One of the great scenic spots for the Augusta area. Always peaceful and fun. I’ve never deleted safe there. Only thing I’d like would be a better playground with swings for all ages (not just baby swings).

It's a must to stop into this historic house and chat with the charming southern bell historian. She has an incredible amount of history to share with you about the area the canal and Savannah River. There is a beautiful park area to enjoy and a very nice pathway to view the old lochs, and waterway with the rapids and small water falls. Beautiful area to visit. They also offer kayak rentals along the waterway.

This is the trailhead for the River Watch trail. It ought to be the first thing you see when you get here. It is just a beautiful trail, with the Savannah river on one side, and the Augusta Canal on the other. There's nothing like it.

Too bad it was nighttime - the facility is super nice, very well done, and I understand the view in the daytime is really great.

The visitor center is informative and well-situated at a location, Savannah Rapids Park, that is scenic year-round. After loading up on information, treat yourself to the trails in the adjacent Augusta Canal National Heritage Area, the history of which is inextricably tied up with the Savannah River and its rapids. Touted as the only intact industrial canal in the American South in continuous use, the falling water of the mighty Savannah was put to both very good and quite dubious use over time. These trails offer excellent views of both the canal and the river in various spots, including the rapids. The trails are beautifully maintained, with frequent signage and amazingly clean restrooms.

This trail is nice for a walk or run.
I often see people walk their dogs, or ride their bikes on this track.
I think it's very nice pleasant early in the morning.
It is even a nice local for pokemon GO

This visitor center marks the beginning of a canal walkway that is absolutely beautiful. Also, besides walking, there are many other attractions, especially kayaking and bicycling. And, this area of August is chocked full of history. Great place to walk, run, or just visit.

By Daniel S |

If you love scenic and peaceful trails this is the best place. There is a bike shop where you can rent, buy or get your bike fixed by the bike whisperer.

By Marlena |

I absolutely love this place. Ample parking with shade. playground for small kids, restrooms, visitor center and miles upon miles of paths to explore. I usually take my bike and ride the trails, there are porta pottys along the route and places to stop take a break, look at the sites even a few spots to get in the water on a hot day. Lots of folks out and about families, pets older couples, bikes and walkers. Bring water, bug spray, and sun block. You can take advantage of the many other attractions at the park, kayaks, tours, rent bikes ect.

Long flat trail on the levee tow path is perfect for long walks, runs, etc. Much of area is shaded and you have the river on one side and the canal on the other. There is a kayaking company offering rentals and pickups at Lake Olmstead. There is also a bicycle rental company. The rates seem very reasonable.

By Kate Altick |

This is a great (and free) place for the whole family to enjoy! You can walk, run, bike, or just look at the scenery on the 7.5 mile long trail.

By Michael B |

Great place to visit, enjoy nature, and learn about the history of the Savannah River project. Great place to go for a bike ride, a walk, or even Kayak the waterway. Take plenty of water. Plenty of wildlife to see, including turtles, snakes, and alligators.

By Jim M |

As a bike riding person, the greater Augusta area is not a "bike friendly" place and has very few places to ride in relative safety. However, the Savannah Rapids Visitor Center is a great place to jump on the Augusta Canal. While fairly heavily used, I've always found the people to be friendly and always felt safe there. There are places where, I imagine, the view hasn't changed at all since the mid-1800's and there's a good bit of wildlife if you take the time to see it. Mostly shaded, it is a great place to cycle or walk. However, like everything else associated with Augusta, the closer you get to the city, the less safe, maintained, and cared for the trail becomes. Once you reach Lake Olmstead (about 5 miles), the trail becomes a one-lane trek through tall grass and then disappears altogether by the textile mills. I would not recommend anyone going past the Lake Olmstead bridge.

I try to take my little ones once a week to walk the trail. They love the theater stop with the spray tower. There's small waterfalls, wooded trails and a small memorial recognizing a couple servicemen. There's kayaking, u haven't tried yet but it is on my list. There are plenty of places to rent for parties and gatherings, from low-key to upscale. It was actually the venue for my wedding. Wonderful experience. I love the rapids.

By carlos m |

if you are ever in the area, have time, and have your walking shoes with you or on, you need to catch this scenary and outdoors scene.

By 2Grossman |

Walk down the canal road or ride bikes about a total of 1.2 miles. Just south of the I-20 overpass is a clearing on the left. There is easy access to the Savannah River. Bring a blanket ant towels. This is a wonderful place for a picnic or wading in the river.

By rcacres |

Greeted with a cup of cool water. Really needed it in this summer heat. Gracious and knowledgeable hostest.

Located on the north side of (and part of ) The Augusta Canal National Heritage Area, my son and I decided to go here when the Augusta Canal Discovery center was closed due to construction. There are several trails, but the Towpath trail starts at the Pavilion, and this is probably the best one if your looking for a bike trail. It's relatively flat, and about 7 miles long. A word of warning: the Pavilion sits on a very steep hill. On this steep hill is also the Parking Area. My advice is Do Not start riding your bike in the parking area. Walk you bike to the trailhead. There are also walking and hiking trails.
The scenery here is beautiful. You can also canoe or kayak in the canal. There is an access to the river where the water level is not too deep that is a great picnic spot.

By Patricia A |

Great facilities. Helpful staff in directing us to designated area. We were there for a birthday party with friends.

By Marie J |

Hot and steamy day but still a good walk, biking an option also. Plenty of people, playground equipment and room for children to let off energy. Beautiful view of the dam and rental kayaks right down the road.

By larryhX5930JK |

A must see for the first time visitor to Augusta GA. Have a picnic here or just a leisurely stroll. Don't forget you camera.

By judbag3000 |

This is a beautiful place. You can rent kayaks near the dam for use in the canal, or if you bring your own kayak and put in upstream of the dam you can get on the river. A few island up is Stallings Island where there are a few donkeys and goats, which is pretty cool. They’re feral, so don’t get too close to them, but if you bring apples they’ll eat them right out of your hand. There are tons of ticks there tho, and watch out for stinging nettles. Ran into some of both while walking to an abandoned cabin in the center of the island.

By Donna J |

This is a wonderful little gem that includes a lot of history about the Augusta, The Augusta Canal and Savannah River. It is located at the Savannah Rapids where one can catch the path for a bike ride or jump into a kayak and paddle down the canal....... bring some food and you have a wonderful day.

By Mimkay |

Great picnic area for kids or for couple very pretty and peaceful! Free to visit and rapids are so pretty great place to walk or ride bike with kids or as a couple

By j3spalding |

Whether you are an enthusiast or just getting started, this is the place with the most appropriate scenery. Kinda reminds when I would go to my sister’ In Chinatown NYC. You just waiting keep walking and walking and walking, until someone mentions Chinese food, then its on and popping.

By johnnied548 |

Visit in July. Long trails, great views of river and locks. Large waterfalls as you enter the park. Lock keepers home is open for viewing, they have cold water and air conditioning. There are also numerous items and small museum at this house. Be prepared to get hot during the summer, park does have mist sprinkler along the trail.

By LADYJ0531 |

It is so pleasant to visit Savannah Rapids. The visitors Center is nice but the real experience is walking along the Savannah River below the moss draped tress. It is a beautiful area to have a nice walk or picnic on the grass. This is my favorite place to visit in Augusta.

By Robert L |

This is one of the very few places in the Augusta, GA where someone can go walking or biking. The town is almost completely devoid of anywhere nice and safe to go walking or bicycling except for this location and a few other isolated places.

There is a very long (at least 7 miles one-way) trail, canoes you can rent and a bicycle shop.

This is a place that I can very easily recommend.

By Jeremy C |

This spot is definitely one of the most premier parks in the Augusta, Evans, Martinez area. The center is right at the mouth of the historical Augusta canal and parallels the Savannah River for some sweeping views. The best time to go is right at sunrise while you're on the trail and catch it rising over the river - a peaceful site.

