Great Sunset Point

By Bob L |

These cliffs were a very popular spot the weekend we were her for people to watch the sunset. You get both waves crashing into the cliffs plus a very open view of the sunset. May need to park along the street and walk as parking areas pretty small but worth it to just sit on the cliffs and enjoy the views!

a beautiful experience

By Parents of 3 Boyz |

STUNNING VIEWS and exceptional beauty. Lovely spot for photos and to have a picnic. I highly recommend making this part of your vacation.

Beautiful sunset

By WanderingOttersons |

There's a reason that we saw three different parties taking wedding/engagement photos at this place the evening we were there. It's just a spectacular place to see a sunset. The clouds did not completely cooperate so that we could see the sun down onto the horizon but such is nature....it does what it wants. There were lots of people around but there's a pretty large area to hang out so that everyone can still have some space to themselves. A great calm way to end yet another beautiful San Diego day.

Busy!

By Celeste M |

This area was crazy! It took us longer to find parking than the actual sunset. The sunsets in San Diego are so quick and beautiful from wherever you see them that driving and parking all the way here wasn't really that worth it

Beautiful!

By Gail E |

We love this area and try to re-visit every time we travel to San Diego. It's beautiful, the color of the Pacific, the crashing waves.... worth a visit.

One The Few Places In San Diego to Experience the Ocean

By Richard Z |

While San Diego is a coastal city, it is surrounded by the calm waters of the San Diego Bay which does not give you the Pacific Ocean feel many visitors are seeking when they come to California. You either have to go to the western side of Coronado Island or up to La Jolla to see the waves crashing on the shore, that is unless you go to Sunset Cliffs Natural Park at the end of Sunset Cliffs Avenue in San Diego proper. It is a very easy drive with lots of pull off and park view points. Take a lawn chair if you can and a jacket and watch the sunset and waves crashing against the rocky shores. It is a true California experience.

Stop for the sunset

By Verlin C |

At sunset this place is packed!!! I feel sorry for the local residents. The sunsets pass real quick but the stop is worth it.

Peaceful Place to Watch the Sunset

By messyjessie1996 |

This goes down as my new favorite place to ever watch a sunset. Beyond beautiful.

I would recommend getting there about an hour before the sun goes down so you have plenty of time to find a parking spot.

Lovely Area to See Coastline

By LarsieB |

This is a lovely area to walk around and see some beautiful Californian coastline. Be sure to have a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, water and good walking shoes if you want to walk around this area (not simply sit in your car and look out towards the ocean). It's a very exposed area and gets hot, as well the ground is sandy and dusty so having comfortable walking shoes is a good idea unless you don't mind your feet getting a little dirty. This is a great location to take some scenic photographs too.

"Secret" Sea Cave

By PiscoMatt |

The views are amazing from the cliffs. We also found a "secret" sea cave if you make your way down to the beach. If you head about a 1/3 of mile south from the parking lot, you'll find a way down to the beach. Continue heading south along the beach where you will see a cliff sticking out. If you go around this rocky part sticking out you'll find the sea cave. You have to go during low tide. Even then, we had to tread through the water a little (below knees) but not bad at all. Then you will find this awesome sea cave!

Amazing Breathtaking views

By A2411G |

after visiting Old Town we decided to drive to Sunset cliffs on a Sunday evening. we arrived about an hour before sunset and there was alot of people already gathering to watch the sunset. There were a few people down on the beach as well as some surfers.

Natural beauty

By MinibearX |

Wonderful place to stop by. Beautiful scenery and lots of people. Not easy to find a park. Fish man's music was a bit loud when we were there.

sunset galore

By kovarwithak |

Definitely a great spot to end date night! fun place to people watch as everyone is taking photos, some people jump off the cliffs into the water. Parking can be crowded along the street so get there earlier if you want a good parking/ viewing spot.

A regular day

By Vickie Nguyen |

We were going to the cliffs as a group of friends to enjoy a quick pass to catch fresh ocean air couples years ago when not yet so crowded because it’s well-know for local people only.

Beautiful

By Mary Ann D |

Lovely way to spend an evening watching the sun set over San Diego. Bring a supper and something nonalcoholic to drink (alcohol is forbidden but saw plenty of bottles and doesn’t seem like anyone is policing) and lawn chairs if you can OR come early and do back in parking and sit in your hatchback and watch. Bring a jacket as it is quite breezy and chilly in October. You can walk the shoreline and the views are beautiful but come early as parking lots fill up quickly. There will be quite a few folks watching with you!

Breathtaking!

By Nicole V |

This view of the Pacific is not to be missed during your San Diego trip! Whether visiting during the day or at sunset, Sunset Cliffs is really a spectacular natural beauty. Make sure to bring a jacket--it is chilly by the water! Totally worth the drive!

Beautiful views

By hotweatherfan1 |

The views are outstanding. A lot of sea birds to watch and we were able to see whales. Even on a cloudy day, it was worth the drive.

Wow!

By Jeffrey E |

Seeing the sunset here really is amazing! You can sit on a cliff and watch the sunset as the waves crash around you. I went during high tide so it was cool to see the ocean hit the rocks and spray up and over the cliffs. Parking can get rough if your driving.

Great place to soak in the ocean scenes, including surfers and whales

By Steve K |

My first exposure to SCNP was when I lived in San Diego a few years ago. I went surfing there, and when I left the water, a pod of gray whales was cruising offshore! I went back again in March this year; no whales, but some pretty good waves (only to watch this time). It's in the category of "almost a must do" when visiting San Diego.

Relax

By Dexxx |

Perfect spot for a really little hike down to the beach. Remember to wear the proper shoes, you might have to climb up and down about 8 feet to get to the sand but it's worth it. nice quiet beach with not many others around. good place to chill, partake and enjoy the sites of the ocean.

A Worthwhile Walk and View

By HepAdvisor |

The name suits it: a visit near the end of the day gives you a pleasant walk looking over the beach, the surfers, and a killer sunset.Parking is good, but not unlimited. The location permits a pleasant happy hour or dinner conveniently close if you desire. Thanks for noting if this helped you; I hope so.

Worth the tourist vibes

By Beth M |

Don't go near the wildlife! Don't be that guy!
That said... it's a great place to go watch the wildlife swimming, playing and diving into/around the water. I recommend taking the bus, it's an easy ride and you won't deal with parking.

Beautiful View

By Laura L |

A beautiful place to view. You won't be disappointed. We were lucky enough to get a picture of a large rainbow in the sky.

Romantic walk

By Brian B |

We got there about 90 minutes before sunset, spent the afternoon walking the trails, going down to the craggy rocks on the shore, and then topped it off by watching the sun set on the horizon. It was beautiful and a calm, peaceful fun way to spend the afternoon.

Beautiful

By EMM_Dallas |

The cliffs are very close to downtown San Diego and while parking can be a challenge, it is definitely worth it!

Good place to catch a Sunset.

By DayTrip708062 |

Beautiful natural shoreline. Definitely was worth the drive to catch the sunset and for a long walk in the evening..

Breatiful way to end a California day

By c0ffeegeek007 |

Beautiful sunset views . Get there a bit early parking can get filled up . Check for sunset time and be aware skies can be overcast along the beach so plan accordingly . Best views are on clear nights. Enjoy

A breathtaking ocean walk

By Howard B |

We are locals and we never tire of walking on Sunset Cliffs. You get some exercise along the 2 or so mile paths (they're easy) and view the Pacific in all its glory. Lining the inside side of the road you can see some pretty impressive houses as well.

Beautiful

By usnwalker |

Beautiful place to watch the sunset as the name states. Lol. It wasn’t too crowded when we went. You can explore the many different cliffs and there’s some rock formations that make nice seats with backs to lean on :)

Sunset on a cliff...nearly perfect

By Andrea S |

Loved the peaceful views watching surfers, and the sunset. Great place to view! The cliffs with the water crashing upon them were amazing to see!

Beautiful Sunsets!

By bevans130 |

Check what time sunset is an go a half an hour beforehand to get a good spot. The view is something you will not forget!

They're called Sunset Cliffs for a reason!

By kbayles |

My wife and I got to these bluffs overlooking the ocean right at sunset, and the experience is everything it is promised to be. Just stand there or sit there and watch the golden sun dip below the horizon while you listen to the waves lap against the shore. Gorgeous! It was a a great way to start the evening.

Stunning Cliffs !!

By DannyWasserman |

Stunning cliffs are just the beginning to this beautiful spot in San Diego. The rock formations are really cool and they take on different shapes and sizes. The cliffs are steep, be careful. The views below are amazing, and please put this on your bucket list.

Pretty views

By Kbrey |

Free parking and a nice walk on a warm morning. Not quite what I expected and there was no marine life. Lots of birds, friendly walkers and super easy path. Very pretty.

Beautiful Sunsets

By Charles G |

as with most beach areas, parking is an issue, there are off road spots and plenty of parking on the road, but they fill up quickly, especially an hour before sunset.

There are plenty of great places to sit and wait for the sun to set, or even just lose yourself in the crashing waves any time of day. Nature at its best.

Spectacular views...but busy during the sunset hours as expected.

