Wonderful Vista!

By Mike B |

This was a short stop on our cruise ship tour but just one of the wonderful vista that we encountered.

On Location in Awe

By Lydia G |

A must do location to see awesome beauty from high above the Napali Coast. There are numerous hikes throughout for those who want to experience the astounding views that you won't get from the lookouts. Plan for at least a full day here if you really want to have a real experience. Bring water and food and take your time. Some of the trails are very challenging with steep climbs on muddy, slippery paths.

It was ok

By Rebekah H |

It was ok but have to time it just right. Maybe they should list that somewhere.y Oregon coast is still the best spot on Earth.

This place I would call average

Afraid of heights??

By Annemae B |

I went with my cousin and her bf who are both crazy Kauai locals. They asked me if I wanted to jump over the lookout railing and walk down a path to see an even more amazing view of the Na Pali Coast down below. In my head, I thought: ummm... but I don't wanna die and break any rules. Not to mention, I am terribly afraid of heights. My feet get a tingly feeling at lookouts and sometimes I get a little dizzy too. However, I decided to go for it since I would most likely not be able to come back to Hawaii for a very long time. I thought YOLO and that this would be a once in a lifetime experience. We went through the very left side of the railing and it actually wasn't really a high jump down to the dirt path. A bunch of tourists were looking at us like O_O

I absolutely DO NOT recommend doing this, but I will say that I did not regret it at all. I was so mesmerized by the view and was just awestruck by it's beauty that I didn't even have vertigo and I forgot about being afraid of heights. It looked like a painting, but the moving clouds and the helicopter tours that occasionally passed by reminded me that it was real life. We climbed back up after a few minutes since we didn't want to stay down there too long, and I was relieved that we didn't get in trouble. I definitely recommend that everyone check out Kalalau Lookout in Kauai. 4,000 feet above sea level isnt too bad!!

Be sure to visit early in the day

By UMBusinessTraveler |

We visited there on a weekend, so it was busy. We arrived at 1pm, so the cloud cover was pretty thick. Despite that, we were able to see how magnificent the views are. It would have been better if we had gotten there early as suggested. Plan ahead!

Unbelievable views

By Ness S |

It was a bit foggy when we got to the Kalalau lookout but that even helped make the views more special. As the fogged rolled along, large swathes of the most amazing scenery opened up. We were lucky enough to be able to see all the way to the Nepali coast. What contrasting colors. The reds and green on the mountain and the deep blue in the ocean. Fabulous, fabulous, and even more fabulous. Definitely a not to miss place in Kauai!

Beautiful even on a cloudy day.

By Kasa05 |

It was cloudy when we arrived and we couldn't see a thing. But gradually, the clouds deteriorated and the valley came into view like a picture developing. It was so beautiful.

Stunning Views - Mountains to Ocean

By AndChe |

A must-see in Kauai if you visit Waimea Canyon Drive - do stop at the lookout - great photo op! If it's cloudy hang around for ten minutes and watch how quickly the clouds/mist move in and out. You'll likely get a few clear shots even on a cloudy day!

Our first day out, and what a view!

By traveladict1946 |

We drove here on our own in our rental car and were disappointed that at first it was fogged in. So we waited a few minutes and the clouds blew through, revealing an amazing view to the coast. Didn't do any trails, but stopped at all the lookouts along the way to take it all in. Had delicious chili and the bean soup at the Kokee Campground Lodge. The wood burning fireplace took the chill off the damp day. The museum has interesting items, too.

Fantastic views of the Na Pali Coast

By Brenda K |

It was interesting to see the back side of the Na Pali Coast. Majestic mountains with views to the sea. A lot of people just stop at the Waimea Canyon Lookout, but continue up the road for more amazing views.

Amazing views! Worth the trip!

By aliciaq |

So glad we drove up to this lookout! It’s definitely worth the trip & there are gorgeous views all along the way! Plenty of parking at this lookout. Don’t waste your time at the ‘unmarked’ lookouts. The official ones, like this one, are the best! We went early in the morning & it wasn’t busy at all!

Must do!

By Alesha G |

One of the best things we did on our trip to Hawaii. The view was absolutely spectacular. We were blown away by the beauty if this place!

Amazing views of the weather is good

By James G |

We were very lucky the day we went. There wasn't a cloud in the sky and the views were picture perfect. The scenery is amazing and the drive up really exciting. This is a 'not to be missed' destination on this most lovely island.

Keep driving beyond Waimea, its worth it

By Wanderlushhhh |

If you think the drive through Waimea is good, then keep going. The view from Kalalau is just incredible and actually unexpected.

highlight of our trip, @end of road going to Waimea Canyon MM18 past all of the Waimea Canyon lookouts

By J M |

Go early before the clouds roll in and you want the sun to hit the mountains just right for pictures. This view was the highlight of our trip. 18 mile marker on Kokee Road after Waimea Canyon. From the Kalalau Lookout you can see the Kalalau Valley and Na Pali Coast from 4,000 feet above sea level.  This is the only way to see this coast except from a helicopter or a boat. The first time we went, we had zero visibility because of the clouds. Views are amazing driving up and down the mountains and you will pass all of the lookouts for Waimea Canyon. When you finish, eat at Porky's Food Truck in Waimea, best Kalua Pork of the trip.

Great view of Na Pali

By Pam H |

We drove up from the canyon lookout and were so glad we did. We were treated to a magnificent view. The Na Pali coast line with every shade of greenery and the Pacific Ocean blues. We were here early and missed the clouds. Made for great pictures.

Great view without clouds

By Legopod |

We got here right in time before the clouds rolled in! It's actually a nice view, but not as good as the views of the canyon. Once the clouds arrive, then you're just staring at the fog! This is a good rest stop though, with the size of the parking and the chance to walk around the grass.

One of a Kind View!

By LAM487 |

The drive to this spot is part of the attraction, as you make your way up the mountainous areas of Waimea Canyon region of Kauai. It is a very unique lookout across a small patch of the valley that leads to the Napali Coast. It is a must see, if you love nature.

Fantastic view and hiking options

By Tom M |

Kalalau Lookout provides a tops down view of the entire Kalalau Valley. Nothing short of spectacular. There are many hiking trails available as well that will take you into the tropical jungle. Well worth the drive.

Lookout point

By _steph91986 |

This lookout point offers amazing views of the Na Pali coast. Unfortunately when we went, we were in a cloud. Wait for a few minutes and it would clear periodically, tho the view was still pretty obstructed. It was still worth the drive!

Don't turn around before you get here!

By Marge W |

The rewards are at the end of the drive up Waimea Canyon to Kalalau and then Waialeale in Kokee State Park. I had done the boat tour of the Napoli coast earlier in the day and enjoyed seeing the sights from "the other side"

Views out to the Ocean

By Escape-overseas |

Almost at the end of the road. A short hike through the trees is rewarded by a view out to the ocean. Depending on the weather, at this altitude the view can be both masked or enhanced by the presence of cloud. It makes for an interesting photo opportunity.

Beautiful View

By Krista Y |

Beautiful view. Would love to do some of the hikes around. There was fog when we were there that did not lift while we waited, but still worth the visit.

The Most Beautiful View in the World -- but only IF...

By Songdoc |

The views from this lookout are magical and breathtaking -- but only if the clouds cooperate. I've been there at various times of day; sometimes the views were crystal clear. Other times the view was 100% obscured. Sometimes the clouds passed within 15 minutes and I was rewarded with rainbows. Other times, the clouds stayed :-(.

Last week I arrived around 10:30am to clouds. They passed and the views were simply spectacular--then the clouds returned. I felt so fortunate to get that view. Good luck!!!

Best lookout spot in the canyon!

By shaunfernando2985 |

Drove up the 550, having filled up in Waimea. Great views over the Na Pali Coast State Park - you are above the clouds!

Well worth it

Stunning!

By Haydn W |

We had to drive up a long windy road (oh for a manual drive!) to get here and as there was a fair bit of cloud around we weren't sure what we'd find. But it was clear and a stunning view down to the sea from 5000 feet up! Well worth the drive

Great Views!

By Mark42139 |

The views here are definitely worth it, and for sure worth a stop. We enjoyed taking pictures here. Make sure to stop.

Great views!

By mrt1955 |

This is the next to last stop on Hwy. 550. Worth stopping for the great views of th Napali Coast...plus they have restrooms after a long drive to get here.

Easy walk and often a local from Nihau to give you stories of his Island.

You cannot come to Kauai and not see this view

By Brandon K |

This is technically separate from Waimea Canyon, but is all in the same general area. The lookout gives you a view out to the Na Pali coast and the view is something you just should not miss. Words won't do it justice, so go see it for yourself.

A beautiful view

By Brinkman107 |

The lookout is nice, being able to drive up to it and see a spectacular view of the valley. However, take it a step further and do the hike that starts here. When at the lookout, if you look to your left you should see a slight break in the fence. There's a two mile trail that is amazing, and one of my favorites. Watch the weather though, as it is steep at first and can be muddy. It's not a difficult hike though, especially when it starts to level out. The lookout itself is cool, but the hike makes it much better.

Jaw Dropping Views

By James F |

The most awesomely beautiful place I have been to since climbing into Valhalla Canyon in the Grand Tetons years ago and certainly much easier to get to. I was fortunate enough to go in the morning and there were no clouds at all to obscure the view. I found out later that that happens only a few days a year. I just stood there stunned by the beauty which will be with me always. At almost a mile above the sea in "one of the wettest places on earth" I was amazed to look down at about a 45 degree angle and see a helicopter that looked tiny indeed. I feel blessed and humbled to have squeezed this experience into my current 73 years of life.
Go early and drive to the end of the road, then stop at the other stops on the way down.

Beautiful view!

By Rachel S |

Our fave part of Kalalau Lookout was hiking down Kalepa Ridge. This is a DIFFICULT trail, not for people with wobbly legs, must be sure-footed. It was definitely worth the treacherous trek over the loose dirt and steep slopes. Beautiful!

The entire canyon is amazing!

By TheFluffyDog |

This was one of the best days we had on the island. We were staying in Lihue and it really took most of the day to go on this adventure. We went all the way to the top and didn't do any hiking. Just the lookouts. Someone told us that we had to go before 10am or the fog would be in the valley and you wouldn't see the bottom, but that was not true the day we went. For sure go to the canyon and spend the needed time.

Must-see

By zinear |

Time in Hawaii is limited for most of us. Even so, I highly recommend making the drive to see this lookout. (There are many other beautiful ones along the way that I would highly recommend as well.) That said, if your time is limited, prioritize this one. The views are absolutely breathtaking, and whenever people ask me about my trip to Kauai or Hawaii, this is one of the places I always mention. The pictures can never do it justice; you have to see it in person. Highly recommended.

The Only Free Way to See the West Coast

By Glondalk |

Unfortunately for us it was raining and the view was obscured. But one short break in the clouds provided us with a spectacular view. Definately go on a day when its sunny and enjoy the winding drive to the top.

Stunning!

By Pamela H |

This might be one of the top gorgeous views in the world! Try to get there on a day when the skies are clear.

Second Best View of the Kalalau Valley

By Colin Archibald |

This view looks down the Kalalau Valley from the top of Waimea Canyou, but it is only the second best view. The Best view is the one at the end of the road Puu o Kila lookout looks down the center of the valley. This is still a spectacular view, but don't miss the last lookout.

