Such A View

By PensandSteelersFan |

The mansion was closed, but the grounds were opened to the public until 9:00. Some people were having picnics while others enjoyed the beautiful view of the city and the mountains. I would definitely add this to my list while in Portland.

Don't miss it

By Bonni O |

We went Labor Day weekend. It was busy, but not crowded. We took the bus from the Pearl District, then walked up the hill to it - about a 15 minute walk. Great views from there, and a lovely mansion.

Beautiful home, lovely grounds overlooking the city

By Momma L |

We were so glad we took the docent led tour. Edy was very knowledgeable and gave a wonderful tour through the mansion.

The views!

By PlainCool |

If you're visiting on a clear day the views are incredible! Legend has it that you can see Mt Rainier when the sky is super clear... or so they say at least?

Nice view

By Ash |

Great view of the city don't not that I would pay $12 to get in and sold an old bed. There's a few cool photo ops and of course a photo opp in front of the mansion

How the other half lives

By Mario N |

I love old mansions, and this one is special. The family that built this spared no expense, and it shows. Everything was first class. The organization that is maintaining the house has done an excellent job of preserving and showcasing this house with period-appropriate furnishings. The house is well worth a visit, and the view over downtown Portland is spectacular on a clear day.

On a Clear Day

By AMarie314 |

We didn’t go in the mansion but I met my cousin there, who lived in Portland for several years. The grounds were beautiful but it was the view of Portland with Mt. Hood off in the distance that we were there to see. It didn’t disappoint! We were so happy the day was clear & the sun was out. Next time I visit Portland I will check out the mansion.

Cool

By Kimberly M |

This was a cool spot to check out in Portland. Gives you a look into the past and how Portland started out and the way of life and at the end you can walk out to the look up area and see all that Portland has become.

Must see while in Portland

By Virginia581 |

Even on a rainy day, this mansion was spectacular! The grounds were well groomed and in bloom. The guides inside the house were very helpful with information. Very interesting house, must see!

Beautiful and Interesting Mansion With Nice Views and Hiking

By Edward |

We visited the Pittock Mansion for the first time in July 2023. It is one of the most important historic sites to visit in Portland, an interesting mansion with an interesting history and great views from the southern end of the large Forest Park system.

The Pittock family were early Portland settlers and eventually owners of The Oregonian newspaper, along with many other business interests that made them among the leading business owners of the region. They also lead interesting lives, active in many events and organizations in the area. One can read all about them at the mansion.

They built the mansion in the early 20th century, late in their lives, and moved into it in 1914. In addition to being simply a grand and opulent place, it has interesting elements such as the unusual layout, plus details in the bathrooms, kitchen, etc. The mansion commands nice views over Portland and there is a scenic viewing area outside. The grounds also include a building called the Gate Lodge which was a servants' house, and for most of its history was the home of the estate steward and his family. It includes a number of original items from that family.

There is a shop and there are restrooms. Parking is right at the grounds.

In addition, there is nice hiking at the location. This is in the southern part of Forest Park and surrounded by various parks which all join together, in the wooded hills with many trails. There is a trailhead for the Wildwood Trail right at the parking lot.

Visitors just tour the mansion and grounds on their own - although as of the time of our visit, the website still included Covid-related rules about when to book entry, etc., which are no longer actually in force (an issue we have have many places in travelling since Covid-19).

Historic home

By ChrisGrayFaust |

An interesting historic home, built by the former owner of the Oregonian. Interesting but not necessarily the best historic home out there. Best for those interested in learning more about how Portland developed as a city.

Mansion with some history

By Astrobeemer |

We had a great time exploring this Mansion. Lots of things to see and learn. The bathrooms with the crazy showers were definitely the highlight of the mansion. Taking the insider tour would have really great , but we didn’t have too much time. The Pittock Mansion Is definitely worth visiting.

Interesting local history

By Brandon |

Pittock Mansion is an interesting piece of local history. We arrived early in the morning and spent about 2 hours wandering the grounds and the interior of the mansion. The mansion has been beautifully restored and offers a glimpse of life during the early 1900’s in Portland. There is a fantastic look out point that offers a beautiful view of downtown.

Good View!!

By Happy Pines |

The mansion is positioned on top of the hill with an excellent view of Portland and Columbia River. Recommend the tour inside the mansion, has lots of history and information. There are 2 part to the visit. One, inside & two, outside. Walking outside by the garden and the view does not require to buy admission; however, the tour of inside the mansion requires admission tickets. Highly recommended.

Great place for urban hiking and city views

By Doug D |

This makes for a very enjoyable day trip when in the Portland area. The house itself is interesting but don’t expect a Biltmore House type experience. We really enjoyed parking away from the house and hiking up to it. There are fantastic trails leading to it that make you forget you are in an urban area. The viewing point provides a great overlook of Portland with Mount Hood in the background.

Interesting tours and decorations in every room during the Christmas season are just two reasons to visit

By Kent O |

Interesting tours and decorations in every room during the Christmas season are just two reasons to visit. Guided or self-guided tours are informative.

Spectacular Home and Landscaped Grounds That The Nickel Newspaper Built

By Alan Z |

Being from Connecticut, I have never heard of the Pittock mansion or Henry Pittock who built this in 1914. Well, he and the designers built a spectacular mansion...All it takes is money. His money came from owning the largest newspaper in Oregon. Only 46 rooms on a 46 acre estate on the highest hill overlooking the downtown area of Portland. Not too shabby back then or now. Apparently he had a Pierce Arrow Auto that drove him or his wife to the downtown area everyday. Very unique mansion with a central vacuum system, walk in refrigerator, Otis elevator, intercom system and a shower system that boggles the mind. How did it work? The interior is beautifully decorated with period furniture. The landscaping and views from the mansion are spectacular. Go back in time with a visit. Only about 5 minutes from downtown Portland.

Pittock Mansion Beautiful Place

By C E |

I would suggest doing a tour here, If You come during Christmas Time the Mansion is all decorated. The grounds are nice to walk around as well

Fantastic views over Portland

By whiskers51 |

We visited the gardens simply to take in the view over the city and only realised when looking through photos of a previous visit it PNW that we had done the same thing some 15 years ago. That is not to say that the views are not memorable but more to do with absent mindedness! I can say however that the view is wonderful.

Beautiful turn of century mansion

By tim b |

A beautiful turn of the century mansion on hill overlooking downtown Portland. Worth the hour long self guided tour that is well land out. Some stairs and limited pay to park spots. Furnished very well with display notes for each room.

great building and hike

By PDXmilespoints |

wonderful hikes and views around the mansion. council crest is another wonderful venue close by. great maintained home.

Blast from Oregon’s past

By Kieran G |

The curators of Pittock Mansion have recreated a very believable retro-look of life in the early days of Portland. The kitchen, laundry and bathroom items for example all harken back to a 100 years or so. We had a field trip of elementary students who kept the place buzzing. Great experience!!

Fabulous Mansion, Property and Views

By Jeannie D |

This is a great activity for about 1-2 hours. The mansion is self guided and is absolutely beautiful and with amazing history. The grounds are gorgeous and the view is amazing. This is definitely worth a visit to learn about Portland's wealthy families and their influence on the area.

Worth a visit.

By Mitzi5point |

We were looking for something to do while in Portland for a couple of days and decided to check out this mansion. We were glad we did. The inside is beautifully furnished and interesting, and the grounds and views from the lawn are absolutely stunning. It’s a great place to take in a view of the city and the autumn leaves.

Beautiful views

By CohenD1234 |

This place is on hilltop overlooking Portland. There are beautiful views down to the city. Given that it was a fall day, the tree colors were amazing. We got there too late to go inside and see the mansion. So, next time I’m in Portland, I’ll return to try to do that.

Pittock Mansion

By Sonali K |

Went here part of the Portland city Tour.
Interesting show, amazing reconstruction of a bygone era, views of Portland city spectacular.

A Must See When Visiting Portland!

By Priscilla805 |

We are so happy we went to see the Pittock Mansion! It was beautiful! A wonderful view of the city too! There is a trail head you can catch right there too in Forest Park. It was an absolutely gorgeous hike! It was a fun afternoon! I highly recommend it!

Only Saw Outside - The Views Are Beautiful

By Niskymom3 |

We stopped here as part of a 1/2 day tour of Portland. The Museum itself was closed but the gardens and the beautiful views of Portland were accessible.

The view of Portland from the gardens is one of the best!

By KateBallew |

We've only lived in the Portland area (up in Washington state) for a couple years. When family came to visit last fall, we were looking for things to do in Portland and came across Pittock Mansion. It was a perfect outing and gave all of us a glimpse into the past of one of Portlands turn of the 20th century families. Best on a good weather day for the view.

Fine Christmas Start

By FellowTraveler279557 |

Easy to find this lovely mansion on the hills of Portland. Each room was themed for a book and it was perfect. The decorated trees and mantles really sets the tone for Christmas. Inspiring. The real theme of Christmas...birth of Christ not seen...only down side or maybe I missed it in thé terrific book themes.

Truly delightful, lovely home and excellent overlook view of Portland

By Gabe H |

The house has a number of interesting and beautiful architectural styles. The house is spacious enough to spread out visitors and keep socially distant. Most of the furnishings are donated period pieces (not the originals), but all are quite nicely done.

Best view of the town

By Yodatravel |

Any time of the year, it's a great place to visit. It's full of rich history, great architecture, and a great place to hike. Also the grounds are incredible. Don't miss this place.

Fascinating technology in a 1900 mansion

By Jerry W |

This mansion is about 120 years old, but had the latest technology-ahead of their time. Contains electric lights, rubber floor in cooking area, a refrigerated closet, a communication system and much more. It was an excellent place to spend a rainy afternoon.

I never went in!

By jautrey21 |

This is not to demean anything about the mansion but to praise it in an off-hand way. We took the time to ride up to the mansion fully prepared to pay to get in and take a tour. After luckily finding a spot in the overflowing parking lot we went up to the mansion but quickly realized what we wanted to see was the overview above Portland and Mount Hood in the distance. It is gorgeous! The praise I want to give is that the mansion doesn't charge for people to come up and share that view! They could have easily charged a fee and I would have gladly paid it (I made a donation on the way out). Thank you Pittock Mansion for being a breath of fresh air in an otherwise greedy world!

A MUST SEE!

By Joe |

Pittock Mansion is one of the two things I will remember about my recent trip to Portland. An amazing historical site with an equally amazing history. The views from the garden are spectacular and the forest trails are worth the effort to explore.

Best Ever!

By Judy C |

We had 1 day to spend in Portland, Oregon to do site seeing before we took off to drive the Columbia Gorge area. The question was ...’what do we see in this short time’? We decided to visit the Pittock Mansion first which proved to be a wonderful choice. The mansion was so special and we have seen many beautiful places. It was unique in every way. Not so huge that it was overwhelming and at the same time you hated to leave each room. Such details to see! You could envision your family living there and your children running up and down the beautiful marble staircase or sitting in the music room or library, The grounds were very beautiful, the views magnificent and the staff very knowledgeable. Perfect start to our day!