By Jemlnlx |

Spectacular sunsets!!!

Parking can be tough...especially as your approach sunset time.

The limited lots fill up quickly but there is a decent amount of street parking along Sunset Cliffs Blvd. and nearby side streets.

We arrived to the area about 30 minutes before sunset and although the lots were full, we got parking on Sunset Cliffs Blvd. I would expect it may be a little tougher on the weekends or during peak vacation times.

Be sure to give yourself some time to walk along Sunset Cliffs Blvd. as there are multiple cliffs and coves offering a variety of views throughout sunset.

As expected...once th sun has set...traffic to leave the area is a bit rough.

Breathtaking adventure

By steven3ford |

This is a gem. Stunning views at sunset and fun little hikes. There are well groomed paths you can stay on but most people go off of the paths to sit on the edge of the cliffs. There are several stairways down to the beach and you can climb the rocks and navigate some cool coves. The main parking lot was under construction but there is plenty of free street parking and smaller lots as you drive north. I could spend every night here.

Great views of the ocean and sunset !

By Fares A |

An amazing view which you cannot find anywhere, worth the visit at least for a short while.
Great views of the ocean and I highly recommend to go there for watching the sunset ...
So relaxing !

Sunsets!

By leet |

Nice sunset, but is it ever crowded!! Something to do so you can say you did it, but we won’t do it again. And parking is tough if you don’t get there early.

Beautiful and stunning

By 484MeganG |

We went to Sunset Cliffs on a cloudy gloomy, chilly day, however it was still amazing. The flowers were blooming, the surfers were surfing and the views are incredible. We couldn't figure out how the surfers get out there- so we finally saw one guy come out to surf and asked him if we could watch him jump off the cliff. Highly recommend! There are so many areas to go watch the sunsets!

Sunsets!!

By Gloria R |

We came here at the perfect moment to enjoy the most spectacular sunset! The cliffs are pure CA, the sunset is like you read about. Fun experience!

Kinda cool to see the gliders take off.

By Margesmister |

But not much else going on other than a killer view....good place for a picnic lunch as there are lots of tables.

Sunset cliffs

By Anas |

I like the beach , nice place for meditation especially when the sea waves hit the rocks . It gives an imaginary feeling and sense of comfort .

Beautiful

By Bob L |

The view at sundown is nothing short of spectacular. Parking can be an issue but worth the walk. It can get crowded but again it is worth a visit.

Great to cruise or walk along

By doctoyou |

You can walk along as well as cycle/drive by. Its a great place to get a run along but you will be besides some cars and cycles. There are limited placed to get down to the water. The houses on the opposite side of the street are varied and fun to look at.

great sunset view

By Charles W |

get here for sunset, you will enjoy there is usually a lot of cars parked doing the same so get here 30 min early..

Just A Wonderful Natural Oceanfront Area

By Zoom_Gotti |

Under renovation with the upper parking and natural area. But don't let that stop you from enjoying the views from this edge of the continent. Point Loma is one of the best spots in the whole world to watch ocean phenomena. Parking is easy; just keep driving until you find a spot. Either side. Bring binocs if you have. Maybe dolphins or possibly whales will appear. Surfers most definitely. Some trails and one stable stairway lead down to the beach areas. If you're inexperienced at negotiating these type bluff trails, take care and walk with a lower center of gravity. I think a one way jaunt starting at Adair is about 1 1/2 miles.

Excellent Views

By LTCJJFOODIE |

A great time had by all...
Next time, we're going without the family and we're bring a blanket and a bottle of wine.

Absolutely Gorgeous

By Rosa S |

Watched the sun set here our first night in San Diego after a full day of travel. Well worth it. Amazing introduction to the Pacific Ocean and the cliff beaches. Mesmerizing. (Be careful!)

What a view!

By Ama_BP |

We went there to watch the sun set and it was beautiful. The place has stairs that go down into the ocean. Amazing place. Quite windy and cold too, so bring a jacket! I enjoyed watching the surfers go down the stairs and into the water!

Great place to get away

By Sheldon P |

Depending on when you visit it can be quiet, or rather busy. I was lucky to be there at sunset with not a lot of people around me, and enjoy a couple of quiet, peaceful beers with my wife.

Breathtaking view

By C G |

We visited an area where you walk down the stairs and it is amazing. The ocean and the cliffs are so beautiful and it’s just a peaceful place.

Just walked there today w/my daughter

By Joel B |

Great views but stay away from the cliffs! Parking is usually pretty easy. Most of the people you'll pass will say hello. Its a nice walk along the cliffs, but I wouldn't recommend trying to go down to the beach OR to jump off of any of the cliffs into the ocean. Just too dangerous.

Interesting view of WWII on the western coast.

By James S |

Dress accordingly because sometimes it is quite warm but changing from inside to outside or from bay side to ocean side temperatures can change quite rapidly. It was a bit crowded but there was still plenty to see and do. Really gives an insight into the life of a light house keeper and their families as well as the chores that can with being a military outpost and watch center due world tensions.

Great Views

By Anthony W |

You need to check the Cliffs out. If you can make it around sunset. Don't get too close to the edge though. Gorgeous views.

Great Natural Location for a short walk

By 17KAG |

We stopped briefly here for a walk along the sea coast. The rugged cliffs and sea birds made for an interesting walk.

Beautiful

By Jennies_travels |

Beautiful location to watch sunset. Parking is very limited, so I suggest getting there early. There's not a lot to do, just relax and enjoy the view.

One of the best beach views

By Guy B |

Lots of places to stop. Parking was no problem. Tide pools to look around in. Dramatic cliffs. You don’t need a large amount of time to do this. If you can time your visit with sundown...perfect.

My Happy Place

By Sheena Rae D |

This park has natural tide pools, swimming, surfing, hiking, and awe inspiring sunsets. I love it here. I grew up in San Diego and it is one of my favorite places in the city. There are a lot of special "hidden" features about this space. Ask a local to show you the ropes. You'll dive right in to a new adventure.

So Much View!

By William N |

The views were amazing and the paths through the park were well laid out and a comfortable walk. And as always the weather was perfect

wow

By Cindy J |

beautiful views bring a camera for breath taking photos on the day we went there where several para gliders going off the cliffs

Gorgeous sunset views!!!!

By g00glybear |

We loved the views, sooo pretty!! Best advice is to get there early for the sunset. We got there about 45 mins before sunset and it was hard to find a place to park. But this place is worth a visit and it’s free!!

Spectacular

By Jill M |

Beautiful and stunning views. We really enjoyed the drive and wow factor once we arrived. My husband took several photos here. We will be back. Love!

Awesome park and scenery

By Local50 |

This is such a beautiful area to just go to enjoy the beautiful Pacific coastline. There were many surfers out that day, and it was just enjoyable to sit and watch and take in the scenery. Very relaxing. The neighborhoods also exhibit some amazing homes. One of our favorite areas of San Diego.

Breathtaking

By Sahar |

As a sunset addict, i have seen numerous sunsets in the atlantic ocean and the mediterranean sea, but in the pacific ocean and especially in sunset cliffs the sunset was just amazing and breathtaking at a point i couldn't believe it was real.

A not to be missed spot

By TheKidd26 |

Perfect place to spend 30-45 minutes at sunset. The views are massive and it's an exceptional spot for a picnic, endless photos and to meet cool people.

Sunset

By Jeri B |

We happened to be able to watch the sunset along Sunset cliffs. IT was spectacular! Just a word of advice: If you are driving, you may have a difficult time finding a parking space. But it is well worth going to see. Go ahead of sunset so you can go down lower on the cliffs, if the tide is out!

VIEWS

By jjrueschhoff |

Wonderful spot for watching the surfers, take in a sunset or just relax and watch the waves roll in.

Worth a stop!

By brodge |

Find your way to this park to see natural beauty and water views for a mile! The homes surrounding this park are gorgeous as well.

Great pictures to be had.

By Spencer P |

I was a little nervous that it would be too crowded and that access would be hard. However, right at sunset, we arrived and it was such a good time. We took several photos and the lighting was perfect.

Amazing view.

By IMDOCNC |

Great experience. Breathtaking views. Despite the inhospitable weather with cloudy day-- It was well worth it. Bring comfortable shoes that can handle a mild rocky terrain.

Amazing view

By BettySue |

Wonderful place to relax with family and friends with the beautiful scenery .... better come in summer

Beauty

By eagertraveller123 |

Absolutely awesome and a must visit. Beautiful beach and breathtaking scenery with gorgeous sandy cliffs. Totally worth a visit

So pretty.

By Akkapo |

We went on seals along the sunset cliffs and it was such a nice scenic pathway. It was so pretty, I would definitely recommend coming here. Also for sunset it is a lovely spot, very busy at sunset time as lots of people come to watch the sunset here.

A beautiful walk along the water. BUT STAY OFF THE CLIFFS.

By KFM214 |

I recently went for a walk along Sunset Cliffs, a fragile stretch of coastline, where signs are posted every where to UNSTABLE \CLIFFS. Visitors: be aware that chunks of cliff regularly fall into the water taking a person or two with it. I was shocked to see how many visitors ignored the warning signs: we had another death just last week. If you go, you will be rewarded with gorgeous views, strutting pigeons, and a visit to one of San Diego's oldest beach cities. With it, but observe the signage.

