you forget that you are just a mile away from Oakland

By Franziska M |

Redwood has some very steep and very beautiful trails. You can truly forget that you are just a mile outside of Oakland (if at all). Parking can be challenging on weekends around the Moon gate.

Great Oakland Redwoods

By williamkT8073RA |

Great Urban Park. The redwood forest is amazing to walk about. You can pay for parking to get closer to trail head. It seems some park on road for free and hike in. That is what I would do next time.

Redwood Regional Park: A pleasant alternative to Muir Woods NM

By Slipstream |

A winter visit to Redwood Regional Park offers some very unique experiences: nearly dry placid pools in creeks in summer are loud and full of life after a winter storm. The park even has a fish way to aid rainbow trout swim to the upper reaches of the creek. While the summer forest fragrance include a dusty redwood mix, a winter visit brings a sense of rejuvenation of the soil and plant life in the park. Hikers and runners alike can enjoy the following hike/run around the park - starting at the Skyline Staging area hike/run south to the Canyon Trail and back north along the Stream Trail. A detailed guide and map is available at the park entrance(s) as well as the park office. Most if not all of the first growth trees are long gone. The giant trees at or near the ridge line were so immense that they were used by clipper ships as a reference point to guide their way into San Francisco bay.

Big Park

By Thomas V |

Very big regional park, perfect for hiking and picnics. Some good views. Some ball fields. Very accessible to the urban area.

Recharge & Renew

By OwlMother2018 |

This is a true jewel. Take some time in the woods without the long drive to park & take a shuttle, then enjoy. The Park takes me out of the city for a while to recharge & renew my spirit. Too much space to feel crowded.

One of the East Bay’s Treasures!

By Hope m |

This park is magical! Visitors with any level of mobility can enjoy the variety of trails and be surrounded by ancient redwoods and great views of nature; just a few miles from urban stress. As a local, I have spent hundreds of hours hiking and biking on the park’s hilly trails getting a workout and a peaceful experience at the same time...

Nice Hiking

By Randy S |

A great place to hike or to practice photography. Be sure and take water and snacks but leave no trash!

Walking in Redwood Regional Park

By tribecca22018 |

Proud to say that this park is VERY SERE! And the lower one hiked or walks ONE heard nothing! And let alone you hardly see or hear 👂a word, JUST the sound of nature! Go GET away from society! PEACE

Coming to the Bay Area? DON'T MISS THIS!

By EBG143 |

People don't think of Oakland as a forested wonderland, but indeed, that's one of the best parts of Oakland. Easy hikes, harder hikes... it's all there. Redwood Regional Park trails are blessed with the magic of graceful ancient trees and shaded paths covered from branches reaching out across to each other. There's parking, port-a-potties, and the best escape from city life just minutes from a café.

fairyland green another world

By Rosa B |

You immediately leave the outside world behind. Trees in every direction. Get out and walk and enjoy the forest in the middle of a city.

It’s all about the redwoods.

By bikejones48 |

I started going to Redwood Regional Park (‘Redwood’) as a child for summer day camp. It’s really a magical little park that actually has lots of redwood trees, unlike a number of other regional parks which are populated with Australian eucalyptus, a non-native species, introduced in the 1800’s to replace many of the local species that were cleared or logged out. Huge mistake; they can’t be farmed and grow like crabgrass. The trails in Redwood are great for hiking and some can be challenging. Mountain biking, which I love to do, is limited to fire roads there but can make a nice option when linked to bike-friendly single track in the adjacent city of Oakland’s Joaquin Miller Park. Hikers can do a loop of Redwood by linking the Westridge and Eastridge trails. Stream Trail is also a nice option. For more challenging hikes, go for Golden Spike and French trails. I highly recommend using maps for both Redwood and Joaquin Miller parks. You can usually find Redwood maps at the Skyline entrance (caveat: while there is a good sized parking lot there, lots of people use it). Maps for Joaquin Miller are scarce but can be downloaded from Oakland’s website. Enjoy!

a jewel in the Oakland Hills

By BobCaTSB |

I am a regular hiker at this park, is part of the EBRPD and if you are visiting Oakland and just want to get away of the noise and find gorgeous Redwood Trees, visit Redwood Park, grab a map at the staging area and go from there, the park is dog friendly and well behaved dogs can go off leash as long as they are under voice control. Please pick up after yourself and leave no trace.

Discover new trails!

By BeastiePV |

We've been coming to the park for 20 years, but we've only now discovered the southern end of the Stream Trail. We'd been walking the Skyline Gate Staging Area trails, but we had never gone to the other end of the park off Redwood Road through Redwood Gate. The trail there that terminates at Trail's End is very acccomodating for people who need an easy no-hill walk or a mostly shaded walk. The trail features areas with picnic tables and also camping and restrooms. You will see that there are also several related trails of varied difficulty. Dogs allowed, on a 6' leash. There is a $5 charge for car entry at Redwood Gate, but you can also leave your car on the road outside the gate.

Lazy day in Oakland

By Benjamin S |

Beautiful redwood trees, a nice walk on a sunny warm day. Just minutes from downtown Oakland and a quick drive up the hill. You can only get this release in the Bay Area.

Hiking in the Shade

By Happy2FlyFree |

Nice place to go and have a picnic, bike ride, hike or just relax and enjoy the peaceful
sound of the birds.

Enjoy the setting

By 510dele |

Located on the hilltop in the city with endless trails. It is a quiet, outdoor space great for self, hiking, lots of dog walking, and the beauty one expects to experience in a park. It was cool and a little foggy on our trip which simply enhanced the experience.

Better than Muir Woods, without the crowds or people

By Curtis J |

Best redwood park in the bay. Very low key and without the horrible crowds that plague other parks in the bay! Many different trails and grills for stopping and cooking up some eats along the way

A moment with Redwoods is great way to escape the clutter in ones mind.

By Gerald H |

We had a friend drop us off and went for a 2 hr. walk. The trail was easy and well marked. We took an Uber back to our hotel downtown. Definitely worth a visit.

Peaceful

By Joé S |

This forest is a must to visit if you are in the Bay area. It is breathtaking, wonderful and a good place to find your inner peace of mind.

Easy walk

By frankolsendk |

Don't expect the biggest trees, but the park is easy to reach and it's more of a walk in the park than a hike. And there are so many eucalyptus trees that their smell is heavy in the air

Check out the beautiful scenery and hung out with friends

By Amanda H |

It was beautiful and had a great day with friends and family. I would recommend and one to make a trip when in area.

Really nice hike away from city

By Hags87 |

Took uber both ways to park. Hiked about 8 miles on
tres Sendas
Stream trail
Fern trail
West ridge trail
Robert's ridge trail
Tall Trees?

Nice morning away from work.

A must see.

By JOHN B |

This is one of the most beautiful areas of the entire East Bay. There is something magical about being surrounded by the redwood trees. Even thought the original trees were cut down over a century ago, these second growth trees are magnificent. I envy the native Indians that lived here for 10,000 years before the arrival of the Europeans. It must have looked like a paradise.

Great Hikes

By Junaid K |

Really nice hikes. easy to get away from crowds, pet friendly. Does get muddy after the rains. Early morning is our favorite time.

Great park, much to explore

By Eric M |

Aside from panoramic vistas, there are hiking trails, flat picnic areas, Cabot Space Center, an archery range and campground. Nice little getaway and the city is just below. Will return to explore again some time.

Safe, well marked, convenient

By DaveSov82 |

Very short drive from Oakland Airport, yet a world away from the city. Free admission when we went, and an easy to read trail map in the boxes by each trail head. The West Ridge Trail loop had good elevation gains but felt very safe for inexperienced hikers. Also had surprising views around each corner. Mid week we only saw two other hikers the entire stay. One tip, stay away from bridle trails... enough said.

Skyline drive has great views

By DavidG897 |

Went for a pleasant drive into the hills that were slightly cooler on an otherwise hot day. And the brief stroll around part of the park was relaxing

Great park and trails for hiking

By Banny9949 |

Went to see the famous redwoods and go for a hike. Did the Orchard trail which was a great somewhat steep hike to the top. My phone said it was 41 flights up and pretty quickly but easy soft dusty trail. Great views on the way up. Lots of different trails to choose from and different degrees of difficulty to simple ones and you can walk as far as you want. Parking was $5 but I noticed a lot of people parking outside the gate on the street to avoid the fee. Park ranger was pretty helpful with our questions. Right off a main highway and pretty easy to get to. Definitely recommend going.

A breath of fresh air

By MHRWHITE |

This park is really lovely. There walking trails are fabulous and the surrounds and serene and lovely. There are loads of picnic areas that are great and there are camping sites available too. Id love to return to do this too. HIGHLY RECOMMEND spending some time here.

Beautiful hike

By Kane M |

Beatiful area and a great hike. Parking could be difficult, but there are entry points with parking on the roadside. The redwoods are not every where, so plan ahead if that’s what you want to see.

There’s a portion in the valley on the southern side of the park.

One of the best Redwood park in the Bay Area.

By Patricia W |

This park is less well known but a hidden gem. If you don't like elevation, take Stream Trail. If you like some varieties, take French trail. Best for summer becaue it is 90% shaded. Just the signs are so artistic, we missed the first turn till later on we figured it out that was the sighn.

Not a substitute for a real Redwood forest

By MoccasinMike |

Its a pretty OK local park with OK parking and some paved trails - good for pushing a stroller or wheelchair. Lots of bathrooms and water available near the main trails. Dog leash rules are not enforced. Chance of getting your car broken into above average but much much less than if you were in SF. Redwood road is a nice drive near the park for those who would rather ride than hike. The trees / forest here is nice but its not exceptional like Muir Woods or Big trees.

So much to explore

By zenon368 |

I visit this park daily with my dog, and still haven't; been to every part of it. Anyone living in or visiting Oakland can find a lovely quiet spot in Redwood Park. Maintenance of trails can be somewhat brutalizing to environment, but overall a wonderful piece of nature.

Beautiful hike not far from parking

By smakkerr40 |

We made a pretty quick stop here since we had a flight to catch later that evening. We really wanted to see some redwoods and within a short distance we were not disappointed. I wish we had had time to take some longer trails, but alas, we saw some beautiful majestic trees. Nice bathrooms along the way. Clean. A little hard to find the turn off. Google Maps was not very exact....but we made our way there with a couple of stops to check our maps and directions. I had no idea the redwoods were so close. As a kid growing up in Auburn, California about an hour and a half away....I never would have imagined you could find redwoods in Oakland!

No need to drive to Marin County!

By Bassnev |

Redwoods right here in the east bay only 15 minutes from downtown Oakland. Awesome hiking and views of the bay and valley.

Great Place for Picnics

By Thomas V |

A popular picnic park, as well as a great place for a nature hike. This is a very large park in the hills area, right in the urbanized area, much used and loved.

Family, Friends, Fun!

By Anne G |

Several paths winding along with the stream take you through redwood groves and up to the Bay Ridge trail. The flat picnic area and play structure offer many spaces to enjoy family, friends and nature! Weekends can be crowded in the spring/summer but even then there are msny hiking options.

Some of the best hikes in Oakland

By Marcos Provenzano |

Amazing hikes!! A great place to stroll in the woods with our dogs and friends. Trails also connect to Joaquin Miller which also has amazing scenery.

An absolutely stunning spot. To view these giants

By Allan S |

This is awe inspiring just to be here. Everyone should come. Yo see the wonder if nature. To realize how long these monoliths have been growing for a long time. It is just a great spot to be in nature and. A top notch spot for pictures

Great place to hike/bike around in redwoods

By oakpit |

This is my favorite east bay park. Excellent hiking down into a valley that makes you feel like you are going to run into a dinosaur around the corner. Excellent shady hike in valley on hot days. Great views from Ridge trails. Great place to mouton bike. Link into city of oakland jaoquin miller park for truly great mt bike riding.
Redwoods are second growth so they are huge just not Muir woods huge. This is a hidden gem of oakland that makes it great.

