If you are looking for an inexpensive activity, you can't go wrong with this.
We did it on a Sunday evening, our last night there, and it was enjoyable. Gave us nice night time of view of Manhattan and the Queensborough Bridge.
Once on the other side, you will have a nice panoramic view of Manhattan from under the bridge. Bring your camera!

We’ve been to NYC a few timed and didn’t know this was here. It’s a nice change from walking and subways and we loved it. Had a nice walk around Roosevelt Island before coming back.

A cheap adventure just a metro pass for $2.85. Trip across to RI but the sky line and the visions of being so high up is worth the trip to see. It is a short trip but oh the views.

What a experience riding the tram to Roosevelt Island. Do ride if you get a chance to do something out of the ordinary in New York City.

Enjoy stunning views of the Manhattan Skyline and the Queensborough Bridge for the cost of a Subway Ride. $2.75 takes you between 60th Street to Roosevelt Island and Metrocards are accepted.
The tramway runs till 2am and is possibly best done at night, as the service is less busy, and, depending on the time of year, the night time sky provides wonderful photo opportunities.
Remember this is an integral part of the New York transport system. Many New Yorkers commute using the tram, making rush hours especially busy - which is the only reason I cannot award 5 stars.
The service is fully wheelchair accessible with an elevator at 60th Street and street level access on Roosevelt Island.

Nice experience for a crossing of New York City with the tram, free when you have the New York subway map, but on the other side not much to see I would say it's only about the view.

Took this brief trip on the tramway mainly because it's there. Would liked to have had a walk around the island but it was pouring with rain and I wasn't suitably dressed.
Very smooth and efficient service and a great thing for the island.

We have been to NYC more times than we can count and had never done this. Was so glad we finally took the trip. There is a machine to buy tickets when you arrive or you can use your Metro card/tap. The trip is quick and beautiful. We only took it one way and took the subway back. We walked around both ends of the island and took the free bus from end to end. Beauty at both ends including a sculpture garden. A nice almost free way to spend the afternoon.

We was recommended to go over the tramway as you get some amazing views of the city. We timed it just before it got dark so went over one way during the day and returned when it was dark. I love seeing NYC change into night time as the views change completely and for the price of around 3 dollars each this is amazing value. If you haven't been over this before then I would highly recommend as I am not sure many people know of this little gem!

A novel way to see New York from a different perspective. After a short queue and inexpensive fare over to the island we entered the tramway and managed to get a front window view. It only takes a few minutes but definitely something different to do when in the city and not far to walk to from Times Square area.

Great views. You must use your metro card as this doesn’t have contactless. Get this sorted before you go to avoid the ticket queue. You don’t have to return as Roosevelt Island subway stop is on the island.
There are a few places to eat close to the tramway stop.

Great views of both Manhattan & Brooklyn skylines plus the barge traffic on the East River as you take the fairly brief ride to Roosevelt Island. While Roosevelt Island has a nice pedestrian walkway that circles the island (also with great views), there isn't that much to see on the Island after you get off the tram. A good way to spend ~1 hour.

Great view from the cable car of the east side of Manhattan. The journey only takes about 5 minutes. We spent a short while in the nearby park on Roosevelt Island, which has views of Manhattan and Queens. It's $4 per person each way. You may have a bit of a wait, as we did, if there's only one cable car running.

We went over to Roosevelt Island on the tramway, we had lunch in the University Cafe and got the loop bus around the Island

You should avoid the tram until at least March 2024. The Tram is currently the only ways to get on and off the island due to work on the subway line. The residents need to use this transit to get to work and to get their small children to school.
There is nothing to see once you get to the island. The food, drink and restroom(!!) options are basically zero.
If you do decide to travel via the tram to the island, expect tight, crowded standing room only with no a/c. You will be bumped up against someone at all times. The tram fits 100 passengers and they will fill it every ride right now because the ONLY subway for the whole island is CLOSED UNTIL
MARCH. The lines are insane and not even a little bit worth it.
What view?? You cannot even see out! What you can see: armpits.
This is not a fun sight-seeing attraction right now and I cannot recommend it.
OH! AND we thought we could just stay on the tram and go back the other way. WRONG. You will have to exit and then que in a long line with rude, pushy tourists that are annoyed they got stuck on the island and have been waiting an hour or more to get off because remember, NO RESTROOMS. And also cranky residents are mixed in the line now too, because of the trains being down until March 2024.
Governors Island is a much better attraction right now. Anything is better.
Expect to waste 2 -4 or more hours of your vacation time if you ignore my advice.

This was recommend by a friend. We enjoyed the ride to/from. Nice way to see the city and Christmas lights. You can use the metro card. Only issue - you have to get on and walk around to get back on if you don’t want to get off.

This was free for us because we had paid for a weeks metro pass. It was easy to find and easy to access. We literally swiped our cards and that was it!
The views are really cool and it’s a really unique experience. We hopped straight back on as soon as the journey was over and it probably took us no more than 30 mins to do the whole thing. It’s nice and quiet and a really nice addition to a trip to NYC, especially if you’re craving a quieter and cheaper activity!

This is an easy way to see a lot of New York in a little time frame. We literally rode it over and rode it back. You can use your metro card but must exit and re enter each time. We didn’t have a lot of time in NY so we didn’t explore the island at all. It was beautiful and quiet. The team itself is Hot! No air so beware! We went on a day it was 110 degree heat index so it was a hot one.

I visited the Roosevelt Island Tramway on the last day of my weeks vacation in New York. My hotel was on Central Park South and I didn’t want to stray too far away after checking out. The tramway is about a 5 minute walk from Bloomingdales so I combined it with a visit to the iconic department store.
At $6 for a round-trip to Roosevelt Island and back this has got to be the best value attraction in New York City. It was nice to see some less touristy areas of New York City and to take some photos of the East River.
The crossing takes about 4 minutes in each direction so it’s great if you want to kill a little time. If you’re in this area give it a go, you won’t regret it!

Brilliant experience. Fortunately it was a sunny day which helped! Well organised and no queue. Stunning views of Queensboro bridge and east river all for the standard NY public transport cost of $2.90. We took the subway back to Manhattan. Station only a small walk from the tram stop. Must do during your visit😊

My daughter and I rode the tramway on a recent visit. It runs on the metro card, so if you have one it is one swipe to go over and one more to return. There is not much to do on Roosevelt Island, we walked around for a bit. Very peaceful and residential- a very different feel for New York. The views for the team were great and worth the side trip.

For the cost of a subway ride was a great way to see a different view of the city - and of course the bridge itself that has featured in many a movie. There was a really lovely chap in the visitors hut who was delighted to share the history of the island - but other than that there's not much else to do once you're there.
We didn't do the return on the tramway as there is a (very quiet) subway station on the island so we used that to return to midtown

Simply spectacular! The view is fantastic from the cable car. And even having a Metrocard is free. I highly recommend this tour

It’s a decent cheap alternative for people looking for something different to do in NYC. There is a decent fleeting vista if you stand on the right of the car as it departs. It’s a good time filler if you are in the neighbourhood.

As the title suggests the service was very prompt. They require facemasks on all passengers and will not allow you to ride if you are not wearing one. Getting tickets was a bit of a pest as the machines required either exact change only or a credit card. Not a problem for us, however the people behind us in the queue for tickets did not have a card and didn't have the correct money so not sure how that worked out. I would take cash just to be on the safe side as the ticketing machines on Roosevelt Island were very temperamental and it took a good 7 or 8 attempts for the machine to read my card 🤦🏼♀️ All worked out with a bit of a wiggle though! The journey only takes a few minutes so capture all you can from the sky while you have the chance!

we took the subway over to Roosevelt Island and walked around a bit to the park to see the abandoned Small pox building. We headed back to the tram and took it over the East River back to Manhattan. It had beautiful views and was free with your metro card. There isn't much to do or see on the island but something cool to do. Great views of the river

A great experience. In conjunction with a walk through Roosevelt Park really worth a trip. We arrived early and it was not crowded at all.

We had read about things to do in NYC and this popped up and sounded like fun. It was a quick tram ride and very stable and safe, but crowded. They are two trams that come and go nonstop so you never have to wait long. Roosevelt Island is a neat little town which lots of history and cute shops and restaurants. We ate at Nisi's for lunch and had wine there as well. We took the free bus around town that you can get on and off of just to see the area.

...Yes...Take a ride to 'Roosevelt Island...which the East River on Manhattans East side flows around... Roosevelt Island is a hodgepodge of mixed use facilities... There are renters, housing for hospitals on the UES, and a university...Cornell's School of Engineering... This is an island that is free of cars that you can get to by subways or driving to a parking garage on the perimeter... But the fun is it travel across the East River on a 'Swiss Tramway' system. Spectacular views of Manhattan and Queens...And a trip in itself...As you glide along. Traveling to Roosevelt Island on a summer's evening and looking back to the Manhattan skyline is a must...but not particularly well known to the typical visit... Be an 'adventurist'...

The Roosevelt Island is very beautiful place. Everybody should go there and the best way to is with the Tramway

We were early for our reservation at Serendipity so we walked the two or three minutes to the tram. Thankfully, staff were available on both sides of the tram to help with the ticket purchases. The tram was clean and a gentle ride both ways. We enjoyed the easy walk to the East River for the view of Manhattan.

If you happen to be in this area of town, its well worth the transit fare (same as any subway ride) for the great views of the area on this short trip. Oh and if you take the subway back within two hours using the same Metrocard, the subway ride is free (counted as a free transfer).

I'm glad we did this although as one or two people have pointed out it's not one that takes up a lot of your time. $4 fare and we literally got on it and more or less came straight back. Daft, but we enjoyed it!

The tramway was terribly crowded when we visited on a Friday afternoon, but I'm so glad that we went. Great views of the city and the cherry blossoms were out! And the tramway is just the cost of a subway ticket $2.75 there and $2.75 back - totally worth it!

We came across the tramway and were happy to find that the cost of the tram was covered under our 7 day metro card. The views whilst riding the tram are fab but after finding Roosevelt island didn’t have much to offer for us personally we got right back on the next tram back into the city.

Fun, inexpensive way to see some great views. Smooth ride. Good for families. Explore the parks and paths on Roosevelt Island. See the small pox hospital ruins. Then eat at Granny Annie’s.

