Fun tourist place

By GlobeTrotting824708 |

Camped on Homer a Spit for a few days. Lots of shops and restaurants, and a good base for a variety of activities. Definitely made for tourism, but it is beautiful. Nice view across the bay, can see a glacier.

Nice beach town

By LadyRouge |

This is a nice spot but was overrun w people the day we went. Ate at a great seafood place and did the shops. If we were staying longer would have rented bikes but we were mainly in Homer to go to Katmai.

Homer Fun Zone

By Curt S |

Great restaurants, nice little shops, friendly locals, great views, and diverse activities to enjoy in. Refreshing walk along the beach and harbor.

A great place to visit

By LSUTraveller |

Wanted to come to Homer, after hearing and reading so much about it the past few years. Wish we had planned a longer stay. Really excellent restaurants and exploring options. Really nice walk along the spit road or beach. Lots of shops and places to eat.

Great to visit.

By Jerry K |

I"ve been there several times but still love the place. Plenty to do, see and shop. Many places closed after 2020.

Alaska

By nantmn54 |

Great area- even in the rain. Lots of shops, food, fish area has sea lions. Boats come in and out, signs inform of high tide and how to recognize.

Nice place

By G783CCjuliem |

Homer Spit is a need to see on a visit to Alaska. However it is very touristy and crowded. Great souvenir shops and good eats. Easy access to fishing boats.

Beautiful, unique.

By Teresa S |

Beautiful, unique. Take the time to stop here if you are in Alaska. Some of the best fishing and beach walking in Alaska.

Teenagers love the spit

By Mary Helen S |

The HomerSpit is an interesting place to visit. It has numerous shops and restaurants. Our teens like visiting the swing that is under some of the shops. You can also walk along the beach or the sidewalk and see numerous birds. All water taxis for Kachemak Bay take off from the small boat harbor on the spit.

Honeymoon in Homer

By Rebecca H |

My husband and I had the best time on our honeymoon in Homer, Alaska. The Spit is charming and artsy with excellent food up and down. Highly recommend!!

Not what it used to be.

By mdcwa |

Visited the Homer Spit. Lots of artsy shops to visit. If visiting by cruise ship a free shuttle bus was provided from the dock to the other side of the boat harbor to the spit. You can also walk from the port to the spit (approximately 15-20 minutes).

We first visited the spit about 25 years ago. It is certainly more commercialized now.

Watch the chaos as the tide brings in the Salmon

By davidsN4998XT |

One of the must see sites in Homer is to time the incoming tide as it brings in the Salmon and fisherman crowd the banks to catch what they can during fishing season.

It was Okay

By Kelly D |

I knew it was a tourist spot and that most of the charters leave from there but was disappointed that most of the shops except for 3 sold item you could find at Ross or Marshalls and not local. The 3 places that had native and local artist were great and the prices to me were mostly fair. Wish I could remember their names but they're easy to find.

Magical

By Kari S |

This place is so hard to describe. It felt like we were visiting real Alaska, not a tourist trap. We stayed at an airbnb above the Salt Company and it was magical. We loved it as much as Denali!

Must do in Homer!

By 907JLeMay |

Walking the Spit combines time spent in the beautiful outdoors, ocean breeze, cool shops to explore, and tasty food. There’s a nice boardwalk.

Check it out

By Kecia R |

We stayed at the end of the spit, but even if you're not staying there, go check out the shops and the views.

Funky spot with plenty to see and do !

By DJM66 |

Dropped down, had a drink at Land's End where we enjoyed some birdwatching and even spotted a sea otter. Wandered through the shops, had some fish and chips, took in the Sawlty Dog and just enjoyed the atmosphere.

A little disappointed, but still worth half a day or so to explore.

By MTC |

I had heard a lot about the spit, but was pretty disappointed in what it is. A few boardwalks/shops with mostly overpriced touristy crap and mediocre quality restaurants. The shops that did have artsy stuff were just OK... again, I was kinda expecting more based on what I'd heard.

The other thing that sucked was about half the shops were closed on Sunday-Tuesday. We were there around the solstice (late June) so I was shocked to see this as the season is short enough here as it is.

When the sun is out and the wind isn't howling, it is of course gorgeous. Parking is tough to come by, and yes... lots of campers.

Take in the Spit

By Shahna D |

Anyplace that is named "spit" is a must see. I still don't know why it's named that but it's a must do experience in Homer. Here you will find Very quaint water side tourist souvenir gift shops and restaurant. They are all somewhat over priced but expected in a tourist area. It's fun to walk around the shops, stop in for a coffee or drink or food or gift hunting.

Didn't quite find the charm

By Barbara G |

Perhaps we were a little too early in the season. Many shops were closed. Free parking was nice for the day.

Plenty to look at! Homer offers options.

By Tamra S |

Homer has something for everyone. If you like restaurants, shopping or taking in the sights regardless of the weather, Homer Spit has alot to offer.

Lots to see and do

By Debra H |

There are many places to shop and eat along the spit! So many places to eat and shop. Many international types of food to choose from - and different type of shops to browse.

Nice area

By Jurgen B |

We liked our little walks here, the restaurants, the shops, and especially the sea otters. You need a car for it. Nice beaches too.

Love love love this place!!

By Susan |

I loved the shops and area and everything about it! People are very friendly and nice at every store I went to. Would love to stay close to this area!!!

Quaint shops and eateries

By luckyv |

This is a nice spot to walk and take in the shops and scenery. Many of the eateries have very limited hours and are closed some days. Those that are open are very busy, so plan accordingly. Parking near the shops is tricky, but there are large lots toward the end of the spit and it's not that far of a walk. Be sure to walk all the way down to the end of the spit for a view of the Gulf of Alaska and the beach area. It's amazing.

Homer Spit, a Must Visit in Homer

By JamesD007Travels |

Home to the Homer fishing fleet and charter boats. A must see when you visit Homer. A great place to get a fishing charter boat!

Not Just Cheesy Souvenir Shops

By PrMichaelM |

The Homer Spit exceeded my expectations. I thought it would be full of cheesy souvenir shops. There is a little of that but mixed with some very nice shops and restaurants. The views are great, parking was accessible for us and you can walk the beach if you like. Don’t miss it in Homer.

Must Visit

By westphillyboy |

Cute shops and restaurants. Beautiful views of the bay. Cool area to walk around during your stay in Homer.

Loved the Spit

By LizellaTraveler |

It was so beautiful. Great views all around. We saw a bit of everything from large ships in the harbor, birds nesting on the bridge, lovely views of the Ocean

Great place to Explore

By CarD |

We love just walking around and exploring the beaches. This year we took the kids surf casting by Lands End. Saw eagles up close (they will steal your bait). Speaking of bait, if you want to surf cast, you will need herring, a heavy weight, and split line thing. We purchased them at the Sportsman spot on the spit. They can be spendy so go prepared before hand.

really love the homer spit

By agallagher65 |

Love Homer and especially this area , as a matter of fact will be coming here twice in the next month so much diversity and love to walk the beach and find treasures or just watch the water and hustle and bustle of harbor. always try to get here every summer .

Fishing trip

By Justin Garrett |

What a gem. I would not go to Alaska without visiting Homer Spit, great fishing, amazing views. Great food and really really nice people.

Go for it

By Ryan W |

It's cool to drive to the end. It's cool to drive around and see the boats. Swing by the saloon or check out the cool little shops along the way. I'm definitely glad I went in the off season. I'm sure it'd be a bugger to navigate in the summer.

Great visit! Beautiful!

By allaboutrescuedogs |

My first visit to Alaska and so glad I went to Homer Spit! Great shops, amazing scenery. Great wildlife viewing too! A definite stop if you in the area

Homer Spit

By steelergirl87 |

Homer Spit has some gorgeous scenery of the Kenai Mountains and Kachemak Bay. The town itself has gone a bit too touristy and was extremely crowded. But we still enjoyed it - especially just hanging out on the beaches watching the seagulls and sea otters. Other than Bishop's Beach (when at low tide), the beaches are not sandy. They are stony which is great for those who like to collect rocks as souvenirs. we met some lovely shop owners (extra shout out to Patty at the SeaLion) and restaurant people.

Cool area

By Paul A |

A couple of really good restaurants here
Some shops
And you can camp at edge of beach for 20.00
Neat little area

Relaxing and Awe Inspiring!

By TCB |

Just beautiful, and pictures don't do it justice when you are standing there looking at the mountains, water, and shoreline!

More than Halibut

By Marc W |

While visiting the Kenai Peninsula...most come to Homer to take the challenge to deep sea fish for Halibut...but the Spit is an eclectic mix of small shops and restaurants...Check out the Salty Dog Bar with its wall to wall dollar bills and its iconic light house architecture...and of course gat a picture of the large Halibut hook.

Big group

By AlaskaDO |

We brought a bunch of kids down for the Haunted Hickory. Great time and cool views from the pier. Wonderful Homer event.

Touristy Spit

By Craig A |

The Homer Spit is a really unique place that has something to offer to everyone I think. There are a variety of little shops that sell similar things, but you can find locally made goods as well as pricey items like jewelry and clothing etc. We stayed on the Spit for three nights enjoying the views and nature. The weather, even on a "hot" day can be pretty chilly with the winds. It's much cooler at high tide. Dress in layers but enjoy the surf and exploring the tide pools.

NOTHING TO SEE

By J K |

Don’t understand all the positive reviews. There is absolutely nothing to see there. The main drag is flanked on both sides by booths selling tours, abandoned junk (cars, various metal parts, etc.), and some restaurants. Of course the views of the water is beautiful. But you don’t need to go to the Spit for the view because gorgeous views of the water are everywhere in Homer.

Fun!

By MinnesotaRandy |

Fun place to explore and people watch. Lots of great restaurants and shops along the spit. Tons of star fish during low tide near The Landing.

Unique Area

By Delbikeman |

Worth the visit - especially if you want to camp/RV for the night. Lots of little shops and food places. Eagles frequently visit. Otters in the water. Halibut Fishing capital of the world - massive number of fishing boats.

Homer tourist attraction

By FS11F |

Small strip of land that extends into the bay. There are shops, restaurants, hotels, tourism and fishing companies and a huge pier with many boats. Place to walk along the beach, watch the fishermen, buy fish and have a coffee.

Very Interesting

By Roxanne F |

This is a must see area in Homer. You can walk the beach, camp on the beach, eat, shop, and get out on the water from the Homer Spit. Learn some of the history and be sure and read about the "Bird Lady".

