Very nice

By Ron L |

What a nice bridge! Odd thing to write about but I took the time to find my way to downtown Wheeling just to drive over it. I could see it from I-70 and it looked neat! Too many modern bridges are so sterile, this one has some character!

Would Have Like To See It Closer

By Ramona T7 |

Was cool to see this old bridge but was in a rundown neighborhood Only regret is there is nowhere on either side of bridge to pull off so you can look at it closer. Very congested area.

Beautiful but you currently can’t drive over it.

By sarajessx3 |

Beautiful and fun walk over the bridge. Recently a bus drove over it (not allowed) and it raised questions about it’s structural integrity so it is closed to vehicles right now. Not sure if they are opening it back up soon or not.

Beautiful bridge

By Dawn M |

We drove both past the bridge and over the bridge. It looks modern until you see the bases at each end of the span. Amazing to see this kind of historical piece of engineering.

Historic Suspension Bridge in Wheeling, West Virginia

By becknetta |

I used to be scared to walk over this bridge because you could see the the Ohio River thru the steel. But, living on Wheeling Island and going to Wheeling Central in East Wheeling, I walked this bridge many, many times. At times, you would see boats, barges, etc. underneath the bridge when walking home in the sunshine. Check it out, it is an old bridge and still in use today. Just don't drive a Big Rig or a Greyhound Bus over it. We want to keep this old girl with us for a lot longer.

Beautiful historic bridge

By Jennifer_L_R_T |

This lovely landmark is worth seeing. Walk over it during the day, or have a look at night when it is all lite up.

a historic site

By beach_fans801 |

This is something you have to see if you are in the area, It has great history and just is about as cool as it gets if you like that kinda stuff.

History buff

By Mcsusank |

If you love history and old bridges, this is for you. It was built in the 1800's and still remains open to traffic. You can also walk across it, but beware, it does sway depending on the wind and cars traveling across it!

Nice

By Ladyunsilence |

It’s a nice bridge that’s a part of history. It’s definitely more different and unique than most bridges. People should check it out

Scenic view

By Nannee01 |

Very old suspension bridge overlooking Beautiful scenic view of the Ohio river. Can see river for miles

beautiful old suspension bridge

By J8852BTtraceyp |

Beautiful old suspension bridge in downtown that takes you to Wheeling Island. Classy but Scarey at same time

Seriously...this is #2 on the list of things to do in Wheeling.

By Patti A |

I get the history behind this, but honestly, if this is #2 on the list of attractions for Wheeling, perhaps Wheeling should be removed from the list..,,

Historical

By Lieutenaunt |

Read the history of it on the sign on the main street side of the bridge. Travel over it everyday and the Casino is on the other side of the bridge.

Scary

By WorldTraveler |

Unsure why this hasn't been torn down yet, scary to drive across. Antique quality is unique but rattles and creaks to drive across, and limited number of cars allowed at a time is a red flag

Fabulous views below

By NEWYORKUSATraveler |

We’ve decided that we have to come back to Wheeling sooner or later because we made the mistake of booking only two nights at Oglebay Resort. Though we’d arrived on an early Sunday afternoon and were able to checkout Wheeling’s beautiful historic district before check in and got later real close up to the historic suspension bridge on the day of our departure, we deeply regret not having had more time. Here in the charming town of Wheeling, and the truly amazing Oglebay resort, is so much more to do, discover, and experience, no matter what time of year, that we will return someday.

Beautiful Bridge

By Mary M |

This is an amazing old Bridge. It was under construction last September so when we were back this year we were thrilled that we got to travel over it. This bridge is a suspension bridge and very interesting to see.

Amazing for its age

By Bill H |

Such a neat sound driving across a suspension bridge. Also very interesting to walk across it and see the Ohio River through the grating on the bridge. To still have it fully functional to todays traffic demands is amazing since it was built over 150 years ago. Come and check it out. No potholes on this bridge.

Cool!

By Richie |

Just a cool sight. The roadway is that old metal grating that hums loudly as you drive across, making it a bit of a thrill-ride ;-)

old bridge (really Wheeling #1?)

By 無名 |

I was looking at it from Heritage Port today. Of course you see the other old bridge right behind it. It all looks muddled, not really something I would want to take a picture of. I did though. I guess I should have gone on it too. It might be better looking off it than at it.

Love this bridge.

By laura g |

We went for a walk on the Wheeling Heritage Trail on this rainy afternoon. It's a great walk, but the highlight was walking under this suspension bridge that was built in the 1800s. Amazingly, cars and pedestrians still cross the Ohio River on it. What a beauty!

Country's Oldest!!

By Shamu2975 |

While this bridge might not have a big museum to go with it, it's a unique sight. This is the nation's oldest suspension bridge! What a great marvel to have in West Virginia!

Definitely stop by or drive over it.

The Wheeling Suspension Bridge

By mmiracle |

Completed in 1849, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time. Majestic at night.

Historic bridge.

By Robert G |

A historical site that is worth the photo opportunity. It was neat to travel over it and see the architecture and support systems.

Bridge and prison

By Myrna6376 |

The bridge is pretty cool to see and drive across. The prison is very interesting to look at and tours are offered

One time longest suspension bridge in US

By jllm3919 |

We were at Oglebay for the weekend and had to stop at the bridge on our way out of town. This bridge is fascinating. Upon completion, this bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the US. At one time the state of PA either wanted it raised or removed to allow larger river vessels to pass. It is a crazy story and I recommend reading it. It is still in use after 170 years by vehicles and can be walked to get over the Ohio River and to Wheeling Island.

Bridge doesn't cross the river

By Paul S |

Bridge entrance is easy to find on east side of river in downtown Wheeling. Take Main Street (hwy40) south from I-70. Shortly you will encounter the bridge towers and an arrow painted long ago pointing the way to "National Road." Bridge shakes a lot but it is a fairly short, safe, easy drive compared to some other suspension bridges like the Royal Gorge in Colorado which is more than 1,000 feet above the Arkansas River. The weirder part for me is the unnerving tire noise from the steel grates as the road decking is not a nice level slab of pavement. When you cross the bridge you still haven't crossed the river as you are on Wheeling Island. Another bridge took traffic the rest of the way into Ohio but it is now used only by pedestrians. Follow signs to I-70 west to complete your crossing just before rejoining the interstate.

Impressive

By MountainMe47 |

Just neat to drive over such a historic structure and realize the years and years in use. Loved the look with the river for pictures.

The bridge

By indiansfan27 |

it was a fun bridge to go over. It was a little scary but it was fun. Looking down at the water from there was a different experience.

Work

By Michael C |

All i can say is wow and beautiful. This is a part of old America. We have heard and read story but here you can touch it

So historic

By Judy M |

I remember when we could still drive on this bridge. My great-aunt used to tell me stories of seeing the circus come to town and seeing the elephants parading across the bridge. It's a must-see simply to marvel at old time engineering.

Beautiful at night

By GinaMDi |

Very cool bridge you’ll want to check out! It looks just beautiful at night because it is all lit up. No cars allowed, pedestrian traffic only. A little bit scary looking down but a must see if you’re in Wheeling.

