So interesting and fun

By CCLesChats |

Not being a racing fan, we were in Indianapolis for a conference and thought that the tour might be interesting.
The tour van drove onto the speedway! We had a chance to "kiss the bricks", that is, if you can get down to the ground. No worries - they had a faux brick for us seniors :)
After the van tour, we walked around the museum. There were many vintage race cars going back to the early 1900s and later. Very informative presentations on racing engines and history.

Good museum

By Matt |

Went in with a friend who's a big fan. I don't mind it (so obviously my score reflects that). Had a lot of cool cars in there (surprise!) but not much else. Would have expected a little more in there, something to engage others who are wanting to read up about a lot of the history and learn more - such as myself.
The track was closed so unfortunately we couldn't go round it.

Various Track Tours and Museum

By Jacob H |

Everytime I have family from out of State visit, I try to take them there for a visit. LOVE the lap on the track on the Kiss the Bricks Tour! The virtual driving simulation is also always fun! The tour of facilities is also nice!

Take the VIP Tour

By kdpbball |

The tour was $30 each, but worth every penny. First we had a 90 minute guided tour led by Paul. The bus takes you on a 20 mph trip around the oval. Then we got out to “kiss the bricks” at the finish line. Paul took us up into the Media Room, private suites, the pit areas, gasoline alley and the Pagoda. The Corvette Pace Cars were a real treat to see. After the tour, we spent a lot of time in the Museum. This is included in the VIP cost. The employees are all friendly and knowledgeable. They want you to enjoy your experience here. There are two gift shops and a clearance shop in an adjacent building—check here for bargains.

Great museum helps you understand the Indy 500 fully

By Andi A |

Nicely done recommended to combine it with a tour through the race track - a lots of historic cars in display

Trip Down Memory Lane

By Wheels282 |

I had been to the races in the 1960's. There were two gentlemen working that remembered the races from then. In fact. one of the men had a dad that raced. There were cars from most years that you could view up close. It was really neat to see all the changes. They even have one car you can sit in. We spent around two hours here. Part of our group added the kiss the bricks tour where a bus takes you around the track.

Truly the racing capital of the world

By Keyur D |

To watch Indy 500 race live is still on our list but in the meantime we decided to visit the Museum at least. If you are in to car racing, you must visit this museum and take the tour to the actual racing tracks and stadium. We enjoyed the museum and different sports cars, than went on to VIP tour to see the media box, pavilion and also the actual race track. It was fun and I won't hesitate to recommend to visit this place if you are in Indy

Awesome visit

By musiclvr1234 |

My family and friends were in town for the Indianapolis Colts game and decided to go to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The museum is amazing, there is so much to see and do. On display is every car that won the Indy 500, there's a section for children with car simulators, and we did a tour that was informative and exciting. Everything was very clean and organized.

A must for racing fans

By toddmQ5710XI |

This Museum has such an amazing collection of racing history (3 or 4 times what can be displayed) it is always on my short list when I am in Indy, since I always see something new

Awesome Museum And Race Track

By N4685WEN |

Even if you are not into racing, if you go to Indy, you have to go here. This place is just so iconic! We planned part of our vacation around going here and got there just as they opened, and that is when we discovered that there were additional tours you could take, so we did the Kiss The Bricks one. Basically it's about 20 or so people in a small bus that goes out and does a lap around the race track. And it stops at the start/finish line (the bricks) where you can get out, look around, and take pictures. Despite it being a cooler and rainy Monday morning, almost everyone in our group got down on our hands and knees and actually kissed the bricks! The racing simulators on the second floor are fun too. Every car is in pristine condition and it is fun reading about each one.

Good for race fans, but not informative for others

By EugeC |

The Museum is great for racing fans. For those new or curious about racing, the Museum seems to be a missed opportunity. There's lots of great hardware -- cars galore, etc. -- but very little explanation for beginners of what it all means.
The simulator is nice, and a section describing traditions like milk and brick kissing is good.

The Museum sits inside the track, and visitors can readily see race cars zooming by if they visit at the right days and times.

A short introductory film would be a great help to convey the excitement of racing and answer questions that non-experts may have: Why is the Indy 500 so famous, and how does it compare to other races? Who are the people driving the cars (ie who are the drivers? where do they come from? what are the sport's big names)? How important is car design vs. driver skill in winning? What strategies do winning drivers use? Are there video highlights of some classic races and finishes?

Unique place

By sa-travel10 |

You have to visit this place at least once in your life. I am not a car race enthusiast, but the museum and speedway really impressed me. Museum is very well organized with informative displays. And just standing in the middle of the speedway where one of the largest sporting events in the world happens, Indy 500, really gets you excited. Worth the visit.

Great trip for racing enthusiasts

By Rodeha1 |

My last trip to this historic museum was 50 years ago! If you have never been or come to Indy and want to experience the history of the Indy 500, do not pass up the opportunity to take in this place. All the old racers are really interesting— I love the old turbine Parnelli drove in 1967. And the trip around the track is fun as well.

Great Visit to Indianapolis Speedway and Museum

By justfriendstwo |

This is my 3rd time to visit. We took the "Golf Cart" tour this time. It is an amazing experience for those who are fans and those who are not. Our Guide was just phenomenal !!! It is an absolutely great bargain. Got to see just about everything
except garages which were being used for Covid Vaccine Clinic . Not a big deal.
So much to see and so much to learn even for a race fan. The golf Cart make it easier for those of us that are not as mobile as we used to be. Museum itself is amazing and always being updated. The track was good before and Penske is making it even better. It is a Must See !!

Great Tour, Great Museum, History

By Travel Pros |

We went to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum and track tour to check it out. The track was in use so we could not take the drive around the speedway, but the tram tour was great, our driver and tour guide were very knowledgeable and informative. The tour took us to the pagoda, Press area and garage area. The museum has a great collection of cars, a driving simulator, a car to sit in and the trophy. The staff was very friendly the museum was very easy to navigate and a great tour into Indycar history. This is a must for racing fans. They had a nice gift shop but no refreshments on site. The museum is easy to locate between turns 1 and 2 through the tunnel. After the guard gate there is plenty of parking and a short walk inside. The tour does include walking and stairs. We will be back.

Would have been a 5 if Buick hadn't rented the track.

By recorder |

Not big racing fans, but did not want to come to Indianapolis and miss this place. We choose the Golf Cart Tour hoping to get a ride on the track and kissing the bricks. Between the time we reserved the tour and the time we got there, Buick rented the track to impress their dealers with some Electric vehicles. But the museum was great and the tour was great. J.D. loves racing, loves cars, and is a font of knowledge concerning the Indianapolis 500 and the IMS. We learned a lot on the tour and in the museum.

Bucket list

By Sparks |

A bucket list check off for my hubbie on his 60th. Surpassed his expectations. Great crew, driver, registration peeps, parking etc. will go again. Highly recommend three laps minimum.

A race car fan dream

By Paul C |

If you like car racing of any kind going to Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum is a fantastic experience l it’s a must. It’s like going to Cooperstown for baseball fans.

Such a great experience!

By Sonia S |

The trip to the Indy 500 museum was well worth the money! I am not a race fan per se but enjoyed learning about the history of the track and next year I will watch and pick out details that I saw firsthand!

Nice small race car museum for Speedway fans

By drichrx |

Nice one hour diversion while driving through Indy. This small museum is a must for Speedway fans. Has the Ford vs. Ferrari cars in display. Even saw the winning car on the year I was born!

Race fans and car enthusiasts will love this!

By Darlene B |

"Gentlemen start your engines"..... The sound of the races may be in your head and heart but it is here that your eyes will take in the Indy 500 home. You drive under the track to the visitor center. Your ticket will get you into the museum and on a tram ride around the famous track hearing about its history and feeling the slope of the big turns. The museum has cars, helmets, photos and more. When we visited, there was a special display on Mario Andretti with lots of great things to see.

Amazing

By TennesseePostcard |

I went just for an Indianapolis souvenir and this ended up being my favorite part of the trip. You pull in through tunnels and the museum is in the island of the race track. Free parking. Nice employees. Impressive collection. They had a Penny machine and I Took home some postcards for my collection.

Must see in Indianapolis!

By Melissa B |

This place is huge! I am not a racing fan and know nothing about racing, but I enjoyed this museum and kiss the bricks tour.

The kiss the bricks tour included a lap around the track and time to actually kiss the bricks at the finish line. The tour bus was air conditioned with a taped recording giving the history of the track.

The museum was small, but has a large collection of cars from throughout the years. It was really interesting to see the evolution of cars throughout the years. My favorite exhibit was the tracksuits worn by drivers. I love clothes so it was fun to see those. This is a must see place in Indianapolis!!

Worth the trip

By cheryl m |

Our group of six adults enjoyed the museum. We loved the golf cart tour. Our guide, Tim took us to a lot of the behind the scenes place- media center, pagoda and the garage area. The museum is very up to date with the latest information.

A MUST FOR ANY RACE FAN

By SPA007 |

W e took a slight detour on our Florida Snow Bird trip to see this iconic venue. Unfortunately it was pouring rain that day, but we still did the round the track / kiss the brick tour. Was VERY informative & I am happing to report me knees HAVE dried out finally . Well worth the trip if you are a race fan ! we HOPE to possibly do the 10 hour drive to attend a race sometime in the future

Museum missed the mark, but the track tour was exceptional

By Disneybus |

The museum to us missed the finish line. Be sure to view the introduction movie: as racing novices this helped with the history. The museum seemed to be just cars and trophies, spectacular but redundant. We wish there were hands on exhibits, videos of these cars and drivers in action, and interactive things to do and learn. Be sure the track shuttle buses run on your tour day - they obviously don't when there is track activity. The combined museum and track tour is $20 The narrated "Kiss the Bricks" bus tour is exceptional and a must do! Your bus stops at the finish line and allows you to walk the track taking in the grandiose and history of this spot. Of course you can "Kiss the bricks!"

Wonderful way to spend a Couple of Hours or Half a Day

By Dean M |

I was passing through Indianapolis and thought I'd take a couple of hours to see the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I got there just as they were loading for tour of the Raceway itself. The tour was in Open Trams and gave a brief history of the Speedway as they took us onto the track and around to the Yard of Bricks (a strip of bricks that serve as the Start-Finish Line) where we had a chance to get out, look around and even participate int eh tradition of Kissing the Bricks. After the Tour I returned to the Museum and spent a couple of hours looking at over a hundred year span of Cars that have raced there. I could have easily spent considerably more time, if I were not headed on up the road.

Great Time

By ydnar |

We went to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway museum and it was extremely interesting and fun. If you go, make sure you take the time to watch the movie (last less than 10 minutes). We were able to drive a simulator to see if you qualified to race in the Indy 500 (that was fun). We took a tour of the garage area and the media center (we took a bus, this was in addition to the cost of the museum, but well worth it). They were not giving tours of the race track when we were there because of the race car experience that they were doing that day, but it was fun watching these race cars going by. It is well worth your time to do this.

The Best Racing Museum Anywhere !

By RGP |

This is just a must to see if your in Indianapolis. The Racing Capital of The World. Great Museum and Racing Gift Shops. Make sure you take the Bus Track Tour around and on the entire track . Kiss the Famous Yard of Bricks on this tour. Just Fantastic ! Take the Family !

A must for a car enthusiast

By Toni T |

Great cross section through over 100 years of motor sports and automotive technology. Well maintained exhibition, sufficient space around the cars to look at and photograph. Nice shop.

Indy speedway museum

By E5882AUwilliaml |

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum tour is a history of America’s premier race. A overview of the history of America’s ingenuity of car racing and the technology associated with it. A sampling of the cars raced and the drivers.
Take the tour with the guides to get their knowledge. Very well worth the admission price.

Ladies

Short stop on the trolley tour. Wish I could have stayed longer. A lot of history. Video room is a plus. Helpful information since I had no idea of the history. Good prices at the souvenir shop!

A great and different experience

By Milidf |

At first we thought to just take a quick picture at an entrance but we decided to check the museum. Once we spoke with the hosts at the entrance we decided to check the museum. It was a wonderful experience. The museum is filled with history, wonderful facts and interactive experiences that are fun even for those how aren’t fans of car races. The experience was great and we enjoyed the visit much more than we expected. It’s a great experience for family or friends visiting.

Indy 500 experience

By chuck597 |

We drove around the track in a bus, got out and kissed the bricks. We even witnessed the pit crews practicing their pit changes. It was pretty cool!

Enjoyable Track Experience

By Jennifer M |

My friend and I took the View from the Top Tour with Gary. He was a great tour guide. The museum was closed, but we got to hear a lot about the background on the tour. It was $15 per person, so it was definitely reasonable! Highly recommended.

For the Motorsport Fans!

By SergeGTS |

It is quite small. No doubt about it. But I really enjoyed my time here.

I did the Kiss the Brick tour, and the feeling of standing on the track cannot be described in words. They took pictures of us at the bricks, and the tour was well worth it. 10/10!

A Must See Museum

By C D |

Run do not walk to the newly renovated Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. Having visited the previous museum several times over the years I was not expecting how different and improved the museum would be. You will forget what the previous museum even looked like once you are inside the renovated space. 100% Changed!!! Innovation space for youth and an education room, the new Penske Gallery, the Gasoline Alley Experience, the STARTING LINE RACE DAY EXPERIENCE, and of course all the great old cars and great racing artifacts. You could spend hours in here before you even get to the gift shop.