Heaven in Homer

By Peter E |

A short 15 minute drive from Old Town Homer to the end of a long peninsula called the slip is an amazing beach full of warn round stones of textures and sizes and drift wood that is a slice of heaven. The wild bird life include sea gulls and yes, eagles! This was my first time here and two eagles where together on a large tree stump. They flew right over us and hovered, swooped and soared over the land and sea. Truly an breath taking experience!

Beautiful

By Myrna S |

Stayed in a nearby ocean RV park had bad luck it was raining for 2 days we left because of the weather. But a great spot to stay and enjoy the scenery of the mountains a plus.

Nothing to rave about

By KatielouAustralia |

A rather unispiring narrow finger of land jutting into the bay. Some cute buildings with most shops aimed at getting the cruise ship dollars. Being late in the seaso,n there were sales everywhere.

Lots of nice shops and places to eat

By Robert G |

Took the trolley from the Aspen Suites to the spit. Walking there is 8 miles one way. Selection of gift shops and places to eat. One person was out parasailing while we ate and you can see the halibut fishing boats out in the bay. There is a beach area to walk on as well. The Coast Guard has a large tender buoy ship here and a small work building.

Interesting, mostly tourist trap

By Will6468 |

Commercial and private boat harbor with incredible views.

Fun to visit but for the most part, nothing special or inexpensive, other than the views, which are great.

Have fun, but don’t miss the other interesting places in the Homer area.

Lots of little shops.

By Kathryn F |

So many fun little shops. No place to park. Very crouded. We parked far away and walked. Couldn't be any closer to the ocean. In fact ocean is on both sides of the spit. Guess that's the definition of a spit. Oh heck just Google it friends. Fresh sea air folks.

We were testing out "RV's"

By akaalfred |

I'm not one for big crowds and this was during tourist season, but remained calm and respectful to those visiting our state of Alaska. I did go back in the tween season and had a great time.

Rv sight

By jquick67 |

Parked ride by the bay. We can see a nest with Eagles in it. The water is so very colorful. The tide is going in & out. It’s so peaceful! Otters & sea lions swimming in the mornings.

Awesome

By Lori H |

My favorite part of Alaska. The sea air, the , the Spit. Loved it! You get a little of everything, the mountains, wildlife, sea, friendly people. I can see why people live here

A Top Getaway!

By Tyler Ray |

The Homer Spit is one of my favorite getaways in Alaska. As an Alaskan resident, I love basking in the beauty of the ocean backdropped by the snow capped mountains. Walk the many boardwalks to find food, treats, and treasures. Stop in at one of the many charters and book a fishing trip or a sea kayak adventure. Cruise on down to the end of the Spit and watch the seagulls flock around the fisherman while the Eagles perch stoically above. If you grab a fishing license you can walk down to the water a try your hand at fishing for some black cod. If you are camping in an RV you can find many campsites available from the start of the Spit to the middle of the Spit. All sites with views of the harbor, ocean, and mountains. They have bathroom access with running water. There is a walk-in tent camping area at $20 a night. You can’t drive on the beach, but you can park across the street in the public parking (as long as you are not in an RV).
From the camping areas you are free to enjoy long walks on the beach combing for rocks and sea life. Walk along the harbor and view all the different boats docked in there. Sometimes you’ll catch the Time Bandit from Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch.
If camping on the beach be aware of the high tide line. Homer has some of the largest tides in the world. Don’t get caught camping below the high tide point. You’ll be safe camping with the rest of the line of tents.
Quick note, for the best shot of the Homer Spit head on up to Skyline Drive and park at the pullout near the radio towers. You’ll get the perfect shot of the Spit to show your friends and family.

A must see, like no other

By Eldar R |

Sooooooo beautiful.
Many art, stores, restaurants, atmosphere.
Rougg water on one side and calm on the other.
For a perfect afternoon

Love the Spit!!!

By debbie c |

Great place to visit!!! We love the shops, enjoy the food, people, and fishing. There is always someting to see and do.

Must see if you’re into bears at all. One and a half hour float plane ride in four or five hours with the Bears and one

By Sandi H |

Brooks Falls. Must see if you’re into bears at all. One and a half hour float plane ride in four or five hours with the Bears and one and a half hour float plane ride back. It was amazing watching the Bears catch the spawning salmon

Don't Miss the Spit

By jim128 |

The Homer Spit is a great place full of little shops that will offer you that perfect Alaskan gift for self or others. Some shops offer exclusive works by local artists, which is always nice. One of our favorite artists is Leslie Klaar, whose shop is on the spit; stop in and look at her art, you won't be disappointed! The Spit is walkable from town although on windy / rainy days that can be a challenge. If you get there and are too tired to walk back, there is a Trolley that runs on a regular schedule to and from Homer. Food is good, and as this is the Halibut capital of the world, don't miss the chance to have fresh, and I mean fresh, halibut on your salad, sandwich, or fish & chips.

Something for everyone!

By Lori C |

After a wonderful day trip, on a bus, we were ready to walk around. The bus dropped us off at The Salty Dog and told us we could either walk a mile back to our ship or take the shuttle from here again. We walked along the shopping areas and bought a few items, then went to the beach area and walked along the shore taking lots of photos. Then had a few cold ones at The Salty Dog. Went behind the Dog to marina area and sat on a bench and watched boats coming in and out. Then, we got on the shuttle and went to the cruise drop-off and walked over to the side where we watched a million birds flying around, calling, fighting, playing. We again sat and watched the boats going in and out of the channel into the bay. Great photos, beautiful sites.

What's all the fuss?

By Judy B |

Granted we weren't fishing or camping and only went for an ok dinner, but I failed to see the appeal except a very pretty location.

Must Check It Out!

By cooker72 |

Interesting area…. Lots of shops and restaurants ! A real plus was seeing lots I’d bald eagles on the beach behind some of the shops! Parking was not bad….but the town was not busy!

Alaska Cruise

By Rae R |

We took the hop on hop off excursion, offered by the cruise line.
DON'T waste your time. They stopped at 4 stops with NONE of the
stops even close to the sites they claimed.
Biggest waste of money

Cool location

By Rick A |

A great place to visit while in or near Homer. The scenery is beautiful. There are plenty of restaurants to quell your appetite. There are also a bunch of shops if you want to purchase some local Art or souvenirs.

A very busy place!

By aaronbaros |

We toured the spit and ate at a couple of restaurants over our stay. Loads of tourist type shops and places to get some trinkets. Not a bad spot to stop if you want to get an ice cream cone and go for a walk on the beach.

Great place for everyone to find something to do!

By Patricia F |

A very unique place! Multiple campgrounds on both sides of the Spit. 2 hotels at end of Spit as well. Walking on the beach or along the boat harbor is a good way to wind down.

Beautiful setting

By jpa2smh |

Spent several days in homer doing a bear excursion with “Sasquatch bear adventure “, and just enjoying the beautiful seaside town . We found some souvenirs in the cute shops on the spot and ate lunch one day . Truly a fun place to go . The beautiful scenery also all around the bay is hard to jot appreciate.

Unique area full of shops, and fishing boats and campgrounds

By jima800 |

We spent three days camped on the Spit in our motor home.
Lots to do and to see and if your a fisherperson you are in the perfect place.
Enough shops to explore for a day and restuarants to keep you well fed.
Very touristy, but still fun, And the 20 foot tides are simply amazing...

Okay for a visit...

By Yog-Sothoth |

The Homer Spit is the jumping off point for a bunch of adventures, and has a couple of good restaurants. A lot of RV camping here. If Alaska leads the nation in dirt piles, Homer leads Alaska in same.

If you go to Homer you have to go to the Spit

By shirleymWV |

Many unique places to see on the spit. Just sitting there looking at the scenery is worth the drive there. Good place for bird watching.

Great Place to visit

By llklinger |

We walked the Spit the day after our Halibut Charter. What an intriguing place! The shops were quaint and the people were so laid back, it felt like you were among friends!

Fantastic wildlife and landscape photography available

By John D. |

While the Mrs. visited the many shops, I captured eagle, otter and landscape shots 360 degrees around the spit. Loved it!!

Fun times!

By Jill |

This reminded me of a boardwalk at the Jersey shore. On one side, all the shops and restaurants are on stilts above the water and you walk a boardwalk to get to them. It's a cute spot. You can access the beach/water easily. It is much cooler out there due to being in the middle of water. Definitely worth the trip out to the spit!

Little Town with a BIG VIEW!

By Carrie |

What a great little town with an amazing view! Went to Homer during Labor Day. What fun! All the gift shops and most restaurants were in their final days so we got some special buys. We had to keep returning to the spit day after day to watch the ships and watch the sunset. AMAZING!

Halibut fishing in Homer

By alphatazmaniac |

Great day with Captain Trevor aboard the Wild Thing. Thank you to Barb at Inlet Charters! Easy to book and amazing time fishing!

Something for everyone

By shmohney |

Just about anything you'd want to do in the Homer area, you can do on the Spit, as long as you understand that in some ways, it doesn't have much more charm than Gatlinburg TN at its most touristy. But don't let that discourage you, because the place is worth a visit if you're nearby. The scenery, mainly the mountains across the bay, is spectacular. There are a variety of restaurants at medium and higher price points. Many many gift shops, art shops, etc. There's an RV park (parking lot style) near the north end, and high end hotel/condos at the south end. The Spit is the starting point for various types of fishing trips, airplane "flightseeing" tours, and a boat trip across the bay to the town of Seldovia, which hasn't been ruined yet. The Spit is a stopping point for large cruise ships so you'll want to avoid it if you can on the days when those come in. Once you get to the Spit, find the free gravel parking lot, and walk up and down the sidewalks and boardwalks that provide access to the stores and restaurants and boat docks. We ate in two different restaurants and enjoyed them both, and took a cruise over to Seldovia, which was great. Afterward, we were lucky enough to see a display of the halibut that had just been caught in a fishing derby - big fish! We stopped at the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon (AKA the Fishing Hole) and watched people fish for salmon and watched seals steal those salmon. We also bought some beautiful wildlife art on the Spit. I would recommend going to the Spit with some particular activity in mind though, otherwise it's mostly a scenic ploace with stores and restaurants.

Great Place

By Mandy M |

If you're visiting Homer you have to come to the spit. It's got great restaurants, bars, shops, and a lot of the tours are based here. Great place to walk around and have some local fair and support a lot of seasonal businesses.

