We visited in July 2020 and they did a terrific job transporting us across the way. The trip was fun and interesting all while riding in your car.

I didn't know what to expect and thought we were late getting to the 3:00 trip. It was so easy getting aboard. No issues. Great experience.

The ride on the ferry was a welcomed break after driving for quite some time. It was a great experience for the kids and much better than the alternative route. It's also convenient to Jamestown Settlement and the beautiful/peaceful beach on the James River. That is definitely work stopping by to enjoy, we took a nice walk down there.

After a day of sightseeing, we decided to take the long, scenic way home. My friend and her kids had never been on a boat and it was a glorious, sunny day, so a ride on the ferry was a no-brainer. As we pulled into the line of vehicles waiting on the bridge, the boys jumped from the car to see how many were ahead of us, “ Oh no, there have to be 25 ahead of us! It’s gonna take us an hour, at least!” But, as the arriving ferry (there are actually 4 of them) unloaded, a stream of over 40 vehicles slowly drove past and we were quickly waved into place. As the ferry slowly pulled out from the dock, I convinced the boys to climb out and watch at the rails......and then had to order them back into the car when we arrived. It was a brand new experience for them and they absolutely LOVED it! (AND IT WAS FREE!) They especially liked the sensation of the car moving on the ferry as the ferry pulled away from the dock. In this day when kids’ heads seem to stay buried in their video games, it was a pleasure to watch their simple joy in this 20- minute experience!

We took the car ferry from Jamestown across the James River to Surry County and back about an hour later. It was very easy and we had a fairly short wait to get on both times. Best of all, it was free!

We accidentally ended up catching this ferry, having taken a wrong turning, but we really enjoyed the journey over the water and the return journey, although we didn't find much to see on the other side. We drove for a few miles, looking for somewhere to stop for coffee and a snack, but turned back when we didn't find anywhere, but it was still worth the ferry trip!

We came to VA from NJ by way of the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. We stayed here to see the Jamestowne settlement. While we were there we watched these ferries crisscrossing the James River. When it was time to go home to North Carolina we were overjoyed our GPS had us using the ferry. The best part is you get a great unobstructed view of the settlement as you cross the river. The ferry is also free. The ride is about 10 minutes long. It took us about 20 minutes waiting in line before we could get on due to traffic. However, the ferries are fast-paced and run continuously.

We had an hour or so to spare after visiting historic Jamestown, so took the trip on this free ferry. No problem on the outward journey but horrible queues (lines) on the way back. We had to wait for the second ferry to be able to board - so exercise caution if time is tight!

We used the ferry several times as we stayed across the river from Jamestown and Williamsburg. The schedule is followed in a timely manner. The staff was accommodating. The ride, especially in the day, was enjoyable.

Part of the fun traveling from NC is the ferry into Williamsburg. This year we also spent a day traveling back across the James River for a day outing to Williamsburg. Great fun!

Great service, handle difficult load levels very well! Gentlemen on the boat were very professional and courteous.

Wonderful short ride across the James River. Great chance to look out over the river and view wildlife, Jamestown and surrounding area.

The GPS said board the ferry in 2 miles and we looked at each other; mouth open. The crews are friendly and interested in the travelers. Now that we know it's tere we'll always go that way.

When you are feeling blue just go for a ferry ride. Great view of Jamestown Island, water, bird life and just the wind in your face. Lovely amenity to living near Jamestown. Take the ferry to Surry and step back into time to a slower pace and some untouched southern landscapes.

Very easy to load & unload. Can get out of your vehicle & walk around on the ferry, including going to the top. Is open 24/7. They told us after 8pm, it runs on the hour. Free & lots of fun things to see once you cross from Jamestown. Enjoy!

Last time we crossed the river using the ferry we were able to get out and get some fresh air. Everyone had to stay in their cars. Just seemed long and pointless. On the way home we went through Smithfield and on to Newport News, skipping the return ride on the ferry. We decided then we would always cross that way even if it seems out of the way.

This is a short ferry ride and the scenery is great. The ride takes less than 30 minutes and always seems to run on schedule.

You can stay in your car or get out and walk around. It's free ride on the water. What isn't there to like???? It's a quick trip- about 15 minutes and you can turn around once you get off and get back on or visit the quaint little town of Surry.

A free boat ferry. YES They normally have plenty of ferries running except later at night. Love the fact they have restrooms on board.

We were traveling from NC to Williamsburg and our gps took us to rt 31 and we were very surprised to go to the end of the road at south side of the James River. Took us few seconds to realize we are going to take this free ferry for the first time. Passing the security check drove on to the deck of the ferry and really enjoyed the trip on the river.

Football is over and your team won. Don't want to stay in the hotel room but where to go? Take the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry. This "Free" trip across the James River was a great fun bonus. You can turn around and make a round trip out of it or we traveled through Smithfield, Va and back to Williamsburg.

Great way to get to Jamestown / Williamsburg. Everything was easy. Easy on - easy off, and the ride across was safe and fun - it was windy which made for an interesting ride.

We took the ferry from Jamestown and ate dinner in Smithfield Virginia, which is a very cute town. Getting out on the water was nice. You get a nice view of Jamestown as you’re crossing the river.

It was relaxing to take a short ferry ride to Jamestown. The route does require you to take some back country roads. However, there is very little traffic on those roads.

If you are visiting the Historic Triangle area, and would like to take a ride on the James River, but do not want to spend a lot of money, this is for you. This ferry operates every day crossing at Jamestown to Scotland in Surrey County. It takes about 20 minutes. While most people stay in their cars, it is nice to go and stand at the rail and watch the birds and look at the scenery. When visiting Williamsburg, we always make sure that we ride the ferry several times. Last week, there was an Osprey nest right next to the Jamestown docking area, and it was about at eye level with the ferry. When you get to the other side, you can visit Smithfield, a charming town just a short distance away.

This is a quicker way to get to Williamsburg and it's fun. How often can you put your car on a ferry and it doesn't cost a penny. The loading and unloading is quick and simple.

This is a free ferry that you drive your car on and off of. We took it from Jamestown across to Scotland, VA. ( Near Surry) It's just cool. It's been about 20 years since my last ride and it brought back great memories.

My wife and I visit Williamsburg traveling from Eastern NC. We prefer taking 17, 13, 460 and 31 routes to avoid the horrendous traffic in the Hampton Roads area of VA.
I highly recommend this ferry!

We decided to take the scenic route home and we took the ferry. It's free and about a 15-20 minute ride. It was a lot of fun and a nice peaceful trip home.

This is a great way to get from Williamsburg to the Suffolk/Surrey/Smithfield side of town.
I've twice ridden this ferry and found it to be prompt and well-run. It runs every half hour during the day and every hour from about 9pm on into the wee morning hours.
Staff are friendly and it is a beautiful 25 minute ride across the water on a lovely day.

Quick ride, can be busy during the summer months so plan accordingly. Be willing to explore the area to wait for a slower time period.

Good way to cross the James, and good route from Williamsburg to Smithfield .
Feed the seagulls and enjoy the fresh air.

Pleasantly good ride. Drive your car onboard, get out and enjoy the calm transport. Go to the upper deck to view the shore lines.

Drive your car on, shut off the engine and get out. Enjoy the views as you take this short ride across the river. Great finds on either side.

My family lives on the Southside of the James River in Isle of Wight County. Though it is quicker to get to Williamsburg via 64W, I frequently take the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry instead because it is just so scenic and pleasant! Nothing beautiful about the ferry itself but it is a nice way to travel with absolutely no traffic. And it you're planning an outing in Jamestown, it lets you off right there!
Runs frequently. Avoid in bad weather.

When you are in or near Williamsburg it's a must do. A beautiful ride across the James River to Scotland. 15 to 20 minutes of lovely views and chugging along the water is very calming. The whole family enjoyed the trip into town and then the trip back on the Ferry... Nice crew and good weather make this a fun day.

We visit the Historic Triangle multiple times each year from North Carolina. We have discovered that the ferry saves nearly an hour of drive time and we don't have to deal with Richmond traffic. It is such a part of our routine when we visit that my daughter, who is 3, refers to it as "the boat we ride to see Pochahontas' house," because you can see Historic Jamestown on the ride.

Something fun to do just for a free adventure. Loading is usually pretty quick and it's fun just to get out of your car and enjoy the river ride. Really nice at sunset, and some great photo shots. You can turn around and cross back across with little wait if not really busy.

