One of the most beautiful and picturesque places in Maine. A not to miss stop especially for lighthouse viewers. Great vantage points for photo ops. Stunning landscape and lighthousr.

Iconic Maine Lighthouse!

By wvmomtravels |

Just go! An iconic Maine light house with rocks/rocky beach (there’s a small opened gate on path). My 6 yr old enjoyed climbing the rock. I enjoyed watching the waves crash into the rocky shore. Beautiful place!

Beautiful

By Jessica C |

Beautiful, on clear skies and foggy days! The lighthouse itself is cool, and there are lots of paths to walk around and explore.

Post Card Maine

By terrdeter |

There's a reason why it's the most photographed light house - even prettier in person.
We visited numerous times, and still awe inspiring. Climb the rocks for an unobstructed view and picture. It's in ME in a post card.

Great place and views

By jbeaches2014 |

While you couldn’t go up the lighthouse, some great views and even walking on the rocks. Parking was fair. Park near the park which is the first entrance lot as opposed to the higher lots.

beautiful lighthouse

By Jaskel08 |

Beautiful lighthouse. Amazing views. Can see other lighthouses. Very picturesque. It was closed, so we couldn’t go inside. It was situated at Fort Williams Park. The park has a huge green space which is perfect for picnicking, games, etc. Lots to explore. The only cost, which was minimal, was for parking. However, there is plenty of parking. Definitely worth the stop.

Great view

By jk2768 |

Great views of the ocean and beautiful coastline. Was a little difficult to get to, but worth the visit.

Worth the visit.

By toscwolfstar |

Tall rocky cliffs surround this iconic lighthouse with plenty of wave activity,
The parking is a bit of a walk away and the winter sidewalks were very slippery. We just walked on the crunchy but safe snow.
Lots of people abound.

An amazing place

By Amin Rosasio |

Is a magical place no matter what time of the year you are visiting, is a peaceful place where you see the water, the sky and the rocks forces in complete harmony.

Don't miss this lighthouse!

By KathyG1961 |

We visited the lighthouse and found it to be one of the best things we did while in Maine. Enjoyed the grounds, cliffs and everything about it. Just beautiful!

Cool Place

By Bill S |

Very Picturesque Light House a Short Drive from Portland. Definitely worth the visit. They do Charge for Parking and it can be pretty crowded.

Amazing

By SB197001 |

I would recommend going here while in Maine. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes lots of walking. The lighthouse is gorgeous

Portland Head Lighthouse stunning

By Rebecca C |

Great place to take Photos! As soon as you get out of the car the strong scent of the ocean hits you and it smells so good!! We enjoyed walking around the lighthouse and seeing it at every angle. Take a short walk on a trail along the ocean and get great photos of the lighthouse and rocks surrounding it. Make sure you try the Maine Lobster, so good. Very worth the trip, love the Maine coast!

Walking the cliff trail in sunlight and fog

By NHjo |

Never get tired of this place. We walked along the coastal cliff trail just as the fog was rolling in and the sun was still shining in the north and west. Great views, great walk!

only $2!

By Rooindie |

You can't go up, but there is a small and interesting museum (only $2 pp) you can go in.  If you take the trouble to walk up the path along the shore just a short ways you will get a perfect picture of the lighthouse and ragged coast.

Amazing lighthouse

By fefa1986 |

Absolutely amazing place !! I cannot believe someone can leave a bad review !!! Neighborhood is very nice , I am not sure how much it cost to book a hotel near by but I would assume pricy but we had a quick trip from
Portland Maine it only took like 10 min to get there !!! Absolutely love it !!!! Had interesting history as well!

Elopement Spot!!

By Sarah |

This is the PERFECT spot for an elopement or to do a picnic with the kids. We did our private elopement here with just our kids and it turned out amazing!

Portland Headlight is a MUST

By Glenda M |

Award winning Lobster truck and Gorgeous Gelato remove the need for packing a picnic, but it's still OK to do that. And affordable! We walked down the rocks and along the Cliff Walk. The views of this lighthouse and Casco Bay are unbelievable! The little gift shop has a nice selection of affordable memorabilia.

Pleasant day outdoors

By LookingForFamilyFun |

There is a little bit of activity for everyone here if you are there to take advantage of it. There is no admission to the park, but parking cost was $5 for two hours.

The lighthouse museum is open from 10am to 2pm. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for kids. The museum is small but if you like reading there are plenty of unique historical facts to absorb.

For military historians there is the Blair battery bunkers with several panels. Although never used in combat there are some interesting connections. You cannot go to the top of the lighthouse but there is a good overview from the Blair battery.

Plenty of walking trails and if you are a little more adventurous you can climb down to the rocks to the rock beach below the lighthouse. Best pictures were around sunset on a bright sunny August day.

There are several food trucks if you will be staying over eating hours. According to a local the lobster roll from the food truck is one of the best. Bathrooms are limited to portable toilets, so plan accordingly. Small gift shop but only merchandise.

A Must See

By Phil M |

The Portland Head Light is a beautiful lighthouse located just outside of Portland. It’s beautiful and well maintained and located on Fort Williams Park. The views are incredible and you can walk along the shore by Casco Bay.

Portland Head Light

By Tam&Jeff |

What a gray place to spend a couple hours! Beyond the lighthouse, there are remnants of a fort with display boards to inform the visitor, walking trails and access to rocky beaches, and lots of space to have a picnic, fly a kite or play some frisbee, read, whatever. The cliff walk is beautiful. Also, you can walk around the ruins of Goddard Mansion. There is a parking fee.

One of my favorite lighthouses

By traveling_with_kathy |

I never tire of visiting this gorgeous lighthouse and the surrounding property. It’s an iconic image of the state of Maine. It was especially nice with a Christmas wreath on the lighthouse. Fun to visit anytime of the year.

Beautiful!

By Jessica P |

Beautiful! There were a lot of people there but plenty of green space to walk around and spread out. Wildflowers along walking trails were enjoyable. Scenery of the lighthouse, of course, also the rocky coast were great.

Beautiful!

By Krr1975 |

So many beautiful views from here! Lots of places to walk around and take photos of the lighthouse and surrounding area. A must if you’re in the area.

Head light

By Kimberly F |

A trip to head light light house is a wonderful trip for couples and families. You pay to park 6$ for 2 hours, 8$ for 4 hrs and so forth. Admission is free to tour the grounds. The light house is not available for public touring but you are able to tour the grounds that surround it. There is a museum the admission is 2$ for adults, 1$ for children. The grounds include a cliff walk, awesome views of the bay! If you add this it will not disappoint.

Beautiful

By hugasnugglebunny |

We would definitely visit this lighthouse again. Traveler's tip - the bathrooms are not in the buildings. Be sure to visit the porta potty in the parking lot before walking down the path to the museum, lighthouse & gift shop.

Postcard view of Maine

By Amy D-K |

Beautiful views. This is what I envisioned when planning a trip to Maine. There were various spots to get good views of the lighthouse and different paths. They had food vendors the day we visited. Make sure to pay for parking and display your receipt on your dashboard. We paid for parking but did not display our receipt, and we received a parking ticket. Get there early, by 10 people were fighting for parking spots. Also, note that the only bathrooms are porta potties in the parking lot closest to the lighthouse. There are no bathrooms in the museum or the buildings attached to the lighthouse, and the walk to the porta potties is not short in an emergency, so plan ahead.

Stunning in all seasons!

By TXMARTINS |

A beautiful area to get amazing coastal views of Maine, a stunning lighthouse & lots of fun places to roam! The lighthouse is easy to stroll around & has local vendors around the edges with great crafts & photos for sale. Lots of parking available around the lighthouse but it does get busy so go on the earlier side but with enough time to grab a lobster roll by a local vendor just before you get to the lighthouse.

A Must See

By Traveler1959-123 |

A must see! Iconic lighthouse that is so picturesque. You can't visit Maine without stopping here. Also be sure and walk around to the views of the rocky shoreline.

Famous Lighthouse

By Hgtravl |

One of my Maines most iconic & famous lighthouse- Portland Head aka Cape Elizabeth lighthouse is STUNNING! Beautifully maintained park to walk around & explore. They have a large parking lot a few steps away from the lighthouse for a small fee. The park offers stunning cliffs with powerful ocean waves below. Beautiful flowers maintained around the lighthouse buildings. Stunning views of the lighthouse from multiple views. Very peaceful. Beautiful! Stunning! Such an iconic view along the Maine coast.

Instagram worthy

By colleen T |

Stunning views, Instagram worthy. There were incredible rose bushes all around the place. You can get lobster rolls here, so so good. Don't pay for parking, it isn't enforced. There are signs and a machine outside to pay for parking but I was there for an hour and never saw any enforcement of any kind, just little old men directing traffic. This whole place is privately owned

Incredible Setting and Immaculate Lighthouse!

By mforkner |

This was our first stop in Maine. The day was beautiful, and the setting is incredible. I believe this is the most photographed lighthouse (in Maine at least). Once the hills in the park leading to it are crested, it is easy to see why. If you are any kind of lighthouse afficionado and anywhere near, this is an absolute must see! Photogenic to the nth degree. Our only disappointment, both the public portion and the store at foot of lighthouse were closed. The lighthouse is immaculately maintained, and the setting is almost hard to believe it's natural. As others have said photos hardly do it justice. We have seen many, many lighthouses over the years and I can think of none that can match the majesty of this one!

Amazing view!

By ZhuZhu L |

I could stay at this place for hours! The park is very spacious with many other attraction. The light house is so beautiful.

Beautiful lighthouse and coastline views

By BER0416 |

This was the best of three lighthouses we visited in the Portland area. You have to pay for parking but it is plentiful. The grounds around the lighthouse are nice as are the views. They have a small gift shop on site.

so gorgeous

By fozjon |

the most photographed lighthouse in the US is amazing. So beautiful and the surrounding historic park is definitely worth exploring. We had a beautiful day.

Beautiful spot to visit

By Aaron Ross |

The lighthouse is cool to see (you can't enter) and there are some shops right around it. There are also some large coastal rocks that you can walk across beyond the landlines to get a better feel for the ocean. They are not too hard to navigate and were a lot of fun. This is part of a larger park and when we were there it looked like they were setting up for a concert or festival, so probably a good idea to see what is going on when you visit.

Up, close & personal with a lighthouse

By Yungmarie |

This was easily accessible. Beautiful, panoramic views. Very blissful and peaceful here. Not much crowds and for the most part everyone gave each other a turn at taking photos with or of the lighthouse.
Folks were very friendly, both visitors and locals alike. First time I have ever been up close and personal with a lighthouse.
There is paid, metered parking and I think it was $4 per hour. It was very beautiful here with also a bit of history alongside the lighthouse.

Beautiful Landmark Lighthouse

By EasternCanada |

This lighthouse is majestic, overlooking the ocean. The site is just amazing: views, waves, rocks, park, bay, etc. It's probably one of the most photographed places in the USA. Visiting the lighthouse is a such an experience everytime! The history and natural beauty of the area are breathtaking!

Good stop at the State's oldest Lighthouse.

By Ted R |

On our 48 State trip we only have about 1-2 days per State. The Portland Head Light is a great Historical stop.
Portland Head Light was built in 1791. Commissioned by George Washington and dedicated by the Marquis de Lafayette, it is the state's oldest lighthouse.

Great visit while staying in Kennebunk.

By Roy P |

My wife and I knew we had to go see the iconic Maine lighthouse. It did not disappoint. You cannot go inside the lighthouse or the home there unfortunately. However, I understand why. The view from where the lighthouse stands and the surrounding cliffs, makes you understand why it was put there in the first place. The view is spectacular watching the waves crash on the rocks. I am very glad we went and it is worth the visit.

