Great beach town!

By ElleElle888 |

Loved our stay here. Plenty of different restaurants and shops within walking distance. Highly recommend staying on the water. Family friendly. A lot of fun Maine landmarks within driving distance.

Similar to Ocean City MD - but colder water

By Jo-Ann V |

For those from Maryland- this beach was like going to Ocean City MD- lots of families.the pier is ok- but no big deal. beach was nice. Water cold!

A Classic

By François Bod |

Each summer, I go to Old Orchard Beach l. It is a family tradition. The water is rarely very warm, but never too cold. The cottages have an unique charm. Don't forget to bring your sunscreen!

Enjoyed every bit of OOB

By KCRidihalgh |

Visited with 12- and 9-year old for a few days. Stayed at a motel right on the beach. It was all we expected- sandy, wet, hit, noisy and a bit tacky - in a word- perfect! We could walk to the pier and the carnival, shops, etc. Good variety of restaurants.

We stayed at the Normandie Inn, about 10 minutes walk from the Pier. While the beach was crowded, it wasn’t hard to find a spot and play all day. The beach was spotless, sandy, and close to amenities. It’s a pretty shallow area so even at high tide it seems safe for swimming with good waves for boogie boarding. Low tide revealed extensive sand bars while keeping the waves rolling. Great digging and building type sand. Just right for the kids.

The prices at the carnival and arcade were reasonable. While not huge, the carnival has a good variety of rides for little tykes and big thrill-seekers. You can either buy a bracelet for unlimited rides or individual tickets. We figured if we did at least 6 rides, the bracelets were a good deal- the kids went on 15 rides in about 1 1/2 hours. We were there for the Thursday night fireworks, so town was a bit more crowded than other nights.

There are a lot of take out restaurants so we did a “food court” dinner- kids had Subway, I had lobster, and dad had fried fish. We grabbed a picnic table at one of the establishments.

Can’t really think of if a downside except maybe the price, but you can shop around. Our hotel had an indoor pool so there was an option if it got too hot or rainy, but if you don’t have that, there’s not too much else to do.

OOB SHOCKER

By Bbs beach buddies 🐠🐠 |

We arrived in OOB late Thursday and was blown away! Our girls trip consisted of Martha’s Vineyard Block Island. Portland Maine and Boston. But the brightest spot was OOB. We stayed 2 night on the coast and loved every minute and will return !

Cute area

By Shalimar M |

Cute beach/pier/amusement park area. Lots of food vendors and sundries shops. I was there in the off season and I definitely want to go back.

2nd time around

By Shadera L |

My bestfriend and I decided to go here because she heard good things and I have been here in 2014 and loved. This time around I had the same experience as the first time the beach was clean there was lots of things to do and parking prices were good.

The Beach is Beautiful

By scott s |

The beach stretches for miles, is walkable even at high tide, and has plenty to do on the walk. Restaurants, bars, and arcades for the kids are all within walking distance.

Very Impressive

By FellowTraveler777811 |

Beautiful clean sand beach. The weather was hot and sunny the day I went. Plenty of people on the beach. Lots of rides and things to do for the kids. Lots of places to eat and they have the yummiest ice-cream. The Pier is fantastic. Well worth the visit.

Beautiful beach with a great view on the ocean

By Benjamin |

Old Orchard Beach was one of the milestones of our road trip to Maine.

As apparently typical from the summer time, the beach was super-crowded (and amazingly clean for such a crowd). We managed to find a free spot next to the sea (a bit far from the pier) for a couple of hours. We then enjoyed a relaxing time, with a great view on the sea and the waves, whilst the kids were playing in the sand.

The only negative point is definitely the parking fee. It is quite expensive for only a few hours on site.

One block not worth the hype

By Miranda G |

We caught it after peak season in end of September. The pier, playland, and walkway were closed for the season. No food options other than fair food. Was disappointed.

Friendship Inn is our place every year!

By Kalrjp5 |

We come back here every year. We love the hotel: it’s clean, easy, on the beach. Most families stay here which is awesome. The pool is great, the beach is unreal. The room is great with a pull out couch for our 12 yr old son. We always go to Sheila’s across the street for EVERYTHING. Coffee, breakfast, lunch, snacks. The trolley comes every hour to go to Pine Point or the Pier. We love this hotel and have already booked for next August. Thank you!

Awesome family day

By Taryn C |

Awesome. Reminds me of the many lost gems with the rides / amusement park / arcades on the beach. Good for a day trip or over night. It is not a honeymoon spot but great for the family. We go every year. Not sure why people have this a bad review.

Great time

By biggamemike |

Great food and great fun i would definitely come back to this place. My daughter loved the amusement park and my wife and i loved the restaurants and bars. Its fun for the whole family

Good for families with kids

By Sara T |

I came here with my husband. We had a nice walk along the beach. It was just so crowded. I had been as a child, and as with all childhood memories, did not meet my expectations. My memories are not of a crowded chaotic beach. I do think the beach is fun for families with young children.

Vacation

By Warren S |

Great family destination for all ages. Unbelievable restaurants in a small town atmosphere where everyone is friendly.

Clean and Safe

By 1BamaBacker |

Just what you want a beach to be, clean and safe. Plenty of things to do and good restaurants. Overall a great time. Not crowded with high rise condos and hotels. Loved how it is like the way beaches were when I was a kid.

Maine’s Popular Place for Fun in the Sun

By MaineMountainOwl |

This family-friendly, six-mile (9.6 km) long beach stretches from Pine Point to Camp Ellis. Its famous pier, arcades, shops, and motels attract throngs of visitors, as does its broad, clean, sandy beach. Parking curbside and in paid lots is plentiful. Plan to pay $5 to $15 daily. Signs warn against smoking or drinking alcohol on the beach; police strictly enforce these ad other laws and local ordinances. Dining places focus on pizza, fries, and seafood. All businesses have pandemic protocols in place. The beach is a half-hour Interstate drive south from Portland. It also has its own Amtrak station. Visitors wade or swim in the clean, cold ocean from May to October. It has no lifeguards. Public restrooms are available off the beach. Old Orchard Beach is a fun place to visit in any season. I enjoyed my spring day at the beach; I disliked nothing I found here.

plenty of great places to visit and to eat

By DJBtrip |

we could walk to everything from the Paradise rv park it was a great stay. We would highly recommend it to all. db

Great atmosphere

By Tom G |

The Pier Restaurant opened for the new season ., great food (chicken Philly) and great service with awesome view. Trip advisor doesn’t show as restaurant option

Rude and overpriced

By Gina H |

Clean it up and learn some manners. I have travelled many places both domestically and abroad. The people I encountered here were the rudest I’ve ever met, both the tourists and the shopkeepers who hate them. The beach is nice enough, but there are other nice beaches, and since that’s the only thing here of interest, why bother? There is a little carnival area that kids would like, so if you’re into paying overinflated prices for tiny lodgings, it’s probably a fun family destination. I’ve seen mixed reviews from the family visitors, too.

GREAT PLACE

By Joe V |

Great place had a lot of fun and many things to do. People are very friendly.. The prices were good also. Love The Pier Fries..

Go at low tide

By Beth K |

No crowds when we were there, even though it was mid-August. Great photo ops under the pier, so be sure to get some pics there!

Only a few seashells, so nothing exciting for collectors, but low tide gives plenty of sand to walk on.

Nice beach

By Vicki1137 |

We took ourc18m old twins up for the 1st time. They had a blast. Beaches where clean. The boys had alot of fun. We will go back again

Fantastic

By MEKACA |

We planned a last minute vacation to OOB per our granddaughters request; who wanted to go to the ocean. We stayed at a nearby motel, and literally walked to the beach in under 1 minute. The beach is very crowded this time of year, especially on the weekends. If you want to sit fairly near the waster, arrive early, and set up. You can leave your stuff there, unattended, and no one will touch it. The family next to us, left for 2-3 hours even. The beach is clean. Lifeguards on duty. Low tide in the morning was so fun for our granddaughter. We spent hours out there, and when we left to get her out of the sun for a bit, she was so shocked to see how far the ride had come in. This is a great trip, on short notice to the ocean. She didn’t find the water too chilly, but was in a bit of a huff when she got unexpectedly hit by a wave. She was telling people the water slapped her in the face. It’s all about creating memories folks, and OOB, Maine is a great place to be. 💕

Needs major revitalization!

By BrotherDerrick |

We come to OOB every year i September but we always stay a little over a mile down the opposite end of the beach which is very nice! OBB Pier area of the beach is a dump. It has limited parking, over crowded, filthy over priced mess. Even the public rest rooms have a fee to use them. We ate at the same restaurant that we ate at years ago on the pier and I was uncomfortable eating the food there. It looked very unsanitary. If you have kids and you want to go to that overpriced amusement park or if you want to do some shopping in those tight shops or bar hopping oblivious to your surroundings you may have a great time there.

Old Orchard is nice - and the nearby water park/amusement is fun too

By Brad Parks |

Great time, bring a cooler to both it and FunTown/SplashTown.
20$ for parking near old orchard, then have a cooler of food for the day. Bring water boards for wave fun.
Then go to FunTown/SplashTown at 40$/person for the day, but lots of fun and a big park!

I have been coming here for years and hope to continue

By USMCRip |

I am not sure how many years I have been coming here but a good guess is 16 years. It has changed but it is slow changes and nothing changed has been bad.
I enjoy the beach and the water. The closer to the pier the more crowded it is so we usually stay around a mile away but close to the water. I like the idea of going back to the cottage for bath room breaks, lunch and etc.
There are not a lot of public bathrooms .
The water the last couple years has been full of something that looks like algae
There is always something to do (amusements and food).
Water is usual cold or very cold.
I love OOB
And will be back.

Family vacation

By rebecca s |

This was a fun and busy vacation, as we camped just beyond the main beach drive. We could walk down from the camp site to the beach and multiple activities. It had decent shopping, good food and the beach was really nice. Mini golfing, amusement park, and other venues are close by. Our gang loved it! They are hoping to return soon!

Old Orchard Beach Maine

By stlhitman2012 |

There is so much to see and do in old orchard beach. It is very quite and peaceful you are able to relax and enjoy what the area truelly has to offer

Not good at all

By GetOutThere |

We’ve been here approximately 8 hours and if it wasn’t a 4 hr drive to get home, we would have left already. Everything is dirty. No masks. No social distancing. The beach is gross. The water is gross. The “boutique hotel” we're staying in is gross. I’m literally in shock of how bad it all is. I’ve never smelled so much weed. A guy just lit up a joint right next to us at the Thursday fireworks. We have little kids with us. The pier is like a carny place on stilts. It’s not a fishing pier. I’ve been to dozens of beaches, including Jersey, and this is just really awful and I feel bad for bringing my family here.

Awful beach town

By Jan S |

I could not stand this place, everything about it bothered me. The beach was so crowded that everyone was on top of each other, the carnival is tacky and old. The pier was fun for about 5 minutes, until I ate the food at the restaurant at the end of the pier - horrible! One restaurant has a sign on the front door to alert people not to wear their gang colors in the establishment, what goes on here? The shopping is all cheap and tacky touristy stuff - I was disappointed in the whole experience. There are so many other great beaches in the area, don't waste your time on this one.

Favorite New England Beach.

By Curly S |

As many people go flocking to Hampton Beach I would much rather take the extra ride and travel up to Maine. Orchard Beach has everything you want in a beach that Hampton is lacking way more relaxing 😎

Quite in Winter, the best in Summer

By Vivien Mattei |

A great, very clean and beautiful area by the sea. Miles of sandy, clean beaches. Full of motels, hoteles, and cabins that in the Winter look like ghost town but it seams that in Summer is the place to be. Great variety of restaurants. Has its own Town Hall with excellent service. Stayed at the Grand Victorian, by the Pier. Amusement park open only in late Spring and Summer.

Decent place to spend some vacation time.

By Gerry N |

We passed through here on our way up to Acadia National Park. It was worth staying for the evening and enjoying the shops, food, and other activities in the area. I would recommend this place for an extended stay if you're with friends and want to have some fun.

Fun, easy visit

By David H |

We came in Late August thinking this is when the beach would be the warmest and busiest for activities. Come to find out, the beach was not busy at all (not the hottest day but still plenty warm). Large beach with great wave action for water-goers. plenty of activites around the beach and parking close. There is a city park just up the road that was a hidden gem for a family looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of the beach.