As for the Center itself, the area is well-manicured and taken care of. The main building is big enough for a medium sized wedding party while the other surrounding buildings are useful for family reunions and BBQ's. The center has a wealth of information about the region and the history of the canal. Be sure to go by the old damn building with a lock so you can hang it on the rails.

This place is a must if you are an outside spirit!

By Sarah D |

I love just being able to walk along the trails in the morning. Its so relaxing peaceful! Also, the kayaking makes for a great day!

By shae n |

Savannah Rapids is on the Savannah River. It is beautiful. There are walking/biking trails between the Savannah River and the Augusta Canal. This is a popular area for joggers and bikers. The trail goes all the way to downtown Augusta. This is a popular spot for engagement/child/family pictures. There is a nice pavilion available for rent that hosts weddings, graduation parties, etc. People also fish here. Restroom facilities are available.

By Melissa B |

Spent a few hours taking photos, neat that people are starting a lock bridge. Great for photos and biking and a wedding venue.

By Kim B |

We have been going to the lock and dam for 15 years. My children have grown up walking up and down the canal. This is such a beautiful place for a picnic, a party, a run or bike ride. It is absolutely gorgeous when the azaleas are in bloom and the moss hangs from the trees. They have spent the last few years adding new parking, walkways, and pavilions, which have really added to the place. The playground is a little outdated, so we are hoping they will be adding that to the list of upgrades soon. You can now rent bikes and kayaks as well. We recently kayaked the canal and can't wait to do it again.

By Star E |

I cannot say enough GREAT things about this spot. It is one of the BEST places in Augusta in the spring, summer, and early fall. Running, walking, and biking the canal is always a joy every time I go. The scenery and openness of it all is spectacular. Biking, jogging, swimming, Kayaking picnicking, just walking around, cookouts with the fam...it's all to be had here. They even have VERY affordable bike rentals with well maintained bikes and friendly staff. I spend alot of time here every year. It really is one of my happy places, I LOVE LOVE LOVE this spot!

By cindymcd1988 |

Kayaking down the canal was the best, most relaxing, peaceful 2 hours!! You don't even have to paddle, the current can take you down, until you reach the lake. It's a private getaway in Augusta.

By kinzerkevin |

I love heading to the headgates!
This place is great, drop in a kayak, walking or biking along the canal trail.
Great fun, check out the visitor center when you stop in...the old headgates operator owned the building. It had a lot of history from the area...and worth checking out.

By tleeEvans |

Needs to see the caretakers cottage and browse around the canal. Wonderful place to walk or bike. Can also have a picnic at one of the tables. If you like you can kayak down the river or canal.

By Tom G |

Nice scenic trail. Great for kayaking great for biking. View of the river is amazing. Great place to walk for a date.

By Maryellen390 |

Savannah Rapids Visitor Center will saturate you with all the glorious elements of nature...earth...fire...air..water...space.
Spend an hour...spend the day and you will be refreshed from the tip of your toes to the top of your head.
This is Columbia County's little treasure given to it's citizens and visitors. What would you be willing to pay for this experience? Of course, it's priceless...how can you put a value on nature...so the gift is totally FREE!
Many late afternoons my family would grab a light dinner take it to one of the pavilions and enjoy the earth...fresh air...water....space...maybe even a little fire in the grill.
If you are a bicycler...a kayak-er...runner...walker...stroller...hurry...nature is waiting for YOU!

By evewest |

Whether just going for a walk or having a picnic this place is the place to go! I have been going here for several years now and I enjoy it each and every time!!!

By DANA W |

Good place to ride your bike or walk along the Augusta Canal & Savannah River on either side. You can rent a canoe/kayak or a bike right. My wife and I take our bikes up there at least twice a month on a Sat or Sun. Take some water and snacks too, because there are places to stop and enjoy the scenery along the way. There are informational markers to read as well. Wear sun block, bug spray and watch out for the occasional snake but it is worth the visit. The only draw back is the hill it sits on, so it may be a bit hard on those old bones and hearts, so take your time going up/down. Yes, there are stairs that lead to the Dam. Don't forget to bring a camera for pics of the Savannah River on the rocks and wear comfortable shoes. It is free to visit.

By Khammesf |

Small but loaded with history and a pls e well worth a side trip to. Views are very good, rapids especially, and lots of history to take in. Great place for a picnic lunch or casual stroll by the river. If you are near by, it won't take a large part of your day but well worth the drive.

By Jeremy C |

Very nice facilities near the Savannah River and Augusta Canal with walking trails and even the ability to kayak.

By travelwriter52 |

There was a lot to see. There were the original gates of the Augusta Canal, and the dam and even a small waterfall. You can rent bikes or watercraft, but the majority of people there were running or walking.

By Carla Z |

I spent my teenage years in Augusta, back then the Lock was an overgrown place where we went to make out & pick black berries. now 20 years later, when visiting Grandma, my Children always ask to go, My son & husband love to fish the canal or river. Many folks put locks on the gate above the locks to symbolize their union. It is a fun tradition. Depending on the season be prepared for the humid weather, mosqitos, anything a southern outdoor vienue has. Also prepare yourself to climb a hill back up to the parking lot from the river & canal. Canoes & bike rentals are avilable in season.

By LJClark34 |

This location has many amenities. There is a walking/bike trail, a playground, plenty of parking but most of all there is a beautiful pavilion for weddings, meetings, fundraisers any social function you can think of. The facility host a large upstairs ball room and smaller rooms and offices on lower level. There is a great view of the river from the upper level balcony.
Since I live in walking distance I find myself walking down the trail to the center as often as I can.
We are truly fortunate to have such a great location just a short walk away.

By RickBlanco |

Nice place to go with the Family, or to go for a run! Area seems to be clean and safe, beautiful historical place

By Melissa A |

This is perfect for a short or long bicycle ride, kayaking, or a simple walk beside the historic Savannah River. The path is dirt and gravel and mostly a flat surface. There is a mountain bike trail located along the path. Mile markers are located along the way to track distance. This site also offers picnic areas...reservations for large events and even an area for outdoor grilling. Some have held weddings & receptions here because of the beautiful background of the river and flowers.

By Deepslumber |

Came here after touring the Interpretive Center at Enterprise Mill so I was familiar with the history.

It was a beautiful day and the view of the river was marvelous. I enjoyed the walk along the river banks flanking the canal. You can walk or bike a long distance, but I only went as far as the first crossing downstream of the canal. It's a steep climb back up to the Visitor Center which is about 50 feet above the canal.

The location is somewhat concealed and a GPS would be a great help to get you there.

By Robert R |

Great place to run in the morning. Tree lined, dirt path with great views of the rapids and river. My family and dog love it!

By lynnedigieso |

Lovely for walking, biking, running. If you go very early in the morning, about 1 mile down if you listen and watch, you can see river otters at their morning feeding and playing with each other. Lots of pedestrian traffic most times of the day for solo women. Great place to walk dogs.

By Peggy T |

This is a very relaxing place and has a pretty view of the rapids. The staff were attentive. This is a good location just to take a walk or relax

By AugustaOnTheGo2010 |

wether your out for scenery, stroll, to get the kids out, walk your pet, gathering/wedding/cook out/photography a good place to visit. They even had indoor space if you need indoors.

By Ron D |

Another great place to see in Augusta! The visitors center is very informative and you can rent a bike at the Bike Peddler which is in the lower parking lot as you enter. The kayaking and fishing are fantastic

By bucwheat |

Nice place to visit on a weekend or holiday. Very scenic and a good place to ride bikes or just walk and enjoy the views.

By 2018Love2travel |

Stretch your legs for miles and take in the beautiful surroundings. Walk the dogs, ride bikes or rent kayaks for a few hours, you will not be disappointed here. Young children, teens, adults and senior adults all enjoy the walking trail and sound of the water. You may even catch wedding photos being taken while out on your walk.

