Gem on Lake Champlain

By 534melody |

Beautiful walking trails through all different types of habitats. In addition there is a lovely beach on Lake Champlain with a southerly exposure. Many of the trails wind around points or heads out onto the lake

Nature

By PaleoGypsy |

If you enjoy being outside, you may really like the serene setting of this State Park. Check the weather forecast before you go, as powerful storms may blow up quickly. Tree limbs go sideways, and the skies turn dark. The energy of the water changes. During a nice-weather-day, look for frogs, turtles, herons, and other wildlife. If you enjoy birding , wildlife viewing, and hiking, this is the place to be. This area serves as an escape from the built-up environment that many of us are accustomed to living.

Hidden gem a stones throw from Plattsburgh NY

By Benoit N |

On the way to Plattsburgh from Montreal, wife and I decided to go for a quick stop at Point au Roches State Park. Or....we thought it would be a quick stop. Once there, we just could not leave. What a beautiful place! Great sandy beach, well maintained trails and amazing geology to chill in the sun. The pointe really is made of rocks! Easy to get to, dirt cheap to park (7$), plenty of parking, kiddy park, restrooms, changing rooms, clear clean water and rocks!!! Plenty of them! The good kind too! We very much enjoy Plattsburgh City Beach, but I think this will become our go-to place. Just beautiful!

Lovely, Scenic, and Peaceful

By Batya Y |

This is a quiet, beautiful park--lake (with some boats), lots of trails, free parking, clean "port-a-potty." A couple of benches facing the lake. Extremely peaceful and relaxing. I wish I leaved nearby because I'd visit very often.

Quiet trails

By ProfPlattsburgh |

I walk the trails several times a week in the morning. Most of the time, I am alone on the trails, on the edge of beautiful Lake Champlain. I love the feeling of having the entire park to myself.

Very scenic

By peacelilly811 |

I live nearby and always bring first time visitors to this park. Flat easy marked trails. One of the ttrails has an amazing view of Lake Champlain and across the way Vermont. It's also free.

nice park, right on the water

By Anne D |

There is ample parking and the park looked worth checking out. We were there to go on the Lake but might have been tempted to check it out of we had more time.

Great State Park

By Howard S |

I love this park as I launch my kayak here from Deep Bay (Lake Champlain), as the area is uncrowded, and has a dock and parking area. There are also hiking trails, one of which goes along the cliffs and provides great views of Lake Champlain. There is also a nice public beach in the park.

Nice trails just poorly marked

By FarAway801905 |

The trails up here are wide and easy walking views are pretty spectacular and varied. The biggest downfall is that the trails are very poorly marked and intersect and cross regularly. Local people were confused in trying to follow the site maps. Other than that it was an enjoyable place to hike we actually got to see some beavers crossing the road and ducks and a variety of wildlife

Nice Trails

By astraone333 |

Nice walking trails with beautiful back to nature park area! Good get-away from it all. As parks go average...particularly with Adirondack's near-by.

Gorgeous Park

By browniebrooklyn |

Excellent, well maintained and easy trails along the lake. The views are great and we saw a bald eagle.

Awwwww!

By Nursine J |

Beautifully maintained trails that give both peeks and majestic views of Lake Champlain. Obviously well enjoyed by fishermen and boaters. This is both a nice place to stop off to stretch your legs in the midst of a long drive, and a destination in and of itself. Great restaurants abound. Lovely Bed and breakfasts should be investigated and enjoyed.

Family Fun; Relaxing

By Stewie |

Great place on Lake Champlain's Treadwell Bay. Lots of family friendly trails with kiddos. You can find fossils on the Eastern side. Relaxing - Great Value - FREE

Nike hike

By Edie E |

Nice, well marked hiking trails by Lake Champlain. Plenty of trail options. Easy to moderate trails, with boating and beach available in season.

By Craig |

A great place to get away and relax. My family enjoys walking along all the different trails. Take the Long Point for an impressive view!

Beautiful nature walk

By slb10717 |

I love this walk especially with smallish kids. It's not hard or steep, but it's right along the lake and through the woods. I've gone many times with the kids, sometimes taking the dog with us and even been to a wedding on the point. There are different paths to get to the same place. It's a gorgeous walk and the rocks at the end of the walk (at the point) are a beautiful place to sit and watch the water for a bit. Throwing rocks into the water is one of my boys favorite things to do there and getting them to leave isn't easy.

See the lake [for those how have no boat]

By Rick H |

Great place to hike, except that odd summer the lake level went to 110' [normal 95'].
You hike out rocky points that jut out into the lake { places like Ram's Head }.
Weirdly shaped cedar trees. Never there to swim.

A spectacular yet easy hike around the point

By Liz M |

This is a nice easy hike that packs a real punch when it comes to natural beauty. Everything from the shaley shore on which you stand to the mountains across the lake is beautiful. We saw very few other people, and the park is dog friendly. The loop around the point is about an hour and a half if you are taking your time.

