Well worth it.

By Kevin R |

If you want to know all about elk or even if you don't this place is well worth a visit. And to think it all started with volunteers.

So glad we stopped here!

By JoAnn B |

We weren't sure what to expect from the outside, but on the inside, this place is cool! Many beautiful exhibits that teach visitors about the local wildlife. Great for all ages and free admission. We bought great souvenirs and felt good helping the Elk Foundation.

Really Interesting

By Katherine H |

Really interesting place! I visited once years ago but it has really changed since then and for the better! Some great reading material and great information on the foundation and what they stand for. I have always loved elk and found them to be majestic animals. The elk foundation was a fun thing to do while I was in town visiting for business and I highly recommend to anyone who has not been there before to check it out!

Rocky mountain elk foundation

By Julia S |

My husband was really excited about this place. It was right down the street to our hotel so why not? It was nice and informative. This now is a weird thing to say but the ladies room was the prettiest, cleanest and had nice art on the walls. I'm not a hunter but had a nice time here. The kids I saw there were having a good time as well. Nice stop along the way.

Glad we found this Gem

By Dan R |

Our travel schedule was open for a few hours in the morning so we thought we’d give it a try based on other recommendations. Even though we don’t hunt we found the RMEF to be extremely informative and educational. Enjoyed the videos and the displays were top notch.

The foundation does an excellent job of explaining how hunters contribute to conservation efforts. The short walking trail was also interesting and gave us a chance to get in a nice walk on a beautiful Montana morning.

Educational

By ChrissySJ |

The Elk Foundation is a great place to take kids to learn about the conservation of these beautiful animals. We have enjoyed looking through the informative gallery and gift shop. Some of the items in the gift shop are really nice and you can leave with a nice shirt or trinkets. We have had little gatherings here as well.

It's like going to a museum!

By Deborah C |

I did not know what to expect; I was amazed! This is a great place to take the kids or friends interested in learning about the world of the elk. There is a beautiful, state of the art exhibit. So much to see and learn; and TOUCH. I can't wait till my grandson is old enough to enjoy it (he is 6 months now).
AND, it's FREE!

Great Place for Kids

By PNJ Travels |

My kids love this place!! Interesting exhibits and videos to watch. We also enjoy walking along the different trails outside when the weather's nice.

Neat little stop to take a break

By Dempsey V |

Cool little museum about Western Montana hunting and conservation. There is a gift shop and none of the items are too expensive. Best of all.... it is FREE unless you want to leave a donation.

Worth the visit

By DonR_09 |

The exhibit area is not very large - two large rooms and a very nice gift shop. Overall is was a very enjoyable one hour visit. Highly recommended during a Missoula stop-over.

very neat place to visit!

By Krysta S |

ITS free ! Wonderful taxidermy on many wild animals, a.d very informative , was a great place to visit!

see the wild in the city

By grandmacindy1965 |

It is a good place to take the kids for a walk on a cool crisp day, or a hot summer evening. You can talk the dog for a walk too. They have some very nice information on the trail so you can leaner a little about the different habitats that are there. then when you go into the little museum and you can see and touch and hear about some of the wild life that is right here in the Missoula area. This is one place I love to go for some quit time and love to take my granddaughter in the winter for a walk and a place to have some fun

WOW - VERY IMPRESSED!!

By Rob S |

We have been up close to live, huge bull elks in Estes Park during the winter season, but nothing we witnessed there compares to the size of elk on display at the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation headquarters in MIssoula, Montana. Simply a wonderful display of bull heads with very nice and descriptive plaques about each displayed head, Very good way to learn about the antler point rating system. Had a great time and you will too. Plan on thirty minutes to one hour, but add about 1/2 hour to see the movie.

Beautiful, educational and free!

By Cinkin27 |

Very nice displays of elk and other wildlife. There is a self-guided tour where you can either just look at the animals or select cards that give you more information about each one. There is a room that shows a film about responsible hunting. It was informative. A lot of work went into this place and I would have paid to get in, but it is free!! Highly recommend.

Elk lovers paradise

By Richard B |

This is a museum type setting, with a great gift shop too! Beautifully mounted elk trophies and displays make it an great educational experience for people to learn about the conservation efforts of the RMEF. We spent over an hour there, and could have stayed longer if our schedule permitted. Bring a camera!

Interesting exhibits and nice gift shop

By bigsky55 |

The Elk Foundation is a great place to stop off if you are visiting or just traveling through Missoula. Right off I-90 Reserve St exit (1/4 mile north of the highway, on Grant Creek Road...take the exit, turn north). Well signed.
Contains numerous head mounts of record elk, both typical and atypical antlers. They had some very nicely done videos about elk and habitat, wildlife research, and also some beautiful displays of butterflies, while I was there. Their gift shop is really nice. Besides the typical hats, Tshirts, books, etc, they have a nice selection of knives. Quality displays!!

By Hope_Gunter |

A beautifully designed building to showcase the great work they are doing for nature! Friendly and knowledgeable staff. No entry fee so it's great for families.

There with our Daughter 3

By nelsongassman |

Thanks what a great time on a beautiful days enjoy all the experience.and great staff friendly and helpful

Much to learn

By iTraveltheworld195 |

First things first, I AM NOT A HUNTER. That being said, RMEF had plenty to teach me and plenty for me to learn. Still not a converted hunter but I certainly now have respect for how RMEF promotes the sport.

I love that they are all about making sure the elk population is maintained or even increased. They are trying to bring back the elk population to areas where they have long since disappeared.

Nice exhibits with easy understandable explanations.

Wildlife review

By Robert S |

One should not miss this museum in Missoula. Try to guess all the wildlife in the outstanding display of wildlife in a natural setting. A very clean and informative small museum. A visit helps the foundation.

Update, Still Closed

By Douglas Westonson |

It's still closed as of August 7th. Just writing this as an update, it says so on Google but incase you check here instead. They are closed for renovations, they are unsure when they will reopen again. Be sure to check the RMEF page about the visitor center before stopping over.

Nice wildlife diorama

By Derry K |

Went to see the mount of the largest archery taken typical bull elk and enjoyed all the mounts of typical and atypical records on display. The diorama containing a large variety of animals and birds was very realistic.

Very educational and friendly staff

By mtishome |

We enjoyed the mounts and learning a little more about elk, their habitat and what the foundation is doing to improve them. Beautiful building.

Worth a Stop

By LadyJLasVegas |

Interesting perspective on the balance between conservation and hunting. Lots of good information on elk in general. Took us about an hour, all told.

Much smaller than I was expecting

By missyh606 |

My husband and I have been longtime members of RMEF and have wanted to visit the museum for several years. We were finally able and both of us were a little disappointed. My kids enjoyed the movie they watched and I enjoyed the gift shop. It is worth stopping as it's free and it doesn't take very long but I wouldn't have big expectations.

Great educational place with a little hike!

By kruser350 |

I have actually been here many times, the exhibits are always being updated and new information is always available here. It’s a great place to bring kids or just stroll around for a leisurely afternoon. Thanks Again!

Geared more towards hunters

By MemomPam |

Learned a few interesting facts regarding elks and wildlife in general, but the museum was basically geared towards hunters.

Glad to see this back open

By montanapescado |

Everything you ever wanted to know about elk, and then some. Will be a bigger draw for some than for others. Highly recommend for any lover of Rocky Mountain wildlife.

Nice stop while in Missoula

By Wyoming11 |

The exhibits were very interesting and the staff friendly. The elk mounts were impressive with many being some of the largest ever taken.

A must see in Missoula

By Shawn M |

We always take visitors to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. They have beautiful displays, lots of conservation information and a very helpful staff.

One of a kind place.

By carlenemissoula |

We always reccommend visitors to our area to be sure and see this. It is great for all ages, and it does wonders to teach about elk, deer and other wildlife. Great exhibits. Especially nice gift shop.

