in the country, if not the world. We spent 2 nights in SLO, made it to Hearst Castle for an afternoon tour (a must see, at least once in your life), spent the night in San Simeon (try Cambria instead for an overnight - San Simeon not much of a much) and then slowly worked our way north to Monterey. I highly recommend January for traveling as we had fabulous weather (clear and warm) and no crowds. The parking lot at Hearst Castle gives you some idea of what the crowds must be like in the summer - way too crazy. But whatever you do, stop and look and stop and walk. The CA state park system is amazing and provides many hiking opportunities to get to the beach as well as to view the world from the top of a cliff. One day we saw many whale spouts in the distance - they were migrating north with us. Put this road trip on your bucket list and plan for at least 2 days.

By AsimDalal |

The drive from San Fransisco to Los Angeles on this route is fantastic. You have to use this route to visit San Jose, Palo Alto, Gilroy, Paso Robales, San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach, Morro Bay, Solvang, Santa Barbara etc etc. It is a great route and gets scenic at times especially when your driving through wine country. Fortunately there were not many road works during our trip so the traffic was smooth most of the time.

By Toblje |

The winding coastal road between San Luis Obispo and Monterey is considered one of the most beautiful panoramic routes in the world. The views are indeed breathtaking and there are numerous exits that invite for shorter and longer breaks. Particularly beautiful are the places where you can observe seal elephants, such as Point Piedras Blancas. Unfortunately, the coastline is often in thick fog, then you have none of this. For the whole route it takes about 3 hours without longer stops.

By Stacie J |

Highway One is magical ... I'm reminded each time I visit. From the elephant seals in San Simeon to the pier to iconic pieces of history like Sebastians and Hearst Castle this one of the special gems in California.

By jacksleonh |

If you get the chance this should be on you bucket list. Long drive. Make sure you have a full tank of gas. It took us all day to drive it with plenty of stops for photos and a hike in a camp area with waterfalls. Watch out for drivers in a hurry. Just pull over and let them pass.

By epic9990 |

We drove from LA to San Fran over several days. The views are spectacular with plenty of places to stop to take them in. A must drive.

By sharrongeg |

I have done this drive many times. The views are spectacular (if the fog isn’t in) and there limitless places to stop, gawk, walk, hike & picnic. This past drive was uber slow due to large RVs and folks not wanting to allow folks to pass them. PLEASE be courteous and share the road.

By Kymberly W |

Where do you go and what can you do when you have three generations, four days to travel, and a goal to achieve at least 10,000 steps per day? Let me rephrase that: what place meets the needs of middle-aged twins who want “active travel” options, a 19 year old who is game for whatever as long as heavy exertion is not required, and a mom/ grandma who needs to make decisions based on safety?

When my sister and I, both baby boomers, were offered the opportunity to head up the Highway 1 Discovery Route, we were all over it like elephant seals on sand!

Turns out the Cambria/ Harmony/ San Simeon area (best known for Hearst Castle) is the ideal vacation destination for multigenerational travel. Even better, winter is an ideal time to visit this accessible section of central California. Crowds are down; prices are low; and the number of things to do and see is sky high. Seriously, I had thought of the area as “sleepy” but we could have spent a week and still not have exhausted the options.

By JanN216 |

Because we live here, can’t tell you how many drives up the coast we have taken over the years. The view never gets old, the winding road - and the one long straight road spance, are all breath taking. Seeing wind surfers, or zebras (Hearst Ranch area) and of course elephant seals along the way is always a treat. Ragged Point is a great stopping place and over the years we have taken picnics and of course the best view (and expensive lunch) is at Nepenthes. Every season brings new sights, different flora and fauna. Enjoy the ride! (But not for those who get car sick or have a fear of heights).

By Rana Irfan A |

I traveled from LA to SF many times in US while visiting the country but this time in April 2018, I decided to take Highway 1 Discovery Route. My God, it was awesome. We enjoyed this scenic route a lot.

By SycamoreGuestService |

The communities on the Highway 1 Discovery Route are some of the most charming, not only in San Luis Obispo County, but in all of California. Avila Beach, Cayucos, Cambria, and the other locations on the Highway Route feature amazingly unique and diverse and fun travel experiences. They represent a truly authentic sense of California. Do not miss it!

