Good beach experience once you're through the gate

By Gilbert B |

Very large sandy beach with restrooms, changing rooms and concessions. There is lots of parking but the entry is painfully slow even with the parks pass. Get there as early as you can.

Great spot for sunset

By Nick |

The restrooms aren’t the cleanest and the concession area is tiny and crowded.... but the beach itself is nice. Go at sunset and walk the pier.

Get Away Weekend

The sun came out and we headed to the beach from shopping in Holland. Beautiful clean beach. Wasn’t very busy today but a relaxing, lovely way to spend the afternoon.

Amazing

By 62MacG |

Just love Michigan’s shoreline. Visited the day area. It was a week day so there weren’t a lot of people there. There is a place ground for children. A lighthouse. The wind was strong but it was amazing watching the kitesurfers. Plenty of parking. Several benches for sitting. Beach area was clean.

Great Beach

By jameskahre |

Great beach, beautiful sand. Was a bit crowded the Sunday we were there.

Good ice cream and snack bar.

Filthy Bathrooms

By Denise D |

Beach was lovely, but the bathrooms 7/5/21 & 7/6/21 were not kept clean. Garbage overflowing, filthy conditions. Doesn’t exactly invite you to try the food with conditions such as that!

Great view and awesome beach

By Monte K |

When going to this beach I wasn't sure what to expect. Its Michigan, its a lake. But I walked up and first thing I said, "Are we in Florida?" It was awesome. Huge beach, waves, pier, sail boats everywhere and a large shop with food and drinks with bathrooms and changing rooms. Now, don't get me wrong, you are still in Michigan. The water was cold. It was late June, and the water was still 54 deg. But the kids got in. Played and loved it. And the cool water made the hot day feel great with a cool breeze off the lake. Great to just sit and soak up the sun. We brought food and drinks (NO ALCOHOL ALLOWED, its a state park) But we made the best of it anyway. You do have to pay $9 per car load to get in. But its worth it.

Detour beach stop

By Lulu S |

Only stopped here because it was the only way to even see the Big Red Lighthouse. It was a hot day so the beach was pretty packed. And we were there before Memorial Day so there was no fee to enter otherwise you need the state park pass. It was a nice park and beach with a little walk out pier. Had a little kids park as well.

Nice beach

By Andy P |

The beach was clean and not overly crowded (Friday afternoon). Checked a website in the morning to try and find water temps. Website said current water temps was 80.6°, however when we got in the water was freezing. No where near 80°. There was walking areas and a lighthouse. A shop on sight has ice cream, sodas, and rentals of chairs and umbrellas.

Didn’t like the campground

By roxy2525 |

We stayed in the campground during August. Right from the beginning of our visit we were left with a very bad impression, the person checking us and the people we were with in, was very rude. Very small sites, close together, the fire pits on some sites were within 6 feet of the one on the next site. The rest rooms and showers are getting old and really need to be updated. It’s way to far from the campground and the beach.
We have camped all over Michigan and many other States and this is probably the worst state park we’ve ever camped in.

Beautiful beach

By Sylvain L |

We had lovely afternoon on this beautiful beach, swimming and enjoy beach activities. Nice sunset and a lot of fun.

Beach and lighthouse

Nice clean beach with bathrooms and concession during summer months. Also close view of the Big Red Lighthouse

Clean Beach

A very clean beach, lake looks like the ocean!! Sand is fine and soft. We enjoyed a walk on beach while there.

Hard To Believe This Is In The Midwest!

By David P |

I live on the Western shore of Lake Michigan, directly across from Holland, Michigan. The beaches on the western side of the lake are usually small and dirty. The beach at Holland is breathtakingly beautiful and much larger than expected (and very clean). A great place for families!

Beautiful beach on Lake Michigan!

By John T. |

Couldn't ask for more. Sand, sun, and the waters of Lake Michigan. Wander out to the pier and watch the boats come/go. One of our favorite beaches along the west side of MI.

great brach

very clean beach , clear blue water, no pets allowed. patroled by local police ,the town of holland is a great town to visit with a cherry republic store

Beautiful Huge Beach

By Mike K |

We stayed the night at the State Park campground. It was an easy walk to the beach. The beach was huge. They had a nice beach house with restrooms and a snack shop. Parking is a problem on a nice weekend so come early. We walked from the campground but the line to get in was long.

August

By Mary N |

Very nice campground. Super clean bathrooms/showers. Great trails over dunes with access from campground.Gorgeous beach within walking distance. Very small area for dog lake access on lake macatawba. Small store with essentials.

Large beach, access to walking pier. Swimming area, Nothing beats a day at the Holland State Park! Concessions available.

Holland State Park

By Carol R |

A great view of Big Red lighthouse. The beach was clean and we could see for miles. A nice walk and a beautiful view!!

We were hoping to relax

By Skyla L |

We used to enjoy this park. Lately it has become a hangout for young men with race cars, and loud trucks. There is no one available, it seems, to monitor the park rules. Even the most beautiful sunny days, the campers are burning and creating smoke. There is no one monitoring the campgrounds either obviously, because the smell of burning plastic is ever present in the air. Too bad it could be so pleasant.

What a beautiful beach. People were amazing.
It was neat to see how quiet and quaint in the town.
Weather was amazing.

Not as clean as others

By kctangel |

Went this week (on a weekday around 1pm) with our 3 girls. The beach was super packed although there’s a pandemic right now. It was hard to distance and made me feel unsafe. Lots of parking. Bathhouse was gross and dirty. Again no distancing there. The seaweed and algae were so bad in the water that our swimsuits were full when we got home and we only lasted in the water about an hour. I can’t imagine if we had been there all day! The lighthouse was beautiful and we managed to have some fun, but next time I’ll pay to use another cleaner less crowded beach. This will not be one we return to.

Spectacular

By LoveMyFamily6 |

Amazing, wide, clean, huge beach along Lake Michigan. Walked out on the pier and ate lunch at one of the picnic tables on the beach. Absolutely gorgeous. What a treasure!

Great Beach

By Brian L |

Outside of having to pay $17 to get in and the fair amount of debris on the beach (no ones fault) this is a great beach. It is a decent walk from the car to the water but not terrible. There is a ton a ton of space to spread out and a nice pavilion with concessions. There is also a nice park for kids to play in. Certainly a must visit!

Lovely lake beach!

By LoveTrips |

This was our first visit to Lake Michigan, but it was lovely! Our first day was kind of cool and foggy, but that kept the visitors down so it was more empty. The water was cooler than we would have liked, but we couldn't change that, haha! It was a nice visit!

Beautiful beach - soft, white sand - very well kept

By foodie47states |

This park is the place for people of all ages and abilities. There are cement walkways that you can take a wheelchair all the way to the shore. There is a very nice building, housing lockers, showers, restrooms, a good burger and hot dog stand, etc;, indoors. The gift shop offers souvenirs as well as towels and other things you may need as you spend a day at the beach.

Gorgeous

By Kristi T |

Can’t believe it’s Michigan. The beach is wide and clean. There’s a playground and a shower house. And concessions.

Michigan DNR Money Grab

By SPM |

The beach and facilities are fine, but whatever you do, only park between the designated parking lines. We visited from out of state on July 4th and were charged our $9 entrance fee. We then drove around for 15 minutes trying to find a parking space, but there were none because it was only 10:10 AM. Everyone was still arriving and no one was leaving yet. Multiple vehicles began parking at the end of the parking aisles, so we did the same. Rather than using some discretion under the circumstances, after all the DNR took our money and let us in, DNR rangers wrote $85 parking tickets. They did shut the entrance gate down at 10:30 AM, but a little too late for us. The strange thing is that as I was walking back to my car to find my car had been ticketed, I noticed that 2 other cars with out of state plates had been ticketed also, but 3 cars with Michigan plates had not been ticketed. HMMMM! Guess what, the only way to plead not guilty is to appear in court. HMMMM!

Highly recommended

By Nicole |

This is a great space for families of all types to enjoy a variety of activities. There’s fishing, hiking, metal detecting, swimming, a playground, & more. My suggestion- pack a picnic & stay for the sunset.

Nice Beach

By Joe M |

One of the best beaches in Michigan. The only thing that would make it better is palm trees. My wife and I enjoyed our visit.

Nice park, but no fun for dogs!

By mjm48847 |

We enjoyed our secluded camp site, though it was one of only a few --- most campers were crammed into smaller, less private spaces. Nice bathrooms, with showers and hot water. Fairly quiet campground, though there were tons of kids on bikes! Beach is sandy and nice. Dogs are allowed on a small portion of beach, but they cannot access the water. Park staff says there is dog access to water across the road (LAke Macatawa) but many signs say "NO animals" so we drove up to Kirk Park which offers dogs access to water. Very small stretch of beach and NOT nice private property owners south of there!! But dogs didn't care that they were crowded together with many other dogs. Best part of the trip.

Definitely NOT Like Florida - or any coast of the USA.

By lbklover |

Recently was staying in downtown Grand Rapids and decided on a slow day to head out to the beach/lake with some friends. The beach had been advertised as being a “short drive” from the convention site, but it took us a good 45 minutes to get there (and would have been even longer in heavy traffic).

This isn’t a free public park - we were charged $9 to enter the very large parking lot. By the time we got there during the mid-afternoon on a weekday parking was hard to come by.

We accessed the beach from the parking lot - luckily there were metal walkways that headed out to the edge of the water, although the path dropped off into nothingness a few inches from the water.

The sand was somewhat difficult to walk in. I’m used to the white powdery sand on the Florida shorelines but the sand here was heavy and you basically sank into it with each step.

Huge crowds with all manner of dress - bikinis to skirts to shorts. Lots of volleyball nets plus a large building that contained the restrooms and picnic tables (never found the restaurant). Numerous seagulls as well - a pleasant surprise.

Once down by the water line, you need to be careful. Some kids actually dug huge holes into the sand - one child was in a hole that he had dug and he was about a foot from the surface! If you weren’t looking where you were walking, you could have easily fallen in!

We stepped into the water and almost immediately jumped out - absolutely frigid!!! I’ve been in cold water before ... on both the East and West Coasts of the US, but the water here was mind-numbing!!! There were numerous young children, teens and adults further out in the water splashing about - far heartier souls!! (Was it so cold because it’s fresh water versus salt water?). The air temperature was VERY warm so I can only imagine that Lake Michigan’s waters stay at this severely cold temp.

We were certainly glad we went, but would definitely not have any reason to go back.

Wild weather and wilder waves

By geograves |

Winds were 20mph sustained. This meant the sand was blowing and the waves were crashing. Outstanding! Snow fencing is up and causing sand drifts.
Beautiful views.

Delightful beach

By AlwaysTeaching |

On the sunny summer day we visited, the beach parking was full, but there was plenty of room in the 2-hr parking lots just a short walk away. We walked to the lakefront, explored, and walked back in about an hour and a half.

A nice state park and beach.

By Have Camera, Will Travel |

After spending a week at many state parks, I'll say this is a pretty good one for being in town. The beach is very large and and looked clean. The pier and lighthouse are excellent. I was there first thing on a Sunday morning, so it was not busy, which was nice. I know this place gets extremely busy in the summer afternoons. It is a nice beach, so it's not surprising.

Most favorite spot on Lake Michigan!

