Lots of easy to hard hiking options

By Joyce V |

This area has trails for everyone and driving thru to get to some of the trails is a good option. The ranger station inside the park is very helpful. Early morning hikes or evening are best for optimal pictures and rock colors

Great Views

By Skimmey52 |

Amazing afternoon walking around the canyon. Some of the trails are clearly marked, but others are not. We ended up having to backtrack on a trail rather than do a loop because we couldn't figure out how the trail worked in reality while the map made it seem pretty easy. Still, very nice to see and some easy trails for those who aren't into major hiking!!

hikes near St George

By Allyn M |

We spent about a half a day here. We did the Butterfly trail and the Hidden Pinyon trail. The Butterfly trail took us to a small lava tube, we climbed down in and there was a small cave you could explore. Also there was an overlook, a small hill (petrified dune??) that you could climb. It wasn't too strenuous, just right for a couple of 50 year olds :) The Hidden pinyon was talked about a lot and it was a good hike also, but we preferred the Butterfly. We then took a quick walk to the Pioneer names, just a few names from the 1800's caved in the stone wall.

What a Gem!!!!!

This was an amazing state park with wonderful hikes. If you are in the St.George/Zion area this park is worth spending the day at. Loved it! Hiking for all levels.

Everything the big parks have, except the crowds

By danieloW7812SH |

My family met in southwest Utah for a week's vacation. We had visited the area about 15 years ago and had loved it. High on our to-do list was to return to Snow Canyon. It was as beautiful as we remembered - deep blue skies, red and white sandstone, petrified dues, volcano tubes and slot canyons. It was a summer Sunday but the place did not feel crowded at all. There were people around but you were never bunched in a group like a Zion and everyone disbursed when they hit the trails. We hiked the slot canyon at Jenny's Canyon, saw the petrified dunes and volcano tubes on Butterfly and Petrified Dune Trails. My favorite was at the suggestion of a park volunteer, Hidden Pinyon Trail. It had a little bit of everything from narrow slots through the red sandstone to wide open vistas. Look for a stand along the way that has a booklet that corresponds to numbers along the trail explaining plants and landscapes. When you come to the loop, go clockwise, its easier. None of the trails were what I'd call easy but none were overly difficult. We finished with everything mentioned here in maybe about 6 hours. We like to look around alot and I am much slower than I used to be. Be sure to bring plenty of water since it gets hot and there's not alot of shade. Zion is majestic, Bryce is otherworldly but Snow Canyon has a peace about it. Plus its easy to get there and costs only $10!

Incredible hikes through nature.

Snow Canyon State Park is a wonderful place to take a variety of hikes. We are fond of the Hidden Pinon trail. It is about a mile and a half round trip. We walk through rocky crags and beautiful vistas of the surrounding area. Well worth the time to into Snow Canyon.

Beautiful location

By Adventure pants |

Plenty of places to hike and explore with the kids, from sand dunes to slot canyons. We stayed in the TRU Hilton in St. George and then made the quick drive to Snow Canyon. It was a perfect day with little kids.

Teenagers Love It!!

By Vanessa S |

Excellent and so beautiful with a variety of trails to hike. You can't do it all in one day! We traveled with 5 teenagers, ranging from 12 to 18, and 3 adults. They loved it better than Zion because they were able to climb over everything (at our own risk and under our supervision). Be sure to pack a lunch, this park is well worth the stop and easier to get to from St. George and Mesquite than Zion!

Nice place to explore for $10 and close to St George

By J H |

This is our second time exploring Snow Canyon. There's a lot to explore, it gets quite hot during the day here. We hiked Petrified Dunes, Lava Flow to Overlook, and Jenny's Canyon. We spent about 3 hours here.

Petrified dunes is about an hour, there is a pathway for about half the way and then you just explore the dunes in which ever direction you want, so I just depends how much you wander. The dunes are very each to navigate/climb. They seem intimidating from a far but before you know it you've reached the top.

Jenny's Canyon is very short, it's slot canyon with a dead end. It's a cool view. I think the hike took maybe 30 minutes.

Laval flow/Overlook point. This a bit longer than the rest, maybe 1 hour-ish. Apparently you can get to very very top overlook point (it would be a crazy 360), a couple made it look so easy but we didn't got as high as them, the view is still good just not 360.

Very Accessible Walking and Biking Trails St George area

By djfurlong |

I traveled to St George in a cold January week and was happily surprised by our visit to this park. It was during the federal shutdown so we avoided Zion Park. Myself and my 30 yo son and his fiancé visited to view the lava tubes which are caves and openings created by an extinct volcano eruption. You are able to hike down into them, bring headlamps it is VERY dark and cell phone cameras wont work if you intend to go deep into the caves. You can still go to the opening to view the size of the caves with natural daylight. The park is visually stunning combination of red and white rock formations and you are able to climb up them easily wearing sneakers, due to the grip of the rock surface. This is easy climbing more of a stroll even for younger and older novices. There are also other very easy trails and the entry fee of $10 makes it very incredibly affordable. There is a bike trail that you can take from other parts of St George with a very steep grade. Or take your bike and park at one of the multiple parking ares. We stopped to see the Park staff to report hikers with dogs which are allowed in the park but not on some of the hikes as it disturbs the native wildlife. The Park staff were a pleasure to chat incredibly knowledgeable and took the time to make us feel welcome give us great information about the park and its camping areas. These look like a great bargain at $20 a night but reserve in advance online they fill up quick during the season. There are water and power hookups.

Should be a National Park!!

By NorthCarolina621 |

If this place was in another State, it would be a National Park. Great hikes in a variety of areas. This is a medium elevation desert. Not as cold as Zion in the winter, but still can be chilly. If you are traveling to Zion/Bryce, you should absolutely stop here for a day.

What a GEM!

By PamR2709 |

We heard about this from a FedEx guy while we were driving through. Sooooo glad we stopped!!! Absolutely gorgeous!!!! Desert, mesas, mountains, woods. Many trails of varying lengths and abilities.

An Amazingly Beautiful State Park

By Phyllis Y |

Unless you live in St. George, or are familiar with the area, you might never know about this absolute gem. This small State Park holds its own against some of the most beautiful National Parks across Utah. It’s only a short drive out of downtown St. George. The road goes right through the center of the park and there are hiking trails on both sides. There is a variety of hiking trails (short to long, easy to moderate) with breathtaking views in every direction. And it’s super clean & well maintained. A quick get away from the hustle & bustle of everyday life. If you are staying in the area, you simply must visit this State Park, and try both morning & afternoon, as the lighting conditions are different and equally picturesque.

Petrified Sand Dunes is where it's AT!

By Timothy Y |

Love the petrified sand dunes. You can probably spend a couple of hours wandering and exploring the area. We did do the 4 mile loop hike and saw an entrance for a lava tube. This is a pretty cool place and it's really close to St George. There isn't a lot of shade, so try to go early or late if you're going on a hot day.

Gorgeous State Park!

By Little Birdy |

I wish I had had a full day to explore Snow Canyon State Park, it's truly breathtaking and for avid climbers, a playground for freestyle climbing. During the summer/fall, it's best to go in the late afternoon, or early early morning, because the heat is HOT.

The rocks are gorgeous, the light is beautiful. Careful when you walk through brush, because the cactus spines and brush is no joke! Wear sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and drink plenty of water. I left the state park with a tons of great photos and a huge split down my thumbnail. Ouch! IT IS DRY! and beautiful!

pretty, small & hot

By milton260 |

We visited the park in the first week of July.

What we liked - Incredible scenery, nice picnic areas, covenient stop on our way from Vegas to the National parks in Utah.

What we didn't like - limited 'short easy' hikes, hikes were on soft sand which was burning hot - all out in the open sun (no shade) , ta very short scenic road- we allocated too much time to spend at this park.

Early Spring in the Canyon

By Kirsten D |

Snow Canyon was a pure delight! Awesome hiking and breathtaking sites awaited us! So many different hikes to choose from. Many people were biking the great trails below us and the desert was in bloom!

Stunning red scenery

By Miriam C |

Our first stop before going to Zion and Bryce Canyon was St. George. Our first experience with the stunning red scenery was Snow Canyon State Park. WOW! The red rock and petrified sand dunes were spectacular and just whetted our appetite for Zion and Bryce. The colors are amazing! Lots to explore and hike around. Bring the kids and see if you can catch up with them. They will love it. The kids around us were all little billy goats. A definite stop if you are in St. George!

Breathtaking

By Liv2Wander |

We we're in Vegas for a week and decided to take a drive and escape for the day. This is where we ended up. It's so amazingly beautiful here. Well worth spending the day. You won't be sorry.

Magestic sand dunes turned to mountains, just wild

By YoPopDog |

Just a quick drive through but gorgeous, what a great place to hike, walk, camp and cycle, just a wonder of the world

Small park - many places to explore!

By Olga |

Comparing to other parks around, Snow Canyon is small. Local people probably just come theire on weekends and take one trail in time. But we had short trip from Dallas and dedicated 2 days to walk on trails for photography. We had very good map from their website and I wrote milage one-way or round trip. That helped me to plan days and times to see what we wanted to photographe and not to over-do. Remember, that this place crowded on weekends and sometimes parking lots are full. Entry fee $ 6.00 per car each visit. We do recommend to miss White Rock natural Amphitheater - amazing suraundings in short walk from your car! This place is on the very Northern side of Snow canyon!

Great place to spend a day.

By JohnBrz |

This is a beautiful park located just outside of St. George, Utah, about a two hour ride from Las Vegas. There is something for everyone - including hiking, biking, caving, rock climbing, and just enjoying the scenery.

Lots to see incl. prttoglyphs

By RichFisler |

Beautiful canyon. Lots of nice hiking and biking trails. Good parking in April. Away from the main park, to the east off of Bluff Dr is a 2-3 mile trail to some very cool petroglyphs in slot canyons . Check it out on google and bring gps coordinates- off the Gaia trail I believe. The petroglyphs are not well marked but well worth the hike and search

Plenty of great hikes - could use more info at entrance

By TexasMargs |

We went early in the morning to avoid the heat, and since there was no one at the entrance, there was no one to give us a trail map. We did our own online research and figured stuff out, but I like to have a paper trail map. We picked one up at visitor center later in the day and returned for another visit because we were looking for easy hikes for some older people in our group. Be wary - all trails have lots of sand on them except the Whiplash, which despite its name, is the most gentle and easy trail in the park. We also hiked Cinder Cone, which was short but had a straight up gravelly climb that challenged even the teenagers with us. We all enjoyed Scout Cave - the cave is cool, and the inclines there have steps or rocks that support you, but be warned that there is NO shade until the end. Jenny's Canyon was easy and in the shade of the rocks but due to sand, my elderly parents couldn't navigate it as easily as we'd hoped. Still, there's something for everyone, and the paths are clearly marked.

Favourite campground in utah

By Travellers <3 |

This is such a hidden gem. It’s absolutely beautiful here without one bad thing to say about it. Hiking and biking paths right from the campground. Free showers and flush toilets. No campfires from June to September though.

Little Zion

By Sharleen N |

A gallery owner recommended this park to us and said the locals call it “Little Zion”. $10 per car. Drive to the end and turn around, come back the other way. Beautiful scenery. Stop, park and take a hike. Several trail choices. We walked to Jenny’s Canyon. A small slot canyon. The trail is marked easy, but the sand is difficult to navigate. We started down another trail that went through large fields of lava rock. Your shoes will get dusty!

Less Populated Special Spot

By Rick J. Delanty |

With Zion National Park right next door to St. George, folks staying there flock to the Park site. HOWEVER, a jewel of nature that is Zion-like but less traveled is next-door to St George, Snow Canyon Park. As a landscape painter and fine artist, I am always looking for those special places where I can set up and not be over-run by zealous hikers. In Snow Canyon, I can be by myself in some of the most beautiful landforms, and have easy access from a nearby VRBO. Great trails, easy parking, restrooms, hike 1 mile or twenty--UNbelievable place to take your family, OR take off on a long hike. Seeking peace in nature? Snow Canyon is your next stop.

Snow Canyon State Park

By randtrip |

This amazing park in Ivins, northwestern suburb of St George, Utah, is just a short distance away. Fantastic vistas, biking and hiking trails. Be sure to take your camera.

To visit !

By Bernard H |

Here is a small state park (10dol entry) little known to tourists and yet magnificent
You can cover the 3 main small trails in half a day (with no difference in altitude but in stifling heat) to see petrified dunes, a magnificent lava flow (you can descend in 2 "tubes": bring a headlamp) a "red canyon" " wild or walk barefoot on beautiful soft red sand!
A very beautiful cycle path crosses it
Small visitor center for information
Possibility of camping (super equipped
)
Favor hiking early in the morning
A nice half day near St-Georges/Washington

Beautiful

By verybigv |

An excellent place to take in some incredible scenery close to St. George. One of the nicest state parks I've ever seen.

Snow Canyon is beautiful - avoid Red Mountain "Resort" though!

By BabsTravel |

Amazing place to hike and explore. Make sure to stop at FeelLove café in Ivins. A helpful warning - avoid the Red Mountain "resort" property for accommodations, they double charged our credit card, allowed staff members to steal items from rooms, and haven't answered our emails. Had to make a claim via our booking site and credit card provider. The area is gorgeous though. Amazing red canyon trails and beautiful sunsets.

The eyes have it!

By Tom I |

The rock formations are jaw dropping.
Take your time and walk out onto the formations - and watch for tortoise!

Petrified sand dunes!

By Cello12345 |

Yes, petrified sand dunes, and "regular' ones too! Kids love to play in the sand. Adults are fascinated by the petrified sand dunes. There are other great hikes in this park which we didn't have time to try. Bathroom facilities are excellent, with running water.

Visited with Jax the dog

By bgdiver1963 |

While passing thru St George area, saw state park and decided to drive thru. Excellent views-only a few trails are dog friendly. Very nice and only a few miles out of town

Great place for mild short/long hike

By Niti9 |

Beautiful drive and such beautiful park to just be outdoor, climb mountains and enjoy the park! It rained so we couldn’t do very long hike...but kids had so much fun at different spots climbing different mountains!

Not to be missed

By Jane C |

We aren't hikers and totally enjoyed exploring the landscape. We added our visit at the last minute and are so grateful they did.

a variety of hikes

By nancy h |

we hiked in snow canyon on two separate days. there is an easy paved trail to walk or bike. there are also off pavement trails that go from easy to you really need to be a great hiker to do.between volcanic rocks, pioneer names on the rocks, desert scape, there is so much to see. just please, do no harm by damaging the soil or the landscape.