By Healthy_Fit_Mama |

We love coming here for a nice, peaceful walk. The trail is well maintained and my kids enjoy the playground as well.

By jrn7tan |

Took out of town relatives for a day and picnic. Had a great time. We ok pictures for niece's senior pictures , they turned out beautiful. Great day for family.

By Barbara S |

Loved it!!!! I seen a lot of beautiful things. I wish I had a day to spend here. It was a great stop.

By Tony C |

My family an I have had many parties at Savannah Rapids Pavillion. The buildings and the grounds are kept perfect. There is always alot of people at the pic nik areas.

By Shane G |

So picturesque and on a beautiful day simply gorgeous. The small museum is nice and is filled with a lot of info. The hostess was just plain nice. The lock and spillway are just divine to visit and take in in person.

By Belinda W |

This is definitely one stop you shouldn't miss. The view if the river and canal is awesome! You can strol along riverside.

By 777jennya |

Love this Visitors center located on the Augusta Canal. Stop in for more information on other local activities and to view some of the history that has been found in the local area. Then step outside, rent a kayak or bike and take in breathtaking peaceful views of the Augusta Canal and/or the Savannah River.

By Alexander T |

Went here this morning and started my run down the hard packed dirt path. Plenty of shade and great views! There were also places to rent bikes or kayaks if you're more interested in that.

By james d |

very nice local park, super dog friendly, jogger friendly, walker, biker, kayaker friendly. Great place to get in a run on a very nice trail between the Savannah river and the man made canal.

By courtney f |

We came to walk and the views are great! The canal trail is flat and easy with bikes or strollers. The beginning has a nice park, bathrooms and tables to sit at. We enjoyed seeing the water and going off the trail a little.

By GreenEmbrace |

This is definitely one of our favorite spots to be in the CSRA. There are beautiful views on the river, a lot of history, awesome trails for biking or walking, a playground for the kiddos, and a great spot to put in for kayaking!! This is such a picture perfect area!

By brianbX5838WO |

We visit Augusta often, & this is the first time we went to the Savannah Rapids Visitor Center. Was beautiful! The trail was easy to walk & accessible to all. I LOVE water & the rapids didn't disappoint! The trees were gorgeous, too, w/the Spanish moss hanging from them.

By tleeEvans |

Nice little shop that has some good information about the area

It also is a nice area to sit and take is the views.

By _debbieann3729 |

This is one of the prettiest places to come for either a walk, run, or a bicycle ride. If you are lucky enough you will see otters playing on the water

By denlap |

We always enjoy a long walk at the Augusta Canal. The visitors center is very friendly and the is a lot to see. Columbia County has maintained these facilities in great condition. Great place to get some exercise, go for a bike ride, go for a picnic, go fishing, or go to just relax. Enjoy!!

By Redwood1313 |

Great place to walk, bike, take your dog or you can buy a loce, place it on the fence and after making a wish throw the key in the river. great for couples.

By cowtown036 |

one of my favorite places to go. use it for biking kayaking and just walking and taking pictures. i go there several times a month. you never know what or who you will see there. its a great place to kayak the canal in its entire length or to start the river and have a lil fun along the rapids til you hit the flatwater a few miles down.

By Tracy M |

I love walking and watching the water flow. Just taking a nice break. It is just beautiful. I was on a date so it did not go as I thought it would so I was not able to stay very long but just loved the short visit I had.

By BigWash |

This is a very iconic spot in Augusta.. We had never visited it before. My son loved it! We have recommended it to our friends to come see.

By Brandy W |

This happens to be one of my most favorite places in the CSRA. I enjoy the beauty of God's creations!!

By emailstephen |

How could a nice park like this get less than 5 stars?

This was my first planned stop following a 2-hour drive from (near) Atlanta. GPS took me directly to it, and I found parking (handicapped) easily beside the small, white Visitor Center. I tried to use the restroom, but it was locked and the Center was not open. Sigh.

I started my journey along the river just below the VC and wanted to head towards the covered bridge crossing the Savannah River. But I saw an event happening under a pavilliion so I climbed a hill to go around it. But I was stopped by the wedding party. Sigh. Here's the problem with that:

Of my own accord, I went around where the wedding was being held. Walking with a cane and a dog, I climbed the hill just for purposes of doing so. Rather than asking me to go yet another different route, I was simply told "no, you can't come through here".

Though frustrated and desperately needing a restroom, I DO NOT blame the wedding party or those who stopped me.

Of course I did not go anywhere near the celebration. I walked the other way... away from what I just drove 2 hours to see; away from the nearest restroom; and right back down a steep hill I just climbed. I got back in my car to seek a restroom, and found myself near the exit so, with other stops planned, I just left. Sigh.

It is my opinion that the Visitor Center should have marked off restricted areas that were rented to the wedding party. I was stopped at the top of the hill ABOVE the pavillion. They should also provide some indication for alternate ways to maneuver the park during such events. How much would an "arrow sign" or "this way please" cost?

I would have taken tons of pictures I'm sure, but instead, I have only one. Sigh.

So my star rating is directed toward the managers of the park, not the park itself - It appears to be lovely though I didn't see the vast majority of it. I have no plan to visit Augusta, GA. anytime in the future, so I guess it's just my loss. Sigh.

By Trent M |

Gave lots of information about the canal and local area. Great resource for places to visit nearby and throughout Georgia.

By jaimeelsabio |

A nice location to get away from the city and stroll along the river. One can get a nice view of the river and canal locks. I stopped by after work on a recent trip to Augusta and wish I had more time before it got dark.

By mthomasv |

Great park and trails. Wonderful venue for most any occasion. Has meeting rooms and small ballroom. Has a historic pavilion with outdoor area. Great historic location.

By ilpiccs |

Had to come by after work, so the visitor center was closed. But the grounds alone made it worth the trip from downtown Augusta. The grounds are beautiful and well interpreted, with great views of the rapids, the dam, the canal and the Savannah river. The antique structures with placards are equally impressive. Parking is ample and friendly.

Best of all is the Augusta Canal Trail. (long story short - I tried to run this trail downtown, and was told on multiple occasions that it was worth the trip to Savannah Rapids Visitor Center). The beauty, history, and great running experience offered by the Augusta Canal Trail must be experienced at it's trailhead at the Savannah Rapids Visitor Center. Since it was getting dark, I did a short 3 mile out & back run and enjoyed every minute of it - trail marked every .5 mile which was also very nice. I had planned to go back the next day to do a longer run, but the 'feels like' temperature of 98F kept me away. Hopefully next time.

Hats off to the park maintenance and trail maintenance teams - what a great place to visit!

By jp9c |

While visiting Augusta or getting acquainted with the local attractions, a must see is the Augusta Canal. The Visitor's center provides the basics of the Canal's history & other helpful info. Whether you walk along the canal, bike or rent a kayak this is the place to begin.

By Nancy D |

After taking a tour on the Augusta Canal on a Petersburg Boat we decided to drive to the Savannah Rapids Visitor Center and check out the head waters of the Canal. Very impressive and informative. What a huge undertaking the canal was by forward thinking business men at a time when it had to be mostly dug by manual labor.

By Colin R |

This is a must see if you are ever stuck in Columbia County. Very nice walking paths, water over the damn sounds very nice. Wonderful smells. Just wish there were more places like this. There are so few parks in Augusta. I lived in Savannah, Cincinnati, St. Louis, and Augusta. They all had parks available. There are so few here. This is one gem.