Something for Everyone

By Sharon R |

Pristine sandy beach and lake view trails make Point Au Roche State Park a delightful family friend and solo experience. Enjoy a day of geocaching or walking along the bay where you can observe turtles and sometimes a beaver lodge is built nearby From time to time the Friends of Pt Au Roche hold a night outing to observe the sky or listen to the owls One can walk the trails which are easy to navigate and there is a small interpretive center where you may learn about the flora and fauna of the area Wintertime brings the snow shoeing and cross county skiers to enjoy the scenery

Hike

By karen p |

I never realized how much point au roches Park had to offer. Lived here 30+ years and finally found out. I’ve been here about 5 times now. It’s not real busy, rams head is a beautiful walk along the lake. I’ve kayaked too and it’s spectacular views put you at peace. Easy hiking for those of us with knee issues ore small kids. Great family outing to enjoy the outdoors!

Nice park to hike in, beautiful views.

By Raymond M |

Hiked here during a stay for our 32nd anniversary. Very nice park...there are three 'points' you can hike, and there is a mooring area in Deep Bay for boats coming in from Lake Champlain. It is all free unless you go to the other side of Short Point to swim...which we did not. We recommend going out Long Point all the way to Rocky Point. There are two benches there, and a wonderful view across the lake. You will walk about 3.2 miles (1.6 miles each way), but it is all pretty level and well maintained.

pretty beach

By masseyfj5 |

We visited to get photos of Lake Champlain. There are pretty views of the lake with boats and mountains in the background to boot! There is a nice playground and walks. The beach has a lifeguard. We didn't go into the water, but it looks like a nice building for changing clothes is available.

Free place to walk and enjoy nature

By adklove78 |

It is free to access the park if you go in the second entrance by the nature center. You can park there and walk on a number of trails. You can also go through the main entrance, pay a fee and use the beach/picnic area.

Nice, clean beach with good hiking

By HappyCampers547 |

If you're looking for a peaceful place to have a picnic, this is a good pick. Sandy beaches. Not much algae. Good hiking trail.

Near perfect

By Julia O |

Serene. Interesting. A true nature-walkers park. Easy in and out. Nice trails and not difficult (I walked it with torn ACL without much trouble). Gorgeous views. Just wish it had a decent restaurant.

A short visit in the early morning

By Jeff10601 |

We drove to the park around 8 AM on the day after Thanksgiving. Not many people were there at that hour. It was worth the short drive from the Golden Gate Motel. Nice views of Lake Champlain from both beach and boat ramp. The most interesting thing was seeing a huge group of snow geese in a field just off the road leading to the park.

Great place to walk your dog and enjoy nature.

By `Harvey L |

Just a great place to visit and walk your dog. The park has as nice beach also picnic area.the park has a really boat launch. Very nice trail to walk or ride a bike.

Terrific place to walk

By JennieDGB |

My husband and two dogs walk here everyweekend in the winter and more often in the summer. There are great views of Lake Champlain. Terrific place to stretch your legs.

Enjoy Nature on Lake Champlain

By KayTee9 |

This is a clean and relatively laid back park and beach, not pretentious at all. Just a really nice place to take the family for a picnic, walking, or to enjoy a low cost couples outing communing with nature. I love Lake Champlain and this Park is located on part of its New York shore. We have relatives that live near the Park, so we visit from time to time. I always look forward to walking on the beach or the trails. A nice place to spend the day and enjoy the natural surroundings.

Beautiful park

By UF_RX_1999 |

My wife, two year old and I visited after staying overnight in Plattsurg one night and before heading out for a long car ride. Unfortunately, it rained the entire time we were there so we didn't get to explore too much. However, we could tell this was a beautiful park. Playground and small beach / swimming area for the kids and lots of hiking trails through the woods or along the lake.

It seemed very peaceful and not developed...just bad timing on our part with regards to the weather. It looks like there are a couple of entrances and parking areas, though we didn't get to explore too much.

a special place near town

By janetleemorton |

This is a wonderful place for a short walk through old growth forest on conserved farmland, situated on a point of land on Lake Champlain about 30 minutes south of the Canadian border. The surrounding shoreline is composed of very interesting shale, where one can sit quietly while watching gulls fly and colorful sailboats float by. it is a peaceful place but there is also a public swimming beach and Nature Center with educational programs available. I have been told it is great in winter for gentle cross country skiing. A fine spot in summer for a quick touch of Mother Nature in repose. Boats can be put into the lake at 2 locations, and the main access is on Lake Shore Drive which is great for biking and just 10 minutes north of the city Plattsburgh. I noticed a fine looking B+B directly across form the Wildlife Viewing area entrance.

Perfect autumn walking trails...