Lots of hiking options

By advcards |

Admission to the park is $10 for residence 15 for nonresidence. Lots of different trails the ones we took were all well marked easy to follow. Beautiful views well worth it

Fun and Moderate Hike

By ShandiJan |

Snow Canyon is such a fun area. A friend and I took a long walk on the butterfly trail and it was so much fun. We didn't realize that there were lava tunes just off the trail, so we climbed down and it was really neat! I was a little nervous about being able to climb back out of the tube, but it wasn't as treacherous as it looked. I would love to bring my family here.

Awesome sampling of Utah's geology.

By Joel C |

It was a hot June a.m. So we almost had the park to ourselves. A mini Zion. Numerous easy to moderate hikes. Love it. We'll return!

Don't bypass as you rush off to see the National Parks

By ARTalker |

We were in So Utah to hike (just a little) and golf (quite a bit). This state park is entirely worth a stop. There are several entertaining hikes (including ones near and around lava flows & lava tubes, and slot canyon hikes). This was the second of two stops we made en route to Zion (where we planned to spend only one day because we will be returning next year and spending several weeks to visit the National Parks in So. Utah).

I might get flack for this but I'll say it anyway: This was as much worth visiting as was Zion. They are different and Zion is, as you would expect, bigger, grander, busier, more-touristy, and yes - it is certainly worthy of its fame as one of our magnificent national parks. But Snow Canyon is a great stop en route. The hikes are accessible and varied; the rocks are wonderful to see as is the lava which adds great variety to the landscape.
Don't bite my head off, but my husband and I, after seeing the Red Rock Conservation area (a great day) near Vegas and this state park in Utah (1 day), and after spending the one full day in Zion, commented that we enjoyed all three stops equally. YES I know - Zion is indeed more majestic and it's bigger by far and there are more hikes and some of them are really huge and for very experienced hikers, and you need a minimum of three days to see most of it and you ooh and aah as the park-run shuttle bus drives up the canyon. But honestly, we could easily have enjoyed 2 days hiking around Snow Canyon.

Awesome park

By Gordon S |

Gem of a park. Great in spring and fall.
Many places to visit including lava tubes (caves), canyons with redrock, colorful slickrock and high vistas. Find what you want here and enjoy.

Loved our stay here

By kathysoutdooradventures |

We had planned a month long trip to Utah. I was told Snow Canyon State Park was a must see. I have to agree. One of our favorites places of the trip. We Traveled here in June. It was EXTREMELY HOT. With that being said, we still thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.

We got up early for hiking and would do sunsets walks. We only stayed for 2 nights so we did not have time to do all the hikes. There were some really cool under the ground caves to explore in the park. Jenny slot canyon/hike is a very short walk but fun to see. The office has great information on all the hikes and things to see. I would say stop in and ask.

The sites were nice and the showers were clean also. When we stayed there they were included in our camp fees. We have a 32 ft Rv and had enough space for our rig and tow.

Fascinating lava tubes

By TeeTee2013 |

The trails are well marked
Butterfly is a shorter hike with beautiful scenery
Fascinating to see the lava tubes vents and read about them
We hiked on a hot day (102) and glad we had hats and water with us !

Amazing

By Tom B |

This park exemplifies mother nature showing off some of her finest work! A great place for the whole family to explore the wonders of nature here in the southwest desert. A well maintained park with a gift shop, comfort stations, day use areas and certain areas that allow mtn. bikes and dogs on leash. Most of the park is restricted for dogs. A modest fee is required to enter the park. Be prepared for weather changes and bring plenty of water and good sturdy pair of shoes.

Very accessible and beautiful park

By lcgovols |

Do not skip this park! It was so awesome! The ranger at the welcome center was very friendly. Definitely worth the price per car load to get into the park. It was 110 degrees the afternoon we were there, so we only did Jenny’s Canyon and the hike to the turtle sculpture. Jenny’s Canyon was awesome! It is deep sand on most of the hike, so wear tennis shoes or hiking shoes. Even if you o ky drove through the park and don’t do any hikes, I think it was worth the entrance fee. Very unique and beautiful park.

Very nice short trip

By Stephana B |

Lovely even on a short time frame. Just outside of St George. Has great hiking trails as well. A nice preview before my time at Zion

Snow Canyon State Park (trails) by St George UT

By Donna T |

Hiked a few days along a variety of trails in Snow Canyon. The first 2 are considered "outside" the pay area for the Snow Canyon State Park, the Johnson Canyon Trail and Scout Cave Trail. The trail into Johnson Canyon was pretty easy and ultimately leads you to the cornerstone of the hike which is a very large arch in the face of the canyon. Great view! The trail to Scout Cave was a bit longer but you get another dynamic of the area as you pass lava fields, cross a stream (very little water when we hiked it), hike back into the canyon where you walk up a series of steps to get you to a level where you can see the cave in the distance. Continue on the trail and ultimately you arrive at a cave that is accessible albeit you had to either hike up the rocks or take a somewhat formed trail to get you there. Definitely worth the hike up into the cave. The view looking out is something else! Jenny's Canyon trail was short and easy. You get to enter a short slot canyon at the end of the trail. The Whiptail Trail was paved and you can connect to the West Canyon Road that is a gravel road. Both are easy walks with plenty of exceptional views on both sides of the path. We've also done the Sand Dunes which are exactly that. The Lava Flow Trail is what you would think, lots of lava rock. Here and there are lava tubes and if we recall when we did this trail a few years back you could actually go into the tube. Bring a flashlight if you find a tube that is open for climbing into. The Petrified Dunes trail takes you over petrified dunes of many colors that look like waves. The Butterfly Trail took us up, over, around boulders. It's a bit more strenuous than the easy ones. The Pioneer Trail takes you back to a canyon where pioneers carved their names into the wall. Short hike. There doesn't seem to be a bad hike to be had in this gem of a park. Be sure to take along water and wear comfy shoes. If you are into photography this area will certainly make your day.

Very Enjoyable Day

By T S |

Lots of very good short hikes. Interesting rock formations. We especially liked the short walk to Jenny Canyon. Bring a picnic and make a day of your visit.

Beautiful

By Shelly W |

Very pretty drive. There is a fee to drive through there. We hiked to the lava tubes. It was hot for fall weather. We also hiked up the petrified sand dunes and had a great visual over all the pretty rock mountains. I want to go back and do a few more hikes in the future.

Stunning

By Tracy N |

My friends and I hiked here two morning while staying at the nearby Red Mountain Resort. The scenery was stunning and very unique. Our Red Mountain Resort guides were very informative about the area, geology and even some movie trivia. Definitely worth a stop if you are nearby.

Beautiful Park Awesome Easy Slot Canyon

By LLV280Z |

I had read about Jenny's Canyon and knew it was an easy slot canyon, just off the road. We explored Snow Canyon National Park by car, saw a lot of amazing sights and then on the way out we did Jenny's Canyon. It was an easy 10" hike from the road; we tried to go up a really steep hill to the right but fortunately some folks came along and directed us correctly to the left. :) Yikes! It was a shallow in and out canyon, some children were having fun inside and we did too. I am in love with slot canyons so I might find them all cool. Not a technically advanced little side tour!

Great Hike - Beautiful Views

By 75Bruin |

Spent most of New Year's Day hiking the park. The Lava Tube Trail, Petrified Dunes Trail and the West Canyon Road walk were all great. Not too crowded. Great vistas and awesome red rock.

Beautiful park that is quintessential Utah

By GoGatorsWayne |

Beautiful park. Be sure to get out of the car and hike the trails. Sands dunes are outstanding. Gorgeous at sunset.

Worth Visiting

By Rose N |

Spent the day here - $6 entrance fee. Beautiful park, lots of easy hikes to see some pretty amazing things. We spent a couple hours just playing and photographing the petrified dunes. Walked along the Lava trail to see the Lava tubes, and even found the 'butterfly' on the Butterfly trail. Great vistas, not too crowded and totally worth a visit if you have some extra time in the St. George area.

Quick get away

Beautiful colors and easy access hiking trails Close to town Makes a good quick get away The camping area was very clean not crowded during the winter yet warm temps and ideal hiking weather. The facilities were clean and staff very friendly and helpful

cinder cones, lava tubes, sand dunes, oh my!!!

By 192kid |

This incredible state park is a gem, the best park have experienced in Utah (better than Moab since there are far less crowds). Getting there I was winding through lovely neighborhoods with palm trees which reminded me of Florida, and the charming roundabouts and lovely views were spectacular to take in. For me, being an east coaster, getting into the park to see this place is reminiscent of many places I have been to in the past few years....The whole drive into the park is sort of like Palm beach county meets Page, Arizona .Firstly, the hot temperatures kept me thirsty as I took in the incredible views of the navajo sandstone rocks. I even enjoyed gawking at the fancy shmancy houses , wondering why I had not moved to St. George yet... since this sweet place had everything I wanted so far.....I began imaging myself buying a house here and what excellent little Mexican restaurant i would visit on the weekends to order the tastiest Chili Relleno...Back to reality... I had everything I wanted here, except for an ocean. I love the coast and I love the tropics but on this day, I was psyched- first of all I was paying a tiny fee to get my vehicle into the park which is truly a hiker's and mountain biker's playground. It can also be a rock climber's afternoon adventure, or a place to take the family for a quick hike or if you were lucky and overnight campsite. Even thought I was completly land locked, I spent two days taking photos of everything that resembled some sort of volcanic activity (no spoilers here)s admiring and tromping thru wild vegetation ( lovely sage plants), turning my shoes and socks pink with red sand, and testing my strength and agility to get up on the highest point of where the Anasazi once stood or to read some mormon leader's name on a wall. Pretty incredible..... Located at the intersection of the Mojave Desert, Great Basin Desert and Colorado Plateau, I ventured far and wide for a few hours. Some moments on a trail, other moments staring at white rocks, sometimes stopping to read my map. when I finally got to visit Lava tubes ( I cannot describe them, you just have to see this) I kinda flipped out in a good way.... So I say no more, just visit this place.

So much beauty!

By vixj |

We considered going to Zion to visit while in St. George, but thought the littles traveling with us wouldn't want the extra drive. Went to Snow Canyon and it was just beautiful! Went on a couple different trails (Jenny's Canyon Trail) to visit a slot canyon and another (Petrified Dunes Trail) where the kiddos (3 & 5) were able to hold their own for the most part.

Awesome hikes with beautiful views!

By David P |

If you want to escape the crowds of Zion national Park, this is the place for you! You can spend a half a day to a day in this park, hiking the various trails, seeing all of the beautiful scenery. Johnson’s Canyon was one of our favorite hikes! It took you to the beautiful Scout cave. Bring your camera to take lots of pictures! Also, make sure you do Jenny Trail. This is a very family friendly, short hike into a slot Canyon. This area is the habitat for the desert tortoise. We had fun trying to spot one.

A red rock gem in St. George

By MsInformedALWAYS |

You can walk, be in a wheelchair, ride a bike or drive through this 4 mile park which has beautiful sand dunes, canyons, gorges and interesting geologic features. Super place to camp I would imagine and I wish'd that I was! Nonetheless, it's a real beauty of a state park and well worth the $10 entry fee.

Great Experience

By PB |

If it weren't for Zion, Bryce, and Monument Valley this would be the main attraction in southern Utah. That's serious competition and only enhances the value of time spent in Snow Canyon. Stunning cliffs and rock formations, lava fields, petrified sand dunes, etc. You can drive and look or get out and hike. Perfect for beginners and folks with more experience. Go back in the evening and watch the stars come out. Easy 10 mile drive from St. George but feels 100s of miles away. I went 3 times in 3 days, never got old.

Great to see

By Yvonne W |

We were told about this when we were in Monument Valley and as all the RV Parks around Springdale fully booked we stayed st Hurricane and did the drive Incredibly beautiful easy to drive and spectacular scenery take water and Head our early

Loved this State Park!

By Sandy817 |

We loved this State Park as it is beautiful and not very crowded. Parking at trails is limited however. We hiked to a slot canyon and had to park some distance away. If you want to you can just drive through and enjoy the natural beauty from your car. There is a small green grassy area with picnic tables near the RV camping area with bathroom facilities that made for a very pleasant picnic stop for us. Entry fee is $15 for cars from out of state.

Incredible backdrop

By Daphne N |

Beautiful camping in a stunning setting just 19 mins from St. George's city center and 13 mins from the Tuachan outdoor performing arts center. Highly recommend eating in SG, watching a play under the stars, then camping under the red cliffs--that's what we did!! Nice flushing bathrooms with lights and water. Close camping neighbors so don't expect remote. Peaceful, well kept, accessible, and down the road from Circus Wall-a famous rock climbing spot. Only $20 and way more peaceful than a hotel!

A must see!

By Karen C |

We stayed in St. George for one night after visiting Bryce and Zion, and I'm so glad we did! We hiked to the lava tubes, drove around, and explored. The park is really unique with the lava tubes, petrified dunes, sand dunes, white and orange terrain. My son loved exploring and enjoyed it more than the national parks. It wasn't crowded at all, only a few other hikers and cars around. We came in July and it was HOT! Definitely a must see!

Peaceful Snow Canyon

By Joy |

Fabulous place to go to enjoy breathtaking mountain vistas and amazingly quiet beauty!! My fam and I were impressed by the lava tubes trails and barely even saw other people during our hikes. The 3 grands loved climbing on the cool red Navajo sandstone formations as well as the black basalt rocks too!!

Beautiful Desert Adventure

We really enjoyed our day here. My little boys enjoyed going into the cave/lava tube. They felt like real explorers. However, I advise a strong adult go with any children as there are steep parts. We hiked to the top of the red petrified sand dunes and had a discussion of how they got petrified, had a picnic and hiked a slot canyon. Each hike was short and we reached them by car and then parked at the trail head. It was during Christmas break and very busy so parking was tight. They do have vault toilets and a water spigot to wash hands. Bring lots of water, sun protection and good footwear. There is no food in the park so bring a picnic if you are staying long. My brother, who is a local, told us there was a lot more to the park that we didn't see that day. So we will make a return trip next visit.

Hidden treasure just north of St George

By Tom |

I was in the area for some hiking at a couple national parks and decided to spend half a day hiking here based on a word of mouth recommendation. Entry fee is $10 and can be done via a paper envelope or an easy online app. I drive to the north and worked my way south with stops for several hikers. Nothing too challenging, but some nice variety and great views. Good place for kids to learn to enjoy hiking. The campground has a really nice shaded site with picnic tables for a relaxing lunch.

Who knew?

