Go in the spring

By Linda C |

We went in the fall and most things were dead. Would have been in testing in the spring. Could see that most areas were well taken care of.

Nice place to stop for

By ShuliG |

Nice place to stop on the way. A good break to loosen the legs from a long drive. It's nice to walk around the paths and see the plants and flowers, the squirrels and the birds.

Walk the labyrinth

By Jean L |

The plantings and walkways are amazing with fountains and Vistas. We like to pretend the Mansion is our home. We had a spiritual practice walking the Labyrinth. You will have a good time here and feel very happy you came

Calm, Beautiful and Relaxing Attraction

Peaceful Garden of tranquility

Plants are pretty and well planned out. The rose garden smells delightful. Limited amount of fauna with huge parking lot. Plenty of free parking. Very nice coffee shop.

History, natural beauty and gardens!

By fred_shahrooz |

The Frelinghuysen family (like the Keans) can be considered among the most important and distinguished home grown clans of NJ (here's an excellent article on that topic: http://njmonthly.com/articles/lifestyle/people/like-father-like-son-and-son-and-son.html) and this arboretum is just one of the many gifts bestowed by that family. It is a very beautiful place to visit any time of the year. Excellent spring and summer gardens, a beautiful old mansion, excellent trails to walk for hours and a fantastic place to lay on the grass with a loved one or for a quiet and peaceful mediation.

An oasis with lots of possibilities

By njcycle |

A hilly sanctuary with a gilded age manse and lovely grounds. Slowly evolving towards a first-rank arboretum, but not there yet.

More than an Arboretum

By TwoT0Travel |

It is hard to believe that this is a county park. The flower gardens are just beautiful. Each garden has it’s own theme, annual, rock, rose, etc. In addition, there are walking paths around the whole arboretum to help you to enjoy nature.

2024 Spring Flowers

By MitchPhyllis65 |

My wife and I stopped by the Frelinghuysen Arboretum to see the Spring blossoms and early flowers. It was a beautiful sunny day for a walk.

Lovely Arboretum Plants & Flowers

By MitchPhyllis65 |

My wife and I enjoy walking the peaceful and lovely grounds of Frelinghuysen Arboretum and taking pictures of the wide variety of plants and flowers growing here. Each season brings something different to see.

Quiet and full of nice, manageable trails.

By NJPodroz76 |

I bring my kids, ages 5-9 to this Arboretum occasionally for some exercise. You'll find a trail of every length. In the Spring/Summer, the place seems much bigger because of the cover from trees, and it is possible to lose your way a bit. However, you won't be lost for long.

Beautifl colour everywhere, bumble bees and butterflies galore

By kunduku |

This was a very interesting and peaceful garden, with many different areas to explore. The gorgeous blue skies and Indian summer no doubt helped but I imagine the arboretum would be a lovely place to visit, whatever the season.
There was ample parking and plenty of seats dotted around to allow you to rest and take in the beauty around you.
I went with a friend but I would have been equally happy on my own with a book and/or a camera. A great way to spend a quiet hour or two

Best Wedding Venue EVER

By Cyndi R |

I had my wedding ceremony and reception here om 9-9-23 and the experience was AMAZING. I could not have had a better venue. Chase was fantastic as an Event Planner. He was available every step of the way. I will post photos as I gather them. It was a truly magical experience for all of my guests, as well as Bob and I. Thank you, Arboretum!

50/50 review

By Britain B |

So it's very small.
Nothing like Dukes of you are looking for small history and areas of "flowers" staff
Is friendly. Has a small cafe on site which we didn't eat at. But seemed like a lot of business people come grab a bite and sit on the deck over the marsh for lunch. I can see how it's nice and relaxing. There was a few spots we enjoyed and took lovely photography but for us we rather frequent other establishments. It's a nice place to get away and try a new area. I would go in the visitors center and talk to whomever behind the desk to learn what is to offer.

Always calming and restorative

By Bongo_Bass_Man |

Have visited many times over the past 10 years. Always something new to discover! And this place always helps to center me, and provides a helpful pause from the sometimes hectic pace of life in New Jersey.

Peaceful

By Tensoc |

A great getaway any season.
Spring is gorgeous and with the cafe open its a great place to linger even longer.
The library downstairs is a good place to get inspired

Stroll through the gardens

By Dee E |

Beautifully maintained gardens. It was voided of people so the beauty of the gardens and the silence created a very romantic atmosphere.

Nice place to spend a few hours

By wmd817 |

I used to go there frequently by myself to walk thru the nature. It's nice. They don't allow dogs, so when I got my buddy we now go to the many other venues available that allow dogs. If you don't have a dog ,it's a good choice.

Take Your Lady on a Date Here

By bhons21 |

My wife and I went here with the camera and went on a romantic stroll. Lot's of interesting gardens and trees to see, and plenty of great photo opportunities. The best gardens surround the two buildings on the property, so spend your time there.

Good for relaxing strolls and picnics

By LongshotDC |

Not too much botanical information, so you won't become a forester or botanist when you're done. But the grounds are well maintained for a County park, expansive and pretty darn quiet. Really good place to go and unwind after a long day - bring a book, blanket and find a shady spot to plunk down (I had many a lunchtime at Frelinghuysen!). Definitely recommend it to friends and co-workers and keep going back. No fee park (even better!).

An oasis of calm and education

By robert h |

Part of the Morris county Parks system Frelinghuysen serves as an oasis for those wishing a quiet walk around the 100+ acres with the opportunity to enjoy various botanic displays. The property has a gorgeous Colonial Revival "summer home" built just before the turn of the century, 1900 that is, from which several walking trails, conifer, azalea, etc. can be accessed. The Haggerty Center offers numerous events year round. For children there is The Gingerbread Wonderland, and for adults there are horticultural events, courses or the annual plant sale. A good place for a quiet walk when things are in bloom, a cold winter's day, or to view the fall colors. A worthy stop for someone interested in plants, attending one of the many programs or just taking a quiet walk with their thoughts.

Something for Everyone

By monkeyboobs |

We have visited this place for years. Love the Gingerbread competion in the Winter, then strolling the gardens and getting ideas for out own home.

Perfect springtime visit

By sjgkmg |

The end of winter at Frelinghuysen Arboretum

By MitchPhyllis65 |

Today was a beautiful sunny day so my wife and I stopped by Frelinghuysen Arboretum to welcome the beginning of spring and the end of winter. Anytime of the year is a good time to take pictures, especially if it gets you outside for the fresh air.

Great place for photos

By Hiker1812 |

We took our engagement photos here with a friend on a cool winter afternoon. The variety of settings and planting offered so many options, and free admission makes it all so worth it! Looking forward to coming back at different times of year for varied vegetation.

A wonderful experience at the gardens.

By Jemlnlx |

A wonderful experience. We decided to make s trip there from the Bronx on an early Sunday afternoon. The drive was supposed to be about an hour, but it took closer to an hour and a twenty minutes due to traffic getting out of the Bronx and crossing the GWB. Parking was easy. Lots of parking space there. Lots to see. Tons of plants and flowers as expected. Everything is labeled properly. There is an education center which at the time had a photography exhibit going on and was quite interesting. There is an information desk (the woman behind was very helpful) and restrooms there. There also seems to be a space that can be rented for events?!, though I am not 100% sure. There is a separate cafe (Matilda's Cafe), which I didn't get to visit, but I did look it up online prior to visiting and saw that they had beverages, as well as pastries and sandwiches for sale. Around the back of is a little tree ring exhibit that displays how to count the annual rings of a cross section of a tree. There were also more of the gardens being built and a sign that states that they are currently expanding. Aside from the main area with the education center and cafe, there are a few basic trails with scenic forest areas and a running stream. We started the trail but did not get far due to the real feel of 100 degrees on that particular day. It was a brutal one. An overall lovely time and it was all free. I would love to go back to finish the trails and see the stream. Recommended to any and everyone.