We had no idea about this ferry and it was an amazing find. Also the ferry is free so what can be better. Amazing views of the James River. I recommend going from Scotland to Jamestown that way when you get to Jamestown you can head over to the visitor center and settlement and make a day out of it.

The ferry system has two boats on a regular schedule. If your traveling from anywhere near Richmond to the Williamsburg area, it is worth a little extra time to get there to avoid highway traffic. The wait time at the dock and the actual ride was 35 minutes at most. You can see good views of the nearby historic jamestowne park.

We now live in North Carolina, and when coming up to visit friends and family, we always take the ferry! It's quick, it's free, and it's fun! Even our dog likes it. As avid birders, there is now a huge osprey nest on the Surry side dock!

It’s amazing how the simple things can be so great! When we go to Williamsburg from NC, taking the back roads to here can be a pain. But I never regret it. The Ferry is free, is seem-less, and its nice to get out and walk with a kid. My daughter loved it and it didn’t cost a dime.

It's a ferry. It's free. It's a nice ride. Not sure how much more there is to it.
It is fun to hop out of the car and enjoy the scenery. And kids can feed the birds at the back of the boat, so feel free to bring snacks to share with the birds.

The free ferry is fast, efficient, and well run. Enjoyed riding it while visiting the area. Nice scenery from the upper deck. Clean restroom.

This little ferry takes you and your car across the James River so you can save yourself an hour's driving around in other peninsulas. The ferry is great, it runs 365/24/7 and is free. The crossing takes less than 15 minutes, as the river is like glass. No fuss, no harassment, no need to get out fo your car even unless you want to feed the gulls (permitted at the back of the boat). Highly recommend it.

Such a great quiet trip. While the ferry does fill up, we were able to get on with no extra wait on each trip (1 each way) . Both my 12 year old and 1 year old enjoyed this little break.

We took the free ferry over to Isle of Wight and it was such a smooth, quick ride. It was our first time and we really enjoyed the ride and the efficiency of the staff. We will gladly do this again.

This is very well done and just right to cross over and back. Enjoyed going on the ferry! Easy to get on and off the ferry.

The car ferry ride across the James River is a great shortcut. You may remain in your car, or get out to see the view more clearly. We usually have arrived during non-peak times, so we haven't experienced a rush hour. Highly recommend driving away from the busy highways around Richmond and crossing the river on the ferry!

Depending on when you get to the bridge you could have a short wait and trip to a much linger wait. This was my first time being on a ferry and it was a great experience. My only complaint is the trip from Jamestown takes to Surry and there is literally nothing over in that area so you either have to drive forever and go back through the tunnels or ride the ferry back. As far as being on the ferry I enjoyed the ride.

What truly lovely - quick - and unique way to get to Jamestown/Williamsburg from North Carolina. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

We hadn’t taken the ferry in a very long time and decided to hop on it yesterday, when the front was pushing thru and the temperature dropped from 80 degrees to 70 degrees in a matter of minutes and the sky was slate gray. There couldn’t have been more than 30 cars. It was an extremely relaxing ride to the other side even with the wind whipping all around and the steady drizzle. Well worth it.

My girls absolutely loved this! They loved the name (Pocohontas). They were scared to get out on the way over but were fearless on the way back and walked upstairs. Definitely worth the trip!

It wasn't too long, nice breeze, fun to watch the birds and see other ferries and boats...even the drive to the ferry was lovely - great views, sweet countryside and nice to see everything!

nice way to cross the James river to go to Smithfield yes the ham peanut capital of the world. and yes it is free

Took the ferry over to Scotland, then drove to Smithfield to see the old colonial homes and eat ham!! Trip over and back was flawless and smooth over James River, which is pretty darn big!

We took the ferry yesterday while staying in Williamsburg. After going through the random security check we drove right on to the ferry and departed. We got out of our vehicle and took in the sights. It's a quick trip across and loading and unloading is fast and easy. On the return trip, we waited less than 15 minutes to be loaded onboard. It was a great service and you can't beat the price!

We take this ferry on our annual visit to the Williamsburg area. The ferry always runs efficiently and is very convenient a way to get from one side of the water to another.

This is a fun, free thing to do while visiting Jamestown. It was neat to see the settlement from the water. Once you get to the other side and a short drive, visit the Chippokes Plantation State Park. This was a great place on river for a picnic.

Ferry was clean, well run and on schedule. We appreciate the ability to easily visit Surry country and Smithfield.

It's an easy way to get across the river, though a little slow if you have to wait for the next ferry.

Took this to get to Smithfield from Jamestown. Very relaxing and a quick ride over. Surprised that it doesn't cost anything.

I had some extra time in Williamsburg besides my 7 day "Historic Triangle" pass, so decided to explore other activities. I am not sure why this is rated so high. On the way over, I was parked up against an interior wall and surrounded by cars, so I didn't feel comfortable leaving my car. (You are not allowed to choose your spot, they are all assigned) On the way back, there was a LONG line of cars to get on the ferry. Overall, I wish I had found something else to do. I can see that this might be useful if you need to get from A to B, but as an attraction in its own right it isn't very good.

Instead of traveling the normal route back NC 64 to 95 to 85 we needed a diversion. This was perfect! Very calming! Windows down ,a breeze blowing even though it was 90F! We will do this again when we have time and actually spend a little more time in Surry.

The staff guiding you on the ferry are friendly and amusing as they interact with customers. Smooth and relaxing ride. And the NO FEE makes it all the better. Runs 24/7 0n the half hour.

This free ferry is a must do as it is so peaceful and gets you to Surrey County - a hidden treasure for all ages

If you have never rode on a ferry it is a wonderful experience for you and kids. The seagulls are beautiful and attentive. Great short ride to either side. You can turn right around and come back. We have done it on the 4th of July at night and saw all of the fireworks from all of the cities surrounding James River. Lastly, it is FREE.

The Ferry provides friendly, timely, courteous, and (most important) free service for those crossing the James River. We stayed in Scotland/Surry for 5 days and took the ferry to/from Jamestown every day; we were delayed only once. and

We were in Williamsburg and looking for something to do outside of town. We decided to go to the Bacon Castle and found the best way to get there was by ferry. Two of the group had a golf tee time and was concerned that they might not be able to get back in time. When we arrived, on a Saturday afternoon, we were able to get on the first ferry across. We were concerned because there was a line when we got there. We got on quickly and headed across. The first thing we saw were the birds, standing on the pylons and the nesting large birds as well. Then we saw Jamestown from the water. Interesting. The amazing thing for us was that the ferry is free! And it runs 24 hours a day, every half hour. Amazing! The golfers got back in plenty of time for their tee time and did not have to wait for a later ferry after they arrived. Just to cross the river and see the sights would be worth it, but it also cut a lot of time for our visit to Bacon's Caste.

The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry is a free ride across the James River. You drive your car on it, and can get out and enjoy the ride in the fresh air. It only takes about 15-20 minutes to get across the river. Kids would like this.

At least once on every trip to Williamsburg, we ride the ferry, then drive to Surry and on to Smithfield. Our river cruise is always so pleasant and relaxing, as is the beautiful drive through the cotton and peanut fields of Surry and Isle of Wight counties.

I always love riding this ferry. It's a short but pleasant ride in an historical area. We barely missed the ferry but another came along about 20 minutes later.

We got there early on a Friday morning so we only had about a 10 minute wait. The process is fairly quick and the trip across the river was about 20 minutes. There were two ferries running at the time. We were able to get out of the car and walk around, views were beautiful.

I really enjoyed sitting in the car and letting the boat cross over the James River. I left Jamestown around sunset going over the river. We drove down a few streets in Surrey stopped for gas and it was pitch black by the time we got on line to go back over to Jamestown. So we cross over the river at night. I must say the boat guys know how to direct each car on and to a specific place on the boat. It all goes fine no hang ups or delays. Worth the experience.

Decided to visit Smithfield, VA on our way home and took the free Jamestown Ferry. Saved a few miles and it's a pleasant way to cross the James river. From Williamsburg follow the secondary roads or the Colonial Parkway to Jamestown and follow the signs to the dock. There is a security check but we were waved though. There are two ferries running one in each direction so the wait is usually under 20 minutes. (It takes around 20 minutes to cross the James). Ferry attendants are diligent about their work of loading and unloading cars. They advise travelers to avoid rush hour traffic. The ferry runs all year 24/7 (weather permitting). The trip is relaxing. Be sure to wave at the passengers on the ferry heading in the opposite direction as you pass mid-river.

