Expensive but gets you where you need to go,,,,

By Leslie D |

The prices keep going up but the services are still fine. The cars are clean and well kept. Certain lines are busier than others and the Long Beach train in the summer can be packed. Still, a decent way to travel the Island,

Best ride into NYC

By dreamingofrain |

Terrific train into NYC -- beats the subway or driving. Clean, fast, and friendly staff. Great service to Long Island as well.

Not happy at all with your schedules. Make sure you give attention to other lines as well

By Amar S |

Who ever the person that put together the new schedules should be fired. So much incompetence. Failure to update people, working during rush hours, putting other line behind grand central line. No straight line that goes to Atlantic terminal. Change track constantly and delays. On the way back home train time arrival is 7:05 but train is coming on 7:20. Change the time if ur not sure. Again it goes back to my first point fire the schedule maker. Update the time if u know if it’s not doable. One more thing on Jamaica station more then one person is making announcement at the same time. Get rid of the 70’s trains, they smell so bad.

An easy commute

By danfriedmanmd |

The LIRR has providing long islanders with a way to avoid the congestion of the LIE and parkways. They have added double decker trains and have improved the seats. Still, the trains are very congested and people refuse to place their large and bulky bags into the overhead compartments. The price is also a bit exorbitant for those who live in Suffolk county (19 dollars from port Jefferson to Penn station). There is also no route from the south to the north shore.

On time with plenty of seating in off-peak hours

By Barbara H |

Never traveled this line until recently. The trains were all on time within a minute of the scheduled stop, quite clean, had spacious seating, and clean bathrooms. The off peak trains had lots of room at the farther stations when traveling to NYC. Even the peak trains seemed to have nearly enough seats to fit everyone, at least until the first few stops were unloaded.

Trash and graffiti

By Hi-Andrea |

There is graffiti inside every car. Trash also. A very expensive way to travel. A taxi cab is better and safer.

Unreliable and way too expensive

By bkennedy826 |

I wish I could give the LIRR zero stars. There have been way too many problems over the last few months to give them even one star. Perhaps some of our grossly overpriced fares should be used to make infrastructure updates! Or how about they work on their email/text alert system. The cancelation emails come out hours after the train was supposed to have left the station!

Fast, efficient link from JFK to Penn Station

By olympicbks |

I used this line to get to Penn Station in Manhattan from JFK airport. The trip was inexpensive, fast and efficient.

When it's your only option...

By Lpoko258 |

The LIRR has us by the...well, you know...it's the only public transportation in to the city, so there is not really another option. The trains are clean-ish, the staff are well versed in train times, and tickets prices. The stations could use some upgrades...

Easy to use service to get finally to JFK airport from the centre of town

By Eyekaytoo |

My son & I took this train from Penn Station in the middle of the Big Apple to get to Jamaica and, from there we took the Air Train to JFK airport. All very easy to navigate, the carriages were clean enough and the trains travelled regularly. Certainly a lot cheaper that taking a cab or Uber from the centre of New York City.

Clean and efficient

By Michael M |

My wife and I took it into the city from Westbury. 5 dollars to park all day and 9 dollars each way to and from the city. What better transportation is there from Long Island? None.

used to travel on the LIRR for work, when the subway gets to be too much, I treat myself to the LIRR.

By bevybaby59 |

It is quieter than the subway, the seats are much more comfortable than the subway, however you will pay for these conveniences. I think it's worth the extra money.

Avoid subway

By Happy Camper |

This is 2 stops..20" to Penn Station.
Subway takes forever! Take from Jamaica Station. On Saturday, it was $18 rt

Great Rail Line

By Jeff R |

We used the LIRR to and from JFK and for a trip out to Long Island. The service was excellent. It was on time and the conductors were very friendly. The MTA has a couple of mobile apps for schedules and purchasing tickets. It was great and super easy - and you get discounted fares. The train was really clean as were the stations.

A delight

By biosafety-guy |

I used to travel by LIRR when I went to college at Stony Brook decades ago. WOW, what a change! Cars are more comfortable, quieter and have electronic sign board announcing station stops. The phone app made purchasing tickets a snap. A much more pleasant a way to travel into Manhattan than driving.

Great link to JFK

By David J |

Get the air train to Jamaica and then catch the LIRR to Penn. A quick and inexpensive way to get from JFK to Central Manhattan.
Easy to negotiate if you’re new in town.

Long Island railroad taxpayer ripoff/robbery

By el g |

It’s basically a ripoff to Americans you train ticket will cost $5 on the app but $14 on the train if you running late to work that’s $9 each individual the MTA is ripping Americans off please America come to your senses this is totally a ripoff and robbery

Very quick into Manhattan

By Christophergiles |

Spent the day in Manhattan and used this service $21.50 but direct and about 20 mins to Penn Station. Excellent service but can get busy so you may have to stand.

Above-ground RR to Manhattan from JFK

By WorldTraveler9 |

A resident of NYC recommended the LIRR as the fastest way to get from Manhattan to JFK. As an added bonus, part of the route is above ground with a view of residential neighborhoods. Along with the Q40 bus, it is the cheapest way to get from Manhattan to several JFK hotels, including the Hilton, Hampton Inn, and Courtyard.

Last minute changes Track , lost my train

By Compass824255 |

tracks change without notice at last minute , no information available on time, was 20 minutes waiting on the indícated track , it changed at last minute without notice, lost my train , next train one hour later , expensive, bad service.

Great for getting from JFK to NYC

By 4Bliss |

Easy to connect from JFK airport via the Air Train. Discounted fares for seniors and students. Great way to get into the city.

Several passengers are using the 3-person seats as 2-person seats and refusing to share, causing many people to stand. They should remind passengers that these seats are for 3

Easy was to get from Penn Station to JFK Airport

By Craigmart75 |

A great way to get from Penn Station to JFK Airport. Change at the Airtrain station. Easy to travel on, I was traveling with a large roller bag that I was checking.

Great way to get around

By Harry A |

I live not far from an LIRR station, and have been riding it into NYC all my life. Over the summer, I started having to commute into Manhattan three times a week, so I have become very familiar with the LIRR. It's a very convenient way to get around, particularly to and from NYC. Probably the most convenient way to get to JFK airport from Manhattan via public transit.

Pros:
-LIRR trains are always on time. Of the over 100 times I've ridden the LIRR, I can only remember one single time my train was significantly delayed (more than 5 minutes).
-The app is very convenient and easy to use.
-A surprising amount of stations and areas served, and continuing to expand. You can take the LIRR to Manhattan, JFK airport, Citi Field (where the Mets play), the Hamptons, UBS arena (where the Islanders play), and they just expanded to Grand Central Station. The newly renovated Penn Station is also really nice, and a huge improvement from what it used to be.

Cons:
-As with any commuter train system, it gets crowded during peak hours.
-Tickets are somewhat expensive.
-A lot of the equipment is very outdated. Some of the trains they operate look like they have been in service since the 70's.

Traveling Home

By 44loganp |

Never realized how quick I can get home. Travelled quickly and quietly. It was a great experience. Would definitely use it again.

New cars already falling apart

By Bob. B |

Rode one of LIRR's newer trains. Poor maintenance resulted in the interior already falling apart. They should maintain their existing trains before wasting money on new ones.

Easy way to get to Manhatten

By 960LisaA |

This was an easy way to get to Manhatten. We were able to figure it all out without any help. We just bought one card and swiped it twice, once for both of us. The cars were clean, the route was easy to figure out.

Trains need Preventive Maintanance

By VPDavis |

I use the LIRR monthly. The restrooms are always dirty, there are broken seats, train cars aren't cleaned throughly. There seems to be an issue at least 2-3 times a week with service. For the amount we spend monthly I would hope that overall improvements are in the works. The individuals that check tickets are always friendly and greet you professionally.

Quick ride in style

By Victoria B |

I have heard of so many problems with this railroad but I love to travel it. My rides have always been timely and very comfortable.

OK Railroad

By scott |

Took the LIRR from Jamaica to Ronkomkoma to get to Islip AIrport. There is a shuttle to the airport for $5 from Ronkomkoma Station but I could not find it (turns out it leaves from the back side of the station). Still the taxi was only $13 so not too bad.

It was Friday of a long weekend, so the train was probably busier than normal, but it was still fine. Seats are hard but not uncomfortable.

Trains do not go very often on some of the branches. I just missed one train and had to wait an hour for the next train.

lirr

By joefJ8106QK |

most comfortable and easiest way to get from jfk or far rockaway to the city.
sit in a nice comfortable seat, and let the MTA do the driving

Great

By MyMauiBoston |

Great means of transportation. Clean, cool (not stuffy like many sbway trains in NYC,) fast, easy to use. Be adventurous.

Quick trip

By Sabrina H |

We hopped on, relaxed, and hopped off. Train was clean and smooth riding. It was a treat to be able to see some additional skylines and city from the train.

Clean, fast transportation

By Art J |

Travelled from Queens to Manhattan in a fast, clean train. This is more expensive than the NYC subway system but is worth the extra money.

Convenient for tourists and commuters.

By Donald S |

The LIRR is the fastest way to get between certain key areas. If you are visiting Queens, a quick trip to the Jamaica Station will allow you rapid access to Midtown, Downtown Brooklyn, and beaches and towns to the east. Service is usually reliable, the trains are clean, and the staff is typically very helpful.

Can't beat it for transit into & out of Manhattan

By GJMiller11 |

We were so blessed to find our hotel so easily connected to and from Manhattan using the Jamaica Station and Long Island Rail Road (LIRR). We're from Ohio, so the NYC transit system is very unfamiliar and somewhat intimidating to us. Nevertheless, we explored the LIRR option into and out of Midtown Manhattan because we preferred to walk around midtown, rather than enter using the Subway and travel underground. The LIRR train cars were very quiet, comfortable, and smooth, providing us with both express and local options. They ran every few minutes, with their arrival times published on the platform screen. The price was cheap as compared to taxis, and we were relatively assured of on time arrival. Finally, the LIRR transit to and from the Jamaica Station also allowed us to travel to and from the JFK Airport without taking a cab or ever putting our time-sensitive travel plans at risk. It was a dream.

Avoids Traffic Jams...

By Adam R |

This workhorse of New York transportation is often more relaxing and reliable than driving across Long Island, but it has all of the headaches attendant with commuter transit, as well.

Service

By Andrew55a |

I took a train from Penn station to stony brook the service is very good and always on time never had problem till now been there for 4 times timing was good .
Only problem is when there are some seat empty some people put the dirty shoe up on the seat and make the seat dirty and not clean they don't think about other passenger just think about them .some people just just have a seat empty next to them and they out their own bag and don't let people to sit next to them very selfish other wise it's pretty good.