GINGERBREAD HOUSES

By armando c |

We came here for the gingerbread competition. We come every year for this and it always seems to get better and better. This arboretum has so much to offer...hiking trails, special programs and really beautiful landscapes. We will always come back here for more fun

Stop and Smell the Roses

By pulmqueen |

We found this on TA as a top attraction to visit in NJ and its for FREE! In the middle of busy New Jersey one can find a place of tranquility and respite to just stop and enjoy the little things of life. This is a beautiful park even in the late Fall. I will have to come back in spring to see the amazing flowers and all the different carefully attended gardens. There is a large main house, a café and an educational building. There are miles of trails to ride bikes, jog and walk. A great place for families. Everything was closed except Matilda's Café. I wish I had a map of the trails. But just spending the afternoon walking around the grounds was really special. They have various special events, so check their website.

By LCHNJ |

We enjoy taking a walk here on a nice spring or fall day. The gardens are pretty and we also walk in the woods (somewhat hilly and muddy so wear hiking boots or at least snearkers) and the fields. Parts of the trails are near Route 287 so are noisy but mostly it is a quiet and peaceful place. The plantings in the parking lots are even nice to view. Unfortunately the gift shop is no longer open - we used to find good gifts here. It is free to walk here.

Tranquil & Lovely

By shel7 |

This is a beautiful spot to visit on a lovely day. Especially nice in the summertime when everything is in bloom. Great place to wander about and make certain to visit the lovely gift shop. Ample parking.

Frelinghuysen Arboretum

By jellywits |

This is a lovely place to spend an afternoon walking the grounds and enjoying the gardens. The retreat like atmosphere is sure to please adults and children, who can roam and run. There is a small café which serves light lunch, muffins and pastries, etc. but you can bring your own and enjoy a picnic in a sunny or shady spot. When we there there recently participating in making a moss earn from chicken wire, there was also a juried show of African violets. If you wish to participate in an activity, go to the main desk inside the building opposite the parking area and register there. There's always something going on and if there is not, just enjoy the grounds!

great relaxing place that is kept well

By zodreb |

It's nice! Clean and welcoming visitors center with 2 sets of bathrooms and a really cool library. You can see the whole gardens area in about 30 minutes to an hour. If you want to walk the trails then I'm sure that's much longer, but a lot of the trails are closed due to damage. A great way to spend 1-3 hours. We sat at their tables to eat our lunch two days in a row because it was so comfortable. Lots of locals seem to just hang out there and sit.

Beautiful grounds!

By Mellam |

The grounds were so well kept. There are lovely walking trails throughout the property. Some were very flat and easy to walk, others, hilly and a little more challenging. The atmosphere was calm and relaxing. I met some friends here for a lovely walk and lunch at Matilda's cafe. The cafe was very nice. Good selection of homemade lunches and sweets, smoothies and vitamin water. Plant sale offered a wide variety of plants, shrubs and trees. A wonderful experience! Definitely plan to return!

Beautiful Tulips

By ownedbypug |

Very nice mix of plants and trees. The tulips were gorgeous. The paths were clean and easy to walk. It was a nice and relaxing place.

beautiful

By Diane D |

beautiful place and a great way to escape for a couple of hours. Staff lovely and I always get great ideas for my own garden. A special place.

Rediscovered Beauty ....

By Wenovo |

A beautiful park to visit, it was nice to come back and rediscover it ....

It is well maintained and a pleasure to walk through. Really beautiful on the first day in November on a sunny afternoon. Several families with children and hired photographers were looking to get the most scenic shots. Few families brought their picnic on the well kept lawn.

Roses were still in bloom, slowly fading away, the colorful foliage this time of year was brilliant! The small quaint Cafe house was closed. The large Mansion was closed too, it is beautiful, but on a closer look a good paint job is needed.

The park is free to enter, parking is plentiful and free too.
We enjoyed our time here, a nice walk on a sunny afternoon...

Very nice place to visit

By Julie |

Been to Frelinghuysen at least 2 times a year for the last 3 years. Always something to see. The gardens are most likely during mid-late spring with the wisteria and tulips in full bloom. Many trails to explore. Nice education center available.

Beautiful place for Picnic !!

By John E |

The Arboretum is really nice and has good place for picnic! Place available for 30-40 people to sit and enjoy outdoor lunch.

Beautiful site.

By Jill B |

Serene, contemplative and informative. Optional lectures for a nominal fee; fantastic tour of "Botany in the Bible. "

Spring has sprung

By MitchPhyllis65 |

Spring has sprung at Frelinghuysen Arboretum with all the beautiful colors. Next to bloom will be the roses to enjoy while walking in the gardens.

Informative and Enjoyable

By Anand G |

The entrance has very little to guide you and we develop apprehensions. But once inside, we encounter loads of info on various types of plants, the way they are cultivated, their applications etc etc. The wooded area provides a great walkway. The whole set up is exceptionally well maintained and can be enjoyed in self help mode without hassles. We should slow down and take in the info as well as the beauty one by one in a relaxed manner. The guidelines for garden management offered to householders are top class. Great place to visit in the area.

Great place to take an afternoon

By G E |

Love the time to walk around and see the flowers. Nice side trip for the afternoon, if you like to stop and smell the flowers.

A must see!

By dentalhy |

We spent about two hours or so here on a Saturday morning. Fun trails and interesting trees and plants. We were particularly impressed at the children's gardens. So well done.

The only odd thing was the lack of interaction when we went inside to get a map, and use the restroom. The woman inside barely looked up and did not acknowledge us.

The grounds are beautiful, check out the buildings and architecture.

A stroll through gardens of spring blossoms

By mats336 |

We just had a short period of time before meeting friends for dinner in Morristown. I am so happy we stopped. Expect a peaceful place with rolling hills and floral visual delights. The day came with dark cloudy skies with a hint of sunlight that lit up the blossoming trees. It was gorgeous view.

Happy Trails

By Timberhide |

It may be because I love Autumn but last Saturday was a beautiful Autumn day to go hiking through the wooded trails of this arboretum.

Upon arrival, my siblings and I walked the quaint cottage grounds with its garden pond and gazebo bridges. There's a little restaurant/cafe and lots more but we didn't really browse the interior; being pressed for time we wanted to walk the trails. Overhead, a hawk greeted us with its smooth glide and circle as we started our excursion. I love to watch hawks fly.

I don't remember the names of the trails but I took in a lot of scenery. Thanks to the late afternoon sun, it cast a certain lighting that brightened the changing foliage. The trees are as diverse as they are majestic. It's a magic and serene place, especially for those with fairy tale imagination. We'd like to go again to continue exploring.

Bird watching ME!

By Marybelle231 |

After attending one of many interesting talks at the Arboretum and taking a map from the lobby I decided to enjoy the crisp air and beautiful day. The grounds provide marked paths to lose yourself in nature clearly marked so someone like me would not wander off. The music in the trees and the scurrying of the squirrels convinced me of my wise decision to take a walk. I must have disturbed someone's nap as I look up and see a huge owl checking me out. I stood silently in awe and admiration of never seeing one in the wild. I must have lingered too long for his liking and he simply glided on those huge wings to a more peaceful spot, away from nosey humans.

Small, lovely quick walk visit

By CycleJim |

One of the many recycled mansion properties in the area with pleasant gardens and EZ walking. Nearby I-287 makes it a little noisier than other options like Willowwood (http://www.morrisparks.net/aspparks/wwmain.asp).