Suspension Bridge

By Baskkets |

Easy access to Wheeling Downs. Was able to get around the city without any problems. Was able to get to the casino without any problems and was greeted as we entered the facility.

Good for a walk

By Regina Z |

We walked across the bridge just to do it and to see if we could find a place for dinner. We have heard all the ads about Wheeling Island and when we got to the other side there were no signs or other info for what was on the island. So, we walked back across the bridge. It's not for the faint of heart. You can look right through the road grate and see the river.

Swinging Time

By Bootsie53 |

If you've never been on a suspesion bridge you have to go and try this one out!!!!! You can actually feel the swaying!!!!!!

Save the bridge

By thereasonableman |

Beautiful and historic, should be preserved. I remember when it had a wood plank deck. Too bad is is now closed to vehicles, but if that saves it from damage that is good.

unique

By paul |

The history of the bridge gives enough merit to see, and to my pleasant surprise, the bridge is closed for car traffic, but not pedestrian ! Slow walk across on an empty Sunday morning, led to a number of unique views and angled pictures. -just got back and haven't uploaded pics yet-

Suspension Bridge in Wheeling WV

By ldwat1952 |

Always an awe inspiring site to see a bridge like this one ... and to think, all of those folks who climbed those cables and make our way home a wonderful drive!

Really Neat!! A True Piece of History

By JSOColumbus |

We travel by the bridge regularly on I-70. After reading about it in the AARP magazine, we decided to stop and walk it one beautiful summer afternoon. It was well worth the time. I have a little trouble with heights and the walkway is a metal grate, so you can see the river below you. That took a little adjustment on my part, but worth the effort. The day we were there, a stern-wheeled river boat was pulling away from the shore after visiting a jazz festival at Wheeling. What a special treat.

Be sure to take the time to read the signs that give the amazing history of this pre-Civil War suspension bridge.

Historical bridge

By Ladyunsilence |

It’s a nice historical bridge that needs to be checked out but unfortunately in recent days it’s shut down do to construction I think because of way too many overweight vehicles keeps going on it even though their height beems and signage everywhere

Great historic sight.

By Columbiana Duke |

The suspension bridge was a very interesting engineering piece of history and has a lot of interesting information associated with it.

Historic Bridge

Wow

By SUBODI4R |

The bridge offers beautiful moments for photography and just to enjoy the scene. Best time of the day would be sunrise/sunset though. Brilliant architecture and engineering.

Going back memory lane.

By Sheryl P |

Reminisced about the years gone by when I used this bridge.
It actually gave me the Wheeling Feeling with a big smile.

Wonderful

By grumpy_east_sandwich |

I really enjoyed driving over this bridge, the “back” way into casino. A real throwback into the day. Too bad the exhibit center is in disrepair.

On record as the oldest....

By Charles B |

I believe it holds the record for being the oldest suspension bridge in continuous use in the world.

This is so cool

By Barbara S |

We walked across and then drove across. This is just amazing. Then we walked along the path below near the water. Very nice place.

Cool drive over !

By RockabillyDave |

Located in downtown area worth at least a drive over . Pretty cool design and look. Can also walk over on walking paths. Cool stop while downtown.

Pleasure

By janicemtilley654 |

I like driving across the suspension bridge. I have yet to see it open to river traffic. That i would like to see.

Beautiful historic bridge

By Mark V |

On my way to Oglebay yesterday saw this bridge and drove across it, then took photos of it, in the mid 1800s the longest suspension bridge in the world for 2 years, very beautiful bridge amongst the decay and rust of Wheeling.

Nice Marvel for it's time...

By RoseyJake |

It's a great marvel, but not something unless you're an architect to spend tons and tons of time. It's a bridge that spans the Ohio River with a great sidewalk for people NOT dogs.

Great Piece of Living History

By mlorahga |

As a structural engineer, we were taught the importance and significance of this wonderful historic bridge. What I didn't realize until I visited was that this is still a vital vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle transportation link for the city. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a piece of history still in use for its intended purpose. Unlike modern bridges which carry traffic over and around our cities, this bridge takes you right into the main city street. I recommend you walk across the bridge. See the structure, view the mighty Ohio River through its steel grated deck, and feel the vibrations of the traffic. It is all part of the experience.

Wayyy cool!!!!

By Margie A |

This bridge is awesome! The architect is amazing! If you travel to wheeling island you will cross this bridge.

A must do if not scared of heights

By Keep Life Simple Allan |

This is now a pedestrian bridge only. The bridge has a metal gated bottom with 2 inch holes. My plan was to walk across to Wheeling Island over the Ohio river. I tried to walk across but my dogs would have nothing to do with this bridge. If scared of heights avoid as you can see everything below and it's very high. LOL.

An engineer's dream...

By payan825 |

Glad to see that such magnificent engineering feats are not only preserved, but still in use. This is a beautiful piece of engineering.

Cool bridge

By rayroy |

I'm a fan of Bridges and this was a really cool one. The part was making my wife stare straight down out of the car through the grates. She hates going over bridges. But if u go over this bridge make sure u stop in the middle open your door and stare straight down.

Old Bridge

By MsLucyNMB |

Nothing to see but a very old Bridge. Scary to think of driving across it. I don't know enough about the architecture to really be impressed by the Bridge.

Old historical bridge

By Michael T |

On Rt 40 this is a must either ride/drive across or walk across the bridge. I believe this is the or one of the oldest suspension bridges. Very cool to see and the design of it.

Impressive

By TWB |

The Roebling Suspension Bridge in Cincinnati has this one beat in my opinion, but this is a close second. I walk across the Roebling regularly but couldn't muster up the courage to take more than a couple steps out onto this one. It was very pretty to look at, day and night.

A walk over history.

By Randi L |

The Suspension Bridge is a must do when visiting Wheeling. You can walk across over the bridge, which has great views of the river. A very historic Bridge.

A bit scary, but fun

By NobodyThatMatters |

When you wal on this bridge, you can feel it shake due to the cars going by, but other than that, it is a fine piece of historical architecture that linke Wheeling island to Downtown Wheeling with ease, and a short walk.

Suspensiom Bridge

By Rose R |

When leaving Wheeling Island I always take the Suspension Bridge because the view is wonderful. The Bridge is a great part of History.

Original suspension bridge overlooking the Ohio River

By jimployola |

This bridge is a classic. You can walk or drive on this bridge which overlooks the Ohio River. There are mountains in the back round and you can watch the barges pass by. If you drive, they do have a stop light as they only allow a few cars on the bridge at once. This bridge is parallel to Interstate 70 which also features the Wheeling tunnel built under the mountains. Wheeling is such a friendly laidback town.

I love to drive over this nostalgic piece of history.

By DAVIDFerrell |

This is a very old bridge. I love driving over it both day and at night when it is lighted by a string of light chains across the spans. Gives you a very nostalgic feeling to over the Ohio River on this thing.

A bucket list visit for all bridge fans

By jktmrose |

I recommend the Wheeling Suspension Bridge to all bridge fans in their 50's (like me). I grabbed a cup of coffee and found easy parking within one block of the bridge. I was fascinated with the construction of this bridge. I enjoyed my walk across and back and I hung out in the middle for a bit admiring the views. I could not stop smiling. I just thought it was a really neat thing to do. Unfortunately my pick-up was too heavy to drive over but I would rather walk it anyway. I hope to stop here again someday.

