Pleasantly surprised

By Lu Z |

We were in Berkeley for lunch. Needed to find a park for 3 kids to running around. Tilden park came up during a quick web search. So we went without any expectations. The carousel ride was fun with only three of them on it. Then we went to lake anza. The trail around lake started plain, nut got more and more interesting as we moved on. We saw weird shaped tree stomps, a duck couple sunbathing on the log, three turtles resting and one small lizard. The trail was muddy and got muddier as it went and consequently escalated intensity level of the trail and also fun. We ended up with mud all over the shoes and some on the clothes. But it was definitely a fun afternoon. Highly recommended! And most of all, all free!

My favorite place in the east bay

By Frederick R |

Easily accessible and something for everyone here:

- hiking
- swimming
- golfing
- little farm (free)
- steam trains

If you're in the area - go!

If you have extra time, take a stroll

By Corrie |

Think, this is a work in progress. There are some plant destination signs, need more. Parking can be a hassle. You can spend a lot of time here

Gorgeous park, incredible views, lots to do!

By Eileen T |

Great place to see incredible Bay area views! Beautiful picnic areas for friends and family. The carousel is amazing with snack bar and lots if history, and the mini steam train is a must for kids and adults, alike,a beautiful ride through the redwoods!

By Safari798192 |

Great for a dog lots of grass in the spring after rain good place for a walk/hike and nice veiws BEWARE OF MOUNTAIN LIONS (occasionally they will come down looking for food after there is no game P. S. Most likely won't happen in the winter because there is more food for pretty)

Beautiful quiet expanses of wild terrain

By cant83 |

Amazing experience so close to Berkeley. Paths were well marked, views of the bay and Golden Gate Bridge were fantastic .

Always love our visits to Tilden.

By christopherpee |

I hike here at least three times a week as it's close to our home. When we have visitors we always bring them here. Everybody loves Tilden, especially some of the lesser known spots. And hey, you'll have to find them on your own!

Great views, great trails

By Will S |

There is a hilly, challenging golf course with great views everywhere. Lots of trails, at leat one of which is paved for 2 miles.

Great local hikes, minutes from UC Berkeley

By nayominayomi |

Start at Inspiration Point, and pick up a trail map from the trailhead just off the parking lot that leads to Nimitz Way. The map details about 10 different hikes that you can get to (or branch off from), starting from that trailhead! Magnificent Eucalyptus trees and soaring views of lakes and the Bay from various vantage points.

Beautiful place

By Nelr15 |

Wonderful open park. Great for hiking picnics and walking. Check out the observatory and the merry go round.

super for children; gigantic park; big uphill drive; fantastic viewing

By Tony V |

the 10 yr old girls loved this place because of the farm animal area. the parents love having grassy areas for relaxing away from the bay area traffic scenes. good for sunbathing on a clear afternoon. plenty of places to visit within the park. you should be ok with driving up steep hills to get there. restrooms clean.being liquids for drinking. couple miles off the beaten path.

Beautiful!

By 9TNine |

A lovely park and vantage point to see Berkeley, Oakland and San Francisco. Beautiful eucalyptus trees.

Stunning Park on the Crest of the Berkeley Hills

By N_skier |

Tilden Regional Park sits on 2000 or so acres along the crest of the Berkeley Hills, running North-South, more or less. There are walking (paved) trails and hiking trails. There is a carousel, a lake (Lake Anza) with a beach and swimming, a golf course, a steam train ride, and dozens of picnic sites, many of which can be reserved for large, special occasions, like weddings.
Part of the East Bay Regional Parks District, Tilden has been around for a very long time. I remember riding the carousel as a child. And it remains a wonderful public space. We went to a wedding reception there last summer, and almost any time of year is appropriate for a refreshing walk (it's easier to find parking early in the morning).

Tilden Nature Area and Wildcat Peak

By NorthStarSteve |

Started hiking up to Wildcat Peak when I was about 10 years old with my family back in the mid 1960's. Been back many times since and always memorable. Incredible view of the Bay Area, Golden Gate Bridge and a very clear days the Farallon Islands! Bring lunch or snack and certainly some water especially on hotter summer days. You'll see Red Tailed Hawks and Turkey Vultures soaring above and maybe the occasional deer. On the east side you'll see San Pablo Dam Reservoir and the expanse to Briones Park. Stop by The Little Farm and feed the pigs and make a day of it, enjoy!

Lots to Do in Tilden Park

By babobear1 |

This park has a bit of everything! We did some hiking out of the Inspiration Point area and enjoyed the walk. Although we did not get a good view of the Bay area due to heavy clouds and fog, our son who lives in the area assured us it is magnificent. We walked among the cattle that roam along the trails. My husband played the golf course and enjoyed it while I went to the Lawrence Hall of Science and then the botanical garden. The Hall of Science was interesting and is great for adults but geared more for children. The botanical garden is a peaceful respite and very well done. Native species were the focus and there were lots of trails and quiet areas to enjoy.

Great for kids

By Bill S |

Definitely worth visiting if you're in Berkeley with kids. We did the train, the little zoo, and the carousel.

Glorious Get-Away

By Wayne C |

This park of 740 acres bordering Berkeley, Kensington & Orinda, Ca., in East Bay is a great escape from traffic jams, city living with homes back to back and belly to belly. There's a golf course here, a lake for swimming & more.

family hike

By GKohler |

The view of the San Francisco Bay area are stunning and the parks trails and attractions are very family friendly

Memorial Day short hike till the wildcat peak :)

By Heliana Mano |

We opted for a short loop this time for Memorial Day 2017. We started at Jewel Lake - Sylvian Trail- Wildcat Peak and coming down from Laurel trail and joining with Sylvian trail. Less than 4 miles in about 2 hours. A good short hike for those who are beginners or don't have too much time at hand and want to soak in some great views!

Spotted gorgeous flours like california poppy, spring pink vetch and few other wildflowers. Lots of berries all over the trail too :)

Beautiful views!

By bike_bliss |

This park provided a challenging hike and incredible views of the Bay Area. Definitely recommend for an afternoon outdoors.

Quiet Place for a Picnic

By Brad B |

We drove to Tilden Park on a Sunday afternoon to have a picnic. Clean, quiet and lacking crowds. We were worried that we would not find a table but eventually we found a table with partial shade and partial direct sun...everyone was happy. Nobody bothered us and we had a nice relaxing time.

I look forward to more exploring on the next visit.

Amazing

By NorthfordBill |

Breathtakingly beautiful scenery, great wildlife, amazing botanical gardens, great roads and wonderful hiking trails.

Lake Anza is a fun place for swimming with kids

By Stacktracy |

Lake Anza is a great day at the beach with your kids! Right in the middle of an urban area. There is swimming, hiking or just lazing around. The swimming hole is divided into areas for little ones as well as adults who want to do laps. There are always critters around too like turtles and ducks.

Scenic View

By Expedition675224 |

Type of visit: parents visiting adult son who works in San Fran. Beautiful park, great hike, wonderful view of bay and Golden Gate Bridge. Steep climb.

Perfect Family Adventure

By Jessica C |

We visited this weekend with our two children ages 2 and 4 and we all thoroughly enjoyed the day. We started at the nature area and farm for an hour and it was so fun to interact with cows, chickens, sheep, and see the ducks, rabbits, and wild turkeys! If you bring lettuce and celery you are able to feed the animals.
Then we drove over to the steam trains and thoroughly enjoyed the little 15 minute ride. It was quite busy this weekend but there was plenty of overflow parking and the train accommodates a lot of people per ride so we didn’t have to wait long. We had a blast, and will definitely plan to come back again!

Walk along Nimitz Way for a gorgeous view.

By wrygirl |

Tilden Park has something for everyone. A historic merry-go-round and a little farm for the children, a Nature Center, many picnic areas, a field for ball games, and Lake Anza for swimming. And many miles of hiking trails, some steep, some flat, some sunny, some shady, with the chance to see a variety of wildlife. Nimitz Way, at the crest of the hills, is paved much of the way and offers a gorgeous view on clear days. Be aware that the other trails can be muddy in the Winter And early Spring, so wear boots.

Something for everyone

By Barbara M |

Tilden has everything. Natural beauty; many many lovely picnic groves; steam trains; a great botanical garden with everything from succulents to redwoods; a place to see farm animals; even a merry-go-round. Something for all ages. Our family loves to go there.

Great family place with lots to do and some fantastic trails

By howard1652 |

Tilden is a wonderful place to visit with small children; take them on the Carousel, the steam trains or the Little Farm. The park is big enough to have a nice uncrowded hike with or without your dog. There is also a very nice little lake (Anza) with a beach and swimable water. The ridge trails have 360 degree views and places you can see San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge. If you are into plants, there is an elegant botanical garden. You can reserve a picnic site in the woods for a big party. Really, the place is wonderful with many things to do and it is relatively laid back most days.

Great Park for hiking

By Alec D |

When I'm visiting Oakland/Berkeley my friends an I go hiking often. Tilden Regional Park is a great choice. The trails are fairly accessible for most people, the views are great.

Getting Married?

By Jonathan F |

nice place - just print out direction for those coming in from out of town - there is NO CELL SERVICE - PERIOD.

Great Wide open park to hike

By WaywardWander9 |

Tilden is a large park/open space where you can spend a good day hiking the hills of Berkeley. Lots of trails and you can even swim in the lake in the summer.

Wonderful natural areas

By GonzoZap |

Great areas for walks hikes and family outings. If you want to be outside there is something for you somewhere in Tilden.

I love Tilden!!!

By Leonadance |

This place is dear to my heart! I lived in Berkeley for ~ 8 years and would regularly hike the Sky View trail. You can meander for hours and not get bored. The air smells nice, the views are amazing. I highly recommend it for short and long excursions.

Perfect place to unwind

By 745CatherineK |

A few minutes away from hustle and bustle and you can enjoy great views of the bay, Mt diablo, San Francisco and Mt Tam. This is my go to place to unwind, walk the dog and feel alone. Plenty of hiking trails where you might meet just one person the whole time.. feels far far away and yet so close.

Trains, hiking and more

By Ninaad D |

We have visited Tilden Park several times in the past year. Our toddler loves riding the trains and we enjoy the nature walks. The train rides are fun for the entire family. The train models are very well designed and lot of fun to explore. Pack a picnic and enjoy the entire day here.

Beautiful spot

By Swimlaw |

Lots to see and do. Just sitting and looking into the distance was perfect! Too bad the steam train area isn't open during the week. The gardens are amazing!

Nice hiking area

By A Y M |

Expect to encounter the occasional harmless grass snake and watch for poop on the trails, but otherwise a very nice area for hiking. Views at Vollmer Peak a bit pinched by communications towers but still good. We had no problems, but advise people to leave nothing in the car, and leave seats down to show no reason to break in (Tilden is an area frequented by car thieves)

My" go to" place

By Dawn D |

I live less than 10 minutes away. Be sure to pick up a map at the Nature office by the Little Farm (follow good signage in the park). You can hike here almost anytime and experience all kinds of terrain from open hills with views of the SF Bay to wild tree filled canyons. Well marked trails that can make you feel like you are in the wilderness. Yet, nearby, plenty of developed picnic grounds as well as "Little Farm", Merry-Go-Round, Lake Anza for swimming. Short hikes and long hikes-you can't ask for more just minutes from Berkeley

Tilden is magical

By hanleyjay |

We spent the afternoon in Tilden. Such a special place! Amazing scenery and views of SF, great trails, feels like an untouched paradise only moments away from Berkeley. Go there - you won't be disappointed.

