Crystal clear

By jbaum64 |

Usually hit the river after a round of disc golf at the college or Kyle. Mainly been during the week and it is not crowded at all. Have not been there on any week-end.

Fun to relax but...

By masontx76 |

This was a great option for us during the hot blistering heat of the day. We floated from the Lion's Club at the park and it took us about an hour of drifting with the current to reach the shuttle pickup point at the falls. We were told by the girl at the Lion's Club that they do not recommend you go through the rapids in their tubes. I should have heeded the warnings and not gone through them at all. My two sons and I thought we'd give it a try after watching several other patrons go down them without encountering a problem. I guess it was a pride thing or maybe one of those "you only live once" thoughts that crossed our minds. My youngest boy went first (14) and flipped out of the tube and went under and popped up some 15 yards from the first fall with no tube in sight. Next came the oldest (17) with a worse result. He flipped over backwards (like all of us did) and slammed his head on the rocks below, lost his hat (which was later recovered) but somehow managed to hang on to his glasses. I was next feeling optimistic as a 41 year old veteran should feel right? RIGHT? Nope! flipped over backwards, sucked down to the bottom that felt like it was over ten feet (not sure what the depth was considering I was twisted around) and lost my $300 pair of Oakley's and my UA hat! I was madder than Hell! I was more relieved to have finally come up for some air! I called it quits after that as wee as my 14-year-old. The 17-year-old was determined to finish the ride and ended up on getting his leg cut up on the rocks at the bottom of the second chute. When it was all said and done we had lost a shirt, sunglasses, a hat, and a towel. So, $400 later, we were tired and ready to go. Before the falls, we had a good relaxing time. The water was cold but you got used to it within minutes. It felt great in the heat. Make sure you sunblock up and take a waterproof pouch for your phone. Beware the falls as they will take your glasses and hats and enter at your own risk (as the signs say)!

Love it! But very crowded in the summer.

By hd c |

Love it! But very crowded in the summer. The water is clear and cold. There is tube rentals, etc. But in the summer you can almost walk on the heads down the river it's so crowded.

Happy Memories

By Elaine H |

It was my third time in America but my first time in San Marcos. I was visiting family and they were keen for me to enjoy something special and different. Tubing..... I was so apprehensive as I am a poor swimmer so I read all the reviews which told of fun but did not allay my fears. However it was brilliant. There were loads of students who were having a great time. They were all so courteous towards our our family group and their youthful exuberance added to the atmosphere and our enjoyment. I got out of the river before the rapids but was delighted to watch my seven year old grandson braving them with his mother time and time again. We had hired our tubes from The Lions Club and were pleased to use their transport back to our car park. I hope it is an experience I can have again next year.

lovely

By rshield |

must tube it and enjoy the doing it again and again, The water is cold but you will enjoy the cool down.

lazy river

By Stephanie R |

I took my fiancé and my 13 year old daughter. I really enjoyed the float down river because I have back problems and it was perfect for me. There are no rapids and is just a relaxing lazy float if you tube between the Lions Club and Rio Vista River Dam which takes about an hour. There are some rapids if you go past the dam, but we didn’t go that far. The river was its typical 73 degrees which it is year round due to being a spring fed river. Since it is a spring fed River I’ve also never seen it empty unlike the Comal or Guadalupe rivers. If you are sensitive to the cold, make sure you get there early enough to make it through your float before the sun starts to go down you might start to get chilled like I did, however, we had a nice cool spring breeze that kicked up which helped to chill me. So if you’re just looking for something to do that is relaxing and you can take the whole family and your friends for real inexpensive this would be the place to go. You can rent tubes at the Lions club and they will shuttle you back from the end or you can take your own tubes. Either way I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Awesome time.

By CrystalDarling |

We went august 18th and had a blast it was cold but that didnt stop us from swimming. There were not many people at all. The water was clear.

Fun in the sun

By Susana L |

The San Marcos River is ALWAYS a great choice. We always road trip here on mini holidays or just for a weekend swim. The water fall is so much fun! Also, if you float down river, there are some trees with ropes that you can use to swing and jump into the river. It's always a blast!

San Marcos River San Marcos, TX

By freddombski |

Went here off to "feed the ducks" with the bread we were carrying for a couple days because we couldn't find any takers until here. My wife has an obsession with feeding the birds and ducks with bread leftovers. It was clean and not moldy so give it a rest. The 2 we found clamored over each other from about 100 feet away when we waved it at them from the bridge. The swam even upstream against the current which I would consider to be a couple knots. Anyway now to the river. It looked almost clear and there were many tubers, rafters and kayakers coming downstream. Seemed to be college kids and it looked very inviting. Probably fed by a San Marcos spring that would explain it's clarity

Splendid San Marvelous River...jump right in!

By bibaball |

It's so enjoyable, i wish i could tube everyday! Not a deep river. A couple of 'rapids' to ride or hop out and walk around them. Scenic. An array of places that rent tubes and van you back to your car. Residents tend to bring their own tubes. Birds. Turtles. Fish. Amazing aquatic plants...jump in the water is so FiINE!

Plan ahead

By megcb27 |

Use Don's (adult-oriented, 3 hours) or Lion's Club (family friends, 45 minute float). They supply the tubes (or air for your own tube) and a bus ride back to your car (or you have to walk FAR). Weekdays are always better. Invest in a water proof zipper pouch (they sell them at lions club) for your phone. It's totally water resistant and the touch screen still works.
Wear water proof shoes as they will be most definitely be submerged!

Absolutely beautiful and a joy to behold.

By Kay M |

Oh what a beauty! This clean, clear river flows happily through downtown San Marcos where the city fathers have made sure that it is accessible to anyone. The parks along the river took a beating in May during the Memorial Day floods, but have been cleaned up and is a joy to see. Don't miss it

Hey! Please don't come...leave it for us locals

By EW_Nocona |

OK. We love toobing or kyiaking down the San Marcos....from the gentle current down to the falls, until...well, THE FALLS...lost my beer, um, sunglasses...hat..and lots of other stuff every time I've gone down. What fun! Come if you want....please make it during the predictable tourist seasons so we'll avoid seeing you block up the river with all the other folks. Thanks!

Ps Keep an eye out for the GIANT snapping turtles that do live in the river...no danger, but they scare me every time I see them. hope I didn't scare you off ;)

Paradise

By amanilopes |

The San Marcos River is one of the most beautiful things about Texas. Such a fun summer activity to take friends and family to. Bring your cooler tube and fill up your cooler with as much beer as possible and have yourself the best time ever. The river is the perfect temperature for the Texas summer heat.

Great fun

By Billye P |

Had fun tubing, water cold at first but as the day got hotter we were happy. Would spend more time just enjoying the slow pace

Cool off

By Sherri L |

The best place to cool off in San Marcos. Rent a tube and spend the day floating at your leisure. The bottom of the run has great rapids to slide on, rope swings from the trees, and a park.

Cristaline, shallow, cool water

By Juliette902135 |

The river is great and the way the terrain has been smoothed out along the river is great. Great for relaxing by the side of the river or kayaking down the river. When I visited, the weather was cool but people still got in.

great fishing awesome swimming

By RICHARD P |

Doesn't get better than tubing n fishing the San Marcos river, but don't try it , there are only so many fish and they are already spoken for, there mine I tell ya, mine mine mine go go go mine mine mine

Great visit

By jesfire415 |

First of all it a great ways to spend a day or your vacations. We went to Rio Vista Park on the banks of the San Marcos Rivers and it a great place to visit. One can go tubing, dip your toes in the cool river, or sit in the shade and relax. This park has a swimming pool, a children's playground, lots of shade and free parking. Something of everyone!!

Beautiful

By 78jennifere |

We tubed down the beautiful San Marcos river. It was clear, cool and very relaxing. Not as much of a "party" river like the others in the area. Shorter trip and more families. The river is slower and the area is very well taken care of. Lots of turtles, ducks, and beautiful trees. Would definitely tube down again.

Me and my closest 2000+ closest friends

By justssalter |

So, I'm glad we did it, but I wouldn't do it again; especially on a summer Saturday afternoon. It was not relaxing. And the amount of weed and cigarettes being smoked was ridiculous. If you're prepared to be stuck for 4+ hours with who knows who doing who knows what, have fun. The water was fine and we didn't get burnt, so that was good.

Nice walk

By Zetkom |

Crystal clear water. Very nice area for small walk. Few picnic tables around so it's nice to have a lunch there.

Mesmerizing

By parkernomad |

The Beautiful river never fails to impress me. It is Crystal clear, free from trash or any type of junk. The maintenance of the river and parks for and by the residents is commendable. You can fish, swim, kayak, walk the trails or just sit and enjoy.

Be sure to check out the history and ecological wonders such as it being home to several endangered species, as well as being home of ancient people's as far back as 12,000 yrs. The Marcos river is definitely a major highlight and must see by visitors.

Nice toobing

By iraq08 |

Never have to worry about low water level. Spring feed fro Aquariena Springs. Great short float. Very clear water and tubes available for rent thur Lions Club. If you bring your own tube you can get free air at the HEB.

Great way to beat the Texas heat

By caldertx |

Beautiful crystal clear water at constant year-round temperature. Tube, float, swim or kayak. The river originates at Aquarena Springs in San Marcos and flows all the way to Gonzales. Along the way it is joined by the Balnco & Guadalupe rivers. You can spend a couple of hours or a couple of days, depending on your preference. Tubes can be rented at the Lion's Club park for a small fee which includes pick up and a shuttle ride back. If you have your own equipment, it's free to float or kayak but you are on your own getting back to where you parked. No glass or styrofoam containers allowed on the river, but canned beverages or coolers are welcome (just don't throw your cans in the river please). Be aware that tubes can & do flip over during the ride over the falls or rapids, so leave your expensive sungalsses at home. Recommend river shoes (not flip-flops) and a hat, especially if you are going to be on the river for several hours.

Amazing... Every town needs this!

By hellenkillerproject |

If I lived here I would be at this place all the time. It is a refreshing little spot right in a nice town. Cool flowing water and well kept. It was one of the highlights of the trip we took to the area. And it was the best value by far.

Nice Way to Cool Off

By Sharonfpower |

The water was nice and cool and pretty clear. We were near a small park that had free parking, and areas to have a cook out. There was limited grass to sit on near the river. I can't believe they allow drinking and tubing as a ton of cans end up everywhere. The water is low in some spots due to the drought. This is a nice place to spend a couple of hours.

Great way to spend a hot summer day with the family

By Jennifer B |

I'm a Native Texan yet somehow managed to go 40+ years without ever tubing down the river! We decided to spend a few days in the Austin area, and made a day out of tubing in San Marcos. It was 100 degrees, but the water was cold! It was great. We rented tubes from the Lions Club. For $10 per tube plus free shuttle you just can't beat it. We had our teenaged kids with us, and we all enjoyed it. Rather than renting a locker, we locked everything in our car, and I took just the key on a key ring and hooked it to my bathing suit. The little bag that hangs off the tube was roomy enough for flip flops and a water bottle. I would love to go again sometime!

Fun but Fast

By studara |

Our family of 4 floated the river on July 3rd. We had fun and enjoyed how amazingly clear the water was. I guess because of all the rain and the high water level it only took about 40 minutes or less to get to the end where the rapids were. Still a good time and lots and lots of people enjoying the holiday weekend. Next up is the Comel River I hope.

A River Run

By Mary B |

We took the dog. We had wonderful fun. It was a little crowded. The river is beautiful! It's nice for a dip, a picnic, or just to dangle your feet.

Cold, Clear, and Clean!

By Hank H |

The SM River is the centerpiece for San Marcos, and the beautiful Texas State University campus. Every sunny day, you can find 100s of students grabbing some rays, playing volleyball, frisbee, and jumping in the cold fresh currents. Rent an inner tube and float lazily along, or jump in, get wet, and lay out in the sun! It's the best summer beat the heat treat!

Beautiful River

By Deborah K |

We have always enjoyed seeing this beautiful river next to the Texas State campus. It is cold and clear, perfect for swimming, tubing and paddle boarding.

First time for family tubing

By klm47 |

Liked the clean river, coolness of temp., the amount of time (2 hrs.)
The ability to bring a cooler with for drinks and a snack.

