We had a two day visit to NYC on our way to somewhere else, and from the high reviews here decided to take the Staten Island Ferry for the sight-seeing experience. With two exceptions, it was a nightmare. First, the two exceptions were the terminals on either end. They were spacious, with seating and rest-room facilities. While the restrooms were not pristine, given that thousands of people used them daily, they were well kept and very acceptable. The rest of the experience was just awful. First, there is no line to get on at either end. Hundreds of people gang together at a doorway, and when it opens, those hundreds push their way through down a long walkway onto the ferry. The first aboard line up by the windows for the view, meaning that anyone who comes after, or who needs to be seated, has absolutely zero view. I use a cane, and we are in our late seventies, and the only reason I was not pushed over in the crowded rush to get on was that the crowd was too dense to allow me to fall. So, if you are young and able, push your way on first and stand by the window. If you have mobility issues, including having a baby stroller, don't do this for the sight-seeing experience.

The Staten Island ferry is one of the very few free things in New York. It runs from South Ferry on the southern tip of Manhattan, all day every day to Staten Island, about half an hour away. And it's completely free. It lets you see the statue of liberty (not that close, but not that far either), it lets you see ellis island too. But the main attraction are the stellar views of the Manhattan skyline. They are amazing

This wonderful (and free!) ferry is a fantastic way to enjoy the NYC skyline and the Statue of Liberty while taking a leisurely ferry ride to Staten Island, although I'd recommend not going during rush hour so you don't get in the way of people commuting to work. The ferry ride takes about 25-30 minutes, so in nice weather you can sit outside and enjoy the views. The ferry runs 24/7, although it runs a bit less frequently on the weekends (every 30 minutes instead of every 15-20 minutes). As others have noted, avoid scammers trying to sell you tickets, as this is a *free* service!

The ferry runs regularly back and forth to Staten Island and is free to everyone. You are able to get photos of the Statue of Liberty and a bonus was the discounted retail outlet on the other side. We had a quick shop at Nike and then returned back to Manhattan. We really loved the boat ride.

Good luck you can stand out on the upper deck and get a nice view of the Statue of Liberty. Bad vendors outside the terminal who are very unpleasant. Real scammers.

-Invited to Staisanook where voluntary isolation for deep and complete rest is realized.
- Private exclusive Fullville for only one team

Like many people, we got the ferry for the free view of the statue of Liberty and it did not disappoint. The view was amazing and there was lots of seating and great viewpoints on the ferry. When we arrived at Staten Island we got some food and took the ferry back. Beautiful scenery and great free trip!

With everything else to visit in NYC we wanted to see Statue of Liberty but did not want to actually visit it. We caught the free Statten island ferry - loads of people but the ferry is massive. Try to get on right hand side going (left coming back). Also try to get on the front coming back for amazing views of Manhattan skyline. Just get off and walk round for the return trip

We were meeting a relative who had driven up from Philli and Staten Island meet up avoided him having to come over to Manhattan.
The free trip was excellent- prompt, on time and comfortable.
Great views of the Statue and Manhattan sky line.

Excellent service and value - it’s free! One of the highlights of our 6 night stay in New York. It’s a huge ferry with plenty of space for everyone. If doing a round trip, get off handy and walk quick to catch the ferry back as one leaves shortly after the ferry arrives.

Ferry runs frequently & is a free (yes, really free with no booking fee or even taxes to pay!!) service from which you get a good view of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island as well as the NY skyscrapers. We didn’t find a lot to do at the Staten Island end. You must get off it, but you can get straight back on.

The Staten Island Ferry is a free service! The ferry itself is huge, accommodating hundreds of passengers. You line up at the wharf, get on the ferry and enjoy the ride! On the way to Staten Island you enjoy the spectacular views of the harbour and the city, as well as of the amazing statue of Liberty, all for free! Once on Staten Island you must get off the ferry and either wander around the island or line up again to get back on to the ferry. It only takes a couple of minutes. And it's a lot of fun!

This was a wonderful treat on our first day.
We took the underground from Times Square (50th and Broadway) directly to the ferry terminal. So easy.
The ferry runs every half hour on the hour.
You don’t need to book no matter what they say. Especially if you are travelling out of rush hour.
Pick the ferry with the outside spaces, there are enclosed ferry’s these are very hot and the windows are steamed up or dirty. If you find yourself on one, quickly get off the way you go on and wait till the next one. It is so worth it.
There are places to get a snack at both ends.
There is a shopping center right next to the stain island ferry terminal or maybe visit staton island, we just grabbed a coffee and got back on another ferry back to Manhattan.
There is no catering on the ferry.
Have a great trip x

As proper tourist we did not fall for the trap to be paying for a ferry. This ferry was fast, SUPER CLEAN, safe and effective!
We saw stunning views of Statue of Liberty and had a good walkabout on the island too. Big compliment to NY city for this ferry!

A free cruise, to see the city differently, to let yourself be lulled on the waves, and why not to see something else!

If you've got a clear day, don't even think twice, just do this trip - it's worth it.
Its free and the views you get are insane. We decided to do this immediately after arriving in New York and it was the best introduction to the city and you get, with a good view of the Statue of Liberty too.
When getting on the ferry from the Whitehall terminal I'd recommend standing on the starboard side of the vessel for the best views of Statue of Liberty and Downtown Manhattan - and the reverse on the way back. (Our trip took us closer to the Statue of Liberty going, than when coming back)

It’s a must.
Try to go on one of the newer ferries I think as the older ones have less observation spaces.
Board on the right if you’re leaving Manhattan to see lady Liberty.
What’s not to love ? It’s free !!

The ferry from Manhattan to Staten Island is free. Considering that everything is very expensive in that city, it is amazing to find a real Attraction at no cost not only for residents but also for tourists. The crossing allows you to see the Statue of Liberty up close enough, the bridges from a different angle and, on your return from Staten Island, even Manhattan from a special vantage point. We took the ferry both day and night. If during the day the journey is beautiful, at night it is indescribably suggestive to the point almost to make you move for so much beauty

Absolutely, together with the Brooklyn Bridge and the highline, the best thing we did in New York. It's free. You arrive by metro at Whitehall Terminal, get in line and get on these huge orange boats. The tour lasts 25 minutes and you pass very close to the Statue of Liberty, leaving Lower Manhattan behind...an incredible sight...

Free ferry so not a lot more to say! You can get a decent picture passing the Statue of Liberty. Nice views from Staten Island.

The Staten Island Ferry was a surprisingly cool experience! Those classic orange boats we’ve seen in countless American movies — it felt surreal to finally be on one. And best of all, it’s completely free! You get amazing views of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty along the way. A perfect, budget-friendly way to take in some iconic sights. The Manhattan ferry terminal is also a great starting point for more sightseeing in the city.
Highly recommended!

The best place to see the Statue of Liberty for free.
If you’re visiting New York, this is one of the things you can do for free as a tourist. Not only is this very functional for the people of New York to travel back-and-forth for free from Staten Island to the city. This ferry runs 24 hours a day it has some of the best views of the city , but definitely a VIP to one of the biggest landmarks in the world.
This Staten Island ferry goes to the Whitehall terminal and to Staten Island terminal.
All you have to do is walk on in when they open the doors. Beware of scammers trying to sell tickets.
There is a food court, and bathrooms available while you wait for the ferry

A relatively short ferry ride and great way to see Statue of Liberty without paying for the ferry to the place. You will pass by the Statue of Liberty island on your way to and back from Staten island.

Crowded lobbies and SO filthy. At least glad we could see the Statue of Liberty on the one viewing deck.

This is a trip well worth doing from the south of Manhattan to Staten Island passing the Iconic Statue of liberty and Ellis islands reasonably closely. You also get great views of the Manhattan skyline. When you do this it is worth a little of your time to explore a little bit of Staten island and visit the tremendous Flagship brewery if you like beer and sampling a great tasting selection of real ales. There is a old fort and some scenic gardens over there as well. A more chilled vibe about the place compared to the bit manic Manhattan.

Staten Island Ferry is fantastic.. Yes, its busy.. yes, its crowded, yes, not everyone is kind and polite, but its free, its clean, both terminals are easy to navigate and its a great way to see Manhattan from the water as well as Statue of Liberty.. You also get to check out Staten Island while there and all for free. Just make sure you get the spot you want when going on as it does get crowded and people can get pushy.

Unbelievably you can take the ferry to Staten Island and see a great view of the Statue of Liberty for free. Can’t believe it’s a real thing. Don’t be taken by the guys on the street trying to sell you tickets, it’s legitimately free. Sit in the right of the ferry , upper level outside for great view. Nice outdoor outlet mall on Staten Island, literally just outside the terminal.

This is the way to go if you don't have time to go all the way to the Statue of Liberty through the National Park Service. It's free and easy to use - just stand outside on the right side of the ferry. There are also fast food and souvenir options in both terminals. Staten Island has a nice 9/11 memorial as well, so you can walk down by the water and see it before catching another ferry back to Manhattan.

The Staten Island Ferry runs from the ferry terminal next to Battery Park to Staten Island. I visited in October 2023 and ferries were running every 30 minutes throughout the day and overnight apart from at peak times when they were running more often.
At the South Terminal there's an opportunity to connect with the subway and buses. The terminal has places to get something to eat and drink and there are toilets here as well.
I would suggest that if you want some great views of the Statue of Liberty that you travel on the right hand side of the ferry as you leave Battery Park.
There are seats on the outside and if the weather is bad you can also sit indoors and create that "Melanie Griffith moment" from the movie "Working Girl".
When I travelled the staff were all very professional and I was very impressed with the cleanliness of the ferry.
Highly recommended!

Excellent way to see the Statue of Liberty and New York skyline for FREE half an each each way on the large ferry is perfect. Just head to the ferry terminal join the queue and board the ferry for FREE Get off at staton Island and visit the shops or board the next available ferry

Marvellous way to see the Statue of Liberty and … it’s free! As others have said, for the best views of the statue, sit on the right going out towards Staten Island and/or on the left on your way back. You also get wonderful views of the Manhattan skyline on the return trip. You have to get off at Staten Island but if you’re reasonably quick you can go through the terminal and get back on straightaway… there will be a member of staff showing you the way.

Finally made it to NYC! We stayed in Stanton Island and took the ferry twice, great views of the city and Lady Liberty. Until next time...

The Staten Island Ferry is a solid option if you're a tourist wanting a quick (and cost-free) glimpse of the Statue of Liberty from a distance.
The ride itself takes about 20 minutes and offers stunning views of lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, and New Jersey.
That said, boarding can be chaotic, especially during the summer. It gets hot, crowded, and the rush to get on and off can be overwhelming, definitely something to keep in mind if you're with little kids.
Most tourists skip the indoor seats to catch the views outside, which leaves plenty of space inside if you just want to sit.
It runs every few minutes, which is great, but I can't help but feel for Staten Island commuters who just want to get home after a long maybe stressful day at work and have to fight through the crowd of hop-on-hop-off tourists.
Still, for visitors, it's a fun, free way to see the city from the water.
The skyline is worth it.

Very useful to hace a look to the Statue of Liberty without spending a penny! 20 minutes ride and then you can come back immediately!

