Great visit

By John C |

Visited with our 4 year old son and had Lexi as our tour guide. This was a wonderful experience and well worth the time and money. Got to try many fruits we've never heard of and love (sapote, lychee, star apple) and feeding of piglets and horses was therapeutic. Please make the effort and go. Thanks Lexi!

Good for children and other wildlife lovers

By zephyr64 |

This is a good place to wait for your plane home after checking out of hotel. We had a 2.5 year old, parents, and grandparents. Enjoyable sit-down experience for all. We did get off the train to get closer to the animals at a pit-stop but that's not necessary to enjoy the animals. The captive wild boar are pretty cool. Other animals include cow, horse, and sheep, and you get to feed them. I really enjoyed the guide and learning about the plants and other critters that live in Kauai. The grounds also includes large grassy area which is perfect for a little run-around play.

We really enjoyed this peaceful, laid-back and informative tour

By Kim A |

We had a great time on this tour, this was our 2nd time going. Our conductor highlighted info about the island, items grown on the plantation and the family's commitment to the environment and in providing sanctuary for animals. It was great fun to stop and feed the horses and wild pigs! Thank you so much!

Such a Fun Experience

By RebeccaLealLMFT |

I booked this experience as something fun to do with my 1.5 year old son, 10 year old niece and my sister. We all had a great time and it was fun learning more about Kauai. We also loved feeding the animals.

Train ride

By Tomio I |

The guide was very funny and knowledgeable. A good value for the experience. There's also a restaurant and rum tasting to check out.

it was just ok

By Meera R |

we did the 40 minute train ride mainly so we could feed the animals. when we got there the workers were not friendly at all. we were told to wait in a place and when we went there were admonished for waiting there. finally figured out that we were in the correct spot. got on the train and the conductor was nice. the animal feeding was very short and not well managed just a free for all of throwing food and tryinig to get close to the fence. the area is beautiful but totally not worth the money

Great time at the Plantation!

Awesome!!! Conductor Tom was phenomenal!! The history, views, experience were all amazing!! We will for sure do this again! Highly recommend!

All Aboard!

Had a nice train ride and pleasant visit. Train host had a great attitude and made the trip fun. Fun as a family, young and old couples seemed to enjoy the ride. It was not busy on the Sat. we went
Bought tickets online but can also be bought at station. There is also a Luau, longer safari tour, Rum Co., sweet shop, Gaylord's and Dole stand on same site.

More fun than I thought

By sbentley000 |

it was informative and i liked feeding the animals. Afterward we stopped in the house to look around and every room was a different store but you could see the structure of the rooms.

Informative & Fun

By OandS9 |

The Kauai Plantation Signature Train tour is good fun for the whole family. Our tour guide (Aqua bro) was informative and humorous and the train is really cool.

Fun time

By Lexi M |

Train crew were funny and knowledgeable. Beautifully maintained property. Train ride was almost too fast, could have lasted all day. Whole group was 28+ and enjoyed it.

Good for What It Is

By Mrs R |

We took the Plantation Tour on a Sunday. The good news: plenty of parking and no crowds. The bad news: nothing else was open.

Also, I read other reviews about stopping to pick fruit and a petting zoo, etc. Be aware that the Plantation Tour is just that: a ride to see the trees and fields with one stop to see pigs and horses. It was fine... just don't expect more than that.

Return visit disappointing

By msmith3447 |

We first visited this attraction in November 2014. It was the highlight of our trip. When we knew we were returning to Kauai, it was the first thing we booked. However, our second experience was quite disappointing. It didn’t occur to us that traveling in March would mean off-season. This meant that the majority of the fruits we would experience would be citrus. Things like oranges, lemons and limes. We’re from California and get these fruits in abundance. While our guide was very friendly, we were continually being told of all of the fruits that we looked forward to that were not yet ripe. I understand that this can’t be controlled by the plantation, but a disclaimer or price reduction for off-season would have been greatly appreciated. Additionally, the trees had not been tended to for some time and the fruit that was available was sparse. Without proper pruning, trees will bear less fruit. This was evident. The final straw in an overall disappointing day was that by the time we got to lunch, it was cold. Feeding the animals remained a highlight and kept the trip from being a one star.

Great place for young kids

By OicorAR |

We had a great time. Our 3 and a half yo enjoyed discovering the plantations, picking fruits from the trees and feeding the animals and of course, the train ride

Kauai Plantation railroad tour

By Kelly K |

Our train guide Kamu was very informative, friendly and funny. The train highlighted the many native hawaiian plants, plants and animals. I enjoyed feeding the animals and the beautiful landscape.

Family fun

By aked17 |

We took our kids for the train ride during our visit and we had a great time! The guy narrating the ride was really funny & made it entertaining for all ages. The kids really enjoyed feeding the animals too and seeing the baby pigs

A fun train ride around a farm visiting cute animals.

By what666 |

A fun excursion since who doesn't like trains? It features a 45(?) minute ride around the farm grounds visiting some farm animals where one stops and is given food to give to the animals.. and who doesn't like farm animals like baby cows and sheeps lol? The place is also overrun by very colorful wild chickens. Apparently it it illegal to feed them off the plantation, so this is one's only opportunity. I wouldn't do this again, but it's a must do once.

All aboard!

By lnschley |

The train ride is great, such a beautiful property, Loved feeding the animals.
This was our 3rd time at the plantation train ride and luau, it should be on everyone’s to do list when visiting Kaua’i

A Kauai MUST DO!!!

By Passenger41575163390 |

We did the package that contained the train ride and the Luau. Both were very satisfactory. The luau was AMAZING!!! This is a highly recommended must do in Kauai!!! The train ride explains the history as well as the opportunity to feed the animals. There was a great craft show afterwards. Open bar! And then dinner and a show. Also go watch the unveiling of the pig from underground. Very interesting!

Great for Small Kids

By Katrina C |

We have a 2 nd a 5 year old and they absolutely loved this train ride. Feeding the animals was the highlight! Would definitely recommend!

An enjoyable excursion

By Tom M |

Despite not traveling with our children or grandchildren, this was a pleasant experience. Feeding the plantation’s many animals was a tickle.

Fantastic Family Outing

By gwerder530 |

We had a great time. The Kauai Plantation Railway and Orchard tour was very accommodating for the 9 of us. Our tour guide, Tiny was awesome. We had a great time seeing the train, riding and learning a bit about the history of the plantation, and then getting to walk through tasting delicious fruits and feeding some of the animals. We had a blast and would definitely recommend to anyone looking at doing this.

Very informative and a nice family day

By Laura K |

We took the full package, train guide, lunch, animals. But First….we were stuck in traffic and called to let them know we would be late for the train, and were kind enough to wait for us. Everyone working at the plantation were very friendly and willing to answer any questions you had. Our Tour guide, Kai, was very knowledgeable of the plantation and we enjoyed all the different fruit we could sample. It was a lot of slow walking as there are many stops throughout the plantation so if you don’t mind standing, this tour is for you. Otherwise, I would just take the train ride around the plantation. Our lunch was enjoyable and had plenty of time to sit and relax. We fed horses, pigs, alpaca. After the train ride there are plenty of shops and dine areas to explore. Really a great tour. Only gave four stars because for me it was too much standing around in the orchards. Oh, and don’t forget the Koloa Rum Company for a nice tasting!

Great for Families

By Mama0f6 |

The train ride was not too long for our little ones. We enjoyed feeding the animals and seeing the different plants and animals. The information shared while riding was really good too. I definitely recommend anyone to go. There is soft serve and Koloa samples next to it too.

Great Experience - Excellent Tour Guide Kai

By dwwenzel |

We took the train, lunch, and orchard adventure tour at Kilohana Plantation, and had as wonderful an experience as we could possibly hope for. Our guide, Kai K., was excellent! His knowledge of the environment, native species, and Hawaiian history was exceptional. He was a patient, kind, and warm person. He was an excellent communicator too. In particular he was very knowledgeable about Kauai and its history. Everything he showed us or taught us was impressive and always interesting. Kai let our group ask unlimited questions and he was well-prepared with answers.
This was a fantastic experience in every respect. And Kai in particular stood out as truly excellent. Our family highly recommends this tour!

Wonderful experience!!

By AmieeHo |

I highly recommend the train ride and the luau!! I took my two young kids and they loved the train ride! My husband and I also enjoyed it because of the witty and entertaining tour guide that had funny jokes and provided informative history about Kauai and the plantation! During the middle of the train ride, you get off to feed some farm animals (cows, horses, pigs, and chickens). You get really up close and personal with the animals, so my kids really enjoyed it!! After the train ride is the luau. There's an open bar and a craft fair while you wait for the show to start. The whole sitting area is covered so even though it was sprinkling a little and super windy, we weren't really affected. The food was delicious and you get as much as you want! They also said all the leftovers are fed to the farm animals so it's less good waste! Yay! The luau show was such a big production! There was live singing, a live band, fancy lighting, beautiful costumes, professional dancers, and a whole story line to tie together all the different dances! It was a wonderful production!! At first I was a little hesitant to purchase tickets for the kiddos because it was pretty expensive but now I think it's a really good value and I'm so glad we did it!! I highly recommend Kauai plantation for the train ride and the luau!!! If we ever come back, I would love to experience it again!!

Enjoyable for Kids!

By Linda C |

Touristy BUT very pleasant two hours! Kids around us loved it! Gorgeous property. We would recommend to families with pre-teen kids in their group. Reasonable price.

Fun for the entire family

By Nomad0921 |

Easy and enjoyable 40 minute open air train ride suitable for the entire family - 8-80! Relaxing informative ride narrated by the train crew describing the role and history of the plantation in Kauai. The ride includes a stop to feed the animals on the property and a description of the various fruits and vegetables grown for the on site restaurant. This is an absolutely delightful way to spend time on Kauai!

Would recommend

By Amy W |

The railway was fun and my kids enjoyed the midway stop to feed the animals. Didn’t realize they grew so many different fruits. Would recommend.

Great Tour!

By alanameiling |

This train ride was very informative and interesting thanks to the guide, Kai. Our train driver Dan joked with us as well. Thank you Lily for helping us book our reservation. The great staff here elevate the whole experience.

Plantation train in April 2024

By joee303 |

The train ride was short, but very enjoyable. You got to learn a bit about the history, farming and animals on property. Feeding the animals was fun too. Kai was a great tour guide.

Lovely plantation

By nicolelR8211QG |

This beautiful plantation offers so much from a first class restaurant, train ride where we fed animals and we learned about the rich history of the past.

40 min train ride through AG and jungle.

By Brittany B |

Fun for kids and adults. An educational experience about agriculture and wild animals of Kauai. We got to feed horses, cows, and wild boar. Great tour guide- I don’t remember his name but I think he said it wasn’t Kimo… he had good dad jokes too.

The driver was rude and I felt discriminated and uncomfortable. I would not bring my family again.

