Famous American Landmark was great to see in person from afar and at the site

By free2venture |

This was our ending spot to our day that started at Custer State Park. We first saw the presidents in all of their sculptured/carved glory from Iron Mtn Hghwy which was a nice intro. This has to be the lowest, popular site cost activity one can do out there. I'm not sure why it is so cheap because they could make a lot more, but I'm certainly not complaining. It is essentially $10 to enter and park. We parked in the parking garage. From there, one can climb up the stairs or take an elevator and then cross a road and be there. Restrooms are at the start, followed by all the state flags, and, of course, up close views of Mt Rushmore.
I think we arrived around 6 and to make it even more educational and/or fun, let the kids compete to find our state flag. Then, we took more pics and went on the Presidential Trail. We followed it to the point where it said it would be a lot of steep stairs. Considering we just hiked and these bad legs just navigated a lot of downward narrow areas of rocks on a trail, I decided I was good for the day on climbing down a bunch of stairs, but we seemed to see a lot before this point, including the first surprise I will not give away, but I thought was nothing until it was and felt delighted at the view.
For whatever reviews say skip going to the site and just view from the road because going is rather boring, I disagree. If like us, one of your main reasons for going to the area is Mt Rushmore, then do it far and wide and up close. The trail there is nice and pretty peaceful too. They have a lighting and ranger talk at night, but we had a full day so left about an hour or so before it started, but I heard it was nice and informative. Custer SP was my favorite thing out of what we did in SD, but to see, in person, such a widely known and celebrated American landmark was wonderful!

Mount Rushmore a great site to see

By Phyllis T |

Drove to this by car and it was wonderful... Great parking too great view beautiful National Memorial and very interesting to see.... If you stay until 8 pm they have a beautiful light show to see... a must see.

Mt Rushmore is a MUST do!

By Teresa G |

Absolutely a MUST do in the Black Hills area! Drive Iron Mountain Road in the direction from Hermosa to Mt Rushmore, if possible, for views. You'll see Mt Rushmore framed by a couple of the tunnels if you drive in that direction. Admission to the monument is $10/car, $5/car if you are 'seniors', a real bargain. Your ticket is good for 1-year IF you have it 'validated' before leaving the monument. There is a nice parking deck, also a cafe, small book store & a nice gift shop on site. Be sure to view the very informative film in the theatre, which is about 20-minutes in length. We were unable to go back for the nightly lightning ceremony, due to time constraints, but were told it is worth it.

Phenomenal feat of engineering!

By Janet v |

Phenomenal feat of engineering and one wonders how the sculptor Gutzon Borglum pulled it off! Truly inspiring and thoroughly worthwhile driving 9 hours to see! At night the faces that are lit up are in stark contrast to the darkness of night.

Visiting Mount Rushmore was an experience I will cherish forever. As I stood before the sculptures of Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln, I couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of awe and appreciation.

We stayed for the lighting ceremony. A park ranger gave a speech. There was a video on each of the Presidents and they called down all the veterans to participate in the flag lowering ceremony. You will leave feeling patriotic.

a memorable place

By Lorna B. |

We visited here as part of a two-week-long road trip from our home in southeastern PA to the Dakotas in the summer of 2023; since we were in the Black Hills area for several days, we made sure to plan a visit here--it was a highlight of our entire trip. Not only is this memorial stunning to see in person but the entire visitor experience was enjoyable.

We began at the Visitor Center, which contained very interesting and informative exhibits, including “The Meaning of Mt. Rushmore,” an interesting timeline of the nation’s expansion and an explanation of why these four particular presidents were featured, i.e. Washington--birth, Jefferson--expansion, Lincoln--preservation, Roosevelt--conservation. Being a history buff with an interest in the American presidents, I enjoyed learning about the design and construction of this place. The only criticism about the Visitor Center is that the video shown there is old and needs to be replaced with one with better production features.

We ate in the air-conditioned Carver’s Café, which is large and has lots of seating. Food court options include specialty coffees, donuts, pizza, fresh sandwiches, dinner plates, grill items, and more; there was also an ice cream shop and food truck onsite.

There are numerous areas for viewing the carving and to get great photos. We walked part of the woodsy Presidential Trail until the multiple steps begin (I wished they used ramps instead of steps). We found the parking setup very convenient; there are several levels and elevators to the main entrance. The gift store here is very nice, with beautiful Mt. Rushmore items for sale. We appreciated that the hours of operation for all parts of this NPS site are very extended, making it easy for visitors to fit in a visit here even during a packed vacation itinerary.

It is an awesome site and worth visiting. The walkway is also amazing as it has a monument for each of the states that advise when they joined the union. Also the state's flag is displayed. Very informative.

By Mitch M |

Great view of course, neat walkway up to it with all the state flags. Lots of diverse people visiting. Few little paths to walk down. But if you have kids beware there is pretty much nothing for them to do so prepare for a short trip.

By Mindy |

Mount Rushmore is an amazing sight to see. It’s just mind boggling…how’d they do that?!? Once you get past that, it’s just not worth it. They charge too much for parking considering there’s nothing else to see or do and it’s very crowded and touristy. I told my friends if they ever go just drive past it and save your money

By rewlrw53 |

I didn't want to go! We took our RV and stayed at Custer State Park. Got to say I enjoyed Mt Rushmore, the nighttime celebration of veterans. And the rest of the BlackHills were amazing. Biked theGeorge S. Mickelson Trail. It was worth the trip. It's so much more than walking in and seeing Mt. Rushmore. Crazy Horse museum was outstanding.

By Tammy R |

It was worth the time to stop in and see. We went early in morning so nothing was open except to see the monument. I loved crazy horse and glad we had more time there to look around. I’m sure movie, etc is good at Mount Rushmore, just wasn’t open. Went early to avoid crowds and it worked.

If you can't see it from the road - do not pay

By yazdragonfly |

The day we visited was a cold, rainy one. Never having been here, we didn't know the monument can be seen from the main road. We entered and paid the parking, but were never told "hey, you won't be able to see the monument today". They were more than willing to take our money, have us park, walk up the main walkway, only then to realize you could not see this ginormous monument as the weather had dropped a giant cloud over it. We entered the first 'ranger office' to ask where we needed to go to see it only to be told "oh, you would have already seen the monument from the road". We have never been to S. Dakota and no idea how large this was. We were beyond disappointed. We left, and tried to go back the next day. When we arrived the next day, we knew what to expect, yet once again, no monument, but the ticket agent was more than willing to take more money. We said we had the pass from the day before (I think the ticket is good for 7 days - maybe), and then she replied, "oh, you can go ahead and park". We said, you can't see the monument, and at this point she just nodded and agreed. So disappointed that this is how the park handled our visit. In these conditions visitors should be told the monument is not visible and allow anyone who wants to enter to do so for free. I'm sure most visitors will just go into the gift shop and buy something to remember their disappointing trip, the park would still make money without charging people to park for something they aren't going to see.

Because it's on the road

By carine-2929 |

Because the site is located at the exit of Custer State Park, a small hour on site is more than enough; visit included in the america pass.

By DutchTX |

Great place to visit; take the short trail to get closer; it is not strenuous, ys there are stairs but manageable. The parking ticket is valid for an extended period, and you should go for the evening light show too.

A "Bucket List" Experience That's Worth It!

By VandyJo |

Mount Rushmore, like Plymouth Rock, is an iconic national landmark that is on most Americans' "bucket list." Unlike the boulder in Massachusetts, the famous faces does not disappoint.

The approach alone was a surprise stunner. Along Route 224, rising up from touristy Keystone, visitors are greeted by a different perspective of the four presidents. In fact, it looks as if Teddy and Abe are having a private conversation. Wonder what they're saying!

Once at the memorial, a parking garage is available, which provides some covered spaces, keeping vehicles cooler on hot summer days. Parking is usually $10 per car.

For those with mobility issues, there are elevators and ramps available. Also, the Avenue of Flags leading to the viewing area is flat and easy to maneuver.

Restrooms are available in two major areas. Gifts shops and bookstores abound. Theaters provide informative videos.

For those wishing a closer view of the presidents, there is a .6 mile trail. Be warned. There are many stairs.

The grounds are immaculate. The natural beauty surrounding the shrine is stunning.

Our experience was totally favorable. The September day we visited was mild and sunny. The crowd was manageable. On a super busy, oppressively hot summer day where parking was difficult, our impression might have been less positive.

One final pleasant surprise was a profile view of Washington along Route 224 if you travel away from the memorial en route to the Crazy Horse Memorial.

went back soooo beautiful. best roadtrip ever for second time. will go back god permitting.unbelievavble scenery...

Repeat customer to the monument

By fradLeechburg |

Beautiful- wonderful- awe inspiring- America!! Breathtaking- the visitor center can’t be missed and the rangers talks are insightful!

By Audrey D |

This was so amazing and my 5, 8 and 11 yr old boys loved it! It's a transforming experience when you take time to really think about the people represented and those who built it. Those who helped shape our country are shaped into stone.

By Kuvasz1988 |

Go early as crowds are immense. It gets very very busy The views are unreal. Take lots of photos. Parking is $10 and $5 for seniors. Enjoy!

By ms julie |

National Monument and history. The time it took to carve, the adjustments that had to be made and the unfinished plans yet to be completed. The exhibits very informative. The Avenue of Flags, the FA Plaza, the Upper Plaza and all the shops very clean and well taken care of.

MOUNT RUSHMORE MUSEUM

By Giovanna G |

A place to visit famous all over the world, where the faces of four great American presidents are carved into the rock, Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Rosevelt.

By pattyH16 |

After visiting the Badlands, very beautiful and impressive to the Black Hills (rather green).
There's Mount Rushmore.
Nice to see in real life.
Still impressive.

WOW

By Robert D |

Absolutely Amazing. Absolutely Amazing. How many times can I say it! You have to go words cannot describe this place.
Parking was cheap and even cheaper for seniors. A short walk and get ready to be wowed. Go man Go!!!!

Wish there was more to do

By Pukeonthestreet |

I'll admit we were too tired from our travels to do the hike all the way closer. It was cool to see for sure. I feel the sketchy history of it is ignored. The parking pass is good for a year if you have someone to give it to.

By WH |

This place is beautiful! It is all American!! We walked the trail which was awesome. We were able to see Mt. Rushmore from different views and get amazing pictures. It is lots of steps but totally with it. Even if you can’t walk the trail you can take amazing photos from observation deck. The parking garage is very well organized. It’s easy in and out.

Go here - Feel good

By Retired Not Soon Enough |

God Bless America. Family from South Dakota and went a few times as a kid. Loved it then - love it more now. It's a place to go and feel good about what America is all about.

By JZx4 |

The excellent view never changes. Could go back year after year. Parking was easy in the covered garages. Documentary was excellent.

By Christine C |

Even better in real life. We went right when it opened and there was only a few cars. If you don't like crowds, this is a must do. Side note, after you park your car you will need to get a ticket from a machine... you don't need to wait and get one from the floor you parked your car on, as that is what most everyone does. You can go to the next level on your way out of the parking garage on your way walking to Mt Rushmore. When you get there you will not be disappointed. My husband was extremely reluctant to take the hike on the presidential trail because of the distance and amount of stairs, but he was glad he did. You get breath taking views from every angle and the scenery is unbelievable. There are plenty of benches, so you can take as many breaks as you need. After we made the trail and made our way to the gift shop, which was about 10am, it had gotten quite crowded. We were able to make it to the gift shop, but the lines were so long we almost left without our treasure, but my husband noticed a counter in the back with no one in line and we were able to get in and out. So keep your eyes open!!

Impressive Patriotic Site -- Visit At Your Leisure

By RetiredTravelerTN |

Our visit to Mount Rushmore was everything we hoped. I won't restate everything that has been written, I'll just say it's worth going both day and evening if you have the time.

Parking is easier than we expected. The current fee is $10 ($5 for seniors and active military). Be sure to activate the ticket at the exit gate if you want to return and use the same parking pass. As seniors, we enjoyed several hours with day and evening visits for only $5. The National Park website give a good explanation of the process.

The entire memorial site is very photogenic. A fun photo op can be found at the flag for your own US state or territory.

Please don't RED/BLUE this magnificent memorial

By Retired Not Soon Enough |

Returned to Mt Rushmore decades after visiting as a kid. I was excited to go and while there after wandering around - especially during the nightly light show - I fought back proud tears. So proud to live in this country and all it stood for and can stand for.

By FuMattiaPascal |

you can only see it from afar, but you only pay 10 dollars for the annual possibility of parking, nearby and well-organized parking, beautiful, off the beaten track..

A bucket list item

By PathfindersWV |

A bucket list item and it did not disappoint! One of the nicest visitor areas I have been too. Had to try Thomas Jefferson’s ice cream and it was worth it. The cafe was nice and the presidential trail was beautiful. A lot of stairs but benches along the way for rest breaks. The monument itself was awe inspiring and exceeded all the pictures we see. This surely a gem in the black hills .

The Keystone and Hermosa Churches are planning the 76th Easter Sunrise Service in the Amphitheater at Mount Rushmore Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024, at 7 am.
One of the most awe-inspiring and spectacular sights is watching The Faces emerge from the darkness, and they become bathed in morning light between 5:30 and 6 am. We arrived at 5 am last year with our flashlights. In any event leave plenty of time to walk from the parking garage. There is no parking fee until 9 on Easter Sunday.
Eventually last year, over 3500 people joined us, crossing this event off their bucket list. Some had to spread their blankets on snowdrifts since the huge army of snow shovelers could only clear so much snow off benches and out of aisles in the few days before the service. The shovelers rallied after two heavy snows struck that week. So far, the long-term forecast looks promising. No one anticipates any teens building a huge snowman this year. However, bring a blanket and dress warmly.
Coffee, hot chocolate and rolls should be available near the Avenue of Flags. Carver’s Café will offer breakfast afterwards.
The Presidential Trail is an easy walk, and it offers views of The Faces from different angles. It is worth the trip to Sculptor’s Studio, but be aware there are a lot of steps. The Sunrise Service originated in the Sculptor’s Studio in 1947. Lois Halley was at that service in 1947 and played God Bless America. Lois no longer plays for the service, but she was there last year where she was honored for her decades of playing the piano. The Halley Family Singers led the group a cappella singing God Bless America to Lois.
Everyone is invited to come and sing God Bless America a cappella, then go enjoy breakfast with your family.