Vacation

By lnauck |

Great way to experience NYC. We stayed in Long Island and then took the train into NYC. It was clean and people on the train were very friendly and welcoming. It goes directly to Penn Station and that puts you right at Madison Square Garden.

Convenient Way to Visit the City

By MF C |

I've been taking the LIRR for 42 years and have only had a few minor problems all that time. The service is decent, the conductors and other staff helpful, and for me it's the best way to get to the city. Some lines don't go straight through to Penn Station, and you need to change at Jamaica. But no fear. The platforms are marked well and the transfer train is either waiting already or comes less than 5 mins. You can also take a train to various stops in Queens and to Brooklyn.

Confusing, crowded and in a questionable neighborhood

By Lou V |

Confusing signage, very crowded any time near either rush hour. Very few friendly staff and in an unsafe neighborhood. I try not to get off the train unless I have to transfer and I would NEVER walk around anywhere near the station.

Never knew this is consider an attraction but it's the only way to travel best to Manhattan from Long Island!

By Lejaceman |

The Long Island Rail Road to us New Yorkers or as we call it Long illand people love this form of transport from Long Island to Manhattan. Whether to catch a broadway show in Times Square and avoid looking for parking, or catching a game at Citi Field and not have to look for parking...or getting slooshed in Manhattan and not worry about driving home...the LIRR as we call it is one of the best solutions to a commuter situation. The LIRR isn't perfect since they do have delays from time to time, used to be better when you could even get a drink on the train but heck even the prices have gone way up...still ridership is up and it beats the traffic jams in our wonderful NY City! Oh well, ces't la vie that's the life we have here in NY and this wonderful rail road system cant be beat. Take a ride and have some fun exploring Long Island!

time saver

By heydy C |

Time Saver , we wanted to check out NYC the hotel we stood at explained to us the lirr brings you right to the center of the city .& it did , Time cutter, charging outlets and a bathroom . LIRR rocks ! ps the seats are super comfy , slept the whole way back lol

A trustful but dated public system

By Global-K-TW |

We took a quick journey between Jamaica Station and Long Beach before leaving the States. It provided a reliable travel experience to us as it was our first time to travel in Long Island area. But, the facilities in the train and station are old and dated.

Its my former hometown

By mjordan57 |

Nothing has changed, but its improved with adding hotels. Location could be improved, too crowded. Still would go back though

LIRR Jamiaca to Grand Central/Metro North

By Dana D |

Lived in New York my whole life and this is the first time I’ve used the LIRR from JFK. I had to get to Grand Central from JFK and read about this option and it was seamless. I will use this option going forward to get to and from JFK from Grand Central/Metro North. It couldn’t be easier and the entire journey was $24 including the Air Train fare. When at Jamaica station they offer a combo ticket, which includes the LIRR and Metro North fares. You can also purchase the tickets on the MTA app, which I did so didn’t need a ticket machine. Glad I tried this!

Convenient

By Alison G |

I found the staff to be very helpful at Jamaica, where I purchased my return ticket to Manhattan. The Long Island Rail Road is convent, frequent and efficient. The service is quite quick for travelling to the city and also quite clean. I would recommend this mode of travel.

Good way to travel on Long Island

By Joe K |

Very good rides on the LIRR out to a museum on the island. But I have to take away a circle as real-time information on the trip back to Manhattan was less than adequate, the stations need awnings or protections from rain + sun; & it would be nice to have a snack bar or something like that on the train.

I did appreciate having restrooms on the trip very much. Also being able to pay my fare via an app. Sure wish the subway fare could be paid the same way.

Reliable public transport

By mwesi |

The Long Island Railroad has been maligned over the years but the fact is that it offers a reliable public transportation option for traveling between dozens of Long Island towns and either Penn Station (Manhattan, just below Madison Square Garden at 34th St.) or Brooklyn (Atlantic Ave., a block from Barclay's Center). Primarily a commuter service for residents of Long Island who work in NYC it is also a very useful service fro anyone needing to get to or from a Long Island destination. When there occasionally is a service disruption due to some problem the LIRR provide either busses that will still get you where you are going or, near to NYC, you will be able to use your LIRR ticket on a subway that will get you into NYC.
Use public transport when you can and save the headache of traffic jams and parking in NYC. The trains run often enough, with less frequency late at night thought they do run 24 hours per day) to make it convenient. Check their online schedules for the destination appropriate for you.

Fast and Easy

By TXtourst |

I took this into the city from JFK. The car was old and gross but it got me there quickly and was cheap. I was bummed that you couldn't see out of the windows once the sun went down.

Strangers not welcome

By Andrew D |

Leaving a NJ transit train at Penn central there were no signs to LIRR. Finally found a 'subway to LIRR'. This came to a T with no indication whether I should turn left or right. Bought a ticket which let me board a train but when I got to Jamaica it wouldn't let me out to the Airtrain without a 'MTA Exit pass' - although I hadn't been on any MTA train. Kind station lady eventually came to my rescue but if they will have these weird practices they should at least put some explanatory signs.

Worst part of living in long Island

By Sash S |

Forget about the high taxes and longer commute, the number one reason not to move to long island is the railroad, known as the world's worst run railroad, I can't believe this is still New York, is anyone watching these guys? Rush hour trains are always overcrowded and filthy, instead of adding train cars they make the trains shorter for a rush hour train, I get on in the 3rd stop 8 am and this shortened (9 not 12 cars) never has any seats left , why are we paying 300 per month?

Convient Transportation to The City

By LoveToTraval |

It can be daunting the first time. If so, just watch what other people do, or get help from someone who knows what they are doing. People are always asking my husband for help. Getting tickets is the hardest part. There is an attendant at the gate to help you. Then, literally just "Go with the flow", and enjoy the ride to Penn Central.

Lack of signage is an issue

By Beverlee S |

If you know where you're going and what you're doing, the system seems like it should work well, but for tourists, there was a notable lack of signage telling people where to get tickets, how to find your train, etc. We asked a few friendly strangers who were very helpful, but a sign on a door would have been nice.

Speedy service

By Catherine H |

Great way to get into the city from Jamaica station. Just always remember to buy your ticket prior to boarding as the metro card does not cover this. Trains are air conditioned which is great and plenty of room for large cases as well

travel to long island

By Road54929 |

I frequently take the railroad to Farmingdale - we leave from Jamaica station - the tellers/booth people are always courteous, friendly and knowledgeable.

How do they do it?

By TIMOTHY D |

I have used the LIRR since 2010 to get from Penn Station to JFK airport. My experience is the LIRR staff are some of the most professional and helpful people I have met. Considering the immense volume of people the LIRR deals with, they do an excellent job.

Always there to help. Any other errors or mistakes were my own.

Great option

By figgibumbum |

Took airtrain from Jfk to Jamaica station then LIRR to Penn station
Great alternative to the subway. Lots more space for luggage and see first glimpse of the city.
Staff all very helpful.
Ticket was $5 each.
Great start to our trip.

easy!

By preciouspinkxxx |

Off peak. quick and easy! Pay at the machine and you're off! Freeport to Penn Station in 45 minutes.

Better way to the city

By Keri H |

We drove to the city and was in traffic on a Thursday for 4-5 hours coming and going combined. The railway took only 30 minutes from West Babylon. Train is clean and seats are comfortable. Prices are reasonable too.

On time service during the weekend!

By 65savvytravelers |

We took the train into NYC on a Saturday morning and was pleased with the on time arrival at our destination at Penn Station. The train ride itself was pleasantly smooth and went without any glitch.

Alan from Skelmersdale UK

By Alanelms |

Took a trip from Jamaica to Penn station and return.
Out of all the alternatives this meant using your own intellect.
However the information display at the stations meant no issues in trip, then again if lost just ask!
Within 30 mins I was on 34th street, beat the metro by 40 mins and beat the taxi by mega bucks. $17 return inward off peak and return on peak.
Would recommend asking any airport hotel for advise I'd using JKK airport hotels.
I recommend this travel form, and spend you time doing what you want, unless you like looking out of a window watching the would go by .....even then you will not be disappointed.
Cheers
Alan

I've put I pic of Grand central as I can not of some reason assess those of Jamaica station ...techno dinosaur 🤔

Easy to Understand

By sdcamp3020 |

We took the LIRR from Jamaica Station to Penn Station over the weekend and it was cheap and easy to maneuver for someone who has never been to New York. The City Pass was just $4 for a one-way trip into the city and there was plenty of seating. It was cleaner than I anticipated and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Quickest route from airtrain to midtown

By Adam D |

Decided to take the LIRR from Jamaica to Midtown rather than subway. This was around 20-25 minutes quicker. When buying a ticket at Jamaica just look for the green machines with white tracks. Here you can buy a combined airtrain and LIRR metrocard for a one off journey. This ticket will get you to Penn Station from where you can walk, bus, cab or subway to your hotel. If you plan to later use the subway you will have to buy a seperate metrocard as they are two different systems, confusing I know! Easy journey with room for luggage which cut out the traffic. $12.50 each off peak.

Friendly Service

By PeigRos |

Must commend a young man who helped me ort out the ticket machine and gave kind advice while I waited for train to Massapequa.

Quick & Easy

By Rschagrin |

Took the LIRR from JFK via the Airtrain to Syosset station. It is a comfortable and inexpensive means of transportation.

Late island rail road

By Hass M |

Bad services bad customer service.
Train is dirty
They cancel the train whenever they want. Late all the time.
Also some of the conductors needs training about customer services

Great service

By cynthiarob |

With friends on Long Island, LIRR is a great addition. Not only covers Long Island pretty comprehensively but Newark airport and JFK are accessible.

Cheap and easy

By sonofe |

Cheap and easy access into downtown Manhattan. Takes about 35 minutes to Penn station which is close to Broadway.

Reliable but dated

By Squidhead |

The good old LIRR is an institution. I've traveled on it too many times than I can count. The trains usually run on time. The trains themselves are aging, some have taped-up tears in the upholstery. Some cars don't have screens announcing the next station. And some cars have a PA system which is worthless, you can't hear a thing. But it gets you to where you need to go.

Good service, strange pricing

By Tom B |

Good service, on time. Strange pricing. A round trip ticket, Jamaica to Penn, purchased at identical kiosks, are priced markedly differently. i don't know how to know that beforehand. I paid $16 for $8 ticket bought at Hempstead.

On time.