A 100 year old modern house

By FergusDad |

The Pittock Mansion is an example of the state of the art home of a century ago. We saw it in its Christmas finery. Be sure not to miss the shower in the master bathroom.

Historical home with great views

By WestCoastChick604 |

You will be transported back to 1914 when you enter the home. Artifacts, furniture, rooms, clothing are all fascinating. Great views of the city and of Mount Hood even on a cold November morning. A gem!

beautiful views!

By Suzanne L |

We were late getting there so we did not take the mansion tour but the view behind the mansion was spectacular!!!Beautiful pictures of Mt Hood

Historic Mansion with Incredible Views!

By lonil990 |

We drove up here on a beautiful spring day and the views of the city and mountains are gorgeous! It is very tastefully done as you meander through the rooms to see what life was like when the families lived there. If you like grand old homes, you'll want to check this one out!

Great View

By johnpr259 |

This was such a wonderful place to see. You can almost "place" yourself back in the early 20th century when you walk through a building like this one. It was built around the same time as the Glensheen Mansion in Duluth, MN. It is about half the size but has many of the same "extras" that are in the latter. I would advise anyone that enjoys history to visit this mansion. The view of Portland from the grounds is unbelievable on a clear day.

Beautiful home

By Toni |

COVID has made the world interesting so I’m sure it would have been a better experience- self guided- beautiful house and property- a bit boring

Worth the trip

By SCCAROL |

Beautiful grounds and interesting restored home. Amazing views of Portland. Helpful , knowledgeable staff.

Fantastic

By GrandTour276570 |

We visited The Pittock Mansion this week. What a wonderful experience.
I am a native Oregonian and had somehow missed this treasure throughout my years. I am so happy that I finally made time to go!
The view is breathtaking, the grounds - even at this time of year - were beautiful and the house is steeped in Oregon history.
So grateful that we were able to go.
Thank you Michael Mills and Amie Abbott!

Amazing property

By codyhansen360 |

Amazing property and much history to absorb. This mansion has amazing veiws of Portland and is very well priced to visit.

mansion

By Victoria W |

I visited the mansion and it is smaller than I expected but lovely. The view that overlooks the city is breath taking.

Nice view of the city

By Julie k |

Very pretty outside grounds and nice view of the city. I didn’t want to pay the money to tour the inside so can’t really say if it is worth it.

What a Great Mansion!

By KenPenn |

As a Portland visitor from the East Coast, we really enjoyed our visit and self-guided tour of the Pittock Mansion. High on the hill overlooking the city of Portland, it was a beautiful clear day. The Mansion had so many features similar to some of the old homes in the Hudson River Valley. I really liked the showers!

Must visit and see the history of Portland through these windows.

By Michael M |

The Vanport Mosaic Exhibit is wonderful and very timely as we examine our history in greater detail. It just opened as the museum reopened.

beautiful home and gardens

By Woltmannfamily |

we were in Portland for the day and needed something to fill our day, our daughter came across the Pittock Mansion, what a beautiful home and gardens. There is a fee to enter the home but we felt it was worth the entry fee, there is also a gardeners cottage included with the main house. Wonderful views of the city and Mt. Hood. If you don't want to pay the price to enter the home, walking through the gardens is at no cost and they were just gorgeous.

Amazing

By Annaconda007 |

I am totally in love with this place! I wish I could live here.
Fantastic time travel. Beautiful building with amazing interior. The view from the garden is stunning. Worth a visit!

Lovely connection to Portland history

By SeptemberSassy |

I learned a lot about the early days of Portland via this tour. The house is a great homage to a bygone era and is beautifully maintained. Nice way to explore a different piece of a city I thought I knew well.

Great views of Portland

By jakemore2018 |

Visited and obviously didn't pay attention to timing (closes earlier in December than during the summer). So we weren't able to go inside however, viewing the mansion from the outside and see the view of Portland and Mt. Hood was breathtaking. Love bits of history like this!

Beautiful Gardens and Pittock Mansion Tour

By Mary P |

We loved walking through the gardens and taking the Pittock Mansion Tour. It's a wonderful place to visit even with children. The dining table is set and all of the rooms are elaborate in painstaking detail back to when the Pittock's lived there.

I loved seeing the all of the rooms - dining, kitchen, behind the scenes, bedrooms, etc. and especially the staircase.

The view of the city of Portland is so lovely too.

Worthy of a look

By Mary Margaret |

Interesting place. Quite a walk uphill if you don't get a parking spot in the lot. Grounds are well maintained. People are friendly. The view is Fantastic! My husband took pictures and they turned out great. Once is enough but definitely good stuff.

Wonderful place, bring a picnic

By Tourist551097 |

The mansion is beautiful and well worth a visit. The views are great and lovely to enjoy a picnic on the grounds. Glad we took the time to visit.

Beautiful house

By Lynn M |

Spend a rainy afternoon walking through the Pittock Mansion. Everything was restored and cared for very well. Unfortunately, it was raining, so we didn't explore the grounds very much, but we could still see that the mansion is in a great setting.

Worth a visit

By R W |

I enjoyed learning the history of the mansion, the Pittock's and more about Portland.
If you enjoy history, architecture and gardens, you will enjoy your visit. This is not the scale of a Biltmore House & Estates.
It is well worth the admission for the house. The tour is self-guided with information in each room. The view from the garden overlooking Portland is wonderful.
We spent 1 -2 hours here. We did linger a while in the gardens and enjoyed the views and wonderful weather.
You do pay to park. $2/hr.

Lovely day 100 years in the past.

By FLstamper |

The grounds are lovely with a great view of the city. There are trails to hike, too. Realize it is up a hill. If you want to view the inside there is an entry fee. It showed how those with money lived in early 20th century. Although the family did not entertain, but used all the rooms for multi- family members. It is handicap accessible too.

Beautiful

By Lousie G |

It was very interesting to see this mansion and the antiques. The gardens were also so surreal. The view of Portland and the mountains were also amazing from the mansion! This was also a reasonable fee!

Charming Mansion with Stunning View and Shaded Hike

By Twee Wong |

This hike was recommended by a local. The view of Portland is stunning and the mansion is beautiful. Right next to the mansion is the hiking trail. We were fortunate to have great weather and make the hike a lot more enjoyable. It is great for family and young kids. I highly recommend this on your next visit to Portland.

Lovely vistas, interesting mansion

By LoveToTravelSamson |

a little pricey! Took 10 min to tour mansion. The gardens were beautiful. Lovely drive TO the place, near other attractions. The entrance fee was too high though.

History with a killer view

By debybarnhart |

To just walk the beautifully landscaped grounds around the mansion out to the amazing east views of our Cascade mountain peaks and the carpet of Portland and the Willamette River is a trip worth making in itself. If you want to connect with Forest Park trails, just go to the edge of the parking lot to signs. The interior of the mansion is beautifully preserved and quite a step back in time with old time plumbing. Highly recommend!1

Amazing mansion high in the hills of Portland

By PVtraveler |

Visit the mansion! It is a glimpse Back in time of the portico family and the luxurious lifestyle they lived. Four stories high with original furniture and bathroom kitchen fixtures. He outside areas give a sweeping view of mount hood in a clear day. It is a beautiful short drive from pearl district.

Very well maintained and staffed. The volunteers are fantastic, really knowledgeable and friendly.the history is well preserved.

Worth the Visit!

By Terri M |

Spent several hours touring the grounds, gatekeepers home and the Pittock Mansion itself. Absolutely a beautiful historical home, one that should not be missed if you are a lover of American history!

enjoyed a hike and the fabulous Pittock Mansion

By RSNN |

I have a membership so I can get in free to see this fabulous Mansion. It is history and it is wonderful place to visit. Lots of great things to see, like the grand marble staircase. And the music room with the harp.

I hiked up to The Mansion from lower Macleary trail up past the Stone House ruins. crossed the road to the Wildwood Trail and then all the way up to The Pittock Mansion. pretty much all up hill. I think it was about a 2.5 mile hike using these trails.

I heard that the Wildwood Trail is closed between the Pittock Mansion and Washington Park. they are building a pedestrian bridge at Burnside right now. I think that might be completed this Fall sometime. I will have to trial that trail after they finish the work on the pedestrian Bridge. Never hiked that way before. would be nice to see and do sometime. When it isn't raining

Historically beautiful and the views are awesome

By ML Stewart |

This is a must if you're coming in from out of town and want to see something from Portland's past. Also, when family visits for the first time - take them here.
The building is beautifully restored and kept up as are the gounds. But the best part isn't even during the day...
Come catch pre-dawn from this location and see one of Portlands best views. Bring your camera - it might take a couple visits but you can take some beautiful photos as the sun begins to peek over the horizon.

What a view!

By janniebabe1 |

Our tour of Portland did not include a tour of the house/museum but the outdoor views of the city were spectacular! Be sure to visit with a tour guide so you know what exactly you are seeing as you overlook the city.

Amazing piece of American History

By 01Silver1986 |

If you’re going to Washington Park, be sure and take an hour or so of your time to see this house. The Docent, Tom, was especially knowledgeable & friendly. And the view from there is another plus.

The view is worth it!

By KStaterWillTravel |

Must see view of the city. We went on a day the museum was closed so can’t tell you about the house, but it looks amazing.

Best view of Portland and Mt Hood

By Aubrey M |

This is a great place to have a picnic or go on a date. You can see the whole city and there is some historical information at the viewpoint about the city and it also points out various landmark buildings. It’s a cool place to check out if you are out visiting the area.

Beautiful views and grounds

By Sightsee730901 |

The view of Mt Hood the day we visited was amazing! Would suggest going later in the spring when more of their gardens are in bloom.

Intentional Historical Display

By Amayah |

Wonderful experience to tour a historical site that saw Portland towards the beginning of its industry. The mansion is impeccably kept and you can almost feel the souls that lived here. Powerful. It’s like the perfect picture and experience of how it felt to live in a mansion during this time. It’s absolutely gorgeous during the holiday season with all of the decorations.

Beautiful sighta

By Aimee A |

This is 1000 feet above Portland so from here we could see all of Portland. It was beautiful. Highly recommend

Lovely grounds and mansion

By stanandamy |

Great view of Portland from the property, which is well landscaped too. Mansion tour is worthwhile - many innovative features. Self-guided tour is adequate for most.

a look at the past

By ecgrieb |

decorated beautifully especially at christmas. christmas trees in every room. its much like it was when originally built.inside and out ,flowers and landscaping and a view of portland. its worth visiting

What better way to celebrate my birthday...

By TLDawson |

I decided to spend my birthday visiting Pittock Mansion to learn about a little bit of Oregon's history. It was an amazing experience seeing the coolest things from way back when.

So glad that it was sunny after the tour, I was able to take a clearer version of Portland from Pittock's Viewpoint.

Beautiful home and interesting history

By stasee000 |

This is a beautiful house is a phenomenal setting! The mansion tour was an interesting insight into the history of Portland. The house has amazing views of Portland. There are hiking trails around as well.

