If you don't find a Zinfandel you like here, you probably don't like zins

By Steve_Shoeless |

While most of Napa tore up their Zinfandel vines in the 80's after they learned they could make cabs and charge a lot more for them, Biale stayed the course. As a result of this, you get a vineyard that is uniquely different than most of their neighbors. The staff is friendly and not at all pretentious. They enjoy educating people and offer more than a dozen red Zinfandels, as well as some Petite Sirahs and blends. After four years of visiting Napa, this is the only vineyard where my wife and I have joined their wine club. We're always pleasantly surprised at what we get. Give this place a try, it's a wonderful experience and a nice diversion from all of the cab vineyards surrounding them.

Great atmosphere, wine and host!

By MPRH11 |

We had a WONDERFUL experience at Biale Vineyards! The atmosphere and scenery are amazing! The black chickens are beautiful and a wonderful touch to the atmosphere. Tom was our host and did an AMAZING job! He was patient with our many questions, did an excellent job of explaining the wines and most importantly, gave us some great suggestions of food to pair the wine with! If you haven't tried the port - you must! None of us thought we liked port before tasting it. Wow! We ran into Tom the next day at a local restaurant and he is just a great guy all around. They are lucky to have him! The wine at Biale is fantastic! It has risen quickly to be one of our favorites. Highly recommend going!

Delicious!

By Kfischer123 |

All of the wines we tasted were delicious. We showed up to a personal table with our names written on it. Plenty of wines to taste and friendly staff. I think the value at 30$ a tasting is quite good (considering the prices at other places) and online reservations are nice. Their wines run about 50$ each more or less and are a good value for wine given that you pay a Napa premium. Would recommend and will go back!

This is one of the 500 vineyards you don't want to miss!

By audrasena |

We visited Robert Biale in late January, it was our 5th vineyard visit this trip. We were met by Thomas who led us to the "first class" seats, rocking chairs overlooking the vineyard.
In addition to tasting fantastic Biale wine, we learned the story of Biale vineyards and fell in love in the wonderful ways it has made a strong footprint in the Valley.

Wonderful time with Zinfandel’s

By Ltiggertaz |

The wine is amazing and the in-depth information imparted about the vintages served fascinating and so welcomed. Will be back and bring friends.

Outstanding

By Jerrod H |

This was our first time here, searching for a wine tasting venue for a group of business associates later this year. All of the staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Pat Jeffries set this experience apart with his easy going tour, sharing knowledge of the wine making process. And the wine was not only excellent, but at approachable prices. Robert Biale is doing it right.

Best place we visited

By Ashley L |

Came to try some zins. Left joining their club. Great experience with the past, present, future tasting. Andrew did a great job walking us through. A definite must on our next visit.

Total enjoyment of a winery

By jeanne Taggart |

My husband and I have been with the Biale Winery for over ten years. We felt it was the absolute best Zinfandel wine. Then over the years we fell for most of the other varieties. Even after my husband passed I’ve been coming back to California and looking forward to the exceptionally wonderful treatment to entertain my friends at a tasting. Their wines are truly delightful.

Good wine, but missing something

By DSullivan1964 |

My husband and I were referred to Robert Biale Vineyards by a friend, and called and scheduled an appointment for a tasting. When we arrived, we were directed to a table out on the patio and joined by a representative of the vineyards. We didn't get his name, but he told us he has only been at Robert Biale for a couple of months. He was knowledgeable about wine and the winery, but something was just a little bit off for us. He seemed a bit too casual and needed to be a little more professional. By professional, I don't mean stuffy, I just mean he was dressed casually and was leaning back in his chair and treating it more like we were friends who had known each other a long time instead of people whom had just met. I appreciate casual, but he was uncomfortably casual.

Anyway, the wine was very good, and we ended up taking three bottles home with us. While we were there we tasted the 2011 Black Chicken Zin, the 2013 Rosato, the Royal Punishers Petite Sirah, the 2008 Zin, the 2009 Zappatore Zin, and the 2012 Black Chicken Zin. Our favorites were the Royal Punishers Petite Sirah, the Rosato, and the 2012 Black Chicken Zin.

I don't know if we will return to Robert Biale or not in the future, but we did enjoy the wine and the view.

Family style visit

By Robert Y |

Biale Vineyards is my definite "go to" place for Zinfandel. Their single vineyard wines are excellent. The atmosphere at the tasting area is very casual, laid back, like a family visit. The story of the winery and how it came to be is vintage Americana. Try it, you'll like it!

Tasters need to give guests their better wines to taste if they want them to buy their wine

By Chris M |

Zinfandel's are the main attraction. You will find good variety of zins but Aldo is the best by far and reasonably priced....after the taster was forced to open a bottle of this for us to try. Really! Starts the tasting by telling us their best wine is the Aldo but were are not going to let you taste any. We almost got up and left. IF you have an uninspiring taster just leave.

Feeling grateful

By Leah H |

We had such a nice tasting experience. The vineyard is lovely, the wines are historic and tasty but mostly we enjoyed the stories and conversations with our host.

Great wine. Great views. Great experience. 👍

By bonnie g |

Always a favorite! I love to bring visiting guests here. A beautiful vineyard setting to enjoy some best zinfandel in the valley. The staff are always welcoming and friendly and do everything to make the visit a pleasure. You can taste the care and passion that goes into every wine at this family owned winery. Highly recommended!

Great red Zins

By divefan |

A small, casual tasting room but with nice people to look after you. This is my favorite wine, so I'm biased.

Return visit

By Bob Yeend |

Always a pleasure to visit the Biale Vineyards: pleasant surroundings, engaging hosts and exceptional wine!

Best Zins in the valley

By Chase S |

Gotta stop by for a flight at this small but powerful Zin maker. They still gather some of the original Zin vines from the valley and have a lot of offer -- more than just their revered Black Chicken. It's a no frills but the view kind of place and friendly staff.

Best Place to Wine taste!!

By Jynnjynn |

Robert Biale not only has a great red called Black Chicken, but they also have a great chef and the best wine tasting event in Napa Valley!! I took my mom there so that she could see where her favorite bottle of red wine was made and we had a great time!!! The people were so nice we felt like we were visiting friends that we hadn't seen in a long time.
I definitely recommend this winery and I can't hardly wait to go back in April for their next big wine tasting event.

Fantastic Zin and Fantastic Setting

By Playfield |

One of our must stop wineries was Biale, we tasted marvelous Zins and were assisted by Thomas who was knowledgeable and accommodating. We were glad to be able to join the Black Chicken Society. Two days later as were wrapping up our Napa Valley trip, we wondered what we wanted to do on our last afternoon. We chose to return to Biale where we were welcomed and enjoyed another superb zin experience.

We knew that we liked Biale Zin, but our expectations were exceeded!.

Small Winery with Bold Wines Part 2

By TXTraveler728 |

We were recommended to go to this place from Kayla at Elyse. It was like Elyse part 2. Great non Cab wines which is what we were looking for. The Zins were amazing, The petite syrachs hit the spot. We would never have found out about this place without this help. A great location to hang out on the porch and sip wines while looking at the vineyard. I would come back here!

A great wine tasting experience!

By Thomas G |

An outstanding experience! John was a wealth of knowledge. Very engaging and a gentleman! Best wines by far!! Love the Black Chicken!

Poor Guest Service

By staceyjane917 |

Unfortunately this trip the guest service was very poor at the tasting that we had arranged via email prior to our arrival.

When we arrived my husband went inside to see about where we were sitting. I walked my mom (77 yrs old) and my Uncle (79 years old) to the bench to sit in the shade under the tree while we tasted. They both do not drink and wanted to wait outside rather than in the car. My cousin and her mom who also don't drink were coming as well and were going to sit out on the bench with them or look at the chickens or whatever while the remaining 4 of us tasted.

When I walked into the inside I find my husband and an employee Tom (I think was his name) in a heated discussion. When I asked my husband what was going on Tom turned to me and said that we were not allowed to have extra people sit or mill around while we were tasting. I tried to diffuse the situation by asking him what the actual issue was. He then turned to me and told me quite loudly that a phone call would have been nice and that they don't allow people to be there without tasting and if we had that many people we would have to pay a different higher price for the tasting and that I should have called (which he told me about 3 or 4 times with the use of his hand next to his ear and mouth like I was hard of hearing or something and he had to make hand gestures so I would be sure to understand. Really?).

Now maybe this was my misunderstanding in the email communications with the tasting room but I didn't know we couldn't have people there who didn't drink. When we were emailing I was just giving them the number of people tasting so maybe I am partially to blame. What I am not to blame for is the rude tone and treatment we received from Tom about this misunderstanding. Needless to say I was quite embarrassed at the treatment of us by Tom in front of my family and how everyone on the patio was staring and listening to this unnecessary exchange.

I then saw the table we were set up with and that there was seating for 6. There was also a table next to it that was not reserved and was empty. Couldn't he perhaps have talked to us about this and maybe suggested that the others in our party have a seat next to us at the EMPTY table and then go about tasting us?

We had come to the tasting with the intention of purchasing 2 cases for shipping and joining the club as we do love their wines. I know this is probably not a lot to them in terms of money but we entertain at our home in Dallas all the time and have served their wines in the past to our guests. Word of mouth travels a very long way especially in this day and age of social media. We actually were there last August from a recommendation of a friend in Dallas and purchased a case of their wine.

After the way Tom treated us this time (he started the whole conversation with my husband by saying "What do you need?" in a gruff tone instead of greeting him with hello how are you or hello how can I help you?) we decided it would be in the best interest of all of us to go ahead and leave.

My cousin, Aunt and Uncle live in the Bay Area and often have guests in town and they said they have never run into anything like that elsewhere in the Wine Country. As a matter of fact we went to another winery right after this and we were treated very differently by a friendly awesome tasting hostess.

After that experience I can say for sure that my aunt and uncle will not be recommending your winery to any of their friends. I'm quite sure my husband won't either which is too bad because the wine is quite nice but guess what? We will spend our hard earned money where they know how to treat their guest.

On another note, I emailed them regarding this hoping they would actually care and respond to my email but guess what? Crickets...see poor customer service all around.

Quaint, Family Run Winery w/Great History

By Michael F |

Located immediately north of downtown Napa, this small specialized winery is a great stop that zinfandel and petite syrah fans should not miss. The staff are very down to earth, personal and accommodating. If the weather is nice, which in Napa is 95% of the time, sit outside under the porch or better yet, drag a table and chairs out to sit alongside the vineyard. The wines are pristine and polished. You will get to taste 5 or more wines depending on what is on tap for the day. Don't be surprised if you leave with a case. We joined the club on the spot.

One of the best!

By kt87 |

This is a favorite winery of mine in the Napa Valley. Beautiful patio surrounded by their vineyards. Wonderful hospitality. Jen is a gem.

Black Chicken

By Julie A |

Our tasting was arranged by a friend, so I had no idea what the wine or winery was about. We were not disappointed. Biale has an interesting history, small tasting room, friendly staff, and great Zinfandel. We didn't taste Zinfanel anywhere else, so it's a must do in Napa. Enjoy!

5 stars, World class Zins, great experience.

By Robert B |

This is an excellent winery and tasting experience, with world class Zinfandels. Thomas hosted us and was knowledgable about the wines, and the history and legacy of the winery. A very fun experience as well. Every wine we tasted was very good which is not common at many wineries. They do several different expressions of Zinfandel from light to medium bodied wines. Not the sweet jammy style of Zins, but elegant and very structured multi-layered wines. We bought 3 different Zins and we will be back!!!! Do not miss this gem.