Amazing museum !

By Cheryl Dana |

The new museum is beyond AMAZING! I loved the previous one, but this one is a absolute must to visit if you are at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway!

Great Museum and don't skip the tours!

By Have Camera, Will Travel |

I have been to Indy Speedway Museum a few times now, but this was my first chance to take one of the tours. It is well worth it.

There is something cool about driving through the tunnel and up to the museum. I had a pass to get in, but paid for my Kiss the Bricks Tour. The tour was leaving in about 20 minutes, so I did a little shopping before hand and put my stuff in my car. It was a weekday in September, so it wasn't busy. There were 3 people on our morning tour. We rode around the track in a shuttle van and heard stories from both the prerecorded narration and out on-board guide. We made our stop at the yard of bricks at the start/finish line and got photos taken. I had them take pictures with my camera and also the photographer there took a couple, which I purchased for $5 each. They are bordered with a IMS Museum logo and in hard plastic sleeves. I good price for the pictures.

Back at the museum, i wandered through the cars in both the main museum and the wing that has the photo opp car, which I passed on that picture. There is a special Mario Andretti room with cars and memorabilia. I took hundreds of pictures.

The museum is a good size. It's not so big that it takes all day and not so small that you could cruise through it in 20 minutes. With the tour, I was there about 2 1/2 hours.

Interesting, even for non-racing fans!

By Jamie Leigh |

We went to the museum and did the track tour about 3 weeks after the Indy 500 was raced this year. I am not a racing fan, but my husband is. The tour was interesting even for me with my minimal knowledge. The staff is super enthusiastic, which is infectious.

INDY ROCKS!

By Bill W |

IMS, and the Museum there, is a stellar experience. From the experienced guides to the amazing collection of racing cars and gear, to the short movie that explains the history that so many of us have only limited knowledge of, its all very very good. Even for those that are not IndyCar race fans, the museum and the view of the world famous track is worth going to. I highly recommend it.

Indy 500

By Castelsa1 |

We had a lot of fun!
Kiss the brick is a must!
Took a lot of pictures
Slow motion video running the finish line was very funny!

There was a problem

By bogie0006 |

We drove from Virginia Beach to be on the track and kiss the bricks. When we got here the track was closed for a week. Nothing on website. Did not know until we walked in. I was not alone in my disappointment. We went into museum. It was okay. A few cars and saw the trophy. Sorry to say nascar has a better museum and I’m an Indy guy. If in the future please put something on your website. Mike

A bucket list for sure.

By Edwin Wells |

You just have to go. To experience it is to pump life into your body. It is holy ground. The museum is a must see too.

Shop is inside the museum

By J David |

When visiting the track grab a souvenir from the gift shop located in the museum. Located in the front of the museum. There is no charge to enter.

They have a lot of merchandise that will satisfy the entire family. Everything with Indy 500 or Brickyard 400 logos. Mugs, clothing, prints and nice jackets. Also nice die cast cars of different sizes. They have a track table for kids to play with cars.

Overall good shop and staff was nice. We did not purchase anything. 3.5

A "MUST DO" FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN CAR RACING

By Gary-Patti D |

A lot of neat exhibits and profiles of specific drivers that change periodically. Enjoyed the museums film. Don't miss the exhibit in the very back past the restrooms. It has a lot of extra interesting items.
The real thrill was seeing the cars on display and how the race, cars and equipment has changed over the years. On the back wall is the chronological list of winners and their racing speeds, which is unbelievable!!
If you are a AAA member, there is also a discount (although minimal).

Danica Patrick! Best of Indianapolis

By JimDeBerry |

Affordable and fun.

Gift shop is free to enter, free monuments outside. The track tour is worth the cost. It’s $20 adults and $10 for kids. you ride around the track in a shuttle bus. learn the history and kiss the bricks.

In the museum you can sit in an open wheel car, see bunches of open wheel cars, Indy to nascar, even dreamworld turbo is there for the kids.

Lots of rich history and facts.

You never know who might pop in. Danica Patrick, Al Unser Sr, and many more on the day I went.

Great place for race enthusiasts

By JMoore0714 |

Took my friend from Boston to see it. He was very impressed with all the cars inside the museum. He even had me take his picture sitting in one that is set up for that. We took a bus ride around the entire track and learned all about the history of the track.

Speed towards racing history

By BTFeedback |

Whether you're a racing fan or not, it was pretty cool to see the race track and the museum. The museum contain many race cars going as far back as when the Speedway had its first race thru today's most recent race car. At the time I was there, they were in the process of adding more artifacts but it was not open yet so I kind of missed out of what's to come soon. I think they could have expanded and added more information about the track and history as it was mostly displays of artifacts.

To go on to the track, it is a slight additional cost on top of the museum. You hop onto the minibus and they take you around the track where you get to see the pit stop and stop and see the Brick. The ride is narrated by a staff as you are driven around the track. Before making your trip to the museum, be sure to call ahead to make sure there isn't an event going on that would close the Kiss the Bricks tour.

Saw it from the outside

By Scott G |

We arrived too late in the day to get a tour, however, we were able to see it from the outside and get a view of the speedway which was nice.

Took afternoon off from business trip to enjoy

By chfd1dj |

If you love racing Indy Car style you will like this museum. Many of the Indy 500 winners on display. Speacil exhibits right now of Andy Granatelli and Rick Mears

Speed is everything ❤️

By Alessandro |

I love motor races, therefore I’ve been dreaming to visit Indianapolis since my teenage. The speedway is as expected, breathtaking, instead the museum disappointed me because it is not at the level of fame of this historical race.

AMAZING BATHROOMS

By Kentuckyyyy |

If you haven't been to the IMS Museum and checked out the new bathroom updates you def should! Big fan of the museum here and I love the new bathroom artwork!

Attended the 105th running of the Indy 500

By Judith B |

My husband and I, along with family and friends, have been going to the race for more than 40 years - we were so happy to be able to attend again this year after having to miss going last year because of the Covid pandemic. The Speedway handled the 40% capacity crowd really well so that I think everyone in attendance felt safe - and appreciated.

Quick Fun Visit

By FabulousTL |

Fun time for all. Saw some cars racing/practicing on the track. Great to watch and hear! A lot of wonderful race cars on display, old and new. Plenty of information available. Different admission options and tours, and prices. Very clean. Restrooms and gift shop. Lovely grounds. Plenty of free parking.

Best Track in the World!

By Chad V |

Every time I’m in Indianapolis I stop by or Drive by This Jude Racing Complex. I’m a huge Race fan Formula one NASCAR. You name it. You have to see this Place!

A must in Indianapolis - for races fans, museum geeks, and people who love shiny things.

By Sarah Stierch |

Great museum - every time I visit Indy I go and see something new. The cars are beautiful, the stories are amazing, and the staff and docents are so freaking knowledgeable it blows my mind every time. Great gift shop, too.

If you haven't done it, do one of the tours - it's a once in a life time experience for many.

Even if you're not a huge race fanatic, it's a unique experience and one you'll only find at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway!

Kiss the track tour

By Baybug2 |

It was Veterans Day and they gave us tour discounts and discounts on merchandise we bought! Tour was cool. We got some great pics and even got to kiss the bricks!

IMS was an interesting experience

By Sanj2561 |

The museum itself was undergoing a renovation and won't be ready until 2025, so we took a 30 minute "view from the top" tour of the grounds. I'm not a racing fan at all, but did enjoy this informational tour. The guide kept it interesting! The tour was a resonable price too. Aftwards we stopped at the gift shop to buy souveniers.

Very pleasant experience

By paolo p |

I have been there occasionally and I have enjoyed the museum as well as the track tour including the “kiss the brick” experience

Fun time on tour

By Sandra T |

We took a tour of the Indianapolis Speedway in Indiana. Took a bus tour that was 1.5 hours long. It was raining so the outdoor portion of the tour was not quite as fun as it would have been in dry weather. Took a ride around the track in the bus, opportunity to “kiss the bricks”, photo ops on the winners stand, tower.

Hello. I'm going to go see the race this coming May 26th. Can I visit the museum? What is the price of the ticket?
If you can respond it would be greatly appreciated. 😊

Learn and see the history of Indy 500 racing

By J David |

The greatest spectacle in racing ran its 103rd Indy 500 last month I reflected back on my visit to the museum a couple of years ago. It's a review I've wanted to weigh in on because it was so enjoyable for the kids, well me too! The fact I'm a Hoosier also holds sentimental value.

The location is in Speedway Indiana which is on the Northside of Indianapolis. Just miles from I70 and not too far from the airport. Surface parking is across from the museum. Get your cameras out for a photo op, it's a looker from the outside.

Admission is charged, I can't recall the price now can purchase extras like a lap around the track a pro photos in the car. Nothing was outrageously priced for a family.

Once inside you could spend a day if your a car nut and read everything I suppose. Most would take two hours tops. We opted for the track lap in a van which provides a tour of the grounds and nearby golf course.

With 103 years of Brickyard history the museum is surprisingly not that large. Kids can get in a few for a photo. There were a few interactive things, but not enough. I recall a short movie, but there is no theater. The kids enjoyed themselves but was excited to get on the track.

Our scheduled van departure was up front. A nice woman took our family of four out, no one else was in the 8 passenger van. A card key got us into the secured area. Then we were off and got the history of the track and even drove to a blazing speed of 50 mph at one point. Well darn!

The Indy 500 is a piece of racing history as the oldest major car racing competition in the world. I feel confident even if your not a Motörhead you would enjoy learning about the racing history. Also don't miss the fantastic store packed with everything racing and specific Indy 500 and NASCAR Brickyard 400.

Surprisingly Awesome Experience

By Gayle B |

I am not into Nascar or any type of racing, but my family wanted to go to this museum, so I went. What a huge surprise!!! I loved it! The employees there were exceptionally nice, and the car collection was superb. I would absolutely recommend the Kiss the Bricks tour. So happy I went. It was worth it! We may even go back to see the big race next May...

More enjoyable than I expected

By George A |

This was a surprisingly interesting museum. I enjoy racing, not necessarily Indy cars, but can appreciate the technology and craftsmanship that goes into these machines. I really enjoyed having cars from different years' races displayed--it's really fascinating to see the evolution of the racers over time. The timeline of events on the back wall was great historical context to put it all in perspective as well. Non-racing fans, or those who don't enjoy cars might be a bit bored. I did not take the track tour due to lack of time, but in hindsight wish I had.

Great historical place

By Andrew W |

You have to visit the speedway if visiting Indianapolis it’s such a place full of history you just have to see the tradition and the present

Quick stop

By GreatTraveltime |

Tours were not available during our visit because the track was reserved for a private event. However, we were able to take a couple of pictures and watch some of the cars on the track.

Iconic Indianapolis 500!

By jps1980 |

Even if you are not a race fan, you can enjoy this museum and the guided bus tour of the famous Speedway.

Kissing the bricks

By Ashley |

Had a great time taking to tour & kissing the bricks. Very informative & definitely interesting to see and learn about the history of the speed way

Call first

By Deborah G |

Call first since the web page isn't up-to-date. We planned a visit, checked the web site to ensure that they were open, drove 2.5 hours only to discover that they were closed. I recognize that these are trying times with varying shut-downs. My expectation was that someone would keep the web page current. Such a disappointment!

Most Amazing Experience

By @Drr1970 |

It is the home of the Indianapolis 500 . It is located on the corner of 16th Street and Georgetown Road, approximately six miles (10 km) west of Downtown Indianapolis.

Petrol head heaven

By Richard C |

After wanting to visit the Motor Speedway on one of our previous visits to the United States but having to cancel, there was no way we were missing it this time. After parking the car I fell out into the heat clutching an assortment of cameras and phones and leapt straight into persistent cameraman mode, forgetting my good lady Wife in the process. After a few words of “encouragement “ I regained my composure and headed for the museum. Now, when we tried to book a tour from England, there didn’t seem to be any available, so, it was with much pleasant surprise and speed of approach that we sprinted for the tour desk, sprinted is a somewhat bold statement for me, my knees are an ongoing source of confusion and merriment for my surgeon, I sort of roll from one side to the other, but I’m fast with it😊 Once there the very kind gentleman informed us that the last golf buggy tours for the day had gone, once again I contemplated hurling myself to the floor and wailing uncontrollably, but my Wife has it covered. After explaining that we’d visited from England the very kind gentleman suggested the private tour with Gary, $30 each and it lasts about 1.5 hours. The standard tour was $20 so we went for it. Now this was a very special tour, there was us two and our brilliant tour guide, Gary - yes I know I’ve named him earlier but he deserves all the namechecks going, he was great. Not only did we get a narrated lap of the track, along with Gary’s extra bits of information, we also got to kiss the bricks, go up in the Pagoda, visit the press rooms, the private suites, drive through the huge RV Park, and through the garages, oh, and stand on the rostrum and look down on the winners enclosure for the Indy 500. All this time Gary was kindly telling us lots more information and taking pictures of the two crazy Brits at various famous locations. Awesome. Then when we had finished our tour, we went into the museum, for free courtesy of our VIP tour badges, and what a fabulous place this is too. I was roaming about like a mad thing trying to take pictures of all the cars and memorabilia, there’s lots of it. If you are remotely interested in Motor Sports, this is a must do. Take the VIP tour, it’s brilliant, ask for Gary, his infectious enthusiasm for this event is something to behold

An Amazing Venue to Visit

By Michael C |

This was our first visit to IMSM and we were quite impressed. In addition to the museum exhibits - definitely worth the trip - the lap around the track and the "kiss the bricks" experience was an added delight. But for dirt track racing fans we were literally drooling over the special exhibit of dirt track/sprint cars on display. At least 50 significant cars with full histories and driver bios were on display. What an amazing array of cars from some very famous owner and driver collections. A once in a lifetime display not to be missed. Visit the Speedway website to verify how long this display will be available.