History!

By Melody86 |

We travelled across the bridge on our hotel shuttle. The driver was kind enough to give us a brief history lesson as we crossed.

Historic

By bluescpl |

Sonetning nice to see while in wheeling over 100 years old and still standing the pictures you can take of it are very nice

Very impressive

By kathyhAshland |

First time I have seen or drove on a Suspension Bridge. It was quite interesting to experience this first-hand. I wish the weather was nicer so we could have walked over it.

Beautiful

By twelvesilkroses |

Great to see, especially at night when it is lit. Being born and raised in WV it is a must see. A most beautiful sight at night.

Original E/W Route 40 link.

By Terrence D |

The original Route 40 link of the East to the West, the Wheeling suspension bridge is a very enjoyable walk across the Ohio River. With it's open steel grate decking you can look straight down into the river below !!!! Equally enjoyable is sitting at the Wheeling Amphitheatre on July 4th and watching as fireworks are lit from the bridge and across the entire span to make it look like a giant waterfall.

Closed to vehicles

By Keith B |

Bridge is beautiful! Unfortunately you cannot drive on it at this time, only walk. If they can get it back open to vehicles, it’s a five star attraction.

Before You Drive It, Park Your Car & Walk It

By David W |

Hey Folks,

This bridge is not a modern steel suspension bridge. Completed in 1849, this bridge was already 129 years old when I first crossed it in 1978. Having no prior knowledge of the bridge when I first crossed it, I was perplexed as I viewed the materials used in its construction. As noted earlier, this is not a steel bridge. It was made of cast iron and wrought iron pieces. One can clearly see the wrought iron chain links which suspend the roadway, and it is so obviously different from the modern steel suspension bridges we have seen everywhere else in our lives.

Do yourself a favor and walk across this bridge for a close look at the unique engineering featured in this bridge. See it first hand in this bridge because you will not see it on any other highway or roadway in this country. I have walked across many small suspension bridges built for foot or bicycle traffic, and they are very nice to see and appreciate. All the ones I have seen, however, are simply scaled down versions of modern steel suspension bridges. I have never seen another iron suspension bridge other than this unique Wheeling bridge.

It is also interesting to consider this bridge was originally designed for horse drawn traffic rather than motor traffic. Yep, no cars weighing two tons crossed this bridge in 1849. The original bridge deck was wood, but it has since been replaced with open grate steel decking to gain strength, reduce weight, and allow for better handling of winds. Until the Brooklyn Bridge was built, it was the longest suspension bridge.

Again I stress, find a place to park and walk across the bridge for a really close and personal view and appreciation of the bridge. After you have enjoyed the beauty of the engineering marvel, then by all means get in your car and have fun crossing this great piece of history. Since retiring in 1997, I have found reason to cross this bridge a half dozen times while making trips out west. It is always a pleasure to see it again.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

Historic

By Miyelani |

Get off the interstate and make the time to stop off here. From the island, make the right turn from rt 40 before going on the green bridge. I will admit to sweaty palms while crossing this, but worth it! A historic treasure.

By Michele P |

It is a cool structure but not much to see unless you research ahead of time. Don't really understand the #1 attraction rating.

Fun!

By PattyC |

Ate the breakfast buffet on Saturday morning then did a little gambling. Had a really nice time and will go back.

Different, neat

By flashette2016 |

I wasn't even aware that is what I was on! I thought the bridge seemed to be different. Didn't realize it until I saw the sign after I went over it.

Excellent!

By PraiseOLord |

One of a kind door way to Wheeling! It's right next to Wheeling capitol theater, and its unique design and its history are just so incredible! Best for a walk tour on a warm sunny day.

Awesome

By Tonya P |

We go across this bridge every time we are in the area. I am a bridge lover and on a scale of 1-10 I rate this one an 8. Close to the casino and many other area attractions,

Coolest bridge in Wheeling!!

By Virginia B |

This bridge is by far the most interesting to travel over. When you first enter you are struck by the feeling of oh my God how narrow it seems, then it strikes you there is a wonderful view. But for the best experience park your car and walk over it,it's a great feeling to say the least!!

circus animal crossing

By dbl330 |

The bridge was closed the day we visited. We learned a lot from locals, including this bridge was used as a circus animal crossing. Right at the end of the bridge is a small park dedicated to these animals. A giant elephant stands guard

Beautiful

By P5_Crazy_Train |

What a beautiful bridge! It was on our way as we drove through Wheeling, and we were excited to see it since all the pictures were so beautiful. The day we saw it, it was overcast and gray, with patches of light fog around it, and it looked like a postcard. Sad that we don't make bridges like this anymore! I hope WV can preserve this so that future generations can enjoy its beauty and craftsmanship for decades to come.

A little surreal

By Glenn K |

Riding over on my pick up truck and saw the sign telling me to stay back a certain amount of feet from the next car make you realize how unique this bridge is. Can't wait to go back on my bike.

Not much to see

By titaniumtodd |

If you love suspension bridges that's great. There is an old warehouse converted into shops and a fish restaurant , Besides that it's just an older town trying to survive

historic structure

By Bob D |

Walk, drive(cars only) over one of the most historic bridges in US. Built in 1849 and still in use. The gateway to the West before St Louis. Longest suspension bridge in the world at the time.

one of a kind old bridge

By chruss |

It is worth the ride just to drive on this unusual bridge in the heart of wheeling. It is right off the main street in downtown. It is also nice to look at from a distance.

What a treat!

By JMartin |

The Route 40 Suspension Bridge across the Ohio River in Wheeling is truly an example of engineering and architecture at their most optimistic.

Former World’s Largest Suspension Bridge. Suggest parking and walking out onto bridge.

By MaxwellWade |

Historical site that is worth some time when in the area. Drive over the bridge from Wheeling downtown side and turn right after crossing. Able to park to the side of the base for a great view of the bridge.

Walk out onto the bridge to get a thrill looking down through the metal grate (no pavement) about 100 feet above the river.

It's a Bridge

By Jim W |

Stopped by to get some photos.

There's really not a good place to park, we ended up going over to the island and stopping really quick behind an apartment complex of some sort.

The kids loved it

By 13Christine |

We traveled the bridge to see where my husbands mother lived on Wheeling Island. Safe, well built bridge. Traffic lights limit amount of traffic on the bridge.

Neat to see - Not necessary to stop

By VickiM74 |

It was neat to see and cross the bridge knowing it's history, but it doesn't require a stop to get out and read or tour anything.

We Inspiring

By Bubs739 |

Looks like a mini-Brooklyn bridge.....(in fact, may be the same architect although I'm not sure about that) Have to stop and see it every time we pass through...a really important landmark.

Historic Bridge

By mwatboos |

The Wheeling Suspension Bridge is a lovely site--there isn't much in the way of historical information located on the site, but it was an important link in our national history. The construction connected what was at one time the wild, wild west, Ohio. According to lure, at one time the bridge collapsed, Pittsburgh objected to the rebuilding, because the deck of the bridge was too low for convenient steam traffic. The objection was overruled and there are plates of steam ships with hinged smoke stacks to accommodate crossing under the bridge. The ends of the bridge cables are secured about 4 blocks away, under the street. There are also cables secured deep in the bowels of the old Capitol Theatre. Pretty cool, even for me, a local.

