The drive on Red Rock Scenic Byway is mesmerizing. The entire drive is jaw dropping. No picture could ever do these views justice. This drive is a must when in Sedona.

No choice but to drive here. After leaving the state park. Very great sights amazing photos. There’s not too much to say about a great highway

By far this is truly the most scenic road we have traveled and we've been driving for over a month from Florida through to Texas and now Arizona. This is a must see for all Americans to see how magnificent our country. truly is.

Took an mid morning drive from Sedona. Love views of Courthouse Rock and Bell Rock. We're a bit too old for the hiking scene but took some great pictures.

Staying in Cottonwood we were not sure where to start on the Byway and what to see along the way but headed toward Jerome. We continued and stopped at the Red Rock Ranger Visitor Center and saw our first vista of Bell Rock, Castle Rock, Courthouse Butte, Lee Mountain...then headed to Chapel of the Holy Cross. Well worth the stop. Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village unfortunately was so crowded we could not find parking so can't review that. On to the Sedona Airport Scenic Lookout and stopped after for a drink at Sky Ranch Lodge on their veranda. Friendly and a wonderful atmosphere. Well worth the time to enjoy the scenery around every corner.

We drove this route as we left Sedona and headed towards Mesa. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking! We stopped at several of the scenic spots and took it all in. Definitely recommend this route!

You can not avoid traveling this route. Beautiful vistas to stop at and take some photos. Photos dont do the place justice!

This is a beautiful drive with lots of incredible rock formations. Along the way there are a lot of places to stop and get out for a closer look. We took several short hikes at these stops. We found a parking place at each spot but it is a Monday in fall so I imagine parking is pretty competitive on weekends.

Sedona is one of the most beautiful places on earth. It is like something from another world. The Red Rock Scenic Byway is absolutely spectacular - just pull off, buy your day pass, and enjoy the land!

You don’t have to be hikers to enjoy the area. The drives are spectacular with many areas to stop along the way to have a better view.

I don't even enjoy driving, but my God.... These vistas make me want to splurge on a fancy convertible!

A very nice scenic byway and good option for reaching I-17 south to PHX or north to Flagstaff. Many well situated turnouts for photos and short hiking trails. USFS has maintained the areas well.

Exceptional views of the vibrant red rock formations make this an enjoyable drive ... for awhile, anyway (until hitting the Oak Creek shopping center (where Clarks is) and then it is a mighty slow slog for the next hour or so as the traffic schlepps along at an amazingly, exceedingly slow speed ("speed" seems to be an oxymoron here). Sedona's popularity apparently knows no bounds. And so we all plod along. That is the price to be paid for seeking out this treasure which apparently everyone else on planet earth has "discovered."

This is a great scenic route! Definitely recommend. There were great views of the surrounding areas. Very beautiful place and worth the drive.

It's like driving into a postcard. Get your camera ready. Many spots to pull over and take in the vistas. A must see.

At the right time of day (right around sunset) This drive is spectacularly breathtaking. If you go during nicer weather with the windows down and just cruising this road, it takes you back to a simpler times and just freezes time for that time.

Driving into Sedona, the views are amazing! We drove this road many times while were there. Red rocks everywhere.

Beautiful scenery and when we were there ( February), the roads were pretty empty until you get into Sedona. Sedona's landscaping is breathtaking but the city itself is loaded with tourists even in February.

This stretch of road is awesome...windy, twisty but views of everything around every corner are so awesome.

This road is long and paved and the landscape is beautiful! This is ideal for a convertible car. We visited on October and the weather was perfect! The Red Rock road gives you access to the parking areas for the Cathedral butte, the Bell rock, and the Courthouse.

The scenic views are absolutely gorgeous around this road, definitely one of the most amazing places to go in arizona. My family lives close so we’d been planning the trip and it was well worth it!
If you’re going to sedona, make sure you go through this road I wouldn’t want you to miss it!

went around a corner and the mountains were straight ahead of me. Spectacular and the parking lot was full so could not stay for long

Must see. Make this drive from South of Sedona to Flagstaff. Most of the amazing views are just south of Sedona. Traffic was very slow the day we went but just gives you more time to take in the views. Stop at all the marked viewing points.

This short drive from Sedona to I-17 provide beautiful views of Bell Rock and the Rock Chapel. The scenery is most impressive in the first few minutes south to Oak Creek and not so much on the rest of the drive to I-17. The return trip north was a disaster on a Saturday. There were no accidents, just horrible traffic trying to get into Sedona because people don’t know how to use the roundabout’s in Sedona.

Simply amazing red rock scenery a few hundred yards from the highway. We drove back and forth from Sedona and Oak Creek and it always was magical.

For someone who has never seen the Sedona red rocks before you will be blown away! The 179 highway leading into Sedona has some of the best views.

We only had a little time to see Sedona, so we chose to drive down from Flagstaff via rte. 89 (a scenic drive in itself) and connect with 179. The byway is about 15 miles long and cuts right through Sedona center. There’s a lot of commerce in a couple of sections, but the views of the red rocks beyond are stunning. For free entertainment, you can’t beat it. I recommend traversing both ways to get the full view.

Very scenic drive and a great way to see the area, not much traffic when we were there January 2021, places to stop and take pictures, and it is just a great drive!

The drive in is just beautiful. Both times we drove this to Sedona, we stop to take lots of pictures.

Absolutely gorgeous scenery but on Friday 13 November in the afternoon, there was no way to pull off into the different lots for pictures or hiking. These were packed with many cars parking illegally. I had to drop off my husband so he could take some pictures and then loop around to pick him back up. There was a lot of traffic from Rt 17 going into Sedona which took us forever. Sedona itself was packed, lot of traffic, restaurants full with people waiting in small confined spaces inside, etc. Maybe it was just the weekend and it would be different during the week, but there are so many other gorgeous places in the southwest so not sure we'll bother going back here.

We really enjoyed taking this scenic drive. The views are absolutely breathtaking. We did this on a Wednesday afternoon and it wasn’t busy at all.

This is a great drive where every turn reveals another dramatic vista - the rocks are vibrantly colored and the landscapes and spires are majestic. We also stopped at the Chapel of the Holy Cross for a prayer and a view.
The city of Sedona is also worth a stop (a bit touristy, but lots of restaurants, cafes), etc.

This road is simply beautiful. Sedona is the most beautiful spot in the whole USA, and there is so much to do and see there.

Ranger Station was closed, but you get some fantastic previews of the Red Rock area from the parking lot.

Nice drive to orient yourself to the sites. Can be vey crowded in the middle of the day and hard to find a parking space if you want to hike

Every curve gives you a greater view than the one you previously had. So glad my husband was driving so I could take it all in!

Everyone told us for years that Sedona is gorgeous..stunning...amazing. Totally undersold. Just jaw-dropping!

If you are near Sedona or Flagstaff, the drive is worth the time. We came northbound from Phoenix, and stopped first at the ranger station visitors center. The views there are great and good for pictures. We stopped in the late afternoon, and the rocks were even more red in the setting sun. The Chapel of the Holy Cross is another good view for pictures. Advice-go to top of hill at the chapel. There is a ramp up to the chapel.

I've been coming to Sedona for close to 20 years; shocked at the crowds....on a random April weekend. Some trail heads are closed and others are seemingly always full with a line of cars ready to pounce - a new sport "parking spot vulching" . The city of Sedona has instituted a park and ride shuttle system to better handle the crowds. I did not use the shuttle so I can't review but that said, this adds more time and hassle to your hike

The views along this route are simply amazing! I have driven this at least 3 times and every time I am blown away by the beauty and magnificence!
Parking along the route is a bit difficult as the lots are small - we just stopped at various points until we found one and then hiked the trails that were there.
This scenic byway is a MUST SEE!

