To do for the tropical forest but very short hike

By KPBAY |

Nice relatively easy “little hike” in the tropical forest of the Manoa Valley, at the end a waterfall (not exceptional); swimming is prohibited.
Not really necessary to have walking shoes, sneakers are enough, and we didn't find the path slippery - even though it rained in the night -.
Accessible by city bus, to take the bus back to Honolulu we walked in a neighborhood of pretty “Historic Residence” houses.

A must do excursion

By aarah l |

Manoa Falls was beautiful!! About a 30 min hike uphill. Once you reach the waterfall be careful. The waterfall area is rocky to get down to and you are really not supposed to go down into the waterfall area due to possible falling rocks. Waterfall was beautiful…the trail was also beautiful! Definitely a must do!

A Gorgeous Hike

By Scott D |

This was a really great hike. The views were so different from what we are used to seeing. Some of our pictures actually looked fake because the views were so incredible. I have never seen actual growing bamboo trees before. There were many other beautiful natural wonders along the way. It is a great hike but wear sturdy shoes. It is uneven footing most of the way. Aloha!

Oahu Rain forest hike

By Steve |

Great one mile hike to the falls. Wear shoes that won’t slip around on wet rocks. Lots of rain forest vegetation. Super treat at the parking area -fresh cold pineapple! 😋

Most pleasant walk.

By Reklaw252 |

We were fortunate that the rain this day eased off and left us with a warm mist that did not deter from a pleasant walk to the falls and do the "selfie thing". On a sunny day the easy walk will be wonderful

The Falls were a long fail

By hmearing |

This is NOT an easy trip - my wife only made it 1/3 of the way. The vegetation / scenary is great, but when I finally made it to the falls it hadn't rained, so the falls was only a trickle - we have much better falls in North Carolina. The Falls at Waimea Botanical Garden was much better

Muddy and slippery but definetely great experience

By Marta D |

Took a cab from Waikiki to the parking lot. An exciting walk with some rain at the beginning. We were wearing flipflops, no accident however, but I would not recomend this. At the end one must use the wash station to get ready to go back to civilization. After a phonecall to our cab driver, we got back easilyy to Waikiki. While waiting, had coffee at the coffee shop there, and it was nice. They also have restrooms and a giftshop and many wallpaintings to illustrate Hawaian history. It was my first encounter with rain forrest, not many (3) mosquito bites, although we did not use an insect repellant.

Do it for the exercise, not for the view.

By Alex C |

Manoa falls is an easy hike. The waterfall at the end is ruined by disrespectful tourists that disobey all the signage that says not to enter the water. Bring shoes you don’t mind getting dirty because it is muddy even in a sunny day.

Fun hike

By Theresa M |

Hike wasn’t too bad. The hard part about this hike is if you have balance issues because there’s stones & rocks the whole way. Most of the hike is in the shade. Not much water in April but still pretty.

Adventure

By Margaret S |

It was an early Sunday morning hike started at 830 and finished by 11 what a spectacular sight at the end of the hike.A really great place to take pictures and listen to the natural sounds

Great hike, close to Honolulu

By TheeJAS |

Very nice rain forest hike close to Honolulu.
We're hiking shoes or good sneakers with a tread. Lots of rocks and moisture on the trail. A hiking pole would not be out of place.
The falls were more of a slow stream in Sept but you could still see the beauty of them and the surrounding area even though they weren't flowing heavily. Beautiful views along the way too. Mostly an ascent on the way out and decent on the way back.

Lush nature

By marylinepierre |

The fall itself is not very impressive but the hike to get there is superb. Nature is lush and varied. The path is quite slippery you have to be careful. Some mosquitoes too;)

Family friendly hike

By Tasha A |

Great place to visit parking and can be a bit limited. If you’re a resident or military parking is four dollars everyone else pays full price.
Or if you could find parking in the neighborhood, it’s free just make sure you don’t park near a fire hydrant or blocking someone’s driveway .

The height to the waterfall is nice. It’s pretty straightforward. I wouldn’t say it’s handicap friendly but if you take your time and you use a walking stick or someone’s assistance, you might be able to make the hike. The hike is pet friendly but please make sure that your dogs are on a leash.

A visit to Manoa water fall

By csharma4 |

Don't miss this wonderful site if you are visiting Honolulu. It about 30 minute drive from Waikiki area hotels. There is paid limited parking ($ 7.00) and then about 45 minutes hike to the foot of the fall. Wear comfortable shoes. It is an easy walk but it get get slippery when wet and a few places are more steep. Walking with a stick should help. There are places on the way where you can sit and rest for a few minutes. Be prepared to get your shoes muddy - but there is a place near the gate to get most of the mud out of your shoes.

Beautiful Hawaii Waterfall!

By Chandra S |

Our family of five from Texas and Oklahoma visited Oahu and the Big Island for Spring Break! We did the Manoa Falls during morning hours so it would be cooler temps and still was very warm by the time we finished the hike! The hike is not too strenuous but does get the blood pumping in a few places. Our 6 and 10 year old grandsons had no trouble with this hike. It is a beautiful hike all the way to the waterfall!! The waterfall itself is Beautiful! It was flowing very good when we visited!! Would recommend this hike!!

Jungle Trek to Waterfall

By CoquitlamLarissa |

Beautiful jungle hike, landscape was awesome, slightly muddy fairly easy and lots of shade. The path was rocky and muddy but not too bad on the day i went, although there had not been any rain prior. The waterfall itself was nice but not spectacular, but the journey to was the real excitement. Well worth it easy and busy but I loved it!

Beautiful and moderately easy

By Yeraldin S |

It was a very beautiful park to go to. So green, with lots of different vegetation. The hike was long bad. My five year old was running back and forth and my parents both with bad knees did it. Make sure to not take flips flops or sandals. The best hiking shoes aren’t required but at least sneakers are because some parts were muddy and others the rocks were slippery. Bathrooms are only at the park entrance. We went mid November and the waterfall was barely a trickle. It’s posted that you can’t go into the bottom of the waterfall but there’s a path to get into it and a couple of people were in it. At the time it was only knee deep. Worth it to go. I think it took us about half the day but we took our time with the kids and parents, pictures, and lunch. For us it took about 1 hour 20 minutes one way. Worth it and a hike that pretty much everyone can do. Just take you’re time and wear good shoes.

Nice Rain Forest HIke

By Stan J |

The Manoa Falls trail is very doable for anyone in reasonable condition. It is mostly up-hill on the way in but not bad. Just watch your footing as it is uneven and can be slick. Hiking sticks or poles are a good idea. The falls is lovely. This is a great way to g et a taste of rain forest. And interesting contrast if you also do Diamond Head.

Slippery!

By whiskeysix |

Slippery rocks all the way up. Wear actual hiking footwear and bring bug spray. Good workout… the fall was not in full force when we visited yesterday.

We arrived at opening on a weekday and there was plenty of parking. Parking is $7 for tourists, $4 for residents/military. They sell bug spray at the parking attendant stand. The hike started off cool and is pretty much shaded, but it did get hot when our blood started flowing from the ascent.

We saw a lot of hot, angry toddlers and preschoolers on the trail. We also saw a lot of people not dressed properly wearing slide shoes, having a hard time. If you’re not in decent shape, the trail might be a bit difficult.

Overall, somewhat underwhelming. The arboretum on the other hand- make time to visit, it is beautiful and well cared for.

Great exercise

By bernadette m |

Great exercise within a short distance. The trail was rocky and muddy. Wear appropriate shoes. Not much water falling at this time.

Not for beginners.

By jcbowen |

It's a pretty area but using the term trail is generous. The last half is more like climbing over rocks. It's muddy and slippery. The mud literally sucked my hiking shoe off three time. I saw several people slip and fall. Aside from that, there is a sign warning about leptospirosis in the water so you don't want to get wet either. All in all, you really have to want to see a waterfall to make it worthwhile.

Slippery, but nice time in the forest

By kelseybundra |

My friend and I were looking for another hike and nature walk when we found this place. It hadn’t rained the day before but the whom trail leading up to the falls were slippery. Once we reached the falls, it said there was no swimming but people still were. My friend and I had our cameras and phones so we declined. I mainly liked being in the forest. It felt very tropical. I slipped and fell on the way down and got mud all over my backside. A lot of people helped me up though.

Hike and post hike recommendation

By dennis_c44 |

Good hike, a little slippery in spots, and 7 bucks to park. Not long but decent elevation increase. I recommend rewarding yourself with a stop at Andy's sandwiches and smoothies. Heck, eat before the hike, and grab a smoothie after. Andy's is really good.

Not a waterfall currently but still a decent hike

By Ashley L |

The waterfall was barely a trinkle because it’s dry right now. The hike is still good! It’s pretty shaded and has nice views. Takes about 45 min. Parking is $7.
I wouldn’t plan a day around it but if you’ve got some free time then sure!

Morning hike

By Meredith S |

Great walk, take hiking stick as can get very slippery, bring mozzie spray as they will carry you away, can get very muggy. take water, bring your camera lots of photos to be taken along the way.
Taxi will cost about $25.00 us both ways.

Nice hiking.

By Dors N |

Nice hiking, crowded but worth it. Free to hike no admission fee. Clean and love the sourrounding. Try it.

Must See

By Brenda M |

If you want an incredible view then this is it! The hike takes about 30 minutes up. It rocky, wet terrain up and isn’t for anyone who came walking well. The payout when you get there is breathtaking!

Great value, great scenery only minutes from Honolulu

By Dave S |

Absolutely worth seeing. The only fee was $7 to park. The parking lot is small so be prepared to wait for a space. The scenery is amazing. The trail can be treacherous because it is rocks all the way up. Because you are in a rainforest, it is muddy and very humid. You will definitely sweat but the views are worth it. We made it to the falls and it was flowing pretty good. Even if the falls are not flowing, the other scenery is worth the $7. Beware that there are very limited services. There are restrooms in a very dilapidated building and limited drink options at a pineapple stand near the entrance. All in all, this is probably the least expensive thing you will do in Hawaii.

What a hike

By Isaslbc |

So got there in the morning. Was parking though you pay $5 for it. Hike starts out easy. Now I’m a big girl so I take my time in walking trails. On this one I would stop frequently just to take pictures of this jungly surrounding. As the trail continues it does begin to get slippery. Also it does have steps. So be careful when your walking. Made it to the waterfall. Coming back down my friend was nice enough to be my walking stick to make sure I didn’t fall from how slippery it can be or going some steps because some where a little steep. Overall well worth it. I recommend going early that way it’s not so crowded.

A Fun but Challenging Hike to see a Neat Waterfall

By Amusementparkguy |

A friend and I took the hike to see this phenomenon. Though the amount of water coming down the falls was not a large amount, it is still a beautiful sight to behold! The terrain is quite rocky and steep in parts. You will definitely need to have a back pack with water on this journey. It is about a mile hike back to the falls, and the round trip will take just under two hours, depending on how long you stay at the falls. There are signs warning about not getting in the water, and they should be heeded.

Just the right hike

By Escape34338135461 |

I felt like I was walking in negative ions and it was a great climb. I used to be able to enter the pool of the waterfall, but now it is prohibited. The plants and flowers were blooming and it was so beautiful and healing that I wanted to take some home with me. I will definitely go there again when I go to Hawaii.

Parking charge even when parking closed at 6am

By Snezana B |

Even though you enter at 6 and leave by 8am, you still have to pay parking. So we left before they opened car park and I was told I had to pay full fee. Ridiculous and ripoff.
Hike is not that special, nice easy walk.

Easy cooling hike with lots of greenery

By Amanda L |

Did this solo, lots of friendly hikers made the experience better. Because of the lush greenery, it is extremely cooling, you don't get the sun and heat at all (when you exit the trail it's a much different story!)

Hike to the falls is 99% uphill. The path is gravel and was slippery when I went, going down was definitely more dangerous than going uphill because of risk of slipping.

I took about 30 min to get to the top i.e. Manoa Falls.

Views wise, it is all very green and not one of the more scenic hikes I've been on. Still enjoyed myself thoroughly being in nature, it is very tranquil and peaceful.

There is a trail extension from Manoa Falls to Aihualama Trail that takes you to an apparently beautiful lookout after 2.5 km if you fancy something more challenging - it is extremely muddy and wet here and more treacherous e.g. at some point there is water pooling in tree roots which streak across your path which you have to step across by climbing on all fours at some point, the trail is also pretty narrow and you can fall off if not careful. I did not complete the Aihualama Trail.

I washed off the mud with a high pressure hose provided by the park - just ask the Honolulu Pineapple Company people for directions to the washing station. Super thoughtful and I went home clean and happy

Good for 60+ year old!

By Kelli K |

Short (an hour) hike not too hard, but not flat either, for a 60+ year old to tackle. The waterfall is beautiful. My daughter, who has traveled to many places in the world, said it is one of the prettiest waterfalls she has seen.

Easy hike, nice waterfall

By Metallitimmy |

Nice easy walk through some beautiful bushland and nice waterfall.
As others have mentioned it can get slippery so wear decent shoes(don't need hiking boots).
$5 parking when you arrive, just head into cafe.

Hiking to the Falls

By AirSchis |

Very accessible by car from Waikiki/Honolulu. Pretty decent elevation gain though so you should wear decent footwear. If you are in decent shape and the parking lot is available you can do it one way in less than 25 minutes. The waterfall itself is dramatic given it is very steep and tall. The water flow is minimal and the pool below is small and shallow. Very beautiful forest and opportunities to walk down into the stream that runs parallel in some places. There will be many fellow hikers as it is a popular destination.
There is the Aihualama hiking trail right near the Falls that provides more elevation gain and chances to see a fantastic bamboo forest filled with unusual birds and plant life.
Definitely recommend the hike.

Great hike

By Nicole B |

A short hike with the goal of Manoa Falls. The route is suitable for toddlers and offers jungle as well as the waterfall, which can be easily seen from a small platform. Bathing below the waterfall is not welcome. The track can be slippery, so suitable footwear is necessary. Bath slippers aren't. A large parking space is available and the parking fee of $7/car is also ok. Alternatively, park and run in the streets in front. We found it too far.
This hike is a must-do on Oahu.

Small falls but nice hike

By Ayaunna B |

Apparently there was a lot of construction here recently to make the hike more doable and safe. The scenery to the falls is breathtaking. You cannot swim up underneath the falls anymore but it is still worth the trip.

Muddy, but easy hike

By tdl25 |

Make sure you wear shoes that you don't mind getting dirty. If it's just rained the trail would be really muddy and slippery. To be honest, the beginning of the trail was more breathtaking than the actual falls. You can't swim in the river because the water is slowly being infected by Leptospirosis - there are warning signs all around to tell travelers this. It's a relatively easy hike - not very steep, but the mud makes it quite slippery and there are no railings. There were a wide range of people from different ages (baby to elderly) hiking and many using walking sticks (which I highly recommend). There's a cafe and bathroom facilities before the parking area too.

A must do!!!

By Raksha V |

So we decided to hike the Monoa falls and headed out at about 9:30am. Since I am around 5 1/2 months pregnant I was quite skeptical about the hike after reading reviews here about the path being muddy. The hike was indeed muddy because of the rain two days back. But I took help of my husband and a bamboo stick to hike it up and down. I took smaller steps and paced it out. Not rush whatsoever. Except for the slope about 5 mins into the hike, rest of the hike was fairly decent.