By ItchyFeet |

Everybody thinks that Highway one is completely closed, but that’s just not true. Ragged Point is very active and open where there are food options available, a hotel, a gas station and a great lookout.

We drove from San Simeon for about two hours to Limekiln Park and there were very few people on the road because apparently everyone thinks it’s closed.

There is a u-turn turnaround about two hours north of Ragged Point, but it is well worth the drive to go up and back.

We spent about three hours driving up and back and pulling off at the many pull outs to take photos of different viewpoints.

We did this Sunday, August 4, 2024 and if you’re reading this now, I would say that it’s a great time to go because there are dramatically less people than an average summer.

He will also be able to see the dramatic repairs that are being done along the highway, as well as the repairs that have already been done since there was major damage on multiple sections of the highway.

By James K |

We drove the winding Pacific Coast Highway from San Simeon north to Monterrey. Going north worked out best, as you could be on the inside lane. It just feels safer, as some locals drive fairly fast. However, scenic stops along the way can be tricky, as you need to cross the oncoming lane to park the car and the visibility is often blocked. But the stops are worth it. The 100 or so miles that we drove took between 3 and 4 hours, depending on construction zones (Oct. 2018 had a number of them) and the number of stops you make. You may be tempted to look at scenery while driving, but I wouldn't recommend it. Worth every minute!

By pbesec a |

A gorgeous drive and you should take your time to stop at any of the many turnouts and lookouts. Great opportunities for photos

By DocSavage_007 |

At least once in your lif, you should drive the Pacific Coast Highway from San Luis Obispo to Monterey. Truly one of the world’s most spectacular drives. So much to see, from Hearst Castle, to the Elephant seals, to the spectacular cliffs over the Pacific Ocean, it can’t be missed. Set aside at least a whole day so you can get out and look and wander around!

By Sggypsy |

Many interesting sights, good hiking, parks, cute towns to explore. Beautiful ocean views and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.

By TravelerfromArizona |

What is not to like? Mild weather, great scenery and fun little towns to stop in. We ate a lunch in Cuyucos and stopped to see the Elephant Seals. Went off the path for some wine tasting, just a great weekend.

By RSM123123 |

Some hair pin turns but the greatest views in the U..S.
And I was in.a German car with new Pirelli tires. Really some tight squeezes.
Next time I'll stop at the Citizen Kane castle.
Pro tip: Highway 1 has a total of just over 656 miles, it is the longest state route in California

By Bhushan Timla |

Scenic coastal road with fantastic views. We start our trip in the Highway No. 1 from San Jose, to Los Angels. But due to road closure our trip continue up to few miles after McWay Waterfall, and have to back some 40 miles to Carmel-By-Th-Sea and continue from Carmel-By-Th-Sea to LA from via I-5 S and US-101 S.
Nevertheless, still wonderful beauty, an epic driving tour and weather that tends to be sunny on most days (with a bit of morning mist).

The road we'd crossed till McWay Waterfall was such a beauty. The weather has to play along - often it is foggy even in summer! Great road, wonderful beaches and views along various parts. Big Sur is probably the wildest part but there are multiple sections of beauty along the way. Lot of paradise like beaches, Cypress Point, Lone Cypress, Pebble Beach, Bixby Bridge and McWay Falls; all spots were picture perfect.

Will definitely like to ride this highway uninterruptedly in coming trip to California.

This slice of heaven lies on California's Central Coast, and stretches from the south end of the Big Sur Coastline, through San Simeon/Hearst Castle, the seaside art hamlet of Cambria, iconic beach town of Cayucos, Morro Bay, Los Osos & Baywood Park (gateway to the gorgeous Montaña de Oro State Park), through San Luis Obispo wine region, and the classic beach towns of Avila Beach, Pismo Beach, Arroyo Grande, Nipomo, and Oceano.

There is so much to do here with outdoor activities, arts, music, and food & wine events, even the locals can't do it all. make this a frequent destination and make sure to explore all the amazing destinations along the way!

