Park

By rbuskey106 |

Great little city park. Very clean, the city has plenty of staff to maintain it. Great place for a nice walk. Will return.

Fun place!

By Hgtravl |

This park has so much to offer... Beauty, photographs to be taken, a historical old graveyard, stuff for kids to do. I spent a full day here and didnt even feel like I saw half of what it had to offer.

Monday Afternoon

By Tom B |

We stopped here after leaving the central city area on the way back to our hotel. Very large park with nice open expanses. Worth a relaxing stop.

Spectacular

By CoquiD |

The gardens are breathtakingly beautiful, peaceful and romantic. The botanical gardens had a number of exotic plants, flowers and beautiful fish ponds. This is a perfect place for picnicking, picture taking, or just walking and enjoying the view. Just a lot of natural beauty everywhere you look. You must try the carousel, whether you're with kids or not. Overall it is a gorgeous place with many varied attractions, good for families or couples. Being there you completely forget you're in the middle of a big busy city. I hope to visit again!

Great City Park!

By Robert E |

Roger Williams Park is on the southern end of Providence, easily accessible from I-95.
It has a remarkable zoo, with an interestin collection of animals (polar bears, snow leopards, camels, giraffes and much more). There is a botanical garden with a collection of local plants, acres of green grass, miles of paths, and a carousel! What more could you want in a city park??

Very Beautiful park

By John |

The park is very beautiful, it has a big pond that has ducks, geese and swans that frequent it and many monuments that tell the history of the park and providence.

Polar Bear Zoo!!!

By SrijitNewYork |

I used to visit this place with my nephews only for the polar bears. The kids had never seen one before. It is a nicely kept zoo. Some cages were empty. Not too many visitors on the day we visited. But a great experience.

Roger Williams Park

By kappy26 |

This is one of the prettiest parks in Providence. Do spend a few hours if spending some time in Providence.

Large and lovely land

By ThePackedBag |

The park is an elaborately landscaped 427-acre city park and is a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The land was a gift to the people of Providence in 1871, in accordance with the will of Betsy Williams, the great-great-great-granddaughter, and last surviving descendant of RW who was granted it in 1638 by Canonicus, chief of the Narragansett tribe.

This is an enormous park with huge lakes, a vintage carousel and Japanese Garden, among other surprises.

winter time just as nice

By barginfinders2012 |

Did you know in the winter time the zoo is at a reduced price and you can walk around and see and spend more time looking at the animals and the special areas of the zoo.

They show as many animals as they can who can take the weather conditions of the day and all the indoor atractions are open and warm! the grounds are just as beautiful and the workers just as friendly and helpful. there web cite also has alot more info about winter activities and hours and special events during winter vacation if tey are having any. Though all the animals are not availabile to see there are many and you can get a better view then the very busy times. The summer is just as wonderful but I thought I would let visitors know the late fall and winter can be just as fun and very pretty if you have just a few snow flakes falling down as you walk. It costs less as I have mentioned which can help a family on a budget!

Enjoy

Great Place

By userChris |

I have been here only two time. Most of my time was spent at the zoo, but there is so much more to do here, it is a great place to spend the whole day!
So much history, so much nature, and so much more!

Bring a lunch, a ball, and a camera. Plan to make no plans but just have fun.

Lots of fun for the whole day

By kate1074 |

Love this place. Lots to see and do. A little expensive but not a quick trip. Our zoo pass is a reciprocol to RWP so when we visit family it is a great daytrip.

poor little goose

By Rebecca D |

I would have given the park a "very good" because it appeared to be well-maintained and the dock I sat on at Polo Lake was very charming, but I was very disturbed upon finding out that there was not a single person in the park that was able to assist a goose that had a fishing hook stuck in its face.

When I called park staff they said that they did not have anyone on staff that could handle the animals in the park (outside the Zoo I guess?) and proceeded to direct me around to other organizations in the surrounding area (not even to someone in the park). I spoke to at least three different organizations that said they were not able to help, or did not have proper staffing to do so (one organization said they would come pick it up if I trapped it for them....). I asked the last person why he thought that Roger Williams Park did not have someone on their staff that could help an animal on their property (outside the zoo) and he said that it was probably indifference...

Like I said, nice park, but the lack of adequate staffing for a park where lots of animals, other than the ones in the zoo, use on a daily basis, made me rate this place as terrible.

Lots to see

By Suzanne M |

7/1/2017 My husband and I spent three hours walking around this park. Certain areas are in need of TLC. However,it is obvious that it is going through upgrades as evidenced by recent work. There are many sculptures that are not identified. We went to the Botanical Garden which is a bargain at $5. Though small,it had some interesting specimens. The Temple of Music is a lovely structure. There are several walking trails cross crossing this expansive park. There are numerous attractions for children such as a Zoo,Carousel, boat rides on the many "lakes." My only real complaint is that we could have used a map. At one pont, we were " lost. " No where did I see an informational kiosk with maps.

Beautiful surroundings, very peaceful

By Maurits J |

Great days outing, very tranquil and beautiful. Enjoy a play in the park with the family or go the zoo (15 dollar fee required).

A nice park

By RunrDave |

Roger Williams Park is small (approximately 4 acres) and pleasant. Within the park, you'll find Roger Williams National Memorial site -- a tribute to Roger Williams, the founder of Providence and an ardent early advocate for religious freedom. The park also offers a great view of the State Capitol building.

Nice Botanical Garden

By ljutm |

Botanical garden was quite lovely. It's very small but quaint. I wish that most plants could have been tagged. It was very hot and humid when we were there and good thing was there was a bubbler by the restrooms and fascinating enough the bathrooms have air conditioner. Refreshing!

Quaint Park

By Kathryn S |

My husband and I had a day to ourselves while my son was visiting Brown University. We decieded to drive to Roger Williams Park as that seems to be one of the main attractions in Provident. Park was a short driving distance from Provident. No fee to go into the park. Cute small park. They had an area with a carousel and a small train that went around the building. They had an area for a pony ride and they had a small area for a Swan boat ride - $5 per person for 15 minutes. A great park for parents of small kids to run around - park also had a playground. Nice place to walk around for an hour or so. There was also a museum there and a zoo if interested.

Enjoyable park, just avoid the zoo

By Iliya Y |

The park itself is free, spacious and very pleasant. The zoo has gone down hill in recent years and isn't worth the price of admission, but spending an afternoon in the park in general is a pleasure

Timeless tree-lined haven.

By MarySS1973 |

I've seen the leaves change there for over 60 years....however, the view along the walkways, bridges and vantage points all have a sweet beauty that never changes. It's perfect for walkers and lovely spots to daydream on a blanket. Large enough to escape the noise of the roads surrounding the park, but it feels like it belongs to you alone as you stroll along.

Fall in Love

By time4travelz |

This park is gorgeous. I fell in love with its beauty. The weather was perfect. My family, enjoyed strolling around the park. The swan boats were a plus. Even our teen enjoyed this park! The fall foliage was just starting to show in certain spots. I’m sure it’s even more beautiful when full fall foliage occurs.

Beautiful gem!

By EmIsh Adventures |

Just a beautiful park to visit! Has the historic feel to it for sure! There's a beautiful indoor carousel as well, along with bridges and beautiful lakes. A must go to for sure!

Pretty place but needs repair

By michd61 |

My husband and I took a walk around the park. Interesting park, pretty but some areas just need repairs. Plenty of free parking. Pleasant place.

Great view

By EKM12014 |

Went after dinner on Thayer one night and the views were stunning. Great little spot for a future picnic!

Good Zoo

By Renee555Bk |

When I was a kid back in the seventies we would come here but it was nothing special. The zoo was closed in the 80’s and redone. Recently I decided to come back with the grandchildren and I was very surprised. It is a nice zoo, very kid friendly. It is easy to get around, very clean and the animals are well taken care of. Are there fancier zoos out there? Sure, but this zoo is a good place to spend a day with the children. Only disappointment is the lack of big cats, there are no lions or tigers.

Beautiful area

By mcdonapa |

Great walking area with lots of history. Can get some good exercise walking the grounds of the park. Makes more room for seafood!!

must see while you visit RI

By Philip F |

This park had some many to offer for children, families, couples,or anyone interest in garden related events. The Zoo is also located within the park with admission fee. The botanical garden is another added feature that offer various activities to the public

A day at the park

By flolass |

Great park outside Providence. Picnic areas, swan boats, trails, carousel, Japanese garden and great playground! Great history too!

Nice small zoo

By andicb03 |

Liked the intimacy--could be quite close to animals. No crowded. Very child-friendly.
Disappointed that the Moon Bear did not come out to play! Smaller zoo than expected.

Beautiful Park

By scronk73 |

This is a beautiful park with many different sights within the grounds. There is a zoo, a botanical garden, a carousel, and a museum of Natural History

Review of Botanical Garden

By grrprr |

Driving from Boston to New York we wanted to break the drive up and chose this place as the first stop. We did not do that much research so we were surprised to find that the gardens were a part of a larger park.

The park does look interesting, but we only visited the garden.

Compared to the numerous other gardens we have seen in our travels, unfortunately RW does not fare well. The greenhouses are filled with a variety of plants. The perineal garden and roses are nice.

The volunteers are a hard working bunch. We spent time talking with three and found them to very knowledgeable and friendly.

A couple of things would make a visit better. First, a sign pointing to the entrance. We actually could have walked through an open gate but chose to check out the small building we spotted (which turned out to be the admission booth). Signs for the door to the restrooms.

Large park with water views

By Celeste D |

The park is large with lots of trails and features. I liked waking around the trails seeing different water views. I especially liked the dirt trail along the lake. The Japanese garden was nice but crowded. I wished I would have come earlier in the day to see the botanical garden. The parking was terrible if you come on a weekend. The spot I found didn't have a turnaround so everyone had to back out to get to the main road through the park.

A Beautiful Park in the City

By Keesar |

Roger Williams Park is a gem. There are seasonal flower gardens, a tropical greenhouse, a top notch zoo, a pond, a carousel, and great clay tennis courts. There is plenty of parking all about the park. There is a fee for the zoo and the tennis courts.

Tip: Make sure you secure valuables out of view in your car.

New England Charm

By BobLeblaw |

A visit to this park will automatically lower your blood pressure. Serene and beautiful, it forces you to relax and appreciate the beauty of a New England park. Make sure to ride the carousel; it's a classic.

Great place to spend a Sunday afternoon, so much to see and do!

By WorldTravelerjaq |

This is a fantastic park! From Carousels to Botanical Gardens, to Swan Boats to the Zoo, there's so much to see and do at this fantastic park!! One of the gems in Providence!

Huge Park

By Sofya B |

The park is huge, but it has little signage. We parked the car somewhere on the road and went to the rosarium. The rose bushes were not taken good care of. There is a great gazebo, so we took very nice pictures there.