The tramway is just a short ride from Manhattan to Roosevelt island. The ride offers some nice views of the East River and the city so you can get some nice photos. I didn't stay on Roosevelt Island, just turned around and came back. I had a week long subway ticket and didn't have to buy a ticket for the tramway. Even so they are cheap.

A nice and affordable trip both in daylight and at night. You should not miss it and the Island is also very nice

I know it’s bit off all the touristic trails but if you are about, it’s great for the different view of Manhattan itself. Cheap as chips as it equals subway fare.

We waited about 5 minutes for a tram. Fab views but it’s over too soon! After a brief walk on the island we returned on the nearby subway. It was lovely to sit in the shade by the water, a pleasant break from the city’s heat and noise.

My son absolutely loves this attraction- I do too! it is convenient to the East Side, and near restaurants and subway. The ride goes over a pretty section of the river, where you can see Manhattan. If you take the trip over during the evening, the lights are gorgeous to photograph. I'd like to do it during the day, when you can walk around the town on Roosevelt Island. I think there is a lot to do there for families, and they have festivals during the summer

RI and the tram is now more popular with tourists than ever. It just to be our hidden gem, now no longer hidden. That said still worth it to walk the island and tram back onto Manhattan.

For the price of a subway ticket, you can get a transit ride above ground instead of under, with amazing views all around Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the East River, and Roosevelt Island. Disembark onto the island and explore at your leisure, before getting back on the tram. There are also beautiful views up 1st and 2nd Avenue at the tram leaves from/returns to Manhattan.

If you are thinking of riding on this tram for the views think again. If you are riding to get to Roosevelt Island then the tram is a cheap, clean, and quick option.

So finally after 30 years and my 7th visit to NYC, I finally decided to use the cable car and wasn't disappointed. The views across the Queensborough Bridge are fabulous, and it's a cheap and easy way to travel at $3 each way. Well worth the visit. You can pop into Bloomingdales on the way back as it's near by.

The Roosevelt Island Tramway is clearly the best way to get to Roosevelt Island. However, when we went, the cars were filled with as many people as they would hold - which made it a less comfortable experience. It would be better if they limited the number of people on each tram. Each tram generally had a police officer to remind people to wear masks and a driver. There is a bit of swaying if you have a fear of heights. The view is great over the river - though I wouldn't want to live in the apartments and condos that have big windows that open right on the tram.

From E60th and 2nd ave take tram for $3 metro card ticket Do this on nice weather goes to Roosevelt island. (See that review) allow 3-4 hours to see it all or come right back. Just the ride is worth it. If you stop on island go to the white small info building directly under cables just before you land.

A great way to see the skyline of NYC from another perspective. Cheap as chips and fun to try a ride in a cable car. Roosevelt island is really pleasant and clean, nice park down the bottom near the river (Fireman’s park?) would do this again for sure

PROS
* Great fantastic and tremendously fun excursion from East 59th Street Manhattan to Roosevelt Island
* Amazing incredible scenic views of the midtown Manhattan skyline
* Easy to find- track and follow the graceful gliding cable car and tension wires to the origin on First Avenue at east 59th Street
* Easy to access - steps from street level
* Incredibly cheap excursion price- the MTA fare of USD$2.90
* A fantastic bonus- the terminus on Roosevelt Island is mere steps from the loading dock of the incredible iconic New York Ferry for the journey down the East River all the way to Wall Street in lower Manhattan and beyond
CONS
* Crowded with other tourists, despite being a legitimate main transportation option to the island
"I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... because it seemed like such a fun New York City Manhattan thing to do- and it sure was!! This is an iconic activity and highly recommended.
I walked there after visiting the Museum of Modern Art and stopping at a few places on the way (see my three previous reviews). I followed the path of the gondola to reach the origin destination.
The loading dock is simple and functional- this is really a public transportation option and so it is not marketed as a tourist attraction, but it is!! The carriage was packed crowded enough and full of tourists.
The experience was amazing and so much fun!!
The views looking backwards when departing from 59th Street Manhattan are incredible!! There is the iconic Manhattan Skyline (see my previous review) and then watching traffic on the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge and watching the boats below and in the East River!!
Upon exiting, I walked two minutes to the loading dock of the New York Ferry, to meet and board the southbound boat that arrived two minutes later.
All-in-all, a fantastic five-star experience.
WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
Absolutely
WOULD "I VISIT THIS PLACE" AGAIN?
Absolutely for sure
ADVICE from IVTP
* Be sure to do this fantastic scenic epic cheap excursion
* Be sure to enjoy the iconic skyline views
* Be sure to return to Manhattan via the adjacent New York City Ferry
Please enjoy my attached "helpful" 👍 photos 📷

This tramway takes you from E59th street to Roosevelt Isalnd (to and fro) in about 5 minutes and is such a thrilling experience. You can experience ropeway sitting in New york city and it is such a scenic trip with city landmarks and skyline all around and river beneath

This is a unique and inexpensive thing to do in the city. Only $3 for one way ride. Great views of the water and skyline. Cute welcome center building and interesting historic sites to see.

For just a few bucks we did a wonderful water/cable car trip.
Started from Pier 11 in lower Manhattan taking the AS Astoria line East river ferry (around 3$ pp).
It stops on several points along the East river with amazing views all the way.
Disembarked at Roosevelt island, took a walk there and returned to Manhattan by the cable car tramway. It's a short ride from RI to 2nd Av but nice to see the area and the island from different perspective.

It’s fast, cheap, and I encountered no queue. The best view is probably right after takeoff on the Manhattan side where you get a good look at the cluster of apartment buildings. Then it’s mostly the bridge and the river with less of the skyline. However, then you end up at Roosevelt island, which is great for views of the city.

We enjoyed the views from riding the tram to and from Roosevelt Island. Though many reviews said to avoid it during rush hour (7-10 am), our 9.30 trip was nearly empty whereas our 1.30 trip was packed. Very affordable but we found MTA ticket machines on the island were both broken, so buy enough fare before going over from Manhattan.

BEST PART OF NEW YORK CITY VISIT not kidding. Very quiet, tranquil. HIDDEN AWAY in between New York and Brooklyn. And it's free with Metrocard. Can you believe it? Definitely worth visiting and a break from everything you will see in New York City. We visited everywhere in New York in 7 days (see all my other reviews) and this was our highlight.

We were looking for different things to do on this trip and the Roosevelt Tram did’nt disappoint. You can use your Metrocard for the short trip over try to stand at the front of the car for some great shots. Lovely elevated views only a short trip but well worth it ,you do have to get off but ride the free red bus around the town before the return journey. Something different and not expensive .

I visit and ride the tramway every time I'm in NYC. There are great views on the way to and from the island and some nice get away places to walk on the island. The tramway start point is relatively east to find - think in line with the bottom of Central Park but near the edge of the East River at 2nd Avenue. If you have a Metro Card just swipe that as its part of the public transport system.

We jumped on the Roosevelt cable car to visit the island early in a Friday morning. Although it was pretty busy, we enjoyed the experience and the views and then had a little wander round RI before jumping on a subway back over.

I wanted to ride the RI tram on one of my previous trips to New York, but it didn’t happen. This December, I was determined to get there. I went just before sundown. Added to the fading light, some construction made finding the entrance a bit confusing, but there are signs to help - just trust Google Maps. It’s imperative that you have a metro pass to get in. I was one of the first to board the tram, so I went straight to a corner where there was a bench. If there had been a big crowd, I probably would’ve waited for the next tram. Even though I had a seat, I stood up most of the time because of the view. As some other reviews that said, the trip is very short - less than five minutes to Roosevelt Island. The ride over was gorgeous because the sun was just going down, and the views of the city and the river were spectacular. Once on RI, I’ve visited the small but friendly gift shop. Many riders took a bus to other parts of the island, and others turned right around and rode back across the river. After spending a few minutes in the gift shop, I was one of the first onto the return tram. Again, the views were stunning - the lights on the river and the city all lit up. The tram cars go right over the city streets, but I would venture to say many people don’t even notice them. My son and daughter-in-law live in the city, and I encouraged them to go. This would be delightful at any time of the day - and it’s definitely not just for tourists.

A really fun and inexpensive thing to do when in NYC. As a regular visitor to the City I had already done most of the tourist attractions and so was looking for something different to do... A trip on the cable-car (tramway) over to Roosevelt Island (RI) For the cost of a single trip on a METRO Subway ticket (US$2.75) you can take this really fun and exciting journey from Manhattan to RI. The trip literally takes a few minutes but it give great views of the rive, the island, Manhattan and the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge. Once on the island there are free buses or you can walk to visit the FDR Four Freedoms Park and Memorial and the Lighthouse (at opposite end of the island). Really enjoyed this trip and will do it again for sure.

Great service to the island with awesome views. Can use the MTA subway ticket which offers the alternative to return by tube. Once on the island the bus is free so makes for an inexpensive way to get great views of the skyline. So quiet and peaceful

We waited to get the front seat of the tram. It was so worth it. The views are great. The ride is quick maybe 5 minutes. But we really enjoyed it. The tram held a lot more people then expected.

Short, nice ride on the tramway across the East River with some beautiful views. Riding this does require the metro card, which is available for purchase at either end points of the tramway. The journey on the tram itself takes only a few minutes and on one side, you have a good view of the bridge, and on the other side, you will be treated to a nice view of the New York skyline with East River forming a perfect backdrop. I really loved the views while riding on the tramway. The tramway terminal at the Roosevelt Island is near their visitor center. If taking this tramway, I would highly recommend spending some time exploring Roosevelt Island as well - the island offers some spectacular views of the city skyline.

Worth a visit. It is a nice quiet get away from the rush of main Manhattan. The views are a bonus too.

We took the subway out to Roosevelt Island and had a lovely walk along the waterway ending up at the Roosevelt Monument.
We spent a short time there reflecting on the wording on the stone - if only we had a world that Roosevelt hoped for!!
We had a nice walk back and took the Tramway into Manhatten.
The view isnt great but it is a very fun thing to do.

The Roosevelt Island Tramway disappointed me. I expected to be much less crowded and have better views. The bridge blocked my view for most of the ride and the tram was crowded and packed with people. All you needed for the tram was a metro card.