Great Experience

By westphillyboy |

Strongly recommend visiting especially if you like Zinfandels. Been to a lot of wine tasting and this was the best. They are so kind and informative. They do nice little touches like your party's name on the the table.
The wines were great, but the warmth and kindness of the staff was greater.
Thanks, Tom and the rest of the staff. See you again in the near future. :-)

Excellent

By LCM1968 |

What a wonderful experience. The setting, the people, and the wines were amazing. An excellent job of explaining the history and wine they produce and offering comparisons with side by side of the same wine but different years. Our server was wonderful and learned that he is from Chicago where my husband grew up. He was very personable and we enjoyed the experience. Would love to go back again.

Small and personal with wonderful wines

By Indyblonde |

In general I think the necessity of making an appointment at a winery is a little pretentious, but nevertheless on the advice of a friend we did that at Biale and they didn't disappoint. Very personal, beautiful views, comfortable patio and Alyse (I hope I spelled that right) was helpful, knowledgeable, and fun. I enjoyed the wines very much. Their signature wine is Black Chicken and that was excellent but also enjoyed one called Varossa. The Syrahs are terrific. If you want to sit down and taste some excellent wines I would say this is a definite must. There's no winery dog (is there?) big retail presence, no tour buses - just wonderful wines.

A must visit, relax, enjoy the casual setting

By betihavebeenthere |

Great people, casual, family friendly, comfortable outside area with covered seating beside vineyards. All of the staff, especially Pat the manager, were amazing. Specific to their wine, I have never experienced a more consistent portfolio of wine where we enjoyed EVERY one we tasted. I can't say enough good things about Biale. If you prefer pretentious and snobby, pass by Biale and keep driving further into Napa.

If you like zin, you need to stop at Biale

By JWK1969 |

Robert Biale produces a bunch of different zins and some petite sirah. The zins are all excellent (the petite sirah is tasty, too). We tasted on the patio overlooking the vineyard and some of Napa. I was a lovely day and setting. Our host was very informative and friendly.

Vine tasting

By Brett E |

This was my third visit to Biale vineyards.
You must like Zinfandel and/or Petite Sirah. No White wine here. Which was good with me. Lovely patio setting with view over the vineyard and vista of the Eastern mountains of the Napa Valley.

Jen Lee was great, very knowledgable and a great host.

Highly recommended.

Wine degustation party of 4

By Carlos T |

Great place, great wines, cosy and the more important with great people. Great experiences are always through person relationships and these guys were great: Richard, Jennifer and we even get to know Robert himself - a humble farmer with a great smile. Totally recommed the experiences! We visited several winerys and there was where we bought more bottles - wines are superb!!!

The joy of visiting Robert Biale Vineyards

By allen b |

Each time I visit Robert Biale, the experience only gets better, Never the same but always a treat to enjoy the spectacular wines, warm and engaging people and the story/history never gets old. A not-to-miss when visiting the Napa Valley and perhaps the best part is taking some wine with me to enjoy at home while re-living the experience. Cheers to Robert Biale Vineyards and the team. I can't wait for the next visit!

Great hidden Gem in Napa

By FrequenTraveler123 |

Biale is a nice, small family run vineyard and winery making great Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and blends. They are long time Napa producers who care deeply about their wine and their customers. Definitely worth a visit. They do incredible wines with an attention to detail and their visitors.

Awesome people, Amazing wine

By BigMako |

My wife and I visited Biale Winery. We were met with a glass of "Black Chicken. That, by itself was great, but as we were finishing our tasting we were lucky enough to receive a real treat. Bob Biale and Dave Pramuk showed up and talked with us for a while. If you didnt know, they are the owners. The wine is amazing. 2012 releases are awesome! This winery is a must visit if you are in Napa. The wine isn't the only thing that deserves 5 stars. An amazing place to visit, but watch out for the "Black Chicken."

Excellent Customer Service

By Jen C |

Our wine educator was very knowledgeable and made us feel very welcome. We did not feel rushed or that we were there for the sales.

Beautiful Setting for Amazing Zinfandel!

By Malvina S |

I had an amazing experience at Biale Vineyards! I asked for a last minute reservation and the staff were so nice about it and able to fit me in. They provided me with an amazing spot to slowly and peacefully take in the views of the vineyards and mountains, and of course to sample the wine. The Zinfandel is exquisite! I loved hearing the stories about the Black Chicken and will be back for sure! I was only able to take home 1 bottle, but wished I could take back more. Thanks for a fantastic first Napa Valley experience!

Patio Wine Tasting

By Rbhaaland |

Another great little place that James with Flex Tours took us to....family owned winery with lots of history. We went inside and met with Jim....got to talking and then headed outside on the patio to wine taste and learn the history of this wonderful place. The "BLACK CHICKEN" will be explained to you....I won't spoil the story, along with generational stories of the business.

We had such a relaxing visit, that when James came back to get us, we were all sharing travel stories about Normandy, France and sipping wine. A definite "must" when in Napa!

Tell Jim we said HI!!

Loved the Black Chicken!

By beckster1989 |

We had a great experience here. They has a beautiful spot set up for us to do our tasting as we looked out over the vineyard. Service was top notch. We joined their club - which we rarely do since we live in Ohio - but we definitely wanted to get more wine from this vineyard!

Beautiful vineyards, great wines

By Pamela S |

We made a reservation at the Robert Biale Vineyards on the recommendation of a friend. We are SO glad we did! It was beautiful and relaxing, Pat and Thomas were amazing, and we enjoyed every wine. We highly recommended you add it to your Napa trip!

A Great Experience

By Michael M |

This may have been the best winery visit my friends and I experienced during our week in Napa and Sonoma. The problem was this was the first winery we visited on this trip, which was our 3rd to the area, and, as a result, all of the subsequent winery visits we'd scheduled had a hard time equaling the experience we had at Biale. I've been drinking their Zinfandel, the Black Chicken and the Monto Rosso, for years, and finally getting to the winery gave me a new and greater appreciation for the great wines I've been drinking. The people we dealt with were great and very knowledgeable about everything from the history of the winery, to breaking down for us how their grapes eventually become the great wine we get to enjoy from the bottle. I especially loved the story of how "Black Chicken" came to called "Black Chicken." And the highlight of our visit was getting to meet Bob Biale, who was kind enough to come in from the vineyards and speak to us. All in all, a great experience!

Great Wines

By Craig030 |

Alina was an awesome host. She poured us great wine after great wine. Told us the story of the Black Chicken. The blackboard with our names on it was a great touch, made us very welcomed.

Premium experience at Biale

By JWK1969 |

I have reviewed Biale before, but I think I need to update based on my most recent visit. It is a prime location in Napa, and the wines are outstanding. I love the patio tasting with a view of the vineyards. The wines are excellent and some of the best zins you can find anywhere. Great history stories, too. What really put it over the top was our host and guide, Elena. She was so much fun and so knowledgeable about the history of Biale and the individual wines, and she really helped raise the experience another level. All of those I brought with me this trip were all Napa newbies, and they raved about her. So her information was approachable for those new to wine as well as old hats (like me). Biale is definitely on my short list of places I would highly recommend.

Perfect wine

By 58debra |

We love love their wines, the story and the staff. The setting is absolutely perfect too. Our wine tasting host today was Tom he was wonderful for our group. Even our white wine drinkers ended up buying a few reds. Thanks for treating us like we were a part of the family vineyards.

Great Zins!

By 121lela54 |

Another winery (Donna at Sherwin Family Vineyards) referred us to Biale Vineyards as we were looking for one that produced some nice zins. You do need to make an appointment for a wine tasting. Our tasting host was Bill who was very personable and informative. We totally enjoyed spending 2 hours talking and enjoying their great wines with him. Their wines were fabulous and their vineyards were beautiful. I would highly recommend a visit to this vineyard.

Tasting

By Karen S |

This was the best wine tasting experience. Alina was so knowledgeable, friendly, and accommodating. Every wine we tasted was fantastic. Highly recommend Biale.

Fantastic Zinfandels

By Karsy68 |

My husband and I have really been enjoying Zinfandels lately and heard Biale had some great ones. Appointments are required and it's quite easy to make one by emailing the tasting room. We decided to do the Valley Vista tasting.

We arrived to find a table with a chalkboard on it, welcoming us. It was a hot day and it was so nice to sit outside in the breeze with a fabulous view. The Valley Vista tasting is normally four wines. On our menu it was three Zinfandels and a Sirah. Our host, Alina, did give us some extra pours as well.

These wines are good. My husband kept reminding me every time we walked into a winery that we couldn't join the club because we already belong to two. After a few sips of these delicious wines, he reminded me again. After a few more tastes, yep, we joined the club and also bought a case of wine to be shipped home. Some of our favorites were the Black Chicken Zinfandel, the RW Moore Zinfandel, Like Father Like Son, the Limerick Lane Zinfandel and a few of the Petite Sirahs, We joined their Holiday Magnum Club too.

We went to fifteen different wineries during our recent trip and this was in our top two. I highly recommend making a reservation if you are a fan of Zinfandels.

Thomas (and the wines) are the best!

By luvmimi127 |

These are some the best wines I’ve tasted. Thomas does a wonderful job of educating you on the history of each wine and it’s clear his passion for his job and the love of wines drives the conversation. We thoroughly enjoyed the wine, the conversation and the grapes from Bob himself.

Must see

By Chelsie |

The service was great and they were very knowledgeable about the area. The Zinfandel’s were perfectly balanced and smooth.

Biale Black Chickens

By kalamakid |

As Black Chicken members, we came here for a visit on a chilly January afternoon. We sat on the lovely warm patio and sipped the gorgeous wines of Biale. Soon, the skies cleared and we sat on rockers outside watching Atlas Peak and hills and vineyards, treated like royalty by lovely Alina. We stayed in Napa for a week, but our time at Biale was the most special of all.

Great wine and wonderful service

By Melanie B |

Tom Skinner is a pleasure at Robert Biale. He is incredibly knowledgable, funny and gracious. The wine is wonderful too. Ask for Tom for a great tasting that you will always remember!

Robert Biale - A unique Napa Experience

By allen b |

Robert Biale is always a one-of-a -kind experience! The wine educators do just that - educate - and not talk in "winespeak" to solicitate sales and try to impress.. They talk about the wines, vineyards and history of Robert Biale in a straight forward and knowledgeable way with no pressure and a lot of friendly convesation. And of course, the wines are terrific and somewhat unique in the Napa Valley. Amazing Zins, Petite Sirahs and old vine field blends. No Cabs or Chards here, just a fabulous experience among the vines with many treasured wines to enjoy.

Welcoming

By Andrew B |

I had a reservation, so I knew I would be welcomed, but was surprised to see a chalkboard with my name on it waiting for me at a beautiful table overlooking their vineyards. The wines were great, the tasting room staff was very conversational and provided some great insight into their wines, where the grapes were grown and were just nice to talk with. I'm looking forward to going back and tasting more wines in the future as they had already sold out of many (a very good thing and great endorsement of their wines).

Love the Biale experience.

By David |

Best place to enjoy some of the best wines in the Napa Region. Tom is always a great person to share the stories of Biale and the wines they share.

Love the Black Chicken...

