Monumental

The giant cross has become part of a veterans monument with touching tributes. The panorama high above the city is stunning. We only spent about a half hour but if you don't have impatient younger travelers take time with this one.

Nice View

By Fontek |

Nice view atop a hill overlooking San Diego. Save it for a clear day. The many memorial plaques are worth viewing.

Honor and Respect for Veterans!

By Vincent F |

This Veteran experience is world class and brings honor to those who served in the Armed Forces! It’s totally wheelchair/mobility scooter accessible with ramps that allow you to access to the top of the monument. This wonderful monument should be on everyone’s to go list, to show support/respect. The views of the San Diego entire landscape are second to none!

Great Tribute

By Chiefmlw |

Outstanding tribute to our men and women who have and are serving our country to protect our freedoms.

Memorial and lookout

Beautiful memorial with picture on plaques of veterans. Park is.a great lookout to San Diego and surrounding area. Choose a clear day.

A reminder of the price for freedom

By LeonaT |

A day after the shooting in PA, I drove up the road to this memorial. I wish here in Canada, we celebrated our veterans this way.

It was very foggy up on the memorial, which just added to it. I came across a couple of veterans who actually liberated the death camps during WWII and it made me sad that it seems that the freedom these men and women fought hard and proud for, not only for their country and their families but the country and families of foreigners that they didn't know, could experience peace.

This is a place to come and remember and reach out against the haterd revealing itself once again.

Impressive Veterans Memorial

By nicolediane |

High on a hill with great views of San Diego area. A Vietnam War veteran was there as a volunteer and showed us around. He pointed out his plaque with picture from his time in the service. The plaques are donated by family and friends. Having the pictures make them interesting. All branches of service and wars are included. We wondered around and stopped to read many of the plaques. So many young men and woman are honored here.

What a place for a monument

By Edwelsh |

We kept seeing this place from down below. After finally making it up there, we saw that what we were seeing was the monument under wraps for refurbishment. Nonetheless it’s a very moving tribute and it’s a beautiful spot for it. On top of the hill with unobstructed views of the surrounding area. It wasn’t a very clear day but still spectacular.

great views

By 924aloha |

very touching to read the plaques of the fallen soldgers. Interesting that there are no dates but defined by service and pictures. Great stop.

Loved It

By AJ. |

Much respect to those that put this together and keep it maintained. Having only read about our history it was inspiring to put faces and names with those that lived it. Special place that I won’t forget.

You will be moved by your visit!

By BruinDan |

The Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial is considered one of the most unique veterans’ memorials in the United States, as it is the only such memorial to honor veterans (living and deceased) from the Revolutionary War to the current global War on Terror. My wife and I had the pleasure of visiting this memorial during the latter part of September 2021.

There are a number of walls that are covered with thousands of black granite plaques that each include a picture of the veteran with a brief summary of their military experience. Honorees include Presidents, twelve Medal of Honor recipients, celebrities, and veterans from all service branches, from generals to privates.

It is a relatively short drive from La Jolla Village to the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial. The views at the memorial are amazing (Mt. Soledad is the highest point in La Jolla), but of greater significance is the memorial itself. Thanks to the friendly and informative docent, we learned some of the interesting, inspiring and touching stories behind some the honoree plaques there. It was a truly moving experience.

We saw a number of people drive up, take quick photos of the cross and the view, and then leave -- by doing that they definitely missed out. We left feeling truly humbled and so grateful to those veterans who have courageously served our country.

GO GO GO!!

By Cindy T |

Must see for anyone. Beautiful 360 views, and very powerful memorial to veterans from all wars. The veteran details (and photo) are etched into black tile so you can see the people and relate to them. I loved entire experience, and there are some great photos to be had from this elevation. easy to access, nice and quiet to reflect.

Inspiring memorial.

By Janis |

Was part of a guided tour and glad it was included. Short stop at the memorial with great views of the area. No charge

Memorial with a GREAT VIEW

By Beth S |

In your GPS, put in the Memorial, not the mountain. We went on a sunny clear day. It is humbling to walk among the plaques of our brave and valiant military personnel. The view is breathtaking from the top and you can see the ocean and the San Diego basin. When visiting, be aware the temperature many be different and their may be wind; so come prepared.

Amazing Views

By Jas |

This place is awesome! When visiting La Jolla or San Diego I definitely recommend stopping by this lookout to checkout the amazing views.

The Top of Soledad Mountain in La Jolla

By Ted W |

so easy to get to as the Via Capri road off of Torrey Pines road leads you right there and it is a 360 degree view of unapparelled beauty of the San Diego and La jolla area. What a treat to be at the tope of a mountain far above the fabulous beaches below. Do not miss this if you are in the San Diego area.

One of a few places to Honor our Veterans

By Alexa S |

Beautiful place to visit. So much history there as Veteran Plaques give details as to the member Name, Rank, which War. Perfect place for this Memorial as you get Vista views N/S/E/W of San Diego. Small parking area, handicapped accessibility. At times there is someone there to tell you the story of the wonderful place.

views are amazing

By Gloria R |

we happened to visit on a very cloudy day, but the views were still great. We sat and enjoyed the views for a good while. I recommend coming here to reflect or meditate, was lovely

A Very Moving Monument

By KoopaKybra |

Our family stopped by Mt. Soledad for about 30 minutes during a scenic tour of the San Diego. That was just enough time to get some great panoramic photos of the city and also appreciate the memorial for our country's veterans.

Very Moving!

By Barbara W |

This was a very moving experience for the teenagers in my group. A gentleman was there to answer all of our questions. Very interesting & solemn.

Stunning Soledad Views

By Erika H |

What a pleasant surprise. On an adventure on a Sunday afternoon, no real agenda just out and about. My husband and I found the Mt Soledad but I will be honest, GPS in San Diego can be challenging. Finally we just used our maps app to figure our own way there. When we arrived parking was tight but people are constantly arriving and leaving so you can find parking just may need to circle a few times if it is busy. We were there on a semi cloudy day but the views are 360 degrees of stunning (even with clouds moving in) It's a beautiful memorial to the men and women of our Armed Forces as well. The walls lined with images and mini bios of so many veterans. It was a sight to behold. I would recommend taking the few steps if you are able to gain even better views looking over San Diego.
There are portable bathrooms available with a hand washing station as well.

Historical Landmark

By Lisa V |

La Jolla, a settlement fo the 1800's, is comprised of two hills. The hill to the north is surmounted by UCSD with The Shores, Scripp's Pier, Scripp's Aquarium and Scripp's Institution of Oceanography at the base. The hill to the south, at the top of Nautilus Street, is surmounted by The Cross and, at the base, WindanSea Beach. The cross has a long history and is tied to the community. Generations of high school kids have spent long evenings here looking over their hometown dreaming of their future. The cross was toppled once by a combination of wether and age. This is the second. The area was transformed due to a long, legal battle involving the separation of church and state. History is to be maintained not ignored as it is a fact. San Diego was established as one of the missions along the coast of California providing for settlement, care and travel along with the religious connotations of that era which have long ago passed replaced by the significance only as landmark. The Cross is now under the care of the Mt. Soledad Memorial Association and Mt. Soledad Veteran's Memorial. Around the base of The Cross are a series of short walls and brick walkways memorializing our some of our nation's veterans, including my father, Lt Donald Chase Voelker. There is no other place in San Diego that offers an all encompassing breathtaking view of the area, day or night. (The view from Cabrillo National Monument above Fort Rosecrans is also spectacular but not all encompassing.)

spend half an hour max. panoramic views

By herbertl633 |

spend half an hour max. panoramic views. high above the entire area you will see from the ocean to Mexico.

So Solemn and breath taking!

By sukie630 |

We were so glad we stopped at Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial. It is located on top of a hill overlooking the city with a big cross honoring the veterans of war. We found memorial plaques like Sgt. York, Ronald Reagan, Glenn Miller, Mark Lee (1st Navy Seal killed in Iraq), James McNamara, etc. My husband is thinking about having a plaque for his father there.

Amazing views

By E McC |

We always take visitors to this site. Great memorial to our vets and amazing views of the area. A must do for everyone.

San Diego

By davesQ2806YK |

The overlook view is awesome. The memorial itself is intense when you stop to reflect on how so few gave so much and others gave it all.

Worth a stop!

By Emily T |

This place is worth a visit! The view is amazing. Drive as far up to the top as you can and look for parking. If no spots, drive until you see some.

Cool spot for 360 views

By Keith T |

Definitely respect the monument to the military, no doubt. They had room up top for a picnic and can see 360 degrees around San Diego. If it wasn't cloudy today would be ideal for a sunset also.

Worth checking out

By travlingirl61 |

Very easy drive to see this memorial. The view is beautiful and the veterans memorial was interesting and moving.

Visited the monument during our recent trip to San Diego. Very beautiful and impressive. Loved the pictures of veterans on display. Reminded me some of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington DC. The huge cross was also something I will never forget. Don’t miss it when you are in the area.