By Gerald K |

We took the Long Island Railroad to and from JFK airport. It was on time, reasonably priced (for New York, anyway) and was a smooth, easy ride.

The condition of the old, outdated cars was a minus, and refurbishing or replacing them would be a good idea, but we all know how this country is about infrastructure.

Fast and cheap

By 3lionsfan |

Needed to get back to JFK from Garment District. Walked down to Penn Station and took the LIRR to Jamaica. Cost me $7.25 and took about half an hour. From there the AirTrain gets you to your terminal for another $5. Some trains don't make the three stops in between so are quicker. Helpful ticket agent at Penn Station. My train car was reasonably clean, comfortable, and almost empty at 9:30 on a Tuesday morning.

Easiest way to Forest Hills

By dgdssdish d |

Going to Forest Hills for a concert than the LIRR is the way to travel. Hop on at crazy PENN Station and make sure you are in the first 6 cars as that is all that will fit on the platform at Forest Hills. They will make several announcements about that on the trai so listen up. Trains clean too.

Recommended for access to JFK Airport

By 845tommy |

I used it to get to JFK Airport.

Even though it's a fixed fare, taxis are expensive for one person due to the weak yen. The JFK-Port Authority bus that was there before COVID is no longer available.

Take the airtrain from each terminal at the airport to Jamaica, and follow the signs to the LIRR (Long Island Railroad) station.

From Jamaica, you can get to Penn Station, which is already connected to Manhattan, and Grand Central Station, which opened not long ago. Both stations are clean and easy to use. There are escalators, so it wasn't difficult to move around even with large luggage.

It's not a straight line from JFK Airport, but it cost about $17 per person and took just over 40 minutes to get there. The time was easy to read, and the conductor was walking around the car while checking the tickets, so it didn't feel unsafe. I'd like to use this route again when I come to New York.

Very fast and convenient

By Dillon X |

The LIRR is very fast and convenient, it is the only way to get from Long Island to NYC there can be some delays and cancellations

Great access to the City or Long Island

By cindynewyork |

Take the Q40 bus which is in front of the hotel to the LIRR station stop. As you get off the bus in front of McDonalds, look over your right shoulder and you will see the Station.

GREAT RIDE

By shirleys42 |

My trip to 34th street was quiet, comfortable and clean. The conductor was pleasantly helpful when asked for directions.
.

Functional method of trabsoort

By I visited this place🇮🇹🇺🇸🇬🇧🇳🇱🇫🇷 |

The LIRR provides public transportation primarily from Long Island into New York City.

It is fairly efficient and functional, although it seems that the trains don't travel fast- it's a commuter line. The trains seem to running time. Service seems to be frequent.

Fares can be expensive.

The trains are long and always full.

Nice way to tour long island

By Barbara T |

We took the train all over long island and to manhattan. The trains were very timely and for the most part, quite clean. Would use again no problem.

Decent train & subway connections available to all of Long Island

By christopherbO9687MP |

This major suburban station provides decent train & subway connections available to all of Long Island. Note the restrooms inside the train station are not open (yet), so plan accordingly.

Trip to Long Island

By aaron m |

The train arrived on time and got to Mastic Shirley on schedule. If you're traveling to Long Island this is the best way to get there.

Much improved design

By motohigh |

The LIRR station at Jamaica is so much improved over the decades. Well designed flow of passenger traffic. Good information delivery. Could still use more passenger comforts such as bench seating on the platforms, and better signage for handicap access.

Very reliable public transportation

By KevinND |

Have taken the LIRR many times and have yet to be disappointed with the service. Only 4 stars and not 5 because it is expensive... But often worth it to avoid driving and having to find parking.

Best way to get to the city from JFK

By polaraubie |

This was a great way to get to Penn Station without any worry. It was fast, efficient, and comfortable.

Convenient but filthy.

By bigboss6672 |

Can't beat the convenience for getting in and out of the city. Little pricey to do on a daily basis. As a visitor, have been on the train multiple times and have yet to experience it without filth. The people that ride have no respect for anything and do not clean up after themselves for spills or anything. They just get up and move to another seat.

Take the express for less stops.

Quick ride from JFK into the city

By Nattysimps |

First time I used this transportation - it was a quick and easy ride from JFK into New York City. If can be confusing for first time users, but definitely quicker and more economical for singer riders.

Somewhat okay!

By MissTibs |

For efficiency they're great in arriving on time. The seats are nice and comfortable. However, regular passengers traveling on the train take over two or three seats and refuse to move their bags so others can be seated. I will try not to travel by this mode of transportation and stick to either taking the Subway or using Uber.

Great Ride into NYC

By Coops |

Having heard a lot of bad stories about the LIRR we travelled from Ronkonkoma to Penn Station to see the Rockettes Christmas special. Train was very clean and was on time and it was quite an enjoyable trip. Being from Australia I was quite surprised at the cost compared to travelling the same distance in Sydney and surrounding areas but that can’t take away from the good ride we had with no interruptions or issues at all.

I take this daily

By CallHer.Sassy |

Quick way for me to get to & from work & of course to Manhattan/ Brooklyn. It's right across the street from where I live, so it's perfect!!

Time saver !

By Tresor C |

The train was recently free to certain stops with a metro card due to the E train being under construction. This saved me so much time and money.

Took the Train to Visit Our Friends

By Thomas V |

We used this suburban train system to travel out to the eastern part of the island so that we could visit our friends. We arrived on time, but the train is slow because the tracks are old and there are many stops. We had to transfer from one line to another.

Different Day Same Struggles

By Susaneac |

Easiest way to get to Manhattan from our home. Experienced major delays due to a fatality investigation on the tracks. Conductor on way in was very friendly. Not so much on way home. Waiting area in Deer Park station was clean.

You never know what going to get

By BradN |

On the positive side at most stations the train operates almost hourly, except doesn't start until 0500 like in Kew gardens. The train cost are always increasing and the level of service is mediocre at best. I feel the employees don't care cause they are union and have not held to any standard. I work for aviation and we have uniform appearance standards. I would love to know why don't he conductors have standards. 95% of the conductors look like they rolled out of bed, not shaven, wrinkled shirt dirty looking and they act as if they are doing us a favor. The trains are dirty and wonder if the cleaners actually clean with their eyes open or just don't give a dam.
I wish the Lirr could be dependable. Hi leave the house early and can never take for granted I will arrive on time. In our airline we are accountable , so she the train lines.

gets you to where you are going...

By lashell627 |

May not be on time, can be dirty. If you need to get out to Long Island, this will work out for you.

Best way to the city

A large group of us spent five days in Syosset, using the train three days to get in and out of New York City. The seating is good and the prices are good. The quick trip in each day took us to and from a central location at penn Station. Everything about this service was exactly what we hoped. Highly recommended.

Adequate for a tourist.

By dfbf |

Trains are very wobbly and a little slow--even for a 100 year old system. I was stranded for an hour after the conductor gave the wrong information about changing trains in Jamaica. It's a safe, efficient, and expensive if you need to get to Long Island. I would not want to ride twice a day.

Convenient way to travel into the city.

By Kevin L |

Clean and fast transit to the city each day. Price is not cheap but a weekly pass saves a little and it is better than paying for a hotel in the city.

Great way to get from Melville into the city

Reasonable price, good service, pretty quick overall. Racks for luggage. Tickets easy to buy. Help available if you need it.

Pro cons advice of (sub)urban railway

By I visited this place🇮🇹🇺🇸🇬🇧🇳🇱🇫🇷 |

PROS
* The public transportation network from Manhattan to all/most/some of Long Island
* Many stops and stations and routes and lines
* Fairly reasonable and timely service
* Functional rolling stock- not modern; not decrepit
* Not overwhelming standing-room-only occupancies- at least when I was riding
* Significant senior fare reduction
* Quaint method of conductor in regalia and big blue cap coming to inspect and punch tickets and stick the stub over your seat

CONS
* Clearly not modern
* No scenery at all on the journeys

"I VISITED THIS PLACE"
... because that's how I traveled from Manhattan doing touring to my Long Island lodging. The train schedule was clear and understandable. The journey was a functional activity- it was fine and acceptable but not luxurious or exciting.

WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
Yes

WOULD" I VISIT THIS PLACE" AGAIN...
If I needed to do that, I would do that

ADVICE
This is an activity that is done if and when necessary

Can't beat it for $5.

By mizbombshell |

I took the LIRR from 34th Street to Kew Gardens. Much better than taking the E train, since I was coming from the airport with bags. 20 minutes and $5? Can't beat that.

The Saturday Night Drunk Train

By IndyKevin317 |

Let me tell you... the Saturday Night Drunk Train (actually Sunday morning 3am) is an adventure. You are going to see things you can't unsee. You will meet a wide range of colorful characters. It is absolutely safe and everyone for the most part is very friendly. I have taken the train from Ronkonkoma to Penn Station and then the return trip. The train was very crowded both ways but I would recommend it.

Easy journey from NJ to NYC

By Dr Simon Stones |

The LIRR is a super easy way to get from New Brunswick, NJ to NYC. I purchased a ticket from the ticketing machines at the departing station, and a train was soon along. There were plenty of carriages and seats. The journey took around one hour, which soon passed with a good book!

LIRR doesn’t care about you

By Juno14 |

I ride the LIRR every day and dutifully pay $400 for a monthly ticket. I forgot to bring my ticket today. As a result, I had to pay $46 dollars for a trip that I have already paid for, even though the conductor knows me. Worse, when I brought my monthly ticket to the station along with the receipts for the tickets I had to buy on the train, I was told that the railroad’s policy was not to give a refund for ‘forgotten tickets’. (Imagine if I told the conductor my policy is not to pay for the same ride twice!). So, in addition to enduring broken-down equipment, endless delays caused by ‘signal problems’ and filthy train cars, the railroad just took $46 bucks out of my pocket and said “tough nuts”. Ride them at your own peril.

Easy as 1,2,3

By Gregg C |

I am so glad I travelled on the LIRR from Jamaica to Penn Street. It was fast, easy and very convenient as our hotel was only 2 blocks from the station.
I can't believe I initially thought about saving money and getting the subway. Right decision getting the LIRR as it took about 15 mins!
Ok, not as cheap as the subway, but still worth every penny for the ease of it all!