Fantastic views, Day hiking trails can take you as far as you'd like to go

By Brad M |

Absolutely love coming here. I have come to hike or bike with my girls since they were tiny (now adults). We always make time to go for a hike anytime my daughter is back from college - usually to the end of the paved trail and back (4+ miles each way). You can also hike down to the Little Farm which is another fun place to go (just adults or with kids), but I'd recommend a car pickup from there as the hike back is very uphill.

a gem in Berkeley

By tichita_23 |

this park is incredible, only a few miles from Berkeley there is another nice Botanical Garden, this time was only of natural plants growing In California, plants that doesn't needs so much water to be fed. so many wood bridges to cross, clear water coming from the high mountains, and making a nice chant for our ears. The shade of those typically trees that grows only in this region of the map. Birds, singing waters and shade is the only thing you need to forget you are in this fabulous land. Enjoy and send love to the whole universe.

It's wonderful to have this much beauty close-by

By Sam H |

I love to hike here, to wander, to appreciate all the wildlife in Tilden's hills and valleys. Each season has its own individual pleasures. I'm not a bike rider, but it is favored by cyclists. There are many little eco-zones within the park, so there is plenty of variety.

Wonderful park

By zoyapunk |

We come every time we visit Berkeley, and it is always great. Picnic facilities, tons of hiking, lakes, playground, a small farm with animals to feed (bring celery or lettuce), a steam train to ride, and a fabulous carousel with an interesting history. A great example of why I wish I lived in Northern California.

Tilden Park - Wonderful urban park getaway

By Kenneth E |

Tilden Park is one of the oldest urban parks in the East Bay Regional Park system. The park consists of several areas of interest and includes many miles of hiking trails. One can choose to hike or ride horse over the large unspoiled park as well as visit the historic carousel, swim at Lake Anza, visit the mini farm or play a round of golf at the rated 18 hole course. Very close to Berkeley and Oakland in the East Bay Hills, Tilden Park is accessible by public transportation. Bus lines are well marked. Terrific views from many locations inside the park as well.

Great Regional Park

By brabra2013 |

There are many trails to walk in Tilden, some with terrific views of the bay. Lots of plant life endemic to the region. A pony ride and a beautiful merry-go-round. A bus goes up there or it's easy to drive and places to park in different parts of the park.

I live in Berkeley and have been to Tilden Park countless times in the past 40 years.

Great place for BBQ

By Cris Paulsen |

If you are looking for a nice spot for a BBQ with a big group of friends, the Tilden park has a great BBQ area. It is perfect for families with kids. The weather is usually nice but it can get really cold in the afternoon.

World class Park

By Scott |

Tilden regional Park is a world class park. This park is a must-see for locals and tourists alike. You'll find everything ranging from model trains that the family can ride on to a miniature farm for the kids to visit animals, oh and adults can visit the animals too. There's tons of hiking and some of the best views of the San Francisco Bay area.

something for everyone

By Yalda M |

such a gem for those of us that live in berkeley. there are beautiful hikes for all levels, an animal farm, a steam train, a merry go round, beach (lake anza) in the summer, and lots of great picnic and party sites. i love tilden park!!

Something for everyone

By Cathy C |

Tilden Park is large and woodsy with dramatic views of the San Francisco, the Bay and surrounding areas. It has a petting zoo, train ride, old fashion carousel, hiking trails, golf course and event center for weddings, etc.

Sublime Regional Park

By Robert C |

Tilden is named after one of the great conservationists of the last century who helped create and conserve this wonderful park. The East Bay Regional Park District has more acres in its parks than any regional park system in the world, and the Park District is strongly supported by the community. Tilden has a great freshwater lake to swim in, a ridiculously fun public golf course, 85,000 acres of parkland, stunning views and vistas, miles of horse, bike and hiking trails, lots of picnic areas with amenities that can be reserved, the Brazilian Room that can be reserved for parties , weddings and such. It is an amazing recreational resource, free of charge, spanning miles along the top and east side Berkeley Hills.

Great local park- Good hiking

By Peter O |

This park is easily accessible by car, bike or public transportation. There is something for everyone -- good hiking trails, swimming, children's educational activities and play (a steam train trip, a carousel, playgrounds, and tons of open space). We visit this park at least once or twice a month and never tire of the hiking trails -- there's everything from easy to moderate available.

Large park with lots to do

By AVLwriter |

Situated in the Berkeley hills, Tilden has a variety of recreational opportunities. We went to Lake Anza, where there is a lovely picnic area with tables and grills, a number of walking trails, and swimming at a small beach. A rugged trail (rocks and tree roots) loops around the lake, but you can just do part of it to get some nice views of the lake. It is free... A nice plus.

Nature preserve and park minutes from downtown Berkeley

By LawrenceofBerkeley |

I have visited Tilden park frequently for more than 60 years since I first went at the age of 10. It is but a few minutes drive from the urban East Bay. Even a leisurely drive through its winding roadways is a pleasure. But it’s animal farm is renowned for its interest for children. It’s hilly public golf course is popular with golfers who like to walk. And it’s many long walking and hiking trails through ones and two ridges with spectacular views offer wonderful opportunities to leave urban life behind and, if wished, to view it from grand heights. These are but a few of its many attractions. I go out of my way to take visitors from elsewhere to see it and they are always pleasantly surprised.

National Park feel yet close to the city.

By mdepalma57 |

Great hiking trails and views of the east bay hills as well as the whole bay area. Also a good place to take young kids - carousel, petting zoo, swimmable lake.

Steam train is fun for all ages

By GPToak |

Mostly kids this is a fun thing to do with older people too. A short steam train ride but enjoyable too

The carousel

By Daniel S |

The carousel at Tilden Park is an excellent place to tak children for a lovely outing, and can easily be combined with a picnic and hike, and ride on the steam trains for a full day. There are SO many things to do at Tilden! This is a wonderful place for the entire family, including people of all ages.

We were married here in one of the picnic sites!

By jaimeleecurrier |

I cannot say enough about our local wilderness treasure, Tilden Park! Mikes and miles of hiking trails, ponds, lakes, waterfalls. I love it!

Nice

By Giuliana U |

You can see dears, lot of green, the is also a lake with a small beach. It is a perfect place for picnic

Scenic hike to Wildcat Peak!

By Susan S |

Great place! We did a lovely 3.5 mile hike to Wildcat Peak. Got spectacular views of SF Bay, Golden Gate Bridge, and Oakland-Bay Bridge. Shady trail. Wildflowers. But LOTS of poison oak--watch out!

Out in the Wild

By Janice B |

This is a wonderful Regional Park. Lots of Trails for hiking ad great look out spots where the hills roll on for miles and miles. However, behind a hill, in a canyon or off a slip road, you'll come across some great activities for the family. There is the 'Little Farm' where one can feed the animals. The Merry-Go-Round, which looks wonderful all lit up a Christmas time. The there are real horses to ride. A swimming pool, golf course and miniature trains. When my boys were young I frequented this place every weekend - always something to do!

Beautiful Park even in a drought

By chrislG1692VP |

Come for the attractions stay for the trees. I'm from Canada so the plants and trees left me gobsmacked. The botanical garden is a compact treat of awesome and remarkable plants.

The merry go round was closed when I was there but looked a bit cheesey.

We didn't swim (too cold). But I don't think I have ever seen a cordoned off, charge-for-admission lake in the middle of a park. Head on collision with my Canadian sensibilities I suppose.

It's a bit of a drive-up park. Walking the roads is not comfortable. No shoulder or sidewalk and plenty of fast moving cars.

Stick to the trails.

Important Green Expanse

By Thomas V |

This is a huge regional park and an important part of the lungs of the Bay Area. Lots of kids stuff here, plus picnic areas and lots of hiking trails.

Huge Resource

By Thomas V |

We did a little walk here today and enjoyed the great outdoors. On a Monday afternoon there were not many people around so it was very safe. Big open spaces, lots of trees and green, a huge area.

Dry but great Bay views

By richard g |

Not much water. Gold and rather than green most of the time but great views of the bay, San Francisco and the bridges

Great hiking and walking spot

By Boris S |

Lots of trails and hikes in the middle of a beautiful landscape! Various places for pick nicks and outdoor activities. Well cared of and even approachable by public transport via bus 67 from downtown Berkeley. Of course lots of parking.

Getting tranquility at the Tilden Park

By Michael F |

Finishing off a business trip to Berkeley, friends at LBNL suggested a drive to the Tilden Park to me. The beautiful hilly terrain with the mild eucalyptus scent in the air and the stunning views was definitely worth the detour before I headed to the busy Oakland airport. Something I recommend for all visitors.

Family outing supreme

By SusanElSobrante |

From the Merry Go Round, train rides and driving to Inspiration Point this park has numerous venues. A great place for large groups (must reserve in advance). Need to wear out the kids...this is the place. Love to go during the holidays but be prepared to look for parking near the venue you want. During the rest of the year, there is plenty of parking. My kids love the train and insist on multiple rides. I personally love to go to Inspiration Point and look at the spectacular views. Beautiful sunrise if you want to get up early and BYO coffee. The Lawrence Hall of Science is near the park so make it part of your itinerary.

Great trails

By suzannahMT |

Love the trails up here, remember going here with my father as a child. Cool attractions like a carousel and miniature train station make this a great place for families to visit.

Great Afternoon Hike

By Nancy G |

Always enjoyable returning again and again to Tilden Park. So many wonderful trails.
Great place to have a summer BBQ.

Peaceful park in Urban oasis

By TaistealSona |

Such a beautiful place to get away to right in Berkeley's own backyard. I love the easy hike around Lake Anza and the many other gorgeous trails throughout the park. We came around a bend on a hike one time and were greeted by a huge herd of goats (hundreds!) grazing the grass as part of a fire prevention program. Very neat!

There is something for everyone at Tilden! Hikes, steam trains, swimming, a merry-go-round, a little farm, picnic areas, camping, benches in beautiful areas just to sit in peace, etc. Once, I even saw two people 'doing it' under a blanket on the lawn near the lake. Hey now! I guess they didn't realize that just because they couldn't see us that we could still see them. Don't worry, that was an anomaly. And it was actually rather amusing, especially when someone's Frisbee landed near them and they had to retrieve it. Good times.

Tilden really is beautiful gem of the East Bay.

I worked there as a naturalist.

By David Q |

I was a naturalist there many years ago while getting my Masters degree. I am now a retired professor of anatomy and physiology with degrees from University of Illinois and UCLA Medical School. We took school aged children on nature walks. It was wonderful. Great memories.

Walk along the crest of the hills

By northernneckinn |

Found our way up to Inspiration Point and took off along the Nimitz Way for a breathtaking view of Berkeley, the Bay, Golden Gate bridge and San Francisco in the clear afternoon air. The Nimitz Way is a tarred 8 ft wide path that is suitable for walking, cycling, jogging and horseback riding. Beautiful trees provide scents of pine and Eucalyptus. Grade on the trail is gentle and the walking exertion can be described as easy! A very pleasant way to spend an hour and get away from the world below !!

Spent my days here while in Berkeley

By ellen u |

Must go to inspiration point and hike/walk the paved trail. So peaceful, beautiful trees, stunning views, you will not be disappointed.

Wonderful park

By christopherpee |

I hike here 4-5 days a week. Great trails, scenery, and once you get away from the Little Farm no crowds. But if you have kids a visit to Little Farm is a must. Bring lettuce or celery to feed the animals. So very grateful for this large park and green space near our Berkeley home.

Botanic Garden

By paulsI1574HS |

While Tilden is a very large par, I mostly visit the Botanic Garden, which attempts to keep all the plants native to California. I birdwatch there...