Worth The Views

By @atracks |

You can park for about two dollars. That’s how long it takes to complete the tour. It’s really cool home and was well built for the time. No access to the third-floor unfortunately since it’s a safety hazard. But the highlight is to go out onto the ground which is actually free and view Portland downtown and some of the mountains. Overall rating 7.2

Dissatisfied.

By George P |

Skip it. You must pre-purchase your ticket on line. We did and then when we went on 1/4/2025 the doors were locked and people walking back from the mansion to the parking lot just said that they were closed. No member of the staff was present to apologize or tell us what was going on. There were people walking around inside. And now as we try to get our money returned, no reply to emails and no one will answer the phone. I'm waiting until monday the 13th and then will make a demand upon the registered agent, but her address is at the mansion!! Go figure. Probably will have to sue in small claims for the return of the admission price, only $30.

Beautifully preserved/restored grand mansion

By Yoram_and_Laurie |

Very beautiful and interesting mansion made even more so thanks to a well marked self-guided tour. Beautiful grounds with great views of the city from above.

Simply amazing

By Gregory S |

What can you say about this beautiful mansion and the family that owned it. Such a beautiful lot of land right above Portland. Everything in the mansion is period correct and beautiful.

Outstanding experience

By Gregory S |

Amazing experience into the past. The mansion inside was majestic. The exterior was the show stopper. The views were amazing. The landscape has great photography opportunities.

An opulent and carefully restored mansion with great views of Portland

By Nostalgiyeah |

This is a regal mansion, a short drive from the Washington Park. Unfortunately when we visited, it was foggy and the view of the city from the mansion was not the best, but on a clear day, I'm certain that the view would be excellent. The mansion is quite plush and grand, and reflects the days and lifestyle of the "elite" in the early twentieth century. I believe it was owned by the owner of "The Oregonian" newspaper. We took the self-guided tour, which cost $12 per person. The rooms are well arranged and some (not all) artefacts actually belonged to the original Pittock Mansion. It was quite interesting to walk around and get a sense of life a hundred years ago. There were volunteers stationed at different parts of the house and they were more than willing to answer questions. The mansion features some interesting "modern" amenities like an electric "dumbwaiter", intercom system, multiple showerheads separately for hot and cold water and a refrigerator to name a few - it helped shed light into housing in those days. The tour leads you through multiple rooms, many of which have displays elaborating details about the room and how it featured into the personal and/or professional life of the Pittocks. Although a lot of furnishings are not original to the Pittocks, it was fascinating to learn how they collected those from other wealthy families from the area carefully used those in the restoration of the Pittock Mansion. I would definitely rate this place a must-visit for architecture and history buffs!

A good view of Downtown Portland can be seen from here

By Siti Hajar Madina |

The mansion itself was already closed for visit when we arrived there around 6:00 pm but the garden was still open for visitors until 9:00pm if I’m not mistaken. And the view of Downtown Portland is superb from the garden. Better to go when there’s daylight as the drive to mansion is quite steep and narrow.

Beautiful history

By Lynn |

I took my Mom here as she's a history buff and we enjoyed it a great deal. They were very accommodating as my Mom uses a walker.

Well worth a short visit

By adventuregirl14 |

The view from the mansion alone makes it worth visiting, but it's also incredibly interesting to explore the different rooms inside. Engaging for kids and adults - would recommend for sure!

Glorious mix of history and beauty

By Arden W |

This was our first visit to Pittock Mansion. The mansion sits within a public park, with beautiful gardens and views of the city and mountains. There is a charge to visit the mansion (adults $12, military discount saves you $1), but no charge for the park. The mansion tour is self directed by there are lots of posted descriptions as volunteers to answer questions. Several interesting design features. Your admission includes touring the caretakers house, which makes an interesting comparison. Well worth the trip.

The View is the Highlight

By Lance H |

The view from Pittock Mansion is truly amazing. However, as great mansions go, this is OK. Having just visited Vizcaya in Miami and having seen many of the Great mansions at Newport, Rhode Island as well as the Biltmore and Sam Simeon, this is not in that league. Though, it is worth a visit for the view alone and the mansion itself is worth visiting. Just keep your expectations down a bit.

Excellent

By Sean M |

Very interesting step back into time. I highly enjoyed our time at the Pittock Mansion. I can only imagine what it would have been like to live there. Our walk through the mansion and around the grounds took a couple hours.

Take a walk back in time in Portland's history.

By NW Woman |

Beautiful views outside and in. This mansion is young by New England standards, but the best beauty in the area, The rooms are well appointed and preserved, so you can get a glimpse into how life was in 1914. Enjoy a walk around the outside and take in the views of Portland.

So unique

By JEFFERY Q |

Interesting place to visit, beautiful mansion that is very well preserved. Sad the original owners only enjoyed 4 years. Gardens are pretty and the view of mount hood is stunning. They charge 12 dls to get inside the mansion. We decided to enjoy outside instead.

Christmas

By sandy g |

Lovely Christmas decorations and music. It's fairly limited in the number of rooms you can go in but a nice visit in December.

Imposing house, beautiful gardens, and a spectacular view of Portland

By Jim W. |

We had planned to stop here during our trip, but had stayed flexible on where to work it into our itinerary. We were on our final day in Portland where it made sense to try to visit this place (en route back from our day trip to Mount St. Helens) so we didn't have as much time or energy at that point. Had we visited earlier in the day, we might have toured the mansion also. As it was, we just toured the grounds, which is free.

To get to the mansion, you climb several hilly roads, eventually making a very sharp turn onto the final street. That leads to a narrow driveway (I wondered aloud if it was 1-way until we saw as 'share the road' sign...). This widens a bit an leads to...another sharp turn into the parking lot. All of this is more challenging as you meet an oncoming (thankfully slow) vehicle, but is still navigable.

The parking lot is fairly large. You have to pay to park here, which was the only expense we incurred. Also, I think there was a trail at the far end of the lot connecting to Washington Park, so you may be able to hike here from the park (you should research this if you want to pursue it).

We checked out the gift shop briefly before advancing to the mansion. If you are jus touring the grounds / gardens, you can circle around either side of the house. There are various flowers, shrubs, and trees all around. Most of the flowers seemed to be on the far side of the house. This was also where the lawn was located, which sloped down to a bluff overlooking the city. You could also see Mt. Hood clearly from there. It seemed to be a popular place for picnics.

The lot has a pronounced slope, so be prepared to climb stairs or a sloping asphalt path as you circle the house.

Depending on your schedule and your level of interest in old mansions, a tour of the house might be worthwhile (I think it cost on the order of $10 per person, but check their website). This was a nice stop with beautiful scenery. We probably toured all of the grounds in 45 minutes. It is worth checking out.

Mansion and Grounds

By backpacker31 |

This is a must-see when in Portland. It’s location close to downtown Portland (but feels a world away) makes it a perfect excursion. I took the self-guided tour of the mansion’s interior which was well worth the $12 cost of admission. The (at that time) state-of-the-art household features such as recessed lighting, massaging/spa shower, individually controlled lighting, thermostat, refrigeration room and local/long distance telephone system are incredible. Although most of the household furnishings are not original to the house (or the Pittock family), I found it quite fascinating to learn how they acquired these from other local families in similar sociology-economic circles who lived at the time as the Pittocks. The history of the home’s construction, it’s decline and subsequent abandonment and its massive restoration is amazing. The grounds are lovely and the front lawn has some of the best views overlooking Portland and beyond (on a clear day you can see Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens and more).

Beautiful views

By Philly413 |

The views from the lawn are amazing on a clear day. We saw Mt. Hood. Mt Rainier and Mt St. Helens from the lawn. You have to pay if you want to go into the Mansion otherwise it’s free. You can pick up the Wildwood trail from the parking lot, which is beautiful.

Festive at Christmas!

By lilac1 |

My visit to the Pittock Mansion was especially magical during the holidays. The home was built in 1914 by the future publisher of the Oregonian Newspaper. He built a beautiful home with a stunning setting. I arrived on Monday, November 19 after the volunteers had spent the previous 3 days decorating the entire mansion for Christmas. Every room was done up in a theme that demonstrated life during the past. It's like a small Hearst Castle or Biltmore but more intimate and unique to Portland. Even if you don't care about Christmas go for the views from the back of the property over Portland which are absolutely stunning during a clear day. Mount Hood looms over the city like Mount Fuji.
The ticket was around $7 and that gives you entry to the mansion and the nearby gatehouse and the grounds. You can walk from the mansion along the Wildwood trail to the Japanese Garden which is spectacular on a nice day. The hike takes about 45 minutes. I would highly recommend this for any families with children young and old and lovers of old architecture or character homes. Magical at Christmas!

Great view spot!

By Liz C |

Pittock is a great place to take family and friends who visit Portland. It has a spectacular view of the city, and Mt Hood when it is "out," so come on a clear day for the best views. The mansion is beautiful and interesting to visit to see a beautiful old home on the inside.

By Joseph S |

A very nicely restored home built by an early businessman/publisher who owned the newspaper. If you ever get a chance to do the behind the scenes tour offered at times I would highly recommend it.

Bit of a hike

By Neil C |

We walked which showed 2.5 miles, it is not an easy walk in the heat. The views are worth the effort, the view of Mount Hood is amazing, we had a sunny clear day and the view over Portland was spectacular.

The mansion was amazing, the facilities were good, if you do take a car there is plenty of parking.

Well worth a visit just for the views.

Beautiful mansion and grounds

By Mylizzibug5 |

Beautifully restored mansion with equally as beautiful grounds. Amazing views of the city too! Would definitely recommend if you have an extra hour or two.

Beautiful mansion

By Azizah A |

Beautiful view, I’m expected it has more room and more original furnitures in it but, it’s only have few that original.
For winter travelers need caution because, it has really high hills

A must see in Portland

By Lauri R |

Our family loved this experience, the mansion is beautifully appointed and well maintained, as well as the grounds. I would like to go back and do a behind the scenes tour, if possible.

Beautiful Small Mansion

By munchkin19 |

This mansion is on the small side but beautiful none the less. The $10 entrance fee was well worth. The real star of the property is the location, way up from the city on a hilltop. The views are spectacular, and on a clear day you can see Mt. Rainer. The roses on the estate are lovely, and there are trails to hike on. This can be a full day excursion, the Test Rose Garden and Japanese Gardens are really close by. We took an Uber, no bus goes this far.

Beautiful appreciation of history!

By AKTraveler78 |

Beautiful restoration and storyboards! Make sure to head to the 'backyard' and see Portland from a birds eye view!

Downton Abbey meets the Oregonian

By EricNY152 |

The grounds were well kept. Beautiful flowers adjacent to manicured lawns.

The tour docent was very knowledgeable and pleasant, and kept the tour moving- yet added enough local color and background so we knew that we were getting more info than was printed in a brochure. The history of the family and the property was interesting.

On the day of our visit, there was an antique car show. Very beautiful, and fitting to see old roadsters parked out front. It added to our visit.