By Chris D |

Truly a hidden gem in plain sight! The beauty of this park is simply amazing. We were on a business trip to St. George and had a couple hours between appointments, so we chose to see this park due to its proximity. We slowly drove through to take in all the scenery, then drove back from the other direction for that perspective. We were unable to hike, so that's something to look forward to on the next trip, I'm looking forward to seeing the lava tube. PS: If you're planning to hike, make sure you have proper shoes!

A great place for outdoor fun

By Brian E |

We did two different hikes in the park, Johnson's arch and the petroglyphs on the east side of the park.

Johnson's arch is only open in the winter, not really sure why. The trail is really good (wide and well marked), though sandy in a few locations. The trailhead is just before the fee station at the entrance to the park (there's a parking lot on the left if entering from the south). It's a relatively flat trail so it isn't difficult, though even in the winter we decided to put sun screen on because most of it is very exposed. I clocked the trail to be about 2 miles round-trip and took us about 1 hour. This is a really good family trail and our 6 year-old had no problems at all doing it.

The petroglyph trail is longer than Johnson's arch, about 5 miles. The start of this trail is on the east side of the park. I would say the trail is pretty good, though when you get into the rocks it can be difficult to stick to the trail because it isn't obvious, but you'll be fine if you watch for the cairns. Overall the trail was in good condition, though it was sandy for long stretches. We followed the official trail and clocked our trail at 4.5 miles, taking us about 3 hours to hike and play around/eat lunch at the petroglyphs. I'm told that there are several petroglyph spots, but we just went to the first one. Our 6 year-old did this trail as well and he did really well, but was tired by the end. You can take short cuts on the trail to make it shorter, but if caught you'll be fined, I would stick to the actual trail. This one can be done year-round, but is also very exposed so if doing it when the weather is warm be prepared with LOTS of water.

Spectacular

The topography was so unique and special. I enjoyed both driving through the park and walking around different locations within the park to take a closer look.

Snow Canyon Tourtoise sighting

By RodneyFMaddox |

What a beautiful Park! Cliffs were amazing, trails and hiking was plentiful and there were clean restrooms! Cost $10 per car to get in. A MUST SEE if you are in St George. Only saw one tortoise.

A must!!!

By ellen |

I have no idea why this is ranked number 60 in things to do. This place is absolutely beautiful. More hiking then you can do in a day. Walking over petrified sand dunes and lava flows. It’s is breathtaking!

Winter wonderland

By jac2580 |

Great place for a snow day retreat to nature. Did the lazy version. No actual skiing was involved, but watchin others have a blast was fun too.

nice hike, but thieves are hanging out

By Kent H |

The hike and scenery were great. Lots of people and yuppies on the trail. Plenty of inconsiderate Californians. Watch out for thieves. Someone gained access to one of our vehicles and ripped off several credit cards leaving the purse. The card owner was out about $2000 before realizing what happened. So, BE CAREFUL.

OMG

By Peggy C |

This place is a little off the beaten track, but so worth it. The sites are large, and easy to get into. Facilities clean, except for the flying bugs ( can't be helped)
The canyon views are stunning. At night the mountains look like a group of old men gathered together to tell stories. Highly recommend.

Road trip, and more

By Joy B |

We went to Snow Canyon State Park from Las Vegas. The park is really pretty, but much smaller than I thought. Only about 6-7 miles, so the drive through was rather quick. We were traveling with dogs, and there are limited areas where you can take them, so mostly we got out a few places, walked a very short way. The views are rather limited to what you can see from the road, so unless you are prepared to hike or bike onto the trails, you will have some disappointment. There were lots of families with kids biking.

So far and yet so near

By AlpinerHut |

With Zion National Park just 46 miles east of St. George, Utah, why would you bother with Snow Canyon State Park, seven miles west?

Think of it as Zion Lite.

Deep canyon? High cliffs? Arch? Slot canyon? Hiking trails? Overlooks? Rock formations? On and on and on. It's all in Snow Canyon -- without getting to the park at 6 a.m. so there's a place to park. (I'm not suggesting that you skip Zion, by the way, just that this is a similar but more accessible experience.) If you base yourself in St. George (see my B&B review, "A house with character -- and characteristics"), you can do Snow Canyon, then take your training wheels off and go to Zion an hour away.

TIPS:

-- Two entrances: south and north. I'd suggest entering at the south if you want to get to hiking right away. The Johnson Canyon trail (200-foot arch) actually starts just outside the park entrance, and the Jenny's Canyon trail (slot canyon) is a short distance north. If you enter south and leave north, it's very convenient to access the Scenic Overlook via southbound Utah 18 back into St. George. Fantastic views from there over the ground you've just explored.

-- Absolutely carry water, snacks, sunscreen, a hat, etc., for even the shortest hikes. We found a "quick" half-mile roundtrip hike could turn into something much longer by the time you followed branching trails, stayed longer than expected, etc. (We were still making this mistake well into our visit to Utah's Mighty 5 national parks. "Did you bring water?" "No, it's only a half-mile hike." "I wish I had water.")

--Both in our late 60s, my wife and I recommend these two hikes: Johnson Canyon and Jenny's Canyon. Both are considered easy, but for seniors always upgrade one: moderate! Johnson Canyon leads to a 200-foot-wide arch. Jenny's Canyon leads to a tall, narrow slot canyon. Oh, all those holes you see in the dirt along the trail? Tarantulas!

Lovely Utah park outside of St George

By jronkowski |

This is a lovely Utah state park with white and red sandstone formations and old lava . There are numerous hiking trails from 1/2 to 8 miles long. There is a campground, a tiny visitor center, and flush and pit toilet rest rooms . This popular park is near St. George so it’s not wilderness but it’s a fun introduction to the beautiful visible geology of Southern Utah.

A must-do-park when in Utah

By simivalley1699 |

Our friends took us on a driving tour through the park. in August it's just plain too hot to go hiking there (unless you start at sunrise). We made plans to come back when it's cooler and to explore some of the hikes. Loved the campground info we received when we stopped in the visitor information center. Hope to see some of the many animals in the park. It's huge, 7,400 acres - there's something to explore for everybody!

Do this BEFORE you go to Zion

By Cameron M |

We stayed in Hurricane and went into west Zion off Kolob Terrace (Northgate Peaks) on our first big hiking day. Our "off" day we went into Snow Canyon and loved parts of it.
Here's my suggestion: Park at the Butterfly trailhead and go to the right toward the lava tubes. You'll get some nice views of the opposing parfait cliffs. The lava tubes are pretty cool if BRING A FLASHLIGHT! Your phone light is not enough. A headlamp is best. I had a AAA LED pen light I could hold in my mouth that was adequate. DON'T pee in the cave!! It stinks. If you go all the way to the back then the toilet smell goes away.
Now backtrack to the parking lot and go toward the Petrified Dunes. There is a marked trail but you can pretty much just scramble all over the place. Make sure you continue south on the marked trail to the overlook past the intersection with Red Sands trail. You can spend an hour at various sides of this knoll that offers great vistas from all directions. Head back to the Butterfly parking.
Per AllTrails, we made a loop, going down from the Overlook to West Canyon Rd and then across the wash and up Lava Flow trail to the lave tubes. There are great views of the cliff faces, but the sand traversing the wash on Lava Flow is not worth it.

Snow canyon

By bjrs812 |

Beautiful park with multiple trails. Weather in November perfect for endless wandering. Surreal landscapes.

A really great get away!

By Verlin C |

This area is full of really nice hikes, slot canyon's, lava tunes, pioneer sites, and great vista's. Small fee to enter .... sugest early arrival to miss the heat, bri g lots of water and head lamps for the lava tubes.

Awesome views of Red Rock and lava flows

By 1kramer2 |

The park is quite large with numerous hiking trails and red rock mountains in all directions. Trails vary in degree of difficulty but something for everyone. We did a short hike in Jenny's canyon and a longer one along the petrified sand dunes. Bring your camera and some water.

Camping and hiking!

By Genevieve R |

We spent 5 days in this lovely state park. Could have stayed longer! Our site #22, I think was the best of all 29 sites. Nice toilet and shower (free) facilities, enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff and the most incredible canyon. Every morning I would feel the awe of being in this place of antiquity and beauty.
Great day hikes of all types and for all abilities. Very close to St. George.

Great views

By Sean L |

This place was cool. We only spent about 3 hours there because of the heat and wind. The petrified dunes were neat. Lots of places to explore. We will go again

A Real Gem!!

By Roger R |

This Utah State Park is a real treasure! It has beautiful “red rock” scenery, nice hiking trails (two with dogs allowed), and it is a nice place for a bicycle ride. This park is not as well known as the big names in the area, but it is well worth your time!

Gem of St. George Utah

By John T |

What is nice about Snow Canyon is that it is family friendly for the casual traveler as well as the hard core outdoors people. You can simply drive and park and look or you can go bouldering, hiking or rock climbing. There are so many trails to choose from that this will be a place to come back to time and time again. Camping spots fill up early so do not wait and hope there might be a spot, make a reservation. Check out Three Ponds Trail, Lava Tubes Trail, Johnson Canyon Trail. There is a drive to overlook road off of Hwy 18 that is a must at sunset. The full list of trails that are in or near Snow Canyon is too long to type out here. Just go to the park office and ask what there is to do or better yet, strike up a conversation with the friendly locals to find out where there favorite spot is.

Great diversity, easily accessible

By kle145 |

We only had a couple hours. It was plenty of time to drive end to end and take two short hikes to explore lava tubes and petrified dunes. Gorgeous at sunrise. Self-pay stations for early entry. Hikes are easy. Would be great for kids. Could easily spend more time.

Lightly visited awesome park near St. George

By OldFinn0914 |

We try to get to Snow Canyon every time we're in St. George. It is less visited than other sites, and has some wonderful trails and scenery. Great hiking and just gawking with easy access to St. George.

Very pretty state park

By Lingang |

A very quite, very pretty place for hikers, tt is also very good for just walk, riding bicycle or lazy drive, very good for picnic too.

Red rock heaven

By Becky M |

If you are into hiking red rocks do this. Now! It is beautiful. There wasn’t much for our 3 year old granddaughter to do but she was mesmerized by the red sand, which is plentiful. The park itself is not very big but you could hike for days in there.

Gorgeous

By Sally B |

We were trying to avoid the national parks. Wow is this a beautiful state park. Really had such a great time here. The red cliffs are so gorgeous and really felt like I got away and we came when it opened, so it was cooler. We just followed the map and really it was so beautiful.

Great location

By Dy H |

We stayed at Snow Canyon on a whim. It was hot and we needed hook ups. We had electric and water. They do offer a dump station. The campground is very clean and well maintained. The Rangers were very nice and helpful. We hiked the Hidden Pinyon Trail. It was a great hike for the evening. There are many trails to hike. We didn't have the time. We stayed at the end of July and had the campground to ourselves. The A/C ran non-stop, but I would go back to explore again.

Who knew?

By tiogapass |

We spent only a half day in Snow Canyon State Park but we intend to come back for more. Snow Canyon is easily overshadowed by nearby Zion National Park, so we hadn't allowed time for a full exploration. We will likely come back and spend at least one night there.
My wife and did the lava tube hike. The geology was interesting, the hike well marked and the sign at the trail head gave a good explanation of the geologic history of the area. I would like to see it in the Spring.

a hidden gem

By Edmund1138 |

spent 1/2 day here and could have more time there. Lots to see and do if you like to hike. Has some great picture opportunities also

Fun place to explore

By J H |

We spent 2 days in Zion and 1/2 day here. It was a fun place to explore. It's much closer the St George and is only $6 and less crowded than Zion. It's also much smaller. We hiked Canyon overlook and Hidden Pinyon Trail. I'm sure you could spend a whole day here too. There were lots of lava tubes/caves to explore but we didn't do any, they didn't look easy to do without the proper equipment or experience.

Best State Park

By jkahunas |

The Family - including 19, 14 and 11 year olds - spent an afternoon in Snow Canyon and experienced great hiking without the crowds of the national parks. This state park is extremely scenic and has a variety of hiking trails. We enjoyed the lava trail including stops to explore the underground lava tubes. Beautiful facilities and friendly staff. Well worth the $15 entrance fee. We will go back next time we visit St. George.

Don’t Stop Too Soon.

By Dunn45 |

Lava Tube Trail. Make sure that you walk beyond the lava tubes to the overlook. Great at sunset! Great views.

Unique State Park--Petrified Sand Dunes, Lava Tubes, great hikes :D

By 542bri |

A friend recommended this park to me--so glad she did!! Our trip was in August and we stayed in St. George. If you go to this park in the late summer arrive EARLY!! We got to the park around 6 am and stayed about 4 hours. We did several trails. We did the lava tubes, part of Butterly, we did the Petrified Sand Dunes, Jenny's Canyon, and Pioneer Names. Very glad we started when we did as the trail with lava rocks likely gets quite hot! And I would guess the petrified dunes do as well. We had a great time at this park and I would gladly return! We explored one of the lava tubes a little but did not have adequate flash lights with us to explore it much.

Snow Canyon not as grand as the reviews make it to be

By Joe P |

We drove through it, hoping to catch a sunset at dusk, it did not work out. i suppose after visiting Zion and Bryce our expectations were large

Great Introduction To Our Utah Hiking Vacation

By Linda P |

A great way to ease into our vacation by starting to get our feet wet hiking in a smaller park. We made a day of it, hiking most trails in the park. Minutes from St. George, like the convenience of a quick drive.

The temperature when we were hiking was in the middle to high 90's with brilliant sunshine, not ideal conditions but we ventured forward. Just be sure to apply tons of sunscreen, wear a hat and bring plenty of water. Some of there trails we did were the Hidden Pinyon Trail, Butterfly Trial, Lave Flow, Petrified Dunes and Whiterocks Amphitheater. Scenery galore on all hikes, not too strenuous but for the heat factor. There are some rock climbs, you can choose to climb all the way up or not, of course we pushed ourselves and climbed to the top of some rock formations. Beautiful views on top. The lava tubes were also interesting, my husband did go into one (not something I was interested in doing), there were a few to explore but be sure you have a flashlight and go with another person.

A really nice day of hiking, be sure to visit Snow Canyon if you like solitude and less crowds.

Beautiful!

By Taroprincess |

Beautiful state park. A mini Zion Natl Park. Enjoyed the short drive to see it all. Too hot yo hike unfortunately in July but was work the short sightseeing trip.

Lava tubes great fun!

By Bonniesal |

We had so much family fun hiking around this park and climbing over lava rocks and into the lava tubes. Bring head lights and kids! Family participants aged 7 to 65!

No crowds here!