By almavargas151105 |

The driver or the attraction was rude and made us felt uncomfortable. I felt discriminated and very uncomfortable during our visit! I definitely would never bring my family back at this attraction.

Great guide and wonderful tour

By sbwilsonfl |

This is a wonderful tour not to be missed. Don't let the hiking aspect scare you off, it's very leisurely walking, and even little kids will do fine.

The guide, Kai, who developed the tour is super knowledgeable about Hawaiian history and flora and fauna. He lets you try many exotic fruits off the trees. And the animals are a lot of fun. Overall, perfect for families or if you want a low-key but really interesting outdoor activity. Recommended highly.

Great train ride

By syinsd |

During the 40-minute train ride, we learned about the local area, as well as about the farm and agriculture where the train is located. By far, the most fun was the stop to feed the wild pigs, horses, cows, and donkey. Even my adult kids enjoyed the interaction with the animals. The baby pigs were so adorable and cute (just like puppies). Overall, a great way to spend some relaxing time while visiting Kauai.

Beautiful Grounds

By fudmeister |

This is a relaxing way to see a large working farm. The fruit trees are amazing as well as all the farm animals. Feeding the feral pigs was a highlight!

Great experience, especially recommend for children!

By Tgess |

Very nice 40 minute train tour experience. Very informative tour guide, explained the plants and fruits in the plantation. Nicely restored historic planation train. Feeding animals was fun for all. Especially recommend for children! When the train tour is complete, it is very easy to add the Koloa rum tasting (advance reservation required) and/or a nice lunch at the Gaylords restaurant (reservation recommended) which are both on the grounds. We did all three!

Review is for Train with Walking Orchard Tour and Lunch

By Susan H |

So, this tour had so much potential but for us was a disappointment. First of all the main orchard, where the coconut trees are located, was being sprayed for pests that day and we were only able to visit it at the end of our tour for about 30 minutes or so. Our understanding is that that orchard is the main one where most of the fruit is. The smaller orchard we visited had almost no tropical fruit but mainly citrus. I know fruit is seasonal but…… Second our tour guide was very sweet and friendly but not a great guide. Lexi told us that she just started doing tours on her own. I think she will do fine once she learns more about the orchards (lots of questions couldn’t be answered) and learns how to pace a tour. Often she was way ahead of most of us not recognizing the pace needed for some of us that are older. Lunch was okay but not very hot and one person in our group didn’t get their meal. It was brought to them but caused us to loose a good 15 minutes of tour time in the orchards. Not a bad tour, but needs some improvements and we understand the need to treat the pests impacting the coconut trees, but also feel the tour should have been discounted for that reason as we felt we didn’t get the entire tour. Train ride part was fun and informative.

Family and kid-friendly activity!

By mamalillllll |

We took a 40-minute train ride around the Gaylord property with a big group (10 of us) and it was a very fun family and kid-friendly activity. Be sure to make reservations for it as the train was filled with passengers for our ride!

The train had a tourguide named Kamu, who was SO knowledgeable and funny! He had the best Dad-jokes. He told us all about the orchards, animals and Kuaui history. It was really interesting to learn more about the island. The train is shaded and comfortable, great for a little break from the sun and heat.

Highly recommend this during your visit to the island! Make sure to have lunch at the restaurant afterwards because the food and cocktails are exceptional.

Planation fun

By Linda W |

We made it an afternoon, a train ride, some shopping and a drink at Gaylords, followed by a run tasting. All lovely. The train ride was quite informative and fun and feeding the pigs and horses an added touch.

A train ride back in time

By Joan B |

Took the regular train ride with our adult children and their 2 kids, age 2 and 6. Both the adults and children enjoyed the ride and being able to feed the wild boars, horses and a hilarious cow who kept her tongue out all of the time to receive the food!. There were also interesting facts about the sugar cane industry that were displayed on the side of the building beside the train stop. Would recommend it for families and couples. The local Kauai pamphlet had a coupon in it which you could use online.

Enjoyable

By kmclynnette |

A girlfriend and I were visiting Kauai for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed the train ride and learning about it's history. Feeding the animals may sound a little tame but it was lots of fun. I don't know why feeding and watching animals eat is so enjoyable but it somehow is.

Relaxing, scenic, family-friendly tour

By Prachi G |

This trip takes you on a super cute train ride through the beautiful kilohana plantation. We did the rum tasting, followed by lunch and then hopped on this train as the final stop. Our tour guide was so fun, super informative, and we got to feed a bunch of cute pigs & horses, while learning about the variety of plantations, fruits & flowers. It was super quick and we enjoyed it truly!

More than we expected!!

By Rich4C |

I love trains and my wife tolerates that. We booked a trip and both enjoyed the information and feeding the animals! It was a great tour!

Better than expected

By dbhIII |

We were looking for something to do on a cloudy day and decided to visit the plantation and take the train. The commentary was entertaining and informative. The breadth of the agriculture along the route was surprising and the chance to stop, meet and feed the farm animals (horses, donkey, cows and pigs) was an unexpected treat. Try it - you'll like it.

Great staff and tour

By kmj71 |

Great customer service. We were running late from a delayed flight and they were so kind and accommodating allowing us to reschedule. The entire staff was kind, helpful and professional. The train ride was the perfect length of time for our family.

Hanalei Railroad

By Aiden K Mathias |

Hanalei Railroad in my personal opinion was amazing!!!

As a local boy from O’ahu who’s gone to the Pineapple Plantation on the North side of O’ahu many times and rode the Pineapple Express, I’d say I enjoyed Hanalei Express sooo much more better.

Again not to make comparisons but we had an actual tour guide/speaker he’s name was Kamu not a recording or track record playing.

Kamu made the tour not only enjoyable and entertaining but very educational.

The ride was also exceeding longer on Hanalei Xpress then it was on the Pineapple Xpress. Which in my opinion made it much more enjoyable and worthwhile.

We also saw some local farm animals pua’a (pigs), moa (chickens…lots of them lol), cattle, alpacas, horses and a donkey. The best part was the train made a pit stop at a cute feeding station along the railroad where you actually got to get out and feed the animals which was very cool.

The orchards on the property were amazing as well from Samoan Coconut trees to Tahitian Red tea leaves, Lychee, mango, avocado, Valencia oranges, pineapple, taro, tiare flowers, plumeria, African orange tulip tree, bamboo tree etc. they had all kines.

There is a discount for Kama’aina (residents of Hawaii) which was really nice and affordable. We paid $17 per person which in my opinion is what you would pay nowadays for a plate at L&Ls or at Yummys on Oahu lol. Compared to paying $23 I’d take $17 over that price any day lol.

In the end I honestly enjoyed it very much. Would I recommend this to someone? 100% yes and even more so to the locals if you haven’t whether your from O’ahu, Kaua’i, Hawai’i or any other island try it, it doesnt hurt to learn more about your history and culture!

Kauai Plantation Railway

By way2go |

Super cute for our grand daughter. She LOVED feeding the animals. I loved it too We will come back next time in Kauai.

Beautiful orchard, knowledgeable and talented educator

By romiherron |

Our visit to the Kauai Plantation Railway was one of the most memorable days of our week long stay on the island. The orchards are meticulously maintained, the train is authentic, the staff is professional, and the retail store is also delightful. Our tour guide was an outstanding educator. His name is Kai, and he taught everyone about all the trees, animals, fruits, plants, as well as the history of the plantation. We had a group of teens with their parents on our train...and the family behaved as though we had no tour guide, pulling branches, throwing fruit, talking during the presentations, taking more than their share of the samples, etc...and because they were not paying attention, one of the teens literally ate an inedible leaf and threw up. Kai was very tactful and patient with the family as they did not have the social skills of the rest of the group. Kai sliced the fruit for everyone and made sure we all had a wonderful tour despite the ill mannered tag alongs. I highly recommend the tour and Kai. We loved it.

Guided tour

By lhsjess18 |

Our family loved the walking tour with Bruce! Fruits were delicious and the animal feeding was fun for my daughters. Plantation is a beautiful site!

Orchard Adventure

By mindy Oroscowitt |

Love our experience at the Kauai plantation railway! We did the orchard walk with train ride and what a cool experience. Jason and Kai were th best guides, giving us so much history and info. We tasted fruits right of the tree which has basically ruined all fruit for me forever. Kai also shared a beautiful story about how the Hawaiian people are connected spiritually to Taro and the land for that matter. That story will stay with me always. Beautiful grounds and amazing adventure

My Experience

By tammybauer2025 |

Great experience for adults and children. The walking tour, train ride, and lunch are the best way to experience the Plantation.

A must do!

By CC202302 |

What a fun and informative train ride. It is the perfect way to see the beautiful scenery of the island and the wildlife. I will definitely do this again.

Amazing views

By jennifermoritz389 |

The property was absolutely gorgeous. Great information and history throughout the train ride and tour. We had three children with us and they loved everything.

Ride and Lunch

By esiegler |

The train ride was a good look around the grounds and we were accommodated onto an earlier tour which worked out better for our schedule. The main house and lunch were a highlight, excellent cuisine and great service.

Beautiful, relaxing experience

By Nanette B |

After many trips to Kauai we decided to visit the Plantation. We chose the train ride with lunch. The plantation is absolutely beautiful. The area is pristine. It was so nice to be outside learning about the history, the fruit trees, visiting and giving the animals treats. We only were on the train for a short time and most of the time we walked close to 2 miles. We even picked & sampled the fruit from the different citrus trees. We ordered lunch when we made the reservation and had a picnic complete with tables and an awning. Our docent was Kai who shared his knowledge of the area. He was very enjoyable and we highly recommend the tour.

Fun spot-lots to do here.

By Debhat70 |

We originally visited for the rum tasting at Kōloa Rum but ended up staying for the train ride. Enjoyed the information provided and the animal feeding.

Train and walking tour.

By David O |

We did the 3 and 1/2 hour walking tour.It was very informative. Our tour guide Kai was great. You get to eat several kinds of fruit and take it with you. They feed you and also have animals to feed.I highly recommend this tour. The train ride was awesome also.

Really fun family outing

By SaraThome |

We had a great time on the railway. We were looking for a somewhat quick, affordable, family friendly activity (we were 2 families with 3 kids each, all under 8 years old) and this was perfect! The kids loved the train and seeing all the animals - and so did the adults! The feeding was fun and a great little break in the ride. We ended up having lunch at the restaurant because we were all in such a good mood after the ride. Would deffinitely recommend to other families, especially those with young children. Thanks for a great event!

Plantation train tour fun!

By Safari669066 |

We traveled with other couples with kids and it was a nice trip. Candy shop for kids, gift shop for adults! Should have booked the luau!