Beach & Play Land 2018

By gjc1935 |

We travel to OOB every year. We now take our grandchildren. We love the beach but there is so much more to do. Besides the beach there is also a boardwalk called Palace Playland. What we enjoy the most is the reasonably charged prices for 2 day passes that allow you & the children to ride "All: the rides as many times as you like. There are rides for both very young children as well as bigger thrill rides. They just open 2 new Roller Coasters this year ! This place is Great !

great family vacation

By LouisvilleGrace |

I have never been to old orchard beach maine . we just got back from the trip and wanted to say what a great place this is for families. It was starting to get busy this weekend ,may 19-20th. next week will be the start of the summer and all the rides and games will be in full swing. most of the shops and stores and ice cream shops were open. you must try the pier fries when you are there and the fried dough is huge no matter where you buy it. prices are good and very comparable to the other places there.

Very crowded and dirty

By Str8ladboxers |

Nothing special, it’s quite dirty with trash in places and very crowded. With everything going on at the moment (COVID) it’s not the best place to go.

KARAOKE at The Pier - Monday and Tuesdays - SUCKS!! Dont Go there !! OOB - Old Orchard Beach Maine

By Leo B |

Just a quick note a DJ named JOEYOKE is the owrst DJ i have ever encountered. Stay Away for m the Pier for Karaoke and find somewhere else to Sing. He will give you very Bad sound when your singing, and his library of songs are not updated. You will be very disapointed... YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

JOEY OKE - is a JOKE!! Worst DJ ever!

TRASHY TOWN

By ilikequiche |

This town has gone down hill, while prices have gone up. We used to spend a few days every July, but have not been there in the past 10 years and I’m glad we weren’t to see the demise of this town. I made the mistake of going this July and I wish I had not. We actually left a day early because it was so crowded, expensive, low caliber of people, angry husbands, drugs, cars drag racing up and down the main road, loud and dangerous. The beach was filthy and everyone was drunk all day. Noticed a lot of Canadians visited there and I think its sad, that that’s the representation they see of the U.S.

Great beach

By onecoolraisin |

We spent the day here and had a blast. The beach is very clean and wasn’t crowded. If you need a bathroom, avoid the pier as you have to pay to get in and it’s filthy.

Total Fun & Fine Foods

By Charles P |

The Shops, The Pier, The local Bands who play on the Pier, The fine foods and Fun shopping at the Local clothing and Swim wear shops. OOB Can't be beat ! Great for a Family day out or a Weekend stay, it's all fun and being only a step away from the beach where you can relax under the sun, take a swim and also enjoy the Fun Park right there, ride the fun rides and play the fun games for lots of great prizes. It's fun for the whole Family ! :)

Old Orchard Beach

By kappy26 |

Went for a one day trip on the Downeaster train. Had a great time and great weather. Nice sandy beach and nice people in Maine

OOB in winter.

By NHjo |

We took a walk on the beach on an early March day, when it was cold and a bit blustery. There was some snow on the beach that hadn't been washed away yet, and lots of pigeons and seagulls roaming the beach and the rooftops. Nothing was open except for a few restaurants farther away from the pier. That'll change in a few months. This place is so different in the winter and so quiet, even though a lot of residents live there all year.

Tourist central

By Owen D |

This place is filled with tourists and its their main income. Its always very crowded and most everything there is dedicated to selling random things to tourists, some of which are very odd. If you're not a fan of crowds then don't go here. There are lots of food stalls but most are full of junk. The beach itself is nice, once you get past the board walk where there was a variety of disgusting things in the sand. If you don't like crowds don't go here.

Average Boardwalk at best

By Lazg418 |

Only positive - we did not meet one rude or mean employee all weekend. Everyone was very nice.

Other than that, no positives. Dirty. Overcrowded. More like an oversized Hampton Beach versus a NJ Shore Boardwalk. We assumed the food would be mediocre (at best) but it was even worse than we anticipated. Who knew you could mess up a hot dog... but you can!

Most bathrooms are private and you have to pay $.50 to go in -- if they are open. If they aren't being supervised there is a pad lock on them and you have to find a bathroom... Good luck if you have a toddler like we did.

Love Maine. Love Boardwalks. Will not be returning to Old Orchard.

Beautiful stretch on the Atlantic ocean, and yes, a carousel!

By Heidi C |

Old Orchard Beach is the classic New England seaside town. About 75K people in the summer and barely 8000 folks in the winter. The sandy beach stretches out a total of seven miles, north up around Pine Point and south to Saco. The beach is clean and has some memorial benches near the dune grass. During summer, town lifeguards are on duty. This is a town owned beach so it is patrolled by the OOB police department and the town taxpayers pay the bills. Dogs are allowed on the beach in summer after 5:00 pm and before 9:00 am. There are two municipal parking lots (one has outdoor showers) and many privately owned lots, cost to park is dependent on the weather and the demand. Municipal parking fees are $3.00 per hour or buy a resident or visitors pass at the town hall. The parking fees go into the town budget to help pay for the town services. This is not a wealthy town nor could you call it fancy. There is always a project in process. Lots of tourist activities in the summer and the very quiet winters offer time for adult education and 50+ Club outings and solace on the Eastern Trail. Every sunrise at Old Orchard Beach is a beautiful painting over the Atlantic.

Vintage car parade in middle of town

By Lysanne B |

We were there early september and we witness a vintage car parade. Wow that was awesome, week end regular event. What a line up! lots of very old and 1960's cars as well. Some crafty cars and trucks. Lots of fun. I hear this happens regularly, so don't miss it!

Old orchard beach ⛱️ not worth it

By NayaKeti N |

Not worth the time and money for this dirty beach. Crowded, no garbage bin around, no wash and rinse area near by, one outdoor cleaning area which is in the middle of the sand area, who does this? You clean yourself and you step into the sand. It's not worth the hype.

Not For Us

By John G |

We stayed along the main strip, on the beach. The beach was magnificent both during the day and at night. Not too crowded and fairly pleasant and peaceful.

Nightlife, including the carnival area seemed a bit seedy with many obviously intoxicated people walking and some "performing". If I were not a parent, I may have found this amusing but with teen children I was not amused. Perhaps during the day would have been a better time to explore but we had other commitments that occupied our days into early evening. Keep in mind this review is based mostly on nighttime experience with kids.
This would definitely be a fun, memorable experience for young twenty something's with friends or romantic partners.

We have lived, full time, steps from an ocean beach so the beach was appreciated but perhaps not as much as someone who did not grow up/live in close proximity to an ocean beach.
This is a large capacity, beautiful beach. We never felt crowded and had plenty of room to spread out.

The primary purpose of our visit was a sports tournament in the area. This was not a thoroughly planned vacation.

I can see how others would thoroughly enjoy this place but, beyond the beach, it simply is not our thing.

Crosswinds motel and cottage's cute place in old orchard beach Maine pet friendly heated pool close to everything

Fun Place

We had a fun time visiting Old Orchard Beach Maine. Lots to do such as Palace Playland Amusement Park, a walk through the town, the pier, and the beautiful beach.

Old Orchard Beach

By Kimberly F |

Old Orchard Beach is great place for a family/couples trip! Beautiful beach that stretches for miles! It also has plenty of shops, restaurants and even has an amusement park and arcade! We had a blast here! The pier has ships and restaurants/bars as well. I really enjoyed my time here & will be returning next year!

Go somewhere else.

By Susi R |

Tacky, dirty, expensive COVID incubation area. No one wearing masks. Many places rundown and/or closed. The only saving grace is that we are close to the beach.

large beach at low tide

By ralikirk |

Very crowded but fun beach. Go at low tide and it would be a lot bigger and more fun for kids. Watch out if you bring food to the beach the seagulls will actually fight for it and attack you. Best if you just go without food and just check out the many restaurants further a bit from the beach

Old Orchard Beach vacation

By 182coakes |

Such a wonderful place to visit. Downtown provides so much. All kinds of shopping, entertainment, restaurants, and a carnival type area as well. They also provides benches and tables throughout to sit and rest and all of this is right at the beaches door. Wonderful view and pleasant beach. Can't ask for more..

Beach Town

By DLP |

A beachy little town with a nice beachy vibe to it. The smell of salt air is always present and the salt air feels good to breathe in. There is plenty of things to keep you busy…swimming, the pier, rides, miniature golf and restaurants to eat.

Nothing much to see here.

By Tour48711028687 |

We arrived a little before noon and only a few things were open. Parking is expensive to walk around and see nothing. We were excited to see the pier and it was so disappointing. Looked nothing like the photos and nothing was open in there.

Beautiful beach 😍

By Journey36079305467 |

Beautiful beach with fine sand. The theme park the restaurants. Once we’ve been there, we’ll definitely want to come back. For the little ones for the big ones everyone finds his happiness.

My very favorite vacation location

By USMCRip |

Once a year for the last 14+ years I and my family have spent a week at old orchard beach (OOB). I have always rented a place away but within walking distance of the pier.
most of the places we have rented we have been around other families so for the most part it is like a quiet family neighborhood.
Of course the closer you are to the water the higher the price.
Plenty of things to do near and a short drive away.
Want “busy” and lots of people head to the pier.
Just love OOB.
Parking is always an issue.
And there are not a lot of public bathrooms.

Touristic

By Annikamikaze |

In case you want to enjoy your vacation with drinking, fun park and junk food close to the beach with lots of others, this is the place to be. In case you look for more (good food, quiet hotels etc) then stay away from here. Beach is nice in off season as not crowded at all.

Stay away from this place!

By Tricia H |

Toe Rings and Things on Old Orchard Pier is horrible! Using windex to moisten toe, she forcefully shoves a ring on that she thinks might fit without ever measuring. Regardless of how many times I pulled my foot away and told her she was hurting me, she kept insisting that she knows the best way to size rings and get them on. I finally had enough and paid for the rings she had on my toes, which she doubled the cost on, rather than let her touch my feet again. That night, 2 of my toes were swollen, cut and had blisters. The next day I had to have one if my toes looked at because it hurt so bad, IT WAS BROKEN! The photo is 2 weeks later.

Shopping!

By Jennifer P |

We had a lot of places to shop for souvenirs. Plenty of places to eat with variety. Easy access to the beach.

Not bad

By Stephanie J |

We went to Old Orchard Beach for the day, since we've never been before. On the plus side, there was no seaweed, the water was clean, there was smooth sand underneath the water rather than rocks, and you could go pretty far out without being too deep. However, it was crowded, there was a lot of trash on the beach (including a condom wrapper), there are no free public bathrooms, and the water is freezing. To be fair, you're not going to find warm ocean water in Maine. Parking is also expensive, and a bit of a walk from the actual beach. But, we had a fun day, and now we can say we've been!

Tacky but Nostalgic

By ldtc2 |

We returned here because my husband used to spend his vacations here as a youngster. I think if I had young children it would be great. The beach was nice.

Beautiful Place

By Pam R |

Went during mid October. Such beautiful colors and friendly place to visit. Everywhere you went the fall colors were amazing and it didn't matter if it was main road, highway or side street. Definitely will be back.

Beach observations

By Donna M |

I found this beach to be the dirtiest beach by far amongst all the beaches ive traveled on the east coast! A staggering amount of cigarette butts left on beach. Although there are many shops to visit I suggest you stick to those or walk the beach to pinepoint you will see a difference in the cleanliness of beaches. I can not understand why anyone would sit on this beach! Between the buts the brown seaweed and the punks i would not recommend the beach area at all. However if you do choose this beach, the best food for lunch or dinner is Big Daddys and for breakfast Breakfast Bagel I believe its the same owner and right on the strip. Delicious dinners.

Typical Maine vacations

By investime |

Nice and clean beach. You can walk for a long time, amusements, restaurants and little shops. You have commercials areas and some less.

Don’t bother

By Kelly E |

The beach itself is fine. The shops, the town, the pier? They are absolutely filthy and disgusting. I have been to numerous beaches across the country and this one was by far the worst. There is trash, debris laying around. The other issue is that on many of the establishments there were signs warning people not to bring guns or weapons of any kind onto their property. Made my family feel quite uneasy.

Huge beach, quiet, laid back

By ClaireWithLove |

We really liked Old Orchard Beach and were thinking about staying here next time instead of a night in Portland. The beach was super long and wide with hard packed sand which makes for easier walking. The water is very chilly in June - foot numbing. We found a number of huge clam shells, the size of my palm and even my hand on the beach. Even empty smaller shells still attached that made it successfully back in my suitcase.

To the left of the pier is a bath to the beach and road, there is a foot washing station. There is no bench to sit on though.

It was a small town with an amusement park 4 - 10 pm, 12 pm - 10 pm on the weekend but was not open when we were there. Check the hours before you go.