By A. W |

gorgeous trails to hike around the edges of the lake. It was chilly but stunningly beautiful. we lucked out with perfect weather - but the park is easy to reach, a few choices of parking lots for easy access - and all along the lake...heavenly.

Great place to take a scenic walk near the Lake

By Jannette K |

The views are great the walk is so nice, pets allowed and bikers too. Two routes to choose from and a place to have a meeting (prayer) or just sit and enjoy the view.

Relaxing hike

By Sharon F |

We really enjoyed the one trail that we hiked along with family members - the views of Lake Champlain were great and the grandkids loved skipping rocks and climbing some trees!

Nice Park

By 52607Smiling |

Nice park. I prefer the interpretive center. You can find free places to go fishing. The Interpretive center has some nice trails for a pleasant walk as long as you stay on the paths. Saw much poison ivy but the paths are very wide so just stay on the paths.

This place is a joke

By cnx4789 |

Filthy bathrooms and all but one stall had toilet paper. The showers didn't work and the floors were soaking wet. The playground was small and had water on the slides. They don't have trash cans anywhere on the property. They have no smoking signs although clearly it's not enforced. There was an awful smell near the lifeguard post. And the swimming area doesn't get very deep. This was our first and last time here. If I hadn't gotten free entry for an event I would of wanted a refund.

State Park

By LauraFF7 |

Easy walking trails, lots of places along the trails to throw a fishing line into Lake Champlain, a boat launch with good access to several bays with lots of fish, small beach, brand new playground this year, lots of grassy areas with picnic tables and grills.

If you only want to use the trails, use the SECOND entrance to the park and then you do not have to pay any kind of entrance fee. We take our dog for long walks in the woods pretty much every weekend, weather permitting.

Use the first entrance with the (I believe) $7 per carload fee if you want to use the boat launch or beach/playground/picnic area.

If you love the outdoors, this place is for you

By meisje7 |

Lots of fun trails for easy walking to a bit of rock climbing. Some of the trails are right near Lake Champlain where you can sit and take in the beautiful views.

Nature at it's best, close to a lot of history.

By bommadawn |

On beautiful Lake Champlain overlooking VT shore and site of Battle of Plattsburgh historical area. Great natural wildlife area with campsites and day use area. Long sandy beach with canoeing/kayaking, windsurfing, fishing areas as well. area closes for season but still open for people to enjoy without the frills. Bring binoculars to see heron nesting sites, osprey nests close to the road, eagles fishing, and other small creatures. Great walking areas.

Pt AuRoche Adventures

Discover the past and nature. Remnants of Camp Red Cloud/Redwing including the outdoor chapel and a sleeping cabin. Also search for hints of the Fantasy Kingdom amusement park. Great nature trails and fantastic views of Lake Champlain, The Green and Adirondack Mountains.

Hikers paradise

By gillis g |

I have never seen this area in such good shape. The trails and facilities are extremely well maintained this year. We visit the trails daily and observe the workers as they perform their duties. They all seem to enjoy what they are doing. All have great work habits and most likely good supervision.

Very clean, not too busy

By Travel1207 |

No blue green algae. Water very shallow, but clean. Lifeguards on duty. Reasonably priced. Clean surroundings, lots of parking, although they could have more shade. Picnic tables available.
Lovely location.

Beach

By Theisen1 |

The beach is clean and uncrowded. There is also a very nice playground for the kids. This park includes walking trails, picnic benches, grills, and bathrooms.

good for walk your dog.

By Marcia R |

it has a beautiful view at the point au Roches. Good for a break and hearing the sound of the water on the rocks. peaceful! Me and my little French had some fun. But, the way back we got lost. Be sure, if you don't know the way, keep the same path to go and back.

relaxing at the beach

By Sylvie L |

What a wonderful place. We had the beach for ourselves and the water was so warm. Nice place for a picnic and a walk through the trails.

Pleasant beach and park

By NYmom |

We went as a family in spring; before beach officially opened. There's a very nice playground, reasonable size beach, boat launch area and many trails for walking. Definitely was a pleasant experience in springtime for us.

Beautiful, clean, scenic park. Perfect for families!

By JodiYB |

I have visited Point Au Roche State park on several occasions to hike/walk and go to the beach. If you are looking for easy, well-kept trails that are suitable for hikers of any age this park is perfect. It's nice because you can experience the woods, beach and water all in one place and could probably do all the trails over the course of a day. The beach is wonderful--there is a brand new playground there which is a also great draw for kids (not sure if it is open or not yet but it looks pretty close to completion). There are many spots for a nice picnic as well as a paved trail great for bikes. It's a gem!

Great day

By jgatsby |

Went to this park for a restful day out. It was mid week so virtually empty. We hiked a paved trail and saw a few interesting species of wildlife. The beach area on Lake Champlain was clean and seemed ideal for families or people involved in water sports. Park staff kept the public areas well tended and attractive

Nice place for family or small groups

By wizardinfo |

Too many Quebecers but a nice small beach for any small group, couple, or single individual. Nice views, clean water, and plenty of picnic table and parking make for a nice place.

