Thought we'd see some beautiful coastline heading from Coos Bay up the coast but felt like we were back in a forest most of the time with trees on both sides of the road. When it did open up, we saw some beautiful rock formations, etc., just not what we expected.

My husband and I spent a week or so on the coast. I could have easily spent 3 or more, just wandering around and making lots of stops. Cape Perpetua and Cannon Beach were some highlights. Make sure to check the tide tables so you don't miss out on the tide pools!!

Loved travelling the coast on our way back from California. It is a must do if you are in this area. There is so much to do and see. We did a lot of hiking, walking along the beaches and exploring the many little towns along the way. We only had 3 days here but we will for sure be back. Very friendly area. We where there in early Aug. Was not to busy. We at the Salishan resort Oregon Coast. Was beautiful and a must stay.

My friend and I absolutely LOVED this trip down the 101. We could only go down to Newport. I wish we had time to continue down to Seal Rock and Coos bay. The stops we really enjoyed were the beach boardwalk at Seaside, the dock at Garibaldi, the Tillamook cheese factory, then we spent two days in Newport and Depot Bay.

We drove down the 101 from Cannon Beach to Tillamook/Oceanside (took about an hour) and the drive was absolutely stunning! We stopped at a few viewpoints in Oswald State Park and got out to explore Short Sands Beach (aka Smugglers Cove), which I highly recommend. Highly recommend!

I have never in my life seen anything so beautiful then the Oregon coast. The drive was so beautiful and there are so many places to stop and see and the jagged cliffs and the beautiful Pacific Ocean is just gorgeous. We live in Florida and we have beautiful water but seeing big rocks emerging out of the ocean is pretty spectacular. This trip is a must to see. We are already making plans to go back

We have traveled the Oregon coast a few times and it is gorgeous! The water is cold but the beaches are gorgeous. We love Bandon, Seaside, and Astoria. Many places to stop and the views are wonderful even from the car!

Around every corner is the Pacific Ocean with amazing scenic views almost everywhere. The ocean, rivers, bays, hills, forests and quirky towns are in abundance. There are numerous viewing points and state parks along the way. The difficulty is decided what not to see!! Plenty of bed and breakfast and hotel/motel accommodation to choose from. Friendly folk along the way and plenty of tourist information centres. Put it on your bucket list!

We started in Portland and made our way as far south as Florence before we ran out of time. We absolutely amazing with our chins dropping at each viewpoint. It was absolutely worth the effort and time and although weâve seen many coastlines world wide - Oregon takes the cake!

I've travelled this whole road from the south right up to the border with Canada, and I have to say the Oregon stretch is just the best, no crawling behind motor homes, no tacky beaches, no overpriced and under quality roadside stopping places and plenty of opportunities for deserted beaches, interesting towns, places to stay and its easy relaxed traveling. If you want bustle, then it has that, if you want a sleepy harbour town, forests, majestic dunes that go for miles then this is the road to take. Plenty of side trips to inland towns, vineyards, farm produce and cheese aplenty, when you aren't driving for a while then theres the breweries to keep your thirst at bay, I'd move there like a shot given the chance.

We started at the border and made it about halfway up the state driving on Highway 101. What an amazing journey. Driving through tree lined highway and then suddenly it opens up to the Pacific Ocean and the beauty that is there. And then doing the same thing over again. There area beautiful bridges, rivers and lakes thrown in, too. What an amazing thing to see!! Simply breathtaking.

We drove to Cannon Beach from Portland and then drove to Tillamook to visit the location of one of our favorite cheeses. In doing so, we took the Oregon Coast Highway. It was absolutely fabulous. I am only sorry that we did not drive the entire way as it is gorgeous.

I would highly recommend this scenic drive on Highway 101 down the Oregon coast. Lots of impressive views and small towns to visit. Good highway and lots of curves which are great for sports cars.

This drive is always great. The ocean views are amazing and there are many places to turn off and get amazing pictures.

This trip consisted of two weeks visiting Northern California and the coast of Oregon and Washington State

It is as beautiful as California's Pacific Coast Highway, but without as much traffic. There are many beach access points, as well as hiking and scenic overlooks.

One of the nicest drives anywhere. Hugs to spectacular Oregon coast through the many artsy and quaint town and villages. Lots and lots of scenic pull outs to spectacular views and photos. Ideally take your time and enjoy the views. Life was made for this. If you camp (tent or trailer) many many spots (public and private) to stay. Don't rush this trip. It will leave you wanting more and wanting to come back again

We absolutely LOVED this drive along Oregon 's beautiful coastline! Just breathtaking sights! Wish we had more time than just to drive through! Did some whale watching at various over looks. Pretty awsome!

Anyone planning to do this trip will probably have a good idea of the high points and what not to miss - and there are plenty!
My advice (like some others) is to give yourself plenty of time. We travelled from Portland to Crescent City in one long day because we had to. The trip definitely deserved another day that we didn't have.
It is smaller road with at times twists and turns which is part of its charm. When you see an overlook or turnout (I think that's what the locals call them) turn off, because there will be something worth seeing.
We had a misty day but you take what you get. it was still a magic experience.

A February drive provides for little traffic so it is easy to pull off at the MANY VISTA POINTs. We sounded mono syllabic....saying WOW more often than is rational. What a majestic coastline. We are water folks so we just love the wind, waves breaking over the rocks and the churning foam spray at the shore.
Very comfortable drive although overcast and drizzly. Stopped a lot along the way. Very worth it.

Ahhhh. It was a privilege to be surrounded by so much beauty. I don't think this coast gets the attention it deserves. Great drive if you like getting in the car and just enjoying nature along the way. Lots of hiking opportunities along the way.

In early November, we rented a car in Seattle and drove along Highway 1 down to Avenue of the Giants in California, then back to Seattle via Highway 5 in seven days. We stayed the night in Seattle, Astoria, Brookings, Trinidad and Redding. Weather was mild and clear. Traffic was light. Sunsets were spectacular. Amazing drive. Canât wait to pick up where we left off to complete the southern trek. Oregon has some of the most scenic beaches in the world.

We traveled Highway 101 from Cresent City, California to Newport, Oregon and truely enjoyed the Pacific Ocean views. Numerous scenic turnoffs and State Parks along this stretch of road - so, get off of the I-5 Interstate and slow down!! Enjoy life with your family and treasure these moments.

We go at least once a year. It never gets old, always something more beautiful. Weather is never hot, which I love. Its my second favorite place to travel.

Have driven this road from Astoria to Crescent City. Always lovely and interesting. something to see probably every 20 miles, The beach is all accessible.

Spectacular, even in the rain, in some ways more so Beautiful evergreens on one side. Rugged coast and ocean on the other. Several attractions (geological) that there is no charge to stop at. Unique shops along the way, Would have liked to travel more of it, but had limited time. Take your time and enjoy.

Unsurpassed beautiful! Many good view points along the coast, few good places to watch for whale, we saw one at the Boiler Bay that got me so excited and forgot to snap a picture.

Weâve seen photos in the summer with all the vibrant colors but even in the winter it was stunning.
We drove from Astoria to Rockaway Beach.
The pictures do not do it just.

Do yourself a favor and plan a trip to Oregon. Geta car and drive the coast. It doesn't matter where you go, it is all amazing. The views are amazing as you drive along the ocean.

We had driven from Anchorage to Seward and it was the most beautiful scenery we had experienced and were eager to drive 101 to see if it was close. It WAS!!! We just could not stop pulling over at every stop (and Oregon is very generous with scenic viewpoint parking areas). We finally had to limit the pulling over every 3 minutes because we only had five days to make the trip. Since very little of the coast is private property (thanks to the forethought of early Oregon politicians), you can pull over and walk down to the beach wherever there is a trail. The huge cliffs and rocks out in the ocean were so awe inspiring. We saw puffins at Haystack Rock park and walked to the beach on the Hobbit trail. I used Trip Advisor to find cool places to stop that were not so touristy as well and we were never disappointed.
MY RECOMMENDATIONS:
** If possible, get a car that has a built in GPS. I had read this on TripAdvisor and I am so glad we followed this advice. Half the time, you have NO SIGNAL on your phone, so we couldn't use Google Maps. Having the GPS was a life saver. You can go 4 hours without seeing a gas station. Also, IF there is a Tsunami or a traffic issue, your detour can be HOURS. We didn't have a problem but knowing we could find gas/food/bathroom etc helped ease any anxiety in that area.
**Take time to get out and check out the beaches, especially where there is an overpass. That usually indicates a water source flowing into the ocean and there are pools with fish and colored rock as well as red tree bark/pieces that are beautiful. Many times, you will have a beach to yourself and I found those times the most precious of the trip. I am from NJ, so I'm not used to any elbow room. Climb a boulder wall, enjoy the waves, put your toes in the water. Stop at a roadside fruit stand and get some local apricots or Rainier cherries. Also, there are coffee shops everywhere!! They look like they are in old Fotomat kiosks and you can drive thru. People are friendly and ask questions---they will steer you to some pretty interesting sites NOT on Trip Advisor.
**You can negotiate with hotel for room rates (if they aren't busy). They want to fill the room. A couple times, we saved 1/2
**I wrote reviews of some of the hotels we stayed at. We did budget hotels until Portland and had great luck.
**Plenty of vineyards and wineries in Oregon--we could have skipped Napa
**Tillamook Cheese factory was very crowded...cool but not really worth it in hindsight
**wear layers, comfortable shoes, raincoat, and keep long pants in the car to change into in case you want to hike....I got something that gave me a rash (not poison ivy).
Enjoy!! This was our second favorite road trip and we will go from Seattle to Portland next year since we loved the area so much. The combination of sea views, high altitude perspective, no mosquitos because of the ocean breeze, unique flora, restaurants that lean towards the fresh and healthy, reasonable hotel rates and feeling of independence made a road trip in Oregon a wonderful vacation from it all. I highly recommend this.

Lots of delays for repaving, took a very long time to drive just a few miles. Some scenic areas but some of the pull offs have nothing of interest. We didn't enjoy the drive as much as expected.