By mki_home |

We have been coming to Holland State Park beach for years! First as college students then as couples and now as families! it is a gorgeous huge beach. It is kept quite clean. The water is beautiful here. There is a building off the parking lot that has bathrooms, showers, a snack shop with some beach sundries for sale as well. There are beach volley ball courts, a few picnic tables by the shelter as well as by the channel. There is a swingset/playground structure nearby the parking lot. We always walk out to the pier and get close looks at Big Red the famous Holland Lighthouse. We always look forward to our beach trips here. Thanks to all who keep it looking so clean and make it one of natures great spots on the Great Lakes!

SUNSET!!!

By August O |

Perfect place to walk to and watch the sunset, if you plan on driving into the park, plan on being there at least 1 hour before sunset.

Cool Beach on Lake Michigan and awesome Sunsets

By George614 |

We went to the Holland / Saugatuck area for a couple of days away. We were pleasantly surprised when we got to the Holland State Park, yes a little crowded, but yes right on Lake Michigan and an awesome view of the sunset. If you are not a fan of lots of people, or lots of kids on a beach, maybe this beach is not for you, or make sure you get there early or try to find your piece of the sand, but not bad for a trip to Lake Michigan and a cool view of the sunset.

Clean beach

By Becky H |

Clean state beach on Lake Michigan with a lovely lighthouse within view. The water was still cold in June & the line of cars to get in was long.

Such a Pretty Beach

By 2doglady |

We loved our short stay seeing this beach, the boats coming and going through the channel, and the Big Red lighthouse across the narrow channel. The lighthouse is called Big Red but it really is not big. Its red color is unique, though. The beach looked clean and had plenty of people there on a summer Saturday. The beach did not feel crowded though. There is a small food place with burgers, hotdogs, snacks, and MANY flavors of soft serve ice cream. You can also bring a cooler with your own food. There are several sand volleyball courts, too. Lake Michigan is so pretty and we really enjoyed visiting the area.

Beautiful view of lake and icy pier

By TriCityDude |

Park open for mainly drive in and drive thru to view the lake and lighthouse and pier. It is beautiful, even in cold of winter. We did just mainly drive thru, and took pictures of our group. Beautiful backdrop!

Many cars come thru, to drive by, a few to park. Worth coming to and seeing the lake and ice and snow and whatever mood the lake and sky are in. Great place for late afternoon and sun going down.

Huge, clean beach!

By not@work |

This beach is huge! Bath house to change in. Two parking lots. Snack shop and place to purchase things you might have forgotten. Sand is HOT!!! Water clear. This was our favorite place and would come again! It is so much closer for us to come here than Florida so this may be our go to beach!

Clean, large beach.

By Linda G |

This beach is fantastic! Clean, sugary sand, plenty of room, and a great concession building. It has plenty of parking, volleyball nets for the teenagers, jetties to walk on to view the Big Red Lighthouse, and an inlet to watch boats come in and out of the harbor.

beautiful clean beach

By holymoni |

Loved the beautiful beach here. came first thing in morning- 8 am and there were only 5 people there on July 5th. Water was cold, but sand was hot and gorgeous things to gaze at. The red lighthouse is really cool. I think parking is 12 bucks in the lot, but ours was free because we were so early:)

Lake Beach

By Theresa P |

I am used to going to ocean beaches, but this beach on Lake Michigan did not disappoint. We went on July 4 weekend. Weather great and traffic was horrible. We parked on roadside and walked which was faster and free. Beach beautiful. Great sand. Water pretty but cold. Kids had fun. Very pretty with great views of the lighthouse.

Wonderful place to enjoy one of the "Beach Towns" of Michigan!

By Bill H |

Wonderful beach with beautiful views of Lake Michigan. The beach has several paved paths to help with accessibility for better views of the "Big Red" lighthouse and watch the boats go out onto the lake. The is a concession stand and multiple restrooms. Great place to spend a couple of hours as you look at the lake.

Get Family Beach

By John W |

It costs $11 to enter the beach. Nice beach for the family. We waited in traffic for 30 minutes to reach the beach, but it was on a Saturday afternoon in July. The parking was very convenient . We set up an umbrella and had a blanket and took our lunch and enjoyed watching the kids swim. We stayed about 2 1/2 hours and had a great time.

Great beach, cold water

By eskdunning |

The sandy beach at Ottawa Beach is great. A huge expanse of level sand is big enough to accommodate a lot of people without feeling crowded. But Lake Michigan will range from chilly to downright frigid. One of our days in Holland (in July) the water temp was 52 degrees. Not for the faint of heart. But this is a great family beach, with restrooms, dressing rooms, picnic tables, volleyball nets, a playground and amazing sunsets. You will need to purchase a sticker to park at Ottawa Beach.

Beautiful Place

By Jan W |

Love this state park beach. Lovely place the watch the sun set, watch kiteboarders on a windy day, or simply walk the beach or boardwalk. We love this place. Can't get enough of it.

Sunset Divine

By B D |

Lots of sand and waves. Warm sunshine with sail boats floating by. Seagulls attracted to the popcorn you threw at them. Sand dunes to rest at. While the beach stretches for miles. Dont forget the sun hat.!!!

Nice sand beach

By Wendy L |

On unbusy days, this is a great beach to visit. During the summer, it can be very crowded so even though a large space, it feels small. The water is high so the walkable space along the shore before trespassing is limited.

Holland State Park

By terkarbrink65 |

A beautiful place. Big Red (Lighthouse) is an old lighthouse. A very busy park right on Lake Michigan. The sand doesn't have any stones in it.

The Best of Lake Michigan

By Scott B |

Holland State Park is the absolute best!! From views of our famous "Big Red" lighthouse, which is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the State of Michigan, to our sandy beaches, it is a trip worth taking!! I grew up and live in Holland, Michigan and have been coming here for years and years. I love Lake Michigan and this is the place to take it all in. The camping is awesome and the views are spectacular! Holland State Park is also the busiest State Park in Michigan and has been for many years but don't let that stop you from checking out our gem on the left coast of Michigan! You won't regret it!!!

Clean, fun and will go back

By Christine G |

We live on the Chicago side of Lake Michigan and it's NOTHING like the Holland State Park beach in Michigan! Clean beach, easy to get there, tons of parking and everyone was really friendly. As other reviewers have stated (and we're glad we read those before going) get there EARLY. Especially if it's a weekend. We followed that advice, got there at 10:15 am on Sunday, paid our out-of-state parking price of $9 and enjoyed about 3 hours of beach time. We left about 12:30 and the line of cars to get in was at least a mile long (I would say even longer than that, really). When parking is full, they close the gates. Your parking pass is good for the whole day, so you can come back, but getting back in isn't guaranteed and they make sure you realize that. But it's a beautiful spot to enjoy breeze, beach and sunshine. And yes...Lake Michigan is COLD. But there were tons of people swimming, you get use to it pretty quickly.

Family had lots of fun.

By andrewbeltran90 |

When we arrived to the beach not many people were there the weather was stormy. The kids had fun watching the storm roll in.

Beautiful but busy

By TriCityDude |

Beautiful expansive beachfront and canal with tons of sailboats going in and out.
Modern beach house with drinks and supplies. Volleyball courts.
Beautiful Lake Michigan views. Busy with people lining the canal even on a Wednesday.
Dredging going on in the canal- fascinating to watch.
Walk out on the pier— brink your mask cuz plenty of people out there....

Water is REALLY HIGH.

Beautiful!

By rtsnodgrass07 |

This beach is absolutely beautiful. Definitely recommend. Stay the day! It doesn't even feel like you are in Michigan!

Great day with kids

By Aaron |

An amazing beach with it’s white sand. There’s not a huge crowd at all. A pleasant day to spend with family and kids.

Beautiful sunsets

By Garden guy |

They have a nice beach and plenty of parking. May I suggest visiting during the evening so that you can photograph beautiful sunsets over Lake Michigan.

Great beach

By Ivan G |

Great beach with special views. had a buffet and multiple toilets. Nice place to spend time while looking out over the lake.

Not my Michigan beach

By cdub1382 |

I do appreciate every beach we do visit . Maybe I’m just spoiled by the beaches in Michigan by my house , maybe the wrong time, wrong place but the water was gross. It was completely dark after a foot and a half . You couldn’t see anything at all . It had tons of seaweed and algae and the list can go on and on about the water . The concession stand was nice and clean . They have ample parking and a walkway which is handicap accessible from the parking lot that gets you close to the channel of the boats going in and out and a very close snapshot of the lighthouse .

Peaceful lake view,

By butrcup1210 |

Make sure you already have a parks and rec pass before you go that way you dont have to wait in line. Restrooms on sight include a faucet to rinse your feet. Nice touch! Also has a souvenir ice cream shop as well.if going on a weekend get there early before it parking gets busy.

One of my favs

By P2474ZSkarenp |

Lots of parking. Deep beach, so still plenty of room for everyone with water level high. Beach had not been cleaned up for the season yet by state employees, probably due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Great place to watch boats coming in and out, and watching artist paint the lighthouse.

Awesome Beach

By Patricia K |

Excellent beach with easy access for those with mobility issues. No big staircase to go down / up! We went during the week so there was plenty of parking very close to the beach. Cafe had good food, great service, and reasonably priced! Only one drawback- I wish they had outside showers to take off all the sand. Foot baths in the bathrooms but full showers would be better.

Great day

By LianaBeth |

Beautiful beach with a playgroud, changing rooms and snack bar (good ice cream!). The restrooms were limited and had a line (ladies of course). Easy walk to the little lighthouse and breakwater.
We played in the water in the afternoon and came back to watch the sunset.

Beautiful Beach

By Timothy A |

One of the nicest beaches we have been to in Michigan. Very clean, nice facilities and easy to get to. We stayed about 3 hours and played in the sand. Water still too cold for us southerners. 48 degrees to be exact on Memorial Day Weekend!!! Will definitely be back!!

Beautiful beach!!

By Bggirl29 |

We took our young boys to this wonderful beach and really enjoyed the experience! The beach was clean and vast and the sights including the lighthouse were breathtaking! This beach is a must!!

Best Beach in Michigan

By Rebecca E |

My family and I stayed in Holland, Michigan for our family vacation! We loved Ottawa Beach! There is a ramp that almost takes you right down to the water. They put up green, yellow and red flags to let you know how the water is for swimming. You don't need to pay for parking during the week so that was nice! The sand is super nice and the water was so fun! Love this beach! Better than Erie in my opinion.

Crowded on a Sunday

By Kswett |

Walk the pier, watch the boats, play on the playscape. Restrooms and eats available. Took a ridiculous amount of time to get into the parking area, not sure what it would be like on a different day. All in all everyone had fun.

Big State Park with Plenty of Recreation! Red Lighthouse and Lake Michigan Beach are highlights!

By adrianna24sings |

Popular Holland State Park Beach has much to offer. There's boating, camping, fishing, hiking, and swimming opportunities. The general stores are great too. Weekdays are best to avoid big crowds. Definitely a fun-filled day for families, friends, couples, and singles. Lots of recreational things to do and everything is well maintained. A feeling of the wilderness within the city limits of Holland. The walk on the pier is pleasant as well as kayaking, paddle-boarding and swimming in the lake! On Monday, June 13th it was extremely HOT outside so my boyfriend and I stayed for only an hour and a half. Fortunately we have a yearly state park pass so we didn't have to pay the entrance fee. Plenty of photo opportunities at the state park especially the "red lighthouse."