Convenient and inexpensive way into Manhattan

By Stucolco |

Whenever I visit my daughter and her family in Long Island and want to go to Broadway to see a play, I take the LIRR and have been doing so for many years. At present, I start at the Rockville Centre station which has much better service than Gibson which was close to where she used to live. Overall the LIRR service is fast, efficient and being over 65, cheap at $6.50 a trip. It is not always easy to find a seat when the trains are crowded especially due to very inconsiderate passengers who insist on using a seat next to them for their belongings and the trains could be cleaner. But overall, it is the way to travel into Manhattan from Long Island.

Eye Opener!

By Dreamer33694059885 |

This company is ABSOLUTELY! RACIST I witnessed a racist incident on one of there trains. Made a complaint about the racist conductor involved in the incident. Today on 6/18/24 The LIRR decided to release a new policy on their app. The policy basically states that any rider that does not have a ticket will be summons and arrested. Mind you the majority of the riders they’re summoning and getting arrested are Black & Hispanic riders. None are white! Not even the white drug addicts doing drugs in the train cart bathrooms are being arrested for NOT HAVING A TICKET or even a summons. But one thing I will say is they definitely cater kindly to there white riders. That’s all that matters to them. White Privileged at its FINEST BABY! Go LIRR racist morons. Oh one more thing! If you don’t speak English don’t ride there trains the conductor will embarrass you for not knowing any English. They will speak to you as if they’re the deaf ones. HUH!!!! WHAT!!!!! Loudly at that!

Belmont Race track

By Alicia S |

Bought tickets in advance for Jun 5-6, were told trains would run every 15 mins on those 2 days. Unfortunately that was not the case Friday June 5th. We were stuck at the racetrack for over 1.2 till they got a train out.

Easy Peasy and the quickest way from Kennedy into Penn Station. Well worth the money paid for the convenience.

Trains & staff are excellent.
Very reasonable rates. Stations are not adequate. Please hire more staff with good security.

Easy and Quick

By 07Abrianna |

Easy and quick access to key stations without having to use the subway. A bit pricey though but well worth it for the convenience

Too expensive and never on time. Better service 30 years ago

By lovefood |

must make better changes for your good customers for many years. It is hard to sit and wait for over an hour trying to go home to Long Island.

Horrible app and website

By Alex C |

The website and app are beyond horrible. Completely unusable. Shouldn't take a doctor's degree in computer science to navigate and order a train ticket but lo and behold these fine people have managed to do just that.

Value and Comfort Ride into Manhattan

By Purrples |

Nice clean ride from Jamaica Queens to Penn Station Manhattan. Affordable too! Proximity to our Hotel was a great plu!

Nice Ride to the City

By Rich L |

The LIRR is a great way to get to Manhattan from Long Island. It is comfortable, fast and convenient and offers discounted fares for seniors. Recommend.

They don't make it easy that's for sure.

By CSSL M |

No visible signs pointing you to escalators, no one to ask/help. Train lets you off at Penn Station underground. One person in our party could not climb steep stairs after de-boarding train to get up to street level. Construction everywhere at Penn Station. Stations need to have clearer signs to find escalators for those of us that can’t do the stairs. There is an escalator – you need to walk a ways down the platform to find it.

When at Penn Station we tried to ask for help from ticket agents on where we catch the train back to Glen Cove, NY. Could not get a straight answer or directions. The ticket agent was very nice, but not helpful. Took us 30 minutes to walk around and try and figure out where to go to catch our train back to Glen Cove. Confusing system at Penn Station.

Transferring trains from Glen Cove, NY via Jamaica to go to Penn Station was not fun. Train from Glen Cove to Jamaica is a nice, clean, comfortable ride. Train from Jamaica to Penn Station is very crowded and you have to jockey quickly for a seat if you don't want to stand. Watch out for the vomit on the floor of the train and rude people yelling at you. Ah, now that's the NYC that I remember so fondly.

Watch out for ticket rules. Know your peak hours ($13 cost if you travel between 6am-10am Monday through Friday). If you are a senior, you do not get a senior discount during peak times – you must buy a full price adult peak time ticket for $13. Ride from Glen Cove to Penn Station is just over 1 hr one way.

One bright spot – conductor on our train from Glen Cove, NY to Jamaica station was very nice, friendly and helpful. Very nice guy. Answered a lot of questions for us and did his very best to help us. Went out of his way. Very impressed. Too bad the entire train ride is not like the first half (Glen Cove to Jamaica), because that would be nice.

THE WORST. AVOID IF YOU CAN

By Alana D |

The Long Island Railroad is one of the most greedy and inhospitable modes of transportation in New York. Their Customer Service, especially at the Administrative level, is abysmal. Their policies, specifically related to their commuter app (that I'm sure they sank thousands of dollars into building, at the commuter's expense), are draconian and damaging, not to mention truly, deeply inefficient. I'm a lifelong Long Islander and daily commuter to and from Penn Station. I have never been so disgusted by the way a business considers and treats its customers.

Easy Ride Into Manhattan

By The Five Road Trippers 🚙🎡🎢🧳 |

I have no problem driving into Manhattan. Parking is not fun and I hate parking my SUV in the garages. They pack the garages like sardines. Taking the LIRR is comfortable. Get a cup of coffee and a paper and relax on the train. I've been riding the LIRR, my entire life. Service is consistently good.

Easy to find a way

By Mogens A |

Easy to find your way and buy tickets. There were signs all the way and the distance from Terminal 8 to LIRR Jamaica station to Grand Central wasn’t that long to walk.

Transfers are a mess

By Gia |

The transfer at station, that are filthy, are a real mess. We used three stations in total, all are not clean. Train is loud.

Very confusing signage.

By barrykin |

God help you if you are a foreigner like me. Signage is non existant and there are no staff to assist you. Take a taxior an uber.

Comfort and service not complementary

By GTJa |

Comfortable and fast ride to destinations, BUT, service is a whole situation by itself. Fares are increasing but service does not indicate the level of expectancy for the cost to ride.

It's expensive

By cheryl h |

Best to travel on the weekend, but much better ride than the subway. As a tourist, you will probably want to ride the subway just to say you did so. I'm a native NYer, so I'm not thrilled. Long Island Railroad is quicker option to get from Queens to NYC.

Late Morning Meeting

By The Five Road Trippers 🚙🎡🎢🧳 |

Any time I had a meeting in the city, I've been driving in and parking. This morning, I woke up tired and decided to take the train. Smooth ride and quick with a seamless transfer at Babylon station. Trains were clean and conductors were friendly.

Excellent way to get to Manhattan

By Talal J |

If you happen to be at JFK and want to get to the center of Manhattan [or vice versa], this is definitely the route to go. At around $7, this has the least stops, getting you there in about 25 minutes. Seating is often an issue, but beyond that, it's a very good service.

LIRR

By Antonio P |

Convenient train to get from JFK airport to Manhattan if you travel with little luggage. it takes less time than a taxi and is cheaper if two people travel

Reliable and convenient transportation system within Long Island

By 65Guglielmo |

Reliable and convenient transportation system within Long Island and beyond, avoiding traffic jams and linking especially to Ney York city Penn station for further travel within the state or elsewhere

Easy journey

By Darren W |

Great alternative to getting to JFK airport and very straightforward. Buy single ticket at grand central station. Staff very helpful

Not Good

By E P |

The LIRR has made getting to work in Brooklyn extremely difficult. As a commuter for over 40 years what used to tame me 35 minutes now takes me up to an hour and a half to get to Atlantic Ave Brooklyn from Valley Stream. This will drive me to retirement.

Easy transfer

By Helen G |

Such a straightforward way to get to the city avoiding the expense and time of taking a taxi. Used both ways to and from JFK and both times journey were approximately 20 minutes each. Travelled 8pm and 2pm no problems either time. Trains are huge, so many carriages so finding a seat and accommodating suitcases was easy. The absolute bonus is walking out in at Grand Central Main Concourse - what a great welcome to the USA

Most convenient way to get to Manhattan from Long Island

By Stucolco |

Whenever I visit my daughter and her family in Rockville Center and want to see a play on Broadway, I take the LIRR to Penn Station. The senior rate makes it quite affordable and being able to use their app allows you to purchase a ticket on your smart phone and show it to the conductor on the train. My only issue is not the railroad but some of the travelers who feel that they can use the seat next to them for a pocket book or other item, especially when the train is crowded.

Long Island Railroad where would we be without you?!?

By Akuli G |

Efficient. Economical. Wonderful. For a nondriver it takes me and my bike to places we could never get to otherwise.
Long live the Long Island Railroad!

Awful

By Julio C L |

The service is absolute garbage. I recently experienced getting my MTA account blocked for ”waiting for the train attendant to come to me before activating my ticket”. My ticket must be activated “upon arriving at the platform” and allegedly is on the terms and conditions. Had to overpay for a rush hour ticket since I was unable to access my ticket wallet. What a joke.

Build up the communities

By danfriedmanmd |

Trains are the basis for many towns and cities throughout the country. People set up shop wherever there was a depot/station. While trains make noise they also are instrumental in getting people from point a to point but. Theeefore, the LIRR should build up the areas surrounding its stations. They did a great job with mineola, but areas like stony brook and port Jefferson could use some of their assistance

Easy and convenient.

By #1LakerDad |

Used the LIRR each day from Penn Station to The Open. Trains are not as frequent as the subway but fewer stops and not as crowded. You don't need a metro card, just buy your ticket. Easy transportation!

Fun and easy

By Deb M |

We had decided to take the air train and rail road to Manhatten rather than taking a taxi. Easy and fast. Would highly recommend...probably saved an hour. Not to mention half the price.

The fastest ride to Brooklyn from Queens and met many friends

By hatson49@aol.com |

It takes me 28mins. to get to Downtown Brooklyn from Queens, you can't beat that. I have met several friends riding the LIRR and I don't mean acquaintances. We go out we visit each other homes. The ride is smooth, you can read your paper. I don't know why I was driving into Brooklyn.

Convenient choice especially during OFF-PECK Hours!

By James.R |

I Live in Queens, need to go Downtown(Brooklyn)(Manhattan) Easy! Quiet!. Need to go to Hicksville to (Lawyers)(Motorcycle Shop) Quick! Sometimes you need to leave the Car!! You Wont Be Stuck in that traffic!!!!

Great service

By joe292 |

Good service and almost direct in to Manhatten and not to expensive ($14.50 return off peak). be warned the conducter checks for tickets on all journeys.

Good journey

By schumigirl |

Used this service from Ronkonkoma to Penn St and back.

Trains are fine and reliable. But hate waiting at Penn St when they don't announce platform till a few minutes before train leaves........the mad rush is awful! People just run. Not fun. Would hate to deal with that every day.

Prices good for length of journey.