Enjoyable place to relax

By Melinda K |

Hard to believe in busy Morristown there is a lovely place to relax and walk and just enjoy nature. There are still some roses out...but lots of other different plants, flowers and trees to look at. There are quite a few benches up and around the buildings, but only a couple as you walk down around the meadow and conifer area. We were told area was level and an easy walk, but it's downhill, pathway a bit uneven and then of course uphill on the return trip. With my knees and my husband's legs not the greatest, a couple more places to rest would have been nice. The area was so pretty...we didn't really mind. It was worth the effort. Saw groundhogs, deer and many birds on our walk. Great place to get away for a little while. Will def go back again.

Great Place to Visit Year Round

By Elayne R |

Don't miss the Christmas Gingerbread House Competition! The Gardens are great any growing season too!

For those who love flowers

By Adrienne B |

This hidden gem speaks to the part of it which was a private estate as well as the part which is an award-winning arboretum. Shady walks; perennial gardens, wide lawns and a wedding photo venue. Check out the restored coach house section.

BEAUTIFUL & FREE!

By QuentB |

In my quest to see & do more things to do in my area, I came across this in my area search on Trip Advisor. So I had to check it out.

What a beautiful & expansive place this is! 127 acres of varies trees, flowers & plant life.

I wasn't aware prior to my visiting & reading some of the reviews who the Frelinghuysers were. They were pretty prestigious people in NJ.

I went there just before it opened on a Sunday (Hours are 9am to 4:30pm daily) to beat the heat of the day.

There are quite an assortment of trails available for walking, hiking & even equestrian. It's a serene place. There were quite a few people already there, but the place being as huge as it was it seemed quite sparse.

There are many places you can sit & take in the views. The grounds & gardens are nicely cared for. I really enjoyed the few hours I spent there.

They have a café on the grounds. Named after the daughter Matilda. Didn't check that out however.

When I was there, I saw an area where it looked like they were setting up (or perhaps taking down) for something. Perhaps a wedding party or something along those lines. Certainly a nice place to have such.

I will definitely revisit again in the Fall. Just got to warm too early the day I went to stay longer.

Beautiful Place to Walk

By Voices H |

This is a beautiful, peaceful place to walk and enjoy the grounds! You can take a short or long walk around the grounds to take in the flowers and greenery and stop to read some history along the way. The Arboretum used to host a Gingerbread Show with family-friendly competitions and a craft show, which was GREAT for the area, but they stopped doing this some time ago (even after the individual stepped down and a local crafter stepped up to help). I would love to see this team do more for the community, making it an outdoor spot for education and enjoyment, aside from just walking/exploring the grounds. There is so much underutilized potential here!

Beautiful Garden

By Fusun777 |

Love going there. Especially in Spring. Beautiful flowers, birds, trees and ver peaceful.
I lived many years in the UK where, in my mind, the most beautiful garden are.
Frelinghuysen Arboretum reminds me of English Gardens.

Pleasant Visit

By william c |

Beautifully maintained arboretum with regular exhibits. Very child friendly staff. Lots of opportunities for walking or hiking in the nice weather. Free parking on premise. Check their website for current activities.

Great way to spend a summer day.

By Mark and Rita W |

There are several areas. There are organized gardens behind the main house and coffee shop, a student gardens, which are not open to the public. There's a nice trail in the woods which is a great way to have a nice walk in the shade. My favorite is the rose garden by the mansion.

By Julia S |

Went here last summer. So romantic, so stunning, so beautiful. Lots of land that you can just stroll through, gardens, benches, places to have a picnic, beautiful flowers, buzzing with the noise of insects. I would HIGHLY recommend coming here to relax or have a picnic or just have a stroll with a loved one.

By Cosmopolitan30547 |

Frelinghuysen Arboretum is the beautiful arboretum in Morristown, NJ. We've picniced on the large lawn, walked the trail, visited the gardens and toured the gift shop all with small children in tow. It is a calm place to get inspired to work in your own garden. The gift shop has many unique gifts for the whole family. Well worth a visit during the gingerbread house display during the holiday season, as well.

lovely grounds but no extensive show gardens

By Lorna B. |

We stopped here recently while we were in Morristown enjoying its historic sites. We thought the grounds here were pretty and pleasant to stroll, although there are only a few paved garden walks. We admired several huge beautiful trees on the grounds (it is an arboretum, after all), and the autumn foliage was at its peak. There are no huge show gardens here; instead, hiking trails seem to be the emphasis. We were disappointed that the mansion we walked up to was not open for touring; that would have been a nice feature (it’s being restored, we were told). There was a rose garden behind the mansion, with roses still blooming even in late October. We did enjoy seeing the carriage house, with several interesting historic coaches and carriages on display.

There is no café here, but some tables & chairs were available outside the Education Building for brown-bagging it; rest rooms are there as well. There is plentiful free parking. All in all, we spent about an hour strolling the pleasant grounds and viewing the carriages. Maybe in spring and summer, there are more colorful gardens to enjoy, but we didn’t find much to see or do.

nice to see

By JohnGross |

its a nice place to walk around and stroll through te gardend and the property on a nice warm day .there's a lot to see

My favorite place in the world!!!

By Jersey0679 |

I lived right next to this park for 3 years. I only found out about it a year after I moved in. I spent so many beautiful days with my friends and my child there. It has a lot of exotic trees and flowers. You can see a lot of beautiful birds there. It's free to enter. There's a small carriage house left by previous owners who donated this property to the state. There's a little museum house to see inside, it has a lot of its old furnishings, pretty cool. There's always some cool events going on here, various flower shows, etc. It's almost never crowded. There're also a couple of walking trails. I love this place and I miss it very much!

Exploring Frelinghuysen Arboretum

By MitchPhyllis65 |

I’ve lived in Morristown over 50 years and never really paid much attention to the Arboretum until recently. What a lovely estate with all the different trees and plants. My father loved taking pictures of the gardens here and yesterday I found myself doing the same thing. I recommend taking time to explore the various gardens and the trails around the estate to see what Mother Nature has to offer. You can get a map of the estate at the Education Center.

Only regarding the craft - gingerbread house exhibit

By Michael B |

We tried twice to enter, on a Saturday two days before it closed. At 2:15 and 3:30 both had lines out the door. Then another 60 ft to the entrance inside. It's only $2 to get in, but I can't tell you how many crafters or houses were there. There were a ton of little kids there with parents. So a popular spot to bring the kids. Another reviewer said a 45 min wait, would have to agree. Even leaving less than hour before closing, cars were coming in to the lot.

Beautiful Gardens. Wish the Mansion was open for viewing.

By DetectiveofTravel |

This is a wonderful garden. This land was a gift to Morris County. It is taken care of so lovingly. There are trails to walk on that wouldn't accommodate someone with mobility issues - but there are plenty of educational spaces to visit inside the building and outside that I wouldn't let that stop me. I cannot wait to go again. For those of us that have visited the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina this might be a bit disappointing - but it is still beautiful on its own merit.

A lovely, peaceful place to visit with Extra Special events sometimes

By LoveMyBritRoots |

Frelinghuysen Arboretum is a pleasant place for a stroll through beautiful grounds with many specimen trees, as well. The "mansion" houses special events, activities, and plant sales throughout the year. My very favorite special event is the Gingerbread Wonderland in December. It runs a week or so and the creativity and participation is delightful. I'd recommend a visit in every season.

Magnificent

By Michael A |

Decided to spend the day in morristown the other day...and this place stole the show. Extraordinary PC of land in morristown and high praise for the well kept grounds. The garden in front of Matilda's cafe is worth the trip...which cost nothing bug a donation which you will proudly give for this slice of beauty. Wish I could grow flowers in my garden like this

beautiful setting

love the place! keep coming back to see more and more!
take the family for a lovely stroll in a beautiful, natural setting.

By Passport16981 |

The volunteers work very hard to keep the gardens beautiful & well groomed. It is a place to visit & relax with nature surround you. A wonderful escape from the hustle & bustle of the week. Try it!