Memorable and Worth the ride

By Dan P |

Rode e-bikes along the shore and up to Mt Soledad. Very easy and enjoyable. Mt Soledad is a touching tribute! Found Eisenhower, Truman and Bob Hope markers. Glad it went private and kept the cross! Beautiful 360 views!

Very moving

By dingydawn21 |

This monument is so moving and the view is just breathtaking. Spent quite a while viewing the plaques and want to thank the volunteers for their time in explaining the monument and dedication in taking care of it. It was drizzling rain and they were constantly wiping and cleaning. Flag ceremony was just starting when we had to leave but it was a very memorable visit

Wonderful place of honor

By JeepMom05 |

This is a must for visitors to La Jolla, and also for greater San Diego because of the marvelous views and beautiful pictorial memorials of those who have served in all our armed forces, of all backgrounds & faiths.

Highest point

By Enjoy4790 |

Top of La Jolla .....great view you can see most all the way around, nice to go with family friends or a date. You can see the beach and Torrey Pines you can see University City to the east you can see Clairemont a little more south and then you can also see a nice beach view. There is a nice Thai restaurant that is almost within walking distance of there but you will have to Google it because it's tucked away is hidden around the corner from this spot

Korean War memorial

By Judith484 |

Top of Mt Soledad is beautiful to take pictures, walk around, take a nap or bike. Very pretty. Has some parking.

Super view!

By Steve |

If your in La Jolla, you should drive up here. You can even see Mt. Baldy, which must be 80+ miles away.If you're not Christian, the cross is a bit much.

A good walk is rewarded with great views of the La Jolla shoreline and San Diego's hills and canyons.

By Eating Out |

I walk up to the cross every day while I'm visiting my family's home on Mt Soledad. My mom used to do it, and now I do.

Stunning View, Moving Memorial

By tprindy |

A friend took me here. I was pleased to see how service people were honored at this site. The view of San Diego is a marvel.

Lovely tribute

By cv91913 |

Lovely tribute to soldiers. Added is a spectacular view and minutes away from any la Jolla attraction. Free. Ample parking.

a a great tribute to veterans with a view

By Jayandmaryann1988 |

We live very close to the monument, and my wife's father has a plaque which we gave him before he died in 2008. The rows of plaque's are very awe inspiring and moving. The cross has been hotly debated as a freedom of religion issue, but was resolved so for the time being it will stay there. The view is truly spectacular, and it is a great place to see the city, have a picnic and watch a sunrise or sunset.

Grateful reflection

By MominOC |

So thankful someone had the idea to create this peaceful place. Count your blessings and enjoy the individual tributes.

Scenic

By Hari A |

San Diego has scenic areas. The National Veterans Memorial brings back memories with great scenery around.

If near- pop up....

By Kbrey |

Easy drive up the windy road and a beautiful panoramic view of the city. Free parking and easy to walk around. Short and simple- if you are in the area drive to see it, but I would not drive more than 35 minutes for the view.

Overlooks San Diego, LaJolla and more!

By Lauri W |

Very impressive memorial! We went as a part of the LaJolla beach trolley tour. The view is just beautiful, and so is the memorial.

Wonderful Tribute to Veterans!

By Virginia2002 |

What a great tribute to military veterans from all branches of the military and the view is fantastic! It's 360 degrees. We met a volunteer who filled us in on the history of the memorial. He was a wealth of information and spent about 20 minutes talking to us. He pointed out several of the plaques that commemorate about 6 of our presidents including Teddy Roosevelt & Ronald Reagan. It's definitely worth visiting.

Beautiful view

By Rachel M |

Beautiful view, great for picture taking and great memorial to our veterans. Small grassy area. A great spot to start a downhill bike ride

Incredible

By Sahar |

If you want to have a 360º view of San Diego, just go up to Mount Soledad and enjoy the natural features of the city.

Monument to the fallen

By Escape-overseas |

A monument to the fallen over many conflicts. Plaques placed on the walls illustrate the names, decorations and citations of those that are remembered. Standing high above the city the cross stands as a reminder to those who have served their country and who are recorded here.

Memorial

By Sejata |

Amazing, moving experience that is surrounded by beautiful views. Something everyone should do and share with their loved ones.

A sober highlight

By Granbury Sheila M |

We considered this a must see in San Diego and it was! The winding drive up was interesting as we got higher and higher. The view was incredible, almost a 360 degree view, from La Jolla to MCAS Miramar to Mission Bay to downtown and maybe to Mexico.
This monument was beautiful and sober. The white cross dominates the hillside surrounded by personal memorials in marble. There is a Civil War veteran, many Medals of Honor awardees, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, all of the campaigns in the Middle East, living and deceased, and one family of 11 veterans. There is a docent available to answer your questions. You really should see this Veterans Memorial.

Beautiful Views from Mt. Soledad

By jjp372018 |

Mt. Soledad is a wonderful tribute to military service veterans of all branches and religious denominations. The view from the top of the Memorial is spectacular overlooking La Jolla and the Pacific Ocean beaches north and south.

Humble

By Dana |

This place was a very humble place to visit. Especially if you have a family member in the military. It was nice and quiet and when the sun hit the cross it was beautiful!

One of the best views of San Diego, and it's free!

By JanKnee |

Views of the ocean? Yes! View of the county? Yes! Views of downtown? Yes, if the haze has burned off! Try to visit during the week, or early on a weekend, as the place can get pretty crowded. The various plaques that people have paid for to honor military personnel are interesting to read, too.

Nice views

By Uppity Doc |

Just a quick stop for me, the views are breathtaking, the memorial is touching. You can see the pier at ucsd and the coast beautifully.

Not only is the view spectacular, but the many men who served our country are honored there.

By gmares2016 |

Our children had a plaque made for their father. Anyone who has served may have a plaque for a fee. I don't know the cost, since our adult children all chipped in and had it done for their father.

Peter makes the ride great!

By David K |

The Cross and veterans memorial are must see! The views from the top make the trip worth the time, without a doubt!

Nice views and very easy/accessible hikes

By Jason Paul V |

The place is amazing, perched high on a hill overlooking the beach and the inland. There are many individual plaques honoring the people who have served in the Armed Forces through the years. An excellent outing.

A lovely memorial to Vets

By Robin F |

This veterans memorial, for anyone who has served our country, living or dead, is on a lovely hilltop. It reminded me of the Wall in DC. It really is worth the trip.

Beautiful view!!

By Karl A |

Great place especially at night for a great view of the city. Interesting and at the same time informing. A little hard to find so make sure you have a working GPS.

Amazing 360 degree view

By Kevin S |

i strongly suggest a ride up the hill to see this monument. You can see for miles and miles in all directions. Also , it honors our Veterans with pictures and inscriptions on an amazing wall.

Great views of the whole city

By anishapatel30 |

A car park at the top allows for free parking. Great spot for taking photos from high up of the town and you get to learn about service men and women.

Great view and memorial

By Holly O |

This is a great location to get panoramic views of San Diego. We came by electric bike, but it’s also very accessible by car. It memorializes veterans from across history. You can find some famous names. This activity only takes about a half hour.

Very Moving

By PAJAY |

Spent a short time here after walking up to the memorial and really glad we did. Very moving and beautiful memorial to those who served. Worth the short visit.

A Gem amid Spectacular Views

By TheExplorerFamily |

We had read about this Memorial located on the top of a hill. Since it was not too far away from where we were staying, we decided to come here with the family.

The Memorial honors Veterans spanning the era from the Revolutionary War up to the present time War on Terrorism. We found it to be a dignified, respectful and touching tribute to all the branches of service. The design with the bricks and the circular pathways leading up to the large Cross at the top were an impressive and laudatory way to celebrate the lives of the famous and the not-so-famous Veterans. We loved the fact that they have photos and a small bio attached to the names on the granite walls. This makes it so much more personal even if you do not know the people represented here.

It was not at all crowded on the afternoon that we visited, so it felt really peaceful and relaxing simply sitting on the steps taking in everything, or just walking around reading as many plaques as we could. The lovely stories were quite absorbing.

After paying our respects and taking some photos, we walked around the area on the grass and the hiking paths enjoying the spectacular 360 degree panoramic views of the city. We were on the highest point in the area, and the day was sunny and clear, so the expansive views were quite stunning. A good pair of binoculars would have enhanced our viewing pleasure of all that distant beauty. Oh well … Next time.

The place is easy to find, free to visit and there is plenty of parking. So I would recommend just going there for a short visit if you have the time. It can get pretty windy and cool, so make sure you carry a light jacket.

Touching memorial

By Gaboca2020 |

It is worth a drive up to this touching memorial to read the plaques with the names and ponder the number of losses.
The view of the coastline from the Memorial is stunning and it's a perfect place to take a deep breath and relax for a bit.

Fantastic views

By Alex |

Interesting memorial. Plaques with pictures & information about veterans. Fantastic views of San Diego. On a clear day you can see LA & Mexico.

A fitting tribute.

By Chris H |

We took a hike to the memorial on a lovely summer morning and were not disappointed by the memorial and surrounds.

