1 hr talk about the school and 1 hr tour was very informative...gave us a little insight into student life at MIT

Amazing

By Andrea V |

The buildings are super great! It’s so peaceful there. A good idea is to just lay on the grass and enjoy the views. You can enter inside and visit the university!

Great place to take in emerging technology

By GBaby2 |

If you can find a parking space on Mass Ave, take it, and have a look around the campus. Better yet, if you can take in a seminar or other event at MIT, take advantage of it, because this is the hub of innovative thinking!

College Tour

By Laureen G |

Very informative. The tour started w an informative talk about the school its culture n student life. She spoke about financial aide it was well done. Our tour guide showed us the school w looks at some rooms the dorm area and athletic center. Loved it and so did my kid.

Schools in season

By GuySBosMia |

Lots of over educated young and old minds fill the general area here on mass ave. I prefer to cross the bridge and hang on the other side. Interesting people around here using their powerful minds for doing good and evil at the same time. Not a fan of mit or Harvard but MIT is a lot more interesting than the square

Always nice to see the new buildings

By Barb C |

Wow am MIT keeps expanding Kendall Square is now very vertical. We’ve had a lot of really nice public spaces with public art.

BMOC at MIT

By Jim Dorman |

This was probably my favorite place to visit while staying in Cambridge for a few days, and I really didn't even plan it. I just happened to walk by campus on a Friday night as the sun was setting. You could feel the energy of the weekend beginning, but there was a lot still going on. Student were working out at the Dupont Gymnasium. Mens and Women's Lacrosse teams were busy practicing on the athletic fields and students and visitors were walking up the steps to the school's etrance on Massachusetts Ave. Surely, I thought I would need a student ID to go through those doors and enter the building, but I was wrong. Soo, I was walking down what I learned is called the "Infinite Corridor," which on this cold evening was very much welcomed. I felt like a student as I passed offices, lobby areas and classrooms, and then veered off into other corridors and stumbling upon exhibits of learning and achievement. I thought someone would soon be asking for my credentials, but that didn't happen. I soon found myself resting on a bench as a professor and a hanful of students pondered some physics near the Great Dome. Now, I am not really much of a science guy, but I found this pretty exhilarating. After finally exiting the building onto Eastman Court, I headed out to enjoy the breathtaking view of the Boston skyline from Memorial Drive. Next time I might plan my visit a littlle better and even take the the guided tour, but I was thrilled by my spontaneous Friday night visit.

Outstanding SPARK program

By antona b |

Our middle school aged child had a wonderful experience at MIT's SPARK program! There were wide varieties of options for classes that she and her friends could choose from. The event was very organized and well-staffed by the MIT community!

Amazing but ...

By Chris S |

The endowments that have funded MI T are interesting. The campus is city size by UK standards and the sports facilities are excellent. It's sprawling and an interesting area to explore. Great place for a conference although education as a big corporate...

A most impressive visit

By Mark H |

We took the kids on a tour of several colleges, with MIT amongst them and the kids were amazed. What a purely spectacular school!

Superbly great! MIT is the best!

By May Wong |

Given MIT is ranked world's number 1 top institute, it was my privilege to visit the institute with a friend in June - and we had a unique opportunity to speak with a MIT engineering professor and his students inside the MIT Museum. The museum collected outstanding projects which were created and produced by the Institute's students. That gave me a chance to experience and to learn how disruptive technology has brought impacts on the world's economy and shaped the modern business ecosystem. During my conversation with a MIT professor and his students, not only I had obtained a better understanding about what they do at the campus, but also had come to aware of the unique entrepreneurship inside MIT.

Crazy smart

By Prof_Bill |

You just have to love wandering the MIT campus! The people watching is fantastic, with such a diverse, cosmopolitan populace! You'll feel like your IQ went up a few points by just being around these crazy smart people!

Open during the christmas holidays for visitors

By Aloha_Eric |

Surprisingly this Institution was open during the holidays between Christmas and New Years, and they cater to tourists by having open buildings, a map of exhibits, and exhibits for visitors to view. I also checked out Harvard and wasn't able to wander inside those buildings, whereas MIT seemed to encourage this. My favorite exhibits were the ones that celebrated MIT's "hack" culture, where students come up with pranks that display their ingenuity.

Guided walking tour

By Clay H |

Took a free guided walking tour if MIT. Some interest by our soon to be college bound teen but more interest from my science oriented husband. Led by a friendly and knowledgeable MIT student. Interesting facts about the Dome and some of the pranks pulled by MIT students involving this building. Great views of the Charles river from the campus.

Great tour and information session

By drlisat |

We booked the campus information session and tour. The staff and guides were very enthusiastic and informative. It’s a very pretty campus with neat stories about the students and hacks. Our tour, though, was very long - 2 hours- too long in the heat.

Serious Mind Trust

By 970alexanderp |

MIT is worth a visit to observe brilliance at work. Diversity at its finest in search of excellence whatever the arena or platform!

Top Technology

By wonderlust_9 |

Unlike the beautiful brick buildings of Harvard University, MIT has a more modern and business like look. Both institutions are only a mile from one another. There was one building that was built crooked on purpose but purposeful nonetheless. The Media Lab was of special interest. One part was dedicated to creating electronic opera but right next door was the lab for prosthetic research. It had a long electronic wall so as to prevent folks from snooping and thereby stealing someone's invention. The glass could be clear and in one second be made opaque just by throwing a switch! Outside these labs there was coffee and ping pong for the engineers to relax when they go on break. This was an all world experience.

Very Cool

By I Know Places |

What a beautiful campus. We just quickly walked the main parts of the campus and it was very interesting. We loved seeing the sailboats across the street.

Better than "H.." up the road

By Ali921 |

Preferred MIT to Harvard. Lots of students around and the place seemed very vibrant. It's a large campus though and it's easy to spend a lot of time here. You can join a guided tour or get yourself a map and do it yourself without the commentary. We couldn't get over how close to Boston it is, literally across the river. Great combination of grand historical buildings alongside modern art nouveau.

Wish I studied here

By Krishnan N |

Cambridge is known for its two big academic institutions.....the MIT and Harvard.......both occupy a pride of place........MIT is well known as a technical school although it has other faculties as well.........a good walk around the campus gave me an idea to try putting my younger son for his graduate studies here or at Harvard.......

Go and see the model boats!

By Claudia H |

Did you know that MIT is a "Sea Grant" University? Inside the big, main building is a hall of scale model ships. The intricacy and precise detail is mind blowing. The hall is free and a perfect place for all ages.

Fantastic student-led tour : a must!

By TinkerC16 |

It was a lovely sunny day in Nov when I visited. The official student tours were closed for the year so was expecting to look around on a self guided tour. Went to the info centre and was told that there was a tour on at 11am. It was fantastic as also led by a student (a current sophomore in aeronautical engineering) - had a great overview of history of MIT, student life and academic options! The grounds and views across the river is a must!!

Did not have time to look in the buildings but walking alongside them was nice on this beautiful spring day

By elaine3Toronto |

Walking across from the original MIT building on the campus past some of the buildings and the sports facilities provided a pretty venue. On this particular sunny day in February where temperatures soared into the 60s many were sitting and enjoying the outdoors. In addition to the joggers, cyclists, and skateboarders, parents pushing prams and walkers used the pathway. The wonderful weather belied the snow that still hung around from a snow storm the previous weekend.

Awesome Lab !

By Kathryn C |

We really enjoyed visiting MIT. The lab was amazing! So many cool things to do and see! Well worth the visit!

World-famous school of learning

By KodoDrummer |

MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) was founded in 1861 and is especially famous for engineering, science, computer technology and software development, including for radar and navigation, and is famed for having invented the World Wide Web.

Beautiful campus

By David J |

Was here for MIT Splash and my son did the signup but neglected to sign me up for the tour. Did the self-guided one and was very impressed with facility and integration with the business community. Met some fascinating people along the way.

Organized MIT campus tour with trademark tours

By dalidude |

The tour over the MIT campus was really interesting. We had a former student who was working at MIT and showed us around. As this tour is free format to a certain extent you can't tell exactly what you will be seeing. We went through the new parts of Campus towards Massachusetts avenue and the original buildings including the dome where a lot of MIT hacks take place.

I found it very interesting to learn more about MIT and fascinating to see how large and diverse this institute is. If you would like to learn more about MIT this tour is a great way to learn more.

Beautiful campus, friendly staff & community

By Heather K-H |

We were visiting MIT so my son could tour the university and take part in the solar eclipse. The campus was very welcoming!

Pretty Campus on the Charles River

By Grover R |

While we did not get to directly visit MIT as Harvard, we did on multiple occasions get to see the main domed structure that defines the campus. The round stone dome of MIT can be easily seen from the Charles River and the Prudential Building from where we saw it. It is a very pretty campus on the river.

EmTech 2017

By SvenJ79 |

Was here for a conference and had the chance to visit parts of the campus. Would recommend to visit the older buildings. Impressive

The icon

By BixUS |

If you're looking for an education in the sciences or even the humanities and want a place to learn how to learn, critique, and think, this is the school. Period.

Enriching visit

By olivier D |

Visit with a guide full of anectodes on the mit and ingenuity of its students. The outside visit is pleasant

MIT... Name is enough...Fascinating Campus!