Kalalau Viewing

By kalamakid |

There is the first lookout and the second lookout. From the second you can also see the top of Mt Wai’ale’ale on a clear day and it’s one of the starts of the Alaka’i swamp trail. Bring a windbreaker/rain jacket. Don’t leave your valuables in the car. Road to second lookout not great so low clearance vehicles need to go slow, but it’s doable as of Oct 2021. Really beautiful views when clear.

Otherworldly

By Alyssa |

The Kalalau Lookout to the Kalalau Valley is like looking into another world. Sometimes it fills in with fog and you can't see anything, and this can happen very quickly. When we stopped there, there was a little fog but the valley was still visible. We walked around for 15 minutes and came by and the valley was 100% obscured by fog. I think I heard you're more likely to see it clear in the mornings, but if it's not, just wait for a little while and maybe it will clear. The weather changes quickly on Kauai!

Iconic View

By Mikeofokc |

Driving up the Waimea Canyon is something everyone does at least once. But go the extra mile and look at what most of us never knew was there to enjoy. Finally on my 5th trip to Kauai I drove 5 minutes more and was rewarded with another item for the bucket list.

Lovely!

By hikerchick10 |

A little farther up is the Wai'ale'ale Lookout point and it was completely clouded over and raining (one of the wettest spots on earth), so when we went just a smidge father down to the Kalalau Lookout, we expected to see the same thing (nothing) and almost drove past it. But, luckily we decided to chance it and were surprised to find a decent view. Definitely worth the quick stop!

Best view of the Kalalau Valley

By TB_Rays_fan_NJ |

Their are many places on the road to overlook the valley, but this location has the widest, most comprehensive view. Drive here is not too challenging and you can park near the Overlook. The view is phenomenal. A little bit further on there is a very nice view of the valley as it ends near the Pacific. Although you cannot see as much of the valley from there, the site is very picturesque contrasting the mountain and cliffs with the ocean.

Amazing views!

By Jaime T |

This is a great way to see the Napali coast. The views are so beautiful! Just make sure to go on a clear day so you can see.

Great view & cool breezes

By Ryan S |

Loved the view of NaPali coast, and moreover, the weather. 71 degrees here vs 84 in Poipu....oh so pleasantly humid! View would depend on weather. We had relatively few clouds and it was dry all day. Restrooms available at parking. Parking seems enough - you can wait a couple minutes for someone to pull out, as average time spent here is probably 5-10 minutes total.
If in doubt to do the extra drive from first available Waimea Canyon lookout on the road...I would definitely suggest to go another 10-15 minutes to the Kalalau lookout!

A must see

By Erin |

This lookout takes over an hour to get to, but it is so worth it. The view of the coast is absolutely stunning!

Awesome

By Tyler C |

It’s really hard to describe the grandeur of this Lookout. Images don’t do it justice. Definition recommend visiting.

My only regret was not doing the hike.

Gorgeous

By SandraJL19 |

Everyone who visits Kauai needs to visit the canyon and stop at Kalalau Lookout. It will move your soul to gaze upon such beauty, I promise!

Amazing view!

By Tnylcaj |

Worth the drive up here! It can be cloudy but wait a few minutes, and there will be a brief window of time where you will get a clear view of the ocean below. Be patient and you'll be rewarded with some of the most amazing views!

By the way, Kauai is my favorite HI island. The views and scenery are just incredible!

Beautiful

By Gallopingghost_77 |

The drive is great. The views great. We loved it and got some great pictures to take home with us. Highly recommend this place.

What a view!

By Donrohan |

Gorgeous view of the Napoli Coast from above. Near the end of the road in the Koke’e State Park. Don’t just stop to view the beautiful Waimea Canyon. Keep going another ten miles or so to the look out. Stop for a sandwich at the Koke’e Lodge. Sometimes the view is obstructed by cloud cover, but that can be just as beautiful an experience.

Phenomenal Panoramic View

By getreal2me99 |

Coming here is breathtaking. At first, it was overcast then a little drizzle. Well, it's Kauai, so expect rain everyday. Once we reach the lookout, thanked God, weather is cooperating. The sun came out and gave us a phenomenal panoramic view of Kalalau lookout. It was very stunning to see the valley and also see waterfall on the backdrop. Even though, I was not able to see the native I'iwi bird that feeds on the Ohia blossoms, though I saw couple Nene's (endemic to Hawaii) that flew over the lookout. Due to the ongoing COVID-19, there weren't much people here. You have the place to yourself much. And when we were here, there were only 2 other families that came from other island that were visiting the park. Ample parking where you are greeted with wild chickens roaming around. And yes, chickens are all over in the island of Kauai. I adore this place so much because of its natural beauty. Highly recommend to add on your bucket list when visiting Kauai.

So breath-taking!

By abird55 |

It's hard to describe in words how beautiful this panoramic view is... we drove as far as is possible on Waimea Canyon Rd. and then hiked a mile or so to see the north shore of the island. Cliffs are steep, so not recommended for small children. At this level, we were on par with the clouds, but lucked out with a clear day (most days on Kauai were clear, if there is rain, it usually doesn't last for long). We were there in the late afternoon, so next time would go earlier in the day to hike more. Bring a picnic and savour the once-in-a-lifetime view!

Breathtaking View

By AllisonBA78 |

Go early to reduce the chances of heavy fog hiding the view. Bring a sweater as it can get chilly, especially considering the tropical climate on the island. BEAUTIFUL!!

Gorgeous view!

By VeeBuz |

We drove up to the lookout point. The view was breathtaking- the variety of shades of blue & green were stunning!! We wanted to come back because it was so gorgeous

Just a pit stop while looking for a good trail!!

By Nicole R |

This place was just average. Some beautiful views but TONS of people trying to see the same thing. We stopped here in hopes to find a ridge top trail but were surely disappointed. However off in the most right corner of the fenced in area we climber over the fence and followed a 15 step trail to a point where you could see the waterfalls between the ridges.

Stunning views

By BenjyBear |

Stunning views out across the valleys. Plenty of parking and well worth a visit. The scenery is amazing. Can also walk some trails from here.

On a Clear Day..wow

By janicepk |

We were lucky to tackle this lookout on a clear day and were not disappointed. We felt like we were on top of the world. Views were amazing.

Stunning, worth the drive

By Dan E. |

One of the most amazing views from the canyon. Get a feel for the NaPali coast without a helicopter or cruise. Views of the mountains & sea from up in among the clouds. Seeing fog rolling in from the canyon helped us understand how this was all created. Incredible natural landscape!

Located at mile (18) on HwY 550

By Travel_Guy_2015 |

This lookout is near the end of Waimea Canyon Road HwY 550. From this vista, you can view the Napali Coast and the expanse of the deep blue sea

Be Careful When it is Raining

By Trvlchic5 |

We drove up to the lookout and was hoping to take in some of the beautiful views. Unfortunately, when we got to the top it had been raining so much that you couldnt see a thing and the trails were washed out. We watched some people attempt it but slipped and fell injuring themselves. Recommendation is to check the weather before going up to the lookout and be smart about your decisions.

Be patient

By hjmartin24 |

When we arrived in the morning, it was pouring and completely cloud/fog covered. We’d done our research and knew we could wait it out and see if the clouds lifted. Sure enough, around 10 am, the clouds suddenly moved and it was all blue sky.

It’s incredible to see just the clouds and not be able to see what’s right behind it. The views are breathtaking and pictures don’t do them justice.

Kalalau is beautiful, but make sure you don’t miss Pu’u O Kila just up the road, too.

Straight up Waimea canyon until road ends

By Scuba_Divers |

It is a long drive from anywhere on the island, except Kalaheo or Waimea. Morning is supposedly the best weather, but worst traffic and higher number of visitors. A good game plan is to go straight to the Kalalau lookout and then do the other lookouts on your way back down. Pretty terrific view from all of them but only Kalalau looks out over Na Pali coast. I can't express enough how far it is to drive and the winding roads. If you have time - definitely do a hike. The hikes that end over looking the Na Pali coast don't have better or worse views than Kalalau - but after a strenuous hike - you'll appreciate the view more.

Wow, just wiw

By Mark P |

We were very fortunate to arrive at the lookout just before the clouds rolled in. Views are staggering and a rainbow added to the mystique. Many TA comments mention to just wait it out if you can and hope the clouds break. We added a hike on the Pihea trail and were lucky with a second look albeit briefly. Just beautiful and well cared for area.

stunning view

By KieuK2014 |

It is a stunning view, the ocean, the mountain and the valley all in one place. We wish we had lunch there, but we had only a few hours to explore the whole park.

Beautiful!

By Allison P |

The drive up the mountain is maybe 17 miles or so but it takes longer than expected. There are many great places to pull over on the way and take some great pictures including the Waimea canyon lookout. My husband had a great time riding up the mountain with a good playlist!

We were so happy we drove here.

By tripleforkshunting |

We were so happy we drove here. The roads were great and the reward was amazing. This is an area not many people will ever see. I am glad we were one of them.

Triple Forks Hunting

The Kalalau Valley is one of the most beautiful places

By Sadie H |

I agree with other reviewers to continue on up the road to the second lookout for a better view. But the Kalalau Valley is easily one of the most beautiful places on earth. I recommend to get there early since the clouds tend to build up throughout the day. I also hiked a portion of the Phiea Vista Trail for more views of the valley.
I traveled as a solo female and felt very safe and comfortable throughout this activity.

Loved this stop

By tedact |

This was an enjoyable stop. The parking was easy and accessible and the walk was brief. The longer you stay , the more the views change. The day that we went was clear and a beautiful breeze.

Not always any visibility

By Sue M |

It took two visits before we finally got to see the beautiful view at this lookout. First time completely covered in fog/mist and you couldn't see over the railing. Second time was beautifully clear and we got to see the magnificent view of the canyon and ocean. Worth the trip.

Need luck to see the valley

By Wenqing L |

The weather was very cloudy and even drizzled on the day we visited the lookout. So at first sight it was pure cloud, all we could see is whiteness. But we did get lucky that day, as wind blew away the cloud and we saw the Na Pali coast below. It's an incredible experience to see the blue coast and green/red valley show themselves from the dense cloud. Remember to bring thick coat as it's really cold on mountain top.

A good day out!

By dcam45 |

The drive up was gorgeous and we stop along the way with a picnic, and took lots of photos of the canyon. We'd been before, so were keen to share the summit view with our good friends who'd traveled all the way from Australia to share it with us!! Have a look!! ha ha... good to go with forgiving friends, as one never knows what to expect on a November day in Kauai. The last hundred meters was completely socked in with fog ... all the way to the coast.

beautiful

By David C |

Beautiful views of the valley. Definitely worth the nice drive to see the beautiful view. Don't miss this one.

Sacred Place

By Stephanie W |

For me, this lookout is sacred. It will awaken you spirtually. See my more detail remarks under Puuo Kilo Lookout, entitled "Spirtual." Puuo Kilo Lookout (which is adjacent to this lookout) is a more in depth view of this lookout.

One of the most stunning views in all of Hawai'i

By Gary W |

If you've taken the time to get to Waimea Canyon, a definite must-see on Kauai, be sure to drive a few miles further on to this absolutely gorgeous viewpoint high above the Napali Coast. It can be cloudy, but if you get a reasonably clear day you can see Ni'ihau and far beyond. Free parking, no admission, and a short uphill walk to the viewpoint with a promenade to find your perfect picture.

Wowzers!

By Peter Kathy E |

This view just makes your jaw drop, one of the most spectacular we have seen anywhere. We suggest an early departure and drive past Waimea Canyon and straight to the Kalalau lookout as the cloud is likely to be less in the morning. You can check out the Canyon on your return trip.

