Grand old mission

By meowrtee |

One of the oldest and grandest mission in California. Self-guided tour inside and outside. The old bath/laundry area is still standing - thank goodness, as it was one of our favorites. Mission was covered by Huelle Howser (sp?) and we think also by Ken Kramer.

surNice surprise

By LovemyAcurađŸŒ” |

When we arrived they were having mass so we went into the museum area after paying our admission. I'm not really a big museum person, but enjoyed this one. You wonder about learning about the history of the mission and its people. The video at the end of the tour was interesting, but wish I had seen it first. We then were able to walk in and look around the church and walked around the cemetery spending a little over 2 hours in all. The largest pepper tree in CA was an interesting attraction we enjoyed before leaving.

Very nice to come and visit

By GIGI ,2010, |

We visited the church while we are in the area and I’m so glad that we did come in and discover the beautiful church and grounds. The church is very old and you can enjoy some beautiful paintings and sculptures. Next to the church is a nice little museum and gift shop. Right next to the museum is a beautiful rose garden with some beautiful sculptures, in the garden is the oldest pepper tree in California brought from Peru in 1830. This mission is worth your stop and a must if your in the area.

Weekend Visit

By Joe G |

Hello
Mission San Luis Rey is a remarkable historic site that is easily accessible to Southern California Residents. There is a wealth of knowledge within this scenic historic location that can enrich the minds of both the young and old. The Mission offers a wide range of services in addition to religious services. The grounds are very well maintained, peaceful and relaxing. I urge anyone to take their families for an outing or picnic at this Mission and enjoy some of San Diego’s Historic sites at its best.

Beautiful historic mission

By Prfsr |

Tour the mission, it is beautiful. Be sure to find out the connection with the Zorro TV series. There is a special tree within it. They have a behind the scene tour that I would like to take.

Behind the scenes tour

By erameram |

Took the behind the scenes tour. It was very educational. Tour guide very knowledgeable; and it was a great history lesson. Nice gift shop too.

Outstanding

By Yvonne M |

Awesome place. The history and old buildings are unbelievable. There are still the some of the original buildings that were first constructed. We took the museum tour for $7. and it was worth the price to see how the history evolved. Had a video that explained it all. Fascinating! The church and old paintings there were magnificent. They are in the process of restoring all of them. Very impressive.

"King" of the 21 coastal CA missions

Peaceful retreat center. Historic building. Picnic tables available on front lawn area. Enclosed courtyard garden with historic pepper tree.

very nice place

By Leonila D |

nice church and garden, it is very rare to see such beautiful historical place in USA. There is also a theology school.

Visit to the Mission

By GoodyTravels |

This mission is interesting and worth seeing. It is not as extensive as Mission San Juan Capistrano. Parking is much easier than San Juan Capistrano.

Historical Church

By wavslide J |

A beautiful Historical Church that hosts many community events. It's part of the California Mission Trail.

Went to Christmas mass. Very enjoyable! Kids processed to manger in church and left flowers as gifts, full band orchestra played Christmas hymns and choir sang. Very refreshing!

Informative and religiously compelling

By kgoodfield68 |

Beautiful church and the tour was very informative. Grounds well kept. You can have a picnic there as well. Plan a day trip and head to the beach for the sunset.

Gorgeous

By Gayle L |

This place is gorgeous! The grounds are just beautiful and so peaceful! Every one I came across was just so genuinely nice.

Worth a visit

By Maggie K |

This was a beautiful peaceful place to learn about the history of this Franciscan Mission dedicated to St. Louis. You can tour the church and learn about it with an excellent tour guide. The interior is painted with designs from the inidigenous people. There is a nice museum off the gift shop for a nominal fee. You may enter the interior courtyards, but the large one is for those attending retreats. The church graveyard is adjacent to the beautiful mission church. Lovely peaceful place. Rest rooms on site.

Beautiful Historical setting

By ctnykiel |

Beautiful, serene, historical site. As the King of Missions, the footprint is huge compared to other missions. This ACTIVE Mission has so many things going for it. Plus it is an active parish and has services on the Parish side as well as services and special events in the Historic Church. And so much history with the Franciscans, Luiseno Indians, and Native Oceansiders. I have also done the quiet day retreat, very nice.

Really enjoyed our visit.

By Sandy2645 |

Beautiful mission. The cemetery was interesting to explore, the grounds were landscaped beautifully, the architecture is gorgeous and the museum gave a comprehensive history of the settling of southern California. Really enjoyed our visit

Come for Mass, stay for history!

By anita p |

Not only is this historic church active, but they offer retreats as well. Beautiful grounds, and a contemplative respite.

Showing friends oceanside

By Margaretokeefe |

The mission is beautiful. The original chappel has been renovated and is open to the public. It is a peaceful place to sit and reflect. The rose garden is lovely and the grounds are a wonderful place to walk around,

So interesting.

By Sandra S |

I thought I knew everything there was about the Missions but I guess I didn't. Great museum and great information. Well worth the visit.

Beautiful Mission

By Heather M |

We got a little lost on our way home from Mexico, and ended up here!! How fortuitous!! We didn't have long to visit, but we spent time inside the mission and in the grave yard. I wish we could have seen the museum and gift shop.
But the church alone is well worth a visit!! It is beautiful and peaceful!!

Well worth the time

By NormKeith |

The mission was founded on June 12, 1798. The current church, built in 1815, it the third church on this location. It is a National Historic Landmark for its pristine example of a Spanish mission church complex. It is amazing how they built such a high dome between the Transepts and in front of the Chancel area. It was interesting walking through the church, museum, grounds which includes the largest Olive Tree in California and the onsite cemetery.

pleasent place

By Nancy B |

My father is buried here and I enjoy visiting each time I am in the area. It is clean, bright and beautiful. There are often school children visiting the mission and they bring joy to this historic place. It is well preserved and the cemetery has been expanded in a beautiful park like setting. It is a peaceful place to spend quite, personal or family time.

Beautiful historic site

By tabibit |

A historic mission is right off 76. A quiet, lovely place to stroll. A beautiful garden with many interesting trees, huge cacti, and California’s oldest pepper tree. Friendly and knowledgeable volunteers tell us about the Mission then and now.

Trip to the mission

By enaaz |

This is quite a historic place. The museum is fixed nicely and there several rooms with displays and information about the mission and its past. There is a super gift shop that I have purchased items from. Also there is a cemetery. The mission is still in use and is open for use.

Lookin For Some History

By Robert W |

In Oceanside for a vacation, went to the Mission for some history. Took the self guided tour, was very interesting and informative. Well done tour through the building and some beautiful grounds.

Love the old missions

By Larrybob47 |

This a beautifully restored mission along the California Mission trail. You can take a guided tour or take a self guided tour through the museum and grounds.

Nice plave

By Rose K |

Scenic place with lots of interesting history. Very nice gift shop. Area to walk around amidst the trees.

Beautiful Church in Oceanside, very traditional and impressive!

By John Wu |

This is a great place for people who loves history, of course the cemetery service seems very active there, but very beautiful church of Mission series.

Definitely a cool Mission as all of the California Missions are !

By Tony K |

Very nice grounds and definitely a cool Mission. The construction & architecture is amazing for how old it is. The oldest Pepper Tree in California is there still growing. The seeds were brought from Peru by a Sailor in 1830.

Plenty of free parking

By L B |

I went there to donate clothing because they have one of the few shelters in the area. It really wasn’t a visit but thoughtful visitors might want to know the pathway to the main entrance is a bit dusty and a long walk from the lot so wear comfortable shoes.

one of my favorite

By K7191YKgloriam |

Mission San Luis Rey is one of my favorite missions to visit. I work as a driver and deliver cars to the Oceanside area. Every chance I get when I am in the area I visit. They have Mass at noon Monday through Friday.

Beautiful place but not worth a visit

By Pascale B |

This is a nice well maintained square with friendly staff. However, there is nothing really exceptional to make a detour.

King of the California missions

By Annette M |

This is the best preserved mission of the 21 of the California missions along El Camino Real. It is the largest. Founded in 1798, it continues to operate as a church and has a small museum. If you are here and interested in California history, do not miss a visit to Heritage Park located nearby. Heritage Park was created in 1976 to commemorate the bicentennial festivities. Historic buildings (about a dozen) around Oceanside were relocated to this small park. The buildings, I am told, can be entered on weekends. I was here during a weekday. So only the exterior could be viewed. Great photo op. Nice spot for a picnic. There are picnic tables.

Early California at it's best

By dsrtgrl |

If you want to enjoy a slice of living California history at it's best, Mission San Luis Rey de Francia is the one to visit. The largest and best preserved of all the California Missions, It has a retreat center and offered a full agenda of private and group retreats throughout the year. Mass is held Sundays at 7am in English and 7pm in Spanish and M-F at Noon in English. Visit the museum M-S 9:30-5 or Sunday 10-5 for $7or under depending on your age- Active Military and Children under 5 are admitted Free. Very cool place plan to spend at least two hours or three if you attend mass before or after your visit.

California Spanish mission with large grounds

By ransom007 |

The mission has free parking. I have been to about half of the California Spanish missions and this one has one of the largest land areas. The admission office and gift shop are together and the museum is next to the admission desk. Admission to the museum is $7 (discounts are available for seniors, etc.). The church was open and is an impressive place to enter and observe. It is the second most southern mission in California and about 10 minutes from Intestate 5. If you are interested in history, it is well worth a visit.

Beautiful Mission

By LindaG7325 |

It was a lovely place to visit. I was very interested in the history of it. We loved the gift shop too. We bought rosarys and religious medals,

King of the Missions a real treat.

By macambo |

Spend a few hours in Spanish Colonial California. Beautiful restored interior & wonderful manicured gardens. Say thanks to the Dominican brothers if you catch a glimpse one at his duties. Gift shop offers unique selection of one of a kind gifts.

A beauty

By tijuanade |

One of the most beautiful - and large - California missions. Nicely preserved, beautiful grounds, and an excellent museum.

King of the Missions is like a Beautifully Restored Masterpiece

By FoggyMonday |

The "period rooms" are superb and loaded with readable, easy historical data, which makes for a pleasant, enjoyable learning experience.

The inner quadrangle has a sacred garden which is closed to the public unless you are on retreat at the mission.

The cemetery is said to be the oldest community burial grounds in all of San Diego North County.

There was more to see than we had time for so a second trip is in the making.