It's a short but nice weight. You can use your metro card to make the payment if you leave Manhattan, when you retake it from the island you are no longer charged.
It takes about 5 minutes to travel.
We didn't have to wait either time.
On the Manhattan side if you don’t want to climb several floors on stairs, you can use the elevator.
I recommend climbing at sunrise or sunset. The cabin does not bring air conditioning, only the outside air enters through the grilles.

If you're staying in NYC for more than a couple of days, this is a must do. Get to Roosevelt Island either using the tram or the subway. Try the tramway for the views. Cost is the same as a subway ride ($2.75) - brilliant if you've bought an unlimited Metro card. No queue when we went around 10am in August. Gets you to Roosevelt Island, with its Smallpox Hospital & brilliant views of midtown Manhattan & the Pepsi sign in Queens.

Something different, and nice vue.Stayed for a Walk close to Cornell University. Very silent. Reccomend a tour.

This is such a great idea for someone who has visited New York a few times and wants to see something different. It costs $3 one way and it’s a great trip in an air-tram past the queens borough bridge and onto Roosevelt island. It has an interesting history but it’s also a great view of the skyline from a different direction. Spend a few hours and really enjoy it!

Loved the scenic views!! Quick, clean and well priced ride. It has always been something I wanted to do in NYC and now I have.. :)

I finally got a chance to take this unique aerial tram ride over to Roosevelt Island. It's a popular excursion, but having an MTA weekly pass meant quick and easy access.
I visited late one afternoon and enjoyed decompressing after a long day out. The sunset had a Manhattan-henge moment, too, which added to the atmosphere.
Hoping to get back again for further exploration on my next visit.

It costs $2.90 and 5 minutes to cross the river and get to the tiny but very pretty Roosevelt Island for a walk along the river.

can try to take once if you haven't done that before, you can take a look to the view, it's $3 when we went there in Aug 2022 and the OMNY system didn't include/count this tram ticket.

This is a must do for anyone with an unlimited metrocard. Something different in NYC. Great views on the way to Roosevelt Island.

We took this tramway to Roosevelt Ireland. The regular subway fare which was $2.90 per trip. Cheap way to get some good views and do something a little different!

Nice experience. short ride but great view, cheap ticket.
no need to stay on the island, take the first tram back. the view is probably better on the way back.

If you already have a Metro card, with a daily/weekly pass the Tram fare will be included!
Takes just a few minutes but a nice activity and gives you a different perspective of NYC skyline.

NY is really a special and unique town. It's a MUST taking the tramway to reach Roosvelt Island. The view you see is special and...... maybe Spiderman can arrive jumping on the roof of the tramway....... :-)

I discovered this activity while doing my program and frankly I am not disappointed. The crossing is quite fast and the view is great over Roosevelt Island and Manhattan. No or little waiting to get into the cabins.
The crossing is included in the metro card otherwise it costs the Award of a metro ride.

The tickets for the tramway are part of the MetroCard system so nice and easy to board. The views are good and the trip only takes about five minutes. Didn’t spend any time on the island other than to get a couple of bridge photos.
You have to get off at each end to be able to get back on. Worth waiting for the next team if it’s crowded so you can get a good seat (face Manhattan).

Get the tram to Roosevelt Island after sunset. You can experience beautiful views of Manhattan skyline!!! One of the must experience places in Manhattan!!!

This was a quick, fun little adventure with beautiful views. We used out metro cards & got off and right back on. It was a nice quick ride that we enjoyed

Only one car was running but the queue wasn’t to bad. The infrastructure was under repair and as we got underway the conductor said we were to make a quick stop at tower 2 to pick up some workmen. Sure enough the car stopped at the pylon and 2 riggers jumped onto the top of the car ... all a bit James Bond really!
It’s only $3 a ride and you get great views of the East River.

For the same price as the subway, you can take this short tram ride across the East River and enjoy great views of the city and Roosevelt Island. The ride only takes a few minutes, but it's a unique experience.
You can return by tram, or continue your journey using the subway or NYC Ferry on the East River. There may be a short queue, especially during the day, as it's a popular attraction with tourists.

I never knew this existed until I looked up what the tram was in the opening of SNL. I thought it would be a fun new thing for me to do in the city.
You need to use a Metro card to ride across and it’s a pretty quick trip. We did have to wait about 10+ minutes since one of the two trams were not running at the time.
We didn’t explore too much of the island, mostly just walked to the park on the south end. The views were so unique and the open, spacious park was really relaxing and a reprieve from the city. It was actually much cooler temperature-wise too.
It was a fun experience for sure if you have the extra time to check it out.

We fancied doing something a little different so chose to take the kids on the Roosevelt Island Tramway. It's the same price as a single subway journey and you can use your metro card or swipe a contactless card. We had a very short wait for the cable car, the journey across to Roosevelt Island only took about 7-8 minutes but its worth doing for something different, especially if you're travelling with kids. The tramway drops off right next to the NYC ferry terminal, so we decided to get that down to lower Manhattan which was also very good and only cost around $4 each.

My family and I enjoyed riding the tram roundtrip to Roosevelt Island and would recommend it to anyone with children. It takes you quite high and the cars are large with seating in the front and rear. It wasn't particularly crowded and we didn't wait more than a few minutes either way. The price is the same as the cost of a subway ride. A little gem few non-New Yorkers know about. Roosevelt Island itself isn't that exciting, but still nice to see.

It is just a fun thing to try. It definitely does not need to be at the top of any must see lists, but it's a fun item to cross off your bucket list if you happen to want something to do.

I live on the island for 2 years and every morning take the tram to transfer subway. The best thing about the tram is on time and the staff is pretty friendly!
it's running around 5 min one way
nice view to see the straight block roads in manhattan

We lived on Roosevelt Island before and usually took the tram across to Manhattan. It is a scenic ride. It was quicker than taking a bus to Astoria and another to Manhattan. The only other ways off the island are on the F train to Bryant Park or via car/taxi. Although, my elderly parents were a bit spooked when the tram seemed to wobble or stopped midway and when a tram worker jumped on top of it.

After whizzing around the city in taxis and subway, it makes a refreshing, novel way to travel!
There are two ‘cars’ that alternate with each other so as one is taking people to the island, another car is bringing people back. The wait and journey isn’t long, about 5 minutes in total and you get some real good views of the city.
There is a charge for the return service, I’m not sure how much as I just swiped my Metro Card at the machine but I understand it’s not a lot of dollars. There are ticket machines either end for you to purchase for the journey.
This is a must when visiting the city!

Unique experience when visiting NYC. The aerial tramway connects Roosevelt Island in the middle of the East River to Manhattan. It was the first commuter aerial tramway in the US and was opened in 1976. You can also access Roosevelt Island using the F train, but this is much more fun and offers interesting views of the East River, Queensboro Bridge and the Manhattan Skyline. You can also ride by just tapping your Metro Card as it is the equivalent of a single ride on the subway. It is a short ride that only lasts about 5 minutes. There isn't a whole lot to do on Roosevelt Island as it is a quiet place, but maybe that is what you are looking for. You can stroll along the promenade on the river with nice views of Manhattan or visit the lighthouse on the northern tip or the FDR Four Freedoms State Park at the southern tip with the memorial and ruins of a Smallpox hospital from 1854.

The Roosevelt Island Tramway is a must do when you visit NYC. So, why haven't I done it during any of my previous visits to NYC? I don't know. Don't make the same mistake I did and be sure to take the Roosevelt Island Tramway when you visit NYC. The Roosevelt Island Tramway offers spectacular views of the Queensboro Bridge. Finally, you can use your Metro Card to pay for the fair. So, if you have a weekly Metro Card like we did, the Roosevelt Island Tramway is free.

This Tram takes you from Manhattan to Roosevelt Island.
It's at a cost of a Metro ride and you get to see the city skyline
The island itself does not have too many thing to do in it, but you can tour it a little and see the river and come back.

My experience was very unpleasant. There’s a long line to get on and it was packed. People are aggressive and rude. You’re stuck in the middle and cants see the view, just standing among a bunch of sweaty tourists.

We took the tram to Roosevelt Island to tour the island. Use the Metrocard same as subway ride. The Island was nice to see we walk along the outer trail many trees for shade which provided cooler temp. We had a very good lunch at Granny Annie. Island provide free bus riiide around island.

Great experience to see NYC from above and if you have the metro card it’s do free so if you have some time over take the tram to Roosevelt island. There is also a bus driving around the island free of charge so you can check out some interesting points as the lighthouse

The Roosevelt Island Tramway is an amazing aerial tramway that transports passengers to and from Roosevelt Island & the Upper East of Manhattan.
Opened in May of 1976, the Roosevelt Island Tramway is the first commuter aerial tramway in the United States. It crosses the Harlem East River and operates parallel to the Ed Koch Queensborough Bridge. Since its opening, it’s been well received by passengers and has been featured in numerous films such as “City Slickers” “Spider-Man” (2002) & “Dark Water” (2005).
In January of 2024, I brought and treated myself and my wife for a ride on Roosevelt Island Tramway and we highly enjoyed our experience. We’ve lived in New York our whole lives, but our January visit marked our first time on this aerial vehicle.
Both my wife & I found our ride to be safe and comfortable and were impressed with the large volume of passengers that it was able to carry.
The highlight of our ride were the spectacular views of the Harlem East River, Roosevelt Island, Ed Koch Queensborough Bridge & the New York City skyline.
For anyone living or visiting New York, we highly recommend a ride on the Roosevelt Island Tramway!!! You’ll love it!!!