Extremely delicious..

By uc k |

I really enjoyed every moment here, the meal was delicious and served by neat looking staffs and at a good rate.i wish to re-visit.

Beer cans everywhere

By Janice V |

I had heard that it was beautiful, but all I saw was trash and litter. People don't pick up after their dogs...or their kids. I'll be going to a different river next time.

Awesome but dangerous!

By Cathrine987654 |

Pls listen to the staff when they are warning you about the wallerfalls, especially if you are going with kids! My kids did well, but I got tipped over in the first waterfall and the strong surge of the water would not let me or the tube go after first bin spinning around as a ball under the water several times! This was a very scary experience, and luckily a man was standing on a rock nearby, he grabbed my arm and helped me out of the water. Than u so much!!! We did all get out of the water after this. Would still do tubing again, but without waterfalls!😊 Missing warning signs and staff members from the Lion club at the waterfall area!

Beautiful clear water!

By Ogletreez |

Always fun to canoe in this river even though it is cold. It can be busy at times in the summer, so we usually go in the Spring or Fall.

Help

By Gloria R |

High I’m about to take off and I would like to stay for Two nights close to the river any suggestions and is the river close to the San Marcos outlets??

So pretty

By GoodEatsFan1960 |

From the start at Spring Lake the water is crystal clear. As it runs through Sn Marcos it is just a great river with so many people enjoying it.

72 degrees YEAR ROUND

By fm032017 |

The river in San Marcos is crystal clear and a cool 72 degrees year round. The atmosphere is family friendly and super. Tube rentals available in the summer with pick-up service to bring you to the starting point. Wonderful place to spend the day.

Scenic River

By Joe H |

Scenic River and perfect for family gatherings, cookouts and rafting. A treasure for the city of San Marcos.

Good, cool, clean fun

By THEPOW |

Cool , clear spring water greets the tuber as she enters the river. Let the current take you down at a slow walking speed. Bring a cooler for the beer or water...it gets its own tube, of course! Lots of people watching along the way. At the end, hot bus ride back to your starting point but well worth the time spent.

The water falls were fun!

By Marie M |

Slow pace river. In certain areas the motion stops so you will need to do some paddling. We loved the final three water falls. I would do that over and over again.

spend an afternoon

By Dave B |

a nice place to spend a few hours. Walk around, swim, float, tub, people watch. Doesn't matter. Also a top notch playground for the kids.

San Marcos Floats

By Stephanie H |

The park inside the city provides an exceptional river float experience. The foresight to ban alcohol improves the family appeal. Plus, located next to the river is a city park. I cannot say enough good things about CoSM for their inclusive park. Wheelchair swing, body sized seats and a super soft, cushioned play areas make this park. Shade trees provide abundant cover. And the cool down area is brilliant.

Beautiful but be careful

By Sylvia Z |

It's a nice place to hang out for the day. We took a cooler and had a picnic. The water was very strong this weekend. My daughter is a very good swimmer but she needed help. Make sure to keep your eyes on your little ones and there is water snakes. So prepare the little ones. Take plenty of towels.

Great for some outdoor fun

By Toni E |

The river is beautiful and clear. The water is pretty cool, so it's best to visit in the summer. You can relax and float the river in a tube, explore in a kayak, or just swim at leisure.

Nice

By ycervantez90 |

Nice river with rapids it was a bit fast moving mainly great for more experienced swimmers at this time

Don't go anywhere else

By Aggiebobcat |

I was a grad student at Texas State and floated down the river many times. I really suggest the San Marcos river over anywhere else because it is more family friendly then N.B. (less drinking and inappropriate and "rowdy" activities.) If you can come when college is out for summer I suggest renting a tube from the Lions Club and then walking around the fence onto the Sewell Park section of the campus to enter the river. This will put you in the river closer to the Aquarena Springs bridge and allow a nice peaceful area to avoid the crowds that collect on the steps. Also you can return your tubes with the trailers and simply walk back, being sure to cross over the river at the foot bridge. Also bring a short rope with you as this will allow you to tie your flip flops to your tube and/or tie together with others in your group.

Crowded, smelly, and garbage

By Beautybyandi |

Besides the water being freezing, there was tons of grass/moss, and it smelled like a stinky zoo! Tons of people and dogs. Lots of garbage floating in the water and lining the sides of the river. Please wear water shoes as I did find broken glass on the rocks that people were walking on. Was there less than an hour and saw 2 girls crying from almost drowning after flipping over in the rapids. People need to be careful when going to this river! Also, dont wear any valuables as you WILL lose them!!

Great Place on a night walk

By Harold L S |

From the parking lot along the river it is a short half mile walk to downtown where we saw unicyclists, restaurants, and a very colorful Texas town

San Marcos natural treasure

By perezrobert57 |

I was born here in San Marcos tx. I learned how to swin in these waters that people don't realize are cold due to the aguafer that brings this magical wonder from under ground and springs forward to provide life for countless of generations.

DTF (Down to Float)

By Rigo H |

If you are anything like me and don't know how to swim, don't worry, you can still have a lot of fun floating too! The water is crystal clear and at a very enjoyable temperature for the summer. Definitely a place to come and float with friends and drink some brewskis.

WHOOO

By Colleen W |

LOVE this place. Always the center of activity in this town during summer. It doesn't matter where you are on it.

A Cool, Relaxing Float

By M0lly121 |

I took my young teen/ tween daughters here the last week in June and we really enjoyed it. We went on a Wednesday around 11:00am and it wasn't too busy, but by the time we left around 3:00, it had really picked up. I recommend getting there at 10:00 for families to beat the crowd. Other than a slightly creepy guy that seemed to be by himself and watching everyone, it was a lot of fun. The Lion's Club specifically told us not to take their tubes on the waterfalls, as the river was up and it was too dangerous. We saw a few people doing it anyway.

The water is very clear, as far as rivers go, and felt great. We saw turtles, a heron, and some ducks. My daughter found a good sized snail shell on the bottom of the river in the swimming area near the Lion's Club.

We went to a very crowded Schlitterbahn the next day, and the kids said they had more fun floating the river! Who knew?

San Marco Springs

By linda p |

Took a small glass bottomed boat trip out costing $12 which lasted about half an hour. Really beautiful clear springs, very clear water, so you can see the fish, turtles flowers and natural bubbling springs at the bottom of the river bed.
Well worth the money and the young man talking was very knowledgeable.
Highly recommended.

Good and Bad

By Montecore |

This is/was our favorite place to float the river but when we went over the Memorial day Weekend the entire place was over ran by rude ghetto people. When I say over ran I mean OVER RAN! Hundreds of these type people...maybe thousands. There could not have been more...they were packed in like sardines. loud, cussing foul language (all in Spanish) a mess everywhere. It was very disappointing to say the least. maybe it was just because of the holiday weekend or maybe because the are no entry fees or parking fees.
I will say that The Lions Club rocks and because of them its the only reason there aren't two stars displayed. More on them in their review.

Bring beauty to your eyes.

By 263kenj |

A wonderful site for the whole family to visit and relax. The water is always flowing, the beauty never goes away.
It is a safe place for all to visit, and they have San Marcos park police working the area all the time for your
safety. Their is nothing to afraid of, they are like hanging at the water also.

Rio vista park San Marcos river

By DarkLark15 |

Pros: water is clean, clear, relaxed current. Lush scenery. Shaded. Crushed granite accessible trails. Shaded basketball court. Picnic tables. Several clean restrooms along the trail. Lots of Pokémon, poke stops, playgrounds along the trail. Shallow and deep water for swimmers. A low concrete bridge to exit before the falls. Parking. Free. Cheap tube rental nearby. In the city. Easy walk from park to Sewell park lions club tube rental. Dog friendly. Cons: lack of grills, swift current at falls that is dangerous to kids and weak swimmers. Bring a life jacket. Narrow, busted side walks near the river that are inaccessible for wheelchairs. Slippery Steps without handrails. No ramped area. Very crowded on weekends

Friday Night safe bet

By Steve and Sue A... F |

Food is generally good however expect the service to be slow , so if you want a leasurely meal then it is ok. You won’t be disappointed.

Great place!!!

By Janeth H |

Went there for a family weekend getaway, if you want to get a picnic table close to the river you should arrive before 10am we got there @10:30 and the picnic table we got was bit far. The water on the river was cold but once you get used to it's fine, we went for swimming since my kids for me are not old enough for tubing...saw a lot of people flip over even adults so that's to scary for me... there's a pool on the park which we went to since after 2pm is started to get crowded, loved the place though we had so much fun we would definitely go back....

Great job

By Andrew G |

I remember coming here as a kid and you had to watch out for glass and trash everywhere, you wore shoes in the water cause there was broken glass in the water wow what a great change so clean and beautiful.

Crystal clear River pours forth from the earth.

By ga-sweet-tea |

Quiet University town(Texas. State)boasts gorgeous clear River flowing serenely right thru town and Campus with easy public access @ Lions Club Park, Sewell Park and others for swimming, tubing ,sunning and hiking. A hidden jewel!

Lion's Club River Tubing

By Stefano B |

Good time. Floated down twice. Would have done more trips, but was very crowded and had to wait a long time for shuttle back to the beginning the second time (finally had room on third shuttle bus). The wait was entirely due to it being a summer weekend and there being a lot of people. The first trip down right after they opened at 10 was good. Got out of the river and stepped right onto the bus. This odd our second trip. Will do it again. Great time!

River Tubing

By kelly d |

Great fun if you like having a good time listening to music and dancing and generally having a good time. This river is frequently used by college age students especially on the holidays and we love watching the antics of the young people - enjoying life.

72 degrees year-round!

By Chingadero |

Nothing feels better on a hot Texas summer day than jumping into the crystal clear 72 degree San Marcos River...especailly after a night on the town in San Marcos!

A couple hours of relation.

By Carol R |

Leisure times floating slowing down the river. Inner tube for you, and one for the food and drink. Great for suntans on nice days. Love it!

Safe tubing for all

By ArtteacherSanMarcosT |

San Marcos City Council has allocated funds for entrance and egress throughout the river's winding trail. They even put in a chute for a wild ride at the end. It can get crowded on the weekends and holidays but the crowd doesn't get rowdy since it only takes a couple of hours to ride and that's not enough time to get drunk.

There are park police available to keep the peace in picnic areas. During the summer the city police who normally patrol the campus here are now at the parking areas to deter all scumbags. I live here and feel safe year round.

Lazy River Float

By Josh12_12 |

We floated down San Marcos River on a weekday and had a blast! River was much less crowded than on weekend and we used Lyons shuttle service to take multiple runs. The river is crystal clear and refreshing for that summer time float. River is calm enough to bring cooler and music on float. It was a great time!!

We loved it

By Rosy P |

What can I say the river was so awesome , water was freezing even though it was hot . They have a place where you can rent tubes, or buy snacks. Definitely going there again.

Free!

By MitchMicahandKaykay |

I couldn't believe how clear and clean the water is in this urban setting. The water was freezing but the temps were around 90's anyway so after dipping in the water, get out and dry off on the sunny riverbank and splash in again. Virtually no one when we were there on Columbus day but I can see how it can get crowded. Rent a tube or bring your own floater, a big blanket, food and you are all set.

Family Graduation

By Banananan |

We watched as TEXAS STATE graduates did the traditional jump in the Sam Marcos River! Beautiful campus! Bus transportation to & from Strahan Auitorium from parking area.

Best st Night

By Ranee T |

Highly recommend seeing the river under the stars in a kayak. This was my first trip down the river and was absolutely amazed at the beauty seen at night; an amazing perspective. Enjoy!!

Floated

By Amanda B |

A wonderful float with lion club. It was short but still the parks were amazing. Rio Vista was amazing.

Floatin!

By Allison S |

Definitely recommend floating with the Lions Club! For $10 you get a tube for the day and free shuttle rides back to the top! And semi-cleanish restrooms. I've been with college friends and family- both ways were a lot of fun! Bring a water proof camera (I used a GoPro, so much fun) if you want photos, bringing a phone isn't a great idea!