We spent 3 days exploring (part of) the Oregon coast doing a round-trip to/from Portland Airport.
We flew into PDX for a family visit then we hit the road and headed South down Highway 5 and turned West at Eugene on Highway 126 until we hit the coast. The first day had the most driving - about 4-5 hours and +200 miles but I figured we'll head out furthest and make our back north slowly along Highway 101. Stayed overnight in Yachats (and learned the proper pronunciation) after thoroughly enjoying the Cape Perpetua area (my favorite.)
The next day we got an early start and and took a leisurely drive north exploring and hiking several sites along the way. By sundown we pulled into Cannon Beach and stayed overnight here.
For the final day we explored Cannon Beach, Ecola and Seaside and I was tempted to drive to the Washington border and head back to the Portland Airport via Astoria and highway 30 but that probably would have required another day which we did not have. Instead we took highway 26 from Cannon Beach back to the airport.
It was a wonderful trip but next time I'd plan an extra day and/or cut down on the amount of driving between overnights stops in order to maximize time outside the car.
Be mindful of traffic and delays in/out for Portland and of course the HEAVY rains at times which slowed us to a crawl.

My wife and I drove the Oregon Coast in July, 2011. We started at the CA border and drove north. We tent camped at several parks along the way and thoroughly enjoyed the weather and the scenery. We don't always camp, as we get older we like the B&B's more and more, but for this trip we decided to camp - although it was primarily to stay closer to the beach and to save $ on lodging.
We stayed at Harris Beach State Park (near Brookings), Sunset Bay State Park (near Charleston, and Cape Lookout State Park (near Tillamook). All the state parks and campsite were good.
Of the 300+ miles of Highway 101 that follows the coast, only about 20% is actually near the shore line. Much of the drive is away from the coast and away from the scenery. The southern portion is the most scenic. We found several great breakfast, lunch and dinner places along the way and a grocery store is only the next town away.
Some of the highlights:
- the beach at Harris Beach State Park
- the sunset at Sunset Bay State Park is really very nice
- the markets in Newport have great fresh salmon
- the Tillamook Cheese Factory has excellent cheese and ice cream (we went twice for - ice cream
- Cannon Beach is the most charming of all the towns along the Oregon Coast and it has a great beach. When we go back and stay in a B&B, it will be in Cannon Beach.
- Fort Clatsop is a must see
- the Astoria Column is a great view on a clear day
Not as good as advertised:
- the hike to Humburg Mountain is a nice hike, but the view from the top is obscured by trees (definitely not worth the time)
- the light house were rarely opened and difficult to get to at times
Enjoy the trip and take your time. There are great places to stop to watch the ocean and great places to eat.

We arrived in Astoria on a cruise ship and decided that shopping wasn't what we wanted to do. We wanted to see the coast. So, we rented a car from Enterprise Car Rental which is about a 15 minute walk from the ship (yes, they do pick you up but on a cruise ship day, you might wait all day because it is a small office) . We made the right choice. We jumped on Highway 101, stopped at a grocery store to get picnic supplies, and then headed south. It didn't take very long before we came to awesome ocean and cliff views. There are many pull over spots for pictures. There are also lots of local access points to the beaches along the byway. There are several small towns for bathroom stops and antique stores and some fishing marinas for the anglers. We only drove as far as Wheeler...we weren't comfortable going any further because we had to get back to the ship on time. We ate lunch at one large pulloff with a view of the ocean and huge rocks jutting up out of it. We had a perfect weather day so we couldn't have asked for more. The only nerve-wracking thing was that the bridge we had to cross over to get back to the cruise ship was one of those that opens for boats coming through and it got stuck before we crossed it...fortunately we only had to wait 15 minutes before they were able to open it back up.

Oregon Coast Highway 101 winds along the rugged pacific coast, through rainforest and charming small towns. The best direction to take in this splendour is to travel south; that also makes it easier to pull off and take photographs or just appreciate the expansive ocean and dramatic beachscape.

If you can afford the time on your trip, I highly recommend taking 101 and planning to make lots of stops! The views are breathtaking, several towns are quaint, rich with history and there are bridges, lighthouses, parks and other points of interest along the way. We took 2 days to drive from Crescent City, CA to Lincoln City, OR and still did not see everything. There are high cliffs with spectacular views, bays with sea life, lots of birds and lighthouse tours. Make sure to arrive early if want a tour as they tend to book up fast. We also saw several neat shopping experiences, store fronts, local fruit, farmers markets, and points of interest. Donât plan to hurry as there is slower traffic, winding roads with few places to pass. This is a road to take your time and enjoy all the Oregon Coast has to offer!

If you want to see and hear the ocean as you travel go down the Washington and Oregon coast via highway 101. There are many pull outs along this drive to take a look and relax.

This should be a must-do once in a lifetime for every living person. This was my 3rd time and it still takes my breath away. Driving down that highway is the most wonderful, spectacular experience. To see the ocean and the beautiful sunsets, the lovely little towns along the way with spruced-up streets with gorgeous flower boxes and hanging baskets of varied-colored flowers - beauty to one's eyes.
Give yourself enough time to do this and don't hurry. There are far too many quaint places to stop and take a look-see. I think the speed limit is 55 mph but as you come through communities it slows down more. So take your time and live in the moment and EXPERIENCE it.
Plenty to do along the way: lookout points, otters and seals, sand dunes, swimming, shopping.

We took an unplanned stop trip down the coast of Oregon. Have to say, it did not disappoint! Beautiful views of Gods beauty! We started in Portland and drove to Cape Lookout State Park then down the Coast to Cape Perpetua to see Thor's Well. Then back to Portland. Wish we would have had more time to keep driving! This is one trip, I will try and repeat and see more of.

We drove from San Francisco to Astoria with a 43ft fifth wheel toy hauler. Wonderful drive no issues with the size of our RV, plenty of large RV parks along the way. Highly recommended.

Absolutely beautiful drive! So much to see and do the entire coast. Would highly recommend to anyone and October was the perfect time of year.

I "only" did a drive from Astoria down to Newport. There was so much to see and do that I didn't manage to fit my ideas all in. I found the drive to be very pretty from start to finish; no stretch lost my interest.

We traveled the Highway during October/November. It was wet and rainy on most days, but very beautiful. Weather chilly but not cold cold. We enjoyed stopping along the way to enjoy the views.

This is an awesome day trip coming down the Oregon Coast Highway. I would definitely recommend going this way coming down. It's so gorgeous and breath taking. You can stop along the way to take pictures. Bring your cooler with drinks and snacks just in case. Bring binoculars too during the winter months you might see whales in the distance. Go this way if you can, it's worth it!

The Oregon coast was an experience of a lifetime for me. I traveled from Omak to Portland for the day, then headed to the Coast to spend my first night in the car. I was up early and headed to Cannon Beach. From there, I drove along the coast the whole way into California and stayed on the 101.
If you haven't done this drive, I strongly recommend it! The views are absolutely stunning! The coast line is like no other - especially if you get a sunny day! I could imagine the fog wouldn't really hide a lot of the beauty but I was lucky that it was beautiful the day I drove it.
There are many well marked signs showing where the view points are. I stopped at many and took in the views. I walked along some of the beaches as well throughout the day.
There are also many campground in the area. I picked up an Oregon State map and it worked well. It highlights where the campgrounds are and this time of year, there were a lot of spots open. In the summer, you may need to pre-book especially for the state parks that are right on the ocean.
I'm already planning on heading back down the coast again in the summer time!

The 50 miles north of Florence Oregon are amazing. The huge sand dunes around Florence were impressive to a prairie boy like me. Although very hard to climb. The coast line north will take your breath away. Volcanic rock carved by the ocean.

My son and I needed to get away after a series of family tragedies. We decided to fly to San Francisco, rent a car and drive the 101 to Seattle. We wanted to experience the rhythm of the sea, the majesty of the mountains, the quiet of the redwoods, and the vibrancy of the cities. We got all that and more on that drive. We reminisced, laughed, cried, and dreamed of our futures. It was such a cathartic experience that it was hard to leave. The Oregon coast was our favorite. Lots of beautiful memories made to carry forward.

From Astoria to Gold Beach to Northern California, the views are so awesome you have to stop stopping to get to where you're going! Traffic can be heavy in the summer and there are a lot of bicycle riders on road as well. Rain is a given; snow may fall in the winter. Beautiful beaches, rocky coast lines, the opportunity to see wildlife ranging from whales and otters to elk and sea birds. There a small towns and enormous trees, farms and vineyards. There are restored lighthouses and museums, farmers markets, street festivals and cheese factories. Oregon parks provide excellent access to beach areas for minimal or no cost. Sunsets occur on a regular basis! take the time to explore and enjoy.

Go out of your way to take this coastal experience. Take your time, stop and eat, shop for local wines.
If you do not rush, you can see and enjoy things you have only heard stories about. Find a place(s) to stay and continue down the coast, you will not be disappointed.