Great free ferry to go across the James River. Highly organized about a 15 minute ride. Fun to take just for a ride on the water.

We used the ferry to travel from Jamestown and across the river to the plantation. It's a nice short trip, easy on and off, and of so wonderful that it is free. Rest rooms on board, but that's about it, no snack bar, no seating other than in your own car. Unless other ferries though, it's such a short ride it doesn't matter. It runs just about every half hour in the summer, so if you miss one, you don't have to wait long for the next trip. It certainly made getting across the river so much faster!!

It was a nice boat ride! We drive to Smithfield which is a nice little town! Prompt, easy on & off! We definitely recommend you try it

I'm from central Nebraska, so I'm used to being fairly land locked! The idea of driving a vehicle onto a boat seems very foreign to me! BUT after visiting Suffolk, a very friendly local suggested we try it! Said we wouldn't be out of anything if we didn't like it because it was free! The maps of the area didn't show it well. But the visitor's center assured us it was there. Part of the reason was that it went by different names. The Jamestown ferry, the Suffolk-Jamestown ferry...and finally, the name that the GPS wanted us to use, the Jamestown-Scotland ferry! LOL. We we're concerned about wait times and if it closed at a certain time since we were going to get there at around 5:40. I still don't know the answers to those questions because we were able to drive right on (no wait what so ever) and it didn't appear as though they planned to stop service soon because as we were departing from the South shore, another ferry was returning from the north! It was only about a 10 minute ride to Jamestown. You were able to see Historic Jamestown and the Settlement replica ships from the ferry right before we landed on the other side! You can get out of your car to look around if the conditions are favorable. Most people stayed inside the day we were there because it was very windy!
I feel like the ferry ride was a GREAT experience for us! I encourage anyone to try it! We can't wait to go back to the area! We loved it!

What fun! Got some great pictures of Jamestown from the ferry. There was no wait and no charge. Many attractions were closed for the winter months in Surry but it was a terrific sightseeing trip.

I'm not sure why this is receiving 5-star reviews. It's not really an attraction, but it is cool to see Jamestown from the water for free! Unfortunately we were slammed with a major thunderstorm while on the water. The trip is pretty quick and it's a great way to navigate to Smithfield.

Nice ride to Smithfield, but NOTHING offered on board except restrooms. Not supposed to get out of your car, but do so any way and enjoy the great view. Can be a wait on a busy day.

Ten minute ride across the James River in the comfort of your car. The volume of traffic has increased this past summer. Be waiting for the ferry (runs every 20" most of the year) 10-15" ahead of time or you may have to wait for the next ferry. There seems to be a longer wait on the Scotland side. Scenic views, including the ships at Jamestown.

I love this free ferry! It cut the time for our road trip significantly and was a pleasant ride. What an exciting service to discover as we drove out of Jamestown.

We have three kids all under the age of 12 so they thought it was cool to load the van onto a boat but beyond that it's really not an "attraction". If you've never experienced a ferry ride, go for it! It's free.

We stumbled onto the ferry while driving around looking at sites. It was nice to see the shoreline from the water all for free

Sunset is the best time to go around. You will love this so much and it’s completely free. Go today!

Our GPS took us the long way from our NC campground to Williamsburg, and we found ourselves at the car ferry landing. A first for my 11-year-old grandson, and he was thrilled.

After touring the area we came across this ferry ride. Easy on and off. All the workers were very nice. You can stay in your car or go upstairs to the observation deck. Great views from up top. We got off in Scotland and rode it back. Took a bit over an hour. Highly recommend.

Easy on and off and FREE !!!!! what more can you ask for. It was a pleasant ride and getting back on to come back was just as easy.Well worth the trip while in the area.

There's nothing better than crossing the James River on these free ferries from Williamsburg, Jamestown. Seagulls, wind in your hair harken to yesteryear. Once in Surry, lots to explore, Surry Seafood restaurant, Chippokes Plantation, Smithfield.

This ferry ride was very scenic and something different for a family from the Midwest. Line can long to get on, so be prepared.

This is a free ferry, that in itself was great. It was such an enjoyable ride across. It was smooth “sailing” easy to get on and off, and friendly, professional staff.

We didn't need to get to the other side; we just wanted to ride the ferry. What a delightful experience. We went over in our car, but we saw a family on bikes - what a great idea. The short ride across the river with a cadre of sea gulls is a very pleasant trip with great views. My kids loved it and spent the ride going back and forth from the bow to stern. We had a trailer in tow and it was still easy. It's free! Really cool to see both Jamestown sites from the river.

Free free free trip across the James river for you and your under 8000 lb car. Very cool and scenic. Nice drive down to quaint Smithfield then head east over to Yorktown for a waterfront dinner then, back north up on 64 to Williamsburg area. Great day trip.

A great alternative to bridges and tunnels. Runs regularly and is a real treat especially when you have the time.

WE took this ferry across, back and across again! loved it. the people were nice, the ride smooth and the wait was short.

BE sure to take this free 15 minute ferry for good views of the James River, especially at sunset. Although there is a small standing enclosed observation deck, most people ride in their vehicles. With waiting times to load, the round trip takes about 1 hour.

This is a must do if you have never done this before. The ferry holds around 30 vehicles a long breath motorcycles bicycles and human pedestrians. It takes about a 1/2 hour to board go across board and come back. The cost is free. You can see just how wide the James river is.

It’s ok but not the 2nd best thing to do. The historical sites are way more impressive. It’s free but goes nowhere. There isn’t a bar within 20 miles of the Scotland side. If you have nothing better to do, then ok but there’s so much more in the area

I love the ferry! We always go out of our way to ride the ferry when we visit Williamsburg! The staff is always top notch professional and friendly.

This is a fantastic experience, especially being free. The VDOT staff do a great job and are very safety conscious. Drive on, relax, and enjoy the view.

We rode the ferry in both directions between Raleigh and Williamsburg at the recommendation of the Virginia Visitor Center staffers.
The ferry staff was courteous and efficient. The ride across the river was quick.
And we truly enjoyed taking the back roads instead of the interstate hightway.

I grew up crossing lake Michigan on the car Ferrys before the Mackinaw Bridge was built. This was a very pleasant experince to ride a car ferry again. Nice and breezy and there are restrooms on board upstaris. Worth the experience just down the road from Janestown.

We were looking for a different way to head back to FL. Tired of highways and traffic. Great alternative. A different perspective seeing everything from the river.

Many vacations to Williamsburg. First time on the ferry. What a relaxing way to cross the James. We had to stay in our car - thanks, covid. But we were on the outside and had a good view of Jamestown and the river.

We were surprised to find ourselves at the ferry as we have never been routed this way in the past. We did not wait long and the ride was smooth and saved us about 30 minutes. We used this route on our return trip too.

we took the ferry to Surry. what a nice ride. also took the ferry going to Smithfield. love the ride

Wonderful activity on a sunny day and it is free! Scenery is gorgeous and the fresh air is invigorating. After the 15 minute trip from Jamestowne to Surry one can drive to Smithfield, a lovely town with several good restaurants.

We took the bridge over to the Isle of Wight, and rode the ferry back. Cut our trip in more than half. Nice way to see Jamestown from the other side.

Took the ferry to go to Smithfield and drive around the peninsula. The ferry ride was a nice surprise.

Staff are efficient at what they do and ships stay on time. Don't expect they to converse with you but they seem to know their job. Safety check points are a hassle. Clearly they choose cars who don't need to be loaded right away. Not the friendliest group but then again....

We took the Ferry after leaving the Jamestown Historical Center. There is a fast inspection for security purposes. As we were leaving I asked one of the security inspectors if I paid for the ferry before boarding. I was surprise there was no charge. The Ferry is small so you stay in your car. The crossing is only about ten minutes and the ferries run continuously.

We had a great time on this ferry. We decided to go to Smithfield, the pork capital. Smithfield bacon and all kinds of pork. If you are going to take the ferry, get in line early. They line up and once they begin boarding if you don’t get on you have to wait for the next one. 30 minutes. Fun ride.

I love riding on this ferry! It's great to see all the buildings on the shoreline. Always cools you off as well!

Absolutely a must do when in Williamsburg!! Even if you go turn around and ride back across before going to Jamestown. So fun! Bring seagull food!

Our first time on this free ferry to Smithfield, we enjoyed the 20 minute ride, plan to do it again our next visit.