Spectacular Views

By ROCtraveler30 |

This viewpoint, near the end of the road, affords the visitor truly spectacular views from high above the Napali coast. Adventurous folks can hike out on narrow knife-edge cliff trails for breathtaking views. Parking is abundant. Try to get here on a clear day as clouds often linger over the nearby mountain peaks.

Definitely worth the trip

By shawnpedersen |

Absolutely fantastic and worth the drive up. Drive is easy enough and the views are spectacular. We stayed for almost an hour enjoying the views and chilling.

Beautiful

By amesi |

The views are incredible as all the reviews say. I did not realize from photos that this Lookout is on a paved sidewalk with railings. This is a positive thing for some people, but I was expecting more of a surrounded-by-nature experience. I got that later when we hiked some of the trails.

We were at this Lookout around 9am. It was clear, but most of the Valley was still in the shadow, so my photos didn’t turn out quite as vibrant as others I’ve seen.

Nonetheless, and incredible sight and easily accessible!

Beautiful

By Traveloror |

A must see well worth the drive up the hill. Expect rain here and there. I would go all the way to the top and get a treat at the lodge

BREATHTAKING

By alexsept07 |

my favourite vista in all of Kauai. That actually might be a lie because the whole island is unreal but seriously must see I could look at this place all day long i love!!

Wow!

By Michelle D |

We drove up to the lookout as we had my 82 yr old grandmother with us. This was beautiful beyond words and can imagine the hike would have been worth it. The sky was so clear and the colors were so vibrant. Worth the drive!

Kalalau Lookout

By JaceeCo |

Nice location, but constantly fogged in. If you get lucky you may get a really nice view of the Na Pali Coastline. We unfortunately did not, so it was a lot of driving and a big disappointment.

Absolutely Breathtaking

By Lgebb |

It is the last stop on the way up the Waimai Canyon in Kauai. The first 2 Outlooks are of the Canyon which are so like the Grand Canyon but more colors with the rich green. But that last stop you can see the beginning of the Napoli coastline. Unbelievable. I could have stayed all day.

Great, Quick, Lookout

By Rodney B |

This is a great place to stop for a nice view of the Kalalau/Napali coast from above. We have often seen rainbows here. Great spot for pictures. There us a $10/vehicle & $5/person fee that is laid at a self kiosk and gives you access to anywhere in the park for one day. Beautiful views!

Just a taste of the magic of Kalalau

By Andy L |

From this view you can only begin to feel the true magical nature of the Kalalau Valley. From this vantage point is but one location to see the sights. Be sure to drive further along the highway to the second lookout. At times these lookouts can be clouded over.

Amazing view at the end of the road

By 02KJB |

Keep riving after Waimea Canyon and you will encounter another gorgeous view on Kauai. This valley is at the end of the drive and worth the extra 15 mins it takes to get there. Maybe bring a light jacket especially in Winter as the temperature can be chilly up there.

Fantastic views

By rockyjoe |

The Kalalau Lookout is located on the western coast of the island of Kauai and offers fantastic views of the Na Pali coastline. It is also located near mile marker 18 on the Kokee Road (Highway 550) in Kokee State Park. This is the 2nd to the last stop on the Highway. It takes a while to get there but the slow drive up the mountain is worth it.

I drove to this great spot with my wife on a Saturday morning on late January and really enjoyed the fantastic views of the Kalalau Valley and the coastline. At 4,000 feet this lookout is the highest point in Kauai that you can reach by car (you must hike if you want to go higher). The weather was perfect and we could see for miles.

Overall I really enjoyed stopping at this lookout and highly recommend it. This is a must see attraction on any Kauai vacation. Check the weather reports and try and pick a sunny day.

Stunning

By Smokytn98 |

Worth the drive. Go early. Clouds roll in and out all day so if its cloudy just wait about 15 minutes. I loved this area so much and after seeing the entire island I would easily say this was my favorite.

Get there early

By smileynvp |

The earlier you are, the more likely you are for a clear view. As the day goes on, the clouds tend to fill the valley. We came up here twice on our trip because the clouds filled the valley the first time we were there. The view is breath-taking. You can see all the way to the water. If there is no parking, just keep circling. People don't stay too long and stuff opens up rather quickly.

Wonderful hike

By Tony |

This was the best hike we did in Kauai. The views at the end of the lockout were incredible. The path was a little narrow at the end with large cliffs so not for those afraid of heights

Amazing Views

By Gus P |

Unbelievable natural beauty and a must see for the whole family. Hiking trails, breathtaking views and much more when visiting this venue. A "must see" when visiting this island.

Stunning Overview

By Mark A |

When we arrived at the lookout, the view was covered by clouds. A helpful local suggested we wait five minutes. The clouds moved and we got a marvelous view.

Worth the drive

By DragonDad |

The first planned destination after after arriving on the island. The views were breathtaking. A must is hiking, whatever you can on the Pihea Trail, while there. It is not a stroll in the park, though. Be prepared to climb a little, and expect wet areas in random places. No visit to the island is complete, if you don't go here.

Heaven on Earth

By Ashley M |

To say this is breathtaking is an understatement - it is the most beautiful place I have ever been. Well worth the drive into the mountains.

Excellent View

By BertoNunes |

Without a crazy hike or a helicopter tour this is a really great view. Parking can be very tight try to go early. Also, be aware that in winter is can be challenging to get a clear day (low clouds). Keep an eye out on the weather and know that it can change at an instant. We went up one day and the visibility was no more than 100 yards. As our trip went on we kept an eye out on the weather and just looking up at the mountain. One day it looked clear and we moved out activities for that day to go up to Kalalau lookout. And it paid off.

Spectacular View

By Jason F |

When we arrived we were completely surrounded and up in the clouds which was cool. We didn’t think it would make for good pictures until another traveler told us to hang out for a few minutes and they were right, the cloud pushed through leaving a fantastic view of the Napali coast!

Bit of a drive, worth it for the view

By BarbeeAL |

After the canyon overlook, take the time to venture to the end of the road and be treated to the valley leading out to the Napali Coast.

Cloudy

By Ruth D |

It's the last stop on Waimea Canyon Drive. We heard it had wonderful views but it was cloudy when we went so there wasn't much to see. We waited about 15 minutes but it didn't clear. If you are taking the Pihea Trail it starts here.

Incredible views and beautiful canyon vistas

By Brian D |

The weather was a little rough, but we gave the Lookout a shot, and had a great time. The Na Pali coast is amazing no matter what angle you take to see it.

Absolutely the best hike ever!

By Kevin K |

The hike on this lookout is not advertised! Walk to the left behind the green fence and you are on your way! It takes about an hour each way and the view are breathtaking! Don’t worry about the fog because it fades away at the end which is where it matters! I would do this every day! It is not for the rookie joker though, if it’s muddy it could be very challenging too!

Mesmerizing views

By jwalters002 |

The views of the Napali coast along with the Pacific and the island of Ni’ihau in the distance is spectacular on a clear day. The temps are about 10-15 degrees cooler up here than in Waimea but it was perfect for soaking in the great views.

Incredible vistas

By James T |

Ok...full disclosure. When I finally got to the last lookout the clouds and rain had rolled in and all we could see was a white mist. However, the trip up to the lookout was spectacular to say the least. There are numerous pull outs where you can stop and check out the views. I live in Arizona so I'm used to seeing canyons, LARGE canyons. Some even told me before I left not to bother with this excursion as it was only a little canyon compared to the Grand Canyon. I'm glad I didn't listen to those dummy's. This was a spectacular outing. Just check out the photos. It was drizzly and misty but that actually added to some of the photos. Could there be a more beautiful place on earth. Hard to imagine. Don't pass this little trip up.

Beautiful view!

By nwoods159 |

We drove to the first viewpoint on the canyon road and stopped. I am guessing the guy we talked to was a native Hawaiian. He told us to drive all the way to the end of the road first to catch the view before the clouds rolled in. We did as he said and were rewarded with the most beautiful views. Then on the way back down we stopped at the overlooks that we missed but the clouds did roll in just as he said. Go early to beat the clouds!

Morning may be the better time to go

By VinaM154 |

I read after we arrived that afternoons have more cloud cover and that was our experience. All we could see was clouds, a blank slate. But the informational placards were very interesting explaining how Hawaiians used to live on that area, what they grew, etc. Then we saw the Na Pali coast later in our trip from the sea, so don't feel we missed much from the upper lookout.

Nice stop in Waimea Canyon

By Carolyn P |

Was a nice road trip from Princeville. It was a little foggy when we first got there but we waited for the clearing and was very pretty.

Big costs for a quick peep

By Debbie C |

I have come to this lookout numerous times and it is breath-taking if there’s no fog. However, they now charge $10 per car plus $5 per person to take a look. Honestly you’re not there more than 20 minutes. A lot of money after a long ride. Plus there’s not a mention of the cost until you’re parked and walking up to the lookout.

OMG

By Ken V |

Well I have never been to the Grand Canyon but I have a hard time imagining that it could touch this view. Much better than Waimea Canyon which is on the same road. This is one of the wettest places on Earth, and today our view was clear and beautiful.

Amazing!!

By Cheryl H |

A little steep to walk up to the main lookout, but it's smooth and very doable for a 68 year old with a bad knee!! It was clear, and we couldn't tell where the sky ended and the water began.

Sunset at Kalalau

By Michael H |

Arrived 15 min before sunset - worth the wait for glorious sunset, even with fog creeping up the Na Pali mountains.

Na Pali Coast From the Top of Kaua'i; WOW!

By KLH1956 |

We first traveled up to the lookout in 2007 and now ten years later it's just as great as it was before. We've had great timing. being there when the weather was sunny and therefore the view was clear all the way down to the coast.
The area and view has a relaxing effect on you, just what you want when you're on holidays.

Take a sun umbrella and a picnic basket with you and enjoy the day.

Another great view.

By Trav_LN_now |

Started working our way back from the end of 550. Plenty of parking. Bathrooms. There are trails to go down. We chose not to on this stop. Amazing view. What more can I say.

Valley view

By orcasgal |

By winter - resident warning that this is the first lookout to cloud up and vog in, we went there early, about 9:30am. It was a bit hazy, but on the way there, the south winds were already bringing obscuring vog to the southern lookouts. Otherwise, it was a perfect day. It is rugged land with sharp vertical ridges, and not much color beyond the shades of browns and rusts of rocks and the multitudinous variety of greens in the vegetation. It has a calming beauty in its vastness.

Visibility of 15 feet, but the drive up is worth it anyway

By Kurt_in_CLE |

I've been here a number of times, almost every time I've been to Kauai, and I know the view is spectacular, but we could only see about 15 feet on this particular visit. However, the drive up is just as scenic and the road has been improved so much over the years that it's a dream to drive it now. The weather was clear and sunny in Waimea at the beginning of the road, and the views into the Waimea canyon were clear on the way up. Make every stop for the views going up because they were almost all socked in with clouds on the way down.

Beautiful!

By jttravis |

Plan a long day to make the most out of this trip. Leave early morning to drive to the top and get the best pictures. Clouds move in later in the day and you will miss a lot of good pictures,

goos to excellent depending on the weather

By traveler987Napa |

This is an outstanding vantage point to see the Grand Canyon of Hawaii. Look nearly straight down to see the lush folage in the canyon and the great rock formations. Excellent safe viewing areas. Only problem is that is=t can be socked in sometimes. The last two times we went once we saw a little, the other times almost nothing. And the frist time was VERY cold up there. Take a sweater for sure.