A very special place

By Emery Lee D |

A one-off location with a amazing views. We stayed at Lands End, which was a great location. Dont go cheap. Get a water-side room which opens up on the beach/water side. Birds, fish, sunrise, etc. Very nice. Walk the Marina and look at the boats, etc. Some unusual stuff. Friendly people and a number of food and beverage options. Worthy of two nights if you are restless. More if you plan to use it as base for some of the many local fishing adventure options. Enjoy. Cheers

Beautiful but very crowded

By Angie H |

The Spit is Homer offers amazing views in all directions. This is the place to go to make charter arrangements or enjoy being around other tourists. At times, you will find long lines for average food. There is much better food off the Spit in Homer. We did find one gem of a restaurant, Homer Spit Oyster House. There is a fishing pond you can fish in or just watch. Bike rental makes getting around easy and the shops are very nice.

Experience in Homer

By nursern98 |

The view of mountains and bay. The wildlife can be seem along the shores and sky. People enjoy walking on the beach

Trip on the Ferry back to Kodiak

By Robert T |

I love the Spit. Lots of shops and restaurants. Fishing for me has always been my favorite so being around all the boats and ocean is the best. When I travel to the mainland I go through Homer and enjoy the place and the people very much.

Long narrow stretch in the bay....

By RockiesResident |

Enjoyed seeing this spit and the surrounding scenery. The restaurants were good. And the activity offices are abundant here, whether for bear viewing trips or fishing.

Eagles fly in Homer

By Jana D |

Spent a couple of days in Homer Spit. This place is beautiful. Kayaking is a must. We were out with all kinds of sea life and the eagles were plentiful.

Homer Spit is special in many ways.

By WildFlowerMe |

If you're going to be in Homer, AK, (and why wouldn't you go??) you'll be in for a treat. Great restaurants with seafood right off the docks. We went on a fishing trip and took our fresh halibut to a restaurant who prepared it on the spot for a wonderful dinner after a wonderful day on the water. There are also great gift shops to get your souvenirs to take home or gift to someone special.

Homer is a little over 4 and a half hours drive from Anchorage with some of the best mountain /water views to be had in Alaska. Go!

Amazing place

By Chris B |

What an awesome place had dinner at Patties Fish Market which was excellent , would recommend visiting if you are in Alaska

Beautiful area!

By Sleonard |

Homer spit was a cool area. We did halibut fishing, a bear watching excursion, water taxi ride, hiked, shopped and ate in this area. Visiting the salty dog saloon is also a must while here. Homer is a quaint place, a lot of the places were closed due to Covid, but we still really enjoyed our time here.

Geographical landmark of Homer Alaska

By ccksmra |

Driving the thin, 4.5 mile sand spit into the Kachemak Bay is an experience. On the way out are many camping sites, then coms the commercial area, and at the end Lands End Resort. The offerings in the commercial area includes many restaurants, stores, tour operators, and the famous bar Salty Dawg.

Worth a detour visit!

By An L |

We were in Denali National Park and conversed with a lovely Canadian couple who described how beautiful was Homer and Valdez. We hadn't planned for Homer, but noted this was close to Seward so we took a detour here (instead of staying an extra day in Anchorage) and it was totally worth it! What a charming place, a pretty jutt into the Kachemak Bay. Highly recommend as one of the must sees in Alaska.

Homer is Beautiful

By western u |

Homer is a beautiful setting. The spit has restaurants, tourist shops, charter and tourist shops, boat harbors, businesses and a hotel. There are paved paths for walking. There is a trail across the east side of the spit.

The End of the Road

By Jimmy and Tammy |

I lived in Homer for five years. The Spit is where all the action is. You can view a glacier across the bay. See beluga whales, otters, puffins, seals, and tons of eagles. The "beach" is rocky...like river rocks, and even in the Summer you may want to bring a light jacket or hoodie. I've never had a bad meal from anyplace on the spit, so I recommend you try them all out. But my favorite place is Land's End. One side of the spit is oceanside, the other is bayside where you can charter a boat and fish for giant halibut. You can walk the docks and check out all the boats, you can shop little touristy places or have lunch/dinner with a jaw dropping view. You can fish at the "fishing hole" on the bayside or walk the beach on the oceanside. There is no reason to go to Homer if you don't go to the spit.

Rainy visit

By Debby B |

So much to do...so much to see. We walked along down by the boats one way and back by way of the restaurants and shops. Just taking it all in. We took it in faster on the return trip as the rain was starting to come down harder. We camped beachfront near the spit and loved our rainy visit!

Fun at the Spit

By debwelsch5 |

We stayed in the Spit. Would recommend staying there. Makes it quick and easy to get to most activities plus it is just a fun place to be! Views in every direction.

A Must Do!

By EPTXGAL53 |

We took a driving tour of the Kenai Pennisula and were looking forward to visiting the Homer Spit. Needless to say - part of the fault is ours as I was told by some of the locals that a lot on The Spit shuts down after Labor Day. We found 1/2 of the businesses open and others closed for the season. Also, if you do go in the off season, do not go to early in the morning because you will not find much, if anything open. It is a quaint boardwalk to give you opportunity to some beautiful scenery, walk the beach, enjoy a walk. I am handicapped and was able to use a can but did had some trouble getting to some and for safety reason chose not to visit others. Would I go again, yes, in a heart beat. However, I will make sure it is in season. We will probably stay at the Lands End this time. We were hesitant because of the storage tanks but the hotel seems nice with some great views to wake up to in the morning.

Not worth the drive unless you made reservations before arriving.

By Tourdirector14 |

After visiting Homer 7 times, I was very disappointed. It seems tourism has ruined much of it. Restaurants didn't want to serve us because there were 27 of us, they were too busy since it was high season. If we had not called ahead and just gone as 2 or 4 people, they would have had no problem. But I wanted to be courteous and let them know. The previous times I let them know and they were appreciative. This is not one restaurant, but most. It seems many have new younger managers who care little for customer service.
The whole spit area no longer has the small town feel but just a very touristy feel.
Not worth the drive anymore.
The exception is the Twisted Goat restaurant. Great food, warm friendly service and reasonable prices.

Loved

By janesW701AI |

Absolutely loved the trip to the homer spit. It was our 3rd visit and hope to return again. I highly recommend the area

Cool area

By Dale H |

This is a very touristy area, Gift shops and restaurants, there's some really cool stuff in the shop's. a must is a visit to the mariner's memorial. Sad but cool.

Magical spot

By mylesdolphin |

The Homer Spit is one of the most magical, special attractions I've seen in my life. It's just a remarkably peaceful place that always manages to make me happy. Just drive down and enjoy the view, take a walk and pop your head in the shops. Take a stroll on the beach, watch the eagles fly by. Take in the mountains and sea air. It's one of my favourite spots on Earth.

Unique and artsy

By Mark S |

Great place to chill but the views are the best, even though some people don’t like it being commercialized it’s Homer’s top seller. We liked it.

Busy place

By Steve R |

There were a lot of restaurants, we didn't try any so I can't comment on the food, but we visited most of the shops and found them to be the usual touristy junk shops that are a waste of money

Views from spit are amazing.

By Ginny R |

If you find yourself anywhere near Homer - don't miss the views from the spit! Enjoy fresh fish at Captain Patty's - shopping is good as well.

FUN time on the Spit!

By Nancy B J |

It was a shopping day so we visited lots of art and craft stores. Yes, the shops are right on the beach and bay, but up on stilts. Friendly shop staff. Busy restaurants with ... fish, really? on their menus.

Bay view.

By KarDal |

Restaurants and several shops to check out. There are several fishing charters and sightseeing excursions that can be booked here. Nice view of harbor and boats. Bald eagles can be seen along the beach. Nice place to take a walk on beach.

Great Water Taxi Ride

By Vacation520319 |

Rode water taxi over to Kachemak State Park- Captain was great and provided us with a great nature tour on the way over- pointed out everything from otters to the various sea birds

Touristy, but I must see if you’re on the Kenai Peninsula

By Mark H |

A must visit if you’re staying on the Kenai peninsula. Is 4 1/2 mile narrow strip of land juts into Kachemak Bay and offers stunning views.

You’ll never see somebody boat trailers parked In one place in your entire life. This speaks to the heart of what Homer spit is about, fishing. Blended in with the fisherman, both recreational and commercial, are hordes of tourists who swarm the shops and restaurants.

It’s definitely worthy of an afternoon. If you have time I would book a place to stay across the bay in Halibut Cove. The place is magical.

The End of the Road

By Dianne O |

Simply beautiful/ Saw two bald eagles. It was cold and windy but it didn't stop us from enjoying the beach.

A must do when in Homer

By BKSNtravel |

Fun place with lots of shops. Walk along the beach and see the incredible views. Much was closed due to Covid. Many of the restaurants were not open for dinner. Those that were had long wait times and grumpy hostesses.

Pretty sights but mostly lots of parking and run down shops and tour offices

By Lawrence H |

We spent a short time there as we did not care for it much. The natural sights are great but the actual Spit is lots of parking and a lot of run down buildings which mostly house tour offices advertising fishing charters and such. The free and plentiful parking is nice.

Fabulous views!

By E3545TWnancyw |

Great experience strolling through shops and walking along the beach. Good idea to visit both during low tide and again at high tide. Fantastic!

Good for a walk & for food

By Alice W |

Essentially this is a road with eateries, a few bars & shops and lots of fishing stuff. Good for an early dinner or in the daytime

A real disappointment

By KStoAZ |

Extremely crowded & parking is difficult to find. The Spit is crammed with campers, trinket tourist shops, a few restaurants & bars. Unless you plan on going on a fishing charter, don’t bother.

Fishing expedition

By Bruce M |

Everything was great! People were friendly and helpful. This is a beautiful little town. ..definitely a place to see.

Must do

By TXLauraLea |

Great shops, lots of things to do; can find every activity from fishing to wind surfing, lots of photo ops! Beautiful view!

Tourist sightseeing locale

By Mike P |

Anchored by the Land's End hotel, the spit has numerous restaurants, souvenir shops and fishing or sightseeing charters. You need to watch for it but there is free parking , otherwise, it is $10 a day.

Tourist Row

By Guide157430 |

They have your usual tourist things going....but watch for the fishing trips coming in and they hang their prizes for all to see....we learned later that those great big Halibuts are not the best to eat....but they sure are impressive in size!

Were there in September and nothing special

By John W |

We were told that we had to visit Homer while in AK, so we made the long drive down to it. Although the Spit (peninsula) portion of Homer definitely had an array of unique tourist places to eat and shop, we thought it was rather boring. It could have been the time of year.

Fun little piece of dirt in the ocean

By CM Murray |

Lots of great shops, good little coffee place tucked in there, the Salty Dog of course and tons of fishing charters

nice for tourists

By mmem7 |

a little too touristy but plenty of nice wares to view and take home. Good restaurants as well. Nice views

Don't be late!