Driving the 1 has been legendary and the views are breathtaking. It is fantastic that it is now open again. My husband and I drove it last December. i agree with others that it can take about 3 1/2 hours, so if you are in a hurry to get to Carmel Monterey or beyond best do the 101.
A couple of cautions. The road does have a lot of hairpin turns and it truly hugs the coastline. If any family member is prone to motion sickness, this may not be the best choice of roadways.
Also although most drivers are cautious and pleasant, you may encounter some drivers that are in a hurry, rude and will attempt to pass or hug your bumper. We had one fellow that obviously had issues and resorted to honking, shouting and gestures. By the time the three cars in front of him (our car included) could get to a safe area to pull over, e was in quite an obnoxious state.
All that being said it is a drive worth taking!

I went here last year in Winter with my son, mom, and sister, and we had the time of our lives. Camera in hand, we went on beach hikes, cliff walks, to Hearst Castle, antique/ thrift shopping, visiting Clydesdale horses close up, and even to a glass-blowing viewing. Without my camera, we also dined in some fab restaurants that had plenty of options for vegetarian me. My 86-year-old mom went crazy for all the desserts. The area is so beautiful that we'd just randomly pull over on the road to walk around and take pictures. And the most surprising thing is that it took us less than 2 hours to get there from our home in Santa Barbara. My son loved it so much that he had his dad take him back there for a thrift shopping weekend. It would be hard to overstate how beautiful this area is.

Drive safely and enjoy the beautiful scenery that this amazing drive offers. Plenty of places to pull over to get great pictures.

But for now it's sort of a hit or miss deal....If it hits ya it's a huge Dump truck carrying huge boulders or whatever. If you go past the long last straightaway after the Lighthouse you have gone to far for now.Huge trucks were last I checked making their runs many many of them up to the road closure and back like drunken sailors on shore leave for the first time in a year. You place your life in their hands as they are over the middle line on every turn.If they are still moving material don't go up the hill after the straightaway after the Lighthouse.Safe a s can be from Morro Bay up till there...Don't know about the Monterrey side but if the big trucks are running there nowhere is safe from the Bay to the slide...

Beauty surrounds this area no matter where you look, no matter what time of year. Perfect for fun and thrilling activities and adventure or just relaxing in the sun and sipping on a glass of local wine. Anywhere you travel along the Highway 1 Discovery Route will offer great food and shopping, not to mention the area's beautiful natural outdoor elements.

All seem to know that Hwy #1 goes from SLO to Cambria. At SLO, it merges with the S-101 till Pismo Beach then goes mostly Coastal till around Guadalupe. Several great beach parks are also found along here, the include: Avila, Shell, Pismo, Grover, & Guadalope Dunes, among some others. Some are touristy, but some are very serene & placid. The #1 segment that goes from Pismo to Guadalupe is off the beaten path, but has quite a bit to offer.

Of course, the more well known segment from Morro Bay to at least Cambria is quite nice, but touristy.

My friends and I traveled on The Highway 1 Discovery Route last December during the Christmas vacation time. It is an amazing combination of outdoor sports and nature, wine, gastronomic delights featuring some of the best seafood my friend's and I have ever had, and so much more, all nestled in beautiful California coastal towns. Highway 1 is famous for its windy roads beside perilous cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The 101-mile-long Highway 1 Discovery Route is situated between San Francisco and L.A. attracts 3 to 4 million visitors a year. Along the route you will find such popular attractions as the Hearst Castle, the Elephant Seal Rookery, dozens of wine vineyards (11 just in the 40 minute drive from Rock to Castle), oyster farms, and charming coastal towns. This region is remarkably diverse, yet it’s a compact area.

Some highlights of our adventure includes a visit to Hearst Castle, a personal guided tour along the Morro Bay Estuary with Central Coast Kayaks, watching the sunset with Elephant Seals at Piedras Blancas just at the start of their birthing season in late December, a winery tour and tasting at Kelsey See Canyon Vineyards, Pedego Electric biking, in Avila Beach, and relaxing in our private mineral springs hot tub on the balcony of the Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort & Spa

This is a unique and special route in our big country: it's easy to get to, there are lots of great shops, incredible dining and wine opportunities, small beach picturesque communities, and activities that are great for families with lots to do outdoors. This is my usual top priority for vacations and my experience on this route did not disappoint. I would definitely go back as 4 day was not nearly enough time to see everything in the region. I think many people, especially of the younger generation, may not consider this part of CA as a vacation destination, but that is a mistake.

Highway One in San Luis Obispo County is a must see! There is so much to do along this stretch of highway one. We experienced amazing ocean and coastal views; toured Hearst Castle; watched the elephant seals; strolled charming coastal towns; enjoyed great hikes; and really enjoyed the area wineries.