Viewpoint that charges and may be cloudy

By Guido C |

This Waimea Canyon viewpoint charges US$10 for parking and $5 per person even if it's cloudy. On the right side you can see a waterfall.

A Must see

By connieh2 |

Visit here every time we go... amazing views, hiking trails for all levels, just research before you head out on a trail from here. At the very least, do the drive thru the canyon- you won't regret it.

Breathtakingly Beautiful!

By leddebby |

Not sure that I truly understood the expression "breathtakingly beautiful" until I saw Kalalau from this vista. It is just too beautiful for words!

Beautiful, especially with a rainbow!

By socal13 |

We were able to see and photograph these beautiful mountains and valley from a doors-off helicopter and from the Kalalau lookout. The view is spectacular. We had a very clear day until some clouds came in and started to hover over the valley. We decided to wait it out, hoping for a clearing again, when all of a sudden a huge rainbow appeared that spanned the entire valley. What a beautiful sight to see, and photograph.

Nice landscape

By slavasaxa |

The top offers a magnificent view. Better to go there in clear weather. Rugged cliffs - are only in Hawaii

A Must Do!

By Amy K |

I'm giving this 5 stars because I think the view would be breathtaking but the day we took the drive in Waimea Canyon, Kalalau lookout was completely socked in. It was still pretty cool to be up in the clouds. We were fortunate enough to do a helicopter tour a couple days prior so saw it by air and it was stunning. It was the only place that was cloud covered in the Waimea/Koke'e State park drive so you may not know until you get there - so just go!

Awesome

By LoveTraveling2737 |

At the end of the road, well almost the end, is this look-out. Definitely worth the drive. It was quite cloudy and rainy when we were there but it would clear up for a few minutes at a time and WOW what a view! So serene.... A must see!

A must see

By myhiddenspa |

This is our second time here. They are a few things that are a must do always, and some things you will do once and done. This is a must do, always.

Foggy and rainy

By Richard j |

We were unfortunately prevented from seeing anything from Kalalau Lookout because of fog and drizzle, the entire valley was cloaked in heavy haze, so thick you couldn’t make out anything.

Disappointing... Had been looking forward to it (especially after seeing Na Pali on a helicopter tour), also meant we couldn’t enjoy any of the trails in the area. Too treacherous.

Wow.

By Susan A |

Best view ever. You may get stuck in the clouds/fog but just wait. It will pass. No words to describe it.

Beautiful view of the coast

By Chris H |

Drive a little bit further past Waimea Canyon and you will be presently surprised at the view with this lookout. Beautiful view of the Na Poli coast that gives a view of almost suspended clouds over the Pacific.

Stunning views!

By JoyfulTraveler7 |

You can get to the Kalalau Lookout by car by driving through Waimea Canyon to the end. The view is always gorgeous but if you are lucky enough to hit it on a clear day where the sun is out, and the clouds are just right, it is absolutely stunning! When we were there, we saw several photographers trying to get that perfect shot. It is so beautiful that it almost doesn't look real.

lookout point wow

By DoctorPhenomenon |

Breathtaking! Elevation 3400 square feet. Absolutely magical. Words cannot describe this sacred space. A must visit when in Kauai. The ride up the mountain is about a half hour but do stop at the scenic parking spots. When you reach the top bathrooms are available, but no gift shop or shopping of any kind. NO CHARGE to enter the lookout. All the beauty is free for you and your family or friends to enjoy.

Don't miss it!!!

By Gitta B |

We've come to Kauai for more than a decade, but never miss out on going there! Best seen on the way to Waimea Canyon on a mostly clear day for the views. But once at the lookout - the view changes from low clouds and fog to clear within minutes! Be patient!

And there is one more lookout beyond not to be missed - with a hike into red mud country! We were wondering where all these people came from, covered with red mud up their derrieres. After all - Kauai is one of the wettest spots on earth - and the higher you go, the wetter it gets! But it's a "warm wet" LOL. Might want to bring one of those cheap thin plastic ponchos along though.

Great look down at the Na poli coast

By shaun d |

If you are up sight seeing in the canyon anyways why not go a little further and take a peek down at the end of the Kalalau trail! Me and my wife had rented a jeep through costco (saving us a ton of money) so we drove up one day to see the end of the trail we were about to hike. I remember thinking "that doesn't look like a hard hike" possibly the dumbest thing i have ever thought.

Wait 10 minutes if there is fog!

By Becky R |

When we arrived the entire area was enveloped in heavy fog. We waited about 10 minutes and it cleared to a breath taking view! The fog rolls in and quickly rolls out so be patient and you will see the Na Pali Coast in all it's splendor. We also hiked the trail which starts at the lookout. It was very muddy and steep in a few places so ensure you have the correct shoes and water. It took us about 90 mins round trip but we also stopped to take in the view several times and take pictures.

Spectacular site

By jammerspot |

A place where the sky meets the ocean. When the clouds are limited the merger is complete. Towering green cliffs of mountains rise from the ocean floor. Recommend an early start arriving by 10 am or earlier before clouds move into the area. An experience you will not forget.
Enjoyed by everyone. Must travel by car or van. Large buses do not travel the road up.

Worth the drive

By DP-Star |

Insider info, if it's completely covered in fog when you get there, just wait 5-10 minutes it often changes. We were there fro 15 minutes and the view pretty much completely changed 3 times

All we saw were clouds,

By travelwhere |

We were told to wait awhile because the clouds do move. It didn’t for us. I have no doubt that it’s fabulous under the clouds! My picture is some greenery & clouds!

Super views

By P.ark |

It is a drive to get there and we’ll worth it. Great views from this lookout. I highly recommend this.

The end of the earth!

By Susan B |

SO stunning and worth the trip for sure. The parking can be a pain at the end of the road where it takes off from so go early in the morning is my best suggestion.

Take a lot of photos!

By SHZ102012 |

Kakalau Valley is best viewed from Pu'u O Kila Lookout (pass mile 18). Rainbows are frequently in the Valley on a rain-and-shine day!

Wonderful spot!!

By Laura L |

You pay $10 per car and $5 pp at a parking lot kiosk, which is good for all your stops, and it’s WELL worth it.

We ended up doing an “off grid” hike from this spot that was one od the highlights of our entire trip, albeit sketchy. :)

Great spot for a picnic lunch and a top notch view of the valley!

Nice relaxing ride.

By augustleroy |

This doesn't require a lot of effort. The drive up to the top of the canyon is easy and slow. There are abundant pull overs that offer canyon views without a lot of climbing about. The Lookout is terrific and worth the short up hill trek. On the way down from the lookout is a pleasant alpine valley with a nice little cafe.

Unbelievable views, but do some of the nearby (hidden!) trail for even better!

By Andrew K |

The Kalalau Lookout provided the best views anywhere on the island, with the least amount of effort. If, like us, you couldn't bring yourself to spend $150+ per person for a boat cruise/helicopter ride of the Na Pali coast, this is your only real chance of seeing it!

We headed to the lookout early as this is when there is the least chance of cloud coverage. Unfortunately when we arrived at around 9am there were still some clouds, but you could literally watch them rolling in, then out, then in, then out. Sunny windows come and go in minutes, so stand around for a while if it's currently cloudy as it will surely be blown inland by the ocean breeze at any time.

When we were there, I noticed some people accessing a trail to the left of the lookout through a gate in the fencing. Curious, I thought perhaps there are better views there, so I followed them. The trail leads down somewhat steeply to some precarious lookouts, but the views were clearly better than the official lookout offered. I asked somebody how far this trail went and they said it was a short hike, so I ran to my car, grabbed my hiking shoes and followed the trail.

I later found out this was called the Kalepa Ridge trail and can honestly say it was the best thing I did in Kauai! The trail is precarious as it follows a ridge line basically the entire time, with a sheer drop and definite death most of the trail. Luckily it was dry and I am a competent hiker, so I never felt uneasy, but if it were slippery I wouldn't have done it, nor would I if I had children or was even remotely immobile. If you are an inexperienced hiker, you may find it too risky and turn back, which is fine! The views at the very start of the trail are still amazing, but if you can go to the very end you will be treated to SPECTACULAR views of the Na Pali coast (see photo attached).

The hike is actually short, perhaps an hour to the end and another hour back if you take your time (which you will due to the views!). It is all downhill on the way out, and uphill on the way back. There is little shade, so bring a hat, water and prepare to sweat, A LOT!

I can honestly say that while the Kalalau Lookout was amazing, the Kalepa Ridge trail provided the most stunning views I have ever seen for little effort. Most hikes for those views take hours and involve serious climbs. This was easy!

Kalalau Lookout

By wally410 |

Perfect day with unlimited visibility! Absolutely stunning view into Na’pali coast.
Been here several times and weather did not cooperate. Well worth the time with spectacular view. Only couples miles from Pu’Uokila lookout one of the wettest places on earth. Easy access to all.

A long drive for a possibility

By Lily W |

This is a lovely spot, even if the clouds cover most of the view. It feels like a different dimension.

If you have time for only one thing on this island - this is it

By MustHaveSleep |

This is the most impressive view on the island. I stood at this lookout for 30min taking it in and every person who walked up for a look while i was there either gasped or said wow. It does not disappoint.

Amazing views

By scsprague |

We were based near-by, so we got to check out the lookout several times. As expected, there were often clouds limiting the view, but we were lucky enough to see it in excellent lighting on our third visit. But even the clouded vistas are inspiring.

Beautiful lookout

By keithlky |

This place is truly beautiful. It is so colourful and just simply a feast for the eyes! A must visit when in Kauai.

Great, but keep going

By MD_T0urist |

First of all, the TripAdvisor map location for this is wrong, even though you can find the lookout on the same map by continuing north on the same road until you get to the Koke’e State Park. The view is gorgeous, but there are many overgrown bushes along the viewing platform that it is hard for photos. In my opinion, Pu’u O Kila lookout one mile up the road has much more open viewing of the Na Pali Coast. Get a few photos at Kalālau look out, and plan to spend more time at Pu’u O Kila.

One of the most spectacular views

By Colin Archibald |

The Kalalau Lookout is one of the primary reasons for going up Waimea Canyon. The views are really beautiful. We had some rain, but it did not spoil the view. The rain created waterfalls on the side of the Cliffs.

Costly 15 Minutes Parking

By Walter241 |

Have been there before but this time there is a hefty fee for parking and entry. The lookout is a 15 minute thing. Either it is clear and you take some pictures or it is socked in with clouds and there is nothing to see. There are no activities here. To be more likely to get a good view arrive there before 10AM.
The parking fee now is $10 per car PLUS $5 per person. That is ridiculous for a 15 minute "view". I will likely not go back again.
Later in the visit to Kauai a local told me that it is for all park spots and not just the one and is good for the whole day. A bit better but still very steep.

Absolutely STUNNING views!

By USMC_Recon_2003 |

This place has the most breath taking views imaginable! It simply leaves you in awe at the wonder and beauty of nature! It gave me a new appreciation for my Creator as well! I HIGHLY recommend this place for anyone who appreciates pure, surreal beauty!

It's worth the drive!!!!

By robcau |

The road from Waimea up through Waimea Canyon and Koke'e parks is fantastic. Be sure to drive all the way to the end to get to Kalalau lookout. The views are incredible. Along the way, be sure to stop at all the official (and unofficial...as in the side of the road) other lookouts. We spent about 3.5 hours total including lunch at the Koke'e lodge round trip from Waimea and it was worth every second. Try to go on a dry day (or in the morning) when there are less clouds.