The view from the Wheeling rails-to-trails bike path is a good one. On the "town" end of the bridge there is also a dive bar--The Bridge Bar, that serves some good eats.

Iconic bridge

By Nizoral11 |

We drove over this bridge to get to wheeling island. It is neat to drive over such a old bridge. Bridge looked up kept. Just a blast from the past on this old bridge.

Gateway. Island access

By MargaRita P |

If you're in Wheeling, driving across the suspension bridge is a must for its historical purpose! The bridge connects downtown Wheeling to Wheeling Island.

Historic Bridge across the Ohio River.

By burrdjd |

The bridge is a National Historic Landmark and upon its opening in 1849 was considered one of the first suspension bridges across the Ohio. It has beautiful lines of cable and connects downtown Wheeling with Wheeling Island which has many interesting Victorian Houses. I only regret not being there to photograph at night with its display lighting.

Artistic

By pamelarH7591WC |

Very enchanting, very other worldly. Enjoyed the artistic value and the architectural value. Very Gothic.

While visiting Oglebay Resort, we spent a day in Wheeling WV and admired the beautiful suspension bridge there. We couldn't resist driving over it - it's pretty cool!

Truly Majestic!

By BonnieNimmo |

This majestic bridge spans the river in a regal manner. The views are simply stunning! Locals tell us that the bridge closed after 18-wheelers crosses it (and they weigh too much) and after it happened several times the bridge was closed to the public.

Cool

By phred209 |

This is a very cool old bridge. There is local history and information about the bridge here. You can still drive across the bridge as well as drive next to it on the new bridge.

Wonderful a piece of History.

By MacinTex |

I love walking across the old Suspension Bridge and looking down through the grates into the water. It's a truly unique experience.

have to see this!

By KathrynP979 |

There is an excellent display regarding this bridge from the 1800's in the Oglebay Mansion that is necessary to really appreciate its importance in its day.

Kid's Favorite

By Courtney P |

We drive back and forth several times on this bridge just for my kids....they love going on this bridge as well as through the tunnel every year when we visit Oglebay at Christmas!

By Gl64 |

I didn't realize this bridge is the oldest in Merica until recently. I drove over her in a 3/4 ton Duramax and she faired just fine. A real eye catcher in a strangely picturesque town.

Great free activity

By Teresa B |

The Suspension Bridge over the Ohio River was an easy walk. It was under renovation so you could only walk on one side of the bridge but you can get some awesome pictures.

Beautiful view!

By partygirl602 |

Gorgeous view of the Ohio River. Neat to drive across!! Kinda creepy on a windy day! Pretty neat nontheless.

Historic Bridge

By beththorn2n |

We go out of our way to cross to the Island over this bridge. Look up the history on this great bridge ... and Wheeling in general.

Historic !!

By Duke from Kent, OH |

This is truly a historic and iconic bridge over the east channel of the Ohio River from downtown Wheeling to Wheeling Island. Built in the mid 1800s. Unfortunately as of the spring of 2021, it was closed because of structural damage caused by a vehicle. Hope it reopens. It is fun to drive across.

Old Suspension Bridge across Ohio River

By Ted-Christy |

If your going to visit the casino on the island chances are you will drive across this piece of american history.
The Bridge spans the main channel of the Ohio River at Wheeling, West Virginia. It was the largest suspension bridge in the world from 1849 until 1851.
On May 17, 1854 a strong windstorm destroyed the deck of the bridge and was re-built in 1859.
The bridge spans a distance of 1,010 feet across the Ohio River and is the oldest vehicular suspension bridge in the United States still in use and is listed as both a National Historic Landmark and Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
Note for the traveler: The bridge was designed prior to the advent of the automobile. At the time of construction, a horse and buggy was the heaviest live load that would be expected. Currently, the bridge has a (per vehicle) weight limit of 4,000 lb making it unsuitable for trucks, buses, or other heavy vehicles.

Traffic is advised to keep at least 50 feet between vehicles. Additionally, traffic lights at both ends only allow a certain number of cars onto the bridge at one time.

Happy crossings...

Beautiful bridge - worth the visit!

By JoeBrewerIndiana |

An older gentlemen in my church told me about this bridge (less than a year ago) and as I was passing through Wheeling, WV I stopped to view it. It's an amazing bridge. It's so well built and appears to be in good shape. Hopefully it will remain in service for future generations!

Walk across History

By Klynn47 |

A must do if you are in the Wheeling area. Drive or walk (don't look down!)
You are able to get a nice view of the river.

Interesting historic bridge

By Barb6789 |

We took this to Wheeling Island from Oglebay Resort so we would not have to get on the interstate for a short distance. Interesting since it is old.

Great to see this Bridge

By Gayle E |

At one time it was the longest suspension bridge in the US. It is an engineering are looking for it’s day. It is under repair so closed except for pedestrians at this time.

Very impressive engineering

By BetseyBabe |

Initially, this was somewhat unassuming but, as you get closer and drive over it, it's a marvel! It's amazing to see the huge cables holding up the bridge and following them along to see where they are anchored.

Worth seeing

By Mary B |

We stayed overnight in wheeling on a road trip. Went to see the bridge at night when it was lit up and drove across it again in the morning. Worth seeing...especially if you are fascinated by bridges, engineering, etc. You can truly see it better during the day.

Very Cool, A Great Piece Of History

By coachee1313 |

When in Wheeling, it is really worthwhile to stop off, check out and walk over the Suspension Bridge. Anyone interested in Engineering or US history will find this worthwhile.

Very cool

By lorisZ7207HS |

We did have someone explaining the bridge..so it pretty impressive to understand what we were looking at.

Love the bridge

By Angela A |

Wonderful old bridge from the 1800s. Not recommended for motorcycle crossings, however. You can see through to the water and the surface is hard on bike tires.

A beautiful bridge in a gorgeous setting. The only way this could be more stunning is if the supports could be lighted in the evenings.

Nostalgia - Inviting one into the water.

By Jmayapple |

My first advice if you do go on the Suspension Bridge - do not look down for long periods of time. You will experience a sense of dizziness for a period of time if you do. Depth perception- you aren't used to the depth and the inviting waters. The way the bridge is designed is awesome - much detail in the work of this bridge. I would not suggest taking small children across it for the simple fact - if they get dizzy that means you are going to carry them back. My sister and I went across it - had to turn back "too cold" and in April . We actually enjoyed the sound of the water and the birds. Very peaceful on the bridge. I would suggest seeing it if you are every in that part of Wheeling - just to say you got to see the Suspension Bridge. Walk across it- gives a great piece of Nostalgia to talk to your friends- lots of history in Wheeling - it is always nice to learn about other cities and towns so Yes definitely make this part of your visit to Wheeling.

Bridge

We drove to the bridge and did cross over. It is worth seeing. We also went to the park area to view the bridge and take photos. It's a relaxing side trip. We enjoyed it.

Grand Old Bridge

By RebeccaS14176 |

it looks scary, but it's a classic. Still free to cross, unlike many other vintage Ohio River bridges. You can take some cool photos of it from different vantage points on the roads that parallel the river on both sides.