Tubing & Rapids

By Parrish G |

End of June rented a Lions Club Tube downtown San Marcos near Texas State University. Opens at 10 a.m. Cost is $10 tube/$20 deposit with or without bottom. Walked straight into the river. Water is cool/cold and was moving perfect. It takes about 45 minutes from this spot to where you get out at the big rock right before the rapids. The shuttle picks you up, give them your tube, you get a "poker chip", and they take you back to the beginning. Turn in chip, new tube, repeat all day. We had alot of fun!

WARNING:
IF, you choose to take the rapids, after the spot where you are supposed to get out, I CAUTION you the water is swift and the current is strong. You will probably get banged up or cut and possibly lose your tube. It was a bit of a struggle and overwhelming to reach the landing. I won't do the rapids again. Absolutely NO children!

Floating the river

By Audrey T |

We love going to float the San Marcos and Guadalupe River almost every year. The water is always like 70 degrees and so relaxing

Awesome river

By Julio V |

It was really cool mini vacation trip. I'm just 2.5 hours from San marcos . My first time being here and this is a kids friendly place . Its Just that the water is too cold even the weather was around 95 degree, the water still was very cold. But after all awesome experience. We did the tubing too , I took my 4,7 and 9 yearls old boys tubing , they enjoyed it. Very relaxing. Lots of fun.

Fun!

By outoftown17 |

Everytime that I visit one of my friends that lives in San Marcos, I come here. It is highly recommended from me, it is a complete blast.

Clean, Beautiful River

By yvettecos |

The San Marcos River is beautiful, clean river. We have brought over 20 family and friends to float the river. My husband and out Britt kayak the river almost year round. The river flow is constant and cool on a hot summer day. Can hardly wait for it to warm up.

favorite thing to do in town

By Liz_444555 |

This river is the reason that San Marcos is the longest continually-inhabited site in all of North America; people have lived here for 12,000 years! There's nothing better to do in the summer than go for a leisurely float down this gorgeous river.

Great Day for Tubing

By einzweidrei |

We went on a day when the weather was perfect. We got there early so that we could avoid any mobs of people. The shuttle goes back and forth pretty regularly.

The water is nice and there are a lot of places to stop when you just want to hop out and cool down by getting in the water. Plenty of opportunities for stopping in the shade as well.

Relaxing summer afternoon

By rogbrunell |

We went tubing with another couple and had a wonderful, relaxing time. We brought our own tubes, which required having vehicles parked at the beginning and end of the route. Rental tubes were available with transportation back to the starting point. Judging from the number of people on a Friday afternoon, I would be concerned about the possibility of overcrowding on weekends.

Fun despite the rain drizzle

By mrbrentharris |

This is truly a lazy river. We rented our tubes from the Lions club. The staff was really nice. Get here early before the crowds. The dam is a lot of fun.

Beautiful, crystal clear, chilly water . . .

By Susan S |

This river has amazed me since I was just a toddler. We took our yearly summer vacation in the New Braunfels/San Marcos area. Dad would drive us all around the river road and we would stop at each crossing, wade in the water, and skip rocks.

Now I shoot photos with my camera and stick my toes in the cool, crystal clear water and remember the memories of the past.

It is such a fantastic place for families to enjoy Texas nature.

Floatin San Marcos

By nancyw728 |

Be sure to go to Texas State Tubes. Nice float. Water always chilly refreshing. Not always kid friendly on a college campus holiday.

Fun tubing

By caitlyn m |

Great to go tubing down the river . It's beautiful and refreshing. Make sure to pack sunscreens And food as depending on the river level could be a few hours. Packed during the weekends in the summer. Can be noisy as people bring stereos. A lot of people drink and smoke so make sure I
You are ok with that if you chose to go in the summer. There are more quiet rivers with a less rowdy crew.

amazing river

Texas Treasure

San Marcos is one of the most interesting rivers you could experience in an urban area with it’s cool, clear spring water, beautiful vegetation and incredible wildlife. This river is conveniently accessed by several public parks and a lot of investment has been made to preserve the natural characteristics.

River floating San Marcos is calm and peaceful.

By Kimberly T |

The river has many access points that you can easily put in and take out your tubes. The water is clear, clean and a steady 68 degrees year round. Extremely pleasurable to spend time on the San Marcos river.

Spring Lake and The Meadows Center

Formerly known as Aquarena Springs, they have a fantastic nature center and Glass Bottom Boat Tour. We saw scuba divers working in the lake.

Fun

By Liz K |

We have floated the river many times over the years. The previous few years the river was low and slow. Very relaxing! This year after all of the rain in May we were worried that the river wouldn't be open for business. The part of the river in town was cleaned up and ready to go. Was much faster float this year but just as fun as always!!!

Fun Day

By Mary J |

We enjoy renting tubes from the Lions Club. The tubes are large and perfect for floating down the river. You can get tubes with or without a bottom, in case you want to bring an ice chest, dog, etc. Once you get to the stopping point, the Lions Club has a shuttle bus that will take you back to the start so you can go again. The water is cool and clear, with a pretty good current. It takes about 30-45 minutes to go down the river, but you can take much longer if you stop along the way. This is a great way to spend a hot, summer day.

4th of July

Great place! Fun for the whole family. Transportation if available for $5.00 all day. Rental tubes are also available.

411 on tube rentals

By Phillitravels |

Let me start by saying that we had a really fun time! We are from out of state and were traveling through the area and this was our first time. We went on a Thursday in June and the river wasn't extremely busy to us. The banks of the river in certain parts were busy, especially the pull out point where the rapids are. With that said here are important things I would have wanted to know before we went the first time:
Tube rentals: Tubes with or without a bottom cost $12 to rent. This includes the shuttle to bring you back to the parking lot.
We had tubes without a bottom the first time and then with a bottom after that. Mainly because we didn't like the feel of the grass on our bottoms as we floated down the river. You need to leave a deposit of $20/tube in either cash or credit card that you get back when you are finished. You can go as many times as you want down the river.

The Shuttle: Either a van or bus will pick you up at the pull out point and drive you back to the parking lot. They come quite frequently and we never had to wait for one more than a few minutes. The workers take your tubes from you so that you don't have to carry it a long distance.

The River: It takes approximately 45 min to float down. (I'm sure it varies due to rain fall.). The water temp. is chilly at first, but you soon get used to it. It is also fairly deep. Most places you cannot touch the bottom. It is extremely calm until you get to the pull out where the rapids are. Just remember to stay to the left and you'll be fine.

The Rapids: The workers cautioned us about going down the rapids with our tubes because of potential damage. However, after watching several other tubers do it, we decided to try it and were glad we did. There are 3 separate and pretty small rapids that you can go down. A few people flipped out of their tubes, but most people stayed upright. Honestly, that was probably our favorite part of the tubing experience!

Personal items: You can rent a lockbox for $5 to store your car keys or any personal items that you don't want to take down the river.

Overall: We highly recommend this, but probably only on a weekday! It really was a lot of fun and a very relaxing way to spend a summer afternoon!

Great float with Lions Club

By txsingleexplorer |

Easy access, beautiful scenery....not as long a float as I like, but pleasant. Go during the week to avoid crowds!

Floating the river.

By M C |

The Loin's club does a great job of taking care of the river and the people who float it. Not crowded in the middle of week. Enjoyed the fact there were not a bunch of drunks on the river. Peaceful and relaxing. Where else can you spend $12 and enjoy the entire day. $6 for the tube and $6 for unlimited rides back to float They ask you to leave $20 deposit / person. Or leave your credit card. Make sure to take plenty of water to drink. Stay hydrated.

The hidden gem of the Texas Hill Country

By nurseallie |

Everyone wants to go to the Guadalupe, Brazos and/or Comal Rivers, however, the San Marcos River is better than all the rest. The mouth of the river is located in San Marcos on the grounds of Aquarena Springs and is controlled by Texas State University. This has been done, in large part, to study and help preserve the river.
What really sets the San Marcos apart is that it is spring-fed and the temperature is a consistent 72 degrees year round. In addition, because the river is spring-fed, the depth of the river hardly varies, even in times of drought, it will only go down a few inches, if that. So, you aren't ever in danger of dragging or carrying your canoe or kayak. It's a beautiful, clear river with occasional rapids.

Rio Vista Park danger

By Happy traveler |

Gorgeous, cool, pristine river but I almost drowned at the chutes in Rio Vista Park. The current grabbed me when I was without a tube and threw me underwater for what seemed like an eternity. I was exhausted and gasping for breath when I finally surfaced past the 2 chutes. No one saw me as I struggled back. Have talked to others who this happened to. Just wish they had lifeguards past the chutes.

Beautiful Day Floating in San Marcos

By Pamela G |

My sons and I floated the San Marcos river and really enjoyed ourselves. We wish we had bought an extra tube to float a cooler with drinks and sun screen, as I was dehydrated with just the one drink I brought with me. Just because you're in the water don't under estimate the need to stay hydrated and I'm not talking beer either! LOL!

This Is What Central Texas Is About!

By Dustin H |

This is a must do for anyone in central Texas in the Summer. Floating rivers is a Texas national pastime and this is my 3rd favorite place to float after the Comal and Guadalupe in New Braunfels. At only an hour float this is one of the faster floats but you have the option to float as many times as you want through the Lions Club tube rentals. This is fun with friends or even solo. I went solo and because you're in Texas everyone is your friend and I was welcomed into several groups on my way down. This is what being a Texan is all about!

beating the summer heat

By Josh J |

San Marcos is my favorite place to go on the water in tx. The rivers in this town are awesome for a good getaway. The water is ice cold and everyone is their for a good time. Floating the river is only one of the many things to do while their. Jacobs well is an awesome attraction right down the road in wimmberly a must see.

Cold water

By Lisa B |

Let me start by saying that my 10 year old had a fabulous time, I, however, have learned a few things that would make it much better. First, we got there early enough to park on the road at the end of the river by the water falls, so that was good. I would absolutely buy a tube with a back rest and buy some kind of paddle, that is experience talking! My back and arms were killing me by the end of the run, next time will be different! The Lions club will transport back to the top of the river but you have to pay for the day, well worth it!! Also, you have to PAY to inflate your tube if you bring your own, it's cheap, but still you may want to buy your own and keep it for future use. Everything will get wet, so make sure you have a way to keep your stuff safe. They say there are a lot of car keys at the bottom of the river, keep that in mind!!

Pretty setting with beautiful trees and clear water.

By Linda M B |

It is a beautiful river with large trees for shade. There are several parks on the river we enjoyed seeing. The river runs beside Texas State University which is a lovely campus.

Pristine

Had a great day on the clean, clear and always 72 degrees San Marcos River! I grew up 2 blocks from the river and spent practically every free day there. Yesterday brought back fantastic memories!

Great way to cool off!

By bradandloni |

The San Marcos River is so must fun for all ages. The water is so clear and refreshing. You don't even notice the hot summer temperatures when you are in the water. Grabbing a tube and floating down the San Marcos River is one of our favorite summer activities!

Relaxing tubing!

By Denycia H |

This was so fun to tube down with a group of friends. The water is a constant 72 degrees which is lovely. It's very slow moving so it's relaxing. There is a spot that the rapids get intense and it was a ton of fun to go down. We're from Colorado and tube down the poudre with some really gnarly rapids so this was a nice change of pace to tube down something that is chill and relaxing with just a little rapid near the end. Totally would have gone down that rapid a couple more times if we had the time.

Time to COOL off in the Tx heat!

By What Moms Think |

GO! Grab your friends, partners, kids and hop in for the chillest float session around. Pack a cooler in a float and rug it behind you, bring reef safe sunscreen to protect the water critters & a wide brimmed hat because you'll be in the water a few hrs!
Use tube rental places or fare on your own, either way is a guaranteed good time. If you go on your own, uses share ride service to get you back to your car!

Nice clean river

By ERL972 |

We stopped for a short visit and swim in the river. The parks offer free access to swimming areas along the river. We arrived on a Sunday morning and had no trouble finding parking; however, when we were leaving around noon the parking area were almost full.

Great people san marcos. Friendly. River gets packed but it happens when its now the fastest rising town in texas. All can say is its a must to go bbq have a few (adults ha) and if with family its nice for summer. Just advice that you book early before summer no matter where u go in san marcos tx.

