Challenging but worth the climb

By julie6114 |

Highs and lows on this hike but we loved every step of it. Go early as it’s a popular place with the locals. We loved the scenery, the fact that trail is well marked with distance markers is very helpful in gauging how far you’ve gone or how far until the end of trail. Beautiful flowers and markers placed throughout the hills describing the plant life. Check it out you won’t be disappointed.

Beautiful Views

By Julia B |

I was hiking by myself on Black Friday and the trail was populated, but not crowded. This is not a loop trail, so I stopped at a sign that warned 'strenuous hiking ahead'. That was what I believe was 1.5 miles in and I decided I didn't want to find out how far it went before turning around to go back. Invest in hiking shoes if you're planning on doing activities like this. I'm a fit 45 year old woman, but there are slippery rocks and I witnessed two people slip and fall in tennis shoes. There were people running, but they looked like regulars. People were very friendly and pleasant and the views are worth the time.

Favorite Hike in Area

Steep first mile, but levels out. Views are very worth the climb. Crowded by 10 am. Parking overflow to streets. Take water. Nice smooth trail.

Hiking Pinnacle Peak

By Shelly S |

Make sure to go early to avoid the extreme heat even in October, wear plenty of sunscreen and take at least a quart of water per person. It is rocky terrain so wear sturdy shoes and stay on the trial to stay safe. Beautiful views! It’s a moderate hike and takes about 2 hours.

Good for beginners and kids

By RidgelyQ |

This is a nice, well manicured trail that is easy to hike. Wide paths, inclines are nice graded trails or steps. It is not a loop so after the 1.75 mile hike you turn around and go back the way you came. The hike itself isn't bad but the hardest part is after you get to the end and turn around - the stairs back happens to be where the majority of the elevation hits...at least that is what it feels like! The views are gorgeous. Our 8 year old loved that they had a book to "read" for the first mile - there was a book about a pack rat with a page every 2-3 markers...kept the attention of the kids. We completed with kids aged 6-14 and all had no trouble. Just make sure you manage expectations and they understand they are turning around and going back!! :)

Beautiful hike

By gwarnica |

Full hike is almost 4 miles. Lots of ups and downs. Informational. Beautiful views. Drink lots of water.

Easy to medium difficulty

By adam w |

Pretty easy hike with great views. Was relatively easy for a family, my 10year old found it to be not very challenging. Parking was easy as well. Nice experience.

A must do Hike in N Scottsdale

By laurieSue |

This huke is medium level as its not too strenuous. You can decide how long you want to make it as they have 1/4 mile markers. The amount you go in you must turn around and come back out, it is not a loop hike. The homes you view in the distance are reason enough to enjoy a stroll through the scenic desert ladscape of beautiful AZ. In the cold months i have seen deer, bobcats, and gila monsters. It is safe, and well manicured....love this trail on a Sat or Sunday. Enjoy the scenery and workout.

Beautiful, moderate hike

By Kindra L |

The views on this hike are spectacular! Elevation gain seems like a lot but the hike is made of switchbacks so it's not like climbing a hill.

The best hiking experience we’ve had in the Scottsdale area

By RknRon |

This is a solid five stars from picturesque scenery, solidly manicured trails, to great views all with a great hike which is a challenge from start to finish, this is a must for hiking!

Best view in town

By joansT3646BL |

So glad we put this gem of a hiking spot on our things-to-do in Scottsdale list. Didn't walk the entire trail, as once we got to the top and took in the views, we were satisfied to go back down. The (college-aged) kids said this was their favorite stop in town. Parking was easy, the trail was well-maintained, and noticed all ages enjoying it as well.

A 'must'

By annmv2014 |

A 'must' for anyone & everyone!!! It is beautiful a good 'work out', if you like to hike. Even if you don't work out, it's just a beautiful area!

Great trail! But GO EARLY to avoid crowds.

By MarkFL-USA |

I would rate this hike as intermediate. There are steeps and flats, smooth & stoney. I'm 65 snow skier with a not so good knee, but was fine with a walking stick. It's not a loop -- you hike up, then down the back side, then return. 3.5 miles total. Or just do as much as you want. If you've done Bryce & Zion, you'll be fine. If you're hard-core, then run it, as some were doing.
CAVEAT!... GO EARLY! We were there by 9AM and the main parking lot was almost full. There was enough room on the trail, though. But on the return by noon or so, it was packed. Families on the way up with gaggles of kids all over, looking at phones, yacking, not paying attention -- a real amateur hour. When we left, the parking lot was overflowing with cars all the way down to the main road. Be there close to opening time. Good restrooms (with plumbing) at the trial head.

Beautiful landscape in Scottsdale

By hurricanenwo |

A truly hidden gem. I wanted a nice activity after I left the airport and before I checked into my resort. The views are breathtaking. I can see why it's so popular. The hike up isn't even extreme it's a nice pace but not to steep. I highly recommend.

Great hike and Book

By machousebc |

a great part of this hike for our kids 3 and 5 years old was the book they had on posts ever few hundred meters. It's a gradual climb that would be great to run or walk with all age brackets. Nice view when you get up there and the cactus introductions and signage are a nice touch.

Incredible views!

By Traci O |

We are beginner hikers and this was not a difficult climb and the views are worth the effort. We arrived about 0930 and it was already busy. I suggest going early, taking plenty of water (more than 1 bottle), and wear sturdy shoes you don't mind getting dusty. There were families with small children and it appeared tough for the little ones plus there are areas where the trail is narrow and there is a drop off.

Nice day hike

By Marjorie G |

Did this hike yesterday with friends. There were a lot of people, and a lot of runners. But it wasn't bad. There is a little store and bathrooms at the bottom, and it's built more like an interpretive walk, with little signs all along the way.

We had fun exploring all the big houses below, since that's really the scenery.

From the peak you can see the entire Phoenix Valley.

By leo j |

After a 5 mile drive to the top you are given an absolute fantastic view of the valley. The park was in full bloom in March. Didn't realize there were so many different colors and it was really green after the rain. It is such a different view of color from the desert in north Phoenix. Well worth an easy drive..

Easy to get to, great views

By kgrayf |

This was an easy location to travel to, no parking or entry fees. I am a landscape painter and felt safe and comfortable painting at Pinnacle Peak. Lots of families, couples and singles came by to hike to the top of the Peak. The varied plant life and rockscape made it an interesting subject to paint. I didn't do the hike to the top since I was there to paint, but even from the lower path, the long views were good. I imagine you could see "forever" from the top.

Excellent views

By Trobb628 |

Great hike with excellent inclines and declines. Magnificent views . Easy access and a nicely groomed trail.

Great hike

By Wanderlust87 |

My husband and I hiked in Pinnacle Peak Park early one morning in late August. Our early start time and overcast skies allowed us to finish before the heat set in. Hikers and runners who are used to the mountains zipped past us. We were much slower but still completed the trail in just over a couple of hours (we also stopped very frequently to take pictures and read the signs). The views are beautiful and the signs explaining various plants are great. And the trail is in fantastic shape. The next time we're in the area we'll be sure to visit the park again.

Picture Perfect!

By Smarie |

Pinnacle Peak was a stop we made on our round-about of the area. There was plenty of parking, though we were struck by the number of warning signs, reminding visitors to lock car doors, and lock valuables in the trunk. The grounds were beautiful, and we received a wonderful history lesson from Nancy, one of the staff at the park. Definitely a place to visit, if in the area.

3.5 Miles Back and Forth Local Hike

By Dan |

I read about Pinnacle Peak Park at one of the travel websites and decided to add to my travel itinerary. I definitely love the variety of cactus all over the park and the city view once you hit about .75-1 mile from the trailhead. The hike is pretty easy and the incline is quite manageable. Coming back could be slightly more challenging as there are many steps coming back up but you just need to take your time. Depends on your speed, you can finish the 3.5 miles within 1.5 hours on average

Great place for a moderate out and back hike!

By Dave J |

We did this hike on a comfortably cool morning in February. We tapped out on a much more difficult and crowded Camelback Mountain. The area is well marked and there is ample parking at least for the early birds. There’s a friendly ranger station and very nice facilities.

The great thing about this hike is it is so well constructed and surfaced with fine gravel. The one way distance is 1.75 miles. There are some “strenuous sections” (one is even marked as such!) but if you are in reasonably good shape you should have no trouble.

The path ascends and descends and wraps around the Pinnacle Peak Mountain. There are views everywhere, but it is definitely still suburban north Scottsdale and you see all the development and golf courses all around.

Part of our group tapped out on the hike back, but we were able to drive to the end of trail area to pick them up easily after about a 5 mile drive.

The thing that surprised me is how many trail runners there were. I thought they were absolutely crazy, as footing is slippery at best in spots, but I’m guessing 5-10% of the hikers were runners.

This should go without saying, but if you are planning a weekend hike, arrive early! We got there before 9 AM and just did get a parking spot. By the time we got back the trail was overcrowded and there were cars parked well out in the adjoining street.

Great hike

By Rickjb0527 |

Fantastic hike that is not too difficult and the views are phenomenal. Seen many people with their young kids. 2 hour hike at most.

Great hike for part of the day

By Kim H |

My husband and I wanted to go on a hike, but not have it take all day as we had limited time. This place was perfect. Not too long and not too short (1.75 miles each way). Even though it was not long, we were able to enjoy some great views and get some good exercise. Parking lot was small, but plenty of parking on the road leading up to the park. I would highly recommend it.

Awesome views!

By Danny R |

My friends wanted to visit Pinnacle Peak Park. We stayed until sunset and what a beautiful sunset it was! Pinnacle Peak Park is another great Arizona location for snapping landscape photos and wedding parties.

Great trail… Perfect for beginner

By ericp_irl |

I was in Scottsdale for a conference and used the occasion to explore local trails. This one was great. Very well signed, easy (ish) and not too long. In the summer months, go early! I was there at 5AM (with many other people with the same idea) and it was already 30 degrees… Bring plenty of water. There is facilities onsite to fill your bottles, replenish after your hike…

Pinnacle Peak is Sweet!

By SHayes3 |

This park/hike is a gem. It challenges casual hikers in reasonably good shape. Frequent hikers in great shape will break a sweat but will probably consider this a great hike to get the blood flowing. The out and back distance is 4 miles with significant elevation change. The trail was very busy for us on a Monday morning. The parking lot being full when we arrived should have been telling for us. The views are unbelievable. We had a nice exchange with a park volunteer/staff. The other hikers were very pleasant and engaging. This is a great hike in a great location. The hike took about 2 hours for us….but could take longer or shorter depending on the hiker.

Great Hike!

By TMBlanchette |

Well kept trail. Distances clearly marked, and information along the way. Make sure to use the toilets (at the start) before heading out as there are no facilities along the way (out and back) -- wasn't a problem for us, as we used the toilets before heading out. Great views!

First Timer

By Anita T |

For a first timer hiker, it was a great experience. I was very impressed in
seeing how many people are really into hiking. Try it. You might like it. Highly recommended if you are in the Scottsdale, AZ area.

Great in-and-out hike, lovely views

By Shannon C |

We only had an hour but we still made it to the peak where the best view was. Great hike right in Scottsdale if you have limited time to get out to the mountains. Wish I could do it every Morning. Rock formations are beautiful in the morning light

Enjoyable Hike

By David S |

A very nice hike with wonderful views and great photo opportunities. The trail is very well maintained. The parking area was full but plenty of overflow parking along the road. While there were many hikers on the non-loop trail, it did not seem overly crowded. A great trail for hikers of all skill levels.

The Pinnacle of My Vacation!!!!!

By EFAM6 |

What a hike! It was an incredible get away with the incredible of you. If you are there it's a must-do! I went as early as 5 a.m. to catch the sunrise.

Stop by the pond or climb the head of camelback

By Mandi L |

The parking lot there has many stops and scenic views. Stop by the pond, we saw baby ducks in the water. Then we climbed the back of the head of the camel to see the "hole in the rock". Excellent breezes from the top! Stairs aid you and kids did the walk too.

Wonderful

By She Sue |

It was beautiful and well maintained. The volunteers were very friendly and kind. We went on a Saturday and the farmers market was very close and that was great too!

Great views!

By Laura A |

This was a wonderful place to take a walk. The views were amazing.I didn't make it to the top, coming from the flat east coast the altitude did me in, but it was still spectacualr.