Excellent commute

By skc97 |

I used LIRR for the 90 minute trip from Penn Station to visit a friend in Huntington, Long Island. It was a pleasant trip, stopping at the main hub station at Jamaica, then making select stops all the way. Easy purchase of tickets at Penn station, although platform was not clearly indicated on the display. Train guards punched holes for each section travelled.

Be On Your Toes for Schedule Changes...

By Eugene M |

I have lived in NYC all my life. It's fast paced and demands your attention. To which I would say "stay on your toes" and "pay attention to all that goes on around you!". In regard to the LIRR - be alert to track and train changes if you want to get to your destination.

is the money worth it

By Farah B |

I spend an extra 200 to ride this railroad but I feel like I'm always fighting for a seat or running around guessing what track I'm on. I wish it was a little more structured, like - all trains that stop on Jamaica are tracks 12-16. It's a clean train and I love the fact that I get to Penn in 20 minutes. Staff are friendly and courteous. I do also want to add

ONce you figure out payment it's good

By Happy T |

We had a hard time figuring out logistics from JFK but the ride itself was quick. Sound system was awful, all garbled. Glad we speak English.

Perfect Method of Travel 🚉🚇

By The Five Road Trippers 🚙🎡🎢🧳 |

I needed a ride into the city. Bringing the car was definitely not an option. I took a peak train which turned out to be a one seat ride into Manhattan. 64 minute ride Vs. 90 minutes plus parking and walking. It just works well!

Necessary

By Eric C. |

You might be thinking, "Why did this guy give a review of the Jamaica LIRR railroad station 5 stars?! After all, it's the bane of many commuter's existence."
The fact is that for many of us whose train ends in Penn Station, it's the only way ti access a train going to Flatbush.
It's not perfect, but it is what we need. Hence, five stars.

Could be better maintained

By Sachin K |

Long Island Railroad is an important means of commute for long islanders. Jamaica Station is an important junction for onward connections to JFK airport via AirTran and NYC subway trains. However it could be better maintained by the concerned authorities.

Weeknight Ride

By The Five Road Trippers 🚙🎡🎢🧳 |

We rode the train to get into the city for a dinner out. The train was on time and clean going in. We rode into Grand Central Terminal on the way in. Going home, we left Penn Station. The ride home was very crowded on the first train due to the Yankee Game and the Fall Out Boy concert at Forest Hills Stadium. Our second train was still crowded but a more relaxed crowd.

If you are looking to beat the traffic and save on parking, the Long Island Railroad is the way to go!

The way to go from AirTrain

By Aaron R |

We used LIRR to get into and out of the City for some quick sightseeing on our one-night layover at JFK. Easy connection (although the ticket kiosks can be a little confusing at first). Although its more expensive than the subway, it's much easier and quicker -- well worth the cost, we thought.

KNOW YOUR ENTRY AND EXIT POINTS AS THE WORTHLESS STAFF WILL NOT HELP YOU!!!!!!!!!!

By Daniel A |

We had a splendid two weeks in New York and D.C. and I read tripadvisor for all my traveling ideas and tips. I checked how to get from the Amtrak in Penn Station to my hotel, JFK Inn for a return flight to Beijing. I read the reviews concerning the Long Island Rail Road and everyone says it is easy. I listened and didn’t worry. I didn’t read many negative reviews. Please pay attention to this: MAKE SURE YOU KNOW YOUR ENTRY AND EXIT POINTS! THE STAFF THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY USELESS AND HAVE THE WORST ATTITUDE! The NYC subway staff and Amtrak staff were so lovely and accommodating and these jerks, what good are they? It sounds small of me to say this based on one experience but I got the same treatment from the staff at Long Island Rail Road from Penn Station and the ones at the Jamaica stop. They seem to not want to be there. To do their job, you have to want to help people. They gave me a disgusted look and offered no advice. I decided to ask someone who was just looking at me and my wife. He did offer advice but he gave us the wrong advice and told me I needed to buy different tickets. He did that to create a diversion so he could try and take off with my luggage and my wife. Thankfully my wife doesn’t take crap from anyone and she pushed him off and held onto my luggage, mind you while she was safeguarding her luggage and the man fled. I told the staff and they didn’t give a rat’s behind. Thankfully a young lady saw our dire need for help and she assisted and told me the exact way to get to where we needed to go. It’s my fault for not reading thoroughly the exact entry and exit locations and the other is this could have been avoided if the staff at Long Island Rail Road did their job instead of being on their cell phones and answering basic questions concerning their rail service. I’ll never use their trains again and would rather pay the horrifying taxi fees than pay use the Long Island Rail Road ever again. While on board the train, there was this helpful gentleman and I asked him for help and he did his best. Mind you, he wasn’t affiliated with the train’s staff and was a common man. I asked him because we both had on Oakland Raider jackets.

Great way to travel to JFK International Airport

By Mike M |

Always depended on the NYMTA subway system to get to either Howard Beach or Jamaica to transfer to the JFK AirTrain, but if there are delays from NYC to those stations, the Long Island Rail Road trains from NY Penn Station to Jamaica will get you there in time to be able to take your flight. It's faster than the subway, especially if you don't take an express, and fare is cheaper than taking a cab or limo. For some with luggage, the racks will take the bags with no problem. Very efficient way to travel to Long Island or to the airport.

So much money invested stupidly

By Ezekiel B |

The lirr turn around and spent a fortune improving the Northport train stop. But all the money they spent they couldn't put a few benches on the platform. What a joke. They are useless.

They should have left the train stop the way it was and just put a few benches to sit on, on the platform instead. All the customers would have appreciated that much more. But do you think the lirr cares about the people taking the train every day? Nope. If they did they would have put a few benches on the platform.

The lirr corporation fails to realize if not for us taking the train every day. They would be shutting down. They need to stop thinking about themselves. And think about the people who actually take the train every day.

Ride to JFK and further afield...

By therichastill |

As a visitor to New York City I was leaving from JFK airport so used the Long Island Rail Road to get to Jamaica station. This is probably the quickest and greenest way to get there.

I bought a ticket a Penn Station Moynihan Hall which combined the fare to the LIRR and the air train which was convenient. I would definitely recommend taking a little bit of time to check out this lovely station. It is very spacious and they have an excellent food court.

The train I travelled on was clean on the inside however leg room is a little bit limited and also bearing in mind there will be travellers going to JFK the luggage areas could be a bit larger. The windows of the train were filthy on the outside so it was not great to see out which was a shame.

The train ran on time and there are regular trains to Jamaica from Penn station so it is well served.

The LIRR also runs trains to Mets - Willets Point which served La Guardia Airport and Flushing Meadows and Citi-Field Park where the New York Mets play.

Great transport option

By Sandave5756 |

We used this train from and back to JFK airport from the city. It was very easy to purchase tickets and navigate. The trains are frequent. The carriages are very clean and the seats comfortable. Announcements help you keep track of which station you are approaching. Both our journeys were good. This is definitely a good option if you are on a budget but even if not it is a reliable way to travel. We recommend it.

Much better than the City Subway

By tisha108 |

I enjoy taking the LIRR instead of city subway. The ride is much faster. The cars, most of the time, are very clean. Make sure to get your ticket before boarding the train, and enjoy your ride. The LIRR is very convenient and so quick.

Cheap public transport

By Mary K |

Train was clean (litter collected while waiting on departure) and departed on time. This travel was quicker than Metro as we were going from 4th Ave in Brooklyn to Jamaica, Queens. Only a couple of dollars more too. In train automatic destination board and announcements were late in coming on so were a bit behind to start with but caught up. Made us smile! Will use in future to travel from JFK to Manhattan as cheaper than a cab and journey time not much different to cab but a lot quicker than subway.

This is a TERRIBLE!!!!! service, on August 20th, 2016, I purchased a package to splish splash, the park was closed due to flooding, I didnt get to use the service i paid for, Splish Splash said I had to contact LIRR for a refund, when i contacted LIRR they were less than helpful, they took my money and told my credit card company i used the service. 1st of all i did ride the train, however, the only reason i rode the train was because i purchased a package to go to splish splash, the park was closed at 11am, i was left stranded at the park, in the rain until after 5pm, and LIRR still told my credit card company i used the service, and charged my card, even after i explained to them that the park was closed, and splish splash refunded tickets that were purchased directly from splish splash. I do NOT!!! recommend this service to anyone, if something goes wrong, customer service will STEAL!!! YOUR MONEY!!!!

The trains were immaculately clean
The conductor (complete with uniform and hat) checked tickets both ways (so it felt quite safe), and the trains were on time.
We went to port Washington, a lovely city for a day visit (about $25 return). It was a great service all the way and easy to navigate

It only takes a little over an hour to get from the Ronkonkoma station (which is the closest station to me) to Penn Station, which is faster than driving and avoids all the traffic. We took the LIRR when driving to NYC from Jamaica and it's a good connection. If you take all into account it takes you some time to get there.

from jfk to penn station

By allan_y1965 |

i took the airtrain from jfk to jamaica station and transferred to the long island railway(lirr) to penn station. very convenient, fast and cheap way to travel to manhattan.

great way to get from jfk airport to Manhattan

By mark c |

If you land at JFK get the airtrain from your terminal to Jamaica station it costs $5 you pay once you get to Jamaica station you are best getting a $30 7 day metro card as this does the airtrain the subway and the buses ,once at Jamaica station go to ticket booth get a return ticket to Penn station it takes about 15 minutes from Jamaica station to Penn station and you are in the heart of Manhattan, very easy trip plus you see the real New york

2025 and LIRR still can't get it right

By Eon R |

The 1012 train out of Valley Stream arrived 7 minutes late
Needed to connect at Jamaica to GCS
The train was at Jamaica Station to GCS as soon as we pull in the train departs without wasting 2 minutes for passengers to transfer..the next train to GCS was 18 minutes. LIRR has no Regards for passengers as they are thr only commuter train serving Long Island.
Absolutely a travesty in 2025 we still have to deal with a monopoly that is not held accountable. They can be late ..they can delay you but no penalties. They still want you to pay the full fare for substandard service.
I wish all LIRR riders would just strike and not use the LIRR for 1 week. That way a few workers can get laid off and feel the pain of not being able to fight back like residents of Long Island and any other passenger traveling on this railroad
2025 and they STILL have switch probems..the workers are really AI..Artificial Intelligence..except it's true when it comes to them " Artificial." We will be rid of them soon enough.

Easy

By jane s |

Great way to get into Manhattan . JFK air tram to Jamaica station....NYC without paying hig taxi cost

Worst train service

By JCL001 |

LIRR absolutely provides the worst train service.
Cost goes up and service goes down. We have been having switch problems for years and they stil don’t fix it.

