Dirty and a little scary

By SoHappyTogetherTN |

We had several hours to wait for our flight home, so our host at the Black Dolphin Inn suggested that we might enjoy walking around the shops in downtown Sanford.

Parking was easy to find. We arrived around lunchtime, and there were some people milling around the streets. There were several homeless people sleeping on benches and sitting on stoops. A couple of people followed me (I was walking with my kids). My husband stopped at an ATM, and was immediately approached by a woman standing on the sidewalk, aggressively asking for money.

It was difficult to choose a place for lunch because everything looked so dirty. It was a VERY hot day, so outdoor seating was not appealing. We finally settled on The Breezeway because of the menu, and because it looked clean based on the photos. It wasn't great, and we ended up going back to the car and just sitting in it for hours, waiting for our flight.

The downtown Sanford area is not a place I plan to return to! We love to visit quaint downtown areas, but this one has little to offer.

Nice Town

By cordyroy |

The downtown Sanford are is quite nice. Right on Lake Monroe and easily walkable. Pick up a map/guide to the various historic buildings to help you out. Lots of great info there. Cute looking cafes, shops etc. Even a local history museum. We would return.

Don't Miss

By Sandy G |

Sanford is truly old Florida. Brick streets, on street parking and tons of fun things to do. Restaurants, antique/art shops, farmers market on Saturday, Alive After Five once a month with food trucks galore. There is always something going on!

Many early 1900s buildings, dining, free parking and free downtown trolley

By Pnemiller |

Historical area has interesting attractions. Walking tour maps, local museums, early homes and buildings, restaurants and a long trail along lakefront. Placards along lake and on buildings explain history of the area.

Barbara Lee River Boat Cruise at Sanford Florida.

By Marilyn1343 |

Took the Barbara Lee Riverboat cruise from the St Johns River Port at Sanford. It is such a lovely town and a great place to visit. The port there is easy parking and the Barbara Lee is a great Lunch or Dinner experience. I have done with a group then with my son and daughter. Can't go wrong for a nice day out or a special celebration.

Walkable and lovely

By Worldgypsy72 |

The hometown feel of Sanford takes me back to a more simple time in life. A short distance from downtown is the waterfront.

Love Sanford great Antique Shops, beautiful waterfront riverwalk, restaurants, free trolley and more

By froggie93 |

Sanford is a very cute and fun town with lots to offer visitors of all ages. Saturdays there is a farmers market in the square, there is no shortage of restaurants to eat, pizza, Greek, German all kinds of offerings. Some venues have live music. There are antique stores and an art gallery and cute boutique shops that have unique items. There is also the beautiful Riverwalk which is a great area to walk and take in the waterfront and all the area has to offer. There are swings and there is a great park down there for the children. There is also a FREE Trolley that has different stops in the Downtown Sanford as well as to the SunRail station and AmTrack Auto train which is quite unique and will give visitors time to experience Downtown Sanford while visiting the area. The Free Trolley starts at Noon and runs Tuesday through Friday to connect with Sunrail with extended hours on Friday. FREE Trolley runs Saturdays and will stop at the SunRail train station even though no trains are currently running on SunRail on Saturdays.

Love the antique shops, restaurants, and friendly people everywhere

By June H |

When you plan to take the paddle boat cruise, be sure to go early and visit down town Sanford. There are so many unique shops and restaurants, antique shops, the streets are easily traveled, had no problem finding a parking spot, everywhere was clean and neat, shop owners were interesting to talk with and we brought back loads of unique and different things for our homes. This is a very intriguing, interesting, and relaxing place to just stroll and window shop.

Walking Downtown Sanfor

By Collverjr@gmail.com |

Sanford is a unique small town. The main street has lots of restaurants. All of which have excellent food. There is a very nice theater about a block off the main street. I highly recommend seeing downtown Sanford.

Oh god NO

By Coryswife26 |

This place is highly dangerous and is a hood place. Stay away. Too much crime, along this part of Sanford. Very very BAD.

Nice Downtown area to walk around

By KMH119 |

We visited downtown Sandford on Martin Luther King Day 2016.
Nice place to walk around with ample free parking. Most of the shops were closed when we visited but we enjoyed looking around anyway. There were several restaurants that were open for lunch. There was also a Historic Sandford visitors center which is worth stopping in.

Sanford...who knew?

By IMPEI |

Florida terminus of the Amtrack Autotrain, Sanford turned out to be not just a neat little town, but a community with an interesting history. While waiting for the train, we took the free shuttle into town, had lunch, checked out a great co-op art gallery and learned the history of this community at their visitor center/ community museum. All in all, worth the trip.

Better than on previous vidit

By 186400Caroline |

We came here many years ago and there was nothing to see or do. Pleasantly surprised this visit, lots of restaurants to choose from, a few shops. The buildings are lovely and each labelled with its history which is great for visitors. Plenty of free parking, worth a visit around a meal time .

Small town quiet atmosphere

By ANDY B |

Plenty of shops and eateries. After hours of meals and drinks in a cozy environment. Close to Lake Monroe keep the evening cool in the summer with local breezes.

Relaxing Throwback

By lbcinjax |

What a great little town to walk around. Brick paved streets, lots of unique shops and a scenic waterfront. We personally found a less well traveled restaurant; the Corner Cafe that offered a less touristy experience and then found a "dive bar:", the Alley which featured some great live music for what appeared to be mostly a local middle aged crowd.

I love my Sanford

By Veddy0 |

I've been living here for 19 years and I don't change it. This is a town full of history and beautiful people. It is one of the oldest cities in USA. The downtown has lots of activities, restaurants, bars and little antique shops. The riverwalk is so relaxing. The first Thursday of every month Sanford close 1st street to have a party

Good Spot for a Pub Crawl

By Joe M |

Downtown Sanford has become a nice stop for a pub crawl. They have several eclectic and friendly pubs that are much more than the typical corner bar. Everything is within staggering distance and parking is typically easy to find.

If you want to help out an obviously struggling area ...

By Nanine M |

I'm at a loss as to why downtown "historic" Sanford has so many high reviews. Perhaps all the shop owners and members of the Sanford Chamber of Commerce wrote them to try and boost the local economy. The "area" consists of about 4 blocks down 1st street and a short side street closed to vehicle traffic, that have been paved with bricks, I suppose to add some charm. There are a few more shops and restaurants four or five blocks south on Palmetto but it is not an inviting stroll. Much of the surrounding neighborhood feels abandoned. There are large overgrown empty lots and what appeared to be an abandoned grocery store. There were several bars that did not feel inviting if you weren't a local. The "waterfront" is essentially a marina that has a bait shop to wander through. There is nothing particularly interesting about the town or the area and brick-paved streets notwithstanding, it isn't even a little bit charming. Overall, downtown Sanford gives the impression of a reluctant host, forced for economic reasons to dress up and pretend to be something it isn't and doesn't particularly want to be.

Worth a day visit

By Flaqdiver |

Downtown Sanford is a small town on Lake Monroe with a river walk that borders the Lake and downtown area. Several blocks of original brown and red brick buildings line the streets that house nice eatery's and bars as well as some interesting antique shops. Spending a day strolling around the town, you get a glimpse of a historical Florida Town with a lot of history. There is almost always something to do. It seems like there is quite a bit of night life but Thursday's alive after five is worth the visit. The theater is vintage and worth catching a play. The Saturday market could use a few more vendors but shouldn't be missed. The history museum is a nice place to learn more of the town and area. A couple of bars have a good assortment of local craft beers. But just strolling along the river walk and around the marina with a coffee from the cafe is a winner too.

Downtown Sanford, FL

By vernonj863 |

The people were friendly and my hotel was convenient to shopping, restaurants, and several tourist attractions. The staff and food at the Cracker Barrel was excellent. I was made to feel welcome in Sanford, FL.

Town with alot of Friendly people

By BirthdayTribe |

There are many places to stop for beverages, shopping, listen to music and enjoy the clean town of Sanford. Be sure to check out Sanford Street and the Breezeway Bar- such friendly staff!!

Great little town!

By thesteevesgroup |

Downtown Sanford is a sweet little town. We drove through there just to see what's happening. They have a great park on the Lake Monroe with a splash pad and play equipment for the kids. Pavilions are around and it makes a great place for a family gathering.

The Rivership Romance leaves from the marina and gives a sight seeing tour and lunch or dinner, daily.

I recommend visiting.

Historical Sanford

By morex4 |

A beautiful pice of preserved history enjoyed starting on the brick streets of downtown Sanford! Start at the map along 1rst street to get a full grasp of the historical significance of the town. Once you have it all just walk for awhile. Walk along the river walk pathway and enjoy the water. Walk through the historical housing district adjacent to doe two to the north. You will be sure to find your favorites. Don't forget to stop for something to eat! Several amazing resreaurants await! To the east is historic Goldsboro, one of the first African-American communities founded. Next time we are through I hope the museum will be open. This community is one many kids read about in their history book. With Sanford as a home base you aspire 20 minutes from the manatees at blue springs state park, 20 minutes for UCF, and 30 min to the airport or Daytona Beach.

They have a flea market in Saturday morning lot of goid stuff

By mazzatheresa55 |

We visit the flea market weekly its a great for fresh produce. We like the marshmellow and ice cream place is great as well. Riverwalk pizza is a great lunch and you can walk for exercise along the riverwalk as well.

Loed strolling the streets and watching the mini golf set up to honor The Master's!

By Teacher20052013 |

Sanford has become a great place to meander and enjoy libations, fresh brews and great food. Come with family or friends and enjoy the wondrous downtown economic growth.

Eat shop stroll drink

By MaryFaith |

Sanford has a great historic downtown with lots of restaurants and cool art and clothing shops. You can go there with your kids or meet friends for drinks at one of the breweries. Pretty much any time of day is good to go except be aware that Monday a lot of the stores and shops are closed. Very best days to go are Thursdays for alive after five or even Saturdays when there's a farmers market. There are almost always shows at the rain dance Performing Arts Center and it's not unusual to see live music being performed.
Don't hesitate to wander off of 1st street for some antique and miscellaneous other shops. Sanford is kind of like St Augustine with a twist of Key West but not quite so touristy. Locals hail each other from across the street with friendly hellos. Lake Monroe has a beautiful waterfront area for bike riding or walking.