A wonderful place to relax and take in some quality sights

By cstupack |

This was beautiful and seems other traveler's reviews have the same photos - all postcard-perfect!

I lost my grandmother last week so sat on a bench overlooking the ocean and just let my mind wander....

This was such a nice place to just relax, walk around and be at peace.

Wonderfully preserved with no litter in sight.

don't miss this in Portland

By JenniferandAlan |

This is the oldest lighthouse in Maine and probably one of the most photographed. The lighthouse itself is beautifully painted and the rugged coast is stunning. Although it draws many people in the summer, watching the ocean is peaceful There is a nice parking lot and a gift shop. There are also the ruins of Fort Williams to explore. Take your time here and take it all in. My husband and I have visited many times and never tire of it--a great experience every time.

Wonderful area to visit and explore

By crowebird |

Lighthouse is beautiful. Park is lovely. One can easily spend a few hours just relaxing by the water and strolling around the grounds.

Beautiful! Must See!

By Sarah B |

We were in town for about 24 hours and this was on our must see list! It was unseasonably cool the day we visited but it was worth it! It is breath taking views of the light house and awesome rock formations along the shoreline. It's free to get into the park and the museum charges a small fee.

Breathtaking views

By Shira K |

This lighthouse is breathtaking, and it is no wonder that it is the most photographed lighthouse in the world. Even if you're not a professional photographer, you can get some really stunning shots.
I stopped here on my way back to Boston from Acadia National Park. Thankfully, we made it just a few minutes before the rain started.
The park itself is free, parking is $7/hour.
I recommend visiting this lighthouse if you're in the Portland, Maine, area.

Portland Head Lighthouse visit is great!

By Sandy Byrum S |

The Portland Head Light was perfect for walking, getting steps, and taking pictures. The weather was perfect, and the pictures were very numerous. The city owns the park of Fort Williams. There is no admission, but one does pay for parking $5.00 for 2 hours, etc. There are 4 parking lots, lots of paths, and grass to get to the views. I saw no flush toilets but there were a lot of Port-a-johns. We saw 2 food trucks but didn't buy food. We had a picnic. There are picnic areas everywhere. Whatever trash you take into the park, you need to take out of the park. There was a museum right at the Lighthouse. It cost a few dollars and was so crowded one couldn't really get in the door. Under those circumstances, we stayed outside and took lots of pictures from numerous advantage points. I bought a tiny snow globe at the gift shop. I noticed the same snow globe cost more than twice as much at the airport when we left the next day. The lighthouse is on the furthestmost point of land or the Portland Head. Then they make the title shorter by calling it the Portland Head Light, leaving off the "house" of lighthouse.

Beautiful!

By Dean P |

This is my second time visiting and again it did not disappoint, one of the most beautiful places to visit in my opinion! I LOVE MAINE

Worth the detour

By Helen A |

We spent a week in NH/Acadia and were on our way to catch a plane in Boston-we had some time but wondered if it would be worth it to stop by Portland Head Light. It totally was-I expected it to have a very touristy feel but it’s located in a beautiful park area with lots of green space. You can walk out on rocks right up to the water for a great view. We were there maybe 45 minutes -didn’t go into the museum-but it was a nice place to say goodbye to the rocky coast before returning to NC.

Gorgeous. Beautiful. Stunning.

By surfercharlie |

My wife and I drove up from our vacation rental on Cape Cod to Portland, Maine for two reasons: so she could try real Maine Lobster and so we could see as many lighthouses on our day road trip as possible. We were not disappointed in the Portland Head Light. We have obviously seen this magnificent lighthouse in pictures, as it is one of the most photographed lighthouses in all of the United States. But in person, it is stunning. Not just the lighthouse. The entire landscape and views. Oh My Goodness. This lighthouse is beautiful as well as the setting. The best stop we made in Maine!

Must see

By bushes5 |

Spectacular views. It was very windy the day we visited with huge waves breaking on the rocks. So many places to take great photos. Take the cliff walk as far as you like to really see some good views. Explore the Fort remains for some interesting history. The Italian coffee truck on the property was excellent and hot drinks were welcome. Worth a few hours stop.

Old but still beautiful

By lovetravel2 |

This is the oldest headlight in the state of Maine. The views of the cliffs, water, and the area is absolutely a must visit. The sights and sounds are breathtaking.

Iconic Lighthouse

By Michael W |

The Portland Head Light Lighthouse is a must see if you are in the Portland area. One of the most beautiful lighthouses that you should see.

Don’t miss!

By Lindsayyy412 |

My photos look like a post card! You can’t go inside just outside to take photos. Gorgeous Maine scene. Don’t take your photos from right below take them from afar by the other areas, to get a good shot of the whole lighthouse, the water, rocks etc

Gorgeous

By yalibrarian |

Beautiful view just 20 minutes from the airport. I love lighthouses, and although the on-site museum and gift shop were closed, it was still worth the stop. Many photo ops from all different angles, and several easy paved trails to hike and discover more views. Great open areas for picnics plus several food trucks (lobster rolls, gelato, etc.) and vendors selling sea glass jewelry and ocean prints. Paid credit card parking. Kettle Cove, Crescent Beach State Park, and the Lobster Shack at Two Lights (yum!!) are very close by.

Iconic light house with stunning views!

By Shirley S |

We visited on a fairly crowded day, so we didn't go into the museum. This lighthouse is in Fort Williams Park and is the oldest lighthouse in Maine; worth a stop to simply see the scenery!

The surf was very active when we visited, periodic dramatic splashes added to our pictures.

The bathrooms were porta potties; no thanks!

Beautiful lighthouse

By Debbra P |

While you can’t actually enter the lighthouse because it is in use by the coast guard, there is a museum and gift shop on the property. The waves were very high and crashing against the rocky shoreline creating a beautiful ocean spray.

Stunning!

By Christina |

Portland Head Lighthouse is stunning and not to be missed! The lighthouse is inside a public park that charges to park and depending on where you park, you could experience a bit of a walk. Food trucks are available but check for hours of operation. Picnic tables are also available so bringing your own meal could be great. The space is wide open a can be windy. The lighthouse is very popular so brave for crowds. Dogs are allowed on leash.

The lighthouse itself has been very well maintained considering its age and its exposure to the elements. Be sure to explore the property from as many angles as you can. It is truly spectacular!

Nice lighthouse and park

By Love to go places |

It was a nice place to visit. Our flight was delayed so we didn't get there until after the lighthouse was closed, would have loved to see it. The security guards started telling people to leave 20 minutes before closing, made the last 20 minutes of our visit rushed. Next time we will plan to make a day of it and walk the trails and bring a picnic lunch.

Beautiful Lighthouse

By Emily D |

It’s such a beautiful place. The Cliff walks are easy to walk and such an amazing view. Recommend for any visitors. We went when it was super foggy and it just made it even prettier!

Returning after 50 years away

By Champlainer |

Visiting Portland Head Lighthouse and Fort Williams after a 50 year absence. I had lived in Cape Elizabeth in the 1960s. Every thing has changed except this iconic spot. Just beautiful!

Absolutely beautiful lighthouse!

By Sonja M |

Beautiful lighthouse! This was definitely the most beautiful lighthouse we saw on our trip to Maine. There are paths on each side to walk around and get pictures from different angles. It’s beautiful and different from each side! Note: our only disappointment was that when we visited (July, 2022) the museum and shop were only open until 2 pm. We didn’t know that before we went and they had just closed when we got there, so check the hours before you go if you want to visit those things.

Lighthouse views

By Debra M |

The views around the lighthouse were beautiful. Worth the visit just to see the surrounding areas. Great spot for taking pictures.

Good, but come prepared

By Ken L |

Nice park with good shoreline path. Lighthouse is beautiful, but not accessible. Limited dining options in the park or in the area. No restrooms or trash cans in the park.

Easily accessible

By NCtravelz |

This is a very pretty lighthouse that is easily accessible from the parking lot. You have to pay for parking and the lots were filling up by the time we left around 1pm. There were a few food trucks and carts. There are some paths for different views of the lighthouse and you can keep walking around the fort.

Portland Must See

By RollTideRollAZ |

Beautiful lighthouse and plenty of spots to walk the property and park, Some ruijns along the grounds and you can even go to a small beach area, Some food truck like food available from some local vendors. Beautiful photography!

Beauty of Maine

By paso56 |

This is quintessential Maine! The park and the lighthouse are in a picture perfect setting! I was surprised how many people were out and about in the frigid weather! Definitely a must see spot.

Beautiful place!

By Katie Ray |

Definitely do not miss this. The park has a lot of features to discover. The views of the lighthouse and cliff lines are indescribable. This is a MUST SEE.

The highlight of my trip!

By Marie F |

Amazing!!! Absolutely beautiful! Iconic Maine, at least as I dreamed it to be. The lighthouse, the quaint building, the cliffs, the rock formations, the crashing waves, the view - all so picturesque! A must see for a trip to Portland in my opinion!

One of our favorite places on the map

By Travapress.com |

Here at Travapress.com, we have members who have been to this location many times due to the sheer beauty of the morning fog alone. Lighthouse, close to excellent seafood, what else does one need?

Iconic

By iamstoked22 |

This is the mist photographed and viewed lighthouse in the US, justifiably so. If you were to look ip lighthouse in the dictionary, this is what you would see.

It is an iconic light that actually is still used. We spent about 20 minutes there. Due to COVID-19 there was no interior access allowed, but the exterior is beautiful with great downtown and sea views.

A Must See

By Lynette58 |

The Portland Head Light is definitely a must see when visiting Portland. It is a beautiful picturesque lighthouse. The views are magnificent. There are nice pathways to walk along the coastline. Not to be missed!

Eh.

By Dan |

In my opinion not worth the trip. Yes, it is a picturesque lighthouse. Yes, it overlooks a beautiful view. I just don’t believe it’s worth the parking fees and overcrowded vantage points.

Foggy lighthouse!

By Wanda J |

Wished weather was more cooperative. It was misty and foggy so we couldn't see too far out. But seeing lighthouse and getting pictures was cool

Stunning

By 3UVAfans |

Perfect! This was the most perfect stop. We enjoyed our lobster roll from The Lobster Shack while listening the enchanting seaside waves. Don't miss it!

Pretty

By Josh |

Lighthouse is pretty, I wish you could go down on the rocks like in Acadia National park. Send ridiculous you have to pay to park here, it’s expensive rates too

Beautiful!

By Susan D |

If you are in Maine and are short on time and want to visit a lighthouse, go here. The views are beautiful. The lighthouse has a museum and gift shop and the ocean views are great too.

Incredible place! Highly recommend!

By Lady Gigglemug |

Said to be the inspiration for Longfellow’s poem The Lighthouse! I can see why, to be sure! A fantastic example of a Victorian lighthouse...and the keepers house was adorable and quaint as well. Shame it wasn’t open! Supposedly the keepers were friends of Longfellow!

I caught the lighthouse on a gloriously sunny, breezy and cool New England day! The island was peaceful yet buzzing with a few tourists, the water calm and crystal clear blue, the breeze perfect in strength and temperature! Made for a lovely little hike around the grounds!

It’s easy to find. There’s plenty of parking but you have to pay - I found out as I was leaving...the tiny little “pay station” is obscure and poorly marked so be aware. I didn’t see any widespread signs either so had no idea.

So many little trails and nooks and crannys to explore! I could’ve happily stayed all day! There was even a Mainer man in the parking lot selling his artwork!

Lots of great areas for photos...from all angles. I also stumbled upon a gelato stand and some other little buildings - closed for the season - but this would be idyllic in summer time, no doubt! Must revisit!