Let the kids blow off steam

By Kari F |

I took the kids to Roger Williams Park one afternoon while we were in Providence and my husband was in training for business. It was not hard to find the park itself but once in the park I found it interesting to navigate. The signage is not fantastic and I missed the playground we were looking for once and had to go around the park and turn back. The playground by the carousel was wonderful. It's fenced in so kids can't go wandering off too far. There was a good variety of play gyms and other activities in the playground (the Candyland walk was fun for my kids). It was a nice (and free) way to get the kids out in the beautiful Rhode Island weather and blow off some steam for a while!

Beautiful

By Shanzym |

I attended a wedding here a few weeks back and was blown away by this park! It's huge with several different areas to investigate. If we'd had more time it would be a great place to spend the afternoon!

What to Do: Zoo, Paddle, or Picnic?

By happyincharlietown |

The animals are usually the yearround attraction at Roger Williams Park Zoo, but it is walkable also with beautiful sculptures, the Arcade, and Gazebo. During the summer you can rent paddle boats with a friend or family members which is a nice way to spend a warm Providence afternoon. There are excellent places to picnic with a view of the animals or gardens. I highly recommend this park for anyone of any age.

Provides a break from the city

By DMSMD64 |

We had intended to go to the zoo, but discovered that, I’m sure it’s due to COVID, you have to purchase tickets ahead of time so we wandered through the park. The park is fairly busy, It's an old park with historical buildings, e.g. the casino. Walking around it’s easy to forget you are on the middle of a city. The park is old therefore all the landscaping would be considered “mature “. The park, as well as the trails, are fairly well marked. There are numerous places to have a picnic or just sit and relax. On the downside, one thing I noticed was that there are not enough trash cans. I suspect his may be one of the reasons there is abundant trash on the ground. The water ways also appear a bit dirty and somewhat neglected. To enter the park is free, but there are charges for some of the amenities, e.g. carousel, swan boats, zoo. The is plenty of free parking and a snack bar in the park and zoo.

Gorgeous in Autumn

By John B J |

With its numerous trees and shrubs of many varieties, Roger Williams Park offers a wonderful opportunity for "leaf peeping" without taking a drive into the country. And you can also feed the ducks and Canada Geese that hang around the pond and elsewhere in the park.

By RIDeb |

Roger Williams Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as one of the first urban parks in the US. It has over 400 acres of land and 7 lakes. The land for the park was part of Roger Williams' family farm and the original farmhouse still exists along with the Williams' family burial ground. The park is also home to a zoo, the museum of natural history and planetarium, a botanical center, a boathouse and rentals, a carousel, the Temple to Music, several beautiful gardens,
green space, and many miles of walking paths. It is a lovely and serene place to visit every season of the year - for picnics or duck boating in the summer, sledding in the winter, the spring flower show, or a foliage walk in the fall. Historical tours are offered.

beautiful park with lovely lakes

By gypsytraveller47 |

Walked around the whole park. WAs so peaceful. Very serene and the botanical garden was cute. Loved also the community garden, with the hammock

By Gail A |

Well kept, clean and a great way to spend a day. Some nice concerts during the summer too. Take the swan-boats or visit the gardens -

Nice park

By Paris-Cemeteries |

I have to agree with those other reviewers who rated the park "average." It's sorely neglected: buildings with rotting roofs covered with tarps or just simply closed for no reason; grounds poorly maintained and, in the case of the Japanese garden, in sore need of weeding and, well, flowers.

The lakes are nice to be sure and the Swan paddle boats were fun ($15 for 20 minutes). The paths for walking are enjoyable and seem to meander everywhere -- but no maps available that we could see, though.

But it's a fine place to get away from the noise and grit of the inner city -- which is, of course, where the park is located, And the sculptures scattered around the park made me think of those in Central Park. I mean, who would've expected a statue of General Casimir Pulaski, father of the American Cavalry a stone's throw from the Swan boats!

Large park

By Colleen S |

went for a walk and ended up going a lot further than planned. Hard to navigate. Some trash. Areas of shade as well as out in the open.

Serene and Green

By ndmny |

On a warm day bring a picnic, a blanket, and a book and bask in this lush green, peaceful park. For a downtown park, this feels like you are away from the concrete.

Beautiful park

By blockparty216 |

This is a beautiful park to just drive through. there is a zoo and wonderful carasel and train. i loved just seeing the horses that were grazing.

Nice all seasons

By Luciana A Fonseca |

I used to live 2 blocks away and it is a place for long walks near by the lake. During the fall season the colors will take your breath away.

By jgreen7317 |

Just a great place for a picnic or a stroll with the family

Lots Of Different Areas InThis Park

By DLP |

A very spacious, well maintained Park. There is an area with athletic fields, a zoo, gardens, lakes(boating), a museum, trails for both walking & biking, playgrounds for younger children and lots of green grass for picnicking or relaxing in the sunshine. You can easily spend a day here.

Tennis 🎾

By Budmanri |

Public clay tennis courts for a fee. Larry Sack does a great job setting up matches and lessons . You can show up 9 am and there is usually a group looking to play .

Wedding at the Temple of Music!

By surta7 |

Well, short of getting lost after following the Temple of Music signs, it was nice. Very large park, should have better signs though.

First timers, thumbs up!

By Lizard211 |

WE made a weekend in Providence area with Waterfire Saturday night and the zoo the next morning. This was our first visit to Roger Williams, we typically go to Southwick as it is closer to our home base.

It was very clean, and paths were shaded. Absolutely loved the giraffe, zebra and elephant habitats. Plenty of viewing space from different angles on all animals, plenty of photo moments as well. There are restrooms and food stations along the way making it convenient for families.

One area was closed off the day we visited, the Wetlands Trail. Otherwise, for a few hours, a great place to see some awesome animals and be outdoors with your family.

Beautiful !!!!!

By judyrog |

THis is our go to place when we want a picnic and relaxing afternoon. In the middle of a neighbor hood and when you turn into the park you are in another world

By REDSOXFANTASTIC |

This park is absolutely beautiful. Pack a picnic and a blanket and enjoy yourself.

Beautiful Park

By Gerta J |

This is a beautiful park with lots of activities to do for any group age. There is a Zoo, a Botanical Garden, the Carousel, Childrens' Playground, Swan Rides, Museum and an enormous park. We went there with our 15 month old, during a visit in Providence and has such a great peaceful time. Our babygirl played for a while, then we went around for a stroll in the fresh air and fed the ducks. It was a great time.

Sprawling beautiful park

By David C |

Roger Williams Park is much bigger than I thought it would be. There are lakes and ponds and trails and large lawns for picnics. There are monuments and bridges and gardens and the old casino building; it’s quite beautiful. If you go on Friday nights in the summer you can experience the food trucks and live music. The playground is decent but my kids only stayed interested for about 20 minutes. There is also the carousel house where the kids can take a ride for $2.00. It’s a great park for a picnic or a walk or a photo shoot.

Beautiful but neglected

By evadecerca m |

The landscape is so beautiful, however casual littering seems to be a common thing there, and there are few garbage cans around. It seems like the park has seen better days. I still enjoy going there for long walks, and hope to see it get better.

Nice!

By Alison O |

Beautiful park with lots to do. Great zoo, carousel, Japanese Garden and other attractions. Feed the ducks, walk the roads, ice skate the pond, fly a kite, have a picnic and just relax on the grass. Nice for all ages. Check out the Pumpkin spectacular in October! Expensive but worth it.

Go explore!

By redrider52 |

Great place to explore and find a peaceful respite. I found many historic markers and statues in the park. With a zoo, carousel, botanical gardens, and swan boots, you are sure to have a fun day.
Zoo is free to Providence residents on first Saturday of each month.

A slice of the country in the city

By Barnicle T |

Roger William Park is an excellent place to visit all year round. The paddle boats are so much fun! A great place to unwind. Food trucks from all over the area come every Friday evening during the Summer an early Fall months!

By frederick45 |

not a bad place to stop between new york and providence. certainly a great place if you have kids and want to go there for the day. roger williams zoo is right next door!

Beautiful city park.

By oldmanwhotravels |

Very pretty with lakes, a carousel and even a zoo. They really need a small visitor center and a place with maps, etc.

By NJ-Tennessean |

It's easy to see why this park is considered one of the best urban parks in America. It's a beautiful oasis just minutes from a crowded capital city. The area has been saved from developers who would have cut down every tree, dredged the river, paved over the grass and hastily constructed a series of identical, 5000 square foot homes on 1/4 acre sized lots. Fortunately this is not the case as local residents have a place to walk, play, relax and have fun.

The park encompasses a large area and is located close to Interstate 95 off of exit 16. There is a zoo, museum, children's carousel, playground, music ampitheater, botanical garden, bridges and paths for walking along the river. Rides on boats in the shape of swans are available. It's no wonder it is so popular. Perhaps the only drawback is that it can get crowded. On a warm, sunny Saturday, the park was filled to overflowing. Even in the evenings or during work days there are many people. The people of Providence are fortunate to have this park to enjoy.

Very nice park

By Junior G |

The park is huge it has a zoo, garden and a paddle boat rides nice family place picnic areas and fishing

BEAUTIFUL in the Fall!

By KenmareLisa |

Great place to visit during the fall when the leaves are in full color! Safe for families and great to feed the ducks. My children love coming here, we pack a picnic, feed the ducks and take a stroll.

A great place to spend a day

By steven_the_teacher |

There are several zoos in Boston-Providence area; among the best of them is the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence. We visited there last weekend and, not having been there since I was a child, I wasn't sure if it was still as good as I remembered. I have to say- it was. It's not as big as some of the zoos and perhaps does not have as many animals (although it has a lot) but it is, I must say, the cleanest, easiest to walk and most interesting zoo I've been to in a long time. Most of the animals are in natural-looking surroundings, the walkways are all paved and only slightly inclined so that it's not a struggle to make your way around.

There were several animals that I had neither seen nor heard of before my visit, such as the Moon Bear and the Red Panda. There were also lots of animals which may be more well known that those two but are not that easy to find at zoos; the Anteater and the Whistling White Faced Duck come to mind. There;s even a farmyard with chickens and cows...I'm not quite sure why farm animals are displayed in a zoo but- to each his own.

All in all, it was a very entertaining and informative afternoon at the zoo. I recommend it highly.

Great Time at Roger Williams Park

By Kendra1225 |

This was my first time ever going here and I have to say, we had a blast. I love zoos and my husband used to go here as a kid so he wanted to take me. I think my favorite part was we got to watch the workers give the elephants a bath. They were so smart and they would listen to all the commands the workers told them. One of them even dropped the brush and the elephant picked it back up for him! It was really pretty scenery and lots of animals to look at. we had a blast.

By sedum37 |

We visited the Roger Williams Park (on June 14th) and weren't disappointed! As I am a garden fanatic we mostly concentrated on the gardens and botanical center at the park. The Botanical center opened recently (2007). Although the Botanical Center is a work in progress (exterior landscaping is still being installed), the two greenhouses are filled with many interesting and fascinating tropical plants too many to name.