Enjoyable narrated train ride on plantation

By FENTON64 |

You are best to make reservations for the train especially on days the cruise ship is in port. The cruise ship booked the entire train so we had to return the following day and then made a reservation. We had no idea it was such a popular attraction on the island. It was an enjoyable narrated train ride around the plantation with a stop to feed the animals. They provided food for the animals at no additional charge. We found it fun to feed the animals. The children really seemed to enjoy it too. The train ride was a little pricey but there are discount coupons in the tourist magazines and they also offer a senior discount.

Fun Feeding Animals, Less then excited Tour Guide

By cordovakaylei |

The only reason we gave three stars is that our daughter thoroughly enjoyed feeding the animals. The tour guide could have done a lot better to make this a more enjoyable experience. The greeting could have been a lot more friendly. I get that this is something you do every day, but the customers is what keeps your job secured and most of the time it’s their first experience. A little politeness, enthusiasm, and friendly demeanor goes along way.

Our guide was a very, very good guy by Josh

By AKWildflowers |

** review written by ten year old Josh**

The fruit was good -Our guide Bruce was a very, very good guide he was a very good guide. The train was very fun and you got to feed the pigs and the horses and the sheep and much more you got pick the ripe fruit you see and I think the right thing to do is bring a bag because the fruit yum Yum the fruit was delicious. He seem to know a lot. He is a lot better than the botanical garden. Do not recommend the botanical garden. Definitely this place. We’re going back for sure. You will definitely come back. Our guide was phenomenal. Highly recommend this place. The fruit is the best part of the door and the train it was. It was the best. I hope we come back. I’m probably not gonna be able to eat dinner. It was the best place we’ve been at yet

First train ride

By Quie0911 |

Enjoyed taking first train ride for my great grandchildren. Their first of many to come. The excitement on their faces seeing the pigs and horses and also feeding them. It was an awesome fun time. Can't wait to take them for another train ride.

Choo choo

By dmvbelectronics |

Nice old 1948 150 hp GE diesel/electric loco, very aggressive pigs. Staff encouraged feeding chickens, which is discouraged elsewhere on the island.

Fun

By Brad P |

For $23, the train tour was cute and fun. It had information for adults and kids. Kid loved feeding the animals. Guide was friendly and easygoing.

Fun experience

By Ashley M |

Fun, easy thing to do for the whole family (7 year old, 2 parents and 2 grandparents). We really enjoyed feeding the animals and the pineapple ice cream after the train ride. Our train ride announcer was fun and had some great dad jokes. Worth it, especially if trying to do something before heading to the airport.

Yawn

By Anne R |

If you are under 12 probably ok. 40 minutes supposedly but 20 minutes of that is feeding their livestock. No real history lesson, just some general information with A LOT of self advertising about everything else there.

Train fun - staff not so much

By Kim S |

The plantation is beautiful and the train is fun. The staff was not feeling the Aloha spirit. The lady at the check in window gave clear instructions and I followed them but did not get a ticket. Keep in mind that I have never been here before.. the conductor wanted my ticket and I did not have it. My daughter had to go back to get it. It isn't what happened because it wasn't a big deal.. it was the way it happened and the tone.
Then my grandson and daughter were in the gift shop and a staff member said "get out we are closed". What? Not a problem she spent here money someplace else.
It was just a weird vibe.

Family-friendly train ride

By Brad P |

This was an enjoyable, narrated train ride through the plantation. The kids enjoyed the stop to feed the horses and pigs.

A great experience on Kauai!

By Vacation62449815929 |

This is a beautiful ride for adults and children. The grounds are lovely The narrator was fantastic and provided lots of history. Highly recommended!

Great for a family!

By Olivia H |

This was a fantastic excursion for myself, my husband, and our 18 month old daughter. It was so fun to learn about the plants that are grown on the island. Feeding the animals was a perfect activity for our daughter, and she loved it! All around a great activity we would highly recommend for a family.

Great place to visit!!!

By Ann W |

What a wonderful place to visit!!! The train ride was more then worth it! They SAVE animals! Now all their animals get the best of the best!!! The restaurant Bar is a site of beauty you do not want to miss!

Relaxing activity. Must do if you like animals.

By bibpanana |

Train ride included a stop in which you got to pet the horses and cows, and also feed them and the wild boars which was nice.

Train ride itself was 40 minutes- really nice activity to decompress and relax. Includes narration with fun facts about the island and the plantation itself.

Totally enjoyable. Bring the little ones.

By Daahris |

Interesting sugar plantation history in a beautiful setting. We were limited on time and only came for the train ride but there is rum tasting, a pineapple shack (I had a tasty pineapple tea), and a restaurant - it was closed as we were there on a Sunday. Loved the historic photos and story about the sugar plantation. We boarded the train - roofed open car with great ability to see - and departed on time. Our conductor and narrator was Tiny and he was a hoot with his jokes and puns as we tootled along. The ride is short - 40 minutes, but perfect. The sugar plantation is no more, but the number and variety of trees in the orchard is immense. Great for younger kids too. Very enjoyable and worth your time and money.

Train Ride only

By Sarah H |

As a family we all enjoyed the train ride. For those that complain about paying $20 for the ticket why come to Hawaii then. It’s not cheap to be here in the first place, just saying. The ride was very informative and the guy who was speaking was hilarious and made it super fun! Also, added bonus feeding the animals mid ride was great!!

Excelent train activity!

By Georgina L |

A train ride for the whole family, fun and we learned about the fruit harvest, we feed the horses, cows and pigs.
The train is clean and well maintained.

FAMILY FUN

By lisaG2652XD |

My husband and I visited Kauai for the first time. We took the basic train ride. This was a nice relaxing day for our busy week. Our host was friendly, knowledgeable and fun! The grounds are beautiful, watching the kids feed the animals was cute. Budget friendly.

Took my grandson to see the animals and he loved it. We live on Kauai but this was our first time going and I wish I’d taken him sooner.

Family fun.

By Ky Trang H |

We had a blast feeding the horses, donkey and pigs. The train ride is quite relaxing. I recommend getting a pineapple Dole whip afterward.

Fun, interesting adventure!

By Michelle P |

My husband and I took the train/nature walk and really enjoyed ourselves. Jason was our tour guide. He was great, very personable, helpful, and knowledgeable.
We toured the orchards and learned about the agriculture and history of the plantation. Lunch was included, and we had many delicious choices. Far more than the usual boxed lunch with a sandwich.
We got to feed some of the farm animals, too.
The biggest bonus was getting g to pick and keep the seasonal fruit from the orchard. In November, there were several different orange varieties, star fruit and more.
We found this to be a unique and fun little adventure. We definitely recommend.

Must do in Kauai!

By Kaci B |

We had the best time at the Plantation Railway. We did the 3hr walking tour and train ride and it was so much fun!

Our highlights were:
- the staff is exceptional. So friendly, funny and welcoming. Bruce was our train guide and Lexi was our walking tour guide. Both super friendly and knowledgeable.
- getting to try the local fruit grown on property. Part of the walking tour includes walking through the orchards picking the fruit off the trees and trying it. Lychee was our favorite, as were their version of cutie oranges, so yummy! Lexi was scaling trees to get us the best fruit!
- feeding the animals (pigs, cows, horses, alpacas). Our 2-year old really enjoyed feeding the animals and riding the train.

Overall we had a wonderful time and highly recommend you check out the plantation railway! They also have a restaurant and rum tasting onsite as well but we didn’t have time to check those out. Thanks for a great day!!

Great for kids and adults!

By alyssatravels619 |

My son is obsessed with trains so we had to try this! He not only loved it but my husband and I enjoyed listening to the guide who gave us really cool history and facts about the plantation all while sneaking in jokes only the adults would know. The staff is great and would highly recommend!

Perfect for Me!

By janessa78 |

As a lover of farming & gardening this was the perfect way to spend 40 minutes before our near by rum tasting. The history lesson while cruising the tracks on the open but covered railcar was informative & entertaining. Our guide was cheery & surprised me with some orchard fruit to celebrate my bday. That was an unexpected sweet surprise. The only thing that stained the experience was the grumpy lady at check in, that gave us our tickets. She seemed to be having a rough morning, we're all human & can relate, I guess. I wouldn't let that deter me from going again, stuff happens. The critter encounter was a real treat & probably my fav part as I made friends with a horse & a cute bull. This is a great activity for the kiddos & kids at heart as well!

Great 3 hour tour of grounds

By mgs1627 |

We took the 3 hour walking tour. We learned a lot about the native plants & animals. Tasted a lot of citrus fruit right off the tree. We preordered a box lunch which was part of the tour. We also got to taste liquid sugar right from the cane/stalk. Our tour guide, Kia, was fantastic. His extensive knowledge of Hawaii and all the aspects of the plantation made this tour an unforgettable experience.

Luau

By jestch0619 |

Crowed in table, food not worth it. Not friendly directing table to eat. Too long sitting. Took off while show was long. Felt cheated after paying almost 1000 bucks for 4. Not worth it for me. I was 😡 paying so much for the experience.

Great Experience!

By courtney2025 |

Our family did the train ride prior to attending the luau at Kauai Plantation, and it exceeded my expectations! I love actually learning some of the history of the locations I visit, and our guide was great! Lots of history and info, while keeping it light and fun. The animals were an added bonus, and the kids loved feeding them!

Great day!

By Scot M |

Our guide Jason was friendly knowledgeable and very accommodating to everyone’s needs. The tour was very comfortable, informative and an experience you should not miss. Lunch was delicious, and feeding the animals was surprisingly entertaining. Don’t forget to bring a bag or backpack to load up on some delicious fruit during the tour!

Very enjoyable!

By coleenshaver |

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the 40 minute train ride. It was very informative. Loved the explanation of plantings, environmental issues, sustainability, and the animals....especially feeding them! I hope the possibility of a farmer's market at the plantation will come to fruition.

Do not go here. Waste of time.

By Explorer50918328890 |

Waste of time. Lasted 5 min. No history about the plantation. No sites to see. No views. One stop to feed ugly stinky wild pigs and cows that slobber all over. And the restaurant was bad too. Good was terrible. Do not go here. Many more enjoyable things to do and places to eat on this island.

Orchard Walk

By Matolckcam |

Bruce was an excellent tour guide for the walk through orchard and grounds. We enjoyed gaining knowledge about all the fruit. Especially being able to pick & eat organic fruit right off the tree. Wish we would have down this tour earlier in our visit to Kauai.

Wonderful cultural experience. Very informative.

By Bob S |

This is a great way to experience the agriculture and farming of Kauai. The guide tells you a lot and shares a great deal of humor with the ride. The entire ride is in the shade of the rail car. All ages will enjoy the ride. You will see many different tropical plants, some farm life, and you may even see the Safari running around. We did get to feed the chickens, pigs, horses, and cows?

Awesome Train Ride

By LRT_808 |

The train ride was great, was nice and cool and the best part was feeding the animals.

Would highly recommend and I would ride the train again the next time I’m on Kauai.