Truly Iconic

By Jack |

Mount Rushmore is an icon of American History showcasing the four great American Presidents (Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt) carved into the granite cliffs of the Black Hills in South Dakota. You have to visit at least once in your lifetime as it is amazing. I was in awe every second I was there. I highly recommend visiting here.

By djaungst66 |

Arrived around 7 AM and was treated to a very intimate viewing of Mt. Rushmore. The grounds were empty which afforded me easy access to trails and viewing outlooks.

After wandering the grounds and getting some pics, I circled back to get my Passport Stamps and view Sculptor's Studio which is not to be missed.

By Paul G |

A must see. it was amazing to look at and just a awesome masterpeice. A bucket list location checked off. But want to see it again

It was just okay

By ForTheStory |

Is it cool? Yes. Is it a tourist trap? Yes. Is it a must see? No. It feels really hyped for what it is. Parking is $10 and then you walk up.

By angeleyes27 |

I find Mt Rushmore impressive. It is $5 for seniors and $10 for non seniors for parking which is good for the year but no other admission fees. There is a gift shop, restaurant and theater with a film here. The night program lights up the sculpture figure heads and pays tribute to veterans. I don’t understand the fury about Mt Rushmore. Every person and country has flaws but they serve to inspire us to improve. I recommend Mt Rushmore

By Sara S |

I enjoyed visiting Mount Rushmore much more than I expected! The paved trail is excellent and you get different views of the mountain. Be sure to watch the short film in the visitor's center and if visiting in the summer come back at night for the lighting ceremony! My husband is former military and it was a special experience getting to go down on stage with other service members to retire the flag.

A Bright Day At Mount Rushmore

By A.C. Rumamby |

Based on my notes, the family included my elderly father, aunt, 2 sisters and niece arrived safely at Mount Rushmore National Memorial on 29th May 2024 after a road trip from Casper, Wyoming starting from initial journey at San Jose, California on 27th May 2024.

The weather was sunny and bright that we could clearly observe the figures of the 4 US Presidents.

However, the figures were not as large as I thought initially.

Furthermore, the premises was clean albeit the lift in the parking lot was out of function.

In addition, Mount Rushmore was one of the places to visit in my bucket list since roundabout 25 years ago.

I’m glad I finally had the opportunity to visit such landmark.

Be sure to go to the night program and lighting ceremony also!

By Resort48833458210 |

This is a "must do" if you are in the area. Also, be sure to go back for the night program.. it's well worth it. Only cost is $10 for parking, and that pass is good for one year. We also really enjoyed hiking around and going to the sculptor's workshop. The Thomas Jefferson vanilla ice cream is a bit on the pricey side, but worth it also. As a side note, no pets are allowed.

By Jerrianne W |

The Black Hills in the fall is something to see! There's a lot less traffic so you can take your time as you wander through the canyons on those hairpin twists and turns!

By Ed D |

The weather was clear, so the view was incredible. I recommend renting the tour wands, which describe portions of the hike to the base and the history. We did not make the hike but found the recordings informative. There is a movie and exhibits below the Heroes Plaza that I highly recommend. This was one of the pinnacles of our 3800-mile road trip and well worth the drive. Be prepared to walk from the parking deck and to pay for parking (take your ticket with you). The on-site café and ice cream shop are pretty good. Watch the weather; if fog or rain is forecast, you may want to pick another day to visit – almost everything is outside, and the carving may be obscured by poor weather.

Indescribable

By Konstantin |

This monument is so imposing and impressive, an absolute must if you are in the region and not only for American tourists. I don't have the words. A small loop trail goes along the monument and you see the presidents from different angles.
Meanwhile, the place is very touristy with restaurants, souvenir shops and parking costs 10 dollars. This was not the case about 10 years ago. I can hardly part with this place, that's how excited I am.

Very Interesting.

By Alexa S |

This is a great location and I love this place and how it has the presidents. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend this place. The story is very interesting about Mount Rushmore. I would highly recommend the night show.

It’s Mount Rushmore….You Must Go!

By punky_one |

I mean…. It’s Mount Rushmore. You have to go see it! It’s incredible! I can’t imagine what it took to create this masterpiece. We stood there for about a half hour just staring at it in Awe. The walk up to the monument is lined with flags to add to the majesty of it all. Incredible place. The information center and other areas have the history of the monument along with models and equipment used to create it. We didn’t spend a lot of time reading but you could spend hours here if you wanted to read everything on display. Nice gift shop with some unique Mt Rushmore items too. Had the Thomas Jefferson ice cream at Carvers. I have to say it was good and not just ordinary vanilla ice cream. Price was reasonable too. 2 scoops for the price of one when we went. Only other comment would be that it was $10 to park but admission was free. You grab a ticket and then take it to a ticket machine to pay. Ours was credit card only but I did read a sign that there was somewhere to pay cash. The attendants were right there to help if you have questions. Go see it. You won’t regret it.

By MAP12 |

I've been to see Mt. Rushmore several times and stand in awe each time I see it. IMHO it's a great work of art. We attended the lighting and I wasn't too impressed with it. A ranger giving a little speech and then calling all Veterans to come onto the stage for the singing the National Anthem, and flipping the switch to light up the sculptures. I enjoyed the night show at Crazy Horse better.

Mt Rushmore in October

By #the_vacationist |

Awesome! A must visit! Beautiful day, clear blue sky’s and few people. To get the best pictures, these weather conditions are a must. Additionally, get there as early as possible to get light on Theodore’s face (like before noon). Enjoy!

Awesome! Truly Presidential!

By C.D. |

Awesome! A must see stop while traveling in South Dakota. Worthwhile to go to all the places along the path. There is a sculptors museum, movie, book stores, gift shops, and a restaurant. Plan to stay a few hours.

By LeAnne D |

The first time I saw Rushmore you could drive in, park in a small lot and walk over to a viewing area. The next time, the lot was larger, but it was still a good experience. This year I took a family member to Rushmore. They liked it but for me, the parking garage, chaos, excess traffic had me wishing I had not returned. If you've never seen, do it.

By GoAlong2 |

The giant carved faces on the mountain are awesome. We arrived in the morning and easily found paid parking in the garage by the visitor center. The main plaza and walkways direct your view toward the mountain. The visitor center is large with multiple buildings and includes a restaurant, theater, and informational displays. We also hike the loop trail down by the base of the mountain. There are a lot of steps and it is fairly exposed to the sun, so take water on a warm day. We enjoyed learning about the history of the area and viewing the mountain.

presidential trail

By prasanna s |

If you are taking the presidential trail, my advice is that to start the trail from left side pathway.By Doing like this, you can avoid climbing more stairs

Must do!

By NomadicFamilyLife |

It's Mount Rushmore! What more is there to say? It's a place you have to see if you're in the Black Hills. Stay for the evening lighting ceremony.

Excellent and well worth a visit

By perky88 |

This was on my wife’s bucket list to do / do we did it
We came from UK so no direct flights but did a few other cities

It’s smaller than I imagined but still an excellent and well worth place to visit

South Dakota is just a great place - I have visited the USA over 50 times and never saw something like this as used to the cities and tourist things

Well recommend for anyone to see this and this part of the US

Awesome place, but very busy!

By James H |

Mount Rushmore is a popular visit for many tourist and families. Many come to the Black Hills just to see Mount Rushmore. I was here in 1982 and I’m back here in 2024. Mount Rushmore never fails to disappoint. The parking area is much approved over 1982. On June 17, all five parking area were full,, so you know this is a popular place. There is a nice promenade line with the state flags leading up to a view of the monument. We were there when it was pretty cloudy and it was quite cold for June, maybe about 53°. The day before we couldn’t even see the monument because it was raining and it dragged the clouds down, so it was it was impossible to see the monument, but today we can see it with many m
other people from other countries and all the 50 states. The monument is quite an awesome site. But for first time visitors, many are surprised about how small the presidential figures are. Wonderfully sculpted, but because they’re further up on the mountain from the promenade, they look smaller. When in the picture that you’ve seen of Mount Rushmore, it looked huge. So that is kind of what you expect when you get here, but you’re so far down the mountain-they seem to be a smaller. Still an amazing site. We didn’t try the trails because it was raining a little bit and we’re a bit older like in our 70s . But I have heard that the trails offer a very good view of the of the presidential sculptures up there on the mountain..Enjoy the visit!

The gift shop is excellent!

Don't miss this

By Marex |

A wonderful, historic and fun place to visit. The heads are larger than expected and a feeling of awe overcame me when I viewed them.

A True National Treasure!!

By Rick B |

WOW, what else can you say. What a National Treasure!! We have never been here before and was just in total "Aww" when we saw the Memorial. The walking trail was wonderful. Has a gift shop that is very well stocked. Definitely a must to see, so glad we did.

Very Nice

By LE368 |

Took my Dad on a trip to South Dakota because he has always wanted to see Mt Rushmore. We followed the Guide Along app and used the Iron Mountain Road so we could see Mt Rushmore through the tunnels.

We ended the tour at Mt Rushmore then came back a few hours later for a very nice, patriotic lighting ceremony. Well worth seeing.

We actually came back our last morning before we flew back home for a third visit. We had the place almost to ourselves since we got there around 8 am.

Long time wish fulfilled

By BrakiWorldTraveler |

This was our 9th USA road tour and despite my great wish I could never before include Mt. Rushmore into any itinerary. Reason is obvious - it's in the middle of nowhere - around half the way between Seattle and Chicago, with nothing to see nor do from either direction.
This time we made it starting from Denver and including Yellowstone, Utah and northern Arizona in our 15 days mid West trip. Even now, from Denver as a closest big city it included long, pretty boring driving through Nebraska plains, but it was worth it.
We arrived around 4 PM and were instantly disappointed - not with the monument, but with weather. It was rainy, cloudy and misty - the monument was INVISIBLE, hidden in clouds with empty parking lot and no one inside - except tour buses I felt sorry for as they had no second chance. Though we intended to visit that day along with the night illuminations we skipped it.
We had our second chance in the morning - rain stopped during the night, it was only cloudy and later even little bit sunny.
Got there very early, around 8 AM and I strongly suggest that. First, you'll find your parking spot immediately, second more important - there're very few visitors at that time and tour buses didn't arrive yet. When we were leaving around 11 AM the place was packed, impossible to make a proper photo.
We stayed those 3 hours and that's an appropriate time to do all attractions:
- Walk the Flag avenue with all 50 state flags and Union joining date plaques,
- Take the iconic photo from the terrace,
- Do the Presidential Loop for different perspectives,
- Visit the Visitor center, watch the movie about construction as well the Museum,
- Visit well stocked and reasonably priced Gift shop.

There's more here that I thought there would be! Plan to be here a couple hours so you can walk the path around the area, enjoy the views, and even get something to eat in the cafe! We really enjoyed this trip, and can't wait to go back some day.

By SueBusse |

I guess I was expecting more when we visited. The actual memorial is very far away from the viewing area. We were not able to get a photo of us with the memorial in the background as it was too far away. There is a nice gift shop and a row of food vendors. There is also a fairly extensive presentation of the construction of the monument. We were not able to enjoy it as it was very, very busy the day we visited. The walkway with all the state flags was pretty neat. The parking situation was silly. There's a garage that you pay $10 ($5 if over 62) and everyone was queued up at the pay kiosk. There are many more once inside and you can even pay at the gift shop (I bought a shirt and the cashier asked if I had paid my parking yet).

Just what we expected

By Catherine S |

Perfectly run facility. Easy directions to parking, beautiful walking approach to the monument. Plenty of bathrooms, visitor centers, big gift shop. Avenue of flags leading to monument impressive. Presidential trail a pretty walk. (We did not do the 400+ stairs part. ) Grab a junior explorer scavenger hunt booklet (they offer for different ages, including grown ups) and have some learning fun. Overall, very impressive monument.

By ninettejohnson |

Spent a morning in this truly iconic landmark. No entrance fee just $10 parking fee. Half price for concessions.
As expected it’s very well kept & staffed by exceptional employees. There is so much to observe including exhibitions & historical facts surrounding the creation of the sculptures.
Don’t get put off by the signs regarding 422 stairs around the presidential trail. It’s worth the hike and you are able to get closer to the sculptures as well as not missing the Sculptors Studio, where there are the model heads used when creating the memorial as well as interesting ranger presentations.

Beautiful lighting-of-the-monument ceremony

By Dani B. |

The site is amazing. If you can, stay for the lighting of the monument; it’s beautiful and breathtaking.

They used to gradually light the faces (I visited 20 years ago). This time, they just flipped the switch. I hope they go back to doing it slowly.

The staff is great. Nice and friendly (and so international!).

By Vicki A |

The monument is still something to see after my last visit 25 years ago. However, it had changed and grown a lot. I recommend touring the museum as it provides a massive amount of information concerning the building of the monument.

By Luann M |

We had been here before, but never for the lighting. The fall weather was gorgeous, the crowds were really low, and it was pleasant to just sit and see the lighting change for the statue. Parking is $10 (or $5 senior, or free for service). That needs to be paid with a credit card. The flags at the entrance were beautiful and I throughly enjoyed it.

What we expected and it was really cool to finally see this famous landmark. Really does amaze that they could do this and the location is pretty amazing.

By Sandi D |

Our first visit was in the evening for the lighting ceremony. You truly feel like an American on sacred land. The respect is palpable from the Ranger speaking to the movie shown. Then the National Anthem, the lighting and you stand in awe. All military are invited to go on to the stay to be celebrated and honored which is something our country needs to do more of. Our military serve and some pay the ultimate sacrifice with very little acknowledgment for their service, here at Mount Rushmore their service is honored and celebrated. This is a National Monument that every family should visit at least once.

America ;)

By Miller256 |

You truly have to see this to appreciate. Amazing place and view. The place was super clean and easy to navigate. Amazing how someone could make rock into art and honor our country for lifetimes to enjoy.