Next we visited the Victorian Rose Garden and Japanese Garden found elsewhere in Roger Williams Park. The VIctorian Rose garden (located near the park entrance) was fabulous and peak bloom on Jun 14th! The Japanese Garden can be found behind the Carousel. Although the Japanese garden was recently renovated in 2006 we were a little disappointed in it as the garden upkeep hasn't been done.

There is a nominal fee to enter the botanical center ($3) while the Victorian Rose and Japanese gardens are free to enjoy.

In addition to the gardens mentioned above there are plenty of things for kids to enjoy: paddleboats on the pond can be rented, there are several playgrounds to enjoy, a neat carousel to ride, a natural history museum to explore and one of the best zoos in the country to enjoy.

Overall well worth visiting for both adults and kids!

Food Truck Friday!!

What a great introduction for me to the fabulous Roger Williams Park! I loved it. Centrally located with plenty of gorgeous green space.

Expansive Park Area

By HurricaneLuke88 |

Very expansive park on the South side of Providence. The park has multiple different attractions within it's own borders including a museum, a zoo, several memorials, and more. Definitely a must see during a stop in Providence, but it helps to know how much the park has to offer before going.

Weekend in Providence

We were exploring after visiting the zoo. WOW! This park in huge. I will be back to go geocaching with friends.

A QUIET RESPITE ON A HOT SUMMER'S DAY

By Brian H |

Spent several really peaceful hours here on a very hot, 90+, Labor Day - with my wife's 97 y.o. Mother. Peaceful, tranquil, plenty of comfortable, well-maintained benches under shading trees along the waterway adjacent to the swan boat pond.

We've been here in years past with our children when tey were young, and it seemed to be going downhill. I suspect they've been able to raise funds for needed upkeep, maintenance and new appointments, because it is really nice. Clean, safe, and welcoming. The Carousel Cafe is nice, but stops short of being really good because it offers no food, just desserts (ice cream in a dozen different forms) popcorn, candy bars ... low on the nutrition scale - and nothing for adults to eat. perhaps there's a food venue in the zoo, but that doesn't help when you're at the park and hoping to grab a bite of lunch. As well, there;s one trash receptacle right next to the cafe, but none along the picturesque walkways ... so, guess what?? - uncaring people (or those just too lazy to return to that one lone receptacle) just toss their refuse on the ground. A couple of barrels would really help.

The carousel is in beautiful shape - the ride isn't too expensive - $2.00 - but it's very short. And, yes, the 97 y.o. did ride the carousel ... but in the carriage.

By the way TA, you need another category: Family, period - not with teens or young children! For now I'll pick Friends because we're all friends in our family.

A spacious zoo with an assortment of animals, best for families with little kids

By Ann L |

Our visit was nice, the park is pretty and peaceful. There weren't a ton of animals, but we did see a zebra, vultures, an elephant, a monkey, even a few animals I had never heard of before. Well run, plenty of restrooms, some food/snack stands and gift shop. Good for little kids, there are play areas for them too. As an adult, I found it a tad boring, but it was a nice place to spend an afternoon.

By majcc4 |

Roger Williams Park is beautiful in any season with many varied activities. It's a great place for a walk, a bike ride, enjoying the zoo or the beautiful flowers. It is especially attractive in spring and fall. In winter it is great for sledding and ice skating. Great photo opportunities for photographers of all levels- a popular place for weddings. Make this a stop when visiting Providence.

Beautiful and large park

By Trisha H |

My boyfriend and I were in town for business, and afterwards we decided to find a park to go to since it was a lovely Spring day and we wanted to be outside. We were glad we found this gem! Beautiful surroundings and also there is a Natural History Museum and Zoo on premises, among many other things.

RWP

By Erik C |

Nice park, has potential to be a lot better. Sometimes it gets pretty dirty with trash on the sides of sidewalks. The Japanese garden would be amazing if they cleaned the water and kept it clean.

Nice Zoo & Park

By JustForFun401 |

Our family had a nice day walking around the zoo, then our kids played at the playground. The grounds are nicely maintained throughout. The visitors were a nice mix of families, couples, young, and old. We felt safe and relaxed walking around. The zoo animals looked like they were treated well and we had excellent viewing of most.

We are members of another zoo so we entered this one at 50% off, making admission quite reasonable. Food and drinks at the park are priced high, as is typical at most zoos around the country (i.e. $3 for a drink).

Recommend this zoo and the playground area for a low key, relaxing day.

By fml0814 |

Nice place to walk, beautiful pond, nr beautiful city of Providence.

Gigantic

By ritaswogger |

This park is huge it would be a great place to bring your kids and spend the day wondering around the whole place. There are so many options around the area with the zoo, botanical garden, and museum as well as the water.

GREAT MUSEUM

By EllenW11 |

great little museum next to the park if you just want a short little history lesson and to learn about the founder of Providence.

Just a fine and fancy ramble to the Zoo!

By cuciotta |

The Zoo is great! Natural habitats and endangered species are part of the experience. I love the giraffes and elephants. Oh, and don't miss a ride on the beautiful old carousel!

Great Zoo

By Stan K |

The whole park is great but the zoo is fabulous. My children and their children as my wife andme totally enjoy the zoo

Gem in the middle of Providence

By Windygnf |

Roger Williams Park is a beautiful area in the middle of the city. You can enjoy the park without spending a dime and/or you can go into the zoo, ride a Swan Boat, ride a merry-go-round, go on a duck boat and eat treats at the snack bar. There are many areas of the park to enjoy; just follow the signs!

Goldmine

By Deb C |

There's lots to do. Spend the day there. Paddle boats look cute, like big swans.

Wonderful Park

By RdTripper_USA |

We visited in November and were still very impressed with the beauty of this park. We can only imagine how wonderful this place is when "in season". The park has numerous walking paths and hiking "trails". It is spread out over a large area and is extremely well maintained. When you are in this park, you are actually in the heart of Providence, RI but you in no way get that feeling. As you experience the outer perimeter of the park you think... "how lucky would I be to live in one of those homes?", as there are neighborhoods that abut the park. Unless you notice that, you would never know you are that close to civilization. This park is a hidden gem!

Great Park

lots to see and do. The zoo was fantastic, lots of animals. love the giraffes and elephants. Huge park...

By BCD123 |

Good place to walk or run, especially in the fall. Cranston is close to Providence so if you are visiting it's worth a trip. There are tennis courts, a Zoo, a small museum. Very pretty.

Beautiful Park

So much to see and do at this park. Great scenery! Check out the Zoo, the Natural Science Museum, The Greenhouse, The Carousel, The Japanese Garden and monuments, etc. Definitely recommend this park.

Beautiful park

We decided to take a ride through park on our way home. It is beautiful and well maintained. walked around the rose garden and the Japanese garden. Then we rode the paddle boats, designed to look like swans, and the merry go round. Very pleasant day.

Great Park

This park is great. They have many attractions and very kid friendly. It is a must go to when in the area.

Great Place to Visit

By Debra V |

This park and huge and there is something for everyone. There is a zoo, a playground and if you enjoy walking there are plenty of trails. This park is beautiful year-round and makes for a great day trip. The zoo offers programs for the younger crowd if they are interested in animals and wildlife.

Zoo

By portdebrasaucambre |

Not crowded at all. Great variety of animals. Clean zoo. Easy to walk around.
It is a shame that, I think, the admission price is somewhat high. It prevents many inner city community residents from attending.

Great park to take your children

By BigOldie |

Took my grandchild to the carousal and train ride. I am looking forward to goingto the zoo when the spring comes. Very clean, picnic areas,Natural history museum, bontanical gardens.

Good Nature park

Good Botanical Garden, Expensive Zoo (may be good if you travel with small kids) not many trails to explore. Nice lakes and small artificial waterfall. Goodnature event

Lovely Oasis

By Annie O |

Know by locals and visitors alike, this is a green spot with much character. Stroll down the calm paths and hope to see a bird or two as a break in your sightseeing.

Beautiful historic city park

By Lauryc |

This is a beautiful park to explore, a must for history buffs. There is a perfectly preserved Colonial cottage on the grounds as well as a magnificent turn-of-the-century casino (not the gambling kind), historic Japanese gardens, a Temple of Music, where concerts are sometimes held, lots of specimen trees, lots of statues, swan boats, a carousel and a series of man-made ponds. Also a museum , which I have not been to in many years, and an arboratoruem, which I have actually never been inside. Roger Williams Park Zoo is located within the park.

Lovely place to walk and just enjoy

By barbmass |

My husband and I went to visit the botanical gardens but it was quite hot that dayand it had been very dry . I will definitely visit in the spring next year. The overall park is great, they have a carousel that you can ride for 2.00 and a small train that is adorable as well as swan paddle boats. Great place for a picnic and just walking around exploring. Do not feed the ducks or you will get a fine

Small scenic park off river

By CynthiaNP |

Offers shady respite in the summer, free concerts, maps and wonderful rangers to help you plan your visit.

Enjoyable Day

By stevencorri |

My husband and I were in Providence for the day for WaterFire. We decided to spend a couple of hours in the park before heading downtown. The park was lovely! We enjoyed walking around the grounds, but we also had a fantastic time on the carousel. We felt like kids again and really hated to leave.

Thanks to those who take such good care of this great park

By Barry N |

this is a outstanding place to bring the whole family to just enjoy and relax for a good part of the day. From playing games,to a picnic, to going to an outstanding zoo this has it all. Festivals are held here for all types of groups and the ponds have just so much by themselves to do.
the flower gardens and the botanical center are just great and the ponds from feeding the ducks and geese to taking out a duck boat and the location for kids to ride some nice clean rides.the music temple and the walk across to a little island. Nice landscaping with very old trees and a historic small cottage on the grounds. a nice building for holding events and weddings is also on the grounds.
all in all a great place. the staff should be commended on doing such a great job all around.

Definitely worth going out of your way for

By Susan D |

We spent the afternoon in the park by chance, enjoying a beautiful autumn day before the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular that evening. From the Boston area, I had never been down to Providence to this park. Big mistake. It is a gem of Victorian Era layout, with lovely carriage paths turned roadways, and many of the requisite educational attractions: zoo, museum, botanical gardens. On this day, however, we strolled around enjoying the beautiful fall foilage and the families with kids in their Halloween costumes. The carosel was a delight, as was the vibe of "good clean fun" in the park. There were a dozen or so food trucks around the carousel, as well as some local brew on tap - plenty of choices for a bite. The after dark illuminated swan boat rides just made me smile. The park is definitely worth going out of your way for, especially if you enjoy a good walk in pleasant surroundings.

The Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular was visually intriguing and well worth a visit. It is striking how much more inpact a Jack-O-Lantern has when it is at head hight, or in the trees.

