Lunch and ice cream. Great setting on the outdoor patio looking over the lake. Excellent ice cream. Grandchildren enjoyed.

I love this place, one of my favorite in the city. We visit it often, especially in the summer. Sometimes we park right at the ramp, the others we walk/bike all the way from picnic point. It's a nice scenic walk by the lake, and the sunset there is absolutely amazing! Never miss the ice cream and pizza! Plus the beer! You can never go wrong at the union, iconic spot for UW and the city of Madison!

We spent time at The Terrace earlier this week. What a great place. Music, food, drinks and a fabulous view. The Terrace sits along the Lake with fabulous views of the sailboats on the water.

Newly redone terrace on the lake front affords great entertainment and scenery. Very busy on Fridays and Saturdays in the summer, but food, drink and entertainment make it worth the crowds. Very eclectic mix of students, families and people of all sorts make for great conversations and people watching.

Memorial Union Terrace is the best place to unwind. Movies in the summer, boats, great beer...it's impossible to have a bad time here!

Here's the place to get the best ice cream in Wisconsin - at "The Daily Scoop"! Made at the University, a full selection of flavors along with a menu including brats, sweet corn, etc. all while watching the sailboats on Lake Mendota. Buy a membership and also enjoy great Wisconsin beers there, too!

The Terrace is a great place to have lunch on the shore of Lake Mendota. The menu is simple—brats, burgers, including a vegetarian option, chicken sandwich or a special—today was pork wings with a choice of sauces. Equally fun at the Terrace is to enjoy the ambience and watch people, a range of ages and many nationalities. Visiting the Union Terrace in the summer is a quintessential Madison thing to do!

We couldn't believe how lucky the city of Madison, and of course the students, are to have such a place. We went there for their fantastic ice cream and the view! We also just happened to go on Saturday night when Steely Dan was playing in concert at the Terrace! We sat there staring at the lake listening to Steely Dan all for the cost of a parking at their parking lot which was $3 for almost 3 hours!! Unbelievable!!!

You haven't been to Madison if you haven't sat on one of the iconic colorful metal chairs on the Union Terrace. It is a great place to go in the evenings to enjoy a brat, beer and some ice cream. Watch the boats go by and the sunset while enjoying live music (check the schedule). On the Fourth of July you can see 4-5 different fireworks shows happening around the lake. We regularly park in the Lake Street garage and walk a few blocks over to the terrace.

Enjoy the day by relaxing at the union terrace. Great place to people watch, view the lake and all its activities. Food is nearby and music different times of the day.

We were in town for a tournament on a very hot weekend. Perfect place to stop and get ice cream and dip our feet in the water to cool off while people watching and listening to the live music.

Really enjoyed the food, the people the music and the setting at the terrace. Our granddaughters really enjoyed feeding the ducks as well! BBQ was good and the brats were fabulous. Strongly suggest

Fun place to stop for a beer or ice cream. Fun for people watching or just hanging out with friends. This is a must when visiting Madison.

Beautiful location to stop and view downtown Madison and our beautiful lakes. Nice way to spend sometime outdoors with friends and family or just sit back and people watch.

Have been coming here for years when I'm able. Great place in the summer for s beer, some food, music or at times a movie with friends. I think you need a university ID to purchase beer.

Always a great place to take a walk and enjoy the lake view. The iconic terrace tables and chairs always bring a smile to my face.

Had a very pleasant walk along the shoreline. Loved watching the sailboats and paddleboarders. It is a very popular place and I can see why. Don't forget to get ice cream.

Time honored gathering place in Madison. You don't have to be a member to hang out at the Union. Summer brings great music in the evenings. Beer, simple food, free music and seating. And then there's those iconic chairs!

We had another great evening on the terrace. We always live the food and beer and of course the breeze of the water.

Great Lake views with brats, bar food etc.
But they should have more speakers for music to make it feel more like the past atmosphere. Needs to be more lively, even under current conditions.

Tragically understaffed food and beverage services. Waited in line for a half hour for a picture of beer. 20 min. for a simple sandwich and they got it wrong.

Morning, afternoon or night – there is honestly always something fun to do at the Terrace. With the new renovations that have been done this past year, it's really worth visiting, especially if you haven't been in a while. You can get a yummy brat, street corn, or the famous Babcock ice cream out by the waterfront...or listen to live music....or get a pitcher of the *finest* Wisconsin beer. It's just such a beautiful place to sit out with friends, grab a snack, and enjoy the nice weather. Definitely one of the most beautiful parts of UW's campus.
Expect busy crowds on the weekend; weekdays are much more tame. But there is plenty of seating so that you usually aren't able to find a place!

Stopped by here after a home football game and the place was BUSTLING. Tables looked pretty crowded so ended up sitting on the steps by the water which was great. Very lively and just a very cool location to sit and enjoy a beer or coffee.

Entertaining locale, but be sure to drive here – don’t try to bicycle. Screeching, angry guards sent me and my bicycle away, but there is plenty of cheap car parking under or adjacent too both student unions.
In general, this university firmly discourages cyclists (trails are often torn up) and pedestrians (roaring boulevards slice through the campus). Strictly cars only. Drive here or stay away.

Everything you need for a relaxing time is available. Food choices range from bratwurst to pizza. There is great Wisconsin ice cream, floats, shakes, sundaes and pretty much any sort of ice cream desert you can imagine. You can swim and there is a lifeguard on duty through the day. The water stretches out for miles and there are sail boats, power boats and wind surfers to watch. A great way to spend the day

Was there hundreds of times as a student at Wisconsin and many dozens of times since. It's not even thinkable not to go to the Union Terrace for at least some period any time we're in Madison. And if it's a summer night, that goes double. You can't not have fun.

We ran the half marathon and ended up at the terrace afterwards. It had plenty os seating and a great view. They even had live music there. Too bad we didn't get to see a sunset on this trip.

A great place to grab some ice cream, lounge with friends, and to view a sunset. There are many photo ops for those looking for a good insta post with a unique to Madison vibe.

Memorial Union is a nice place to visit, no matter the season. I have been in the winter when there was a Statue of Liberty on the ice giving you the impression that it was half submerged. Kind of cool. And when you visit in the summer, you can experience how popular this spot really is. The famous thing to do is to eat Wisconsin brats and then some ice cream. This August was a little bit crowded, however, the view of lake Mendota is so incredible I enjoyed anyway. It is definitely a place you will want to visit again if you don’t mind crowds of people.

If you're looking for a place to chill with friends/family that has easy access to food 'n drinks - - with a beautiful view of the lake, look no further. This place rocks!

Some of our family was in town that had never visited the Memorial Union. It was the Fourth of July and it did not disappoint. There was entertainment, fun people, great appetizers and of course good beer! Prices are typical of downtown Madison. The nachos were good, but you had to order two orders to get one with salsa and one with guacomola... we managed to eat them :).

The Terrace is a great place to visit especially during the summer. My wife and I usually go every year for the jazz fest. You have a great selection of beers and, of course, university ice cream. It has been recently updated to make it an even more enjoyable place to visit.

I love coming here. Even just to watch the sunset with a drink. It can get a bit busy and loud, but it's because it's a beautiful spot!

They serve a variety of food, and drinks all day that you can bring outside, with brats and burgers outside. It’s a especially nice at sunset. They also have bands on the weekends. You see lots of students, staff, couples, and families. We usually park at Helen C White Library across the street, or the State and Lake Street parking ramp which is about two blocks away. They have a few parking spaces next to the Union with handicapped parking available. In the winter you can eat inside.

A large group of us congregated there for lunch - I had a good black bean burger and wine. Of course there were lots of beer drinkers and I did share someones ear of corn. Then, being the good sport I am, I helped someone with their ice cream - yummy yummy! Great views and good college vibe

The Memorial Union Terrace is on the Northern flank of the UWMadison campus. Very close to Bascom Hill and the famous bridge from the 1986 classic movie "Back to School" staring Rodney Dangerfield.
The Union is very large with indoor and outdoor seating including multiple restaurants, adult beverage options and amazing views of Lake Mendota. There is often free entertainment on the weekends.
Pets are only allowed on the outer walkway between the outdoor seating area and the public use docks.
Definitely a place to stop on your trip to Madison!!

Love going here on Thursday and Friday nights during the summer. Great views of the lake, food and beer! People watching (and dogs!) is also a favorite thing to do!

A great place to sit and relax with friends, gazing at the lake and having a drink or something to eat.
No one hurries you to move on. Students nearby were working on assignments together with no food or drink in sight.
Apparently the metal chairs are iconic, sadly removed by students who covet them.
To get a drink you need to by a Wisconsin alumni or student but apparently you can buy a one days member card.
Food and drink are reasonably priced but sometimes a queue for drinks outside.