Marvel of the country

By KJL0823 |

Amazing to see this old suspension bridge. We parked and walked across, then drove across. Very interesting find.

Very unique bridge!

By Steve S |

Very old suspension bridge. Nice view of the river. You can walk this bridge, but only one car can cross it at a time.

Fun

By Judy S |

This bridge is the oldest still used suspension bridge and it appears to be kept in great shape. It was fun to drive across and take pictures of.

Suspension Bridge

By bethryan20 |

The bridge is really cool. Old, scary, and amazing. I drove across it to get off of Wheeling Island, which is full of amazing Victorian houses.

Wheeling Suspension Bridge

By Gary T |

The bridge is amazing. It shows how Americans could build such a wonder in the 1840's. There are plenty of parking spaces on the other side of the bridge (Wheeling Island) and you can take pictures of the bridge having the City of Wheeling in the background.

Cool old old bridge

By butlerak |

History of very old Suspension Bridge. Has been repaired many times. Is fun to walk over, Can see the water through the grating

Really gorgeous

By Fortheloveofdining |

We loved seeing this bridge; it's a beautiful landmark. We enjoyed going to the nearby summer festivals or just walking along the river path and up to the bridge. My seven year old thought it was great to walk over the river on the bridge. It was a little nerve-racking to me because there was a lot of traffic when we walked over. We got some really great pictures and thought it was worth the trip.

Curious early suspension bridge

By Torrenn |

This is a pretty bridge right on 10 st from downtown connected to Wheeling island. Fun to drive over and a bit of a marvel of early suspension bridges. There is a plaque on the city side with more info on the bridge.

You can drive over the bridge in smaller vehicles or walk over. You do feel the movement and you can see through the grating to the river below.

Very beautiful bridge

By Tony T |

On one side you have the beginning of downtown Wheeling and The Island on the other (not a nice neighborhood) where the Wheeling Island Casino and the Stadium is located. Great view!

Oldest suspension bridge.

By janek2182016 |

Very historical to see and safe to walk across. This suspension bridge spans across the famous Ohio River. This is very unique to see as not many in the USA

Suspension bridge

By deelettiere |

Great landmark -- makes for a unique ride over the river with a great view and an interesting sound as you travel over the bridge

A treat to see

By Dave B |

It was a treat to be able to walk out onto an "antique" suspension bridge and be able to savor it's classic design. Having no vehicles allowed on the bridge made the experience quiet, calm and worry-free. The view over the Ohio River was enjoyable. Free parking was easy to find and happened to be immediately adjacent to one end of the bridge.

Cool to look at...

By bjones2585 |

...pretty scary to drive across...and I don't get nervous easily. Just wasn't a fan of the driving part, but it was very cool to look at.

Beautiful one of kind bridge

By Yock1238 |

This bridge is a must see when in Wheeling.
Love to walk across this bridge.
One of a few bridges that are held up by cables left in our country.
Do not miss the walk across much better than driving across.

quick walk but interesting history

By Elaine B |

If you are in Wheeling walk over the bridge. Historical markers tell about it. Nice view. Not much else to say.

A Good Picture Place

By Toddamy |

If you can snap a couple of pictures while going across the bridge it is a good view up and down the river.

Pretty neat

By A Spruced Up Life |

Took pictures from the amphitheater and drove across it. It was neat to learn about the National Road. We we to the visitors center for information and used Pokémon Go.

Must see if in Wheeling

By Alison P |

This is on the National Road and is interesting to see. We were able to find a place to park on the street so that we could get out and photograph the bridge.

Worth the visit if in the area!!!

By Peter C |

The day we visited the bridge was a nice warm and sunny day. We walked across the entire bridge from Wheeling-to-Wheeling Island and back which crosses the Ohio River. The bridge is closed to all traffic and the bridge deck is metal slotted, so you don't have to worry about vehicles. We parked on the street before the bridge on the Wheeling side, but you can park on either end of the bridge. We found a close by parking spot on the street that said 2-hour free parking. Make sure you read the bridge historical marker on the Wheeling side of the bridge to gain an appreciation of the history of this amazing bridge. It is well worth the visit if in the area or you are into bridges!!!

Loved seeing this Bridge

By gayleruth |

It give a has that look from times past. What a marvel that it still stands and is in use. Craftsman's ship from a time long gone. A must see if you're in the area.

Spectacular!

By Thomas B |

I grew up using this bridge to go between Wheeling WVA and Wheeling Island by car, hearing the clickity clack of the bridge as we drove over it. Being a stone bridge, they have completely upgraded its safety and restored it to its originality. It is not open to auto traffic as that shifted to the Fort Henry Bridge and now the Stone Bridge is for walking traffic only..a must see

Amazing historic Suspension Bridge

By Sajendo |

This bridge is a beautiful landmark. Amazing to think this was built in the 1800's and continues to be used today. It represents a great historical time in the US expansion to the west. Definitely worth seeing and driving or walking over.

Cool bridge.

By Damon C |

We drove across the bridge and I took some pictures. It was raining, which dampened the experience a bit - pun intended. Neat piece of history.

One must marvel

By SavantIII_11 |

Suspension Bridge is an attraction that we often observe as we drive near/through Wheeling.

Wheeling Suspension Bridge was the largest suspension bridge in the world from 1849 until 1851. WheelingSuspension Bridge became the first bridge to span a major river west of the Appalachian mountains.

Today travels drive I -70 or I -470.

World's Greatest Bridge.

By musicdinosaur |

In Wheeling, yes Wheeling. This is such an iconic masterpiece you gotta see it in person to believe it. A great rembrance of Wheeling's past.

Old-Time Architecture

By DiscountKing |

The steel-grate suspension bridge provided a different experience than a normal bridge to drive over. In addition to the steel grate, you could feel the bridge swaying slightly as you were driving over it. If you are interested in various architectural designs, you should check this bridge out by driving over it and checking it out from below.

The bridge actually rises as you head toward Wheeling Island as the Ohio River is frequently used to transports good up and down the river including large coal barges. The river and island used to flood prior to the building of locks up-stream to protect the area.

Must see in Wheeling!!

By rduinc |

Definitely make an effort to see this. Wheeling is not very big so it's pretty easy to get to. We drove across the bridge to the island, and then walked back across the bridge. The architecture is amazing. My favorite thing we did in Wheeling.

It's a old bridge

By Michael W |

You have to be into this kind of thing to truly appreciate it's beauty. But worth a look even if you're just passing through.

Interesting

By Stephen D |

Great historic bridge. Nothing extra special around it though. Town of Wheeling is interesting, however didn't enjoy the casino

Make the stop

By BuRickJr44 |

It was worth the time to stop and view the bridge. After seeing it first hand you can see its history although driving across it can be an eye opener.

Scary walk

By MountaineerLu |

A very historic bridge. Fun to walk accross and take pictures. Also possible to drive. Kind of scary if you are afraid of heights as you can see the river below as you walk. Definitely worth a detour if you are in Wheeling.

Beautiful

By Dave |

It’s a beautiful bridge with a beautiful view but it’s not much of a tourist destination. Just drive across.