There were a few boardwalk shops (closed during the day when were there) leading to the Old Orchard Beach Pier Restaurant and Bar. Although the food menu did not look exceptional, the restaurant had outdoor seating at natural wood tables that ran across the front of the restaurant facing the water and the right side of the beach. Sitting there to eat or drink and enjoy the view would be wonderful.

There were a couple of stores in the town. It was quiet in the morning, so it seemed like a nice place to relax for the day. Kind of a small, quaint, laid back beach town. It reminded me of a smaller version of Ocean City, Maryland.

I didn't see any public bathrooms as we walked around.

9/10 Great town, lots to do

By Eric W |

We visit OOB quite regularly. We love it. Very low congestion even in peak times as compared to southern beaches. Very low crime as well. As usual places to eat can be expensive and sometimes even over the top. But its to be expected I suppose. Two MAJOR gripes about this Beach. The Pier.......or should I say the wooden eyesore from hell. This thing is not a pier. it is an extension of the same thoroughfare on the streets but over the water. It is not kept up, it is aesthetically in shambles, it is ridden with smells of old beer and cigarettes, it looks bad from near and afar. There is no way to walk out on the pier and enjoy the sights of the ocean. no way to fish from the pier, and should be removed completely of it occupying vendors and made into an actual Pier that you can enjoy. so unless you want a knocked off pair of knockoff sunglasses, stale clam strips or a shot of penicillin, i would stay clear.
Secondly, the town of OOB seems to have some allergic reaction to public restrooms. it is very difficult to find access near the beach for relief. This may be part of the smell from the Pier. Rent a condo near the beach so you have a bathroom at your disposal and stay away from the pier and OOB is a beautiful family friendly vacation must do.

Always fun to visit!

By Tropicaldestinations |

I have been enjoying this place since childhood. Perfect place to get away and relax. I frequent the food places which are only open during the summer and eating in the square next to the fountain is great. Beaches are clean and people are mostly friendly.

Really nice beach

By Kirkby84 |

The beach was full of beach goers during our two day stay but we never found it to be over crowded. We setup farther down from the pier which was more crowed. A number of dining options are nearby, as well as accommodations.

bills pizza

If you love pizza, you need to try Bill's pizza in old orchard beach Maine. Started
going to old orchard when I was 11. My father always use to say, got to get me some Bills pizza. As an 11 year old, you really don't appreciate it because everything taste
good. As I got older and started going as an adult, I found my love for Bills pizza. Whenever you go, there is such a line but, you wait because you know the wait is worth it. I went this September and that is the first place my husband and I went. Don't
mind telling you, by the time we got back to our camp site, I was stuffed but, guess
what, that was the first place we hit the next day. Even got a pizza pie to take home.
I would tell everyone to make sure you check this place out but, I think they have
it covered. For all you pizza lovers, you really need to say, got to get me some Bills
pizza.

thing for all age's the kid's loved it! that made it a good trip for everyone they loved the play land and the beach.

Very Touristy

By DKPuck |

Many shops but very very touristy. If crowds arent your thing, dont go here. Sort of reminded me of Vegas without the gambling. Some odd smells too.

Beach is nice, but everything else is overpriced, divey, a little sketchy and pay for bathrooms? Come on...

By Tyler M |

The beach is huge. The further you get away from the pier the better it gets. Less busy better to swim. No waves though, which is a tad strange. It is a great people watching spot, especially on the benches around the carnival or at the outside decks at some of the restaurants. Not sure I would bring you kids here though because some of the people are super sketchy. It just feels run down and trashy at spots.

The biggest con is that you have to pay to use the rest rooms. I mean, come on, seriously? Parking prices are absurd, food prices are absurd, the arcade prices are absurd, the ride ticket prices are absurd....and you have to pay to use the bathroom? That's a bunch of crap. Especially when the stalls don't have locks, the toilet paper is out, and the seats are broken....If you're going to make people pay for the bathrooms at least, ya know, take care of them.

It's a fun place for a couple nights if you keep away from the rowdy, obnoxious crowds. it can be quite pretty and entertaining. However, I wouldn't be able to stay a week here.

Don't miss Historic Inn@

By Shayna S |

Quaint historic small inn at the top of old orchard Street by the pier. Walk to all the attractions and only short distance to the beach. One of the oldest inns in Maine. Period decorated rooms. Breakfast for guests in the dining room or outside deck. Free coffee tea and homemade cookies and muffins. Close to highway abf train station. What a super place with very accommodating staff wholl do whatever to make your stay special. Highly recommend this

Always a great vacation!

By Ann B |

Another vacation at Old Orchard. Aquarius is a great place to call home for the visit. Love the patio, the flowers and the beach was so close! Very accommodating hosts! Clean and comfortable. Close to all the Maine attractions- easy to explore surrounding towns.

Super fun time!

By KFJ |

From pier fries to the ocean and basketball courts! Something for everyone here. Parking can be problematic so plan ahead. Make sure to go to big daddy's for adult food!

Go for the experience.

By NHjo |

We live only a few miles from Old Orchard Beach (OOB), so I'll give you a 'local's' point of view. The beach itself is very nice, and you can walk to several other beaches (Pine Point, Ocean Park, Ferry Beach, etc.). The beach is right off the arcade and the village, where there are several restaurants, fast food places, and bars (good and not so good), shops, amusements, and so on. It's particularly nice at night when there are fireworks once or twice a week and all the neon lights are on. Kids love this place. There are plenty of hotels, inns, B&Bs, and condo rentals. You're also close to some great restaurants, bars and shops in Saco, Biddeford, and Scarborough, and it's not far from Portland or Kennebunkport. Some consider OOB and its arcade and pier 'tacky', but it depends on how you look at it. It can be tacky, but it's a lot of fun. The pier is historic and has seen better days, but it's a marvel. Tons of French-Canadians come to OOB every summer, and it's more popular than ever, especially after Covid.

Go for the kitch but understand it's not a nice/pretty place

By trav226 |

I wanted to see this solely for the pier, as I've never seen a pier before that has little 'house'-like businesses on it. It's cute from a distance, but on the pier itself, its narrow and gross in a coney island type way. There's something appealing to me about a run-down amusement park - it's sad and depressing in a romantic way. The beach was crowded, okay looking but the whole area has a honky tonk trashy coney island vibe. And the people OMG. It's nice to know the south doesn't corner the market on white trash. Take a snap of the funky pier, grab a t-shirt and then move on to far more attractive areas. Absolutely do not eat here, whatever you do. Seriously, if you're starving head into the Rite Aid for granola bars.

Quirky, kitschy, fun!

By Cathy M. |

Love the pier. Love the vibe. Tattoo shops, bikers, 80's rock coming out of the bars, candy, carnival rides, great arcade. Love! Water is always freezing because it's Maine but still the best.

Not impressed.

By Dawn W |

We were not impressed. The area down by the pier is like a cheap carnie environment. We tried to find someplace where we could get some lobster to eat. There was nothing available that had a decent rating.

Reminds you of the jersey shore/ coney island

By Lindsayyy412 |

Nobody was wearing masks during covid. Beach was fun if you’re into the jersey shore scene. Has Amusement park for kids. Pier has food and a bar at the end with outdoor seats.

Quiet visit during winter.

By toscwolfstar |

The place is almost dead in the winter. Easy on street parking..
We never go during the summer due to the crowds and lack of parking.

A stop by Old Orchard Beach

By Elizabeth R |

We spent a few hours here on September 6, which was after Labor Day. Rides were all closed and most shops were getting ready to close for the season. This was more of a family place. Rides, Arcades and shops. The beach was pretty and there were still many people enjoying it.

Don’t miss the opportunity to visit Old Orchard Beach if you have the chance!!!

By Jeff |

This was our second time visiting Old Orchard Beach. Our first time was in mid October and this time we visited mid September. October was great. The temperatures were seasonal which was great. Not hot walking around and quite peaceful because the busy season had passed. Our latest trip there was in September and it was definitely a great day for the beach. Lots to see as all the shops and restaurants were still open and lots of tourists around having a great time. I would definitely recommend Old Orchard Beach to anyone of all ages.

No bathrooms

By Heather S |

Beautiful place to visit very sad that Maine charges for public restrooms not family friendly for this I had to go to an atm as I use my debit card to pay for my family of 5 to use a toilet maine should be ashamed of themselves

I'm a pool person

By cnx4789 |

I came to Maine exclusively to say that I've been in the ocean. I found it to have an odd smell. Went around 3 PM and found it very crowded. Parking is expensive the cheapest I found was $15 but there is a trolley available for $1 one way.

Low Key but lacking good dining options

By septaleon |

First time visiting Old Orchard Beach. It seemed like it has seen better days. Many empty storefronts on the main drag and if your looking for a restaurant with anything more than sandwiches or bar food your out of luck. We were looking for a casual formal restaurant but couldn’t find one. No Italian restaurants in the beach area outside of pizza. The Landmark a decent restaurant stands closed as well as Rocco’s a pasta restaurant. Walking around the main pier area and had to use the bathroom I was directed to restrooms that charge .50 a person (and they weren’t even well kept) How do u not have free public restrooms in a town that makes it’s $$$ off of tourism? It definitely offers a low key relaxing atmosphere and there are still many decent hotel options, we stayed at the Sandpiper which I highly recommend. My advice would be to go to Wildwood NJ, a fun beach town with a five mile boardwalk and several amusement piers, plenty of restaurants and lots more to do. The one thing Old Orchard Beach has going for it is it’s accessible by Amtrak right to the heart of town and a half block from the beach. It made arriving by train a breeze. No car needed.

Best Maine Beach

By Daydream13755139070 |

It is a great vacation place with kids during the summer, and even better for couples and seniors in the spring and fall. Old style, quaint, and a certain charm that only exists in Maine. I especially like the Alouette Beach Resort. Been there many times for the last 17 years.

Vacation spot

By catherine d |

Is a go to place for a vacation. The main area for the beach area has a lot of small stores. Most are places to get souvenirs, but do have some regular shops. Fast food stands, good food.

Family friendly town loaded with dozens of fun places for all ages

By valbill071 |

A short drive from Portland--20 minutes--Old Orchard Beach is a quintessential beach town with a lovely 7 mile stretch of well maintained beach. There are a large selection of places to play---arcades, amusement park, water parks, bowling alley, mini golf, shuffleboard. There is evening entertainment and fireworks every Thursday and several nightclubs and bars. There are numerous eateries in every price range and taste. The public library is a gem---brand new, wonderful staff and fabulous group of Friends who operate a Book Shed on the property.

Tacky!!!

By Virginia H |

We had heard it was a must see but we found it dirty and congested. Couldn’t park near the beach at all and the eateries consisted of fast food outlets. Yuk!

Great for a quick day trip

By rammyun |

It was a little crowded when we went. It gives you a Santa Monica vibe if you are looking for something like that. There is a lot of local restaurants with great seafood around

Okay to dip your feet in Atlantic Ocean but overrated

By LoveMyFoodGirl1 |

It has been especially hot this summer.

And it was no different walking around the main boulevard at Old Orchard Beach. It was hot and stuffy and full of people.

Driving around can be difficult - as there are are a lot cars milling about. If you drive on the side streets, you can find meter parking.

The boardwalk is crowded. There is a carnival atmosphere.

Depending on where you walk on the beach - it can be crowded and not so clean. The section to the right of the pier - has cigarette butts and people smoking.

The water is cold (or refreshing from another perspective) - and the waves strong near the end of the day.

There are a lot of places offering rolls and pizza. A large selection to be found.

When we were there, there was stage and shows going on.

Everyone talks about Old Orchard Beach - so you should try to visit it at least once - but I find it hard to imagine spending more than a day here. I have seen better beaches and crowded, noisy streets are not what I enjoy on vacation.

Save your money

By B L |

To be honest, his place is a dump. . They charge for everything from public toilets to absorbent parking fees and you best not be late paying or there is a parking attendant that swoops down like a seagull on a french fry to give parking tickets. The stores are all the same cheap junk that's been in the windows for decades. Don't waste your time it is the most unfriendly and greedy town in the state.

Honky-tonk fun

By NHjo |

Memorial Day is only a week away, and everything's opening up -- the pier, the rides, the fast food joints, and the old-school restaurants and bars. If you can handle the honky-tonk, noise, and crowd aspects, it's fun. The beach itself is beautiful, especially at low tide. It hooks up with several other beaches. You can walk to Scarborough's Pine Point Beach in one direction, and to several little Saco beaches in the other, a total of about seven miles. The views are also pretty great -- Prouts Neck, Biddeford Pool, some small islands and a few lighthouses.