Train tour

By jackman2024 |

The train tour was the perfect length of time and is affordable. You get to feed the pigs, horses and poultry. We were fortunate to see a tiny piglet get a piece of the tortilla. He then embarked on a very funny and challenging run with a lot of other pigs chasing after him. One couldn't help but cheer him on. Perhaps, the one thing that could be improved is adding some signage for the trees that they point out.

Outstanding Lunch and tour

By R_o_d_D_0_0_1 |

The folks did a wonderful job supporting our grandchildren during the tour, keeping them engaged, and providing a lot of information and fruit to taste. The lunch was handled with care even with so food restrictions (gluten-free). Highly recommend their tour.

Family of 14 has wonderful time on Train and lunch.

By Claudia H |

Our family of 14, including a one year old, had a wonderful time on the train/lunch excursion. Kai was our excellent guide. Lunch was tasty and they accommodated our food allergies. It was one of the few things we could all do with the baby. Even the older teens loved it and learned something new.

So much fun and learned so much.

By Cheryl B |

It was a wonderful day at the Kauai Plantation. We choose the plantation tour and lunch. Learned so much, got to eat some fruit off the trees, fed and learned about about the animals and much, much, more. I would recommend this to anyone.

Nice place to spend a day in Kauai

By Jeff Y |

The train was only 40 min and covered the plantation grounds. Active farming and livestock which contributes to the great food at the restaurant, Gaylords. They also make very good rum, so its a very good place to spend a day drinking nice rum drinks, eat farm to table meals, and stroll around the plantation with a train ride.

Train, Lunch, Orchard Adventure!

By Sandy |

We really enjoyed our garden tour with Tiny. He was very informative and knew everything about every plant. We got to eat a variety of Hawaiian fruits and other fruits from around the world. I love the fact that the extra fruit grown at the plantation is donated to local schools and the hospital. Just be aware that the Train, Lunch, Orchard Adventure! is a lot of walking and not much train riding. Overall, a great experience.

Frequent rider

This is a very pleasant ride and narration for the whole family. The stop to feed the animals was fun for all ages. This is a must!

Fun family friendly train ride

By CJC |

This was fun, family friendly, informational train ride. We passed by lots of fruit trees, learned about some history and then got to feed cows, horses and pigs! This is great for all ages!

Kauai plantation railway

By ktnmark2025 |

Slower paced tour which is great for young children. My 6 year old is still talking about the plants he learned about and Stiney the donkey.

Entertaining and novel

By redondopal |

Pleasant ride on an open-air train car, entertaining history and culture stories, and up close to the island interior. Visit with the farm animals was so delightful and charming!

Great experience

By Nelly |

Be ready to feed the animals and take lots of photos. Sit in the open air cart to be able to feel the breeze and smell the air.

Great experience

By Christey313 |

We took the train and walking tour of the plantation. It was a very good experience. Our tour guide,Kai, was amazing. So knowledgable about the plantation and Kauai history. He answered all our questions and made the tour entertaining. We were able to taste all the fruits and feed the animals. Such a good time. I definitely recommend seeing the plantation this way.

Would Recommend

By Patricia F |

100% worth it love the values of the current plantation, keeping the animals safe in the sanctuary and also growing food to donate to food banks is pretty incredible beyond that the tour guides were knowledgeable and fun and kind. We got to feed cows and wild pigs as part of the experience. We learned about the island history and culture and ended the tour with a lovely meal and a dole whip.

Insightful and entertaining train ride

By panim222024 |

My wife and I enjoyed the train ride for the following reasons:
1) an entertaining and informative tour guide - he even thanked us for putting up with his Dad jokes
2) key information about the plantation and its history, which also relates to Kauai’s history in general
3) were able to see some of the fruit trees on the plantation, as well as learn about the many non-native trees to Kauai that are now prominent features of the landscape
4) saw some of the animals on the plantation, as well as were able to participate in feeding the horses, cows and wild pigs - all very safe as the animals are behind a fence

All this helped fill in some gaps for us, or confirm other information we had been told about Kauai’s history.

AWESOME FAMILY ATTRACTION

By jenningsshynell |

Shoutout to KAMU for making our experience AWESOME! Very knowledgeable & funny! We will definitely be back! MAHALO KAMU

Nice train ride for small children

By Stephen P |

This was the second yearly experience with our grandsons now age 5 and almost 3. They have enjoyed the trip and learning about the different trees and feeding the horses donkeys and pigs each time.

Plantation Train Ride

By Dee D |

This was a quick 40 minute train trip around a working farm plantation. Great for kids and adults alike. During the tour, the train stops and everyone can take turns feeding pigs, horses and mules feed provided by the farm. You pass the crops and animals while taking a narrated ride through the plantation

Great train experience

By MARIA M |

Our plantation tour guide was awesome!! Very interesting, entertaining, knowledgeable & considerate. The food was delicious, it was a great experience, will definitely recommend.

Nice trip.

By royaldd |

Fun little guided train tour. Loved feeding the pigs and horses.Enjoyed learning about the island, animals and plants and trees.

So Much Fun AND Educational!

By euniquesnackster |

Kai was awesome, as was Bruce. We enjoyed the train ride as well as the tour around the plantations. Too bad there were not more fruit in-season. Kai is a great storyteller and he was excellent with my kids.

Great for kids!!~

By G8837ZBinfo |

My gamily recently visited Kauai with our small grandson and he loved the train. It stops and allows the kids to feed the animals. The grounds are beautiful, and we would go on the train again when we are back on that island. Very reasonably priced and there is a great little food truck to get ice cream and coffee right there afterwards.

Fun for all ages! Professional and dynamic show with great selection of food!

By Janet |

19 of us from 10-74 really enjoyed this! The train was fun and informative, open air car was nice! Feeding animals was fun for all! Learning about crops and fruits was interesting! The luau dinner was really good, lots of the kids liked the fish and chicken. Adults mentioned the fish and pork! Plenty of food to enjoy! Salad was very fresh and you could ask for more. The drinks were pretty strong which was a plus. Haha! The small shops were a hit and attracted lots of lookers. The hula show was the best I’ve seen! The costumes were authentic and elaborate! The performers were so pretty and handsome and talented. We loved the story, the wave dancer and the ship mast. The fire dancers and eater were amazing and talented! Singing was beautiful! We had a great time all together and a plus, everyone got a lei…ladies a fresh orchid lei and the men and boys a sea shell lei! Great event!

Don’t Miss Attraction in Kauai

By Snider577 |

Knowing we were visiting Kauai a friend recommended we visit here. The railroad ride and tour was a delightful experience with knowledgeable and witty narration from the on board guide. Not only did we see and learn about the local flora and farming but we also discovered that this an animal sanctuary with a large number of indigenous and rescue animals including horses, cows and dozens and dozens of pigs. There were even some goats, donkeys etc mixed in. The highlight of the trip is a stop to feed the critters who flock to the train as soon as they hear it coming and the passengers can exit to feed them appropriate fodder (we never knew how much pigs love tortillas!). In addition to the train and other tours offered here the highlight of our visit was the circa 1930’s home of the original owner of the plantation which includes an an excellent restaurant, shops and best of all a period furnished and decorated barroom where guests can enjoy drinks made from the on site distillery and delicious pupus. The bar is one of the finest rooms we’ve ever had the pleasure to enjoy. Overall this is one of the most fun and affordable venues you’ll find in Hawaii. Highly recommended.

Ohana Time

By tammiek1962 |

We just love the interaction with the animals ,we live on Oahu in the city so the keikis don't really have a chance to see live stock. and ride a train!!! They were so excited eveytime we come which is at least twice a year.

Fun kid friendly activity in Kauai

By Rachel G |

We had an overcast, rainy day in Kauai so we decided to try this train tour. It was super fun! Our kids (2 yr and 4 yr) loved riding on the train and stopping to feed the animals. It was a great way to spend a couple hours when the weather wasn't great for the beach/pool.

Very entertaining

By garciay411 |

Our guide was very funny. We had a great time and learned a lot about the the history and different plants on the plantation.

Recommended for families!

By Joan C |

What a fun tour! We chose the 3.5 hour plantation tour. We went with a 2.5 year old and 4 year old and it was perhaps 20 minutes too long but overall very fun and we would do it again. We rented a wagon, which we used quite a bit.
The tour started on the train, then we got off and walked through various fruit orchards, picking and tasting along the way. Some of the fruits we were able to pick included star fruit, longan, langsat (unique and the kids liked it), Valencia oranges, and sugar cane. There was a lunch break, then we fed horses, pigs, cows, and alpacas. Afterward, the train picked us up and we rode back to the entrance.

Our train guide was Kamu and our plantation guide was Kai. They were both entertaining and personable, and we had a great time!

A delightful train ride

A great 40-minute tour

By Cameron Y |

This is a fun and educational tour that I'd highly recommend. The 40 minutes flew by. Unfortunately, the pineapple ice cream shop was closed the day we were there, but lunch at Gaylord's (on-site) was fabulous. A beautiful setting and superb food.

A great family day out

By John |

We had a great time as the plantation. It was great to see so many families having a great time too, learning about the various harvests and of course feeding the animals.

Plantation Visit

The walking tour with Kai was exceptional. We had done only the 40 minute train ride last year and came back for the complete for this year. The picnic lunch was surprisingly good.

Great Family train ride

By Tara L |

Great start to our night! Kamu and Camilla were so much fun and informative! Truly enjoyed the train ride with our family.

Kai is the best!

By Sarah M |

This was a surprisingly informative and interesting tour. Our guide Kai had a phenomenal breadth and depth of knowledge. As we walked through the plantation Kai gave us a geological, historical and cultural overview of Kauai. We got to eat a wonderful array of fruit right off the trees. We even took several valencia oranges home for cocktail hour. Wide age group on the tour and everyone seemed to enjoy. The littlest kids were definitely into the fruiit eating and sucking on sugar cane.

Well Worth Your Time & Money

By coachbev |

We thoroughly enjoyed our Kauai Plantation Railway tour and the Kilohana Luau that followed. We learned a lot from the tour guide and the slow journey through the plantation was loaded with lots to see. The Kilohana Luau was such a pleasant surprise. It was story telling, energetic, colorful and very entertaining. The food was exceptional and so was the Rum Punch!!

Pleasant train ride

By liamH8860SQ |

The Kauai Plantation Railway provides a pleasant journey through the gardens of a former sugar plantation. As the train slowly meanders its way along there is plenty of time to appreciate the natural vegetation and the orchards that pass by. The train stops to allow passengers to get off and feed some domestic horses and donkeys as well as feral pigs. That makes this an excellent activity for families with small children.

Great Plantation tour

By Mobile20476324088 |

Kauai Plantation Railway was a great ride through the plantation. A lot of history and learning about the plants of Kauai. Learning about the sugar cane industry and it's demise!

A fun and delicious tour

By sanddmount |

We have done this tour at least 3 times over the years with different friends. It is always great and different depending on the time of year and what fruits are ripe at the time. The guides are great, knowledgeable and entertaining.