Falls is just beautiful to look at and click away on your way up there.

An easily accessible hike that offers the right experience.

By craiginsd |

Relatively easy hike that offers pretty much everything you’d want in a hike on the islands, expect perhaps seclusion. The route can be quite busy, but recent improvements have made it a bit easier, particularly for people who refuse to wear the right shoes for what can be a slightly muddy, slippery trail. Parking was $5. Probably best to avoid the middle of the day or weekends, just to reduce the effects on your pace based on the number of hikers.

Worth the effort. Take your time.

By Bob H |

It’s a beautiful hike with plenty of tropical foliage and waterfall. Close in from Waikiki area so super close to get to if you’re staying in Honolulu. However, could get slippery when wet and some areas pretty steep on rocks if your a bit older hiker like me!

A-Mazing! Worth the hike up!

By Piscesaries |

Absolutely stunning view of the falls. The path is a bit paved, lots of rocks, some wet. Wear your Teva’s or hiking shoes… you won’t regret it! The view is spectacular but the lush rain forest on the way up was WAY more impressive than I imagined! Do it!

Worth the hike

By jkd2020 |

The hike to Manoa Falls was fairly easy, but not for everyone. The trail is rocky, muddy in spots, and slippery in places. When you are almost there, the trail gets a little steeper with concrete terrace steps I guess you could call them, but they are not stairs. Some are a few inches high and some almost two feet high. The view at the end is worth it though. Just make sure you have decent shoes and be prepared to get a little muddy at least from the ankles down. I wish we would have waited around for the couple to return after seeing the woman head off in heels and a pure white dress.

Wet but still good

By rcberumen |

Nice little hike. Seen a couple of people with broken flip flops. You never know when it is going to rain or has rained. Carry a poncho with you. We got rain all the back but still enjoyed.

Great falls to see

By AnneGagnon25 |

This was a great hike, I recommend doing I’m the morning, gets hot in the afternoon. The falls are beautiful and worth the effort to see

Too Much

By Jeffrey S |

This is very hard hike . Another thing I don’t recommend any this for anybody that does not like to hike. Also the path is not good. Lastly, I the water falls are lovely.

Manoa Fall trail CLOSED indefintely - January 21, 2021

By S.A. |

Manoa Falls, Kolowalu, and Pua Pua trails --- all in Manoa, on Oahu are CLOSED!!. You will will be given a huge monetary fine for entering. Also, if you need to be rescued the City & County of Honolulu will send you the bill for the rescue. In Fall & Winter months Manoa has a lot of rain so these trails are extremely dangerous to hike because they are muddy & full of mosquitoes. BEWARE: there are homeless people living along the trails. Posted: January 21, 2021

Unimpressed

By Vicki B |

The beginning of the trail is blacktop, but after that it is rocky and not an easy hike to the falls. When we were there in April it was really muddy too. I hiked half way and turned back, the rest of my family forged ahead and were not that impressed with the falls. It is not recommended to swim in the pool either. The scenery was breathtaking on the trail.

Manoa Falls hike was beautiful something I never could have imagined. Bring proper footwear and bug spray!

By Edie |

The reason I give this 3 out of 5 is because I didn’t know you needed bug spray. No one there told us either. We have probably 60 bites between the three of us. Also, make sure you are in tennis shoes and not sandals. We landed in Hawaii and went straight to Manoa falls with sandals on. The trail itself was beautiful, with so much greenery and awesome trees and flowers, but not as easy of a hike as people say. When we first got to the rainforest (I had no idea it was a rainforest, but love the fact that it really was! I always wanted to go to a rainforest. It was definitely beautiful, but I only got about 3/4 of the way up when it became to steep and the rain started pouring down, making the ground and rock super slippery. It started misting on our way up, but started to pour the further we went. My daughter and her boyfriend went to the top and said the waterfall wasn’t that exciting, but agree it was a nice hike except for the mosquitos. I also saw a chameleon, chickens, rooster and a wild pig!

Majestic!

By lakay |

"Majestic" for me the best word to describe when doing the trail. It is perfect for family with young children. The trail is not that hard and while doing the hike, the view is majestic that everyone must see.

My younger lady can't wait to do it again.

Great view and hike

By RogueRobD |

Awesome views, great waterfall and not to far from Waikiki. It is a hike up the mountain so bring shoes and water. The trail does get muddy and slippery and you will be covered in mud. Definitely find a good stick on the way up, you will need it on the way down.

Lush Honolulu

By BnMadven |

After settling into our hotel room in Waikiki, my partner and I grabbed an Uber to head to Manoa Falls, to continue my tendency to chase waterfalls while on vacation. The Uber drop off is right outside the restroom/cafe area (while you pay for the Uber, you skip the parking fee that you have to pay to park here), and just a little ways off to the start of the trail. It had been drizzling in this part of Honolulu, so the path was a little wet, but lush with all of the greenery. It's a slow but steady hike up to the falls themselves, but you hear the rush of the stream on your right as you get closer. It's a little less than 0.5 miles in and then back out, so budget yourself about 90 minutes overall. You'll have company on the hike there and back with groups hiking faster than you or returning from the falls, but I wouldn't say it was crowded. You hit a bottleneck at the lookout point for the falls, as everyone wants to get a picture there. Though there are signs that warn you from going further, people clambered down to the base of the falls to take a dip. The wet stones didn't make that look inviting to me, but the falls were at a decent flow and from a nice height. The hike back out took a little longer, as the path slopes downwards and was slick from the intermittent drizzle that fell. But definitely worth the effort.

Such a great hike

By Recuraz |

Beautiful rainforest topped off with an amazing waterfall. Our tour guide, Jenn, was fantastic and so knowledgeable about the area.

WOULD DEFINITELY HIKE AGAIN!

By yulissa g |

Took great pictures and really enjoyed the hike even though the water fall had very low flow. Do not recommend getting in the water; PATHOGENS 🦠!
Bring water, and BUG SPRAY!

small waterfall

By SUSAN H |

The waterfall at the end of the trail was a little bit disappointing as it was very small flowing water fall but it was very tall and had a long waterfall drop.
There are restrooms located in the gift shop and cafe at the bottom of the trail.
We arrived at the Manoa Falls trail to the waterfall by two buses from downtown Waikiki.
Firstly the number 8 bus to Ala Moana interchange (the shopping mall).
Then the number 5 bus to the base of the trail.
The bus cost $5.50 each for a all day adult ticket. Bus only runs once a hour from Ala Moana.
There is a small car park at the bottom of the trail where you pay a fee to park
Wild pigs roam the area but we did not see any when we were there
There is no admission fee to visit but it is only open to visitors on a Saturday and Sunday and every other week Monday to Friday.
Plenty of tree fruit like blue marbles on the trail and bread fruit in somebody's garden next to the bus stop.
The trail is very slippery with uneven terrain and steps all the way to the waterfall.
The waterfall itself is not very spectacular as it is a high waterfall but is very slim with a constant small flow of water.
The area itself was very picturesque with plenty of flora to see. Bamboo and flowering trees.
The area is classified as a jungle area , it was very hot and humid with no very little sunlight coming through the trees and it seemed to drizzle rain all the time making the trail muddy and very slippery.
In places it was very congested and very busy with no passing places when people are passing on the tail ,going up and down.
The waterfall at the end of the trail was not very big and a bit of a let down.

Gorgeous!!

By BaseballFan5 |

We loved the little hike up to see this waterfall. It was a little steeper and rock covered than I thought it would be, but that just made it more fun. The falls are beautiful and worth it. I am a novice hiker and did just fine.

Mango Falls Climb

By Andy S |

Active climb but no water fall at the top of a steep climb. Maybe in the rain season. Very lush but disappointed there was no water. We went Oct 22nd. So plan accordingly and check reviews before going.

Manoa Falls Trekking

By CN |

I felt like I was in the middle of the jungle, like I was in Jurassic Park. It was very humid so insect repellent is a must. It takes a lot of stamina, and by the time you reach the waterfall you're exhausted. If you're not very strong, be careful.

Great hike!

By megoff |

This was a perfect hike! Somewhere between easy and medium difficulty for me- a 34 year old out of shape but used to be athletic! It is slick. I had hiking sandals on and did just fine but I was careful. Lots of people but that’s ok. $5 parking. There is another trail up at the top that we took to make it a longer hike and that was nice. Not many people and beautiful. Definitely worth the trip. We love hiking so while this wasn’t super challenging it was still beautiful and a great way to get out and burn some calories. There is an arboretum (sp) - Lyon Arboretum- in the same area but by the time we got down from the hike we were starving so didn’t go. That may be a nice option if you want more of a leisurely stroll but still want to see the beauty. I put a pic of the map and pic of the other trail we went on- it goes for miles. We stopped and turned around after about 30 min in. We were on the trail almost two hours. Manoa falls alone up and back would probably be maybe an hour. Wear good shoes! Have fun!

Beautiful piece of paradise

By Hannah E |

One of the most beautiful places we’ve ever been. The hike was easy-moderate, so be just prepared. Wear good shoes and bring water. Stunning views, flowers, and finally the falls. Would revisit time and time again. The Lyon arboretum is right there too and absolutely gorgeous.

Fun hike close to town!

By midwestraised123 |

We spent the day exploring by riding the bus to Manoa Falls. Plan to get muddy and that there will be crowds. Some people swimming but most just taking pictures. Learned afterwards that the botanical gardens are highly recommended.

January Hike

By Alexandria S |

This hike truly was beautiful and falls were great - major jurassic park vibes. However I would not do this hike again for the following reasons:

Tourists. There were SO many people. We were in a single file line having to stop often. When we finally made it to the falls EVERYONE needed a photo of course and no one was abiding by the signs to stay behind. This made it impossible to get a photo without people in it. Very frustrating.

Muddy. The hike was incredibly slippery - like nearly impossible to do without falling. It rained the whole time, which I don't mind at all it was the slippery mud. I did fall and had to throw out my tennis shoes.

It was January and I get that the hike is muddy, but wow. Just the people and the mud made the hike much less enjoyable.

Lush landscape

By Dave T |

great hike. A bit rocky so wear some shoes your sturdy in, and it can be muddy. When we went there were zero falls (dry as a bone) but the hike is still lovely, especially the first 1/2 mile with eye-popping lush scenery

Lush, Peaceful, and Worth the Mud

By Jonathan Phan |

Our family loved hiking the Manoa Falls Trail—it’s a short but rewarding walk through a vibrant rainforest that feels straight out of a movie set. The path is mostly shaded and surrounded by towering bamboo, tropical plants, and birdsong, making it feel like a true escape from the city. It had rained earlier, so the trail was muddy in parts, but that only added to the adventure. The waterfall at the end was flowing beautifully and made for a perfect photo spot. We took our time, enjoyed the scenery, and appreciated how accessible the trail was for all ages. Just wear good shoes and bring bug spray—you’ll be glad you did.

Wonderful nature!

By Scheril W |

Hema was our tour guide through Karma Tour Hawaii and she was the best. Her wonderful personality and knowledge really made the hike wonderful! We had a small party my husband, my 8 year old son and an another couple. We had so much fun and the vegetation and the falls were perfect. The hike is not for folks with knee or back problems but otherwise not a bad hike. Would suggest going in the morning less crowded and not as hot. If you are lucky enough to get Hema it will be cherry on top!

Pretty falls with a fun hike. A walking stick would be helpful.

By CFFSydney |

The sign at the entrance says 'easy' walk. It's not an 'easy' walk, although it's also not particularly strenuous. The walk starts on a wide gravel path, but soon changes to a muddy, and sometimes slippery incline. There was quite a number of people on the track and at times, a walking stick / hiking pole would have been helpful to ensure you didn't slip over. Most of the track is in shade.
The falls at the end were pretty. There wasn't a lot of water flow, but we hadn't had any rain all week, so not surprising.
All in all we had fun and enjoyed the walk. It took us 1 hour 40 minutes including about 10 minutes at the waterfall. This was partly due to the number of people on the track.
Wear appropriate walking shoes and take water to drink.

Lovely Hike

By Y A |

We truly enjoy everything about this hike, short, sweet, full of beautiful nature and breathtaking. It’s a must see if you are in Honolulu.

Nice hike among plants and birds with a waterfall at the end.

By PatCincinnati |

Good hike. Not too long. lots to see along the way. like walking on a rocky river bed with some slick clay - like soil covering the rocks so you need to take care as you walk. All ages can do this. If you are a geocacher, there are a few caches along the way. Parking could be a challenge but we were lucky to get a spot. Would recommend for a nice morning stroll.

Beautiful hike

By Ms. V |

Despite the waterfall being more of a trickle by August, we had a great time hiking this trail. Some tips:

1. Go early - We started hiking at 8am and finished by 10am (we spent a long time at the falls). When we started, the trail was relatively empty, and there were only a couple other small groups around us. When we finished around 10am, it was getting pretty crowded and not fun.

2. Expect rain - It's a rain forest. Note that they sell ponchos for $2.50 at the entrance as well as bug spray. Buy or bring both. The mosquitos are vicious.

3. Wear actual hiking boots - The hike up is ok, but hiking back down slippery rocks will be downright dangerous without proper footwear. Additionally, parts of the path are just mud, and most of it is loose rocks/gravel. We really appreciated the traction from our hiking boots

4. Bring water - The heat and humidity will get to even the fittest.

5. Consider a walking stick - Wish we had one given how slippery it was after the rain.

Closed!!!

Do NOT go in July 2024. They closed the trail with no notice. It's not on their website. There is no sign. They still you when you get to the gate and refuse entrance. We were with a whole line of cars getting turned around. I'd like to thank the management for making my lose and hour and a half of my vacation and $70 in waster Uber fares.

Pretty but busy

By Cassandra B |

The walk to Manoa Falls took about 1 hour up and 1 hour back. The scenery along the way was stunning but be prepared for some step inclines over rocky/loose pebbles. The ground was muddy when we were there making it harder for grip especially on the way back down. The path way and vantage spots for photos were very busy often with lines of people waiting to take the perfect picture. Once at the top due to not being a rainy season the waterfall was running but not as majestic as I was hoping or expecting after the walk. There were people of all ages completing the walk but if your fitness isn't of a decent standard expect to struggle with some of the walk. I do recommend if you get the chance to complete it as the views on the way to the top are quite pretty, feels like you're in a prehistoric world at points.

Lovely falls

By Highzone |

Difficult hike to go up to see the falls as it was rocky and a bit slippery in some wet parts. It was worth the effort to see the lovely falls!

Beautiful Views!

By Madaline Y |

The Manoa Falls trail was so much fun to do with my husband on our honeymoon! I will say it was a lot harder than what I had read online and from other reviews- we are frequent hikers and thought this was harder than its "moderate" listing. However, it was SO WORTH IT!!! The views are stunning throughout the entire trail. We will do it again next time we are back, but we will be better prepared! lol!

Also - you do have to pay for parking!

My 70th birthday gift from my children but I'll be 70th next year. I thank God for my children. My kid's are the greatest!!

Love the shark's tank, the food, I loved everything best trip ever the waterfall was fantastic. When to the dole love it!

Rude parking attendant

Rude attendant at parking. Disregarded completely our question and stated they ha e not presence online when we asked the parking fee discrepancy. Parking is $7 and not $5 as it is stated on Google.
Waterfall and trail were great.

