interesting natural wonder

By Kevin H |

We enjoyed our time visiting, but were disappointed through raised expectations based in the descriptions friends provided. Unfortunate but still a great vista and a very good place for a picnic and a good walk.

Nice falls

By Skip a |

We hurriedly drove out to Sitting Bull Falls and were fortunate to get in and see the falls before closing time.....it is about an hour drive from Carlsbad. It is worth the drive and once there a short hike to the falls.

Pretty easy access to the site

By Bronkogb |

It is a little bit of a longish drive to get to the trail, but it was worth it, and the hike was on the easy side. It is worth the trip.

Hidden Paradise

By Nikki W |

If you have the patience to venture past the desert terrain and explore the rode less traveled, then you may find this to be as amazing as we did!

Words and reviews cannot portray the spiritual connection felt in this paradise. We went late in the day and after the folks with kids and the other tourist departed, we were able to fully enjoy the space.

A gorgeous oasis!

not worth the time to get there

By Daniel G |

We drove for what seemed like forever on this windy back road that barely 2 vehicles can pass on before. We actually turned onto the road that leads to the falls, and again that was another windy almost single lane road when we finally got to the falls there was no place to park except back out on the road. It seems the locals have taken over the place. If you wanted one of the cute little buildings with a picnic table in it, forget it the locals had taken them over. we walked to the falls I could barely believe my eyes. There's a little trickle that comes off the top of this plateau and forms a small pool at the bottom hardly worth the effort to get in there, but it seems the locals have a great time swimming in this greenish colored water
There was no attendant on duty and everything was on the honest system to pay the entry fee. I didn't see anybody paying the place is neat and clean, but if you are looking for a real waterfall, this is not it save the fuel and wear and tear on your vehicle.

Dessert Oasis

By Sally B |

Man- we weren’t really thinking about coming here but heard from another guy at the Cavern how awesome it was! I am SO GLAD we came! The road to get here is very rough- any vehicle is fine- but no shoulder & twisty/awkward.

There is $5 parking fee and a nice bathrooms and nice covered picnic tables with grills. Great place for lunch. The paved hike is very easy and short- wheelchair accessible I believe. There is another trail that is steep and not paved that points to the top of the falls- we did this first but probably could have skipped this- only do this if you want to swim in one of the upper pools. The falls was like an oasis in the desert! You can swim at the base or at one of the many little pools around- explore more than just the paved path- you’ll see so many cool surprises. I wasn’t intending to get in but I did- bring a change of clothes! Wear sturdy water shoes or grippy sandals- like keens

Great on a Hot Day

By Sarah M |

I would give Sitting Bull Falls a 5 star. Although parking can be an issue on weekends during the week it’s not too bad. The volunteer Rangers are working hard to meet this problem too. About 10 years ago my husband went up here for a picnic at the end of the day. This month we went back with our grandson who really enjoyed it. I would recommend bringing a swimsuit just to be on the safe side. This place also provides picnic tables (most are covered) and hiking including minor rock climbing. It also has restrooms. One needs to be careful as there are no lifeguards.

Desert gem

By gingerb |

What a beautiful oasis in the desert! We went the day after the holiday weekend, and we literally had the whole place to ourselves! It was a pleasant surprise to find such a well-done site. The picnic buildings built by the CCC were amazing. A credit to the men who worked there. The walk to the falls is short and easy. It was easy to image people in the past living and seeking out this desert treasure. Beautiful drive with an even more beautiful end.

Gem hidden in the desert

By mrsmcgill |

This is an amazing place to visit for the day. As you drive up to Sitting Bull Falls, you will never expect what you find by the surrounding country.

Great place to picnic and explore

By Dogpilot |

Sitting Bull Falls has some really neat covered picnic tables. (see pic) The falls themselves are pretty amazing being that your out in the high desert. Your allowed to swim at your own risk if you want in the pools and I saw some that were doing just that. They lock the gate @ 6pm to protect the wildlife that utilizes the water to sustain life. A nice little day camp or you can dry camp nearby.

Awesome Tarantulas!!

By Skiers4Ever |

We visited Sitting Bull Falls on a cool cloudy day and enjoyed the Falls from the viewing deck and below. Hiked up high to the top as well and thought the views from that angle were cool. Fairly easy hike up and worth the trip.

But the most memorable experience would have to be meeting Mike the Tarantula and we also saw another one over twice his size! First time seeing Tarantulas in the wild. Really great experience!!

Fun time for a few hours

By lewis |

Went out to the falls. Weren't sure what to expect. Nice place. Easy access to the falls. Pretty clean water. They had very little rain so falls were not real big but still pretty. Probably a lot bigger after some rain. I'd recommend for couples and families. There were families there with kids and teenagers and they seemed to be having a really good time in the water. We watched except for getting our feet wet. Too cold for us.

Amazing

By davidiseye |

Take the paved road by the living desert entrance 2x faster. Takes forever to get there but worth it. Bring shoes for water. Not sharp but do hurt tender feet. Cool clear water.

Fun afternoon

By Richard S |

As others have posted, this falls are quite a bit out of the way. Hwy 409 was washed out quite a bit but we made it through. It was a holiday weekend so it was a little crowded when we got there so we had to park at the lower parking lot and hike about 1/2 mile up the road to the park. All that said, once we got to the falls it was very enjoyable. The pool at the bottom of he falls is great for wading or swimming. There is a lot of lower pools to explore as well. The park is clean and well maintained. Go and have fun.

Best place in the area!!

By dotc22 |

This is a desert oasis! Long drive, but absolutely worth it! Pack a picnic lunch or use the charcoal grills at the park. At least 20 covered Picnic tables. You will need bug spray, sun tan lotion, water shoes and clothes to get wet in. And dry hiking shoes If you want to climb to the top of hills. A great family place and bring your dog!!

Worth the drive!

By OnAir475082 |

We didn’t find the drive to be too long, scenery was interesting and nice. The falls were blowing in the wind but so beautiful. The area has a peaceful and relaxing feel, totally worth the drive. Take a picnic, the park has a very large picnic area before the very short and easy railed walkway up to the falls. Not much water falling, but can see numerous areas of dry falls, probably spectacular when they are flowing.

Paradise in the Desert

By Brittney M |

This hidden gem is a definitely a paradise out in the desert. Oh no, this is no mirage, there's truly water falls here. This nationally mantained park is really nice and perfect for a family outing, or really, any outing. Especially during the Spring and Summer months. They're made it to where the bottom part of the falls is handicap accessible, at least to the viewing deck, then there's stairs. The bathrooms and all tables were nice and clean. We explored with our 2, 3, 7 and 9 year olds. Perfect swimming hole during the Summer. Worth the trip, everyone should go at least once, if not multiple times. You won't regret it!

Fantastic

By MickeyM1967 |

My friend and I asked around town for hiking suggestions and this place was mentioned repeatedly. They were soooooo right. This little park was amazing. Beautiful waterfall. Nice picnic areas. Relatively easy hike. Gorgeous views! A definite must-see

Day trip!

By Genia M |

Fun day out with teen girl friends! Bring sunscreen, towels, snacks, bottled water & water shoes &/or good walking shoes. The water is cold still right now but bearable after 2pm. $5 entrance fee per car. Restrooms & covered picnic tables at location. Hiking trail above. Steps to lower level pools- explore the pools on the sides of lower level as well- hidden behind rocks and grasses. Free camping in Lincoln National Park directly outside of Sitting Bull falls area.

Beautiful, quiet, amazing

By Honey H |

This place is a hidden gem! It’s off the beaten path, like most things near Carlsbad. You do end up going down some lonely country roads for miles and miles. The last one being a gravel top. But....that road pulls you into a majestic mountain range and you eventually end up at Sitting Bull Falls. It’s an hours drive or so from Carlsbad, or for us, the Carlsbad KOA. Which we chose as our home base. It’s a historic religious Indian nations meeting place. 4 nations came together for spiritual meetings there starting in the 1800’s. You can use the look out or easily walk down and go for a dip or put your feet in. Put your feet in the same pool that Sitting Bull and other tribe leaders did all that long ago. The same rock you sit on. There is a cave behind the falls but we didn’t hike to it. There was a lot of water coming down but I guess at times that could vary. The drive into the hills is worthy of the visit. The Falls was amazing for us.

It's OK

By Okiemom61777 |

We were excited to see the falls, and I will say they are very pretty. But it's a bit of a drive from Carlsbad and walking to the falls is easy and takes 3-4 min. You can hike to the top of the falls which is pretty steep, but it is short. It took us around 20 min to get to the top. But that's it. Unless you are there on a hot day and want to get in the water there isn't really anything else to do. While it was warm on the day we were there it wasn't hot. We did pack a picnic and they have lots of table in the shade to eat, we just were disappointed there sent any more trials for hiking. If you go, a half a day is all you will need to see, hike and enjoy the falls.

Beautiful place!

By trailrun901 |

Sitting Bull Fall was definitely worth traveling to while visiting Carlsbad Caverns. Very beautiful falls. Looked like a great place to cool off in the water when desert temps permit. Easy hike from the parking lot. Our sons enjoyed climbing on the rocks.

A little gem

By Howard L |

You have to drive a few miles off the highway to get here, but its a beautiful desert drive rewarded by this end of canyon green space.

Great little Oasis in the middle of nowhere

By Kaytay3000 |

What a great little place. Covered picnic areas, hiking and waterfalls with great swimming pools. Kinda of far out there but not crowded. I wish I loved closer so I could frequent this place.

Local gem

By Wingsoversiberia |

A short hike takes you to the bottom of the falls, which are absolutely beautiful. A much more strenuous hike to the top rewards you with different views and a look at the stream that feeds the falls. Definitely worth the drive from Carlsbad.

impressive

By Phil C |

Coming from a place thats lacking in waterfalls (very flat), these impressed me very much. the whole area is lovely

Memories

By Fecran |

I can remember going as a kid, the last time I was there a was 14 that was 27 years ago. But I will never forget climbing up the side to reach the cave behind the fall and exploring like all kids my generation did or swimming and free diving in one of the center fall ponds that seamed so d eels app at that age. I recommend going and taking the whole family so your kids and family can share I'm these memories.

as cool as it gets

By hotsauselover |

Incredibly beautiful natural area! There was a red flag warning the day we went, but I’d imagine it’s usually windy in this canyon. The water was so frigid it took my breath away when I jumped in. The earlier you go the better I think. The dumb teenagers start showing up about noon-1, that kinda ruins the peaceful solitude of the place. The place is somewhat spread out so you can walk/hike away from the obnoxious chaos and find some tranquility downstream or up above the falls, which have deeper pools anyway. Don’t forget to look around at the canyon caves on way driving to the area. They’re unmarked, so look carefully.

Loads of outdoor opportunity

By AdventurousGal67 |

Beware of floods in summer, if it rains hard while you are there the roads can flood. Beautiful place to splash and play for a hot summer afternoon. Just a short walk on pavement to the falls, may be ADA compliant. Longer hikes from the trailhead. Climbing (trad) may or may not be allowed. Ask USFS (United States Forest Service) for permit for caves 2 to 4 weeks in advance. Takes quite some time to drive there but a good way to spend 1/2 to 1 day. Closure times strictly enforced.

Lovely Falls in the Desert

By OldeBear |

Sitting Bull Falls is a lovely place in the middle of the desert. What is not generally known is they have cave swallows singing in the middle of the day. Regards, OldeBear

Last minute decision to visit

By sasphs |

We had a free afternoon while in Carlsbad so our daughter mentioned Sitting Bull Falls.

It was a little ways out of Carlsbad but the roads were good (it is open range so keep eyes open for livestock).

The mountains are beautiful, the falls are beautiful, there are several picnic tables at the parking lot. The walk to the falls is easy and the trail to the top to overlook the falls is slightly more strenuous and not ada friendly.

We went in December and the wind was really blowing (it was very cold).

It is mountain lion country so be aware of your surroundings. There are several low water crossings so access is limited during the rainy season.

It was definitely worth the drive!

Sitting Bulls Fall - a definite ‘must see!’

By David A |

It was a great drive there and back through open range so we saw several cows on the roads. There was a great opportunity for a hike to the top of a hill - for YOUNGER FIT people. There was falls were busy and we lucked out and got the one last open parking space. Absolutely worth the time. Not sure how it got its name though.

Worth the drive

By CYNTHIALaMesa |

It is a pretty dive that takes about one hour from Carlsbad. It has a nice picnic area. There are hiking trails or just take a short walk to the falls.

Worth the hike

By Julia H |

Thius hodden gem is literally an oasis in the desert, where clear cold water gushed from the side of a limestone cliff into a beautiful reparian area. It's a bit of a hike from the parking lot to the actual falls, but paved and provisioned with guard rails the whole route, so bring comfortable shoes, plenty of water, take your time and enjoy the views this stunning natural wonder has to offer.

Worth a visit

By texas6006 |

Worth the hour plus drive in the middle of nowhere, if you have an afternoon to kill. Very nice view and the climb to the top is just challenging enough to make you feel accomplished.

Hidden gem

By Rob G |

Beautiful waterfalls in the desert, little oasis with clear pools and quiet water falling. It is a long drive but worth it. Great picnic area and peacefull.

Fantastic, must see!

By KURT B |

What a great place. This place is beautiful and well worth the drive. I would have gave it a 5 but when we got back to the park it was closed without explanation. We hiked back to falls anyway and we where very glad we did.

Worth the Trip

By Randy O |

Pretty cool place, nice waterfalls. Handicap accessible nice easy walk. Go right to the falls, it was flowing pretty good. Nice picnic area with concrete tables. Nice restrooms with running water, no hole in the ground.

Exquisite Oasis

By landart |

A hidden gem--waterfall in the desert. Green pools of cool water below. Easy walk. Lovely surrounding mountains. Enjoy!