Oldest Suspension Bridge

By Dana S |

Because the builders of this bridge were trying to stop river traffic headed to Pittsburgh and keep traffic in Wheeling a new invention was made... collapsible smoke stakes

Very neat attraction.

By thorpes96 |

It is a unique bridge and very neat to drive across. Makes it nice they are preserving the history of Wheeling.

Historic Bridge

By Robert M |

This is a Historic bridge in a historic city. The city of Wheeling, WV. is 53 miles down river from Pittsburg, PA. In the early pioneer days it was the jumping off point to the west but was plagued fighting several tribes of American indians (for good reason they wanted to keep their land). The story of early Wheeling as an outpost is well documented by several books telling the story of Ebenezer Zane and Betty Zane who carried powder to the fort while under fire by the Indians. The bridge was built in 1847 and was the only bridge spanning the Ohio river for many years and thus attracted many pioneers on their way west.Cars can drive across if they stay at least 50 feet apart. Wheeling was an important industrial city until the decline of the great steel mills, glass factories, nail manufacturers and associated industries in the 1950's. At this time it is mainly a tourist attraction with many beautiful places to visit.

History, but take care

By TheBear2002 |

Enjoyed a quick walk across the bridge from Wheeling over to Wheeling Island. Bridge is metal, both for driving and walking. Walkways on both sides was rather narrow and also was metal. Not a place for heels, for sure. Interesting to study the history of the bridge and the National Highway posted on the Wheeling side.

Wheeling 's rainbow.

By Samuel A |

When it was built it was the longest single span bridge in the world. It connects Wheeling with Wheeling Island. It is rich in history and would not still be there if it had not been declared an official postal route. I leave it up to visitors to read all about its history and enjoy a walk across.

WOW ! Must See

By dkbbaw |

Well, worth the trip breath taking. On the other side be sure to stop in Wheeling Island ... Great food

Awesome view

By Jim P |

Antique bridge, used for decades to cross the river; now closed for upgrading, and a great place to walk along the riverview .

Beautiful piece of history

By Angie G |

This suspension bridge is a beautiful piece of history. Built in 1849 it was the largest suspension bridge from 1849 to 1851.

Walking the suspension bridge

By Paula C |

We walked out halfway across the bridge. Alot of people were using it to get back and forth to both sides of the Ohio river. We went out so we could take pictures of the river and paddleboats there for a Sternwheeler Festival.

Era Gone By

By Lori-Ann H |

The suspension bridge was a fascinating piece of architecture. The city has many Victorian elements not found in America any longer. The Ohio River and this bridge was absolutely breathtaking.

Awesome Bridge

By Barbz1951 |

I grew up in Wheeling, WV and can tell you this is an awesome bridge to walk across. I've walked and driven across many times. I love the sound driving across because the tires going over the steel makes a humming sound. I have never liked bridges but the Suspension Bridge is not so bad for me. There is a lot of history to learn about this area.

Lots of history and time saver!

By Dennis S |

If you stay at the McLure Hotel in downtown Wheeling this bridge is a neat short-cut and timesaver back to the hotel...... trip is a short mile.....and the history is fascinating, Glad to see that the bridge was saved from destruction!

It's a classic

By William P |

I always make a point of using the Suspension Bridge on old Route 40 - at one time it was the longest in the US. And it takes you from dowtown to Big Wheeling Island, or "the Island" as the locals call it, home to the Casino and dog track. Parts of it are pretty sketchy. Walking across it is fun, if the swaying doesn't freak you out. Across the street on the downtown side is a good local watering hole, The Bridge Bar - classic old Wheeling!

It’s a bridge...

By daearz77 |

I don’t know why this is ranked number one in Wheeling with places like Oglebay. It’s a bridge......

Take a walk back into time....

By 1RaiderFan |

We decided to stop here and check out the bridge on our way through Wheeling, West Virginia. You can park right on the street and then walk across. Lots of cool photo opportunities....as well as a lot of shady
locals 😳

By Ellen V |

This historic bridge along the National Road is perfect for photographing or just admiring from many different angles.

A must

By Ana Carmen |

Wheeling is a cute little town. And this is a must. Drive across this historic bridge to see the island. Not much there but a stop at the Casino/racetrack (dogs) is a must.

View it from town

By indyizzi |

If you view the old bridge from the highway bridge, it looks old and crappy.
From the riverfront walk at the park, it's a beautiful backdrop that mercifully obscures the highway bridge.
A local treasure.

What an amazing place to see...

By Shellie M |

So much history in the area & the bridge is the coolest. Especially when there's a weekend event of sorts taking place. Especially fireworks over the water. Watch from the bridge & it's remarkable since the ampitheater sits just mere yards away. No matter if you are on the Island or in town, the "feel" of it's history touches your soul. REMARKABLE & BREATHTAKING

Suspension Bridge

By Skeber629 |

Very Interesting to see one of the first Suspension Bridges Built and to drive across it and see the Architecture in Wheeling is even more Fascinating.

Scary

By Louie |

The signs say “stay 50 ft apart” No one heads. It also say “2 ton weight limit” that’s the average weight of a car?!

Historical Beauty

By David B |

This bridge is a must see in Wheeling West Virginia, one of the oldest and most majestic bridges in America. We enjoyed the view from the bridge which has walking space as well as driving lanes. we were in awe of the way the bridge looked after so many years in existence.

Great photo opportunity

By Mrspinney |

My daughter and I saw this bridge from underneath and above. The bike trail goes right underneath this bridge and there are so many opportunities for great photos. We also visited it around 10 P.M. because we thought it was illuminated every night but found out it isn't lit up. We don't know if it has to be later at night or just for special occasions.
Still worth seeing, no matter if it's day or night time.

I love bridges

By Stacey B |

This bridge is very cool. But, I must say that what was even cooler (if that is an okay word to use) was the memorial wall just over the bridge on Wheeling Island side that showed the height of various floods over the years.

Nice looking old bridge esp for photos

By P H |

We stopped near the bridge for some photos while returning from Ogebay resort. you will surely get some nice photos there.

This bridge is under reconstruction.

By Joe C |

This bridge is under reconstruction. You can't really get near it! Our vehicle navigation wanted to take us over the closed span.

Great old bridge

By Marlin K |

It is a good sight to see and better yet to be able to drive across
can be seen from other bridge but is but is nice to drive over
had been closed for many years only cars can use now

Wheeling Suspension Bridge

By 3MG1949 |

The bridge is an incredible sight to see. Looking at it from the very inviting Bridge Park gives the observer a great view. The park is a nice place to stroll and there are many interesting monuments.

Unique bridge to see in West Virginia

By Tia B |

I love traveling across the Wheeling Suspension bridge every time I go to Wheeling , West Virginia. It is old and unique. It is beautiful to see lit up at night and I hope others stop and see its beauty and uniqueness while visiting the area. It was upgraded a few years back.

Just a great place to relax. If I didn't like it I wouldn't be returning at least once a week.

By Jennilee D |

I have done this once already. It is convenient for me. I feel safe and enjoy the atmosphere, see the dog races and play slots.

awesome

By rebecca d |

I've been wanting to see this beautiful bridge for so long. it sucks it was closed but it was still so pretty. once they fix it, I'm sure she will be in her prime.