Beautiful light house

By Tina Chiu |

Probably one of the most picturesque light house I’ve ever seen! We went in winter and was freezing so didn’t get to stay long, but it was worth the trip!

fabulous site

By Napsterthecat |

Stunning view. Seeing such a structure is fantastic. It's worth seeing at least once. Very relaxing to see such a fabulous site.

Amazing Light House

By benton2569 |

Such a beautiful light house in a scenic state park (free to enter) just 12 minutes from downtown Portland. You can view this light house from many different vantage points and even get right up close. There are hiking trails, picnic areas, a small water / ocean front area (a sign read "swim at your own risk" so take that for what it is worth) and several abandoned fortifications on the property that you can explore. Great for families, ample parking too.

Lovely experience, would come back again

By Rashae Williams |

We loved our experience here! Parking was cheap, we walked around right up to the lighthouse and the other views and spots were so pretty and perfect. History and plaques were interesting, and we got dinner at Bite into Maine food truck right across the street. Beautiful place and could have stayed longer just sitting and listening to the ocean, enjoying the view.

Great for pictures!

By Sdjtravels |

We visited in August during a one night stop to catch a plane. It was rainy but still a nice stop with some beautiful photographs. We enjoyed shrimp tacos and clam chowder from a good truck while there. Had it not been raining we would have stayed longer. Definitely worth going to.

Maines Oldest Lighthouse

By trophywest |

If you only see one lighthouse, this is the one. The most photographed lighthouse in the US. It is Maine's oldest lighthouse & built when Washington was President.

Gorgeous lighthouse & views

By Jennifer P |

A gorgeous lighthouse to visit! The views from the trail were beautiful! Wish we had been able to stop on a day that the First Lady - the security was high and there were restrictions. But - we still loved the lighthouse & the views! I was able to get some pictures with the Coast Guard patrolling the waters by the light which was a plus.

Picturesque Headlight

By Solutions123 |

The neighborhood into the park is a sight. The park has a lot to offer. It’s great for families, couples or individuals. The Headlight is so picturesque as she faces the ocean. Don’t forget to get a lobster roll at Bite into Maine. It’s a food truck but they have one of the best lobster rolls in town.

Who doesn't love a historic picturesque Lighthouse.

By Roberts69 |

Visited Portland Head Lighthouse in Feb 2020 when there was snow all around so we had the Fort Williams Park and the lighthouse all to ourselves. This really is a very picturesque lighthouse and it is also the oldest lighthouse in Maine. Construction began in 1787 at the directive of George Washington, and was completed on 10th January 1791. In those days whale oil lamps were used for illumination. Today the light station is automated, and the tower, beacon, and foghorn are maintained by the US Coast Guard. The former lighthouse keepers' house is a maritime museum but this was not open when we were there. This historic lighthouse is definitely worth a visit and looked particularly beautiful in the snow, even if rather cold.

Beautiful lighthouse

By Becky H |

I love lighthouses, so this was a must-see for me on our road trip. This is a beautiful lighthouse in a very scenic area. While there, we met the author of a book about the area lighthouses. He was very nice, and even signed my book for me.

Whole family was awestruck! (Even the teenager!)

By BrokenDDL |

Our first big pitstop as we headed toward Acadia NP and this did not disappoint as an introduction to Maine and the coast. Picture perfect weather in the late afternoon on a mid-October Thursday, with the waves crashing and sea roaring and the constancy of the tumult. Plus we rock-hopped a little bit (in the safe area) and the kids tried rock-stacking the palm-sized pieces to leave their own monument to the beauty of it all.

One of my favorite places on earth!

By laurabraz |

I’ve been fortune enough to visit this beautiful places twice once in the October sunshine and once in the cold fog of December. The lighthouse is absolutely stunning no matter the weather...the fog yesterday made for some great pictures and the stormy ocean churned up some spectacular waves. We could have watched the powerful ocean all day! The rocks surrounding the lighthouse are also very striking. If you’re only going to do one thing in Portland, do this!!!

Beautiful Light House

By Laurence M |

Portland Head light house is beautiful from several directions with the beautiful waves crashing on the cliffs and large rocks. There small one mile trails on the cliff area. This is a must visit when the area.

A must see Maine Lighthouse!

By Kari R |

This lighthouse is a must see if in the Portland area! The grounds are gorgeous and highly recommend taking the short walking trails on either side so come wonderful views of the keeper’s house and light.

We did not go in the little museum as you could not go up into the light.

Free parking onsite too!

If you have time, stop for lunch at the food truck - Bite into Maine - in the parking lot. Worth it!

Gorgeous must see

By JJR |

Gorgeous in every way. Beautiful area to picnic. Must see. Great for sunrise. Large areas for children to play.

Must see!

By Tarember |

The most picturesque lighthouse. You could explore for hours. Also recommend visiting with the local artists there selling their works. Bring a camera and enjoy the views.

gorgeous - even on a frigid February afternoon!

By Sara T |

Lighthouse is within the easy-to-find Fort Williams Park. There is ample parking at a few different locations and the cliff walk offers varying views of the lighthouse. It is spectacular! It was a FREEZING February afternoon when I stopped, so my visit was perhaps half hour at the most but it was still a highlight!

A Day Well Spent!

By Jane Freund |

Amazing park! They have a great off-leash dog area as well as kids playground in the back. Beautiful views throughout and you can easily spend an afternoon there. There are port-a-potties and in summer one lobster food truck ($$$) and gelato truck.

Add this to your sightseeing list!

By Bay |

A beautiful sunset stop! Perfect for a picnic, taking pictures, and watching the water up on the cliffs or from the beach below. The park property caters to all types of travelers by offering a close-up view of the house, open fields, cliffs with trails down to the water, sport courts, food trucks and more. It’s dog friendly too! The lighthouse encapsulates east coast culture and is a must see!

Absolutely gorgeous

By siddy666 |

Visited after a long time; really happy to report the experience was pleasurable.

Pros:
Good amount of parking (with a reasonable charge); including the possibility to drop handicapped folks right in front of the lighthouse
Inexpensive museum and gift shop located on premises
So many opportunities for taking pictures

Cons:
Can get quite busy; I guess that's a good thing :)
A slight shame that you can't climb the tower

Definitely check out the Head Light when visiting Maine; a must do!

Breathtaking lighthouse

By Jen Hamerlinck |

The oldest lighthouse in Maine is by far the most beautiful. It has been kept in pristine condition. The lighthouse, living quarters (which is now a museum), rocky shoreline and grassy wildflowers gives you the best photo opp. It is the most beautiful lighthouse I've ever seen. It is free, except $2/hour to park. We were there about an hour and a half. They also have a nice little gift shop, reasonably priced and nice quality.

Outstanding place any time of year.

By NHjo |

We're so fortunate to live within a short driving distance of this scenic place. We walked the seaside trail on one of the first warm days of early spring, and it was great. Quiet, not too many people. That'll change in a few weeks!

Spectacular View!

By DogLovers1930 |

This area is a must see anytime of year. Beautiful ocean and rocks… coastal Maine on display. In season, great clam shack at this location too.

Must see!

By Sara T |

You can’t go in the lighthouse but there is still lots to do! We walked all around - great views! We walked on the rocks and collected some. It was a rainy day when we went, otherwise, would be a nice place to have a picnic! Besides, this is the oldest lighthouse in Maine!

Beautiful place and amazing views!

By jbrenz |

What a beautiful place! Not only was the lighthouse beautiful, but the grounds, the Cliff walk, and the whole park was just gorgeous. The only complaint I had was there were no garbage cans around. While I carried my garbage with me, not having garbage cans was almost asking people to litter. I understand garbage cans are ugly, but to keep a beautiful park clean, at least add a couple of garbage cans.

Breathtaking

By Sharon A |

So much beauty! Went on a bright, pleasant August morning, the view was spectacular. The little museum is interesting too. And lovely flowers.

Breathtaking!

By Joyce D |

Most beautiful area & lighthouse! Perfect location for many pictures! Such serenity! Worth the drive! Out of all the lighthouses we visited in Maine, this was our favorite!

Beautiful

By toniadcock1 |

A beautiful setting - and lots of folks enjoying a nice walk around the light. There is a large parking area about a block up the hill from the light - and perhaps 3 handicap spaces down near the light itself. This is a great stop on your way to/from Portland!

Idyllic Maine seashore view

By Andrew L |

Came in the winter months, no fee for parking but it was cold. Gave a feel for those who manned these lighthouses years ago. Not much here but what is, is well done. I wouldn't make a special trip, but in the area, you might as well stop by.

Most beautiful Lighthouse!

By JEN S |

Definitely worth the stop. This lighthouse is so beautiful. Loved that we could get right up to it and see it up close.

Must See

By George B |

When you travel about one of Maine s most cosmopolitan towns Portland, you will miss the the true heritage of Maine and its history of the nautical roots if you do not stop by this lighthouse. It is a short detour from Portland and well worth the few extra miles.

So Beautiful - Maine's Most Photographed Lighthouse

By BlueHero |

Well recognized as the most photographed lighthouse in Maine, Portland Head is a must stop if one is in the area. Under sunny skies, it is so beautiful.

Spectacular visit with scenic views

By Neen813 |

Vast park with beautiful, scenic views and plenty of room for families and visitors to spread out. Very clean, and parking was decent (we went on a Friday morning before a holiday weekend, so I don't know how it is at other times). Port-a-potties on site that seemed maintained. There were various food trucks there and a few artisans selling their crafts. Picnic table spread about and even a few grills on premises. I highly recommend visiting and would definitely go again.

Beautiful Lighthouse on Rocky Shores

By Mixa's Travels |

Our Silver Shadow Shore Excursion was Portland Highlights. When we arrived at the starting point for our bus tour of Portland, Maine, we noticed several “Florida Tour” buses. Once on the bus our tour guide, Bob, introduced himself and the driver Ty. He explained that Ty just came in from Florida, had a great safety record of driving a bus but had never driven in Portland. Plus Bob, shared that he was 91 years old. He bragged about the healthy climate and more of Portland. It was a very good bus tour with only a couple of missed turns. Bob knows the area and has great stories about the various places we drove past. The bus ride took us to several areas of the city, so we could both understand its history, its culture and its growth. The primary stop was the Portland Head Light. A beautiful lighthouse with a stone exterior on the rocky bluffs with a museum and adjacent to the remains of Fort William. We took time to walk over to the house adjacent to the lighthouse to take in the views. There was a museum there but we didn’t visit it. We took some great photos of the Portland Head Lamp, an old lighthouse on an island behind it, and the scenic area there. Then we viewed the storyboards about Fort William. Additionally, the area here is very nice for walking and enjoying the parklike atmosphere.

Loved it!

By rsdoze |

This is the first lighthouse I had ever seen up close. I loved it. It's a very nice park that feels very safe with so many families there. There's also a civil war site that uses the same parking lot. The lobster rolls were amazing. Make sure you use the bathroom before you get there. They don't clean the portapotties very often. That's the only negative I have to say about it. Otherwise, it's an amazing history lesson waiting to happen.

Gorgeous ocean views all around!

By Moonmoon Ghosh |

Located in Fort Williams Park, the oldest lighthouse in Maine is an imposing sight, both from a distance and at an arm's length. The views all around are gorgeous, especially the trail on the left of the lighthouse that snakes its way along the coast. Miles and miles of unending ocean and clear blue sky are a treat for eyes. It was bright blue with white clouds in the sky when we arrived in April, but had turned grey in a few hours -- so we got to enjoy the location in all its glory. There are a few other sites around the park that one can visit -- Battery Keyes and Battery Blair, Goddard Mansion as well as a little pebbly beach. If you like to walk around, 90 minutes will be enough time to explore the park and everything it has to offer.