Afternoon hike

By Christine S |

We walked the entire way out and back. Fairly easy going out, more difficult coming back since. We saw people running, children and older couples so it’s great for all ages and physical levels. It was a cool day with a nice breeze. Summer months this would be a much more difficult hike. ☀️ Take water and wear a hat and sunglasses. Beautiful views!! 😍

Easy to moderate with classic dessert views

By James Hytner |

Easy to moderate 3.5 mile total trail with classic rock formations, cactus and reptiles. Some cool stop off points that point out and identify surrounding rock formations. A good morning or later afternoon hike - very little mid day shade.

Beautiful trail!

By Justine and Matthew Metzler |

We went to Pinnacle Peak early for a hike and were so happy we did it. It’s a fairly easy trail at parts. It is not flat except for a few small parts. We did up to the 1.5 mile mark because after that it says it is more strenuous. It took us about 90 minutes to walk to that marker and back. Bring a lot of water and get there earlier because it does get crowded. The views are gorgeous! Definitely a good hike for beginners, but also enjoyable for more advanced hikers!

Nice hike

By AJ C |

My wife and I did this hike starting at the Four Seasons. It is a gain of roughly 950 feet.If you go all the way to the end you will go up and down in elevation.Well worth the time it took. The trail head has restrooms and visitor info.Take water with you though. We did the hike on a Sunday morning and was not very crowded

Great Hike with amazing views

By aavenner |

We went nice and early and it was still pretty busy. We spent about an hour hiking to the top and then back down. Great spots for photos and breaks along the way. Amazing views from different vantage points. Pretty easy hike but definitely a steep incline at the beginning.

Great hike with some nice views

By SLaurenE |

This was a great hike with a nice worn path and just the right amount of challenge going up and down the trails. Some beautiful plants along the way with some informative signage. Great views.

Fairly strenuous hike

By RoBertie |

Do this one early in the morning if the weather is going to get hot. Fairly strenuous up and down hike but with beautiful views.

Wonderful views

By Thelrose 🐾 |

This is a lovely park but if you decide to hike to the hike it can be steep. You need a lot of water but will be rewarded with marvelous views. No dogs are allowed on trail.

Great views - not too strenuous

By EA913 |

We were staying at the nearby Four Seasons, which has it's own private walking path directly to the trail head.

Free admission, so it gets crowded on weekends.

The time to summit was roughly 20 mins with a medium pace. Mostly switch backs and no real "climbing". Saw many joggers and a few families with young children going much slower.

Recommended if in the area.

Easy access, nice views, close to urban

By John H |

This is a medium bit of exercise (out + back) along, but not to the top of the Peak. Much parking, good birding at base. Can be windy, and parts in the shade of the Peak, so dress appropriately. - Fairly busy trail

Nice Hike, Strenous at the End

By mek99 |

The hike at Pinnacle Peak was very enjoyable until we turned around and faced quite a strenuous climb back uphill. To be fair, there are signs near the end of the trail warning that the trail is strenuous from there on. We chose not to believe the sign and found that the return trip was quite a challenge. The views are lovely, however, and certainly worth the hike.

"Beautiful Trail"

By jaylbay |

This is a must for visitors. The beauty and breathtaking views of the surrounding areas are different at every angle as you traverse the sometimes tough climb. Go as far as you like or finish the mile and one half journey. Just know that you need to make it back before sunset.

Fun hike

By Bonnie and Scot... F |

Perfect hike, lots of ups and downs doable for all fitness levels. My favorite hike in the area, would highly recommend it.

Beautiful area

By Alloverhits |

Being in the area Pinnacle Peak really was an outstanding experience.

Lots to see and lots of trails - also excellent road bike roads in the area.

Exercise and beauty

By Jeanette P |

This is worth a trip. You can't beat an activity that will provide you with exercise and a great view. It isn't a hard trail. There were all levels there. If it got to be too much people just turned around and headed back. It is not a loop. It's appx. 3.5 miles and you should finish in 1.5 - 2 hours. Be sure to bring water. I had about 17 oz. and drank all of mine. Sunscreen and hats also a must. No dogs on the trail but they do allow horses.

Good climb, great views

By Itsus6 |

Very nice park with well developed trails and signs identifying where you are on the trail, as well as many of the plants that are along the trail. The trail is an out and back with a lot of incline/steps at about the half way part, so a lot of downhill that is then climbing back up.

Perfect Family Hike

By Lisa836 |

This park offers a moderate hike to the "peak", which not the top, but as far as the peak ascends. From here, you can turn back or continue on the one way trail where the hiking becomes a little more challenging (switchbacks, more "rugged" terrain). Total trail is a two mile hike out and returning to start for a four mile round trip. "Peak" is not quite to the one mile mark from the start. Nice trail. Shade at the beginning for those who turn back sooner to wait. Ranger available with nature displays, too.

Busy well groomed trail!

By ChelsBe |

Hiked with my husband and had a good time, but we as not super fit people found it pretty challenging! Pinnacle is more of a trail, lots up up, down and around. Not your average hike where the climb down is a little less strenuous; throughout the Pinnacle trail there are significant ups and downs. There were some great views of beautiful homes and a golf course along the way as well. The trail was well groomed with wide paths which weren’t very sandy, so footing was good. We saw many running with what they made look like ease, though I couldn’t even imagine doing that. The overall hike was more challenging than we’d thought it would be based off other reviews. It was also a very busy trail with lots of people, so be prepared for lots of yielding to others. Overall it was something to see, but we preferred the Sunrise Peak/Sunrise Trailhead for the traditional hike and better nature views.

Love this hike

By charris724 |

This is a groomed hike with spectacular views. We take out of town company here often. The grounds at the start are planted with natural plants that are gorgeous in the spring. Worth the drive.

great views!

By LAINEY C |

what a wonderful place to bring your out of town guests! Beautiful at sunrise and sunset. Wear good shoes, a bit rocky, pebbly. Take your camera, maybe a bit of wildlife off the trail.

Good urban area exercise

By FarAway20987004532 |

This is a urban hike most suitable for exercise. The views are of golf courses and roof tops. First half is nice for families but do not expect to do the s entire trail. There are many runners and a lot of slow go marching due to crowds.

The sunrise is wonderful

By Reganjca |

There are several different levels to the variou hiking trails. We are pretty avid morning walkers and this is a great place to have any type of walk or jog you desire. The views are pretty great and the nature and wildlife is always changing. We happen to see a beautiful eagle on this mornings walk.

Not horribly difficult, nice views

By SomeNYCGuy |

We did this hike somewhat early on an August day, and it got pretty darn hot. The earlier you get there, the better. The trail people were present, the hike was well-marked with a couple scenic view areas where you could sit. We say some lizards and birds, and nice scenes. We opted to turn around at the 1 mile marker because of the heat, and we had already gone through half our water, and from the map it seemed like the last portion of the additional 0.75 miles would require a decent uphill trek.

My only complaint is that while there were great views, there were just so many houses (albeit well-spaced) around that it sort of felt like I was looking out on neighborhoods. You have to look past that land development onto the mountains beyond.

There was plenty of parking, but we went on a Monday morning.

Over all, I enjoyed it, and would do it again. I would just go earlier and bring more water and some salty snacks.

Great Climb in Greater Phoenix

By John W |

My wife and I wanted to get some exercise on a non-golf day, so we thought the hike up Pinnacle Peak would be fun. It was. I think the information we had before we set out that day said that it was a beginner to moderate climb, but it was all of that and more. It was a hike and didn't require climbing, but there were times that it became somewhat challenging. Granted, my wife and I are both in our 60's, challenging for us might not be the same for a person in their 20's or 30's. Still, it was all walking and not climbing.

It was fun, a great workout, and I look forward to doing it again on our next visit to Scottsdale.

Nicely marked trail

By Sue B |

Great place for a hike. Different species of plants and critters are highlighted on various signs along the trail. Great Views!

Fun little hike

By Charles S |

Coming from Tacoma this weather is much warmer so I was at the trailhead by 06:30. The drive is easy with a nice parking lot at the hike site. I enjoyed this hike because these views are not like home. The early morning desert with its long vistas are quite beautiful. The only drawback were all the houses so close to the park. I guess this could be difficult but I didn't find it to steep. If you're in town for a few days do it take your time and enjoy the views.

Unreal hike!

By Northernprairiedog4 |

Amazing hike to enjoy a AZ sunset! 3.5 miles up and back. Pro tip: At least get to a summit as you could get caught in valley or exit trailhead and miss the sunset. Either way, it’s a beautiful hike. Moderate to Strenuous. Can’t miss!

Interesting hike

By fishing_crazy5500 |

My wife and I decided to give this a try the other day. The temperature was around 60 when we started the hike. A good temp to hike in. The trail has both flat and elevated parts to it as you are going up the side of Pinnacle Mountain when you start out. You then hike around the mountain once you reach the highest point of the trail. You do not go all the way to the top of the mountain. We did not do the whole hike. We went about half way as it is a hike where you hit a dead end and have to then come back the same way you came from. We enjoyed it and the views are pretty nice from higher up. The trail has signs telling you about the plants that are along the trail. The parking filled up pretty quick and we got there around 9:00 AM.

Beautiful views

By drinaely |

We hiked here with our 5 and 7 year old and they did great. It was very busy but we were able to stay out of the way of the serious hikers/joggers for the most part. Definitely recommend for a family hike. It seems like it will take longer than it does.

Gorgeous Scenery, Good Trail Conditions, Crowded

By IlliniTrav |

We recently moved to Phoenix and have hiked on quite a few trails. So far, the Pinnacle Peak Trail has been a favorite due to the scenery and good trail conditions. It appeared that this trail was planned out well - some other trails that we've hiked seemed like they had turned into trails just because a lot of people had walked there. The trail conditions were relatively good, with steps and not a lot of the loose rock and gravel that we've noticed on other trails. There are no forks, so easy to follow.
There are distance signs every quarter mile so that you know how far you've hiked. We walked until the end of the trail, which was a ways beyond the 1.75 marker, so I'm guessing that the trail is about two miles each way. There are also little numbered markers every so often, which I'm assuming is a way to easily locate hikers if they run into a problem. Towards the end of the trail, there is a sign that says "Strenuous Beyond This Point." If you've had enough, this would be a good point to turn around. Curiously, there was no sign on the return that said 'easy beyond this point' :-)
It took us one hour to reach the end of the trail, and an hour and ten minutes to return. It was definitely a challenge because of all the up and down.
We arrived at the parking lot at about 9:15 on a weekday, and were lucky to get one of the few remaining spaces. In the beginning, the trail was very crowded, but the crowds thinned out as we hiked.
Very much in the open, but with a few shady spots on the north side and behind some big rocks - bring sunscreen and water.

Beautiful View - Great exercise

By chuckieV |

We used to live near this landmark peak and we hiked the trail on more than one occasion. It is NOT for the faint of heart but it's not exactly mountain climbing either. If you are looking to experience the flavor of the desert and the surrounding area you will love the experience of Pinnacle Peak. The peak itself if visible from most areas in the valley and it's fun to tell friends and family that you've "climbed pinnacle peak". Enjoy.

Great Hike!

By CKay711 |

Pinnacle Peak was a great hike! It is moderate difficulty with a portion being strenuous. It is a busy trail-lots of people on it. Some running. The views are great. Take water and sunscreen. If you do the entire trail it will take about two hours.

Child friendly hike in Phoenix

By TheSunnyTraveller21 |

The hike was amazing. The trail was so well maintained. The views where incredible. We took lots of photos. It had a very good visitor centre. It is a very long hike. Come prepared with lots of water. I would recommend if you have younger children don't expect to go to the end. But my 2 children over 7 made it. Good luck.

Great trail, great views.

By Sally Jane K |

Really well maintained and well used hiking trail. Everything is labeled. Not overly strenuous. My advice is walk up to the highest point (there's a sign) and then turn around and walk back. The rest of the trail after that is nothing new.

Love this hike!

By Bonnie M |

A great place to hike! About 2 miles round trip, up and down 2 mountains. Lots of people but really fun. Very beautiful and challenging but not overwhelming. We recommend taking this hike while in the Phoenix area.

Good hike with well maintained trail

By Bill M |

Some elevation gain so not easy but a very scenic, well maintained trail. A good moderate workout that is popular with many visitors. The surrounding houses and golf course add to a generally very interesting hike.

Excellent, pretty easy hike.