By Steve A |

Spectacular valley of sandstone, limestone, slickrock and lava. Utah has some of the best state parks, never mind the national ones! This one was not crowded, was well maintained and had interesting history contained in the guide issued at the entry gate.
It is not difficult to get to and is a must add to the list of beautiful views in Southern Utah.

This is an absolute must when in the St George area

By cube287 |

This is a real gem. We did a couple of short hikes - Jenny's canyon and Pioneer Names - very easy and interesting. Some in our group went to the lava tubes and loved it - there are miles and miles of hikes in spectacular scenery - very unique to this area - can recommend highly enough - you won't be disappointed.

A national park masquerading as a state park

By Robert J |

This park is fantastic: it's a wonder it isn't a national park. Amazing geological formations of Navajo sandstone; lava flows, tubes and caves; sand dunes; good camping; recreational bicycling and hiking. Less accessible parts of the park have amazing hidden canyons and petroglyphs. Well worth a visit and overnight if possible.

Petrified Sand Dunes a must see!

By kathyc20152015 |

Located just north of downtown St. George, UT. We were in the state to take in the Mighty 5 national parks, but this little state park is also worth seeing. The petrified sand dunes were really amazing. We didn't have much time so we did not check out the hiking trails, but I would recommend at least walking on the petrified sand dunes.

Hidden Gem And Wonderful Hiking

By Jan L |

Snow Canyon has some of the best hikes in the St George area. You can spend hours enjoying these gorgeous red rocks and canyons! You so not want to miss this state park - especially the petrified dunes. If you search, you can find the pool that Paul Newman fell backwards into as they were avoiding the chasing posey in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. It’s a great place for families and there are trails for your canines on a leash.

Worth a detour

By ChristineSteve |

Great trails. Beautiful and unexpected terrain. We found a hidden oasis. Jenny's canyon is a short, slotted box canyon. Fun.

Trails abound

By Craig |

Beautiful park for hiking, biking, climbing, and picnicking. Many paved paths to explore. Camping available with water and electricity.

Have to come back here!

By 441paulad |

This was our first hike on our Road Scholar (Elderhostel) trip -- and can you believe it rained in the desert? Enough to need our ponchos.....took the river trail, I believe, and really enjoyed seeing the canyon. Can't speak for other trails in the park -- but even in the rain it was beautiful enough for me to want to go back and paint the scenery. Not crowded at all in late March.

Great short hikes

By Robert N |

If you don't like fighting the crowds at Zion, then Snow Canyon will be the place for you. Located about 8 miles from St. George, the parks had many well-marked trails varying in length and difficulty. Bring water and food as there is not a concession stand in the park. I would recommend wearing hiking boots as many of the trails are through rocky areas. Ample parking is available at each trailhead and restrooms are located at many of the trailheads. The park has a paved bike path.

My favorite hike is to Whiterock Amphitheater located at the north end of the park. Two trails lead to the amphitheater. The shortest trail is from a trailhead on SR-18 outside of the park.

a great place to visit

By RedClifff |

we love to visit the park and also see the plays going on next door. the scenery is superb and a great place to hike

Hiking Butterfly Trail

By Susan P |

A hidden gem in St George, Utah. The most beautiful hike that was moderate in level if climb. Wear hiking shoes/ boots. Rocks are not slippery. Great adventure.

See the Moqui Marbles

By Rick C |

The park has geat beauty and many panaramic features. However, if you are looking for a little something different go to the petrified sand dune area. The tallest of the dunes has a huge population of "moqui marbles" on top. The area geological oddity about the size of a marble or golf ball. It's worth the climb up because you get a special view of the park. The butterfly formation is a short hike to the north.

Very Pretty

By Joseph C |

This was our first time hiking in Snow Canyon. We parked at the visitors center/camp site. The visitors center is very small with very few items to buy. There are bathrooms and a water fountain at the visitors center. We started at the Hidden Piñon trail, went on to the Petrified Dunes trail, went up the Dunes Overlook, and then back to went down the same path to our car. It took us 2 hours to hike that part of the trail. The most strenuous part was the Dunes Overlook. If you are afraid of heights then you might not like hiking up the Dunes Overlook.
We drove down to Jenny’s Canyon. It really only takes like 15 minutes to walk to this slot canyon. It would have been more impressive if there weren’t a huge middle school tour group in there. Also many people posing for their Instagram photos. Get to Jenny’s canyon early so you beat the crowd.
Overall, we really enjoyed it. We would compare it to Valley of Fire by Vegas. We enjoyed both but really you need to get there early to beat the crowds.

Great stop on your Utah adventure

By Amyation |

We stopped here on our drive back to Vegas from Zion and Bryce. While obviously less impressive this park has a lot to do and see and was really beautiful. We explored a lava tube cave and climbed up a cool Hillside for stunning views. There’s a small slot Canyon to explore also. Sand dunes looked fun for kids. We did a few of the trails here and spent a few hours in the park.

So Nice - Visited Twice

By ScottD58 |

So nice we visited twice. 1st visit we experienced Jenny’s Canyon, short hike to the narrow cliffs offering stunning photos. Then we headed towards the Tortoise trail, scaled the nearby mounds and watched the peaceful sunset.

Came back for the lava tubes adventure, a memorable moderate hike for capturing captivating cave photos.

Wonderful

By ILRebel |

A side trip while in St. George and one of the best days of our trip. Beautiful, colorful and relaxing trip with side walks on dunes and rock climbing. Just great.

One of the most Beautiful

We love this place. Great hikes for all ages, even amazing cliffs for the most experienced climbers. The scenery will make an expert photographer out of any novice. This is a must visit while driving through or staying in St George.

Great State Park where I felt very safe as a solo visitor

By PJW83 |

While in St. George as part of a National Park vacation, I decided to venture out on my own one sunny and warm Sunday afternoon. Beautiful and interesting scenery with a few "different things" like the names of pioneers on a rocky wall -- written by the pioneers themselves. I felt very safe on my own.

Snow Canyon State Park is a gorgeous treat!

By Fearless822725 |

We flew in to Las Vegas, so Snow Canyon was our introduction to a roots trip to Mormon settlement areas in Southern Utah. And what a welcome! We know canyons. We were raised in the west. But we had never seen anything like the modulation from orange and lava landscape to garnet red backed with vanilla ice cream colored hills. We drove through in late afternoon, so the light was highlighting each of these perspectives in the most astonishing way. We didn't stop to hike, but the 7 mile highway through Snow Canyon State Park was marked with many trails ranging from 10" strolls to longer and more rigorous trails. A brochure at the Park entrance provided all the info needed to make a choice. There's a modest entrance fee to help maintain the park perfectly, and a lovely little museum (and restrooms) to explain the astonishing history of this place. As a bonus, when you drive up from the south, you pass through a Joshua Tree forest. Who knew? Ivins is a lovely (newly built!) town nearby with food and other services you might need.

Snow Canyon, an Alternative to Zion National Park

By Eric P |

Lots of great desert and roc scenery and some nice easy to moderate to difficult trails, and less costly and less crowded than Zion National Park.

Take a hike!

By 2BBoomers |

Conviently located just outside of St. George, Utah. Great place to hike. The trails were well marked. The staff could not have been nicer ♡

A Surprise Find!

By FamilyH5000 |

This State Park is not to be missed, perhaps even nicer than Zion National Park. It is less crowded and the sandstone rock formations are very unique.

Stunning State Park

By Rachel L |

If you're in St. George, take the short drive Snow Canyon State Park. There's lots of hiking and the scenery is spectacular.

Spectacular geology, great hiking

By AZtravelers |

We visited for the day but about eight years ago we were camp hosts here. The hiking among the unique geological features is spectacular. Hikes can be tailored to accommodate every skill level. Camping ranges from full hookups to tent camping in the rocks. Group sites available. Visitor center is small but has displays of local interest. Reservations recommended.

Barren and beautiful

By Koen L |

Had a lovely hike with numerous impressive views on Hidden Pinyon trail. No shade so wear appropriate clothing and sun screem

First sight in Utah - amazing!

By JanN216 |

Beautiful canyon with amazing views. Enjoyable level walk through the canyon that allowed plants and animals up close and personal.

A piece of heaven

By Sojourner |

Snow Canyon State Park is worth an extended visit, or a drive through, even if you aren’t camping. It has gorgeous Red Rock hills and cliffs, petrified sand dunes, along with regular sand dunes, and trails with awesome sightseeing destinations! The state park’s reservable campsites are not worth the money, all squished together. However, the rest of the campsites, first come-first serve, are great. The city of St George, Utah is within 6-7 miles of the campground...easy access to any need you might have. Paved bike trails and hiking trails are great for all.

One of the best State Parks anywhere

By bobthatsme |

This compact park has scenery to rival most of our national ones and is only about a 10 minute drive from St. George. There are a good number of easily accessed trails, most of which are not very long or difficult. The Petrified Dunes trails is particularly recommended not just for the spectacular scenery but the fact that you can go exploring just about anywhere you want once you get on the slickrock. The Hidden Pinyon trail is another gem, and don't overlook the White Rock Amphitheater which is just a short hike from a parking lot outside the north entrance of the park.

Great Trail for families

By Meg B |

Just a 2hr drive from Las Vegas, this is a treat for hikers who simply wanted to break free from the crowd. It is often overlooked because of its proximity to Zion National Park but we enjoyed hiking in the red sands and hidden pinyon trail with less crowd and more of nature.

Beautiful and quiet

By Tamera B |

We love Zion's National Park, but it can get so congested. We were pleasantly surprised by how beautiful Snow Canyon was. It isn't very large, but there are plenty of pretty trails that could keep you busy for two days. It is peaceful and serene. You could also take children and keep them entertained, as there is a small slot canyon that is a short walk and a large sand dune that kids could spent a couple of hours playing in, besides the many trails with things to discover. It is a $10 entrance fee, which is less than Zion's, but it is not as majestic as Zion's.

What a beautiful place to hike!

By valenandnico |

When we got to St. George we asked the locals to recommend a place to hike close to the town and they all pointed to Snow Canyon. What a day! Beautiful landscape, different shades of red and orange, small sand dunes, rocks, rocks and more rocks of all shapes and sizes, great places to hike, and the views were amazing. Most of the hikes are fairly short and family friendly and allows you to observe the diversity in the rock formations of the park. We watch the sunset and it was breath taking. Cant wait to go back!

Amazing Park--Who Knew?

By shifra w |

I had been to Zion, Bryce and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in August, 2014 with my granddaughter. At that time, we spent a night in St. George and first heard about Snow Canyon State Park. The receptionist at the front desk of the Hampton Inn cautioned us, at the time, that it was way over 100 degrees, even late in the afternoon, and that this would not be a good time to visit the park.
I was back in the area in May this year, making a circuit from Las Vegas to Page, Arizona to see Antelope Canyon, then on to Bryce and Zion, and back to Vegas.
I had a late night flight to Toronto and so, after leaving our wonderful cabin in Zion about noon, I had the idea to stop at Snow Canyon on the way.
I had heard there was a nice drive through the park and some lava tubes to see. I figured we could spend about an hour hitting the highlights.
When we arrived at the entrance, we found out that our National Parks pass did not work and that there was a $6 entrance fee. Since we only had a very short time, I wondered if it would be worth the money. But, we were already there, so we paid the admission and got a brochure.
And that is when I discovered that Snow Canyon State Park cannot be seen in an hour. We did not even make the full six mile drive before we had to turn back, promising ourselves to devote a whole day to this park next time we are in the area.
The weather was absolutely perfect for hiking--mid seventies.
There were quite a number of people in the park and it was not a weekend.
The scenery is breathtaking--sandstone cliffs, white, red and black rocks and desert vegetation.
The lava rocks were very interesting and there were signs explaining the geology and the various park seasons.
There is a washroom in this park and picnic tables, adjacent to a slickstone formation the kids might want to clamber on. There is also a campsite.
We unfortunately missed the visitor center. That is usually the first place we stop, but we got to some short hikes first and ran out of time.
There are about thirteen hikes for all ability levels; some are easy and you can take small children on them.
Jenny's Canyon is a fun little hike with a few slopes and steps. It leads to a short, sculpted canyon where you can hear your voice echo.
The key to enjoying this park seems to be hitting it on a day with moderate temperatures.
Take sunscreen, hats and plenty of water and have a wonderful time.
I am so glad I got to preview this park. Next time, I hope to devote it the time it deserves.

We took a leisurely 8 mile stroll through the park with our dog. Saw lots of people running, walking, and riding bikes. We could see plenty of other spots and elevations to explore.

Wonderful red cliffs and nice hikes

By 42kRun |

Snow Canyon State Park had a beautiful amphitheater for shows during the summer. There were many hiking trails leading up to some of the sandstone peaks. Many bikers traversed the park grounds and a marathon runs through it in the Fall

Great state park!

By Amanda |

I loved coming to this state park. We only had about 3 hours and we tried to fit in as many hikes as possible. I wish we could have stayed longer. We were coming from GBNP and traveling back to Vegas. We did not camp here but the facilities looked very nice and the staff were very awesome and informative.

Fun state park with lava tubes

By Santucci1 |

We were staying at Red Mountain Resort and had not even heard of this state park. We were told there were lava tubes to explore in the park. The park was empty so we were out exploring with nobody around. It was a lot of fun and the lava tubes were easy to find and really unique. Not necessarily for the faint of heart but if you are adventurous and don’t mind heights and tight spaces it is worth finding them. You can drive into the park to get closer and then hike into them. Bring water with you - there is very little shade. I would definitely recommend this if you are in the area.

Worth a few hours trip

By sainbasha |

Snow canyon is a state park in St. George, Utah. It is more of a local spot easily accessible from the city. Has a $15 parking fee and the park is open till 10.pm. There are some nice climbs and hikes and some good views. It is a good place to spend a few hours. You can also visit the park again before 10.00 pm for some good star gazing.

This place is a gem

By Ron |

September 14, 2018 and it’s 92F wow. The sights are incredible and make sure you bring water, water and more water with you. Photo ops are incredible and they also have overnight camping accommodations with full hookups available. Read the other reviews as I feel right now that with so many other reviews mine would be repetitive.

A fab place to visit.

By Barry and Nicol... G |

Snow Canyon state park is well worth a look. Its $10 dollars well spent. The scenic road winds its way around with fab views at every turn. Lots of walks and canyons to explore. Wear good shoes and take water.

Energy to burn

By jlmo10 |

We needed somewhere for my 8 yo to burn off some of his abundant energy, and the Petrified Dunes trail was just the right place. Climbing, clambering and exploring to his heart's content.

Wonderful scenic State Park and great place for Photography

By Fei L |

The park is very close to St. George. The red petrified sand dunes and black lava rocks make it perfect for pictures.