Must see for race fans!

By Maltipoo16 |

Have been going to the Indy 500 for the past 3 years. Went to the museum for the first time this year. I had a great visit. As a IndyCar fan, I found the museum very interesting and informative. Really enjoyed looking at all the Indy 500 winning cars from all of the past races. Even though it was race weekend and the museum was packed I still had a great experience!

A must see tourist attraction.

By mws261 |

Everyone from around the world knows about 'the race.' As such the all want to see 'the track.' This makes a visit to the museum a virtual 'must.' Everyone wants a picture while sitting in the car. (An Indy 500 racer there for people to get in to have their picture taken.) The Borg-Warner trophy with the winner's faces molded on the sides is also an interesting site. An interesting fact is that the museum is not just about the 500. It covers other racing history as well. My favorite is the 'swiss cheese car." You should go and discovery that one yourselves!!!

Great Place To Spend A Couple Hours

By Douglas G |

I used to work EMS for the Speedway years ago, so I enjoy the opportunity to return and visit the museum. Since I only go every couple of years the displays change enough to keep it both entertaining and interesting.

Interesting!

By deebug2470 |

We stopped here while passing thru Indianapolis on the way home for vacation. We only wanted to see the museum but had to pay an extra $25. for some event going on. It was a prestigious corvette show which wasn’t correctly explained to us at the gate. We thought we were paying for parking and our tickets. Once we parked and walked inside we had to pay again for the museum tickets. They were really reasonably priced. I only wish they wouldn’t have charged for an event we didn’t have the time for or care to see. Overall the museum was well laid out, the staff was friendly and we really enjoyed the cars. We especially liked the older ones.

Must See!

By 4forus |

I’m not a racing enthusiast, but do enjoy cars. With that being said, this is a great place to visit even if you’re not a race car or racing fan. The Indianapolis 500 and speedway is a cultural icon and worthy of visiting. The museum is well done and includes an impressive collection of Indy cars that were 1st place winners. They even have the race car that won the first Indianapolis 500 in 1911, as well as the trophy. If you visit, then you really have to include the optional tour of the racetrack that takes you on an informative ride around the track in a bus. You even get to walk on the track at the start/finish line and can “Kiss the Bricks” if you wish!
I had two of my teenage kids with me and they were engaged, impressed and actually told me that they had fun and thanked me for bringing them. So, it’s got that going for it! If you’re going to be in Indianapolis or just driving through, plan some time (probably 1.5 to 2 hours) and go to the speedway!

Interesting

By Robyn S |

We enjoyed the museum even not being huge racing fans. We also did the kiss the bricks tour which I recommend.

Beautiful Track

By MorganHannigan88 |

We arrived a little to late to actually do the tour but the people we did meet were so friendly. We enjoyed being able to look through the gift shop. They closed at 5:00 and we got there about 4:45 so we knew we didn’t have enough time. The track is beautiful and would love come watch a race.

The home of racing

By Edwin Wells |

Another really great experience to kiss the bricks at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and to go to the museum was just awesome. If you have the chance you got to go

Very cool for racing history buffs.

By WindyCityTrvlr |

Tons of cars and interactive things to do. If you are into cars, definitely worth the visit. If your kids have seen cars the movie or like racing in general, definitely visit.

There is plenty of parking and everyone was kind and friendly. Lots of cars to explore and seeing a race track up close is one of a kind!

When you leave, it's like you're heading into a race, very cool.

A beautiful place

By Slot King Dream |

You would have to stop in here at least once in your lifetime for the Indianapolis 500 it is beautiful it's amazing so it's loud so have your ear plugs but the atmosphere in the people are truly amazing even the Brickyard 400 enjoy smell the fumes smell the rubber

Must see place

By Christine E |

Anyone who love the speedway . Must see this place . It so cool to learn how the racer thought the years have changed for the better to help them and the cars . It’s great learn about and you get to tour the track and kiss the bricks

Great piece of history

By Aris L |

This was a great experience and it showcased a the long history of the speedway. The staff was very friendly and helpful and if you’re lucky, you can get an excellent view of cars doing laps!

The one and only

By Gene J |

Here in an off year (covid). In town for Indiana Sprint Weeks. A great place to spend an off afternoon.

A Must See

By Raylene Brown |

The Museum is located inside the track. You drive underneath the track to access it. Every winning car is on display. You can also take a bus around the track and kiss the bricks. I would plan on spending a couple of hours to enjoy it.

Must Seen Even Not a Race Lover

By ErmanErdemli |

This place is full of history of Indy500 starts from 1911. From the first winner car in 1911 to present you can see the development of not only race cars but also successes in the history. Even if you are not a race lover, this is the place you need to see.

Good time!

By Kim C |

It was a good experience for the whole family from 6 years old to 71! This was our second visit. Definitely recommend

Stop on the Way South

By Rick H |

I've been here before but only during Indy 500 weekend so it was nice to visit without the mass crowds. If you're a race fan you need to go go. Nuff Said.
My only disappointment is that are no Penske race winners in the museum. He's won 18 of them and now owns the place so hopefully that will be rectified.

Beautiful museum

By Maltipoo16 |

If you are interested in motor racing or cars in general, you will definitely enjoy this museum. It is full of previous Indy 500 winning cars and has a featured exhibit that changes every year. This was my second visit, as the featured exhibit this year is Mario Andretti and the previous year was the Unser family. Great for all ages! Will definitely be back next May to visit before the Indy 500.

Kiss the Bricks!

By Dewayne P |

I went on a Monday morning. There was ample parking when I arrived shortly before it opened. The museum is a nominal fee but saw there was a guided "Kiss the Bricks" tour for about $10 more so jumped on it. You get taken onto the track in a trolly-like cart and driven around the track. You stop at the finish line and are able to get out to take pictures or kiss the bricks. It has a tour host, but is mostly a recording. Afterwards you are let into the museum to explore. I am not a huge racing fan but was in awe of the first Indy 500 winning car and other cars they have on display. It was worth the money in my opinon.

Fantastic!

By Mechelle M |

This place was fantastic! We did not give ourselves enough time -there was so much interesting information and displays ! The simulator was good fun and as it was only 4 laps the wait time was not long. The staff were informative and friendly -thanks Stuart . We were also allowed to go up on an infield stand to take photos ! Very highly recommended

The Greatist Spectacle in Racing

By dmen12018 |

If you've ever following the Indianapolis 500, you need to see this museum. First, it's actually inside the storied racetrack...you'll enter off of 16th street through a tunnel. You'll see the Indy cars that made history on this track, starting the with Marmon Wasp that won the very first race in 1911. Depending on what's happening at the track, you can also take a tour of the course, stopping at the start/finish line. Our driver volunteered to take our picture there. Along the way, you'll get a lot of interesting information about this famous track and it's famous race. The docents are especially helpful. I asked an obscure question about the 1966 race, and the docent took the time to look up the answer for me. If you're into motorsport, this is the place to be.

Amazing site to see!

By Jessica M |

True classic and a must see when in Indy! Nothing better than the Brickhouse! Definitely worth taking the trip to it.

Vroom, Vroom!

By LABDRB |

Great day at the the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Was in one of the tower suites, fully catered with bar. The servers were so kind and helpful. Our business event included basically all access passes. To receive the pit passes, you simply just had to scan a QR code, answer some questions, take a picture of yourself and surrender your drivers license while walking the grounds. Very easy. When first built it originally had about 3.2 million paving bricks. These bricks were laid in a way that created a “brickyard” racing surface, hence its nickname. The first Indy 500 race took place in 1911, covers 560 acres, making it one of the largest sports facilities in the world. Today, we got to meet Tony Kanaan, who has a great story to tell. He was the Indianapolis 500 winner in 2013 and the IndyCar Series champion in 2004. Cool place. Wear comfortable shoes, the place is giant and you will walk a lot! Parking in the grass lot next to the speedway was 10.00, and a 3 minute walk to the entrance. TY IN.

Awesome race fan experience

By Peter M |

We did the VIP grounds tour which was excellent. You get to tour the grounds and behind the scenes tour. A lap of the track in the tour bus is included. Knowledgeable tour guides were great

WOW! The History of Auto Racing!

By TJC |

The History of Auto Racing in one place. The cars are incredible and the exhibits make the trip worthwhile! Great experiences for young and old as you get to see it all from the early 1900's to today. If you are a car racing fan then this is the place to go. We spent 3 hours in awe of it all!

Christmas at the track

By Jacob T |

Excellent venue for driving around the speedway. Beautiful lights and lines kept flowing. It was nicely laid out moderately costing. We had the gift shop to ourselves.

A fun stp even for non racing fans

By KassandraB |

I came into the tour and museum with basically zero racing knowledge. I learned quite a bit about the history of racing and particularly the history of the Indy 500. I found it fun and informative and felt that the staff rolled out the red carpet for our group (we were there with the FFA during National Convention week).

Expected MORE . . . . .

By C D M |

Expected more . . . .$175 for a ticket $75 to park is way way way over what you should spend when attending something like this. You get a seat across from pit row and somewhere near the finish line but NO "club" access or other benefits , i was a bit taken back. Food was normal gouging price at ANY sports venue. Just bring hear protection which is NEEDED it is EXTREMELY loud ALL DAY no matter where you sit.
It was a good experience but I won't come again.

Speedway

By BABernier |

Awesome place to visit and enjoy. The Brick Yard is history itself. The town of Speedway is a great place to shop, eat, drink and see the local history of racing in Indy.

Massively Iconic

By f1nut57 |

If you like any auto racing, you must visit Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. The cars, from decades ago and the new stuff are mind boggling. We are talking over a 100 years. Also, when available, they have great tours!!

Really interesting and great informative staff

By gringatx |

We came here for a 9 30 museum time and an 11 am kiss the bricks tour. They were both excellent. The museum staff was so kind and helpful. They were enthusiastic to share info. We actually got to see a car they just brought in this morning and didn't even have the sign up. The lady told us all about it and was very excited.

We did the 30 min kiss the bricks tour. Our team was Jason and I forget the driver's name. They were both older gents and really enthusiastic as well. We rode the track once in the bus going a whopping 22 miles per hour!! Then we got out to the starting line and could walk on the track, take pics, etc. They pointed out things and told stories. Really great employees.

We had a wonderful experience here... much more fun than a regular museum. I definitely recommend this!!

Really…1/2 the museum about Rick Mears?

By Rick W |

The museum was a great place to go when they had many race cars in all areas of the museum. But I took the family to the museum yesterday I was sad to see someone turned 1/2 the museum into a Rick Mears shrine. While Rick was one of the best, there is so much more history to display and none of it was there. 1/2 the museum was all about Rick Mears, and so much other history was lost to the basement that could have been displayed for the public.

I just don’t understand why one driver would get all this floor space and so much other history was lost making room for the Penske driver.

Seems like politics has found its way into the museums history.

Was nice to see the older race cars.

By kakn5465 |

It was a pretty interesting outing. We are not Race Fans but it was still fun to walk around and look at all the facts and pictures. Unfortunately we weren't able to go on the track due to practice racers.

An Indianapolis Staple

By Anna R |

The grounds are huge and impressive. I can’t imagine how busy the place must be on race day. Definitely take the shuttle tour around the track, to get a sense of how huge it all is. Our tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. He also helped us get the most out of the museum when we got back. The museum was packed with all the models of race cars over the years. If you are a gear head, this place is a must-see.

VIP track tour and museum visit

By tchout02 |

Had a great time. Tour guides/docents were fantastic. They went out of their way to show us as much of the track facilities as possible. Museum is small but informative. Partial renovation/reset was on-going in late April so there should’ve more to see shortly. Make sure you talk to the museum guides and ask questions.

Nice museum and decent KISS THE BRICKS tour

By bruce p |

This is a very nice museum in a very old building. They have a ton of cars as you can see in my pictures and a lot of artifacts and stuff from the history of Indy Racing. They have to gift shops inside which have all you could imagine. The kiss the bricks tour was pretty short only about 20 minutes you jump in a shuttle bus and you drive around the track once stopped at the bricks to take your picture and on the shuttle there's a recorded speech that gives you some of the history of the track. It's pretty basic. All the people that work are very nice and friendly. Parking is free. The museum is free if you buy the tour which is $20. Or you can do just the museum for $10. There are no food cafes on site.

Learned a lot and got to kiss the bricks!

By stacie914 |

We had a great time here. We went for my husband to see but everyone ended up enjoying it. The teen liked the simulators and we did the "Kiss the bricks" tour where you were able to go onto the track for pics. The museum was very informative and a lot of great history showcased. We spent about 3 hours there. The gift shop is a little high end with prices.