The terrace has entertainment (live bands or movies) several nights a week. Beautiful view of the lake. Plenty of tables or picnic tables right on the lake. Plenty of consessions to pick from. This is a must if traveling to Madison in the Summer.

Beautiful lake views, especially at sunset. Lots of food and drink options. Ice cream available but expensive. Indoor and outdoor seating.

Great place to read and relax on a summer's day. Beer is available but it's Wisconsin so that isn't surprising. Haven't encountered any obnoxious, vomiting drunks there which is more than I can say for most of State Street.

The Terrace is always a great place to end up on a weekend afternoon. Beautiful spot on the water with refreshments and food available for purchase.

Awesome public open air spot on campus to have a beer, chat, watch the boats and/or the people, enjoy the view & catch your breath for a bit.
The only negative is that parking must be impossible to find once a semester starts because even in July it was packed to the brim.

World class student area on Lake Mendota. Stunningly beautiful...especially evenings as you look west across Lake Mendota at the sunsets. Just redone. Even more special now.

No better place to be on any summer day or night! Perfect place to meet family and friends! Easy axcess
by car or boat, always have great music

If this existed at my college, I would have never gone to class. Great spot. Good beer. Good food. Good views.

On the shores of Lake Mendota, on the campus of UW. The place is full of people sunbathing, eating icecream, or canooing during the day. It is even more crowded at late evening.

The terrace has an amazing view of the lake! The prices for drinks and pitchers are very reasonable. This is easily a place you could sit all day and watch the boats go by. They also have music most days of the week.

Stopped at the Memorial Union Terrace last Sunday while out Christmas shopping on nearby State St. as we hadn't been to the Union since they finished all the renovations. I was impressed although I loved all of the old nooks and cranny's of the old old place and its dark and musty old charm what they did is beautiful and bright and inviting and we had some Babcock Hall ice cream and wandered and enjoyed all the new charm of the old place it is truly wonderful.

Great place for lunch, ice cream or a beer. Super view of lake and lots of spaces to stretch out and watch college life unfolding around you.

Food is great, but the atmosphere and view is beyond words. You simply cannot visit Madison without visiting this area. It is truly the cream of the crop for the true Madison, WI atmosphere. Make sure to make it a stop on your visit.

Great way to enjoy the view of the lake- grab a table and a pitcher of beer. Can buy cheap union food as well. Often there is live music Wednesday- Saturday during the summer.

The Memorial Union Terrace is one of my favorite places to go. The iconic chairs are welcoming, the lake is beautiful and the people are happy and lively. Whether you are there to catch a show or just to sit and have a beer and read, it is the perfect place to hang out on a beautiful summer afternoon or night. Even in the winter, you can catch the kite festival on the frozen lake. I will be back here many, many more times!

Wonderful place to visit and spend time at the Memorial Union Terrace, Enjoy the outdoors for beer, eating, relaxing, reading, Great place to spend time alone, with friends and family.

It's hard to beat the Memorial Union Terrace. I've been going there for years, and it has changed over time. Currently it can service the biggest crowds ever; don't be surprised at some 3000+ crowds on temperate Friday and Saturday nights during the school year. It is perhaps the nicest venue in the midwest when you note the lake in the background and ability to hear shows from boats. The walk along the lake, Babcock Hall ice cream, the Ratskellar - - it all adds up to a summer attraction that everyone will enjoy.

It's summer and sailboats skim across Lake Mendota. It's summer and the soft breezes caress your inner soul as you observe tomorrow, studying, relaxing, enjoying life while dreaming of tomorrow, where more men have proposed than anywhere else in Wisconsin and there is a definite reason why.

Finished a workshop, originally went down there to have some ice cream, but wound up getting wine to go and sitting on the terrace with a friend. I loved it. The lake was there, the weather was beautiful, but the best part about it was how many people were sitting there. They were either talking, laughing, playing cards, board games, having drinks, and just really having a great time. No one was buried in their cell phone. Everyone was interacting and it felt like a very happy, healthy community of people enjoying the outside. There are restaurants in the union, plus an ice cream place, several taverns, specialty beers. Great atmosphere.

We took a walking tour of the Capital Square and State Street. We had lunch on the Terrace. It was summer and watched the sail boats, kayakers and paddleboarders. It was a fabulous place to visit and tak a break from our tour.

If visiting Madison, Wisconsin, be sure to stop at the UW Memorial Union Terrace. You will find few, if any, major universities situated on a large lake. The memorial Student Union is right on the lake with great views. Relax and enjoy a beer or ice cream made at the University's dairy school. Sit down in comfort in one of the many colorful metal chairs provided for students and visitors alike. There is no charge to visit, sit, and enjoy the scenery.

The traditions lives on better than ever. From the classic Memorial Union terrace chairs to the craft brews, sausages, cheese, Babcock Hall ice cream and the great lake views. Ties in nicely with the new alumni center terrace project.

No visit to UW would be complete without a visit to the student union and its famous terrace. The terrace has unparalleled views of the lake and is jammed in the nice weather. There are wonderful plaques honoring famous graduates and detailing important events all around the grounds as well. It’s worth a look just for the views—-all else is a bonus.

Great location to view a beautiful sunset on Lake Mendota, take a mid-day break, lunch of take in the nightly entertainment. Plentiful beverage and food options.

Could sit here for hours! It is a great spot! There’s lots to eat and drink, only downside is that it’s usually really crowded. We had a hard time finding a table.

What a gathering place! Right on the lake, with food options, lots of tables and chairs, and sometimes live entertainment. Don't forget to try the locally made ice cream! Loved the Orange custard with chocolate chips.

You have the view of the lake and can spend a relaxing time with friends enjoying the wide choice of foods available and the famous Babcock ice-cream and a nice breeze if the weather is on your side the day you visit

On a warm Friday evening in July there is nothing better than hanging out on the terrace, in one of the iconic chairs, eating popcorn and drinking a good cold beer. They also had live music! If you want to really hear the music you need to sit closer to the stage. Also, take note that you are supposed to be a member to drink beer at Memorial Union. And don't forget to stop by in the afternoon for ice cream! It is so good.

The Memorial Union Terrace is one of the most unique things that sets the UW-Madison campus apart! The location and view right on Lake Mendota are unbeatable, you won't find anything just like it at any other campus. Even during the summer when most students are gone, there are a decent amount of the stations inside the union open (ice cream, brats, pub food, bars, + more).
We sat on the terrace on a few occasions. During morning/breakfast hours it is peaceful and serene, and at night it is a fun atmosphere to hang with family + friends.
Love how there are water activities available right next door.
Highly recommend!

it was hot when we were there and the place was full of half naked sexy guys so yes, we enjoyed hanging around there a lot!

There is nothing like it. On beautiful Lake Mendota. In the warm months expect families, students and people from everywhere in the world. There is musical entertainment, theater and film. Food is pretty good. If you don't like the food there you can walk a few blocks to lower State Street and find something that tickles your tummy.

This was always the best place to hang out when I attended Madison so many years ago. Things have not changed it seems. Perfect location on the lake, great brats, live music, and just the right touch to bring back old memories. During the summer, the docks are active and the balmy weather draws a crowd - just a fun time. The old Student Union is a classic hangout.

Memorial Union Terrace is a great place to visit t listen to some good music during the summer. There is ice cream, coffee, beer and food available. One of the best summer time places to visit.

After a hard fought game, a long day of sailing on Lake Mendota, finals, a long walk along the lakefront trail, or just because you want to kick back with friends and neighbors, there is no better place that the Terrace. With their signature chairs, the brat bar (brats, burgers, dogs, and veggie burgers with all the fixins), the beer wagon(s), music venue, swimming dock, and the adjacent Memorial Union, the Lake Mendota Terrace is a quintessential Madisonian's hangout.

If you are looking for a nice place to relax for a beer and snacks on the UW-Madison campus, this is the place. If you poll UW graduates and ask them for their favorite spot on campus, I believe 90% will say the Terrace. Positives are a congenial atmosphere, a good selection of beers, and grilled brats and burgers. Down side is the setting is outside and Madison winters are not a good time to visit the Terrace. Food choices are also not ourstanding.but on a nice day this is a must-see for visitors to the campus.

Recently redone, the Terrace boasts ample seating right on beautiful Lake Mendota. Get some Babcock ice cream, a hot dog or brat, and take some time to relax by the water.

Gorgeous place to sit out and look at the lake and the sailboats. Really lively student hangout. Grab a coffee and beer and find a seat!