Cool places

By Teri J |

Quaint shops and good food! A nice compliment to the beautiful lake front! Truly Sanford is a hidden gem

Great place to people-watch, shop and eat

By Daniel K |

There are a wide variety of shops including antique, art galleries and bookstores. Quite a few restaurants offer outside seating and a few have live entertainment. Saturday offers a farmer's market in the square and there is an excellent German deli just off the square. A browser's delight awaits in the bookstores, antique/vintage shops and art galleries. Several bars serve wine and beer. The visitor's center offers restroom facilities and information as well as souvenirs.

A real Main Street in Florida!

By TommyBear |

Free street and lot parking, a lovely visitor center filled with handouts for walking tours, historical museum, shops, cafes...even a Farmers Market on Saturday. What's not to love?

Growing to a happening place

By RICHARD C |

If you have not been to the Downtown Sanford area in a while then you are in for a treat. So much to choose from! Micro breweries, ethnic restaurants, art galleries, shops and more. Then take a nice walk on the river front to wrap up the visit. Not even close to the place it was a couple years ago - how things change for the better!

Who knew?

By Lisa K |

I never knew what a charming place this was! Friendly locals, great places to eat and live music abound! We came for the Sanford Food Tour and learned what a fun place this is to visit. We'll be back!

Very friendly.

By Consuella Y |

What a cute town. Full of it's own history. And nice little shops.

Nothing beets seeing a town that clearly takes pride in their appearance. Pretty landscaping and since it's autumn there was decorations for that too. Wish I had taken a picture of the huge bat mad from hay. Very cute.

Our dessert shot from The Corner Café was delicious.

Festival

By Jo B |

Passed through Downtown Sanford for their festive season food galore celebration. Had too much to eat that day.

Depression glass at Sanford Civic Center

By barbed607897 |

Although the civic center looks small, it held a good group of depression glass vendors. I found lots of my pattern as well as that of my nieces. Great show!

Sanford and fun

By Dillon M |

I just moved to Sanford and feel compelled to show some love for my new hood because the locals couldn’t have been nicer or more welcoming. I’m not too hyped on Orlando, but I am all about Sanford. It’s basically old meets new. A stellar contrast. Lake Monroe is a sight to behold and downtown is wildly eclectic. Extremely historic but lovingly maintained. Between all the independently owned shops and eateries, regular events, and an infrastructure that doesn’t make it impossible to get around on foot, Sanford is a mess of Florida fun. Warm weather + cool people = paradise.

vibrant

By lisadare24 |

downtown area is great. fun place to walk around, shop, and eat. we went to the farmer's market. the vendor's are friendly and the merchandise is priced fairly.

This area has been revitalized in the past few years. Nice to visit.

By ReMuAthensOhio |

Lots of interesting little shops to visit and an old book store with lots of seating to relax and peruse. Easy parking most of the time. Library is located near here too.

2016-41 Very Enjoyable Afternoon

By mountain22 |

Sanford, FL., formerly known as Celery City, is located next to breathtaking Lake Monroe. This historic town offers among others; art galleries, restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. Local business sponsor several events during the year, such as; art festivals, Mardi Gras party, and pints and paws and these are only they few that I can remember. On the third Saturday of each month, they have street parties and food trucks. There's a very nice paved lighted walk along the lake, including a Marina. Go and enjoy it, you'll be glad you did.

Beautiful, historic downtown

By Rita B |

Artsy, historic, modern, and stunning all in one package. I'm super amazed at how the homes and history have been kept. It makes this town even more beautiful. We definitely want to come back and explore more.

Old town Sanford

By kertOne |

Nice and clean..nice sidewalk cafes with most with excellent food.

Farmers Market is clean and good veggies but it is Florida so tomatoes lack the flavor of good soil.

Great shops

By muffin46 |

Lot of old shops, brick roads on the Lake, easy to spend hold day, or days their there walking and looking or and buying lo

Saturday is hopping

By daddyxl |

We were Downtown during German Spring Fest and it was awesome! Lots of vendors selling cool stuff, plenty of places to get a drink, and lots of fun shops to browse! We will be back!

Interesting Downtown

By Fredo B |

Over the years this little quaint downtown has grown to be more of a community feel type of downtown that is warm and inviting. It is not overly crowded. There are lots of nice eateries and bars to visit. There seems to always be some sort of event taking place. There are great little activities that happens throughout the year that just about every bar and restaurant participate such as the couch race, taste of downtown Sanford, St. Patty's Day, etc.

A bit more laid-back....

By RICART75 |

Admittedly, the main reason we visit downtown Sanford during our Orlando stays, is to dine at Hollerbachs restaurant and/or pick up desserts at the German Market (love those Nutella creme rolls, bee sting croissants, etc.)
While there, however; we also enjoy exploring the shops, strolling the streets and spending time by Lake Monroe.
This is a wonderful way to experience the side of Florida that is a bit more laid-back; and not quite so mega tourist/attraction oriented.

Lunch

By AmarilisLendof |

As a new resident I love to explore. Downtown samdford has several antique shops, nice river front and different restaurants. We have visited a few but none has become a favorite. However this area has lots of potential and in the future it will become a favorite spot

Beautiful area

By Scott2806 |

Loved the farmers market and all the shops. People are so nice and friendly. Colonial restaurant makes the best breakfast in town and they serve it all day long!

Very Historic

By DoctorEd711 |

For a great and relaxing time there will be nothing better to go and see ancient buildings and sit by the lake to meditate n relax. It also have great restaurants and cobblestones streets b

Bummed

By Sydney J |

Went with family to wander thru the downtown stores. Bummed that there are hardly any antique shops left to browse. Tons of restaurants and one overpriced store selling items that are old, but without the rustic flavor of old Sanford.

Fun and vibrant..

By Jaymes P |

There's lots of attractions on the downtown boardwalk. Plenty of restaurants and old florida-ish style architecture. Friendly people most of all. Great for a family walk. Parking is decent.

A Walk Down Main Street

By bowiejohn2015 |

Downtown Sanford FL has an interesting mix of shops and restaurants with ample free parking. Sidewalks are comfortably wide for speedy walkers or leisurely strollers.

Great Downtown!

By Joan F |

Sanford has really come a long way. Downtown has so many different things to do. During the day there is the Splash Park and the playground. There is also basketball courts. It is right on Lake Monroe. There is an exercise path to follow or you can just sit and watch the lake on the new bench swings. There are great restaurants and bars. Lots of art and antiques. Come spend the day. You can rent pavilions in the park for parties or just pick a spot and have a BBQ. There are plenty of things to do.

It continues to get nicer. Definitely worth a visit or two

By sjhokie |

We've been visiting for 5 or 6 years once or twice per year, and have enjoyed watching the rebirth of this nice little city. It's on the shores of Lake Monroe, but there's really not much to do around the lake. First Avenue, and Sanford Avenue are teeming with interesting places, and there never seems to be much of a challenge finding free parking, although, I could see that changing soon...

Shops

By dldngm |

We often stroll the main street with Antique shops and the Book Store before headed to dinner at Hollenbachs German Restaurant.

Nothing much but dive bars.

By CultureFinder |

A few ok restaurants and one good German restaurant. A bunch of bars with very little else to attract you to this location. Ok walk and bike path along lake front.

downtown

By Shirley C |

we walked the streets and they have some interesting shops if you are into antiques we atr at a small cafe called brrezeway

Charming renovations make old Sanford new again

By Rene0928 |

Old downtown Sanford has been renewing itself. Little boutiques, great restaurants, weekend craft fairs and farmers markets, escape rooms and concerts make this pretty area worth a visit! Sanford is an old city with lots of real Florida charm. Just park for free and start walking. Enjoy the pretty homes and moss covered 100 year old trees. Stop in the library, visit a very cozy coffee shop, or have a craft beer outside in the wonderful weather. Did I mention that Lake Monroe is only 2 blocks away?

It boasts a lovely marina, a little water fountain park for the children, basket ball courts and covered areas for picnics. When the water is calm you can count the alligators too :).

There is a beautiful paddle boat that offers cruises and waterfront, affordable dining.

Not much to see.

By Laurie C |

We visited on a Sunday, most of the quaint stores were closed. Based on that fact, there was nothing that made me want to go back for another attempt. Sorry, Sanford, I was not impressed.

Small Town atmosphere with something for everyone

By Mike A |

Restaurants, Bars, Breweries, Shops, Art, Waterfront walkway, great parks.See Sanford365 for what is happening this week

Sanford is really making an effort to become user friendly

By AlanBartlett |

Over the past years, Sanford has come a long way. It is definitely upgrading the downtown area. The entire feel has changed. People are out and about and the pedestrian crosswalk upgrades make this a people-friendly area. I am impressed with the changes. BRAVO

A bunch of bars...

By Stacey G |

I thought there would be a lot of different kinds of merchants here, just a bunch of bars with a handful of antique shops.

Beautiful and full of history

By Elshoff5 |

This is a destination for anyone who wants to get away from the ordinary. You will find something to do for everyone in the family. Great food, entertainment, friendly people!

Pleasantly surprised

By Mike B |

Well, not totally surprised - I read the reviews here first. Wife and I wanted to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather yesterday (Sunday, Nov 26, 2017). Downtown Sanford was never on our list of must-see things, but over the last several years I've been reading about their amazing re-do. The area near the river is gorgeous - a nice big marina with a few bars/restaurants, and just a block or 2 to the brick-street downtown with many more restaurants and lots of stores, including a great artist co-op and some great antique shops. The visitor center has restrooms and plenty of information too.

Why I Moved to This City!