The views along the byway were absolutely beautiful. When coming from the south, you may wonder what all the talk is about. But after. couple miles, you enter the valley with the rock outcrops and formations ahead. Incredible off in the distance, then you drive through the middle of the rocks with plenty of stopping points for photos.

Great views can be a bit of traffic but at least the views are terrific while waiting!!! I’d suggest going early or late to see the difference of the shadows

Our drive through Sedona to see the red rocks was something we've wanted to do for years. It did not disppaoint.

Well worth the drive! I drove most of the byway on my drive into Sedona from Phoenix. It's like entering another world. The scenery is other-worldly and has a number of stops for viewing and hiking. I drove sections of it a number of times on my stay in Sedona. Don't miss it!

We loved driving the Red Rock Scenic Byway while visiting Sedona. So many awesome along this beautiful road.

If you're headed to Sedona, make sure you take this route! There were breathtaking views everywhere we looked!

If you have a car, this drive is a must. Beautiful scenery. I actually did it a couple times, I enjoyed it so much

This is a spectacular drive, do not miss it when you are in the area.
Unforgettable in winter with snowy peaks, and the rest of the year with much greenry and fluffy clouds for a backdrop. If your lucky you can catch a Monsoon followed by a rainbow or two!

This is our fifth time visiting Sedona and the scenic byway never gets old. It is always breathtakingly beautiful.

Perhaps one of the most breathtaking vistas on earth. These structures, sculpted by God for millennia, should be on everyone’s bucket list.

You won't miss a thing. There are plenty of photo op's while you are stuck in traffic from Oak Creek Village to the junction with 89A. Drink the scenery in and try to forget about the gas fumes from all those cars (ours, too) all around.
Sedona is a special place. EVERYONE on planet earth thinks so, too. And I believe all of them are making their pilgrimage here at the same time. It is painful. And gas is super expensive now. Nothing can be done. Hunker down and join the queue to that precious vortex center of the Southwest.
If possible, avoid traveling here on weekends or any day near the weekend. Midweek is good.
But like the heading goes for this review, "Red Rock Scenic Byway SR179" it is indeed scenic and a benefit of driving at a snail's pace is you get to see it all!
Heads up: the traffic will snake, crawl, and slither down to the junction with 89A and there isn't a single thing anyone can do about it. Sedona calls and we all answer. Too bad it all happens at the same time.

Calyn, my daughter, and I loved this drive! Snow on the mountains and the sunshine in the sky. Beautiful visuals of Red Rock landscape!

simply beautiful and awesome! drive was easy with the hard part trying to see all the beauty it offered. Despite the rain we witnessed the formations that made this drive awesome. I would suggest taking the upper and lower drive at least once every day there.

Sedona is an interesting little town that is surrounded by some of the most beautiful landscape that you will EVER see--by air and by land. This drive is nothing short of spectacular. The vistas and the "close up" views are just plain wonderful--mesmerizing. The whole area is a hikers paradise. As a topper, the weather is typically beautiful as well.
I absolutely recommend that you get up to the airport mesa (which has some nice views and a good restaurant), and take the helicopter ride--you will not forget it! If you think the drive is special.....

Don’t miss this when visiting Sedona! Lovely drive with several stopping points to get out and admire the scenery and take pictures.

If you are traveling to Sedona from Phoenix and want to see fabulous views, then take the 17 to the 179. You will see so many beautiful red rock formations like Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock, and so many more. There are about 8 roundabouts on this route. They can be congested the closer you get to Sedona. The other option is to take the 260 through Cottonwood. You will avoid all of the traffic congestion, but the views are not as spectacular.

Such a breathtaking view during the entire stretch and it never got old during our stay in Sedona. The drive on Red Rock Scenic Byway is mesmerizing. The entire drive is jaw dropping. No picture could ever do these views justice. This drive is a must when in Sedona.

We enjoyed a leisurely drive along this winding road. There are multiple scenic turn out where you can stop and take in the views. We noticed the most unusual house high on a cliff, never seen anything like it!

Amazing views and scenery, so worth the time to take this route, Loved every minute. Highly recommend.

One of America's most gorgeous drives. Canyons and red rocks and mountains and forest. Nice road, not too much traffic.

This was a perfect trip for us because we have an elderly mother with us and needed something that we could drive to and still see lots of beautiful places. Lots of great pull-outs and stops to see every sight. This is a must-do!

I am a native West Virginian, so I know scenic drives. I wish I had kept track of how many times I said, "wow, beautiful or amazing".
Good road, but filled with visual distractions.

the views---get your camera ready. Get out and hike the trails. Spectacular! Watch the sunset from outside as it goes down with the red rocks behind it. Stunning

We took a drive from Phoenix to Red Rock, it was just under 2 hours. Really nice scenic route to enjoy fantastic scenery, wild life, and amazing views.

Stunningly beautiful each and every moment. Take your time to soak in nature’s breathtaking views. Don’t pass this up!

Right next to civilization and so easily accessible, the highway provides spectacular views of gorgeous orange cliffs and easy access to many miles of hiking opportunities for all levels. I couldn't stop taking pictures while I was there, and I had been there several times previously. The month of February seemed to be ideal, since it was neither too hot nor too cold to enjoy. We did a lot of hiking during our two days while staying in the area. Our first hike was on the Courthouse Trail, which was about 3.6 miles long. We followed that up with a hike around the Bell Rock Trail. This was actually our favorite hiking area, but it does get to be crowded, so visit early in the morning to get a parking place. We also did some hikes in the West Sedona area. Every hike is different, and there is something spectacular on every hike. Even if you have small children or are with someone who is handicapped, the drive alone is well worth doing.

This iconic drive is simply beautiful! We traveled in March and the landscape of red rock and rolling hills is a sight to remember.

This short drive is best taken if there aren't many other people on the road. Coming from Rt 17 towards the center of Sedona, the various rock vistas come into view at different times during the drive, and around each curve. The drive is best taken late in the day or early in the morning on a clear day, with the sun hitting the red rocks just right. Best free thing to do in Sedona!

Don't miss this great scenery all around Sedona. It is really a beautiful place to hike, jeep and take Balloon or helicopter. Can't go wrong.

Several pull-out parking areas allow you to take photographs of the iconic features of this scenic area. Be aware, there will be many other people doing the same thing.

Wow, every day was an adventure. Beautiful red rocks and blue skies. CLearly marked trailheads for parking the car. Warning: Sedona has been experiencing WAY more visitors since COVID-19 began — there are no limitations on cars coming in. Trailhead lots are small. When we visited in Mid-April, there was no shuttle service. So you had to wait to get a parking spot or leave a trailhead and try a different one. Do NOT park on private property. Be a good guest.

Driving to Sedona you cannot avoid the beauty & awe of God. The sun changes the scenery so often you can't take pictures fast enough.

Honestly, the scenery here is so lovely. As you drive into Sedona, Bell Rock is right in front of you surrounded by so many other gorgeous red rock mountains. Worth it.

We traveled this road in February and thought it was incredible, cannot imagine how gorgeous it will be when things flower. Plenty of pull offs to take it all in and also take pictures. Make sure you stop at the Ranger Station. They know everything, have maps, suggestions, even a video you can watch.

Get your favorite music on and do your self a favor and ask someone else to drive you so you can just take it all in. Amazing vistas and views. Some of Mother Natures finest!

This is my preferred route when driving to and from Sedona/Tucson. Something about this route just sets the stage for what is to come on your getaway to Sedona as well as the last "Ahh's" when leaving Sedona. This route is heavily traveled and can get busy.

