Napa Wine Tour - Trefethen

By KBWorldTravler51 |

Trefethen Winery - Villa Wine tasting

My husband and I had 1 day in Napa so we did a significant amount of research on the best wineries to visit and do a wine tasting. We found Trefethen online since they also highlighted white wine options, so we did some additional research & one tasting they offered us was the Villa tasting experience that included a charcuterie board. We were totally blown away with the entire experience. The drive into Trefethen was beautiful & the main building was striking; we later learned this was the original mill where grapes were processed in the 1800’s. We were greeted with a water & glass of wine while we waited for our tasting, which was relaxing.

Shortly after arriving our host Hunter welcomed us & walked us over to the villa for the tasting; along the way he gave us history of Trefethen. The villa was originally the residence of the Trefethen family & truly was beautiful. Hunter got us settled then the chef brought out the charcuterie board. Hunter then spent some time getting to know us & what type of wines we liked. He spent a significant amount of time explaining the wines & helping us enjoy the experience while still giving us time alone to have conversation and enjoy. I mentioned that I really enjoy a Rose’ wine; even though it was not part of the tasting he quickly brought us a tasting of their Rose; which I really enjoyed (we ended up buying 4 bottles to take with us to Lake Tahoe for the week). Hunter truly enhanced the experience for us; he made us feel comfortable while listening to our preferences and making recommendations. He even helped me find a red wine that I will definitely try in the future (this is a big deal because I have struggled to find a red wine that I enjoy & does not give me a headache). As we continued to talk with Hunter we learned he was a Sommelier; which really explains all his knowledge & the ability to make us feel so comfortable during the entire experience. The visit to Trefethen truly made our trip to Napa Valley amazing. We ended up joining the wine club, so we are looking forward to receiving our first shipment in October.

Family owned 3rd generation gem!

By Nancy R |

Amazing location & grounds supported by 3rd generation family! Tasting menu - wine pairing smallest I’ve seen by far beware. St. Francis wine food pairing meal was giant in comparison. Birthday discount here! Scored free shipping. The Dry Riesling was worth the trip alone. Large garden insight great food to pair. Great hospitality & dog friendly with dog toys for purchase!

We were a very large group, Creighton was wonderful on out twilight tour. Super duper esrlier in the day we had gone to Opusbut here I found great wine and great people. I had to buy their last 2 bottles of a 96. That was AWSOME. just like the staff, great tasting great food great fun. The wine I loved the the company even better. Thank You Creighton just remember Dragon's Blood :*)

lovely!

We went tasting with friends. Staff was informed and friendly. Facility was beautiful and comfortable. The wines were very good! We bought a wonderful Cab. Thanks for a lovely afternoon tasting!

Reviewed the reserves

By Jim B |

We visited and took the $25 option to taste the reserves. We had five of them and they were all good. We purchase a Pinot Noir for the rest of our trip (actually sipping that right now). All wine comes from their estate vineyards, and the whole area is beautiful.

Dropped in

By fayesno1son |

We had no tastings scheduled for Sunday, 6/10, so set out to see what the afternoon would bring. A host at a previous winery suggested Trefethen because of their history and their wines. We purchased the basic tasting for $25 pp. Trish was our guide for the tasting. When she learned of my occupation, she began having us try different wines with similar qualities. It turned out to be a fun and educational visit, well worth the price. During the visit, I noticed the other hosts as they interacted with other parties. All the hosts were engaging with their guests, a sign of the group commitment to the customer. A fun hour or so was had by all. Trefethen is definitely worth checking out.
Cheers.

Best tasting - Wonderful winery.

Trefethen Winery was a place very unique to visit. Family owned and the employees were very hospitable. Had a wonderful tour of the beautiful grounds. Easy parking and especially enjoyed trying their "Sin" and "Dragon's Tooth" wines.
Highly recommend a visit.
We were there the first week of August 2014.

We've been to Trefethen on multiple occasions but this last time was disappointing. Most of the Napa wineries charge $20-$30 for their tastings, but most of them will at least credit one of them back if you buy some wine. My wife is a big fan of their cab franc so we were going to buy wine anyway. However we thought we'd do their reserve and classic tasting since we were there.

First, if you're planning to go here make sure you call ahead. Their regular tasting room was hit by the earthquake so they have a temporary tasting room with limited room. They were gracious about seating us for a tasting without a reservation.

Why the negative review then you ask? Well, the classic tasting is supposed to be your choice of five for $25 and the reserve is all five for $35. We let Adam know we weren't big white fans, but got all their whites anyway. We were shorted their '11 cabs as a consequence. We bought the wine we came for with the bonus of the cost of the tasting. Sorry to see this since we liked to stop here

Despite the temporary tent it is still a great experience

By ianbeavis |

Since the earthquake their normal tasting room has become a comfortable, air conditioned tent. This has not affected the hospitality or the professionalism you find here.

You just need to make a booking in advance.

A Fun Place to Taste

By LaurenDella |

Tasting at Trefethen is a lively, good time, not your typical experience. Ask for Shannon, she's great! Try their "Dragon's Tooth" (a nod to their Welsh heritage) red and their Viognier which is sublime. Beautiful grounds, easy parking.

Nice, Family-Owned Winery

By J E |

While visiting Napa we made reservations to visit Trefethen, since we really enjoy their wines. When we arrived and throughout the tasting, they were very hospitable, friendly and knowledgeable! Our “wine educator,” Joe was very helpful in describing their wines and allowing us to taste anything we might be interested in. He did an excellent job explaining the property and family ho owns it as well (stuff we really like to learn, as it personalizes the wine for us!).
Their property is HUGE! It was nice learning about the various blocks and how they farm and manage vine replanting.
We would definitely recommend this experience to anyone visiting Napa!

Excellent Wines but make an appointment

By Glenn K |

This place is outstanding and you need to meet Adam. He is a fantastic Sommelier and will not only take your wine tastes into consideration when pouring but will also give you great tips on the area (he told us to go to Mustards for lunch and he nailed it!!!). This is a must visit for any wine lover coming to the area.

Great wines

By Amos Ber |

You have to book starting what Stan from knight wine tours did.
This is all about wine tasting so I will not tell you about the decor etc.
My wife had the regular25$ ( she wanted mainly white) and me and my son had the 35$ reserve each.
This was an amazing stRt to our wine tour.
In The reserve wine tasting each wine was better than the other.
My wife also liked the white wines she tasted
So if you like good wine book and go there
After them we went to caymus vineyard which is a complete NO NO especially when compared to this one

Good wines, high tasting fees.

By eke-ono |

Nice setting and the wines are very good. $100 for two people to taste and they don't refund your fee if you buy wine.

Fun stop, lovely wines.

By LynnSeattle |

We drove into Trefethen for our first stop of wine tasting trip on a glorious Fall day and it was such a delight. The temporary tasting room was pleasant and I recommend a tasting appointment to get a relaxing and informative view of the many deliious wines they make. Keith was such a knowledgeable person and it was great to hear him talk about food and wine pairings. It was just a great stop and amongst the four in our party, there were wines each of us really liked

Wine Trip

By Ed D |

Again one of our favorites. Shannon was the first wine educator we had and we still love her and try to see her each visit. They have some good whites ans some great reds. Dragons Tooth is a super wine and their Cabernets are top of the line.

top 5 Napa Valley Cabs

By Paul S |

Great tasting room, nice whites but some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley. The folks pouring behind the counters are very nice to talk with and knowledgeable.

Pleasant surprise. Turned out to be great choice.

By TourMD |

Booked four out of the eight available places for a tour and tasting which is available only once a day and a very reasonable rate, so was surprised we were the only ones.

Needless to say Enrique was pleasant, informative, enthusiastic and obviously loves his work. Learned a lot, sampled several (yes- you can spit) and pleased to purchase for later in week. Very pleased we chose both this vineyard and this tour. Well worth it

Great!

By Brian R |

I stopped at Trefethen on a quick weekend trip to Napa. It was a great stop in the limited time I had. The staff was great and very informative about the wines and winemaking in general. The wines were great as well, and I will soon be joining the wine club. I definitely recommend Trefethen if you are looking for a great all around experience.

Use GPS,get off the highway and enjoy!

By Michael V |

We really enjoyed this place, the building has a cool history, the wine was great and I️ liked how they made the tasting very private for everyone, we had Jorge and he was great!

Lovely tasting room

By TPaulson |

We really enjoyed the appearance of the tasting room. Very warm and friendly. They are doing some renovating to the front entrance outside. Can't wait to see it finished next time we are there.

Very Informative Tour

By TXSnoot |

Prepare to spend a few hours here if you take the tour. It's totally worth it, very informative. Trefethen was my favorite tasting as well. Bought into the club and can't wait for my first shipment!

Romantic and Relaxing

By Heartdish |

Trefethen was the first vineyard that I visited in Napa. The wine was amazing, my favorite was,
Dragon's Tooth. Loved the history behind the wine and the family business. We had a great time, had we arrived earlier in the day, I'm not sure we would have traveled any further.

Fun times!!

By KiwiantzUSA |

We didn’t have an appointment and it was late afternoon but they found a spot for a small wine tasting. Be prepared to be amazed at the wine and history during the presentation of the different wines! We had a wonderful time and left with a few bottles. Stopped and took a picture of Kate’s tree, you need to visit to understand!

Twilight with Trefethen

By MartitaChicago |

Highly recommend Twilight at Trefethen. It's a delightful, relaxing experience at the vineyard where you better understand the fundamentals of wine and have one of the best environments for a tasting.

Loved this place and the tent

By vamdirect |

Excellent wines. Try their Reisling and Rose Pinot Noir which is a fun wine. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Make a reservation as they have limited space. The estate is large and the tent quite unique. Not a glamorous place but I'd go back there again. I called at 9.45 am and we were there at 10 am for tasting.

Wonderful Experience

By Melissa C |

I had a little bit of free time on a recent business trip and was glad to hear that Trefethen accepted walk-ins. I was seated right away and treated to 5 tastings and 1 throwback tasting for $25. A great deal! An overall laid back environment with no pressure to purchase or join. My server Fabian was polite, friendly and very knowledgeable. I am glad I was able to take some time to visit and will be purchasing plenty of bottles to ship back home.

A top winery

By Philip G |

I have been a member of Trefethen Winery for over 30 years, in those years I have upgraded my membership. I feel they have the best reds in their reserves and the top red in Halo. They bend over backwards to make our visits a top experience

Great Place for a tasting!

By Jeremiah D |

Dragon's Tooth. That is all I have to say. Dan Noonan was our Wine Educator and by far the best we experienced during our 4 day stay in Napa and Sonoma. He had a terrific way of describing complex flavors to those of us with a less sophisticated palate.

Absolutely Fantastic!!

By LasVegasLasVegas |

My husband and I have been visiting Napa for several years. I might say we are slightly disappointed in how Napa has changed over the years. However, Trefethen has not. They truly get it and know how to create a magical experience and make great wine! Trefethen has been one of our favorites and continues to be. Shannon assisted us during our tasting. She is absolutely fantastic! She is very knowledgeable, personable and does a tremendous job of welcoming you in and making you feel at home. She introduced us to Michael, the viticulturist and he was also incredible, very knowledgeable and most helpful. I should mention, the wine is absolutely fantastic! We are huge fans of the Dragon's Tooth and the Halo. Seriously, amazing!

Decent wine, Busy tasting, Great shopping

By FineDineLovr |

I had to think about whether to give this one 3 or 4 stars, so here's what got it four...

Wine: 4 stars. It's good, but certainly not great, and reasonably priced. Again, totally subjective.

Grounds: 5 stars. The grounds are beautiful and offer many opportunities for "kodak moments."

Tasting: 2 stars. We felt like we were at a bar. There was very little information given, and very little positive interaction.

Shopping: 5 stars! Holy cannoli! These people had some beautiful wine-themed products for sale, and for what they were, most were reasonably priced! Loved it!

One of the best in Napa Valley

By KarrieSue78 |

We visited Trefethen on our first visit to Napa two years ago and again on our second visit last week. This is one of our favorite wineries in Napa Valley. The winers are so great we just joined their club. They have a nice variety of good stuff - from a fun "porch pounder" white blend they call Quandry to a fantastic cab franc with a nice taste of dill on the finish. (We love cab franc so this was a big win for us.)

The atmosphere is equally wonderful. It's classic Napa Valley in the sense that it has a dark wood bars and farm table that made us feel warm and cozy while visiting during the Fall. But its refreshingly free of some of the "themes" or gimmicks of some of the larger Napa wineries - you won't find a castle, torture chamber, Italian villa or Persian palace here. Just some lovely grounds and a warm and inviting tasting room from people with a long history of making good wine. The service is also fantastic - knowledgable about the wine and available to help without ever making you feel rushed.

Overall, a definite must-visit for anyone's trip to Napa Valley.

Amazing visit- fantastic service and knowledge

By Laborie92 |

Fantastic winery with a very friendly, knowledge staff. Tasting menu was well developed and offered an excellent range of white and red options. Unique history, family owned atmosphere. Highly recommend.

EXCELLENCE!

By CheLa N |

My husband and I recently traveled around the country as a retirement gift for my husband after 30 years of being in the US Navy. Napa, CA. was one of the places that we looked forward to experiencing. After a very disappointing stop at a wine museum, we were a bit skeptical walking into the beautiful double doors of Trefethen Vineyards. What greeted us was a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The Host has excellent customer service, gracious and very warm! I regret that I didn't write down his name. We were ushered to the wine tasting room. The ambiance was again, warm. The Sommelier was very knowledgeable of the wines. Needless to say, we were far from disappointed with our overall experience here. We not only purchased our favorite bottle of wine, we also joined the club! Trefethen comes very highly recommended! We plan on coming back!

Kate was a Delight!

By TravelWineFoodie |

From the moment we walked in until the time we left an hour and a half later, we were treated like valued guests. The winery was lovely we sampled many, many wines and were regaled with stories of the grapes, the Trefethen family and interesting stories and recommendations of other places to eat and see in the valley. I would strongly reccomend the you spend some time at this lovely vineyard!

Casual & Friendly Vibe

By SEM2REM |

Trefethen rounded out a perfect Napa day. We really enjoyed the casual and friendly vibe from all the staff. We'd not had any of their wines before and they are delicious. I wish I could remember our tasting hosts name because he was fantastic. He listened to our feed back and made wonderful recommendations based on that. We joined their wine club and probably wouldn't have if he hadn't personalized our tasting so well. As beautiful as the tasting room is, the only downside for me was that there isn't an outdoor tasting area. The tasting room is a little dark for my liking, but that's just really splitting hairs. We had a fantastic experience and look forward to returning.

Educational formal tasting

By kozulich |

This place lives up to the preconception of a Napa valley vineyard. It is an estate winery with 500 acres of vineyards. The tastings, which run $25-$35 are somewhat formal. You will have a sommelier who pours and explains about each wine as well as giving history of the winery. We recieved a complimentary bonus pour of a 1984 cabernet sauvignon which was excellent. Water and breadsticks were provided. The experience took about an hour. I found all the wines in the 11 tastings we did to be quite dry, high alcohol styles, including the riesling. We were in agreement that if one were to do only one tasting collection, the "essentials" selection was the way to go.