By jim s |

I find it interesting that the parks service seems to have planted trees almost everywhere to block the views unless you pay. I have been here many times over 40 years and they are concentrating on herding the public into their "pay here" area. Plan on bringing more money than you should need to look at a rock that we supposedly own, and as you pay them try to not feel milked. Won't go again. Funny how the web site for Mt. Rushmore doesn't have a comment section...maybe they don't care what we think as long as they grab the cash.

By flo220 |

A piece of American History. Can't help but take pictures of it and yourself in front of it. The museum describing its building is interesting and I loved looking at the state flags. Restrooms and food available. Must do if you are in South Dakota.

By Cherylvandrie |

We walked around the presidential loop with our family and had a great time taking selfies and learning more about the history of the monument. It is truly beautiful, and there are lots of shows and exhibits to help you learn more about how it was built and the history. The restaurant is good, and make sure you stay for the lighting ceremony at night. It was truly the highlight of our trip to SD!

By Jerome O |

Mount Rushmore is an amazing place to visit with your family. We took our trip here during spring break and could not be happier. It is so amazing how they were able to carve so much detail into the rock. The staff is very knowledgeable and the gift shop has the most unique items

By Regina R |

We had never been to Mt Rushmore before and it did not disappoint. Our son wasn’t feeling great so we didn’t do all the things we had planned, but the views are fantastic- the ice cream was delicious. Watching the video on how it came into existence was very informative.

Power spot

By Zoe M |

There is not much to do here, but you come here because it such a historical spot and a must see. The air is clean and crisp. The trails are great for exercise. And the atmosphere is calming.

Show business

By Roberto B |

One of the most iconic monuments in the United States representing Presidents George Washington , Thomas Jefferson , Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln , incredible the work done to sculpt them, from the balcony you can see large , but when you visit the dedicated museum with photos in the foreground of the men hanging from the ropes you realize the actual size of the faces .
Not to be missed if you are in South Dakota.

Impressive viewing of the presidents

By Jerri L |

Mount Rushmore has been updated so much since the last time we visited many years ago. There is a large parking ramp, a nice information area, large gift shop, and the visitor area has lots of educational displays about the process of carving the faces into the stone. There is a cafe and ice cream shop as well. A large amphitheater is built below the main viewing area. It never gets old visiting and is so impressive.

By Texas Traveler 59 |

Absolutely spectacular. Well worth the trip. A must do for every American, non-Americans as well. Museum is terrific. Take your time and learn about it conception and build. There are profile views from the road as well. Military veterans get a discount on parking.

Concession Parking = Mount Rushmore Memorial

By mlepoly |

Driving toward Mount Rushmore, there are several signs that direct each turn. When you get close, the only sign is ‘Concession Parking’ which we interpreted as a food and beverage stop. But No, this is the way to go in and park to see the memorial. Parking costs $10 or $5 for seniors or free for active military. While Mount Rushmore is administered by the NPS and there is a download available in the NPS App, Mt Rushmore is not a national park; it’s a memorial. You can’t drive around it (pay to park, then walk). There are no picnic areas in the memorial; it’s not a park.

By VNORVI |

One of the things in life you really need to see. It was a colossal effort, and is gorgeous. There is a nice hike to get up close, with a few stairs. The Thomas Jefferson ice cream at the snack bar was actually very good.

Amazing

By Pitt-Duq |

This is one of the most amazing National Parks. The visitor center tells the amazing story of the origin and completion of this monumental feat. It is free to enter, but there is a slight parking fee. It is a great place to increase your knowledge of American history. My granddaughters received a Junior Ranger there.

Beautiful Monument, but Limited Experience

By Rick_2785 |

Mount Rushmore is undeniably impressive to see in person—the size, detail, and history of the carving are remarkable. However, during my visit on October 1, 2025, there really wasn’t much to do beyond simply viewing the monument. The visitor center and other amenities seemed closed, which may have been due to the government shutdown happening at the time. While the sight itself is worth experiencing at least once, the lack of open exhibits or activities made the visit feel shorter and less engaging than expected.

A Must See during your Black Hills visit!

By Barb N |

Loved our visit here so much. What a neat place to see. We took a bus tour in the Black Hills and this was our first stop. We loved it so much, that we had to come back another evening and see the lighting ceremony as well. What a beautiful moving experience that was. I’m so glad we saw it both ways. We were so surprised at how many times, driving through the Black Hills, that you can see Mount Rushmore from a distance. But that’s not enough. It’s definitely worth going to see it up close.

Amazing Experience!

By CRoadTripper |

Lovely, well maintained memorial. We loved that the park has so much information on the site, how it was accomplished, and artifacts. The grounds are gorgeous and the site is amazing! So many ways to see and view the presidents. Handicap accessible and they "rent" wheelchairs (they are free). A couple small gift shops and one very large gift shop. Ice cream and restaurant on site, plus coffee. There is outdoor seating so you can view the presidents while eating. Food options include sub sandwiches, soup, chili, pizza, burgers, chicken, fries, hot dogs, salads, etc. We had hot dogs and chips, which were good. Split a soup. Better than expected! There are also a couple food trucks. Everything you need! We LOVED it! It's stunning!

A must do for the area!

By trippingtaffy |

Our visit to this popular tourist attraction was much better than anticipated. The only fee to enter was 10 us dollars for parking and then you were free to wander. The layout and info boards were excellent and gave you a whole host of views of the sculpture for photographs. Do the presidential hike, it's well worth it and not strenuous at all like some suggest.

Bucket list

By Kay F |

Mount Rushmore has always been on our bucket list and we enjoyed seeing it in person. An Avenue of Flags representing all U.S. states flank the walkway to the viewing arena. Below that area is a huge historical information center that takes about an hour to go through. It was interesting to see the footage, documents, and small scale models used to guide those who blasted and chiseled. It continues to take a lot of funding for the upkeep in order to share it with the world. There is a huge gift shop and cafeteria area. Plenty of parking on an October morning and a parking fee of $10 was paid at parking fee machine near the entrance.

By esprouls47 |

We visited back in the 70’s and the layout and presentation were much changed. But the set up for parking, the avenue to the Memorial was great. The separation of the visitor center and food services helped separate the large crowd. The 14 minute movie was good. All in all a great experience at an impressive memorial.

History Visit

By Angela B |

The staff at the park were knowledgeable and very helpful. They had answers to many questions and were excited to share!
The little museum in the Visitor Center below ground was nice to see. We walked the Presidential Trail and that was lovely. Be aware of the higher altitude even on the trail.
It was neat to visit and capture a brief bit of U.S. history.

A Monumental Experience

By Charlie R |

I had the opportunity to visit Mount Rushmore, and it absolutely exceeded my expectations! The monument itself is even more impressive in person than I imagined. The sheer size of the granite faces carved into the mountain is awe-inspiring. Standing at the viewing area, you get a clear, unobstructed view of the four presidents, which really gives you a sense of how monumental this work of art is.

The visitor center offers great exhibits and a lot of history about how the monument was created. I loved learning about Gutzon Borglum and his vision. The park rangers were friendly and full of interesting facts. The presidential trail was a perfect way to get up close to the monument, offering a few different viewpoints as you walk.

A wonderful destination and a moving show

By Gabriel H |

We took our extended family through several National Parks and ended our trip at Mount Rushmore. This is a beautiful and unique site, with the faces of four of our very best presidents carved in the face of the mountain. It is an amazing artistic accomplishment and a wonderful reminder that we used to have outstanding presidents. The visitors buildings offer information, gift selection, food, coffee, ice cream. There is a moderate length path that provides views of the presidential faces from multipole angles, as well as access to caves. There is an auditorium where a moving light ceremony takes place nightly, with recognition of our men and women in uniform. A most moving event!

By Robert P N |

We recommend the Mt Rushmore night time performance it is amazing. It’s a must do! I don’t want to spoil. So arrive early and try to get a seat in the auditorium. You will not be sorry. Parking will be tough and it will be crowded. We recommend going to the gift shop afterwards and letting the crowd drive off. Take a lot of pictures and enjoy.

By techgmu |

This place is amazing…photos do not do it justice! It rained a bit in the morning, but stopped by 9, and we spent several hours there in May. There were no crowds, and it was so neat and clean. The trails around the monument are nicely kept up. Make sure to see the movie inside!

Worth Seeing

By Jana Lea J |

I really liked seeing Mount Rushmore for the first time. It is amazing how it was created. The people in the visitor’s center were knowledgeable about any questions we had.

A Must See

By dlmsigh |

This was definitely the highlight of my trip. It is so unreal that you have to see it in person to believe. Gutzon Borglum was something else to have dreamed up this sculpture.

Simple awesome

By tnjr2019 |

Awesome. Thats the only way to describe Mount Rushmore. Great view through out the park and information in Vistors Center was great. Food reasonable priced

Of course its iconic Americana

By Hatzlacha |

Well, of course you get to see the big four presidents and take your own personal Americana photo. Though the people-watching regarding the visitors is almost an exhibit in itself. Depending on when you go, pack your patience, as it could get quite crowded.

Great…obvi! :)

By Dakkin |

So cool! We went early and it wasn’t busy and parking was abundant in the ramps (level 5 was empty). We got there probably right at 8am. It wasn’t hot yet either. Such a neat experience that everyone should do once in their life. The trail is a little much…lots of stairs. So, if stairs isn’t your thing, you may want to walk halfway and go back vs. the full loop.

Well worth your time to visit. The people of S.D. are so friendly.

By Thomas |

This place is amazing. The views of these four famous presidents is breathtaking. The park is easily accessible for just about anyone. A great place to spend a couple of hours in the Black Hills of S.D.

Bucket list place to visit

By Carrie W |

We visited Mount Rushmore both during the day and at night. Both were terrific. The walking path is a really neat way to see different vantage points. The museum was really good and there are lots of places to sit and just take in the view. The program at night was really good also. My only complaint would be that it was a little long between the ranger speaking and the movie that was shown before the lighting. It was very moving to see the veterans and family of fallen soldiers help take down the flag to conclude the program. A bucket list place for sure.

By TxAg1977 |

A well run place. Parking is easy. Gift shop, restaurant, food all were great. Spent about 2 1/2 hours there. A wonderful time and we are retired.

Bellissimo!

By Vally_e_Pier |

I couldn’t wait to see it and it was actually worth it! I liked it very, very scenic. Recommendation!

By doctimothy |

It is iconic, so it is something that I believe individuals should try to see once in their lifetime. I was able to take my sons (I had been there twice before), which made it more memorable for me this time. The hike is not too hard to see different views of the monument, but I would say be prepared for the stairs and definitely take a bottle of water. All in all, it is not one of those things that makes you go 5 stars, but it is an enjoyable venture. (Crazy Horse is perhaps even more compelling if you understand the history of the Black Hills).

Worth a visit

By RBonTheLake |

It's a nice walk past the flags with a great view of the monument. The presidential trail around was nice and worth doing. There wasn't much in the sculptor’s studio. We didn’t spend a lot of time here but worth it. It only costs $5 for seniors to park.

MUST SEE!!

By Penny_is_picky |

Seeing Mt Rushmore in person is quite spectacular and I am glad I made the journey to visit this National Monument. The whole area was well done, the viewing area, the visitors center, the movie, the gift shop and the Presidential Trail. I throughly enjoyed every moment there. Highly recommend to all.

Note that the Presidential Trail is a nice walk, however, it’s a lot of stairs going back up and might be difficult for some.

Great experience up close

By rgmtex |

What a great park. Really enjoyed the views of the 4 presidents face from the different areas of the park. The focus points of each president along the path was cool. This park is well maintained and updated. The only negative is you have to go u and down about 425 steps in the loop and it is rigorous for us old folk. But it was worth it. I'd come back if I ever make my way to the area.

Nice.

By Paolino!! |

Very impressive and very cute. The area is very clean, deserves especially with the sunset light. Very easy to reach

Go, but leave your dog at home for this one

By Dena K |

A beautiful, not-to-be-missed National Memorial! Just be aware that if you try to bring your dog, you cannot go past the entry. They have a small trail to an observation area (bench) you can walk to with your pet but the view is not nearly as nice as the one everyone else gets to see. If you have a pet you will also miss the restaurants, the gift shop and all of the other amenities. I would recommend leaving your dog at home or with someone else when you go to Mount Rushmore.

Great would return

By Resort511383 |

Very majestic and beautiful. You can look from any angle and see the exquisite workmanship.. a very strong feeling of love of Country and destiny in this place

By Jim K |

A piece of American history that as I child I always heard about. Now with time in retirement I made the trip and enjoyed seeing in in person!

The Four Presidents

By Beverly D |

This iconic view of mountain carved images of Washington Jefferson, T Roosevelt is not to be missed. It is busy place but we were able to access the film quickly. The film details the issues sculptor Bothglum faced as he. carved.the visages. This mountain is a most popular national monument

By tchelle1111 |

As a history buff, I enjoyed the beauty. I feel that parking should be free. Also dissatisfied with the lack of collection in gift shops. More like tourist stuff. You could tell it was off season and needed to restock

By JohnRegoPark |

The newly designed visitor center to Mount Rushmore sets to put the monument in the context in which it was created with profiles of the presidents, the artist, and the men and women who worked on it. This very informative introduction acts as background material to the actual monument itself. We visited in the rain, and it was still very handsome, although it gave the impression that the presidents were crying.

Stunning Memorial

By Ruben P |

The level of detail is incredible, and it's hard not to be impressed by the sheer scale and craftsmanship involved in carving this into the granite mountain. Also, the visitor center offers interesting exhibits about the history and construction of the memorial.

By Leigh W |

First time visiting.
It was amazing to get up close to Mount Rushmore on the pathway, it was a good hike, it is better to go to the left then go up from the right, A lot of stairs to climb, very accessible.

Husband says it was a spectacular site to see, a great presentation at the end.
We saw it during the day and at night, it is definitely worth the visit.

Check the weather beforehand

By Theresa D |

Unfortunately, by the time we did our long, long journey to the site, afternoon fog and rain had rolled in and we couldn't see the monument at all! It was really disappointing, but what can you do? We joked with the other disappointed folks squinting to make out anything and then went on our way. The site looked well-maintained and we checked out the exhibition and bookstore. Oh well. Some other time. Apparently afternoon fog can be a usual thing, so take it into account and check the weather. It's really not worth going if you can't see anything. Obviously.