We came across this by chance when we was researching things to do before our holidays and wow was we glad we did . For 2.75$ each way was amazing . We had a quick wizz round Roosevelt Island ( mainly residential but good views of the city) and back again

Spectacular view of manhattan skyline from tram and also from rosevelt island. Amaizing place to spend leasure time

So I chose the wrong day to go to Roosevelt Island. It was a cherry blossom festival (14th April 19) and there was a huge line. It took me 30-40 minutes to ride the tram. It’s not the most useful mode of transport in the five boroughs since it only connects Manhattan to Roosevelt Island and the ride takes approx. 3 minutes. After boarding the little bright red car, I was able to snag a spot near a window and took in views of Queens and Roosevelt Island to the north, and Midtown’s skyscrapers to the south. The sun was shining. a quick transit connector service to and from Manhattan which offered scenic views of the city’s skyline. Unlike the typical screeching and squealing of a subway train, the RIT soared across the East River with poise, grace, and stability. The ride was very stable, not swinging much.
The tram is easily accessed from two different subway lines. For me, I boarded a train on the “N” subway line and got off at Lexington Avenue / 59th Street station. From there it was a short 2-minute walk over to the tram station at E 60th Street and 2nd Avenue. The Manhattan tram station was inconspicuously and neatly tucked into a street corner. Only costs a subway ride for this spectacular view. And yes, you can swipe your metro card.
Most aerial trams are seen as tourist destinations, used for recreational purposes and little else. But here in New York, this is just another way of getting around—and that’s pretty cool. It is one hidden gem of Big Apple

A nice way to see some bridges and skyline of New York. The ride doesn't take very long and you can use your Metro Card. A lot of people there at times though so be prepared for that.

If you already have a metro card for your stay in New York, I would definitely work this into your plans! And if not- it's the best low-cost way to see views of NYC from the sky! The trip itself doesn't take that long- maybe four minutes max actually in the air, but you can spend a little time on Roosevelt Island if the weather is nice before you head back.

Tramway is basically just a mean to get from A to B, from Manhattan to Roosevelt. It takes only a few minutes and you enter with your metro card. If you are afraid of heights, this may be torture for you. The view to the city is nice, but don't look down when you pass the East River. Also, always pretty crowded so difficult to take pics. You get great pics from Roosevelt though.

Nice views on Manhattan. Roosevelt Island is interesting: a quiet place a few steps from Manhattan, nice spot for a picnic. The trip doesn't take long. In addition, it's cheap: you can use your MTA metro card.

This Tram is another way to reach to Roosevelt island in middle of east river running between Manhattan and Queens/Brooklyn. The trip used to be free for sometime ago, but now it cost same as any subway ride (currently $2.75, each way). As to Roosevelt Island it self has developed so much that cost of living is no less than Manhattan.

We saw this on posts for trips to NYC and that it would be fun to do and added it to our bucket list.
It was a lovely walk from the Rockefeller Centre after seeing the tree, TOTR and Sak's light show, it let's you see the quieter streets of Manhattan.
The Roosevelt Tramway sits snuggled into 59th street at 2nd Avenue.
We used our Metro tickets there and back as we had purchased them for seven days, being free made it even more enjoyable.
If you don't have a Metro ticket it will cost 3 dollars each way.
Stunning views from both sides of the Tramway and a few photographs to be taken, we loved seeing it overhead.
Smooth a quick journey. Would recommend it.
We walked along 59th Street to Lexington and got the Metro back to Broadway.

You can use your subway card on the Tramway!!! A nice and cheap non-touristy thing to do! A fantastic way to get excellent views of Manhattan!

I decided to head to Roosevelt Island using the tramway located in Manhattan. There was a bit of a line, and it took a while to actually board the tram, probably because only one of the two trams was operating. The lines went into the Tramway Plaza and snaked up the stairwell. There is a barrier at the top similar to the subway where you can use a transport (Metro or OMNY) or a credit card to get through.
Once you get in the tram, everyone essentially packs together to load up. The tram travels beside the Queensboro Bridge and gives an interesting view of NYC. The tram windows are fairly large, so you should be able to see things as it moves.
It was an interesting way to get to Roosevelt Island. It wasn't as busy going back to Manhattan, but I ended up taking the subway anyway. If only going one way, it would be a better option to take the subway to Roosevelt Island and then the Tramway back to Manhattan.
Either way, it was a nice experience, even though it was a bit busy.

With the metro card you can ride this tram that offers a beautiful view.
It's very fast.
Recommended.

What a great way to go to Roosevelt island by the tram. You can used a metro card for the same price as the subways. It’s a beautiful view, and I felt safe riding in it. It’s a quick ride and great to take pictures of the surrounding area. Roosevelt island is a nice place to visit, it’s surrounded by water. They have a few great restaurants to stop and eat for a reasonable price. I’m looking forward to another ride on the tram and another visit to the island.

I’ve been wanting to take the tram over to Roosevelt Island for a while now, so I’m glad we finally fit it in. For just the cost of a metro card swipe, we had great views of the city. It was a fun little trip.

We took the cable car from Manhattan to Roosevelt Island. You're charged the same price as a single journey on the subway. The views across the city are amazing. Once we had crossed over to Roosevelt Island, we wandered about exploring the island, before taking the subway to Brooklyn. Worth every penny, just for the experience - you wouldn't believe how high off the ground you are. Amazing!

You have to take the tram to Roosevelt Island instead of the subway. What a view of the Upper East Side and of the island itself. You get to see the tops of buildings and all the parks. It is fun to see what the neighborhood looks like from above.
What is nice is that at the bottom of the hill is the Visitors Center where you can information on the island. It is a good place to stop for water or a snack before you begin your journey.
Roosevelt Island has a lot to offer and to see.

I had a NYC native tell me about the Tram that goes to Roosevelt Island - right over the East River. It was chilly when I went so I didn't do much exploring but the trip over and back afforded great views up and down. For something a little different ......

Couldn’t get a ticket as although machine was working fine for buying a metro card, it strange wouldn’t allow you to buy a single ticket. Guide books suggested this as a getaway from the city but having been to Governors island the day before this was just not that great.

I never knew there was a tramway in NYC. I didn't have any particular reason to go to Roosevelt Island other than to ride the tramway and get the views of the city skyline. We rode at night and the views were pretty awesome. Once on the other side the red bus can get you around the island. I'm not a fan of heights, but you don't realize that you are very high off the ground because the views take you mind off of that. The ride itself is pretty short and very smooth. At $2.75 each way I recommend it.

The tramway is really cool and takes you from Manhattan to Roosevelt Island. It’s only a few dollars and efficient and fun.

99 percent of tourists never take the tram to Roosevelt Island, but on a nice day it’s a wonderful walk around Roosevelt Island with unexpected great views of Manhattan and the East River. Round trip on the Tram is less than $14. Also, plenty of nice Pubs and Restaurants around the Tram that cater to locals.

Great view from the tramway...but there's literally nothing to see or do on Roosevelt Island, so this is a rather short outing. Our little grandsons were thrilled with the ride, however!

Before coming to NY I had read about the cable car connecting Manhattan to Roosevelt Island, but was not sure whether we could fit it in our schedule.
Luckily, before going back to the hotel one late afternoon, we made and we definitely loved it! I taken plenty of cable car while going skiing on the mountains, but this was a pleasant experience, fun and it offered a wonderful perspective on the city.
Since we had a weekly subway pass, we did not spend a dime and we had a very good time taking pictures and admiring the city's skyline.
We spent about 30 mins on the island, just enough to wait for the following cable car and take pictures.
What a fun attraction, I strongly recommend it to whoever has some spare time, you won't be disappointed.

I do agree the views are amazing, but as a resident of Roosevelt Island, please remember this is a mode of transportation for us here. This is how we get to school, work, receive medical care, go grocery shopping, etc. When you crowd the tram, please be aware this isn’t a carnival tram ride. Because of the crowding, the lines are now very long to enter the tram from both sides. I’ve had to wait almost an hour for a 2 min ride to get home. Also be courteous of the elderly and disabled that use this tram. We’ve seen many tourists push and take up seats, only to stand up over the seat to take videos.

After living in NY my whole life, it was nice to explore something new and do the tram experience. I was a little nervous as we approached the top of the cable car experience, but it was a beautiful view on a great day so I am glad I didn't chicken out. Once on the island we quickly took the free red bus to see the entire island. We got off by the Roosevelt Island Four Freedoms Park and had some amazing views of lower Manhattan. On the way back we were able to use our Metrocard and transfer to another line for free. I highly suggest a visit to this island and to the old smallpox hospital which is now a historic site.

The Roosevelt Tramway is the Ariel way to get to the island. It’s just $3 each way and runs every 6 min or so. For overseas guests …tickets with credit cards for some unknown reason want a Zip code …so keep rejecting. Bring $10 note as it will only give a max of $9 change! Mad in 2023 but there you go. It’s great however.

Worthwhile taking a walk across Manhattan and visiting here, taking a trip across the Tramway, seeing the river from a different perspective. Used our Metro card, approx. $4 per person per journey so easy to do.
On Roosevelt Island there were cafes and restaurants to visit and a nice walk round before we returned, a good morning out.

This trusty cable-car (aka tramway) offers the easiest journey into Manhattan I ever took. It is clean, punctual, runs from 6am to 2am and allows you to stay in Roosevelt Island University Campus Graduate Hotel, and step straight into the waiting chariot to be able to walk anywhere within reason. Central Park, Central Station, Times Square.

Something different! Costs just $6 return (you pay each way and have to get off). Takes just a few minutes but a nice activity and gives you a different perspective of NYC. Well worth the effort. Tip, wait for the next Tram and get a window seat at the front side of the car.

Worth trip. Payment is by metrocard which is best way to get around new york on subway and can be used on tramway.
4 minute ride takes you to Roosevelt island where can walk through park along river to new york.

Not much to do on Roosevelt Island, but the ride itself is great. The views are unbeatable, and even if you turn around and go right back, it's worth it.

Excellent and really entertainment for the whole family! I definitely would suggest to attend it during a sunny day!

The tramway is one of New York's lesser known means of transport, you can ride using your metrocard, and the journey takes about 8 minutes each way (you have to get off at each end).
it gives you some very nice views of the city, avoid rush hour as it can get pretty busy
For Spiderman fans this is one of the locations from the first movie where he saves the occupants of the car

For most of my life I wouldn't be caught dead on a Tramway.... all this changed when I moved to NYC 10 years ago, and I have no idea why. Fabulous view. When you get to Roosevelt Island don't miss architect Louis Kahn's Roosevelt memorial at the south end of the island

Wanted to do something different on this trip to NYC so caught the aerial Tramway to Roosevelt Island. Once we mastered the ticket machine, we boarded the tram and took the short journey alongside the Ed Koch Queensborough Bridge. It was a nice view of the streets and across the water but over relatively quickly. Would be a nice commute to work from the island!