Another beauty in the string of pearls

By MERoots |

Even though this mission has had to be restored several times, the essential framework of the original mission is still there. It retains its enclosed garden and the architecture of the Spanish colonial era. It is also a working parish, and we visited while a Rosary devotion was being held. It would be beautiful to attend Mass there. As one of the string of missions winding up the coast, it is one of the better preserved, although I think the grounds of Carmel are the most beautiful. Well worth a visit.

Beautiful old church

By dryder2016 |

This church is a landmark and is absolutely gorgeous inside. It is a must stop, if you are in the area.

beautiful mission

By rmango2 |

This mission is one of the most beautiful in California. It offers a lot of interesting things to see at the site including the rose garden, cemetery, lavanderia, koi pond, museum. It is a very active church offering classes and special events by different cultures.

A Pleasant Mission to visit!

By Trip137901 |

My wife enjoys seeing Missions with history. The grounds are nice and the mission inside is beautiful.

Beautiful mission

By richardgregg11 |

We stopped by this mission today to check it out. It is still a working facility so not everything is open to the public. But there is a lot of things you can go and see on your own with a self guided tour map, which you can get at the information desk. It's amazing to think this place is over 220 years old.
It's chapel is breathtaking. Beautiful location to just wander around and take in how old everything is.

Beautiful mission

By laura s |

So well maintained and very informative museam. Good for family friends young folks also. Even has a great gift shop with lots of books.

So glad we followed up on a recommendation to visit here!

By DiningDs |

California has numerous missions, and this one was highly recommended. The grounds were well attended and the church was historical and beautiful. There's a gift shop and a quaint burial area. It's still active with over 30 friars living there. Easy to find!

A MUST See

By Leonard S |

Fantastic history of the church's origin. It's been very well maintained. Spent nearly one hour in the church and on the grounds. Didn't get into the museum/gift shop. One of the state's largest pepper tree is on the grounds. Very old cemetery by the mission. Beautiful plants, flowers, etc.

Fascinating

By Joyfullyanointed |

We had a wonderful tour and a delicious lunch at this beautiful historical attraction. The tour offered insight and inspiration.

By 1HBgirl |

I am new to San Diego county and was driving around when I happened to go by the mission. It’s very charming and interesting. The history of all the missions is fascinating but this one has some very old art that’s been restored and even has the original document signed by Abraham Lincoln when the missions were given back to the Catholic Church. The staff there are very nice and informative.

Awesome, Peaceful

By Dragon789wv |

We came here with family (about 12), to pay our respects to a beloved member buried here.
It was our first time at this Mission. I must admit that it was quite awesome, serene, beautiful grounds.
We walked around, saw the giant Pepper tree from afar, and of course visited the cemetery.
We also went into the church itself.
Everything at this Mission is "first class"
Because we were pressed for time and with family, we did not go into the museum.
When we are this way again, we will visit the museum

Authentic

Real history here. Museum was very interesting. Make sure you visit the cemetery, kiln & laundry. Inexpensive

Spring break

By Lemuel12 |

Beautiful mission. Docent with history was very informative . Small but very good museum. The grounds were lovely for exploring the old laundries and the cork tree was unexpected.

Tranquil and beautiful

By Jo R |

The Mission is a must-see when traveling in Oceanside. It has gorgeous grounds, a lovely church, an interesting gift shop and a well documented museum.

So Much History

By Colin Archibald |

I learned more on this visit. Things I never asked before. The sign in front "Mission San Luis Rey De Francia" caught my attention so I asked. I did not know that King Louis IX of France had become a Saint and that the Mission was named after him. Literally translated to Mission Saint Louis King of France. make sure you visit the museum and ask questions of the docents, it is amazing what you will learn.

Great California historic landmark

By Fin_Diver |

Visit this iconic California landmark in Oceanside during the week, when crowds and traffic are low. You'll have more time to spend in the active Catholic church (prayers acceptable), and visit the musueum (a donation/fee accepted). The history of the California Missions is rich and interesting if you read and absorb everything during your self-walking tour in the musuem. We actually went to the peaceful and beautiful cemetery grounds also. And of course, there is a quaint gift shop.

By Kristen |

This is a beautiful mission but we were disappointed that the garden is private and you’re not allowed to walk through it like at other missions.

Restored Mission offers history

By GoAlong2 |

We enjoyed visiting this mission and found out it had been one of the largest and most successful missions along the California coast. The chapel is large and hosts Mass daily at noon. We enjoyed the folk art and exploring the old cemetery next to it. The museum is located in one section of the old living quarters and covers the history of the mission, it's downfall, and restoration. The interior courtyard gardens are beautiful, but reserved for guests of the retreat center occupying the rest of the quadrangle building. Out front we saw an excavation of the old soldier's barracks and the steps going down to the spot where they washed clothes and bathed. The mission is build of adobe bricks and whitewashed plaster. The old wooden beams and tile floors are well worn. This is a great spot to stop and learn about the missions that played a role in California history.

Impressive

By JobbyJane |

More than I expected to see and learn about on a stroll one afternoon. The cemetery is beautiful and old chapel is historic! If you are new to oceanside spends some time visiting and learning about the mission!

Great experience.

By Sheldon M |

Very informative. Beautiful property. A true peek into Oceanside history. Spend a wonderful day learning California culture.

King of the Mission

By killerrat007 |

Beautiful mission. Great to see from afar and up close.

This mission has a tour you can do inside (for a few dollars), a cemetery (for free, outside) and lot of things to look at and walk and learn from outside.

This is a beautiful place to take picture at.The are many things to look at, from old graves and headstones, to old buildings and how people got water and cooked food.

I highly encourage you to come visit and spend a few hours learning about Mission San Luis Rey, a California Mission in Oceanside.

Beautiful Mission

By Liza N |

This mission is absolutely beautiful and often hosts many cultural days - Dia de Los Muertos is a must!!

The Mission: definitely worth a visit. Employee/Volunteers: very nice. Spend: 1-2 hours.

By MCK |

I specifically went to Oceanside to see this Mission and a museum downtown. I also purposely chose to go on a Wednesday at 10 AM, when they opened, to avoid crowds... it was perfect. The Mission did not disappoint. Beautifully kept, my friend and I came in August and paid the adult entry fee of $8., plenty of parking. It was fairly hot day, little to no shade unless you are inside, so be prepared. We did the Self-Guided Tour throughout the whole property inside and out, all 11 points of interest. I loved seeing the oldest Peruvian Pepper tree. A little disappointed that you could not walk through the beautiful gardens and see the pepper tree up close.

There was a gentleman walking the grounds to help direct and and to answer any question you had. He was truly a book of information on the history of the entire place. This mission in Oceanside is definitely worth visiting.

The Mission: definitely worth a visit. Employee/Volunteers: very nice. Spend: 1-2 hours.

Historical site.

By quiltingteacher |

This place is amazing. Southern California history lessons stressing how priests from Spain, along with local Spanish & indigenous people settled & farmed here.

Impressive!!

By Amy H |

Coming in to see the San Luis Rey mission was WOW! This place is quite large and great for walking around and spending a couple hours. I was fortunate enough to attend the second half of mass here but I was a little thrown off there was no music or singing during mass? The unique thing about this mission was that this is still very much a working mission and even still share the grounds with the Native American tribe in the area. The stairs to the lavanderia was really cool!

Completing a bucket list to see all 21 Missions.

By MichaelScott2013 |

We had a wonderful time exploring the church, the cemetery and a very nice historical museum. Beautiful interior dome. It's known as the "King of the Missions" and was the most prosperous.

Beautiful, serene mission.

By budmancjm |

The old mission church is open all day until 5 pm, the serenity is striking. The grounds are beautifully maintained and a walk through the cemetery is an historic journey.

The King of the Missions and what used to be

By llvassoc |

Very interesting history on this mission. It had to be absolutely huge in its time!Displays are nicely placed. Good reading on each selection. Nice video that summed it all up. I'm looking forward to visiting another one of the Missions in the future set up by the Spanish so many years ago.

Amazing place to visit!

By Mister-Markie |

This mission is off the beaten track through Oceanside, but well worth a diversion. It is old, it is large, and it is great to look through.

The mission has much to offer: a large grass area with picnic tables, a view of the adobe ruins of former military barracks, a mission church, a mission cemetery (but not dating to the mission founding), a really professional and wonderful museum, the state's oldest living pepper tree, a large gift shop and a cute little coffee shop and patio area. The most offerings of any mission I have been to so far.

The best advice I can give you is to take your time and enjoy all the exhibits and look everywhere you can - the tree came to my attention as I was heading to the restrooms, and the café was found that way as well! Never know what you'll come across . . .

Allow at least 2 hours for a decent visit, although I tend to really engage and spent about 3 hours here. But as mentioned earlier, well worth a trip off the beaten path.

Check website for current hours

By MominOC |

we walked through about 7 rooms and read about the history. At the end there is a nicely done video. Gift shop is stocked well with nice mementos at various price ranges. Cemetery is a peaceful end to the visit to this Mission.

very nice small museum

we got caught in the covid 19 closing and had delay our visit to the museum. we had a wonderful visit during their brief reopening. they are now closed awaiting permission. very informative exhibits.

The Mission San Luis Rey is filled with little bits of history and points of interest. On the grounds is the oldest pepper tree in CA and it is beautiful and tranquil - the grounds are beautiful with the rose gardens and the places to just sit and meditate in a busy, crazy world

I Find Peace Here

By Jim B |

Simply one of the the most peaceful places to attend mass. The history and grounds are wonderful and there is something special about the Franciscan Order. What a treasure.

Loved the architecture

By Clay C |

Found this place late in the day. Typical Spanish Mission (one of the older ones). Found the cemetery on the grounds interesting. Graves dating to the 1700's to present day. Museum offered lots of history.

Big Beautiful Mission--Worth Seeing

By CO-SOS2013 |

Very pretty site for the Church and graveyard. The walk-around is free, and they have a small museum.

By Fietsen1 |

I used to live in San Antonio, Texas where we have several missions. This is the first mission that I've ever been to in California and I would have to say that I was very impressed. First of all, it is very easy to get to and there is plenty of parking. The people who work the front desk were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. If memory serves, the gentleman who he spoke to was a volunteer. He was very enthusiastic. The actual building itself is not too big, but there is plenty to do inside. They have a number of artifacts with descriptions. I will say that the number of things they had inside was actually perfect. Sometimes, places can have too many things to read where you start to get a headache. This Mission actually had a good amount of material inside. Once you are done walking around looking at the artifacts, you should definitely go in to the main part of the church. It is absolutely beautiful. Then take a stroll through the cemetery. It was very peaceful. The air was also very fresh that day and the weather was great!