Statem Island ferry is a great way to see lower manhattan. Free to use. Easily accessible from South ferry train station located next to Pearl St. Broad St and water St

Used by commuters to Lower Manhattan, and we used it to go visit my cousin on Staten Island. But it is also a nice affordable ride and a great way to see the harbor and the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the skyline.

We did exactly what you would do if you paid to go with a different tour operator but this was free, excellent views of The Statue of Liberty and Manhattan friendly staff driving the boat and well informed at both Whitehall and Staten Island terminals

The Island Ferry offers breathtaking views of the Statue of Liberty, Manhattan skyline, and surrounding waterways, providing an unforgettable experience for its passengers. Modern amenities such as comfortable seating, restrooms, and snack bars make it perfect for families, tourists, and anyone seeking a convenient and comfortable ride. The friendly and knowledgeable crew always assists passengers with any questions or needs.
In addition to daily services, the Island Ferry also hosts special events and tours, including sunset cruises, fireworks displays, and guided historical tours of New York Harbor. With multiple ports and terminals located throughout the city, the ferry is easily accessible for passengers. Convenient scheduling allows passengers to plan their trips around their own schedules and interests, with services running throughout the day and into the evening.
The Island Ferry provides a memorable and enjoyable experience for all who take it, whether seeking a relaxing ride with stunning views or a thrilling adventure. Highly recommended!
#deepmoroccotours

A great and cheap way to see Statue of Liberty. Efficient service. I do think that the company should do more to keep the tourist boat scammers out off the building and off the Island ferry property. They will tell you that since covid the ferry does not pass by the Statue of Liberty, that when the ferry gets to statton island there is a 1 hr turn around. And they want you on there boats. The scammers boats leave from the mid town area. Statton island ferry is free, it does fo right past the Statue of liberty and unless you want to get off at the Statue use the Statton island ferry.

What a fantastic service that is completely free. A great trip to see lady liberty and the scene of manhattan. Brilliant!

Ferry staff was rude and pushy made me feel very unsafe and uncomfortable not to mention the ferry was filthy

Fun, free ride with great views of the skyline and Statue of Liberty both directions. It has been a pretty full boat every time I've been onboard. Super fun experience. Thanks NYC!

Perfect for what it is! A free view of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. You have to love crowds to do this one but hot tip- do not rush to the front of the boat - stick to the back and you will end up with the view you want!

Easy to find Staten Island ferry, we got off the last subway stop on the 1 line.
The ferry is FREE, yes there are guys around trying to sell you tickets but just ignore them and head straight into the terminal and you’ll catch the next going.
Although the terminal was busy, the ferry didn’t feel too busy and offered great views of Statue of Liberty and NYC skyline. Once in Staten Island, we wandered around the outlets before getting the ferry back, would defo recommend that too!

Great service for free! Boat departs every 30 minutes. You have to disembark at states island and board a new boat before returning. Organised well. Get a good view of Statue of Liberty. Tip is to go to right hand side going out and left coming back! Clean boat. Unless you want to visit the statue directly, this service is an excellent opportunity. Don’t be fooled by people trying to sell you tickets as you approach. Just go past and walk right on up in station.

Sunset cruise for FREE! See Lady Liberty. Get on the NJ/Hudson side of the boat to see it best! It was the right side both ways for us. It takes 30 min there and back plus 30 min wait for each boat.

Free admission, accessible and plentiful parking, clean terminal facilities ,
clean ferry (bathrooms not so much) , helpful staff at terminal and on-board = a terrific and safe ride to and from Manhattan.

I ride the ferry boat every day 5 days a week and this is the first time where the gentlemen yelled at me to and told me to move from the seating area where I was waiting for my transfer boat. Yesterday I was sitting there no problem all of sudden I am told to move. Bad enough the guy was yelling and telling people to move faster. I love the boat and will continue to take the boat but I did not appreciate being yelled at. He could of said the rules has changed in a nice way. I would have understand. But yelling at people who are paying is not right. Maybe a retrain for him will be best. I always recommend using the boat.

During the ferry ride we got a great view of the Statue of Liberty and could take great pictures. Would highly recommend as you get a better view than going to the island itself and it is free. The ferry was quite crowded and it was a long trip (30mins-1h) as you had to get off and back on for it to take you back. But overall a great view and experience.

A ferry that transports free of charge from. Manhattan to State Island. It runs every 20 minutes, it's very easy to board and find a good spot at the top. Raya super clean and welcoming. If you want to have a view of Lady Liberty, look to be on the right side going to State Island and on the left returning to Manhattan. When you get off at State Island there is an outlet. Few brands but good.

In a very expensive city it is great to get something for free. For the views of Statue of Liberty go to the right side from Manhattan and the left from Staten Island.
You must depart once you reach Staten Island but you have enough time to walk to return ferry. Return trip takes less than an hour.
One warning, ignore the men trying to scam you on the way in. The ferry is free and very easy to use.

The views were beautiful 😍
We pass the Statue of Liberty and view the magic skyline.
Crossing top and free we loved it we recommend +++

Staten Island ferry is a great way, and free too, to observe city from the water. You can see statue of Liberty, lower Manhattan, Brooklyn...
After the return to Manhattan, it's a nice walk through Soho to Washington Square park...
Skip the Brooklyn bridge too. So many street sellers and crowd... looks like a flea market in Markesh...
Do not waste your time on waiting in idioticaly long lines in financial district to scratch the bull's balls, and taking a photo on the times square stairs. Just, stroll along and pass by those who think it's worth it ...

Free boat ride, good view of the statue of liberty and some outlet shopping at the other side. All good really. 5 stars. We travelled outside at the rail but plenty of seating inside and out.

Great way to see the skyline of New York and there was also a view of the Statue of Liberty on the cruise. There was not much waiting time. A small factory outlet on Staten Island where you could spend some time.

Loved getting the free ferry, packed with mostly locals returning home but also other visitors. Left late afternoon so I could see the skyline during the day then return and see the night skyline. Great outdoor access on way out so views were good but no access outside on way back so views were through windows - still great to see but not to photograph!

FREE ferry ride to Staten Island. Great views of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan skyline. Go online to see ferry schedule. Ferry leaves from the second floor of the ferry building. Do not get pressured by one of the people in blue or purple to buy tickets, this is FREE.

The ferry is free and very practical to access Manhattan, on the crossing you can also see the Statue of Liberty

We rode the ferry to for a view of Manhattan and to see the Statue of Liberty. We were not disappointed. The ferry was on time, had lots of areas to sit or stand, and departed quickly again after it docked.
The terminals have ample room to wait as well as the usual amenities.

Well worth taking the trip and amazingly it’s free - in NYC!
Great views and a chance to chill.
Really a superb part of contemporary history.

Wish I could rate this a zero. We were there just this past weekend. The ferry was running ten minutes late and there was a huge crowd of people (us included in this mob) waiting at gate 1. Finally the ferry arrived and the staff working announced that they’d be loading at gate 3- and this began the start of complete chaos. People
Started running for gate 3- a massive rush. Then the staff announced he had made a mistake- boarding was really at gate 1- now it’s total chaos and people are running to get to the gate, pushing and shoving- crowding ahead others. This was a HUGE crowd in complete chaos. Just ridiculous! I’m surprised nobody was trampled.
Once on it was impossible to see the views. Way too many people and at that point not even with the effort. This was a huge disappointment from the incompetent staff to the very rude people. And the best part? Once you get to Staten Island you have to exit the ferry and battle the crowd again to get back on the ferry to return to Manhattan. Do yourselves a favor and skip this ferry. Pay the extra money for safety and an actual chance to see the views. I’ve done this ferry in the past (before Covid) and it was nothing like this. Hugely disappointing

The Staten Island ferry route offers stunning views of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan Skyline, making this a must-see for tourists and locals alike. Free and accessible, this 25-minute trip is both convenient and picturesque, allowing everyone to enjoy a unique moment.

We have been to NYC several times, but never done the Staten Island Ferry......not sure why. Sensational views of the city and Statue of Liberty, and amazingly there is no charge!

Free ferry taken from near Wall Street (should be the normal terminal) to Staten Island. Great view of the Statue of Liberty. We deliberately decided to take the ferry as it costs nothing and we didn't fancy the whole crowds from the official hotspot. If you are tired of not driving very close, I can only recommend this. Ferry runs regularly and everything explained great on the internet and locally!

The ferry service is very efficient. There are plenty of seats, a couple have been recently renovated.
The ferry has wifi that is good.
A great transport option

The ferry is free and therefore the line is guaranteed, but with a little patience you can get on. Remember to sit on the right of the hull to take pictures of the Statue of Liberty in the best position 😊

One way by ferry back and forth. You can get close enough to the Statue of Liberty for free, get great views of the Manhattan skyline

As the main write-up says - it’s free. The ferry runs on the hour and half-hour from the southern end of Manhattan Island. While it’s a useful commuter link for many locals, the tourist element is a good view of the Statue of Liberty as you pass, and views of lower Manhattan. Worth trying to schedule one of the trips as it’s getting dusk.

Staten Island Ferry runs every half hour between Manhattan and Staten Island. Since the ferry service is free, there is no fare gate or ticket counter. It is impressive that the entire ferry loads and unloads a full boat of the passenger in less than 5 minutes. The ferry service is puncture, and leaves right at the 30-minute mark. The view on the ferry is impressive, with Manhattan and Statue of the Liberty being the popular photo target of the passengers. There is not much to see on the Staten Island though.

Definitely a highlight of our NYC visit. Although this ferry goes directly to and from St. George on Staten Island, it provides sensational views of the Manhattan and Brooklyn skylines, the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, and it's absolutely free of charge.

This ferry was brilliant, we had great views of the lady herself, the journey took half an hour each way, both terminals had refreshment establishments, but if your quick enough you can go straight round after docking to get the returning ferry straight away, staff very friendly and helpful and best of all it's FREE!!!
Only 1 gripe and this is be careful for scammers outside the ferry terminal Lower Manhattan side, one man grabbed the door handle and shouted at me this ferry isn't for tourists and straight after that his friend tried to sell us boat tickets for 40 dollars each, he took us into the terminal and continued to try and sell us some, both myself and my daughter found this very uncomfortable and intimidating, he finally got the message and went away but it wasn't a nice experience.

A wonderful way to take a ferry ride for free and enjoy the views of both Manhattan and the impressive statue of freedom. If you are lucky you can enjoy a wonderful sunset , totally recommended and I will repeat without doubt

Busy City Ferry for foot passengers. Crowded, frequent. Free and with views of the Statue of Liberty.

Free ferry to Staten Island with view of Statue of Liberty. Total duration took about 25mins.
Try to go earlier to avoid crowds, which can be quite unruly.
Many were rushing and pushing to board the ferry and reserve the outside seats for themselves.
Across on Staten Island, there’s outlets shopping just adjacent to the ferry terminal.

One of the best things you can do in NYC and it is free. Great ferry service and the best views of Manhattan as it pulls away into the distance

We exited the Subway at Southferry and walked straight into the Staten Island Terminal and straight into the 0830 departure.
We enjoyed the views from both sides in the hurricane deck there and back. On the way back we also spent a little time at the front of the ship, but it was very congested.
You can get good views of Liberty island on the way to Staten Island. You’re slightly closer on the out than on the return.
The return ferry front area was very congested. But if you want that Manhattan shot it’s the place to be.