Quick activity

The train ride was about 40 mins total. Was nice to hear the history of the plantation. Our son liked the animals. Thought it was a bit pricey for the adventure, however.

Amazing - But We Just Missed Certain Fruit Seasons

By shineandcriss |

Paul Foti was an amazing tour guide. A+ rating for the dad jokes as well. My wife and I came back to the island to celebrate our 20th anniversary and we enjoyed the railway / orchard tour and feeding the animals. Walking around this amazing property with Paul and the other guests was fun.

We tasted some amazing oranges, picked right off the trees and had a great lunch with fresh cut sugar cane to sample.

My only wish is that we arrived a few months sooner so we could have sampled some of the other fruits and avocados which we were a bit too late for.

Perfect adventure with the kids!

By kellee1963 |

We needed a respite from the beach and this was perfect! Our tour guide on the train was very knowledgeable and friendly. Feeding the pigs, cows and horses was a huge highlight!!

Support Locals and Go Here!

By Courtney P |

This was my second time here and my mom's first time.

I really enjoy the guide sharing all the history and info about the plantation. It was funny, informative and enjoyable. We got to feed the pigs, horses and cows. We never felt rushed. Well Worth It

Had a great time on the Plantation Railway. The conductor provided great insight into the history of the plantation and how it’s been developed. Enjoyed that aspect but we stopped to feed these amazing animals…again, the conductor and his fellow engineer provided commentary on the animals…all in all enjoyed this. Would be a big hit with families as well.

Wonderful Leisurely Tour of Orchard and Farm

By Abby E |

Wonderful leisurely tour of their orchard and farm, we loved it! Especially loved the time set aside for feeding the animals.

Not as expected, too $$

By Companion741678 |

For the price paid you think you will have better selection of food, specially for kids, we end up leaving to go feed the kids somewhere else

fun for entire family

By gary h |

really fun for our family including our 2 year old grandson. We expected the train ride to be a little longer but enjoyed the experience : 2 hour walk and tour through the orchards, picking and eating lots of fresh fruit, petting the animals , and the history and agricultural information shared by guide Kai .

Fun, Interesting, Yummy!

By Michael R |

This was one of the highlights of our trip. Bruce was an amazing tour guide. The train ride was fun, but the real magic was in the nature walk. Feeding the animals, sampling the fruits, and hearing Bruce’s personal stories about the island was really charming. The timing of the tour was spot on, and lunch was really nice. Everything but suntan lotion and a hat was provided, included bug spray and cold drinks. I highly recommend this tour to families, couples, and anyone who has an interest in having a guided walk.

Fun for everyone

By Steve A |

A fun train ride thru the plantation, with lots of info, sights, and a petting area with donkeys, horses, and pigs. Theres also a bar, fine dining, gift shops, and a candy stand. Lots to do.

Great experience. Rick the conductor was funny and entertaining, great commentary as we toured around the property and orchards. We had good fun feeding the donkey, horses and wild pigs. By B B |

This was very low impact fun. The train goes slow and you get to enjoy the plantation, it is very diverse and the guide pointed out a lot of different plants and crops. you do get to feed some animals! Light and easy fun.

Day trip with kids

By Russell E |

I thought this was just a wonderful experience for my family and I. It began with a 20 minute train ride, which drove us to the fruit orchard. Our tour guide, Lexi, was extremely knowledgeable about the fruits, and we enjoyed trying each of them. After that, the lunch was very good, I highly recommend the fish sandwich. We then fed the animals and did the sugarcane farm. After that, we got back on the train back to the depot. Both the adults and the children thoroughly enjoyed this experience and I would recommend this 10 out of 10 times.

Awesome

Wonderful to hear about the history of the plantation and farm and other local history. Hiking through the grounds and picking/tasting the local fruits was a treat as was feeding the farm animals.

Excellent family outing!

By Candace B |

The 40 minute railway trip was a great experience and the perfect amount of fun for our family and friends. Between us we had 4 kids ages 3-11yo. We loved the tour guide’s detailed history, explanations of plants and animals on the farm, and ESPECIALLY the stop to hand feed the animals. Even the adults had a blast. We would highly recommend taking time to do this excursion while visiting Kauai. :)

One of the best outings on the island

By lala_reviews |

On a whim, my family decided to visit the plantation as a new and interesting experience to do on the island- we were extremely impressed and satisfied with everything offered: train ride, orchard picking of various fruits (I even drank cashew juice), lunch, feeding the animals, and eating sugar cane. It was a few hours worth of fun and experiences we couldn’t have had anywhere else. Our young son (3) loved all of it too. Definitely recommend to families. It was a highlight of our trip!

It was so much fun! Our tour guide was funny and upbeat. We made a stop and had the opportunity to feed the horses, donkey, cows and pigs. Definitely something to do when visiting Kauai

fun trip

By micheleaz |

The actual train ride is quite short but well worth the visit. Staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. The receptionist was very helpful in providing information prior to our arrival and getting us ticketed. The gentleman who conducted our trip covered many subjects ranging from natural and human history to movies. The train passes through pastures where rescued animals are cared for, gardens, orchards and native wild forest/jungle during which plants and trees are identified and importance, uses, ,etc described. . As part of the trip the train stops by a fenced enclosure where kids are allowed to feed the animals (horses and native pigs). Our 5 year old great grandson loved all of it plus the ice cream. We enjoyed learning about Kauai and its history. It was a great place to spend an hour on our way to the airport. Highly recommended.

Train ride is nice and scenic. Our tour guide, Bruce, was super cool, knowledgeable and a great person overall. I loved the fruit picking and being able to use the wood fruit picker tool. Loved visiting all the animals, super cute alpacas. The food served for lunch was delicious. I ordered the fish sandwich and my boyfriend ordered the salad and we shared. Yummy! Overall a really wonderful day spent. Highly recommend if you're into agriculture, beautiful scenery, farm life, and animals. Make sure to grab a Pinapple Whip on the way out.

Train ride and orchard walk

By Donna T |

We went on the train ride and orchard walk with lunch. Paul was our guide and he was amazing. He was very knowledgeable about the plantation and Hawaiian islands. During our walk we got caught in a wild rain pour and we still had a great time. I have medical issues and Paul continually checked in with me to see if I was okay. It was a great day and I highly recommend this excursion while on Kauai.

By Pamela P |

This was our third time on the plantation Railroad train. Not the best of three Experiences are narrator, was more focused on himself, his musical career, and the stars that he met. Did not mention much about how the plantation used to run or very much about the agriculture. Was it disappointing Event

What a Fun train ride!

By MsVic |

What a fun experience! The train was so much fun and very authentic replica! The tour of the plantation was very beautiful and interesting. Loved seeing all the different crops and plants, but the highlight for us were the animals! Nice to see the various animals on the property and what a treat to actually stop and get to feed them! Getting up close and personal was a nice addition to the train ride, and adults and kids alike were enjoying them! Our conductor Karelia was very informative not only on the history of the plantation, but on sustainable farming today. Loved our experience! Would highly recommend!

We loved it!

We took the full tour Train / guided walk with lunch. Our guide was very knowledgeable. I would recommend sitting further back from the train engine it’s loud. We walked through the orchard learning about the fruits flowers and plants. Of course the favorite part was picking and eating fruits. The animals were fun and interactive.

Don’t hesitate to go for a train ride…you won’t regret it!

I can’t remember the name of our guide/driver but he was so funny, passionate and caring about the animals and the work in the property that he made us feel part of the project. The train itself is beautiful, my 2 years old daughter had a blast feeding the animals and I went crazy gift shopping in the little gift store by the train station…so many original pieces! A must go in Kauai 😍

Train ride with guide around the plantation

By hoffmanteacher2 |

It was an excellent way to learn the history of the sugar plantations with some fun shops and restaurant too. Good for all ages and great for people with mobility issues.

Good One-Time Experience

By MartyM56 |

We had a really nice time and it was interesting to learn about the crops raised there. Feeding the animals was also a lot of fun. All your animals are very charismatic. We would have enjoyed a bit more in-depth info about the flora and fauna.

Our guide, Paul, said a few things that were not entirely accurate. We saw some jungle chickens eating oranges and he said something about chickens loving oranges, but you’re not supposed to feed your domestic chickens too much citrus.

He also said that pigs and bears are closet related because they share the same phylum. This is accurate, but, the phylum they share is ‘chordata’ which means they have a spinal column, making them equally close to things like fish. More accurate to say they are both mammals, which isn’t really that close.

Also the ‘monkey no climb tree’ is called a locust tree, related to legumes/beans which might be cool to tell people

Learning about the leaves that can’t catch on fire and their traditional uses was awesome. I enjoyed the plant with flowers that taste like mushrooms. He has good info about alpacas coming from Peru. I would have liked more info about taking care of cold-weather livestock like alpacas and sheep in a humid, tropical climate such how to keep their wool and hooves healthy.

Lunch was pretty good ( bring extra salad dressing please!) and overall the trip was worthwhile. I would recommend the trip be shortened by an hour as we could have easily done everything in a bit less time. Paul was a nice guy, good storyteller and we enjoyed the train conductor a lot, too.

Fun for all ages!

By Jaime S |

We rode the train to take the tour of the plantation prior to the rum tasting. It was a fun and informational ride. I’m an animal lover so feeding the animals was the highlight but it was also neat to learn about what was growing on site.

Great visit!

By Joanne N |

Bruce was an excellent guide!
Enjoyed our walk thru the orchard trying the different fruits. Star fruit was our favorite! Yummy!
Lunch was delicious, just sorry the rain cut our visit short.
We had a great time despite the rain!

Meh

By Ilene P |

Tired and not the "historic" working plantation as advertised. Touristy and not well done. Focused more on feeding farm animals than anything else.

Not worth the cost and way too short.

By martyn |

Very expensive and way too short for the cost. The whole trip, including feeding the animals (pigs, a few horses and a cow) takes 35 minutes.

The chap doing the tour is very talkative but tells you more about his life (DJ, ex band member) than he does about the plants. You go past the plants so fast you don't have time to take in anything he does tell you.

Wouldn't recommend this.

Book the Manor House Experience to enjoy good food and front row seats for the luau.

By Scott T |

We booked the Manor House Experience which included a 3-course meal at the Manor House, and front row seating at the Luau Kalamaku. The food was plentiful and delicious, served with Cava, a Spanish sparkling wine. The luau was spectacular with history, props and beautiful dancing from men and women.

Poor visit

By elizabethhouser22 |

I had been on the steam train 1 year ago and it was great. We took our friends who had never been on it. The person doing the tour did not go into the history of Kilohana Farms. We could barely hear him over the clanking of the train and crying babies. Suggestion to put adults without babies in the first car so we can hear the narrative and not clanking of train and babies crying.