By lynn s |

This is a must see winery if you enjoy red zinfadel's of different varieties. The winery is very relaxing and enjoyable. It is by appt only and there were only a few other couples, so that was nice. Our host Thomas, who just also happened to be from Chicago, was great about explaining the different wines and the story of the black chicken. The cost was $25.00 for about five generous tastings. Thomas actually brought our wines to our table on the scenic patio. There was no pressure to join the wine club or buy wine. Thomas was pleased we enjoyed the wines so much and we talked much about Chicago. We did decide on a nice bottle to bring home as well as a black chicken t-shirt. This is a small and casual winery and thoroughly enjoyed our personalized visit. We were treated more like guests then like customers and stayed for about 1 1/2hrs. If you like red zin's then you will enjoy this winery. Make an appt in advance.

Excellent Find!

By Ryan |

This was our second trip to the Napa Valley in the past 7 months. This time we stayed along the 29 corridor. We had some of the more popular wineries planned (Silver Oak, Cakebread, etc.) We had time for one more stop and while doing some research came across this gem. We had a relatively early appointment (10:30am). We arrived and were greeted by Tom who is a very experienced host. His stories about the wine, the history, etc. were all very informative. The wine was fantastic. Would definitely recommend this very quaint, informative, and delicious winery. Much more intimate experience than some of the more popular vineyards.

Outstanding Winery for Tastings

By PrestonKeo |

Amazing craft wines made from century+ vines some from land planted in the 19th century.
The Zins are elegant, silky delights, with fascinating expressions of Napa terroir.
I live in Napa, and this is one not to be missed if you like good red wine.
Very hospitable tasting staff.

Relaxing tasting

By Kara P |

Beautiful outdoor tasting with Mark - great highlight of what can be done with Zinfandel.
Mark was very personable and knowledgeable.

Great Zinfandels

By Ron F |

Our group made a reservation for a Private Library Cellar tasting at Biale which allows us to compare vintages and sample numerous wines. As it was a beautiful day we were seated outside on the porch immediately adjacent to the vineyards. Our host spent over an hour with us allowing us to tasted both the current releases but also releases from our last visit of three years ago. The tasting was informative and a great deal of fun, the host friendly and accommodating. Highly recommended for a tasting visit but be sure to call first.

Amazing experience at Biale!!

By LWTrinity |

We had the BEST wine tasting experience at Biale. The grounds are absolutely beautiful and Garry was a fantastic host. I absolutely love the wines here and really enjoyed getting to try some new ones. The perfect way to spend a relaxing afternoon in Napa!!

Amazing experience

By Bacchus |

Super nice place with a European touch, very nice and savvy people (shout-out to Mark), and great wines. The only thing we would recommend is to include some (black) cheese with the tasting ;-)

Great start to our Saturday morning

By gd1147 |

We visited on Labor day weekend and Saturday was tough to get appointments at most places. Thankfully when I called only a few weeks out Biale still had room for 2.

This was our second visit and the winery was much less crowded than the last time we had been there. This led to our hostess Jen being able to give us more attention and explain the wines / winery in detail which we didn't get on our first trip 4 years ago. The wines and the view were spectacular. I highly recommend a visit and the tasting fee of $25 is nominal considering what other places are charging for a lesser experience.

They also have a wine club that comes in all shapes and sizes and after a year they start to comp the shipping on the club as well which is a huge bonus if you don't live local.

Enjoy!

Best Zins in the valley

By Hawkeye1736 |

Famous for their Zin and some of the best in the valley. We tasted several of the Zins. Back during prohibition, Biale made his Zin and customers would call and ask for a dozen eggs and a black chicken. The key was the “black chicken”. Biale produced a Zin labeled as “Black Chicken” which they still produce today. If you like Zins, this is the place to go in Napa Valley. Tasting fee was $25.00 but waived with purchase.

Amazing Boutique Experience

By Marilynn P |

The beautiful setting and INCREDIBLE attention are second only to the wine which is the best I had the whole trip
Best Zinfandel ever. Do not miss. Make appointment....fabulous

Superb!

By Cassie B |

Small family owned winery with exceptional zinfandels. The Black Chicken blend is not to be missed! We loved learning about the winery history and our understanding of zinfandels so much we became members.

Fun History & Outstanding Wines

By Morgan S |

One of my absolute favorite places to visit in the valley. The grounds, the views, the delicious wines and friendly/knowledgable staff all mix together to form a can't-miss-experience. I won't spoil it here but make sure you get a chance to listen to the story of the winery and the family, it will only enhance your enjoyment and really brings a personal connection to the wines you will think about every time you open a bottle (which will be many once you have had a chance to taste what they so beautifully make and serve).

Terrific -- always

By wridav1 |

We first visited Biale over 13 years ago == when there was no tasting room, just a couple of chairs on the back porch. But the easy familiarity we enjoyed then is still present -- we visited again this week, got to sample a few barrels (a treat!) and enjoyed some great Zins and a fine petite syrah. This is a must place to go in Napa and the only place if you enjoy great Zinfandels!

Top Notch

By wphilbeans |

First time in Napa.. spent all day going to different vineyards and this one is special!
Pat is the man.

Fantastic!

By Ellen D |

We had a perfect time here. Three friends, we sat outside on the beautiful porch, and Tom poured tastings and chatted with us for two hours about the wines, about the growing and harvesting processes, about meal pairings, and, really, about life. "You like what you like," he told us. He even recommended a Cosco champagne!

Must stop for Great Zins

Robert Biale winery is about 5 to 10 minutes north of the town of Napa. Reservations are required. We tasted on the patio overlooking the grapes of course! Our server was wonderful, very full of knowledge and glad to spend the time with us to visit and teach us. Biale is all about the zins, and they are wonderful! In fact, we shipped home a case. Our visit lasted about an hour and a half, but it doesn't have to. Also, their tasting fee is waived with purchase.

Zinfandel paradise!!

By slkVisalia_Ca |

If you like zins, you absolutely must visit Biale. Multiple single, old vine sourced wines, each with a distinct taste.
A great background and history along with most friendly and helpful staff make this a must stop when in the Napa Valley. Try their signature Black Chicken.

The Best

By Stephen |

What a gem! We were met by Thomas who led us to the "first class" seats, rocking chairs overlooking the vineyard. The setting is only second to the wine we sampled! I would recommend to anyone.

Best Zinfandels in area

By mrgrumpy |

If you enjoy Zinfandel then this vineyard is a must to visit. Elana was an excellent host and in fact one of the best we have had this trip in Napa, she was so knowledgeable and gave us a full history of the estate. The wines, well they are certainly up with the best Zinfandels. Tasting area is nicely furnished and plenty space between guests. This will be certainly on our revisit vineyards on our next trip.

Great Napa experience

By dpsaz |

It's all about the wine at Biale. Expect that the visitors all know their wine and Biale delivers! Zins are superior throughout the lineup. The library taste reinforces how well these guys age. Consider spending an extra $20 for some older vintages for when you really want to impress a guest (and yourself)!

Girls Trip

By Christine T |

Out of all the wineries we visited in Napa, Biale was our favorite! The wine surpassed all the others and Tom our guide was an amazing story teller. We felt as though we were family that were traveling through and stopped in to hang out with our favorite uncle! Our entire group had a different favorite wine from the tasting which goes to show you there wasn’t a bad one in the bunch. And the view!!!!!! The winery is on the valley floor gazing out over the rolling mountains and local scenery. We even got to talk with the winemaker during our visit because it was harvest season and they were there working around the clock to produce those amazing wines. This place will always be in the lineup for our future Napa trips!

Wonderful Experience

By Carl B |

I have been going to Biale for over 6 years. They have excellent wines and make you feel like family when you go for a tasting. The tasting are by reservations and done in a relaxed manner outside on their patio. This is a family winery that emphasizes the preservation of old vine Zins and the respects the history of Napa.

July 2019 visit

By depdar1 |

My family and I visited the vineyard in July. We had a wonderful visit. The location is very close to Napa and is a must visit especially if you like Zinfandel. When we arrived, a table was set up for our family. The staff was friendly and explained the wines well. There was not any time that they tried to sell their wine club and in fact I had to ask about it. We loved the experience and will be back.

Beautiful experience!

By TaffieB |

We had the opportunity to experience wine-tasting with Elena at Robert Biale Vineyards. We were seated outside (it was a glorious day) next to the vines which was great. Elena was very knowledgeable about the wines and provided information/explanations of the various wines we tasted. We came home with a First Grade wine which was so delicious we couldn't leave without it. Thank you, Elena! We'll be back.

Enjoy Biale and host Garry

By Sam K |

What an experience! We had such a good time with Garry at Biale Vineyards. We expressly saved out wine club choice throughout our trip to Napa but immediately signed up for Biale's wine club based on both the wine tasting and vineyard experience itself. We would recommend anyone to visit Biale and try their wines. While we had one person in our party who doesn't particularly like Zinfandels, and Biale specializes in them, that person enjoyed their specific Zins!

Give it a try next time you are in Napa.

Seriously Stellar!

By Darby C |

Biale vineyards - Thank you for an amazing experience this afternoon! Your wines are out of this world - this coming from a true Zinfandel super fan. Thomas greeted us with such graciousness - we were a bit spellbound with his knowledge of the history of the Zin grape in Napa and can’t wait to dig into the case of wine we ordered on the spot.

Great tasting experience

By Sdgodfreymd |

If you love big reds this is the winery for you. Great zins and petite sirahs. Very attentive staff makes for a terrific personalized experience

Always a great taste at Biale...

By Greg F |

I highly recommend that travelers to the Napa Valley who enjoy hearty Zins and Petite Syrahs make a reservation to taste at Robert Biale Vineyards.

I've been a member for years and was picking up my fall selections today and tasting the latest releases. A couple came up, and said they didn't have a reservation to taste, but wanted to buy a couple of bottles of Biale Zin that they have been ordering at restaurants.

Black Chicken is the flagship Zin, but visit to get a taste of the varieties of Zinfandel and Petite Syrah that aren't on restaurant lists or at wine retailers. Biale specializes in small volume generational family owned vineyards to make a number of great wines you can only experience in the tasting room. Enjoy!

Great vibe, even better wine

By LaraLP7 |

My family of four (including two adult sons) visited Biale, and what a lovely time it was! We arrived on a cool morning to be seated at a table overlooking the vineyard, with a heater and blankets to keep us comfortable. Our host (I wish I could remember his name!) was so knowledgeable and approachable. The Zinfandels sold themselves...it was an easy decision to join the wine club. We spoke with another couple at the table next to us that shared how well Biale treats its members. There was a real feeling of family there. Can't wait to receive our first shipment!

Wine Tasting

By Joe T |

My wife and I took the Valley Vista tasting of Biale’s wines. It was wonderful! Our wine educator (Alina) was great, knowledgeable, informative, personable and friendly. Sitting on the winery porch, looking out over the vineyards with the hills in the backdrop was just perfect. The wines were tremendous! We ordered some shipped home so we could enjoy them all over again. I give this experience my highest recommendation

Wonderful wines and a great tasting experience!

By Furnman10 |

We’ve been visiting Biale winery for a number of years and it continues to be a highlight of our visits to the Napa valley.
The wines are among the finest Zins available. The staff have been there forever and they make you feel like part of the family. They are knowledgeable about their wines but are always a great source of information about other places to visit as well. If you pay them a visit I’m certain you will feel the same way!

If your a Zin fan, this is a must visit

By Marky M |

Tastings are by appointment, but don't let that scare you. It really is a great experience. The wines are wonderful foundational examples of the Zinfandel varietal which is what Biale is known for. But I have to say that the Petit Syrah can be a a monster. The number of single vineyard Zins this label has is a lovely taste of the regional terroir and they are always very good. The area for tasting is simple yet right out among the vineyards. Enjoy a broad breathed tasting if your a Zinfandel fan, it will be worth your while.