I searched for some different things to do while in the Williamsburg and Jamestown area forI the weekend and found the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry.
Much to our surprize, it was only minutes from where we were starying. We timed it just right and drove on the ferry just before it departed.
It was rather chilly and being on the river made it even chillier, so we stayed in the car during the ride. The ride across the river only takes about 15 minutes and if you watch the shoreline, you can see some ruins from Jamestown, lots of shore birds and if you time it right, a gorgeous sunset.
We drove into Surrey County and enjoyed the landscape. There were remnants of cotton plants so in areas it looked like clumps of snow.
There were a few plantations to visit, but those will have to wait until next trip.
It's worth the time to ride the ferry, even if you just ride over and back. The ride itself is smooth and it was fun to watch the shorebirds hover around the ferry and behind it looking for food.
We will definitely enjoy the ferry on the next trip to Jamestown.
Very cool and it's FREE!

We were visiting in Williamsburg and were excited to know we could take the ferry to meet good friends for Saturday lunch in the Smithfield area. Due to COVID-19 restrictions unfortunately we weren’t able to enjoy the cruise on the deck of the ferry. A great experience.

The drive to the ferry was quite odd, through back roads and countryside. Easy on and off for your vehicle. A ten minute or so ride to Jamestown.

It was a great experience riding the ferry. It was Very relaxing. After we crossed, we ate it the Surry seafood co. It was very good.

We always use the Ferry when going to and leaving the Jamestown/Williamsburg/Yorktown area. Saves time and the ride is relaxing with great views.

Great way to get to Surrey as well as just a free ride across the James River and back. I believe it runs on the half hour but be there earlier to get in line.

Pricey ($53) but well worth it. Cool breeze, comfortable inside facilities, lovely deck to walk around and explore, breath in fresh ocean air. Great moment to relax and take it all in.

The ferry is free and the best way to watch for eagles and other birds that live near the river. The trip is only about 20 minutes, but the views are magnificent. Take the time to drive around on the other side of the river. Interesting settlements and old churches etc. A nice break in a busy vacation schedule.

It's true.... sometimes we ride the ferry- just because. You don't have to be going anywhere in perticular- this short trip features stunning views along the james river- if you're lucky you'll catch the sunsetting and my kids love it. It's free- you just drive your car into the ferry- pop out and have a look around. Maybe head to college run farm and pick some strawberries or pumpkins while youre at it.

Great shortcut, but stay away from rush hour when traffic builds up quickly. Multiple ferrys are running, 24/7, so even then the wait is not horrible if you are prepared.
Our adventure occured when our vehicle would not start when it was time to disembark. The crew quickly applied a jump start power pack and got us going immediately. Apparently, this kind of thing happens often, and they are well prepared.
KUDOS to the crew!

This free ferry allows you to see the river and Jamestown Island and often bald eagles and osprey. A short ride to the other side and then return. There is something calming and entirely relaxing about this experience.

The Jamestown and Jamestown-Scotland ferry travels across the James River between Jamestown and Surry County. We use it to visit two of our favorite places--Bacon's Castle and the Virginia Diner. The ride on the ferry is tons of fun. During the summer there can be a bit of a wait to get on, but it's worth it. The crossing is seamless and beautiful. You can see all sorts of birds, some of which I've never seen. I even caught a picture of an osprey catching a fish. This is old-fashioned fun, relaxing, enjoyable, and FREE! Highly recommended...

Very pleasant cruise across the the James River. Sit back in your vehicle or get out and enjoy the ride and the view.

Well organized, efficient and a pleasant ride. Sure beats driving through traffic to a bridge! I’d take this ferry again if Inam in the area.

My wife and I ended up taking the ferry to Surrey on a somewhat rainy, overcast day when we had nothing else to do. We are definitely going to make a return visit on a nicer day. The first thing that surprised us was that the ferry was free. Be prepared for spot security checks of our car.
Surrey itself is an interesting place. There is a pretty impressive state park. Be sure to get a sense of what you want to see and where you want to go prior to your visit. We didn't and missed what looks like some interesting spots (including a castle).
There is also an amazing seafood restaurant immediately to either the right or the left as you embark/disembark the ferry on the Surrey side. On the trip over and back you will also get a good view of the original Jamestown settlement.

We travel to Williamsburg from our home in Western Virginia via US 460 to avoid I-81 and I-64 as much as possible. To get to Williamsburg from 460, we've been using the ferry for years. You may have to wait a little while, depending on when you get there, and security has been ramped up a lot in the last few years, so don't be surprised if you're asked to pull over for a vehicle search. But the ride is definitely worth it, and you get off right at the Colonial Parkway. Can't beat it.

During a week long visit in Williamsburg, we planned a ride on the ferry (r/t) to the town of Surry. The ride is pleasant (weather related), and lasts about 30 minutes each direction. The ferry usually leaves on the half hour, so plan accordingly. There are two ferry's running simultaneously. Hope this helps with your first visit.

So fun to board the ferry for the short trip over the river to Surry County. Easy access with great staff to make sure you get on and off smoothly. Fun for the kids to climb upstairs for the view of Jamestown settlement.

Unless you're a REALLY STRONG swimmer, it's the only way to get across the James River. They run on a regular schedule with a little bit of a wait. Very picturesque ride. Good views of Jamestown. Generally a smooth ride and it's free.

The ferry is free. Runs on a regular schedule. A nice time to relax on your way across the river. Enjoy the view. Or your coffee and the newspaper

Not many places left in America where you can take a ferry, so don't miss this opportunity if you get it. We took it after visiting Historic Jamestowne and we were going over to Smithfield, so this was a charming way to travel to get there.

We took the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry around 4:00 on a Saturday. They have two ferries running but had to wait 35 minutes since we did not make the cut on the first ferry. When we got to the other side there must of been 100 cars waiting to come back we took the road less traveled back to the other side of the James River. The views are beautiful from the ferry but beware the smell from the birds at the pier is strong.

Nothing like a ferry ride over to Williamsburg. Lines are usually not long but it runs about every 20 minutes. Great view outside the car to walk around while traveling to the shore. Birds everywhere. No charge and a great adventure for the kids.

It's free. The continual running is ideal. And it's only 20 minutes to get to the other side. What more could you ask for? And please stop at Surry Seafood Company (5 minute drive form the ferry on the Scotland side) if you get the chance and spend some time having a drink and some exceptional food.

On a nice sunny day we cruised to the other side on this ferry. There's nothing to do there but it kept us busy for a while.

A short (15ish minute) ferry ride across the James River affords a unique, from the water view of the Jamestown settlement much as it must have looked to settlers to the new world.

This a great way to get across the James River from the Jamestown area to the Scotland area. We waited about 15 minutes for a very quiet and smooth ride to the other side. It took about 20 minutes to cross the river and then we explored Smithfield for a half a day.

I usually never have to wait long for the ferry when I need it. Smooth sailing with no issues. A nice change from just driving.

As the cars were loaded I noticed an Ospray nest with about 8 babies watching us from their nest on a high pillar. What a welcome to Williamsburg. The ferry passed the Jamestown settlement where we could see the large sailboats like the settlers arrived on. The staff was very plesent, and worked fast to get us over to the Williamsburg side

For visitors to the area the ferry is a great alternative to the familiar, boring drives we usually experience. It is an effective means to travel between Williamsburg and the stress of the busy highways, and it is free. Wait times are minimal, the view is great, and for tourists it is a nice way to experience the rural communities south of the river.

Love this ferry. I take it every time I'm here just because it's fun, free and offers amazing river views.

Since we had time before we had to be at the airport, we decided to take the ferry across on our way from Williamsburg to Norfolk. It was very easy to get on, park, short ride across-maybe 20 minutes, easy off and we were on our way. Would definitely recommend! Be prepared for your car to be inspected before getting on.

We went over to try a restaurant in Surry (which was kinda mediocre) but the boat trip there and back was great. Only negative was that the cars were supposed to turn off their engines on the boat and many did not. Understandable if this was 90 degrees, but it was reasonable temps, so they should have been able to turn their a/c.

Heading to The Surry Seafood Company for lunch we take a short 20 minute auto ferry from Williamsburg to Surry across the James River. Easy on, easy off. Ferry is clean with a friendly crew -- plenty of space to get out of the car to stretch your legs and capture a few pictures. An enjoyable ride indeed!