Sunset Cliffs

By Dennis M |

Located with the Point Loma college campus. Free parking, but very limited. Beautiful views of the ocean and cliffs. Several walking paths which are dirt so closed toe shoes recommended.

Beautiful Experience

By usnwalker |

Came about two hours before sunset to explore the park a bit. It is absolutely beautiful. The only thing that took away from the experience was the rancid smell of marijuanna being smoked everywhere. But, this is California so what can you expect.

Trashed and destroyed

By Ruth H |

This is a beautiful place destroyed by tourists who leave behind cigarette butts, , used condoms, urine filled water bottles, used diapers, and human feces. It all goes into the ocean and kills the wildlife.

Sunset Drive

By Iliana03p3 |

A beautiful shore drive wwith breath taking views. Plenty of easy parking along the way. I stop and enjoyed the viewed. Definitely worth the stop. It was a nice way to say bye to this beautiful little area in San Diego.

Nice Place for Sunset Views

By Bchgrl9 |

It's very crowded with street parking wherever you find it and you may have to walk a block or two to get to a stable area for safe viewing. There is a steep drop-off so it's not ideal for small kids or the stability challenged, but watching the pounding surf below is ideal for land-locked folks. We had clouds appear to obscure the sunset at the last minute, but my visitors had heard about it and we enjoyed the trip.

I know this is famous for its views, but I prefer Del Mar & Swami's bluffs farther North.

Watching Surfers

By Alexa S |

Lots of surfers there. You can take great sunrise and sunset pictures the view is beautiful. All the locals know how to navigate the cliffs, very dangerous if you don't know how to get down to the beach. Some trails are sketchy because that entire area is eroding. Take caution driving & walking around there.

Anniversary Sunset

By ourgreenbranch |

Nearing the end of a short trip to San Diego for our wedding anniversary, we found out about Sunset Cliffs and knew that it would be the perfect end to our day. The weather was perfect and the tide was low enough to sit at the bottom of the clouds to watch the sun make its daily exit. Probably one of the most romantic things we've ever done.

Exploring untouched nature

By Ildiko |

It was a very relaxing and eye-catching experience. There were clouds so the sunset watxhing was not an option but still it was worth a visit! The smell of ocean, the view and sound of waves around the cliffs was worth every single step. The place is not crowded with cafes, restaurants, etc, so you can enjoy the nature itself.

Great views

By Bamboo708 |

This was a perfect way to spend few hours near the water. The drive was easy and once there the ability to get out and walk around was without difficulty.

Perfect for older kids

By Brittany P |

We went today (Dec 2019) and really enjoyed the views! It’s been rainy so a lot of the ground is pretty slick. I would not recommend for young kids who can’t be carried or kids that run off. For older kids or adults it’s great!

So beautiful, must-see

By ashie b |

Beautiful views. We stayed in an Airbnb a few blocks away and did morning runs along the cliffs. We ended up stopping every 50 feet to take pictures. Parking is limited but there's plenty of side streets to park on that's barely a walk away. Bring your camera!

beautiful place

By Mikey |

such a beautiful place . walk along and explore the sunset cliffs along the san diego coast . great for taking photos and watching the sunset . i recommend visiting here at least once

Views views views

By Sue K |

Rainy or clear days work for visiting this gem. The erosion is taking its toll adding to the dramatic landscape. Pay attention to warning ⚠ signs. Plenty of scenic trails to enjoy.

Best sunset ever

By Giorgio D |

Very busy at sunset, and for a reason. Spectacular views of the sunset and of the cliffs around. Pics tell more than thousand words

Scenic ocean views and dirt trails

By ameliorate_world |

Went here on a Sunday afternoon, it wasn't hard to find parking along the coast. The views are pretty and you can hike along the cliffs with a nice ocean breeze. The trail is very dusty though so be prepared for your shoes to get dirty! You can access the ocean via various trails and stairs down to the water as well. Some of the trails are "under rehabilitation" and the sections further away from the water were less pleasant. Overall I recommend it.

Quiet delight

By Jenny S |

We love to go here! It is quiet and beautiful-it just brings calm to your soul. The views are AWESOME!

Beautiful sunset views

By ald3114 |

We went here for sunset views. Be careful as there are real cliffs. We saw a marriage proposal while we awaited the sunset. Plenty of people there. Parking is free, but challenging. Time it accordingly because of parking. Watch out for cloudy days, as visibility is impaired.

Bautiful sunset views form the Cliffs

By swapna n |

This place is so good for Sunsets, we couldn't go near the water as it was too low from the cliffs, kids enjoyed the view and the open space

Great Sunset!

By OhioArubaLovers |

We watched a stunning view on Christmas Eve of the sunset and the waves pounding the cliffs. It was very crowded, but we were able to park in a lot very close to the cliffs. Recommend this to every visitor staying in San Diego.

Nice spot

By Dan M |

Pretty cool place to visit, great views, lots of birds in the area. Careful close to the water, very slippery!

Breathtaking

By Mihaela T |

Words can describe how beautiful this place is and the amazing view the we were able to see. Extremly clean all over the place.

Very scenic

By TranzorZ1985 |

Great view of the ocean, with the scenic shores. We were there a bit before sunset. Fantastic scene of the sun reflecting off the ocean. Take lots of pictures

Sunset Location

By BuckeyeTripReviewer Hamilton |

This is the place to go to watch the sunset. It was very crowded but worth it. There are several places to sit on benches and on the cliffs.

Great Experience!

By Kary S |

We had an awesome visit to this sight even though we were not able to see it all because of the government shut down was going on during the time we were there. All of the employees were off so the main park was closed but we were able to view the areas that were open to the public. It was awesome to look across the bay overlooking the city and to see all the military bases around the area. A lot of sea animals were observed during our visit here, could only imagine what we could have seen if we could have went to the whole park.

Beautiful place

By Debbie R |

Watched surfers while waitIng for the sunset. Plenty of parking and a lot of places to watch from. Wasn't as clear as I would of liked, must really be amazing on a clear night.

Visually Stimulating

By Tyberias |

VERY unique rock formations here with wave crasing and rock caverns. Pack a lunch with drinks and picnic on the rocks. Watch the sunset from here too. Have your camera at the ready.

great little hike

By Yadira C |

This place has some amazing views. It's a quick hike/walk. It was some challenging terrain if you go off path but really cool, nothing dangerous. The views are amazing though. It wasn't crowded and people kept their distance and wore their masks for the most part.

Beautiful views

By ILTraveler23 |

Beautiful trail along the cliffs, which I imagine is gorgeous at sunset. While we visited during the day, the trail is well maintained and our dog enjoyed exploring here.

Restroom

By Aimee P |

It’s a beautiful place to watch the sunset. But why aren’t there any restroom? It’s a national park.

Amazing Views

By wanderannar |

The name speaks for itself, you have to watch the sunset here at least once when in San Diego. Do make sure that you arrive at least an hour before the sunset so you can find a good spot to do said sunset watching and have enough time to take photos of the cliffs and/or yourselves. Do observe caution when going down to the edges of the cliffs as you can easily lose your footing. Even if you don't go down to the edges, you are still guaranteed to have amazing views though!

Must See in San Diego

By runinCO |

I was here 3 years ago with friends and we went back this summer. The views at sunset are breathtaking and a must see. Be prepared to come a bit before sunset to find a good spot to sit and take pictures.

Right on the Water

By Linda C |

We hiked at Sunset Cliffs and enjoyed the views of the activity on the water. Beautiful setting and easy to get to.

Great place to see the sun set.

By themurrayfamily |

We were staying right on the front so we saw some amazing sun sets over the week we were there. We visited during low season and it still got pretty busy so I imagine in high season it might get a bit unbearable.

Awesome Views!

By Libbie64 |

Our family loves Sunset Cliffs and come here each time we visit San Diego. A lovely spot to bring sub sandwiches and watch the spectacular sunsets - though it can be quite crowded. We also like to come in the middle of the day when there are few people and sit on the rocks watching the waves. Absolutely beautiful and so peaceful.

Day excursion

By Heidi J |

Fun to walk on the rocks to get to places of privacy amidst the shoreline.
Steep staircase to get to the shore yet well worth the climb

What happened?

By meaveg |

My last visit here was 2012 and I couldn't believe the erosion since then. Very eye-opening. Not sure what the houses are going to do if this keeps up.
Dogs are allowed in the morning and evening. Very nice views.
It seems (and I don't remember this from all the other years of being here) this is where a lot of people go to smoke pot. Not once have I been out walking the dogs that I haven't been hit with the smell. No big deal, just a little sad for so early in the am.
People also feed the pigeons so if you're walking your dogs stay away from the poop.

Beautiful view

By jodimaticke |

Great place for a date, to watch the sunset and take in the ocean breeze. We were there when there were probably another 40 people and still had plenty of space to enjoy the view and feel like we were alone.