Friendly

By Ricardo W |

It's by appointment only and couldn't do the tasting, but they were very helpful to indicate where I could go.

Love it!!

By tboo04 |

Tom our Wine Educator was so informative. The wine tasting was amazing. Make appointment to attend the event. Would definitely go again!!

Great afternoon at Robert Biale Vineyards

By Bill Farmer |

The staff were friendly and welcoming (Jim, our host, was genuine, knowledgeable and entertaining). The wines of course were excellent - with the focus being Zinfandel.
The views from the patio are great - you are on the valley floor - I have to come back when the vines are full of grapes.
Family owned, family run, and it shows.

best zinfandels

By Tim R |

took us without an appointment. glad we stopped. great zins. favorite was the black chicken zin, but others were great as well. sent home several bottles. kaitlyn was very helpful and accommodating as we only had a limited time to taste there. would definitely recommend. also, wines reasonably priced. loved this place!

LOVELY ZINFANDEL

By Miles Archer |

Pleasant, informative visit. I've been a fine-wine aficionado for many years. I learned some things about wine here. An excellent experience here. Attractive grounds. I liked in particular the zinfandel.

Beautiful setting, enjoyable wines with full body.

By Bikingforhealth |

Our visit was high lighted with Thomas Molinari as our host. Thomas did an excellent job of explaining the History of the vineyard, described the fermentation and described the wines being sampled. Great Zinfandels and a very comfortable setting to taste. Great visit. Make an appointment before going.

Excellent Service, Excellent Wine

By Catherine T |

Wow. What a great first experience in wine country. My dad is a wine collector and shares his Biale collection with me all the time. He insisted our trip to Napa wouldn't be complete without a visit to the Biale vineyard. Per usual, he couldn't have been more on point. From the moment we walked in we were met with excellent customer service. Tom served us delicious wines while giving us the rich history and context behind all of the grapes. I highly recommend the R.W. Moore and Sangiovese - my two favorites from the tasting. You have to make a reservation, so be aware of this before attempting to walk-in...but it's worth every minute of it.

Our Favorite Vineyard!

By Jaclyn K |

We LOVED Biale! We had Roberto as our server and he was incredible. He was so much fun and so well versed about the wines. You could also feel his passion for both his role and the experience. We visited a few vineyards yesterday but Biale was absolutely our favorite. If you go definitely ask for Roberto!

Perfection!

By carol c |

The place is for folks that love a good hearty red wine. They do a wonderful and consistant job on the wines, this place never disappoints!

Make an appt today!

By carol c |

If you love great red wines this is the place to be, we have been in their club for years but when we have a chance to some and visit we always discover something else to love. Treat yourself and make an appointment to visit!

Great Zins!

By coastalgardener |

Our tasting was at 10 am with Tom Skinner. He had a great personality and spent a lot of time sharing history and winery stories with us We love Zinfandel and found Biale Zins to be top notch. Joined the wine club so we could enjoy their wines throughout the year!

Beautiful, Relaxing, & Delightful - Must Visit!

By M_Monteon |

The Biale team made our visit an absolute delight! We had carefully researched Napa wineries before our trip and we knew as soon as we saw the Biale winery specialized in Zinfandel & Petite Syrah, we had to go. The team greeted us, set us up on their beautiful patio overlooking a gorgeous view of the vineyard, & our host made our tasting a fantastic experience. We picked 3 bottles to take home with us & can’t wait to go back with friends!! Thank you again, Biale team!

Perfect vineyard visit

Had a wonderful visit to the Biale vineyard . Absolutely gorgeous views , great wine , super welcoming with your name on the table. Pat was phenomenal went out of his way to make our experience outstanding . Would HIGHLY recommend

Top Tier Zinfandels and Petit Sirahs in the Napa Valley

By Canon B |

This gorgeous property in the southern part of Napa Valley offers a more relaxed pace than the typical hectic Napa experience. The tasting area is on the patio, in amongst the vines. The wines are absolutely world class. Both of the couples who tasted the wines in our party joined the wine club. Our host was fun and relaxed and generous with some barrel tastings as well. I have loved Biale wines for many years. Now I love them so much more.

Worthwhile Napa stop

By David C |

Friendly, knowledgeable staff, calm and pleasant setting, and great wines! Very enjoyable experience.

Excellent zinfandels

By RiceWP |

I have long been a fan of Robert Biale zinfandels and it was wonderful to be able to stop by the tasting room and try several different varietals.

Our wine educator was very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our tasting immensely.

Go visit CHEERS great wine and people

By Dana K |

Their wines are FANTASTIC as well as our tasting. The hostess was very knowledgeable, great, friendly, and warm environment.

Fantatasic winery

By BettyBarkley |

Love this winery and joined them when we visited...which was planned. Love getting their wines throughout the year. We are have a "zin" party this coming weekend with this being one of the wines we will be comparing.

Great Zins!

By Amy G |

Biale is a winery specializing in Zinfandels. Our host Pat was incredibly! He was friendly, educating, and wanted us to have an enjoyable time. My dad owns a restaurant and Pat recently sold his so they hit it off talking shop. Pat knows and understands what he is selling. He even brought out dirt for us to smell to help understand. Following the tastings, he even took us out to the vineyard to show us the various styles of pruning the vines. It was incredible fascinating! I highly recommend this winery and make sure to ask about the “black chicken” to learn about the history of this vineyard.

Fabulous wine experience

By gregkosh |

I have been drinking Biale wines for close to 20 years and wanted to share my passion with some close friends who are not frequent wine drinkers. We went on the Biale Harvest Tour and my friends came away from it adoring the wines and appreciating the nuances of wine making beyond anything they had experienced before. The combination of seeing the vineyards, speaking with the head winemaker, barrel tasting and then sitting down to enjoy a flight of wines was very special for all of us.

Perfect winery Visit

By stevelotte |

Our first winery visit of our vacation in Napa. Our wine attendant was very knowledgeable and spent a lot of time explaining the different Zinfandels and so much more. We loved all the wines we tried during our tasting and bought some bottles to share with family and friends on special occasions as they are much higher end than our usual selections but so worth it.

Perfect

By Emactravels |

We stopped at Robert Biale because a friend from the area recommended it. What a great winery. We absolutely loved the wine (and are now enjoying it year round). The grounds are beautiful and the outdoor patio relaxing and laid back. We will be back for sure!

Be careful, they are all about Zinfandel here

By App_guy2014 |

The issue was of my own making. This was my first wine tasting and I did not realize this winery is totally focused on Zinfandel wines. We are not fans of Zinfandel and that's on me. Otherwise, it was a nice setting and the customer service was fine. I learned my lesson and checked what wines are offered at the other wineries we visited.

Zinfindel At It's Best

By Brian P |

If you are in Napa, this is a must visit. They are making outstanding zinfandel's here and the tastings are intimate and worth the trip. If you like zinfandel, this is your place.

A consistent favorite

By SusanJElDoradoHills |

We introduced friends to the winery and they were very impressed. Biale has long been one of our favorites --consistently excellent zins and petite syrahs, friendly and knowledgeable tasting room staff and pleasant outdoor seating. Make reservations to ensure that you get an outside table vs. standing at the counter in the tasting room. If you want a very special vacation, take one of their wines cruises. We will always cherish our Mediterranean trip with them

Wine Tasting

By deliverm1 |

I would highly recommend visiting Biale and becoming a member of their wine club. We have been members for many years, and went to pick up our wine yesterday, Jen took good care of us, and the wines were amazing.

Zinfandel specialist, relaxed tasting

By FunBoyOne |

We visited here for a relaxed wine tasting at a Zinfandel specialist. The owner sources grapes from across the area and the wine is labelled accordingly which is slightly different to a ‘domaine based’ winery. Whilst we liked the Black Chicken, so called because the owner was originally selling it under age, without a licence, our favourite was the Varozza.

A must stop for Zin

By ElGuru71 |

Robert Biale provides high quality wines in a laid back venue just north of downtown Napa. It has become a must stop for my trips to the region. While Biale wines a certainly not inexpensive, at around $50/bottle they provide a great value when compared to similar wineries. Most Biale wines are Zinfandels, so this is not the stop to try Cabernet and Bordeaux blends, but other than that, I cannot say enough good things about the Biale tasting room and their staff.

ZIN

By jimdink |

Some great Zins. We had a private tasting with Jim, great guy very knowledgable. We bought a few bottles and joined there club.Highly recommend a stop at Biale if your looking for some quality wine

The black chicken was an amazing wine.....

By irish9chicago_IL |

Our host Thomas, made the visit even better. Being from Chicago, and finding out he grew up by where we were from, I felt like I was visiting with an old friend and tasting amazing wines. The history behind the Black chicken is worth the trip in itself, the wines were very good, and this is a Napa must see. Thanks Thomas for being so patient with us when we were running late. Your hospitality was the best.

Fantastic Service and Zinfandel

By Peggy F |

I recently visited Biale Vinyards and was incredibly impressed with the staff, particularly our host, Elise, who expressed great enthusiasm for the wines, their history and in particular the Black Chicken! I was able to taste all the wines I wanted several times and was so in love with the red Zins and Elise's explaination of the origin and specific wine process used by the Biale's, that I joined the Black Chicken Society which allows you to receive 4 bottles every quarter for a discounted rate. I received my first shipment within 2 days of returning home from Napa. Elise was a fantastic host and her service and the Vinyard was the highlight of my trip! Thanks Elise!

Terrific winery with beautiful grounds

By Ed A |

Terrific winery with beautiful grounds. Very friendly staff (we had Pat J. this time) that are happy to chat or just leave you alone to enjoy their excellent wine and peaceful views. We've been wine club members for a couple of years and the Biale wines continue to impress us.

Nice Views, Bad Wine

By moviegal226 |

Let me address the elephant in the room before I write anything more: I didn't like the wine at Robert Biale Vineyards. It's not just that I didn't like it, I really, really didn't like anything I was poured. That being said, my experience was quite lovely and the hospitality was warm and friendly.

I booked a reservation for two people on a Monday at 10 am. I'm a GEMS member so Biale extended a 2-for-1 tasting offer, which meant two of us would get a seated tasting for just $30. I arrived right on time and wandered the grounds trying to find the entrance to the tasting room. It's a bit confusing but once you find the correct parking area, walk straight back as far as you can past the chicken coop (yes, really), towards the vines.

We were seated at a high top teak table with great views of the vineyard. The seating area was covered and a little chilly with the morning breezes blowing through. Our table was set with a wine glass for each of us and a tasting menu with price sheet. Nothing more. Of course, the ubiquitous Wine Club pamphlet was also present.

Since all of the wines we tasted were reds, I was surprised that there weren't any crackers or other small palate cleansers on the table. We weren't even offered water! Perhaps that would've helped me distinguish some of the flavors (although of course a cracker would not have made me enjoy the wines). At a minimum, it would've given me more gusto to power through some of the wines, especially the ones that I truly didn't care for.

There was one other table with two guests already seated, but they were a bit away from us so it felt very private. Our host, a laid back, hippie surfer dude type, was delightful. He spoke in such hushed tones that I felt like I needed to whisper back to him. All of this set a quiet and relaxing mood, which really added to the homey farmhouse atmosphere.

Biale makes a laundry list of different Zinfandels, but none appealed to my palate. The fruit is definitely a softer style (with what the winery likes to call "nuanced flavors"), but I just call it flat and boring. I do tend to enjoy the jammy, bold, and spicy Zins, and this isn't where you'll find that style.