Closed due to fires

By Lisagtankersley |

I really wanted to visit here. If you are planning to visit here while in Carlsbad you ma want to check to see if the day use area is open as this is quite a drive.

The Great Falls Oasis

By John T |

Sitting Bull Falls was an outstanding feature of my youth; my uncle and aunt had a ranch a mile away.
The roads are better now, but allow time as they are windy and have a side drop off in places.
The Falls were running a nice amount of water for late July, but do not expect Niagra-like volumes.
There is nice stream, and pools for wading or simple immersion. It is about 4,700 feet in elevation, dry, and hot; come prepared
A great place for a day trip, pool wading or bathing, picnics, and hiking. The area on top of the Falls is great also.

Beautiful Oasis in the Mountains

By CraftCrazy575 |

This place is great to go hiking at. There's this area along the trail where it looks like a jungle! And you can also go swimming, both at the top and the bottom of the falls. And the water is so cold and refreshing! They also have pavilions near the parking lot where you can have get-togethers and eat and celebrate, and it's close to the swimming area, too. Definitely worth visiting.

Worth the drive

By liblib62 |

These falls are a nice gem in the desert. It's a bit of a drive, but worth it. There is a ramp leading to the falls, but it is a bit steep. My mother is on a walker, and we thought it might be too much for her to make it to the falls.

Sitting Bull Falls

By Stacie H |

Worth the drive to get here. Just a short easy walk and you are at the falls. Took lunch and enjoyed the walls of the cavern.

It's was ok

By hopethehelperdog |

Long drive to the falls, great spot for photography but a little concerned over the cleanliness of the water. The kids had a blast while we sat in the shade. Dog friendly but PLEASE put doggy shoes or boots on their feet because it gets super hot and has lots of stickers and sharp branches. Wear sunscreen for sure!

An amazing spot in the desert!

By SusieQ1206 |

We read about Sitting Bull Falls, and made the 30 minute trek from Carlsbad, and I must say, it was worth the trip. This is a jewel! The park service has done an amazing job to provide nice facilities for picnicking. The walk to the falls is easy, and the natural spring water fall is beautiful. There is a pool you can swim in, and it is cold and refreshing. I would say to visit early in the day in the summer...it gets warm in this canyon. Well worth the drive to see it!

Oasis in the middle of desert

By Ludek S |

We stopped there on our way to Brantley Lake campground. This is very nice place.Green oasis in the middle of desert.Falls are not so big but nice, clear cold water and green vegetation around.Nice place for taking a rest or making some picnic.Worth to go there.

Hidden gem

By Cindy P |

Although I've been to Sitting Bull Falls many times in the past I've never been in the wintertime. This morning I was there early enough to see and hear the sunbreaking up the frozen waterfall. Very cool place to visit.

Pretty little oasis...

By Sherry P |

After my husband & I spent 4 hours inside the Carlsbad Cavern (we were done by 1:00pm) we decided to drive up to Sitting Bull Falls. The recreation area is nicely maintained with a friendly host & hostess on the premises. Lots of covered picnic areas and nice restroom facilities. It is an easy, short walk to the falls & emerald pools. Amazingly, small fish were swimming in the pool! After visiting the lower falls and pool, we continued our hike up the ridge to view the falls from above.

Oasis in the desert

By Carol B |

Long drive through arid land will surprise you with a beautifully built and maintained picnic area. A short walk on a paved path will direct you to Sitting Bull Falls. Walk around the area and you will find small clear pools as well as small falls. a karst formation can be seen there ( when the outside wall of a cavern breaks off so one can see the inside of the cave/quite rare)

Beautiful spot but tough to get to.

By Angus |

It's a beautiful spot with lovely picnic facilities but difficult to get to unless you're driving a small car. The final few miles in are on a narrow road with no shoulders, inclines up to a 6% grade, hairpin turns and shear drop-offs with no guard rails. We were driving an F350 dual rear wheel truck and at one point we had to come to a complete stop on the edge of a cliff and fold our side windows in just to let a compact car squeeze by from the opposite direction. If you're driving a small SUV, you will be fine but it will still be a tense drive.

Very Fun Visit On Hot Day

By mosaiclover |

We took the long drive up to the falls and glad we did. It is very dry here so the falls was just a trickle. There were several swimmers however in the pool. Last year I saw snakes in the water so these were brave people.
There are a couple of trails to walk but the area is just colorful and pretty to go to and enjoy.

A Somewhat Hidden Gem

By Idlewanderlust |

Really enjoyed the trip out there. It's out of the way a bit but still kind of busy, but the waterfall is beautiful and the water is shallow enough to walk around and explore around it. A great way to spend a hot day.

Wonderful!

By Kelly R |

It was So beautiful! Was worth the drive out! A great surprise to see, very clean picnic area. We will go again if in the area. It is one of our favorite stops in Carlsbad

Beautiful Spings and Falls , Easy Hike

By newmexjags |

It's kind of a long drive but the road is good, paved all the way. The hike to the falls is very short, paved so good for mobility devices and fat Grandma's! There are a variety of trails for the more adventurous. The picnic grounds are beautiful, manicured lawns, nice clean bathrooms. Is this NM LOL? Swimming in the springs is cold, but the water is so clean and nice on a hot day! There are some pretty slippery rocks so be careful. We also saw a leech in the water, don't know how plentiful they are but lots of people swimming and no screams! I just did a check when we got out of the water.

Slippery rocks, beautiful scenery

By Jan |

My family and I visited this beautiful scenic area Saturday. Although there was a huge group there it was amazing from what time we got to spend there. I will advise wearing water shoes because the rocks are super slippery. Parking was also an issue. I would advise getting there very very early or going on a weekday. I even enjoyed the drive it took to get there, a lot of free range cattle and beautiful fields.

Beautiful Accessible Falls

By Gordon A |

What an amazing place! It is way off the beaten path and you must go on purpose, but it is well worth the trip! There are numerous covered picnic pavilions surrounding the parking lot. A CONCRETE PAVED WALK leads up to the falls. It is completely wheelchair accessible. From the observation area, there are steps down to the base of the falls. The ponds at the base are fun to get wet on a hot day. From the parking lot is a trail to the top of the falls which we did not take. This can be a good all day outing or a great afternoon drive. I am really glad we drove out!

Amazing Water in the midst of the Desert

By MikeB1952 |

It’s a looooooong way to Sitting Bull Falls. We traveled west from Carlsbad to a barely paved road, then about 30 miles to the Falls. The Falls are a National Forest site at the end of the road. The NF has developed a number of shelters, a nice parking area, bathrooms and a new trail to the Falls. The area was initially developed by the CCC. The CCC built one of the shelters and probably the old trail to the Falls as well. The falls are pretty neat. My wife and I walked back to the little pond at the base of the Falls. Looking up, the Falls are a ribbon of water falling over the cliff high above. Near the pond, the Falls hit some rocks and become more a mist of water rather than a cohesive water fall. They’re very pretty.

I decided to hike to the top hoping to see the falls fall over the bluff. The trail is a bit rough. Partially defined by timber steps and partially by steps cut in the stone. The trail is quite old. The steps cut into the rock have significantly eroded. The hike isn’t long. But it’s high. Almost all steps. I was huffing and puffing when I got to a level spot. At the top is a smaller, tighter canyon through which a small stream flows. At the end is a pond with lots of plants – grasses, bushes. I couldn’t see where the water actually flowed over the bluff. A nice view from the top, though.

We were really excited about the Falls. The long drive was well worth it.

Great attraction to visit if you're in the area!

By Sara C |

Takes about an hour to get to, so plan accordingly. Morning is the best time to go, as the way the falls sit, the late afternoon sun is shaded, making the pool below a little chilly. Bring a picnic, there are great tables and plenty of shade. A great place to bring the family.

The Falls Are Picture Perfect

By shesekmatok |

Hello fellow travelers 👋🏾👋🏾

We were there on a very windy day and it was pretty empty.

Started on a hike to the spring and beyond.
Followed a trail that was on All Trails. It's a 5.3 miles loop with elevation gain of 1289ft.
And I don't recommend doing that.
The springs themselves are a good spot to stop and that's a short hike.
Beyond that, the trail is poorly maintained. We've lost the trail a few times, even though I've had a trail map to follow.
Thorns and untamed vegetation growth, riddled the path.
There's not much to see.

The Falls are beautiful and they are close to the parking lot.

Great place for a picnic, when the winds are not trying their best to blow u away.

If u are in the area, I recommend a short stop.
The park has hosts and the gates close in the evening.
You need to pay for entry or have an annual NP pass.

If u have any questions, feel free to to ask.

Enjoy ✨

Come Prepared; Must Do!

By Rhonda H |

New Mexico is a whole lot of desert so seeing that they had a National Forest with falls AND that it's swimmer friendly really piqued my interest. It was an easy sell to my family.

To prepare:
1. We wore clothes/ shoes that we could hike and swim in (it's a paved sidewalk and has an incline so it's not technically a hike, haha)
2. We brought picnic type food
3. We brought sunscreen
4. We only took necessities to the falls (they, etc. )
5. We arrived on a Mon morning and had the place to ourselves for awhile
6. Families with younger children should plan on floaties
7. I read many of these reviews and just don't agree with, "long drive." Don't let that deter you- it's not that long to drive- it's all in perspective I guess!
8. Bathrooms and picnic tables are by the parking lot
9. It's monitored self-pay so bring $5 cash

Casual park

By Reil R |

Great park with beautiful falls. Plenty of space for picnicking. This is a well taken care of place.

Not worth the drive

By DYK640 |

This is a moderately tall falls, but very little water flow. Nothing exciting. If it was closer to civilization I would have rated it higher. But it is hard to get to and very out of the way from anything and everything. Definitely not worth the drive.

Nice stop!

By Msmechanic58 |

We enjoyed our hike and the waterfall. Took time to ride some of the side trails in the Lincoln National Forest on the way out.

Beautiful

By Sharyn L |

Nice easy walk to breathtaking falls. Observation deck is easy to reach, but if you want to go all the way down to the water at the bottom there are a few steep stairs that may be an obstacle for some. Very peaceful and serene early in the morning. Several covered picnic tables make for a nice relaxing g picnic.

Remote to access but great visit

By paju1452 |

It is really remote and takes a bit to get there, but once you do, the park is nice. There were some folks swimming at the base of the falls. You can walk down to the water (obviously) but it is for the sure footed. There are restrooms but no places to eat or get drinks that I saw. Don't expect Niagara. Before getting disappointed in the smallish size of the falls, keep in mind that it is miraculous that there are waterfalls of any type in the desert. It is worth the drive. They close sharply at 6 pm.

Waste of Time

By Daniel G |

Complete waste of time the place had been taken over by non americans swimming and picking there was no place to sit that wasn't taken
Then there was the "falls" my garden hose makes a better "fall"

Great Family Hike

By lanceandamanda |

Leave early as you’ll have a long but beautiful drive into the national park. We got to the parking lot right as it opened and started the hike up to the top of the waterfall. We hiked about 3 miles total for the day with myself, husband, and our 3 kids (ages 3, 5, and 7 years old). There’s a few spots we had to help our kids out but they were still able to do this hike easily. Just keep them close as it drops off close to the top of the waterfall, obviously. We made our way to a beautiful lily pad pond, saw 2 snakes here, so keep an eye out. We let the kids play in the water that was streaming but not stagnant. It was cold and refreshing on the hike. On the way down the mountain we came very close to 3 deer and got to watch them effortlessly run up the mountain side so that was cool! We went slow and enjoyed the hike so it took us about 2 hours. We made it back down to the parking lot at lunch and then took the paved sidewalk down to the waterfall. We had a picnic then swam in that icy cold water! Me and our 7 year old climbed up onto the rocks (be careful was very mossy and slippery) and stood under the waterfall. My husband had to hold tight to our 3 year old who can’t swim yet because it does go pretty deep so keep that in mind. (I should have brought the puddle jumpers for her). After that we laid out on the rocks to warm up then hiked some more back behind the falls. The kids looked for minnows in the shallow areas. If you’re looking for some adventure, this was a great family day trip! Had a blast and was surprised with the beauty here!

Old Park needs updating

By Teachsaturn |

The drive to the falls was very enjoyable. The park needs a face life as most of the information boards are hard to read and need to be updated. The walk to the falls is short and very easy. Nice place to visit and have a picnic but probably won't spend a great deal of time.

Very interesting

By Tlm2216 |

Sitting bull falls is way out there. Make sure you bring a cooler of drinks, Full tank of gas, food,And whatever else you might need because once you get there you will be an hour from anywhere. The closest place is queen and the convenient store/restaurant there is only open Friday Saturday and Sunday from what I was told. The falls are very interesting and a pleasant drive. Lots of wildlife and landscape to look at. There is a short path from the parking area to the falls (handicapped friendly) there are facilities located at the falls and seem to be pretty clean. There is a five dollar parking fee.

Worth the drive

By Barbara M |

Actually, the drive is pretty interesting. We were looking for alternatives to the caverns during the shutdown. This was terrific. It’s a stunning canyon; the hike up to the creek (? Route 68) was really appealing— and as an added bonus, the caretaker asked if her very sweet dog Nutmeg could join us. And of course, the waterfall itself is really special and beautiful.

Oasis in the middle of the desert

By davaltar3 |

We drove out on a hot July morning and loved the coolness of the area. Even though it was still hot, you felt cooler by being in the canyon area with the trees and water. It is a lovely morning and we hiked around the falls area. Children especially loved swimming in the pool at the base of the falls. We will go back!!

Gorgeous area!

By Gina A |

A photographers dream - from the falls to the surrounding mountains. So glad we took the time to explore this area.

Permit Required For Cave

By kasejason |

The primary purpose of our visit to Sitting Bull Falls was to visit the small cave located behind the falls. We made the drive to the falls from Carlsbad and it took a little more than an hour and a half to reach the falls. We enjoyed the views of the waterfall for a few moments before heading up the slippery steps that lead underneath the waterfall and up to the cave (accessed to the left of the falls).