By Katie C |

Our family loves the Savannah Rapids Park in Augusta, GA. We will frequently visit this park to get some fresh air, exercise (walk or ride bikes), and just spend some time as a family. The route from this park to the clearing is 2.6 miles each direction which creates a perfect route for our family. The trail is often filled with others desiring the same fresh air, exercise, and time away so it is safe to walk/ride alone. The trail is wide enough to accommodate the volume of people that are typically found on the weekends. There is also grassy open areas along the trail so walking your dog is ideal. All in all we love this place and feel blessed we live so close. Trust me - you won't be disappointed. Especially if you like a little history lesson to go with your family time - this is a National Historic Landmark. Enjoy.

By Batt2 |

Had to kill some time and knew we were coming back to Augusta so checking out some activity areas. This place was very interesting with the historic value seeing how commodities were shipped up river via the barge canal. There was plenty of hiking, running, biking trails for everyone's taste. When we come back we will rent kayaks or paddle boards and cruise down the barge canal.

By YargLives |

The trail is about 3.5 miles in one direction but it does go past that down to Lake Olmstead Stadium. It's a nice little walk with lots of trees providing shade, and it has an area where you can walk down and get in the water if you like. It even has bike and kayak rentals for those not wanting to walk. My only complaint is when the weather is nice it gets extremely crowded.

By shushu32792 |

Lots to see and do. Very hilly so be careful as to where you park. Different areas at different levels. Great for kids, family even pets. Can rent a bike or Kayak down the river. Got a lot of exercise not only taking the trails but also the hills. Parked at 1st area without driving around, so again choose parking carefully. And the pathway as pictured what you can't see are all of the locks on the fence. Some locks were what looked like 1800's all the way to most modern. They have pavilion for parties and a platform for live performances and dancing. Between all of the things to experience was a gem in this visitor's opinion.

By John B |

The trail head goes all the way down to Olmsted Lake. There’s a little swimming hole that is fed by two waterfalls. It’s a local place with a swing rope to go out into the swimming hole. What a great place on a warm afternoon. It’s pet friendly so the dogs loved the swim!

By MariaD243 |

This is a great place by the water. The reason I only gave it 3 stars is because if your an older person with trouble walking, or if you have smaller children it can be very difficult to get around here because of the hills and step stairs.

By Frank G |

Stopped off here for an hour whilst passing through Augusta. Could have stayed for longer. Free entrance and lovely friendly staff at the visitor center. Note the visitor center closes at 4pm but the parking is open until dusk. Great photo opportunities of the river and the canal and the lock. Level walk (although we did not do much of it) and would be great to hire bikes (not far away) and cycle the trail. When we return to Georgia next year we will almost certainly do just that. Would recommend.

By hd0bs0n |

What a great spot! Great view! It was dusk when I arrived so I was unable to enjoy the trail but when I return, will definitely walk this and hopefully kayak down it! Also, if you are visiting with your love, be sure to bring a lock to lock your love. I have seen this in Paris on the bridges overlooking the Seine River and its a sweet way to memorialize you and your love.

By Patsy R |

Begin a bike ride, canoe trip or a jog. Or just a nice stroll. A bit of a climb and stairs to get to the river, but this old lady can do it. There is a tot playground and plenty of parking in a safe location. Enjoy a day outdoors in the country. Back pack a lunch. Rental are available. Have been often.

By TravelMom29212 |

Our family frequents this spot often! We love to go for walks together or I come with friends for a run. We have also had family photos down along the canal!

By ShaybaShayba |

Take a walk or just 'hang out' at the Savannah Rapids. The running, walking and biking trail is one of the most popular places in Augusta.

There are lots of trees...but still very hot in the summer...take plenty of water.

By IHMbiztravel |

As said in the title its a small center but very informative and the staff are very knowledgeable and more than happy to help with answer to all your questions. Great place to visit if you are close by.

By Monica_W1970 |

We parked at the Interpretive Center and biked to the Savannah Rapids. Unfortunately, the first few miles were nothing more than a skinny, dirt trail. It was difficult to follow as it crisscrossed over a number of bridges and wasn't well marked. Once we hit the paved path the biking was much more enjoyable. The views were beautiful. The old mill buildings were remarkable in how elaborate they were for their time. We liked that we had the canal on one side and the river on the other and that the majority of the trail was shaded. We suggest taking a few minutes to investigate the "love locks" that have been left over the years at the Rapids.

Our teens had no problem biking the 12 miles but we would recommend mountain bikes. One of us had a touring bike, which did not do well on the dirt trail and slight hills.

This is in a scenic area with water, history, trails, and a event center. The casual observer will enjoy a short walk and those with more time and explore more of the area. Nice side trip on a long journey.

By smithcbr600 |

Very peaceful and pleasant bike path. Great for the family. It ends at a historical building where you can turn around and go back to the visitor center.

By Donny W |

Friends took us here for a nice morning walk. Nice to see people enjoying the area by bikink, canoeing, walking and joging.

By cowtown036 |

great scenery. good place to bike, walk, or run. also a good place to start a kayak down the river or canal trip.

By thetravelingchristine |

The Savannah Rapids are a sight to behold... not only is there a bridge crossing over the beginnings of the Augusta Canal, but there is an entire stretch of the Savannah River that passes over a barrier and forms whitewater foam. On low flow days you can see more of the rock shelves in the Savannah River, there's usually some form of wildlife to be seen, wether Canada geese, ducks, herons or turtles. You can stroll, walk, run or bike the Canal Trail all the way to downtown Augusta, if you wish, or bring a picnic basket and find a lovely spot by the river. This is certainly one of the most picturesque places (and one of my favorites) in Augusta.
The Pavillion (event center) is available to rent and I've had the pleasure of attending several well orchestrated functions there, it's a beautiful building with very nice facilities.

By Big Rob |

While in Augusta, if you like walking or running outdoors this is the place for you. The trail is very clean and they have bathrooms as well on the trail.

By Monkey P |

Good walking trail along the river. There's a old mill and dam. There are fountains for people and dogs. There's a dock to deploy canoe / kayak. The canal is flat for a leisurely walk / bike. It goes on for miles as part of the greenway. But, most people will go from the visitor center and 1-3 miles and back.
Very busy weekends and holidays.

By Hugh45 |

Great place to spend some time outdoors and learn a little history of how a canal was built to help supply goods to Augusta using the Savannah river. Bring your bike or walking shoes and take advantage of the local trails in the area.

By drronline |

Walking the canal is one of the many serene activity opportunities in Evans. Whether you kayak, canoe, walk, jog, run, bike or sit, there is a peaceful countenance that travels along the canal along with the sound of the rapids. Seldom crowded, a great place for 30 minute lunch or an afternoon.

By Lori R |

I would recommend starting at the Savannah River Visitor center. I went to the park three times on my vacation to get some exercise and walk the dog. It went early in the morning and close to closing time. On both occasions the path was filled with friendly people of all ages. It was a wonderful place to walk and enjoy the view.

I enjoyed it so much that I decided to drive to the top of the path at the museum. This part of the trail starts in the town of August and takes you through some of the city streets. I arrived around 10:00am and walked about a mile before turning back. The few people I met along the trail were not there for exercise or site seeing.

I would opt for the boat tour, if you want to see the sites at the end of the trail.

By klapointe |

A very beautiful place to enjoy nature. We rented bikes from the Peddler shop and they were so friendly and helpful. The trail winds beside both the Savannah river and the Augusta canal. We saw so many beautiful birds, lots of geese, fish and turtles. The Spanish Moss was an unexpected addition to these beautiful trails. The biking is very easy, anyone can ride the trails. We want to return and ride all the way to downtown Augusta for dinner. This is one of the most beautiful parks I have visited in Georgia. It feels wild and rugged in places, even though it is very close to civilization.

By Tompant |

We love biking and walking to this area! It is lovely! Very interesting! The trail to this area is well used! The views along the trail tare varied and beautiful!

By grpGA |

Very pleasant and peaceful area of town. Nice view of the river and dam. Nice place to walk/ run/ bike and kayak.