Beautiful to see!

By ladonya2016 |

This was a nice experience with beautiful scenery. We spent about 2 hours there. Good to know: There is a cost to park, at least where we parked ($4), and it is some walking to get to the actual light house. There are food trucks on site- both at the top and near the lighthouse, including geloto, coffee, lobster rolls, etc. Some picnic tables spread throughout area to stop and eat with views. Little trails around the area. You cannot get into the actual lighthouse or house and there is little signage- so if you are a history buff- do your reading before you go.
Very enjoyable! Whoopie pies are wonderful!

Beautiful but needs state attention

By bocajohn |

Loved the lighthouse and it's history. Locale was beautiful and seeing entrance to Portland Harbor in high winds after Hurricane Ida showed how vital navigation can be.
But, come on Maine, the lighthouse is rotting away, no trash containers, picnic areas taped off - what is up? Stop paying so much to appointed officials and put some money back into the park. Or ask for donations that go 100% to park. With over 1 million visitors per year you could get good $$.
Still, go visit. Still working light house that is needed.

Lighthouse is beautiful! Go see it!

By Lovetotravel9997 |

First lighthouse we went to and we were not disappointed. The whole area is super clean and beautiful to be at. We even had our first lobster roll at the little food truck up on the hill, it was amazing tasting! Crazy prices for a lobster roll but the same as all other places, so good deal I guess!
You don't need a tour bus, easy drive to it.

All this and gelato too.

By NHjo |

We were in S. Portland and stopped to see the lighthouse. It was just before Labor Day Weekend and there were still quite a few tourists. The Gorgeous Gelato and the Kettle Cove food trucks that are near the lighthouse were very popular. There were great views of Casco Bay, the islands, several boats, and the lighthouse itself.

Lighthouse you can get close to

By csb14 |

You will be able to get great shots of this lighthouse. You can walk right up to it. Nice park around it.

A must-see spot when in the area

By Mary B |

Breathtaking spot that’s kept up well in a beautiful park. The little shop is a nice touch and has several nice items for sale. We didn’t have a ton of time to explore but we enjoyed walking the different paths and getting different views of the lighthouse. Most were easy enough for a young child.

Beautiful spot without much walking

By Happy Traveler |

Great views of harbor and Atlantic Ocean. The Taste of MAINE food truck is overpriced; but, the location is what you pay for if you eat a lobster roll there. The lighthouse is worth seeing.

Portland Head Light

By Jeffrey J |

Wow! Really great spot. We went on a cool, sunny Sunday late morning in late September. Great scenic views, nice cliff walk along the ocean. Incredibly picturesque. You pay for parking but it is a minimal charge. Really a great spot.

A Must Visit

By ITRT |

It’s easy to see why Maine’s oldest lighthouse is the most photographed lighthouse. The lighthouse is owned by the town of Cape Elizabeth and is adjacent to Fort Williams Park. George Washington commissioned the lighthouse in 1787 and is only open for visitors one day a year during Maine Lighthouse Day in September. A small museum displaying artifacts, Fresnel lenses, photographs etc. is in the keeper’s house and there is a small admission charge. On the grounds, a plaque pays tribute to Wadsworth and his poem “The Lighthouse”. Wadsworth frequently visited Portland Head. An original fog bell used in the lighthouse is also displayed. Waves crashing over the unique rock formations that look like petrified wood add to the beauty and awesome scenery of Portland Head Light. Friendly and great customer service.

A must visit and worth the drive!

By Haifa H |

Beautiful well maintained park. A must visit any time of year. Exactly what I imagined it to be! The sights and sounds of the fog horn and the smell of the ocean were unforgettable.

The oldest lighthouse in Maine

By Bea |

Really spectacular. Amazing lighthouse and breath-taking ocean views. Portland Head Light at a Cape Elizabeth was built in 1791 and it was commissioned by George Washington. It is the oldest lighthouse in Maine.

Iconic

By Zosia B |

A visit to Portland Head Light is a must when visiting Portland. The location is stunning and you can spend several hours exploring the lighthouse and surrounding green spaces. Truly one of the prettiest places around.

Must see!

By Christy |

Lovely site!

I have always loved lighthouses and this one is spectacular. Easy access and lots of area to take photos. Scenery is so beautiful- crowds were light and many folks were very interested to meet our dog who was traveling with us!

Best lighthouse in the world

By WayneDaniels |

This lighthouse is truly beautiful and the view changes with tide & weather. It epitomizes the rock-bound coast of Maine.

Great views be sure and spend the two bucks for the museum. Parking is paid $2 an hour. Overall lots of history and great ocean views.

Perfect Day @ Portland Head Light

By SwonQonDoi |

We wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and liberate ourselves in the refreshing breeze and serene blue sea, so we headed to Maine for our holiday.

There's always something special about visiting beautiful states like Maine, and our destination was Portland. It was truly charming and picturesque. We allowed ourselves to break free from the demands of daily life and let the soothing sea calm our minds. It was incredibly peaceful.

One highlight we highly recommend is Portland Head Light. As the oldest lighthouse in Maine, it offers breathtaking views from every angle. Picture a pristine white lighthouse standing tall against the backdrop of the blue sky and sea – it's an unforgettable sight.

Nearby, you'll find food trucks where you can grab delicious food, drinks, and ice cream to make your day here in Portland even better.

Beautiful views, stunning

By Dawn C |

This was by far the prettiest lighthouse we went to see. They say it's the most photographed lighthouse in the country, and it's easy to see why. We spent about 30-40 minutes here. There's a small museum inside, and lots of great angles for pictures.

Most beautiful lighthouse

By USASUN |

Since we had our accommodation in South Portland, we naturally wanted this
beautiful lighthouse visit. This was one of the most beautiful we had
had seen, even the location on this coast is wonderful. There was a
small museum to visit at a small price. We found it very informative,
There was also information about the history of shipping in Portland.
This lighthouse is frequently visited. A visit at off-peak times is safe
more pleasant. Enjoy this wonderful place by the wild sea.

Neat Lighthouse

By Darren L |

We always enjoy seeing lighthouses and this was in a very picturesque location. You can get right up to the lighthouse and the keepers house is a small museum. There is a gift shop as well. You cannot go up into the lighthouse.

Disappointed that we couldn't go inside

By mdw50 |

Very historic and well preserved setting. extremely picturesque. Wish we could have seen the inside tho, but the only cost was the cost to park the car.

Must See

By Michele P |

One of my favorite light houses...so picturesque...plenty of places to walk around and enjoy a picnic in the adjacent park...plus the most delicious lobster rolls from a food truck in the parking lot. A great place to spend an hour or two.

Historic lighthouse in expansive park

By Shanelle |

Historic lighthouse located in a huge park with walking trails. There were three spots right by the lighthouse that were free parking, while the other lots were paid parking (via a parking app). Came here on a Wednesday and it was raining so there weren’t too many other people there. The museum wasn’t open when we went, but it was still cool to see the lighthouse from various angles. It’s a very picturesque spot.

If you walk along the trail (compact dirt track), you’ll come across a mansion as well as another area where you could picnic. There were also portapotties by the picnic area. The beach is rocky so wear comfy shoes if you’re planning on talking a stroll. There are benches along the trail if you want to sit and have a main character moment.

Overall, a great sight for first-timers and tourists.

Beautiful views and a great place for pictures

By Gulf Coast T |

Portland Head Lighthouse 9-11-25
This lighthouse is located within Fort Wiliams Park. We did a picnic in the park with the view of the Lighthouse in the background. It’s a beautiful park with walking areas, plenty of parking and Picnic tables at various locations. This entire area is beautiful with great views. The lighthouse is in very nice shape, and they have a little museum at the bottom of it and a gift beside that. The museum cost a couple bucks to go through but it’s well worth it. You can’t get inside this Lighthouse, but you can get plenty of pictures. The Lighthouse was built in 1791 making it the oldest Lighthouse in Maine. It was commissioned by George Washinton himself. This Lighthouse even has a Foghorn that boaters can Radio activate remotely (MRASS). The light still is lit to this day. This Lighthouse is 80 feet tall and 101 feet above the water. This is a must-see Lighthouse if you’re in the area you won’t be sorry. I must give this Lighthouse 5 out of 5 stars.

Beautiful Lighthouse

By Jamie Wagnon |

Gorgeous scenery and a beautiful lighthouse. The fall colors were amazing and the waves washing up on the rocks were breath taking.

Beautiful lighthouse

By TravelKat21 |

So glad we stopped here to visit the lighthouse and the forts. This is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the country for a reason. It was worth the small parking fee.

Iconic lighthouse

By Deb |

Beautiful lighthouse. Can walk up to it but not tour inside. Perfect for iconic picture of a Maine lighthouse. It is close to a beautiful park as well. Worth a visit.

A Fascinating Journey Back in Time

By Junaid |

A Light House built in 1791 with a very rich and fascinating history. Still maintained in immaculate condition with a small museum house in the building next to it. The first lens that was used is over 7 feet tall and is on display along with the later, more advance ones that would enhance the illumination from the light source multiple times. Fascinating is the word that comes to mind. A must see on a visit to Maine.

Devastatingly Beautiful

By Cryptic_Tourist |

So glad we made the stop. The park itself is very nice but the main attraction is the light house. Photos do not do it justice. You really should see it for yourself. Parking is not free, you feed a meter and then you take a short walk up to the lighthouse. I would set aside about an hour for this activity.

Gorgeous lighthouse

By LovesPhotoOps |

The lighthouse is inside Fort Williams State Park and we paid $5 to park in their lot. The only restrooms were some portable toilets in the parking lot. The lighthouse itself is gorgeous and you can walk on the sidewalks or on the rocks below to get great views of it. Using binoculars you can also see Fort Gorges and the Spring Point Ledge Light to the north, and the two Cape Elizabeth lights to the south. The museum is well worth the $2 admission (pay in the small gift shop) to learn all about the history of this particular lighthouse. Walk around to the south side of the lighthouse to see where an old shipwreck has been marked on the rocks. You may also want to take a look at the ruins of Goddard Mansion and the Ship Cove beach in the park.

Beautiful views!

By staceykrueger |

If you are in the area, you HAVE to put this stop on your list. There are gorgeous views that will take your breath away!

One of the Jewels of the Entire Maine Coastline

By Jeff S |

This 101-foot (30.8 m) tall lighthouse (built 1790) in Cape Elizabeth’s Williams Park is one of the Portland area’s leading attractions. The town’s new credit-card-only fee machines were all removed, meaning parking was free in the off-season. Parking was in any of several paved lots. Despite being low season, this lighthouse and town park still attracted throngs of out of state visitors. A paved trail afforded views from the shoreline to the north. The lighthouse and its keeper’s house appeared to be in excellent shape. The views were just as scenic as ever, despite autumn’s leaf-falls. We liked everything that we found here and disliked nothing.

Bucket List Lighthouse!

By Carrie D. |

I'm a huge lighthouse lover--I seek them out on my travels all over the world. I love the history and how unique each one is. Portland Head Light has been on my bucket list for quite some time and she did not disappoint. It was a beautiful sunny day when I visited (incredibly hot though!). The lighthouse was so beautiful and it was everything I had hoped it would be. I spent an hour or so walking around the property, enjoying views from both sides along the cliff walk. The rocky shoreline around the lighthouse is exactly what I've always pictured the Maine coast looking like.

I was a bit disappointed that the gift shop was closed, since it was still afternoon. I was also a bit surprised that they charge for parking ($5 for the 2 hours minimum)--and they were walking around ticketing, so that's for real. But they did have food trucks (including an ice cream truck), although the lines were quite long.