Lovely beach, will return

By Karen FM |

We loved it here. Not much open but for two days it was a great spot. Lots to search for on the beach, clean, friendly feeling spot. Feels very rugged Maine while still being in the south. Kids had a blast.

Excellent, my wife and i enjoyed it.

By PatrickWarchol |

It was our first visit to Maine and I thought it would be a fun place and it sure was! I never thought I'd say this but it stacks up to the beaches in California and Florida minus the palm trees of course. Would love to go there again because it provided a great memory.

FUN Place to walk around and shop or take a dip in the ocean to cool down

By angela |

I really like walking around to see the diffent shops and what they had to offer. Some shops had good prices while others had, more touristy prices. The beach can be crowded and the sand is REALLY hot so you will want to wear shoes or stick your feet in the water to cool down. The food can be a bit expensive, but that is because they are selling to the tourist as well, oh and parking you have to pay for too, but all and all, it's not a bad place to go.

crowded

By jbogdan001 |

it was holiday week, but crowded, elevated hill like sand to water. sand wasnt as nice as near by beaches and trash left out by others.

What a great day!

By Lynda B |

We had a great beach day! Parking was reasonably priced $ 20 ( much cheaper than others) We parked at the 7 Seas Parking on East Grand Avenue....we went thru town and this parking was right near the pier and very well located to get to the beach right across the street (Kinney St or Harrisburg St). We were able to walk down the beach, go under the pier, walk by the ferris wheel and carousel and bought fried dough for lunch on the main drag. All and all a great day. Note: we found one restroom across the street from the ferris wheel and carousel. ... 50 cents to use the restroom for adults, kids are free.

Great experience nice place

By vsedille25 |

We really enjoyed it here with our group of teens, parked at George's parking which was clean, had bathrooms and changing rooms and $20 fee for the day I felt was worth it, a 1 min walk to beach/pierfrom there. Lots of quick fair food, a nice beach store that I felt was reasonably priced, York was way more expensive. We came on a tues beach wasn't overcrowded, nice sandy beach, great waves, arcades for kids. We will be back. The only thing I didn't like was the public bathrooms are .75 fee on the pier but I just walked to our parking area to go. I didn't feel it was run down at all. I saw some reviews that said that. Hampton Beach in New Hampshire is rundown, Old Orchard beach we felt was a great experience.

Loved IT

By MarySEverett_Wa |

What a wonderful place... old time amusement park on the beach in a cute little town... would love to come back again!

From Fun to Tourist Trap

By Jason V |

Old Orchard, never again. What used to be a friendly and fun destination has turned into an overpriced tourist trap. Most employees look fed up, some downright rude, to the point where their responses were laughably absurd.

Prices are outrageous: $35 USD for a simple double vodka soda in a plastic cup on the pier is nothing short of robbery. Restaurants aren’t any better—plastic plates, greasy fried food, and inflated bills.

In the end, you pay a premium for poor service, low-quality food, and an atmosphere that has completely lost its charm. For the same price, you’d be far better off booking a real 5-star stay in Mexico—superior quality, service, and experience.

Bottom line: Old Orchard has nothing left to offer except disappointment.

Sand and waves

By brobit |

Great clean beach. Not too crowded. Lifegards are present (day). Take a sun bath, play in waves, play beach "sports".

Meh!!

By Va-K-Shin |

We were spending a few days in Ogunquit and decided to check out Old Orchard Beach which is a short drive north along the coast. I've never visited but was curious because I heard so much about it.
Upon arriving, we weren't impressed. Everything around the pier area looked run down. The beach itself was decent, but I prefer the beautiful beach at Ogunquit. Everything else was very unappealing...seemed like an old carnival setting with tacky shops and greasy restaurants. We stayed a couple of hours and went back to Ogunquit. Very disappointing!

Clean and big beach

By bvoyage2018 |

Perfect for everyone, no one is going to steal your bags and the water is not as cold and bad as some people say trust me. You won't be disappointed!

Not my cup of tea

By PVonthemove |

We just visited for the day while staying in Ogunquit. We parked our car in the Seven Seas parking lot, which is a very short walk to the center of town. There is an array of tshirt shops, souvenir shops, hotels, and dining. There is also an amusement area complete with thrill rides, and a pier extending out over the ocean contains shops, rides, food and drink choices. For me, I was not impressed and would not visit again. Not that it was horrible, just not my cup of tea.

Love it

By cody1099 |

Always clean and Amazing thank you for such a beautiful vacation always come back every year . Best place

Lots to do right beside the ocean

By Vicki E |

There is shopping, a pan amusement park, restaurants, arcade and a beach all together. The biggest challenge is finding a bathroom! Really fun time.

Excellent beach!

By PhilT243 |

Nice beach to spend the day, the further away from the pier you go the more room you'll have to spread out

Really pretty beach

By LivingInWien |

We visited the beach the other day and it was gorgeous - very wide and flat at the low tide with beautiful views on a curved bay. Our friends have a house on the beach and it was not crowded by their street. The town of Scarborough is also very cute,

Old Ochard Beach pier - NOT GREAT!

By mriveraocasio |

The pier was dirty, dumpy and I couldn't get out of there fast enough. Although I was expecting crowds, but this was very different, definitely not my cup of tea.

Nice beach, disappointing town

By Carrie D. |

Over the years we've been to over a dozen beach towns along the east coast, from South Carolina up through Maine. Old Orchard Beach was not my favorite. In some beach towns, particularly ones like Ocean City Maryland or Seaside Hts. New Jersey, you get such a fun energy. In others, like the Outer Banks of North Carolina, you get such a sense of peace and relaxation. Old Orchard Beach gave me neither of these.

We did enjoy the beach, although it was so incredibly crowded. It's a fun vibe with the amusement park in the background. And the beach goes on for what seems like miles. But ultimately the crowds were a little bit much for me, as was the distance we had to carry things from where we had to park.

Beyond the beach, the touristy area was just not my thing. It was insanely crowded and parking was so expensive--$30 on a Saturday afternoon. The shops were ok, but so many were a little dingy. Most of them carried the same things, but at different prices. The amusement park looked fun, but we weren't interested in riding the rides.

Overall, I was a little disappointed. I was hoping for a fun, retro kind of beach vibe and all I felt was that it was a little sad and run down, that its best days were behind it. I hope that's not the case.

great beach, crazy crowded at the pier

By wolfgirlemt |

Was here visiting a friend who owns a house here. Nice little town if you stay away from the pier. The pier area itself is busy and is all tourist trap type businesses and an amusement park, we stayed away from that area. There is parking at the pier for tourists for $10 a car (locals get a parking pass).

The town itself is small-town, the beach though is amazing! We walked down to the beach from the house since it was just a few blocks away (there is parking near the beach for locals but it was a nice day). The beach has a lifeguard and was very clean, a lot of people but not crowded. The waves were mellow, not the huge surfer kind, but the kind you can go play in without getting knocked over all the time. I loved this location!

Great visit

By bethypoo |

So many things to see and do. I am glad that we arrived prior to the beginning of the holiday weekend. We got to see the area while it was quiet and now see it being lively. Nice area, nice shops and great beach.

Clean, Family Friendly Beach

By MicheinMA |

Spent a few hours each day on the beach during our recent visit to OOB. Beach itself was very clean, lifeguards attentive, lots of families visiting. Posted signs for no alcohol or dogs on the beach, didn't see any dogs but there was plenty of people drinking alcohol. Not that it was a big deal, but strange that it isn't enforced at all if it's posted.

Went after labor day. No crowds just peace and quiet.

By Tony M |

Had a great time. Stayed ar Island Motel. Great location and great owners. Plan to go back this year same time period.

Small and aging, however a nice family beech

By dnopain |

Many little shops off of the beech. Pier is in poor condition. Beech has lots of activity and affordable family activities. Handicap parking is limited but available.

Good for families, for singles/couples over 16 not so much

By Paradox15 |

Probably great if you have tons of kids that need stuff to do but for a single person it's a little bit of a train wreck. Extremely crowded, hard to find parking, loud, amusement park. Just general chaos. I probably would have loved this place when I was about 12. I wanted to try a few things while I was down there but I felt the urgent need to escape the madness. I think it has a lot of potential for families with kids under 16 so can't say it's bad. It's just not a solo / couple place.

King tide.

By NHjo |

The King tide was taking place in late November and I took a few photos of it a few hours after high tide. It's amazing how quiet this place is after peak tourist season.

It is a great beach that I have been visiting for years

By USMCRip |

It can be difficult and/or expensive to park as there are few places to park for free.
Are you staying for a couple days? Again limited and expensive. Don’t just assume you’ll find a place to stay.
There are a lot of campgrounds in the area, same as stated for staying here.
We rented a apartment a year ago for a week.
The beach was crowded and the water was cold.
Plenty to do at the “pier”.
Did a lot of walking.
Love love this place and plan on coming back for many more years.
FYI- I have been coming here for years, around 18 years and only missed one year in that time.

Nice vacations

By BCS22 |

We stayed at Bailey’s campground and had Fun. This trip was about Family FUN and FOOD. We had our first experience at Pirates Patio off the strip which was nice for Us. Can’t wait to come back next year....SEE you OOB.

Sunset and the Harvest Moon at Old Orchard Beach.

By NHjo |

I took some photos of the the full Harvest moonrise and also of the sunset colors on the water and beach at Old Orchard. It was a warm evening for October, and the colors were magnificent. The photos taken with my phone camera of the moonrise don't adequately reflect how huge it was and its deep orange color. It makes me want to invest in a real camera.

Great Beach house to rent!

By MDSLPmom |

We rented a terrific 4 BR/4BA house in Old Orchard Beach, ME from 7/27-8/3/19 called Parcher By the Sea. What a perfect spot for families to have a wonderful vacation so close to a big, beautiful beach! The house was very well decorated with a well equipped kitchen and comfortable beds and furnishings. The owners live close by and we’re friendly, accommodating, helpful and prompt if we had any questions or concerns! We highly recommend this home for a fabulous family vacation! Definitely 5 stars!

Nice Beach

By D7117DSsusanc |

Came for a short trip. I love this quaint beach town. Reminds me of the beach towns I used to go to as a child.

Very fun but can get expensive

By Linds945 |

We had a great time at OOB with all the rides. I wish they had a cheaper option so you can do all of the rides - the bracelets are expensive if you are only there for a few hours. They make sense if you're there all day or multiple days though.

A town with great potential

By John P |

Simply put the town as seen better days. It's due for some major renovations, its not a place you want to spend more than 1 night. Although run down it still has its charm and does have future potential if renovated.

Love this Beach Town

By Susan E |

We spent 2 nights at OOB and loved the laid back atmosphere. While the weather wasn't cooperating with us spending any quality time on the beach the people we encountered were delightful, charming and very helpful. The shops and restaurants were wonderful.

Beautiful, clean beach....miles to walk on

Just as nice as I remember!

I used to come here on day trips as a child. This time I stayed at a hotel right on the beach and walked on the beach from the hotel to the pier and amusement park. Beautiful long sandy beach - and just as nice as I remember!

Cold

By 770MCP |

It's just a beach with alot of tourists. The same as most of the beaches up and down the coast. They do let dogs in the beach before 10am. It's clean. The day I went it wasn't crowded except for the seagulls.

Beautiful Beach!

By annfrma2000 |

We visited for a weekend get away, my first time, but def not my last! We loved it, you can lay on the beach and relax or walk into town and enjoy the carnival, restaurants and shops!

Tacky and run down

By cecnewjersey |

We did not like this town at all and ended using it a base to other locations: Cape Elizabeth, kennebunkport, Portland. There’s not even a nice restaurant in this place to grab a decent meal. The most gourmet here is probably elephant ears ... the beach is decent, that’s about it. Spare yourself the hiked up prices and go somewhere else a little more elegant

Love the beach and the shops

I grew up going to OOB every summer. Fast forward fifty years later, i still love going there. It has changed alot but that gives it character. Great vacation spot.

Somethings Never Change

By Dogswood |

We were staying in a town nearby so we thought we would visit for old times sake. At the end of September, on a warm Sunday evening almost everything is closed but it retains its gritty charm. The single train tracks still run by the beach - in fact an Amtrack train passed through while we were walking to the beautiful beach.

The worn ancient pier with its colourful eclectic buildings still stands (see photo). This place is worth a detour especially on a nice day

Fall New England trip

By Russ T |

Went to Old Orchard the end of October. It’s a beach community that shuts down after Labor Day we discovered. Quiet area, just not much to do. Ocean House was excellent place for dining.