One of the more beautiful and memorable road trips. Did the route from North to South and it did not disappoint.

We could not hike any trails in Sedona due to forest fires, but at least got to drive down the scenic byway to see all the beautiful landscapes.

Route 179 is awesome. Just get in your car and go as far as you want. Be sure to turn off for the Chapel. You won't regret it.

Breathtaking views and the highway is good too! Beautiful red rocks that jut heavenward out of the ground!

A great quick drive to see amazing rock views almost 360 degrees no matter where you look. A few pull off places to stop and view.

It's too much a vital transportation artery to be enjoyable as a casual drive, and it seems about half the drivers don't quite understand either roundabouts or yield signs or both. It can be confusing dealing with them. My personal suggestion is to pretend you are merging onto a large highway--use the yield sign the same way. Ever notice the yield sign right before you merge onto a highway? Ever come to a complete stop where the sign is located (right before you merge)? OK! In other words, don't stop unless you must in order to allow traffic to clear. Again, keep going if you can fit into the existing traffic into which you are merging. Think "merge with the going flow...fit right in...exit smoothly". It can help to NOT look at other drivers...but DO look at their front tires to see if they are staying in the roundabout (which is the ONLY time you stop).

Such a breathtaking view during the entire stretch and it never got old during our weeklong stay in Sedona.

Drove through this scenic route and thought it was just AMAZING! So glad we took this route! The only negative was there seems to be a lot of traffic once you hit the town a lot of traffic circles.

There is nothing like the Sedona area. Absolutely majestic view of beautiful red rocks.I have been there 4 times and each time is magical. The roads are well paved and everything is well cared for. One of my favorite towns is Carefree - it is so pretty with shops and restaurants.

The drive is just mind blowing! I was in awe the entire trip. I stopped a couple of times for pictures and videos

This drive is incredible. Get a map of the area so you know what formations you are looking at. Stop whenever you can because the views are all unique.

This is a beautiful drive. But if it's a high holiday season, the road will back up from downtown Sedona for up to 3 miles towards Cathedral Rock -- to a near standstill. Go early morning when the morning sun is lighting up the mountains. By noon, the traffic will ruin the drive. It's a busy place.

Really cool scenic highway with plenty of places to eat , shop , drink or whatever- Try the Hudson restaurant , great views!

How can such naturally occurring magnificence get rated any less than 5? The canyons and formations are stunning. There many gradations in texture and texture are textbooks on billions of years of geology and climate. The way that they change colors and angles according to sunlight and moonlight and clouds must be seen to truly appreciate.
I wish that there were a few turnoffs so people could stop and get photos or just silently gaze at the wonders before them instead of being forced to just drive by. Perhaps the narrow roads would not support it? The only downside to this trip is that most of roads were narrow and many portions of them were in need of repair. The repair work being done was during peak travel hours, causing congestion and/or detours away from the red rocks. That was the reason for 4 stars instead of 5.

If you have not seen the red rocks in Sedona, then you absolutely must take this route. It is one of the most scenic drives you will ever encounter, especially in the state of Arizona.

Driving from West Sedona heading North on 89A was a treat. We don't even mind having a bit of traffic jam since it offered an opportunity to take pictures and for the driver to enjoy tbe scenery as well. Highly recommended.

This is a nice drive with some easy hikes (and some crowded) along the way. We stopped to hike Bell Rock. We parked across the highway at Yavapai because the main Bell Rock Trailhead was full. It was an easy walk to the trailhead. The beginning of the trail is very clearly marked. If you want to hike higher, it becomes a bit tricker. We hiked a little way up and the views and area was nice. Even though parking was full, it wasn't crowded on the trail.

This is a must do on your Sedona itinerary. Plenty of places to stop and take it all in. Cars can get a little impatient though following behind.

We drove in to Sedona this way. The drive is beautiful. We've heard not to do this on a friday afternoon though.

Visit jerome and Sedona in Arizona. Fantastic food and the most magnificent vistas of red rock country. Need a few days to enjoy countless hiking trails

One of the most beautiful roads in the US I would imagine. Just nature at it's best and a must must must see !

Very scenic drive with plenty of stops for viewpoints and/or hiking. You can see plenty of the rock formations on the drive alone

Amazing rock formations. Took this Byway SR 179 on the way from Cortez, Co. It was a breathtaking, amazing scenic drive.

absolutely stunning scenery- recommend doing in both directions and at different times of day to get the different lighting; stop at the scenic overviews, too

Without a doubt Sedona is majestic! The only drawback now is the long lines of traffic, nothing compared to 10 plus years ago.

Breath taking with plenty of side shoots (non obtrusive) to get a pristine view of the area! So well worth the trip ... bring a camera!!!

I don't know whose idea it was to put a round-a-bout at every intersection from Sedona to Highway 17 but they make the trip miserable. The scenery is good.

Amazing views! It's so beautiful. The scenic byway is surrounded by beautiful mountain formations. A must do!

The views on this road are some of best in the world - there are several scenic view lookouts you can drive out in. You can fly drones here.

The red rocks are amazing and a great drive to view them. BUT be careful since one of your is driving and other passengers are making ooh, ahh noises. The road is a slower speed and with the traffic circles you do have to watch out for pedestrians in the walk ways.

This is a must do if you’re in the area. The drive is not very long, yet you get to see beautiful rock formations. There’s also many trails, if you like hiking.

It is a great drive to see many of the rocks without hiking. You can see Courthouse, Bell and other rock formations. Very scenic. The nature is very awe inspiring. There are places to pull off and take in the views.

We drove thru this by way for 3 hours and every turn and curve was amazing. Wish there would be shelters on the side of the road

Beautiful drive in the red rocks..we stopped several times to take photos and do a bit of browsing at several arts and craft shows.

Such amazing views. The highway has pull offs and totally unobstructed views of this beautiful country

great bypass from Sedona, AZ. take your time and enjoy the szenary. stop at the any sights for a hike. bring plenty of water! MeuterMedia

Driving 179 into or from Sedona provides some spectaular scenes of the red rock country that Sedona is famous for. There are a number of stop off points with limited parking and trails that go from the car park. Be sure to pay your Red Rock Pass, using the machines avaialble although we found one that did not print the pass. Beautiful scenery unlike anywhere else.

A drive to Sedona just to see the red rocks are worth a day trip. If you are in the Phoenix area take the 2 hr trip up to see the rocks and eat at some great restaurants.

The drive is one of the prettiest I've seen and I've done a ton recently. The traffic and business of the actual town even during Covid (yes, I'm fully vaccinated and wore masks) wasn't my style but the scenery makes up for it. If a trippy laid back town of healing crystals and candle stores is your thing you'll be in heaven, otherwise just appreciate the art and scenery.

the whole town of sedona is basically endless photo ops and incredible views. well worth the drive..

Stellar scenery! You really must do this drive. Traffic is heavy, but you enjoy the time to see all the scenery.

SR179 is the main road between the Village of Oak Creek and Sedona. The views are amazing and it links several of the main hiking trail heads as well as the church in the red rocks.. But on weekends, it can get really crowded. Go early or go late.

Easy drive. Don’t get in a hurry, with all the round a bouts it makes you slow down! The colors are amazing. Pictures do not do justice to what you see.

Blown-away with the beauty of Sedona!! The second we arrived, we were in awe of the red rock around us. There are so many great places to stop and view different areas, walking paths and some great hiking to be had. Just driving through Sedona was amazing though. A must drive if that is all you have time for. The area has so many vacation options though. Hotels and restaurants and shopping for everyone, along with pure beauty and plenty of adventure. We spent 2 days in Sedona and could have spent more. Get this on your list and adventure on!