Beautiful waterfall at the top of a muddy hike

By Alicia B |

We loved this shaded hike up to the beautiful waterfall. The hike is dirt/mud/rocks so wear sneakers or secure sandals. There is a place to wash off your shoes after the hike, and I recommend bringing a change of shoes. The hike can be steep at times and you will walk up and back down the same trail. The trees are so lush, and there are plenty of places to stop along the way and take pictures of the rain forest. While there were signs that discouraged going into the waterfall, there were some people who ventured into the falls anyways. FYI - you won’t be able to take a stroller on this hike. Enjoy!

Amazing nature

By Merle |

The hike is nice in the shade and really brings that forrest hike feel.

I did the hike while having our little one on me and that for someone that rarely hikes.

The waterfall it self is nice but will be more pretty when it would have rained more prior. But that will make the hike more slippery going up and down.

Reccomend using the bamboo sticks you can find in the beginning if you like some help with your grip and balance. Please put them back though for the next person to enjoy!

Excellent, beautiful hike if you have good balance!

By FWFamilyof4 |

A beautiful, lush, jungley hike up to a spectacular waterfall and pool. They’ve done a wonderful job making the trail more accessible, with lots of stairs, and even carpet over muddy portions. Even so, someone with poor footing or balance won’t like this - it is a hike. Everyone else, you’ll probably love it!

A mildly difficult Hike with great waterfall

By Ryan |

All the reviews I read on this hike said it was easy. I found it more difficult than Diamond Head Hike. It was a constant incline with loose rocks most of the way. I was sure I was going to twist an ancle, but luckily didnt. You will definately need good shoes for this Hike. The waterfall at the end is awesome and worth it though

A must do experience

By dani2017415 |

The views were beautiful! I’m glad we went through the rainforest. Definitely wear tennis shoes because it can be slippery

Relaxing hike with unbelievable surroundings

By Dorene B |

This is a must do hike. One of the free things to do, small parking fee. It is a gorgeous hike to a stunning waterfall. Trail is mostly shaded and can be a bit muddy in places.

Nice easy hike.

By Chanokporn L |

It is an easy hike. But between July 2019 and September 2019, the park will be closed an alternate week day for widening the trail at the very last section of the trail to make 2 way traffic safer. It is a short easy hike and beautiful.

manoa falls

By Jonathan C. |

Beautiful hike through the Oahu rainforest. Slightly rocky trails. The waterfall was heavier in the afternoon after some light tropical storms, though the trail can get quite muddy. Very shaded from flora.

Beautiful green foliage

By GreggMS |

This was a beautiful hike. A couple of pointers.

Wear hiking shoes with good traction. The hike is slippery and the footing is not always good. Take your time walking up and walking down and enjoy the stunning green foliage. Looks like something out of Jurassic Park. The mosquitos come out so apply plenty of insect repellant. The waterfall itself is nothing special. The hike is the best part.

Beautiful hike

By Stephanie M |

Originally I booked this hike with a tour company but the more I researched. I discovered it was an easy hike we could navigate ourselves. So I canceled and we drove ourselves. It was just a $5 parking fee and was maybe a 20 minute drive from Waikiki. It was really easy to do this and I liked not going with a tour so we were able to take our time and really enjoy the scenery. Also there’s a gift shop/restroom/ food stand right across the parking lot. So if you want to grab some beverages before you you head out on your hike. I totally recommend saving your money and doing the hike yourself.

Manoa Falls- a worthwhile hike!

By Livehappy123 |

This hike is so worth the trip! Manoa Falls is located approximately 5 miles northeast of downtown Honolulu. It is a 1.6-mile round-trip trail through a rainforest to the 150-foot waterfall. Truly a hidden gem. If you need to get away from the typical tourist attractions and be with nature, put on your hiking shoes and head out to the lush rainforest scenery where Jurassic Park and LOST were filmed!

The hike is mild to moderate with some steeper areas. I am not a hiker, but in good health, so it was doable. I am also a planner, so we researched & read plenty of reviews before we decided to go. We saw people of all ages, families, young adults, and children enjoying the trail. Our hike started on July 4th at 8: am, and the weather forecast called for slight rain. The trickling rain helped us cool off, not the kind of rain that makes you feel cold.

Parking: There is a parking lot on the lower level and a second lot on the upper level around the corner. The fee to park was $7 (they take credit cards). Located next to the parking lot is a building with a restroom and a small eatery that sells snacks and drinks if needed.

What we brought: a backpack filled with light snacks, water, sunglasses, a hat, bug spray, extra socks, and a poncho. In the car, we packed a towel, an extra t-shirt, and flip-flops to change into after the hike.

What we wore: shorts, t-shirt, shoes that had good traction (hiking sandals, tennis shoes). Please do not wear flip-flops, chunky sandals, or high heels. We witnessed some ladies wearing chunky 2.5-inch heels for the hike...they looked miserable! When it rains, the rocks become extra slippery, and you tend to kick up lots of mud and debris. On our way down the trail, we witnessed a young family pushing their baby in a stroller...we advised them it would be difficult holding a baby and other kids while dragging a stroller up the very rocky trail. They were grateful to know this information.

That sums up our experience at Manoa Falls. It was a nice break to get away from the hectic crowds. Go pack your backpack and head out to this majestic area!

beauty of the forest and worth the falls at the end

By Kurt T |

The beauty of the forest and being able to get into the pool by the falls was great. Not that challenging and worth the $5 entry fee. One of the prettiest hikes we went on....not for the views of the ocean but for nature....was cool since most of the hike is covered by nature. Wow!

Manoa Falls

By Eddy |

Bus#5 from Ala Moana Centre, walk 15 mins to the Falls parking lot entrance. The trail to the Falls a little bit slope with small loose rocks and muddy(if rain). Bring insects repellent because it’s like a rain forest. About 40-45 mins one way depends on your speed. We were disappointed because the Falls were dry. It’s free anyway(Waimea Falls dry too but charges $25/adult).

Beautiful short hike

By Achi H |

Beautiful place. Visited during a rainy day, good to have been able to buy shoes suited for mud and a poncho in the shop before the trail. Hike was lovely despite the pouring rain. Sun came up just when I got back down :-)

Slippery Rocks, wear the right shoes!

By Rstraubh |

The rocks are very slippery because it's always raining/wet there in the jungle. So, it's important to wear the right shoes otherwise you could hurt yourself. It's a lovely hike and lots of people, but not too hard of a hike.

Lovely falls and a nice hike

By jdtivoli |

The hike to the falls was easy with lots of nature to see. The falls were nice and ends with a pretty pool that you can swim in.

Good hike to combine with Diamond Head

By A A |

Did this hike the same morning as Diamond Head. Home is to a tall waterfall. It is muddy and much of the hike is over stones. You need sneakers or preferably hiking shoes for this. Leave the sandals, slides and flip flops at home. You can’t get very close to the waterfall. The views are engaging. The hiking is not technical. Spent less than 1.5 hours here. Pineapple smoothie stand at the trailhead.

Beautiful hike, but very slippery

By Beth R |

Beautiful hike! Be careful you will get very muddy and wear bug spray. Was crowded so go early. Slippery in spots, walk carefully. Walked around the gardens on the way down, was a nice day.

It's a neat waterfall park

By Kirk SF |

This attraction requires a little hiking to get to and from, but it's worth the walk, and is spectacular.

Great short hike!

By Sleepy eyes |

Came with my 4.5 yr old and 4 month baby around 8:30 am on a Thursday and it was a perfect hike for us. Parking was available - $5/car and we used bug spray and got no mosquito bites! We were lucky that it hadn’t rained and wasn’t too muddy. Plenty of shade and beautiful foliage. I grabbed a massive bamboo stalk on the way down so would still recommend a walking stick for the unsteady. Only annoying thing was there was a couple that went in the forbidden area at the bottom of the falls to pose and hang out and basically ruined everyone else shot of the waterfall. At this time not much a fall but still beautiful. Convenient there are bathrooms and shaved ice nearby as well!

Great hike!

By FrahmKim |

Easy level hike with beautiful views. Perfect for a quick outdoor adventure. Pack good hiking shoes and be prepared for muddy conditions.

Low flow

By Melissasavage69 |

Very nice area. Path was clean and well kept. if you have a walking stick available - take it - it was very helpful in the areas of loose gravel. There hadn't been much rain when we visited, so the waterfall wasn't large but still impressive

Great hike with a great view

By Trisha M |

Such a beautiful hike and waterfall definitely worth doing anyone with tennis shoes should be able to hike it but it does get muddy and buggy so bring your bug spray

Amazing waterfall! Family friendly hike!

By Mel B |

I read everything about the mud, so yes, be prepared to have dirty feet! They do have hoses at the end of the trail to hose down your shoes/feet, so bring a pair of flip flops or something for the trip home. Manoa Falls was gorgeous! Everything is so green, so perfect! Before you head out, swing by the cafe and hear the story about how the place used to be a bird sanctuary, in the 90's something happened and the birds got out, but they've stayed and made it their home! They'll tell you what to look for while you're hiking! It rained a bit the day we went, but it was still worth it to see the beautiful waterfall!

lovely but crowded

By pvaultingirl |

Don't expect a quiet hike. Expect a nice hike to a beautiful falls with lots of people. Some folks disrespect the land and other hikers with their smoking which can spoil it

Great hike. More about the experience than the destination

By 331jenna |

Beautiful hike path surrounded by stunning greenery. A different (and easier) experience than Diamond Head. Very much enjoyed it, though the waterfall was more of a trickle.

The path is much wider than the one at Diamond Head (and with a lot fewer people). Incline is so much easier than Diamond Head (and Makapuu Lighthouse) but the path is made up of loose rocks that can sometimes be damp. Hike can be done at any time of day due to copious shade.

Overall, much easier to go up and down than Diamond Head with plenty of areas to rest either way. Remember to bring bug repellent. (Some is sold at parking lot entrance)

There are also restrooms in the parking lot. Convenient, if not clean.

I came up from Waikiki using public transportation. Manoa Falls is the terminus stop for bus #5.

Waterfall

Make sure you have in some good walking shoes. Facility was clean and welcoming. Staff was friendly.

Short but muddy hike

By jetsetforlife |

Went on this hike expecting a magnificent waterfall because of the reviews. It so happened that on the day we were there, it hadn’t rained sufficiently and the water volume was too low. We saw a teeny waterfall that was more of a trickle. I’m sure that on other days when it’s wet enough, it’ll be bigger, but not as big as some of the other falls on the island. Otherwise, it’s a fun, short hike that is relatively accessible. Everyone walking out was covered in mud at LEAST on the legs so be prepared to get muddy - bring suitable shoes maybe. It’s impossible to do it without getting a little dirty.

Self guided tour

By Victoria G |

No need to pay for this hike, one you get there you pay $5 for parking if you are driving, if not just start walking up the trail! It’s free! The local bus also does a drop off super close to the trail, you just walk maybe a quarter of a mile. At the entrance, they have little store with snacks and a gift shop, clean restrooms, indoor treat area. Very nice place. Take water, and safe shoes. It can be very slippery! Nice hike, you can get in the water when you reach the falls...enjoy!

Great trail

By Eve A |

It was a great experience at Manoa Falls trail. The hike is very easy but muddy, so make sure to wear good shoes to avoid slipping. The waterfall is beautiful, although you can't get very close to it. Also, be sure to bring mosquito repellent as there are many."

Hard core in a monsoon

By Rod Masson |

Started up trail and it started raining hard. Bring shoes that are washable or u don’t care about. Make sure they have good grip for heavy mud and slippery conditions. Make sure and grab a good stick at end of the rock path. Was very fun and challenging in the heavy rain. Turned into a compete mud bath.

Not for elderly or little kids in heavy rain.

Unexpected afternoon fill in activity

By nmcintyre32 |

This was a great stop for us. My husband and I weren't sure how we would fair hiking in Hawaii. So this was a good test hike for us We had gone to Pearl Harbor earlier, had lunch and were looking for something to do before our flight back to Maui. We just happened to be driving around and I saw a sign for visiting Manoa Falls. I convinced my husband to go there. Little did I know that it was a mile hike up to the falls. Fortunately we weren't wearing flip flops. However, I would suggest to anyone planning to do this hike to wear your hiking shoes, or at the very least some good traction water shoes. The hike up was pretty crowded with others hiking up. We found some walking limbs that people who had come down left for the use of others headed up. Thank goodness, that was so helpful for less experienced "hikers". I would say that it is dangerous to do this hike in flip flops. But we saw a lot of people headed up doing just that. Also, mosquito spray is probably good to have available. However, evidently the mosquitoes didn't like our Texas "blood" because we didn't have any issues with them. The fall itself wasn't that spectacular at the time we went. Perhaps there just hadn't been enough rain. But we really enjoyed the walk up and felt quite accomplished after doing the hike. It definitely let us know how much we could handle regarding hiking. The two teens said that this was one of the most memorable things we did.

Gorgeous Easy Trail

By EJsMommy31 |

Manoa Falls Trail leading to one of several waterfalls, was easy enough for all ages that can move. The location was absolutely jaw dropping gorgeous. This was our first adventure in Hawaii and it really set the bar high for the rest of our trip. If coming to Oahu, hiking the rainforest is a MUST! Pick a trail and enjoy the beauty. My tip would be to stop and soak it all in, so much foliage, flowers, streams, birds. Our party consisted of 12 people ranging from 8 yrs old to 60 and we saw toddlers as well as elderly people walking the trail with help of a parent or a walking stick. It does get muddy and slippery so just watch your step. Can be done in under an hour round way, with stops.

nice little scenic jaunt

By timcgunn |

The hike up and back is relatively easy, the trail is in excellent shape. The mornings and early afternoons seem to be the best times due to almost daily afternoon showers. The waterfall view is nice.

Beautiful falls in the rain forest

By Mark B |

The walk up to Manoa Falls takes you through some beautiful rain forest past areas used in movies such as Jurassic Park. The track is well defined and generally well maintained. however because it rains on most days it can get muddy and slippery. It is also fairly steep in some parts so good footwear is recommended.
The falls are beautiful and offer good photo opportunities. You cannot reach the actual plunge pool below the falls without ignoring signs telling you not to proceed beyong a particular point. However while we were there many people did go to the water's edge.
If you enjoy bush walking and waterfalls this is a good trip for you.

One of the safer hikes in Hawaii

By JustGo |

A beautiful hike - the vegetation is amazing and the waterfall a lovely prize for getting to the top! The trail was well maintained, but still slippery and uneven. Most of the hike was shaded, but very humid. It took us about an hour. Please note: wear bug spray, prepare to get muddy and wear shoes with good traction. I also used trekking poles on the way down - which helped steady this old girl.

Easy hike to a pretty waterfall

By Renae0118 |

This is a relatively easy hike to a pretty waterfall. I recommend going early as the trail gets crowded. Also note, there is a $5 parking fee. Wear shoes you don't mind getting muddy as the trails are wet. The scenery is beautiful.

Not worth the time or effort.

By Renata G |

Not worth the hike. The trail is not a trail but a wet, muddy ankle breaker of a hike. If you like climbing mountainous terrain for 45 minutes, getting to the top to see a smaller trickle of water than your garden hose then this might be for you. Rock slide a few years ago took out the pond at the bottom so no pool or lake there anymore. All closed up at the top now so just a small vantage point. There would be better things to spend half a day on than this. Take my advice and go to the beach instead.