Fun

By CAMOGIRL1974 |

We used Don's fish camp for tube rentals, it was fun but it was also very packed. We didn't do the waterfalls, I'm scared to death of the water but it wasn't bad at all to me, some spots to stop off and chill is wanted to and we did, took us bout 4 hrs. Also everyone was friendly with bumping into one another. Good trip. Just be sure bring ice chest, it's very hot and you get thirsty

We floated the Lions Club part of the San Marcos River. This is a quick 20-30 minutes float. My husband and kids had run on the Rio Vista Dam. They rode the falls over and over. We rode the shuttle back to the Lions Club.

This is the community gathering spot. From collegevstidenrs to families, it's great for everyone. Tubing, canoeing, snorkeling, swimming, relaxing, picnicking. This is a gem.

First Time to Float...Start Here

By TheRealPublius |

This was our first time to float down the river. The Lion's Club has this down to a science and the price is excellent. This float is great for first-timers, about 40 minutes long. The river is calm, and there is easy access into and out of the river. The bus/van used by the Lion's Club was pretty clean and the drivers were friendly. When we went, there were a TON of people there and everyone bumped into each other in the river, but that was okay. We all had a good time.

Pretty, winding river

By fudgemom |

Pretty winding river that traverses along the country back roads of Wimberley, Texas. My husband and I drover along there after visiting the adorable town of Wimberley, walking through cute shops and enjoying lunch. If you are looking for a nice drive, this is for you!

Not so fun.

By U&Me4Ever |

My friends and I thought river tubing was an exciting thing to do so we rented tubes on Lions International @ $10 / tube (with or without bottoms) + $20 deposit each (which you can take back of course after you return the tube). It was our first time to do such a thing and we rented life jackets too @ $ 5 each since we are not good swimmers at all. We saw a family who tied their tubes together so we did the same thing so we will always be together wherever the current takes us. It was kind of exciting in the beginning though the river was crowded (I guess it should be expected on a holiday weekend); but after a while, it was boring, the current was not strong enough to move us down the river so we have to kind of find a way to move ourselves and since there were many others tubing too, we constantly bump into other people's tubes and apologize many times to people. The river wasn't clean and the water is not cold; my friends and I had to use our flip flops to paddle so we will be moving faster and get to the stopping point quicker; but, it still took us more than 45 minutes from the starting point to the finish line. And we all concluded we will never do it again. We find the activity boring; but the fact we did it together made the experience better. Sometimes it's not the place where you go to or what you do; but, the people you travel with that matters most.

Beautiful

By tgdg0806 |

My Son & I visited the falls near the baseball fields in town. It was in the middle of the week. Not to many people. A very nice place to spend the day with the family if one chooses to. We walked around an he showed me places to swim.

Pure bliss

The river is the only reason you need to visit San Marcos. Nothing beats a hot summer/spring/autumn/winter day at the river, yeah it is always hot here.

Fun!

By Kaylen S |

Favorite river! We go on most occasions or random vacations! I always feel safe and they keep the river very clean! It's a nice relaxing float, you can even swim to the sides and sit if you want to eat, drink, or just enjoy the nice water. Will always come back to this river and recommend to friends!

Very Nice

Makes me think of moving over here from Dallas!!

By Cataquiroz27 |

It's so beautiful in the morning. It's so green and the water is so cleared you can see the bottom. Recommend coming here during the week if you don't want too many people around if not it's worth coming to take a canoe trip.

The lions club really has a great facility
Would recommend to all who enjoy water activities

River Floating in Texas a MUST

By JBenziger |

Nice river despite an abundance of trash due to folks throwing beer cans, etc. into river (shame on you!). This float is VERY kid friendly and kid-full. I prefer less kids on my floats so this would be the last choice location for me as there are much better in the same area.

Refreshing River Spot

By Courtney1982 |

We went to Rio Vista Park in scorching July months and it was such a relief to get in the cold refreshing river water. Let me back up and say that we first attempted to visit on Sunday at around 1, but there wasn't one spot of grass to put your stuff on much less a parking spot. We were discouraged, but we vowed to come back on Monday morning. We did and it was a success. We arrived at 10 and were pretty much the first swimmers there (a few people were dog walking and eating breakfast). We got the first parking spot. There is a rope swing and 3 damns to ride down on your tube. Due to river conditions one could not go pass the 3rd damn. The park really is beautiful. I would say water shoes are a must because the rocks can get really slippery.

San Marcos River great place

Iconic San Marcos River !

always a fun place ! Fresh cool clear water ! always good for people watching

This was my Birthday weekend with Denise

By Thom M |

We line to travel in our RV, and we stayed at a rv park, on the river where all the floaters have to pass by us to get to there pick up place, so it was a great place to watch. The next day was a Friday, so Denise and I found a place that we could take our Academy tubes, and blow them up there and they would take us to the launch location and we would float back to there place. That took about 3 hours of water time, and it was great. Lots of people doing the same thing, but a pleasant group and friendly, and helpful if you needed any help. We were told to not go on the weekend, and that was good advice. The photos are from Saturday. You make the call.

Family getaway

By alwaysfuntravel |

Nice cool water in the hot summertime, tube rentals are a must! You can tie your tubes together with your own rope and you can take your cooler to enjoy your ride down the river.

always a perfect summer day on the river

By Kim S |

With a constant temperature of 72 refreshing degrees, the river is the perfect way to cool off on a hot summer day. You can tube, kayak, paddle-board, snorkel or even scuba dive (take a mandatory course to get certified on river conservation and assist in the preservation of this beautiful river). The water is crystal clear.
Best to go early in the day as it gets so busy in the afternoon. Tubes on top of tubes but everyone is so relieved to be on the water and getting cooled off that moods stay mellow and fun and congenial. I've tubed this river dozens of times and never had a bad experience either with the river itself or with any of the patrons. Please pick up your trash and keep San Marcos beautiful!

A good family place

By TamaraStephensRN |

We had a great time. There were a few rowdy, foul mouthed people(young and old) but we would just float away or wait till they passed. Seemed like everyone was doing that. THe Lion's Club is there on site to rent tube's from. $10 per tube with or without a bottom and $20 deposit per tube, they will take a credit card to hold(you know in case you don't show back up). You float down and at the end they have a station where you turn your tube in, get on a bus and get brought back to the top to tube again. Transportation was free with tube rental. They also have a pump station to blow up your own tubes and you can pay extra for the ride. Took about 1 1/2 hour to go down and I was told the river was low and slow. Way better than the other rivers were at this time. Did not have to get out and walk at all. A lot of nature ti view including under the 6 bridges you pass under(we saw a bat hanging out). Lots of turtles, dragonflies, ducks etc. GET THERE EARLY to get a good parking place at the Lions's Club. Bring a picnic. Water was chilly and refreshing.

Nice and easy

Spring fed and runs right thru town. Not as crowded as the Comal or Guadalupe. Very relaxing and convenient with the Lions Club shuttle.

Beware San Marcos on a Holiday!

By mikegus |

On July 4, 2014, my wife & I, along with our small puppy, visited San Marcos, Texas to enjoy the cool, refreshing river. That practically NEVER happened as no matter where we went on the river July 4 and 5, the crowd totally left no place on the bank uncovered nor any place in the river to enjoy. We first tried Rio Vista Park July 4.....had to be thousands of folks around the river...no place to park and because of so many people in the river, it was totally off-color! We then went to Sewell Park, where the water was still clear, but the signs all said "No Pets" so we left there. Funny thing was.....4 dogs with their owners walked into the park ahead of us, totally ignoring the sign/rules. I believe enforcement might be required for that city park. We then left the town and headed 15 miles to Leisure Resort on Hwy 80 in Fentress, Texas. We paid $7 for each of us and were told that pets were allowed. We drove to the riverfront and parked at one of the very few empty picnic tables. We started to enter the water when we saw a sign saying "No Pets". Since we were told they were allowed we stayed there for a couple hours. Upon getting out, especially after about 300-500 people came into the river, we walked back to our vehicle to leave. We noticed so many hundreds of cars/trucks had come into that resort looking to swim/picnic, I guess they took whatever picnic table they could find....INCLUDING OURS! As we got to our vehicle, they sort of just looked dumfounded at us not knowing if we would ask them to leave our area. We were so frustrated with all the crowd, we just wanted to leave. There are signs saying where you can and cannot park, but people parked anywhere they wanted as we had a very hard time driving away from the river and out of the park. The resort I guess had no care as to how many people they let in that day as money talks! Take it from us.....beware of this area on holidays and perhaps even ANY weekend. Absolutely not worth it. San Marcos is off our list for good!

Beauty & Fun, all in one.

By Lacey Ann |

Not only is it beautiful to look at and take pictures of, but it exudes a calming peacefulness, provides tons of fun for those wanting to swim/ float/ kayak or those who just want to stay dry, relax, soak up some sun, and take pictures of their crazy friends or family. Lol. People are usually nice, mind their own business, and everybody just enjoys the outdoors.

Cold and clear river.

By d_roeber |

Lots of people floating the river. It can get crowded on weekends.Lots of easy places to get in and out if you float. We sit in our chairs in the river and watch the crowd go by.

One of the best kept secrets in San Marcos

Tubing down the river is incredible. One trick is to buy into that the largest bee and they have an air pump that you can pump it up for free. Park and take Uber to return back to your car.

SO MUCH FUN

By MYOSUBUCKEYES |

BEAUTIFUL RIVER - loved it running through the Texas State campus. Very clean, -you can see the bottom - great current for jumping in and floating along. kayaking or tubing - fun for all!!! LOVED, LOVED, LOVED seeing grads jump in after graduation!

Beautiful, Gorgeous

By Debbie K |

There are multiple spots in San Marcos to be by the river with beautiful surroundings. Of course you have the typical hangout sports that are popular, so we avoid those in the summer. But there are plenty of other locations that are quieter. Tubing is very popular too if you like that. Just drive around town following the river and pick the spot(s) that suit your mood for the day! We like to go to the favorite hangout toward the end of the day after school & college is back in and have a picnic dinner! The pictures are all in that location.

Water, Finally!

By MrsKid2014 |

With all the rain in May & June this year the river was full and had a quick pace. Make sure to beach some place for a little while, otherwise you'll be in done in 2 hours.

Perfect for floating on an tube from the Lions Club,Rental. It is a summer treat to go on a lazy trip down the San Marcos River.

perfectly cool in the Summer

By Chusi G |

Rent a tube form Lions Club (bottom or bottom less) $12 includes bus to bring you back-unlimited runs ( we did it 2X) The river is clean and cool, even on our second run when it was crowded amazingly there is still room in the river form more people. We saw a lot of families in the morning, and adults drinking in the afternoon. Drinking is not allowed but people do it anyways. We saw cops giving tickets and making people dump the beers.

Great place to relax

This is a tranquil place to go and relax. Awesome place to go tubing, and wonderful place to swim in the summer.

Peaceful

My first time to float the river in San Marcos. About a 45 minute journey. The entire area is clean! No loud partying. Watch out for the rapids!

Great spot for a sunset dip!

By Moved2Texas |

We went down to the river with my daughter’s dog and they took a nice dip in the water. The spring fed river is crystal clear and a lot of locals including Texas State students were down there for a dip.

The area near the Lions Club is very accessible and not too deep. That is also a good spot to start a tubing run but this time it was just for a quick swim!

Great Family Time

By Nicholas S |

I do not know how Trip Advisor rates things, but this is clearly the pride and gem of the whole San Marcos area. I am not sure how an antique car place comes up rated higher. There are many city parks available to access the river. Depending on how old the kids are, where you go might be a choice. The main park at the waterfalls is very fun for older kids and adults. You can swim, tube or kayak the rapids. Just warning everyone that it gets super busy after work hours and weekends. For little kids, we found that walking down to the bottom of the third rapids by the bridge was very shallow for our 2 year old so she could play too. It is only about 6 inches deep there and lots of fun. Sewell Park is the best swimming, but it is for older kids. It is mostly all college kids, so get your cool on. There are many places to tube, swim or kayak.

Spring fed river that delights your soul!

By sandyclauss |

Beautiful clear and cool refreshing water. How many rivers can you see a dime at the bottom clearly from surface looking down 15 feet. Great for tubing, at a relaxed pace. Observe vegetation found only on this river. Easy access and tubes available if you do not have your own.