Another Gem in the Morris County Park system

By NJPlantsman |

Frelinghuysen Arboretum is well worth a visit if you live within a couple of hours of the park. There is something for just about everyone. History, open space, incredible gardens, trails etc.

If you love gardens or gardening you will surely visit again and again. There is a formal Rose Garden behind the beautiful mansion. There are shade gardens and water gardens, a knot garden and fern paths. There are tropical plants scattered throughout and a raised garden of dwarf plants. There is also a large rain garden.

When you first arrive you are greeted by the most beautifully designed gardens within the parking lot.

The grounds are beautifully maintained. The plantings are very well designed.

There is also an auditorium where lectures are held throughout the year. More information is available on their website.

My favorite time to visit is spring through fall. Though winter is surely beautiful as well.

Hidden Gem in plain sight!

By Cris G |

A must visit oasis. I frequently stop here for a quiet hour of reflection walking amongst the beautiful gardens that change with the seasons. Walking trails of various levels. Braille paths, an educational center, the list goes on. I was disappointed that the little café was closed for the rest of the summer. But that did not deter from my enjoyment. Also have done XC skiing in winter. Don’t miss.

A Very Peaceful Country Estate

By TheExplorerFamily |

This 127 acre property is a really nice place to visit if you have some free time.

We came here on the Easter weekend, and enjoyed walking on the meandering paths and on the vast expanse of grass past the lovely Colonial Revival Mansion that was built in 1891. It was still early in spring when we visited, so there was not much foliage. Still, there were many trees, plants, bushes and blooming flowers for us to look at. We loved the fact that everything was nicely labeled.

The Estate was once called Whippany Farm, and was the country home of George Griswold Frelinghuysen and his wife Sara. After their daughter, Matilda, inherited the place, she converted it into an arboretum, and bequeathed it to Morris County in 1969. There are no tours of the Mansion, but all parts of the grounds are open to the public. The Rose Garden is supposed to be marvelous, so we will return in late summer to enjoy it.

It is an absolutely peaceful oasis for those who would like to enjoy some quiet time. There are a lot of pretty arbors, a large Gazebo with a table and chairs, and benches all over the place to just sit, read and unwind. There are also many photo ops for memorable pictures for the camera enthusiast.

There is something for everyone here – wide open spaces, awesome trails, carefully designed and manicured gardens, a library in the basement of the visitor center, cooking classes, educational programs and workshops. What more can one ask for in a place that has no admission fee? Plus, there is plenty of parking all around.

Just put on your good walking shoes and come for a few quality hours. You will not be sorry.

Great flowering trees and tulips!

By Karene L |

Nice uncrowded place to see spring flowers and trees. We were there on a late Monday afternoon. There were many tulips and flowering cherry trees.

Worth A Visit

By Estell S |

The gardens are lovely with many unusual varies of plants, flowers, and trees. The location Is easy to find if you follow the websites guidelines. There is ample parking and there is no admission. The small children we were with enjoyed the gardens and made many discoveries for example the statues. There is an excellent cafe on the premises as well. The carriage house with buggies was interesting. The main house has historical value. The walking trails are not too much to do. This is a lovely way to enjoy nature and to appreciate a beautiful environment. Quite well maintained.

Eh!

By artlaw1 |

Asian festival was a total disappointment for my entire family. The outside arrangements were ok. Might give the, another chance but not rushing to do so.

Digital Photo Academy

By 2TravelLuvers |

My girlfriend and I participated in a photography workshop at the Arboretum. While the class was a really good learning experience and we were able to take some pretty good pictures, the location could've been better. Of course, our frame of reference is Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania. Not sure any other location could compete.

New Jersey's Finest

A wonderful experience to enjoy the autumn foliage. We enjoyed a memorable hike, as well. Admission was free but it was worth a million dollars.

Beautiful grounds

What a lovely way to spend a few hours. Well landscaped paths take you around the gardens. Labels give you information about the various plants A variety of flowers and greenery that changes with the season.

Beautiful and informative

This arboretum in the heart of Morris County is truly a gift to the area. Bring a picnic and dine under the gigantic tree surrounded by decking. It is a place you will return to again and again.

An awesome public park to visit on a sunny day

By Sir_Vince |

Decided to check out the Arboretum an boy was it a great time. Lots of cool trails and landscape to see. A great place to get some sunny and relax with family friends or even a date. The Cafe that was there was very convenient for a quick brunch. The fruit smoothies and Chai sweet tea were really refreshing on a hot summer day. An excellent park in the morris county area with lots of room and green space out for all kinds of activity's! Will be coming back for sure! Also a great venue for weddings and out door parties!

Not for summer

By EY_GlobeTrekker |

Nothing is in bloom in the winter. Come back and visit when things are on bloom. One star only due to winter visit. Disappointed the area is very small to walk around.

beautiful...

By sanju_222323 |

it was right under our nose and we did not get a hint of it. we visited one fine afternoon with parents. parking is easy to find. Stop at the visitor center and the roam this beautiful garden.
Enjoy a picnic on the Great Lawn, take memorable family photographs under the Rose Garden Arbor, celebrate a wedding under a reservable tent, read a book next to a water feature, tour the Carriage House, and be amazed at the historic horse-drawn carriages. it was straight from 70s Cowboy movies.

Frelinghuysen Mansion situated in the park looks great, but it was closed. the rose garden just beside it, was beautiful. This breathtaking site also offers a wedding. The first Sunday of every month, a free tour of the grounds is offered at 2 p.m., leaving from the Education Center. Monthly art exhibits provide interest when you need a respite from spring rains. The first weekend in May, The Friends of the Frelinghuysen Arboretum’s Annual Plant Sale fills the big tent with carefully selected, well-bred plants.

Beautiful park with trails, gardens and a lively calendar of activities

By JerseyJean |

I have lived in the area for 20 years and somehow missed visiting this lovely park. I think I was put off by the (misguided) thought that this was a just bunch of flower beds and trees with labels! Yes, there are truly beautiful gardens for much of the year. But there are also extensive paths and trails, many of which are flat and easy for people young and old to walk on. The views are magnificent. They also have many interesting activities, from a gingerbread house bake-off to "how to grow garlic"! So if you are in the area consider a visit and don't be put off by the name

Enjoy the experience

By Randy T |

At 127 acres, The Frelinghuysen Arboretum is great stop while in Morristown. If you're interested in woodlands, meadows, gardens, trees and shrubs in a beautiful setting, here's the place. Cell phone tours are offered seasonally. Enjoy!

Worth the visit

By Kathleen G |

The arboretum is a very nice place to go for a walk, catch a quick lunch and just enjoy some time with beautiful scenery. We went at mid day and found it not very busy but fun to just walk the beautiful trails and see the lovely gardens

This is excellent in the summer

By steve |

i have walked at the arboretum plenty of time. i stumbled across this place years ago and i will continue to walk there in the summer again

Frelinghuysen Arboretum

By geor64 |

Great place to go in Spring when flowers are out. Not much to do rest of year. Nice for running, although somewhat hilly. Nice for wedding pictures. Historic Frelinghuysen house but not always available for viewing.

Great escape

By Amy H |

I've visited the Arboretum often. It is a beautiful quiet place to take photos of flowers, walk, learn about flora, play frisbee or picnic on the lawn, and snowshoe or X-country ski in winter. An escape from Morristown that makes you feel as if you have traveled further away to the country. They host many activities and it is lovely in any season.

Stunning

By P F B |

Firs time visit, won't be the last. Very friendly, helpful staff. Several gardens filled with colorful tulips very nicely laid out. Several walking trails. Also a barn with old historic buggies. Very impressive - am surprised that it was not crowded on a beautiful Saturday.

A Peaceful Retreat

By gnogl |

We have not gotten tired of coming back on a regular basis to this piece of open space. There are always new things to discover. The place is always well kept up and we come here in all four seasons.