A MUST FREE Ferry ride from historic Jamestown to Surrey, VA. Great views of Jamestown water line and James River. Kids will enjoy the hovering birds too. Whenever we come to Hampton Roads VA we always take this ferry even if it’s a 25 minute trip back and forth. Enjoy snapshots too.

If your timing is right, you won't have to wait more than 20 minutes...the trip is super relaxing, especially when the weather is nice! But be warned....hit the head before you get aboard and have to go, on our last trip from Scotland Neck to Jamestown in October....I've experienced much cleaner porta-potties when I was in Mosul in 2004.....and wifey said the women's "room" was worse than the Urbana Oyster Festival after three days of hard rain. If you don't have to go, this is 5 Stars, but if you gotta go, it drops down below zero, ergo, give this one a 3....but be warned....

I’ve been taking the ferry for years. I take it to get to a vacation spot up the James River at least once a year but there are other reasons. First, it’s amazing how many people have never been on a ferry. This river ferry is very smooth and doesn’t rock. It’s a 20-30 minute trip and you can get out of your car and walk around. On most there is an enclosed viewing area with restrooms. No snack bar but again it’s only 20-30 mins. Another reason to take it is to explore the beautiful countryside in Surry, Waverly, etc. On the way you can go to the Surry Seafood Company for which you will see signs a mile or two after getting off the ferry. After that and Anna’s there aren’t too many other options unless you go to Smithfield or continue to Waverly.
For anyone visiting here are two things two remember. During the tourist season the ferry runs every half hour but the traffic get really heavy in no small part because of its location to James River Beach and The Jamestown Settlement. Second, you can go to Surry then down to Smithfield and across the James River Bridge or through Monitor Merrimack to get back to Williamsburg-essentially a loop. Smithfield can be a very nice stop with downtown having some great shops on Main Steeet and small restaurants.

I have lived in Williamsburg for many years and have ridden the ferry many times. It takes 20-30 minutes so just get out of the car and walk around. Plan ahead and bring some bread to feed hungry seagulls. Keep an eye out for the reproduction Jamestonw boats that you can see from the ferry. Relax and enjoy the ride.

My wife and I decided to check out the Ferry last night and it was awesome. Quick boarding and de-boarding process, and despite the amount of people and vehicles on the boat, it was still peaceful. definitely worth checking out!!

It was a pleasure to take this free ferry. The sun was shining so I got out of my car to enjoy watching the birds and feeling the breezes. A pleasant 20 minute journey.

Far more enjoyable than the highway routes, and it's actually a shortcut if you're heading South from Williamsburg!
The crew was very efficient, as well as pleasant. In addition to just sitting in the cabin and watching the scenery, and going outside on the windy deck for a while, it's also worth exploring the various decks of small ship.
The highway routes might save a few minutes, but there's less driving time this way, saves gas, and the ferries are free! Besides, it far more scenic than the Interstate

If you have to go out anyway, why not take the ferry. It doesn't save time, but it is a fun addition to the trip

I enjoy ferry rides, and this one did not disappoint. The scenery was amazing as the sun was setting over the river. It is a detour worth taking.

The trip across the James river is very nice. Easy driving your car on and off. Its about 1/2 hour to go across. very relaxing!

By a stroke of luck we went on a ferry ride. I asked a worker at the Jamestown Settlement a good place for lunch and he suggested the ferry to the Surry Seafood fish market. Well worth it! The ferry was free and was running avery 1/2 hour.

Fun trip across the River , we just wanted something different to do and it’s free. We drove to Smithfield were there are a few restaurants and some nice little shops, worth the trip

The trip is very pretty and it is FREE! The kids really loved it. We went across, had lunch in Surry and came back.

Took this picture not noticing the little boy standing next to my wife. So you never know who might be in your next photo.

We now always take the ferry wherever we are going to the Williamsburg area. It is free entertainment, relaxing and this route avoids much of the traffic of Richmond and the Hampton Roads area. Just be aware that you may have to enter Scotland Ferry as the destination for your GPS. Then, when you board the ferry, reprogram your GPS with your final destination.

We were crossing the James River from Surry County to Williamsburg and took this free ferry. For those that have not ridden a ferry or have children that have never gone on a ferry they should take this short trip. The river sites of birds, other ferry going by and fishing boats are fun to see. The dock piling are covered with birds. Birds follow the boat but do not feed. The Williamsburg side docks next to the 3 ships dock at Jamestown Festival Park. You can see the ships from the docking station. Beach and campground next to bridge. Love this trip as reminds me of growing up in area and riding this ferry plus large ferries across the Chesapeake Bay to the Eastern Shore of Virginia. A must see and do!

This VDOT sponsored ferry runs 24 hours each day approximately every 30 minutes until midnight when it runs on the hour. The trip across the James takes about 15 minutes and is very busy at rush hour times. Plan your trip accordingly. It is a fun place to see nesting bald eagles as you pass from the dock onto the river. You can get out of your car and walk around which is nice.

We try and take the ferry every time we're in the area. It's a fun adventure for visitors to the area and gives you a wonderful view of the Jamestown Settlement from the James River.

Free and worth doing once, if you haven't before. It takes about a half-hour each way to cross the James River. It is a chance to get some nice views of the James, and enjoy the weather. Probably not worth doing on a rainy or snowy day.

We enjoy taking the ferry over to the Surry side to pick strawberries and pumpkins. It's a short enough ride for the children to enjoy without getting bored.

Used this VDOT ferry to cross the James River from Jamestown, Va to Surry, Va. The ferry ride is free and can be considered a short cut across or treated like a tourist attraction. It operates 24 hrs a day, and we went across around 10 AM and were the first vehicle on board. Cars and trucks and commercial trucks use it, but I'm not sure of the size restrictions. Lots of birds and the Jamestown historical park and boats can be seen. You can sit in your vehicle or get out as you cross the river. Approximately a 20-minute crossing. Loading the ferry accounts for most of the time to get across, I would say. Something a little bit different to do when in this part of Virginia!

fun to ride ferry, see birds, see the Jamestown National Park from the ferry. Ferry 24/7 provided by Virginia. Drive on approximately every half hour. More ferries during rush hour.

We took the scenic route from Virginia Beach to Williamsburg via Smithfield and Surry. It was worth it for the ferry ride! Not many places where you can experience this left, and my family had a blast!
We didn't have to wait long, and we also were pulled for a random security screening. The officers were very friendly and courteous and got us through quickly.
Driving on and off is very easy with attendants to direct everything you do with clear, simple instructions.
Once the ferry is underway, you can get out and walk around. We walked up on the upper deck to get a great view of the river and Jamestown during our crossing. Highly recommend doing this (weather permitting).

Our grandkids loved the ferry--and we did, too. Scenic travel mode across the bay. The ferry carried our car which allowed us to travel around the Surrey area once we left the ferry. Very orderly boarding and disembarkment, very clean. We enjoyed it!

This break from the interstate was a fun end to our day at Colonial Williamsburg. I don't think I could find it again as easily as I did this day, as we sort of stumbled upon it. What a great find!

This Virginia Department of Transportation ferry is a 15-20 minute ride from Surry VA, a very rural farm area, to busy Jamestown/Williamsburg VA. It runs 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Enjoy this historic area by ferry!

We used the ferry both ways to cross the James River. It is free. Both times is was on time. Our wait time was short. It leaves every 30 minutes. Nice view of colonial Jamestown can be seen.

As Williamsburg locals, we rarely take the Jamestown-Scotland ferry but recently took it to visit Smithfield for the day. Lovely views accompanied our trip across the James River with just a short wait before embarkation & debarkation. Debating whether to drive through Newport News on the return trip at the end of the day, traffic back-up reports sent us back via the ferry. No wait and lovely sunset views made our trip extra special! For those visiting this area, the ferry is a fun way to see Jamestown from the water and also visit Smithfield, a small town with lots of charm!

If you are in Williamsburg and you'd like to explore the surrounding area, visit the Jamestown/Scotland Ferry for a free ride over to Surry and Smithfield! Drive your car on board and sail across the river! So much fun!

Plan to wait over 1.5 hours before catching the ferry on a Sunday. No reviews warned us of this. Would've been faster to drive the long way around. It was or first time here so we had no idea and no warnings about the long wait. After driving 4 hours already, this was not how we wanted to spend our afternoon.