By sanju_222323 |

As a tourist, I found out MIT is a cooler place to visit than Harvard. I mean for the architecture, the stories, and the cool things going on in the school. The engineering building was the coolest to see.
You definitely need to plan ahead as they have limited space. The hour information session could have been condensed to 35 minutes, but otherwise was very helpful. The walking tour was more informative. The campus is beautiful with many unique buildings.
Stroll through Killian's Court and take a walk on the riverside to see the crew teams and sailing teams as they practice and race on the Charles River.

MIT is great!

By MasterCat7182 |

I am a big fan of "Good Will Hunting" and wanted to feel the atmosphere of the corridors. Conclusion: totally worth trying even if you are not interested in science!

Nice views

By AndyB5542 |

We wondered around MIT, especially along the water front. This has some of the best views of Boston.

Some of the University buildings are open to the public, so water and restrooms are available.

Amazing Architecture

By jonathan s |

Spectacular setting and architecture. Was super impressed at how the campus flowed and how the disperse architectural styles blend together seamlessly. Definitely worth a visit.

A place Frankenstein will love!

By Lydier H |

I was here in the Veterans Day. It wasn't a busy day maybe because students are in break?

The open air space in front of the Great Dome is such a wonderful place to be. Sitting on the soft lawn open to the horizon of the city and river. I immediately draw my awareness to the lively things around me.

Speaking about the tidiness, I personally think Stanford has a better campus appearance. MIT in the other hand, Physics&science experiment labs, event posters are distributed all over across the hallway. Sitting space, display shelves are unthoughtfully arranged. I felt the overall campus are disorganized and messy. But I-L-I-K-E-IT! Because you won't make a thing if your hands stay clean. I just appreciate very much the vibe here. The smell of technology and science with a bit touch of human nature.

Booked Early, Great Presentation

By MacAndTrips |

Although I was a solo traveller, I still decided to take MIT's advice and reserve a space for the information session and guided walking tour. It took roughly 1.5 hours, with the presentation taking up 45 minutes and the tour taking the rest. Good information shared on the campus, but it is definitely geared more towards prospective students rather than history buffs looking to learn about the ins and outs of MIT. Highly recommend if you're going to apply for the university.

Look for the names on the buildings

By HarvardVegan |

The legacy of MIT is in part found by understanding the names on the buildings, the uses of the buildings, and the functions of the Institute's research centers.

The MIT

By Rafael Ishi |

The MIT is just great, if tou have some time to visit you must go. The tours are free and are given by undergraduate students. They tell a lot about the tech and entrepreneurship style of the MIT. I am a mechanical engineer and this was really cool for me.

Most Iconic Tech University

By mk5705 |

One of the Iconic Technology university in America , located right near the Charles river , beautiful and modern campus

The Pride of Cambridge

By ModdyinVermont |

A big, beautiful campus with a view of the Charles River and Boston's Esplanade. The best pub, The Muddy Charles. And the very best radio station, WMBR. Jazz, African, Punk, all kinds of music.

Beautiful Riverfront Campus

By Anthony |

MIT's campus along the Charles River is a scenic and beautiful place to visit. Being along the water adjacent to Memorial Drive, it affords splendid views of the Boston skyline. In my opinion, it is much more scenic compared to Harvard's older and more congested campus.

MIT contains a mix of classical and more modern buildings, including the Frank Gehry designed Stata Center that houses the Computer Science buildings. The most famous set of buildings are the great dome on Building 10 and the original classical buildings surrounding Killian Court. The courtyard can be accessed from Memorial Drive and is east of Mass Ave. Note that the academic buildings are located east of Massachusetts Ave while most of the buildings to the west are dormitories and athletic facilities. Many buildings are accessible to the public, though some may be locked on weekends and holidays.

Parking can be tight in the area. There are metered spots on the east side of campus near Kendall Square or you can use the private parking lots adjacent to the Marriott and Marriott Residence Inn. If you are looking for MIT memorabilia, the MIT Coop is also located at Kendall Square close to the Marriott (closed on Sundays though). The T's red line stops at Kendall Square if you wish to get to campus by train. .

If in the area, check it out.

By Traveling Glen. |

I visited several sites on the campus while attending school at MIT. There are just a lot of little hidden gems, and interesting displays all over the campus so it is hard to nail down just a few. It really is a nice to just go and wonder around place, or take a tour. Very centrally located and many other things to do in the area, with a lot of nice little bars, and places to eat scattered around.

MIT merchandise

By Susan T |

The bookstore wasn't easy to find and we got there with less than an hour to shop so it was super rushed. They had some things we wanted but other things weren't available which was disappointing, and rather pricey.

Average plus

By warren D |

Other than the domed building, iconic, there is nothing especially magnetic about the MIT campus. It is tough to find parking here. The buildings are numbered and the numbering system eludes easy understanding; walk in one and ask for directions and you may well find the person you ask non-plussed.

Disappointing Campus Tour of MIT

By Christopher B |

We found the buildings and campus to be ugly. Maybe because it was February and there seems to be no nature, but the campus has a very industrial feel - like something out of the movie Brazil. We walked the hall between West and East, saw some class rooms and walked the campus. The buildings (inside and out) seemed dirty. We did visit the athletic complex. The pool areas was nice, but the ice hockey rink was below average. We visited on a Saturday and the campus was not that busy with students (studying maybe). Other than the campus there is not much to do in that part of town. If you have a choice between visiting the MIT campus or Harvard, I would choose Harvard.

Very nice university

By Cannuck1964 |

The world renowned MIT is relatively close to the equally famous Harvard University. We didn’t venture to visit inside any buildings but just drove around. It was nice to see the (genius) students walking around and have a glance of what being a college student in that university must be.

A tech minded student’s dream

By melrox559 |

My daughter is currently exploring universities to which she would like to apply. MIT is top of her list. MIT does not disappoint. The campus is expansive and has a diverse and unique culture. This beautiful campus is a must.

Second visit and tour

By gcvsd-cy |

I was here 2 years ago on a college tour with my first child, who wasn't really interested anymore after the info session so we didn't go on the tour then. We came back here this past weekend for my second child who was also on the fence after the info session, but we decided to go on the tour anyway.

So in both cases, the info session was actually a bit dry and monotonous. I can see why my kids did not really like it. On the tour, our first guide wasn't very convincing either. She didn't seem that knowledgeable and didn't really speak up. After our first stop on the tour, we decided to leave. But then we noticed the next tour group had someone who seemed more knowledgeable and spoke loud and clearly. We decided to join that group instead.

Overall, the tour was ok and we did end up finishing the tour. We learned a lot about MIT and were glad we did it. MIT's campus feels very cold and industrial to me. Much of it is very symmetrical and feels like a museum. It doesn't have that historic, nostalgic feel that you get when visiting a campus like Harvard's or Yale's. The only building that was very different was the newer Computer Science building, which looks like something out of a Dr. Seuss story. I really liked this building, and there was quite a bit of activity going on in this building at the time so it felt lively.

Greatness

By Emilie W |

When in Boston, you have to visit both MIT and Harvard. Try to attend a lecture, some are open to the public if you just sign up as long as there is a special event during the weekend for instance.

Love walking about this campus!

By Allison A |

Just here to visit. My son works here and we were simply milling about. Nothing in particular strikes us we walked and talked, enjoying a beautiful day.

Alumni

By Have Allergies Will Travel |

As alumni we love going back, but I can't imagine what tourists would do. Enjoy the lawn in front of the dome, look for a free talk, or maybe visit the MIT museum. Many buildings are locked to non-MIT people.

Waste of time and money

By Johannes N |

The guide had no clue and did not seem interested in the tour. He could not even answer the easiest questions. What a waste of time and money!

Completed a five day programme and a walking tour

By Foodie935 |

What a once in a lifetime experience! Please do a walking tour to take in the history and achievements of this amazing institution.

Architecture gem in Cambridge, MA

By Alejandra N |

If you’re ever in Cambridge and are planning to visit MIT, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, I really recommend stopping by the Ray and Maria Stata Center, a wonderful creation of the famous architect Frank Gehry. The center is open to visitors, you can walk around and enjoy this magnificent architecture gem at the heart of Cambridge, MA.

Boston's must visit place

By Siddhartha T |

I've been living in Boston since past 3 years and I generally don't visit MIT regularly, but I take my friends or family whoever visits Boston to MIT for at least 2-3hour tour. Its such a huge university and every-time I visit, I find out something new and interesting. Its one of the most happening places in Boston and a must go place!

Lovely area

By MrMrsHappyR |

Although not quite as plush and historic as Harvard area, still lots of fantastic buildings and stuff to see. The area around the fine is impressive.

Study here if you can

By Ignacio A |

This is one of the temples of engineering worldwide. If you are smart enough, you should apply to study here and the gates of excellence will be opened for you.

Great Experience

By ENVEBUZZ |

MIT is probably the best engineering school in the work (well...along with Georgia Tech :)). It's location is scenic and campus has quite a buzz.

Sure, great history, but not the place you want to attend.

By RANDY A |

We took my son who is interested in the school for a tour and I have to say they really don't put on a good show. While MIT has a great reputation and has done great things in the past, they did not present an experience that many today would want from a top university. There was no identity other than " we build things". The buildings are nice, but when you have cheap plastic chairs and don't see to the details of a place, you really leave a poor impression. I give the school credit for some nice buildings, but these have been there for years. Do live off your laurels, improve, strive to be better than you have been, use the dollars you have really impress. We didn't see it. We have toured other ivy league school and they have really outclassed this institution, which is what you feel like you are visiting, and institution.