Good beer, beautiful view, and excellent music. Who could ask for anything more! And, you can also grab Babcock ice cream!

I have come to this spot for decades and it only gets better. Good food, drinks and of course the environs- on the lack with music playing- perfection. This will always be a nostalgic spot for anyone who has come here in their travels or studies and continues to enchant.

Enjoyed the pizza and view-really great night! Great to be on the water and people watch. Pizza was really good

As usual, the Terrance environment was outstanding! We enjoyed craft beers while taking in the sun & gorgeous lake view.

I was there in August and it just happened to be move-in day on campus. There was plenty of activity everywhere in the area, but the memorial union terrace was full of people having a good time. Relaxing in the shade, getting a little sun, paddle boarding, boating, swimming or just hanging out.
Grab a craft beer from inside or the kiosks outside, have a bag of popcorn and just people watch and take in the scenery.
Even in the winter, there's always something to see and do here!

Lovely place to eat and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The food here is good and of course, we have to get the Babcock ice cream.

My wife and I were here for what I playfully called "Hippie Fest" but the real title was Conference on Madison in the 60's. Anyway the Terrace was the perfect place to lay back and enjoy life in the slow lane in beautiful Madison. Great music, brats, beer and a splendid view. Highly recommended.

The Memorial Union Terrace has been THE BEST place to just pull up a chair and chill since I was a student here. Excellent place for meeting friends or for making new friends. Grab a bratwurst inside at The Rathskeller and bring it outside to sit and enjoy views of the lake and a great campus. It's good to know that not everything has to change. Hope this place never does.

Iconic lakefront location. Sprawling terrace with abundant seating. Brats and beer are Wisconsin favorites. Dont forget to get some Babcock Hall ice cream - made on campus. Often live music!

Interesting to visit again after 55 years. Food good, brief visit to show grand kids this old landmark.

Incredible lake and beach view with multiple beers featured. The menu from adjoining restaurant looked great. A must see stop on your campus tour.

You will never be disappointed at the Terrace. Don’t miss this centuries old Madison lakeshore classic.

Enjoyed being at the Memorial Union for lunch! I spent some time there with my husband and daughter. It felt so good to be outside in the sun and with other people enjoying the beautiful day. The food is good too. Love looking out at the lake and seeing some boats on the water too. Need to do this again, and soon.

Went here with my 4K classroom and their parents for lunch and ice cream! Great patio and wonderful walking path! There is a lot for the kiddos to see and beer and food for the grown ups which makes it an all around great place to take the family!

A great place to hang by the water - great views and food and drink options. Lots of great boat and dog watching - live music during the summer months.

We always love to go.... any season. Brats, a beer in the sun or just to watch skaters when the lake is frozen
Careful of ice ..... sometimes slippery after a storm

Overcrowded and service is equivalent to an overcrowded fair, food is the same. Don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed.

Been here a few times for special events and have enjoyed being near the water. Good drinks and food

Nothing better than the terrace on a summer night! Bonus if there is live music or, even better, open mic! The only drawback is that everyone else feels the same way so parking and finding an open table can be tough on nice evenings!

Great views and live music during the summer! Also plenty of beer selections. Sometimes it's packed and hard to find seating but you can sit along the water and it's still a blast.

Very fun place to spend a few hours while in Madison. Great view of the lake and the patio has plenty of seating, food and drink choices. You can also "borrow" card and board games to enjoy with your friends or family while taking in the view. Biking and walking path leads to and from the Union. Best ice cream!

Perfect location, amazing building, a special place on earth. Part of what helps to make The University of Wisconsin-Madison so special.

This is a delightful place on Lake Mendota on the University of Wisconsin campus. Lots of good food, drinks, and people-watching to be had. Also, frequently live music happens in the same spot. It's been recently enlarged and improved to provide a better experience for visitors.

Having gone to school here, the Union has always been a favorite. Been there twice this year and saw a movie one night and was entertained by some great music the other. They now call it "Terrace after Dark". Great place to sit outside and enjoy a cold beer and their freshly popped popcorn or a scoop or 2 of Babcock ice cream on a waffle cone.

Summer and early fall, the union terrace is the place to be. Beers can be pricey and you’re supposed to present a uw id to buy them but you can’t beat the energy, live music, and beautiful view!

Nothing beats relaxing on the union terrace as the summer breeze meanders in from Lake Mendota. Love sharing pitchers of beer from the Rathskellar and listening/watching the Madtown denizens. The Terrace is a must see location on the UW campus.

We happened on this place while walking downtown area and campus. What a wonder student union location. Lots of seating with options of food and drink. Great views along the lake.

One of the best places in Madison in the summer!! If you haven't been GOOOOO now!! You can enjoy ice cream, beer and food by the water. They also have movie nights and live music.

You can't beat sitting at the Memorial Union on the shores of Lake Mendota. There's so much to see and fun to people watch. There's food and excellent ice cream. It just keeps getting better and better.

This is part of the University of Wisconsin's students' commons area. It is relaxing, fun, and the place to be seen after a Badger game. The restaurant has history and plenty of places to sit. Very scenic views of lake.

On a Saturday night, there were people of all ages enjoying themselves. A band was playing, kids were swimming, and we were eating Babcock Hall ice cream (yum!). It was THE place to be, apparently. Quite active.

I have been a lifelong fan of the Memorial Union! From going with my parents as a little girl for ice cream, to hanging inside and outside for countless hours during college, to bringing my own family for lunch, dinner, drinks (for the adults) and always the delicious Babcock hall ice cream. Truly, a very happy place for me and my family!!

Great spot with excellent views and a laid back feeling. Events going on pretty regularly. Nice beer selection and decent pricing too. No dogs allowed anywhere on the patio where beer is allowed.

We came for Babcock Ice Cream and the great view, but lingered to see the interesting displays in the adjacent park. They converted the old parking lot into a lovely place to highlight the accomplishments of noteworthy Wisconsin graduates. All the chairs look new. The entire area is spacious and clean. The University just keeps topping itself!

On a recent trip to Madison to visit my son, we went to the Terrace at UW twice. The place was slammed with people both times, but we managed to find a place to sit. The purpose of the first visit was to have a beer and watch the sun set. The views are stunning. the second time we went because I wanted to try Babcock's ice cream. That night happened to be movie night, which was a unique experience.

The view from the terrace is spectacular as any UW Grad knows. The beer selection is more than adequate and reasonably priced

How can you describe the soft breeze off the lake, the sailboats, and then people learning to sail board and paddle board? The many kinds of beer, the kids and the dogs and the students,a nd the alums? Good food, great beer, ice cream that can't be beat anywhere in the world. It is the place to be in Madison, Wi. But then I am biased as I was married in the union and the room looked out over the terrace. For most of us Madison, is the Memorial Union Terrace

Now it is better than ever. Food, drinks, music, lake views. You can't find a better spot to hang out in the summer time. It is sooooooooo cool. Great people watching.

You can eat here...fast food type restaurants, but we arrived on a Friday night after dinner and watched a free concert. People watching, beer drinking just a nice gathering area. I had some local made ice cream that was delicious. Right on the lake.

This is a beautiful and scenic place to visit. Beautiful view of Lake Mendota. You can lounge, walk around or rent a boat. We went inside, purchase the Babcock ice cream and sat outside to enjoy the view.

The iconic Terrace chairs, beer and view of the Lake are a Maduson tradition. If you're lucky, there'll be live music.

Always enjoyable hanging out at the Terrace soaking up the sun, listening to the boats and waves, and enjoying great company! I recommend this to everyone that comes to Madison!

We visited on a Sunday afternoon..it's lakefront and people enjoy sitting here, grabbing a bite to eat or some ice cream from the local creamery. Visitors were playng cards, visiting, reading, and enjoy watching the sailboats...we even saw someone getting engaged and celebrating with family!! You will love the terrace with its seating and relaxing atmosphere!

The Memorial Union is justly famous as a student magnet. Sit on the terrace, have a bratwurst and a beer, and watch the boats on Lake Mendota. (This may not be feasible in months when temperatures are below freezing....)

The Memorial Union Terrace is the best, most happening place in Madison. It's especially wonderful in the summer to hang out and sip a beer and hear some good music.

We were thrilled to see the Terrace open again this COVID summer. The reservation system is an extra step, but it works out great for planners like me. Once seated, it was great taking in the more subdued, but beautiful view of Lake Mendota while sitting in the classic Terrace chairs. Ordering through Grubhub worked well, and service was fast. Good beer selection, but the burgers were on par with school lunch. We’ll definitely head back this summer, but we’ll stick to cheese curds and beer.