Such Gorgeous Views

By J Tel |

This place gets crowded at sunset, but it is well worth it to brave the crowds and limited parking. The views are amazing even if it's not sunset. Of course, it is really hard to beat the views of the sunset over the ocean. The daring will go to the edge of the cliffs to find the perfect spot, but you could hang back a bit and still see the beautiful sights. It's kind of amazing to gaze out into the ocean and appreciate its vastness. I like to pick out a plane that is ascending and think about what a long trip those folks have in store for them. Places like this really make you think about the beauty and greatness of our planet.

Unsafe

By Storyteller731332 |

Sorry to say this area has been taken over by loud cars cruising by, loud groups of youths smoking pot and lack of parking because of youth sitting in cars while getting high. It once was a beautiful place to watch the sunset with your family. You may be safer at one of the beaches.

natural area right on sea cliffs!

By paulbusse2007 |

gorgeous views, wonderful open space on seaside cliffs. A few different beaches to walk down to, or just stay on top of the cliffs and explore the gullys.

My favorite

By Sandy F |

Parking can be and issue so go early this is one of my favorite places, the cliffs the waves the view is awesome !

If you bring kids or pets do not let them out of your sight very very dangerous cliffs !
Be careful where you walk and obey the signs !

Perfect Place to watch the sunset

By bullwinkle_j_moose |

Amazing place for a nice walk to watch the sunset and look at beautiful houses. Can get traffic heavy, but still worth it!

What a view!

By Michael B |

We went for sunset but with all the clouds couldn't see the sun very well but it was a beautiful view of the ocean and surfers.

We went here in the late morning, so no sunset for us. Didn’t matter because it was still beautiful. We parked at the southern end, close to where Sunset Blvd ended. We took the steps down to see the tide pools. We had much better luck here spotting wildlife than at Cabrillo. After, we continued to walk south until we found the entrance to Rope Beach (behind a “danger” sign). We have children 6 and 4. The 4 year old had some trouble negotiating the rappelling but we made it to the beach fine. Such beautiful scenery. My kids loved playing on the rocks and getting their feet wet.
This was probably one of the highlights of San Diego. Do not miss this!!

Sunset Cliff - San Diego

By Shardul |

When in San Diego, do not miss this spot! I have visited this place 7 times over 3 years and the sunset looks different in different seasons.

A MUST visit in San Diego!

By Beth K |

My son lives in San Diego and couldn't wait to take me to his favorite spot and it quickly became mine as well. Best views are at low tide when the rocks below become visible, especially when that low tide coincides with sunset.

Climb down the stairs and explore the tide pools and walk along the rocks. Plenty of surfers are here as well, so that is fun to watch as well.

Sunset is magical, but can be a bit crowded. Parking is along the street or in nearby neighborhoods. Everyone seemed to bring their dogs to enjoy the area as well.

Outstanding point of view

By Onthemovesince1985 |

Not so much into tourist attractions but this was a perfect spot to catch an amazing sunset! Not a bad view from any point. Get your cameras ready!!!

Nice landscapes; not much (allowed) to be done

By Hernán |

This is a really beautiful spot in San Diego; very different from the flat and sandy beaches everywhere else. The cliffs are not too high, but there are very different shapes, carved by the wind and waves; with nests for different species.

The only downside is that there seems to be very little to be done except sitting _very close to the road_, and with no chances to go down the sea level either. This was not thought as a natural reserve; you are literally 10 meters from the road, and 20 meters from the houses across. Everywhere you will find signs "do not try to go down". There are relatively safe ways to get down though; and you will see people exploring a bit. But this would greatly improve if instead of forbidding, authorities would prepare some paths; and maybe add signs for interpretation... and hopefully improve the stopping places so you are not so close to the road -- unlikely to happen, as houses came first and the natural park later, I assume.

There's always birds around; seagulls, pelicans and others. If you are bird watcher or free flight pilot (pretending to be a bird, that is), or just curious, try seating anywhere and stay for a while watching them. With the sea breeze during the day, spot the places where birds get lift from the cliffs and how they fly effortless.... It looks like very small area for paragliders, but I am sure someone have already tried it.

Beautiful Sunsets as expected

Sunset cliffs is a beautiful place to catch sunset on a clear day in San Diego. Always fun to bring a picnic and blanket to hang out and have a bite while watching the sun go down.

Excellent views

By Bowmanator22 |

If you’re looking for a place to walk down the coast and take in some great views, here is a great option. There were people surfing, couples walking, and friends just hanging out and enjoying the view.

Beautiful place

By Magdalena P |

Beautiful cliffs. Awesome at sunset :) just see the pictures. A lot of surfers so you can observe them playing with the waves

What's vacation without a picnic on a cliff!

By ibDonnaI |

Mesmerizing views of the sunset while picnicking with a loved one. I prearranged a picnic set up prior to travel with sdpicnicstation on Instagram. The set up was gorgeous and the views were spectacular. Preordered a charcuterie board and brought champagne. It was lovely. The Sunset Cliffs Natural park is the best spot to view the sunset. Only downside, is there are no bathrooms.

Great place to watch the sunset, easy to park here, too. Not really a place to picnic but a wonderful place to take photos from.

We took a Lyft ride just to see the cliffs and it was certainly worth it. We all enjoyed walking along the ocean and listing to the waves. Very relaxing interlude.

Gorgeous view of the ocean and sunset along the PCH. can be kind of dirty at times though with litter and random trash.

Parking is a little difficult, but there is plenty of space to sit down among the cliffs and enjoy the sunset. Worth the drive.

Spectacular sunset view

By regis k |

Have you ever seen movies with a spectacular sunsets on a Clif? Or listen to to songs about California beaches with amazing sunset? Probably these movies or songs were filmed or written about Sunset Clif Natural Park in San Diego, California.

Sunset Clif Epitomizes California beaches and sunset views. This is what California is all about, sunsets and beaches.

Sunset Clif Natural Park is a 3 miles of cliffs stretching south from the Ocean Beach pier to the tip of Point Loma, forming the jagged side of the peninsula that cradles San Diego Harbor. Far below them, waves crash against the rocks, transforming eroded surfaces into rivulets and miniature waterfalls. Beyond the shoreline, the sea wrinkles out to a vast horizon, reflecting the most spectacular sunsets in the county.

We have been coming to San Diego many times but never had a chance to visit this place. Oh Boy! We have been missing out.

The sunset view here are the best in California. No wonder there are so many people just park their cars or SUVs and open their car doors or the hatches to watch the sunset while sipping on a cup of hot coffee. What a life!

The Park also has a walking path although many parts of the walkway have been eroded so be careful walking around here.

The best time to get here to see the sunset during winter time is around 3:30 and walk the whole path. Then get yourself situated at the Clif at Pappy's point. Search on map to get exact location.

To see the open Ceiling Cave, you have to get the the time table of low tide info from the Tide Surf forecast site. You don't want to stuck down there with the high tides. Getting there is easy. You begin by heading to the Sunset Cliffs Blvd in Point Loma. Park between Hill Street and Monaco Street.

We really enjoyed our times here. The sunset views were unforgettable.

Beautiful park

By chrisdente |

Sunset cliffs park is a wonderful place to watch the sun set over the Pacific Ocean. Lots of places to stroll. A little hidden beach as well. Not a far ride from gaslamp or the convention center. Well worth the trip

Beautiful

By Jayne B |

Wonderful place to enjoy the beauty and power of the ocean waves as the crash against the rocks. Easy to park and walk along the cliffs.

Great pictures!

By dukestravels |

Bring your camera and you'll get a great shot with an incredible back drop of the Pacific Ocean. Worth going during the afternoon and then again at dusk for two really different shots.

Amazing Views

By TheLeongOhana |

Located in a residential area it was less crowded over the Thanksgiving holidays. We found parking on a side street and had a short walk back to the cliffs.

The views of the Pacific Ocean were amazing during the day. We could walk all the way to the edge of the cliffs since there were no barriers. We watched a couple surfers as they made their way down and jumped into the ocean to join more riding the waves.

We spent less than half an hour here.

Endless Views

By Todosi |

Sunset Cliffs is my old stomping grounds as I lived a block from the cliffs. Some of the best views of the Pacific Ocean can be appreciated along Sunset Cliffs Blvd. There are car pull-out parking areas to stop anytime, benches along the cliffs to sit and enjoy, dream and feel the ocean breeze. Some of the most beautiful homes can be viewed in the area, and the Best part are the Amazing Sunsets, different every evening and definitely worth the wait until sunset arrives. I highly recommend it and the famous Ocean Beach main street, Newport Ave., is a stone's throw away. Enjoy!

awesome

By krisgils33 |

What a great place to explore. It is the place to enjoy the beautiful and amazing sunsets. You can even just walk along the adjoining street and look at the beautiful homes in the area.

What a view! Picked a great day!

By Beth S |

The guide book said this was a couple mile hike. I did not see any trail markers. The walk was partially in the road if you walk along Sunset Blvd. The view was spectacular! We did walk to some of the cliffs south of Ladero Road and avoided some of the traffic and tourists.

Beautiful views but dirty beach!

By Lorli |

We live in the area and love taking out of town guests here. The view is amazing but like a lot of California beaches it's rather dirty with trash everywhere. Just focus on the ocean and the gorgeous views!

