The Merritt is mostly a two-lane in each direction parkway running from NYC to Connecticut around he Hartford area. I stay away during rush hours and major holidays, but at any other time, it's a beautiful, tree-lined wonder with lovely, low stone bridges that moves right along (unless there's an accident or construction). It bears more than a passing resemblance to Robert Moses' Grand Central Parkway on Long Island...very curvy in the NY State section, straighter but still gracious in the Connecticut stretches. FAR more pleasant than I-95!

Beautiful scenery but way too much traffic at most times of the day. I go to ikea, going tgere are ten is ok but coming home to ny from ct is a nightmare around two to three!!

The storied old parkway was an engineering gem in its heyday. Now it's hopelessly overrun with vehicles and a slow, frustrating run.

Hey it's a road. A nice road, narrow from the days of yesteryear and very up down and all around. Kind of like a drive through Sherwood Forest with no trucks or tolls.

Overall just a really beautiful ride. I can’t wait to go back in the spring when I take it again on my way to New Haven. It’s a really beautiful stretch to take as opposed to the interstate.

The best part about this is the lack of trucks--this is cars only. The bridges over the highway are also very interesting, having been part of a project to make this a true "park"way--each bridge is different. It has been updated with somewhat better access to rest stops, but the on and off ramps are quite short and caution should be taken.

Literally one of the WORST Highways in the NE. There is always a lane closed and delays. Always avoid if another route is available.

It is such a nice scenic road that I felt compelled to write a review about it. As I was driving from NJ to MA, I got tired of the highways and at some point decided to try something different to change the scenery. I took Merritt Parkway and it was such a pleasant drive! It’s only a two lane but heavy vehicles are not allowed and there was not much traffic when I took it – on a Sunday evening. I could not get bored with the forest, the overhanging trees, the pretty overpasses, the layout of the road – gentle slopes, winding curves. I found it easy to stay alert with this pretty landscape. For me it was a great alternative to the southern portion of I-95 in Connecticut.

a beautiful well cared for highway... nicer to travel than 95 because there are no trucks... several gas stations along the way to use the bathroom or get a snack...

The Merritt Parkway has recently been my road of choice heading south since it takes me towards the Tappan Zee bridge. This historic parkway, with its attractive Art Deco overpasses, has not saved me any time because I always seem to hit morning traffic. Fortunately, there are no tractor trailer trucks and the foliage is especially pretty in the fall.

Must-see if you like history, nature and architecture, this beautiful Parkway from the 1930’s is a national treasure
Yes, today it is over-crowded with cars, but commercial vehicles (including trucks) are banned. Also gone are the tolls, allowing non-stop travel for 56 bucolic miles.
The Parkway boasts the nation’s first clover leafs and unique bridges. There’s also a tunnel and recently renovated service areas. And in Stratford, a small museum detailing the design and construction of this unique road.

The Merritt is amazing and picturesque road. It`s worth seeing for those who likes Art Deco architecture. The bridges over the parkway are the small gems

I grew up around the Merrit Parkway. As a teenager I used to commute to work on the Merrit. I never thought twice about it. I've since moved out of the area, as have my parents. Just last week I traveled through the area via the Merrit Parkway. Wow. People drive way, way too fast on this narrow, very pretty, but dangerous road. Slow down people. Maybe this has nothing to do with the Merrit and just has to do with Motorists in general. To be fair, we almost lost my lives on I290 in Worcester MA on the same day due to some nut job cutting us off. Just a warning to motorists choosing to take the Merrit, slow down.

I was traveling in Connecticut and a local friend took me on the Merritt Parkway instead of Interstate 95. The bridges are absolutely beautiful.

A horror show on summer Saturdays and Sundays. Nearly always a jam of some sort. Go off peak hours. If you travel then the road is scenic and fun to drive. Watch out for crazy drivers, though, who speed way above the limit.

We are now believers in the non- stress, slightly slower parkways. We take the Merritt Parkway right off of I-287 where it joins the Hutchinson Parkway into NYC then we follow Merritt to its end where it become the Milford Parkway and then we hop on I-95 near Hartford and reverse this coming south. It is an older, more scenic, slightly slower but much more beautiful road. Two lanes each direction, nice rest stops w / gas & store every 10 miles or so. So much more to enjoy other then the 95 cars cutting you off. It does not add any time to our trip and we arrived with less aggravation.

This highway is a good option when I-95 is packed. Always check the traffic as it's only 2 lanes. Be careful of deers crossing the highway.

Ah my hometown access to this often extolled and more often damned highway.
The design IS LOVELY, classic and decaying—too much use and too little repair. I blame Robert Moses fashion of roads Roads ROADS!
If we were Europe we’d been better off with trains! Now fast trains of China and Asia. But having lived in Connecticut, thus used the Merritt—nothing was better than a crisp fall day cranking up the music driving with windows wide open.
Still waiting for the fast trains.

Most beautiful, relaxing drive in USA. I go out of my way to drive this whenever I can. Yes, it's slower, but worth it. I love the rest stops, too.

This Merritt Parkway is a lovely drive. Much nicer than the Interstate. A lot of bridges over it (I believe over 70) and a lot of green. It really is a lovely drive.

A beautiful highway, much better to get from Fairfield County to NYC than I-95, probably the ugliest road in CT, especially through Bridgeport and Norwalk. Experiences a lot of traffic, but it’s worth it. It is a two lane road so if you have construction and one lane is closed you’re screwed. The rest stops are small but nice, and it drives through insanely rich parts of Fairfield County, including the Golden Triangle in the town of Greenwich, one of the richest neighborhoods on planet Earth. Easily the prettiest road in CT, avoid from 95 at all costs.

Very nice pathway from NY area to Hartford CT area. Really liked the wood guard rails. We'll maintained and beautiful surroundings.

Good pavement, nice scenery, fancy bridges, and unique signage. Worth taking instead of the interstate for a more local feel.
I am so pleased that I drove on the Merritt highway. The trees were beautiful. But I really enjoyed how each bridge was different from the others.