"Like a fine wine..."

By 77Tom77 |

We couldn't have been more surprised and pleased by the wine-tasting experience we had at this winery. Not only was the tasting one of the more reasonable from a cost perspective, it was also one of the more entertaining. We were treated courteously and the atmosphere was extremely pleasant. In fact, we enjoyed our visit so much, we went back the next day to visit the gift shop again. The staff was pleasant and courteous. The wine was excellent. We will definitely visit this vineyard again on our next trip to the Napa Valley.

Trefethen Winery in Napa, CA

By timyanks |

Visited Trefethen with friends from Tucson on July 28th. We did not have a reservation but thankfully they did fit us in. And most fortunate for us Andres Plancarte was our wine educator. Our tasting was their small batch wines that only sold at the winery. Andres added two additional to the five that we tasted. He was a great teacher on the nuances of the different varietals. We asked many quesitons and he was able to answer them. Andres was personable, friendly, easy going, and enjoyable to talk to with. The tasting area is very large, open and comfortable. We stayed 2 hours and walked out with five bottles and our expectations greatly exceeded. When you go to Trefethen request Andres for your wine educator. Your experience will be enhanced.

An Evening to Remember

By J2inBrooklyn |

After visiting one vineyard earlier in the day, we rested and ate, and then proceeded to stop into Trefethen for the evening tour. The young man who greeted us (sorry ... can't recall his name) was an excellent host and took the time to talk us through the history of the company and layout of the vineyard. The wine tasting was a great experience, covering quite a few of their award winning labels and vintages. We ended up joining the wine club and have been enjoying regular shipments of their wines ever since.

Worth a stop

By Dukefamilyof4 |

Stopped here towards the end of a day of winery tours and enjoyed a relaxing tasting. The tasting room was nice and quite large. Service was attentive but not overbearing. Drive up to the winery was also quite nice.
Personally, I wasn’t fond of the wines but the ambiance was nice.

Finally got to see an old favorite.

By Brian M |

Trefethen is a great safety valve on any wine menu - if you don't know the other wines but see Trefethen, you'll be happy. So after driving past this winery the past few years, we finally booked a tour and tasting.

Michael gave a phenomenal tour. He's fantastic because he doesn't dumb anything down when talking to you. You get a real feel for all of the science involved as well as the art of it all. I learned more out of this tour and tasting than any other and I've done plenty.

The tasting itself was great and this insane table made out of the old tree they lost in the 2014 quake is just something to behold. Then we got a quick side visit from Janet Trefethen and her dog. Pretty cool.

Our favorite winery in Napa

By ChrisInna |

This was our fifth visit to Trefethen. We love the wines. Shannon is simply the best! We know we are on vacation when we drive down the driveway, see the beautiful olive trees and vines. This is an experience like none other.

Wines are expensive, but very good

By MamaGal |

Tastings are at tables, which I prefer to standing at a bar. An earthquake had damaged their previous tasting room and they were still fixing it when we visited. My favorites were the Riesling (dry), SIN Rose, Cabernet Reserve and the Dragon's Tooth. Our friends joined their wine club. I would return to this winery.

Great wine / Ok tasting

By C_Zahn |

We stopped by on a Saturday morning and glad we got there early as it seems to get busy. It was a beautiful place. We came b/c we had had the reisling at a couple of restaurants and wanted to try. The tasting was about typical but there were quite a few wines offered and good pours. Really enjoyed the wines for the price and had a case shipped back. They still are good. ;) Just not sure after tasting so many but I do recommend going by and trying if you have the time.

Must visit in the Napa Valley

By Meena R |

A wonderful tasting experience, all the wines were incredible. The staff were fun and knowledgeable especially Karen who was incredible. Recommend the collectible Cabernet tasting and the Halo is standout.

Love this wine!

By Jeff P |

This is a wonderful property with great customer service and awesome wines! I joined the wine club on my last visit and have no regrets! You can't go wrong with the merlot, dragons tooth and Halo!

Throwback Thursday

By Desert_Bella |

Trefethen was our second stop during our first-ever trip to Napa, and we were thrilled we had chosen it.

Kate was our hostess, who we immediately adored. She is a BLAST, such a bubbly and warm personality, but also extremely knowledgeable (she's a Napa native!) and professional.

Our tasting fell on a Thursday, and it turns out Trefethen does Throwback Thursday, where they choose bottles from their library to include with your tasting. Our throwback bottle happened to be a 1994 chardonnay, and it.was.PHENOMENAL. Neither of us have ever really enjoyed chards, so to be honest we were underwhelmed when it was brought out. However, it's 25 years of aging showed us that even whites should definitely be aged! Holy smokes it was incredible. We immediately asked about purchasing a bottle, and there was only one unopened one available. Score! Aside from loving all the wines - especially the '94 chard - we felt it was a wonderful value to have a vintage wine included, and we felt really treated by that.

The building and grounds are stunning, rustic yet chic. Exactly what I imagined Napa being like before arriving! You somehow feel simultaneously that you're sitting in a fancy mansion, yet also that you're cozying up at a good friend's home. The feeling is so laid back and comfortable, a great setting to learn about the winery.

Highly recommend visiting here! Ask for Kate! Make an afternoon of it and visit Laird Family, literally across the road. It's another smaller winery well worth your time. We will be back, Trefethen! In the meantime, we just received our 1994 bottle at home and are looking forward to a special occasion to crack it open.

Our favorite wines in Napa

By Kathryn R |

My husband and I visited Trefethen on our recent trip to Napa during which we visited 8 wineries. As a group, the Trefethen wines were our favorite (many other wineries have outstanding bottles, but Trefethen had the best overall selection). We purchased three bottles from Trefethen--more than from any other winery. Definitely worth a stop on your visit to the Valley!

Great wine and customer service

By Sherilee N |

We had nice visit and tasted great wine. The dry reisling that seems so elusive in the US was one of their best sellers here. Wish we could have tasted it. But we did walk away with the bottle.

A great tasting experience.

By Tony T |

Beautiful spot for a tasting in the Villa. Great history and great wine. Thank you Hunter for the tasting/education. Can't wait for my shipment to arrive tomorrow.

A Gem Among the Abundance of Wineries in Napa Valley

By Douglas T |

Trefethen is one of our favorite places to go. We have been coming to Napa Valley for over 25 years, and have visited many wineries. It is always good to see lots of wineries to get the spin on different areas of Napa Valley and different approaches to wine making. However, if you have limited time, or have never been there, Trefethen is a good choice. Currently as a result of earthquake damage, tasting is in a tent, but the tent has great views over the valley and they have made the best of it. The staff are not simply people who pour wine, they are informed and there is a lot of continuity. This last visit we had a terrific person who gave us lots of information on the vineyards, each wine and even the family. One nice thing about Trefethen, is that all wines are made from their own grapes in the Oak Knoll section in the middle of Napa Valley. Also they are fortunate to have both whites and reds, from Reisling and Chardonnay to Cabernet Freanc, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. You drive in through their beautiful vineyards, which this time of year are full of fall colors. Great views of the mountains on each side of the valley. Next fall the winery will be rebuilt, and tasting will be an even better experience.

Such a Wonderful Experience!

By stchandl |

We had such a wonderful experience at Trefethen. Aiste Nichols, our Wine Educator was a wealth of information and not only on the wines but the history of the winery. We learned so much! The paired food provided was wonderfully prepared and delicious! We rented ebikes from Fat Tire Bike Rentals in downtown Napa and had fun ride out to the estate. Definitely our favorite wine tasting during this latest trip to Napa. Will definitely be back!

A Longtime Fan of the Winery, the Wine, and Angie!

By Jennifer H |

We have been visiting Trefethen since the early 2000s. We have been wine club members as long as I can remember! We buy a ton of wine from them and return to the winery each year. So you can see the love runs deep! The wine is top notch and the experience is always second to none. ANGIE is absolutely, hands-down, a GEM! She always takes great care of us whether it's letting us know about vintages running low, that certain wines are bottled and ready, shipping specials, or checking on us during Hurricane Harvey! ANGIE'S customer service and industry knowledge is what we now hold as the gold standard when visiting other wineries! Trefethen is a must visit for everyone!

A fantastic tour and tasting

By Anthony W |

My wife and I loved our experience at Trefethen. Our guide, Michael, was courteous, knowledgeable, and professional. He was also patient and informative. My wife was really looking forward to the tour and it did not disappoint. The Trefethen tour and tasting were the highlight of our trip to Napa. Highly recommend!

Nice Wine Tasting

By ZsaZsa |

Enjoyed our wine tasting but nothing that stood out for us. Nice property, we were seated upstairs in a nice tasting room with several tables. Our server was nice, but didn't seem to really be into it, didn't seem to share much information. Wines were good, but nothing that blew me away. To be fair, this was our last day, our last of about 12 wineries this trip, so maybe I was just done. Nice place, nice visit, but just that.

Interesting and informative winery tour and tasting

By Don M |

We visited this winery as a corporate outing for about 50 people. Our winery guide, Michael, is a member of the family and gave us an outstanding, informative tour of this 100+ year old family owned winery in Napa Valley. Michael went into great detail about the entire process, from the complexities of the earth and why they plant the various types of vines, to the making of the casks and the wine making process itself.

And the wine, oh the wine! The Reisling, the Chardonnay, the "Dragon's Tooth" and others are all wonderful. Don't pass up an opportunity to visit!

Old enough to die for his country but not sit in a wine tasting room...

By sal23ncc |

My wife booked this tour online as she did many for our trip to Napa.
We understood going in our 18 year old son would not be able to participate in the various tastings because if his age. However, he was still allowed to be present and sit with us while we did the tasting and participate in all the activities, touring, etc. at every vineyard we went to...EXCEPT THIS ONE.
At Trefethen, we were told upon arrival that he'd have to sit in the lobby and wait for us. It seems like a lovely property and we have no idea what the wines were like, nor will we...EVER.
This review is purely based on their inadequate explanation of their policy regarding individuals under 21. So, even if you have adult minors in your party, better pass on these folks.

By JLTDLT |

We love Trefethen! Three years ago we did the Twighlight Tasting which is a MUST for all Trefethen lovers. Wednesday morning we had the pleasure of meeting Shannon who hosted our 10am tasting. We were moving on three hours of sleep due to plane delays. Shannon was delightful - extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. We joined the Halo Club and were able to purchase some of the coveted Halo. Shannon also made a great recommendation for another winery which turned out to be great visit. Thanks Shannon!

Seated Tasting

By jsh44320 |

We showed up without a reservation on a Tuesday afternoon. The young woman at the front desk secured us a table upstairs. It's a large, industrial type room, with barrels in view. For the price, I appreciated that it was a sit-down tasting. Our server was prompt with each pour (we shared a tasting) and courteous. My husband didn't care for the wines, but I thought they were fine. It was the end of the day for us, so were were a bit tired. I would recommend.

Wide Open Setting

By asiahand1 |

It's a beautiful drive through the vineyards to reach the winery . Their wines are great. The tasting room has been redone. And the people there are extra helpful not just inexplaining their own wines but they suggested where we could stop by for lunch and even suggested other wineries that we could visit. Great people in a great winery .

By thtrebuf |

This vineyard/winery experienced some damage in the earthquake so they are currently operating out of a large tent. It's quaint and nice inside and we barely noticed we were in a tent. The gentleman helping us with our wine tasting was personable, laid back and a total foodie (a great match for us!) he had lots of recommendations for food in the valley and really spent some time with us to learn out tastes and preferences. One of the better wineries we went to!

Beautiful setting and an Enthusiastic Staff

By TheCulturedPalate |

The vineyards are gorgeous as is the building where the tastings take place. It looks like a fantastic venue for a wedding. Our host, Dan, is enthusiastic about the wine produced at Trefethen. His knowledge and true enjoyment in his job made our visit wonderful. We will return!

A superb tasting experience

By EvanPSP |

This is a winery that knows how to conduct tastings. We checked in and were brought to a great table. We had a very educated pour'er who knew Trefethen wines extremely well and provided a great education and overview. The pours were significant and he even gave us some additional tastings for wines we wanted to try. Absolutely great experience. I would highly recommend putting this on your tasting schedule.

Great Tasting Experience

By Constance W |

One of the older Napa wineries and well worth the visit if for nothing else to see the "family" home. The original tasting room was damaged in the Napa earthquake and we nothing else available tasting was moved into the very lovely Craftsman house. This alone is worth the fee. The architecture and materials are superb. We had our tasting for four in the parlor. It was relaxing and very enjoyable with no crowds. The wines were good. I would recommend for anyone who has never been.

Dessert Wines

By brewColumbus_Georgia |

This is the place if you like your wines on the sweet side. Our driver knew we had a sweet tooth and recommended this winery. There wasn't a wine that I did not like. Ended up buying a Late Harvest Riesling- It was fantastic. All the staff was great and so much fun to deal with.

Trefethan winery

Amazing winery—out of all the Napa Valley wineries we visited, this was by far the best. Delicious wine, and even better staff. A must-visit in Napa

We did the seated Tasting at the Villa. The setting is gorgeous and it was such an unhurried and relaxing visit there. We tasted a Chardonnay and multiple reds. Good wine and gorgeous setting. We bought three bottles. Shipping was free. I don’t know if that’s their normal or if it was a special. This was one of our favorite tastings of the 13 wineries that we visited during our stay in Napa.

Quandry, white

By gm11227617 |

Very good wine, buttery flavor, similar to their Chardonnay, but with a better taste. The price was $ 25.00 per bottle. Wish I had bought more.

Love the Reds

By Dave H |

Wine tasting only -- we didn't do a tour. All the Reds were excellant. I only wish they were less expensive so I could buy more. One of our favorite wine tastings in Napa.

Best tasting in Napa

By CPullen |

We turned off here on a whim, and it ended up being our favorite tasting room visit. Really lovely but also relaxed, great service staff, tasted wine and not crowded. Just perfect really.

Great welcoming experience!

By D0rindaW |

Our waiter from Redd Wood recommended Trefethen after we described our wine interests. What we experienced was the most fun and entertaining conversation as we selected our wines to taste - Michael guided us though our wine tasting adventure - and provided a knowledgable commentary as well as witty repartee. He absolutely made our experience that much more pleasurable. What made the experience comfortable was we were able to sit at a table rather than standing at the wine bar. Between the 5 of us, we managed to taste every single wine listed on the Classic Tasting menu.

Can't Wait To Return!

By LoloChanel808 |

My husband is a Halo Circle member so naturally during our 4 day visit to Napa we made a reservation to visit their tasting room. Unfortuanately, Trefethen took a direct his from the earthquake last year and suffered some major damage to their property so they have a temporary space near their property. I must admit for a makeshift space it was very quaint. Who knew a tent space could feel so cozy? We were greeted by a very friendly host, Jesus who was great! He poured several glasses of great wine. Many were exclusive to the winery so that was a real treat! He also went into great detail about how each wine is made. Although we had visited Trefethen before, we learned so much more about one of our beloved wineries. I am looking forward to visiting the property again once the renovation is completed. Like everything else Trefethen, I know is will be spectacular! Cheers!