By WingsOverWorld |

Great hike, even if you go half way. Excellent views and interpretive signs along the way. Saw a few lizards!

Hike the peak

By Chases G |

We always do the pinnacle peak hike when we visit Scottsdale. This is a popular place so you may end up parking in the road. There are bathrooms there, and bring water.

Great hike

By steven f |

Great hike
Wonderful place to go for the day. It’s very crowded on the weekends and holidays. Beautiful views from the top

great place for a walk

By Ron & Jean A |

The park is free but accepts donation. Nice walk to the top, not too difficult, and had markers of flora and fauna. The views were awesome, except for the overdevelopment of the valley!

Busy and Rude- AVOID!!!

By AJ1234IN |

Desert park in Scottsdale surrounded by development. Grossly inadequate facilities for the typical weekend crowds, like minimal parking and just a single Men's toilet (yup- ONE toilet!). Trail hike is 'rewarded' not by desert vistas but by views of Scottsdale sprawl in every direction. And despite signs for runners to yield to hikers on the trail, many runners are rude or even dangerous. Although a runner myself (inc marathons), during a recent trail hike with friends I was brushed by several runners and once knocked over FROM BEHIND by an out-of-control runner. Park staff totally disinterested in addressing this situation. Many better area parks to spend your time, like South Mountain, McDowell, Cave Creek, or Usery.

Perfect level of difficulty

By Victoria L |

Really enjoyed our hike. The temperature in October was perfect. Just the right level of difficulty to get some exercise but not just be exhausted. Several scenic views of the valley. Definitely not for people who have a hard time with stairs.

Climbing gear

By Anna-M |

You need to bring with you climbing gear in here. This is not an easy trail but a very testing climb.

Great hike with beautiful views

By bamagal92 |

I really enjoyed this hike. I would recommend doing it any time outside of the summer months. The trail on the back end from the top gets really tough with multiple steps that you climb on your way down and back up. This was a bit hard for me because by the time I was climbing back up it was around 115 degrees. There are a plenty of people around on the trail so if there was an emergency, you could get help pretty fast. I would not recommend for anyone who is not acclimated to the heat. I don't think this would be an issue in the fall, winter, or spring. Really amazing views!!!

Nice Hiking Trails

By David H |

We walked to the hiking trail from our hotel on Saturday morning. Although this is a popular spot we found the trails well develop and safe along with a nice welcome center

Pinnacle Peak

By digpal |

Great views of the surrounding area; it’s 1.7 mile hike each way. Well maintained trails; the first mile is akin to climbing 20 stories.

First hike at 72, exhilarating!

By David S |

If I can do it, you can too. Incredible vistas, friendly hikers at every turn. Don't forget water!! D. Slater, New City, NY

Nice place to hike for hikers of all skill levels

There is a well-defined hiking trail that goes up, around and down Pinnacle Peak. Hikers can go at their own pace and there are a few designated areas to rest and/or take pictures along the trail. Great views and fun place to hike and tennis shoes or hiking boots are recommended. It will likely take approximately 2-3 hours to complete the full trail, down and back.

Arrive early and often

By Ctm T |

Mid morning crowds on the trail and on the local side street for parking are too large.
Arrive early, enjoy the walk/hike and the great views.

Excellent Trail - Popular - and moderately difficult

By amelulu |

Excellent trail for all levels as if it becomes too strenuous, you can turn around. It is well maintained and offers ample rest spots to take in beautiful views of the park, overlooks of golf course and neighborhood and to catch your breath if needed.

The trail offers educational signs about the desert creatures and landscape, plants etc. they have a jr ranger program for children (actually all ages 😊).

Be sure to take plenty of water and snacks, hiking sticks, etc.

My suggestion is if you don't want to do the full trail from end to end to avoid the long climb back to the visitor center, that you go as far as Grand View or Owl's Rest and then turn around.

This is a very popular trail with many visitors but there's plenty of room for all. If you don't like crowds while hiking this isn't the place for you.

Enjoyable 3.5 mile hike, arrive early

By All-InclusiveCouple |

We enjoyed the picturesque views from Pinnacle Peak and would recommend it to others including young and old alike. We were told to arrive early and I am glad we did.. there is limited parking. Bring water.

The hike itself was not terribly difficult even for novices, but it had enough elevation changes to make it interesting. It is 1.75miles from start to finish and then your retrace your way back to the beginning. The last quarter mile or so was a bit more work (especially on the way back up), and the entire trip took us maybe 1.5 hours.

Moderate hike with a good view

By PDXDevin |

This is a moderate hike that is a one way and back trail. The last part coming back is the most difficult and there is a sign that alerts you to when the trail goes from moderate to difficult. I was able to do the entire trail, but my girlfriend turned around at the highest point. We went on a weekend in the morning and it was quite busy, which was the only downside. There are two places with beautiful views as well.

A hardy hike

By Kem B |

This is a nice hike. The trail is in excellent condition with easy footing and steps throughout the hike. The hike was different in that the trail takes you up the Peak's side and then down on the other side all the way to street level in DC ranch area. Then you turn around and return. The views are excellent in all directions. I was disappointed the trail didn't go higher up to or close to the top of the peak itself. I'd recommend this hike.

Great Hike

By peglegtraveler |

Moderate hike with some up and down. Beautiful views of golf course, large homes, vegetation and valley. Really enjoyed the hike.

Beautiful vistas! Easy to follow moderate trail. Well worth the roughly four mile round trip!

By C6095BIelizabethg |

This trail is about 2 miles or so each way. It is not a loop trail, so you need to walk back the same way you came. It is very easy to follow and extremely well marked and there are even several places with benches along the way. There are some steeper areas that you need to climb through, but almost any fit person can do this trail. It is a perfect hike for people who are afraid of heights because the trail is wide enough and has fencing along the steepest areas.

There are 90 Markers on the trail, as well as quarter mile markers, so it is easy to track your progress. At around marker 76, there is a sign indicating that the remaining terrain requires strenuous climbing. Don’t be cowed, its very similar to the terrain on the trail up to that point.

Pinnacle peak is a misnomer. You do not hike to the peak, but instead hike a lot of switchbacks around the mountain, but you are rewarded with beautiful views along the way. FYI The trail can get a little crowded at peak hours (although never nearly as bad as Camelback).

There are restrooms at the trailhead, but you should definitely bring at least two bottles of water per person. Two of my boys (both competitive runners) flew through this trail and there are some intrepid runners who run it as a matter of course, but there is enough elevation gain to make this trail fun for hikers too and to make this a moderate rather than “easy” hike for most.

BEAUTIFUL VIEWS without a painful hike.

By TheWanderingRealtor |

Offering stunning views without a rigorous hike.
There was plenty of parking and basic amenities offered on location.
Although we did not complete the entire trail we did make it to the top , which was not too challenging.

Great Scenery

By cherid1 |

Very nice area. We started up the peak, but turned around. A little too steep for us! We did spot a rock climber. That was awesome to watch.

Beautiful hike!

By Christina M |

Beautiful hike! It’s not very hard BUT you need to make sure you’re wearing appropriate footwear. I had slide-on sneakers that didn’t have a good grip and I slipped a few times on the gravel.

Nice Open Trail

By madbeck |

I really enjoyed this hike. Lots of views. Well maintained, wide path. Out and back hike. Easy to get there from Scottsdale. We visited in early March on a weekday afternoon and had no trouble with parking. Very clean. Wildflowers were blooming. Absolutely beautiful. Took us about 2 hours roundtrip. 3.15 miles roundtrip.

Go early, take water!

By NoFranchisesAllowed |

I am from the east coast and used to the Shenandoah national forest hiking, which is shady, the only hard part about this is full sun in the desert, definitely go early if you are not used to being out in the desert! This hike is easy from the perspective of well marked, well maintained and not too narrow (I am seriously afraid of heights). We got there at 10 am on a Sunday (late May-amost 100 F weather) and although not too crowded, it was about 2 hours too late due to the heat. We did the entire trail, but it got hard due to our lack of experience in the desert. I'm sure it was more crowded earlier as there were cars parked on the road from earlier in the morning, however when i got there, there were spaces in the parking lot, which meant it is best to early due to the heat. Take water and either no backpack or a small light, you don't want to be overweighted. It's 1 3/4 mile each way (not a loop). It took us about 2 1/2 hours as I had to stop on the way back on the up hills (i'm 52, in good yoga shape, but cardio is not my favorite). The nice think about this trail is that there are section of both uphill and downhill, it's not 100% uphill, then downhill, it is up and down the whole way. There were young, old, runners, slow hikers, so this is good for all. If I had gone earlier in the morning, i likely wouldn't have had to stop on the return uphills. I have not done Camelback, but it is said to be easier than Camelback.

Beautiful views

By Arlene W |

Great mid-range hike, loved the views. Always remember to bring water on walks/hikes. Being a one way in - out hike, was easy to turn back around if needed.

A moderate hike

By trytogetawayoften |

From the trailhead, you look up at hikers going up the mountain and say - looks steep and rough. We started out and it is a more gradual climb than it appears. About 3/4 miles into the hike and you reach the summit. The trail does continue farther, but it is not a loop trail, so go as far as you want, then turn around and come back. There are many signs identifying the various plants along the trail. They have distance markers every 1/4 mile as well as markers for emergencies (50 in the first mile). The trail is well marked and the parking lot fills up in the late morning. It is free and there are bathrooms, water fountain, and ranger station at the trailhead. A good trail for all abilities.

Beautiful hike

By LAClarke1201 |

Great trails, and easy drive. The trail was easy for newbies like me, and it was very scenic. We are looking forward to more visits!

Easy hike

By Sri_PR |

The hike was easy covering a distance for 4 miles tro snf fro.
The trail is well maintained. A little up and down the hill. Carry water and a cap.

Explore the Desert

By dalycalifornia |

Pinnacle Peak Park is a great way to explore all the desert has to offer. From the "lush" vegetation to the absolutely stunning views under starkly blue skies. This is a terrific hike. It's fairly easy if you take in all the resting/view points. The hike can be as strenuous as you like and scenic the whole way!

Slightly Overrated

By pete7863 |

My wife and I did this hike while staying in Scottsdale. The hike was okay in terms of length and difficulty. However, it did not seem worthy of the high praise it receives in the other reviews here. There are plenty of other solid options as far as trails go nearby that aren’t nearly as crowded and offer even better views!

Best hike in Scottsdale area

By Simon D |

We stayed at the Four Seasons to have easy access to pinnacle peak and are glad that we did. The hike offers a gentle climb along a very senic trail, unlike other hikes in the area there are a number of people along the trail including regular volunteer patrols who are also very informative. The views offer a mix of city, golf and mountains and change in both directions so you are never uninspired. There were a few runners on the trails and everyone is very friendly. All in all it was a wonderful experience to hike the trails for a few days and left us feeling energized for the day ahead.

Better than Expected

By jehenson81 |

I didn't realize when I chose to visit Pinnacle Peak that there was a hike involved but I am glad there was as unneeded some exercise after a huge breakfast and lots of driving. The gentleman at the park office was super nice and happily answered my questions and the beginning and end of my hike. It isn't a loop so you go 1.75 miles to marker 92 and then turn around and come back. The steepest section is the last .25 miles before you turn around but you don't really notice until you are going back up it. There are plant information signs throughout the hike so you can find out the names of all the flora (my favorites are the teddy bear cholla and the strawberry hedgehog). The whole hike takes about two hours normally however I was able to do it in an hour twenty. There are two viewpoints along the trail which make bike rest areas if you need them. Be sure to have lots of water; it is dry out there and no water or facilities to available at all during the hiking.

Great hike

By PhantomProctor_VT |

We picked this place to hike after reveiwing a few different options online. Altough the trail was crowded it was a great hike!

I love hiking in Arizona

By Cats Pajamas |

Went for a nice evening hike the weather was perfect. The sun was setting as we left. We stopped after we got off the trail and just enjoyed the view for a while. The sky is so beautiful in Arizona. There is just nothing else like it.
The trails are nice. The desert is so peaceful.

Our favorite trail

By michael |

Still our favorite hike in the Scottsdale area. Go early to avoid crowds. Beautiful scenery, cacti, flowers, rock formations. Not too strenuous.

Nice morning hike

By Swankysilver |

Great hike— nice trail and on the easy side! Path well marked and not too steep, with a few steps and switch-backs, making it pleasant. Views are beautiful! Restroom facilities clean. Bring water as it gets hot as the sun comes up— no shade on this path! Parking lot is small— people park on the road leading into the park. Popular spot, but lovely way to start the day!!