Great walk

By LJ Bjorkevoll |

If visiting Boston you just have to take a walk on MIT campus. It is huge. Kind of interesting to see all the names on the buildings :)

You probably need to take an organized tour

By Jan O |

This is a great university but there wasn’t a tour running when we arrived and we didn’t want to wait 2 hours so we did the self guided tour with the map. I don’t think we got the best out of our time here. Certainly it’s worth a visit but a guide would help you to enjoy it more.

Confusing

By jehenson81 |

Unlike Harvard up the road, there are no maps or signs around the campus to help you figure out where you are going. The campus is a mix of old and new and has lots of green. There are paths that go to nowhere and I didn't find the visitor information office (free maps outside) until I was done looking around. It is a lovely place but I pity the new students when they are trying to find there way around.

If you're in the neighborhood, gotta walk the campus

By Happy T |

Walked from Fenway to Harvard Square and took a detour when we saw MIT. Woowzer, beautiful campus, and cool students.

Traditional vs Innovative

By Manuel M |

MIT Campus is more urban tan Harvard, and it is formed by an interesting combination between old and traditional buildings, and new and very innovative ones. You can stop at Kendall station of the T and walk through Vassar and Massachusetts streets, and finally walk at Memorial Dr. with a wonderful sight of the river and the landscape of the city. Doing this you can walk all around MIT and see most of its attractions. Also, if you want more details, in the main building lobby (Great Dome), you can take a tour.

I could feel the vibe of technology

By Haneul B |

Even though there were many scaffoldings, I liked the buildings and places. It wasn't that astonishing but good to look around.

Lovely.

By Adriana P |

This is one of the most beautiful university campuses I have seen. It is so captivating; intriguing and aesthetically pleasing.
The buildings are juxtaposed in such a way that you feel like walking around an architectural masterpiece.
I love the vibe of the students walking around and the modern sculptures and embellishments all through the campus.
It's definitely an amazing place to visit if you're in the area.

Pretty campus to see if you are lost

By stephanier76 |

We took the wrong turn and ended up in the middle of the campus when walking back to our hotel but hey atleast its a pretty campus to be lost on. :)

Beautiful campus

By Jeffrey L |

Can see why it is considered by some the best college in the world. Campus is in a great location across from Boston in Cambridge. Walked across a bridge into Boston to go to a Red Sox game. Beautiful campus. Of course the students and faculty are what make the school so special. Nice place to visit.

The cradle of technology! Highly recommended

By GeraldoZafalon |

I and my wife loved the visit to the MIT. We visited many places in the campus. The buildings are very imposing, modern and you really breathe knowledge. Moreover, its gardens are very spectacular. The dome building is the nicest one. We had visited some labs. Very nice!

As coming back to your college times

By Rodrigo |

MIT tour lead by a student (in my lucky case, Sara, a very enthusiastic economics student focused on AI) is made for any kind of visitor, and perfect for whom wants to have a flavor of that college good times back again! Mainly for me that graduated in Electrical Engineering 10 years ago in Brazil!
Sara covered not only that kind of formal explanation about campus and MIT famous past achievements for society, but also, she shared some curiosities about students day-by-day, where they live, smart hacks they used to do and fun times they have there.
She answered all kind of questions with open heart answers, always with a proud smile on her face!
I felt like I came back in time, willing to stay there and being part of that community!
Who knows, maybe I come back to know their drone group hangouts!

Must-do

By Zio Billy |

MIT is one of the best school in the world. Visiting its campus is a must-do when visiting Boston! The main building is impressive, but there are many other interesting buildings around the campus.

Long awaited visit

By RAJENDU |

We visited this Institute on a sunny day. The Institute is simply awesome. It has completed its 100 years. The rooms are huge. The lawns on the bank of river Charles are huge and awe inspiring. The weather was good and we enjoyed our visit.

Impressive feeling.

By Sander_Yoho |

For good pictures a nightshot might be better. Buildings are impressive with all these famous scientist enscripted. Gives you the feeling this is where the innovations come from.

MIT student led tour

By Nicole C |

Austin was a high energy guide with lots of fun stories. The tour is great because you learn a lot of history, visit the inside of the campus buildings and can ask lots of questions.

Great University! Awesome Tour!

By LS142 |

We visited MIT in April as a part of my college visit. It was freezing and as you can see, the snow barely melted. We booked the official tour from the website as well as an information session. The college counselor is very friendly and she talks to us a lot about Calculus and engineering. We even received a free pen, and a personal packet regarding the things I am interested most about MIT when I first registered online. The student tour guide is also very friendly, and he talks to us a lot about his life in MIT largely from his own perspective. Still a shame that I did not get the chance to visit any of its dorms, especially Simmons.

Beautiful

By estellecoulombe |

Me and my husband were walking our way back to the apartment We rented during our vacation in Boston and We pass by this Beautiful building. We did'nt visit inside, We just went in for the restroom and it was to late to go visit. But We Walked outside and went In the big garden with a Beautiful view of Charles river. I wish it was warmer outside! ( march, cold and windy!)

Cool Campus

By The World is My Oyster |

We strolled in and around the campus and enjoyed the architectural design of the buildings. Inside the halls was also pretty cool and attending one of the classes was a highlight!

Don't miss a visit here

By Lucia2148 |

MIT is one of the great universities in the world, actually, so take a long stroll around the campus and enjoy seeing the students, their classrooms, dorms and the monumental buildings of the University. Find your way to the infinite corridor and walk it..make sure to read the posters on the wall and look in the labs which you can see from the hallways. Enjoy a great meal in the Stratton Center...the food court is amazing....open day and night...and also take a look at the athletic center...amazing...

Fun campus to visit

By Jason R |

MIT was an enjoyable place to visit with interesting history, facts and architecture. The campus is set within the city, so a lot of walking, but enjoyable.

Not a beautiful campus, but functional

By MackinacMegan |

We were in Boston for vacation and took our teenaged son to MIT. Let's just say it looks like a campus where engineering and other very technical majors dominate. Most of the buildings wouldn't strike people as beautiful. Apparently someone told them they needed to spice things up...we ran across this highly unusual building that looked like something out of a Dr. Seuss book. Talk about going from one extreme to another! 😄 We walked through the halls and it was pretty obvious important education was going on there-it was a serious place. Not an artsy place. We were thinking of the movie "Good Will Hunting" as we walked the halls...

All this being said, this university produces some very amazing scholars-I can't recall how many astronauts graduated from there, but it was more than 20. It may not be the most beautiful campus, but talk about a terrific place to get a good education on highly technical topics. You'll feel the seriousness when you hit campus-so it's worth visiting.

Best College Information Session and Tour

By AndreLePlume |

My son and I visited MIT during our tour of colleges, almost on a whim, figuring that it would be a long shot for him to get in. This was during a tour of ten colleges in the northeast. Both the info session and the tour were so impressive that he has decided to apply. Recognizing that nearly everyone who applies to MIT will be very qualified, as he is, it became clear that MIT wants enthusiastic, driven people who intend to make the most of their education. It's still a long shot, as they have so many people applying. But the people at the school were so welcoming and did such a good job that it convinced us he has a shot. We toured most of the Ivies and a number of other "name" schools. This was clearly the best tour.

The architecture is amazing

By Bilqees |

I wanted a tour of the tour University when I stumbled on their undergraduate admission information tour.

Parents brought their kids who are just starting high school to learn about the requirements. Like most top schools, they are big on both academic and social life. A huge percentage of their students minor in Music; the school has many Acapella groups, funds exchange programs and promotes entrepreneurs by giving out money to fund business ideas.

One of our tour guides is studying Physics and wants to minor in comparative media while the second one is studying computer science and wants to minor in a course that has to do with using glass to design things.

Most architectures have a compelling story behind it..

Infinity...

By Marco T |

Check the MIT out. It is impossible to not being inspired and impressed by the buildings and the area. You can just feel that this is one of the places where future is created. Take a look at the infinity hall and enjoy the different shapes and parts of the MIT. Costs nothing but brings a lot of benefit!

Beautiful, but it still isn't harvard

By sopranocharisma |

Don't get me wrong, MIT has a beautiful campus, but it's still not Harvard University!

This doesn't mean you should just skip it, you shouldn't! Go see it as well, but just know it isn't quite as lovely as Harvard!

Much like any school you can't get in if you're not a student, which makes sense of course, but there's so much history and beauty to be surrounded by!

Definitely a must see!

Hey it's MIT!

By Andy G |

MIT is the crown jewel of Cambridge, far more so than its neighbor down the road, Harvard. The architecture is varied and extraordinary, the on-campu art exceptional, and the students and the faculty, of course, are the best in the world. MIT is the home of innovation, and lacks the conservativism of Stanford and the elitism of Harvard and the Ivys. An exciting and exhilarating place to visit.

Worth a visit when in Boston

By BrussoDallas |

We did a Cambridge bike tour that brought us over to the MIT campus. It's very unique with a lot of history. If you don't have time to do a tour with someone that can give you a few facts about MIT try & stop by on your own & check it out.

World Famous Institution

Cambridge has two world famous centres of higher learning, this and Harvard University. The campus is large and boasts some fine buildings and open spaces. We were able to freely wander around and even went inside a couple of buildings. The campus extends to the river banks and when we visited an enormous grassed area was set up with many hundreds of chairs ready for 'Commencement'.

Great to see

By Lex_Tex_Mex |

This is a modern campus with angular buildings, some of which have reflective surfaces - very different to Harvard. You are also unable to enter any of the buildings, except the main reception building. It's a cool campus to stroll around and marvel at the modern architecture. The MIT coop is a great store, that sells not only MIT memorabilia, but also books at reasonable prices.