The crowds usually look incredibly large. However, the ferry is also huge, so you don't have to worry about missing a seat. On the way you pass the Statue of Liberty, and it's relatively close. Once you arrive, you have the option of going to an outlet center, and many passengers head back straight away. At night, you also get a spectacular view of the skyline, and the best thing is that it's free.

The best thing that you can do that is free in New York City. In a town where you never ever pay what is on the price tag ( + tax + 20% tip + service charges) it’s nice to get something for free

What a way to see the Statue of Liberty for free
Walk past all the sprukers to get the ferry terminal and all is good
Photos better on way over to the island
Can explore is you have the time
Runs every half hour

Views of skyline from ferry are breathtaking! So many photos were taken. We all loved this ride and surprisingly, it is still free!

Easy and frequent service to Staten Island and it is free of charge! Every 15 minutes early in the day and then every half hour! Great views of Manhattan and the Hudson

What's not to like .... It's FREE.
Yes, it's busy when queuing up, but there is plenty of room once on. Great views of Manhattan and the Status of Liberty.

Little free ride. Few expectations unlike paid cruises.
The view of the Statue of Liberty and the skyline is worth it!
The small outlet has little interest except the Nike store.

By taking the ferry for free you can see the Statue of Liberty, with access to an outlet.
We have a beautiful view of the NYC skyline

Do it. This one is free. Easy on and off. Amazing view of the Statue of Liberty going and coming. I did a ride over and got right back on. Inside and out viewing. Bottom floor easiest on and off.

The best way to know and appreciate the Statue of Liberty at zero cost. The service is excellent, punctual and safe. In addition to the one way leaves us in an outlet with excellent prices to go shopping. On other trips we made the excursion to the statue but the truth is that from the free ferry you have the best views.

Free boat that sails past the Statue of Liberty. During the day and also in the evening. Very easy. You get in. Cruise to Staten Island. Beautiful view of the Manhattan skyline, Ellis island and the Statue of Liberty (not very close so a zoom lens helps) You get out and take the same boat back. There is little to do on Staten Island.

This is a commuter ferry between Manhattan and Staten Island, but it’s also a great (and free) way to get a closer look at the Statue of Liberty. Ferries depart every 30 minutes from the Whitehall Ferry Terminal, and the ride takes about 20 minutes.
You’ll enjoy fantastic views of Lady Liberty, the Manhattan skyline, New Jersey, and the Brooklyn Bridge. The ferry is clean and air-conditioned if you choose to sit indoors.
Try to sit on the right-hand side for the best views of the statue on the way out. And be cautious—ignore hawkers outside the terminal who may try to sell you tickets or falsely claim the ferry isn’t operating. It’s always free and very reliable.

Our New York friend (who joined us) said that the Staten Island Ferry is a must-do as it’s free and has very good views of the Statue of Liberty and of the New York City skyline. She was spot on. It’s a wonder the ferry wasn’t leaning to one side as most of the people were crowding the rails and windows as we passed the Statue of Liberty. Not quite as close as one of the paid tours out past the grand old lady, but pretty good nonetheless.

Unreal. I can't believe how orchestrated 1000's of people got on/off this Ferry. Best of all: free. come to find out it's provided as part of the MetroCard fares. There is plenty of room for hundreds/thousands (5,000 max) per ride. Excellent views of the Statue of Liberty, Excellent views of west-lower Manhattan as you set sail to Staten. You can see the Brooklyn Bridge. Let me repeat: free. Otherwise you could pay up to $15 driving from Staten to Manhattan.

Don’t miss out this opportunity to make a free ferry trip from Manhattan to Staten Island. You get to see the Statue of Liberty from the ferry since it crosses pretty close by. And to see the Manhattan skyline from the river side. Take the ferry during daytime and do it again during the night to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Definitely worth the trip if you have time. You don't go that close the Statue of Liberty but you do get a decent view of it and an amazing view of downtown Manhattan (e.g., world trade centre etc.). No need to prebook to reserve tickets just show up. Don't get catch up in tourist traps trying to sell you expense boat trips and just head to the ferry terminal. About 30mins each way and run ever half hour (e.g., 12:00, 12:30. 1:00 etc), so if you want to return straight back to Manhattan you will have to RUN to get back on return ferry or wait another 30mins to next one! Overall great experience that is free so I cannot complain.

It's fun and free. The tour goes right past the Statue of Liberty, you can take beautiful photos and enjoy a boat ride. 😃👍🏻

This is a way to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island if all you want is to see them up close but not get off there. The Ferry goes by both. Stand on right side going then left coming back. You can get off and run around to get back on but you must exit, you cant stay on. Did I mention its FREE?

It is worth using the ferry if you are in NYC as you can visit the outlet mall and shop for bargains.

If you want to contemplate the Statue of Liberty for free do not miss this ferry that passes only a few putts from this historic monument of NY
The cruise lasts about 25min one way and is very peaceful.

A little gem!
Free
Brand new
Very clean
Punctual
In the country where you can't get treatment without money, it's a pleasant surprise to travel for free and with the highest quality.

Completely free now, this round trip offers great views of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan. And this impression of feeling what so many migrants have seen for the first time.
Please note that there is a ferry every 20-30 minutes only. Allow 1h30 in total.

Excellent free ferry , ran to time , huge seating area , warm and clean .
One thing that spoilt it were the guys in purple jackets trying to sell us boat trip tickets - saying “ the ferry is for commuters “ - the ferry is huge , and publicised in many guide books for tourists to use, so I don’t think these comments are fair and welcoming . I worry that they could cause people to be scammed into taking a tour / I found these guys rude and pushy.
The ferry itself was excellent and staff very professional . Good toilets also at terminal !

As it is free, the Staten Island ferry offers a terrific way for all visitors to get out in the New York Harbor for some amazing views of the Manhattan skyline. You will also pass by the Statue of Liberty although the views are closer on the trip out to Staten Island rather than the return given the course that the ferry takes. However, the Ferry can get packed with likeminded tourists, and you will be shoulder to shoulder with others if you want a spot along the railing. Board as soon as you can and try to stake out a spot on the right side of the ferry as you look out to the water. Alternatively grab a spot on the back (or front of the ferry when returning) for amazing views of Lower Manhattan. Once at Staten Island, you can return immediately or grab an ice cream from Haagen-Dazs or a drink at the River Dock Cafe and admire the views before heading back.

Great way to see the Statue of Liberty for free. Lovey trip over to Staten Island. Best place to sit is upper on the right hand side. Shame it is enclosed though.

The only drawback with taking this ferry is all the tour sellers trying to sign you up for something that is actually free. They were approaching us from about 500m away.
Really great way to see the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan from the water. Don't be put off by the size of the queue, we joined at the back and everyone got on. People cram down the sides of the boat to get the best views which is quite annoying.
Don't wait on the ferry to return, you need to leave the boat and get on the next one heading back.

This is a fantastic way to see the Statue of Liberty without any extra cost. New York can be so expensive, so this is great. The ferry service was used by locals as well as tourists. There wasn’t a great demand for outside seating but that could be because it was a cold time of year. As a result, I had ample opportunities both ways to take plenty of pictures. Highly recommend!

Free ferry ride across the river. Floated as an alternative to the Statue of Liberty tour for views of the the statue, it doesn’t really go past close enough for that. The highlight is the view of Manhattan skyline. Not busy and way to get a good view.

Cant see how anyone can complain about a free ferry really. Its totally free and your told buy security when you get there not to queue up yet people still do. You get great views of statue liberty also. Lots space once you get on . I did statue liberty tour also which is well worth doing but this is just nice extra. If you not got budget to do statue liberty tour id say do it this way as you will get a good view of it.

It’s been 15yrs since we were last here, we were shocked to see it was still free! Don’t get sucked into tours etc just head up the escalators and jump on! The views are epic. You get off at other end so round trip about 40min.

At the end of our 2nd full day in NYC we took the subway to the financial district and hopped on the Ferry. This is a free Ferry that goes between lower Manhattan and Staten Island and is free and runs all the time. We rode just as the sun had set so it was dark and the view of the NYC skyline was amazing! You also got a very nice view of the Statue of Liberty. Ellis Island was in view also but not quite as visible. We got off hungry looking for a spot to eat dinner in Staten Island not really knowing what the feel of this borough would be. When we got off it was like a night and day difference from Manhattan where we had been for the last couple of days. The streets were quiet, it was suburban and we walked a couple of blocks to Pier 76 for dinner which I will review separately. We had such a nice time enjoying dinner and then taking the Ferry Back to Manhattan. This is a must do when in NYC!

Many tourists do not know this trick. The Staten Island Ferry is free and you pass the Liberty. Without paying a cent. It's worth it.
On the way to Staten Island from New York, you should sit on the right side of the ferry to see the Liberty. Back then left.
You can jump right back on the ferry when you arrive. I loved it.

Free ferry ride providing brilliant views of the Statue of Liberty. Having done this before the trip is as good as we remember. Also paid for a trip out to see the Statue on a previous city visit. This free trip was just as good. May be a little crowded

Was a bit excited about what this trip would offer because there seemed to be quite a lot of people in the waiting area.
But it is a large ferry, so there was plenty of room at the back of the ferry, where we had a good view of the Statue of Liberty on the crossing.
Waited about 30 minutes to come back and here the view over the skyline was really good - and actually also got closer to the Statue of Liberty on the return trip.
Definitely thought this trip is worth taking if it's just the view and photos you want.

It's free and it's a very nice walk to see New York, Ellis Iceland and the Statue of Liberty, plus with New Yorkers.
A must do, departure to the south of Manhattan.

We had heard this was a free way of getting a boat trip that runs close to the statue of Liberty.
At the weekend it was busy but not overcrowded, with ferries running every 30 minutes. Queuing was orderly and everyone got a seat and a good view on the journey. Well worth doing.

Take the subway to the Whitehall station (battery park) exit to South Ferry. Do not give attention to the people trying to sell you tickets. The State Island ferry is FREE. Walk up the stairs inside the terminal, keep straight, and check the next ferry times on the big screen. Once the ferry arrives and the gates open, you just need to get in end enjoy!!

The Staten Island Ferry was a great FREE way to see the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline. It was easy to figure out how to get on and off. And was a nice way to sit and relax after lots of walking around the city!

free service between manatthan and staten island. The service is free and operate every 30' minutes 24 hours 7\7. If you stay on the back you can see lady liberty and manatthan sky line

People say nothing good comes for free nowadays but based on a FREE trip from Whitehall Ferry Terminal to Staten Island, I beg to differ. This was GREAT. Avoid being hoodwinked by hawkers on your way down to the city ferry terminal. Wait in the beautifully cool and clean terminal building and hop on for wonderful views of The Statue of Liberty. In my humble opinion the statue was built to be viewed from the water so it is somewhat unnecessary to pay to be dropped off on the island itself unless you really want to get up close and personal with Lady Liberty.
This was the best sightseeing trip we had so far.
Well done to NYC for keeping Liberty Free.