Great Trail Beautiful Views

By Traveler 101 |

We’ve been twice during our visit to Phoenix, and really enjoyed it both times. The trail is so well groomed and the various plant life provides different colors you won’t see on most state park trails in the area. It’s a fairly easy walk with plenty of areas to stop rest and take in the view. Parking for us both times was fine, but I can see where peak days you may have to park a bit further out and walk in.

Peaked

By Kiamouse |

Great hike.
Good parking, good facilities “ bathroom “
This is a moderate hike if you’re conditioned. Beautiful views. Definitely recommend you bring water, sunscreen and maybe a hat.

Good family hike

By Sarah R |

We were looking for an easy family hike since we were carrying our one year old with us. It took us about 3-4 hours to complete. The hotel said this is an "easy" hike but we thought it was a bit harder than easy (note that we are both athletic). Great views, looking down on the big houses in the area.

Breathtaking!

By Mary L |

A great hiking trail, only a brief walk from the Four Seasons Scottsdale. The welcome station at the foot of the trail offered information, water, restrooms and some much-needed shade in which to rest. As other reviewers have observed, this venture might best be started early in the day, as the heat soon became oppressive, even in May. The climb is moderate, the views are lovely.

Great family hime

By Maureen H |

We had a lovely hike. Gorgeous views, very well maintained and marked. A little crowded today, probably bc so many are on break right now. I recommend going at sunrise.

If we did it, you can do it!

By Jenny Z |

My Husband and I hiked this in no time at and it was one of the best things we did on our trip to Scottsdale. We are 50+ and not in shape! The views at the top are amazing!

Great hike

By Kerry A |

Quite an elevation change - avid hikers will love it, others should take their time! NOT a loop - the way in is the way out.

Crowded but still worth it

By ValerieinVB |

Bring water!! And don’t climb higher than your ability. My knees told me when to turn back but I still had beautiful views and a bit of a workout.

great hike

By yehdan |

we hit this hike mid morning and was a great activity.
at the entrance we were lucky to see 2 rattle snakes, very cool.
got to see some beautiful views while hiking here.
all the kids loved this hike, from ages 5 all the way up to 15.
must bring hats and water.
this hike is not too hard and not too easy. was just right.

Great hiking!

By Kimberlee K |

This trail is not a loop so you go to the end and return to the beginning of the trail The last part of the trail is the most difficult so you can decide whether or not you go the whole trail. Beautiful views. Very busy on the weekends and not a dog friendly trail. Dogs are not allowed here.

Surprising hike

By Pamela A |

First hike while visiting- Got there at 730 am and the parking lot was already full. Seeing the hill and switch backs totally was like we can do this. After climbing up to the top- you then climb down the backside- and back up another hill- then down that one. Then turn around and do it all again going back. Def consider this a moderate hike. It was beautiful- great easy trail to follow.

Hiking heaven

By tomellis6680 |

Did the hike on a Saturday morning in August. I completed the whole hike but be warned, when it says “Strenuous” it really means it! The views are beautiful and it’s a worthwhile morning spent up there!

Excellent hike.

By jonathb5 |

If you don’t mind a large number of people and suburban views, this is an excellent out and back (2 miles each way) hike. What makes it special are: the quality of the Trail, the rich variety of desert vegetation and botanical species, and the beautiful Mountain View’s. If you do the full out and back, you will ascend approximately 1,000 ‘ which is a good work out and the experience is memorable.

Beautiful BUT TOO MANY LOUD OLDER WOMAN HIKERS

By perlygirly |

BEAUTIFUL spot however unable to fully enjoy with all the local runners, and older women loudly chatting.

Nice shorter hike options

By Scott and Mary Veal |

This was a nice place for a shorter hike with great views. Our kids, ages ten and twenty, enjoyed the hike and views. This place had a nice bathroom. Don't forget to bring a water bottle!

Scenic

By Marc N |

Easy access- great scenery- walking trails available- plenty of parking- recommended for good weather only- facilities available

Beautiful fitness level hike

By Globalist |

Busy but worth it, the views are great and the hike is fairly challenging. Running/trail running style. There is a medium amount of parking plus bathrooms at the trail head. Warning, the trail is not a circle, it ends and you turn around and come back. No services at the trail end.

Stunning Hike!

By Brianna S |

What a great moderate hike with stunning views! Perfect for first time or seasoned hikers! Go in the morning when it’s cooler out!

Beautiful hike with great views- love the blue skies!

By moements |

Easy little hike with amazing views of the desert and beautiful properties!
Blue skies and cool vegetation to look at.
Definitely a good idea to bring water and decent trail shoes.
Go midweek to avoid crowds!

nice climb

By Marjorie R |

Gorgeous area. However, a bit crowded and very popular. They have altered rules during covid and no dogs allowed.

Best view in the valley

By mahccooper |

This is a wonderful hike and the view is awesome.
Parking can be tight.
Go in the cool of the day.
Must be an average hiker.

Great hike. Beware of the hours

By WorldTravelers2000 |

This is my second time on this 2 mile trail, up and down the mountain. Beautiful views and the trail is well maintained. Bring water or fill your water bottle at the trail head. Beautiful cacti against a mountain drop. Several rest spots along the trail. Easy hike. The trail and car parking lot have opening hours and will close (6:45) today. Apparently people on trail after hours will be fined. It’s not a long trail and 1.5-2 hours “normal” pace should do it.

Beautiful Place

By ehbeer4 |

We loved this park, there were so many trails to choose from, it's a good place for all levels of hikers and age groups, it has beautiful scenery and wide open places.

The Views Are Great

By kuehnklausm |

We have been here several times and this park is close to our resort so a regular stop for a hike and a run. You can go easy or go extreme whatever you like. The trails run up Pinnacle Peak and around so bring water, hat, and sunscreen for sure. The views and the flora on this trail are amazing. An occasional view of the local wild life is to be expected as well. A great place to experience the natural part of the American southwest inside a really nice park close to water :)

Nice trail for a hike

By brigida1998 |

This was a great hike. There was ample parking and a nice visitor center with restrooms. We felt it was fairly easy until we turned around to come back. It was a steeper climb on the way back. Great for families as the terrain isn’t too difficult. The gravel was a bit slippery. Not sure how people could run the trail.

Fun, easy hike

By Maverick1904 |

Great 3.5 mile roundtrip hike. Plenty of parking in the morning although the lot was pretty full by the time I finished. Well marked trail with decent elevation. Beautiful views of the surrounding area. Very fun and relaxed hike.

Great trail to hike!

By 78zmedina |

I went by myself at 5 am to hike this trail. It was beautiful to see the sunrise. So glad I went even though I was nervous. Take water to drink. This is not a loop trail. Take your time if you are not a hiker. Definite must do!

Thanksgiving Hike

By Tyler B |

I went with a few friends to take a sunset hike this past Thanksgiving. The views are definitely beautiful, and it’s a great sunset spot. The only downside, and why I inevitability give 4 stars, is that the hours were pretty short. There was still a good amount of sunlight left and the rangers were shutting down the park and closing the gates. I will hand it to them, there were very friendly. They also let us stop for a minute and take pictures before we obliged and hiked down with them. However, it would have been nice to finish the hike to the top. But I digress. Just check the hours before you go, because they’re a little early sometimes.

Very cool to see!

By Mel4osu |

We did not walk the trail but just walked around the small area they have - took lots of pictures. Very cool to see.

Lovely Trail- Awesome Views

By Janet F |

Nice hike with great views. It is a climb to the top, so be aware. We hike all the time so it was no problem for us. Come early to be assured of a parking spot.

Fantastic North Scottsdale trail

By Jaime L |

Fantastic out and back 3.5 mile
trail circling Pinnacle Peak. Great trail to introduce tourists to the beautiful Sonoran desert and surrounding mountain views. Many desert plants are marked along the trail and they have a visitor center at the entrance with some animal exhibits. The trail is well maintained and has some fantastic scenery showcasing North Scottsdale. Some elevation gain but not terribly strenuous. Large, mature saguaros and huge granite boulders highlight this hike. As you get towards the backside, you will see several golf courses and the huge multi million dollar homes below. I have seen a lot of wildlife on this trail throughout the years-Gila monsters, chuckwallas, rattlesnakes, and a desert tortoise! Can be a crowded trail so go early or during the weekday to avoid the crowds. Don’t forget sunscreen, your camera and plenty of water!

Great Low-Risk Hike

By Robert R |

This well-maintained path involves constant elevation changes and beautiful suburban views. It can be busy on weekends, but there is usually enough parking. Nice restrooms and water available at the starting point.

Lots of Ups and Downs

By harvman |

My wife and I had a couple of hours towards the end of a day nearby so we thought we would check it out and challenge ourselves. In fairness, we didn't know much about the climb/trails, but knew when the park closed so set our watches and just started walking and climbing. As we neared the top of Pinnacle and assuming the climb was over, we soon saw a meandering trail that descended back down from Pinnacle and then back up a neighbouring hill.....was this a part of the hike? We stopped another couple and sure enough, Yep - both climbs were part of one longer trail - so the challenge continued.
The trail was very well marked and a good climb with the many ups and downs and repeat as you walk out - then come back doing everything in reverse until you get back to the parking lot. (free parking and admission).
Bring some water - there is a fountain at the base that is helpful - but a canteen would be great. Leave yourself an hour and a half to 2 hours - although there are runners out there that are no doubt crushing this in under an hour.
Some great views and good exercise.

Great Hike with Beautiful Views of the Valley

By Jim M |

Pinnacle Peak is moderate in difficulty. Hiking the full trail covers around 4 miles round trip. There are several climbs and descents along the trail but for the most part its not overly strenuous. There are several places to stop and rest if you desire and you can turn around at any point and make it a short hike if you choose. From the upper portions of the trail you get great views of the northen part of the Valley of the Sun. Unlike Camelback Mountain this is a trail where families with young children (5-10 years old) can hike comfortable. The trail is very well marked. Make sure you take water with you!

Great hiking area with fantastic views

By DISBOFFG41 |

Took an early morning hike which has a quick elevation gain in a small distance. Well worth the time to hike the area.

Great morning hike!

By RoadtripperColl |

This is a moderate hike with changing elevations and great views! The trails are easy to follow and clear, I went with two people who are not big hikers and a little out of shape and they enjoyed it. Go on the earlier side to avoid crowds and be sure to bring enough water even in the winter.

Hike

By LSWyatt61 |

Very enjoyable hike. Beautiful scenery. Challenging hike but not overly difficult. I would do this again!

Gradually steep, beautiful views and always crowded.

By CMoss13 |

This is a favorite for many. The length is unclear, since one can do a quick up and down for about a mike and a half, or go up 400’, down 400’, then up 500’, then down 500’, The back up 400’ and then down 400’. Doing a quick up and down is what we older folks recommend. Trail is narrow, filled with families and young children and quite crowded. The views are quite lovely.

Great but didn’t go far

By Baisygirl |

My husband and I went on on this trail but only made it to the first lookout. I am not an experienced hiker and do not like heights. There was one spot where we had to walk past a boulder on one side of the path and nothing on the other (except for a steep cliff!) and at that point I sort of freaked and said I didn’t want to continue. Husband kept going then came back to tell me the trail was fine up there so we both continued for a while. It was very impressive at the lookout but the trail was long so we didn’t continue. Maybe someday!

Great Views - Moderate Hike

By TutinsPony |

This is a moderate hike in a well kept path. Great views that change as you go up and down on a hike that takes around two hours. The total distance was 3.2 miles with a total elevation climb of just under 900’. Even in the winter make sure you take enough water.

Great Hike

By ketadog |

We liked this trail so much that we hiked it twice while in Scottsdale! Moderate hike that takes about 3 hours roundtrip with a very good view from the top of the trail. Beware that the trail is very popular so getting there in the morning is a good idea!

Fun family hike with amazing views

By 3girlsrule |

This hike was a wonderful way to ring in the new year with our family. The park is so nice and clean. The hike was heavily trafficked with very friendly people. The views are amazing.

Easy stroll with amazing vistas

By billybob101 |

4 of us headed up for this straightforward but breathtaking walk. Wonderful views as you ascend. Little ones should be fine on this hike, although my youngest fell and scraped his leg on the way down (if we goofing off and running when he shouldn’t).