Redwood regional Park

By SadieKH |

Many trails although the people on bikes can get aggressive.
Some trails dogs on lease and some on voice control. Several dog parks, 1 for large dogs and one for small dogs. Lots of area for a picnic.

Park Oakland

By Romeo G |

I am frank and I really liked this place very nice. With easy access on foot. By bike and car. Beautiful nature.

Beautiful Park

By Alec D |

If you're in Oakland or Berkeley and want to spend some time walking/hiking in the forest a visit to the Redwood Regional Park in Oakland is a great choice. The forest is mostly 2nd growth Redwoods and Bay trees. Lots of trails and some nice peek a boo views

Beautiful escape

By Wendy S |

Love this moderate hike. Can take dogs off leash and soak in the beauty of the redwoods. I work from home, so taking an hour and a half out of my day to see these beauties the peace and calm is a treasure. So close and accessible, but a million miles away...

Favorite Place to Hike!

By Soleil S |

This park is huge! A short drive from anywhere in Oakland. There are some redwoods here but you won’t see any of the big old growth giants, go down to Fenton for that, or all the way up the coast. Lots of hiking trails. Not crowded at all.

Great hikes in a peaceful setting

By lmarch22 |

I just moved to Oakland with my dog, and have been in search of great places where we can hike. Redwood Regional has quickly become one of my favorites. The park is well used, especially on weekends, but everyone is very friendly and courteous about sharing the trails. There are a huge number of trails, so you can return and easily take a different route. This is also a wonderful place to come if it's unseasonably warm, and you want to be shaded from the hot sun. I'd highly, highly recommend this park for day hikes. Bring your pup - it's very dog friendly!

Forest in the city!!

By Vijay_jandhyala |

Its a very good trail walk , has camping, picnic spots as well. It not far from oakland , very beautiful scenic place. Perfect in summer season.

Redwoods and Eucalyptus

By northernneckinn |

Perfect fragrance and outstanding visual pleasure from this trip through the woods just 20 minutes from Berkeley. Entered the Redwood Regional Park from Skyline Drive staging area and took the West Ridge trail, then connected to the Tres Sendas trail until we hit the Stream Trail to return to the staging area. Made a brief stop at the Girl's Camp in the meadow and enjoyed the peace and the flowers of spring! Took us about 90 minutes with stops. Most of the time we were alone and able to enjoy the serenity of the redwoods. The West Trail was very busy with professional dog walkers with their six dogs on leads and they were mostly friendly and kept their charges in order, cleaning up poop as they went along. I'm told that at the weekend these trails can be a bit of a zoo so mid week is a treat!

Miles and Miles of Smo;es

By Susan S |

I have a standing hiking "date on Thursday with a friend. We meet early in the morning and hike all day returning home late in the afternoon. We cherish these mini vacation but it is often hard to cobble together enough mileage to keep out all day.

Red wood Regional has so many trails that we can take and most of them meet and merge at various points. It allows us to head out and loop around taking different trails and add or subtract miles as need to fit our schedule. Each trail has different delights: waterfalls, overlooks, picnic areas, wooded fern trails and bright sunny ones. Each hike is different

Hike Here Every Day

By Calllie |

Beautiful regional park that is dog friendly and has tons of spectacular trails. The hikes down into the Redwood trees are fabulous and there are so many trails you can go for miles :-)

Very enjoyable and relaxing experience

By Nora B |

The park offers a variety of sites and beautiful views of the valley. For me, walking through the redwoods, even for a short distance, was the best.

Extraordinary place

By Ocalas |

This is a must see. The trails are fantastic and for all levels. The park is just magical and you just can’t help but just be an awe of Mother Nature, as always.

Hike

By Doug J |

This park is a hidden gem. Few people visit it.

There is all levels of hiking. 75% of the trails are in the Redwoods. As nice as Muir Woods. There is a play area within 1/2 a mile of the Redwood Rd entrance.

Like any other forest

By Catarina C |

We might have been totally of the target regarding expectations but our whole got quite disappointed regarding the size of the trees - we thought they would be much bigger.

Redwoods in the city

By Burbgal |

I like solo, I come with groups, and I drag visitors here. Then I have to drag them away.
Several trails, some wheelchair accessible.
Partaking on weekends is a bear. But there's a bus! See AC Transit for route.

Hiking trails galore.

By Rita R |

My favorite trail is the Stream Trail. You are only about 10 miles from city center and you are in a beautiful forest of redwood, laurels, and oaks. Once past the picnic areas, it is a serene walk along the creek. I great getaway from the bustle of the city.

Ambiance, Beauty and Exercise

By paulgN869NK |

When I lived on the Skyline Blvd in the Oakland hills my house was adjacent to an entrance to Redwood Regional. Working swing shifts allowed me to spend my mornings hiking in the park. I explored every trail and adapted my hikes to the amount of run/walking I wanted to do. I established several patterns that gave me options for 3, 6, 9 and 12 mile excursions. It's all there: the steep climb up the Mill Trail; the sunbaked up and down roll along the East Ridge; the shady, cool ambience of Stream Trail; the view from Redwood Peak. Get out and explore, you'll be glad you did.

A gorgeous park.

By celrae2015 |

An easy drive up into the hills is a picture perfect redwood forest. A great place to hike and have a picnic, bring water. Most of the trails are shaded, but on a summer day it is still hot. Enjoyed every minute.

This was awesome

By vonholsen |

Redwoods are amazing. Please go and see them. they make you feel so small and is absolutely beautiful.

My back yard park

By simonxweng |

We live very close to Redwood Regional Park. Only a few hundred yards away from my home are the Moon gate and Waterloo Gate. I go to park with my pet Griswald almost everyday. It is a huge park in East Bay. The nice weather and plentiful trees and bushes made this park a perfect place for visitors year round. There are many trails leading to nice scenery places. It is huge and you can easily go lost. There are bike routes and some trails allow dogs. There is no entrance fees and free parking at many gates. The only pity is that there is very few or no service stations. People shall prepare their own water and foods.

Hiking in the redwoods

By Sandra B |

A quick 10 minutes drive from downtown Oakland! $5 for parking gets you close to the Stream Trailhead, their easiest trail that begins easily and within a minute you're walking through a redwood grove. The trail ends where another trail begins its ascension into the hills. Will definitely come back when I visit my daughter again here in Oakland.

Redwoods and Ladybugs: What A Great Day!

By urbanguy |

This is a huge, multipurpose park that has hiking, biking, and equestrian trails. Aptly named, this 1830 acre park has the largest remaining natural stand of coastal redwoods in the East Bay area.

The purpose of our visit was to see some hibernating ladybugs (ladybird beetles) that I had read about, and maybe see some redwood trees. It turned out that our 2.3 mile walk to see the beetles took us through a spectacular redwood forest. I had read that there were some beetles on the French Trail; we did not find any there. However, we saw huge numbers on the Stream Trail, between the Girl's Camp and the Eucalyptus Trail. I believe that they're found in the park between late October and late February.

There are miles and miles of hiking/walking trails in the park. And, there is an 8+ mile bike trail that basically goes around the periphery of the park. What a treasure the people of the Oakland area have here. And, the trails are incredibly "dog friendly." In many places, dogs can be leash-free; in a few, dogs must be leashed.

Beautiful walk close to San Francisco

By BWM324 |

This place is absolutely beautiful. We are on a limited time frame so Muir Woods is not an option today. This place is a great walk, with water and restrooms, pet friendly, family friendly and breath taking views. There are nice redwood trees here, which was part of our check list of things to see. Make sure you are ready for a moderate hike, with the right walking shoes.

Serenity, a couple of stone throws away

By Yaw A |

Among the great attractions of the Bay Area is the proximity of so many lovely parks, allowing one to enter a world of peace and tranquility a short distance from the bustle of a downtown area. Redwood Regional Park is such a spot for me. It is just about a 10-minute drive from my home in Oakland, and yet I can get lost in the majestic Redwood trees, lose all connection to the (including cellular) to the chaos of modern life, and just take in the scenery. It does not compare in size to the grander, and more popular parks covering CA, but what it lacks in size and fame, it makes up for in convenience and intimacy. The trails are mostly easy to mildly/moderately difficult. There are no extreme heights to scale, and while one trail, the Western Ridge, begins on perhaps the sharpest incline, is has sufficient spots of leveling off to accommodate most hikers.

There isn't much in way of wildlife, although I've encountered the occasional fox and rattle snake. Human company is surprisingly rare on most of the trails, given the proximity of the park, although you will find larger gatherings of folks around the encampments on the floor of the park where there are benches and tables for picnics and stretches of plains to soak in the sun.

I usually enter the park at the Redwood Gate entrance. On weekends, there is a fee of $5 to enter and park within the gates of the park. Those who do not have the money, or perhaps do not feel like paying on the day, usually park on Redwood road. It is not uncommon to find long lines of cars parked off street close to the main entrance. But there are several other points of entry to the park, other than the main gate. It's just a matter of finding one of these staging places to park your car and access the Park from there.

Redwood Regional does not boast spectacular views of the Bay Area. But I love it for what it provides in terms of instant escape and immersion into nature from the bustle of the city. Well worth a visit.

I'm still in Oakland?

By jconsani |

Beautiful well mapped park right in Oakland... you will not believe you are still in the city of Oakland!

Sooooo Nice to Breathe that Redwoods Air!

By MJellick |

Last week I was in the Baja Desert, next week I will be in Beijing, China, but today, I was able to take a quick, unexpected trip to the Redwoods.

Incidentally enough, of my three days spent in the Bay Area, it may be that short walk through the Giants, which will remain with me the longest, running through the vein of my life.

Do yourself a favor, and go there and breathe. You will thank me later...

Beautiful trails!

By Jessamyn W |

This is a great place to go hiking and bring dogs! The trails are beautiful. They do charge for parking. There is also a dog fee of $2 (not per dog, just if you have dogs with you). There is also little to no cell service here.

Great park and quiet playground.

By Explore663569 |

While this park is quiet and picturesque, it is a tiny trek to the actual playground,so I wouldn’t recommend it for ones who have difficulty walking for more than five minutes. It’s perfect for young and older children however. The kids love racing to the playground (no swing) and love spotting the lizards. There is a really beautiful trail and pretty creek. No parking fee in the off season.

Easy to challenging hike

By mcyoga |

This park has something for everyone, regardless of your level of fitness or age. Walk, run, cycle. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the view!

Closest Redwoods to the Bay area

By daanddo |

If you like nature, like to hike and want to spend a day in nature, the Redwoods regional park is a greta place to do it. After a long confused uber ride (they took us to the wrong place) we thoroughly enjoyed hiking the trails of this large park. There are also biking trails, horseback riding trails, and other outdoor activities. I like to look at the plants and trees and the redwoods while not as large as those further north are still magnificent. It is sad to see the invasive Eucalyptus trees taking over so much of this habitat, in addition they are highly combustable.

Redwoods in Oakland?! Who knew?!

By Ramona X |

Awesome park for a day hike. Lots of dogs....most off leash. I do this hike with my daughter - trying to once a month. A lot of different trail choices. Make sure to GRAB A MAP at the entry kiosk from whichever entrance you start from. We usually start at the Skyline Staging area and go out on East Ridge trail. We did East to Canyon to Stream and back yesterday - roughly 6.5 miles. Lots of ladybugs in a small sunny section of the stream trail - in September! overall a beautiful hike. Beautiful redwoods. Wonderful foresty smells. A few mtn. & cross bikes on the East trail. We've gotten lucky with the parking - always seem to get a space in the lot.