Enjoyed by all of us

By calkatt |

We arrived close to closing time but 1/2 hour is enough time to see the exhibits of (stuffed) Montana wildlife. I thought the exhibits were pretty well done and our 6 and 8 year old grandsons were captivated by all the animals. There are about a zillion stuffed Elk heads with amazing antlers. Well done, though personally I don't care for that kind of thing. The Buffalo head was about the most interesting thing I saw - they are huge!

Great kicking off point!

By Ross C |

Beautiful building in a wonderfully wooded setting to showcase the extraordinary efforts put forth by wildlife supporters. Interesting displays, lots of learning materials, wonderful gift shop, good for a hour of so free entertainment.

Good for hunters

By MTpeanut |

I'm not a hunter, but this attraction has some stuffed (once alive) animals in it. Kids like to see this. You can also get some literature on hunting in MT.

Nice and simple

By jeanniec |

I took my 2 teenagers there. There is no cost. Inside the museum they have various animals on display and lots of interactive things for kids to do. They also have a gift shop with very friendly ladies. There is a small trail outside you can walk and a paved trail that is a few miles long if you want to take a longer walk. The area is beautiful, so green with beautiful trees and flowers.

View the Elk!

By nancycD3182RR |

Our visit in the center was a bit delayed as we ran into old friends from PA! Shows how popular this site is with others. It was fun to walk around the center to see the BIG bulls. The center also includes some stories about the hunts that produced the beautiful taxidermy. Most hopeful was Deborah at the gift shop. She enjoyed seeing the pictures of our PA elk herd, that initially came from Montana. When she found out we were headed to Glacier National Park, she mentioned a couple of places to visit in the park. Her suggestion to visit the Goat Lick was the best. Talk to local folks, they provide the best leads for a great experience.

Interesting!

By HaroldLB655 |

We stopped by here again, loved it! Always have loved wildlife and it was super interesting. Nice setup, Friendly staff! I highly recommend!

Informative and interesting

By Paul S |

This the headquarters for the rocky mountain elk foundation. There is a display area with local animals displayed with information on the ecosystems they live in and how they all live. Most of the elk displayed were taken by hunters and includes information on how they are ranked.

Kim and Kellen

By Kim L |

My son loves to go for the kids fest day. So many different activities for the kids to do. My sons favorite in the shooting simulator!

Great displays and educational opportunities

By Curtis C |

I habe always enjoyed visiting RMEF. They share a passion for conservation and explain their mission very well. Not only do they explain the mission well, they also live their mission and do a great job of stewarding land, wildlife and their members.

First Class Facility

By Roger S |

What a wonderful experience! The beautiful new headquarters of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation fits in perfectly with the environment. Full of thoughtfully constructed education stations, especially a life size diorama with many animals. Taxidermy throughout the displays is excellent. As a non-hunter (but not opposed to hunting), this visitor learned a lot and gained a new appreciation for the RMEF.

loved it

By ilovespanish |

this is a great place for families. it is free and they have great taxodermy and video of the wildilfe... my kids love it.

Educational

By Patrice F |

The displays were wonderful. A film explaining the foundation was fascinating. The building was modern and easy to find. There was plenty of parking.

Very Educational Visit

By Rachel C |

This is a very informative place to visit to learn about conservation efforts by the community to help preserve wildlife and nature. Free admission to all and educational worthy. Facilities are great and they have great movie about animals and birds to watch for free.

Lots of racks to see here!

By heeler_girl2014 |

We stopped by RMEF and there were lots of nice mounts. Most of them were elk. Nice display cases and hands on items for all. It is free. If you are a hunter, this is a must visit. Very clean and there is a 15 minute video.

Totally worth stopping!!

By BSchurr |

You can learn a lot here! You get to see the animals(more than just elk) up close(stuffed./taxidermy). They have an animals sound exhibit. It is free to go it, there is a box for donations if you want to leave one, but no one stands and harasses you to donate. The have very clean restrooms and a gift shop. I will stop by again.

By Docmarx |

The Elk Country Visitor Center is a beautiful facility that educates you about the behavior and habitat of elk and the other animals that share their environment, and the efforts of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation to buy habitat and reintroduce the species into its former range.

The exhibits are interactive and fun, and the mounts are amazing. I had a few misgivings about the prominence of major sponsor Cabela's in the displays, and as a non-hunter, it's hard sometimes not to be dismayed by the message, "I'll never forgete the day I saw this beautiful elk and killed it."

Nonetheless, there's no point in being a bleeding heart about it. While many of us love animals, it's been the hunters for the past century who have been willing to put up the cold cash for the research and habitat preservation to bring the elk and many other species back from the edge of extinction. The Elk Visitor Center celebrates that achievement and projects the work far into the future. Good for them. Because of this work, all of us benefit.

Sight seeing

By Anita G |

Such a great place. Loads of information and animals on display. Informative flims and walking trail.

Great Montana Place To Go

By William R |

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation is a great, Montana grown, conservation foundation and the Headquarters is a fun and educational visit. There is something for everybody. The displays and mounts are first class and have some of the largest elk taken in North America. The center itself provides educational displays, videos and other info on the ecology of elk and their habitat. I've been a supported since the beginning and the land acquisitions and other conservation work RMEF does is second to none. I often bring visitors to Missoula to the RMEF. If you come, think about giving a donation because this organization does a lot to preserve elk habitat throughout the U.S. and Canada. The gift shop has some interesting items for men, women and children.

Neat place

By David B |

I'm an avid hunter and supporter of RMEF so it was neat to see what they do and to see how donating and volunteers help with our elk populations.

Plenty of Elk Education

By texas-tech-redraider |

An educational opportunity to see elk mounts and other animals. A quick film is also available (which we didn't have time for). My husband and I spent about 45 minutes here and found it to be a nice way to see the size of the elk in this area. If you are pro-hunting, this is a must see...my husband loved it.

Awesome place to go and learn about our animals!

By victoriabragg21509 |

You should come and visit for sure, lots of hands on things to do and great movies!!!
This place has all types of exhibits and real artifacts on all types of animals! Nice gift shop as well!

Elk Education Ensues!

By mom2my4boyz |

A beautiful facility dedicated to conservation and education. We went on a Saturday and less than a handful of people were inside.

FREE MUSEUM

By COLEVILLE |

It was a good place to see for children and adults. There is a nice big screen to watch. Buttons for children to press of the different animals in the area.

Great information

By SeeMT |

The RMEF is a great organization that helps foster quality wildlife management. Their Headquarters is worth a stop to see huge elk mounts and other educational information about being good stewards.

Worthy Cause and Interesting Place to Visit

By Kathryn H |

Educational information for children as well as adults. Great exhibits, gift shop and the opportunity for the preservation of this majestic animal!

Very Interesting!

By Greg C |

Cool place, I was actually convinced to go here via tripadvisor which is funny. I am not from a place that has a lot of elk nor do I know anything about them, until I visited the Elk Foundation. Great place and very informative. Nice people and a great attraction to visit for anyone of all ages I would say!

Informative and well presented

By Cat E |

We came here because my husband had already heard about it. I really liked it as I had no idea about the size of some of the animals they have on display, or for that matter what they really looked like up close. If you're not from the USA you have no appreciation of how big an elk is, that's for sure. We really enjoyed being able to feel the texture of the beaver tail and understand how important it is to manage the animals in their home environment.

Well done!

By David C |

It's appropriate that the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation's headquarters are in Missoula. They did a nice job on this facility, well done. It's not very big, but well worth visiting. Best to spend a couple of hours there.

By Vita n |

We were passing through Missoula during our trip and decided to visit this place; great decision! The museum was great! Lot's of stuffed wild animals (bear, eagle, deer, swan, ...) and nice displays; I mean, I've never touched a skunk or seen a bear footprint before! It was lot's of fun for us and little toddler and would definitely recommend that! I should also mention that it was free, but you could donate (like $5/family)which definitely was worth it!