By erinwantscoffee |

This place is a must see for anyone nearby. There is history, views, bridges, turtles, water, and biking and kayaking. It's a good place for a walk, a bike ride, a boat tour, a picnic, or just to explore. We took our teenagers and everyone had fun. It was hot though! Bring water.

By traceyd780 |

Very nice place to run or bike, with a bit of history. Felt very safe. Many people walking their dogs, groups and families were gathered along the river. Very family oriented.

By JCH86 |

Neat old building housing the gates to the Augusta canal. Beautiful hiking trails along the river and canal. We enjoyed it so much we went out there every day to walk and relax on our four day trip.

By Andrettisky |

Has so very much to do...even if you want do nothing but walking. Beautiful views of the river. Ellen is a lovely lady to deal with, as is the manager (can't remember her name? Debbie??), but most of the other ladies are just not as open and welcoming. a

By Ali P |

A great place if you just want to go for a run but also for history buffs to learn about this historic site. The dam is interesting and the bridge next to the gatehouse has many padlocks on it from visitors.
The view of the river is excellent. I've been on the trail while it was sunny and gorgeous but also while it was rainy and foggy. The scenery was stunning both times. The trail is very friendly for everyone. It's mostly compacted dirt with a few rocky places.
It's about 7-8 miles long with the Savannah Rapids Pavilion considered the start and it ends near downtown Augusta, I think (I've never done the entire thing).
There is also a company that does kayaking down the river there.
I definitely recommend for everyone.

By lindaivelisse |

Excellent for a Family walk or a bike ride. I enjoy the view and recharge my energy at that place. It's a nice place to read a book, so quiet and peaceful.

By Toy |

I really enjoyed it here it's great place to relax and kill time. I did little walking in nice cold breeze.

By hottiemail23 |

This place is absolutely breathtaking. Nice place for a walk or picnic. You could read a book it's so peaceful. There is also a little playground for a kids.

By Amanda P |

Looking to get information on Weddings, very nice customer service and very helpful on the information that I was seeking for an upcoming wedding ceremony.

By CR_Squared13 |

Wife and I finally managed to get over there and take a relaxing walk - despite it being fairly busy with a good amount of people walking and biking on the trail, it was easy to enjoy the scenery near the river! Looking into the canal was also a cool experience.

There's a reason it's so well-regarded among the locals. Definitely worth an hour or two.

By Carol L |

The Visitor Center (not pictured) is used by many groups for large events; the river views are lovely. There is a small cottage showing local information. This park is at the head of the Augusta Canal, and begins a nice walk/bike trail toward the city of Augusta.

By Julie S |

Wonderful place to walk, run, relax. People of all ages will enjoy. Lots of parking. Kid friendly but be careful around the water as you are walking along the Augusta Canal. The drop off is steep on the canal side and the river side as well. Beautiful scenery. Dog friendly. Bring a lunch and sit. Wheelchair friendly but there are some hills and the canal path is dirt, not paved. Definitely bike friendly.

By Al J |

Always enjoy going here, as they are very dedicated to providing services to the community. This is a place that most corporations use for get a way conferences. There's walking and bike trails along the river, with natural scenic views.

By Nicole R |

The view here is amazing and the walking path is very nice however getting from the parking lot to the path is a little difficult as the grade is very steep.

By calimarshal |

Want to do a few things around the Augusta area while my mother-in-law was visiting, and this one one of the places we went. Very pretty! If you just walk to the immediate areas, probably about a 20- 30 minute walk. The old building, not quite sure what it is, was cool, I just wish there was more information about it, and could look inside it better. Several scenic look out points. There is a place to rent kayaks and bikes, and right next to the bike shop is a little waterfall! And there is a small visitors center, which I got a lot of brochures for surrounding cities, and local areas from. Very nice visit.

By LynninNM |

It's shady, beautiful and the views are great. The walkways are wide, and except for a few occasional folks who don't understand how to talk quietly as others are trying to have a relaxing walk, it's perfect.

By TayloredTravels |

Love this place! Great for just taking a stroll or sitting and reading a book. I have had picnics here and also went kayaking here.

By Krista M |

We like to go here when my family visits. It is a beautiful place to walk by the water and take photos. We also enjoy the small playground.

By Alex R |

Well placed at the head of the Augusta Canal with plenty of maps and brochures. Staff were friendly and extremely helpful with respect to what is available in the city. Worth a visit.

By Clay |

Our family come here every Sunday, running down the canal. For people living in Augusta, this is one of the only places we can go for weekends

By traveldivaaficionado |

The walk around this area is special...beautiful wildlife is just the beginning. From the locks to the Innkeeper’s cottage, there is so much to enjoy...so worth your time.

By sj3cbrittons |

We came here to see more of the Savannah River but didn't realize that there was SO much history here. We walked and took pictures and talked - saw lots of Poke people walking by us which we thought was funny. It's a beautiful area - I loved seeing the locks on the fence across the dam and all of the names scratched into the wall. Found each of my kids' names there as well as some other funny words (e.g, "hoof-arted"). It was hot as hades when we were there but the trees over the walk provided much needed shade. You can rent kayaks there and see the river close up.

By Bingdale |

I loved walking along the canal and river. It is resplendent with trees, wildlife and beautiful scenery. There were people biking and walking and enjoying the nature. It is safe and a wonderful treasure right off of a busy area. Kayaks were being rented and enjoyed. I took great pictures and just enjoyed the pleasant atmosphere for FREE!!

By DebS |

I have been to the Savannah Rapids visitor center for events. One of my class reunions and it was just a wonderful place. There was a large room with a nice-sized dance floor and plenty of room for tables and for mingling. Also, my nephew's wedding was held there out on one of the pavilions with the rapids in the background and the reception was on the bottom level. Now the bottom venue is absolutely huge!! It's a wonderful place for an event. We also visited the center for a kayaking trip upriver. It's a beautiful place that's right on the river and has room for more than 1 event at a time.

By GSDodgen |

The place has really been built up nicely. Just for a walk along the canal or for an afternoon of fishing, it can't be beat.

By Prasanna A |

It's an awesome place to enjoy the river views. The walking/biking path is in the middle of the canal and the river. So you can enjoy both views from time to time.

By Kadensaunt |

Stop by here on my way out of town. Headed to South Carolina to see waterfalls and made this my first stop of the trip. They were a lot of runners here and a lot of beautiful scenery

By Kevin J |

The staff and facility are both excellent. We have spent many afternoons as a family visiting the are and VC. Here is a hint: Take a break from the trails on hot Georgia summer days by visiting the VC and enjoy the arctic cold AC.

By Jack P |

Nothing that spectacular about the scenery but it is a nice walking trail. There is picnic areas that you can take a lunch and eat. I wasn't sure about the safety of the walk as I wasn't that familiar with the area but otherwise we enjoyed the fresh air and the visit.

By Shelley G |

We stopped at the visitor center in Augusta, just over the line into GA and asked about something to do in the area and we were directed to the Savannah Rapids Visitor Center. We took a very easy walk along the Savannah River. If you would like to just take a leisurely stroll this is for you. You can walk as far or as little as you would like. We saw turtles sunning themselves on logs in the river. I saw a blue Heron.

By Cindy F |

Take a bike, a hike, walk a dog, or just sit on a log. LOL It's a beautiful place to get some exercise or just peace of mind. The path is wide enough for a vehicle and the Augusta Canal is on one side and the Savannah River on the other side. The rapids are definitely a photo op and a few other places along the way. It's about an 8 mile trail and I don't think I've ever not had another person in sight. Usually very crowded near the visitors center and chances are you will see a policeman or two along the way. Best of all it's FREE!

By Don C |

I walk or run the canal several times per month. It is a great place for exercise and people watching as well as learning history of the area. Everyone is very friendly.

By I_Like_Cats_12 |

Recommend going for a nice walk. Take a hat and wear sun screen. It gets very hot and humid. Nice for a couples walk.