A very pleasant few hours spent

By Gary H |

Very enjoyable little tour of a beautiful area. Open air car was comfortable with a nice breeze. Informative and heartfelt narration. Such a well maintained property and while Gaylord’s restaurant was too pricey for our budget, it was very nice to be able to walk around and imagine what it must have been like back in the day when sugar was king.

Last Minute Fun

By aimlalou |

We were looking for something fun to do last minute with our kiddos on vacation and had been told about this plantation and the train ride. We decided to book tickets a couple of hours before our ride and we are so glad we did. It was a knowledgeable experience, fun, and family friendly! Our favorite part was feeding the animals!

Not entertaining or educational.

By Brien B |

The description indicates;

“You’ll be entertained and educated by our fun loving conductors, and amazed when you see our rows of over 50 varieties of fruit tree orchards, fruit fields, vegetable gardens, rare and exotic tropical flowers, forest, plants, hardwood trees, and animal pastures with donkeys, goats, sheep, horses, cattle, ducks, geese, and our fun loving herd of wild pigs. The train will stop and you can disembark and feed our wild pigs, goats and sheep.”

We may or may not have seen some of these. Other than the farm animals, none of them were pointed out except some taro “off in the distance”, and one cashew tree. The entire rest of the “tour” consisted of a barely understandable guy telling us all about his personal relationship with all the old movie stars that he has met and a whole bunch of banter about the pigs he really seemed hung up on. Absolutely nothing informational and not even entertaining. Very disappointed.

Train Ride w/ local history, botanical gardens, and animals

By Sydney BT |

This was a wonderful way to kick off our week in Kauai. Our tour guide was entertaining and taught us a lot about the history of the island. He pointed out many different fruit trees and animals. A clear highlight was when we got to feed some of the local animals.

A very informative tour

By amstutzkeith |

A very fun day learning about the fruit trees, plants, tasting fruits etc. Our kids had fun feeding the animals!!

Afternoon fun

By Goboltz |

Thoroughly enjoyed this excursion. It was a last-minute booking because transportation was canceled to the state parks due to weather. It was a great balance between cost and time. A 45 minute train ride for a great price that was enjoyable to see the crops, flowers, and time at the petting zoo. We had a delicious lunch at the plantation house afterwards, which was Delightful. We had fun cruising the shops- rum shop. The sweet shop And various souvenir stores on site. Great excursion and great activity if weather is rainy

Wonderful train ride and luau

By AndrewHal1980 |

The Plantation Railway and luau were really great. The tour on the train was a lot of fun - plenty to see and the chance to feed some hungry pigs, horses and cows, and a donkey.

The luau was really good, the open bar drinks were great, the food was yummy and plenty of it - literally more than you can eat.

The main show at the end of the night was very entertaining and professional quality. A really fun and enjoyable night out.

We went with our young kids (5 & 7 yo) and they also loved it.

Even Better Than Expected!

By Deblynch23 |

What a wonderful tour! We booked the railway plus the walking tour. I highly recommend you do both, especially the walking tour. It was not a lot of walking but we were able to walk through the beautiful orchards. Our tour guide, Bruce, was absolutely amazing! We were able to pick our own fruits right off the trees, at least 10 different types, many I have never heard of, and all were soooo delicious. He provides such a wonderful explanation of all of the trees and fruits. We then were able to feed the donkeys and pigs and loved seeing the baby piglets who were only a few weeks old! All of the animals seem to be taken care of so well and the grounds were meticulously maintained. We ended the tour with an add-on rum tasting which was also very good (not like those BS tequila tastings on some of the Caribbean islands with fake tequila). It was a really wonderful tour. Thank you Bruce!

Great family experience

By Emmeline E |

Booked this excursion specifically for my 9 year old son who loves trains and my 3 year old nephew. They had a blast. We signed up for the train ride around the plantation with stop to feed the animals. Conductor was knowledgeable and family friendly. Open air cars but weather was fabulous. Would highly recommend for a family with young kids.

Fun hour on the Plantation

By jamasonks |

The train was a fun ride. Feeding the animals was a hoot. Watching the chickens and pigs run after the food was hilarious. The cows were also fun.

the best experience!

By ClaudiajoLumperdean |

I was there with my toddler and my husband and we really enjoyed every moment of our tour. From testing all the tropical fruits they have to petting and feeding the animals, was an absolute blast!

Fun ride around the plantation

By Al B. |

This was a fun but short ride around the edges of the plantation. I would have liked some signage on the plants that we saw - the tour guide told us what we were seeing but sometimes it did not line up with when our train car went by them. Also, the stop to feed the farm animals was a bit longer than needed for me but fun for the kids who were on the train.

Island farm fun

By Stephanie M |

We chose this activity specifically with our 4 year old and 6 year old in mind - but we were pleasantly surprised how much us grown ups enjoyed it as well. We picked fresh fruit from trees, walked around the beautiful plantation, fed a variety of animals, and enjoyed the clouds hanging over the mountains in the distance. The provided lunch was quite tasty. The train ride was fun and our tour guide Paul was fantastic. This is a great activity for a family or couple.

Train ride and lunxh

By barbaracnelson |

We had a wonderful time on the plantation train ride. The kids really enjoyed feeding all the animals. We also ate at Gaylord’s and had a wonderful lunch! Would definitely visit this plantation again.

Plantation Railway - Really a Pig feeding tour

By Jeff T |

Booked the train with another couple, thinking it would be fun. Unfortunately it was not.

Train ride itself was fine but very boring. Limited things to see. Ride was to be 40min. We stopped for 20min to feed the pigs on the plantation.

This ride is geared for the very young (age 7 and under) or the elderly.

Roamed the grounds and there was limited things to see as well.

I would suggest looking at alternatives.

Train Ride Tour at Kauai Railway

By Ramona M |

My hubby and I loved the train ride tour and enjoyed feeding the farm animals . The train conductor was awesome he explained how to properly feed the farm animals . He also pointed out the vegetation on the property as well .

Fascinating and a must-see attraction in Kauai

By Paul M |

Our family wasn't sure what to expect on a rainy day in Kauai, but the visit to Kauai Plantation was amazing! After riding a train and seeing the lovely grounds, the kids got to feed the animals and then we got to hop off and our guide Kai led us through the orchards. There we learned all kinds of fascinating insights about the trees and their fruits. Everyone could sample and take home oranges, cherries, starfruit and more. It was a lot of fun. Then we took a little break for lunch, which was also delicious for everyone. We closed things out tasting some sugar cane. All in all, we recommend this for families!

Fun Afternoon

By Cindi F |

A fun afternoon, the train ride was amazing, informative and interesting with an animated tour guide. Love the “feeding” stop, laughed so hard! Tour the house too, and check out the grounds and shops. Don’t forget the Dole Whip!

Great Time

By Johnston Bill |

Really enjoyed the train ride and the grounds. Staff onboard the train was super nice. Wished we could have stop to see some of the plants, Like a coconut tree close up and Sugar cane plant. Similar to the animal feeding stop.

Best thing to do on Kauai!

By alicia s |

We've taken this train six times! Every time we're in the area with family we never miss it. It's so fabulous for everyone and so special.

Wonderful Tour for the Whole Family

By Jennifer N |

Did the fruit and lunch tour with my husband and 3 year old. Our tour guys was incredibly knowledgeable about all the plant life on the island and was able to answer any and all questions we had. The lunch was good but the best part was all the fruit. It was so fun trying and learning about fruits I had never even heard of before. The walk was easy, and we didn't even need a wagon or anything for our 3 year old. We all had so much fun, I would recommend this tour to anyone.

Great family time with our younger and older grandchildren.

By whostoys |

Kauai is our favorite island to travel to. There are so many great hiking and kayak opportunities. It can be challenging to find activities for everyone in our family. Ages range from 3years - 16years. We were able to find something for everyone. At the end of our adventure we were able to enjoy a fantastic happy hour with the islands famous rum!

Fun & Relaxing Trip Around Plantation

By Sally S |

This was a relaxing, informative and fun tour around the plantation grounds. Feeding the animals mid-ride was even fun for the adults!!

One of our most memorable experiences!

By NoahHackett |

My wife and I were on our honeymoon and we came across the plantation on Google. We opted for the 3 hr guided tour and it was fantastic. Kai was the best, he did an excellent job guiding the fruit tree walk and pointing out the history of the plantation. And later about the island and the people. Such a wonderful experience. The dole whip and rum tasting was fantastic to finish off the day after the tour. And one evening we stopped in at Gaylord’s for dinner. Excellent experience as well.

OK experience

By Mark M |

It was OK. The train cars were very nice. The scenery wasn't anything beyond what you find most everywhere in Kauai. We saw some feral pigs and a few horses.

Great activity for kids!

By sara1142024 |

The train ride was super cute and great amount of time for young children. Feeding the animals was a highlight!

Disappointed

By Del C |

We purchased the train tour tickets and found it very disappointing. We expected to hear some history of the plantation, but instead heard about their feral pigs, chickens and fruit trees. Its a beautiful spot, but don't waste money on the train tour.

Nice little train ride

By RollTideGoBama |

Cute little train ride. Only 40 minutes but well worth the $20 senior price we paid. Narration was good but I would have liked it if he called out each variety growing in rows or better yet they could put up signage so we could tell instead of guessing/wondering.

Vacation with grandchildren

By oliveroI4377LX |

My grandchildren loved feeding the animals tortillas and watching the pigs follow the train. they are ages 6,4,4and 2.

5/5 experience - Beautiful property

By Worst service I have experienced |

Fun for all ages, very educational and beautiful property. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Kauai, add to your itinerary.

Choo Choo!

By KPro21 |

Cute little ride with a bit of a history lesson ~ great for the kiddos and us adults enjoyed it too. If you take additional tours there, you may hear some repeats about the history.

A fun stop in Kauai

By Dan L |

What a fun train ride. Kamu, our conductor, was great. So many fruit trees you pass by. And then you stop to feed horses and pigs. A must do if you have a kid.

Wonderful fun!

By Jack G |

This train ride is a great experience especially for the kids. Adults get some great history as well. Stopping to feed the animals was especially fun for the grandchildren!

Tourist fun!

By Kelly S |

This was a beautiful facility with just enough “tourist” in it to not seem cheesy but worthwhile! Our conductor was knowledge and witty and even our adult children enjoyed feeding the animals! The restaurant was one of the best we had while on the island! Def go!

Kauai Railroad

By annebennett734 |

Trip was very informative. Loved seeing the orchards and stopping to pet and feed the animals was awesome.

Great Plantation Train Ride

By jwshep101 |

Great train ride through the plantation. Kids has lots of fun feeding the animals. Takesa bout 45 minutes.

Great train and orchard experience

By Mohsen S |

Great experience overall. We took the train trip with the 3.5 hour orchard tour, hiking, and animal feeding experience. We had the opportunity to try a wide variety of fruits, guide was very knowledgeable, and the kids loved the overall experience. The plantation has a fascinating history and I'm glad we're able to put our $$ towards a family run business in Kauai.