A great place for people watching and enjoying a nice summer day. Good place to watch students enjoying the Madison scene and the water of Lake Mendota.

The University of Wisconsin in Madison boasts one of the most beautiful campuses of any university in the United States. Like Chicago has Lake Michigan, the University of Wisconsin has Lake Mendota--and the Memorial Union Terrace. Located at 800 Langdon Street, on the shore of Lake Mendota, on the university campus, it is a popular outdoor space that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. Located outside the Memorial Union, the student center that was opened in 1928, the Terrace is a stone dining and recreational area that is a popular gathering place for students and local residents for socializing because of the backdrop of the lake, with its view of sailboats and the sound of live music. The Wisconsin Union Directorate funds music on the Terrace four nights a week in the summer and on the Terrace or in Der Rathskeller on weekends during the school year. The Union features rooms and artworks reflecting the local heritage, the largest being Der Rathskeller, a German-style beer hall with elaborate murals where political debates and card or board games are common among students over a stein of beer. Other features are the Wisconsin Union Theater, the Paul Bunyan Room, Beefeater Room, Old Madison Room, restaurants, cafeterias, the Box Office that offers tickets for campus events, the Daily Scoop that sells locally made Babcock ice cream and the 1.3-acre Alumni Park that displays the accomplishments of Badgers throughout the 17 decades of the university.

This is my alma mater. We were here for a wedding and took our family to the Terrace where we met up with the wedding party after the rehearsal dinner. 30 of us slowly gathered tables and chairs until our whole group was together. Lots of beer options as well as non beer drinks. Pizza, pretzels, brats ets. It was a beautiful evening to sit out Issue with the crowd, overlooking Lake Mendota. And when we were done we were in the heart of campus, visited the bookstore and a couple old haunts on State St. love it

Continues to slurp up tax money from a society in economic collapse, but completely closed to everyone, public and students alike. Gee, I wonder where all that money goes...

Places to eat and be next to the lake and watch boats and people. When I started visiting UW for my son to attend, one of the first things locals would ask: "Have you sat outside at Memorial Union, yet?" Finally, on my third visit , I did. It is super relaxing during the late summer time with good weather and breezes. You can purchase an infamous Spotted Cow Beer that you can only find in Madison, i heard, it is not sold anywhere else. There are several places to purchase food or bring your own lunch and eat it here. It is really special feeling.

The Memorial Union Terrace is on Lake Mendota. The bands play on the terrace. Food and drink are offered and people can go into the Memorial Union itself if they like.

Beautiful on a nice late summer sunny day. Got a beer and sat and watched the boats on the lake. UW students are so lucky to have this!

Quiet, peaceful afternoons...energetic, soul-reviving evenings...
People watching, serene lake-side relaxation, concerts, food, beers, etc. Bucky Badger at his finest !!

A very nice place to relax and enjoy the view of Lake Mendota. An adjacent food court allows you to enjoy a snack or meal either indoor or outdoor. Live music may accompany your visit.

xox This is the only semester I am exchanging to UW-Madison and I love this place so much.
When I first visited the terrace three months ago, I has just got dumped by my ex and lost my phone. At the first glance of the terrace I could feel a remedy for me.
I love Ice cream with Union Utopia flavor! I badly love this name. And I love it that I got lost phone at the bus company!
I literally love everything here! And I love me here.

Who can resist Babcock ice cream and/or a brat with a lake view and good conversation? Stop at the Union Terrace when you're in Madison!

If you want to be a Badger you must visit The Terrace. The Terrace is a gathering place, a classroom, an ice cream parlor, a sun/swim spot, a study carrel, a concert venue, restaurant, boat dock, patio - one of the jewels of the University of Wisconsin campus. Enjoy conversations in many languages, spectacular lakeside sunsets, great food and great concerts. This is the major social center for anyone on campus-current students, visitors, and alumni. Don't miss the opportunity to sit in one of the iconic chairs and enjoy the beauty of Lake Mendota. Enjoy Babcock ice cream or one of Wisconsin's finest brews. Parking is challenging-use the Lake Street ramp. Bike racks are available. Metered parking is limited and it is easy to overstay your time as you are caught up in the magic of being a Badger.

There is no lovelier spot to sunset-gaze in Madison than this iconic patio. With food, beer, Babcock ice cream, the lake and water sports, and frequent live music, you'll be in good company. Great for people-watching, too.

It is a meeting point not only for students of Wisconsin university but for entire town. It offers good view of the lake and best to visit at sunset. Good fun for people of all age.

....should bother going to College, if they think they can find a better College socializing spot than this. If their discernment is so poor they believe there's better elsewhere, they shouldn't bother pursuing a degree at all.

Arrived in Madison for a work conference and was told I needed to find this place to watch the sunset. Amazing...how did students get so lucky to have a campus right on a beautiful lake?! Great seating, food and beer vendors, definitely one not to miss!

Great place right on the lake. It is our family go to place for music, beer, ice cream, fun food! Hanging out with family friends doesn't get much better than this...and they know how to do a great wedding too!

This has always been a great place to go. It has something for everyone. We have watched NCAA March Madness there, watched swimming there, boating, did some drinking and eating there, and people watched. Always something happening!! Free concerts too!! If you want a place to sit this is the place to do it in Madison!!!

Sit on the terrace, enjoy a beer and a brat, and top it off with the university's homemade ice-cream. The views of Lake Mendota are spectacular-- as is the people watching!

Relax, have a beer, chat with friends or just people watch. There is nothing like the UW-Madison experience!

What an amazing place! Not only a place to just chill, but it's also the hub of activity for UW. Whether you are inside watching a game on the big screen at Rathskeller's, or outside chatting with friends, it's a good time. You could meander at the architecture all day in this beautiful building. But, it's better to sit on the Terrace on a nice summer eve, grab some food, suds or ice cream, listen to the music play, look out onto the Lake, and just relax as the sun sets. Ahhhh....now that's what I'm talkin' about.

Went to the Union with my son and daughter-in-law on a beautiful summer day. A lot of people all very freindly. Found seats and just enjoy a few pitchers of beer and the weather. Could of stayed a couple of days but didn't have time. Will be back.

Attention to rehab detail impressive. Spent two consecutive beautiful late afternoons on the Terrace on Homecoming weekend. Very busy, but we were genuinely shocked and disappointed with how poorly prepared they were to cope with the crowds. Half hour plus lines for anything and everything. Seriously short handed across the board, could have easily doubled the staff, and they were running out of inventory. Management couldn’t see that coming? Should have made a better impression on the many alumni reliving their glory days.

Great place to meet people, just relax, drink a beer and watch the sunset. The Hoofers will be out on the lake sailing. The is live music, movies and the circus of life.

I have visited the Memorial Union Terrace many times and always experience something new and unique! They have many food options, including the BEST ice cream on campus. In the warmer months, you can sit out by the lake on the iconic patio chairs and enjoy some great food and drinks. Many nights they have live entertainment, too.

They have updated the outside with colorful chairs but left the "Rat" as it was some 50 years ago. Nice to see the old murals on the walls and the wooden tables. I spent quite a bit of time there! We had brats for lunch which were good!

I really appreciate a setting in which anybody can go, to socialize, hang by yourself, have some ice cream, wine, beer or a burger, listen to music or just sit. What a super nice feature for everybody as well as a beautiful setting with the lake!! A rare offering these days!
In the heat of the summer, the beating sun is a little difficult to take as there is no shade in much of the seating area and parking can be a challenge. Just making mention for those who are considering going & require shade & to plan for parking.
But THANK YOU for keeping this place accessible for all!!!!

Nice place worth visiting.
The water smells of fermented herbs but the view is very nice.
Take a beer and an hamburger.

While the renovation looks great, too much change can be counter productive. The ability to reserve a table w/ the iconic chairs disallows the causal traveler to just stop by and plop down. Buying a beer also comes w/ the risk of being turned away if not w/ a Union member. There is inconsistency in this process of checking so who knows. Otherwise, if you don't mind sitting on stairs or retaining walls, it's a great spot for nature and people watching.

Great spot in Madison for casual eats. Lots to see, dogs welcome, friendly staff. We had a pitcher of IPA and smokies at a picnic table on the water with our dogs. Great way to spend a few hours with friends.

It was a bit tricky to find for us out of towners but just stop in any store near the campus and they will direct you. Had no trouble parking at a public parking garage which was pretty cheap for a few hours. The Terrace is so pretty with its bright tables and chairs overlooking the lake. There is plenty of seating and we had no trouble grabbing a spot. Outside is a beer and meat place, while inside are other eateries along with the restrooms. While there a live band was preparing to play in the bandshell. We waited from 6:30 till 9 and all we heard pretty much was them doing checks so that was a bit disappointing - unsure what time they actually start as we finally left. However, we were there for the sun setting which made the water with the sailboats, kayaks and all looking like a faded pretty water color painting. There were people of all sorts, students, families, characters - you name it. Seemed safe and you can sit as long as you'd like. This Penn Stater has to give the U of Wisconsin props for a beautiful campus and their Union Terrace!