Had a tour

By Dennis H |

Visited this while in town. The museum was fantastic and very informative. Highly enjoyed it . We then went on a bus tour of the track . Our guide was great . Would highly recommend. Only downfall was the gift shop . The prices are very steep

If you like cars

By journalmytrips |

This museum shows the history of racing at this historic track. I especially enjoyed seeing the first cars that won the race. These had two occupants. One was the driver and one was a mechanic. Also the steering wheel was on the right side instead of the left in later cars. Safety equipment, such as harnesses and roll bars, was introduced later as well. It was interesting to see the change in design and materials.
Be sure to take a break and see the video in a small theater.
Time did not permit us to take the tour...maybe next time.

Great museum for race fans

By 5Kat5 |

If you love the Indy500 then this is the museum for you! Lots to see about the race history. We included the track tour which was also full of fun facts. And yes, you can kiss the bricks!

IMS is Unparalleled in the World

By OpenWheeler |

I may be biased, but no race track on earth compares to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I have attended every Indy 500 since I was born in 1977 except for one. I have also attended every US Grand Prix when Formula 1 was here, every MotoGP race when they raced here, as well as most Brickyard 400’s and other races including the Midget races at the dirt track they built inside the oval last year. No feeling on earth compares to the build up of the prerace and the adrenaline rush at the start of the Indy 500. It is a must see for everyone, especially racing fans. To my family, it feels like entering hallowed ground every time we enter the gates.

Fun!

By Angela L |

I was attending a conference and we got to go here for one of our outings. It was wonderful. And our conference surprised us with everyone getting a lap around the track in the pace car. That was incredible -- got up to almost 120 mph!
We also had dinner here. Food was incredible. Really fun time.

A great experience

By claribelvera |

if you are a lover of celicity and coughing of a speed vehicle you will love it ... it is one of the world-renowned tracks. This museum tells the story with real paraphernalia so you'll love it. the staff is super attentive!

Talk To Larry!

By Nantieau |

Larry was the best part of visit! A former racer himself, Larry has stories. What I found most fascinating was his ability to recall race dates, speeds, records, winners, crashes, engine sizes and horespower throughout the history of racing. He is truly a benifit to your visit. We found him standing in the back room (additional exhibit) area. I learned more from him during our short visit. I wish we could have stayed longer. We arrived around 2pm and the musuem closes at 4pm. Thanks Larry for a great hustory lesson into IndyCar racing. I an truly thankful.
If this review has help you decide to visit this historical racetrack please give it a thumbs up. Thanks, and Happy Vacationing!

Kiss the bricks!

By John L |

Very impressive layout on the history of the race and the track. A "must see" for racling and non-racing fans alike. Don't forget to"kiss the bricks".

Better than I expected

By Dudeinlosgatos |

To be honest, I originally planned on only driving by and taking a look from the exterior. But when I saw how massive it was I was impressed enough to go inside and check out the tour options. I did the track tour with museum. It was very well done for COVID considering it was an open air tram with social distancing. It was a lot of fun to go around the track and to see the finish line area. The museum inside was cool - lots of winning cars from many years and you get to see them up close. A special note of excellence is the staff who works here. Super friendly and helpful. It was clear they had passion for working there.

It's Great if you like cars

By flaneur40 |

If like me you are not a car enthusiast, this place will have less allure, but my friends are car enthusiasts and this is something unique to Indianapolis. You will not get this anywhere else, so I suppose it's a must. It's $10 which to me is overpriced, but it's a diverting hour.

Worth a stop if you’re in the area!

By Mamaroo04 |

I stopped here on the way to Terre Haute for a work trip since I had never been to Indiana before and wanted to do something local/touristy. I’m not into cars, racing etc but did the 30.00 bus tour which was interesting and informative. The 2 tour guides were friendly, helpful and informative.

Loved the history but be careful about tour booking

By CleopatraBunny |

If you like motor sports, then this is a must. You drive in and under the track to park! The museum is open most of the time, but the track can be reserved and closed to tours on a moment's notice (even booking the day before doesn't guarantee it will go the next day). Easy to do in about an hour, with a nice array of Indy car winners and a logical timeline explaining the races, winners and ownership over the past century+. Enjoy the Rick Mears and Granatelli exhibits. Free and plentiful parking.

Better than what I expected

By prettilittlemamma |

The tour bus drivers were very informative. They stopped at the famous bricks and left anyone (who wanted to) get out and take pictures of the original bricks. Some people even got down and kissed the bricks. The tour guide offered to take the picture of the people who were interested in doing so.

Interesting!

By Susette M |

Very conscientious screening for COVID.

Interesting look at motor sports, fantastic memorabilia and film footage. We were disappointed that track tours were not available due to track activity on the day of our visit, but it was exciting to see the driving experience cars on the track.

Holiday lights

By Mary B |

Beautiful place to drive through and see some amazing light displays. This is the second year we've gone and will continue to do so.

Speedway Museum

By Bill F |

Wonderful display of race cars from the beginning of the speedway to the present. Presently they have a special Mario Andretti display in honor of the 50th anniversary of his 1969 win.

Great place for racing fans!

By p00h13 |

My husband and really enjoyed visiting the museum. We were able to look at a lot of the cars from past to present, as well learn about the history of the track. If you are able, by all means take the Full Grounds Tour. It was definitely worth the time and money! You won’t regret taking it.

Racing Capital of the World

By Theresa D |

Very friendly greeter, Steve at the gate let us know where to watch the cars that were on the track today as well as the opening times for the museum. Plenty to learn here about the cars and drivers. Great gift shop with unique mementos of your visit

Family Activity

By Kelly R |

We did a Private Golf Cart tour and our initial guide Scott, I believe was his name was very knowledgeable until we broke off with our second guide Mike who was AMAZING! The Golf Cart Tour, although a bit more in cost than the "Kiss the Bricks" tour, was well worth our money. We got to go into the Pagoda, the Owner's Suite, Media Room, Race Control Room, Victory Podium, Kissed the Bricks, and a lap around the track. It was amazing and a must for anyone who has any interest in either race cars or the Speedway in general. My 13 year old son and 84 year old mother both very much enjoyed the tour as well. I do recommend you call ahead to make a reservation for the Golf Cart Tour. I called on Saturday for a tour on Monday and when we arrived Monday the Golf Cart Tour was sold out. Was a wonderful family experience! The tour itself was right around two hours and then that included a visit to the museum-you can sit in an Indy car inside the musuem. Very awesome experience overall.

My 19th Indy 500

This is my favorite place in the world! We paid 40 bucks for GA ticket, brought our lawn chairs and our own cooler of beer, and had a great time. The prerace ceremony was awesome and the race finish was really exciting.

What a fun experience! The highlight of our visit to Indianapolis!! So much More than just Cars! FUN

Great staff!

By Rescuelance |

My daughters and I went to the speedway and took the kiss the bricks tour. It was informative and they loved driving around the banking and kissing the bricks at the start/finish line. Afterward we were shopping in the store and every single employee was absolutely amazing and so friendly! That Midwest charm shown through 😊😊

Trip to the Brickyard

By Richard S |

Our Indianapolis family members suggested a family trip here. We did the museum and the bus tour round the track and 'kissed the bricks'.

The museum itself is very well laid out with interactive features dispersed with loads of cool cars and history from the track.

A great day out if you're in the area.

Interesting even for non race fans

By rirri |

I had some time after work so I thought I'd visit this most iconic Indianapolis site. It's mostly displays of race cars from throughout the history of the Indy 500. They have the car that won the first race and several examples of cars (not all winners) from the decades since then. It's interesting to see how they've progressed over time. I particularly liked the cut-away modern car that lets you see not only inside the vehicle, but the structures of many of the components. It's not just cars, though, you'll also see example helmets from the race's history as well as tires and trophies. I only had an hour and felt rushed to see it all.

RAINY SPEEDWAY

By S71B69 |

My group and I had a great time visiting the museum & going on the official track to kiss the bricks. Besides being quite rainy it was a fun time.

Wow

By Alayna |

I personally know nothing about racing at all and this museum was still super interesting. It has TONS of information and history along with the actual winning cars themselves. It gave me perspective for the racers by seeing all the photos of the smiling winners and just their emotions. Not to mention it's in the middle of the track itself! Really neat place overall and had a good experience here.

Good stop!

By where2nextfamily |

Took a “behind the scenes tour” and museum tour, got to see some ride along Indy cars doing laps...pretty cool!

Winning Cars Inside

By 2doglady |

The museum is small but nice. They have several of the winning cars on display. Personally, I am not a big Indy 500 fan but I still enjoyed the visit. The short film was informative in the small theater explaining some of the history and traditions of the race. They have a gift shop with shirts, pennants, and some small items as well. The track tour was the highlight and worth the extra cost. When you get your tickets, they tell you which tour bus is the next available. The tour is narrated and informative. The tour stops to let you out for photos at the historical brick line. You can see the museum while waiting for your tour or see it afterwards. With the track tour, an hour and a half is plenty of time here. Recommend thing to do in Indy!

Spanning more than a century of history at the Indianapolis 500

By Taylor B |

You can't go to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway without visiting the museum, which chronicles more than a century of history at the Indianapolis 500. Opened in 1976, the 96,000-square-foot museum and administration building is located on the infield surrounded by the 2.5-mile oval race track. Home to one of the world's premier motor sports and automobile collections with interpretative emphasis on the Indianapolis 500 and its role as an American icon of sporting tradition and innovation, it celebrates more than a century of thrills and the cultural significance of motor racing at the speedway. Start in the Winner's Gallery, where more than 25 Indianapolis 500 winning cars are displayed, including the first winner, the 1911 Marmon Wasp, the 1922 Duesenberg, the 1938 Maserati and the 1948 Watson. The newest exhibit, Second, features six themes--accomplishment, controversy, determination, heartbreak, mechanical and redemption--that tell stories about drivers who finished second in the Indianapolis 500, including Tony Bettenhausen, Eddie Sachs, Dan Gurney, Michael Andretti, Scott Goodyear and Pato O'Ward. The Tradition exhibit tells stories about fans, calls on the radio, drinking the milk, kissing the bricks, tailgating, concerts and the classic song "Back Home Again in Indiana." There is so much more to see...trophies, plaques, helmets, gloves, drivers' suits, photographs, paintings, highlights of the history of the speedway, evolution of the track, special displays dedicated to A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, Rick Mears and Roger Penske, the current owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Open from 9 to 5 daily, be sure to reserve time to browse through the Hall of Fame, which honors 161 drivers, owners, mechanics and contributors who made the Indianapolis 500 what it is today, the Greatest Spectacle in Racing.

Go there

By 64Jag |

Prior to the visit, I never would have thought it would be a highlight of a central US journey. I have watched this race for decades and never realized the sheer size of the facility. A 2.5 mile oval takes up a lot of space. Never had any idea there was a golf course here to include several holes within the oval. The museum has a great collection of vintage and modern cars. The docents are very knowledgeable. The movie was a disappointment. They could do so much better in 4D to capture the sights and sounds of an actual race.
Paid $10 extra for the one lap in a van track tour. Money well spent. You get a feel of the track banking. Walking on the track is an experience. The diamond groove is very deep and coarse. Tires can’t last long on that surface. Seeing the yard wide brick finish while looking down the straight-away - priceless.

The museum is kind of small, but still pretty neat to check out. Lots of cars to check out and if you have questions there are extremely friendly staff nearby to help.

Famous speedway

By Ryan S |

Went to visit this small museum at the track while in Indianapolis. It's out of town a bit, but easy to find and plenty of parking. Only a small museum with cars and race history but interesting even for only casual fans. The racetrack itself is much larger than what I had imagined.

Awesome

By mouladinne |

I have visited the museum and booked the Kiss the Bricks tour! It was a great experience! Our guide was very knowledgeable and entertained with funny facts from all decades. It was great to be able to step into the racing track and get a feel for it. Even more impressive, stand on the very bricks that gave the racing track its name, the brickyard.
The museum itself had lots of cars from all decades as well as racing gear, articles, trophies and a well stocked souvenir shop where one can buy the usual touristy gimmicks but also informative books about the racing history.
All in all, I would recommend this to all racing fans as vintage car lovers

One of America’s Finest Automotive Museums

Fabulous collection of many of America’s most significant racing machines. Curated by experts. Could easily spend a day here.

Checked off my bucket list!

By Tisha A |

As a race fan, this was the highlight of my trip. The museum alone is worth the entrance fee. I purchased the Kiss The Bricks Tour and couldn't have imagined anything better. Best bucket list item I've completed so far!

We got to kiss the bricks!!!

By pat l |

We planned to stop in and see this museum because we were in the area. We didn't know you could take a spin around the track and kiss the bricks! The museum is nice - looks like about all the cars who have ever won the Indy 500 and a bunch of small cars that famous drivers drove before they hit the big time as well.

Craig was our tour guide as we rode around the track. He did a great job when the CD refused to play part of the tour - Craig knew more than a CD could ever know, anyway!

We are NOT big race fans. Just like to see what places are all about when we are nearby and we certainly enjoyed this one. Take the time and stop by if you're in the area. You will need about an hour or two to see everything. The folks who work here are really super nice - ask them questions because they are just waiting to answer.

They have a nice gift shop, too.

Worth a visit

By SeeTheW0rld62 |

This was my first my first visit to the ISM and I enjoyed it. My husband is into cars, I'm not really but it was interesting. We took the behind the scenes tour and I'm glad we did. The guide was great. I learned some history and fun facts about the races.