The location is very good with excellent views of the surrounding area.

On the day we visited a couple of Vets were on site, one selling his book and another maintaining the site. Both guys were very chatty and more than willing to talk to visitors.

The memorial has various photographs of Veterans and short biographies of their life and service.

The hike was enjoyable but I would highly recommend taking along fluids and bars to re-charge.

Lovely View

By PuslinchFrankie1 |

It was interesting to see all the photos of war veterans and famous people and also that they are a mixture of living as well as dead. The view of San Diego is spectacular. A quiet and relaxing place to visit for a while.

Amazing views

By Jan H |

You can see 360 degree views up towards north County and Orange County on clear days and all the way to Mexico. It is a must visit.

Great views

By Joel S |

Our friends who live locally suggested going here. The location provides wonderful views of the San Diego area. Water fountains for drinking and an unmarked snack truck are there as well. The Memorial is marked by a rather large cross, likely reflecting the religion of those who promoted its creation. In off season there is ample parking. The drive up to this place is your typical hairpin curve mountain road, likely a strange experience if you hail from flatland areas. Getting here gives a sense of how valuable land is, as it seems that even the steepest property can be converted into a house site. Seems that California buyers are determined to live here and builders are in turn amply creative.

Solemn memorial to our fallen veterans

By AEM7AC |

It's a beautiful well kept and solemn site, but don't expect views of downtown. The views of the area are wonderful, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here unless I was passing by, especially since the drive up is on relatively steep roads.

Now, if your family member is honoured here, this was a beautiful way of cementing their legacy and remembering their sacrifice to our country, and you definitely should visit.

Incredible. What a Tribute and What a View

By LodiWineBob |

Been here more than eight years and it took a Matt Coyle novel (he writes detective novels featuring La Jolla and San Diego) to get us down to see this tremendously inspirational monument. Each plaque tells a fitting story of the men and women who have served our country.

Getting to the monument can be an adventure and up close parking is tough, so be prepared to walk a few hundred yards uphill for viewing, More than worth the walk as the views of San Diego County are spectacular. Great place to reflect and be thankful.

Nice view

By Southendwesthamfan |

If you're in the area then worth a drive uptown the top. There are some nice views of the coast to the northwest and views of the city to the south but nothing amazing.

#1 spot to see the sunrise.

By Erik B |

Sunrise was amazing! We got there about 30-45 minutes before actual sunrise to see it go from darkness to light. Sit on top of the stairs at the monument

Amazing views, unforgettable visit

By julamiller2019 |

A friend and I were in the area for a conference, and had extra time on Sunday. I'd heard about Mt. Soledad and the legal fight over the cross monument, and on a whim decided to visit. The parking lot was nearly full on this clear, blue day, and people were settled along the edge of the mountain on lawn chairs with telephoto lenses. My friend guessed it -- the Blue Angels were about to fly at an air show over Miramar!

You can see everything by slowly driving the loop, but it's worth getting out and walking to the top of the steps. Walking the monument, you can also see hundreds of memorial plaques for veterans of every branch of service.

Lovely time. Beautiful place. Extraordinary views. Polite visitors. It takes so little time to see that it's a do-not-miss, in my opinion.

Another beautiful San Diego view.

By douglashH7552JA |

Spectacular 360 degree views from ocean to mountains. Also a great place to sail kites. Another outstanding spot for a sunset.

Well worth a visit

By traveller0752_10 |

With a fantastic 360 view and a real tribute to America's military services this monument ir really worth the time it takes to get there. There is plenty of parking after the drive to the top of the highest elevation in the area.brimg your camera to capture the moment.

Worth a trip up the hill to visit

By 2marcopolos |

This is a very moving memorial to those american who gave their lives for their country. It is located at the top of a hill an you can see all over San Diego from the top. Take some time to read the various stories of the men an women who served.

Awesome all the way around

By timothyeruiz |

Great place for a fine view if the surrounding area. The plaques of the military members are such a great tribute. There's even one Confederate soldier plaque, Drury Bailey. This is a great place to visit!

2018 Reunion Memorial Service

By Intekdan |

One of the ships I served on in the Navy had its annual reunion in San Diego. We held our memorial service for crew mates we have lost at Mt. Soledad. It's a fascinating spot with pictures and histories of veterans. The views of the city from up there a great.

Beautiful views any time of day

By DrMomof4 |

Sunset is particularly spectacular, but you can see the entire San Diego area from this FREE spot. Well worth a visit. Especially to remember freedom is not free.

Beautiful views!!

By Catmama15 |

Great views of the area (360°) and a fine tribute to veterans. A very helpful docent, Carol, was very knowledgeable and showed us different plaques. Worth a trip! Free!

Beautiful view/respectful

By Shayla V |

Very neat on how they honor those who served. And if you know people who have served you can add them to the wall.

Beautiful and touching

By Anna911 |

Spectacular views of La Jolla and San Diego, combined with a very touching Memorial. If you have access to a car, and can easily get to the top of the hill, I highly recommend it.

Special place

By Ponytail79 |

What a beautiful view! It’s the highest point of the area and you can see for miles and miles. The memorial itself is nice. It’s in need of a few repairs but definitely worth the quick visit.

Spectacular View of San Diego

By Nancy M |

I walk to this monument from my house; so I'm pretty familiar with its unique vantage point for San Diegans. When you stand on top, you have a 360° of the whole city. To the south, you can see Mexico; to the north, you can see the coastal cities linking Orange county. In one direction you see the Coronado bridge crossing to Coronado Island and the Pacific Ocean, and in the other direction, you see the mountains heading east to Arizona. It's a spectacular view where various highlights can be seen as you pivot around the top of Mt. Soledad. Can you imagine sitting there on the Fourth of July. I counted eight firework displays last year flashing up all around the city! It's a special place, and I take all visitors to Mt. Soledad so they can see why we call San Diego "America's Finest City."

Great view!

By PerpetualMotion19 |

Mt Soledad and Cabrillo Monument are the 2 places to go in San Diego to see a nice view on a sunny day. I grew up in San Diego and back in the day this is where teens would come to "park" - didn't see any of that on this visit, though. My husband and teen rented bikes and enjoyed riding to the top, and, even more, coming back down!

Moving memorial

By tampatowers |

We had read about this memorial and decided to see it. We’re glad we did. It’s reminiscent of the Vietnam Memorial in DC, except that fewer numbers of veterans are covered and much more information is provided about each individual covered here. Many of the plaques memorialize service people with the recollections of their family. This lends a distinctive quality to the memorial.

Loved the scenic view and wall

By Clyde H |

Very nice chance to see those who have served and read their profiles. Even found some that our group knew and served with.

Come to pay respects and to watch the sunrise

By IlyaNJ |

It's a great tribute to local heroes, but also the highest point in La Jolla - so not a bad spot to greet the rising sun. It rises from behind the mountains - we are on the West Coast! - which is not as dramatic as it would be from the sea on the eastern side of the country, but you also get 360-degree views over San Diego and La Jolla.

Great Tribute

By John P |

This area has amazing views of Lajolla back around to San Diego. But the best part is the tribute wall to service men in any and all branches. We happened to be there on a tribute day and it was very moving.

Beautiful memorial

By Debi Y |

This memorial is incredible! So many veterans honored here and done so nicely. Highly recommend you stop in if you can. View from there is amazing even on a cloudy day.

Spectacular views

By Knits |

Great spot always busy.Parking can be difficult. But it is worth circling. The views are amazing,be sure to get lots of pictures.

Wonderful place for peaceful views, and exercise

By leighh5 |

We regularly bike ride from Liberty Station up to Mt. Soledad as a group. It is a good training ride. The Veterans Memorial and cemetery is lovely and peaceful, with a beautiful view back towards downtown San Diego and the airport.

Incredible Memorial and Great Views

This memorial is a somber reminder of the many different wars that brave men and women have lost their lives in to protect our freedoms. There are beautiful views here of San Diego, Coronado, Mission Bay, La Jolla and the ocean.

Beautiful Tribute to our Servicemen and Women

By Cathy G |

Beautiful location at the top of Mt. Soledad, this is a wonderful tribute to the brave men and women who have served our country. You have a 360 degree view of the ocean and mountains surrounding the monument. We went the day after Veterans Day, which was very significant as my father was a vet and died on Veterans Day.

Eyeopening experience

By 453karinl |

During our stay in La Jolla we dropped by and found this place not only magical by the 360 views but seeing all the people that served and lost their lives was very touching and opened our eyes to what happened long time ago

Impressive

By lucy55newyork |

Beautifully done memorial to our vetrans. I espeially liked that the memorial plaques had pictures of the vetrans, I felt it made it more personal putting a face to the names

Veteran's Recognition

By 8islands |

A great memorial and honorarium to all those who served. Also offers an incredible near panoramic view of San Diego.