By Wes T |

COVID has caused a number of eating establishments to close (shortage of workers). Also restaurants may run out of some menu items (shortage of supplies). Dine early!

Homer's Evolving Heartbeat

By PookyCake |

Often described as Homer’s heartbeat, the Homer Spit is a lovely 4.5 mile long terminal moraine, left behind by the receding glacier that carved out picturesque Kachemak Bay some 15,000 years ago. Indeed, I feel that the metaphor of “heartbeat” is apt for describing this place because it is, in many ways, where the town of Homer was born. Initially used by the Natives as a useful and practical fishing ground, the site eventually became the staging area for coal mined from bluffs on the mainland. Then, long after coal mining went the way of the dodo, the Spit became home to what were lovingly referred to as “Spit Rats” (hippies) in the 1960s and early 1970s, thus paving the way for the contemporary commercialization of Homer Spit in the current day.

In the contemporary period, locals often refer to the Homer Spit as “touristy” and they’re not wrong in their assessments. After all, the Spit currently houses a plethora of souvenir shops, a number of restaurants, accommodations (both hotel and RV), the Homer marina, fishing charters and tour boat operators. In short, the Homer Spit clearly and openly caters to the transient tourist, giving them a taste of that old-world Alaska charm. Of course, I think it would be a complete falsity to say visiting any “touristy” area is not worth one’s time because, let’s face it, they certainly are worthy; I mean, they’re popular for a reason! And to avoid visiting Homer Spit is to avoid patronizing a key element of Homer as a town.

Thus, thinking of Homer Spit within the context of a vital heartbeat, there is much to do and see on this lovely spit, jutting out into Kachemak Bay. First, there are a number of souvenir shops, all of which emphasize the local and highlight the rugged beauty of Alaska. Whether you’re looking for contemporary art pieces, or traditional Inuit carvings, the various shops on Homer Spit have got you covered. Sea Lion Art, for example, hosts a fine and fair mix of traditional Inuit pieces and contemporary prints. Inua, on the other hand, covers a full range of “Native arts” from across Alaska, though many of these pieces – which include walrus tusk and the like – well exceeded my budget! On the other end of the spectrum, the Homer General Store features many a little trinket sure to please the budget-minded. Second, the spit caters to the outdoor enthusiast. There are numerous fishing and pleasure charter companies (O’fish’ial Charters, to name one) ready and willing to take you out into the Bay to try your hand at world-class salmon and halibut fishing; or, if heading out to sea isn’t your thing, there’s also the man-made Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon, which is stocked with salmon for your fishing pleasure. Third, there are restaurants . . . lots of restaurants. Again, where you go depends wholly upon what you’re willing to spend. There are budget-friendly eateries (Happy Face) and fine dining (Chart Room), all to be had on Homer Spit. Regardless of where you choose to dine, the food should be good. Most is all caught locally – and sustainably.

At 4.5 miles long, it’s easy to spend a good couple of days exploring the Homer Spit and all it has to offer. Whether it’s fishing, kayaking, beachcombing, or just walking the length of the spit, you’ll inevitably find something to do. I know, for myself, just walking Homer Spit was satisfying as it allowed me to take in the natural beauty of the area while concomitantly buying small gift items to take home. There was just something wonderfully relaxing about walking that flat beautiful stretch of land at the edge of the sea, Homer’s heartbeat going strong.

Visit the Spit!

By shadow33ak |

The 'Spit' allows you to drive right out into Kachemak Bay where the views of the Bay and surrounding mountains are magnificent! You can camp, walk along the beach, eat at several restaurants, and shop at unique local stores along boardwalk sections. The Spit also features boat docking, many Alaska adventure shops (for fishing, bear viewing, flight tours, etc.), and ferry service to Seldovia and Kodiak.

Interesting

By Tim R |

The spit is an interesting place with shops for souvenirs, charters, and restaurants. I mainly dealt with the charters and the fish freezing/packaging store. Prices in the shops and restaurants are high.

Shops, Bars, & Restaurants

By ackjac |

Captain Patties for fish was great. Salty Dawg Saloon is a trip in itself. More fishing boats that you can count!

Beautiful Area.

By SouthDakotaGrandma |

Such an awesome place, great little shops, gulls, and playful otters. We parked our rental car and walked the board walk more than once.

Gorgeous views!

By Leylinedragon |

When you are in Homer and you have young kids, the best thing to do is go explore! With the threat of corona, sometimes the kids are sick of being outside. That was not the case at the Homer Spit and we skipped rocks, played in the water, watched boats go by, and enjoyed family time. So many high quality shops along the spit to enjoy and even gelato!

Halibut Heaven

By JoAnn A |

The sign at the entrance of town says it all: HALIBUT FISHING CAPITAL OF THE WORLD! We caught our limit on the SILVER Fox fishing charter with captain Rick. Homer has a continual breeze coming off the water, so we had zero mosquitos.

Nice area but not too much to do or see

By Dan F |

Have been on the Kenai Peninsula for a week and stopped in homer. Just a few things to do on the spit. Same shops as everywhere. Fish and chips just average.

Every day a perfect day on the Spit

By Carolyn J |

There is something so beautiful about being at land's end. The water, the glaciers, the birds. I always feel that if I looked long and hard enough, I could see Japan! It is a great place to warm your soul.

Must see!

By Shelly G |

We camped, shopped, kayaked and ate on the spit. Lots to do and see. Beautiful scenery and we got to see a lot of otters!

Fantastic

By Trusstytraveller |

The homer spit area is amazing. You can take in the views, simply wander along the spit area, and shop until your hearts content. Take your time and take in the atmosphere.

2 forehand in search of vulture

By ichyya |

There are vultures everywhere.
Look for heights such as ship masts on utility poles
They're usually high, but sometimes low.
I visited in March, so few restaurants were open

All closed up during winter

By Lathkill |

Great place to get a view & photos of the mountains across the bay. The seamans memorial was very thought provoking of how dangerous these waters can be.

Hauntingly beautiful

By Pat B |

I keep reliving our visits to the spit. It really seems like the end of the world and is surrounded by magnificent, peaceful and serene scenery. One cannot ever say this is a mundane place or view.

Beautiful Harbor

By ourglobewanderers |

Our Holland America cruise ship docked here for the day on June 11, 2019. We got off the ship and immediately saw tons of seagulls and Kittiwakes nesting all over the dock area. We had planned to find a boat ride on our own from either Bay Excursions or Mako. They are both basically water taxi companies that offer some kind of boat tours, or a ride-along tour, where you pay about $50 per person to ride along on the boat as it takes locals to their destinations. We didn’t want to reserve anything in advance, because we wanted to be sure the weather would cooperate. However, we were so enchanted by the Spit and its harbor, that we changed our minds and decided to hang out on the Spit. There was a free shuttle bus (old school bus) from the ship to the Salty Dog Saloon, so we took that. Some people had a bit of a challenge fitting into seats designed for school children! Once off the bus we decided to walk a bit further out to the Seafarer’s Memorial, and then walk 1.5 mile or so back to the ship. The memorial is a beautiful tribute with its haunting poem. There were many shops and restaurants, but the best part was looking at the harbor with all the different fishing boats.

Great place to visit

By Kathy P |

We had a wonderful day wandering around the spit. Remember not all who wander are lost. The Time Bandit was in port. Lots of fishing vessels , shopping and amazing food of course. Spend some time along the shore watching the otters play.

Bustling with activity

By Kara L |

This is a great location to spend a day. A lot of little shops to look at things, places to eat, and beach to play on. If it’s cool, the ocean will make it cooler, so dress in layers!

The fresh seafood is amazing & many places to take fishing expeditions and other ocean tours.

The views were impacted by a local fire 🔥 during my visit, but normally, you can see more majesty all around!!

Pretty scenery

By OlsenkdNY |

Cool place to check out shops or book a tour/water taxi. Also found some great restaurants on the strip.

Beautiful!

By BreAnna M |

An absolutely beautiful place to visit! Our family enjoyed walking the beach, halibut fishing, and looking at all of the fun shops! Great place!

Fun place to walk around

By Susanne T |

We had some time left before we had to be back on our cruise ship and enjoyed walking around Homer Spit a lot. There are lots of fun stores to explore and the beach is very nice to walk along. The walk back to the ship is beautiful, overlooking the harbor and it's boats and ships.

Awesome trip to Homer Spit

By Travelogue2018 |

Stayed at the Land's End Resort. Great view of the Kachemak bay from the room. Thoroughly enjoyed nearby attractions including a trip to Katmai for brown bear watching and another to Grewingk glacier.

Beautiful Views!

By Andrea B |

Lots of cute little shops, many restaurants, camp sites and several charter shops to book fishing trips and bear viewing trips. Parking can be hard to find though. If you arrive early you can find a spot. It's a great place to spend the day! The views of the glaciers across the bay are amazing!

Avoid the Holidays

By Alan L |

We made the mistake of coming here over a holiday weekend and was chaos - RV City. It was a shame because given a more leisurely visit we would have enjoyed it more

Drove from Anchorage to the Spit

By Breadt |

It’s definitely worth the drive seeing it! The view on all sides is beautiful and there’s shops and restaurants with good food! Only negative I had was in a shop where my husband bought me a Christmas ornament that was handmade with whale shavings and cast into polymer with fur on the coat. My husband paid the lady, she took the money and never said Thank you! Nothing, I guess we didn’t spend enough. Down South we use manners! The other shops people were friendly.

We love Homer 🦅

By Jutta Z |

We love, love Homer. Staying on the Spit with our RV is always a highlight. Walking along the shores, relaxing in the beautiful nature, enjoying fresh fish, communicating with friendly people... what a blessing. You can book fish charters, bear watching, helicopter flights.... my favorite is visiting all the small art shops, so special.

Boardwalk with incredible views

By Archie |

We enjoyed walking around the spit. Beaches, gift shops and restaurants. There is a playground just under the boardwalk. We enjoyed dinner at a restaurant, icecream, crepes, and we saw some incredible art work at the gift shop. Definitely souvenirs here to take home. A must visit in the area

great place for RV

Great place to visit

By Shawn-DJ McBrid... M |

The views are outstanding here and there's so much to do. Always worth the drive to come here for a visit.

End of the road, but lots to see

By Kate C |

The spit is rather touristy but none the less: What fun to walk the piers and to look at the many hundreds of boats, stop at a restaurant and eat fresh fish, walk the beach, feel the ocean breeze, watch more boats,, watch the fishermen bringing in halibut or salmon, admire art in the local shops, catch a water taxi for a hike across the bay or just people watch.