By Nancy R |

When I came to Central Florida in 2010, I decided to live close to my job--which meant anywhere from Maitland to Sanford. I fell in love with Sanford's funky downtown and ended up buying a house here for that reason.

The downtown area is on the waterfront with one-of-a-kind stores, art galleries, and restaurants. It's dog-friendly--a requirement for me!--and the people are so friendly. There's an amazing bookstore, sidewalk cafes, old brick buildings with fire escapes (not the norm in Forida!). Houses in the area date back 100 years, with many Craftsman bungalows. There are parades on the major holidays and at Christmas, the downtown stores decorate to the max. There's live theatre, the Love Your Shorts film festival in February, monthly street parties ("Alive After Five") and monthly art festivals.

I've lived here for four years and spending a Saturday downtown is still my favorite way to relax.

A Good Place to have a Wander!

By birdwriter7 |

Sanford is an eclectic town with a lakeside marina, and an eclectic range of shops including arts and crafts, antiques and furniture, boutiques, beauty salons, bars and restaurants. There is also a modern shopping mall, a short car journey away from the downtown area. We went on a Sunday so many of the downtown shops were closed, but some of the bars and restaurants were open. On a Sunday, it offers the opportunity for a relaxed stroll, and something to do after boating on the lake. If you want more action, go on a Saturday.

Wish we had more time

By photodette |

Got to the Autotrain early so we had some time to spend in Sanford (which is maybe a mile or so from the station).

It's a pretty town with lots of nice, quaint shops. We spent a little time on the main street and had coffee in one of the restaurants. We spent most of our time on the RiverWalk. I'm looking forward to visiting again!

Awesome to live or visit

Sanford a unique quiet town just north or Orlando. Home af a great German Restaurant- Hollerbachs Willow tree and any good craft beer Breweries.

Clean, stylish and friendly area. Cool thrift stores and good eats, the view of the lake is the best in central Florida!
Good place to visit !!

Beautiful Waterfront/Relaxing Afternoon

By Barbara W |

After visiting the Central Florida Zoo in Sanford, my friend and I headed to downtown Sanford (about 4 miles away) for a bite to eat. We discovered a beautiful waterfront park and lots of places to eat, many with patio seating. We ate at the Breezeway (about a block away from the marina) and then had a drink at the St. John's Steak and Seafood Restaurant on the back deck overlooking the water. It was an idyllic day.

Quaint and interesting

By Culture64053022118 |

This town has a very nice vibe to it, very walk-able and pleasant. Lots of good restaurants and shops as well as local historical sites. Spend some time down on the shore--a well maintained park with monuments to Veterans all the way back to the Revolutionary War. We'd recommend spending time downtown and staying away from the Seminole Shopping Center--a place so big and yet emptying out, as so many malls have recently.

During Christmas break

By toots02 |

Lovely town, well worth a visit. The restaurants that we ate at are not listed, definitely try The Breezeway for dinner, sit in the actual Breezeway and the Corner Cafe, for lunch or if dinner, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Great service and food at both.

Historic Town

day trip to Sanford

It's a small town north of Orlando. Has a lot of restaurants and local businesses. However, most of the local businesses are closed on Mon and some are also closed on Tues.

SO MUCH POTENTIAL

By Chaviquita |

I wish this place will get more ideas to attract tourist. The port it’s very nice but lacks of permanent security. Overall will be a nice place to hand out more but I felt scare by myself.

Nice Little Town with River Views

By barymad |

Great little town for a walk or a quick bite before boarding the Auto Train. Quaint shops and small town feel. Brick paved streets and many covered side walks.

Small town feel that I love!

By Anders6369 |

Downtown Sanford is a great place with lots of cool things to see and experience. There are parks nearby and pathways to walk along the Riverwalk if you have kids. My wife and I also enjoy experiencing the great restuarants in this area and the cool shops. Downtown Sanford is slowly becoming a Micro- Brewery destination too with some that are opened and some opening soon. I would highly recommend coming and experiencing downtown during the farmers market on Saturday mornings when everything in the area is open!

Shopping at the Square

By davidsH8113GT |

Great little market place. We found some gifts for the ones that matter and the people there were very nice. Prices were good and if you ask they will make deals.

Artsy

By Sarai |

I loved how before and after 5 this place is a totally different experience. Found an art gallery with an upstairs and ended up buying art, several cool bars.

This pretty small town highlights art galleries, restaurants and antique shops.

By aufish |

I live in the Sanford area, so am very familiar with this little town. There are some high quality restaurants and art galleries catering to the middle class. There are several, antique stores left; there used to be more. The river walk is very scenic.
You can spend several pleasant hours here.

Worth an afternoon!

By The World is My Oyster |

We actually did a two hours bike tour of Sanford on Saturday, and really enjoyed the old architectural design of most of the buildings and houses. It somewhat reminded me a little bit of Savanah or Charleston!

Small, quaint downtown

By James L |

This little downtown has nice shopping and stores to browse through. Plus one of the best German Restaurants in the USA. Parking is plentiful and free. Thanks

Nice walk through farmer's market on Saturday; very cool watching July 4th fireworks from the banks of Lake Norman

By Deeirish |

Downtown has the potential to improve a lot - for a Saturday afternoon there wasn't a lot to do - but what is there and open is interesting and fun.

Love the "Alive After Five".

By Wanda J |

Try to be in Sanford on the 2nd Thursday of the month to attend "Alive After Five" for the best 'street party' ever. We enjoyed 'Alive' better when it cost $5.00 if one desired to get the 'samples'. There were more vendors and more people attended. We are not sure how 'Alive' actually works now and when inquiring with other attendees, they don't know either. The music is great.

Shooing, food and water front view

By Pyramidion |

Waiting for the Amtrak auto train? Take advantage of the free shuttle to downtown Sanford for a lunch or shopping. Sanford is an attractive central Florida town offering antique shops, clothing boutiques and several decent eating spots. Beats sitting in the train station fighting boredom until boarding. Be sure to check in first. If driving through the area it's worth a stop but Mt. Dora, nearby offers more attractions. Parking is ample in both locations.

Exploding in great ways

By J D |

Downtown Sanford is being revitalized in so many ways. The new restaurants and stores are literally exploding by the week. Just a stroll down there will show so many new locations. From antique stores, to the amazing Art Galleries, to incredible and diverse bars and restaurants. The Riverwalk is amazing for just a stroll.

The Alley

By Mzkiddy |

Great live music and good drinks. You maybe invited to join in a jam session. Fun and friends will enjoy the atmosphere located downtown Sanford. Nice place to meet up.

Beautiful and safe walking area night and day!

By Woodstock51 |

We stayed at Munroe's so we could enjoy the neighborhood and it was terrific. So nice to be able to walk at night in a strange city and feel so safe. Also nice to be able to have a drink with dinner and not worry about driving home. Many interesting shops stay open in the evening for your browsing pleasure; so much nicer than a mall!

Becoming a "hot spot"

By Ed H |

Sanford is a real gem that is still relatively undiscovered. There are excellent restaurants like Hollerbach's, Smiling Bison, Christos and Zorba's plus an array of pubs ranging from brews to bistro's. We often go down and spend hours just wandering along First Street (the main drag) or taking a stroll down to the waterfront. It's got small-town charm with history to boot.

Downtown Sanford - under rated hot spot

By Manny G |

Historic, awesome atmosphere, diverse, great eats, live music - I can go on and on. I've lived in Sanford for over 10 years and have seen the downtown area get better and better. Just a great atmosphere for a date night, a night with the boys or girls, etc. they have everything for everyone .. whether it's an open mic night, a game night with some drinks, a brewery with great food and live music, german, italian, mexican jamaican, greek - They have a live theatre, a walkway through the lake .. i mean, i can keep going and going .. Lots to do, see and be part of .. I no longer go to winter park or downtown Orlando .. It's all right here and i would highly recommend

Nice place to spend a leisurely afternoon

By MyTwoCent s |

We love it when we have an opportunity to spend some time in downtown Sanford. The city has done a good job of revitalizing the area, and there are lots of good restaurants and shopping here now. We especially like the boutiques and antique stores. Window shop if you'd like, but you might just find a treasure. Nice art galleries, too. Good place to Christmas shop for unusual gifts. Support your local community!

Wow, all kinds places to eat and great places to visit. If you can't find a place to eat in this section of town then you are not looking. Can't wait until we are back in town to try other places.

Quaint Florida Town

By 60SUED60 |

From its brick streets, to its park like settings within the town, to its old time store fronts to the water’s edge, this town will amaze you. There are multiple breweries/restaurants at the east end of town & the town center is filled with occupied shops, which is a rarity within its own, now a days. A nice place st stroll around, have a beer or glass of wine, take a boat ride and have dinner

Deserted / boarded up

By Iris V |

It's deserted and most shops are boarded up. Has a really shabby outlook now.. Even the neighbouring marina looks shabby..

Quaint, charming little city

By Lucy C |

So much fun to discover the pubs and shops and marvel at the unique "old Florida" architecture. Residents were all friendly and helpful. Can't wait to return; so much to do in the area and love the non-touristy vibe.

Quick look

By Gatorpat1 |

Historic downtown. The evening I rode through just checking it out, there was some kind of activity and there were people strolling the streets, sitting on benches, the restaurants were packed and the Riverwalk was busy. Apparently, they have this type of thing at least once a month and it looks like everyone was enjoying themselves.

GREAT TOWN

By Judy M |

This is one of my go to places to take visitors. I love the shops, restaurants, art shop and overall vibe. There is something for everyone. On Saturday, I have gone to their farmer's market. It is also close to Lake Monroe if you want to stroll along the lake. Next time I go I hope to do lunch on the boat cruise.

Wow, what a change

By Rick H |

I started my first job in downtown Sanford, back when the zoo was on Park Ave. and the lake. Now, many years later, I returned for a visit and what an exciting change. Downtown is filled with excellent restaurants, a brewery, lots of nice shops. It has a pretty active night life as well. The historic district looks great.

Some nice downtown restaurants

By Orlando-Mike2 |

A nice variety of dining to choose from. Nice antique mall with many local artists. Easy to get around and close parking.