If you're looking to have a picnic with small kids - check out the Canyon Meadow staging Area. We walked through here on our hike around yesterday. Lots of picnic benches, some BBQ areas and even a play area! It's fairly flat through here. All paved and with a short walk you can get from the parking lot to a beautiful little redwood grove! Very cool area for a little lunch with nature.

Oh and there is always plenty of other friendly hikers on these trails so if you feel lost - easy enough to get directions! Get out and hike! ♥

Beautiful Park

By Laura H |

This lovely park is a wonderful retreat in busy Oakland. It was quite a surprise to see such a place in Oakland. The big redwoods were cut down many years ago, but because redwood trees grow quickly, these 2nd and 3rd generation redwoods are tall enough to look impressive and give plenty of shade for hikers. We took a short hike to the old church. Many wildflowers were in bloom. We also saw swallowtail butterflies. There were many trails, plenty of parking, picnic tables, and restrooms.

Beautiful hiking through the redwoods

By Carl E |

An all time favorite of mine, hike through and under the redwoods on an easy trail that winds along a mountain stream. There are picnic tables under the towering redwood trees and the area is pet friendly, as long as the pets are leashed. On hot days the trail is cool. Off season the parking is free, in season there is a nominal charge.

Wonderful place to spend at least a day!!

By MichFS10 |

walking around the Red Woods was one of the most magical hikes that I have done, I spend a day with my friends and we really have fun, the place itself has something very special to offer.

Peaceful respite

By Josefina333 |

Redwood regional park is one of the many gems in the East Bay Regional Parks. Filled with clear paths of varying difficulty. Playgrounds for kids, clean bathrooms and miles and miles of trails within soaring redwood groves filled with fern-fall hillsides and varying vistas. It is easily accessible by car.

Phenomenal Sactuary minutes from the City

By Airaddict |

I visited this wonderful park on a whim while in Oakland and needing to blow a couple hours. You can easily spend and hour here or a whole day. Immediately after leaving my car and walking on one of the many trails I completely forgot that I was so close to a huge metropolis. It was as if I was in a completely different world. The towering Redwoods and eucalyptus are such a treat to have in such close proximity to the city. Their is also the Chabot Space and science Center that borders the park and another great place to spend time, especially if the weather outside isn't cooperating. I would highly recommend this to any person local or visiting that is looking for some exercise and wants to get out in nature. The trail system is great and well marked. The canopy creates shade thru out the day, so I would recommend layers that can shed, since the temperature in the woods is cooler than the temp in the city.

Uber out the park without cell service

By Quest40367350548 |

More accessible and requires less planning than Muir Woods if you'd like to see the redwoods. No cellphone service in the area but if you walk <10 minutes from the Canyon Meadows staging area to the park office down the road, you can access free wifi to book an Uber. From the park office, walk <5 minutes to the main road to meet your Uber as the driver will not know where you are. Remember the Uber driver won't have cell service in the area either.

Great escape from the city

By San Francisco Tour Co. |

Great place to go run. Go mid week and you can almost have it to yourself. Make sure you have you maps loaded on phone because there's all sorts of trails and not the best cell reception.

Oakland’s Outback

By SoupyT |

It’s wilderness within walking distance of a city. I love that you can stop mid trail, in a cool, dimly lit oasis of giant redwood’s, and have to remind yourself that only 20 minutes ago you parked your car under a blazing sun in 90 degree heat. And my dog loves that it’s off leash

Walk in the clouds, steps from the city

By Hpadxb |

Best views, friendly hikers , cool on a hot day. Why I love Oakland the diversity of the geography, who would think redwoods in Oakland. Great access for those with disabilities.

New Year's Day Hike

By MaishF |

I enjoyed my day here. I found a nice trail, it was fairly quiet. Not too many other people out as it was Jan 1st. I liked that I didn't have to travel far to get here. Nice place to be close to the city but get away from the city (for a few hours) at the same time.

Beautiful Nature Walk

Sometimes you just need to get outside and go for a walk. This park was very nice and quiet. The paved pathways were well maintained and clean of debris. You have the chance to be right next to large redwood trees and take in the glorious smell they emit. There are several places to picnic and enjoy the day. Be advised that if you have any trouble with the changes in altitude you will feel it as you drive almost straight up and then down and around the mountain to get to the entrance. Go slow and stay hydrated.

Great park, so close to home

By ducklein2016 |

The Redwood Regional Park is a maze of hiking trails through redwoods and dense foliage. The trails are well maintained and varied in their hiking difficulty. LOVE this park. I used to run here - now I walk, and love it just as much.

Tree Huggers Haven

By fdponce36 |

When in need to get away from the tyranny of concrete and steel of modern life, this is a welcome escape towards restoration and rejuvenation. Mother Nature’s created beautiful redwood trees all over this park and it’s the perfect antidote to all weary souls. There are trails of different levels and terrain. Stay for a quick jaunt or a couple of hours of cardio-inducing hike. A true gem.

Redwood regional Park

This is so close to home tha it is amazing. Also some of the last old growth redwoods in the area. Take your kids. Take your dog. We joined East Bay Regional Rarks & got a yearly pass - can park & walk the dog.

Magical place

By Cate F |

This is one of the most magical places in the Bay Area, and there is something for everyone.

Check the Regional Parks website for hikes and events.

There are 10,000s of ladybugs on the stream trail in January.

Even little kids enjoy the stream trail at the lower end of the park or the fire roads at the top. And avid hikers have plenty of paths to explore.

Only minutes from Oakland, you are in beautiful woodland.

Otherworldly playground next to the city.

By Larry W |

Hiking, running, mtn biking or simply breathing in the fresh air! Redwood Regional Park is an ideal place to visit. Most people begin their visit from either at Skyline Gate Trailhead or the Redwood Regional Park entrance (on Redwood Rd.), HOWEVER you can access this gem of a park from nearly a dozen different trailheads. Bring a water bottle, sunscreen, a hat and appropriate shoes.... you're all set!

The smell is intoxicating and the dappled lighting mystic.

By Eric K |

Love taking hikes here, the different shades of green and brown trails through the decomposing foliage. the temperature changes and little creeks that may appear during the rainy season, if you can call it that. love this place.

Peace

By Derek S |

It's so nice to have this beautiful forrest, complete with easy trails, awe-inspiring redwoods, some open glades, and a feeling of being so far from the cities, in this convenient spot to any east bay resident ( About 20 min from Walnut Creek - 10 min from Berkeley).
It is definitely one of those places that you know you should go to more often!
(The last time I went, there was a whole field trip with 10 yr old kids, and it was easy to just walk in a different direction and have a very peaceful stroll with a good friend.)
We are so lucky to live so close to such a beautiful place!

One of the best East Bay Regional Parks. Not to be missed. You forget major metropolitan areas are minutes away.

By Ali R |

What can I say? I think one of the best things about life in past 22 years has been living minutes away from this gem. I have walked and run thousands of miles here and still don't get tired of it. A stream which runs most of the year runs in the middle. As you look downstream, the cooler right hand slopes are covered by a magnificent second growth Redwood forest. On the warmer left side a typical coastal California oak and bay forest once you get above the redwoods at the bottom. The redwood forest in never hot. The oak and bay forest is perfect for cooler days, but really OK except for a few hottest days of the year. The 4 mile long French trail running along the right hand slope is great for running and hiking with numerous 3 to 10 mile loop options,

A great destination if not too much traffic.

By gil1770 |

The Park itself is really nice and family friendly. I'd only add that, on a weekend, the 2hr ride each way from the Bay area could be a consideration in a busy traffic situation as we did. So, leave early and don't be in a rush to come back.

Redwood + views - poison oak = hike

By Eric W |

The stream trail from the Skyline Gate entrance takes you to several groves of Redwoods along a stream bed. Tip - stay on the trail as there is a ton of poison oak just off of the trail. Several big elevation gains.

East Bay Gem

By NJBillUSA |

I walk my dogs twice a week in different parts of the Redwood Regional Park. Beautiful, peaceful, quiet, and great fun for dogs. Well maintained and welcoming, and the best part for us is that dogs are permitted to be off-leash (if they're "good dogs," which of course, they are). Water fountains, rest rooms, picnic areas -- all well maintained. Just a 10 minute drive from downtown Oakland.

Great place

By Chloe N |

A nice place for a quiet hike. Free parking, decently clearly marked trails. I climbed up to the Redwood Peak for a short hike.

Best park in Oakland!

By cvalentino |

Redwood regional park is a treasure. Wonderful hiking and biking trails and plenty of places for off leash bow wows. A little slice of heaven right in our own backyard. We go nearly every early morning to walk our dog and have become great friends with a lovely group of regulars dedicated to fresh air and exercise. Fantastic way to start my day!

A respite in the redwoods

By yahdiegal |

My 19 year old daughter and I love to hike. We celebrate big birthdays with hikes and we have been hiking together since she was an infant on my back. I hadn't checked out Joaquin Miller Park despite having lived in Oakland for more than a decade and this was a spontaneous choice. The trails are beautiful and within a few minutes you forget that the city even exists. Tall redwoods frame narrow trails that twist and turn without being too demanding. You may have to share the trail with mountain bikers but they are polite. There are spots where you are at the base of tall trees and others where you can see the tops of tall trees. I highly recommend this park for a quick respite of zen-like serenity and calm. There are routes of various distances and though we got a little lost (definitely take a map from the trailhead), we did a 4k loop with ease. Hiking boots would help with stability but sneakers are fine, and any level of fitness can enjoy these trails.

Redwood Regional Park

By Betsy S |

There is nothing like hiking the trails in Redwood Regional Park. It's a beautiful area for families to picnic, hikers to hike the many trails, cyclists and horseback riding.

Oakland's Redwood Regional Park

By William H |

Very few people realize that Oakland's hills were once filled with Redwood trees! Many were used during the building of Oakland, back in the late 1800s.
However, immediately following the 1906 Earthquake and Fire in SF, wholesale harvesting of the trees was in order.
When you drive up there, it's like you're entering a far away different world.

Big Trees

By OaktownMusings |

One of the most revered Redwoods in the area. There's a marker in Robert's Park showing where the tallest tree used to be and used by navigators out in the SF Bay. The only draw back is that it's best during the week because during the weekends, the mountain bikers take over and it's rather unpleasant (especially with dusty trail conditions). The highlight is that there are choices for inclines or flats. (I won't be overtly sharing my favorite trail!)

Amazing hikes - bring your dog!

By Deb L |

Part of East Bay Regional Parks, Redwood is a beauty. There are many hiking trails, some where you can bring your dog. People are friendly; bring plenty of water and small snacks for your hike or even a picnic.

Redwoods

By sttly |

This is a great place to go through the redwoods and other wooded areas. There are many trails and they are well marked. It is a beautiful area. Most of the trails are easy but some are more difficult.

Great Park For All Levels

By ProfDRS98 |

You can do short, level walks of 1.5-2 miles round trip from the main staging area on Skyline Blvd (East & West Ridge trails) or choose much longer hikes and challenging hills. Trail maps online. Dogs off leash ok on trails. Abuts other Regional parks to the North and East.

Amazing Redwood trees

By Kai H |

Relax and enjoy waliking in the forest and see those giant redwood trees. Recommend to visit there during the Summer time.

Beautiful place for all ages

By milpitan |

The most recent trip to this always be loved place was taking an elderly world traveler. This place has been in her map years ago. Finally made it here, she completes another one most wanted place to visit. Had a great time there as the place is quiet yet one can really feel being among all living things around the beautiful redwood trees. The loop trail is relatively short for young children to 80 years old or over. Well managed park and nice staff.

Hike in the Redwoods

Go for the Stream Trail from the main entrance. Nice level walk in the shade of many wonderful Redwoods. Most weekdays the parking is free.

Great trails

By NYY07 |

The Redwood Regional Park is located on Skyline Drive in Oakland. It contains several types of trails with varying degrees of elevation change. There are a couple of easy (relatively flat) trails that have a woodsy feel and make for an enjoyable walk with nice views.