By Lori Z |

First times on suspension bridge. Travel it many times in attempt to find casino and track. Grand entrance to island.

pretty but a bit scary to drive over...

By GrammyBonnie |

This is a really pretty bridge and has been repaired and updated over the years. I am told it looks extra pretty when it is lighted at night but we did not see it.

Amazing Drive over the Suspension Bridge

By fetchpa |

This historical bridge is a must do when in the area. The one lane passage crossing takes you across a stretch above a beautiful river with unique sounds and interesting wheel traction!

Beautiful view

By Baylie O |

Short walk out over the river from town. We could walk here from our hotel and it is right by a small park down by the river as well. Beautiful views.

very cool stop

By ekeane22 |

this was fun to walk across during our time in Wheeling. It was the perfect place to take pictures. The bridge even moves as bit while you're on it. What a great piece of history.

An amazing piece of history

By Tiffany T |

Everyday, over the last 2 years, I have gone on breaks from work to sit down at the park and look at this bridge. Its absolutely stunning. At one point it was the largest suspension bridge in the world, connection the east ro the west. Of you come to Wheeling, make sure to stop and see this landmark. The photos I have, on this phone, show the bridge in the background. Gorgeous.

Nice quick stop

By BagelHunter |

Nice bridge and walking along the waterfront is nice too. Hardly anyone around though and I wouldn’t walk around there after dark.

Great Walk Across the Bridge

By MakKnight |

I wanted to see the bridge and had no idea that they still let you walk across the bridge. This was a highlight of my trip to Wheeling. They were doing bridge repair, so the bridge was closed to motor vehicles, but we walked across from Wheeling Island to downtown Wheeling. I enjoyed this immensely - the history of the bridge is so interesting. Glad I got to do this.

Neat bridge

By mxlpilot |

It is an old bridge that is a must see when in Wheeling W.V. Very old suspended cable with a grating deck.

Historic site

By L b |

This is a unique engineering and architectural structure well worth the stop. Historical information posted on the bridge is informative and walk along the bridge is pleasant. Caution: there are weight and height restrictions that must be heeded.

Fun

By Jackie M |

Loved the suspension bridge - everyone should come see it. We always get off the highway so we can come back across and go to Wheeling Island Casino

A must see

By Marybunny66 |

The bridge is amazing! It is closed for driving, but you can walk across for an unparalleled view of the Ohio River. It's a wonderful price of history being kept with repairs and upkeep.

Fun little ride!

By NorthCarolinians |

One of our children is really into bridges and knew that this type of bridge is pretty rare. The kids enjoyed riding over it and got a kick out of the fact that it wasn't a concrete or asphalt floor. Neat little piece of history.

Plan on this when the weather is nice!

By Christine H |

We googled this and it said we were there, when we were on the bridge that runs close to it! It was cool to see, but Google Maps did not take us directly to where you can walk on it. But glad we got a glimpse of it anyhow!

The a step back into the past.

By Charlotte H |

A slice of history in our back yard. Visit to experience a uniquely beautiful bridge. Get out and take a walk across to feel the gentle sway of this vintage structure.

Our West Virginia Landmark

By Ghiatrain |

I'm on a quest my kids to travel to all 50 states. We traveled through WV and needed a stop. I chose this bridge as our photo op Landmark. It's easy to get to off i70 and it was a quick stop.

Landmark bridge

By SharonB231 |

This bridge is a landmark in Wheeling. It is worth a photo opportunity. Can get a nice picture of the bridge from I 70. Coming into Wheeling from Ohio the bridge will be on your right.

On the way to the casino

By cdawg6016 |

So I'm not a bridge freak or anything so I think it's just that. An old bridge. Rather narrow and not fun to drive across on a windy day at all.

Bridge Experience

By lula633 |

Bridge was exciting, after reading about suspensions bridges it was a pleasure to actually witness one.

Wonderful Piece of Engineering, but

By VincentvanGoGo |

Getting there from the goose-poop covered walkway along the river below was weird, to say the least. There is a rickety wooden stairway without any signs indicating it will not get you to the street but to a locked gate. My wife, our dog and I ended up climbing up a steep dirt path which led to a hotel parking lot.

1849 bridge runs on a grade, very cool!

By jesser007 |

This antebellum bridge was, at one time, the longest suspension bridge in the Western Hemisphere and today, may be the oldest suspension bridge, still in use. Although vehicles are still allowed to travel across the bridge, I was able to safely walk across on the sidewalk and it took about 10 minutes one way.

What's amazing is this bridge was built in 1849 and what's even more amazing is not only does it pre-date the Civil War but this bridge runs on a grade! It is interesting that a bridge so old should have a grade to it. Most pre-1900 bridges do not run on a grade. This bridge is one of the few bridges in the entire country to be designated a National Historic Landmark, the highest honor the United States bestows upon historic structures.

Cool bridge

By Steve H |

Nation's oldest suspension bridge still in use (during our visit) although with restrictions. Parked in town and walked across the bridge and then down to the river walk and under the bridge Neat old bridge for 170 yrs old. Actual visit in May 2019.

Very historic bridge to Wheeling Island from town.

By yahootraveler64 |

If you are a bridge fan, this is one of the oldest, longest suspension bridges in the country. Wiki it and you will be impressed. Good views of the river if you walk it. You can see through the grids and if you walk or run the grid floor "disappears." This route to the Island is easy from town. The island has some neat old homes, although the glory is a little faded. The bridge will take you to the Island Casino and dog track. It is also on the town corner where the newly restored Capitol Theater is located.

Passing Through...

By Sartorial79 |

This bridge is a beautiful work of art. I'll admit, it freaked me out a little to drive across it, but I can be a chicken. If you like pretty bridges, you should stop by the area and have a look. It's pretty at night too.

Living History!!!!

By need_new_life |

This bridge is amazing!!!! It was the largest suspension bridge in the world from 1849 to 1851!! Only a few cars are allowed on it at one time which is regulated by a stop light at each side of the bridge! Fun to walk over!

Beautiful

By Sheryl B |

Highlight of Wheeling. Absolutely park and walk across. Loved the directional paintings on each side. Afterward, walk down to the river park and see it from the shore. Heavily trafficked with walkers during the day. Not a whole lot else going on downtown, but there were some fun old buildings for those who like that. Madonna of the trail only a few miles away, and worth the drive from downtown.

A must see when visiting Wheeling,Wv

By Sue N |

Wheeling Suspension Bridge is a historic art wonder every one should see. It is a must see lighted at night for the full effect. It connects Wheeling to Wheeling Island. Free to drive across.

Don't believe the reviews

By ARGOMAN |

We love small towns, especially ones with historical appeal. The bridge leads from one depressed area to a depressed city. In fact, the bridge itself is in need of ongoing maintenance and it's not being cared for.
The marketing material on this city overstates the charm and tourist opportunities.
I've been in smaller villages that do more to make tourist stop and enjoy...but not Wheeling.
Not worth stopping.

An Extention from Past to Present

By Steve H |

The stone structure rings out the earlier years of Wheeling's vast past. I highly recommend if you are interested by historic landmarks and architecture to visit this awesome element of Wheeling's past !!

old

By eric w |

the thing is amazing, a feat in its time, we walked over it and it sways like the golden gate bridge

Not for the Vertigo Prone!