Sanford is Taking off!

By Scott G |

Sanford Florida is making a name for itself as a fun time destination! From great Restaurants such as Hollerbach’s Willow Tree, Mr. Z’s, Buster’s Bistro, The Jailhouse and many other great eats to great bars, breweries and entertainment locals!

Just walking around town and taking in the sights, scenes and enjoying the atmosphere of the downtown area is a treat!

We find ourselves down here at least a couple times a month if not more!

Check it out! Spend a day! Make some memories or new friends!

Nice little downtown area

By jwfla |

It has a nice little downtown area but is mostly antique shops. Good dining options are limited. By far the most well known and best restaurant is the Willow Tree German restaurant. Highly rated and always good. If you go down Sanford Ave a few blocks try Busters Bistro. Good food and beer. No domestic beer only Belgian. Crepes were excellent

By Amber0106 |

This is an eclectic little town that has wonderful historic markers on the buildings. It has a youthful, artsy vibe & there is plenty to do in a small walking area.

History

By mskathiej |

This little town has more history than moest. It was called Celery City for many years due to the many farms that had celery fields. It is the Seminole County seat. Wonderful Lake Monroe provides a view that is breathtaking.

A Nice Place to Spend a Day

By Paul S |

Downtown Sanford has it all. Parks, Lakefront, eclectic shops, restaurants and a Brewery Mile. The bars and restaurants range from older and classic to new and fun. The Zoo is not far and fishing is also close by

Quaint Historic Downtown Sanford Gets Better Every Year

By glomarrone |

If you haven’t visited Historic Downtown Sanford in years, you will be surprised at all the changes. Many visitors come to Sanford just for the Auto Train or to take a boat ride on the Sternwheeler Barbara-Lee. Sanford is much more than that although I have taken the Auto Train many times and enjoyed numerous paddleboat rides on Lake Monroe & the St John’s River.

Now I come mainly to enjoy delicious German American food and music at Hollerbach’s Willow Tree on 1st Street and to visit the Sanford’s Open Air Marketplace. I never miss stopping at Hollerbach’s Magnolia Square Market and usually find something to bring back home with me. This past weekend it was a Giant Bavarian Pretzel. I enjoyed a beer tasting in the Market, also. I have attended several performances at the Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center (Ritz Theatre.) Just recently, I saw a wonderful production of Footloose. All the plays that I saw were well done. The fairly recent renovations in the theater are lovely. A stroll along 1st Street is delightful and one can always find something unusual to buy in the numerous small shops. Last week, we stopped in Centennial Park to look through the vendors’ wares on display.

There are too many restaurants, coffee shops, bars, shops and micros breweries to mention but pick up a copy of the Fall 2019 Visitors Guide, which includes a map of the area and find the ones that interest you the most. Stop in at the Welcome Center to get your baring. If you have time, take the free trolley with nine stops in downtown also going out to the zoo, Sunrail Station and to the Auto-Train. If you prefer, rent a bike at Pedal Driven Co on Park Ave. There is plenty of free long-term parking around town, too. A walk along Riverwalk is not to be missed.

If you need more of an incentive to visit, there are many events throughout the year such as Oktoberfest, Oct. 11-13, Taste of Sanford, Oct. 28, West First Friday every 1st Fri. of the month, Sanford Art Walk and Sanford Food Truck Fiesta, 3RD Sat every month, Sanford Block Party, 4th Sat., Alive After 5 celebrating themes such as Mardi Gras, St Patrick’s Day, Chili Cook-Off. If you enjoy seeing old movies, check out Movie Classics at the Ritz Theatre, $5 a ticket every 6 weeks. There is always something happening in the Historic Sanford Downtown area.

PEACEFUL

By 402mcameron |

This is a very family oriented area. Lots to do for the whole family. A lot of outdoor restaurants with pretty views of the area.

Always something going on

By mzbook |

We have recently moved to the area and are enjoying attending the events downtown. The Art Festival was great. Christmas celebration was quaint and sweet. Being situated on Lake Monroe adds to the diversity of things to do in Sanford.

Don't know how they do it...

By Nancy R |

But the good people of the downtown area come up with some of the most entertaining, memorable, really fun ideas.

I've reviewed Downtown Sanford before but I'm reviewing again based on the fun stuff that happens there. Yesterday I went to Sofas and Suds, what MUST be the premier couch-racing venue in Central Florida. Merchants from the downtown area bought couches (yes, a specific brand and size restrictions in place, they take their couch-racing quite seriously in these parts!), fitted them with wheels, decorated them, and fielded a team of 4-5 people to push and one to ride on the couch. The couch races were huge fun. We spent the afternoon at Buster's Bistro rooting on the racers and enjoying live entertainment. While this was the only event of the week I participated in, the couch race was held on the final day of Sanford Beer Week. I missed the Bad At Business BeerFest, which apparently included copious samples of free beer from the many microbreweries in Sanford. While I am not a big beer drinker or connoisseur, I am always drawn to passionate people--and Sanford has a very passionate beer presence!

I've also attended Sanford's Live After Five event, which is held monthly. It's a big street party with different theme each month. The mood is always mellow and fun, with vendors selling cool stuff and people in a great mood milling around the downtown. Have yet to go to the Friday Art Walk, again held monthly, but I look forward to it.

Come on up to Sanford! It's fun!

Nice old times downtown.

By eL Dude' |

The wife and I picked up some friends from the airport around dinner time so we headed downtown for some food turned out they were having so e sort of 5 o'clock after work festival. There were several food trucks and shops to see.

Nice historic walk

By GoingFarFarAway |

A few older buildings with plenty of plaques throughout the city explaining the history and people of earlier days. Not too crowded and the streets are kept clean and tidy.

Quaint historical Town with Lots to Offer

By Mercedes M |

I live on the outskirts of Sanford, closer to Lake Mary and I can tell you this little city and it's downtown area is well worth exploring! All within walking distance, I can personally recommend Hollerbach's Willow Tree Cafe for authentic German Cuisine. Or sit outside and enjoy lite dining and local talent at the Tin Lizzy Tavern. There are lots of antique and unique art stores worth browsing as well. Take a walk along the "Riverwalk Trail" which boarders beautiful Lake Monroe.... don't let the word "trail" fool you, it's a nice sidewalk with plenty of places to sit and reflect.

Great Homey, Friendly Place

By RShadowens |

This is probably one of the best kept secrets in Florida! The downtown area is just a few blocks long, but packed in here are shops, art galleries, and great places to eat. Just admiring the old buildings is worth the trip; but the food makes it a fantastic outing!

beautiful Sanford

By Melvin P |

The marina riverwalk is absolutely breath taking, the joy of seeing locals fishing and the birds and ducks around the little pond, the brick roads are so historical. very happy place

Lots to do and see in this small city

By Nanci R |

Love downtown Sanford. Super shops, a beautiful Tea Room, lots of bars and restaurants, antiques, a marshmallow store and Bitters and Brass- a beautiful, beautiful step-back-in-time bar with, albeit pricey, but fascinating drinks prepared by really cool bartenders, like Chris(I think that is his name). And all very walkable with great parking and a beautiful lakefront a block from everything.

casual family night out

By Patricia D |

Was pleasantly surprised at how Sanford Downtown has made an amazing change. Thee restarsunts and entertainment venues look interesting and fun. An assortment of choices for everyone. We enjoyed The District restaraunt on this recent visit but we are planning to come again on a Saturday to try some other interesting restarsunts.
Well done Sanford...you got it all going on!!!

Wonderful area....

By RICART75 |

We stopped in town several times during our 4 week Orlando stay; whenever passing through the area.
We spent one pleasant day enjoying the architecture, shops, trolley, dining and waterfront area. This is a wonderful place to visit for a day (or several); and have a relaxing and more local Florida experience.
Return visits, for us, were highly influenced by the Magnolia Square Market's offerings (especially the Nutella Creme roll).

Disappointing

By Kathy S |

A number of businesses have closed their storefronts. We went on a Monday. Unfortunately, a number of very nice art related stores/galleries are closed on Mondays. 😕 There are plenty of restaurants to choose from and the downtown has several nice antique stores. The downtown has lots of potential and I hope they are able to fill the empty storefronts with businesses.

A cute little stretch of old town

By amber1027 |

Nice brick streets through part of town. A nice central plaza with a fountain. Several good shops, cafes and restaurants along the stretch.

Getting Better Monthly

By George H |

I spent a whole day getting to know Sanford and it was a nice get away from ALL the traffic and crowds else where in Orlando

See for Yourself

By Michael G |

We moved to Sanford, Florida just over a year ago and are quite pleased with our decision. Sanford is a historic quaint town of businesses, small shops, art galleries, restaurants, bars, coffee shops and craft breweries located on the banks of Lake Monroe. The town is vibrant and growing with a number of new businesses either recently opened or scheduled to open soon.

It's easy to walk around and parking is both plentiful and free. The Chamber of Commerce and local businesses sponsor a number of events throughout the year to include a Mardi Gras party, Pints and Paws, Sanford Art Festival and the Sofa Races to name a few. They also have monthly events that include Alive After 5, Forth Friday-Sanford Art Walk, First Saturday Street Parties and a food truck event on the third Saturday of each month.

Sanford offers something for everyone and I encourage you to come and check it our for yourself.

Nice market on Saturday

By Greg W |

We walked around and found some nice shops and there was a open market on Saturday. Very nice afternoon.

Delightful main street in historic district. Great for food and nightlife

By smilerkevin61 |

Stayed over in Sanford after a long haul flight from the UK. The historic district, especially Main Street, is a real delight. Lots of lovely old buildings from the days of the railroad in the 19th Century. Good bars and restaurants, many with live music at the weekends. Buzzing atmosphere, including the locals showing off their restored classic cars, hot rods and muscle cars. Riverside walk to see good examples of modern civic architecture, and the odd large alligator in the marina!