Expensive, but we did not feel cheated. Take time for the guided tour, walk the grounds on your own, and relax.

Beautiful Home

By dloupe |

We loved touring the home and grounds. The home overlooks Portland. Really nice. The guest house is quite something to see too.

Beautiful House

By cshella |

Beautiful Place! We went there an hour prior closing, and the place is still packed! The interior is elegant. I can only imagine how lavish the lifestyle of the people who used to live there

High up view

By ACald147 |

There were some amazing views of the entire city of portland. It is a car ride up there and there is an entry fee.

Worth a visit for the view of the city

By JLC_57 |

Beautiful mansion! Loved the gardens with the gorgeous roses and hydrangeas. The original furnishings of the house were not available so it is decorated with the style of the period that the house was built. The view of Portland from the gardens is amazing and worth a trip here just to see that.

Mansion on a Hill

It was frustrating unable to book reservation to see the inside of this place. But told my husband let’s try. Went there and fully booked until next day. But we walked and the yard and architectural built were beautiful. Make sure get a reservation 2 nights before .

Virtual reality: Walk/Imagine through Pittock Mansion

By Minnie M |

A history buff, I was in heaven. My interactive experience led me through rooms arranged with colorful period furniture--bedsteads, wood & marble cabinets, sofas--and a sewing machine and sitting room overlooking both the garden and a vista of Portland. As visitors are guided (self tour) throughout the house, history boards and period photos incrementally tell the ongoing story of the mansion, late nineteenth/early 20 century Portland, and its citizens. Through the Pittock family’s personal story, my physical walk through the house sparked my thoughts to imagine what it might have actually been like to live during that time.

A small but pertinent point introduced the Pittocks as people I could relate to: much of the furniture currently arranged is not what the Pittocks brought to the mansion. They brought plain, simple, unadorned beds, tables, chairs from the small house they moved from. The furniture was not ornate. Just plain folks, but growing with the community.

(Other furniture there does represent the times and the history of other early families that also reflect Portland establishing itself in our state, nation, and globally. These contribute to a wider view on Portland, which I did enjoy.)

Spend time walking, observing, reading, imagining in this place.

Memorable destination, hike, and park!

By John Allan N |

Words of praise describing Pittock Mansion are as common as trees in Oregon. Thousands of those trees are located in Portland's 5,000 acre Forest Park, the largest completely natural area within any US city. At the high point, 1,000-feet above downtown rests the mansion. Most people arrive by car, but if you are able hike from any number of trails heads below. You will enjoy steep canyons, huge Douglas Fir, Western Hemlock, and Western Red Cedar trees, a fish bearing stream, and occasional peek-a-boo views toward the city and Cascade Mountains in the distance. The hike is somewhat strenuous - up 900-feet from the bottom of Balch Creek in 2.5-miles (trail head at NW Upshur Street near 30th), but the experience is worth the effort. At the top enjoy the panoramic view, then visit the mansion. My parents settled here from Iowa and remarked that "if Forest Park was back home it would be a National Park!"

Beautiful mansion with an amazing view

By tinaNtravel |

The mansion is large and beautiful with each room decorated as it was during the time it was a home. You purchase tickets in the small building before the mansion and then you are free to roam through the mansion at your own pace. There are several plaques that describe what you are seeing. Be sure to look on all levels. Once finished, go out back and look at the view. The view of downtown Portland with the snow covered Mt. Hood in the background is amazing!

Great place to spend an afternoon

By yakermary |

The views from the overlook are amazing. The paths are well marked. Signs tell you type of trees and history of the house without even going in side.

Beautiful historic home, even if it doesn't include origional furnishings

By Jasmine38Chichester UK |

Beautiful mansion of the period. Self guided tour with information panels throughout.

Although we enjoyed our 1 hour visit and the rooms are well furnished, very little is origional. The curators have, therefore, made the decision to fit out each room from different periods. Personally I would have preferred for it to be completely furnished in its own time period.

Pretty gardens with fantastic view over Portland and Mr Hood, can be visited without entry ticket.

Amazing home

By Stephen |

Amazing home with some of the luxuries we still see today. The home has an elevator and a central vac system. It was beautiful.

Feel what it was like to live in luxury in times past.

By RLD808 |

This was an amazing place to visit for a felling of what it was like to live in the past in a luxurious mansion of it's time. I was so happy we went here to check it out. We were totally blown away by this attraction and amazing piece of history.

The property along was incredible with all the amazing grounds keeping. The foliage of trees, bushes, and flower plantings were mind blowing. It would have been so grand to live here back in the day and just walk around the property enjoying all the beauty of the garden and looking out at the views of the surrounding city at the distance.

Inside were wonderful furniture and house furnishings of the time period. Unfortunately, they were not originals that existed in the mansion at the time, but were antiques from the time period that matched the lifestyle of the occupants that originally lived there. You really got a feeling of what it might have been like to live there and was so interesting to investigate each room.

We didn't rent a car, but this attraction is very accessible via Uber and wasn't expensive to get there and back from the downtown area. If you did drive, there is adequate parking connected to the driveway of this attraction.

Don't forget to ask for discounts. They honored my AAA membership.

Defiantly a must do experience if visiting Portland, so I highly recommend it to all.

Nice Historical Site to take Family

By SC Wolfe |

Beautiful tour of the property and grounds. You can walk through it yourself to take in all the historical aspects of each room (not a guided tour that often rushes you along). Very well maintained / restored rooms/building.

Interesting place

By Fox M |

It was an interesting little look into the past. With the covid precautions, you're sort of herded into a line while you meander your way through the mansion on the predesignated path. Its worth the price of admission, but it won't blow your mind. Its a nice activity to do if you're up in the Washington Park area. The views from outside the mansion are absolutely spectacular though.

Nice View of City

By Kelly |

The mansion is at the top of a mountain/large hill near Washington Park. You get a great view of the city! The view is free but it costs to tour the mansion. Unfortunately when we visited, the mansion was closed, but we were able to park below the mansion and walk up.

Great pkace

By RRed42 |

Wonderful place to visit. Gives you a wonderful history of Portland and many of the people. The mansion is beautifully restored and the views are breathtaking. Don’t forget to visit the gate house because it is so cool to see. I would highly recommend visiting the site. It is a little expensive but I thought worth the money!

Highlight of my day

By Teammilitello |

I loved being able to explore the mansion on my own. Stopped & read stories about the family. Lots of grandkids grew up in the house. It’s nice to see so many family pictures. (Most mansions I tour are from childless couples.). The landscaping around the home is incredible. You can get a good view of Portland from there.

This museum was better than expected

By sarank |

We visited the Pittock mansion just before Thanksgiving. It was all decorated for Christmas with each area having a theme. The staff there were knowledgeable about the fascinating history of the mansion. It was quite a surprise to see how the mansion was built with technology way ahead of their time like the intercom system for example. I recommend this beautiful mansion

A spectacular view

By Rita L |

Beautiful Mansion, the view at night is absolutly beautiful. We visited the day the workers and volunteers were decorating and it was done nicely.

Step back in time

By Renee D |

Gorgeous mansion with great history. I recommend of walk through, especially in the summer when you can enjoy the views of downtown Portland.

Hike up!

By brmusicman |

This beautiful mansion from the early 1900s offers sweeping views of the city and beautiful grounds. You can drive there, but we hiked; it’s part of the trail system within Washington Park. Our hike was definitely uphill! The forest was beautiful and it was cool to emerge at this mansion and be rewarded with the panoramic view of the city below. Note that the mansion is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during COVID-19; however, even on those days, the grounds are pretty and views fantastic. A nice addition to our Portland visit.

Great history and architecture

By 710adriennea |

A must see for those interested in architecture and antique artifacts. It has a very “Hearst” meets “Winchester” house feel to it.

Timeless 100yrs old mansion, gardens & views

By AndreaUbok |

We purchased advanced tickets on line & followed signs to the mansion. We paid for parking, many came with dogs, to walk the grounds. The home opens at 10AM & we got here early to view the grounds. The meticulous gardens & views of Portland & Mt Hood were awesome. We cued up to go inside the mansion. Masks, social distancing & Covid protocols were followed.

We walked through the entry, music room, dining room, butlers pantry with a dishwasher, Can pantry, enormous hundred year old professional refrigeratorand into a timeless 1914 kitchen.

Upstairs we saw the sleeping portion the porch providing circulation 100 years ago during the tuberculosis epidemic. Upstairs were the family bedrooms, closets and bathroom. The master bathroom had a freestanding shower, tub, and soaker tub for a quick cleanup, everything was white & hygienic.

In the basement reviewed the laundry room and staff staircase. We were able to get water and use the restroom.

A very knowledgeable docent told us that the house cost 150 to $300,000 a 100 years ago , about $4,000,000 today. Not only is there an elevator in this home but there’s an intercom system that connects the property,

Closed in January

By JamieHtravels |

We went to see it and there were tons of people walking around but it's closed in January! It's beautiful on the outside and I would have loved to see it inside. Worth a visit if it's open, it's in a great location.

Beautiful Pittock Mansion

By mgkamish |

My aunt and I love old homes and gardens. This one was beautiful and it wasn't even fully spring yet. It's as beautiful as the pictures show and the ride up to the mansion is also gorgeous.

Great view!

By Sumer88 |

We stopped for the view on a guided tour and it did not disappoint. I wish we had the time to see the inside, but it was early and not open yet. The views were gorgeous though.

Well worth a visit... and those views!

By Mara M |

I loved the mansion itself - really interesting layout, different from many other historic homes I've visited. Our tour guide was excellent and incredibly knowledgeable - we liked it, but it was a full hour of talking, skip the tour if you don't want a lot of time listening to small details. The grounds are gorgeous, and the views of Mt. Hood and surrounding area are the best we experienced in all of Portland.

Beautiful restoration with a perfect view of Portland

By Mark P |

Visited this wonderful place several weeks ago. It has been magnificently restored to its original glory and the care definitely shows. I highly recommend this attraction to visitors to Portland. The view outside the mansion is incomparable!

Interesting

By Patricia M |

Unfortunately in January the Mansion can't be toured as it is being cleaned. But even though it was thickly "socked in" with fog and we couldn't enjoy the views, I could tell it would be an amazing place to visit and admire the vegetation and views in the Spring and fall. Or on a clear day.

Architectural gem with a view

By Jane F |

A tour of Pittock Mansion provides a look back in time and the history of Portland. Our visit and Architectural Tour were exceptional. Mike, our volunteer leader and current board member of the foundation enthusiastically shared all the fine details of design, and there and many - inside and out. Well worth the additional price to get the extra details. We flooded Mike with questions which he fielded showing his extensive knowledge and appreciation for our level of engagement and interest.
The added bonus is the hilltop location overlooking the city of Portland. The Masion is surrounded by beautify gardens and wooded park trails.

Gorgeous home and stunning views

By Lani K |

This was my 1st visit to Pittock Mansion. It was a beautiful day. You can tour the home or just take a picnic lunch and enjoy the stunning views.