Nice

By winks1996 |

Beautiful views of the lake. Tons of photo ops of the red lighthouse. Beach was big . Felt like we were at the ocean

Camping trip

By alwaysonthemoveee |

Great beach !!! Make sure you bring a beach chair the cost 25-38 bucks (we forgot ours ). The food stand seems like it has a decent selection of food .

There is a lot of parking and plenty of beach for everyone

Holland one of our favorite Lake MI beaches

By Basspohl |

I visited Holland beach with three teenagers. My first piece of advice is to pay the $10 when you renew your vehicle plate/tabs for the state recreational passport. It meant no line to get in to the parking lot, saving some time. There is plenty of beach, a concession stand with restrooms. No lifeguard on duty. Signs were up since there was a potential for riptide, but even after the wind picked up and the no swimming warning there were people in the water. There is a pier for fishing or jumping in to the water, but it was windy enough at the end of the day to be unsafe. Being right next to the channel in to Lake Macatawa, it's fun to watch the boats passing, as well as to see the Big Red Lighthouse across the channel.

Ideal place for swimming or just to be in the sun

By Stephen C |

Given how cold it gets in winter here, I can fully understand why the state park and the beach is so popular in summer.

It took us quite a while to get into the parking lot as many others wanted to enjoy the sun, sand, and waters in summer.

There were plenty of swimmers as the temperature was warm enough to just jump in and enjoy the cool waters. There were also many sunbathers. The place is also good to just hang out with friends as it is pretty scenic with the dunes and houses in Holland City in the background.

Most beautiful beach in West Michigan

By Jack D |

Ottawa Beach is golden sand and wide open spaces with a pier, great for walking and watching beautiful MICHIGAN sunsets!

Nice public beach

By windycitygirl2014 |

Nice pleasant atmosphere. Great for the family. Everyone cleans up after themselves. Very scenic with the boats.
Great place for the family. Great sandcastles.

Perfection!

By Kathie R |

Whether you want to relax and watch the boats travel in and out of the channel; play in the lake, on the sand or fly a kite...this is the place!

beautiful

By Jen |

We stopped here on our way out of town. It cost $9 to enter, but it was worth it. The beach was very clean and there were several workers available. There is a sidewalk you can take to the waterfront which is helpful for not tracking all the way through the sand. Great scenery and even a small playground.

Weekend getaway

By kellyppxx |

Beautiful beach, beautiful lighthouse, parking hard to find, found a little pkg lot across the channel to watch the boats go in & out. Nice way to spend a lazy afternoon.

July 30 2018

By Kristin K |

Awesome place to bring Midwestern families. Even with a Greek husband (beach snobs!) we had a blast, soaked up sun and water (temperature was fine in late July and early August, husband described it as Northern Greece and Dalmatian coast in June,) took in some beach volleyball, and overall had a wonderful time. Bring your own umbrellas, lawn/sand chairs, and whatever you need for the beach. Long beach, soft squishy sand, clear water, got a bit crowded afternoonish, as anticipated during high season. Scenery around Holland and down the coast is awesome. Kiddos loved their trip up the sand dunes as well. Well worth a separate visit. Our only family vacay for 6 days this summer, and it was worth the drive up from St. Louis. That part of Michigan is truly wonderful for families.

Pretty beach

By drmoore |

We went to the beach to take pictures of the lighthouse. There’s lots of trees on the way to the beach and nice benches to sit on. The area before you get to the beach had several small groups of adults visiting. It was a great place to sit and visit.

Clean, relaxing beach

By Rachel548 |

We only had time to stop here for about an hour or so on our day trip, but it was very enjoyable. The water was cold and it was quite windy, but my boys had fun playing in the sand and making sand castles. The sand was pretty soft, although in some areas there are a lot of little shell pieces which poke the feet. Litter didn't really seem to be a big problem here, which was nice. It wasn't too crowded and for the most part, people were social distancing. There's a nice walkway, a fishing pier, a play structure, ample parking, restrooms, and you can take photos of the lighthouse and watch the boats.

Nice beach

By Cindy M |

One of the few beaches in the area that you don't have to hike up, or down, a big sand dune. Restrooms, ice cream and souvenirs available here. Small enuance fee.

Quick visit

By Jennifer K |

We stopped for a quick visit while visiting the area. It is a beautiful beach, plenty of parking.. would love to come back and visit in the summer months!!

Beautiful!

By Jan G |

This is a beautiful state park on Lake Michigan. The beach is clean and we did not find it to be crowded. There was plenty of parking. You can walk along the channel and view the lighthouse on the other side. A worthwhile stop. Love Lake Michigan!

One of the best beaches in Michigan

By HarpDivaCK |

I love this beach! It's easy to get to, beautiful, lots of room so even if it's busy you still have plenty of space. The facilities are nice. It has everything you need for a great day at the beach.

Relaxing at the Beach

By DanielDonna |

Enjoyed our visit with family at the waters edge of Lake Michigan. Beautiful sand beach with rolling waves and lots of beautiful sites. Families were able to have their own space looking West towards Milwaukee, WI. Very clean with solid walking path to the water. Bathrooms and shaded areas out of the sun. Several boats coming and going into Lake Macatawa.

Camping in a parking lot by the beach but sites are good size for side by side camping. Easy to get to the beach. No shade. The other campground has shade but is an easy bike ride to the beach. Beach parking lot gets full on nice beach days.

This is a beautiful beach with a lovely breeze off of the lake. Amenities are available such as changing rooms, snack bar, store, and clean restrooms. A small playground is on site too.

Wide and sandy

By Jessi W |

Holland State Park has a nice, wide, sandy beach - plenty of room to spread out a blanket and some beach chairs and enjoy a summer afternoon. Play in the water, watch the boats in the channel or get a tan - it's about soaking up the sun here in Holland. A beachhouse with changing rooms and a park store is available from Memorial to Labor Day. The restrooms stay open longer for guests who visit in the off-season. The beach is also nice to visit in the fall when there are less people.

Arrive early as the line to get in the parking lot can get extremely long on busy weekends.

Good campground and great beach and local area

By Itinerant_Foodies |

We camped here for two nights and also explored the beach and lighthouse area while we were there. The campground is good, though there are some sites that can (and did) flood during periods of significant rain. The reservation site will alert you to the sites that can flood. The lighthouse and beach area is wonderful with. The walk from the campground to the beach is relatively short and quite nice when using the path.

Beach

By Lyn P |

This was a very nice and clean beach, it is very relaxing. There is a play area for kids, volleyball area, concession stand .. There are plenty of picnic tables and benches to sit at if you don't want to sit in the sand and sun. I had a state park license plate sticker so I am not sure how much to park. Overall it was very nice.

Best part of Holland is the State Park

By alstee6 |

This is a wonderful state park. Enjoy swimming, or sun bathing, or just watching the boats travel the channel. The sunsets can be brilliant and the light house is picturesque. When taking pictures, avoid including the tacky disney esque house on the south side of the channel.

Beautiful beach

By lily85 |

We came here with my 3yo daughter and my parents. There is a short easy walk from the parking to the beach. Depending on the water currents, you might get lucky with warm water, but we didn't. My daughter was playing in the sand, and we walked along the beach a little.

Really nice park with lots to do

By Mike N |

Nice park with big beach, lighthouse view, and great spot to watch boats going to Lake Michigan. Plenty of space to spread out and activities for all ages. Concession area has lot to meet needs and plenty of parking. Great location to walk around Ottawa beach. Definitely recommend visiting hike in Holland.

Beautiful!

By Lori S |

A beautiful, large beach with the softest sand! Next time we visit and plan a beach day this will be our pick!

Interesting Winter Beach Scene

By IL_Jeff |

Although is was cold and windy, the scene on the beach were interesting. It was fascinating watching the ice flowing into the bay. And the stark contrast of the Big Red Lighthouse against the background was gorgeous.

Beautiful beach and a great view of the lighthouse.

By parksvisitor |

We were travelling with our dog, so we knew we couldn't go on the beach, but we checked at the visitor center and confirmed she was allowed on the causeway on the channel that led out to the end of the breakwater and offered a great view of the lighthouse across the channel. The beach does look wonderful. We were there on the Monday before Memorial Day and it wasn't too busy, but I imagine it fills up on nice summer days.

Great Experience

By SharieN_13 |

Great Visit, we went jus as the campground opened, everyone used precautions and distanced which was nice. We had a nice chat with a DNR Agent that was patrolling the beach. The pier, and beaches were clean and well kept up. Everyone, including were enjoying themselves and social distancing and made an enjoyable morning

Great beach

By a J |

What a beautiful state park, very clean beautiful views!
Bathrooms very clean and well kept. Great job

Great beach w. facilities and ample space

By 5thgirl |

Spent a day here and thoroughly enjoyed it. Arrived around 10 and had no problem finding a parking spot. We situated ourselves far back away from the crowds that were closer to the water. There was enough space to distance. Bathroom and changing facilities were good. Mount Pisgah and the Ottawa Beach General Store super close by for ice cream. Would come back anytime.

Lots of Space at Busy Beach

By noxiousburrito |

Beautiful sandy beach with lots of space for beachgoers. Bathrooms available with changing areas. Nice shadier area to watch boats leaving the harbor out into the lake. Spent two days at the beach and enjoyed both.

Beach was fantastic!

By Tremors C |

We loved this beach! We went out during day and came back later to watch an epic sunset. It was kind of windy the day we visited but it did. It didn’t deter the kids in the water and all the beachgoers having a blast. They even had free Ev chargers - thank you state of Michigan.

Nice beach

By golfslw |

Fairly busy beach. We went at sunset but the sand is very nice and the red lighthouse is good too, though similar to others we saw on our trip.

Nice, Clean Beach & Views

By Kevin S |

This beach is really nice. You have a great view of the Big Red Lighthouse, a lot of parking, not crowded (at least in August) and the beach and paths are really well maintained.

Gorgeous view of Lake Michigan and the Big Red lighthouse.

By MichiganMom71 |

Nice beach to relax and watch the sunset. Lots of space to spread out and swim. They do have changing rooms and bathrooms and a few picnic tables and benches.

sad example of friendly Holland

By Compass16508 |

The State of Michigan should take better care of this beautiful beach. The garbage is always overflowing and the park restrooms are to be avoided at all costs. This park is an embarrassment to the residents of Holland. This park should be clean, accessible, and the staff should be friendly and take pride in our park. The governor should experience this park. She would be ashamed of how poorly this represents our state.

Beach

By Jason W |

One of the nicest beaches in Michigan. Large beach area. Great channel to sit by to watch boats & lets not forget Big Red Lighthouse.

Beautiful park to camp

By Teachsomething |

First timers here and very pleased. We camped on the beach side and love it. The view is great and the beach is huge. Will definitely be back. Sites are large and there are even full hook ups in the middle!

Nice beach and cute area

By AlexG8328 |

We camped at the campground nearby and walked to the beach. The beach is nice and the surrounding area is very cute. The ice cream shop on the way is very big and has buzzers for your ice cream!

Beautiful beach!

By John C |

We loved our visit to the Beach at Holland State Park. The beach was clean and well kept. Playground and facilities were all clean and in good condition.

Breathtaking

By Sandra H |

Beautiful park. A bit of a drive from downtown area. Nothing open until Memorial Day. Plenty of parking.

Fabulous even with the snow!