Trees

By NotoriousCLO |

a fairly good place, but the nearby highway keeps the woods noisy and sort of ruins it. That said, where else are you going to go nearby? Combine it with a trip to the county library across the street. Meh.

Just sublime

By sally9242014 |

For those passing through the area, stop in and see the Arboretum in all its glory. It is a beautiful, serene place. At this time of year, there is a cafe open Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Great place to eat, stroll enjoy. If you live in the area, you need to take advantage of the wonderful classes and programs that they offer there. Become a 'Friend' and get fabulous discounts, on programs, local garden centers, restaurants, and free admission to gardens in other states. What's not to like?

Historic House and Specialty Gardens

By Dianne W |

Look for the Victorian white home on the hill. Park nearby. It is often open for events. Some gardens are formal..vintage .roses and others are more natural to highlight specimum trees. Blooms change with the season so multiple vists are needed. Summer brings outdoor concerts on weekends.

A beautiful oasis

By Kathleen A |

The overall peacefulness will bring you the calmness that you've been searching for! A big surprise!

Nice trails for a short walk

By 245randallc |

This is not a huge place and we were there in March so not much was blooming. But the trails were pleasant, mostly gravel paths. It took about an hour to do them. We could see where this would be a wonderful place in the Spring.

Wonderful oasis in Morristown

By DebraBonnie |

Beautiful gardens and plantings. A lovely way to spend a few hours in nature. They often have special events open to the public, but just strolling around is very satisfying to the soul.

Not that impressed

By L F |

Though the grounds were beautiful, I just didn’t understand the hooplah. We walked around the buildings and trails and just kept wondering what we were missing.

Morristown's hidden gem.

By Roy_Hinkley |

This park is best enjoyed if you can come three times a year. Once in each season, spring, summer and fall. this way, you get the benefit of the different blooms for each season. They have separate flower and vegetable gardens, and shaded seating is scattered throughout the park.

A small walk away is the old mansion. You can't go inside but the gardens behind and around it are artfully laid out and are particularly beautiful when the roses are in season.

There are various paved paths throughout the park with various shaded alcoves so you can take a break. For the braver, there are many unpaved paths that lead who knows where.

They recently opened a small restaurant in the middle of the flower/vegetable gardens but I haven't had the opportunity to try it yet.

Great geology and fauna tour

By GoeieWitte |

Visited because of the unique location, layout and seasonal offerings.
The local and nearby geology is related to formatiton of the Atlantic Ocean, volcanic rocks and the recent ice age, with overflow of Lake Passaic.
The arboretum offers a nice collection of north eastern native plants and imports.
Pleasant discovery while walking the grounds.
Visit all seasons to appreciate the diversity.

By HGLivingston |

A beautiful place to spend a summer day. A good place to get ideas for gardeners

Loved it

By Lizzie M |

We had a great visit here - me, my husband and 18 month old toddler. The internal trails were all buggy friendly, and my little one loved running along the paths and exploring. The Great Lawn was a good spot for running about and there is a little hill for kids to play on.

My only suggestion to the management would be some better signage from the car park. We set out in the wrong direction, and didn't see any real signage to get to the house and some of the trails.

There is a cafe on site, but we didn't try it out. Plenty of little seats and benches throughout the property to eat lunch.

Fantastic range of plants and flowers and they were well labeled.

Perfect Place for a Stroll with My Camera

By Ed K |

I make a point to visit (it's not far from my home) a few times a year. I love photography and I have captured some amazing shots here. It's so peaceful and relaxing to just wander around the grounds with my camera. Sometimes I even drag along my tripod and have never had a problem. You can get great closeups of the beautiful plants, flowers, and the butterfly's they attract. Gardening and plant events throughout the year, check online. They have a scavenger hunt each week kids can do with a digital camera. Also a nice place just to take a romantic stroll through the different gardens. Great escape for a weekday lunch break if you work close by.

Beautiful peaceful place

By Cheryl M |

Lovely walking trails, beautiful grounds for all seasons. I go when I need to wander in nature and see beauty.

Dog and I turned away for plant sale

By Deb R |

Of all places that you think would be welcoming to dogs was not. On a gorgeous sunny day looking forward to shopping for plants for the garden with my lovely little dog who was happy to be around the lovely surroundings we were quickly turned away upon entering. The very polite lady basically said that the park was not dog friendly and something to the effect that park police would escort us out etc... Oh my. Well I took my business to Home Depot and spent my $200 plant budget there. Their loss.

Wonderful for Tree Lovers

By indiegal |

Though it's not a large and rambling place, it's beautifully maintained and their gazebo is a relaxing place to bring a book and spend a few quiet hours...

Winter at Frelinghuysen

By MitchPhyllis65 |

We’ve been to Frelinghuysen Arboretum during all the seasons, and during the winter months when the snow covers the great lawn and the garden areas. This is a good time to visit and experience how peaceful and beautiful Frelinghuysen Arboretum can be when there’s snow on the ground.

Summer is coming to Frelinghuysen

Spring has come to Frelinghuysen Arboretum and Summer is just around the corner, so get out and enjoy the beauty of Nature.

Wonderful!

By Ned and Laura G |

Full disclosure - we are members of The Friends of Frelinghuysen. A great park with beautiful gardens, concerts, and now a great café!

We always enjoy this arboretum

By Dusty S |

We visited the arboretum most recently in July, but have been many other times during the year. We enjoy it every time, as there are different things to see and do in different seasons.

We particularly enjoy the herb and produce garden and the gardens alongside Matilda's Cafe (which is itself a lovely spot), the rock garden, and the rose garden and fountains. We always visit the little rock maze in the back corner of the property and the fern walk as well.

Overall, a pretty place where you can take a walk, have a picnic, play sports on the big lawn, or take a nice stroll through the woods.

By Arline Zatz |

A huge variety of plants, shrubs and trees here, plus walking trail and indoor house where many events are found. Good for the entire family.

Beautiful & Interesting

By DreamingTravelers |

A beautiful mansion and gardens, great to leisurely walk around and enjoy the views and relaxing atmosphere.

While the mansion was not open we really enjoyed walking around and enjoying the scenery and taking lots of pictures.

This is the sort of place you can return to and enjoy some more. Highly Recommended.

Flowers and plants and plants and flowers

If you are a flower and plant person you will love this place. On a nice day you can enjoy the place and there might even be an art exhibit worth seeing...if you like flowers and plants and plants and flowers. I don't.

The Frelinghuysen Arboretum

By Katie G |

I have visited this Arboretum a couple of times. It is a lovely place for a stroll. You can read more about it and see some pictures from it here on my blog:

https://eyesontheworldgirl.wordpress.com/2015/06/12/the-frelinghuysen-arboretum/

Our organization, The Mid Atlantic Horticultural Therapy Network, held our annual board of directors meeting there.

The property is beautiful. We were lucky enough to arrive at full fall leaf beauty. There were may families roaming the property and the roses were still blooming away.

All seasons - especially Spring, Summer and Autumn

By Carol C |

The springtime is ablaze with glorious flowers; Summer has a calmness and beauty; Autumn a beautiful mellowness - The grounds are spectacular with beautiful walking paths.

ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL, FREE & ABUNDANT PARKING YEAR ROUND

By Janet C |

Frelinghuysen Arboretum is absolutely beautiful, free and has lots of parking year round. No matter what the season, you will be immersed in the natural beauty on these estate grounds and gardens. For the adventuresome, there are walking paths along the stream through the forests, fields and meadows. You can take the mile long wooded pathway to historic Acorn Hall and tour the victorian mansion and gardens there of the Morris County Historic Society. The mansion at the arboretum is not open for tours, but you can bring a picnic blanket and bask on the uncrowded, peaceful lawn. Check for their outdoor concert schedules. Excellent and clean restroom facilities. Many low cost or free programs available for adults and children in the education center. Don't miss the gingerbread house exhibit held each year around early December. You will be surprised by these awesome creations of imagination.