Openness And Embracing Differences

By Edmund K |

MIT is dichotomous to eveything that Harvard - traditional, classical, conservative - stood for. The campus is functional, modern, open and welcoming. Breaking away from the past and looking forward to the future, MIT architecture gives visitors the feeling it dared to accept differences in knowledge and perspective and courageous to include those who challenges prevailing order. We found only a handful of buildings that were from New England days. Visitors could roam openly on the ground floor; of course key research are conducted farther in and in corners and upper floors. Faculty was friendly and polite to strangers. Overall MIT exudes an atmosphere and culture of confidence. Grab a map from the admission office. Go round on your own.

Incredible architecture!

By Annie N |

This place is truly amazing. You see an old buildng in one place and then behind it a super modern, crazy looking building. The stata center was really incredible. Amazing place to visit!

An experience

By Babbabra |

We've done a fast visit to the Campus.

A great experience, a way to encourage people to proceed in the study.

Big area but relax.
We've visited it when the Accademic Year was not started yet. but crawdy of new students.

Following the footsteps of Nobel laureates!

By njan45 |

Massachusetts Institute of Technology or MIT has played a great role in the industrialization of USA. Walking through the streets of MIT and looking at some of the old buildings was very interesting, especially the walk along the river. We missed the walking tour.

An inspiration to all who revere science & learning

By Gerri B |

The ceiling of the main entry hall will inspire anyone who understands the importance of the well-rounded education that MIT offers those with the desire to learn.

Nice tour on beautiful campus

By Larry W |

We visited the MIT campus for the sole purpose of taking the tour with our daughter. It was a good visit with the exception of their parking lot. We were supposed to park in a given lot for the tour, but the guard simply did not want to let us in. Finally, after three conversations with the Admissions Office, he relented. Grrrrr!!! The rest of the tour was great. They have amazing programs, buildings, and facilities in general. It is no wonder that they are so recognized as being the best engineering university in the United States. It was well-worth our travel to see this place.

Very interesting and great exhibits, but expensive for a family to go

By Farmer A |

I enjoyed everything about the museum except the price. Way too much for an afternoon with the kids.

Beautiful campus.

By Murilo Rangel |

If you are in Boston, it is worth to visit MIT campus. Nice buildings full of history on discoveries.

A dream visit for architecture lovers!

By MidwestKathM |

The MIT Campus is a dream for architecture lovers!! Despite the buildings being closed due to the pandemic (campus reopens for the fall term), we had to visit to see the campus, to understand the layout, and see the buildings designed by some of the great architects of the 20th century: Eero Saarinen's MIT Chapel and Kresge Auditorium; Alvar Aalto's Baker House, four buildings by I.M. Pei, and Frank Gehry's Stata Center. Truly awesome! Also enjoyed seeing sculptures by Alexander Calder and Mark di Suvero. Hope to make it back someday to see the interior of some of the buildings as well as some of the murals and other art!

Discovering art and science

By georgioss443 |

Art and science findings intertwined with ample spaces for business meetings make for a friendly experience at this dynamic location. Strolling in and out, with the opportunity to discover people and technology in the making. Located next to the river offers a sunny and refreshing walk. Try the different cafes inside the buildings.

Nothing Like Harvard

By harvman |

A trip to Boston will expose you to many colleges and universities, and MIT is one of the country's finest- so a visit here after stopping in at Harvard seemed logical. Very impressive buildings but the campus we saw was nowhere as beautiful as Harvard's layout. Worth a walk by and appreciation for the brilliant students and faculty that are there.

A great urban campus

By Steve P |

Directly across the Charles River from Boston (indeed you can walk across the misnamed Harvard Bridge). M.I.T. Is architectural feast with an eclectic selection of buildings designed by many world renown architects from I.M. Pei to Alvar Alto. The campus boasts an Alexander Calder “stabile’ called the Great Sail”.

Really enjoyed today's tour with Barbie. She was bright, informative and focused and had a gentle, kindly manner with the group. We learned a lot and had fun.

Nerd Heaven

By catz86 |

Because of Boston Team Handball, I have more friends who are MIT alumni than any of the elementary, high school or universities I attended combined. Part of the community engagement philosophy, MIT is very open campus. I have regularly enjoyed studying/reading/knitting in Barker library (directly under the dome) and Hayden overlooking the glorious Charles. Walking Infinity Corridor, viewing color floor installation, soaking up all the brilliance in the air is infectious. Makes you want to up your Spinoza quotient, love your neurons quantumly and bask at the periodic table. There are all sorts of quirky, adorable historic things to learn too...count the Smoots across the bridge to Boston for example.

Visit to MIT

By Shirishg28 |

Life changing experience. The campus gives lot of energy. It's fascinating to see the work of Nobel laureates and learn about their teaching skills. Impressive reading hall. Campus is an integral part of the Boston and merges seamlessly with city. Inspiring stories. We had wonderful experience. Thanks to Chintan

Interesting Architecture

By Andrew B |

We visited MIT right after Harvard and were a bit underwhelmed. The architecture is unique but the campus lacks the special feel of Harvard. We did a self tour so it's possible the experience would be enhanced by taking a tour, but if you only have time for one of the schools in Cambridge, choose Harvard.

The other Cambridge University

By JWC87 |

No visit to Cambridge is complete without visiting MIT. A world class University with a beautiful campus and brilliant students and faculty hustling between classes in full view of the Charles River and Boston skyline. Not to missed.

Phenomenal institution

By Dennis S |

Tour of labs was fascinating and educational. Great place to learn Profs are worth spending anytime with.

College tour

By Katherine F |

Loved the overview given by an admissions officer. My daughter feels she would be right at home here where the quirky & nerdy seem to rule.

Quirky campus

By azbz |

Just outside of Boston, MIT is a beautiful campus to visit. There are some quirks---the buildings go by letters and numbers like W20 and a whole cluster is connected so kind of feels like a rabbit warren. Get a tour from a student to hear all about the famous pranks that took place on campus. Great place to see the Charles River on a sunny day.

Impressive city!

By Trek19990702118 |

Cambridge was a very impressive city, with many walking and biking throughout, heading to business, school, or social activities. We thoroughly enjoyed the choices of restaurants and an informational tour of MIT as well.

Nice spare time visit

By Vincent I |

Did the student-led tour - some good info but variable quality of presentation. There are some nice buildings and grounds. Coop shop has a decent selection to browse. If you have to choose between visiting here and Harvard, definitely recommend the latter.

Great student-led tour

By Jyerel |

We went there for the student-led tour, and even though it was raining (more like sprinkling), the tour went on as usual. The student guide was very engaging. I got to learn about the history of MIT, their traditions, culture, hacks, and student life. And most of all, the tour brings us into the buildings! Our tour started a little later than what they said, but there was an information session for prospective students before the tour so we waited in the lobby of building 7 (where the tour will begin). It was worth it.

Great tour!

By Susan S |

Jane was a very knowledgable guide! Lots of entertaining stories and insites into the campus and student life. I would highly recommend it to anyone!

Beautiful Abstract Campus

By marinexbiologist |

I really enjoyed walking around MIT. It was just a short walk from the T-station and the sidewalks were not super crowded. Perhaps I just got lucky with the timing, but the parts of the campus that I walked around were not very crowded and were quiet. Even if you are not a student, I highly recommend taking a half-day to visit the campus and seeing everything that MIT has to offer.

Beautiful Campus

By Aref R |

One of the most beautiful campuses I have visited. Love the building architectures, and the easy accessibility. Appears to be very safe.

Excellent campus

By Aeon |

Technological university, great campus, picturesque location next to the river, sailing club on the banks of the river.

BIG-BIG-AND-BIGGER

By Jhirsch51 |

The last time I saw MIT was in 1957, when I was a lovelorn college student visiting a date. So I never saw much except my date's big brown eyes. This time I was taken around the campus by a friend's son who is a post-doc there. The campus is a small city, a show case of architectural styles. We traveled along many paths and streets, as well as through a network of tunnels and I got to see "state of the art" labs and workshops. I didn't really understand most of what I saw but the place is a marvel of cutting-edge technology and invention and well-worth seeing even if one has no particular interest in or affiinity for science or engineering.

Beautiful campus. Go to MIT Museum if you have time.

By Alfred M |

Take a student led tour and you will learn about student hacks, amazing graduates and see some of the cutting edge and once cutting edge architecture. Stroll through Killian's Court and take a walk on the riverside to see the crew teams and sailing teams as they practice and race on the Charles River.

Impressive

By Jess |

I toured parts of MIT during an afternoon in December. I saw the entrepreneurship center, media lab, and csail. I was very impressed with the innovative qualities and the people/professionals that I met. I would recommend this institution highly. They've got the right formula and do not accept boundaries or status quo.

Great University 😃😃😃

Awesome location, facing Charles river. Greatness, huge campus. Lots of different buildings with different architectural designs

Dream came true

By Hossain Asad |

Finally I could make the journey to MIT.... The place for best of best. Really many things to learn from here.

Loved it

By archman8 |

I simply love this University campus (truth is, I love most University campuses). I love the variations of building architecture, from the original historic classroom buildings to the mid-50s-60s steel and glass cubes to the ultra-modern stainless steel Stata Center with curved walls. Even in mid-summer, the campus was oozing with young minds eager to learn. It's infectious and glorious. Made me feel young again.