A fun escape for the day with hiking, a children's farm and eco center

By Raven Sky |

Tilden Regional park offers a wide variety of things to do. From a vast choice of hiking trails, an Environmental center and the little farm for children it's a great local park. There's also a Botanical garden and a lake for swimming.

family outing

By sunjoe075 |

This is a great trip for family with little ones. we went there for the train ride. we ended up staying for almost the whole day. The train ride is very special. Train ride starts at 11:00 am. The cost is $3 pp which is very reasonable. The ride took almost 15 minutes around well maintained redwood forest. The train uses diesel engine. The operator is private who leased the land from the park. There is a model train enthusiast track next to the train ride which only open on Sundays. You may want to schedule your trip around that model track opening if you are into those kind of things.
After the train ride, we went to the zoo (make sure to bring celery and lettuce to feed the animals). Zoo has chickens, goats, cows, turkeys, ducks etc. we ended up having a picnic at one of the tables in the woods. There is a botanical garden in the regional park. Not sure how the garden is compare to the botanical garden at UC Berkeley. We do plan to come back for the trails and the botanical garden on our next trip.

A walk at inspiration point

By Andrew K |

Tilden I slush green, lots of people using it specially on weekends. Small train ride is terrific for kids. Walking on Inspiration point trail Is a delight. Markers tell you how far you have come. People are friendly. Can ride your by bicycle as long as you respect the walkers. Parking can be tough

Thank Environmentalists for this fabulous park!

By Aviano |

The best place to hike in the East Bay. Get a good trail map.
Warning...some of the trails become mud pits after rain.

Day at the park

By John C |

Little Train. Mary go round and Little Farm with the grandkids. Topped it off with a picnic lunch at the "Meadows picnic area"

Shall Return

By Melinda B |

Tilden Regional Park is a place to return to many times. We live close so it is easy for us to take the children there many times. Children can feed celery and lettuce to the goats, cows, and sheep. There are pigs, turkeys, rabbits, and chickens. The merry-go-round is a popular place and the concession stand is always busy. There are plenty of spaces for picnics. Our family rented a space for a birthday party. There are more activities, but these are the ones that we revisit often.

GREAT AREA FOR FAMILY TO ENJOY AN OUTING

By TheBel |

Recently went to Tilden Park to feed: goats, sheep, cows, chickens and ducks at the Little Farm. Then went to the Carousel for a picnic and ride on the afore mentioned. From there we went to the Steam Engine Ride which was so much fun. A long ride for $3 and well worth it. Food available to the Carousel. Finished the afternoon with an Ice Cream on College Ave. in Berkeley.

great for kids of all ages, free parking, free admission

By IMoveALot |

Went here with 2 small kids and 3 teens...and all had fun. Fed the animals in the nature park (bring celery and lettuce!), then we all rode the steam train (12 minute ride, $3 tickets).

Steam train ride

By PammyJane24 |

Lovely trip (twice) on the Steam Train suitable for all ages! Lovely countryside and flora. Our little grandson loved it but a bit too young to appreciate the mechanics of the little steam train

Beautiful views and beautiful environment

By Gerry K |

Many great hiking trails of all levels of difficulty. An easy one with beautiful views of the Golden Gate Bridge begins at Inspiration point. The Steam Train is a great attraction for kids and adults.

Beauty in the Berkeley Hills

By DoctorPaul |

A beautiful retreat from the hustle of the city. There are activities for everyone. We went with our children and grandchildren to ride the steam train and to visit the Little Farm. What a thrill for them and for us to witness their delight. There are picnic areas, walking paths hiking trails and the opportunity to relax in the countryside.

WOW...!

By Herschel J |

What a beautiful park. There is lots of room to roam and hike. There were bikes and hikers all over. The view was amazing. Nothing like it. Dress warm if its cool out and bring good hiking shoes.

Views were outstanding.

By Hilda O |

The ride uphill was OK. Parking was a little hard to find but the views going up were great. Having lunch in such a beautiful place was peaceful. Made me very lazy and not want to move. I didn't either!.

Really loved the nature walk, small farm, views over the Bay and helpful visitor center

By ZoeLarkin |

Title says it all really. this place has everything. The visitor center is a good place to start. despite the helpful member of staff, my husband and I still managed to get lost and ended up at Inspiration Point (where no buses run!) instead of out front by the visitors center where we got off the bus. Never mind - it was still a great 2 hours of hiking on a sunny day. We walked all the way to the stone circle at the top of wildcat peak - a steep uphill climb at times but so worth it for the views which are the best in the bay area. You can see so much, it's unreal. For a photography enthusiast like me it was a shame not being able to bring my equipment because it's such a steep, hard climb and having excess weight would make it unbearable, but I snapped a couple of shots with my smartphone. To anyone that really wants to get up there with a bag full of gear, go for it! It would be worthwhile, especially if later in the day (not in the midday sun!) and make for better pictures too.

also make sure you visit the farm where you can feed farm animals - very fun and the animals seem to love getting their celery and lettuce.

tilden

By babynurse55 |

Beautiful, quiet. Lots of small wild life roaming free. Trails that lead off the regular path. Great place to relax, have a picnic, read a book.

really a beautiful place for wedding venue

By Ruby A |

it was my first experience working for a wedding .I am scared of high altitude and it was a scary moment for me.GPS was not working so please make sure to check before going to any particular location in that part.Luckily forest rangers and employees are really helpful and they guide you if you can find them.

Miles and miles of open space. Great trails for dogs on leash. There are sparse drinking water fountains.

Nice walking roads and trails ...

By Bryan H |

Over the years, we've gone here many times, and we always go to a new section. This time we went on a Thursday a.m. hike which bicyclists use, too. We chose that one to avoid the mud on some of the other trails. As others report in their reviews, there's much to see and do here. And there's plenty to do for all different levels of fitness and mobility. If you're in the East Bay, check it out ...
I've only gone in a car, though.

A Favourite Nature Break

By Giulietta S |

I love Tilden park- it's wild with wonderful trees and paths, yet you can also come with friends and family and take shorter walks or hang out at a picnic bench.

Camping spots, picnic areas, great place for family fun or birthdays, reunions, class trips, troop events, etc.

Local treasure

By myworkshed |

There's so many hills and sales in Tilden Park. The Ridge Trails, The Bayview Trails The Valleys the forests all great and so close if you live in the area. But don't leave those valuables in view when you park your car. Crooks are everywhere!

Great park for hikes and views

By PLan977 |

We stopped here to do a hike and the park is really nice. There are some great views of the bay along with the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge. The trails are well marked. There were a lot of wild flowers blooming also.
We stopped at the botanical gardens and that was really beautiful.
Also had a picnic lunch at a roadside picnic table.
It's a great park to spend the day at.

A Little Bit of Everything

By Lenus1 |

Tilden Park gives you the sense of being far away from city and traffic, yet its only a few short minutes from downtown Berkeley. The park has a little bit of everything - swimming, picnic tables & grills, hiking trails, wildlife, a small animal farm, train rides, a carousel, golf course, and more. A beautiful park to spend an hour or a day.

Berkeley Hills - San Francisco Bay views

By HenryDurant |

Tilden Park in the Berkeley Hills is an amazing family destination. Excellent views of the entire San Francisco Bay across to the Golden Gate Bridge. Great hiking and biking options along Grizzly Peak above the University of California campus. Take the Steam Train through the trees of this incredible park and savor the natural beauty of the SF East Bay and the Oakland Hills and the views of the Berkely Alameda County shoreline. The Carousel offers family fun in the park and the Tilden Golf course is a perfect escape to the active vacationer in the San Francisco Bay

A Great Place to Hike, Bike, Have a Picnic

By L R |

Tilden Park in Berkeley offers many things for singles and families.
Hike. bike or have picnic in the many picnic spots.
Take a ride on the steam trains (two sizes) or how about a ride on the carousel.
There is also the little farm that has little animals.

Love the hike

By KitKitty123 |

Best hiking to get to by public transit in Berkeley! I was impressed with the hike and experience. very beautiful and easy to get around.

Great views and great flora!

By Miriam S |

Tilden Park is beautiful, and there are many great hikes in the park. Inspriation Point trail has an asphalt path and both bicycles and walkers can use it. The views are fantastic.

Great reserve area with a steam train ride for the kids.

By JY_Globetrotter |

We went on a hot day so we had to skip out on the hiking trails and the botanical gardens but the fun things for kids is the antique Merry Go Round built in 1911 that still runs today and the Redwood Valley Railway Steam Train.

Both activities were quite affordable and I remember the steam train ride was only $4.00 per person and it lasted for over 10 minutes around a section of the park.

Great Regional Park With Lots to Do

By yosemitepictures |

Lovely open spaces at the top of the Berkeley hills. The botanical gardens are well maintained and have great diversity.

Hiking trails and picnic areas abound. Lots of wooded areas, watch out for poison oak if you stray off of any of the trails or wander among the trees. There are bubbling creeks in the winter and spring.

The golf course is one of the better and more interesting public courses in Northern California.

On a clear day the views of the Bay Area from Grizzly Peak Rd are stunning!

Magical

By Laura N |

We go to Tilden regularly with my family for hiking, visiting Little Farm, riding on the Steam Trains, swimming in Lake Anza. It is a magical and beautiful park!

Amazing views, great trails!

By ArtsForHealth |

This is an Oakland treasure. This park offers so much including great views, great trails, Lake Anza, steam train rides, and more. Not to be missed if you're in the area.

Great hidden gem

By Mark b |

Went on a Sunday afternoon and was busy but still peaceful. Two playgrounds for kids plus a concrete slide. Basketball Court and ball field were is use. Hiking trails and some picnic tables were available. Near campus. No off street parking so plan on a walk to get there from a distant parking spot.

A local treasure

By teralinda |

This local park has everything: hiking, swimming and biking, as well as acres of parkland to play, picnic and enjoy. It is a family favorite and worth joining for the summer months.

nice chill day hike

By karenmo425 |

we hiked the Lake Anza trail , a little rugged in parts but fun & just enough to feel like we did something to get off our butts & earn all our yummy food in Berkeley
a little confusing at times , nice to have the AllTrails app map

Great for Young Familiies - Be sure to check out the carousel

By Meghan D |

I grew up in Orinda and spent lots of time at Tilden Park over the years. Now that I have a 4 year old daughter, I made sure that we visited Tilden during our recent trip to the Bay Area over the July 4th holiday. One of the highlights of Tilden for families with young children is the carousel. I was so pleased to see how well kept the carousel is after all these years. The carousel had a beautiful paint touchup back in Nov. 2015, so all of the horses and other animals were looking as gorgeous as ever. There is some great information on site about the history of the carousel. There is an area to buy snacks and drinks, and the employees on site were all very professional and kind. There are picnic tables and grass there, which makes it very easy to bring a picnic lunch. We can't wait to come back on our next visit to the Bay Area.

Lake Anza - Outstanding family destination - even with a dog

By Keith B |

Tilden is huge, so kind of hard to review the whole place. So instead, I'll review just Lake Anza. Say you have young kids and you want to let them go swim. Perfect for Lake Anza, where they have bathrooms, food, and a great beach. Maybe you just want to take your wife for a walk around the lake, but feel guilty so you bring the dog. Perfect for Lake Anza (no dog in the swimming area of course). This one spot is just terrific, and we've gone back multiple times for a simple and relaxing walk. Finally, our kids also are counselors for Monkey Business - that does a summer camp at Tilden - and they supervise kids swimming and playing in the lake.