Simply stunning

By Angela L |

INCREDIBLE VIEWS. If you have a pet, you def need to bring them here too. Great area for them to safely run while you soak in the scenery.

Very nice way to spend an hour or two.

By kpaddler |

Nice walking paths with beautiful views. Plenty of overlooks to take pictures. I walked both to the fort, and to the lighthouse, and had a good time. Paths can be steep in places, and can be rocky, so where good shoes, or sneakers. There were also a few food trucks, so there was food to be had.

Beautiful setting

By Jeff S |

Visited it a couple of days. Beautiful lighthouse in a beautiful setting. The rocky shoreline makes a great setting.

Must see...

By Tweetypie96 |

Great experience. You do pay to park. Food trucks available. Excellent views of an iconic fixture in Maine. Took a boat tour to see it by water, different experience to see by land.

A must-see

By jdean12345 |

Beautiful lighthouse and stunning views all around. The museum was also very interesting to visit. We spent a lot of time around the light house grounds and within the park itself - not a bad view anywhere! So lovely to see this lighthouse up close!

Portland Head Light.

This is a nice place to walk around and see the sights. The head light was very pretty and interesting. The history of it was neat. The view was incredible.

Postcard perfect

By ogerkan |

One of the prettiest views we found during our tour of Cape Elizabeth. plenty of paths to explore the coastline as well.

Craggy coastline and beautiful views

By mizpatch |

Located an easy 20 minutes south of Portland, this lighthouse is worth the trip. The craggy coast here is a show in itself. There is a nice path along then shoreline, and easy access to the rocks if you are the adventuring sort. Better have good balance and good knees! The lighthouse is viewable from many points and is the quintessential Maine lighthouse.

This Lady survived the brutal 2024 winter storms.

By NHjo |

I took a few shots of Portland Head Light from different angles than I have in the past, which included a shot from the Bite Into Maine food truck. It was a perfect day -- warm but not humid, with a nice breeze. The lighthouse survived the terrible winter storms we had, although some of the other buildings and embankment didn't do as well.

Beautiful!

By BangkokSachse |

We spent about two hours at Portland Head Light. The parking in the front cost 5 dollars. The lighthouse is beautiful. We also walked down to take pictures at sea level.

Beautiful views and lots of space to walk

By John K |

The lighthouse is a great place to visit for anyone coming to Maine. Can't climb it, but lots of space to walk around it and the views are incredible. Plenty of walking paths and even a spot to walk down to the beach if you're able of foot. A must see for a trip to Maine!

Beautiful Location!!!

By JohnyQuest64 |

On our 1st visit to Portland, Maine my wife and I spent an afternoon at Portland Head Lighthouse. We loved strolling around the grounds which are very well kept. The views of the lighthouse, water and cliffs are wonderful.

Beautiful place

By Jake23 |

The lighthouse is amazing. It towers over the cliffs and sea. The walk down to the lighthouse is beautiful as well. You can walk in the park and take picture for free although you do need to pay for parking.

My favourite lighthouse

By gtangg |

The rain did not deter us from visiting two days in a row. We would’ve loved to see the Head Light in sunny weather but it held its appeal even with the overcast skies. There are a couple of food trucks for those who have walked up an appetite. The lobster rolls were really good but we didn’t manage to sample the gelato.

Even better in person! It's a must see if you're in Maine.

By Mark-Christi H |

You've seen the iconic lighthouse in many photos but seeing it in person is just an experience you wont' forget. I'm so glad we were able to see it while on our trip to Maine.

This place is beautiful!! 😃 There are places where you can walk out on the rocks and there were several people fishing. There were some food trucks and plenty of paid parking areas. The gift store had closed at 4 and we were there at 5. The park is open from sunrise to sunset. Beautiful place to take pictures!!

Nice Lighthouse

By bill925 |

The lighthouse is a popular spot so best to get there early or late in the day. I would have given it five stars but there is a security guard riding around on a cart with a bull horn right before sunset telling everyone to leave. I am a professional photographer and was there on a night when a full moon was going to rise, but not able to get the shot since everyone was run out.

Most famous lighthouse in Portland

By Wtrav77 |

This was our third visit and we always enjoy it. This is the most famous lighthouse in the Portland area, and a great picture stop. There is a large parking lot a short distance from the lighthouse, and port a johns restrooms there. Several short hiking trails as well.

Lighthouses of Portland

By Memaw & Papa |

My sister and I traveled to Portland, Maine in September 2020 (during Covid restrictions). We had a blast from the time we got off the plane until we left 5 days later. We traveled up the coast to Arcadia National Park from Portland and back catching a lighthouse at every stop. Portland Head and Nubble were two of my favorites, but we saw 14 lighthouses in all. Google maps told us what lighthouses were near us.

Lighthouse Hopping in Portland

We made it a mission to see all the lighthouses while visiting Portland—and we did it! Each one had its own unique charm and story. They were all special in their own way but Portland Head was the best. Definitely one of the highlights of the trip.

Great Stop on our Tour of Coastal Maine

By Travel80 |

Portland Head Light is such an Historic Lighthouse that it had to been on our list of places to visit during our road trip through coastal Maine. George Washington commissioned construction of the Portland Head Light in 1787. We had a great time walking the grounds and seeing this beautiful Lighthouse! We spent about 30 minutes at the site and took some great photos. Highly Recommend!

Almost spring.

By NHjo |

This place is nice to visit even in February. The water is a teal blue, and the sky is a brilliant blue (due to the cold -- no haze). The lighthouse was still standing, even after the nor'easter we had a few months ago.

Stunning!

It was windy and drizzling rain but it made for the perfect lighthouse outing! The very nice Scottish artist selling originals next to the fort and climbing over the rocks was just so much fun!

This Lighthouse you must visit in Portland ME with the raw sea around the parkhead

By Henry-Tuur |

The very impressiv raw sea around the rockhead, where this Head Light Tower is build. You become a good overview of the coast of Maine on all sides here. When you come by car you have to pay at least 4 dollar for the parkingtime: so take your time to enjoy this outview with a little walk around.

Iconic Site and Lovely Park

By janiewa |

How wonderful that a lovely site like this is maintained by the community! The lighthouse is picture perfect in every way and the surroundings are beautifully maintained. The museum is very informative (and super reasonable at $2/person) and the gift shop has a great selection. I would definitely put this site at the top of the list for places to visit in Maine!

Amazing Views

By Travelers0076 |

Absolutely beautiful park and views! This park is gorgeous and a great place to spend a couple of hours for a nice, long walk to enjoy the weather. It is free, which was surprising (had to pay for the museum if you choose to go in). My husband and girls enjoyed climbing on the rocks there and looking in the tide pools on the rocks. There are a couple of food trucks (bring cash) that were there selling lobster rolls and coffee. Be aware the trucks are really expensive even for a touristy area. The neighborhood to get to this lighthouse was absolutely gorgeous! Breathtaking houses, views, and just a beautiful area in Portland. Highly recommend if you go here to drive a little further to Cape Elizabeth to see the Two Heads Lighthouse..another beautiful view (parking is tight) and grab a lunch at the Two Heads Lobster Shack (parking close together but separate). We shared a Lobster Roll and my girls wanted the homemade strawberry rhubarb pie! Both delicious. Prices were not bad and they had lots of options but we just wanted a snack.

Beautiful Lighthouse

By Steve M |

This is another beautiful lighthouse and a must see in Portland. They have a small gift shop where you can purchase tshirts, sweatshirts magnets, etc. You do pay for parking and you must use a credit card or debit card only. If you have a problem using a porta potty then use the bathroom before you come. The area is beautiful and worth visiting.

no tours due to Covid ~ but still worth a visit!

By Colleen C |

This lighthouse is with-in the Fort William State Park as well as the Ram lighthouse. due to covid-19 you can not tour Lighthouses ~ but the location of these are amazing. This park has hiking, places to picnic, great views of the ocean, basketball courts, beach to swim at and even multiple port-a-potties! can definitely make this place a full day visit.

Plenty of parking have to pay through parking meters.

Simply beautiful

By Caitlin D’Angelo |

It was such a nice stop to end our trip. It was just beautiful. We would like to come back and look around more when the weather is warmer.

Great Views

By stephenskier123 |

We enjoyed our visit to this lighthouse, the most photographed in the USA. It is in Fort Williams Park at the outskirts of Portland.
Car parking can be very busy as it is a very busy attraction.
The weather was bad when we visited which actually made it more spectacular with the waves beating against the coastline.
Small, interesting museum inside.

Gorgeous Lighthouse

By TophersTravels71 |

Amazing picturesque place. Good hiking around the area with beautiful views all around. Bummed we couldn't go in.

Stunningly beautiful!

By W2322CLjennifers |

What a fantastic lighthouse to visit! Although you cannot climb the lighthouse, there is a museum with extensive displays that is only a few dollars to see. For those of us with lighthouse passport books, you can get four stamps as there are other lighthouses within view of Portland Head Light. There is a small gift shop. And of course, the lighthouse is amazing and beautiful to photograph! There is a rocky beach to explore, and also Fort Williams is adjacent to the lighthouse. A must-see for any lighthouse hunter! Tip: Check the museum hours before you go. They closed at 2 pm the day we went.

Great Views and Area!!!

By kghudson |

Great day, great vistas, beautiful sights and sounds. Large park with lots to do and see but the main attraction is the lighthouse. Did not do the museum or walk the grounds, but would definitely do if we had more time!

Very scenic and photogenic

By Harry D |

Really worth going out here for some beautiful, classic Maine shots of the coast and the lighthouse.

Portland Head Light is a prized landmark for its historical significance

By sanju_222323 |

It is the oldest lighthouse in Maine and as per some articles- the most photographed lighthouse in America ( i am not sure though). Completed in 1791, and acquired from the U.S. Coast Guard by the Town of Cape Elizabeth in 1993, Portland Head Light is located adjacent to Fort Williams Park.

We were coming back from Acadia and my wife suggested this, it was just 30 minutes detour and man was I glad! thanks to my wife - I am so fascinated by lighthouses and I just loved this one.

Portland Head Light is a prized landmark for its historical significance, but also for the adjacent 90-acre park that is its home, with stunning ocean views, hiking and walking paths dotted with viewing lenses, and other historic structures. Here, you'll find artifacts, documents, navigational aids, Fresnel lenses, models, and photographs that detail the history and timeline of the lighthouse and Fort Williams.

The lighthouse, museum, and Fort Williams Park itself make an enjoyable family outing spot with its many opportunities for exploring. There are also no permanent restrooms within the park.

The Park is open year-round from sunrise to sunset, and admission is free.

Great piece of History

Great experience a the museum. The gentlemen inside at the time was extremely knowledgeable and shared it with all. Take the time to walk the entire area. Check out the cliff walk and forts etc.

Beautiful Landscape

By TouringDogs |

This is not just another lighthouse to check off your list. It is surrounded in history sitting in a park that used to be a military fort. We enjoyed walking around on the paths and petting the dogs at the dog park. My only complaint is that I couldn't find one trash can!

Best Views Near Portland!

By Chloe Thomas |

When in the area, make sure to stop by the Portland Head Light. You’ll be sure to get some of the best views in the area. There’s even a few small trails you can take for a change in scenery. We only spent about an hour hear but could have made a day out of it picnicking and people watching.

Not to be missed

By Cindy H |

We almost didn't see this gorgeous site. We were on a 7-state road trip and this town was an overnight stop. After arriving to the hotel by 4:00, we knew we'd have to go out for dinner even in the stormy weather, but I noticed site in the guide book and talked my husband into seeing it. We only had an hour there and could have stayed longer to just keep taking pictures. We had no idea it was so popular. We watched the waves crashing against the rocks just below the light and then went around to get a view of it with the ocean in the background. Everyone was poised with the phones/cameras to capture the perfect photo. We are so happy we took the time to visit this place.