Amazing host in Angie !

By AAGexec |

Had an amazing visit and Angie is by far the best host of any winery. Great wine and an experience that reminds you of being with friends in the perfect setting.

Worth it

By Jack Bauer |

We really enjoyed ourselves. Great tour, amazing wine, and friendly, professional service. We hope to visit again.

Exceptionally Good Wine

By Michael D |

The drive to the winery was beautiful. Tree-lined streets led the way to the beautiful and historic wine tasting building. (I hope it is able to be repaired after the earthquake!) Jesus gave us a wonderful wine tasting experience. He was knowledgeable and very polite. The wine is excellent. I loved the Cabernet, Dragon's Tooth (Malbec blend) and Merlot. I cannot wait to visit again. I highly recommend Trefethen.

Don't miss this on any trip to Napa!

By ilovecalculustoo |

We had come to Napa with a list of wineries we wanted to visit, but the driver said we shouldn't miss this one, and he was so right. We were so happy that we listened to his advice. This turned out to be the highlight of our day in Napa! The grounds are gorgeous and the building is also. Trisha did our tasting, and we loved talking to her and hearing about their wines. We enjoyed all of the red wines in our tasting and ended up buying two to take, but she said we could get several others we liked in Dallas at several stores she shared with us. Overall, I would advise anyone going to Napa to definitely plan a visit here!

Felt like family!

By Taylor D |

This family owned vineyard treated us with the hospitality you'd expect when visiting relatives (in a good way)! We had a large group (13) of women and so they set us in a private garden patio for our tasting. Not only did we have the undivided attention of one of the Trefethen clan, they brought us fruit, veggies and flowers from their onsite garden to sample and take home. This was the first vineyard we visited for the weekend and every other one had a tough time measuring up.

Classy vineyard

By Traveldiva2711 |

Highly recommend the tour and tasting. The grounds are beautiful, the staff was very engaging, no overselling and the beauty of the vineyards was easy to take in. Learned more at this vineyard than any in the area.

One of the friendliest wineries in the Valley!

By Joepure |

Our recent visit to Napa included a visit to Trefethen late in the afternoon. It was a much longer visit than planned because the inviting and engaging staff, welcomed us as if we were old friends! Highly irregular. We joined a group of visitors from Texas and spent the next two hours sampling Trefethen's incredible variety of Cabernets, Chardonays and a wonderful Viogner! It's especially nice to see an actual owner, Loren Trefethen, in the tasting room talking to us regular folks. The wines are priced fairly and should you go and not acquire a few bottles - shame on you! Trefethen is a must visit!

Great experience

By nctraveler315 |

This was our last winery of the day and it did not disappoint. We had a reservation and they had a table set up for us in the tasting room. It was very open with dark woods, loved the tasting room. Our server was happy to pour some that were not on our tasting list. The wines were incredible. We shipped some bottles home and are going to need to order more. Our server was great. He answered all of our questions and made it a very pleasant afternoon for us. As we were leaving downstairs, we were snapping pictures of the barrels behind a glass wall and they offered to open the room so we did not have to take pictures through the glass and so we could get a better view. This was a beautiful winery with amazing wines. It has everything: great service, beautiful tasting room and views and of course incredible wines!

The wine is amazing, but Angie is the best!!! She made our visit so amazing so we got experience delicious wine with awesome customer service! Ask for ANGIE!

Informative and historic

By ocgsm2016 |

We were very lucky to be in the main house for our tasting. 2 years ago the building took some damage from an earthquake and now it is back in full swing. Our tasting guide was Michael who is not only generous and friendly, but he is also well versed in all aspects of wine making with years of experience in the fields and in the winery.
The tasting menus were excellent, both the premium and the reserves. It being my first time at the winery, I don't know if it was very busy or standard operations for Michael to be guiding more than one group at a time. This did not take away from our experience, in fact we enjoyed a little personal time between pours to chat and dish and develop questions for Michael.
The grounds are beautiful! We loved it and will come back next time we're in the area.

Breath taking drive

By Manhattan114 |

I love the drive going into Trefethen. It makes me feel like I am in Tuscany. We often come here 3 season in a year during my time in Cali. Beautiful winery, great white wine, and attentive staff. I always had a lovely experience.

Twilight at Trefethen

By Jorge F |

Simply amazing experience. Private after-hours tour and tasting that is very unique and exclusive. It was one of the most memorable tastings I have ever experienced.

AVery Pleasant Experience

By BDAD59 |

Living in the SF Bay Area, we make frequent visits to Napa Valley. On our last trip there, we wanted to visit some wineries we hadn't been to before. One of those was Trefethen.

It's easy to find; just off Hwy 29 right outside of the city of Napa. A beautiful setting among some really old walnut trees in a huge, barn-like tasting room.

When we were there, Shannon was pouring and she did a great job telling us all about the winery and the Trefethen family. Definitely worth a visit, especially if Shannon is behind the bar.

What an Experience!

By Jason M |

Gary Johnson's the best! I just wanted to send a quick note to thank you for all you, Joe and the family did to make our trip to Trefethen a most memorial experience. Your passion, patience and expertise really set the highest standard for our entire weekend. We enjoyed many other wineries during our weekend in Napa but my family and friends kept going back to their first experience at Trefethen. Your stories and knowledge of the family and the property were amazing. Being in the hospitality business myself you and your team truly went above and beyond my expectations and for that I am grateful. Having Hailey stop by and spend some time with all of us was just the icing on the cake. What a great person. They are very lucky to have someone like you on their team and selling their product. You know it very well and you can tell you enjoy the people that come through even more.

Would skip this winery

By Michelle P |

Mediocre experience at best. Venue was lovely, wines were ok and our host was terrible. There was no conversation or telling us about the history of the vineyard or wines. Literally poured our glasses and walked away. Was very disappointed in the experience.

It’s not worth the money, not a must go!

By Gaa_Gomes |

If I could go back in time, I would go to another tasting experience because Trefethen is not worth the money we spent, first because you can not walk around the place, you have to stay at your table all the times and you can not see the winery (and it’s not because of the pandemic, it’s just because walking around the vineyard is not allowed at all).
Second, the host was friendly, but it did not make our experience magical. We went to Napa to celebrate our first wedding anniversary and they did not make us feel special like we felt at other tastings, like Napa Cellars, Rombauer or Jessup Cellars.
Although they say they are a family vineyard, everything here is about business, they do not make you feel that you are in Napa. It’s sad because this was the tasting that I was more excited to go to.
However, the wines are great, well made and really delicious.
But tasting is much more than that. So, without a doubt, if you are going to Napa, don’t go to Trefethen, go somewhere else, t's not worth the money.

Amazing Napa vineyard

By Seth B |

Five star all around. People, vineyard, grounds and best of all their wine is amazing! Make an appt to get in otherwise your on stand-by and it's very iffy. Be nice and kind and they will take great care of you. Their wines and staff are both amazing. What a vineyard and experience it was. It really doesn't get any better then this! No food! At least not yet. Frankly they don't need it as their wines are unreal.

Fun, rustic style

By Kelly5280 |

Visited on a bike tour...fun, delicious wine, but a bit 'corporate'. If you prefer the small family run vineyards, this may not be the one for you. Even so, the staff were courteous and informative.

Great service, outstanding wine!

By Nancy B |

They were having a special tasting event that was so much fun! There was food available but unfortunately we had just eaten so did not partake. The wines were all quite good and their servers knowledgeable and personable! Yes, I overbought but damn I had a good time!

Great Wine, Atmosphere and Tastings

By Tamara V |

Came here last weekend with friends because of the great reviews and wasn't disappointed. The location is gorgeous and I'm glad we got to see it in the fall when the leaves were all golden in the afternoon light. Tastings are average price for Napa about $30/person but they don't skimp on the amount you get thankfully. Our server, Joe, was awesome and provided us with so much knowledge about the wine we tasted. Would love to come back and am very glad I took a bottle home.

Wine Trip

By Ed D |

Joe was our wine educator and did a great job. They have some of the best wines. We love the reds but they do have whites. The new tasting room is beautiful and the grounds are lovely. Their Dragon's Tooth is one of the best unless you can afford Halo. Great visit.

Absolutely the Best - 2nd to None

By jz0la |

We showed up unannounced not knowing the protocol of Wine Testing ( Appt. Only). Not only were we accommodated immediately - No other winery we visited:
Took the time;
Showed the interest and enthusiasm;
Explained as much in detail;
Genuinely appreciated our visit -
and Treated us as welcome guests as did Angie and the folks at TreFethen.
First class operation.

Newly restored and better than ever

By ianbeavis |

Always a great place to visit even after the earthquake. Now the new facility takes a visit to an entirely new level.

You need to book but it is worth the step for an unique Napa experience.

Their wines are first rate with many flights available. The staff are not the phonies you find elsewhere. These folks are the real deal. Fun, genuine and knowledgable

Pretty Winery,, Want to Return

By Jacquelyn K |

First want to clarify a bit. They JUST opened a new tasting room, in home that had belonged to family. It is lovely, although still a bit disorganized when we visited. However, the old, main building, severely damaged in 2014 earthquake, is still not reopened. It will be eventually, with the converted home then used for reserved tastings and special events only. On to the wines. We found them to be very good, but personally did not think they were extraordinary. Good value for the money, though. Admittedly might have felt differently if staff had taken the time to tell us a bit more about each one we tasted. Also we found that most wineries waived tasting fee if purchase was made, but this one did not. Still enjoyable experience.

California Trip

By Ed D |

This is always a great winery trip even during the virus. We are club members so we really enjoy hearing the latest on the wines. We had a great tasting with a great educator but I have misplaced his info. He took his time and explained each wine and where the grapes are grown.

Family owned Winery

By monighan |

Trefethen has been owned by the same family for years. Sadly, their gorgeous, historic building was badly damaged by the earthquake of 2014, but they are serving tastings of their beautiful wines in the old family home. Do yourself a favor - go!!!

Amazing Family - Amazing Wines!

By Yazdownstairs |

My wife & I recently spent 5 days in Napa Valley and visited many wineries, the best & most memorable visit was to Trefethen! It is a shame that the 2014 Earthquake took such a toll on the main building, but when you walk in the make shift tent/tasting area, oh my goodness...the lights, the water feature, the tables & chairs & decorations, everything is so well put together! You almost forget that you are seated in a tent. Michael took care of us during our tasting and he went through each wine and shared info not only about the wine, but the family, the history, the story, it was such an Awesome experience! My wife and I were celebrating our 1st wedding anniversary and we look forward to going back again and again, we might just make this an annual trip. Thank you Michael and all at Trefethen for such an Amazing experience! Cheers!! 🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷

Favorite stop of our trip!

By KMC620 |

Trefethen was our favorite stop our our 3 days in the area. Kate was our host, and she was absolutely amazing! She had so much knowledge about the history, the wines, and gave us some phenomenal recommendations for the area. The wines were our favorites of the trip and the atmosphere itself gave off early wine country vibes and felt posh and laid back at the same time. Everything you could want!

Trefethen winery should be on your short list of essential Napa Valley wineries to visit.

By TJJones25 |

Trefethen Family Vineyards has a superior line up of wines that should appeal to many different palates, and prices are very reasonable for Napa Valley. It is also easy to reach and has plenty of parking. Shannon, our wine host, provided a great tasting experience thanks to her charm, humor and enthusiasm.

Trefethen has several different tasting options, the Estate Tasting of four wines for $15 and the Winmaker's Reserve Tasting of all five reserve wines for $25. I'd recommend the Reserve Tasting for most serious wine lovers but return again to try the estate tasting because you won't want to miss these either, especially the dry Riesling.

The Trefethen 2011 Dry Riesling is an exceptional Riesling. I like it even better than their 2009 and 2010 when they were first released. It has a light citrus nose with a full, dry presentation on the palate of apple and peach with great minerality and good, but not overwhelming acid. It has a long, delightful finish. This is one of the finest U.S. Rieslings I've tasted. We also tasted two Chards side by side, the 2010 Chardonnay ($30) and the reserve 2009 Harmony Chardonnay ($50). They are both superior Chards in different styles. The 2010 has a light aroma and is dry, citrusy and well balanced with some minerality and a good finish. The reserve has a pronounced aroma with lush apple on the palate. It is a full rich wine, being very smooth but not buttery. It is rounder than the regular release with more apple than citrus. They use 20% malolatic conversion and 11 months of French oak. Both Chards are quite nice and which you prefer will be determined by your personal preferences and what is paired with them. After the Chards we tried the 2011 Viognier ($30). It had a nice floral nose with a smooth fruity presentation that was light and refreshing and a long finish. An unusual white blend, the 2011 Quandry ($25) is Riesling, Chardonnay and Viognier. It has an intense, floral aroma that is utterly delightful and much more pronounced than any of the other whites. I got a lot of fruit, mosly peaches with some citrus. There is more residual sugar, but it is balanced. This is a wine my mother would like, but that I would enjoy sharing with her. It is not as serious a wine as the Chards or Riesling, but more of an easy, fun wine that has more fruit and aroma than even their Viognier. I imagine it is a very popular wine with visitors.

In addition to this strong line up of whites, Trefethen also offers some excellent reds. Most Pinot Noirs from Napa grapes come from Carneros. Trefethen is one of the few wineries I know of that use Valley floor grapes in their Pino. (Hendry is another I can think of.) Their 2010 Pinot Noir ($48) has a light nose with wonderful raspberry like fruit on the palate, with pleasantly interlaced tannins. Fairly bright with light to medium body, I found this to be a very nice Pinot. Next we tried the 2009 Cabernet Franc ($38). This varietal is often found in a Bordeaux style Cabernet Sauvignon blend, but some wineries offer it on its own, and it can sometimes be a very nice wine by itself. In this case it is a blend of 86% Cabernet Franc with 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. This one has a great aroma, with good tannin and fruit. It is one of the better Napa Valley Cab Fancs. Next we tried the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon ($60) and the 2008 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($100). With the former I got a very nice cherry nose with mostly plum on the palate, good balance tannin and acid, and a good finish. It was a nice Cab but the 2008 Reserve was in another league. It was fuller bodied wine with ripe black cherry and spice. Extremely well balanced with an interesting, clean finish. This is an especially good Cab and highly recommended. We finished the tasting with the 2009 Dragon's Tooth ($75), an interesting blend, which is mostly Malbec (67%) with 19% Petit Verdot, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Merlot and the 2006 Halo ($175). The Halo is 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Malbec and is from their Hillspring Vineyard. It sees 28 months in French Oak. The Halo had a remarkable nose, great blackcherry and blackberry like fruit, with deliciously integrated tannins. It is a complex, interesting wine with hints of forest floor, spices and chocolate. This is an exceptional wine that is worth the $175 price tag.