Gotta do this at the Speedway

By FinGin79 |

I love racing so this was a must-do for my race weekend. I was shuttled from the infield tunnel to the front door of the museum. Admission was $15. The collection of cars and their stories was impressive. All the cars on display were Indy racers and dated back to the early 1900s. The history of the track and its events were presented along one wall. There were also staff members available to answer questions and this was also a break from the heat on a July day.

Very interesting

By Vanessamariappr . |

It’s very interesting! You can see everything related to the Indianapolis 500, all the cars that won the events along the years. For $25 It’s possible to take part on a tour into the circuit, with a stop to photos at the start/finish line, it worths!

Worth it if you are a petrol head at all

By Paul F |

It was a great experience to go onto the track, feel its rubberized surface and see the straights and turns. The museum is great too since they have winners cars since 1912. You can see how racing cars evolved over the last 10+ years.

Kiss the Bricks

By James S |

This was a very enjoyable visit where you can trace the Indy 500 back to its origins. There are many historical exhibits. You can sit in an Indy car for a photo opportunity and take a 30-minute 1 lap tour of the speedway. The tour stops at the finish line where you can get out and "kiss the bricks." The only improvement I would make would be to add a few more NASCAR exhibits commemmorating the annual Brickyard 400.

Speedway

By FellowTraveler246122 |

In unexpected visit to this museum but something not to miss especially the bus tour around the track with such rich history well worth a visit

Go, Its very interesting

By victoria s |

Great, and interesting for someone who is not really into racing. Great gift shop. Several different rooms address various aspects of the Indy 500.

A Great Asset

By HoosierWisdom |

I highly recommend upgrading from the general admission to include the "Kiss the Bricks" bus tour for a lap around the track.

A must visit, even if you're not a race fan

By Brittneydeanne |

We didn't really know anything about racing, but we felt like we were in Indy and had to see it. We visited the museum and then did a behind the scenes tour. The track was rented for a private event, so the tour just took us into some buildings, but we heard interesting stores and saw awesome views of the track from special VIP areas. Our tour guides (I think they were Scott and Jack?) were so great!

50th running

By BorneAppetit |

We visited here a few times! We saw the 50th running of the Indy 500. We saw the Rolling Stones in concert on 4th of July followed by fireworks. And we have driven through the light show at Christmas. We love this place!

Kiss the Bricks!

By Brandon |

This place is great! The staff were all so helpful and knowledgeable. We took the Kiss the Bricks tour and got to ride around the track. We stopped by the famous bricks and got to kiss them ourselves.

Golf cart tour is fantastic!! Book early.

By Pamela T |

Golf cart tour was a huge success for husband and grandson. They went all over the place on a private tour for the tow of them and saw behind the scenes and got to kiss the brick. Book this type of tour in advance by calling and setting it up. Well worth the money if wanting to see it all. Museum tour is on the cost of this tour. So glad I booked this for them. Grandson was elated and had a wonderful time. There is an age requirement for this tour. Check if traveling with children.

Great for the history but not for the technology

By Phillip S |

If you want to see the cars that won the race and how they’ve changed over the years, then this is the place for you. If you want to learn a little more detail about Mario Andretti or get the facts and figures on who won the race, you’ll love your experience. Cars are beautifully preserved and well presented. However, if you want to know a little more about the drivers’ controls, what is shared with the pit crew, what innovations have made the cars faster (Or slower) over the years, you’ll leave pretty empty-handed. So, if you’re a history buff, you’ll be enthralled. If you are a mechanical engineering type who wants to know the “how” behind the scenes, then this museum won’t get you there.

BIG and Great!

By Wayne S |

The speedway has alot for a variety of people, they have the obvious indy 500 and other races, the redbull air race, concerts and sometimes movies and other events. I loved the Snakepit at the Indy500, it's not for everyone but it's alot of fun. I also like watching the races, most recently I've been to the redbull air race which was interesting, I'd probably go back. I recommend the 500 or the snake pit for sure though.

Indy Motor Speedway

By JanLowe876 |

This was the experience of a lifetime. I totally enjoyed the tour and the history about motor speedway. The tour guide was excellent, the only thing that could have topped it was to actually drive in a race

Worth every penny!

By Kansas K |

Took a lap around the track in a small bus. "Kissed the bricks"...the way the Nascar winners do. Toured the pagoda. Gasoline alley. The museum has many of the historic winning cars. If you're anywhere near this place, and don't check it out, you're missing something special.

Thoroughly enjoyed!

By Lisaveta |

Seeing the century old race cars was great! So much history and you can see how the cars design has changed over the years. Not to mention the design (and safety) of the helmets!
We had a great time and a few nice conversations giving us the background of some exhibits. Highly recommend.

Fun tour for race fans.

By Patick C |

We was in town for the FFA National convention and just had to the see speedway. The tour was fun. We got to take a lap around the speedway at a mind blowing 20mhp. lol

The museum was really cool. Lots of history on display to see.

Mario Exhibit

By tlrouse |

Visited during Indy 500 weekend. The exhibit they had for Mario Andretti was cool, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of his win!! Although you can take coolers into the track, you can’t take them into the museum.

Unexpected celebrity sighting

By Wes F |

Just happened to get to the museum as Mario Andretti was wrapping up an interview. He graciously signed autographs before leaving. Also the 2018 winner, Will Power was there giving an interview and got his autograph also. The museum was full of race cars, memorabilia and history.

IMS Golf Cart Tour

By scoll1111 |

My daughter and her husband gave her Father his belated Father’s Day gift. She and her husband took us to IMS for a Golf Cart Tour of the Speedway Race Track. Aiden was our tour guide and we got to see the pit area, the garage area, the inspection area, the Media press room, the Tech room, and more! Sunday was Lexus Day and we saw the future drivers take practice laps to get the feel of the track roads. We also got to go up to the top level of the Pagoda. A surprise thunderstorm passed through the racetrack and we had to wait it out while in the Pagoda and Aiden continued to give us information about everything that goes on before, during, and after the races. We even got our picture taken in the Winner’s Circle! Our tour was supposed to be 90 minutes, because of the Thunderstorm we got an extra 30 minutes. It was one of the best Father’s Day present for her Dad! Aiden received an A++ from us. We would recommend this tour to any car/race fan.

Great history

By wander1 |

This was an ideal spot for a below freezing day in Indianapolis. Admission is modest ($23 for seniors).
It's very well laid out, with several interactive displays and memorabilia. Be that as it may, you're there for the cars. It was fascinating to see the evolution from modified passenger cars to full blown modern Indy cars. The fact that these are real cars (sans engines, I assume) just makes it better.

Sensational History

By Robert C |

We were overwhelmed at the variety and content of what's offered at the museum and track facilities. We were there for a good 6 1/2 hrs.Very impressed with the museum and the track area.Lots and lots of open wheel history. Quite a place and would highly recommend a visit if you are in Indy.

Great museum and tour!

By la_mariquita |

Vehicle enthusiasts and history buffs this is a wonderful museum. The museum is efficiently run & well managed by a courteous team of people. We also opted for the lap around the track “kiss the bricks” tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. Plan for 2-3 hours for the museum & kiss the bricks.

The TEMPLE of AMERICAN RACING

By alex ll |

A must not miss visit while in Indianapolis...Lots of relevant racing history, clearly showing the impact of racing technology on the sport as well as safety.
Many previous 500 winning racecars. Usually there are extensive tours of the complete racing facility. Plenty of free parking or UBER which drops you off directly in front of this hollowed grounds museum. Something for all ages. Go on line to insure best operating hours to serve your needs. Great for Children of all ages

Great place for kids and young teens.

By Edward W |

Fantastic display of 500 history mixed with interactive stations that were fun and repeatable. Absolutely great Gasoline Alley exhibit. Fortunately I was able to wonder through the original wood alley when I was in my 20’s.

A Must See When in INDY.

By Peggy P |

Preteen grand-kids loved the tour and museum. Grandson made a video while on bus and sped it up so it looked like we were going at speed. Bus tour guides told lots of good stories and facts about the track. You even get to kiss the bricks! Tip, check all pockets of the boys as they pick up tire marbles and leave them in the their pockets which do not do well in wash machines. Don't forget to check out the gift shop.

Indy Cars and Drag Racing

By Bruce A. DeCuir |

My wife and I decided to see the Indianapolis Motor Speedway up close when she had a conference to attend in Indianapolis around mid October. Never did I realize how big the Indy track was. My wife, not being a big race fan, was the driving force behind our tour. You see, I'm a Drag Racing fan and round or oval tracks just don't do it for me........until this trip! We took the Kiss The Bricks tour that included touring the entire track (from a bus) and stopping at the start/finish line to take pictures of the bricks and of course "Kiss The Bricks". We toured the museum which had great displays and cars with a chance for me to climb into an Indy car. What a different opinion I have of Indy car racing now. The cars sit so low to the ground and not a lot of room to move around. Now I know what a sardine feels like! While at the museum, I inquired about the track where the U.S. Nationals (or Big Go) was located. The people immediately pointed me in the right direction and off I went. We sat on the parking lot from a distance just looking, figuring the track was closed for the season. A truck approached and we struck up a conversation with a track official. This guy was great because he gave me the tour of a lifetime. The track was closed but this man made my trip to Indiana a trip to talk about for a long time. He let me see the track the way only a Drag Racing fan can get excited for. He was a true ambassador of the track and Indiana who made this old man have an experience he never thought he would ever have. To say the tours of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Lucas Oil Raceway were the tours of a lifetime would be an understatement. It could only be trumped by being there (at both tracks) on race day. Thanks to the people of both facilities for a fantastic trip. Would I go back? In a heartbeat !

Very enjoyable, even for a person who doesn't watch racing!

By joy |

Really appreciated learning about the track as we made a lap in the trolley cart. I found the historical information interesting even though I am not a race fan! So glad we decided to include this stop on our vacation!

Best time ever

By Zedacagle |

We had the best time ever on our visit to the speedway. We took a bus ride our driver was Bill. We learned so much about the history of racing there and the tour was awesome we got to see up close from the tower we could see so much of the track. We got to see and touch the bricks. Awesome place the people are so nice they even helped us with other places to see while on our trip.

A Must See

By trophywest |

Whether you're a racing fan or not, it is interesting to see the advances in racing technology. Race cars from the start of the racing series are there. There are films showing some of the most exciting moments in the Indy race.

Signed up for the "Behind the Scenes" 90 minute tour.

By 70tmdf |

Unique entrance to the 500 complex, you drive under a portion of the track. After wandering around inside the museum for 25 minutes, we boarded the bus out front to get a closer look at the track, etc. Because the Goodyear tire test was using the track, the VIP tour was not available. Worked out well because we got to enjoy the vehicles speeding by and listening to all the noise they make! Mike and Homer were our guides and were very pleasant older gentlemen. Enjoyed them and getting a personal view of the building where all the media space and timing equipment are during events. Included was the winner platform and a great view of the finish line. Being up high on the 6th floor really helped give you a great sense of the enormity and excitement. Museum was probably more of interest to a true race fan than we are. You are free to stay at the museum and view their displays as long as you care to. The trophy was not there though because it is apparently traveling.

What a Renovation !! Loved the Museum !!

By Christina B |

Although I planned our trip up Months ago I did not realize it had been closed. I got lucky. It just reopened on 4/2 after a $60.5 million renovation. They did an amazing job of guiding you through history. 3 floors with so much to see. There’s a kids area as well. I’m not a big race car fan, but know enough to recognize some drivers. Learned so much & was very interesting. We spent 3 hours here. Unfortunately the tours had not restarted yet so we were not able to take one, but would if you have time & they are available again. Highly recommend this location.

Highlighting the Indy 500 and the history of auto racing

By Taylor B |

I have visited the Indianapolis Motor Speedway only once before. I had a seat on the fourth turn, looking down the front stretch to the finish line, and saw Jimmy Clark win the Indianapolis 500 in 1965. The race was significant because it was run without a single accident, not a single yellow flag, only checkered. What amazed me most of all was how swiftly and efficiently all 250,000 spectators were moved in and out of the giant track. I didn't have an opportunity to visit the museum on that occasion. But I made a point of touring the facility on our recent visit to Indianapolis. Located within the famed 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval in suburban Speedway, Indiana, the 37,000-square-foot museum houses one of the world's premier collections of automotive and motor racing vehicles and artifacts. It is linked to the Indianapolis 500 and the Brickyard 400 but also includes exhibits reflecting other forms of motorsports, passenger cars and general automotive history. It also is home to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame. The original museum was established in 1956. This museum opened in 1976. It features 30 Indianapolis 500 winning cars, pace cars, the Borg-Warner Trophy and other trophies and plaques, racing paraphernalia such as helmets, gloves and driver's suits, model cars, photographs, toys and paintings. Displays include highlights of the history of the Speedway's ownership, evolution of the track and other memorabilia. Take a bus tour of the track, a lap around the oval and do what the Indianapolis 500 winners do, kiss the 1909-vintage paving bricks at the finish line. Stroll through Gasoline Alley. Also see a short film of the history of the Indianapolis 500 in the Tony Hulman Theatre. See the 1911 Marmon Wasp, the first Indianapolis 500 winner driven by Ray Harroun, all four of A.J. Foyt's winning cars, the 1965 Spirit of America that set a world land speed record, the 1931 Cummins Diesel driven by Dave Evans, the first car to complete the Indianapolis 500 without a pit stop, the 1977 Bryant Heating & Cooling Lightning/Offy driven by Janet Guthrie, the first female to qualify for the 500 and the 1965 Le Mans winning Ferrari 250 LM. Also see the picture wall featuring the drivers and cars of all Indianapolis 500 winners. Finally, visit the Auto Racing Hall of Fame, which dates to 1952 and highlights 155 inductees from Ray Harroun to Barney Oldfield to Eddie Rickenbacker to Mauri Rose to Fireball Roberts to A.J. Foyt to Mario Andretti to Al and Bobby Unser to Parnelli Jones to Roger Penske. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987.