Great regional park

By Janice M |

Hiking trails galore (watch out for poison oak)
Little Farm - great for kids with small nature center
large merry go round
lake Anza - swimming area cordoned off with life guards, sandy beach, family centered lots of little kids
Steam trains - wonderful open steam trains wind through the trees and back
picnic areas that can be reserved for small fee, used by many large families or others: work group, school group, kids' parties

Back to Nature

By Guaifun A |

Been hitting the trails here for the last 15+ years and it still amazes me how beautiful this place is and how much it's remained the same. I normally drive up Wildcat Canyon from the Orinda side (San Pablo Dam Rd.) and park at Inspiration Point. Then hit the Nimitz Way trailhead. On good days, I run the Nimitz and enjoy the ridge crest views where you can see the Golden Gate Bridge to the West and Mount Diablo to the East. I stay on this paved trail until it ends at the 4 mile point and then work my way down on Mezue Trail to the valley floor. From there, I run up to Peak Trail and back to the parking lot. To get the most out of nature to take in its wonder (and avoid crowds), start as early as 8am during Fall/Winter and 6am during Spring/Summer.

How lucky are we to call Tilden our back yard!

By TGnorcal |

Living in Berkeley for ten years now and all it takes is a hike on the ridge of the Quarry Trail in Tilden for me to exclaim over and over again - "We are so lucky to live here!" Walking the ridge line with two different ecosystems on either side is both beautiful and fascinating. The fog and bay and city skyline to the west and the golden dry hills and reservoir in Orinda to the east. It is one of our favorite social activities to meet a friend for one of our favorite loops. Tilden is a wealth of options - Little Farm for the little ones, hiking, campsites, the Botanic Garden, Lake Anza, the carousel at the holidays....thank you Bay Area for keeping this amazing resources funded. How lucky are we that this is ten minutes from home???

Wonderful diverse park to hike!

By CaribBeachLady |

Check out all the various trails and activities available in this beautiful park! From incredible Bay views to hanging out by the Lake Anza to a ride on the carousel.

LOADS OF FUN AND ACTIVITIES

By Gilberto K |

This was my first time at Tilden park. We visited the Lake and several other attractions. there are amazing views.

Great for kids or adults!

By mattkurth |

They have a super cool nature center and miles of biking and hiking trails so close to the city. Great place to picnic.

Great hiking with 360 views

By Maeve R |

I'm a big fan of hiking.
Tilden Regional/ Nature park is great for all ages. The little farm has animals for kids, there is an easy 1 mile walk around Jewel lake that has turtles and ducks. For the more adventurous, head up Laurel Canyon or Big Pines to Nimitz and then take the Wildcat Peak trail to the top for panoramic 360 views of the Bay Area. Mount Diablo in the East, below is the San Pablo Reservoir and San Pablo Bay up to Petaluma on a clear day, San Francisco and both the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge. About 5 miles round trip.
Get out and see the Bay Area.

too many bikes

By Maggie J |

People hiking have to share now with mountain bike people and bikes are coming around corners of trail way too fast.

Rewarding 8 mile walk

By CTPreview |

Walked throughout the Berkeley hills, but mostly in Tilden Park last weekend. Not busy in the park, plenty to see and a great opportunity to trek thru nature on our doorstep.

Lake Anza inside Tilden Park

By faithngrace |

What a beautiful gem we have in the Bay Area. It's a place that my spouse went as a child and I feel like he held out on me while our kids were younger. I went with my 10 year old and spouse and we spent the whole day at Lake Anza. We got there around 12:45pm (later than I wanted) and we had to park in the 2nd lot. It's not that far from the lake but there is parking closer to the lake. You pay $3.00 (yes that is the actual price) to get in and they have bathrooms, a snack bar, beach, and grace. You can bring food and drinks in (they don't check your bags) although they will tell you alcohol isn't allowed it yo are drinking it directly from the source (beer bottle or can).

There is some shade (not alot) so I suggest you bring an umbrella and lots of sunscreen. The lake is roped off; for smaller kids they do have lifeguards but they require you to be with your child if they are 12 and under. If you can swim well they will let you go past the ropes. You have to take a test for that. I really enjoyed the sound of happiness coming from the kids and adults and it was a really relaxing afternoon.

I can't speak to the rest of the park but I will explore it more soon; there is a train and feeding farm. Hope to do a hike near Lake Anza and jump in (not where the lifeguards are). Don't miss out on this gem, it's beautiful.

Great place for anyone, especially kids

By firstandrew |

Great kid activities like the Carousel, Steam Trains, the petting zoo, pony rides, and lots of picnic areas. Trails galore and a lot of semi-private picnic areas. Beaches and swimming, too!

Going to return.....

By WillGray77 |

We checked out the farm and had a blast...

Best part was that it was free... Ohh and we got free parking really close to the park...

They have plenty of things for kids to do... Check out the animals, take a walk, go to the play ground...

Lots of people on a Saturday to see the cows and chickens...

You can bring food and have a picnic...

Good place for children and urban outing

By Paul S |

It is not a place for special trip if you are visiting from out of town though this a good place for relaxed outings on the weekends for local Bay Area families. You need your own transportation to go to different attractions for children. Preschoolers and elementary school kids love Petting Zoo, Steam Train, Merry-go-round, and Lake Anza. Take some celery or lettuce if you want to feed the cows in Petting Zoo. Please always check whether different attractions are open on your planned day to visit the park. Take your own food and water if you want to enjoy a picnic.

Adults may enjoy a walk at the inspiration point though it is often difficult to find parking on the sunny weekends. We have always enjoyed Tilden Park as adults, particularly when we are accompanied by children.

What a Must Do in the East Bay

By jeremy s |

Easy to access from Berkeley and with well sign-posted paths to Lake Anza. The walk around the Lake is a fun scramble but work the effort.

Awesome View of the SF Bay

By Jay K |

You must visit the Tilden Regional Park, the driving course will allow you access to a very beautiful view of the SF Bay.
The park itself is beautiful for BBQ.

I'd recommend to visit the Tilden Park Steam Trains if you have kids. Cute little steam train rides lasting ~10 mins for $3.

Also check out the little animal farm while you are there!

What a FIND!

By JeannineVee |

A gem of a park right in my very own backyard. Just the place to get lost in and love every minute of it

Great place for hiking

By Cosmosticon |

I love Tilden Park. It's pretty close to civilization but feels miles away. There are trails and hikes for all abilities and you can even push a stroller on some of them. You do need to take water and if it's been raining, shoes that can withstand some standing water. Some of the hikes are pretty strenuous but you're rewarded with grand views once you ascend the heights.

Outdoor Wonderland

By AJohnPearson1962 |

SO you need to get outside and your stuck in Berkley or the near east bay? Go directly to Tilden, it's a world apart for your outside fix.

My Home Away from Home

By arsinoe27 |

Hiking in Tilden is awesome! I've enjoy the many trails for years. I'm no longer in the area but I visit there every chance I get.

Beautiful park to enjoy with friends and family

By regent7 |

Driving around and heading into the Tilden Regional Park(TRP) was really cool. Great views and lots of trails to hike on. Bring a picnic lunch and just enjoy being outdoors. There is a neat little golf course tucked in up here that I'm sure is a blast to play. When the fog rolls in it offers some spectacular photo opportunities. Check out some of the houses that call this area home.

Beautiful park

By operalover939 |

We entered off Grizzly Peak Boulevard and drove to Inspiration Point, which offers spectacular views. We did not have time for the Botanical Garden, alas.

great Park beautiful flowers in summer

By 13out |

Tilden Park is near the top of a hill and has acres of gardens to explore. It is the gardens of a house used by a former head of the university of California. The views of San Francisco are fabulous and the classical garden meets woodland and free flowing gardens is interesting. Great spot for a summer picnic. This is definately better in summer.

Wonderful hikes!

By Michael N |

What a great place to experience Bay Area natural beauty. Many miles of hiking with incredible views of SF, bridges, bay, etc. A swimmable lake, lots for kids to do also.

Always plenty to see!

By Peggy W |

Tilden has activities for the entire family. You might start at the Little Farm to visit a variety of farm animals. You can then take a ride on the Steam Train which goes through the trees along a ridge. Fabulous view of the Bay! There seem to be more cars parked on both sides of the road than in the past. If you cycle up there, be aware that there is not much of a shoulder. Likewise, be alert for cyclists flying down the hill! Beautiful places to get a panoramic view of the Bay Area.

Hit the Lake This Summer!

By Kate |

We happened upon the park during recent visit and found the lake—what a lucky find. Pretty clean. Families. Life guards. A great spot for some summer fun!

Beautiful park in Berkeley area

By Earl S |

The place has a lot of picnic spots and trails. We enjoyed walking around the park. Lake Anza is a good place to visit. Swimming is allowed in lake. Just expect lots of people on weekends and holidays.

Take a ride on the train!

By Avid_Traveler73 |

We always enjoy Tilden Park and taking our grandson on the steam train. Sad to see everything so dry due to the drought.

Best close-to-city trails and views ever

By Joann C |

go early, get parking and avoid crowds. There are all sorts of trails that intersect Nimitz (which is paved). Try one of these.
If you go out 4 miles along the paved section, you are rewarded with a dirt trail and lots more ....

Beautiful

By Rosie C |

Inspiration point is a nice place for an easy walk as well as is wheelchair and stroller friendly. Dogs on leash are good and people are good that way- meaning they are respectful dog owners who pick up after the dogs as keep them on leash typically.

This area is one of the best parts of the world! I go all the time as I live near by- so at least once a month. You can go for short or long. you can ride bikes etc.

A park for all sorts

By D T |

Very pleasant park areas with plenty to do and good walks for both families and other groups - large and small. The warning of how to deal with mountain lion encounters adds a certain frisson

Friendly farm animals

By 234lax |

My husband and I took our 20 month old granddaughter to the Children's farm. She loved the animals and could run from one area to the other. There were many parents, grandparents and children there, but lots of space. Also, there is a
small playground best the parking lot. I highly recommend this.

Great, Huge with so many things to do.

By steve b |

Lots of great trails. The Little Farm. Steam train. Carousel. Swim. Tons of places to picnic. This is a huge, fantastic park.

Farm area for kids

By Kate B |

Took our grandkids here. Fed lettuce and celery (all that is allowed) to chickens, cows, sheep and goats. Lots of parents with young children and plenty of us grandparents with their grands. A good time was had by all. Play area near parking area, and visitor center. The drive through the park has beautiful views to the west over the bay.

These Hills Were Made For Walking

By advisorhee |

Tilden Regional Park is a wonderful outdoor experience for every age, including an 18-hole golf course, plenty of hiking trails, a carousel, nature center, and farm animals to feed and pet. The views of the Bay are stunning, but the roads are winding and narrow, and you have to share them with cyclists. Take a picnic and a camera and enjoy!

A Wonderful Local Gem

By albsada |

Tilden Regional Park is not the most beautiful open space in the Bay Area, but it does have some amazing views across the bay and towards San Francisco. It's also a wonderful escape from the hubbub although it can also get pretty busy on a sunny weekend! A wonderful place to relax and wind down in nature.

view's are once in a life time

What a green gem in Berkeley! You can take a long or short hike. Catch an outdoor Shakespearean performance during the summer months. Have a picnic in the park. For a fun time check out this extensive urban park that makes you feel that you're miles away from the hustle and bustle of the nearby university or city..