By Jamie D. |

Very nice beach with a great view and sunsets...even in April with the Snow! I am sure it gets very crowded in warm weather. Not a lot of parking available. A must see for sunset pictures!

Great beach but expect a line

By Derek L |

Very nice huge beach. A little dirty and lots of traffic. Holland doesn’t have great access to the lake so this is it. Expect to wait to drive in. Once we got in there parking was easy and short walk to beach

Miss the beach!

By Roadqueen72 |

Grew up here, and now that we live 1200 miles away, I need to see the beach each time I return. Beautiful beach at any time of year.

Lake Michigan is beautiful

By Mike M |

The beach is clean and patrons seemed friendly and were enjoying themselves. The water was clean and gently lapping at the shore. The shop has items for sun protection, souvenirs, snacks, and drinks. Bathrooms were typical public-beach bathrooms: could have used a good cleaning once or twice throughout the day.

Sunny beach

By anu_v |

There was a time when I wondered when would the sun be shining down on my face in a nice and cool environment? It happened when I was here with my friends. They loved the beach a lot. I was sun tanning and was watching the sun.

Please go and spend a day at the beach.

By Vicki H |

The beach was very clean. There is a lighthouse. They charge $11 to park. It was a great day to just sit and read. Take your beach chairs and umbrellas and sun screen.

Annual visit

By Ron R |

We visit this area once a year, every year and always make sure that the Holland State Park beach is one of our stops.

Too much algae to enjoy

By Jen |

We visited this beach in the summer of 2019 and loved it (even wrote a review here). However, we returned in July 2020 to a different beach. It was much more crowded, so in order to effectively social distance, we had to stay far back from the beach. Also, there was so much algae this year that it made swimming uncomfortable. There was algae sticking to our bodies afterward. The day after traveling here, we went up to Pere Marquette beach on a recommendation and had a much better experience. Hopefully, when we return to Holland, post Covid, we will also find a cleaner beach here.

Beautiful View

By MikeWithEars |

Staying in Holland for a weekend getaway. Very clean beach compared to others visited. Went right before sunset and it was beautiful. Wasn’t super crowded either.

Nice view and beach

By Don M |

Beautiful view of Lake Michigan with wide white sandy beaches. Was there during off season so crowds were pretty much non-existent.

Breathtaking views

By Laura O |

My husband and son got to the beach later afternoon. Beautiful sights of sailboats, and lighthouses. Our son especially enjoyed playing on the sand and dipping into the water which was a bit chilly but still comfortable. We went on a gorgeous day with lots of sun to keep us warm. Our walk down the pier was also nice. Highly recommend.

Beautiful sand but small.

By cw0108 |

Holland State Park Beach has beautiful sand however not as big as I thought it would be. The beach are would be very crowded on a sunny and warm beach. Parking is limited thus if in summer I would go early. There is a campground nearby that looked nice. There is a restroom however not open yet for the season.

Beautiful

By kelley62 |

The weather did NOT cooperate, but the beach was beautiful. We would have liked to stay longer but too cold We want to come back later in the summer.

Phenomenal beach, lighthouse and amenities!

By Phyliss B |

Volleyball courts, basketball courts, walkway and beautiful sand dunes makes this State Park exceptional!
The beach offers a small store selling beach toys, sun tan lotion, food and soda and ICE CREAM! The service was great.
This is a definite stop for everyone, it really exemplifies Michigan The Great Lake State! It also has a fantastic lighthouse!

Crowded But Worthwhile

By Sandra R |

Beautiful sandy beach with a view of the lighthouse. Some good waves and a nice stretch of shallow water lets you go out pretty far without getting in too deep. The beach house has changing rooms and showers. $9 to park on a weekday afternoon. Agree with other reviewers to bring your own chairs, towels, and umbrellas/shade providers.

Clean enjoyable beach

By pednurse13 |

Clean. Huge area of sand before you get to the water’s edge, so lots of space for those with younger children to play safely, as well as for anyone who wants to be near but not in the water. Bathrooms with foot rinse stations on site. As it is a state park, you do have to pay to get in. Areas for swimming well marked. And flag out to indicate conditions for safety of swimming or not due to weather.

Cool beach

By Victoria B |

Great beach to sit and watch waves, and boats, or walk. Easy parking, no dunes to go over or stairs to climb. Jetty to explore if you want. Nice facilities for changing and using the toilets.

Photo shoot

By M2white |

During the week it’s a very nice beach with few people. It’s clean and easily accessible. Nice place to jog, walk dog and just relax. Not sure about weekends.

gorgeous

By Lawrence T |

large beach; two excellent state park campgrounds nearby; modern facilities, well managed and cared for

Best beach in the area! Awesome amenities, too!

By Wilma Sheffer |

Just take your chair, towel, and suntan lotion! Entry fee is $9 for all day use! Incredible Red Lighthouse guards the point!

Girls trip

By GoPlaces67662 |

What a beautiful beach! Can't wait to go camping at the state park. Some sites have great shade, but would take whatever is available. Not a huge camping area, but that is not a problem.

Great beach

By dank1954 |

Fun place anytime of the year but expect to get blasted with cold if you visit during winter. Big beach in the summer but can get crowded especially on weekends. Hot tip: there is boardwalk from the concession building (which is excellent) down to the beach if you want to avoid hot sand. Highly recommend fall, winter and early spring to experience the majesty of Lake Michigan. Too cold to swim in these seasons but worth the experience for its beauty. There are three or four county parks up Lakeshore between the Holland State Park and Grand Haven State Park. These beaches are much smaller, especially with high water but are excellent parks and good facilities (bathrooms, changing rooms, vending and picnic playground areas) if the State Park is too busy or you just want a different experience. Depending on the park it can also be a little walk to the beach. Have fun and be safe.

First visit to a Great Lake

By Chris H |

This was my first time seeing one of the Great Lakes and is was spectacular. The day I was there it was overcast and cool. Had great views of the Big Red lighthouse and the vastness of Lake Michigan. Enjoyed walking out on the breaker wall, and walking on the super soft sand.

Nice

By Carol and Ray L |

We only stopped here to see Big Red, but we enjoyed walking around in the area. It was a beautiful beach and there were a few people out, but it was not at all crowded in May. We had a good view of Big Red. It also helped that it was a gorgeous day, weatherwise.

Great Day Trip or Camping

By David F |

Excellent camping sites...limited full hook-up sites. Volunteer Staff are great. Park Rangers need more training. You can choose between Beach side Camping (on Blacktop very near the beech or more shaded camping section still a relatively short walk to the beach (7 minutes). 15 minutes from beautiful downtown Holland. Very busy State Park. Reserve your campsite as early as possible. Nearby restaurants and not far from shopping..

Serenity

By Sandra H |

Beautiful park! Huge beach and breathtaking views of the lake! Great beach for kids and awesome views of the lighthouse! Small concession stand and clean bathrooms!

Beautiful Holland State Park

By Leo K |

Having visited a number of Lake Michigan beaches over the years, Holland State Park continues to be one of the best. It's fairly flat so it is easy for all. You don't have to climb up/down any sandy dunes which is very hard while carrying beach gear or if you have trouble walking It is very large and the facilities are pretty good (especially compared to most other beaches). It really gives one a great grand beach experience. Also, even on a really busy beach day, there is so much beach, everyone has plenty of room.

Beautiful!

By N.B. |

Gorgeous views of Lk Michigan, Big Red Lighthouse. Nice family park. Enjoyed a nice long stroll along the beach- dressed warm for Feb weather!!

Nice walk on the beach and pier...

By jaureliak |

Such a gorgeous beach and nice facilities.

The main road and entrance in gets very busy and backed up.... even on a random Tuesday - we waited to park, so if you are going for the day... plan accordingly.

It was nice to just walk along the beach and pier.... I would definitely go back for a longer visit.

Big Red Lighthouse

By Deb J |

Holland State Park Beach is where you can view the "Big Red " lighthouse the best! Perfect spot is take your family photos. The beach is incredible. Lots of parking available. You have to pay or have a sticker to get into the state park however. Nice play area for the kids. Also, has great sidewalks available for wheel chairs.

First time and definitely won't be the last....

By Tiffany F |

Went to Holland State Park for the first time while visiting Grand Rapids for a few other events and to take in a few other attractions for the weekend. Had a beautiful time... the beach was clean and peaceful, parking was plentiful and there were restroom and concession facilities available. We went in the evening on a Saturday and it was not crowded at all. Will be adding this to our list of beaches to visit on the regular.

Nice beach for the family

By airmarieallen555 |

The beach was very clean. The water was kneeling deep and the kids enjoyed themselves. The bathrooms were nice and clean and room to change your clothes. They only have one wash station for trying to remove sand from your body so you have to wait a little. There was an area to have a picnic and you could walk a little to see the Red Lighthouse. Busy beach even for a Tuesday in the summer.

One of the best !

By Mark v |

One of the best beaches you can go to. I see many beaches reviewed around the world, some are beautiful, some are secluded, but few match the size and vastness of Holland State Park Beach. If In the area, it is definitely a must to go see.

Awesome beach that feels like the ocean

By Turtleswim |

Amazing sand beach that stretches for miles. Lovely red lighthouse in the distance. Wonderful shelter with bathrooms and restaurant. You can swim out a short distance to a sand bar. You can also walk along the entrance to the bay and see the large boats headed in and out to Lake Michigan. It’s a fun day for the whole family.

A Nice Stop

By ChristineBrown92 |

Not much here, but nice to stop in. Not very crowded. Just wanted to look around, but still had to pay to get in.

beautiful beach!

By Judi |

I arrived around 815pm, specifically to get some photos of sunset and was not disappointed. Plenty of parking even though many others were there for the same reason, or were still enjoying the warm water and the large beach from earlier in the day. Very surprised with the soft sand and warm water. Easy to get to and check off "put my feet in Lake Michigan" from the bucket list.

Very pretty beach

By Claire |

Only stayed her for about an hour but still had a good time! Is a great place to come and hang out at. A beautiful place to watch the sunset on the beach. The lighthouse and pier was very cool. Overall very pretty and got lots of pictures. If you are near here this is a great place to stop by and visit.

Big Red lighthouse

By Kandice |

Traveled down this packed road to take a peek at big red lighthouse. Traffic was backed up due to the hot summer day. ☀️ lighthouse is on the other side of the lake so we couldn’t access it or it didn’t look like we could from this beach without getting wet. We had elderly people with bad knees so we ended up turning around once we got up to the entrance. Would love to visit again without the grandparents.

Lighthouse View

By ladytblade |

Dont just go to see the light house take a picnic or book and relax you wont be sorry that you took the time to enjoy. Water was cold but you can still walk the shore and splash like a kid. The beach is kept up so BIG THANKS to all and the city for keeping it trash free.

I love Holland State Park

By terrikrowe |

I enjoy going to this park year round. In the summer-this is a great place to swim. They also have activities-such as Museum Under the Stars-with a local astronomy club. You can always take a walk out to the pier. In the winter-the frozen lake is stunning as well.

First time visit

By Jack A |

Although it was cool and windy, we really enjoyed our visit to this park, particularly since it was our first time. The beach, the sand, the water, all beautiful!

tulip festival visit

By cathy55 |

Drove through the state park and it looks like a great place to camp. Has lots of trees and shade and is more our type of campground. don't remember seeing paved sites which is great with us. Sites don't look very big hard to tell how close campers would be as the park had only a handful of campers. Am very anxious to go camping there.