Don't know what I was expecting but the short trip was a bit underwhelming. We walked from near Times Square to the landing. The tram car filled up with many people. Most seemed to be tourists. For a tram, the ride was smooth and stable. And quick--seemed like only a few minutes! Went over roadway and river. Some lovely scenery and city scape. All disembarked. We went around the corner and rode back. Nice views. Enjoyed the trip but would likely not do again. Glad that I did it, though!

This is one of the most horrible experiences. The lines are long, its too hot and there is close to zero ventilation inside. Moreover tourists from all over the world visit this tiny metal box with no ventilation and get crammed in. You are pretty much guaranteed to catch a variant of covid after this ride. It only lasts 4mins but wait time is >30-40mins. Avoid it! Completely overrated.

For $6 you get to ride the tram across the river. It’s amazing and well worth a trip. 2nd Ave and 60th Street.

The ticket machine does not accept Onny unfortunately so you require cash to load your subway card as it doesn’t accept cards without a zip code
Once you have a ticket the tram is frequent and staff friendly.
One night I managed to get on without realising my 18 year old hadn’t got through the turnstiles as he didn’t have enough on his subway and we had no Wi-Fi but I spoke to the operator who kindly called and got a message to my son that I would meet him over the other side 🤣
Lovely aerial views of Roosevelt Island which you can run or walk round
The tramway goes alongside Ed Koch Queenboro Bridge which is worth a walk across too
We did the trams both day and night as hotel was in Long Island city

$3 each way and so worth it! Loved the ride and the views from Roosevelt Island. Don’t miss doing this!

For $2.75 a one way trip is excellent value and we used our metro cards to gain access to see great views from high above the East River.

Well worth a ride, lovely views but gets really busy. We did a round trip for 23 dollars for 4 people and we asked the guard to do it as we couldn’t do it in the machine easily. Guard really nice and helpful.

I love it. It cost the same as a subway ticket (can use the metro card as well). It takes you from mid Manhattan to Roosevelt Island. A very nice experience if you want to get out of the clouds, have a nice walk and enjoy the company of ducks, squirrels, birds and some more fauna, Great views of Manhattan, great for pictures.

The journey takes only a few minutes. You only have a good view directly at the window. There's not much you can do on Roosevelt Island itself. Still great....

So the view is not great. Mostly the view is obscured by the Washington bridge that runs parallel to the tram the entirety of the trip. Also the trip requires payment each way so it costs basically $6 per person for the experience which gets expensive for a family of four for a ho humm boring view of barely the tip tops of the iconic buildings of Manhattan.

We had a weekly card for the metro and it can be used to ride this. Definitely worth doing for a different view of the Manhattan skyline.

We arrived by subway on Roosevelt Island around 8pm and enjoyed the descent to Manhattan by tramway (a gondola suspended above the river) Very exciting to enjoy the city lights at night.
We did not queue and tourists on each cabin allow you to approach the windows to take pictures and enjoy the night view.

Free with the Metrocard.
But very crowded. If you have a window seat you have a nice view. Unfortunately the ferry was not running to continue

too crowded, 2 mile long line, everyone was crammed inside. Roosvelt island suffers from poor connection, we should not overload the tram too

We rode the tramway in October, did a round trip and thoroughly enjoyed it. The cost (each way) is the same as a one ride on the subway and you can use your metro card for the journeys. You get a great view of the bridge too. A nice quick and cheap tourist attraction.

This may not be one NYC's top 10 list but it is definitely worth your while, per se but also because the FDR memorial on Roosevelt Island is great.

Lovely journey over getting to enjoy some lovely scenic views.
Not much on Roosevelt Island to explore but nice to sit by the water and take in the views especially towards to end of the day and enjoy the sunset and the quiet laid back atmosphere before heading back over to the busy Manhattan.

We rode the tram across and took pictures of the city from inside. It was a cool way to see the city.. it cost $2.90. We rode the tram across one way and wrote it back the other way. There was about a 15 minute line wait because one of the trims was down but if you’re the first or the last ones on, you can get a better view point.

This tramway is actually part of the MTA subway and bus system. The fare is very reasonable The ride is only about 5 minutes but it changes your perspective of Manhattan. When I was there, there were only a couple of shops open, a pharmacy and the visitor center. Quiet stop from the madness of Manhattan. Once there, you can take the tramway back or the subway to Queens or back to Manhattan.

I took the tram on a beautiful Sunday morning. I had meant to go to Roosevelt Island for a few years and am happy that I finally went.
I knew that you could pay with a metrocard, but as I don't take the subway much when I go to New York, I was happy to see that I could get one directly at the tram.
The conductor was really nice going and come back and since it was a Sunday morning, it was not too filled up.

Even though there are other options to get to Roosevelt Island, this is a must-do!!!
The view is incredible and even if you are afraid of other trams this one is so smooth you will not think you are on one.

We were staying in Long Island City. My daughter and I walked halfway across the bridge to Roosevelt Island and explored the island. It was quiet and beautiful. We then took the tram to Manhattan and walked a few blocks to Central Park to meet the rest of the family. On the way back the grandchildren decided they wanted to experience the adventure. We all headed the few blocks to the tram from the park and they loved the tram. We had a great dinner at an Italian restaurant that was very family friendly.

First time taking the tramway, went over to Roosevelt Island to the Panorama Room. We were able to see the tram coming to head up stairs to the platform. Wasn't too busy around 6pm on Friday and the ride over was nice and smooth. Going to Roosevelt Island on the other side you think you're in for a steep decline looking at the cable, but all goes smoothly, and I was shocked at the decent. Ride back was just as smooth and nice to see the city lit up at night.

Wonderful if not a little odd
In the city of the taxi and the subway an aerial tramway was not what I expected
A totally different perspective on the Manhattan skyline and you get to discover the tranquility of Roosevelt Island as well
Do it

User friendly (Metro card access), safe and efficient! The tram doors open on one side so that existing passengers get off on one side and entering passengers on the opposite side therefore eliminating enter/exit chaos! The ride was smooth, got to see some amazing views and explored Rooseveld Island for about an hour (sun set was great, also had fun chasing squirrels).

Wow, wow, wow! This activity is the best kept secret in Manhattan.
We visited NYC for eight days with friends and opted for the seven day metro card at $32 it was one of the best purchases we made. It meant we could use it on The Roosevelt Island Tramway. Unaware of its existence we heard of it via friends.
We are so pleased that we did make time to find it and to take the trip.
The tramway itself if amazing, runs on a regular schedule it offers a different experience and view of Manhattan.
Once on Roosevelt Island you can go for a walk like we did to the edge of the park or you can simply return. It is a commuter tramway so gets very busy during rush hour. Even so I would definitely recommend and definitely return.

Saw the tramway and decided to ride it over and back again to get some beautiful views of the water and skyline. If you have a metro card, this counts as a normal ride, no extra charges. It only takes a few minutes to cross the river and is a smooth ride.

We had a side trip to Roosevelt Isoand via the tramway (cable car). You’ll get a great view of the city from this short ride. And you’ll get to see the sights of RI. From there you’ll get a great view of the NY Manhattan side as well.

It can be used with your Metro card, so if you have a 7 day pass the tramway is in effect a free pass. It is a short ride, takes about 5 minutes to get across on the cable car - there are two cars, crossing at regular intervals with a large capacity so wait time is minimal. There's a lovely park "Four Freedoms" at the south of island and some different views of Manhattan across the river. Great photo opportunities going across for the sky line but also allows you to see just how long and straight the avenues are.
I would definitely recommend if you are in NY for a few days.

Great ride, very efficient. Such a great island awaits. The metro pass is good value for families. Recommended.

Not many knows about this tramway and the island itself is so small and you will hardly see people. Nice view of Manhattan with quite river side walk! Amazing quite place in the heart of Manhattan!

Go in the evening for the 'Flight' back into Manhatten when lit up. Cheap as you like and an amazing perspective. The Irish pub is great a couple of minutes walk from the station.

It's an easy tram ride for the cost of a subway ride and you can walk to the FDR Memorial with a nice view of Manhattan and Queens. A unique view of the city.

I've been wanting to do this for ages and finally got to to it on this trip. It's so handy - you can use your metro card. It looks like it's going really fast when you watch it from the ground but when you're on it, it doesn't feel fast. A different way to see Manhattan!

Honestly I did not know about this so called tramway (for me it is cable car!). Friend of mind told me about it. And I am so grateful for this info. If you have chance, USE IT! great view, and different point of view of Manhattan! And no extra ticket, just your normal Metrocard! So cool!

This is a must do for everyone visiting the amazing NYC.
If you get yourself a weekly Metrocard which I highly recommend for your stay to use all over the city then you will find that you can ride the Roosevelt Tramway for Free with your Metrocard.
Just look at as a ride with a great view. If your quick enough you can ride over to the island and back again.
The trip lasts about 15 mins one way with spectacular views all around, fitting around 40 people in with space. Not sure what's on the island but either way it's something you must tick off your list.

This is a great way to see some of the city from overhead on your way to Roosevelt Island and all the new wonderful buildings!

Definitely the best way to reach Roosvelt Island ! Slow and safe with a pretty view :) You can buy the ticket directly at the tramway.

Really this is just a mode of transport for people to the island,I’ve been to NY a lot and never been to Roosevelt island so of we went for a look. The views are quite good especially of the bridge but apart from that we had a coffee bit of a look around and back on the tramway.

This was lovely trip across to Roosevelt Island with amazing views. Unfortunately the ticket machine was confusing as when we put our code in we needed a zip code. We live in UK so no zip code. There was an assistant and he was busy trying to help others so when he came to us and the car was about to leave he let us on without paying. The machine did accept cash but we had none. We had been using tap on the subway so had thought this would be the same - hopefully it will be soon.
We returned to Manhattan on the ferry - easy to buy tickets as I had downloaded app and great way to travel.