Circumnavigate Lake Anza

By northernneckinn |

What appears on the maps a straight forward trail around Lake Anza turns into a bit of a scramble! You should wear sturdy shoes and be prepared to negotiate water bog sections, rocky ledges, climbing around trees and finding footholds in the rocky outcrops. Towards the NE end of the lake the path becomes in distinct and it is easy to miss the bridge especially if you circumnavigate clockwise. Don't do this on a wet or very windy day! Only the ducks will enjoy watching your discomfort ! Takes about 45 minutes of easing hiking with s few minutes here and there to enjoy the view!

Nice hiking trails

By MessyBun2020 |

I recently moved to the area and I'm so glad I found this place. The trails are really nice and well marked. They have maps posted up in different areas so I wasn't worried about getting lost. It's a beautiful place to hike and I've been here 3 times and have discovered more trails and enjoy it every time. Great place!

Peaceful exercise spot near city

By Brenda S |

Nice hikes and mountain biking (if you can manage the ride up the hill to reach it!) close to city and a peaceful spot to wander and exercise.

Great place to hike in Berkeley

By F F |

This is a great place to go hiking in Berkeley. I has a wide variety of hiking options from smooth wheel chair accessible and car free paths at Inspiration Point to more challenging and less crowded options. There are wonderful views of the Bay and Contra Cost County. There is a Little Farm and merry go round for kids. I go there regularly to hike.

Beautiful park with wonderful options for families

By 237lmk |

Be sure to check out the steam train and carousel if you have young kids (or young at heart :)! Lots of amazing vistas throughout so take time to explore.

Lots to do and see

By Susan F |

Beautiful preserved area with lots to do. We had a little trouble navigating the area. Wish we had gotten more park info ahead of time. There are a lot of things to do. But some were not open when we were there. Swimming area was lots of fun. Next time we will plan to spend more time there.

A Huge and Amazing Park

By Peter C |

This is a huge and amazing park. It is a wilderness park, but next to fancy houses on the periphery. As an easterner, it seems almost incongruous for there to be a genuine wilderness area in the middle of a string of suburbs--but here it is. It is really quite a treasure, certainly worth an afternoon or a day for a visitor, and a great resource if you live in the area.

A local hike

By Jannik J |

This park is very close to Berkeley and during weekends can be very crowded. But that aside try the trail from Inspiration point or visit the little Farm and the trail that goes around Jewell Lake.

Great place to take a 6 year old grandson!

By Greg M |

While it was somewhat cool, the weather didn’t bother our grandson who had a great time riding in the uncovered passenger cars of the two different railroad rides provided by miniature steam engines that are sturdy enough to carry the adults as well.
We also enjoyed the carousel ride followed by the hot chocolate and popcorn at the cafe next door.
If you plan to ride the carousel, ensure the ride you choose goes up & down during the ride as some of the rides are not attached to a piston.
There is also a store next to the railway rides where an assortment of railroad artifacts can be purchased.

Very scenic and filled with weirdos

By Douglas D |

The park itself is very beautiful and the roads through it are twisty and fun to drive, but because of it's proximity to Berkeley, it's filled with weirdos.

Beautiful nature just at the edge of a huge metropolis

By Flyboy22 |

Great vistas, trails, roads and open areas that can be enjoyed, driving, walking, riding bikes, running, golfing, etc. So close to the city and gives so much access and viewing of nature. Lovely place to ride bikes especially on week days when the auto traffic is lower. Close to the Bay/Berkeley and East Bay cities. Well worth the trip.

Wonderful Park Near the City

If you like the outdoors and nature you'll love Tilden. So close to Berkeley and accessible by bus from the BART station or easy to drive and park if you've a car. Get maps and guides free from the 'Visit Berkeley' tourist information centre on Addison Street to make sure you don't miss out on all the park has to offer. 'Visit Berkeley' staff are brilliantly helpful and will give you all the advice and information you could possibly need. Plenty to see, do and enjoy in Tilden whatever the weather and whatever time of year. Have fun!

Berkeley Hills are calling!

By meandbobby |

Such a relaxing afternoon spent at this beautiful part! My niece is a naturalist there and parts were closed but she did explain the renovations that are expected; we were able to see ALL of the Animal Farm, including Dutchess, the largest pig I have ever seen! Such a gorgeous day and a wonderful place to take the family. There are so many areas, apparently, like Lake Anza, that we didn't get to, THIS time! I was visiting for just 4 days from Minnesota!

Very nice

By lovetripsdd |

Very nice views from the top of the hill and an enjoyable drive going up to and down from there. The views are simply magnificent. The drive involved a lot of curvy roads though so be careful. Bring a snack and have a picnic in the park.

Always a good respite

By SlowCurrents |

Many different places to walk or hike, with different level of challenge. Many superb views. Good air.

My favorite!

By Cookie S |

We walk here daily, and I have heard coyotes, seen foxes, deer, golden eagles, fence lizards, owls and many other critters. The off leash parts for my dog are wonderful. Faves are the quarry trail and Seaview.

Tilden Park--Paradise in Our Own Backyard!

By JanElise2012 |

I came to Berkeley for grad school in 1968 and became friendly with a group of folks also studying at Cal. Therefore, I learned quickly about the recreational activities here that were meant for low income folks--like students. Tilden has everything--boundless hiking trails, bicycling trails, picnic tables in small areas with barbecues that we can reserve for special occasions--with parking lots nearby and lovely Lake Anza. For kids there are pony rides, a small steam train ride, a Little Farm with animals they can feed and pet, and a nature center where they/we can learn about the flora and fauna that surround us. There are also extraordinary places for adults: a golf course, the Brazil Room for weddings and bar mitzvahs, etc, and beautiful botanical gardens. One can get there by car, bicycle, or local bus. (AC Transit) Fifty years later I still live in Berkeley and still love Tilden Park. You will, too!

Best Park for Youngsters

By Jan S |

Tilden has many parts that are exciting to preschoolers. There is the Little Farm and the Merry-go-Round. It’s possible to reserve tables and rides on the Merry-go-Round. It’s a wonderful venue for young people to sit for lunch and also move around to go on rides. There is also the Tilden Park trains that are very exciting.

Tilden Miniature Train Ride

My grandkids live in Oakland, California and on a recent visit, my son took us to Tilden Park, located just above the Oakland/Berkeley area. It was a short (but windy) drive up the hills to Tilden Park. The complex is vast and there are many areas to explore. For those enthusiasts, there are many hiking trails throughout the park. The first stop from the South entrance was the miniature train ride, which my 3 year old grandson loves (not to mention his grandparents). It opens at 11a and I would recommend getting there just before then because close parking is limited and the lines get long. The fare is currently $3 per person per ride but they sell a "5 pack" for $12 and they do not expire. The steam train ride is wonderful and long, much longer than any ones in Southern California. It travels though trees, you get a wonderful view of San Francisco and some of the train hobbyist "work" areas and the "round house". Any age can ride and enjoy a great family trip. After the train ride, visit the Little Farm or Carousel to enjoy the rest of the park and Botanical Gardens.

Great for families and friends

By jama80 |

Started going to Tilden in the late 60's. Taken my children there and all of our family frequents this place. Carousel is a piece of history and vintage! Petting zoo slot of fun and just a great place to have a family outing, barbecue, play frisbee, or just lay out in the sun.

Good place for a hike

By Pittsburgh_cyclist |

I went for an evening stroll along the Grizxly Mountain Trail. A nice walk on a good path. Biggest surprise was how much climbing I had to do by car to get to the park entrance.

Golden Gate Live Steamers

By CPR-D10g |

The Golden Gate Live Steamers offer rides to the public on their miniature railway (1/8 of full size) on most Sundays between 12 noon and 3pm. Great for the kids, and the big kids. Many people have never seen an operating steam locomotive, and the meticulous built and well maintained locomotives and riding cars are a joy to see and ride.

Hike

By rewthie |

There are many wonderful hikes in Tilden Park as well as the Little Farm that is a favorite for families with young children. The steam train is also super for children around three and up. Trail maps are generally available at trailheads.

Nice park for a picnic

It is a great park to have a nice picnic by the water. It was great. It was clean and beautiful. Yay

Great trails for running and off leash dog walking

By Chris H |

Enjoy this area so much with all the green space so close to town. The off leash dog areas are great and people need to remember this treasure and pick up after their canines. Few cities offer this kind of freedom for you and
your "best friend".

What a great resource!

By Caroltrina |

I have barely begun to explore this treasure, but I have been to Lake De Anza (or just Anza, I can't remember) a couple of times - a very nice water-side hike, though not for the physically challenged. And I really enjoyed the botanical garden, with sections based on the climate regions of CA. The drive there is lovely, too. A friend tells me the carousel was nice to take her grandson to.

Gorgeous place with great staff!

By arhie |

The team at the Nature Center (north end of the road, by the farm) was incredibly helpful and friendly. This stunning park is family friendly and features trails (obvi), a carousel, a golf course, a botanical garden highlighting California biomes, and a lake. I will definitely be back!

Tilden Park

By trfairchi |

Tilden Park is a jewel for the East Bay and beyond. Beautiful hiking trails, lots of wildlife. We brought our three boys there weekly when they were very young and they loved it! They still do and they are teenagers. There's a Little Farm with animals you can feed, I'm a local teacher and I've brought all elementary grades I've taught here. Lake Anza rocks! It's a beautiful swimming lake nestled into a pristine canyon surrounded by trees and different rock formations. I've been to Anza a zillion times. A great sand beach, perfect swimming conditions. Grew up here, and even was married at nearby Brazilian Room, another Tilden prize.

great regional park in the Berkeley hills

By ipeguy |

we spent time hiking around a small lake and visiting the little farm with cows, sheep, goats, and other animals

Tilden Park

By margaretpat |

great place for you g and old. Lovely little train that does rides round the park for a few dolars. Gets very hot here in the summer as you are in the hills

Beware of thieves

By Alco251 |

We made a Saturday trek to Tilden Park with grandkids in tow and had a wonderful ride on the Redwood Valley steam train. Came back to the parking lot to find our car burglarized. A park district cop took the report and told me that thieves from Berkeley, usually members of street gangs, roam the hills of Tilden Park and find great targets of opportunity among the parking lots. They sure found us. Beware. Don’t leave anything in your locked car in Tilden Park. Better yet, stay away...

Sprawling and amazing

By mikefromwellington |

This place was A LOT bigger than I expected. The trails and views were outstanding. The twisty rods were cool as well.

Relaxing Outdoors

By Kellie S |

So much to choose from here...hiking by Jewel Lake, sunbathing and swimming at Lake Anza, walking to Inspiration Point to,see views of the SF Bay, ambling through a botanical garden, taking the kids to the Little farm and feeding carrots & celery to the goats, and even riding the carousel or steam trains. You can spend a lovely afternoon here with your family and friends. Bring a picnic!

A worthwhile adventure!

By Maureen S |

Beautiful park with lots to do: hiking, Little Farm, Merry-go-round, steam train, picnic and swim at Lake Anza. If you go to Little Farm you can feed the cows, sheep & goat but remember to pick up some celery and lettuce (only permitted feed) at the store before you go b/c you can't buy any there.

Great family activities

By Siouxees |

Tilden has three attractions that are wonderful for families, the little farm, the little train and the carousel. Children can feed the animals with produce they bring, but some items are not allowed, so check ahead.

Gorgeous View, Easy Walk

By Keri T |

Living in the gorgeous Smoky Mountains beautiful views are something I am accustomed to and when I travel it is hard to find a view that competes, but Tilden Regional Park exceeded my expectations. It was an easy walk. It was clean, and the other people we encountered were nice. I definitely recommend going!