By Dana D |

The coast highway is a beautiful drive. The ocean views, wild life, and no billboards! Take. Snacks because there are long stretches with no food.

By slambslo |

Ocean surf touching pristine beaches and ragged cliffs mark your route as you wind through country that will take your breath away! The wonders of Hearst's castle in the air where zebras roam and hawks circle to a rookery home to seal elephants and coves where jade can be found on the sand...magic abounds throughout. Stop at special vintage Californian towns and places like Cayucos, Cambria, Ragged Point ...drink and eat at Nepenthe in Big Sur and be apart of the mystical place that is Esalen...just wonder when you can take the journey again...

A perfect week spent hiking, kayaking, biking, and beach combing. The wildlife is abundant. The docents are everywhere if you want a guide. This trip we did hikes to Piedras Blancas and to Pt. San Luis light houses. Try the whale watching tour at Piedras Blancas. This photo is from kayaking in Morro Bay. Even the seals love it when you paddle by to say hi.

Always wanted to do this drive, never thought it would be better than i imagined. The roads were in good shape, the traffic was reasonable(except for a couple of losers driving 2 door sports cars), the views were out of this world, and all the man made stops were good(not to big to take away beauty, and enough to be safe) Lastly, unlike most coast lines in the USA it hasn't been burdened by an ugly house or cottage.

By Susan H |

Wow!!! It seems the population boom on the planet has found its way to this scenic route...I was flabergasted at the sheer volume of traffic, and jams and people. This drive will ALWAYS be one of the best in the world, even with these numbers. We were in bumper to bumper stop and go for nearly an hour, ONLY due to a scenic pull out that everyone wanted to use. Big Sur...cars EVERYWHERE... Like I said, the route always delivers, but be prepared. No way around the masses.

By Chris K |

As a long time resident of the Central Coast it's always fun to get out and try new things. I recently stumbled upon a complimentary road map which was provided by Highway One Discovery Route. What a blast! So many great things to do and see that I never knew existed. Highly recommend this for a first timer wanting to experience the heart of California!

By AsimDalal |

Also called the Pacific coast highway The drive starting from Carmel and interesting places like Big Sur where you can visit the Big Sur Bakery , Bixby Bridge, Partington Cove, Ragged Point, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve , Cayucos , and then we went to Paso Robles after San Simeon. One can also visit the famous Hearst Castle.
A nice car and a good camera is what you need on this route to enjoy the lovely and mind blowing vistas and can experience the sunset.

Once again a nice ride on HWY 1 from Santa Cruz towards South. As always, great views and beautiful scenery.

Due to massive rain in winter, there was an earth slide. That means shortly after Pfeiffer Park HWY 1 is closed. No detour available. Therefore it is not possible to travel farther South than this. It can also not be foreseen when things are "repaired". Please consider this when making your plans.

Traveling on a Convertible road trip with family. On our way from SLO to Hearst Castle, stopped along the way. Absolutely Beautiful.

We traveled Highway 1 from LA to Hearst Castle. It was a great trip! We spent 4 1/2 days and could have used even more time. In San Luis Obispo we only had one night and wished we had at least two days. We had a lovely dinner at Nova, beside the creek serenaded by frogs. Great food.

By Dead-Air-Dave |

There is no more beautiful drive than up Highway 1, hugging California's coast line. Don't be in a hurry because you'll want to take in every aspect of your journey.

By Bob H |

This is a wonderful road that for many mikes is along the Pacific coast. Do not use it as a freeway, it is not. Great scenic drive with lots to see and do along the way. Most is one lane in each direction, but the scenery is not something that you will want to speed past.

By Chad S |

THis is a drive not for the faint of heart, nor anyone who has issues with car sickness. Highway 1, if you are not aware, is literally right on the cliff edge much of the drive. It is very curvy and borderline dangerous. Be alert, drive careful, and keep your eyes on the road. You have to do it once! Gorgeous.

The Highway 1 Discovery Route is an easy driving vacation filled with cool beach towns - all with excellent restaurants and cute hotels - many right on the water. On one side of Highway 1 is the dramatic coastline interspersed with sandy beaches - perfect for surfers and thousands of elephant seals visible four miles north of Hearst Castle. If you get to the Elephant Seal Rookery before 4 pm, docents will explain the life cycle of these huge creatures. The other side of the highway contains rolling, green hills dotted with black cattle.