Plants & Scenery were great!

By Cindy H |

moderate trail rating per the internet and I would say that is accurate. Lots of cactus and flowering plants when we hiked it. this trail is well maintained, mostly covered in gravel and has volunteers. Easy parking close by.

I did it & so can you!

By Dawn |

Nice hike...I'm not that physically fit but could still do this hike. There are lots of little "pull off" places to take a little rest along the way. It's not "easy" by any means so still take water because it is definitely a hike! Like others stated, it's not a loop and you have to come back so keep that in mind when deciding how far to go. I just took my time and enjoyed the scenery. People are friendly. I'd say a must do...I love the view you get at each turn around the mountain!

Best Scenic Hike!

By TJ V |

This was by far the most beautiful trail I have ever hiked. It has it all! From Cactus to Mountains to beautiful rock formations.

Great Views, Easy Walk!

By Christine M |

10 out of 10. Nice family activity. Easy trail but you get up high and have great views. We went on a Monday in Feb and no traffic. There were signs everywhere so you could read and learn. You can also do this in just 1-2 hours if that is all you have time for.

Park is beautiful but you do not get to the top of the peak

By ScottRoby |

This is one of the most beautiful places for a nice easy hike. All total in the out and back is about 3.5 miles if you go to the very end of the trail. The incline is not too tough if you are in moderate shape. If you have never been here before, it looks like they have closed off access to the top of the peak. Also it can get crowded with many oblivious hikers who do not get the concept of people passing them when they are hiking slower than molasses.

Easy to moderate hike

By sam |

This was a great starter hike as my first visit to Scottsdale. It took me about 45 minutes for the out and back walk and that includes lots of photo taking and chatting with a couple of other walkers. It was about 9:30 am and enough people to feel safe but not crowded or hurried.
Lots of beautiful plants and scenery to absorb. Very different from hill country, Texas. Felt like I had stepped into a western movie. Loved every second. Take a hat and light jacket... And water. Was pretty chilly and windy that particular am.

One of my favorite hikes

By klutzWestBend |

Did this on a Wednesday morning and parking was at a premium. Once we parked, however, it was not that crowded. Even though signs suggest using alternative. Trails, I say go for it!

First Time Hiker

By kcarbery |

Hiking was not on my 'relaxing' vacation agenda while in AZ, but my brother's girlfriend persuaded me to give it a try. Great experience! Beautiful vistas from any point you stop and rest or take a slug of water. Be warned, however, that once you get to the end of the trail, you have to go ALL THE WAY BACK the same way you came to disembark. Maybe I missed some kind of info sign that stated it, but you'd want to know something like that upfront, right? All in, I'm glad I made the trek!

Great, moderate hike!

By Cindy1695 |

Read all the great reviews that encouraged this hike. The first mile is rolling trails and very comfortable. After one mile, it is a little more up and down - and since it isn’t a loop, felt a little more up on the way back - haha. I did not pursue beyond the sign “strenuous hike ahead” only because it was in the afternoon and on the sunny side of the peak. The trail is very well kept and beautifully designed and built. Scenery is amazing! I loved it.

Our Favorite Hike in the Phoenix Area

By Tommy D |

This is an invigorating 3.5-mile out-and-back hike on the NE edge of Scottsdale, about 15 minutes NE of the Pima exit off the 101 Freeway. The views are great. We are fortunate to live only 30 minutes away, so we have hiked it many times. The trail is well-maintained and tastefully cut into the two hills it spans. It starts with a fairly steep hike up the first hill, followed by a descent. Then you hike up and down the second hill, which is not as steep. Mile-markers track your progress, and you can also use the 88 numbered wildlife markers to roughly gauge your progress. If you are moderately fit, you can complete the 3.5 miles in a little over an hour. Tips: (1) This is desert hiking, which is quite different from cooler, greener climates. There is virtually no shade, and it can be very, very hot. You also won't see much wildlife. (2) If you are going in the summer, start as early as you can. (3) Be sure to bring water! (4) The uphill part up the second hill, just after you turn around, is the most rugged part of the hike. Be prepared for that, and save some energy for the last and steepest part. (5) If you are very fit, you can run the entire way, as quite a few people do. It is a challenging workout. (6) It can be quite busy on weekend mornings in the cooler season, i.e. October through April. If you get there after 8 AM, you will likely have to park on the street. However, there is plenty of street parking.

Beautiful Hike!

Wonderful trail to hike.
Morning walk was wonderful and so beautiful. Moderate exertion, views are amazing. Must see!!

Enjoyed the hike

By wscdds |

Great place for family or individuals with different skill levels. Nice views. Restroom and water fountain facilities available at the trail head which I require!

Wow

By Ken C |

This is a great place to visit and hike. Lots of parking and there were only a few other when we visited. Not overly challenging but not a cake walk either. Lots of gradual ups and downs. The trail was well marked and there were signs along the way naming plants, etc. We visited later in the day so for the first half of the hike we were in the shadow of the mountain. Once we were on the other side it was obviously in the sun. Saw a few birds, rabbit, lizards and some little rodents. Bring water with you fo0r the hike. There are restrooms and water available at the trail head. Lots of great photo opportunities along the way.

Great views, busy trail

By Genevive R |

The trail is one way so you go up and return the same way. It also can get really busy on weekends and in the morning. Trail is well kept and the views are great. It’s a workout and some people go fast so keep that in mind.

Great Short Hiking Trail in North Scottsdale

This is a great shorter hiking trail in North Scottsdale. The trail is very well maintained and has a nice parking lot. It can get very busy at certain times of the day and on weekends as it is a popular tourist stop. The trail, if you go end to end is just about 3.5 miles long. It is not a loop trail. You go up, down, up down and then back. There are some great views including some nice views of a golf course and some large homes. If the parking lot is full when you get there, you can park along the dead end road leading to the parking lot. I would suggest that you take plenty of water with you when you hike this trail. Have fun and be safe. It is possible at certain times of the year that you may hear or encounter snakes on this trail (though it is rare).

Perfect Place For Hiking

By efeld5140 |

The trail is challenging, but not too tough to handle, except if you have disabilities. It is best to do either early in the day. Be sure to bring water.

Scenic Hike

By Karen M |

This trail is a scenic and easy to follow. It can get quite crowded but the others on the trail are friendly and polite. The trail is moderate with the last section being strenuous and you need to be careful and remember that you have to turn around and go back at some point. There is some shade from the mountains along the way but I recommend going early and bringing water. The trailhead has restrooms and a water fill station. Overall a good experience.

A not so tough hike that rewards with gorgeous views.

By godzuki24 |

First, and most important, this trail is a 2mile out and back (4miles RT for the mathematically challenged). The trail goes UP to the (almost) peak, down a bit, back up to Owl's Nest(and second lookout), the gradually down another 3/4 or so miles to the end of the trail.

For those looking for a quick hike to "the top", you can get to the high point and around the back to Owl's Nest, then head back to the parking lot. For a more complete hike, go all the way down the backside and return.

The views are great, but it gets busy in the mornings and mobbed on weekends. A local "guide" described the hike as "A really tough nature walk. But not SO hard. You'll see a lot of Athleta, Lululemon and Hokas out there".

First hike in Scottsdale

By Lorin S |

Easy to find, if you can’t park in lot there’s street parking. Plenty of people on trail of all ages, even joggers. Plenty of picture opportunities. It’s a easy to medium level hike with lots of places to stop and rest.

Great Hike!

By Julie B |

Beautiful views and a pretty good workout too. Enjoyable way to start your day in Northern Scottsdale!

Really cool giant boulders - easy to medium difficulty hike.

By sweetsunshine55 |

This hike kind of surprised us. We researched on the web before going... but didn't realize it was kind of in a neighborhood. A fairly upscale one in fact. Architecturally cool visitor center with bathrooms at base. Medium sized parking lot that filled up early on a weekday. So get there by 8:30 at the latest.

Trail is super well maintained, in fact there were volunteers working on it at several points on our hike. This is a busy trail, decent amount of people on it but it did not subtract from the experience. We took a few water breaks and chatted with other hikers. basically it's two peaks connected to one another. You could climb the first one and quit, or connect over to the other peak and continue. We went to the second one, but everyone told us after marker 76 (I believe it's 76 - the point on second peak where you start to go down at a very steep rate) it gets challenging. steep going down means steep coming up :) People coming up were really panting. We just wanted to have a fun morning hike so turned around at that point. About a 2 mile hike.

Great views of Valley of the Sun and some pretty spectacular homes in the desert. Fav hike we did on this trip.

Easy hike

By happytrailsnyc |

Great hike for a novice in good shape, or just take it easy on your way up, either way the views are spectacular. Easy parking and bathrooms too.

Breathtaking

By SandersFamily |

We visited PPP four years ago, and spent three days there again this year while visiting over spring break. The park is absolutely gorgeous and the staff is friendly and helpful. It's such a peaceful place; we could have stayed the entire day!! We highly recommend Pinnacle Peak Park - it's beauty at its best.

Nice hike with great views

By Joe B |

This is a great trail that’s not as hard as it looks from the base. My friends and I are in our 70’s and made it easily to the top with periodic stops to take pictures. The only disappointment was looking down on all the housing development that surrounds it.

Beautiful morning on top of Pinnacle Peak

By snoopyonthemove |

Moderate hike to ~ 2900 ft and see East Valley unobstructed. Great photo op!👍🏽. Park opens at 7 am. Bring a light breakfast and have it up there.

Nice hike - start early

By NW748 |

We had a nice time on this hike although it was a bit difficult just due to the heat. We started out around 7:30 am and that was even a bit too late for us. It was in the 90’s and so it’s hard to hike the sunny, switchback inclines in that heat. We made sure to bring water. The locals seemed to have no problem, but out of towners need to make sure to start early and bring water. Easy parking. It is not a loop trail but let’s out in a neighborhood or you have to hike back (4 miles round trip). You actually never reach the “peak”, but instead kind of skirt around 2 different “peaks”.

Great workout and beautiful landscape

By Jennifer F |

Awesome hike! It’s strenuous at times, lots of ups and downs. Remember to use the restroom at the trailhead!

Favourite Hike of the week

By Tyke9 |

We did a few hikes in the area, and this was our favourite. Its an out and back and you could turnaround when you wanted, but we went to the very end, which meant that the return journey started with a steep climb, but you didnt need to use your hands like Camelback. Really nice views, a very popular route, with quite a few people running the trail. People had taken water up the trail and left it in strategic places, which is a great idea, that other hikes could do with copying.

Fun Moderately Strenuous Climb ... Pick Your Speed

By CharlieinTexas |

Fun walk, sort of climb, up well cleared paths with lots of identified flora along the way. Great views of the surrounding countryside, other than a couple of golf holes that really take away from the natural beauty. Lots of places to step a few feet off the trail and catch your breath if you feel that is necessary.

Lots of parking.

Only criticism, and it’s not terrible, is that there are a lot of people that jog or semi-run down the path. A number of people seemed annoyed if you don’t get out-of-the-way quick enough. And, many of them don’t know enough to say as they approach “on your right,“ or “on your left,” so you step aside.

Great family hike

By Joe T |

This hike was a great start to our vacation. It offered just the right amount of challenge for our kids. They wanted to up the challenge, after completing this one.

Pinnacle Peak Park is a beautiful hike! A must.

By LetsGoTravling |

We love hiking the amazing Pinnacle Peak Park. The amazing mauve rock formations are our favorite in all of Scottsdale. The boulders are very large and impressive to say the least. The native cactus and other foliage on Pinnacle Peak is also a true delight to the soul.

As far as the eye can see!

By tkb953 |

This was my first "hiking" experience and I really enjoyed it! It is classified as a moderate trail, and there were easy spots, and some not so easy, but I got a great workout in, nonetheless!

Nice trail for all levels.

By Mkctulsa |

Wonderful place for a hike. Good parking. Nice descriptions of plants and schrubs along the way. I recommend going early... it's hot there ya know.