Calm Lazy River

Great tubing and just having a lazy day at the river. Many vacation rentals in the area. Short getaway from San Antonio, Austin and Houston!

Float the river!

By ngalindo1421 |

It's a great way to relax and see the beauty of this crystal clear River up close. But be warned, the water stays at a chilly 72 degrees but it feels great once you get in. If you don't want to float there's a great spot to swim and swing from rope into the water at Anita Reyes Park. I'd recommend bringing lunch and spending the day relaxing by the river. Don't forget to make time to take a glass bottom boat tour which is about $10 for adults and $5 for kids. My 5 year was amazed at the wide variety of fish in the water and by the springs pushing out water from deep beneath the earth. It's a great day trip to take in what San Marcos has to offer.

The Healing Springs

By Clarke H |

San Marcos, Texas is a wonderful small town and a gateway to the Texas Hill Country and my home. We are lucky to have a fabulous natural attraction here known as Spring Lake and formerly known as Acquarena Springs, Home of Ralph, the Swimming Pig! Incredible, powerful, pure natural springs fill this wonderful habitat with the cleanest water in Texas and it is the headwater for the San Marcos River. This crystal clear, ice-cold stream is a unique place to swim, fish, picnic, or just meditate at dozens of parks the City has created along the banks of the river. Whether you are a swimmer, kayaker, tube'r or just looking for a quiet and peaceful place to enjoy the outdoors, this is one of the neatest spots in this whole State to come and just hang out. A plunge into the San Marcos River on a 105 degree day is like being re-born. I always feel refreshed and reinvigorated after cooling myself to the core in this stream. Come see this wonderful, free, beautiful attraction. You won't regret the trip!

Year-Round River

By katamount |

This basically clear river also has a year-round water temperature of about 72 degrees (F), and originates at Aquarena Springs in San Marcos. Whether you enjoy tubing, kayaking, canoeing, or swimming, you can always find an enjoyable day here. Please keep it a clean river, both for the other people who want to enjoy it as well as for all of the aquatic life that thrives in this fine environment. If you have the time and inclination, go over to the Aquarena Springs Aquatic Center and learn more about this river, the springs, and the aquatic life found there. The center also has a wetlands boardwalk for further enhancement. Even the river by itself is a pleasant way to spend the day enjoying nature and the peacefulness of the environment. Great way to have some family time together.

Lovely Walk that you control

By Peppppy |

My wife and I made it a point to walk along the San Marcos River Walk in order to view the beautiful scenery and enjoy the outdoors. The walk was easy to navigate with mostly paved, smooth trails. Beautiful scenery, peaceful and lots of opportunities to sit, relax or reflect. Several areas of recreation to take advantage of, such as tubing, kayaking, fishing or kids playgrounds. Get out and enjoy and you won't be disappointed.

Such a beautiful river!

This river is fantastic for tubing or swimming on a sweltering day. The water is super clean and lazy, but there are a few chutes at the end of the tubing area for a quick thrill. A great activity in San Marcos!

This is clearly worth a visit.

Try A Friendlier River

By Alexis P |

Floating the river was mostly ok, minus the people who could not handle their alcohol and were starting fights with strangers. I have since heard that there are "friendlier/less trashy" rivers to float on in the New Braunfels area.
We also camped at Don's Fish Camp for this trip and it was awesome that there was no minimum night stay required and they allowed dogs with no pet restrictions, BUT the porta John situation there was absolutely horrible! We got there on a Sunday morning and the porta John were literally filled to the brim with excrement. If they had had them cleaned at least once over the weekend and restocked with toilet paper it would have made the camping experience more bearable. They also didn't have a mandatory quiet time at the camp so these people came in at midnight to set up their tents right next to ours and then blared their music until 4AM.
So I definitely can't recommend Don's fish camp as a place to camp by the river :/

The most refreshing thing on a hot summer/spring day!

By shutterbugbynature |

You cannot go wrong with the San Marcos river! It is so refreshing and although the cold is a bit shocking at first, after a minute you will be so happy you jumped in! There are several spots to enjoy the river that are FREE! Check out the lion's club tune rental, where there is a slower moving section of river with a more shallow area across from their building. This area is perfect for younger swimmers, just take the little bridge by the playground and walk to the right, but parents should always supervise. Although it moves slower it still moves! There is also Rio Vista Falls which is a small rapid area for those looking for a more thrilling ride. I will post pictures of each below. The first two are by lion's club and the second is in Rio Vista Falls, enjoy!

Nice river... didn't have all the chaos

By UmbergerA |

Visited the River with my family and our friends family. It's not a very long float but... you can hop back on the bus and float as many times as you want. It wasn't super crazy like the Comal or Guadalupe can get which was nice since we had the kids with us. The picnic area at the end is nice and there's a place where you can jump in and float over and over.
Very nice... and will definitely come back with the family.

Lions club tube rentals

Great float nice people money went to a great cause and the river was clean and safe to float. We will be coming again next year!

floating madness!

love the san marcos river, even during the summer when is typically full with drunk collage kids, it is still beautiful and clean.

The river is so refreshing this time of year. Lots of people to see and good times to be had. Will be back

Great 1-4 hours of fun.

By Brad B |

It is a great place to go tubing. If you start at the lions club and end at the tube chutes. It normally takes around 45 min to 2 hours to do one trip depending on the water level. Water is nice and cold.

For the adventurous

Although I did not get in the river. It was refreshing to see everyone having fun. Tubes and canoes rentals.

Beautiful river to float

By bberg3 |

Beautiful river, if you haven't floated down it, you need to try it! Clean, deep(ish) water. But keep in mind, it does run through a large, very crowded college town, so parking is hard to come by, not to mention all the college kids hanging out.

Awesome river! Clear and cold!

By rewilli |

Always a great float! Some of the most friendliest people you'll meet! Sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery!

The river was great

By Sadie D |

The river was gorgeous. The temperature felt perfect with the sun. We floated along the San Marcos River with texas state tubes. It was great and a lot of fun. Like a two hour float. We did it twice. I love the river. We will be back!

Texas Adventure Treasure

By Lauren W |

Who needs Schlitterbahn?!!!!?! We rented tubes from the Lion's Club (Fabulous experience- $10 per tube per day with bus service from base of river back to start so you can go again, no charge!) and floated the river 3 times, took about 1 hr each time. Only had to wait 5 minutes tops for the bus to take us back to the top of the river each time. Visited when the water was very high so the rapids at the end were crazy but ridiculousy fun! Great amount of shade and sun along the river and the water is CRYSTAL clear! At several points along the bank, swinging ropes are tied high in trees for great high flying leaps into the water! Bridges along the way also provide great climbing areas. Don't miss!

Beautiful

By GingerCabais |

Passed through and stopped by to take a look. It's clean and beautiful. If it wasn't so windy and chilly we would have definitely took the kids tubing. Parking is scarce but lots of space for families riverside. Great place to spend the day, have a picnic and great for photo ops.

San Marcos -- a good stop when in the area

By NF2013_13 |

Beautiful river running through town for so many to enjoy. San Marcos River is spring-fed from the Edwards Aquifer. Who knew Texas had an aquifer? I'm from FL and thought we were the only ones. The river is clear with long flowing grasses growing in parts. We saw kayakers and paddleboarders enjoying their day. The Town has adopted "mermaids" as its "known for" character. They are beautiful works of art located throughout the small city. If you're there, check out the Root Cellar Restaurant and be sure to stop by Kissing Alley.

River fub

By Natalia F |

While i spend some days in San Marcos, my friends decided to take me to ther over ;) we had great time swimming in tubes ;) river is clean and families friendly ;) I would totally recommend it!

By Wolfspark |

Real Texans know that natural springs are the only real way to beat the relentless heat of the long hot Texas summer. That being said. The San Marcos is unique in that it comes out the ground right there in San Marcos and the flows through town.
The City of San Marcos graciously offer a city park along the river which is free and open to all. Humans and the doggy companions can enjoy the cold spring water in swimming holes at the city park.
Many also choose to rent inner tubs and float down river where that picked up by a shuttle & returned to the park.
Go to the river if you can. It is one of Mother Earth's wonders.

Great day of lazy tubing

By Joel M |

Went tubing here with members of my extended family. It was a blast. Nice, easy, lazy current. Water flow is slow, but steady. Lasted three hours and the current picked up after the first hour. A nice easy ride.

Beautiful kayaking

By LBB6 |

We rented a canoe and kayak and did the "2 hour" trip down the river. It was a beautiful day and a lovely way to spend the morning.

So refreshing!

By Lisa W |

We enjoyed floating down the river. We rented tubed from the Lions Club of San Marcos and used their shuttle for an amazing day.

Floating The San Marcos River

By Michelle N |

It was amazing!!! We took our own tubes and floated several miles as well as went down the waterfall, the water was beautiful and clean. The sitting areas were nice as well. There were a lot of people yet plenty of room. It is definitely something I would recommend as well as love to do again.

Tubing on the San Marcos River through the Lion's Club

By mascaroc |

Spent a Saturday tubing...had fun, but waiting in line took longer than actually tubing. I speak no ill on any company, HOWEVER, you do get what you pay for. The experience is much different depending on what company you use. If you want to avoid a line, a higher priced company can help you avoid that...and if you don't mind, then a lower priced company might be for you. The river itself is fun, great no matter what age.

Nice place to cool off

By Drivesmanymiles |

The river was clear and looked clean! I was there during the flooding and this was the only thing we could do. It was over 90 degrees and the water felt amazing. Just be careful with small kids or non swimmers as the water runs pretty fast!

Beautiful clear water

By diannesmar |

This is the most beautiful river I have ever seen. The water is so clear. The area around Texas State's campus is so nice the water current is pretty swift. They are protecting an endangered species, Texas Wild Rice. I would love to go back when the weather is warmer. Tubing here must be fun. A student that is about to graduate told us that the water stays 72 all year. After the students graduate it is a tradition to jump in the river.

Teen Group Fun

By VinoMio_NYCluv |

Our church's Youth Group enjoyed a day on the River this week. Overall there were 17 teens and 3 adults. We rented our tubes from the Lion's Club and they were fabulous. We picked a weekday, got there early and there was no significant waiting (we probably created the waiting). The parking lots had plenty of spaces. Each kid paid $10 directly for their tubes and one parent put the maximum $100 deposit down on a credit card. (We didn't know about this max deposit before and that made things TONS easier.) We also rented a storage box for our car keys. I, as leader, wore a wristband that indicated our locker number, our number of tubes and life vests (we had a weak swimmer - highly recommend for piece of mind). Everyone who got a tube got a wristband. I had also rented a bottomed tube for a cooler of water and Gatorade, but the river run is SO short it really isn't that necessary. It was far easier on the second run to have each of the kids have their own bottles in the little mesh bag that is attached to the tubes for collecting litter. We all wore some kind of SPF shirt, or tshirt and water shoes. Multiple applications of sunblock is a must. The water is so cool you really don't feel how hot the sun is shining.
We brought some lengths of rope and a bunch of the kids looped it under the handles to stay together in clusters. Lions Club does sell 10 feet of rope for $3 as well, if you forget. I also tied the cooler tube to my tube and it wasn't too much of a hassle, but I did leave that extra stuff all on the bank when I ran the rapids at the bottom.
The water is clear and very cool which felt great after the initial jolt. The river is very slow moving and a few times much arm paddling and kicking was required. I definitely felt like I had a good workout, the next day. There are a few underpasses which are easy to navigate (but they have trash boats docked to them and they smell horrible! Best to pass under quickly). We saw beautiful herons, turtles and a few fish, as well as lots of dragonflies. We had no issues with any kind of unpleasant critters (snakes, rats) or bugs (mosquitoes or flies). Although a duck did try to get in someone's tube and wouldn't leave her alone for a while.
At the end of the run is the Rio Vista Park. Here the kids spent a lot of time jumping off the rope swings (there are two sets of two and the water is relatively shallow for jumping) and riding the rapids. We also ate lunch at this park. One of our chaperones parked their car here with the lunch coolers. There is no place to purchase meals in the park.
The reason I didn't give a 5 star for this experience is the rapids. I had a ball riding them personally. Everyone in a our group ran them, some quite a number of times, but we did have two frightening experiences with girls getting stuck under from the swirling current. It was a truly scary scary moment each time. The water is deep, it is strong, even on a normal flow day.
It is an at your own risk adventure, I get that, but there was also unfortunately a lot of dangerous behaviors from other park participants and very neglectful parents which add to the natural dangers for a responsible group. In one instance a jr high aged boy stood at the bottom of the first hill and jumped over the heads of other tubers (strangers). We yelled at him to stop and he did, but no supervision whatsoever. All of this to say, if you take your youth group, I would add adult chaperones next time to stand one at the top and one at the bottom of the rapids. Although, accidents can definitely still happen with this scenario, the idea is there's someone to witness and assist if possible. We did have three people who brought cell phones in watertight pouches. These would be invaluable in the case of a true emergency.
Back to the fun stuff....There were concrete and metal tables at the park, enough for us to have lunch, some shaded some not. There were also grills. If you picnic or take out on the right back, you seemingly have to get back in the water to get to the Lions Club pick up on the lower left hand of the river. You can either splash your way across the slow flowing portion or ride the rapids down further and walk up the stairs and walkway. The workers take your tube and give you a coin to turn in for a new tube back at the start. If you bring your own tube you can buy a wristband for unlimited rides. The drivers were very friendly and courteous, as was the whole staff. We turned in our items at the end with no problems, changed in the small and hot restrooms (not actual changing facilities) and headed home. I would do it again with our group, or my family in the future.