Homer Spit

By Becky |

No place on earth like it! Just go and enjoy the local charm, beautiful views, water, wildlife, etc. Just go.

Food, art and nature

By Raihan K |

This place has very good restaurants, art studios, sovenior shops. Must spend time and specially buy the potteries from artist shop.

Home to all the rides, water taxis and adventures you can imagine.

We ate halibut, sockeye salmon and wonderful deserts. Had the rainbow tour, bought potters, did the creatures of the dock with Jonas.

Homer spit is teaming with fun, entertainment and nice people.

Views of bay and Glaciers

By esc2bend |

Nice attraction, we didn't shop but we did eat at 3 different restaurants. The views are beautiful. We took our 360 camera and video the spit. It was a little windy to walk on the beach each time we went so decided to do other sight seeing.

Lots to see and do

By Debra H |

There are many places to shop and eat along the spit! So many places to eat and shop. Many inferential types of food to choose from - and different type of shops to browse.

Lots of good food many touristy shops

By natasha m |

We were in Homer for a few days this summer and frequented the Spit numerous times. It’s an interesting walk lots of quaint shops catering to tourists, also art studios and a variety of places to eat! One can watch people fishing at the fishing lagoon as the tide brings in the salmon. One can charter a fishing boat from the many charters available on the spit. We enjoyed walking on the beach and exploring the tide pools at low tide.

Re-assess, renew and restore the beauty and charm of the spit!!! And Better regulate the fishing!!!

By Wayne S. |

Homer and the Homer Spit have been decimated by poor planning and Greed!!!
In redesigning the spit, the planners ruined the natural beauty that had been there for generations!

Now, the Homer Spit is simply a parking lot for hundreds of campers, many of whom have little respect for the natural beauty and courtesy that Homer once had.
Homer needs to RESTORE the beauty and CULTURE of the Spit as it was in the last century and the early part of this century.

First reduce the number of trailer, motor home and tent camping sites on the spit and return it to as it was back at the turn of century.

If you were in Homer in early 2000s, you’ll remember how friendly, beautiful Homer was, and how unobstructed were your views of the ocean and mountains…it was spectacular!

There were no high rise condos at the end of the spit that should have been built further inland and NOT at the end of the spit !!!
Gone are a great number of fishing charter shacks and gift shops that were replaced by row after row of campers and motor homes.
And gone are the Bald eagles that used to dine on the fish cleaning waste on the Spit shore…you could actually get relatively close to those majestic birds and watch them eat.

The argument was that the charters overfished the waters, but we saw little difference in the number of charter boats going out while we there in June of 2022.

And the shore fishing only ads to the number of people and campers that not only obstruct your view of Alaska’s beauty, but reduce the number of places you can dine and shop while enjoying the view.

In my opinion, those who control the Homer Spit have totally ruined it.
In my estimation, the problem of overfishing the waters surrounding Homer could have been better controlled by simply reducing the number of charter cruises and not by replacing the charter shacks with hundreds of camper and motor home sites that ruin the natural beauty of the Spit as it was in the days of Hobo Jim!

And the high rise condos should never have been built at the end of the Spit! They should be raised and move further inland north of downtown Homer which would provided better views Bo the mountains and the Spit itself.
Apparently the City fathers placed greed over the retention of the the natural beauty of Alaska.
If I wanted to see hundreds of campers and motor homes stacked door to door with generators running, I could have stayed in the lower 48!!!
Why did you ruin one of Alaska’s gems???!!!.

Fishing and Shopping in Homer

By Sally R |

In Homer, the spit is where it's at. $15 taxi ride from anywhere in town. Cheaper than renting a car. I used a charter, that leaves from the spit-caught my limit! Harders Charters are the best! Patties has the best seafood on the spit! Don't miss the Playhouse-on the spit. Local actors, but very well done. You can camp on the spit, and Lands End has rentals at the end of the spit. We stayed at a VRBO in town. 2 bedroom house for $100 each per night. Nicks taxi had the cleanest cabs, for the same price as the other company. 24 hr service, always prompt, even at 6:15 am.

Super cool, but real world

By VNORVI |

Nice bike ride, and later we drove down, cool spot. Several nice shops and touristy restaurants. Still has a real life feel though - fishing and shipping. Lots of water taxi services to the state parks etc, where there are gorgeous hikes.

Touristy but fun!

By jlynn102 |

We stayed on the Homer Spit during our three nights in Homer and enjoyed it thoroughly. We enjoyed walking the beach, checking out all the little shops and galleries, and wildlife watching. We barely went into the actual town of Homer, and would highly recommend for anyone planning a trip to the Kenai Peninsula!

Lovely place

By BenjyBear |

Lovely little place, great beach with views across the bay and mountains beyond. Lotsl of eclectic little shops and restaurants. Great place to spend a few days. Lots of day trips run from here either on the water, hiking, or flightseeing trips. Great place to base yourself.

It was OK

By Mike1sMike |

There was nothing really memorable about the place. The drive from Anchorage was pretty (and long) but the destination of Homer Spit was a let-down. The pizza at Fat Olives was pretty good but the end of the road seemed like cheap-crap tourism shops filled with RV's and little culture other than the fishing community

Amazing!!!

By Pam T |

I feel in love with this little town!!! Water on both sides & some amazing restaurants. Folks make you feel your part of their small town. Great views of the mountains & boats.

Just a visit

By Mary Beth C |

The Homer spit offers beautiful water on both sides. There are multiple restaurants souvenir shops and drinking establishments. We went as a vacation not to fish, however I am sure that the fishing there is fantastic. I would recommend anyone in Alaska or visiting Alaska to go and visit the spit

Beautiful view, lots of places to eat and stay.

By PietroBordino |

A gorgeous place. There are a great number of lodging, food, and activity opportunities. Definitely worth at least a couple of nights and a full day.

Just a long jetty, nothing special

By wil r |

This is not special! This is essentially just a very long jetty. Tourist shops where cruise ships dock. This. is an attraction only if you are stuck in Homer already.

Must See

By Satori5 |

If you're going to Alaska, you must stop in Homer and visit the Homer Spit. Its beautiful right along the ocean, you can collect an abundance of seashells and the little shops, ice cream places and restaurants are some of the best I've ever been too. Its a very relaxing place to be and i hope you fall in love with it as much as I have! I've been to Alaska 3 times and it gets more beautiful every time!

One of a kind

By cat momma |

Long sandbar type community that juts well out into Kachemac Bay, gives you lots of views, interesting beach to explore, and many small shops and little restaurants.

Great time in Homer Alaska

By Road402094 |

The town of Homer and Homer spit is fun and funky. In late August it wasn't crowded. Our campground, Ocean Shores RV Park had a great view of the bay along with the mountains and the glaciers across the water.
The Spit was great fun, very eclectic with fishing boats, casual boats, people cleaning their catch, the local cannery, and fun small shops lining the street. Monday was not the best day for lunch places as Captain Patti's Fish.House was the only place open, and it was excellent.
I'm so glad we made the effort to drive down to Homer. Lots of activities to choose from.

Shopping, dining, dive bars! What more could you ask for. The Homer Spit has it all. You can also watch the fishing boats come a go down in the Harbor and walk on the shore. If you come to Homer, visit the Spit. Great Gelato too!!

2 Days Spent!

Very simple with overwhelming views! All the little shops have so much hand crafted work thats amazingly done! The Salty Dog is really neat! Everything is on the pricy side, though. But so is all of Alaska lol

time spent in Homer

By Dale S |

The Homer Spit is a long sliver of land lined with many shops, restaurants and the marina. There seems to be plenty of parking, we got there early each day for fishing trips.

Lots of activities

By skigma |

Definitely take the bald mountain air flight with Gary to Katmai national Park and Brooks falls for the bear viewing it is the float plane trip not to be missed. Forget the halibut fishing trip on Foxfire. Captain was awful . People were injured by items that were not secured and boat had too many people on it. Halibut Cove trip is ok but not too much to see there. You are expected to buy your dinner which is way too expensive . They make a big deal about locally sourced food but the seafood “chowder “ had minced clams a few pieces of potato and some sliced carrots floating in some watery broth-yuk-i would not recommend that trip

Spit has lost its charm.

By Michael H |

Had been to the Spit in 2010. Was an artist colony then. Not now. Seems now to be a large RV lot with hard-to-find parking places and fishing boats galore. A few nice shops and many over-priced restaurants. Won’t go back.

The vibe of the town

By shamwowhr |

A must area to go hang out. Good food, points of interest. We were down in the evening so we got to see all the folks fish they caught during the day. We also saw some otters playing in the dock area. Enjoy!

Fun times on the Homer Spit.

By RayAMeaux |

Several interesting things to do on the Spit. The seafarers memorial, the eagles on the cell tower, bars, restaurants, and fish processing stations are all great things to do and see. We had a wonderful time at these places and watching the waves on the beach.

Beautiful Place

By Dottie B |

We enjoyed our visit to Homer Spit very much. After lunch at the Lands End Restaurant, We walked along the board walk and back along the beach.

Lots to do with the family

By Brock G |

The Homer Spit is fascinating. Lots of shops, restaurants, outfitters, and other activities. Come there and compare notes with different vendors for bear tours, fishing, water taxis, and hiking guides. Throw rocks on the beach or simply take a hike. I would go there early in your visit to Homer as you make plans on how to spend your time.

Unique

By Robert R |

Homer is worth a visit if traveling to Alaska. The halibut fishing is great and the spit is a unique land formation and business area to visit.

Go in winter

By Miriam |

The spit is pretty sleepy in the winter. Not much is open, except for a few fishing shops and the Land's End Hotel. All that is left is the extreme beauty of the snow-capped mountains across Kachemak Bay, the awesome wild and cold beaches, sea otters floating in the bay, and bald eagles everywhere. Personally, I think it's better than in the summer.

We stayed at the end of the Spit

By Tucker50 |

We stayed at the end of the Spit at Land's End and loved our views of Kachemak Bay and surrounding mountains. We also loved walking on the beach. The was the launching place for fishing, kayaking, and other tours. It had restaurants and gift stores.

Must see!

By Kimberly K |

The Homer Spit is a must if you come to the Kenai Peninsula. Terrific little shops line the boardwalk, along with little nooks to eat. It's very touristy, but it's just beautiful. Fish, walk along the boat harbor, see wildlife, frolic in the sand or camp out. We spent the better part of the day on the Spit and went back for more. Traffic and parking can be a bit difficult. Watch the parking signs as parking enforcement is out and about. Bring good walking shoes.