Great September getaway

By winefan2016 |

Great beach with lots of motels of every kind.. restaurants . September is a lot quieter for older folks who want to relax.

Active, busy beach.

By Jackie V |

First visit to Old Orchard Beach. Very nice that there is so much around it, such as food venues and places for a drink. Like that you could walk up the stairs to the pier. The beach itself could have been cleaner. People need to pick up after themselves. Parking is a bit of a problem, since you can only put enough money in for 2 hours, which means you have to leave the beach to go put in more. I guess the parking lots are a better option.

Everything Closed

By Katharine M |

I have been coming here since birth (literally) & this year was the most disappointing. We came the first week of June & everything is closed, I mean everything even the end of the pier. We were so upset/disappointed bc it's my son's first visit & we were so excited but oh well I guess. The same time last year everything was open so I wonder what's going on.

fun fun fun

real roller coaster and beach breeze all together what else do you need??? Friendly vendors and people. Walk the beach when you are done or find a local restaurant and taste the great food they have to offer.

Covid

By Teresa C |

We went there for the day last week. If you are worried about Covid this is not the place to visit. On the beach people were not staying 6 feet away and in the town no one was wearing a mask.

Winter solstice.

By NHjo |

We went during the December solstice around sunset. The colors of the water were beautiful (pinks, ice blues), but it was very cold and windy. It was dark by 4:30, the shortest day of the year.

Old Orchard Beach is a great couples of family place!

By Patty H |

This Summer we had the chance to stay at Old Orchard Beach. It has the miles of sand beachs with shell collecting and swimable water. It may be chilly but I stayed in for an hour, and never worried about sharks due to the cool temperatures. In addition they have the amusement Park, the Pier, Surfing, bike riding and it's a good place for roller blades as well. Plenty of Hotels/ Motels and Restaurants to choose from, so you can pick your price points.

Nice large beach

By Coteclan1 |

It’s a good size beach. Plenty of room for people to spread out. Not sure if it was bc of covid but, we had plenty of room around us.

Beach was pretty clean as well. We did find several straws down I’m near the pier when walking which we collected and tossed out.

I feel like the pier was better for adults. You could smell the strong scent of weed.

They have lots of cute little places to eat. Prices can be expensive so check them out before heading in.

Would have been great if Splashtown/Funtown was open but, we understood due to covid not everything was open as normal.

Kids had a great time finding shells, rocks and crabs along the beach.

Wide open beaches

We happened on historic Old Orchard Beach during our coastal drive of South Maine. We parked our car in a designated lot and walked along the sidewalks to the amusement park. The whole ocean area is beautiful. The sand stretched for miles and we saw people of all ages sitting on beach chairs or blankets on shore listening to the surf. Some had ventured out and were wading in the dark blue water. Food and drinks were available on the pier and in local eateries. Souvenirs and clothing stores lined the entrance way. It was a very relaxing place to visit.

Great beach

By b w |

This is one of the nicest beaches We have been to on the east coast. The water is a bit cold, which is expected for being this far north, however it’s very nice and it is shallow with a sandy bottom for quite a way out allowing kids to play without worrying about a big wave making things difficult for them. Will definitely return.

Great beach in Old Orchard!

By Jean-Maxime Labonte |

Nice beach in Old Orchard! There were too many people but we found a place for us. The salty water was so good too! Nice place to go with the family too!

Great family fun

By Cjmastic |

Great location for family and couple fun. There is something here for everyone. From homemade ice cream to amusement park and a night life. Great location

Crowded carnival!

By bigchuck68 |

We always wanted to check out the pier. We went on a Thursday night. It was over 90 degrees. Thursday there is fireworks. There was an enormous crowd. There were lines everywhere for every vendor. There was a huge stage with the Salvation Army and the performance was LOUD. The performers kept asking the crowd to yell Amen. We walked around got and iced coffee at dunkin donuts. Went into a couple of shops. Went to the beach to see the ocean. When we realized we had 2 more hours u til fireworks my wife and son said let's get out of here. It was like being overcrowded at the local carnival. Traffic was at a standstill and intersections were gridlocked. We did drive out against the flow of traffic and saw a bandstand with a nice concert going on. We drove down south through waco and saw why people love the area so much. The pier area is the carnival In the beautiful area. We just are not Into Carnivals.

Kids first time.

By libertylove2115 |

Brought my daughter and son for their first time to the ocean. The beach was super nice and the kids loved it. Walked down the pier and checked out the shops. Had a great time.

Great Wavy Beach Day

By CAPRGRL |

Day trip from Kennebunk Camping to Old Orchard Beach. We arrived about 9:50 and luckily found parking at George’s parking … 20 bucks for the day and included bathroom and change room
access … which was about a 5 minute or less walk to the beach. We setup comfortably on the beach which was clean and groomed. Kids enjoyed boogie board surfing in the waves. At lunch we grabbed pizza and brought back to beach. We did not go to the rides or shopping but there was plenty of both. Great beach day.

Spring Escape

By Patty O'Driscoll |

The month of May was a wonderful time to be at OOB - very quiet, but weather was wonderful. Not every place was open, but I was there for the ocean and not to shop (that is my September trip). Beach was quiet and made for nice peaceful walks along the shore. I Love OOB!

My wife and I love this place!

By Greg Dallas |

We got married by the pier! We come back here every year and it’s always fun. So many memories built here.

Great place for a family

By crabbychick73 |

There is something for everyone here at OOB! Amusements & rides for all, arcades for all, plenty of boardwalk/shops to shop at- make sure to go down the side street to the 9.99 or less store!! The beach is plenty big! And clean-not a rocky water! So many places to eat or go/do!

Too crowded even on a rainy day

By Francesca |

We traveled 30 minutes north to see the sights at Old Orchard Beach. It was way too crowded. There was no place to sit. It was not a safe beach for my 5 year old. I did not let her near the water. It was also very expensive to park there.

Summer Fun

By Jessica L |

A lot of reviews of people posting how it's a waste of time during the off-season...they are right. Don't bother coming here unless you are in the summer season. This place is designed for summer fun. If you're in this area in the fall go look at leaves like the other tourist.

Great beach

By Colleen B |

Great beach, lots to do including carnival rides and shopping. Great places to eat and motels are within walking distance

Lots of cool shops to visit.

By Joe B |

Old Orchard Beach has a lot of shopping, restaurants, and even an Amusement park! Several RV parks nearby, and the beach is right there. Some excellent food choices on the strip too!

Beautiful but a covid nightmare........

By Chelsey |

Poor covid regulations. No one was wearing a mask. There was no social distancing. The beach was beautiful but packed to the max.

Uggh

By FlapjawJr |

Not a lot to see or do here. If this is the only beach town in driving distance with little kids, I could see spending a weekend here. Other than that...

Awesome!

By Donna R |

Old Orchard is a wonderful place to visit. 7 miles of Sandy Beach. This is the only beach we stay on..... just absolutely beautiful there.

Nice beach, lots of activities.

By Bob M |

Lots of activities for couples as well as families. Great shops and restaurants. Clean streets. Lots of benches along the way. Only a few things disappointed me. All the shops and walk up restaurants do not have restrooms, which is fine. But the public restrooms run by the town you must pay to use!
Really? Many states have outlawed this. You would think since your paying that they would be extra nice and clean. NOPE. People sitting there collecting money while place was dirty with no paper towels and blow dryers were all broken. Only place near the beach to change or go to the bathroom.
Also showers to rinse the sand off at the beach were all broken. I will go back as I have for years but do hope that they start taking care of the place. The shops and restaurants do. Now OOB has to step it up.

it was so peace ful.

By danika d |

it was amazing, sometimes a little crowded but that's what you get in a tourist area. It was Awsome.

Quick Visit

By ddavis2017 |

Took a bus to beach area. Very busy area. Beach was packed and dirty. amusements are a money pit. Parking prices are astounding. had dinner at The Bell Bouy and was clean and somewhat price friendly. Won't be going back.

Busy summer atmosphere

By dlman265 |

This beach is hopping on sunny days! Close to the tourist attractions and restaurants making it a complete package.....if you like cold water and warm weather. For those that live south of New England, the water is cold. For those that visit from our northern neighbor, the water is just fine. Each to their own.

Beach

By Liam M |

It’s a nice family beach nice to walk and sit on but don’t expect to do any surfing, the waves are tiny.

Surprisingly Fun

By mainelywandering |

I live in Maine and I’ve always been kind of a beach snob about this place, believing it was “too touristy.” I suppose it is, when compared to a place like Popham Beach, but I visited for the first time today and it was really fun! It is getting late in the season so the weather was cool and there were hardly any lines to go on the amusement park rides. My kids (two teenagers and an 8-year-old) all loved it. It is fun to go on the rides and look out over the beach - just beautiful! The beach is nice and long; it was crowded but not too bad this late in the year. I think this is a nice place to spend a day.

Great spot in September, no crowds.

By Chancent |

We have never spent time here in summer, way to busy for seniors looking for a quieter experience.
Less crowds, a lot of shops closed, ok with us.
Beach is beautiful with lots of rooms and places to stay on the beach.
The Pier has an amusement Park, only open certain days. Check before you go in September.
September doesn't offer a lot for kids, other than the beach.
Will definitely come back in September next year!

Love coming here to kill time

By ashlene |

I love coming here to stroll around a few stores, play a few games in the arcade, and lounge on the beach. I also love that the bus takes you right there for 1.50

Loved this place!

By kelztrip |

Old Orchard Beach is really family friendly! Everywhere we went we felt welcome with the kiddos! The beach was so much fun! It was cold but so refreshing. The lobster need I say more!

Decent time

By JW |

The beach is beautiful. It's condensed, you don't have to walk far for anything. There's tons of stores that all sell the same exact things. We were pretty taken back when one of our children had to use the bathroom. You have to pay .75 a person to go in. There's a person standing outside the bathroom, with the old arcade coin dispenser on their waist, collecting money. Will probably revisit once they are fully up and running. There was many things not open due to staffing.

Take a Pass

By tcgje04 |

Not worth the trip. We paid $10 to park, and there was ample parking. There is one "main" street that takes you to the pier. All the shops are the same, overpriced tourist-y things. Honestly, wish I had read the reviews on Travel Advisor before we went. There is not much to see, the pier looked pretty cool on the website, but just so food places, and some shops. There is a public restroom which needs to be cleaned more often.

Beach friendliness

By makersm |

While walking through the town everyone I passed was gratious and accommodating. They all said hello as I passed them.

Something for everyone

By Alexis H |

Seven miles of sandy beach. Great vacation spot all year. Family friendly. Nature trails, shops, amusement park, mini-golf.

Firt time

By corvette44 |

Like any beach go further North to avoid the crowds, nice beach, had fun, nothing special, long Beach for sure, needed to be cleaned

Old Orchard Beach-A step back in time, yet, it seems timeless!

By jdcBoston_Ma |

I am writing this review to take exception to a few reviews I read regarding OOB. I had never been before, and rode up this past weekend for a few nights.

A few reviewers dumped on the Boardwalk noting cleanliness, a little sleaziness, social standing of the clientele, etc.

I grew up on the Beaches of Long Island, the Boardwalks etc and for me, this was a great experience. The memories of kids screaming on the rides, the giant Cotton Candies, the everything you ever wanted fired foods and more.

This is what Boardwalks are. It 's not the Hampton's, but, it's not Amusement Park Hell by any stretch of the imagination.

I just walked around, up and down the aisles of rides and games, luxuriated in the reminiscing, and can honestly say, I saw nothing disturbing that diminished my enjoyment.

Kids will love this place, adults will spend money, and all will regret what they've consumed, but, if you add that up, it's a fun place to visit.

This is what Boardwalks are!

Parking patrol

By Mississippiking |

Tourist trap, parking is a real, expensive problem. The city knows it and has a fleet of parking patrol that tickets and seemingly hassles tourists. Will not return

Over rated and unsafe

By Erin t |

This town is rundown and crime rates are soaring. All of the hotels are extremely high priced and rundown. The town is not at all family friendly. There’s always drunks and drug addicts walking around town at night harassing people. It is getting increasingly unsafe, it’s too loud and over priced for what they offer. Overall there are plenty of other beach towns to visit before visiting old orchard beach and wasting your money.