Cold low water

By ~Michelle My Belle~ |

So we were here for soccer tournament weekend. Love that the river came right to the park! Beautiful houses and rapids. They kids got to cool off between games. Great photo ops! Picnic area a bit dirty which brings bugs. Easy access to the water and the rail bridge was awesome.

Perfect Introduction to Doin' That Texas Thang

By Laurie S |

We've always wanted to try rafting since it's such a springtime rite. This is an excellent, safe way to start. It has a family atmosphere. We got in at the Lions Club tube rental, and went all the way to the mini-whitewater 45 minutes later. It was pleasant, and I felt safe. Certainly part of the fun is floating your 6-pack along side your tube. But they keep the river clean and pick up any cans. And we didn't witness any rowdy, out of control behavior.

Birthday river trip!

By Jamie H |

I went to San Marcos river on the 26th with my boyfriend and a friend. We were a little worried that we wouldn't have much fun because it was just the 3 of us, but much to our surprise we ended up having an amazing time!
Everyone was very nice and friendly. We took our own cooler and snacks but our cooler dumbed over and we were literally up the creek without a paddle. Much to our surprise people were offering drinks and snacks as if we were family. Our trip was only supposed to be a 2 hr trip but we ended up staying for 4 because of the hospitality.
Oh yeah, the river was beautiful. The water was clear and clean, unlike Guadalupe river. We will definitely be going back.

Multipurpose river

By Pintya |

The river is small used for variety of purposes like swimming, fishing etc. Its not dry in summer also.

Enjoyable afternoon

By SRW_TX |

My extended family really enjoyed an afternoon of tubing on the San Marcos River. The water is clean and cool and the current is just strong enough to carry you along at a leisurely pace. We had children age 8 up to adults and everyone enjoyed it.

We rented our tubes at the Lions Club and left our valuables with them. Everything was very smooth from beginning to end. They send a van to pick you up at the end and bring you back. If we had planned better, I would have packed some water and cash as there was a snack bar at the end.

There is also an area nears the end of the float with rapids and a stronger current where you can really have some fun!

My only complaint is there was a lot of vegetation in the water. My legs got caught in it more than once. It was be nice if the city could cut some of that back as it affects the quality of the float.

Great place for families

By Whitley22 |

This river is a pretty smooth float. There are 3 really fun rapids at the end. Or you can get out before you get to them. Super laid back.

Refreshing cool constant 73 degree water to float down during the heat of the day. Convenient drop in area and stops along the way to simply catch some rays and people watch.

"College Visit Gone Beautiful"

By Elvis1983 |

My daughter & I went to pick up her cap & gown for her summer graduation from Texas State University. She thought I'd enjoy the "scenic walk" from San Marcos River at Sewell Park to the school. Having my "personal guide" that knew the little short cuts & that didn't get us lost made it that more enjoyable. So peaceful, so clean & beautiful... foliage every where we turned. I just had to dip my toe into that beautiful crystal clear water---so cold! And this was mid July. The clarity of this river much resemble the same as the Tanna River in Alaska. We south Texans really need to make an effort to truly explore our "own Texas Backyards". We are so fortunate to have such beauty within 20 miles North, South, East & West.

By A_renee10 |

Some people scuba the bottoms for lost and found treasures! Bring a cooler and a six pack. Don't forget your ID. Cops can ask you to get out and check your ID if they see you drinking. There are plenty of places to hop in the river for free. I usually bring my own tube but there are areas that you can rent tubes from. Happy floating!

beautiful and relaxing

By caitlinhaf |

The river is a lovely experience, a true highlight of San Marcos. Depending on the area and on the time of year and weather the area is swarming with students which can be a good or not so great experience.

Don't miss this!

By bwannan |

We were in San Marcos considering a possible move here. After checking it out while we loved the new development called Kissing Tree, we realized that what we had was hard to beat.
Having driven fromDallas, about 500 mile round trip, we decided to look around.
The San Marcos River is fantastic and worth a visit.

Love tubing the San Marcos

By sandrasdillon |

We always park and rent our innertubes from Don's Fish Camp. We brought my 77-year old mother along for her first float. We had a blast. Perfect combination of accommodations of float and a few little rapids. She wants to come back next year! Go figure!

Rio Vista Park in San Marcos

By daphnepoco |

Very dangerous! This review is based on swimming with no tubes or rafts down the water fall. (Otherwise beautiful)

It is very very dangerous to swim this, the current is very strong, I am a very strong swimmer and got pulled under the water, you cannot stop, you go down the first water fall, got pulled under, I swallowed a bucket of water, I tried to swim to side and before you know it you are going down the 2nd and 3rd water fall getting pulled under the water and swallowing more water. The current is to strong to walk across on the 2nd and 3rd level, you can on the top level.
This seems fun in a raft or kayak if you knew what you were doing, I have a 16 year old who had a hard time as well down the falls.
Swimming around the falls, was awesome, very clear beautiful water. Very cold but once you got in it, you got used to it. We went in sunset and night so Im not sure if the current got stronger then during the day. Since we went later day there was no crowd around 6pm, unsure what day crown would be, seems very popular.

I recommend swimming around this park, the park is very nice, just beware of waterfalls and under pull.

If you bring your own tube...

By Barbie D |

Here’s some information I knew in advance: If you bring your own tubes you can Still park at Lions club (free) but if you want a ride back from them you still need to purchase transportation ($8/person and they don’t charge for littles). I was a little confused and didn’t plan well for that portion. Getting in is easy at lions but if you walk a little farther to Sewell it will help extend the very short ride, since I had littles with me I had to stop at the first sign of rougher water and it had only been approximately 40 minutes. Also you can purchase air for your tubes there ($2/float).

I don't want to tell you about this because I would love to keep it for myself

By Lynn V |

This is absolutely the most clear freshwater I have ever seen. It is a beautiful color, consistently 72 degrees, and very popular with us locals. The upper portion is lined with parks as the river goes through town. All are good but for snorkeling stay close to the beginning. Tubing through town is fun and with the trails to walk back you can make the trip multiple times. The lower river below Martindale is very popular with college tubers. Both are fun. Locals tend to prefer early in the day and weekdays to avoid crowds. Park rules in town prohibit alcohol, glass, and Styrofoam. Wish we could have the same rules for the college students.

Family dun

By Anne |

Loved tubing down the river with Texas State tubes! Well made tubes, great to tie together so you stay with a loved one on the easy meander down. 2.5 hours of easy floating and just a little small “rapid” or two. Nothing to make me nervous. During the weekend there are plenty of folks drinking and partying with their coolers and small bathing suits. I’m sure during the week it would be more family friendly with less local entertainment and more just pure natural beauty of the scenery. Would definitely recommend and will do again when in the area.

Don’t miss this

By bobcatmom |

Had an amazing time! River was beautiful! Enjoyed every second! Spent the weekend in San Marcos at Texas state orientation and at the river.

Great Family Friendly tubing experience

By Jennifer Z |

We visited Texas State Univ. and tubed the SM River while there. Rented tubes from Lions Club - nice yellow tubes that don't get as hot as the black ones in New Braunfels. Not nearly as crowded as New Braunfels either. The river is clean and it is family friendly. We saw mostly families. there.

By Rknrljunkie |

Floated 3 different times while in town for 5 days to visit family & loved every minute of it! We were able to fill our tubes close by, hop in the river, a 10 minute walk back to the car & was ready to go again. The river is clean & the perfect temp. If I could do it everyday, I would. :)

Cleanest River in Texas

By Charles J |

Best tubing river for families, especially with small children. Take advantage of the Lion's Club tube rental in City Park and ride their shuttle back.

Great tubing...even if you can't swim!

By nancybaby |

I highly recommend floating down the river in San Marcos! I can't swim, and had no trouble at all. On a hot day, the water is nice and cold!

A huge frat float jam

By Allison595 |

College kids were drinking, smoking weed, swinging from ropes, fishing, playing catch with dogs, peeing, spitting, and trashing the river. There were many groups tied together in huge blocks that caused tube jams. You have to be careful to lift your back in a lot of parts or else you will get scraped by rocks and logs. We ended up finishing our ride with more beer than we started, since we were catching full beer cans others lost along the way.

The best outdoor location in San Marcos

Its the bread and buttah

By Valera B |

Everyone comes for the River. It is beautiful- although it can get really crazy at times and seems to be overrun by drunken toobers. It can be a great time for sure, just something to consider if you have young children. It is a very "party" atmosphere

A good place to cool off

By Roger W |

My wife and I floated the river 6 times it was great we rented tubes at the lions club and floated down just relax and let the current do the work at the end there our rapids I don’t recommend for small kids they can get out before the rapids but if you want some excitement go for it then get on a lions club bus and go back and start all over it’s a great time

Family Day Trip

By K B |

Spur of the moment day trip - drove to San Marcos with the kids to float down the river. Rented tubes from the Lions Club in San Marcos. Noticed their parking lot has drastically increased from a few years ago, which was good. Rental was smooth. Put the tubes in the river and floated down the river. It was very hot outside and the water felt icy and relaxing. Lions club brought us back for another round. The rapids were neat to watch. Two in our party went down. The water runs fast and you can get caught in a current in the middle of the falls - when that happens, you stick there until someone comes down and knocks your tube so you can continue down. It is a little tricky to get out of the water once you reach the end. There is one set of stairs and I recommend using that instead of trying to get up the rocks. Recommend they put in a small amount of food to purchase to include hot dogs or something easy, but more filling than candy/chips that are offered. Bathrooms had no toilet paper or soap so they might want to have someone check on that - it was early in the day, too. Fun things to do during a very hot day! Recommend the Lion's Club as the staff is friendly and the tubes were in good shape.

Awesome place

By BLYP21 |

The place is gorgeous, we had a great time going in the river , enough space for everybody, well maintained, I just ask everybody who goes there please take care a lot of the place and environment, this is the only way that the river could be clean and healthy.

A great day in the sparkling pure San Marcos River

By Peggy S |

We moved here about 20 years ago and our children and grandchildren have had hours of fun in the San Marcos River. They have had fun on the bottomless boat touring the springs and seeing all the growth and fish in the river. They have visited the museum by Texas State on conservation, explanations of the San Marcos River and aquifers that feed the rivers in San Marcos, Austin, and New Braunfels. Just in the past few years, the city has built an area you can slide inbetween large boulders (shown above) and get out below in the shallow area. Or, you can get out of the river for the less adventurous ones without going down the shoot. All in all, it is a nice trip down the river from the place you rent your tubes (locally called "toobs). The tube rental also comes with a pick up of you and the tubes back to the rental facility. There is no time limit for the tube to be returned. I think you have to put down a deposit (or credit card number) in case the tube is not returned. Come see us and enjoy our crown jewel of San Marcos.

we had a blast!!!!