Great hiking with the dogs!

By HeatherHowes |

We hiked Long point with our two little dogs. It was about 2.6 miles for round trip to the point and back. Great time. Wish we packed lunch to eat on the beach. If it wasn't raining today, we would have hiked middle point. Just a word to the wise, there are multiple entrances. If you are just there for hiking, don't do in the beach/boat launch entrance or you will have to pay a day use fee.

Great place

By sant33220 |

One of my favorite places in the area. It is a perfect spot for hiking, biking, picnicking, swimming going to the beach. It is good place for X country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter as well. You can go on the trails for hours. The beach on the right side of the main beach is a good spot to bring your boat when you are on the lake and want to rest up and lay on a beach. If you haven't been to this park I recommend checking it out.

Gorgeous

By Valeri R |

This area has it all! Walking trails, clean water, lots of nature. Easy access to a beach, boat launch and park - with swings, slide, volleyball and picnic areas!
Bring bug spray b/c the open walking/hiking areas can get pretty buggy!!

Trails and scenery

By tta77 |

we enjoyed the wintery scenery and choice of trails. The view of Lake Champlain was nice. not really anything to dislike.

Urban camping

By Citrusbreeze |

Clean, manicured lawns, children playgrounds. It is a very nice city park on Lake Champlain. We like rural, natural settings that make you feel like you are close to unspoiled nature. If you wish to camp as if on someone's lawn, with all the amenities of a well kept city park, then this is right for you.
Personally, give us the woods!

Beautiful park

By michele p |

Have visited Plattsburgh for 30 years and don't remember ever coming to this part. however, my daughter has been here. She loved it. Drove around the park briefly while visiting over Christmas. Can't wait to return in the summer.

A great walk any season

By MOBRugger |

Great place to take your dogs for a walk, any season. Lots of different trails and great views of Lake Champlain.

Nice park, but the beach is overrated.

By David Catriel |

The park is very clean and well maintained, and it looks like they're also adding a modern playground for kids this year. The beach, though, because it is rather small (about 15' deep by maybe 300' wide).

Very nice trail

By Charles F |

Our party of four (60+ yrs each) visited the park this past Sunday. It was a beautiful day, having just sprinkled overnight. We walked on the trail that took us to Rocky Point. It was not a difficult "hike" in/out at all. The view at the Point was just gorgeous. I enjoyed stopping along the way to read the signs posted on the trees-which described the main characteristics of the species. We did not realize a Guide Map was available at the Ranger Station. There were many points of interest labeled on the trail corresponding to information on the map. Wish we stopped in here first! Our particular walk was just shy of 3 miles, which took us 90 minutes total on this excursion. We left from the upper parking area, where the ranger, maps and guides are located. I did not notice if the trail lengths were indicated anywhere, which I would have found helpful. (I'll have to look more closely next visit.) There seemed to be quite a few trails marked off for walking and lots of varied groups of people enjoying the park. We brought a picnic lunch and found a table with a beautiful view of the lake.

Beautiful with something for everyone

By Amy |

The park has a sandy beach, hiking trails, wetlands, forest, grassland... You can hike, swim, bike, ride your horse, go birdwatching, watch wildlife, do all sorts of water sports...or just sit back and watch the waves on the Lake. The beach is the first entrance. To get to trails continue past this entrance.

What a great find

By happytrailsNewYork |

We had a lovely walk to the the longest point overlooking Lake Champlain. With so many trails to try this location provides a lot of great choices. Super for families, couples, individuals, dogs, etc.

Go by boat or go by land

By Big_Daddy_VT |

Either way you'll love it. Big sandy beach! Warm water. Shallow. Great family time. Bring a friend you won't forget it anytime soon!

nice trails

By lizcoughlin |

This park had several trails that were great for a baby stroller. There were mosquitoes so you might want to bring repellent:)

Lovely

By GmaSandra |

What a lovely spot. We went to the park for a picnic. There are many picnic tables and benches. The it's also a very clean bathhouse. Lots of parking. The beach was closed to swimming but we knew this based on their website.

A true sampling of Lake Champlain.

By Shannon N |

Point Au Roche State Park is a family favorite for us. We often moor there while boating because the swimming and beachfront is incredible. Additionally, we love to ride bikes and head out for a run on their many trails. If you live in the area, you should definitely pack a picnic lunch and have a blast at Point Au Roche. The bathrooms are seasonal and they haven't had the snack bar open for several years, but there are still lifeguards on duty for the summer months and plenty of picnic tables and grassy areas to relax on. Doggies welcome too!

beautiful quiet beach

By happycamper935 |

the beach with the kids is a great day out. This beach is clean. not overcrowded and offers a nice picnic area.