By jrandnancy74 |

This was our first trip to Mt. Rushmore and we chose the nighttime Lighting Ceremony. So glad we did! We loved the program and all of the history that was presented. And our favorite part was standing to sing the National Anthem after the lighting!!!!🇺🇸

By Cynthia & Jorge |

Beautiful true national treasure. Well kept, good gift shop but a little overpriced.
Museums are great however small TV’s should be replace with 72 or 80 inch TV for better quality and people has more room between each other.

A must-see attraction

By Joe A |

This is one of America's must-see attractions. The sculpture is technically amazing and artistically superb. The giant size makes it even more striking. The presidential trail is great, but it has a lot of steps. The museum is good, as is the talk at the artist's studio. Perhaps best seen in the morning, but it is well worth being at the nighttime lighting ceremony. Fantastic!

By KarenM1_10 |

Wow! What can I say that hasn’t been said already. If you come, pick a day when the weather will be good. The last thing you need is to arrive with clouds and/or rain and not be able to view the monument and walk the path. When you leave the parking area and head towards the main entrance you can see Mt. Rushmore from there. The entry way known as “The Avenue of Flags” has flags from the states there. Fun to find your state flag and take a picture. You can either view the monument from the main viewing area or go down a couple more steps to another viewing area where you will have no one obstructing your view. If you go to the right, there are stairs that will take you to the Sculptors’ Studio and Presidential Trail. The trail has a lot of steps, and the walk can be strenuous. There are several signs posted as reminders. The walk is worth doing and there are plenty of benches to stop and catch your breath along the way. As you continue you will eventually come to a paved walkway that has a slight incline, but no steps, this will take you back to the viewing area. So, if you want a glimpse closer and don’t want to take the stairs, you can go to the left, which is less strenuous. If you plan on viewing it at night, I highly suggest you find a hotel that is near the monument instead of navigating your way back to your hotel in the dark. On your way out, stop and get a scoop or two of the Thomas Jefferson Ice Cream.

Must do!!!

By S R |

Must do!!! Go in the morning and go back in the evening for the movie and lighting ceremony. Totally different experience. Then stop by Keystone. Great small town.

By Keith M |

We finally were able to get to South Dakota to see Mount Rushmore. This is such a great monument to our country. So glad to see how packed it was.

Inspired by Mt. Rushmore

By Sunshine101067 |

This is my first time to do a review of Mt. Rushmore, and I have visited this site more than 10 times. I have been inspired with every visit and look forward to future visits. During our visit this summer, we toured the visitor center and watched the film. We did the complete walk...which includes sidewalks, boardwalks and steps. There are places along the walk to sit in the shade if you need to rest. The walk to the main viewing area is lined with the state flags. We attended the evening program which is "the best". A ranger spoke and then there was a film, followed by lighting of the memorial. On a cool night, you might need a jacket or a blanket. The gift shop located here is very nice too.

By MyersFamilyTravelers |

Our second time here and as always, a great stop. It had rained fairly hard right before the visit, but fortunately it cleared up shortly after we arrived. It is always neat to walk up and see the monument. We took the trail around the base and viewed the monument from different angles. Must see if in the area.

Impressive

By greeneyes630 |

We visited late afternoon on the Saturday between Christmas and the New Year. It really pays to travel during off season. I can only imagine how miserable this place gets with crowds in the summer. This place is impressive. And shockingly no entrance fee. There’s a $10 parking charge, which we happily paid.

Mount Rushmore Must See

By Chad B |

Unbelievable experience to see. Great walking trail along with great informational areas. Excellent self guided tour option. Must See

By daynasu |

You can see it from just about anywhere in the area, and it's really not that spectacular. I have a national parks pass and was super annoyed that they forced me into paying $10 to park my car there to walk up four flights of stairs (okay, I could have taken an elevator) to see the same thing I saw from OUTSIDE the park.

It's commercialized like crazy. Multiple gift shops, ice cream shops, and cafes.

There was no mention that the guy who sculpted it was in the KKK or that the land was stolen from the Lakota. It was -- look it up.

I was truly disappointed that in the area set up for first amendment demonstrations there were only people peddling religion.

The display of state flags was nice. The park was clean. It just felt wrong.

Another bucketlist item checked off and worth it

By Jennifer A |

This had been a bucklist item for both my husband and I. It did not disappoint. It was so amazing. I can't imagine having been the sculpturer on this one. If you are able and have time to walk the path, you'll get more views and a beautiful scenic walk. We arrived around 8 and only a handful of people, but they started coming in fast shortly after .

Pretty faces

By Jaidan G |

It’s one of those things that you have to see and experience once in your life. It may not be the most exciting place, but it’s definitely very cool. It has a nice trail to walk around and somewhere to become more knowledgeable about Rushmore.

By Chandra S |

Our family of seven (4 generations) from Texas visited Mount Rushmore while in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Our grandsons are homeschooling for the first time this year and this was the Best history lesson!! We watched the Park Film and completed the Junior Ranger Books. We also walked the Presidential Trail. It was very neat to see the Memorial from the different angles and to be right underneath it. We attended the Evening show and I would recommend that to anyone!! I absolutely love that they recognize the Veterans, Active Military Members and Gold Star Family Members and have them come on stage to be honored by the attendees of the program!! The Memorial itself is Very Impressive..it does not matter how many times you see it..still Impressive!! Every American needs to visit Mount Rushmore at least once in their lifetime!!

One of Eight Wonders

By Timothy K |

Let me preface this by saying that my family and I visited years ago, longer before I had joined trip advisor. So, the photos have been moved to another location but the memories remain.

Plan on making a weekend trip. It will take a while. It really is worth the visit; especially since not many people get to visit. Yes, I know millions of people visit but where I’m from, I don’t know of any body else who’ve been.

You learn about these places as a child in school but never get to really imagine how impressive it is until you see it in person.

If you are in SD your have to stop!

By worleybird98 |

Just being in the presence of this monument was so moving! We walked all around the grounds, went inside the visitor center, and watched the movie about the building of the monument, which was very informative. Took lots of pictures, and loved the Avenue of flags leading up to the viewing platform. Unless you do one of the hikes, this is not a stop that you will spend hours at, but it is absolutely worth the stop and so memorable.

touring tips

By DianeER |

This is an extremely popular attraction so arrive early. It gets very crowded, which will make taking pictures of just yourself & the monument difficult. Most of the times, you will have people in the photo.

For photographers- The morning sun is better for picture taking. In the pm the sun is in back of the monument, so visitors are in shadows.

See the museum first before it gets crowded.

There’s also a movie which is excellent so watch this before you go to see the monument as it will contribute to your understanding of what it took to build it.

Go on the President’s walking trail clockwise for less steps. It’s around 400 steps so be aware.

Go to the sculptor’s workshop- they were giving excellent presentations on the making of the monument when we were there.

Did you know they used to have a chair lift up to the monument for workers when they were building the monument? I wish they would have kept it as you are very far away from the monument & I would have liked to see it up closer as I was disappointed to be so far away from it.

Check to see if there are any native American Indian performances. We were lucky as we got to see a performance by a chief who was related to Crazy Horse who did an Indian dance for us. It was awesome.

Parking is $10 per car but seniors pay $5 per car. Take your parking pass with you when you leave your car as you need to pay for parking with your ticket in kiosks at the front of the walkway leading up to the monument.

We spent about 2.5 hours there.

If you like my review, I hope you’ll click the “helpful” button; those of us who write reviews live for those and it motivates us to do more.

Must see if in the area.

By rickbrennanrn |

It's not an all-day activity, but a definite must-see if you're in the area. The monument is an awesome site to see. There is a short walking path that allows for numerous different viewpoints. Free admission, but there is a $10 parking fee.

By Jennifer S |

The monument is so spectacular in person. We've seen lots of photos and of course the movies - but in person..totally checked this off our bucket list. We learned a lot of facts - who knew it was carved by strategically placed dynamite charges - 90%? Very interesting how they did this. Just a great site to visit. Very well maintained.

Awesome!!

By tribuckblessed |

This was a bucket list item that we are so happy to have experienced. The monument is even more incredible than we expected. Very much enjoyed the self-guided audio tour on the Presidential Trail and the ranger's presentation in the Sculptors Studio. What a wonderful experience!

By Brent W |

Impressive! It is absolutely stunning. My family and I really enjoyed this part of art and history. Great weather. Better than expected!

Bucket List Checklist

By Deborah D |

This is a wonderful monument. The grounds were impeccable and the staff did a great job keeping the place organized, clean and provided knowledge when engaged. The many photo ops were surprising and the little hikes were easy to moderate. There were quite a few stairs on one of the hikes but it is possible for most. You can easily see everything in 2-3 hrs. We were there on the shoulder season so it wasn’t busy but they do have ample parking and it well organized. No fee to go in but there is a 10.00 parking fee.

By Luca D |

One of the most famous monuments in the United States
Nice to see if you are in the area. Less to consider if you go there on purpose.
Very scenic and patriotic

By Villagesre |

Our second time here, was here in 2011. This time we elected to drive the 14 mile Needles road late in the afternoon, then get to Mt.Rushmore for the evening ceremony and lighting of the Sculpture. Excellent presentation by the National Park Service, video and honoring all veterans, past and present. Was well worth the time to see this program.

surprising

By francois g |

totally unreal, the night vision is even more special, the site is free, only parking which is per car, cheap, the explanations are very interesting

By Old Panther |

Fantastic! Everyone should visit this wonderful national monument! Glad and blessed and thankful we were fortunate enough to do so! Very impressive and an engineering marvel! Makes me proud (er) to be an American especially today when so many seem to really hate our great country!

You should go!

By leisuretraveler2 |

The sky cleared just as we got there! Perfect view. Worth every penny spent there. $10 parking fee, $5 for seniors. Light walking experience to terrace. Excellent movie to help you understand the experience. Take the presidential walk for close up viewing.
Go inside the 'cave' and look UP for a different view.

Exceptionally well done. Exceeded my every expectation.

By Bob S |

The entire experience here is exceptional! The roads getting in are great! The parking is super close. The entrance grounds are immaculate. If this is what our tax dollars go to, this is money well spent! You can get as little or as much of an experience as you would like. I did the quick self guided run around the place. The board walks are in great shape. There was a fire a few years ago and they did a great job with the restoration of the walking path and the grounds. I do wish the Hall of Records was accessible, but you can't have it all. The restaurant was really good. I had the New England pot roast and it was very good. They do say it gets busy during the summer season, so be aware.

The grounds are about 75% wheelchair accessible.

I did not look very hard, but I would have liked two things. The availability of rock souvenirs from the excavation, and a guided, or unguided trip closer to the faces.

By Gayle W |

Mt Rushmore is a view that everyone should see at least once in their lifetime. The magnitude and the details of the carvings - breathtaking! The Memorial/Park District does a wonderful job detailing the creation process. There are also great (paved) trails that take you up, under the carvings.

Very worthwhile. How did they do it?

By johnmM754OI |

Always stunning. Had been here years ago. Took friends this time. Love how they have expanded the parking area. Well done. Hiked the trail near the monument this time. Very worthwhile! Loved the row of flags too. Very crowded for shoulder season.

Presidential Mountain Galore !!!

By DannyWasserman |

Whatever you do, stop by this iconic mountain and witness this sculpture of four presidents have been displayed. Learn the stories of how men worked day and night for many years building this landmark national monument.

Yes you need to stop and go in! A drive by is not enough!

By Lisa E |

Did not expect to enjoy Rushmore as much as we did. Have to admit I was thinking a quick peek on a drive by would be enough. I made myself go in, rent the audio self-guided tour and we walked the trail. So glad I did, every angle of view was spectacular! The history is a story rich in politics and history.

77th Easter Sunrise Service April 20, 2025

By timetraveler54 |

I see from information in Keystone that the 77th annual Sunrise Service at the Mount Rushmore amphitheater is set for 7 am Easter morning, April 20. Another Bucket List item for travelers!
Last year it was warm enough to hike the Presidential Trail afterward, then have breakfast in the Carver's Cafe afterwards. We had coffee before the service in the kiosk at the Avenue of Flags. Will have coffee again this year.
A Praise Band will start playing at 6:45. You can park free until 7:15.
Looking forward to a war, beautiful morning.

So cool

This was a great experience to see. It is just so amazing to think an artist did this in that time period with so little modern machinery. I am very glad we made the stop and took it all in

By RICART75 |

For one of us it was a first-time bucket-list experience; for the other, it was rekindling memories of a childhood trip, more than a half-century earlier.
The large complex grown up around the monument is quite impressive. After one leaves the large parking structure, and passes through the entrance gates; one proceeds up the welcoming avenue of State flags. All of this framing the iconic mountain sculpture; growing larger as one approaches.
Being early May, the crowd of visitors was significant, but not overwhelming.
The visitor center is a wonderful source of orientation and perspective on the history and construction of this American treasure; using film, exhibits and artifacts to bring forth the story. .
The huge windows are great for viewing if there's inclimate weather; or one can exit to the outdoor platforms for an even more immediate experience.
We spent several hours here, left for some pizza in Keystone; and then returned to wait as evening approached, so we could watch the faces emerge in the night lighting.
One of the highlights of this visit, for us, was meeting and talking with a Park Ranger, who had previously been a law-enforcement officer back in our home State of Indiana. His stories and observations added an interesting perspective to our experience.
Whether one is a patriot or a cynic; seeing this monument is amazing. It is a tribute to what this country is and/or strives to be.
One other observation: For those folks "of-an-age", whose last visit may have been significant segments of a century ago; visiting here is no longer just "pulling off the road" when coming upon this massive edifice. The surrounding structures are well-conceived, informative and easily accessible; but several people we talked with say they also, in some ways, diminish the initial impact of the actual sculpture just a bit. It may have been a closer proximity, or just the years of memory; but in any case, everyone agreed it is still quite impressive and moving.

Been wanting to see the Memorial since I was a child. It lived up to everything I hoped it to be and more.