What a beautiful sight driving into the valley in the sunshine. The colors seem to jump out of the rock formations Truly incredible natural beauty.

We drove through at sunset and watched the light change every few minutes on the gorgeous red rocks. Lots of places to pull off for a photo. It’s a great chance to see the rocks without having to hike, so it’s great for a wider range of ability levels.

The beauty and the homes along the route added to the Interest the crew. Some homes are very remote!
Drove this after swimming at Crescent Moon.

unparalleled beauty. from I-17 , to 179 and on to 89a... the views are endless. A nice small town haven in a gorgeous setting, red rocks galore and sunsets to die for!

We rented a Polaris slingshot for a couple hours and toured the red river highway. It was so relaxing. Everywhere you turned to look was beautiful.

Worth the time to stop and enjoy the scenery. Make sure you can stop and watch the sunset. Several pull overs to see the view.

What an amazing way to reach the beautiful town of Sedona. I highly recommend you take the time to drive this Scenic Byway!!

Unbelievable views. Jaw dropping. I don't know how drivers stay on the road when it comes into view. There is a God

Easy and accessible to tour on your own, SR 179 runs directly out of Sedona for an easy day trip. Don't miss Chapel of the Holy Cross, then choose from a number of amazing parks for a hike that can be as easy or as hard as you want. Stop in Oak Creek for lunch, an ice cream or a taste of AZ wines at the local wine bar.

The views all around are breathtaking and one gets to capture the essence of the red rocks. Beautiful.

Spectacular scenery. Some good stopping places for photos. Joseph is a great looking small town to visit.

This is a must do, you’ll get fantastic views of probably 70% of Sedona’s most famous rock formations. I believe good enough views that you can then prioritize your hikes towards other attractions (eg Devil’s Bridge, soldiers pass)

The beautiful red rocks provide some of the most breathtaking and spectacular views. I am well traveled and Sedona is my favorite spot for beauty.

Rt 179 was just beautiful passing Bell rock and other famous mountains near Sedona. Road is in good condition and we drove from camp verde to sedona. Great scenery for picture taking

The scenic byway is only 7.5 miles one way and definitely a must do when in Sedona. The rock formations are impressive! The colors are beautiful.

The first time driving this feels like you are on another planet or living in a Star Wars movie. It's so cool and different! There are hiking trails and scenic pull offs along the way but be warned that if an accident happens it's very easy to end up stuck sitting on this stretch also, at least there are the views!

Amazingly beautiful. One of those rare things that makes time standstill as you enjoy the natural beauty.

This was a peaceful drive through some of the most beautiful scenery that we have seen thus far on our anniversary trip In the area. After finishing a few days of hiking and side-by-side riding in Sedona, Arizona we continued on to the skywalk overlooking the Grand Canyon.

You can drive the length of the scenic byway in half a day but allow more time to stop at the scenic pull-offs or stroll a short trail. It is breath taking and you will want to take lots of pictures. Most pull offs have a trail head in the parking lot so alot of the parking lots are full and you can drive around waiting for someone to leave or hit the next pull off. We were there in October and it was still busy but not crowded.

Coming from the east coast, the geography of this area blew me away. Kept waiting for pterodactyls to fly behind the Red Rocks and Fred Flintstone to pass me on the road. Pretty cool drive!

We drove this ourselves,,,, no need to pay for a tour. Lots of places to take beautiful photos. Especially at sunset.

Stunning views as you travel toward Sedona. Traffic can be a bit heavy, but the roundabouts keep everything moving at a reasonable pace. Beautiful drive to start your red rock vacation in Sedona!

A definite if you are in the Sedona area. You can either take a tour or you can actually drive it yourself for free. If you are going to do any of the trails, then you will need a pass. It is $5 for the day. We had no trouble following the self guided directions online. The red rocks are stunning. We actually did the loop twice.

Not overly busy, but stunning views while you drive. Easy to see road signs to make your way to your destination.

Instead of driving back the way we came into Sedona we decided to drive the 179. Beautiful drive back to our rig.

If you are not up to hiking the trails, drive along and see the beauty of Sedona. A few trails off the byway also.

the views while driving on Red Rock Scenic Byway are just beautiful and breathtaking! There were not enough pull off spots to snap all the shots i wanted!

We were on a weeklong road trip through Arizona, primarily hitting the national parks and national monuments, but we had so many people recommend Sedona and the Red Rocks Scenic Byway that we knew we had to adjust our schedule and go. We were so glad we did.
What an awesome way to spend an afternoon, just driving through the red rocks, stopping to take photos along the way. We did make a stop at the Chapel of the Holy Cross, which was stunning, and grabbed lunch and did some shopping in the cute uptown district.
Our only regret is that it was a mostly gray and rainy day--I can only imagine how much more stunning those red rock vortexes would've been against a clear blue sky!

Scenic roadway approaching Sedona from the south. There are a number of hiking trail parking lots that are also good locations for picture taking.

Jaw dropping beauty, truly incredible. You just won’t believe your eyes. If you go all the way to Arizona and miss this drive you need to go back!

Wow is about all I can say! Photos do not do this area justice. We drove from Cornville into Sedona, stopping a the trailheads / scenic overlooks. Parking was a bit tough at some spots, I would recommend taking the Sedona Shuttle to avoid the parking dilemma if you are hiking. We were able to use our National Park Pass for the parking pass / usage fee.

For the price of gas, you'll feel like you're in a live version of Cars. In fact, we played the theme to Cars while we were driving the byway. It's just gorgeous. Highly recommend that you do this at approaching sundown.

This is a great scenic road - with great access to many trail heads.
The best part of the drive is from South Sedona - called the Village of Oak Creek, north to "Uptown Sedona". At each end you will find places to eat and shops. Uptown will have the highest concentration of shops.
As for the trail heads, all the parking lots for the trails will charge a $5 parking fee which you pay at the lot. But the hikes and views are definitely worth it. I'd suggest getting a visitors map to know what trail head you want to access before hand.
If you are close to Sedona and are wondering if it is worth taking a detour to visit for a day - or partial day, the answer is yes!

This drive on your approach to a visit to Sedona sets the stage for a glorious trip. The rock formations are unbelievable. We stopped at the ranger station around 330 pm and got a helpful orientation and map which helped us use the first two hours of our visit most productivity. Nice video too which highlights all of the wildlife in the area.

Well laid out with many pull outs and parking areas. Wonderful! It is no wonder this is on top of everyones lists.

We loved seeing all the red rocks but as you enter Sedona, we wanted more turnouts on the side of the road to take pictures. No shoulders either.

Spent five days in Sedona and drove all parts of this road. Every angle shows a different formation. Stunning views make it hard to keep your eyes on the road!

We created our own driving tour of the area, stopping along the way. This is a remarkable area with beautiful scenery.

What a beautiful journey through! Loved the scenery after coming off the highway. So much to look at. The colors are so beautiful.

While driving up to Sedona from Phoenix where we flew into we saw a lot of cactus, hills, a very sparse landscape until we turned off onto Hwy. 179...The Red Rock Scenic Byway...
Once we were on the Byway...the landscape changed dramatically. The mountains turned into beautiful shades of red rock formations that just amaze you with their colors and beauty.
There are ample places to stop, admire and photograph the "Red Rocks"....This is one drive that you do not want to rush when visiting Sedona....A must visit for anyone looking to enjoy a gorgeous landscape.