Nice stip

By SDB545 |

This is a great spot to stretch your legs and learn something about our large wildlife. Very good interpretive displays.

Interesting

By Julie L |

My family and I were already familiar with the RMEF, we had never visited but have attended fundraisers for them before. It was great to see the history behind the foundation and of course learn more about elk. Great experience, would go back!

Great place to visit!

By bbgma |

The center has a nature trail you can walk through explaining the habitats. While we were walking the trail, we met a young doe who was not afraid to keep eating while we walked through. The center has a lot of interesting information and a video. Worth the stop!

great family entertainment

By Trish V |

They have a film presentation, interactive exhibits, lots of elk mounts with some of the top Boon and Crocket awards. They have a gift shop on sight.

very interesting

By Marc D |

Good information for those of us who love the outdoors and are interested in preserving elk. Free, but please make a donation.

My wife said glad we went

By Jack L |

A pleasant stop. Beautiful sculpture and taxidermy. Remarkable to see these animals at arms length away.

Very nice museum and it's free

By Phyllis S |

We are visiting the area and decided to stop here and glad we did. Very nicely done with a lot of elk history, very educational for those of us not from elk country. Easily spent an hour reading all the signs, watching the videos and admiring the well stuffed animals. Nice little gift shop too.

Fantastic Display of Elk

By Mike B |

The place is amazing. Many many elk heads hang on the wall and there are several full elk body mounts. Additionally there are bufflo and mountain sheep mounts that are very impressive. The facility is large, well lit and clean. Staffers are knowledgable and helpful.
Definately worth seeing when staying in or passing through Missoula. And it is just a couple of blocks off of I-90 for those just passing by Missoula.

Nice exhibit and some outstanding trophies!

By MontanaMike65 |

Spent about an hour in here recently. Time well spent. The trophy section can't be missed.

The kids will like the diarama.

RMEF does some really outstanding work. I'm glad they are here.

Fun time!

By JFarley1971 |

Visited here on our past trip to Missoula, it was awhile ago but wanted to just say how great of a time we had. Very interesting and hope to visit again soon when we can!

By LaVue2 |

The Elk Country Visitor Center, which also houses the headquarters for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, is located in Missoula north of I-90. I took my two grandchildren there in August 2006 we all thoroughly enjoyed it. There is no fee and there was much to see and learn. It is a beautiful building with many statues and mounts. Everything was new, crisp, clean and well done. Very educational in many formats. Don't miss the area behind the huge diorama like we almost did. Hunters will love this place! The trophy mounts are amazing! There's also a nice gift shop and friendly staff. This was a great place to visit!

Informative and well done

By FishinTexan |

A great way to eat up on hour. I had an afternoon to myself so I stopped here. The layout was thoughtfully put together. The displays were informative and a tribute to this majestic creature. Kids will like it and can interact with many of the displays.

Missoula, MT Attraction!

By Yvonne M |

I live here in Missoula and I have been and go to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation as often as I can. There is so much information about the area and hands on experiences for the kids. When I am child sitting or when family/friends come to town this is a place we all have enjoyed. I know through the years to come we will always go to the Rocky Mountain Elk foundation and see what new exhibits are being shown.

Place to educate your kids about conservation

By Mike Post |

Newly refurbished with great exhibits and fun stuff for kids. Get a family education about elk, other wildlife and how land conservation helps them all.

By Cheapseater |

Our family always enjoy stopping here when in Missoula. It is a fun and educational stop that our kids always enjoyed. Good gift shop and you can support a worthy cause with the RMEF. This organization was instrumental in the re-introduction of Elk to Tennessee and the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. May I add that the Elk re-introduction is going strong now 5+ years into the project. Stop, enjoy and support!

Informative and nice exhibition, well worth a stop.

By Jonas L |

A highly recommended stop to stretch your legs, 1-2 hours. Make sure not to miss the films shown on the work the Foundation is doing, and make sure to support its' good cause.

Informantive

By Eric W |

My nephew (age 12) loved the exhibits, especially the sounds (press button and particular sound is done). Good organization. Clean. Organized exhibits. They have theater with film if you have time. They have a gift shop.

A Missoula Must-See

By lisajoyw |

Three visits to Missoula and three to the Elk Foundation. It's a great place to take small children as there is much stuffed wildlife to see and hands-on audio exhibits of nature sounds that little ones love. Don't miss this free family experience and don't forget to donate!

Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation in Missoula, Mt.

By Rose G |

WOW!!! Each time I have a chance to go to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation in Missoula, Mt. I take advantage of it. It is so spectacular. They have it all displayed so well. You just keep saying "wow". All the kids are so excited and the adults also. I love it!

By danap765 |

This is a great organization that is doing a wonderful job in preserving elk habitat. This is their home office and contains some of the greatest elk mounts in the world.

Fun

By hanahgreene |

This was a fun place to walk through to kill an hour, wish we had had more time, but we just ran in to see what it was about. I was trying to take as much in as I could, need to come back.

Informative and interactive

By Shawn R |

We took out of town guests to the visitor center and they enjoyed it very much, as did we. The exhibits allow you to feel skins and antlers, among other activities. It's a great place to take kids.

Great organization and fun place to take the kids to learn not only about Elk but other wildlife from the region.

Wonderful facility

Very educational self guided tour featuring the Elk, the habitat, history and conservation on the species along with other species living in the same. Entrance fee by donation, very reasonable. Would definitely visit again.

Great Venue

By Boz724 |

RMEF headquarters visitor center is a great learning center for the impact this foundation has on the health of the elk conservation in North America. Don't miss the property walk, a nice little break from the car.

By Russ B |

We keep coming back. My son loves this place. I guess he has fond memories of coming here with us when he was little, and they have stuck with him. Take your kids here when they are young, and it will make an impression.

Awesome stuff

By Bill M |

A very nice, family friendly stop if you're passing through Missoula. Close to the freeway. Definitely worth the stop. The museum and nature walk are well done and informative and it's Free.

Foundation closed but worth a brief visit

By motele |

Sadly the foundation is closed Indefinitely due to flooding and renovation. Not all is lost though. There is a 1/2 mile loop trail with interesting signposts regarding elk. I recommend you walk this trail. It's an easy walk no hills to climb, you don't need to be a hiker.

Driving through must see

By Ontheroadagain |

We stopped in Missoula to visit a couple places on the way further north. Rocky Mountain elk foundation was my favorite stop by far. If you are driving through don't hesitate, go there now. Amazing elk mounts on display and a small gift shop to help support Rocky Mountain elk foundation.

Worth a look!

By Kimberly S |

Very near the Best Western Plus Grant Creek Inn... worth a stop and very interesting and awesome what the REMF is doing for conservation in our country! Bravo!

Learning about the animals at Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation

By Robby G C |

I was impressed that they had put the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation at the Visitor's Center.

That way, everyone would recognize the animals in the forest.

Outside, there was an elk made in metal.

Inside we could learn about all the animals. It is really well done.

There were nice paintings as well.

I liked the mountain lion.

The ram was also attractive!

They also warned us about fires and what to do if it happened.

There were a lot of heads of animals as well.

There was a bear. He was cute.

This is perfect for anyone. However, children like it the most.

A must see!

Great Interpretive Center

By Randy S |

Stop by the International Headquarters of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and learn about one of the most majestic animals to walk the earth. The exhibits are first class and very well done. Lots for both adults and kids to look at and learn about the Wapiti (Native American Indian word for "white rump").

Bring the family

By Allen H |

A great interactive learning experience. A great destination rain or shine. I solid organization that truly helps conserve wildlife and land. Please Join while you are there!

Interesting Wildlife Displays

By TomHlavac |

Focused on elk and the work of the RMEF, this is an interesting facility with educational displays and a video theatre and gift shop. There is a plethora of info on elk, but also some on a variety of other animals.

Very appropriate for kids to learn a little about wildlife. Especially when a family can visit for free. Leave a donation towards keeping this facility going.