Peaceful history

By shelley s |

Nic display. They have s Small museum that shows life back in the height of the mission. I live seeing old churches and the part they played in history

San Luis Rey mission

If you are looking for a bit of history on the Southern California, this is worth the visit. Beautiful grounds to walk around as well.

Stopped to see

By Michael K |

Lovely old mission, but too much stuff for sale. Not like missions we aw in San Antonio. Not sure if the church condones all the merchandise.

Place of Interest to all

By William S |

Wonderful California mission, worth a visit. You will have to decide if the museum fee is worth it for you.

Beautiful Mission

By hthrbug |

Gorgeous Mission. Daily Mass at Noon. Beautifully landscaped grounds. Attached cemetery with lots of history. Has a gift shop and museum. Really peaceful and serene.

Excellent visit to lovely spot with good museum

By Kathleen J |

This is one of the best preserved -- or best renovated -- missions in the system, IMHO. The museum is very well done; the presentation of the history is excellent. The grounds were beautiful. My first impression was "this looks like one imagines the missions in the old movies." While not ALL of the gardens are open unless you are on retreat, the cemetery and some courtyards could be visited and there were beautiful views. Since the missions do not receive any government funds for their preservation even though they are national historic treasures, we don't mind paying the admission price, which was only $5 for seniors.

A great stop on the Mission Trail

By Timothy Krenzke |

My wife and I have traveled to Missions from San Diego to just south of San Francisco. This mission is outstanding and easily visited. It has a beautiful setting and is an active church. You don't have to be Catholic to enjoy these missions. They are part of the history of the settlement of California. Take and hour or two to visit Mission San Luis Rey.

Classic Mission

By J H |

Beautiful classic Mission off the 76 in Oceanside. Classic historical architecture. Very relaxing, peaceful to visit.

Easter weekend visit

By Larry W |

We visited because of our child's California mission project. Beautiful place. Friendly staff. Visit for the history. Visit for the spiritual connection. Visit for Mass. Visit to just find some solace.
Easter service was beautiful (... and the songs were in Samoan... enchanting).
Not far from I-5 and Oceanside, so a must visit.

Beautiful, serene

By NikonNurse |

Very beautiful, serene place. Great to see the history. The graveyard and the dates tell a small story of the history. Beautiful grounds

Beautiful and well preserved...

By JRottie |

We saw the mission not far off the freeway and made point to go visit it. The grounds and buildings are gorgeous and very well kept. Staff was friendly and helpful with questions. A good worthwhile visit.

Amazing place with Great History

By Tectonic Media |

Wow, this place was amazing with a rich history and beautiful grounds. Amazed to see a document from Abraham Lincoln there. They have a nice gift shop and everyone is welcome!

Interesting place to walk thru

By Jean A |

We visited this old mission. The building is old, but beautiful. We went outside to the burial ground. Very enjoyable looking at history.

By StigJim |

The old church and the museum are absolutely outstanding. The museum tour does an excellent job of telling the story of the structures, the indigenous Americans, and the Spanish Franciscans who lived and worked here during the mission era, as well as story of decay and renovation that followed. This a must-see on a trip to the Oceanside/Carlsbad area.

Incredible

By Camper629 |

Wow - what an amazing piece of history! Beautiful and moving. Well worth spending some time in the cathedral and wondering the grounds. So much history so well preserved

Not Just Another Mission

By Lupita Z |

I love visiting the California Missions and have visited most of them. This one had escaped me given the number of times a year I visit the area. This time around I had some extra time before I headed home and upon seeing the signs on the freeway decide to stop.
I loved it. I was immediately struck by its white exterior reminiscent of Mission San Javier del Bac. The interior has that old missionary style geometrical designs painted on the walls. The saints are all old and Spanish in nature. They have a beautiful picture of the Virgin of Guadalupe and equally beautiful statues of Mary and Joseph.
Unlike Missions San Juan Capistrano and Santa Barbara , you are not permitted to stroll the grounds. You are able to get terrific views of the rose garden and of the oldest Pepper Tree in California that is almost 190 years old!
You have great views of the rolling hillsides and there are plenty of shaded picnic tables to enjoy a boxed lunch.
I'm Catholic and spiritual but I think anyone can enjoy the missions. They are peaceful, tranquil and present beautiful period Spanish architecture. They are always worth the stop!'

Enjoyable experience

By Adam B |

We made a morning visit to the mission with our 3 boys (9, 10, 12). The two older boys, and parents, enjoyed learning about the history of the California missions and the various artifacts. We enjoyed everything from the gentlemen at the museum counter , who gave us a lot of info up front, to the walk through the church before the daily 12pm mass.

Wonderfully Peaceful & Informative

By Theresa Ferguson |

One of California's 21 Missions & originally built in 1798, Mission San Luis Rey de Francia is called "The King of the Missions". This place has a wonderful tour with an informative video & displays. The church itself is exquisitely stunning. But, the best (in my opinion) is the gardens in the middle of the cemetery ... A peaceful area with garden benches & serene water feature. This place is a must-see.

Another mission off the bucket list.

By Sandra M |

Very interesting and loved the document signed by Abraham Lincoln giving the missions back to Church. This was part of our goal to see all the missions after our trip only 1 left to see. It was nice to leave our home after over a year of being home.

History - great learning experience

By DanielHarn |

This was an amazing side trip to our LEGOLAND Trip. My family had never been to one of the California Missions and the be able to visit San Luis Rey as their first was an amazing experience. You could see and feel the history as you walked the grounds and have a little fun watching the ground squirrels too. 100% recommend for anyone who loves history.

Beautiful Church and Grounds

By John U |

This beautiful church is still functioning as a Roman Catholic Church, complete with resident Franciscan friars. This is one of the 21 Missions founded by Father Junipero Serra during the 18th Century. They claim to have the "first pepper tree" ever planted in California. I'm not sure that's a major accomplishment, since pepper trees tend to be fairly dirty trees which need a lot of maintenance. However, they seem to be proud of the tree which can be seen in the garden area. The parking area is quite large and presents no problems, even for large vehicles or even RVs.

Beautiful mission

By Locatina |

I had to see this mission before I left Oceanside, and it did not disappoint. The old cemetery from the 1800s was still there. The church was beautiful.

Historic

By howardb968 |

Some very interesting early California history. Did not take the full tour as we were time limited, but enjoyed what we did see.

Interesting history and beautiful Spanish-inspired church

By debbiebernardo |

There is lots of history at the mission. You can walk some of the grounds and the museum is full of artifacts and great history of the area and California. The church is beautiful, with painting on the ceiling and walls. It was worth the trip to experience part of California history. You cannot tour all the grounds as it is home to 34 friars and an active retreat center and university. The numerous succulent plants out front are amazing. Definitely worth a look.

Peacefully Serene

By ociannarose |

This California Mission is only one of a few that has an active Friar Community. All of the Masses are precided by the Franciscan Friars. The population here is very diverse and the various Ministries reflect that. Retreats are regularly held as are religious education and religious events. Peace can easily be found while sitting quietly in the Mission church or the cemetery.

Lovely

Lovely grounds to walk around. Beautiful chapel. Interesting history. Nice gift shop. Stop to see the oldest chili tree in the back.

Small but well-preserved mission church

By cassandra2009 |

San Luis Rey is pleasant but it's not a must see destination. The church's indigenous decoration is pleasing and the cemetery is worth a look. It is unfortunate that the garden is not open to visitors.

The Best

The jewel of all the California Missions, the inside of the church and history is phenomenal. loved it loved it loved it

Beautiful Wedding Venue

By jhalcon |

Attended a wedding at Mission San Luis Rey. What a beautiful venue. The Mission is beautiful, the grounds are magnificent, and the church is gorgeous. I recommend to everyone interested in explored the California Missions, to visit a place of serenity, and to celebrate their Catholic beliefs. An absolutely beautiful venue.

A very nice day.

By Travelforfun1946 |

We enjoyed the church, it was beautiful. The mission was well kept. It was very informative of the Indians and the padres that had lived there. There was a very nice courtyard. Worth the trip.

Well-preserved!

By Edgar I |

California is indeed lucky to have the Missions. Mission San Luis Rey is well-preserved, clean and beautiful. A must visit for all Californians!

Living Historical Retreat

By Michael P |

Our RV caravan is visiting Camp Pendleton and San Onofre beach to explore this area. Seeing a wonderful piece of history still in use as a Church, Retreat and Spiritual Direction is a heartwarming educational experience that has to be experienced. The museum is an excellent way of learning how and why the mission is here and used in previous days. There are many fine examples of clothing and personal items of those that have lived and worked on the 56 acres that remain. The political stories associated with the mission are to be read to understand how difficult it can be for religion to continue. All of the staff we met was friendly, sincere and helpful with our learning experience. This retreat is best enjoyed at a slow pace that permits ones mind to relax and absorb the sights.

Retreat weekend

By Domenick F |

Excepting things for what they are, the San Luis Rey retreat center is brilliant! The accommodations are simple and perfect, the grounds are clean, well kept and beautiful! The staff is friendly and informed to functions on the grounds and in the surrounding area! All in all I left relaxed and happy. Worth the time to explore for the day if that’s your preference.

Historic and beautiful but still mainstream

By Terry D |

Mission San Luis Rey is just of CA 76 in Oceanside and beautiful from the distance. This time by we stopped and found the real story. Yes, there's the Mission buildings in their restored glory, but also a very active educational program for school children, an active and historical cemetery, a quiet retreat area and an active Catholic church (and yes, a Museum well worth the modest admission price). As Catholic Mass is held at noon each weekday, the parking lot fills and the parishioners attend mass in the wonderful church. The grounds and plants are beautiful and worth a visit on their own.

Second Mission of the El Camino Real de la Alta California

By Miguelvaldez |

Very nice place to visit in a modern Californian area, part of the history of the state.
This mission was built on June 1798 by Padre Fermín Lasuén.

An oasis in the city

By ScarlettHippie |

This is a little oasis in the city. The grounds are a calming place to go for a walk, get some fresh air and escape from the city for a bit without driving for hours.

By jeaninohio0 |

The helpful audio tour cost $3 and just one of us needed it. Dont miss visiting the church itself and wandering in the cemetery.