Pretty views

By Amy00070 |

A bit muddy, slightly strenuous at parts, very humid… But beautiful views. Approximately an hour to a little over an hour round-trip At a decent pace.

Nice hike (but can be muddy) with a scenic waterfall at the end

By thetravelorganizer |

Scenes from Jurassic Park and Lost were shot along this 1.6-mile trail through a rainforest just a few miles from Waikiki. The reward at the end of the trail is a 150-foot waterfall.

Manoa Falls trail CLOSED indefintely - January 23, 2021

By S.G. |

Manoa Falls, Pu'u Pia, and Kolowalu trails --- all in Manoa, on Oahu are CLOSED!!. Boulders and rockslides!! You will be given a huge monetary fine for entering. Also, if you need to be rescued the City & County of Honolulu will give you the bill for the rescue. In the Fall & Winter months Manoa has a lot of rain so these trails are extremely dangerous to hike because they are muddy & full of mosquitoes. BEWARE: there are homeless people living along the trails. The area has many rental units and a high rate of burglaries. Vehicles are often broken into. Thieves know this is a tourist area. Jeeps and Ford Mustangs are targets since they are often vehicles driven by tourists. Suggest you hike other trails on Oahu. Posted: January 23, 2021

Beautiful Jungle Hike

By Steve |

Beautiful Hike and totally different from hikes we’ve ever done on the mainland. a
0.8 miles one way. The sign at the trailhead says two hours but we did it in about an hour not going very fast either. Trail was muddy the entire way which would be likely given the daily rainfall. There are places where the mud is pretty slippery and people have fallen—not severely and just get muddy. Well marked trail and kept up as much as is possible given how many people hike it. We went Dec 29th and is pretty busy—saw 100+ people on the trail.
Parking at top is $5 and worth the cost as hose in the parking lot to wash off with. Otherwise you have to park on the streets below and adds at least 1/2 mile to the hike.

It is super humid (we come from Utah and 20% humidity so we were sweating all the way up and back. Take water. Not recommended to swim or wade in pool at top due to risk of Leptospirosis. You don’t want that.

Manoa Falls

By Safari649767 |

The Manoa Falls are very close to downtown Honolulu and can be accessed at the end of Manoa Road. There is just a $5 fee to park. The hiking is pleasant, little elevation as you walk to the base and may feel as if you are on the set of Jurassic Park. After about an hour hike, the breathtaking waterfall is at the end that stand 150 feet tall!
This is for adventure, outgoing people, who wants to explore more than cities and beaches.

breathtaking but hard walk up

By jas0719 |

I loved visiting this place but I didn't make it up to the top. I got three quarters up or exactly where you can see the waterfall from a distance. That was enough for me. Take care! Bring a walking stick. Most of all, enjoy every moment! You only live once. I was grateful to meet a mother and daughter who allowed me to walk up with them. Everyone was friendly and making sure that you felt safe walking up and down.

Hiking Poles or Walking Sticks are Highly Recommended!

By Suzy R |

The hike was beautiful! The trail was very muddy, slippery, and uneven. My hiking poles made the trek so much easier and manageable. The lush foliage was beautiful. Do apply mosquito repellent before starting out. The mosquitoes were the size of small birds 😬😬. Definitely worth going.

beautiful, scenic hike

By Ume |

This was a beautiful, scenic hike. I walk a lot, but I’m not the most fit person in the world. This hike was a pretty easy level hike. It took us a little less than 30 minutes to hike up, and 20 minutes to hike back down (that included multiple stops for pictures). It was raining on this particular day and it was quite humid, but it kept the crowds at bay. We used rideshare to get to manoa falls and did not have to pay any fee. This was one of the most beautiful hikes I’ve done. The pictures do not do this place justice. Totally doable, I enjoyed strolling through this lush, nature rainforest. Breathtaking!

Shaded hike with great view

By Henry J |

I enjoyed the hike and the vegetation. With so much greenery, the air also feels cleaner as well. IMHO, Manoa Falls is so so. Be aware of the hike coming down since the path has a lot of small rocks and pebbles so easy to slip. The slope of the trails and small rocks coming down makes it a bit dangerous as well, so hike slower when coming down.

The hike was 99% shaded so it can be hiked throughout the day.

Great hike with a fantastic result

By Jason T |

Great falls, but in December it wasn’t much more than a trickle. Even with all the rain we got that week. It was wet on the way up, but not overly so as we were in sandals and didn’t get dirty by stepping carefully. I would recommend hiking shoes but depending on the day they are not really needed if you are careful. The shop at the bottom sells water shoes if you would rather buy those and use them on the way up.
The hike is challenging, but not overly so. Maximum grade is 23% so you might have to take your time if you are not great with grades. Be careful on the way down as it is easy to slip and fall. It would be nice to take water with you as it is a hot and strenuous workout.
It does get busy, so early morning would be best but if you don’t mind waiting at the top for your selfie, people are usually nice to get out of the way when they are done. Unfortunately many were ignoring the signs that say not to cross the barrier and were trying to swim in the water at the bottom of the falls. Please observe the signs.
There is a foot truck at the beginning of the hike that serves pineapple smoothies and shave ice that looked good, but the line was too long for us to take part.
The total hike is at least 3km (1.2 miles) round trip.
Enjoy!

Pure Hawaiian Mountain Vegetation

By Dana P |

If you like nature and a light hiking challenge, you'll find it here. The hike is pretty much all uphill getting to the falls, and the terrain is very rocky and uneven. It had rained before I went so a little extra caution on the slippery rocks was necessary. Don't count on the destination to "wow" you. It's a fairly tall falls, but more like a small stream coming down the mountainside. The pool at the base is off limits because of a disease having been found there. I couldn't say how popular the hike is on a regular basis, but it was quite crowded the day I went.

Really muddy

By Brent R |

Hiked up to the falls. It's very muddy. My wife stepped out of her hiking shoe once. The falls are really nice. Be care on both the way up and back. We saw people slip on the muddy rocks

Just like a movie Jungle set

By Pattersonmanor |

To me the best part of the trip was the first 1/3 of the trip.

The very beginning is flat and open but there is such lush variety of plants that it seems like an oasis as the creek gurgles through the plants. The trees are tall with vines and flowers growing up like a canvas.

There are also a few interesting tree formations. One area the tree spreads sideways like spaghetti and allows for some interesting pictures, further up the tree forms an arch that you walk through.

Without stops it takes 25-30 minutes. The second half of the trip you are under canopy cover. The trail was wet even though it didn't rain that day. The trail is somewhat maintained but not groomed. Decent shoes are still recommended.

There was a path that went beyond the water fall, probably somewhere above the falls but it didn't looked very used and would =be for more adventurous people.

There is a small gift shop and bathrooms at the entrance where you can buy candy and drinks.

Parking is $ 5 but space is limited. We arrives at 5 pm and were able to park.

Great hike, go early to beat the crowds

By wdl |

After an unsuccessful attempt to go to Diamond Head, we decided to head further east to Manoa Falls for our morning hike. It is not too far from Waikiki, and if you don't get there too late, you may be able to find parking (which is not the case of Diamond Head).

The hike is moderate and a very good exercise. It can a bit muddy if it rained the day before, but that is the risk of most trails, especially those leading to waterfall. There was not much water on the fall the day we went, but we were there less for the fall and more for the hike. There is some elevation gain, but I consider the hike easy to moderate.

Near the parking lot, there are some trailers selling refreshments and "dole whip" or something that they advertise as dole whip (dole whip is a pineapple soft-serve, which is sold in the Dole Plantation in the North Shore). There is also a restaurant where you can get some refreshments and use the bathroom, and obviously buy souvenirs.

One thing to notice is that, if you have stamina, you can hike all the way up to the Nuanu Pali lookout, which is also accessible via freeway, and that is exactly where we were headed after the falls.

It has really an enjoyable morning for all my family.

Average,nothing super extraordinary

By Patricia |

Based on reviews and being advertised as number 1 waterfall hike in Oahu , we were expecting a more decent impressive sized waterfall. Hike there was not very difficult, but the rocky gravel trail that was meant to make it easier for ppl , was actually making things more slippery. It was crowded , and honestly , the best part of it was enjoying the vegetation along the way . The fall was nothing impressive , neither in height or in width. It’s one of those things where you need to get it off your bucket list . I don’t thing we would want to go back another time if visiting the islands.

Hiking To Manoa Falls

By Nikko Gandia |

I hiked this & many other trails on 09/11 during my first visit to Hawai'i & posted a vlog! Search "Nikko Gandia Travels" on YT. This is the hike I definitely felt the "Hawai'i" vibe due to the various types of foliage and banyan trees. If you're getting in the water, watch your step. It's a rocky area and the height level changes, I found it best to squat/get low and inch my way to the waterfall. The main trail can be slick/muddy so watch out for that as well.

Fun but slippery trail.

By TwoTexasTravellers |

I hiked Manoa falls with my family during a trip to Oahu. This hike was fun but there are a few things to note before you attempt it. Parking was $5 and entrance to the falls is free. We arrived at around 11am and it was pretty crowded. This hike is really pretty through the rainforest. I've seen a lot of reviews of this hike as being easy but there are a few things to know before you go because it can be a little dicey in places. It took us about 1 hour round trip and we only spent about 5-10 minutes at the falls because it was really crowded. I was amazed at all of the people who ignored the warning signs to take their "Instagram" photos closer to the waterfall. You can't swim in the water because of bacteria. Don't be fooled by the flat path a the start of the hike. It gets steeper, muddier and slipperier. There are lots of steps and stairs but there are some places where you have to maneuver around the rocks and tree roots on your way up. Coming down, this hike was very slippery so you have to be very careful. A couple of people behind me slipped and fell on the way down. Be sure to wear shoes with treads and take water with you because it's hot and humid. There are water hoses at the bottom to rinse off your shoes. There is also a snack shop and restrooms at the start of the trail. Overall it was a fun hike to a beautiful spot but I was surprised that this hike gets rated "easy". When I think of and easy hike I assume a flat path and this one was not.

Scenic, Well Maintained Trail, Beautiful Falls

By Rik T |

The falls were certainly worth the hike. It's only a 1.6 mile hike to the falls, but if you're carrying a small child, walking a dog, or if you don't like a bit of a climb on a rocky and muddy trail, it might be too much. I did see older people and people carrying infants doing it so just judge for yourself by looking at photos of the trail. The trail varies quite a lot as to what kind of terrain you're walking on.

Along the trail you'll see some pretty crazy trees, streams, a lush tropical forest, and probably a rain shower. The falls are quite nice and the viewing area is pretty close to the falls. There were signs warning to not go right down into the water at the base of the falls but many were doing it anyway.

You can take the number 5 bus to the falls (about 20 minutes from downtown Honolulu) and walk up the trail for free. Parking a car costs less than $10.

There is a building at the base of the trail with washrooms and a place where you can get some food and snacks and drinks. I highly recommend the pineapple whip inside a hollowed out pineapple. It's kinda like sorbet. There's also a snack truck just a tiny bit further up the hill.

Beautiful

By tammy s |

easy hike to see a great waterfall. It was a rainy day which made for a beautiful waterfall but a muddy walk up. Steady traffic on the trail but not so much that it hindered pace. Pineapple smoothies available for purchase at the trail head was a nice treat when we finished.

Beautiful scenery

By MissL219 |

We took a taxi to the area nearby and then from there we hiked up to the top of the falls. The difference in the climate here and in Waikiki which was only about 20 minutes away was so contrasting.
The falls were really pretty and we even got to see a dart frog and gecko as well!

Great hike!

By Veronica H |

This was a really nice hike for me and my girls (ages 9 and 10). It was not difficult. We saw very interesting plants and trees. The waterfall is very nice but it is best viewed after a day of rain because otherwise the falls looks very thin.

Hike other Oahu trails!!

By S.G. |

Manoa Falls, Kolowalu, and Pu'u Pia are not worth hiking. Better to hike other trails on Oahu. These trails have boulders, rocks falling & mudslides. Full of centipedes & mosquitoes. If you need to be rescued the City & County of Honolulu will give you the bill for the rescue! BEWARE: there are homeless people living along the trails who leave excretement & trash. The areas have many rental units and a high rate of burglaries. Vehicles are often broken into. Today's date: Oct. 25, 2021

Beautiful waterfall

By Tracy L |

I'm not a hiker, this was wet, muddy, buggy, humid, but fun! Make sure to have bug spray, a walking stick is something I recommend, water and your camera! This starts out as an easy walk, but gradually gets a little tricky, make sure to wear gym shoes or hiking boots, this is very slick! Jen was our guide and she was amazing! We learned so much about Hawaii on this tour. At the end of this hike was so worth seeing this beautiful waterfall fed by just the rain.

Manoa Falls

By Michelle G |

Beautiful hike. Not too far from Waikiki, all fitness levels and a pretty waterfall at the end. Other trails stem off of this trail if you are up for extending your time out. Bring bug spray and water and make sure you are in proper footwear. There are nice rock steps but, some uneven ground. It is in the mountainside and trees so it can get wet. Bring a poncho if that is something that concerns you.

A beautiful waterfall and scenic hike

By tonyrnyc |

A great hike to a lovely waterfall. It had rained the week before so the waterfall was impressive. The hike up was scenic and not very difficult. Well worth a visit.

Great muddy hike!

By travelgirlie123 |

Family of 4 (kids 10 and 12). We hiked here in mid-afternoon in late June after really big rain two days prior. Sprayed ourselves w/bug spray upon arrival. Trail was not too busy on this particular day and time. I was a little concerned about the muddy aspect, but knew the waterfall should be flowing nicely (and it was). We did a lot of hiking while in Hawaii. We really enjoyed this one. Easy to get to, relatively easy hike, and beautiful surroundings. I would hike it again, and would recommend it to anyone who is in relatively good shape and ages 7 and up (not for anyone who has trouble walking, as you could lose your footing, especially when muddy). We brought our old sneakers mainly for this hike. No one fell, but a guy with a walking stick splashed me as we passed by. We washed off w/ the provided water hose at the end of the hike. This was a fun adventure for our family!

Not what I expected

By Angie |

The waterfall in August was tiny for the hike. Not recommended for young children unless you want to carry them. Not too steep.. I'm not a hiker but figured I was going to see a magnificent waterfall so I was disappointed. But I loved the plant life
Need decent shoes you don't care will get muddy

Not impressed

By 23chrisa |

It is a wide path and would be very easy to follow for all ages. It is however VERY slippery especially coming back down the mountain. I gave this a four star because the first view of the waterfall was gorgeous, but my kids and husband were not impressed with the actual top of the waterfall. They said it was about the amount of water as if it were coming out of a garden hose. I don’t consider this an easy hike simply because it is slippery. But it is doable length and elevation-wise for all levels.

Not as easy

By Curiosity301922 |

Not as easy at it looks. The walkway has small to medium size stones that are loose. Some parts of the walkway is muddy. Very scenic . Many trees etc around. Final 10 mins is an uphill climb. The waterfall is high but has a small amount of water coming down it. Basin area is small. Make sure you wear proper hiking shoes or sneakers. If it rained recently the trail will be a bit challenging. Do not take a stroller. Not worth it. Hike is not that easy and has an uphill climb. Hike takes about 25 to 45 mins depending on how fast you walk and if it rained. Parking $7 multiple parking lots. Relatively close to Honolulu.