Nature comes alive

By John L |

This park offers a chance to see Redwoods without the crowds. There are meadows, streams as well as a variety of trees. The birds will sing you a melody. The paths are paved and mostly level. Restroom facilities are available.

Amazing views of THE CITY; below average hikng. If you want a good hike in Sequoia's go to pescadero or marin.

Absolute favorite place for solitude in the city

By WaywardWander9 |

Not being from the area, it is amazing to me that this huge park is right in the middle of Oakland and so close to San Francisco, we always go to take a hike here. Even in the summer it is very shaded with plenty of trees and very peaceful. Lots of trails and picnic benches as well as restrooms. There are many gates where you can enter, our favorite is Redwood gate. Go check It out!

Pretty Redwoods close to the big city!

By ExpoNationals |

Want to escape from the city, but don't want to travel too far? Well if you live in the East Bay, Redwood Regional Park is a great place to go.

For the longest time, I never knew this place existed. Hard to believe that such beautiful redwood trees could be so close to the big city.

There are many trails ranging from easy to moderate to strenuous. Great for all levels. Nothing beats exercising among Mother Nature's lovely creations.

Highly recommend visiting Redwood Regional Park!

GreAt for hikes rain or shine

By 575sealion |

Love this place! When it rains small waterfalls. Lots of trails, dogs on leash near creek. Great in summer too! Stays cool under redwoods.

Redwood park

By Tourist&tat |

If you go there, try to go by car and not with the organized daily trip.We booked one for 95 dollars and it was a bus dropping us to the redwood with the entrance included but they only gave us 1 hour and a half and we couldn´t enjoy the woods. You need to spend at least 3 hours to appreciate it!

Nice hikes

By Roary |

Having visited the SF Bay area so many times, I’ve never visited any redwood forests yet, so for my recent solo trip, I decided I had to visit one. I’m glad I did. It was the perfect weather where it warm but not too hot. Trails are well kept and very popular with other hikers and dog owners. I got to see my share of redwood trees and they are impressive to see.

My only mistake? I took a rideshare vehicle to get to one of the main gates. As I hiked in, I didn’t think I would lose complete phone reception once I reached one of smaller parking lots deeper in the park so I spent an extra hour to get myself to an area with good enough reception to catch a ride back home! Still a nice visit!

A great way to kill a few hours and just a short drive outside of the city. Parking is minimal, so plan on a hike just to get to the entrance.

Great trails

By FierceSappho |

We wanted to get out for a light walk and this was perfect. The trail was paved at some areas and easy to traverse. At some points we couldn't see anyone around. Very relaxing.

We drove through the area in a motor home without any problems.

Hiking through the redwoods

By Justin R |

While living in Oakland, I went to Redwood Park at least weekly. Hiking the dog off leash through the deep redwoods was always a day well spent. Ferns, redwoods, views, cool shade on a hot day... this park has it all! I feel like all the tourists in Muir Woods were driving a lot of unnecessary miles when they could have just come to Oakland. We moved to Chicago and this is what I miss.

A beautiful walk

By Andy |

The terrain and the views are remarkably varied, from prairie to woods, from mountains to the Bay. We had never been to this park and were happy we chose to visit.

Lovely 2 hour hike for the family

By sofiteme |

A small gem in the midst of busy town. The redwood component is rather small. The park is nevertheless lovely to hike. There are a few trails to choose from.

Local redwoods , a few minutes from the bay area

By Angela A |

This is a beautiful natural park minutes from Oakland and Castro Valley. I have been coming to this park for years.
The trails are easy, good parking, and lovely scenery. I love the smells here.

Lovely Park in Oakland

By Lily G |

Lovely park in Oakland. The park is well maintained and a small treasure. The paths are shaded and meander pleasantly through the park. There are good facilities, bathrooms, water fountains and a playground. Smaller than Muir Woods, but easier to get to from Oakland and Berkley. A great way to spend an afternoon.

What makes Oakland so AWESOME are places like this... the forest is 10 minutes across town

By McHibernia |

Great place to go hike or chill. There is even and archery range and an observatory in the woods nearby. Lots of trees and serenity

Great Place for a hike, yet so close to the city

By adrianbaker2016 |

We wanted to see some Redwoods but had heard that Muir Woods tends to get very busy. We also wanted a short hike without travelling very far from Berkeley.

We found all we wanted in the Redwood regional park. There appear to be several well marked trails, plenty of parking and, of course the Redwoods.

The park is less than 5 minutes drive from the suburbs yet once you are amongst the trees you are unaware of the nearby human habitation. Despite this the paths were quiet (we were there on a Friday) and we enjoyed a five mile hike on varied ground.

One of the best parks in Oakland.

By Amber S |

The park reminds me a lot of Muir Woods, but with better trails and is dog friendly!
Also a good place for a picnic.

One of the Bayarea hidden Treasesure

By drbanks2 |

Seeing is believing, just pick up and go explore! For kids (toddlers) try the Tilden Park and Little Farm.

A little bit of Redwood Paradise

By Maeve R |

Free parking during the week, and only $5 on weekends. Sure the redwoods are only 2nd generation and not as huge as Muir Woods, but is has multiple hiking trails, BBQ and picnic areas and an open playing field for kids. There are some main toilets and a few on the trails. My favorites are Stream, French, Bridle path, Fern, Chown and Tres Sendas trails. So many wonderful combinations with redwoods, ferns, eucalyptus and madrones as you hike the trails. This is my go to hiking spot when it's hot outside, I can manage a 9 mile hike almost entirely in the shade.
Best part, its so close to Berkeley and Oakland.
It's a little spot of paradise with Redwoods.

One note, summer weekends can be difficult to find parking, so go early.

Zen moments in the middle of Redwoods

By Megan N |

I have been hiking this park since 2016, this place is of one of the jewels of Alameda county, with multiple loops such as DUNN loop, French Trail (this takes longer but well worth it), Serpentine loop and .... The hike is Med- you will walk through majestic redwoods and will get nice views of Oakland Bay in front of you. Especially during the summer the walk through cool paths in between Redwoods is absolutely exhilarating.

For those new to trails, I definitely suggest that you take the map available at Richard Trudeau Center. Once during the fall or winter, I got carried away and I hit the dark. Thankfully I had my flashlight with me and got a great view of illuminating bay as well.

A hidden gem outside the city of Oakland!

By cynthia V |

A nice trail shared by bikes and walkers. Beautiful trees- and if you don't have the time to get to Point Reyes but need some nature-it's the place to go!

Beautiful Park!

By Patty J |

We thoroughly enjoyed this park. The trails were great. We enjoyed seeing the huge redwoods and not dealing with large crowds. It was peaceful and a great way to spend a few hours. I highly recommend visiting!

Need to go further north

By Edmund P |

Visiting the Bay Area and wanted to see the famous redwood forests, so went to the Redwood regional park, because it was so conveniently located. We hiked the golden spike trail to an elevation of around 800 feet. It was an enjoyable and somewhat challenging hike, but we were hoping to see giant redwoods... we did not.. even after hiking for over an hour... I guess we need to go further north.

Great park to picnics among California coastal redwoods

By Paul |

Part of the great East Bay regional park system. This place has facilities for group picnics and other family activities. There is a small fee to park here so if that’s a problem go to Joaquin Miller park around the corner. The fee goes to park maintenance so it’s put to good use. Be careful about parking on the side of the road to access the east bay parks because car break ins are very common there.

Great trails

By Connie L |

Easily walkable trails through beautiful forests. There were lots of options to choose from in terms of terrain, something for everyone. Lots of dogs as well.

Great park in midst of Oakland!

By BKAnders |

My wife and I took a pleasant hike here in the afternoon. The trail was shaded and well-maintained.
It was an easy drive to the park, which also provided nice views of the city.

Nice hiking trails

By Kathyfm1 |

A nice selection of hiking trails and nice to place to see some of the less mature Redwoods without having to drive too far.

Nice hike

By Mike M |

Nice park for hiking. Plenty of scenery. Some paths are paved, some stone, some rugged. Some nice elevation changes.

Dogs on leash friendly trails

By Kathleen Y |

One of the few beautiful areas you can bring your dog. The regional park offers a variety trails with easy to moderate hiking depending on what trail you choose. When it’s really hot you can find shade along dry stream beds. You can also get great views of Alameda and Contra Costa if you choose the ridge trails. One concern is the occasional biker who is not as considerate as most and there can be collisions with dogs and hikers

Best part of California

By Quackalita |

Gorgeous hiking trails, swimming pool, and the best part is the outdoor archery range & trails lovingly maintained by the Redwood Bowmen.

Hidden gem!

By Sandra L |

Tucked away in the hills of Oakland is the Redwood Regional Park. Is it a Muir Woods? No, but it is a hidden gem. Smaller and less crowded and the trees are fresh from the 1850's when they were last cut. Nice fresh smells from the redwood trees as you walk through and many eucalyptus trees, as well.

Beautiful walks for all fitness levels

By aloap |

The beauty of this park is that you can walk from one type of vegetation to another to another in the space of an hour -- you can start in the redwoods, pass through sections with pine trees, then switch to an environment of manzanitas and bay laurels before diving back into the towering shade of the redwoods. Some trails go along a stream (dry most of the time); some go down into the valley and then back up, some are more level. My favorite loop is Tres Sendas to Stream Trail to West Ridge Trail. The shady areas/trails are cooler and are pretty wide so there is less danger of poison oak. The central recreation area has a pool and a number of picnic areas but it always feels too crowded to me, I tend to stay away.

Wonderful forest adventure through 100 year old redwoods

By Richard D |

Sun dappling through the trees, forest canopy that dwarfs you, the magic and majesty of this redwood grove will not fade easily from memory. A day adventure...

friendly dog park where dogs meet dogs

By Emily T |

Redwood park has many different trails to suit hikers of different interests to explore around. East Ridge is easy to relatively wide and to walk. West Ridge is a little more windy and narrower and kind of runs parallel to Skyline Blvd. It is a great off-leash dog park.

So close, but feels far away

By 510Jenster |

Growing up in Oakland, you dont realize that up the street is a redwood forest. It’s still a 5 minute drive from my house, and I love going to RRP with my kids, or solo to hike, walk and take in the trees. At this time of year there are gob-loads of ladybugs, super fun for kids to find. Also at RRP are Roberts Park and Chabot Space and Science Center. Great for families.

A close-by place to hike, enjoy the scenery, and picnic. Dog friendly!

By Dustin F |

The only draw back on this location is that it is tough to get to. Once you start heading up the hills the GPS starts acting wonky and you are driving through tight residential streets. But once you arrive you are greeted with beauty. Walk a few yards onto a hiking path and untether your dog to roam and play. Loads of vistas to lay a sheet down and enjoy lunch.

Heaven inside the city

By gene b c |

When I was in the boy scouts we camped there often. I remember one morning bobcat tracks were around our campfire.
Went down memory lane last year while back in Oakland, took a drive up to skyline and down into the park. Still magical and a lot closer than Muir Woods..Lots of trails and plants and animals. A great place to spend some quiet time.

Redwoods in the East Bay

By Geoffrey R |

Redwood Regional Park is one of a series of East Bay parks that separates the urban East Bay from the suburban East Bay. These parks start in the north with Wildcat Canyon flow through Tilden in Berkeley and Redwood Regional Park in the south beyond the southern part of Oakland. There is little of the original old growth Redwoods that weren’t cut down during the Gold Rush or following the 1906 SF earthquake, when there was a mass exodus from the destroyed City to the East Bay. Still one can hike through the redwoods for miles looking up at the sky through one of the tallest species of trees on the planet. And if off planet experiences attract you, there is the recently built Chabot Space and Science in the park: don’t miss it and don’t miss the other redwood parks in the Bay Area closer to the cooler Pacific, like Big Basin!