The best backyard in the universe

By mook51 |

Take a time out and hike around Tilden Park. Last week returned to Seaview trail. The winter rain has painted a beautiful landscape.

Perfect for tiny tots

By Cornelia S |

The park stretches over a large area and it is quite far between the different activities so we were quite pleased that we came by car. There are not many places to buy food, but there are several picnic areas. First we stopped at the Small Farm. Here the kids can come close to different animals, such as cows and sheep, and feed them lettuce and celery. You have to bring these vegetables yourselves. On the way to the Redwood Valley Railway Station, where we went on the miniature steam train, we stopped to ride the carousel and to eat some burgers. The food was pretty ok and our daughter (5 yrs) loved the carousel ride. But the highlight was the steam train, also enjoyed by our 12 yrs old son and ourselves. Last we stopped at the lake Anza, but the lake did not impress us much even though the surroundings were quite nice, and as the weather was quite cold we only stopped shortly to eat an ice cream. The park is well worth a visit, and if you are coming with older children or on your own there are many nice trails to explore, by foot or bike.

Tilden - one of the best parts of Berkeley

By Tandy W |

Tilden is home to many wonderful hikes. I particularly love the multiple hikes that begin at the Little Farm and then wind their ways up to Wildcat Peak, then possibly to the Nimitz, and then back down. They are all lovely, some of them more narrow than others, none of them difficult, but all involve some effort (elevation increase of a few hundred feet). Beautiful views from the top! And if the only thing you want is views and you don't mind paved roads, then just go to Inspiration Point, take the Nimitz, and then at some point break off to the left to get to Wildcat Peak (and the Berkeley Peace Grove). That's just about an hour each way. Enjoy!

Pretty hikes and cool steam train!

By radgirl3 |

Easy access with a car. Varied hikes in redwoods or with stunning views of SF Bay and the Golden Gate. Dog friendly! Best thing is to ride the steam train with your dog.
Or your kids.

Nice getaway

By Sharon B |

Nice place to getaway from the hustle and bustle of the bay area cities. Make sure to take the steam train

Enjoyable Afternoon Exploring Tilden Regional Park, Berkeley, Ca

By mini |

After the Cal Football Game, we went and enjoyed Tilden Regional Park. It was a damp foggy day out but we still had fun. We enjoyed a walk by the lake, although the water is currently poluted with warnin signs out.

We went to the carousel and enjoyed seeing the Halloween Decorations.

We went to the railroad section of Tilden Park.

We had a very good time exploring the park.

Great place to enjoy the outdoors. Beautiful area to explore and have a picnic. Have visited several times a year. And they have a carousal for the kids.

Always bring my family here when they visit

By wanderlust3142015 |

Tilden Park is a great place to go in Berkeley. During the few hot days in the summer, they have a lovely lake for swimming. There are also many hiking trails. I always take our visitors to the Botanical Garden (this one is free, not like the UC Berkeley one), and if you continue to drive up Grizzly Peak Blvd there is a wonderful lookout where you can see all of Berkeley and across the bay.

Lots to do with tots

By EugeniaPerricone |

The train ride is fun! The Little Farm is fun! Bring a picnic and hike around. Regional botanical garden of all CA natives is very cool. Golf lessons available at the course.

Still an Extraordinary Place to Chill and Play

By DundeeVino |

I’ve been coming to the park for 60 years. I am amazed and impressed with how well it is maintained and the huge range of recreation options you have. And you have marvelous views of the Bay from so many places. Marvelous resource.

Good for all

By Anna H |

Whether you are looking for a nature hike, kids activities or just a place to chill- it has it all.
There are various trails, some easy and stroller friendly, some more adventurous. There's the steam train, the little farm and the merry go round for the young and the young of heart. The botanical gardens are lovely... You can celebrate birthday parties for kids or adults and even camp in the camp site.
So glad I live close to this pearl of a place

Go here for top of the mountain experience views exercise and clean air. Beaches and seafood need not be all you experience in San Franciso

Great regional park for getting away

By fabian_zurich |

When you live in the neighborhood, the Tilden Park is a great place to get away. However, I wouldn’t travel too far to come to this place. I especially like the Lake Anza, the merry-go-round and the many beautiful hikes. It can get very crowded on summer weekends, but it is always possible to find a quiet spot.

Beautiful!

By GOSIA P |

There is a micro climate there. So much to see! There is a rose garden, a steam train, many hiking trails, a lake, animal farm, even the ride is amazing with it's spectacular views.

Nice park

By momdzall |

Parking can be limited. Nice visitors center with lots of information and restrooms. Hiking trails were nicely maintained. Very pretty scenery.

Never tire of going here

By Judith D |

For me, the closest trails in Tilden are just miles away. With such a diversity of choices, you can walk along a stream or hike along a ridge with a view of San Francisco Bay. On my most recent visit with friends, we walked the ridge from the Inspiration Point parking lot along Nimitz Way. We are birders, and fall is a terrific time to bird along the trail. But every season is good, with the same wonderful view year-round. On the same day, we went to the Nature Center near the Little Farm. The trail from there, another favorite, goes a long way north to Wildcat Canyon. You can even take a feeder trail from here up to the Nimitz if you want a nice workout.

Terrific park.

By rmabrams |

Altho situated on the eastern periphery of East Bay cities (e.g., Berkeley, El Cerrito, Oakland, etc.), its proximity rates it as an urban park (formally, Regional Park) Wonderful environment, including one of the world's best carousels (summer), swimming lake, horse riding, miniature steam railroads, small but great animal farm, numerous picnic areas/tables and grills, and innumerable hiking paths; many scenic views; all wonderfully separated so that there is something resembling "wilderness" between each of the features.

Train, carousel, animal farm, hiking!

By Janice H |

So much to do with our grandchildren. Everyone loves the scale model train that winds through the redwoods and the carousel with its old animals carefully restored. The hill hikes provide great bay views. This is our playground for biking and hiking.. and the occasional picnic!

Great Variety for all Ages

By Pfitzgerald1946 |

Tilden Park offers summer swimming at Lake Anna. Nearby is a beautiful merry go round. It has a farm and petting zoo for children. Tilden also has a kiddie train, very popular with families of young ones. Roads through the park are filled with cyclists. Hiking and trail running is at its best at Tilden. A fairly flat out and back trail with every 1/4 mile mark displayed is great for pacing while many of the other trails have tough hills. One can usually make a loop with these trails. Getting married? Rent the Brazilian Room, an elegant large space in the heart of the park.

Hike, run, swim, bike, relax

By John L |

Even though it's only 15 minutes from my place in Berkeley, Tilden feels like it's 100 miles away. This beautiful park is full of trails that wind through canyons, climb ridges, and lead you to astounding views of the entire bay area. Go to Lake Anza and jump off the rock when the lifeguard is off duty :) There are lots of things to do for families, adults, children, outdoors enthusiasts, and anyone looking to get out of city for a while.

Beautiful Place

By Mrs B |

We really enjoyed our visit however wish it had been a little warmer so we could have stayed longer. Loved the carousel but you really need a car to get from the farm to carousel with small children.

Steam Train & Merry-Go-Round Summer Fun...

By Cathy20152015 |

Living in the East Bay the Steam Train and Merry-Go-Round at Tilden Park are both favorites for young grand kids. They love it. Train enthusiasts host the train rides on a miniature steam train. Open and closed cars. The kids like to sit right behind the steam engine for the full effect and usually ride 2 or 3 times (purchase ride tickets there).

Having grown up in San Francisco the Merry-Go-Round at the park is a nostalgic favorite. A real treasure. Outside picnic seating, small snack bar and friendly, helpful staff. Purchase tickets at snack bar and enjoy.

Beautiful wooded park for hiking close to Silicon Valley

By Qualitypro3336 |

We visited Tilden park this morning with my family and friends. This was my first trip here and I was quite amazed to see such a large park literally in our backyard! We hiked a little over 2 miles on the Nimitz trail and got great views of the bay, the Golden Gate Bridge and the city of San Francisco. It was a lovely day with blue skies and not a speck but of a cloud. There is no entrance fee to the park and parking is available at various points along the way. The park is quite heavily wooded with old trees and vegetation. We also saw a couple of redwood tree groves. There are both easy and hard trails to suit everyone. Harder trails go off into the woods and have much steeper gradients.

Overall a great place to spend the day outdoors.

Gorgeous place for a walk

Wonderful views, great smells, good place to walk any time of the year, variety of trails - sun/shade, flat/steep - you choose

Tilden Regional Park

By Emma Y |

Tilden Regional Park, also known as Tilden Park or Tilden, is a 2,079-acre regional park in the East Bay, part of the San Francisco Bay Area in California. It is between the Berkeley Hills and San Pablo Ridge. Its main entrance is near Kensington, Berkeley, and Richmond. Nearby Ocha Tea Cafe & Restaurant is my recommendation for food.

Great place to hike, using reasonable caution

By jmg893 |

My family and friends and I always have a great time on hikes or long walks here in Tilden Park. We've even done a few bicycle rides here too. If the weather is nice enough for a dry hike, it's nice enough for some great views of the general Bay Area. Most of the paths are reasonable navigable by someone in reasonable health. There are loop options, or just go as far as you want and then turn back. Whatever you want to do, you'll enjoy the view and your company (hopefully) in Tilden Park.

Been hiking there my whole life

By Lorisong |

A must do at least once a month if you live in the Bay Area. Lots of hiking and trails of varying degree of skill needed. Picnics, bike rides. Great for families and its wheel chair accessible in some areas.

A Gem!

By Sharon L |

I'm so glad that I decided to see this park while visiting Berkeley. The drive up was interesting and worth l the winding roads up. We even found a Fairy Post Office on one of the trails. Very nice park.

Tilden Regional Park: a vast treasure

By PeterHanff |

Just east of the Grizzly Peak ridge in Berkeley, California, lies a vast parkland of more than 2,000 acres. Mountainous vistas in virtually every direction from within the park provide glorious views of undeveloped land. There are many hiking trails, opportunities for horseback outings, picnic spots, Lake Anza (a recreational swimming lake, as well as a quiet, forested desitnation surrounded by its own trail), a botanical garden, an antique carousel, and a remarkable collection of miniature steam trains (some of which are large enough to carry passengers).

A great hiking spot/ lots of poison oak

By Maeve R |

A great park with many things: from the botanical gardens, mini train, Lake Anza, and the Little Farm, but I go for hiking. A good variety of trails, from lush foliage to sunny slopes and eucalyptus lines fire roads to Wildcat Peak with 360 degrees views of the Bay Area. It’s a good park. Like most hiking trails all over the Bay Area you should always watch for poison oak. I always suggest if you are heading out to hike, bring water, wear long pants and bring a jacket for the evenings. When the fog rolls in it can get very cold and windy fast! Enjoy the space and get some quiet time away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Trails range from easy to moderately strenuous. Enjoy and get out!

A day in the park with _______

By Paul C |

Part of a large regional park system in the hills above Berkeley and Oakland. Some nice trails to hike, Abounds with wild turkeys, deer and coyotes.

So beautiful and fun!

By Loretta L |

Tilden park is great with little kids! The Steam Train rides are free and the wait is bearable. The setting is gorgeous and the view of the bay, as you come up from Berkeley is awe-inspiring! The Carousel is old, makes you feel like you're in Mary Poppins. The botanical gardens has many different walks with species from all over California...at least! Spend the day here, bring a picnic, or just bring the little ones for a couple of hours of train rides and outdoor running and play. It is so close to the city but a world away!

Glorious Berkeley getaway from the City!