We tried five wines at our tasting: the 2016 Black Chicken Zinfandel ($48, light and thin in both color and flavor), the 2016 Old Kraft Zinfandel ($52, tasted like an identical twin to a pinot noir), the 2016 Varozza Zinfandel ($52, restrained old world style), the 2016 Royal Punishers Petite Sirah ($48, the darkest in color but boring fruit), and the 2015 Dessert Wine ($65, not too sweet and aged in Burgundian oak). I found all of the wines to be overpriced for what they were, but we left with a bottle of the dessert wine because it was the one we sort of enjoyed. Perhaps our host picked up on the fact that we didn't really like the wines because he waived both of our tasting fees, which I thought was extremely generous.

I'd caution you to do a little research before booking a tasting here, and make a point to try at least one or two of these wines beforehand. It felt a little awkward since it's extremely rare to go to a wine tasting and enjoy nothing that was poured.

This is a very leisurely tasting so allow at least 90 minutes. Even if you aren't a fan of any of the wines, you'll surely appreciate the view.

Zin

By James |

Our favorite winery in Napa and Sonoma. Longtime family business. Many great Zins year after year. Beautiful safe view from newly expanded outdoor patio.

Fun

By MyOpionion |

By appointment only but outstanding service and at this time of year this 14,000 case producing mostly zin and petite syrah winery is about out of wine. Black Chicken is the staple and a great story but 4 of us left only after buying 29 bottles.....yes, 29! Try it, you’ll like it!

One of worst wine evperiances ever

By andrewe7162 |

Have visited hundreds of vineyards across multiple countries and this place would have to be in my bottom five.
The staff knowledge of the wine was just a none event. The wines themselves were okay but nothing to get excited about, no tasting notes minimal info from the staff, when enquiring as to the origin of the particlar wine you just got a rough wave in the direction of the contractors direction.
To say that the staff seem to have no passion about wine is an understatement.
Would have been good to get some tasting notes, explanation of soil type were the grapes where sourced, description of the microclimate where they were grown, processes involved in production, good or great year for vintage or how long spent in barrel etc, but alas none of this.
Would give this place a huge miss!

Zincerely the best

By Betsy K |

Tom was our wine guy and he was fabulous along with the wines we tasted!!! We went to 6 different tastings when we were in Napa and this was by far our favorite!!

Seven for Zin

By Mike |

Biale is the place, the only place for wine country zinfandel. Incredible wines that profile so many small growers in both valleys. Make reservations. Relax. Enjoy the view. Listen to the stories.

Very personalized, our favorite

By nctraveler315 |

We love this winery! We had an appointment and they had a table set up for us on the patio in the shade right next to the zinfandel vines. It was such a beautiful setting. I felt like I was sitting on a friend's back porch sipping wines. Our server came out and sat down with us and talked to us as she brought out each wine, adding to the feeling of visiting with a friend. She did not sit with us the whole time, after she poured and talked to us a bit she would go back inside and return a few minutes later with another wine. There were no other guests there, it felt very personalized. Highly recommend a stop here. We will be back!

Beautiful scenery

By Daniel B |

Unbelievably beautiful spot. Tremendous experience. We had a great time. Very interesting wines. Would go back in a heartbeat.

Killer Zins!!

By Mike Z |

I have always found it interesting when in discussion with fellow oenophiles that more of them have not experienced the wonderful Zins from Biale. That's fine, as I will continue to tout their merits as long as necessary. This is absolutely our favorite Zinfandel producer. I am able to purchase a few of their Zins locally, starting with the exceptional Black Chicken Zinfandel. However, if you are new to Biale, do yourself a favor and become a Black Chicken Society member by joining their wine club. That way you can experience all of their incredible offerings and choose your own favorites. Enjoy!

Biale Rocks!

By james g |

Biale is always fantastic. Great wine. Fantastic setting. Amazing team of people. They take great care of us whenever we visit!

Taste's like Chicken

By Jojo |

This is a good winery, and truly a place that makes wine...not a tasting factory. You need to make an appointment, even if you want to show up to buy, though this seemed more of a red-tape thing since it was raining in Dec when we showed up and the place was dead.

The wines are good, all Zins and Petit Syrahs and in the mid. 40s to high 50s...unfortunately, we didn't think they were as good as the reviews...the black chicken, their flagship, was as goods as the others.

The gripe - tastings 23.95, per person...which is normal, but to get them refunded you have to buy 4 bottles, per tasting...that's a bit steep given their "cheapest" bottle costs $40...yes, that means you have to spend over $300 for two people, to comp the tasting fee...we didn't know this and felt ripped off. The pours were small, we tasted 6 wines. If you are really rich, this is a good place to make you less so :)

Great Zinfandels here

By DianaBWakeForest |

Visited in mid- October with 2 friends. We had a seated tasting outside near the vineyards with beautiful mountain views. The hostess was friendly and told us a lot about the origin of the winery and the wines while we were enjoying them. This winery focuses on Zinfandel. I prefer Cab Sauv, but still ended up buying 3 bottles here as their Zins are fantastic. This is a smaller winery and we enjoyed a very relaxed tasting experience here.

Beautiful, Relaxing, Fun, and Delicious

By Jim K |

We discovered this gem of a winery when a family member highly recommended it to us, and after our first tasting experience we immediately joined the Robert Biale Vineyards Wine Club. The setting among the Zinfandel vineyards is beautiful and relaxing, the tasting is great fun—especially the tales of the vineyard's origins—and the wine is delicious. Now, we always stop by for a tasting every time we visit Napa County. Make sure to add it to your itinerary when visiting the Northern California wine country.

Best Petite Syrah!

By mcsnotty |

Great Zinfandels in Napa but the Petite Syrah were quite special! Beautiful view of the vinyards and hills.

The big wineries are great, but this is the gem of the small ones!

By Nick S |

Robert Biale Vineyards has been at it for a long time, but they've never lost that personal touch or family feel. Their Black Chicken Red Zinfandels alone are worth the trip. We were delighted to find out we also loved their Syrahs and desert wine (port). We loved it so much we became members and cannot wait for our first shipment to arrive in the mail.

We made reservations in advance, which their website says you must do. We had a nice picnic table outside and our server would pour us samples for us to taste and describe the differences between them. Between wines they let us taste grapes off the vine (DELICIOUS!!) and take tons of photos of their property. They showed us their "back room" where a guy was stirring all of their new wines.

It's a tiny little place right outside of the city of Napa and I recommend it to everyone who visits. Yes, go see the Beringers and the Mondavis, but do NOT miss this place!!

Beautiful and relaxing tasting with great people

By Jennifer B |

Had a beautiful visit to the vineyard. I’ve been a Black Chicken fan for a while but ended up buying two new wines this time. The tasting area is in a perfect spot. So beautiful and relaxing. And ever single person I have met on their staff is wonderful and personable. And it was so interesting to hear the stories behind the wines. This is my favorite winery by far.

Great Zin!

By Floydova |

We have loved the Biale Black Chicken for years so we were excited to do a tasting while in Napa with friends. It is well worth scheduling a reservation and spending quality time enjoying the wine and learning about the winery and their history. We liked everything we had and it’s a treat to be offered other wines that are beyond those selected for tasting. Our host learned our preferences and offered additional wines that he knew we would love- and he was right. A great winery and a great afternoon!

Great Zins

By Brimmy1 |

We ended up here based on a recomendation from an employee from another winery after we expressed our like of Zinfandel. We would like to thank that other winery employee for this tip. We loved all of the wines we sampled and became Members of the Black Chi ken Society! Do yourself a favor and make a reservation....you won't be disappointed.

2021 Wine Tour

By John D |

Great experience at Robert Biale. Travelled 2000 miles and had one day, three wineries, and this was one we chose, and it was recommended by a friend. Beautiful setting and great wines. First Zin experience. Loved the Black Chicken - both the wine and the story! We’ll be back.

The hidden gem of Napa

By lovestotravel177 |

When we arrived at the vineyard we happened to meet Robert Biale who was walking in from the vineyard. He showed us to the tasting room and was very kind and personable. Our wine guide was knowledgeable and answered all our questions. He gave us great suggestions on local activities to do the next day. The wine was great, and the atmosphere was so serene.

Long Live Black Chicken

By JoAnne M |

This is such a special place that I considered not writing a review for fear everyone would discover this gem! We have been in the "Black Chicken" wine club for about 10 years. They rolled out the red carpet for our recent visit. Jen conducted the tasting and between her talent and the delicious wine we sent cases to several places. This is the essence of an intimate wine tasting with people who are passionate and take pride in their product. Don't go if you want the Disney atmosphere of a giant commercial winery....do go, if you appreciate one on one attention by experts. Please note* to make an advance reservation with as much notice as possible. You will become a black chicken fan too!

Who Knew I Liked Zinfandel?

By tmmrd |

This place changed my mind about zinfandel. Already can't wait for my first wine club shipment. The setting is rustic, and the staff is gracious - the vineyard has a family feel, not stuffy or haughty. By appointment only, so call ahead. Minutes from downtown Napa.

Nice place, attentive service and good zinfandel wines

By Mauro K |

Reservation required. $25 per person for 5 good wines tasting, if you purchase 3 bottles they exempt the fare.. The people are very knowledgable and nice. The ambient is good. If you are looking for a nice zinfandel tasting go there.

Extraordinary experience

By Michael |

We have been doing wine tasting in several locations across the world, but none of those visits was such a great time like here. Accompanied by Bill, a great story teller and charming person, we spent almost 2 hours at Robert Biale Vineyards, listening to the winery history and trying some outstanding zinfandels. It is a place like no other in napa - they do not make cabs, but specialized with zinfandel. Since we have tried the black chicken once in Chicago, we knew that we need to come here. And it was such a great choice. We had so much fun, gained lots of interesting knowledge, tried lovely wines and did some substantional shopping. If you are around, you must not miss Robert Biale Vineyards. There are people with passion, it is not commercial and worth single penny. I am somehow speachless when I look at the pics from there ;)

Yummy Zinfandels here!

By Allison |

We were in Napa with our adult children and were fortunate enough to be able to attend a special event tasting of local Zinfandel wines. Everyone at Robert Biale were so welcoming and gracious. We were treated like friends invited over for a tasting.
The wines were introduced before they were poured so we knew what to look for when we tasted. Such a fun time.
Put Robert Biale on your short list to visit. Friendly people, stunning views and delicious wines!

Wonderful vineyard

By Sharon H |

Vineyard of the Black Chickens! Had a great trip here. Given a wonderful, informative tour and had a family style picnic lunch. A must see vineyard when in Napa.

Another Great Tasting

By Kelly D |

I guess I picked right, this visit, on where to taste. As my reserved tastings were all amazing. A mostly Zinfandel tasting, The wine educator went above and beyond explaining the vineyards the wines were coming from, and the naming rights from different vineyards in the Napa area.
One thing that really gives this vineyard a leg up, is it is still more "affordable" in terms of Napa prices.

Red Zin doesn't get any better

By divefan |

We were treated very well on our private, reserved tasting. Biale has a rich and colorful history. We love their Black Chicken signature Zin, now they have a clean and fun chicken coop with black chickens strutting around! Nice shaded outdoor seating within a few feet of the vines.