When we got to the cave area, we saw signs stating that entry to the caves requires a permit. We were tempted to explore even though we didn't have a permit, but we didn't want to trespass and headed out. This was a major disappointment, as we had been looking forward to exploring the cave. If you come to this location looking for cave access, make sure that you contact the Lincoln National Forest for a permit first. The cave appeared very wet, and some wading would have been required to reach the deeper parts of the cave, so prepare accordingly.

Back at the waterfall itself, we were tempted to take a quick dip, but we saw a leech swimming in the water. One leech isn't such a big deal, but it was enough to put us off of swimming here. There were still plenty of other people swimming in the vicinity, and they didn't seem to be having any troubles.

There were clean restrooms located at the parking area, and there were several shaded picnic areas. We visited on a week day and didn't find the place too crowded. If you've got some extra time in the Carlsbad area and are looking for something a little different, a trip out to Sitting Bull Falls would be worth the effort.

If you visit Carlsbad Carverns you must stop here

By Dan |

A great falls with swimming ponds in the middle of the desert. This place is a hidden gem only open till 6pm so go early. Limited parking but plenty of area for pinics.

Great family vacation spot!

By Amy D |

The kids have nice swimming at the bottom of the water fall. Nice springs to swim in at the top of the fall. Covered tables at the entrance for eating and relaxing. Make sure you leave your $5 day fee! It helps maintain and clean the spot!!

Beautiful falls, easy walk

By Wade S |

Great place to visit. Nice big well sheltered eating areas at parking lot. Clean bathrooms with full plumbing. Short, paved, easy walkway to the bottom of the beautiful falls. We enjoyed the more challenging climb to the top of the falls and enjoyed exploring up the stream, looking for frogs, fish and enjoying the views and small pools. Cool, clean flowing water was refreshing in the summer heat. At the bottom of the falls are nice swimming pools, but slippery to go into. About 45 minutes on a couple dirt roads off the main highway. Saw lots of cows song the way and a snake on the road along the way.

Excellent day trip

By Vickie R |

Go early and hope you to park in a spot close to the falls. It was well worth the trip to se the falls.

Take your time and look around.

By dqdick |

About a mile before we even got to the border of the Forest Service land we saw a flock of at least a dozen Big Horn Sheep climbing the hillside. Winter is a great time to visit the falls because, while you may not want to swim or stand under the falls, there are few people coming and going so you can see more animals and take your time enjoying the great views.

Spring Break

By Jean Y |

Great place fir hiking, picnicking, swimming in a cold natural pool under a water fall. The picnic area was originally built by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps). You can visit year around and really enjoy what nature has to offer

worth the long trip

By Martha S |

this is a very remote spot. i guess it is the honor system, when paying the $5.00 fee. you fill out and envelope, tear off a part, then put the envelope, with payment, in a slot. you have to travel through a ranch, on a farm to market road. no fences-cattle guards. cows were on the road, at times. the park, where the falls are, was very clean. you walk to a overlook, that has a rail around it. you can walk down to the falls.it is a very pretty fall.

The drive is part of the experience

By Paul W |

Relax and enjoy the vistas on the drive out. Under an hour to get to the Falls from Carlsbad and the views on the way are wonderful. Take the Guadalupe Backcountry Byway on the way in (north of Carlsbad) and the Dark Canyon Road brings you back to the south of Carlsbad (dark country means no cell service, so download those Google maps!). Delightful drive.

Plenty of covered picnic areas at the station. The base of the Falls are easy to get to. Whether you want to take pictures, go for a swim, or get some sun... plenty to enjoy. The Falls are beautiful and worth the trip alone.

Wonderful waterfall in out of way place

By cumberlandga |

As other reviewers have stated, it is off the main road quite a bit, but for us, was so worth the drive. I was more than a little concerned when our nav app could not tell us where we were going and had to trust the signs. But, we found it and were incredibly amazed at the waterfall and landscape. We passed many cows and even had a deer "play chicken" with our car, it would not get out of way until I honked the horn:) The hike up to the Falls was pretty easy and it was very refreshing to play in water, as it was hot. If I'm in area again, I would take picnic up and really spend some time there but we were hungry and there are no concessions in area, so we made it a short visit.

Way out of the way but very beautiful

By Underpaid62 |

drive for about 40 minutes down a few windy roads with free roaming cattle and end up in a well-maintained, quiet place with a beautiful waterfall and nice picnic area.

Good place to picnic.

$5 fee

How amazing to find this site in the northern Chihuahuan Desert countrt

By H P |

This was a beautiful site, even at the end of a dry winter. The road leading to the Falls was long but paved and easy to follow, through desert country. The spring-fed falls were surprising. Obviously, the water flow will be greater during other times of the year but it is still natural and beautiful. There is a nice parking lot, restrooms and several picnic shelters. The walk/climb up to the falls is not very long or too strenuous.

IT IS OPEN

By littlepip2018 |

The review saying it was closed is from 2014 after heavy flooding. This is an easy hike and is remarkable that it even exists. The whole Carlsbad area is a wonder to behold.

Oasis in the middle of the desert

By Shae M |

This has to be one of the most captivating hikes we’ve been on.
We started our hike at the bottom of the falls and worked our way up to the top. Scrambled over rocks, peered over cliffs... each time saying “Let’s just go a little further”. We hiked miles in such beautiful scenery that I now know why they call New Mexico “The Land of Enchantment”

WAY Off The Beaten Path Stop

By Matt L |

Pretty neat waterfall in the middle of the desert. There is a small fee for this. There are covered picnic tables and clean bathrooms. Please note: the falls are in the middle of nowhere. If you are using a cell phone for mapping service is pretty much nonexistent.
I took a dip at the base of the falls and the water is pretty frigid. You can explore the falls at your leisure. There were a few random snakes around the water. Not sure if they were poisonous.
There is supposed to be a pool at the top of the falls. There is a path that takes you there but I didn't actually check it out myself.

oasis in the desert

By Sara B |

Really neat place -- oasis in the desert in what seems the middle of nowhere with free ranging cows. Our group really enjoyed the diversity between sitting bull falls & climbing around a little around the rocks, carslbad caverns, and hiking in guadalupe mountains national park -- it makes a nice break from hiking & great for sightseeing. Even the very skeptical people in our group who did not think water would possibly be flowing in this drought were pleasantly surprised. It's an artesian well so it flows no matter what! I would be skiddish going here after heavy rains as the road has multiple low crossings through creek beds that clearly are flooded/flash flooded easily. But otherwise, its worth the road trip to see it! Really nice shaded picnic areas all around the falls which would be great if visiting in summer and needed a reprieve from the sun.

Little gem in the desert

By Blythe A |

We absolutely love Sitting Bull Falls! This is the perfect place to take out of town guest, they are always amazed that this beautiful spot is in the middle of our desert. Weekends can be quite busy so if you're planning on picnicking at one of there many picnic tables, get there early as they go fast!

Hike around the falls too!!

By Lieu H |

If you're in Carlsbad to visit Carlsbad Caverns, try to plan another day to visit Sitting Bull Falls! It is about a 40 minutes drive west of Carlsbad, NM. It is inside the Lincoln National Forest and is within the Guadalupe Mtns system, so it is a really pretty drive to get there-cliffs, high mtns, desert system plants, winding roads, large vistas. The waterfall is easy to get to. We parked and walked on a paved and railed walkway for 2 minutes and there it was. You can swim in the pools beneath the waterfall but it was too cold and windy that day for us. We were able to walk around the bottom of the waterfall. Then we went onto the trail to do a short hike to the top of the waterfall. It took us about 10 minutes to get to the top but the trail is steep and narrow. The trail can be akin to approximately 5-6 flights of stairs. Not terrible but we were breathing harder when we got to the top. Don't expect to see a raging river! The rocks in this area are very porous so the waterfall flow is accumulated inside the rock and we only saw small trickles of water heading out to become part of the waterfall. Beautiful view from the top anyways so not a wasted hike. We unfortunately turned around too soon to go down though. At our hotel, we were informed that if we were to have walked 10minutes further we would have found a cave that we are allowed to explore! So, take time and go find that cave! Bring sturdy shoes and possibly swim clothes if you're wanting to take a dip after the hike to the cave.

So great!

By tews |

This is about a 45min drive from Carlsbad, but so worth it. $5 per car to see it for the day. If you have a national parks pass it will get you in free. Lots of covered picnic tables. Good area for swimming, hiking, and rock climbing. The viewing deck is wheelchair accessible. If you are going on a holiday weekend, go early. The parking lot fills up quickly.

Disaster

By Mike Jordan |

We followed the directions on the way to the Falls. The dirt road turned into a rutted single lane. The GPS lost satellite coverage. We persevered. To a locked gate. We were happy to find our way out, lucky to still have the oil pan on the Subaru. No hike. No falls. Locked gate, bad roads. Bring a jeep or a pickup truck. Better yet, a camel.

Beautiful spot!

By Heather M |

We went to the falls after visiting the cavern, it is close by on the same highway. The walk to the falls is easy and short - for a lovely view of the mountains and falls.
We walked down to the small pool at the base and took a dip - a little chilly this time of year but refreshing! My 12 and 14 year old loved running around on the rocks and in the water.
There is a wonderful picnic area around the parking area. Each spot is covered and has a bbq - if we had know we would have brought our picnic and stayed longer.
This is a great place to stop either before or after visiting the cavern.

Oasis in the desert

By Norm_Nice_Guy |

This place can be a little hard to find. If you follow CR 408 to Queens Highway, make sure you turn left at the. intersection. Also take note that there area has many spots that can flood unexpectedly. A very good area to picnic in one of the covered areas. The falls is an easy walk from the entrance. Just listen for the sounds of kids playing in the water.

Hidden gem - open in August!

By Jordan T |

Hidden gem! Was open to the public when we went in August 2020. It's in the middle of the desert, but like an oasis. $5 entrance fee and easy walkway to the base of the falls, where you can relax and swim. You can do a longer hike to the top of the falls where there are more pools to swim in and the spring itself. Easy to find shade. Bring water shoes to save your feet!

WATCH FOR SNAKES!

By Leah W |

We were visiting Carlsbad and decided to hike to these falls for a quick swim. The drive is forever long but once you arrive it's a nice view. The price was cheap, unless u don't have change like us. We ended up donating a 20 to get in. There are really nice restrooms and picnic areas, even though it was very windy. The hike to the falls is short and in concrete. Very easy for anyone. Once you get to the overlook it's a short trip down some stairs. Our kids immediately went into the freezing cold water. We love to explore so we walked the whole area. In the hour we were there we saw 3 snakes. On by a rock, one I stepped over the top of and one swimming in the water near us. There are signs stating venomous snake everywhere. I don't know if the 2 were but one was just a grass snake. It's a gorgeous place, just keep your eyes open while enjoying it.

Worth the drive to explore this natural beauty

By lorayne b |

The falls are spectacular-- about the last thing you'd expect to find in the middle of an otherwise dry desert. And the hike up the hill is a good stretch of the legs that rewards you with a great view. Come early and bring a picnic. Lots of great spots, but they get grabbed up quickly on the weekends. The rangers were friendly and helpful and the facilities were adequate.

Beautiful hike

By natehed144 |

Had a great hike to the falls, watch out during bad weather as the river and falls can get pretty crazy! Beautiful place to stop by and visit though, worth the trip

Oasis in the Desert

By Kisutton |

Sitting Bull Falls is a great place to picnic, hike, swim and just enjoy nature. If you aren't afraid of a little hike, you will find a crystal clear pool, feed by a mountain spring just a few miles away. At the bottom of the falls there is another beautiful clear pool. It is a beautiful drive thru the desert and then you find a beautiful oasis. I was lucky enough to grow up close, so I have spent many hours exploring this place throughout my life and I am still in awe when we visit.

Worth the long drive

By rhia474 |

It takes about half a day to get there, take it in, play with the park ranger's lovely puppy and get back to the main highway. An absolute gem tucked away from Hwy 285 on a farm road that takes you through tiny settlements, cattle, horses and rather spectacular scenery for over 30 miles. Make sure you have your camera, some of those rock formations are better then on 7 up to Carlsbad Caverns.

The falls themselves are inside the Lincoln National Forest and in the springtime we visited (March 2019) the multiple falls were flowing merrily. The foliage was still sparse on the trees, in a few weeks it's probably even lovelier. The water is super clear and very cold; the kids had fun jumping on the rocks barefoot a bit. There are a few trails around, one takes you up to the top.

The friendly park ranger will take your cash payment for the visit (5 dollars) and there are some basic restroom facilities and picnic tables, kept in order. Cell coverage is very spotty out here for those of us who like to post immediately on Instagram or Facebook so you may want to hold off on that until you are back on the main road. The air is clear, the rocks are stunning. There is a sign about this being mountain lion country so keep an eye on the kids if you climb the top trail just in case (they also give you tips on what to do if you see one). Absolute gem, worth it.

Day trip

By goodtimes432 |

I had heard of Sitting Bull falls, I decided to take a day ride I am very glad I did the falls really are an oasis the surrounding hills are very dry the spring that feeds the falls is tucked away which led me to hike to the origin of the spring there are several hiking trails very nice covered picnic tables restrooms I will definitely be making more trips.

Amazing place!!

By sewol460 |

Sitting bull falls is an amazing oasis in the desert!! The waterfall is a true natural scenic wonder. The forestry staff is friendly and very knowledgable.

This is a great place to visit - kid friendly - peaceful. Nice area to just relax - take a picnic... don't feed the fish!

Surprise Oasis

By Holly S |

What a beautiful hidden spot! The falls are so pretty and peaceful! The short, but steep, hike above the falls is a great way to get the heart pumping. Definitely worth the drive.

Fun in the sun!