We love the First street of Sanford, Florida

By saisriorl |

This is a great place to hang out on a Weekend.

They have real historic in the Sanford district...they state Historic -here you can really see it. The North Atlantic ocean on the side is so beautiful.

Enjoyable Afternoon

By C R |

Downtown Sanford has turned into a nice little town to stroll on a nice afternoon. Saturday's there is a small farmers/craft market to go through and just walking down the street to do a little window shopping or browsing in the stores is fun. Discoering how much it has changed has been a nice surprise.

Sanford Downtown 1st Street

By Tammy T S |

Very quaint area of Sanford with lots of little shops and sidewalk eateries. The park along the Lake was very nice and relaxing. Enjoyed an afternoon walk along the lake.

Saturday of routes at Sanford

By Tour610630 |

The town of Sanford is small and full of charisma. Its main street is surrounded by antique shops, restaurants, barbershop as in the old days, bookstore of used books at a low cost and as much as the market on Saturdays, has a very peculiar art gallery. Each artist has his studio office where they receive clients and work. A nice town to spend an afternoon.

Picturesque small town with nice restaurants and shops

By Don P |

This is a very picturesque small town established in 1887 with redone brick paving on the main road to give it an old time feel. There are an number of nice restaurants and shops to browse through. Great for strolling after a good meal.

Doesn't open until 11

By Graham S |

We went first thing in the morning (0830) and apart from a number of joggers along the water it was shut! But that wasn't a problem because we got to see the whole place in 90 minutes without visiting any shop or restaurant. Great to walk along the waters edge and sit on the rocking chairs. We then moved onto Orlando and that was quite similar so we were back in Davenport by lunchtime and it has been a nice, quiet hassle free morning

Day and Night

By Jim G |

Sanford is known mostly as the terminus for the Amtrak auto-train, and has very little going for it beyond that. Its a small Southern city that is too small for any skyscrapers, too poor for any big museums, too close to major Florida tourist attractions to support its own, yet too far to be a convenient rest stop. Most of the city is filled with unattractive small-time industrial/commercial businesses and modest homes. But there are two areas worth seeing. The first is the lakefront. A very nice park runs all along the South shore of Lake Monroe, and is a pleasant place for a daytime stroll, picnic, fish, whatever. There is ample parking on the street, and its well maintained. The second spot is the historic center of the city, where a small collection of bars and clubs provide a variety of nighttime entertainment options. They are friendly and usually quite lively places to spend the evening. .

Window Shopping and dinner

By Charlie F |

Visited downtown Sanford,Florida September 19,2016 with my wife, sister and her husband. We went into several of the local antique shops and stores located along the Main Street and ate at the German Cafe. There is also a river walk and Marina with several restaurants and pizza parlors nearby. Once a month usually on a Thursday night the streets are closed and the food trucks and local craftsmen come out on the streets. This is a very fun atmosphere.

Love the downtown!

By Debbie D |

How charming! Cobblestone and brick streets, loads of restaurants and shops. Really loved it. Wish we had more time to explore!

A typical small town Main Street

By bradyboy2 |

Spent an hour walking into some of the stores on Main Street
There were a number of restaurants and several antique shops
The streets were clean

Nice little town

By indigo40 |

Sanford downtown is very quaint and has some nice shops. Some of the stores are closed on Mondays. Bought some unusual things that I would not have found at home. It's a pleasant time and very clean.

Love our town

By zwaters004 |

Our town is awesome! So much community and people that care!!! There are always events going on and it is family friendly!

Very nice except..

By FLORIDAHEAT_8 |

Very nice except for a cadre of homeless/mentally ill zombies roaming the area day and night. If the city had any sense (which they don't) they would have police on horses or on bikes permanently assigned to the area,

Relaxing and Enjoyable

By SirKnightii |

This is an area to walk and relax. The scenery varies enough to make it interesting. There are swings for those who want to sit around and view things or rest up. There are different types of food places/restaurant in the historic area that allows you wonderful variety.

Nice stroll

By Patty B |

Downtown Sanford is nice walk around. Plenty of restaurants and nice shops. Has a nice atmosphere and mix of shops and eateries

So many restaurants!!!

By William S |

If you are looking for great food, this is the place. Or, simply the best fried baloney sandwich I have ever eaten at the down home style Colonial Room. There are plenty of neat stores to browse in, a Blues club, ghost tours, and a performing arts theater. Don't forget the Sanford Av. section. It is just as full of great eats as is downtown.

A hidden weekend gem

By Fulfillment16 |

We've lived a few miles from downtown Sanford for a few years now and had never been there during the evening until last weekend. We were hoping to see some nice Christmas lights, but there wasn't much of that. However, the scene was lively and we didn't realize how many restaurants and local mom and pop places there were down there. We've committed to stopping down there on weekends to check some of the food out.

Best for Walk with kids and family as a whole.

By BzekeilaM |

It's a perfect place for long walks with children . The marina and the many restaurants give you the family ambiance families look forward.

Love it on a Sunday!

By KenmareLisa |

This is a wonderful place for your family on a Sunday. They have a farmers market right in the center of town with plenty of casual restaurants that are family friendly. Also located directly behind the town center is a boulevard on the water which is beautiful!!

A walk along the Boardwalk

By Greg C |

Very nice taking a stroll along the boardwalk, looking at the lake and all the boats at the marina. Nice and clean with plenty of benches to sit and relax. I enjoyed it very much, it has a good relaxed vibe.

Shopping

By Lorna H |

I go to downtown sanford all the time. Live 20 blocks away go to farmers market. Shop in stores. Go to Christos. Go to colonial room for breakfast. Attend plays at Wayne densch theatre. Like the new restaurant st Johns river steak and seafood by the river. Have been on the Barbara Lee paddle boat twice. I love sanford. It's quiet and lovely by the river. Also the Riverwalk pizza place I have been to maybe 59 times at least. Alive after five is nice too.

Beautiful historical place

Sanford has a lot history if you go down there go too the museum and the view at the marina is beautiful

Always something going on - food trucks, farmers market, live music. A great place to stroll & Pokémon hunt!

A Nice Little Quaint Town.

By TRAVELdglobenow |

What a pleasant surprise! This town was quaint with lots to offer. We were in the area for a canoe race so we took the time to explore after the race. The road was made of red bricks. There were lots of shops in old buildings. We drove to the Taste of Sanford location but we were short of time so we opted to eat at a German restaurant downtown not too far from the beautiful lake. The drive through the area was very nice. It was not that far from Orlando.

Hidden Gem of Florida

By curtis5281 |

This city is amazing. Charm plus culture with bars employing authentic German and Belgian recipes, to the trendy and hipster bars. Craft beers and nice walking distances.

Nice place to visit.

By Patricia E |

Small town atmosphere. Located on the lake. Nice place to take a long walk or visit the park. Great restaurants.

Nice area for a walk or bike ride

By btbolt |

This area is much better than it used to be. For about a mile you have a beautiful historic area great for walking, riding a bike, etc. There's also a nice lakeside stretch on lake Monroe. The downtown Sanford area is small but quaint. There are some little gems here and there including a great little antiques dealer.

Charming Right On The Lake

Where is everybody ?

By Laurielovesnewmexico |

Found myself in Sanford by default....was supposed to fly out of St.Petersberg and Allgiant Airline screwed up so had to drive 2 1/2 hrs away to Sanford/ Orlando Airport. Had a day to spend in Sanford, went into the tourist center in the historic area of town & was told about a soup event in town which sounded like fun! However it was like a ghost town ...hardly anyone around except for a few city workers & a man asking for spare change!
The marina area is nice but again no one around in the middle of the day...kinda eerie!

Alive after five, great time.

By CharlieMConley |

We lucked out while visiting the sanford area. Alive after five was happening as we arrived in sanford.ain st is closed off and local vendors set up booths and local restaurants and bars have specials and lots of entertainment. Great food, music and a fun time.

Historic charming downtown with a twist..

By NorthOrlandoFun |

Downtown Sanford is a charming downtown filled with delightful art galleries and delectable cafes and restaurants. The Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center is a local theater that offers scheduled live performances, that was a lot of fun. Afterwards, some tantalizing homemade marshmallows and ice cream at Wondermade hit the spot. Love it!

Beautiful Riverwalk

By Karen T |

Hubby and I decided to take a stroll after our St John's luncheon cruise before heading home, which is about 1 1/2 hours away. The Riverwalk runs along the St John's river and the scenery is breath taking. We strolled a wee bit downtown where there are many stores and restaurants. Overall, a very nice place to visit.

A Bit of Everything

Sanford

By meganmX577ZN |

Downtown Sanford always has something going on event wise. Its decent and a lot of places for your children to go. I dont like the parking or the neighborhood it surrounds. Nothing you can do but it can get a little rough at night. Overall though it's very nice.

Always something going on

By mzbook |

If for no other reason, go for a leisurely (or cardio) walk along Lake Monroe on the river walk. There is plenty of free parking in the area, well lit lots and streets. Privately owned shops and restaurants line 1st street and there are a few lakeside as well. Plan to spend the day, from here it's short drive to the zoo where there are also zip lines and ropes courses. A day by the water is always a good day!

Auto Train

By phumes |

I couldn't believe how easy it was to get to the Train Station. Wish I had more time to look around Sanford before getting to the Auto Train. The train station is clean, although the store here is much smaller than the one in Lorton, VA. We were still able to grab a sandwich for lunch. Everyone was courteous and helpful. So pleased we decided to take the auto train, a much easier way to travel than trying the long drive ourselves. Next time I have a few places in Sanford I'd like to visit.

Quaint, main street is a brick street

By BB411 |

Quaint downtown with a brick main street. Lots of parallel parking and some off side lots. A few streets away is the lake front with swings to sit on and enjoy the water and your coffee. Great lake side area. Feels safe wherever you walk. Nice Sanford city museum that is free. Interesting history, relationship with Belgium, celery and air force. Very fun visit. Park has children's area, ranger station and clean restrooms.

DT Sanford - GREAT place to have fun!