By Filiz510 |

Whether you go out to Inspiration Point for the fantastic views to the East including Mt. Diablo, picnic in one of the many sites scattered through the park, hike some of the hill ridge trails with views from the Sierra to the Farallon Islands on good days, swim in Lake Anza, take children to the Little Farm - or to the Merry-go-round or steam railroad on weekends, attend an event in the Brazilian tea room, or play golf on the course there, this is a priceless gem of a park that Berkeley residents (and visitors!) are constantly grateful for!

Love Tilden (and Wildcat Canyon)

By donlbe |

Incredible park. Coupled with Wildcat Canyon, there are miles and miles and miles of hiking and biking trails with plenty of wildlife as well (coyotes, birds of prey, river otters, etc.). You really feel like you get away even though you're 5 minutes from Berkeley and/or El Cerrito. It's our go to. By the way, there are amazing little kids things to do as well - the little farm, merrygoround, and miniature train rides.

Little Farm and the Nature Centerin Tilden Park

By tgiles25 |

A place that offers a place where all ages can enjoy the wonders of escaping urban life. You and your family will find a working farm with cows, pigs, chickens and goats but don't forget to bring celery or carrots to feed the animals. The nature center sharing the site is a fabulous place to learn the history of the Berkeley hills and its settlers. This area offers hiking trails for all ages. Down the road is a merry go round and the Lake Anza Swimming and picnic area. Enjoy!

My favorite park!

By Susan R |

Tilden Park is so wild and beautiful and so close to urban life as well. It feels like you're a million miles away from the city when walking along the trails here. I like that there's a great balance of wooded trails as well as open, sunny trails to choose from.

This park is wonderful!

By lindycalifornia |

We are so lucky to have Tilden park so close to home. When our daughter was young we went there every Sunday . At that time there was a pony ride/ horse ride. The Little Farm is wonderful! I think you can just bring lettuce to feed some animals. There is an educational center with exhibits for young children as well as older ones. The Merry go Round is fantastic and now even our grandson loves to ride the animals that go up and down. Then there is the train ride! Generations of kids have been enjoying these and other things . Go even if you don't have kids!

Crown Jewel

By Kermit P |

Berkeley's crown jewel, Tilden has something for just about everyone. Green spaces, camping, cookouts, swimming, hiking and so on. Add to that the farm, steam trains, and carousel and you have an amazing park.

Vistas worth walking for

This is a wonderful walking trail with views of Berkeley and the bay. The rolling hills offer gorgeous views around every bend. The trail is popular with friendly hikers and cyclists.

Steam Train in A Beautiful Park

By jaseaton |

Went to ride the steam train at Tilden Regional with my two year-old grandson who LOVES trains. He was enthralled, and because of that, I had a great time too. The trains are scaled down models of actual steam trains, and everything about the tracks, maintenance and fuel is authentic and real. The ride itself costs about $5 and lasts for about 15 minutes. It's JUST enough excitement mixed with anxiety to keep a two year-old utterly engaged. A perfect expedition. The rest of the park looks as described in others' reviews. It's a beautiful area.

Lovely, but hilly, botanical gardens

By DavidG897 |

Drove scenic Wildcat Canyon Road to come here.

The gardens were pleasant to wander around though it was hilly and the map and signage did not boost directional confidence.

A fabulous park with a tremendous variety of possible activities

By Charles S |

Tilden Park has so much that is is hard to know where to begin. For kids, there is the steam train, the merry-go-round, swimming at lake Anza, feeding the animals at the very nice Little Farm (celery and lettuce only), and the Nature Education Center and Museum. (Get a map here too.) And just a 1/4 mile walk up the Loop Road (no cars) from the nature center is Jewel Lake with ducks and turtles frequently seen. There are also a number of very short easy trails in the area.

For somewhat older kids and adults there are lots of other hiking or running trails. Connected to Tilden Park to the north is Tilden Nature Area, and connected to that is Wildcat Canyon Regional Park. Together they run for about six miles, with Wildcat Creek and a various trails going pretty much the whole length of the valley. Perhaps a mile to the east, and parallel is the Nimitz Way along the San Pablo Ridge, and there are several connecting trails between the two. My favorite is the Wildcat Peak Trail (now temporarily closed due to a landslide) with a fantastic 360 degree view from the top or the Laurel Canyon Trail. Dog walkers seem to like the Meadows Canyon Trail - which is not in the Nature Area. Perhaps of note, the Nimitz way is paved (but no cars) so it is good when the other trails are muddy, or for strollers, or bikes.

The only negatives might be that both Poison Oak is abundant and ticks are common in Tilden Park. And I still have a little trouble that the hills will go from a lush green now to brown by early summer.

Tilden Regional Park - East pay

By Subramanian P |

I recently visited Tilden Regional park while i went to visit University of California, Berkeley. Tilden Regional park is nearby UC , Berkeley and had good scenic views of the bay. This place is a good picnic spot for family with kids as it offers steam train rides, little farm and has even a Merry-Go-Round. Lake ANZA on the park has as a small closed loop trail and the water is rich in toxic algae. . Its a good place to visit on the east bay for sure

Tilden Park a great Berkeley and East Bay public land

By JFHolz |

Tilden park is a continuation of the Hill-Parks that ring the eastern hills bordering San Francisco bay. It is very beautiful and relaxing, it has great walks, a steam train for kids of all ages, and views in many directions.

Great choice for families and nature lovers

By Ruth T |

Tilden Park is a jewel in the Berkeley hills where families and nature lovers can easily spend a full day exploring and enjoying the offerings. Families must visit the LIttle Farm, the Carousel and the Steam Trains; kids can feed pigs and goats, ride on a vintage carousel animal and chug through the redwoods on a small scale, open-air train. There are miles of hiking trails with sweeping bay and inland views. Inspiration Point trail is paved, and good year round.

A Hidden Gem

By chefmendo |

Tilden Park is located up in the Berkeley hills and provide a variety of places for recreation and fun or just to get some solitude, relaxation, and reconnection with nature. There is a 18 hole public golf course with a golf range. There is a mini train ride for children(and adults too). There is an animal farm where you can feed cows, goats, pigs, chickens, and other farm animals. Nearby is a small nature museum where there are displays of the plants and animals of the park. There’s a merry go round and a lake with a sandy beach to swim or sunbathe. There are many hiking trails and biking on the road. There are many places to picnic with tables and areas you can reserve if you plan to have a party. Overall, a wonderful place for the family and for adults, too.

Beautiful Tilden

Berkeley Hills. Miles of scenic driving, hiking. A place for kids at the little Farm, Carousel, Lake Anza. Golf course, botanical gardens. The best of Berkeley!

Acres and acres of adventure right near Berkeley!

By ncarlosdorado |

Several times a week I bike up through Tilden Park, ascending up to over 1,600 ft elevation in about 7 miles from N. Berkeley. The views from Grizzly Peak Blvd. are spectacular: More than 180 degree vistas of SF Bay, the bridges, etc. Further into the park are Inspiration Point, parking for a couple dozen cars, and trailhead for a 4 mile paved path (bikes, strollers, walkers), with views off toward the north that give glimpses of peaks in Sonoma County, views to the east of Mt. Diablo, and to the west: Mt. Tamalpais, Angel Island, Golden Gate, Bay Bridge and SF. All of this is only a 15 minute drive or 30 minute bike ride from urban Berkeley. What a treasure! Visit for an hour or all day.

Little Farm

By Sarah K |

Little farm is the best! Bring celery and lettuce to feed the goats. A great way to make you smile, no matter what your age. Went with my 22 year old daughter to walk down memory lane of her childhood visits - we loved it.

Wonderful, scenic panorama on an easy walk suitable for all ages

By BellisimaSF |

Tilden is a beautiful park with all kinds of trails but I am going to recommend one I have been doing for over 3 decades. It is paved and not too strenuous, so suitable to bring healthy older people on, as well as children. You only have to keep an eye out for bicycles, as they share this broad, well-maintained trail with pedestrians. The easiest way to get to the park is to drive up Spruce from the Berkeley campus all the way to the very top of the hill, where It ends at the entrance to the park. As you enter the road turns into Grizzly Peak and you just follow this windy road for a couple of miles until you get to Inspiration Point, on your left. Park and head out on the trail to see vast, lovely views on both sides. A nice, doable walk of about one hour is to walk about 2 miles to and through the eucalyptus grove, then turn back. Or, if you have the energy and don't mind a bit steeper hill, turn left onto the dirt path that branches out on your left just at the end of the eucalyptus grove and climb this short trail to the top, where a small stone rotunda will offer you a really spectacular view of the whole east bay and beyond. Well worth the climb!

Nice local park

By Pavel K |

Just a stone's throw away from Downtown Berkeley, a nice stretch of nature with good trails and some excellent views of the Bay (take the Seaview trail!). Get there off the beaten path: walk all the way up from Shattuck Ave (a long uphill but very rewarding) to get a glimpse of the Berkeley way of life and see lovely places like Shasta Road, Park Hills etc. Also, take the paths (almost invisible, easily missable stairs)!

Farm animals, steam train, lake and carrousel

By Arkelanor |

Tilden is a hidden gem with lots of things to do and easily accessible within the Berkeley mountains, a mere 7 minutes drive from downtown Berkeley. The little farm is home to cows and calves, goats and sheep, rabbits, chickens, ducks, geese, rams, turkeys and a ginormous pig. Bring lettuce or celery and see them running toward your group for a quick bit. It's a huge hit with little ones! A short drive will take you to the carrousel (a great place to go in the winter), the steam trains ($5 for 3 rides, close on weekdays) and the famous Lake Anza where you can take a dip in the summer months and even have your pooch with you in the non beach area. It's a wonderful park to go hiking and enjoy both the views of the bay or the views of the valley behind it while you sip a glass of wine with cheese and crackers on a bench, a log or picnic table. But you do need a car because it's big very big and the activities are not too close from each other.

A great Regional Park with something for everyone

By Darril d |

An easy to access park with many picnic areas, a swimming lake, a golf course and driving range, minature train amd pony rides, play fields, even a classic merry-go-round. A true jewell of the east bay and part of the extensive East Bay Regional Park system

The Park that connects 5 towns/citys in amazing drive and view of the scenry

By alexsH3770LR |

wat not 2 luv. this is the regional park that goes from Berkeley, Fish Ranch Rd, Albany, Kensington, Pinole, Walnut Creek, Concord and Martinez. All the towns and city connects by this very Regional Park. there's a play area, train park, many bike paths, joggers and hikers, kids and family can enjoy and drive to enjoy the scenery and view of each town and city by this very regional park. There was the horse riding area and few other things to do but do to lack of funding, rangers and staff it had to be close down...

Peaceful adventure

By roisin171 |

The park is a huge area. I stayed mainly around Lake Anza. Here you can swim, lifeguard on duty with plenty of picnic areas near by. The toilets were surprisingly clean for outdoors. I went on the 'Rough Path' around the lake and i advice extreme caution at some bits where there is literally no path except small foot holes to get around. Later followed the Selby trail which was lovely; some picture moments along the way. Would go again for a proper walk.

A wonderful nature retreat minutes from urban and suburban areas..