Let's go Camping

By Q4811SEmichaelb |

Many years ago my best friend worked there, Ricky Jarvis. worked for the park systems. we would travel all over the area's of upstate New York. but we always found, Point Au Roches, a fast getaway, , get area to fish, and skate on the ice for the winter. sure do miss, not having my friend around.

Very much liked this park!

By lindasA9006QL |

This is a beautiful park. We spent the day here and it was nice and peaceful. We just sat and watched the water.

Something for everyone

By Howe7 |

For day hiking in any season this park is for everyone. The park has well marked trails and wonderful views of tLake Champlain, Vermont & New York.

Excellent playground, beach, and hiking trails

By Mary Lou R |

Enjoy Lake Champlain with your family. The playground and facilities are clean and up to date. Great place for family gatherings with tents and a gazebo. The trails are great too! Lots of outdoor activities. Lifeguards on duty for the summer!

Relaxing, Scenic

By Trish d |

Although it's been a while since I've visited this park, I always found it to be beautiful. There is a wonderful set of walking trails and lots of scenic coastline (Lake Champlain) for you to sit and enjoy the views and the peace.

Nice family park.

By CHAS S |

Even though it was too cold and windy for swimming the life guards were there to take care of the area. It faces south so there is great sun when not covered by clouds. The picnic areas and bathrooms are very clean and in great shape. The grill we used was a bit worn out, but it worked fine. I guess the walk out to the one point is to a haunted spot where the foundation is left from a house where they supposedly burned a house down with a group of sisters inside, I guess they were witches. So I didn't check it out, but that's what the locals claim!

Nice location

By Wendy B |

We went for a ladies meeting and it was the perfect location. It's always clean, breezy and enjoyable.

Perfect spot to bring your dog and kids for a walk!

By topaz89 |

Beautiful surroundings - views of the lake and lots of wildlife. Many different trails of various lengths. Great place to have a picnic.

Beach graduation event

By dvshmb |

A great spot to gather for a graduation event. This park is large and well kept. Clean beach house for changing and rest room use. Clean soft sand and clear water make this comfortable for all. Small state fee to enter per carload. A state boat ramp and easy lake access from Lake Champlain makes this area boater friendly. Many lake going craft anchored out to enjoy the beach. Volleyball nets, sun shade tents in use. Hiking trails are fun too, bicycle friendly.

Hard to beat

By Erik L |

Excellent spot for some flat trail running and bird watching. Several trail options offer lakeside running with great views across the lake.

good views, good trails

By Don R |

The park has an extensive network of trails for walking or hiking. Directions are only fair, but you can't get too lost. The view of the Lake is excellent and varied. Some trails are walkers only, others open to cyclists and equestrians.

Calm and peaceful

By rangerf75 |

A wonderful quiet place to walk on well marked trails, collect your thoughts and be surrounded by the beauty of nature. Definitely special

beautiful place must see and enjoy

By smiley82463 |

This is a very beautiful place. One of my favorite parks for ny state. nice beach, sandy, beautiful views of the lake, playground and picnic areas for family, and nice hiking, some times even see the deer walking by.

If you just want a picnic with peace and quite for a break from work, or spending the whole day with family and pets highly recommend visting this park in the Plattsburgh ny area.

Lots of trails

By Julia R |

Great for hiking, biking, walking the dogs, the beach is nice, they are building a new play area for the kids (slides, swings, etc).

Small Hidden State Park

By Bob and Joan |

This smallish state park has a quaint little beach which has life guards and close to a boat launch. The park entrance fee is $7. No food sold here, but they do have cold showers and a changing area. The beach area was not staffed with lifeguards until 11 AM. The park also has numerous walking trails.

nature walk

By happycamper935 |

This is my favorite beach on Lake Champlain. The beach is very clean, the wash rooms offer a shower and are kept tidy and there is a nature walk path which I enjoy immensely. And the best part...not ever over crowded!

Good, but....

By Profjr |

This park is in a lovely area and has a wonderful beach. Water is shallow so this would be great to bring kids to.
However, I was amazed at how poorly it was 'signed'. First, when you enter at the beach there are no maps to guide you beyond the beach. In order to get to the trails you have to go to a different entrance but again, this is not noted or marked. Then when you get to the start of the trails, they are so poorly marked I almost laughed. I am from a part of the county where trails are clearly marked and so I was taken aback at how primitive the trail markings were.
that said, we ended up walking the bike path (because it was again poorly marked and we couldn't find the walking trails). It was a lovely walk.
So, to sum up- State of New York: you have a park on a beautiful site- why don't you mark it better with better signage so folks could a)find where they are going and b) get some education as to what they are seeing.
Tons of potential not being utilized.

Windy

By Bobby44881 |

We mostly drove thru and around. Nice facilities but not great. Liked the beach area but was cool and very windy when we were there so we opted out of hiking.