Hunters and conservationists will enjoy

By robinnm01 |

I first visited the RMEF in their previous location about 15 years ago. I was amazed by the new structure. The new building is beautiful and has extensive displays of elk and other Rocky Mountain wild game. There is no admission charge. A gift shop is located on premises.

Fascinating

By jer b |

I am not a hunter, but I appreciate the need for hunting in this day and age and I appreciate that there is a foundation like this that provides education and an appreciation for wildlife. You can almost think that you are visiting a museum of Natural History. There are photographs and interactive exhibits. There are mounts of some of the largest elk from the area. I really like the movie presentation which was very informative. I also like the collection of mounted animals. I was especially happy to see a fisher cat, as I have never see one in the wild (and would prefer to see one here versus in the great outdoors). The building is large spacious and beautiful in design. Large parking lot (free). We have to be thankful for the four hunters who had the vision to make this educational center a reality. Admission is free. Very nice gift shop.

Don't miss the Elk Foundation

By KRMRDH |

If you are in Missoula, the Elk foundation is worth the time. Lots to see, but not overwhelming! Great for kids and adults alike.

Day trip

By Nicholas C |

Was worth the trip, a short ride with lots to see, elk mounts from all over and lots of information on elk, would be of interest to hunters. My wife who does not hunt also found it interesting. Takes about an hour or so to see everything. There are a few pelts to feel, kids will find it interesting as well.

Elk Must See

By Michelle L |

This is a must see if you visit Missoula. There is not that much to do in this small town and this is one of the boxes you must check off.

Oct 2017 trip

By Jon H |

This was a very interesting unplanned stop. It gave an excellent overview of the situation with Elk in the United States and how they are being preserved. Probably not for every one but I highly recommend this place.

Take the time to see it!

By Marsha M |

Always fun to stop by this place when your in Missoula. Gift for becoming a member. Free museum. Kid friendly.

Great Learning Experience

By we2russells |

There were so many interesting things to learn about and look at, at the RMEF! We went for a school field trip and enjoyed it so much that we went back a few days later for a free kids workshop on survival... both times we were there the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable...

Nice Museum

By bobbe-70 |

I always take visitors here. The museum is free, has wonderful mounts and exhibits to view and comfortable surroundings to relax and take it all in. They also have a nice gift shop for elk related merchandise.

Great educational and instructional attraction.

By lisahD9934RR |

Loved the displays and the educational information, plus added electronically shared info. Maps and animal displays were the best we have seen. Lots of parking plus walking trails to enjoy as well. Family orientated too.

Great stop just 5 minutes off of I 90 in Missoula

This conservation center/ museum was one of the real surprises of my visit to Missoula. Very interesting history of the elks ranges in the Americas and conservation efforts plus other neat features. on western habitat. Kits will love this as well as adults.

Beautiful building design.

It can easily eat up an hour or more.

Short Tour

By jbowditch |

Things to see here are interesting but somewhat limited. A good place to go to kill an hour or so but probably no more. Great mounts if you are into Elk.

Impressive

By kathyterrell |

This is an impressive building with a nice display of mounted animals. A nice break, if traveling by car. Free to look, nice bathrooms and a small store area. Lots of information too.

Fun for Kids and Adults. Take the short walk near entrance. Saw some Deer.

By Monty765 |

Very nice facility. Lots of information on Elk and other animals native to the area. Admission is free as is parking right in front of building. Nice little walking trail near entrance. Flat and easy walking saw some Deer, look for them in shady areas around trees.

An Educational Treat

By Penny H |

I learned a lot about how this foundation has helped many states restore the elk herds to states that had allowed the elk population to disappear. The displays were informative and educational.

Well Worth It, Deer and Elk Hunters

By SC Osprey |

It’s a pretty short ride up Grant Creek from Interstate 90–go on in to left, right past the service station above I-90 and Starbucks. It’s an impressive building, with an awesome diorama, and trophy head room. If you’re an avid deer and/or elk hunter, it’s a must stop in Missoula!

Awesome

By CLZG |

The displays are informative. The wildlife exhibits are so true to life. Look carefully to see all the "critters"!!

Fascinating and entertaining

By Susan M |

This place is a great tour for kids and adults alike. Since Missoula is a major hub for firefighters, equipment etc., it's all here. Spring thru fall would be best time to visit as lots going on. You get to go into a tanker plane if here, see firefighters sewing their own packs, see where parachutes are hanging and how they're packed, etc. Very interesting and helps one appreciate what firefighters do. For teens, tots and adults.

great visit

By Michael B |

Well worth the visit. I am happy to support this worthy cause and the information and displays were very informative. We will be back.

Worth a quick visit

By JC19552012 |

Excellent displays - beautiful taxidermy even if you dislike taxidermy they were displayed really well. Good to see the work they are doing to preserve elks - magnificent creatures. Staff seemed disinterested though which was a shame.

Great little place to visit

By Fisherman89 |

It may take you 30-40 minutes to see entire exhibit but it's worth the drive. The admission is free and small gift shop is interesting...

Biggest Elk in the World!

By HorsemanNomad |

Has a nice collection of Bull elk mounts, including the world record holder. Also a nice video playing showing elk in the wild and very educational. Good for about 1-2 hour visit.

Wild and wonderful Elk

By codysmomnow |

The RMEF Visitor Center is on of the best to visit. There is a section for children to explore to learn about elk in the wild. The movie theater is running TEAM ELK video's all day. The shopping done in the gift shop has much to add to your wardrobe while helping RMEF protect the habitat which elk and other wildlife survive in.

Must stop here

By Laning |

Very pleasant surprise. Wasn't sure exactly what to expect but as a hunter and outdoorsman I was curious. Wife and 2 kids, 13 and 15, along as well. Free admission(donation asked for). Some really neat educational/informational displays worth it for all. Excellent examples of taxidermy. An entire wall of various trophy mounts along one wall is very impressive. Really a neat place and a quick and easy stop.

Great place for children and adults.

By Jane K |

We have been to this attraction many times with children ranging from age 3 to age 10. There has been something of interest to each of them as well as to us. The children have always called our attention to things we, as adults, had previously missed. The attraction is free (although you have the opportunity to donate toward the preservation of the facility) and offers a wonderful wildlife education opportunity as well as being lots of fun. Some of the larger stuffed animals can be somewhat intimidating to smaller children, but we were always able to deal with it and have a great time.

Very interesting spot

By Pinguin55 |

If you are interested in wildlife and espaecially in elks, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Visitor Center is one of the HotSpots here in Missoula. Exhibits and videos are excellent, a small gift shop is providing a lot of stuff and during a walk along the trail on the ground, you can watch some elks living here.

Great side trip that doesn't take all day.

By travelinglizard2013 |

I learned a lot about the Elk and the ecology of the area. Not to mention about the Foundation. It is small so that you can learn and enjoy without being too daunting that you get bored. It would have been nice if there nature area was bigger. We did spot a mule deer having dinner in the area as well as a snake.

Great stop!

By halechr |

Made a stop here while traveling through Montana. Very interesting, there was a lot of information on what the RMEF does and elk themselves.

Great, Great Stop!

By Brett H |

Exhibits of every little critter and in each area there are teaching tools for youngsters. A nice resting area and its fun to sign their guest book.... and see people signing it from all over the U.S. and some out of the country, too. They have a GREAT gift shop which helps support the center. A must for anyone coming into Missoula, Mt.

I went a few years ago with a large group of linemen and we all enjoyed seeing the displays. The educational information concerning the RMEF was very enjoyable and entertaining.

Very interesting centre

By Janne N |

We dropped in and were very impressed with the amount of information and displays in the centre. I am not a hunter so I didn't really like the heads mounted on the walls but realise they are an important part of Elk history...
Would recommend to friends and keep up the great work you are doing to preserve the Elk and their environment.