Fun

By travelshooter71 |

Great place to hike and see the views...nicely makes and easy to access and park...definitely one of the places to hike

Moderate hike, beautiful views

By CBug-e |

We chose to tackle Pinnacle Peak over Camelback and I’m glad we did. Great hike, just strenuous enough to feel like you worked off your big, pre-hike breakfast without feeling sore all day. It was crowded at the trailhead (around 8:30 am on a Saturday) but after the initial climb people spread out and it was fine. Be sure to listen for trail runners who seem to come out of nowhere (startled me a few times) and be courteous by walking single file and staying right. We enjoyed the birds eye view of the beautiful homes around Troon golf club. Be sure to use the bathroom at the trailhead before setting out because it will be 2 hours before you return (it’s an out and back trail). And be sure to look up from the trailhead and try to spy rock climbers at the top of the trail. Highly recommend this hike!

from 8 to 80 if healthy

By Chi-Girl |

This is a good, basic hike with high elevations in short period of time. Options to go to top and/or veer off on other trails. Water and restrooms at bottom. Nice, friendly people all say good morning.

Busy during weekends

By 192adelad |

This is an urban hike that gets very busy during weekends. It’s a great hike, with lots of wildlife and cactus plants along the way. However, if you visit during the weekend, you will not have a leisure hike as most people use this trail to exercise. There are lots of runners and fast hikers. We visited with our kids and had to move out of the way lots of times. The hike and views were still very enjoyable.

Nice Walk

By David B |

We found parking relatively close. We had a great hike with great views and photo ops with our Phoenix cousins.

Gorgeous hike with lots of flora!

By Gina P |

Glad we did this - it was kind of different from most hikes in that it had up and down elevation changes throughout, a nice mix of sun and shade, not too strenuous but challenging enough. The best part was all the plants and flowers and shrubs and rock formations; so many colors and textures! It was busy, and we went fairly early in the day, so keep that in mind and watch out for runners. Stay to the right at all times!

Great morning hike

By Jen Z |

Took our family of 5 with small kids. Easy hike for all with pretty views. Lots of runners and we were always in the way.

great view

By Maurica68 |

for sure a park to visit. I really gives you a good view of the dessert and what lives in it. We really enjoyed it but make sure you have enough water with you as it gets hot

Great place to hike

By vickiedge |

This is a great place to hike at all levels. You can pick your trails to go on and go as long or as short as you want. Many places to sit and rest and even eat a lunch. We will definitely be back here.

Great hike up Pinnacle Peak. Moderate hike.

By vixxdog |

This was a moderate hike, but very much enjoyed it. Most could do it within an hour or so. Great workout.

Beautiful, challenging hike for a senior!

By cbonifant |

At almost 69, with some hiking experience, I wasn't prepared for this moderate hike. The views are beautiful, but know that it's not all up, then down. It's up, down, up, down for the entire length of the trail. Not a problem going, but more difficult coming back. Also, went on a Saturday morning before 8 and parking lot was already full. I think this would have been more enjoyable if it had not been 90+ degrees mid-morning. That being said, it was a great challenge and I'm glad I can say I did it. Just not what I was expecting!

Great hiking path

By savemoneyandhavefun |

This was my first visiting this park. It was a great early morning hike. Watch out for snakes. We saw a common king while hiking.

Great Family Hike!

By l0rilien |

We hiked Pinnacle Peak on January 2nd with our three kids (age 11,9 and 6). It is 1.75 miles each way (not a loop) with a lot of elevation changes and switchbacks. We thoroughly enjoyed this hike as a family, it was challenging enough for mom and dad but not too hard for the kids. We did make the youngest hold a hand through parts that were steep or had loose rocks. It took us just under 2 hrs to complete. Highly recommend this for families!

One of the Best Hikes of our Trip!

By Kari B |

What a lovely way to close out our week of hikes. This is a beautiful park, well maintained, and lovely views from every angle of the path. HIghly, highly recommend.

Nice Views ... But Lots of Development

By CharlieinTexas |

I did this walk last week and two years ago. Too much development going on all around takes away from the incredible views. You need to look over and past the house’s below to ignore the development.

Will get your heart racing, but not overly strenuous.

Up and down and up and back

By ReefWatch |

Moderately rugged, exceptionally maintained up and back hike. About 4 miles and 2 hours. There is a good amount of elevation change and the peak is very early in the hike. Quite crowded but everyone was courteous and the views are great. The neighborhoods are surprisingly close to the park.

Breathtaking hike

By Karen K |

Wonderful chance to see the mountain and the beautiful cacti up close. Very friendly staff and not a hard hike.

Awesome AZ Hike!

By Debbie B |

This hike is so fun, make sure you have sunscreen and water. The views are excellent. It can get crowded, but I really like having lots of people around, so doesn't bother me. It is a lot easier than Camelback FYI. :-)

Great Fun for Everyone

By Courtney |

Great hike for the inexperienced and the experienced! Can hike halfway to the viewpoint for a few pictures and continue on or turn back around and finish your hike. Great fun and amazing views!

Challenging but worthwhile hike

By MattDamon94 |

This a fun trail to hike and worth the effort. It is moderately challenging the whole way through, it seemed like we were climbing or descending for most of the hike. That being said, the trail is well taken care of and enjoyable to hike on. The views along the whole hike are very good. You can see a combination of desert habitat and some very wealthy neighborhoods and lush golf courses in Scottsdale.

Great Fitness Hike

By RandyYZF |

a great fitness hike with some pretty nice views. Was hoping the trail would get to the peak but unfortunately it didnt. The turn around point is just a dead end, but worth it for the fitness aspect.

Moderate but not too tough, with great views

By CanadaTravelGuy_9 |

My wife loves to hike but me, well I admittedly have to work on my stamina! But this hike provided a good mix for both of us. It was up and down, but not too steep with lots of rest areas and stairs. She could run on ahead to the end and, because it is an in-and-out trail, had to come back to me eventually!!

Some tips for you - parking is free but the lot fills up fast; watch for runners but there is good room on the trail for everyone; bring water - you will need it; trail is easily marked for beginners; budget about 2 - 2.5 hours; don't feel bad if you don't make it to the end and back...the scenery is great along the whole hike. And...most importantly...remember to stop every now and then and take in the breathtaking scenery, especially the lush green golf courses below!! I would come back again with my wife as it was pleasurable.

Thanks for reading.........happy hiking!!

great hike

By Gregory M |

fun, doable, beautiful views . My wife and I hiked this trail 4 times over 4 days, clearly we enjoyed it.

The rattlesnakes didn’t stop us!

By travelwhere |

I was visiting my daughter in Scottsdale. They routinely hike this trail so I was excited to try it. We only went to the elevation sign but it was a great easy & fast hike. We relaxed & enjoyed the views. Took us about 45 minutes for round trip. We had a small rattle snake cross the trait. My grand daughter heard a rattlesnake rattle in the bush near her, too.

In all fairness, they are on this trail frequently & don’t see rattlers. Today was a surprise for them.

It was a great family memory.

amazing views

By tejasmarcos |

great views from this location. the trails in and out are well maintained. bring lots of water. rgrgsdgreg regw

Great hike- longer than you think

By Christirdh |

We wanted to get a nice hike in and this did not disappoint. It has a great combination of up and down, and you definitely feel like you get a good workout. It is not a loop, so you will go back the same way you came. Bring a lot of water- its necessary and there is little shade from the sun.
Make sure you have good shoes for this as well.

Good hike

By Chandra P |

Hiked the pinnacle peak trail one day while staying in Scottsdale. It is a moderate hike with sweeping views. You have to go up and down two different hills and then turn around and come back. It is a good hike with parking and restrooms. If you like hiking, it is worth doing. If you are fit, it is a good trail run also.

Easy, but beautiful hike!

By chelsprawdz |

This was a beautiful park and a nice, easy hike. As travelers from Wisconsin, we were a bit concerned about hiking in Arizona's heat, but this hike was easy to manage and the views were stunning. Throughout the park, there are informational signs teaching you about the wildlife and vegetation that you see throughout the hike. It was a beautiful experience!

Nice relatively easy hike

By VeganMadeEasy |

We went early October later in the afternoon. Most of the trail was already shaded which makes it a pretty easy hike. Make sure that you consider the closing time as they close the gate as well as have people coming from the end of the trail to ensure nobody stays past park closing. All in all a nice little hike.

Well-kept trails, great views!

By Kristina |

I hiked this trail with a group of coworkers on a weekday afternoon in May around 5pm or so, which left us plenty of light to complete the trail (we did the one that's 1.75 miles one way), but with the sun down in the sky enough to really make the views and colors pop! Going at that time midweek also meant we were able to avoid any huge crowds.

Some tips:
- slather on the sunscreen— you're going to be under the hot Arizona sun!
- to avoid the hottest and arguably least comfortable times to hike, head there early morning (sunrise!) or about 2-3 hours before sunset
- bring a small backpack to carry your water, and bring a bit more than you *think* you need (it's HOT here)

While it's a relatively short trail with few (if any) really challenging bits, there are some steeps spots, so be very careful if you're doing this hike with small children or if you're not used to this type of activity.

Most of the views are simply wonderful, and the interactive placards along the way are awesome — super interesting to learn about the biology of the area and just how old those ginormous saguaro cacti are!. Some of the views, while nice, are a bit more mundane— you get treated to views overlooking the ironic lushness of emerald green golf courses in the middle of the desert.

That said, if you're in the Scottsdale area, needing that nature fix, this park and trail is a pretty close drive and really budget friendly (aka free).

Must Do Hiking Trail

By dennisjunesr |

A fairly easy trail that winds around the iconic Pinnacle Peak, you will find the views breathtaking. Located in a scenic part of Scottsdale, upscale and beautiful. You should do this!

Great Place to enjoy God's creation

By Bibi W |

I absolutely loved this trail. I was a solo novice hiker and it was just busy enough for me to feel safe but not enough to feel crowded. I went on a Wednesday around noon. It is a great area of Scottsdale. Great views. A great place to journal and bask in the presence of God! Great places to rest with awesome views. I will visit again on my next trip to AZ.

A Desert Park

By Thomas V |

It's a desert park in the middle of the urban area and thus much loved as it provides some undeveloped space that is easy to get to. It's a place to explore on foot, but choose a day when the temperature is mild, or go early in the morning.

Great Views!!!

By Mike Zschunke, Scottsdale Realtor |

Great Views! Easy enough for the whole family but challenging enough for a good workout. Can be crowded on the weekends.

Great Views

By Brad H |

We took a short but steep hike up to the "Grand View" point, which took about 45 minutes. The view was well worth the hike.

Geat hike with beautiful views

By Ann F |

This is a centrally located easy to get to hike: Lots of people were enjoying this trail at the same time but we were still able to stop and take pictures and enjoy the scenery.

A Sonoran Desert beauty

By CaliforniaExplored |

Majestic and panoramic valley desert views, wildlife and easy hiking draw visitors and locals to popular Pinnacle Peak Park. One of the most beautiful desert parks we’ve had the pleasure to experience. Saguaro cacti dot the landscape to amazing effect. Sunsets are not to miss. Bring water, good hiking shoes and enjoy.

TIP: This spectacular park is popular and trails can get very crowded. Still worth a visit.

Wonderful hike.. great vistas

By justmeinaz2015 |

Love this hike for a workout.. as do many..offers beautiful views(daybreak is incredible).. you'll cross paths with many so for some this may be a little too well travelled ..

Early morning hike

By Kate Illinois1 |

Moderate hike. Ample parking. Bring water. Suggest arriving early morning....cooler. Trail well maintained by volunteers. Walk at your own pace. Beware of joggers around corners; I was knocked down. Great views along the entire trail. Learn as you hike with all the informational plaques. No bikes. No dogs.

Great hike

By mattyrozee |

Full path across the mountain was about 4 miles. In spring, it wasn't too hot and it was gorgeous. Super interesting flora and fauna. Lots of other hikers - you aren't going it alone - but it was still a great hike. Lots of up and downs, but not too strenuous. I imagine between May and October you will want to hike early morning or late late afternoon. Otherwise it will be too hot since there's very little tree cover.

Great Hike

By DCinWhistlerBC |

A wonderful hike, but very busy the day we went (day before thanksgiving) which took away from some of the draw to the parl...bu the trails are in great shape, not a greatly challenging hike but good for families and has nice views of the area.

Outstanding hike

By Frank Geisler 🇨🇭 |

We came for hiking this wonderful trail which is two miles in each direction.

An impressive walk around the mountains with many outstanding views (please see pictures).

Safety is top priority and during our 1-1/2 hour walk we felt very safe.

Please wear stable shoes because there are plenty of steps up and down and also gravel.

Don’t forget to bring plenty of water!

Is this a helpful review? Then please give me a "Thumbs up Thank FrankGeisler" by clicking the button below.