Beautiful

Beautiful, peaceful & NO cost for admission!! It was upward of 90+ degrees today, but there were a lot of shaded spots, and we found a great spot under a gazebo where we relaxed and enjoyed the view & breeze throughout the gardens.

The arboretum is a beautiful spot for a walk. Beautiful gardens and nice place to go for a long, peaceful walk.

Hidden Gem

What a wonderful surprise to find so many flowers and plants right in the middle of a suburban setting. It is truly an oasis!

Beautiful, peaceful!

By Puella202 |

Went here with family for the scarecrow scavenger hunt with my husband, my sister, and 3 year old daughter. The hunt was cute and they gave us some neat prizes.

Beautiful grounds. The foliage was outstanding. Loved the knot garden. We also got up close with two deer that were there. Very family friendly and peaceful. Will be back.

Good place to spend a few hours

By perun99 |

We've been coming to the Arboretum with our kids since they were infants. This is a great place to just stroll leisurely around or let the kids loose and run down the hills. There are hiking trails or paved paths. The gardens by the main building and by the manor are both beautiful to walk around. Come in early spring for the cherry blossoms. In the winter don't miss out on the gingerbread house exhibit. There are many other programs going on almost every weekend, so check their website if you are interested in that sort of thing. The cafe has a small menu, mostly baked goods and hot drinks and it's a little pricey.

Great variety of plants and flowers in a beautiful setting

By asdfabcd |

We love to go here and walk around at different times of year to see the plants and flowers. It gives us different landscaping ideas as well as let's us see varieties you don't see normally.

Ripped off in broad day light!

By s0ccerdad44 |

We stopped that the arboretum today to take a family photo on the way to celebrate our parents 50th Wedding Anniversary. We made the plans only the day before including deciding to ask a photographer to shoot it/make it special and fortunately finding one available on short notice. Mid-shoot we were interrupted by a very nice but truly insensitive and clueless park ranger who informed our photographer that he (meaning we) had to pay a $100 commercial photography fee (for a photo we'd have been just as happy to take in our yard, or take there ourselves with a tripod & timer and my Leica had we known. Of course then everyone was enraged including my aging parents who had no more smiles for the photos. The ranger didn't even have the common sense to wait until we were done. The website for this arboretum does not state that a permit is required or that there is an outrageous fee that no person in their right mind would ever agree to pay for the overgrown, rundown surroundings - nor did any of us see a sign. Not quite Bridge-gate but certainly another NJ government shafting of its taxpayers...

Pleasant Spring Day

By ckatmomi |

We had just visited The Morris Museum and wanted to spend some time outside to enjoy the beautiful day. The arboretum was only a few minutes away and we had a very pleasant time walking in the gardens

Relaxing

By Grateful_Sojourner |

Beautiful in any season. Matilda's Cafe is open on weekends. There are a few easy trails around. The carriage house is worth a peek.

Ok afternoon

By Teresa S |

We spent about an hour there In August with 5 kids. I wouldn't say it's perfect for little kids, but, because it's a small arboretum it was easy to navigate with small kids. Our kids were really interested in reading the signs for all the different trees and flowers. Had the signs been more kid friendly and perhaps the guests not so annoyed with all the little ones running around, I would give this experience a higher rating. But as it was, we didn't feel very welcomed by the grounds or by the other guests. Sad.

Great Treasure in Morristown

By HappyHikerGirl |

I've been to Frelinghusyen with friends, my sister, and alone.

It is beautiful anytime of year. Two weekends ago the leaves were at autumnal peak and there were many families out taking portrait photographs of children.

I love the rose garden and the labyrinth most. The trails are not very secluded, but if you need a quick nature fix they will do.

Autumn at the Arboretum

By MitchPhyllis65 |

You don’t have to drive way up north to see the Autumn Colors; you can see them right here in Morristown at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum. My wife and I spent an enjoyable afternoon exploring and taking pictures of the estate grounds and gardens. We’ve been here years ago in the spring and summer, but this was the first time in the fall. We also found the carriage house very interesting with the different types of carriages. This definitely won’t be our last seasonal visit to the lovely Frelinghuysen Arboretum.

Beautiful location for walks and special events

By LAURIE S |

The property was crawling with gardeners making the grounds so beautiful. One mom had her young daughter in dress for First Communion to take pictures there. Very spread out for leisurely strolls and plants well-marked. Free to the public!

More than just the gardens

By Jermich |

The gardens are beautiful, but this arboretum has much more to offer: guest lectures, workshops, gardening for children and adults, cooking classes, evening meetings of gardening and nature-related associations, display of gingerbread houses in December, spring plant sale, sandwich and dessert shop in summer, and more.

Fun place to visit

By paul k |

Have visited the Frelinghuysen a number of times over the years. Most recently to attend the African Violet show that they host once or twice a year. Have also attended cooking working workshops. Great place to visit in warmer weather to walk the grounds. suggest checking their calendar in order not to miss an event that would interest you. Generally events are free or low cost.

A must for the most amazing gingerbread houses!

By corkyc988 |

The arboretum has been a long time favorite destination for my family. The flowers and trails are great to enjoy and the summertime concerts are nice. But if you are in the area, you must come the first two weeks of December to experience the gingerbread display. It is truly amazing to see the gingerbread creations and a fun way for young and old alike to enjoy a bit of the season.

A tip if you decide to come, go as close to the opening as possible. It does get crowded and you could have quite a wait to get in. It is worth the wait. they charge only a modest fee (this year it was 2.00 per person) to get in and you more than get your money's worth.

Frelinghuysen Arboretum

By Toby T |

Formal rose garden, Progressive garden, Detention basin, kids' vegetable garden, handicapped access garden, braille garden, meadows leading to Whippany River, labyrinth, sun and shade gardens that change with the seasons. Lots of trees, all free. Old horse stables repurposed to hold antique horse-drawn vehicles. Many classes and lectures and tours.

Beautiful!

Gorgeous gardens, designed to catch the eye and allow for relaxation. A bit of romance as well, and the scavenger hunt photo frames were fun!

Gingerbread Wonderland

Visited the Arboretum for the Gingerbread show. Wow, what a nice display. Very interesting and well organized!

Very serene

By Rose W |

Lovely gardens, beautiful walking paths, places to sit and just take it all in. Wish I would have brought a book to just sit and read.

Nature lovers paradise

By Jennifer L |

Lots of different events throughout the year. The grounds are beautiful making it a terrific place to just relax and take in the beautiful plants and flowers. Inside they are always hosting family friendly events like the gingerbread house contests and the orchid shows.

Just go!

By r-j-infinity |

It amazes me that many people who live in the area have never been here before. I think the word Arboretum scares people away. Or maybe they are scared by the name Frelinghuysen. And with both words together, they must be doubly scared. But that's ok. That means the park is usually pleasantly quiet and peaceful.

Quiet oasis in midst of busy suburbs

By Cagrog |

We recently moved within walking distance of the Arboretum and while I had visited many times before the move, it is a treat to be so close and we go often now. I have seen in all seasons and there is always something to please the eye and soothe the soul. The gardens and walks around the open field are great but also check out the paths that wander down into the woods and meadow behind the mansion.

Fall 2025 is coming to Frelinghuysen

By MitchPhyllis65 |

Early Fall is a lovely time to visit the Frelinghuysen. There are still beautiful flowers to see before the Fall Colors come and walk the through the gardens.

Beautiful Gardens, Fun Events and Great Classes

By Regina D |

It's not just trees, plants and flowers. It's so much more. Become a "friend" of the arboretum (FOFA) and get discounts on classes, previews to plant sales and be an early judge for the annual Winter Wonderland Gingerbread Contest. There are classes for gardening, cooking, growing and so much more.
Bring a picnic lunch on a sunny day and spread out the blanket after a nice walk around the grounds.
They are also available for special occasion photos and events.