One of my favorite hang-outs in Madison, the Memorial Union Terrace is a Madison must. Great place to hang in the summertime with a beer and a pizza or popcorn and meet up with friends.

We like the atmosphere and setting. We try to spend time here as often as possible. The mix of college students and general public is perfect. Oh yeah the food is also great.

Great place to visit in the summer. Loved listening to the live music and having an amazing view while having a few drinks.

I visited alone but this would be a great place to come with family, friends, a partner, kids - I saw people of all ages hanging out. Note: I was visiting in July so I'm not sure if that changes when school is in session.
I couldn't get enough of the lake and sunset view from the Terrace and the fun yet relaxed vibe - I visited on my first night in Madison and ended up visiting every evening. There are lots of vendors for food and beer, and the ice cream is some of the best I've ever had.

Beautiful night. Great ice cream and beer, but long lines to get served. Nice amount of seating. All ages, families and students in the mix.

Quite possibly the best student union in the United States. The terrance looking out on Lake Mendota is unbelievable. Also, this is more than a student Union, This is where students, alumni, and Madisonians come on a regular basis.

The views of Lake Mendota are amazing. Come sit in the iconic terrace chairs, sip on a Wisconsin beer, and eat a brat while listening to live music. The terrace is THE BEST.

This is a great place to meet friends, grab a beer/brat and enjoy the lake view! they have an outdoor music venue as well. You just can't beat a visit to the Memorial Union terrace!

Union Terrace is where it is at in Madtown. People watching, beautiful views, cool breezes, and delicious ice cream. Make an afternoon of it.

Met with friends for morning coffee. The Terrace was not busy at that early hour. We enjoyed chatting and looking out over the beautiful lake. A gorgeous location with several dining choices for lunch and dinner.

Great place to chill before scheduled event.Waterfront/peeps/food soo good. Took in local papers/relaxed

Memorial Union Terrace is located along the lake. A beautiful view! There is stage and often free bands to listen to. Schedules are posted online about upcoming events. The famous sunflower chairs are iconic here. Everyone needs to sit in one at least once in their lifetime! Food as well as beer can be purchased here. I come down here to play cribbage with a friend some times. So much fun!

Spacious, beautiful and colorful terrace right in front of Lake Mendota. It can get busy after business hours, especially in spring and summer, but it is definitely worth it. Grab a beer (or your favorite beverage), watch the sunset and enjoy some live music (if present). Amazing. It'll likely be one of the places in Madison that I'll miss the most.

It is so great. Music, food, fun, water sports, Bucky, They have everything from ice cream to sweatshirts. The View Is Amazing!

The Memorial Union Terrace is a destination for not only UW-Madison students, but also for visitors and city residents. It sits on beautiful Lake Mendota where you can have a beer and pick up a light meal. You should be aware that you are suppose to be a student, university employee, or a paid member of Memorial Union to order food and beverages. However, this rule is often not enforced. If you are turned away from ordering, you can still sit and enjoy the sights or watch sports games or movies or listen to the live music that is often there. You may be able to get a UW student to order for you.

we went because we had a bunch of teens and 20 year olds, went for ice cream stayed and stayed for the people watching and the peacefulness of the lake. I grew up going, but it's new to our kids, fun to share our stories.

Good place to hang out and have a cup of coffee . Nice weather would help. Just watching people sail and in some cases trying to sail was very amusing. Seating was comfortable. Would recommend this to be the last stop in a Madison trip.

I came to town to see family, and landed on the terrace one beautiful summer, Monday eve. Invited a southern friend who had never been....amazing evening. Cold pitchers of Spotted Cow, excellent pizzas to share. Southern friend was so excited to have experienced a local favorite. It never gets old #OnWisconsin!

The Terrace is as beautiful today as it was when I roamed the University over 35 years ago. What a great place to share a pitcher of Wisconsin's finest brews while watching sale boats skip across the beautiful waters of Lake Mendota.

Great place to hang out with scenic views of the lake. The bratwurst and beer make it even better. I dont think it will be occupied when its freezing and snowing outside but when it isn't this place is great!

Enjoy a cold beer on a cool summer night on the Terrace-a Wisconsin tradition. Usually there is a band playing on a weekend night.

They curate great music on the weekends, for free. There are beer sales, as well as food. Astonishingly devoid of mosquitoes.

I never thought I would see a college campus place serving beer, but here we are. That's Wisconsin for you! It's on the lake with great food from brats to ice cream.

I graduated from college, as an out-of state student, 51 years ago! much has changed, but the terrace atmosphere feels much the same. It is a gorgeous view from sitting there and looking out at the lake, or from a boat looking at its shore. The weather was perfect that day, and it reminded me why I chose Madison, those many years ago.

The union has finished its renovation, and construction at the Alumni Park next door will soon be finished as well. Lots of food options, good coffee place, fun people-watching on the terrace. On a summer's day, a quiet place. Fun to watch the sailing classes take off.

The Memorial Union Terrace is a unique place within a unique city. It's a place where not just students congregate but also visitors. Located within easy walk of the university's Rathskeller, one may order a meal from a number of locations before heading over to the terrace. And a good meal isn't the only reason to head to this Madison jewel. There's a reason why students and townspeople alike make this their destination with darkness pending. The sunsets from this area are simply spellbinding and coupled with the bustle of activity and music filling the air make for a wonderful experience. Helping make the even special is the co-mingling of students with those new to the terrace. Nearby, vendors offer a veritable feast with a variety of food options helping to create an experience for sight and taste.

The water is the main attraction. People watching a close second. The view is just incredible. Worth checking out.

We visited the Union and patio on the recommendation of our neighbor, a Wisconsin alum. What a great setting to grab a coffee, beer or other beverage and enjoy the view of the lake. The Union also has a couple restaurants and a small market. Parking was not a problem. Definitely worth a visit if on or near campus!

What a lovely place to enjoy a nice afternoon with friends or family, with an spectacular view of the lake

The title should be enough of a lure to visit the Memorial Union Terrace. The summer activity always creates a lively crowd from midmorning until midnight. It's a great place to chill by the lake, grab an ice cream with the kids, listen to some late night music sharing a pitcher of beer with good friends.
Took the family to the first weekend of Jazzfest a couple weeks ago. Our 6 and 8 year old girls wanted to go back again the next weekend to listen to more music (though they may have just tricked us into getting more ice cream and staying up late...oh well :).

The best time to go is when the weather is good.. The is a number one spot you must go to when visiting Madison. The beer is always cold and the view amazing!

Visited on an afternoon with live music. All ages in attendance. Food and beverage lines moved pretty rapidly and the ice cream was worth a visit on its own!
A fabulous view of the lake and the city—and hop on the Lakeshore trail for a walk or bike ride (rentals available) to extend the experience.

The Memorial Union Terrace overlooks the lake, a fine locale indeed. Sip a beer, have a taste of the garden variety lunch foods, hot dogs, etc., and just take in the view.

Hands down the best place to have a cold beer watch the sunset and listen to live music with a nice selection of food... a bit over priced but still good!

This is a beautiful place. The upgrades have proven to be exceptional. If you are passing through or live here do yourself a favor and take a visit and enjoy! Live music and the lake is not to be missed.

The best place to enjoy the views of Lake Mendota while enjoying a cold beer and music. Simply love this place!

This is a great spot to hang out and enjoy the weather, the beautiful lake, and people (and dog) watch. We visited on a Saturday late afternoon and the place was packed. It was difficult to find parking, but we finally located a spot and walked to the terrace. It is just a lovely and large area with ample space to sit and enjoy the day and do some great people watching, too! Lots of folks had their dogs, and all were on leashes and well behaved. It was great fun to grab a drink and a snack and a table, and just talk and enjoy the environment. Not the place to go if you don't like crowds, as it was very crowded, but that made it all the more fun for us.

Last Thursday we had an out of town guest, who was visiting Madison, for the very first time. She was here for the "Madison Reunion" a time for looking back at the 60's. We decided to spend the evening on the Memorial Union Terrace. Lou and Peter Berryman were giving a concert followed by VO5… a band playing 60's music. It was a gorgeous setting! People were eating, drinking, visiting with friends, old and new, and LOVING the music and sunset over the lake. Our friend had a terrific time and wishes she lived here. The Terrace is a special place to take guests from out of town, or to get together with old friends. Whether you are young, old or somewhere in between, you'll feel happy, welcome, and right at home at the Memorial Union Terrace!!