Sedate

By JSL |

I didn't even know that Mt. Soledad existed until the bus driver explained where he was taking our tour group. But even he could not explain just how gorgeous the cross is and the view of the valley below. The wall is amazing with the pictures and information of persons who served in our Armed Forces. Just the idea of saving that piece of land, the cross and what it means is astonishing to me. When you visit Mt. Soledad, be sure to read up on it first. I believe you will appreciate the site so much more. We loved the peacefulness also.

Well done memorial to the armed forces and a magnificent view

By FloridaSunDevil |

During our too short visit to San Diego, our hosts took us to see the memorial. Easy to get to with parking. The memorial honors veterans from the revolutionary war to the present time. It also honors those still living. The wall containing photos of the veteran's including medals and other memorabilia is moving. As an aside, the view from the "mountain" is gorgeous. Definitely worth a short visit to honor the fallen.

my dad is on the monument

By mpgnova |

stunning monument and view. Been there many times to visit my Dads site. Would recommend place to anybody, especially military families.

amazing

By dxr777 |

On a clear day you can see for miles in all directions. You can get incredibly views. Interesting monument as well.

A must see places if you’re in San Diego.

By Vernon E |

A must see places if you’re in San Diego. A very unique monument that honors or heroes and participants from the revolutionary war up until today. A great website that helps you find where the plaques are located. I’ll beautiful in fact fantastic view of the whole San Diego area. A nice quiet place for reflection.

Amazing views, and volunteers

By dcsac1 |

Cool vantage point to see SD, but the memorial is one of a kind. You need to listen to what the volunteers have to say as they have some great information.

Quite Moving

By BobandJosie |

We went to the Memorial primarily because of the views. Sadly, we did not choose a good day, since the views were limited by low cloud.
However, we did think that the various memorials, to both the great and good but in many instances just your average GI Joe; were heartfelt and clearly meant a lot to the families concerned.

Peaceful Memorial

By Sue A |

Beautiful area, lovely and peaceful memorial for all those who have served our country. Well maintained. The views of the surrounding area was fantastic as well. Plentiful parking and handicap accessible.

A Must Visit. Give Yourself Extra Time.

By DoCo Tommy |

What a beautiful monument. I felt so thankful and greatful as I walked around learning a little about the brave men and women that served our great country. The space is beautiful, overlooking Southern California. The monument is super respectful to all honored there. A must visit

The best SD view

By Mohammad Qutishat |

I highly recommend this hidden gem, located on top of a hill, it oversees San Diego making it the best Panoramic views over SD and the ocean.

A sacred Place

By Tourist828101 |

Excellent location to honor America's heroes. This is on top of a high mountain. Wonderful view of La Jolla. Gives one a chance to say thanks to those that made America great.

California at its best

By BoyMom22 |

We just happened to find this spot and I’m so glad we did. The scenery from this high point was spectacular. And the monument seemed to be not just to those fallen in the line of duty, but a tribute to those who survived through their tour. Would highly recommend a trip for all ages.

Magnificent memorial

By bewtrip |

We were amazed by the sheer beauty of this monument and its incomparable locale. Very touching and beautiful.

Very nice

By TexasTravelertx |

This is a very nice and quiet area to visit in the La Jolla area. It's worth a quick visit, makes for great pictures, and some time to read the Memorials.

A must see for anyone interested in history

By mikeS7619 |

Definitely visit if you want to see the history of the veterans from the area. The amazing views of the surrounding area are also worth the visit.

Top of the World View

By tomstep |

From Mt. Soledad you can just about see all of San Diego! A short drive up from downtown La Jolla. Although for the runners or cyclists is is a uphill workout as there are not too many hills in SD.

Scenic Point of Interest

By bevans130 |

Take the time to drive up to see the Veterans Memorial... you will not be disappointed in the view in every driection

First time

By SJH |

My dad, being a Marine Vietnam veteran, I had to visit here....it's FREE. Great views. Easy walk up; I did not walk any trails.

One of my Zen spots

By Jenni_in_SanDiego |

Do yourself a favor and visit the cross at Mount Soledad when the full moon is rising and the Sun is setting over the Pacific Ocean. It's ethereal! It's also fabulous when there's snow on the mountain peaks to the north- you have views of the ocean to your left and mountains to the north is quite breathtaking. You get 360 degree views from up here and there's no other place quite like it anywhere in San Diego. Been coming here for years and it's always one of my favorite go-to spots when I need to sit on a bench and meditate. The cross has been controversial for years but I believe they finally found a solution and it's here to stay. The plaques at the base are those of cherished veterans who have served our country. Highly recommend visiting Mount Soledad cross.

Great view over San Diego

By DennisMoe |

Always my first visit when I'm in San Diego. From there you have a unique panoramic view of the city and can also learn a little about the military history.

Parking is limited, you might have to take a few laps to find one. ATTENTION: The most beautiful photos are certainly taken off the beaten track, on the "cliffs", but we discovered a rattlesnake in the bushes during our visit. Therefore, I would advise not to go too far into the thicket or bushes.

Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial

By Katie H |

This memorial includes all the wars. There are many stories to read - it is nicely done. The views from the memorial are also amazing.

We could see all the way to the Coronado Bridge, and beyond. EVEN LA!!!

By Bryan And G |

We decided to visit La Jolla, this sunny Sunday afternoon!!! We made our first stop, Mt Soledad.

We were concerned that there would not be enough parking, given one of us is disabled.
Fortunately, there was lots of parking, including disabled parking!!!

It was a brisk day, and somewhat crowded; but not that crowded!!! It was so clear that you could see all of the way to the Coronado Bridge, and Beyond.

EVEN LA!!!

Very Good Visit

By David C |

It was a good memorial and made feel and understand what they were attempting to do and show.. I was impressed

Great Tribute to Veterans with a beautiful View

By X1487QMcarole |

Many tiles on the walls to tell a piece of history. On a clear day their is lots of beauty. The cross is very powerful, which you can see from the highway. Worth stopping and taking it on in.

A nice place for a quick visit to honor our veterans.

By Stephanie C |

A nice place for a quick visit with great views. If you have a friend or loved one that is honored here, you would definitely want to carve out more time. Or if you just enjoy reading about veteran's experiences from the past. The memorials are very tasteful and a wonderful way to honor our vets.

powerful

By Monica C |

there is a silent reverent memorial to consider and remember so many who gave so much. so glad we made this stop

Sacred place to visit on Veteran's Day

By Cm K |

American flags lining the lanes to the cross; yellow roses strategically placed, a view of the valley and city on a clear blue day, solemnity lined the avenue for those who gave all and to whom we owe

Beautiful and fitting memorial to our military

By RalphM33 |

I had heard of this memorial but had not been there so on this trip we made it a point to go. The view from the top where the memorial sits is awesome. Then, when you see what they have done to create and maintain it in pristine condition is wonderful. I am a veteran and took my time to really look at all the plaques and individual memorials that have been placed on the wall. To my surprise I came across a memorial plaque for Commander Bill Albers, one of the pilots I served with during Vietnam. Seeing it really brought it home as to what we owe our vets. It is a must-see and please take the time to read some of the stories on the plaques.

Incredible Tribute

By Marines49 |

Breathtaking views, emotional, incredible monument that is a must do if you’re in SoCal! So glad I finally made the trek.

Beautiful yet solemn

By Stephanie P |

Mt Soledad offers amazing views of San Diego. But on top of that, the monument in itself is very impressive and it's so poignant to see the history of all these men and women that are recognized on the monument. You feel very serene up there.

A Landmark with a 360• view

By Daikolle |

When in La Jolla, San Diego this is a must do. It is a nice place to go and has a 360• view of La Jolla.

Panoramic views

By ibDonnaI |

This is a must see. The views are amazing. Reading all the names and seeing what war's our soldiers served in was pretty cool. No much walking either. Parking right at the top.

Amazing views

By Susan sprtizmann |

My 3 friends and I rented bikes and took a scenic route to the top of Mt. Soledad. The view is breathtaking. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting San Diego.

Serene Memorial

By Prem Rao |

You get to Mt Soledad after a longish drive from San Diego but it is well worth the visit. There are two draws to this serene memorial. One is the location of the memorial built atop a hill in memory of members of the US Armed Forces who died in the line of duty in wars fought thousands of miles away. You can feel the solemnity of the place as soon as you get there. the second, is the scenic beauty. For miles on end, you can see the ocean and the beaches. This in itself makes the visit memorable. Overall, highly recommended.

Amazing views

By kagardner |

A great memorial to those who have served and such amazing views in all directions. Many photo opportunities here.

If you have time...a MUST visit!

By klablessed |

The view and beauty of this area is beautiful! Worth the drive, parking, and sights. We are San Diegans and we visit this area at least once a month.

Change the cross

By Kitty272727 |

The view is a 360 degree panorama that is breathtaking. The memorial plaques to military personnel are touching because not only fallen soldiers are remembered but also men and WOMEN who served many years or their entire lives in the military.
Why did they put up the huge cross? It changes the whole mood and meaning of this beautiful memorial.

Fantastic views of the area

By tmk010 |

While I do not care to much about the Memorial, I always love coming here because of the fantastic 360 o views. No better place in the entire county to get such an impression of the overall area.