Beautiful hike

By Georgia_traveler_77 |

Beautiful hike to a small waterfall. It was cool under the canopy, but bring water and good shoes. The trail is slippery and muddy. Definitely no wheelchairs or ECVs. Go early if possible, the hike was amazingly serene and peaceful.

Great tropical rainforest hike in nature

By Dan I |

Long hike through tropical rainforest to get to a beautiful waterfall. The hike up is moderately difficult, but there are many spectacular views on the way. The first ~1/3 or so has some truly excellent views, without being too much up hill climbing, so still worth it even if you aren't able to make it to the top for the waterfall.

Pretty Waterfall

By Shelbs21 |

This was a good hike to a neat waterfall. It had t rained much lately so it wasn’t as large as a waterfall as others but it was still beautiful. Remember this is a tourist spot so there is a lot of people.
The hike up is a good incline but not bad.
The views up to the waterfall were beautiful! It was cool to see where some famous movies were filmed.
We used the Go City pass to pay for this so it was worth it with that.

Amazing from Beginning to End

By ronniea525 |

It was in December when we first hiked this trail. In this review, I would like to offer the readers some constructive advice and provide some insight before hiking up to Manoa Falls. I would not recommend this hike to anyone who is frail or have difficulty navigating through rocky terrain.

First, make sure the trail is open and not closed due to flash floods. You will pay $5 for parking and 2 lots are available. Rainbow's End Snack Shop is conveniently located next to the parking lots where there is also a bathroom. Do use the bathroom before the hike since there are no bathrooms along the trail to Manoa Falls. Bring some water with you since there are no water fountains on the trail.

Don't expect the trail to be dry! The trail could be extremely muddy. I wore my WHITE running shoes; big mistake! Best to wear beach shoes or sandals that strap onto your feet. Use old shoes if you can. There is a small area to wash your muddy shoes after the hike at the 1st parking lot but one might find a long line since there is only one hose for everyone to use.

Don't be in a hurry. I've seen people slip along the way. The terrain is also sometimes rocky and narrow so be very careful. I recommend a walking stick if you have one. Expect your hike to take at least an hour. This includes taking pictures and not rushing it. Lastly, have fun! It's truly a great experience being one with nature and you won't be disappointed. It's truly worth the hike and you will be amazed.

pretty

By Shawntal L |

THis was a hour hike to see this waterfall. If you drive your own car it is only $5 for parking and no other fees. much chepaer to go by yourself

Trail is much harder than advertised.

By Dusty V |

This review isn’t so much about the falls as the trail to get there. The falls are rewarding if you make it there safely. The three inch rock is very rough to hike on. The rock is loose and some of the hills are very challenging because of this. It should not be rated as an easy trail but in the moderate range. There very many who stopped and turned back. There was a lot of grumbling from passers by. I made it to the top but for my wife who is in average shape gave up, and asked me to finish the hike.

What a beautiful site and a water fall

By GeORgeziLLA |

Such a beauty. Natural so soothing. Its do able get there early ad pick up some bambos sticks of find any and hike. Definitely wear shorts and possibly a tank top and bring a mosquitoes repellent. Its important to have a repellent. They do sell them at the parking lot but expensive.

Beautiful secnery inside

By Kitty L |

My family loved Manoa Falls hike! We did it with a 3 year old and a not so active 8 year old and it was a very easy hike for both of them. I wore Tevas and the kids wore water shoes and did fine. We were told the fall is more active on days when it rains, and it had just gotten done raining when we did it. The waterfall wasn’t the most impressive part, but the scenery inside is breathtaking. My kids love it and felt like it resembled Te Fiti from Moana. I would do it again and again. It was a much easier hike for the kids than Diamond Head and we enjoyed the nature more on this one.

Beautiful hike

By Rach Dee |

Nice hike, beautiful scenery. We went there around 9am and so it was not so hot. It rained a bit. Some areas are 35 to 40 degree incline terrain, have to walk slow. Its going to be muddy. On the 2nd floor of the snack store, there's a faucet you can use to remove mud from shoes. We used good grade water shoes.

Glad we didn't miss this one...

By JoshAndMonique |

We were a bit worried about the falls not being worth it based on some of the reviews, especially in comparison to what we saw on the Big Island. Beautiful hike, water shoes are perfect and they help you avoid ruining your normal shoes. Several people commented on how they wished they had thought of that. A bit muddy but if you are careful, you won't muddy your clothes. The falls at the end were well worth the effort.

Decent hike

By Wilson L |

This trail was super easy and super fun to walk. It's free but you do have to pay for parking if you're bringing a vehicle. It's about 30 min up 30 min down at most, but at the top there are other trails you can get to.

An adventure!

By Lei-Gau |

Really pretty waterfall. The trail is quite steep and the terrain is rocky and uneven. It’s especially so after it’s been raining. It’s important to wear sneakers or hiking shoes!

Nice Waterfall

By PrincessLea96 |

A nice easy hike (if you're an avid hiker) that ends with a beautiful waterfall. The lush jungle was lovely to walk through and once you get to the waterfall it is very pretty. If it has been raining be aware that the trail will be very muddy and slippery so either wear proper hiking shoes or something you don't mind getting muddy. If you have your own car it costs $7 to park.

Nice Hike

By Dana B |

The hike was pretty easy, but super muddy. Some spots were pretty slippery so you should definitely were good hiking shoes. It was a bit crowded, but overall it’s a nice hike.

Trails

By JFWhite |

Recently came here for a view of the waterfalls. Unfortunately they were kinda dry due to the time of year. Friendly staff members and trail was well upkept.

Misleading information

By Andii W. |

The hike is very beautiful and well worth the trip, however THE WATERFALL AND POOL ARE NOT OPEN FOR SWIMMING! IT IS IN A RESTRICTED AREA! WHICH CAN RESULT IN FINES FROM DOCARE OFFICERS IF CAUGHT IN RESTRICTED AREAS.
Let's please try keeping people accurately informed and avoid future confusion!

Not worth the hike

By Patrick M |

Pretty disappointing hike, most exciting part was getting back down to grab shaved ice. Probably a 20-30 minute hike all for a mostly disappointing view.

Short and steep (sweet)...

By kevan j |

We hiked this trail on a whim and found it to be very nice indeed! It's a short drive from downtown Honolulu up into the mountains. It costs $7 to park but well worth it. Check out all the wild chickens and the magnificent banyan trees at the parking lot. The hike is a little less than 2 miles total and ends at a very beautiful waterfall. The trail itself is very nice. It is a bit rocky, and it is a bit steep most of the way, but the surrounding flora are spectacular. All sorts of rain-forest type trees and plants, lots of bamboo plants, lots of palms and banyan trees. I really enjoyed this hike! Definitely recommend.

Short medium level hike

By Reeen |

We usually just walk over to hike this trail. Seems like it’s getting busier every year. Lots of buses and tourists, so early morning or late afternoon is the best time to go. The hike is relatively easy but toward the end the steps are getting higher. It is also getting very slippery during rainy season. The view of the surrounding is great. No view of the skyline but all the greenery are beautiful. Just always make sure to check on the Oahu hiking site since many times the trail is closed for maintenance or safety issue,

Rocky Trail

By Tena D |

Very rocky treacherous trail. Large rocks need to be addressed in order to walk. Trail is steep in places. Would not recommend for people who do not exercise. Bring your water too. Insects were not bad at all. At the end of the trail the reward is beautiful.

Mānoa Falls Hike - Not Easy

By Regina M |

This hike is mostly uphill on wet, muddy, slippery rocks. Takes about 2 hours because you have to carefully watch your footing so you don’t fall or break an ankle. Wear hiking boots. Saw children fall and hurt themselves and this hike is totally NOT for the elderly. Do not believe the locals or most of the reviews which say this is an easy hike on a paved path. Waterfalls not that spectacular. I live near Niagara Falls, that is spectacular. The stream trickling through the lush foliage is very pretty however.

magic place to be

By Topgun2211 |

It takes around half an hour to get up there and the way is getting more and more difficult the closer you come to the target - but in the end you are standing below the Falls and this is a magic moment.
The nature along the trail is awesome. Kind of Jurassic Park.
We visited this placce already two times and will do it probably again.

Rainforest runway

By Eileen D |

The path upward is extremely muddy and rocky. Plan on ruining any white sneakers! The falls look a lot larger than they really are, because of your perspective from the lookout. It's worth the hike for the rain forest trees and plants. Young children may get tired.

Beautiful hike

By Robert K |

Highly recommend! Unlike all the other hikes. Love the lush shaded greenery for most of the hike. Felt like you were in rain forest. The crown jewel is the massive waterfall t the top which is gorgeous!

Really enjoyed this

By Russell3939 |

Came during the rain and it was still fun. The walk to the top takes about 25 minutes. The views in the forest were amazing. There wasn’t a ton of water coming off the top, but the hike up was amazing. There is a shop at the bottom that sells rain ponchos if you need. Parking is $7 I believe. They also have a pineapple stand selling smoothies and whip.

Wonderful family hike

By Kelly H |

This was a great family adventure. Easy parking and a great little store and bathrooms with all the essentials needed. It was slippery on the way down so go slow and steady

Possibly most underwhelming hike of O'ahu

By 808 Reviewer |

This is one of the most underwhelming hikes in the entire state and only recommended if you have children who cannot hike harder trails. Highly recommend skipping if you have limited time in the isles.

A great walk.

By Daniel Barnett |

We decided to head here one morning and see the falls. We caught the public bus there. The up hill walk isn't as demanding as one would think, however it can get quite slippery under foot so were trainers or hiking shoes for this one. (not flip flops).
the falls look great and worth a photo at the bottom of them. If you have time make sure you factor in about 2hours total for this.

Beautiful Rainforest and Falls

By tnworkingmom |

Manoa Falls has gorgeous scenery and is neat to see places where Jurassic Park and Lost were filmed. We hiked there on an extremely crowded Monday at 11 a.m. Due to heavy rains a week ago, the entire trail was ankle deep mud. However, the beauty of the Falls was worth it. We did have to hose off in parking lot.

Stunning

By Tony B |

Once again I used TA to plan an E-bike ride and hike to Manoa falls.
Found a great place for bike rentals ( see review) and they helped us map our way to avoid the worst of the traffic ( tip: wear your helmet, no earbuds, obey traffic signs, stay off sidewalks!!)
We arrived after a leisurely ride checking out the awesome architecture of the houses on the route. We hit the main entry where they charge cars to park but….Not Bikes!! The trailhead is easy to spot and it wasn’t crowded.
Full disclosure: It’s humid and can get hot in the sunny spots, it’s straight up (for me lol), it is rocky and slippery in spots ( wear good hiking shoes: no flips, crocs etc.)
Hints:
Take time to enjoy the incredible plant life- massive trees, deep bush and the creek sounds below. Don’t just mob to the falls.
Take plenty of water (liter per person)
I forgot my cooling towel and really missed it !!
If you have older knees wear your patellar brace and use a hiking stick- people often leave homemade ones at the sign
Don’t swim in the pool!!! Bacteria is drained there from above w/ the constant rain. Had to tell a couple of foreigners there as I had read about it in TA
Go slow on the way down especially if it has rained
Otherwise enjoy this natural beauty
Aloha

Definitely a must do on Oahu!

By Kelsey D |

Definitely check it out! Go early to beat the crowd. It is an easy hike and the falls are beautiful. It rained most the hike but it didn’t change the experience at all! Bring bug spray.

Beware!

By Karebear38 |

Just did this hike today with my family of five and parts of it wERE SCARY! It HAD just rained so maybe that added to the danger but we slipped and slid all the way up AND all the way down ... There are NUMEROUS areas with insane drop offs and I was a nervous wreck for my boys 9 and 11. The waterfall itself was gorgeous and monstrous and I’m thankful I got to experience it ... HOWEVER... I would not have done this with my children had I known How rough and steep the terrain was ... only cost is the $5 to park and a lovely little shave ice stand near the parking lot ... just know you will be hiking at your own risk

Manoa falls

By Tommy P |

Inget vatten i fallet, men en fin promenad dit i alla fall.

No water in the waterfall, but a nice walk there.

Hard hike, beautiful lush greenery

By Mikayla P |

I’m not sure why the reviews don’t reflect the difficult nature of this hike. It is unpaved with muddy parts and a gradual incline. Not for beginners. Take lots of rests and don’t try to bring a stroller or young children. Waterfall was just ok. My favorite part was actually the plants and flowers at the visitor’s center. It’s out of the way and a hike to get up there at the entrance but worth it for beautiful scenery and photos.

Waterfall

By wwsd2010 |

The bus stops you at the bottom of the falls. Walk up and hike up. Not too strenuous or difficult. The path is clearly marked. Rain can make the path very slippery. For those driving there is a small cost to park. Bring water along with you.

Gorgeous jungle hike to Manoa Falls

By Dreamer23449028264 |

Ok so Manoa Falls - as in the actual
waterfall - *is* lovely. But honestly the hike to the falls is absolutely incredible. If you go, be prepared to be awed by trees that tower above you, arching over and creating lovely tunnels and shading the trail (which some of the other popular trails on the island do not have). The plants and trees along the way were awesome, and you can easily see why movies like the original Jurassic Park were filmed in this area. The land feels ancient and wild in the best of ways. The falls change depending upon rainfall. When we went, the water flow was thin but beautiful. Be aware that it is recommended that you *not swim* due to possible infection with a disease (although if the water is flowing and you have no open cuts or wounds, many people will decide to still get in). The trail is fairly easy, although there are loose rocks and it can be a bit muddy. Overall this is a beautiful and easy hike that’s end goal of the waterfall is just as worth seeing as the entire trail itself.

Lovely hike

By Alex_19751 |

Lovely gentle hike, awesome scenery worth a visit to the trail to the waterfall.its a maybe 30-40mins hike from the visitor centre to the waterfall.I would visit here again and recommend it to friends and family who visited Waihiki

Fun and easy

By Rolando H |

It’s was a nice easy hike. The area is so beautiful and filled with lots of trees. Make sure you have mosquito repellant. Only thing that disappointed was the falls as the it didn’t rain and there wasn’t enough water for the waterfall. But can’t control that. Otherwise a nice calming hike.

OMG a must do!

By lmlizzio |

Manoa Falls is just a beautiful hike all together! Its actually not a bad hike and very do able for everyone. When we were hiking we saw all ages from 3-60+. It is muddy so wear comfy and good gripping shoes. Its less than a mile up, and maybe a 30 minute hike depending on your pace. I loved the rainforest and thought is was awesome. Parking is $5, and they have a gift shop and a snack bar inside. This is a must do when going to Hawaii!

Rocky & muddy but worth it

By mbkr312 |

Great hike for families but it is rocky and muddy . The waterfall is beautiful and you hear the flowing water throughout the hike, it gets steep towards the end. Bring mosquito repellant, and sandals to change into so you can clean your shoes with the hose near upper parking lot.

Lush and Pretty Trail

By CdnTravellerYYC |

We hiked this trail at the end of March. We took an Uber from Waikiki to the trail. It was approximately $15. A bit more expensive than the bus, but it was much more convenient. The base of the trail was SO beautiful. Lush and verdant. One could definitely see how filmmakers are inspired by this area. The trail itself was not terribly challenging. (Diamond Head was harder to me.) As there is a lot of foliage, the trial was a bit hot and humid. (Bring some water.) And busy! The trail, as stated by others, consisted of rocks. It was ok going up, but was a bit tricky on descent. My husband has weak ankles and he definitely took his time going down. The waterfall itself was merely a trickle. Not terribly exciting. The highlight of the trip was the base of the trail!
There are bathrooms at the drop off area. Did not use them, so I cannot comment on their condition.
Overall, it was a good and pretty short hike. Not too sure that we would do it again, though.