Interesting

By lilmama1786 |

Our tour guy Kemu was amazing and definitely had the cheesy dad jokes! Fun & very interesting! Definitely recommend it

Best Walking Tour

By AugustRegina |

We visited Kauai for the first time and completed the Walking Tour/ Lunch/ Train Ride option. It was a lot of fun walking through the orchards, tasting the fruit, feeding the animals, and learning about the history of the island and the plantation. Our tour guides Bruce & Lexie were kind and knowledgeable, made us feel welcome and like family. We would recommend the tour to everything who visits!

Fun for the Whole Family

By Olivia D |

Take a tour of a historic plantation while throwing tortillas to pigs and chickens! Charismatic guide, very beautiful wood train cars, pristine property.

Interesting short visit

By lesley r |

We visited Kauai Plantation as part of our HoHo bus tour, having booked the train ride in advance. The journey through the various vegetation was interesting with a good description of what we were seeing, it would probably be better in spring or autumn when the plants are either coming into bloom or the fruits etc ready for harvest. It was a gentle 45 minute trip with a stop off to feed the resident horses, donkey & wild pigs.
After the train ride we signed up for the rum tasting, which was also good. I'm not a huge rum drinker, so didn't purchase any in the on site shop, I did buy a small bottle of honey which is delicious and a small rum cake, just wish I'd had room in the suitcase for the larger version.

Making Memories

By Lorna R |

The train ride took me back to when we did school field trips in Lahaina. Everyone was helpful and attentive to my mom, who was in a wheelchair and she had a great time. Kamu was great and so much fun! Mahalo plenty to everyone there!

Great trip!

By Ashley S |

We loved hearing about the history of Hawaii and plantation. We thought the train ride was nice and seeing the different fruits and vegtables growing was awesome. All the wild pigs and horses were beautiful. We finished our tour with going to the gift shop and getting some rum :)

Short adventure in the "city"

By MominOC |

This was a 40 minute open air train ride through an old sugar plantation now more an agriculture spot. Guide was funny and gave details about current status of the plantation. We tried the Candy Apple Bananas that she mentioned and they were wonderful! Fed some horses, donkey, and pigs with tortillas.

Lots of fun.

By jfairless10 |

What a charming and fun tour. Love seeing the plantation, the botanicals and all of the animals. Best part was the stop to feed all of the horses, cows, pigs and donkeys. Had a wonderful time.

Small children

By nonihas5 |

There should be one or two cars reserved for parties with small children. It was hard to hear the narrator due to excitement of these visitors. Thank you!

Fun and informative!

By lukertam |

The ride was fun with a highlight of feeding animals. Cool plantation. Learned more about feral pigs.

Awesome time worth the trip

By Boolow |

Had a great time with the family hitting up this plantation and train ride. Bruce our tour dude was awesome. Favorite part of train ride was the feed the animal stop.

Expensive and boring

By vicky_traveller |

The train ride is 23 dollars pp and lasts about 35 minutes. Learning about several different fruit trees is interesting at first but gets boring pretty quickly. There is nothing else to it. Kids may enjoy feeding the (included) store bought animal feed. Adults, not so sure. The train itself looks boring The music played gets a little annoying too.

Family fun!

By Melissa F |

We had a blast riding the train and learning about the plantation. Our guide was hilarious and informative. Everyone's favorite part was hanging out with the horses, donkeys and pigs.

Great Storytelling

By Moana S |

We went on a Sunday, so all of the other attractions on the property were closed... but we had a great time! Keep in mind I have a 9 month old and a 3 year old. This means I am looking for an activity to keep them both entertained and grab a break for myself at the same time if possible. Turns out, this train ride was a perfect combination.

Check in is fairly simple and there is plenty of bathroom & parking stalls. The open car train is breezy and comfortable; all good views. The sight seeing is beautiful and the animal feeding activity is pretty fun; I can't believe how many new, tiny pigs they have.

Most of all though, the conductor and his storytelling was phenomenal. He has the perfect ratio of humor and candor. It is hard to believe he does this 5 times a day because it sounds so fresh. If I could like and subscribe to more of his storytelling, I would!!! The kids did not notice his talent, but I was able to enjoy it very much.

Great for the kids - young and old

By rmps_philomath |

A great shared adventure with history of the sugar plantation era. I have done the train, safari, and guided tours and each have their own view of the history of the plantation. Highly recommend the train with the kids - feeding the pigs and horses was delightful.

Fun

By Gr8lvu |

It is touristy. The ride was Fun and feeding the animals was the highlight. The Kamaaina is a little bit pricey.
We encounter some rude tourists, took our sit without asking permission and when I ask her politely if my kids could take the sit back she said no. The tour should remind everyone especially the tourists who are feeling entitled to act elite to stay humble and act more human.

Tacky but fun

By CasandraTP |

We had some time to spare so thought why not. The train ride goes for 45mins with a stop to feed animals. Who would have guessed cows had such long tongues and the pigs were fun to watch, even the naughty ones. The guide was informative and I did learn about some of the vegetarian even if there were dad jokes all through it. The estate is lovely and old school with a restaurant if hungry. Great for families as it doesn’t go too long. Do book in advance on busy days. There is a lunch ride but personally I would rather eat in the restaurant after the trip instead. Would I do it again, no, but pleased I did do it.

Lovely Plantation Experience

By AliciaWhitney |

We highly recommend the plantation railway tour that includes the orchard and lunch. We would not take only the 40 minute railway tour. . We were guided by Bruce, who was informative, enthusiastic, and helpful to all of us. We really liked how lovely he was to the children in the group. We learned a lot, enjoyed our walk through the orchard, which included sampling of different fruits from the trees. We had a delicious outdoor lunch which was ready and waiting for us partway through our exploration. It was one of the highlights of our visit to the island.

Great little ride!!

By Jet762117 |

Beautiful plantation and the critters were a bonus. Had a great little restaurant we tried before our ride and the little shops were great

Kilohanna Plantation Railway

By Sherry6432024 |

I think this ride is primarily for children, not adults. Our guide was enthusiastic and funny, but I would have like more of the history of the plantation. It was only 40 minutes long and that included a 10-15 minute stop to feed tortillas to the pigs and cows. I thought it was kind of expensive for such a short tour.

Perfect experience

By Erika D |

We did the lunch walk through the orchard! Bruce was an excellent guide! We tasted fruit, got to pick fruit, had a delicious lunch, learned about a lot of things and met the animals! I am so glad we did this on our visit and we absolutely would do it again!

Full of information & yummy fruit!

By darrows2024 |

We had a great time on the plantation tour & fruit tasting. Kai is a very informative, fun & friendly guide. He had stories about history of the island, the plantation & the fruit. No question was left unanswered.

We had a great time picking our own fruit and able to take some home! Loved visiting the pigs & alpacas. It was so fun to feed them as well.

Go learn some great stories & taste some yummy fruits with Kai!

Not long enough....

By Meme B |

Wonderful but seems so short. Wish we could do longer tour without the Rum. More animals and local fruitsOur tour guide is great, very entertaining 👏

A Fun Activity!

By SDCentennial |

Train is exactly what you expect - quaint and open air. Conductor and host were informative and fun. Feeding animals was the highlight. Would have liked to have tasted some of the fruit they grow or hear a little more about the farming. What really made it fun was the rum tasting and the drinks/food at The Mahiko Lounge. DO NOT leave before having the ahi appetizer and a mai tai. Pricey, but OMG - so good.

Quaint visit in history

By hisliljewel |

It was a beautiful and relaxing ride. Showing us how the Plantation was started & continues to progress. It was fun watching kids feed the animals. The area around the restaurant & sweet shop was gorgeous to walk around and imagine how they lived when it was a flourishing industry.

Phenomenal Adventure by Train

By Alannah Q |

This guided train ride is a fabulous experience. Meeting and feeding the rescued wildlife, enjoying the plantation and the RUM was a nice little surprise event while we were visiting Kauai. Enjoy it, it is beautiful.

Great relaxing way to spend some time on the island.

By gregkw17 |

This was a nice tour, our guide Lexi was Awesome. We learned a lot about the different types of fruits grown on the island and were able to sample and take some with us if we wanted. We both rode the train and walked quite a bit, almost got rained out, but the train was there to help us out of the rain and complete the tour.

Informative

By LoveTravel553251 |

This was enjoyable and a beautiful day and we had a great tour guide Tiny, he was very knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor he shared delicious fruits right off the trees. The grounds were beautiful and the animals were a great bonus. Would highly recommend the 3.6 hr tour.

Good time.

By Dave C |

This trip is a lot of fun and feeding the pigs, donkey and horses was fun. I recommend this trip for a family or just about anybody.

Dont miss this gem!

Beautiful orchards to see and enjoy the train ride with kids.. great guide by Bruce.
Pinapple shack outside was very cute and yummy.. lovely experience over all..

Fun Ride b/f the Luau

By naviator2003 |

Great little trip around the plantation. Especially enjoyed feeding the animals! The tortilla slinging at the chickens was comical!

Great tour, great value!

By Debbie S |

We booked this at the last minute and I'm so glad we did!
Ours was the train, lunch, tour with Kai. During our briefing he provided sunscreen, bug spray and ponchos. After the short train ride we got off and the orchard walking tour began.
It was so informative and stopping to taste the different fruits was a treat. Our lunches were included and we chose what we wanted (salads, sandwiches) when making the reservation.
After lunch it was feeding the animals and more fruit picking.
From start to finish Kai gave us information on the islands of Hawaii, the fruit and trees we were seeing and local culture.
Our group thought the tour was a great value for the amount we paid and would highly recommend it to anyone.
Only caveat, and it's mentioned in their website, is it's alot of walking and standing.

Great attraction

By 30cindy2024 |

Great little ride. Informative and the narrator was awesome!
Great for kids and adults both.
Feeding the animals was a hoot!

Local families love returning

By KokeeHiker |

We are locals who love revisiting this outdoor activity to get the keiki out of the house and ipads. The ride is educational and the guides include a lot of humor in their history of the grounds, wildlife and fauna. We love the pigs, this time Boris who is about 200 lbs wild pig actually did a sitting trick for us, the grandkids loved it! Pineapple Whip stand on the grounds is the perfect end to the excursion.

Great tour! Go early during your trip to enjoy the fruit

By Stacy Strickland |

We had a great tour through the farm and enjoyed trying the different citrus and feeding the animals. (He now eats Cara Cara oranges!!!)

Lunch was good. I had the vegetarian salad and would have liked more portabello mushrooms as the salad was really on the light side. I don't love all the waste that was created by our lunch either (-1 star for this... if hour that a farm would be more conscientious about avoiding landfill-bound items).

We do wish we had gone earlier on our trip because they let you bring home fruit with you.

Time well spent!!