Dramatically beautiful Mission a must visit in Oceanside

By J David |

San Diego's Spanish heritage is nowhere more firmly rooted than in its dramatically beautiful missions. It was here the missionary monks, led by Father Junipero Serra, began their chain of 21 missions throughout California. Two missions and two assistencias can still be found within the United States.

Between 1769 and 1823, the Spanish built 21 missions in a chain that stretched from San Diego to north of the San Francisco Bay in an attempt to colonize "Alta California". The missions were approximately 30 miles apart, which was considered a one-day's journey on horseback. The road connecting the missions was known as the El Camino Real, which means "The Royal Highway." Father Junipero Serra established nine missions before his death and burial at Mission San Carlos.

The Mack Daddy of them all is San Luis Rey.
Often called the "King of the Missions," Mission San Luis Rey is the largest of all 21 California missions. Established by Father Fermin de Lasuen in 1798, the mission was the eighteenth founded and was named after King Luis IX of France.

Until the mid-1800s, the mission's church was the largest structure in California. Soon after its founding in 1798, Mission San Luis Rey housed and served the largest population of Native Americans (more than 2,000). It was the only one in California to have a wooden cupola and dome of its type and design, made from pine trees brought down from Palomar Mountain

After its dedication, Mission San Luis Rey de Francia was left in the care of Father Antonio Peyri. Father Peyri was extremely popular with the local Natives and he cultivated what would eventually become a thriving community. Despite his hard work and local popularity, the Mexican Government mandated that Father Peyri return to Spain in 1832.

It is fabled that the local Indians followed Father Peyri to the San Diego Harbor and begged him to stay. When he insisted that he must go, two Native boys chose to accompany him back to Spain. Pablo Tac, one of the Indian boys, became a priest and wrote an autobiography of his journey.

San Luis Rey is an inspiring family friendly place to visit. Self guided tours takes a few hours to half day to cover all the grounds. The price of admission is a bargain. Adults $7, youth 6-18 $3. There is also merchandise for sell in the small shop.

Beautiful California Mission! Free entrance

By sharrongeg |

We have toured many of the Californian Missions, so we opted against both the behinds the scenes and museum tour. Just sat in the church for awhile and walked the grounds. No fee to just sit and observe. Large parking lot, also free.

Interesting that there are ruins from a Mormon settlement right in front of the church. Not much signage about why the Mormons built here, or why the Catholics allowed them to build 100 feet in front of their premier mission.

This is an opportunity to not only visit a national historic place but learn the history and its impact on California

By tsuarez00 |

The museum was interesting as well as walking the grounds and reading about it. The docent was very helpful in answering questions. Never felt rushed

Beautiful grounds, historical beauty, peaceful

By 2beans2000 |

The architecture and grounds make this mission a beautiful site to visit and spend time.... wander, find quiet time, enjoy the peace if the mission.

Attend mass and perhaps one if the summer concerts held at the mission.

The mission is one of the string of missions built one day’s travel apart (either one day’s walk or one day by donkey). Mission San Juan Capistrano is to the north and Mission An Diego is to the south.

All the missions are Franciscan and are actively run by Francisan priests and brothers.

Peaceful day

By Eileen C |

This is called the King of the Missions and it truly is. Beautiful grounds, great docents, The sanctuary is mostly original, and they have services often, every day. This is a traditional mission with side alters, a central nave, bell tower. I always enjoy the old cemeteries whenever I can.The museum is outstanding, so is the gift shop. This is a definite if you like CA missions.

Beautiful History!

By loriicenhour |

This place is worth the stop. Such deep history and just plain beautiful! My husband and I loved the whole place but the Pepper Tree from 1800's was amazing as was the inside of the chapel.

A step back in time

By dondua |

Its white walls and blue dome beckon from the highway like a giant set from a Hollywood movie invoking all sorts of romantic ideals from the past. You can almost feel Juniper Serra be-conning you to explore this giant of a building and its grounds. With the Franciscan friars still in attendance one can immerse themselves in the history of California in the King of the Missions. This is no inactive monastery butone communitythat caters to thousands each week in a very active community that is open to visitors. Extensive grounds. many buildings in addition to several places of worship await the hordes of visitors that make their way there.

Great Place to Visit

By Janet B |

I love the CA missions and this one is no exception. It's a must to visit if you're in Oceanside. It's also a good spot for photos

King of the Missions!

By ExpoNationals |

Mission San Luis Rey De Francia is called the King of the Missions. I believe it is called the King because at over 60 acres, this Mission is the largest (area wise) of the 21 California missions. It is located in beautiful Oceanside, CA.

Each mission is beautiful and special in it's own way. We explored a bit of Mission San Luis Rey. Inside the Church, as expected, it is very lovely, spiritual, and historical. There is a museum to discover more, and the admission is only $7. Wonderful gift shop. Do not miss exploring some of the grounds as well. From a distance, you can spot the oldest Pepper Tree in California.

It was a couple of hours very well spent.

Beautiful and Peaceful

By Roberta J |

We walked the grounds to include the cemetery and pepper tree. We lit a candle in the church and visited the gift shop. A lot of history here.

A great look into the past

By Discover638525 |

If you’re on a short visit to the Oceanside area, take time!. Tour this mission it is worth every step. It is also an active place of worship as well. There is a special treat when you get into the interior part of the courtyard. I don’t want to give away but you will be amazed. Happy trails.

Attractive, Historical, and Still Active

By Sande K |

This mission has been beautifully restored from a nearly total loss, beginning in 1897. It's history is entwined with the political history of southern California, well explained and illustrated in the on-site museum. It was very nicely summarized by the greeter stationed at the entrance to the sanctuary, who also mentioned this is still a very active congregation of 6,000 registered families. Not only are regular masses held here, along with weddings and funerals, but there is also an active retreat center, postgraduate college, and 33 resident Franciscan friars. The structure is not just a tribute to the past but a vital part of today's local community.
Museum entry is $7/adult and $5/senior, well worth the fee. There is no charge for the church and cemetery.

good museum

By mmcgovernjr |

very interesting museum and church, cemetery was also very interesting. Indian artifacts were also interesting

More good than very good - but love seeing that the chapel is still actively used

By scott r |

Very friendly people, restored chapel is a treat - and the fact that you can rent a room for a day of quiet contemplation is wonderful (I'd try this if lived locally). The museum itself is fairly basic (but if you don't donate in the church, you really should pay the fee to support maintenance). When I was there at least you could not get into the courtyard to see that pepper tree or stroll among the flowers - perhaps reserved for those who've paid for the contemplation experience. Pleasant, does not take too much time, but it's not Capistrano.

Very Interesting!

By Carolannfrances |

We had friends in tiwn and decided to do the tour of the mission. The grounds are beautiful and the history was quite fascinating. I highly suggest you pay for the tour because you'd be missing out on many facts you would never have known. The fee was mot too pricey, about $10 or so for seniors. The docent was wonderful and is a history professor. Do yourself a favor and educate yourself while walking these peaceful grounds.

Eh

By anlyvitz |

Though they try, Mission San Luis Rey is not as exciting as some if the other missions in California

4th Grade made us go. So glad we did.

By Elizabeth O |

Took my daughters for a 4th grade Mission project, we had such an amazing time seeing so much history. We learned about the native Luiseno people and saw a lot of the ornate propaganda art the Spaniards used to convert them to Catholicism. There is also the Lavenderia to wander through and a cemetary.

King of the missions

By Maps661107 |

If you’re interested in CA missions then Mission San Luis Rey is Must. This Oceanside mission was the meeting place for Padres of old since it was in the middle of the mission chain. You’ll find a active historic perish church, wonderful museum, interesting old graveyard as well as a functioning conference center. Well worth the 5 miles or so detour off I-5 up Mission Ave in Oceanside CA. ENJOY!

Large peaceful mission very worth a stop

By CaliforniaLen |

We stopped at the mission when driving from Temecula toward Oceanside. It is right off the main highway. The mission church is free, unlike the mission museum next to it. The cemetery has a section for children's graves which was very touching: - closely spaced small markers with toys and other momentoes,

Wonderful Architecture

By lynnjopoto |

If you like to paint or are into photography it is wonderful. I personally like to do watercolors and it is very peaceful there. There is also a koi pond across the parking lot by the school. That is also very impressive.

Beautiful

By Arnie690 |

Well worth a visit. Lovely grounds and the chapel is very beautiful. The cemetery is very peaceful. The gift shop is full of interesting gifts

Calming and peaceful...

By Bernadette |

We had a day to visit this Mission Church. It was a nice, sunny Feb day and it was so welcoming to pray inside the church and visit the garden outside! We did not take the guided tour but we had enough to see what in it by browsing some books from their bookstore!

Historically accurate

By stampsofm |

You will enjoy the experience. There is a lot to see and interface with. See the lavanderia where the native americans washed their clothes. See the document that Abraham Lincoln signed two weeks before his assination. The mission has the largest collection of liturgical vestiments in the mission chain.

Definite must on your list while visitng Oceanside and the surrounding areas

By Jim S |

Fantastic opportunity to share the history of Mission San Luis Rey, over 220 years, with young children. A chance to visit Old California. Unlike a number of the California Missions Mission San Luis Rey has been restored and is a beautiful, restful, spiritual place to visit. The Museum has recently been totally remodeled. I highly recommend the visit. Where else can you see "in person" the actual document sighed by Abraham Lincoln returning the Mission to the Franciscan Fathers just before his assassination. The gift shop is a great place to stop and browse. The church with its 3 foot wide adobe walls is a one of a kind. Located in the inner gardens you will find the oldest Pepper Tree in the northern hemisphere. Beautiful. Definitely worth the visit.

The largest Mission

Well worth a visit, very informative, amazing site and a wonderful little gift shop also. We did the walk through by ourselves but the guided tour would be incredible.

California History at Your Fingertips

By KrisbyAnn |

Beautiful little Mission with sweet museum and grounds. Very honest about the conditions of the Native Americans who lived there...it wasn't all that pretty. The mission staff are kind and attentive. Try to go on one of the days there is a special event, eg, blessing of the firetrucks, blessing of the motorcycles, or other cultural fun.

Mission

By Deforest1917 |

Visiting the mission was only about 20 minutes away. Very informative. Saw the over 100 year old pepper tree. Visited a different kind of grave yard we usually see in Minnesota.

Peaceful

By closch7 |

Stopped by for a short end of the day visit.
So peaceful in the church with chanting playing in the background. Light a candle for $4.
Make a donation to help the upkeep.
Gift shop has interesting items both local and from South America.
Cemetery is interesting with old grave sites.