Gorgeous Views ⭐️

By Generals36 |

Gorgeous views at Sunset Cliffs. We were able to find parking easily, but I imagine it could be busy on weekends and around sunset. You can choose the length of your hike to make it fit your family. This stop is definitely worth your time.

Fantastic Sunsets

By JBfromNPNY |

This was a short walk from my mother in laws house on the hill. I visited nightly for spectacular sunsets. It can be crowded and the smell of weed is strong, but no one bothers you and it is a great experience.

Meh

By jv66210 |

There are some good views from the cliffs, but the cliffs themselves are just a plain brown and a little risky due to loose dirt and unstable edges. Compared to the cliffs farther north around Mendocino, they are a little underwhelming.

BEAUTIFUL!

By LoveMyFamily6 |

Went to watch the sunset and left a few minutes too early as we thought it was too cloudy. By the time we got to our car and turned around the sky was ablaze with fabulous oranges, reds and purples. Unbelievably gorgeous! Go early as it is tricky to find a place to park - we ended up in a residential area and hiked to the overlook area.

Google maps Pin wrong location

By dsully10 |

Google maps pins shows that you travel away from ocean on Osprey Street that is Not correct you stay on Sunset Cliffs Blvd to find Sunset Cliff National Park

Great Views

By Tippy M |

We drove back and forth on this section of shoreline. The homes are lovely and the views are incredible, too.

Beautiful views!!!

By john m |

I felt like Louis and Clark the first time I tread in the hills as well as the water. A point of interest I would highly recommend. Thank you for continuing to keep California Beautiful.

Beautiful sunset (parking challenging)

By Luv_ Rachmaninoff_No2 |

We arrived almost two hours before the sunset and barely managed to find a parking spot. It was very windy & cold, even sand occasionally getting into our eyes. It was all worth the hype since the sunset setting is beautiful, on the cliff. Next time, we will wear warmer clothes & bring blankets

Beautiful location!

By Jessica Fisher |

Simple and free spot. Ample parking when we came midday during the school year. Great place to sit and enjoy the view.

Absolutely Beautiful

By andrealara1212 |

A short drive between San Diego and Mission Beach areas. Parking is available along the street and the views are breathtaking. Definitely an area for shared memories and selfies!

Low tide? Let's hope so...
Much to enjoy as you look out over the Pacific. Caves. Sinkhole? People enjoying.

Breathtaking views

By Jason D |

This place will forever have a place in my wife and I’s heart. The views offered from here and almost imagined and only seen in movies. If you are planning to visit San Diego, you must come to this park! Just be aware that it can be extremely windy and I highly suggest wearing warm clothes. Especially if you want to watch the sunset, which is when temperature drops. I will absolutely be returning to this location and highly suggest others see here!

Gorgeous natural park

By mcpandrews |

We went to hike and see the sunset, but the beach was so perfect we just relaxed and watched the surfers for a couple of hours until the sunset! Beautiful spot!

Great place for a walk!

By Pellaz-CA |

What a beautiful and serene view! Watch the surfers, listen to the waves and just hang out! On the way or afterwards, stop in Point Loma or Ocean Beach for a bite to eat. You can also head up to the Cabrillo National Monument - great views, history and don't miss the tide pools at the bottom of the hill!

Absolutely Breathtaking

By Melissa L |

This is a must-see if you are in the San Diego area. The views are mesmerizing. There is parking along the street and you walk a short distance (through the dirt) to the cliffs.

Beautiful and relax place to take Sunset Pictures as well as cliff edge

By TEA ENG PENG |

The wait for the Sunset is totally worth it! If you want an unblock and guaranteed Sunset view, this is the place! You can even take beautiful picture along the cliff before the Sunset. Serene area with friendly people staying around the neighbourhood.

Serene views of the Pacific

By MLB0714 |

After a full days of travel from the east coast, I hopped in my rental and drove here first. I am SO glad I did. I easily found a place to park, and explored. Easy trails gave way to open areas by the cliffs, and stunning views of the Pacific.

Scenic Cliffs and Beach

By MandC0218 |

Amazing rock formation! We just happened to be there at the right time to watch some locals doing cliff diving. Easy street parking when we arrived there after the lunch hour, but can be crowded sometimes. A very nice place to walk, enjoy the ocean view, and sunset. Highly recommended.

Excellent view of cliffs and great photo opp. The edges could be dangerous so watch your footing. Beautiful unobstructed view of ocean and cliffs.

Beautiful place to watch the sun set

By MNPeach |

This spot is quite accessible, though parking is difficult due to it being in a residential neighborhood. The view is completely worth any trouble to get there.

Awesome!

By Mark42139 |

This is an awesome park and area, and has great views especially around sunset. It's very picturesque (like many places in the area) and worth a visit!

The view from the top of the hill is one to see. The surf was up and you could see all the surfers out enjoying a warm january day.

Best Sunset in SD

By Mynor Aragon |

We've been to SD many many times for both work and pleasure but somehow we never made it out to sunset cliffs. Must-see experience.

Beautiful point and sands with amazing sunset view

By lucoh99 |

I was here for a yoga class and this place is amazing.
The view of the ocean is wonderful and the beach we found is quiet and full of energy.
The best surprise is the view of the sunset.

Beautiful views at sunset

By Norjeff2 |

Not your typical park. Scenic and a few paths to walk around. Perfect views of the ocean and surfers. Great place for photos or using a drone.

Tip: give yourself enough time to find street parking. Parking lot is closed for construction.

I wish we went at sunset.

By Rebecca J |

Cool.great walking place. Fun to see the surfers. Would have liked to go at sunset. Easy to get to. Hard to find a spot where I could get photos of the full shoreline.

Perfect name for a Sunset view.

By xeyegirl |

Came here to watch the sunset, and I loved it. The signs say no smoking, but a bunch of people were smoking their weed anyway. I know it's legal and all, but it stinks, and takes away from the experience if you're not one to indulge.

Gorgeous views!

By ktakens |

Absolutely beautiful area with a lot to explore! I recommend adults only as many areas are not safe for children who may wander too close to cliffs. Check the tide before you go as high tides and big waves can make it more challenging to explore some of the areas. I also recommend hiking shoes if you plan to explore and not wear flip flops like i did.

Beautiful natural park with breathtaking views

By Christine P |

You will be mesmerized by the cliffs and the waves crashing. I could have walked the path in every direction and watched the views all day. Great site to watch the sunset over the Pacific ocean. We had no problem with parking. There are plenty of small parking lots along the way. We went around 10am on a weekday. The only downside we had was the smell of pot when you're just trying to take in the fresh ocean air! But welcome to the Ocean Beach area! Can't escape it!

Awesome at Sunset!

By Bella0519 |

Went here to watch the sunset, and was certainly not disappointed. This is probably the most beautiful place in San Diego to watch the sun meet the ocean.

I noticed that even the locals who live nearby come out to watch.

Beautiful place to see the sunset

By Paulo Porto de Melo |

Wonderful and free place to watch nature’s beautiful sunset. There are several spots that provide beautiful pictures.

Over-rated

By teri m |

There are many other places from which to watch the sunset. Sunset Cliffs is over-run. Parking is limited. It's a traffic jam in and out. Drones fly overhead. Loud cars and motorcycles playing boom-box music patrol the streets. Not a very peaceful place to enjoy a sunset.

Beautiful sunset

By Cami H |

The sunset was so beautiful. It was windy when we were there so it was cold. I’d suggest bringing a jacket for when the sun goes down. There was pretty wild flowers just up from the cliffs too. The ocean views are also amazing from here. This would have been better without kids because they tend to get bored waiting for the sun to go down.

A must see for ocean lovers

By ShooterX |

Limited parking and some areas were closed due to dangerous erosion. Otherwise, the cliffs are easily accessible and provide spectacular views of the ocean.

Place under renovation

By Lazypigr |

There's nothing to see here and cliffs are too steep to go down. Not a great view. Hopefully it would be better when they finished the renovation in a year or 2.

Excellent, but too scary for Mom

By someone_actually |

Perpetually worried my teens were going to misstep and plummet into the sea, so that put a damper on my fun. Everyone else loved it. Best sunset photography. Crowded, limited parking. Don't take pets or small children as this place is seriously dangerous throughout and packed with people.

Best place on earth

By Davis592015 |

When you stand at the cliffs and look down at the ocean rolling into and over the rocks, you know nothing ever will match that view.

Great Sunset

By Tien |

A great place to watch the sunset! We parked along the side of the road and walked about 100 feet to the cliffs to watch.

Must Do When Visiting

By MrsBray2218 |

This is absolutely a must when visiting San Diego. Make the time to drive here and watch the sun set over the ocean. The cliffs are awe inspiring alone, but add in the spray of the waves crashing and the colors changing from the sun. You won't forget it.

Cool

By Paintyhands |

This was really pretty and parking was easy to find in the early morning. Of course there's no Sunset then, but it was a trade we were willing to make. It didn't take long so it's a nice quick break

Sunset at Sunset

We rented a fabulous AirBnb located right on the Cliffs. Each morning we were greeted with surfers right off our balcony. In the late afternoon, we would rush to the base of the cliffs to wait for the beauty of sunset

Perfect sunset spot!