Incredible

By PDRtravelbug |

Incredible view and so close to La Jolla. It only takes about 15 to 20 min to drive up and the view is very rewarding.

Amazing place

By JohnnySox |

At Mt Soledad you have both a moving memorial with photos of all of the many brave military people who served our country so well in times of war, and you will be treated to a stunning 360 panorama of the surrounding areas. You should try to find time for a stop here while visiting San Diego.

Must see Memorial

By Theresa G |

This an easy drive from town and the view is spectacular, everyone should make time for this short trip.

Great memorial to our veterans

By Celine315 |

This memorial offers a great view over the city, and shares hundreds (if not thousands) of stories of veterans who have served our country with plaques and pictures on several walls circling the cross.

Worth a Visit

By NICKATREST |

Our last day in San Diego before our flight we decided to check out the Mt Soledad Veterans Memorial. Quite a winding road to get there but you are rewarded with a great view of the area. Also quite a nice monument, and very well maintained, there was a volunteer cleaning off all the pictures of the vets and he said someone does that every day, very classy.

Best view in town!!

By Mary H |

My brother in law suggested this place. Not only was it wonderful to see all the service members on the walls at this memorial, the view was amazing! We will definitely be going back next time we're in San Diego!!

Always remember the troops that have fought for America. After you show your respects spend your time enjoying the view of most of San Diego from top' the hill. From the coast to I think the outskirts of La Jolla you can see the city life bustle and the wind in the trees rustle.

educational and enjoyable.

By garyjaustin |

a great monument to those who have served and interesting to those who care. honerable americans and noted personalities are of interest to me at least.

Memorial with an amazing view of San Diego

By 10Orchard |

Read about this memorial on line and found it was only 2 miles away! We could not find any signposts to it from central La Jolla, but if you follow Mt Soledad road you will get there. The plaques and their narratives are personal to the individuals which I found very moving. On a clear day, you get an amazing 360 degree view of San Diego. Parking is limited and there are no restrooms (that I could find).

Amazing Views

By Andrew Fogliato |

AMAZING View! Highly recommend.

Got dropped off with a bike and then ended up riding down from here to La Jolla and it was amazing. Get here if you can, bring a camera.

Excellent View of La Jolla and beyond

Great Veterans Memorial and worth the time to see - and they say on a clear day you can see as far as Mexico. You really get a beautiful view of La Jolla's coastal beaches.

View-tiful

By JenRed2014 |

Well, the views are breathtaking from the top of Mt. Soledad! The monument is very well done and up-kept. There are so many veterans who are honored and it’s a beautiful memorial. From the memorial you can see downtown San Diego, Mexico, and more!

Emotional and beautfiul

I loved that there were veterans there to talk to and share their stories. It also provides you with a spectacular view of the city. Worth honoring those who gave so much for all of us.

Beautiful View of La Jolla

By jtlerman |

Took an E-bike up to the top of Mt. Soledad. If you're going to bike up to the top, definitely use the E bike. Used to be a Korean War Memorial and now it's any war memorial. Absolutely worth the trip to see the view

A favorite

By seethingsdifferently |

Wonderful spot with a broad vista of San Diego. Always a nice breeze. It's a terrific spot to bring friends or just go on your own to contemplate life.

View to remember!

By DKHmo |

outstanding tribute to the Veterans, amazing view, we took the trolley from San Diego Bay up to the Memorial

Breathtaking view

By Aswathi C |

360 degree breath taking view from the Pacific ocean to La Jolla to rest of San Diego. From here you get a good idea of San Diego’s geography. Known for the veterans memorial which features a giant cross that has become a symbol of the area. The memorial was built to honor the service of veterans. Also wonderful is the drive towards Mount Soledad, with all the beautiful modern architecture homes in the neighborhood. The life those people must have with this view ever since day, goodness!

Lovely views

By Sohrab K |

The National Memorial gave us a sense security and pride. Beside this the view from Mount Soledad was incredible and unmatched with any other views that we had seen.

Nice view

By goldmann |

Great view from mount Soledad. You can see the whole coslal area on a clear day. Very interesting to walk around ad look on all the plaques of the soldiers.

Simple but inspiring

By Ann R |

The view is amazing but the memorial is worth the trip by itself. Truly a gem. Regular Americans deciding who to be honored, dead or alive. You will be pleased to find some of the people honored on these walls and surprised by who isn’t. And there’s room to nominate your own favorite service man or woman. Go. No charge. Be inspired.

Excellent for viewing city lights at night.Parking is tight.

By VegEcoFriendly |

Excellent night views of the city lights. Not to be missed. Parking is a little tight. Can spend 1-1:30 hours just taking in the city lights at night.

A beautiful memorial to fallen heroes

By gtownjewel |

We have visited Mt. Soledad a few times prior to the visit where a plaque was dedicated to our son and the other three Marines who were killed in a helicopter mishap. No one knew that would be in our future. This time we brought friends who had never seen this memorial.

Mt Soledad has beautiful views of San Diego from all 360 degrees. Some people go to read the plaques, enjoy the breathtaking views or to picnic. It’s a great place where you can relax and just hang out.

A definite great place to visit and we’ll return on every trip to San Diego!

Very moving and beautiful

By MarineAir10 |

This is a lovely memorial to all who sacrificed so much. It doesn’t take a great deal of time but it is well worth a visit.
Highly recommended.

amazing spot

By GatoHP |

Definitely something that can't be missed when visiting San Diego. Great views all the way to TJ and Coronado islands (including downtown and Point Loma), amazing views of north county, and, of course, the Pacific, and the perfect viewpoint of the amazing Scripps Oceanography campus as well as the cliffs along Torrey Pines etc.

Heartfelt Tribute

By Joseph M |

A beautiful short drive of remembrance of our passed Military men and women and Tradition, sadly marred by "haters" and lack of maintenance in recent years.

Great View!

By Patty A |

Great place to see San Diego, relax! Limited parking but that shouldn't stop you. There is no smoking as its an memorial.

Amazing views

By traveler5005 |

Veterans memorial. Worth seeing for that. Large cross in the center in private property. Supposed to be the highest point in SD county. Views from mountains the sea.

Great views.

By MarkT |

Great 360 degree views of the area from the Pacific Ocean to the west to the mountains to the east. Take the time to reflex on the purpose of the memorial and honor our great and brave veterans.

A special place

By MattOz1959 |

A wonderful and moving tribute to those who paid the ultimate price for freedom.

Putting aside all the legal battles fought over the past 20+ years by atheists over the cross, it is a remarkable and fitting tribute to the many sailors, soldiers and airmen who have given their lives in defense of freedom. Spectacular views of the city and ocean await all who come to visit the Veteran';s memorial.

Beautiful Location

By RoadTrippersWA |

A very moving veterans memorial atop Mt. Soledad. Also a 360-degree view of the San Diego area from the ocean to beyond Miramar, and from Oceanside to beyond Tijuana

Great view

By Wendy B |

We enjoyed visiting the memorial. The view of the city and the ocean was beautiful. We took a lot of great pictures.

Amazing view

By Happy and expectations met beyond normal |

Going to the top of the highest hill in the area and visiting this memorial was amazing! I would recommend a brief stop so that you can see the area via Ariel view. The memorial was somber and done in great taste.

Beautiful and special place.

By Terri Defilippi |

This monument is beautiful. It is so nicely maintained. We were lucky enough to speak with a docent who showed us all the well known people on the plaques. The 360 degree views are breathtaking. I highly recommend it.

Outstanding Memorial & Beautiful View

By Ted M |

The Memorial is surrounded by pictures of Veterans that are remembered there. Also there are Veterans there that you can speak to about the Memorial and the wars that they fought in. Great place to take children to learn about what these men did so that we can live in the country that we do. Also the view from up there is spectacular especially at night. Go just before sunset and watch the lights of the city come alive.

A Must See! Amazing Views!

Special place - spectacular view!!

By James C |

A must see if your visiting. Beautiful views of the the west coast and bay are of SD. A great place to recognize the men that have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Beautiful View

By @AlwaysLornaMarie |

Absolutely stunning view. We just moved to the area and were told this was a must do to see what is in our backyard. You need to come see this lookout you will not be disappointed. There were plenty of benches to sit on and a huge grass area. You could totally bring the family here and have a picnic. Ive only seen a couple other lookouts as good as this one and they were in Hawaii and Saint Martin.

So serene..

By Sawedoff |

If you’re hoping for lots of action and things to do, you’re coming to the wrong place! Mt. Soledad is a place to reminisce, and give thanks to all those service men & women who have gone before us. The huge cross overlooks all of La Jolla and San Diego, on the other side. If you go with small children, please encourage them to respect the memorial, and others who are there doing the same. There are a couple of concrete benches available to take a break on, overlooking the ocean. It’s beautiful up there.

Going up the mountain, be careful! There are usually people biking up. So just watch out for bikers and pedestrians. The roads are not wide, and there are homes along the road where people live, and don’t like fast motorists. So take it easy going up and down, and respect those who have made this mountain their home. Other than that, enjoy the views and say a prayer for all the military folks who are honored by Mt. Soledad.