Superb visit

By Keith F |

We parked in the school car park next door but nobody seemed to mind. The mission is very peaceful and is still home to a community of Franciscan Friars. We toured the mission then wandered through the cemetery. As we walked through a hawk was perched on top of a statue and stayed as we walked past we went into the chapel and it is one is the simplest and most beautiful we have seen. A very worthwhile visit.

This is a beautiful place with lots to see. We walk the grounds and inside of the church which is well kept and beautiful. Its worth a trip to Oceanside to see.

Beautiful Mission!

By Johnnycatt |

Nice Mission to visit. I took my family this weekend, had a great time exploring the ground and understanding more of California history.

SO much history here! A must see attraction in O'side.

By BGoddard |

Another spectacular spot to wander around and think about the history of this valley. I love to bring a lunch and sit under the trees and enjoy the serenity of it all. Or just sit in the Chapel and let my eyes wander around the beauty of it all.

Who says there's no culture in CA?

By marcorH5120LB |

This is real, and original culture. Unlike the east coast who borrowed their "culture" from Europe. If some east coast hack ever says "there's no culture in CA" ... slap him/her.

Lovely, Historic Locale

By Anne G |

This well-preserved location is perfect for a beautiful Sunday Mass. The church, outbuildings, grounds and gardens are serene and peaceful.

Old, Historic, and Beautiful

By urbanguy |

The Mission San Luis Rey is the largest of the 21 California Missions. It has quite a history (all on the internet before you visit). The Cemetery was established in 1798, as was the Mission. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained.

A very nice historic place to visit.

One of the prettiest missions along the coast

By BeppeTraveler |

Mission San Luis Rey is one of the best preserved missions along the coast. The mission has been very well maintained, the grounds are cared for with love and it is still very active. Visitors can take a self guided tour, visit the gift shop, wander through the grave stones and walk throughout the grounds. The mission is still an active and thriving Church, with an active community. One of the nice surprises are the ongoing activities that take place on the Church grounds - from the local tribe activities to the annual Christmas in July event. If you are in the San Diego area, it is truly worth the drive up the coast to northern San Diego county to visit the mission. And when you do visit - take the tour, it is a thought provoking walk through just how brutal the padres were to the local Indians.

Worth the time!

By Lori M |

I have had the opportunity to visit all 21 California missions and still enjoy visiting San Luis Rey. I have visited with my family several times and have been to the mission with my daughter's 4th grade class field trips when they studied California history. The mission is well preserved, has a good assortment of artifacts to look at and well kept grounds and cemetery to explore.

Historical Mission of the famous 21 Missions of Junipero Sera

By cardinalhill |

This a a beautiful mission, formed in 1798. Much of it had been destroyed in the 19th Century but it has since been refurbished. It is an active mission with the addition of being a tourist site. The grounds are lovely and the setting is an oasis in the dense residential development around it. If you are a lover of history and enjoy colonial architecture...this is worth the side trip.

Lovely 1798 mission

By Pnemiller |

Large grounds, beautiful Church. Interesting history covered in museum with 12 rooms. Pictures, artifacts and short film tell the story of the mission including original document signed by Abraham Lincoln. Entrance fee is $7, $5 for seniors.

Great visit

By Donald S |

We tied our visit along with attending a Saturday night mass. Beautiful structures and grounds. If you're in the area you must stop and visit.

Wanderings of a traveling nurse

By Barbara S |

Loved visiting this beautiful mission. So peaceful. This is really worth a short trip.
We did not take the time to visit the museum but looking in from the door. No time this trip.

My favorite mission

By MJWalsh |

One of the newest and largest of California's missions, it's a working parish, and wonderful to visit when there is an event going on, so check out the parish website [can't include the link because of TripAdvisor rules) before you go. For some of the events, the inner courtyard is open, and the festivals often feature native cultural experiences, adobe brick making and other interesting stuff. Lots of great photo spots, a nice little museum and a decent gift shop. The grounds are enormous and beautiful in any weather. Worth a visit.

Not sure why, but expected quite a bit more on the tour. The facility is handsome ....

By dave m |

We are very glad we visited; it was beautiful and serene ... peaceful. We are gratified to see it so well preserved. We expected to be able to see more than was available. Still recommend it highly.

Historic Mission

By Sue V |

A beautifully kept old mission. The interior of the church is beautiful. The old cemetary is interesting to stroll through also if you enjoy that type of thing. A very pretty place to just sit and relax at tables on the lawn.

Small MIssion but very nice

By Rocky R |

Have visited this Mission several times. It is very small and easy to get around in. Parking is usually plentiful and free. If you are in the area, highly recommend a visit to this one!

Beautiful peaceful buildings and gardens

By viganiko |

The building and gardens are very well maintained and quiet. The little museum gives a few glimpses of the internal gardens too as well as a very visual historical overview. The kids enjoyed walking through it too. You only need to pay to go into the museum, you can go into the church, the cemetery and have a look to the garden with the pepper tree for free.

Very nice to visit but nothing very special.

By Koen P |

Nice graveyard, nice church, nice gardens. Museum ok of you love it (not me). You need only very short time to visit.

Beautiful old church

I have been to most of the mission churches in California, Arizona, and Sonora Mexico. This one is a must see if you like history. Take a day and enjoy.

Mission: Accomplished

By Mikey B |

I really liked this mission. I've been to most of the CA missions and this is one of the best. By far the best organized and visually capturing (as far as signage). Many missions put so much on display it becomes unappealing, but this one was very well-curated. Definitely worth stopping by.

Great to Visit

By Kevin M |

Always enjoy visiting old California Missions. Its a short visit but great history lesson for the family.

Beauty, history and information all wrapped up in a sense of peace

By Amanda D |

Mission San Luis Rey has a pervasive sense of peace and spirituality in a beautiful, historic setting. The tour offers an insight to the history and truth of how and why the Mission was built and why it still flourishes today. The tour guide was passionate, knowledgable and humorous whilst retaining a sense of awe at the majesty of the surroundings. Am happy to recommend it.

Interesting History of Old California

By Pat D |

This is one of the original missions constructed by the Catholic church to convert the Indians in the area and to secure the area for Spain. The museum in this mission is particularly helpful at explaining all the ups and downs and changes in ownership. The mission was rebuilt in the late 1800s after years of neglect. It is now an active parish church in addition to a historical site.

An absolute MUST see!

By Joe G |

One of my favorite places in America - reminds me of visiting cathedrals in Europe. Amazing history, architecture, art, and ambience. The main altar, illuminated by a brilliant skylight, focuses one's attention on the glorified risen Christ. A remarkable masterpiece in brilliant color.

By Travelforfun1946 |

We went to the church first. It is simply beautiful. Next to the museum. We found it to be very interesting, informative, and well kept. The courtyard is very nice. Afterwards we went to the pier to have lunch.

Tranquil

By Paul W |

Called info the Mission on our way to Oceanside. The Mission is very tranquil and has been beautifully restored after its desolation in the late 1800's. It is still a practising Mission holding daily Mass as well as other Catholic ceremony's. The gardens are well kept, the cemetery particularly so. It was a welcome diversion away from the hussle and bussle of modern day life.

King of the Missions

By phvi2617 |

San Luis Rey was one of the last California missions established and one of the most prosperous. That success is reflected in the stately church, which is very well restored. The mission museum is one of the more informative ones I've visited, and the grounds include several other historic sites including the ruins of the soldiers barracks and the lavanderia (laundry), with its indigenous gargoyle water spout.

Beautiful retreat

By kwletsgo |

Grounds are gorgeous and well kept. Staff very helpful and nice. Many different retreat options available on their website.

Good place to tour for a couple of hours

By jonmU5353EP |

Toured the Mission on our own. Very interesting history. It was a rainy day which wasn't an issue. Would definitely recommend others who haven't seen Mission San Luis Rey before.

Gem in Southern Cal

By MERoots |

Step out of the hustle and traffic with a stop at this lovely Spanish mission, part of the “string of pearls” built along the California coast. It is still an operating Catholic Church, so please be respectful, yet feel free to wander and take in the interior beauty and the architecture. It has been rebuilt several times, although the major structure is partly original and all of it restored in keeping with the original design. You can tour the museum, although we really loved the peaceful garden, a working garden attended by the Franciscan monks who live there. No matter how hot the day, it’s amazing how cool, quiet, and restorative it will feel inside the church. Come for quiet reflection and for a glimpse of authentic Old California.

Love this church

By M T |

The building is absolutely breath taking. I don’t mean by ornate objects but the feeling you get when you enter. Peaceful and such history. This is my parish church. Love coming for mass on Sundays. Every time you come their are people outside taking pictures. Very historic. Very peaceful. You will love stopping by just to walk the historic grounds.

Amazing Piece of Oceanside History

By Angela I |

The mission and hardens are beautiful. They have the oldest Pepper Tree in San Diego county, which was planted from seed in 1830. We got a behind the scenes tour on Groupon for $7 a person & it was well worth it. No only did we get to see the Mission & the grounds, but the tour guide is a historian and we learned so much about the missions history & how it came to be. The behind the scenes tour is at 1pm on Sat. and Sun. and I recommend it to everyone of any age.

Amazing and peaceful Mission

By Rachel L |

This was a very beautiful Mission one that I had never been to before. I've missed this little gem every time I've gone through the mountain from Escondido to Oceanside. I can 't believe I missed this all these years....The people there are so kind and helpful and it's a great place to say a prayer for the ones you love.

Come for the history, stay for the peace

By bgarrand |

I knew my trip to the Old Mission at San Luis Rey would be special when I saw the beautiful white silhouette of the building in the distance against a clear, blue Southern California sky. (I’m from Maine and it’s March. Get me?)

And from the moment I landed on property, I felt a certain calm and wonder that comes from being in an active but ancient sacred place. The grounds and building are beautiful from the church with its significant art collection to the rose garden, the enormous pepper tree and cloisters. I enjoyed the museum which thoughtfully tells the story of the multi-century history on the mission and its place in California history.

I understand there is a retreat center that offers hosted programs with overnight stays and access to the inner parts of the mission that are not usually open to the public. The mission even has a pool for retreat guests. Who knew??

Admission to the museum is reasonable and there is no charge to visit the property and walk around the grounds. If you’ve got a couple of hours, visiting the mission is interesting, historic and unmistakably peaceful. Totally recommend it.

San Luis Reye Mission

By Melodybr |

I highly recommend a visit on the tour option. There is so much history; without the tour with the historian, you would miss the knowledge behind the mission.