I have lived on the Oregon coast for nearly 25 years and my husband and I frequently travel both north and south along Hwy 101. Itâs a great drive!
I have included a lot of photos of Highway 101, from south to north, so my review will also be going south to north :-)
After crossing into Oregon from California, you may wish to stop at the âwelcome centerâ. This is a massive building on your left and they can provide you with lots of brochures and maps.
Brookings is a largish town with all services and a lovely marina and beach area, as well as several nice parks. We like to stop here and buy supplies for a picnic.
Leaving the Brookings area, I think the next 50 miles are one of the highlights of Highway 101 â unquestionably one of the three most beautiful stretches along the entire coast! Youâll see many State Parks and areas to pull over, park and take photos.
The next major town is Gold Beach, famous for the Rogue River jet boats. I think the views along here are so nice.
When you reach Port Orford, say goodbye to the ocean for about a half hour until you get to Bandon. Here you will find a pleasant âold townâ, marina and lighthouse.
The highway once again turns inland, although the old highway went west out to Charleston, then back to Coos Bay. Coos Bay / North Bend is the largest âmetroâ area along the Oregon coast with a population of about 25,000. I always enjoy the big Coos Bay bridge! (Official name: Conde McCullough Memorial Bridge.)
Once across the bridge, youâll see the first of the dunes. This is the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area with the largest coastal dunes in America. They continue for about 50 miles as you drive north, past the towns of Winchester Bay, Reedsport and the river town of Florence.
North of Florence the highway once again goes along the ocean, and a favourite stop here is Heceta Head lighthouse, considered the âmost photographedâ in the country. The highway winds up the coastal hills and is quite spectacular. There are a number of parks along this lovely stretch of highway, in my opinion the second of the three most beautiful stretches of 101.
The next little town is one of my favourites â Yachats. Itâs the classic little seaside village with a population of about 700 and has pleasant scenery everywhere you look!
As you head toward Waldport, a word about the bridges of the Oregon coastâŚ
The dramatic bridges along Highway 101 were designed by Conde McCullough and built in the 1920âs and 1930âs. All are still standing today, although they have had some upgrading and repair work done on them. In the late 1980âs, it was discovered that the Alsea Bay Bridge was rapidly deteriorating and could not be effectively repaired, so it was replaced with a modern bridge. The old bridge was destroyed â regrettably in my opinion, as I think they should have saved a bit of it on the north end for people to walk out on. The ânewâ (1991) bridge at Waldport is a lovely graceful bridge, but without the charm of the old bridge.
Seal Rock State Park is a few miles farther north, and is a great spot for photos. About eight miles north you will come to the large town of Newport with itsâ signature beautiful bridge and NOAA western headquarters to the east as you cross the bay. I like seeing the research ships here.
Youâll see some great ocean vistas as you continue north to Depoe Bay, called the worldâs smallest harbor. A few miles farther and the highway once again moves inland with limited views through bustling Lincoln City and north.
Highway 101 then turns inland behind coastal hills and youâll see rivers and farmland rather than the ocean. The alternative route is called âThree Capes Scenic Driveâ which follows the headlands but is slower with rough pavement and I feel disappointingly few ocean vistas.
Tillamook is famous for itsâ cheese and creamery, as most visitors to the coast consider this a âmustâ stop. I prefer to keep going north. Garibaldi and Wheeler are two small towns I think are quite attractive.
Then the highway climbs up Neahkahnie Mountain and clings to the steep slopes. This section is short but with some amazing views! This is the third spectacular section of Highway 101.
The highway bypasses the âartsyâ town of Cannon Beach, and heads to busy Seaside. From here north to Astoria, the views are limited to non-existent. In fact, I call this stretch of 101 downright âdullâ! Once you sight Youngs Bay and Astoria, though, the scenery is once again delightful.
Continue north on Highway 101 across the impressive Astoria-Megler Bridge into Washington.
A few extraneous notes â-
- The length of Highway 101 in Oregon is about 400 miles. Allow enough time to drive it without hurrying. We seem to average about 50 MPH overall, and the highway goes right through many towns with 25-35 MPH speed limits.
- The best weather is in July, August, September and early October. Of course, those months also have the most traffic! Spring and early summer may be rainy but they are also incredibly green. The highway is subject to severe wind and rain storms in the winter, although it is rarely closed. Snow is common from the central coast northward, but usually just an inch or two falls a few times each winter.
- For the most part, Oregonâs Highway 101 is in good condition. The southern coast is subject to earth movement and as such has rough patches.
- The coastal highway is beautiful no matter which direction youâre traveling, but if you opt to drive southbound, there are two advantages â one, itâs easier to pull out at the many scenic stopping points, and two, the passenger gets great views of the ocean!
We always enjoy our drives along Highway 101 and the beautiful Oregon coast :-)

Driving up and down Oregon highway 101 is amazing. It's like a box of chocolate, you never know what you're going to get in every turn and corner. It's truly scenic, there are lots of turnouts for drivers to pull over and enjoy the view. I'd describe the drive as cathartic to the soul.
Early morning driving can be a little intimidating in that there's some mist and sometimes a little fog can form from the change in temperature from the mountains to the water. Don't forget to bring extra batteries and extra memory stick for photo-taking. Each corner presents unique rock formations and beachfronts. The drive is meant for slow driving. Those who are in a hurry may want to use alternate routes (I5) as there are a lot of people who make frequent stops taking this road.

For the last day of our 5 day trip we decided to travel from Portland to drive along the coast. We started out in rain and cool weather but it was the only day we had. I believe this drive would be really beautiful with a little sun but that's not what we had.
I was only using my GPS to warn me of speed changes as we drove south from Acadia to Tilmoor and was driving slow to take in the views. My last stop for our vacation would be Rockaway Beach.
My GPS hadn't changed but my wife warned me of a 30 MPH sign just as I saw the radar car. He was parked before the town became apparent and he had me. But then as he followed me and pulled me over he tagged me for not stopping for a pedestrian in a crosswalk which cost $260, more that double the speed fine.
Cars ahead and behind had not stopped and I thought I was on high alert and I didn't see an attempted crossing though there were many people along the street.. Someone across the street yelled over that he had been watching and I hadn't done anything wrong but I still thought I was being tagged for the speed trap. Apparently he had seen other stops and there were police cars at both ends of town.
When I went online for radar traps I saw the warning that it is common for this and other coastal towns to up the ante when they make a stop.
They got their pound of flesh but I won't be a repeat Oregon visitor.

We drove the Oregon Coastline from Florence to Newport. There were a lot of places to pull off and take pictures. We saw a lot of sea lions sunning on the rocks. Our favorite stop was the Heceta Lighthouse. We are from Alabama and had never seen the West coast and beauty of the Pacific Ocean. It was absolutely gorgeous. Take time to check out the coast If you are ever in Oregon,, You will not be disappointed.

Take your time and stop a lot. What an amazing highway. every turn is another magnificent view. Watch out for roadworks and take the time to enjoy the bridges

We took our Travel Trailer behind our truck down this highway from OR to southern CA and loved all of it. You can stop off and just take in some views or enjoy them from the car on the highway. We stopped several times and will take this route every time we need to drive that way.

One beautiful view after another! If possible plan extra time and stop often....so much to take in! We had 5 days and could have used 5 more.

I have bee to the oregon coast 4 times and finally comleted all segments of the highway. I particually olve the stretch from Florence to Newport

A motorcycle ride along the pacific coastline from Seattle to California via Oregon. What a fantastic experience we had, stopping in at various towns along the way...Fort Bragg, Gold Beach, Carmel by the Sea. The ride up through Redwood Forests, and along coastal highways just has to be experienced. Breathtaking!! Looping back through Napa Valley (pre-fire) was incredible, then up I5 freeway passing by beautiful Shasta Lake, back to Portland via Tillamook and home to Seattle. 2500 miles of pure fun.

We just got home from driving the 101 Oregon Coast. Traffic was not bad at all. The views were spectacular as usual. We had many nice areas to pull over and take in the sights. One little thing I would change is the little brown state signs that alert you to a sight to see. They are too small and need to be placed a few miles ahead so that you see what the attraction is..We had to back track because we missed the signs a couple times and we never got to see somethings we wanted because we missed the signs and decided not to turn around and go back...Maybe larger signs please

We drove the entire Oregon coast from California to Washington. Just an overall beautiful drive. We were in no hurry and took our time. Enjoyed every minute!

This is one of the most beautiful drives I have done in the USA. The scenery all of the way was amazing, I'm just disapointed that I didn't have more time to spend doing this highway and that I was unable to share the experience with my wife. I will have to come back and do it again with her and take a lot more time to enjoy the experience.

We left Palm Springs and headed to the west coast taking Highway 101 all the way up from California to Portland. The weather was beautiful...no fog, no rain. A warm spring as we spent five days driving and stopping along the sea to see the scenery, the elephant seals on the beaches. It takes a few days longer to take the coastal highway but so well worth the drive and the seafood. Of course having the clear weather window helped us for sure but if you haven't gone this way it is a must see. Even the redwood forest is spectacular with the suns rays shining making it a wonderful adventure.

Probably one of the most spectacular drives ever!!! You will be winding through incredible national forest and jaw dropping views of the ocean, stopping in little towns along the way. A must to see!

I spent four days driving the Oregon coast with my daughter. It was a refreshing and joyous drive. so many great sites, restaurants, fun shops and very friendly folks along the way. Had my camera out constantly. One of my favourite drives ever.

This was both the most beautiful and the scariest ride of my life. We drove from Astoria, OR down to Santa Rosa, CA last week. It was beautiful and we were fortunate to have beautiful weather. The views from the lookout points and from the beaches that you could get to easily were amazing.

Hi out there to all my friendly crazy Adventures, going in my wheelchair van with two friends from Kelowna BC via Washington, Oregon to the Tijuana border down into the Mexican Baja area any tips on best routes highways as we have never done this before and looking forward to it, thanks for any input

We visited the coast and drove the 101 from the junction of the 42 to Tillamook. There are so many Conde McCullough bridges to see and enjoy, along with all the state parks that are spaced seemingly Âź mile apart. The views of the coastline that are afforded are 2nd to none and there are many attractions that you can visit while on this drive. If you have not driven this road, you owe it to yourself to do it at least once.

The Oregon Coast is a beautiful region with sandy beaches, heads, hiking trails, sand dunes, lighthouses, waterfalls, and scenic vistas of the ocean. The highway links us to these outstanding areas of Oregon. The coast communities offer local seafood, cheese, and saltwater taffy at its best.

We drove Highway 101 for the scenery and were not disappointed as the coastline views were beautiful. We started our drive in Seaside, Oregon and left 101 at San Francisco. One of the key attractions we wanted to see were the Redwood treeâs. We took a short cut across to the wast of 101 about 1 hour south of Crescent City, which took us through the Redwood National and State park. It was about a 1/2 hour drive that gave us the view of the Redwood treeâs that we were looking for.
Make sure you give yourself enough time for the slower speeds as you go through many communities and road construction. Also keep your gas tank full, just in case. In our case California was having planned power outages which made fueling up difficult.