By Phil T |

It's a fair drive from Carlsbad to the Lincoln National Forest. (60+ miles) The views are spectacular all along the way into the parking area. We had to hike a mile from the outer parking into the falls area. There are extensive trails, the longest being only 6.6 miles. The park rangers are friendly and easy to find. This park has caves, but a permit is required to obtain access.

A lot of driving to get there. Very cool to see

By roughneck55 |

I only wish I had not gone when it was so cold. The pond at the base of the falls looked like a good place to swim

Nice scenery

By Heather |

This was our first time here, the drive there was very pretty and cool. When we got there tge water fall was pretty. We didn't climb to the top of the hill because it was too cold. But we got good pics. Tgey should have wildlife on the drive there that'd be even more cool

Well worth the drive

By Z1837KRcathyb |

Sitting Bull Falls is at the end of a long road but excellent scenery through Lincoln National Forest. The falls are not very big but very beautiful. There is a very nice picnic area with grills and a cover over the table. There are several hiking trails and the falls are a short walk from the parking lot. There is a $5 per car fee.

Best waterfall in New Mexico!

By jpaebpearson |

We really enjoyed this waterfall. The drive is a little long but definitely worth it. The water was very cool and the kids loved that you could actually get under the waterfall. The kids were able to do lots of exploring. There was one spot where the kids were able to slide down the rocks, but I wouldn't recommend this without having shorts on. Definitely need water shoes here!

Unexpected Experience

By SidMonge |

Definitely worth the drive to an accessible, beautiful waterfall in the middle of the desert. Very easy to reach on concrete sidewalks, a short distance from parking.

Very pretty

By Bridgette W |

We went to the falls and up above the falls. It was very pretty and scenic. It was pretty cool there in late November, but I'm sure better than being there in the heat of the summer.
It wasn't crowded at all either.

Disappointed

By Riverbabe60 |

The drive is long on a road that is not great, slow driving and upon reaching the falls it's a short walk down a paved path to the falls. I expected something more it was a small fall into a small pool, swimming is allowed and they have a nice picnic area but I was disappointed as I was expecting something larger. It is very pretty and scenic but way out of the way for what it is...not worth the drive.

Worthy of a drive.

By 1SueDu |

Off the mainstream. Lovely place. If, you have the time to get to southern NM. Take a bit more time to visit.

Off- the-beaten-path gem

By Janet J |

We got here about an hour before closing time and there were not a lot of people at Sitting Bull which was nice. It is a bit of a drive to reach, but we were so glad that we made the effort. It is a short hike to the top near the falls, but the best place to be is at the base of the falls. It was shady and relaxing. You could sit and soak your feet in the water at the base of the falls and take a short hike from there to another hidden fall. I think it would be a great spot for a date or quiet picnic.

Great Place to Visit

By 2014psr |

Very out of the way but worth the trip. Not many people were there when we got there. There are covered picnic tables and restrooms. You can take the walkway down to the bottom of the falls for pictures or wading in the pool. The water is about adult chest deep. There is a trail to go up to the top of the falls but we did not go that direction. Water was clean and people were very nice. Good place to cool off on a hot day.

Stunningly beautiful!

By Jack G |

Wonderful and memorizing! My family and I are traveling through with friends. We're glad we had the chance to see this heading towards Arizona. Make sure your battery on your phone is full. You will take a bunch of pics and ours kept dying at the worst time.

Long drive for a small waterfall

By ElaineReads |

I am a waterfall junkie, so I was delighted to find out there was one near Carlsbad. It is actually over an hour away and the roads are not that good. The park itself was very nice and the waterfall was pretty. It was just a long drive.

It would be worth it if you were planning on swimming and/or picnicking.

Supposed to reopen?

By evemari86 |

I havent been here yet but I looked at the national park website and it says this will be open for day use on May 22, 2015? Not sure if this is true but I will be in Carlsbad this weekend and will check it out. Hopefully it is.

A Real Oasis Experience

By MikeB1952 |

We’ve been there before. In January. In the cold. And liked it. So, why not return?! The Falls are in the middle of nowhere. About 40+ miles from Carlsbad out in the high desert. The road there is winding through rolling hills. Paved all the way (nice). Then, at the end, the road goes through a deepening canyon until it ends and we’re at the picnic area. Nice area for picnicking. There are a number of pavilions with picnic tables in them. Some pavilions built by the CCC in the early 1930s. Good for them.

A short walk on a paved easy path winds back to the falls. And they’re great. First, there’s a slot canyon with steep sides rising on three sides. Then in two places, there are rivulets of water falling down the canyon walls splashing out in rain-like cascades until falling into a nice little pond at the bottom. A number of people there. But not crowded. We marveled at the Falls tracing the rivulets back up the canyon wall to the point where they began. From the moisture, the rocks are covered with mosses, vines and other ‘green stuff’. Really pretty. We could have stayed longer but knowing we had a drive ahead of us, we pulled ourselves away.

Good visit.

Sitting Bull Falls

By jpatterson915 |

About 32 miles southwest of highway 285. Drive up to was scenic. Once you get there, nice little trails to take you to various water spots in the area. The falls were picturesque. Well worth the time

Wonderful hiking spot

By Wanda O |

What a fabulous place to hike! The falls are nice to visit, but the trails throughout Lincoln National Forest nearby the falls are the real attraction. Took the dog and went out on trail T226. We saw wildlife, varied terrain, streams and pools of spring fed water. Best of all not another soul around! The park employee at the parking area was so very helpful about the best trails to hike.

Holiday

By Sue H |

A rather long drive through seemingly unending country before you reach Lincoln Forest Park. It is then 7 miles to the falls through amazing, awesome and magnificent canyon country. We were there in the dry season so falls not too full but beautiful for all that. Easy paved path to the falls and a rather challenging track to the top of you want! Potable water and clean loos available as well as bbq and picnic areas.

Great falls and swimming hole

By cityglow |

This is an unexpected oasis in the middle of nowhere. Falls are beautiful and its a great place to take a dip. The shelters provide a great spot for lunch. Signs seemed to indicate that the annual pass does not cover the fee for this spot.

Great views and rewarding falls

By Andrew J |

Sitting Bull Falls is off the beaten path for sure, but well worth the trek especially if you’re already close to the area perhaps visiting one of the national parks like Guadalupe and or Carlsbad Caverns. There is a nominal fee of five dollars to park and access the area but well worth it. There are really nice picnic venues with some of the nicest shelters I’ve ever seen and charcoal grills available. Also good restroom facilities with flush toilets and soap to wash your hands. The walk to the falls from the parking area is about a 10th of a mile and is concrete with railings. There are steps down to the pools beneath the fall but you can access the viewing area without steps. Bring your bathing suit and swim beneath the falls in the beautiful pools.

what an unexpected treasure!!

By sparky221 |

My husband and I had some time to kill and found this on our travel map. I am glad we made the journey to see it. Very refreshing change of scenery from all the cacti and dryness of the desert.

Staff was very helpful and a beautiful spot to visit!

By Terrill D |

The falls area was beautiful and the staff very helpful in planning out our day of hiking the area. Definitely give this place a visit, you'll be very pleased!

take the drive

By becky h |

It is one hour to drive to the falls. There was only one other group there so we had the area to ourselves. The falls are a 5 minute or less walk from the parking lot. We took the hike up to see the source of the waterfall which was another 30 minutes. This was not hard if you are moderately fit. There were shaded picnic spots. The original building were built by the CCC.

Spectacular Oasis in the Desert

By kathy c |

You can swim and hike around the falls, but the water is cold! There are beautiful picnic areas. You could spend the day here. Watch out for tarantulas and scorpions.

Breathtakingly beautiful!!

By Patticoke |

I’ve visited Sitting Bull Falls many times in the twenty years I’ve lived here.
It is absolutely beautiful!! It has a nice concrete walk down to the falls and if you
want you can wade in the little natural pool.
A lot of local people go there in the summer.
It’s off the beaten path, but IMHO, believe it is worth it.
If you have children, they will love it.

Hidden gem in the desert.

By Jody H |

A place you definitely need to stop for. We were quite surprised by the hidden beauty of this place. We just happened upon a brochure about this place while visiting Carlsbad Caverns, and decided to give it a try. We would have spent more time here, if we could have. Not very crowded, either.

Beautiful place

By DisneyDarwin |

This place is a bit remote, you don’t just drop by. But, it is definitely a gem at the end of the road. After driving through a bunch of nothing, you enter a canyon, and at the end of the road the CCC developed a lovely park to go with the falls. While not huge, thhey are picturesque and the pools below are inviting. A truly lovely place, as if God wanted himself a swimming hole.

Beautiful falls, cold and windy in winter

By SanDiegoMom08 |

Note if you are going from Carlsbad it’s a LONG drive. About an hour the northern way. Most is desert until you get close

The falls themselves are gorgeous. We went mid January and note it was REALLY windy. Nature has her own mind. We couldn’t stay too long due to wind severity which also made it cold. We also were only ones there until we left. If I was by myself or just w my daughter not sure I would have gotten out of car.

The falls are not visible from parking lot or the picnic area which is very nice so know you have to walk.

I definitely suggest a visit but suggest to go maybe March and later

Neat little oasis in the desert

By Joycelyn |

The water was cold and so nice... until my husband said there was a leech in the water. It was so small and harmless, but I’m a scaredy-cat when it comes to bug-like creatures, so I couldn’t get back in the water. We did the hike up to the top- whoa! That was more than I expected, but it was nice up there too. (Keep in mind you are at 5,000 feet elevation.) The free range bulls and cows were so interesting to see on the drive to it. And we also saw a Roadrunner! (Brought back memories of childhood cartoons!)

A nice short hike

By William G |

The falls are nice, but not large. The drive out is long (about 30 miles). There is nice scenery on the way out, so don't use the falls as just a destination. There is a nice paved viewing area at the bace of the falls with a nice clear, shallow pool at the base. There is a short, steep hike to the top of the falls that will give you a chance to stretch and see that the falls go through the passages in the rocks from upper pools. There are nice picnic areas and restrooms at the national park (part of Lincoln National Forest) Home of Smokey Bear. There is a $5 fee to enter the park. (or interagency pass)

The Overcrowded Oasis

By Douglas B |

One of the most beautiful and serene places in the lower United States. My childhood was built entirely around summer trips to visit it's majesty...

Sadly not an experience I was able to share with my own family some twenty years later. What used to be a quiet and secluded place to those of us in the know has turned into an overcrowded mess of jacked up trucks and 100k escalades overflowing the parking lot. A crowd of non modestly dressed gymrats and people wanting to add to their Instagram and TikTok presence, absolutely defiling the sanctity and quiet that this place once offered.

The price has increased from 5 to ten dollars, take cash, go as early as possible, watch for freshwater brown leaches, watch your step or better yet just don't go.

For us, it was not worth the 4 hour drive from our west Texas home that I spent months looking forward to. Nothing is special anymore. Once it's on the Internet it's ruined. There's no peace and quiet left in the world.

Pradise in the desert

By Alison S |

The waterfall is worth traveling to see it. We arrived early in June and had the entire park to ourselves. It was hot but the water was just right.
The short paved trail is easy and very accessible to all. I plan on coming back in the fall or spring as the summer is too hot for hiking.

Loved it!

By Lisa B |

Had been wanting to check this place out for awhile and definitely glad we did. It was an impromptu trip and took quite awhile - certainly out of the way of everything except drilling sites - but when we finally arrived it was very beautiful.

SITTING BULL FALLS> DONT MISS THIS!!

By daviggi13 . |

Great attraction in one of our great National Forests!!
Scenic switchback roadway into to the park.
In season i hear there are a few different waterfalls flowing; in late July, there was only one & IT WAS AMAZING!
The main pool is large enough for a dozen people; two of us sat under the falls for a while getting a great water massage; we splashed around for two hours & had a great time.

Beautiful site

By 957edn |

We went to this site just about an hour out of Carlsbad, NM. They have a nice parking lot with lots of covered picnic areas and restrooms. It is a short walk to the falls or for the more adventurous, a person could hike to the top of the falls - we opted to not do the hike but rather enjoyed the falls from the bottom. It is a very nice oasis outside of town.

Always beautiful

By Jane C |

It doesn't matter the season, Sitting Bull Falls, is always amazing. Fun to see a Water Fall in the middle of the desert.

Hidden away...about 1-1/2 hrs from Carlsbad.

By homeocsg |

Gas up and take a drive to Sitting Bulls Falls. The Rangers are extremely helpful and the grounds are clean. Bring your bathing suit and swimming shoes, although you probably won't be swimming....more like wading around in the water. The place wasn't crowded at all and we spent a few hours at the Falls. Nice break just to get away for the afternoon.

Worth the drive

By Ann B |

We found ourselves in Carlsbad with a few hours to kill and took a drive out to Sitting Bull Falls. It is a long drive, no question, but the scenery is beautiful along the way. The falls are a short walk up a paved trail. They did not disappoint. There is also a steep natural trail off to the side that provides access to the top of the falls. The short hike was worth it.

Looks like Paradise Falls

By mtfriess |

If you were not standing in the middle of southern New Mexico, you would think this waterfall was in the tropics. It is a truly beautiful setting, easy to hike to from the parking lot, and interesting to hike around. I wish it had been warm enough to swim because the pools look quite inviting. Obviously this place is way off the beaten path but well worth it if you are in the area. I commented to the volunteer that the picnic tables and area around the parking lot is the cleanest I have ever seen--there is not even bird droppings on the picnic areas.

We really enjoyed spending a few hours at this park. It took a while to get there up the hills but was relaxing and very pretty. Enjoyed sitting by the waterfall on a hot day. Some kids were swimming. Cute picnic areas.

The surprise is this opens up in the middle of a deserd

By shoreylrs |

Its a must see if you have never been like going back is time and that your swim suit several trails to hike and lots of history Sitting Bull was never there

Off the grid

By Brandi H |

Of you have time go see the falls. It is an hour off the road but beautiful. Spent a good amount of time climbing rocks and exploring!