Great way to see the Statue of Liberty. Free boat ride across that runs every 30 minutes. When you arrive, you must get off the boat to get back to starting point.

Great Free ferry to see status of liberty!! They runs 30 minutes and the ferry is huge!! Stay on the right side on the way to the island if you want to see the status of liberty, and on the left side when coming back to manhattan!!

Take the ferry and take a ride to get the Skyline and the Statue of Liberty in the distance... nothing like that. It is perfect. A place and an activity that I recommend.

excellent way to see the Statue of Liberty. but on pictures it doesn't look so good, it's small and you always have people around trying to take the best shot, so if you are looking for a perfect picture with the Statue, it's not the best option. but just to watch it, enjoy the ride for free it is the best way!

Reliable, free and easy to grab a seat. You can see the highly over rated lady liberty. Sit on the right side of the boat going to staten island for that.

The ferry that connects the lower part of Manhattan to Staten Island is an experience, accessible to all because it is free, that truly cannot be missed. Invest an hour at sunset and do a round trip without stopping (in any case you have to get off upon arrival, only to then get back on immediately). The spectacle of the Statue of Liberty and the skyline illuminated by the setting sun will leave you breathless!

A great way to see the Statue of Liberty as free. Lots of good views and some nice outlet shops when you get off on Staten Island.

Looking for something fun and interesting to do - Oh and it's FREE. Take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry. You can see the Statue of Liberty and a great view of the Manhattan Skyline. Plenty of room to spread out and get a good view. They also sell snacks onboard and there are bathrooms as well. It's worth it to just ride even if you don't visit Staten Island or Manhattan.

The Staten Island Ferry goes between Battery Park in Manhattan and Staten Island about every 30 minutes. It is free! The boats are quite large and can hold several hundred people. They sail right past Liberty Island making this and excellent and low (no) cost way of getting views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and Manhattan. Some of the boats have outdoor viewing decks but one of the older decks is almost entirely indoors, with most of the viewing being through glass windows.

After getting through the smoke of people smoking marijuana you then fight the crowd to get on the free ferry. I had a mother-in-law in a wheelchair which didn't make matters easy. We sat inside the ferry since we had her and the crowd fought for places outside on the railings. The trip didn't last long but she wanted to see the Statue of Liberty and the ferry provided that. I do think the police should be present at these attractions as I only see them at Times Square bunched up in a group. Of all the site seeing I never saw one officer at any of these sights except the 9/11 memorial. The people smoking marijuana at this attraction should stop and people arrested.

This is an absolute must do! The ferries run all day and into the night closing really late. The crews work hard and are absolute professionals. It’s remarkable how quickly they turn these beasts around and keep them in top condition. For NYC visitors, you’d be foolish not to do it. There’s plenty of room and the views are stunning. These ferries are enormous. Above all else, it’s free. City and Port authority Police ride them or are at the terminals. They are really safe and my mother who is 64 said she would ride them alone. Sniffer dogs in operation all day. Walk on walk off without any searches. I’m frankly amazed it’s free. It’s such a massive operation. At Staten Island there is plenty to see and do, however, just riding the ferry is an experience all of its own. Board the subway trains (really cheap) and exit at south ferry station. Walk up the stairs/ escalators, and you’re at the terminal. Fully accessible. Beware of scammers outside the terminal trying to sell you tickets for their tours etc. If you don’t mind not going to liberty island etc (which is worth doing) the SIF passes right by it with amazing photo opportunities. Once you’ve done it, go back again at night. You won’t be disappointed. And did I say it’s free?!! Genuinely. It’s free. No charge whatsoever. Don’t miss out.

It's for free! Take a round trip. You see the Statute of Liberty so no real need to go up close with a separate trip. Do some shopping on the other side and have a bite to eat. Then return. Stunning views of Manhattan skyline.
Hop onto the right of the boat if you wanna see the Statute. Stand at the front on your way back.

horrid they just left us at the island for 30 mins with no option of going back . the guests should hv the option of whether they want to get off the island or not

If you are in NYC, this is a must do! No cost to ride the ferry over and back. It’s clearly not a “tour” with a guide, but it’s free! Gets within a couple hundred yards of the statue. Pretty quick subway ride from the theater district which only cost $2.90 each way and drops you off right at the ferry entrance.

PROS
* The transportation connection between Manhattan and Staten Island
* This is primarily a commuter transportation service
* It is absolutely free
* There is 24 hour service, every half an hour
* Gigantic humongous incredible multi level bright orange ships holding at least a thousand people- so it seems to me
* This commuter service provides fantastic incredible views of iconic places such at the Statue of Liberty, New York Harbor and the Manhattan Skyline, as week as the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge to Brooklyn
* The two docking points are massive gigantic buildings
CONS
* Crowded- almost always crowded
* So many tourists out for a good time; how do the local commuters tolerate that?
* It is difficult to find an outside bench seat or even a place along the rail
* Walking through the boat in transit can be hazardous because of dine waves but especially the crowds of excited foreign tourists
* When the boarding gate opens, there is a mad rush to get there ship
“I VISITED THIS PLACE”…
… because it is a truly iconic New York City experience and I want to go again for the first time in 50 years and to take Princess Place to see and experience it. Of course once we departed from Battery Place in lower Manhattan, she revealed that she suffers from nausea on the sea.
As for me, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. I clung to the Statue of Liberty side on both journeys- that is on the right going to Staten Island and on the left returning to lower Manhattan. I did not even go inside, nor to the other side in order to see the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge and Brooklyn- a small mistake.
I watched many of the tourists and took "helpful" 👍 photos 📷 of them.
WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
Yes- it was free
WOULD "I VISIT THIS PLACE" AGAIN?
Yes for sure- when I escort and guide Prince Place Senior in May 2026
ADVICE from IVTP
* It is a great and free iconic New York City activity- be sure to do it
* Be prepared for impatient crowds in the building and for the mad rush when the gate opens
* Be sure to be on the right side when crossing to Staten Island; choose your side on the way back
* The Lower Manhattan Skyline is seen better from the left side on the return approach
* Beware and be wary of hucksters trying to sell tickets to the Staten Island Ferry- it is free
I hope that you found my review and photos 📷 to be "helpful 👍

We got the Subway from 50th Street to South Ferry and walked across the street. There were loads of people waiting but the ferry holds over 5000 and in comparison it was nearly empty! Didn't take long to get everyone on and the crossing was around 30 minutes. Everyone has to get off; you can't stay on the ferry for the return trip. We went in to the terminal and get back on the next boat coming back to Manhattan. The crossings were calm and comfy and the boats had plenty of indoor and outdoor seating as well as a bar and toilet facilities (there are also toilets in the terminals). The views across the water were spectacular; you get quite close to the Statue of Liberty and the view of Manhattan on the return journey is awesome. We had a lovely sunny day which made it better and for a free trip on the water, the ferry can't be beaten!

Great free service, runs every 30 mins! those we went in the none rush hour times it was still very busy but there is so much room once on board you don't feel it at all its just when your waiting.
Upon entrance there are lots of guys in red trying to sell you crazy $$ boat rides to the same thing, don't fool for it.
This is a great way to see the statue of liberty, we got some amazing pictures! you can ride straight back ( you do have to exit off) or can have a look around.

A brilliant authentic New York way to see Lady Liberty and the fabulous Manhattan skyline - and it's free!

Started looking at ways to see the Statue of Liberty and eventually found a recommendation to just take the Staten Island ferry. Perfect and no cost. Highly recommend it yes

Awesome free ferry. Short ride to nyc and had amazing views. We also got to see the Statue of Liberty. The ride back at night is amazing as well. The city looks so beautiful full of lights.

A free mini cruise with a view of the Statue of Liberty. Definitely a must if you don't want to visit the statue museum.

I love that this is free and a good way to see the statue of Liberty. It was very crowded though, especially the top floor facing the statue of Liberty (right side of the boat when leaving Brooklyn). The view from the lower decks are just as good though and less crowded. It was pretty chilly, I'd bring warmer clothes next time. The breakfast food from the terminal was tasty and not too expensive. For the way back you need to disembark and catch the ferry again.

Enjoy the approximately half-hour crossing from the Whitehall Terminal towards Staten Island (and if you hurry, you can also take the next ferry back) - ideally just before sunset, as this free crossing offers a sensational view of the city and Lady Liberty (the Statue of Liberty).

NYC is an archipelago so the best views are from the water. Why spend $75 on a tour when you get the same views for free? It is a constant 30-minute ride between Manhattan and Staten Island so take advantage of the service. Walk around the ferry to get different views. Ample seating. You can go explore Staten Island when you dock or just hop on the next ferry back to Manhattan. No tickets are needed. Ignore any vendors outside the terminal, they are con-artists. The ride is free.

There are several reasons to ride the Staten Island Ferry that runs 5.2 miles through New York Harbor between Manhattan and Staten Island. It runs 24/7. It's free. It offers stunning views of New York's skyline. And while hard liquor isn't sold on the boat, you can obtain the cheapest beer you'll find in New York City, only three or four dollars a bottle. There are two departure points -- St. George Ferry Terminal at 1 Bay Street, Richard Terrace in Staten Island and Whitehall Terminal at 1 Whitehall Street at South Street in Lower Manhattan. The ferry runs 24/7 and is totally free for a 25-minute ride from lower Manhattans to Staten Island. There are 10 boats that leave every 15 to 20 minutes during peak hours and every 30 minutes at other times. Each boat has a crew of 15 and can carry 3,055 passengers and 40 vehicles. The ferry originated in 1817 and once was owned by Cornelius Vanderbilt. It hosts nearly 24 million riders annually and is the busiest ferry route in the United States and the world's busiest passenger-only ferry system. Bring a camera with plenty of film so you can snap postcard pictures of the downtown Jersey City skyline, the lower Manhattan skyline, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Governor's Island and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.

Went on the Staten Island Ferry as I had to experience the trip, as seen many times on TV.
It was worth it.

This is the easiest experience in NYC. Head straight to the Staten Island ferry sign and walk straight in, you will likely see where people are queueing for the ferry which is every 15 mins - there are also tannoys telling you the gate number. No tickets or admission required just straight onto the ferry, less than 30 min ride and then straight off and get on the return ferry if you just wish to see the Statue of Liberty and the NYC skyline.
Top tip - stand at the back of the boat for the best views on the way to Staten Island

Convenient, free, and scenic! A perfect way to relax while taking in views of the water and NYC skyline. A must-do for tourists

The Staten Island Ferry connects lower Manhattan with Staten Island, The ferry is completely free to ride. Manhattan Island and Staten Island are boroughs of NYC, The Staten Island ferry is open to all. Th trip across the NY Harbor is an inexpensive day out, there' are a plethora of attractions for visitors on Staten Island.

Available round the clock, seven days a week.
Frequency is every 30 minutes
Free service
The ferry has three decks
There are seats in the centre and benches on either side.
There is no air conditioning inside the cabins
For good views, it is better to stand outside because if you sit on the benches outside, people will stand in front of you to block the view
Enter and stand on the right side of the ferry while travelling to Staten Island for a view of the Statue of Liberty. On return the statue is seen from the left side.
Journey takes 25 minutes
Every trip is full of travellers
There are washrooms on the ferry
As you get down on the Staten Island terminal, there are a few eating places and a restaurant. There is a drinking water fountain also

Firstly the ferry is for free which is extremely good and it runs often so you dont have to wait for a long time. The views of southern Manhattan , Brooklyn, Jersey, Ellis Island , Statue of Liberty and Staten Island are as good as they come so its recommended.