Fantastic Organization

By Ralph C |

RMEF is an organization dedicated to improving and preserving habitat primarily elk habitat. A very high percentage of the Funds donated or generated go directly to this cause. Members are an extremely dedicated group.

I really liked this museum. My mom and I went to visit and spent a while reading through everything. There's things for kids to touch, listen and look at. It's a smaller museum, but as an adult with no kids, I could easily spend a few hours in there.

By 50_Star |

This is a very nice facility. The price is right and there are some great Elk on display. They have some good educational displays as well.

Not much

By Bill G |

Basically just a visitor center with some stuffed elks and educational films and a very short hiking trail. No live elk. Nothing wrong just not much to it.

Well worth seeing

By Trudy Keller |

We enjoyed this exhibit very much. Seeing the mammoth sizes of different elk was fascinating. Very educational and a beautiful environment.

Interesting

By Diane B |

I did not know if I would like this as I am not a hunter. But I have hunters in my family. Despite this, it was a great exhibit and helped you understand the balance between maintaining certain species of animals as well as allowing individuals to hunt and properly utilize their hunt. The trail was nice but could be better marked.

Nice facility

By COLEVILLE |

Have been here two times and will be back. While visiting family years ago we too one of the little ones and he loved it. It is for all ages. This year unfortunately we ran out of time to tour it but stopped by to pick up some nice merchandise

Surrounding the main building are walking paths among the trees and the stream. I've seen deer as I walked and jogged the area. Very very calming.

Very well done exhibit depicting the wildlife indiginous to the area, and how the elk population is recovering from near depletion due to over hunting and hibitat loss. It is free.

By hspettit |

We have visited in the past and waned to share this great place with the grandchildren and they loved it. Glad we allowed enough time to see everything. educational for everyone.

Not my thing

By Jenny T |

Interesting museum/exhibit. But the fact that it was started by 4 elk hunters, to keep the elk population up so they can be hunted, was a turn-off for me. Others may feel differently.

Amazing taxidermy!

By sberglee |

The animals are displayed beautifully! Very Educational! An important reminder hunting is crucial to the preservation of wildlife and our future.

We stopped by while on a trip out west and just had to stop in for a visit. I am an avid outdoors man and know of the RMEF. We were not disappointed. There are lots of very informative displays and exhibits that explain the history and purpose of the RMEF.

By tyockim |

If you are outdoorsy, this is a GREAT place to stop. It's packed with info about the elk and other wildlife of Montana and these folks do alot with the money that comes through their foundation. I see stickers for the RMEF all over the west!!!

Very well put together museum!

By Gary B |

We stopped to see this and were very glad we did. Excellently put together with very informative presentations. It isn't very large, but it's history and teaching areas are perfectly presented, along with spectuacular animals to view.

Interesting and educational

By cruisingrightalong |

We were back in Missoula to fly home to Tennessee. So we had heard of the Elk Foundation and visited. It was very informative to us since we don't know a lot about wildlife and its habitats. So very interesting and not a fee but a suggested donation amount. The gift shop was nice but small. We did learn quite a bit to take on with us in our trivia knowledge! We did not walk the property ... was too hot.... but that looked like a nice way to see some potential wildlife or just have a nice stroll.

Great Place To Take The Grandkids!

By Judy Helm W |

Our grandkids so enjoy visiting the Rocky Mountain Elk foundation. They love the full sized animals and the real life sounds the animals make to communicate.

This has been a great tourist visiting place in Missoula. Always run into foreign visitors when we are there.

Great stop to check out RMEF and all the things they are doing to protect and help elk in the country. The employee in the gift shop was very kind and helpful answering all of our questions and putting up with my little ones. Thanks for a great visit!

Awesome experience

By duane595 |

This is an awesome place to go even if a person is not an elk hunter. Lots of recordbook mounts and the gift shop has a lot of interesting stuff.

A must-see

By Lucille M |

This display is very well done. Very educational and beautifully planned. A great treat for all ages. Great expertise has been applied to display, information, ambiance and one can spend quite awhile in there. We were happily surprised at what we saw.

Great Stop

By SlempMeSilly |

The location is really well placed being right next to the highway.

The diorama was well kept and was very informative. I really enjoyed looking at all the record elk and the non-typical elk especially. Took the small trail outside after, it was a nice touch.

The staff is friendly, everything is clean and we'll maintained. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my time here.

The elk foundation does great work and is worth a look.

By Joel S |

The elk foundation raises funds to support wild elk and their habitat. They also have some really great elk mounts as well as other critters to look at. A very worthwhile stop for those interested in local wildlife.

Go see these wonderful animals.

By K4kathie |

We took our grandkids there. It is a great way for them to experience just how majestic Elk really are. There are learning videos, short, but informative.

Worth the trip - and helps the elk

By Dave C |

This place had very good indoor exhibits with a couple of movies; some interactive exhibits; some reading material; and actual animal parts. In addition, there is about a 1/2 mile trail that has signs explaining various natural phenomena. We spent about 90 minutes here. One learns all about elk, what the eat, how they live, and where they live. There's even a map of all the states and where elk can be found.

A Worthwhile Visit

By VagabondFA |

While in Missoula I try to always hit the downtown art galleries and museum. This is a little away from downtown but it’s worthwhile to visit. There are many stuffed / taxidermy animals to get close to—gives perspective, lots on info on conservation efforts, including a film, and a really nice little gift shop.

Good resource on the great work RMEF does for Elk!

By Rick F |

Nice exhibit, smaller than I expected. The facility has numerous high-quality examples of elk, but the inside part of the facility can be visited in about half an hour. Worth seeing, just budget your time accordingly.

Beautiful presentation of elk and other Montana wildlife

By Bigfork Woodworker |

The foundation endeavors to preserve habitat for the purpose of preserving elk. Some might find it odd that both hunters and conservationists help to sponsor this organization because as elk habitat is saved, myriad other creatures as well as the land itself benefit. The headquarters features taxidermy displays of elk as well as other Montana wildlife, some set is a diarama, which everyone finds fascinating. Check before you come to be sure that they're open, then enjoy it. It's free, although they welcome contributions.

Worth a Visit!

By Vicki S |

The price is FREE, so how can you go wrong? There's an impressive sculpture of an elk at the entrance to the parking lot. Inside there is a Rocky Mountain diorama with several taxidermy animals. There is a lot of elk information, interesting videos to watch and some incredible racks on the mounted elk on display. We really enjoyed our visit. Take the time to visit this attraction!

Great museum

By krysiaco |

The staff inside is very helpful. There is a movie of how and where they are trying to help and save the elks. Also a wonderful display of animals. Well worth a visit.

Informative visit for the whole family!

By OregonExplorers4 |

During a long weekend back to Missoula to visit family, my husband and I decided to walk through the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation up Grant Creek. As soon as you walk through the main doors you see an amazing display of animals.

This facility is a well-planned walk through of nature of the local environment. Beautifully displayed and there is so much information available to read. Also, there is an area with a video presentation.

Enjoy walking through the gift shop, and the employees here are happy to answer any questions that you have in the Foundation. It is a family destination on a cold afternoon in Missoula. For the many years that we have driven up Grant Creek further to our family's home, why did we not stop in sooner????

Both hunters and non-hunters will enjoy and learn while walking through the Foundation's displays. There is plenty of parking here as well!

A must do!

By Danny5k |

Montana offers an abundance of wildlife, however, since it is seasonal the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation offers a 'hands on' opportunity to see things close up! Well managed, and an experience you will enjoy!

Truly educational

By ElmerJFudd4995 |

My family have been here several times and we always learn something more each time. The Foundation is trying to assist other parts of the country strengthen elk population as well. The facility itself is spacious, clean with displays and a theater running an educational video. The staff there are knowledgable about events and issues relating to elk. It would be better if the Foundation would have one dedicated staff member for this, but I suspect there's a lot of time when there are no or little visitiors in the facility. The stuffed mounts, including all kinds of wildlife (my boys loved the bears!) are excellent. The shop has a fine range of products; the proceeds go to the Foundation. You need not spend a lot of time there, but is a place you won't regret visiting.