A couple of things to be prepared for:

There are no printed maps of the park available, nor posted around the park. The map on the website was illegible when trying to read it from a phone. We ended up asking people along the way where various things were, and all people were very helpful

Oddly, there are ho hooks on the bathroom doors on which to hang your bag or coat. I found it particularly inconvenient with both a bag and a coat.

great park and zoo

By aerofig52 |

I have visited this park and zoo numerous times and have always found it a great place to go. The park is beautiful to walk around, have a picnic, go on the carousel. The zoo is great for everyone. It is a really nice zoo. The pumpkin exhibit in October is one of the best I have ever seen-professionally carved pumpkins with amazing portraits and scenes. Overall a great place to visit.

A lot to see and do!

By Nancy P |

We made two visits to the park while staying in Providence. First we went on a Friday night to go on the Swan Boats. During the Fall, they have illuminated Swan Boats. The Boats are all lit up different colors, and you pedal around the lake through lit up wire "tunnels". The cost is $10 per person and you can ride for 20 minutes, I think, but we were the first ones there, so they let us ride longer. It can be a romantic evening or just fun. Highly recommend. We went back on Sunday during the day. We visited the Botanical Gardens, Carousel park, the Japanese Garden with little foot bridges, and the Music Hall, which is an outdoor structure with columns that looks out over the water. Inside the structure are carved the names of very famous musicians. We didn't even see everything, but this is a great park to spend a day in.

A very nice park south of the city

By Chris W |

I have to say that between Roger Williams park and the zoo... This was a very nice place to spend the day while in providence. The auto path goes around for a good ways and either biking or walking is encouraged. The Zoo was a lot of fun with our grandson. A lot to do and a day well spent.

Wonderful Place!

By sparkleghost |

We have a Zoo membership and go quite frequently but it never gets old. My kids always have so much fun in the children's play area but you may want to bring along some dry clothes for them afterwards, or just leave this area for last, or first of its a hot day (it will keep em cool). The exhibits are all pretty amazing, although the otters never seem to come out of hiding...and I wish they had a bobcat and honey badger ;) They have elephants, giraffes, moon bears, seals, bald eagles, wallabies, a feeding/petting farm area for the kids, places for sitting and eating and more. In the park portion outside of the zoo they have an awesome playground, swan boats a rose garden and plenty of other areas for picnicking. We do like to go when it's not so crowded though as it can become quite packed, especially in the summer months when kids are out of school. Also, if you want to see the wetlands you might want to skip the end of August through the beginning of November as they close it off in preparation for the pumpkin spectacular (which is also pretty wonderful). The pumpkin display can also become too crowded so go early in the season, last time we went close to Halloween and waited in line at least 2 hrs before getting in and then it was so crowded inside that it was difficult to see some displays. Its a must see though.

Way more than just a park-the Natural History Museum is a gem.

By Jennifer J |

Roger Williams is a great tree and pond filled sprawling urban park. Most people associate the park with its Zoo, but the Natural History Museum is a real gem and perfect for a visit on a colder day. This Victorian style museum is filled with curios, taxidermied animals (great Polar Bears), fossils and more. There's even a small planetarium. The museum is kid friendly with a very reasonable admission($3 includes the planetarium show, $2 without). The park itself is free a great place to spend a weekend afternoon with friends, family or on a date:bring a picnic and a camera, walk or ride bikes, visit the museum, zoo, carousel or botanical gardens(fees associated with these attractions). In the summer you can often buy a slushy frozen lemonade from the cruising ice cream trucks.

Nice and quiet park

By Alisa S |

This is a really nice park for walking and taking a stroll, very pretty and has quite an extensive territory to walk around.

a beautiful park!

By lorri p |

very nice park, located within is a natural history museum, a botanical garden and conservatory, a zoo and more! good signs hard to get lost, very clean. be sure and get a map for the trees and monuments

Somewhat disappointing

By khpt1000_10 |

We brought our 2 grandchildren ages 6 and 2 to the zoo on a Saturday late in April. Many of the animals were not out or were not easy to find in their enclosure. Luckily there was good signage directing you to the building where the elephants were. We did get to see 3 elephants up close and the staff did do a few things with them to make it probably the best part of the trip. There were plenty of places to get food and the zoo was very clean. There also was enough shade to provide some relief from the sun. The food was as expected and was served quickly. Luckily there was a bouncy house there, which saved us a trip to the carousel park! They did offer face painting - the young lady doing it was very nice and got the job done quickly. Both the kids were delighted with what they had done- a tiger and a zebra. It is an additional $10 charge for each one, but the paint dried quickly and lasted throughout the trip.

Watch if you have Asthma

If you have Asthma be careful and bring Kleenex if you come during the summer. You can get a bad case of the sniffles if you don't watch out. Overall- amazing

Sunday at the zoo

The zoo is well maintained, has a good variety of animals. The day we visited, they were offering a behind the scenes look at the elephant and giraffe enclosure that was really interesting. Had 2 kids, 8 & 4, both enjoyed it.

Beautiful Urban Park

By Alma G |

This large space is the Central Park of Rhode Island. Beyond plenty of green space, it houses a natural history museum, planetarium, carousel, playground, pond complete with "swan boats" for rent, band shell for concerts, zoo, and botanical garden. There's a well-maintained walking path circling around the edges of the ponds. We enjoy taking walks here all year long!

I deducted one star because one of the ponds remains degraded/polluted. But the city is currently working on some renovations that, beyond the new signage I know about, will also, I hope, include cleaning out that pond.

One of my favorite parks

By CharlesJAB |

A nice mix of trails, open areas and drivable roads close to the city with a rural country feel. While I visit the park several times a year and love it, I do hold a little hate for the garbage that is not picked up exposing people to drug and sex waste products so to speak. Lol, not a place to let your kids collect random items from the ground....

family fun

By nikita138 |

beautiful grounds, plenty to do for the whole family. plenty of picnic space. the animals all have room to roam

My grandkids favorite

By thekeysfans |

my daughter has A season pass so we go there often. It's clean, fun and lots for the kids to do as well as see. Plenty of places to dine or bring your own and picnic. Plenty of benches,
Tables and restrooms. Great place

Mixed bag

By Bhingari |

We just went to the park on a whim. Did not have a specific destination in mind so just explored it. It is beautiful. First stop was at the carousal. Lot of kids stuff to do here including the duck paddle boats, train, food.
We drove further and found a really quiet spot on the perimeter where there is a small waterfall kind of a thing and sat there close to the lake. There are picnic tables here. The water sound was very soothing.
Drove further and found another structure of marble. Later found that it is called Temple to Music. This spot is really good for picnic.
We came full circle to the Japanese garden which we later realized was at the back of the Carousel. There are not many places with directions so we did not realize there was a Japanese garden behind the Carousel. This place is really neglected I think. They could do a better job with it.
Another structure we accidentally found while leaving was a garden of some sorts with trellises and flowering plants mainly roses. Might be the Rose garden. There was no signs anywhere so don't know what it was.
Overall we had a good visit exploring the park and planning for our next visit. However, would be nice if there were some information, maps, signs etc.

Excellent botanical gardens

By Colby R |

We went to the zoo and then had a picnic at the gardens. The building is beautiful. The plants are all well placed and maintained. It was a great day to be there. The cost is low to go to the gardens.

Must do! Illuminated Swan boats on Polo Lake in Roger WIlliams Park in conjunction with the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular

By Todd C |

Fun for the whole family. Enjoy the brisk fall air on a magical nighttime ride aboard illuminated swan boats on Polo Lake in Roger Williams Park, We had 4 of us in the boat, 1 adult and 3 children. (3,12,14) They all wanted to help paddle and steer the Swan boat. Great fun to incorporate in with a night at the Zoo for the Jack-O-Latern Spectacular. Plan accordingly but with the sun setting earlier, there is plenty of time to add this experience to your fun evening.
They do have a stand and sell hot chocolate/apple cider and they let you take it on the the ride.
Hours: 6-10 p.m. Adults (ages 16 and older): $10 (Ages 16 and older) Children (1-15 years): $5

Torn between "Very Good" and "Excellent"

By JoyGurrl |

So I'm torn between reviewing this as "very good" and "excellent" - heck - that's a good problem to have! What an amazing resource - over 400 acres of beautifully maintained park land with bodies of water and some interesting architecture. We checked out the carousel park because really - who could pass up a $2 carousel ride - even if they are over a certain age?

By nausetsunriseCK |

The park has the zoo in it, too. However, the park itself is a nice place to just relax, picnic, and enjoy the outdoors.

Peaceful

By Lyn P |

Nice area for kids and families, nice places for those seeking quiet and nature, nice walks and hikes, pretty ponds, blooming trees and lots of birds.

Stunning

By Katrina H |

Absolutely beautiful. After a long drive it was nice to walk around and enjoy nature. Beautiful little walk.

Lovely

By AmeliaAirheadOnTheRd |

This park is huge and has something of interest for everyone. There are a multitude of ponds with picnic tables, a boat launch (no motorized), a botanical garden, carousel, zoo, museum. The question is, what do you want to do with your day. Overall, the park is beautiful.
There were few people the day I went as it was Labor Day weekend with a flash flood predicted. And downpour and flood it did. We toured the botanical garden. Most surprisingly, we wandered the immediate outside of the greenhouses and found dawn redwoods, a large Japanese Umbrella pine and young lacebark maple in an area of neglect. The rose garden was in full bloom with great care from their volunteers and the perennial garden was vibrant.
I don't understand the priorities of Providence. This is an enormous spectacular park and yet the very young botanical garden is maintained by volunteers, when available. The massive vast lawns are well mowed, and yet the Betsey Williams cottage is in neglect. The concept of maintenance seems to be peculiar, which I noticed at several locations in Providence.

great park

By christine p |

park is clean. lots of family things to do,zoo paddle boats .play land for the little ones , great place just hand out with friends ans family

A nice open space

By tranzactnow |

There seems to be no doubt that Roger Williams is a legend around Providence so it is only fitting I guess that a very large park be named in his honour. On the day of our visit the park was covered in thick snow but the beauty of the place could still be seen. On a warmer day sitting in this park for a period of time would be a very nice activity.

Rough Jewel

By ClassicMovieGeek |

When you look at New York's Central Park you see a public space that's valued and cherished by the city to which it belongs. It's really sad but Roger Williams Park is terribly neglected by the city of Providence and they need to think seriously about severing their relationship. Maybe RWP would be happier with Cranston? That said, I highly recommend a visit for a stroll or a bike ride -- the place is still quite lovely (just don't get too close to the water in the lakes or you'll go septic) -- but do not think about staying too long because there's no damn place to go to the bathroom (unless the Carousel is open and its facilities happen to be functioning that day) and no place to throw your trash. Really, Providence? Is this how you treat our founding father's namesake?

Not Accessible Friendly!