The brightly colored chairs and tables is very cheerful. People of all ages were here, there were plenty of places to sit in the sun or shade. We had perfect weather to sit by the water and enjoy the afternoon. Beer and brats were available for purchase. There were several other places to grab a bite to eat inside also. Very nice, everyone was friendly.

Nice lake view, great aise cream, beer, leave music. Fantastic restaurant interior. Best season for visiting spring, summer and autumn!

The terrace at Memorial Union is a wonderful place to be! Sitting right on the lake, the atmosphere is almost unbeatable for a Midwestern college. The ample and varied seating along the waterfront make it a no brainer to stop here for whatever reason! I had a bit of time between my last meeting and my flight on a summer weekday afternoon, so I was fortunate enough to be able to grab a covered seat on the second story of the deck, set up my computer....and, yes, grab a beer from the adjacent bar to enjoy! (after becoming a guest one-day alumni association member!). This was an absolutely perfect environment to relax while still getting work done.

I visit family in Madison several times a year and always make sure to stop by Memorial Union Terrace on the shore of Lake Mendota. We pull right up to the pier and dock our boat (free). There are a number of outdoor food establishments as well as indoors, which have expanded with recent renovations. The brat stand is a must, as is the University-made ice cream at the Daily Scoop. The view of the lake is amazing and kids love climbing onto the giant chair. There are many tables so even when crowded there's usually a place to sit, especially off-season (summer).

Do not order a dish ! buy a cone and throw away part of it if you have to..... if you ask for a dish you get a squishy little thing and the ice cream melts over the side and down your arm ! This never used to happen. I can't imagine that these plastic "disks" are better for the environment than the little cardboard cups they used to use. I almost never write negative reviews unless its something like this, that would give a negative opinion to tourists visiting.Sorry, I love the Union!

The UW Madison student union backs onto Lake Mendota, and in nice weather, you can sit out on the concrete Terrace, grab food and drink, and watch the sailboats float by. Prices are reasonable. Babcock premium ice cream (made at UW) is available inside the building -- don't miss that treat!

This place has been a UW hangout for 50+ years. It's awesome! Babcock Hall homemade ice cream, beers, and if you're there in summer, you can enjoy a beer or soda on the huge patio by the lake. Lovely!

A UW-Madison campus gem. The Memorial Union has had a recent facelift. With or without the facelift it’s a great place. Be sure to have some Babcock ice cream - it’s delicious. There are cafeterias, a coffee bar, lots of places to hang out, murals, marble, a great view of Lake Mendoza, and a Terrace like no other. Music, food, people watching. What could be finer?

This is the spot to visit during evenings, nice live bands, good beer and a great sunset. If its hot they even have a place to take a nice swim in the lake... awesome times!!!

Babcock hall ice cream, Lake Mendota sparkling in the sun , what's not to like? I don't think I appreciated it as much decades ago when I was a student, but it certainly was a wonderful place to visit after a long absence.

Be prepared for crowds. We went for Babcock ice cream, which was worth the long wait in line. But be forewarned, parking is at a premium and the place is very crowded on the weekends.

Always a stop on our visit to Madison. Great view, great patio. Often there is music. All ages - students, families, couples, retirees - have a good time here. Great community vibe. Beer, brats, ice cream. Best way to spend a sunny afternoon.

This was my favorite spot from our weekend in Madison. You feel like you are in another country. All ages were there. Tons of seating, food options, drink options, and great views. Must see when in Madison.

The University of Wisconsin is an amazing school, there is no doubt about that. They built their student union on the lake shore and this is a nice patio overlooking the lake. You can order a beer, yes they serve beer, and grab a table and relax overlooking the lake. It is not the nicest student union in the world, but it is a nice campus experience. If you are in the area, stop by.

Summer or winter, this place is magical. We enjoy it the most in the summer when it is quieter and you can feed the ducks. but on a cold quiet day, there is still so much peace to breathe in. You may have to wait for a table in the summer but it's worth it to enjoy your meal or some of the best (and cheapest) ice cream anywhere. Chairs are a little uncomfy - but still worth it to be there.

Memoria Union Terrace is mostly known for its iconic chairs of different colors - they live their own life now, with people collecting them, painters picturing them etc. I uploaded a picture of the chair that is actually inside the Memorial Union - a piece of art commemorating chairs!

in addition and in the evenings they have entertainment live in outside great bands beer people everywhere a place to see and be seen

What better way to relax with a cold beverage, Music, and a beautiful sunset!!! Located in the heart of UW-Madison campus..... Food choices could be better but still ok, Babcock Ice Cream available!!!

I love the terrace. Great food. Lovely scenery. It's fun to watch the rowing team practice. The people watching is fun too!

Wow, a colleague and I had heard a lot about this place while we were in town for a conference and decided to check it out. We had no idea it was actually the student union. Right on the lake, with restaurants galore, it was PACKED on a Wednesday night. Everyone was laughing, people were on the lake boating, and someone even started to sing at the stage they have available. We considered doing some paddle boarding, but the water was awful choppy. We walked around campus a bit, and headed back to the hotel. Great experience!!

Went to the Union on a cloudy cooler day and at end of our two hr stay sun came out. Family wanted authentic Wisconsin fare - beers and brats and corn on the cob. They loved it! Thanks Union Terrace for never disappointing!

The views of the lake and the great music made for a festive time. It was an awesome experience that we hope to take in again

The place to see and be seen. But you have to be a Union member or know someone who is. Grab a table on the terrace, enjoy the views of Lake Mendota, consume beer in copious quantities, and food from any of the Union restaurants. No better way to spend a day.

Nicest place in Madison when he weather isn’t freezing. Awesome ice cream and cheese curds. Plenty of outdoor seating to chill and have some pitchers of spotted. Best view of the lake and everything. Great vibes

I love the terrace. It’s beautiful, within walking distance of the capital, open to everyone and there’s always something going on. The Babcock ice cream is incredible and the terrace chairs are fun and bright. It’s a great place to relax with friends and family. Great local beers, brats and other pub foods. Lots of outdoor movies and concerts in the summer. I can’t say enough about this special place.

Full disclosure, I am from Madison, attended UW many years ago, so have been to the Union countless times. Their recent upgrades means you have more choices for food and more options for seating out on the terrace, which sits along the shires of Lake Mendota. In addition to the frequent live music in summer, this is a very family friendly place for strolling along the Lakeshore path. Amazing sunsets, many docks to view the water more close up, and a wonderful place for many ages. Highly recommended: the cheese curds (deep fried) from the rathskeller.

Anyone who has truly visited Madison will know where you are from a photo of you in the Memorial Terrace chairs. So much fun! Check their event schedule, too. They often have live music, movie nights and other events. Beautiful to look out over the lake. Be sure to have some ice cream while you are there, too!

Enjoyed relaxing on the terrace on a Friday night with a beer and watching the boats on the lake and the sunset. Went back on Saturday afternoon because we enjoyed it so much the night before.

It is a classic Madison Experience to find a colored chair, buy a brat and beer and visit with friends at the Memorial Union Terrace overlooking Lake Mendota. The Babcock ice cream is not to be missed. Warm summer evenings are magical on the Terrace. Sunday morning with the New York Times and a cup of coffee. Choose your time and beverage and enjoy the ambience of this typical Madison experience

The UW Memorial Union Terrace is the "back yard" of Memorial Union, but is so unique it is a destination in itself. Of all the campuses I've visited, none come close to the Terrace as a welcoming venue for the entire community. It's not unusual to see families with young children and groups of older adults sitting side-by-side with students who are taking a break from their studies. The Terrace is a revered lakeside attraction and a community treasure.
Given its location on the shore of Lake Mendota, the Terrace is the perfect place to read, converse with friends, or watch sailboats on the lake. Throughout the summer there are free movies and music but my favorite times are the quieter times when I can simply enjoy the view and the people. Wi-fi is available to UW students and to members of Memorial Union, as well as to students and faculty from other campuses nationwide via Eduroam.
I don't consider the Terrace to be a dining venue. You can purchase popcorn or ice cream inside the Union, and there are other food options but none are outstanding. During the summer they sell bratwurst at an outdoor stand but the brats are pre-cooked and wrapped in foil to stay warm, and are always a bit disappointing. However, unlike most student unions, they DO sell beer and wine both indoors and on the Terrace. Alumni or community members should purchase a Memorial Union membership to buy alcohol (you don't need membership to hang out on the Terrace but bartenders are increasingly checking for membership before they'll serve you alcohol).
But because the ambiance is so wonderful and the view is so spectacular, drinking is not the primary purpose to come here. In all the years I've been going to the Terrace I've never seen a problem due to drinking. Stop by for some ice cream, sit for a while to enjoy the lake, and appreciate this beautiful and unique setting where campus and community come together.