By Libby P |

Interesting little innovative bridge for its time. (I believe it was once the longest suspension bridge in the country)

We planned on walking the bridge the entire length, BUT 3/4 of the way, I made the mistake of standing in the middle of the bridges road to take a picture... and let the height get to me! LOL
The bridge grates are open to below more so than the walkway was- I didn't think it would effect me, but it did! Whoops!
So if you are prone to vertigo, don't do what I did!

(NOTE: The walkway is fairly narrow and may not be wheelchair friendly)

Wow

By Kat562 |

If you enjoy looking at the tremendous work it takes on making these bridges, then you must see this one, always a site.

It was the largest suspension bridge in the world from 1849 until 1851

By Andrey N |

It was the largest suspension bridge in the world from 1849 until 1851. The Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the main channel of the Ohio River at Wheeling, West Virginia. The bridge was a very interesting engineering piece of history. We wanted to see the bridge but it was under renovation. They were doing bridge repair, so the bridge was closed to motor vehicles. We could only walk on one side of the street near the bridge and get some good pictures. Hope it reopens.

neat bridge

By blockparty216 |

My husband always says he is afraid to cross, yet always wants to go this way. It is just another nice place to see.

Always beautiful

By Jaymi S |

Check out the view of the suspension bridge from the Waterfront. Also, the Aetnaville bridge (now closed to car traffic) that connects the North end of the Island to the Ohio side of the River.

Highlight of Our Trip!

By aleisethefunny |

We went on a Sunday and it was raining so we had the bridge to ourselves. We loved it. Cars aren't able to drive on it so you can walk down the center. You can see through walkway to the river below and the view of the river from the bridge was amazing. There are signs to tell people of the history of the bridge which were really cool. It was built in 1849! It was a little hard to find parking and we had to walk through downtown a little ways which was a treat in itself because the buildings are beautiful. I would make a special trip to see this bridge if you are into history or bridges.

Wow - drove across an historic bridge

By arewethereyetarewe |

We didnt get out to look closer, but we were able to drive across a bridge that has helped millions of travelers. Incredible to think of how many stories are linked to this landmark during the westward migration and other travels for more than a century. I will plan time for a visit on foot if we get to Wheeling again. BEAUTIFUL AREA and many things to see. Too bad we only had an overnight stop, and were itching to get home w/4 teens in the van.

a long weekend

By Michele S |

the bridge is nice to walk on however it is not easy to get great pictures of it, there is not much space to park close to it

Great for tourists to see oldest suspension bridge in US (I think)

By JEREMY_and_LISA |

The bridge is very old, but in great shape and a landmark for history in Wheeling. Road my bike across this hundreds of times as a kid, and still love seeing it.

Neat Suspension Bridge

By danamarie31 |

We drove across the bridge to check it out. If you want a nice few of the bridge I would take one of the trails and walk along and enjoy the view.

Check in at the Visitors Center first to learn about the history of the bridge

By Wanderlust777 |

It's astonishing that this 150-year-old bridge is still standing and carrying cars across the Ohio River!! To get the best view and full experience of the bridge, you should drive across it (slowly) to the island. But before you do that, it's important to stop off at the downtown Visitors Center, which explains the full history of the bridge, its construction, economic importance, and engineering significance. Then you'll be able to fully appreciate this survivor and its idiosyncrasies. (For example, steamships on the Ohio had to be designed with folding funnels so that they could pass under the bridge and reach Pittsburgh.)

Evocative

By Charles C |

I was compelled to visit this bridge since I learned about it: the bridge built to complete the National Road, and the world's longest suspension bridge when it was constructed in the 1850s. If that gets you, you'll love it; if not, never mind.

Nice photo op

By kclark172017 |

This bridge is a wonderful piece of architecture. Photographing it was slightly challenging since it was hard to find a good place to stand and get a good angle. We walked and even drove around a little until we found some good spots. It was worth the time. Got some great pictures.

Great Historic Bridge

Suspension bridge.

We also have a Suspension bridge in Ky.

By Sharon S |

That type of bridge is unique and not found everywhere. Our bridge is a lot longer but is basically the same and it ws just neat to see the comparisions of the two bridges

Great view and historic bridge

By Sivan M |

Parking is difficult but there’s an inn nearby and the ‘Welcome to Wheeling’ sign. The bridge is about a 1/4 mile long and you have to be careful when walking since you could easily drop your phone in the water. This is a great place for photos if you’re visiting Wheeling.

Amazing

Something to talk about driving across this suspension bridge also known as "the scary bridge" but it was not scary at all to us just amazing.

My brother, a civil engineer, asked to see the bridge when he visited me. Living here, I had grown accustomed to seeing this landmark bridge, or not seeing it, the way you get used to not seeing the wallpaper. But when I took him to see it, he opened my eyes to it's beauty and it's history. We parked downtown and walked across the bridge, and that's the best way to really see it.

Fun, Scary

It was neat to walk over one of our nations oldest built suspension bridges. It was scary seeing the water below between the slats you walk on. Work a visit.

Bridge visit.

It’s an old suspension bridge. It’s nice history, but other than that not much excitement. You can walk across it to Wheeling Island. Nice photo opportunities.

Worth the Drive

Reviewing a suspension bridge may not seem all that important but the Wheeling Suspension Bridge is a snapshot in time that is certainly worth the drive. The bridge is over a 1,000 feet in length and crosses the Ohio River. It happened to be the largest suspension bridge in the world and held this record back in 1849 for 2 years. This was well before the Brooklyn Bridge. The metal grate is what you drive on and is supported by cable attached to two huge stone towers on either end. And if you are the daring type, open your car door and if you are at the right speed, the grate dissappears and it looks like you are floating! However, this is more than likely illegal. But Hey, if you have read this far about a bridge, then I say a road trip is in order! : )

Awesome

You can feel history when you drive over this bridge. If you have time you need to pull over and just touch the stones of history. When on the Wheeling island check out the water level of the many different floods.

Worth seeing

Grand Old Lady, one of a kind, longest Suspension bridge in
West Virginia. Some weight restrictions on vehicles.

Interesting to drive over the bridge

Very scary driving over the bridge. The ridges on the road move the car. Amazing this small town had the largest suspension bridge until the Brooklyn Bridge was built.

Worth driving over.

This is a very old suspension bridge that was easy to find and drive over. It has been well maintained. Follow the signs from the Wheeling Island Casino.

My wife and I were in town and I wanted to see this bridge with my own eyes. I have seen photos but I wanted to see this marvel with my own eyes! We weren't disappointed!

A little disappointing

We chose to drive over the Suspension Bridge on our way out of town. While the bridge itself is very beautiful, the location is a little bit of a let down. The surrounding area on each side of the bridge is rather run down, and where I parked to take pictures was littered with trash and broken glass.

America's oldest suspension bridge. Located in Wheeling WV. Very cool bridge. Was fun to drive across to Wheeling Island. Must see if you're in the area.

Nice view.

Wonderful historic bridge in a historic town. The lights on the bridge are beautiful at night! You can feel a slight sway when windy.

Great history.

This historic bridge is one of the largest suspension bridges built today. It has a summary of its historic value on the east side of the bridge