Beautiful trees, spectacular views

By BaffledbyOtherReview |

We did a short hike in the woods. The trail is well marked and pretty flat. The trees look and smell wonderful. Occasionally you get glimpses of an incredible view across the bay. Loved it.

Yes, you can hike in the redwoods in Oakland. It's less than fifteen minutes from Lake Merritt by car to the entrance.

By sullidesk |

You don't have to drive north to the Oregon border or take the long and winding and very touristy road to Muir Woods to see the Redwoods. Oakland is an amazing city. Start in one of the great neighborhoods, downtown or Rockridge or Elmwood and grab a lyft for less than $8/each way to the entrance at Skyline Gate to Redwood Regional Park. You can take an easy hike on the east or west ridge trail or drop down to the Stream Trail for a 2-3 hour hike. This is where redwood trees were logged, but that was a long time ago so the second growth trees are magnificent. It is very dog friendly, too, but bring a leash for some protected areas. Afterwards, head down to Jack London Square to Revolution or College Ave to Provisions for a great class of local or imported beer and fabulous food. The food scene in Oakland is as good, maybe better than SF. If it is the first Friday of the month, head downtown starting at Lukas Taproom for the most sensational art gallery open studio and street party.

Prize jewel of Oakland

By CindyOak |

Here you can walk among redwood trees without driving to Marin. Miles and miles of trails, many of them steep. Some trails allow horses, some allow bikes, some allow dogs off leash. If you don't like those things maybe go to one of the many places that have tons of rules (like every other park around). Bring a map with you - you can get lost. I've hiked every trail in this park, it is my favorite part of living in Oakland, walking my dogs in the beautiful trees.

The Magestic Redwoods

By phyllisd520 |

My husband and I hiked the Redwoods on a Saturday morning. To look at the height and ages of these mighty trees puts your life in perspective. It helps admiring the diversity in creation.

Awesome Begginer Experience

By TravelNurse123 |

My husband and I decided to hike here based on the reviews. We were not disappointed. We hiked the Bridle,Stream,Orchard,Chown, and French. The Chown was primarily uphill but had the best forest views! We passed three restroom areas during this hike. It took us just under 2 hours. We possibly could have finished sooner. We strolled in some areas to take in the scenery. There are multiple parking/staging areas that free of charge. We opted to pay the $5.00 to park inside the park due to safety. For us , the peace of mind was well worth it. The best part of our hike is that it was shaded by trees with consistent cool breezes a majority of the time.I would definitely recommend to hikers of all levels.

Limited time only - 10 Downed Trees Phillips Loop natural obstacle course

By Jesper J |

Recent February storms have created a unique opportunity for young and old to experience the strength of nature.

1) Start at Redwood Regional Park - Skyline Gate
2) Take the left trail called East Ridge Trail, walk for 0.2 mile (3 min) then take a right down Philips Loop. Make sure to bring common sense as your pass the sign saying the trail is closed as this only applies to bicycles and horses
3) The next mile of trail will be littered with downed trees completely blocking the trail. Navigate below, around and above each tree in an obstacle course created by nature.
4) After 2/3 mile you will meet the Eucalyptus Trail where you go uphill for an easy return path, or continue another 1/3 mile for the most challenging tree (see photo)

Away from it all, almost

Great to see the redwoods. We were there on a weekday when most of the tourists were not. There were three school trips doing a tour and that was good (do not envy those teachers). Plenty of parking on the day but could be different at weekends.

Beautiful Bay Area Park

By Selene W |

This park has several great trails for hiking, biking, running, and walking casually. There are several benches along some of the trails you can sit at and enjoy the view. You can also find picnic tables at some trailheads. I often use the trails to train for backpacking in the sierras. The elevation gain is only around 500-600 feet on some hikes, but the grading can be steep in spots. The park offers small topographical maps, which is a good way to plan out how many miles you want to walk or how much elevation you want to climb. The park itself is lush with various flowering plants and magestic redwood trees. I've seen lots of wildlife, including beautiful little ringneck snakes, which live on the rocky mountainsides. I love having this gem so close to city life.

Great for a day of hiking. Lots of different trails with varied lengths. Most of the trails have some up and down walking so wear good shoes if you plan to take a long walk.
We only saw 1 Grove of redwoods on our walk. It's very peaceful, we only ran into other walkers a couple of times in the 2 hours we were walking. It's also a great place for dog walkers.

Awesome afternoon away from the city!

By redneon98 |

I had an afternoon in the East Bay while on a work trip, everyone says go into "The City" for some fun, but being a city gal I wanted some outdoor California adventure. With the reservation system and construction to get to Muir woods I found this great alternative from some locals.

I took the East Ridge Trail and Phillips loop for a quick run and then enjoyed a stroll on West ridge trail to get to a hike down Tres Sendas and back up the French trail. East and West ridge trails were very accessible while French, Tres Sendas, and Phillips Loop were more varied terrain with trip spots. It was a nice break from the ordinary!

This park is very accessible from both the Oakland side off of Skyline Drive and from Moraga or Oakland on Redwood Road. The Skyline access offers good hikes with views, but the Redwood Road access includes a playground and picnic area as well as some beautiful hikes through the redwoods. If you live in the Bay Area and haven't been to this park, you should come.

Lots of Ladybugs & Mushrooms

By Kristi B |

Beautiful hike. We parked at the Skyline Gate Staging lot (the lot gets full - there is some street parking). We took the trail to the left near the restrooms and crossed over after a while to get on the Stream Trail. This allowed us to see all the mushrooms. If going for the ladybugs, you would take the trail on the right from the parking lot - the Stream Trail. Walk down until you get to the Prince Trail. There was a large sign where the lady bugs were located. SO MANY LADYBUGS!!! Hike is pretty flat minus the hill that leads to the parking lot on your way back. Lots of dogs & children - highly recommend!

Redwoods and Bay trees

Very nice walking trails amidst the young redwood (still tall) and the wonderful uplifting scent of the bay leaf trees all over. Lovely place to walk your leashed doggie too.

A local family park good for out of town visitors

By Don04221958 |

This park is probably the easiest set of redwoods to visit from the Oakland San Leandro area. It is also a great family park to do a BBQ or play on the lawn. It is a mix of both and is adjacent to some open California grasslands too.

I ususally suggest the lower entrance, which a drive down from Skyline Drive to the south east side coming down Redwood Ave. It is kind of hard to miss the left entrance. In summer the park charges a small fee.

That bottom entrance is where the picknic infrastructure is and where one can hike up into the more open grasslands too. There are good restrooms, grills, parking, etc. usually zero cell service.

This is the section where my son's school holds an end of year picnic and on weekends there are lots of families. It is large and even when there are groups, it does not ever feel crowed. (but one could be surprised)

This is also where I bring a visitor from out of town to go for a mellow walk and have a long talk and enjoy our local nature.

From the bottom entrance one can, and many do, hike up the Creek Trail.

There are some other redwoods nearby and some docent materials.

It is along this trail one finds very nice and large redwood groves. Bike riding is allowed for the first mile or so and one can lock the bike and continue on foot. If you continue the whole hike up to the top, you get to the other Skyline entrance and will find yourself back in the afluent suburbia that owns most of the Oakland hills. The trail is very easy and one does not need to be a super hiker to make it. The groves and clearings are very nice, and if someone has never seen redwoods before, this would be a good introduction.

There are other hikes off to the sides of the Creek Trail that are more of a steep climb. The trees are nice and the walks are a good work out. Most of the trails will get you to the top entrance. Want an easy family excursion? Drop the group off at the top and have someone drive the car around to the bottom.

The one detraction at this site is dog owners who decide that the leash law does not apply to them or their dog. If you are hiking with small children, be prepared to have a large dog run up to them at the discretion of the dog owner or the dog. When my boys were small, I would take them, but keep them close. I have never been there in all the 20 odd years where there was not at least one dog owner with their dog running ahead of them off leash. This is especially true near the top entrance where I think some neighbors have decided that this public park is their dog run.

See the Giant Trees!

By Lafayette Resident |

Old, tall and beautiful- redwood trees of Redwood Regional Park. Enjoy the peace and calm of the groves of trees, or take a longer hike through the hills and grasslands. There's enough wildlife to keep a naturalist busy all day.

Numerous trails, pretty views.

By Jvolger |

There are lots of trails to choose from, be sure to check the weather before heading out. If it has recently rained the trails get extremely muddy. Some trails are shared with horses so there is horse poop every where.

Amazing

By KillerB33 |

A wonderful experience. So easy to get to and you can hike as far as you want at your own speed. So beautiful and awe-inspiring (and quiet). Don't forget mosquito repellant!

Peaceful Stroll in the Redwoods.

By John S |

Hiked the West Ridge Trail with a hiking group - easy trail with only minor ups and downs. Park has two other main trails, plus side trails which can give hikers an optional challenge, but main trails are easy and a great change from nearby civilization.

Sweet, sweet Forest walk

By Charles B |

This is my favorite East Bay hike. Have been walking and exploring the Redwoods Park for 25 years and am always enthralled. For years I would hike at sunrise on the lesser and more challenging trails observing wild life without encountering another human. The main path is easy to moderate and suitable for people with walking challenges. It follows a delightful steam. The area not far from the parking area is favored by families with young children. During the week there is no entrance fee (not sure about the summer months).

What a great place

By ethed_12 |

This is a great park for all types of walkers, some easy flat trails and some more challenging climbs. Scenery is stunning especially when you get off the flat trails and start to climb. Many water fountains and places for the children to play. Fully recommend this park.

Breathtaking, easy to access.

By alanaaxley |

A really easy bit of the redwood forest to get to, I don't know how to talk up skyscraper trees but it truly is an amazing sight to behold. Spend a few hours, enjoy the fresh air.

Relax, picnic & go for a walk

Great park to relax, picnic & take a short walk or long hike. You can make it a short trip or spend the whole day. The park is very large with wonderful hiking trails.

awesome redwood inside the city

It is so easily accessible, a short drive off highway 13. Views from skyline is impressive. The grove of redwood is amazing. Simply perfect for a half day hike without having to drive far from the city.

Ladybug convergence season on French Trail October - February

By Jesper J |

The annual Labybug season in Redwood Regional Park is from October to February, when Lady bugs of the species "Hippodamia convergence" are in fact like their name indicates converging to hibernate and procreate.

I like to observe the ladybugs are on the French Trail between West Ridge Trail and Tres Sendas. Somewhere near this location: 37.824022, -122.176897

Have You Seen Redwoods ?

By J L J |

The California Redwoods are beautiful and majestic and found in abundance at Redwood Park. As you wind your way upward by car or trail, you'll see the magnificent and expansive view of the Bay Area. There is a multitude of picnic and resting areas. Reserve early for any special events. This park might challenge allergy sufferers because of abundant foliage.

A gem hidden away above the stress of the city.

By roseyann2 |

My husband's father used to drive cattle through parts of what is now Redwood Park. Later he drove a milk delivery truck on the road that is now a walking path through the park
When our children were small, 45 or so years ago, we loved to spend an evening in the park picnicking and hiking the trails. It was quiet and serene and the children loved it as much as we did.
Nowadays we walk the less challenging trails in Redwood Park with our dog and sometimes a grandchild or two. It is still the same place of peace and tranquility. The changes have been only to preserve it for future generations. We count ourselves fortunate to have lived most of our lives minutes away from this beautiful park.

Great place to hike in Oakland

We found this park online and went for a short hike on a beautiful December day! The views of SF bay were amazing. The trails have a gentle incline and there is also a prairie trail that is beautiful!

Redwoods ... in Oakland!