Very Enjoyable

By Daniel J |

We really liked our visit. We stayed two nights. There are an abundance of things to do. My wife went horseback riding and I went kayaking.

Very nice

By tiap |

The Spit has plenty of shops and very interesting spots for eating and great views at the beach. My advice drive all the way to the end and see how beautiful it really is.

Shop and Play in Paradise

By MimiB96 |

The Spit has amazing views of the mountains and bay! We could have stayed here forever. Walking along the Spit with the wind blowing to cool us after a warm day was perfect! There are many cool stores to purchase Alaska or Homer merchandise. Locally made products included. We booked a wildlife boat tour while visiting the Spit. Several restaurants. A tavern with dollar bills and foreign bills attached to the walls, ceiling, wherever anyone could attach them. You can see what the fishing charters hauled in. One halibut we saw weighed over 200 pounds! Someone will be eating halibut for a very long time. Cannot miss this cool attraction in Homer!

Good Place

By mzyxcba |

This is a fun town with lots to do. Drive the back roads and you will see lots of wild life. Fishing is the main attraction. Going out in the bay can be a great experience.

Cool place

By James L |

Very long drive from Anchorage but worth it, it touristy but a great place to catch a charter and go catch a huge variety of fish!

A must see

By Shiloh W |

There is no other place on earth like Homer. The Spit gives you the beach vibe, while the mountains in the background are breathtaking.

homer Spit

By nukedog |

The Spit is where all the charter and tour companies are based. Also, some good seafood restaurants and some souvenir stores.

Beautiful place on a clear day, lots of neat shops, restaurants, and fun things to do.

By heimer2015 |

I've been coming to Homer from Anchorage for over 40 years. It's still a beautiful place, but the spit has really gotten overbuilt with RV parks, touristy shops and expensive lodging everywhere. If you've never been there you need to see this unique location and it's incredibly pretty on a nice day. Beautiful mountains and glaciers across Kachemak Bay! Fishing charters available (pricey, but if you catch a decent halibut you've paid for the trip!), kayak rentals, or take a water taxi to the tiny towns of Halibut Cove or Seldovia across the bay.

A Magical Hamlet

By Magictravelnow |

I totally lost all space and time when I visited as you are in the ost magificent pace on earth surrounded by glaciers, Katemack Bay, otters floating by, fishing vessels, working Ferry, water taxi's, sea planes, tranquility, spouts from whales, the finest sunsets I felt at peace and truly did not want to leave.
You are surrounded by magesty. If people would come to visit it will change your life for the better. Get out and see this place just a 45 minute flight fom Anchorage you are in a diferent world where I was in my own world and never looked at a calendar or phone just pure beauty.

Lands End. Literally.

By Geoffrey R |

Great places to eat. Wonderful shops to visit and nowhere to go. This is a tiny sliver of populated land with fishing boats and charters. We had a great time just wandering around.

The Homer Spit is such a unique landform, jutting out so far into the Bay. It's worth a visit just for that experience alone. (You can get a perspective by going up into the hills of Homer to a view point and see the whole Spit from above.) It really is a gorgeous place! There are campgrounds and the number of vessels in the harbor there is really impressive. Just a cool fishing village vibe at its core. And, it's the "jumping off place" for water taxis and charters to a variety of places if you have the time and money and physical capabilities to enjoy those sorts of things.

But I have to say that, otherwise, Homer Spit in July was like the Alaskan version of any extremely touristy place you've ever been, but with gorgeous views of mountains. If you're just going to see it and don't plan to do those other things, I wouldn't plan to spend more than a couple of hours there honestly. Alaska has too much to offer to spend much time on the Spit. My husband and I spent four nights of our vacation, and I sure wouldn't do that again! Everything was a hassle: long waits and lines for dinner or anything else, parking difficult to find at times, people everywhere. If that's your thing, you'll love the Spit.

Not sure of the attraction

By patellaOwensboro |

I am not sure how I can rate the Homer Soit as we did t even get out of the car. Just driving down the spit we didn’t see a reason to investigate further.

If in Homer, it is a must visit, otherwise no need to visit.

By M B |

Beautiful day that we visited, in town for a flight to Katmai. Can cover in a couple of hours. A few interesting shops and places to grab a bite to eat. We ate at Finn's Pizza, and grabbed a drink at the salty dog saloon.

Love The Spit

By L8453GOmartinb |

Beautiful views, cute shops and restaurants. Lots of charters to local points of interest. Very walkable with plenty of taxis service. There’s also a trolley. It’s $15 per day that can take you up and down the Spit and into the town of Homer.

Leisurely afternoon

By jlbryan |

The spit is very much a tourist area. Lots of great little shops with tourist items to purchase. There are also restaurants. The marina is here as well. So, it is busy. There is some free parking as well as a pay lot ($5.00 for the day). It is a great place to watch the water and the tides.

Definitely worth an afternoon or a day if you are so inclined.

Seven kilometres of headland

By LaVa Touristik |

From the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center (Islands & Ocean) to the Land's End sign, it's only about 6 miles - in between, there's the Seafarer's Memorial, Salty Dawg Saloon Lighthouse, and along Homer Spit Rd. (Near Homer Marina) a lot of other shops, pubs and restaurants.

In good weather a little crowded, i.e. if necessary bring a little patience until you find a parking space.

Homer Spit

We rented an RV for 9 days and stayed at the Heritage RV Park on the Homer Spit. Best RV Park we stayed in. The Homer Spit was really cool.

Interesting and fun place

By Ferg42995 |

What a beautiful "spit" of land out into the bay! So many water activities are stationed here as well as plenty of restaurants and shops. Fun place to explore and great views the whole time!

Homer is a Great example of Poor City Planning

By Daniel W |

Throughout Alaska on this trip local told us that they wanted to Build A Wall around Homer. I can now see why. The town and Spit are prime examples of how a government City Planning Failure will look. The Spit is overrun with unsightly mess. The old town is dying from lack of business. The only good thing is the fishing fleet and compared to Seward that even need help.

Pedestrian and Bicycle paved Path

By Veronica Hunter |

I walked from Land's End Resort to Main Street, visiting the tourist areas. After drinking coffee, I walked back to Land's End ...13 miles...A good way to burn calories, breath fresh air and see the sights.

RV Hell or Fisher's Heaven

By DadandCab |

The spit is about 4.5 miles long. The start is just a two lane road and a walkway on one side. Once you get towards the end it becomes a gravel RV car park & a few overpriced cafes. If you want to fish in the season I'm sure you can't miss. People were dragging them out without any skill whatsoever. I felt sorry for the hapless fish, driven by primeval urges to return, only to be hooked by novice tourist from Texas.

A great evening checking out the town

By liv2ski |

We really only had one evening to try to see the Spit area. Everyone was friendly and courteous as we visited. There was more than what we were able to see in that one afternoon.

Wonderful trip

By rbrashears62 |

Our 1st time to Homer and loved the Spit.

Great food and shopping.

Nice just to walk around

RV parks and people camping on the beach.

Nice drive out to the end

By Perriknows |

We missed most of the tourist season so our trip to the Homer Spit was just a drive and a stop at the Seafarers Memorial. Most all of the restaurants and businesses were closed for the season the week before we were there.

The Seafarers Memorial was very poignant, with shells and rocks on the memorial with lost souls names, and remembrance sentiments on them.

Homer Spit

Lots of neat shops and great dining. Great views. Kinda pricey but well worth it! Definitely a place to visit.

One of my favorite Places

By Sandi H |

One of my very favorite trips ever. My son and Dog andi drove the camper van from Calgary alberta. Trip of a lifetime. Alaska it’s amazingly beautiful. Camped on the spit, small spots - just enough room to park but the experience was great. Also camped one Night in the provincial campground. Took Katmai air to Brooks falls!!!! OMG

So much to see here

By lulubelle99ca |

It is a great place to spend the day. Lots of options for fishing charter companies and bear sightseeing companies as well. Lots of eating options - mostly fresh seafood here. Gift shops are plentiful and they are all different. This is a refreshing change from all other ports where cruise ships stop in at.
You can camp on either side of the Spit and have an ocean view. Stunning!!!

Fun place to check out

By Tonya R |

Fun place- tons of restaurants, shops, recreation, adventures! Love the walk- you can drive all the way down too which is super nice! Eclectic mix of art, food, shops, and fun!!

Memorable Experience

By JDSoui |

Spent time on the beach at low tide and walking among the stores and restaurants including trying some appetizers from small food kiosks. There are a good amount of people and parking is limited given the quantity of workers and tourists.

This was worth spending part of a day walking around - especially at low tide and in the afternoons with views of the mountains.

o to the end

By Sibylla O |

Enjoy the restaurants especially Captain Patty's but also go to the end and enjoy the beautiful views and surrounding. There is a bar with the restaurant/hotel so if you want to stay a bit longer you can

You Can't Visit Homer Without Going to the Spit

By Pat-in-S-Fla |

Beautiful area and even without the little shops is worth driving down and walking around. Geographically, it's the equivalent of Key West in Florida. Water surrounds. Fun to watch the day's catch from halibut fishing boats, too.

Gotta check this out!

By Holly V |

cool area where there is a lot of activity for shopping and catching tours. Check out Home Slice pizza -- the philly steaks are huge and delicious as is the Thai pizza

Great for a day visit or weekend

By TutinsPony |

Lots to do on the Spit, great food, cafes, bars and restaurants.
Also the place to launch many activities; fishing, hiking (via water taxi), Kayaking etc.

One of the most beautiful places on earth

By Joyce S |

I live in Maine, so have seen beautiful coastal areas all my life. Homer, Alaska, is at the top of my list! Would return in a heartbeat, despite the long, long plane ride!

The Spit

By Ashlie |

Good location to walk around, shop, sightsee, and eat. Went back almost everyday for something. Fish and chips with a Blonde beer makes a great lunch with a view. Watched the boats, birds, and people. Very active area. Watch your speed 25mph. Couple Deadliest Catch boats were there.

Spent 3 days camping here

By DBDoc |

Traveling with an RV Tour group through Alaska and Canada.
This was our stop while in Homer. Nice small shops along the strip. Had to come to homer to meet 2 people that went to college near me in Lancaster County PA! One was a mate on the fishing charter boat Whistler that we chartered for halibut.

Worth seeing

By Escape60762143681 |

This is a cultural phenomenon. lots of shops and restaurants, and water taxi to everywhere. Everything is as expensive as you would expect.