Overwhelmingly Cool

By DDawnC |

The RMEF is, as you might imagine, chock full of elk. (A word of caution: those who are against hunting or taxidermy should NOT go to the RMEF!) When you enter, you are confronted with a diorama of a pair of battling bull elk that seem 10 times life size! All around the place are the mounted heads of world record elk, and it's truly amazing to see how big these animals can get. There is another large diorama containing many different animals native to the Rocky Mountains. There is also a theater room and a nicely-stocked gift shop. Both kids and adults can enjoy themselves at this attraction and learn some things in the process.

Worth a Visit

By CodyCo |

Whether you hunt elk or not or even if you don't know what an elk is, this is worth the stop. They have excellent family friendly displays, along with a very nice gift shop and a collection of remarkable heads. Located just a few blocks north of the Interstate, it is in a peaceful setting. A great place to stretch your legs, walk your pup, or sit along the creek and enjoy lunch. Very nicely done.

Realistic Display

By LIZ C |

Our son had done an internship there, so we visited, we very really pleased with the breadth & depth of information, and the realistic displays

By Stacy N |

Excellent displays and screen play of Museum. Audio displays make this come alive. Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation has captured some of MT's largest racks. Watch out you are in Elk territory!

Great nature walk

By blondeovbl |

On our nature walk around the grounds we encountered a nice whitetail buck. The kids enjoyed walking around and reading the many signs. The stroller needed to be carried during parts of the unpaved walk but we did not mind. The museum was fun.

We spent two hours here!

By MaverickKruse |

What a great place to visit. We walked here from our hotel (C'Mon Inn) on a paved path. Then they have a 1/2 mile nature trail. Informative and we saw a deer within 15 feet of us! The visitors center is impressive, for even me, the non-hunter in our house. Majestic mounts, educational. Very nice exhibit!

Great Cause, quiet afternoon activity

By walks4653 |

Impressing displays. I have friends that are members, so I thought I would stop in for something to do. Take your Camera. Great Parking

A Little Gem

By Peter C |

Saw this on Tripadvisor and as it was close to our hotel we paid it a visit. What a surprise - a really interesting and well presented exhibition of all things Elk (particularly of the area/State) and other wildlife as well. Very informative displays and staff could not have been more helpful and friendly. Go here and get to know more about what animals, including Elk, there are to see. And its free (do give a donation though!).

Educational and Interesting

By Sungron |

We stopped by on our way through Montana and were entertained and educated. They present a great video and the displays are phenomenal. Some of the antlers were almost unbelieveable and there is some world class taxidermy. The gift shop is nice and the general ambience is uplifting. We learned a lot about the species and man's effect on it. Entry was free.

Elk are amazing

By James O |

The Rocky Mountain Elk foundation is a must see in Missoula. This organization is responsible for protecting public lands and repopulating many states with Elk. The visitors center is very kid friendly. The little one is sure to get a sticker and antlers at the gift shop. The displays are educational and there is a movie room. The mounts are absolutely incredible. Best of all it is free. But a membership is only $35.00 and donations are surely appreciated.

By CCWSeattle |

Amazing to see all the animals of the area up close, and to realize the huge variety that exists in our NW forests.
Very well done!

Fun to learn Montana’s Wild Animals

By johngB1988SU |

Very good museum to explore and understand the State’s wild animals. Fun to see actual size display of animals as well as geological study. Good for the kids.

Way more fun than expected

By scienceteech |

My husband and I visited this site based on a previous review from a non-hunter who said they learned a lot and were impressed with the group's conservation efforts. We echo these comments completely.

We are no closer to being hunters than we were before, but we enjoyed learning about these magnificent animals, their historical range in North America, and RMEF's work to conserve and extend their range. The films on continuous play were interesting, although there were a few too many "commercials" for hunting (but they paid to build the facility and make the more interesting movies, so it's okay), and the interactive displays, set up for kids, were fun for all ages.

The 1/2 mile walking path with signs discussing features of elk habitat was an easy and informative stroll alongside a creek and through a meadowish area. We easily spent an hour and a half here, and left with a very positive impression of the organization, hope for the future of elk in North America, and our wallets just as full as when we pulled in. It's all free!

Wildlife in a box

By Constance P |

Attitude is not conservation, all about getting biggest trophies and killing all predators. Depressing.

A great Foundation

By Gene H |

Rocky Mountain Eik Foundation is working for conservation of game and land. I highly recommend for every hunter to join.

Learn about elk!

By margarethV476OA |

This is a small museum, with many taxidermy animals and a bit of an interactive aspect to it. I could see elementary students enjoying a field trip here. We dropped in to learn more about the wild animals of the area. It took us about 1 hour to visit the interior. There are picnic tables and walking trails surrounding the facility. Its only about 5 minutes by car outside of Missoula.

Balanced Perspective & Wonderful Taxidermy

By Clint L |

This is a fairly new building and location for the RMEF. It's really impressive. I was wishing that we had our grandkids during our visit. This place is free! Nice environmental balance and a thoughful approach.

Cool place

By -bellbay- |

Really cool place. Even for the non hunter it is simply an awesome display of some of the biggest elk ever.

Great displays

By rejoice2218 |

Awesome taxidermy displays. Very educational place to take a family of all ages. Self guided, so you can take as little or as much time as you want. Fun place to take pictures & selfies!

By RobertsFamof5 |

people we met at our campground recommended visiting here. The building is amazing and a lot of work went into making this visitor center informative for people like myself who do not hunt. We also walked around a short nature trail they have along the side of the building.

By KentuckyGirl |

Whether you are a hunter or just enjoy nature, you will like going to the RMEF museum. Admission was free, but you can make a donation, which was a no-brainer since they do such good work.

They have Elk and other animals on display and videos and short features showing their work and Elk in the wild. We thoroughly enjoyed it!

Great stop in Missoula. Kids lived it.

By Jaredites |

We made a couple stops going through Missoula to get our wiggles out. Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation is a great organization with a beautiful home office that was a perfect place to stop for an outdoors family who loves wildlife. They had beautiful displays as well as information on the organization and the elk. They also have a large lot with a short, educational, hiking trail around the property that we enjoyed and even saw deer on our stroll. Stop in.

Like Ducks Unlimited

By RoadCal46 |

If you want to know about elk and elk habitat, this is the place to go. There are trophy elk on display and an excellent film about hunting elk.

We didn't realize there was such an organization dedicated to preserving and increasing elk habitat in the USA.

I would have liked to see more shirts, hats and items without the foundation logo for sale.

Awesome!

By Tracie H |

This is great foundation that supports elk and other wildlife and their habitats. This particular facility has a nice exhibit of habitat preservation, trophy animal mounts, and a theater to view informative documentaries about RMEF.

A must for all elk hunters! Impressive mounts. Great information and an important organization for maintaining wild lands. Benefits much more than just elk!

Great Visitor Center

By Matt B |

What a nice place to visit. Beautiful mounts in a number of settings. Fair number of interactive booths in a short tour. If you are a member you should definitely visit. If you are a hunter, even from the east, you should be a member.

Very Interesting Place

By Vanessa W |

This place was very educational as I did not know that much about the animals of our region. They have beautiful mounts of many varieties of elk and other animals. The staff was friendly and very educational when it came to the animals.

Good Place to Learn About Elk and the Foundation

By TimL255 |

This is a free, modern exhibit that the whole family will enjoy. Many stuffed animals with explanations of their habitats. Many touch, see and hear exhibits. The foundation's store has plenty of clothing and other branded items for sale. Plan on about one hour for this site. It is worth the time.

Nice building and displays

By EmilyJOA |

I had an hour to kill and this place was convenient to the interstate and FREE! Very new and nice and interesting.