Need to see

By Verlin C |

The views are worth the drive, the memorial is a great tribute to our nations veterans. Watch the traffic on the drive up .. the locals are rude and drive like they are at Indy

The view and the meaning!

By Monica E |

The view is breathtaking and we really enjoyed commemorating our fallen heroes and those who still live. We actually got to meet of the man being celebrated as he was there to see his plaque. What an honor to see him and his family. Beautiful place.

A nicely done monument on a summit that provides fantastic vistas

By DT-PEI |

A nicely done monument to veterans on a summit that provides fantastic views. Could see snow capped Bear Mtn to the NE, Miramar Marine Air Corps Air Station to the east (didn't see Maverick or any of his buddies in action though), San Diego and Coronado to the south. Worth the trip up for the views. No problem getting a parking spot. Very limited toilet facilities. Free Parking.

Stunning views

By Anne M |

Stunning 360 degree views of San Diego and the water. Nice memorial. Immaculately kept grounds. My kids were uncooperative and I was worried they’d trip on the brick steps so we didn’t stay long. Still, worth a quick stop for even young families if in the area.

Great vistas

By Pennie727 |

We walked up here. Not much to do but enjoy the beautiful views. The kids enjoyed it and being able to run around. There were cute little groundhogs popping up!

Fantastic Views

A relatively quick drive from downtown SD. Fantastic views of the Pacific coast north of SD. A good option if you don't have time to drive the Pacific Hwy. Surrounding homes and neighborhoods are breathtaking.

Mt. Soledad Vet Memorial

Incredible 360° view of ocean, beaches north and south, La Jolla, mountains....not to minimize the artfully created memorial itself. Ultimate "kodak" opportunities.

A must see

By John S |

We went there as part of a motor tour of San Diego! Our tour guide had spent many hours there and he gave us a very informative amount of information about the attraction. I would highly recommend this attraction as a "must see" if you are trying to get a feeling for the San Diego area.

Terrific View!

By DJones619 |

A lovely tribute to our Veterans with a panoramic view of the entire San Diego area. Quick trip up the mountain with designated parking.

Impressive

By NormKeith |

Looking for things that are not the normal tourist things we found Mount Soledad & Veterans Memorial. Short drive up a residential area reaching 822 feet above sea level was the memorial. The apex of the memorial is a 27-foot cross. Surrounding the cross on different levels there are plaques honoring U.S servicemen and women who had died during the two world wars and the Korean conflict. Each plaques has a picture of the veteran, the war or wars he or she was in and their rank and awards. As in all cases the city of San Diego was sued for having the cross on public property. After 27 years of court battles (make a long story short) the property was sold to the Mt. Soledad Memorial Association with the proviso that the half-acre parcel be maintained as a veterans memorial in perpetuity. From the memorial you can see a 360 degree view of the.

Nice visit

By Craig L |

Came up here with my cousins. As well as being an interesting point of reference you are given 360 degree views of the San Diego area. Well worth a visit up here and the views offered on way back down are worth it also

Something to see

By Ronda M |

I was looking for something free to do in San Diego and this is it. The views are spectacular. And there is plenty of parking. My family is military and we appreciate all those who serve this country but it awe inspiring to put faces to those who have served. If you are in the area, it’s a must see.

Beautiful memorial that overlooks San Diego.

By SprayHawk |

I've been to San Diego dozens of times, but did not know about this gem. It is atop one of the highest peaks in the area, giving you an excellent view of the entire San Diego area. I didn't time it right, but I believe it would be beautiful for sunset viewing. Bring a lite jacket - the wind blows pretty good and could get chilly, especially as the sun goes down.

Best views of the SD area

By GWENDALYN M |

Best view of the San Diego area. Worth the trip up. We brought lunch and sat at the top. Was windy and chilly though, so bring a sweatshirt.

Some construction but it will be worth it.

By Kathryn M |

There is some on-site construction going on but it is to build more walls for more tributes. The views up there are amazing regardless of daytime or night. Beware that the road up is steep with some blind curves and through a residential area.

Amazing View & Amazing Heros' pictures

By Peter R |

Standing on top of Mount Soledad, surveying miles and miles of ocean and land, all the way to Mexico is (to use a Californian term) awesome. We were regaled with the history and stories of conflict by one of the veterans guarding and tending the memorial. It felt a little like when Indiana Jones meets the guardian of the Holy Grail :) A must see when visiting SD.

Top of San Diego

By divik |

Its an amazing place for feeling proud about the martyrs and their contributions to the nation. It has a very nice view for San diego and Ocean, a must go for spending around 1 hr on a clear sky evening. The coastline view is panoramic, do remember to bring some water , snacks if you come with children as this place doesn’t has any options. You may be lucky to find an ice cream truck or a snacks truck.

Poignant

By Kewstokie |

Dignified place of remembrance of those who answered the call of their country. We spent more time there than we intended, absorbed by the individual stories covering all the 20thC conflicts. Photographs of the combatants bring the stories to life.
The location gives outstanding views on a clear day, and adds to the touching tributes. Recommended.

Easy drive for an amazing view at night

By Alison Hendriks |

We drove up after dinner while staying at La Jolla. It worth the short drive. You can view 360 degrees. All the lights were around 180 degrees on one side. You are surrounded by million dollar sparking lights view. I used the I phone flash night since the ground was a little dark.

Lovely viewpoint overlooking San Diego.

By Stephen P |

This is a great spot to overlook the whole San Diego area. It's especially wonderful at sunset. The low angle light makes for great photographs. It's a great place to wander around 360 degrees to see what you can see.

Impressive Memorial and View

By jmpfamily |

This memorial offers a beautiful view of the area along with touching tributes to veterans. There are famous people and everyday people on the wall. We found ourselves reading the stories and searching for famous people as well. We could've spent more time there, but wanted to see other sights during our short visit.

I like the fact that anyone can honor any veteran by making a donation. This gives us a way to honor veterans that otherwise may be forgotten. Many have pictures included, which makes the stories come alive.

You can put different religious symbols on if you choose on the plaque. I saw many tributes with Jewish symbols, for example. I didn't feel that the religious symbols made the site less meaningful of a tribute to those veterans who served our country.

360 view of San Diego area!!

By dave m |

A powerful tribute to Veterans ... and an amazing place to see it all ... views in every direction ... nice drive up ... well worth the extra time ...

Day trip

By Brian J |

I’ve visited this attraction with several other veterans. This is a moving exhibit that showcases veterans of all ages and all services. The views are amazing from the site

Amazing views

By Charlotte F |

A heartwarming memorial for those who gave their lives. Slightly controversial due to the Cross though.
Stunning views, especially around sunset. Lots of parking available

A Beautiful Humbling Experience

By Jeanette M |

I have been there several times in the past and it always amazes and humbles me. All of these wonderful men and women that served our country immortalized on the walls. Bob that volunteers there is a wealth of information and so helpful when you are looking for a particular individual. There were also 2 other students there to help answer questions. I just love the whole experience there and the view is breathtaking.

Wonderful Views

By rodjk37 |

The drive up is curvy but not scary. Lots of pretty houses on the way. Once you are at the top there's plenty of parking - do park and take your time checking out the wonderful view is almost all directions. The memorial is very touching.

Amazing 360 degree view

By db7477 |

We visited the monument after spending the day in La Jolla Cove. The drive climbs and twists through the residential neighborhood. The views at the top are spectacular in all directions. The cross and memorial are well worth a visit. Families of veterans have submitted some very moving tributes to their loved ones.

Appropriate for their service

By Les J |

Certainly offers a great view of the SD area, but for us, it means so much more. Our daughter-in-law is currently deployed. Our son, after 2 tours in Afghanistan, is no longer in the military, but still ‘associated’. Both these kids, veterans they are, had friends who gave their lives. And then there’s the cross. My religious beliefs seem to of late be the only ones that aren’t tolerated. Glad efforts to remove the cross were unsuccessful.

Beautiful

By Kelly Walker |

A beautiful memorial with a stunning panoramic view! We saw bunnies, squirrels and other wildlife while there.

Views of the area

By jim g |

Great panoramic view of San Diego places of interest. Take time to look at the individual memorial wall pictures.

360 Degree Views

By Rick D |

Very cool monument to fallen soldiers. High atop a hill with 360 degree sight lines of downtown SF, LaJolla and up the coast past Torrey Pines.
Not a must see because it’s a bit of a trek off the main roads but on a sunny day you’ll get no better views. And it’s never a bad idea to stop and reflect, give a prayer and a silent thank you to those that fought and died so that we can live as freely as we do.

Vet of honor

By Heather Ayala |

With being in San Diego for Labor Day weekend coming here Is so pretty and to honor our vets. The view you can see there is so peaceful

Highly recommend

By Trish Masena |

Absolutely awesome memorial in a perfectly peaceful location with stunning 360 degree views. We spent almost an hour there looking at all the memorial plaques which included photos of veterans living and deceased who have served in any branch of service since the Revolutionary War. Teens enjoyed it too.