Nice destination on a hot evening.

By GrammaTripper |

Vast beach. We were thankful it opened since Covid-19 still a threat. We went at sunset and enjoyed watching the beach games and the boats returning to the harbor at the end of the day. The iconic red lighthouse was a nice addition to the scene. Crowded on a hot night but worth the visit, lots of parking.

Great Family Summer Vacation Spot

By stars n |

Large clean sandy beach, restrooms, outdoor shower, volleyball nets, fishing off pier, bbq, no alcohol or pets allowed.

A beautiful view of the lighthouse

By Jodi S |

We visited Holland State Park just after sunset, 15 min before the park closed, mainly to see the lighthouse. It was beautiful! We were able to park in a small parking lot just outside the park and then walk along the sidewalk into the state park to see it. We knew we'd only be there a few minutes and didnt want to pay to get in for such a short time. I think we got lucky with the parking spot. It's probably not easy to find a spot outside of the park when it's busy. While we didn't actually walk out onto the beach, the beach looked amazing...beautiful and clean. I'd love to come back one day to enjoy the actual beach!

Terrible state park

By cbrown154 |

We stayed in the campground during the week. Or camper is a B class van. It was very crowded and unbelievably noisy. Very small sites, close together. Lots of machinery going by, lots of traffic in the campground. The rest rooms and showers were ok, but not great. On the positive side there were lots of young kids who were having a lot of fun.
We have camped all over the US and this is probably the worst state park we’ve ever camped in.

Post pandemic normal

By colormeelmo |

We were it town and just wanted to spend a little time in the sun at a beach after the long pandemic and this worked for us. The water wasn't as clear but there was a storm the night before we were there. There was plenty of paved parking, a very large sandy beach and restrooms. We enjoyed a few hours here out in the sun and will visit again next time we are in town.

Expansive views. Pleasant walk

By hvonderh |

What a gorgeous slip of beach — the sound of the waves and the sink of the sand are a decent Midwestern substitute for the real thing. On a crisp fall morning, expect some whipping winds and the restrooms seemed to be closed for the season. So surprised to see surfers, given the chill in the air. Dogs aren’t allowed on the beach but many visitors disregard. Enjoy!

Big Red visit

By Jill R |

Went to the park to see the lighthouse. It was a little confusing for someone that has never been to this state park....didn’t have to pay to get in. Is that a thing during the winter?? Great access to see the lighthouse. I am sure it is pack during the summer.

#1 spot to Visit in Holland

By James Willis II |

Holland has a lot of nice spot 2 visit but this should be #1 on your list of stops. so much 2 see and has a few great spots for a snack.

Beautiful day on the beach!

By cathykicks13 |

It was a beautiful partly cloudy day. We were happy to get a little cloud coverage occasionally. It was $10/vehicle to get in since we're from out of state. There was plenty of parking (on a Friday around 1PM). There were very nice (newly remodeled) bathrooms. There was also an outdoor shower/foot spray on either side of the building. There's a little convenience store. Our son got a Slush Puppy for $4.50. Seems a little expensive, but about right for on the beach. There were a lot of walkways to get strollers and wheelchairs out on the beach pretty far. The sand was soft and clean. The water was a little cold, but refreshing. It was pretty shallow. One could walk out to the buoys and never get up to an average sized adult's waist.

Perfect views of Big Red, and Lake Mi

By BreezyDee |

Plenty of space, for parking, beaching, walking, and flying a kite.
Big food pavillion and plenty of bathrooms.
Gets very busy on the Summer weekends, but will lighten up after lunch time. So go early - say 9-10am or 2-3pm.
But people love to stay and see the sunset.

Big Beach, Big Dunes, Big Red Lighthouse, Big Memories

By DWIGHT L |

Big Beach, Big Dunes, Big Red Lighthouse, Big Memories... Nice sand, good waves for body surfing, lots of parking, sun was great. My Florida born wife was surprised that you could swim in Lake Michigan :)

Very nice State Park

By aut22ba |

We stayed at the Pineloop, I don’t think the beach sites were that nice, more like a parking lot of RVs. Pineloop was really nice, bathrooms are brand new. The area is very nice too, looking forward to coming back with our son.

A Nice State Park

By Allen_M_54 |

Wonderful very large beach. They have a nice change house. You can only see the lighthouse across the channel, and can not visit the light house.

Green Algae beach

By Lisa R |

Go here every year and this year there was green Algae everywhere in the water. Also, algae was at the Muskegon and Grand Haven beaches. Won’t go back next year.

Beautiful State Park

By Luvs2Travel5914 |

Beautiful beach and lighthouse. But beware, if you go in to watch the sun go down, then be prepared for a long wait to get out of the parking lot. We were in our car to leave and took us an hour to get out. We were in the front row by the beach, and the cars were sometimes lined two deep behind us and did not let any of the cars parked there out. But sunset was beautiful. They have walkways, playground, and modern restrooms. And the harbor was fun to sit by and watch the boats come in. Sand was so soft.

This beach has everything!

By Chris B |

Soft sand, fantastic view, ice cream, & a lighthouse! What more could you want in a beach? We were here late in the day and people came flooding in to watch the sunset... we left before the sun completely set and the line to get in was massive so if you're planning on seeing a sunset here, come early!

Very nice, clean beach

By Susan B |

Highly recommended beach. Even though there were a lot of people, there was plenty of room for everyone. Clean, cool water on white sand beach. With the exception of the diaper laying in the public restrooms, it was overly clean. Only foot shower, no full shower. Food and gift/general store in main building. Lighthouse view was an added bonus.

Soft sand beach and light house

By Dianne H |

Life is good at the beach- as long as you pay the fees or have a pass. The sand is warm, the water is cool and the crowds vary with the weather. Bring food and towels and spend the day in the sun. No shade, so bring your own if needed. Light house is a classic picture place.

Shameful and sad!

By Lee Huckleberry |

After over forty years of camping the park host for week of May 27, 2024 has ruined everything good about the camp experience! Shameful yelling, taking pictures of peoples campsites, standing in road with clipboard stopping cars that just came through guard shack checkpoint fifty feet away. They treated people so disrespectfully it ruined our vacation. Management is not much better, arriving at 2:30 only to be told to leave and come back at 3..so we sat for 20 minutes before other campers rv’s started piling up into main roadway blocking traffic. I would never recommend Holland State Park!
We learned late in week camp host was leaving and new host would be arriving, GREAT we thought, well not so! I believe they were from South Dakota and were a spitting image of the previous.. An elderly couple we’re staying a bit longer and had to move campsites, as the elderly couple were coming back around in their forty foot diesel pusher, the new camp host with clipboard in hand started flailing her arms in the air YELLING WHAT ARE YOU DOING. I felt so bad for these kind people. Never again will I patronize such a place!!

Good

By Vachana J |

We were there for couple of hours but the beach was pleasant and good. We have visited in May so the water was bit cold

Beautiful park

By Codie TenHagen |

Holland state park is beautiful and decent sized, they have bathrooms and a food shack and a nice pier to walk on, parking can be a hassle and a long long walk sometimes and people jumping off the pier causes unnecessary emergencies sometimes , they flag the beach well telling you if the water is safe or not

Short visit

By Clayton_Diner |

We camped at the State campgrounds a short distance away and rode our bikes to the beach to check it out. Nice and clean, the sand was soft, much less course than what we are used to when vacationing in the Carolinas.

Great Beach!

By Matt S |

Growing up with summers at the Atlantic Ocean, it takes a lot for me to enjoy and think highly of a freshwater lake. Well, if one can compare at all, I'd say that Holland State Park beach is a good (temporary) replacement for a salt water beach/location!

The beach here is very wide, with sugar-grain sand, rivalling the side of "coast" beaches. There is only a slight drop off betweent eh beach and water, and the water bottom is extremely sandy and comfortable to walk through. Of course, the temperature is subject to the cold Great Lakes norms, but during our visit in late June, it was relatively comfortable for longer timeframes.

There appeared to be a store/gift shop, and a cafe, right with the beach showerhouses, but due to the pandemic and actions, these were closed during our visit.

A walk to the lighthouse and inlet area also adds a great nautical touch to this beach, and adds in additional acitivites for everyone.

We can't wait to return!

Winter Sunset Summer Dreaming

By burdman79 |

One of my favorite Michigan state parks! A classic with the cute town of Holland with so many good restaurants right around the corner this this a great place to take the family.

Stopped here on a snowy winter day for a sunset.

Beach dau

By Juaco N |

Real nice and clean beach, all summer long i visited tne park every Sunday with my family and we enjoy

Beautiful even in the winter

By Danielle M |

The lake was beautiful, the park is right on the lake with a sidewalk extending almost to the lake. It was cold, but still beautiful.

Great beach

By jkzoo |

Was at oval beach there day before and liked it but this beach was so much better. Large with lots of room even though crowded. Move restrooms with shoppers and changing area.

Great place

By Jen H |

Nice place with nice bathrooms, eatery etc. I love that there is a lot of sand on the beach and plenty of area to walk. It can get crowded on the weekends.

Great visit at the beach just dolphins and bars missing ;-)

By TheDutchMi |

Crystal clear water sand nice and fluffy not crowded on a Monday. Did not pay for parking nobody at the booth so might be free during weekdays not sure. Water good temp. Nice to escape the detroit area beaches for a day.

Beautiful Sunset

By jharty2018 |

Only had time to view the sunset. Would love to spend an entire day there next visit. Went with adult daughter and took many pics of the beautiful sunset. Unsure if parking is free as we parked down the road and walked due to the long line of cars waiting to enter the lot.

Absolutely STUNNING PARK

By jeannette y |

OUR first night in the RV on coast of MICHGAN WE were amazed at
this beautiful beach/park and we had superb BIG BEACH VIEW.. it was
windy, chilly and wild red flag water BUT LOVED it all.......Got to see about
20 gorgeous sailboats in water and all lined up and came slowly in at dusk
all going in canal sailing by the lovely RED Lighthouse.. there were sand dunes
to climb and hammocks.. loved it all..........nice site!!

Great beach

By limila |

We enjoy going here to get some sun and watch the boats go in and out of the channel. Has some trees for shade on the channel also so it is most pleasant. Large Beach area and the water is wonderful.

Nice stop even in spring

By millamy |

Still chilly so we didn’t go in the water. Nice to walk out to the pier and see the lighthouse. Nice clean bathrooms available. Wish it was more pet/dog friendly- not supposed to bring dogs on the beach or pier (although lots of people did without issue, perhaps bc it was off season). Given time of year there was ample parking but no parking available for large vehicles - lots of signs saying only to use one space, including RVs, motor homes, etc. but there were no large pull through spots available for them.

Beautiful evening views

By Bonnie J |

We very much enjoyed our visit here. Walking from the campground was easy and enjoyable. We definitely would visit again.

Great Lake Beauty

By JNMjr |

Even on a cooler than average day in May this beach is a stunner. The famed “Red Lighthouse”, sand, dunes, blue water and a glorious horizon make for a remarkable setting.

Enjoyed the beach!

By Susan Iannucilli |

Really enjoyed this beach! The first time we were there it took at least a half hour to get to the parking area; we got there around 4 pm on a Sunday afternoon. We parked fairly close to the beach. The second time we went we got right in with no charge; we got there Monday around 7:30 pm. This was a great spot to watch the sun set! It was beautiful, the Big Red Lighthouse was beautiful especially when its light turned on!