Beautiful 18th century architecture

By Nels C |

Thirty years ago when I first visited Mission San Luis Rey there were very few housing developments surrounding the site. Today, inspite of Oceanside's growth, Mission San Luis Rey and its property are an ocean of beauty and calm. The mission itself with its serene elegance is one of the loveliest of all the California missions. The church interior is impecably maintained in the style of its earliest artisans. The cemetery provides a walk through history. The museum is enlightening and the gift shop offers a plethora of mission-related items for purchase.

Mission Possible

By Daniel D |

This Mission was part of a trip for some Out of Towners. I took them there because they asked and because they had visited the San Diego Mission in Mission Valley. Their comments were centered around the similarities betweent the two locations. It is a peaceful place and if you ignore the horrific treatment of the Indians you can sense some religiosity.

Hooray

By Gardengel-IoW |

It had a little cafe! More of that in a mo.
Nice Mission, and we saw 15/21 this trip, Good museum with good lighting, some of them have been so dark. Largish church, quite simple . Good restored buildings a lot of which are now used as a retreat, which did restrict access to some of the grounds. It has the oldest pepper tree and nice garden area but you could only view it from behind the fence.
Yes, it had a little coffee shop, fairly certain the only one that did. A few tables inside and a couple outside over looking the garden. Coffee served in paper cups though and limited snacks available, but was welcome non the less.

Nice break

By Julie T |

We did not pay for the tour of the museum but we were able to admire the beautiful gardens. We were able to go inside the church during an active service. It was a very peaceful place, with people actively reflecting in the gardens. The gift shop was a treasure.

A visit to Mission San Luis Rey is a look into California’s past.

By Radiohutch |

Lynn and I and friends recently visited Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside. It is the largest mission in California, established by the Franciscan Friars in 1798! The chapel is spectacular. Mass is still being said there. The courtyard is also interesting and includes living quarters and crypts of some of the Friars as well as artifacts from the Luiseno Indians who were a part of the history here. There are some very photographic spots in the mission including a huge rose garden and cemetery.

Beautiful Piece of California History

By Colby S |

This was the mission I worked on for my 4th grade project and up till now I had never actually visited it in person. Today I decided to take the 45 minute drive down to see it and was not disappointed! The historic architecture is lovely and the church is very similar to those I've seen in Europe! It is colorful and well preserved for being built in 1798! They have the oldest pepper tree in California, planted all the way back in 1830, and various artifacts from the Spanish and Native American cultures who lived here. It is also still an active mission as the occasional monk strolls by and tends to the property. It's a very peaceful and tranquil place surrounded by the suburbs of Oceanside.

Fabulous Gardens

By GendunTsomo |

It is one of the best places in Oceanside. The gardens and grounds are lovely. I liked it better than the mission in San Juan Batista. Beautiful Mission...

Faith and History in a Lovely Package: Mission San Luis Rey

By Daphne M |

I live less than five miles from this Mission, so I have been able to spend substantial amounts of time there. From the calm, quiet walled cemetery with gravestones dating back to the 18th century to the original Mission church, decidedly non-modern but lovely, it's one of my favorite places to go and take photographs. The Lavanderia, the old washing area, has terrific gargoyles on water conduits. A worthy stop for tourists; almost a pilgrimage place for others.

Beautiful Mission

By dml718 |

Living in North San Diego county gives you the opportunity to visit many interesting places. Mission San Luis Rey, located in Oceanside, CA, is one of them. There are several buildings on the property (Mission church, chapel, retreat building + more). Tours are given (check for times) and cover the history of the Mission.

Well preserved/restored

By ptownsendj |

Love this mission. It is well preserved and lets your imagination run back into time to early missionaries and settlers. There is a museum you have to pay extra for that we did not do. This was a target of opportunity on our way down to San Diego so we only spent about 30 minutes.

Wonderful history

By Howard A |

This is one of the 21 Spanish missions in SoCal - this one in Oceanside was well maintained with a very knowledgeable staff to answer questions. Many special exhibits of its rich 200+ history, including tools, pictures and paintings.

Beautiful mission with everything like it was in the day. Very authentic. Looks of beautiful items to look at and adm.

By Ann L |

Much see Mission with so much history and a lot to see. Father Serra would recognize this Mission as it stands today. The grounds are magnificent and the story of the swallows returning is a delight and come at the right time of the year and you can witness this spectacular event. I would recommend this sight for anyone to see. No age limit

Well Preserved Mission

By Maurice K |

Set in a pleasant location not far from downtown yet a sense of tranquillity prevails. The grounds themselves are well maintained and add to the ambience of the actual mission building.

Interesting part of history

By Bookworms2010 |

This is a beautiful church with the oldest peeper tree in California on its grounds. It is one of the many missions established along the California coast.

Beautiful church, cool history, very nice staff.

By Kathy N |

I thought my 15 year old son would be bored, because this isn't really his thing, but the museum was definitely interesting enough to engage him, and he loved the architecture of the building. Most 'cool' was the document with Abraham Lincoln's actual signature on it.

It ain't a jewel

By paulbr2014 |

If you want the most awesome mission experience head north to San Juan Capistrano. Absolutely stunning. Misssion San Luis Rey is just okay. The grounds are well kept but it's not the great mission experience you might be looking for. The cemetery is a bit interesting with some of the earliest oceanside enhabitants resting there. It is an active modern cemetery as well so please respectful of that.

Don’t Miss the Lavanderia

By edspecial2017 |

A short walk from the mission is the old laundry. It is a large, Roman brick, open air area for washing clothes...and probably beating the clothes clean on the bricks! Look for the “gargoyle” water spouts. All free. You may not find it unless you ask.

Beautiful place

By Marian B |

This is a very beautiful mission with beautiful grounds inside for the cemetary. It also has the oldest pepper tree inside its grounds. :) A beautiful place to spend an hour looking around,

Neat historic mission and museum

By NOregrets-Traveler |

On a trip up the coast we stopped by to see this mission. It is very well preserved and next to a working missionary complex. There may be people using the mission so you need to respect their privacy. A very nice chapel with several nice paintings. The gardens are nice with the oldest pepper tree in California. A museum is next door and a gift shop as well. Worth a stop.

Historic Site

Visited the Mission with family members from the Midwest. Great place to relax and learn some history.

Peaceful VisiT to History

By Vera B |

A beautiful and peaceful place to visit.,I strolled through the cemetery (which does not date back to the founding), enjoyed the mission church, paid to go through the fine museum, and had a cup of tea in the tiny tea room overlooking the mission garden with the oldest pepper tree. This mission still is home to 18 Franciscan Friars and a retreat center, making it more “alive” than other missions I have visited. The picnic tables on the lawn in front would be handy for car trippers, particularly families.

Nice mission

By Michael H |

The mission is nice to walk around. I didn't like it as much as San Juan Capistrano, which seemed to have more going on. Part of this mission is blocked off. The museum part is decent, with some good artifacts. I wouldn't need to go back but great to see once.

California History

By habikat |

If you are into architecture or California history you might find this place interesting. It is nothing over the top but I am always interested in old buildings. The history of it all is sad and the loss of indigenous people is heartbreaking. Hopefully, we will not repeat this kind of history. Go for the tour or if you are religious, go for their services, I hear the acoustics are fabulous and the cemetery grounds are beautiful.

Well worth the tour!

By Phyllis K |

If you want to learn the history of this region, if you want to see the beauty inside and out of this mission, by all means take the guided tour! This gentleman knows the history and brings it to life. Inside the mission are gorgeous sights and smells, a place to relax and rejuvenate leaving you feeling well again in body, soul and spirit.

Rainy day visit

By bigjake392 |

Nice old mission in the area. Still used as a church so there were people inside praying and doing their candle thing. Gift shop is all religious items. Catholics will appreciate this more than just tourist types.

Beautiful

By Kittyspite |

So much history here. Absolutely beautiful and worth the time and Great for children. So peacefully in the gardens

Touching Experience.

By Linda H |

I have visited other missions in California. This is the most beautiful mission I have visited. The architecture and paintings are spectacular. In addition, the grounds are beautiful.

Well preserved Mission!

By romec2017 |

This Mission is very well maintained! They also have retreat center, a cemetery behind the old church, a lot of parking space, a school and a newer church on the side. This place is always busy but nonetheless a very peaceful and always a treat to visit!

Best of the Missions

By M7571QGmikeb |

I think the San Luis Rey Mission is the Best of them all! The setting is stunning, the grounds linking the Mission with the old and new cemetary and the Mission Parish church right adjacent is simply something special to behold. You have to experience it to believe its beauty, as words are just not enough!! Go visit soon...

Moving Experience

By Mike B |

This was a very moving and personal experience for me. The woman who had been my Mentor as a teenager in Georgia passed away and I wanted to come and pay my respects to her. She had gone to school here in her youth and had gotten married - so it was fitting that she would be laid to rest in this lovely place as well. I was struck by the large white stone church. There was a cemetery office, and the attendant respectfully tole me where she was "resting" in a crypt in the Assumption of the Virgin Mary statue. After visiting and having my moment, I walked around the grounds and had a visit in the museum - which was surprisingly well-done. There was even a signed letter from President Abraham Lincoln! The bronze statues on the grounds are impressive and there is a crypt for all the priests. This was a very lovely place.

Important part of California

By Sue K |

Beautiful grounds and interesting historical sight. Take time to stroll and take in the ambiance. Charming chapel and peaceful cemetery. Small nursery and gift shop an interesting stop. Two hours to do it right.

Not Photo Friendly

By James K |

No tripods allowed on grounds, no flash photos in church. Church interior is photogenic but dark, so tripod is necessary for long exposures. Asked for permission to use tripod on a one-time basis and was referred to one of the brothers at the church, who failed to return my calls.

Beautiful mission

By Theresa D |

This is one of the nicest missions in California. Large tranquil grounds, beautiful. Their cemetery is well tended to. The Friars are very friendly. They have a retreat house on the grounds and their gift shop is top of the line. They have a beautiful parish church and a nice quaint chapel in the cemetery. Will definitely visit again.

The best historical landmark in O'side

By 743kcnguyen72 |

What a beautiful church that is...from the surrounding, outside to inside and the architecture... it is a completed package and historical landmark. You don't see many church like that now a day. I am glad to be part of it. One of the rare historical landmark in North County San Diego.