Delicious

Charming vineyard, enjoyed our tasting with Jesus. He knows his wines well. The estate is amazing and fit for private events like weddings

Best winery in Napa

By Caneast8228 |

This is my third trip to Napa in about 8 years. Since my first visit, Trefethen has been my "must come to" place in Napa, partly because all the wine here are just so good, and mostly because I met my wine sensei Shannon, who is now the Tasting Room Supervisor. She has been here for many years. She simply loves what she does and has a bubbly personality, we can feel her passion and enthusiasm, and she is like a good friend sharing her great knowledge of wine and tasting. The first time I came with my sister, after I finished a glass of Riesling, I asked Shannon for a glass of water to rinse my glass before moving to a red. She looked straight into my eyes and pass on to me Shannon Rule No.1 - "you don't rinse your glass with water, because the different pH factor will screw up the palate for the next wine. Waste a little of the second wine to rinse the glass and pour out, then you are set for your next wine." I've passed these wise words on to my drinking friends in Canada. This time, she taught us Shannon Rule No. 2, "when switching to taste a different wine, always take two sips, the first to cleanse the mouth of the taste of the previous wine, and the second sip is to start the tasting." Back to the wine, my favourite wine is German Riesling, and I found Trefethen's Riesling amazingly good. Their Cabs, just wow all the time.
We came last time right after the earthquake. The tasting building was badly damaged. It so good to see the new tasting room looking fantastic.

Our worst winery visit during our trip

By jdog99 |

I think the title says it all. By far the worst visit we had during our last trip. We just did a courtyard tasting but our host seemed disinterested and just reading from a script. Very little information and the wines were not that good. Also the atmosphere leaves quite a bit to be desired.

Tastings by appointment only

By Marie B |

Our limo driver brought us here not knowing they now only do tastings by appt only. They were booked but the host let us try two wines. Even so he wasn't very friendly. We even bought a bottle and they still weren't very friendly. Would not go back.

By Gamyleigh |

This was the first tour that took us into the vineyard....literally. Michael spent a lot of time explaining care of the vines, etc. I loved it! He was in no hurry, and neither were we. After the lengthy tour we sat in a beautiful tasting room at a long table. He gave us an extensive list of wines and said we could have anything we wanted. My husband and I both loved the Pinot Noir. Great tour and experience...thank you!

Trefethen True Fan!!!

By Jacquelyn |

Trefethen Wines have always been my favorite and now having been to Napa twice I have visited the Vineyard both times; the entire venue is breathtaking, the beautiful drive from the road to the winery, the gardens, the tasting courtyard and the the most impressive redwood trees I have ever seen (I thought they only existed in movies). the entire team knows nothing less than exceptional, friendly and knowledgeable service...we had Matt as our Wine Host; he was absolutely amazing and our group was stunned to hear he has only worked there a month! It was my birthday trip this year with my parents and in-laws and Trefethen once again did not disappoint.

Favorite vineyard

By Laura B |

We can’t say enough about this beautiful place, exceptional service by all and great tasting wines! We had toured Napa the day before and made one stop in Sonoma. We are white wine drinkers and did a special white wine tasting with Dan. We did not have reservations and arrived at 10:00. We spent more than a hour with Dan. We bought a case and can’t wait for it to arrive after we get back home. The setting is beautiful and the building is historic. Worth a stop!

Family Trip to Napa

By Chaya S |

Trefethen never disappoints! This is my fourth visit to this amazing vineyard in the past five years and I am always impressed with their knowledge of the wine and with the experience provided.
We did the Reserve Tasting at the Villa, as we were celebrating my son's 21st birthday and wanted it to be a nice experience. Make sure to walk around the grounds, take lots of pictures and ask all the questions, as your expectations will be exceeded.

Best Overall Experience

By Cindy H |

This was our first and by far the best wine tasting on our trip to Napa. No cattle call, standing by the bar while a busy server shuffles you along here!! The atmosphere is stunning and the tasting room is rustic and elegant. Make a reservation to be sure to snag one of the tables or seated areas. My husband and I each tried a different tasting menu, and our server Kate was warm, funny, helpful and genuinely happy to be working there. She even knew what stores we could buy Trefethen wines in our hometown of Austin! We were lucky enough to have tried some special reserves as an added bonus to our tasting, definitely spoiled us and left a strong impression on the rest of our trip. Thank you, Trefethen, for helping to make our 25th-anniversary special!

Historical Family Vineyard with Top Quality Wines and beautiful views

By activetwin |

SHHHHHH..... Let me tell you a story about THE MOST WONDERFUL historic vineyard in California that produces amazing wines. Intrigued? Well, look no further than Trefethen Family Vineyards. An old 1880's 3-story building stands steadfast at the heart of the property beckoning visitors to come try a few of their big and bold reds or soft and smooth whites. Feel like something a little more intimate? Book a tasting at their on premises villa where the Trefethen family grew up. Either way, a visit and tasting is a must and Trefethen has wines for every pallet. I have been a wine club member for over 10 years, but the Trefethen wines were my parent's favorite too, so I grew up knowing exactly what the "shell" is. In addition, most people I bring to Trefethen joins their wine club. So remember your to bring your love of family, love of wine, and ask for ANGIE! She is the best wine educator at Trefethen. Cheers!

Probably the most beautiful that we visited

By aramsay |

I was most impressed with the beauty of this vineyard though the group was most excited about the quality of the wines (I would not be a reliable reviewed but it seemed good). It is located in a bit of a valley and the various structures are beautiful (it was under construction due to earthquake damage). They accommodated our large group of friends and were very attentive.

Cute but the earthquake damaged the main building

By David S |

The wines were fantastic. Unfortunately, the 2014 mag 6 earthquake really messed up the main building and tasting room. It won't be open for some time. The little make shift tasting room was cute.

Well presented selection of red wines............

By GDSPB |

Our host was extremely knowledgeable about the wines presented and very thorough in his explanations. The wines spoke for themselves - superb and well balanced.

Thanks Awesome Angie!

By Scott P |

My husband & I loved wine tasting at Trefethen with Angie. She was fun & very knowledgeable. She’s the queen of pairing wine & food. Great experience!

Amazing experience all around--shout-out to Anthony!

By Jennifer U |

My husband Vincent and I were in Napa for a few days and decided to return to Trefethen for wine tasting--it had been a few years since we visited. While there, our host was Anthony, and he was really fun and super-knowlegable about wine, the vineyards and the different grapes grown in each. The whole experience was relaxed and fun, and although we have tasted wine many times in many California wineries from Paso Robles to the Russian River, to Mendocino, to napa--this visit really stands out for us. If you are looking for a really beautiful place to taste wine in a relaxed, approachable, and fun place, ask for Anthony at Trefethen.

Favorite vineyard we visited

By Jay D |

Family owned and a really cool atmosphere. There’s a set tasting menu you order from and pay for before you head upstairs to the tasting room which is huge. They had about 3 or 4 tastings to choose from and then also said they can do an all white tasting which wasn’t on the menu. Every wine we tried was better than the next! Shannon helped us and she was awesome as well. Very friendly and personable. We ended up buying 2 bottles and they have a website we’ll be ordering from as well. Wonderful place, and only about $25 per person for a tasting of 5 wines.

Cool place!!

By Kathy J |

The wines were really good, the hosts were very friendly and the atmosphere was very trendy and fun. Lots of cool people at the winery.

Great family tasting spot

By gillyd123 |

Our first tasting in Napa. Was excellent! We were able to walk-in and enjoy tasting. Would recommend this to anyone! Great story and history.

Taste the Estate

By mamacherryo |

Beautiful family owned property. It’s evident they care about their legacy and strive to maintain excellence. We did the Taste the Estate experience. We tasted 5 wines along with 5 small bites. The setting was gorgeous. We’d definitely return.

Tremendous Trefethen

By okiekathryn |

Trefethen is a gorgeous winery located on the valley floor, tucked within its vineyards. The historical estate has beautiful buildings including the former family home, where we sat. Our Taste the Estate tour comprised fabulous wine paired with estate-grown ingredients. The chef obviously knew how to expertly feature the wines with each accompanying food plate. I appreciated the sous chef introducing each course, describing how it highlighted the wine. You cannot get fresher, more perfect synergy!
Our wine expert, Hunter, guided us through each wine. He was highly knowledgeable and a lot of fun. Hunter instinctively knew how to tailor our experience for our personal tastes.
We'll definitely be back!

Great Wine Tasting Spot

By K8Ciara |

Trefethen was recommended to us by several friends who had been there before. It is such a nice family run vineyard, with a beautiful wine tasting location. And is such a nice break from the big and overwhelming vineyards throughout the Napa Valley. Our server who led us in the wine tasting was very knowledgeable, and knew exactly what to recommend we try next.

A little disappointed

By Mark F |

This was our last stop before leaving the valley. We enjoyed the winery but we were exposed to a lot of the production wines (even with the "ultra awesome" taster (<---that wasn't what it was called - you know what I'm talking about). No HaLo or anything special was offered. Wines were good but not great. They are still hanging on to the "near perfect" rating given a while back to one of their cab sauvs. I would go back to experience it again as the servers were pleasant and the wine was very decent. Cork tree in front of vineyard is pretty cool.

Great setting and wide range

By Marco N |

A lovely drive through the vineyard makes you reach the elegant tasting room. Prizes are steep, but we did get a lot in return. With three we split two classic tastings and as people in the wine trade we did get extra information plus some tastes of the more premium wines. Nevertheless Trefethen has a solid range and is a go to cellar door when in Napa!

WE HAD A WONDERFUL TIME.. LOVED THE WINES AND MICHAEL WAS FANTASTIC!

By ardythb |

We had 8 in our group.. out to celebrate a birthday. We Iive in Sonoma Valley and know our wines and wineries. The second we walked into the tent we knew we had found the right place for our gathering. We felt welcomed. MICHAEL made our tasting experience a true delight. He was knowledgeable and fun and funny. He fit right in! Our favorites were the Quandary and The Cab. Looking forward to a lingering brunch together drinking some chilled Quandary for another one of our birthdays this summer!

Extra Thanks Michael!! You're a gem!

Always a treat!

By Lori F |

A friend of mine is a member so I've been a handful of times. This time we splurged for the Reserve Tasting and not only was it all amazing, we had Angie for a second time and she remembered my likes and dislikes! (I'm fairly new to the wonderful world of wine, and still figuring it out!) We had a large party celebrating a friends birthday and she made us feel special and was sooo informative not only about wine, but the winery and surrounding area.

I can't wait to go again and even considering becoming a member myself!

Thanks Angie and Thefethen for amazing and wonderful experiences and not making me feel like a total newbie!

Fun wine tasting with Shannon

By paristosydney |

Great experience, lovely wines & breadsticks. Shannon was lively and provided us with some great info and advice. Bought a few wines here and would definitely come back. We didn't need to book but I think we were lucky as Napa was very quiet as it was 3 July, I think maybe everyone was away for the holiday.

We have enjoyed visiting the winery for the last 20 years but won't be going back.

In the past we have had great experiences with Trefethen, they were down to earth, and friendly but not so any longer.

Upon going in from the parking lot they have a sign saying that there may be a wait if you do not have reservations, but we were able to pay the $25/$35 dollar tasting fees for 5 wines (with no additional pours) at the reception desk, and get a seat at one of the two bars upstairs. Their wines are priced on the high side for the quality, and their Pinot Noir was light for our taste, especially compared to Pinots from the Russian River, and most of their wines had a short finish.

The grounds and tasting room upstairs are open and nice but can get a bit loud. The experience was what one would expect of a Napa winery. They have all gotten so stodgy and pretentious over the past 20 years, and Trefethen was one of the last down to earth ones we enjoyed until today. We were considering joining the wine club until the server indicated that the tasting fees we had already paid could not be applied to the club membership.

On top of that there was an open bottle of Halo in the tasting rack that was in front of us, and when I asked for a taste, was refused with the server saying they don't open that for tastings. When I pointed out the bottle right in front of us, he said that another party had purchased and drank it and there was none left. Then why have an empty bottle in the rack? It just doesn't make any sense other than he just didn't feel like pouring it for us.

As others mention children are not allowed on the grounds, but dogs are, there were 2 parties that had their dogs in the facility, behaving badly.

We visit all of the different wine areas from Napa, Dry Creak, Sonoma, Healdsburg, Silverado Trail, and the Russian River to Paso Robles, and Ojai, but our friend and family won't be visiting Trefethen any longer when we go to Napa.

Excellent whites!

By Alison F |

You typically need an appointment for this winery, but we called from the parking lot and were able to go in for a tasting. Staff was very nice and helpful. They are most known for their white wines, which were all great, but the cab on the list was really good as well. Their current tasting room is a temporary space due to damage sustained during the earthquake, but still inviting and nice. We joined the club for this one, can't get the whites in TX where we live. Also one of the only wineries with nice hearty bread sticks to help transition from one wine to the next.

Very Accommodating

By Snoopydog01 |

We are wine club members but showed up without a reservation at a time when the tasting room was very busy. They were great at accommodating us. Their staff are really nice. Their wines are fabulous. They are currently in temporary tasting space as their original space was damaged in the earthquake 2 years ago and they are rebuilding.

By IvyRain22 |

We got the reserve flight and there were a few good varietals. Their tasting room was under construction so we were in a very nice tent. We tasted their reserve 2010, 2011 and 2012 Cabs. The 2011 was very good, a little mossy on the finish.

Great wine

By TripPhotographer52 |

This was another higher end winery we visited on our first day in Napa and it did not disappoint. They were nice and good in explaining their winery and the different grapes, etc. I highly recommend it.

Wonderful wine-tasting experience

By Rosana Valencia |

The grounds are beautiful with the zen like water installation outside lush greenery and inside the rustic dark woods and warm ambiance. The wine tasting experience was the best I've had with superb wines starting from a sampling of white wine to a tasting of all of Trefethen's excellent reserve reds. The desert wine tasting in the end was a special treat. A truly great experience especially if enjoyed with friends. My friends and I also happened to visit during harvest season and bunches of ripe grapes hung from rows of vines ....not an everyday sight to behold! I would absolutely go back and am planning to.

Incredible experience, Reserve Tasting a must-try!

By Bianca |

Our visit to Trefethen was an absolute treat! My friend and I visited the property during Napa's COVID-19 "re-open phase" in early June. The staff at Trefethen adapted to the many, and necessary, precautions due to COVID-19 very well. Their protocols were very clear and much appreciated. I booked the Reserve Tasting in the garden, as opposed to the Estate Tasting in the patio near the main entrance, a modest upgrade for a major treat! Patty helped me book my reservation and described the Estate Tasting as a great experience not to be rushed, therefore, we booked this as our first visit of the day. We sure did enjoy the tasting, we stayed for a little over 1.5 hours and enjoyed the experience tremendously. Our host, Salana, was very kind, cheerful, and knowledgable. She took great care of us and educated a lot about our flight. Salana was also kind enough to bring the chef that prepared our charcuterie board out to tell us about the included items. The food was so savory, incredible flavor, highly recommend trying a charcuterie board for any new visitors. We loved this property, we will be back again. Cheers!

Great ambience!

By BoomSong |

We had a wonderful time at Trefethen. Our host, Scott Dale, was excellent. We prefer white wines, but the reds here were lovely as well.