This was a hike. Best trail to test your abilities! If you have sore knees, beware! I couldn't finish, but it's a goal for next visit!

Great hike!

By heather a |

Great hike! Fun and challenging for me! But lots of regulars. Beautiful views and varied trail. Not a loop trail, there and back.

We climbed to the top with a 6 year old! Nice trail with beautiful views!

By travelmetwo |

We climbed to the top and little beyond. We went 3/4 mile along the trail before heading back. There plenty of places to stop and take in the view. The staff is super friendly and offer stickers and post cards to the little ones that hike the trail.

Beautiful Views & Lovely Cactus On The Trails

By WorldSprinter18 |

This is a very busy place. There are Scottsdale regulars power walking the trails in their $400 outfits which I find amusing. Just don't dare get in their way. Probably not the best place in the world for little children ~ they may end up in someones dust. The views and mature cactus are worth the risk...

Great hike adjacent to Four Seasons

By LHudson16 |

We were staying at the Four Seasons for a work meeting. I walked from the resort to the park every morning to get some exercise. Two days I went only to high point, at about marker 34. On the third day I did the whole hike, out and back. It was wonderful but strenuous, mainly due to heat. Otherwise it would have been a fairly easy up and down trail, well marked and good footing. I had one yeti water bottle that I drank the whole thing on the way out and wished I’d brought more. It was hot even at 8:30 am. Whole thing took about 2 hours including breaks. Do not under estimate the heat and wear plenty of sunscreen!

Good Hike

By Scott B |

Over cast day in the valley of the sun. So we discovered Pinnacle Peak Park. Nice hike up and around the mountain. Good work out going up and coming down. Very clean and educational with what you can find in the desert.

Photographers, BEWARE

By Sue P |

I have loved this trail for years, have taken friends from out of the state and friends from out of the country. The views are beautiful and the hike is wonderful.

But just like anything, how you feel and the experience you get is what will either bring you back or not. What happened this past month is so far from acceptable that I will, unfortunately, never go back.

I don’t have a photography business (yet), but I do enjoy taking photos of nature, family, friends, fun things and places I visit. I carry my camera with me everywhere I go, my way of bringing back memories to be relieved any time I want!

This time around I had friends with me who just recently got engaged. I brought small props with me so we can have some fun and take pics, chat, catch up, while staying out of everyone’s way, being respectful, hiking and taking some photos.

Right at the start a woman who I failed in take her name came up and questioned if this was a professional or a personal photoshoot. I explained it was personal but I do have a professional camera. She asked several questions, AFTER I had already explained what the plans were. She was questioning my intentions and my character, my word, and being plain rude.

I do understand the need for the license and being approved, but I was not there to do business. I was there with friends to hike and take pics in the meantime. Nothing else. We were just like everyone else there, but because of my camera, we were treated horribly.

She even asked where we were going to go! This is a hike. We are hikers...but instead of a phone, I carried my camera. If that wasn’t enough...at the end, she questioned why it took us so long to come back down!

It has taken me a few days to write this review because I dislike writing negative things about people or experiences, as everyone should try it for themselves and not be discouraged based on someone else’s experience. But I just could not let the time pass and not share it, as it can ruin a special moment for someone else out there...

So, if you have a professional camera, just beware. The other park members were so sweet and amazing! We hiked down with them and they were so fun. This person up front ruined something for me...and it’s very unfortunate :(

Beautiful experience

By dgmmlevans09 |

A great view of the landscape. Peaceful and a grand way to spend some hours. Be certain to wear comfortable clothing, and bring water!

Great morning hike

By 1RJL1 |

About 15 minute drive from Desert Ridge. Arrive by 9am. Parking lot was full... also look for street parking. Up and down hike across two mountains. Groomed path. Lots of stairs. Nothing difficult. Not very high. About 2.5 hours round trip at leisurely pace. Lots of cactus. Tons of wildflowers now. Nice views of valley, homes, mountains and golf course. Bring enough water! Enjoyable. CAMELBACK IS MUCH MORE CHALLENGING

Great Hike

Great place to go to get some exercise while taking in the beauty of AZ. If you go in the summer, take water and hike early.

Wanted to see the scenery, but not interested in hiking (or vehicle). Very nice trail with distances marked well. "hiked" in sandals and did fine. Great views for 360 degrees with minimal hiking distance.

Sunrise Hike

By lauraalonsobi |

We arrived just before the park opened and we're able to make it to the look out for the sunrise easily. The trail was very busy but everyone was friendly and those wishing to run politely stepped around those of us walking more slowly. The view and sunrise was grand.

This place is absolutely incredible. It’s beautiful, in love ❤️🌵🏜. There is plenty of parking and restrooms available, highly recommend.

Excellent hiking trail! Easy and grooved.

By FitlifeandTravel.com |

This amazing desert landscape scene can be found at Pinnacle Peak, one of the more popular places to hike in and around Scottsdale, Arizona. With its elevation ranges of approximately 2,889 feet, and 3.5-mile roundtrip hike on a clean and groomed trail; this place had me yearning even for more outdoor adventure. Arizona is a beautiful place to do all kinds of outdoor exploration and today was no different as my family and I planned to go out on a morning hike on Pinnacle Peak Mountain. We had our parents with us and they hiked the trail as well, and they are both 80 years old!

Amazing place with spectacular views!

By Erica S |

I hiked by myself while my husband was here on business. I was a little apprehensive at first to go alone, but am so glad I went! It’s an open place with lots of other people so you feel safe. I would say this hike is for people who are used to exercise as it’s a lot of up hill and can be very hot. You can go as far as you want, you just have to turn around and go back as it doesn’t make a complete circle. I had so much fun, I went back again the next day! It’s an amazing place to get in a sweaty workout! Just wear old shoes as they will get very dusty!

Attempted family hike

By Brian R |

Went here with my sisters and their kids for a walk, unfortunately it’s the only trail in Scottsdale that doesn’t allow dogs. This wasn’t a problem as the guides could not have been more helpful and polite and very graciously directed us to another trail which was very close by.

Hike around the Pinnacle

By tagnrocky |

This trail is literally in suburbia, surrounded by homes, and is quite a busy trail. It is nice fairly easy hike. You do not hike to the pinnacle, but skirt past the base of it, then continue on down a neighboring rocky hill overlooking Scottsdale. It is an out and back hike , 1.5 mile, one way, and you can always turn around at the posted high point if you’re not interested in the walking down and then back up the last hill. Note: no dogs allowed.

Wonderful hiking trail with great views and beautiful desert terrain!

By Sharon R |

We arrived in the morning with water bottles, hiking shoes, hats, and sunscreen. Parking and restrooms are available at the base of the trail. This hike is 1.75 miles one way. It is a smooth crushed gravel pathway with a lot of steps, and a strenuous steep area the last 1/4 mile. It is 2,889 ft at the highest point. The views of the city from the trail are beautiful. There was a nice breeze and hikers were considerate. The cacti and desert terrain are lovely! One of our favorite hikes!

One of the parks in Scottsdale suitable for hiking. I visited once in August but it was too hot. My feet would burn while walking on the road.
The weather becomes cool in November, which is perfect for walking here. You need to wear sports shoes and prepare plenty of water.
The park has free parking and a simple visitor center with water dispensers!! Be sure to bring enough water before setting off.
A great place for hiking novices and families

Pinnacle Peak is a granite summit that rises to an elevation of 3,169 feet and is located within the 150-acre Pinnacle Peak Park in Scottsdale, Arizona. Located at 26802 North 102nd Street, it is home to a variety of native desert flora and fauna and a diverse variety of wildlife, it also features a 1.75-mile hiking trail that leads visitors around the peak and allows them to explore the area. Because it isn't a loop trail, the round trip covers 3.5 miles. An interesting feature half a mile from the trailhead is a scenic lookout called Grandview, which is an appropriate description. But rock climbing skills are needed to reach the summit. Historically, the area around Pinnacle Peak was used by the ancient Hohokam people for hunting and food gathering. Later, settlers began to use the area for ranching and mining. Today, hikers can observe what is described as an ideal habitat for native plants such as saguaros, cholla cactus and creosote plants and such creatures as bobcats, gila monsters and Western diamondback rattlesnakes. Rattlesnakes? Gila Monsters? If that isn't enough, mammals spotted on Pinnacle Peak include mountain lions, coyotes, grey foxes and mule deer. Just stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. It makes for an exhilarating walk through nature.

Perfect family hike

By J.P.A.S. |

We hiked about 3 miles of this with a 6 yr old and he was able to do it (with a little prodding towards the end). The trail is well marked and has information about the plants and rocks you see. The views are very pretty. You could make it more strenuous by running or taking the uphillls fast. There is a visitors center with maps and a nice clean restroom. There are rest points at the top. Bring water (and snacks if you are like us).

Breathtaking Views Around Every Corner

By Frank_Fazz |

Breathtaking views around every corner, this is easily my favorite hiking and I use that term loosely (very moderate) trail. I love how over the years my kids have evolved from loving the trail for it's spectacular views to running it for exercise. Bring your camera and take a lot of photos along the way. It takes us 25 minutes to get to the highest point on the trail 2889 FT., there is a small orange sign posted which is a great spot for a photo. From here we usually turn back, but many continue on. As always when hiking be sure to bring water and stay on the trail.

There are washrooms at the entrance along with an information centre. This facility has plenty of parking. I also recommend going early in the morning and catching the sunrise from up above!

Peace!

Great hike, but lot of people

By OCDane |

The hike is nice, very “man made”. Lot of people on the weekend. Great view and nice people at the general store.

Beautiful views. Very quiet and peaceful. I would definitely go back for another hike! I loved it!!!

Beautiful desert views

Hiking to the top of Pinnacle Peak is a family tradition. The kids have gone with their grandparents since they could walk. My aunt is painter in Cave Creek, "Red Rope Studios" and she has created wonderful images of this special place

The perfect after-work hike

By babyfishmouth77 |

Want to take a nice ~2 hr hike after work? This is your place. The traffic is a little sticky on 101 heading up there, but the moderately strenuous hike up and down (and back up and down) is worth it. We ran into the 'closer' Dennis at the end and he told us it was time to head back and he spent some time pointing out some subtle details in the park. The posted signs describing the local flora and fauna were another bonus.

Great hike, especially at sunrise

By Karin S |

For moderate hikers, Pinnacle Peak is a refreshing, 3.5 mile trek. Up, down, up, down, through fields of rock and blooming cactus, the views are great. Toward the end of the hike, there's a sign warning of a strenuous path ahead. Heed this! Turn around when the sign says trail ends, even when the trail continues. Likely head on to private property if continuing. Plenty of areas to rest and some steps along the trail. I suggest a walking stick and hiking boots, as terrain is a bit slippery, due to sandy gravel in some places.

Great little hike!

By shawndavies |

This was a very pretty hike....easier than Camelback, but just as enjoyable with a different perspective. Recommend for all ability levels.

Pick your view and pick your hike

By bolla1 |

As with most of the desert parks in the Scottsdale/Phoenix area this park provides many views, much to see and an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and nature. Take your camera and lots of room on your digital memory as there are lots of memories to capture.

A great first hike in the desert

By KidKansas |

Pinnacle Peak was our first hike in the desert. Never having been to the desert before, we were somewhat unaware of the natural beauty the desert holds. Our first hike was the Pinnacle Peak route - and it was probably the best first hike you could imagine. Most of that could probably be attributed to the fact that the park entrance is so well taken care of, and the information that you can get from the "shack" before you head onto the trail is top-notch. Signs along the way help you know what you are looking at. There are a few places where your heart rate is going to elevate due to the incline of the trail, but all in all it is a very manageable hike for most people. We saw people in their 80's and people in their 8's, so all ages can do it. I loved the part you arrive at with other peaks in the distance, and you look down and it will show you what you are looking at -- kind of hard to explain but you will know it when you get there. Our next hikes would be Piestewa and Camelback... both of which were considerably more difficult and different, but I will always remember Pinnacle Peak and the introduction to desert hiking.

Great hike

By S W |

Beautiful hike. Bathrooms available at trail head! Take water. Good 2 hour challenge especially for East Coast visitors not used to terrain.

Great views, fun hike!

By melissarP9022KP |

Loved this hike- definitely challenging but trail is safer and wider than camelback. Bring water and a camera/phone for pictures. They have bathrooms at the base and great parking.