Use your MetroCard to take the tram from Manhattan to Roosevelt Island? Why? Because it's such a cool view leaving Manhattan, heading over the East River, and into Roosevelt Island. We decided to explore Roosevelt Island for the day and decided to take the tram on the way there (we took the F train back to Manhattan on the way home). I'm glad we did. The views are amazing. It moves slowly enough to get some good shots of the views, but our tram was so full that there were too many people between me and the windows to be able to enjoy the views. The tram runs pretty often and doesn't take long at all. I highly recommend taking the tram out to Roosevelt on your first visit to the island! What perspective and views!

What a nice treat catching the Roosevelt Island Tramway for a quick there and back trip to RI. The tram itself provides stunning views of the city and once on the island there is a park, Starbucks, and dining. Under $10 for a unique view was a great little jaunt.

A lovely way to cross the river - if you have the metro card - which is a must for getting around - you just use it on this too

I was first made aware of the Roosevelt Island Tramway from the TV show America's Next Top Model when the aspiring models had to do a challenge on the cable car.
As a result it was something I wanted to check out on my visit to New York City.
The cable car runs from Second Avenue to Roosevelt Island. There is a road that links the Island to Queens but this is probably the fastest way to get to the Island from Manhattan.
The cable car runs parallel to the Queensboro Bridge and you get some great views of the East River and the Bridge as you soar over.
You can use your metrocard or credit/debit card to pay for your journey and you pay for each journey.
The cabins are not huge but have got some seats round the edge and also handrails if you stand and don't want to lose your balance.
On both my journeys on the tramway there was a member of staff in the cabins in case there was an issue and to operate the machinery.
An alternative form of transport to check out on your visit.

We happened to discover the Roosevelt Island Tramway by chance. As we had a Metrocard, the journey was free, so we hopped on solely for the novelty. It made for some stunning video footage of the Queenboro Bridge. We found that there wasn't much to do whilst on Roosevelt Island, so we simply hopped on back to Manhattan.

What a cool way to travel in nyc great way to get a different perspective and mode of travel .. the island has some nice walking paths.

Awesome experience for $5.50 round trip. Great view from the tram and once you get to Roosevelt Island there is a free bus that will take you around the entire island. The lighthouse at the end of the island is an added treat. This is a hidden gem and highly recommend it.

My visiting friends wanted to take the ride. We had great views of the Queensboro Bridge and the skyline.

This is a good way to get to Roosevelt Island; just the cost of a metro card . It runs regularly from one side to the other; although there not lots to see on the island. However it is worth a stroll around. Great views from the tramway. Masks are still required at the moment (March 4th). Definitely worth a little trip

If you have the time to ride the tramway over the river, it's well worth it if only for the experience and to say that you have done it.

I had always been curious about the Roosevelt Island Tram and finally got the chance when I was staying in Long Island City recently. The fare is the same as the subway, and a subway station is nearby, offering a useful connection. The ride is beautiful and offers a great view of the Queensboro Bridge, the United Nations and other East Side locations. I was worried as an acrophobe that it would be scary, but it is very stable. But like the subway, it is popular and you may have to stand.

I don't quite know what people are expecting. It's an oddity just like Roosevelt Island seems to be.
Treat it as a bit of fun with some good views and something different during your visit to the Big Apple.

It's funny that New York City has a cable car. It is a 3 minute drive to Roosevelt Island. You have a beautiful view. If you have a metro card, this ride is included.

This is an amazing fun ride! Plan your trip for 3:30 or 4 PM (ish) and take the tramway to Roosevelt Island. You can walk around the island and see the Cornell Tech campus, the Nellie Bly "heads" installation, or go to the GRADUATE Hotel and visit the bar in the Panorama Room! It is Marvelous! If you leave at dusk or later the lights of the city welcome you back as you cross the Queensboro Bridge. Breathtaking!

A fun, cost effective way to see more of the city and to visit Roosevelt island. The island is also accessible by train, but the views on the tram are better! You can only pay with metrocard, which you can buy onsite. The cost is around 2.50-2.75 (you do have to pay both ways). It’s a fairly brief ride, but you get a cool view of the city and the river. I had plenty of room because rides were limited to 13 people while I visited due to COVID 19, but from what I understand, it can get fairly crowded. The trams run every 10-15 minutes, more often during rush times. Definitely worth taking a ride.

The views are very good, ideal for taking some photos or video of downtown NY, my recommendation is that when you get on the right side of the car (and if you can in front), so you will have the best views and you can take photos without people.

Easy to get there by public transportation, cost of the activity 5,50$ per person, because you need to go back the same way. Nice views.

This is a "must do" when in NYC. The best laid plan would be to get on the tram around 4 PM for the cost of a subway ride, go over to Roosevelt Island and have a drink or three in the Panorama Room at the top of the Graduate Hotel. The food is great the people are even better and the views of Manhattan and the surrounding area are MAGNIFICENT! Get back on that tram and take pictures of the buildings at night from up above the Queensboro Bridge.

Read about the tram and thought I'd take it for a quick visit to Roosevelt Island. With one swipe of the Metrocard, I was on board and traveling above the city. Great views from the tram of the east side of Manhattan and drops you off in the middle of Roosevelt Island. Great way to see a different view of the city. Quick ride in each direction.

Beautiful view , the route , seems to fly over New York accessible as prices and especially leaves one every 6 minutes

We must of gone at a busy time because the cart was absolutely packed. As soon it was loaded, the waiting area was immediately full again.

This tram has amazing views and I feel it is the best kept secret in nyc that shouldn’t be. You can use your MTA card to take the tram to Roosevelt island for BEAUTIFUL views of the city.

Both myself and husband enjoyed the experience of travelling over to Roosevelt Island using the tram. Even though it only lasts a short while, the experience and views are amazing and a must if visiting NYC. Approximate cost of travel is only $2.75, very cheap compared to other attentions in NYC!

Great views on the city and something a bit different. A cheap way to spend a bit of time in NYC. We used our 7 day subway pass. Small queue each way but only a few minutes. Didn't stay long on the island but glad we did it.

Yes if you want to spend more time while you’re on the island you can take it to Manhattan and come back seeing the water from the higheit and spend your day on the island the car was full with people I can’t say that kids liked that

Nice little trip across to the island. Not much to see over there however a pleasant break from the subway darkness. Worth a detour to take the trip.

The tram driver will make sure you miss the tram because he doesn't care if you have somewhere to be

I had seen a video of this and thought it looked a fun way to travel. It’s free If you have a seven day metro pass (totally worth getting if you use metro more than 11 times - we used it over twenty) and takes you to a tiny island in the Hudson River. There is a small park and a very modern university campus there. We went on marathon Sunday and it was a tiny green peaceful haven from the craziness of manhattan with runners watchers visitors police etc The cafe in the park was very nice too with delicious ice cream at very reasonable prices. So many things in New York are expensive and involve queueing, it’s great to take time out for stuff like this and walking Brooklyn Bridge. The journey itself makes for great pics and vids but make sure you get close to front

WIN SOME – first the good news. Cost is the same as the subway – and if you have a subway pass you can use it. This means with an unlimited trips pass the tramway will cost no extra. Pretty good deal – value wise I’m rating it WELL ABOVE AVERAGE.
LOSE SOME – the view of the midtown MANHATTAN SKYLINE is over-hyped. One famous travel guide says it’s just about the best available. Nada – I can think of several better vantage points. Thing is the “tram” (it’s more a cable car) runs adjacent the QUEENSBORO BRIDGE superstructure which impedes views of the most iconic MIDTOWN BUILDINGS – THE EMPIRE STATE, CHRYSLER, UN yada. Unimpeded are those along and near the northern HUDSON SHORE but these are less impressive. On the basis of MANHATTAN SKYLINE VIEWS I rate it BELOW AVERAGE.
BUT - this is still a pretty scenic ride – check the cars way down there on the bridge, the river traffic, ROOSEVELT ISLAND etc. I’m 73 and still got a thrill dangling way up there adjacent the top arches of the bridge. On the basis of a GENERAL SCENIC EXPERIENCE I rate ABOVE AVERAGE.
SUM UP – adding WELL ABOVE AVERAGE for VALUE with either BELOW AVERAGE for the MANHATTAN SKYLINE or ABOVE AVERAGE for A GENERAL SCENIC EXPERIENCE always leaves a final rating of ABOVE AVERAGE.
TIPS – the MANHATTAN terminal is at E59th and 2nd av. Nearest subway is LEXINGTON AVE/50TH ST 2 blocks west. A neat way to access from the QUEENS side of the river is to walk across the QUEENSBORO BRIDGE. I can recommend this. Nearest subway on the QUEENS' side is QUEENSBORO PLAZA a few blocks east of the bridge approaches.
- The tram trip across and back including turn around takes about 20 minutes I didn’t have time to explore ROOSEVELT ISLAND but from what I understand this is a neat additional activity. There are plenty of additional areas to explore once back on the MANHATTAN side – nearest the terminal is BLOOMINGDALE’S. Note you can return from the island by SUBWAY – the ROOSEVELT ISLAND station is several hundred meters from the tram stop mainly thru parkland;

As this was possibly our last visit to Manhattan we wanted to do something different. 6$ each well worth it. Beautiful tram ride over the river alongside the Queensborough bridge. Landed on an incredibly clean space with a fantastic view of Manhattan. I would thoroughly recommend this to all visitors.

Incredible landscape, offers an excellent perspective of the urban area of NYC! Whenever I'm in NYC, I take this tour! Roosevelt Island is constantly renovating! The trip next to the bridge is a spectacle, you can see the construction system used at the time and travel imagining what it was like to build the bridge!

The tram is a super cool ride over the east river from Manhattan to Roosevelt Island alongside the Queensboro Bridge. It's around $2.50 one way and has a great view. The ride is a few minutes long and the tram is big enough to hold probably around 30 people. When I went it wasn't crowded at all. I would totes recommend visiting.

We included the Roosevelt Island Tramway in one of our Travel Vlogs and we want to be honest:
This unique way to see the stunning city views is certainly worth the way and at the price of a subway ride there is no reason not to go at least once. Enjoy!

....are almost free - well, that's not entirely true, because you should have a valid metro ticket, but you can "float" from 2nd Ave. (near Queensboro Bridge) on the cable car from Manhattan to Roosevelt Island for the low price of a metro ride.
Anyone who thinks the cable car is "something historic" should know that although it is the oldest (of originally only three, now two remaining) urban cable car in North America, it was only opened in 1976 (and renovated in 2010 - now as an independently operating aerial tramway system, contrary to the original concept of a classic aerial tramway).