Lovely variety of Red Zinfandel's

By ToshiMom |

Learning that we were a fan of Red Zinfandel's our Napa-based friends chose Biale as one of three stops in our day. The grounds were lovely and we were seated on the covered patio. Thomas took us through the history of Biale and the wines, as we chatted and sampled a lovely variety of wines. He was knowledgeable and quite entertaining. It was hard to chose which we liked best, but both couples settled on a bottle of the Stagecoach Vineyard Zinfandel to take home. Delightful wine; delightful visit.

A Beautiful venue Tucked Away. All of your staff surround you with a family feeling. Thank You for an incredible experience. Valerie and Dennis

An off the beaten path treasure in Napa

By Vacation32395492425 |

Robert biale was highly recommended to us by a friend when she visited Napa and we completely understand why. The hospitality, knowledge and quality of the wines is just a start. We had one tasting scheduled but loved it so much we came back the very next day to do it all over again. It's a slice of heaven in Napa and Thomas was our host and we cannot rave about him enough! The passion and sheer joy he has for what he does comes through heavily! It was our favorite spot of our 5 day honeymoon in Napa! Must must must visit and if you can, ask for Thomas!

Zinfandel Heaven! Highly recommend!

By Kimr77 |

Nothing but glowing praises! Our group of 7 loved this place so much, most are now wine club members! :-)

Pat was wonderful...full of knowledge and jokes! We loved every wine we tasted, and the vineyard's history made it that much better. We were able to stroll through the vineyard, taste grapes from the vine, and see some of the wine making process. Pat even helped us with lunch reservations...talk about amazing hospitality!

We could not have loved it more, and will most definitely return!

One of our Napa Favorites

By kimgd |

Make a reservation. Treat yourself to a casual, laid-back tasting of the finest Zins and Petite Syrahs in our land. Or, make a reservation for the Harvest Tour which is a small, more personal, opportunity to see the vineyards, the fermentation process, enjoy a taste from the barrels, pairings with wine and cheese, etc. The setting is beautiful and most tastings are outdoors on the porch (weather-permitting) overlooking the vineyard and chicken coop:-) Ask about the history of black chicken. . Sooooo good!

Go for the Zins and all fine wine.

By Paul D |

Have been going to the Biale Winery for at least 20 years and the experience keeps getting better and better. The staff and setting are outstanding and the Zin's they produce are the best.
The SF Chronicle just selected the Robert Biale Wiinery as one of the top 25 wineries to visit in the Napa Valley and the winery with the best Zins.
As a family owned winery with a long history Biale is able to delivery great wines with a personal friendly service.
Something that should not be missed!

Great Napa Zin’s in A Great Setting

By Alex |

We weren’t familiar with Robert Biale wines prior to our visit but we really enjoyed our experience with Alina who presented the wines at the tasting room so much we walked out with 6 bottles. Biale is a small production vineyard that focuses on Zinfandel. He makes several varieties of the varietal all very approachable and they will age well if cellared correctly. The tasting room is outdoors on a patio that overlooks the vineyard. Great views of the countryside. And ask about the history of the “Black Chicken”. They will ship your wines if you prefer.

Amazing Winery With Stunning Views, Wine, and Guides

By Lauren1773 |

What a stunning, intimate winery with amazing wine! Our tour guide, Patrick, was equally amazing! This was the first winery on our recent trip to Napa, and I’m so glad it was, as it started the trip off right. Patrick was a fountain of knowledge, and we felt like we were on our own private tour at our own private vineyard. The views are just spectacular, as is the wine, especially the signature Black Chicken Zinfandel. A friend who is a Napa local recommended this winery, and I am so grateful they did! I understand why this hidden gem is one of their favorites out of the 500+ wineries in the area! Make sure you make time to stop at Biale, you won’t regret it!

Pasquale and marylou

We enjoyed our wine tasting experience. Tom was a great host, very inviting, friendly and knowledgeable.
The wine selection is outstanding. We recommend visiting for a great home feel and great wine.

Meh...

By maryasbux |

Our tasting was for 3:30, we called to say we were running 10 minutes late yet still greeted with "They never should have scheduled a tasting this late, we close at 4." No comp on tasting even though we bought bottles. Felt very unwelcome & uncomfortable;( In an area with overall great hospitality, this fell woefully short:(

Beautiful experience with Alina & amazing wines!

By Mary Eason |

We had a wonderful tasting experience and learned about our new favorite zin/ps blend with Alina in June! Beautiful view, beautiful weather (lucky us) and just a pleasant learning experience. Hope to come back soon!

A Great Day at A Very Important Winery

By Francis S |

I came with folks from my restaurant staff and they took incredible care of us. There were 10 of us. This is an extraordinary winery we've been buying from for 25+ years. Our visit was a great experience and brought a better understanding to how these great wines are made.

Very private and great wines

By Daniel P |

You need to schedule a tasting here, as they try to only have on group at a time. We were the first of the day, and spent an hour sitting on the patio tasting wines and looking at the vineyards. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. And the best part is, the wines are GREAT. Watch out for black chickens!

Wonderful tasting

By Jet12193796901 |

We did the estate experience with Andrew and had an amazing visit. We loved the stories of the winery’s history and family heritage and how that shapes their wines also. The outside tasting area was intimate and gorgeous. Overall a great visit and going home with several bottles of delicious wine.

Unforgettable visit

By LLITN |

We have met Robert Biale during a local wine festival. As the owner himself, he is one of the most genuinely nice, down to earth, friendly and overall the nicest guy. His staff are super friendly and they made us feel like we were apart of their family in within minutes. Their Zinfandel is the best that I have ever tasted coming from Napa region. It's consistent from year to year. Definitely one of the best winery to visit.

Micro Honeymoon Tasting

By Patricia D |

My husband and I came here for our Micro Honeymoon. The location is very nice and they had a sign waiting for us at our table which I though was a nice touch. The wines are good. The staff was friendly and welcoming. Our Wine Connoisseur Alina made us feel very welcomed and even recommenced a few places for us to dine at.

Both Friendly and Educational

By Rob W |

We visited Robert Biale as one of the six vineyards we visited during our stay in Napa Valley. We visited some of the major wineries, some smaller ones, but I must say Robert Biale Vineyards stood out. Sitting outside overlooking their zinfandel vines as they melt into the hills, we really enjoyed the scenery. But more than that, the host was fantastic, and we are really glad we chose this as one out of the many wineries in the area.

Great Wines and Great Tasting

By Eileen G |

This was one of our favorite tasting experiences in Napa Valley. The place is very low-key and unpretentious. The zins are great. We joined the Black Chicken Society and are enjoying the wine shipments.

Know the code

By Michele R |

This is a must try. Biale is known for their Zins and we were not diappointed. This is appt only. We became wine club members.

Love the Black Chicken

By Jenny N |

I visited this winery based on a recommendation of a friend. It did not disappoint. Great Zinfandels. The Black Chicken is wonderful. The staff is really friendly and welcoming. I ended up joining the wine club on my second visit. I recently attended one of their events, a BBQ. What a wonderful experience. The co-founders are pouring wines and talking about the wines. They generally appreciate their wine club members. I belong to 5 wine clubs but this is my favorite.

A perfect wine tasting experience

By The Simple Salty Life |

We were pleasantly surprised to see a charming patio area, filled with shade, and our names reserving a table just for the two of us when we arrived.

We were enthusiastically led through a flight of wines, in such a relaxing atmosphere that I could have spent all afternoon there. The endless rows of vines with the backdrop of the Vaca mountain range make the perfect setting! We then stayed to enjoy 2 glasses of our favorite blend, and brought a bottle home.

Recommendation: Get the Black Chicken Zinfandel. This wine changed our view of red zinfandel forever! Yum.

Genuine Napa Family Winery

By Bob Yeend |

There's a wonderful, relaxing aura at Biale's. Robert grew up in some of the vineyards and has been involved his whole life. The wine is excellent and the historical tales are not only fascinating, but true!

The best Zin in the valley

By TCRD2018 |

Biale Vineyards are one of our most favorite places to visit when in Napa. The tastings and scenery are unmatched. We are club members for many years and feel like family when we visit, we are treated with warm welcomes and surprise sips. The experience and the wine is amazing each and every visit.

Solid winery, peaceful setting

By TravelgalCathy415 |

Wine tasting resumed in the Napa Valley with safety measures in place and Robert Biale offered outdoor wine tasting. (Tours are not being conducted at many wineries due to the pandemic). We tried 4 wines while taking in the scenery in mid-September, right in between the 2 major fires in the area. If you enjoy reds, try them all. Our favorite was the Black Chicken. See more of my reviews on Napa Valley wineries on Instagram @travelgalcathy415.

Robert Biale... simply perfect

By Joan F |

Robert Biale Vineyards is a must visit for anyone traveling to Napa. Greg Miller, who led us through the tasting was not only knowledgeable about the wines and the rich history of Biale, but truly brought us through of journey through Napa valley and the varietals produced here.
We will be back and as an event professional, I certainly will be pushing my clients to come and enjoy the hospitality and amazing wines at Robert Biale!

Lovely vineyard!!!!

By Lovick16 |

The concierge in our hotel recommended this vineyard as we were looking for a more boutique experience rather than the 'big box' winery's. We LOVED the wine and the experience. Alyse was pouring the tastings for us and even sat and joined us at one point. She was knowledgeable about the wines and shared some of the prohibition era stories with us! ... Back in the days of prohibition, a "black chicken" was code for a bottle of wine! This winery specializes in Zinfandels, we Definitely found room in our luggage to take home a few bottles. This was one of our favorite wineries, it was laid back and relaxing, the opposite of many of the vineyards in the valley, there are no big bus tours here but the wine is amazing and we even got of meet the owner Bob Biale!!! Loved this winery!!

A Must Stop

By jane g |

A beautiful, relaxing setting where you can enjoy some of the best wines in the valley. The pourers are very knowledgeable on all things wine and on the history of the valley.

Lovely boutique winery

By Debbie N |

We visited the winery on a beautiful September day. A table on the covered patio in the vineyard. Garry served us 4 different wines, explaining where the grapes were grown and the story behind the "Black Chicken" Zinfandel. We were encouraged to relax and take our time enjoying the wine and the setting. It was a glorious visit and we purchased 1 bottle and took info about their membership options!

A Must Zinfandel Tasting

By Bob B |

I learned a lot about the valley history as well as the history of this wine from Pat. Great help in understanding the differences between planting locations. Of course, the wine is always my favorite. I love Zinfandel and this particular winery specializes in them. The tasting is adjacent to the growing vines and that is delightful. I can't wait to get back after I drink the wines I bought so I will be able to make even more educated purchases. It was fun, relaxing, and exactly what a wine tasting experience should be.

Fantastic Wine, Beautiful Setting, Great Tasting

By Andrea |

The tasting at Robert Biale Vineyards was a great experience all around. The staff was helpful and gracious, the fall setting was beautiful and relaxing, and the wines were delicious. I would absolutely recommend visiting. I know I'll be going back to Robert Biale and taking friends for this tasting next time I visit Napa.

Beautifully crafted Italian varietals from small family winery

By klaviercat |

This winery is barely outside the town of Napa proper but you will nbever find it unless you look for it. Beautiful Italian varietals and blends in a quiet, comfortable setting. Highly recommended

Had a lot of fun hanging out with Alina and drinking some really good Zins and Petite Sirah! We highly recommend a visit to this laid back and scenic winery, and hope to return to Biale in the near future.