We took a week to drive the Oregon coast from North to South and nevertheless we had to skip a couple of things because the road is overwhelming. With the mile-by-mile guide in our hand we lover the drive.
More you can read at my blog http://goo.gl/PNDpzB - tried to put as much info in the article

just returned from the Oregon coast and one of the most memorial drives. Lots of places to camp and hike and explore the windswept beaches with tide pools and sweeping vistas.
Donât miss this

We have traveled all the coast lines in the country and the Oregon coast is one of the best. Highway 101 not only takes you along the beaches but also into the forest and past lakes, ponds and rivers. The towns along the highway are a great place to stop for restaurants and attractions. The coastline in the north is different from the coastline in the south. I think Oregon's coast is just as scenic as the California coast and not as commercialized or built up.

I have driven in both directions from Astoria to California and back and the drive always inspires with its dramatic views of haystack rocks, lighthouses and wonderful bridges. Of course, the whale watching is stellar and the coastal towns are full of delights.

Absolutely the best drive. The entire 101 is fabulous and something everyone should experience. The shops, restaurants, and people along the way were incredible.
Many pull outs along the 101, opportunities for beautiful photos.

Flew into Portland and then drove to Evergreen Aviation HQ and enjoyed the Airplanes on display including the Spruss Goose. Do not to forget the wine country as well while traveling to Hwy 101. The Views are amazing.

It amazes me that these roads where built, take your time, stop and enjoy the sights and the Pacific ocean.
You that drive an RV (especially you with a car or truck in tow), use the turnouts frequently or preferably, use the Interstate for transportation

Be prepared to make frequent stops because the scenery is so spectacular. There are many lookouts so make sure you stop and take pictures. Meyers Beach was one of our stops. Our grandchildren were able to get out and walk on the beach and enjoy the salt air. It was an easy walk to the ocean.

several beautiful views of the pacific ocean from hwy 101. stopped and took many pictures.didn't see sign going into oregon some may be northern california

Oregon Coast Highway 101 is a beautiful drive. We had some time to get down the coast so we stopped at a few beaches and really enjoyed the views.

In early August, 2015, we did a motor tour of the coast of Oregon, via Highway 101, centered on the Florence, Oregon area. Almost every turn in the road, I wanted to stop and get out of the car and take a photo of the pristine coast line. Oregon is also famous for its attractive bridges and dunes. The "Sea Lion Caves," near Florence, was a real treat. We were also able to take in a "Pow Wow" in the little town of Siletz. That was so special and the participants were dressed in the most colorful of native costumes. Not too far from Florence, we spotted a herd of Elk out in the pasture. That was just lovely. The coffee houses are great along the road and a breakfast can last you till supper time. I recommend "Kathleen & Nick's Restaurant." We stayed at "Dean's Oceanfront Lodge" for three nights and everything was just right. The owners are originally from Boston, I'm giving it five stars, with a high recommendation. And, finally, if you get a chance, stop and admire the "Heceta Head Lighthouse," near Florence. I'm adding a photo of it to my review, along with some other photos relevant to my comments.

It's been years since I have visited oregon and spent time on the coast. Brought my husband and parents this time as we travel..even in rainy wide weather the sight, sounds, and smells are one of a kind and bring peace to Mt heart.

The drive up the Oregon coast is spectacular! The Oregon coast is like no other with huge sand dunes to large red rock. We saw numerous sea lions. The light houses are wonderful. However, if you are in a hurry, this not for you. The traffic is slow due to all the little seaside towns.

Not much to say....BEAUTIFUL....The only thing lacking is plenty of sunshine....otherwise, VERY BEAUTIFUL...Perfect place for those who appreciate a Nordic look.

This is an absolutely wonderful experience. Breathtaking. I will say though the lanes are narrow and you have to be careful of the trucks and RVs. The views are amazing.

There are so many beaches to stop and experience different sights! Yes it's not swimming water but the landscape, food and towns are wonderful!

We enjoyed this place. Sea Lions are loud and they smell bad in their natural environment. The people working here were friendly and informative. It seems everyone in Oregon is genuinely nice. We will go back if ever given the chance.

My husband and I drove up the Oregon coast this summer. Stunning scenery and ocean views abound. We booked our stays with Airbnb accommodations. Yachats was the overall winner for best accommodations, restaurants and overall stay. Coos Bay was extremely disappointing despite lodgings we tried on both sides of town two separate nights. We found dining out difficult due to so many businesses being closed. I actually didn't feel safe walking alone there - we considered finding another town to stay that night, which was unfortunate.

What's not to love? Breathtaking views without the swarms of people. Weather that's mild year 'round and an ever changing view of the Pacific as the weather changes from warm and balmy to wild and rugged. It's hard to imagine a coastal trip that could contain the wide variety of sights offered from 101 on the Oregon Coast! We are at an amazing advantage...WE LIVE HERE. Even though this is our home, we regularly travel 101 in both directions from our home in Coos Bay. PERFECTION!

Some roads are about getting there. This highway is partly about that but from the Oregon/Caligornia border to the Washington border it provides a continuing series of ocean vistas. Not every mile is perfect but there are many places where you see the ocean as you follow the highway. I live 200 yards from it on the north coast so mostly drive it in a day if heading south but I understand those who take a week. Not only the view but many small towns improve the experience.

Coming from the wine country (make sure you make a foodie stop in McMinnville - superb little town just past wine country), drive 40 minutes on 84 to Otis, and have breakfast at the Otis Cafe. Then head north. Road is boring until you get to Tillamook Bay and then it is really great. The Oregon Coast is a must see. Stay overnight in Cannon Beach and make sure you stop for lunch in Astoria - very cool old line port town at mouth of Columbia River. Then take 30 back to Portland. No need to take 26 - 30 is fast and better.

this is a MUST , it's the most beautiful coast I've ever been too,on the right was the forest, and left the ocean ,,,it was foggy at first ,,then the sun came out and oh my gosh , unbelievable beauty.....something to see at all times

The Costal Highway is spectacular! There are many places to pull over and just marvel at the breathtaking views.

We were on a road trip from Santa Monica along the coast all the way to Seattle. We thought the PCH was awesome but then we were on the Oregon Coast Highway 101 and then we entered a whole new higher level of awesomeness hahaha. It was amazing and all the time we kept saying OMG because of the amazing natural beauty. Have your video camera ready as you will want to take pics and movies to record your journey. If you like road trips, this is the experience youâve been waiting for. However, please be safe and courteous on the road and do not drive at night as it is very unsafe.

Starting at coos bay all the way to Florence we have stayed in many RV parks and motels and hotels we just simply love it there so much to see great food ocean views animals sea lions and the aquarium. We have traveled the east coast which was beautiful But NOTHING compares to our Oregon coast it is so gorgeous. The salmon fishing and crabbing clamming is amazing and fun. I can not think of ever having a bad day even in the cold wet rainy day there. The beaches a very clean and cared for.

When I received the travel information I requested from Oregon I couldn't imagine reality would even come close to the pictures in the travel guide. Reality was even better. The ocean side cliffs with white water waves crashing against the rocks was accentuated with the sight of whales blowing puffs of water upward and rolling their bodies in and out of the water. The lighthouses that decorate the coast are the perfect addition to the landscape. Sea lions, otters, and dolphins added excitement to the views. The beaches with beautiful rocks a caves were movie worthy. Beautiful and relaxing.

Breath taking! Could not stop taking pictures? We went as far south as Bandon and it was so beautiful

Husband and I were on a Northwest US RV tour, stayed with family in Bay City, OR. From Astoria to Gold Beach and beyond, so many many places to stop and explore! Astoria is a must see for sure. Beautiful Victorian homes scatter the hillside. Haystack Rock, Arch Cape, Rockaway Beach, Manzanita, Bay City (wave as you go by, that's where my sister-in-law and brother-in-law live). Just beyond is Tillamook, where the cheese is made! Further south is Depoe Bay...world's smallest harbor! Stop if you have the time, we always see one or two whales!
There's so much beauty and a lot to see along the Oregon coast!

This road is packed with so much to see from haystack rock to Cape Perpetual the the amazing south coast of Oregon. This belongs on everyones bucket list.

There are no words that can describe the beauty you will find as you cruise along 101. Vacillating between woods and ocean views this highway does not disappoint in any way. If you are into haunted history check out the haunted 101 book for areas along the coast rich with haunted stories. Many of the lighthouses have such stories. Around Depoe Bay is a nice roadside area called Rocky Creek where you can sit for hours and watch whales and boats. Another must see is Cape Perpetua. This is one of my favorite highways in the US.

Awesome & breathtaking part of the interstate 101.
You don't know where to see first.a lot of parking spots along the way to enjoy this amazing ride and take pics. Rocky coastline .warch for the baldeagles a long the way or other predator birds.

Had a great lunch at Moâs seafood and chowder restaurant. The food was wonderful. We ordered the family chowder with extra garlic bread. The wait staff was fun and very helpful. Be prepared for a wait to get in.

Drive from Portland to Tillamook. You will go through beautiful forests with quiet riverbanks. Stop in Tillamook by Sarasotaâs pastry shop to enjoy a good coffee. The pasries look great. Or you have diner from beginning of 20th century which looks nice. Then continue to Pacific city where you will begin going north on 101. Then, till Cannon Beach you will have spectacular views of the Pacific. You can relax in Cannon Beach, which is a nice little town with old shops and restaurants. Then going back to Portland you will go through other spectacular mountain scenic views.

Did a 2.5 day roadtrip along the Oregon coast - September 2022.
The ocean cliffs & views were breathtaking.
I love light houses so visiting 5 in the span of 2.5 days filled my soul.

Favorite drive. The coast is covered in beauty, the ocean is so violent blue. I liked the coarse sand and the crisp breeze. Note foggy weather in the AM. Typically drizzled a little so bring a light jacket to hike. Spots all along the way to stop and snap photos. I took a pro camera to capture the views. Eateries in Oregon are amazing too! 10/10 recommend drive.