My wife and I were in NYC for the weekend and happened upon the tram. The ride was fun and had a great view. This is not a destination activity but if you are around this area and need to kill some time go for it. It would be great for kids

One thing I love about visiting a large city like NYC is I will always find something new to do. This was a cheap and very enjoyable experience that I would recommend to anyone visiting or living in the city. Very easy to access from Manhattan and you can use the metro-card.
Views are very impressive across the river and the trip to the island is well worth the cost. Fantastic view of all the skyscrapers including empire state building. The smallpox hospital was also a fun find.

We went to the island of Rossevelt by metro and we came back by cable car, it was well crowded, but the view is spectacular. I felt pretty safe, not so shaky. It's worth it

I have been visiting NYC since the mid 1980’s but have never visited RI. It was a beautiful weather day and the tram ride to the island was so exciting!! The view was spectacular!! We didn’t have enough time to visit the entire island but we walked through almost half of the island. It was very clean and the visitor center was very informative. I would visit again.

As a fan of the Spider-Man movies I had to ride the Tramway despite my fear of heights.
Although the tram car lifts you over the east river it was an incredibly safe and smooth ride.
You do have to be quick to get a decent view but it’s well worth it as you can get some excellent views of East Manhattan.
The Island itself is worth a visit for a scenic walk too but be mindful that it can be full of tourists on the Tramway, our return journey was (including us)!
I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to see the sights at a cost of only $6!
If you are in no rush it’s worth getting in the queue but waiting for the next one to get the best view.

Well it’s $3 each way but we’ll worth the money. It’s a short trip but interesting and a fun thing to do to visit the island.

While it was a good option of getting into Midtown, we expected more from this and the view wasn't what we thought.
In the wait hall for the cabin they had heaters on though it was warm weather. Really hot 😓
Also the metro card reader did not work properly resulting in a discussion with a rude officer 😡
Probably we just had bad luck this time 🤷♂️

This is an excellent way to get between Roosevelt Island and Manhattan. Think oversized ski gondola that happens to be crossing the East River. Excellent view of the surrounding area! $2.90 USD for an adventurous ride.

The locals call it tramway but really it's a cable car which transports you up and over the East River. The views from a top are just amazing and it's so quiet above the bustling Big Apple. It's well hidden on East 59th along from Central Park but well worth locating. It's part of the MTA so valid cards etc. are accepted.

Definitely a thing you must visit! The tram had beautiful views of the city and the ride is not too long. We rode it at night but even in the day would be good views as well.

One of the best times to ride the tram is at sunset but really any time is spectacular - not to mention, very cheap!

The cable car that takes travelers between Manhattan and Rossevelt Island offers panoramic views of Manhattan Island, Rossvelt Island and the River. The cost is very cheap and you pay for both the cards used in NY like the Metro Card, the OMNI card or any credit card. It is worth it for this walk through the heights across the river, a nice experience.

I have ridden on many aerial trams and this one is the shortest and least impressive. Been there, done that!

We hopped on the tramway to see the city views. It is quick, clean and efficient .
Having the 7 day subway pass allowed us to use the cable car for free.
The kids loved it and the views were magnificent.

A short walk east from the 59th Str/Lexington subway station is the Tramway that, although is only a short 5 minute ride, offers great views from high above. When making videos of the City, we could not overlook this unique chance to make spectacular footage of the streets below, knowing this tramway was used in the movie HEROES with Henry Winkler.

This is a must when visiting NYC , 6 dollars return, walk around the island, even stop for a slice off pizza and cheeky wine if needed... the island community has everything and worth visit.

So glad someone told me about this cable ride as it was adorable. For $3 each way you can ride, a metro card works here too. It was a beautiful day so we had such nice views of the city & river. We walked around a bit on the island and then rode back, loved it!

A hidden gem - tucked away in Upper East Manhattan - the tram offers great aerial views of the New York skyline. It was only $3 for a one way ride (I believe it is free with a MetroCard). Although most of the passengers appeared to be residents and commuters, I would definitely recommend this as a quick and inexpensive touristy thing to do. The pictures are worth it!

Is a cable car you can use the metro card at the same fare. Ride every 7' you can see the queensboro bridge and the sky line

Travel to a quiet relaxing place away from the hectic pace of Manhattan on this alternate means of travel. You won't be squished in with a bunch of people if you go midday. As you glide across the river, the views of the Queensborough Bridge, the East river and the NY buildings are wonderful. Everyone can see because of the huge wrap around windows. The nice part is once you arrive on Roosevelt Island, which is in the middle of the river, you can hop on a free shuttle bus which accommodates many stops and runs almost to the end of the island. From there you can walk a park path further if you like.
The Tram is free with your Metro card, and we took the subway back to SoHo to save a little time there. The island has many walks, benches and opportunities for great photos of NY from a distance. Shady trees, coffee places, very relaxing when the city gets too much for you.

So worth a visit, just for the views. If you have a weekly subway pass, it won’t cost you anything. Not sure how much there is to see on the island but worth a walk around.

And inexpensive too, probably faster than the interminable escalators to the subway, great view of the queensboro bridge and the river, you can even use the metro card!

Loved it . Fab experience. We had metro cards . Brilliant views . So glad we visited and did this . Seen this on so many films. A must for me to do!

Terrible experience!! Overcrowded and long lines! Took 2 hours just to board and was filled with pushy rude people.

We didn't realize that we didn't have to pay (we had the NYC $33 metro card) but that was such a wonderful perk.
Wish we had taken both ways...but by the time we figured it out, we were heading home.
Go to the Island on the cable car...walk around the island, eat, walk more, and cable car back again.

Nice side trip. Recommend taking the Astoria ferry from Pier 11 and finishing with the tram ride. Great views of the East river and east side of Manhattan.

Having caught the ferry to Roosevelt Island, it was fun to return to Manhattan on the cable car. Takes under five minutes and the price is the same as a ride on the subway.

Great views, not too busy, and for a couple of pound a really great experience, Starbucks on the island and a little grocery store so you can spend a bit of time in the quiet outside of Manhattan

This is a great cheap thing to do (especially if you have an unlimited MetroCard). The journey over and back to Roosevelt Island is something I recommend doing, especially if you like the idea of soaring high above the streets and in-between buildings.
The tramway is smooth and comfortable and will take you to a part of Manhattan that is well worth visiting, Roosevelt Island is a must see and do!

Nothing to see here. lines too long, views are boring. Tram views are blocked by bridge, island lacks views, and you have to pay twice to come and go....

This was our 2nd voyage on the tram, but we brought along a married couple with us, and we were all impressed with the views. Had a smooth ride over the East River, then stayed a while to explore the southern end of Roosevelt Island.

Riding the Roosevelt Tramway was so much fun - I wish it took longer!
Entry was quick and payable on my metrocard. There were no queues and it was clearly signposted where to go etc. The tram itself was clean, today and felt very safe. It moved at a slow enough pace so that you could look out of the window at the great view. The carriage was almost empty on both my trips so not sure how much fun it would be if it was full?
It's a novel way to travel! I wish my commute to work at home was like that!

This is a great unknown tram ride right across the city , which has great views. Its used mainly as a commuter tram so best to avoid rush hours. For the price of a bus ride you get a great arial view of Manhattan. Not much on Roosevelt island to see but still worth a ride.

Highly recommend checking this travel option out! Line moves pretty fast (must have metrocard), views were great and Roosevelt Island is a nice place to walk around.

I wanted to ride the Tram on top like Captain Fatbelly but got turned down so I just swam across the East River like Kramer did.

I have been to NYC so many times and finally had the time to take this tramway ride over to Roosevelt Island.
Wow!
I am so happy that we did. My daughter said the view from the Island was the best part of that day. She just loved it.
It's only a Metro card ride over and then we walked around a bit then took the regular Metro train back into Manhattan.

Want to visit and see this island and we were more excited to take the tram over. It's a qui
ck trip over the river, runs frequently and didn't notice much movement as it moved.
One one sites I really wanted to visit was the Octagon Building. Unfortunately, it is being remolded.
Lighthouse was a nice walk and the bus service is free.

Easy to get to the beautiful Island. Price is like for a regular metro or bus ride. Very comfortable and breath taking!

The aerial tram, located less than a five-minute walk from the only hotel on Roosevelt Island was our preferred mode of transportation into the heart of Manhattan. The tram runs frequently (every 7.5 to 15 minutes) and delivers the passengers to E 59th St & 2nd Avenue. The nearest subway station in Manhattan is a 3 min walk at Lexington Av/59 St. The cost for the tram is very reasonable, $2.90 for a one-way trip, much cheaper than the $50 cab ride we took later in the day from Central Park back to Roosevelt Island. We did experience some issues trying to purchase tickets from the vending machine at the Roosevelt Island tramway station, but the staff at the hotel informed us that we could pay by tapping our contactless credit card at the turnstile. If you do want to purchase from the vending machines, be warned that the machine can dispense very little change so use small bills only. The only downside is the ride is so short there is not much time to enjoy the view. The tram can also be crowded so board early if you want to stand by the windows.

Good to do if you want to see a different part of New York. Quick and convenient way to travel between midtown and Roosevelt Island.

It’s a complete must - brilliant views and all for the cost of an MTA ticket. Roosevelt island itself is great but even if you ride the tram straight back it’s still a great time.

It's called a "tramway" but in fact it's a cable car from Manhattan to Roosevelt Island in the middle of the East River. It's fun, a bit crowded and the island has great views of East Side Manhattan, a there are some historical monuments and parks. Generally the island is a bit bland.

Easy access to Roosevelt Island; only thing was that the employees at the station were not too very helpful.

I visited NYC many times but it is the first time I do this. It is cheap, you can use the MetroCard and you do not need to take it both ways. I came back to Manhattan in the subway. Not so nice but faster. Enjoyed the ride and the visit to Roosevelt Island a great deal.

The tram ride is very nice and the views are incredible and its very impressive to see how built up Roosevelt island is. The only thing is riding the tram is a pain because they require QUARTERS or a Metro card, and they don't have a quarter machine!