By Eric M |

Let me first state that I love the park, it has beautiful trees, waterways, plants, etc.... However, I had to give it a poor rating, as the Park should be friendly & inviting to everyone. The main concern is that many of the walkways do not have accessible ramps, leading to dead ends when trying to cross the streets. I think that park management should take the time to push each other in a wheel chair and see for themselves the challenges that exist in the Park. In addition, the walkways need some repairs and need to be cleaned more regularly as the geese make a mess in certain areas.

Beautiful pictures especially at sunset

By Dugongs |

This is a hidden treasure and worth the time to stop and explore. There were a lot of families around just enjoying the sunshine and having fun out doors. It is a beautiful walk in immaculate gardens with so many lovely plants to take in. Take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the sights on offer. We all need to stop and smell the roses sometimes and this is an exceptional place to do so!

Lovely Park

By SR621 |

We came here for my sister's wedding (she did get a permit) in the Japanese Garden. The park was easily accessed and very easy to maneuver around with the signs along the roads. I look forward to coming another day to visit the carousel and the duck boat.

Lovely get away spot in a big city

By carcabbi92 |

We stopped here early before going to the pumpkin spectacular, it is a lovely park with many places to stop, relax, read, picnic, play. The casino is AMAZING. We were able to go inside. Drove through the park and stopped many times to take pictures and just enjoy the beautiful fall scenery. Wish we had more time to spend there- night time swan boats, carousel.

We were in Providence for a weekend, for the waterfire and were surprised by this great National Park

By annemarieloffeld |

We went inside, saw a short interesting movie about Roger Williams, had our picnic in their park, read all the very informative signs outside. It wa very nice to see this in the middle of Providence.

By Khoolton |

We attended a wedding here over the weekend at the Botanical Center and the Casino. Both places were beautiful and I recommend spending some time here if you are visiting Providence or the surrounding areas. Beautiful grounds include a zoo and a beautiful carousel! Simply lovely made even better if it's a gorgeous spring day.

An Oasis in the City

By hscheff |

The Zoo is delightful. Easy to get around with children. The gardens are well kept and the Casino can hold a variety of events including weddings and such. You can drive from place to place and usually find a space to part. You can picnic, sit under a tree and read and ride the paddle boats.

2014 Pumpkin Spectacular

By Gregory W |

What an awful night to go to the zoo! Sideways rain and wind from a nor'easter made our evening unique. No crowds. Time to look at all the displays without being rushed. (Except for the wind trying to hurry us along). Thoroughly enjoyed my visit. Thanks for being open. Recommend to all ages.

a GEM in the heart of the city

By JoeDiG1956 |

Beautiful grounds include mature trees, waterways, and special plantings (including a great Japanese garden). The carousel is a must for kids of all ages, as are the paddleboats that are rented out and are reasonable.

Circle Greenspace

By Michael E |

Roger Williams Park is a beautiful green space that is part of a circle loop drive that leads to several exhibits (planetarium, green open space, Roger Williams Zoo, Beautiful botanical garden).

The down side is the circle loop drives through several neighborhoods that are not very appealing and kinda of scary.

It is worth the day trip; however, only during day light hours because the location isn't in the best part of town.

Lovely park with many attractions.

By z0607 |

We went to the botanical gardens, and museum, and enjoyed the statues in the park. We did not hit the zoo this trip or do a picnic, but still had a wonderful morning in the park. This is quite a large park and having a car to drive from one area to another was good.

great park

By greenheron54 |

It rained while we were here but we got to do some walking around anyway.
There are nice roads and trails through gardens and along a creek. You can bring your own kayaks or rent paddle boats. We went in the botanical gardens which was nice.
There is a building with nice carousel ride and p,ace for kids to host a birthday party.
I would like to come back someday when the weather is nice.

Roger Williams Park

By Peg C |

We did not go to the zoo. We only enjoyed the park. It was oddly eerie, like an Atlas Obscura kind of place (atlasobscura.com). The park is fairly well used, but not like it used to be, and the population has changed. It's a historical old park that is full of charm. All of the landscaping is mature; paths are defined and well worn. There is an iron footpath bridge leading over the water by the Swan paddle boat rental. Lots of benches, shade, character. On the negative side, the park is not as pristine as it used to be. The water contained trash in spots and wasn't very clean. The landscaping is all overgrown and not well manicured, but it helps to show the age and adds to the eerie feeling. I liked the grass growing through the cobblestone path. It was fun to drive and walk through, but we didn't linger long. Strangely situated in the city now.

Pretty site

By chrispbridgen |

Be sure to check out the old settler cemetery across the road, behind the closed church. Gravestones that run all the way back past the American Revolution.

A wonderful day in the park

By Robin S |

So much to see and do... children love it. Bring a stroller for little ones.

Fall View

By vaneli034 |

If you happen to be by the Providence area in the fall, you must check out the Rogers Williams Park. The fall leaves are a beauty in itself, but add on the columns, the bridges, the ponds and lakes. They also have a jack-o-lantern display as well as a swan boat rides that light up. Quite the sight.

Family Time

Great place to take the kids

By Dale J |

FREE access to the park and the Roger Williams Park Zoo is located here as well which is a VERY good zoo (nationally ranked). There's a carousel for the kids, a huge playground, a Japanese flower garden, a botanical garden, plenty of walking trails. several huge ponds with ducks and geese. Paddle boats you can rent as well. Lots of places to picnic or sun bathe.

A large and wonderful park in an urban setting

By Anthony M |

The Roger Williams Park has delightful gardens, a boathouse that provides paddle swans for cruising the pond, a carousel for children, and a magnificent botanical garden.
It's worth visiting in all seasons of the year, particularly when the rose gardens are in full flower.

So much fun for kids. We all had a great visit!

By April V |

Road the train, road the 🎠 twice! Playground, took a ride with Spiderman, she walked the gardens with me she had an amazing time. We didn't hit the Zoo but you can do that too. All in one great big park. Plan to spend a whole day there not just 3hrs you'll never get to do it all.

Beautiful exotic animals

By Rosa S |

We went to this park with our grandkids and we all had great time.
Just the long walk to see all hundreds of animals all so beautiful and seeing what nature has to ofer it is amazing, the kids admire all of them and very intrigued with some of the animals so different from what they are use to see.
They loved the snakes, the giraffes most of all so elegant and tall
It an endless of curiosity for the kids and also for grown ups.
Great park to walk some goodies to buy on the way it can take a long part of the day to enjoy all that is there, they also offer camping for school kids who love to learn about animals and nature, great
Place send kids zoo camping.

My favorite place

It's a great stress reliever. Whenever I used to feel sad, I would come here amidst nature and lakes and relax. It's beautiful in suffer and winter time. In winters the lake freezes and it's an awesome experience.

Could be so nice

By anectine |

Looks like a dumped beauty...The grounds are neglected as are the paths. The botanic garden is a joke, with two small warehouses and a landscape suffering of neglect.

Beautiful setting...

By NewJerseyBitsy |

A beautiful setting for a picnic. Huge facility with plenty of room to spread out. Unfortunately there aren't enough bathroom facilities. We had to drive our guests over to the carousel area to use that bathroom, which had run out of toilet paper.

Not a lot of animals to see.

By freeneasy |

The best parts are the 2 playgrounds. One is free and one is inside the zoo, so you must pay the admission

Something for everyone

By MILLANDRO |

Roger Williams Park is truly a hidden gem as it is folded into an area of Providence/Cranston that is more on the upscale side yet close to the major highways. It is often called a city park for that reason. The park also contains seven lakes which comprise approximately 98 acres. Lots of acitivites are available. You can rent paddle boats, go to the Planetarium, have a picnic, take the kids on the carousel or jog. The best thing about this park is that it is free and I have always felt quite safe either walking through or spending time by myself taking photos, of which there are plenty of beautiful sights to behold. It is just a beautiful and well maintained park worthy of visits all year long.

Roger Williams Park Botanical Center

Hidden jewel in center of urban area. Tropical flowers in greenhouse, Van Gogh like perennial gardens, unusual tree and bush specimens. Many events planned during year, such as photography contest, fairy festival, and live music concerts. Admission only $3.00. Open 11 am to 4 pm Tuesday through Sunday, closed Monday. Inexpensive, relaxing family outing. A "don't miss"!

Beautiful in every way!!!

I have been going to Roger Williams Park all of my life (am 68). Have been to the zoo many times, have had many picnics in so many beautiful spots, the Food Truck Fridays are wonderful, the yearly POPS concert as well as so many other venues are always great. I still take hour long walks through the park as a part of my exercise, weekly regime. Obviously, I highly recommend!!!

Surprising Grounds - great place to spent a day

By imurbanwalker |

Wished we had more time to explore than the several hours we had actually allotted. The grounds are great for walkers, plenty to see with the zoo, Botanical Gardens, gazebo, etc. Lots of fun with a camera. Apparently quite populat with angulars is the number of fisherfolk was any indication.

We went there with our 2 nieces. Lots for them to do and safe too. Enjoyable day out, with facilities too.

Needles in the park

By Karen B |

My husband and I took our Chihuahuas for a walk down one of the trails, there were needles all over the ground, clothes, alcohol bottles broken. We actually had to carry the Chihuahuas out of the trail, I don't understand how Roger Williams professes to be a family park, how sad. I understand this is an epidemic with heroin users, but there needs to be more security in the Park so this activity doesn't take place.

Lovely park with much to see

By DawnAlba |

This beautiful public park has so much to offer. It surrounds an enormous pond, and has trees, flowers, sculptures and interesting buildings.
Take the time to ride the vintage carousel. Right next to that, you can ride a camel! (weather permitting)
The Museum is a hidden treasure; great for a rainy day.
The Botanical Center is a flowery oasis. We've attended special events there, too.
During the summer, don't miss Food Truck Fridays: music, fun and a wide variety of food trucks.
Providence has a treasure with this lovely park in the city.

love it here

By jenniferdC9120EQ |

it is so beautiful here we actually got our family photos taken here. if you want exercise or just a day outside with the kids its great. We like to feed the ducks (not sure if thats allowed) so much room to walk that even though its a popular place you have your own privacy and there is so much to explore your not likely to see it all in one day.

Nice Place to Visit

By SteveTTT |

This a huge sprawling park with things to do for the whole family. We came in the winter, so many of the attractions (e.g. Carousel) were closed. There is a large playground for kids, the zoo, lots of walking trails.

Beautiful Park - Must See in the Fall

By FoodieOnTheSide |

My boyfriend and I visited the Roger Williams park while waiting for the Halloween Jack-o-Lantern exhibit to open in the zoo. The fall colors were absolutely breathtaking. We took a romantic ride around the lake in one of their adorable swan paddle boats, and then a walk through the woods after. It's so peaceful there, not crowded at all. The next time I'm in the area I will definitely stop by here again!

Nice park lots to do

By Michael H |

There is so many things to do and places to take pictures well worth a stop if you have some time and are in the area

Great Park

By eichsttl |

We went to the Park this morning with our grandchildren. It was very nice. We strolled around the lakes while the ducks & geese were swimming. The is a very good free play ground which is excellent for younger children. There is a nice indoor carousel and paddle boats to ride. I’m told that the zoo is nice but we did not have time to go. Very pleasant park.