Nice visit

By TravelerzPA |

It’s worth stopping to see. We enjoyed the views and learning a little bit about the history. Really beautiful backdrop.

Parking is $2 an hour

By Melanie T |

Portland Head is supposedly the most photographed lighthouse in the country (or world?). And it was a pretty sight to see. They have a coastal walking trail. However, you can only see the lighthouse from certain angles. Parking is $2 an hour but just make sure you check opening/closing times because I believe the lot does close. We came at around 1:30 on a Monday and while the lot was pretty full, we were still able to find a spot. But of course, as with any tourist attraction, the earlier you go the better.

Always a wonderful place to visit

By Alison P |

Beautiful light and lots of places to view it from different angles. The gift shop is very small and wish it could be expanded.

Gorgeous area with history

By Sechandler |

Absolutely amazing at sunset. Got there about an hour early and explored the Fort area. Lots of great history to explore as well. You can see other lighthouses from this area as well. Parking is pay by app at meters and very reasonable at a couple bucks an hour.

Worth a visit

By EC13091 |

This lighthouse is worth a trip, but beware of possible large crowds. Parking is a bit distant, but the views of the harbor are lovely. Not spectacular, but a good short visit.

What a setting!

By bukagirl |

Even if you are not a lighthouse lover you must see this one.
The setting is spectacular the history interesting.
A path to walk around and get beautiful photos.
Saw a lobster boat bring in his catch.!
Pay to park.
Make sure you check out the art work in the parking lot.
Now I know why it is one of the most photographed lighthouse in Maine!

Portland Head Lighthouse is a great scenic tour - definitely worth doing!

By Aud E |

We arrived the Portland Head Light and were greeted by a great staff member who advised us of how to traverse the park, what directions to look in for all the noteworthy sights on their cliff walk. He was spot on (I think his name was Tony) and we really enjoyed our time touring the park. While we were there, we also had the additional sights of the leftover surf from Hurricane Teddy, heading to Nova Scotia. Nice park to visit and easy cliff walk with scenic ocean views.

Beautiful accessible lighthouse on the picturesque Maine coast.

By John G |

This is the most photographed lighthouse in America for a reason. It sits on o rocky outcropping and can be viewed from land on three sides. There is ample (paid but reasonable) parking. The are easy trails to follow along the shore and you can climb out onto the rocks for a better view if you are feeling adventurous. Overall just a beautiful peaceful place!

LOVE this lighthouse and its history!

By NHjo |

My friend and I are 'locals', but we never tire of going to see this lighthouse, or Fort Williams Park in general. Someone from Kentucky told us that he thought Portland Head Light was one of the most beautiful New England lighthouses he'd seen, including the setting, and we have to agree. It has a great history, too.

Glad we visited

By pcywca |

Spent the morning here. Very interesting and of course beautiful. Make sure to visit the museum and really read the information in there. We were fortunate enough to tour this place when the author, Stephen Lyons was there selling his book. He signed it too. Be prepared to walk and pay the money to park. It wasn’t too much-$2/hour.

Iconic but crowded

By mcollazo288 |

The Portland Head Light was on my top to do in Maine. It is located in Cape Elizabeth outside of Portland! So happy I have a handicap parking permit because the parking is not easy neither the walk. So many tour buses and people that made it hard to enjoy such an iconic lighthouse. It is pretty sitting on the coast with a great view, but if your looking for the perfect picture you’ll have to go around the side to the cliffs and climb down! This is the picture spot. Also less crowded. Don’t spend time doing the scenic walk if you went to enjoy the waves and less people. Go right of the lighthouse. Small gift shop only 10 people at a time and good luck if a tour bus is there. I visited many other beautiful lighthouses up the Maine coast. Found beautiful quiet spots and great places away from Portland.

Beautiful but not accessible

By marierm |

Yes, this is a beautiful view. But I found myself among a hundred people standing around disappointed that both the museum and gift shop were closed. 2:00 is very early to close even during the week. I wish I had skipped this stop and spent more time at other museums and trails that would have been open and welcoming.

Highlight of the trip!

By Lynn H |

Awesome! We went in the afternoon on a Sunday and walked around the park. The lighthouse is scenic. Went back the next day to watch the sunrise and it was spectacular!!!!

I love lighthouses and this is one of my favorites

By ionesagem |

When I first caught a glimpse of this particular lighthouse I instantly saw why this lighthouse is so wonderful.

A Few Tips About Portland's Head Light

By Marty Bielicki |

The oldest lighthouse in Maine is only 5 miles from downtown Portland. Built in 1791 under the direction of George Washington for $1500, this lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth is an iconic image along the famous Maine coastline.

Operated by Cape Elizabeth, the entrance fee is “FREE,” but parking will cost you $5.00 for a 2-hour limit. An automatic easy to use machines are located along the parking area. The $5 dollar payment is well worth viewing this majestic piece of history, as well as the walk along the rocky, but well-paved path, along the coast.

There is a museum and a well-run tourist shop for souvenirs. At our visit, there was a food truck selling the popular lobster rolls. A YouTube program said these rolls are quite delicious.

On the southern end of the lighthouse is large white-painted writing on a rock. This area is where a British three-masted sailing ship, the Annie C. Maguire, struck a ledge in 1886. The ship was sailing from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The light of the 80-foot high black and white conical shaped lighthouse can be seen as far as 28 miles away. There have been over 3 dozen lighthouse keepers over the years. It was automated in 1986.

Fort Williams was built near the lighthouse in 1872 by the U.S. Army. Later in the 1930’s the fort was used by the Civilian Conservation Corp. Remnants of this fort can be walked on above for a superb view of the area. The fort officially closed in 1964.

A family can spend a good 2 hours roaming around the 90-acre complex. The bathrooms, though, are porta-potties. My wife refused to use these potties. We also found there is not one single trash can. What you have as trash is brought out by you.

If you found this review to be helpful in any way, please click “Thumbs-up” to let me know.

Majestic Lighthouse

By Uccman39 |

We had a very nice picnic dinner on a beautiful day. A very nice looking lighthouse. The one drawback was that the park closed before dusk, depriving us of a sunset view. Everything else was good.

Lovely way to spend a couple of hours and get some New England history

By TedSLC |

Beautiful park; spacious and well-maintained. Not a ton of stuff to see beyond the lighthouse and a small museum, but the history of the place is well-documented and there's lots and lots of room for a picnic, or for kids to walk around. Parking is cheap, the museum is also inexpensive, and there actually are public restrooms (portable johns) despite what other reviews would say. It's definitely worth the scenic drive to get there; plan on spending a couple of hours.

Beautiful

By Trisha |

It was a rainy day, but we made the best of it! We enjoyed the museum and the little gift shop they have! Super affordable and we learned more than we thought we could about lighthouses! We then explored around and visited some of the old structures at Fort Williams Park! We went just as a couple and I was super happy we could just enjoy and not be rushed by our kiddos! But I will be bringing them next time because the artifacts and views are worth it! I wish the old structures were better taken care of!

Motor coach Tour visit

By RinggoldRandy |

As a motor coach tour operator, I have been carrying groups to the lighthouse for years.
This is not a stop I will ever make again. The attendants were extremely rude and, for the privilege of dropping people off to view the light house and shop in their souvenir stand, we were charged $170.00.
We are thoroughly disgusted with the way things are run there and I highly suggest that any other tour company looking to include a stop here. DON'T

Pretty area

By LauriH44 |

This has a beautiful view of the ocean and area along the coast. the lighthouse is clean and pretty - couldn't go in it though. Nice little gift shop. There is a big park area adjacent to the lighthouse, so that would be a great place for kids or pets to run around. Had to pay for parking, but it wasn't very much. Glad to have stopped.

Oldest and Most Picturesque

By jaybeeFL |

This lighthouse still functioning is the oldest and most photographed in all of Maine. That is noteworthy as Maine is home to a large number of lighthouses. It is easy to find, there is some parking but it does get busy on the weekends. It is especially picturesque at sunup and sundown. Head over to the rock outcropping for the best view and try to capture the rocky inlet just below and in front of the lighthouse. The water was crystal clear when we were there and there were several families swimming and shelling in the calm waters.

Total Dissppointment

By 921kennethv |

Cannot recommend this tour company at all. Tour was booked prior to travels. Party of 7. Do to the nationwide cyber issue in July 5 of our party could not make it. 2 of this did go on the tour. They said they would refund our money under those circumstances. Since we have been back from Maine we have gotten nothing but a runaround! Do not recommend them do to business ethics!!

An absolute gem on the Maine coastline

By Stock Sniper |

This iconic lighthouse has an aura of timelessness that takes you back in history. Standing there, with the waves crashing against the rocks, it's like a scene from a postcard come to life. The views are absolutely breathtaking, and it's the perfect spot to catch a dramatic sunrise or a serene sunset. The surrounding Fort Williams Park is also a cool bonus with its trails and open spaces. But what struck me the most was the sense of peace and serenity you feel while gazing at the vast Atlantic Ocean from this historic beacon. Portland Head Light is a must-visit if you're in the area, and it's an experience that lingers in your memory long after you've left.

Lovely stop!

By Karin D |

Not much I can add to the other reviews. It's beautiful - make sure to catch it at all angles. The grounds are lovely too. It is very popular so be sure to plan some time to wait for people to move out of the way for your photo. There are 2-3 food trucks offering a variety of delicious sounding food. The gift shop has limited hours since they are having trouble finding help. It was oddly relaxing to sit, look at it and the ocean. It was a pleasant hour.

Truly stunning view

By Ana O |

Really nice, wonderful place to visit when is hot or cold, you cannot miss it. It is a nice leveled walk.

Classic New England coastline

By wasmith59 |

Must see this on a visit to Portland. Short drive from downtown. Several artists had booths while we were there. Must pay to park.

Stunning

By Ashley R |

The views are pure magic! Do yourself a favor and put this spot on the list when you're in Portland!

A great outdoor experience close to Portland

By Benjamin |

We visited a few lighthouses during our trip to Portland, and this one was definitely the best one. It is beautiful, as is the view on the sea that is simply spectacular. In addition, its surroundings consist of a nice park, that is very appropriate for picnics and outdoor times with the family. I definitely recommend the visit.

Beware, parking fees are a bit high, and unavoidable if we come with a car.

Beauty comes to Light!!

By Georganne H |

It is very easy to see why this is the most photographed spot in Maine. with it's amazing views and history plus the added bonus of the Gorgeous Gelato food truck that served the best gelato! (Amaretto was incredible!) I met the owner on my first visit there with the Portland Discovery Trolley Tour and the truck was closed. He said he has a location in town on Fore St. and when I asked if his gelato tasted like Italy's he smiled and announced brightly that it;s better. On my second trip the next day with The Real Portland Tour I got the opportunity to taste it . He's right!
With each tour I was only allowed twenty minutes each time but I loved it! Highly recommended!

It's that good!

By Amanda A |

The light is in a great park that has some good little walks. The light is great (it's a light, LOL) you can walk around it and there are a lot of people. There's a lobster roll van onsite which has some good product and a line. Great views of the harbor. Parking is paid but you could park in the neighborhood nearby and walk in - it's a good size walk though.

Fabulous lighthouse

By milliegordon2 |

This is a stunning lighthouse, well-organized to handle the crowds. It even offers a small gift shop and several food trucks. The vistas are magnificent. If you enjoy seeing a lighthouse, this is among the very best.

Spectacular!!

By MaineGuy777 |

The most beautiful lighthouse in Maine, in my opinion! It is well preserved, and built on a cliff, with waves crashing everywhere!