Worth the Drive

By MajorLSU |

We went to this wonderful spot as a side trip to the Caverns. It was well worth the trip (about an hour) to see a truly unique feature in this area. The falls were totally accessible by either a paved trail to the viewing area or by a climbing path to the top.
This is a prime example of the many smaller parks that have unique and special places for all to visit. I highly recommend this stop.

Nice (but small) waterfall/swimming hole

By LWarmwater |

Took a drive to the falls during the day. Found it to be a small waterfall.....possibly due to time of year and lack of water. But it is also a small swimming area that families go to and relax and cool off. A small $5 fee paid to help the State Park. Parking is limited. The main lot may hold 20 cars. There is a lot about a mile away, but be prepared to walk that mile back to the main area. Summer temperatures were around 95 degrees, so the walk will be tougher. Spent about an hour here.

Nice riding

By Felipe V |

We like riding and the ride to this oasis in the n.m. desert is cool I've been there several times and it just gets nicer everytime we come to this awesome place

awesome

By Marybeth S |

it is an out of the way get away;} natures beauty;} you can take a lunch or grill there. Be sure and take extra shoes or clothes as you can and will want to get in the water

Wow! Do not underestimate!

By David B |

Most of the reviews are very good, but I read a few from people who were underwhelmed. I don't know how that was possible. It's not Niagra Falls. But it is an amazing desert oasis!

This site is managed by the National Forest Service, and there are several covered picnic areas above the falls. There is a very decent bathroom as well. This does not involve a lot of walking, but there are stairs.

Once you walk down to the falls, make sure to explore this small area. Our boys loved finding and climbing to all the hidden nooks. The main pool below the waterfall is cold and great for swimming on a hot summer day. Bring water shoes. The rocks are slippery. And bring a lunch and stay a bit.

All this for a cost of only $5. It was worth every penny!

Great spot to cool off after a hot day in Carlsbad

By EStorm |

Sitting Bull falls is the perfect place to go on a hot afternoon. The water is cold and the area is really an oasis in the desert. It's worth the 30 minutes to drive to it., Take a picnic cooler and stay awhile. It's a nice place!

Fabulous

By Marshall S |

I thought to myself, are we in Hawaii it New Mexico. A waterfall in the middle of the desert. Easy hike to pools at the top of the waterfall is a must. We swam in the pools, had a picnic and enjoyed a warm but beautiful day.

Totally relaxing & beautiful!!

By Sgalvan |

Great picnic areas and sidewalks , easy access to falls with nice walkways . Great place to relax with family. Grandkids loved being able to cool off at the falls & natural pools. Would recommend to all to experience sitting bull falls. Loved it!

worth the drive.

By imdun |

Located about an hour from Carlsbad, Sitting Bull Falls is a gem in the middle of nowhere. Nice picnic facilities. The falls are very nice and you can swim at the bottom. Easy walk.

Sitting bull falls

By Kelly G |

My husband and I visited and it was everything we wanted. It takes almost an hour to get there from Carlsbad because of the road, several cattle guards you have to go over and the cows that are along the side of the road. When you get there you pay $5 and put a paper on your dash showing you paid. There are water fountains and clean bathrooms. You can take the concrete path to the observation deck and see the fall and then take the path to the top to see it from the top of the fall. It took us about an hour total and we stayed at the top and looked around for awhile. The top view is worth it! The whole area was clean and well kept.

Never reached

By Colton M |

I read the reviews stating the trip is an hour each way from Carlsbad. I followed the signs and ended turning right onto a caliche road with a lot of cattle guards. As I could only drive 20-30 mph and there were a lot of rocks, it took 30 minutes to drive the first 6 miles. I never saw another car and I had no cell service. My next turn via Waze said the next 5 miles was to take 40 minutes. My son was worried that we would run out of gas so we turned around. It seems that with this road and cattle pastures the trip should take 2 hours+ each way ???

7 year wedding anniversary/with kids

By Latasha M |

We decided to stop before heading back home, It was extremely nice. If you plan on having a bbq or just a picnic. There's a ton of picnic tables, along with a bbq grill at each of them. There's a bathroom area if you need a bathroom break. We did the hike up the mountain, it was a little difficult. So if you have really young children maybe avoid doing it (mine is 6 1/2) and he slipped a few times. My husband and i took turns with our son on the hike, because we have a 5 month old. The trail goes on forever so make sure you bring some water along. The water fall is so pretty, you can get in but it's freezing and extremely slippery. So we just sat on the rocks with our feet in the water.

Off the beaten path

By Garrett S |

If your in the area and looking to cool off, this is a nice place. The path to the bottom of the falls is assessable via concrete path that leads to an overlook. You can climb down a set of stairs to the swimming area below the falls. If your feeling more adventurous, there is hiking to the top of the falls with a small basin you can get in before the falls. The climb to the top and below the basin at the bottom require a little agility with shoes so as to save your feet.
If you can make a day of it with friends it would be best case scenario as they have covered picnic areas that are first come, first serve.
We really enjoyed our time at the falls but...... would not make a special trip to return from out of town. This should be a place to consider only if your in the vicinity.

Nice short hike but worth the time

By johnbwy |

This is a little bit of a drive out of Carlsbad but it is worth it. The day we were there, a lot of people were at the falls. There is nice picnic area at the parking area at the bottom of the trail. The falls go into a nice sized pool and then flow out and the stream disappears into the ground a short ways downstream. There are nice hiking trails around and above the falls, bring some water. I am not sure how far upstream you can go, we never found the headwaters of the creek.

Worth the drive

By Candi S |

This waterfall area is about 32 miles from the highway on an open range, winding, paved road. The signage is not great so pay close attention when you see the sign that says there is a fee area for the Sitting Bull Falls and note the tiny turn arrow on the post. The fee is $5 and they honor various passes. There is a nice concrete viewing area very close to the parking lot but also short paths that lead to the top and bottom of the falls . Several nice picnic shelters and nice toilets. No entry after 5PM. Worth the drive!

Beautiful.

By Faith |

Beautiful drive to get to this beautiful little place in the middle of nowhere. Only drawback was there are leaches in the water.

small hike to falls

By sandraleed |

the falls aren't that spectacular but the little lake at the bottom is worth the 1 mile walk to it....Nice picnic area as well

April Trip

By Althea H |

Trip out there was interesting a lot of cows in the road but on the way back went a different way and it was better.

The falls are really nice and coming from Arizona nice to see running water.

Vacation

By sherry M |

I don't know if it was great or not because you drive FOREVER down what looks like a deserted road. We only had a,little over a,quarter tank of gas so when we saw the sign saying "you are now entering the
the forest " we turned around. There was no wifi/cell service to check how far away we were from the falls. Apparently we were only about 7 minutes away when we turned around. The distance on the signs is WAY off. So if you go....go with LOTS of water (there is,NOTHING on the road) and a FULL tank of gas. And yes you will think you past it...just keep going (IF you have gas and water )

Lovely place

By greenjay1 |

Beautiful waterfalls and scenic area. Lots of history in this area. Much of the ride is through open range; so watch for cattle on road. Parking is limited and can get crowded on holidays. Enjoy a dip in the cool waters.

oasis in the desert

By eaterofallthingsgood |

if you are in the area this one of a kind spring that has been there for ever . take kids there with swimsuit and they will love you ; bring burgers or hot dogs also

A gem in the middle of nowhere.

By Linda G |

This is a place we visit often. Beautiful falls in the desert. A nice place to hike, or just to enjoy the beautiful Falls. An easy walk to the falls. Nice shelters for your picnic lunch. Hiking trails above the falls and nearby in the Lincoln National Forest.

No access after 4pm!

By WorldTravelerTC |

We drove almost an hour off of route 285 thinking we would arrive well before the park's posted 5pm close, only to find a closed gate with a sign saying no entry after 4pm... could you not post that clear up by the highway?!? Ugh, a waste of time due to ill placed signage.

Beautiful

By racing2travel |

Nice view of the falls. It takes about 30 minutes to get there as it off the highway. However once there the falls are beautiful.

Worth the drive!

By Michelle C |

Having read the reviews, we had already decided to visit the falls...but after driving on that lonely (albeit scenic) gravel road, complete with cows grazing on and along the road, we were starting to have second thoughts. I'm so glad we went! The park really is a gem in the middle of the desert. We were pleasantly surprised! It was a fairly easy and short walk to the falls, where you can swim in the cool water and roam around the rocky terrain. There are several covered picnic areas with bbq grills. The restrooms were spotless, and there wasn't a spec of trash anywhere--kudos to the park rangers who maintain this park!! There is a $5 fee to visit the park, use the envelopes at the visitors sign (honor system). We had an enjoyable afternoon--so glad we went!

So beautiful!

By HJL968 |

I LOVED the visit to sitting bull falls. It is a long drive, but totally worth it. Pack a lunch, tour the area (not large) hike up to the top to see where the falls come out of the mountain (SO BEAUTIFUL) and have a picnic at the lovely picnic areas provided.

Beautiful Place To Picnic!

By Michael H |

Pack up the coolers and your favorite eats and head up to Sitting Bull Falls. About an hour or so from Carlsbad and peaceful drive through the Chihuahuan Desert. Picnic tables and bar-b-que grills are there for your family to use and enjoy. The are is small though so get an early start .
Most visitors spend time hiking or just getting wet as the water runs over the top of the falls. Don't be expecting gushing waters like you see in Hawaii or Africa! You are in the dessert you know.

great day trip for people of all physical abilities!

By Kathy W |

this location is an oasis in the middle of the desert! they have a paved walk path as well as more challenging activities. it is a wonderful surprise! All should see this, and is worth the drive. then go over to Queens and have one of the best hamburgers and desserts. Great day.

Mrs.

By Carla Y |

Although it's a little out of the way, it is amazing that in such a desolate area of the state that an oasis like this can still be found with a spring gushing up out of the rocks feeding a waterfall that drips into a relaxing crystal clear pond with a rock bottom.
Being a National Park, the park is kept very nice and clean, including the bathroom facilities.

Oasis in New Mexico

By coxjo2016 |

It takes approx 40 miles to get there but it is very much worth the travel. Lovely shelters for picnics.
Short walk to see bottom of falls. Can hike from there but be careful. I slipped and fell. New name for place is "Fat Cow Falls."

Great day trip with the pup!

By kelcmons |

This was a great experience! It was a totally fun day trip from Clovis, NM. It took us about 4 hours to get there and it was a great day trip. It was definitely worth the long drive in one day. We are two outgoing relatively fit individuals and we took our 2 year old lab mix pup. The entrance is a bit back in the mountains, and you think you are there over and over again before you actually get there. The park is much more developed than we expected, there was parking and covered patios for barbeques and the trail to the falls were concrete and totally stroller friendly.....but we didn't do that first. We did something even more awesome first...the trail volunteer gave us a recommendation to hike to the top and hike on the trail. It was a beautiful view from the trail, and at the top of the hill there were nice little pools, however, the best find was if you took the trail across the creek and then when you got to the cattle fence, do not go through the cattle fence but instead turn right and take the game trail along the fence and you will find two hidden pools all to yourself. One of the pools is even partially in a cave. The hike there is full sun, but the destination is shaded and awesome for dogs. The water was AMAZINGLY clear, we could see fish and frogs in the water. We all swam, myself and boyfriend and our pup. We brought along a tennis ball and were throwing it in the water and she was jumping off the rocks after it. It was incredibly beautiful. It is a romantic spot for a couple and we've heard almost always quiet. This was the spring area that fed the rest of the park and the beautiful falls at the beginning of the park. This is a great place to bring kids and a picnic and food etc. We should've packed a couple of beers and lunch and we couldve spent all day. If you want to camp in the area everything is far from the site and is primitive. There isn't anything else really close (food etc) so it is best for a day trip. The water was beautiful and worth every second, you wont understand how awesome until you go! It is so hard to describe the natural beauty.

Worth a detour is you have the time

By KVOM |

We love waterfalls so the 36 mile drive from the highway turnoff was not a problem. Good paved road all the way to the falls.

A classic desert oasis

By RLaurenceDavis |

A long drive, but worth it. This is truly a desert oasis. Even in the dry season, the water tumbles down over the limestone into crystal clear pools at the bottom. The sound is soothing and the water droplets and spray sparkle in the sunshine. This is all the more remarkable for the desert plants that inhabit everything just a few feet away from the falls and the outlet stream. The area right around the falls and the pools are lush with vegetation. Easy walk in. Easy access to the area below the falls. Nice, but steep trail to the top and the springs that feed the falls.

Beautiful place

By Susana M |

It is a very beautiful place, there are places for picnic, it has clean restrooms, and the falls are very beautiful. You have to drive about an hour to get in there, but totally worth it. The only complain I have is that the parking is very small. If you do not find where to park, they have another parking but it is very far.

Wonderful spot on a hot day

We really enjoyed our day at Sitting Bull Falls. There are several areas to swim in. The water is cold which is very nice on a hot day.

A really nice quiet detour away from Carlsbad caverns in the middle of the winter. Nice trails pretty falls and great old CCC Stone buildings.

Great picnic

By luckyr7063 |

We drove out to Sitting Bull on a Sunday morning. It is about a 45 min drive from the highway to the park. The park opens at 8:30, we were about 15 mins early so we waited for the gates to open, and they did promptly. The on site campground host is a delightful man who is very friendly and helpful. He suggested hikes and added that we could swim if we wanted. Make sure you have enough gas and food as there are no gas stations or restaurants for miles.

Beautiful waterfall in the desert!