Fun tour and replica or actual cars in museum

By Vicki L |

Even though we are not fans of racing, per se, we loved this museum and the "Kiss the Bricks" tour. Hard to imagine the place with so many racing fans. Note that the museum will be closing for renovations in Nov. 2023 for a few years.

Wonderful racing history.

By 83154 |

If you have time while visiting Indy, you definitely need to try to visit the 500 Museum. So much racing history and they offer a few different tours.
You can take a ride around the track, kiss the infamous "Yard of Bricks", and go through Gasoline Alley.

Racing

By jontattoo |

What can you say about the Home of Auto Racing the grand daddy of all racing in the USA and the world be sure to check out the 500 racing museum and hall of fame. The mouth of may in indy is a party!!!

100 years of motoring history

By SPJ_3 |

There is a vibe about the place, it is an amazing collection of pristine racing cars and other memorabilia that every race car fan should see, even my wife who isn't particularly a racing fan enjoyed, I call it a highlight of our trip in the US.

Great museum!

By Cortnie C |

We took the “behind the scenes tour” as the track was booked for the day. Our guide was Jason and he was brilliant and knew so much! We continued to the museum which is included in the tour ticket price if you wish and the information is up to date and very easy to read! Gift shop is a bit pricey but most things are from famous places! Highly recommend!

The Indy 500 baby

By K F |

What a great museum. Every generation of Indy cars. Lots of racing memorabilia from the 1900’s all the way up to today. Helpful staff. A little crowded but what do you expect at Indy in the month of May

Good times at the speedway!

By Jeffrey F |

Took the bus tour and saw the museum at the greatest track in the world and it is something you must see!

AWESOME THEATER EXPERIENCE

By mary k |

The museum has a thoughtful layout and interesting displays. It has undergone a recent remodel and now boasts an amazing theater experience that is included in the price of admission.

Fun at the IMS

By Klikes2travel |

I can't say that I'm a car racing fan but I loved seeing all of the old cars that have have won the Indy 500. I was there over the Memorial Day weekend which is when the Indy 500 is held so there was a lot of energy at the museum. Also took the Kiss the Bricks tour which was great because I'm a sucker for any "behind the scenes" tour. I highly recommend that tour. It was a fun afternoon.

Brickyard Lights.

By macymooChicago |

This was a night to remember. More lights than I’ve ever seen in one spot. We drove on the road coarse then to the straight away past the winners circle, brickyard and Santa. We were three generations full of smiles, yippees and ho ho hos.

Indy 500 trip

By ttkt1986 |

The Indy Speedway complex is awesome. Bring your walking shoes. While at this years race we visited the Museum. If you like open wheel racing, this is the place to go. This years was celebrating Mario Andretti's 50th anniversary of his winning the 500. A tremendous amount of information about him and his life was on display.

If you are a race fan... this is a must in Indy

By 2babybluz |

Better than when we were there before. So many things to see. Have been a fan for 50 years and to see stuff and faces from my early race days was so fun. It brought back so many memories. Nice bathrooms, clean, concessions to grab a snack. Just to see the place that so many moments in time have happened!!! I highly recommend.

Auto racing capital!

By RollTideRollAZ |

Great visit even though track was closed to tours. Visited the musuem and checked out all the cars. Tribute to Mario Andretti right now. Stuff for kids too. Ferrari track people on track so watched them go around. Good time!

The Best Speedway

By HNBISOFF |

The Speedway museum was the best. The history, the exhibits and the memorabilia were outstanding. A lot of cars were on exhibit a well.

Wow!

By Ken E |

The museum was awesome! Indy winners (and others) all over the place. This is definitely a place you have to visit. When you're here, you MUST take the "kiss the bricks" tour- it enhances the experience!

Family visit

By Favor2019 |

Enjoyed the visit to the indy motor museum.
Staff was friendly and the souvenir shop staff went out of the way to assist us and make suggestions.
The staff was also available to assist in taking out family photos.

Not a fan

By Texoma Family |

I found it to be boring. The cars are static displays with a sign telling you each car’s significance. Just a viewing museum without much education. I guess if you’re really a big fan, this would be exciting. I wish there would have been more history about the cars to read about. $15 to get in and it’s really not a thrill. The most exciting thing was driving into the parking lot. That was a cool experience.

The History of the Indy 500 is here, in person

By Richard Dowdy |

The museum is packed with memorabilia and changing exhibits. Right now (2019) it's devoted to Mario Andretti, who won his 500-mile race 50 years ago. Lots of race cars and more to see...an institution in Indiana. Don't miss it!

Nice car presentation!

By Douglas M |

We enjoyed visiting the Indy museum. The time line wall Is well presented from 1951 to present day with the winning drivers and their average speed. We saw cars displayed from 1951 to 2016.

Indy car enthusiasts will enjoy... room for improvement to excite the rest of us.

By NoRegretsTravel |

Layout is very ADA friendly.. ramps, location of displays at eye level, brightly lit, and wide passage ways.

Collection of vehicles is well marked. Banners with Driver Bios of the most acclaimed drivers.. and those who were ambassadors for the sport.

The presentation lacked cohesiveness though.. or we missed it... not a clear progression of chronological advances in race cars and racing...

the "Kiss the Bricks" tour saved the day... facts about the track, other uses of the grounds, changes to the racing surface...additions of garages, grandstands... and we did indeed Kiss the Bricks!

Could use an archivist and curators design to upgrade and create fresher presentation.

a Once and Done experience... my husband grew up in Indiana and was a little disappointed our visit.

Fun even for the non race car enthusiast!

By DMHoosier |

I learned so much about racing and the history of the speedway that I didn’t know before. We did the racetrack tour for an extra $20 and it was so very worth it! It was neat to see the race cars by decade and just see the progress in technology over the time period! I would highly recommend this if you are in the area!

My Brett King Designs 2019 Indy 500 Trip

By Bertram W |

We did the VIP tour with Brett King Design Company and it was awesome, what beautiful collectibles from Indy historical races. We took pictures of the trail cars for the Indy 500 races. Take your walking shoes it’s a good walk from the racetrack. Try going to the Media center and going up in the Pagoda, great for getting good pictures of the race. We found out a lot about the history of this speedway. The museum is wonderful and great for kids of all ages. If you can take in a round of golf at the Brickyard Golf Course.

Amazing--even for non-race fans!

By eldosokyjl |

Okay, I don't care about cars at all. Only to drive them.

BUT--this was a great museum and a great tour. My husband, me and my infant son took this tour during a road trip we took to Indiana. We had completely forgotten this was even in Indianapolis.

When we showed up, it wasn't busy at all. We were told we could take a private tour around the track and the buildings. There was a Porsche event happening so we could kind of see that in the distance.

Wow--what a nice tour! It makes a difference when you can tell the staff is passionate about it. The two staff members that took us on the tour was so nice and went at a good pace for us who had a baby in tow.

We loved seeing the track, the special viewing areas for VIPs, the media areas and the garages. They answered all our questions and was so nice.

The museum is pretty cool also. Old formula one cars from past races, videos and gift shops. The tour really was the best part though.

Highly recommend!

Awesome place for families of all ages

By Ned K |

We did the VIP tour and it was very interesting. From taking a lap around the the track, standing on the bricks, going to the Media center and going up in the pagoda we found out a lot about the history of this speedway. The museum is wonderful with lots of race cars on display and lots of memorabilia.

especially interesting for race fans.

By Steven S |

Our group had a guided tour of the museum. The guide seemed very knowledgeable giving us additional information not listed on the displays such as how the practice began of milk endorsements by drivers. There are also staff who can explain the significance of the exhibits. A timeline runs across most of a wall giving the names of the Indianapolis 500 winners from its start in 1911. The original 1911 winning car is displayed next to the 2011 winner emphasizing the significant improvements in cars over a century. A display case displays helmets from over the years. The early helmets look very primitive. In addition to the interior exhibits, I recommend visiting the metal plaques off to the right perhaps 80 feet away as you exit the museum. They picture some of the early race cars. There is a large gift shop with mini race cars, clothing and other items. If you are coming with a group, a guided tour would be worth the extra price

Loved this visit!

By Theresa T |

Excellent Tour and Museum!
We took the bus tour around the track and visited the museum. Everyone was very knowledgeable and friendly. The staff were willing to take photos of anyone who wanted them when the bus stopped at the bricks. Museum had a great collection of racing cars and memorabilia. Great visit!

Great Experience - Take the Racetrack Tour

By John M |

We started with the racetrack tour, which was excellent. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgable. You stop at the finish line for more narrative and pictures. We got to see LPGA golfers that were playing on the same day as our tour. The museum was a great follow-up to the tour. I loved seeing the difference between some of the old 500 cars and newer models. I would plan for 2 to 21/2 hours to see everything. We really enjoyed our visit.

Historic

By Speedbump555 |

We're not race fans, but enjoyed speedway's history. The museum is on the infield-- giving a great view of all the grandstands.

Enjoyed the Kiss the Brick Tour

By Jamie B |

We took the Kiss the Brick tour and in addition to viewing the massiveness of the racetrack, we learned so much about the history of the racetrack and were able to take some fun shots on the raceway. The museum was closed for renovation for our visit, but it did not take away from the opportunity to enjoy the racetrack.

Must do

By 10ringtraveler |

Indianapolis is known for this race, it's a must see while here. Lots of cars on display and a lot of related equipment. Whether or not your a race fan this is well worth the stop

The VIP tour is the best. Yep. I kissed the bricks. Visited winners circle and also the media and control room.

By Don D |

Amazing venue and tour. DO the VIP tour for sure. Roger Penske now owns the IMS. Many upgrades. The VIP tour took us around the track and into places there that you normally could not go. Even got to spend some time in Penske's suite in the Pagoda. Tour guides were excellent. The museum is just as impressive. If you are an RV'er stay at the American Legion Post 500 which is right next door. Ate there and the food was not bad at all. Nice people.

fantastic event, not well managed

By L3958LCdouglasb |

Although we have attended the race several times, we have yet to see better food service and trash collection.
The rest rooms always run out of paper towels before the end of the race.
The event itself is one of a kind, which is why we keep going back.

Great Experience

By IUFAN111 |

Constantly changing displays. Great memories of earlier and current times. Extremely expensive basement tour is a disappointing experience. Make sure to take the bus trip around the track.

Fun to see!

By luvmarriott |

My son and I visited here while in Indianapolis for the day. It was very interesting to see and if you are an Indy enthusiast, then this is a must see! There was a short bus tour around the track that was interesting and allowed us to take some great photos. There was also a really interesting car to get into for a photo. Be careful though and heed the warning. If you have a bad back or have difficulty getting up, then avoid this!

Everyone needs to see at least one Indy 500 before they die!

By Ronald R |

I have been to many races at many, many tracks around the world and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is at the top of the list of tracks to go to. The enormous crowds on Memorial Day weekend are awesome. It is definitely a must see, especially the start of the race when all 33 cars are together as close as they will be the whole race.

A Must See

By kcolton |

Did the kiss the brick tour which includes a lap around the track in a bus or golf cart is golf cart. A stop at the finish line where you can get out and actually kiss the bricks if you would like. It also includes admission to the museum which has tons of history and allows you to sit in an Indy car Is Gary informative and a must see for racing fans

Worth the money and then some

By Mike Kaz |

Bucket list item for sure. I did the "Kiss the Bricks" tour. Got on a mini bus and had an older gentlemen on the bus who was from the museum. Bob Jenkins does a pre recorded voice as you go around the track at 40mph. We got to get out and take photos at the bricks and kiss them just like the drivers do. We hung out at the bricks for a good 15 minutes. Tour ends up back at the museum. The museum had a dirt car theme when I went with dozens of dirt midgets, pavement cars, sprint cars and more plus all the indy/open wheel cars from the 1900s till today. So much history here, so much to see. I did the photo in the car, though as the photographer warmed me, the resolution of the digital copy sucks. There using a DSLR camera but for some reason, their software kills the quality of the photo. They had a bunch of hands on exhibits as well as artifacts. The "gift shop" was massive! Such a cool experience. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Wonderful experience!

We took the Kiss the Bricks Tour and it was fabulous. Unfortunately the VIP and golf cart tours were all sold out. If you want those I would suggest you get there very early. We arrived at 9:20 and they were already out. In spite of that our tour was fabulous! Our guides, Cindy and Debbie, were friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful! When we told Cindi we were from out of town and looking for places to visit, she also was a wealth of information about Indiana and provided tons of info and suggestions

Even though the museum tour is self-guided, the staff was so knowledgeable and helpful. Just ask any question and they are a wealth of information!!! You can tell everyone of the staff love their jobs as well as the Speedway!!