It’s absolutely beautiful and free and it operates every single day of the year and 24 hours. Being a local resident I take it from Jamestown. What beautiful scenery of the James River and other Historical Sites. It’s a breeze getting on and off it with attendants guiding. Get out of your car and go up to steps to the second floor and enjoy the scenery. The Pocahontas is my favorite. The best kept secret of visiting Williamsburg-James City County. You cross to Surry County where you can buy fresh peanuts from the farms. Check the local lovely shops, return or continue driving through beautiful country side to get to Smith Field. Warning: watch your speed limit.

It is a nice ride and it is free, if you don't mind poor schedule keeping, security stuff and a wait to get on and off. The ride is about 20 minutes across the James River.

Free! A great view of the river and the approach to Jamestown. i especially liked standing up front and seeing everything as we went across the river.

Was a warm clear day for December so we decided to use the free ferry over to have a relaxing lunch on the water. The ferry ran right on time and was super easy to board your car and get there quick and back!

We take the ferry often since we live in Williamsburg. It’s a great experience with great views. I would advice you to be there early as there is always a wait.

This was my daughter first time taking a ferry. It took us over to another part of the island. It was exciting to find out what was on the other side. We were able to tour the island and the mansion. I love seeing the cabins in Chippokes Plantation State Park. This was a very enjoyable visit.

Surprising little gem. Doesn't cost anything (or didn't when I went) and if nothing else it's a relaxing little jaunt to the other side. I was a little confused finding it but was super glad I did. The staff was lovely also.

great thing to do. We learned of this at about or 5th trip here. Our grown daughter & hubby liked it. We'll take our granddaughter, her hubby & great grandchildren--ages 4, 2 & 3 months. The older ones will be super excited!

Riding the free ferry was most enjoyable. We planned a day in Smithfield to take a day trip. We found the ferry easily with the road signs and GPS. We got the 1st bow position , it was a windy choppy water day, but the ride was smooth. Great views of the water, land and seabirds.
The ferry was on time both directions. We stayed in the car because of the wind... I even took a nap on the return trip. Best free attraction that would be overloaded by many.

This is a great service operated by the VA highway department and it is free. Saves quite a few miles and is fun

What a pleasure to cross the James River on the ferry. Not only does it cut lots of miles from having to cross the James River Bridge, the ferry is free and provides a lovely ride on the water.

Relaxing trip across the river to Surry. Not much to do over there because we got there about 4:30 and everything closed about 5. However, we did stop at a great cupcake ice cream shop. Both times, we caught the ferry and didn’t have to wait.

An amazing crossing of the James River. I loved it. Where can you cross a river and see osprey and commerants?

Security upon arrival, under vehicle camera on a pole, short ride. Disappointed that we couldn't get out and walk around but they had us packed in tight!

This ferry is operated by the government and doesn't cost you anything to get on. Sometimes you have to wait but it is worth it.

This ride is free!!! Unbelievable. It was a fun experience and gave us a break from driving. The loading and unloading of cars is quick and easy.

We spent 3 days in the historic triangle & enjoyed all of the attractions. Our 10 year old had never been on a ferry, so we took her on this FREE ferry. Although she loved all of the attractions, she requested to be taken on the ferry several times. The ferry goes about every 20 minutes. We were able to get turned around 1 time & get back on the same ferry. There are several attractions on the Surry side, so we do recommend trying to see some. I believe I saw a sign for Smithfield Hams and several other places when we drove around on our first trip over. We enjoyed getting our on the deck & seeing the views & breezes. These ferries can close for weather, so keep that in mind.

It was our first experience on a cars ferry, and it felt scary at first. We went at night thinking that we were going to see lights, but there was nothing to see. We didn’t have time during the day, but maybe the experience would have been better then. Overall the experience was fine. At least it was not a waste of money since it was free. Lol

Though you must now stay in your car instead of going upstairs or standing at the rail, the ferry ride is great - a relaxing way to get from one side of the James River to the other. Staff are helpful and professional. Love traveling this way!

This is a fun trip, even if you only go across to "Scotland" and back again. If you go on Saturday you can go to the local market at Smithfield - lots of interesting stalls and such a quaint place to wander around. The ferry runs on time - the facilities are basic but it only takes about twenty minutes and weather permitting, you can walk around and look at the scenery. It's also free!

A unexpected pleasure. The ferry's run 7x24, departing either side approximately every 30 minutes. It's free and you can either stay in your vehicle or get out and go topside for a great view of the James River.

I always make a point to get out of my vehicle and watch the water go by, it is always so peaceful! The staff is always very professional and courteous.

This is a fast and easy way to cross over the James River and have a bit of fun while doing it. Surprisingly, it's free! There were 10-15 vehicles in front of us waiting to get on but the staff quickly directed each vehicle to the appropriate spot and we left the shore at 4:22P. The ride was smooth and we arrived on the Jamestown side much more quickly than we expected. Exiting the ferry was fast and efficient as the staff expertly directed vehicles to drive off, and we were on our way. Would utilize this ferry again!!!

I saw the ferry when we were at Jamestown and asked about it, and was surprised to learn it was free. Since we were heading south we took the ferry across to Scotland where we picked up lovely country back roads taking us back to I-95, totally bypassing Richmond. What a great way to go!

Even if you don't have to go to Scotland it is a fun time!
I wanted the family to see what it is like to go with the car on a ferry. The kids loved it

Beautiful views, fresh breezes! What’s not to love? Feed the seagulls-and it’s all free! Can even be a “short-cut” from Williamsburg to Virginia Beach. Don’t miss Surry and Smithfield along the way. And the fall brings cotton fields ready for harvest that are so much fun to photograph!

We took the ferry to have dinner at the Surrey Seafood Restaurant. On the way back, we enjoyed a beautiful sunset! The ferry is free and runs often in the summer.

Took the ferry over to see Smithville. The ride was smooth and didn't have to wait but a few minutes. It's FREE too.

One of the things recommended we do by family who visits Williamsburg nearly every year. We took it across then did a little exploring before returning. One spot we found was the Edwards VA Ham Shop. They gave us instructions on soaking/cooking so anxious to have it. We then took it back across. First off amazed "no charge" but also how many of the birds actually rode back and forth.

A unique experience that seems to lead to nowhere but we were pleasantly surprised to find a wonderful local seafood restaurant with a view of the bay. Surry Seafood market had friendly staff and wonderful food. We even tried the oyster on the half-shell and were very pleased.

With the hot summer weather, we decided to take the ferry and see Surry, VA and environs. The trip over was lovely. The views nice. Not much on the other side but we did go and see Fort Smith and one of the oldest brick homes in the state. Must say, though, that we liked the ferry so much that we used it to take a different route home to North Carolina. Enjoyable. And it's free!

My visit to Williamsburg would not be complete if I didn't take the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry across the river to go to Smithfield. Love it, I highly recommend.

Living in the mountains of East Tennessee, a Ferry Ride is not something our family had had the opportunity to do. The kids marveled at the cars on the ferry; and loved walking up to the upper deck of the Pocahontas as we traveled across the bay. It was a fun, free experience for all of us.

We ventured off 95 to head northeast, slow going with many corn fields and various other plantations, we even had a detour off 31, finally came upon the ferry, so worth the trip! Easy on and off, we timed it well with little wait, you are allowed to get out of your car too! We walked around and took pictures- typical tourists! The area is picturesque and the ferry is great! No cost and we ended up close to Williamsburg! If you love a free boat ride - do this!!!

Who doesn’t love taking a car ferry to another island?! Don’t sit in your car while taking the ferry; enjoy the breeze and atmosphere. Great little (big) ride.

Took the bridge one way and the ferry back. It's a very interesting feeling to be moving in a vehicle, but not driving yourself. The crews are friendly and very helpful for any oversized vehicle. Definitely something to do if you get the chance.

What a cool little side trip across the river. So glad VDOT has this and has made it free. Ride the river that the first settlers into jamestown did and see the same sights!

The frequent schedule makes this route very appealing and takes you on the quieter roads away from the madness of the interstates. The crew are friendly and there is nothing like a 15 minute sea voyage to calm the mind.

If you're visiting the historic triangle and you're looking for something to do. Try the ferry!. It's free and efficient. It's a great ride across the James River. You have plenty of time to get out of your car and look around. Smithfield is a cute little town if you want to continue inland on the other side. Otherwise, just make a U-turn on the other side and come back. You can also grab some water Pokemon if that's your thing...