Cross between an amusement park and a zoo

By deepwoods |

If you like crowds of people and little shops selling food, drinks, trinkets, and souvenirs, then this is the place for you. Too many people, not enough parking, along with harbor and ferry traffic make for a madhouse atmosphere. Couldn't wait to get as far from here as quickly as possible... However, if you need Alaska's number 1 export (Salty Dog Saloon hoodie), then you will need to make the sacrifice and come to this place.

Lots do to.... Windy and busy

By Steve S |

There is a lot to do here but the spit area is windy, busy, and dusty.... Mostly restaurants and dinner places, but the fish packing warehouses have some great deals... Fresh Alaskan Halibut for thtee nights!!!!

Historical and interesting to visit

By Elizabeth K |

Interesting spot to visit any of numerous eateries, bars, marinas (as well as having a major dock facility for large vessels), watch people fishing, a great view of Kachemak Bay.

Another must see if you make it to Homer.

By Mike C |

Harbor at the end is a very cool place to walk around. Saw many boats and fishermen cleaning their halibut, salmon and rock fish. Nice shops around for tourist stuff. Not too pricey. Just a real cool place to see and experience. No other place like it.

Sticker Shock

By Mike S |

Lots to do and so many nice shop on the spit road you could spend a day and your bankroll there. Eagles fly overhead and the ocean. Only problem is gas is $4.40 a gallon.

A few days in Homer

By Lamatthews |

We stayed in the Seafarers House just a couple miles from the Homer Spit, we traveled in daily walked all of the shops, my husband went fishing on Maverick Charters. We had a great time.

A very fun place to visit

By grayfoxx11907 |

I did not visit any of the shops, only drove down there to get to Mako's Water Taxi, which is outstanding, by the way. I was struck by the plethora of abandoned boats and vehicles, not only on the Spit, but throughout Homer. It seemed as if people just walked away and left their vehicles to decay and deteriorate.

Various restaurants, gift shops, restaurants, bars, hotels, marinas, etc on a long peninsula split.

By pbreslau |

We drove out three or four times and hiked a bit once. Wonderful seafood soup at a local eatery and provision shop. Water taxied across the fjord for an exciting day of kayaking.

Great place to visit!

By D J |

This was my second time to tour the Homer Spit. Definitely worth the trip because of the atmosphere the coastal town has to offer. Great shops, restaurants, friendly people. Plus, you can catch a bear-viewing trip out of Homer.

Fun local atmosphere

By Rebecca K |

The spit has a true sea town vibe complete with excellent seafood restaurants, local artists, and gift shops. We enjoyed walking along the harbor and looking at the many kinds of boats. Carmen's Gelato is worth a stop. It is premier. The views from the spit are breath-taking.

Fishing village vibes

By dragonstarjk |

We had fun walking along the spit, ducking in to shops and watching people come and go with their catch of the day. Half a day was long enough for us.

Beautiful and fun

By rmestes |

Beautiful area and fun to walk along the beach looking for shells. Cute shops and eateries along the route too. Convenient restrooms was a welcomed site!!

Worth visiting

By deanna g |

Mako's water taxi. See how folks who.live off the grid transport goods to homes across the bay. Lots of fun shops and restaurants, beachfront to walk along.

Burning Calories

By Veronica H |

Exiting the Land Ends Resort, I walked on the Spit road, then on the beach, the left side. Admiring the outdoor beauty, stopping to photograph here and there, relaxed my nerves.
I crossed over to the right side of the Spit to find a paved pedestrian/ bicycle path.
I followed the main road ( Route 1 ) continued walking to Main Street, stopped for coffee at the tall red cup, then crossed Sterling Hwy to visit Old Town, Bishop Beach, the garden trail and back to the Spit.... approximately 13 miles

So disappointed

By Denise D |

I can't express how disappointed I was in the Homer Spit. I have been wanting to visit for years, hearing all about how Homer was a funky, artsy town with this beautiful area called the Spit. My jaw just about dropped to my feet when we got there - it was the tackiest tourist place I have ever seen. And I've seen tacky tourist - I live in Florida! The drive down the spit was row after row of RV parks, souvenir shops, cheesy restaurants - I was just waiting for the Ripley's Believe it or Not to be right around the corner! The only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of one is that if you can lift your head above all that schlock the views are absolutely stunning. It's just a shame that commerce had to come along and ruin it all.

DON’T MISS THIS!

By Kim |

We loved the Spit! All the quaint cottages full of shopping food and things to do! We spent the good part of the day walking on the boardwalks that line both sides of the street. It is interesting to see all of the people camping up and down the Spit. The views are amazing with the ocean and mountains in the background. Loved the area!

Shop, Eat, People Watch

By Kepthe |

Great place to see eagles, shop, eat and people watch! We had a great time beachcombing and exploring on the spit. The eagles were amazing. Every time we visited there were at least 1 or 2 on the beach or flying around.

Camping & fishing

By Dreamer312390 |

Had a great time in Homer, Alaska on the slit. Camping, fishing, tour the town, shops, food, found the swing, all around good time.

Just the right mix of locals to tourists

By lauralam |

Visited Homer Spit while vacationing and loved the shops and restaurants. The local fishing industry was busy at work and I let locals in the diverse shops. The views of the mountains and water are amazing. While walking in the beach area, there was a sea otter playing in the water. Lots of fishing boats being chased by sea gulls. Tons of folks out fishing. Incredibly relaxing and fun!

Unique Experience with fun shops and great views!

By 972stefanim |

I’ve been to Homer many times and I never tire of the natural beauty that surrounds the area. The Spit is a must visit! There are several shops with local artisans selling their wares as well as several different kinds of food to choose from. It is fun to walk around the docks and look at all the boats as well. Take in some fresh air, some good food or coffee, and fetch some local souvenirs to take home!

Magical Place

By MountainMama |

We spent 4 days out on the spit at beach front RV park. I thoroughly enjoyed walking the ocean floor at low tide each night around 9:30 pm and watching the sun set. Along the spit you will find several shops, restaurants, ice cream shops, the ferry, tour companies to take you bear viewing, fishing, horseback riding, etc. From the shore you can spot all kinds of marine wildlife. We saw tons of Otters every night right off the coast as well as Eagles sitting on gravel bars.

Wonderful walking

By Mary R |

We walked along the very interesting water front admiring the boats and even a few seasonal homes. There are many artsy shops and fabulous seafood restaurants.

Came on Cruise ship but LOTS of local Alaskans here

By JanN216 |

Came on Cruise ship but LOTS of local Alaskans here. It’s the halibut Capitol of the WORLD we were told. Was a beautiful, warm, clear day but still brisk breeze. Walked to where shops and restaurants are and saw fish boats being unloaded. Very interesting and course ate delicious fresh halibut.

Unique place to stay on beachfront

By raandaka |

We stayed 3 nights at the Homer Spit Campground in a beachfront RV site. This was a great location with views across the bay and we saw whale plumes not far off shore. Location provided easy walking distance access to restaurants, activities & tours. We loved it. Highly recommend staying on the Spit.

This is less of a destination and more the place to start another adventure

By Steve H |

The Spit is interesting, and affords a number of shops and restaurants. This is also where all the boat tours depart from, as well as water taxis and the Alaskan Water Highway. A walk in the rocky beach beyond the condos at the end of the spit is worthwhile, as is a brief look at the “boat graveyard.”

Beautiful views, usual touristy shops

By Steve R |

The views all along the spit are awesome, we did not try any of the restaurants, we did go into most of the other shops and they pretty much seemed like touristy junk shops, really no place I would want to spend my money

So fun for a walk and some shopping.

By Glove |

We had so much fun walking up and down and exploring all the shops. We even went in some places twice. Don’t forget your wallet! And stop for a cinnamon roll at the little coffee/ice cream truck in front of the event center. All the ppl working the shops were so nice and welcoming. We would love to stay on the spit during our next visit.

Browse the Spit

Great place to visit to capture the local culture and take in some awesome food and gelato! Visit Captain Patties Fish House and walk a few doors down to the gelato shop for desert!

Homer- Amazing scenery

By jerRsaus |

Fantastic scenery, good beach walking, and excellent restaurants! The parking is t easy, but it’s absolutely with a drive out to the point to walk the boardwalk and take in the harbor and scenery.

Interesting vibe in a beautiful setting!

By IASMM |

Fun area to visit though be prepared to walk as parking may be limited at times. Tourist destination so be wary of prices but there is a variety of options from art, clothing, gifts, sightseeing tours and multiple eateries. The boardwalk setting makes it unique and very scenic, though it may be chilly since winds are right off the bay.

Many Unique Shops & Restaurants

By Travelcrazt |

We spent 2 days exploring the Homer Spit. There are many shops that offer great choices. Leave room in your luggage because you will find everything from t-shirts to salt water taffy. The great number of restaurants gives you many options. Be sure to shop around because the same gift will vary in price. It is fun to watch the boats go out to fish.

Home Spit is worth the trip from Anchorage

By travelingobserver |

Nothing against Homer, but for a tourist, Home Spit is where to be unless you want to visit a couple of great breweries in Homer. We were in an RV with a waterfront campsite. What a view! Everything is within walking distance and the speed limit keeps the traffic from being too hazardous. Everyone is freindely and the shops held my wife's interests for the few days that we stayed. There are plenty of good eats, too!

Stay on the Spit

By RabbitSam |

We chose to stay on the Spit to maximize our ocean experience. Lots of cute shops if you like that. Fishing charters everyplace. Centralized harbor. Even an eagle nest on a radio tower. Great views. Even saw a couple of cruise ships come in, but they really didn't seem to overwhelm the town.

Capitol of Halibut and Bald eagles

By Thomas M |

Perfect place to eat fresh fish and see bald eagles. Very nice. Park somewhere in the middle and take a walk. You will always see something.

Launchpad for fishing and bears

By ItchyFeet |

We spent 4 nights on the spit. Not much there: a few restaurants and several excursions offices for halibut fishing and flights to Kaitmai and Lake Clark National Parks to see bears. We don’t fish but took 2 bear trips: one with Bald Mountain air to Moraine Creek where we spent 4 hours with the bears on the river and another day we flew to Brooks Falls with Alaska Bear Adventures to see the iconic bears fishing on the falls. Both lifetime epic trips. Great place to do outdoor activities.

Great contrast from Glaciers to Ocean

By Brad L |

Wonderful place to go shopping and photo opportunities for glacier and ocean shots. Have to also go see the Salty Dawg when you are there.

Great place for fisherman.

By Jim S |

The biggest draw is fishing for Halibut, but the addition of artists galleries, restaurants, and RV campers makes it a good destination for anyone. The monument to lost fisherman is very nice. In July 2019 the lack of wildfire smoke was a real benefit.