Been coming here for years and plan to continue

By USMCRip |

Not sure how many years I and my family have been coming here but it is at least two generations. I like that the beach is great and you can “get away” but should you want something to do you can go to the “pier”. We usually rent away from the pier and walk into the crowd if we get bored.
Love OOB and the beach .
Parking can be an issue if you drive in for say a day but if you are willing to pay to park you can always find a spot.
Bathroom are always an issue and all the public or private one seem inconvenient and are “pay” so be prepared.

This place would have been fun when I was 13 or 14.

By csvernon |

I don’t get how the people of Maine think this a great beach for families. This place is scary at night and I can see why they have 50 police around the area.

SAND, SUN, SURF...AND SNOW!!

By acandkc |

My esteemed spouse and I recently made an impromptu stop to walk the beach one sunny morning. It had snowed like crazy the day before and yet the day was cold and clear and sunny. I recommend walking on this beach..it's a lovely long shoreline that is easily accessible, with a wide beach and certainly not many people in the winter! We watched some brave souls surfing, walked to the amusement park to take pictures of snow covered rides, and enjoyed the salt air and beautiful views..make sure to stop by! Quick note..No restrooms available in the winter.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH, MAINE

By kathyg812020 |

My friends and I take the Downeaster train from North Station, Boston,Ma. To Old Orchard Beach, Maine at least 3 + times a year, it’s only a 2 hour train ride and it only takes less than 5 minutes to the beach. There’s also plenty of parking and parking lots are cheap to park at for the day. If you go after Labor Day of course everything closes down.
The beach is white sand, no rocks, the water is very cold but refreshing and you can walk for miles! The bathrooms are very clean, that’s why you pay .50 to use them, the bathroom where the rides are free but the floor is always wet. Pay the .50 and change in the clean big bathroom!
There’s lots of places to eat, the boardwalk, also shops and rides and games to play and a large arcade. Sorry for some negatives answers but I guess your not a “kid at heart” to have some fun!!’ It has a fairly large amusement park, been there for years as my parents always brought us up there and I still go. In the evening it can get chilly!

A 1

By Randy L |

If you haven't been to Old Orchard, you should. A wonderful, iconic, clean beach where you can walk for miles. There are tons of activities close by to satisfy everyone's tastes whether young, old or in between. In addition, there all lots & lots of excellent places to eat for all kinds of appetites.

Very good considering the pandemic.

By Dakota |

We were there just after Labor Day and it was empty. Nothing was open but you could walk on the beach. The tide was out so it made for a nice walk.

A good vacation

By Amt566 |

10 of us came down for the long weekend and had a great time. Everything was perfect from the shopping to fun town/ slash town. Unfortunately we were there when thousands and thousands of dead fish washed up on shore. It put a damper on our beach day, when we tried to swim you could see them floating all around you. I really hope they stop allowing fishing vessels to dump dead fish in front of the beach :(. (That is what the news says happened). We still plan on going back though, it was so great! I can't wait for next year! Just don't eat at Hooligans!

Busy!

By Angelize1999 |

This beach was crazy busy the Sunday we were there. We didn't venture to the park or the boardwalk. Had to pay for parking down the street ($10 in someone's lawn) Not sure I'd go back. Could not find anywhere for my son to change into dry clothes. Had to pay .50 to use the toilet. I felt kind of like I was in a 3rd world country. The beach is dirty.. it isn't fine sand like other beaches. Went once, that was enough.

Quaint Beach Town

By Kim B |

When planning our trip to Maine one of the things at the top of my list to see was the Old Orchard Beach Pier. I'm a beach girl at heart so seeing this historic pier was something I thought about in the 6 months leading up to our trip, however I failed to take into consideration that in October it would be closed. Alas, what I had envisioned was not to be but it was still cool to see it, albeit right before and after a N'oreaster. The beach was covered with clam shells as large as cantaloupes and beachcombers passing by told us that they are some of the tastiest clams around. The town was pretty much a ghost town but if u closed my eyes I could just imagine what it would look like in the summer time. I was kind of surprised to see an Amtrak roll through town, less than 200 feet from the beach though, nothing I've ever seen on the Delmarva shore. Hoping to one day experience the history of this place in the summer.

Great Big Beach

By Anne Louise B |

Usually go behind our motel, The Crest Motel to the beach, but love watching the beach area in the center of town.

Not So Charming Beach Town

By Patricia Wakefield |

I had such high expectations for Old Orchard Beach. The pics online are nostalgic and charming. The beach is nice but there are no bathrooms nearby so be prepared for a walk. All of the food tastes the same; greasy bar food and most menus are the same. The carnival is beautiful lit up at night so that is a plus. I’m glad I came once but would not return again nor would I recommend it to anyone. The locals are very nice but if you want to experience the beautiful side of Maine, don’t stay here.

LOVE

Best beach!! Super spacious at this time and not many crowds in mid september. the arcade was so fun for two adventurous adults and the entire experience was perfectly peaceful

By William R |

Cool old pier with lots of little shops. Nice looking beach but SUPER crowded. The fries from Pier French Fries are really good. Shops are just ok. The mini doughnut vendor is super tasty.

Great Family Beach

By Laiz M |

Perfect for family, snack bar, kids activities, and bathroom in walk distance. Very nice people and reasonable price.

In Walking distance

By rburbank2016 |

The center is full of shops, places to eat, live music. All within walking distances of hotels/motels

An (almost) abandoned wonderland.

By NHjo |

Just about everything is closed now except for a few motels, shops, and a pizza stand or two. The weather's been very warm for October and even November, so there are still tourists. About two or three year-round restaurants are open. The pier is closed but is still a pretty sight, and you can see astounding, colorful sunrises from the beach this time of year.

A mix of sketchy people and nice beach

By Ironhorse70 |

The downtown area on a Saturday is choc full of sketchy people roaming the streets, cheap eats, lots of cigarette smoke and tourists. We traveled here for the first time with our three young children last week and were relieved that the condo complex were we had rented a unit for the week was secluded and had the feeling of a world apart from this area. The beaches are nice, but better the farther one is from the downtown area. Would not feel comfortable with my wife, let alone my children, walking around the downtown area alone at night. Will not come here again and would not recommend to others.

Vacation

By tami l |

If you like crowds you'll like old orchard beach,,, . No bathrooms,, oh there is one bathroom at the end of the pier,, but you have to pay. If you have children they do have a arcade.

Blah!

By Ed S |

If you like the stereotypical Jersey Shore characters, only a couple of hundred miles north, “I love boobs” T shirts galore, drunken obscenities spewed from random comic book villain looking guys and gals with 4 packs a day Marlboro Red habit, loud motorcycles, tacky, cheap trinket pushing stores and obnoxious rides - well then, you’ve found the place for you.

Free Fun

By Lois R |

Very nice to chill and relax. Bring your own food and drinks...stay under the warm sun and enjoy people watching. Place is very accessible to the Train Station too if you are coming from Boston. Lots of restos nearby and hotels. A theme park with the arcade would make you feel like a kid again. Once of the cons is that the water in the beach is a little chilly & hard to find a clean/free restroom/shower room.

Was not impressed

By Charlie |

I was not impressed. I felt this town was just dirty and not very well kept. Will never come back to this place

Nice place to relax

By Jan C |

We went for a long weekend - trying to get a little relaxing by the ocean in with all this crazy year has brought. Old Orchard was nice - busy, but most people were adhering to the cover-19 rules. Not everything was open - but OOB still offered a great relaxing time.

Stay away if you care about social distancing and folks wearing masks

By Ruth M |

We stopped by on our way to our Glamping sure and didn’t even get out of the car. Crowds and no on who wasn’t an employee was wearing masks nor social distancing. Not a great option for those of us attempting to social distance and teach our kids responsible travel. We did stop by an awesome farm stand for fresh fruit.

Run Down

By 942bob |

Very disappointed. Run down town, no boardwalk, dismal. We obviously made a mistake in coming here. Staying at local KOA, which was great, and visited other nearby beaches, which were also great, but this town -- why can't someone do something about it. It could be so nice!

7 miles of beautiful beach!

By Diane E 165 |

Spent a wonderful weekend in Old Orchard Beach with my sister Joey. We stayed at the gem of hotel - The Beach House and were spoiled by the co managers and co-hosts, Darryl and Angela.
The Beach is 7 miles of beautiful sandy beach. My sister is a photographer and took wonderful pictures - sunrise, sunset, waves, etc.

Beautiful beach

By Janice O |

I was so pleased with OOB and the gorgeous beach set in a cove. Easy walking on flat sand. Lovely homes and neighborhoods on both sides of the center. Thoroughly enjoyed this lovely place.

Great get away in early Spring

By yanks105 |

We had so much fun on the long weekend in OOB . This is the ideal place after a long cold winter . Great places to eat . A beautiful beach and the smell and sound of the surf .

A classic New England beach experience

By Donna B |

Like another recent reviewer, after returning from my annual pilgrimage I must speak a word for OOB and its beautiful beachfront. This isn't a fancy place, it's just a good old-fashioned, honky-tonk seaside town. If Kennebunk or Bar Harbor are strictly your cup of tea, this won't be. We won't miss you! Otherwise, look for lodgings a bit further away from the pier, in the direction of either Pine Point or Ocean Park, for a quieter experience. And the reviewer expressing concern about Canadian visitors getting a bad impression might want to read up on OOB history -- our Quebecois neighbors have been visiting and loving this place for a very long time!

Rip-offsville

By Paula R |

We were heading up the coast to Acadia National Park, and decided to stop in at the famous Old Orchard Beach. We only had a couple of hours, so parked 10 mins from the center and walked in rather than pay $20 for the day in one of the parking lots. It was the day after Labor Day, and lots of the stores and restaurants were shut. We headed to the Dolce Crema Caffe, but needed a restroom before eating. They had no restrooms, and directed us 50yd back along the road to the public restrooms, where you had to pay 50c to use the facilities. I would expect to pay that amount in London! To make it worse, the restrooms were smelly and poorly kept, and the hand dryers didn't work. You were expected to drip your way out to the attendant, who had a pile of hand towels weighed down with a rock that she was guarding like a Rottweiler.
Lunch at the Dolce Crema was okay, but the attractions were all closed as were half the shops. I would have been bitterly disappointed if I had paid the extortionate price for parking in a lot. No water fountains anywhere along the main drag or beach- presumably so they could screw you for fluid in as well as fluid out.
If I wanted to get ripped off like this I would have stayed in rip-off Britain. I would never bother to stop here again.

Very crowded, no one was wearing masks

By Mary Ann S |

I would never return to this beach. It was dirty and overcrowded. The sand is not white and it honky took.

A very pleasant place to visit

By Elaine W |

We always come early in the year so are not here at the peak season. But, that being said, we always find plenty to do and see among the locals. Definitely recommend!

It gets old quick

By Jessica D |

We go on vacation here every single summer for a WEEK with my husbands entire family. It's gets old really fast. A weekend is the perfect amount of time here. A week is far too long. The rides get old & boring after awhile, you're stuck with the same places to eat that all serve the exact same thing. The beach is nice, the streets are kind of dirty.

Great trip every summer.

By Holly @ LoveAtFirstSite.blog |

Always packed but always fun. People come from all over to visit this beach. It's beautiful sand. The shape of the beach causes great waves for boogie boarding which is very popular. While the beach is always packed, people keep to themselves and a good time can be had. We got here at least once every summer.

Beautiful Beach

By Tammy O |

The beach was beautiful! I loved how far out it went at low tide! It was great to walk in the morning! We did other things but the beach looked fairly crowded stretching out either way from the pier.

Very clean beach!

By Chuck52310 |

Old Orchard Beach is a mere shadow of what it was back in the 1930s-1960s. But the beach is one of the cleanest anywhere. Parking is reasonable. There has been a recent expansion of the amusement area. Try Pier Fries and Bill's Pizza for food. Those two have been at the beach for half a century and then some!

Fun!

By kcampaiola1995 |

Went the weekend before Memorial Day weekend. Parking at George’s was only $5 and they had restrooms. The beach wasn’t too crowded!

Love the beach!

By MicheleinMaine12 |

Loved the beach. We went before 10 am so the dog could go on the beach. Not too crowded, everyone kept their distance. Wonderful, long beach with a long shallow sand bar that you can walk in the water. I wish we could go back again sometime. I am sure it gets crowded during a regular season. Pretty quiet due to Covid.