The Hearst Castle is well worth a visit, including the museum at the Visitors Center. Across the street, the historic Sebastian's Store has been converted into a wine tasting room - all good varietals - and your 15.00 refunded with a purchase. Steak sandwiches and burgers (delicious) are made with the beef from the Hearst Ranch and can be eaten with your wine tastings.

We loved tiny Harmony with its great winery, glass blowing shop, pottery studio and the world's tiniest chapel. Nearby in Cayucos, the Cass House restaurant features trendy farm to table dishes and the best lobster roll on milk bread at reasonable prices. Just up the street is the famous Brown Butter Cookie Company with lots of free samples. Morro Bay was great for flat cycling trails around The Rock, past the beach and over to the Cloisters. The kayaking and golfing are good here too. Best places to eat right on the water include Windows on the Water, The Gallery and the local favorite for breakfast, La Parisienne. Good restaurants in Cambia include The Black Cat, Linn's (gourmet breakfast/bakery) and Robin's (Thai-influenced menu)

The scenic coast route is blocked for this year south of Big Sur thru next June plus bridge damage closure south of Carmel, repairs work thru September 2017. After Carmel and monterey, drive back to hwy 101 ,then at Paso Robles detour to the coast for charming Cambria or Hearst Castle and San Simeon. Many worthwhile vistas and town southward : Morro Bay, Shell Beach and Pismo Beach, Grover Beach. Inland are San Luis Obispo and the wine valleys off 101.

By appleaday4u |

Glorious view no matter what time of year but especially beautiful this past spring with all the wild flowers. The road is right along the coastline so it’s high up at times with quite a drop off (yes guard rails) and winds around. Not recommended for those who get car sick.

By familyfun625 |

As of March 2018 the highway north of Ragged Point is closed. Big Sur may be accessed by driving south from Monterey.

By Drastic |

The nicest part of Hwy. 1 begins at San Luis Obispo and continues north from there, all the way past San Francisco into Marin County. Make it a multi-day trip, and get out of that car! The best experiences are to be had on foot. Stop at beaches, parks, towns, and don't miss Big Sur.

By Johnny B |

Great views along the coast. A full day of driving from LA to Santa Cruz. Enjoyed taking our time with frequent scenic stops

By Kiley N |

Are you looking for an amazing road trip? You've found it. It is fantastic. The views, the towns along the way, the fun activities... There's something for everyone, and you won't want to miss this. No matter where you end up, you'll love everything Highway 1 brings your way. Let the adventure begin. :)

This is one of the most spectacular highways in this country, but watch weather as it can be closed due to unfortunate slides, but worth the effort.

By BluRavdriver |

We enjoyed our road trip down the coast from SF so much that we took Route 1 for the ride back home. Lots of places to park and view the beautiful ocean. The farms along the way are also interesting.

By James A |

Great road, wonderful beaches and views along various parts. Big sur is probably the wildest part but there are multiple sections of beauty along the way.

I’ve dropped a star only because this is probably a victim of its own success - example we couldn’t park at the Bixby bridge because there simply were so many people - about 20 or so cars. Likewise, some of the hikes are pretty packed with lots of other tourists and even school trips.

Nevertheless, still wonderful beauty, an epic driving tour and weather that tends to be sunny on most days (with a bit of morning mist)

By Jill J |

There is not a more beautiful location anywhere on earth. I love the gorgeous coastline and wonderful little towns throughout the route. You see everything from cows to elephant seals to whales and even zebras (Hearst Castle)!

By WaywardWander9 |

Not really sure what else you can say about this magical road that takes you across cliffs and right by the Pacific Ocean from the southern end of the state to the tippy top and more. Really a beautiful road and route, it is a must do for any visit.

By DrAudreyReed |

Enjoy the leisurely ride up or down the old surf towns of California. Let the guy behind you pass, who uses this road as his hasty retreat home from work and take a breath into the past.
We spent alot o time on this road in different areas and will say that from Santa Barbara, to Pismo beach it is a luxury of time and sweet salty smells.
Most of the shops are Mom and Pops, so please support the local communities.