We drive south down route 101. It was absolutely amazing. So many pull outs and beaches to check out the ocean views. We stayed in Newport and did say trips out to see the surrounding areas. Cannon Beach was a favourite - west of Portland. Also loved the sand dunes. It was the wrong season for the sea lions, but the caves were still impressive. There is something for the whole family on this trip!

We drove the 101 starting in Washington down to San Francisco and Oregon is the winner in the Coastal drive. The coast belongs to the people here and the state does an amazing job maintaining it with plenty of State parks to enjoy. Buy a Oregon Coast Pass for $15, good for 7 days and never have to worry about any fees. Several Lighthouses along the way as well. A beautiful drive with clean beaches to walk on and small cities to drive thru. Clean bathrooms at several stops along the way.

in two separate road trips, we have driven the oregon coast highway from north of the WA/OR border to south of the OR/CA border. in a combined total of almost 4 days, we enjoyed the scenery, state parks, view point, state beaches, lighthouses and all there was to offer.
i was impressed with the cleanliness of the state park restrooms. of the great signage from the highway directing you to the different points of interest, as well as, the signage at the points of interesting explaining the tectonic plates, the flora and fauna of the area.
beautiful drive - one you want to enjoy and take your time at.

We really enjoyed our drive along Hwy 101 on the Oregon Coast. Although we only drove from Brookings to Newport, there was so much to see and the sights were wonderful. If you are looking to see whales, first thing in the morning is your best bet to do this.
Hwy 101 in the State of Oregon does not always drive right along the coastline (as we found it did a lot more in California). Even so, there were so many wonderful places to stop and the scenery was breathtaking.
Some of our favourite places to stop (even if only at the scenic view spots off of the highway) were Brookings and about 50 miles north of Brookings. Stop as often as you can at the State Parks right off the highway as they are there for a reason and the sights are so pretty. Samuel H Boardman State Park is one of these stops that is a must.
Cape Sebastian State Scenic Corridor is also a wonderful stop if you have the time.
Gold Beach is a nice town to stop in or stay the night, and at the north end of the town, there is a ship wreck on Harbor Way Road.
Next stop is Face Rock State Scenic Viewpoint. The photography from this spot is wonderful as you can capture amazing shots of the Pacific Ocean from here.
Bandon is next. Just south of Bandon is Kronenberg Country Park and it is probably one of my favourite stops. You can walk beautifully maintained trails up high to see the Pacific from above - or you can walk down the steps and make your way to the beach. Seals can be seen here up close and personal. The rock formations from this vantage point is really nice.
Coquille River Lighthouse can be seen from Bandon - or drive over the bridge and walk right up to it for your pictures. Right in the town of Old Bandon, there are great restaurants and shops you can visit. There is a fudge store with the best fudge ever and tons of varieties.
North of Bandon is Dune City and Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Stretching 40 miles from Coos River to Florence, this is part of the Pacific Coast that is just different from the rest and definitely worth seeing.
Florence and then Heceta Head Lighthouse are up next. The best place to get pictures of the lighthouse are about 2 miles before the actual lighthouse. Right off of Hwy 101 is Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint. After you get your shots of the lighthouse - look below and you'll see seals playing in the water and lounging on the beach. It's awesome!
Thor's Well and Devils Churn are approximately 13 miles past the lighthouse. Thor's Well is best seen at high tide (or an hour before or after high tide) and it is incredible. Be careful that you don't get swept out with a huge wave as you get those fabulous shots of the well! (See Trip Advisor for this spot to see how fascinating it really is!!!)
Yachats, Seal Rock and Newport ended our time along the pacific before heading inland to Portland. Yachats and Seal Rock are nice for seeing the coast and Newport is a cute town to walk through if you have time. There are seals on the piers in the town of Newport, and if you have children, it's a great way to see them really close and listen to them 'bark'. Newport is also home to a nice marina.
We loved the Pacific Coast and although they were long days, we saw all of the above in three full days and we weren't disappointed.

The Oregon coast is a must see. It's a great road trip which for me started in Tacoma Washington and ended in Phoenix AZ. It may take just a few days to a week to complete but my friends and I took three weeks for the whole tour. Highway 101 is good but highway one I would say enter at your own risk because it's a narrow road over looking cliffs with the water below. Our tour ranged from Tacoma WA, Lincoln city Oregon, cannon beach, redwood forest, Los Angeles, Hollywood, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon and finally Phoenix.

Not many sea lions in the cave but worth the experience our daughter thought the it was pretty cool to ride s 215 elevator in to the cave.

We have looked forward to traveling down the pacific coast for years! Well, so have every other retired couples with RV's. This road is way too heavily traveled and not made for such ha peavy traffic! We took our trailer off and just drove about 200 miles (all together) with our truck and made the decision not to travel on the road with our rv as that could become a nightmare. No room to pull out, not enough rv parking in most little towns and a lot much need road repair on this route.
Now, all that being said, it is a beautiful part of our country and if you can pull off into the scenic areas, well worth the visit.

We drove the Oregon 101 from the state line on the Astoria Megler bridge to the California state line.
We stopped in Seaside, Tillamook, Florence, Coos Bay, a quick inland detour to Coquille, Bandon, and Gold Beach before entering California.
There seems to be a state park every mile or so along the coast. Pick any to stop at and you shant be disappointed.
What sets the Oregon coast apart are the many sea stacks that line the coast and the large almost empty beaches
This is a drive that is to be taken slowly and with no set time schedule so you can stop when you see something that interests you, which is just about around every corner.

I took the trip with my daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter and sister and we all thoroughly enjoyed the views. The redwoods and drive thru trees were a blast. All the tourist Sasquatch spots were quite amusing and interesting. Very beautiful.

Oregon's coastal highway 101 is one of most scenic road trips we have taken. We started from Crescent City in California up to Reedsport, Oregon. Along the way, there are several coastal towns with excellent beaches and coastal views that you can pull over and just enjoy the fresh ocean breeze. There are also several restaurants to enjoy and satisfy the traveler's appetite for a good meal on the road.

So the oregon coast is about as good as it gets. If you are travelling it take time to stop at Thors Well at Cape Perpetua is located about 2 miles (3 km) south of Yachats, Oregon along U.S. Route 101. This is worth the stop. Take your rain gear if you would like to get close as you will likely get wet.

Oregon 101 is an excellent adventure. It's over 300 miles of the most scenic areas I know. There are awesome rock formations, unique tide-pools, and picturesque towns throughout. Stop here and there to antique and drink beer. It's a top-notch vacation.

This is my favorite stretch of memorable viewpoints and picture taking miles. Several viewpoints allow you to pull over and enjoy the view.
You will want to set a slower pace as the traffic is filled with tourists. You will follow the ocean and see things you have never before noticed if you go slower and take your time.
While the viewpoints may be a bit crowded pull in as people usually do not stay long.

probably one of the most scenic roads in the US. Every time you think you have seen the best there is to see, you are amazed at what is around the next curve. Traffic can be problematic during the summer months, but just have patience and enjoy the ride. There are so many state parks and attractions to see the drive, if not careful, can take 3 days. This is a great drive on a motorcycle.

This part of the country is amazingly beautiful and unspoiled! The weather was perfect. There are gorgeous trees and flowers everywhere!

The Oregon Coast Highway. 101 is a spectacular road to stop along the way at quintessential Oregon Coast towns, teaming with fantastic views with stunning rock formations and tide pools, and delicious restaurants, both formal and informal loaded with local seafood.

Spent three days driving along the coast of Oregon.
Beautiful, charming, relaxing and funky are just a few of the adjectives I would use along with some white knuckling and absolutely spectacular moments.
We had perfect weather, uncrowded beaches with free public access to explore and enough non-chain businesses to make it unique.
I fell in love with Astoria!

This was so relaxing and just gorgeous! There are so many places to pull over and take in the amazing views. I love 101... Here's to new beginnings...

We found driving along the coast simultaneously evoked two strong emotions; Delight, with the amazing natural beauty of the Oregon coast, and frequent Terror with the cliff-edge driving conditions. It's not fear of heights, but a rather healthy survival instinct.
If you drive from north to south along the west coast, as we did, you will be driving along the outside western edge of a steep cliff for much of the trip. And many cliff edges do not always have guardrails, making for a white-knuckle ride. Too much stress!
Next time we will drive the other direction! If we drive from south to north along the west coast, we will usually be along the inside land-side of the road (except at switch backs). This means most of the time we will be driving safely twice as far away from the steep cliff edge. Perfect 40-40 vision, in hindsight.

From the top of CA to the bottom of WA there are hundreds of fantastic stops along this highway. Allow far more time than you expected for the trip, because there are so many wonderful beachfront public stops available.

Driving south along the "101" in Oregon is quite possible the most scenic coastal highway I have ever driven. You have hundreds of spots for pictures and places to walk along the beach. Cape Sebastian Beach, just south of Gold Beach is a great place to park the car, get out and enjoy the beautiful beach. It's flat, surrounded by large cliffs and the Pacific Ocean is magnificent. This is one of the must stops!!