By Cindy T |

I have lived in NM for over 13 years, less than 2 hours away from this beautiful waterfall, and yet had never made a visit until recently! It is well worth the drive! We took our kids, 11 and 8, and they loved it as well. There is a paved sidewalk with rail down to the bottom of the falls, making it an easy walk for most people. We arrived around 11 a.m. And mostly had the place to ourselves for a while! There are several very nice covered picnic areas and one large rock building with several tables that would be perfect for a family reunion or gathering. It is nice, clean and well maintained. As far as the falls themselves, it may be small compared to larger falls, but I found it just beautiful! It is a 150 ft drop from the top of the falls to the bottom. WARNING: the water is very cold, even if the weather is warmer, so bring extra clothes and a nice warm towel if you plan to swim (which my kids and husband did). If everyone in your group is fit, consider taking the small trail up to the top of the falls! Not for the out of shape as it almost kicked my butt and I kept having to stop, but it was worth it to see the view up there, the beautiful clear pools and explore the caves just beyond the falls! Follow it up with a nice picnic, and enjoy!

Beautiful Getaway!

By roseberry3 |

My girlfriend and I came to Carlsbad to celebrate our year anniversary! We heard about Sitting Bull Falls and were excited to check it out! The drive was definitely off the beaten path but we enjoyed it. The road goes through an Open Range so you get to see cows roaming right next to your car as you drive through the mountains. Once we arrived at the Sitting Bull Falls a Ranger approached us where we paid $5/car. We decided to check out the paved walkway that takes you to the bottom of the waterfall. It was breathtaking! We jumped in the water right under the waterfall! It was beautiful and clear water. We hung out there for a bit and then decided to walk of the trail which is a tougher terrain but has steps carved out of the rocks. We made it to the top but we're too worn out (I have a bad back) to make it to the top of the waterfall which was a little higher up. So we made our way back down and headed back to the hotel. I would recommend this place to anyone! A lot of families were there having a lot of fun as well!

worth the trip

By Jim M |

Took about 45 minutes to drive to falls. Hard to believe there was water in the middle of the desert, but there is. Take your bathing suits and a picnic lunch. Not a big swimming hole, but the families that were there, were having fun. Only cost $5, had nice picnic shelters.

Worthy of the Efforts

By RayneLa |

SITTING BULL FALLS
Very nice waterfall. Not big water flow in March but still very pretty. About 150 foot drop. Unique waterfall. Easy paved walk to fall, about ¼ mile from parking lot that had very clean bathroom facilities. $5 entry fee. The entire trip there, we were concerned because we did not see one drop of water, but magically the waterfall appeared in the desert. Nice picnic pavilions.
The day before we saw Carlsbad Caverns which I definitely recommend. Suggest the Natural Entrance to get into caverns and definitely take a guided tour besides the Big Room. They are very interesting and educational. After Sitting Bull Falls we went to The New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamagordo, NM. and White Sands National Monument

A Nice Spot

By klm611 |

Great picnic spot with covered shelters from the sun. As the falls are spring fed I think you will always find water but at some times of the year more than others. An easy walk to the falls from the parking lot. Scenic drive in. Check hours before you go. Park closes early

Worth the drive!

By ballison123 |

It's a waterfall in a completely unexpected environment. We were unaware, but if we would have known you can swim in it, we would have packed out bathing suites. Bring a cooler and stay a while, there are tons of covered picnic areas with charcoal grills provided. Fun for everyone in the family!

Remote

By kikip11 |

Gorgeous well kept little park in the middle of no where. It takes about an hour from the main road. Lovely falls run down to a little pool you can put your feet in. Picnic pavilions or just bring a picnic.

The true meaning of "oasis"!

By lessard |

The best kept secret in New Mexico. Takes awhile to get there, but it is worth it. Who would have thought there could be a waterfall northwest of Carlsbad?! There aren't even any rivers! Call before you go...could be closed due to fires in the past.

A lovely oasis

By montanapescado |

It is so worth the drive out to this glorious oasis area in what looks like a highly unlikely location. The falls, pools and surrounding amphitheater are all beautiful. There's lots of nooks and crannies to poke about if you've a yen to explore. There are great, if occasionally strenuous, hiking trails to be had as well.

Coolest place in eastern NM

By medic752 |

This place is awesome. It's an oasis in the middle of a dessert and is so much fun to swim around in. You wouldn't ever think this place was here.

Beautiful

By suebruno |

The vistas on the way are as beautiful as the falls. The walk to the Falls is an easy one, not a hike. Plan on wearing good shoes because you will want to walk below the falls on the rocks. Be sure to have gasoline and food. There are other hiking opportunities.

A great place to walk around in solitude and also to explore

By RADARSHE |

What a great place to explore and be one with nature. Quite except for the birds and insects. What a location to just chill out and relax. Be careful depending on time of day and time of year for "critters." Spring and fall are the best time to visit to beaty the heat. Certainly take in the caverns while you are here.

Wowza!

By John S |

It was crazy how in the middle of no where this place is! It was so worth it! The family loved it! Just taking everything in was amazing!, there is plenty of Day use spots and there is actual bathrooms

Oasis in the desert

By Harley1947_10 |

This water source in the middle of the Sonoran desert is a pleasant surprise. It has been around for decades. My mother used to take her students to the falls as a spring field trip. Very interesting eco system. Well worth the trip... make sure to take your own snack or lunch and drinks because there aren't any food services available. Generally free of snakes but you never know... be cautious.

Great lunch spot

By Stanley J |

The Sitting Bull Falls is a beautiful side trip. It was a WPA project in the 1930's which was damaged in a forest fire a few years back. It is now fully repaired and has around a dozen open stone buildings. Each with two large picnic tables, one with four. In addition each building has two cooking grills. The walk to the falls is a concrete path that is accessible to anyone and not very far away. If you are more ambitious be. There are several hiking paths from the parking lot. The water from the falls creates a river that disappears half a mile away. Very nice geology and good for any age. It take an hour to get there from Carlsbad. I say later that it would be good for 1 - 2 hours. Could be seen in an hour. But with a hike or lunch it could be 2,3 or 4 hours.

Very upset. Road is completely closed by foot and by automotive transport. Very sad!!!!

By Brenda O |

The falls are closed till October, there's a fine of $500 dollars for traspacing by feet. And a warning signed for a $5000 dollar fine or 1 year in jail for traspassing. Do not drive it will be closed.completely closed lots of warning signs!!!!

Well worth the long drive

By Rick B |

Sitting Bull Falls is absolutely gorgeous and well worth the long drive across the desert to get there. The water temperature was comfortable especially given the hot weather.

spot for swimming and picnicing

By JanP461 |

This is a nice attraction, but something you could easily miss without a second thought. The spot seems to be a favorite with local families who want to picnic and swim for the day (we were there on a Sunday). The picnic area is very nice, with quite a few picnic tables in brick enclosed, shaded areas. The walk to the Falls from the parking lot is short. The Falls itself was nice, not spectacular. The water pools, and there were lots of people swimming or walking over the rocks. There is limited parking in the lot at the trail to the Falls, and when that lot is full, the entrance gate to the park is closed. Cars then line up at the gate and are allowed in only when another car leaves. There is a small parking lot at the entrance gate, though. If you park in that lot and walk to the Falls (about 15 minute walk at an average pace), you don't have to wait in line and you don't have to pay a park fee (fee is only for cars entering the park).

Beautiful Stop

By CMDO2014 |

Defintely worth the trip. Honestly, the ride from Carlsbad to the Waterfalls isn't that bad. Its a solid hour, but I certainly didn't think it went on forever nor did I feel like I was never going to get there.

Parking lot is small. Arrive early as the secondary parking lot is a decent hike away from the main lot. Bring $5 for cash to park.

Covered picnic table areas with grills are availabile on a first come first serve basis. If you plan to use one, bring some extra towels/stuff to leave at the table to reserve it. People seemed to leave tables alone that were 'claimed'. There are a few trees offering shaded grass areas, too. Bathrooms are also located near the parking lot and picnic tables.

There is a paved walkway to the acutal waterfalls. Not much of a hike, but not right at the parking lot, either. It ends at an overlook for those not looking to go into the water.

Steps lead you down to the pools of the waterfall. You'll be climbing over and across large rocks and depending on the time of day, it will be full sun. Defintely want to wear water shoes and sunscreen.

Parts of the pools are just ankle deep, however, other parts are much deeper and small children/non swimmers should be aware. Also, even with water shoes, the rocks under water a slick. It doesn't take much for you to slip and slide and end up in the water.

We didn't go past the first area of pools, however, from what others said, there are more pools and you can walk farther down into the river and play in the water there, too.

We saw people in bathsuits as well as hikers just looking to cool off in full clothes. There is no where to privately change your clothes at the waterfall. You'll have to walk back to the parking lot and use the bathrooms.

Defintely go earlier in the day; we arrived before noon and got one of the last spots in the main parking lot. By the time we left (about 2 hours later) the lot was full and people were walking up from the 2nd lot.

Desert Surprise

By Dean H |

From Carlsbad NM expect to drive 40 miles. Plenty of desert life to see. When you get close to the falls, you will enter a valley lush and green. Hmmmm...must be water somewhere around here. You will finally enter the park which has a half dozen shaded picnic areas ( usually taken on the weekends) and a new concrete path that leads you to an observation deck. Still no waterfall, but evidence abounds with the green canyon walls you are surrounded by. Very picturesque. So the family and I begin a walk up this path and I'm looking down in the canyon below ( maybe 75') and my kids yell turn around and look up. I turn around and OMG a 150' water fall majestically flowing from the canyon rim over the cliff into a pool of water where several peeps were swimming.
Totally unexpected. We spent the next few hours swimming, exploring (falling on slippery rocks..BE CAREFUL) and thoroughly enjoying ourselves. If you in the area...go see the falls the area has been well rebuilt and worth the trip

Oasis in the middle of the dessert

By chmc2013 |

As people have said it is off the beaten track but it a great opportunity to see the vastness of the dessert. There were several places where the cows were on the road. Had to stop and maneuver through them- they were not moving. The waterfall is only a bit more than a trickle, but pretty none the less. The kids were having a great time in the water!!!

By the way- a senior national park pass waived the parking fee.
I accidentally dropped my passport and the ranger brought it to me at the falls. Thanks so much!!! Above and beyond.

Beautiful Waterfalls

By Don A |

This a 2 hour round trip from Carlsbad. Once you get there, there is a walking path, with some incline, to get to the falls. It is beautiful! If you have the time, this is worth seeing.

A waterfalls in the desert?

By CJGinNM |

My husband was rather skeptical when I suggested this. We’re rather in a period of drought and he was SURE there would be no water to see - HAH. There are the falls and once you get to the parking area, the walk in to the falls is short and easy.

Only complaint - we’re still in a pandemic and this part of the state isn’t big on social distancing or masks. So while there are steps to go to the base of the falls and actually paddle around in the pond, the many people there with no masks meant we weren’t going to put ourselves at risk.

Beautiful spot, cool geology, very happy we went there.

CLOSING TIME

By noshvegas |

The hours have changed. It is supposed to be open until 4p through Sept then closing time changes to 3:30p in October. I arrived at 3:35 and the park had closed. I was 0.6 miles from the falls where the gate was down. After driving from Roswell, I wish they at least kept the hours in the signs. TripAdvisor lists closing time as 5p but that must be old data.

Average

By Esperanza P |

Its ok, wasn't impressed the waterfall was really small and the water level in the pools was low. It was a nice walk to the fall. Its worth going there once but not enough to go a second time.

Beautiful! !

By Jgfish1 |

The Sitting Falls reopened in May and we were thrilled. The drive out is very scenic and the falls were great. We hiked up to the top of the falls also. Would highly recommend!

A magical, hidden gem. Totally worth it!

By Julia |

Unexpected. Stunning. Completely worth the drive. Very short easy hike to the base of the waterfalls. Could easily spend 2 to 3 hours. Upper hike to the top was more strenuous, but worth it to swim in a brisk but natural pool. Do not miss!

Find True Quiet

By moosgang2 |

I came here three times during my month long stay at Carlsbad. Hike 1 mile into any one of their trails and you will find perfect quiet (except for occasional bird or insect sounds). My favorite hike was the one up to the source of Sitting Bull Falls (Trail 68 and back on Trail 214). 3 miles up the mountain, then 3 miles back. A special treat was a large thicket of raspberries ripe for eating halfway up.
I was the ONLY ONE I saw on every trail. It was truly lovely.
Bring plenty of water during the summer, at least 1 x 16oz bottle per mile you plan to hike. If you plan to hike Trail 226, be sure you understand their marker system, inform the park ranger of your plans in case you get lost, and plan for extra time in case you lose the trail. The trail was well marked until getting down to the canyon bottom between junctions f and g.

Lovely spot!

By Maureen R |

Definitely worth the drive from Carlsbad. We practically had the place to ourselves the morning we went and it was just a lovely experience. It's peaceful and a great place to get awesome photos!

Oasis in the Desert

By BB B |

When I first visited Carlsbad NM and looking for something to do, I was told to go visit Sitting Bull Falls. The drive through the desert makes it hard to believe this little gem is just a short drive from town. Hidden in the twisting canyons is Sitting Bull Falls. Great picnic area, wide walkways, rest room facilities, and a pretty little waterfall and creek to wade into on a hot desert summer day!

Would recommend to everyone! Stunning!!!

By Amy Y |

This place is phenomenal. It does feel like you drive forever but it’s a lovely drive. Make sure you have a full tank of gas and also shoes for hiking. Getting to the falls is not difficult but once you get in there you are most certainly going to want to explore the magic! Would recommend to everyone!

A cool and green surprise!

By raiderthelab |

Sitting Bull Falls is a local secret! It is worth the trip! The falls themselves are beautiful and the pools are crystal clear. Since it is a popular place, you must get there early for a picnic table or a close parking space. There is an entrance fee of $5.00 per vehicle. There are several hiking trails above the falls. We took the one to the springs themselves. A great hike and very beautiful! We will add this to our short list for our area! Great place and the Forest Service maintains the site very well. Very clean considering the foot and picnic traffic! The forest service rangers were very helpful and knowledgeable. We will definitely go again!