Memorial is free but parking is $5.00-$10.00. If you are eligible, park in the Handicapped lot. It's so much closer to the main entrance than the other lots. The walk to the Memorial is across the Avenue of Flags and it's very nice. Stop and take a look at them. The Memorial is breathtaking. So large and powering. They have benches so one can sit and take pictures or just gaze. The main visitor center shows a 15-20 minute film which I highly recommend on the history, etc. Very informative. A very large gift shop will surely have something you desire :) You can pay for your parking ticket there instead of at the parking kiosks to save you some time. There is a food court, food truck and ice cream shop. It was a bit dirty but that didn't stop the many folks buying their ice cream cones or cup. There was a night show that illuminates the Memorial and it's worth staying for, in my opinion. You can also come back...just save your parking ticket. I think it's good for a week.

There is a nice trail through trees but it has many stairs, so not for everyone.

We were there about 2 hours or so. It was a lovely sunny day and we enjoyed it very much. 5 STARS.

It was ok. The monument was impressive and gets the hype it should deserve, it was gorgeous. It was crowded there and they could’ve had more to do for young kids/teens to be interested in. The Mount Rushmore trail was nice, and it was overall a cool experience. It was boring after a while, and there could’ve been more to do for people who aren’t as interested in the history, like young kids/teens/and even some adults. It was a nice visit, but crowded and quite boring.

Happy wife.

Great stay. Will come again when in the area. When wew come to the 4 Corners again, we will go a bit out of our way to stay at the Baymont.

Loved it!

This place needs to be visited by all. So patriotic, a lesson in democracy. The video is great and talks about the history of how the stone was carved by brave souls. Nice gift shop. The .06 presidential mile hike offers nice views.

Bucket list ✅ (A must see!)

By Dreams of Traveling The World |

This is a must see bucket list item. What an amazing site, so much history to be learned. There are walking trails with beautiful views of the mountain from different angles, however the trail is not wheelchair accessible. The memorial itself is wheelchair accessible. Easy parking with a fee but entrance to the memorial is free of charge.

Must see!!

By Sergio1954 |

Everyone should go and see this monument. It is impressive thinking that they did this a long time ago and completed it in 14 years. The entry fee is $5 per car which is only for the parking. The monument itself is free. You can get fairly close to the monument itself by taking a short walk up the left had side of the viewing area. It puts you almost directly underneath. Under the viewing area there is a theater with a short film on how the monument was built and also a large exhibit area with pictures and tools that were used during construction. I would highly recommend both. There is an eating area with take out food and ice cream and a gift shop which has everything possible with Mt. Rushmore on it. The drive is only about 10 minutes max outside of Keystone. I would recommend to see this at least once in your lifetime.

I'll be the first to admit that I am a bit jaded, but I can't understand the pet rules. There must be a way to address the vacationers that travel with their pets. I know the pets don't care about the site, but as a couple, I want to see this stuff with my wife, not alone while the other puppy sits. A few things rubbed me wrong here. The exercise trail is a major disappointment as it is a very short trek, and then faced with a "No Pets Allowed" sign in all directions. Then a young girl approached us to offer a token to the pet for visiting. I kindly told her that since the dog was not allowed, why would I accept the token; thanks, but no thanks. I went there, took 2-3 pictures, and got the hell out.

Mt Rushmore

By Fred S |

Mt Rushmore was great! Was in red lodge montana will post some pictures from there also!! Went to reptile gardens in the area also, and the needles hwy was great.

Much improved facilities since my last visit in 1973.

By colormeelmo |

The last time I visited here was 1973 and they have really done a lot of work making parking structures, a theater, visitors center and a large store. It was easy to get in and out of and was impressive to see as always. We drove three scenic loops in the area afterwards that really added to our visit there. We stayed nearby in Custer, which is a nice-looking little town, but our choices for accommodations and eating option are not something we would care to recommend.

American Must

By Kate S |

The views of Mt. Rushmore are amazing and they really let you get up close to it. We didn't do the hikes up to the top or the tours; we basically came, saw, shopped at the gift store and left. Probably took an hour tops. The history of the monument is interesting, but you can also read up on that elsewhere or watch documentaries on it on Amazon (like we did).

Bucket list item checked off!

By Tom |

Opinions about this attraction are going to far ranging but since this was a bucket list item since my childhood I'm on the more positive end. I went later in the afternoon in early October so no crowds to deal with. Government shutdown affected the Visitor Center and amphitheater shows but the restrooms and gift shop were open. Spent about an hour there with perfect weather so sun angles were ideal to get a boatload of pics to sift through. Visitors were friendly enough to help each other with the family or solo picture taking. Parking was very plentiful. Visitor platform admission fee is nominal at $10 for most and $5 for seniors. There is a strenuous walking trail for those fit enough to try it. Would be interesting to take a helicopter tour and motor tour on another day if they aren't too pricey. I recommend a stop here and Crazy Horse (didn't have time to check it out) when in the area,

Full of history

beautiful place and amazing experience with family. we had our mothers with us, aged 80 and 81. the place is full of history. Advise for traveller, be early to start going up and take drinking water with you since it's too hot now. keep hydrated. can't believe we got there in time. No more fees after 5 pm.

Great place to make some unforgettable memories and take some breathtaking photos.

By M.Frazier |

On a group trip to the national parks we stopped at Mount Rushmore for a few hours. It was fall and the scenery was gorgeous. Highly recommend a visit. There are props available for some beautiful photo memories ❤️

cool place

By AngelaMB12 |

This park was well thought out to deal with the high volume of visitors. Parking was very easy with # of spaces available on signs for each parking area (veterans take note: parking is free for vets. We didn't know this until after we paid to park). The whole park was clean and restrooms were plentiful. The visitor center had an informative display and the movie was also full of info. If its raining the day you visit, go to the visitor center because it faces the monument and has huge windows to view. The President Trail offered close up views and also has a Native American area where a gentleman gave a talk and sang (that was a nice surprise for us). Overall, the hype of the monument is legit...its a cool place!

Leave Time for Learning

By Leslie J |

This was our last stop of a very busy day and seemed a little overwhelming right from the get go. The organization was good as you were directed to an open level in the large garage. We followed the walk around past Borglum's studio and on to the sculpture itself. Be sure to go into the cave like area to get a cool view of George Washington. There is a lot of up and down stairs as one walks around. The most lame part was the Native American area. It really looked like an after thought. The visitor center had an amazing amount of Information and we did not do it justice. I also regret not trying Thomas Jefferson's vanilla ice cream.

By MomofAPN |

This is certainly a must see destination, though it was much more crowded with tourists than expected. It’s worth taking the presidential trail for a closer look!

Iconic American Beauty

By Jill E |

We visited Mt. Rushmore during the (damn) government shut down in late Sept/early Oct 2025. Because of the shut down, the Visitor’s Center was closed; the informational movie about the sculptor and the history of the carving was unavailable; there were no park rangers working, etc, etc. This was tremendously disappointing, as I know we missed so much of the total experience.
Disappointment aside, we were grateful to still be able to see the carving itself, flanked by the avenue of state flags. The carving is beautiful, with photo opportunities from various angles.
As you are driving away, be sure to notice the sign making you aware that the “Profile View” is coming up. It is worth pulling off to see George Washington’s profile on the mountain, and to read the informative sign beside the parking area.
Mt. Rushmore is such an iconic slice of Americana. Don’t miss it if you are anywhere nearby. There is no cost other than parking, which is $10 per car, but that $10 gets you in and out of the grounds as many times as you want to go for one full calendar year from date of purchase.

Impressive, but Custer State Park was much better!

By Moc123 |

Sure, it's cool. And yes, I'm glad I went. But it's not someplace I'd return to, given how many natural wonders there are in this area. I'm just glad I went before another president gets his face added to the collection!

By Fist Bump Trader |

Mount Rushmore National Memorial in Keystone, South Dakota, is like a colossal salute to American greatness! Seeing those monumental faces of Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln carved into the mountain is mind-blowing. The patriotic vibes here are off the charts, and the nightly lighting ceremony is a touching tribute to our nation's history. The grandeur of Mount Rushmore and the surrounding Black Hills region make it a must-see destination for any American road trip.

Disappointed in our rv stay at the KOA. We booked a premium site but we were stuck on the side of a hill overlooking our neighbors sewer pipe. It's very busy. It has some good sites. The bathrooms were clean but I didn't trust the pool.
I wouldn't stay again. There are other rv sites nearby.

Awesome place to go

By Andrew B |

This is an amazing place to go. Not to enjoyable for kids, but for adults, the informative video, bookstore, museum, brochures and the actual walk around path close to the base are a 100% must do.

Go in the morning and evening

By saritaj14 |

We went right at 8 am and then returned in the evening about 8 pm for the lighting ceremony. I highly recommend you go both during the day and in the evening at some point. Your $10 parking fee lasts for the year so another reason to return for the evening! Try to park on level 5 or 6 for the most convenient way to enter. If you can visit early in June you will avoid the heat and the crowds.

By Petra Nieminen |

What an experience to enter the Mount Rushmore National Memorial area. Walking around the Presidential Trail was awesome. Checked off an item on my "bucketlist".

By Jim B |

I'll start off with this is a must see site if you are in the area. The beauty of the sculptures is undeniable. The talent it took to achieve it is remarkable. I just come away with a feeling of having desecrated an area that was significant to the Native inhabitants that the US Government took it away from.

I realize I live in a different era than those who dreamt this monument up and I may have thought differently if I lived during that era. Since it is already done, it is worth visiting and reflecting on the presidents that it honors.

By Barry G |

Went with my daughter, her husband, and their 4 children ages 5 to 9. Area for parking and viewing has changed since the last time I was at this attraction. Suggest going early as we did to avoid the crowds that keep growing as the day goes on. That makes a difference. Children also viewed Native Americans dancing and explaining their culture to the crowd. They found that very interesting. That was happening when we arrived but don't know how many times or if others performed during the day.

Rushmore Memorial

By Duncan Webb |

Definitely one of those sites that everyone has to see, but I am sure most have heard that it can be rather un-exciting. It's all what you make it! If you're in the area, definitely check out Crazy Horse Memorial right up the road from here

Lovely visit

By Mudeford 123 |

Plenty of parking and you can return any time within 48 hours. Went on a ranger tour which was very informative. Followed the well marked trail afterwards. Went back in the evening for the lighting ceremony. Talk and film followed by illumination of the carving. Restaurant has as a good menu. Also make sure you have an ice cream which is delicious.

Breathtaking!

By navypoppop |

We came on our trip with Mt. Rushmore as our prime destination. We were not disappointed and so glad we came first thing in the morning. Cool temps and very little crowds. It is amazing to see and the pride in being an American where we can do these kind of memorials to honor who we are.

Best views of Mt Rushmore!

By Bobby |

Best views of Mt Rushmore are from. iron Mountain Rd, nearby…
The tunnels frame the monument perfectly. It’s a tricky drive not particularly hospitable to motorhomes.

Makes me proud to be an American

By Raymond T |

Finally, I made here to see this great work of art. To visually see the 4 Presidents in person is something I will never forget. This is what America stands for in George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. Located in the Black Hills, the scenery just complements the grand sculpture presented. I also stayed for a presentation of the history in the sculpting of one of America's best monuments which made me appreciate the great task undertaken to create this. A great way to start the summer holidays encourages me to see more of America now

Mt Rushmore.. A got to see destination

By Wanderer26398837525 |

Make the time to see one of our nations greatest parks. To see it on TV or in pictures does not give it justus.. When you are up close it literally takes your breath away. It is truely amazing that our forefathers actually carved this monument with there hands. It is a GOT TO SEE destination.

By Teresa R |

This is a great place. I loved all the state flags framing the presidents. The video was good and not too long for littles. My only complaint was the parking garage. Utter chaos with people getting their permits, no direction, card only. Nice gift shop.

True American Experience

By Carrie D. |

This was one of the highlights of the trip! The monument itself is obviously very cool—it’s incredible that it is as big as it is. The Avenue of Flags is also a nice added touch. The amenities are first rate—the exhibit hall, the theater and its video in the visitor center, the amphitheater and the gift shops are all fantastic. But the evening lighting ceremony was truly spectacular and something I won’t forget. Everything from the ranger’s inspiring remarks to the movie, to the singing of the national anthem to the recognition of our military members, veterans and gold star families—it gave me goosebumps and brought tears to my eyes. It was perfectly presented and its something I wish every American could experience.

By Ken F |

A must see of a National Park. Spend the time to walk through the visitors center and see how this was created and the extraordinary engineering involved. Breathtaking!

Long drive, but worth it!

By Jennifer |

Outstanding! Several trails to take to get alternate views. We had beautiful weather, which enabled us to take great photos!

By Lisa S |

I bought a ring at the gift shop & didn't realize I was accidentally sent home with the wrong ring. I contacted them and Nancy patiently helped me try to find the correct ring through texting. I didn't find it but I did find one I really liked in its place. Nancy was very friendly & so wonderful to work with. We found a bunch of treasures in that shop & would definitely go back again. The monument was just Amazing to see in person. I highly recommend going to see it.

Not as big as I thought

By Mystic_in_a_Kilt |

Last time I was at Mt Rushmore, I was 7-years-old and I remember it being huge! Upon returning... yeah... it's not so big. That being said, visiting was a good reminder of the foundations of the country and who we should be, even if we aren't right now.
My grandson was able to get his Jr Ranger badge from a great park ranger who cared a lot about his job and the impression that he leaves with these little ones.
Very worth a visit.