Hi I retired from the Forest Service 12 years ago. I grew up near Newport and until recently had a daughter living there. We now have a time share at Depoe Bay. We get to the coast regularly.
ASTORIA. Historic place. Go up to Astor Column, walk to top if you want. See Fort Clatsop the Lewis and Clark camp, Ft Stevens where portals look out waiting for the Japanese in '41. Lots of old homes.
SEASIDE. One of Oregon's first beach resorts. Nice beach here. Still a busy place. Broadway has arcades, shops. More for the younger crowd.
CANNON BEACH. Trendy place, nice beach, good shops, nice place to stroll around town. Costs a bit more. Downtown is off busy 101.
N TILLAMOOK CO. Several small towns, most on bays not ocean. Fun to poke around in them, more downscale than Cannon Beach. Rockaway Beach is on ocean
TILLAMOOK. Tillamook cheese is the best there is. Visit the cheese factory
S TILLAMOOK CO. Two options here 101 which is not on ocean. Or Three Capes Co Rd. Go west out of Tillamook toward Netarts, S to Pacific City back to 101 s of there. Road is a little narrow hangs on the cliff in a couple of places, but nice drive, not too busy. Sand Lake along here is dune buggy place.
NESKOWIN. Quiet place, beach is a little hard to access, but good one. Nice motel.
LINCOLN CITY. 10 miles long 1 mile wide. Town is right on beach but 101 is not. New Indian Casino n end of town has increased traffic.
DEPOE BAY. Named for Chief Depoe. Very good stop with rocky shore line. Watch the ocean here. Spouting Horn. Beverly Beach SP CG south is popular
OTTER ROCK. Devils Punch Bowl, a good place to see tide pools to north and walk the beach to south. A bit of a walk to them. This is a favorite spot of mine.
NEWPORT I grew up 7 miles w of here. So may be partial. Yaquina Head Lighthouse n of town is open, tide pools here also. Agate Beach where you turn to LH, once aptly named you could always find agates. You still can at times. The waterfront in Newport is good. Shops, deep sea fishing, lots of boats, big bridge, MO's for chowder. Yaquina Bay SP has access to jetty and beach.
SEAL ROCK. State Park Big rocks in ocean, birds, seals?, tide pools. Another favorite stop
WALDPORT. My wife makes us stop at flea market downtown on 101. Some better buys than other beach towns.
YACHATS. Nice little spot, better for motels. but get ready for the next 20 miles. Some of the best coastline there is. Cape Perpetua, nice visitor center. On top was another WWII observation site. Heceta Head Lighthouse and House, one of most photographed places in country.. House is haunted goes the story but you can visit it anyway. Sea Lion Caves. Costs but you can see the sea lions in their cave home.
FLORENCE. It has a bayfront old town too, but not as good as Newport. Parking is better. Honeyman SP is good camp site. Near Cleawox Lake but a bit of a hike across the dunes to the ocean.
OREGON DUNES. Managed by Forest Service. They start at Florence run 40 miles along coast to Coos Bay. You have to get out of the car to see these. 101 just touches on them. Dunes Overlook is a very good site. Several small CGs
REEDSPORT. Winchester Bay is good site. You can crab here. We caught enough for 20 of us not long ago. Good stop.
NORTH BEND/COOS BAY. The city on the coast. and not really on the ocean, on the bay. Charleston to west is also a crabbing site and Sunset Bay SP good place to camp, golf nearby.
SOUTH. Now we are getting out of what I call my old stomping grounds, so a little less familiar. Though have been along route several times
BANDON Only spot from Coos Bay to Port Orford where 101 is along the ocean. Nice old town area with some good shops. Has a good fresh fish market right near the docks.
PORT ORFORD . From here 60 miles of spectacular rugged coast line and you are right on it much of the time. Cape Arago lighthouse worth a visit
GOLD BEACH. If you have time, the jet boat ride up the Rogue River is great. The shorter ride to Agness worked just fine for us, takes 5 hours or so
BROOKINGS. Has become a popular retirement place. Good weather much of year. Just north of Cal state line.
Phil in Oreg
PS Be sure to check out the many lighthouses along the Oregon Coast. You can make a good tour just visiting them.

One day of a 17 day road trip from Oklahoma was driving the entire length of the Oregon Coast on Hwy 101. I agree with all the positive review in trip advisor. Each town has a sign saying "This way to the beach" My ONLY concern with this part of my trip is each town is 10-15 miles apart. You enter each town driving 55-60 mph, then drop to 40 mph, then 30 mph, then 20 mph , and in most towns 10mph. Needless to say it takes all day if you do very little sightseeing.

We loved this rugged coastline and witnessed the power of the Pacific ocean, but we also loved the diversity of the landscape. Sandy beaches, meadows and forests that wind along the entire route.

Do not miss this stretch of highway there are so many places to stop and see. Put extra time in you travels for this. Make sure to see Cooks Chasm, Devils Churn, Cape Perpetua Special Interest Area. The Lighthouse at Haceta Head and the Sea Lion Caves

We drove the entire Oregon Coast from California to Washington. It was absolutely gorgeous. We drove to Newport the first day. Along the way we saw beautiful little light houses and beautiful scenery. We especially wanted to stop at Cape Perpetua to see Thor's Well. This was awesome! You park on the right side, this is a fee area - $5 - well worth it. From there you can take some trails down to the water's edge. We were there at low tide so we could see the tidal pools. We could also get pretty close to Thor's Well at this time. This was a highlight of our trip.
The next day we headed North from Newport. Depoe Bay is a good whale-watching spot. I was told that there is a group of whales that live at Depoe Bay all year long. We were fortunate enough to see whales from the scenic overlook. This was also a highlight.
As we continued north we saw more lighthouses, more beautiful scenery and finally the haystack rock at Cannon Beach.
The only thing I would do differently would be to give myself more time.

There is so much beauty to see as you drive on this coastal route. It takes longer than travelling on the interstate but so much worth it with fantastic views of the sea all along the route. Plenty of spots to stop take pictures, admire the area, get a coffee or even a meal

If you have the time to take a casual drive along the Oregon Coast it will be the most unforgettable thing you will ever do. The scenery is breathtaking with the trees, cliffs and winding roads that take you to places you wish you would never have to leave.

I'd spent some time in OR years ago for work but simply had to come back with my camera & drive the entire Oregon Coast Hwy 101. It was a leisurely trip, solo & SO much fun. If you're visiting, take time to stop & marvel!

The 101 is a great road, and with the help of various mapping services, side trips and alternate routes around towns are simple ways to make the best of a great trip. Lots of interesting accommodation, and highly recommended to take a little extra time to stop and take in the views and the wildlife.

Starting in Newport to Eureka- stop at any of the waysides or the state parks you won't go wrong in seeing the amazingly beautiful views of the coast and rock formations

We drove from South to North - there are so many places to stop & view the ocean & many interesting towns with great restaurants & shops - it took us 2 days & should take 3 or 4 to see everything
Les7h

We took trip in early December knowing the Summer would have been better, but it was still enjoyable

This was our first trip to Oregon and there are no words to describe it. We stopped along the coast to take in the different Lighthouses.

My wife and I started at Astoria, Oregon on US 101, continued south, and picked up Highway 1 at Fort Bragg due to a rock/mud slide at Leggett. We rented a Ford Explorer in Seattle, and we were glad to have the larger vehicle. We were met with high winds at Ecola State Park, rain almost every day, rough roads, and dirt roads with large pot holes on Mattole Road off the Avenue of the Giants. There were several lane closures during our late March drive, but we were free styling with no plans on where we would spend each night. The road is windy at times and sometimes the highway is right on the coastline. Many views of beaches, mountains, sea stacks â just gorgeous. A trip of a lifetime. (My wife wants me to add that she was glad she had some Dramamine on hand.) We also saw cranberry farms in Oregon that were fascinating as well.

I drive the coast highway just for the drive itself. It's beautiful, it's majestic. There is a lot to see and you tend to see something new every time. Lots of great little costal towns with excellent restaurants.

We are heading north on 101 and started our journey in Los Angeles. The Oregon Coast has been our favorite. The scenery is breath-taking and highway 101 is an easy drive, much different than the white knuckle driving along 101 and 1 in California. We only wish we'd taken our Skylark convertible.

Drove from Portland down I-5 to US 20 passing Oregon State University and then on to the Oregon coast - the101. Stopping at Seal Rock - lovely but saw no seals. Next stop was Yachats State Park - beautiful! Cape Perpetua was gorgeous! The dunes were astonishing! Coos Bay was a darling town with delicious food and fun shopping! Port Orford gave us a spectacular view of paddle boarders racing around a huge rock! And making it to Crescent City, CA was delightful. Once we checked into our hotel, we went out to dinner at the Chart Room Restaurant. There was a line but waiting was such fun - between the restaurant and the marina were 30 Sea Lions! Our meal at the Chart Room was perfect!

My husband and I flew to Seattle, Wa. to visit our son and his wife, rented a car and started
driving South along the coast through Oregon and California, ending in San Diego to visit
our other son in Sept. 2012. The scenery along the way was wonderful and had to stop to
take many pictures. The weather was perfect. Loved every minute of the drive.

start at the north end and drive the entire state to california. visit 9 light houses and many beaches just off the road. plan on 2 days to give ample time to stop.

My family spent 6 days doing the coast and redwoods etc from Seattle to San Fran and the Oregon Coast and to be honest everything about Oregon blew my mind. great experience i highly reccomend

This is a very pretty place that everyone should visit at least once. The views along this entire coastline are amazing. Good highways and lots of turn off areas to stop and enjoy the view or take photos.

The Oregon Coast has to be the most majestic and beautiful place I have visited to date. So many State Parks and tons of view spots. My only concern was that in the view spots, there were no trash cans and there was garbage near the guard rails, in the bushes, and down below on the rocks and bluff. They need to clean it up. Otherwise, we went from Astoria all the way to Florence and were incredibly impressed with the views.

We have driven the entire length of the Oregon Coast multiple times in both a car and our F350 dually + 41' 5th wheel. From Astoria to the California border is about 400 miles, so it is a very long day if you make multiple stops to enjoy the many vistas.
Our preference is to drive North to South, which provides easy access to the many vista stops and provides better views of the coast.
The road varies with some sections having reasonable grades and tight turns to flat and straight high speed sections. Even with our 5th wheel we do not have any problem safely and comfortably navigating the tightest corners or tunnels.
We prefer to spend about a month completing the entire coast.

There are no words to describe the majesty and splendor along the Oregon Coastline as seen on Highway 101. We had spent time in Portland and took Hwy. 26 W to Seaside (gorgeous drive)-to Garibaldi, OR. The 101 has many scenic view points that you can pull off the highway with views and opportunities to take breathtaking photos stopping in the coastal cities to enjoy museums, various attractions, antiques, special restaurants with fresh seafood, the roar of the Pacific Ocean and fabulous beaches. We enjoyed meeting interesting folks along the way. Though we stayed in a hotel, there are many campgrounds along the route. I wish for everyone to see this area.

101 coastal highway along the Oregon coast gave us many pictures so much changing scenery and coastal villages and spots. Love it everytime we go.