Worthwhile stop

By Steve G |

I figure if you are already in the area to hike the Canyon Trail, take a few minutes to drive up the road first for the Kalalau Lookout. Easy parking, easy access, and incredible views.

Majestic beauty beyond words ..

By Ryan A |

A must see, nature at its best! Only God can design something so beautiful...it is really breathtaking, you have to see this lookout..Kauii is not complete without coming up here

If you can see it, it awesome.

By Wend Jay |

This place had a very gorgeous view. However, be careful when you go. on the day we went, do to the rain and tropical feel, it was covered in clouds. I had a heard time seeing the landscape, only through few brief glimpses. What I did see was amazing. Just keep it in mind before you go.

Best view on the island

By Paul S |

I stopped here two days of the five I was on Kauai. The first day there were too many clouds. The second day was great and I was able to catch a rainbow coming over the mountains.

Best view on the island

By mchowell73 |

This overlook is so beautiful, we had to see it twice! Once in the afternoon and again at sunset. Just using my apple phone, I got postcard perfect photos. It is truly a breathtaking spot!

take photos and enjoy the amazing view

By Fran Z |

This lookout and others along canyon road are well worth a stop to take photos. Steep cliffs with gorgeous greens and browns set against a blue sky and finally, the Pacific Ocean. awesome!

Do not miss this stop!

By Kristen L |

Gorgeous views - do not miss it! Lots of trails for hiking too if you're feeling adventurous! It was worth the drive!

Breathtaking!

By scubabum |

We arrived early enough that it hadn't fogged in yet. A gorgeous view of the Na Pali coast almost as good as seeing it from the helicopter and the sea.

An incredibly beautiful view

By Max |

Stop over here if you’re seeing the canyon. You don’t need more than 15 minutes to take in the gorgeous view of the Na Pali coast, and you already need to drive down the Canyon anyway, what do you have to lose?

My favorite place on the island.

By tyrion397 |

After a long, winding drive up the mountain, this lookout offers stunning views of the Na Pali coast. We also hiked the trail this hooks up with and that was a blast. Hiking the trail can be tricky, but if you are in ok health and enjoy climbing you shouldn't have any issues. It may rain so be prepared, and wear clothes you aren't afraid to get a little dirty. Clouds can roll in sometimes and obstruct your view, so take a break and wait it out till it clears. It is worth it.

Vacation

By Laurie H |

Traveled on a family vacation to Hawaii and we drove up to this look out. Has amazing views of the ocean and the beautiful lands.

Magnificent Kalalau Valley overlook

By Jackie M |

A visit to Waimea Canyon must include time to see the magnificent Kalalau Valley. This spectacular overlook is likely the "crown jewel" of the Garden Isle. From this vantage point, you will be in awe of the 2000 ft high cliffs surrounding the valley like the walls of a natural cathedral. Your breath catches as you gaze into a vast and fertile valley.

Because the beauty of this spectacular panorama is beyond description, it can only truly be appreciated by being there. So plan to spend the whole day exploring this part of Kauai - Waimea Canyon, Koke'e State Park and Kalalau Lookout. When we visit this area, we have learned to get an early start to the drive and to pass by the Waimea Canyon overlooks on the way up until we reach the second of two Kalalau Valley overlooks. Arriving there just before mid-morning usually reduces the chance that clouds, mists, and fogs that tend to build throughout the day will settle into and obscure the view.

Once you've driven to the end of the road and soaked in and snapped photos of this wondrous spot, you should stop at the first overlook to view Kalalau Valley from a different vantage point. This overlook stop offers restroom facilities and is also a great spot to enjoy a picnic. Enjoy!

driving to Kalalau super

By wode47 |

we drove to the Kalalau on a beautiful day, but the best was that we stopped at a very famouus Kauaian Festival which is celebrated to honour Queen Lilli's presence. Many hundreds of people most Hawaian from all Islands were there and see the beautiful Hula dancing of several groups and also singers all in Hawaian. It is a festival for the Hawaian and no touristic show, it was just great to be part of it. After that we went to the museum and thant to Kalalau. As I said before all with beautiful wheather, but when we arrived up there it was just too misty to see anything of the coast. What I want to say, even if you have super weather down at the ocean and in the valley, you cannot be sure to see much at the lookout. I suggest you have to see the wheather forecast both in Waimean and Hanalei, if both say sunny you have a good chance that you see the beautiful Napali Coast. By the way it is also worth going by boat.

Best views in Kauai

By E_B_Hollingsworth |

Cannot share enough how beautiful the views are from this lookout. Just mind blowing! The lookouts in these parks can be a day or afternoon trip with or without hiking.

Stunning View

By Chris A |

Our first day, we got here in the midst of the clouds and saw nothing. We returned early the next morning and drove straight to the top. The view from this look out is great but the view from the next lookout uphill at the end at Pu'u o Kila Lookout is better. The Kalulau Valley is overwhelming as it drops off to the coast far below. The scale is so large that the details are lost.

An absolute must with an insiders tip

By Russell3939 |

My best tip was given by a local is to be to this lookout by 10:30a. The clouds rolled in by 11 and you could not see a thing. The views were once in a lifetime. This is not to be missed.

Breathtaking view

By Coldings |

Astonishing view over the green, fertile Kalalau Valley. If you like what you see, you can drive another 1 km to the end of the paved road and hike thePihea Vista trail in 2-3 hours, depending on you condition and how muddy it is. This will give you outstanding views on the valley from many more angles.

Long drive, beautiful view

By Kimberley42 |

The view can be really gorgeous, if you are lucky. We had a stormy day, so the view was quite limited by clouds and fog. But, it was ethereal and lovely. Next time we hope to see the Napali Coast.

AMAZING Views!

By Kathleen |

AMAZING views, if the skies cleared. Waited an hour the first time and just saw thick fog, but came back after lunch and was blown away by the clear views, so suggest trying multiple times if you can. Road up is tough - tough driving up through the Waimea canyon (very steep) and the road between the lodge and the lookout has a TON of potholes. Lots of people did it with smaller cars but I was thankful I had an SUV. Definitely recommend the trek up!

Beautiful view of the ocean and Napali coastline

By mariedesjardins |

Waited to view 10 minutes since it had just rained, but when it cleared it was well worth the wait. Breathtaking views of the ocean and Napali coastline. Had tried to do Kalalau trail in December to beach from Haena, but due to weather report changed plans and only managed a short distance. Was pleased to discover this lookout and see some of the beauty I'd missed especially because the roads up north to Haena had been badly damaged and probably won't be repaired fully until next year according to locals.

A must see!

By Jeaneth G |

Worth the drive. Be aware that there’s a $10 car fee and $5 each per person fee. Don’t hesitate. Go and see it. Sooooo beautiful!

A MUST SEE-KEEP DRIVING

By NinjaAisha™ |

My photos do not do it justice. It was amazing! A must see, keep driving! I kept telling the kids, almost there. 😊
Bring drinking water, food, sunblock & bug spray. Don't forget your camera.
Aloha from Kauai🤙

Spectacular...but timing is everything!

By beachNsunseeker |

iWe visited Waimea Canyon and stopped along the way. When we arrived here, there were only clouds. We decided to come back on our final morning in Kauai and drove up here super early...we were amazed by the views we were now able to see! We had no idea how beautiful. We recommend driving all the way to the end of the road to see this first to try to beat the clouds.

WORTH IT!!!!

By Krista M |

This view is unbeatable. It was breathtaking and definitely the most beautiful vista of our entire vacation!

Keep driving past all Waimea canyon lookouts to the end of the road

By TravelTea |

Rather than stop along the way at the various Waimea canyon lookouts, we decided to go all the way to the end of the road (550) & then back track to the lookouts & hiking trails. We left Kapaa around 6:45am and got to the lookout around 8:30am. We were the only car on the road up and at the lookout. It was a bit cloudy; but the view of the NaPali coastline is beautiful. There is a very nice (clean) restroom there. The drive is full of curves, so if you are prone to car-sickness (sit in the front or be the driver). Some lanes are very narrow and sometimes 1 lane only going to the Kalalau lookout; so be careful of on-coming traffic and drive slowly around the blind curves.

Nice views, but beware of the fees

By Breton S |

The beautiful view is truly amazing. However, beware of the fee to see the lookouts up in the area. I was surprised.

This is a beautiful drive to see the View out toward Ocean

By jscriv2017 |

There are several look out stops along the way. At the end of the trail there are venders with fresh fruit and gifts as well as information. IT is worth the drive and the view. Even better, take a boat and see it from the Ocean looking up.

Breathtaking View!

By travelinggrandma67 |

It was very hard to tell where the sky ends and the ocean begins since they meet and are the same color. You're looking down on parts of the beautiful NaPali Coast. Absolutely breathtaking!

Breathtaking view

By NN41 |

Amazing view of the Napali coast from the land, well worth the long drive to get to the lookout. Very patch cell phone service

Cloudy but still amazing

By Dian H |

Some people may be lucky to get amazing view from here. It was cloudy when I was there, so we cannot see the canyon and the sea. However the cloudy view still looks fantastic and pretty.

Stunning!!

By steveenelms |

Well worth the long, winding drive up the mountain. Just be sure to go in the morning. The clouds roll in by lunchtime and you can't see a thing after that. Oh, and part of the road was TERRIBLE on the drive up there. FULL of potholes, so you have be be careful when other cars are coming down.

Absolute bliss

By Kasha |

Place is incredible and it is a must on the trip, before you will pass a canyon that is amazing as well but the views that are awaiting in lookout for you will take your breath away -overlooking incredible NaPali coast is like looking into a Jurassic Park.

Got Here... Could not see, the dang clouds!

By km24800 |

Made it to the end of the road, but could not see the ocean. Bummer, hope to catch the amazing view next trip out.

The last time we went, we could see everything, the mountains, the vast blue ocean, it was truly an amazing view. Worth the drive to the end of the road.

We had very few folks up on the road this trip, maybe they knew the clouds were coming in, and decided not to try it.

Nothing but fog when we went

By Mitch M |

If you go, try to check beforehand for rain/fog conditions. When we went it was fully covered in fog so we couldn't see anything from the lookout.

Kalalau Lookout - Great on a Clear Day!

By P51rayf |

We made the drive through Waimea Canyon all the way to the Kalalau Lookout - Great on a Clear Day! The drive was excellent, but when we arrived at Kalalau Lookout all clouds! Next time we would make the trip before noon!

A Gorgeous & Peaceful View

By TheBoujCrew |

I will always be SOO grateful for the reviews that I read. Someone recommended driving straight to Kalalau Lookout (the top of Waimea Canyon) then stop at various points on your way down. This helps you avoid the crowd, as many people stop on their way up. Plus, it is SO serene and peaceful to visit Kalalau with not many people there. There were still a few people when we arrived (not entirely secluded), but I am grateful. Many offered to take photos of one another. One gentleman also instructed us to just wait for the fog to clear - which was great. So, if you get up here and can't see much, the fog may clear eventually. It took maybe 5-10 minutes for us. However, once the dense fog moved in, it didn't really clear. Many people started their hikes from here, we were not prepared to hike this day, so we didn't get to check it out!

There is plenty of parking here along with a restroom. There was toilet paper in the stalls, but most of the public "parks" in Hawaii have stalls, toilet paper and a faucet, but no soap. Pu'u O Kila Lookout is just around the corner from here, so worth a stop if you're already up there!

Gorgeous!

By Leigh D |

On two trips to Kuaui we have found this spot to be thrilling! Just a gorgeous view! This second trip it I should more fenced than it was some time ago but it is still beautiful and worth the drive. Highly recommended!

breathtaking!