Best kept secret near Plattsburg !

By Ron P |

Awesome park that is not very busy. We went to the main beach nead the parking lot, but found a secluded beach near by (St-Armand's beach) that was totally empty !! Point Au Roches park is a wonderful place to picnic; the beach is delightful with beautiful sand and clean water for swimming; Restroom and changing rooms that are well kept. And beautiful place to walk on trails that wind around the water inlets.

Nice view

By Nora Sharif |

it was definitely much needed the time I went there! my only complain is the plage had so much sands in the water, which was a bit scary! it was kinda dragging us down in some spots. so we had to change our location a bit to the center to avoid this situation.

More than just a beach!

By Lynn M |

Yes, the beach here is wonderful, but there is so much more to it. We love the nature trails. Especially the nice paved trail that runs between the boat launch and Interpretive Center. We take my husband's elderly father on this in a wheelchair so he can enjoy the feeling of being "in the woods:

Plattsburg adventures

By Faith G |

I love the outdoors and this was a beautiful park. It's close by and worth the few miles to get there.

Scenic setting along beautiful Lake Champlain

By Noonmark2 |

First, I would start by pointing out that this is Point Au Roche State Park. "Roche" is not plural.

As for the park itself, there's much to be smitten with. There are over six miles of coast along Lake Champlain, most of which is rocky and wonderfully "raw." One can also find sandy beaches in the bays, as well as wetlands along the shores. There are many miles of hiking trails that explore everything from the three peninsulas that jut out into the lake to the interior fields and wetlands. I've never been there in winter, but I understand that the Park's trails offer very good and isolated cross-country skiing. If you're a pleasure boater, the Park has plenty for you, including mooring in Deep Bay. Canoeists and Kayakers probably won't find Point Au Roche to be their favorite place, if only because Lake Champlain is often windy with ornery - but impressive - high waves and whitecaps. Folks in sea kayaks won't be so deterred. Lastly, the scenery of the place is memorable, and it will make you want to return again and again.

Great venue for couples, family, friends

By Countrydoc90 |

A park that offers natural beauty year round. Beautiful sandy beach, recreation area with grills, playground for children. Multiple walking trails with water access and fantastic for cross country skiing in the winter. Beautiful views and a way to get close to nature including beautiful flowers and animals. A real gem in the Noeth Country. A treasure....

Great Beach

By markus664 |

Beach was very clean and the swimming was great. The facilities are a bit dated but they were functioning. Good place to spend the day.

Well maintained and scenic

By Juanita W |

The trails seemed to be well maintained, clearly marked, and offered varied views. Easy to get to and plenty of parking.

Hidden Gem

By Marc B |

This state park has all that you need for an enjoyable day trip just about 1 hour and fifteen minutes from Montreal. It has walking and biking trails, clean and shaded picnic areas and a nice little sandy beach with clean and relatively modern changing rooms and toilets. The grounds are equipped with a modern playground. The entry fee is very reasonable.
It is conveniently located just north of Plattsburg so you can take a little side trip to shop as well. It is great for families and couples.
I Highly recommend.

September Birding

By Chickadeedee51 |

After About three hours of walking a few trails that took me through various habitats I managed to find 15 species. Many of the trails are wide and easy to walk. I parked near the Nature Center and found the washrooms clean and well stocked with TP and paper hand towels. A large sign board showed the trail system and a map of the park.
I encountered a few other visitors, some on bicycles, some fishing, some walking dogs and a few enjoying the water's shoreline, but overall the park did not feel busy.

Great views of the lake.

By orangeman13 |

We went to both parts of the park. One side free and they multiple trails along the lake and a boat launch. We took one trail to the point and a different one back. When you arrive at the point the views of Lake Champlain are unbelievable. After our hike we went over to the beach side which their is a parking fee. They have a nice beach that has lifeguards and nice shower and bathroom facilities. This area also has boat launches and bike trails.

Pretty Place!

By momuskitty |

I was only at the park for a short while to try some fishing but was really impressed with the views and how clean and clear Lake Champlain really is. I was also happy to catch a pickerel and a small bass. There are many different walking trails and I saw signs for the beach which I never made it to. What a great spot only 15 minutes or so outside of Plattsburgh. This is a must go if you're an outdoorsy type.

Waking my dog

We went there in the fall time. looks like a beautiful place for a hiking! they have a small beach as well. Summer time must be the best time around this area.

The only good part was it was free.

By MSVMSV |

I really looked forward to this park but the first trail I tried was very overgrown and I am highly allergic to poision sumac and just past dodging the sumac there was no way not to have grasses brushing against you and with all the tick warnings, so no thanks. Went to the lower trail head and found a much wider trail but poorly maintained. Hard to enjoy nature when you are trying not to trip over roots and rocks. The road to the lower trail is only one car wide and I am very glad I didn't need to back up to a limited bypass area.

Great park for walking!