Hiked up the Trailhead to the Mansion

By Michie1291 |

You can take the road, but we got our exercise early in the morning hiking up the trailhead. It was a decent hike and well worth it for the a walk away the grounds and a great view of the city and the mountains. If you are a mild to average hiker you should have no problem. We had tennis shoes on, so you don’t even need to bring your hiking boots. Sit and rest awhile after your hike. Snap some fantastic photos of the house, flora, and the outstanding view.

Nice Views Tight Parking

By kerstin1c |

We stopped by here on a whim during a day trip. The grounds are beautiful though we opted out of paying the price of admission to go inside. Parking was extremely difficult to find. I'm not sure I'd go back unless I had a specific reason.

A big house

By D C R |

We just happen to visit this because we were looking to hike a trail nearby and figured since it we were there we might as well tour the mansion. Though the house was big and the staff is wonderful, the mansion is just not something I would do again. In every room the sign says that it didnt look like this when they lived here. So it was like throwing random furniture in the rooms. It was all very nice just not something I would do again and if given the chance I would do something else.

Historical landmark

By twinmom8 |

This historical landmark is also a city park. You can walk the grounds but have pay to enter the mansion. Very impressive views of Portland.

Love the history

By Sheila |

We enjoyed strolling the gardens and the home. The history of the family and World’s Fair was worth the time. A bit expensive, but shouldn’t deter your visit.

Beautiful view

By SZivaKea |

Note: I did not do the tour inside the mansion because we had dogs with us.
We did walk around the outside to view the gardens and look over the city. It is a beautiful view, even in the rain.

Very cool museum!

By yoginiflygirl |

This is so much better than I had expected. The house tour has many very interesting and ahead of the times components. Very unique and so awesome to have it accessible. The view of downtown Portland and Mt. Hood are spectacular!

Breathtaking

By goldencalgirl |

We did a self-guided tour. The more active kids got bored easily, and it was difficult to keep them from running ahead. But for those who enjoy museums, architecture, and gardens, this was a wonderful experience. The house was set up as if the family were living there about 1914. My house was built about the same time, so it was interesting to see some of the similarities. We had some nice photo ops outside, and you could see the city and river below and the mountains in the distance.

The Pittock Mansion has been a "go back" place for me over the years. I have attended functions there as well as just tours. I like to bring "out of town family" for the experience and past history.

Pittock Mansion

We were glad to visit this Mansion, you get nice view outside and inside. It has elevator for people who has chalenge climbing the stairs.

Beautiful view!

By Kesslane |

Nice when you get there to see the "old" way of life and walk around the grounds...the view is amazing.

A wonderful glimpse into the past

By 123Cindy2014 |

Beautiful mansion and wonderful history. I enjoyed seeing the craftsmanship of the building and the forward thinking that was used at the time of building. There are many signs describing the use of items and the history.

Free Parking Advice

By tumbleweedchris |

For folks that like gawking at old mansions, this is a good attraction. The mansion has minimal historical significance and was more or less owned by a newspaper family that went belly up a long time ago. I would say the family information has almost no interest to me as a result. They also indicate that most of the furnishings are not how the house would've looked. The mansion features, views, and construction are quite interesting, however. There are three floors of self-guided viewing, although the bottom floor is a rotating art exhibit. There is a vista point and a small guest house that are also included in the ticket. It's a gorgeous home with lots of neat features for the era the house was built in. The attraction charges for parking just like most everywhere else in Portland, which is irritating. I advise you don't encourage this ridiculous upcharge and park for free at the trail parking that is a very short walk from the entrance. You will pass it just as you make a sharp turn to the entrance. This is one of the better attractions I've seen in Portland if you like meandering through old mansions.

Beautiful and elegant

By Rose C |

This is a beautiful home ahead of it’s time. So many great views and elegant features that could only be dreamed of even today!
A must see!

A beautiful look at the early 1900's

By Kathy K |

The grounds are beautifully landscaped and you can enjoy that for free. However, the house is well worth a visit. There are great signs throughout telling you about what you are seeing, how the family lived, etc. There are stairs to climb. I saw an elevator, but I wasn't sure that it was working. Be sure to see the basement, as well as the two floors you can tour. Take in the views of Portland from the front yard. Take time to really look at all the wonderful flowers.

Great views

By Todd M |

There's a small parking lot at the mansion. We got a spot there. Didn't pay ($12?) to get inside the mansion, but we did take in the outside gardens and views, which were nice. There's also a trail that goes right by here (Wildwood trail?). It was closed in one direction, though.

A well curated journey back in time

By GrandTour595227 |

At the crest of a forested mountain, featuring killer views of Mount Hood and the City of Portland stands the Pittock Mansion. If you like house museums as much as I do, you’ll love this one. The period furnishings, vignettes and interpretive signs do an admirable job of immersing visitors in turn-of-20th-century Portland, as lived by the wealthy Pittock family. Modern-day residents are the ones to thank for the preservation of the grand home, which at one point was badly in need of repairs and set to be demolished in favor of a residential development. The success of the campaign to purchase and restore the property and grounds says a lot about the civic spirit of Portlandians.

Cool historic house with great view

By Nancy S |

If you are into historic architecture this old lumber barons mansion is a nice find. They have an informative tour of the house which will give you some history of the families life, and you see old furnishings and decor which I think might be original from the house. The Pittocks had quite a modern shower for back in the day, too. The mansion is at the top of a hill with quite a view of Portland. There is plenty of free parking. So it is an interesting way to spend an hour or so if you like that sort of thing.

A Must See!

By BlueBottleGirl |

I can’t believe Pittock Mansion is #17 on the Portland list. The house is in mint condition with the best view of the city. This is a must for anyone who loves regional history, architecture and enjoys learning about the private life of a wealthy family just after the Edwardian Era. Kids seem to love it too. Don’t miss the table services display in the basement or the Butler/Chauffeur’s House on the grounds.

great mansion

By ken m |

great place to go to and see how the rich and famous lived in earlier times. take your time lots to see and great view

By netdefender77 |

Learning is ok on vacation. Learned some of Portland’s history. Some but not to many original pieces are on exhibit. Loved the view from the picnic area (back yard)

Worth it!

By F. Weathers |

This home is amazing! It's so incredible to see what was cutting edge of the times versus today. I also was very gratified to learn of the denizens' view towards labor, people of color, and the working class. Such an unusual anachronism, but the luxury is on full display. Marble staircase, elevator, insanely gorgeous furniture, yet very obviously a home, and a workingone at that. Even the caretaker cottage is well appointed. The view is great, but the house and the people who lived there is so absorbing I couldn't turn my mind from the topic. It's a great place to spend a day, and you might. I returned to several spots more than once trying to imagine the past. I highly recommend this, it doesn't disappoint!!

A must see

By Dawn S |

This mansion is a real gem for the Portland area. It is beautiful in its appearance and history. Happen to get in on the start of a guided tour and was amazed that Andy (only second tour given) was so informative, funny and enjoyable to listen to. Beautiful views of Portland and of the grounds. Highly recommended.

A great contrast to downtown

By nijo00 |

After the disappointment of Portland city centre this place is a jewel. Perched above the city it is a look into the lives of a self made man and his family. Restored by the city it is well worth a visit.

A piece of Portland history

By Sungron |

We visited here a couple of years ago when it was decorated for Christmas. This time we concentrated on the historical nature of the place and its decor. Built by the founder of the Portland Oregonian newspaper in 1914, and occupied by his extended family and servants, it's elegant in the style of the time. This is a great example of the lifestyle of the early twentieth century wealthy. The view from upstirs is awesome. There is a small store downstairs. There are tours available, but we explored independently.

A visit on a perfect day

By kencoutts |

We enjoyed this visit to Pittock Mansion on a beautiful clear blue day.

Enjoyed the history, the beautiful preserved home, the views over the city.

We did a short tour and found it excellent.

We allowed 3 hours and this was comfortable timing.

Beautiful mansion with an amazing view of Portland. Take the time to stroll its garden - has a variety of flowering plants and trees. It was a pleasant visit!

Worth a visit!

By Rascleberry |

This was a great experience. The volunteer who gave our tour of the mansion was knowledgeable and had a really fun personality. VERY interesting hearing about the family, details of the home, etc. The mansion sits on the most beautiful location that gives you an amazing view of Portland. It was also interesting to see features of the home which were ahead of its time and the beautiful craftsmanship of the home.

Definitely worth visiting!

EXCELLENT IN ALL RESPECTS

Excellent garden and extraordinary well preserved mansion in a wonderful location. Full of furniture and decorations that gives the most impressive idea of the way in which lived this entrepreneur of the early years of Portland. Great for a morning or afternoon promenade in the suburbs of Portland, Or.

a must see for the mansion and the view

By glebo |

This is a beautiful place to walk through but the gardens outside and the view are a must see. Well worth the trip up the hill

Go for the view, mansion tour is optional.

By imrico |

The mansion is nice if you like history. I'm glad I toured it, but it is not exactly necessary. I think the view and the gardens were my favorite part, and that can be done for FREE! I can't imagine waking up and looking to see Mt. Hood like that every morning.

A place with view

By DGK65 |

This property is a short distance from downtown and has big opening view of the city. The mansion itself is OK, for a $13 ticket, it is not so extraordinary interesting. The nice part of this property is the view. Plus, if you like walk, you can walk the WIldwood trail to the Rose garden. It takes more than an hour's walking, most are downhill. So combine both the Mansion view and hike the trail, it makes a nice afternoon activities.

What a wonderful experience

By Chogs_Nitjo |

Sure, I've been to a number of historic homes during my travels but this one was different for a number of reasons. For one thing, the house had a very warm feel to it (it didn't feel like a museum and different have lots of gaudy decor although the upholstery and wallpaper was lively and colorful in places.

There was also a lot of technology in the home, surprising for hotel of its time.

The smoking room -- a tiny space -- had magnificent masonry (three dimensional and artistic plastering of the ceilings in particular) and a view of the city that will take your breath away.

Don't miss this!

Beautiful home and grounds!

By Laurat33 |

Made an impromptu stop here and we really enjoyed the history and seeing this beautiful home. The views of Portland are amazing too!

Great Place for History Buffs

By Brett P |

Pittock Mansion is really well preserved. It’s presented via easy y to follow self guided tour. But volunteers are also readily available to answer questions. This is worth visiting for its history and architecture.
The original building includes many luxury features such as heating and cooling which were very advanced for the day.
The care takers lodge is also included and it’s immediately adjacent to the mansion.
We also enjoyed the beautiful landscaping and views of Mt Hood and the City of Portland.

A fantastic view into the early 1900's. The craftsmanship is amazing and plumbing innovations in the bath were fun to see. Affords a great view of the city from above.

Amazing.

What a beautiful mansion. God bless the preservation society for bringing it back to life. It is a very unique property and the garden was blooming. So pretty.

Don't Miss This Historic Home

By Francesca W |

Even if you can't take the time to visit inside (which you shouldn't miss), the views from the grounds and the plantings surrounding the home are beautiful themselves.