Breathtaking views of the mountains in Southern Utah!

By Disco_Man57 |

A friend of my aunt recommended visiting this park on our way to Los Angeles from New Harmony, UT. We are mighty glad that we took her advice. The mountain views are stunning! See the pictures that I have attached to my review, and the pictures posted by other visitors to this park. I have saved one my pictures to my computer desktop. After seeing the pictures, you probably can understand why I did so.

When we went there (on Wednesday, 25 July 2018 -- it was hot as blazes), the entrance booths were unoccupied. However, there was a sign instructing us to include $5.00 in an envelope to help maintain the park. We complied with these instructions, and dropped the envelope into a designated receptacle for them.

Depending on how fast you drive through the park, and how often you stop for pictures, will determine the length of your visit. I guess that it took us about a half hour to drive from one end to the other. At the end of our journey, we saw a gated community at the base of the canyon that looked quite attractive. Hard to believe that the development was built in that location. The residents of the community most certainly enjoy the awesome scenery that surrounds them.

The park is in (or near) St. George. Be sure to visit if you are in the area. You will see truly inspiring images of natural beauty.

The "Gem of Utah" - "Unparalleled Beauty"

By wijram |

Snow Canyon State Park was recently featured in national programing as the “hidden gem” of Utah. Imagine, in a state with Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Arches National Park, Capitol Reef National Park and several other incredibly striking places, a small state park deserves that label.

Yet, it is true.

This 7,400-acre park is famous for the majestic beauty of its soaring deep red sandstone cliffs and its unique geological features, including volcanic cones, lava flows, sand dunes, and twisted layers of rock. The scenery is so spectacular it has been the backdrop for Hollywood movies including The Electric Horseman, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and Jeremiah Johnson.

The park, located within the 62,000 acre Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, offers opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and abilities. Activities include hiking, climbing, nature studies, wildlife viewing, and photography. Ranger talks, and junior ranger programs are also offered. There are more than 38 miles of hiking trails, a three-mile paved walking/biking trail, and over 15 miles of equestrian trails.

Camping in the park is also allowed. Campsites cost $16 for tents, $20 for RVs. Pets are allowed if kept on a leash in the campground and on West Canyon Road and Whiptail Trail only.

Snow Canyon State Park is also easily available off of Interstate Hwy 15 between Las Vegas and Salt Lake City.

Scenic, a great place for geologists

By Healthywalker |

I stopped at the overlook by turning left from the highway. That is the best thing to do. There is plenty of rock from the former lava to see. Once inside the park I walked from the roadway to Jenny's Canyon. The ground is sand and one's steps sink into the sand. It is hard to get pictures of cliffs without the road in the field of view.

Challenging to snag these sites

By Rob S |

First, the good. We had water and electric in our site. The dry camp sites are in mostly very private locations. There is a nice little park for kiddos. Of course lots of good hiking Oct-April, otherwise you are likely to hit. Wonderful wildflowers in late April. Tables in hookup sites are covered, have lighting and outlet at the table.
The not so good: please don’t interrupt the campground welcomer as he goes through the info about the CG…he can’t handle it. The hookup sites are VERY close together. Actually, picnic tables overlap. If you have a slide out you might not be able to put it out all the way. If the person you are next to set up wrong, you may have a very difficult time getting situated. This area was designed before slide outs. There were four other sites within 12 feet of the side of our site.
Other notes: shower is at upper end of CG. It only works when pulling chain, so if you only have one arm you won’t be able to soap up and wash off at the same time.

Short stop and a few miles later

By Terrier27 |

Stopped by Snow Canyon on our way to Zion NP. Beautiful scenery and a few great short trails. We hiked the Hidden Pinyon Trail, took the short hike to see the Pioneer Names, hiked out to Jenny's Canyon, and took short detour to see some of the petrified dunes. All in all, we spent about 3-4 hours exploring. It was a great stop off on our way to Zion. July 10... and temps were only about 93 degrees and cloudy.

Love, love, love this park ❤️

By The-Dog-Taxi |

$6.00 for our vehicle 🚗 to spend a wonderful day hiking at this park with our doggy. There are a few trails that allow dogs 🐕 on them but the majority of the trails don’t. Was a beautiful day to explore and take photos, eat a picnic lunch and hike. We talked for awhile with a young lady new to the park service and she pointed us in the direction of the cinder cones after we left the park. Pretty remarkable area with full washroom facilities and picnic tables also in a few areas. It’s only a short drive through the park but some unique scenery packed into a small area. We would like to go back and hike the trails we couldn’t t@ke the pooch on😎

Must see!

By ScubagirlWisconsin |

We stopped here late afternoon on a Tuesday and had 0 problems finding parking. We hiked butterfly and lava flow, and the landscape was awesome. So many views in a relatively short hike. Some areas were harder to navigate so might not be the best for little kids or anyone needing assistance. But I have some balance problems and didn’t have much trouble.

Just an amazing place to visit!

By DizTraveler |

If your in the area, go here! I took the south entrance into the state park and was amazed at every mile that I drove through...plenty of hikes, short, long, easy to strenous, picnic areas, campgrounds!

you can spend hours in here!

there are paved hiking trails as well!

Great Day Trip

By bmwagner1 |

When you visit Southern Utah there is never a lack of beautiful places to visit. After spending time in Zion and Valley of Fire we were looking for something close to St George for a relaxing day. So glad we found Snow Canyon. Amazing rock formations, slot canyons, lava tubes (caving), short hikes, well maintained facilities, picnic areas...just a wonderful day.
You can spend a few hours or all day at this park. Relax and enjoy the beauty only 15 minutes out of St George.

Very Scenic with some different types of hiking

By jeff77664 |

Spent a little over an hour in September at park. Arrived later in the day and didn't get a chance to spend much time there.
The formations are beautiful and scenic.
Did several of the walks including Jenny's Canyon and the sand dunes trail. Did not see any wildlife.
Worth a trip if around St. George

Day Trip or Extended Stay Will not Disappoint

By Michael L |

This is a beautiful park with many hiking trails through a wide variety geological formations. There is a small campground in the park with flush toilets and showers. The park is near Ivin’s, Utah where there is access to camping supplies and gasoline.

Isolated splendor

By Joan F |

Early on a weekday morning, this park was ours to explore. So many varied vistas, colors and rock formations. Too many photos but I couldn't help myself. Loved petrified dunes and Jenny's garden slot canyon trail. Best state park imaginable!

Quality Hiking On A Very Hot Day

By margatemensch2016 |

On a hot 108 degree day,I enjoyed the marvelous Sandstone scenery of Snow Canyon State Park.I learned about the plants of this desert environment and its awesome rock formations.I especially was enamored with its Petrified Sand Dunes and its White Lava Rock Formations.I hiked on the following trails to my delight;Hidden Pinyon Trail(A mile and a half),Petrified Dunes Trail, and White Rocks Ampitheatre Trail.I also appreciated the help that I received from the park's staff. In this time of Covid 19,Snow Canyon State Park is a lot more conducive to staying healthy than the Zion National Park-._Social Distancing.is important in Southern Utah now.

Close in to town but a great sample of Utah's complex geology

By Allan A |

Snow Canyon is a great place to visit when in St. George. It is close to town, but feels remote as you descend the canyon. You will see the multicolored sandstone cliffs and lava flows that characterize the area. If you drive a bit further up 18 toward Diamond, there are two very cool lava cinder cones, one of which is just off the road and gives a chance to do a hour or so hike to see something really unique. Be careful at the top as it is loose lava gravel!

Very pretty but...

By sttly |

This was the first park we stopped at on our vacation in Utah. The park is very pretty. However, we tried to hike two separate trails. Neither was very well marked and it is very easy to get lost. I would take plenty of water and plan on just wandering around enjoying the view and not necessarily know where you are. We saw plenty of people with guides and perhaps that is the way to go at this park.

Awesome Scenery

By Supper Time Tennessee |

Another spectacular view in souther Utah. You can easily park and enjoy a walk with small children. Great views. We went through the week and had very little traffic. Great place for picnic or pictures.

Hiking in January?

By Michael N |

While my friends across the country are shoveling snow I was absolutely tickled to be wearing shorts and hiking. This canyon has it all. Red rocks, lava tubes, sand dunes, history. Well maintained, cleanest comfort stations I've ever seen.

Liked better than Zion

By Michele L |

We visited the day after we went to Zion. Honestly for the $15 day pass, I would go here 10 times before I went to Zion again. We went on a Wednesday so there were very few people anywhere. The first trail we went to was Jenny’s and the end of the half mile walk was a more exciting view than anything I saw in 8 hours at Zion. A really neat ‘narrows’ alley with lots of little climbing crevices for cool pictures. The next one was Pinyon and that had some really tight little climbs but not too bad for this 58 year old not in the best shape. This trail was a little over an hour with some really cool views as well. You can walk/climb for hours on the petrified sand dunes. So much fun especially when you are out there by yourself. Beautiful and peaceful. We also hiked for over an hour on the white rocks trail but that wasn’t as scenic and we never found the amphitheater. Overall it was just really nice to leave your backpack in the car at each trailhead and feel much more ‘free’ than lugging all your stuff with you all day. Loved this park!!!!

Great place for any family looking to get out in the great outdoors!

By Amaliabelle1 |

We loved going to snow canyon state park. We took a lot of little kids ages 18 month - 9years old. We did the Jenny’s Canyon and overlook hike. Then we had lunch at the Sand dunes (not petrified). They had actual toilets in that bathroom which was also nice. They have some picnic tables there, some even in shade. The kids loved just playing in the sand. We stayed there quite awhile and then explored the petrified sand dunes. We were gone from about 11:30-4pm. Everyone had a great time. It wasn’t super busy and I was beautiful weather. Definitely visit. All of these hikes even toddlers could do. We didn’t go all the way up the petrified dunes trail we just explored and then headed back when we were ready. It was nice to have a hiking toddler backpack for when the kids were a little tired but for the most part we didn’t even need it. :-)

Don't skip Snow Canyon State Park

By Travel36329115848 |

Since it was December, we had the park to ourselves almost. The hikes are short and memorable. We love Snow Canyon State Park at all times of the year. The views are so wonderful.

Fantastic State Park with lots of hiking opportunities

By Martin L |

Absolutely loved this park. Fabulous scenery and relatively quiet. Spent two days here enjoying the many varied hikes on offer of varying lengths and difficulty leading to some spectacular view points. Easily accessed from either St. George or Hurricane. Don’t miss this if in the area to visit Zion.

Beautiful park!!

By MommyDre |

Love this park!! Absolutely gorgeous views!! It's under $10.00 to get in. We started hiking on a trail but it was a little treacherous for the young kids & seniors in our group. We hiked on the lave trail that explains all about lava tubes. Very cool!! We will definitely be back.

Little Known, but Spectacular

By MaryandRon |

We had one day left on our trip to Utah but didn't want to drive far to one of the better known attractions. We chose Snow Canyon only because it was 30 miles from our motel. We were wondering if after seeing Zion and Bryce, it would be worth seeing.

It sure was worth seeing. The variety of geological formations and landscapes was unbelievable. The descriptions of the trails helped us find those that worked for us. Each one was a totally different experience. We enjoyed our day so much we went back at dusk to gaze at the stars. It is a must see for those visiting southwestern Utah.

Wish I had more time to spend

By darmasmom |

We drove through this beautiful park on the way from Zion to Las Vegas. What a stunner! For us, mid day was too hot to hike with no shade so we settled for a gorgeous drive , utilizing many of the pullouts. Would love to return to explore more

Fascinating

By RecreatingRetirees |

In addition to the countryside being stunning the two volunteers in the visitor center were very helpful

Great views!

By giwpriestap |

As a part of a bike tour, we stopped at this location for a picnic lunch. The grounds were clean and well kept. The restrooms were about what you would expect for a rural state park. The bike trail in and out of the park is very well maintained and just a lovely, peaceful ride.

Easy access from the city and the trails can be easy as well

By Judy T |

This place is gorgeous! There are many places to park and take a hike. Many hikes can be as hard and long as you like OR just go in and see what the buzz is all about. It's great for yound kids and old folks like me!

Lava Lava Lava!

By ArtMom100 |

One of the most amazing parks! The lava tubes were incredible. We never expected them to be so big. Even though you read about the volcano's in the area being dormant, they seem so alive. It's hard to imagine that much lava came out of such tiny volcanos.

Gorgeous canyon

By Kahnster |

Beautiful campground and canyon near St George. Some of the sites are in the trees and against the mountain. Others are packed in tight. We had a good site with water and electricity which suited us fine.

Gorgeous - my first hike in Utah!

By JK |

Snow Canyon St Pk - Lava Flow Trail & Petrified Dunes Loop; This was very sandy & rocky in parts, but a Very Easy walking trail. We climbed to the top of one small mtn in the middle of Lava Flow- the view & colors are Amazing!!
If you use an off line GPS hiking app - it helps not to get off trails, mostly a dry creek bed. I didn’t know there was this much black lava rocks in this area. You can climb down into lava caves, we choose not to. Looks like you’re in Hawaii. We didn’t walk over to petrified dunes, just took pics from a distance. Enjoyed all views. Did 4.3 miles great hike !

Wonderful spring hiking

By Snowbirdretiree |

If you are in SW Utah or near Mesquite, NV, this is an amazing place for a spring hike. There is also great camping in the park, but we generally come for day trips. There is a wide variety of hiking, and even petroglyphs to discover! Don’t miss this great park in St. George!

Fantastic state park! Don't miss this if you're in the area

By Traveler918 |

Snow Canyon was a last-minute add-on to our Utah trip, in which we visited 4 of Utah's 5 national parks. But it was WONDERFUL. I would strongly encourage any traveler who enjoys nature to try this park!

Even on a Sunday in early April, with great weather, the park was not crowded -- while there were plenty of people, we had no problem getting into the park or finding parking. We also didn't feel crowded or rushed on the trails.

We did the Hidden Pinyon trail and also walked across the Petrified Sand Dunes, and visited the White Rock Amphitheater on our way out. All were terrific! Trail signage was excellent, park staff was helpful. If we had stayed longer in the area, we would have returned to do more trails.

A Must visit while in St. George

By JOCKOMOJO |

Snow Canyon State Park has so much to offer, stunning landscapes, lava flows, sandstone cliffs to mention a few. It is well maintained and with minimal hiking you can get the feeling of being totally alone and with one with nature. It has something for everyone. Great place to camp, great place to hike . . . just a great place.