By redeco |

The Roger Williams Park Botanic Garden was established as recently as 2007, but the place is already beautifully developed with an expansive Palm House and several attached greenhouses encompassing 12,000 square feet. The water features and live fish along with attractive seating make this garden very appealing. The garden has lots of free parking and is located just beyond the large pond with swan boats and carousel.

Outside, there are several walkways lined with trees and plants and a small rose garden. Entrance price is $3. I recommend this attraction.

Very pretty.

By drums324 |

Great park. Can get crowded at times, especially if there are wedding parties. Overall a very nice park. Great for picnics and pictures. The carousel looks fun, but didn't go. Crowded! There are horse stables and a small naturalist museum which is very interesting.

summer paddle boat ride

By jcdcooks |

Roger William's Park is a great place to go and visit for couples,
family. Pretty grounds with a pond that you can rent paddle boats to paddle around . Plenty of places to walk, sit and relax, picnic. Pretty at Fall Foliage time with the trees changing color

Zoo trip

By sle3364 |

My husband, daughter and I visited the zoo for the first time. It was lovely. Lots of things to see but not too much walking. Feeding the giraffes was great fun.

Many updates to see

By CatRob_12 |

What Gem!
I have spent many years at the Park visiting the Zoo, playground, and Carousel, but never really appreciated the Park itself.
We walked the a Park today and we're most impressed. We love the new walk/bike lanes. Felt so safe. There are many updated sidewalks and lots of repairs being made. There is a new seated Zip line being constructed near the zoo entrance. It will be available without zoo entry fees. The grass in this vast Park was all mowed and liter was all picked up. Will be visiting here again to discover, more statues , visit the history museum, planetarium, botanical gardens and to just enjoy a walk.

Nice trails around the lakes

By Patricia T |

While in Warwick we wanted places to walk and the park provided nice trails around the lakes. Parking was plentiful and you could pick up the longer trail at several points around the park.

Absolutely gorgeous !

By Virginie P |

This is just like I pictured New England. Nature at its best. We went there in October and the foliage was beautiful. Very nice playgrounds for kids of all ages. Most of the attractions were closed because of the off season but it was still worth the trip. Bring your camera !

Turn the entire park into the zoo.

By |

This park is not mantained up to the standards of parks in other cities, it is the border of Cranston and a blighted neighborhood in Providence. We have not been there except to go to the zoo on free days.

Zoo & Temple of Music

By Beth S |

The zoo is a great place to bring your family. The temple is strangely placed in the large park but very beautiful with a great view of the pond. During the fall there is a red maple by the temple that turns fire red. A lovely place to photograph.

Nice Park

By ckb830 |

Lots of folks walk their dogs here, water, trails, beautiful plants & trees to look at. It's near the zoo, easy to get to. We spent about an hour here just walking. There are some benches to rest on.

Roger Williams Park

By Debra T |

Saturday afternoon August 27, 2016 Louis and I went to Roger Williams Park.
Address : 1000 Elmwood Avenue Providence, Rhode Island 02907.
Telephone number: 401 785-9450.
Free parking available all over this park.
There are swans, paddleboats for people to ride on, duck boat tours, and pirate boat rides.
People that got married that afternoon were taking pictures all over the place.
Something for everybody at this park.
Plenty of area to walk or drive around in.
Very clean park.
I believe that Roger Williams Park is open all year round, not exactly sure of the hours.
You have to follow the rules about feeding the birds, etc.
Louis and I had a nice time visiting Roger Williams Park.
Thank You.

Natural beauty at its best.

By Bobbie W |

Even if you don't want to visit the zoo, go to the park anyway. The grounds are just beautiful. There's a great carousel, a beautiful Japanese garden, eve pony rides. There is also paddle boats available for rent on the pond, a butterfly exhibit (check website for hours), botanical gardens and more. On a warm day, you can enjoy a picnic, fly kites, even check schedule for concerts at the Temple of Music. Have nothing to do? Go to the Roger Williams Park. You can also see Betsy Ross' house!

Something for everyone!

By Debbi B |

This is a very unique park that allows you to drive from attraction to attraction. It has a zoo, a botanical garden, carousel village, and more. On my visit I only had time for these 3. I could have spent more time at each one as this was an amazing park with something for everyone. Very close to the airport. The park itself is free but the attractions inside have various prices.

Perfect Park for Family Day of Relaxing

By AshofAllTravels |

This park has a little bit of everything! Visiting from the West Coast we underestimated its size and offerings. We thoroughly enjoyed the rose garden, community building, and Japanese gardens. We were sad to miss the carasoul and other activities on the lakes. We could have spent a whole day or more here and highly recommend this as a relaxing day trip to anyone visiting the area.

By Rackel S |

My husband and I took our engagement pictures here and they came out gorgeous.

The Walk

By bwmsdvs |

A good place to walk. If you want entertainment, there are paddle boats, pony rides, a small train ride and a carousel. On Fridays after 5pm, you can dabble in the multitude of food trucks to satisfy your hunger or bring your own picnic basket to spread out as you listen to the free entertainment.

Tranquility awaits you

By Adventure Diva |

This inviting park is great for a stroll in downtown Providence. Check out the Japanese Garden. Park is well kept.

Beautiful Park and A Must See in the Fall

By Tara H |

I am a photographer and love taking wedding pictures here. This is a great place to walk with kids and feed the ducks, go to the zoo, take a stroll on the duck paddle boats, exercise, or just take in nature.

Great little zoo - kinda "bigger on the inside."

By dekight |

This does not compare to zoos in the Bronk, DC, San Antonio, San Diego but it still meets your zoo needs when you have a craving for a zoo visit. Its clean, the animals have a decent amount of space and its not depressing (like the Mendon zoo!) If you're visiting from out of town, don't waste a vacation day here. You probably have soemthing similar near you.

Super Fun and Happy Day -- a true walk in the park!

By Kerry N |

We came as a family with toddlers. The park was beautiful, felt safe, and offered lots of fun. My daughter especially loved the carousel and Del's Lemonade! There were many families playing together and soaking in the sunny day. This is great place for families and a good alternative to spending lots of money when most kids just really just want to play with their parents anyway.

Lots to do for all!

By Tinkerbell016 |

Beautiful Park. Lovely well kept grounds to walk around, beautiful lakes. Kids had fun at the playground which is really great with lots to do. Just outside there is a lovely building with a cute carousel which the children really enjoyed. Outside there is a little train that goes a small way around the park - great for younger children and toddlers - our 5, 3 and 2 year olds loved it.

The swan boat rides across from the carousel look really cool and worth a visit but are slightly overpriced and we chose not to pay for this attraction.

Overall very much worth a visit for any age. Gorgeous spot.

Nice Afternoon With My Teen Daughter

By Sharron S |

I loved this zoo. It was small, but lovely to walk around. The giraffes were magnificent! It only took us 1.5 hours to walk through, and we took our time. Parking was free and plentiful.

What a great place to spend the day !!

By donnaloub |

This is a wonderful park to spend a relaxing fun day with the kids. Well groomed grounds, easy parking, terrific atmosphere totally geared to families and particularly kids!! There is a great play ground area, with Mr. Potatohead at the entrance. There is a small train ride, and best of all an elaborate Carousel (the old fashioned kind) that brings the kid and childhood memories out in all of us. There's pony rides, and swan shaped paddle boats on the clean small lake. The snack bar is totally accomoating to kids. First time I've seen one so much so. They have PB& J sandwiches ( 2.00 ), Mac & cheese (3.00), hot dogs, giant hot pretzels, ice cream, etc. and really reasonable in price. They have picnic tables thoughtfully located about, a botanical garden, nice pleasant waling areas. Just a really great place to hang out for a day. The park is free but the pony and carousel have a fee.You can get 6 rides on the carousel for 10.00. We will definitely come here again soon !!

Nice place for a picnic

By Sam I |

Good place to take a picnic basket and enjoy....
Walk around and have fun.....There is a small zoo nearby but I din't go...If you have kids, you might enjoy

Begin your historical tour of Providence, here!

By eventsbythirteen |

Thsi centrally located park is operated by the National Park Service. It's visitors center has the complete history of the beginnings of Rhode Island and the Providence Plantations, and it's founders, in particular, Roger Williams.

The park itself, is a natural haven in the middle of the city, replete with beautiful landscape! Totally worthy of a visit!

Not what the pictures show

By Ashntorsmom |

I was here for a wedding and was disappointed. You would think they would cut the grass and weed knowing being a place like this. There were weeds growing thru rose bushes, trash in grass and it just dodnt look as vibrant as pictures on website made it.

Fall is the best period

By Mat B |

A nice place to visit especially in fall. The trees are magnificent, coloured in red and yellow; the kids love it

Awesome Park

By samanthajfindlay |

This is a great park. There is so much to see. We did the swan boats, and it was so much fun! We walked around the gardens, and it was so peaceful.

Nice park in the city

By Matt C |

I won't lie I stopped by the memorial park to get my national park book stamped. It was a very nice park in the city with memorials and a small museum. I hadn't done my research beforehand and didn't realize there was much more to it than I saw. Still what I did see was worth a visit. The employees at the museum were very helpful and informative.

The museum is pretty small and has information about Roger Williams and his views religion and separation of church/state. Learned some new historical information on a relatively quick visit.

Beautiful Park In the Middle of Providence

By Peter K |

My wife used to come here when she was little. It hasn't changed much but it's pretty and a nice refreshing break from the city. We didn't have much time and it was late afternoon, but it was a pleasant place to spend an hour walking with my wife. We'll be back to explore it more.

Terrific Zoo in Providence RI

By Susan K |

There is a wide variety of animals in comfortable habitats. The park itself is lovely.

What a treat for all ages

By Sharleen172 |

A casual stroll by the animals, all the animal caretakers are helpful and willing to tell you about the animals. A good selection of beasts, birds and such.

Great for small children

By TeamSmallState |

The zoo is great and the animal exhibits are easily accessible. We have young children and what keeps us coming back is actually the play area. A great place for kids to explore. Sometimes we barely make it to the animal exhibits.

Pretty to walk through

By jaz79h |

Not all that much to see here--a pretty park, with a few monuments noting where historic artifacts used to be. All the same, nice to pass through if you're in the area.

Great for a small zoo, but go in the warm months!

By heatherchris99 |

We have visited the Roger Williams Zoo twice now. For its size it is a fairly good zoo. Our most recent trip was not as wonderful as our last. We went in October and many of the animals are not on display. We did not get to see the elephants, which is one of my son's favorites and several other animals were not on display. The marsh area is pointless in October. We did not see any alligators either. Also, due to the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular there were several roped off areas that were off limits. Also a lot of the kiosks were closed that normally sold concessions.
I would recommend visiting the zoo in the warmer months, so that you can experience everything and save the colder visits for the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular.