Historic Portland

By Deborah M |

Great way to spend an hour or so, on a nice day. Beautiful house that was built with modern amenities of that era (1914), great views of Portland and some great history.

Great views

By ADolores |

We arrived at the Pittock Mansion only to be told we could not go in. Our City of Portland Tour did not include admission to the mansion and besides there was no time for a tour. Oh well, we had to content ourselves with peering in the doors and windows. We admired the landscaping and headed around the back to get some great views of Portland. Will return to tour the house someday.

Fun visit

By busymotheroffour |

You can take a pretty short simple hike to the mansion which is worth the climb. Very pretty to see. After hiking you can also take the lower trail to see the "witch's castle" or stone house

Interesting for all ages

By Momx10 |

Being a historical-living buff, this was one of the best “old house” tours I’ve taken. Although it was self-guided, there were many posted explanations of what we were viewing—very thorough. It was interesting to see the home of Portland’s most prominent family, from public spaces to servants’ work rooms. Don’t let a crowded parking lot dissuade you—there’s room for many.

Only ok but I appreciate the cause!

By Chelsey |

I can appreciate what the city is trying to do by encouraging tourism to the mansion. Maintaining history is so important but unfortunately a lot of what is in the mansion isn’t original history to the mansion itself. The grounds are beautiful and if you hike the trail leading to the mansion that is beautiful too. It isn’t terribly expensive to visit so if you happen to be nearby I’d say take the hour to visit and support efforts to keep history alive, just don’t expect to be blown away.

Delightgful look at the estate of the owner of Portlandia News

By Ruth B |

My husband and I enjoyed the amazing views of Portland and Mt,Hood from the outside gardens of the estate.Wonderful gardens at this auspicious month of July.We also enjoyed visiting the Chauffeurs cottage which was a three level home for their chauffeur and his family at the bottom of the hill.Last and not least, our visit through the mansion with wonderful views and plenty of luxurious living for the Pittocks.Kitchen and Baths are fascinating early 20th century original to the home.

Beautiful house and grounds

By Resort141041 |

$12 self-guided tour. The house is lovely. The furnishings are authentic to the era. Loved that many items were actually preserved originals. Ice boxes and stoves were must-sees!! Grounds offer beautiful views of Portland

Wandering the Grounds / Mansion Closed

By Nybe O |

The building is beautiful, and the grounds are well maintained. The view of the city and Mt. Hood is stunning, and can see that this view must be on a plethora of postcards! Peaceful day, will return when mansion is open.

Beautiful

Beautiful mansion, perfectly preserved, and lovely grounds with an amazing view of the city. Great place for a picnic in warmer dry weather.

Cool tour

By PAHWestfield |

Very cool to be able to tour this mansion. They have done a nice job to try to restore and preserve this amazing place. So nice it is available to the public.

Great place to visit

By Margaret11111 |

This home is beautiful...while the furnishings are not all original, they are representative of the styles in the time of the occupants who lived there...the owner of the Oregonian newspaper! Lovely gardens and view of the city... very worthwile of a visit!

Historic

By Daniel L |

Pretty much what one would expect. Private, rich old PDX. Worth the trip especially during Xmas season

Worth the climb

By SasH |

We stopped in for a quick visit. The mansion is nicely decorated for Christmas and the path through the rooms is well laid out so that you don’t feel crowded.

Make sure you check out the gatehouse also.

A must visit mansion!

By PepperNewJersey |

While the price of admission might be a turn-off for some people, it is well worth it visiting a home of a time gone by. The self-guided tour afforded you the opportunity to see how one lived in the early 1900's. Beautifully appointed rooms. Wonderful property.

Beautiful and interesting place

By Ro L |

Love Pittock mansion!! Have visited several times now and never enough. The History and the Tour are so interesting of a time long gone. Beautiful View of Portland from the viewpoint and lovely flowers/graound planted by the Mansions original owners. Reccommend. Easy to get to and enough parking for everyone.

Beautiful Mansion with guided tour

By James R |

Learn about Henry and Giorgana Pittock as well as some early history of Portland. The mansion is beautiful and the outdoor gardens are very nice with wonderful views of the city.

Great for fans of history and culture!

By Claire Shallee |

My husband and I stopped by the Pittock Mansion during our trip to Portland on a foggy morning. At around $12 per person, the admission fee is very reasonable. Every staff member we encountered was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the house and Pittock family. The mansion reminded me of a much smaller, Americanized-version of Versailles. It’s a great educational stop for those interested in history and culture. I wouldn’t recommend bringing young kids as they would quickly get bored. (Take them to the zoo instead).

Worth the the effort, once

By Old Pro |

This is a beautiful mansion owned by the former newspaper magnate. It's basically a museum of how the house was set up originally. It features a beautiful home with beautiful furnishings and beautiful grounds. If this is your thing, then this is the perfect place to go

like to look at the view from here

By love traveling |

we hiked here from a trail and it was not too difficult, mostly flat. but we loved the view from Pittock Mansion.

A step back in history with great views

By LaBordeBL |

The mansion was fun, but unless you enjoy looking at antique furniture and turn-of-the-century architecture (which I do), you can save the money and just tour the grounds, go to the gift shop, and take in the amazing views.

Best Views of Portland

By Karen P |

A trip to the Pittock Museum is a must for all visitors to Portland. Even if you don't tour the inside of the mansion, you can walk the grounds and take in the amazing views of Portland and the Willamette River. There is a nice gift shop here and the local Master Gardeners help to take care of the grounds. They are a friendly sort and you can ask them all kinds of questions about the area if you find one there. The inside of the mansion is worth a look for sure and the guides do a great job filling you in on the local history.

The hike to the house on the hill is fabulous

By Michael W |

Of course you could drive up to the mansion and park there. But Pittock Mansion backs up to Forest Park, one of the great urban parks, and it's a lovely and invigorating uphill hike from the Audubon Center lot to the mansion. Then you can feel you've really earned that view. The Mansion is amazing, (and so is the size of the home for the family handyman and his kids!!) The plantings are lovely, and the view on a clear day (we suffered some smoke/smog obscuring the views) is fabulous (yes, we visit every time i town). Well worth a visit for a hike, a look at the gardens and plantings, and a jovous restoration of a grand old home.

Rainy Day at Pittock Mansion

By Jamie S |

As one of the most historic sites to visit in Portland, the mansion and the grounds were breathtaking, especially on what turned out to be a rainy day. Within the mansion, there are many interesting historical facts along with furniture and antiques from different time periods. On the grounds, there are great views of the city and fall colors. There was also an exhibit for Eliza Barchus which contained her artwork and life details, which may have been the highlight of the mansion.

A Must for Visitors & Residents

By Carol V |

A must for any local residents to periodically visit or for a tourist. Large part of Portland's history. Especially delightful during the holiday season when it brings hints of an era long past.

Beautiful historic mansion

By David S |

Gorgeous views and interesting history offered. Easy location to visit driving from downtown portland

By Mary H |

We had visited the Mansion on a prior trip to Portland, and only saw the outside. We were happy to be returning and planned to definitely return to see the inside. What a treat! The layout of the house, rooms, modern features, historical commentary and exquisite furnishings were all enjoyed immensely. The elevator to take my octogenarian parents from the 2nd floor to the basement was definitely a big help!

The grounds were again impeccably maintained and added to the beauty of the Mansion. The views of the city and distant mountains was spectacular!

Beautifully Preserved Mansion

By SMF-Collegeville |

Impressive mansion and interesting caretaker's house to look at, with period furnishings and interesting informational signs throughout. The story of Pittock, coming in on the Oregon Trail and instrumental in the newspaper industry of the time, was quite interesting from a historical perspective. Also a garden and a nice viewpoint over the city of Portland. Well worth visiting.

Overview of City is Beautiful

By Nailah M |

I didn't actually visit the mansion as I didn't have time. I had heard about the wonderful view overlooking the city and I wanted to experience it. The day I was able to visit was crystal clear and beautiful.

The mansion looks impressive with beautifully curated gardens. On my list for the next time I am in Portland.

Beautiful Museum, Rude Staff

By Sam R |

I recently visited the beautiful and historic Pittock Mansion in Portland, Oregon. I loved learning about the history of the Pittock Family and gathering more information about the development of the city of Portland. The estate includes manicured ground that are wonderful to wander through on a sunny day. You can also enjoy the amazing views of the city's skyline from the mansion's grounds. I suggest you go to the museum in the morning because when I arrived at 10 a.m. the museum was very quiet, but by the time I left at noon the mansion was getting very crowded with visitors. The mansion is filled with beautiful antiques and several information plaques that give you the background/biographies of the family members who lived there.
The museum is relocated on a very isolated mountain top, so the best way to get there is either to drive or take an Uber. Although there is a city bus that leaves you near the museum, you then have to walk up a very steep, hilly road to the mansion. If you're feeling adventurous and want to take a hike on a beautiful day, there are nature trails that lead from the mansion Washington Park.
P.S. The only thing I didn't like was rudeness of the museum staff. The young lady at the ticket office was rude and abrupt. I also noticed that the lady at the entrance of the museum (where you start the tour) was very unfriendly. She seemed bothered when I asked her if there was a little map for the "self-guided" tour. I found this behavior very strange because almost everyone I encountered during my visit to Portland was very polite and friendly!

Beautiful afternoon

Gorgeous home with interesting facts all though the home. Grounds are very well maintained. Gorgeous views of the city!

Beautiful Property with a View

By Sara G. |

The Pittock Mansion, once home to publisher Henry Pittock, is a beautiful mansion and property in Portland. This historic estate has early 20th-century architecture and history on the Pittock family's legacy. The real highlight, though, is the panoramic view—it’s one of the best spots to take in the entire city of Portland. A perfect mix of history, beauty, and breathtaking scenery! So much history here.

Best tour in Portland

By RandyRoss |

We loved our tour of Pittock Mansion! In fact, it i the best thing that we did in Portland. Of course, we love touring old houses, so we are a bit biased. The house is spectacular and the decorating is beautiful. We also loved the gardens and the views of the city.

Hilltop Mansion with a View

By Bill C |

It’s a winding uphill drive up to the mansion. There is free parking in the 60-stall parking lot at the Mansion. There is no charge to walk around the grounds of the Mansion. Avoid going up if very cloudy since the view won’t be very good. There is a good view of Portland when the sky is clear. There is a sign at the viewing point to help identify Portland landmarks. There is also a museum store and washrooms.

Gorgeous piece of history!

By SweetSusy |

This is a great property to go see. Gorgeous old mansion! And the views of Portland are amazing! Highly recommend it!

Beautiful Spot

By AlexJ262 |

A lovely historic mansion just outside Portland and a welcome reprise from the city centre!
It's only a 10 minute drive or you can take the bus to the end of the road and walk for around 15 mins to the mansion.
The interior is beautifully preserved and there's some really interesting displays on Henry Pittock and his family plus Portland history in general.
The views over the city are outstanding.

Great view

By Zoe A |

We had fun walking around and exploring all the rooms in the mansion. The view from this property was so beautiful!