Jamaica station. On the way home from the airport

By Bernardo F |

Pretty big station. In Jamaica. Usually don't take this on your way home from the airport. Several tracks. It's fairly clean. And the security is fine. But certainly Don't Stray too far away from the station.

Traveling back to GA

It's always so much more convenient to get to JFK when you take the LIRR.even with the construction it was on time nd the ride was smooth

I hopped a ride from jamaica station to penn station in Manhattan.Had a great time sight seeing the big apple

Tough travel to New York City this Winter and Spring. Bad weather, shutdowns, accidents, trees, fires. Ugh!
C'mon guys, you can do it. Let's get on track for the September School openings.

Some neat old train stations are worth a visit out on Long Island

By LisandroVoyager |

Many LIRR stations have some charm. Some still serve as train stations, while a few serve as museums or other public facilities. The station in Greenport serves as a museum, and is very close to the Railroad Museum of Long Island, a treat for railroad buffs.

Comfy and Convenient

By JenellBStewart |

When you live on long island going into the city can be a chore. Driving to the city during the week is a mess unless it's late at night.I appreciate the LIRR being accessible to me with many times of operation. The schedule is not as frequent as the NYC subway, so always plan your trip ahead of time. If you miss a train it could be an hour before another one arrives.

The LIRR, is very comfy. Very well lit. The view into the city is always nice. The temperature is always appropriate. You can hear each stop clearly. There is also a bathroom. I avoid using it by planning accordingly but there has been a few times I couldn't wait and I was thankful that the bathroom was there.

Wish the fare could be a bit cheaper.

Feels very 3rd World

By Camper32802113211 |

Very 3rd World. They are not at all client focused. Is it really so difficult to tell your PAX what side doors will open b4 entering Penn Station? And why does it take over 2 min to open the doors along the way?

Usually crowded and late, among other things.

By sethreaux |

Last time they couldn't take credit cards. Steadily increasing prices with steadily decreasing reliability, comfort, and tolerability. Dirty, disgusting, smells like a porta potty. Consistently miserable; never fails to disappoint- as if I even need to write any of this.

Crowded but tolerable!

By luvcruzin2 |

It depends upon the time traveling as we had some very busy times where there was barely any room to stand to where there were several seats available. It is very easy to use and there are people who can help you understand how to get the tickets, which platform to go to, etc. It is a quick, easy way to get around to NYC and then use the subway system.

Confortable ride

By Guillermo R |

They usually are on schedule and the rides are great. I would suggest they add wifi to make the long trips more productive

Good transport but more expensive than subway

By arrietty01 |

I have used this rail from JFK airtrain to NY and its much quicker than the subway but more expensive (about $30 return). Half that price if you are are over 60 but if you want an express to NY, its the way to go. Took me about 40 minutes instead of over an hour by subway (cost $3 only on subway)

convenient

By Nessie M |

I love taking the LIRR when I am in a rush to get into Manhattan. From Jamaica-Penn its about a 7-9 dollar fee, and quick as 20-30 mins. The carts are clean and very well maintained.

Other passengers were helpful, but terminal signs were a challenge

By mlish47 |

I am an older (70) solo traveler and so appreciated a younger passenger moving from the rear (closest to door) seat for me as I had a suitcase with me. The train had good signage for stops even though the conductor couldn't tell me there were 3 stops between where I needed to get off and where I got on... instead he named them all when his answer should have been "get off at the 4th stop" Access to the train in the station was a bit challenging because you has to know the town at the end of the line instead of a stop along the route. i.e. I wanted to get off in Jamaica, and it wasn't listed in the terminal at Penn Station.

More of an annoyance than anything

By Nick Z |

This is by far the worst organization. They are so disorganized and hemorrhage money with bloated over budget projects and many inefficiencies with staff and time management. Then the continue to use trains from the 1970s! You cannot make this stuff up.

They recently changed all the train schedules which is a major disruption to people like me that go to Ronkonkoma. They have a 5:04p direct and a 5:59p direct. So if you get off at 5p and be near Penn, you’re now waiting over 45min for the next train. Or deal with a transfer which may or may not be on time for the connection.

The Grand Central line only offers 1 train direct to Ronkonkoma which is a 5:39p, the only other train is a transfer at 5:59p. Needless to say they really screwed those going to Ronkonkoma. Would you believe they have a few trains that go all the way east to Brentwood (2 stops away) and heads back to NYC! What is the meaning of that? Makes no sense.

They are an abusive monopoly.

Best deal in town

By F F |

I'm a lifelong New Yorker and I've used the subway for years. When the LIRR is running it's usually on time and hands down better than the subway for travel between Manhattan and Queens, but there is a catch. If the schedule works for your travels, and if it's running on time, it can't be beat.

Even if it's not on time, it's the best way to JFK airport when used with the AirTrain.

The subway on the weekends or at night is usually under construction or the train route is changed. It's not uncommon that a poorly audible announcement will be made to say that any given train will run local instead of express (while you are on the train).

The subway is a necessity but the LIRR helps avoid some of that. For a slightly higher fee you trade bad service for better service, homeless beggars for drunk Rangers and Islanders fans (annoying, but can be entertaining), and a more personal approach since you can ask the ticket punchers for directions if you are lost with the LIRR.

Atlantic terminal Schedule Is Horrible!

By Odyssey655607 |

Atlantic terminal trains pushed aside to accommodate the new grand central line.

There are hardly any trains connecting at Jamaica and when trains are available they are in track 11/12.

Leaving Brooklyn is a nightmare!

Not quite sure this is a travel spot!

By Bernardo F |

You need to go through Jamaica on your way either to Long Island, or to New York City, but it's certainly nothing that exciting here. Crowded platforms, not enclosed, so they're hot in the summer and cold in the winter, and wet in the rain. Poorly designed for sure.

Good connections

By Jonathan W |

Was pretty happy going from JFK to Manhattan by public transport. The Air Train to Jamaica and then the LIRR to Penn was a good balance between speed and cost. The terminal itself at Jamaica is nicely laid out and is very easy to navigate. I'm sure the LIRR further into Queens is just as nice - outside of peak commuting time at least.

regular past commuter

By rlv |

my favorite was double decker trains...used lirr for years...was prefered choice of public
transit....best to buy tickets day before...rather than everybody trying to use vending
machines all at once...while train is approaching station...

Easy trip

By KeithH123 |

We used the railroad to transfer from our hotel at JFK via the Airtrain to a new hotel in Islandia. We were tight for time so we had get straight on the train and buy tickets on board. We were told that this was a more expensive option than buying at the machines but the fare was only 16 dollars each anyway! The trip took about an hour and we had a hotel shuttle from Central Islip station. We were going to a wedding and some guests took a taxi costing 200 dollars so it was a nobrainer for us. I would recommend the service to anyone, it was great.

Very easy to use

By Tanglewild |

It was easy to purchase tickets from the machine, and we were able to take advantage of senior tickets, for over 60's. That was an unexpected bonus. Best to selective about times to travel as trains can become packed. We took several most enjoyable trips.

LIRR - Slightly better than expected

By NsLevine |

From Forest Hills to Freeport - Saturday - Off Peak. Tried to buy tickets via LIRR web site. This feature is no longer available, resulting in minor inconvenience. Was able to purchase ticket at computerized kiosk on the Forest Hills station platform. Transaction was quick and easy. Ticket price was reasonable, including senior discount. Train arrived exactly per schedule. Scheduled travel time was 30 minutes. However, several delays resulted in actual travel time of 45 minutes. This might be an issue, if one was being met at the destination station. Train cars were more crowded than expected for a Saturday but, I was able to find a seat. Was very surprised that a conductor NEVER passed through to collect my ticket.

Very Easy to Use

By Nicnak100 |

My family and I used the LIRR in August 2018 for the very first time leaving Jamaica station to go to Penn Station in Manhattan (we had arrived into JFK and taken the air train from JFK to Jamaica). I was initially worried as I hadn't used any public transport in NY before. I was stress free, easy to use, well signposted, and cheap!

A loyal customer

I bought a 10 ticket bc I was moving out of New York during this time I used my tickets and I paid $4.00dls extra to used them when it was pick. 08/07/2019 I took the train at 7:54 pm the ticket guy ( I apologize but I don’t know his title) charged people next to me $4.00 dollars extra to go to the same location however when he came to me he charged me $6.00 dls ???????? How come? Meaning depending of the person this ticket guy has the authority to decide how much he has to charged?????? Can please some one explain me this ????? Same destination different price. Why??????

convenient connection from Penn Station

By markopolo57 |

Took the LIRR to Jamaica to eventually connect to the JFK airport area. A little crowded in the rush hour and can be challenging if you have lot of luggage. If not, it is cheaper and saves the hassle of going through NYC traffic .

Hassle Free to Manhattan

LIRR Wine Country One Day Getaway

By Mary L |

First stop was Duckwalk Winery where we got 6 tastings. Had a great time. Next stop was Greenport where we were on own to eat, shop and sightsee. Food was really good at Crabby Jerry's on the water and the view was great! Next stop was Briermier's Farm for some great pies and fresh produce. Last stop before heading home was Baiting Hollow Farm Winery. The place was packed and too noisy. They do have horse rescue on the premises where they offer tours weather permittting. Unfortunately, it was cancelled due to rain. They did offer food which was really expensive and not the best. We were told they were also having pie tasting which we couldn't find.

Escort from the LIRR - Ron - was great - friendly and knowledgeable.

It all depends on when you're traveling

By tracingthings |

If you're a daily weekday commuter, your experience will be very different. When I travel from Long Island into the city or the airport, the LLRR is one of the best ways to travel.

Very Good

By Rschagrin |

Took the Airtrain from JFK to the Jamaica station to catch the LIRR to Syosset. You can get the subway to Queens and Manhattan.

Quick way to Manhattan

By John B |

Good fast railway, only one stop (Woodside) otherwise straight from Jamaica to Penn Station. Cost I think about $8
Not the smartest train I have ever travelled in but certainly the longest -loads of carriages (but still full)

Best Way Between Manhattan and Long Island

By TYPSUKR |

We were attending a wedding in Westbury, and had to get out there from Manhattan. Even on a Saturday, we were able to take advantage of the frequent service on line out there. Same for Sunday, when we had to come back into the city. Trains are clean, and the vending machines are easy to navigate.