By sphoorti |

This is one of the most beautiful places to just soak in the ocean view and catch amazing sunsets. There are multiple spots here, and you can walk from one spot to another. When I went, I happened upon a free silent disco on the cliffs — it was epic.

There's always something for you to watch or enjoy.

Beautiful place to watch the sunset over the cliffs. Parking was difficult. Leaving the area was difficult. Nice place to walk.

Gorgeous

By Eli CC |

My family and I enjoyed the sunset view!! We actually went twice. It was beautiful and relaxing. We were there about an hour before sunset and little after the sunset. I do suggest being there little early as the parking spots do get full really quick.

Amazing sunset

By Floss |

Went an hour before sunset and found free parking easily. We brought a towel and found a spot right away close to where we parked. 10/10 sunset and amazing views. Quick and easy exit too even with lots of people/cars around.

By WI Cheese Girl |

In January not very many people and amazing views. Close to Shelter Island. Plan to spend an hour or two, not a whole-day activity.

Breathtaking View!!

By SunshineMD75 |

From coast to coast, I love the ocean! Sunset Cliffs Blvd is a nice drive down a coastal town up to a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean! The sunset was beautiful, the rocks...waves! Would love to go back and spend some time there! Parking was tight but worth the wait for a spot!

Hike in the city

By Chris S |

There are several areas to this natural area. There are hiking areas up higher above the cliffs, and there is an area with steps down to the water to access tide pools. Really beautiful anytime of day, but go at low tide. Torrey Pines and Cabrillo National Monument are better to me, but Sunset Cliffs is easier access, free, and beautiful on its own.

A stroll among the cliffs

By gussterling |

Excellent place to see a sunset, picturesque cliffs or a casual stroll along the cliffs. The chill in the air made for a memorable evening as well.

Amazing views

By Suzanne R |

The Sunset Cliffs are just magnificent! The views from every turn along the road are spectacular. It was a fairly windy day and the waves were choppy and dramatic. The signage could be better enforced or marked though as we saw several people further down the cliffs by the water - despite the warnings. In fact, the fire engine trucks, paramedics were at the scene because a bystander got too close and presumably fell into the water! :( Despite that incident, it was a beautiful day and we got some incredible photographs of the rugged coastline and skies.

Stay at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park

By Rexpham |

Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is one of San Diego’s most breathtaking coastal spots. The scenery is absolutely stunning—rugged cliffs drop dramatically into turquoise waves, and at golden hour, the ocean glows with warm, fiery hues true to its name. Access is fairly easy, with several parking areas along Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and well-marked walking paths leading to panoramic viewpoints. However, some trails can be uneven and require sturdy shoes, especially near the edge. The area attracts both locals and visitors, so it can get crowded around sunset, but the atmosphere remains peaceful and romantic. For the best experience, arrive an hour before dusk to find parking, enjoy the sea breeze, and watch the sky turn into a masterpiece of color.

Beautiful

By expat5Warsaw |

We stayed in a condo nearby and this place is just stunning. Relatively easy to walk around, but just be careful at dusk because ground is uneven.

Beautiful sunset!

By wennitiong |

There are many people come to this place for sunset viewing. Very romantic!

As tourists, we were not so prepared. But I am sure that if we know about this place earlier, we can pack a picnic mat, blanket and find a good spot to enjoy the sunset view with loved one. :)

Wonderful to watch the sunset

By VegEcoFriendly |

Sunset cliffs is a wonderful place to see the sunset. Parking is tight. These are cliffs so don’t expect a sandy beach. Can spend couple of hours relaxing a and watching the sunset.

Holiday Highlight

By isadabrowska |

Seeing the sunset at Sunset Cliffs was probably the highlight of my holiday. Would defiantly recommend visiting the cliffs to watch the sunset (for the best view, make sure its a clear sky).

The cliffs and its views were amazing, but sunset made for breathtaking views!

Sunset Views

By Tessa |

My friends and I came here after a 2 hour drive to San Diego. The view was absolutely amazing and it was extremely peaceful. It was big enough and long enough that it never got too crowded. It makes for great photos, but it’s best to enjoy it in all of it’s beauty. We spent about an hour and a half here, but it was all so worth it. I’d recommend this to anyone. It was insanely easy to find parking, which is how we knew we’d really like this place. It’s best to get there an hour before the sunsets to find the best parking, though.

Beautiful

By Kimber |

First time to the west coast and first time seeing the Pacific Ocean. Parking is kind of limited so get there a little bit before the sun sets. There's plenty of natural seating to watch the show.

Incredible Views, sunning sunsets

By donna d |

Incredible sunset and beautiful vista views. This experience was at the top of the list for my friends of things we did in San Diego. The view at sunset is gorgeous albeit cold in March 2025. Bring a blanket. Watch kids very closely. Treacherous edges with no barriers. There are safe areas where you can sit. The view of the Pacific and iconic California sunset is not be missed!

Beautiful view! Wish it had been a sunny day.

By Roving634691 |

It was easy to get to the Sunset Cliffs. We took the 101 from Carlsbad and enjoyed the views along the way.

What a beautiful place to take in the natural beauty of the California coast. Even during a May Grey day it was amazing to smell the ocean, listen to the waves and the birds and recharge you spirit. The parking can get tricky but it depends on the time of the day .

Great Place to watch the sunset... Duh ;)

By Mark B |

This shoreline park is among the greatest places to watch the sunset on the west coast, you owe it to yourself to check it out!

Beautiful, but mind the cliff edge warning-they can break!

By HeyitsmeJulie |

Sunset cliffs are for nature lovers for sure. Nature can be beautiful and it can be a place to watch your step and take care.

Beautiful.

By A. M. |

Sunset Cliffs to watch the sun rise or set (aptly named) is an experience I'm sorry to say it took me too long to have in the 8 or so times I've visited San Diego.

Finally, I can say I have and it's something I'll always enjoy doing. Parking is limited but you can usually find some on the street somewhere you just may have to walk a bit.

You can walk the mile or so long trail along the coast or you can simply walk to the cliff's edge for the real money shot and put a blanket out and have a snack or snuggle with a loved one and take in the beauty of the pacific ocean and sunset.

There is a small metal stairway where you can walk down and get a beautiful view of the cliffs with the waves breaking against them.

Sunset views!

Beautiful views of the sunset. Easy to walk area to the cliffs for most. Parking was difficult at sunset but worth finding a spot in the neighborhood nearby. Traffic leaving was slow but worth the visit.

Amazing view, especially at sunset or sunrise. It's stunning when the sun goes down behind the sea. I was lucky enough to see two US Navy helicopters fly by, as there's a military airport right next to it. All in all I would strongly recommend this place If you go to San Diego.

Make a stop here

By dolittledigger |

Make the stop though parking can be hard. We lucked out right off the road during a holiday weekend.
We walked down the walking trail and took the stairs down the cliff area to see tide pools.
Beautiful area to chill out

Uber romantic view during sunset!

By memeh |

I almost wanted to hug my friend when I was there, because it's just so romantic :) it's natural cliff and beautiful sunset, the ocean, what more can you ask for?!

Beautiful Beach

By kristinaquinones |

I have lived in San Diego most of my life and I love Sunset Cliffs. If you want to get away from the normal beach crowd and to be able to have time with your furry friends, come here. There are stairs to the bottom from the top of the cliffs. Be sure to leave at least one hand free in case there's damage to them but they were redone not so many years ago. Also be very aware that the rocks at the bottom of the stair are incredibly slippery. I have surfed there many times and have slipped like I've never been there. Take a lot of water and food if you plan to stay for awhile because once you come back up you generally don't want to go back down. Also there's not any stores close. Beautiful place that shouldn't be missed.

Beautiful View although Very, Very Small

By Darryl G |

Great view but you cannot venture far. Expected more public area than we found there. If you go, plan additional stops or you will not feel it was worth the drive.

A short Uber ride to a view I’ll never forget. Wear comfortable shoes.
Grateful to the state for making it the peoples land. The views are magnificent.

Beautiful sunset views

By Sarah H |

Beautiful! We Ubered from downtown SD just to see the sunset. It was definitely crowded. We still had plenty of space to grab a seat to watch the surfers as the sun was about to set! The views this evening were amazing. It would be nice to bring a blanket and some picnic or charcuterie. We did walk around a bit after the sun set and it did take us a bit to snag an Uber back to the city. But still worth it.

I loved the views in general, but I had a couple issues. One was that we were there around sunset and clouds got in the way (: And the other problem was that parts of it were under construction, and we were on rental bikes and couldn't go as far as we wanted.

This place is so gorgeous! If you are ever close it would be a great idea and stop fir the sunset. The views will not disappoint and you will leave with incredible pics!

Beautiful ocean views

By Sharon R |

My husband and I had our first date here back in 1970, so we always come here with a picnic lunch to watch the surfers, smell the salt air, hear the waves crash, marvel at the sunset, and just relax. Beautiful views and great memories! It gets a little crowded now, but still worth the visit.