Our experience and photo opportunities were best when the sun was lower and the red color and releif of the cliffs / buttes were best

You want to stop so often you almost should walk this highway - but you can not. Have your “camera” ready but driver keep your eyes on the road.

just beautiful, a must see. The drive along Hwy 179 allows you to see many of the wonderful rock formations.

Wow! Stunning views as we entered Sedona and drove around surrounding areas. There was a bit of traffic but you are surrounded by such beauty that you don’t even mind. The brilliance of the Red seemed to be best in the morning, but it is really beautiful anytime. Just take a drive and admire the red rocks.

There really isn’t a bad view anywhere in Sedona. The jaw-dropping views are terrific. We did enjoy driving and getting out to marvel along this Scenic Byway.

Took the Red Rock Loop road into the park. Hiked a couple miles, very easy. Beautiful scenery and the park staff were happy to explain things and make our visit enjoyable.

This drive is gorgeous. I highly recommend. There are lots of roundabouts but the traffic flows nicely. It is a main road in Sedona.

This stretch of road is one of the most beautiful in the entire county. It is hard to put into words, especially if you are unfamiliar with the beauty of the red rocks of the southwest. It is a *must* do.

I took Red Rock Scenic Byway toward Sedona on as a last minute decision on my way from Phoenix to Flagstaff. I was rewarded almost immediately by one of the most impressive drives I’ve ever seen! The red rock mesas and pinnacles were staggering in their size and color. I stopped by the ranger station and got a trail and road map for the area. It was very helpful for planning as the area is vast. I definitely recommend getting off the interstate for this drive!

Always amazing how quickly the terrain goes from green and brown to green and red. The views are gorgeous and there are so many hiking trails to choose from, you never have to do the same one twice.

The scenery was amazing. The red and bronze rock formations were each unique and beautiful. It was rough to get parking spots, so I paused and snapped many wonderful shots. Next time I will take a tour bus. I would love to return.

Scenic byway runs from Oak Creek to Sedona. You'll be in awe of the red rock structures. Less in awe of the multiple roundabouts.

Given the extraordinary Summer heat, anything to explore by driving around Sedona is a treat. So is the Red Rock Byway

Beautiful road, views all around my favorite for coming into Sedona to all the gorgeous red rock formations a good beginning to a great trip.
This is a highway you need to see!

This is such a beautiful drive, you should do it twice! Drive out and back to fully enjoy it! It's a great starting point to give yourself the lay of the land for Sedona hiking. Just gorgeous.

This simply a road where you can drive and view the rocks around. Which is fine but .... when you look at the advertisements of Sedona, you literally see everywhere the Cathedral rock, the Bell rock and other rock formations. I mean that is the draw for the tourists i.e. to hike or to at least hike around these natural formations, if not on it. Problem is there is a huge parking problem. People scampering dangerously around with their vehicles, circling around in desperation. And if you are folks like me who came from a different state just to experience these; it leaves you enraged and cheated.
There is a vast expanse of empty land around the parking lot and nothing in the vicinity, so its not that there is a space issue. It's simply lousy planning.
So, unless you get here by 7.00 am, which if you don't stay in Sedona then its not practical, don't bother coming here. You have been warned.

You must drive this scenic byway while in Sedona! There are beautiful views every direction you turn.

I had read that this was a nice thing to do and add to the trip. We took the drive between activities, and it was a nice way to re-energize the group with good scenery, some cool air in the car, and stopped for refreshments. After a great scenic ride from the Sedona Airport down to the Ranger Station, we were ready for the next trek. The Ranger Station is very well maintained, super informative, and has a couple of nice picture opportunities.

Gorgeous drive, worth taking your he time to take a slow drive and take in the red rock scenery, plenty of places to pull off and get a closer look

The views are amazing and I wish there were more places to be able to pull off and take photos. Great, short drive that's worth seeing.

Beautiful scenery. One of the best going north. Not to be missed. Be careful if it is snowing. It can be very hazardous.

One of the most visually stunning areas I've traveled to. We only had 1 night in Sedona and had I known of its beauty, I would have planned to stay longer. We could have driven the scenic byway multiple times and never caught all its beauty. Literally on both sides of the car, every which way, there are gorgeous rock formations. So much for the eyes to see, you can't take it all in. On our one night in Sedona, there was rain, which doesn't bother me, but I didn't realize there would be fog with it While some of the fog did obscure some rock formations, some of it just hung around the rocks and gave some nice depth to the pictures. Whether you hike or you don't, this is a wildly beautiful area. Definitely worth your time.

Sedona is one of the most beautiful places and truly God created. We had great scenery and good food/drink. Will always be on our revisit list!

Came from phoenix, nic meandering drive into the oak creek canyon and sedona, great views and vistas, try to stop at the oak creek ranger station for hiking info, purchase pass, and other info. Went on a monday, traffic picks up about 5pm. Road construction in downtown sedona causes backups. Overall nice pleasant drive

This is absolutely one of the most beautiful stretches of road in this country. I drove this probably 4 times over the course of a few days because it looked different each time depending on the time of day. Stunning!

We drove this road many times while in Sedona and it's one of my favorites! It's a great drive any time of day, but I love sunrise.

Must drive it, only a few miles, talk lots pictures, beautiful colors.
I want to move there, never get bored

Nice smooth tarmac.
From I-17 to Sedona. The scenery gets better the closer you get to Sedona.
A local told me it can take 2 hours when the town is really busy. We did not have any traffic in late December.

Awesome sites on the byway with view after view. Nice drive to see the scenery. If you don't hike this drive will still allow you to see different vista.

Definitely a great drive and well worth the time even if out of your way. One can never tire of the view.

Take the few extra minutes and get off interstate. The views on this spectacular highway are more that worth it. Just stunning for miles. God's creation is amazing.

This is THE route one should take while entering Sedona. The views are to die for. It does get busy though near the 89A junction. So give yourself plenty of time while going through those 'round abouts', but you cannot miss this one.

This little drive outside of downtown Sedona toward Oak Creek Village is a must do. The sights are stunning and you can park and walk around some of the rock formations.

just a view miles of the most beautiful Red Rocks and nice pull out areas to park and walk the trails

Beautiful ! Good anniversary spot to celebrate our 30th together. Live laugh love traverse city. Will definitely visit again.

The road and views are spectacular. Just watch the wacky roundabout situation. I know it is better than STOP signs but still kind of crazy.

As a first time Sedona visitor, driving from the South and seeing those red rocks for the first time are a sight to behold. And then driving through Sedona and up north towards Flagstaff, even more beauty through the Coconino Forest. Worth a drive just to drive.

A gourgeous drive and good detour from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon but it does take a lot longer than we even expected because of the backups that can happen driving through town. It is worth it if you aren't in a hurry, but it took over an hour longer than if we would have just stayed on the interstate.

Very worth driving. We saw it quite a few times as we stayed in the Village of Oak Creek. Views are spectacular.

Very nice drive to view the sites around Sedona. The brush is growing up and detracts seeing some of the beautiful rock formations, but I’m assuming they are just keeping the area natural. Also, it’s frustrating how some people use a scenic drive as a cut through and want ride on your rear trying to push you above the speed limit, but it’s nice that they have places to pull off and park and take photographs. Definitely something you need to do with a couple hours of your time while in Sedona.

My wife and I enjoyed the scenic drive to Sedona during a short vacation this past August. The vistas are magnificent on this beautiful drive.

This scenic by way is so pretty! Loved the colors and it is well worth the extra time. Don't miss it!!

Absolutely stunning views!! Did it in the morning and in the afternoon with the sunset - so magical!!! <3

Sedona has really degraded. Millions of people drive on this road and up Oak Creek Canyon as a pass through detour to Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon and elsewhere. So a single lane byway through the red rocks is jam packaged with looky loos and tourists behind what the road can handle.