GREAT PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES, WALKING TRAILS & FREE

By DJMAN5 |

A Definite stop if you are in Morristown area. Very lovely. Free and plenty of free parking.
For us, not worth a separate trip as we are near Longwood gardens in Pa. Nice paths through woodlands. The formal garden were nice with many photo opps. They do offer a map, but we found it a little confusing, Signage could be better. A nice exhibit outside on hot peppers. Plan about 2 hours. Make it part of your day with other local attractions such as Morris museum, Jockey Hollow, town of Morristown. Most areas seemed to be wheelchair accessible. Very nice.

wide range of garden experiences, and FREE!

By PAhomebody |

We stopped at Frelinghuysen Arboretum on a journey home from New York. It is conveniently located off of I-287 (although our GPS placed it on the wrong side of Hanover Ave.!). The garden has many "rooms", from small patio-style enclosures to large areas devoted to specific genres of landscape designs. The plants are well marked so, if you are intrigued by a certain tree or plant, you can read its botanical information. The arboretum is maintained by volunteers who do an excellent job of keeping the beds clear. Many of the walkways are paved, so mobility is good for most people. You can stay close to the main house, or take longer walks around the property. The value is amazing - we have paid to enter gardens much less well presented. If you live in the area, for goodness sake - go for a lovely walk! It's free! If you are a traveler, this is a wonderful place to take a break from the road and relax in beautiful surroundings.

Great nature walk

By George G |

Very nice gardens and landscaping. Very relaxing walk. Visit many times during the summer. Café opened on the weekends has very delicious food. Many different exhibits on the weekends. Flowers and plants during the summer. Gingerbread houses during the Christmas season.

A peaceful retreat

By FFtravels |

A delightful place for a stroll through a woods, and there are a few small gardens to explore as well. Children would enjoy visiting; there isn't a playground, but there are wide open spaces they could run around in. Although all I did was walk around, there is an Education Center there, they offer events and activities, and Matilda's Cafe is open on the weekends through the Fall.

Everything is so clean, there so many environments where one can sit and contemplate the beauty of nature . There are also plenty of walks. Hundreds and hundreds of plants to see.
A lovely coffee shop to have lunch.
And a very nice conference center with all the amenities.
I recommend this arboretum to any nature lover.

A nice place for a Sunday stroll

By MBDinNJ |

We enjoyed walking the trails through the Arboretum - the trails were well marked and well groomed. We also enjoyed walking through the gardens and seeing the beautiful plants and flowers. Lots of good places for picture taking.

Marvelous!

By robertdhuff |

Beautiful displays, well-maintained facilities, ample parking. There were experts of every kind to answer my many questions, and they were tireless.

Gingerbread House

By M2He |

We went to the arboretum for their annual gingerbread festival. It was suggested we go early, prior to the big line forming. This is a good tip, we had a 10 min wait to get in, by the time we left it was almost an hour. The fee was $2 pp. Folks are very creative, and you can choose which project was your favorite!

Great

By Sara |

This was a great find. Went to a wedding in the area, and went there on getaway day. Was before many things were blooming, some things were coming up. You could see how great it would be when things are blooming. All the trees and shrubs were nicely labeled. Nice trails, very peaceful and pleasant. Great display of old horse drawn carriages

Pretty small, but pretty. BAD SMELL at entrance

By Genny164 |

It smelled like something died under the grate at the entrance and as I walked over, I could hear rats. Pressing on up past the barn, the beauty begins. There were still a number of things in bloom, but in general, I wouldn't expect to spend more than 2 hours here. I tried to bike the Patriots Path, but tree roots and missing pavement made this unsafe for my road bike. It is a peaceful and pretty location. There are two main buildings to visit. Themed gardens were also nice. I didn't feel the need to take pictures though. There just wasn't enough to bother. It's something to do for free in the afternoon, but I wouldn't drive hours to get there.

Beautiful grounds and gardens

By jack96 |

We only spent an hour, but there were lots of people hike trails and sitting with friends. Very peaceful place with lots of specimen trees and small special gardens.

Spring Time!

By Love2ReviewThis |

Finally Spring is here and what better way than visiting this "Free" place - Cost - "Free$", Open Space "Free", Parking "Free" and some event or other keeps happening here on weekends!.

Be Mindful of Bees and Park Police - both are in abundance and have right of way :) :) Jokes apart you would feel lovely and secure with them around..

We went there for County Plant Sale and kids loved it. They spent good time running around well maintained lawns and enjoyed picking up and chasing flowers that flew with spring time breeze..

This place might be little tough during peak summer as I couldnt find too many shade trees especially near the lawns..

Overall - well worth the money (yeah yeah - No Money :) )

Enjoy!

Nice place to visit

By Joisy June |

I've been to this for a few of the special shows, lectures etc..Nice local museum - lectures and concerts in the summer.

Wonderful green gem

By Finni709 |

Gorgeous park, a real hidden gem. Wonderful paths and trails for walking. You can often find exhibitions and flower/plant sales here. Lovely cafe on site. Many events throughout the year.

Wonderful day trip

By Netmouse R |

I visit the arboretum once or twice a month on a weekend day when the weather is warm and sunny. The place seems little used on weekdays. First Sunday of a month there is a guided free tour. I also go to fun and interesting events as posted, many free. Many of the events are for children where they can learn and do unusual and seasonal things. The cafe is now open with homemade very tasty sandwiches, cookies and pasties, and more - you can get a bag full and go have a picnic on the large mansion great lawn or sit on a bench in the park or sit at a cafe table.

4 seasons of beauty

By Ed B |

Across from the Morris County Library many pass by this gem. Acres and acres of plantings. Flowering trees in the spring usher in a 2 seasons splashed with color. Activities for children make for a fun day in the great outdoors

Frelinghuysen Arboretum

By AHomeawayfromhome1 |

This attraction is located right in front of the Country Library along Hanover Rd, I believe. I normally frequent the place when I need to get away from everything...bring a book or camera and need to get lost somewhere close and quiet. The garden is well tended... the flora changes with the season. A good place to linger if you have nothing to do. Bring a picnic basket, and food and drink of course after that it's time to snooze. One of my many weaknesses.

Lovely gardens and grounds.

By stevesottl |

This venue is the former estate of the family whose name is used. There are several garden settings, more or less formal plus pleasant walking trails.

Beautiful Photos

By Mariah H |

We had our engagement photo shoot here and it was amazing! Such a beautiful landscape and so many different types of trees and plants to see and learn about.

What a beautiful set of gardens and such a relaxing afternoon

By Justin W |

I visited the Frelinghuysen Gardens after a visit to the Morris Museum and what a wonderful place to just unwind and relax. Most of the estate was closed for a wedding so you could not tour the house or see the gardens behind the mansion.

Still I got to see the Natural Marsh Gardens just north of the house and the gardens around the old stables, which were in full bloom. I also got to tour the gardens just south of the home, which were the gardens of the four seasons. It was a nicely landscaped path through a small woods just off the main lawn.

It is a nice place to just take a breath from a long day of touring and admire all the beautiful plants and flowers and see all the birds and butterflies making their early around the gardens too.

Tulips!

By smw100 |

Beautiful flowers and trees on acres of historic land. The tulip display of many different types was so colorful.

Great collection

By Diplomatok |

This has a great collection of exotic landscape plants on beautiful Morris County Grounds. A good stop for one - three hours of attention.

WAY too much highway noise, really loud to be serene

By NoneNamedYet |

Rose garden is the nicest part. Generally good for walks, but not after a snow.