7.25 and fast

By AK |

costs usd 7.25 if you dont include the ridiculous 5 bucks to exit air train and its super fast and beats a taxi and traffic any day straight to Penn Station in 20 min

Thanks goodness for the Atlantic ticket

By Rendolph W |

The best thing the LIRR did for them-self and I was the Atlantic ticket. It is truly a WIN win. Some of the trains/card need to be upgraded but it's still better than the subway.

JFK to Penn Station

By knhall1 |

I will never take another taxi from JFK into The City again. Cheaper, faster and less hassle. Take air tram to Jamaica station... use the machine to purchase a ticket and You can relax as you ride to Penn Station. Of course it was a little dingy and there was an empty coffee cup Rolling around the floor by my seat... but I will take that any day before I pay 4 times the cost to a cabbie that may or may not know where they are going (and may or may not give me a heart attack with their crazed driving). LIRR all the way!

Very efficient means of travel.

By Mike F |

Travelled from Jamaica to Penn Station. Ticket machines easy to use. Trains prompt to the minute and carriages clean and tidy.

Somewhat a good option to regular subways

By yolanda b |

I take the Long Island Rail Road [LIRR] from Jamaica Station when I am late for work. It takes approx. 20 minutes to 34th Street vs. 45 - 1 hr. From there, you can get the A, E and other trains to take you either uptown or downtown. I also use the LIRR to go from Queens to Brooklyn which saves me approx. 1 hr. The trip takes approx. 25 minutes and takes you into downtown Brooklyn near Atlantic avenue which is near the courts and major shopping area.

Part of journey from JFK to Manhattan

By J_Jarndyce |

When leaving the Airtrain from JFK we had the choice of the E train or the Long Island Railroad (LIRR). We chose the latter because it is only $5 for seniors and there would be less steps at Penn Station. The latter wasn't true but anyway the ride was comfortable and quick. We then took a yellow cab to our hotel. On the way back the LIRR was crowded and the journey wasn't pleasant with suitcases.

Weekend Visit

By 831TomSullivan |

When people say that New Yorkers are rude, they're referring to the ticket windows at Penn Station. We are native NYCers and know of what we speak. We had never used the LIRR before (we were going to the Mets game) and didn't understand the ticketing system. Didn't matter to these jerks; the actually shooed us away and called "next" while we were standing there. THIS is what people from around the country see and remember when visiting NYC. It's a shame, but management won't do a thing about it.

Easy

By houstontravelingfool |

We went from Penn Station to Manhasset in 37 minutes. Tickets for seniors were only $6 which I thought was a bargain. The train was on time and I appreciated that the next stop was announced throughout the trip. The train was fairly clean and not crowded at all (about 2pm). The man collecting tickets was friendly and pleasant. All in all, a good experience.

Helpful staff, reasonable price, easy to navigate

By busitraveller_10 |

The LIRR train system is clean, inexpensive and convenient. It is a great way to get around the city.

Word of caution

By rBlake989 |

This is not a bad review, this is a warning. Google "The drunk train" before boarding this train. It's a great way to get from point a to b, just be ready for the show! Or do not board.

Best form of travel to Midtown

By AwayDays_Rich |

Arrived at Jamaica by Air Train and headed over to the LIRR platforms. Used the ticket machine, no issues.

As we were based opposite Penn Station, journey was a cinch.

Will use next time for sure.

Safe, clean, quiet

By APatrickF |

I've found the fastest way from JFK to midtown is via the Air Train and the LIRR. The trains run on time. The people tend to mind their own business and keep to themselves. The trains are pretty clean considering the number of passengers.

An easy commute to the City

I love the LIRR because you know exactly what time your train is coming. There's no headache in New York City traffic , the trains are clean and comfortable. The conductors are courteous and helpful.

Good service--on time most of the time

By Queen C |

Love the Jamaica station---this is the connection hub--since every train stops at this station--its easy to get to any destination that the LIRR travels to.

Great way to get to LI

By cndirector1 |

Went to visit family on Long Island while on business in NYC. Departed from Grand Central Station and arrived in Huntington Station with no issues. New Yorkers at Grand Central were a great help in navigating to get on the correct train. Easy to do, can't wait to visit again.

I am really upset with their failure to inform people.

By sandrahannelore |

My husband and I were planning to go to a matinee in NYC today. We were at our stop at Gibson Station in Valley Stream to take the train to the Jamaica Station in order to transfer to the subway. The LIRR only runs every hour (Far Rockaway Line) from our Station. The train comes in, we are at the back of the platform and we wait for the doors to open.We start running towards the front and the train leaves without us- 4 people - The Conductor just ignored us. Of course we missed the show.
We take the train all the time - this has never happened before.

Good efficient way to get to JFK air train

By Bernardo F |

A good efficient way to get to the JFK air train. Lots of different trains, they're usually on time, though the prices are a bit higher than they should be considering sometimes you can't get a seat.

Efficient, Reasonably Priced & The Quickest Way into New York

By Emily Mc |

Using the Long Island Railway made my journey into New York quick and easy - it was simple to purchase tickets, board the train and get to my final destination. As I arrived in New York I simply followed the signs from the Air Train to the LIRR where I was able to purchase a ticket for $7.75 (off-peak single) which took me from Jamaica to Penn Station - a very cheap price considering that a taxi would've cost me around $50-60. From there I was able to board an Express Train which went straight through to Penn Station which took around 20-25 minutes. Trains depart every 10-20 minutes and are clearly marked with what stations they go through - make sure you check before going to a platform as there are a range of destinations that the LIRR goes to.

Once aboard the train there was more than enough room for both me and my suitcases as well as leaving room for other passengers to get passed. When I completed my return journey to JFK I was unable to get a seat but there was no trouble standing with two suitcases as there was more than enough room near the doors. Make sure you have your tickets on you as an inspector will come through the train and mark your tickets to both validate your journey and prevent the ticket from being used again.

Seriously traumatizing.

By VanessaSverige |

Pee on the floors in the train, dirty seats, bad railway and bad trains. You were thrown around in your seat since it felt like the train almost fell of the railways a lot of times. Also it was a bit creepy during night time.
I did not take the lirr train back to Jamaica.
I recommend you to take the subway or a taxi. (Not a taxi when you have a flight to arrive to since you might have a 2 hour ride instead of 30 min depending on traffic)
Actually, just take the regular subway and you'll be fine. :)

Train service from Jamaica Station to Penn Station

By Andrew M |

We took the LIRR between Jamaica Station and Penn Station. Tickets are cheaper if purchased at the ticket machines which are located just before entry to the Jamaica Station. Tickets may also be purchased on the train, but this is the more expensive option. The cost of the tickets will vary depending on whether you are in a "peak" or "off peak" period. Peak period in the morning, is towards Manhattan, between 6am-10am. The stops of the train depend on the line taken, as there are three possible stops, Woodside, Forrest Hills and Kew Garden. We only remember one stop of the train in both directions.

The train system seems a bit aged, as there are no electronic displays on the train showing time of travel or next station. Announcements are made by the driver, stating the next station. It is possible to purchase a ticket at Penn Station from a cashier who will explain what track should be used. We found it difficult at both Jamaica Station and Penn Station to determine which track we should be waiting at for the train, as there were many tracks which displayed the same destination. My advice is to pay careful attention to the announcements and track displays to ensure that you are on the correct train. If in doubt, ask the cashier or other station personnel, as it will be too late once you have boarded the train.

The tickets are valid for 90 days after purchase. We hope there are improvements to this transportation system, as it is more comfortable than using the subway from Jamaica station.

Easy connections from and to the subway and sky train. Easy online access to schedules and maps. Good service, comfortable seating.

Best way to and from the airport

By mgh2020 |

There are several ways to get from JFK airport (and others) into NYC or Brooklyn but the LIRR is the best. Cabs are very expensive, Lyft is an option but still expensive compared to LIRR. The subway is the least expensive but seems to take forever and you're underground a lot more than on the railroad which costs about $5.00 more than the subway and less if you are a senior. Getting there from JFK you have to by a metro card to take the Airtrain to the depot. That costs $5 per person. Put extra on the card if you are planning to use the subway during your visit. You can reload it at subway kiosks. You'll have a separate ticket for the LIRR which you can buy in advance and then activate the ticket once on board (wait until the train is pulling out before activating it on your cell phone, its timed) Check the internet for destinations but Penn station in Manhattan and Barclay's Center in Brooklyn are two of them. Going to JFK you are going to Jamaica station. Exit the train and walk forward and up the escalator to the depot lobby and transfer to the Airtrain to all the airport terminals.

One of the better transportation hubs

By CeeeCeee631516 |

Great hub to get to the AIRTRAIN to JFK and connect to LIRR trains.(I wish LaGuardia had the same :-( ) Accessible to the handicap and accessible at all hours of the day and night for those early morning and late night flights.

Best way from JFK to Manhattan

By Bruce H |

What a great way to get from JFK to Manhattan! Took the LIRR for the first time out of the airport. The folks working the platforms were very helpful and didn’t seem to mind my ignorance of the system. It was midafternoon so the train was not full so maybe a different experience during rush hour. Seats were comfortable and the ride quick. It is the only way I will go from now on! It was also a bargain at $5.

St. Patrick day

We took the train from penn station to lynbrook the experience was good easy to purchase tickets and not a long ride at all. It was pretty empty and bad the entire back of the train to ourselves

The new IPhone ap makes traveling so much easier

By Stucolco |

The new MTA eTix ap now makes it so much easier to travel on the LIRR. You buy tickets on your phone, activate them just before boarding the train and show them to the conductor when requested. No more hassle to use the ticket machine outside the station or paper tickets to misplace. Just make sure that your phone is charged. On this New York visit, I took the LIRR from Rockville Centre to Penn Station and back, and both trains were right on time.

Pleasant way to travel

By Carla M |

Firstly, there were no obvious signs that you needed to purchase tickets
beforehand so we boarded at Jamaica Station without them. Of course, we were literally caught empty-handed when the conductor requested them. They are sold en route but at a higher price. But he was a great guy and gave us a discount as we were tourists and with a senior to boot. The ride was pleasant and the seats very comfortable. A very nice way to travel.

Best choice for getting to Manhattan from the airport

By Samantha S |

We landed at JFK and caught the airport train to Jamaica station. Where we then caught the Long Island RR into Manhattan to Penn Station.
Was so easy to buy tickets and find the platform. Once in the train it was comfortable with only one other person on the carriage.
Very highly recommended for people coming from the airport!

Easy ride through the city to Jamaica Station air train

By Bernardo F |

It's an easy ride to get to the Jamaica air train. If it's on time, and it you can get a seat. It's needing a few updates, and the trains are a bit old and this time it wasn't very clean.