Fishing galore!

By Navigate618456 |

Fun shopping and dining experiences. Took a fishing charter out from there and caught our limits in gray cod, halibut, and rock fish. On this particular charter, three legal-sized Lingcod were caught - unheard of!!!

A natural wonder and big highlight of Homer By the Sea :))

By G C |

Visitors from near and far love this natural wonder that’s a world famous feature of Homer :)). The Spit is the remnant moraine from an enormous glacier that once filled Kachemak Bay, and a paved road plus bicycle/walking paths extend along its entire length, all the way to Land’s End at it’s southernmost terminus. You’ll find a plethora of gift shops, eateries, outfitters and excursion operators, camp grounds/RV parks, and Alaska’s best harbor (with hundreds of boat slips and a recently renovated launch ramp; this is where you’ll board vessels to tour the Bay (eg Seldovia village or the art hamlet of Halibut Cove), go kayaking or hiking on the south side (Kachemak Bay State Park), catch fish aboard private + charter boats for great ocean fishing, etc. The popular Fishing Hole Lagoon on the Spit offers excellent salmon fishing, for folks who prefer to fish from the shore (rent angling tackle, buy lures/bait, and obtain advice from the Sport Shed across the road from the Hole). This place is awesome for photography, viewing wildlife, buying crafts made by Alaskan artists, lodging next to the sea, and satisfying your food + beverage cravings at the many cafes/restaurants found there. Enjoy :))

Stayed on the Spit

By andaLynnHaven_Fl |

Beachfront Lodge overlooking Kachemak Bay-lovely! Wine on the deck, sunset on the beach. A true Alaskan adventure in a "fishing village" atmosphere!

Cool 5 mile long Sand Spit with beautiful views

By Tony K |

We are out on the Spit camping in our RV. Beautiful views in all directions. Plus many places to buy things, eat and go out fishing for Halibut and other fish. It’s considered the “Halibut Fishing Capital of the World”.

"Homer for the Halibut"

By Y1599TZthomasb |

We spent a week on the Homer Spit. We really enjoyed the fishing, the local cuisine and the souvenir shopping. We actually traveled in June 2017.

Nice place to walk, shop, eat and relax

By bluesmama11 |

We enjoyed coming for dinner here a few nights, walking parts of the beach afterwards and also one afternoon walking all the way to the end.
In fact, if you get to the end, you can walk through the Land’s End hotel lobby there and out to the beach. Interesting how the little shops and restaurants are on boardwalks. Plenty of free parking but pay attention to the signs - some are for one hour, three hours or all day, etc.

Free Time on the Spit

By Patti |

A very interesting place to spend a hour or two. Great restaurants, interesting shops and snacks. Beautiful artwork from local artists.

Summer hotspot.

By ANSKY “The Bat in the Hat” |

Many things to do on the Homer Spit. Bars, restaurants, gift shops, fishing, camping, hiking and biking are all available options while visiting the Homer Spit in the summer. Highly recommended summer destination.

We walked and drove around the Spit.

By Journey743339 |

Loved the views! The shops were colorful and interesting. I found lots of good buys and had many interesting conversations with people in the stores. Very beautiful and friendly place. Really liked the Salty Sisters store for mermaid items.

Not that impressive

By alanb |

Yes it's a spit of land adorned with gift shops, restaurants and tour company outlets but other than that it offers very little apart from the seaman' s memorial.

Interesting place

By Natty Park Traveler |

First time visit and found it to be similar to other places we have been, the boardwalk outside Denali, Bar Harbor in Maine. Lots of gift shops, food places and businesses for the area.

Lots to see

By Robert L |

This area has restaurants, stores, sightseeing agencies and boats. Walking along the beach is another great option.

Wear comfy shoes.

By PickyBaer |

Long spit with a lot to see. We think there were a few whales, lots of birds, and clams. The shops run from 'made in China' to the real deal. You decide.

One of our favorites!

By CathyGeorgia |

After driving hundreds of miles sightseeing Alaska, this was one of our favorite places to walk around. There were lots of little shops to buy wonderful souvenirs, some restaurants, ice cream shop, and the old lighthouse, The Salty Dawg Saloon. Fun place to explore!

The Homer Spit

By mistyschulz |

The views from Homer Spit were fair with views of the mountains to the south and the inlet. The beach along the ocean side of the spit were sandy with a fair amount of rocks. We saw a sea otter get up from the beach and jump into the water immediately commencing to swim from us. The spit is rather busy. The buildings are generally what one would see in a oceanside community however many were on stilts.

Tourist area

By batterup55 |

The question is how many tourist restaurants, novelty shops, water tours and a sundry of tourist type businesses all congested in one spot? The answer is the Spit

Lands End Resort good for a meal and views

By edwardbaker42 |

We had a lovely evening meal at the Lands End Resort - book a table though.
Food was excellent and our waitress Rhapsody so keen to please

Picturesque

By Sharon R |

Go up to Skyline drive and take a pic of the Spit -- It's very distinguishable and there are flowers up there, too. I enjoyed just walking the Spit (along the harbor and watching all the boats) to all the gift shops and just people watching. The mountains were all indistinct while we were there for three days (possibly a mixture of hot to cool weather or the burning). But, they are still there!
We took the Alaskan Coastal Studies tour (Peterson Bay Day Tour & Kayak COMBO) and just loved it. It was all day and very educational but just fun, too.

Don't see the hype

By Ann B |

I didn't care for the spit. It was a bunch of little shops that basically had the same stuff in all of them. If limited on time I would skip it.

Great 2 days on the spit

By vatchr |

We spent two days at Land's End on the spit and thoroughly enjoyed our time in Homer. Homer Spit is a special place and is so full of culture and fun. We were there when the Lupines were in bloom and it was beautiful. The beach and the water with the mountains in the background make a beautiful backdrop for a very fun little town.

Beautiful!

By Britt J |

Amazing views all around! This place does not disappoint! Mountains & Water, to the little shops up and down the coast line!

Best part of the trip

By Joyce S |

We parked our RV at the Homer Spit Campground, beautiful scenery all around you and easy walking access to the charters.

Incredible beauty

By Wendy M |

Several restaurants and shops are in the area, though many were closed when we were there in late September. The boat docks, views and walking the beaches are the best.

Walk and Visit the Shops

By oldwoodworker |

The spit is an interesting place to walk and visit the shops. Many had reasonable prices and the variety was impressive. The shop workers were quite friendly.

Fun area

By Ken Q |

Interesting area with shops and restaurants and walking areas. Definitely a must see if you visit Homer.

Love to visit here on Alaska trips

By NizmoZX |

What makes this place special is the beautiful scenery in every direction. Mountains and water. Tons of fishing boats and charter fishing trips. There are also boats and ferry’s for day trips. Stop at the visitor center as you come down the hill into town. Tons of information there and they are very helpful. Keep in mind this is a high traffic tourist town. The food will be high priced and average quality. If you are in an RV the 4 campground are very tight and nothing special but they are on the water which makes up for a few things. Great ice cream at Spit Licks. Great place for a few days.

A Delight

By Alan K |

Small touristic easy going little village.

Plenty of tourist related activies such as Halibut fishing, bear viewing flights and water taxus to closest villages/

A Fun Spit, Um Spot, to Enjoy Nature

By KGTraveler_13 |

We spent the 11 days of our tour around many of Alaska's natural wonders and Homer Spit was a great place to finish our trip. Nature is worshipped throughout Alaska, and the folks in Homer provide services to help you take in as much of the great opportunities to commune with nature that you can think of. Members of our group took the water taxi to nearby island hikes, a seaplane to Kodiak Island for bear watching up close and nearly personal, and a fishing boat to go deep-sea fishing. We also camped on a beach at the far end of the spit where the ring of volcanic islands formed our horizon. What a backdrop! And there was often a playful sea otter just off the shore to entertain us.

The Spit is walkable, with many fun shops and eateries to check out while taking in the nature all around. I met up with family members of a friend who have been vacationing in Homer for more than 25 years. The trip is quite a hike from their home in Illinois, but that should give you an idea of the appeal of Homer (and Alaska) to the nature lovers and artists who escape there.

Make sure Homer Spit is part of your trip. It's got a special, quirky quality that is very welcoming and worth the trip.

Neat Geologic Wonder

By Mindy417 |

Such a neat little strip to visit. Know the geologic processes that created this little strip that boasts of cute eateries and gift shops.

Interesting Tourist Town

By L. Kiser |

The Homer Spit was an interesting tourist location with art galleries, shops, eateries and the famous Salty Dawg Saloon. The Salty Dawg Saloon is defininately worth a stop just to see all the dollar bills hanging on the walls and ceiling. You can easily walk to most everything on the Spit but the parking can be a bit crowded. There are alot of excursion companies which offer fishing trips, bear viewing, and more. The beach on the Spit was also unique with it's flat rocks and beautiful scenery. It too is worth the time to explore.

breathtaking views

By Jodi R |

Don't miss it... the scenery is amazing.. boats abound.... wildlife, quaint little shops and restaurants... loved watching the fishing, the fish prep and the beautiful birds, salmon, bald eagles and sea otters... one of our favorite places to walk around

My favourite city in Alaska

By Manzhi |

Truly Alaskan experience. This place is beautiful beyond any words. I liked how peaceful it was. The option to take out a bear viewing tour was a plus.

Lots to See and Do Here

By Tom D |

We really enjoyed our time visiting Homer Spit. Engage a water taxi for a private tour of the bay, or go shopping at the many small and unique shops, have lunch or dinner at several of the restaurants or just sit on the Spit and watch the wildlife. It’s hard to beat!

My favorite place on earth

By Harold |

Homer is my happy place or should I say our happy place my wife and I travel there every year for a week or two. Our hopes are to retire in Homer in a few years. The picturesque views, the Spit the surrounding mountains simply heaven on earth. And the fishing is outstanding. All the restaurants and shops on the Spit are fabulous and the people are fantastic.

A Rare and Unique Find

By shugs5 |

Anyone that has not experienced "The Spit" located in Homer, AK should! It is so unique, with water located on on three sides. It is a little promontory that juts out into the ocean at "the end of the road" as Homer likes to refer to itself. There are restaurants and nice little shops to visit along the sandy stretch of beaches, where kids, dogs, and families enjoy the beach. We stumbled upon this place and are glad that we were able to find it.

Loved Homer, the spit is touristy but cute, food in town was great, farmers market was great, and the trip on the Danny j to halibut cove is a must. Stayed at Lands’s End, really nice place for a 3 star.