I love this place

By Marinamarina D |

If you love the beach, this is the place. Ocean Beach is nearby, so is Point Loma, both interesting places with their own unique vibes. Sunset Cliffs is a relaxing place to take in the ocean and relax.

So beautiful

By ekelleman88 |

Definitely go here! Very picturesque scenery. I even enjoyed seeing the beautiful homes that are located across the street. I went on a Wednesday afternoon and it was not too crowded. I'm not sure how crowded it gets near sunset so it may be a bit hard to find parking. An uber would be a good choice.

Sunset

By Flhsco |

Amazing sunset. It is an easy drive with plenty of great places to take pics. If you are daring rent a lime scooter and zoom around town.

must see

By 993alexy |

after visiting old town, I got 30~40 minutes for dinner.
I decided to stop by sunset cliffs. and it was great choice.
even it was 2~3 hour earlier for sunset time but still beautiful and worth to visit.
lots of teams for wedding photography.
don`t miss here, I highly recommend.

Fantastic place, even better view!

By Jason Huff |

Sunset Cliffs was amazing! We got there just before sunset which gave us enough time to walk around a little bit before the sun went down. There were tons of couples out and lots surfers in the water. My buddy even proposed here so I already had a backstory on the place which was cool. So whether you are looking for a nice stroll at sunset, or you are more adventurous and want a great sunset surf I would definitely recommend coming here.

Great spot!

By TerrapinCT |

Great views! I would be nervous with small children. Some spots are very dangerous. Definitely worth checking out. Just beautiful

Pretty, but not a must see.

By Stephanie C |

This one is a take it or leave it when planning your trip. The views are nice, but there are other places that are easier to walk to/park at than this to get similar views. It was about 80 degrees the day we went, and it was HOT. There is no shade, and less breeze than other places. There wasn't much to see in terms of wildlife and you can't explore the caves because they're fenced off. There's free parking at the top, but expect a climb when you're tired from hiking around the cliffs area!

Beautiful and relaxing

By MzKittyG |

We headed over after a day of meetings at a conference. What a way to unwind. The sun on the water and the waves were perfect.

There are several parking lots- free.

Great Place to Watch Surfers

By Katherine M |

We stopped by Sunset Cliffs because it was a fond memory for my husband who visited years ago. We got to see numerous surfers waxing their boards before setting out to sea. It was a fun time.

The setting is lovely and there is a restroom available.

If you have been on Highway 1 in CA skip it

By rsdighe |

It was a cloudy day so we didn't have a spectacular view as most would but if you have been anywhere on Highway 1 - especially Big Sur and although the California coast - i don't think this place is any bit special. If you are an out of state visitor never seen the California coast this is a good place to visit.

worth it

By medicn8 |

we drove over here to take in the views which are amazing and well worth the trip. its not to far of a drive from downtown SD

A nice place for a walk

By amnews |

I've been there during the day. I suspect the place is a bit overrated even at sunsets, although it is a perfectly fine area for a simple walk.

Must-see location while you are in San Diego!

By Dachshund Dad |

The views are breath-taking. Come to see the sunset if you are in San Diego. Then get dinner at Wonderland or Blue Water nearby in Ocean Beach.

Peaceful

By Sandri |

Amazing location! If you go to see sunset get there at least 25 minutes before! It gets crowded and parking can be difficult. Take a sweater or blanket because it can get windy and cold. Don’t forget to charge ur phone or camera for those amazing pictures you will take.

Great place to see the sunset

By Venture647682 |

My wife and I had no plans for the evening and it was about an hour to sunset when we decided to visit sunset cliffs. Lots of people gathered. The smart ones had a blanket or chair to sit on. Together we all watched a perfect sunset and when the sun went down everyone clapped. It was a fun and beautiful moment.

Sunset Cliffs

By 73giulianag |

Beautiful views- such a great experience that I was not prepared for. However, the experience was unforgettable and something I will never forget

bumper to bumper traffic to and from. Trash on the ground. way too many people

By sam w |

The traffic was horrendous getting to the cliffs and leaving after sunset. I can see why this was listed as number one at one point, but it seems that the masses have caught on, and the shoulder to shoulder line up of people more interested in their selfies than the sunset itself, really ruined the vibe for me. Its weird, I visited about 5-6 years ago and there was probably 1/4 of the people.

a relaxation vacation

By GaryMinnesota |

Been here before (2012) and came back for the outstanding sunset pictures!!! However get there early not much for parking and the streets back up with cars trying to find street parking...

Go here for Sunset

By bergenfamily2013 |

Definitely worth going here to watch the sunset if you are in San Diego! There were not many people when we were there (in August).

Best sunset ever

By rogera21323 |

Stay at the cliff and don't give up, you will be rewarded with the most amazing sunset you can ever dream of, beautiful ocean and sun meeting.

Teen and Young Child

By Chdeia |

This breathtaking place was my favorite of our entire San Diego Trip! I cannot even begin to explain how beautiful it was. I had to take video of the waves crashing into the rock, too, as I knew I would want to listen back on it when the trip was over. This is a definite must-see, plus it’s close to Cabrillo National Monument and the lighthouse.

Breathtaking

By Brenda M |

As a storm rolled in, the sky was wonderfully dark with gorgeous clouds, making the ocean pop with its' gray color. The rocks, the cliffs, the waves...I didn't want to leave.

Sun, Ocean and Whales!

By lifeisanadventureboo |

Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, located within the school campus, is public and a cool place to watch the sun set. Overlooking to coast with cliffs and sea caves, it's a great spot to explore or even see migrating California gray whales.

A Healthy Retreat

By Areyoukidding? |

Only good for a short walk, but a great spot to take in the view and enjoy the outdoors, COVID free.

don´t miss them...

By VeroFlores2016 |

amazing views, good workout ! excellent scenario for pictures.
is a most if you go to san diego, pet friendly as a hint go to the restrooms before arriving. there are no sanitarians available

Get here early!

By jsmooney |

My wife and I went here early during the day. Parking was already a challenge and people were enjoying the fantastic weather. There are many cliffs around this park; if you're just after cliffs, there are other places to enjoy that offer the same view!

Scenic spots outside San Diego

By Kimitaka Sho |

A scenic spot on the outskirts of San Diego. It's not exactly a tourist spot, but it's a great place to drive and watch the sunset. If you go up the winding road between residential areas and university campuses to the top of the hill, you'll see a magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean.

Just gorgeous,,

By Suzanne A |

Beautiful view. Don’t miss this if you are wanting to see some beauty. Bring your camera. So glad we drove back down from Oceanside.

Love the Views

By Dave E |

We really enjoyed spending time here. The views are wonderful! The cliffs and caves were fun! Will come again!

Awesome!

By Dreamy7174 |

First time to visit San Diego in this mild, perfect December weather. We went there early and the place was not crowded. I love how the waves hit the cliff and the fresh smell of saltwater mixed with the sunshine made my body just glowed. All your physical stress just melts away as you trek the long coasts and get the perfect photo shots in every angle. Parking was not a problem. Me and my friends had so much fun.

The name says it all

By daniel20002 |

You can go wrong with a walk and a picnic here at sunset. Parking can be a little difficult so make sure to get there early!

I Live Here. Beware

By Barbara F |

I live here and want to warn visitors to be extra careful around these cliffs. The cliffs are very slippery either by being wet, or dry areas are slippery with gravely unstable ground. People die here. At times, you’ll see kids jumping in the water. It’s sort of a right of passage here. Most know what their doing, but if you are not a strong swimmer, DON’T TRY IT. It’s always nice to have a photo with the ocean behind you, but do not back up to the edge of the cliff. Enjoy the view while experiencing the power of Mother Nature.

Sunset view

By katie p |

We went to sunset cliffs to see the sunset. We checked the time the sun was supposed to start setting as well as the time it would be finished. There was a little traffic getting to the area and finding a place to park was a little harder than we anticipated. People are coming and going during the sunset so u can sneak into a parking spot if you wait. The area was beautiful! The cliffs and the ocean made it a perfect spot to watch the sunset. There were surfers below on the big waves to add to the whole California vibe. This is highly recommended if you have a clear day! My teenagers enjoyed taking photos, the sunset made the views change every minute. All our pictures are so crisp and clear!
So beautiful!

Oh man ... how romantic date place for sunset!!!

By Dean A |

AWESOME scenic views. The trials have a lot of small rocks. I would recommend not to get too close to the edge of the bluffs. It is so wonderful seeing the Pacific hit the rocks!!

Best Sunsets are at Sunset Cliffs!

By Recruiting24_7 |

One of my favorite places in the world. I first discovered Sunset Cliffs in the 90's while in the Navy. I went back this year and fell in love again. My dream is to retire to San Diego and watch sunsets there everyday.

Best Sunsets ever

By JLO |

An absolutely beautiful spot to visit. I advise you go around 6pm just in time to watch the sunset.
Grab a bite to eat to bring or a bottle of wine , sit on the cliffs and relax.

Best sunsets in SD

By Natalie H |

Quintessential San Diego activity! you’ll catch the best sunsets at the cliffs. I brought my pup but made sure to keep him on leash- there is lots of signage warning about unstable cliffs, so be cautious with your furry friends!