By Pamela H |

DT Sanford is a MUST if you live or visit anywhere in CFL. There are loads of things to do and see including sailing with USail or the Barbara Lee on beautiful Lake Monroe, having your event at 520 on the Water, eating at Bison, District, Willow Tree and more... 2nd Thursdays are Alive After 5 where 1st Street is blocked off with vendors, music and great times!

Change is good!

By Trish H |

So many new things there! Grew up in this town and it is so nice to go back and see all of the changes and how great this town is doing now. If downtown was this good when I lived here 10 years ago, I may have never left.

Sanford - the little town that's really trying

By Aloft1961 |

An old Florida town with character and getting more by the month. New lakefront walkway, bars, restaurants, monthly Alive After Five street events, Paint The Trail. So many cool things and buildings. Beautiful location on Lake Monroe and lots of fun places to eat and drink. This is old Florida with a new twist.

Having lived in Sanford for almost 15 years, I have had the chance to see things change and grow and one of those things is Downtown Sanford. Or DoSa as we like to call it. With great craft brews and growing, awesome little resteraunts, fresh market on weekends, antique shops and other little shops, this area is greatness. If you are in town, have a look!

Sanford isn't just an airport

By FizzUk |

Having flown in and out of Sanford many times, twice this year we have stayed a couple of days in the area. It's lovely and there's lots to see. The small downtown area has a few shops and restaurants. We enjoyed a lovely walk on the riverside and marina area and had a super dinner cruise on the paddle steamer that runs on the St. John River. There's also a great zoo and lots more to explore in the area.

Nice place to relax

By Robert B |

Some awesome art stores and places to eat. Great Gyro place and fun walk. Many antique stores and plenty to do. Free parking!

Sanford is a Pleasant Place to Visit.

By MICHELLE S |

Sanford is on its way to becoming a quaint little town. I have visited twice with friends and we enjoy walking and talking and finding pieces of "Paint the Trail" around town. Next to the visitor center is a display of painted fence panels and if you search around town you will find more. We were told not to go farther south than the Cultural Corridor entrance on the corner of Sandford Ave and E 6th St- that area of town is a little rougher.

Fun place to visit

By Beth P |

This is a town full of character and fun to visit with all the shops. We enjoyed getting ice cream and smoothies at A Taste of Thyme Cafe.

Quanit, Nice and Quiet!

By VanDan65 |

Historical in a Florida way.. Defined as not too very old in, a New England way, but for Florida quite a History. Situated on the St. John's River's Lake Munroe, this is as old as it get's in Florida. Perfect for a nice lunch or dinner and a pleasant stroll through quite a few Antique shops and a variety of gift shops and stores. A monthly "Street Scene", when pedestrian's only prevail, and local vendor's show their wares and provide tasty tidbits for a token $5 fee. And they even serve beer and wine, unusual for this mildly conservative area. Plenty of pizza and ice cream for those of a less jubilant nature. Brings back memories of a not so hurried time. This is the way it "it used to be", seems like a very long time ago.

Hot n Cold

By Rita T |

Some spots in Downtown Sanford are lively, like 1st Street, the main drag. The highlight here is Hollerbach's Willow Tree Cafe. It's a German Restaurant/Bar, and Grocery Store. They host Oktoberfest. There are several antique stores and a local artists gallery. There is a string of bars on Cypress Avenue. He besides that it has many dead areas. It struggles to bring in new business.

Love this City

Love Downtown Sanford, Fl. It is a nice place with lots to do and see. I feel blessed to live near a city with so much to do. Highly recommend you visit this area of town!

Staying overnight near The Sanford airport to catch an early morning flight. Nothing of note near the hotel so went in to downtown Sanford. Pleasantly surprised by a very nice historic district with a number of good restaurant and entertainment options. Had drinks and dinner at the Breezeway with an excellent beer menu, music and some of the best food we had on our trip. Definitely worth the short drive if you’re in a similar situation.

Love this town

By Lydia W |

Just like out of a movie. Cute, small southern hospitality town. Riverwalk is gorgeous! Downtown is amazing. We love the German restaurant and used book store. You never know what you'll find there and the owner is so sweet. Hit it everytime we are there.

Old Florida

Great little place. Lots of eating opportunities, even just off Main Street. Had a really friendly vibe. Didn’t have time to explore the river walk, so will definitely come back.

Don't miss walking around in downtown Sanford!

By GOULET B |

Walk around lovely Historic Sanford on the cobblestone streets. It has restaurants, sidewalk cafes, music, pubs and several places with their own craft beer. Visit the small quaint shops all along 1st Street. Then take your children down the street to Fort Mellon Park! The whole downtown is well maintained and beautifully landscaped with abundant flowers and palm trees. Don't miss walking along the RiverWalk while you are there!

Fun little town

Another fun little small town. Lots of shops, restaurants & bars. Easy parking too. We enjoyed walking around to all of the antique shops and boutiques. Not open real late, but fun to see if you can get there early.

Unique, non-chain stores and restaurants

By munky2005 |

We went to downtown Sanford on a Saturday to visit the farmer’s market. It was a happening place from baked goods, produce, crafts and homemade merchandise. The market had a lot of unique venders. The downtown had many antique, art and book stores. We could have spent a lot more time there if not for little hands that could break fragile, handmade items. There were many restaurants to choose from, many of them at the top of the trip advisor dining list. It is also within walking distance to the marina. We will definitely return to this nice downtown area to relax and take a stroll.

Off The Beaten Path

By Gary L |

You will find zero corporate franchises for your drinking and dining experience in Sanford. Everything is local, and the people very friendly. It's becoming the only place we hang out.

Nice place to browse

By Brellie |

There were plenty and nice shops to browse and plenty of restaurants. There is something for everyone.

Historic and fun

By Wayne-Librarian |

Really quite an extensive area of shops, galleries, restaurants, and clubs in well preserved vintage buildings. Bricked streets make it very pedestrian friendly.

Historic, beautiful, and fun

By Jessica P |

There are many lovely shops, a good collection of bars, a few restaurants, and many fun events. There is a small but informative welcome center. It is a very walkable area, and we love visiting this district.

Beautiful City

By Kim |

Lots of nice places to see, eat and visit. My favorite city in Florida. Highly recommended place to visit, especially on the weekends.

Its ok but...

By LightRealms |

Cute little area with many various shops and restairants, a library, and other businesses. The main brawback here is the extremely high crime rate in Sanford. This city clocks in as safer than just 4% of all cities in the US. Don't be too fooled by stats though, I've lived here for 12 years and nothing happened to me yet. The point here is to just keep your head up when out and and about. Especially if your alone.

Shops and restaurants

By Texhusky75 |

Walk around downtown and you can browse the many shops that are there. There are many choices of restaurants and bars with varied cuisines.

Fun to shop then eat

By Sergiosr1949 |

Downtown Sanford has come a long way. The streets are great for a casual walk before dinner. The German rest. is great and a lot of fun.

So quaint

By 360candicec |

This place is amazing! You can take long walks around the lake! Plenty of benches! Lots of boats to see! And around the corner all kinds of interesting shops and restaurants! Only problem is too many vacancies! Seems like they need to give rent incentives to pull businesses in! Otherwise wonderful!

Americana at its best

By Dean S |

Downtown Sanford has become a destination for people of all ages. Plenty of good and varied food stuff's, bars, music, a thriving theater, ice cream parlors, book stores, a monthly street party. It has something for everyone.

The town of Sanford is very quaint with specialty shops and restaurants and pubs. It is a great place to visit on the weekend.

All sorts of fun activities!

We spend an evening downtown at least once a week. No Matt if it is just the two of us, the kids are home for a visit, or relates are here from up north, we can always find something to do that appeals to our guests.

Downtown is Growing Up

By Foodie |

Sanford has done a lot to bring its downtown back to life and there are some nice restaurants, bars and shops to visit. We enjoyed our day there.

Wonderful little sleepy town

By BeenThereGoingSoon |

On Saturday there is a very active farmer's market on Main Street and the river walk is also very nice with benches. There is a Park with pavilions where you can picnic and also grills. There is a lovely museum. Take a lovely stroll down main street and have lunch at the many diverse restaurants.

Continues to improve ...

By Dennis B |

We have lived in Seminole County for 30 years. Downtown Sanford wasn’t much back in the 80’s. Today it is a wonderful place that keeps getting better. There are many good restaurants and shops and parking is convenient.

By coreya854 |

There are a ton of fun and unique spots to visit and hang out at. Some of our favorite are Celery City Craft, La Sirena Gorda Cabana (Fat Mermaid), Wops Hops, Little Fish Huge Pond, Christo's, and The Imperial Room. They are even adding new restaurants and bars like Wondermade Marshmallow shop and a new wine room. We definitely recommend visiting the area and looking around. They have events every month such as Alive After Five and Pints and Paws that serve as fun events to learn about the area and meet new friends!

Very Quaint

By BParent |

Was in Sanford Florida just for a day and was pleasantly surprised on the quaintness of this town. Streets are lined with restaurants and shops and has a nice street scene.

Afternoon in Downtown Sanford

By Debi C |

After exiting the Auto Train in Sanford, we realized we had some time to kill. So we drove to downtown Sanford. It is here we found the Saturday Green Market going on. The vendors were filling up on our arrival so we wandered about. I found a nice woman selling homemade salsas, jams etc. She let me sample her creations so I ended up purchasing 3 delicious items. I also visited several booths with jewelry & crafty items. The vendors were all so friendly, and informative. We took a suggestion to eat lunch at Tennessee Truffle.

worth half an afternoon

By Starviagera |

Sunday truck food day, but we had already eaten a lousy lunch in the Barbara Lee river tour. Most stores were open. Took a ride around the historic area.

Has become a much better place

By zeus7218 |

Has become a much better place to walk around. more opened stores to visit, clean streets, Also not get hit on by individuals. I don't mind taking my grandkids now for walks.