Easily Navigated and Interesting Tourist Destination

By SeaMariner22 |

The Manoa Valley/Manoa Falls experience is a popular destination on Oahu. It basically consists of a botanical garden with many different plant species well labeled, some re-creations of ancient Hawaiian life with exhibits, and the waterfall at the end. As of this April 2023 writing, we paid $25 each for admission - you can pay $10 for a ride to the falls but that skips the gardens and exhibits.

It’s an easy walk from the admission gate to the falls, it probably gets a bit messy during rain. Food and restrooms are available in the park as you would expect in any popular tourist attraction. There are changing areas if you want to swim with the waterfall.

The waterfall marks the end of the park - included in the admission fee is rental of a mandatory life vest for those wanting to swim at the base of the waterfall. When my wife and I visited, the water looked quite muddy and I didn’t feel the need to float around with muddy water falling on me. I don’t know if there are showers outside the waterfall.

The park is easily navigated, the foliage is interesting, and I liked looking at some examples of ancient Hawaiian life. It’s worth enjoying, but I didn’t feel it was exceptional. I would give it 3.5 “stars” if I could…

Waterfall was dry in Jan 2025

By Bill D |

The hike was fairly easy although the path is mainly small to mid sized rocks which are slippery in places. Foliage was interesting if you’re not from the Island. Sadly there was no waterfall. Just a rock face and a tiny trickle. Had we known we would have done something else for the couple hours it took.

Overrated

By MJ_ontheBAY |

A trek to Mānoa Falls isn’t a bad way to spend a morning, but I’d say its reviews are quite inflated and it might be one of the most overrated hikes on the island. My theory is that this hike’s popularity is a marriage of convenience based on its accessibility and close proximity to the college campus and Waikiki where the bulk of visitors stay. There are other hikes with much better views and slightly less crowds if you’re willing to commute further out.

An easy ~1.5 mile hike with slight incline will get you to the very tall waterfall, which is a nice sight and perhaps photo-worthy. That’s about all this hike has to offer. In reality, you’ll spend most of your time wandering through a humid, buggy rainforest and dodging groups of people through narrow bends in most likely muddy conditions. If you go in dry months like July or August, it likely won’t be as mushy. On the flip side, doing this hike in January after a week of persistent rain would be a mess and you’ll need a bath afterwards.

A couple of tips, wear good shoes for this one. Hiking shoes/boots with added ankle support are ideal, but running shoes with a decent tred would get you by too. Don’t be one of those clowns that tries to do this in sandals (the beach is in the other direction ;) ) If you want a swimmable waterfall, this isn’t it. Head up to Waimea Valley instead. Granted, you may see a couple folks in the water, but this is in defiance of the states rules. Risk of falling rocks/debris and reported medical issues/infection traced back to leptospirosis make this pretty unsafe.

If you’re strapped for time and want to squeeze in a hike during your trip, this is an alright pick since it’s not hard to get to and won’t even burn a half day. Otherwise, take the time to venture out to something much better like Diamond Head, Makapu’u Point, Hanauma Bay Ridge or Kaena Point.

Manoa Trek

By Ashley Kelly |

My husband and I hiked to Manoa Falls during our honeymoon. Be aware for novice hikers or more "flat land" people like us Florida kids. The hike was more strenuous for us than we anticipated. Again that was for my husband and I, to each their own. I definitely recommend good sturdy shoes as the path is over rocks, muddy slopes etc While we were hiking it also began raining which made the hike a bit tricky too. However try to enjoy the scenery, its beautiful! I'm glad we visited Manoa Falls!

Less Strenous Hike Compartively

By Lengtan67 |

As its route is covered with trees, it was a much cooler hike as compared to Koko Head despite I was also there about noon.

However, the ground can be pretty slippery after rain and some smaller stones can caused missteps.

Can be accessed by Bus 5, and not a long walk to its entrance.

Nice hike

By Emily |

A truly tropical forest; you see all the lushes and greens along your way. It's quite muddy on certain areas, so make sure you wear proper shoes (like running shoes), and also make sure you spray some mosquito repellent. The hike was about 1.5 hours round trip. You get to see the beautiful Manoa falls; tons of people taking pictures, so find a nice spot for yourself.

Jungle-y hike with less crowds, falls are tall but not super flow-y

By Sightseer779040 |

I found this hike online while searching for relatively short hikes that are not too tough and have good views. We arrived around 7am and there was someone manning the parking lot. It is $7 to park. There were not many people there when we arrived and therefore the trail was empty which was nice compared to something like diamond head in which there was a lot of other people. This hike is very “jungle-y”. Therefore there is no need to do this as a sunrise hike because you cannot see much except for thick jungle. There are some really cool scenic moments as you hike up. As others mentioned in previous reviews it is rocky and muddy so be prepared to have your shoes a little muddy. Also there are certain points in the trail where you notice the bugs. I was smart and did my research to bring bug spray with me but I was not smart and forgot to put it on! Please remember to put on your bug spray before leaving your car or put it in your bag because I came away with a few bug bites. It took about 35 minutes to get to the end where the falls are. The falls are more grandeur in the fact that it is a tall and high waterfall as opposed to the flow, because as others have mentioned the flow is a trickle. However we still found the hike worth it for the scenery on the way up and the height of the waterfall. It also took us about 35 minutes on the way down and we took our time but we did not take breaks. There was only one steep section and the rest was doable. It had clearly rained the night before and it was extremely windy in the days that we were there so we noticed that there were some fallen trees blocking the path so I hope that was recent and not left for a while considering the $7 charge to park. Bring your water bottle with you as well as it is humid. Overall this hike is very easy to get to from Waikiki (it is only about a 20 minute drive) so it is a nice way to experience some more scenery with less crowds.

Beautiful Falls and scenery

By John R |

We were told that this was an easy walk. Unfortunately it was extremely muddy, slippery and a hard climb. Here are some good pieces of advice. Get there before 8 am because the crowds are really heavy. Wear good hiking boots, clothes that can get muddy and lather up with a really good mosquito repellent with "Deet". Even so they bit me right thru my heavy socks so cover everything with repellent. Carry lots of water and a snack. This is only less than 2 miles round trip but once you get to the top it's nice to just sit and watch the falls. Some people went in swimming. The restaurant "Tree Top" at the Trail Head was closed when we were there so call in advance to insure they are open including the Trail. They are working on the trail so until further notice the trail is only open Friday, Sat. & Sunday. Go when you know there has been no rain for at least a week, if that is ever possible, or go fully prepared to be in a real slippery muddy mess when you are done. Worth the trip though.

Easy 30min hike, rocky but worth it.

By maria t |

Went November 2023 with a group of 6 girls. Hike is rocky so make sure to wear shoes with grip. Unfortunately it was a drought so the water fall was just a trickle. But would’ve been worth it!! Only above 30min hike.

Amazing scenery

By Robin G |

Wear good shoes with a grip (rain and mud and climbing make it slick) - might want to take a cheap poncho - scenery is amazing and highly recommend this hike

Beautiful tropical view

By Jay |

The trail is short but definitely not easy. It is uphill and slippery.

If you have very elderly parents, just let them stay in the beginning of the trail. There is a wide open area right after the container gate and you would enjoy the tropical view which I think is the high light of this trip not the fall itself. After that, the trail becomes narrow down so crowded, muddy so slippery, humid so mosquit- heavenly

No picnic area. Bring bug repellent and a handkerchief( you will sweat a lot). It was too short we didn’t drink any water.

There is a pineapple desert shop right next to the entrance. Pineapple smoothie was about $10 .50 and ice cream was$6. Next time I go back, I will have pineapple only. They gave three pieces as a deco on my smoothie and it was very fresh and sweet.

We took bus #5 to get there. Very convenient.

Beautiful walk through rainforest but not an easy hike

By amk |

This is almost one mile uphill to get to the falls. The trail is rocky, muddy, and slippery in places making it more of a moderate hike than an easy hike. You pay to park, but entry to the trail is free. The trail is a beautiful hike through the rainforest. There are signs warning not to swim in the water. There were quite a few people on this trail.

Great to see

By Ardrey L |

The hike will get your shoes muddy. But it was worth seeing the waterfall. My first time seeing a waterfall and it was really cool to see. Walking through the forest felt like being in the movie Journey 2. It was really fun, but make sure you bring water.

Just beautiful

By Renie E |

We enjoyed every step we took here. Although the water was too cold for us to get in, it was absolutely beautiful. I'd definitely put this on the top places to see.

Beautiful Hike! Feels like Avatar, Jurassic Park!

By calizona1976 |

The hike itself is pretty spectacular, before even getting up to the waterfalls. Heed the warnings about wearing sturdy shoes, and be prepared for them to be covered in mud! It is a rain forest!!! It had rained on us every time we have been there. Some of the higher up parts get slippery and can have flowing water on it depending on the rain. It is fairly easy though. Take your time if you are a beginner hiker. The waterfall itself is tall but not wide. It is pretty, but i like the valleys and treetop views better. Just something you dont see many other places. Highly recommend! You pay for parking ($5), there is a little store with essentials you might need (bug spray!), and bathrooms. The parking lot has a hose where you can rinse off your shoes when you are done too.

Beautiful

By Ingrid |

Beautiful hike! The Falls are currently at a trickle but the scenery is worth the trip. $5 parking at the trail head with a gift shop and restrooms. It’s a muddy trail so hiking shoes would be preferred. I wore flip flops and made it to the top and back but it was extremely difficult. Personally don’t recommend the hike for kids under 5.

Nice...

By janine b |

Wonderful little hike without any major challenges - sturdy shoes are a must - you can easily park from the parking lot on site, fee $7, there are also toilets at the entrance in a visitor center.
You can easily integrate it into your trip to Oahu and if it has rained beforehand, it is twice as worthwhile. However, you are not allowed/should not swim in the lake in front of it because of the bacteria.

Manoa Falls are only open for the weekends!

By Michał G |

Fellow travelers, I'm just posting this review as a warning. From 1st October 2019 the trail is only open for weekends. See attached image.

Great hike for beginners who want a taste of Oahu’s greenery, near to the city

By Wikumj |

A great hike for beginners who are only visiting Honolulu for a short time, as this doesn’t take long and is close to Honolulu city. This is a jungle trek with a chance to experience the lush green forests of Oahu while still on a relatively easy path (note it is uphill, but still would be doable by most ages and abilities). The mile long hike took us about 90 mins in total (there and back). Do douse yourself in plenty of mosquito repellant as we got bitten a couple of times. The greenery along the way are as good as the waterfall at the end. For the more adventurous, bring swimwear for a dip in the pool under the waterfall.

Good muddy fun!

By Evan S |

Talk about micro-climates! It was hot and sunny in Wakiki... but wet and drizzling at Manoa Falls. It was so GREEN, my wife thought our pictures were fake! We had a great hike, and came back full of mud! The uber driver was MOST appreciative as we took off our shoes before getting in to his car.... and then washed our shoes off at the beach.

Nice waterfall .

By raketak |

It is easy walk to Manoa in comparison to Lulumahu falls. They have great pineapple ice cream and pineapple juice near the parking lot.

Easy hike

By Mimi |

We managed to do this with our 6 yo and 12 yo in a short amount of time. You don’t need a tour guide- relatively easy to do. We did go in the morning after it just rained and were advised NOT to attempt the hike (by a concerned local we had encountered). He was concerned that the trail was going to be too slippery and about the current winds knocking down tree branches. We encountered both slippery roads and windy falling branches but made it thru with no problems. It wasn’t that crowded when we went too so we were able to get lots of beautiful pictures of the scenery and the waterfall.

Beautiful and easy hike close to town (Honolulu)

By Edam4 |

Recently reopened following repairs and improvements, this is very worthwhile to do; a hike all visitors should take. The waterfall itself is great, and the variety of flora along the trail is enhances the hike. For those more adventurous, it is easy to access a network of trails just off the this route.

Great rainy day activity, bring hiking boots.

By Laura P |

Many people say the waterfall is a trickle but it must be the rainy season because it poured lol day and the falls we’re rushing and gorgeous. Very slippery & muddy. The parking lot attendant sells ponchos & bug spray although I didn’t need the bug spray as the rain kept the bugs away. Use the rest room before you leave and take water. Easier hike than diamond head but still quite a work out. I read one review that said the entrance was the best and I agree other than the waterfall the first 1/4 of the hike was by far my favorite. Highly recommend.

It is a hike to the waterfall but worth it.

By Andy C |

This is a place to get your shoes muddy and dirty. For non-experienced hikers definately bring a walking stick. My wife and my 5 yo daughter was thrilled to see the waterfall in its glory. It is recommended not to swim in the water or you will get sick.
The hike would take about an hour for us. We stayed for about 20 minutes to take pictures and enjoy the scenery. One the way down the hike was easier but still recommend caution the area get's pretty wet.

Water Drip

By Bree Nicole |

This was my our family’s first hike, my daughter wanted to see a waterfall so we decided to leave Waikiki for the day and venture out. The hike wasn’t easy for us first timers but the scenery heading up was worthy of any motion picture centered around the rainforest. The hike does get steep and slippery. Proper shoes, (a walking stick if necessary) bug spray and bottled water will go a long way. To our dismay the waterfall was more like a water drip. I believe I sweated more than the actual waterfall.

Muddy and steep

By Jackinbama |

We went about 2/3 of the way up this trail but turned back when it got both muddier and steeper. Don’t know if if is worth it because we turned back. For sure it would be better if it had not had a recent rainfall. Not for anyone with poor footwear or health issues.

Great views!

By JAMES W |

Beautiful to look at, nice exercise. It did rain on us walking up there and back but we had ponchos and didn't mind at all.

The lush forest at the start of the walk was the best bit

By eve w |

We didn't really think it was worth the trek even though it was an easy walk for us. When I saw people struggling to get there with walking sticks etc., I didn't think the reward at the end was worth the effort and it's muddy and slippery. It hadn't rained much that week so the waterfall wasn't very substantial, it's just very tall.
We didn't even consider walking the extra bit down to the base of the waterfall because it looked extremely dangerous to get down there and there are signs warning against it (people go down anyway).
The lush forest at the start of the walk was the best bit.

Nice Hike, Pretty Falls

By Karmin |

It was slippery and muddy in a few places, both my daughter and I fell once on the way down, but most surfaces had rock mixed in with the soil and it helped you to keep your traction, there were lots of people on the trail, we went at 10 am, not possible to get a picture of the falls without other people in your way, but beautiful and a nice easy hike! There is a water cleaning station in the parking lot for you to wash up with after the hike, I wouldn't wear your nice new sneakers or flip flops, although I saw people with both!

Not worth the walk

By Grizwald Vacationers |

During our circle island tour, we stopped and walked 1.5 miles to get to Manoa Falls. I'm 62 and my husband is 70, and Monoa Falls was not worth the long hot walk. It was small, unimpressive, and we were told there was bacteria in the water so it was not really safe to swim.

Waterfall magic

By Calv |

Make time for this amazing experience, well worth the hike to go into the cool water for a great photo op.