We were expecting some great 'Red' views and we certainly weren't disappointed. The drive is fabulous and we would have given it a five rating except for the lack of places to pull off for veiwing or pictures. There were several spots marked to pull into parking lots, but every one was jambed with vehicles with no spots available. This was on a winter Wednesday. I just could not visualize this place druing the summer. Parking anywhere was at a premium. The road is 2 lane with no shoulder. It seems to me that the planners could have easily put pull-outs along the highway to accommodate this need.

What a great drive! The views are great and the road is fun, especially when you have no one in front of you. Not so much when those in front are scared or looking around too much. I just pulled off a couple of times to get out of those packs. Lots of twists, tight turns, steep hills and valleys to make this a blast.
There's lots of turn outs too with hiking trails are great photo ops. Highly recommend.

This area is full of tourists in October but...go anyway. The views are stunning any way you turn. This has to be one of the prettiest drives in the nation.

This is a beautiful part of Arizona. I would encourage everyone visit here! Rocks and area is colorful and breathtaking.

We didn't stop at the ranger station but we did the drive a couple of times and it was truly stunning. The red rocks are incredibly beautiful. You must do this drive if you are in Sedona!

A very beautiful drive with some turn outs for taking photos. Looks different at different times of the day depending on where the sun is located.

The vistas literally take your breath away, the colors are magnificent and plenty of scenic turnouts to take it all in.

Pull off at one of the parking spots and take some gorgeous photographs! Even a few steps down a trail will bring the views closer. Absolutely stunning!

I love nature! This area is called Red Rock country for a reason! The views, hiking trails, and weather are magnificent! A must do if in the area, or just driving through. Take the time and enjoy the view!

There are so many spectacular drives in this area; this is clearly among the best. Beautiful vistas in every directions with many places to stop and take a photograph or two.

Sedona has to be seen to be appreciated. Pictures don't capture the serene energy of the area. I don't really believe in vortexes but there is something about Sedona that keeps you coming back again and again.

Keep your eyes on the road or ask someone else to drive because this road is just breathtaking gorgeous. Make sure your phone is fully charged.

If you decide to go, you need to buy the ticket in advance (on line). It is worth to go. You will enjoy the nature and the day.

What a wonderful drive on a sunny day...especially in a convertible! Beautiful views around every curve and well worth the time.

If you time it just right, the sun literally makes these views glow. Just stunning, if you in the area, you really need to take this drive.

One of the most beautiful drives in Arizona. Towering red rock mountains with two pullouts for photos. The Biway is under 10 miles.

Beautiful multi-colored red rock bluffs line this scenic highway. Unbelievable vistas that are worth the time to drive this scenic by-way.

When we left our condo headed for SR 179 to Flagstaff, we could not believe what was coming at us on this wonderful drive. The red rock formations were a postcard, on both sides of the road! It was so surreal! Pictures cannot do this scenery justice. You must see it for yourself! And you also must stop at as many of the park and walk areas that you can along the way to get up close and personal with the red rock formations. This route is by far the best scenic route I have ever driven!

This is a stunning drive between I-17 and 89a. The best views are driving towards Sedona, but there are plenty of places accessible from either direction to pull off, park, and enjoy the beauty of red rock country.

I take this stretch of road North into Sedona on my way to work. It is one of the most beautiful and scenic roadways ever. Between about Bell Rock Pathway parking lot and Indian Cliffs road, so it's really only a few miles, but it's gorgeous for real! LOVE IT.
The Scenic Byway *is* the same road as SR 179.

We were here during COVID summer so there was some traffic, but never too much. Lots of places to stop and relax in the river. Beautiful vistas and winding roads when closer to Flagstaff.

Trying to imagine Sedona before you go is hard. There’s nothing quite like it. I read a lot of great reviews and stopped at Rangers station to get this map. Now you can plan Sedona!
We were staying in Scottsdale and had done Scottsdale to the Grand Canyon trip the day before. We only had one day for Sedona so tried to get in as much as possible before dark at 5:30.
We stopped at Montezuma Castle (open at 8am) first and paid $20 for the family to walk in and see the cliff side dwelling. It was the perfect start to our day. We left and drove about 20 mins to the scenic route 179 road into Sedona & stopped first at rangers station and got this excellent map and $5 parking pass (works for each trailhead). The views already were outstanding. We planned to stop at as many trail heads as possible for photos and do one trail walk before Sedona town lunch and our scheduled pink Jeep ruins tour at 3pm. Although it was super busy (still school vacation) there was parking at every trailhead. The Chapel of the Holy Cross was full so we decided to drive on. We decided on the Airport Mesa trail loop and it was great! The first (lower nearest) parking was full with about 10-12 cars, so we drove up to the airport parking $3. It had snowed so the trail walk down to Airport vortex was slippy and muddy in a lot of sections. Hiking boots would have helped but our sneakers did fine. It was about 30-40 minutes total to get down to the vortex hilltop but the views were fabulous. There’s about 60 “steps” and hand rope where needed to get to the top off the little hilltop. Way back up to the parking was just as fun surrounded with wonderful views of Sedonas Rocks.
We had yelped lunch options but didn’t make reservations (a must during peak times we learned) so had to eat at Hideway House which didn’t have a wait). It was ok. Pizza and peach cobbler. Right next door was a wonderful cafe Creekside Cafe, a must stop for coffee lovers!! Grabbed a scrumptious scone and espresso drinks. Then parked 3 mins later in Sedona (very difficult to find a spot give yourself ample time) and went to Pink Jeep tours for 2:30pm (separate review). Grabbed water and bathroom and checked in. We didn’t get to wander through uptown Sedona but wanted to see as much red rock as possible so that’s for next time! The Pink Jeep Ruins tour gave us what we wanted from Sedona! Got back in the dark, cold tired and very happy.

Words cannot describe how you feel when first viewing this magnificent piece of nature
Only a visit to experience the wonderment of it will reveal the Grandview of it.

You will definitely want to travel this road when heading north of Sedona! Amazing views along the way!!

This is a must do if you are in the Sedona area. The drive is one of the most beautiful drives I have ever done. If you get a chance, drive it both ways as the views are so different. There are viewpoints along the way and worth a stop. Nature at its most impressive!

A fantastically beautiful red rock entrance to the city of Sedona. All you've seen in photos but much more vivid in person. Drove in on a Monday, but guessing weekends it is more bumper to bumper as evidenced by the numerous roundabouts.

Speed limit is 35. After a couple of days driving here, you'll be wanting to drive 20 - it's that spectacular. Several pullouts to trails, but which have limited parking.

This is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. The drive from Flagstaff going down around the curvy roads surrounded by gorgeous red rock formations and canyon walls is so breathtakingly beautiful and amazing. Words and pictures cannot even do it justice. You have go to go here. I will never forget this place. I am already planning a trip back and I jut got home. You need to see this!

As soon as you get off N17 and on to 179 the drive gets scenic. When you get to the Ranger Visitor Center there is some information outside, but it is better to go into town to talk to the staff. There are stunning views surrounding your drive into Sedona.

Awesome. The red rocks are very cool. Great hiking trails and sights. Stop by the ranger station for guidance. We saw a tarantula on the path to the ranger station too.

Lovely and easy drive if you pay attention to the road! Come during the day so you can take it all in.

Hard to please teenagers, but our three were all in awe. Good to find a way to show them our beautiful country.