By ErikWestby |

I'd lived in San Francisco for 12 years and rarely ventured across the bridge to the East Bay, except for work. Then I moved to Oakland and quickly discovered the Oakland/Berkeley hills. Redwood Park is amazing ... a great place to hike through the big trees without having to drive up or down the coast. I never knew!! But once I did, I took my boys there for hikes quite often. Bring a picnic and stay a while. Bring your dog!! Great for sunny days because it's cool under the canopy, but also GORGEOUS in the fog.

Important Park in the Hills

By Thomas V |

Go up in the hills, just a little bit, and you will find this big park, a great place for a picnic, which is what we did, or for taking a long hike. A great resource.

Great park for hiking among redwoods

By Michael K |

We came on a Saturday afernoon and there were still many parking spaces available, some of course were a little farther away. The place was clean and well maintained with many families cooking BBQ at the various grills set up near picnic tables close to the parking lot. There were many trails to choose from. We hiked for an hour on the Stream Trail before turning back. This is an easy trail that is mostly flat with shades provided by redwood trees. Even in the afternoon, it was cool and very comfortable. Unfortunately due to drought, the stream had been reduced to puddles of water here and there but otherwise dry. Note that this is not an old growth forest. Most of the trees are relatively young. There is no tallest tree to boast of.

Stroll or Strenuous

By Adam H |

Quite a few trails snake this intimate valley with old redwoods. Choose between a relatively flat jaunt through meadows and picnic areas, or try a steeper hill that takes you through ferny paths and scenic views. Please use the main parking lot and pay the minimal fee to support your local park! Pet fee is $2 additional dollars if your furry friend also likes mountain air. Stop by Sparky's burgers for an after hike snack.

Great trails dog friendly trails, lots of variety

By DanielleML |

I wish I lived closer to this park! There were tons of great trails! The park is large with multiple entrances, so you might want to look it up online a bit first and pick which area you want to start at.

We started off at the skyline entrance and hiked down the stream trail (which runs across the park) a ways. It is fairly steep at this location, but a nice mix of vegetation. Just one small stand of redwoods in the part we walked here.

Next we drove to the main gate, Redwood gate. We opted to pay the $5 and $2 per dog to be able to park in the park because we like supporting local parks. Here we took the opposite end of the stream trail, which really felt more park like with grass and picnic areas around. This is an easy flat trail that would be stroller or wheelchair accessible. The redwoods from this trail were magnificent, but due to the set up it isn't quite the same lost in nature feel.

Finally we looped up and took the bridal veil trail, which was probably my favorite of the day. Narrow trail right up against ferns and redwoods -- definitely forget all about everything but the beauty of the scenery here. This trail had a lot of tree roots and rocks in the path, so would likely not be good for someone who trips easily or struggles with balance (or little kids), and it is narrow enough even the dog and I did not fit side by side, but it is a wonderful trail!

Overall a beautiful area and I love how dog friendly it is! Definitely worth a visit.

Wonderful redwoods!

By Jocelyn W |

Love this place especially when it is hot outside. Inside the redwoods remains cool. There is enough variety though for those who like hiking up hills, but my favorite is the stream trail. Some may also appreciate hiking near the stream trail in the winter and see the water levels rise

Always enjoy visiting the Redwood Forest. Kids always tranquil and Serene. I always feel like I stepped into another time zone when I cross the Redwood curtain.

Urban Forest

By CJGregory2016 |

It's hard to imagine that a forest like this could exist within urban limits, but it does. Miles of wild redwood groves, similar to the famous Muir Woods, that are stunning and easily accessible. Well worth a visit.

Amazing regional park

By David E |

Great choice of trails for hiking or biking (mountain bikes recommended). Wide trails with a choice of level or very strenuous up and down hiking. The middle (Stream) trail is an oasis that is easily reached, but be prepared for an uphill hike back to the parking lot. You can be in the shelter of huge redwood trees, with little sun in sight, even on warm bright days. A gem.

Wilderness in the City

By KMM655 |

I've been hiking here for 10 years, and it's an amazing park. 15 minutes from downtown, and there are miles and miles of wilderness. Different trails, some good on rainy days, some good on sunny days, from easy and paved to expert and challenging, some pet friendly some bike friendly. I love Redood Park. Go there.

Lovely stop for a short or long hike to escape the city

By Mica H |

We didn't have a lot of time but we're looking for something close to the airport and the Oakland temple with those great views, and this was the perfect place! We ended up doing the redwood peak trail since we always enjoy a good summit hike. It was perfect, short, sweet and a nice cool break from the hot city sun. We saw professional dog walkers and heard it was also a great place for archery. If we had time we heard great things about the west and east trails, both a bit long for our short plans though. We started with a stroller but ended up switching to our baby carrier, which was necessary, even though the trails are all well used and well marked, they are not city stroller friendly. Maybe if you had an off-road stroller you'd be fine. Parked at the space center. Ate at this amazing cheeseburger joint in my photos. Yum!!!

Beautiful forest near to the heart of Oakland

By Rob S |

The Redwood forest is only a short drive from the heart of Oakland. The walks are easy and relaxing and the redwoods, the remnants of sprouts from old stumps, are often arrayed as a crown and are, like all redwood, magnificent.

Very peaceful and relaxing

By ohiotraveler933 |

We visited 6 National Parks in northern California and this was by far my favorite. We loved the ferns and searching for banana slugs.

A Walk in the Woods - Perfect

By Jan S |

Walking in the Redwoods is so special. The smell of the trees and the beauty is breath-taking. A very relaxing way to spend a morning or afternoon. Many, many trails.

Got lost, but it was beautiful

By Jennifer O |

I am not an experienced hiker, but I love to hike to change up and not go to the gym. I went with a friend thinking it was going to be a fairly easy trail. Instead, we learned there were many trails and that WE WERE LOST. The good news is that the trail is a loop with many trails within (some winding, some uphill, some straight and flat).

Everyone was incredibly friendly and said "hello" throughout the experience. They also stopped to chat if we need help figuring something out. I would certainly go back!

Hike

Great place to go out and enjoy nature. Hiked with my friends. Got to get to spend time and enjoy the view. Clean. Recommending to visit this park if you are first time in Oakland.

Hard to believe this is part of a big city

By roadtrip_ken_2017 |

I've hiked in Redwood Regional Park many times over the years and it still amazes me that it's just a few minutes from home and within the city of Oakland - it feels like a different world. The ridge trails have some nice views and are good for easy hiking, but getting onto some of the smaller and less-crowded hillside trails can be a wonderful way to explore more of what the park has to offer. So many options for hiking at this beautiful park - I enjoy every visit there.

A Hidden (yet somewhat confusing) gem

By Arboreal Platypus II |

We were down in Oakland to visit our mid 20’s son. Being an active family, we wanted something outdoorsy to do. A quick review of options turned up the Redwood Regional Park as an option. It was a great though somewhat confusing place to go. They make maps easily available and parking seemed reasonable. The maps were a little curious though. We are used to reading maps but for some reason this one made it a surprisingly interesting challenge to figure out our path. No big deal though. There are multiple path options of differing lengths and so we finally (with little difficulty) navigated back to our car. A good afternoon (about 2 hours) out.

Not to be missed

Easy Getaway!

By misopiso88 |

Just minutes from the hustle and bustle of Oakland/Berkeley, is this amazing spot of tranquility. My son and I saw that Redwood Park was listed as the #1 on TA so we decided to check it out. So glad we did! The drive there alone with the breathtaking views of the entire bay area is reason enough to visit. Great paths throughout the Redwoods. Highly recommend!

Nice park

By tjo |

Went for a long hike here under a nice canopy of redwood and other trees. Trails are well maintained; the trail I took had a fair amount of up and down.

not crowded like the National parks...

By tyagi |

This is an out of the way redwood forest. Some of the other more famous redwood parks, that are National Parks, are usually crowded and noisy. This park is not and walking through the trees is beautiful.

Great Day Hiking!

By Betsy R |

This park offers some great, well-maintained trails for day hiking. There are several routes to choose from, so you can pick your length. Plenty of nice parking, and leashed dogs are welcomed and abundant. The trail follows the ridge for a good bit, offering great panoramic views of surrounding distant peaks, and then parts of the trail dip down into the lower canyon along the creek under tall red woods. The climb into and out of the canyon are moderately hard on the lungs and shins, but nothing dramatic if you are in reasonably good shape.

Decent hike for Oakland!

By hungryhungryhipp0s4 |

I didn't know this place existed but was looking for something close to SF that wasn't going across the Golden Gate Bridge. It's an easy hike surrounded by pretty redwoods that I would recommend.

Urban Dog Trail

By Don H |

Urban walkers will enjoy the Oakland hills Redwood regional Park. Great for well behaved dogs on leash, hikers, and share patches with equine and trail bikers. Bay, pine and oak filter the paths and offer a mix of coastal hills scents. Dry usually in the summer and enchanting misty in the late fall and into early spring.

Quiet hiking adventure

By Steve12072016 |

We are blessed in the East Bay with several wonderful parks along the top of the hills that ring our part of the San Francisco area. TIlden, above Berkeley, is the most developed and has lots of organized activities to enjoy. But Redwood, above Oakland, is a much more special outdoor adventure. There are so many trails -- both flat and steep as you like -- and you can often go for long periods without seeing other hikers (or mountain bikers). The trails take you in and out of sunshine if you like it that way. The trees are fabulous and with lots of varieties besides redwoods. A very fine place to walk dogs and meet friendly other dog walkers from time to time on your route.

Somewhat hilly walking & cycling, great redwoods, fabulous views.

By danielmillstone |

Three uphill miles from the Orinda BART station, the park features deep ravines, very tall third-grown redwoods, views of San Francisco Bay and even Marin (with no fog). Many cycling routes. Useful maps at the park entrance. When I was there, mid December? Ladybugs were swarming in some places. Much less crowded, when I was there than Mt Tam.

Very nice Park

By Alec D |

When visiting Oakland I love hiking. One of the places we go is Redwood Regional Park. The are numerous trails to choose from...some with some amazing views. If you like hiking in nature then put Redwood Regional Park on your list.

Don't think about hiking the West Ridge Trail without at least 3 liters of water per hiker

By Miriam Erez |

First third: amazing. Second third: challenging. Last third: a struggle. Granted, it was a hot day (90 deg. F.), but there were no working water fountains 'til like the last bit that was about a 10-min. hike from there to the nearest parking lot, where my knight of a husband had to drop my daughter and I off while he hiked to the Skyline Staging Parking Lot and drove around to pick us up, as we were exhausted and waterless.

We could've filled up at the water fountain during the first third...if it had worked. They need another one later in the trail in any case.

Little slice of heaven in the east bay hills

By Kathy M |

This park is a jewel of the east bay. My husband and I hike it as often as we can, and during the long days of summer can get in a brisk 1.5 hour hike after work under the trees and along the stream. Its a magical transportation from the urban office to a sylvan glade in about 45 minutes. A lot of people and dogs hike and/or bike the numerous trails in this park, but it never feels crowded. It's a welcome reminder that we live in paradise!

One of Oakland's Incredible regional Parks

By LetsgoOakland_11 |

One of the true joys of living in Oakland is that any time you want to escape the urban environment with its hustle and bustle, all you have to do is take a walk in one of the many urban regional parks. In what other city do you have hundreds of miles of gorgeous, unspoiled nature trails, most of which are cooled by towering redwood groves? And of all these parks, Redwood is one of my favorites. I come here to renew my spirit as well as my body (through the exercise opportunities it provides). Uncrowded and unspoiled, It may not have the redwoods that are thousands of years old, but the second growth forest it provides is still spectacularly beautiful. And it is a reminder that all of the area used to be covered in these magnificent trees, which are native and fascinating. Redwood Park is truly an urban jewel. A great place to jog, take a hike or a leisurely stroll, picnic, walk your dog, and find peace and tranquility. Redwood Park is an urban jewel.

well maintained, easy parking

By Terrance J |

i dont write a lot of reviews, but after the horrible week my girl and i had at a sh***hotel, we were able to get away and check out the redwoods. this place is legit. and its the only place in the area with free parking

One of our favorites.