Don’t forget to take your picture in the 2 race cars in the museum! 🏁🏎🏁

A must visit museum for fans of racing!

By Vicki & Dan |

They have so much to look at and learn from that it was a bit overwhelming just walking through the doors to the actual museum. We didn't do any of the extras but we still managed to spend close to four hours looking at everything.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway Tour

By Armelle D |

The tour was awesome! We were able to take a bus out on the track and ride one lap of the track. We got to see and take pictures of the brick finish line! Our tour guides Jason and Gary were very knowledgeable and very entertaining! I would 100% recommend!

Kiss the bricks

By Nicole0223 |

This was a random stop for us while we were visiting Indianapolis but it did not disappoint. We did the track tour and the museum. It was $25 for each adult for both of these which I felt like was a fair price. The track took took a lap around the track and stopped at the start/finish line to visit the brick yard. They stopped and let you get out to kiss the brick. After the tour we walked through the museum. Highlights included getting to sit in two real Indy cars and drive a stimulator. We made it a memorable visit.

Great museum of the Indy 500 though its cars, etc.

By interceptpubs |

We last visited museum 20+ years ago and have always wanted to go back. Had sometime on a Saturday afternoon when we were in town for a social event so ducked out for an hour or so to take a peek. We're glad we did!

In the main gallery is a collection of Indy winning cars from the first in 1911 onward - some 50 or so (we didn't actually count them), but they span the entire history of the development of these amazing machines including those that introduced major innovations, e.g., the introduction of spoilers in the 70s that instantly led to significant jump in lap speed. There are also trophies, including the big one, the Borg-Warner, photos and videos, driver's equipment - suits, helmets, etc., interactive displays, and information panels.

Across the way is another gallery that covers the midgets, sprint cars, etc. that many Indy drivers cut their teeth on early in their careers - some started in quarter-midgets, also covered here as well, when they were just kids. Again there are dozens of examples dating back to the 30s to today.

Another gallery at the back of the museum has even more Indy cars, one modern example sectioned so you can see what it looks like on the inside, another that you can sit in and get your picture taken, etc. - so more hands on (obviously they don't let visitors touch the majority of the cars on display).

Admission for adults to the museum proper is $10 (for another $20, you can take a lap around the track in a bus with a stop at the start/finish line - we didn't have time, but maybe next time). We did visit the gift shop where there are all sorts of souvenirs, clothing, etc. for sale, including a disappointingly small selection of books on the history of the sport.

We are frankly not big race car fanatics, even though we work in the automotive industry (guess maybe we're too close to them), but even we have to admit this is a must see for any visitor to Indianapolis.

Interesting Tour and Museum

By Robert C |

This was interesting. We were hoping for the behind the scenes tour, but that was not available. The Kiss the Bricks tour we took was interesting. We rode on to the track and stopped at the start/finish line with a chance to have our picture taken kissing the bricks. It was awesome looking up into the stands that hold almost 400,000 people.
The museum was interesting, but mostly just more and more of race cars. I would have liked a little more information on the change racers and how the race has changed. The move was more like a trailer and not very informative.
I grew up with the Indianapolis 500 on Memorial Day so this was interesting to visit.

Interesting tour

By Travel_The_World_Jia |

This is a popular place in town. If you like racing, it is worth seeing. The tour guide was decent, but not as extensive as the one in Daytona Speedway. You will be let off the bus and walk on the speedway. If you are not afraid of the germs, you can even kiss the bricks as the past winners did.

Hallowed Ground

By Pam I |

If you know anything about auto racing, this is the home of where history started. Take the VIP Tour and do all the cool behind the scenes stuff, including a lap on the track AND standing on the track to kiss the Brick Yard. As you stand there, you know you're in a very special place. Take the pictures!! The museum has some really great exhibits, currently a tribute to Mario Andretti. Take your time and give it at least 4 hours to enjoy it all.

Great visit museum closing in November until 2024 for refurbishment.
We enjoyed the minibus trip around the circuit very good guide.
Sadly the café next door was not open which was strange but a walk to Speedway Main Street for refreshment is worth it !

A great value

By DBissett |

I love the engineering of these machines and I could have stayed for hours. The tour was very enjoyable and educational, both the host and driver contributed, were friendly and knowledgeable.

Checking out the Track

By Shawnee317 |

Something to really see if you are into racing at all.Can take your kids and watch the cars.Must check out the museum.I would not recommend taking kids the night before the race that is a whole different crowd not kid friendly.

A MUST SEE when in Indy

By Lori N |

Great place to stop while you are in or near Indianapolis. The museum houses not only cars throughout the history of the Indy 500 but also helmets and suits. They have a "Kiss the bricks tour" you can take if the weather is good. It takes you around the 2.5 miles track . It's narrated and lasts maybe 30 minutes. Price was $20 a person which also included the museum admission. The museum itself is self guided. We've been to the race several times but this was our first time to the museum. There's a short video that plays on a loop in the Tony Holman theater to watch. Also they have a gallery with all kinds of art work pertaining to cars and racing.

American Sports Car Ass. Here this week

By AndreaUbok |

We got here at 9 o’clock when they open the gates, paid our admission & went into the museum. It was for rooms filled with race cars over the years and their stats. It was a 20 minute film, Biographies about race car drivers and two cars that we can get into and play around with. We were here for an hour and then went into the two large gift shops.

Not to be missed

By William C. |

Nothing like this..the history it presents is astounding. If you like racing..cars..history..Don't Miss. Has a nice gift shop too. We all loved it.

Great thing to do while in Indianapolis

By slamminsam |

We visited here when passing through from Chicago to Louisville. A little hard to find at first, the entrance is actually under the track.

Staff were really helpful and we went on a track tour, unfortunately we couldn't actually go on the track due to resurfacing, so instead we did the winners podium, press centre, and the brick yard.

The Museum is very cool, you could spend our here.

A bit of history

By stuart w |

If you like cars and history you will love this place! A real step back in time with lots to see and do, real cars and real exhibits with minimal digital recreation so felt like a proper museum. Would recommend

Enjoyed the race!!

By Ryan Wendy R |

We had a fantastic time! We loved the race and were happy to have gotten such fantastic seats! We were impressed by everyone's friendliness and helpfulness.

Learned a lot about racing

By gturay |

Learn a lot about the facility and racing. The bus tour is informative with audio and live talking. Get ride on the track at 30 mph and the museum has a lot of great cars

Brilliant tour & museum. Great value for money.

By Clare O |

I'm not a car fan and definitely not a cat racing fan but who hasn't heard of the Indy 500. Knowing it's on in a months time and I wouldn't be able to go we went randomly today for a visit. Wow what a tour and museum! For $25 we had a very informative bus tour of the entire circuit and were able to get out & "kiss the brick". Our guide was super informative and was available to take whatever photos we wanted. After the circuit tour we went into the museum. The museum is fun and interactive. Everyone was so lovely and helpful. It was hands down one of the best tours I've done in a long time. And all for such a great price. If you are in Indiana and close to Indianapolis, you cannot miss this tour! Well done Indy speedway. I'd love to come back race day. Maybe some year I will.

NICE Car Museum

By Pamela R |

We stopped here just to get out of the house for a day/night. Drove from Michigan.
Nice small Race Car Museum. Was surprised how small it actually was though. But worth the $ and really cool it is in the middle of the Indy 500 track. My 13 year really liked looking at all the cars, especially the older ones. If you are into cars and history, this is a good stop.

If you love cars, this is a must see!!!

By Tom G |

This was my absolute favorite experience in Indy. We came here for a "Kiss The Bricks" Tour, then explored the IMS Museum. I was like a kid in a candy store, reveling in the speed and horsepower that was in front of my eyes. The simulator was fun to "drive" and the old show car begs to be sat in just to get the claustrophobic feeling that the drivers live in during the races. The entire staff was friendly and knowledgeable but in the end however, the cars are just simply amazing to lust over.

Kiss the Bricks

By BostonGal007 |

This museum is a delicious bite of Americana. The cars and history they house are incomparable. If you have a spare couple hours in Indy, go! We did the Kiss the Bricks tour and thoughly enjoyed seeing the track, walking on the track and kissing the bricks like so many winners of the Indy 500 have.

Kiss the bricks bus tour and museum.

By Daniel B |

Well worth the trip. Do the bus tour, it takes you around the track and stops at the finish line and you can get out and kiss the bricks.

Fascinating whether you like racing or not

By It'sAnAdventure |

Whether you like racing or not, I'd recommend thus visit to anyone. A visit to the museum has 2 distinct features. First, it is a walk back in time, seeing how automobiles and the auto industry have evolved with world events as the backdrop. Second, you really must take the riding your around the track just to appreciate the sheer size of this racing venue. It is hard to imagine without experiencing it first hand.

Unique stop

Great history and everything looks new and shiney even the items from 100 years ago. Fun for kids and adults. Whether you know a lot about motor sports or not.

This is a great place to travel through race car time warp

By culaugh2012 |

I loved this place...cars displayed beautifully with dates and trivia from each...clean and fun. You can travel through time with the picture read walls and even get in a race car. There are many on sight people to answer questions or add to your enjoyment of the history...Just a must see

Two Non-Race fans enjoyed our visit

By Tribe93 |

We took the kiss the bricks tour of the speedway along with museum entrance. The museum features a lot of the race cars that have won the race through the years. If you're an Indy Car fan, you will love this place. We aren't fans but appreciate the history of the sport and enjoyed our visit.

Great Museum for Indy Cars

Visited Museum during GT American Race. Great display on Indy Cars and the history of the race track. Was surprised no NASCAR vehicles since they have been running at the track since 1994.

INDY 500

If you like open wheel racing, this is the place to be in May. Tickets for the best seats are expensive, especially for the Handicap seating. Prepare for a long day.

Great place to visit !

Well Worth the price of the tour! .. our guide for our bus tour was very knowledgeable and friendly , we learned a lot about the history of the Speedway along with seeing the inside of the track. The home of speedway racing is worth a trip. Very interesting museum which takes you through the history of oval racing and comes highly recommended. Enough there to interest even the non motor racing fans

A Ferrari stand was present. Parking was free. There were trials

Unfortunately it is closed until April 2025. We arrived on September 15, 2024.... There were no races either but we stayed and watched the practice. It was hot so good morning anyway

Sverski

By Sverski |

A truly world-class facility in every way. You can take a tour ride around the racetrack on the actual racing surface and they have two well-equipped gift shops on either side of the museum. The museum as a repository for many hundreds of iconic pieces the history of Motorsports, organized in a very user-friendly fashion. A movie theater plays videos half past races and there are sections that are change periodically to showcase a person or a time in Motorsports.

Nice Tour

By JoeBenevides |

They have a lot of the old winning cars on display and for a little bit extra a tour van will drive you around the track and let you off at the bricks near the starting gate, all while narrated by a friendly tour guide.

IMS Museum - Hoosier Thunder

By Amy K |

If you are an auto racing fan, make sure you take in the IMS Museum. Plenty of Indy 500 history and cars to view. And currently they have a display called "Hoosier Thunder, Indiana's Short Track Heritage". You get view up close short track open wheel midget, sprint and silver crown cars, plus read about legendary drivers. Highly recommended for short track racing fans. Hoosier Thunder is on display until April 21st, 2019.

At the track

By Evsharley |

Great smaller museum many of the great racecars of the Indy 500.Many pieces of memorabilia from early and modern racing.Have been there a few times discover new things every time!

Worth a visit even for non-racing fans

By dr_j_now |

Neither my wife nor I are racing fans, but we still enjoyed our visit here. Inside the museum are numerous historical (and modern) cars that have won races at the Indy Speedway from its conception to present day. It's very interesting to see how the cars have evolved over that time. We did the bus tour around the track as well and it was neat to go around the track, hear about its history, and then step foot on the track, even though we aren't racing fans ourselves. If you're in the area definitely take a little while and stop by.

Great Updated Museum

By Travel Pros |

We visited the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum to check out the renovations. The museum is completely updated with a fantastic trip through the speedways history. The new layout has you walk down a recreation of the old garage area with a number of historic cars. You come into a scene as the race is about to begin with the opening ceremonies occurring all around you. This area is great to get pictures with an indycar as the have 3 cars on display. After the presentation you are into an area with cars displayed. the top floor has race memorabilia throughout the years. The lower floor features NASCAR and the five time winners of the 500. There is also a hands on section that allows you to drive a race simulator and try changing tires. The new format was very well done. They have a behind the scenes tour and a track tour to the yard of bricks on the start finish line. This was unavailable because the track was in use while we were there. There is of course a gift shop upon exit. The renovations are outstanding and we really enjoyed our visit.

An Exquisite Museum to Indy Racing as well as an Amazing Tour of the Speedway

By Tiran A |

I purchased the ticket for the kiss the bricks tour of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which included the museum in the price. The tour included a ride around the speedway in a small bus, with great informative speakers. We were able to get out and kiss the bricks (a tradition of the winner of the Indy 500) and have our pictures taken by a photographer. After touring the speedway, you are left back at the museum which showcases nearly every winning race car that has been involved in the Indianapolis 500 since the early 1900s and the staff is extremely helpful in understanding the rich history of the racing sport. Be sure to take time to listen to the short film they have on site to gain appreciation for the sport. This is especially true if you, like me, am not a follower of the sport.