Great views of Lady Liberty, the Manhattan Bridge & Skyline, and the Brooklyn Bridge & Skyline. Not much to see on Staten Island. Turn around & come right back. Free ferry.

Terrific free opportunity to see some of NYC’s most iconic sites. So here’s your best tip for a unique uncrowded way to enjoy the sights. After boarding, head to the stern of the ship then take the stairs down to the lowest level. It’s usually empty and you will have an unimpeded view of the Manhattan skyline from the back and Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty from starboard. Plus bridge views as well.

A great FREE sightseeing ferry. Make sure to get to the right hand side on the way out to get the best views of the Statue of Liberty

It was a very good trip, I mean it was free, so that's always a plus. The view was amazing, I got to have clear cut photos of the Statue of Liberty. The ocean breeze was so nice, it was decently clean, the wait for the Ferry wasn't so bad either (only about 15 minutes). The only negative I had was that I had to wait an extra 20 minutes because of a "technical issue" which sucked but I'm sure it doesn't happen often. Other than that it was a good quality trip to get me from point A to point B.

Took the Staten Island Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty. Make sure you sit on the right to get the best view. Also note that when the ferry arrives at Staten Island you need to disembark, line up again and catch another ferry back. Great that it was free too!!

It is not problematic
And you get really super close, and free of charge, to the Liberty Stature.
I'm back and forth. Just had to change the “ship”.

A beautiful tour to see the skyline and Miss Liberty, and it's free! In front of the building someone tried to sell us a ticket, don't fall for it!!! The ferry is free! We took the next ferry back to Manhattan. That was definitely worth it!

A great and, above all, free way to see Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, etc. from the water.
You can also get to an outlet on Staten Island.

The free Staten Island ferry was a great experience — couldn’t believe it was actually free! The views of the Statue of Liberty were amazing and the whole process was very easy and well organized. There are scammers outside the terminal, but just say no thank you and keep walking and it’s fine. Toilets are available both in the ferry port and on the ferry itself, which was really convenient. Definitely worth doing if you’re in New York.

This is a terrific way to get up close to the Statue of Liberty, and see the Manhattan skyline FOR FREE! As advised in the guide books, I avoided peak commuter times, which meant that just about everyone had the same idea. As it's free, there are no ticket checks, therefore no queue - when they open the gates the crowd surges on. If you want to get good photos, you'll need the open deck, and also to be on the correct side - Liberty is on your right heading to Staten Island, and on your left on the return.
The terminal area on Staten Island offers toilets and a few cafes & shops. We didn't have time to explore any further, just got the next ferry back.

This is definitely one thing to do, whether you are travelling from NY to Staten Island or just want to get a great view of the Statue of Liberty. We stayed on Staten Island and used the Ferry twice a day. It runs every 30 minutes and is smooth, with great views. We got the parking app for Staten Island parking, right beside the terminal. The ferry only takes 25 minutes and is on time. A great experience. The staff are very helpful.

Public transportation from lower Manhattan to Staten Island with ferry recommended the upper outside deck for best view of Manhattan skyline and verrazzano Bridge

Rode the SI ferry on a Sunday afternoon. Not crowded at all. Stood at the back of the boat which gave the best views of the skyline as we pulled way from Manhattan and also fabulous views of the Statue of Liberty as we passed her. Whilst you don’t get too close, I felt it was close enough to satisfy the need to tick Statue of Liberty of the “to do” list. We had a quick walk along the prom as we didn’t quite make the next ferry going back, before returning to Manhattan. Best of all, this was free. Lovely way to pass time on a sunny day. Would thoroughly recommend.

Easy to reach and doesn’t cost a thing. Ferry takes some 25 minutes and goes quite close to the Liberty Island. Depending on the ferry there are number of open-air areas on the both ends of the ferry for a photo-moment.

Free trip to the shopping outlet village, straight past the Statue of Liberty.
Dont fall for the free information representatives outside the terminal saying you don’t get close or see the Statue of Liberty.

If you're not bothered about the immigration museum then there is no need to pay for a trip to the Statue of Liberty. Just take the free, every 30mins ferry to Staten Island for great views and not too busy.
Just beware of the street entertainers outside the ferry terminal who con you for money - they promise a lot but are scammers.

Highly recommend. Great views of Manhattan and liberty for FREE! Don’t pay the high cost of the liberty tour if you don’t want to go there and are just interested in a close up! Takes about 30 mins one way then you exit and get back in again for the return. Enter on the right side and up the stairs when heading to Staten Island (and reverse coming back) for best views! We headed right to the back going over. When you exit in Staten Island there are outlets also attached you can go to. This is totally free so don’t let ticket sellers walking around that area try to scam you for paying either!

Take the free ferry to see the Statue of Liberty up close. Stay on the right side of the boat on the way to Staten Island and the left coming back to Manhattan for amazing skyline views.

This is a handy, free and regular ferry that gets you to Staten Island in about 20 minutes or so. There was ample space on-board.

One of the best free experiences we did in New York. Excellent views of the statue of liberty and skyline of Manhattan. An absolute must, my family thoroughly enjoyed and the ferry waws so frequent. One point I would make though is directly outside the ferry terminal are sales people for the statue of liberty tours. They tried to put us off the ferry by telling us "this ferry takes you to another borough, is this really where you are looking to go, I am just offering this as free information for you, the boat takes you to a completely different borough". If I wasn't aware of this type of sales tactic from previous reviews it may have swayed me to wonder if it was the right ferry. I thanked them for their free information but told them I was happy with the trip I was taking.

The ferry ride was nice . Boat was clean and well maintained. we went because we wanted to see the Statue of Liberty! And we also enjoyed the outlet mall. Shopping was great!

The fact that it is free is a really good thing if your looking for something cheap but you could pay $4 for the midtown one and that has much better views of the Statue of Liberty and is just a much nicer journey, gets you higher up and much calmer in general.

Never get tired of this ride. Now you can get off the terminal in staten island and there’s a shopping area! We had such a great time.

Although I have been to the Big Apple on a number of occasions over many years I have never taken the famous Staten Island Ferry. So, back in June my son & I decided to correct this and we headed down to the terminal at the southern end of Manhattan and joined the crowds of people in the terminal moving slowly but surely onto the next ferry (they come every 15 - 30 minutes or so during the main part of the day outside the rush hour periods). What everybody likes is that this is free. And the ferries are quite big so even when there are a lot of people you can still find a place to sit down. We did so and made sure that we sat on the starboard side so that we could get a good view of the Statue of Liberty. The crossing over to Staten Island is just over 5 miles & doesn't take so long really, ca. 25 minutes or so. I'm so glad that we finally made this trip (and back of course). Another thing ticked off the bucket list...

We are from London
We had dinner locally at Fraunces Tavern and then walked across and took the ferry trip (free!) and boarded for the 8.30pm ferry, disembarked (you cannot stay on board) and then took the 9pm ferry back to manhattan.
Not that busy.
Very windy- but we were outside in the deck most of the time.
Great views of the city at nighttime.
My top tip would be- this is a staple of transport for locals and of course the priority for them is to get off the ferry and get to work, home or whatever. I would advise waiting til the very end of the trip and then going downstairs to disembark once the doors have opened.
Would definitely recommend it. Especially as it’s free - but avoid the busy peak times and be respectful that this isn’t a touristy thing for many people who are just going about their daily business and also for homeless people where they are able to -for free- be warm for 30 minutes (the ferry inside is lovely and warm but outside in the elements is cold- depending on the time of year!)

For me this is the must see experience in New York, especially because it's free. Every time when I come to the city I came to this ferry just experience the skyline daytime and night time. The views are stunning.

Excellent free service. Perfect way to see the Statue of Liberty. Ferry was on time. Loading and unloading fast and efficient. Great views of the area.

A must see for spectacular views. It’s free, a commuter service and you’ll need reasonable weather to get the most of it for the views. Ho in non-peak times.

It's really great that you can enjoy the Statue of Liberty and the view of Manhattan for free. The terminals are very well organized/signposted and the ferries are clean. Clearly recommended.

You have to get off at battery park and direction staten island it is free the crossing lasts about half an hour a view as close as possible to the statue of freedom manhattan bridge of brooklyn. Arrival and shopping at the outlet especially with super interesting levis and nike. Beautiful outing under this beautiful sun after the flood of thanksgiving

The trip on the Staten Island Ferry is much more than just a transfer. The panoramic views of the New York skyline and the Statue of Liberty are stunning. It is an experience that offers a unique and memorable perspective of the city. In addition, the service is efficient and accessible, turning each trip into an adventure that I would recommend to any visitor or resident.

The staten island is free, there is certain times,be aware that you cannot stay on ferry once you reach Staten island you need to get off and reboard other ferry back .Amazing views of Lady Liberty

I have seen the statue of liberty 2 different ways. The first time was on the ferry to Lady Liberty and to Ellis Island. The second time was on a tour boat of the harbor. This time, I read many reviews about how the Staten Island Ferry was the way to go and was FREE. We waited 15 minutes for the ferry and enjoyed a 15-minute ride to Staten Island where we disembarked and went inside the terminal and recorded the ferry and headed back to Manhattan. 1 hour long and free trip. There are great views of the City and the Statue. This was by far the best of the 3 ways to see her without getting too close and spending too much time. After our ferry trip, we saw a very long line waiting for the Statue ferry. There is no way I would have waited in the line for over an hour.

A ride on the Staten Island Ferry is not to be missed. For free, van will go from South Ferry to Staten Island and back. From the ship you can enjoy the views of Manhattan's skyline, the Brooklyn Bridge, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Since the trip costs nothing there is always a lot of tourists on board and you should quickly secure a nice place outside (side or front or rear on board) to have a nice view.
After the ferry has docked, the ferry must be left. For the return journey, therefore, another queue is due.

My husband and I were visiting New York April 21st 2023. We were on the ferry to Staten Island to see the Statue of Liberty. There was a group of people and tour guide on the boat between 11:30 and 12:30 April 21st. The tour guide had long dark hair in a pony tail (male). When we got off the boat and returned to get the boat back about 12:30, we were standing and waiting for our friends. We were standing beside the group, as it was very packed in there with people coming and going. There was not alot of room to move around. All of a sudden the tour guide yelled to my husband who was looking his way (not intentionally) to leave his group and stop listening to him. We were in shock! We were in no way doing anything wrong and were standing there in a free public place! This ruined our trip and whole ferry and sight seeing experience!
If anyone knows who the tour guide was on the Statten Island Ferry on April 21st 2023 between 11-12:30 who was a male with long dark hair in a pony tail I want to put a complaint in about how rude, arrogant and ignorant this man was to yell at my husband in the land of the free for doing nothing wrong but standing beside his 'group'!! Please spread the word as I want to lodge a formal complaint.
This was unacceptable, rude and just awful to experience on one of the best trips of our life!!