Nice and challenging hike but gets crowded early

By Alicia W |

My husband and I completed this hike on Wednesday 2/19/20. We arrived roughly around 10:30am and it was already starting to get busy (I suggest Uber only because the parking lot was full at 10:30). Weather was a little chilly at first but it got hotter as the hike progressed. Be prepared for lots of upward steps, especially if you go to the very end (1.75 miles one way) and then back. Btw at the end there is only a fence so you have no choice but to turnaround and go back. BRING WATER, trust me!
We flew in the day before from FL so the air here is thicker and elevation is higher. Once I got my breathing technique in sync it became easier to complete the hike. (Deep breaths in through the nose and out through mouths). Total hike (to the end and back) is right under 4 miles and it took hubby and me about an hour and a half. Remember there are lots of stepping up hill climbing but overall a great hike and cardio workout!

A good climb

By diychas |

Being used to climbing mountains (very high hills with snow on the top), I wondered why they called this a mountain.
But, at 73 years of age, it was a good climb in 2 hours...in sandals.
It it's quite popular but not bothersome, and has convenient parking.
Good climbers were numerous and friendly.
The elevation differences is advertised as 2900 ft.
Being quite gravelly at the top made it more eventful.
Is is very worthwhile, if you are in relatively good health and looking for a moderate workout.
Advisable to carry water in a backpack (keep hands free to manoeuvre) and use sunscreen (I didn't and didn't receive any redness but you might).
You should also wear a thin jacket that you can wear around your waist as you warm up or weather gets cooler.
It is within a half hour of central Phoenix/Scottsdale.
It is the kind of climb a good glass of wine tastes even better afterwards.

Great views!

By Grant411 |

You get a great view of the valley. They climb to the top is a bit strenuous, but well worth the effort.

Pinnacle Peak hiking trail

By R Wyton |

Fantastic views and not an overly long or difficult trail. Some more adventurous can arrange for a climb to the top and then repel down. Very close to Scottsdale .

Very worthwhile

By TheExplorerFamily |

This was a moderately steep hike with lots of steps, therefore it may prove challenging for those who are not used to doing it in the Arizona heat. Some areas are rocky, grainy and slippery. You hike up and come down the same path. The views get better the higher you climb. But also remember, that the higher you go, the longer it will take to return. Take it easy, carry a walking stick and a bottle of water and wear sunscreen. Come early before the sun is up and before the parking lot is full.

Having said that, we found the paths to be well-worn and nicely maintained. We did not want to tire ourselves out on the first day of our week-long vacation, so we climbed up to the sign that said “Strenuous beyond this point” and returned.

Worth checking out this place if you are out-of-town people like us.

Nice hike

By Gail Goldman |

We went there from the Four Seasons Hotel and there is a designated path, Unfortunately it had rained and we had to detour on to the main road. However the views were good and the cacti amazing.

a good hike for all ages

By Kathy W |

We were staying in Old Town and wanted to get out and get some exercise and found this on TA as a moderately challenging path. For 2 young 60 yr, old people we found it to be a great fit. There is much incline to this hike but it happens in stages. You climb and then go down and then climb and then go down It never is too taxing. But you need to be in some physical shape and not carrying too much extra weight to enjoy this hike. Also I would suggest wearing hiking shoes rather than running shoes to keep from slipping on the loose dirt/gravel.

This trail is beautifully located so that from the peaks you can see the city stretch far and wide. The homes surrounding the trail are also magnificent in themselves. Just a very pretty place to get some hiking in.

What a great hike

By Pathfinder603043 |

I love this trail. It is my favorite in the area. Very scenic with a lot of ups and downs. Take plenty of water and sunscreen. The staff keeps this trail in pristine shape.

Great Hike

Moderate hike. Decent trail to the top. Bring water! Go early in the morning before the heat of the day. Worth the hike. Amazing!

A Slice Of Earth As You’ve Never Seen It

By Jedi-Travler |

A gorgeous location. An easy hike.

A land so foreign to this Pennsylvanian transplant from New York that it left me quiet and pondering all things big and small.

Terrain dotted by rust colored soil and green tall cactuses.

If you’re nearby.... visit.
If you’re visiting from out of town plan to spend some time here.

Fun Hike, Great Views

By KrisC3333 |

Great easy-moderate hike. Very well marked trail. Great for families. It is not a loop, so whenever you feel tired you can turn around and head back. Restrooms at trailhead. Basic sneakers, water and sunscreen all you need.

Great hike with a great trail.

By James F |

This is a great trail and a nice hike with some climbing. The views of the surrounding desert are beautiful. It does get crowded though. There is only parking on the east side of Pinnacle Peak. The trail comes down to Jomax road on the west side but there is no parking on the west side. It's about 4 miles over and back. There is no water or bathrooms except at the east trail head so bring a water bottle.

Great hiking trail

By James L |

This is a good, well kept trail that is easy to moderate to hike. Wide paths, inclines are nicely graded trails or steps. Not a loop trail though, so after the 1.75 mile hike you turn around and go back on the same trail. The hike itself is great, but at the 1.5 mile marker, there is a sign that states the last 1/4 mile is 'strenuous '. The hardest part is after you get to the end - the stairs back up happens to be where the harder climb back is. But still well worth the hike, and really not that hard. You can cut the hike off at different points if you like, including the last 1/4 mile, so it really suits all levels of hikers. We didn't rush the hike and took around 2 hours to enjoy. Others were there for a more challenging work out, including jogging the trail. Wasn't busy in Dec. but from other reviews I could see this as a real busy trail. We enjoy dogs, but it's nice to have no dogs allowed on this trail. Good bathrooms at the trail beginning only, and make sure you take water.

Beautiful morning hike that totally kicked our butts!

By Odyssey829085 |

Perfect challenge, especially if you like interval-type training. This is not just a hike up and a hike back down. There are multiple ups and downs throughout. Very well maintained (5 friendly volunteers working the morning we visited). Be prepared for loads of steps and definitely start early before it gets hot! Beautiful views throughout. When you get to the highest point, realize you are NOT even half way with a great deal more to come on the other side.

Chuckwallas

By sb c |

The park has parking, restrooms, and water. The hike is out & back. Take water and enjoy the wildlife. We saw several chuckwallas sunning themselves on rocks. They camouflage themselves, look hard. Signs describe the wildlife that can be seen on trail. The hike can be strenuous in places. Sun and shade as you hike along the trail. Go early in the day.

A must climb in the valley

By jnjdougan |

Pinnacle Peak is famous and can be seen from every part of the valley. The climb is not difficult as it is a steep pathway where you can stop and rest. Once you reach the top, you will be so proud of yourself ! ...and the views are spectacular!

Desert boulders and fancy houses

By 138jeremyj |

This is a fairly easy trail and is unique because you have a choice of watching the hawks and lizards scramble over large boulders near the peak or of looking down into the yards of multi-million dollar homes. There are also trail guides on hand to answer questions and to enforce staying on the trail. Later there are restaurant choices nearby also.
The trail winds around the peak, so there are different exposures and variations in the plant life. Its an easy, almost urban, way to see the desert up close. Watch for the chuckwallas.

Great Park & Hiking

Don’t miss this hiking experience. Very good hiking trails. Well marked and easy to follow. Recommend going in the cool of the morning and watch the sunrise.

Nice and Easy Hike

By JAF414 |

My husband and I very much enjoyed our hike at Pinnacle Peak. It was about 1.75 miles in each direction and you hit the highest elevation at about a 1/3 of the way in from the start. We noticed that most of the other hikers were locals and everybody was very friendly. The trail itself was very clean, we saw volunteers 'cleaning' while we were hiking and we really appreciated their hard work and effort. Pinnacle Peak is a perfect hike for most ages, families, couples, and individuals. I also loved the vegetation signs next to the trail. Additionally, there is space available for rock climbers and horseback riders. If we lived locally, we would probably do Pinnacle Peak weekly and we are looking forward to returning to Scottsdale and hiking it again.

Area Favorite

Excellent option for a quick hike to see all that the valley offers. great views. Get there early though, this is a very popular place.

Nice Hike with great views

By rspg1 |

We hiked about 4 miles here the other day. The weather was perfect, not too hot or cold. The location was about 25 minutes from where we stayed.

Easy hike with amazing views!

This is an amazing trail good for everyone! Well maintained trails and gorgeous scenery! I would highly recommend! No charge to get into the park!

Great Hike and Great Views

By Erik J |

This hike is about 4 miles to the end and back. The views are absolutely stellar and it's going to be a lot more relaxing and much less rigorous than Camelback and Squaw Peak. It's a graded granite path that allows you to walk or jog or run depending on how you're feeling.

Popular hiking spot

By Jeannie V |

This is a popular hiking trail for both locals and tourists. Not difficult. Definitely start early in the morning to avoid the heat. Lovely views of the desert terrain. Very easy to get to and there was lots of parking.

Great for Everyone!

By kenkochiss052 |

This is my goto park and trail whether I'm looking for exercise or taking visitors. ITs well kept and tons if signage if you're interested. Its well marked so you can hike 1 mile or if youre in decent shape, finish the entire trail (approx. 4 miles. Its not a loop trail so 2miles each way). The back half is harder than the front. You go up, down and then up and down again and that's just one way. Don't forget you have to go back. It takes about 30 minutes to the highest point and about 1.5 hrs to the end and back if you only stop a couple of times for water.

Fun hike, gets the heart going...

By cneste |

I would not consider this an easy hike, you definitely will go up in elevation in a hurry. We made it to the highest point, which is not the top of the peak, and decided to turn around. The rest was downhill to a dead end. I was a little crowded but not bad on a Sunday at 72F and sunny. Not long, less than 3 miles.

A Pleasant Arizona Hike

By SnowbirdOntario |

Pinnacle Peak is a very pleasant hiking park in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. It is very popular, but we found that the hikers were quite friendly, with the faster hikers passing the more relaxed folks following safe trail practices. The trail is 1.75 miles out and 1.75 miles back. Though it may not be physically possible, it seemed to DH a bit like it was for the most part up hill in both directions! The trails are very well maintained and very well looked after. There are trail markings along the way, so if a hiker requires help, they can identify the nearest marker for rescuers. The trail is designated as “moderate” level. There are some markers along the trail to identify some of the desert plants which we found to be a helpful reminder. The trails were very clean. A testament to the hikers and the volunteers who work to keep the trail in good shape for all of us. Access and parking is free, so be sure to leave a donation at the trail head so this jewel of Arizona can be maintained for years to come.

Bob's review

Pinnacle Peak is a hiking trail. You need to be somewhat fit to climb and see some scenic views. It's a fun climb on the trail and great exercise.

bring plenty of water.... Not for a beginner

By Michael S |

There are two peaks for this hike and it is not a circle. It's one way and back. Just when you think you are done, you have to go up another mountain then turn around and do it all over again. Great fitness if your up for it

Fantastic hike!

By John S |

Be there by dawn and have the peak to yourself. Dress warmly this time of the year, but your descent should be in the sun. Medium difficulty, but a very well maintained trail and park service reps all over to assist.

Great Hike!

By GoTFangirl |

Did this early morning hike while staying at the Four Seasons. It was a really good time and the hike is not very strenuous at all. You can turn around at any point and easily make your way back to. We were on the hill before 7am and the parking lot looked full and there were a good number of hikers already on their way up. Great Views and picture points!

Great hike

By mom22k |

Good views and great path. It will get your heart rate up in some areas but overall very doable. If you want more of a workout, you can run/jog it like some others were doing.

Nice, easy bike

By Tommy77 |

This is a very easy trail and can be accessed by hikers of any age. It is very well marked and pretty wide. I had read a description saying it was moderate difficulty but I didn’t find that to be the case. Great views!

Great Morning Hike

By FiveStarWhite |

This is a quick and relatively easy hike. We completed this with our children (ages 8-13) in 1:45, making the 1.75 mile (one-way) hike out and back.

Don't miss this beautiful place

By Getawaytdy |

Talk about scenery! Wow, one of the top places where I have gone hiking. The trails are well marked, the views are fantastic.

Great Views

By Hazelnutty2009 |

Easy walk from Four Seasons hotel. Hike climbs quickly away from houses, with great views to both sides of the Peak. Note that the trail does not go all the way to the top, and is a 1-way (out-and-back) trail with close to 1,000 feet of total vertical elevation. The lowest point is at the far end of the trail. Everything is well-marked