Not Worth the Time or Money

By Horsiedad |

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum is old and dated. Compared to most any other museum in the US, this one is decades behind -- stuck in the '80s. Very low tech and uninspired. They have a half-decent collection of old race cars, but the descriptions are limited. Conspicuously missing is a current-generation Indy car. You would think that since Roger Penske bought the Indianapolis Speedway a few years ago, they could find a newer car to display.

Start your engines and come see the INDY Motor speedway Museum!

By Tia B |

Visited this museum on my trip to Indianapolis. The museum is impressive and has been recently renovated. It has displays of the cars that have participated in the Indy 500 and other races since its conception. There is a section of the beginning of the race track , a short movie that gives you a chance to experience what race day is like, a interactive kids section , NASCAR car section, room with helmets , uniforms , etc. There is a section dedicated to the 4 drivers who have won 4 times which contains a section dedicated to each of the drivers. You can even kiss the fake bricks!{ I did not}
The museum has a large but expensive gift shop. Staff were friendly . There is plenty of parking which is free. The museum is located at the Speedway.
I would recommend it to any race car fan. If you have a little girl unfortunately the museum is really one for boys and men. Hope to come back someday and tour the actual racetrack which unfortunately being prepped for an event the day we toured the museum.

A must see experience

By Gerryp84 |

I'm not really a race fan but when in Rome, do as the Romans and when in Indianapolis, go to the Speedway. The museum itself is quite cool. They have many of the first and second place cars in the museum. We raced each other on the race simulators. We got in an Indy car. We saw the $3 million trophy. Of course we had to get the upgraded package and take a lap around the track. This is only $10 additional from what the museum entrance fee is and this is a must while here. You get in a bus and take a lap around the track. Our driver was Gary and I think our guide was Mike. Mike was unbelievably knowledgeable about the history there and I learned many interesting facts. You stop at the finish line and can get out and kiss the bricks which was a cool experience. It's really cool to just be standing there on the track and looking around too. It's quite an impressive place with a lot of history. This is a must see if you are anywhere near Indianapolis, race fan or not.

If you like motorsports

By ILikeCustoms |

If you enjoy Motorsports, then the Indianapolis Speedway Museum is a must-see. Also enjoy the trip around the track while you are there. So much history and so much fun!

Surprised by how awesome this was. Tons of cars, history, memorabilia, and the tour of the Pagoda, facility and ride on the track was great! I kissed the bricks! I must return and allow more time.

Great Racing Museum

By Michael_Alwardt |

We spent a couple of hours in the museum as well as taking the "Kiss The Bricks" tour. It was a great time. The had the tours closed the next couple of days for some track testing and we came back and watched some test runs on the road course from the mounds in the infield. NO CHARGE! It was a blast and we highly recommend this to anyone interested in motorsports or indy car racing.

Don't miss this museum!

By Sue B |

I don't know a lot about the Indy 500 but this museum made it worth the trip. Saw many cars from the actual race and nice writes up to guide you through the years. The docents were great as well. A must see if you are coming to town.

Indpls Motor Speedway

By Randy T |

We had a field trip here this week, and the race cars were busy practicing their racing around the track. There is nothing like this that I know of, and definitely something for your bucket list if you have never been. Of course, since this is still mid-May, I’m sure it doesn’t compare to being there closer to Race Day, but even going to a Practice Day is time well-spent. One downside for me was the noise, which is both deafening and exhilarating at the same time. My ears are still ringing. When the cars go by you can’t even hear the person next to you yelling at you. But all in all, this is something you have to experience to appreciate.

A must see experience in Indianapolis!

By Joe Hale |

Indianapolis is known for the Indianapolis 500 and this Museum doesn't disappoint. Imaginatively tells the stories of the Indy 500 - the epic drama of the race and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Synonymous with Indianapolis!

By Peg W |

Indianapolis has many draws but none quite so world famous as the Indianapolis 500. There are advantages to coming off season including easier access to the museum and an opportunity for a bus ride around the 2 1/2 mile track. Come the first Saturday in May to run the IndyMini 1/2 marathon; in December to see the holiday lights; and other opportunities to walk the track with your favorite canine! But nothing beats the actual event Memorial Day weekend. Attend the parade on Saturday, too, where you are just feet away from the drivers - really fun!! Age appropriate Month of May visits - practice and time trials for the young - the race for teens and older.

Overpriced but fun

By Hunter Pearson |

It was fun. Got to do the brickyard tour. Made it fun, got to kiss the brick and take a bus around the track. they have a simulator and vyou could take a photo in a race car in The back of the museum but it was $ 1 and the simulator was $ 5 for 3 laps, considering it's just a video game with a steering wheel kinda overpriced. The museum's self was average but the brickyard tour madeit 10 times better. But is was $ 20 A person. Not for someone on a budget. But overall pretty cool.

Something different

By Lys_Foodie |

My first time in Indianapolis. Couldn’t leave without visiting the speedway. I learned a lot. I have to admit that I really don’t know much about racing. For $10 you can tour the museum, take pictures inside a race car and also by the trophy, watch a short film and see the special exhibit of Mario Andretti.

Overjoyed

By sosousme |

Just 5 weeks after the 1955 Indy 500, I got to see and sit in the John Zink Special - that year’s winner. I cherish that memory and the photo taken of me at five years old with the car. Now I approach 70 years, and finally came to the museum to revisit that car. The staff was amazing. I told them about the above. They arranged for a personal photo op. Many staff members made a point of asking if we got “the picture” and told us stories of the car and the people surrounding it. Everyone was so accommodating snd informative. This was on my bucket list. Do yourself a favor and put it on yours. It is a beautiful museum filled with lovingly cared for automotive history. And be sure to take the bus tour as well. It was truly a magic moment to stand on the finish line and take in the view down the track. Little known fact: there were ballon races at Indy. And they have even more interesting facts to share. The only thing left unanswered is why it took me so long to come to the Brickyard and its wonderful museum.

Enjoy the history of "The Greatest Spectacle In Racing."

By Taylor B |

I wasn't among the 300,000 people who witnessed this year's Indianapolis 500. I saw Jimmy Clark win in 1965. Instead, I watched this year's dramatic finish on TV. A few weeks ago, however, I visited the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum for the first time. Located in the infield of the 2.5-mile oval, at the south end, it was established in 1956. But the current building, a two-story white structure made of Wyoming quartz that covers 96,000 square feet, opened in 1976 as the home of one of the world's premier motorsports and automotive collections with interpretive emphasis on the Indianapolis 500 and its role as an American icon of sporting tradition and innovation. It celebrates more than a century of the innovation, thrill and cultural significance of motor racing at the speedway. It is linked to the Indianapolis 55 and the Brickyard 400 but also includes exhibits reflecting other forms of motorsports, passenger cars and general automotive history. There is a display of 75 cars, including over 30 Indianapolis 500 cars. See Ray Harroun's 1911 Marmon Wasp, the first Indianapolis 500 winner, A.J. Foyt's four winning cars and the 1965 Spirit of America, the land speed record car. Other must-see exhibits are the Hall of Fame, which dates to 1952 and features 159 inductees from J.C. Agajanian to John Zink, Fred Agabashian to Howdy Wilcox, Mario Andretti to Bobby Unser and Sid Collins to Roger Penske, and the Indiana Motor Speedway radio network with its antique radio equipment.

Great historic collection

Every time you go there is something different. I've been in the museum more than a dozen times over the last five years and every time I go, I see something different. I also see some of the interesting things from previous visits.

Very Interesting Even If Not A Racing Fan

By russcox |

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the museum. We enjoyed seeing all the Indy racing cars that showed the history and advancement of speed racing. It was also fun to learn about various drivers. The highlight was taking a tour of the actual race track. This is a must. You go into the tower where the race is broadcast, VIP seating, tracked, as well as other spots. The only unfortunate thing on our tour was they were resurfacing part of the track, so we didn't get to actually go on the track. If you are in Indy, don't miss visiting this famous race track

We DID made it to visit

We DID made it to visit it. All of us really enjoyed it so much. No boring! Now we still are goo memories. Worth to visit it. Period!

Disappointing, unable to make trip

By Chris L |

Attempted to purchase museum and golf cart tour tickets on line, I live 2 hours away. Tickets could be purchased but unable to schedule the tour. My lady and I reached out via their listed email and telephone. Call back was requested. Waited 3 days, did not get a response to the emails or phone calls. Very disappointing.

Was expecting more

By Trevor P |

Lots of history to be seen. The exhibits change, sadly there weren't a lot of cars to see on my visit. Give yourself a bit more time to see the basement tour as well, that says they need another hour typically.

Always Incredible

By DOB508 |

OK, I love car racing. But an interesting thought struck me this time as I drove under the track and into the Indy Speedway. You are standing in place devoted solely to bravery and speed. Looking out at the track, it reminded me as a modern day version of Ancient Rome's Circus Maximus-where Chariot drivers risked their lives on an oval track for speed and glory. Inside the Museum, the history theme continues. Speedway vehicles, trophies and significant memorabilia. Famous cars from 100 years ago to the most modern-which all competed on the same track. Sensory overload-you have to sit and rest your mind to comprehend it all. Surprised to see there's lots for children to do here; coloring, a real race car to sit in, and other engaging displays. You can take a van tour of the track itself with a knowledgeable guide. Will tourists be visiting this site in 2000 years, like we do now with the Circus Maximus? Who knows. But if you like cars or want to see something larger than life, try this.

Race to see this iconic track!

By Scott |

Thanks to having some time on my business trip to Indy our group had time to visit the IMS. It’s much bigger and impactful in person!! The museum of past race winner cars, the behind the scenes tour and staff were all worth our time. I annually watch the Indy 500 but now with a better understanding of reality and history.

For the car guy

By Davin D |

This is a great place for a car guy or gal. There is so much auto history there it’s basically a must see for the area.

If you love seeing Indy cars, this place is for you! If you want to know the history of the sport, not so much. :(

By Jay M |

Just pulling up to the museum in the middle of the oval is worth the drive to Indy. A little hard to find at the moment due to construction but hopefully it wraps up in 2019.

This was our first stop in Indy after driving down from Chicago. As a museumophile, I was really looking forward to this museum. While the cars are the main attraction, the dueling gift shops seem to be in competition with the collection.

I have to say it was a little disappointing for the price of admission. If you don't know about Indy car racing or race cars in general but would like to, this museum will not really increase your knowledge of the sport. My daughter even noticed this and she was the least interested in going here.

They could really use some exhibits labels and large signage answering the 5Ws and 1H. You don't really get a sense of place or perspective from the exhibits. Just a lot of really cool historic and modern cars without much context if you don't know about Indy car racing and why this oval is in the Hoosier State.

The exhibit on Mario Andretti was excellent and showed the museum curator has the means to explain the drivers, pit crew, cars, and competition to gear heads and the general public.

There was a simulator in one room along with an Indy car for pictures but you would be better off with a Playstation or Xbox. $5.00 for 2 minutes of an automatic tranny simulator. Also, $5.00 to take a picture with your own camera/cell phone in the Indy car. I asked one of the docents about an engine and he had to get back to me. While not a big deal, you would think the museum staff would be almost all gear heads outside of the gift shop or visitor's desk. Really strange.

The museum staff should put the same sweat equity into the museum itself as they do the two outstanding gift shops.

If you haven’t been to the Indy 509 you have to go at least once. I personally like to go early and get set up in the infield. There are definitely sites at the race, but it’s great to be part of it. Be sure to bring a cooler with plenty of water and any kind of drink of your choice. No glass.

Surprised at how interesting it was

Not crowded when we were there. Friendly and very knowledgeable staff. We are not racing fans but found the cars on display very interesting. We passed on the optional trip around the racetrack but would probably do that if we had to do it over again.

Well worth a visit

We visited the museum and returned in the evening to see the Lights at the Brickyard. Although not car enthusiasts the museum was interesting and we enjoyed our visit. The lights were great and very well worth it, especially as you actually drive through the finish line and Gasoline Alley.

Teen boy loved it

We had a great time with friends looking at the Indy cars and actually getting to ride on the racetrack. Plus I didn’t know that they do Christmas lights around the track! That is just fun no matter whether you are a gear head or not!

Very impressive in person!!

Came to the area for the weekend and visiting the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was definitely on top of the list. While I remember watching the Brickyard 400 and Indianapolis 500 on TV it's quite apparent how massive the track is driving up to it. The museum is nice and had plenty of cars on display (currently under renovations but tours are running). The track tour is definitely worth it as you get to ride the entire circuit plus get out by the home stretch and kiss the bricks/walk on them. Definitely a must stop even if you're not necessarily a racing fan!!

The most AWESOME PLACE in the WORLD, is IMS!

SO MUCH OF A Over load of the senses is the INDY 500. Don't just go on race day. Go early in may and watch the practice, you can observe all the teams scramble for SPEED through the cold start of the month till the end of the Month when the temps go up wiyh the SPEED!!

A time of mourning.

My oldest son Jay took me on a 4000 mile trip to help me in a very bad time in my life. Two of my highlights were the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green Kentucky and the Indianapolis Indiana Racetrack. To see these wonderful sites and to be able to enjoy it with one of my kids was so great. Jack

We really enjoyed looking at all of the race cars they had on display. Some were from the early 1900's! The people working there were very friendly!