World's Best Science University

By IainH99 |

I was attached to MIT recently - a powerhouse of scientific research and analysis. Welcoming to students and faculty from around the world. Outstanding. Additionally, has a world class social science and humanities school so not narrow in scope.

Nice Campus

By rorudupa |

Lots of interesting areas to see, sculptures and artwork sprinkled through campus. You can walk down the Infinite Corridor and see open labs. Dorm on west side of campus has interesting architecture, east side has the Strata Center.

Where science and technology thrives

MIT is the Mecca of STEM students. The campus is full of interesting buildings, both old and new. The view of Back Bay from the Great Dome is very nice.

A Brilliant Site for Brilliant Students

By Antarctic |

Being an Engineer and coming from Cambridge UK, a trip to MIT was always something on the to-do list. MIT does not have old historical colleges, gardens etc., but it does have a great buzz and some very motivated students. In the main entrance is a sign advertising tours of the site. The 1100 hrs tour was hosted by a very enthusiastic young lady from the computing faculty who gave a very honest and interesting overview of the University.

Some of the facilities including the sports and swimming building were incredible. A student at MIT is certainly well equipped to succeed.

If you get the opportunity, take one of the student led tours - you will not be disappointed.

Great tour

By Colette Parker |

I took the campus tour that was open to the public, and it was great. It was so exciting to be able to visit such an amazing institution. The architecture was amazing, as was the tour guide, Jessica. I would highly reccomend it.

Interesting place for a visit

By Alan G |

Most museums on campus are free and fascinating. Corridor displays, architecture, and public art, too. See examples of current research. The official "MIT Museum up Mass. Ave. does charge admission. I understand it is a school, too.

Great Humanities departments

By James B |

People don't generally know that MIT has great departments in humanities disciplines such as Literature, History, and Philosophy.

Great place to work

By Vitaliy_Deitery |

I've been working here for more than 6 months already and I love it. Great place to visit as well! Nice view to Boston and Charles River. You can walk through the campus and look how the student life organized here. I also recommend taking a picture near the STATA building on Vassar Street and Mass Ave intersection.

I attended a Professional Summer Program in Combat Systems Engineering and Ship Design at MIT.

By Yorba_Linda_Mike |

80 hours of intense study into to how the Navy wants to design and build the DDG-51 Arleigh Burke series of destroyers. We developed a contract design package that optimized both form and ease of construction within the requirements of a naval ship. Our endeavors in a variety of ship combat system areas were particular noteworthy.

An interesting place to visit but download a map before you go or schedule a tour

By EGRap |

Enjoyed the campus but it was not very intuitive how it is organized and where some of the most interesting activities may be. Suggest to download a map before you visit to help yourself navigate

Really appreciated the bookstore on campus and the original shirts (see attached pictures) for sale there.

MIT great campus

It is fun to see MIT with all its history and the scene of the movie "Good Will Hunting". Enjoyed walking around campus.

Great

By Yash S |

Couldnt roam the entire campus because of time constraint but even from outside it is worth visiting.

Not great for non-student visitors

By Sarah H |

We were looking forward to visiting MIT, but were a little disappointed in the tour options for non-students. MIT provides a handy map that you can use to help guide you around campus but the descriptions are very hard to read. For such a renowned university, I had hoped for a more formalized tour or audio guide.

Visits to see my old colleagues and see facilities

I was fortunate to do a course at the Sloane School of Management at MIT, the lecturers were first rate, but also the location and history of the institution are great.

Best Engineering School in the Country!

By Sue S |

We went to visit and were completely impressed. The students are passionate and SMART! The facilities are modern and beautiful. The information session and tour were organized and informative.

Tour the University

By lcamacho |

Even if your teenager has no interest in attending the university, the student led tours are fun and informative. Instead of the image I had in my mind of students just pouring over books, competing with each other and on the verge of nervous breakdowns I learned they work together and have a lot of fun following their passions in and out of the classroom. Lots of funny stories about hacks (pranks). I loved getting a peak inside so many of the buildings.

Warm Welcome!

I attended a Welcome Dinner event with my son. Students and administration were very warm and welcoming! It was an honor and pleasure to be there.

MIT Visit

By Chelsea S |

Such a beautiful campus, a wonderful blend of old and new modern. Very clean, friendly atmosphere, and felt like a closed campus in the city. My son is a rising sophomore and we went for an informal visit. Will go back for a formal visit in the spring or next summer.

Didn't have enough time!

By Anna B |

We went through the MIT museum and were fascinated by the things in the exhibits. My husband is into 3D printing and was able to look into several workshops that work with that technology. Wish we had had more time to look around.

A dream come true

I have always wanted to visit this institute. A premium engineering institute of the world. I spent 4 days with the intellectuals here and enjoyed every moment of it. One can see history here.

Great place to visit when in town!

By minijega |

The entire space is open to visitors and worth a stroll even if you're not a student. There are many interesting exhibits in the hallways and you can peak through the windows of many laboratories where top scientists and engineers work. Stata Center and the Infinite Corridor are awesome. The stroll we had was inspirational for our kids.

Outstanding school; a mixture of architectural style

By ECWorld |

There is little doubt about the prestige of the university, but as an attraction the campus was a strange mix of different architectural styles. Many buildings did not have names and looked a bit factory buildings, then of course there was beautiful main building was the landmark of MIT as well as the beautiful new computer science building. But there was no dominant architectural style, and the individual buildings were just that - they just did not seem to fit together very well.

This is where my Daddy went to School

By Lisa S |

I love the campus of MIT in Cambridge Massachusetts.

This is where my Daddy went to School,
And he loved this place. We often strolled
The campus together and they have a great Art Museum that houses the largest
Collection of Theadore Roszak, who was, in my opinion, a genius.
This is Cambridge at it's best.

Beautiful, inspiring, practical, and easy to access

By Nick Byrd |

I started my visit at the famous Great Dome. I walked the perimeter of the building to focus on the architectural details and the names of influential scholars from history inscribed on each section. Inpsiring stuff. Then I went inside the building and walked East though its corridors until I was close to Main St. I exited near the Ray and Maria Stata Center—the famously odd-looking building, which was close to the subway station I needed to enter.

I also walked through MIT on Memorial Drive and Vassar St. I prefer the views from Memorial Dr. since you can see both MIT's buildings and the Charles River.

With these building visits and campus walk-throughs, I felt like I saw enough of MIT. I would only go back if I wanted to see a particular department or event at MIT.

Good place to visit for technical people

By NatashaT87 |

Doesn't have the prestige as other universities around it but a good place for my husband (an engineer) to go to say "I went to MIT".

Beautiful Campus!

By Fearless731688 |

It is a beautiful campus to wander around, and taking a guided tour to learn about the building's history (and maybe even see some of the labs) is highly worth it! The Charles River is right next to the campus with an excellent biking/walking path along the river, with plenty of benches to sit and watch the MIT sail boats go by.

A beautiful couple of hours!

By Antonella P |

We all know what a privilege it is to study at MIT, and what geniuses came from here.
It is really fascinating walking in those corridors, and peeping inside laboratoris and classrooms. Not to be missed!!!

A dream come true

By Lucio |

Make sure to follow the tours, because some of the buildings may look uninteresting or weird, but there is some interesting, sometimes even funny, stories behind them. This is one of the most important places in America, and you can just walk in and explore its campus, and maybe even classrooms, because there are some classes you can attend for free.

Worth seeing

Great visit

By msa23_2000 |

A caveat, I love visiting college campuses, I do it everywhere I travel. There are no shortage of colleges to visit in Boston and MIT is fantastic. Great architecture, friendly people, nice downtown area, and small campus to make it easy to navigate in a short amount of time. Might as well see where the great minds of bio tech are thinking

Awesome!

By pikatschu |

Didn't thought that the MIT would be that great.
I just fell in love with it.
They do have their own hairdresser and a lot of different food places.
The Shop is really big,too.
Just love it!

Very long tour

By theuncle2018 |

We signed up and took the official tour. It was way way way too long. First everyone sits in a small auditorium and we listened to a staff member talk for 1/2 hour in excruciating detail about the admissions process. Some random fast facts and 2 minutes of questions. This lady was totally self absorbed and could not read the audience that we were there to see the campus, not listen to her blab her head off.

So the tours were led by students. We saw most of the campus and it was 1.5 hours of listening to a college kid, all of his opinions and mostly the outside of buildings.

The tour was free, but at least one full hour too long.

The one best Institute of Technology in the world!

cool campus

By nielsmatter |

wide and green garden. chilly in summer. modern and fancy architecture. not too many tourists. calm and authentic.

Confusing Website

By ZenHealer7 |

We wanted to attend the campus tour and there was all kinds of conflicting nd confusing information on their web site and then when we arrived at the location. The web site in 2 different places said the tour would be at 2pm and 2,30pm and it ranged from 60 to 90 mins. When we arrived the sign said the tour would be at 3PM. We left and just walked around the building. Not as interesting as many other campus tours.

Fantastic Tour!

By Gene M |

We did the MIT guided tour after Harvard, hands down more informative! Ask for Austin as a tour guide, hillarious and took us behind the scenes into lecture halls and each department. Don't bring a stroller, lots of stairs. Well worth the $12. Great to get a feel of the culture and activity buzzing at MIT!

walk through the campus and admire the buildings

By sabi0james |

It is nice to have visited one of the world's best educational institution. Since, it is open, it is a good place to have a stroll. A walk to admire the buildings, the manicured lawns will amount to one relaxing walk. Some of the world's greatest minds were students here before and probably walked the same paths as I did.