Beautiful beach, super narrow pier

By MichiganMelissa04 |

This was a beautiful and very wide beach. It had a nice playground and picnic facilities. The bathrooms were not great, but hey, at least there were bathrooms. Note that the lighthouse is ACROSS the channel, so you cannot access it from Holland State Park. There is a pier to walk out on, but it is extremely narrow and slanted so be careful. At the end of the pier, there is a light with graffiti all over it. Not particularly pleasant to look at. But nothing could ruin this lovely beach. A great place to spend the day swimming and picnicking.

Fantastic

By Jennifer D |

Fantastic place to go. Volleyball courts and great beach. There are places to rinse off too. My kids liked the blue path to walk to the beach.

Even on a cold and rainy day.....

By Mkl1979 |

Even a cold windy rainy this is worth a visit, walk through the sand, walk out as far as you can. Yes, we would have taken the dune buggy ride.

Cool day for a Cool Beach

By Hugh |

Really visiting the beach only for the views of "Big Red" (the lighthouse) we were fortunate not to need to pay entrance fees for the state park. The beach is lovely (even with elevated lake levels) but it was quite cool. Perhaps that is why the fee booth was closed. We enjoyed the sunset on a clear cool evening. Got some great pictures. There is a huge parking area and concessions that are busier in summer and on warm days.

Nice Beach

By rkcornwell |

We visited on a very hot day and the sand gets very hot too! Lots of algae in the water but it was still refreshing to walk in.

Lifelong Favorite

By Joanne W |

Big, beautiful beach. I've been coming here since I was a little kid and the sand is always nice and mostly pure and free of rocks and debri. $9 entry fee is good for 24 hours. Large swimming area and decent sized bathhouse/changing area. Only natural lighting in the bathhouse so take a flashlight later in the day.

Heaven

By Janet S |

This is an incredible place with lovely sand beaches, good amenities, clean changing/restrooms, an extensive snack bar with covered seating, but high parking fees ($9).

Beautiful location.

By BeasonKid |

Just spent a couple of hours on the beach. Huge beach area and extremely clean. Really nice souvenier/concession area. Very convenient to downtown Holland. A quick drive and you're at the beach.

Stunning!

By luvstotravel4 |

We came out to the beach to watch the sunset. It was a beautiful, clear, and warm night. There were fishermen on the pier. Looked like nobody was catching anything, but they were having fun. Gorgeous sunset. This is a beautiful beach. I imagine it is very crowded in season. A delightful side trip in Holland.

Soft sand, huge beach area with great amenities

By Jennifer M |

Really big beach area - arrive early as it gets very crowded! Very family friendly - busy. Swim area is marked but still be cautious - no lifeguards and rip tides can be strong. State Park so recreation passport allows entry for free or you can pay for the day/car. Nice restrooms/changing area with concession area that sells food, ice cream, beach necessities (lotion, toys, etc.). We enjoyed walking to the channel and watching the boats enter/depart in front of the lighthouse.

RV parking is a little tight at the beach

By AlnSue |

The beach is tight but the lines are covered with sand so parking is only as big as you could see where. The place is crawling with kids. We took the last spot in the park in a handicapped site close to the bathrooms. We used no facilities except the beach. You need a permit for all your vehicles. Our where the RV, 2 scooters and a car. With noise and kids we left after the first nite

Relaxing

By John A |

Great atmosphere. Relaxed with the family on the beach. Although a windy day, still enjoyed while vacationing.

Amazing Beach

By Amy L |

Nice state park. Contains 3 separate units. The beach is vast, groomed, and gorgeous. The beach campground is nothing more than a parking lot and should be avoided unless that is your schtick. The forest campground is down the road from the beach, has many shaded sites, and nice, modern bathrooms. Avoid the sites by the road and the neighboring restaurant (loud generator or other mechanical sound all night) and stick to the lovely sites in the back of the campground.

Warning: This is a 100% dry campground. No alcohol possession or consumption.

Beautiful!

By weekendgetaways010 |

We needed a day away during the pandemic, so we made the three hour drive to Holland. The Park was busy (we were there from 10-3 on a Saturday) but there was plenty of room for social distancing on the canal side. A beautiful day in a beautiful location.

Big Beach!

By Karen H |

Stopped here to get some pictures of the lighthouse, and what a cute park! There were a few people out walking the sea wall and fishing, but not crowded in the least. The one con was that the regular bathrooms weren’t open yet - but a portapotty on the way out was open for use. Beautiful spot with good parking.

Family vacation

By Julietsjourney2289 |

Best price for parking. Lots of beach. Lots of open swimming area. Great place to watch all kinds of boats and water sports. Has a nice food court area. The bathrooms we well kept and there’s a small playground for small kids to play on.

Beach Day!

By Lynnard86 |

One way in and out, so took a bit to get through line. Not too far of a walk from parking lot. Enough room for the crowds. Sand could use a good raking and I had algae in my suit. Stayed for sunset which was amazing even though cloud was on horizon. I preferred Silver Beach in St. Joseph’s, cleaner beach and water.

Amazing beach

By Kim C |

The waves that day were so big I loved it. You really want to be sure to get there early so you don’t have to wait in the lonnggggg line just to enter the parking lot. We were in it for 40 min it seems. Concession stand was fine. There were beach items for sale too. Will return.

Nice view on the lighthouse

By qqtt |

This beach is not too far from town and has nice white sand. We enjoyed just walking along the shore, and being close enough to town to go for dinner after our walk

A nice beach in Holland

By Simon |

During season, I’m sure this place gets packed. Off season, not so much. But it’s very spacious so it’s easy to get away from groups of people and just find your own little spot. It’s also next to the Big Red Lighthouse, so you have access to viewing that too. A nice beach/park.

Private homes block lake for state park patrons

By Sandy A |

The beach is nice, but I didn’t like that parts of it are closed off because of all the huge private homes around the state park. We picked Holland State park to be by Lake Michigan, but all the beach areas close by are inaccessible to us common folk because of the rich snobs who live on the lake. There are signs posted everywhereto this effect.

Beautiful place to watch the sunset!

By Gwen W |

Beautiful beach to watch the sun set - see a lighthouse - and spend time with family and friends. The beach was very clean and there were nice restrooms as well that were very clean. We loved being there watching a beautiful sunset on a holiday weekend.

Beautiful Beach

By Terri McT |

This was our first visit. Beach was beautiful, room to spread out. Bathrooms were very clean. Enjoyed everything about our trip, took our cooler in along with our umbrella. The only thing to note is online it states there is a day pass available for $9.00, this has been discontinued. You have to purchase a pass good for the season for $18.00 unless you have a recreation pass already! It was worth the money though. We didn’t try the snacks from concession but everything I saw looked good!

Beautiful sunset

By msuchocki |

We visited this state park last week during the Tulip Festival. Besides the wonderful sandy beach, we enjoyed walking out on the pier and getting a closer look at the original red lighthouse. It is also a great viewing spot to catch the sunset over Lake Michigan.

Lovely lake beach

By Lisa G |

Full disclosure is that I am a total ocean beach person, but this was a lovely, large beach and I was pleasantly surprised. There are facilities available for restrooms and food. There is no real shade, so bring an umbrella if that's something you require. There was a significant amount of small plastic trash (ie straws & bottlecaps) strewn about. We followed a suggestion I saw that encourages people to pick up 3 pieces of plastic per person when they leave. Overall, the best of the 3 beaches we visited in the area. Highly recommended.

Felt like Florida beaches!

By M K |

Lovely beaches with convenient parking and restrooms, the beach feels like you are in Florida, with colder water! It was fun to watch the boats drive from the inlet lake out into Lake Michigan.

Love Holland State Park

By SandyVN |

Clean, beautiful, sandy beach. Convenient concession stand. Beautiful beach with great walking along the beach, down the pier, or around the beautiful park.

Great day!

By Laura L |

Took the grandkids here, brought a picnic lunch watched the wind surfers the waves were a little high to swim but enjoyed the beach. They have a play ground for the kids which is awesome!

Clean beach

By Salvador V |

A little crowded but I live in Chicago so not that crowded the kids had a blast I didn't pay the parking lot fee but we found pàrking on the street. Also beaches were clean except for the dogs running around. Enjoy!!

Lake Michigan at its best

By Lewmurray |

A really clean, broad, sandy beach with great parking and concessions. There is a day fee if you dont have a Michigan state park pass. It is also a very popular beach, so all of that beautiful sand and spacious parking can get crowded, so go early and stake out your territory. Great place for beach lovers of all ages, with play ground equipment, beach volleyball, and plenty of shallow water for splashing, wading and relaxing. Stop for ice cream on the way home at Captain Sundae. Can't beat it for a super day.

Nice state park

By Cynthia K |

This is a nice state park. The lighthouse was picturesque & we walked on the pier.
They have a large restroom/changing area/concession building. They sell souvenirs & food/ice cream.

This is a tough park to get into in the warm months. The back up to get in is crazy. The staff at the booths move things along, but the cars were still backed up a mile.

There are 2 campgrounds. The Lake Macatawa campground is across the street from a small beach on the Macatawa Lake. This is a wooded campground. The sites are pretty tight as is usual for a Michigan State Park.
This is where you check in to camp here & at the beach campground. Don't forget or you'll have to turn around & come back!

The best thing about the beach campground is it's closer to Lake Michigan.
The interior sites up to the shower house have full hook up. All others are electric only.
There's one restroom/shower house for the whole campground. The showers are individual & we had no trouble getting one in the late afternoon.
The best campsite is 348. This site gives you a good view of the beach outside your rig. Other good campsites are 349 & 347.

There's beach access from the campground. No dogs or bikes on the beach. Sounds good if it was actually enforced. We saw no one getting yelled at, so go ahead & do what you want!
This campground is entirely on asphalt. You're not allowed to put anything on the sand - including tents! Crazy.

Beach Campground

By knj782 |

This really isn’t a campground but rather a paved parking lot that they added lines and electric to. Sites are very tight and they were sold out when we were there. Showers are in individual rooms and clean. Close walk to the beach but no dogs are allowed on the beach towards the water but they are allowed in the campground.

Amazing Beach with lot of water sports and sand to play around

By Kamal Chhabra |

I have visited Holland State Park Beach in May 2019, during Tulip festival. this was my first ever visit to this beach. I found it really very nice place for outdoor, with family, friends or couple. It is so cool, relaxing and nice place to spend time, do water sports or play around the sand.

We wanted to go to Ottawa Beach in Holland, MI to see the Big Red Lighthouse

By Brice G |

Traffic was backed up nearly a ½ mile on the two lane road into Ottawa Beach – get there early in the day.
Lighthouse is good to look at however it is not all that special that I wanted to wait as long as the traffic line was going to take. Breakwaters walls make for an interesting walk out a ways “into” Lake Michigan. WE had been to the park a few months ago and decided to turn around just as we saw the lighthouse and the pay booth – we were not willing to wait to pay to wait to find a parking spot.

Fun at the beach

By KRISTIN193 |

Visited Holland State Park Beach while visiting Holland. Non-resident admission is $9 per day. There is always ample parking and plenty of room to set up camp on the beach. There is a small playground for kids ages 2-12. The restrooms are generally clean and there is a restaurant where you can get food and ice cream. There are also plenty of benches under the canopy so if you are looking for shade you can sit and just people watch. We love to sit by the channel and watch the boats leave Lake Macatawa and enter Lake Michigan.