Great Park

By Dave E |

We had a real fun time at the Park. We love the views of the mountains, the sand dunes and the slot canyon! Great photo spots all around the park. Great hikes!

Hike for a day

By bsktjulie |

Smaller state park with plenty of hiking. The trails range from very easy to OMG. We even saw some rock climbers. Cost $10 per car.

A pleasant surprise

By eremitic |

Having lived in area for 3 years, we still had not visited this park. We were told it is a fantastic place for hiking with many trails and beautiful scenery. We are not into hiking at our advanced age and poor health so we had no reason to visit until a visit from our child and her husband who hike almost every day in Colorado where they live. We drove them to Snow Canyon State Park and let them pick an area to hike in and we would kill time and pick them up when they were through. Unsurprised to see "campground full" sign at entrance. The surprise was the available picnic areas and parking spaces. Even more surprising was the spotless rest rooms with electric outlets and full plumbing. The one minus is the lack of eateries within miles of the park. We now know that the next time we visit, we will bring a picnic lunch with us. A beautiful facility that has also been discovered by tourists too as a good percentage of license plates were from other states. This place is right in area just a few minutes from home as Zions and Bryce are a long drive with heavy traffic and wall to wall tourists everywhere you look. Snow canyon offers the scenery with a fraction of the people and travel time. We were very impressed.

Hike with Camera

By Robert H |

It was a very hot day in the park. However, the scenery and majesty of the
formations made this experience all worth while. You must get off the road and do
some hiking to fully appreciate the splendor of the area. We especially enjoyed
the hike to a narrow canyon where the temp was 30 degrees cooler than the trail.
The has to be repeated when the temperature is cooler and the early morning or late afternoon to see
the best colors of the rocks.

Very pretty state park

By lucsimsthomas |

Some of the locals at St. George told us about this state park so we decided to visit since we could not get to Capitol Reef National Park because of monsoon flooding.
This park is nice but almost devoid of trees, so wear lots of sunscreen because shade is a rarity.
it is a beautiful gem though with some great scenery. We hiked the Lava Rocks Trail where you can see the remains of a long ago volcanic eruption. The terrain is gorgeous, but this trail is also filled with lava rocks that you must walk over so it seems longer than the 2.5 miles round trip that it actually is. It didn't help that we started too late in the day and it is very hot here in July.
There are lava tubes (caves) that the adventuresome can climb down into -- but they are not for the faint of heart.
Bring cash to pay because there is no one working at the entrance and it is on the honor system to pay and get a pass.

Amazing State Park

By DKPuck |

This is an amazing state park in southwest Utah with beautiful hiking trails. So many trails and all provide a unique experience. You can't go wrong with any of them!

Ten Stars! Add this to your "must do" list.

By Debby F |

Ten Stars!!! 20 Stars!!! Yes, Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks are beautiful. Snow Canyon State Park is a treasure that should not be skipped. The park has diverse scenery. It feels a little like Sedona, Arizona. Spectacular red cliffs. Climbing up the Petrified Sand Dunes was an adventure. The view from the top is so worth it! We returned closer to sunset and was not disappointed. We even went to Jenny's "slot canyon" at dusk and loved it. Whatever you do, come and enjoy this beautiful park.

St. George vacation

By Tdstein |

I spent 5 days in St. George in August and had a fantastic time visiting and hiking the trails in Snow Canyon State Park. I went hiking/running in the park twice and saw tons of great natural vistas. It was super hot but the experiences will last a lifetime.

Like a hidden gem

By Erin W |

kind of stumbled upon this as we were driving around St. George. Very cool place, highly recommended. Great for hiking!

beautiful park and campsite

By RP-Netherlands |

We had booked a site without hookup long before we arrived, and that was great. We had a large site with spectacular view. The hookup sites looked a bit small and cramped. The ranger on duty was very helpful and knowledgeable. We went hiking and saw some fabulous sites, we climebed the sanddunes, stood on top of an awesome overlook and hiked along the lava flow trail. After all that, it was great to find that his State Park has warm showers for it's guests, free of charge. This is exceptional. We had an excellent experience!

Beautiful area

By JBudge |

This is a hidden gem! If you are looking for a beautiful place and to avoid large crowds this is it! Many family friendly trails and just beautiful scenery.

Such varied terrain

By lissam151 |

Explored Snow Canyon for a few hours while staying in Washington. I was amazing how varied the terrain was throughout the park. Explored the petrified dunes and lava tubes. Both were so different from each other but equally beautiful and interesting. Try to go before it’s too hot because the trails I did didn’t provide much shade.

I LOVE THIS PLACE

By John S |

This is the fourth time we have been hear and we just love it. Get out early to avoid the crowds and the 'heat'. Google the area before you set off and plan your day. Visit the sand-dunes and the lava tubes. Make your way to Highway 18 (N Bluff St) and the overlook point. This place the beautiful and only 20 mins from St George and near Zion. Google the location for photos.

Fabulous day

By cdog612 |

The site seeing in the area was gorgeous. We were able to easily hike the area and found it easy to get around. It was enjoyable to drive around and park easily.

Outstanding park

By Kent K |

Although much smaller than Red Rock Canyon, this park has minimal crowds and a wilder feel, with similar sandstone peaks and features. We only wandered on a few short hikes, but the views were beautiful and the solitude was very nice.

Beautiful park so close to St. George

By dchristensen |

This place was great. I have been to st george many times but for some reason have never made it here. This state park is only about 15 minutes from st george. There is a ten dollar entrance fee for the day for parking. We spent about 3 hours and got a good taste of the area. I would recommend butterfly trail which meets up with the lava tubes and the overlook trail. It is a pretty easy hike for the most part. Wear good shoes and bring a flashlight to enter the lava tubes. I would also recommend going early. It was really peaceful on the way in bit by the time we were leaving it started to get busy.

Fantastic Place for photography and outdoor activities

By nycebh |

Got to experience the park when air was filled with ozone after the rain of the previous evening. Guides from Red Mountain Resort said it actually felt humid. Make sure you bring a liter of water for every hour that you will be walking the park. There is very little shade. Saw sand dunes, black lava rocks, and petrified sand dunes with striations like a checkerboard, Loved the balancing rocks and eroded sandstone rock that looked like the Sphinx. With the rain of the previous evening, the moss on the cliff sides turned pea green that looked like the cliffs were in Ireland. Saw the many large squirrels that posed for pictures. Saw the place where settlers used axle grease to paint their names on the cliffs for the Native Americans to see. Walked for almost 3 miles. Drank a large amount of water. Enjoyed seeing the places where some famous movies were filmed including "Butch Cassidy". One of our guides was from the "Snow" family who gave the name to the park. Go as early as possible in day since it can be very hot in the park.

Stunning State Park in Southern Utah

By KhimLee |

This a great State Park for a day trip, within a relatively short drive from St George, Washington or Hurricane. On its own it would have been an outstanding park but is understandably overshadowed by the number of other National Parks in the area. We visited for half a day in early fall and was able to squeeze in the Petrified Dunes and Johnson Canyon hikes. Wished we had more time to explore - the trails are largely family friendly and really surprised there are not more people, which is a nice departure from the crowds of Zion and Bryce. Only note to caution is to drink water, regardless of length of hike - with the low humidity, scorching heat (even in morning time) and high altitude physical activities can be a challenge.

FABULOUS! Even for novice hikers!

By Louise Masin Sattler |

If you are looking for different levels of hiking - including easy - Snow Canyon State Park is the one for you! There is a variety of trails - each very unique.

First, the fee is $15 for out-of-state cars to use the park. There are two rest stops with full toilets, picnic areas, and places to ask questions from park rangers. There are several areas for camping. A separate fee is needed for that, I believe. Bikers are welcome - but the hills are steep and the roads are only so big.

The Jenny Canyon trail is a mile or so round-trip. The hike is mostly flat with sandy ground. There are a few challenging areas where you have to climb up uneven rocks. But, the views and canyon is worth it!

Johnson trails are 2.5 miles (or so) round-trip. This is largely flat with sand or rock base. However, there are some areas that are mildly steep.

The Sand Dunes are beautiful and easy to see from the parking lot - better to experience up-close.

Lava Flow has several different sites to see . You can go on the flat walk to the Lava area or keep going on an even more extensive hike.

Be sure to bring water and food as none are available within the park.

Snow Canyon State Park

By Bill K |

Very beautiful state park near St. George, UT. Lots of great hiking and a very nice colorful scenic drive. The ranger at the visitor center was very helpful and even gave us a snake identification lesson. This place does not have the ridiculous crowds that Zion NP has and makes for a wonderful day trip or camping experience.

Great rock climbing

By Kevin P |

We did a number of routes here. My favorite was a bolted 3 pitch 5.6 called Barbarian. It probably went more like a 5.8 in places, but it was a good half day of fun. Recommend doing the walk off at the top, too easy to get your rope stuck if you try to rap on slabby sandstone.

Great place to hike - lots of geological things to see!

By DawnH |

Came here to hike twice - need to start early morning as it gets hot by lunchtime. Plenty of rocks to clamber over. Good signposting and free maps handed out on payment of entrance fee $6 per car. Red sandstones showing cross bedding, white sand stones and heaps of blocky lava flows with a couple of lave tubes for those who like crawling in dark places! Plenty of wildflowers too. Good cycling tracks of various grades.

A hidden gem!

By YHZGlobetrotter |

A visit to the local Visitors Centre brought this small, but beautiful state park to our attention. It was easily doable in an hour or two ... and for those not so adventurous, it can be enjoyed from the comfort of your car.

I am not that impressed for a second time

By Bob H |

I figured the first time I did a slow drive through the park which did not do any justice. So this time, I did a couple of hikes to better evaluate the park. I looked at this place with a photographic eye. I just do not see much potential here.
No doubt- the place is beautiful, peaceful but I was hard pressed to take some decent pictures. Maybe, I took the wrong trails. Maybe, I should try some other hikes. The park did its job where I needed to kill some time before heading over to Kanab.

Beautiful scenery

By maldenmusic |

We were just passing through and not prepared for anything. All we had time to do was explore around the scenic overlook. This is ong the most beautiful spots we've ever seen. Will definitely return on our next visit to St. George.

truly amazing

By flagmama3 |

This place is really truly amazing! We were here with our kids, and this park is very kid friendly! There are plenty of short, easy trails, and lots of rock scrambling for kids and adults of all ages and abilities! We did several fun trails, the highlight being the slot canyon off of Jenny's Canyon trail. The scenery is gorgeous and you could easily spend a full day here exploring and hiking around. Entrance fee is $6 cash, which is a steal for the amount of fun had by everyone in our family.

Way better than going to the big parks.

By LAtoEverywhere |

We went to Snow Canyon in the morning before it was too hot. It was about 86 degrees. We did the first hike on the paved trail, It took almost an hour and 45 minutes round trip. But the best part was before we turned around there was a bathroom to use, and I splashed water on my face to cool off, and felt so much better and refreshed. We then took another small hike, then another. Then it was time for lunch, so we left the park and had lunch, freshened up, then returned to do the Lava hike. Bad Bad Bad move. It was over 108 degrees when we came back. We had flashlights but most people had pants and jackets to protect them. You needed three people and to be very fit to enter the tubes. We got lost walking out there, so it took longer, and we were overheated and exhausted by the time we got there. I then tripped on a piece of lava and, believe it or not, it tore the entire sole of my Sketchers hiking boot off. I think that the heat was so intense it loosened it and the rock did the rest. I had to walk back super carefully because the lava is sharp and I had only one boot with a sole.

This and it was scorching hot. I feel that for visitors, the ranger should explain a little more about the tube - so that you don't go there thinking it is something that it is not. Or put it in the brochure. Like this is not just something you walk into, you have to do a really unsafe climb and you might get hurt.

I am grateful that we had water (I had an umbrella) and that I made it back without injuring my foot on a rock plant or similar.

Remember that you never know what is going to happen when you are hiking!

Can you imagine if this would have happened at Zion? So glad we were so close to our hotel.

Very lovely park

By Bonnie D |

This is a great park to hike and even drive through. The scenery is gorgeous. There are these cute lizards, petrified sand dunes and black lava. This time of year the weather was great ... sunny, not to hot, wear layers. The restrooms are spotless. Enjoy.

Short trip from St George

By Paula G |

An excellent day trip from St George, Utah!! Lots of trails to hike. Nice people and we love Jenny's Canyon. We visited on Memorial Day and it was not too crowded. I would recommend if you are looking for things to do. We spend a little over half a day there.

Just Beautiful!

By Travellots |

We needed to get away during Covid time. After hiking some national parks in Utah we visited Snow Canyon. We were not disappointed. Beautiful landscape with gorgeous colors. The day we were there the park was quite empty. On our hike Mike, a trail steward, met up with us. We were unsure of which way to go. He guided us on a wonderful hike to a beautiful overlook. Along with this he educated us about the park and surrounding areas. Thanks Mike for your kindness!!

Great State Park

By stay-home-mom-pa |

Hiked and toured this great state park while visiting St George. Terrain is awesome and there are many great views. We toured during the midday hours which I don't recommend due to the heat of the day. Make sure to bring adequate water. The park has a honor pay system upon entering the park. Please drop some money in. There is a small visitor's center that has information on the local plants and animals. This is a good place to visit if in the area.

beautiful BUT small

By Christine T |

Snow Canyon is just north of St. George, Ut. It was a must do during our trip, but I was disappointed Since my husband and I are not hikers, we only experience a place from the car. While the park is beautiful, it is also SMALL. We probably drove the entire length in15 minutes

Awesome! Just go!

By Chance |

Amazing! We spent a lot of time at Zion and had an extra day so we went to snow canyon on our photographer’s recommendation and it was awesome! We did Jenny trail and petrified dune trail. Just a quick trip but so worth it! My teen ranked it the same as the narrows. My favorite was petrified dunes! If you have a few hours do it! You won’t regret it! We went on a Saturday and it was not busy.

Peaceful park with beauty!

By jafarzaidi |

Great park with beautiful rocks, sand dunes, lava tubes, slot canyon all in one place and very less crowd,i recommend to visit this park if in this area.
This park was not in our plan but we went and it was a good decision.
in half day trip we did few quick hikes on hot sunny day. Best part is its not crowded.

Fantastic place x

We called here on our way to St George’s, what a gem of a park, it really is stunning, the colours of the landscape is absolutely beautiful s

We walk around some of the trails and were surprised to find out some of them are sandy. Hard to walk around.
Beautiful views, peaceful during a weekday.