By Lori F |

One of the best zoos in the area. It is easy to get to & has plenty of parking. There is also a nice variety of animals there.

Huge, beautiful park

By dustythoughts |

There's a lot to do in this park: walking, a carousel, botanical gardens, swan boats. You could spend all day in this park and not be bored. There are signs directing you to various activities within the park, which is helpful. My boyfriend and I went on the swan boats, which were great, although you couldn't drop off the boat at either end of the lake - you need to return it to the station where you rented it.

WARNING! Lock up your stuff!

By bweikie |

I've been to the Zoo several times but recently went to the park for a walk while my daughter was visiting the park planetarium with a friend. Within 10 minutes of walking, my driver's side window was smashed and belongings stolen. I was notified by museum staff and an officer met me at my car. 2pm in the afternoon and there was a witness who gave the plate number of the car to the officer, but it did not match the description of the car. I was told by the cop that "That's what they "thieves" do as they scope out the park. Apparently it happens often. Yes, stupid of me to think that hiding stuff under my seat would be enough of a deterent but I was most put off by the fact that this seems like "just another day' in the park for the very sympathetic officer. Just be careful.

large, clean area

By grnman82 |

We visited the Botanical Center in the park and it was a nice, affordable touch. We intend on going back when everything outside the green houses are in full bloom. The park itself is nice and lengthy as well as guarded. There are some shady people here and there but police were frequent visitors of the park and it was, for the most part, very clean.

Wonderful

By Megan M |

I enjoyed this park. It was very clean and there was a lot to do. Went to the museum and it was very interesting then went to the zoo after that and loved that. If you're ever around the area I recommend visiting!

Wonderful park

By Jenn M |

Excellent zoo, swan boats, carousel, excellent small victorian era museum with a planetarium, botanical center has wonderful events. For a city park, it leaves Boston in the shadows.

Beautiful park

By Emmy2005 |

Such a wonderfully place to walk and explore. The park was originally meant to house the zoo and you can see where some of the old exhibits were. Beautiful paths to walk, well maintained. We were there in the summer and there was plenty of shape and things to see. From the beautiful flowers, to the fountains and benches. Go take a walk and enjoy.

Great park with lots to offer.

By Maria S |

I like the variety of activites there are at RWP. The zoo, the carousel and children's park as well as the The bontanical center are but a few of the many great things going on at the park. There is also the Museum which is interesting and affordable.

Full of History

By valdezjuan929 |

Roger Williams Park, is one of the best parks ever I have visited, ( I just live to blocks away) Nice family place and a zoo for the kids

its just a small little park.

By Alex D |

I thought this was the zoo but it wasn't. I did find the Zoo later which is name the same thing but after walking the whole city. So if you are looking for the Zoo its called Roger Willams ZOO Not Park

Beautiful!!!

By KisssableKate |

Such a lovely arboretum. Spent a couple hours here enjoying the lush foliage, breathtaking flowers and peaceful fountains. The greenhouse had a koi pond and contained a wide variety of plants and flowers. We enjoyed a walk by the lake and caught a glimpse of several magical monarchs! Truly a delightful way to spend an afternoon relaxing with nature.

Beautiful City Park, Spend the Day

By ymceight |

We spent a few hours in the park but should have planned to spend the day. We toured the Casino, marveling especially at the upstairs ballroom and the back view to the pavilion located riverside.

We paid $2 each for admission to the park museum. An amazing collection of birds was my favorite but the bigger quadrupeds were impressive as well. Loved the various collections from Africa and the islands off the coast of Australia. The building itself was worth admiring from the outside, even if you don't want to go in.

We missed the Zoo, drove by the newly blooming Botanical Gardens, and cruised the various park roads to enjoy the serene environment, but that's all we had time for today.

Saw families picnicking, joggers, cyclists, walkers and strollers. Seems like there's plenty to keep one active, regardless of age and fitness. No charge to enter the park.

Could be nice, but . . .

By Nmcleveland |

We visited to walk around and look the gardens/pond. The park was unkempt and dirty. What was especially disappointing was it looked like it was a beautiful place that Providence has just let go.

Bike, walk or just hang out!

By alor50 |

Love this park; it is a beautiful park with gorgeous walking and bike riding paths. You can watch the children play, stop at the zoo or just walk or bike ride around the park. On a beautiful day, it is the place to go!

Beautiful and Historic Park

By Will M |

I performed a wedding at the Botanic Gardens within Roger Williams Park yesterday, and had occasion to spend some time checking out the Park before the time for the Ceremony. What a treat! Most of the Park was a bequest of Betsey Williams, descendant of Roger Williams. The Park includes many sights, including the cottage where Betsey lived as well as the family grave yard, dating to the time of Roger Williams and his children. Pretty amazing and a real joy for an amateur historian.

Botanical Center -tropical oasis in the city

By Vanessa V |

I love coming to the Botanical Center to immerse myself in a warm tropical environment surrounded by GREEN! As a plant nerd, my favorite area is the carnivorous bog, the edible forest garden and community garden and the outdoor gardens which bloom all spring through summer. My niece loves to run around indoors during the winter and look for the fish in the ponds. Events like Fairy Garden Days, art exhibits, family retreats and gardening workshops from URI Outreach Center bring life and community to this great hidden gem!

Treasure in the middle of the city - acres and acres

By jroihl |

This property was originally owned by the Massasoit Indian Nation. Rodger Williams had such a good and fair relationship with them that they insisted on giving him the land. It remained in his family until the death of the last member who willed the property to the city. It has an amazing array of activities for all ages and interests. One could easily spend a day here

If you found this review helpful please note below and consider adding this reminder to your own reviews. I appreciate being reminded.

A really beautiful city park

By Eyvonne K |

I've been to this park at least 15 times; it has some wonderful attractions. We use to take the children there on Saturdays for tennis lessons on their clay tennis courts. We have also taken them to the zoo and playgroups as well as the lovely carousel. There are nice areas to walk, sit or run and the place is expansive...larger than you expect when you first enter the park. In fact it is easy to get lost trying to locate the right exit when you are ready to leave. A great place to spend all or part of a day.

beautiful all 4 seasons

By flehrer |

Roger Williams Park is a gem. The park has acres and acres of beautiful gentle rolling hills. It is fun to go sledding in the winter. Roger Williams Park Zoo is open year round. My favorite animals there are the elephants and the giraffes. Check out their website to see all that the park offers.

A place to relax in Providence

By Jegan |

Almost in the mid of providence, this sprawling park offers some solace from the busy providence city life.

I goto the park to play tennis at the SPOT tennis academy and I cant help but wonder how beautiful this whole place is.

Temple of Music, Zoo, boat rides in the lake, the carousel for the kids.. this place has a lot to offer to every kind of person

Beautiful fall colour

By qofdnz |

Did the 5km (3 mile) walk around the main lakes area on a blustery Sunday. A slow stroll taking photos took under 2 hours. Beautiful foliage and interesting sculpture dotted around. The museum is an interesting building and contains quite a few stuffed birds but lacks much content. Cheap entry though, kids will like it. Toilets there. Porta loos also at the temple to music. Went for a ride on the carousel and took a photo with Mr Potatohead. Well worth a visit on a trip to Providence. Didn't see it all really needed another couple hours.

Halloween exhibit

By AvidTourist |

I've been to the Halloween Pumpkin Event twice - a few years apart. I was not disappointed. It's amazing that volunteers carve all those pumpkins. The folks who do the displays have a very creative mind!

Nice place to walk around

By John E |

My wife and I drove here from our hotel in Warwick. The park was not too difficult to find but it was more difficult to find our way around within the park. Once we finally found a place to park, we did enjoy walking around. We were sad to see so much garbage floating around the Japanese garden.

Holiday in the Park

By Sally S |

The first Saturday in December, Master Gardeners hold a community event at the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center. Coming into the greenhouse feels so delightful. The place is decorated with a botanical holiday display. Food, music, botanical demonstrations, children's crafts and the most fabulous wreaths for sale all for the price of a canned good.

A wonderful respite from the hectic Holiday frenzy.

Nice park

By gcd075 |

Roger Williams Park is a great time for the kids. The park itself is very clean and well kept. There are more and more events and things to do every year.

Phenomenal Park right outside the city

By Heather B |

This place is gorgeous year-round. Being right near the zoo is very convenient. There are tons of activities, you can spend the whole day there while spending very little money.

An Empty Park

By thesuitcaserdiaries |

Thought this would be more interesting as it is a state park but the monument that was in the park is no longer there, just a park with a gift shop that was closed.

excellent views

By DNWA |

This little park is on a hill and overlooks the city, giving great perspective to the area below. The street running along the edge is filled with beautiful Victorian homes. I think it would make a great place for a picnic on a warm, sunny day, in the middle of the busy city.

Roger Williams Park Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular

By Davedog14 |

This is an extremely Fun tour to see. Bring family and friends for this amazing fall tradition: over 5,000 illuminated jack-o-lanterns along a beautiful Wetlands Trail,Numerous pumpkins carved into works of art. The Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular
is open rain or shine.
Recommend going mid week if possible to avoid crowds.

A total gem in the middle of the city.

By Cathy M |

Roger Williams Park is a glorious place to visit, with so much to do! There's an excellent zoo, botanical gardens, a gorgeous rose garden, walking paths, a carousel, and so much more. If you live anywhere near Providence RI, I highly recommend that you check it out!

Super place to wear the kids out...Always a nap on the way home

By Sparky9109 |

RWP was the best, it's still good. The Park is outstanding but some of the grounds need work or are are under construction. The carousel is superb, old wooden horses, gayly painted animals and benches for adults. The kids play area is great swings, teeter totters, jungle gyms. They have boats for the lake, open areas for a picnic, and roads for walking. The Park could be world class with a little work, and they are trying but money is tight still It's worth the visit, the kids will enjoy the zoo. Plan on 2-3 hours, there is nothing worse than an over-tired kid.

a nice place when the weather is good to spend time

By Barry N |

This park is enormous and well-maintained. It includes a toddler playground, a beautiful carousel, an arboreatum/greenhouses, Japanese garden, many walking paths with interesting buildings and sculptures and a pretty lake. There is a lot of parking. Everyone from small children to seniors will find something to enjoy here. There is something new to see on every visit.

walk in the park

By alexandria d |

its a pretty awesome park due to its hiking trails, and different sightseeing they have available...you can also enjoy the Zoo or even the duck boats they have in their pond...they have festivals there every summer and picnic areas to lounge with family and friends.

Nice park

By Susan E |

Went with my kids, very nice, plenty of bathrooms. Prices for food were reasonable, parking availability was great, right in and right out!

Lots to do!

By Joe H |

Great scenes and lots to do and picnics and friends and youngsters will love it! So many exhibits also! Wow you have to spend all day to get through it all!