By Erin A |

IT was fun and a great way to spend time with the family.. Just had to ignore the drinking and the party atmosphere

Summer Fun

By Levi C |

Great escape from the summer heat! Visited Austin over the July 4th holiday and took a day trip down to San Marcos to get into the cold, spring fed river. Several locals recommended the Lion's Club for the most affordable and easy tube rentals and after a little research that was our choice. Super affordable, lot's of helpful staff, a small shop for any last minute needs, and free parking made for a great experience out of the water. The river itself was cool and refreshing with beautiful clear blue water. Given the holiday and hot 98 degree day it was busy but didn't feel overly crowded. Unlimited shuttle rides come with tube rental. Each float down river last about 45-60 min and ends at a three tiered rapid that you can opt out of if you like, but is lots of fun! There is also a small snack kiosk at the end. Highly recommend it!

Info. As of July 2017

Rates:
Parking - Free
Tube Rental (With or w/o bottom) - $12 (unlimited shuttle rides included)
Tether Rope - $1 for 10'
Bag of Ice - $2
Inflate your own tube - $4
The shop has anything else you might need; snacks, swim suits, sun glasses etc.
$20 cash deposit for tubes or leave your credit card on file. There are several other tube rental spots in the area as well.

So Much Fun on the River

By Carla H |

Easy on and off; best place for picnics and spending the day enjoying the water. Best spot for teens: opposite Ivar's River Pub at the end of the tube ride.

Great place, with natural water slides & falls.

By sharberfam |

At the very end of the floating experience there are 3 small drops, they almomst look like slides made from rocks. There's an exit prior where most folks get off. I suggest you get out and check them out before you go in blindly. They are WAY rougher than they look. I definitely would not use an inflatable on them because you're guaranteed to flip. I also would not go down around anyone iwth a float. I saw many people get stuck underneath the float in front of them. Its too deep to stand up, so you have to swim. We lost a pair of Oakley's and an UA hat. Its wildly fun, but for all of these reasons I suggest you do it with the understanding of where to swim once you pop up.

Now, once you take the bus back to the rental facility you can go further up the river, I would suggest this area for very strong swimmers only. It looks easy and fun, but the current is fast. You can actually see the current from above. That current makes it hard to get out, even on the ladders. It was fun for us because we are used to swimming outdoors, not just in a pool. Our kids have an understanding of how currents work, to not panick, and always signal if you need help, but we saw a lot of people and young children who had no business being in this area.

Going to the San Marcos is a beautiful experience. Seeing the crystal clear water and an occasional fish or 2 is one of the best ways to clear your head for a bit.

Beautiful!

By christianfay11 |

San Marcos river is beautifully kept and family friendly! Love floating from Lion's club to Rio Vista with the "chutes."

Tubing

By Anne S |

The river is a great place to swim. I swim in Sewell park by the university. It's where a lot of locals go. Rio vista is where the falls are and I'd only go there to go down the falls. Tubing is a must if it's summer. The water is always 72 degrees so that helps. It's cold when you get in but just plunge in and it's great.

Cold water, fun time

By joshuay435 |

The river in the summer heat is a great place to be, plenty of water and river for everyone to swim, float, or just hang out. Lots of people during summer in afternoon thru evening, best to go when everyone is in school, or get there before noon. Water is always a constant temp, so in the hot sun feels super cold. Its has different areas to try in sm, so try them all

Best part of this town

By Ditzyleopard |

The river is what drew us to San Marcos, I worry that the city is letting too much development along its banks. It was sad to see all those party houses going in on river road on our last float. Hope the city is ready for trash duty from those students.

Clean and Wide

By Nannette R |

Very Clean, wide and few obstructions in the middle. Was at a family wedding and decided at the last moment to try this out - boy are we glad we did. Had a blast and the river was moving fast that day.

Easy summer cool down

We moved our daughter into college and went to the river for a cool down. No time to do a float, although there were hundreds in the river. Not too crowded where we were. Easy access down stairs to the water. Easy in and out. The current was not strong, but enough if you wanted to float on a tube. There were grasses in the water, but nothing scary. you can see bottom and stand chest high at the deepest (on an adult.) The banks had limestone rocks that you could stand on or lay out and there were trees for shade. Very nice, and the Lions Club offered tubes for rent right there. There were also public restrooms (flush) that were clean.

Tubin' down the River

By Chris H |

I'd never been tubing before so this was a first for me. We hired big yellow inner tubes, you can pick to have a bottom in your tube or let your bottom drag in the water.
We had the misfortune of tubing on the day that the emergency services were looking for a missing tuber, and sadly he was located somewhat close to where we were floating by a snorkeller and his little paddle boarding dog.
However as an experience in itself tubing was a good way to cool off on a very very hot day. Recommended for swimmers.

River fun

By Dwayne M |

It's a fun way to spend a hot summer day. Tubing, swimming, fishing, or canoeing clean cool water. Places to hang out and BBQ. Fun for the whole family of individuals looking for fun and others to hang out.

Breathtaking Experience

By Donna L |

Crystal blue waterfall on East Sessom Drive. We did not partake in the recreational activities at the park. We just enjoyed the natural beauty of the water.Really hard to describe the beauty of this area. You need to go there and experience it for yourself!

BEST RIVER IN TEXAS

By Moe J |

Crystal clear water at a constant 72 degrees year around. Several areas for swimming and kayaking. Summer finds lots of tubing on the river for a leisure float of almost an hour. Good walking area along the river for scenic stroll.

Great fun on a hot day

By Rick B |

My kids loved swimming in this fresh water river that was very chilly but great for the hot summer day. A little slick on the bottom, so we were glad we wore the water shoes. Fun free and cool

Relaxing fun!

By 133vickiel |

Floating the San Marcos river was extremely fun and relaxing. The river flow was just right. We gently floated thru the towering cypress trees while watching turtles sunning on nearby logs.

Fun day with friends

By Elizabeth A |

We had lots of fun floating the river. It is gorgeous and the people at the Lions Club were super efficient, but compared to other hill country rivers, it was unimpressive. The float lasts about 45 minutes. Then, you have the option to get out, ride back, and float again (which we did 3 times).

The water is clear and a continuous temperature of 72 degrees. It is part of the aquaifer.

By Karen A |

The Lions club tube rental is the place to be. Great for the family and you can go down the river as much as you want! Try it because you won't be disappointed!

an amazing river right thru Texas State University

By Tanya W |

We live right "down the road" in North Austin. we love walking around the park and the campus. The river access is a bonus. a great place to hang out w/ family and friends. The Lions Club offers shuttle service for tubers. it's all worth it.

Stunning river running through the heart of town!

By Lacey C |

This is a beautiful clear river that runs through the heart of town. I have tubed it long ago with friends. The park also offers great seating to just enjoy the splendors. It is very quiet when it's not summer and you can enjoy the peace and tranquility that the river itself offers.

Beautiful River for a float!

By Moved2Texas |

We went tubing on the San Marco River. We did an hour float putting in by the Lion's Club tube rental and coming out near the low water dam next to Ivar's River Pub. The water is so clear due to this spot being just downstream from the Aquarena Springs headwater where the river begins. We saw many turtles and nesting ducks with their young families. My family purchased wrist bands for a return trip to the beginning with the Lion's Club, but I only made one trip as I had to leave early. It is an extremely relaxing spot and a great float!

Beautiful

By ssrrcchh |

The San Marcos River is beautiful! We went to the children’s park nearby (amazing park!!) and then took a stroll next to the river. We were able to see fish, turtles and geese! Enjoyable & relaxing place!

Great river to float!

By YYBS2016 |

Nice and quiet during the week. Great way to relax. Lots of places of places to rent tubes. You can bring your own cooler and cans are allowed.

The heart of Texas

By beamer1983 |

Floating the river is one of us Texans' main past times! Come along for the ride y'all!! You can relax the whole way or hop out and swim in the gorgeous, clean water! The surroundings are picture perfect and you will hardly ever meet an unfriendly character! We are all friends on the river!

Day break

By Scooter V |

Really enjoyed the float at lions park
Took a break from a long hot double headed baseball game. The boys had a great time while the adults enjoyed the water

Surprised it was so nice

By JenRed2014 |

This was a big surprise for us when stopping in San Marcos. Parking was free, there are bathrooms and a playground. You can walk right up to the river and use the steps to access the water. The tiered walls are convenient to sit on or place your shoes, towels, etc. on a hot day in February there were several people swimming and a bunch in kayaks and SUPs. It’s definitely chilly and refreshing, and seems quite clean!

A Cool Place to Chill Out

By Jay M |

The San Marcos River stays around 70 degrees all year long, so it's a great place to cool off on a hot day. I would recommend wearing aqua socks of some variety, as the ground can be rough on your feet in places.

Lazy days

Great river with tons of memories. We did not float but siting along the banks was pretty nice and water flow looked good.

Really fun and relaxing tubing!

By Antshrike73 |

My wife and I visited Austin, New Braunfels, and San Antonio (which are all wonderful) and spent an afternoon floating down the San Marcos River. We had read a few negative reviews, but we had a terrific experience! $6 for all-day shuttle service or $12 for tube and shuttle seems like a bargain to me and the staff were really friendly. The float is only about 45 minutes long, but the Lions Club runs the shuttle frequently all day, so you can go as many times as you care to. At the put-in and take-out the river is sometimes pretty crowded, but in between floaters spread out quite a bit. We went when it was about 100 degrees in the sun, but the water was cool and refreshing. At the take-out point there is a series of flumes which they tell you to get out before, but I ran them and they were super-fun and only slightly scary. I did lose my good hat when the standing waves flipped me though, so I'd make sure everything of value is either tied to the boat or banked before the rapids if I did it again. Go and have fun!

Beautiful!

By Claudia T |

This river is lovely, runs by the University, so it is often used by the college students. Its refreshing and peaceful.

tubing was good, rapids were dangerous

By futurelawyer2005 |

Tubing was great for first time, short tube but the rapids flipped and overwhelmed most swimmers. The current at the bottom was so strong and they need a rope at the end for people to grab ahold of and be able to get out better

Refreshing...

By txmmoore |

I use to tube down this river 20 years ago. I recently went to reminisce, and although it has become "commercial", I still enjoyed my hour journey down the river. The water is still refreshing. The amount of people in the river has increased over the years, but everyone seems to enjoy this small quaint trip.

Tubing with toddlers!

By Aviatrx |

We recently tubed with our 2 and 4 year old, the experience was so much better than I had anticipated. We arrived Tuesday morning at opening/10am to minimize heat exposure, we rented tubes and a lockbox at the lions club and off we went! Even on a 90+ day we were all comfortable and enjoyed the river, we didn’t feel dehydrated or over exposed, it was a great family outing!

Positives:
-bathrooms at the lions club
-Free parking, we arrived early so we got a great spot
-shuttle service included in tube rental
-river float length is very comfortable, 30-40 minutes at a very gentle pace and easy for small kids
I liked that the tubes came with optional bottom, this was great for holding a small cooler too!

Cons:
-entry into river has metal stairs (slippery) but it is deep, approx 4 feet so mounting tubes can be tricky
-tube rental is pricey, $15 per tube (it is unlimited use) and no reduced price or size of tube for kids.
-lack of a shallow swimming area, there is a footbridge and spots along the banks that could work, but I recommend the shallow swimming area further up the river accessible at sewell park.

Refreshing

By daruelasg |

Great place to go and just dip your feet in, if that's what you want to do, or you can tube or even take a swim. The water is nice and cool, pretty clean and not too deep. I'd say it was a good 4 ft at the most in the area I was at, but don't know if it's consistently the same depth in all areas. And it's free! What more could you ask for! Hoping to go back again before summer's over.

Summer fun

By DrsShannonandTed |

Tubes rent for reasonable price. Great way to spend a few lazy hours. Do not forget sunblock! Price includes bus back to parking

Fun,fun and more FUN!

By Jules K |

What a beautiful place to bring the family to have a picnic, play around and of course swim. Spend an hour or the entire day. Either way we always have so much fun when we go to the river. Best of all, it's Free! We always enjoy people watching and there are usually lots of people around willing to join us playing Frisbee or just tossing a ball around. It's just a pretty area to hang out and have fun!