Very enjoyable and educational

By James M |

This is a continuation of our trip out west. We stopped at Mt Rushmore. It is an awe-inspiring monument. The parking lot includes handicapped spaces, bus parking, and regular open parking. Electric vehicles can charge at one of the six charging stations on the lower level. I saw a tire air station leaving the parking lot with easy access. The entrance is beautiful with all the state flags lined up in a row leading to the visitor center and the monument in the background. Entry to the visitor center is by stairs or elevator. This is to facilitate entry to the upper and lower observation decks. The visitor center staff are friendly and eager to explain the many displays inside. The displays show the monument creation, the tools, and the background of the people behind the construction. There is a nice gift shop and a small cafeteria serving burgers, hot dogs, soups, etc. Their ice cream is tasty too. The one ice cream shop on the upper level we wanted to visit was not open. Jefferson’s original recipe for vanilla ice cream is their specialty. They ran out by 10:30 am due to a delayed delivery. The monument dominates the area. Mt Rushmore is lit up with white lights at night. This gives Mt Rushmore a ghostly appearance. It would be nice if they used red, white, and blue. To close out the evening, there is a great patriotic show. They do the Pledge of Allegiance, sing the Star-Spangled Banner, and have veterans come down to the flagpole. The veterans are the flag detail. The ranger lowers the flag; then the veterans hold the flag and fold it for presentation to the park ranger. It is a wonderful patriotic tribute. Mt Rushmore is a must-see if you are in the area.

By Lucy |

The truth is that we went there because we also went to the Crazy Horse monument en the combination of these two huge sculpters so near each other, made us curious.
Once we had informed ourself about the history of the Black Hills (the value that it has for native Americans and the recognitions by American law that they were the owners of this land when the 4 president-faces were
carved), and you read that 'mount Rushmore' is supposed to represent a 'Shrine of Democracy' you're immediately aware how selffocused this monument is. It was also a bit disappointing... although it's big, it turned out to be much les outstanding and much more dark/grey than we expected.

Patriotic Moving Experience

By CaringCustomer69 |

First impression: Smaller than I thought it would be. Doesn't take away from the IMPRESSION it makes. I sat in the bench seating and sketched the monument. I could have spent far more time there but needed to hike. Go down the trail FROM THE LEFT to minimize your stair climbing. Some wonderful vistas along the way. Outside the bookstore and theater is a little stand with a rubber stamp. One of the monument and one with the date. PERFECT FREE SOUVENIER. Our driver stopped at a profile of Washington viewing area just around the corner. Only negative (but I get it): Freedom of speach was alive and well. Lady with her young girls performing and hawking. It was NOT the audio background I wanted/appreciated/desired for such an intense patriotic experience. :( Shame on them for not being reverent.

By SPT |

Wow, amazing!
Go for the evening lighting ceremony.
They light up the whole mountain and lower The Flag and sing the anthem… heartwarming.

A must visit

By liz m |

This place is amazing. Great view of the 4 presidents, nice gift shop, clean restrooms, ice cream shop, cafe too. A kids meal at 8.5 $ is the size of a normal meal in the UK. Had chicken tenders and fries boohoo good.

Worth the Visit

By Alexander S Ognibene |

Memorial was great to see and the Presidential trail is worth the short just under 1 mile hike if your up for it. Forewarn that your NPS Annual Pass won’t work at the gate and you’ll have to pay to park in the garages.

Short but good visit

By Stacy H |

I’ve said in other reviews that people said I was crazy visiting South Dakota in February. And this was my first trip to Mt Rushmore. I will definitely say there are advantages and disadvantages to going this time of year but I will still give it 5 stars (circles?) because it was my choice to visit in the winter.

Disadvantages: Cold!!!
The trails around the park were closed.

Advantages: I think I saw a total of 15 visitors the whole time I was there. No crowds. No lines. Great parking. Only 5 other people in the visitor’s center. No waiting 15 minutes for the family of 12 to take all of their pictures on 6 different phones. I could stand there and look at the monument as long as my frozen feet would allow.

This is one place I have been I would definitely recommend coming to in the winter especially if you get annoyed with other tourists

Fantastic monument

A bucket list item "checked" - be sure to visit during the day and in the evening

By Brown_Samantha |

What a national landmark!! Finally got to check off this bucket list, and it did not disappoint. We came here around 10 am, took the advice of a professional photographer -- least amount of shadow casted. Too early, Teddy Roosevelt is in too much shade. Too late, way too much shadow. Then returned another day, for the wonderful evening program that lasted 45 minutes and ended with the dramatic lighting of the monument ceremony.

Parking is super easy, underground and keep the car in the shade. Easy walk up to the main area, Avenue of Flags, towards the terrace amphitheater. Being in September, the crowd size was not so bad. We took the Presidential Loop Trail, that is a "must do" unless you have physical limitations. Sure, there were a lot of ups and downs with many steps and stairs. The loop trail does take you to several different view points, also walk right by the sculpture studio. We didn't realize the monuments were supposed to have full jacket/suits! Only the war interfered and funding got diverted to the war effort.

The $10 parking is good for a full year. This is great as we visited it on different days. We also got a scoop of the Jefferson original recipe vanilla ice cream. Very generous scoop, like a huge full cup. The vanilla had great flavor, not just a tourist gimmick.

Our experience was a 10. The gift shop was huge, full of wonderful items to take home. Very friendly staff everywhere. Well put together.

Loved it!

By HM1 |

This was an amazing experience. For only $10 ($5 for seniors) we were able to view the beautiful scenery of the mountain and learned why each president was selected. The great thing is the entrance fee is good for a whole year in case you want to visit again. Definitely worth visiting.

By Trista A |

To see Mount Rushmore in person is a must! The visitors center is very well done, the approach is awe inspiring and gives all the feels. We visited early in the day and then went back that night for the lighting ceremony. The evening ceremony is a must - it is powerful and beautiful. The rangers honor military vets and active duty which just adds to the feelings. I left inspired and awed and so proud. My biggest take away - no matter your party leanings this is America and we all take away a feeling of pride in our country.

Wonderful

By Janene Simpson |

Was a beautiful memorial park and the boarded walkways made it very easy to experience the park.
On the day we visited, the sculpturers studio was closed, which was disappointing but we could peek in the windows.

Famous Memorial In South Dakota

By Spiderdog |

I have had an image in my mind of Mount Rushmore for years and fortunately I was not disappointed when we visited it recently.
Whichever way you look at the Presidential heads is amazing. From a distance it is an iconic landmark but close up you can really appreciate the scale of the site and the details of the sculpture.
The site itself is well organized with plenty of parking and guides to direct you to a parking slot. There is a fee for parking which you can pay by machine before you return to your car at the end of your visit. There are special rates for seniors ( over 62) and veterans although this is not checked anywhere.
I suspect there is a higher than expected number of old people or veterans visiting!
When you enter the site you find yourself on the avenue of flags which reminded me of a theme park but it's a great photo opportunity and your first impression of the sheer scale of the memorial.
The Presidential trail runs around the monument and provides different view points. We got our best photo's from the trail as you pass through a forest area and the greenery topped with the sculptures and a cloudless blue sky was amazing.
There are steps and boardwalks on the trail and we saw some people struggling with the walk. It's not ideal for push chairs or wheel chairs either.
We found that we covered the site including the walk and museum visit within 2 hours.
There is a lighting up ceremony each evening which would be spectacular but it didn't fit in with our tight schedule and we were happy with our day time photos.
It's a must visit sight in South Dakota!

Worth seeing!

By Janie M |

It was quite moving to actually see them. The visitor center movie explained a lot of the story behind the creation of the memorial. The facility there looks as fresh and clean as if it was finished yesterday. They are doing a super job of maintaining this park! The experience was well worth the entrance fee.

Not worth the stop

By gooilersLeduc |

We stopped here on the end of our 24 day bus trip to the deep south with Nagel Bus Tours. This is not one of my favorite stops. The weather is always cold and windy. All there is to see are the heads of the presidents and no other history or anything.I got just the same watching this on tv .I feel it is a waste of time to stop here.It is a 15 minute stop if you want to see it.

Worth a visit

By USASUN |

We just wanted to look at the presidents from the street. Since we still had time left, we made a visit anyway. This was really worth it. The exhibitions are very informative, as are Ranger events. We liked the president's way best on wooden walkways and stairs. You are very close and always have a different view. On the terrace of the restaurant we had some more food and enjoyed the view.
Likewise, there is of course a large shop.

impressive monument

By UliS |

When it comes to the "iconic sights" I am always a bit skeptical as many do not live up to my expectations. I remember, for example, how unimpressed I was by the Brandenburg Gate. Accordingly, I expected little from Mount Rushmore. It was on our route from Denver to Yellowstone Park and while you're there, you have to take a look. And here we have an iconic sight that actually impressed me. It almost made me awe-inspiring to stand in front of the hewn mountain and look at the work. It's amazing what was done then. If you want, you can learn a lot about it. There are several buildings on the premises with exhibitions, information and of course souvenirs. There is also the famous Jefferson Vanilla ice cream that you have to try once you get there.

By Texas Traveler 59 |

An amazing monument that brings all Americans together basking in the shadow of freedom. Pictures do not do this place justice, go see it.

Monumental

By Robert D |

I visited Mount Rushmore National Memorial on a May morning. Since it was not yet the peak tourist season, we were the only bus there. You pass through the Avenue of Flags to get to the Grand View Terrace. You can see the view from the Grand View Terrace. The monument features Presidents Washington, Jefferson, T. Roosevelt, and Lincoln. I walked along the Presidential Trail to see differing perspectives and went to the Sculptor's Studio to see a scale model. I ended my visit at the Visitor's Center. This is a must see sight and the main reason people visit the Rapid City area.

Proud to be an American

By Jenn P |

If you didn’t feel too patriotic before standing before this, you will after. What an absolute accomplishment and honor to our country. As others stated, parking can be an absolute nightmare and could only imagine the crowds in the summer. Someone in a wheelchair could happily enjoy this, but someone with general walking difficulties will not be able to get as close. Be sure to take a look around the visitor/education center to learn more. Don’t forget to grab a Thomas Jefferson ice cream before leaving!

By TrailTrekker15 |

We visited Mt. Rushmore National Memorial on our way through the Black Hills. The memorial itself is a magnificent work of art and engineering. The museum detailing the construction of the busts was excellent. On the other hand, the crowds near July 4th were large making it less enjoyable. Also, the park charged a $10 parking fee that the national park pass does not cover. The kiosks to pay the fee were hard to operate taking several tries to make it work. On another day it would likely be better, but this particular day was an okay experience.

Aw Inspiring both Day and Night

By 3littlebirdz |

It's a must see. So interesting to learn the history and see the pictures of the construction. We enjoyed the strenuous stair climb to get a closer looks. We even went back at night to see it illuminated. It was worth it!

July in South Dakota

By Jessica K |

This is obviously a must do when in South Dakota. There is a fee to park, but the park itself is free. During the summer it will be very busy. There is a theater with an informative film about the history of the park, as well as a museum. If you go on the presidential trail - well worth it! - best go clockwise (less up stairs). Pictures really don’t do it justice.

Definitely a place to see. But not sure the kids really enjoyed seeing it close up as they saw it from the road seven or eight times. We spent less than an hour and a half there. Went inside to cool off and watch the 14 minute movie. Took some photos, and that was enough for them. if you’re with kids don’t plan on a long time

A US National Memorial with a Visitors Centre and ample parking Mount Rushmore is iconic. It was interesting for us as UK nationals to learn about the order in which each of the states joined America. The gift shop stocks plenty of patriotic merchandise and the cafe sells enormous ice creams. The carvings of the presidents are pretty impressive and the story regards how they came about is interesting.

By Marla O |

It is amazing to learn how Rushmore was built. Watch the movie. But when you go there, it’s a bit of a letdown. Not attempting to not be patriotic, but you see it, no that’s it!

Overwhelming!

By noel1127 |

We were in the area to see all the local attractions. While this was on our list we did not anticipate it would be one of the top attractions for us! Majestic and stately to see. There was a short film showing how the carving was created along with a small museum giving more details. Make sure to go!

Mount Rushmore National Memorial

By Andrey N |

It was on our bucket list for years and finally did it. Our visit didn’t disappoint. Just a great site to see and emotional to see up close. We arrived in the morning and easily found paid parking in the garage. The facilities are nice and very well maintained. Must do in your lifetime.

By Jill C |

Everyone needs to visit here at least once in their lifetime. Though the statues weren't as large as I had expected, they were still quite impressive. The parallel row of state flags leading out onto the viewing terrace made it very grand. The visitor center is very informative, and the gift shop is expansive. We hiked the 400+ stair trail down below the rock wall, which is well worth doing, as it offers unique, changing perspectives of each face. We also ate in the cafeteria, which offers decent food at good prices, with large servings.

By GRWLR51 |

Incredible up close! Pictures don’t do it justice. The history and story are also very well displayed and discussed. We had a blast and the kids loved it.

Well worth a visit.

By Travel Our Style Simon and Catrina |

Well worth a visit, as an overseas visitor to this iconic landmark is still impressive. There is plenty of Car Parking which is chargeable even with a ‘America The Beautiful’ Pass. It was great to see them up close before heading off on the Iron Mountain Road for further distance views.

excellent

By marcy h |

Magnificent! Just amazing! Everyone needs to visit! My first time seeing this in person and we were amazed at the work it took to create such an amazing piece of history.
Definitely a must see.

By Tammie P |

Amazing view. We went in and watched movie. Didn’t stay for ceremony. Took lunch with us, then went to Custer state park. That is a must.

By ManningAvenger |

Mount Rushmore was a site we have wanted to visit for years. We visited on two different days. The first day was foggy. While it wasn't the best day for pictures, it added a mystique to the memorial with the sculpture being covered in clouds at times. The second day was clear and of course the memorial was beautiful. The gift shop was chock full of nice gifts. A definitely stick around for the evening show for the lighting of the memorial. Such a beautiful sight. Everyone in America should visit at least once.

Bringing History Alive Through Sculptures and Ice Cream!

By inspiruption |

It's one thing to read about Mt. Rushmore, but it's another thing to see it in person. It's such an incredible sight with a lot of beautiful walking paths, offering different views as you go. Also, make sure to stop by the ice cream shop by the visitor's center and get Thomas Jefferson's original recipe vanilla ice cream - it's delicious!

Mount Rushmore: A Dream Come True and an Unforgettable Experience

By iblameromeo |

Visiting Mount Rushmore was truly a dream come true! I'd only ever seen it in photos and in Naruto, but being here in person was an unforgettable experience. Standing before the iconic rock faces of these great American figures was as breathtaking as I’d imagined. There’s also a trail inside the park that you can explore after taking in the monument. Admission is $25 per vehicle, though our fee was waived, thanks to our friend in the military. I highly recommend visiting Mount Rushmore—it’s a remarkable site that everyone should experience at least once!