American super famous universities

By Kimitaka Sho |

Along with Harvard, which is just around the corner, it is a very famous university not only in Boston but in all America. The large campus is lined with many school buildings, making it look like a school city. There are no school gates and tourists are free to enter the campus, so many people take photos.

Beautiful campus to visit !

By Capucine C |

Beautiful campus. You can walk around and enter in some buildings.

After the campus walk, enjoy the river and the view to the city which are really closed (4 minutes walking).

An inspirational place to visit for all ages, a must for teenagers !

By Yolyni |

Walking inside the MIT corridors, around the buildings, in the library is a very inspirational experience that is recommended for all ages but especially for teenagers. Around the campus plenty of bookstores and f+b offerings.

Great campus, everyone should see it.

By whatsitwerth |

Just park in the campus garage and ask where the underground Infinite Corridor is and you’ll be treated to an interesting walk. They have a good website and apps w maps and it’s really cool to stroll by the river and take in the Great Dome. Just neat to see the buildings, which are truly beautiful. They have an MIT museum. Don’t rely on me, look at their website and spend 2 hours on campus and you'll be able to take it all in.

Mens Et Manus

By Kingsley |

Each trip yields something new here on campus. Stop by the student center for food or take witness to the art structures surrounding the buildings. Most notably overlooking the Dome you'll find 'The Alchemist' structure. Once you walk across the busy street you'll have to take a stroll through the Dome's gigantic doors and lose yourself down the Infinite Corridor leading to Killian Court.

Grandson future school

By Jr G |

We only got to ride around but did visit the "Coop" bookstore and school store. Great folks, all very friendly .

It’s an okay campus

By Lin G |

The campus is just too big that you won’t know where to go. There is no information desk at student activity center. So I highly recommend you to download a map from MIT and follow that.

Dream College

By RitaLyC |

MIT has been my son’s dream college since he was in 1st grade. He has worked hard an this year his reward was to go see the campus, all he wanted to do this summer. Due to the pandemic there were no tours available but even just walking around campus was a dream come true for him. The campus is beautiful with lots of places to sit and relax: Adirondack chairs, hammocks, bench’s. There is plenty of art and nature to admire too. We love the Peace garden and the project it goes with. I should have let me son write this review as he has not stopped taking about MIT and absolutely loved it. Even if you don’t want to go to school here, it’s a great area and campus to walk around.

Beautiful and Fascinating Campus!

By Mary S |

Wow! The campus was much more beautiful and interesting than I expected. Along with the famous business and engineering schools, MIT has an excellent architecture school, and their campus is home to a number of very interesting and creative buildings by great modern architects including Frank Gehry and I.M. Pei. There's a non-denominational chapel which has no windows, but the light is reflected up into the cylindrical building from a moat. They have excellent athletic facilities including an ice rink. They also have many residence halls, each of which is different. For example, one is all singles, one (near the athletic facilities) houses mainly athletes, and two allow cats.... There is lots more, but I'll sum up by saying that I think the tour is definitely worthwhile!

The Original Campus built in the 1910's in the Neoclassical Style on the bucolic Charles River overlooking Boston, features the Great Dome - a beloved architectural structure frequently hacked by the student body into objects such as R2-D2, a beanie, a cop car rest stop, etc. Post War building were designed in the Scandinavian style by Eero Saarinen and Alvar Aalto and more recently by starchitects: Frank Gehry, I. M. Pei & Steven Holl. On campus are found artworks by Pablo Picasso, Henry Moore, Alexander Calder, Jacques Lipchitz, Auguste Rodin, Anish Kapoor, Louise Nevelson, Sol Lewitt, Frank Stella, among others. MIT the name is enough to visit. Visited twice or thrice but the attraction does not seem to less because it is worth to visit MIT. We visited MIT to celebrate our sons thesis submission for his PHD .we are lucky to be there. One must see this temple of learning and development

Biological Engineering started here!

By CambridgeGardener |

Cambridge is a mecca for biotech and pharma - startups, established companies, all kinds jostle for space in the insanely expensive real estate...and the Biological Engineering Department is a hub for translating discoveries into practical use. You hear about computer science...but the people who grow ears on the back of mice...and CRSPR stem cells...and figure out cures for cancer. THAT is the real MIT. A

(Better than harvard) Free and entertaining tour

By lakwatsera2014 |

Kudos to Michael, the nerdy, chatty and informative sophomore (physics major) tour guide.

2-hour walking tour started at 11am, along Massachusetts Ave (main building, across from student center).

Areas covered: student center, Chapel, gym/pool, main green, Dr. Seuss building, IM pei building, library. We ended at the cafeteria (cheapest place near kendall square). Throughout the guide included humorous trivia.

Architecture was modern (leave antiquities to Harvard). It was beastly hot midday, so walk along the shady areas.

Plan your day (we didn't) because parking by technology square was $25 for half day.

You must visit this place, unlike any other. I did, for 6 years.

By Sam S |

I met an old fraternity brother of mine at the main entrance at 77 Mass. Ave. for lunch last month. We are both MIT alumni from the 1970's who had not seen each other, much less the campus, in many years. It has changed a lot, but in some ways not at all.

We had lunch at the Student Center across the street from 77. The interior spaces have been repurposed several times, and now offer many more retail amenities than in my era. There are several good places to buy an informal lunch. You might have to wait for a table to eat it, though. The building still suffers from not having enough elevators, a problem that can't be fixed, but the energy and diversity of people in the Student Center and all over the campus are exciting.

My friend and I walked back across Mass Ave and explored the campus for a couple of hours, generally from west to east. The oldest buildings in the main complex are fundamentally the same, but several important changes have taken place. There is an information office just inside the entrance at 77, so stop there for a map to guide you around.

Many of the smaller classrooms and laboratories that used to be out of sight have been "fishbowled" with a glass partition along the hallway so you can watch the the proceedings inside. Often the chalkboards are filled with arcane equations that few people can recognize, much less understand. It's pretty much what you'd expect at M.I.T.

If you stay in the hallways I'm pretty sure you can wander through most of the buildings on the campus. Be sure to observe any signage you may encounter about restricted areas.

When you emerge on the eastern flank of the main complex of original M.I.T. buildings, walk around the open areas of the campus, back in the direction of Kendall Square. The buildings themselves are a major part of the tour experience, and you will eventually find new construction underway somewhere.

The architecture is varied and in many cases unconventional. The Stata Center with its twisted towers is about as weird as it gets, so be sure to take photos. You will find many interesting pieces of sculpture in the open spaces between buildings.

Contrary to what you might expect, many M.I.T. people are very approachable, and eager to suggest worthy checkpoints on your tour. We asked a small group of pedestrians to take our photo, and soon discovered we had faculty friends in common with them.

Do not underestimate the physical challenge of walking everywhere. The M.I.T. campus is larger than it seems. At my age it was a lot to handle. If you want to see everything, you may want to split your visit over two days. I believe that many areas are wheelchair accessible, but I wasn't very observant about that. You can probably find that information and much more on the school's website.

One major challenge will be finding parking near the campus, or navigating public transportation. On the day of my visit I got lucky and found an open metered space on Mass. Ave., but the odds are against that. Alternatively, you can take the MBTA Red Line subway to Kendall Square and walk west from there.

M.I.T. is unique among American institutions of higher education, neither Ivy League nor trade school. It is well worth your time to experience a visit.

Came to visit my father-in-law's alma mater

By 615WW |

One of the places we wanted to visit was MIT - my father-in-law's alma mater. He graduated in electronics engineering many, many years ago. From our hotel, we were able to take the Red Line subway to the Kendall/MIT station, located a couple of blocks from the campus. While on campus, we took the free shuttle bus which traveled around the perimeter of the campus just to get an overview. Then we walked around the campus, especially around the engineering faculty buildings.

Glad to be here

Nerd Heaven?

By Pyramidion |

MIT is not only world renowned, it is a beautiful campus running parallel to the Charles River, The Dome and the lush lawn in front which hosts the graduation exercises (and some M I T Hacks) are particularly impressive. Visit the "Infinite Corridor" a thousand foot interior walkway that connects several of the main offices and classroom buildings. It's a wow. We are an MIT family, and very proud of it. Oh yes, remember to visit the other school up the street.

What an imposing building

By Panathinaikos-13 |

Such a great University, such a great place. We were totally wet by the time we reached the University for a tour but unfortunately, when we finally found the enquiries desk we were told that due to spring brake there were no tours this week.
They should have more signs and inform visitors when the tours are available, like Harvand.

Take your own self-guided tour - about two hours

By BJDLondon |

This place abounds with fabulous buildings and wonderful art. Pick up the self-guided tour map from the information desk inside the main entrance and simply wander amongst the students for building to square to lecture theatre. Plenty of places to eat and good toilets.

So laid back and comfortable, easy access to Boston.

By IntenseMedia |

Just returned from a fabulous stay in Cambridge while visiting Boston. Just a short ten minute walk over the bridge into the Beacon Hill area. or hop on an inbound train and get into the heart of Boston in two stops. Loved the calmness over Harvard Square. Nice place to rest after a long day of shopping and taking in the sites. Beautiful views of the city lights at night, always felt safe and comfortable, easy access to the T.

MIT campus

By RollTideRollAZ |

Nice university with plenty of photo opportunities around a few blocks. Beautiful architecture and works of art. Friendly people, some food trucks.