Fun Fun Fun

By Mi-Dan20 |

Fun fun fun...crowded on holidays (we stay away on the holidays) yet on normal days a wonderful experience. Great for floating or just getting in and out flowing with the river. You can rent floats which is a great option if you do not have one, makes it so much easier to rent. Be careful of the down stream "waterfall" area as it is powerful and we got knocked off our float otherwise it is a pleasant experience, natural spring and great for family, friends and just fun!

Fun in the river

By Jaidennbellasdad |

We had a blast tied my 6 year old to us floated all.the down to the falls and yes we rode them my daughter loves the river..my boyfriend loves all the girls in swim wear lol he is 16 years younger than I am but we have kids and so much fun. Hoping to move to san marcos tx . Late this year. Go float shop enjoy....relax..its pure awesomeness green clear water.. Cold on hot Texas days hits the spot. Be safe xo

Beautiful river

By jtnd |

The water here was so beautiful and clear there were people swimming and kayaking down the river. They're putting in a bar that looks over the water or doing remodeling. Must stop for a short look.

ONE OF THE BEST SWIMMING SPOTS

By AEBBrenham |

Located right in the heart of San Marcos, this is one of our favorite swimming and tubing rivers. The swimming area is nice enough to spend the whole day or you can enter here and tube down the river. The crowd is always pleasant at the swimming area and a nice range of ages and ethnic groups. And the water is always clear, cold, and refreshing.

Great Experience

By Shanna A |

Went over the Labor Day Weekend... had a great experience. The Lions Club has convenient location in the San Marcos Park (near Texas State Univ) with tube rentals, air purchase available for your personal rafts, and shuttle service for return. The water was very cold so I recommend a tube with a bottom. It was crowded but enjoyable because the Lions Club accommodations and services are pretty quick and painless. Had a personal tube, a rental, and an inflatable kayak..bought rope from Lions club, tied tubes and kayak together, had snacks, and water, and enjoyed the sun and floating down the river. Manuvering was a challenge for first time float but we managed. The trickest part was nearing the end a cement bridge prevents you from going further but going under or around is an option (its hard to get out of the water so going under it (because its hallowed out to allow for passing) is the easiest. There is a water fall near the end on the right side with a strong current known to flip over tubes (but for first timers and small children its recommended, keep left to avoid fall safely use stairs to get out of the water with ease.) From the park to Lion's club shuttle is about a 45 minute trek (not rough but smooth floating).

Don't Come Now

By Paul K |

The San Marcos River is gorgeous. There are multiple river parks where families can relax and swim in crystal clear water. It can be really busy on weekends.

MAY 6 - PARKS ARE STILL CLOSED!!... There are fences up. The police will send you away, ticket you if you do not leave. So, don't come. Come when things are safer and have a fine time. But you will have wasted the drive for now.

Float Time!!

By dftexas |

This was actually my first float and it was great. The water was very cool, refreshing and clean. The float time was great for me. During the week is less crowded making the wait time for the shuttle much shorter.

A great spot to float a river

By Moved2Texas |

We put into the river near the Lion's club - close to Texas State Universith. It is a wonderful, cook spring fed river and a great spot for tubing. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed our day. There is lots to see and the locals are working to preserve the river grass. It is a great spot!

Very relaxing!

By Pamela L |

We floated the river twice. It was so nice and relaxing. Clear water. The Lions Club has a great tube rental and shuttle service

Love kayaking or tubing on the river or just picnicking or dining beside it!

By Sheryle G |

The San Marcos River is a slow-moving river (except after major thunderstorms) that flows through the center of town, providing a unique kayaking or tubing experience. It is SO refreshing to kayak or tube on the river (HEB's and other local establishments will fill your tube with air for free). It's also nice to watch others enjoying the river by dining in one of the restaurants that are along the river or picnicking alongside it. It's a clean, generally clear river that residents take pride in ... A prime activity for college students but great fun for all ages!!

Crystal clear since the begining....

By Kevin H |

One of the most unique spring fed rivers in North America, with archeological evidence of habitation by humans as old as 10,000 years. Home to a myriad of federally endangered species very unique to this river, and the ecosystem. At 72 year round, this beautiful river meanders from the headwaters in Spring Lake in San Marcos Texas, connecting with the Blanco River just outside of San Marcos, and running all the way to the Texas Coast at Seadrift. The water which pushes out of the more than 300 springs is several times more pure than the scientific standard drinking water for human consumption. The River has an incredible history of discovery, recreation, ecology, and continues to be a miraculous and special place for humans and a source of life for both land dwelling and water dwelling species.

Tubing

Cleanest most clear river in the state of Texas. Friendly park rangers easy parking close to the river.

Fun

By Claudia H |

The river is fantastic for tubing. If you don't want to rent a tube you can just swim. The water is clear and clean.

LET'S HAVE FUN

By BUGI_70 |

San Marcos river is very near to downtown and with its two small falls it tubers's paradise.
But you can also sunbath on the grass or take a bath in the calm waters.
Topless is allowed all over Texas.
In the morning it's almost peaceful but obviously, in the afternoon, especially in weekend days, it's a little bit crowded.
No free parking problems.
It is something special you haven't to miss if you love adventure, fun and water.
Kids get crazy for that.

Parking

By 1968carind |

The river itself was wonderful. Parking at the river was two thumbs down. It was horrible then once we found a spot you had to walk seems like forever.

Beware, this is not a water park!

By kmaddy2015 |

This was our 1st time at this river. Well, after going down one of the falls, we flipped out of our tubes, lost a couple of pairs of glasses, lost a tube, and received bruised and scrapped up knees and legs. We were lucky no one drowned or got hurt seriously. Well, apparently we didn't get the message to keep to the far left to go onto the banks if you want to catch the bus to go back up. The river was not 45 min. but more like 20-30 min. float because of the recent heavy rains they had making the river faster, stronger and higher than normal. We rented tubes at the Lion's Club and didn't care for them holding my credit card upon us returning our tubes. The little lockers they have behind the counter do not lock, instead you just write down your possessions on a card. I recommend they have a life guard overlooking by the falls and have an employee actually go down the river everyday to report the conditions of the ride. Have every family member that is new sit in on a short orientation conducted by an adult employee. They are all young teens working there. I also would not recommend tying the tubes together, it's harder to paddle.

NO parking fees, No entry fees, San Marcos River is a fun Day Trip!

By mckenzie10210 |

Went to the San Marcos River, park hours are from 6 am - 11 pm. There is no camping in the city limits of San Marcos, however if you go to Martindale or outlying towns there is camping. Great thing about the park is that there is NO entry charge and NO parking charge. We rented tubes at the at City Park and floated down to Rio Vista Park. We had a very nice day trip for sure!

Freezing cold, but a good float!

By Jennifer F |

Relaxing, peaceful float until you reach the rapids! Was taken by surprise by the rapids and flipped out of my tube a few times but overall it was a good experience. Hold onto to your sunglasses...I lost mine.

By Lynne C |

The San Marcos river is such a beautiful part of Texas. It has a steady flow and is almost crystal clear!
Also, if you enjoy wildlife, there are many water birds and fish to view. Texas wild rice is also common in the area and is beautiful if you look at it from a distance or from a bridge. Note: the wildrice is sectioned off for protection of its natural environment... Please keep out.

Cool surprise

By Kelly W |

Spent the afternoon floating the river. Had a great time. Water was cool and clean. Rented the tubes at Lions Club, along with buying a shuttle pass. When I come again, I’ll pack a lunch to enjoy at The park where the Lions Club rental is located. You can access the river there for swimming and wading without having to do tube rental. I’d also take a floating cooler with drinks for the river and plan to hole up for awhile and enjoy the scenery rather than drifting straight through. Do plan to wear a shoe, other than a flip flop, that you don’t mind getting wet. Areas of the river bottom are covered with plant life and are uncomfortable to step on with a bare foot. It’s a great place, especially on a very hot day. Would definitely recommend!

OH MY JESUS

By charlotte j |

we go every summer at least every other weekend. we park at the lions club . this place is just wonderful we love to float down this river all day. great parks for the little kids if they don't want to float. the lions club is awesome.BUT BEWARE THE WATER IS LIKE ICE......LOVE IT

Beautiful year round. Tubing is the best way to cool off in the hot summer months.

By Mary Lynn B |

I liked that the river had a park area at a place where you could stop tubing and enjoy grilling some hamburgers. Even an(a) infant/toddler pool park just off the river as well.

Lazy Afternoon

By Bob K |

Drifting down the San Marcos River in a tube is very pleasant. The river is clean and cool, most of the scenery is natural, most of the other tubers are pleasant, the waterfall is fun and the ability to enjoy a beverage during the drift makes it even better .

tubing

By steeler75 |

we rented tubes from the lions club, floated the river (about 45 minutes), road the shuttle back & floated again...crystal clear water, perfect temp for swimming

Cool and clear

By Tisha G |

This is a beautiful River. It is clearer the closer you get to the springs but is still very nice downriver. Everyone enjoyed it:)

An afternoon well spent

By Afoodie65 |

The glass bottom boat ride on crystal clear San Marcos River should not be missed.
The college student who 'captained' the boat and served as our guide was very good and funny. His 'lecture' gave us a better appreciation for one of the wonders of the area.
Afterward we spent a lot of time wandering through the small but informative aquarium.
Time well spent at both locations and hardily recommend if in the area.

A must do

By Blue Highways of Texas |

The Lions club doe an excellent job renting tubes and shuttling customers back to the original drop-off point. It's a smooth, lazy one hour float down the San Marcos River. There are some small rapids at the end if you're the adventurous type. The river is unexpectedly cold, so be forewarned. It can be very crowded in the summertime weekends.

Interesting with history

By gustav2011 |

You can tube on the river or take a tour on a boat with a glass bottom and learn all about the springs. Really amazing to learn water used could be as old as 1700s due to the way the springs exist. Very cool. Also there are some great trails - Spring Lake near the boats.

Love this place

By B-row23 |

Always enjoy swimming in the San Marcos River! It's cold but once you get used to it, it's a lot of fun!

Amazing river

Why do they announce it, if access is closed, I came from the Texas Valley for this???.
The worst thing is that they keep announcing it....😡😡

River running fast

By sharistar |

River is running very fast, which makes for a great float. But the rapids in Rio Vista Park are running super fast & is very deep. Not good for kids or anyone who cannot swim really good. Be very careful!

Best place to take a dip!

By aroundtheworldinkatydays |

The river is spring water, so it's completely clear and a great temperature year round. Bring some goggles and look at the fish while you swim. Or you can bring some tubes and float. The river is free and definitely worth dedicating an afternoon to if you have the time!

Fun place to people watch

By wewantotravel |

Neat sight to see and walk around. Must be able to climb on slippery rocks. Fun to see tubers go down falls.

72 Degree water on a hot summer afternoon

By Ron J |

A fantastic place to spend some time to relax on the water. I would recommend the Lions Club for tube rentals while on the water. One can float down the river in the very comfortable 72 F water and they will bus you back for ride after ride. I do suggest making a day out of the experience by packing lunch and drinks as there really is none available on site. Parking is free.

Fabulous

By Anita767 |

The Lion's Club tube rental and bus service was fantastic. The river is beautiful, relaxing and a lot of fun. I highly recommend if you are in San Marcos in the summer, this is a great family activity. It is less crowded if you arrive at 10:00 AM and leave by 1:00 PM. Liked that thy had locker rental for personal itmes like car keys.

Meh

By Christie |

So it seems the only way to access the river is with a float service, so enjoying a leisurely afternoon beside the river is out of the question. The banks were over-crowded, the police were taking beer away from people left and right (not a great family environment), and the rapids didn't look safe for my kiddo. I'm not sure what the hype is about but I'm sticking to the Comal. People were also throwing their trash into the river while we sat there. Underwhelming.

Always fun!

By 1234texas |

This is a pretty little inner tub float down the river. If you are in town for a day or two --do it!
There are a number of providers, but they all do the same thing. Bring beer and a trash bag.

By far better than Guadalupe River!

By bkra2513 |

We went to Don's Fish Camp and rented tubes, got on river there and came back on a bus. It was lots of fun!!!

First-time tubing experience

By runner_cw |

We tubed down the San Marcos River using tubes and shuttle provided by the Lion's Club....lots of fun!!! Very helpful for us first-timers who live very far away from any river (that flows).