Train horns + sleeping babies = bad vacation spot

By Erin W |

We are renting a house near the beach, and this place has a lot going for it but there is a train that runs the length of the beach. It sounds the horn for the whole length of the beach. It woke up my babies during the night and again before 5am every day. Perhaps you could invest in technology like the rest of the country, Downeaster Train. Peace out, OOB, we won’t be back. #cantwaittobehome

Off season visit

By Chemorn |

Enjoyable visit for the day. It was off season was it wasn’t crowded at all. I’m sure during season this place can get crazy. Typical beach community, lots of souvenir shops, beach shops, food stands. Public restroom. Parking lots that offer restroom and showers. On street parking options as well. The beach itself was clean. Average waves. Enjoyed watching the dogs having fun as well.

Your place for techno 24/7, stepping on butts, drunk food, etc.

By Ross M |

I admittedly didn’t read reviews on this place prior to coming here. My amazing wife came here as a kid with her family years ago and loved it. She wanted to give that experience to her family. Not the case now. This place is filthy dirty. The hotel I stayed in is great. One of the best I’ve been in. Grand Victorian. Don’t be too quick to look up prices for this hotel. Food at every single restaurant was $150.00 for 3 adults and toddler. I understand this time of year is expensive. I’d be ok with paying that if the food wasn’t disgusting. The best way to sum up the food….drunk food. Sloppy, disgustingly drunk food that tastes great when sloppy, fall-over hammered, but looks and tastes horrible when sober. I was shocked. It was so bad we had to leave town to eat. The beach; the beach was filthy. Cigarette butts everywhere. Lots of smoking everywhere. The carnival was nice for the little one but it is a carnival. Don’t have to say much more about that. The biggest issue was the Pier. The club at the end of the Pier plays the worst kind of music (house techno) all day and they crank it up baby!! Until 2:00 am. All I heard every night was that and the train screaming and honking by. No tranquility what so ever at this place. Again, my fault for not reading into this place more. I hope this review helps make your decision. If you love to be hammered, eat terrible food, step on butts, and hang out at a run down carnival, and dance to heavy beat, techno all night from your hotel room, this is your place. If you want any peace and quiet, stay far away.

Great for a Family Beach Day

By Katy |

Old Orchard Beach is your typical tourist beach area. The main drag is lined with souvenir shops, quick bites, and enough entertainment for the family. We just stopped by for a lobster roll on the beach and we found just what we were looking for! We found parking at a meter easily and walked around the area. Lots of families and activities going on. Would recommend if you're looking for a lively beach day.

Typical beach/boardwalk

By daniellessss |

out of our whole trip (nyc, bar harbor, portland and salem), this was my least fav stop. Fun to check out, but nothing special in my opinion.

Pier old orchard beach

By Debra L |

Very disappointed.I’ve heard so much about this place . Dirty unkept along the pier everything looked just run down. Never again. Locals even say don’t go. I should have went up to Portland.

Disappointed

By Sheylah C |

“Family friendly” is aka for dirty, rundown and trashy. First and last time We ever go here. So disappointing! I wish people would just throw their trash in trash cans and not on the beach, road etc. And should definitely be nonsmoking as people cannot clean up after their cigarette butts.

Stayed for a week in a quaint oceanfront cottage ...Was Fantastic!

By paintmeadream |

Our family of 6 & our dog, stayed in a quaint private oceanfront cottage for a week. Although the water is cold, the beach is fabulous to walk, play games & sunbathe. The beach is dog friendly as well. We had a couple lobster bakes on the beach. We purchased the live lobsters & clams down the road at The Bait Shed about 1.5 miles from our cottage. Sunrises are fabulous and we enjoyed bonfires on the beach in the evening. Everybody had a great time!

Love this beach

By catwmn2xVT |

Love this beach... just before it gets busy at OOB. Sand is coarse and cool to the feet, feels so good. Visit before everyone arrives for most relaxation.

Very nice public beach

By Traveloraptor |

Lots of space, also lots of people at high season. Water is a bit cold, but kids don't seem to mind. Some public toilettes ($0.50) on street nearby or at Play Palace for free.

Family fun

By SMD5SMD |

Lots of nice and clean/neat rides. Plenty of food choices at stands and a few good restaurants too. Walking distance from most hotels/motels.

One of our favorite places

By Tricia B |

Love the beach. We visit multiple times a year. Always enjoy ourselves there. The only thing is to use the bath house you need to pay a quarter. Which is okay, just stinks of you've never been there.

Blah.

By Jen R |

The beach is beautiful, but the rest is just parking lots and fried food. Crossing this place off my list.

Run down, tacky, dated, expensive, tourist rap

By GLM2016 |

First, it IS a beach town, which is only open "during the season", for the most part.
Second, it IS dated and tacky.
Third, it is VERY expensive, unless you're able to find the hidden gems of specials or promotional offers.
Fourth, parking meters are enforced until 11 PM, and the enforcement is vigorous and merciless.
Fifth, totally capitalize on tourists. Every major stereotype related to beach tourist destinations applies...I will let you fill this is yourselves. One example...there are NO public restrooms. God forbid you have to use the bathroom, you must PAY for the privilege. There is a monitor stationed at the door, collecting money before you will be allowed access to the restroom. This is the ultimate rip-off among hundreds.
And, on one occasion, I saw a man in his 50's, carrying a pistol in an open holster, displayed for all the world to see, within feet of families with small children. When I reported this to the lifeguards, they told me he was entirely within his rights if it wasn't concealed. Definitely NOT my idea of a family beach environment.

It is Maine, after all, so the water at the beach is FRIGID cold. The sand was not too bad, but at high tide, the beach dwindles down to a very small strip of land and it gets VERY crowded and cramped.

We stayed at a facility which was well-maintained, but GESTAPO-like rules were listed at several locations on the property. It seemed like overkill to me but perhaps given the variety and volume of visitors, it was necessary.
The facility advertised an "indoor pool". By no one's vivid stretch of their imagination could this be honestly referred to as a pool. It was VERY VERY small. Realistically only usable by the smallest of children, and without a lifeguard.

If you're looking for good food, go out of town, or buy it at the markets and cook it where you stay. Otherwise, be prepared to need a second mortgage on the house.

I am certain that Maine has many great places to visit, and even with a cursory investment of time on the Internet they would be easily discovered.

Save your money, go elsewhere.

Glad I saw it!

By sanka65 |

We went into a couple of shops looking for a kid's t. shirt. They had very very little for a 6 year old. The view of the beach was great. The beach was pure chaos and we could see the two lifeguards who were on their tall chair busy with their phones and not paying attention to the swimmers. Not good.

Need's some retro OOB brought back

By Guide698316 |

Growing up over at Hills Beach always meant Friday night trips to OOB for some fun, especially the entire area surrounding The Pier! It has really gone down hill in that respect and the children today are missing wonderful things that gave us great memories. The Pier is not entertaining for children at all. In fact, barely entertaining for adults. The Pier, for those that did not know, was way longer and at the end was great fun for the family. After the fire, it was never brought back. Now, just a bar with marginal food served is there and retail stands lining the way...not great! At the entrance to The Pier once was very entertaining attractions for all, especially the kids! Something should be done to bring that kind of "heart beat" back.

Great as always

By ChrisHall14 |

One of the things that is an absolute terrible thing about visiting this beach is having to pay to use the restrooms. Terrible. Help keep the beach clean and eliminate this charge.

Less hustle and bustle

By jrdec |

Quiet older beach town. Relaxed without the hustle and bustle. No frills which is fine for just a relaxing day by a beach.

Great beach

By george b |

I’ve been going to Old Orchard beach for many years and it’s one of my favorites. It definitely has the feel of an old east coast resort town with amusement rides, and plenty of restaurants and older style hotels. Used to do lots of business with Canadian tourist, however Covid has changed that. One major complaint is the lack of public restrooms near the beach. There is only one and it is back on the Main Street and not convenient for anyone. Worse, they charge for it. Because of their lack of facilities, all businesses have big signs saying no public restrooms. They used to have restrooms right on the beach. They attract 100,000of thousand visitors a year, they can afford a restroom.

Very touristy!!

By jlb412015 |

It is a beautiful beach, however, it is such a tourist trap!!! There are souvenir shops everywhere and the food isn't really all that great - a little too pricey. I would rather go to Wells Beach or Kennebunkport beaches or York Beach. It is too bad because it was such a fun place to go to when I was a kid but it has gotten too touristy and the people here are very rude!!

greatest beach

By sand-mich |

We are from Germany and keep coming back to this place for years. The beach is fantastic and there are so many different places where you can stay - from campgrounds to beach houses, motels or bed and breakfasts. Yes, it IS touristy but it is also a place where we always get a very warm welcome and meet a lot of friendly people! It's ideal for families: The beach is huge and the water usually not too cold. We used to walk for hours along the ocean, collecting all the things the ocean washes up.
There are a lot of places to eat and you can make a lot of trips up and down the coast and explore the beautiful Maine coast. Kittery is not far away and Portland is always worth a trip. You can visit the Portland Children's Museum there when the weather is bad or the Maine Mall. Freeport is near and if you want to go to Camden - it's not too far for a one or two day trip. If you want peace and quiet it's not for you (in the summer) but WE love OOB!

Great Place

By valeriep69424 |

OOB is a very busy place in summer months. Beach is great. It is groomed nightly of trash left behind by jerks! Fireworks every Thurs. Palace Playplace open daily. Wide variety of food & prices throughout town. Enjoy your stay!

NOTHING IS OPEN AFTER LABOR DAY

By Iris981 |

Be warned when planning your fall trip to the north eat coast. The shops and restaurants were closed, but none of their facebook or Google listings reflected it. Spent a lot of time wandering around, researching online, and making calls just to find somewhere to eat. The beach was nice, but the whole town had a run-down carnival vibe to it.

Gazing at the open ocean

By David R |

We walked the beach during the month of March 2023. It felt great to see this great beach overlooking the open ocean. I highly recommend stopping.

Changed for the worst

By Judy B |

Came here every summer when was a kid. Stopped in a couple weeks ago while in the area. Dirty, loud, crowded and people were rude. It’s Trump city now. No thanks.

Great Beach Great Town

By megerdahl2012 |

Great beach for family and friends to get together and see the beauty of our earth as well as enjoying a great family time together and seeing the pure in the beautiful homes that surround was absolutely amazing this place is beautiful and definitely a place to go again .

A good place to visit in the off season

By 915gailb |

My sister and I enjoyed staying at the Sea Cliff House Motel. The price was right, and we could walk to the beach. We had several delicious breakfasts at the Good Thyme Cafe and won two out of three jackpots at local Bingo games.

Too Crowded

By WCC58 |

This was just not our vibe. Carnie atmosphere… very crowded. We booked a local Inn and the pictures were much better than the reality. Ended up moving on without checking in…Like the Jersey Shore and Panama City beach on steroids.

OOB

By Danielle H |

The beach is nice. Language barrier but you manage. The weather was cloudy so not great beach days, lots of fog for most of the days...

A real nice fun beach

By Rose F |

we visited old orchard beach and had a wonderful time. The stores around this beach are extremely reasonable. We parked our car for $10.00 for the day and the gentleman there was so nice. I would recommend this beach in a heartbeat. Have Fun !!!

Great vacation!

By Jason and Kristen |

Old Orchard beach was amazing! I understand that some reviews have mentioned issues like "Trashy", "Old", "Down Hill", but I don't see it that way. The town is nostalgic and set up like a old time beach town, but in our opinion thats what makes it so special. We are in our 30's and enjoyed everything from the breakfasts on the pier to the laying on the beach. There are dozens of gift shops that have very reasonable prices. The food was amazing. We also felt safe the entire time. We look forward to bringing the entire family next year. Great Trip!!!

Beautiful! BUT, too crowded on the beach!

By Kara J |

I loved the feel of the beach, the view, the rocks, BUT it was so crowded! We got to the beach early (9:30am?) and it was packed. People must know to come early to mark your territory - we ended up surrounded by people and had no view. The worse part is that I couldn't sit, relax and watch my kids play by the water. I need to have a view of my kids!

I really wish we could have enjoyed it more - but a beach with crowds like that isn't my cup of tea.

Another fun time at OOB

By Guy5702 |

My wife and I spent 5 nights at The Edgewater motel and enjoyed ourselves as always. We ate pizza on the pier and bought our caramel corn too. The weather was perfect most days. Our only negative was the water wasn’t as clean as usual. There was lots of seaweed and red particles.

Clean beach

By Joanne H |

Stayed at a campground close to beach. Parking rates are crazy at the meters. The lots vary depending on the day $10-$20. The beach is well maintained and clean. Waves are decent for boogie boarding.

Fun for everyone

By Christina |

We come here every summer as a tradition there is so much to do! We love the rides and food! I always get my kids an all day pass for unlimited rides it makes the most sense it's like $35 not too bad.