By harbrsl |

late afternoon sun, clouds rolling over and adding drama to an already incredible view was just spectacular. i stared at the view for a very long time. mesmerizing.

Amazing

By Dana S |

If you come here you'll know why people rank Kauai as their favorite island. This view is absolutely stunning, absolutely breathtaking and absolutely amazing. Even the toughest critics would love this place- it's incredible!!!

Breathtaking

By ECJ1968 |

Another stop on our day tour around the island. The views were magnificent and we even got to find out about radar installations on the mountain here.

Beautiful Kalalau Valley

By Ailton007 |

The journey is already amazing driving up Highway 550 and stopping at plenty of lookouts on the way but up at Kalalau Lookout, it's really breathtaking. We hoped for a clear day for views and while we did experience clouds rolling in (after all, it's one of the wettest spots on earth), the combination of sun, wind and rain made up for a beautiful rainbow that stretched from the cliffs to the ocean. Gushing waterfalls can be seen as well if you walk the trail further down or just from far atop the lookout. Absolutely worth it!

So beautiful it almost doesn't look real.

By Heather H |

The Kalalau lookout is a must when visiting Kauai. It's suitable for all visitors because it's just a lookout point off the side of the road, so really everybody should take the time to drive up Waimea Canyon Drive and see it. If you're like me and you enjoy a good hike, there's a nice hiking trail just to the side of the lookout where you can catch more views and have a little fun. It does get really muddy sometimes though so make sure to bring a change of clothes if you hike through the mud. Back to the lookout point though, don't miss this incredible view when you're on the island.

Great views on drive up the mountain

By jstegma |

The views are beautiful at the top when the weather is clear. It's a nice drive regardless with plenty of places to stop along the way for views of Waimea Canyon.

great view to the valley

By Michelle Z |

The valley below is very green and beautiful. Many times the lookout is surrounded by clouds and is moist. We went there several times, each time has different experience.

Kalalau Lookout can often be a dynamic sight with clouds sometimes obscuring the valley view below you.

By Andy L |

Always a spectacular view of such a wonderful and sacred valley in Kauai. The lighting changes throughout the day with mid-morning and sunset as the best viewing. You are potentially and often in the clouds and can get skunked with the clouds obscuring the valley below. Sometimes, it’s worth waiting for 30 minutes and things can sometimes clear up. The scenery is very dynamic with the clouds.

Stunning View!

By Lindsey D |

Worth the drive! Absolutely stunning, great way to see the Na Pali coastline if you have kids and don't want to do the hike from the north side. Lookout was very accessible and had nice facilities. Very easy to visit with young kids.

My breathe was taken away here

By Kim W |

Kalalau Lookout was superb. But we were pleasantly surprised when we saw a few people walking in and out of a trailhead. We followed suit and the end of the trail was just... there was no words for it. I just cannot put into the words the magnificent 360 degrees view of the canyon. It took us approximately 1 hour to reach the end, so 2 hours return. Very short for an incredibly rewarding hike. We also got engaged here! Then boyfriend spontaneously popped onto his knees. That's how beautiful the view at the end is! No kidding. To this day, my heart never return. It still flutters at the end of the trail.

Incredible view but not the most impressive

By Gil40100 |

Kalalau lookout is at the end of the road 550 crossing Waimea canyon and Koke'e park. Easy to find and with a big parking. You can find facilities and picnic tables.
But the most important is the view on Kalalau Valley. Magical.
But the view is not so large from the fence... it's better the next stop at Pu'u ao kila lookout according me.
But here you can find the best trail to see the best views (the airplane trail), just on the left along the fence, you'll find a door, its there, but for experimented hikers only...
The weather can change very quickly here, but the morning is the best.

Family vacation

By Laurie H |

Took my son and 2 grand children to Hawaii for summer vacation with their grandmother. Drove all the way up to the top to see this lookout. It was a bit of a ride , but soo worth it.

Go when it is sunny and do the kalepa ridge trail

By lmcq11 |

Went twice to Kalalau lookout during my one week stay in July. It was cloudy with light rain on my first recon tour and of course we did not see anything. I waited for a sunny day and returned. It was still foggy around 10:30 but most clouds moved away around 11:30 which tells me maybe it is better not to go there too early in the morning. Views from the lookout on a clear day are great. I read on the web about a secret trail called the Kalepa ridge trail heading out towards the sea on one of the ridge. The gate to the trail is unmarked and is on the left of the lookout itself. We went down about 1 miles all the way to the tip of the cliff. The most beautiful views I have ever seen just appeared in front of us. If you are not too scared of heights and want a unforgettable short adventure, then this is the one. I saw a few other people on the trail. It was dry that day so the trail was good but I would not recommend on a wet day or with young kids around, it could be slippery. It become very scary at one point because the trail at the end is about 1 feet wide with 10,000 feet cliff on both sides, I m not kidding. I had to fall on my 4 legs and I was holding on to the small grass on the side of the trail because the wind was pushing me and I had nothing to hold on to. I made it but it was really scary and in retrospect was quite dangerous. So you go as far as you want, the view is pretty much the same. But make sure you wait for the sun. And bring a jacket as it can get cool at this altitude. Otherwise, stay on the cement lookout and all will be fine, its just that you will be done in about 5 minutes and will never know what you missed.

Well worth the drive

By too_few_trips_1 |

Each of the lookouts along Waimea Canyon has a dramatic view, but this one is th e best. The view is the best -- the Napali Coast. There's a nice trail along the ridge that goes beyond the lookout.

One tip -- when we were at Kokee it was raining and it would have been easy to turnout around and skip the Kalalau Lookout. On the way up the Kalalau Lookout, we drive above the clouds (and the rain).

No chance ...

By lau94 |

We didn't see much because we were in the clouds... too bad
Otherwise, there is parking, picnic tables

Another gorgeous view of Na Pali Coast

By Brooklynite_Abroad |

The views here are amazing, but there is a second lookout here that's obstructed by vegetation and should be better maintained. Make sure to get here well before 11am to avoid the cloud cover obstructing your views. Plenty of parking here.

The furthest North West of Kauai you can drive.

By 5658HappyTravellers |

Two days earlier we hiked a part of the Kalalau Trail to view the Na Pali Coast. It was neat to see it from the other side of the island.

Beautiful Sight Worth the Drive

By Christine H |

Absolutely breathtaking views but make sure to go early to avoid the fog/clouds. We could see the ocean waves crashing up on the distant beach and gorgeous cliffs.

Breathtaking!

By Texas Voyager |

It is a long drive up the mountain to this remote vista but so worth the time and effort for the magnificent views of what must be the very edge of the world. Words fall short of the sheer grandeur over Kalalau.

Breathtaking view!

By cherylgiraffe |

Just do it. Make the drive to the top to see this! We had to wait for the rains to stop but when they did, off we went. We got there the day before the State Parks all had to sadly close due to restrictions related to the corona virus. Hopefully this will end soon and tourists can return to Hawaii.

Don't miss the TREE

By DiAnnaTravels4Fun |

By all means, you HAVE to see the view from this Lookout. Kind of a side view of Na Pali Cliffs, (enough to whet your appetite and make you wanna book a sunset Na Pali Coast cruise with Makana Charters). A few folks here even jumped the fence to pose for pics (I hope their insurance is paid up!). There's two places for view here, second one has a nice shot of the waterfalls. But don't be so excited about the cliffs that you miss the tree by the picnic table. At first glance, it looks like 2 trees. It isn't. Fascinating growth, twisted and glorious.

A great view! Just a car stop for pictures!

By Josh L |

This is just a quick car stop for pictures while you’re exploring the area!

If it’s a cloudy day you’re not going to see much. But if it’s bright and sunny you may have to hold back your, “WOW” as it is beautiful!

Great views, but keep going higher

By John Sowell |

While the Pu'u o Kila Lookout a couple of miles farther up, at the end of Koke'e Road provide more stunning views, Kalalau Lookout is also worth gazing out from. It is located at the 18-mile mark.

The views get better the farther up Waimea Canyon Drive and Koke'e Road you travel. Both of the final two lookouts provide great views of the Kalalau Valley, which leads to the Na Pali Coast.

We lucked out, no clouds!

By Jesse & Aiza Tronson |

We have been all over the world and this is one of the most beautiful views that we have ever seen. I was told that you have to be somewhat lucky to get a view without clouds or fog. It was perfect blue sky.

If you make the trip up to Waimea Canyon, you must to go a little further to go see this view. Spectacular. It looks just like the postcard. Definitely our time here was worth the drive. My kids who are 4 and 8 were even impressed by the view. Normally they just want to chase each other.

Don't miss this. If it's foggy, do the drive again later on your trip to see it again.

Cloud cover

By Hohenzollern |

We got here just as cloud obstructed the views. We were later told that early morning is the best time to view from here.

Was totally worth it

By RC Wanderer |

I did the easy drive to the look out, which was fantastic. And the hike to the waterfall. I saw a rainbow in the canyon, among all the other just amazing views.
There is a fee at the State park, but is usable at the others.
Go. You won’t regret it.

Absolutely beautiful.

By mmccoy53 |

Plan a whole day to explore the road to the lookout. Weather changes quickly so the area can be fogged in. The look out is absolutely beautiful

See the Na Pali coast with ease

By Via_girl |

If you can't take a hike or boat to view the Na Pali coast, this lookout is the next best thing. We read the reviews so made sure we there early before the clouds and fog set in. Pretty good view from this lookout but even better if you drive a few more minutes to the end of the road to the Puuo Kila lookout.

It looks like some trails start at this lookout but because they are not marked (on the map), we stayed off them.

Amazing view!

By floridaherbie |

Pretty close to the end of state road 550 is the Kalalau Lookout with a grandiose view to the Pacific and the Na Pali cliffs. Make sure you are there before noon because later many times the clouds and the moisture from the ocean are closing in and you cannot see the cliffs and the coast.

Have to try and visit!

By KD0608 |

This is THE spot that defines Kauai for me. It is absolutely breathtaking. On our trip this time it was very cloudy, so we couldn’t see much of the Valley which was sad, but it was winter. I would definitely recommend trying every visit though because when you can see it is absolutely stunning. There is nowhere in the world like this.

Highlight on Kauai

By Sheba42 |

The view is spectacular. I love the colors here. Professional photographers were set up all over the place. It is an easy walk around the rim.

Beautiful, Breathtaking

By Baward2 |

A other wonderful lookout point. Stood in awe of all the beautiful views of ocean, plants, waterfall in the distance. Felt like you could reach out and touch the clouds. Unreal panoramic views.

Absolutely Stunning

By EmBentley |

An absolute must on any trip to Kauai. There's often cloud cover obscuring the view, but if you have the time and patience to sit for a while, you'll almost always get a few clear windows in which to marvel at the beauty of nature!

Amazing. Always

By ggsmommy |

You have to see this - we’ve been coming every year for 20 years and we still do it every year. You can just get out and look if you aren’t healthy enough to hike - or you can hike the ridge for constantly changing and amazing views

Spectacular Views!

By Teena R |

Kalalau Lookout is at the very end of a fantastic drive - on the way to the top, there is an abundance of great places to stop, all with their own walks, and views, some with waterfalls, and swimming holes. You can choose how far and how little you walk, definitely an Insta worthy day!

Awesome spot for pictures

By Sarah S |

This is an awesome place for stopping and taking pictures of the coastline below. A really great view. Cloud rolled in extremely fast and suddenly the entire view was covered in fog. Not to miss.

worth it!