Beautiful

By Crystal B |

Our favorite beach in Michigan. Year after year we always make it a point to stop and enjoy the beach. The lighthouses and beautiful boats coming in and out.

Wow, the wind was crazy

By uabericm |

We stopped in to see the sunset and it was beautiful. I’ve never been on Lake Michigan before and wow, the wind was wild.

Camping during tulip time

By Richard D |

This is our second visit to Tulip Time in Holland Michigan. This is our first visit at the state park campground. This weekend is rather chilly so we’re not taking advantage of the beach but what a beautiful campsite for each goers.

Best State Park

By Bob and Jan T |

We love our beach and Big Red lighthouse at Holland State Park! Looking forward to the summer!! It’s great for camping, hiking, swimming, fishing, picnicking or just to watch a gorgeous sunset!!

Beautiful Sand and View

By Glubglubb |

Went on a 72 sunny day. Was a great view of coast and the red lighthouse. Easy parking. Was hoping to walk over to the lighthouse but found there was no access from the beach side as it was on the other side of the channel. Still good for boat watching and pictures, or just relaxing. It was a bit chilly for swimming, but nice for a walk.

Beautiful Park

By Ruth H |

We visited the State Park not knowing what it would be like. The beach area is wonderful. We got to walk out on a pier area and view the beautiful homes and boats that are docked in this area. It was definitely a great find.

What a great Sunset

By John K |

Love the views of Lake Michigan. We got a great nite for a romantic sunset. Park is well kept. Facilities are also excellent. Lots of young couples and families enjoyed the evening but still plenty of privacy. Oh and the SUNSET didn't disappoint either we enjoyed our 46th anniversary vacation in Holland Michigan!

Huge beach

By Jeffrey M |

This is our first time to visit a non-ocean beach and were so pleased. This beach is large and clean. Includes a children’s playground, snack shop and plenty of places to meander and even sit to watch the boats come and go.

Gorgeous Beach

By Diana R |

We spent the weekend in Holland, and visited the State Beach Park. As with the other State parks in Michigan, the sand is soft and clean, as is the water, and the beach is a great stop along our way visiting the dunes of Michigan. Only sorry we didn't come sooner in the year, but we won't make that mistake next year!

Great local beach

By jlynne08 |

Great beach with a great view. The walk way along the waterway was a little flooded during our visit (obviously not the fault of the park but the high water levels). Great walk out along the pier like path, but not good to walk all the way out with real little ones as there is only rails along the first 1/4 of the path or so. Though it seemed to be a favorite for the local duck population ❤️
The huge beach was pretty clean and there is a large play ground for kids. A lot of places to sit on benches and picnic tables and large changing areas along with a nice concession stand. Definitely a great place to spend a warm, sunny afternoon!

popular beach

By Andre A |

Took a day trip to this good sized popular beach. we noticed how busy it is getting near the beach parking and the best time to go would be as early as possible as the line up of cars waiting to get in, can be backed up for a good half hour on this day but once thru the ranger station, parking was no problem. there are a couple lots. the sand was hot on this day in the upper 80's so best to have footwear. there was more litter on the beach than I expected being a state run facility. maybe they don't groom the beach as much as they used to anymore but they know they have a valuable asset in this beach so it would be well worth it to keep visitors coming back by keeping it as clean as possible. there are plenty of grills, tables scattered near the channel and overall is a really nice park. the water is shallow for up to 40 yrds out before it drops off in the designated swim area. there is a large camp store with restrooms. good sights to see all around..one busy park this is.

Windy day but beautiful

By Diann M |

Great views of Red Lighthouse. Playground and beautiful beach. Came back to watch the sunset. Good sized parking lot.

Nice beach

By Pasoporaqui |

Nice beach - there were a lot of people there on a Tuesday night, but it was fun and clean. Mostly family atmosphere and clear water.

A must for wagon-pushing families

By Alyssa S |

This is one of my favorite beaches on Lake Michigan. It has a boardwalk down the beach which is extremely helpful for our wagon, since it doesn't pull through the sand at all. The large restroom is nice, I only wish it had a designated changing room rather than changing in a bathroom stall. The store is great for anything you've forgotten or if you want any souvenirs and new beach toys. The snack stand is great. The beach is large and clean, plenty of parking and they even have spaces to charge electric vehicles.

Pretty Park

By Chuck52310 |

The lighthouse is very pretty and well worth the visit. In summer there is an admission charge into the park.

Amazing Beach!

By HarveyTown |

My husband and I spent a weekend along the shores in Michigan and decided to take the bike trails to Holland State Park. The beach is BEAUTIFUL! The gift shop is cute and friendly. The pier is incredible to walk down and watch local fisherman pull huge fish in. The views are amazing and the channel next to the pier makes for some amazing boat site seeing. CANT WAIT TO GO BACK

Spectacular in stormy weather

By Gorton54 |

We visited here in late October right after a two day rain and wind storm. There were still gale force winds when we visited and the waves were crashing violently. It was very exciting to watch. Front end loaders were busy plowing away sand dunes forming in the parking lot. Quite a contrast to the peaceful summer days we have spent here.

Wide open spaces

By Linda D |

Being our first time in this state park, we were not disappointed. Wide open beach and lots of space to play and roam. The sand was soft and ones feet would sink softly down. Hard to run fast here! Water was awesome, not too warm, but comfortable once one got wet! Refreshing on a very hot day. Beach hats, umbrellas recommended. Great fries at the concession stand. We sat close to the most photographed lighthouse in Michigan. Big Red lighthouse. Plenty of sail boats, yachts, pleasure boats to watch coming and going.

Great place to visit - large beach

By Jennifer R |

Great beach, large area and a cool lighthouse. Definitely worth a visit even if you only have 15 minutes.

Great Beach

By Kelly Cathcart |

This beach is wonderful! The beach was clean and all sand. The lighthouse is right here as well. The cannel is on one side of the beach so you can watch boats come in and out. There is a bathhouse with restrooms and benches with lake views. This beach is great all day to sunset. it is about a 15-minute drive from downtown Holland, and worth the little effort.

BEAUTIFUL, CLEAN, VERY LARGE BEACH!

By FurtherOnDownTheRoad |

Reviewed this beach last year when we just walked around, sat on benches and enjoyed the view. This year we visited with all our beach gear and trekked on down close to the water, found a nice spot - with a view of the Big Red Lighthouse - and spent the day from afternoon till sunset. Though you do have the $9.00 non-resident daily admission fee, this is a clean and beautiful beach - and large! There is a nice wide path from the parking area to the beach, so if you're using a wheeled wagon for your beach gear, it's a breeze to cart it all. And much easier walking than on the sand! The area where the restrooms are located also has a few shops, one with all kinds of things, including souvenirs. The restroom is large and clean and well lighted. It might just be our new favorite beach.

Lovely

By gringatx |

We parked in the lot next door and walked along the river to the beach area just to take a look. It's really pretty and would be so fun to ride bikes to the beach. They do charge to park inside the park. It was packed around 10 am on a Sunday.

Beautiful BIG beach!

By Susan M |

This was our first trip to Michigan and we were shocked by how large their beach was. It was beautiful!

Great Beach with amenities!

By EB Brown |

The Beach at Holland State Park is really nice. It’s a wide, open space with nice, soft sand. The beach also has a pavilion which houses changing areas and restrooms. There is also a snack bar, so you don’t have to tote your own lunch in unless you want to. A 1 day access is $9 that you pay for parking. I think that’s very reasonable considering how nice it is and that you’re supporting a state park.

Parking right at the beach is a plus. There’s a pier and light house for photo ops. We spent a very nice day there.

Great find!

By Stephanie C |

Great beach! Our dog was welcomed on left side of pier. I was clean and has the iconic red lighthouse. Great place to spend an afternoon.

Beautiful view

By Paola Ortiz O. |

Seeing Lake Michigan accompanied by small mountains and also snow, has its charm. In winter it is quite windy and cold, but if you are prepared you will do well. For me it was awesome to see snow and sand together, plus the vastness of the lake. The red lighthouse also looks beautiful with the sun illuminating from behind. You have to be careful when walking on the pier because it is slippery.
The bad: I didn't like finding scraps of garbage in the water and sand. I took some plastic pieces with me. As a suggestion, if you want to make a change carry a plastic bag and collect what you can of trash. We always have to leave things better than we found them.

Nice clean beach ALCOHOL FREE

By Doug V |

Nice beach with beautiful sunsets, but unfortunately does not allow either dogs or alcohol. Would have liked to bring my dog and have a beer at sunset, otherwise I’d give it five stars.

Poor Management + Misleading Website = Disappointing Visit

By John M |

Horribly managed park. To save money they do not staff the parking booths, but then come by your car later and make you drive to the Ranger's station to pay for your parking permit. And Ranger's Station was impossible to find. Their decision to not staff the parking booths should not lead to an inconvenience for the campers.

Also, they say on their website that they are pet-friendly. When you get there you realize that pets are not allowed on the sand or in the water. Pets aren't usually that fond of asphalt.

Overall a very annoying experience. We won't be back.

Nice beach, water was little dirty this time.

By Michael M |

We have visited many times over the years. Never disappoints. This year the water seemed a little dirtier than years past. There was a fair amount of human garbage in the water. There was food, cigarette wrappers, plastic bags. The water was high and there was a fair amount of wind that could have forced this close to the beach. Overall the water was very nice, just a little dirtier than in years past.

Great beach

By Justin C |

The beach is very fun to play at and go into the water, plus the kids had so much fun. You will love it there.

Beautiful beach

By Vicki A |

It is a beautiful beach. The beautiful white sand it ...... beautiful. Great family beach. Not crowded at all and we were there in August!

Applause at sunset

By idzilla |

Holland beach is a massive beach with nice accommodations and parking for guests as well
as a picturesque lighthouse. Summer sunsets are a must and often trigger applause as the sun sinks into Lake Michigan.

Little Red Lighthouse

By Tebbe R |

Very windy and chilly but worth the sightseeing. Took a ton of pictures, enjoyed the walk on the beach

Clean and Fun

By SallySTravel |

This beach was beautiful! I recommend getting there early to avoid long lines. We got there at 10:30 with no wait. We got front row seats. Kids loved playing in the sand...water was cold, but it has to do with the wind direction. There’s a great concession area as well.

Classic Beach

By WHWmke |

Holland State Park Beach is every bit as nice as the popular Florida beaches. Soft clean sand, clean Lake Michigan and well maintained facilities made the visit easy for my family. No alcohol allowed. While I would enjoy having a beer on the beach, this policy likely contributed to the peaceful environment.

It is beautiful and well kept.

By Gary M |

Took a bike ride to the park just to take a quick look. Stayed for a few hours instead. Large, spacious beach was VERY clean and well kept. the location along the river and lake frontage was really nice.

Almost made it in.

By Greg A |

Tried getting in on Saturday afternoon, turned away. Went up the coast to Tunnel Beach. So crowded it was elbow to elbow, head to toes. Not fun. Came back early Sunday to Holland Beach, $16 ouch.

365 days a year!