Delightful and Delicious

By Regan J |

You wouldn't think a wine-tasting experience in November would be the best of times, but our November experience at Robert Biale was delightful. Four of us took an overnight trip to Napa to celebrate a birthday and many years of friendship. My husband and I had purchased the wine-tasting at a charity auction - along with some excellent Biale Wines - and were looking forward to a wonderful afternoon. We lucked out with the weather and the wines! Our host, John, was a wonderful storyteller with a great depth of knowledge. The almost two hours of tasting in the beautiful setting in Napa flew by. Highly Recommended!

Intimate, personalized experience. Great people, great history, background and wines. Have been there twice and will be there again whenever back to the region.

Biale is not to be missed

By Phil K |

This winery, its history and craft, are truly amazing and not to be missed. The wines were phenomenal, the storytelling from our wine expert Tom kept us on the edge of our seats, and we soaked in the glorious scenery. Tasty and memorable zins made and bottled in small quantities are their expertise and come from some of the oldest vines in the valley. We joined the wine club and look forward to enjoying these wines and home and will definitely visit again.

Beware of the Black Chicken...

By Joel A |

Our experience with Robert Biale was amazing... it all started with our tasting reservation that was set up for us on June 6, 2018 with a nice sign with our names and at a table overlooking the vineyards and mountains. Stunning. Our sommelier was Jen Lee and she did a thorough job of educating, explaining their stories, (you know the story behind Black Chicken is a good one) and giving us time to relax and enjoy the vino. Great experience and a must-do when you are in Napa Valley next. -Joel and Carolyn, Frederick Maryland

Great Zins and Great People

By MICHAEL ASHWORTH |

If you have avoided drinking Zinfandel then come to Biale and change your mind. We were helped by Caitlin who did a great job of explaining the wines and talking about the winery and surrounding area. The winery is relatively small but the wines are great tasting and well priced and the people at Biale are super friendly. Come on down, sit on the patio and drink some wine and join the fans of the Black Chicken.

May 27,2019 Biale Tasting visit

By randals120 |

We’ve been “Black Chicken” club
members for years. Have family in Napa that used to live “down the road” from Biale
and we’d pass their sign on Ranch Road many times on visits not realizing what amazing Zin & Petite Sirah were there. We finally discovered Zins and ZAP (Zinfandel Associates & Producers) which led us back to Biale. Joined the club years ago and have been members ever since. As NE New Jersey residents we attended a couple of wonderful Biale Club sponsored dinners in NYC at Michael Lomanaco’s Porterhouse and Del Frisco’s. Today we stopped in for a tasting outside on a beautiful day overlooking the vineyards and eastern valley hills. Also enjoyed watching the beautiful blue birds swooping in and out of the rows while feeding on insects and said hello to some real, live, Black Chickens. Also had a pleas time chatting and trading wine and life stories with our hospitality rep Jim. A wonderful stop. They also sell “The Winecheck Bag” which Air Alaska checks for free! Works great!
Enjoy and don’t miss Biale for a wonderful, laid-back tasting with great folks.

Just beautiful

By MrsJoeyD |

We spent the day driving Silverado Trail in search of great wineries. We were looking for a Zinfadel and told to visit Robert Biale. When we arrived there was a sign indicating we needed an appointment but the woman working at the bar inside was happy to do a tasting with us even without the appointment. I am sorry I forget her name, but she was very informative and we felt very comfortable here. The vineyard was gorgeous with lots of outdoor seating overlooking the vines. It was a very laid back and relaxed vineyard and I am glad we stopped here! I probably would have bought a bottle from the tasting menu if I hadn't already bought a bottle at Clos Du Val up the road.

Hidden gem

By mike vigs |

Lovely small vineyard slightly off the beaten track. Refreshing staff put their heart’s into the entire process of wine tasting and the history behind the Black Chicken! Wonderful experience

Ahhhhh...

By PanAm007 |

On our first trip to Napa, we visited five vineyards, but none was as satisfying as our visit to Biale Vineyards. We had been fans of his wine for many years and once in Napa, we HAD to go to "the nerve center." You need to call ahead and make a reservation - they are serious about it as we saw two people turned away without. Our guide, Steve, was great - even though he had to split his time between several tables. EVERY wine he poured was a gem - in contrast to other places where one would be great, the next one "eh". Steve knew a ton of company lore and even more about winemaking - a subject he obviously loves. In the end we bought a few bottles (their dessert wine is a stunner!) and had them shipped home. Unfortunately they were out of Black Chicken t-shirts or I would have bought one too! THis is well worth the trip. (Note: have something to eat before you go as there is no food available, not even something to nibble on.) The grounds are beautiful, surrounded by vineyards. (what else?!)

I never met a wine I didn't like!

By Linda R |

Visited the vineyard several years ago and had a wonderful experience. As a result, we joined the wine club and continue to get top notch wines. Our next shipment should arrive in a few weeks and we look forward to sharing our stash with fellow "Biale Black"
fans.

Amazing 40th Birthday Present for wife

By Brad C |

My wife’s favourite wine is Zinfandel. While visiting San Fran for her 40th Birthday we visited Robert Biale Vinyards for a tasting. It was an amazing experience.

Pat went the extra mile to celebrate my wife’s birthday. It was the highlight of our weekend!

Spectacular Zins!

By Chris C |

Lovely setting and spectacular Zins! Our host Bill was so wonderful and we enjoyed the stories about Aldo and his black chickens! Cheers!

Watch out for Black Chicken its addictive

By Scubascott1980 |

This was my second visit in 3 years to Robert Biale. The first visit we were referred there after a tasting at a neighboring vineyard. Both times it was excellent. We did not have a reservation but showed up anyway. The staff was friendly and although they were with a group were happy to accommodate us for a tasting. The tasting was outside in the shade overlooking their beautiful vineyard. The host sat with us while we sipped their amazing wines and explained each one. This is one of my favorite vineyards in NAPA. We bought 4 of their wines to take back home to Boston.
A great small quiet vineyard with excellent wine.

Great service with Fantastic Wine

By Willisvb |

My wife and I booked a tasting at Biale on 11/3 and had an amazing experience. Andrew Lincoln was our personal "guide" and did a fantastic job. He was personable, very knowledgeable and had great sense of humor. The wine is delicious. We had drank Black Chicken before and the other wines we had at Biale were just as good if not better. It was our anniversary trip, Andrew had a nice "Happy Anniversary" board out for us which my wife loved.

Biale Black Chicken NEVER disappoints

By David H |

My wife and I were introduced to Biale Black Chicken Zinfandel at Aureole in Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas in 2013 and we've been hooked. Since that night we have visited the vineyard twice and have become "Black Chicken Society" members as well as repeat customers in between wine club shipments.

The staff in the tasting room are very laid back and mellow. They have always offered us tastings beyond what was on the menu that day and are always happy to repour a favorite or two, or three. We have not had the pleasure yet of walking the grounds or sitting outside due to the weather on our two visits but we will be returning soon.

If you like Zinfandel done as it should be from some of the best and most historic Zinfandel vineyards in Napa and Sonoma, Robert Biale must be on your list.

My favorite memory was during our trip in December of 2013 right after Christmas. They had all these black chicken ornaments all over the place and we did everything short of stealing one to bring home since they were not on offer for sale. My wife still jokes about it this day always asking to have them throw one in my next order.

I do not recall what the tasting fee is, however it is waived for wine club members.

Another great visit

By Karsy68 |

My husband and I are Biale club members and decided to do a Zinner Sanctum tasting during a recent visit to Napa Valley. During this tasting you compare the current released vintage with a library selection. For our tasting it was the Founding Farmers, Monte Rosso and Aldo's Vineyard Zinfandels. It was interesting to see how the Zinfandel changes when it ages.

Our tasting was with Jen and is was relaxing to sit outside on the couches trying the different wines. We took a walk out to the vines and learned A LOT about pruning, disease and harvest. We did a lot of tours and tastings during this trip and I think this was the most informative on vineyard management. Jen was up to the task of answering all of our questions.

We're a fan of Biale wines and shipped home a case and a half of Zinfandel, Syrah and Barbera. If you are also a fan of Zin, it's definitely worth your time to make an appointment.

Beautiful setting, amazing wines and wonderful host!

By Paula T |

We spent a wonderful morning tasting the amazing wines at Biale. Out of the seven tastings so far this trip, Biale was hands down our favorite. As soon as Thomas found out we loved Zinfandel he proceeded to expertly guide us through a very broad sampling of not only their zins but also some petite sirahs. He was an outstanding host/educator. We fell in love with their wines and joined their wine club. Such a perfect morning!

Intimate yet fun setting, always greeted like family.

By 1ARFer |

Staff is warm and friendly, yet maintain a professional pace. Although famous for the Black Chicken, I prefer this years release of the Petite Syrah. Winery is cute, clean and fun. Be sure to visit when the mustard is blooming, gorgeous.

Zins are the best

By Bruce H |

Biale is one of my favorite wineries. We have been there three times now and they are always so accomodating. I joined the wine club during our first visit. The history behind the wines (Black Chicken) is so interesting. Loved the outdoor tasting this past summer. Also sent some friends there a few years back and they took great care of them. Wonderful staff, owners and wine maker. Smaller and not so commercial.

Great place.

By Jim D |

We have known about and enjoyed their wines for years. Have never visited until today. A wonderful place. Our hostess Alina was knowledgeable and great company. Nice view from the back patio. Enjoyed our time there.

Fantastic - Especially for Zinfandels

By The_Loup_Garou |

OK, we met Robert Biale at a Zinfandel event years ago, and became fans. We have also belonged to their Black Chicken Wine Club, and their Hillclimber Syrah Club, when it was active.

For our anniversary, we added them to the list that our concierge at Meadowood had booked, because we love the wines so much. "Laid back," is my descriptor for the Biale Vineyards. The staff is great, and show a definite love for the wines.

We "sneaked into the winery," as we wanted to see how things operate for all, and not just wine club members, and it worked. No one recognized us, and we had a great afternoon. While I have all of their recent releases in my cellar, it was special tasting them with the staff, in their "home," or mostly so.

If one is a fan of Zinfandel (IMHO, the best, of the best), Syrah, and Petite Sirah (please not spelling differences, as there is always a bit of discussion on the derivation of both grapes, and different wineries use different spellings - plus the Aussies call Syrah Shiraz), there is no better visit, than Biale.

Because they are small, and the tastings are structured, you will want to make a reservation, but you can use your own name, and not "Meadowood Guest," as we did.

Our favorite winery to visit in Napa

By SF Steve |

We are an SF-native family living in the East Bay, so luckily, Napa is a short drive from home. I say "lucky" because we are a wine-loving family, so living next to the Wine Capital of the U.S. is very fortunate. Adding to our luck, is Robert Biali Vineyards. Zinfandel is our favorite wine, and Biali is our favorite Zin. We had our first Biali more than 25 years ago and we've enjoyed it ever since.

We are member of the winery's "Black Chick Society," so we get four deliveries per year. You would think that would be enough, but you just can't get enough Biali. In the past couple of years, my wife and I have been visiting the winery for a 'tasting' at least once per month. Yes, we've 'tasted' every Biali but we don't just go for the wine.

The location is absolutely gorgeous, just off the beaten-path of Napa - without having to drive far at all. But what is best about this winery is the hospitality of the people who live and love Biali. Alina has 'hosted' our last four tastings and she is simply wonderful. We're delighted when we see her because we know she takes great joy in making our visit memorable - no matter how often we're there.

Our last visit, tasting just four wines, was three hours long, sitting on the patio, playing our favorite table game, and soaking in the wonder of Napa and the wonder of Robert Biali Vineyard. Oh yeah, the wine is spectacular, but that's a given.