Trefethen....terrific experience

By Traveler33418 |

One of the best wine tasting experiences available in Napa Valley. Great location; great ambiance; great host (Nick!); great value ($45 and wound up tasting 8 wines); and somewhat unique with side by side tasting offered by our host. Nick was more than knowledgeable; his past hands-on experience, including international stints, greatly added to the Trefethen afternoon. Highly recommended.

Gracious people when we had no reservation

By E4468HCjerryb |

We have loved these wines for many years, but had never been to their tasting room before. We were in the area and chanced to stop by even though we had no reservation. The main building was damaged by the earthquake, and the tasting room is in a tent, which has been made very comfortable. The room was very crowded, and they were unable to give us an entire tasting. However, they allowed us to taste two of their most popular wines without charging us, a very nice gesture. We will return again, but this time with a reservation.

Napa Gem

By Adin82much |

We were recently invited to visit Trefethen for the first time. Friends of ours have been wine club members for a few years and have always spoken very highly of both the wines and the atmosphere.

Our visit was both charming and memorable. Jennifre (I am guessing at the spelling) was our host and did a fabulous job presenting and pouring the wines. She was hospitable, kind, friendly, and very informative. I believe she also went off script quite a few times and provided us wines that weren't intended to be in the lineup.

Due to earthquake-related damage that the estate suffered in 2014, the main building was closed. We were relegated to a tent for our tasting but the accommodations were still very comfortable.

The Estate is family-owned and operated. If memory serves me correctly, Mama and Papa Trefethen purchased many of the original estate acres back in the 1960's. I mention this because the environment appears to be collegial and "family-like" amongst the staff. And the atmosphere within the tasting area is very warm and comfortable and you are treated as a friend, not a guest.

The wines were very good and the experience was even better. Trefethen Family Vineyards is truly a gem in Napa.

Fun!

By 702shelbym |

A fun experience with some great summer wines! Shannon was great and really made the experience special for us! Great story about the vineyard recovering from the August 2014 earthquake as well

Wonderful Venue and Wine

By B G |

We have been members of Trefethen for decades. We first visited Trefethen on a whim in December of 1990 and were treated to a very personal and educational tasting experience by Debbie. That was when we first fell in love with the Trefethen reds. We live in Florida but travel to San Francisco annually. Although we have visited dozens of other wineries in both Napa and Sonoma, and have been members of others, Trefethen remains our first and best love.

We are in San Francisco for the month of June and have visited Trefethen three times to make up lost time due to the pandemic. The historic indoor tasting room is open but you must make a reservation. For each visit we have been greeted by the friendly staff and treated to their wonderful wines.

What’s to like:

Personal and affordable wine tasting even for non members,

wonderful historic tasting room,

friendly and knowledgeable staff,

lovely vineyard clad entrance from the road to the building,

located relatively close in the beautiful Oak Knoll district,

and most of all the wines — especially the Cab and Cab-based blends.

Highly recommend this charming family-owned winery.

Fantastic Place

By kjcooper01 |

Recently went to Trefethen winery and enjoyed a sit down wine tasting. The grounds are beautiful and the the historic winery building is spectacular post renovation. The wine was awesome and the staff were very friendly and attentive. Would definitely go again!

Classic winery

By Nancy D |

Beautiful drive through the vineyard as you approach the tasting rooms. Be prepared for 5 generous tastings and to learn the history of the winery. A notable list of medals and lovely wines makes this winery one you will want to leave with some souvenir bottles. I took the Dragon's Foot for my birthday. celebration. On a sunny day dogs are welcomed on the deck.

Tasting and tour

By Carrie B |

Had a wonderful tour at Trefethen winery in January 2017. I would recommend this beautiful, family owned winery to anyone. They were hit hard from the earthquake and are still fixing up the old building. But the house was made into a fantastic tasting area and I recommend trying several of their wines.

Mother/Daughter Trip to Napa

By Toni A |

I loved this winery, it was absolutely beautiful, the wine, yum! I joined the wine club after tasting the Reisling.

Great wine and beautiful winery -ignore the critical reviews

By Karma |

After reading some of the reviews, we almost skipped this winery- so glad we didn't . Yes, you need to pay for tastings as you enter, but when we joined the wine club and made purchases, they pretty much evened things out. We received a joining discount and then a coupon discount.
All of this would have been inconsequential if the wine hadn't been incredible! I usually favor reds, but the Riesling was incredible, and very reasonably priced. The dessert wine, a limited Reisling, was the best dessert wine I've ever had, and I don't like dessert wines. The 2009 Reserve Cab, (expensive) was heaven! The pourer was Shannon, (I think) who was fun, helpful , and set the relaxed tone for the tasting room. In addition -Dog friendly! Also- don't shy away from the 'reservation only' wineries. We discovered this is a result of a misguided local ordinance. (You can call from the parking lot). Last tip- Southwest Airlines baggage is free. Many wineries sell great heavy cardboard padded wine shipping boxes that carry a dozen bottles. I have used mine several times, and nary a bottle has been damaged.

Huge Wine Tasting Room

By ARose |

This place can accommodate crowds well. We came late on a Saturday, maybe an hour before closing, and were afraid that it would be a lost cause. They have a very spacious wine tasting room and cater the tasting experience nearly one to one per each couple/group. The staff was all very friendly.

Wait until the tasting room opens back up

By JMG836 |

The temporary tasting room is a glorified tent. The service was very inattentive and there is no ambiance. We had a card for 4 free tastings and they told us they would not honor it since the person who gave us the card no longer worked there….even though there was no expiration. The will only comp a tasting if you buy a case of wine (Napa standard is 1-2 bottles for comped tasting). I say wait until the tasting room is opened back up.

Magical

By KarenBluestone |

Thank you to TripAdvisor contributors for steering us toward this magical place! My friend and I visited as part of her 50th birthday extravaganza. The vineyard is beautiful and the inside of the building visually stunning. Michael made us comfortable and brought us amazing wines to taste. Trefethen left a very happy imprint in our minds.

Nice outdoor experience

By Adventurer284163 |

Impressive property. Perfect day to sit outside in the garden and try the wines. Good service. Wines were decent but not the favorites of this trip.

worth a visit

By dubbs605 |

beautiful grounds, terrific wines, helpful staff - worth a visit

Amazing!

By ArkieFoodie |

Trefethen was heavily damaged in the 2015 earthquake and had to close their tasting room. So the family moved out of their beautiful craftsman-style estate home and turned it over for the tastings. It was utterly delightful to sit in their living room in front of the fireplace, looking out on the patio ad swimming pool. The new tasting room should be opening soon, and, unfortunately for the public, the home will be used only for wine club members and special events. The wines were EXCELLENT! The tasting fee is $25 for the classic tasting and $35 for the reserve tasting. I think we had several of both, and our fee was waived with a purchase of a $75 merlot. Reservations are required for this tasting, but I'm not sure if that will be the case when the new tasting room opens.

Great service

By maduarte |

Excellent dessert wines, reasonable prices, and friendly servers make for a nice quick stop! Close to Downtown Napa.

One the best Chardonnays in the valley

By NaSoMaCa |

Trefethen is one of the first wineries you hit on the main drag of Highway 29. The tasting room staff were friendly and handled the crowd at the winery well. Interesting decor inside the winery. The thing to me that set them apart from other wineries was their amazing Harmony Chard. This wine is made the way that I like Chardonnays. Perfect amount of oak with great balance.

Personal Tasting fit for a Queen!

By Lori S |

Trefethen was near our hotel and recommended by our hotel manager. We arrived about an hour before closing and we were treated like Royalty! We had an amazing tasting! Our Pourer was very knowledgeable and answered all of my questions about wine making and grape harvesting. He went above and beyond and brought fresh grapes out for us even in November! They had some nice merchandise for purchase as well as a nice variety of wines to buy. There was no pressure to join the club. We really enjoyed our visit to Trefethen Vineyards!

Wow what a place

By Michael O |

Trefethen was on our tour today and this place was great. The gardens we're beautiful and newly rebuild building. The wines were some of the best in Napa. Both whites and red we're worth buying.

Great wines

By worldfoodie64 |

We have been to Trefethen many times and the wines are always excellent and the staff friendly and helpful.

trefethen family vineyards... another "don't miss" in my book!

By RobertInExile |

to visit trefethen family vineyards is to almost feel like a part of the napa valley culture, the trefethen family being one of the important and historically grounded families in the area. with so many vineyards open for tastings, it's great to arrive someplace so beautiful and significant to the wine industry and be treated warmly in a non-commercial sort of way, almost like a part of the napa valley family. the people at trefethen are just great... charming, and willing to not just educate, but also to help you ENJOY the wonderful product of their vines. i concur with others here that the pours are generous (but not excessive), and definitely reserve ahead for one of their upper echelon tastings (as we did on our visit).

Great staff and wonderful wines

By ntd19 |

We stopped here on a whim and were wonderfully surprised at how friendly the staff was and how terrific the wines were. This is not a big winery but had a well thought out tasting room and a well informed and friendly staff. Worth the time an money. I would go back again.

Personal and Private

By Toya1982 |

We visited Trefethen in April of 2016 with 3 friends. We stumbled upon it by accident trying to get to another winery. Mike (our host for the day) let us stay even though we did not have a reservation. He was an excellent and friendly host and made the tour feel very personal (unlike the other vineyards we visited).

Great Place!!

By Melissa L |

We visited Trefethen as a family of four and did the wine tasting in the Villa with Gary! It was so personal and fun...Gary even took the time to walk us around the garden after we tasted the most amazing wine!

Awesome place

By Fred M |

The private (club member) tasting was fantastic. The setting as well as the wine was awesome.
There’s a great story to the winery and it’s owners dedication to fabulous wine.
It’s a not miss in my book

Good experience

By Rebecca Barnett D |

Pretty facility; some of the better white wines we tasted. They do not waive tasting fees with a wine purchase.

Lovely experience

By NancyG |

Really interesting wines and fabulous ambience in the winery.

Great tasting!

By travelbug4747 |

This was our second visit here and one of our favorites! Our host was very nice and even offered us a tasting of Halo! They have a cork tree by the entry. Very nice.

Very good wines, fun tasting

By BN712 |

I only did a tasting at Trefethen. (The tour didn't fit into our itinerary.) The wines were great and the staff were very friendly and fun, not too serious. The only down side is that the tasting fee is not waived with a minimum purchase. While this isn't a big deal, I appreciate wineries who waive the fee.

By liday |

Go for the pinot grigios alone! The winery is spectacular and a beautiful place to visit, especially on warm, sunny days.

Ohhhh chocolate port...

By bhkeller2001 |

We made a quick stop here as the last one of the day.... Loved the grounds and the staff was friendly and funny and knowledgeable. Loved the chocolate port- so yummy!

Tour and tasting....and what a tasting!

By Sue B |

We had a very enjoyable few hours on this impressive and historic site and greatly enjoyed the winery tour plus the wines themselves. My favourite?....the dark, woody 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon, but the 2009 shows lots of promise!

So in LOVE with this Place!

By Yeleny S |

Trefethen on one of nine wineries we visited while on our Napa Valley trip and it was one of our favorites. We most likely wouldn't have visited this establishment but our tour guide James from Flex Wine Tours booked us a tasting here and we were so thankful he did. The vibe was so relaxing yet so enchanting. The day was gorgeous so we were able to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful backdoor area. The wines were extremely delicious and our server, Jennifer, was so pleasant. We ended up purchasing a bottle of wine each. This place is not to be skipped!

Beautiful Venue

By Matt |

My wife and I went here for a late afternoon tasting. We really enjoyed this place as it has a very old world Spanish feel to it. The gardens are stunning, and if you book ahead of time, and can do your tasting in the family home, it is well worth it. This venue have a 90 year old sequoia tree, beautiful flowering gardens, a well rounded veggie garden, beautiful fountains, and birds that are constantly chirping/singing. My wife and I did the cheese and wine tasting, but I know this venue also has a garden meal & tasting, which from looking around at our fellow wine goers, also looked very tasty. Great Experience, especially if you are an outdoor lover.

Well worth a visit

By zandc |

There are so many wineries to choose from, so glad we had recommendations from friends. Initally it says reservations recommened (but most wineries say this). However we had no problem without one. We did one tasting between the two of us as there was one driver and we had others to visit. What a wonderful building. Inside was full of character. Staff were friendly and informative. All wines tasted were excellent.

Another great visit

By Brian E |

The new tasting room is open after the earthquake destroyed the old one. It is being restored but it seems to be in bad shape.

The new tasting room is in the old residence of the Grandmother. Reservations are required but the tasting is great. I am a member so I am biased.

By Sarah H |

I had a absolutely wonderful time here. The wine was delightful and the setting was simply wonderful. Shannon took amazing care of myself and the friends I was with. I wish I could have sat and enjoyed their wine and view all day.

I highly highly recommend this Winey for:
Amazing customer service and friendly staff
Wonderful wine
Comfortable and adorable setting (even in their temporary tent due to the Napa earthquake)
Gorgeous property

Please go here.

great & tasty

By Anthony W |

I still believe that Trefethen is one of the better wineries in Napa. They have great (reserve) wines and a very inviting environment. Make sure you take your time once you are there to taste their top wines!

Beautiful Estate, Fun Atmosphere

By poukala |

This was a really fun stop on our wine tour. You pull in and have a long driveway into the estate. They were decorated everywhere for Halloween which was really cute. We all did the basic wine tasting, which all of them were excellent!

Wow just Wow

By Capo |

What a great experience. The wine was amazing, our host Michael was awesome. His wine and winery knowledge was top notch. Seriously a must visit in Napa. We will return. Many times. Thank you Trefethen. Well done.

Very Nice

By Jeffrey R |

This was our first stop on the way from half Moon Bay to Napa Valley. When you arrive at the winery due to the earthquake last year the old beautiful tasting room is under repair. The tastings are held in a very elegant outdoor facility that you would never know is a tent. Arlyne hostess Angie was an outstanding individual! She made us feel as if we were part of the family I highly recommend the upgraded tasting. Well worth your time in a few dollars

So far the only winery we've gone back to...

By Gail_USA |

Pros:
-Really good red wine - in particular their Cabernets are really good
-Reasonably priced tastings - either $15 (4 wines - choose from about 8) or $25 (5 wines with some of their reserve wines)
-Very friendly and approachable staff who make the tasting fun, not stuffy, and who will answer any questions you have
-Nice indoor space - more "wine lounge" than "tasting room"

Cons:
-Right now they don't have as nice of outdoor space, but they're in the process of renovating, so I imagine by the end of summer it will be more of a pro than con (but right now other wineries have more outdoor ambience for tasting)
-It's not much of a con, but they don't do "table service" for the tasting - you have a glass and get served by going up to the bar

We were recommended to Trefethen a few years ago, and it was the only winery we went back to for this trip. I think our pallets have evolved over the years, so was wondering if we'd still think their reds were good, and sure enough, they were. Right now they are our top contender for a wine club (they have three options, one of which is concentrated on reds). (Also, we haven't done the tour, so I can't comment on that).