One of my favourite experiences in NYC. Even though it's only about a 2 minute ride, it's a fun change from walking, or riding the subway!
The cable car rides beside the Queensboro Bridge, and even waiting for the tram to begin is an interesting sight.
Note that there is a subway station on Roosevelt Island, so you don't have to come back the same way.
There's not a heap to do on the island, but there's certainly enough to spend a few hours there.

Fun trip across the east river for the cost of a subway ride. We used our metro card to pay. It only takes a few minutes to cross to Roosevelt Island but the views are good.
Trams run regularly, including weekends.
We went over by tram and returned on the subway.
Recommended when in the area,

The cable car goes back and forth between Manhattan and Rossevelt Island.
Access costs the price of a metro ticket, if you have the Metro Card it's included.
The crossing is quick but for the view it is worth the walk.

The Roosevelt Island Tram is a fun and free (with your MetroCard) way to see more of the city. It's a quick ride to Roosevelt Island and heading back to Manhattan you get a fun view. Just steps from Serendipity 3, so a fun after dinner activity.

A cheaper and convenient option to travel to Manhattan side. Beautiful view. Instead of stuck in the hravy traffic, tram serve s better option.

It was a little out of the way. Great little station (one tram was out of commission that day). Few people. Great view of the city while going across the river. Price of one subway ride.

The Roosevelt Tramway is free with Ne York Bahticket.
The crossings take only a few minutes.
There are parks and beautiful photo motifs

It seems incredible that there is a cable car in New York as if we were in the high mountains, yet it is so! In a few minutes it connects Manhattan to Roosevelt Island running parallel on the Queensboro Bridge. Recommended because it offers unprecedented panoramic views of the city skyline, among other things it is included in the Metrocard or can be taken at a cost of 3.25 dollars for a single ride. It is preferable to go away from peak times when it is less crowded, so that you can admire the view with more peace of mind.

Not worth it. The cable car runs at the height of the bridge, so that is the only view it has. It does NOT have good views of Manhattan. Just the river and the bridge. Don't waste time on this attraction.

My daughter seen this on Tik tok we were well impressed with this tramway it costs $2.75 each you get great views both ways and when you get to Roosevelt island you get fantastic views of Manhattan sky line

I read about this Tram and it was a great experience. I love the island as well. We walked to the Four Freedoms monument and enjoyed the beautiful views and relaxing atmosphere so close to Manhattan.

wonderful views of the city for a rock bottom price.I took the tram over and took the F train back into the city with a free transfer.

the visit to the islet is certainly not a favor, nothing particularly interesting, if not an oasis of tranquility compared to Manhattan, very nice to get there by suspended tram, cheap.

Short trip of 4 minutes next to Queensboro Bridge. Nice photo opportunity towards downtown. On Roosevelt Island take the ferry to Brooklyn or Wall Street, on your way you will have a close view of also Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge .

This is a very cheap and interesting way to see some fantastic views across the city, avoid rush hour as is used by commuters too.

I'm not sure how this has such great reviews. I had to wait in line for 2+ hours just for a 5 minute anticlimactic ride. I was pushed and shoved onto the tram and we were all packed into this tiny cable car like sweaty sardines. The tram was so crowded I couldn't even get a decent view. This was a horrible experience that I absolutely do not recommend. Use your time more wisely and go see a museum or a park.

Really fun and relaxed way to spend a couple.of hours in NYC away from the hustle and bustle of manhatten

Went to Roosevelt Island on the subway and, after a lovely walk, took the tramway back to Manhattan. The ride over the Hudson river only lasts 10 minutes but it is a fun way to have a different perspective. Even better you use your met card and treat it like normal transport.

Staff where so friendly and helpful and was not that busy. I got great views and pictures. Well worth going on it but go at right times id say not during rush hour.

The Roosevelt Tram is an easy way to get a different view of NYC. There isn’t much to do on the island. When we went there was literally NOTHING open to eat so don’t go when you’re hungry.

Yes, it is public transport and cost just $2.75 to get to Roosevelt Island. The maximum elevation of 250 ft and total trip time about 10 minutes. With a great view of Queensborough Bridge, Roosevelt Island and Manhattan it looks more like some kind of attraction then public transportation. One advice - avoid rush hours.

After multiple visits to Manhattan, I was finally able to add this to my itinerary. It was convenient since we were able to use our Metro Card. We waited for a quick 15 minutes as it made its way back to Manhattan from Roosevelt Island. No big deal, I was able to take pictures and video of the tram as it made its way in. It was a cramped and crowded tram ride, (mostly tourists). I didn’t care, I stood toward the front and I was able to snag great pictures of the scenery. Honestly, there's not much to do at Roosevelt Island. I did however enjoy the quick stroll down the few shops. It was peaceful and silent . A much needed rest from the busy Manhattan noise. We sat at the small park adjacent the Starbucks. We snagged great pics of Manhattan from there. I would love to return at night to see the skyline. We took the subway back to Manhattan.

A smooth, clean ride with a Metro card.
We took the tram on Monday morning and we got coffee when we got to Roosevelt Island. After walking around a bit, we got the tram back.
It’s a nice view and experience.

It was such horrible experience. I was promised great views of New York, but you can't see anything since it is so crowded and people were pushing the whole way. On top of that when I got to Roosevelt Island, there was nothing there! Just a bunch of apartment buildings and more frustrated tourists. It's a scam. Don't go!

We had a free afternoon and decided to take the tram across to Roosevelt Island. We actually very much enjoyed it getting away from oh so busy Manhattan. I felt like a local as there were many locals on the tram. We absolutely loved the views. We used our metrocard so no cost to get across.

Did the Roosevelt Island walk using the very cool tramway to access the island. My Metro card made it a free ride. The walk itself offered a ton of photo ops. The island needs way more info plaques about what I was seeing. Many of the buildings have fascinating histories. Great place for a picnic in the summer.

Way over rated. Couldn’t see anything from the tram. We were packed in like sardines. View of Manhattan ok but nothing like from Brooklyn. Nowhere good to eat. One old lighthouse. Waste of time.

It's easy to use your phone to tap to pay the fare and the trams run every 7-10 minutes. I understand it can get pretty crowded, but there was no line to take the tram when we went. The views of the river and city and 59th Street Bridge are great as you glide over to Roosevelt Island. It's a fun way to get to the island.

It was a fun little adventure.
The round-trip will take less than 15 minutes and cost less than six dollars. BUT you must have a METRO CARD! Plus the card stations at the tramway (at least when we were there) only took cash to fill up your card!
Be one of the first ones to enter the tram to have a seat. There is very limited seating.
Offers some great views!

The views were beautiful. I didn't give 5 stars because the lines were long and the trams were crowded. The line for the people who already have money on their metro card is much quicker than the line for those who don't. The ride itself doesn't take long but account for more time because of the lines. You have to pay both ways.

Doesn't get you far on your journey but a nice way to take a short hop.
The system works well, easy to use, lot's of capacity, very frequent.
Nitpicking but the same trip fee as for going anywhere on the island seems a little overpriced but at the same time it's only $2.75 so maybe the subway is actually underpriced!
Do it!

If you are traveling using the tram you will find a very crowded, very unfriendly, noting to see if tram is crowded.

This is yet again another local New Yorker’s recommended.
The view outside the tramway aren’t that great, but it’s over the Hudson River so that enough for me tbh.
It comes every 5 minutes and every time (going to the island and back to Manhattan) I got a seat to relax.
It’s probably best to go on this if you had some plans on Roosevelt Island, but do what you want.
I sat at the riverside overlooking the River and taking selfie in one of the most blinding sun experiences I’ve ever had in my life.
6/10

What a fun thing to do! It's a short ride over to Roosevelt Island. Not a lot to do once you're on the island but you can take a quick walk and then take the subway or tram back. The view is spectacular.

For the price of a metro-card ride you can get amazing views of the city. It was so fun! I had no idea the tramway existed. Very easy to get on and off. Fun if you want to explore and do something different.

Even with this cable car you can enjoy a beautiful view; I recommend the outward journey on the left side of the cabin. You travel with the same metro ticket. On the island you will find tranquility and peace.

We really enjoyed the tramway - it provided great views of Manhattan and was a great way to see the city as well as explore the quiet island and Four Freedoms Park.

A++++ the ONLY WAY TO TRAVEL!!!
We took this tram from Manhattan to Roosevelt island. it was spectacular! Lots of terrific siteseeing, easy to pick up a ticket, only a 10 minute wait, not overcrowded, Plenty of ventilation in the tram. Super-smooth ride!!!

The tramway station is a couple of blocks away from where we are staying in NYC and we decided to go for a ride over to Roosevelt Island after an early dinner. We have weekly Metrocards for the subway, which let us ride the tramway at no extra cost.
It was lovely to see the city from a different angle and to escape the hustle and bustle of Manhattan for a bit. We enjoyed the views of the city skyline as we strolled along the river, especially as twilight descended and the lights came on.
If we had more time, it would be nice to explore more of the island too. There is actually a tourist information bureau for the island near the tramway station, but it was closed by the time we arrived. Maybe next time!

Easy to find, just a few minutes walk from Bloomingdales, paid $3 each, the views were amazing, had to get off the other end and pay to come back again but glad we did it.

It was adventurous yet relaxing. Would highly recommend to anyone who never been to this tramway trip. You can just walk on the island for a while with your loved one until coming back to chaotic main city life

Great fun. Wonderful views during day & evening hours!
While in Roosevelt Island take time to see the old architecture and new buildings; and stroll along the waterway!

The tram is a great way to get from the city to Roosevelt Island. There was a very short wait for the tram to arrive. The tram I took wasn't crowded and we all had excellent viewing from all directions.

The cable car was recommended to us by a friend. It's totally different to Manhattan on RI side.
It's $3 each way and you have to buy a ticket both ways.
Great views though. Loved it....

Fast way with stunning view to reach Roosevelt Island
Possible access with Metrocard
Roosevelt Memorial and old hospital on one side and city on the other side of the island
A great free* thing to do in NYC
If you already have a Metro ticket, with a daily/weekly pass, this is included! It only takes 5 minutes and we got the Subway back from Manhattan, but it was still a cool free* experience.