Birds eye view of San Diego and the Pacific

By Joe M |

Always a point of attraction for our visiting family and friends. Veterans monument is a great place to honor our local hero. Can see the mountains and the ocean from a single point. Outstanding view both during the day and at night.

Its another once in a lifetime place to visit to see how veterans of all time are memorialized.

By leo j |

The views from the top are fantastic. You can see miles in every direction. The pictures in black and white photo etched on tiles are unique and they are all personal to the individual. Who thought you could see a picture of Sergeant York on such a memorial along with thousands of others.

Fantastic views and sobering monument

By NedSouthampton |

Worth a trip for the views alone, but enjoy the memorial, made all the more sobering but having pictures of the veterans on their plaques. Search out the famous names, Bob Hope, Audie Murphy etc.

Top of hill view

By Connie L |

This memorial to our veterans is one of the not to be missed side trips in San Diego. It is at the top of La Jolla Scenic Drive South. There are memorials to many veterans often with pictures and where and when they served. It is very attractively done. The view from there if gorgeous.

Breathtaking!

By Hbsw19 |

Driving up the mountain to this site is the build up to an incredible 360 degree view of San Diego. The war memorial and white cross hit deep in one's heart as you scan the faces of those enshrined in the fabulous wall plaques. The Memorial really sparks an emotion deep into one's heart coupled with the breathtaking views make this one of my favorite sites in San Diego and it's free!

West coast drive

By Fuaddxb |

The memorial there is where families and friends of veterans place photographs and the names of the fallen or those who have served and are no longer with us.

It is also one of the highest points in La Jolla with 360 Panoramic views of San Diego. Parking is no issue and locals jog up there.

It is a 10 minute drive from la jolla cove best done by car, as it is a climb on the roads.

Beautiful views, however do the visit during daylight hours or around sunset, as once it becomes dark city lights are minimal.

Worth visiting

By gerundorchid |

Free. It’s located on top of a hill. There’s a grassy knoll next to the monument with a big ocean view. The memorial is beautiful. There’s an architectural pathway with plaques all over the walls. Each plaque, pretty much, has a picture and small bio of a veteran. It’s quite moving. There’s free parking on site, no restrooms that I saw, light walking, lots of steps, beautiful view.

360 view and nice drive

By Hailey Cox |

Beautiful 360 view with a beautiful drive to the top and Back down! Free parking. Happy we made a stop.

Beautiful tribute with 360 degree view

By dolly2805 |

This is such a beautiful tribute to the men and women, living and not, who have served our country in every War- Civil War, WWI, WWII, Gulf War, Korea, Vietnam.
There is a 360 degree view, and you can even see Mexico.

Excellent memorial

By jsmooney |

This memorial is quiet and peaceful. You can see for miles around. Looking north, you see Torrey Pines golf course (green). Looking northeast, you see Mirimar (think: Top Gun). Looking south, you see San Diego downtown. Hint: park at the bottom of the hill so that you can walk up and take in the views. There is also parking up to around the memorial.

Really special place

By Brenda S |

This was really neat to see. We had heard about it so wanted to see it. The views are so special and seeing all the plaques of veterans was so neat. The place was clean and people really enjoying it.

Stunning View & Memorial

By ltbd1 |

I have been to San Diego several times over the years. I had never been to Mt Soledad. WOW, sure wish I had come here before. The highest point in the area, what a view. The War Memorial is on of the best I have seen anywhere.

Highly Recommend

Wort the visit

It’s a great view all around San Diego and a wonderful tribute to military heroes. Beautiful vistas. Went with husband and 19 year old, we all enjoyed.

Amazing views and beautiful memorial

By WillTheTraveler17 |

The views here are amazing and hard to believe. It's not as grand as the Grand Canyon, but the views they have are on par with it. HAVE TO SEE if you're anywhere near!

It will move you.

By RoyceThedog |

Beautiful view, heartfelt sentiments, enough parking, and good maintenance make this a meaningful adventure.

Great place to pass an hour

By Trey K |

Went here with another family and a total of 6 young kids. It is a great place to kill an hour. The views are excellent. The memorial is well done. The kids walked the monument and had fun walking around the grounds. There isn't much to do other than to take in the views and run around.

A must see

By maddiedean17588 |

This place will pull at your heart. A very well kept place. Many things to read from family members of love ones.

San Diego first timer!

By easkins3 |

First stop was Mr. Soledad Veterans Memorial. Really peaceful and the views are incredible. Many, many visitors here with us...

Interesting monument to San Diego area veterans.

By Dick P |

This monument is atop a mountain inside San Diego. The monument consists of a large cross surrounded by plaques dedicated to San Diego area veterans of all ranks.

Gorgeous views

By Margie N |

this was first time I visited, I was moved by the Memorial and the fantastic views. So happy this was included in our tour

What a view!

By GlobalGypsy_13 |

What a view of the bay and San Diego you have from Mt.Soledad! There's ample parking and the views are spectacular. Enjoy!

My Soledad

By Gail W |

If you go to San Diego you must either drive up there to do a tour it is well worth seeing and the view is amazing.

Beautiful solemn dedication to our veterans!

By KaimukiGirl24 |

Beautiful setting for this monument honoring our veterans. The granite enclosed pictures of veterans that surround this monument remind us of those who have served to preserve the freedoms we tend to take advantage of. The views of San Diego are spectacular from this site and a nice respite from all the traffic viewed from above. Definitely worth visiting when you can.

Great view.

By Roger F |

Excellent place to get a glimpse of San Diego and the surrounding area. Be careful at the entrance its hard to see cars coming around the curve. If there is a crowd just wait a few minutes. people come and go regularly.

on the San Diego City tour

By chips57 |

We took a city tour of San Diego area and one stop was at this beautiful Memorial, way up on a hill overlooking the city and the ocean. The walls are lined with beautiful glass pictures of veterans, a lot of famous ones, too like James Stewart, Dwight Eisenhower, General Patton, Harry Truman and many more. It's beautifully done and a great tribute plus the view is awesome !

An unexpected stop

By Sunbirds |

The history how this site was purchased by a veteran organization to save the cross and honor veterans was impressive.

Wow

By RICARDO D |

This is a great place to visit if you want a panoramic view of San Diego. It is a breathtaking view. This may not be as fun if you are afraid of heights. There is an uphill drive and limited fencing. Taking the time to view all of the memorials is a must.

Inspiring view and memorial

By Sudie S |

Great place for 180 degree view and cool memorial bricks dedicated to veterans. Honors all branches of military.

Inspiring

By Michael W |

This is a pretty cool place to visit. Firstly, amazing views from la Jolla and beyond in the north all the way to Mexico in the south.
Secondly if you have any sense of awe at the amazing military contributions of a vast number of people there are plaques from privates to presidents who have served.

Beautiful scenery

By EmmJoans |

I went here on 10/29/18 and it was an overcast morning. Therefore, I didn’t get the best views. It’s a pretty memorial and the views are amazing. I enjoyed driving up to it and would’ve loved to walk up to it because it would’ve been an intense cardio workout. Parking is very minimal so plan to carpool.

Worthy

By rossm99 |

This memorial honors our veterans and the view is worth the visit. There are many other attractions close to this site.

Great Views, Wonderful Memorial

By mxnbsnswthplsr |

They took their time and did this memorial right. Great photos, great views, very nice. Had no idea this was even here on previous trips to the area. So glad we took the drive up to see it.

Incredible view, very moving memorial

By DHBourke |

The views from all sides are breathtaking. And each plaque tells a story about a veteran. It's very inspiring and worth the trip.
Tip: Just park in the parking lot below. The few spots around the monument are mostly handicap spots and the traffic gets very backed up.

Beautiful 360 degrees view of SD

By Robert H |

If you want to have a spectacular view of SD, this is the place to go. The 360 degree view of the city is great. I would recommend, if you have time, going both early morning to see the sunrise and at night. Drive and drop your family to the site and look for some parking down at the parking site.

A unique memorial that also provides one of the best views in all of San Diego

By Dale M |

Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial is a gem that awaits your discovery. In addition to honoring veterans, living or deceased, from the Revolutionary War to the current war on terrorism, with an image of the veteran, it offers one of the most spectacular views in the entire city. It's easy to find, has reasonable onsite parking and a portable restroom. Because of its height and proximity to the coast, the marine layer can limit your viewing pleasure. However, on clear days it's truly a spectacular place to visit. Weekends can be crowded, while weekdays improve your chances of locating a good parking spot. As with all outdoor activities in San Diego, a hat and sun screen are recommended. Also, a good pair of binoculars will add to your viewing pleasure.

Beautiful monument and views

By usnwalker |

Visited the memorial and everything lived up to expectations. The memorial was breathtaking as were the views.