Good Mid Range Vineyard

By Rosalie S |

This was the last vineyard we visited, so unfortunately, others shined brighter. The service was very good and we did buy a number of bottles of the dry riesling, but none of the red, since we bought a bunch through other vineyards. There were breadsticks, but no other snacks.

OK, that's it

By B B |

Not a lot to say...tasty wine, but horrible attitudes. I'm sorry, there is so much great grape juice in Napa that we will not be giving this place any more chances. Just not worth it.

Nice Wine & Nice People

By MrBoydPurser |

The Trefethen's care about their wine and care about the people who visit, maybe this is why they are one of the oldest family vineyards in Napa. The place is amazing but you will need to make an appointment.
One word of caution - this is a classic winery so not a family visit place.

Excellent day we had

By di z |

The vineyard is lovely and the wines we tasted are excellent. The staff is very knowledgeable. They have lime trees in the yard! That was a wonderful day. Thanks, good people. I still have the wine list they gave us for the tasting that day (Im suck a dork).

Napa Trip

By Ed D |

As usual this was a great visit. The place is beautiful. The people in the tasting room know things of interest. Their wine is very nice including all the reds. The wine is very affordable.

nice place, very good wines

By randy7496 |

we did a tour ant tasting at the Villa and most of their wines were really good and the host did a good job.

Friends First Time

By Mike S |

We have visited Trefethen for about 12 years now ... not consecutively ... but over the past 12 years. Each and every time, our experience has been unbelievable. We are now HaLo club members and enjoy the benefits that come along with that but highly recommend a visit at any level. If you are able to book the Cottage ... do so. A very intimate atmosphere with lots of history. If not, the tasting room still has lots to offer and the wines make any level worth it.

Our favorite

By App_guy2014 |

We popped in with no reservation but they set us up right away with a tasting. The ambiance was wonderful, the wine was good and the service was excellent. Trefethen is a small family run operation compared to many of the corporate run wineries and it made the experience feel very personal. They waived the tasting fee since we bought a couple of bottles which was a nice touch. This was by far our favorite of the 5 wineries at which we stopped.

A Definite

By DebMRoswell_GA |

We had been here 15 years earlier..... while it has grown, the service, wine and friendliness remains excellent. We were one of the first couples to taste in the morning and loved our server. She was very knowledgeable and kind. Loved the wine as well and bought a great picnic bottle for our picnic that day.

Trefethen

By NapaWines |

Beautiful grounds and upscale tasting room, yet friendly and down-to-earth staff. The wines are wonderful. Bring a lunch and relax on the patio.

Warm and welcoming

By Mufflepuff |

I picked this vineyard based on the reviews and it was a lovely experience! The property is gorgeous and the tasting room has a rustic feel to it. They were so kind to let us switch out wines between the tasting menus so we could try the ones we wanted. They’ve also got wines they only sell onsite so it’s very unique.
The people were kind and we really enjoyed this experience.

Unexpected stop!

By Rachael F |

We were on way up to Calistoga and saw Trefethen right on the side of the rode, what a great stop! It said appointment needed however, walk-ins were allowed if available so we were happy to be able to get in without an appointment. The staff were really knowledgeable in their wines and explain the history and the land of the wine. We had the reserve tasting it was delicious!! We walked away pleased with our stop and a bottle of our favorite wine from there!!

Come for the wine

By JB101 |

As you've seen, Trefethen (could you pick a harder name to spell/write?) suffered damage in the earthquake, so they are serving wine in a very nice tent now. That's fine. The ambiance is actually just fine inside and the wines are great. It was busy, so not the most informative pours, but still, a good opportuinity to taste and enjoy. Absolutely worth a trip.

Always a great experience!

By Lynda W |

Please don't miss a visit to Trefethen if you're wine tasting in Napa! From the wines, to the amazing staff, to the property itself, it's the entire package! I don't usually go to the same winery more than once (so many to choose from), but I've been 3 times and plan to go back every time I'm out there. They really make your visit memorable.

Join the club!

By Sully38 |

They are undergoing reconstruction after the 2015 earthquake but have set up a lovely tasting room. George was skillful and showed us some photos in a view master of the damage to main the building. The wines were fabulous and we joined the club. We also bought a bottle for a byob dinner in St. Helena.

Wonderful wines

By WrigleyGirl90 |

We visited here for the first time. Their temporary tasting room was great. We had Adam for our appointment. We loved the wines, especially the reds. We bought a few bottles to take with us and joined their wine club. One disappointing experience was the tasting fees were not waived even with us asking and joining their wine club. Since we are from Tampa, complimentary future tastings are really not beneficial to us. This really left a sour taste in our our mouths.

Outstanding Wine Tasting

By nb00n |

Trefethen has a beautiful tasting room with individual tables and a fantastic view. As there were 3 in our party, we each chose a different tasting menu and tried one another’s wines. Our server brought wines ranging from whites to reds to dessert wines, holding back my reds until we had tasted all of the whites. The server was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. He brought out a couple of additional wines which weren’t on the tasting menu once our taste preferences had become clear.
The wines were delicious and the experience was highly enjoyable. On this trip to Napa, we visited 8 different wineries. Trefethen was one of the best.

Enjoyable Visit

By matt5mn |

I'll be honest in that I am not a wine snob but more of a beer geek. Either way, I was doing some research in finding a god place near Napa that had good reviews of white wines as my wife prefers this over reds. Trefethen seemed to have good reviews, so I decided that this would best fit the bill. I will say to be mindful in that if you use google maps to getting directions, it is not up to speed and you will see the Trefethen sign across the road. Follow that. Ok, first, beautiful grounds. Felt as though we were driving into a nice estate that was hidden from the hustle and bustle. We checked in and were gudied upstairs to their newly renovated tasting room. To my cold weather friends, you will want to still bring a jacket as it can get a little chilly. My wife had white wine while I tried a combination of their more typical samples. The wines were very good and yes, I ended up spending some money to have some shipped home. What made the experience enjoyable was our host, George. Very passionate about the vineyard and answered all of our questions. MY wife and I walked away from there was a new found sense of appreciation.

Great time tasting!

By Bucknsac |

Just finished tasting at Trefethen Family Vineyards and had an amazing time! We did the "Reserve Tasting at The Villa" and are glad we did.

The wine was great, the charcuterie was great and our guide Carrysa was great! We really enjoyed each of the wines and had to bring many of them home with us.

We highly recommend Trefethen for not only the wine but also the experience.

Just nice

By JohnnysGoodLifeTips |

We took the reserve tasting
The reserve cabaret 2012 was delicious
Remaining wins were ok
Service was ok
The guy mention every time we can't the wine where we live , we got it first time ...

Favorite stop of the day

By Linda M |

This was our first stop during our napa tour and my favorite of the day! We were seated at a long table in a beautiful tented area and served wine by a very gracious and knowledgeable host. The wine was great and the atmosphere was beautiful! A wonderful experience!!

Great wine but average tasting experience

By eyelanddoc |

Trefethen was our first stop on our tour of California's wine country. We had high expectations because we've enjoyed their wines (and still do). The grounds were gorgeous - loved the entrance and long drive to the tasting room. The wines were lovely as usual. The only down side was the guy pouring our wine. He was informative, pleasant, but he didn't seem all that into what he was doing. I would give Trefethen another try in the future.

Wine tasting

By laflacour |

Excellent- Dragon's Tooth reserve was especially good. It was our favorite wine tasting tour. Our sommelier was fabulous. Their Riesling, Pinot Noir, Malbec and 2015 Cabernet Franc were also very good.

no pretention - great experience

By PDblue |

My BFF and I visited Trefethen after tasting their Reisling at Bottega in Yountville. we were looking for whites in a sea of reds :) Little did we know that this would be our favourite winery in Napa! The grounds were beautiful and the tasting room was all decked out for the upcoming halloween party. So fun! props to Kate, our tasting hostess with the mostest! She was super down to earth, fun, generous pourer as well. She had good stories of the winery, the history and the family - all with no pretention like many others we visited throughout the valley. Loved this winery and were thrilled to see that we could get some of their wines back home in Toronto.

Highly recommend - and ask for Kate!

A Napa Don’t Miss

We did an upgraded tasting with food on their porch. It was gorgeous and relaxing, and we love their wines - we are members of their wine club, which I also recommend!

Our favorite winery!

My husband and I did six private winery tours in Napa over two days at the beginning of our California vacation.

We let our tour guides select all but one, Trefethen, which was recommended by a family member who lived in San Francisco for over 20 years.

Our experience at Trefethen was exceptional. They were quite busy on the Saturday in December due to a special event, but all were kind and pleasant. We were fortunate to be paired with Michael who has obvious expertise, an exceptional perspective and knowledge. We started in the vineyards and talked through what makes a good wine, best conditions for the grapes, harvesting, processing, testing, bottling, and so on. Michael was very patient with all of our questions and curiosities.

We have been on wine tours before, in many geographies, but I learned so much in the time with Michael. He was also very patient as we tried wines, and very helpful in exploring our taste preferences.

The quality and breadth of the Trefethen wines is exceptional and the care they put into every wine is impressive. Fantastic wines. Fantastic experience.

Thank you to Michael and the team,

The renovated barn is very intriguing, interesting and painstakingly done! Great atmosphere and lots of room.

Cool atmosphere!

We enjoyed the wine tasting which was our first stop on the Wine Limo tour. Nice staff and excellent wine (try Quandary!)

Pretty Setting, Good Wines

By Blueslady442 |

The wines here were pretty good, but the "tasting" experience was sub-par (quite busy, and little description of what you were tasting was provided). The scenery is certainly beautiful, however, so that in and of itself is worth the visit.

Such a lovely winery

By londonbound-7 |

Four of us went to Trefethen on 9/21/2019 and had the nicest time tasting their wines. Sally took such good care of us and was so generous with information on the winery. The tasting room is the prettiest I have been in; comfortable, large but cozy, you want to stay the day. The tasting is very well priced. We went home with some wine and look forward to returning someday. Thank you again, Sally!

Great time with great wines

By trevelyon |

Showed up with two friends and no reservation. The lady at the front was kind and arranged for a tasting for us. We opted for the reserve tasting which was 45 bucks. Enrique was our attendant and he was great. Wines were good, bought a few bottles and Enrique recommended some other wineries that turned out to be hits also. Will go back with friends again. The Chardonnay was great. Grounds are beautful as well.

This is the one!

After coming from silver oak, which was really high-dollar and had nowhere to sit, it was a relief to come to trefethen. Our host Katie was knowledgeable and hilarious. The ambiance was so comfortable and laid-back. My girlfriend sat on big comfy chairs, drank wine, and hung out for a couple of hours. They even let us stay a little past close. I would highly recommend coming here.

Loved this place

By JRC24 |

My wife and I really enjoyed the Trefethen winery. The staff and the wine tasting was very good. Their wines are moderately priced, so you won't break the bank buying from them.

Experience varies depending upon staff

By Jolene U |

On a recent trip to Napa and Sonoma Valley, this was our least favorite winery stop of 12 locations. We arrived one hour before closing. My friend mentioned right off that she had never been to a winery in Napa before and the host did nothing to explain things or help her learn anything. He was just trying to sell us some wine after we already paid for the most expensive tasting offering. When he found out we were from the east coast, the look on his face was "these people are not going to buy anything, how can I get them to move on." I also wanted the tasting to be quickly over to move on to a more hospitable winery. Some other folks at the bar were clearly having a better time with their host. So be careful "selecting" your host.

The Welsh can make wine... who knew?

By gerrymac32 |

Nice first stop on a personal guided tour, friendly (almost over friendly) service (well it was her Birthday) - nice tastes and were happy to kick off here. We didn't purchase any wines (it was 11am) maybe too early... good quality wines!

Looks good! Tastes better!

By Serra62 |

I am the photographer. My husband the wine taster. I asked our guide to recommend scenic and delicious wineries to visit. That is how we ended up at this rustic, family owned vinyard. The cost of the sampling is very reasonable and we were able to select a bottle of our favorite to bring home. We were well satisfied with our trip to Trefethen.

Love their wine, wait to visit until repairs are finished.

By campydave41 |

We have visited Trefethen twice, once in 2013 and again this fall (2015), as it is a favourite wine of ours. Because of earthquake damage to their main building in 2014, it is closed for repair and this has affected the experience there quite dramatically. Tasting now takes place in a tent on the grounds. Wine for us is a complete sensory experience that goes beyond simply the taste, it is also about the atmosphere and quite frankly, the tent just doesn't cut it. I'm sure that the damage from the earthquake has put a financial strain on the family run winery, however, I feel they should re-evaluate their current tasting experience. Why not set something up in another building such as the barrel room or look to re-purpose some other space to provide a better experience? We will look forward to our next visit to Napa and to once again visiting their historic building but until then, would recommend a pass from their current tasting set up.

Nothing special

By Nicole M |

I came here as it came recommended from some people. I was not impressed. Their wine was average in my view and the girls pouring the wine were more interested in gossiping about their roommates than the patrons they were serving.

Can’t go wrong

By Hank B |

WONDERFUL wines and excellent service! Enjoyed our visit and the wines last year so much we joined their wine club. Went back this week and were treated like family! Recommend this winery to start, they will become the yardstick by which you measure the rest.

Who knew that a Riesling could be dry and delicious?

By Discerningsenior42 |

We first experienced a wine tasting by Trefethen at a pre-wedding celebration in Napa. Was totally surprised when I discovered that the dry white wine I had just tasted was a dry Riesling. Sunday morning after the wedding we high tailed it over to the winery to stock up on the Trefethen 2011 Dry Riesling, from the Oak Knoll district of Napa Valley. We did not take a tour of the winery but it is in a lovely stone building and the staff are very accommodating.

Highlight of our Napa Visit

By gradysdad1 |

This vineyard was our first stop on our tour of Napa. We knew it had suffered severe damage as a result of an earthquake so we were not surprised that the wine tasting took place in a fancy tent. We were seated at our table and I felt comfortable and taken care of right away. The woman (whose name I forget, sorry) was very knowledgeable and personable. She answered all our questions and gave us good information about the wines we were tasting. It was a very enjoyable experience with our friends. We ordered several bottles to be shipped back home. They have arrived and we are enjoying some very good wine.

Excellent wine and service

By Crichelle |

This was our second time to visit Trefethen but I ended up joining the club and came back for a third visit the day after joining. Angie was amazing and Joe was fantastic as well. They both go above and beyond for their customers. I definitely recommend to anyone who visits Napa!

Hard to Believe They Are So Highly Rated

By jackson55555 |

Nothing spectacular or worth visiting. Although the winery was empty they did not appear to be interested in having us understand their wines. Although they were famous for Chardonnay - Rombauer and Domaine Chandon have much better California Styles Chardonnay. Their Cabs appear adequate - but you can do much better in Stags Leap.

Little in terms of a gift shop.

I always go here as they have good value and a wide selection.

By gerbsWestVirginia |

Tasting room staff has good knowledge of all the wines.

A wonderful experience with some special wines.