Beautiful but sad

By Nd0627mom |

The statues and buildings were beautiful, but there was litter everywhere. My 11 year son and I walked the park near the casino, and Roger Williams statue. We could see the grandeur the park had. We seen a pair of beautiful swans in the river. The statues were very well done and we learned a few things. However, we couldn't believe the amount of garbage all over the ground, even on the steps of the states founder... It was really sad to see how poorly the park was taken care of. There weren't even any garbage cans. It was like people came with food and just left all there garbage were it fell.

Great Family zoo

By 4okay |

Great place to spend the day with the kids. The zoo does a great job with its animals--great care provided. The zoo is the right size, not too big or small, and not too difficult to push a stroller. Food is not too expensive either.

Have a picnic with your friends here

By noexpectationsmotto |

Great place to walk your dog, jog, walk and bike through. I would love to see a farmers market here one day, with a little more activities. Or even a volleyball, badminton, ets set up. It doesn't have the same feel as Boston Common or Central Park, not even close to it, but in the city this is a good place to escape to for some quiet. Lots of cars do zip through here as it connects to other areas and neighborhoods so do be careful when walking on the roads.

By Archie |

we enjoyed swan boats and saw so many great birds along the way. we luved the carousel and my son chose blue dragon. he enjoyed playing in the park and beautiful blossoms in japanese gardens. we took so many pictures and luved the experience. we enjoyed pizza, hot dogs and fresh ice cream. what a nice park to have in the city!

Great place for kids & adults

By Amy A |

I've grown up going to Roger Williams Park Zoo, I have many memories as a child there and now my husband and I take our daughter (18 months). We have gone to RWPZ with our daughter a couple of times and I felt like it was only alright, especially since they let go of the polar bears (my fav always) and also because we go to many different zoos that are a lot larger and nicer (also alot further) but only recently since they've added the HASBROchildrens tree house and play area i think its GREAT! My daughter had a blast in the sprinklers, tents and block areas and didnt want to leave..even to see the animals. I would go back more often just for this Its very cute, they did a great job! i also noticed they added a few more new exibits with more planned for next year, so within a years time they've done alot of great things. Food, as with mosts parks are over priced and not good quality...but i think most people expect that. They have a very nice and pretty big gift shop, but again... over priced.

Also a favorite is the pumpkin spectacular on october nights. Maybe a bit pricey for what it is to some people, but we love it! They have amazing work, carved pumpkins of celebrities, animals, famous buildings and usually they do a theme every year (last year was mother goose) . Its not all just carved pumpkins on a table, they decorate it very nice with pumpkins in the ttrees, on the water, fog machines and music. It just puts you in the halloween spirtit which has always been my favorite time of the year! Your deffiently better off going during the week...weekends youll end up spending about 2 hours+ just in line..we brought our daughter last year but she got very cranky waiting in line so we left and the following week me and hubby went just the two of us. After experiencing it again (we hadn't been in years) we were kind of glad we didn't bring our daughter just bc it's pitch black in there & for people with strollers they were bumping into people constantly, along with young children..we must have walked into about 12 kids bc you just cant see them, so parents tether your child to you..esp on weekends! I think its more work & fustration for the parents esp kids under 4..however, other parents we met said they had gone on the weekdays and there wasnt many people at all..so if possible plan a weekday if you have young children! Other than that it was very cute! We rode the swan boats afterwards (they have them year round) with light up arches & pumpkins at night. The owner and his little boy were very nice, gave us blankets to snuggle with in the boats and sold hot chocolate and hot apple cider outside the rentals. I remeber going on the swan boats in the summer as a child during the day too so either way..romantic or with children its very cute!

The park (seprate from the zoo) is nice, very big and has a carrosell and lots of other things to do. RWP is a great place if your visiting the area or even if you live here and have never been deff a good place to spend the day!

Treasured space that has seen better days

This large urban park provides much appreciated green space in Providence. Many possibilities for walking, running, cycling. But sections of the park need better upkeep and repairs. Still worth a visit for some time outside or to go to the zoo.

A little less than the buildup we heard

Providence is chock full of parks. All beautiful. Some large, some small, some famous, like this one; some obscure. All offer a pretty walk on a gorgeous day.

HUGE fantastic park

lots of hiking trails, SWAN BOATS!!!, carousel, zoo, music venue.....did I mention LOTS of hiking trails. Great place to relax or exercise.

Beautiful in every season

Roger Williams Park is one of the most beautiful tranquil settings within Providence. In the summer you can rent peddle boats and have a leisurely paddle on the pond, bring a picnic lunch and visit the zoo too!

Rainy Day at the Park

By Elaine C |

Roger Williams Park is glorious. Go during April when the tree blossoms are a-popping! The Japanese garden is spectacular at this time of year as well. On a quiet rainy Saturday, my husband and I had the area pretty much to ourselves--oh, and the nesting swans in Willow Lake were also there--the flickers were also out and not skittish by an means. Even if you aren't about to ride the indoor carousel, it is worth taking a look at it--a beautiful work of art. Take a lunch and picnic here on a warm sunny day-- wish we could have, but still the rain was not a problem.

Pretty walk

Nice place to walk/ run/ play tennis and get out of the city a bit. Good place to bring kids for a picnic or just to get outside and play around. It's too bad that Providence does not have more green space like this!

A Spring Oasis

The park was bigger than I realized, which was good. Lots of places to get out and relax. Plenty of parking. Beautiful flowers and trees in bloom. The Japanese Gardens with the bridges was my favorite area. It was very relaxing. I enjoyed watching the geese and other wild birds wander and fly about. This is also a good place to go for a walk or run.

A large park within city limits

By HPLowry |

It is a large and well manicured park within the city limits (just barely...one side just barely touches Cranston).

There are seven lakes, 6 of which are man-made. It is a Frederick Law Olmsted creation, meaning it was carefully crafted. There are lots of little nooks and crannies. We drove though the park, which I am sure diminished the experience a little bit. IT cries out to be walked.

There are various classical structures (think Greek architecture) which operate as concert venues.

We went to the planetarium, which was quite small, but intimate and nice. The quality of the programming as first rate. The planetarium is housed in a small natural history museum.

There was good ice cream and sherbet by the carousel (although the flavor selection was a limited to roughly a half dozen flavors).

There were small boats for hire that looked like swans.

Central Park of Providence

Huge, beautiful park with lots to see.
Take a leisurely drive through the park. Stop at the sights that interest you.

I stated by taking a stroll through a garden. There was a lovely pergola, benches, and flowers.

A short distance away was a statue and a gopher having a snack.

We then drove to a cute historical home by a foot bridge and a stream.

Our last stop was the recreation hub of the park: the carousel, the swan boats, and the children's little train.

The Japanese gardens are by the carousel and food truck Friday was set up by the carousel.

Very nice gardens. Well worth the 3.00 admission charge

By edfc |

We visited the Roger Williams Botanical Gardens on October 19th 2013. The cost for admission is only 3.00 per person and while the gardens are small it is well worth the cost. Because our visit was late in the season much of the garden was becoming dormant for winter. We did visit the 2 green houses and they are very nice. The indoor fountain and the koi pond is nice to see. We spent about 45 minutes viewing the greenhouses and also the surrounding garden.

When we left the cashier in the house was on her person cell phone and when we were leaving we were able to hear conversation. Although there were only 4 people in the gardens she really should have been more discrete.

Fun for toddler and grad students

A natural jem just south of Providence! Beautiful place for a picnic or go see the zoo! With a surprising number of exhibits and animals, the Roger Williams Zoo is fun for my friends at Brown and young cousins. Everyone loves visiting here.

Probably one of the best parks in the country.

Beautifully covered by rolling lawns and trees, with a really fine zoo, throwback carousel and pedal boats for rent, this park also features wonderful bronze statuary of American heroes of our golden past, a Natural History museum, and other surprising little gems, such as Betsy Williams House (she was the sister of the famous Roger Williams, the founder of the colony and the foremost leader of religious freedom. There's a statue of him in a park in Geneva, Switzerland, the City of Refuge, so well-known is he. I'm often pleasantly surprised, when telling people I'm from Providence, that very many of them say "Oh, that's the city with that really great park".

Beautiful

This was a nice place, but if you don't like the outdoors, this isn't for you. I liked it, but there's only limited things to do for adults. We had to stop for a flock of geese crossing the road, so that was pretty exciting. Overall a nice place for enjoying the outdoors in the city.

Beautiful setting

Roger Williams Park is a beautiful gem right in the middle of the capital city. It has lakes with wild ducks, geese, swans and turtles, a carousel and handicapped accessible playground for kids, walking trails, and a greenhouse with beautiful plants where you can also attend workshops. There is so much to do there, including the Pumpkin Spectacular every fall and the zoo where you can see animals in a natural setting.

Greatly enjoyed the zoo, no time to enjoy the whole park

By NewYorkTraveler7 |

Our whole family enjoyed the zoo - it was very manageable, the animals were abundant and you could get very close to them. A fun, relaxing day.

Beautiful Park and Zoo

By Joyce K |

Lots to see and do. Great walking, biking, play grounds. The Zoo was especially fun and quite nice for a small zoo. Very manageable with the kids. We were lucky to go in November and find a sunny day (but cold). Made it not so crowded which was nice. All is well maintained and the animals were pretty active. Inside displays as well.

Natural History Museum

This review is for the Natural History Museum only. It is housed in a historical building. Diverse exhibits and good educational materials. In a bad weather day, it is perfect for anyone from young to old.

Always a surprise!

Whether you go to ride in a swan boat, walk among beautiful gardens, visit the zoo or hop a ride on the carousel, you can always find something interesting at the park. What a treasure for the people of Rhode Island.
Our Zoo Membership got the whole family including grandparents into acres of interest and fun. The elephants were bathed and scrubbed to the delight of the kids. The giraffs and wildebeasts were active and fun to watch. The water park area seemed to attract and hold dozens of playful, well-behaved children, the tree house, tunnel, swings, etc. can keep kids busy literally for hours. There is plenty of room--even on a busy Memorial Day.
Highly recommended.

Great, growing zoo

We have visited regularly for many years and it is nice to see the improvements that have been made. Great zoo that has elephants, giraffes, camels, etc.

decent regional Zoo

I presonally would have liked to see more staff interation with the animals. The Butterfly exhibit left me breathless. It is a must not miss if you go.

Beautiful Urban Park

By NYTravelerBD |

Roger Williams Park is a tranquil, pretty, and inviting park that makes for a lovely way to spend the day. While on vacation in Rhode Island, we took our 7 year old daughter to the zoo, then for a stroll in the nearby Japanese Garden, and rented an electric boat from the "swan boat" stand and had a relaxing ride on the pond.

My daughter enjoyed seeing swans and Canadian geese throughout the park, and we even spotted a muskrat while on our boat ride.

Although the Japanese Garden can use some better upkeep on the grass especially, we found the park overall to be quite pristine. This is a great way to spend a quiet day in Providence.