California Mission Visit

By 323maureens |

We were so impressed by the history and beauty of this mission. The sheer numbers of people, animals, crops here in its most active time was so impressive. It was sad when the Mexican government took over the mission lands and left it in ruins with much of the land sold off to individuals in land grants. Abraham Lincoln returned the mission to the Catholic Church a short time before his death and after California was annexed into the U.S. The documents signed by Lincoln are displayed. This mission was rebuilt and is in full use today. There are excavations from the original buildings. The gardens are lovely and there is a cemetery on a site, also. Highly recommend this activity.

A Mission that is Steeped in Community

By Louise Masin Sattler |

This is an older mission with quite a bit of history. One of the most profound parts of this mission is that it is very much embedded in the community. A school, garden, and, cemetery included in this mission. Beautiful and culturally rich.

Beautiful mission

By Epc0451 |

Highly recommend a visit to the Mission. It is a wonderful place to walk around and
Learn about it History and the Missionary life!! Garden’s very pretty also.

Beautiful tranquil setting

By Maggy12 |

A lovely spot to wander the grounds and enjoy the quiet. The day we visited a 4th grade class was being given a tour. We learned so much about the mission by following and listening to the very competent guide answer the children’s questions.
There are picnic tables under huge oak trees the beg to be used on a warm afternoon. And a museum and gift shop for those interested. We did not see the museum.
So nice.......

A gem

By Sooz830 |

Never visited a mission so didn't know what to expect, but ended up totally charmed. The grounds, including the vast cemetery (the oldest in the area), a pepper tree planted in the 1800s, and commemorative statues, were lovely. The tour is well worth the $7 to get a glimpse back in time at the purpose and history of the CA missions. The gift shop was also very nice, with unique and interesting items and art. Doesn't take too long to see it all, maybe 90 minutes, or more if you linger. Well worth it!

Peaceful gem.

By Marcrissi |

One of the loveliest California missions in a beautiful town. Great history museum, peaceful sanctuary and gorgeous garden.

Need tickets??

By Martina C |

I'm not sure if it actually need to buy tickets. Bought tickets through TripAdvisor ahead but this place even didn't ask us to show anything. We just walked in.
It's a nice place anyway.

My favorite of the California missions I have toured. In excellent condition, beautiful grounds. Daily services are still held. Weekdays at 12 noon, check weekend times for English and Spanish. Wonderful giftshop, great variety. The church is a treasure, beautiful beyond description.

Lots of interesting history in an amazingly serene atmosphere, very peaceful. Enjoyed the history and the gorgeous chapel.

Chapel is a favorite

Love piece of Mexican history well preserved. You can feel the history when you take a quiet break in the chapel. Enjoyed visiting the grounds and old cemetery, as well.

Great California Mission

A good museum and a nicely restored mission church. This is also a Catholic parish, has a cemetery, a retreat house, and is the site of the Franciscan School of Theology. Lots to see. Beautiful.

One of California's Prettiest Missions

By hugs4u |

One may guess that if' you've seen one of California's 21 missions, you've seen them all. Not quite true! The first was established in 1769 and the final one in 1823. San Luis Rey was built in 1798 and is considered one of the most successful missions with regard to "helping" indigenous people. I put helping in quotation marks because there is a very broad interpretation on how much our native American Indians were helped or harmed. Nevertheless, important skills were taught with regard to agriculture, raising cattle, sheep and horses and, of course, wine production.

The grounds are serene and quiet. We visited Memorial Day Weekend (Saturday of) and although there were people there, we enjoyed very modest attendance and partook of a really great and informative tour. I'm mad at myself for forgetting our guide's name, but he was a very impressive historian who works at a nearby college. He is in a wheelchair, so I'm certain with that information, one could call ahead and see when he will offer tours. I highly recommend him. Lots of info, great sense of humor.

Thoroughly enjoyed visiting this mission, Recommend!

PEACEFUL AND SERENE

By SoCalOregonian |

Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, founded in 1798, has a lot of history located on its grounds; mission church, cemetery, gardens, troop barracks, lavanderia and kiln area. The church and grounds are free. Admission to the museum is $7 but there are discounts available. Military is free. Located just off highway 76, parking is free. There is also a small gift shop on the grounds.

Amazing Mission in Oceanside

By jsbyers |

This mission is one of the oldest missions in California. It is still an active Franciscan Mission. Take time to visit the church and all the grounds as well. LOVE THIS PLACE as a great place for contemplation. Lots of special events throughout the year.

Walk slowly and transport yourself back in time

By emlazo |

The crisp white walls of the mission and the Lavanderia ( a place where they washed clothes and a gathering place for the women) makes you aware how large this mission is and how many people must have been here in the past.

Here you can see the oldest pepper tree, visit the serenity of the cemetery and hear the music of the wind chime as the wind moves it.

During the celebration of Dia de los muertos, many gather in their vintage, decorated cars to honor their departed love ones, food and wares for sale abound.

You can choose to take a self guided tour for free or a guided tour for a fee to give you a detailed history of the mission.

Mission San Luis Rey de Francia

This is a wonderful place to visit, explore and appreciate. From the grounds, cemetery and museum to the church, it offers something for people of all ages. The Mission offers many events throughout the year with food and entertainment.

One of the gems along the El Camino Real

By John Sowell |

Mission San Luis Rey, the 18th of the 21 Catholic missions established in California, dates from 1798. The mission church, the third one built, was constructed in 1811.

The mission church has one of the whitest whites you'll ever see on the walls of a building. The top of the steeple, painted blue, reminds me of the Greek Orthodox Church buildings in Greece.

The mission was named for King Louis IX of France, but is pronounced loo-ee. The compound originally took up nearly a million acres of land and was known as the king of the missions.

The mission church is still used for daily masses, at noon Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Sundays. Non-Catholics are welcome to attend.

The grounds include the oldest pepper tree grown in California. A sailor from Peru brought seeds planted in 1830. The berries are not the familiar spice peppercorns. But they were used for medicinal purposes because of their antiseptic and antibacterial properties.

The mission is located just off Interstate 5, about 5 miles east of Oceanside, in northern San Diego County.

A little gem of the California missions.

By SusanR7795 |

Smaller in stature and presence than its larger cousins in Capistrano and San Diego, it is no less serene. Franciscan friars still live, worship and hold service in the restored chapel daily. The chapel has been restored to it's original plans. It remains a place of peaceful contemplation.

Slice of authentic history

By TNTNMN |

We visited mid-afternoon on a Sunday. There's a nice museum chronicaling the presence and lives of the Indians and Spaniards and friars in this area. It's self guided. There's a chapel and cemetery where you can spend some time. I visited their gift shop and found a nice glass bead bracelet for $7.00, a nice memento of the visit.

WHY I LOVE THIS MISSION

By bittenbytravelBUG16 |

I'm slightly biased on my review of the mission because I'm a member of the parish and have been for the last 16 years. The grounds of the mission are expansive and offer gardens, a cemetery, banquet hall, classrooms and two locations on the grounds where one can attend mass or go on a retreat. The mission is very welcoming and they hold many events to attract the community, whether you attend there or not.

King of the Missions

By CleopatraBunny |

While not the first, it is the only one to boast President Lincoln’s involvement in giving the mission back to the Catholic Church in 1865. Well-curated exhibits and a peaceful church (you can see the interior for free when there’s no mass). Worth the admission fee. Extensive gift shop and plenty of free parking.

Too noisy; not enough spirituality

By Alison V |

Planned a tour and attend Mass afterward. My sons (30 and 28 chronilogically) have a GREAT love for the Lord, as do I. When we went to Mass the church was noisy. There was no Spirituality. There were no Stations of the Cross. There were no kneelers and we couldn't find the Tabernacle. Never in my life have I seen my son want to leave so bad and so frustrated bordering angry a house of God. It is usually he doesn't want to leave. We were at a loss and I respected my sons desires and we left.

Dia de Los Muertos here is amazing

By Heather T |

this is the place to spend the day remembering and sharing those that are not on this plane any more.

stunning architecture on a sunny day

By Patti W |

This is one of many missions I have toured in CA, however this one because of its size, landscaping and well maintained exterior walls was especially stunning on a sunny day with blue sky as the backdrop to white stucco walls. The interior is unique in that the dome once was lit with candle as a sort of light house to those looking for the mission at night, The entrance fee is $7 without tour, however the man selling tickets provided very good information about highlights to look for once inside the museum.

Beautiful Historic Mission

By George Meredith |

California is dotted with historic missions but this one is special for 2 reasons. It is big, beautiful and historically gorgeous. Its still an active mission with Franciscan Mass you can attend. If you're driving by Oceanside on Interstate 5 or the Coast Highway get off at the Exit for 76 and you are only 5 minutes away. The Architecture is breathtaking and there are large grounds. You can take a self guided tour or some days a guided tour may be available. Learn important history of the early peoples and the early Mission work. There is also a nice museum store. This is a must see attraction. If you get the Oceanside guidebook there is a discount coupon.

Hidden Gem

By THarrin5 |

We had family in town and took them to see the Mission, which was a peaceful little gem! It was enough to see but not too much, has a beautiful courtyard and gardens, and is easy to get to. Highly recommend!

By DENISE L |

Went on a weekday , so not crowded , it’s large so few places to visit within . Admission was cheap. Church had several masses going back to back so when I went in it was quick in between mass. Overall beautiful place

Mission San Luis Rey

By Melisa M |

Free parking and you may enter the chapel for free. To tour the museum is $7 and worth it as it’s very informative of the history of the area and the mission. Worth a stop.

Beautiful Church and Historic Site

By Mary9821 |

The church is a beautiful example of carefully kept authentic architecture. There is daily mid-day Mass. Be sure to pay the nominal admission and tour the museum. The displays of the history of the Spanish mission are well done and informative. Beautiful setting!

Whitewashing of History

By Mom_of_Alex |

I have been to at least half of the California missions. None of them tried to whitewash history like Mission San Luis Rey. The descriptions told tall tales about how happy the Native Americans were (not "Indians as this "museum" referred to them) and how sad they were when the founder of the mission left. When I talked to the cashier about the signage, she told me that I was "opening up a can of worms" and that "there are two sides to every story" and that I should go to their website. Sorry, there is not a valid other side to genocide and enslavement of an entire group of people. If you want to visit, tour the free sites of the mission, but do not give them any money and avoid the "museum".

Beautiful Mission

By Martin S |

A very beautiful mission, worth taking the time to see and enjoy
highly recommend stopping by if in Oceanside CA.