Quaint Downtown

By Debbie K |

Sanford, FL has a nice downtown with brick streets, restaurants and many shops. Once a month on Thursdays is Alive After 5, where local business set up on 1st Street and you can sample local cuisine. One Saturday a month they also have the Food Trucks downtown, which is a big hit. Magnolia Square has a Farmer's Market every Saturday and at times there is Jazz festival there, too! The Riverwalk is beautiful, with big sidewalks for taking a stroll along Lake Monroe and the St. John's River. And there is also a River Cruise boat that serves lunch or dinner aboard during a cruise on the St. John's River. We love to walk along the Riverwalk and look at the beautiful water, and at times in the summer you can even spot alligators sunning in the water. We always have a pleasant time in Downtown Sanford and I highly recommend visitors to the area to come and enjoy our beautiful Downtown.

Wonderful Riverwalk, Antique Shops, Delightful Restaurants and More

By Music Mama |

Visit the Farmer's Market, enjoy the antique shops, boutiques, restaurants and be sure to take a delightful walk along the lake. Also, drive up and down the streets to see the wonderful Victorian architecture.

Dinner and dancing

Downtown Sanford is awesome. Had dinner at The Smiling Bison and drinks and dancing at Celery City. A great night, worth the drive!

Up and coming area for food and craft beer

By 01Forza360 |

Old down town, bypassed by all the modern development, gives this place a charm of it's own. Being renovated by a lot of new places to eat and drink. New local breweries abound.

Passing Through

By russellbW1191YD |

What a great little town! It’s a real walkable town with brick lined streets, historic buildings, great restaurants and shops, and a beautiful Riverwalk along Lake Monroe. It even has a waterpark for kids right downtown! There’s also a paddle boat for scenic cruises on the river, and a local zoo just outside of the downtown to add to the list of things to do here. I’ve travelled a lot, this is one of the nicest small towns I’ve seen!

Check out downtown Sanford if you're taking the Auto Train

By Tony F |

We only went into Sanford because we were taking the Auto Train home, and wanted some lunch. The town was a revelation - a very pretty small town on a huge lake, with many good restaurants. We got sandwiches from Hollerbach's German deli, and drove along the lakefront to find a spot to get out and eat in the sunshine. Wonderful.

Great casual walk

By Andrew V |

We were just killing time and walking with family friends and this was a great way to just chill and take a nice walk. Plenty of restaurants and bars if you need that thing. There's also a nice little distillery hidden away that makes some great vodka plus a pleasant little store front.

Half & Half

By Margarita T |

Half is good the other half is run down or shut down. Sanford has not been that successful in revitalizing the Downtown Area. It has a couple micro breweries and other small shops. The big draw is the Willow Tree Cafe and Store. It's a German Restaurant/Bar with a store next door. It has good food and German live music at certain times. Check their website. Besides that it has street festivals, which are nice. But the rest of downtown is run-down or shut down. Sanford needs to provide more incentives to small business in order to more fully revitalize.

Nice area

By TravelingBum10 |

Very pretty area with lots of restaurants and bars. The waterfront is beautiful. There’s a memorial park for the veterans.

Plethora of shops and restaurants

By 91camolot |

Really enjoyed the antique shops and the variety of restaurants. The area is kept spotless and the people were friendly in every shop. One may also walk to the lake for a picnic if you wish. Went with a group of friends and we all enjoyed the day.

Beautiful downtown.

By Carolyn L |

Went to dinner at the Willow cafe which was excellent German food. Visited various shops. All shops appeared to be locally owned, several art shops where we spent a lot of time.

Would be 5 stars if not for one rude person

By kay m |

After visiting several websites, I decided to spend one day/night of my vacation in Sanford. I loved the charming Monroes on the Lake.It was sweet and quaint with wonderful amenities. I shopped on 1st and 2nd street enjoying the wares and hospitality
of the shop owners. The Welcome Center was a font of information and was a fun stop. The only black mark, and I hate this for such a lovely place, was the incredible rudeness I experienced at The Corner Cafe restaurant. The man at the counter, whom I assume is the owner, actually yelled at me when I asked him a question about a special on the menu, and then threw the menu I had been looking at across the counter! What a terrible representation of such wonderful town on a first time visitor. It is for this individual's attitude that I only gave Sanford a 4star instead of 5.

Come stroll a real town and savor food, art and antiques and walk along the river

By A H M |

What a nice surprise. In the last few years the city and merchants have spruced up several blocks with pretty brick pavers and landscaping. Charming and affordable antique and local artisan shops are tucked between family owned restaurants that include a marvelous German deli with a sensational selection of beers and edibles, a sweet Greek restaurant and various mom and pop establishments from hand crafted beads to folk art furniture. Nothing touristy about it!!! Two blocks away you can walk along the river on a broad sidewalk across from a lovely playground, basketball courts and grown up swings. Nice stop if taking in the zoo a few miles down as a couple or family.

Delightful Historic Town

By Lina I |

My sister and I visited the area because of an article we read about a B&B in the area. Sanford sits on the waterfront of Lake Monroe, not far from Orlando. We enjoyed walking around the downtown historic area of shops, antique stores, and unique restaurants. Not a chain restaurant or store in sight! We were there on a Thursday evening for Live After Five (second Thursday each month) where merchants and craftsman show and sell their wares - it's a festival-like atmosphere. There was a S'mores Contest to see who could build the tallest S'mores tower to break a world record. At the Historic Sanford Visitor's Center we were greeted by Linda who shared with us some of the history and gave us suggestions of places to go, including Hollerbach's Willow Tree Cafe, a nationally recognized German restaurant that people come to visit from all around. Most of the old buildings have a history and have been restored in recent years. We will definitely revisit this area in the near future.

Beautiful Town

By orange126 |

Sanford is a nice place to visit. A number of places to eat at and see, Lots of ethnic if you venture off the main st. We ate at the german restaurent which was great and had live music.

old and quaint

By Dean V |

A lot to do in this historic city of Sanford, Fl. Whether it be the dining establishments or the brewery bars that dot the city scapr, or the local Marina with its dinner cruize, the streets are packed with small antique and specialty shops to walk along and relax.

Disappointed

By Cyndeetrek |

Only about half of the shops were open when we went there on a Monday. The German Shepherd was open, and I had a good variety of items.

artsy & fun

By Aunt K |

layover to catch autotrain, so it was nice to spend time looking at sidewalk art, antique shops & grab a beer and sandwich from the German deli.

Sanford: Not much here!

By SmileyBethanyBeach |

The downtown area is old, dirty looking, with very few attractions and a few average restaurants. If you are waiting to take the Auto Train, you can waste about 30 minutes walking around this somewhat run down area. Parking is easy, as there are no real crowds or interest points here. Downtown Sanford only survives because of the questionable attraction of the old Auto Trains Northward.

1880's downtown

By Linda K |

I love this place. T
hey have preserve the whole old downtown and filled it with great restaurants eclectic shops and a lot of antiques

A quick road trip from Kissimmee

By Brunion |

Popped to Sanford on a stormy morning to give us all a break from the hustle of the theme parks. As with most places I am sure it looks better when bathed in sunshine especially the lake area. We had a quick bite to eat at The Breezeway restaurant and browsed around a few of the antique/art shops and a great little comic shop where our children bought a couple of bits. All of the shops were independent which was a pleasant change from the chain store dross which a lot of high streets around the world are flooded with. Overall worth a quick visit but not good for children.

Love it!

By LRC |

Great place to eat, drink, play and live. SHHHH! Don't tell anyone about this historic hidden gem. Friendly people only please! :)

Immaculate

By claimsgal |

This is a beautiful artsy town with unique stores- a German butcher, a craft beer store, an art museum, a building wall filled with memorabilia from the townspeople , nice restaurants and nice shopping . The design of the walkways & the cleanliness of the town says a lot about the area. I Would have loved to have had more time to wander

A blast from the past.

By Mark D |

Sanford has done a lot with rebuilding the historic downtown. There's all kinds of activities and places to see. Some nice little restaurant's and antiques stores. Only a short walking distance to the park along Lake Monroe. Very well kept. Stop there a lot and just relax on one of the park benches.

Rural downtown still trying to rise to the occasion

By RPhTraveler |

Over the years there has been a clear rise in the number of craft beer bars mixed in with a few standard restaurants and small boutique shops. A quick walk might last about 1-hour but unless your a beer drinker, that leaves shopping and the mix of businesses while interesting are hardly memorable. A couple of bright moments but hardly worth assuming that this will be a planned day outing. Just a quick stop at best.

Great small town

By Turtle581 |

The town of Sanford continues to come back and grow form a bunch of old abandoned buildings to new businesses in same old buildings. It is nice to see a small town charter me back to life in this way. Always something going on in town. Many planned events both day and night time. Love walking around town whenever we get a chance.

Simply Stroll on Sanford

By Ichon1 |

What a hidden gem of a downtown area. Plenty to wet, whet and please your palate. Numerous, about thirty, pubs, bars and sites within a five block walking distant. Wonderful vintage homes, buildings and calm water front sites. Great night life and very cool entertainment choices. Worth a day trip.

Historic Sanford Farmers Market, Magnolia Square German Market & Deli , ETC!

By BartlesMcCartles |

The charming town dating way back over a century ago is easy to navigate with free parking everywhere. This square has a spacious sparkling and yummy authentic German Magnolia Square Market (sister to the bustling spirited and also yummy Willow Tree German Restaurant --includes live music much of the time...) The deli with its wursts, sandwiches to order, cheeses, pickles, salads, DESSERTS! etc is incredible. The grocery section which includes great ingredients , massive selection of beers, some wines, beverages, cookies & candies galore is great to experiment indulging or it will look all so comforting to any German transplant... Not to be overlooked is the Sanford Farmers Market on Saturdays in the Magnolia Square . Low key and the vendors have all sorts of wonderful things at great prices. I think it runs from 9am to 2:30 or so...Wonder further around the blocks of other creative retailers, restaurants & bars as well in this unpretentious charming town. There are all sorts of events going on throughout the year apparently so check out the city of Sanford's website so you will not miss out. Oktoberfest there is the best in Florida, Wayne Densch Theater, art festivals, Galleries.....