By thawsout |

The scenic laces along the discoverability are just see destinations to share with visitor s or just to renew your spirits and gather strength from nature! Most recently and my most frequent (closest) getaway is the Guadalupe Dunes Beach and nature center. The drive out to the less crowded beach is through spectacular sand dunes uninhabited save for the protected Snowy Plover nesting sites! Yes, the silent film and bits of Pirates both the Caribbean were also filmed here. A few families and surf fishers frequent the isolated beach, restrooms, yes; no food vendors or crowds, just natural scenic wonders! Show children what unspoiled beauty can be! Where You walk is restricted to areas not fenced off to protect the little the Snowy Plover's nesting areas, so most of the dunes are Off limits, but so much open, uncluttered and dramatic beach with often crashing waves and Some of the flights of shorebirds, seagulls, pelicans in formation just waiting to amaze those fortunate enough to visit this Valuable and accessible natural treasure!

By RikkiDunsmore |

Highly recommend getting off the beaten path and appreciating the natural beauty at a remote beach. Stop by the Coastal Discovery Center for some great interpretive information, rent kayaks, and stroll out the pier across from Hearst.

By jcil |

Yes, the historic landslide is still being worked on and sadly Hwy 1 will not be open till the end of 2018, at best. But you can still drive as far as Salmon Creek (where there is a beautiful hike to a waterfall) but that's as far north as you can get on this epic road. 5 miles south of SC is Ragged Point which is still worth the trip for an overnight stay or just lunch on the deck. Beautiful place.

By BeeDubYVR |

When driving between Santa Barbara/San Luis Obispo to San Fran skip US 101 (inland) and take the stunningly beautiful Highway 1 along the coast. At times hugging the ocean and others hugging cliffs thousands of feet in the air this drive is not for the inexperienced or the faint of heart. Your reward is some of the best vistas on the planet.

Be sure to plan ahead as there are very limited gas and food options between SLO and Monterrey as we discovered when it was time for lunch. If you're impatient or in a hurry skip this route and head inland.

Otherwise, Highway 1 is your gateway to Hearst Castle, the amazing sight of elephant seals sunning on the beach, iconic bridges, McWay Falls, and some amazing beaches. Allow for more time than Google Maps indicates due to road construction and heavy traffic. Since our last drive 13 years ago this route has clearly been included in many tour books and guides. With so many people looking at the views (from inside our oustide their cars) pay special attention to inattentive drivers and pedestrians anywhere near pullouts.

Overall Morro Bay is a fun place to spend the day. It was 66°in July and foggy.. a very nice reprieve from triple digit weather. The seals and pelicans were were very noisy and fun to listen to. Lots of Restaurants of all types, knick knack shops, boutiques and some cool galleries. Although it was crowded on a sunday in July, we drove around a little bit and then found a great spot on the street 1/2 block from the shops and main street. If were ever in San Luis Obispo county we'll be sure to come here again.

Cayucas was a part of my wife's family vacation for many years. This was my first time, and I will go again...for sure. It is all about slowing down and enjoying simpler things. A wonderful experience.

All of Hwy. 1 in California is gorgeous. This particular part of the road has crashing waves, beautiful mountains and hills, and local wildlife. Great opportunity for photography. Bring a picnic and make a day of it

By Ronit4 |

Unforgettable experience. Breathtaking views. Lots of places to stop off and hike. Lots of marine wildlife. Can't wait to go back there again...

By AnneHHK |

We really loved driving Route 1 and there are many lovely places to stop and take pictures or even a long walk along the beach. Moonstone Beach in Cambria was particularly lovely. Be sure to bring some money and eat at the Sea Chest. It has great character, wine, and some of the best seafood you'll find. We also went to the beaches in San Simeon and were able to spot whales feeding which is an amazing sight to see.

By Monica S |

Am amazing drive especially when you luck out with great weather! Amazing views and sights can be found everywhere on Highway 1! Best drive I have been on in the US!

From elephant seals to zebras (yes, Zebras) to some of the most spectacular scenery the PCH is a bucket list item not to be missed. Sure, there are some curvy more dangerous areas to pay attention to but that's not what you're going to remember after the drive. The road closure has been re-opened through Big Sur as of July 2018 and you'll be amazed after each bend in the road at the next most beautiful vista you've ever seen. Take several days and stop along the way... life is an adventure and the PCH is a jewel.