Interesting history lesson and great views

By Leslie D |

I visited with my husband and 10 month old daughter last year. We had an enjoyable time. The views from the hill are spectacular but I particularly enjoyed learning the history of the home and those that lived there.

Leaned a lot!

By Tina L |

We came here with our city tour and it was amazing! The place is beautiful and learned a lot from the tour. You get to see the inside of the mansion and all the furnitures and designed of the old days. Also get to learned about the people who used to live inside the mansion and their story! It’s filled with Portland history ! Highly recommended !

Pittock mansion

By Jules |

We drove up these winding roads to Pittock Mansion and I must say it was both charming and scary at the same time. Was great architectural structure but house did give a sense that there were ghost watching us. Was also a great view of the city as well. I felt myself drawn into past hypocrisy the picturesque surroundings. The original owner of property had great insight of the future. Would recommend visiting.

The Pittock Mansion is honestly a fine home which represents progressive thinkers of its time. The beautifully preserved home is worth seeing and I would definitely recommend everyone to give it a try.

Beautiful in every way

By shewholovestoeat |

This is a must do in Portland. The home is massive, and the grounds are fantastic. Christmas is especially wonderful with all the decor. Wow.

FYI--his bathroom is worth the whole price of admission. For an over 100 year old home, it could hold up today!

Go, enjoy!

Stunning View of the City from the Overlook

By TheExplorerFamily |

The16,000 square feet Mansion is 4 stores tall and consists of 46 rooms. Originally built in 1914 for Henry Pittock, it is now owned by the Portland Bureau of Parks and Recreation.

We were disappointed not to have the time to take a tour of this Mansion, but our city tour only took us around to the gardens and the Viewpoint. From there we were able to view the city of Portland from a very high elevation. Fortunately, the day was bright and clear, and we were also able to see Mount Hood in the distance. What a bonus that was…!

We would certainly like to return at some point to see the Mansion from the inside.

Well done self guided house

By D T |

Beautiful house with a very well done self guided tour. If you like visiting lovely houses with gardens, this is for you!

very good - almost excellent but for some bizarre decorating choices clunky covid protocols that interfere with pacing

By scott r |

Fascinating house design, spectacular gardens and view, generally informative displays/signage. It is worth the tour and the setting is spectacular. That said, you proceed from one roped off area to another and sometimes get a livestock through the chute feeling which might be part covid and part that this is a very popular attraction. Caretaker's house was supposedly open and would have loved to see it as it plays an integral part in the family history - but it was locked. Rooms sometimes decorated by interior designers' (term used loosely) interpretations of xyz 'period' that has nothing to do with the house itself nor how it would have been decorated c.1910. Interesting history of Vanport on basement level - a story I did not know. With popularity of the place they probably do have limit access as is done, but compared with, say, the Overholser in OKC, the Bingham-Waggoner in Independence or Salisbury House in Des Moines, you get a much less thorough experience here.

Grand style

By lbenitz |

This was a treat to tour. Such innovations for the time it was built and beautiful woodwork and decorations. Worth a visit.

Lovely Old House

By Pat H |

This house was built in the 1850's. Take a self tour and as much time as you need. Grounds are beautiful and views of Portland . Enjoyed it very much.

An American Castle on the Hill overlooking Portland

By westernboy007 |

This mansion built by a newspaper magnate in the early 1900's is quality construction of Sandstone, marble and granite. Two stories of opulence built to please a woman who was partially crippled, and then abandoned as the family members passed. Saved by concerned citizens of the community and the City itself, this beautiful home is open to the public with historic notes throughout identifying various rooms and personal items. Beautiful well kept grounds with rose gardens and mature trees exist throughout the site. The overview of Portland and an early worlds fair site cap the experience. Parking is free and close but there is a small entry fee. Definitely worth visiting.

Great spot for a picnic and definitely the VIEW

By E O |

Recently re-visited the grounds of Pittock Mansion just to walk around and admire the magnificent building and grounds. It was early Fall and sunset was coming on and it was so nice to just go walk around up there and take in the view and the incredible accomplishment of this mansion. What a legacy. It's been eons since I actually went inside and this particular visit was intended only for the outside walk about because it had been awhile since I went up there. What a nice confirmation! This is a treasure in Portland and even if you don't have time to tour the mansion, it is worth it for a walk-about and the view (on clear days, of course).

Beautiful House & Large Rooms

By Michelle G |

Beautiful house! I would advise the person giving the tour to get to the point quicker! The views from the grounds were breathtaking.

Great Views on a Clear Day

By Faireborn |

If you are looking for a gorgeous view of Portland and the surrounding mountains, the Pittock Mansion is a great place to visit. There is a fee if you want to tour the Mansion, but walking the beautiful property is free!

Skip the Mansion but come Walk the Grounds and See the View

By Renee R |

I rate the mansion itself 1-2 stars. There were so few items original to the Pittocks. Additionally, the rooms would be set up for the period but then the description says that it was not the way the Pittocks used it. One even said the bed used was not fancy enough. Personally, I want to see the "not fancy original bed" not a fancy period one!

The holiday decorations, though pretty, were not period at all. It actually distracted from the enjoyment of seeing the mansion. (This was my first visit.)

The reason for the three stars is that the view, the grounds, and the outside of the mansion are lovely and a 5-star experience. I would personally recommend driving up, paying the $2-3 dollars to park and walking the grounds. If you walk the backside, you will see an amazing view of Portland!

Lovely piece of History

By maxona |

There is parking at this venue, although small, so plan ahead of time. I would highly suggest signing up for the tour while you are there. There are interesting tidbits you will get that you will miss by just walking through. (like the ceiling in the living room- you have to take the tour to find out!) The home is very lovely. If you are interested in Portland history, or just history in general, architecture, construction, or interior design, I think you would enjoy this Home and tour.

The Gardens surrounding the Home and lovely and you can walk around outside. There is a awesome view of downtown Portland, and when the weather is clear, you can see Mt Hood.

Enjoyable self guided tour

By DrGingerP |

Last week I took the self guided tour here. This home was very unusual for the time in which it was built, and they’ve done a fantastic job of restoring and furnishing it over the years. Beautiful gardens and views. Worth a visit!

Interesting historically!

By Richard Tebaldi |

Historically interesting home. We'd recently been to Mark Twain's home in Connecticut which was also very impressive.

Beautiful Mansion furnished with lovely antiques!

By Janet A |

The Pittock Mansion requested that we reserve and purchase our tickets online prior to showing up, but that was not necessary. It was a pretty ride up the mountain to the mansion and we took a self-guided tour that took us approximately one hour to complete. There was quite a lot of written information about the home and the people who lived in it. The tour was Covid-19 safe as could be, with one way passages throughout and 6 foot designations between people. Afterwards, since it was a sunny day, we enjoyed a tour of the gardens as well as a picturesque view of Mount Hood.

Breathtaking Gardens

By Priscilla P |

I went to the gardens of Pittock Mansion as part of a tour. They have beautiful gardens with a breathtaking view of the city and Mt Hood.

A very interesting stop in Portland. Beautiful house and Gardens. Restored very nicely . Well worth’s visit.

This is a very well restored home and gardens of Mr Pittock a publisher and one of The richest men in Portland.
A nicely restored home ang garden.

Beautiful mansion with gorgeous views

By Laura R |

This is a beautiful old house that was restored well. There is an exhibit in the basement that is very interesting. The grounds also offer a beautiful view of Portland. It takes about an hour to an hour and a half to see the whole mansion and grounds. It’s located in a park which is stunning. It’s a nice way to spend the afternoon.

Beautiful Home

By Diane B |

Definitely take advantage of a docent-led tour of this gorgeous house. You will definitely get more information about it, the furnishings and the family who once called this their home. The grand staircase on the two floors is a real "jaw-dropper". I am so glad we visited it and would recommend it to anyone interested in the past.

Great tour and view

By masonsgalpal |

Fun if you love to tour old houses. No audio tour but lots of signage explaining the significance of the items in the house. Interesting that they had "Plague" rooms for the ill. The grounds are pretty to walk on and the view of Portland makes for great photos! Beware, signs posted in the parking lot to have your car "show room ready" to avoid smash and grab incidents. Did not see anything while we were there, but if signs are up there must be an issue.

Beautiful house with fantastic views of Portland!

Everyone recommended we visit Pittock Mansion and boy am I glad we did. Learned some about the history of Portland and the Pittock Mansion and the views of Portland were breathtaking!

Best mansion I ever seen

By Sikandar Sayyed |

This property is more than 100 years old but still in good condition. If you are in Portland you must visit this place. You can see an amazing view of entire Portland city from the top. This is a beautiful property surrounded by trees and flowers.
Few things need to consider or you have take precaution-
- book the two way cab or any vehicle
- it’s very difficult to get uber or taxi ride while going back
- try to finish everything before sun goes down
- you can’t walk through highway it’s one of the dangerous road
- No eatables or stalls available
- get some snacks and plenty of water with you.

A little pricey for the experience, but nice

By MyersFamilyTravelers |

We have been to the Biltmore and Breakers, and while we didn't expect anything that grand, this was a little lackluster for the price. Still nice history of the family and how the house was built and the area is beautiful. If you like visiting historic mansions it is probably worth the trip.

Beautiful grounds

By Avrilmo |

Architecture tour was led by a volunteer who knowledgeable. The mansion grounds has the best view of Portland. It is a beautiful house and worthy of a visit.

History Lesson for all and an inspring story

By Chris |

We greatly enjoyed this visit and recomment it to all who pass through Portland. We enjoyed it as much as the Hearst Castle tour although very different as this was not a majestic building for the lavishly rich but more a time capsule into the era of the wealthy but grounded personality.

A fascinating look at another era

By Jim B. |

The mansion of the London-born local newspaper publisher is a delightful look at how the super-rich and powerfully influential of the early 20th century lived. A nice touch is a painting of Mt. St. Helens long before it blew its top.

Very interesting house with furnishings and lots of art to illustrate life at the turn of the century. Highly recommend visiting - the surrounding gardens are breathtaking.

Gerat hike to the top

Followed the wildwood trail up to the mansion. Took about 45 minutes up, 30 minutes back down. Great view at the top. Only 2 bathrooms pre-tickets. Some seating outside as well. Walking the grounds is free. Didn't buy the ticket to go inside.

Beautiful

By Susan J |

We loved this place, it is full of history, it is on the top of the Portland hills, giving it a great observation point. The house itself is really cool to walk through. I had crutches, and they were very accommodating and gave me a ride in the elevator. There is a historical area in the basement which is also very good, to learn about the history of the area. A highlight of our trip.

👍 WOW Just Beautiful

By CDM49 |

Didn’t know what to expect driving up the narrow winding road. We had never heard of the Pittock family. We parked in the lot, paid for our entrance then before going in toured the grounds and gate house. The view from the hill overlooking the city of Portland is worth some time. The mansion is of course very large and we spent over two hours inside. It was fully decorated for the holidays in every room. We were very lucky as I told the docent that my spouse is also a docent in another mansion he gave us a private tour and a ride in the elevator which most others don’t receive. This is definitely a must see if interested in historical sites.