A BEAUTIFUL AND MOVING MEMORIAL

By Deborah R |

This is a place to for reverence, for appreciating what scores of veterans have sacrificed. Though its not a cemetery, one can stroll among the names of American veterans from many fronts. It's also a San Diego landmark with amazing views of San Diego and La Jolla, all the way to Mexico.

what a gem

By Ian C |

This is an outstanding way to pat homage to all in the armed forces. The way it is presented and those plaques are just in awe.Congrats to those that stood up and now show it to the world.well done.

Highly Recommend

By terrib9591 |

This is a part of the National Park system. A lot of history present regarding the Point Loma light house, National Cemetery, etc. Nice view of the naval base. Lots of opportunity to watch planes, helicopters and ships move around the area.

Great Tribute to our Warriors

By lv2getaway |

My husband's Harley Davidson Group hosts an annual fundraiser ride to wounded warriors based in San Diego. The ride concludes here. It was my first time visiting... so heartfelt.

Don’t miss the view from here

By MCH65 |

Mt Soledad was one of my favorite stops on our 4 day trip to San Diego. The mountain is the highest point around and offers amazing views for miles in all directions. More important than the view was the memorial. This site is a National Veteran Memorial and the monument is ringed with walls covered in black plaques dedicated to individuals who served our country. Unfortunately, a lot of people only saw the view and didn’t take time to read the stories and pay respect to those who have given all to serve our country. Don’t miss this place. It is located a short drive off the freeway and a short distance from anywhere in La Jolla. The sunset from here was awesome.

Stunning views, nice war memorial

By Heather Taylor |

Beautiful 360 views of San Diego. Educational war memorial. Easy to access, clean, parking was easy as well.

worth going for the views alone

By Alison E |

Some people cycle up there!! This is a lovely place to see over San DIego and La Jolla. there is only a portaloo, so toilet breaks may want to be avoided.

Breathtaking views!

By Eve212015 |

Great location for 360 degree views of San Diego. It was so relaxing to sit under the cross and try to identify the beaches and the buildings in the distance. I could sit there for hours just taking in the views of the beach, mountains, downtown. Breathtaking views for sure!

We took a bike tour to this Memorial

By Gayle L |

The bike tour was phenomenal as was the view at the Veterans Memorial. We took time to read the various stories and the names of the memorial. It was quite touching.

A beautiful memorial with some stunning views!

By Nostalgiyeah |

This is an impressive tribute to veterans who seved in the US Armed Forces. It honors people who served in the armed forces, living or deceased in wars spanning from the American Revolutionary War. Around the huge cross, the names of the soldiers are engraved as a salute to their service. I found that design quite a laudatory way to celebrate the lives and service of these folks. There certainly were some famous names like Ronald Reagan and Eisenhower, but a vast majority of the names are probably known only to friends and family. The expansive views of the blue waters of the La Jolla bay and the San Diego skyline are absolutely beautiful! There are not a lot of parking spots at the top, but the parking is free. There are a few benches and a nice, clean grassy area if folks might be interested to stay longer than a few minutes.

Worth the trip

By mary d |

Went on the trolley tour to La Jolla and this was a stop we knew nothing of it but it is a beautiful spot wonderful memorial, lovingly cared for I would recommend this to friends

Worth the visit

By TamCos6 |

We went to see this memorial on the recommendation of a vet that we ran into. It was beautiful! The view was spectacular, and it was amazing seeing and reading the plaques that have been put in place.

Stunning view of city and ocean

By sames2018 |

Enjoy a spectacular view of San Diego and the ocean. Terrific memorial honoring veterans from the Revolutionary War to present.

Amazing Views. Somber Memorial.

By J S |

If the day is clear don't miss this viewpoint in San Diego. Especially near sunset. If the day is not clear the veterans memorial is still worth a visit. Not fun, but worth remembering those who guard our freedom.

Only Place to watch Fireworks

By Curtis Sheehan |

Every Fourth of July my Dad would take my sister and I up to Mt. Soledad to watch fireworks. It is the best spot because you get a 360 degree view of the city and can see fireworks from everywhere. Get there early to grab a spot.

Somber site but worth the visit

By SueAx57 |

The site is very interesting with photos of all the veterans who passed away during all the wars. There are benches to sit overlooking the valley. There is a parking lot and there is an accessible path to be able to view everything.

Amazing views and beautiful tribute

By 484MeganG |

This was not a place originally on our list of things to do on our vacation as we never knew of it. We found out about it by recommendation of a server. We went up that evening. The weather was cold and cloudy so not good for viewing a long distance, BUT it was beautiful and one of my kids favorite things we did in San Diego. It was peaceful and felt like we were on top of the world. We can't wait to go back when it's warm and clear!

Great Historical Memorial

By gregm75460 |

The views of La Jolla and San Diego are beautiful from this attraction. The memorial is easy to find. You don't need much time at the site...15 minutes is enough to pay your respects and to capture some spectacular pictures of the are below.

Mt Soledad National Memorial Veterans Park is a great place to visit

By Stclair1958 |

My Soledad National Memorial Park is a great place to visit, Awesome Park great view easy access very inspirational definitely a must see when you’re in San Diego

Great location

By Ted K |

This was in Pacific Beach. Great place to go Ice blocking back in the day. This was before they built the monument for the military servicemen.

Incredible Views and Fitting Tributes

By Colin Archibald |

It would be hard to find a more spectacular view in San Diego. From the top of Mt. Soleday you can see down the Coast to the South all the way to Mexico, North to Oceanside and on a clear day can see San Clemente Island and Catalina. Looking East you see the Sprawling San Diego area. To the west is the Pacific. The monument has expanded and continues to do so. There are plaques honoring veterans that have served our country and there are forms available to add someone to the memorial if you have a loved one that you would like to have honored here. Regardless or service or of religion (even though the centerpiece is a cross) Veterans are honored here. The plaques even have a picture of the member being honored.

Impressive

By Jonsey453 |

Amazing views of ocean , San Diego and Mexico in the distance. Plenty of parking .
Volunteers tending the Monument informative and helpful, well worth a visit

Best View of San Diego!

By Gretchen L |

I finally made it to the top, this is the most breathtaking view of all of San Diego. On a clear day you can see across the Pacific all the way to the Mountains. This is a live 360 View that won't disappoint. It was also amazing to read the wall of Veterans, featured is the memory of Bob Hope and past Presidents. You will leave grateful for your freedom and grateful for the view.

Great view

By steinroa |

A beutiful view of San Diego and surroundings. It gets crowded up there in the summer, and not a lot of avalible parking.

Our GPS brought us here for our delight!

By Sylvia DrSoul Fernandez |

We were driving back to Carlos’ uncle home When to our surprise the GPS took us through another route and we “bumped” into this lovely place with amazing views of the city. It’s too sad places like this are built to commemorate people passing away instead of in celebration of Life! Anyhow, it has lots of Free parking, great views and even some benches to sit and enjoy the view for a while! some people even bike here! There were couples, families and single people walking about! Come and enjoy! We always #planforamiracle and they Always Happen!! Follow me and learn about more great places in San Diego, Home in Puerto Rico, Thailand, Hong Kong and many more places I’ve visited!!

Great place... This is a beautiful and touching Memorial.
To see the faces and read their stories was amazing I wish I had the time to read each and every one of them.

Panaromic view!

It was ne of our stops during the old trolley tour, we were dropped off for 20 minutes.
The view is astonishing since it is the highest point in San Diego.
It is a free attraction.

A must do when in San Diego

By Dan Engstrom |

Magnificent view all the way into Mexico in good weather. Easy to drive up to and easy to park. Bring your own picnic and stay for the view.

You need to see this!

By BJ Wood |

Not well known, but a must-see; try it on an e-bike! At the top you can see from Mexico to just south of Los Angeles - so impressive. Even though I lived in Del Mar as a kid, I'd never visited this memorial until now. Just stunning and humbling all at the same time. So many heartfelt thanks to all of our Veterans!

Incredible 360 degree views

By penelopeonetwo |

After living in the San Diego area for more than 20 years, we finally took ourselves the Mt. Soledad. WOW!!! The view was incredible. A definite "must see" on a clear day.

Enjoyable and Magical

By McClean Photography |

The last time I went there, I got to film a proposal! I also have taken a lot of shots from Mount Soledad as I am a professional photographer. I highly recommend going!

Beautiful veteran’s memorial

By Bitsycorona |

Lovely memorial in a magnificent setting. Very interesting to see the photos of those who served. You won’t regret stopping here.

Astonishing view on San Diego area

By Biesjt |

Visited twice during our stay. As impressive in the rain as under a bleu sky. The moment breaths the deep respect for their veterans, including the stars and stripes

Remarkable Tribute

By liknee |

This monument is a great tribute to those who have served the country. The plaques with pictures and short stories help you to connect with the brave souls who fought for our freedom. I felt both humbled and proud.

Mt Soledad

By Sheryl C |

Incredible360 views. Apparently with no sea mist you can almost see LA. The Top Gun Airfield looks impressive, the Bay Area stunning and the border to Mexico is very close.
Obviously a location where even international tourists feel respect for those who lost their life in war.