Nice buildings

By Krishhere |

The institute has buildings on both sides of the Massachusetts Avenue. The big dome is the most distinguishing feature. It is only when we take a walk we understand how bid the campus is. The place certainly has an aura.

Drive by visit

By Sdwoo |

My teenage Son wanted to see MIT so we drove around on our way to Cambridge one morning. We stopped to get the photo of the dome from the road and it sparked a conversation and lesson on Roman numerals, which has been revived every time we see them on a building.

Visiting MIT

By Enamul13 |

William Rogers, LLD was the founder and the first president of MIT which was established in 1861. The institution still holds its position as one of the top universities around the world. Self guided maps are also available to tour around the campus

A dream come true

By Adrian B |

A dream come true to know the campus. One of the best universities in the world. Very nice place to walk and get inspired..!

Beautiful

By marieevedg |

We would have loved to have a guided tour of the campus. We got more info on MIT on our Charles Riverboat Tour.

The one.. and only!

By merlin2014 |

It's my alma mater so I am a bit biased :) The MIT campus is very unique and spread across about 100 acres.. all the buildings are numbered (as are the classrooms and just about everything; remember this is MIT :)). Building 2 with its infinite corridor is a must, as would be a stroll across the campus on memorial drive.

Parking is not easy, however. There are paid lots close by but not inexpensive

Study Marvel

By Sanjay B |

Marvelous Institute of Tecnology instead of Massachusetts Inst. its imparts knowledge in technology & science.its a dream fulfilled to study in MIT .they have main artistic building surrounded by other architectural buildings.you just have tour around and you will like it. Actually your hidden desire to study shoots up while seeing its different labs. Admission process professionally smooth with a good interaction with parents and students. They have heiarchy of technocrats who are now on a very good position with the satisfaction of wealth and status. I would like to study in such beautiful environment.

Cool campus

By Bob P |

Definitely worth taking a walk around campus - so much to see! I enjoyed the architecture and visited the labs.

Interesting visit to this famous University

By Serge M |

Impressive visit to MIT where you can go there and visit more or less everything you want. This is an interesting experience which gives you a good view on all topics studied there.
Recommend a stop there for an hour or so.

Nice atmosphere

By 32Morten |

This is a nice place to walk around. Architecture is nothing special, but the place has nice atmosphere.

Open campus

By Dan P |

MIT has a very open campus that crosses public streets with a compact foot print of buildings which makes it easy to get from one to the other.

The campus is best described as a long rectangle that would take no more than 20 minutes the walk the length and 5 minutes to walk the width.

The main building is domed and has a long hallway that runs the length of the building and is called the infinite corridor.

The buildings are usually open and good alternatives to walk thru when going across campus, especially in bad weather.

Amazing place

By Rosica G |

The best university in the world:). My son graduated this university..and I and my husband were 3 weeks in this amazing place:)

Great Institution, But Hard to "Find"

By tremm298 |

While not large in the State University sense, this remarkable school is an dynamic and exciting place that cane seen cold an apart. At the undergrad level closer circles of friends and departments can evolve, but is hard to see as a visitor. At the graduate and professional level, the place is much more accessible and courteous. To get a sense of the energy and intellect, visit the robotic museum (small, but fun) and try to tour the media labs. Wander the hall and hanging in the student center will feel like many other fine institutions.

Attractive Campus

By Knyte7 |

The MIT campus fronts on the Charles River. The campus is attractive with open spaces and interesting sculpture.

However, on a sunny and warm Summer day, the highlight is the view of the shiny Charles River and the sailboats skimming against the backdrop of Downtown Boston.

Great Campus tour

By Sally L |

Great campus tour. We went in many buildings including dorms and could tour a dorm room. Much more informative than other campus tours we have been on.

Drive By It?

By 777jmb |

Unless you’re attending the school the industrial scale and architecture of MIT can be difficult tour and even more difficult to enjoy. Just far enough from Central Square to feel removed from its restaurants and with its (great) view of the city a travel could easily end up asking his or her self “why did I come here” and then “why is my Uber taking so long”? I have no answer for the first question, but the answer to the second is that a rush hour MIT at Mass Ave has profoundly bad traffic jams (ie, you’re better off walking... that is, if you decide to visit at all, why not view the buildings from the other side of the river or passing by in an Uber from Harvard Square?).

Good science museum

By Maria S |

We visited the MIT museum with two teenage boys and spent between one and two hours here. There are some interesting exhibits and lots of interactive displays.

Killian Court

By fairlady75 |

First off, I may be a bit biased in my posting as I just attended my little sister's graduation on the 9th. She graduated with a Master's degree in Architecture, in which I'm sooo very proud of her! The campus is really nice. The graduation took place at Killian Court which was right across the Charles River. The set up was as they had to accommodate many! I heard there were over 2,000 grads! The ceremony was suppose to begin at 10AM, they began entry at 7:30 and it was over around 2:30! Super long. I found it funny that they didn't appear to have any rhyme nor reason as to the order events, my sister was almost last, but she was well worth the wait! We now have a new nick name for her, it's Mylin! Her name is Milan, like the city in Italy or the car! I'm like how in the world could you get that wrong and there were two other Milan's that I heard them call out of the thousands of graduates! I did think that it was rather nice that they had an information tent that was handing out free bottled water as we were baking in the direct sun outside. They had an ample amount of port-a potties as well. They were even serving food for purchase, that was a great addition!

I didn't do an entire campus tour as it was getting late and I was getting tired, that direct sun can tire you out, but we did go to the architecture area and that was really nice. The entire campus is bright and friendly and has everything centrally located that you could think of an need! QS ranks MIT the world’s top university for 2016-17 Ranked No. 1 for the fifth straight year...SO I GUESS IT'S NOT JUST ME THAT THINKS IT'S A GREAT SCHOOL! ; )

Dome

By Rajiv S |

Harward and MIT are must visit places especially from academic background people and who seek admissions in esteem institutions. Backyard with the river facing is more like a tourist spot than education.

Great walk for a Sunday evening

By Valentina H |

This is a must if you are in Boston! The campus is amazing and huge and is perfect for a family or couple walk in a Sunday evening.

Cool place

By Beth P |

We took a tour and learned a lot about the place. The engineering building was the coolest to see. Otherwise pretty sterile atmosphere compared to the asthetic charm of Harvard and it's greenways.

The postgrad guide walked backwards for the whole 2 hour tour - quirky but very MIT

By Philip L |

A genuinely quirky and very likable student led us walking backwards for the entire tour so that he could address the relatively small group (compare with the Harvard Tour). This was better, more informative and very interesting. How did the students get a police car on top of the dome and leave it with lights flashing without detection? Clearly MIT encourages individuality but this made it a very human place. I feel better for getting some insight and having visited.

Great and inspired place to be

By Chuck993723 |

Even if we think biotechnology, space or internet when you talk about MIT, when you arrive you feel history. Beautiful main historical building. Of course today MIT is extended all aroung on several blocks but this is the heart
You feel something is happening here. You go on the other side and you have a beautiful park.

Gorgeous campus filled with art

By Lisa P |

I strolled along the MIT campus to enjoy the city and was pleasantly surprised to find so much art. They had buildings that were open to the public to view displays as well as sculptures. It was a nice way to spend a couple of hours in the afternoon.

Good for a short visit in Boston

By MN8888 |

Another iconic university to visit in Boston
Lots of buildings to wander , street can be busy
I preferred Harvard to MIT..

Self-Guided Tour Available Online

By azbunnytracks2014 |

I had fun poking around campus, and I certainly got my exercise. Make sure to check out the Infinite Corridor!

Free tours!

By FlyAaron |

So many visitors to the area are looking to visit Harvard. Just a half hour by foot or 5 minutes by metro from Harvard is MIT. The architecture is modern, funky and a bit on the alternative side. The Office of Admissions provides a free tour at 10am and 2pm, Monday through Friday. You need to register online. https://institute-events.mit.edu/visit/tours

Alternatively, you can tour the campus on your own. There are free maps and self-guided tour information located outside the MIT Information Center located at 77 Massachusetts Ave. They also have an app you can download on iOS and Android. Search for "MIT Mobile" in your App Store. Free wifi is available around the university. Also...all the buildings, including the library at MIT are open to the public.

World class university in Cambridge, MA

By Rhett L |

If you're an engineer, this is a must see while in the Boston, MA area. Tons of large research buildings on a beautiful campus next to Charles River. Great place to run or walk. Lots to see and do and very busy during weekdays when students are attending classes.

Um…

By higherres |

If you want to hear the word “I’m” spoken every 5 seconds then ask for Jessica as your tour guide. She was fairly informative but mostly acoustically annoying. I couldn’t take another moment with her after 30 minutes.

Brainiac Central

By Fondue4two |

We had a personalized insider's tour of the campus so we had a chance to see the inside of many buildings and hear some details that you would never get on your own. Some pretty interesting architecture and some cool labs.

Not sure if MIT has a public tour but if they do I would take it.

Unusual college campus

By John Goodman |

This is not like many other. Some interesting buildings, a very different take on college, projects a sense of STEM power in the country.

One of my favorites

By HOCKPOOH |

MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) is one of the world's most prestigious universities. It has always been one of my favorite universities. I finally got to see it close up and was very impressed. The engineering building was really cool.

Great wifi in a cafeteria

After havard, we visited mit.
People here looks much more interesting and i loved the mood of this school.
Looks like funny and convienent.
And i love the couch in the cafeteria:)

Vibrant

By gtjrpj |

This is a very nice area and we love the building architecture. We drove by a couple times just to check it out. This school is in a nice area. Lots of students, buzzing around. Most of them looked happy.