Interesting piece of history

By rageisman |

The church is beautiful, and the museum is very well done. Fascinating to learn this part of our country's history. Don't miss this if in the area.

Mission Tour

By Tcard2013 |

I am on a Mission Tour vacation. This was my 2nd stop. The building was beautiful. This had very little to see except the outside and cemetery. If you want to pay there are 10 rooms inside to see.

A Beautiful Mission in a Beautiful Setting

By Joan T |

We were actually killing time and decided to visit the mission. It is a beautiful mission on several acres of land. It also has a section for religious retreats. Located on the land, is an area that had been used for bathing and washing clothes. It is a very serene setting with oak trees, rabbits, and squirrels. It is definitely worth a visit!

Frescoes, Family & (Koi) Fish

By LindaShirey |

This is THE mission church to visit. Not only is the church building in decent repair (with locked gates suggesting dungeons and secret passageways), but the frescoes are quite unique. The cemetery grounds are beautiful and well-kept, complete with wind chimes on the trees and a small private sanctuary that would be perfect for family ceremonies of around 30 people. The coolest part, though, is the koi pond. Just walk across the parking lot and sit on a bench, tell the kids to obey the signs to not ‘donate’ extra fish/turtles OR any food, and it is a most restful haven. Noisy or disrespectful people need not come. (We didn’t see any on our trip, but still.)

The lady at the information desk offered the fact that two Franciscan friars are on-premises, and the mission is neither funded by the diocese nor by taxes. Way to use the gifts offered to God! (I was going to say ‘self-sufficient’, but that would be an inappropriate statement about a place of worship.)

Interesting visit

By Anne12508 |

Entering the gift shop/museum on Saturday morning 28th, the lady ahead was behind the desk and on the computer.
I asked if we may look around and she looked up and said No! 'the retreat and gardens are closed and for the use of those using using the Retreat. The fathers need their privacy too.
The gift shop, church and cemetery are free and museum is charged $3 for children over 5 - $7 for adults'

The church interior is unique with the walls painted using natural dyes.
Ceilings have wooden beams and some with ornate drawings.
My son entered the museum and said it was very interesting. We had planned to see the museum but felt very unwelcome so retreated to the cemetery area which was very tranquil.
Brace yourselves for a brusque reception!
Otherwise good.

Just Beautiful & Very Historic

By Russell A |

This was the third Mission we had visited this summer & probably the last this year.
It's still a place to worship, and has a retreat center.
The preservation is second to none, and the grounds are beautiful.
Stop in, learn something, and enjoy while feeling the history of this Mission.
You will not be disappointed.

Peaceful

By McGonagall |

We started at the cemetery, the front part of which is a peaceful, uncrowded rectangle of old graves. One side is a wall of names, too small to be for bodies, so I’m assuming they were for memorials or urns? We had just missed the tour guide and none of us had room on our phones for the free app, so when I go back one day, I will make it a point to TAKE THE TOUR. The museum is worth the 7$ fee and dumps you out (like Disney) into the gift shop. There are lots of nice Christian, specifically Catholic, gifts. I liked the free machine where you can send digital post cards and ask for prayer requests. The video inside the museum was informative, just a little muffled in places. The only complaint I had was that you were not allowed to walk in the gardens. The bells ringing, the wind whispering through the trees, the water fountains bubbling... so restful.

Love seeing the California Missions

By DAR051944 |

This mission is beautiful and well worth a visit. There is a small museum that's a must. Great history.

Beautiful complete historical mission

By Dr. Tim |

I am currently on a motorcycle trip to visit all 21 Missions of California. Throughout my life I have visited most of them and San Luis Rey De Francia in Oceanside is one of the most complete and finest restorations of all the Missions. It is one of the last missions founded and is number 18 of 21. It was established in 1798 by Padre Fermín Lasuén. There is a daily Mass at noon. Allow a few hours for the museum, gift shop and guided tour. Lots of parking, no stairs and easy walking is a real plus too!

very interesting

By Ed H |

was very impressed with the history and the condition of the mission and the grounds. the size alone makes it worth visiting

A must if you are in the area

By Carolina0707 |

This is one of The most impressive Missions in California
.the Museum attached to it is full of fascinating history, including an excellent video exploring the early colonization of Southern California and its native inhabitants.

Interesting

By Dana V |

Worth taking time to visit especially if you enjoy seeing California missions. The people were all nice that were working there. There are lots of interesting stories being told here.

Pure Solitude

By CGDoc |

What an enchanting mission to visit in Southern California. The massive grounds are very tranquil and a great escape after navigating the hectic freeway systems of Southern California. The museum was excellent and describes in detail the massive reconstruction that was needed to bring life back to this historic mission. The gift shop was an extra treasure which we didn't expect to be of the quality which it was.

Walking Back into Early California History

By TravePpro |

A lovely Spanish Mission on the El Camino Real trail run by the Franciscan Friars is both a museum and a working Catholic church. It was completed in 1815.The church itself is a simple design with a beamed ceiling and a lovely bell tower. Its a peaceful place perfect for contemplation. Mass is held at 12 noon Monday through Friday. Afterwards you can visit the museum containing Native American, Spanish and Mission artifacts. Behind the scenes tours are given at 1 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. You'll need about 2-3 hours to see the church, museum, and grounds which are popular to host Weddings, Christenings, Funerals, and Baptisms.

Among my Favorite California Missions

By David D |

I have visited all 21 Spanish missions in CA, and San Luis Rey remains one of my favorites. It has attractve architecture and a well organized museum. Further, it is in a semi-rural area (although suburbs are encroaching) and retains some of its original out buildings and grounds. Restoration and preservation are well done. My only complaint is that the museum tells the story of the mission from a very Eurocentric/Church-centric perspective, i.e., there is no suggestion that the natives might have preferred to keep their own culture and way of life rather than being rounded up and converted to Catolicism.

Gorgeous Grounds Worth Taking In

By ReadRibbet |

Easily accessible outside of Oceanside with plenty of free parking, the Mission San Luis Rey is a beautiful destination. The grounds are completely open and only the museum has an entrance fee. The historic church can be visited free (donation encouraged). There is plenty of space for an outside picnic. Check out the schedule of events and you may find a special celebration on the grounds as well (Setting up for Day of the Dead celebration when we were there.) The small gift shop has artifacts and souvenirs. You don't have to spend a lot of time (though you can) but it is worth taking in.

Nice Mission!

By Rob M |

W visited Mission San Luis Rey yesterday and were very impressed! The buildings have been restored and the grounds are freshly manicured. The church itself is beautiful. A great experience!

Museum Fun

By Samantha W |

In the very beginning there were rattles that my daughter (6 months) could play with. The history was interesting and artifacts they have are mesmerizing. There’s a gift shop at the end and workers were kind.

Beautiful

By crystalm5252 |

We did the self guided tour on a Sunday afternoon. It was nice & quiet. I appreciated the history of the native americans.

Spent the day enjoying no phone at all

By Jak-cra |

Signed up for a day for meditation and no phone. The grounds are nice with very interesting plant species. The history there is quite unique, I learned a lot. I was taking a week away from my life, this was one step. Since I am from the east coast, I feel, like I am in some foreign land in California every time I go. This just added a new piece to the puzzle.

Great trip back in history

By happytraveler2010_10 |

Coming to the mission is like taking a trip back in California history. The church is very quiet and a great place to be peaceful. The mission is an example of architecture and history from a time long ago.

Beautiful place

Lovely a must see!

By Bigredred |

Just beautiful. Very well kept and restored. There is a lot of information through building. The grounds are amazing. Small but very nice and affordable gift shop. If you go to Oceanside or San Diego take time to see the mission! You won’t be disappointed.

Loved the history in the museum and some absolutely lovely artifacts. The grounds are well maintained. It is a working church with mass daily. The retreat gardens are beautiful. A walk through the cemetary is a true walk through time. The entire experience was peaceful and tranquil

Beautiful mission

By Goldendoodle400 |

We had an hour to tour the mission. Took the self guided tour. Admission required. Displays were well done and was followed by a video which basically said the same things as the prior displays. Very interesting. The restored church was absolutely beautiful. A gal sitting st the entrance approached us and told us a few things about the church. Very friendly and informative. Cemetery was open but we only stepped a few yards in and looked at some old, old, grave markers. In the distance we could see more current graves. Serene setting. Restoration of this church was one of the best I’ve seen after touring several missions in Texas and CA. Well worth the stop.

Very Beautiful Church

I have been visiting all the California missions doing a photography project of them. This one is really nice. It is large and photographs well. Beautiful church, serene cemetery, beautifully kept. Nice status. A great tour of the museum and inner grounds. Very enjoyable.

Excellent two to three hour visit to understand the mission system in California. The church, museum, and grounds are well maintained and staffed.

Get a Sense of History and Tranquility

The chapel is lovely with Gregorian chants in the background and the mission museum gives a real sense of who was here before the white settlers and how much the local Native Americans lost as their land was taken. There is also an excellent history of the mission, how it was destroyed and rebuilt. The grounds also include a gift and coffee shop and cemetery.

A beautiful stop for history

By Ashley Mantras |

If you happen to be here when the school buses are not then it is a beautiful place to walk around and learn of the history. It's a close drive to the beach and a quick day trip from San Diego. If you are thinking of doing a Missions day while on vacation this is totally doable.

A piece of California's history

By K. Jackson-Thayer |

I had an opportunity to stop by the Mission San Luis Rey during a recent trip to Oceanside, and it was stunning.

Do yourself a favor and take the time to participate in the guided tour. The history of the Mission is made even more real and tangible with the assistance of the Mission staff and their in-depth knowledge of the history, architecture, and organization of the Missions. You can access particular areas of the Mission that aren't available to the public while on the guided tour, and you gain a deeper appreciation of this Mission as well as the somewhat complicated history of the Mission system.

Terrific Catholic community

We just changed to this parish and have found the Priests and community are fantastic. The "all culture" 8am mass on Sunday morning is very unique and the choir sings beautiful ethnic songs. Highly recommended anyone attending this parish.

I love to stop in any church, but to see one with such history attached to it is really worthwhile. Don’t miss it!

Stroll the grounds for free.

Mission has lovely landscaping of California plants. Nice place to enjoy the outside. Cemetery is interesting. Nice garden by retreat center. We did not view the museum.

Lovely mission with an informative museum. There are also retreats and “quiet days” you can book at the mission.

Interesting to see all the old architecture, gravestones, and the oldest pepper tree in California.