By Michael D |

Just went running at the Rapids area today and walked into the visitor's center for the first time. Folks were super friendly and willing to talk about kayaking and canoe rentals as well as some of the other activities and history of the area. Well worth the stop.

By Something Tookish |

At the east end of the Evans to Lock Rd there is a park built around the headwaters of the Augusta canal. Plenty of parking here. You have the historic structures of the canal locks there which you can walk across to view the Savannah rapids and get on the Canal Trail. The trail can be taken clear into the city center if you wish to walk 7 miles, most people walk to the I-20 overpass and back. The park has kayak and bike rentals and a small playground. There is also a visitors center and pavilions for rent. Most folks come to walk, run or bike on the wide, beautiful and peaceful canal trail. A few come to fish in the canal. The entire family will find something to enjoy here.

By drronline |

The wedding was at Wesley UMC, and the reception was at the SRVCC. Weather was great, upper room was filled with about 200 people, but did not seem crowded, and the sunset back over the river offered an incredible view. Staff seemed attentive and responsive. All in all, a great place for a large reception.

By JahRee |

Has walking/jogging/bike trails to enjoy. Also can rent kayaks and enjoy the water. Great place to enjoy nature.

By Tonya Lewis |

Went in to find a map. The lady was super friendly and asked questions and had a lot of suggestions for future outings in the area.

By Dave K |

One of the best areas in Augusta to spend a few hours outdoors. Easy path for walking, running, or biking. Bike and kayak rentals available.

By Becki C |

We happened upon this place by accident on our honeymoon and I'm sure glad we did. What an amazing site with a rich history. Anyone looking for a wedding or picnic venue, check this place out! I unfortunately got sick and we weren't able to spend a lot of time there, but when we move down there we definitely will.

By CHARLES M |

I took my kids kayaking there. They enjoyed it for the first hour and became too tired to row afterwards. Rental cost is not too bad if you go during the week:$10 more for weekend rentals. They do honor rain out days if you go and it begins to start lightning. I went on Friday, got notice of lightning after arrival, and was given the weekday rate for Saturday due to storm coming in.

By Graham W |

Very old, but unbelievably well kept. Amazing property that was hosting a wedding on the day I went. Amazing views.

By Augusta_Chuck |

The Savannah Rapids Visitor Center and surrounding area is a great place to walk. You can actually walk or bike all the way into downtown Augusta from the visitors center. Bike and kayak rental is available. Nice pavilions for picnics too. Columbia County govt. has done a wonderful job with recent upgrades to this beautiful spot along the Savannah River.

By Mehmoodmewat |

This is wonderful place to take a walk.Parking is convenient and walk down has comfortable approach.Nice bridges allow walks on both sides.
Nice to observe the rapids and water streams.
Worth take nice walk!

By Two Lane Adventures |

We walked the trails, crossed the canal and watched the water flow from the Savannah River into the canal. Was it super exciting, no ... but thinking about how and when it was made and the energy that is water created and still creates is amazing!

By madeyemacy |

I have lived in Augusta all of my life and the canal is one of the most peaceful spots. If you're looking for exercise this is a great place to run/bike/walk/kayak. Great to take a special someone with you and make a date of it.

By Rebecca R |

I was told to go see this by my brother who lives in Augusta, and I was not disappointed! The views are amazing! Take the time to visit the visitor center, the curator that was there when I visited (Kim) was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the head gates and dam. While the whole thing is pretty much kid friendly, there are some spots that if you are kid free you can really enjoy...I say kid free because it involves climbing down some steep embankments. But wear some shoes and some clothing you don't care getting a bit dirty and you can find some photogenic gems among the trees. Also head up to the pavilion, where a beautiful overhead view of the rapids can be seen...and I think the best time to see from here would be winter because the leafless trees would allow for an astonishing panoramic view!

By JCJCNGA |

The area is very nice, quiet, and beautiful. There are play areas for kids. walking & bike paths around the canal and across the dam, with rapids off in the view. Great picture opportunities

By AussieStew_13 |

Wow, what a breathtaking place. History, nature, exercise, and scenic all at once.

I loved discovering the history, the ingenuity, the organisation that saw these canals and river locks be built. It's a beautiful place, and was being heavily used by people of all ages, locals and tourists alike.

By Tootallal |

Set overlooking the Savannah River, this place is beautiful in any season. During the fall there are fabulous leaves and of course the river rapids. During Spring the new blooms. I meet here monthly with a small group. Services and sights are well done.

By Frank_Rost |

I love exploring historic sites and also enjoy spending time in nature. Savannah river has many stunning views to offer and this is certainly one of them. There are several walking trails along the river and the canal. Also it is possible to rent a canoe or kayak and explore the canal that way.

By John B |

Situated just outside Augusta this is a great place to visit. The scenery here is wonderful. Great place to hike, run, cycle or kayak. Well worth a visit.

By Jim V |

Can't say enough about this place. Scenery, walking trails, historic structures, and a photographer's delight.

By Anne P |

We spent a couple of hours here. It is fascinating to see the river split off into the canal and how powerful it can be. The Riverwalk begins here and heads to downtown Augusta. You can do a loop from the pavilion area around the canal and then back up by the visitor center. There is a bike station and kayak rentals and a launch site there. The visitor center had just been painted so everything was kinda' a mess but the lady was very helpful and gave us a few pamphlets that helped us with some questions.

By Restless Traveller |

It is about 20 minutes by car, but it was very pretty and very rural. Great chance to walk around before the ironman race. We took a boat tour that was very pretty as well. No shad on the boat though so be ready to cook!

By DeniseM_NC |

Very interesting! Nice views of the river, falls, and a visitors center too. Check the hours on the latter!

By Courtley |

A lovely piece of paradise along the Savannah River at Evans, GA. Great for running, hiking or taking a quiet walk along the banks of the Savannah River.

There are kayaks for rent, lots of little areas for BBQ'ing or picnics- under cover and with power. Plemty of parking. Nice little visitor centre and functions area as well.

By mburdsal |

This was our first time to the Rapids Park and it was beatiful, well kept treasure for all to share.

By tdw295 |

An excellent hike between the river and the canal. Very scenic. Pathway is level so makes for easy walk.

By artist0072016 |

The Savannah Rapids is really a nice place to walk, take bike rides or canoe/kayak. You can spend 30 minutes or hours depending on how far you want to walk, run or ride. Lots of parking. Family friendly, clean. Only drawback is lack of bathrooms along the trails. It's not advisable to use the port-a-potties.

By rhaltn56 |

Stopped here to check it out, was greeted by a lady who was very friendly and told us some history and things to see in area. Nice area to walk, and interesting time

By BhupeshAB |

This was my second visit to the Rapids.
Good place to visit & relax after a day of Hard work. I never had a chance, however I would highly recommend visiting in the Morning hours.

By jphillips157 |

Savannah Rapids is at the head gate of the Augusta canal. There is no better place to walk , jog or ride a bike. it's got the Savannah River on one side and the Augusta Canal on the opposite side. Pet friendly also and you can canoe or kayak down the canal if you want. Great family place with a park, playground

By tajo123 |

The most important part of the walk between the Savannah River and the Augusta Canal is the towpath on the raised levee, originally designed for the mule drivers who towed the barges up and down the canal.

Whether you begin your walk or bike ride at the fascinating Augusta Canal Discovery Center where the canal intersects with Broad street, or at the Savannah Rapids Visitor Center on Evans to Lock Rd, the canal offers a well-kept path. Some sections are paved.
If you walk from one cultural building all the way to the other, you will cover 7 miles.
Print out a map at the Augusta Canal site and mark out what section you might like to hike or ride. There is also pretty good signage on the trail.
It's worth bringing a great picnic. Call ahead to the amazing Calvin’s Roasted Fish and Salads on Broad St and explain what you want. There are good spots to pause along the path, whether at Mill Village, or near Lake Olmstead, at the waterfall, the Pump Station, or my favorite, the delightful picnic area about 1.5 miles up from the Pump Station. Just be careful of the river - no wading.