We picked a wonderful day to bike to Jamestown and picked up the free 365/24/7 ferry right near the Jamestown Settlement visitor center. We had to wait just a couple of minutes for the ferry to arrive but soon we were on the way to Surry. From the ferry you can see Jamestown port with the replica boats (17th century). All sorts of bird accompany you to the other side where you will be greeted by the small, yet charming town of Surry (pop. 234). It is a lovely way to spend either a half or a full day. If you choose to add other activities like going to the Dominion nuclear plant or one the many plantation or hike around Hog Island Wildlife park.

A great way to escape the crowded peninsula and have a more rural driving tour. Pedestrians and cyclists can also use the ferry, but must wait for cars to load first.
If you're already in Jamestown, why not?
Walk up the stairs to the enclosed viewing deck, or step out onto the open viewing area. See a nice view of Jamestown Island, watch the seagulls following behind, and enjoy the ride across the James River.
It's fleet of ferries.

We've never been on a ferry before, and it was a pretty cool experience and a beautiful day to do so. They constantly run and it's free. You can get out of your vehicle and enjoy the 15-20 minute trip across the James River. On the other side, we toured Bacon's Castle, the oldest documented brick structure built in 1665. The guided tour is about 45 minutes long and costs $10.00. It was about 8 miles from the ferry.

Another amazing trip to Williamsburg which is not kicked off until the catch the ferry from Surrey on the Southside of the James River to the Northside which nestles up to the Jamestown Settlement. A beautiful ride that is smooth, comfortable and enjoyable. This is how we always start and end or trips to Historic Williamsburg and it never disappoints. The Staff of the ferry are pleasant and informative. Don't miss this opportunity if you don't have to.

Took our granddaughter on her first ferry ride our to Jamestown. Great trip & very scenic. Awesome experience !!

Going north or south, to or from Williamsburg, take the ferry. Simple trip for me as I headed south after visiting Jamestowne. Access to the ferry was easy and the trip across the river only enhanced my Jamestowne experience as I could see the island from the river view.

This was a fun Ferry Ride and especially fun for the children to get to have the vehicle drive on the big ferry and then to be able to get out and walk around. Since we had been seeing this Ferry from a distance for several days, we thought it would be extra fun to get to ride on it.

There's not a whole lot to this ferry. The lines aren't very long and it lasts only a few minutes. But you can get out of your car and enjoy the fresh air and just relax for a bit.

Just a fun FREE ride across the Jamestown river.....Gorgeous views...No charge though for the bird poop on your car after the ferry ride LOL

We were looking for the Bobsburg brewery and wound up on the ferry after missing the turn. Still a nice round trip ride, definitely go up on the top deck for a better view. Surprised it was free.

There is nothing spectacular about this ferry except that it is free. If you enjoy being on the water, it is nice. The few attractions in Surry are not open daily; some persons go for the restaurants.

A great way to get to Wakefield, Smithfield and beyond from the Williamsburg and Jamestown area. It's free and runs frequently, 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

We took the ferry so we could visit Bacon's Castle. It was the first ferry we took our vehicle on. The staff were professional and took their job seriously.

An outsatanding ferry boat ride, especially at sunset or sunrise. We used it to get to a very good restaurnt on the western side pf the James River (more like a lake at this crossing).

We took the ferry across the James on our way to Smithfield for the day. Better than the traffic clogged interstate, and much more scenic.

We’ve been enjoying crossing the James, literally for decades. But we were in line for over an hour heading northbound on a Saturday afternoon. I’ll skip it on weekends.

For a trip across the James River, in search of peanut stores, we hopped onto the ferry. Boarding was straightforward and the attendants were organized and efficient.

The staff was extremley freindly! The boat does what it needed to do. Got us from point A to point B quickly and safely.

Must thing to do when you are in colonial Williamsburg area. It is free, yea that's what I said free. The whole trip to and from is about a hour or so. You can get out and walk around on the ferry and the fresh air. Don't miss it.

We were in Jamestown and kept seeing the ferry crossing the river. After we were done at the colony we decided to go exploring. To our surprise the ferry was free so we jumped on. Once on board you can leave your vehicle and walk around. There is an observation deck that you can get a great view of Jamestown from. If you take the trip, I highly recommend grabbing some food from Anna's Pizza & Italian restaurant. Wonderful pizza and a great staff.

My wife and I stayed in Surry while visiting the Jamestown/Williamsburg area. We took this ferry across the James River twice a day for four days, and enjoyed it every time. It's amazing that this is a free service. It took about 30 minutes one way, but the time went fast when you're enjoying being on the water.

If you are not is a rush to get across the river from Jamestown to Surry/Scotland then this is worth the time. On a day trip back in June, not is any particular rush, I took the Jamestown Ferry from Jamestown to the southside (Scotland/Surry VA). The trip is free of charge and the view of the historic site of Jamestown is worth it.
The trip takes about 20 minutes not including the wait time for the ferry. On weekends and the summer the carline for the ferry can be long, so be patient. Once on the ferry, they do allow passengers to exit their cars and go up to either the observation deck or the railing.
They do have restrooms onboard but they do not have any snack or drink machines. So hopefully you can wait or at least have something in your car.
The trip is on a regular schedule 7 days a week, 365 days a year and 24 hours a day. Reason is that it is a commuter route for those that either live or work on either side of the river. The only concern would be the weather.
The major point of interest would be the view of Jamesown settlement. You would be able to see the replica ships and also the actual site of Jamestown. It would not be hard to miss.
'Lastly if you are really in a hurry, the only other crossing would be the Benjamin Harrison Bridge up near Hopewell (at least a half hr to 45 min drive west) or down to Newport News (James River Bridge) another half hr to 45 min drive east.

This must be one of the most efficient ferry services in the world. Although free, the staff is helpful, very friendly, and informative. Looking at the wooded shores, only interrupted by the colossal memorial to Captain John Smith and the Jamestown founders, one can imagine the three small ships bringing the first English colonists up the James to found the first permanent English speaking colony in the New World.
Highly recommended but come early as there are lines for cars and trucks and it is first come, first served.

Nice efficient trip across the river. Getting on and off easy. About 20 minutes to cross.two ferries run during the busiest time of day.

Roll on, roll off, free of charge. Lovely views. Staff willing to spend the time of day. Whats not to loike?

This ferry is awesome! Short 20 minute ride to Surry and great James River views. The ferry is clean, fast, and free!!! We so enjoyed the experience, start to finish! We will do it again when back at Williamsburg.

This is an absolute must if you go to Williamsburg. It is free and an absolute delight. About 15 mins each way. There is a viewing deck from which you get lovely views of Jamestowne and the river.

we drove to Smithfield for the day (long drive thru pouring rain. Decided to take the ferry back to Williamsburg! so convenient, and the ride was smooth (even during the storm).

If you are looking for a soothing ferry ride, this is the one to take. Its short and sweet and connects Jamestown and Scotland and the ride is very smooth.

Unexpected ferry ride while headed to another adventure. It was great being able to get out of your vehicle and watch from the passenger cabin!

We go this way each time we come, just fun for anyone, kids or elderly, so the next time you go, figure out how to get on the ferry and go

This was a fun free car ferry that we accidentally got on. It was fun, about 20 min across. Found the Bacon Castle on the drive around the area, not open but fun to look at. Also found a great seafood place by a little marina.

We took the ferry from Scotland to Jamestown, VA. It was very relaxing, easy on & easy off. The best part....it was FREE! Short wait, ferries run frequently. Nice ride & did I mention...FREE!

Rode the ferry last month as we returned to Williamsburg from the Outer Banks. Rather than drive through rush hour in Norfolk we went cross country to the ferry. Admittedly it may have been faster driving in traffic and the road to the dock is a narrow country
track, but that's part of the fun.
Very pretty farms and countryside. The ferry is free and makes many crossings of the river daily so you won't have to wait to long for the next crossing. Once we were onboard it took about 15-20 minutes to cross. If you have the time make this crossing at least once.

A friend took me on this ferry ride to go to dinner. What a little hidden gem. A free ride on a ferry to kill some time with the family, especially if the kids have never been on one.

This is about a 20 minute ferry ride that goes between Jamestown, VA and Scotland, VA. Scotland is a small community that you pass through in a blink. The best part of the ferry is feeding the seagulls and pigeons that follow behind the boat, so take some bread, crackers, something to feed them. If you find one bold enough they will take it right out of your hand, but if not they will catch what you throw mid air most of the time. There are no concessions on board, just restrooms upstairs. Take a short trip, turn around and do it again.