Not too far from Harvard

By sitcharliesit |

This place was great to visit because it wasn’t that busy. We visited in late July which means hot weather. Inside there are some spaces where you can see and chill literally. The dome is great to see as it’s so iconic in movies. Lots of smart people here too.

Massive campus

By daviddD3505IR |

One subway stop short of the intimate campus of Harvard/Radcliffe is the humongous campus of MIT. In addition to the iconic domed building, there is the Sloan School of Management, and some funky looking buildings that bring to mind Disney Hall in Los Angeles. Construction all over the campus ruined what had promised to be a Superior experience. Spend some time on the walking/jogging/biking path beside the Charles River while you are there. Breath taking views of the Boston skylight will amaze you.

Great to see

By Tracy-Scott83 |

Took a wonder around the outside of the buildings, it was good to see this well known university.

Buildings look fab and got some great photos.

Good for a look to say that you’ve seen it

Love the Architecture

By fiamma11 |

I adore this campus. Innovative architecture for a cutting edge institution. Don't miss the Ray & Maria Stata Center designed by Frank Gehry. History and innovation both make this campus a well deserved tourist highlight.

Nice view of Boston

By TudelaMartins |

The campus is rather classic, and not very nice.
But the view of Boston and river Charles is worth the trip

A must when in Boston/Cambridge

By TraveltheWorld02140 |

This prestigious institution is fueled by brilliant minds and has fueled innovation - totally worth checking out! There is a mix of building styles from grand/traditional to utilitarian to quirky modernist. It's interesting to get a sense of being a student by walking around the campus.

MIT stands for... Millionaire in Training.

I think we all wish we were smart enough to go to MIT and get a degree then start our own firms, but alas this is not the cast for most of us. Still we can go out to the campus and have a look around it. It's really nice and one building looks like a space ship.

College visit

By workoutfoodie |

Great tour guide, top college; learned undergrad student housing guaranteed and lots of options for finding a living arrangement that works for all.

It’s MIT- overview of the tour

By Marco W |

Went on a prospective student tour to see the school, and it was very interesting. Their tour starts with an info session talking mainly about academics and the admissions process. The woman who led the presentation was very informative and friendly.

Afterwards, the people on the tour were split up and given a tour by a current MIT student. She talked more about campus life and had many stories associated with the architecture of the campus. She was very helpful when talking about things from personal experience and was very well informed.

It was clearly a tour meant for prospective students, and reservations are very highly recommended. If you aren’t looking at colleges or MIT specifically, the tour is only about half history and architecture so it might not be worth it to go on.

Amazing tour of the worlds best tech school

My boys and wife and I felt the tour was terrific and they both want to attend MIT now! check out the student union for some great MIT branded clothes and food at the end

Beautiful Campus

We did a tour here because we got a complementary ticket from doing the tour at Harvard. Very nice campus and cool projects that the students are building. Beautiful scenery of the Charles River and Downtown Boston.

Beautiful walk & visitor friendly campus

By Kasia’s Travel |

Impressive amount of art on campus made for a great walk. Some of the architecture is worth paying attention to as well. There is an interactive map available on line that will point you to things worth seeing. Street parking was difficult to find so we left the car in a reasonably priced lot.

When your traveling to Boston, MIT is one of the best places to look around especially if you have children who wants to take a free college tour. You will start with admission sessions at 10 am, then campus tour at 11am. You will be guided by knowledgeable students who will show you around the campus. The weird designed buildings of the Stata Center college of architecture is a landmark that your in MIT. If you have an opportunity to take lunch I recommend the tasty, healthy, vegetarian meal in Stata center. Don't also forget to visit the dome and if it is your interest to look around the college of advance material and science engineering where the latest technological marvel in science is happening you will just say something in awe!

Great Afternoon!

By OnTripsWeGo |

This is a fun place to go with visitors and with kids. There is a great display of ships and the kids always find the architecture and the open spaces fun.

Best of the best for STEM education and research

By dr2222 |

Prospective students--definitely check it out. Personally I think there is no better place for STEM innovation in the US.
Cambridge tourists--plenty of interesting things to see if you're in the area! Interesting architecture, the iconic dome, giant tetris on an east campus tower at night...

Surprised us!

By Shayna922 |

We took our 15 year old California grandsons to Boston and tours of Harvard and MIT for future college consideration. I expected to like Harvard more than MIT but it was the other way around. We all liked MIT! Even though it is a city campus, it feels like there is a cohesiveness to the campus. The landscaping is beautiful, with flowers, plants and trees mingling with the more modern buildings and sculptures. I even liked the modern sculptures, although I usually, am a traditionalist. Our student guide was very personable and engaging and the grandsons are now motivated to concentrate on their academics in high school!

Beautiful campus

By Sarasota F |

The architecture and grounds are not as impressive as Harvard, but very nice and worth seeing if you are in the area.

If You Like Architecture Surrounded by Brilliance

By SLRS5 |

It is a beautiful campus. The site, overlooking the Charles, can't be beat. Great for a picnic on the great lawn. But the real treat is the architecture and art all over campus. Some think that the chapel is one of the finest buildings in the US. Baker House (Aalto) was a breakthrough. Gehry and many other contemporary buildings. Sculpture outdoors. Indoor art.

Often see unusual things, unusual people.

Much nicer than its academic neighbor to the west (and I don't mean Lesley College ).

Best place to visit while in Boston!

By sanjay4 |

One can not think of completing the visit without roaming around in the most famous uni in the world!
One can relive student life if you have graduated from any uni anywhere!
What a place!

For tech lovers or respecters, you owe yourself to see where the microwave was invented, where many special materials and weapons that protect our country are conceptualized. Think rockets, nuclear fission and more. This special campus has fun sight seeing, a museum and lots of great places to eat next to some of tomorrow’s tech leaders. The media lab isn’t to shabby either. Definitely worth lunch and a stroll on your way to Harvard Square. Get off at Kendall and make your way towards Centrla square. Then after some food at one of the many eateries along the way, hop the redline towards Alwife to Harvard, just one stop up.

Tour Gave Insight into Student Life

By saritared42 |

Pros: My heart lifted when we got a tour guide who was a sophomore, a girl, and from the South: just a great way for my girls to imagine being students there, so that was a plus. The standard tour shows the outside of many buildings and the inside of some, and had great stories about MIT clubs, projects, dorm life, and hacks.

Cons: It's not like the campus is that pretty. But it was weird and fun.

Splash 2016 was fantastic!!

By Scubachick59 |

I took my daughter to MIT Splash 2016. What an incredible way for a high school student to experience a college! The program was well run and the campus was beautiful. Everyone was courteous and helpful. Definitely a much better way to check out a school as oppose to a regular campus visit.

Lovely grounds

By michaelaetaylor |

This is the type of place where you can just wonder and look at all the university has to offer. The buildings and grounds are beautiful.

Worth the trip

By Keith W |

My son is exploring colleges so we visited in June 2019. My wife loved her time at MIT so we both took in the tour and information session and explored on our own. Even though the weather was less than perfect there were many people around and we had a great time.

Get a guide. Must see for tech/innovation fans

By vaclean |

Great place, no doubt. Have somebody (or something) guide you, otherwise you miss too much. Get to the edges to find places like 700 Main Street (first real phone call, Polaroid camera, modern street cars) and much more. It's within the town of Cambridge, so restaurants, refreshments, etc. are plentiful all round.

Impressive Tour

By RagsKP94 |

We were very happy with the information session and tour. It was very easy to set up the tour online. You definitely need to plan ahead as they have limited space. The hour information session could have been condensed to 35 minutes, but otherwise was very helpful. The walking tour was more informative. The campus is beautiful with many unique buildings.

The only drawback was parking. I drove around for 20 minutes after dropping off the family. I ended up in a garage with no easily visible posted pricing. I paid $32 for 3 hours. Definitely try to park at a meter and give yourself time to find parking.

Interesting place to walk through

We were staying nearby and just wandered through MIT as we had the time. There were some very nice spring blooming trees scattered here and there. Lots of older buildings on the main campus. Mostly what you get a sense of is that there are many newer buildings sprawling outside the main campus that feed into industry and technology, quite vibrant.

Good University to visit once opened again for public

By Richard A |

We visited MIT last Nov 2021, even though it’s still not open yet for public. It’s a nice place, good university to visit once it’s opened again. The area surrounding is also good to explore.

Went to meet scientists and tour Picower institute.

Saw outstanding facilities, leading edge research, and met impressive faculty, staff and graduate students. As would be expected at MIT.

We liked Harvard better😬

Although the campus has pretty views overlooking the Charles we didn’t love the overall vibe. Without a doubt full of brilliant people, but it wasn’t what we had hoped.

Inspiring place!

Strolling around this inspiring place. Great! Open buildings, open atmosphere, people take pride in helping you around with directions.

Must go if you are an engineer!!!

By Karan Sharma |

Being a communication engineer, if was my dream to visit MIT which I was finally able to do on recent visit to US. The entrance to the visitor center is quite artistic and you can get a map of the complex with a suggestive tour of the major buildings/ departments that you can visit. The buildings are quite far from each other though and you may need more than half a day if you have to cover all. It is more like a town with walking streets and no boundary walls. Visit to one of the research labs is a must as you will see real life models of the work that is being carried out by students there.