By Myron M |

We had a great time at Trefethen. Everyone was really friendly and helped us learn a lot about their wines. And their wines are fantastic! This was my favorite winery that we visited on our trip to Napa. The Dragon's Tooth (a Malbec-heavy blend) is great, and their Rieslings (both the late harvest and dry) were incredible. We felt really well-taken care of, and definitely recommend a visit here if you're in the area.

More Great Wines

By ckphoto |

We visited in June of 2015 while the main building was still under repair. Our sommelier was very personable. He let us combine from the different lists to taste just reds. We ended up loving the Dragon's Tooth, which I have since ordered from home. Stop by and try these wines.

We'll be back - always a personal experience.

By MDRV |

Trefethen winery is a favorite to revisit and our recent stop at the temporary tent reception area was no exception. We read about and followed the events of the earthquake and damage to the historic building, and Michael - always gracious - was kind enough to walk us around the winery to show us the reconstruction. Wines tasted were excellent and additional tastings tailored to each of our interests. We miss the beautiful interior of the winery, and will return to see the finished project - so pleased that the family is rebuilding after the earthquake. We always learn about the winery and its history every time we visit.

Nice Reds!

By TwinkleTravler |

Staged in a luxury air conditioned tent, our reserve tasting was enjoyable - several noteworthy reds at generally reasonable prices.

Skip it

By oojaded26 |

We were taken here on a recommendation from our driver and while the drive up seems nice, that was the extent of the experience that we enjoyed. The tasting was done on a couch and our server was already serving different wines to two others on the opposite couch. This when it came to serve is wine he was quick on an explanation and just returned to the other two who were not in our party. It did not allow us to ask questions and given that we were doing a paid tasting, you would think you would get some kind of service. That alone turned us off from buying wine or recommending this place.

Trefethen

By Bob S |

Nice winery. Easy to get to. Friendly atmosphere. They had some nice red wines, many of which are not available in Southern California which is why I bought a bottle of their Cab Franc.
I did not like that they did not give credit for tasting towards purchasing their wines.

A+++ Tour

By Meganlynne0218 |

Wonderful tour! Best value for the money of any of the winerys we went to. Must go if you are in the area!

Must visit winery

By MNBB |

The wine tasting building is located in a beautiful setting and is a historic building.

Recommend that you try the white wine flight. You can ask for it when booking or upon arrival. An awesome change of pass from the traditional red "heavy" wine tasting.

The wine host was well versed in the building, the winery history, and the wines. Brought out some additional wines to try that thought we would like after talking with us about wines. Don't shy away from their reds though.

Many good wines that should satisfy your novice to experienced wine drinker and at a great price point.

Lacklustre

By Cpwee |

Last pit stop before we headed back to SF. The vineyard, upon entry, was majestic with the vines covering acres. Was rather excited and paid for a tasting. They were rather busy, hence the guide was shuttling between a few tables, and hastily introducing the family history before rushing off again. The tasting took more than an hour for 4 wines not because we were enjoying, but we were kept waiting. Rather unmemorable. The wines on the tasting menu were rather average too.

Great wine and story!

By Rubixcubed80 |

Very secluded and romantic! The wines are spectacular and very limited release. Find a reason to visit!

Endearing!

By Samantha JK |

Great family vineyard and a fun-loving environment!

When you envision a winery and vineyard this is the place to visit.

By Michelle C |

One of the must wineries to visit. This was our first trip to Napa, our daughter & son in law love this place and said we had to visit. So wonderful to see the building re-stored after the earth quake. Michael was our host/guide he gets an A+. Very interesting and educational presentation of the vineyard as well as the wine tasting. He does have a charming dry sense of humor. Wish we could have had a liitle more time in hearing and seeing more of the processing area; the other couple that was along had another appt. to another winery.
Love the wine and all the selections we had were excellent.

An outstanding wine tasting

By stephen96821 |

I have visited dozens of Napa and Sonoma wineries since 1979. I would rank our visit to Trefethen as one of the most enjoyable and satisfying wine tasting experiences that we have ever had.

1. Atmosphere. My wife and I are escorted to the lounge area where we are seated in 2 leather lounge chairs by a window overlooking the vineyard. We are given breadsticks and bottled water.

2. Wine service. We ordered 2 different flights so we could try a variety of wines.

Wines are brought to us by our host who then explains the grape, style, etc. Our host was friendly, knowledgeable and personable. Never felt rushed.

3. Price. $50 each for 6 tastings

I strongly recommend this wine tasting for anyone who is interested in tasting world class wine in a very charming setting.

Hunter was "da bomb"

By GreenGirl2013 |

Trefethen was recommended to us by our driver, and I am so glad she did! It was the first stop on our day of touring and we found it be very welcoming. Our tasting guide was Hunter, he was friendly and seemed to know his stuff. He also had us laughing at his stories. The wines were great too.

One of my favorite places in NAPA

By Scubascott1980 |

This is my second time to Trefethen and I again had a great tasting experience. The host and staff were all friendly and knowledgeable about the wines. Every wine we tasted was excellent. The reserves were amazing. Coming from Massachusetts very few Vineyards can ship there so we purchased a shipping box for $6 and stocked up on some of our favorites. The vineyard is still family run and has acres of vineyards I think the most in wine country. The tasting area still has a small vineyard feel which is what I like best about Trefethen. Too bad they do not import to Massachusetts!
Definitely check it out, if you use Google maps you may get lost so follow the signs or call for directions.

Really nice winery

By LizzyJB |

We pre-booked a tasting at Trefethen but when we got there they didn't seem to have our reservation. It didn't matter because we were still able to taste lots of the wines in their beautiful tasting room. It was definitely a lot less formal than some of the other tastings we went to. Wines were good and it is a beautiful property to visit.

Good Wine!

By Gary F |

Beautiful vineyard & grounds. The wine is very good. We purchased several bottles to take home (Cabernet, Riesling). The Reserve Riesling is excellent.

Trefethen Vineyards Tasting is a Must

By Valerie K |

Reserve tasting. Wonderful hospitality and ambiance. We had our own table for two overlooking the pool and gardens. Hunter - our "guide" - was accommodating, knowledgeable, and engaging. Extraordinary tastings paired beautifully with a delicious charcuterie.

First class tour!

By Mo1962 |

We did the reserve tastings with Trish (?). It was great. She was very knowledged about the wine and the property. The tasting was in the original house which was a lot of fun. There was another group there with 5 and our party of 2. We all had a great time together. I loved the wines as well. She had us reserve some and come back to it after it sat. She showed s the barn that suffered damaged in the earthquake too. Highly recommend this special tasting.

What an amazing experience and great wine!!

By Vicki H |

Great wine!! Michael was our guide for the day! To say he was amazing is an understatement. He shared his immense knowledge on all aspects of the vineyard and the wine. It was more than what we had expected. We loved their wine, the facility and the outstanding staff. You have to go and take the tour with Micheal. You will not be disappointed!
Thank you for providing such a memorable experience!

Looks daunting, is not

By Steve K |

Long drive through finely finished grounds to get to the winery. Seems like it would be "snooty", but it is not at all. Employees are very friendly, you do not need reservations, and you can taste more than what you pay for, employees are proud of their vintages, and eager for you to try.

Very well put together. Intelligent staff

By Bradley O |

Wines offer a wide range of tastes. No matter your pallet these guys will help you find your perfect wine. The vineyard is spread out for many acres and the inside is huge. Great for large groups or a couple looking to grab a glass and chat in a corner. Comfortable setting and nice and friendly staff

Still Disappointed!

By Charlotte D |

This was our anniversary wine... we joined last year on our anniversary trip out, and were so excited to revisit as members....on our anniversary! This time... we even had reservations!

Unfortunately, this was not the experience we'd hoped for. Having moved out of the tents that we'd originally experienced after the earthquake, Trefethen is now back in a building. We were excited to learn all about the rebuild of the main building, and the celebration we would miss in two weeks! We were excited to learn about the new wines that have come out and how we could customize our club membership! We were excited to be here and have the same great experience we had as "nobodies" off the street, when we visited with Angie the year before! Instead... we got the the sweet, uneducated, college kid????

We were not offered the education on the building. We were not given an education on the wine. We were not treated as if we belonged there...

We did ask to speak with the tasting room manager, and after a fairly long wait, and an investigation on her part, we were taken care of. But in spite of their efforts, I'm sadly disappointed. We went several places this trip. We had a great experience overall. The ONE place we were members?....HUGE Disappointment.

If you go, ask for Angie or Andrew! They will give you an impeccable experience. The wines are truly amazing!! And the grounds?.... beautiful! I just hate that we didn't come away with the experience we'd hoped for.

Great Tasting @ The Villa

By Ned P |

On this, our first trip to Napa, there were wineries we expected to enjoy when we visited and wines we expected to love. But none surprised us as much as Trefethen. My wife’s comment sums it up nicely: “I love EVERY one of these wines!” Not only were the wines wonderful, but the experience (The Villa) was beautiful and extremely enjoyable, thanks in no small part to our host Gregg (Thanks Gregg!).

We were celebrating our 30th anniversary with this trip and Trefethen treated us very well. Beautiful grounds, great wines, great pours (with some off-menu - Halo!), great service and a lovely paired charcuterie board. And to top it off, Trefethen has some of the most affordable pricing on their bottles - even better with member pricing. I’m sure we’ll always have some bottles on hand now.

Make Trefethen a stop on your Napa visit!

Wordsmith Server

By Holly W |

Despite the rebuild and having to taste wine in a tent, they have really made the best of the situation they find themselves in. Our server was truly a word smith. He could make burnt butter sound delicious! We tasted 5 wines and they were great! If I had room in my luggage, I would definitely be taking a bottle home! A fun experience with a great staff!

Nice place. Ok wines

By Rick E |

Maybe we are getting to be wine snobs, but the wines we tasted here were average, in our opinion. Trish, our host, was great and did everything she could to keep us happy.

Treatede Badly

By MGKelly |

I had been wanting to visit Trefethen for years. For my trouble and $30 I was insulted by the tasting room attendant. When I stated I was a bit pushed for time, he said, "What is there a ball game on?" This was totally unnecessary. Needless to say the four of us in our party didn't buy any wine. BTW, the tasting room set-up is not conducive to asking questions. Skip this place!

Reserve a Reserve carefully

By Lestertheinvestor |

With more than 500 acres on the valley floor, this is a very large operation. As such, we had hoped for a more intimate and private reserve tasting of their higher end (non-commercial production) selections. Alas, this did not happen. Still, it is a lovely setting. The building moved about 4 feet with the earthquake, and then they painstaking moved it back, keeping just one pillar with a clock on it that shows the time of the quake. The "villa" is a home setting for the tasting. But, we didn't have any of the reserves, not even their supposed HaLo signature wine. Maybe next time they will get it right.

Nice wines, but the experience was disappointing

By PJB892 |

Right now, they are operating in a tent because of earthquake damage repair. That would have been fine - however, our host was trying to serve at least one other group besides us. The wines were introduced and then he disappeared. We love the wine education that the best hosts provide - good discussion and answers to questions. We didn't get that experience here. We did order wine - but it was in spite of anything the host did to solicit that order. An average experience at best even though there were some nice wines.

Awesome food and wine pairing, great location

By EscapeRoomJunky |

We had an excellent tasting and foot pairing. I definitely recommended. We were seated outside in a private location. It was a beautiful day with a beautiful view. The wines were explained. Each wine had a paired food. The food was amazing and set off the best side of the wines. I would definitely recommend this. Reservations were required. We made ours about 6 weeks in advance. That may depend on the time of year. This is also (fall) a beautiful time of year. The winery property has some beautiful redwood trees and fall leaves were all very colorful.

Great time tasting wine

By kayakermike |

Came here with my wife, and got to talking with the hostesses, who were super friendly and seemed to really enjoy having us there. Great talk, generous pours and the wine was fabulous. We're not experts by any stretch, got some good education and hilarious stories about the wine business and some of the more eccentric characters who've passed through. Will definitely be back next time we're in Napa.

great place, great wines...

By FoodCritic89 |

Shannon is first class, great wines, incredible facility. Tasting is worth the trip. Really good reds and whites. Consistently good wines. Their "Double T" is an excellent value for everyday wine.

Favourite Tasting in Napa

By Jenna N |

We had an incredible time at Trefethen Family Vineyards. Josh was very knowledgable and helpful and made sure we had fun. The wine was delicious and the grounds were stunning. We would without a doubt recommend this tasting.

Tasty tasting

By Jan L |

Did not book in advance, just stopped by chance as someone had said Trefethen had nice whites - and they do! We did an all white tasting - nice environment, really nice and informative staff, learned a lot about why smaller grapes is the winner when it comes to quality wines.

Beautiful

By LMB |

The drive into the winery is just amazing. It is hard to believe the highway is so close since you feel engulfed by the vines as you approach. The rustic building is beautiful and you have your tasting seated at a hight top table. Nice experience

Dragon's Tooth!

By KristenVandalay |

A top winery to visit in the area! We were given the recommendation at Andretti's and so we took a chance, despite not having a preferred reservation. They were wonderful, and served us, then took us on a stroll around the winery. Besides having some incredible wines, they were also hit the hardest with the earthquake of 2014. Interesting to see where they had done repairs, and to hear how they took care of all of their employees throughout their troubles at the winery. We went for the Reserve Tasting (when you split tastings you can hit more wineries!) and had some of the absolute best wines of the trip. The Dragon's Tooth was memorable, and a favorite!

Exactly what you would expect at a large vineyard

By shfine |

If you want to learn about wines, don't go here. This is a typical run of the mill vineyard that asks for money, pours you a bit of wine and sends you on your way. We tend to like vineyards where they will spend more time with you, and we didn't get this here, we also didn't expect to - but it would have been nice for them to spend more than two seconds with us.

Trefethen

By Sarah F |

We visited Trefethen last week while visiting Napa Valley. The red wines were very good but the whites just ok. The tasting experience was ok. It had more of a bar/pub feel than a winery atmosphere. It depends on what you are looking for in a wine tasting experience.

great, quiet spot

By Lynn H |

The staff here were knowledgeable and friendly. Our group unanimously decided this was the most delicious wine of all our many tastings. It was all lovely and the scenery was beautiful!

We had a lovely experience at Trefethen Vineyards

By Anthony S |

We had a lovely experience at Trefethen Vineyards. The server was very attentive and we had good wine. We bought 4 bottles, 3 Chardonnays and I Cabernet. We had an excellent experience and the decor was lovely.

Beautiful Winery

By AnthonyDB107 |

My friends and I had a great tour of the winery. This was one of the larger wineries we visited but the tour was still small and intimate. We really learned a lot about the soil and winemaking process from this tour. The amount of grape varietals that are grown here are incredible. You get a really long and scenic drive on the way in through the vineyards. They have some great arial shots of the land and the different types of wines grown in the area. This place is open slightly longer than other wineries so if you get in later in the day due to flight delays you may get lucky and be able to fit it in I bought a bottle of the Dragon's tooth wine but there were a couple wines I really enjoyed here. I would come here for the wine first, then the tour.