From the Redwood we started the Oregon Coast where we drived a lot more the following days.
It is very interesting and sometimes you have wonderful views on the coast.

Just amazing sand dunes ,mountains and beautiful coast. Will return if we go thru again .
Coastal town are cool but stay clear of Reedsport and CoHo Rv park âŚvery strangeâŚ

Drove solo the Pacific Coast Highway (Hwy 1) and the pacific coast highway 101 from Ventura CA, through Oregon way up to Forks WA in 6 days. Amazing experience. Beautiful scenery and landscapes. Trip of a lifetime. So many different vegetation, views and colors to experience. Lots of place to visit, stop for a coffee, walk or just relax. Beautiful forests.

Sept 1st-5th Drove from Reno NV to Mendocino CA-Gold Beach, OR-Portland OR-Eugene OR. Beautiful scenery. I am a planner so I looked into easy short hikes along the way. We did the following hikes/point of interests which I highly recommend:
Samuel Boardman State Corridor, Natural Bridges, Arch Rock, Captain Cook Trail & Thor's. Well, Sisters Rock, Otter Point Trail, Devils Punch Hole. We would of loved to explore more but we were on a time crunch. We just wanted to get a quick snap chat of what part of the Oregon Coast had to offer.

Wonderful 2 week trip up the coast. Camping in the trees, camping by the ocean, it was wonderful . Just took our time look at the sights, stopping at roadside fruit stands, eating fresh fish and drinking Oregon craft beer.

Beautiful stretch of coastline. There are few roads that hug the coast for so many miles. So much white sand. Lots of beach parks with free parking. Hard to recommend one over the other as most are gorgeous with very few people. Shame water is so cold. Reminiscent of the more famous California coastal drive but far less developed and more rugged as well as cooler!

Recently took a road trip from Washington state to the Oregon Coast and drove down through Portland but decided to come home along the coast of Oregon following HWY 101 and so glad we did, absolutely beautiful drive with amazing views! Ocean views, amazing scenery, cute little towns and plenty of spots to pull off the road and enjoy the coast. Stop at the sea lion caves in Florence, visit devil's punchbowl state park, Tillamook, Lincoln City, Cannon Beach, Seaside, Nye Beach and so much more!

The Oregon coast hwy 101 is my favorite road trip! I love the amazing views, the children love exploring the beaches and we all love the culture and vibe

There are great views, and multiple parks and places to hike along the way. Fantastic way to spend the day!

I lived in Oregon for 9 years and got to learn the coast very well. I took my new family there last spring and got to share this breathtaking sceenary with them and to see the looks on their faces as we came around every jaw droping view was priceless! Take your time and stop as often as you can.

The drive from Newport, Oregon to Eureka, California is not to be missed. This is a 500 mile drive, which took us a day and a half with a stop off in charming Yachats.
The vast majority of the drive hugs the coast, with blue Pacific rollers, pristine beaches and rugged coastal cliffs and rocks. Absolutely splendid.
Some of the drive is through native redwood forest, at times the trees encroaching within feet of the road most of which has been kept in pristine order.
It is a bit twisty in places, but very easy to drive.
We have driven the Australian Great Ocean Road from Adelaide to Melbourne.
The Oregon Coast Highway 101 beats it by a distance in spectacular scenery. A must do.

We have driven the Oregon 101 coast. its a gorgeous area along the Pacific Ocean.
Some of our favorite areas are Astoria, Cannon Beach, Florence, Brookings
We like the state parks and numerous lighthouses. We like Tillamook for the cheese factory and the aviation museum.
There are hikes to take. There are fun places to dine. Our favorite places to dine is Cannon Beach and Florence.
We like the giant sand dunes in Florence.
Its a wonderful highway to drive. We're in particular happy that our last few trips we've had clear and sunny weather.
For this trip, we enjoyed the stretch from Cannon Beach to Astoria.

So many nice places to stop and look at the beautiful views. Get a guide at some local shops as there are many great views that you wouldn't know to stop at unless you read about them. Roads are generally in good condition with plenty of pull outs and passing lanes.

Stayed in Bandon, Oregon and drove up and down the coast of Oregon on Highway 101. The beauty of this state and the coast was spectacular and awe inspiring. I sometimes could not believe my eyes because it was like looking at a painting or picture of the coastline.

You will find great views in summer to drive along the Oregon coast on Highway 101. After many times visit, I prefer to drive from south to north. Coastline scenery is great and you can have various sightseeing points when driving along. Lots of scenic spots with clear signs. You can also find shopping outlets together with the cheese factory.

Wow! The coastal scenery is gorgeous. Take 3 days at least to go from Astoria down to Brookings. There are numerous State Parks but choose which ones to visit wisely. Ecola and Shores Acre are a must.

This is one of the most beautiful drives in the United States. We spent 4 days driving from Portland down to the California border with Globus tours. We experienced some very nice accommodations, great food and spectacular scenery. I also enjoyed the unspoiled small towns that we passed through. I would love to go back and spend more time here.

Plan to meander with car and get out an experience little coastal towns, gardens, Ave of the Giants Redwoods, National Parks and fresh seafood.

This outfit runs a great trip out of Portland to the coast. We enjoyed a picturesque drive in a luxury van through pastures, valleys, to Ecola Park, along hwy 101 to Cannon Beach and beyond. Our guide was informative, energetic, and provided several stops to look at ocean views and beach strolls. A full day of fun, food, snacks, and 8 friendly passengers learning and enjoying this amazing area of the Northwest United States.

Spectacular is an understatement. With every turn along the highway, one more majestic view after another unfolds.
The fog creeps along the shore, across the highway and up the mountains with cracks of sunlight seeping through.

Highly Recommend! Great place to walk on the beach and great photo opps! We stayed at Barview Jetty Campground - see review under them.

Highway 101 from Portland WA to Santa Rosa CA is just stunning. From the pine forests of the north, through the wetlands of North Oregon, the cliffs, mountains, lakes, seascapes and bridges of Oregon and into the redwood forests of Northern California, there is never a dull moment on this road and the scenery rivals anything I've ever seen before. Leave plenty of time for stops along the road - you'll need it!

A coastal highway cutting through the forest. Heavily traveled by campers and RV's, making the trip agonizing slow. Not worth the trip if you can use a different highway.

OMG!!! What a beautiful drive... it is mesmerizing!!! Scenic views are around every corner....plan to stop often....the early morning fog lifted and the majestic landscapes came into view!! Please travel this highway sometime in your life... it's awesome!!! We started just north of Crescent City, California, and drove north to Florence, Oregon. We wish that we had an extra day allotted on our vacation to travel up to the Washington border!!! A MUST SEE!!

Just finished Oregon coast trip and it was incredible. We started on hwy 101 in San Francisco and finished in Lincoln City. Coast is absolutely beautiful. We can't wait to do this trip again. myscenicdrive.com was helpful in picking places to visit as was tripadvisor.

You can drive this in a day but if you want to see wonderful sights and go off the main road then you need days. Too much to see and so plan your trip and add time.

I have enjoyed the California Coastal Drive but the Oregon Coast Highway 101 is the prettiest drive that I have ever experienced in these many years. Breath-taking! If you have the chance, this has got to be one everyone's "bucket list" of drives... Take it slow and enjoy the ride. The Good Lord took his time making this ...so enjoy it..

My wife and I drove up the Oregon Coast from Newport to Seaside. The views were magnificent. We had lunch at the Pelican Pub and Brewery in Pacific City. The Pelican is right on the beach ! The drive was one of the most scenic I have ever experienced

Guide Ryan was knowledgeable, courteous and went out of his way to accommodate everyone.
Stops as advertised and more.

After our 1 night stay at the Fireside Motel in Yachats, we headed south as far as the sea lion caves attraction before turning around and heading north along the coast highway towards Seaside.
Attractions / seaside communities along Highway 101 that we stopped at or drove by included the following:
⢠Sea Lion caves attraction â admission fee
⢠Cape Perpetua â 12 miles north of sea lion caves attraction ($5 per day vehicle charge). If you are into hiking, Cape Perpetua would be a great place to visit. There is a visitorsâ center where you can get additional information. Also, check the government website for additional information.
⢠Newport
⢠Lincoln City
⢠Seaside â we spent one night here
There are many more attractions to visit along the way. The amount of time you want to spend on this highway depends on what you want to do and see.
I would have liked to have spent more time at Cape Perpetua, Newport and Lincoln City but due to time constraints we really didnât see any of the above attractions / sites in great detail.
I would rate the overall experience along Highway 101 at 4 out of 5.
Notes &Tips:
⢠We drove along Highway 101 on the Memorial Day Monday and we got caught in slow moving traffic south of Lincoln City.
⢠Use one of the many pullouts to take some photos of the Pacific Ocean vistas. At one of the pullouts (between Yachats and the sea lion caves attractions, there were sea lions sun tanning on the rocks below.
⢠If you happen to be driving along the coast close to sunset, find one of beaches or pullouts to view the sun setting into the Pacific Ocean.
⢠There is a factory outlet mall in Lincoln City.
⢠The day before we had just driven from Springfield via OR 126 and US 101. At the junction (Florence) we headed north to Yachats and missed the sand dunes south of Florence.
⢠This was day 6 of our journey to Central Oregon and the Pacific Coast. Our 8 day journey included Columbia River Gorge, Painted Hills, Smith Rock, Crater Lake and Salt Creek Falls.
⢠The 7 Wonders of Oregon is a tourism marketing strategy. The 7 wonders include Crater Lake, Painted Hills, Smith Rock, Wallowas, Mount Hood, Columbia River Gorge and the Oregon coast. More by coincidence than anything else, we visited 5 of the 7 wonders. See my reviews.

Never having been in Oregon or seeing the northwest Pacific Coast, this was a great drive. Highlights were the haystack rock and beach at Cannon Beach, the Cape Meares Lighthouse tour and viewpoint, Oceanside Beach with the Three Arch Rocks, and the haystack at Pacific City.