Exquisite Views!

By db7477 |

Now this living! A visit to the Pittock Mansion’s a MUST. The views of Portland (on a clear day) are spectacular. It’s a very short drive from Washington Park and is not to be missed.

This is a great way to learn more about the city of Portland. Throughout the house, there is info all over regarding the history of Portland. There are also amazing views of the city since the house sits up on the hillside. I highly recommend seeing this landmark.

Must see

Historic house with a ton of great features. Easy to access by public transportation. A must see while in Portland.

I liked it

By Mabel |

I don’t think many visitors have paid to get inside as you can walk around the mansion for free. You can take nice photos from outside and enjoy the view. But personally I think It’d be a shame not to visit this place properly so I did pay to see all the rooms as well. It only costs $12 to go inside and I thought it was quite interesting. I enjoyed my visit.

Nice mansion and history

By Joe R |

Nice wonderful mansion that showcases the family and and their lives and everything else. Even the views from outside the mansion is nice. Worth the time to take an hour to see.

Another American rags to riches story.

By blackfootcamp |

Here’s another example of a man getting off the boat and in this particular instance with no money or shoes and turning his life around through dedication, hard work and perseverance. The end result is this marvelous home setting high atop a hill over-looking a budding Portland and the majesty of Mount Hood. The mansion, in its day, boasted all the firsts. It had electricity, it had central heating, it had telephone service, it had running water, it had plumbing, it had marble from Europe, granite from California and rocks from a local quarry down the road. It is said that the marble took 6 months to bring over from Europe and the quarried stone came in by rail. The house was 5 years in the making and sits on 42 acres. There seems not to be one window in the house that doesn’t look out on an awe-inspiring vista. Even with the city of Portland now being visible through lots of the windows, it’s still a majestic view.

Magnificent Mansion from a Bygone Era

By Oskarduck |

The mansion is in a superb location with wonderful views of the city. It was fun to tour the mansion and imagine what life was like back in the day. It was pretty good! The grounds surrounding the mansion are beautifully maintained by volunteers.

One of the best lookouts over Portland

By Mr. B |

I visited the Pittock Mansion strictly for the lookout based on recommendations. There is no admission fee to walk around the mansion. Parking was free and once you get to the "backyard" you are rewarded with an expansive view over Portland and beyond. Along the various paved walkways there are history panels explaining different stories about the Pittock family. Great experience! I strongly suggest stopping by here if you are in Portland.

A Mansion With an Incredible View

By Jeffrey J |

High a top the hills of Portland a smaller mansion sits, with better grounds than an inside and amazing views. The mansion inside felt crampt because he made rooms for all his relatives so there were a bunch of smallish rooms for a mansion. Meanwhile the invebtions in some of the rooms were lretty cool and decades ahead of their time. If only his relatives had been as inventive as he was they would have kept the mansion and fortune. Definitely a great place to stop by if you are in town for a couple days.

Wonderful Place

By captclark |

I love it when communities rally to save beautiful old estates like this. Fortunately, when the weather put this uninhabited place in jeopardy years ago, a lot of great effort has resulted in a fabulous experience for all.of us to enjoy.

The woodwork alone is worth the time here, and there is so much to see. Many rooms of lovely period furnishings, and beautiful views from every side of the nicely landscaped, hilltop location.

Don't miss it!

Great intro to Portland in every way

By BrakiWorldTraveler |

Driving from the west, from the Oregon coast during our 8 day Pacific NW tour, this mansion was our first stop in Portland.
It's set on a hill above Portland, in the western suburbs. Fair size paying parking lot onsite.
I would suggest this to be your first stop in Portland also, as it gives you a good introduction to Oregon's biggest city in two ways.
First, you'll learn it was the Pittocks who turned this place from a small muddy village into a booming metropolis.
Second, from the mansion grounds - park around the house, there's the best Portland viewpoint - you'll have the entire city beneath you.
Touring the house is paying and you can easily skip it. Nothing unseen (specially if you're coming from Europe) and I doubt the authenticity from early 20c.
Walking the grounds is totally free along with the viewpoint, gardens, etc...

Beautiful mountain setting

By naddy444 |

This was a great exhibit! The house is located up the mountain a bit surrounded by trees. There is a network of trails up there as well! The view of the city from the house it outstanding and there is a great picnic area with stunning city views. The rate was $12 for adults and I felt that a fair price.
Please note, most of the furniture in the house do NOT belong to the family that lived there. Only a few are theirs. However the furniture is donated from other notable families from that era in that area. It is still very well done.
The property is gorgeous with the gardens and views.
Definitely worth a visit!
They do have an elevator but I am unsure as to how operational it is as it is original to the house. If you need an elevator, I would suggest calling in advance as there are a lot of stairs if you cannot use the elevator.

Beautiful views, interesting historical mansion

Beautiful grounds and very interesting mansion. Lots of signage with historical context for the home and family that lived there. Stunning views of the city and if the sky is clear the mountain beyond.

Great view of Portland

We stopped into the Pittock Mansion to check out the view of Portland. The weather wasn’t great, but there was still a great view of the city. There are some great trails surrounding the Mansion!

Don't go at Xmas, if you go at all

By Heidi S |

The shell of the mansion, it's history, and most of all, the setting in Washington Park may be worth seeing if you have nothing else to do. But since the furnishings and interior were ruined years ago. it's been replaced with non -original antiques. At Xmas, all of the rooms have been slathered with cheezy, kitchy Christmas displays. It was quite dreadful.

Pittock Mansion a great bit of history

By marimbagirl |

We toured Pittock Mansion on our trip to Portland and really loved it. The detail and the furnishings of the house were great. I loved the bathrooms especially. The family were so forward thinking in germ control and cleanliness. The view and the gardens surrounding were lovely too. A must see in Portland for history buffs.

So well kept and interesting from it's art work to the modern for the time bathrooms so incredible. The grounds are breath taking the view to Mt Hood is a photo opp not to be miss. Take a walk around the gardens and stop in at the Gate Lodge also wonderfully resorted home.

Gorgeous view of NW Portland

By Inger E |

Beautiful historical mansion with historical furnishings. A stately staircase. A view in the family kitchen and children's playroom, with toys you might recognize from your grandmothers home. A Christmas special is a unique opportunity , with Victorian era decorations. The view from the garden is amazing. Wonderful, steep trails of the Wikdwood lead to other local attractions. You can spend anywhere from an hour to half a day at this location.

Beautiful mansion with great views

We ubered to the mansion from our hotel. So glad we did. It is quite a hike up the hill to get there but so worth it. The house is lovely and laid out so everything is easy to see. The outside views are lovely and we had a semi-clear day so we could see quite a distance. We enjoyed our visit.

Beautiful home

Pittock Mansion, the Gate Lodge, the grounds, and the view were all beautiful. We took the self guided tour, and talked to some of the volunteers that were in various parts of the house. It was interesting and informative. We spent a very enjoyable 2 hours here! If you do not have your own transportation, or see this on a tour; we would suggest taking a Uber or Lyft. We took public transportation. The bus stop was about 1/2 mile from the mansion, and it was all up hill with many curves in the road and no sidewalks.

Well preserved slice of Portland history

Beautifully maintained mansion with all furnishings and photos of the time. Grounds are meticulous and gorgeous views of Portland to Mt Hood on a good day. Nice self guided tour with plenty of interesting photos and information placards on the walls.

Interesting part of Oregonian history

Beautiful mansion and gardens. Also, expansive view of the city.
Gave some history of Portland and how things got started and developed.

Gorgeous and enlightening!

By Cgm R |

The mansion was the home built for the Pittock family, some of the earliest movers and shakers in Portland. The history of the family was amazing -- immigrant to Oregon Trail to newspapers to investor - to mountain climber! The house also showcases some of the styles and technologies of the time it was built, 1918. Do see the gardens and the view of Portland.

christmas holiday visit to spectacular original Portland estate

By Jrc4545 |

Pittock's were among the founders of Portland, and used their financial successes to build a grand estate. House, high up on a hill overlooking downtown Portland, has been restored with furniture and design from the period and from the founding families of Portland. At Christmas, each room is decorated with a different theme and also live music. Family loved our visit.

Beautiful!

Cool old house in Portland with a lot of history. And the view is amazing! I'd build a house here too.

Grounds of the Pittock Mansion an all-day adventure.

By Susan S |

Had such a short time in Portland over mother's day weekend but my son wanted me to see the beautiful grounds of the Pittock Mansion. It was a beautiful sunny day and I was astounded at the view of Portland from the mansion lawns as well as the many beautiful flowering bushes. Groomed walking trails weaving between the trees made it a shady stroll. Lots of people with pets enjoying picnics on the grounds. Must visit!

Spectacular!

The Pittock Mansion is beautiful and historic. I loved every minute of the tour. Don't miss the shower in the master bath--very ingenious. The view is simply spectacular!

Beautiful home and grounds.

By Ruth L |

The mansion itself is beautiful as well as interesting. Mr. Pittock was one to have everything modern in his home. The bathrooms were amazing! (I would love to have one of those showers). The grounds are worth spending time wandering as well...gardens are well marked and well tended. Worth the cost and time!

Great Views

This was a lovely vantage point from which to take on the views of Portland and the surrounding area. Forest grounds were gorgeous as well...

If the ground hadn't been muddy from rain that week, I would have taken some other hikes throughout the property as well. Seemed like there was plenty to see and enjoy.

By shyboy2011 |

Decided to visit here as last time we only stopped to take photos.. it's a beautiful home inside..you walk around by yourself and there are guides that can answer any questions you may have..The furniture is beautiful and it's well looked after.. I particularly loved the marble staircase..

Note that the mansion is closed on some days; however, even on those days, the grounds are pretty and views fantastic. A nice addition to our Portland visit.

Gorgeous View

By Lawonridge |

We got to the mansion at 4 PM only to find out that they were closing 1/2 hour early due to a software upgrade (?) - and were not willing to discount the admission price (?) -- we enjoyed a stroll around the gardens and the gorgeous view of downtown Portland and the river. Worth the drive up just for that.

A good reprieve from the rain

By Janice A |

If you’ve been to the Hearst Castle, this place is underwhelming. Having said that, it is nice to see and imagine what it was like living there. The location is beautiful with views of the city and Mt Hood. The Staff was very friendly and helpful and the tours seemed informative. It’s also a great place to go when it’s raining!

Breathtaking gardens and view

By Penwah609 |

The mansion was closed due to COVID but it is still so worth going up to roam the gardens and enjoy the breathtaking views.

Beautiful views

By Martinfour4 |

The grounds around the mansion are beautifully groomed and taken care of. The views of Portland are awesome. There are also some neat hiking trails around.

Nice Mansion

This is a must see if you are visiting Portland. It gives you an ides of how the upper half lived in early Portland. Beautiful grounds overlooking the city. The home, I believe, was owned by the original owner of the newspaper "Oregonian. Easy to get to from downtown.