By rusty h |

I must do in your lifetime. If you’re going to do the trail start by going left. If you go to the right it’s almost all uphill. The path is all hard surfaces. Easy to walk. Yes there are a lot of step on the trail. A lot of photos opportunities.

Must-do on our US road trip

By Heather H |

This was one of the highlights of our US road trip. As Brits my 82-year-old father and I really enjoyed learning about both how the monument was sculpted and US history (we don't learn about this in UK schools although of course we know the Americans celebrate independence from us!)

The NPS website advises those with mobility issues to go to car park 4, which turned out to be very close to the elevator. There was also a lovely cafe with views of the monument with an ice-cream shop next door. We recommend half a day's visit.

Must visit!! Don't skip on the videos and museum!

By amberdaniels |

AMAZING EXPERIENCE! It was my first time to South Dakota, so we had to visit Mount Rushmore. Although this is a free national park, there is a $10 parking fee (might be more for RV but we have a car). Must visit the museum- it explains the entire building process and has 2 videos. There are a few trails around the park, but unfortunately it was very windy and it was closed.

By Elaine W |

We travelled to Mount Rushmore by car from hotel took about half an hour, we spent time just staring at the amazing sight and taking lots of photos. Once in a lifetime trip

What a history and sculpture.

By Phyllis P |

Truly amazing. Recommend staying for the 9:00 pm lighting of the sculpture. It is not a light show but is memorable to see them light it up.

Loved Mount Rushmore - and then you blew it!

By Jeannine L |

We absolutely were amazed and astonished by Mount Rushmore. The history and details of the architecture were amazing. But then we came to the lighting ceremony. The first sentence set a tone for the political agenda that was to be for the next 20 minutes. Although no specific names were mentioned, it was clear of the persuasion technics. I came to Mount Rushmore to enjoy a vacation, learn about the skill in the creation, wonder at the beauty and escape politics. I do not want any NFL football player, Hollywood celebrity or NPS to tell me how to vote. Although no direct reference was made, it was abundantly clear of their persuasion technics. There was NO doubt. My rating jumped from a 5 to a 1. Please send your efforts to the services that you provide not a political advertisement. That is why we come to see this beautiful wonder.

Put this on your list!

By Nanci H |

Outstanding and worth the visit. Very well done. Informative, good parking and access. Lots of visitors from all around

By Q5907ZFlorih |

Must go see Mt. Rushmore when in the area. Small national monument, but still impressive. Parking is $10 ($5 for seniors). If physically able walk the trail for better views of monument. Half the trail is flat and the other half has many stairs.

Early morning visit to Mt Rushmore

By Jill W |

We arrived at 5:45 am. I highly recommend going at this time of day. The trail around the base of the monument is fun! Lots of stairs but super pretty and gives another angle on the monument. We were nearly the only ones there and later on in the day it can get very crowded. The night lighting is excellent too but this was pretty amazing.

Unbelievable to see in person

By LV |

You think you won't be impressed because you have seen so many pics. But to see it in person is very impressive. And I saw my first chipmunks. There were 4 running around on the patio. You have to see it if you are ever out in South Dakota

By HeberLO |

Unique place and a dream come true to visit this place, as I believe there is nothing similar in the world, especially this historical part that involves the 4 presidents, as it is very interesting to have personal contact with something you studied at school (an experience identical to that I had when I saw the Berlin Wall). Excellent infrastructure, the walk you take to get closer to the sculptures is along an easy-to-walk, tree-lined path. Also noteworthy is the Portal das Bandeiras with the story told there: all the flags of the states and when they joined the Union. Finally, the souvenir shops are great and I found quality products. It is a unique experience for anyone who has the opportunity.

This is a really wonderful place to visit. There is just do much history here. The picture doesn't do it justice for as huge as it is.

By Cameron McCaa |

I felt a sense of familiarity and calm as I walked toward the monument. I stayed an extra day on a business trip. Well worth the time. Also went to Custer State Park and Crazy Horse...also recommended.

By Rebecca M |

This was a bucket list item for us. It is a remarkable piece of art. The detail was amazing. The theater was informative. Gift shop was far too busy so we did not stay. It is a quick visit as there is not much to do but it is well worth the trip

By plfdakar |

The 4 presidents who marked the United States from reunification, to conquest, to the establishment of the constitution and to the prosperity of the country. This memorial is a must-see with the telling of this fabulous story at night, it’s magical.

A very moving experience.

By Vickie P |

Awesome! The patriotism was palpable. We hiked the President Trail 2 days in a row. Visited the Museum. A MUST SEE! We stayed for the nighttime presentation, when the lights were cast on the Memorial, everyone in the audience oood and ahhhd!!! The veterans in attendance came up on stage and we sang The National Anthem. Brought happy tears to my eyes.

Family Trip Summer 2021

By Elle R |

***Went in summer 2021** Great historical thing to see. Night view was a must see as well as day time view! There is a Native America version nearby that you can see as well, it's an easy pull over a snap a pic for that. Not worth paying to go in but still cool to see that one from the road too.

By suedelle2023 |

The monument of the presidents is interesting. History is always good for everyone. The gift store is always a fun place to buy memorabilia.

By Joebob747 |

Plan about 2 hrs unless doing the hiking trails. Great place. Makes you think about how all these guys put their country and others before themselves. We could use a lot more of that today.

Glad I saw it up-close

By bgcchick88 |

It's cool to see up-close, but it's not something I would come back to. Started doing the trail, but I didn't see the point part way through. TONS of stairs for the trail, so be cautious of that.

Majestic!

By coolmammaa |

National parks pass not accepted! Only $10 parking that is valid for one year
Stunning and majestic sculpture on this 60ft rock! Make sure you go down to the sculpture studio to learn how Gutzan Borglum engineered and sculpted George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln!

By Gretz |

Would highly recommend going at sunset and staying for the lighting ceremony, which is held each night once darkness sets in. A 10 min video is played on a massive screen in front of the monument, highlighting the four presidents legacies. Plenty of seating for the video and ceremony, both on the lower and upper levels. My 6 yr old was locked in and giving his full attention, which is saying a lot about how good this was.

By Jon C |

Great time to visit - no crowds.....all peace and quiet, plenty of space and opportunities to snap pictures, explore and absorb the tranquility.

By JCruz61 |

A dream come true.
We had been rehearsing a trip to see Mount Rushmore for a long time and for some reason it didn't work out, until we went.
We weren't able to do the trail and visit the sculptors' studio, as they were closed due to the snow, but it was still worth it and left us wanting more. We will return to see the night ceremony that takes place daily and complete the attractions that were pending at another station.
There is a video that tells how the project was executed and completed, very interesting to watch and especially the reason why it was built this way. An example of Patriotism.

Entrance is free, you only pay for parking.

By Tarra |

This is a total 5!!! Just a beautiful thing to see. The park is beautiful clean and rangers very knowledgeable! I am so glad be made the time to come see!

By ldgp14 |

We visited Mount Rushmore on our trip to the US, the 6hr drive from Denver was well worth it to see this iconic American memorial. As we visited in the off season it meant we were one of the only people there so we really got to take it in and enjoy the view in the snow. We really loved seeing it so I would say it is well worth a visit.

By Michael F |

Enjoyed it better at night. The lighting was great. Anyone going to rapid city black hills badlands should download Guidealong app

Without the app we would have missed 2 thirds of what we saw. They even gave directions and times to go certain places. The app guided us to the sunset as well as Wyoming.

Beautiful

By sharrongeg |

Stunning memorial. The parking was just $5 if you are 60 or older (honor system). Best to park on the top 2 levels of parking structure (level 5 or 6). The walkway up to the viewing platform was stunning and very well designed.

Wish there had been more signage at the viewing platform.

🎶 God Bless Americaaaa 🎶

By Caroline H |

I felt pride for my country visiting here. Amazing place and the sculptures are much bigger than you can imagine. There is a little hike around thats about 0.6 miles that mostly anyone could do.

By ASGLondon |

This is a gem of a monument.

The monument is free, but you have to pay for parking. There is plenty of parking and plenty of machines to pay for parking (there is no need to line up at the ones in the garage).

The facilities are nice and very well maintained. There are plenty of restrooms available.

There is a hiking trail around the base of the monument. It is a pretty easy hike and well worth the close up views.

There is also a viewing area and amphitheater.

The staff I interacted with were all friendly.

It's cool, but also sort of one-note...

By thursowick |

Mt. Rushmore – we wandered into the museum and saw some interesting things about the process of the sculpting of the mountain. Then we headed out to the amphitheatre where there was an intro by a park ranger. He talked about protecting our freedoms. I certainly hope we can. Then there was a film that explained about each of the four presidents depicted and it was quite nice. The mountain was lit up at that point which was lovely but dimmer than I expected. Then there was a flag ceremony where they invited up to the stage any military veterans or current. It was very patriotic—I got a bit teary-eyed.

By Robin M |

We took a bus full of people to the Black Hills to see Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Lucky for us, we had a beautiful day to see it. The memorial is spectacular, a real tribute to our founding fathers. After viewing the memorial, we took the path to get a closer look. I highly recommend doing this.

There is a restaurant with a handful of food choices. We ordered the Buffalo Burger and were not disappointed. Delicious. The lines for the food were chaotic. After waiting in a long line to order, you just stand around waiting for your number to be called. They don't tell you where to go to pick it up. They don't tell you where to get condiments or napkins. The tables are dirty and need cleaned. A few workers were just standing around talking.

There is a gift shop, along with a museum that shows a short movie on the history of the memorial. I highly recommend.

The Ave. of Flag (State & Territories) brings you closer and closer to 4 of our presidents

By mwhamburger |

it's simply a stunning view of the presidential memorial when you walk down the Avenue of Flags. Lots of people but not really overcrowded. Beyond seeing the four faces carved into the granite peak there is much more to see and explore; some of it via many stairs. Take your time to take it all in

By Jessica M |

We got to park late but staff friendly and helpful. Tour the presidential tour. It was great evening. Not crowded. Lot of people eating ice cream sold at site. Sun setting was nice color on monument. We found some geocaches and camped for night. Very relaxing visit

A good view of history

By Karen G |

If you’re in South Dakota, this is a must-see. The trail is very well done allowing for different views of the sculptures. There is an amphitheater that allows for various events. A naturalization ceremony was happening there during our visit.

A True American Treasure

A True American Treasure. Every American should see this amazing part of our history. Bring your family and share this with them. It is truly spectacular!

By Sara T |

On my bucket list for years … my visit didn’t disappoint! People have said to me, not much in the area. I didn’t care, I just had to see the presidents. They have a nice walkway to get closer to the monument and signs highlighting the construction and the presidents. Huge gift shop!!

Majestic Mt. Rushmore

By Wes S |

To behold Mt. Rushmore was incredible. Arrive early 0800 or so and beat the crowds. I get to scratch this off my bucket list.

MLK was not a president and not on the monument.

By bdapec |

Everything was going great with our visit to the park until Ranger Dan jumped on his liberal band wagon and pushed a racist agenda during the lighting of the monument. The air just went out of the venue from the hundreds of people in attendance. This monument has nothing to do with MLK or the telling the crowd to vote a certain way. The first 20 minutes was all about MLK and that these four president's insinuated to be racist. Ruined a good visit.

By Sandy Q |

We were in awe of Mount Rushmore. It was so beautiful in person, and we were lucky to have perfect weather. What an amazing piece of art and the visitor center was like a museum that provided you with all of the background and the incredible artistry / genius that went into creating this landmark. Highly recommend for all ages, pictures do not do it justice, it's a must see site!

Anniversary trip we’ve wanted to take for years

By Rjirwin2 |

We’ve wanted to see Mt Rushmore since we got married 33 years ago so this was the year! It’s amazing! The museums and movies on site are wonderful and a must see. Be prepared to do steps if you walk the trail, I think there’s 472, I could be wrong but close. We spent a couple hours here then did the 1880 Train then came back for the night lighting ceremony. I was disappointed in the lighting ceremony as they just lit up the monument with regular lights and sang the national anthem. I was under the impression it was more than that. I wouldn’t set 2 hours to wait to see it again. You pay a parking fee only and can come and go for 24 hours without repaying the fee. There is no fee to enter otherwise. There is a ice cream shop and a souvenir shop where you enter, we shopped but sadly didn’t get ice cream but it looked very good!

By Roger & Barb |

Our first time visit to Mount Rushmore Memorial did not disappoint. It's certainly one of our nation's treasures and so very glad we took the time to visit on our way to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. And having stopped at the Badlands first, we spent more time than anticipated and thus, arrived at Mount Rushmore later in the evening than we anticipated. But that turned out as a bonus as we were unaware of the evening ceremony. It was simply wonderful and so patriotic! A must see when your in the area for sure!

By KVO1234 |

More than AWESOME! The feeling of patriotism we got from our visit there was unbelievable. We went both during the day and went back for the evening lighting. The presentation before and after the lighting was immeasurable. The music, everyone singing the National Anthem and the salute to the veterans in attendance made it even better than we could have hoped. If visiting here doesn't make you a proud American, I don't think anything will!

Take the nature trail back up from the artist studio to the parking lot to spare you 425 steps up!

By Cathie J |

Easy parking, seniors pay $5.00. Went June 1st and it was getting warm but not unbearable. Do go to the Artist studio down 425 steps but going back up, take the nature trail to the parking lot! Easy peasy!

Would recommend

By Jayden |

Very interesting. It allows you to get kind of close and it is very beautiful. There are 49 states written there and there is on state that I missing. Hint, Fresno is in that state. There is ice cream and many different shops there.

Awesome! GO EARLY!!!!!

By Queen J |

I visited Mt. Rushmore early on a Monday in June. Here's the scoop:

The monument features the faces of 4 notable U.S. presidents (as of 1941 when the monument was completed): Washington, Jefferson, T. Roosevelt, and Lincoln.

GO EARLY before the MASSIVE crowds appear! Though the   "official" opening hour of the Visitor Center is 8am, the site is free, open-air, and accessible 24/7. The parking lot opens at 5am and a short 8 min walk from the parking lot will lead you to the viewing platform.