I highly recommend taking time to drive along SR 179. It is a road that you feel like you've arrived. The views, anytime of the day, are spectacular! We drove the road around lunch time. Traffic was minimal. Enjoy the drive, roll down the windows and crank up the music and enjoy the views! Drive safe!

This is a perfect way to enter Sedona. I came in from the south. Once you get near Oak Creek the red rocks begin to appear and you feel like you transported somewhere else. There are plenty of places to stop and take pictures. Many of the parking areas are part of the Coconino National Forest and require you to pay a $5 daily fee. But there is no harm in pulling in, taking a few pictures, and moving on if you are not planning to hike around. Many of the places to see in Sedona are right off this road, so enjoy!

This was a gorgeous drive with lots of spots to stop and take pictures or go for a hike. It was too cold for us to want to take the hikes, but we enjoyed the drive.

We rode thru and were in awe of the beauty on this scenic drive.
Marveled at the work it must have taken to build this thru the mountains.

Make sure to drive along SR179 (the Red Rock Scenic Byway) to get the full effect of Sedona's red rock formations. It's gorgeous in the morning, afternoon, sunset, and early evening. Make sure to stop in at the Ranger Station and Visitor Center.
Truly amazing!

Some of the most beautiful views I have ever seen! I’m from Boston and had never seen a landscape like this before, so every moment was a new wonder!

As you are driving upon this beautiful scene pictured you are in complete awe of the majestic colors of the Red Rock formations, the sun hitting them the size and shapes of them and the blue sky all around you and them. You will not see anything like this anywhere accept in the USA South West! Gorgeous, and Breath taking! So proud to be an American!

Small little niche away from Sedona with great views and great hiking trails. Absolutely a must if you are visiting the Sedona area.

We came in from the north and worked our way south. The sights and red rock formations are incredible!! We stopped along as many sight seeing spots as we could, and went for short hikes. Took our time shopping and eating in Sedona, and went for more driving along the highway heading south. It took the better part of an entire day, but by the time we reached the chapel on the hill the sun was setting, so our timing couldn’t have been better! This was a great way to end our vacation in the Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, and Sedona areas!!

Fabulous drive with wonderful scenery. Highly recommend taking route if driving Phoenix-Grand Canyon. The colors, rock formations, and forest are beautiful. Stop for a meal in Sedona. Take your time, must better than the interstates.

beautiful even when its cloudy and rainy, plenty of pull overs. make sure to stop at the ranger station to get a map of trails

We drove from Goodyear, Arizona to Sedona via this route. The sun was shining and the red rocks glistened in the light. With the cactus, beautiful rocks and wide open spaces this path is a must see!! Byway is path off the beaten path and it sure lived up to the definition. Very easy to drive, just beautiful sites to enjoy from every vantage point. Plenty of pull offs so you can gaze at the world around you.

There is nothing like visiting the red rocks of Sedona. As we exited off of I-17, the countryside began to transform itself as we approached Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon. In two words - simply breathtaking!

Our first time to Sedona. Wickedly hot! Spent most of the time touring in the car. This road is quite beautiful with the stunning views of the red rocks and surrounding desert. I did manage a light hike at a different Sedona location after 6p.m. Also check out Highway 89A north of Sedona. Beautiful canyon country.

Drove through enroute to Sedona. Didn’t stop at the pullouts but enjoyed the views. Great entrance to the beauty of Sedona.

Sedona is one of the most beautiful places on earth! This is our 6th trip and we are never disappointed. The views and landscape are breathtaking. Only negative, is the massive development that has occurred over the last 25 years. I think they win the award for the most round-abouts in the world.

An amazing drive through spectacular scenery. Not great at night because it is very dark and winding. but a must do during the day.

This roda has a few nice stops along the way to Sedona. We stopped by one of them for the sunset. Probably the nicest photos of the trip.

WOW !!!! is all we can say , coming up the road to Sedona is one of the most beautiful drives we have ever seen

We have driven on many scenic roads around the world, but this was our first time on a road like this one. The colors, the red sandstone rock shapes and formations, and the views were fabulous and truly a sight to behold – especially when the sun hits the rocks at a perfect angle. There are several pull-off areas, and we actually entered them for a few minutes to take photos.
We were left flabbergasted and enthralled at the startling beauty of the scenery. I was so glad that I was not driving, and got to enjoy that mesmerizing beauty to the fullest -- without being distracted.
Our hotel was right on this road, so we had the opportunity to drive on it several times.
It is an absolutely gorgeous drive that one must do at least once in their lifetimes. Put it on your bucket list. We are thrilled to have checked it off ours.

The SR 179N is simply amazing. With some spectacular views this is a must do in Sedona!
We drove almost upto 7000 feet elevation & really were blown away by the views.
Must do

Even though it's about 10 minutes longer than using 89A to head to Flagstaff, the Red Rock Scenic Byway is gorgeous, easier driving, and leads to 17 with different views and interstate driving. I'd already driven up and down 89A a few times and was ready for something different.
Along this route, you'll see Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock, Holy Cross, and lots of other interesting clusters of the red rock formations around Sedona.
For 10 minutes longer, it's a less stressfull, less switchback way to head to 17. I would imagine that if you travel to Sedona from Phoenix, SR179 would give you a spectacular view as you come into the Sedona area.

Some of the scenic spots got very crowded and we actually couldn't stop, but it was still the most stunning part of the trip that I can remember...

Have never seen anything like this before so I was taken back by the enormous size of the land formations. The traffic was a bit busy at sections but worth the effort to reach the views. I would recommend this to anyone.

A super stunning drive. Amazing views. Definitely worth the trip. Lots of roundy rounds. Could imagine it would be slow with traffic.

The drive from Oak Crreek to Sedona is breathtaking, offering amazing views of red rock monuments, plenty of vista points and a myriad of trails to explore the red rocks up close, for all levels of fitness. Parking can be a challenge, especially in busy times. Buy a $5 day pass on a machine at any parking area, but park only where indicated or you will get a ticket!

Amazing scenery .. we passed this everyday as our hotel is not too far from here.. its truly delightful you never ever get tired of the view.. its breathtaking.and oh so very relaxing .. so worth the drive from phoenix....

The views along this highway are beautiful, and the light and sky are always changing, creating new vistas. the only challenge is The interchange between the highways in the middle of Sedona can get very backed up in both directions so time your trip accordingly.

Beautiful entrance into Sedona along the Red Rock Scenic Byway. Depending on the time of the day, the views of the rock formations were different. Daybreak, sunlight, sunset. Fantastic views!

Do not miss it! Just have a little patient, as people flock from all over the world and traffic can be brutal.

Save your money. Tour travels down one public road and to a boring cabin accompanied by a boring story about it. Had such high hopes of cool roads throughout the beautiful red rock. Overpriced for what they deliver. Also so bumpy and uncomfortable you will need to see a chiropractor afterwards.

This drive is worth the time and energy. After the initial drive, I stopped in Flagstaff to buy a better camera to capture the beauty.

The drive outside the towns is amazingly beautiful. Be prepared to stop at many of the Scenic Views as they each provide a different perspective. In the commercial area; just park and walk.

We stayed at Residence Inn Marriott and so whenever we drove out onto SR 179 north to get to the city center, we got a front view of the Red Rock mountains. Awesome!

You cannot come to Sedona without taking SR 179 Red Rock Scenic Byway! You’ll hear about 89A, but don’t get on that road until you get to Sedona north on to Flagstaff. The Byway contains such beauties as Courthouse Butte, Bell Rock, Little Horse and the Chapel of the Holy Cross. There are stops along the way with parking lots and easy trails to hike to get a closer look. You can get a day pass for all the lots for only $5 at a parking machine at most of the lots making it an inexpensive, but most beautiful day ever. Don’t forget to bring water!