I recommend this for tourists who come to visit Jamestown/Colonial Williamsburg. The ride takes about 15-20 minutes one way. Beautiful scenery. There were interesting local birds.

We have family in the Williamsburg area and take the ferry on every visit. They are always on time !

The ferry has operated since 1925 and now is run by the state. It operates 24 hours, 365 days. If you are visiting Jamestown, it's a fun adventure to go over to Surry for lunch.

I have taken this ferry many times since childhood and do it everytime I come to Williamsburg. In fact, I got engaged on this ferry many years ago.

My family and I drove our car onto the Ferry and back. The wait time is minimal. I am pretty sure the ferry is actually used for residents on either side of the river and not for tourists. There is no there, there. LOL

Ferry is very efficient and runs every half hour and is FREE. Fun to get out of car on the 20 minute ride from Jamestown to other side of river. Beautiful ride. We took the backroads here from I-95 and avoided going up to Petersburg/Richmond and down to Williamsburg. May be long lines to get on in the morning from Surry and from Jamestown in the afternoon. I figured it was people going to work in the Wmsbg & Jamestown in the morning and returning home in the afternoon. Kids will love it.

We have taken this ferry for years and always enjoy it. Very dependable and the route home is much less boring.

This is the quickest way to get from Jamestown to Surry County and is used by commuters regularly. It is a relaxed trip and the workers do a fine job getting cars on and off the ferry. It's nice to sit back and enjoy yourself for the relatively short trip.

I love riding the Ferries between Scotland Wharf and Jamestown. Quiet calming experience. I visit Williamsburg quite ofter and prefer taking the Ferry.

Free Ferry and operates 24/7, year round. Be sure to check Ferry schedule to avoid long delays waiting for the Ferry.

We bought pizzas at the Jamestown Pie Company (1804 Jamestown Rd, Williamsburg, VA) and drove down to the ferry, drove on, turned off the engine and had our lunch while enjoying the scenery! Best of all the ride is free, which we could not believe!!!

An enjoyable way to cross the James River. Nice views and a relaxing ride. Interesting little area to ride thru and enjoy after the crossing.

Fun ride across the James River. Beautiful views. Got to see pretty wildlife and the water side of the Jamestown Settlement.

Your kids have probable never seen a ferry. So show them one. The James is an estuary here, so you can see 5-8 miles up and down river. Bring the binoculars. When you are on the SouthSide, head over to Marina seafood restaurant - it's about 3 miles in on the left side.

We wanted something to do that wasn't necessarily history related and this was perfect! The Ferry was free and a great way to get a little ride on the water on a beautiful day. It runs very precisely and the employees have it down to a science.

This was a very relaxing experience. Took the Ferry ride and then went to Surry Seafood to eat, then back on the Ferry. It was a very nice day with Family. If you are looking for something to do take the Ferry, kids will enjoy it as much as I did and it is FREE!

We decided to take a ride over the river to pass a little time. Such a fun ride, river is beautiful. The staff made sure everything moved quickly. Takes about an hour for a round trip.

Check the ferry schedule so you do not have to wait for a long period on the causeway. Typically available 24hours a day.

On our trips to Williamsburg, I plan this ferry trip on the way home from Jamestown. We live in North Carolina and it is a great last fun thing to do on the way home...plus it cuts off about 30 minutes. People living north of Jamestown might find it pointless.

Great thing to do. The ferry ride is peaceful and a nice break from driving. Easy on and off, and it is free. Not much on the other side unless Bacon Castle is open

Ferry was quick and free to use with easy access and departure with minimal wait times. We liked the short trip on the water.

How often do you get a free ferry ride? We rode the ferry back from a sightseeing trip, and just happened to time it right to drive right on. It was a nice way to experience the James River crossing and see the birds nesting on the posts.

It was a cold day and the ferry was packed but it was a nice trip. On the way to Scotland you can see Jamestowne (the monument and some buildings)from the ferry. It's about about a 15 trip from one side to the other.

Convenient, well organized and fun. No soda or popcorn for sale on noard however, so bring your own snacks. Super fun ride... so much so we did it twice in one day!

Definitely take the ferry over to Surry and explore the town. The workers are nice, there is a water fountain and rest rooms on board. This is a great way to travel the river and see birds, Jamestown settlement, etc. my girls and I loved it.

Out looking for something to do and found the ferry. It is free and picks up near the Jamestown Settlement. Not much to see in the Surrey side but the ride across the river is the point. And did I mention it wss free.

We wanted to experience an auto ferry and it was a quick and easy way to get to Scotland. It cuts a lot of time and travel to go directly across the James river vs driving. We were loaded and unloaded quickly, very efficient.

We've taken the ferry many times. It always runs on time, sails smoothly, and is a nice chance to slow down. It's free, too. Our grandkids enjoy it a lot.

First time using a ferry and best part..it's free! It was cool to be able to park your car on it and get it and enjoy the water view. It was on time and pretty fast!

We took the fairy on our way from Williamsburg to Norfolk. It was a fabulous addition to our journey. The route on the Surry side was countryside sceinic. You simple must experience it.

Unbelievable experience, sight is breath taking, you can see the mayflower, boat that the pilgrims, came on as you sale of ,try it as least one time and will see what I am talking about

Great little trip across the river. We took a ride to Smithfield which didn't have much to do. It was a great little ride though in a hot cloudy day. The ferry offers incredible views and is well worth it.

Something to do and it's free. Sometimes you have to wait a bit during busy times. Thought there might more to do on the other side and places to eat, but there wasn't a lot that we were interested in.

I realized doing my journey that I was on the Ferry with people who probably take this trip everyday or often, as I was too excited. This was my first experience on the ferry as an adult and I was MORE excited as an adult then as a child, Momma wouldn't let us get out of the car as a child. So as an adult I got to get out and explore the experience. The view was overwhelming. This whole experience for me was breath-taking. The weather was somewhat on again off again stormy but still, the experience was amazing.

Wonderful views, fun to be on the water, and it is FREE!
Only a 15 minute wait for the next car ferry. Nice passenger area and bathrooms at the top of the ship.

We love boats in general. Ferries are particularly interesting to us and this one is well done. We crossed as the fun was setting over the calm James River. T

What a great ride on the Ferry. Though a commercial route for getting between Jamestown and Smithfield it is well maintained and the crew helpful and informitive. The amazing part is there is no charge to travel on the Ferry.

One of the highlights for my grandsons was riding the ferry from Jamestown to Surry County. The ferry is free, runs 24-hours a day, and takes about 15-20 minutes. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, no one is allowed to leave their vehicles. If you are parked on the left side going over to Surry, you are able to get a glimpse of the Godspeed, Susan Constant and Discovery ship replicas used to bring the settlers to the colony. Unfortunately for us, we were on the opposite side going and it was windy on return. There were so many birds populating the pylons nearby. It looked like one was tired of waiting for whatever and decided to take a nap. Sit back and enjoy the ride.

Nice ferry ride and easily accessable to Smithville. It is located at the end of Jamestown Road,, not far from the Jamestown visitors facilities. It is easy to board and the are plenty of directions.

We were heading to Surry to tour Bacon’s Castle. Beautiful ferry ride and wonderful standing against side of boat and seeing Jamestown NP from the water side after being there a couple years ago.

Took the family on the ferry from Williamsburg to visit Smithfield. The ferry departed every 20 minutes so we didn't have to wait very long for departure. It was a nice smooth ride across the river, and the return trip went very well also. Definitely worth the effort and quicker then the long drive around.

We took the ferry after someone recommended it to us or we would have never known about it. It is free and you take your vehicle with you. It's a nice relaxing 20 minute ride to the other side. We visited Bacon Castle and Smith Fort while there. Both very interesting places to visit as well.

On our family vacation and it was our last night before heading home. Promised our grandson that he could eat crab legs. The restaurant we wanted to eat at was across the James River so we decided what better way than to let him experience a ferry ride for the first time. We took advantage of being aloud to get out of the vehicle and going up top to take in the view. Weather was great and to top it all off.....it was FREE!
GREAT value
While exploring the Williamsburg area we were pleasantly surprised to learn that this ferry crossing was FREE of charge. Bonus! A 20 minute crossing from Jamestown across the wide James River took us to the Scotland dock in Surry County. The Virginia Department of Transport runs 3 ferries which are quite frequent running every 1/2 hour. We travelled on the largest; Pocahontas. There are washrooms on board located on the upper deck. A fun experience, especially for the youngest travellers.