OK transit

By 10 yr old traveler |

Well what do you expect it's New York. The tickets are a little more on the expensive side. Or if you are using the subway in NYC you have a transit card and the prices are cheaper (2-5 dollars). So the trains are clean, not trashy. The stations are good but if you are afraid of heights that might be a problem. The Freeport, Bellmore, Merrick, Wantagh stations and more are elevated a good 25-30 feet of the ground. Trains come around every 15-30 minutes depends on what time of day. But still it is ok transit.

convenient and inexpensive

By Preeya I |

We have no better choice than this train. It's the only way that we can go to Jamaica station for sure. Most of the seats in the train the empty seats will be taken by the bags of the passengers who took the next seat and they would not even think of others at least taking the bags out of the seats who need the seats. We used to use excellent transportation in Japan It is tough and inconvenient for us to use this slow motion train and sometimes it did not operate. Inside the train is o.k. don't expect much more than it is. Also when we came from Ronkonkoma station to Jamaica station with your luggage it makes it more inconvenient. We have to stop to buy tickets for air train which is really awkward not only we have to dip the ticket at the right side in order to get out. Unfortunately, this train is quite out of date and inconvenience compared with other countries which is more upbeat --easy to use by touching and have more spaces for luggage to get out.. In the US, the transportation by train absolutely needs to improve. It is really out of date and it happened quite a few times that the train suddenly did not operate! Chaos!! We almost missed the plain in the morning!

Trains safe but be aware of your surroundings.

By rogern577 |

Ticketing great, timetable perfect the only downside is the intimidation especially around Jamaica station, if you are a suit, just be a little on the careful side especially the later the evening gets, while on trains and platform 100% safe, on leaving though, real threat especially if you are on your own and perhaps look a little unsure of your ware abouts.

Easy Ride Home

By The Five Road Trippers 🚙🎡🎢🧳 |

I took the LIRR from Woodside home in the afternoon. Quick ride to Jamaica with a seamless transfer to an express train towards Patchogue. Both trains were clean. I love the double decker train. It's a more comfortable ride.

LIRR Experience

By KatrinaNYC |

Riding the LIRR for over 20+ years, although do not ride everyday as in the past when i worked in the city, the Pt Washington line is still pretty good, cars are pretty clean and have been running on time (at least when i travel on week-ends).

My favorite way to get to NYC

By blonnka |

Our favorite airline does not fly directly into NYC. So, we went into Islip Long Island and took the train into the city. This took us straight to the subway, and we were able to get to our hotel with a minimum walk, and all for under $25 round trip!

We grabbed lunch to eat on the train, and settled in for the ride.

Helpful transportation-- depending on where you are & where you're going

By Therese H |

Off season on Long Island is a different experience, and mostly for the better, I'm sure. This was our first time here, and wanted to try LIRR when it worked for our destination. It was a challenge to buy our ticket from a machine (in Roslyn) and get to our destination (Huntington) via Mineola. But the car was clean and updated and staff operating was helpful when we could find one.
Return travel was difficult due to reduced schedule, though. Check your schedules!

Good transportation!

Rode the LIRR into the city dozens of times in my younger years from Long Beach and Ronkonkoma. A lot cheaper back then, lol!

Love the Train BUT It Gets Crowded

By ClintPage |

Love the LIRR, but it's sometimes crowded and is sometimes unreliable. You can take it from NYC to Hamptons and spots in between.. not cheap but a fun way to travel.

Sunday Morning Ride to NYC

By The Five Road Trippers 🚙🎡🎢🧳 |

We took a ride into the city for a Sunday of fun. The ride was smooth and on time. Trains were clean and conductors were friendly. The transfer at Jamaica was short and pleasant. We love the LIRR, much easier than driving.

Travel from NYC to JFK

By Peter S |

We were first time visitors to NYC and had a 6 pm flight to catch from JFK on a Sunday.
We trawled the Web for ideas and chose the Subway from SoHo to Penn to LLRR to Jamaica and Air Train to JFK.

The trip took about an hour and was easy and inexpensive. It cost us about $10 each. A taxi is about $70 for the same trip, and a person we met said they took 2 hours and getting stressed about the freeway jambs.

We had two suitcases and the subway stairs and turnstiles would be an issue for the elderly or those with large cases and mobility issues.

The Subway stations are not all serviced by elevators and as first time users we encounter a few stairways. The LLRR is fully accessible with lifts at PENN station and escalators at Jamaica for transfer to the Air Train.

You can use your MTA card for the Air Train. DO NOT give the Subway rail ticket away to locals who invite travellers to give it to them saying you won’t need it any more as you leave the trains.

I would use the LLRR again. As a tourist it feels safe, it’s clean, and not being a subway you get views!
PENN station is pretty big and a little overwhelming at first but signage is excellent.
Get the app and learn the names of the Jamaica line train and you will easily follow the signs. Fellow travellers were always helpful.

As with all USA trains, no one is going to check your ticket and confirm your travel before boarding. Just find the platform, get on and go! Your ticket will be checked during the trip.

Terrible service on LIRR

By bob |

Terrible service. There are frequent delays in and out of Jamaica station, and trains are overcrowded. If you have to transfer for a train to Atlantic Terminal at Jamaica, you will likely miss your connection and have to wait a long time for another train.

Best Way to Travel Into NYC from Jamaica

By Greg M |

You can't beat the price, the time, the comfort, the convenience. We stayed in a (Days Inn) hotel in Jamaica within walking distance from the Jamaica Station (also for ease of commute to/from JFK airport using AirTrain/shuttle). This was our first use of LIRR. It was very user friendly, fast, efficient, reliable. We knew that we could safely travel into the City for a few hours, use the subway or walk to see some special sites in the vicinity of Penn Station (midtown Manhattan), then jump back on LIRR to Jamaica Station, from which we could go to JFK using AirTrain. No issues at all about traffic jams, etc. Very easy.

The best way to get from LI to NY

By Yariv |

Although it is the best way, it is not cheap. It is better (much better) to use the off peak rates if you don't have to go while it is peak rate. The service is good, when it stops in every station it could take from great neck (where i was) almost 45 minutes but the express is about 23 minutes.

LI WIne Tour - Guided by Jim

By Camille N |

This was a excellent tour. It was well organized. Jim our tour guide was so friendly and approachable. The buffet lunch was very nice. It was a pleasure to let the LIRR do the driving from Penn Station to Long Island and pleasant on the way back into the city in the evening!

I would do this tour again!

Good for Connections

By saurabh007singh |

We took Long Island Rail Road know as LIRR from Jamaica to Penn Station (Manhattan) was the most convenient way in to the heart of New York. I had a lot of bags and in our small group we had small children and senior citizens as well . The ride was comfortable and ontime . It only took 20 min from Jamaica to Penn Station (Manhattan) that too at the peak hours. I would highly recommend LIRR for who ever travelling to Manhattan from the Airport. Great service thank you.

Best Economical Way into the City

By Americanflygirl |

I was super excited that this train can take you from JFK into the city in about 30 minutes. So much easier than the subway and faster and easy to purchase tickets and navigate. For non city folk you may get a bit nervous in Penn Station as after you buy the ticket the track number did not show until approx. 10 minutes prior to boarding. This is the only way to and from the city for me now as taxi's are super expensive.

the airtrain at JFK

By Sue S |

It performed its function. It got us to our destination. It was late at night, cold and we had no idea where to go or what to do. Need better airport signs and phones that work.

Convenient from JFK Intl to Manhattan

Our first time to take this after exiting the Air Train from JFK Intl Airport. Highly recommend the LIRR. Not crowded either. This was after noon on a weekday. Love LIRR, Love Trains.

Effecient form of transportation for NYC

By Gossamer007 |

Pleasantly surprised being what a dump the NYC subway system is. This railroad was clean and efficient. Jamaica station was connected to the JFK airport AirTrain and the purchase of tickets was not too difficult for a first timer. Rode the LIRR out to the Long Island area for a tour and then that night took it into Penn Station for a NY Rangers game in Madison Sq. Garden. The Garden is right above Penn Station so you never have to go outside and worry about the criminal element in NYC. Train schedules were posted and easy to read and every train seemed to be on time. I will definitely utilize this on any return trip to NYC. The station in Jamaica had food and water available from various businesses and at decent prices for NY.

Easy Commuting

By The Five Road Trippers 🚙🎡🎢🧳 |

From paying for gas and parking, the LIRR is the way to get into Manhattan. I just wish it ran more often in the evening hours.

Loved LIRR

By Bhushan Timla |

During my last year NewYork visit with family, we stayed in Long Island. hence, we used LIRR during whole week to travel to NYC & vice-versa. We bought 1 week card, so used its service whole week from its app.

LIRR had very prompt and smooth service, and covers all prime stations in & around NewYork. We mostly used GrandCentral & Penn station, further took subway sometimes if necessary. It was lifeline for our travel to NYC during our stay, and loved it. I again bought weekly pass 2nd time as I stayed NYC two weeks and explored the city extendedly.

Besides their app, train schedules were posted in & around every station, so easy to read, plan & catch the right one. I will definitely utilize this on any return trip to NYC.

Great way to get from Penn Station to Jamica Station up to Air Train to access all terminals serving JFK

By colleen k |

Arriving at Penn Station via Amtrak pre arranged Red Cap Service (with Amtrak) will drop you off at LIRR area --Look on boards and find train track stopping at Jamica Station. When it is lit up go down the stair next to signage and get on train----If you are a senior --you can purchase your ticket to Jamica from the conductor for $5.00 off peak----Look up peak and off peak time and cost for tickets at Lirr site-- as I have only used off peak times----- Exit at Jamica --look down track looking for disabled signage and you will find an elevator ---go up level to airtrain for Jfk and you will end up in the lobby purchasing your ticket $6.00 Go thru the gates get a luggage trolly --looking above for your Terminal number(stopping at each terminal) and catch that train and you speed away to your terminal and the beginning of your trip---you are dropped off at departure check in area in the terminals! Have done this for years

Babylon Ride

By MFerrante123 |

I like taking the train to Babylon, it really beats the sitting in traffic, the schedules are very convienant

Dependable Service

By Stan G |

Usually dependable service but very crowded during the rush hours. If you are travelling to the airport or Jamaica Station "Train to the Plane" with luggage, you may have a problem.

Going to Wantagh

By Susu1411975 |

The email road takes you from Manhattan (Penn Station in the 33th) to the census-designated place of Long Island