Quaint little town

Farming Sanford

By Ellen B |

If you haven’t strolled around downtown Sanford, do so! We spent some leisurely time enjoying the scenery and soaking up the vibe of this charming, picturesque little town. We enjoyed our time here, even though most shops are closed on Monday. Go any other day of the week if you want to shop.

Great place to hang out

By mike g |

Historic town that really took off in the early 1900's ... brick streets, shops, restaurants, bars with live music and tons of antiques ... plan on a coupla days to see it all (a week would better)

Stroll with hubby

By Nilvia G |

While on vacation in Cape Canaveral my husband and I decided to visit Downtown Sanford. What a treat!!! Although we got there about 4 pm we still enjoyed visiting the few shops that were still open at that time of day. We enjoyed the "Vintage" charm and the people are so friendly.
We ate at a German restaurant there and plan on returning in a couple of weeks for a longer time to spend strolling, shopping, and adventuring. I recommend it if you enjoy laid back old charm in a town.

Adorable Downtown

By JRR057 |

Quaint small-town downtown feel that is pedestrian friendly with many good cafes and eating options. The adjacent boardwalk is also excellent, with a paved walk/bike path and ample swings and benches. Plentiful parking also makes it easy to explore.

Relaxing Sunday

By Derese S |

During COVID-19 it is extremely difficult to find some thing that is safe to do. We wanted to have lunch in Stanford, and decided to take a lunch cruise on the St John’s Rivership. Pleasantly surprised that the social distances and mask mandates were practiced by everyone. The lunch included: Fresh fruit and vegetable tray, salad, prime rib and steamed vegetables. Dessert was strawberry cake. Please order medium when getting the prime rib. Great price for a Sunday getaway.

Sanford should be designated as "botanical garden city"

By Tiffany A |

If you love plants, superb landscaping, and well-maintained older homes, you must visit Sanford! There are also delicious, reasonably-priced, lively restaurants, a great selection of bars, bike tours, water activities, such a fun place!

My only regret about our visit is that it was so short. We stayed in Historic Craftsman house @ Park Place and if we'd never left the property, I'd still be in awe. But we did walk and drive around, and all of us want to visit again.

Nicely revitalized business area

By ET-retired |

It has been 45 years since I was last here and the town is different but it is very nice with nice shops and restaurants

well done

By Graham w |

Generally Florida is not good at revitalizing downtowns e g Titusville, but Sanford have done a classy job. The roads are sensibly cobbled (unlike say Orlando) and there is a good range of pubs/bars/restaurants with live music. Also felt safe without having all the uniformed bullies around

Quaint - relaxing

By Bfgmatilda |

Lots of little shops with unique items - friendly owners . River walk is relaxing if you're just looking for a place to sit and just breathe in - this is the place

Horrible changes

By missjeepgirl |

I had been to Sanford several times before and it had a Chico's, Panera Bread and other known boutique stores. Now it's almost all restaurants and more Bohemian type stores. Didn't like the changes at all.

Interesting view of yesteryear

By Rod B |

Got the Sunrail to Sanford and then the quaint free shuttle into town. The town has been updated into a nice thoroughfare. But, look up and view the shopping area art deco style frontage of the 1920s, some with their date on them. Interesting to imagine the high street and area of the 20s and before. I like Sanford, nice variety if shops and some very good eateries. A smart, updated, clean town. Worth a visit.

Nice farmers markets and crafts on Saturdays.

By src1962 |

We came here for the farmer's market on a Saturday morning.
There were a lot of booths with fresh produce and arts and crafts for sale.
Nice place to walk around and enjoy the scenery.

Nothing to see

A majority of businesses are closed and it seems hardly a none is open anymore on Saturdays. To walk around for free, sure, it's great..for anything else, don't waste your time

This town has become an amazing Downtown in the last few years. Beautiful historic buildings, amazing restaurants, four micro-breweries, a new distillery, great coffee spots and nightlife.

Wonderful and delightful, there's a reason I keep coming back

By SanfordFoodie |

And that reason is that Downtown Sanford is a happy, fun, entertaining, and wonderful place to visit. We spent at least one or two nights every week eating and drinking in downtown Sanford, and it's always a lot of fun. We met lots of friendly local and love it so much that we're in the process of relocating to nearby downtown Sanford next year. I cannot wait to be able to walk downtown from home and spent EVERY night in Sanford. Highly recommended

Wonderful little town

By DBeery |

After dinner we strolled around the downtown area. The nightlife was in full swing and there were plenty of places to stop for a bite or a drink. All of them were packed, this is a happening spot! During the day there are plenty of shops to visit, but they're all closed by dinnertime, so get an earlier start if you like shopping.

Dissappointing.

By BarbarafromFL |

We got to Sanford early, so we could browse before lunch, but many stores weren`t open. This was about 10:30 am. We ended up walking a few blocks to a good Will store just to kill time until the restaurant opened. Also, missed some stores that used to be there, but were gone now.

A nice way to kill time before your flight

By _maq_life_ |

If you find yourself, like us, having to leave your accommodation by 11am but your flight home isn't until the evening, then Historic Downtown Sanford is worth a visit. There's a decent selection of restaurants and gift stores - I only wish I'd had more room in my suitcase for shopping! The last time we visited, a tv series about the moon landings was being filmed there; there's a 60's feel to the storefronts which makes it perfect for shows of that era.

Surprising histrical art district

By LynnconnerCPA |

Don't miss the German restaurant and deli. The waterfront and the art district with plenty of food choices, lots of free parking, and even a movie production in progress added to a wonderful evening in Sanford.

Real small-town Florida

By Roomforerror |

Sanford is one of Floridas few remaining unspoiled small towns. A vibrant Main Street, tree lined neighborhoods, beautiful lakefront, and friendly people. Fine restaurants, antique shops, pubs, and early century architecture abound. An excellent local newspaper, and many interesting things to do and see, away from urban Orlando.

Adorable!

By Chloe Thomas |

Historic Downtown Sanford is absolutely adorable! The district is full of adorable shops and delicious restaurants. If you are in the area, I recommend stopping here for at least half a day!

Free parking

By Joanne |

I spent some time walking about before my Ghost tour and was pleasantly surprised. A beautiful waterfront, interesting architecture for the buildings. There were placards explaining various buildings and sites that you could read to get a sense of history. The best thing was lots of free parking and spaces available.

Always great events happening in this charming, historic downtown

By SanfordFoodie |

Watch the calendar, because something is always going on here. Alive After 5 on the second Thursday of the Month brings thousands to the downtown area for the area's largest and best street party, 5-8 PM. The Sanford Art Walk and Food Trucks on the third Saturday are a blast. Many regular and yearly events, something going on nearly all the time, it's just a great small town and a lot of fun, guaranteed!

Relaxing stroll

We were very pleasantly surprised by downtown Sanford. Although it's small, it's clean and there are lots of shops, restaurants and antique stores. We found a great book store and coffee shop. There is plenty of free parking and we watched the sunset at the beautiful river walk which is a block or 2 away. Great, relaxing way to spend an afternoon or evening.

Red Brick Roads and a Wonderful Waterfront

By Pranit P |

1st Street is a quaint little strip of shops and restaurants, anchored by the Willow Tree Cafe, we usually hit up this area after a nice morning walk along the waterfront with our young daughter. I still can't believe it took me 6 years to get out there and appreciate what a nice area it is.

We spent an afternoon in Sanford when visiting our son. We walked up and down the main street, had lunch, visited a street fair and did some shopping. The flowers everywhere were beautiful and cheery. Small town feel was nostalgic, loved that there weren't a bunch of chain stores taking over.

The old downtown is a great place to visit. The core streets are brick. There is lots of renovating going on in downtown Sanford. Places are being fixed up and transform, but all the will keeping the old quaint style in mind. Local brewery and pubs are popping up to go with several really good restaurants. Lots of little shops adorn downtown. Not to mention downtown is located next to Lake Monroe. There are boat marinas and places to walk / jog along the Lake.

Historic Sanford is history...

By M S |

My friends and I have been traveling to Sanford's downtown for the past 15 years...mainly to antique after Mt Dora and have lunch after a stroll around this historic area. The old downtown has been remodeled and lots of work done to update and it is pretty, but the shops are mostly gone. Only a hand full of antique shops and the rest are restaurants but very sparse since the remodel...can it be the rents are too high now? A disappointment overall.. Hopefully businesses will eventually return.

Stroll Down Town...on Tuesday?

By oldpapabell2 |

Well we had to do a Tuesday trip for a German lunch and found many shops closed. Guess this is expected when the weekend is their busy time.

There are some great shops that were open, so go anyway. Less traffic and congestion.

While you are st it, take a stroll down to the boat docks and river walk. It is worth the effort, especially if you are not familiar with the park at the Civic Center.

Good stuff for a lazy day.

Quaint Old Downtown

Sanford's Historic Downtown is many you will find in many older cities in the South. The buildings of yesteryear have been preserved and restored. There are many shops and restaurants that cater to all. There is ample parking nearby that costs nothing, but some have time limits. If wish, you can come to Sanford via the Sun Rail and then take a trolley bus to this downtown for free. Many of the shops here close around 5-6 p.m. so if you plan to go shopping, then go earlier. There are many restaurants of various cuisines here, American, German, Greek, to name a few. We enjoy coming here just to stroll the sidewalks. It is also not a far walk from to the lakefront of Lake Monroe. If you enjoy historical sites over attractions, then this area is for you.

Weird time on 3rd

By Sean I |

Me and my boy Byrd dropped some woodstock in our eyeballs behind the dumpster at park and 3rd. Some guy name otis came by and was asking for money when he turned into this weird fenix lookin dinosaur with wings. Woke up in the dennys bathroom with the fire department asking me if I wanted to go to the hospital. Dont order the skillet bowl. Hashbrowns were fine. Decent trip.