Loved our trip on Staten Island Ferry, and it’s FREE !
It was a very rainy day when we were on this, however it did not spoil our trip, just didn’t get a decent view of The Statue of Liberty on that day.
The ferry was nice and clean with plenty of seating, there was a queue to get on & off but that’s to be expected in August and the fact that it's Free

Good way to see the Statue of Liberty. I hadn’t realised there was an outlet centre right by the Staten Island terminal. Sadly, we didn’t have time to investigate, but will on the next visit.

This is a free ride from lower Manhattan to Staten Island and back. You can great photos of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island from the stern.

I really enjoyed taking the free ferry to Staten Island, the views while sailing across the Hudson were great, especially returning to Manhatten at Sunset, it was phenomenal. Staten Island itself didn't have must to offer me but I would do it again for the sake of the boat ride.

What a great way to see Manhattan from the water. Huge, spacious ships with balconies to catch the air. You pass the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

This was by far, one THE best things to do in NYC! This was my 3rd visit to NYC & first time on Staten Island Ferry. A must do experience

More than 30 years ago, I "discovered" the Staten Island Ferry. Cost 25 cents then.. now completely free. The size of the ferry has grown considerably over time. The travel time Manhatten-Staten Island has therefore been considerably reduced. But still the ride on the water is very nice. You pass Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty a fairly short distance away.. especially miss Liberty is impressive in terms of size. From the boat also beautiful views of the Manhattan skyline and - new - the risen skyscrapers of New Jersey and Brooklyn. Remains a fun ride every time!

Fantastic views of New York from ferry - great to see the Statute of Liberty from the water interesting visit historic building and iconic

Regular and reliable service to get you away from the hustle of NYC. However many outlets on the retail park are closed down with only the one bar. Doesn't go close to the statue of liberty so no new photo ops

What a lovely, relaxing experience.
When you board, go to YOUR right. That's the side that goes closest to the Statue of Liberty. However, we were able to move freely from side to side and from upper to lower deck.
Restrooms are on the ferry- use them! It's difficult to find public restrooms in the city.
We rode straight the Staten Island, got off, and immediately got back on to go to Manhattan.
Nice and warm inside, but ability to go outside, too.
I recommend this FREE ride to everyone!

We didn't have time to visit Liberty Island so the next best thing for us on a cold/rainy Saturday was the Staten Island Ferry. We were able to sit indoors on the boat, see the Manhattan skyline and the Statute of Liberty.

We took this free ferry to get some fresh air and get a view of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan on a beautiful Saturday in October. Not too crowded and we had a great experience to and from Staten Island.

I've been lucky enough to visit NYC several times and always enjoyed seeing the iconic ferries plying their trade from Manhatten to the State Island, but this was the first time I'd ever ridden them. We wanted to see the Statue of Liberty but not pay $100 for the privilege and also, lacking the time to take a tour.
The fact that the SIF is free also appeals to my socialist leanings and as it was a pretty day, the promised views of the iconic statue and the Manhatten skyline didn;t disappoint. Most of the passengers on our ferry did the same thing as we did, namely, disembarked at Staten Island and zipped straight back around to catch the return. Since the ferries leave every 30 mins, on the hour and the half-hour, and the trip takes about 25 mins, this can be done with minimal delay. Maybe in bad weather, with a slower crossing, it would necessitate some waiting. Note that you can't simply stay on the vessel you crossed on - all must go ashore at the end of the crossing.
There are, I think, 19 vessels in the fleet and on our outward journey, we had one with open decks but not all of them do and the return was on a similarly large boat, but one with windows and not open decks so the views were clouded and blurred by very dirty windows. If both trips had been on such a vessel I would have felt somewhat cheated to be honest. I guess it is luck of the draw. Still, super-worthwhile doing especially if the weather is clear

Visiting family in NYC and we took the ferry on a foggy December night. In my opinion, the fog played well with the lights at night to make for a fun sightseeing adventure.

Fun trip. Go to the right side leaving Manhattan. The lighthouse museum is just outside the Staten Island terminal. Don't forget to look at Ellis Island too.

The ferry is free. Man also gets there well, either on foot or by subway.
The ferry offers spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline. She also drives past the Statue of Liberty.
There is plenty of space on the ferry.
The ferry can be combined with other activities in southern Manhattan.

This ferry is free so because of that then this was great but other than that... This is a free ferry so you can see the statue of liberty from far away so if you what to take a photo then you should bring a good camera and zoom lens (we didn't) but other than that its a great view. The ferry is old and outdated and dirty but it seemed safe I guess. This hole country is outdated but that is normal for a 3rd world country like this is so when you think of that then its great ferry.

Great easy trip to the Staten Island outlet. Trip was pain free and some great views on the way can be seen.
Would use again when in the city, o and it’s free

Definitely worth doing, as it’s free and offers good views of the Statue of Liberty. However, for us, it doesn’t go close enough and we did another trip to Liberty and Ellis Island, later in the week. You need to be on the right side leaving Manhattan and the left on the way back, to get the best views Lady Liberty

Round trip takes about an hour and a half. You enter the Terminal, you follow the flow of people, you go up without even being checked. Once in Staten Island you get off and immediately get on the ferry that goes back (just always follow the people). Outside the Terminal, to avoid smart guys trying to scam you simply ignore them or hold a GoPro or Cell pretending to make videos and to avoid being caught on camera they will stay away.

The ferry is free and worth taking the time to do. You get an excellent view of Manhatten, Brocklyn and the Statue of Liberty.

The ferry is still the best way to watch the Statue of Liberty. And especially when coming back to manhattan also the skyline. As it’s free it’s a must do.

It’s free unlike other ferry services, whilst it won’t take you to the island to then walk around it does allow you to get within a nice picture distance from it. Ferry’s are running frequently so you can get on one and get on another on the other side to get 2 views of the Liberty statue and views of lower Manhattan

Take Subway to Whitehall St/South Ferry. Ferry is free to ride and great vantage point for NYC sights. Recommended trip.

We took the ferry boat, free, which connects the island of Manhattan to that of Staten Island and allowed us to pass by the Statue of Liberty and, on the way back, to get the perspective of Manhattan from the sea ... simply spectacular.

Always a pleasure to take this ferry to spend some ECUs at the shopping center! What’s more, what’s more pleasant than having the statue of liberty pointing at the tip of your nose! What a great lady who sits in the middle of her star! The only downside being that the staff could possibly inform the tourists (the much too stingy to pay the real shipping to go see the statue downstairs) which way they will have the chance to even!
The captain was very very charming and friendly

The Staten Island Ferry takes you from Lower Manhattan to the fifth borough of NYC. The duration of the ferry is 25 minutes and is free of cost. The ferry is normally used by tourists to take in view of the Statue of Liberty.

This was a great way to see the Statue of Liberty and the skyline of the city for free. We went at rush hour, because that's how it worked out in our schedule, but we got on the first ferry available and had a good view. It was easy to take the subway right to the ferry station. They make everyone get off at Staten Island, but we walked around and got right back on. Very happy with this experience.

The perfect FREE ride to see the Statue of Liberty and the NY cityscape. Going to Staten the best position is at the right side of the boat. Going to Staten Island, is the best way to see the statue because it’s when the boat will pass closer to the statue. Then going back to NY, again go to the right side of the boat, this time to see the other side. Then go on front side of the boat so you can catch the perfect view of the NY cityscape.

simple quick and free ferry to get close to the statue of liberty
You need to be on the right side of the ferry to have the best view

By taking the free ferry to Staten Island, you can lost at the captivating beauty of New York’s coastline along the way. The iconic orange ferry sails right through New York Harbor to see the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan skyline. Snap photos, watch life pass by, and even look out for the Brooklyn Bridge in the distance. The Staten Island Ferry, which available in every 30 minutes from morning to evening, is a great option to the tourists wanting a quick (and cost-free) glimpse of the Statue of Liberty from a distance.
This 20 minutes ride offers stunning views of Lady Liberty, the Manhattan Bridge, the Brooklyn Bridge, lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, New Jersey Skyline. You will be busy viewing stunning scenes on your whole ride both way. Definitely another must do activity in NewYork.

Still the best views of the Statue of Liberty and a wonderful way to take in the Manhattan skyline. When I was a kid a ride cost 5 cents -- now it's free! Plenty of room to move about, with great views from inside & outside, front & back. Coming & going are easy -- just ride over, disembark, and get back on a few minutes later for the return trip.

The ferry ride was really good. The ferry is punctual, clean & spacious & gives a great view of the Statue of Liberty.
Best of all - it’s free. One could climb off & explore the island or disembark & catch the next ferry back.
The roundtrip is probably around an hour in total & well worth it.

Good views of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan. Take the ferry just outside South Ferry subway station.

Amazing way of seeing the Statue of Liberty without paying to see it. It was really quick and easy getting onto the ferry and we had a brilliant view from either side of the boat. On the way to Staten Island sit on the right side of the boat to see the Statue of Liberty. Would absolutely recommend doing this if you don’t want to pay anything to see the statue! You also get a stunning view of Manhattan and all the skyscrapers.

We found this to be a perfect excursion to nowhere on a hot summer day in NYC. The ferry was a lot of fun. The views of Manhattan, NJ, Brooklyn, Statue of Liberty, sailing yachts, etc. were all spectacular. The breezes kept us cool (and if you get hot, the AC is on inside). Grabbed a delicious lunch and refreshing drinks at the River Dock Cafe in the terminal before making the return trip back to the City. And what the heck, the ferry ride is FREE! Just loved it.

The free Staten Island Ferry is super convenient and offers a scenic view of New York Harbor. You can even see the Statue of Liberty 🗽 along the way. A must-do for visitors wanting a quick and enjoyable trip across the water!

We went to Staten Island. The ferry ride is very nice. We passed in front of the Statue of Liberty and were able to take photos from different angles.
There's not much to go around.

Sorry, but what please in NYC is free???
Yeah, the Staten Island Ferry! Incredible but true (o:
So if you want to be close to the Statue of Liberty and don't want to buy an extra ticket for it, just use the Staten Island Ferry.
And there is also a really ingenious view of the southern tip of Manhatten.
Definitely make who wants to have great pictures!

Don't buy tickets! It's always FREE!!! You get a great view of the Statue of Liberty from it. Plenty of photo ops! All FREE! Don't be scammed by "Authorized ticket dealers" on your walk to the ferry terminal. Ignore their lies. Those are tours and the real Staten Island ferry is free. Lots of seating , bathrooms on board. Snacks as well. No tickets required to go to SI. It's always FREE. It runs almost all day/night every half hour/hour. I'm a former New Yorker, my husband grew up on Staten Island. We ride often.

Efficient service and a lovely ferry ride. Sit on the right hand side of the ferry when leaving from Manhattan to view the Statue of Liberty and the left hand side when coming back to Manhattan (note: view is further away).

Enjoy "rooftop dining". The views are spectacular. Ate a wonderful meal with family at "Blvd Bistro" in Harlem and "Brooklyn Chop House" in Times Square after seeing "The Wiz". Great experiences.

Excellent. Quick for free. Sits inside and outsides. Easy to excess and use. You can see Statue of Liberty from the ferry.