Petroglyphs on the outer edge of Snow Canyon State Park

By Julia S |

You don't even have to enter Snow Canyon State Park to hike one of the best locations. Beautiful sandstone sand, 4 different locations of petroglyphs, etc. This hike is on the eastern edge and you park on a public street. There are some websites that have you crossing private land, however, I would never hike on someone's private land just to shorten a hike.
The hike is 5 miles and covers a variety of landscape. Any shortcuts will just diminish the enjoyment. The best petroglyphs are in a slot canyon. The slot canyon is just wide enough to walk through and has a huge tree growing from the bottom to find the sun above. It is hidden and the markers will show you the way.
Great hike to take a lunch so you can sit and enjoy the diverse landscape.
Plan on 4 hours or more. Every turn in the canyon has another slot canyon to explore. The kids will LOVE it! Lots of rock scrambling and a good way for them to burn off energy.
No facilities of any type so pack in and pack out.

Very Nice...but HOT in summer

By namaste2020 |

For camping, the facilities are great. Hiking in the park was not really an option as the trails were fully exposed to the sun. We ended up driving to Zion to hike. You had trails with partial shading, and with the water flowing it seemed much cooler.

Great day hike with caves!

By Jenkinsclan |

We found this park by chance when we were searching for nearby slot canyons that has been restricted. We hiked two paths and went down into one cave. It really fascinating to see former volcano sites and enjoy the beauty of nature as around.

Psst don't go .... let's keep the park a secret!

By BaldEagle74 |

Wonderful quiet spot after seeing Zion with bus loads of tourists! Loved pulling into empty parking lots, hiking on uncrowded trails...this is how one should enjoy our parks. We hiked Jenny's canyon, lava tubes, frozen dunes, and Johnson Canyon. All easy, family friendly trails. In Feb, blue skies, temps in the 50's...perfect! The morning sun lit the red rocks perfectly. Remember to bring plenty of water !

Snow Canyon state park

By Eunice |

Beautiful park...drove there from Vegas. I parked my car outside the park and walked in for free as the was no one at the entrance. But entrance is $10. I walked for 5 miles one way & hitched a ride with two kind ladies to my car.

Variety of hikes and scenes

By fotobug |

We spent parts of two days at Snow Canyon. I didn't mind paying for it but I wish they would give you a longer pass (e.g. 7 day pass as in the National Parks) - we would have gone back another time. We did numerous hikes - Jenny Canyon (short, easy, varied), Johnson Canyon, part of Hidden Pinyon and Sand Dunes, Scout Cave. Definitely worth some time, especially for families.

Great place to hike!

By Vern S |

My wife & I hiked Snow Canyon and we were not disappointed; although the trails are quite sandy. The best part was a hike to the top of the "natural outdoor ampitheatre" - almost 400' high and what a view - well worth the effort. The trails are reasonably well marked - which is an issue in some places. The lava tubes were different and the signage along the trail provided a great explanation of their origin.
We would definitely return if we're in the area.

Beautiful

Fun short hikes available. Makes a good day for a short trip. Campground visitors center has hats and T-shirts for sale and interesting facts, Fall is a nice time to visit.

Beautiful Park Just a Short Drive from St George

By vaughanm1976 |

We went to this park for a scenic drive. It is just a short distance north of St George. In December it was not very crowded which made driving the entire park road easy. Great scenery of lava flows, petrified sand dunes, red rock formations, and historical areas. Plenty of hiking trails and picnic areas too.

Wonderful Utah scenery.

By UncleLenny |

I've taken visitors through this park before. On a return visit, they insisted we go again! There are places to park and walk. It was hot on our recent visit, and one friend wondered why it is called "Snow Canyon" and not "Hot Canyon". It's Utah!

Beautiful

By Climb14ers |

This is a great park. Located just north of St George. There are some beautiful rock formations. There are also a ton of short hikes. Great for families. Go early in the day to beat the heat.

Visited from canada

By Michele from Ontario |

Very well run - volunteers assist on maintenance. Excellent variety and great price. Very well marked paths. Jenny’s canyon a must. Combine with one or more other trails. The lava tubes are really neat too

Great State Park for a Day's Visit

By Rennmaus_SH |

We only had one full day in St. George and this is the place we wanted to be. This was our second visit to Snow Canyon. The last visit was 12 years ago and we had such good memories of being there. The park is large enough to spend the whole day and you will pretty much see all of the natural attractions. There are so many unique and different rock formations, petrified sand dunes, slot canyons and lava rocks all in one park. Really impressive and breathtaking. There are stopping points all along the park and some have facilities, as well. They have added a tortoise walk which was really informative.

Nature's Amazing Sculptures

By Roger L |

This place is absolutely incredible and a MUST SEE. We were told about thepark last time through St. George but did not take time to go here. Big mistake! MAKE TIME to visit this stunning park and take hikes and pictures, camp or picnic. Great campsites and awe-inspiring hikes. Costs $6 to enter unless you have an annual pass for 35 dollars.

Scenery

By VICTORIA G |

This place is beautiful...not to far from St George, UT. Great place to hike, bike or camp. Back and forth thru park you will see something different each way. Great place for kids to use their energy.

Drive about

By Ralph L |

Instead of a walk-a-bout we just kinda did a drive about. Very scenic the different rock formations and overall just beauty of the area well worth not missing if visiting or even if you decided to stay and further explore.

Red Sands, Padre Canyon, Jenny’s Canyon!

By Karen S |

Incredible views and great hiking options! I hiked the Red Sands and the deep sand is no joke! What the hike lacked in elevation it made up for with a deep sand workout. Really glad I did it though. I also did Padre Canyon and Jenny’s Canyon both definitely must see!

Beautiful hidden gem

By Karen F |

I so enjoyed this park. It was a beautiful an easy hike. I enjoyed just sitting on top of a hike and admiring the beauty all around me.

I think that this was so peaceful due to not having as many visitors as the national parks around.

Incredibly beautiful at any time of day.

By GoPlaces792196 |

This is a Park that contains a photographer's dream. There are lovely mountain formations, an area of sand for exploration and wonderful hikes to enjoy.

One of my favorite State park in utah

By kanmi555 |

I love Snow canyon state park! You can see red rock, white rocks, short slot canyon and little sand dune.

Lovely

By butterflyfitjen |

We only drove through here but it was an amazing drive. We enjoyed just looking at all of the rocks and such as we went through

Great for those who like to camp

By ksexton |

We took a side trip to Snow Canyon SP on the way to Las Vegas for our departure to home. Waze took us to the overlook which was nice but had it not been for some hikers, we would have not known to go about 2 more miles down the road to the entrance. Not well marked coming in from our direction. It is a small state park and the topography is beautiful.

A beautiful state park juston the North West corner of town with very nice hikes and great access .

By Ron1733 |

We spent a week RVing in St. George and had a great time. We did 3 sweet hikes with 2-70 year old couples in this park in about 3 hours. Our favorite was the hike out to the petrified sand dunes just 100 yards off the main road. Jenny’s slot canyon was nice, but disappointing that it was a dead end. The hike to the natural bridge and stream was similarly nice enough, especially for a great afternoon , but hard to see the arch and there was almost no water.

Going hiking

By Pieter W |

Here is a beautiful area for sightseeing, photo taking, learning about nature and seeing Pioneer relics. One of nature's finest and most awesome places to see. Again bring your water and shade with.

Better Than Zion

By revrobby |

We spent an entire day hiking the numerous and varied trails of this wonderful park. Along the way, we marveled at the geology, flora, and fauna of the area.

The best part is that this is closer to town, is considerably less crowded than Zion NP, and doesn't have Zion's speed trap.

Beautiful park

By WestPalmBeachDgp |

We rented ebikes and rode into the park. We stopped and hiked Jenny's Canyon first, a short hike up into a small slot canyon. Then we ride the bike trail up to the Petrified Dunes and hiked up into the dunes for a great overlook of the park. It was lots of fun scrambling over the dunes and exploring. We then turned back and rode the Red Sands trail to the end. After returning our ebikes we also drove up to the Cinder Cone and hiked to the top. It was a steep trail and tough in the heat.

Superb- don’t miss when in St. George!

By NW748 |

This place was so beautiful! We loved it just as much as we loved Zion in a completely different way. Driving through the park is only a few miles, but when you get off and do some hiking the views are absolutely beautiful! I couldn’t stop taking pictures in some places. We did the lava tube trail and the hidden pinyon trail (which was our favorite). Definitely bring water and sunscreen because the sun ends up being more intense than you think. The trail heads are all nicely labeled. The people hiking here are definitely friendlier than at the national parks and it’s less crowded too! It is a $15 entrance fee but well worth it as everything is well maintained.

Beautiful views of sandstone, limestone and lava flows and out crops. Hiking options for everyone.

By Lutzie1 |

Beautiful vistas of red sandstone, limestone and lava flows with many places to park, hike and take it all in. Some easy trails for casual hikers and some more challenging trails for more serious day hikers. Nothing too hard. Winding trails take you up to beautiful views that open in front of you.

Super hot but really interesting!

By Finkfam6 |

We started by coming in from the north and doing the Lava tubes first, which was our longest planned hike at this site with our kids (ages 10 - 15). We got there about 7:45 and it was already really hot - bring lots of water! The first lava tube is better than the second. The petrified dunes are really easy to access from the picnic table area - not really a hike at all. Kids loved climbing them. We had to walk to get to Jenny's Canyon trailhead. By 9:45 it was pretty busy. It was a good little trail and cool slot canyon, but there were lots of people at the time of the day. Overall, worth the entrance fee!

SMALL state park with limited parking

By Trina |

I’d recommend this state park during OFF season, or very early or late in the day arrival. If you don’t have a pass the entrance fee is $10. The park is small and parking is EXTREMELY limited, so worst case, be prepared to pay the fee for a short 15 min ride through. We drove up and down the park trying to find available parking. Driving through without leaving your vehicle still pays the day use fee.

A good suggestion for those who have non-hikers in the group: park at the lava tubes parking and hike DOWN to the butterfly trail and parking. One person in the party can then hike the road back to lava tube parking. We did this and clocked just under 1 1/2 miles. A very short and quick hike/walk.

The trails are completely exposed to the sun so bring plenty of water. The trails are also incredibly populated. There aren’t a lot of defined trails in this park, so be prepared for large crowds. The ecology is fragile so I’m not sure on any options to hike off trail.

Utah State Parks are treasures

By artsoren |

A beautiful campground at the foot of amazing red rock formations. Spacious accommodations and nice common areas. Access to trails of various skill levels, and a paved pathway suitable for a walk, run or bike. Very nice hot showers. The park rangers were knowledgeable about the flora and fauna and cheerfully answered all our questions.

Outstand Bik Loop Trail

By Dennis L |

The bike trail loop is outstanding! If you're old (like me), have a friend drop you at the top parking lot and ride down one half of the loop to an agreed-on parking lot. Then haul back up to the same parking lot, and do the other side to the same end point. You see the whole trail, and it's net downhill. Hint: if you only have time for half, do the west part -- further off the road, goes through and by closer red rocks and other scenery.

A must visit location

By World_Traveler_DR |

An amazing state park, located very close-to St. George Utah. Stunning landscapes, excellent walking trails. A slot canyon for the kids to explore. Worth a visit.

Beautiful Scenery at a State Park

By tgstro |

Looking for something to do in St. George, my wife and I stumbled upon this nice little scenic attraction right outside of town. A state park instead of the larger national park it doesn't take quite as much time to see the whole thing if you just want to drive through and look around. However, if you want to spend a day hiking or biking you can take as much time as your hearts' desire. There are plenty of places to pull over and park and get out and walk around without tripping over other people, and I love the paved bike path! The scenery is just as good as the national monuments, maybe not quite as high up, but well worth the investment of time and minimal entry fee. We went back another day just to see the sunrise and the pictures turned out great! Would definitely recommend taking the time to stop and visit!

Incredible

By rook289 |

Absolutely beautiful scenery. Incredible hiking at various levels of difficulty. We stayed in the campground and went on multiple hikes each day. There are also bike and equestrian trails. In some areas you can climb the sandstone formations. There are also guided and informational hikes.

A shot drive to some beautiful sights

By Papadoc529 |

The park is only a 15 minute drive from St. George, Utah. There are several trails of varying degrees of difficulty. There is a $10/vehicle admission fee. There are restroom in the park. Take protective clothing and sunglasses as there is no shade. The vistas are varied and can be seen from your vehicle but are better seen by a short hike. Hiking shoes/boots are recommended as parts of the trails are rocky and uneven and some require walking in deep sand. There are no bike paths, but the road is wide and the speed limit for motorized vehicle is 25 mph.

Great day trip from St George.

By Stacey L |

STUNNING park. Teens loved it more than Zion in some ways. Well marked trails. Amazing views. Cool sand dune. Nice, uncrowded park. 100% recommend.

Petrified sand dunes

By Bonoochka100 |

Find scrambling on these rocks. Great view from the top. Young kids can do this if parents are supervising. Those with balance issues might have a tough time on the rocks. They’re not too steep though.

A park with spectacular geological formations

By Sally Thoe Downs |

The spectacular beauty of Snow Canyon State Park, just nine miles north of St. George along highway 18 is unique for its geological features. This State Park is comprised of volcanic cones, sand dunes, deep red sandstone cliffs, and twisted layers of rock.

Besides being quietly tucked amid lava flows and soaring sandstone cliffs in a strikingly colorful and fragile desert environment, it has several hiking trails to keep all ages curious. The majestic views and subtle interplay of light and shadow across canyon walls, lava tubes and caves arouse strong emotional responses from everyone who was there.... kids and adults who are curious and wanted more knowledge.

Small but cool

By denise b |

It's a beautiful little park and my husband's favorite part was Jenny's Canyon. It wasn't hard to get to and he loved the slot canyon

Hidden Gem

By Adobe05 |

My husband and I came here off a recommendation from a local waiter July 3rd, 2019. This is not nearly as big as Zion, but it was better for me because we could get out in several different spots and walk around. Cost was only $10/vehicle and well worth it. Restrooms were clean, and there were several shaded areas with tables to sit and eat before hiking. Easy to walk around on the petrified sand dunes and getting to the lava tunnels but I'd recommend a walking stick.

Great Hikes!

By Michele D |

My husband and I were her during the first week of July. We decided to hike The Petrified Sand Dunes on our first day but we didn’t start until around 1:00 p.m. While it’s an accurately described hike, and we thoroughly enjoyed it, it was unwise to wait until the hottest part of the day to do so... so go early in the morning while the temps are still low and bring lots of water! The second day we hiked, we went on Lava Flow and the Butterfly Trail. Both are described as Moderate and they were actually pretty easy. I’m not one who would venture into the lava chutes... but I know many who do and enjoy it. My husband has very bad knees and he was still able to do the hikes but he has 2 walking poles which made all the difference!