2Grossman: THERE IS NO SWIMMING OR WADING IN THE SAVANNAH RIVER near Augusta.
With awful regularity some poor young soul drowns in the rapids that course from the Piedmont to past the city of Augusta.

By Steve W |

Vicky was on duty at the visitor's center when we visited. She gave us lots of important history and information about the Augusta Canal; she also gave us some tips for places to eat in Augusta. Thank you for all your help, Vicky. I walked the paths along the canal in order to get a better view of the locks. The complex is a very impressive piece of engineering, and an important contribution to the history of canals in the United States. I highly recommend visiting the site when you are in Augusta.

By Lisa F |

Such a hot day but so lovely to go and visit.....after seeing the canals all weekend and learning about the history of them, etc. it was great to go and see the headwaters and read up on them ...and then the best thing ever.... to go into the visitors center... and have a lovely lady hand us a cool glass of water!! The visitors center used to be the lockkeepers home and it was great to see the furniture and the way it was decorated, etc. The waters were great to see.... sort of a must do on your visit!

By V W |

We decided to go to Savannah Rapids since we both love the water. Listening to the water and relaxing in the sun. Very peaceful and quiet. Tranquility and serenity. We enjoyed it. The water fall being a focal point. Awesome. We need to visit more often.

By jjsnork |

This is really a great place as long as parents keep track of their little ones. They have a little bridge you walk over that has hundreds of locks on it placed there by couples in love. It's very special. We went on a Sunday and there is a great information area with tons of old and new info. For example, I used to live in Orlando, but i never knew Martin Marietta was a real person who did real things in and around Evans, Georgia. The waterfalls, although not towering, are very powerful and beautiful. If the little kids have never seen waterfalls before it's a great place. You can even see the old equipment that was used to control the locks. There is a nice trail to walk or jog, just keep your little ones by your side. All-in-all it was a great place to walk, sit and have lunch, then walk back. As a side note, there was a small wedding taking place while we were there.

By Giselle B |

We visit Savannah Rapids at least 2x/ mth. It is always relaxing to walk around and take in the sounds and sights. In warm weather do look out for snakes on the trail.

By MJ D |

I would definitely recommend a walk through the Savannah Rapids Visitor Center. It was beautiful and the sound of the water was so nice. I heard tell tale of Alligators in the river and in and around the banks. People we were visiting told us if every kayaking the river to remain in the moving water, and not in the still water on the sides, where the Gators hang out! Fun Fact! Enjoy!

By Norman E |

Well the Savannah Rapids is located in Columbia County and it's a beautiful place to go to wind down and enjoy what nature has to offer. It's amazing when your at the rapids you can experience the crossing of the Augusta Canal and the Savannah River.
1. Take plenty of pics
2. You can rent kyaks and canoes
3. Great 5 mile bike trail
4. The trail ends or begins at the Kroc Center in Richmond County
5. If your riding or running on a hot day there is a cooling station where you can cool down with a refreshing mist of cool water
6. Bird watching

Overall this is a must for you nature hikers, runners, bikers or just relaxing watching the water.

If your on the trail early in the mornings you might catch the sight of some of the wild life that live along that trail
Wild turkeys, otters, rat snakes, dear and many different species of birds

I have traveled this trail many of times and ever time I'm there I experience something new

Have a beautiful day at the Savannah Rapids

By brdhouse |

We love living so near this trail and use it weekly. Many things have been added over the years. Mostly we are walking the dogs or biking. Now you can rent bicycles or kayaks. Good areas to rent for weddings, family reunions, birthday parties, etc. Love the views of SC over the river and when biking having water views,on both side of the path.

By NM75 |

I’m so glad that I chose this place over other parks that I’d read about. I enjoyed walking around the river- it was clean and I felt safe. It’s a nice walk overlooking the river and rapids. If you like nature (or have a dog), great outdoor activity.

By Ashley D |

We attending a wedding here this past weekend and it was stunning. I will stay they need more handicap access. The pavilion by the water only has 2 handicap parking spots and they path to the pavilion is rocky and very difficult for wheelchairs.

By susan0522 |

We enjoy going to see the water and walk the trails. The kids like that there's a playground although it doesn't have a ton of equipment. Trails are dirt or gravel, so keep that in mind if it has recently rained or you plan to bring a stroller.

By rkwonder |

I have visited here many times. The views of the Savannah River and the Augusta Canal are amazing. Birds frequent the area, biking trails and kayaking are plentiful on the canal. Many popular areas for portraits to be taken

By v edens |

Interesting historical place, amazed how they were able to build and how fast. The people at the site are very helpful and take time to explain layout,

By kellyhovey |

i would recommend its very nice and in a good area so you dont have to worry much about safety and a great place for get info

By Saeed A |

Very good place for you and your family or friends
You can stay 3 hours walking or riding a bike or take your lunch

By Rad D |

This turned out to be the largest and best preserved canal structure complex of any we have seen for a canal of this size. We have seen a great many canals, from some long-abandoned and now no more than mere ditches, to some as amazing as the C & O (which is the most stunning canal domestically that we have ever visited). We would have come here anyway because I knew my wife would enjoy it, but we also are very active in geocaching, so wanted to find the ones in this area, too, while we were here. Glad we did!

By mlorahga |

Located at the Headgates of the Augusta Canal System, this visitor center is a fun way to get an overview of all the activities the system has to offer. You can also learn about the history of the area.

By sm g |

This is an awesome place to go for biking, walking, jogging, fishing, and kayaking. They even have bike and kayak rentals there. Beautiful scenery. I wish the canal path had lights though.

By Judy K |

The lady there was so helpful in what to do in the area. We went down to the locks and dam and also walked along the river observing and enjoying the trees with their so famous moss on them. They were preparing for a wedding. It took us a while and a few wrong turns to find the Visitor Center but was well worth the trip.

By Dale K |

When you're in the area this is a must see. Absolute beautiful area with lots of history around. Give yourself plenty of time when you go as the scenery is so beautiful.

By Nicole N |

We stopped here after visiting the Canal Discovery Center. I'd recommend it in this order so that you have the historical context of the canal...it's very interesting! It's a beautiful walk and there is also a visitors center with all the information you could need for exploring the rest of Georgia. The lady there was very friendly and treated us to ice cold water which hit the spot after being out in the sun all day.

By HappySassyGalSTL |

We ended up here kind of serendipitously with an hour to walk and play. Just beautiful- old locks with a path going between the river and the canal. In the short span we walked, we saw ducks, turtles, a lizard and even a snake, which was trying hard not to be seen. So worth the time and so good to be outside.

By backhoe409 |

13 very good friends from church took a field trip to the Augusta canal boat tour today. The main canal area was closed due to work being done on the downtown area. The boat tour is temporarily rerouted to this area until the repairs are finished within the next month. Our guide was well informed and made our trip interesting. We learned alot about the history of the canal and saw many different types of wildlife. We had a great time, don't forget a hat and sunscreen. They did provide umbrellas for the sun. Since we did not get to see the main downtown area our tickets were discounted. Lots if fun, give it a try.

By 411Shirley |

While visiting some friends from the local area, we visited the Savannah Rapids Visitor Center and the surrounds. What a peaceful place! Great for wandering, jogging, bike riding, dog walking, or just sitting and enjoying the beautiful view. A variety of trees, birds and other wildlife grow/reside here. Be sure to walk across the canal at the locks, study the combination and key locks that have been placed on the railings, enjoy the stroll along the river side, and more closely examine the rushing stream before entering the Visitor Center. A relaxing, educational, historic area!