By Katie K |

We love coming to the redwoods rain or shine for some beautiful views and amazing hikes. Most of the trails are shaded so it stays nice and cool. A great place for families, friends, or even solo when you need to remember to to put things in perspective. Trails range from easy for toddlers to challenging for even those in shape. Parking is a fee, but plenty of free parking within a very short walking distance.

Visit Redwood Regional Park in Oakland

By bonnie m |

Redwood Regional Park is a short drive from my home. It is a wonderful alternative to Muir Woods. There is a two lane road that goes from Oakland to Moraga and the drive is just spectacular for the views. Moraga has some really good shopping and restaurants too.
The park is dog friendly, if you leash your dog and the walking trails are easy for most people. Check it out!

Well maintained and well marked trails.

The system of tails is among the best in the bay area. After the recent rains, I was in heaven hiking the Sunset trail and Sequoia/Bayview trail.

Our favorite Bay Area Hiking Spot

By Malia W |

What a beautiful place to hike! We get the whole family out there and hit all the trails. It's a great way to stay cool under the trees but also get in a good hike. We've encountered a few younger reckless bikers, so I would say just listen for them (brakes, gears, etc.) coming and you'll be ok. Always move to the right so they can pass on the left. This is a great place for little ones to explore too. I would highly recommend families stay off the Chaparral Trail. It's very steep, rocky, and dangerous for littles-- the mountain bikers use it alot too! We got stuck going down it a couple times and now we know to avoid it. Dogs are allowed off leash as long as they are under voice control, so it perfect for our Border Aussie. A great, fun, cool hike for the family!

Muir Woods in Oakland!

Absolutely stunning scenery. It is like Muir Woods in Oakland. Super quiet and free parking during the week. Lots of beautiful redwood trees. Paved walkway leading to dirt trails. Popular on the weekends, but still great to enjoy nature. Dogs on leash welcome.

short drive to enjoy

By Bruce B |

This place is a short drive from Oakland. It is a good place to hike and they allow dogs. There is water in the parking lot up top or you pay to park in the valley entrance. The redwood valley walk is very nice but dogs need to be on a leash there. Great place for a picnic.

Best hikes in the East Bay

By KScarlatti |

If you love to hike, then come out to the East Bay and enjoy the Redwood Region park. Plenty of great hikes to choose from. See beautiful scenery, and panoramic views of the bay!

Wasn't too impressed

By oldriverrower |

Definitely not a bad park by any means, but we just didn't see anything special in it. If you are used to seeing the redwood trees then it might just seem like an ordinary park. No phone service at all is a little inconvenient too. It's also not located in the nicest part in Oakland so be wary traveling around the surrounding area.

A Walk in the Woods

By S W |

My 22 year old and I popped over for an hour hike. It is 20 minutes from Oakland but a world away. Beautiful redwoods, well maintained trails and gorgeous views! We did see broken window glass as some reviews mentioned, but we didn’t have a problem. The trails are busy at times with some unleashed, but we’ll-behaved dogs. I had no idea that such a wonderful area was so close to a busy city.

Nice Alternative to Muir Woods

By craig993 |

Redwood Regional Park is a great alternative to driving up to Muir Woods if a) you're in the East Bay and b) you want to experience some awesome redwood-laden trails. One of the great things about this park is that you can park up in the hills and then hike the rim trail around the park - then descend into the park. If you do, check out the French Trail - spectacular! (not an easy trail - bring good shoes, etc...)

A Beautiful Park With Gorgeous Trails

By Natalie V |

We recently moved to the Bay Area and have been steadily knocking out all of the famous sites. Of course, you have your big touristy draws like Muir Woods, but we were a little slow to come to this regional park. I won't lie, this was mostly because the redwoods here are not as "impressive" as some of the other places

However, our dogs needed a good hike and we didn't feel like driving far on a lazy Saturday morning, so we drove the fifteen minutes to this gem. And boy were we pleasantly surprised! This will most certainly be one of our regular hiking spots.

First of all, this is a GREAT place for dogs. Almost every single trail is dog friendly, which is becoming more and more rare. One thing to note though, because it is so dog friendly, there are always a lot of dogs around, so if your dog is dog-reactive like one of ours is, you'll want to come prepared for a little bit of a struggle.

That said though, the park is large enough to withstand a pretty large crowd. We started out with a whole parking lot full of people and were worried about congestion, however almost as soon as we got onto a trail, we saw very few people along the way. There were long stretches where we didn't come across another person and everything felt just as secluded and serene as you could want.

We started out on the Ridge Trail and completed the loop on the Stream trail--both of them were beautiful! If you want an easier, level hike, the Stream trail is pretty flat and ends with some absolutely gorgeous and serene redwood stretches. There are also countless little side trails along the way, but everything was generally pretty well marked. I would recommend taking a good look at the map before you start, or have it pre-loaded on your phone because you'll likely lose reception at some parts.

Along the way, there are some great vista outlooks so consider bringing a little picnic and hanging out at one of the benches.

If you are looking for a nice, simple hike in a beautiful park and don't want to deal with hoardes of tourists, Redwood Regional Park is an excellent choice. If you are in the East Bay, there's no question that this should be your go-to hiking spot.

I love this park

By Chris M |

It is policed by EBMUD, and they ticket you if you park off the side of the road even though there are no signs prohibiting such. That aside, the trails are nice and I love the quiet of an older forest right in the middle of a neighborhood area.

Awe-inspiring to see

A redwood retreat near the heart of metropolitan madness

By Douglas H |

Well maintained trails, room for hikers and bikers, dogs on leashes, and beautiful, secluded places to picnic

Love all the Trails

By Karina I |

Great park. Do entry fee, but you do have to pay for parking. Lots of great trails. Shaded, so can escape the California heat in the summer. I got lost on my last visit and ended up in another part of the park, but it was great too, so there is lots to explore.

Great Hiking with Off-Leash Dog Trails

By Jerri K |

Redwood Park is our favorite local hiking spot, especially if we have our dog with us. There are many hiking trails, most are on easy hills, and many of the trails allow dogs off leash. Areas that dogs must be leashed are well marked; the Stream Trail is beautiful but dogs must be leashed to protect the watershed. Please note that the East Ridge Trail, to the left as you enter the park from the parking lot, is also a mountain biking trail. It's fine to walk your dog off leash on the East Ridge Trail but be wary of cyclists that don't always respect the "yield to humans and dogs" signs. The East Bay Regional Park system is a local treasure. The parks are well maintained and restrooms are scattered throughout the park. Bring your dog for a great day outdoors!

Again, Hard to Believe You're in Oakland

By Twinoakmom |

In the hills of Oakland is the beautiful Redwood Regional Park.

Hiking is a great activity. Lots of birds and flowers to check out on your walk.

There's an archery range also.

Urban Decompression

By KevinU |

Redwood RP is an Oakland treasure that offers a bit of solitude on its trails, especially on a cool magical misty day. Oakland had what is believed to be some of the oldest and tallest redwoods before they were cut down to help build San Francisco. While these trees are not old growth, it's still easy to imaging what these hills must have been like in their pristine state.

If in Oalkland can't make it to Muir Woods, southgate along the stream trail is easy stroll with a great canop

By Don S |

I f you are already in Oakland and you can't make it to Muir Woods, southgate entrance and a an easy level hike along the stream trail is an easy stroll with a great canopy of 2nd growth and 3rd growth trees in the shade. And steep trails up to the hilltops for the more energetic. But for magnificance of giant old growth trees--you still have to go to West Marin, which is an amazing Natl park, and the Pt Reyes peninsula worth a day of two--an island in time!
Weekends sometimes there is a car parking charge. Dogs on leash OK in some parts.

Beautiful park for off leashes dogs

By Tracey G |

Since I live very close to this park, I go here quite often. If you need to get away and be among the beauty of redwoods, this is your place. There are many trails that lead to this park (west ridge trail for one) as well as a nice parking lot off of Skyline Blvd right next to the Chabot Space and Science Center.
I take my dogs off leash here and run them. This is also a great place to see people on horses occasionally. There are many picnic areas that can be reserved or you can just show up. The redwood bowl area has a bathroom, drinking water and view of the archery range. They also just built a beautiful, wheelchair accessible “deck” to enjoy the surroundings.
This is a high tick area in the winter so make sure to check your pets as well as yourself after your hike.

Lunch among the Redwoods

By bigkahuana |

We checked Trip Advisor for things to do around the Oakland area and were pleasantly surprised to find this gem of a park closeby. We packed a lunch and ate among the mighty Redwoods, a very pleasant experience.

Beautiful redwoods in my backyard!

By Katey B |

This park is a gem! It's free entry during the week. Went on 5th grade field trip here and the kids loved it! Like a mini Muir Woods without the drive or throngs of visitors. LOVED it!

Beautiful place to spend a few hours hiking. Watch out for the bikes!

By STLL7 |

For anyone who lives in the East Bay the Redwood Regional Park provides an amazing escape to nature. Beautiful redwoods, views, variety of vegetation and lots of opportunities for a picnic. Be mindful of racing bikes on some of the trails that allow bikes, it can be a bit much on the weekends!

Great Regional Park With Many Trail Options - Dogs Welcome!

By sstern6 |

Love this park. It has great hiking trails deep in the redwoods with glens that allow for reflection while at the same time providing good flat trails suitable for biking and flat trail hiking. Dogs welcome off leash once you leave the parking lot.

Extensive nature getaway

By gpdw |

Someplace to go and meander for hours. Peaceful with well marked trails and varying typography. I usually go with my kids and amongst the trees and hush, it provides the best scenario to connect with your kid. A must do but allow yourself ample time!

Truly awe inspiring to walk among these beautiful giants

By CharmianOakland_CA |

One of the loveliest places to commune with Nature in the Bay Area. Take a day off from frenetic sightseeing and enjoy the quiet inspiration of walking among the ancient redwoods even when you are among crowds who are silenced by the magnificent surroundings. Make sure to wear walking shoes and plan to walk a bit to get to the entrance as parking close by is generally difficult.

Amazing near Urban Park

By Scott |

when you're at redwood regional Park you feel like you're in the middle of the Sierra Nevada, but you're only a few miles from downtown Oakland.

Amazing little park - real gem

By Whistledown |

One of my favorite spots in the East Bay. Great for hiking, biking, running, picnicking etc. Very quiet away from the main entries and on the side trails. Love the redwoods along Stream Trail - just like Muir Woods but fewer people.

Well worth a visit. I am there once or twice a month.

Good hiking area

By abby57 |

Our son and his family took us to Redwood Regional Park. After leaving the big highways and winding around many small, hilly streets we arrived. I was surprised that this park is a "hidden gem" near the big cities. Oh we'll just go on a short hike...... I was glad I had on my good hiking shoes. The paths are well worn and lots of people were out and about. There are maps available and if you don't know the area be sure to get one. The trails didn't have very good markers. As you go for a longer hike there are less and less people which is what makes it so great. Dogs can go along but should be well behaved and on a leash. We really enjoyed our hike in the forest. Glad that some redwoods survived and the park system keeps this area " forest like"

Parking is limited but free. Bathrooms at parking area- rustic

Gorgeous shaded trails

By Sheila W |

Love this park for hiking all levels. Mostly shaded and trails are well maintained. Able to hike with your dog too.

Extensive Park

By Thomas V |

This is a huge regional park, a great place for long hikes with amazing vegetation. Part of the green lungs of the inner Bay Area.

Gorgeous hiking trails!