We had great fun at this location looking at the lake and enjoying some food! We had a smattering of choices and our table took advantage from brats, pizza, icecream, and beer. In addition we enjoyed walking along the lake and watching the boating and wind sailing going on!

The Terrace is part of the University of Wisconsin Student Union and sits between the Union, it's famous Rathskeller, and the shore of Lake Mendota. This is the best place in town to hang out with friends and grab a bite to eat. The food is not fancy but always good. You can grab a beer and bratwurst, an early morning breakfast or just a cone or dish of the famous ice cream made right on campus in Babcock Hall. If the weather doesn't cooperate you can still visit and sit in the Union's Rathskeller or in the cafeteria and enjoy the view. This is still the best view in Madison overlooking the lake and the same good food is available from the food court or the Rathskellar's cafe. A visit to Madison, campus visitors or local residents should include a visit to the Union. It is much more than food, with a fine theater, a small hotel, and of course, the place to meet up with friends.

We came in the late afternoon for ice cream and to sit by the lake. In the evening we returned for pizza. What a wonderful atmosphere. Made me want to be young and attending university there!

The Terrace behind Memorial Union is on the shore of beautiful Lake Mendota. It combines that natural beauty with the excitement of being at a student and alumni hangout on the UW campus. Naturally, this is a mild weather place. We have been there dozens of times over the years. It is a great place to relax, have a beer or two, maybe eat a lunch (brats and burgers sold outside and many more options if you order at one of several eating places inside), and just unwind. And don't forget the delicious Babcock Hall ice cream, made on campus, and sold both inside the Union and, during warm weather, outside on the Terrace. Our whole family loves this place.

Great place to go to enjoy Babcock ice cream, explore the water front, photo op with the oversize terrace chairs, and the kids had fun climbing on the Bucky statue near the Red Gym.

The memorial union is a great place to hang out and have food and drinks. They have live music on the weekends.

The Terrace is part of the University of Wisconsin Student Union Building and the entire building is awesome. Inside, among other places to eat, there is a German Rathskeller and outside there is the Terrace which goes down to the lake. Sitting outside having some food and drink, chatting, people watching and looking at all the boats and windsurfers is so relaxing. The University has boats and windsurfers for rent and there are paths along the lake if you want to walk for a bit. There are lots of evening events there too. It's the perfect place to hang out and veg for a bit.

We went there for the free music and the laid back atmosphere and ended up enjoying the absolute best pizza ! It was an incredible evening as they all tend to be in the Terrace ! Whether you eat or just sit around playing cards with your friends all night ! Every nights a great night for euchre on the Terrace.

My husband and I visited in the summer at sunset with our two daughters (ages 2 and 4). Food and drinks were cheap, and it was nice place to sit, enjoy the lake view, people watch, and let our girls run around. Interesting mix of people - it's not all college students as you might expect being on a college campus. Parking was easy in the garage next to the Union, and the place was stroller-friendly. Unique atmosphere - our alma mater did not border a lake and did not have a big social hang-out on campus.

Missing the old, but the new is good. Great choices for dining. Happy to see the Rathskeller still there. Hope the essence will remain......glass and chrome sometimes clash with the old stone.

Fun place to go and watch sun worshipping and sailboats. They were setting up for the live music. Cold beer and brats.

...to waste a sunny Saturday or Sunday afternoon than with your significant other, a pitcher of beer, and simply watching people pass by on the Terrace. Doesn't get much better than this.

The union is great in the summer. I enjoy going on weekend nights to enjoy live outdoor music. There is also a good variety of food vendors and drink selections.

Love always coming here when visiting the college student, and any other time we are in Madison in the summer. I love that they have champagne! The food offerings and entertainment are great, it gets very busy. The view and ambiance are so fun!

Great place to visit. Lots of things to do. Lots of people watching. We had a very enjoyable day lakefront.

This iconic place is so wonderful in the summe r- the chair are legendary and the view is a million dollar!

We were walking around downtown Madison and decided to walk over to the lake, where we stumbled upon this terrace area. There are a lot of great food/drink options (really enjoyed the Rathskellar) and comfortable seating makes it a nice place to spend a bit of time while in town.

The Union has been renovated since a previous visit. The colorful chairs are worth seeing. It is a great place to relax and enjoy the view.

We found a shady spot on the Terrace to listen to live music - a band of kids, probably something like School of Rock. People were enjoying themselves all over... with drinks, ice cream, food, sunbathing, boats, and good times on a lovely summer day.

This is the place to relax and enjoy gorgeous sunsets, breath_taking lake views, live music and a young lively crowd. Everything else is just a bonus.

Grab a chair, relax, and just chill. The view is one of the best in Madison. Great place for dogs, kids, students, seniors, and anyone else who just wants to slow down and enjoy life for a while.

Memorial Union Terrace on UW-Madison's campus and Lake Mendota is Madison at its best, a place for everyone to relax and enjoy the views, visit with family and friends, have a brat, beer and ice cream.

We spent about 2 hours on the Terrace. It was a cloudy/rainy day, but the crowd was friendly. We were able to get a table on the Terrace under an overhang. It was fun to have our picture taken on one of the tall chairs. The ice cream cone was top notch. Great place to "hang out"! The lake view is spectacular!

Enjoy local craft beers on a summer evening and listen to live bands. Food also available on the Terrace and in the adjacent Union building. Crowded on nice weekend nights, so consider another time if you want a quieter venue. Also, must (n theory) be Memorial Union member to buy beer.

We came here after dinner to grab some ice cream and hangout. It's very nice by the water. But people being people they are rude and leave a mess (not the employees, the patrons). We got ice cream outside. The line was shorter than inside and we wanted to be outside anyways. But, only one person was working. So it took some time. Now we wanted to sit and enjoy our ice cream...but you know, people are people and hog up more tables and chairs than they actually need. We made the best of it and enjoyed the ducks and the lake.

Make sure that on your trip to Madison you visit the Terrace. Located outside of the UW's Memorial Union, on the shores of Lake Mendota, it's a great place to grab a brat and beverage or just hang out with friends.

I was there to meet a friend I haven't seen in 20 years, we had beer and great conversation while overlooking the water

What a fun p,ace to spend a summer afternoon and evening. The view of the lake and all the boats was gorgeous. We enjoyed beverages on the terrace while listening to some great music

My wife and I try to get here at least once a year and we always get the Taco Salad Bowl and for dessert - Babcock ice cream...what else! We've always had a good time eating here as there is seating outside with a great view of the lake. And who can resist sitting on one of the famous chairs they put out for the warmer weather days.

Having been a student in Madison years ago it was fun to take a trip to the Union again. It is still a wonderful place to sit out on the terrace, have a beer and watch the activity out on the water. Der Rathskeller is still as it was many years ago, which was good to see, it's been a fun place for generations of students.

My husband and I enjoyed this place so much we visited twice during our weekend stay in Madison. The views of the lake are gorgeous and it's a great spot to enjoy a beer on a summer day. It's a chill spot to chat, read a book or people watch! Be sure to save room for ice cream!

There are a lot more tables and chairs out than in previous incarnations. And there is genuinely more space, especially up around the theater close to Hoofers, up on balconies there. So, great beer and great views with easier access to seating. One of the US's best university hang-out locations. Usable by townies too!

I'm from Madison and been going to the Union for years. Love it. My kids come home from out of state and can't miss going to the union. Especially during the summer and weekend evenings. They have bands playing then and when not it is great sitting out outside over-looking the lake. All kinds of traditional Wisconsin food, ice cream and beer. You do have to park at a parking garage or look for parking on a street. They have some metered parking there. You can also sit inside and look out the glass windows. They also have a coffee shop you can get your coffee and sit and work on your computer. Fun atmosphere.

We loved the fun atmosphere at the Terrace! We were there for a lovely Friday evening and had the chance to enjoy live music, look out over the lake and watch people of all walks of life: students, families, couples, & dogs (they're people too). Just be prepared to fight for a table, or bring a blanket to sit in the grass.

In the summer, especially, it is a great place to spend time with visiting friends or family and unbelievably beautiful. In the mid winter if you have a visitor from a hot climate it is fun to take them for a walk on the ice. "I am so scairt!"