2 hr hike there and back. Muddy but beautiful

By Leslie M |

Congested trail. Narrow but The Valley at the beginning and the waterfall are worth the trek.

Wear suitable footwear. Trail is muddy.

Amazing scenery

By Catalin O |

We took this hike early morning. $5 for parking. Pretty crowded and the trail was at the end a bit slippery. We were hiking through the rain forest which was cool. The crowds made it very slow going. Thee waterfall that day was barely splashing into the pool. Amazing scenery. Worth going.

Great hike, pretty

By Adeara |

The hike is mostly uphill and I went on a day that rained all morning so it ended up being VERY muddy. I would recommend shoes you don't mind getting dirty and bring some water as the hike can be 20 - 40 minutes depending on how slowly you move. Very pretty though and worth a visit.

Gorgeous!

By happy4travel |

We loved Manoa Falls, so beautiful! This was the first time we saw the Falls and it was amazing! Hawaii is the best of the best! Hawaiian life for me 🏄‍♀️🏖😍!!

Mud, crowds, and low water make Manoa Falls not worth it

By Ken D |

We started this hike with high hopes that were soon dashed. First, you have to pay $5 for parking or walk nearly a mile to get to the trailhead. Maybe it was just the day we were there, but it was very crowded and the trail was very, very slippery. You are hiking through the rain forest which is neat. But we saw several hikers slip and two of our group of five fell or slipped as well. Plus the crowds made it very slow going. And after all that frustration making it up the hill, the waterfall that day was barely splashing into the pool. We saw people with canes struggling their way up and two year olds set the pace while traffic backed up behind. Might be a better experience earlier in the day or if the falls are in full flow.

Fabulous Hike to the Falls through a Bamboo Forrest

By DisneyRose |

We took this hike as part of a Disney adventure and loved it! The fals are lovely, the path a bit muddy but the unique bamboo forest was the best.(It’s currently closed for renovations.)

Parking/bathrooms need work but nice waterfall!

By Juliesg1119 |

Nice hike but not as easy as some the reviews say it is. We were all sweating and you definitely have to watch your steps more here with the loose rocks and them being damp and muddy. Also going back down you really have to be careful not to slip. On another note the bathrooms in this area are horribly dirty and OLD! The parking areas also have some huge potholes! I was surprised they don’t use some of the revenues for the parking fees to fox up the restrooms and parking areas. Overall beautiful views once you see the waterfall.

Must do in Oahu

By Sarah B |

Beautiful rainforest hike, mud isn’t a bother with good shoes, saw very young to very old happily on the trail. Waterfall is a nice treat at the end of an already worth the effort moderate hike.

Manoa Falls

By Juan G |

It's closed due to Boulder falling mitigation
The road it's open till de University of Hawaii arboretum

Slippery hike

By JupiterFLMom |

The hike to Manoa Falls was beautiful, but it was a bit steep and very slippery and a bit muddy. It felt more than the .8 miles one way. Definitely wear sneakers. We saw some people carrying small children which seemed a bit difficult with the slippery terrain. The falls themselves were not glamours but at least they were a "goal" for the end of a hike. We got there early (7:45 a.m.) and parked in the lot next to the Treetop Restaurant. There were only a few other cars. When we left the lot around 10:15/10:30, it was packed with people waiting for openings and a lot more people arriving, so we suggest go early.

Beautiful but not that easy

By DonandMaro |

We went to see the falls. We Ubered from our hotel and the driver said what an easy walk it is and very flat. I disagree with her. The walk is slippery and rocky and there are a lot of uphill portions. We were there on a Sunday afternoon and there were a lot of people going up and down. Families with small children, older adults both of which were going slowly and then young teens and couples that seemed to be in a race to get up to the falls. Many points, it is hard for two people to squeeze by. The scenery was amazing, the flowers and plants were beautiful. The waterfall did not have that much water going over it and there is not a whole lot of room around the falls.....some big rocks to sit on, but not much else to do.

Beautiful beyond compare

By Jovin F |

What a wonderful water fall I have been here for my first time as I have been recommended to my friend Patrick, This is one of the best water fall I have seen in my life time.
High recommend

Beautiful trail

By JOSHARC |

The trail is beautiful, but do not expect a roaring waterfall. It's more of a dribble (unless it has rained). I would say the trail is moderate in difficulty.

Hiking

By RCherry55 |

Be prepared ! (Shoes) Find or bring a walking stick. Being experienced in hiking we were prepared but we seen other who were not and turned around before seeing the fall’s. The day we went the trail was muddy and slippery, a few spots were hazardous because of the mud. Wear cloths and good tennis shoes that you don’t mind getting mud on !! It is a very beautiful trail. GO EARLY, it does get very busy !! I recommend having a bottle of water, you will be climbing up the mountain and it can get humid, there are a couple of places to rest if needed. Bring your camera and selfie stick, there are several good places with beautiful views over the valley. We loved it and would go again.

Spectacular scenery.

By Paul R |

Beautiful hike through the rainforest. We hired mopeds and rode to the Falls. Track was a little muddy so be prepared to get your shoes dirty. Take some water. Worth the effort. The scenery is spectacular.

Visit the Falls.

By Rheno H |

We Ubered and didn't use a guide or tourist service to visit the falls. You don't really need one TBH. Overall the scenery is beautiful and worth the 1.6 mile hike. Due to the slippery rocks and uphill trails I would suggest hiking shoes, hiking boots or non-slip footwear.
The only downside was during our hike several people were playing loud music and talking on their phones which IMO is rude and takes away from the amazing scenery, the falls and experience for others.
Be sure to get a pineapple smoothie or coconut milk drink from the food truck onsite when you're finished.

One of Many beautiful hikes to knock off your bucket list!

By Brian and Donna |

We stayed at the Waikiki hotel and resort and walked about 10 minutes to a nearby bus stop that took us to the entrance of the falls (short walk from final stop). We arrived early to beat the heat and the rush. Very moderate hike had some steep steps along the way not to hard to get up. Plenty of scenic spots to rest and take pictures. The highlight of your hike is the waterfall at the top. Feels great when you finally get there. Go early like we did otherwise you might have trouble getting through a crowd to take pics..

Beautiful

By lakini |

Our tour guide and his assistant were very knowledgeable. Hike was strenuous than what I thought it would be. Only reason is some steps were a little taller than others. Once we had arrived to the falls it wasn’t what I thought it would be. Maybe because it hadn’t rained enough. Falls was still beautiful as was the path. Coming down was very slippery and muddy. What helped coming down was the walking sticks we were given. Overall it was a nice hike. Yes I would do it again!

Very beautiful hike

By Angelia B |

This hike was very beautiful. Just wear shoes that can get very muddy, because they will! We saw lots of people with flip flops and white tennis shoes....don't do that! Even though they have added a lot of rock and large gravel to make it less muddy, it is still muddy in places (especially if you go later in the day after hundreds of people have walked along it) . But the plant life is so beautiful and the waterfall at the end is very pretty. It wasn't a huge waterfall and you cannot swim in it, but still very pretty.

Slip and slide!

By Patricia H |

Distance wise this hike should be no problem. What they don't tell you is that with any moisture it become a slip and slide! Challenging to maintain balance especially descending. Many un prepared people on trail in sandals. Waterfall was pretty but very little water coming down. Scenery is nice. Hiker beware! If we had known we would have gone elsewhere

Great hike. 10/10

By Julian M |

My wife and I did this hike and it was very much so worth it. We took public transportation (bus) from Waikiki just enter in the destination on your phone and click public transportation and the correct bus stops and bus number came up, also very safe transportation and made a breakfast stop at Yogurt story on the way, highly recommended. The bus leaves you about .25 mile from the falls entrance and it’s a beautiful walk to the falls and even better hike. If you do this hike after or during a rain the too close to the falls gets a little slippery so just wear good shoes, this was a easy, hike that I recommend for mostly everyone don’t let the slippery part scare you I just don’t recommend flip flops. We didn’t get in the water at the falls due to the bacteria that was warned about. After the hike we took the bus back to Waikiki and had a great day.

Beautiful hike

By Katie N |

We got an Uber to the start from Waikiki beach. We saw lots of chickens and there are toilets in a gift shop at the start, the hike is easy if you take it slow to enjoy the views, some parts have rough rocky ground so take your time coming down. The pathways were not too muddy

Loved it

By Pinky2401 |

A great hike. Up hill and a bit of a challenge due to the terrain but if my 75 year old mother can do it so can you. They have hiking sticks to hire if you need them. Waterfall itself isn't that amazing and you can't go in the water due to rockslides but it's still great to see. Advice - when there are signs everywhere saying 'Don't enter due to rockslides' DON'T ENTER! Morons didn't follow the rules and a whole bunch of large rocks just missed their heads. No point trying to get a better photo if your brain is too smashed in to look at it. Your shoes will get dirty.

Great short out and back with a kicking waterfall at the end!

By Victor B |

Great out and back. It’s about a mile to the falls on fairly easy gravel with a bit of elevation towards the end of the hike. All ages can do this. It gets a bit muddy when it rains. Great photo Opportunity at the end!

Manoa Falls

By Brenda K |

Very humid and hot but do-able hike with the kids. Wear hiking boots especially for kids. I don’t know how some people walked with slippers. The waterfall at the end was beautiful. Felt like being in the middle of a rainforest.

If you like to hike and love waterfalls…do it!

By Trelis730 |

Beautiful scenic hike that ends at a stunning waterfall!! Definitely worth the time for the views along the way. Saw some wild pigs and of course some chickens and mongoose too. We forgot to take bug spray! My kids got eaten up pretty good. Saw people of all ages making the trek. It has a rainforest feel to it. Muddy in spots. Very humid. Bring water and bug spray!! But definitely put it on your list of must sees!

Slip and slide

By J H |

Very muddy. They are working on it so make sure to check the open schedule. We went on a Friday, got there around 8am. Glad we started then as it was pretty busy when we were coming back down. There are some beautiful views around along the hike. Honestly I don't think it matters what shoes you wear, they will be so caked in mud that you'll have no grips anyways. I would actually not recommend heavy hiking boots as you'll likely lose them in the mud. There is a steep section that is tough with wet muddy conditioned. We didn't have a stick when walking up but were sure glad to have one for the way down. It's a small area near the falls but it's pretty. It is a very busy hike though, if you're looking for a quiet hike this is not it. But it was quick. Luckily the bugs weren't too bad when we went but I can imagine they can get terrible. Took us about an hour with the muddy conditions. In dry conditions this would be an easy peasy walk.

“Easy” is a relative term

By Susan V |

Most people say this is an “easy” hike. With the mud, and narrow trail with uneven terrain, I wouldn’t describe this as “easy.” It’s moderate, but definitely doable with kids 6 and up. There had been no rain, so there was only a trickle of water coming over the waterfall, but it was still beautiful. Overall, we enjoyed it, but didn’t leave there saying it was an “easy” hike. You may want to ask if there’s water coming over the waterfall before you start the hike, so you aren’t disappointed when you reach it after the long hike.

Refreshing!

By MY NAME IS RACE |

**Re-iteration of my wife's review**

You would feel like you've entered Jurassic park while doing this hike. The weather is really cool and the hike through the pristine rainforest with bamboo trees, birds, and flowers is magical. Expect a downpour anytime and don't forget to bring your rain jackets. There is paid parking and stores/restrooms near the trailhead.

Date of experience: November 2018

Apparently it was the filming location for the movie Jurassic Park

By norinori-san |

We trekked through the jungle and climbed up to the waterfall. On the way, I heard that it was used as a location for Jurassic Park, and my excitement skyrocketed. We arrived at the waterfall in no time. The guide said that it's been raining a lot this year, and that he was sorry if the waterfall was dry, but he said that this was the most water this month, and I was even more excited. It was fun.

Beautiful View!

By Miguel J |

Wear hiking shoes or sneakers with good grip because the trail is rocky and wet. A hiking stick can be helpful. The waterfall was a small stream, but it was still beautiful, and the area around it was too.

Fantastic Hike

By Nomad527202 |

This is not for novices, its wet, slippery, steep but oh so beautiful!
A real rainforest right here on this over developed commercial island, whodda think. A genuine tropical paradise, the guavas smell so fantastic and taste divine. Many wild exotic plants, heleconias, orchids and ferns, and the biggest trees, banyan, monkey pod, kukui nut, mango, canon ball trees, bamboo its just amazing.

Closed Mon - Thurs

By MominOC |

Closed for repair only open weekends this week. We ended up at the Lyon Arboretum which is just up the road.

Nice hike even in dry season (october)

By Annalies H |

Easy-moderate hike, i would recommend wearing shoes not sandals, and prepare to get muddy. Beautiful rain forest, takes about 35 min there and back if you're walking swiftly. The fall was beautiful for its size alone (100 ft), but apparently we went during the dry season (though we still needed ponchos), and the fall was more like a light trickle. Still a nice outdoor activity. Prepare for traffic jam and parking issues if you don't arrive first thing in the morning; we ubered for about $20 from waikiki with no issue.

Beautiful!

By Sue & Dan |

The hike was pretty easy and the falls were breathtaking! Our guide, Eric, was totally awesome! Go see it!!!!

Crowded

By Eric D |

Not the hike I remember growing up, but it's still an amazing place even if you have to pay $5 to park.

Don't try to go after rain

By Jennifer A |

Although many say they are great to see after a rain fall, often the road is closed due to mudslides. We spent 5 days on Oahu, and never able to go in due to the rainy days.

Waterfall Hike

By Karen H |

The hike to the falls took about 30 minutes and was very muddy. The views are spectacular and the falls are stunning. They warn you not to swim but we saw people swimming. The water was very cold. We went on a Saturday morning and it was very crowded. Would definitely go again.

A bit disappointing

By June_HTK19 |

The hike itself was not difficult and can be called somewhat scenic, but after all the walk and mud (and shower on the way), the 'waterfall' turned out to be just a little trickle down a very small hill...Not so rewarding especially for our young children. I would recommend Makapuu Lighthouse Trail for family. So much better.

Really nice walk through tropical rain forest to beautiful waterfall.

By Inspire747182 |

Use GPS to find Paradise Park in very back of Mona Valley. Will cost $5 to park car. Wear old shoes, will always have some mud even when no rain. Walking stick a good idea too, But not a hard walk, level, maybe 30 to 45 mins each way depending upon how fast you walk. Beautiful fall and Beautiful Forest walk

Early morning is recommended

By canty3000 |

I got up early and headed there on the Sabus.
It was very pleasant to visit Manoa Falls in the early morning. The toilets in the shop next to the parking lot reception desk just before the entrance were clean.

A great hike

By olsonj669 |

A visit to the falls begins with a lovely 1 mile hike into the hillside. Beautiful vegetation flourishes along the path. The falls itself is lovely and accessible for a swim if one chooses. Back at the bottom, a shop with delicious pineapple ice cream regenerates one from the energetic walk.

Not as grand as thought

By Tony |

The trees seemed magnificent near the beginning part but there were quite a bit of trash in many spots. The waterfall was trickling, not much water.Sort of disappointed as I was expecting more rush of water for a waterfall.

Beautiful waterfall and wildlife

By Tim L |

Nice little hike.
Can be muddy, so heads up 🤙🏻
Steep in some sections and rocky.
Trail connection to another trial at the top

Fun hike!