From Lower Manhattan you can take this free ferry to Staten Island. Don't be fooled by ticket sellers, you don't need them. The lines seem long but almost everyone can board. Stand on the right on the way out, so you have a view of the Statue of Liberty. There are toilets on board and also food and drinks.

The Staten Island Ferry actually serves to bring the working population to Manhattan and is therefore still free. Of course, every tourist knows this and it is accordingly full! The trip takes a good 25 minutes and you have a fantastic view of the skyline and the Statue of Liberty. Since the frequency is usually every half hour, you can go straight back at States Island.

Not much you can do for free in NYC but this is one of the best. Great view of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. Be warned it is extremely popular and crowded. Also watch out for the scammers outside who say they work for the ferry but are just trying to sell you a tour.

It was a great way to travel around the area. It was a bit unreliable . One boat never arrived so that ment even more people were getting on the next one. Got some really lovely pics of the city.

If you go to New York you can not miss the crossing to staten Island by Ferry at night, where you will see the entire illuminated city of NY (Manhatan), the statue of freedom at night. It is beautiful walk and then tour the bariums of NY. Must-see it is worth hiring this excursion

excellent tour, gained much knowledge, found out information I have not read prior to this trip. Wonderful tour guide

The orange boat takes you to the southern tip of Manhattan at Battery Park where ferries leave for Staten Island (every 20-25 minutes); there is not much to see there but along the way you can enjoy a remarkable view and pass by the Statue of Liberty

The tour is worth it if you have no intention of taking the trip to the Statue of Liberty. The ferry has an external part (right side on the way out and left on the way back) that passes in front of the statue. The tour is free, there is a ferry every 15 minutes and the tour should take around 20 minutes. It's also very beautiful to see Manhattan from afar. The photos of the city are beautiful. With the statue you need zoom or a good camera. But I really enjoyed it. It wasn't crowded when I went and there is an outlet at the exit of the station. It's quite windy, so on cold days it can be bad. A boat was closed, so it was more pleasant.

The best thing about the ferry is that it's free but it also means that it can get very busy in the terminal with everyone trying to get on and rush to the front but there's no need as the ferry is huge with two decks and plenty of space to roam around to get a view of the iconic statue of liberty and manhattan skyline.

When you’re in New York, you’ll more than likely want to see The Statue of Liberty. There are a few different options for you, none of which are free.
BUT! Staten Island Ferry IS! And offers breathtaking views of this beautiful lady! The ferry passes right across the front of her on the way over to Staten Island, and sane back but not quite as close.
It’s so easy to get to. A $3.00 trip on the subway from Times Square gets you to Whitehall Terminal. This in itself is great, shops, places to eat, toilets etc!
There are 4 huge doors to the ferries. They leave about every 20 mins or so. Peak times are before 10 am and after 4.30 pm, avoid these times if you can.
It looks like it will be crowded but it’s deceiving, the actual ferries are ginormous and very spacious, try and go to the upper deck and to the right hand side, by far the best view! The views of Lower Manhattan are also absolutely fantastic.
Once you dock you HAVE to get off the ferry, walk around the terminal and get on another ferry to come back. Unless you want to wander around a bit!
I would say it’s a highlight of a trip to this incredible City! A must do.

This was the perfect way to wind up a hectic few days in NYC. We took the subway to Fulton street early Sunday morning and walked to the ferry terminal via 9/11 memorial. A lovely walk where we picked up some breakfast at 7eleven. The terminal and park were relatively quiet and we boarded with no issue. This is a FREE ferry ride. The views of Manhattan skyline are picture postcard iconic, but the highlight is Statue of Liberty who you pass quite close to and can get some lovely pictures of. The crossing is not too long and there is plenty of seating. We couldn't stop on Staten Island due to time restraints but there does appear to be plenty to do. An hour later and we were back in a much busier ferry terminal. It is a short walk to Bowling Green subway which will take you back uptown.

While the Staten Island Ferry is primarily a transit option....it is actually a fantastic option for cruising the harbor and seeing the sites! A bonus is that there is no cost for the ferry. Certainly, if you have the opportunity to have a place to stand outside, you will be treated to some gorgeous views. This is definitely a great way to see the area. My only "knock" is that during our "voyage", the onboard bathrooms were not open to passengers.

I have always wanted to see the Statue of Liberty from the Staten Island Ferry, and now I have. From what I could glimpse of her, she was lovely, but it was a hellish experience. Hordes of people rushed the ferry at both ends of the trip. Almost all the windows were closed, so there wasn't much of a chance for fresh air for the hundreds of packed together people. So now I've done it, but I definitely wouldn't do it again.

Great views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis island. Punctual ferry. The terminal gets v busy and theres a stampede to get on but the photo opportunities are great.
Beware of the people selling tours outside- the ferry is generally free.

Ideal option to see the Statue of Liberty up close, free. I recommend, when going, staying at the right stern (where you climb) and, when returning, going to the left bow, to the opposite end where you embark on the turn.

A free half hour ferry ride? In New York? With amazing views of the city skyline and the Statue of Liberty? Can’t be true!!! It certainly is people. It’s amazing. Half an hour each way and you get great views of the harbour and the city and the Statue of Liberty and other boats. A must-do.

A great free way to see the Statue of Liberty and New York skyline. The Ferry entrance is near the subway. You have to join a large queue, then you can find seats inside and out with go8d views. It's totally free and a great ex0erienc3

After I have seen the reviews of the company who brings the tourists to Liberty & Ellis islands and I have seen the queue before opening hours I decided to skip it.. although I really wanted to go to the immigration museum. But Staten Island ferry gives you the perfect ride to admire the islands and the Lady, close enough and free of charge. It is a must! Don’t let yourself ripped off do this ferry unless you want to tour the Lady at any costs.

This is one of the best ways to see manhattan and it’s free. Ignore the tour boats. Leave around 4 pm when it’s empty stay at the back of the boat and get the best view of manhattan.
Great service,
Not worth staying at the Mall, it was empty. Just get a ferry back.

For a first time visitor to NYC this is a good experience. It's a free ride, so great! And it gave us our first ever view of the Lady - Statue of Liberty. The ride itself lasts about half hour, one way, and is quite pleasant on the deck. The view of the skyline is also special.

Great way to view the Statue of Liberty.
And it’s for free.
Lots of seats inside. And decks outside to see the statue and make better photos.

This totally free ferry gives you the chance to pass by the Statue of Liberty, beautiful view of the city and Brooklyn Bridge and makes you feel like a real New Yorker from the movies who lives in the suburbs and pre de the ferry to go downtown

Staten Island Ferry is amazing. First of all it’s a free service. The boats are really sizeable and noticeable as they are bright orange.

An excellent way to be on the water and see the Statue of Liberty without spending money. The ferry ride is fun, and especially as we did this on our very first day, it was an initiation to the feel of New York City.
Remember, it's free. What you get for nothing is really good!

Free boat that allows you to see the Statue of Liberty during the crossing. Nice surprise on Staten Island where you can find an outlet with interesting brands like Levis and Guess with very attractive prices.

Don't be tempted by the commercial options that are frighteningly expensive in an already overpriced city. This one is more than adequate.

Took the ferry to see the Statue of Liberty. Lots of other people had the same idea. Overall nice ride and view, but was crowded.

To get to the Island of the States the easiest thing is to take the free ferry that is right next to the terminal. It takes about 20' to go from Downtown Manhattan to the St. George Waterfront District on Staten Island. On the way you can see the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the Lower Manhattan skyline. When you arrive on the Island, the Shopping Center is a few minutes from the terminal. It has some popular brands but is quite empty since it is new. We were especially interested in the Postcards or Monument to the victims of 9/11. 274 Staten Islanders died in this attack, so it was carried out by the water. It is made up of two white marble wings, which represent postcards to loved ones in which the names, dates of birth and place of work of each of the deceased are stored. The center of the Monument points to the WT Center, the site of the Twin Towers. Very nice return at sunset.

We got up early and took the train to see the sunrise and get a view of the Statue of Liberty. When we got off the train we asked a local for advice. They suggested the ferry because it was free, and would give us a good view of the bay. We rode the ferry past the Statue of Liberty to Staten Island and back. The ferry was clean. The staff was friendly enough. We did not feel unsafe doing it. And it didn’t take up a big portion of our day. We did get some awesome pictures.

It's free, it's 24/7, there's not much to complain about. It passes the Statue of Liberty close and slow enough to say you've seen it, so if you're on a budget or don't have enough time for the tour or not that fussed about getting that close than this is a great option.

Staten Island Ferry
Sunday Afternoon
Late October 2023
Manhattan-Staten Island-Manhattan
Family were advised surrounding the Statem Island Ferry by a member of staff at the hotel we were staying at, & it being a free journey. Coming from the UK, it seemed very strange for such a service being offered for free.
On arrival at the ferry terminal there were clean facilities & shops to purchase a drink.
Boarding the ferry was swift and effortless despite there being a gathering of people.
On boarding the ferry there was both internal and external seating allowing for a view out over the horizon.
Needless to say the most popular side is that towards the Statue of Liberty, and it seems a number of people are well aware of the service allowing for a free view, making the trip straight across them then getting straight off to come right back.
The ferries were running every 30 minutes on the Sunday afternoon we sailed, and both vessels were clean and could not see anything to moan about. They offered quick safe transport with an amazing view that I would do again without hesitation.

Boat tour guide was full of information. Very well organized line to get aboard ferry, with grilled food available. Came close to Statue of Liberty and worth it for pictures.

Free ferry to Staten Island which gives great views of the Statue of Liberty. It's busy and crowded but it's a short ride and you should be able to get a seat. When travelling from Lower Manhattan go to the right hand side of the ferry if you want to see the Statute of Liberty, and if travelling from the Staten Island end, then sit/stand on the left side of the ferry to see the Statue of Liberty.

The perfect route between the ferry port to Stated Island for the best panoramic photos of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. The best location is on the third floor of the ferry. As tourists in a city where you need a good budget to enjoy it to the fullest, this type of activity is positive for that budget.

Great ferry to and from Staten Island. It’s super clean.there are loads of seating areas so you won’t be standing.
Journey takes about 10-15 mins so enjoy the views.

One of my favorite things we did in NYC, and we did a LOT! What an amazing deal, free for all, terrific views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, plus the magnificent NYC skyline. When we first arrived at the ferry terminal and I saw a big crowd of people waiting for the ferry, I expected we’d have a long wait. But since the ferry is so large, everyone in the crowd boarded and there was still plenty of space. We headed to the top , outside deck. Windy and exhilarating!

So i wanted to see the Statue of Liberty without necessarily paying for a $50 tour & came across about this free ferry that pass next to the statue of liberty. The ferry runs 24/7 and leaves every 30 minutes so you can just get to the station and wait for the next one. I took the ferry at 5AM & spent sunrise looking at the statue. It was a beautiful experience and best of all --- FREE. Travel time each way is around 30 minutes.

A much enjoyed trip. No ticket needed - just turn up and board. Boarding looks mad with the queues but was easy both ways - plenty of seats available and some fabulous views. A must I feel.