By Heliana Mano |

Redwood regional park is a real gem for Oakland. It's conveniently close to the city and easily accessible by bus and if you have a car, it's really just a short ride away. So far we have explored west ridge trail which was beautiful and had lots of character and gorgeous trees, stream and bridle trail which were shaded, wet and misty and this just added to its romantic nature and fern trail which was the hardest for me because it's all the way up so hard on the legs but beautiful filled with fern plants all over. A real gem for nature lovers!

Redwood Regional Park

Truly a gem of a park with beautiful streams and redwood trees. Hiking here is exceptional. Most trails allow dogs but no bikes. Great hike on a hot day. Enjoy!!!

Nature at its best

What a wonderful place to take a walk and commune with nature. You’re surrounded by the most majestic redwoods imaginable. An inspiring experience!

Beautiful Redwoods - no traffic or parking probllems

By PMF448 |

Beautiful Redwoods without the traffic and crowd of Muir Woods. Wonderful walking paths - and picnic areas. Great place for walking your dogs and enjoying your family.

Go for a hike!

By Jack A |

It is the most amazing place atop the Oakland Hills. Great spot for a hike. Wonderful views. Just moments away from the urban hoy paloy. Make it a point to step out and get a breath of fresh air.

Redwoods walk or ridge trails without huge crowds

By LoveToTravelBoston |

Instead of heading to the Muir Woods with the masses, we decided to go to the Regional Park above Oakland. The drive up was filled with gorgeous views of the Bay and the City. Parking was tough, but, doable. And then, we were off with the dog.
In fact, everybody was off with a dog. Families, couples and friends walking with their dogs amidst the redwoods along the creek, and up on the ridges in the sun. Calm and pleasant - a real gem!

Nice Regional Park

By Rhoda L |

It's a nice park for light hiking with friends and family, and even with your best friend, if you look for a relaxing and quiet place for some exercise.

Away from it all in minutes

By Karin K |

Beautiful vistas of the east bay hills, redwoods, great trails and a feel of being away from it all. One of my favorite trail is easy to access from the Skyline Gate. From the parking lot, go left just past the portapotties and take the East Ridge on trail up about half and hour. Come back on Phillips Loop, a hard right off the East ridge trail. About an hour hike on wide trails. Dogs are allowed.

A must See

By Jessica S |

Wonderful views of the Redwood Forest. Be mindful of parking and reserving parking. Expect to spend a large amount of time here

Beautiful redwoods

My family and I are here on a visit in the bay area to see the Golden State Warriors play I noticed that this was very close to our hotel so we drove up this morning it was very beautiful seeing the sunshine through the redwoods it's a great activity for a family with kids

Favorite Place to Hike in Oakland

By Alexandra B |

Redwood Regional Park is easily my favorite place to hike in Oakland. Plenty of places to park and lots of good trails. You can make the hike leisurely or challenging with some climbs if you plan accordingly. It's a great place to bring dogs too. It's never felt too busy either. Beautiful hike through some redwoods without having to drive all the way to Marin.

Where to go for R&R

By Atldo4U |

A walk through Redwood Park always makes me feel refreshed and ready to go on. The main trails are easy on feet and tired bodies, and smaller trails can provide a good hike to the more energetic. After years of visiting the park for picnics or weddings, I still find new features it offers.

Redwoods in Oakland! Dog Friendly!

By MarcyMarkOakland |

Redwood Regional Park has such variety.
Shady redwood groves, oak studded hills, lawns around group picnic areas as well as tucked away private benches. Vistas of Mt Diablo to the east. Flat trails and steep trails, some paved, wheelchair and stroller friendly, and some single dirt tracks. Running, hiking, biking, dog and horse friendly. Dogs must be on leash in some areas, but there are plenty of off-leash areas, too.
If you're lucky you will visit during the ladybug hatch - annual event where you see thousands of newly hatched ladybugs along stream trail between the redwood grove and Skyline Gate entrance.
Numerous parking areas and entrances. Bathrooms at both North and South ends of park.
Always a wonderful experience.

Sublime

By Dave B |

Redwood Regional Park lives up to its name, with about 20 square miles of second-growth redwoods (~150-year-old trees). Lovely for hiking various distances, from .5 to 10 miles or more. Plenty of ups and downs on trails, or easy walks on flat, paved roads.

Shady Lane

By Lisa L |

If you enjoy hikes in the shade, with some sunlight filtering through, this is the place for you. A mild to moderate trek through this trail in the midst of tall redwoods, is a heart healthy way to spend your day. Before reaching the trail there are huge areas of lawn for families to have picnics. Also, there is an overflow lot if you arrive on a very busy day. It is free after regular hours if i remember correctly.

Beautiful and peaceful "Park"

By melissamS8386DA |

I was visiting the Bay and wanted to do a trail run/hike. After much research I settled on this one, and boy am I glad I did. It's so beautiful and peaceful. Went to the first parking spot inside the park and walked from there. Went for about 2.5 miles (pretty much all uphill but not overwhelming) and then ended up in a park in the middle of the forest. Very cool experience. There are several trails you can take that don't allow bikes and twist and turn. You can go easy or hard. Highly recommend!

Oakland

By Gail A M |

This park is just on the outskirts of Oakland on the east side. We were looking for a place to hike not too far away for the city. Lots of hiking trails this very large park. We were glad we explored it.

Great park for a couple of hours

By Peter M |

Not the biggest park, but great for a couple of hours. Restrooms and picknick spots available. Parking in the park is just 5$.

Redwood Radiance

By ChuckLz14 |

I actually went in October 24. Sorry for the delay on the review. The weather was perfect for late afternoon hike, so I came here and did 3 of the smaller trails. The Redwoods are amazing!!! This park is also very clean, safe and the oxygen is amazing. I actually felt parts of my chest re-awaken from how clean the air was. The rest of the trail was beautiful as well. There were some solid inclines. Thus, be ready for a challenge.

Like Muir Woods but less crowded

By culdesacSanDiego |

What a pleasant surprise to discover this enchanting park. Our daughter’s family had explored the park and wanted to show us. The drive there included some twisty turns and gorgeous views- I was glad I wasn’t driving. We entered at Redwood Gate and hiked the Stream Trail for an hour or so. It was lovely, shaded by the huge trees, peaceful, and very uncrowded (on a Sunday!) Level, easy, a few restrooms and drinking water stations.

The tress speak for themselves

By RevRandy |

Yesterday I stood among the redwoods -- their color, their aroma, their size, their energy -- and was fed in a deeply spiritual way. Later realized I didn't take one photo because this was to be experienced, not captured.

Easy accessed, and some of the stands of trees can be experienced even by non-hikers.

Beautiful green space high above Oakland

By katetahirah |

I was recently in the Bay Area for the first time & was quite taken by all the undeveloped green hills high above Oakland. A little bit of research turned up Redwood Regional Park as the best place to enjoy some wilderness in the city. This park is quite extensive; you can enjoy it on foot, on bike, or with horses. There's plenty of shelters if it's raining and lots of picnic tables. I also saw at least one play area for kiddos.

My mistake!

By Alythra |

I made several huge mistakes when it came to this park. Tourists, don't make the same mistakes!

First off, while I had planned to rent a car to drive to this park, members of my family convinced me to just Uber there instead. This was an awful decision. The Uber ended up dropping us off at one of the smaller trails near a stable. Without a single map insite, we were very lost.Thankfully when I went inside the stables to ask for directions, a gentleman there was able to provide me with his own trail map and gave suggestions for which trails to take.

Mistake number two that I made was assuming that I could wear jeans and not bring water because I had thought (through my minimal internet research) that the main trail through the park would be relatively short, even, and leveled. I was extremely wrong - the trails were true hiking trails and were not easy walks. Because we were dropped off at one of the smaller trails, we had to navigate two, relatively elevated trails to get to the main trail. It was a horrible expereince doing so in jeans and without water.

When we finally made it to the main trail, we really enjoyed the scenery, but we were all exhausted and wanted to walk the trail as quickly as possible so that we can find the bus stop and ride back into San Francisco. Uber was not an option because none of our phones had service. The walk was long, hot, and quite exhausting.

When we FINALLY came close to the parking lot with the bus stop after over 2 hours hiking, we got lost. So many trails began branching off that, despite asking for help with directions from others, we still ended up at the wrong parking lot.

So how did our journey end? There happened to be a little house next to the parking lot we went to where I saw several people going in and out. I desperately tried my luck and asked them for directions to the other parking lot. Lo and behold! - the people inside were from the stables where I first asked for directions! After explaining our situation, they so very graciously drove us quite a distance to a BART station. I still cannot believe the kindness of that lady who drove us. Such a sweetheart. I never got her name, but thank you!

Forest bathing for the weary urban spirit

By E D |

Many trails abound in the park system – I usually take the one off skyline (about 3/4 mile from where Skyline goes right and the road you're on continues as Joaquin Miller) that has a well-worn, fairly level trail popular with bicyclists, dog-walkers, runners – even though well traveled, you will have many quiet moments under the redwood canopy to renew your spirit. I usually bring my small deaf dog who is happy on the trail, and tho she cannot hear me, I like to think she feels me singing to her. --- Whatever trail you take, you will come home with more oxygen in your lungs, better able to meet the demands of your life.

Majestic forest must see!

By Charlespierce1 |

Was in San Fran for the Super Bowl, so happy I stopped here. Trails were marked clearly and you could get through most of the park in a little over an hour. Overall a very well maintained park with a book/gift shop and cafe.

A day for hiking

By Kraea62 |

We were visiting family in the area and wanted to get in some steps so decided to visit the park to walk in the woods. The area had fairly moderate winds and there were fires burning in surrounding towns. We didn’t even think about any danger. We ended up parking alongside the road at the entrance as the gate was not open. I’m unsure why unless it was the weather and fire situation in the surrounding areas. There were many people hiking so we didn’t think twice about it. As we walked into the park the wonderful smell of pine trees opened our senses and minds to the enjoyment and beauty of nature. We began hiking up the path only to hear a tree falling below it towards the road. As we continued we hoped our rental car was not in the path of that tree. We continued our climb up the side of the mountain enjoying all the trees, plants, birds and smells. We neared the top of the path when we heard some heavy creaking of a large tree above us which was enough of a concern to make us decide to make our way back down the path. It was a nice activity although we really weren’t prepared for what we did. Bottom line, if you’re going to hike the paths here be prepared.

An urban Redwood forest

By John C |

Redwood Regional Park is an oasis in the hills of Oakland, California where a hiker or picnicker can feel the glory of the primeval forest without having to know it is second-growth instead. It has other trees, wildflowers, and wildlife from birds to occasionally reported mountain lions. It is ten minutes from the city hotel district and close to other parks (Tilden in Berkeley for example).

Went for a lovely walk in the woods. Just beautiful. We went on a Saturday morning and while there were a lot of cars around, we didn't run into a lot of people. Quiet hike in the woods. Good trails. Perfect day!!!

The best place to run in the east bay

Such an amazing place to run or hike, hundreds of miles of trails, my getaway to feel away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Great views overlooking the entire bay!

Great Hiking among the redrwoods

If you enjoy hiking, redwood Park has a myriad of trails. It has both trails that are strenuous and fairly relaxed. If you enter off Redwood Road, there's a wonderful play area for kids.

The majestry of nature.

By ChrisandJulieRoberts |

We were having a family reunion and everyone wanted to see Redwoods. This is a great place to see them. Be sure to get there early as space gets limited later in the day. The sunlight through to the valley floor is magical. We saw a few deer, but not as many birds as I expected.

big tall trees and love the redwoods...!

By Tomy X |

Nice and clean park , must see the park if you live in the bay areas..! It's closed to home and the bay.

Only Place on Earth

By Kathleen Slater |

One of the true "Wonders of the World". To stand among these giant Coastal Redwoods is both humbling and awe Inspiring at the same time. And to see them in their massive groves is to be in touch with unbelievable scale, both in terms of size as well as nature history. Should be on everyone's "bucket list"!