By lovetraveling121 |

Beautiful hike! The path is uneven from rocks and can be slippery. If you have hiking poles, you should bring them. Be sure to bring water and stop along the way to notice the beautiful greenery as you are walking. The waterfall was trickling down, and you are not allowed to go into the water. There are many beautiful stops along the way for photo shots.

Hard to hike over 4” stones

By Brian |

Very popular but very rocky, easy to twist an ankle and no fun to walk on. Sure wish their department of parks would discover pea gravel

A long walk uphill but worth it

By Arthur Ratliff |

This is one of the places that we liked most. The waterfall was great but the journey there was just a good. Don't miss the gardens on the way up

Falls and botanical garden

By Inspire61552058991 |

The trail to the falls was narrow, slippery and very congested at times. The falls were at a trickle when we went and was underwhelming but still something to see. As we hiked to the falls, my son commented that the trees and the depth of the valley they overhang gave it an Avatar(movie) feel.
We also found the botanical garden something worth seeing. I was expecting more flowers and plants with color but was impressed with the varieties of plant and large trees.

BEAUTIFUL!

By Sam E |

You must come and hike Manoa falls if you’re in town! It’s a 1.5 mile heavily trafficked easy hike, great for kids! It can get muddy so please bring hiking shoes or sneakers! Some people do them in flip flops or barefoot but please don’t. Go right after it rains as the waterfalls flows heavier. Beautiful green scenery as you hike through the bamboo forest.

your prize after at 1.5 km hike

Probably O'ahu's finest waterfall. It is a popular spot but it is quite a hike to get there, but boy is it worth it.

The falls

By shawnpolyfoam |

It was a pretty simple hike for anyone who hikes. The scenery is fantastic and tropical. I have hiked to many waterfalls on the different islands and really enjoyed seeing this one. Nice and cool the water is once you make it there. Good to go early morning during the week. Less people.

Beautiful short hike

By Fluffy |

A beautiful must-go. Very easy hike..about 1 hour. Wear hiking shoes as the trail can be muddy. The flora is astounding. We loved this visit.

Lush nature

By Christina |

An all in one beautiful day to explore the lush nature on foot. Even if one or two fallen trees block the way, you can comfortably crawl through it. Also suitable for flip flops. Look out for a sunny day to do the walk.

The breathtaking Rainforest is the REAL star of the show

By Kimberly G |

At the time I went (February), Manoa Falls looked like more of a trickle ... not really a waterfall. It didn't rain for weeks, which contributed to the Falls' "thin" cascade. Despite this, I am giving Manoa Falls 4 stars because the lush, verdant rainforest is the REAL star of the show. WOW! I can see why so many film productions chose the Manoa Falls hike for their movies ... this place looks like the garden of eden with a flourishing landscape that will take your breath away. I'm speechless!

The hike itself is NOT easy, especially for beginners or couch potatoes like myself. You WILL be out of breath if you're not an active person. Your thighs will burn and your butt will ache. The trail was completely dry when I walked up Manoa Falls, and still, my friend managed to almost slip a few times. And so did I! So I can't imagine what it'd be like while wet.

I saw a woman hiking up the trail with baby hanging on her frontside and I was horrified. I've seen people almost take a tumble several times. My friend almost twisted her ankle. Don't bring your infants on this trail people! Able bodied kids with an active spirit ONLY. Also, wear QUALITY hiking sneakers. Not anything cheap where you could feel rocks under your soles!!! Seriously, it will make your hike much easier!!

Not worth the climb, worth stopping by at the entrance

By amy |

The entrance is very enchanted with different trees - very tropical rain forest, the trail, be aware : is very muddy, will ruin your shoes ford sure unless you dress for it. Not easy hike, some path are narrow to fit people going both directions. Falls on top, it’s nice, but not worth the long, muddy hike. Some areas can be slippery too. I highly recommend you go there, stop at the beginning where you see trees and mountains in an enchanted circle,

Amazing

This was our first activity during our visit to Honolulu and it did not disappoint. Have your camera ready as the foliage and waterfalls are awe-inspiring. This hike took longer than it really needed to due to stopping for countless photo sessions. I am a beginner hiker and I would rate this trail as easy. Especially compared to Diamond Head. You will be sorry if you skip it!

A hike worth the view at the end

By Mark C |

The falls are not easy to get to. You better like hiking and depending on the weather could be hot and human. I think the hike was worth it but it was tough for me. I'm over weight and out of shape but still made it to the falls. The surroundings and views are really cool and their is an old chair on the way up there you can sit in a get a picture. I would do the hike again and swim in the water.

Good hike

By Kristina G |

We hiked this after our DiamondHead hike. It is a hike basically through a rain forest, so it is muddy. Total time to the waterfall was about 30 minutes and when you reached it, was very crowded, not able to really enjoy it.

Fun family hike

By Marianna P |

Our family of 5 enjoyed this hike. Not too strenuous, but a little muddy, even during the “dry season”. (Because of proximity to the mountains, it can drizzle at any time.) The hike is mostly shaded - so it was a good activity for us, since our son was nursing a sunburn. Take your time and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Wear good shoes, step carefully to avoid slipping. Bring water to stay hydrated.

Moderate beautiful hike

By Rebekah L |

Moderate hike, took us around 1 hour to complete. It does get steep at some parts and a little muddy if it has been raining, but the greenery on the way to the waterfall is gorgeous and there’s a nice viewing platform for the waterfall at the top.

Good workout, great scenery

By sydjesschris |

I’d say this was a moderate level hike. It’s a very rocky, uneven uphill climb and it’s wet (even when it’s not rainy) and slippery. We are a relatively fit family and we were beat afterwards, especially with the high humidity. I highly recommend good shoes, especially for the way down because it’s a lot of pressure on your toes. And your shoes will get some mud on them, no matter how hard you try. Although I did see some people in crocs and slides, I don’t recommend that. We went around 10am and it was quite crowded. The waterfall was a bit anticlimactic for us, but still glad we did it!

fun walk

By troyy0206 |

Fun walk to the falls. Convenient and easy trip from the city so if you don't have a lot of time and still want to get in a nice waterfall hike, this is great.

Very scenic hike

By Andy A |

We made this hike in the afternoon and really enjoyed it. Great way to see some unique vegetation and birds. Hike is relatively easy, but be ready for muddy and slippery paths due to the humidity level and frequent light rains. And bring some mosquito repellent for the same reason. Crowds and narrow paths at some points can make keeping a good pace challenging too. But photo opportunities are plenty. Uber can drop off and pick up right at the visitors center entrance.

BEAUTIFUL WALK

By Nici B |

we walked up to the falls it was a relatively easy walk, you do need good gripping shoes as it is wet and so easy to slip. its like a rainforest in the middle of a concrete jungle, it is beautiful walk and view

Oahu hike

By dolphindiva66 |

Like the other reviewers said, easy hike of twenty minutes to the falls. Bus (#5) from ala moana mall for about twenty minutes plus a ten minute walk to gift centre Rained while we hiked making it SUPER muddy and slippery. Beautiful canopy of 100 year old invasive species. Three interpretive signs of wildlife species at risk and fauna. Worth the little jaunt. One other trail stemming from the falls I’d like to know more about.

Absolutely Beautiful!

By Kelly B |

Absolutely beautiful. Was not raining when we started but poured half way in and continued until we returned back. It was a fairly easy hike with a couple of really steep parts before arriving at the waterfall. We arrived at 7am and there were only a handful of groups. By the time we arrived down around 8:30 am it was packed. Go early.

Beautiful natural places and all native people are always smiling and seem so happy,

By Connector690119 |

I highly recommend this trip, it has beautiful natural places, and the natives are always smiling and seem so happy. The food is good the beaches are carried from smooth to high serfing people just must be careful and see what water currents are in their different beaches

How beautiful Hawaii is!

By maria |

A stone's throw from Honolulu you immerse yourself in a rainforest full of characteristic sounds and scents. A light rain accompanied us all the way (the sun was shining in Twenty Minutes to Honolulu) until we reached the waterfall. An atmosphere to experience

Fun and a little muddy

By drwatson32 |

Beautiful hike with some muddy and rocky places. The jungle is amazing. The trees are huge. I really enjoyed the hike. The waterfall is the draw, but the jungle is the gem of this place. We paid $7 to park. Restroomsand a gift shop area with snacks are bothe available.

Old, Fat, Out of Shape--A Review of Manoa Falls Trail

By Laura McS |

The morning starts with a cool breeze and rain--perfect hiking weather if you aren't afraid of water falling out of the sky. The Manoa Falls Trail is rated as "easy," so buoyed by a false sense of self-confidence after hiking up Diamond Head, we set out after breakfast for a short easy walk to the waterfall.

Although the actual hike is a mere 0.7 miles each way the first thing you learn is that you also need to walk from the parking lot to the trailhead and this is at least an additional 0.25 miles, making the entire hike roughly 2 miles in total. Easy peasy! A little red weasel follows along from the bushes for a bit, but with no snacks forthcoming he soon loses interest.

The hike begins innocuously enough, with a wide path that meanders over a covered bridge (Actually an old shipping container, but "covered bridge" sounds much more picturesque.) Tall trees wear robes of vines festooned with purple flowers and a burbling brook skips beside the trail.

The trail soon shifts to a steep climb. It is unpaved, save for loose rocks covered with a slick coating of mud and water. It is necessary to focus on one's feet, to avoid falling and becoming some sort of park statistic. In short order my lungs are burning and my bad hip becomes increasingly sullen.

By the time the trail gets seriously steep, with more loose rocks and occasional steps with a high rise and short run, my right hip and leg are in open revolt, the leg declining to follow basic instructions from my brain. Young people carrying toddlers in backpacks pass us. Three barefoot children pass us. No doubt there is plenty of stunning scenery, but we are focused on not slipping on the wet rocks.

Near the end of the hike we find the true meaning of "steep" and tap into some secret, hidden reserve of strength. We finish. Per my fitbit we have just climbed the equivalent of 42 flights of stairs.

The waterfall is lovely, falling from a great height--but it is a slender delicate stream rather than a spectacular one. More than one person reaching the top is overheard to say, "I hiked all this way for this?"

There is a very tempting pool at the base of the falls and many people take advantage of it. However, the water in the falls is reputed to be heavily contaminated with leptospirosis and I am not interested in any sort of GI cleanse at this time.

The hike down is more difficult in some ways than the ascent. More focusing on our feet, more complaints from hip; right leg wanting to drag behind me like a dead pig. We meet a woman about our age. She's on the way up. "I thought since I did Diamond Head I could do this one easily," she tells us. False confidence claims another victim.

Once at the bottom, the smoothie stand is closed. There are bathrooms with flush toilets. Some teens in the parking lot are trying to catch a chicken with their bare hands. I wonder what their plan is, if they catch it. Our little weasel friend pokes his head out to say goodbye and we ride off into the rain.

Great hike!

This was a wonderfully scenic trail! Slippery if it just rained so be careful! If climbing past “do not enter” ropes, be mindful as the rocks shift closer to the falls. My husband and I enjoyed our time here!

Jurassic Park & ok waterfall

By scouseinthehouse |

So the greenery was beautiful. Didn’t know some of Jurassic Park was filmed there. Got very humid so a cloth would be beneficial . I got a couple of mozzy bites so big spray is a good idea too. The hike itself isn't hard but you need to be steady with no flip flops on. It’s single file at a lot of points so patience is key. No swimming in the falls is stressed. When we went there wasn’t much water gushing over he falls , more like a trickle.

Manoa Falls is a Great Spot

By CCLoop |

Manoa Falls was like a short journey into another world. It is so green and lush that it looks almost fake. The trail is a bit steep, but definitely doable. It was not muddy when we went, but there were some slippery spots, so shoes with good traction are necessary. The waterfall was OK – late August and not a lot of water, but the scenery to get there is spectacular. There are a lot of people, but they do have overflow parking, so it is not a big issue. You just will not be alone on the hike.

Pretty good hike

By Frank S |

Hike was more challenging than I expected. The end gets very steep. There were plenty of people on the trail of all ages. It was pretty muddy and slippery due to recent rain. Swimming is not aloud and there are signs clearly saying so, but there were people climbing down there to swim.

Very nice waterfall but not easy in the winter

By Laura |

I see that a lot of reviewers mention that this is an easy trail. That's certainly not the case, at least not in the humid winter. If it has rained recently as it had for us, the trail will be very muddy and slippery. You absolutely need sturdy hiking boots. Even tennis shoes will barely cut it. We saw lots of people slipping, especially on the way down. It was pretty crowded and there were no rail guards, so probably not recommended for people with overactive kids (it's a pretty long way down if you fall off the trail). The walk up takes about one hour, but you are then rewarded with an absolutely gorgeous waterfall.

Manoa Falls - worth the trip

By Steve W |

Manoa Falls trail is about 8.5 miles from Waikiki and if you take Uber it would cost around $30 one way. A very nice hike with only about an 800' gain in elevation when going to the falls. For those that say the hike does not offer much to see along the way I disagree. There are scenic areas with trees hundreds of feet high in vast open areas. It looks like a scene out of Jurassic Park. We hiked this yesterday (27 Sept '21) and it was great. They have parking which is $7 regular, $5 for military. But you can park below and walk to the falls without having to pay a fee (its free).

Very nice scenery, great pictures and videos can be had on this hike. A couple of areas along the way were areas where people could rest. The path had rocks but wife thought they should have been smaller in size to make it easier to walk and I agree. I would suggest tennis or better hiking shoes. Saw a number of people with slippers/flip flops that almost fell because of some muddy spots and a couple that twisted their ankles because of the rocks . Most of the trail had shade from the trees, bamboo, etc. but I would recommend putting on sunscreen because the UV in Hawaii can be extreme. Also suggest talking water or an electrolyte drink along the way. The humidity is high, 60-80% depending on the time of year, and some people were sweating excessively so its a good idea to hydrate before, during and after the hike.

At the top are the falls, 150' high and it was pretty cool. Got some great pics. Some people went into the pool at the base but that is not recommended. We hung out for about 40 minutes enjoying the cool mist, took some more pics and headed back down. Took more pics and videos on the way down and took our time. We went on a Monday at 11:30 - there were a bunch of people but not too crowded. I would rate the hike as easy to novice and is worth the trip if you have time.

Amazing

By dregehr |

I will begin with a tip: the trails are not for very small children nor strollers or if you have trouble with any type of stairs. The trail was very muddy on the day we arrived which is very normal for the area, bring bug spray, there are lots of roots / stairs / areas where there is only room for one person to walk but for us this was wonderful! we loved all the flora, trees and the quietness of the trip to the falls it was very exciting to hear the falls before we even saw it. We went early at 8 am to avoid the crowds, the park provides a hose to wash off the mud from your shoes, etc. be sure to pay for parking either inside the restaurant if the parking attendent is not around or at the parking lot "Cash Only". It took us about 3 hours to walk both ways but we took lots of breaks for photos and to enjoy the beauty around us.

Take a hike then a dip

By Ron M |

Great little hike, approximately 2 miles round trip, to the falls. Easy trail, as we walked it in sandals, ending at the falls with the option to enter the pond under the falls with a provided life jacket.

Easy and not too strenuous walk.

By Janvanj7 |

Very close to Waikiki and an easy well defined walk to the water falls. Can be a bit muddy and it’s not too strenuous. It’s like being in a different world.