We took a day to drive the coast and explore the many shops, antique stores and enjoy the local scenery. It was a beautiful relaxing day trip. It doesn't take the entire day to do this drive but we took it at a slow pace to enjoy the scenery

I only wish we had the time to start from Astoria to get the full 101 experience but when you fly 14,000 Klm to get somewhere you do what you can do in the time available , right ?? So we started from Tillamook and down South we went. The towns are all on the Rand McNally or AAA maps and are yours to explore or ignore at your leisure but I can safely say as a world traveller that it ranks up there as one of the best drives on this Ol' Planet ! If you doubt that statement go and give 101 a Burl !! That's Aussie for give it a try !!! OK ?? It would be re-miss of me to not mention the best guide to the Oregon Coast which is "The Original Highway 101 Mile-By-Mile Guide " which we followed religiously and it enhanced our whole trip of the OC ! Download a copy and you won't regret it !!

I drove the Pacific Coast Highway through Big Sur two years ago. It was spectacular. I was expecting at least some of the same from the Oregon Coast Highway 101. I was sorely disappointed. For the vast majority of the 400 miles of highway, the coast isn't even visible! Even in places where the map looks like the road is right on the beach, there were often trees blocking the view.
Having said that, there are some very beautiful places along the highway. There are just MILES of road between them. My advice .... don't think of the highway as the destination. Pick out a couple of spots and just go there. Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural area, Cape Perpetua, Ecola State Park were all very nice. Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock are OK (great if you are looking to hang out on a beach for a day), but I found it crowded and not particularly scenic. The views are better from Ecola State Park.
I spent two whole days driving the entire length from the border to Astoria. Most of the drive was just a waste of time.

Very impressive views from the highway and beautiful beach views and several kites being flown. My brothers and sister were enjoying a leisrely drive along the coast and sadly arrived to late in the afternoon to visit the Tillamook Chees Factory.

Beautiful view points to stop and look at! View the ocean and trees. Windy roads, only about 55mph. A definite must !

The Oregon Coast Highway (US 101) is a true scenic delight along most of it's length. It is best driven north to south; most of the turnouts and viewpoints are on the ocean side, so you won't have to cross traffic to get back on the road. Also, you will go from the most heavily-trafficked, touristy areas to the most primitive and unspoiled. The best parts are Seaside - Tillamook; Newport - Florence; Coos Bay; and Bandon - Gold Beach.
Be aware that 101 curves inland along some of its path, so you won't see the ocean for miles on end.
I have been driving 101 for six decades, and the improvements - widening curves, improving shoulders, adding turnouts, even adding some passing lanes - have made it much easier to drive. Also be aware that 90% of 101 is two lane; it can get very slow with the campers and RVs mixing with log trucks and chip trucks during the summer. That said, it is worth the effort and planning if you've never done it.

This is a beautuful drive with great views of the beaches and ocean but the beautiful forested hills as well.
The roads are very smooth with limited to zero potholes etc. These are some of the smoothest highways I have driven on in any area so they rank top of any list in this regard.
There is always easy pull off areas to stop and take pics or hike a little for an even better view. There are also farmers markets over weekends that are worth stopping and getting huge berries.....Raspberries, Strawberries, Blackberries. They are incredibly good.
The drive alone is a perfect way to find new spots and great places for pictures .

Nice road with lots of places to see and things to do on your way to your destination. Lots of beaches and shops. Very very beautiful and scenic for sure!

Everyone needs to see this gorgeous coastline. Kudos to Oregon for having tremendous foresight in preserving and maintaining such a beautiful piece of the USA.

Oregon Coast Highway 101 is the road where you really enjoy driving. The view is great and you have to make stops to enjoy the view and take pictures.

We drove the 101 from Redwoods NP in CA up to Tillamook in OR. If you are lucky with the weather you will have some really nice ride along the road, beautiful outlooks always and stops for photos, near Tillamook we headed to Cape Lookout and did the Cape trail, which was kind of muddy and wet due to rain, but it is such a scenic hike and must do.

Take note that we were only on the scenic highway for a short distance, very far north, up close to the Washington state line. However, the tide was out so that meant there was nothing scenic at all to see. We drove by miles and miles of swamp land looking mud. I'm sure the view would have been much nicer had it been high tide. You may want to check the tide chart if you are traveling this highway in northern Oregon. We should have taken the faster route to get to Cannon Beach instead.

This is one of the most beautiful drives I have ever been on and there are so many things to do along the way. I highly recommend driving this highway and taking lots of time to stop and enjoy the view.

Stop everywhere and check everything out. Take a hike. Go to a lighthouse. Stop at a little restaurant along the way. Make memories with your family and friends.

My husband and I traveled the Oregon Coast Highway 101 as part of a trip down the entire West Coast from Seattle to San Diego. If you're reading this, you've probably heard good things about the Oregon Coast by now but I can definitively say words can't do this magnificent coast justice. The rock formations and the Pacific Ocean along the Oregon Coast Highway are spectacular. We found ourselves stopping constantly, just to take it all in. We started at the Astoria Megler-Bridge, stopping at Seaside, Cannon Beach, and Florence. Make sure to spend some time at Thor's Well too. It's such a unique and thrilling geological feature!

The drive was everything I had heard about . The most beautiful drive. Lots of places to pull off for great pictures of cliffs and rock formations . I would highly suggest this tour down 101

August 28, 2017 - After leaving Newport, we continued our drive down the Oregon Coast to Crescent City, California. It was a difficult drive because of the many incredible view points and vistas along the way. We just could not make any good time but it was worth every stop.
I would recommend that one take a little longer than we took to enjoy the vistas. We didn't leave Newport until after 12 noon and it would have been more enjoyable if we had left Newport around 10am or earlier.
Still, I would not miss this beautiful drive down the Oregon Coast.

This is a must, at least once if you can.
The roads are good and the views breath taking. It literally runs down the entire coast of Oregon with plenty of great little stops along the way. You can book ahead, or take your chances, with plenty of accommodation along the way or just drive.

Oregon Coast has always been on my travel to-do list - finally did it! Started in Crescent City and got as far as Cannon Beach before heading back to Portland. Every town has its own character and feel, and every pullout (yes, it can be done while heading northbound) is pretty as a picture, even in the drizzle of June. Cannon Beach was just wonderful though - a true highlight.

How do I describe one of the most beautiful scenic views in the world as we strolled the beautiful beaches and drove slowly through this majestic ocean side piece-of-heaven. Carl and I started our USA holiday by taking the Black Ball Ferry to Port Angeles and heading south and then east to the Oregon Coast on Feb. 14th, 2015. The view was breathtaking and I am from Vancouver BC so I know breathtaking. Be aware that if you plan to stay in one of the sea-side resorts, hotels or B&B's you need to book ahead as alot of them were filled up.

We drive from Florence to Astoria then onto PDX. An absolutely gorgeous drive, but there are so many great places to stop and stretch - take your time on this drive to relish the beauty, you won't regret it! For a FABULOUS ocean view with your lunch or dinner, be sure to stop at "Tidal Raves" in Depoe Bay. Take a self-guided tour of the Tillamook Creamery in Tillamook - free cheese tastings and a store carrying wine and cheese, of course - you can get all the fixin's for a sweet picnic here. The best ice cream you've ever had (more butterfat) and a breakfast/lunch restaurant - tempura-battered cheese curds anyone???Well worth the stop...

What a difference the years make. We had fond memories of a previous trip down the Oregon coast, but times have changed. They just seem to be clear-cutting the state from Portand to Brookings. Who says there are no logging jobs anymore. Bare hills and mountains and logging trucks. And most of the towns along the way now very crowded tourist towns. Just the new ticky tacky stuff you don't want to see while your toodling down the coast. Marriots, Best Westerns. Safeways. Fortunately we found a few smaller nice motels to stay at. We just avoided the bigger towns. It says a lot that there are now about 6 Mo's chowder houses. How unique. And rain. Lots of rain. And more rain. Right until we hit the California border. I don't know. It was nice but just not that great. We learned a new weather term we had never seen before. Sunbreaks. At 3:00 there will be a sunbreak. Out pops the Sun, then goodbye. Strange.

Most Beautiful Coastline I've ever seen. It changes as you drive down 101. If you haven't ever seen it before put it on your bucket list. You won't be disappointed.

Beautiful drive - with plenty of opportunities to stop & enjoy the beach and/or the scenery. Several small towns that just beg to be visited. We only had part of a day to drive so we didn't make it as far as we would have liked but we did stop several times & walk on the beach or visit a shop or store.

My wife and I left Oregon 24 years ago. It was AMAZING to see the beautiful Oregon Coast! The weather last week was picture perfect. There are many many turnouts and observation points for getting excellent Kodak moments! It is some of the most amazing scenery I have ever seen, and I am a world traveler!

It's beautiful, it meanders, the locals are happy to see you, the towns are charming. And then there's the rugged cliff faces, view of the ocean and Oregons entirely PUBLIC owned beaches, any one of which you could pull over to and explore freely.

I just drove this highway for the first time. There's a variety of scenery -- long beaches, rocky pinnacles, dunes, forests. There are many opportunities to stop and explore or just take in the views along this route. I suggest allowing 2-3 days so that you can take your time to visit and see the sights. Probably best to book overnight spots ahead of time. Downside: many areas are very crowded. Going off-season and/or finding out of the way places is helpful to avoid crowds.

Wonderfrul drive up the coast. Stopped at the Crazy Norwegian for homemade razzleberry pie! Beautiful views through tall fir trees down steep cliffs to the sea. Great rest stops. Picked up driftwood along the incredible grassy, dune-filled beaches. The Dunes National Park is amazing. Huge dunes. Loved Coos Bay's wonderful bridges and Florence is a sweet town. Many great places to stop and let the wind cleanse your head.
Road trip with our Mazda Miata
The spring of 2018 my husband and I took a road trip up the Pacific Coast highway in our Miata convertible. It was all amazing but the part on the 101 in Oregon was the best. We made so many stop to see the ocean and landscape it took us several day to just get thru Oregon. I highly recommend it just take your time. Lots of awesome little breweries along the way
!