Beautiful and accessible falls

By ChrisCgeo |

These falls are beautiful. It's an oasis in the middle of the desert. I love that you can get to the falls, play in the water, and smell the flowers. Lots of small pills are hidden around. Have fun exploring. There's running water and fully functional bathrooms which were very clean. Lots of covered picnic benches and plenty of parking. The road is paved.

This is a must do if your in the area. We stayed at Brantley lake and it has hookups and a great view of the lake.

Well done upgrades, nice walking path and picnic shelters

By Mike M |

One of the few remaining artesian spring waterfalls left in NM. After a fire some years back, the tourist facilities were ruined, but were subsequently rebuilt. Watch out for the squirrels, if you leave your food out and walk to the falls, they will come to the picnic shelter and help themselves.... they particularly like sandwich makings.

Day trip

What a beautiful place. The walk up to the falls is nicely paved. If you want to have a picnic they have great covered patios with tables.

Beautiful place to visit

By bssam2 |

It took us a while to get there but the drive was fine and we finally got there everything is so nice and clean and there are areas to picnic before you get to the falls and there were hikers around there and it was just lovely and had a nice time along with our miniature Dachshund

Beautiful area when you get there.it is very long drive but worth it.Great area to picnic too!Make sure your gas tank is full and bring water and food

Read the reviews

By Mike T |

Don't make the mistake we did. Read what the reviews say. This is an excellent spot to spent at least half a day if not more. Take a picnic, take your swimwear and towels and spend time in the water, We just read that it was a nice place to visit and didn't read any further. You drive for what seems to be forever on a lone desert road wondering if you are even going the right way and saying to yourself - how the heck are there any falls out here in this desolate desert? If going on a weekend or busy time, get there before noon. The lot does fill up fast. $5 to get in, exact change only.

A true desert oasis!

By lemmonlimey |

We visited on a hot day and found the falls to be cool and refreshing. The ranger on duty, Michael, was very helpful. He informed us that the falls run year round and suggested a shady spot to sit & enjoy the sounds of the running water. The only down-side was that this is a busy place and some people can be quite rude. But that doesn't change the fact that this is a beautiful place. I would visit again!

Beautiful waterfall

By gemanale |

We first climbed to the top of the waterfall, which gave us a great view of the mountains from this vantage point. There is a small lagoon and my grandkids enjoyed a very cool swim. If you're physically able to, I highly recommend this hike to the top. Down by the waterfall there is plenty of room on the rocks to have a picnic, which we did, after taking a dip in the lagoon. Standing below the actual waterfall is an awesome experience, especially on a hot, sunny day. Bring plenty of sunscreen and be sure to stay hydrated!!

Beautiful spot

By ryan o |

Great place once you get there. The drive in is breath taking at spots(once you’re close to the park). If your gps maps you to take 408 road do not take it. It’s rough and twisty, open range territory. Easiest access is from north of Carlsbad off of 285 near Brantley lake state park. Take queens hwy (137). Makes the drive much more pleasant. We were coming from Carlsbad caverns and gps directed us down 408. Google maps then lost its way briefly along the way. Once I kept driving past the field it told me to turn into it found its way again. It would’ve been faster to driven the long way around than to take that road though.

Nice waterfall

This is a good place to hike or if you want to picnic or just take in the view they have covered tables nice waterfall gets really packed in the summer beware

Great little waterfall and pool!

This is a little oasis in the middle of the desert! Definitely a place to visit if you have the time!

Sitting Bull, climbing, cows & wild horses

By James H |

Visited the falls after realizing that it was too late to visit Carlsbad Caverns today. It was about a 30 minute drive, not bad. Went with friends & family, went to the top of the bluff and also took photos by the bottom of the falls. Might picnic there before moving on.

Beautiful Oasis

By Cara |

As I talked to a local working at a hiking store, he mentioned this park to me, speaking of a beautiful waterfall and breathtaking scenery. Needless to say, the first thing i did when I got in my car was put this park into my GPS and take the journey there. First off, this park is definitely off of the beaten path...like really far off. Numerous times I was pretty sure that I was driving into uncharted territory! Although after a treacherous drive through Dark Canyon Road during a thunderstorm, I finally made it. And let me tell you...it was worth it. I arrived at the park a bit later in the afternoon and was met by an enthusiastic park ranger who readily explained their favorite parts of the area. Strapping on my backpack I quickly ventured over the the waterfall and was taken aback by it. Here in the middle of the desert, was a beautiful, lush, green environment teeming with life and tranquility. Accompanied by mapped trails and great scenery, this park is one I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a great place to go hiking and explore nature.

Refreshing stop

By pedave33 |

If you are staying in Carlsbad and visiting the caverns this place is a nice to stop. The drive is a bit out of the way and we did lose service while getting back there so have a map or general idea of its location. The falls are beautiful with a quick walk from the parking lot and $5 bucks for entrance. We ended up getting here on a Monday evening near closing time. Families in swimwear with towels were packing it up, so there was only a handful of us there. Looks like a great place for kids to wade and splash in the water. With kids and a picnic I could see spending an afternoon. With two adults and no picnic, an hourish.

Surprising Oasis

By tshadday |

Our group enjoyed the Sitting Bull Falls, especially because it contrasted so greatly from the desert landscape surrounding it. Although the volume of water was decreased, it was still a very enjoyable site to enjoy. Be aware that it is a bit of a drive in a remote location.

Watch out for the right turn to Sitting Bull Dr

By Tien N |

Once turning left on 137, be sure to make a right turn to Sitting Bull Dr (the picnic tables but no sign). Beautiful desert falls! We visited during the Thanksgiving break and pretty much had the place to ourselves. The hiking trail by the fall was fantastic. A must do if visiting Carlsbad.

Beautiful place

By Joan M |

It was a long drive from our campsite but one of the prettiest spots we’ve been to. It’s not easy to find as our GPS, iPhone and Garmin all gave us different directions. The route we took was not clearly marked and we went by the turn-off before we realized it. Had to make a upturn to get back to our road but after that it became easier. Some parts of the road were a bit rough. We got to the falls and had our lunch there. They have nicely maintained grounds. The stairs up to the falls are as steep as some I’ve climbed. The falls are calming and beautiful. We were the only ones there at the time and enjoyed the quiet and peace. A spiritual spot I would say.

Fun day trip

By ELKsquared |

This was a great place to hike and hang out with the kids. Very short walk to the falls, which were great for wading and playing in even in the winter. We had to drag our kids (8 and 10) away since they were having so much fun. Also a nice hike above the falls. A bit of a climb at first, but levels out into an easier trail. Very nice picnic area as well. The only thing you have to watch for is the time - they seem very serious about the gate closing.

Oasis in the Dessert

By awestCentennial |

Cooled down at Sitting Bull Falls. Located 30) miles outside of Carlsbad, NM. This was an easy drive through scubby desert to a refreshing 150 ft. waterfall into a small pond. Locals were enjoying the coolness.

A little out of the way but worth the trip

By Darryl L |

Sitting Bull Falls is a great day trip and picnic area. Though off the beaten path, it is well worth the drive to see this natural wonder. Kids and adults alike will have a great time.

Don't forget your swimsuit!

By Fearlessphil |

This is a great little out of the way place to spend an afternoon. It has picnic tables and bathrooms but really no staff. Bring your own food and drinks but please clean up after yourselves. This is a pristine place and needs to stay that way.

Nice cool oaisis in the desert.

By Jean S |

Went here the first day after hotel check in. It is a nice area with the water fall. Unlike some, this one was very easy to walk to. You can swim here,.

A hidden jem in a harsh environment.

By Gary S |

A little off the beaten path but well worth the drive. a 165 ft waterfall in an environment where you would not expect to find such a beautiful natural feature.

A lovely day trip

By James G C |

A very nice state park. $5 for day use. Nice walk. Low water flow over the falls at this time of year.

Surprisingly good

By WWmGR2rt |

Needed something to do near Carlsbad, as we wern't able to schedule an extra tour. Chose this mostly because it was north of town, where we were heading. Turned out to be well worth the drive. Very photogenic.

Surprisingly beautiful

By LM80634 |

Lovely oasis in the desert! Driving up to it, even walking up to it, you can't tell what's ahead. Beautiful falls, beautiful pools of water. We were there late on a winter's day, so nearly had the place to ourselves. Very different from a hot summer's day, I would imagine. Well worth the drive and the nominal fee to get in.

Great diversion...

By archangel7m |

32 miles one way off of US 285 north of Carlsbad. Last few miles had dozens of sharp turns & switchbacks. Was worth the trip. Great picnic area and easy walk to the falls. Beautifully remote. Admission free w/ Nat'l Parks lifetime Pass, but fill out the payment envelope w/ parking pass or the attendant will "ticket" your car.

Great off the beaten path spot

By cuz77 |

If you want to really see New Mexico then this is the spot to see. Nice scenic drive to an absolutely beautiful set of falls.

Very beautiful spot

By Ples R |

A out of the way trip, Road signs to the place are not that great but I think it is worth the visit. Lots of covered picnic areas to eat at with grilles. Overlook to the falls is pretty much accessible to everyone including handicapped. You can get down to the pools or take a short hike to the top of the falls and follow it back to the springhead. Only 4 people there when I visited. 5 dollar fee unless you have a national park pass.

Nice Hike

By Edgar S |

It's ok for a hike and if you're into desert landscapes, I have to say Chihuahua is far better though.

Still closed?!

By NickCafe |

Drove 11+ hours from Colorado to climb at Sitting bull falls. Very disappointed to learn that it is apparently still closed and has been for many months despite apparent representations to the contrary. (See Brenda O's review.). Come on Lincoln National Forest, do your job and open the Falls.

A real getaway on a hot day

By Anja H |

You can only drive in the area until 5pm and have to get out at 6pm. So we were there at 4pm and it was crowded till 4.30pm, but then we were almost alone. It was stunning beautiful! The water was cold but it was really amazing. You'll see many cows on your way back to Carlsbad. Wonderful getaway.

Beauty

By Angela F |

Absolutely breath taking. So beautiful. Enjoyed our visit to Sitting Bulls Fall. A must see if in Carlsbad,NM. We will make this a yearly trip.

Delightful surprise

By Kathleen S |

Drive a long long way through the middle of nowhere on a twisty winding road. Watch for the free ranging cows! NOT suitable for large RVs! Arrive at the parking area , shockingly there will be other people there who also drove and drove. Short walk to the fall lookout platform and stairs down to the fall pools. Absolutely beautiful! Per the volunteer worker hoards of people come in season but in the middle of February there were only a few. We enjoyed our picnic down by the base of the falls but there are quite a few covered tables with grills near the parking area. There are trails up to the top of the falls but we passed on that climb.

Wife loves falls so we went WAY out of our way to see these.

By ForestGrove |

Not a rainy time so falls were slow, but flowing. These are WAY out in the middle of high desert plains near the Guadalupe Mtn foothills, at least an hour from Carlsbad or the Caverns, Hikers would probably like the area. This is a Day Use Area but takes Senior Pass.

Great place to visit

By BoerneBob |

There are three falls and fun hikes. Even a wheelchair can be pushed on the cement walkway to the falls. It’s a long drive but well worth it.

Historical Falls in the Lincoln National Forrest

By P R |

This larger area was once part of a large sea and is 100's of million years old. In more recent history this was an area occupied by at least the Sioux and Apache's. The CCC did work here during the depression and it is a series of streams and pools leading to a final 150 foot water fall with many hiking trails and climbing challenges which lead back up stream. The rangers don't care if you swim or wade in the ponds at the bottom of the falls. The Falls are located southwest of Carlsbad and close at dusk. We tried some of the climbing above the pools and a couple of the trails and it was delightful.

Pleasant Surprise in the Desert

By Linda D |

You don't expect to find two beautiful water falls in the middle of the desert. What a welcome change! And the falls are easily accessible on concrete sidewalks, close to parking.

Oasis in the desert!

By kris4913 |

Worth the drive from Carlsbad to see! We were there mid October and the falls were pretty active and there were only a few other cars there. For a Fall, the last entry is 3:30 or 4:00pm (I can't remember, several parks in the area have odd early closing times that I wasn't expecting) and you have to be out by 5pm so plan your time there correctly. We got there around 3:15 and stayed until 5pm. I would have like a little more time but definitely just devoting a couple hours there (plus driving time) is good plenty.

A nice day trip.

By Craig S |

My wife and I came to Carlsbad for a birthday trip. We made excursions out to the caverns, to Guadalupe Mtn NP, and to these falls. To get here we traveled west on the road toward El Paso, then north to the falls. It is desolate country, unchanged from long ago.
The falls were very pretty, rather unexpected in the surrounding dry country. There were fish in the pool below and the moss on the rocks was brilliant green. At the picnic area, shelters provide remarkable relief from the heat. And the restrooms were clean with flush toilets.
We completed our loop returning going first east, then back south after checking out the reservoir on the Pecos River.
It was a pleasant leisurely day.

Its lit

By foodislife3849 |

The drive out there is about an hour and its very secluded but the waterfall and surrounding area is beautiful. The trail to the top is lots of fun too if you're young and agile.

Super spot to explore

By peter e |

Spent a whole morning at these falls despite it being extremely windy at time. Good size car park and only short walk along a broad walk to falls themselves. Interesting to see and lovely spot to admire, but many other falls in the world far more impressive. However, it is not only the falls themselves and picnic bbq areas which this site has to offer as there are many trails leading off from it. Fortunately, the steep climb up cliff path from car park was well sheltered from wind. Path leads up to top of falls for view down. However, once reached the level plateau at first landing of cliffs I could easily have taken off in wind and by time reached overlook of falls, the only way one could approach was on all fours. Continuing on upwards, though you soon find yourself more sheltered again and pathway then leads down into secluded high valley where wind was almost abated. Really nice there as quite sunny too. Soon became obvious this path was quite well trod and led all along the valley next to the stream. Would have liked to explore further but already hours distance from car park and hadn't considered necessary to carry water. Surprisingly then, a large black cow appeared out of the hedge growth and looked at me as if to say what are you doing in my garden. Well I know this cow certainly didn't scale any cliff edges, so could only have come down by side of valley stream. Really nice place to be. Enjoy your visit and explore what I missed.