I love all the hiking trails at this park. You can enjoy several miles of trails along Lake Champlain.

A little time away

By Lisa L |

One of my favorite spots in our area. Great place to spend the day or even if you're short on time and just want to get a little walk in.

Nice for trekking

By France B |

We visited that park and foud it very nice with lots of path to trek. The lake view is near fantastic. It's nice and quiet.

Point ay roche state park

By momlette799 |

Very clean and a nice place to picnic, swim or even launch your boat. Nice beach and play area. Good for families to spend a nice warm day to swim and picnic. Great in winter to walk your dog, ice fish aor even cross country ski. Several hiking trails to choose from easy to moserate difficulty. Beautiful lake setting with plenty of wooded areas.

Naturally beautiful and mostly undeveloped

By kissyourdog |

The park seems to be divided into two sections. A recreation area with swim beach, picnic areas with grills, boat launch, ample parking, and clean restrooms. A wonderful family attraction. There is a fee for entry into this area.
Just down the road is the second entry for the more adventurous. There is no fee for access to this area. Most of the trails start from the large paved parking area. The trails are well maintained and an easy walk. They are all natural which adds to the experience. You can walk inland or by the shores of the lake, but you do have to take very short side steps to really enjoy the view of the lake.
This area must be good for fishing, because of the enthusiastic people we saw with lines in the water. Sun screen is a smart idea along with good bug repellent. Leased pets are allowed in some areas.

Wonderful

Two couples looking to hike and see beautiful views of the lake- this was the place! It's a great place to spend the day, with a beach and volleyball court.

A Place for All Seasons

By SLC816 |

I really enjoy spending time at Point Au Roche State Park. There is something to do all year round, from cross country skiing and snow shoeing in the winter to walking the nature path and observatory year round to spending the day at the beach in the summer. Point Au Roche State Park has a lovely sand beach for sunning and swimming. For the fisherman and boat enthusiast Point Au Roche has access to a paid boat launch and dock system. I grew up on Lake Champlain and Point Au Roche is one of my favorite places to go when out on the lake.

Two entrances either for the beach or for hiking

By ScotiaCantor |

As an added bonus for staying at the Point Au Roche Lodge, one can walk into the park and hike the many trails in the Park. The staffed Nature Center offers a variety of programs open to the public all year. The nature Center offers maps of the trails that can take you through the woods or out to one of the points for a beautiful and relaxing view of Lake Champlain. "The park's trails, including nature, hiking and biking trails, wind through interesting habitats, from forest to marsh to shoreline. The trails are in use all year for school programs, nature hikes and cross-country skiing. The park also provides access for ice fishing". To view the Adirondack Mountains to the west and the Green Mountains of Vermont to east from one of the points on a clear day is nothing less than spectacular.
The park's large day-use area has a protected, sandy beach, picnic facilities and concession stand. The official entrance does charge a nominal to enter with your vehicle.

Great park!

By Sue |

Lots to do there. Bike, swim, picnic. Kids loved it. Water was a bit chilly, but the little ones loved playing on the beach.

Just beautiful

By Dee l |

A nice, quiet park with views that rival the ocean. The hiking trails are not strenuous and lead to an incredible outcropping into the lake.

Swimming, Boating, and hiking

By RealityChuck |

There are two entrances. The main entrance leads to a nice sandy beach, a picnic area, and a playground. Great for a day at the beach. The other entrance leads to some very pretty nature trails, some with a great view of the lake.

nice park

By jankari |

I visited in October when the Fall colors were in full bloom. Since I was there on weekdays daytime, hardly anyone was there! That made it even nicer. They have many trails. There is a huge lake along the park and it makes for a nice walk. All in all, a great place to spend time. Don't forget to go to Lakeside coffee shop in Point au Roche downtown. It is close by.

Nice beach

By smayhew7511 |

Has large covered picnic building for parties, reunions, etc. Lovely view and clean. Guest area allows lots of spreading out. People park their boats out and come in and swim.

Nice scenery

By Sunsetdm |

This beach has such nice scenery all year round. The woods bordered area is quite pleasing around the beach. Very nice location.

Fun for Everyone

By tcwickes |

The park was clean with the exception of the geese poop. That's wildlife for you! The swimming area, with the most attentive lifeguards, was shallow for our youngest swimmers, while the adults enjoyed an open water swim outside the protected lifeguard area. The water was fresh and clean! There was a beach volleyball court, playground and plenty of picnic tables, as well as walking trails for easy hiking. My cousins rented paddle boards elsewhere and used them at the park. Although dogs are not allowed on the beach, there was plenty of room for them to hang out on the open, grassy field.

A nice trail to hike

By Gary N |

This was a nice place to walk in the forest and to walk along the banks of Lake Champlain. The walk is easy and the scenery is great. Make sure to look for fossils along the shoreline. We found brachiopods, ancient clams and fragments of corral. This is truly and outdoor delight.