I think it's pretty lame though that you have to pay 50 cents to use the restrooms there and on the pier and they smell horrid and are not clean.

There is meter parking $2 per hour max two hours. There are also paid parking lots.

Smells like Marijuana everywhere you go now

By GIUSEPPE G |

I was at OOB TODAY,Jul 21 '18, for the first time this summer[been going every summer for 30 years].
Everywhere you go now smells like marijuana, especially including walking around outside. Extremely offensive. I am not alone;Just checked Maine Stats; 49.7% of Maine people voted not to legalize marijuana in Maine.

Will never go back to OOB again.

Great beach, no restrooms.

By george b |

Old Orchard is a great clean and Long Beach. You can walk for miles. There are very convenient restaurants and amusement. The real problem a the lack of public restrooms close to the beach. There is a pay restroom a good distance from the beach. There are tons of businesses in the beach area. What would it take to build some sort of facility. York beach is much smaller and has a beautiful free restroom.

nice flat beach on maine coast

By suef2010 |

went for a day to visit a friend- the beach/sand was very nice as we sat at a beach in front of their condo on the beach. only issue was this brown gross seaweed invasion so we could not/would not go in the water. this seaweed was sticky and smelly. oob was itself lovely. ate lobster rolls at the lobster shack outside, looking at men clamming. it was very easy to get to oob, but parking would be a real issue had our friends not had a space for us.

Old park. Visited for the car show. Loved the beachy vibe of the boardwalk pier. Shame several businesses are closed.

By Muthrteresa |

Neat old beach town. Cool vibe. Loved the rides near the ocean. Great place to make some awesome memories! Would love to spend more time here.

Carnival themed

By prepper |

This is really a review of the amusement area by the beach (Palace Playland)- This area is sort of like Venice Beach in California adding in a theme park (but much better!). There were tons of souvenir stores and restaurants and hotels. Most stores were open until 11 pm when we were there on a Saturday night. The area was packed and alot of fun! There was alot to do and see. This whole area is just behind the beach area. A must if you are in the area!!

Mixed Review

By Julie M |

The beach is nothing short of amazing. Beautiful sand and clean!!!! If you want the carnival experience, then stay by the pier. Very busy and loud and dirty. If you want the beach experience, stay down the beach South of the pier. Lots of families and quieter.

So so beach.

By Joseph L |

My wife and I went there for a day trip, and we're not impressed. It's a typical summer beach that was crowded. There's not a lot of things to do.

VACATION

By Joseph W |

I love Old Orchard Beach Maine because I have been going up there for over 20 years or more and they treat you like real family no matter what they have to do

So awful, I wanted to end my trip to Maine

By Gwendolyn B |

Please update websites. We have our dog and 2 cats in our RV. We stayed at Pinehirst Campground. They seemed baffled that we were coming even though I had a confirmation of my reservation. Check in was at 3:00 and I was told I was lucky they were still there to check me in at 3:06. I was made to feel like an outsider. I used Bring Fido to check for pet friendly restaurants. I found several and after 1.5 hours of walking found none of them to be accommodating to pets. Not pretty where we stayed, and not welcomed where we tried to eat despite checking websites. Very disappointing. I get that it is after Labor Day, but that doesn't mean a town shouldn't welcome guests.

Crowded, Dirty, and Low Class People

By Parker |

First and last time for my family and I. We were expecting so much more from a Maine beach! Crowded, dirty, and low class people. Plus, don’t get me started with our overpriced, closet sized, run down condo. We decided to visit the outskirts instead of wasting the whole week there. Our usual summer vacation is at a beautiful family beach in SC but due to Covid we thought we would be safe in Maine. Not many people wearing masks and there was no social distancing. We probably would have been better off in SC! Very disappointed in OOB. My advice is to stay away from this beach and area.

It's an experience!

By NHjo |

As locals who live a few miles away, we come to the amusement park area a few times during tourist season to people-watch, enjoy a cocktail or a slice of pizza, and just soak in the honky-tonk atmosphere. The historic pier and carousel are wonderful sights, and the beach is very clean. The restaurants aren't the best (you need to go to Portland or Biddeford for that), but the typical fast food offerings are good. It's a nostalgic place for people who grew up around the area and came here as kids. It's the only beachfront amusement park in New England. Everything basically shuts down during the other seasons, and even the town itself is very quiet.

No longer a biker beach, but a great food beach, ahidden gem

By big25zee |

I have been visiting O.O.B for well over 20 years and I've seen it change from a honky tonk beach to a world class beach. It can be a day trip from Mass.,but it's more relaxing to stay there and leisurely eat t one of many dining spots. It's clientele has aged but there still is a draw for families with the Arcade and amusements. A number of different bars support a healthy night life and the wide stretch of beach and the length leaves plenty of room. The takeout food at the beach is the best in New England.

Busy beach

By Rachel H |

Came here for the 4th of July. The firework show on the best was the best firework show I’ve ever seen. Over 15 minutes of non stop awesome fireworks. I was in awe! The beach itself on a holiday is insane. Very busy, don’t think I would come to OOB and the beach again. Great for families if you are willing to endure the crowds. There are other beaches in the area that are quieter and much more enjoyable.

Old Orchard Beach

By diabolicflame93 |

I would caution people that bathrooms are a rarity. There are no public bathrooms or rinse off areas. If you do need a restroom or changing area expect to pay $0.50 - $3 to use one. The beach is beautiful and clean, but a bit overcrowded for me.

A Great beach to walk and swim

By Stephen D |

I've been coming to Old Orchard Beach since I was a child. The Pier is still there, as is the ferris wheel. The beach is one of the best to walk on -especially at low tide, year-round. Its good to swim in when the water is warm (July to September) and wonderful to relax and sun on.

Great for families with kids/teens on a bit of a budget.

By ld_be_all_like |

For a beach community, Old Orchard is not the cleanest or prettiest, I'll give you that. However, we have 2 teenage girls and if we took them to a really nice beach area for a week-long vacation, they'd be going out of their minds with boredom, and worse, driving us crazy. OOB is good for the money, beach is perfectly fine, plenty of delicious, bad-for-you food that tastes pretty stellar when you don't indulge in fried food all that often, plenty of restaurants to choose from, rides and games for the kids, and all of this concentrated in one walkable area. If you don't want to pay for parking every single day, book early and stay on the main drag with plenty of motels to choose from. We stayed in Saco at the Hampton Inn and made the 10 minute drive everyday, because the motels can be a bit run-down, being older and right on the beach. But we've stayed at the motels on the beach before too without our kids and it was a different experience being right on the beach. I enjoy doing it both ways.

OOB is the Best

By semperfi80 |

Best beach in Maine. Great place for vacation and family fun. Gray for families with children young and old. Be sure to visit Palace Playland and enjoy the fireworks on Thursday night.

Fun and Interesting

By dianamackiewicz |

Very nice old carousel, beautiful animals to ride. Ferris wheel is lit up at night. Signs in English and French, many visitors from Quebec

Fun weekend if the hotel wasn't so dirty

By Louise Willow |

Loved the town. Was fun. The Seagrass Inn though is using untrained "day-labor" during the pandemic and that is scary. Will be reporting to the state, but the town itself was great.

First Time and Not the Last

By Leslie M |

We had never been to Old Orchard Beach but had always heard about it. We were there for the 70.3 Iron Man Race. We had gelato, breakfast and visited the many stores and arcades. We found it to be very clean and all of the shop and restaurant people were very friendly. We went to the beach beside the pier that was staffed by lifeguards and dipped our toes into the 65 degree water. We walked thru the rides section but did not ride any of the rides. However all their rides looked inviting and well kept up. There are walk up food stands as well as sit down restaurants. There are several hotels and motels that are available for longer stays. We even visited the public restrooms and were very pleasantly surprised to see how clean they were. Now you do have to pay 50 cents to use the public restroom, but believe me that you will be very pleased with the condition of them. Old Orchard Beach is a throwback to earlier times at the seashore. It was established in 1883 and if you are looking for a good time at the ocean front then come to OOB.

Fun beach resort town

By votfinoski |

Ride through Old Orchard Beach and it is a great summer spot on the Atlantic Ocean. Many wonderful motels and souvenier shops along the beach as well. Great summer spot but very crowded.

so much family fun!

By Elisa2k19 |

we had the best time, lobster rolls, ice cream, sand dollars and roller coasters. prices were reasonable all around!

Very busy not a nice beach

By Tennhold |

The beach was so busy, the water was full of floating sea weed, huge drop off in the water so not good for small children. Wouldn’t recommend this beach for a family outing

Let me drink on the beach

By Nate D |

Pretty beach but I was drinking a white claw and they made me dump it out… on the beach… wouldn’t you rather me drink it than dump it on the beach? Doesn’t make sense. I should have said no laws when you’re drinking the claws. I would rather enjoy the beach with a drink in my hand.

Definite Atlantic City vibe

By Lacey b |

The good: beach was empty in the off season so you have a lot of room to yourself. Chilly but do-able with a warm jacket. The beach is big but no shells. Good to walk.

What I wish I knew before I went:
It has an Atlantic City vibe to it for sure. Nothing was open (which actually I wasn't mad about since I probably wouldn't have eaten there anyway) It seemed it's glory days have definitely past. Lots of cigarette butts in the sand. Kept looking over my shoulder and didn't want to walk around alone at night. Would not stay here again, seems like the dumpy area which is a shame because the natural beach is pretty.

OOB- Great place for a beach vacation

By Nick S |

OOB- great seashore vaation spot, great beaches, food, lodgings, friendly, what more can I say. Oh yes, don't forget to get some steamed lobsters, yum!

OOB the place to see!

By SkiskiPete |

If you love the beach then Old Orchard Beach is the place to visit especially for vacationers from the North East. We come here at least once every year & usually in the off seasons. Walking on the super long stretch of beach is such a pleasure! The sand is clean and well maintained. The people here are very friendly. You must have at least 1 meal at Yellowfin’s Restaurant. If you can get accommodations right on the beach you will have the extra soothing sounds of the ocean!

Food and Shopping

By forteo1 |

Not slot to do in the evening with teens on vacation in southern Maine. Old Orchard beach and a nice shopping area with many food options. Lots of activity and live music. Fun for the family. Would have given 5 stars but they do not allow dogs on the main shopping area.

Beach was not clean

By ELMny |

Water was full of seaweed, which is naturally occurring. But the sand was full of trash and especially cigarette butts. Seagulls are some of the most daring, and if your child has any piece of food waving in hand or if you leave unattended for a second, then its total frenzy. Not my favorite beach for sure

You live here?

By Mike N |

I've been asked this many times especially during the summer. Believe it or not, people actually live in OOB all year. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of fun activities to do including the beautiful beach, the Pier, lots of shops and of course Palace Playland with the new roller coaster. One of my favorites it to sit and just people watch in the square, I'm always surprised by something?? The car show in September is one of my favorites, and if you love cars this year's show had over 400+ cars. One of the highlights is the Friday night parade with police escort. During the off season it can be tough living down here. It gets really quiet, not much is open and to be honest the street are not plowed that great with the snow storms. But, it can be serene and walks on the beach after a snow storm are pretty darn cool. If you've not visited, come check it out. There is never shortage of things to do in summer and make sure not to miss the free Thursday night fireworks weekly. Fall and winter aren't bad either, but you better bundle up and be prepared to walk for a while without passing to many others.

I am going home to shower after visiting

By seriochapmanfamily |

If I could give zero stars I would. Dirty and trashy. Looks like the only people who are there came from a Walmart. Not many people with dental insurance. Looks like a carnival town. They charge you .75 to use the bathroom here. Stay Away.

Love this place, ocean breeze is like no other

By tammymoquet |

This is one of my childhood hangout, love the smell of the Atlantic Ocean, the Pier brings back memories of my childhood hangout, fun times, good times, recommend it to anyone who loves the northeast ocean

Delightful village!

By Billie77077 |

This is a delightful village to visit, especially if you like the beach after the high season. The rides on the pier were closed but the restaurants were open as well as the shops.

Same

By Lord W |

Was here 40 years ago, same now, only thing way, way, more expensive. Beach clean great sandy beach, no trash! Spent two beautiful sunny days on it. Tides are very high, water burr cold, when tide goes out, you can feel the water somewhat warmer. All in all 100%, come enjoy make memories.

Great Iron Man weekend

By Dan R |

Old Orchard Beach was a great place to hold this event as there are lots to do for every age group after the Iron Man race. The beach, lots of restaurants, amusement park for the kids etc. The beach was a very relaxing place to go and it wasn't very crowded.