Wine Tasting at It's Best

By Sailfish17 |

Our group of 8 had a reservation for wine tasting at 10a at Robert Biale. We were greeted by Pat Jefferies upon arrival, who handed us wine glasses with our first pour of Black Chicken Zin(very smooth and balanced), what a great start to the morning! After talking next to the vineyards for 15 - 20 minutes, Pat escorted us to Aldo's house to begin our formal wine tasting...... I should say education. For the next 1 1/2 hours he not only explained the family history of the winery, but provided us with an education of wine making that explained everything from growing, harvesting, to processing. We also asked numerous questions about all aspects of wine making and he was more than accommodating in answering. Our group loved the very personable, exclusive access we had at this winery. The wines, including their zinfandels and petite sirahs were excellent. And Pat was a great host and educator for us that put this whole wine tasting experience over the top. One of the best ever!!

Loved Biale!

By M Myers |

Visited with my wife and had a great experience. Lovely property on the valley floor. Alina was our host and did a terrific job informing us about the history behind the winery while pouring us delicious wines. We are zinfandel lovers and Biale was right up our alley. We left as new black chicken club members and can't wait to return!

Awesome wine coupled with breathtaking landscape

By Samantha P |

My husband and I visited Robert Biale Vineyards while we were in Napa and we're thankful we did! The first thing that strikes you is the amazing landscape. The Vineyard is nestled in among acres of vineyards and breathtaking views of the mountains surrounding the Valley. After digesting the gorgeous landscape, you then get to experience the great wines. My husband and I sat outside on the porch and enjoyed every minute of our tasting. We got to the Vineyard toward the end of the day so we were the only two there which was great because the young man that was working that afternoon was gracious enough to bring all the wine outside to us and sit with us and talk. I would recommend this winery to anyone planning a visit to the Valley.

Perfect Setting for Tasting

By DrZ0621 |

After a weekend of tasting around Napa, we had time for one time more stop and decided to call based on a recommendation from another winery. A reservation is needed and they luckily said they had room for us. We noticed the 'Watch for Black Chicken' sign, and was quickly intrigued by the property. They have a nice outdoor patio high high-top tables for tasting overlooking the grape vines. I immediately loved the more relaxed feeling of being outside with just a few other tables, and didn't feel rushed or pressured into buying. Robert Biale produces mainly Zin and Syrah, which was a nice change from tasting Cabs. The staff was really polite and enjoyed hearing the history of the 'Black Chicken'. We didn't purchase anything because we already had so many bottles coming already, but I really enjoyed the wines and would like to return again for another tasting in the future. At $25 per tasting, this was one a great value for the atmosphere and quality of product. I would put this one of your list, as it feels much different than the loud, crowded tasting rooms you might find elsewhere in Napa. Robert Biale delivers a relaxed, friendly vibe, that makes you feel more like you are visiting friends than being herded to buy expensive wines.

Great Stop for Zinfandel

By bmvarnau |

The tasting tables are pleasantly set next to the vineyard; the veranda's location offers beautiful views of the winery and valley beyond. We enjoyed learning about the winery's history and the story behind the "black chicken." We also enjoyed the wines so much that we had a case sent home to Massachusetts. The wine making and vineyard management teams at Biale are clearly in lock-step; the wines are well-structured and have great color and finish. It is well worth scheduling a tasting at their facility away from the craziness of Hwy 29.

Excellent Stop in Napa Valley

By mndee2017 |

A friend recommended a stop at Robert Biale, and it did not disappoint. The environment was laid back and our Wine Educator, Thomas, was wonderful about answering all of our questions and making us feel welcome. We sampled three different Zinfandels and a petite Syrah. It was fun to compare the various wines and learn about what caused the difference in flavors. I strongly suggest visiting them if you’re in the area and not just focusing on “the big guys” in wineries.

Great Zinfandel

By thelangernj |

This is one of the top producers for Zinfandel, but now with the addition of petit Syrah to the lineup, they are more than a one trick pony. They're tasting menus are designed to explore their main varietal. But their long history of exceptional Zinfandel is why you go here.

Sitting in the vineyards as you taste is a wonderful experience for those who enjoy the intimacy of the full experience.

Outstanding Tasting Experience

Upon arrival, we were seated at a high top on the "back porch". A small chalk board was on the table, identifying the table was reserved for our party. Alina, our hostess, was amazing. Not only was she knowledgeable of the wines, but the history of the family, the vineyards and the region. The wines were outstanding. One of our best experiences in Napa.

Fantastic Wines and People!

By Alan K |

Fantastic Wines and People! I have been a member of the Black Chicken Society for over 15 years, with this only being our second visit. One can’t express the gratitude we felt on our recent visit to Napa. The winery personnel went out of their way to explain the wines, and showed passion for what they do! Can’t wait until we visit in the future!

GREAT VISIT

Our trip to Biale was great ... they worked us in at the last minute and Thomas was very knowledgeable of their wines and the area.

The best winery in napa

By james k |

This is a great place to bring friends or family for a real taste of what a Napa winery should be like.
Its not this commercialized winery where you have buses pouring in with boat loads of people. Its a quiet setting with with a fantastic view of the vineyard the service is amazing and the knowledge of wines is second to none!
Best Zin's you will find in Napa at a really great price.

Tom and John created and memorable and lovely experience for my wife and I. The were gracious hosts and made our experience perfect! John has a wealth of knowledge and tells a story of the wines that keeps you captivated. We were celebrating our 27th wedding anniversary this weekend and this was a highlight of our weekend!!!

Great time at the vineyard

By Marina K |

There's so many vineyards in Napa that you cannot possibly visit them all in 5 days. We had planned a few wine tastings and this particular one was spontaneous. We simply joined a group of our new friends that were determined to check it out. And wow, it was amazing! First of all, the view is to die for. We sat outside at the wooden table, great conversation flowing, awesome company, superb wine. The host gave us his full attention, telling stories about the winery, pouring them wines. We ended up buying a few bottles to take home. Actually, didn't really want to leave the place and asked if we can have a small picnic on the property and watch the sun go down. Wish granted, we spent another hour or two enjoying ourselves, care free, totally happy to be in such a magnificent surroundings. We will always have this precious memory that made our Napa vacation just awesome.

What an experience!!!!

First time visiting this area! This was my VERY FAVORITE winery. Our host was very friendly and answered every question about the location, the wines and the history of the winery. Wine was good...Ask about the Black Chicken wine...Where the name came from??? Very interesting...

Why we love Napa

By marsigorman |

Biale is everything we love about Napa! The winery is beautiful, serene, relaxing, lovely to behold. Every single encounter with any members of the Biale family/staff is always welcoming, kind and sincere. Their wines are my husband's favorites - exceptional. We love the personal attention we get and appreciate all of the events, updates, newsletters, etc. Whenever we have guests in town we recommend they visit Biale! Cheers!

Biale, exceptional day!

5 oo 5 experience! Our wine host, Andrew, was friendly and knowledgeable about the wines he served us. All of the wines we tasted were great as well!! I am thrilled with our experience today.

We will forever be happy members of Biale!

Biale rocks

This is a gem in the valley. Great , but small venue, excellent staff and really fine red wine. I’ve been a member of those wine club for years.

Gorgeous, intimate setting with some lovely Zins

By Jess W |

Wonderful, personal wine tasting experience. Absolutely gorgeous views of the vineyards in a small, intimate outdoor tasting setting. We had a fabulous host that guided us through our Zins and the history of the vineyard. Definitely recommend visiting.

Another great time at Biale

By ElGuru71 |

I returned to Robert Biale Vineyards after my positive experience in June of this year. Biale continues to produce great wines at good prices, served in a beautiful vineyard side setting. In addition to the typically great Zins, we tasted some excellent Petite Sirah and Syrah blends. Looking forward to my next visit!

Beat tasting experience yet

By Pierre S |

Tom was very informative and entertaining.

Wonderful Zinfandels and Syrahs. The best tasting and wines yet in our 3 day tour.

Biale is the real deal.

By Tom Koch |

Gorgeous setting in middle of Napa Valley. Great history to winery and the wine. Their Zin is a cab lovers zin. It' complex and sophisticated. In addition, their Petite Sirah fits the bill when looking for a really full bodied, long lasting wine for big meat dishes.

The people are warm and welcoming and are able to converse at early stage wine drinkers to wine lovers with very sophisticated palates.

I'll go again and again.

Fun times while enjoying fantastic wines

By Maria E |

What a delight! A friend and I are members of Biale as we love the wine and it is a good price point but this tasting topped our list of 12 wineries with our group of 11. Tom our wine guide was a hoot, knowledgeable and a great story teller. We enjoyed each sip, we’re not rushed and had a delightful experience. Many bottles of wine were purchased as were memberships. Thanks Biale and specifically Tom for making us look like rock stars! Can’t wait to come back!

Spectacular Vineyard with Wines that will knock your socks off!

By LIZ R |

This vineyard has become one of our favorite to visit. We travel to Napa/Sonoma every year for some relaxation and to search for new wines.

The Robert Biale Vineyard has become one of our favorites, and we return each year to sample the latest offerings and always return home with their latest Zinfandels !!!

We cannot speak more highly of this vineyard, they are so wonderful and welcoming. Their knowledge is second to non, and with each visit we always learn something new and have a great deal of fun in the process.

The view of the valley from the back is simply spectacular. This place is ALL about substance and simplicity.

If you're looking for top quality Zinfadels or Petite Syrah, then you MUST put this vineyard on the list.

Just left this week, and already we can’t wait to go back. See you next year!

Easy going chill vibe visit

By JulieGiov! |

Chill vibe. Easy going staff and delicious wines to enjoy in a beautiful outdoor setting. As a local it’s nice to play hooky during the week and enjoy where we live. No need to drive up valley just a short drive up big ranch road for a lovely tasting. Ask for a tasting of the port! OMG! So good. (IMHO)

Favourite tasting of the weekend

We thoroughly enjoyed our tasting at Robert Biale. Tom was our host and he really knew his wine and knew the history of the area. He had some great stories and made our anniversary really special! The patio overlooking the vineyard is gorgeous.

Great Wine, Great Afternoon

By kkhinnm |

We have always loved Biale wines and couldn't wait to visit the place they call home. Its a pretty place with lovely vineyards. The tasting room is nice but sitting outside was so much more to our liking that day. We had their Super Tasting of two zins, two syrahs and two petite sirahs. Delicious. Love me some Black Chicken!!

While we were on our fifth "taste" a lovely, older woman asked if she could join us. She was so sweet and so darling, we couldn't have said anything but CERTAINLY. Well, it turns out this was MRS. BIALE!! We talked for an hour and loved every minute of the time she shared with us. She told us about meeting her husband Aldo, starting the winery, struggling for years and then how much she loves Napa and the honor of owning a winery.

They could have been selling bottles of bad vinegar and I would have loved every momnet!!

While I am not sure how often Mrs. Biale visits, but a trip to Biale Vineyards is certainly a must for anyone who loves wine! Wish I were there now!

Killer good time and, whoa, such fine wines!!

By Mary S |

We were there last week for their members party and tasting. What an excellent time we had, wines perfect, wine host adorable and knowledgable, weather perfect and all in all a wonderful afternoon. Thinking back to our many visits to the winery I cannot think of a single things to make tasting better.

Great Wine & Great People

By Edwin G |

Biale is a great winery to visit with a great story to go along with the wine. They produce some of the best Zins in Napa. I first discovered their wines at Michael Mina restaurants and loved them. I joined their club based on their Black Chicken Zin alone, but have been amazed by the quality of their wines.