Parking wasn’t an issue, however I did stop by on a Monday in November ;)

Wonderful sunset on the cliffs

By AMIeFRA |

Suggested place to see the sunset...gorgeous colors ,cliffs overlooking the sea ,waves of the sea and magic colors of the sky during the sunset :)

Best scenery in San Diego

By Eric A |

Tip: Get bikes when you are there and bike along the ocean view till you get to the Ocean Beach. Absolutely loved it over there. Took over 200 pictures because I couldn't get enough

Wow!

By Carol S |

Definitely worth the time. The parking lot was closed for repair, but we found parking on the street. The view of the sunset was stunning from this viewpoint!

Beautiful

By tricia s |

Beautiful sunset and crowded. I feel bad for people that have houses on that street. Now I'm just saying stuff because TripAdvisor requires more characters in my review.

Must See.

By Knilaoire |

Sunset Cliffs is a must-see destination if you are in San Diego. Often in the early Summer months it can be quite cloudy and hard to catch a sunset, but its worth visiting a few times in order to see the sun setting on a clear evening. Breathtaking.

Such a beautiful place to walk.

By forshara |

Great place to walk and enjoy the sights and sounds of the ocean. The waves rolling in and crashing against the cliffs, the seagulls flying overhead. It is just a gorgeous place of nature. One word of caution, stay away from the edge of the cliffs...they are not stable and it is easy to slip and fall into the ocean.

Amazing! Must See!

By Jillian W |

A beautiful site! If your in San Diego, I highly recommend taking the time to view the sunsets here!

A Must See in SD

By Robert H |

This is a must see in San Diego. I would suggest that you see it in the morning and off course at sunset as well. There several spots to see, so bring your cooler some snacks and enjoy the view

Don't miss this

By WaSunlover |

This was an excellent place to walk getting in your 10,000 steps. This was a weekday so traffic was minimal making and walking on the trails was very pleasant. The ocean views were very relaxing. We walked pretty much to the very end then backtracked.

The best free sunset to be had!

By Melisa K |

The drive away coming down the hills is also tremendous. Parking can be tough so get there 30 minutes early. Beautiful place to watch the end of the day.

Lovely place to walk and enjoy a beautiful sunset!

By forshara |

Sunset Cliffs are found in Ocean Beach. I lived there for a few months and would make the park part of my morning walk. It is so beautiful regardless of the weather...sunny, cloudy, always a beautiful spot to watch the waves. Sunsets on the cliffs is a real treat, as well. It makes you stop and take a breath to enjoy nature's beauty and be thankful for your day/life!

Breathtaking!!

By scrapperkim85 |

This is the most beautiful place I visited while in San Diego. It was a wonderful place to enjoy God’s beautiful masterpiece.

Beautiful but Perilously Dangerous

By drswayd |

We went to visit this place today unexpectedly. These are positively steep, steep and dangerous slopes. They have collapsed in areas, threatening the multi-million dollar homes at ground level. Huge boulders were evidently trucked in to stop or slow the collapsing. However, this does not stop many people and their dogs from perilously climbing vertically up and down to the ocean level. In spite of this it is picturesque for those like me that love photography. There are many sea caves and sea birds. There is even a huge outcrop on which a colony of terns roosts.

Fantastic Coastal Views... if you can snag parking

By roberthhunter |

A must see if you're in San Diego. Incredible cliffline coastal views. The downside... finding a parking space can be a bit of a challenge. There are parking spots that accommodate a few vehicles every hundred feet or so... you really just have to get lucky and hope for a free space as you make your way along the cliffline drive.

Stunning Photographs Year Round

By McClean Photography |

I am a professional landscape photographer and I frequent Sunset Cliffs to find inspiration and beauty. I have visited here at least 50 times and I always find postcard worthy photographs. I would recommend this location for any locals or tourists in the area. You cannot go wrong, even on a not so sunny day. I have attached some of my photographs here.

Awesome

By Chiefyn1 |

This place is either under construction as the parking area is completely closed. You have to find street parking and walk into the park. The walk areas are uneven and could be touted as unsafe. Multiple areas taped off for safety. However, if you can get to the cliffs through unsteady paths then you are in for a treat!! The signs say that the ground is unstable at the edge but you can stay back plenty far and still get awesome pics! If you bring a lunch then you can indulge in a little piece of heaven. The surf sounds and tide pools are beautiful! Definitely worth a visit!

AMAZING SUNSETS OF COURSE!!

By ANNCOLPATMICH |

This area of San Diego is a great place to stay and explore. The cliffs are amazing to watch the sunsets, explore, and even do yoga! Small town feel in their downtown area. Cute shops, great restaurants, and a really great farmer's market on Wednesdays! Great place to explore and spend time at the beach as well!

#1 Sunset Location in San Diego

By Kelly M |

I would rate this location as the #1 place to be for a Sunset! You’ll want to make sure to arrive early to get parking but more importantly not to miss the beautiful views and sunset!

Amazing - Don't Miss It!

By Shelley H |

The views are stunning, especially at sunset. It's easy to find and free! There was quite a bit of pot smoking going on, so if you aren't used to that obnoxious smell, be prepared. Otherwise, it was well worth the effort.

Nice coastline trail along the road

By Laurie R |

Parking for this trail is easy to find in either the adjacent streets or small lots along the road. The trail is sandy and offers great views of the cliffs. Worth the trip if you are in the area. It is very close to downtown.

Wedding With a View

By Heather F |

My husband and I were married at Sunset Cliffs in April 2022. It is unbeatable for a wedding backdrop!

Great park to explore and take in breathtaking views.

By Philb252 |

Beautiful and easily explored park over the ocean. There are several accesses to the beach requiring some hiking or stairs if you want to get to the water. At sunset, the street level gets somewhat crowded so for a more private view, drive up to the end of Stanford Pl and walk in using the trail at the end of the cul de sac , lay out a blanket and enjoy from far above the crowds.

Easy fun hikes with spectacular hikes

By Shanker B |

We went here after lunch on Xmas day. My wife and I loved the place - our kids were troopers but were tired since we had just flown in from the west coast. the trails are quite easy and the scenery is spectacular - we explored various trails for an hour. We would have hiked longer if our kids were not as tired.

Beautiful vistas of the Pacific Ocean

By Worldtravelerabm |

I visited this place while on vacation in San Diego California based on reading other people’s reviews of this place and I was not disappointed. I went on a mid afternoon on a weekday so finding parking was easy in the parking lots, but by the time I left a couple hours later I could see the parking lots pretty much filled up, so I can see how finding parking here can be difficult if you come closer to sunset time.
The views of the Pacific Ocean are beautiful here and the cliffs are high and treacherous, so be careful when approaching. Be aware that it is very muddy in certain parts and the mud will stick to your shoes and cake around your shoes making it difficult to get it off. I saw lots of people walking and jogging along the path that goes next to these cliffs and many people were walking their dogs out there too. You could see surfers in the water, which was a beautiful shade of blue and fairly clear around the coast. There are some nice houses overlooking this park.
It was a relaxing and enjoyable visit to walk along and explore this area. I highly recommend it to experience a quintessential ambience of Southern California.

WATCH THE SUN SET OVER THE PACIFIC

By chuckawala |

One of the best spots in SD to watch the sunset for certain. Plenty of places to pause and enjoy the scene.

The Sea-nery!

By Adven-jude-rer |

The sight of the sea by the shore is a sure spectacle. Sigh since it`s Sunset Cliffs! An option is to leave your car in any of the designated parking areas. Then take the long stretch of the road above the stony cliff walls by biking or strolling or just plain chilling. Nothing to mar the view of the expanse of waters and waves, sun and wind singly or jointly adding to the tableau, everyone seemingly enjoying the scene. One area is a span of soil, local flora growing unevenly, great for pet-walking or kite-flying or just about anything fitting in an open field. The owners of the low-level houses alongside the boulevard might as well claim this vista as their fortune, especially during the rise and setting of the sun. Postcard-pretty is an apt description but when one embarks on an actual visit to this natural park, it`s a breath-taking experience. The panorama is all free. One more argument that nature-communing is a stress antidote. The side-effect: a feel-good aftermath!

Spectacular Ocean Views

By Sandy C |

This is one thing that everyone can enjoy for free. The views are amazing and the waves crashing were great!
One of our all-time favorite places to see. This is San Diego to us. We absolutely love it. Drive along, parallel park or use one of the lots, drive a little further and stop again. We had small children or we would have walked the whole way along the cliffs. This is a Must See.

Absolutely beautiful sunsets1

By Danielle |

This was our last night in Cali and we made sure we got to Sunset Cliffs! It was pretty crowded when we arrived and we almost missed the sun set, so make sure you get there early!

Great sunsets

By Tricia |

We stayed near this beach and really enjoyed the beautiful eveng sunsets. The overall vibe of the neighborhood was chill and relaxed.

Sunset Cliffs!!

By stevezerbe |

I grew up on these rocks and it was a wonderful experience to, once again, visit and just sit and watch the ocean. To watch the surfers and take in the salt air and sun!

Beautiful place

By Amber G |

Beauty views of the water. Absolutely must visit it when the name suggests: sunset.
Can't beat this view.