We got the ferry across to Staten Island so we could see the Statue of Liberty and to visit the outlet shopping centre before heading back to Manhattan at sunset.
When we got to the Whitehall ferry terminal it was a bit overwhelming as the crowds to get on were huge but we did not realise how big the ferry was so when we got on it didn’t feel busy at all. We went straight to the outside area on the right hand side so we could see the Statue of Liberty and on our way back we were stood at the front of the ferry outside. It was a bit chilly in the wind but worth it. The sunset and views of lit up
Manhattan were breathtaking. Despite the cold, I couldn’t bring myself to go inside.
We were so pleased we had this experience and even better that it was free

Completely free ferry service that allows you to make a crossing of about 20 minutes that leaves from Whitehall Terminal which is located south of the financial district and arrives at the port of St. George on Staten Island. Then if you want, when you arrive on Staten Island you can immediately take the boat back to Manhattan. During the tour you can enjoy the view of the New York skyline and pass by the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

FREE ferry to Staten Island. 1 hr return trip cruising past the Statue of Liberty with a good opportunity for a photo plus the Manhattan skyline.

We only used the ferry a couple of times on our last NYC trip but it was safe, on time, and easy to use. Not to mention it's free!

The boat ride was very nice, although very crowded. To get closer to the Statue of Liberty was awesome and to see the skyline of New York from the island was amazing! Loved it!!

An interesting, low-cost tour (you use your metrocard) that allows you to see the Statue of Liberty and part of the Manhattan skyline... and if you're in the mood, go shopping at SI

Excellent views of liberty and Ellis islands and the Manhattan skyscrapers. Regular service, I believe, day and night with minimal queuing. And most importantly it’s free! When I came 10+ years ago I paid for the tourist trip to Statue of Liberty. I queued for ages and then found another queue to get the return boat (I didn’t want to actually climb the statue). I later discovered the SI ferry enables you to see all that I wanted to see minus the queues and the cost. And it was much less busy too even at 9am on a weekday

This was a great was to see the statue of liberty for free. Plenty of seats and if course its free. It was clean and staff were friendly

This is a great freebie activity in NYC affording then great views of Manhattan as you ferry out to Staten Island... although plenty of seating would recommend trying to get a spot at the back of the ferry as it departs to get the best views - including The Statue of Liberty.
The ferry is quite frequent, only waited about 5 mins to board and similar on the way back... got off and then just walked around and pretty much got straight back on for the return trip.
At the terminal there are a lot of touts for paid tours across to Liberty Island so beware... if you are just looking for the free ride just head straight on in to the terminal ... easily found at the tip of Manhattan .. and look for the queue.

Having visited New York 17 years ago, I had been inside the Statue of Liberty but didn’t really think all that much of it. I visited again this month but this time with my wife and she of course wanted to see it. This ferry does the job, it runs every 20 or so mins and gets you close enough to the Statue of Liberty as well as fantastic views of the Manhattan skyline…. All for free.

On previous trips to New York, we have got the ferry to Liberty Island and also bypassing the island on the Staten Island Ferry.
This time we opted for the Staten Island Ferry as we hadn't prebooked the Liberty ferry tour.
Tio, when leaving Manhattan, make way for the right hand side of the boat at this gives the best views.
In a city where everything is so expensive, it's a breath of fresh air to see The Statue of Liberty for free.
YOu can't ttay in the ferry to return, you have to disembark into the terminal to get on a different boat to return.

Its free and provides fantastic views of NY and Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island! Leaves every half an hour and runs 24/7 - if time is limited, jump off at the other end and get the the ferry straight back!

When we arrived at the ferry terminal, there were several scammers looking like professionals. They wore vests with 'information & tickets' and walked up to us saying they worked as a New York civil servant.
They said the ferry of 4.30 pm was overbooked and that we could only take the ferry at 6 pm to Staten Island and that we would be away for 3 hours.
As an 'alternative' they proposed the ferry to Ellis Island, and that we could take it within half an hour, and that we would only be away for an hour and a half. The price would be $35 per person.
Luckily we were suspicious and just walked into the terminal. There we heard that the ferry wasn't overbooked and that those guys indeed were scammers.
We heard that many people are trapped by these guys, they seem to be credible at first sight.
So, be aware and don't talk to these guys! Just walk into the terminal where you can take the free ferry! You will have a great look at the statue of Liberty.

Free ferry, does not stop but passes close enough to the Statue of Liberty. We took to take some pictures, really convenient. 30 minutes outward journey, a little waiting and 30 minutes return journey. It is generally used by people living in New Jersey and commuting to work in New York

We wanted to see the Statue of Liberty closely and everywhere they advised us to take the Staten Island Ferry. This was the best decision! It is free, it's big and a really great experience!

Ferry itself was great. Second time I have done it. Was a huge crowd waiting to board the ferry and was all a bit of a rush for the best observation spots. Was same on the way back. Understandably they make everyone get off on arrival and you have to reboard to make the return trip but it would have been nice to stay on board. Photo opportunities of the Statue of Liberty good as well as of course the New York skyline. Warning to visitors unfamiliar with New York is that if you come from the commercial ferry side there are many ticket touts who are rather convincing that the only option you have is a ticket on one of their ferries. Believe a lot of people are caught out not knowing the Staten Island free ferry options. Yes perhaps you don't go right up to and around the island on the free option but in reality you will get almost as good a view as the paid commercial ferry option.

This is the best view of the Statue of Liberty and it's free! If you are staying in Time Square take the subway all the way to the ferry. It was snowing the day we went so our view wasn't as great this year as it has been in the past but still a fun ride.

The best plan to take a photo close to the Statue of Liberty, indeed this ferry is absolutely free for everyone and every day (frequency 1 every 15 minutes Round trip) you should not deprive yourself of it.

Fantastic return trip all for free. We were warned of crowds and pushing and shoving but even though it was a Friday it all went well. Yes it was busy as expected but everyone was happy and nobody was pushed around and once on board there was plenty of space to sit outside (and in) to enjoy your coffee and bagel and watch the views.
Great wee bit of shopping at the other side for an hour or so then hopped back on to get even better views on the return journey. Well worth it and would do it again in a heartbeat when I return.

The Staten Island ferry is a FREE ferry, operating 24 hours a day between New York's financial district of Manhattan and Staten Island. The ferry is large, comfortable, with decks you can walk onto to take iconic photos of the Statue of Liberty. I can not recommend this enough, even if you just take the ferry over and then back again. Try to avoid rush hours (eg between 0800 and 0930 and 1600 and 1800) so as to have plenty of room for taking photos.

The Staten Island Ferry at Whitehall Terminal is a great way to see the Statue of Liberty and beautiful skyline views of Manhattan.
IMPORTANT NOTE: THE FERRY IS FREE! This form of transportation is provided as a free service, paid for by the city taxpayers.
DO NOT BECOME A VICTIM! The only negative to our visit was being confronted by SCAMMERS the moment we got out of our taxi! Men dressed in red uniforms, looking like some kind of park officials, were flashing their “SUPERVISOR” badges at us, insisting we could not go any further without buying a ticket. These Ferry Impersonators were aggressively insisting we needed to pay them, whilst shoving Credit/Debit card machines at us.
When we tried to politely decline their offer of an hour tour of the Statue of Liberty, one man started shouting insults at my mother and stood in my way, preventing us from traveling down a path that led to the FREE terminal.
Fortunately, we were able to cross the street and get away from him, but my mom, daughter and I were all a little shook. I am so glad I read online that it was free or I might have been a victim of this SCAM.
Just returned yesterday from what was otherwise a lovely trip to the Big Apple. Just wanted to make sure I came here to post this WARNING for you, my fellow travelers. Badge or no badge, these guys were bad news! I hope you can avoid them altogether!

Free and best spot to see the Statue of Liberty. Check the timetable as it varies during peak hours and on public holidays. The return journey takes approximately 50 minutes. At peak times it is possible to get off and immediately take the return ferry. The side where you see the statue is the side on the right (going up with the world trade center behind you)

The waiting place to take the ferry is very comfortable and has bathrooms, the Ferries arrive from time to time and it is not allowed to stay in the same one to go and return, you have to get off and wait for the other one.
The view is beautiful, we took it in the afternoon at approximately 4 and there were not many people, I recommend sitting on the second floor on the right side so you can see the Statue of Liberty and the sunset.
It should be noted that this ferry does not drop you off at the Statue of Liberty.

Nice and easy journey between Staten island and Manhattan. Great views of the city and the Statue of Liberty and it's FREE!
We lucked out with our timing as parking on site on a Sunday is also free.
Boarding feels a little chaotic as it's a free for all to get a good spot to take in the views. Quite easy to get split up due to the crowds and bottlenecks so watch out and keep a close eye on your group.

Amazing views of Lower Manhattan and Statute of Liberty.
Round trip takes about an hour. Well worth it.

The Staten Island Ferry is a very good, relaxing way to see the Statue of Liberty if you don't care about going on the property. Best of all it free of charge and available any time of day.

This is a totally free service. So, dont listen to anyone trying to sell you anything. Great way to see the Statue of Liberty and a great view of the Manhattan skyline from the water. Budget for a total of 90 minutes for a round trip including transit time.

It is only a ferry but it has to be one of the best in the world for the views leaving and approaching Manhattan
And it is free, lovely way to spend an hour or 2 in NYC

Ferry is free which is the only benefit. There is no line to wait for the ferry, it is an every man for himself kind of vibe. People rush the doors and run through to get on the boat.

We wanted to see the Statue of Liberty and decided to make our trip on the free Staten Island Ferry.
We reached the Ferry Terminal and we were bombarded by guys trying to steer us away from the ferry to one of the private tours. We were warned that this would likely happen and therefore we knew that we would politely walk past them as we knew where we were going and what we wanted to do but you could tell that they were steering people away from the free ferry.
Once inside the terminal we didn't wait long to board. Although it was a cold, crisp, sunny February day we wanted to view the journey from the outside observation deck and we were not disappointed the views were great, very clear.
You don't get overly close to Lady Liberty but you get to see her from the ferry and view the whole skyline.
We arrived at the other S delivery disembarked and got straight back onto the ferry for the return journey. Again we stood outside while we sailed past the Statue of Liberty and then went inside to warm up.
We loved the journey we understood that we wouldn't get that close but we had made that decision beforehand and so it was perfect for what our plans were

The Staten Island Ferry is excellent! It’s completely free, well organized, and well taken care of. The ride is smooth and offers perfect views of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline. A must-do experience when visiting New York City!

The perfect place to take the ferry and see a part of Manhattan and its surroundings in the best way possible. If you can arrive early, much better.

When I lived in Staten Island, I never really saw this as a tourist attraction, it was just part of everyday life, something I took for granted.
But now, whenever we visit NYC, it’s an absolute must. The views of the Statue of Liberty and downtown Manhattan are incredible. Best of all, it’s completely free and has a really relaxed, laid-back vibe.
If you’re looking for a family-friendly, budget-conscious experience that captures one of New York’s most iconic sights, this is the perfect spot.

Great ferry to jump on if you want to see the stunning views of manhattan and Statue of Liberty. Don’t be out of with the big crowds as once you’re on the boat the boat looks empty. For good views head straight to the outside on the right going over and the fron or left on return. Try and get the return at sun set stunning.

Excellent views of Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty and it’s free! Very busy so get there early.
Free Statue of Liberty view !