By EmAyJayAy |

Beautiful. If it is cloudy when you get there, just wait half an hour or less and the clouds will clear and you will see the most beautiful nature viewpoint! We didn't do any hikes around here, just came to the viewpoint, but it was great nonetheless. Highly recommended, go early to miss all the tourist buses!

Top of the world

By Jim W |

If you go see the Canyon please drive the extra 10 minutes to see this overlook. On the cool side there so it was great to take a break from the humidity.

Breathtaking beauty

By Celeste M |

If you love lush scenery this is for you. The drive there provides many surprises. Have you ever seen a rainbow tree? Beautiful

Wow

By annie |

By all accounts we were lucky that the sun shone and it was a pleasant 75 Deg F when we arrived at the Kalalau Lookout. The scenery was all that we might wish for and the whole exercise was worth the effort. We were glad we went relatively early (left Lihue at about 08:30) as on our way back we passed many more cars and tourist buses making their way up. If your on the island you should go.

Breathtaking

By J M |

The view of the napili coast is breath taking. Words cannot describe how spectacular it is. And the best part is you ca drive to the lookout. If you attempt the hike, it's slippery and difficult in parts but the views get better.

Incredible Views !

By Floridians33596 |

If you are not going to do a Helicopter ride on Kauai then not going to this Lookout and Waimea Canyon lookout would be a shame . The View is STUNNING ! Parking was not a problem and the view seemed to change after walking only short distance. Highly Recommended !!!.

Just up the canyon, don’t miss it

By Travel’n Matt |

Just further up from the valley and worth visiting. Beautiful views and nice area for lunch before heading back down to the town.

Just Stunning

By dpotter78 |

The beauty of this lookout is amazing. Looks like something out of a storybook. You won't be disappointed driving up here.

Get there early!

By HoneyLea |

The best view of the Kalalau trail is from this lookout - passed the Waimea look outs. But get there early - definitely before 9:30am! We came all the way from Princeville and had to plan this out. The clouds start to fill in the valley and its impossible to see the view if you wait until after 10am. We got there right around 9:30am and only had a few brief chances to see the entire valley. Wish we would have gotten their earlier - so worth the trek!

Two lookouts worth the spectacular views of Kalalau Valley.

By Andy L |

There are two lookout to see the spectacular and peaceful views of Kalalau Valley. First is Kalalau Lookout and the second down the road is Pu’u O Kila Lookout. The second lookout is where the trails lead off into the mountains and more views. Sometimes the views are obscured due to being in the clouds. Patience is often necessary.

Long drive up there but definitely worth it

By jcdeveloper |

It's a long drive up a very winding route to get up there but it's definitely worth it. We tried to get there towards the evening so that we could see the sunset. At first, it was very cloudy with visibility completely gone however we stuck around for a while and it slowly cleared up. To come to Kauai and not make it up here at least once, would be a tragedy.

Beautiful views!!

By Arthur M |

The Kalalau Valley is probably one of the most photographed places on Earth! The views are stunning both from the lookout above and a boat below. Don't miss it!

Do check the weather

By CasandraTP |

I really can only give an average review because, and this is completely my fault. It was full cloud cover. I checked the weather before I came and it said full cloud cover by 2pm and we got here just before 2 and we couldn’t see anything. Luckily we had seen the beauty of Waimea canyon at all the other lookouts so I didn’t mind too much.

The best view of the valley!

By K3322NTelizabethm |

This view is amazing when the weather is clear. Even when the weather is not totally clear the view can be amazing as the clouds go in and out. Go to the lookout at the very end of the road for the best views. Taking a small hike from the lookout has very different views.

It is cooler here so dress warmly.

Long drive, amazing view.

By j4wolfe |

If you have young children you may need something to entertain them on the way up. The views while driving are still beautiful, however with the winding roads and slow speed limits our 4 year old got bored as did my fiancé and her mother. If you take any advice in regards to this area take this, bring a picnic! The area is large enough to run around for children, fenced off at the edge, and when we were there there was a tent setup to sell jewelry. The view itself is breathtaking both on the way up and at the top, use the pull offs and stretch your legs while getting killer pictures!

Best place to see the Napali coast

By Tammy G |

If you aren’t a hiker and you aren’t taking a boat trip, this is the best way to experience the Napali coast line. The views are incredible.

Gorgeous Views

By Brad |

Stopped here as part of a downhill bike tour. Fantastic views of the Napali Coast from above. No hiking needed!

GO EARLY IN THE MORNING!!!!

By MRFRIENDLY |

we tried to get this view 2x but both days it rained by the early afternoon... go early so you can beat the rain or have time to wait for it to clear out...

Gorgeous View

By Bajabadboy |

Kalalau Lookout is at the end of the Waimea Canyon road. It's not to be missed on a clear day. Check the weather before you go.

What a View!

By By the beach |

Incredible view!!! We were fortunate to go on a day where there were limited clouds. This provided us with blue skies and water. Also, the clouds that were there were in the distance and seemed to be at the same height. The winding narrow roads make getting there an effort, one that is totally worth it (on a nice clear day). Like we did, I would suggest packing a lunch and stopping along the way on one of the secluded spots and enjoy the lunch view that you will never forget.

Worthy of 5 stars

By EvasWorld |

This canyon beats the Grand IMO. There are a number of lookouts along the way, but definitely go all the way for the above the clouds water view.

Drive there. Get lucky! Stay awhile until the cloud move!

By Loren778899 |

We arrived. We saw the view. Many did not because they were impatient. We went to the end of the road and hiked to the peak of Pihea and checked the view again on the way back. Then after seeing the pitiful museum down the road three miles we went back to the view again! Loved it every time!

Neat to see the "backside"

By srobby |

We took an action raft adventure to view the Na Pali coast on Sunday and then drove to the Kalalau lookout on Monday to see the other side of the incredible Coast. So amazing to see it from two directions.

Jurassic Sights at its best

By Irene L |

This is one lookout you mustn't miss when u head to Waimea Canyon area. It's stunningly beautiful. If you are lucky, you should get a clear view of the mountain range alongside the Pacific Ocean. If weather is not in your favour when u first arrive, try waiting alittle, you will be treated to a spectacular sight. We were lucky as the clouds cleared when we got there. Some visitors waited for about 30 mins for the cloud to pass. That 30 mins is worth the wait. :)

Beautiful spot

By Sightseer59721865544 |

This is my third favorite viewpoint in Waimea Canyon State Park! It is stunning and so big that you can get a great view!

Unlike some other reviews though, you are meant to pay for parking and entry.

Can't believe we missed this our first visit

By Sandy M |

Beautiful view! Our first visit we didn't go all the way to the end. Due to the flooding on the North shore in April, we had to think of alternatives and I'm so glad we gave this another go. This is at mile marker 18 on Kokee Road. We had it mostly to ourselves at 9am. Fog covers the view sporadically, but wait 10 minutes and it will dissipate.

Breathtaking.

By miro666 |

Easy to get to with great views and not that many people. Ample of parking space. You can go down a bit and get close to the edge without barrier if you'd like and look at different angles of the lookout.

This is nice, but it's much better about a mile further down the road

By KurtAndWendy |

The view of Kalalau Valley from this lookout at mile marker 18 is nice. But, if you want a truly spectacular view, travel about a mile further until the road ends and check out the valley from the Pu'u o Kila Lookout. You walk up to the viewing area. Beyond there, you can walk down an unpaved area where you can see the valley on one side and the canyon and north shore mountains on the other. Kalalau Lookout is the better of the two lookouts if you have mobility issues. It's relatively flat and paved. It also has a nice lawn area -- a nice place to picnic after the drive up.

NICE VIEWS

By SoCalOregonian |

Located almost to the end of the road, it affords nice views of the Kalepa Ridge and the valley. On your way here stop by the Koke'e Natural History Museum.

Magical view!

By Pipermu |

Our family drove from Princeville one morning specifically to see the Kalalau Lookout and the Canyon. Don’t be tempted to stop at the canyon lookouts on the way up. You have to get to the top before 11am or cloud may obscure the view of the valley. We made it to the top by 10.40 and were totally rewarded...the view is breathtaking. Watching the changing light and shadows sweep across the valley was so special. A magical place. The drive up seems long, but it is so worth it. We also enjoyed the canyon lookouts on the way back down. A must see if you are on this island!

A short drive to the Grand Canyon of Kaua'i

By Terry D |

Although the fog was heavy when we got to the actual lookout, the views along the way were breathtaking. We stopped at many turnouts that are provided for along the road to get out of the car and get a closer look at the grandeur of nature that has been provided for us.

Waterfalls cascading down over 500 feet into the canyon below. The color changes in the canyon walls as you go from the bottom of the canyon to the top of the peaks is just a wonderful sight.

Helicopters were flying the day we were there so it was fun to watch them circle the canyon and take in the sights for their occupants.

It's a nice leisurely drive, no speeding on this paved road as there are lots of curves.

Certainly a must see when on the beautiful island of Kaua'i.

Unfortunately it was A Foggy Day!

By Colin F |

We waited for the fog to blow out of the way! It would move frequently but we never had a clear view of the valley. We were told that the valley us fertile and is reachable by a trail.

Too Cloudy

By Alison K |

I visited on a cloudy day, after a rain so my expectations were pretty low. Couldn't see much. I'm sure it looks way better on a clear day! We had just been on a boat ride along the coast so we had already seen enough of the Na Pali.

Must see - pack a picnic!

By hayleypl |

We almost didn't drive to this viewpoint but I am SO glad we changed our minds! The view is just incredible. I recommend bringing a picnic (there are picnic tables), sitting back & enjoying the beauty around you!

Breathtaking

By Bill K |

We were fortunate to have a beautiful clear day on or visit. You will want to weather watch before driving all the way to this lookout. Some days (or some parts of the day) the visibility is poor. Otherwise, this is a must do for a trip to Kauai. Photos do not do justice to how beautiful this spot appears.

Well worth the drive and take a hike, it's woth it also.

By 1968TR250 |

Make sure you go all the way to the end. Be careful pulling off on the side of the road on the way up, it's tight and I'm not so sure you really get any views that you don't get later. If you get a relatively clear day you can see the valley out to the Napali Coast as well.

Beautiful!

By TCM327 |

Where the Waimea Canyon meets the N’apali Coast. Just breathtakingly beautiful. You can hike here as well.

Must see

By Namita C |

Beautiful views look unreal. We went in the afternoon and there were no clouds. Highly recommend this lookout.

Nice

By SwissGreg |

Beware to changing weather. Arrived, it was nice, but in a few minutes, started a dense fog blocking all the view down the mountain and covered the lookout. But before fog, it offered a gorgeous view down he mountains. A must.

Cloudy

By QuickWhitTravel |

Be prepared for a cloudy view some days, but occasionally there is a break in the fog even on cloudy days and you can get a beautiful view of the ocean and the mountains and cliffs. Worth the trip, even if it's cloudy, though!

Jaw Dropping View

By David F |

By all means try to visit the Kalalau Lookout on Kauai. It is a bit of a long drive on winding, twisting, narrow roads but once you reach the top and look out of the canyon it will take your breath away. Words just cannot describe the beauty of this valley. one bit of caution though. The weather can be a crap shoot. We have visited Kalalau Lookout 4 times and 2 of the times clouds and rain filled the valley and left us with no visibility. The other 2 times though was absolutely incredible.

Wow!