The best things in life are free

By MEKA54 |

This was a delightful little surprise that our friends recommended. Considering that there's no entrance fee, this lovely little place has a terrific indoor display that kept the young toddler in our group amused longer than we expected. The shaded, paved walk was perfect for me in my wheelchair, and even though we didn't see any elk, the plants, trees and creek and beautiful little deer that hung out with us made this a wonderful little break during our visit to Missoula. We loved it.

A Must for Hunters and Conservationist Alike

By tswolfe65 |

This is a great venue to learn about most of the wild life in Montana. It is not very big so all you need is an hour if that and it is free to boot. Definitely worth a quick stop.

Educational and Fun!

By Bridget K |

We stopped here while in Missoula for a night and were very impressed with the entire set up of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. My 3 kids age 8, 6, and 3 were all engaged in their hands on displays and excited to have things touch and learn about in regards to Elk and other wildlife. Their videos, learning activities and collections of specimens were all well done. We stayed about 45 minutes and it was just right for us.

A Must See for everyone!

By MTTraveler99 |

Locals and travelers will tell you that this place is terrific. Good place to take the kids, young and old, to see some great elk trophies and learn a bit about elk in the northwest.

Nice elk mounts.

By AF_Hiker |

The visitor's center covers the work of the RMEF. There are great displays of taxidermied wildlife, and some biology of Elk. There is also a room where trophy mounts of elk are displayed. I am a long-time member of RMEF, so it was cool to be at the visitor's center for this great organization.

Wow

By Matt J |

The manager at the Courtyard Marriott sent us here. It is less than a mile from the hotel. What a neat way to see Montana animals up close. We never realized how big an Elk actually was until we were right next to one. The animals are all stuffed but very life like. Very educational for our kids.

Interesting & educational

By Tess H |

I loved this exhibit hall. While its not huge or expansive its a nice short rest stop of a visit. Great little gift shop and an ongoing video room where you can rest while the kids touch & feel the exhibits.

Beautiful displays

What a nice visit. The displays are outstanding. We brought our three year old grandson and he really enjoyed it. Free admission. Employees were very nice and answered a lot of questions. Good movie to watch as well.

Great folks and a nice stop

By SpokaneHikerBoy |

We enjoyed the museum and collection of some truly marvelous trophies. For those that don't get to see mounts of this caliber very often this is a must see place. The RMEF does terrific work for preserving lands for the benefit of wildlife.

Nice displays

By Scott L |

Enjoyed the many mounts and displays. Also enjoyed the films and managed to pick up a few clothing items at a great sale.

Educational and Free!

By suts11 |

Free to visit the RMEF facility. Learn about historical territory of the elk, labors to reintroduce the elk into habitats and a very nice displays. Facility itself is very attractive and clean; also a small gift shop. There is a 1/2 mile walking trail within its 10 acre lot behind the main facility. Worth the stop!

By amandalea22 |

I loved the center. It has tons of information and some hands on displays. The have many mounts of all different species, including a trophy room. Nice gift shop. Definetly stop by. I believe it was free admission.

Great Displays

If you are into wildlife don't miss this place. The mounts are great and so many you can spend a lot of time there so plan on it. Great gift store as well

Montana vacation

By Seekercr |

We stopped at the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation on our way to Glacier Park. They have very nice interpretive displays and information appropriate for kids and adults. My wife also bought several tee shirts for the grand kids. This is well worth your time to see and a nice break from driving. For elk hunters a must stop.

RMEF

By Larry B |

This past Saturday the annual RMEF put on a great time, the dinner was Prime Rib or chicken with all of the sides. Fun was had by all, my 9 year old grand daughter had a blast, she won 2 raffle prizes during the event. Bob and his crew did an outstanding job.

Inspiring

A quick visit before going hunting will give insperation

Great for young children

By AngelaBarlow |

This was a great way to kill some time with my three young children. Clean and educational! The gift shop staff was friendly, but it is expensive and not much variety.

Awesome! Loved it!

By Misty A |

Great place! I loved it, but I am a hunter. Lot's of families with kids! Interactive programs and the staff was wonderful!

Disappointed

By Sonja D |

Travelled from Canada specifically to see this place. It was closed due to construction. Website and phone did not indicate that! So sad we did not get to see the facility!!

Very educational

By OregonTravelingGirl |

This is a must-stop for hunters and anyone interested in conservation. They have beautiful displays with lots of information on what the RMEF has done for conservation and habitat restoration, not just for elk, but for other wildlife. We loved seeing the displays of the magnificent bulls. They have a great gift shop as well and RMEF members get a 10% discount.

This was a great place to visit.

By 1carolynw |

This was a very interesting place to see, had excellent taxidermy, and great information about their foundation. The staff were knowledgeable and were very willing to answer questions. This would be an excellent place for a school field trip.

Beautiful facility!

By 362marshac |

Great, informative place to take a nice break and learn about elk and local wildlife. We enjoyed the short nature trail and saw some very tame deer as well as lots of birds.

Interactive room and friendly staff

By Marjorie G |

My husband is a member, so when I went up to Hamilton to watch my 5-year-old grandson, he suggested we check this out.
Who would have thought that the ONE room, alone, would provide a 5-year-old with TWO HOURS of entertainment! Of course, he's a huge nature fan.
The one room has a panorama of animals that goes along with a screen showing what each animal is. So, it was like a scavenger hunt for each animal that you don't see at first. And the screens give great information on each animal.
There is also a room that highlights sounds, shows pellets you can touch, as well as skeletons. Another room shows migration of the Montana herds.

Also, do note that there is no charge to visit these rooms.

We were greeted as soon as we came in by one of the employees, who came and put a cardboard hat of antlers on my grandson, and gave him some stickers. When we were done, as per request for a particular t-shirt from my husband from the gift shop, I looked at what was hanging, and didn't find the t-shirt, so I called him to see what other shirt he wanted. I then looked at one for my grandson. While still shopping, one of the other employees came up and said she heard my conversation, and asked what shirt it was. When I told her, she pointed to the wall, and there it was. (Never mind my lack of awareness, lol..)

As a member, if you shop, you get a discount, too.

Overall, the trip was worth the drive, and my grandson was still talking about it, days later. I'm glad we took the day to check it out.

SUPER Mounts

By Liz45277 |

Very well set up and a good film to watch. No charge for entrance is a big plus.Learning about elk is very interesting to adults and children. No way to get bored and has a homey feeling. The gift shop is very nice and reasonable . No problem parking .

Beautiful!

By NPHikers |

We enjoyed our visit. It was very educational and informative. The grounds and building are beautiful. It is worth seeing if you're in the area.

Must see!

By Rob H |

Even if you are not an outdoorsman you will like the interactive displays and the history lessons. Great place to take anyone including children. Kids are encouraged to touch and interact with the displays. It's fun to watch adults "sneak" a touch as well. Everyone appears to love the elk call display.

Interesting

By donjuan_13 |

This is a very interesting place if you like animals and the outdoors. Interactive displays and some trophy elk mounts on the wall. They have an interesting movie and there is a walking trail right outside the door to get a little nature time. A great thing and it's free!

Definitely worth a stop if passing by on I90

By IdaPole |

A great free visitors center not just about elk but all North American Wildlife. Just a minute off the interstate. Easy to maneuver around.

Not a hunter

By PB H |

Good exhibits but since we are not hunters, we were not interested in all the videos and information. I was hoping for some "live" elk and animals but all were stuffed!

Great museum!

By Jnkstevens |

We were told about the foundation from a local business owner. Great displays of wildlife. Very educational. Has several Elk displays and the region of the west they came from. Very educational.

Kids enjoyed it

By ThorCanada |

A fun, free stop in Missoula. Great film, lovely building and informative displays are worth a visit. If youare into hunting there is lots of information available and several mounted trophy elk.

Very nice and informatiive

By gaclough |

This is located right next to the C'Mon Inn, so we walked to it. It is very informative and interesting including a walk around the grounds.