This is a great picturesque drive through red rock country. Take it slow and look for places to pull over or take a side street and get some photos. Great for taking people there for the first time.

Spectacular place is Oak Creek. Best for convince to trails and restaurants. Bell Rock Inn is perfect place to stay-reasonable and nice accommodations.

Scenery is out of this world. Drive just north of Sedona reminded me of the roads to Hana on Maui- narrows with lots of switch backs.

Coming off hwy 17, the scenery becomes increasingly intoxicating as you approach Oak Creek and Sedona. Truly a marvel of nature on earth.

We drove from the north on Hwy 89A which was very scenic, but also has some very sharp curves. Stopped at several sights along the way. Driving the scenic SR 179 loop was one of the things on our to do list. We camped 3-nights at Dead Horse SP, which put us close to most all of the local sights. My wife cannot be on her feet for long periods so being able to see stuff from the road or just off the road is a big plus for us. We both thoroughly enjoyed this drive and cant wait do do it again at sun set. This visit was in 2013.

The Red Rock Scenic Byway SR 179 is about a spectacular 3 mile ride through the Red Rock formations/monuments. If you have the opportunity do it at Sunrise and Sunset although at any time it is gorgeous! Especially, if you are just passing thru Sedona as least take the short drive and enjoy the stunning vistas. If you have time stop in the parks and do he hikes. They vary by skill level but the Bell park it accessible to everyone and you are able to hike at least to the base of the rock.

You really must drive through this area. The red rock mountains are just breathtaking and well worth the drive.

Wow - entering this fantastic area was breathtaking! The hills are truly a treasure and now I know what everyone was talking about on why you have to visit here! Small place overall and luckily not overpopulated - this should be on everyone’s bucket list.

This is one of my most favorite places on Earth. One time I switched the radio station to a classical station from pop rock in respect to the majesty. Don't try to capture with a camera. Just enjoy

As we came in from 17, we thought “OK, it looks kind of red”. Then, WOW! It is truly stunning. This is one of those places that belongs on your bucket list. I consider myself fairly well traveled, having been to many places in the US and Europe. So, whenever I heard people talking about Sedona, I just didn’t get it. But, you h e to experience it. The pictures are beautiful, but it’s nothing compared to the real thing. So, get it on your list and see for yourself what all the hype is about!

We drove this route several times stopped at all the viewpoints. We also did several hikes, the one thing I would caution is the parking lots can be full so it can be hard to park and hike. So we went early in the morning did a hike and we would go do something else during the early afternoon and go back about 4 in the afternoon and we were able to park again

This is a neat road to drive but you have to be aware of passing cars when you pull over for the beautiful camera shot.

Every time we drove the jaw dropping scenery was ever changing due to the lighting. Just wish there were more scenic lookouts.

The surrounding mountains are beautiful in size and color. Along this road are hiking trails which you have to pay a fee for. My main concern of this road is the behavior of some drivers. There is a 35 mile speed limit and nobody wants a traffic fine for speeding. But it does not feel good having some drivers tailgating on you because they do not care about the speed limit.

Great windy roads and views on every turn! There's lots of scenic viewpoints along the way you can stop at

Spent a few days in Sedona for my birthday and anniversary and every single time we drove the Byway it was breathtaking! The view does not get old!

Breathtaking scenery along Red Rock Scenic Byway. Whichever direction you look, the rocks are spectacular. You must take photos!

It is absolutely amazing to see the red rocks take over as you cone around the highway from Phoenix area. The pictures do no justice you have to see this place for yourself.

If you aren't into hiking this is a great way to see many of the beautiful red rock formations. Many spots to pull off for viewing and photos.

Beautiful drive. Be sure to stop at the Red Rock ranger station for recommendations. They were very helpful!

This is the most scenic drive I’ve ever taken. I appreciated that there are many pull offs where you can stop to take pictures. It was beautiful as the sun was setting. I’d recommend to anyone traveling through this area to drive this byway.

Loved Sedona. (Also -very vegetarian/vegan/gluten free friendly. But also friendly to meat eaters. See recommendations below)
Totally amazing. The town itself is crowded, but plenty of places to go that are peaceful. Recommend:1) Verde Valley Railroad train ride in Clarkdale ( 20 min from Sedona). It’s pricey but we felt fun, worthwhile and better scenery than shown in the website.
2) Red Rock Guest House on AirBnB. Perfect for a couple or two adults okay with one ( king size) bed. Good value, many amenities. Bathroom ( and shower) are small, but space is well utilized. The host, Judith, is very nice.
3) restaurants: Wildflower,an upscale Panera’s is very good; Picazzo’s- excellent pizza ( and more) indoor and outdoor dining (great margaritas), Open Range: full wall windows to red rocks. A bit pricey I would say limited menu. But I just got an appetizer and my husband a hot dog and they were fine with it. Great margaritas
4) Jordan Homestead museum. ( Not the exact name. ) $10 pp. very interesting.
5) DO NOT bother with going to town of Jerome.
6) chapel of the Holy Cross is stunning.
7) definitely do Rte 179 scenic highway at least once AND stop at all scenic turnoffs.
Enjoy

On our recent trip to Arizona, we took the Scenic Byway to Sedona. The views are breathtaking and the scenery is gorgeous along this well- maintained road. Lots of pull offs with, somewhat, limited parking. As usual, I wish we would have had more time. It is a beautiful area.

I first visited Sedona about 10 years ago, and was mesmerized with its raw beauty. It became one of my favorite places I have visited. While the scenery is still breathtaking, the scenic byway is now filled with retail stores and restaurants, hotels and private residences. I was shocked at the rampant commercialism.
When I was here previously, I took a drive on the weekend, and there were very few other vehicles on the road. It was surreal, literally having this beautiful place to myself. Now the Scenic Drive is filled with roundabouts and traffic. I couldn’t even get to one of the viewpoints because the parking lot was full and closed off the two times I tried to visit.
I was raving to my husband about this place, since he never visited, and was dumbfounded on how much it changed. We were mostly driving the Red Rock Scenic Drive (State route 179) and didn’t do any hiking. For the casual driver, there are still some beautiful viewpoints like the Chapel of the Holy Cross, Airport Mesa and Red Rock Loop Road. But there will be a ton of tourists and traffic to deal with. Another scenic drive not to miss is the Oak Creek Canyon Scenic Road (SR 89A) north of Sedona from Flagstaff. It is a beautiful drive loaded with switchbacks for a very unique experience.
The national parks and monuments have it right. When you go to places like Arches or Zion National Park, the only buildings there is a visitor center and maybe some scattered porta potties and camping grounds. There is nothing to distract you from the natural beauty. All of the commerce is located outside the parks in the adjoining towns. I am truly disappointed and saddened that Sedona has morphed into this. Just shows you how greed can spoil such a stunning landmark.

Fantastic road with a view of the red mountains.
Plan lots of photo stops along the way, they are worth it.
Great view and great motifs

This drive is among the most beautiful in the Sedona area. The red spires and rock formations are spectacular to behold. This is a must do drive!

Absolutely Beautiful! Definitely need to drive on this highway. There are trail heads off this highway as well.

Travel the scenic byway from N Hwy 17 on the iconic SR 179 to see the awe-inspiring beauty of the Red cliffs surrounding Sedona. Take the leisurely, smooth ride into the wonderland that is Sedona.
Absolutely gorgeous
Take the Red Rock scenic byway to Grand Canyon. The drive is better than GC. It’s a once in a lifetime experience. There are several places where the elevation is scary but overall incredible.