Great quiet little beach

By Stéphane |

Great place to relax for a day on the beach on lake Champlain. Restrooms and shower available on site.
Huge picnic area with tables.

Wonderful Park

By Hikers5 |

This was a quiet and clean state park with much to do. During our visit to Point Au Roche Lodge and Lake Champlain we hiked, biked, and swam at the park. The main beach is sandy and the location is well spread out so we did not feel crowded in by others. They have picnic areas, grills and a very nice children's playground. We plan to go back soon.

hiking trails are simple and relaxing

By ogremach |

Nice free hiking trails on the back side. You do not have to pay for the parking if you go to the interpretive center just past the beach. Friendly walking trails, well maintained.

Beautiful grounds, clean facilities, and clear water

By Bob W |

Hiking trails, clean clear water at the beach, modern playground, excellent family picnic spot! Highly recommend.

Great walking trails by the lake

By Wouter R |

I don't go to the beach part of the park, instead I go to the second entrance to get to the walking trails. There are mile and miles of trails, along the lake and through the woods. The trails all interconnect and lead back to one of 2 or 3 parking areas so you can't get lost.
I go there most weekends with my dogs. The trails are well maintained and wonderful in all seasons.
It is my favorite place to go for a longer walk, without having to drive far from Plattsburgh or actually climb a mountain.

Nice park to check out

By 63impala |

This park is a nice place to spend some time along the water, have a cookout or walk some of the trails.

GREAT place to walk, relax, enjoy the outdoors

By Emily D |

I love to walk here! Sometimes there is a charge for admission, but at other times of the year this is not the case. Because I walk regularly, this is a great choice, right outside of Plattsburgh. The trails are lovely, many different choices, and the short stroll to the beach through the woods is very pleasant. A small nature center and restrooms are available, and there is also a nice small beach area with grills too. I would highly recommend this place! Bring bug spray however- they can get nasty. Great walk for families with small kids as well as teens, or couples too.

Great place for a not too strenuos walk!

By BarbaraC |

This a beautiful free state park. There are many different trails you can walk. It is on Lake Champlain, so you cannot beat the view! It is not crowded, so it is very peaceful. Don't be confused, there is a different entrance, where you pay, I believe it may be a boat launch.

Nice outing on a beautiful day

By JiggaJerm |

Love Point Au Roche! Especially on clear days. Great place to walk to the dog. Or walk the human! The trail is a nice flat one, and does not require much effort. The back part of the trail goes along the shores of Lake Champlain, and the woods are very well maintained. Please clean up after yourselves, do not litter, and leave this environment exactly how you found it.

Great walking and superb beach

By Lawrence G |

Point Au Roches park is a wonderful place to picnic with the family. The beach is delightful with with beautiful sand and clean water for swimming. The Park has excellent rest and changing rooms that are well kept. With many picnic table available at the park it is a wonderful place for lunch or dinner. Its a beautiful place to walk on trails that wind around the water inlets. The trails have seat along them for just enjoying the outdoors.

Beautiful spot

By EMB |

Gorgeous trails for walking and biking right along the edge of Lake Champlain. Perfect spot for a bright sunny morning.

Great time

By Thomas D |

I have been to this park many times and I love it. The water is beautiful, the trials are beautiful, the views are beautiful, and you can't beat the price to take the family for the entire day. Positive and peaceful atmosphere. Most places you go to lifeguards act like police or silent robots, but at this park they always are friendly, happy, and they whistle while they work. The beach is a bit rocky, and the showers don't work, but other than that this place is ideal. Great place that is always positive and relaxing.

A great place for hiking

By fotobug |

Though there is a day use fee for the beach area, if you park at the nature center and just hike, there is no cost. We were only in the area overnight but walked down to Long Point and back. The trail was very muddy (it's been an unusually wet spring) but we got around the bad parts and enjoyed the walk very much. Loads of wildflowers and birds, beautiful views over Lake Champlain - both NY and Vermont.

The perfect beach and hike

By Kristy K |

A Wonderful place to bring the family - not only can you enjoy a sandy beach, but you can also hike some great trails.

Also a wonderful place to xcountry ski and snowshoe in the winter

Unspoiled walking in all seasons

By David G |

This is a wonderful park with long walking trails near and on the water. Markers along the trails tell of the foliage and it is good in all seasons. There are no facilities to speak of. Bring your own lunch and kids and pets.

Nice place when sailing

This is a very nice stop on Champlain Lake when sailing or even by car. There are moorings for the sailboat. Park is clean and quiet. Nice place to hike, nice view on the lake,

Great place for a low effort hike

By Raymond A |

Easy trails and great lake views combined with few visitors and convenient parking make this a great place for an easy hike with little elevation change. This weekend was perfect, hiked a trail and saw only one other group. Sat on a point with great views and not a soul in sight.