By 574ronalde |

This is a destination for nature lovers any time of year if you are in the west Michigan area. The scenery changes with the weather. You can find plenty of peaceful places to sit an relax, or for more exercise, you can take a walk on the pier. Its always busier in the summer, but there is plenty of room for everyone; families, children, senior citizens and pets. A great place to watch a thunderstorm come in in the summer or to watch the boats go in and out of the channel. Maybe just a place to get away from it all. Do some people watching.

Wonderful Childhood Memories

By SharonJane157 |

I grew up in West Michigan, and spent a lot of time at Lake Michigan beaches - including Holland State Park. If you have never seen a Michigan beach, you don't know what you are missing! The water, the dunes, the lighthouses!!! Do yourself - and your children - a favor, and make some Michigan beach memories.

Holland Beach Visit

By CintiKath |

We arrived in Holland on a Thursday evening and ventured to the beach to watch the sunset. There are two lines to enter, an express line for yearly and one for daily passes. The line moved quickly and parking was close to the beach. It had a nice concession area with many flavors of soft serve and slushees. The view of the “Big Red” lighthouse across the causeway at sunset was beautiful. A side note - there was a bus of students from Hope College that arrived at the volleyball courts. They were the most well mannered and polite college students I have been around.

Fun place for the family!

By Meceebee |

Great place for the family to spend a hot summer afternoon cooking off. Grills for cooking our, volleyball nets and even a hard walkway for easier access to the water!

Always clean and beautiful

By Bdrummer33 |

Great view of the channel, lighthouse, and Lake Michigan. Long beach to set up by for some sun or benches near the channel to watch the sail boats and occasional barges come in. There are a lot of sticks and pebbles in the sand especially near the channel.

Beautiful day

By SteveMatthewP |

Nice area. Friendly people. Great weather. About what we expected. We would be happy to come back in the future.

Big large beach

By gphs63 |

We had to walk probably 2/3 mile to the beach. Beautiful beach, concession stand fantastic , big changing room. The beach is enormous. Friendly staff

Wonderful clean beach

By Simpsoan |

This beach is great! Easy to get to, lots of parking. Very nice playground. Great view of lake and lighthouse. Just a long way to walk in sand to get to water. Bathrooms could be cleaner too but nice to have so many in the building. We visited during COVID pandemic and saw a bunch of picnic tables stacked up but would be nice to have more places to sit/ eat. Very relaxing location. Would visit again for sure!

Nice views from a sandy beach.

By GypsyMoo |

The sandy beach is large with fine, brown sand. The parking lot is adequate for a large number of cars. The restrooms were abysmal! No locks on the stalls, cigarette butts, filthy floors and soiled toilet seats. The entire pavilion looked as if it had never been cleaned and is certainly not maintained. The mosquitoes were bad the day we were there, but I would think without mosquitoes and without using the facilities, sitting on the beach would be very pleasant and on a hot day, the water looked like it could be nice to swim.

Nice Beach

By SharonB231 |

This is a very nice sandy beach. There are restrooms and concessions here. The lighthouse known as Big Red is located here and you can walk to it from the beach. There is plenty of parking. A very nice beach!

Almost

By califcasl |

Visiting here was almost as good as going to a "real" beach. Who am I kidding, it was just as good, and there were no large waves to deal with.

No Visit to Holland is Complete without Visiting

By Douglas V |

No visit to Holland, MI is complete without driving out to Holland State Park, one of the best beaches on Lake Michigan. Take a walk out on the boardwalk, and enjoy the great views of Big Red and the Van Andel (one of the founders of AMWAY) home just behind it. Put your feet in the fresh water, or if it is summer take a swim. The water here gets into the 70s, which is warm for the Big Lake. Beware if walking out on the breakwater: the lake is high, and so the slippery algae is growing on the surface. Best time to walk out on the breakwater is when the sun is setting.

Family beach day

By Mo11k |

Clean & nice facility

Dressing room, bathrooms and easy beach access.

Lighthouse is pretty and fun to watch the boats heading to the marina

Plenty of Room for Everyone!

By GrandCayman123 |

Huge sandy beach with plenty of space to enjoy the day. Water was pretty cold. My daughter said it was not so bad once your feet went numb from the cold water. Fairly clean. My husband picked up several sharp objects and we had a hard time finding a close trash can to throw these items away. Beautiful view. You can walk by the Big Red Lighthouse but you can not enter it. There is a little food place that also sold all sorts of beach essentials. That same building had a nice covered area where you could sit out of the sun but still enjoy the beautiful view. Several people were fishing off of the dock. There were picnic tables and various benches in the sun as well. The women's bathroom there was in pretty bad shape. Of the three stalls, one was out of order, the second had a broken lock and the third was just not clean. Some state funds definitely need to be appropriated to fix up that bathroom facility. Other than that, definitely worth a stop.

Great beach

By Lori L |

We love this beach! It gets a bit crowded on the weekends, but it is big enough that you can always get a good spot

Family vacation

By ransack2 |

Holland State Park Beach has a huge Sandy beach area, concession stand with a shop for all your beach needs, clean restrooms and changing rooms. This area of Lake Michigan has a Sandy bottom and is shallow for a good distance making it ideal for young children.
There’s also a long pier out to a lighthouse along with a area you can watch the boats go in and out.
Highly recommend!

Beautiful, big, clean beach

By Heather S |

Huge beach so there was plenty of room for everyone even on the busy day when we visited. Nice place for changing and to clean off sandy feet.

Great Beach but always busy

By Mike B |

One of the best beaches around. If you are going, arrive early. During busy times the line gets very long to get in. This is the only reason I don't give it 5 stars. Right next to Big Red Lighthouse and can watch all the boats coming in and out to Lake Michigan. Playground for kids, beach volleyball courts. Food available for purchase. No dogs allowed. Much like being at the ocean without the sharks or salt.

Great sandy beach.

Love the large beach and view of the lighthouse and sandy bluff. I love the west side of the state and Lake Michigan. Pretty drive from Holland with views of beautiful homes. A beautiful area.

Cold but gorgeous view

By Knicole S |

This beach is really nice! I'd never been to an inland beach before. I thought it would be lacking, but it was gorgeous! The only weird thing was that it was too cold to swim, and too cold and windy to walk the beach for any length of time. I might try coming back later in the summer. We walked on the pier over the water as well, and that was so cool! There was a small fee of $11 for entry, but it was well worth it. They also have several shelters, some public restrooms, and a restaurant, so plenty of good accommodations. The only thing I could find was a place to wash off my feet after walking in the sand, but I suppose that was on me for not bringing a towel. Definitely recommend.

Awful (lack of) check in process. Park is lovely

By me |

This review is for the beach campground at holland state park. The park itself is good and well used. Check in process is a disaster. Unlike most campgrounds there are no directions. Period. None in the confirmation nor at the entrance. Check in is at 3. Period. So we were there with a couple hundred of our closest friends at 3. So once you sit in line on the main road, you finally enter one of 4 Check in lanes. Get out of your vehicle and stand in line. If the person in front of you checks in after you, we'll too bad. You have to wait for everyone in the queue to check in and move. Then you must serpentine through vehicles to get back to the main road and travel down the road to the beach campground. Had enough yet? There are no directional signs to get to your camping spot. And you're towing a long trailer. The campsites are asphalt. I guess most people are regular visitors and know the ropes. But when I asked for specific directions, the response was "oh, you can't miss it".

Summer getaway

Beautiful beach. Restrooms, changing rooms, beachfront cafe. Boardwalk for wheelchairs and people with physical limitations. Also area to park and watch all the beautiful boats going in and out the channel. Great place to spend the day!

Great place to decompress following traffic lines

By TheFamGuy1 |

A favorite beach. Sit on a bench and watch the boats come and go into the lake. And enjoy the large beach. Parking is a serious issue. Come very early or late in the day to use the lots. Have a Michigan Recreation sticker for entry.

Long weekend getaway

This beach was fun and relaxing. Even though the water was chilly it was nice to sit on the beach and watch the boats. Can’t wait to come back and bring out kids.

Great Beach!

Large, clean beach with lots of space and things to do. The main building houses restrooms, food/concession area, changing rooms, picnic tables, grills, kid’s play area & sand volleyball area. Fun for all ages!

Annual "watch the boats" trip to Holland Beach

By Kathy T |

We love Holland Beach so much we come back every year! The beach is big and clean. The cafe, changing rooms and restrooms are cleaned regularly as well. This weekend however, the sinks in the woman's bathrooms were not working, but they did have portable sinks outside to use! Even when the beach is packed like it was this weekend, there is still plenty of room. There are many tables and benches to sit at and if you get there early (or get lucky), you can sit it your car and watch the beach or boats. We sit on the channel side and watch the many boats that go out and come in all day long. There are many picnic tables, benches and shade trees, or bring your own chairs like we do.

Cold weather, but huge sand beach with views

By Nancy T |

It was cold and rainy, but we stopped here to see the lighthouse and to show my granddaughter Lake Michigan!

Too many folks on too little beach

By Melisa K |

Way overcrowded, had some trash on it. The water to wash off your feet was turned off. A little green slime in the water (algae I assume).

We had paid online for RV camping in the State Park Campground, and when we got there, they hit us with another $9 day use facilities fee. What the heck? When you pay to stay in a state park, there is no way to avoid being in the state park. This was like bait and switch on the price.

$9 for a beach to share with 2000 of my closest friends..... nah.

Sunny November Day Not Wasted

By Devon B |

The weather was beautiful the sand is just clean and soft. The water was sparkling and blue. Plenty of parking. The bathrooms were open which was nice being off-season. Of course the big red light house was beautiful. Wind surfers were surfing which was great to watch. Walked out to the entrance of the channel. The only reason that I gave it four stars is because visitors to the park we’re not wearing masks during Covid.

Fun Day at the Beach

By ozark_Roxy |

If you're planning to spend a few hours to the whole day at the beach, it's worth every penny of the entrance fee ($10 when we visited). The beach is big, clean and friendly. There was plenty of space to sun, get wet, walk out to the end of the breakwater and change back into dry clothes at the end. If you're just going to check it out, but not stay long, park outside of the entrance and walk in on the trail that follows the channel from the lake.

Beautiful beach, ample parking.

Love sitting and relaxing on the beach. The only item is the bathrooms could be updated a bit and fix locks on the doors, other than that, it is a great place to visit.

beautiful beach

big beautiful beach, hope that in the summer we can all be back here enjoying the fourth of July and eating ice cream

Very impressed

Wow, lovely beach with great amenities! My first worry, parking, was eliminated with the Michigan Recreation Pass. $16/year for vehicles registered in MI for beach-front parking (plenty at noon on a beautiful June Sunday) or $9 for out of state/day. Bathrooms modest but sufficient, loved the changing rooms and foot rinse. Clean beach, plenty of room for our blanket even with a large crowd. Water pristine! Wow! No lifeguards so watch kids, but hundreds of kids in water. Loved the ice cream shop; visited there every day. Employees so friendly. Nice benches under shade for when you need a break from sun. Huge bonus was walking along the pier out into the lake. Nice to see boats and a mansion up on the hill. Relaxing at its finest. Thanks Holland!

It's gorgeous - Well Kept - Decent Crowd

By Mac Richardson |

This beach is bar far one of the most beautiful in Michigan. Lake Michigan sunsets are unlike anything you've ever seen. Generally this place is pretty well kept. There's only been once where I've felt like there was a decent amount of litter but the next time we went it was clean. Bathroom's are ok but could use some love. Otherwise, it's a very fun place to swim and relax.