The Christmas wreath on the side of the lighthouse was still there in mid-January, but it was freezing out there, with the wind howling! And some of the paths were a bit muddy. It was worth it though, as I warmed up in my car!

It's only a short ride from downtown Portland (15 minutes or so).

If you visit one lighthouse - this is it!

By AjayCha |

Amazing experience on a gorgeous day! We also spent the couple of bucks to see the museum which had some great exhibits on the history of the light house - Even my teenager had a great time and he hates museums!!

Beautiful but go early before it’s crowded with buses!

By PS101 |

Beautiful for photos. Great views with the rocks and water. Go early! We went around 8am and there weren’t many people there. We went back at 10am and it was packed with tour buses and people.

Lighthouse mania!

By DannyWasserman |

Stunning views visiting Portland Head Light. This was on our bucket list, and we did not miss. Amazing views of all the historic lighthouses all over the Maine coastline. Don't miss these attractions.

Must see when in Portland

By marbenPa |

Beautiful lighthouse and trails. Easy to spend 2 hours admiring the different views including the harbor where other lighthouses are visible and the adjacent park

Beautiful!

By Rebecca L |

We missed this on our first visit to Portland over 10 years ago. I’m so glad we drove out here to see Portland Head Light on this trip. It’s the quintessential New England lighthouse with views of the waves splashing the rocks. While you can’t go inside the lighthouse, the scenery is amazing!

Portland Head Light

By Jonathan C. |

One of the most famous and most photographed lighthouses in Maine. Located in Fort Williams park, wide open green space to explore.

Definitely worth a visit!

By Cynthia B |

This lighthouse is beautiful! You can get right up near it and the views are just spectacular. The whole area is just stunning and you could spend hours just walking around enjoying the scenery. Definitely worth your time to visit! The museum was not open yet for the season when we were there last week so we did not get to visit it.

Picture perfect

By DLP |

We visited the lighthouse late in the day as the sun was beginning to set and it was absolutely beautiful. The dramatic coastline provided a magnificent backdrop and there were plenty of photo opportunities.

A Maine Must-see!

By Kraig M |

Beautiful! A must-see while in Cape Elizabeth or Portland! Easy parking, free access. Make sure to check out the fort structures while here. Great picnic site!!!

Portland Head Light

By burkejh |

We enjoyed the landscape surrounding the light house. The museum at the light house was interesting.

Maine’s oldest lighthouse

By H F |

Absolutely beautiful light house. The park is very nice as well unfortunately it was too cold for us to walk. It’s a great place to stop, take in some history. There is also a mansion on the property.

Good things to know

By Patron17 |

We visited on a weekday and the lighthouse and museum were closed.

While we could not go inside we were able to climb on the rocks and take in the great sights from the East of the light.

Beautiful Views

By Olga L |

Beautiful views. Easy drive. Perfect lighting. Take the time to relax and take in the beauty surrounding you. We visited in the early evening and it was a perfect time.

Historic AND gorgeous.

By NHjo |

There have been thousands of photos taken of iconic Portland Head Light because it's the oldest lighthouse in Maine and a magnificent one. It was built in 1791, around the time when Fletcher Christian was on Pitcairn Island with the other Bounty mutineers and a few Tahitians. On the beautiful mid-June day that we went, there were lots of tourists taking advantage of the views, food trucks, trails, and park.

Very cool, even in the rain.

By Have Camera, Will Travel |

I was looking forward to this stop on our road trip for months. Of course, it had to be on a very rainy evening, so our amazing photo stop turned dreary. It was still an excellent stop. We wandered up the trail a ways to get the lighthouse with the cliff below. We also watched a cruise ship sail past, which added an interesting element to some of the pictures. Hopefully your weather is a lot nicer than ours.

Scenic Picture

By adventurer1234 |

We went to the Portland Head Light Sunday morning before a wedding in the afternoon. It is a very scenic view with the harbor and ocean in the background. The waves crashing on the rocks were breathtaking. We had several younger people with us that climbed on the rocks. It looked like they enjoyed themselves. By going Sunday morning I think we beat the crowds on a beautiful sunny day.

Good for all ages

By Lisamarch |

This is a stop that's good for all ages. You can see the view and lighthouse without walking on rough terrain. Parking is $2 per hour and it was a two hour minimum. We walked the length of the coast path but most people seemed to just walk to the light, so we kept away from other people most of the time.

Scenic place to spend a few hours.

By LondonNefertiti |

We drove here to have a walk around the coastal paths and visit this lighthouse. Great place for families to beach comb and lots of grassy areas to play ball games. Lots of car parks .

Portland Headlight

By Ranay |

If you like lighthouses add this spot to your trip wear comfortable shoes beautiful views of the ocean. Beautiful drive from New Hampshire.

The Best Lighthouse we Saw

By Sherpa2286 |

This is well worth the time to visit. Be sure to walk down the path a ways to get a better picture of the lighthouse. Interesting to see how they lived.

Amazingly beautiful!

By travelinsuemaryland |

While heading home we planned a few places of interest to check out. Portland headlight was one at the top of the list. It did not disappoint! The rocky coast and gorgeous blue water along with the lighthouse made for some lovely pictures. We walked around some, didn’t do anything else other than this. Short and sweet visit, but such a good stop!

Head light at it's best!

By llhtexas |

Beautiful grounds with great views of the head light against the ocean. The property includes trails for walking, picnic areas with BBQ pits and plenty of grounds to relax and enjoy the view. Food and drink options available also.

Wonderful park in all seasons--but be respectful

By Franco B |

As local residents, this is a great getaway in any season, snowshoeing to lobster rolls on summery afternoons.

To visitors, please follow the map directions. Portland Head Light is in Fort Williams Park which is very well marked on Shore Road. Many visitors turn too early into narrow dead end streets in quiet neighborhoods. Visitors get frustrated, park and try to walk to the park, and invariably get ticketed for blocking roads and driveways.

Please follow the signs on Shore Road to a very large, well marked entrance to the park. Over 200 parking spaces on site should make your visit easy and delightful.

Most amazing views

By Keri L |

An absolute must see if in the area!! Easy walk and the views are breathtaking!! You could spend hours here just enjoying the water and relaxing sounds

moderately interesting with filthy public restrooms (porta potties)

By ks |

This is a moderately interesting site overrun with tourist buses and with THE worst and least hygienic public restrooms (porta potties) we have experienced in 40 states! My advice - don't bother and definitely don't use the porta potties which are an absolute disgrace.

beautiful lighthouse with park

By wrpech |

Very nice and well maintained lighthouse and park. A little crowded and hard to find a parking spot but interesting place to visit. The little museum shop is way cheaper than the stuff downtown.

Beautiful views and walkways. Dog Friendly.

By Dolores P |

This is a beautiful spot with ample parking and many paved walking paths and photo ready viewpoints. They allow dogs and also have an out of the way area where dogs are allowed off leash. Lots of lush, mowed, grassy hillsides and some picnic tables if you want to bring a picnic or there is a food truck 'Bite into Maine' which has the best Lobster rolls.

Breathtaking!

By Sue D |

Absolutely worth the trip! So beautiful! I have seen so many pictures of the lighthouse, I had to see it for myself! So glad I did!

Beautiful lighthouse

By Sinatralis |

If you are in Portland Maine, this is a must see the white house is beautiful and of course the scenery around it is beautiful. It’s an easy find an easy walk and great photo opportunities here as well.

Beautiful scenery

By Joni P |

Beautiful scenery made me understand why this attraction was full of tourists on a fall Sunday. Oldest lighthouse in the U. S., but they don't have the staff for tourists to climb it. The lighthouse, ocean cliff trail, sparkling water and boats lead to many gorgeous photos.
Many tourists were bussed in on big excursion buses, but this state park only has portable toilets for the thousands of tourists who visit here. Strange!

Breath taking

By ROCruiser |

Absolutely breath taking views everywhere you look. This is a must-see while in Portland, Maine. From the cruise port, we called for an Uber out for about $17 one way, well-worth it! We were told that public transportation would be too complicated and time-consuming. Enjoy a picnic of the best lobster roll from the food truck "Bite into Maine" near the entrance with a million-dollar view of the lighthouse then walk around the trails.

Must See While In Maine

By Maltipoo16 |

This is a must see when you visit Maine. It was absolutely magnificent, and much more amazing in person. The view of the ocean was amazing and watching the waves hit the cliffs was hypnotizing. The lighthouse is truly spectacular and everyone should stop to see it if they ever visit Maine.

Must see!

By Christian |

I’ve been to hundreds of lighthouses all down the east & west coast and I must say this is one of the top 3 most beautiful! I could sit here watching the waves crash against the rocks all day. The lighthouse is breathtaking from both sides and the surrounding park is nice. The cliff walk is a beautiful walk. I like that there are numerous benches to stop and sit and take in the beauty of the lighthouse. The lighthouse out in the distance is an added bonus!

Wishes I could have gotten there earlier

By Sean S |

I was driving through a spontaneous road trip through Maine, I spent a few hours after their closing time there. The trails were spectacular leading up to it, and I did an honest to God, gasp when I saw it the first time unobstructed. It's beautiful. Wish I could have gotten there earlier in the day to see and learn more but I'd recommend going for sure

Went in the freezing cold, still recommend!

By Amanda S |

I came to see this lighthouse last weekend, it was very very cold! I only lasted 15 minutes outside, but those 15 minutes were great. Such a beautiful view. It looks like there are paths to walk on along the water with lighthouse views. I will definitely be returning in the nicer weather! Beware that there is a lot of ice there at this time of the year!

Really good time. I've been to 44 states. When asked my favorite I have to say two Wyoming and Maine.

By Chris M |

Beautiful place. If you just go its a little more touristy than you'd think. Plenty to do. Great place for pictures. Long walks if you want on nice trails. The water is clean.

Porta potty only

By mrosas24 |

Picture perfect but crowded parking lots. No restrooms except porta potty row. We did not have time for museum, if it was open.

The lighthouse in late October.

By NHjo |

Stopped by on a very warm and windy late October weekday and there were still tons of tourists, including a few busloads. The foliage is just past peak but still gorgeous, so the grounds were just as picturesque as the lighthouse itself.

Mesmerizing!

By TodandTiff |

You can’t visit Portland without visiting this lighthouse. This is the most beautiful place I have visited. God’s amazing beauty at work. Highly recommend

Very scenic

By harryatkck |

We visited late in the day & was only able to see the outside. This lighthouse is one of the most scenic in Maine and I am glad we stopped by.

Most beautiful lighthouse, Maine

By 2016Judy |

Pictures may be worth a thousand words, but they don’t do this place justice, at all. Parking was $6 for the timeframe we stay..we parked as close as we could. Staff in the gift shop were very friendly.

Parking at Fort Williams

By dianaonacki |

oh i disagree that Portland Head Light is not worth paying to park!!!! IT IS AN INCREDIBLE Place and i don't mind paying at all!!!!!! LOTS of trails and lots of beautiful flowers to see and forts to explore!!!

the only thing i think is crazy is my office had our outing in the Gazebo yesterday. I heard it cost $600 to rent that. And, workers who had parked in the lot right there got tickets. I mean, if someone is paying to rent that Gazebo, shouldn't parking be free for the employees. It is what it is i guess!!!!

and, i am still so glad that FINALLY Cape Elizabeth is charging for parking @ Fort Williams. The money they receive will keep that beautiful park and lighthouse beautiful!!!!!

Cold!

By Hirashiki |

We went to Portland Head Light today. The gift shop only opens on the weekends during off season. I wish there is a better bathroom facility. There are portable potties available. I wish there is a real bathroom there. Considering this is such a popular tourist destination, the bathroom facility should really be improved!