Where else can you have an awesome cheeseburger, chips, and a beer while watching sailboats on a great summer day? Only at the Memorial Union Terrace.
It's always great to 'go back home to the Terrace'.

I love the Memorial Union Terrace. It is the perfect place to unwind, have some beer, and listen to music. Not only is the Terrace a fun and festive facility, but the Union Theatre and the Wheelhouse add so much to any visit.

A must go-to location to sit along the lake to appreciate a patio experience. A place to enjoy a wide variety of beverages, foods, and the best ice cream!

This is a nice area behind the Union hall. There is a lot going on and looks like a great place to hang out. I wonder how crowded it is when school is in session.

Great people watching as well s a place for young kids to feed ducks and to just play. The food and drinks are excellent. Possibly the number 1 spot for visitors to Madison.

If you haven't been to the Terrace, you have to. It is a very nice place next to Lake Mendota. You can have a drink, ice cream or some food... or just seat quietly to see the Lake.

Head straight to the Rathskellar if it's cold outside, or to the Terrace if it is warm. In the winter you can sit by a fireplace in the Rathskellar with a beer or a book. They have board games too. This has been my favorite campus spot since I was a student

We went to Strada for the first time a week ago and loved the pizza. We had the chicken and artichoke but you can also make your own and they have a great selection of ingredients. The crust is thin and crispy.

Where else can you jump into the lake, hear live music & get great food? Memorial Union is one of my favorite places ever. I'm biased as I got to spend 4 years living across from this gem.
Craft beer, the grill going all day & night, games from the Rathskeller, lake Mendota, paddle boarding, live music or movies on the terrace, and the best local ice cream.
When you visit Madison, plan for at least a day + night relaxing at the Union. It will be a highlight of your trip.

Sit in back overlooking the lake...watch sail boats, listen to music, enjoy a Wisconsin beer and food, and take in the ambiance of people and nature.

The Terrace is a unique place at the UW. With the lake view, you can relax here for hours. You can get a brat and a cup of beer and talk with friends. There are great bands there also.

What a great place to enjoy a meal, drinks or just visiting with friends!! There was live music when we were there which topped off the evening!

The terrace at the Memorial Union is a fabulous place to people watch, watch boaters and have a brat and beer. Plenty of tables and chairs. Fun place

Stumbled upon this spot while walking the lakeside trail—what a view! 🌅 You can grab food or drinks on the terrace too. Definitely worth a visit!

This is THE place to experience Madison. The best ice cream, iconic seating, the best views of boats and sunsets, live music, pitchers of beer... just add family or friends for a guaranteed good time.

Love this place. I have been going to "the Union" since the late 70s. Even with the few changes and improves love this place. Great place to see a band on a Friday night in July. the lake in the background, great beer (ok wine, but is is a campus) alwasy so much fun. Part of what makes Madison great!

What an awesome place to grab a beer and just sit by the lake. Beautiful area. Wish my campus had a cool place to hang out! Enjoyed people watching and the boats just bouncing in the marina area.

Waiting for my 7pm flight, I enjoyed the summer vibes of the terrace on a beautiful July Thursday last week. Not only does the terrace offer great lunch choices at good prices, but I had the option to sit inside or out, with great music and ambiance in each, while enjoying lakeside atmosphere. I even rented a paddleboard and jumped into Lake Mendota - I highly recommend. The paddleboard rates weren't too expensive so I would recommend exploring the lake if you're at the terrace on a nice day (they rent only when the water is above 60F). In the wintertime, it's a different story, but the Terrace is one of UW-Madison's hallmarks.

Make sure to grab an ice cream and enjoy a relaxing view by the lake. Get there early to see musical acts. This is a spot I take my visitors from out of town.

Beautiful spot to hang with friends on a warm sunny day.
Enjoy a brat, ear of roasted corn, and a brew.
Top it off with Babcock ice cream.
Great place to people watch on the terrace and on the water.

There was a free movie the night we visited. I would have prefereed catching a music night still....

The Union Terrace is rightfully a world-famous spot for people watching, enjoying fine Wisconsin draft beer and of course the unforgettable view of Lake Mendota.

One of the must-do things if you're visiting Madison when the weather is temperate is to hangout on the Memorial Union Terrace on the campus of UW-Madison.
The Terrace has probably been a major reason why students chose this university. The waters of Lake Mendota splash against the terrace where there is frequently live music. Best of all, you can just hang out there without buying anything.
Most people do get something and there are plenty of food choices to pick from. There a brat stand, an Italian place and the Rathskalle, which has a decent beer selection, sandwiches and a Wisconsin staple, batter-fried cheese curds.
If you're not a Union member, you need to purchase a one-day pass for $1 to purchase alcohol.
Prices for a beer top out at $6.75 for a New Glarus Spotted Cow ($16 per pitcher). I think a typical domestic beer was about $5 a cup.
Parking can be challenging during the academic year, but during the summer you can usually find a spot.

Always a great summer and fall place to enjoy a beer and a veggie brat and listen to some great hometown music.

This is a great place to enjoy a beer or Babcock Hall ice cream. The view is beautiful and the sunsets spectacular.

We were taking a walk through Madison and ended up on the terrace by the union. That sun was out, and there were people everywhere. The line for ice cream was crazy long, so we had juice and enjoyed a bit of rest in the sun looking out at Lake Mendota.

went in the winter so didnt get to experience any festivities. But the view is great and you can tell its a great summer spot.

Nice Friendly Environment just to chill and witness the sun set on a a balmy night!
Food and drinks were plenty and of course the top dessert choice are the creamy delicious ice cream with so many flavors..

Listening to the lake and watching the people. We visited every day but Sunday was filled up with people with the same
Idea. Just enjoying the weather with a wonderful view. Grab a bite at the little stand or walk inside for more options. Beer is available. I miss this place.

Whether you buy a brat or a Strada Pizza or a meal from one of the food carts on State Street, or bring your own bagged lunch, you can't beat the view and the atmosphere. And for heavens sake don't forget an ice cream at the Daily Scoop. This is a very special place indeed.

Memorial Union Terrace is the perfect place to hang out alone or with friends. Sit down and enjoy a snack, a meal or a beer! The view of Lake Mendota is amazing and the live music is a bonus. The Union Terrace is definitely a happy place to hang out!

What a wonderful facility for the student population, a building full of history reaching over the lakeshore, we were made to feel very welcome with our graduate hosts, excellent facilities, great food and drink options, clearly leading to a vibrant community embracing many cultures and activities.

This is always a good place to gather with good friends. Friendly staff and a relaxing place. Sometimes there is a live band. Good view of Lake Mendota and a good place to watch the sunset or even the sunrise, for that matter. Only drawback is that the lake often stinks. If the breeze is right, you won’t notice but if it isn’t, well, let’s just say it isn’t pleasant.

The Terrace is eclectic - food, ice cream, lounging on the patio, dangling your feet in the water and the view is pleasant and inviting.

We were here for grduation and enjoyed the terrace very much. The view is fantastic and there was plenty of seating. We would return except our grandson graduated.

When in Madison we always go to the terrace. Great view of the Lake and always crowded. Order Babcock ice cream,or dinner and just relax. Concerts during the summer

My daughter and I just went to the Union today to grab some delicious Babcock ice cream and sit on the terrace. It's a great place to be, especially in gorgeous weather. The view is lovely with the lake and boats.

A must see to get the full Madison experience. Sample university made ice cream, sip beer, listen to local musicians, watch sail boats, and take selfies in the iconic chairs!

I've been there a couple of times (during summer) to have a beer and watch the sunset. Amazing place if the weather allows to stroll at the patio.

We were there for homecoming weekend on a glorious evening. Had pizza from the Pizza oven which was very good. Of course the typical fair including Brats hamburgers multiple craft beers are available just a great place. Great people watching great place to meet friends

Been going since I was in H.S in the late 70`s. Special place, it holds up well. Amazing vibe, great beer....better music (depends on the night). Must see/be for a visitor to Madison.

Lovely iconic spot. Ignore the reviews that say it’s dog-friendly. Pets are NOT ALLOWED and they will ask you leave (nicely) if you have a dog with you.

I have love the Memorial Union since I was a student in the late 70's. I always make a stop when in Madison. The terrace is the best place to sit and have a beer, look out at the beautiful Lake Mendota and people watch. Lot's of food options and also serves the infamous Babcock Dairy ice cream!

The Terrace was great even though it was in late October. The views are beautiful. There was mostly non-students, so a very interesting vibe. It was nice to have a beer and relax.
Great place to eat lunch
We had a fun lunch sitting on the Memorial Union Terrace people-watching. There are several places within the Union to get a meal as well as brats & beer stand on the Terrace.b