By citadel83 |

The views at Kalalau lookout are incredible. It is worth the drive to see this impressive sight. Looking into this valley is breath taking!

spectacular views

By John K |

a really spectacular view of the mountains valleys and the waterfalls, You can easily spend a good 15 minutes there enjoying and admiring the view

Go early to see view

By Cold_Calgarians |

We stopped here after hiking most of the day and saw only clouds. Came back a few days later to amazing view. The sun was not yet lighting up both sides of the mountains so a bit dark but still incredible. Go early in morning before clouds roll in. We were there before 8Am, so nice and quiet to enjoy before all the tourists show up.

On a clear day

By scubal0ver |

If the weather is on your side ( and if it isn't wait a little and it will probably clear) the view from 5100 feet down the valley to its end in 2000 ft cliffs is magnificent.

Go. Just go.

By actranslation |

We were staying on the north shore, so this was a bit of a trek on what promised to be a hot day--but it was clear. It was stunning! And notably cooler and comfortable. Many accessible walks up to viewing areas that provided a spectacular view both to the south and to the north, mountains and waterfalls. Make sure you have plenty of photo storage and full batteries.

We took the advice of others here to get an early start, and even then parking was a bit of a challenge. The good news is that turnover in the parking lots is fairly quick, so we always found a spot. Parking is $10 per car, plus $5 per person, payable by card only. The ticket is valid all day.

Many people packed a picnic and enjoyed the many shade picnic areas scattered around the park. They're smart, since you will want to spend more time here than you originally thought.

You may think you don't need sunscreen because you're only out of the car for 15 minutes at a time, but you're wrong. Slather it on, and reapply every hour or so over midday.

Drive the waimea canyon

By Jay W |

worth the drive. Watch the weather and get there early or else the lookout may be so clouded over to actually see the canyon.

Breathtaking views! Don't miss it.

By RobinChillicothe |

we went twice...one day all we saw was a big cloud (raining that day) but we went back and were so glad we did. Unbelievable beauty. Don't miss it!

Views Are Unreal

By Rachel D |

It's a drive that seems to keep going and going...but you need to go to the top. WOW is this an amazing overlook. The view is so beautiful it could be a green-screen. It looks like a screensaver, except you can feel the breeze, smell tropical plants, and feel oh-so-small. Don't miss it.

Be patient if you don't see anything at first

When we got there we could not see anything because there were clouds blocking the view. It was too bad because the view is supposed to be very interesting.

So after maybe 5 minutes we decided to go check out the next lookout (Pu'u O Kila) since there was nothing to see there. But in Pu'u O Kila was also hiding its charms when we got there. Fortunately, somebody told us that we should be patient because it changes so fast up there that there were good chances that we could be viewing something if we waited a little while.

And we did. So I guess that if we had been more patient we would have been able to enjoy Kalalau lookout too.

So my advice is to be patient and want at least 15 minutes, it could be worth it.

Pick the right time of day!

The first time I visited the Pu'u o Kila Lookout, in the late afternoon, it was totally socked in with fog/clouds. I learned the best time to go is EARLY in the morning. I got there around 8 AM and got the most wonderful photographs. But within 30 minutes the clouds started to roll in and within 20 minutes the view was almost obscured. So get there early!

Wonderful

This is the ultimate, along with Waimea Canyon! The long lost history of the valley is quite interesting, considering the only ingress & egress is via the ocean. The clouds roll thru, the sunshine changes the colors and the rainbows are impressive.

Get here early ...

By treerod1 |

There are two locations to view the Kalalau Valley ... this spot and the one at the end of the road. Both spots offer great views, but I prefer the spot at the end of the road.

I will say one thing when you take the Waimea Canyon drive, start at the end of the road first, and be there before 8 AM ... 1) you’re likely to find parking and 2) generally the clouds start coming into the valley by 9 AM ... this area is considered one of the wettest spots on earth. I’ve been here at 1 PM and was essentially in the clouds and couldn’t see anything 50 feet in front of me.

The views of Waimea Canyon are usually fine till about noon to 1 PM, although you can start seeing clouds/mist creeping into the canyon at around 10 AM.

Best look out spot in Kauai

By Michelle A |

The dead end Look out on your trip through the Waimea Canyon and kokee State Park scenic driving.

To get to the famous Lookout point takes about an hour drive with no Stops. I was really hoping to see this famous overlook of the Na pali coast. However, it was raining and full of fog when I went. I realize halfway up the drive, but I was committed to hopefully see the clouds part and see some Beautiful scenery.

Either way it was a really nice drive and I got to see nice fog. Just kidding when I was ready to walk back to my car it started pouring rain thank you to the restroom for giving me shelter.

Definitely coming back here again.

Just remember to pay for your Parking.

$5 For each person plus another five for your car

Beautiful place to see if the weather is good to see something.

During our visit to Kauai, we encountered rain and clouds which prevented us from really appreciating the scenery here. We tried twice to see the place. Our first visit was a disaster. By the time we arrived from visiting the various lookouts on the way up, the clouds moved in and we were not able to see the valley and mountains. Someone told us to get there early like 7am in the morning to really see it before the clouds moved in. Our second trip was a little bit better. We got up at 4:30am in the morning to try to get to this spot before the clouds moved in. Unfortunately, we did get there by 7am, but the clouds started to move in so we were not able to fully appreciated the scenery. It was cold and rainy. I was disappointed that we were not able to fully see everything. I really wanted to take some good photos here.

Phenomenal views of the coast!

By Kdawg282 |

Phenomenal lookout point! We were lucky enough to get a clear day and we could see the entire valley! The views were incredible. If visiting the canyon area, I definitely recommend heading up to this lookout point as it’s so worth it! Look for Mike marker 18!

A view worth the drive!

By Mjr51750 |

The view from here is breathtaking. If you don’t want to fly or do the boat ride, this is the best you can do but an excellent view nonetheless. The majesty of the terrain with the coast as a backdrop is a view of a lifetime. So much beauty on this island.

Beautiful views

Beautiful view of the island paradise. This is Eden. Great way to get a lay of the land and see the creatures and environment

When in Kaua’i, SEE THIS!

By Sara |

If you’re going to Waimea Canyon already, this is a must see. Heck, even if you’re not going to Waimea canyon (which you should), this is still a must see! Very windy at the top and some areas without railing, so watch children but gorgeous and worth the drive!! Lots of hikes in the area too!

Pays to be patient

Went a couple of weeks ago and when we arrived, around noonish, it was completely cloudy/foggy and you couldn't see a thing. Then, all of a sudden, the clouds disappeared in about 30 seconds and the view was amazing. Some people said they had been there for 15 minutes with nothing to see, and a few had already left. If it's cloudy you may want to stick around -- it's worth it.

Epic views of the Kalalau Valley

By Andy L |

There are two lookouts to visit for the epic views. You must see both. The second is about a mile past the first lookout point. The weather can be fickle because often you are in the clouds. Sometimes waiting for a 15 min and it may clear, sometimes it may not. Once you are there stay for a bit to watch the light play across the NaPali Cliff. Sunrise is nice as is sunset. This is one of Kauai’s signature sights to behold!

Great view

By golfnut71952 |

Awesome view If cloudy wait. It is surprising how fast the clouds will disappate. Keep going to the PuuO Kila lookout. Both are jaw dropping. Over 5,000 ft in elevation.

A must

By LisaMNUSA |

It's a must stop if you visit the canyon park. A very short walk from the parking lot to the view point. You could see the green cliffs and the beach even though it's far away.

7th times a charm

By Companion55139101996 |

We have been here 7 times since 1984. Because of the height, this view has always been in clouds. This is the first time in 7 that we were able to see the coast and the ocean completely. This was a memorable view of a lifetime.

Amazing views of Na Pali Coast!

By Josh C |

This is worth the drive up Waimea Canyon. You'll miss this if you don't drive further up the road. The views here are just amazing. There are also hiking trails and place to picnic as well.

Awesome view of one of the most epic sights in all of Hawaii

By Andy L |

This lookout is an epic view of the Na Pali coast. It's a classic view of Kauai and all of the Hawaiian Islands. This view point can be fickle in that it can be totally engulfed in clouds at all times of the year. Sometimes you are simply skunked and will not be able to see anything. Sunset is probably the most awesome. If you are lucky you might get a rainbow!

Spectacular!

By TheWaryTraveler |

On our first trip to Waimea Canyon in 2012 we stopped at the first lookout and turned around. Since we were staying in the North Shore the extra drive to Kalalau Lookout didn't seem worth it. This time we drove the extra 7 miles and were blown away by the stunning view at Kalalau lookout. We didn't take the 2 mile hike out as it was very muddy and we were not prepared for the possible dangers. The view from the lookout is breathtaking and no picture I have seen does it justice. This is one of the most incredible things to see on all of Kauai and shouldn't be missed!

The drive is a bit windy, be prepared if you get car sick. There are several stops, including two lookouts and Keeoke lodge for food and coffee (Little Fish Coffee has a small shop inside) are. Just a couple miles from the lookout.

The road is paved and you do not need any special vehicle to get there

Skip it and go to the very end lookout!

By sylboh |

Still nice views if you want to stop but the very end lookout has the very BEST view of the Kalalau valley!

Amazing views

By dskefamily4 |

This view is a short hike on the trail. It is a beautiful hike with ocean on one side and trees on the other. Bring water and be prepared for changing weather. Fog and rain rolled in on us pretty fast. Great hike for kids, but be sure to wear appropriate shoes and not flip flops.

After 11:00am

By Perkadventures |

We were informed that you you need to be in this area before 11:00am because the clouds and rain came in about this time daily.

Could barely see the ocean with small sailboat

Would return again some day

A must do on Kauai

By martin k |

When visiting the Hawaiian island of Kauai you should take a tour of Waimea Canyon. The sights along the tour are breathtaking and the stops are equally as fabulous. It does not matter which company you use. Some may offer hiking options as well.

Breathtaking amazing views

By ItchyFeet |

What an amazing sight to see. The na pali coast from 3500 feet looking down to the water. Later afternoon sun before sunset gave us great lighting and watching the clouds roll over the cliffs. A must see after seeing the Waimea canyon keep driving to the very top of the hill.

Amazing

By kaitlinnicole |

Soooo cool! We went twice to see the views. 1st day was rainy and cloudy so we disnt wait around. Our second trip we noticed the skies were extremely clear, so we went up. Clouds covered for maybe 5 or 10 mins and then completely cleared up! Amazing!

A Must-see in Kauai

By Al K |

Many people stay at Poipu, Kapaa or Princeville and never drive up the Waimea Canyon road. This is a must see.
Views on a clear day to the Pacific and Kalalau Valley are amazing. Neat to watch a sunset also.
Allow 2 hour drive from Lihue area.
Hiking is very close, but watch your footing and bring hiking poles

Spectacular views

By Jeff A |

What a wonderful place. The beauty from this lookout is unbelievable. Be sure and go all the way to the top of Waimea Canyon first so you can see the views without the problem of clouds rolling in. We got up there by 8:45am and had the full views. After a short hike, the clouds started to come in. It's hard to pass up the different places along the way to check out the canyon, but those that are lower are not affected by clouds. Well worth the trip from Poipu.

Waimea Canyon to the top!

By Cheryl G |

Waimea Canyon is one of my favorite sights on the island. You can drive and stop along the way at unbelievably breathtaking sights. Drive until the end and you will reach this lookout. You literally see this amazing valley and get a preview of the NaPali coast. Amazing!

Fantastic View - beyond words!

By Catherine B |

Best view I think I have ever seen! Well worth the drive! This view is found at the end of the road past the Waimea Canyon views. This view was fantastic!

Happy that we visited on a day that was clear.