Just Wow!

By Stan C |

Worth the drive! Great views of the lighthouse and history- see why this is the top visited lighthouse in Maine! While many tours were coming and going, spend the time taking in the breathtaking views!

WAY overrated

By WilliamWillieWilson |

There are A LOT of lighthouses across the state of Maine. But this one is WAY overrated. It's a solid 3 stars, an average experience. The steep cliffs are majestic, but it's the only lighthouse in the state where you'll pay to park, there are larger waves elsewhere, and there are no distinguishing features other than the fact that it's the oldest lighthouse in Maine, dating to 1791. That in itself is amazing, but there is nothing special about the area compared to places like Nubble Point or Quoddy Head.

Very Scenic

By Miamimomfl |

This was a short drive from Portland and is surrounded by a residential neighborhood. There is a large parking lot (make sure to pay because they give tickets) which fills up quickly. The lighthouse and the walk around the cliffs are beautiful, scenic and good exercise. Great for pictures. There is a small beach which had someone getting out of a kayak.

Cons: Only have portable toilets. Museum and gift shops were closed.

Very beautiful site!

By Marmie29 |

Superb lighthouse that can be admired from all sides, plenty of space and ample parking (paid of course). Not to be missed for lighthouse lovers!

A shining light in history

By gladysbarros66 |

The Portland Head Light was such an incredible sight the closer you walked towards it. The light was shining bright in the mist. Every visitor was respectful of one another and wore their masks. The ground were well kept. It was a nice adventure for the last weekend of summer vacation.

Pretty Lighthouse - easy to see/add on to trip

By Shereen M |

It’s not very far from the airport or downtown area of Portland, Maine - so if you have 30 minutes to spare- it’s worth seeing as I think this is the most popular lighthouse and also the easiest for tourists to access / see … cute museum and gift shop attached and lots of food vendors on site too. I’d definitely recommend adding it to your itinerary

Beautiful

By Rachel P |

Free parking, easy access to the lighthouse. Lots of history that many others have already wrote about. This was my first lighthouse in Maine and the first time seeing the Maine coast and it was exactly how I pictured it should look.

An historic lighthouse, stunning views, and crashing ocean waves. Perfect!

By Kmcoyle |

We had a bit of time and wanted to get an ocean-fix, so headed to Portland Head Light. Just wonderful! We started with a stop at the lighthouse: so beautiful! There is a little museum ($10 I think) right at the lighthouse but does not include a tour of the lighthous that we considered but we took a miss. We did not want to be inside on such a lovely day! We walked around the lighthouse a saw some fantastic views of the coastline! It was a somewhat foggy day, so we were also treated to the foghorn! So cool! We also discovered Longfellow's hangout when he would come to visit his pals at the lighthouse. Who knew?

There are a number of trails to meander with benchs at different spots. We noted a number of food trucks including an ice cream option!

We then drove down to the beach, snagged a picnic table and had a lovely picnic with a fabulous view of the ocean.

Plenty of parking. Very peaceful. Just enjoy!

Beautiful!!

By Hgtravl |

Beautiful in Nov. It was very chilly with the wind right on the water, so if you go not in the summer, just dress warm! Beautiful views of the ocean, cliffs, and the lighthouse itself is gorg. Beautiful spot for photos.

Gorgeous views

By Travelbugsforlife |

Gorgeous views. There are a lot of parking areas (pay parking) so that was nice we found a spot pretty easily. The whole coast area is beautiful and you can explore a decent stretch. The lighthouse itself is stunning and a beautiful piece of history.

Historic Portland Head Light

By Anita G |

We visited after seeing Portland Head Light from a sail on portlandschooner.com It's a beautiful place to walk and explore. The only cost was a modest parking fee, payable by machine. The buildings and shop are closed now, but plenty to see outside.

Great family visit

By Mountain Hikers |

Great place to stop off with the family and stretch your legs with a good walk. Beautiful scenery and amazing history. George Washington was here in the 1700s, how cool is that.

Beautiful views. Looks like a postcard from Maine. When we were there the Coast Guard came to drop off a delivery was amazing to witness. Would definately stop here if you visit Portland.

Beautiful Portland Head Light

Beautiful lighthouse! Lovely park with plenty to do. Take a picnic lunch and spend the day exploring this area. Lighthouse is beautiful as is the coastline here. There are a couple trails you can walk to see the lighthouse from every perspective..

Breathtaking Views

This is a must see stop, just for the photo ops alone…. This is what you think about when you think Maine. So many different vantage points.

Great lighthouse

By J-Mac |

Considered the most photographed lighthouse in Maine! For good reason as the views are amazing and this is one of the tallest and most accessible lighthouses in Maine!

Several parking spaces, but you have to pay $5 for 2 hours. Easy 5 min walk to the lighthouse from the parking lot.

Also a food truck by the parking lot serving lobster rolls, but at +$38, this was the most expensive lobster roll I had seen in all of Maine!

Nice lighthouse near Portland

Located in a large public park just outside Portland, the lighthouse is photogenic and the place is quite crowded.

Beautiful!

Beautiful lighthouse and historic park! Added bonus, a cliff walk with gorgeous views! Don’t miss it if you’re in the area.

An icon of Maine

One of my favorite lighthouses we had visited - of course. It is a must-see if you are anywhere near the area and can afford the time.

A photographer’s treasure!

By Serviceprof |

Lighthouse is located within park that has nice vistas and significant walking trails. Another photographer’s dream site! Rugged landscape lets you know you’re truly in Maine. Many plaques describing history of lighthouse. As with most other natural treasures this site is bloated with sightseers. Come early or come late and I’m sure the experience will be better

This is an absolute must!

We stopped here and it was absolutely stunning! We came in the morning, so it was clear when we got there, but fog was rolling in. There’s tons of different places to get different views of the lighthouse and ocean as well as a museum and gift shop on site. Also a few food trucks for if you’re hungry. I would say to wear comfy shoes so you can hike the trails, as that’s something we didn’t do! 10/10 recommend!

Worth Visiting

While on a cruise stopping in Portland me and a few other people decided to rent bikes and go see the Portland Head Lighthouse. It was a very nice, reasonable ride with very good biking infrastructure. The lighthouse was crowded but very beautiful. There was a gift shop, a gelato stand, and a Cousin’s Maine Lobster truck which was very good. Overall it was a good experience and sending with visiting.

Beautiful peaceful

The lighthouse is closed for visitors but the grounds are open. You can walk around the park and along the ocean; see breaking waves and boats. There’s another lighthouse in distance. The old gun battery there for a bit of real history. Parking is $2 per hours. You can walk around, picnic, fly kite, run dogs. Overall relax!

Oldest and most beautiful headlight in the state of Maine. Great views from far away summer or winter. A must see when visiting.

Nothing to do after *checks notes* 2 p.m. on a weekday

By Sophie |

On visiting today at about 4:00, I was really disappointed – and equally shocked – to find that while the park is open until dusk, the museum is only open until 2:00 on weekdays! I don't think they do a good job explaining that on their website at all. So all I was able to do was walk a trail along a craggy beach, which apparently is thrilling for some people, but I'm the sort of person who wants to have something to focus on and learn about when I sightsee, so in the words of the great philosopher Shania Twain: that don't impress me much.

The lighthouse itself isn't open to the public at all, which is a pity, but I'm sure there's good reason for it (money and/or safety), so it doesn't upset me. A museum that's only open four hours a day, though... I get that things are different in the late-pandemic era, but at a bare minimum they need to do a better job messaging that on their website.

Wonderful daytime destination with sports parks, coastal trails and picnic areas.

We visited here after seeing the inaccessible 1874 twin lights at Cape Elizabeth, 6 miles to the south. After parking($4 for 2 hours using credit card) in the spacious Fort Williams lot, we walked 100 yards to this beautiful 1791 80’ lighthouse sitting on a point. Views here extended across the active Casco Bay to the 1883 77’ Ram Island Ledge Light Station. We saw a Keeper List(1789-1989) and Longfellow poem next to the house, and nearby, the remains of the 1917 Blair Battery with excellent signage on their 12-12” guns firing 1000 pound shells with an 8 mile range.
This is a wonderful daytime destination with sports parks, coastal trails, picnic areas and even the ruins of the 1959 Goddard Mansion to explore.

Spectacular and Oldest Lighthouse in the U.S.

By ThomasTCat |

We now know why this is the most photographed lighthouse in the country. The craggy coastline in front of the lighthouse and the picturesque lighthouse itself is so beautiful. It began operation in 1791 and was authorized by President George Washington, so it is very historic. You have to pay for parking and rest rooms are port-a-potties, but this is a must see sight. The trolley tour stops here so we went back a second time and during that visit there were military men in full uniform standing at attention at the top of the lighthouse as a flyover of six military planes passed overhead. What an amazing sight! Beautiful view of Casco Bay, it is located in Fort Williams Park and it has a museum and walking paths. This is definitely Maine at its best!

Amazing views of the lighthouse and Atlantic Ocean!

By Jemlnlx |

A must while visiting the Portland area.

Located within Fort Williams Park about 20 minutes south of Downtown Portland.

Lots of amazing views of the lighthouse and the Atlantic Ocean throughout the various path/walkways. Both views from the North and South along the coastline are great.

The Museum and gift shop are open from Memorial to Columbus Days, 10am – 4pm. The Museum fees are $2 for adults and $1 for children. Children under 6 are free.

There are a few large parking lots throughout the park…pay at the meter via credit card or Passport Parking App. There were lots of spaces available during out weekday visit in late August…but it was around 5pm-ish…so the museum and gift shop were already closed. I suspect the parking lots would be more crowded earlier in the day.

There are public restrooms as well as a Bite Into Maine Food Truck there at the park.

There are no fees (other than parking) to access the park itself.

Worth the drive

This location is beautiful. There are paths along the coast in both directions. As you look at the lighthouse from the parking lot, the path going to the right is more crowded so we went left and it was very nice. Both have great lighthouse views.

Definitely breathtaking!

As seen in all those pictures, the lighthouse and those rocky shores are real pretty (but believe me, no picture does justice to actually being there!). Going here will make you realize why this lighthouse always comes up front when talking about Portland tourism. The lighthouse is just one part of a bigger park. You could easily spend 2 hours here, more if you want to walk the trails around the park or go exploring the different ruins. There is metered parking (don't worry, they aren't expensive at all, just think that it stands as your entrance fee to the whole park), and one lot is closest to the lighthouse. The museum inside the lighthouse can already be at least 30 minutes to fully explore (at $2 admission, this is one of the most affordable museums I have ever visited and it's totally worth it so I really, really recommend it!).

Definitely be in walking shoes if you visit this place, for a full experience. And hopefully visit on a good-weather day for the best ambience! There was a gelato food truck over there - its gelato was very impressive. Give that one a try if you feel like you need a snack after all those sightseeing!

A must see Lighthouse!

Absolutely STUNNING lighthouse! My husband and I planned a 6 day New England trip and of course had to include a visit to a lighthouse! We chose the Portland Head Lighthouse because of its stunning views and rich history. It was a blustery day in early October with a sky full of chunky clouds and an ocean of restless waves. We were able to capture beautiful pictures and picked up a few items in the quaint little gift shop.

Gift shop worker is hostile and prejudiced

By Fiona M |

Visited the gift shop on 7/25 - there was a young lady working there who was incredibly rude. My daughter (who is vaccinated) chose to wear a face mask, when we went to pay for our goods the worker glared at my daughter, dropped my credit card on the counter and literally threw the bag of goods we'd bought at us. I really don't think a gift shop worker has the right to treat someone who has chosen to wear a mask with such hostility.