By TinaC356 |

Definitely planned this with mostly my daughters (4, 6, and 8 yr olds) in mind but my husband and I enjoyed it so much more than we expected!! Beautiful day to walk around and learn! Bruce and Lexi were absolutely wonderful guides who were very knowledgeable.

For sure recommend doing this towards the beginning of your trip though- the fruits you’re able to take with you would make for great snacks throughout the rest of your trip!! That being said, bring a bag! 🙃

Lunch was delicious and portions were plenty! Refreshments were also provided which was a really nice bonus!!

A great tour

By petvetmom |

What a great tour. We did the walking plantation tour and train ride. What a wonderful day. Walking among orchards and tasting fruit right off the tree… with fruit to bring home! Learned about sugar cane industry, history and other fun facts. Bruce our guide was beyond excellent. We were able to feed pigs, horses and cattle. Followed the tour with rum tasting(also great… book it on line ahead). You could spend the day there.

Beautiful representation of Kauai's rich history and fertile land

By lizburden26 |

This is a laid back afternoon activity, enjoying a train ride, learning about the sugar cane industry, and how people can reinvent their community when economics force change. The grounds offer opportunity for walking around through the many types of fruit and nut trees growing. You can pick fruits to eat right off the tree. There are animals that live on the plantation that you can feed and learn about.

Fun way to learn about sugar plantations

By Moe |

My husband is a train nut, so this was a priority for him. We enjoyed the train ride, feeding the animals, and learning about sugar cane plantations.

Great hawaiian experien

By Michael A |

Great experience, good food, good shows. The people were quite friendly and the garden was phenomenal. More than enough to eat at the luau buffet

A must-do visit if you love plants and trains

By Ken B |

A wonderful train ride and orchard tour. Tiny is very knowledgeable about all the trees and plants! The train crew was great as well.

Awesome Fruit

By jsmael65 |

Took the Train ride and lunch package. The short train ride was okay. Walking through the Orchards and eating fruit along the way was awesome. Learned so much about the plants and how to pick them and eat them. My niece who is is 6 loved eating the variety of fruit. ALthough I have to admit the Sugar Cane was her favorite.

fun night

By terratoone |

WE had such a great time! We rode the train, fed the animals, shopped and enjoyed the Luau which was really well done! thoroughly enjoyed it!

Much more than a train ride.

By Kristi R |

Went on the train ride and plantation hike. Such a wonderful experience tasting all kinds of exotic fruits right off the trees. They even let us take some fruit with us. Bruce was an amazing guide. Highly recommend this tour.

Lovely afternoon train ride

By Liz R |

This was our first time doing the train activity. It was a lovely way to learn about plantation life. Our guide Kamu was really funny (guess I like puns and dad jokes!) But he shared a lot of info about island life and all the fruits and foods grown on the plantation. The boys loved feeding the pigs and horses and donkey! The Pineapple Dole Whip was the cherry on top!

Nice

By Susie B |

Nice little trip. Next time will plan longer excursion, but this was good for the time allotted. The conductor was knowledgeable and informative. It was also fun to feed the animals, made you feel like a kid again.

Awesome Train Ride

By Manoiki |

I’m from Kaua’i and had never been on it before. My wife wanted to go when we planned our trip to where I’m from. She loved it, the ride, the tour and the feeding of the animals was an all around great experience! The guide was good fun.

Great visit e

By megmcardenas |

We were on Kauai for a mini vacation and I have a year and an half year old who loves animals. We decided to check out the plantation- all of the staff were so friendly and helpful. The grounds are beautiful. The adults loved the old fashioned train with windows. They even had a cart that had windows that could close so you could be more protected from the elements. The adults also loved hearing the history and my daughter loved the animals lol such a great experience and for a great price!

We came here on a day when it was raining on and off. While it would have been more fun in the sun, it was still a nice ride on the train in a covered train car. If weather were better, we would have tried the ride plus botanical walk. Our guide kept us laughing with jokes as he pointed out the different trees and plants - avocados, lemons, passion fruit, bananas, etc. We also stopped to feed some of the animals. After the ride, we shopped in the rum distillery (tastings available) and admired the old plantation house (now a lovely restaurant). There are also several small shops selling Hawaiian clothes, souvenirs, and candy.

Informative ride

This was the second time we’ve done the train ride. It is interesting to hear about all the trees. It would have been more interesting if when fruits were pointed out we would have known what he was talking about. We were in the 2nd car so by the time we got to where he was talking about we didn’t know what tree he had mentioned. The best part was stopping to feed the animals. Stop by the Sweet Shoppe after the ride. The caramels are amazing!

One of the best values and enjoyable Hawaii time experience.

We loved the train ride, fun narrative and personable engineer (Paula) and conductor (Nick?). They were awesome. Totally 100% recommend.

Great tour

such a fun trip. The orchard tour was informative and fun. Eating delicious fruits picked right off the trees was a great experience. The property is beautiful and our guide, Kai was informative and entertaining. Highly recommend!

The plantation was amazing! From the time we arrived to the moment we left, the staff, tour guides, and everyone we met were polite, helpful and friendly.

The tour we went on is family friendly, educational, and fun.

We highly recommend this tour.

Train ride experience was awesome.

The train ride was a wonderful. The conductor explained the whole ride. Showed us all the different fruit trees and the different animals. I found it really neat how the animals started coming to the train as soon as they heard us coming. They knew they were going to get fed. I also loved how the pigs chased the train when we were leaving the feeding area. Very informative ride. I would ride the train again when and if I go back to Kauai.

Leisurely stroll and fruit tasting

Kai was great. Did the 3 hour walking tour. Tasted fruit right of the tree, had a nice picnic lunch, and and relaxing train ride. Definitely recommend

Enjoyable attraction

Pleasant train ride with the kids, included feeding the animals and seeing the native plants for pineapple, coconut, tarrot, etc.. Quaint shop for chocolate and caramels and other memorabilia. Got my first picture of red-crested cardinal here also. A refreshing rain hit while here that cooled things off.

Great way to pass some time

We had a late evening flight on a Sunday and needed something to pass the time before going to the airport. I found the train tour so we decided to go. We enjoyed learning about the plantation. We also had the opportunity to feed some animals partway through the tour. Kids absolutely loved this part. The grounds were beautiful. The only downside was nothing else was open on the property since it was Sunday.

Fun experience, worth the time and money

The train ride is informative and worth the money if you enjoy feeding wild pigs, cows, and bulls. This was the highlight of the ride. You will have about 20 minutes for this experience and a 15-minute ride there and back. Our tour guide was very nice and informative, describing the various plants on the plantation. If you have kids, this is an absolute must-do for them. I suggest you plan for a half-day to allow time to visit the other venues on the plantation. My only complaint is the ride to the feeding area and back is essentially the same.

A gem on the beautiful island of Kauai

All right, I struggled with writing this because I don't want people to know how amazing these place is! I don't like crowds. But I love this place so much. I am a sentient person who enjoys beautiful surroundings, excellent wine, delicious food, plants, train rides, shopping, and animals. This place hit all of the marks. This is my idea of heaven, minus the farm animal smells but that was only when riding the train away from the plantation and getting up close and personal with the animals during the feeding and they are just so adorable, even that's okay with me. Shout out to our amazing and hilarious tour guide on the train ride, our congenial host at the Koloa rum tasting (you all gotta try this rum, so good!), our beautiful server who served us a delicious salmon curry, baked brie, and seafood pasta and some excellent Chardonnay and rose champagne at Gaylord's restaurant and our young and handsome cocktail server for happy hour drinks after the train ride, and all of the staff at Kilohana Plantation. This place is indeed something special. But don't tell anyone, lol. Five stars and highly recommended!

All Aboard!!

My 3 year old Grandson LOVES trains! I read about the Kauai Plantation Railway in The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook and thought this would be a perfect way for us to spend part of a day. I can't recommend this enough. The train and plantation grounds are beautifully maintained and the staff was so knowledgable and friendly. Engineer Bruce and Conductor/Tour Guide Paul were excellent! The tour is narrated with lots of fun and interesting trivia and information about the planation and Kauai. We rode in the enclosed car, but the majority of passengers rode in the open air car. Either one offers great views of all the scenery. There's a fun surprise when the train stops to give passengers a chance to greet and feed some of the resident animals. Kauai Plantation Railway was one of my favorite adventures on our visit to Kauai! (There are many other things to do on the plantation which would be fun to explore.) This was a fun family experience!

Lots of laughs

We had a great time on the train ride. We were able to walk up and purchase tickets for the hour. Kamu was a great guide and had the best jokes!

Passionate and knowledgeable guide

Camile was amazing guide and doing great work at educating people and helping the community. While the history of Hawaii isn't really shared where I grew up, I know that it's full of colonization, genocide and the stealing of land and resources, Camile shared this information in a way that didn't make me feel guilty of being a tourist. I learned a lot about local agriculture and it's obvious that Camille is passionate.

40 minute train ride

By crossngirl |

The 40 minute train ride was perfect ! The guide was funny yet very informative. We had 3 children 9 and under with us and they enjoyed feeding the animals .

An engaging and interesting experience.

By juliejesstori |

The guide shared the flora and fauna of Kauai along with historical relevance and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the fruit along the way. He seemed equally patient when responding to a Hawaiian social-political questions from his own multi-generation perspective relevance as when helping the youngsters on the walk crack open a coconut they found on the ground.

Waste of time and money

By karenkIllinois |

Huge waste of money, do not do this. No views, very little narration, no education about the plantation. It is not a working plantation in anyway whatsoever, this is a huge tourist trap. Halfway you have a stop to feed ugly, stinky wild pigs, and cows that drool all over you - absolutely gross. Waste of time and money. The Gaylord restaurant was awful also. Food was not fresh, no flavor, tasted like it just came out of the freezer.

Family Fun!

Our family of 6 enjoyed the train ride so much! We loved learning about the history of the plantation, seeing all of the tropical plants and fruit trees, and of course feeding the animals! Highly recommend for visitors of all ages! Thanks for a fun morning!

Train and walking tour fantastic. Lunch needs a lot of work. Hot food served cold and under cooked (just serve a cold lunch sandwich and bag of chips maybe some Hawaii chocolate). Much better!

Toddler Approved!

By jkbutkowski |

Our almost 2 year old loved being able to ride on the train and even more feeding the animals! Sometimes those feral toddlers are hard to entertain but this train kept him engaged!

Highly Recommend the Hike!

By Matt J |

If you love to learn about different fruits and get to try a few of them then I highly recommend the Kauai Plantation Railway's Hike! My one recommendation is to go on the hike earlier in your vacation as they will let you take some of the fruit with you and can take a few days to ripen. Please do not be scared by the word "hike" it is not a lot of walking and there are lots of stops to explain the different fruit and getting to sample the in season fruit.

Fun!

My daughter loved the trainride! Beautiful scenery, great tourguide, just a chill little adventure and feeding the animals is a fun extra!