Literally an oasis !!!

By bigmule1972 |

If you are nearby, and want to swim with a waterfall, or just see a cool oasis...this is the place.

$5 per vehicle to enter for the day, and there are many picnic areas available.

We arrived at Carlsbad at 10am, left at 1:30...arrived at Sitting Bull at 3pm and left at 5...my kids (10 & 12) loved swimming in the water and it was great break for them.

The total swimming area is about the size of a hotel swimming pool, but we were the only ones there.

Definitely worth the drive if you like waterfalls.

Beautiful Falls

By warefam2018 |

This was a really neat place. The water was cold so we only put our feet in. Still enjoyable!! Watch out for random cattle in the road, the falls are a ways back in there. Main lot fills up quickly so get there early.

Oasis in the Desert

By usmcpride |

Went with the family, enjoyed a full day of exploring, trekking, hiking, and cooking. They have the cement tables, a cooking pit, and your very own area to sit and relax. Get there early, as this little local secret is now a pretty popular spot.
You go to the top and hang out in the pools from the water flow. Very great on a hot mid August afternoon. Clear, cool, and tranquil.. Make sure you can make the climb, its a little demanding, but can be done.
Place is clean, well kept. Very panoramic, and really cool when an isolated storm comes thru the canyon.
We been coming here for 15 years and never get disappointed.

It was so beautiful and refreshing. I did get bit by a leech and another lady saw one as well. Enjoy, just be mindful of that.

Stunning Falls

By JnS41 |

Beautiful hike to the top of falls with clear cold pools to dip your feet in. Park volunteer Steve was very informative and friendly.

Most likely better with more water

By Dan H |

This was a nice drive from the KOA we stayed at. The drive was worth it. The park needs to be updated. The signs are hard to read and the pass information is very outdated. The walk to the falls is easy even for those with limited distance. You can go right to the water and enjoy the falls. It was not running very hard but still worth the trip.

Long drive from Carlsbad!

By Ron A |

Don't visit on a weekend or holiday. Parking is limited in the area by the falls, when that fills up you will have to walk a half mile. It is a beautiful place to visit just be prepared for some inconvenience if you visit during the weekend. Water is cold and originates from a spring source at the top of the mountain.

Very nice park

By LEHankins |

You could spend the day at this park. Nice walkway to the falls with pools for swimming. Multiple picnic shelters with grills and clean restroom facilities. Only $5 to use the park. We were there on a Saturday and there were lots of people. The enjoyable drive to the park takes you to the middle of nowhere it seems.

Awesome!!

By sewol460 |

This place is amazing! Park Ranger was very nice and informative. Learned a lot and the scenery is terrific! Ranger encouraged getting in the water and experiencing the waterfall which we did. Amazing experience.

Go Mid Morning

By Gary M |

A nice side attraction before visiting the caverns. Couldn't resist cooling our feet in the pool below the falls. Our teenage son took a dip in the cool spring water.

We visited on a weekday mid morning. Fewer than 10 people were there. The ranger said the weekends are crowded.

There are rock covered picnic tables if you want to make/take lunch or take a break from the sun. Nice breezes flow through them.

Nice/clean relatively easy walk.

Do the honorable thing and pay the $5 bucks day use fee.

Nice Watterfall, but don't expect to hike

By Alexandra C |

Sitting Bull Falls is a nice place to visit. About 1h from Carlsbad City. There you don't really need to hike to arrive to the waterfall. It's a 10/15 min walk in a pavement trail. They offer spot for picnic, and barbecue. You also can jump into the water, so don't forget to bring your swimsuit.

Well, nice, but not worth the long drive

By David W |

If you live within 50 miles, I can imagine that this is a fun place to cool off. But the falls and stream are not really worth the admission and the long drive from Carlsbad.

A side trip worth taking!!

By Love2ChaCha |

It was the 3rd weekend of April when I visited Sitting Bull Falls. When you turn off the main highway be sure to note the signs you will see that say that it is an "Open Range" as there are cattle that will cross the paved road. The drive to the falls is beautiful. Once you reach the parking area, there is a nice restroom facility with flushing toilets. There are also several picnic shelters. There is a sidewalk that leads to the falls and it is a very short walk. You are able to go down to the falls and even stand underneath it, but the water is cold! Someday I plan to go back and take the 3-mile hike as the ranger told us there a few other natural artesian springs along the hike.

Pet friendly area with Jax the dog

By bgdiver1963 |

About 30 + miles out of Carlsbad, but worth the drive. Small 5.00 fee, but is pet friendly. Nice parking area, concrete walkways to falls. We did the trail that went above falls. Nice area. Thanks

Beautiful!!

By Kris |

It was so full and beautiful!! Worth the trip! Had little gems around it as well. So glad we got to see it. Thankful for the rain, the waterfalls were flowing!

Still closed apparently.

By BearHouseMomma |

It's still closed indefinitely. We've done the caverns and the zoo so we were looking for something to pass the afternoon. A nice couple in town suggested we make sure the falls were open before driving all the way up there. Glad we checked.

Lovely desert surprise.

By LCfam4 |

This is a nice, easy walk to beautiful falls. We went on a holiday weekend so it was too crowded for my liking, but overall it was still a lovely experience. The water is quite cold and parking is limited, but the falls are beautiful and worth the detour for us. You can also take a more strenuous hike to the top of the falls, but with 2 small kids we didn't attempt it this time.

Oasis in the Desert

By mary anne j |

It’s a bit of a drive from Carlsbad about an hour, but it’s worth the trip. We had a great time hiking this place. They have covered picnic table and pavilion for big family. No over night camping though. We noticed that there some area that they allow camping just outside the gate. The host did a great job keeping it clean, so folks that are visiting lets keep it that way! Our kids had a great time wading in the coooold spring water!

Amazing oasis in the middle of the desert

By Jenn G |

The long, but scenic, drive is well worth it! We spent the day visiting the beautiful falls, eating lunch, and hiking around the area. My kids and husband swam in the cold clear water. I had fun snapping all the pics! We grilled chicken and had a great picnic lunch. The facilities were very very clean. Restrooms have a/c. Afterward we hiked to the the top of the falls, which was steep, but doable even for a person terrified of heights like me.

Read before you go after hours

National forest. Omg more like overgrown weeds no trees we drove a back road with cows. thanks to gps and no signs. And got there after 400. Wish I would of known or I would of turned around. They had a closed gate and tireshredders in the other side. Never again will stick to the caverns and river next time

Fun hike

By tom c |

The falls is a long way from anything but worth the visit. Even my 5 year old was able to hike the trail make sure and bring picnic lunch there are several tables with grills

Refreshing oasis in the middle of nowhere!

By WallaceGang |

In early October our family took the remote drive out to Sitting Bull Falls. It's about an hour from the town of Carlsbad and if you take the route directly from Carlsbad Caverns, you will feel sure you are going nowhere. Much to our surprise, upon arrival, there is a pay station, info kiosk, and restrooms, as well as a sidewalk leading to the falls. The steps are paved and even someone who's not a good hiker could access the site from the car. More nimble adventurers can enjoy the crisp and beautiful pool at the bottom of the falls and can explore up and down the river, even scaling the rock walls a bit. I've traveled to many places around the world and Sitting Bull Falls was a unique location, well worth seeing if you enjoy waterfall play. In case you're wondering, It was warm enough the first week of October to enjoy the water. You could spend 15 minutes here (an hour to get here) just taking a peak, or pack lunch or snacks and spend several hours relaxing.

Beautiful falls, fun for kids

By RobintheWriter |

This place is about an hour from anywhere and totally worth the drive. We went in march and there were 4 💦 falls still flowing- it looks like there are several more. Great place for kids! Easy hike to view the falls, great little pool and rocks for kids to climb on. There’s a steeper hike for the more adventurous. Not sure which trailhead we were at- it was the 2nd place to park. $5 to park.

What a fantastic surprise!

By Amy C |

It's off the beaten path and worth every mile! My kids are 10 and 7 and loved all of it. The road is paved, windy and cow lined. The falls are a fun and let imaginations run wild. I was surprised that it cost $5 that wasnt listed anywhere. And there is a full time maintenance person to make sure you pay and that your car is refistered.

Very disappointing

By CasroHalub |

Although the drive there was long, I honestly enjoyed it the most. Very scenic route through the canyons. My whole drive there I was thinking, "man, I bet this is going to be a cool hidden wonder". Unfortunately I was mistaken. Once I made the "hike" up to the so called "falls" I literally thought to myself "wow, that's it?!" 1st of all, that was not a hike. It was a walk up a paved and railed walkway. 2nd, I was expecting numerous big waterfalls, but there was 1 skinny waterfall. Yes, it was 150ft high, but Iv'e definitely seen better falls. Now, I suppose if you brought your family or a few friends this would be a fun time playing in the shallow pools that are neat if you're talking about how they were formed. As a person who is interested in seeing impressive national parks, this was way low on my need to see list, but I let spontaneity take me here to check it out. Here's my last say on this: If you need a cool, natural place to bring the family to cool off, it might be worth coming here. If your are like me and want to see awesome national parks and wonders of the world, I would advise not wasting your time coming.

Just wonderful

By tawny1956 |

It was a long ride to this site, but the terrain is awe inspiring. We has a picnic lunch, then walked the short distance to the falls, which were breathtaking.

Great!

By melscar_2000 |

Great place to see. I would not plan it as an all day visit. Half day with picnic is good plan. It is very pretty, but it is in the middle of nowhere...so be prepared. Long drive, no cell service, have bathroom break before going!

Amazing

By SALLY F |

It is a little out of the way but totally worth seeing. Has a great picnic area and sidewalk to get you to the falls. Make sure you take water shoes and a swimsuit if you want to get wet. It is fun to explore.

Very cool spot

By Allen T |

We had a great time hiking and swimming. It was crowded on Labor Day weekend but I think normally it would be way less crowded.

Water falls in the desert.

By gsm1121 |

We drove to the falls from Carlsbad, NM. It was a pretty drive and we had some interesting experiences. I had seen open range in Arizona before but that was a long time ago. The cattle on parts of this drive we free roaming. They came right up to the road and sometimes in it. The road to the falls in like a grand prix race course full of curves. The falls is not vey tall but it is beautiful and unexpected in the desert. The picnic shelters were made of stone during the Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps and are as beautiful today as they were then.

Do NOT climb to the top

By William K |

We found out alot about Sitting Bull Falls from reading the reviews herein, especially about taking hyw 137 --- make sure you take this route. After having gone there I agreed with all the comments except for how there was no mention of how dangerous it is to walk/climb up to the top of the falls. I am not talking about the pool of water area that is an easy walk --- I am talking about the narrow, steep, difficult path up to the very top, where the water comes down. I found it so dangerous, I had to turn around. There is at least one spot that is a sheer drop-off with no handrail or sure-footing. Do not let your kids go up there and you stay down too. Every other part of the falls is wonderful.

not spectacular but nice

By rockhill2124 |

Interesting to find the falls and oasis out in the middle of arid land. Will not take your breath away but worth a visit.

Bring your swim suit!

By daniellemcl |

First time visiting with my two young boys, and we will be back! Awesome spot! We had a ton of fun climbing all over the rocks surrounding the many pools and swimming. The view in is beautiful, and the spot itself is picture perfect! Park ranger was friendly and informative, the bathrooms and picnic areas were SPOTLESS! And the drive in was paved the whole way- something that wasn't a deal breaker, but definetely easier on my little car. Make the drive!

Worth the drive!

By Deb A |

It took us a while to find the place--the turn-off off of the main road is easy to miss--but it was well worth the effort. This was one of the loveliest places we visited in this area! We were there on a very cold day, and each of us almost wiped out on the black metal grate you have to walk over on the path to the falls--it was VERY icy, slipper and dangerous--so be careful.

Delightful surprise!

By Kim R |

Beautiful oasis in the desert! The drive from Carlsbad was not bad, wasn't sure we were really going to see any falls when we first started out, but it was a delightful surprise when we actually got there and hiked up to the falls. Gorgeous park area, very clean nice shelters and bathroom. Great hiking above the falls as well. Highly recommend it!

first time ever visiting sitting bull falls and it was magnificent! we arrived fairly early and realized it didn't open till 8:30 lucky the air at the time was fairly cool and perfect for sleeping! it was very nice and clean and we met two extremely nice game wardens there and as you can see by the pictures we met their dog as well which was very photogenic and well behaved! it was a great time and i would highly suggest going! since they have recommended topics for writing a great review here they are. its a surprising spot that before driving down into the canyon you wouldn't expect to be there! we went as a fun trip for some pictures and for fun! what i liked most is the experience and the friendly people there! what i liked least, theres nothing that really screams bad but it was a small drive? not sure what else to put there honestly. as to what to bring, a sweater or hoodie if you plan to be early, some snacks and water, a camera for sure, extra socks and shoes (lots of slippery spots in some areas and we soaked ours) as for if its a short visit or all day event, i would say short to medium visit, we spent roughly 3 or four hours there, but with all that said i would still highly suggest going!

Nice view

The review is to advise anyone making plans to visit that the site is off limits due to the roads being damaged by several storms in 2013. As of June 2014 there are no plans to repair the roads and provide access to the site. Folks using ATVs and trail bikes may be able to access the area. Sad, because we had heard some great recommendations about the falls.

An Oasis in the desert!

First this is a long drive. While you drive there you will think “no way is there a waterfall around here!” But you would be wrong. There is a pretty box canyon with a pretty waterfall and a nice paved trail up to it. For the hiker there is some steep but cool looking hiking trails. Park shuts the gate at 4 so leave early.