Jewel of a park

By beatific2017 |

Compact, diverse park with focused gardens utilizing the hills, streams and groves to present an exceptional visit. The rhododendrons and dogwood were beautiful and the Lily of the valley were right on time. The variety of plants and trees guaranteed ongoing enjoyment as the seasons progressed. My only wish would be markers so the plants could be identified. It would be excellent if education could be added to beauty; perhaps a scouting project?

Small but quiet place to enjoy the afternoon

By nyc247 |

As other reviewers point out it is a very small park, however that adds a great deal to its charm. Patriots Path runs through for those looking for a larger hike.

Go when the gardens are in bloom

By ACTA |

I've been here several times and always had a lovely time. Once when I was there, there was a plant show going on indoors and I enjoyed looking at the entries. Otherwise I've enjoyed strolling the grounds and taking pictures of the abundant plant species.

Nice gardens but nothing open on a weekday

By travelUSAoften |

Went on a Tuesday morning and strolled the gardens near the café and the mansion. Unfortunately the buildings were closed and so very little information was available. Spent a nice time relaxing on a bench by the fountain in the garden beside the mansion except a worker was playing a blaring radio by his side while he ate lunch by an arbor at the entrance to the garden for a few minutes. A woman passing by asked if we knew of any restroom facilities and with the buildings closed we could not help her.

A beautiful place to explore

By CarolPNewJersey |

No matter what season, the aboretum is a wonderful place to walk and relax amid huge gardens and winding paths. They also hold excellent workshops, cooking classes, and events. A lovely botanical garden in Morris County, NJ that should not be missed.

Wonderful afternoon

By Jack A |

My wife and I (locals) took our recent Maui visitors to this beautiful park to see some local fauna and flora. We all loved our visit! There be more useful mapping of the property when you arrive, but after awhile, you can get the hang of it to see the lovely plantings throughout the property. Go on a nice day, as no place to hide during rain. It is amazing to see such a beautiful space so close to several highways.

Beautiful

I needed to take some pictures and chose to take them here with a good friend of mine. The grounds are beautiful and it wasn’t too crowded. Can’t wait to come back

Change of scenery

By 620wanderer |

This garden is a welcome surprise and offers young families, couples and anyone who would like the peace and tranquility of this garden. Nothing like the Green in the center of Morristown, this is like a step back in time to the Victorian era when gardens were a special place to go and find the feeling of nature surrounding you.
I believe you can even book the gardens for events. There is a café near the parking lot and benches to sit and take it all in. Of course the season should be considered as each comes with its own personality.

Cute but could offer more

By Lori S |

This place is cute and well kept but I think they should add some extra flowers to the grounds...its more green plants than anything and could use some color. They should also think about keeping the gazebo a little cleaner as well as their was bird droppings everywhere along with random broken pieces of wood.
They do have a cute little cafe that was closed when we went but I didn't not get the ability to enjoy it.
This place is free to the public

year round changes

By Sue S |

The Arboretum has changes to observe year round outside while walking or driving through. Friends of the Arboretum have plant sales, lectures, gingerbread house contests, etc. Pathways to Morris County is a Park Commission brochure that is also online. It lists their programs and others in Morris County.

The place is growing on me...

By Beth E |

When I first had occasion to come here, I kept comparing it to the arboretum in my last neighborhood in the Midwest. Frelinghuysen will never compare favorably to it but that really isn't a fair comparison. I have come to realize, what they do, they do well. Recently went to a lecture on wildflowers and attended a Sunday appetizers preparation event. Have also been on one of the bus tours to a series of NY gardens and to the Philly Flower show. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful. The events are well run, whether local or by bus. Plant sales are good. All in all, I recommend membership and taking advantage of the arb offerings.

Nice park, free to enter

By Melanie T |

Nice park with plenty of parking. At least it was on July 4th at around 11:30. Maybe everyone was away, so I’m not sure how crowded it normally gets but the arboretum was pretty much empty that day. There are some easy (unpacked) trails with plenty of benches.

Free to enter!

Pick a day with good weather and get their before all the parking fills up. Keep your kids under control

Garden of your dreams

It is truly the way my garden looks in my dreams. The staff is so helpful. There are many different programs that are held each year. It is a treasure.

Wonderful place for a gentle or athletic walk among gardens and trees

By Sandra U |

The Arboretum is a fantastic place to visit for a wonderful walk in nature. There are wheelchair-friendly paths and blind-friendly paths and moderately aggressive hiking paths for the more athletic. The rose gardens are lovely. Around every corner you will find a new specialty garden, including one for ferns. There are ponds with small fountains and benches to sit and read. There is a small, informal coffee shop that sells snacks and sandwiches on thursday to sunday. Overall a delightful place to visit. The trees are amazing, with tremendous variety. Occasionally there are wine tastings or ghost tours at the big mansion, there are many kid-friendly activities, gingerbread houses and small gardens that kids can plant and care for themselves.

I always love coming here - any time of the year !

By jansjourneys |

Long ago when they had a wonderful gift shop here, I volunteered and worked in it. Too bad they didn't open Matilda's in the other building and keep the gift shop, but oh well.
Went here early just to take a little walk and look at what is in bloom. A woman saw me reading a book for a few minutes and said 'oh, you just come to read?' I said 'I like to come here for various reasons all year round. And that is so true. Always something happening or going to and even in winter this place is gorgeous on a sunny day !

Peaceful

A real gem in all seasons
They have events going on in the center year round. The cafe is open on the weekends

Beautiful garden and property

By jeff g |

I discovered this place in 2019 and wanted to go back in the spring, so glad I did! The flowering trees and all the daffodils were beautiful! Definitely a nice place for a walk to quiet place to sit and look at all the beauty.

Absolutely love this place

By Stnegrao |

I used to live close to the arboretum so we went there very often. It is a great space where the kids can run freely. Bring a picnic basket with you and enjoy a nice shade under one of the trees that surrounds the big well maintained field. The mansion is very beautiful. The kids also loved the flower gardens and the little water fixtures that you find in the property.

Crabby staff

We arrived close to closing of the office and the lady was quite rude and off putting when I asked a question.

Nice Gardens

Took my grandparents here to hang out in the shade and look at the gardens. It is a really beautiful place and it's handicap accessible, which is nice.

Great resource for plant lovers

By MCNICE9 |

I have been member of the Arboretum for many years. I recently extended the membership to my family so that everyone enjoys the benefits. The Arboretum is not only a peaceful and beautiful retreat. It also offers courses and sponsors horticultural activities that are of great value to ornamental plant or edible plant growers. The Arboretum also open their doors to other societies, sush as the New jersey Mycological Society. Their kitchen hosts several cooking demonstrations throughout the year. Our family visited Matilda Cafe in early Spring and found great sandwishes, soups and desert choices.

I am lucky I live close enough to visit this place often. If you are a nature lover this place is for you! Acres of beautifully manicured land and gardens. Every time I visit I want to run to the garden store and buy 100 plants. Great walking/hiking trails, an educational center and just stunning landscapes. You can join Friends if Frelinghuysen Arboretum and enjoy discounted classes and lectures. Pictures were from the Hosta show.

The annual Gingerbread House exhibit

By unicorn3 |

Every year our family returns to see the annual Gingerbread House exhibit. It's terrific! Kids of all ages, adults, groups all make gingerbread creations that are remarkably creative. The cost is only $2 to enter, and if you'll pardon the cliche, it really is "fun for all ages." I'm always amazed at what people can make out of candy + imagination!

Beautiful gardens

I've been going to this arboretum for nearly 20 years. More gardens and landscaping are a continuing surprise.

Very Nice... For 2 hours at most

By ebatiz40 |

Visited in July for the first time staff was very helpful providing a map to get around and some suggestions. Also recommend you visit the cafe nothing special on the coffee but nice setting outside. I would plan about 2 hours... If you take it slow.

go here a lot.