Plan to spend 1 - 3 hrs here. If you simply wish to walk to the viewing platform, snap a few pics, and then bounce, plan on 30 min. Most visitors spend an average of 2.5 hours here. It is definitely NOT an all-day activity.

Tip: The night before my visit, I stayed at the Magnussen Grand View in Keystone, the cheapest and closest motel, about a 6min drive to the parking structure.

At 7am, two levels of the parking garage were already full. If I had known I could walk the entire site before 8am, I would've arrived at 6:30am.

When you arrive, you will enter the parking lot through a lane next to an unmanned toll booth. The barrier arm will automatically rise after you reach out the window and take the dispensed ticket. Parking is the only fee you'll pay and it's good for 2 days. DON'T leave it on your car dashboard. Take the ticket with you and pay the $12 fee at any of the automated parking kiosks before you leave.

*Note: The machines were really finicky and kept spitting people's cards back out, canceling the payment. It's easier to just pay cash. You get your ticket back after the screen informs you that you've successfully paid, and then you feed it into the ticket machine at the empty toll booth on the way out. The machine reads it, then rolls the ticket back out for you to grab in order to raise the arm and exit the parking lot. Hold onto the ticket if you plan to return the next day or at night for the free narrated explanation of the presidents/ monument.

Visitors first walk down the Avenue of Flags. I thought I'd steamroller right down that alley, and I DID when I first arrived. I took a few pics and then scurried on to the viewing platform. But on the way back, I found myself examining each of the flags with interest, guessing which state it represented (before looking to see if I was right). So you may want to factor in a little browsing time here if that sort of thing interests you, too.

At the end of the Avenue of Flags is a very large concrete platform from which to view the monument head-on. So many visitors have complained about how far away the monument is that I almost expected to see a faint image of blurry faces in the distance. But standing on the viewing deck, I was not disappointed at all. Any closer and the viewer's focus would shift to examine the details of the cuts and shapes of particular elements, detracting from the realism of the overall image. Besides, smartphone cameras today make it possible for everyone to capture details in photos.

To the side of the viewing deck is a sign pointing to the Presidential Trail, a paved, yet uneven narrow path that meanders from one side of the monument to the other, looping back around to the viewing deck.

Though the views from the path are only slightly closer than the views from the main observation deck, the trail allows visitors the opportunity to see the monument from different angles, which is especially helpful when trying to view Roosevelt's recessed face. Poor Teddy is not just metaphorically, but literally overshadowed by Lincoln. As the day lengthens, so do the shadows on the monument.

Although the President's Trail is little over half a mile, it does have 422 stairs, so it takes a while to walk it. I would plan 30min -1hr to meander the trail, read the occasional info signs, and to stop and gaze at / take pictures of the monument. As you approach the viewing deck near the end of the loop, a short trail spur (1 min) leads to the original, small viewing platform.

The artist's studio is located about halfway down the trail. We didn't visit because it opens at 8 and we were there early, but I did peer inside at what looked like an empty room. I inquired about it later at the Visitor Center and was told it housed a few of the tools and equipment used for the sculpting, but the main emphasis was the ranger talk describing the process. I didn't feel like I missed much since that information was in the main museum near the entrance.

A food court is on site, though it was not open until 10 or 11.

Go through the Visitor's Center at 8am on your way out. The museum inside will be crowded from the moment it opens, so you might as well hit it last. I spent about an hour in the museum - more time than I had planned. It's not a particularly large museum, but there are many displays, photos, and explanations of the conception, approval, and planning of the monument, as well as the stages and challenges of the sculpting process. It was interesting.

All in all, I really enjoyed my visit here and urge you once again to go early before 8am or late in the afternoon after 6pm. Between those hours, it is crazy crowded.

Hope that helps!
Enjoy Mount Rushmore!

Travel Tip: If you're planning to see the Crazy Horse monument as well, I suggest seeing this first. Though Crazy Horse is nowhere near completion, featuring only the face of the warrior, that face is three times the size of the entire Mt Rushmore monument. In addition, the Crazy Horse site has five separate museum buildings. You will likely spend twice the amount of time at Crazy Horse than you did here at Mt. Rushmore.

By Robert L |

Some fellow travelers downplayed this - claiming that you only have to see it for a minute. However, the walk to the base was excellent and the history of how they accomplished this is also excellent.

By Barry S |

We were debating on whether or not to stop at Mount Rushmore after reading mixed reviews, but we're glad we did. We stayed in Rapid City, SD the night before and made the 30-40 minute drive arriving around 9 a.m. on 7/18/2025. Being seniors, we only had to pay $5 for parking, and there was ample covered parking in the garage. I appreciated the staff directing vehicles to an open toll lane to pull into and then again directing vehicles into the garage.

Easy walk up to the Monument and the view is spectacular. It also helps that we had clear skies and temps in the 70s. We got some great photos and especially enjoyed the film "Carved in Stone" that's presented in the Visitor Center located below the viewing terrace. It was very informative and got me thinking differently about the Monument.

Plan on spending about an hour minimum to park, walk up, take photos, watch the video, and leave. There are the usual souvenirs to be had in the gift shop if that's your thing. I prefer to buy such items that are locally sourced and sold by a local merchant.

Overall, I recommend making the stop.

Truly amazing!

By Miranda |

The drive into the park is beautiful! I got to see a goat on the side of the mountain! It was really neat! One of the employees said it was the first sighting in a few weeks! The parking is a bit confusing and a bit of a walk to the park but it was fine. Once inside the park you walk up a large walk way to Mt Rushmore! There is a small museum inside the building with information about the men/crew that worked on it. There is also a movie you can watch about it too! There are many spots to look at and get pictures of Mt. Rushmore! It really was something to see! Truly amazing! So glad I stopped and saw it!

Patriotic Magnificent Memorial

By Elizabeth O |

The presidential trail is super easy, so ignored the sign reading "Strenuous contains 425 stairs" However, the stairs are spread far apart, you might do 5 flight of stairs which are wide and low anybody can do it, and walked around a very well done trail surrounded by the beauty of the forest, benches every where around the trail made of wood and with hand rails, the most flight of stairs that are made out of wood are about 20 at the end of the trail. So do not be discouraged by the sign, and enjoy the presidential trail. The weather was in the 60"s so it was beautiful for a hike, I read in so many reviews that you can't hike from the Keystone Town to the memorial but it is also false. I hiked and it took me only 45 minutes, it was a moderate high, it does not have a hiking trail so I hike the uphill driving road but it has designated area on the sides for runners, bikes, and hikers, I saw one runner going up the hill. The nice thing about walking it is that you take many good photos with different views. Posted them at Instagram at lizzieolguin .

By MariaBCalifornia |

My husband and I really enjoyed seeing Mt. Rushmore. People told us it wasn't very big, but we thought it was as big as expected. They offer parking garages for a fee, then it's an easy walk from there to see it. Nice gift shop with a ton of items too.

By Mollysdad55 |

Excellent few hours spent here. Very well organised, reasonable prices. We’ll worth a visit.
We had a snack sitting outside in the sun overlooked by the presidents, and walked the circular trail past the base of the monument.

Awesome experience

By Laura M |

This is so awesome. I just sat and looked for 45 minutes. We were not able to walk the entire trail but we did make it to the observation deck.

By Nancy H |

mount rushmore was beautiful the gift shop was very busy. Alittle pricey but to be expected. Did like that the parking ticket is good for a year so if go back can use again.

By Mike S |

We went to Mt Rushmore an explored several shops, and followed the path that goes near the bottom of the monument. In the evening we stayed for the nightly light show. All was very interesting and worth going to. The only cost was $10 for parking. We have been here before, and will be back.

By Kay K |

We drove the Iron Mountain Road from Custer State Park to Mount Rushmore. Beautiful drive that gives you several views of Mount Rushmore ahead of actually being there. A different perspective! Upon arrival, your National Park Pass (if you have one) is not accepted. Parking here is a separate charge. There is a lovely loop ( with quite a few stairs) that loops in front of the visitor center. If you can catch a park ranger presentation at the sculptors studio, it is very interesting and gives a lot more information on the background of the monument. There is also a museum that is quite informative!

Amazing

By vhash77 |

Simply amazing! So much to learn as to how this memorial was sculpted. The Presidential Loop walk was good. We started with heading to the sculptures house first, which I am glad we did - while there are 425 steps on this loop, there are plenty of seating areas at intervals.

We enjoyed the evening illumination service. And of course the Thomas Jefferson Vanilla Ice Cream was wonderful!

The only negative - we couldn't get the parking ticket exit machine to take our ticket - so after several attempts we left. We had already paid for our parking at the kiosk .

Must go at least once in your life

By TinyTownQueen |

if you have never seen it, you must go at least once in your life. The actual monument is smaller than you think in real life, but it is still an amazing thing to see. They have built up a wonderful viewing area that has plenty of space for everyone and lots of photo opps. There is an educational museum/gift shop place inside that has nice gifts too.

Awesome fun, fun for children, would definitely go back

By sage szondy |

One of the coolest sites I’ll ever visit miss seeing it, Would love to go back to it, Also great tour and then we watch this historical video about how it was made.

Great visit

By jmasc1 |

This is a great visit. The self-guided audio tour is only $6/person, and really worth it. It has 29 stops on it and provides more information on the history, the included presidents, the indigenous people of the area, etc. The tour takes you along the Presidential Trail, which is great. It is not stroller friendly. Has 400+ stairs. You could still listen to the tour and not make all the stops.

Pretty cool to see finally in real life. We did the nice trail to get up close. It was a little more hilly than I thought it would be. My favorite part, honestly, was that they brought in a member of a native tribe to do a presentation. She spoke about her culture, about stereotypes that are harmful, about how to better preserve her culture and did some dances for the crowd. She was WONDERFUL. Was really nice to actually see this here - in an area so impacted by the displacement of native peoples in this area.

More than expected

We came here on a cold and drizzly morning, with the monument initially covered in fog. Over the course of the morning we enjoyed the video and the museum, and came out to find the fog gone and blue skies! This led to a great morning here, since I think the weather kept many people away. We did the short walk around the monument to the Artist's Studio where we also caught the Ranger's talk. I wasn't expecting much, but I was very impressed by the workmanship, the stunning views, and of course our tremendous NPS employees.

Another National Park/Memorial checked off with a stamp in our Passport book. We went here twice during our trip and enjoyed both times. First time, we went at night and enjoyed the presentation prior to the lighting of the Monument. It was very moving, as all military personnel were honored. There's alot of seating available, upper and lower areas. We went again during the day and got there early, around 7a so we could walk the Presidential Trail before it got too hot and crowded. It was perfect going then and seeing the Memorial from many different angles with different lighting. Plaques along the trail provided more history and information, and were interesting to read. There are alot of steps on this trail, so it was nice doing that prior to the later day heat. Coming back down was much better, as we took the paved trail back to the main area. There we saw some shows with music, dancing and story telling, put on by Native American women, which were very enjoyable too. The visitor center and gift areas also had alot to offer. Parking was very accessible and was not a far walk from the attraction.

Mount Rushmore is a have to see at least ones in your lifetime . We arrived as it opened as it can get very busy over the peak summer time . Entry was cheap with parking included . It’s very well maintained , clean and very informative . Guides everywhere to explain everything Easy walk to the closest point and back great couple of hours spend there

We were here because we wanted to see the monument from the Hitchcock film North by Northwest in real life.

With all the tourists it wasn't quite as impressive.
You're also a bit far away in the visitor center.
But there was interesting information about the design and construction of the whole thing in an exhibition.
There was a walkway under the monument with walkways and stairs, but we didn't do that because of the hot weather.

The monument isn't that old, built in the 1930s,
but it corresponds very much to the patriotic ideas of many Americans and is quite highly praised. That's probably why there are so many visitors.
The center also has food, a coffee bar and ice cream.

Do try the evening presentation at Mt. Rushmore

We went to the evening show at the ampitheater. It was excellent. The ranger who narrated presented a wonderful personal story about going to Mt. Rushmore as a child and aspiring to be a park ranger. The history presented was excellent and the lights very cool. Colored lights might have been nicer or a different view for the lights as they lit the president's sculptures too bright. Otherwise, very nicely done. A great night and worth it!

Breathtaking view. Loved it all

Very beautiful. Ample parking. Flags of each state nice touch. Nice seating area. The mountain was viewed from many locations. Very easy to navigate. A must see! USA!

Was on my bucket list and did not disappoint! My 9 year old grandson really enjoyed himself as well. If you take the trail to the base there are virtually no stairs to the left and ALL stairs to the right. Had I known this prior I wouldn’t have done the loop, but glad now to say I survived.

Everyone should see this

Basically what I expected. I had always wanted to go as a bucket list thing, glad I finally got there. No admission cost but parking was $10, $5 for seniors. Parking was easy and going in September, there weren’t so many people. Worth it to do the little hike around the grounds. and be sure to come back for the lighting ceremony when it turns dark. Times vary during the year, so verify before going.
The whole area is very well maintained and if you’re older, you shouldn’t have trouble getting around.

Bucket list item fulfilled!

My husband and I have wanted to see Mt Rushmore since we got married 33 years ago and decided this was the year! We drove straight through and spent a week in S Dakota. We planned an excursion every day and saw all we could see while there. We spent a very windy day at the memorial, saw all the movies, personal exhibits, and took the whole trail in…I was led astray on the trail…it seemed so nice starting out, but what goes down must come back up. I’m not in the best shape so the steps back up really winded me and we stopped several times to just get our breath (were 53 & 55 but work all the time) totally worth it though. We left mid day and came back for the night light show, that wasn’t much so I wouldn’t make a special trip just for it. The movies and live exhibitions are the best part, so glad we got to visit.

A must do!

We planned our vacation around seeing Mt Rushmore. I've seen pictures all my life and was so excited to visit. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. We also enjoyed the evening lighting ceremony. If you're in the area for a few days, you can see the evening lighting ceremony any night. Otherwise, plan your visit to align with the ceremony. Definitely recommend everyone to visit!

Very nice exterior layout. Easy to get there. Only parking costs $10. There is a path that goes to the foot of the mountain.