Those of us living in the San Francisco Bay Area, especially the in east bay are lucky to have TIlden Regional Park along with many other parks making up the East Bay Regional Park system. Tilden is 2000+ acres of nature with many walking, hiking, and biking trails. Some trails connect with Wildcat Canyon and Sibley Volcanic Regional Parks as well as Claremont Canyon. Most trails are dog friendly (on leash). Only the very kid friendly Nature Area, Visitor Center/Museum, and Little Farm area doesn't allow dogs. With a mix of grassy hills, oak forests, redwood forests, chaparral, creeks, and a couple of small "lakes" (you can swim in Lake Anza during swimming season), you can head for the area that your body and soul needs on any given day. There are many picnic areas, a real merry-go-round, and mini steam train (dogs can go on the ride too), and a botanical garden to explore. Inspiration Point and other hilltop vistas offer excellent expansive, often 360 views of San Francisco Bay and the other side of the east bay hills and valleys toward Mount Diablo, Briones, and San Pablo Bay. Just as important as the natural beauty, Tilden has plenty of bathroom, trash bins, and parking facilities. If you are looking to host an event, the beautiful Brazilian Room is available. Enjoy the outdoors (while watching out for the Lyme disease-carrying ticks)!

Outdoor beauty at its best

By pglejm |

We hiked about 7 miles throughout Tilden hoping to follow the signs and trail markers but somehow kept going off our intended hike by just a little bit. We weren't worried as we knew we were headed in the right direction (generally speaking that is). We hiked shortly after a rain storm so we did encounter quite a bit of slippery spots but it was to be expected. We wound up coming out close to the top of Nimitz Rd and just hiked it all the way down, a nice gently rolling paved path with cyclists and hikers heading up with no mud on their feet! HA! Beautiful views at the top of Nimitz Rd of the reservoir and small lakes.

Something for everyone

Hiking, swimming, golfing, wedding events, and more in Tilden Park. We hosted two catered events at the Brazilian Room for 100 people this year and they were exceptional.

Don't miss the Botanical Garden!

By minimuffinlover |

This large park is well worth a visit, encompassing, as it does, a variety of landscapes and micro-climates. Not to be missed is the free botanical garden with plantings from every county in California.

Something for Everyone

Plenty of things to do to spend a half a day here for the whole family, but what stands out in my mind was when driving away around sunset and seeing the awesome view along the Grizzly Peak Blvd. of the setting sun and the Golden Gate Bridge. Awesome!

Huge Park in the Hills

By Thomas V |

This is part of the green lungs of the Bay Area. It's a huge regional park up above Berkeley with all sorts of attractions, including a carousel. Come for a picnic.

Perfect for an Inter-Generational Hike

By MaudraS |

We were together for Thanksgiving - grandparents, parents and grandkids....3 generations with a large range of mobility and energy expenditure needs. We needed to get some exercise and sunshine. This approx. 2 mile hike provided everyone with what they needed. Vistas of the Bay, and of Mt. Diablo did not disappoint either. A bit muddy at places prompted hand-holding and closeness, which we all enjoyed.

Great for trekking

If you love nature and want to spend a day hiking, sauntering around the lake, and catch up on some activities like taking the steam train, etc, it will be a day well spent.

Go for a hike, a picnic, a swim or a visit to the Little Farm

By hopeanderson09 |

I love Tilden--it's so many things. In season I like to swim at Lake Anza, but this time I just picnicked at one of the many areas set aside for the purpose. There are benches and grills, and it's rarely crowded. Kids will enjoy the Carousel and the Farm.

Outdoor relaxation...or work-out

By Michael W |

My folks lived near here, and I love this park. Bike friendly, hiker walker friendly, even horse friendly. I've both hiked and biked from Tilden Park (Grizzly Peak entrance) and Wildcat Canyon (in Richmond, Wildcat Canyon entrance).
You can make a day of it roundtrip, or do parts. This week - this spring- should be beautiful with the refresh of all the plants with the rains. A lot of Scotch broom (yellow flowering, invasive shrub) borders the main trails, but there should also be awesome displays of wildflowers. I've listened to the horned owls in the evening in Wildcat Canyon, and the pacific Tree Frog will thrill you this years will the calls.
Get out and enjoy this great, easy access park. Bring water and snacks - you'll probably stay out longer than you planned. As at all parks, leave your valuables at home, or stash them in the trunk of the car BEFORE parking. Not everybody is watching the wildlife, or the views.

Good for a moderate hike in a wooded location

By Ryan S |

I was hoping for more of a park here, but this is definitely a wooded location with plenty of hiking trails, a quarry, and a lake to swim in during season. There's also a nature education center, a small farm, and a playground but it was overrun with little children and their parents. I guess if you have pre-school age kids, then this place is for you; it just wasn't what I was looking for.

So many trails to hike, something for everyone plus The Little Farm for children

By Pauline958 |

I am a hiker and have hiked just about all trails. For the novice try Inspiration PT. It is flat and you go out and come back. Just go as far as you want. Many benches for a rest, great views, parking.and toilets..
Children adore the little train, open weekends and the amerry go round. At the Little Farm bring celery or romaine lettuce to feed the animals.

This park is fantastic.

Great hiking trails and views

By Explore796204 |

Large wilderness area with trails, golf course, and fabulous views of the San Francisco Bay and Mount Diablo. The best trail starts at Inspiration Point and goes for 4 miles along the top if the ridge - you can see in both directions - the sunrise is spectacular - trail is paved but closed to traffic - good trail for jogging also.

Tilden has sooo much to offer

By Gilbert F |

The Tilden Park Golf Course is really beautiful and challenging.

The paved Nimitz trail starting at inspiration point is wonderful all year long. It offers miles and miles of gently rolling and paved walking or biking. We see all types out there: families, dog walkers, runners, bikers and nature lovers. The views both East and West are fabulous.

The Wildcat Gorge trail along Wildcat Creek and up to Anza Lake is beautiful, shaded mostly and great for a relatively gentle dog stroll.

I feel very fortunate to live close to Tilden Park. What a great regional destination.

Picnic and Hiking in Tilden Park

By Infodiva L |

I love this park. On a beautiful day it can get crowded and it can be challenging to park. I love to hike and picnic in this location.

Spacious Park in the city

By RuthD4518 |

Beautiful park a little complicated getting to our meeting place because there is no map of the park. Great vistas with beautiful view of city. Toilets in poor condition

Perfect outdoors with something for everyone

By Fernando B |

In the Berkeley hills, where you would need to inform in advance, what you would like to do: Hiking? Cycling? swimming in Lake Anza? Golf? A little farm?Camping? Definitely you need a car to get there and moving around. Or a wedding to organize? The park offers you plenty of options in a green space. I cannot highly recommend it enough a pure gem of Berkeley.

A nice afternoon hike.

By Melissa C |

An easy, scenic hike with beautiful views at the top. We did this with our son and daughter-in-law who are in their early 30's and we're in our sixties - worked out well!

Great smelling Uucalyptus trees

By Jeffrey P |

Sun and sun with short stretch of Eucalyptus trees. Bring binoculars, water, some health snacks, a camera and comfortable shoes and be aware its not a flat path you'll be walking- hills and inclines are common

Urban oasis

By Karen H |

Tilden is part of the East Bay Regional Park system and borders the eastern side of Berkeley at the top of the Berkeley Hills. It is a great place to hike (but seriously don't go jogging by yourself around dusk - every few years someone is attacked by mountain lions - I'm not kidding); picnic; or camp. The area also includes a small swimming lake; old style carousel; and my sons' favorite - miniature steam trains (about a 10 minute ride loop - my kids went every couple of weeks when they were young!). It truly is an urban oasis and safe (except for those mountain lions!!!).

Enjoyable visit

By chicagoannie1 |

Hiking/running trail and large, open grassy area. We used to come here with our dog over 30 years ago and returned to the area to see one of our favorite spots.

Gorgeous hikes and views of San Francisco and Golden Gate!

By Heliana Mano |

Tilden is a gem for Berkeley. What an amazing park. We have already hiked here twice and look forward to hike again and try new trails. Easily accessible during the week with bus nr 65 and weekends with bus nr 67 from Berkeley downtown up to the park. So far we have done the Meadows trail which offered beautiful terrain and scenic views, Seaview Trail which had gorgeous views of Mount Diablo - Golden Gate bridge and San Pablo Reservoir, Lupine trail which was cute and narrow -spotted a cute rabbit here, Grizley trail and ended with a breathtaking sunset view at Canyon Road. Another hike included Wildcat Peak trail which had breathtaking views of SF skyline & Golden Gate - San Pablo Reservoir, Nimitz way, Wildcat George trail which was along a small creek so it was shaded and misty, Lake Anza loop which had interesting terrain and beautiful reflections of the trees into the lake and ended it with Selby trail that brings you back to the little farm campsite. Gorgeous. Can't wait to explore more trails in beautiful Tilden! Bring a snack and plenty of water - many points where to refill your water bottle and access bathrooms which are very well maintained :)

Wilderness Area in the East Bay of the San Francisco Area

By lynnf95 |

If you want a great nature break with spectacular views, places to walk on easy trails or hike, and even where you can bring your dog (use essential oils to deter ticks!) head over to Tilden. The photo shows a reservoir in the distance, probably outside of the park. There's a carousel here (fun for all ages, check opening times), a native garden (ditto for times), a lake, a small train, and even a golf course (which I've only driven by.) It's a treasure, somehow saved from development, and an oasis in a highly populated area. AC Transit has a bus to the area. Easy parking. Put valuables and any bags or packs in your trunk before you park, just like you should do in any area where visitors travel. This isn't a high crime area and it's not dense with people at all. Take a picnic, as there are many places to stop, and enjoy your break from the hustle.

Wonderful hiking trails

I have been attending this park for many years. The views are absolutely beautiful at any time of the day or night. Great environment to get a good workout.

In the hills in-between Castro valley and Oakland

I visited the park for and outdoor wedding, the views were breath taking wide open area with many trees and serenity

Good place for a hike

By Sandy Miranda R |

There are mountain lions here. If you are one in a million, you might see one. Nice hikes and water elements. Not as beautiful as the Peninsula hikes but it’s the best that is available in the east bay.
We prefer other areas just a bit further east.

Carousel

By susanbV4890DH |

Great organization, those with reservations had their own line and could have first pick of “horses”. The rides were not crowded and the open doors allowed plenty of fresh air.

Nice for a walk or run

By Nikmaxa21 |

Huge park to walk or run. You can meet here cows, deer, rabbits, birds and picturesque views! A lot of hills.

Great place to wander around

By Bill L |

Lots of scenery, wildlife, wild flowers. Easy to spend a day just looking at the various areas in the park.

Fifth Scale Steam Trains, Carrosel, Lake, playgrounds

By MBA-Editor |

I visited here many times as a child, mostly to the Merry-go-round and the steam engine trains. It has hardly changed since then, but it has been well maintained.
The park is spread out in that you have to get in the car and drive to each attraction. I never went to the lake as a child so I was pleased to finally go there as an adult. It is the only time I have seen lifeguards wearing sweats! I am from southern California, so the water and air temperatures were a bit nippier than I would normally want, but for a San Franciscan, or someone from the north, its probably warm.
I love being surrounded by the trees and fresh air!

Best park in the East Bay

By bill49 |

Best view of the entire Bay Area from Grizzerly Peak, visit the steam train. or just hike around the various parks.

So. Many. Things. To. Do.

By DCPurses |

This park is awesome. There is so many things to do, it's actually scary to think about: walk/run/jog to Inspiration Point, golf, lake anza, little farm, playgrounds, wildcat canyon, redwood trees, steam trains, gorgeous bay views, free parking, shortcut to Lamorinda, nature center, and so much more.

Amazing Wedding Venue

By Karen K |

We attended a wedding in the Brazilian Room in Tilden Park. Admittedly, you drive up a lot of crazy, winding roads to get there--but once we arrived, it was absolutely gorgeous--and perfect for a totally memorable event. The grounds are fabulous--wonderful plantings, spectacular views.