Exceptional and close

By merryole |

Hikes are readily accessible from the canyon road. One is immersed in remarkable natural features. We particularly recommend Hidden Pinyon. Whiptail is paved so okay for wheelchairs. For other trails, hiking poles are recommended.

My favorite non-national park

By rhoganna2 |

I have come here many times over the years. Hiking is fun here, whether you are a real hiker or just on out-of-shape old man looking to walk on some sandstone. I have especially enjoyed hiking up an old volcanic cone just a mile or so north of the park on Highway 18. Worth the challenge sine i don't ever see those back in the Midwest.

Loved our visit

By SPN21 |

Located not far off I-15 near Georgetown this is a great side trip for visitors to this area. A simple drive through is worthwhile and the landscape is dramatic. An hour or so will do the trick and provides a great break from driving the interstate. Taking a little longer to take a walk along the well defined trails is an even better idea. Will drop by again when we come this way. Cost is ten dollars per car. Staff is very informative and friendly. If this info is helpful please click the link below to let us know.

Wonderful state park 8 miles from St George Utah

By CalifTravelBuddy |

Well worth the $15 fee and the time needed to drive from the freeway to Snow Canyon. Enter and drive to the end of the road -about 6 miles. Many turnouts; parking areas and toilet facilities. Beautiful multiple colored rocks formations. If you have the time to do some hiking ot just drive slowly thru the park and then turn around at the northern gate and drive back thru the park to exit the southern gate

Scenic! Hike further if you want to escape the crowds

By 2Rocks |

Visited on Memorial Day weekend, so it was a bit crowded. We hiked further out on the butterfly trail and up on a hill to avoid the crowds. Lots of exploring to do!

Pleasure of Zion without the Crowds

By World_Traveler_Food |

OK, so the rocks formations don't soar as high and there is no river and very little greenery in this park as compared to Zion. BUT, it's also not crowded and unbelievably beautiful. We drove through the park (only about 20 miles) and then turned around. Took more pictures here than we took in the main part of Zion. Rock formations were so amazing and varied, with a lovely paved hike/bike trail paralleling all of them. We saw very few people, and those who were there clearly knew that had found something special. Bathrooms were so clean you could have eaten off the floor.
Totally worth the $6 entry fee, even if you're just driving through.

Snow Canyon State Park just a little north of downtown St. George is a little talked about INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL Utah State Park. The history it represents, the scenery, the hiking. It is the perfect place 2 B in St George! I concur with virtually every other review I have read.Great 4 photos! Go & ENJOY!

A state park that rivals the more famous national parks.

By Johann D |

Snow Canyon is a hidden gem just a short drive out of St. George, Utah. The park features red and white sandstone rock formations, lava tubes, petrified sand dunes, and slot canyons. The trails are very well marked, and range from easy to difficult. The park also has some very nice paved bike trails. The park is small, but I was able to make a day of it by spending some time on the longer back country trails such as red sands and the padre canyon trails. The best time to visit the park is from late fall to early spring. Summers in this area can be quite hot with temperatures reaching well over 100 degrees Take some time out and visit this splendid park. It is well worth the effort.

Wonderful

By Patty W |

Very beautiful park. Cost $10 per car. There are picnic areas, camping, lots of hiking, and plenty of great pictures of the formations.

Nature's Amusement Park

By Valtraveler |

Zion National Park is the international attraction that brings folks to this area and it truly is worth a trip from anywhere. But a visit to Snow Canyon State park is a must addition.
From slot canyons to box canyons, sand dunes, lava tubes, and slick rock (which should be called "sticky rock") giant mounds, this is a place where nature exhibits her best tricks. The backdrop to all these great hikes and climbs (many suitable for both adults and kids) are red, rust, and white cliffs and mountains that act as canvases for the the drifting cloud shadows.
Of particular note for younger children is the hike to Jenny's Canyon. This slot canyon is only about a 1/4 mile from the trailhead which is right near the park entrance. Once inside, youngsters will have a ball climbing on and in the many crevasses and ledges weathered into the red rock walls. With any luck, they might spot a desert tortoise as well!
A morning or afternoon is probably enough time to create a great family memory as well as the best pictures for snapchat or your scrapbook.
Snow Canyon is a "no miss" activity in St. George!

Diverse geography and hikes

My husband, son (one year old) and I love to visit Snow Canyon. Lots of trail options, so much to explore. Our favorite are the lava tubes!

Wildland Trekking Day hike to Snow Canyon

By Karen H |

My companion and I did a week "Best of Utah Basecamp" with Wildland Trekking, and, since we were going to be all the way out in Utah, we had earlier decided to tack on the Snow Canyon day hike--also through Wildland Trekking. Then, after six days hiking, we gave some thought to canceling a seventh day, but decided to stick with it. Boy, are we glad we did! It was wonderful--well worth the extra day. Kaci is a fantastic guide. Her level of enthusiasm, knowledge, and geekiness was perfect for a couple of fellow geeks. I would highly recommend this day trip out of St George.

Great Camping & Hiking!

By Lisa S |

Perfect shaded, secluded spot for our tent. Toilets/showers, fantastic hiking trails, beautiful scenery and even a lava flow cave to explore. We loved it so much we camped 3 nights. We stumbled upon it and so glad we did. Ivins is right outside of the park so convenient to get ice and groceries. We had a blast!

We have been here many times and are continuously amazed by the beauty of the desert landscape. Even if you don't have a lot of time, you can find a hike to suit your time frame, and energy and skill level.
Definitely worth a visit.

Absolutely loved the Butterfly trail and the lava tubes

By mjc_travels |

We were in St George for the night so wanted to check out this state park. We are so glad that we did. It was a hot day so we went around 6:30pm and found the temperature to be fantastic. We did the Butterfly trail and checked out the lava tubes. For a 1 mile hike, this place really delivered. It was really amazing and we made it back by sunset. I highly recommend this place - it is absolutely stunning.

Beautiful State Park with great views, hiking trails

A Little Known Gem of Southern Utah

By WyattJohn425 |

If you are in the Zion/St. George area, this secluded wonder is definitely a must see. Few visitors and large spaces make this park seem almost empty. Many beautiful views of the bright red rocks, and unique hikes allow for all age groups to wander through sand-covered hills and outcroppings. Something for all nature lovers to enjoy, from quick roadside jaunts to extended journies. A great diversity of things to see in an easily accessible area. One of my all-time favorite places to visit in Utah. Make sure to bring your water and shade, as it can get sunny and hot in the summer!

Great time

By David B |

The views and the walking trails were amazing. The weather was absolutely perfect during our visit and we spent hours exploring the beauty of the park.

We really liked this place

By Mary T |

Definitely not as spectacular as some of the national parks in the region, but there are nice trails, a couple of good picnic spots and colorful views.

Amazing views

By 1610mikeb |

This was a really great find! Amazing scenery and great hiking opportunities without the insane crowds we found at the National parks in this area.

The petrified dunes, the red rock cliffs alone make this worth the stop. Unfortunately I didn't have time to check out the lava tubes but hope to be back soon to check those out as well!

A photo dream

By Candicetravels |

Snow canyon is a must see when visiting Southern Utah. Just ten minutes from St George, the park offers many hiking options and overlook points for picture taking enjoyment. The canyon is an ancient volcanic area that offers a variety of hiking options to choose from... from easy to difficult hikes and accessible paths (even leashed dogs are allowed on certain paths) children and adults would enjoy this state park. My husband and I enjoyed the petrified dunes (awesome experience at sunset) and the extinct volcano hike near diamond valley (very difficult and steep slopes but the view at the top is worth the effort). A must do, don't miss it!

What a great place!

By RandomTraveler76 |

Came in here on a Tuesday a few days before July 4th. Place wasn’t crowded at all. I got there around 11:00 AM and did see more folks there by 3:00. Still nowhere close to crowded.

Lots of great hikes, my favorite being the one the lady at the front gate recommended - Hidden Pinyon. This trail gives you a little taste of everything - views from below, views from higher up... I also liked the Lava Tube hike. The lookout at the end of the trail gives you a terrific view and one I’ve seen in pics online.

Even just the drive through the park was really nice.

I saw restrooms were available but didn’t go in them.

Scenic drive thru Beautiful Snow Canyon

By MysticSanta |

This is a beautiful park, short drive from St George. We have taken our guests to view the park on scenic drives with sort walks to view various rock formations. Suggest you drive thru the park in one direction then back thru to view from the other direction. For those more adventurous, we have taken various hikes, from easy to moderate (there are also difficult hikes) and rented horses, there are several miles of horse trails. There is such a variety of activities to do in the park while surrounded by gorgeous red rock, petrified sand dunes, slot canyons, a large arch, you can spend an hour or a day.

Worth the detour!

By Bill A |

Just off I-15 in St. George is a gem of a state park. Lava flows, petrified sand dunes, even a small but nice slot canyon all easily available via short trails. Good signage in the park, lots of parking. Take a break from doing 80 mph on I-15 and go spend an hour.

Unbelievable place!

SO BEAUTIFUL.

SO beautiful. Well worth the entry fee. The Red Rocks are beautiful. And there are some great hikes. We got off the beaten trail and just wandered around the base of a mountain. We also really enjoyed the LAVA trail.

Code locked showers - need to find a ranger - beautiful views. Lots of bugs.

By Jason S |

Beautiful rocks. Lots of birds and ants and lizards. Some spots are spacious. Lot 26 is the best location imo. Showers are code locked so call before you arrive during "regular business hours" or arrive before 5pm and be ready to track down a ranger to get a code (we failed to bag one and went without a shower).

mini-Zion at the edge of St. George

By david H |

Snow Canyon State Park, named for the Snow family of Utah pioneers (not the weather) is a stunning piece of Utah's red rock country. It is immediately outside of St. George to the north of town. The four-mile road through the park offers a spectacular slice of what makes this part of the country extraordinary. Layers of red rock formations contrasted by several major lava flows make it a visual treat. A range of hiking trails and a paved bicycle path through the park (uphill going in from St. George, all downhill on the way back plus a comfortable camping area make it good for either day visits or an overnight stay.

Hidden gem of a State Park

By Tom Y |

Beautiful scenery 10 minutes from downtown St George.

Nice hiking trails, very helpful staff.

This is a smaller State Park right outside of St George. If you are coming to see Zion National Park DO NOT miss this smaller cousin. It is well worth a whole day, but you can also see beautiful scenery and do some easy hiking in half a day.

A true gem that locals love to share with visitors

By LM4U2 |

This park is great if you do not want the crowds of Zion but desire to see that rare red rock of Utah. There are wonderful overlooks for folks who would like to drive through; short hikes for those with kids, just a little time, or short on energy; long, back-country hikes; and miles of paved bike paths for bikes, strollers, and wheelchairs. There is a charge to visit, and please pack out your trash, stay on trail, and do not add graffiti. Hope you love it!

Two hikes

We hiked the canyon overlook the first day and then inside the canyon the second day. It was beautiful and not crowded.

amazing park

By utahhiker |

this park has it all, lava tubes, slick rock, slot canyon, petrified dunes. There is enough to do in this park to keep you busy for a few weeks.
The campground is extremely well kept, hot showers, rv sites with power and water, and a dump station with potable water. The campground hosts were wonderful and extremely helpful. This park is a must!

Wow!

I was in St. George for the Huntsman's Games. Snow Canyon was only a 20 minute drive from my motel so I spent a couple of hours between games driving & stopping thru the park taking photos. I can only imagine what Zion & Bryce Canyon's look like after seeing the majestic natural beauty of Snow Canyon! Anyone staying in St. George should make a point of visiting this State Park!

Very hot in August, but still worth visiting

By MelvinPusfinger |

We spent a few hours here at the beginning of August 2024. Temperatures ranged between 202 and 206 Fahrenheit.

There is a very small visitor center. And they do not recommend hiking in that kind of heat. But if you do, be sure to bring large amounts of water, together with water spray and wet towels. Hats are also essential.

As for the park itself, there are many beautiful places with very impressive rock formations.

Although some may disagree, Zion National Park is more stunning and impressive. Nevertheless, if you wish to avoid crowds and parking hassles, this is a good place to visit.

We would definitely recommend a visit here if you are staying in St. George, Utah.

Hidden Gem!

By Doxiemama3 |

Snow Canyon has many trails but only one that is accessible to wheelchairs. We thought perhaps we could make it onto some of trails anyhow but they were too sandy for the wheels. The park is lovely and well maintained. Much less crowded than the national parks and only $15 entrance for out-of-state visitors. Beautiful views. We learned of this gem from the locals. When we came home and told others who had visited south western Utah many times they were completely unaware of it's existence.

Wonderful

By Lisa A |

We were expecting to come to admire and snap some photos and leave. We ended up doing just a little hiking because we wanted to see it all! It was beautiful, some small peaks were easy enough for my 3 year old to climb and the views at the top were worth it. We also ventured down into the lava tubes. They were a little too dark and treacherous for real young children but the 6+ did it and loved it. We sat at the top and enjoyed the cool breeze coming out of the tube.

What a pleasant surprise

By woosailor |

We were out west hoping to see some national parks like Zion and Bryce but since we were in St. George we thought we would try Snow Canyon and what a pleasant surprise! We hiked the butterfly trail which goes up over fairly steep terrain but takes you up for a magnificent overview of the canyon and of the mountains. We were extremely pleased with the ease of getting up there although it’s not for those with unsteady footing. Getting down is more daunting than getting up.
Definitely not to be missed when in the St. George area.

Beautiful park

We hiked here 2 different days. The views and trails are very nice. There is a paved trail for those who limited as to terrain. the trails are a mix of sand, rock, lava, climbing up on petrified sand dunes etc. lots of variety. they are pretty well marked. We had a little trouble finding the Johnson's Arch Trail which you'd think would be easy when you read about it. Keep to the right. The other day we did a combo of trails and ended up hiking further than we intended. We were a little tired, but it was worth it. for the adventurous and equipped there are lava tubes you can go thru but you need lights and getting to the entrances looked challenging. If you are in the area we definitely recommend seeing and hiking in this park.

Nature's Picasso!

By Sondra W |

This canyon is nature's picasso. The colors and formations, are really spectacular, and it is amazing to consider that nature created it all. The walks are nice meandering, which you can do short, or long, but make sure you get out and see it! Bring lots of water, as it gets dry. The colors clash between white, pink, red and black, and make for the perfect back drop for photos. When you get home and look at your shots, the background almost looks fake!

Great Place

Great place for hiking or touring by car, Scenery was outstanding. Hiking trails were great fun too!