Interesting, but take with a grain of salt!

By Brian R |

Great museum! Very pretty and informative. Just remember that they are selling a political agenda, and as long as you remember that you will be fine. A nice place to look around.

Elks Rule

By Norm J |

Good overview of elk and its habitat. This museum is founded by the the Elk Foundation that is interested in preserving and hunting elk. Excellent dioramas of elk and other wildlife, including a very slinky mountain lion.

An educational experience

By Jan H |

I enjoyed the information available at the Foundation. It was amazing to find out all the history of the Foundation and findings in the area.

Nice displays and walking trail

By KariG668 |

Stopped here after being recommended by the woman at our motel (we were looking for an indoor activity to do with our boys). It was raining so we headed over to Missoula for some exploring. Very nice displays and lots of mounts. Small theater with a movie playing and a gift shop. Has an outdoor walking trail that goes by the creek.

Inside the bldging

By Dungeon S |

Interior is nice and the displays interesting -- visited the center while biking on the Grant Creek bike trail that runs alongside the center -- one note, they do not like bikers/walkers parking cars in their lot!

Must do it

By Rna A |

On our way we stopped there I felt so amazing one of the places you must see
This is a MUST GO TO place when you visit the Missoula Montana area. You get to see some real Boone & Crockett head mounts of some great trophy elk and you can see a mountain lion, beaver, skunk, birds of prey, beaver, dear, moose and on and on. Yes they are stuffed (taxidermy head mounts) but you get to see them up close and personal. Great gift shop, great employees and there's a free theater where they show nature shows and hunting techniques. For someone who isn't able to get up close and personal it's a great place.

wonderful animals, information

By James A |

Enjoyed getting out of the rain, seeing all the stuffed animals, heads, video on hunting elk. Learned a lot

Buffalo

By Nancy T |

The museum has wonderful stuffed animals and interesting information. The drive around the park has animals to stop and view. Each time we visited we saw different animals while driving around. Buffalo and deer this trip.

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Strives for Education and Balance...

By MedicineHawk |

This is an excellent stop for any who are interested in the local wildlife. Education and information is what this place is all about!

Great Organization

By Ralph C |

Attended the annual RMEF banquet. As always it was a fabulous time raising money for an excellent conservation organization

Educational

By EiffelBlue |

There are some ok hiking trails commected to the interpretive center, but I'd drive a little further afield for some really good (and less crowded) trails in the summer. In the winter, there are no crowds, and the flatter, wider trails here make for easier hiking in wintery conditions. Give yourself 20 minutes to a half hour to poke around inside, though. Many of the taxidermied animals are from the Philip. L. Wright Zoological Museum at UM. Pretty neat!

My Kind of Place

By Jacobe B |

I have fallen in love with the Rocky Mountains and love the outdoors in general. Elk are some of the coolest creatures in nature and this place is packed full of information for all who are interested in the outdoors and elk.

Beautiful new looking buiding

By drew0987 |

Informative and well kept inside and out. Staff was friendly and helpful with questions we had about other things in town. We recommend this stop if you are in the area.

Interesting place

By 14Lynne321 |

Expensive clothing, but for a worthwhile cause and they are different looking. Informative about the animals and their habitat.

Wow there are some big elk!

By Quintersfamily |

Another chance to escape the heat in this educational place. There are lots of facts about wildlife in the area, not just elk. There are exhibits of elk all around. There is a lot to be learned about the population, not just shooting for sport or trophy. FREE so stop in and learn a thing or two while you enjoy the AC.

This is cool stop!

By DocW543 |

They have great exhibits, and the facilities are quite nice. Many examples of animals, and a lot of history. Also, exhibits of some amazing firearms.

Great educational opportunities

By zoo414 |

Enjoyed seeing all the animals at the RMEF, it was great to see things up close that I've seen in the wild. Definitely recommend stopping by if you're in Missoula.

Wonderful experience

By Rick O |

Really nicely presented showroom with several displays and elk mounts. Interesting films running throughout the day. Very clean and well presented exhibits.

Worth a visit!

By Sara T |

They have done a wonderful job of presenting their mission and their conservation efforts. The visitor center has a lot of stuffed animals and explains where the elk were shot. We also did the walk around the center. Which was okay, but a little boring. Worth a visit!

Interesting

By Geneva B |

This is a very hands on place to visit. It is interesting and educational for people of all ages and has a nice little gift shop that is staffed with knowledgeable people if you have questions..

Great Organizarion

By Ralph C |

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation does as it's name proclaims, protecting big game habitate. Any money going into the foundation is used to protect the elk population of the united states and reintroduce elk in states where they used to live

Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation

By GrandmaLisa1964 |

I loved it there, lots of information to take in the prices are a bit high in the gift shop but it is a nice little shop to browse through

What a great place

By P T |

Right off the highway and free !

So many and cool animals and information about them, plenty of educational items for the family and some of it is hands on.

Just walk around, stretch your legs and gawk at the massive elk.

Be sure a join the RMEF on the way out, they are a great organization and you get a top shelf magazine to boot.

great place to see and learn

By 926duanea |

My only complaint is that the place is not 10 times bigger! I took my wife and son and it was very enjoyable until i go to the ust want to keep seeing more! Now let's talk about the gift shop! So many great things I wished I have left my wallet in the car. You just have to have shirts, hast, coast, on and on.The selection is great, the want of stuff as you go through the displays, along with the hands on things for the kids just wants you to buy everything they have. Also I must say the quality of the items is well worth the money. Plan your time so you can see the movie and walk the outside trails. This is a great organization to support no matter if you are a hunter or not.

Excellent visit

By R G |

If you are a follower of Elk this place is well worth the visit, great information and a Great Foundations

Perfect time killer

By ChazzleDazzle11 |

I love how knowledgeable all the staff were, and how in depth each of the exhibits were! I learned quite a bit about the foundation and how they have helped a very important species in the rocky mountain ecosystem

Very Interesting!

By PerryE1961 |

I love wildlife and we do not have any Elk where we currently live. This foundation was very impressive and had tons of information that kept my attention the entire time. I had to leave sooner than I wanted so I will be back next time I am in Missoula. Great place!

Worth a visit, easy drive to airport

By Erin F |

I've enjoyed visiting the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation on a couple occasions with family and friends visiting from out of town. Their interactive exhibits are great for all ages. Most special is the story of reintroducing elk nationally through an impressive and broad partnership. It's a quick and easy drive to the airport, an enjoyable last adventure if you have 20 minutes or longer to explore.

Be Sure to Take the Family Nature Trail

By Joan W |

I love this place and all the worthwhile things the foundation does. The exhibits are fantastic. Interactive exhibits and specimens of animals are of high quality. Three exhibits that particularly interested me were (1) the location of elk in the past and today (you could go region by region and state by state to see what the foundation has done to increase elk population and the total number of elk today in each state (2) the sounds of nature (a woodpecker drilling on a tree, mother elk and her calf communicating, or bighorn sheep butting heads, etc.) and (3) wonderful examples of trophy elk and explanation of rating system for typical and non-typical specimens.

Videos run continuously, there is a gift shop with excellent selection of merchandise and a sitting area where you can read more about elk and other wildlife. A fun interactive exhibit was trying to lift an antler and then imagining walking around with two on your head would be like.

Be sure to SAVE TIME for the FAMILY NATURE TRAIL through a riparian area which is about one half mile and has ten informative signs along the way. The signs give you the information from an elk's point of view and explain how the Foundation has helped solve the problem. Most of the trail is paved, but if you have a stroller, wheelchair or other assistive device you will have to return via the route you came as the trail is too steep, too narrow, and has uneven surface in one section on the left behind the buildings. Lots of wildflowers were out when I was there providing a wonderful scent. Birds were singing and the sound of the babbling brook next to the trail made you forget you were in a metropolitan area, not out in the wilderness.