By Steve W |

We thought that we would pay a visit today. The lady in the visitors centre was very enthusiastic but that was about it. No real views and nothing else to do but our expectations were possibly greater with coming from the lake district in England and this attraction having a high rating. It could be better in the summer.

By rick_carnall |

This nature area is an excellent place to go walking, running, cycling etc. A great place to relax and unwind, especially with the family, a great place to spend a couple of hours away from the hussle and bussle of Augusta.

By Chloe M |

It's a great tourist place for families and friends the fresh air is great on spring days as a family

By Donna B |

Makes for a nice day trip with beautiful scenery and lots of walking trails. There is also a lot of historical monuments, artifacts and buildings on site.

A wonderful place to walk, jog, hike or bike ride. I love coming here. Looking out on the water as I walk makes me happy and is so peaceful. I always feel better after coming here. A place like this could easily become littered or polluted if the people who walk there weren't diligent to keep it clean. Also, kudos to those who keep it up. It's a nice, clean trail. There's also a spot to rent Kayaks for a decent price. Love taking my dogs and kids here. People bike, run, or walk. I enjoy this part of Augusta, Georgia.

Wonderful Views of the River. Plus lots of areas to walk and picnic with playgrounds for the kids and interesting sites to see. Spend and afternoon with your out of town visitors. They will enjoy it.

This is a nice place to have a picnic. I actually went for a walk with my family after a wedding, we went to. Very pretty walk.

Very nice visitor center with a VERY informed docent. The trail provides numerous views of both the Savannah River and the canal. The "tow path" is a wonderful place to walk, run, or bike. There is a place to rent kayaks for the canal and also a bike rental.

My wife and I visited Savannah Rapids after visiting the Canal Interpretive Center in Augusta. We wanted to see where the canal starts - branching off the Savannah River. We enjoyed it so much, we went back two more times. The walking trail (towpath) makes for easy walking and we found it to be more quiet and relaxing than the riverwalk in Augusta. You do have to drive out a ways from downtown area, but we found it to be well worth the drive.

This area features many concrete walking trails, gorgeous scenery, completely free of charge. One particular parking lot is located on a steep hill, which may provide difficulty for some to reach the walking trails. Great for strollers. A particular part of the bridge reminded me of Paris, with the locks. Overall, it is a nice getaway from the city.

Nice visitor center to get acquainted with some local history of the Augusta Canal. Great host on duty to welcome you and answer any questions you may have.

We visited late in day, but lady at visitor centre was a font of knowledge of surrounding area. Must see and fab walk along the canal

Very nice facility. This is appropriate for all ages. There are helpful people on site that will be able to assist you. Call for more information.

Beautiful area for friends and family. The trail is, for the most part, hard packed dirt. The trail narrows and widens in various areas. There are picnic tables and large rocks to sit on near the water part way down the trail. The trail is well marked and well traveled. The scenery is gorgeous. The only downside is, when biking, you have to be aware of various ruts and holes in the trail. Also, the trail would not be a lot of fun after a large rain.

Their is a beautiful view of the savannah river here. A place for family to enjoy or for you to just think in nature. It's a nice place that every Augustan should take a look at in their free time....

Great place for a nice stroll or to go for a jog. Lots of trail areas. Suitable for nature watching and bringing along the dog and or the family. Interesting history and very scenic area. Free. Also has Kayak rentals on the river and fishing areas if you are interested.

I go for a walk almost every day along the canal/Savannah. It's one of my very favorite places to be. The visitors center is small but very friendly.

I usually take my 2 dogs there for a walk or jog. Everyone has their pet on a leash so even dogs that are not dog friendly are under control. We love it there and visit it at least 3-4 times a week.

You can float down the canal on a kayak, cycle, jog or walk this park. You can bring your own or rent what you need. They have excellent facilities you can rent for receptions and other events, with great water views of the Savannah River. My company recently held a two day offsite there and it was very nice!

This is a fantastic place to walk, run and bike. Always safe and dog friendly if on a leash. Beautiful, gravel and dirt path along the river. Plenty of space for bikers to zip by. One of my favorite places to run! The restrooms are always clean, too!

Beautiful trail along the river for walking, bike riding. It’s five miles from parking lot to visitors center, and five miles back . A good ten mile hike. Portable toilets and clean bathrooms along the way! Go for it!

This is a very nice area for hiking and bike riding. The old canal adds a nostalgic charm to the area (in my opinion). The welcome center itself has some old artifacts for exhibition of Georgia's history.

As a history buff, I was totally fascinated with seeing how the locks worked though the displays. I especially loved walking the path on both sides of the canal and seeing the river on the other side of the lock.

Nice quiet walk along the Savannah River and Augusta Canal. Lots of people walk with their pets, ride bikes, jog and rent kayaks going down the gravel path towards Downtown Augusta. There are historical and informational markers on the path to read. A few places you can sit and watch the ongoing activities on a nice sunny day. Bring a camera to take pics of the Rapids. Bring good walking or jogging shoes. The Visitor Center is a bit hilly, so pace yourself. Ensure your bike is in good condition, you can get it checked out at the local bike shop that is located near the small bridge that crosses over the canal. The bike shop sells some small refreshments too. Have fun....

I highly recommend this place for both kayak and bike rides. There is a terrific overlook to the Savannah River, then you can take either a kayak ride or bike trail to Augusta. Several places to stop along the bike path for picnic or scenic views.

A very scenic and safe place to walk, bicycle, jog, or just view what is referred to the rapids of the Savannah river. A shaded dirt road nestled between the canal & the river will lead you from Evans approximately 6-7 miles all the way to Kings Mill in downtown Augusta.

I did the kayak trip to downtown Augusta. Great service, lots of things to see and an easy paddle. I recommend this if you have a few hours.

Great views of the spillway, nice trails for walking, paved and unpaved. There are great buildings for meeting/parties. Could be beautiful for a wedding. There is a covered BBQ pit built into one of the pavilions. A must-see!

This is a beautiful place to walk and had many hidden paths and stairs for the more adventurous person as well. I suggest bringing lots of water because it gets very hot here!

We went to the Savannah Rapids visitor Center and then walked the Augusta canal trail. Walked 2 miles south and then back 2 miles. The total distance can be as much as 8 miles on this trail. Lots of wildlife and history as you walk this trail. Good place to get away from the business of life.

What a great find in Augusta. We enjoyed seeing the rapids, the lock bridge, the setting here is just beautiful. We walked the canal trail out two miles and back. The river and the sights were lovely. The flowers and nature were just coming to life and it was so great to see. Folks were kayaking in the river. The nearby path was nice and flat and level. We did see a park ranger patrolling the area. We had such a great day out in nature and would have stayed longer if we had the time. If I get back to Augusta I will go walk the canal trails again. Worth the visit.

Beautiful river and Augusta Canal Gates. You can take kayaks down the canal to Augusta. Nature blooms in so many ways on the trip!!! Great place to relax and experience nature.

A great way to spend time on the Savannah River. Lots to do for all ages including trails for walking/biking, kayaking, picnic area, fishing. Free parking as well.

By Mary S |

Spectacular view of the Savannah River and the beginning of the Augusta Canal. Great place to go picnicking, biking, hiking, kayaking, or just go for a leisurely stroll! Pavilions available to keep you out of the sun while picnicking. Learn more about the river and the canal and its importance to the city at the Augusta Canal Discovery Center.

By J R |

If you plan to ride the river boat it no longer picks up on the river front stop behind the Marriott! You have to go down the street and we missed it pulling off:(. The signs need to be changed. My return visit will be to catch the boat

While visiting friends who live nearby, I recently walked down to the Savannah Rapids park and visitor center and enjoyed a 5+ mile walk on the banks of the canal. A great spot for walking, running, biking -- pretty much any outdoor activity. Bike rentals available on-site as well as picnic facilities.