One of the best tastings and scenic tasting room experiences

By carsan |

We went first thing on our 2nd day (so winery number 7 on trip) and we did have an appointment set up. Trish our wine host, was so friendly and took the time to ask us about our tastes to customize our experience, especially since I can not drink whites. The setting is beautiful in the old residence of the family and each tasting is in a different corner or area of the house, so you feel like you are being entertained as someone's house guest. The wine was all very good and we easily shipped some home. I think this is a must do on your list.

Beautiful winery!

By Lee Ann P |

This was my favorite winery in Yountville. The grounds were gorgeous. The trading server, Michael, was very knowledgeable and answered many questions for us, not just about the wine, but the grounds, the area and many other topics. I highly recommend this winery!

Don't let the tent fool you...it is good!

By jeffalanj |

Very professional and knowledgeable of the wines here and in the area. I was surprised to see a tent, though a very nice clean tent. When we sat down we saw pictures of the results of the earthquake which explained the tent. This was are second trip to the Napa Valley for the Brian Culbertson Jazz Festival and this was the second winery we have visited. My wife and I left with four bottles of wine and we are very happy with our purchase. Bob is a good guy! It is by appointment though we didn't have one. It wasn't busy and we were fortunate. We appreciate the hospitality we received. This area is Yountsville and it was our first time in this area. Thank you very much. We will recommend this winery to our friends in Fresno.

Stop #2 on our tour

By MKCjr |

Was really looking forward to this winery based on what family members had told me. Our group of 10 adventurers made this our second stop of the day. Our host was knowledgable and presented wines we were interested in. Bland breadsticks were great for keeping our palettes calm. Wine was excellent but fell short of my, maybe too high, expectations. Will definitely pick up some Harmony Chardonnay at home.

Wine, History, and Beautiful Grounds

By James B |

Trefethen, (pronounced: Tre-FETH-en), is a destination worthy of the best part of your day. We made reservations, and got there a bit early, just to stroll the grounds a little. Lovely.

We wanted the full experience, so we did the Vineyard and Winery Tour. It was an interesting walk through the history of Napa Valley, Trefethen, the storied winery building, and the development of their wines. Tours and tastings by reservation made us feel more like we were getting their undivided attention, some wine education, a sense of Trefethen's place in Napa, as opposed to a sales pitch ... the wines would sell themselves, really.

The Whites:
We started with some crisp Dry Reisling that got our attention right away. This Reisling was the perfect compliment to such a warm sunny day. Put this one on the list! My next favorite is the Sauvignon Blanc, bright, with layers of flavor. Not usually a fan of California Chardonnays, I was delighted that Trefethen's Chardonnay has only the suggestion of malolactic fermentation.

The Rosé:
This wine is best described as "fun." A few bottles of this rounded out our purchase, and have already made their way poolside here at home. Friends loved them.

The Reds:
I'm prone to deep complex reds, and there are great choices here. Anywhere else, their Signature Cabernet Sauvignon would be the be-all-to-end-all, but here it is just the beginning. This wine is will hold up for years, and only get better, and better.
A classic, 100% Cabernet Franc is my favorite red, and this is the best among them. It is a readily identifiable, single vineyard, truly memorable example of this grandparent of every cabernet sauvignon. Once you know this wine you will really start to understand Cabernet.

For similar reasons, the Malbec called my name. Familiar to most of us as a blending wine, used to precisely balance some of the other offerings, this Malbec stands boldly on its own and deserves a place in your long-view cellar. Here, the winemaker is masterful in using a complex series of transfers of the wine to different types, and ages, of barrels to get just the right portrait of this varietal. Don't miss this one.

So, ... If you are looking to build a collection of wines that will be an investment in the future, Trefethen is the place to start. A tour and tasting will steer you towards some "drink today" wines, as well as give you an opportunity to see the future of great red wines. Listen carefully, keep careful notes, and open these red wines when the time is just right for you.

Memorable experience!

By 348deannah |

This was one of our favorite places during our 10 day trip to Wine country. Michael was our wine host/educator and he did a fabulous job. Very friendly and knows his wine! My husband and I enjoyed it so much that we are already planning to return with some other friends.

Really Enjoyable Experience

By kewarburton |

We were staying at the Marriott Napa, and as part of our package had been given vouchers to exchange against 2 tasting experiences. We visited Trefethen last and couldn't have had a nicer time. From the moment we were warmly greeted we felt comfortable and welcome. I expect much of this is to do with the fact that it is a family run vineyard, so all the people who work there actually care. We were able to taste wines from both tasting menus, without feeling self conscious or rushed. The staff were knowledgeable and friendly and there was a great atmosphere amongst all the other guests. It's just a shame they don't ship to the UK. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting Napa.

Great first tasting!

By Rileyreese27 |

This was our first stop of the day, and what a cool historical site for a tasting room! If you have anyone in your group that loves Reisling, don't pass this by! The Reisling and Chardonnay will not disappoint, and the ambience is very cool and unique too!

Great way to have a tasting...on a bike!

By momofthecs |

We visited here as part of our bike tour and the table that they had for us was outside in the garden. It was nice to have a rest after riding. We enjoyed our ride through their vineyards immensely as this winery has one of the longest, most beautiful roads through the grapes until you reach the winery itself. Enjoyed the wine and loved our server. Attentive and helpful but no pressure.

A Great Start to a Great Day

By Katrina T |

Our host Nicholas was phenomenal in not only explaining the wines, but the history of the winery and the family. We got to see the harvesting process, eat grapes off the vine and sample the delights from the garden. It was cool at our tasting as it was early in the day so we had the pleasure of sitting outside on the beautiful grounds. Nicholas was clearly passionate about wine and educating us as well. What a great experience and start to our tours!

Worth it.

By marc f |

Finding it was not hard, as our Nav was accurate for this one (yay, woohoo!). What a beautiful drive through the vineyard to the tasting room. As noted by others, they were hit by the earthquake in 2014 and they are working on restoring their main tasting room and building. We gladly held the tasting in their makeshift temporary quarters which was quite spacious and up to the task. For our third tasting in a row, we were served by someone young and sporting a beard (thankfully all three were men!). What gives?

To our delight, there were very few wines we tried that were not, in our humble opinions, excellent. Napa is known for its reds, but we ended up taking with us a case of whites. Everything we tried was great. Chardonnay, Quandary, Riesling, etc. Then we had the reds, and they were also very, very good, particularly their Cab, Merlot and Dragon's Tooth. Had to take a couple of those, too. And the late Harvest Riesling was so yummy, so we had to by a few of those. Great dessert wine. We gladly joined their club.

By far, our favorite wines so far on the trip. Don't skip it.

Wonderful Tasting Experience!

By Davida H |

We opted for the seated tasting in a private room with a charcuterie board - it was an awesome experience! Our wine host, Sally, was very knowledgeable and personable and made our entire experience very pleasant. And the wines we tasted - both white and red were great. The grounds and main building were beautiful, not to mention historical. All in all, a truly memorable experience - highly recommend!

Wonderful wines with deep history

By Ivana Y |

Gorgeous vineyard with wonderful hospitality! We came in without a reservation and staff was very welcoming the moment we stepped in. We loved the wines so much we ended up joining their club! Christina was our host, and she was very knowledgeable. Left home with a case of their Malbec and Cabernet Franc, highly recommended!

A missed opportunity.....

By Bruce W |

The wine was good. The setting was pretty. The host was knowledgeable. And like most Napa places they waived the tasting fee when we bought a case of wine. But unlike most other wineries, when the host will "read the room" and open some library bottles to taste if asked, our host wouldn't do it ("Sorry only for club members"). Not sure if this is mandated by the winery. But we'd spent over $2,000 on library wines at other places (and joined one club) the last 2 days here...so it was a lose/lose decision.

Enjoyable Tasting at a beautiful vineyard !

By ShannonTS |

One of our favorite tastings in Napa.

Such a beautiful vineyard with excellent staff. We truly enjoyed our tasting with Matt and the beautiful food prepared by Natalie. You must do the reserve tasting. It was worth it!

We cannot wait to get our first shipment!

Very good Cabernet Sauvignon

By David from La Palma |

Our first visit to Trefethen FamilyVineyards. Reservations were required, which was a problem in the past for me, but now most wineries in Napa Valley require reservations. A very nice tasting room located upstairs in a pictureque building. Tasting fee for the red flight of wines was $35. We had differing opinions on the different red wines served, but we all agreed that the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon was very good. Excellent service. Beautiful location in the middle of their vineyards.

Shannon made it so much fun!

One of the original wineries in the area, they have amazing Sauvignon Blanc, and loved the Dragon tooth. Great for Game of thrones fans! They have retained the integrity of the space and they were happy to share other wines that weren't on the tasting menu.

Love this place even in a tent!!!

By Cynthia A |

I have always loved Trefethen wines, especially their Chardonay!! Know they were affected by the earthquake last year but they have done a great job improvising with the tent. Michael our "wine educator" was tremendous...funny and attentive! We had a great visit and will continue to drink their delicious wines!!!

First Wine Club I've joined!

Amazing winery. Many excellent wines. Stuck with reds and was not disappointed. Andrew was an excellent guide on our journey. Great explanations. Looking forward to our selections showing up starting next month.

A treat in Napa

By MrMajik |

While in Napa, we wanted to experience wine tasting with food paired at a vineyard. We chose Trefethen Family Vineyards "Taste the Estate" at the Trefethen historic winery. The tasting was held at the original estate manor house.  We were seated outside on the porch overlooking the beautiful grounds and gardens.
I felt like we were in a botanical paradise. The ambiance was intimate, peaceful and small bites were delicious and beautifully presented. You realized that Chef Chris has his heart into each dish served. We were very impressed with their reserve cabernet sauvignon. Would highly recommend Trefethen's "Taste the Estate" experience. Jenny was our host, and she was friendly, attentive and informative.

A happenstance visit to Trefethen with a friend four years ago has become a "must-stop" anytime we are in the area. This year we brought reinforcements -- a total of 10 family members and friends traveled from seven states and had a blast! Our Napa Valley Bike Tour was planned around a visit to Trefethen and the ride up the driveway was spectacular. The tasting experience was exquisite, we were treated like long-lost family and introduced to our new favorite rose, SIN. (I had a case shipped back to Virginia.) We enjoyed all the wines we tasted, but the Cabernet chocolate sauce we took back to our lodging to enjoy with desert was the biggest hit. Two days later we were back at the vineyard, picking up more to take home! Guess what everyone will be getting for the holidays?!

Taste the Estate

Great visit with the tasting with food pairings. We enjoyed most of the wines, the food was delicious, and the scenery was amazing. I definitely recommend the Taste the Estate experience if you can make it work. A really nice time!

Excellent Wines and Tour

By charles m |

We visited five different wineries on our trip to Napa. This was the best. The Facility was impressive. The wines that we tasted were very good. The tour was the only one that took us out to see the grape vines, but perhaps the best part was our tour guide, Enrique.
He did an great job. His knowledge about wine growing and the history of both this winery and the wine industry is impressive. We chose this winery because a friend recommended it as the best they saw. We were glad we did. so much so that we joined their wine club.

Wonderful at Trefethen

By ricksteveswannabe_11 |

Recently attended a private tasting event at Trefethen, and found the newly remodeled Winery to be fabulous. The original tasting room has been completely remodeled, and is very nice inside. They were able to update to ADA standards, and created a great place for tasting, they even worked in a bent column that was damaged in the earthquake into the design - very cool!

Our event was held in the back garden of the family house, which is gorgeous! The grounds are beautiful, calm cool and relaxing. Mimi and Enrique were fabulous hosts, filling us in on the long history that Trefethen has in the Napa Valley.

And the wine was pretty great too! While we liked everything that was poured, the Dry Riesling, and the Dragon's Tooth (Malbec based blend) stood out.

Highly recommend a visit to Trefethen.

Awesome Experience

By jasmineseliga |

Jesus made this experience beyond great for us! We arrived for a 10 am tasting last Saturday and had been to a few wineries the day before. All were great but we hadn't really received the full educational experience on the wine/wine making process. Not only did Jesus sit down with us personally and explain the wines, he answered all of our SEVERAL questions. We loved Trefethen so much we didn't want to leave! The staff in general was so extremely kind and we have said over and over that this was our hands-down favorite winery visit in Napa Valley. Such a great job! We are big time red drinkers but left with 2 bottles of the Rose and one bottle of the Riesling!

More than happy to discover Trefethen Family Winery!

By Y B |

I stayed at The Inn On First hotel and the owner Jamie recommended Trefethen Family Vineyards saying that it is very historic and nice winery.
Indeed, this winery was so welcoming and I saw that staff were taking good care of each customer group. During wine tasting, we enjoyed all five different wines and were very happy to find some bottles to take home.
Thank you for taking your time to educate us about all the back ground of Tefethen Winery history! We will definitely comeback to try again all varieties of wines!

Nice venue in Oak Hill district

By Norine C |

This family winery is quite large and the building is from 1880’s. Beautiful setting and large comfortable tasting room. They offer multiple tasting flights from $25-$35. We tried the reds which were good, ranging from Pinot noir to full Cab. Most of their wines are readily available. Informative tasting and worth visiting.

Beautiful Mid-Size Estate close to downtown Napa

By Lauren O |

We arrived at Trefethen just before they closed at 4:30 and were welcomed to their upstairs tasting room. The grounds are grand and the entrance driving up is breathtaking.

Andres & Michael were very knowledgeable of the wines and grape varietals grown on their properties. The facility has been completely remodeled since the 2014 earthquake. The building is spacious and quite beautiful, only a short drive from downtown Napa, so we drove ourselves.

They offer small lot tastings ($25) full red tastings ($35) we had one of each. They also offer combination red/white tastings.

We purchased a 2015 Pinot Noir. Would definitely recommend.

Relatively close to SF, great wine

By Wanderer2662 |

We read a review of this vineyard that described it as a gem, and they were right. We were somewhat short on time so needed to visit wineries that were closer to the city. The winery was damaged by the earthquake in 2014 so the tasting is done in a tent, but it was a nice tent! The staff were friendly and showed us a map where the grapes for each wine grow, described the various soil types, etc. Between the five of us, we tasted a lot of wines and ended up joining the club because we liked all of them - some more than others but didn't find any unacceptable. The Quandary white blend was a favorite as a summer wine - fruity but not sweet. Another favorite was the 2011 Cabernet, but they only have magnum bottles left. The Chardonnay was another really pleasant surprise, since we are generally in the ABC club (anything but chard). This one was not overly oaked or buttery - crisper than most chards but still rich for a white. If you join the club you get a 20% discount and a free tasting with a commitment to buy a case over the next year. Regular tasting fee is $25, premier is $35. The Chard that we liked was from the premier list.

Big winery, but low key

This winery was recommended by friends before I visited Napa and it did not disappoint.

JUST DIDN'T CARE - Blase

By Mark S |

We visited on April 9 and were VERY DISAPPOINTED. We were hosting family visitors from Chicago and North Carolina and our reservation to Trefethen was the first appointment we made. We have visited Trefethen many times over the past 30 years and planned to make this visit the highlight of the trip - unfortunately it was the low light - bummer. We experienced disinterest and lack of enthusiasm for our visit. The visit was just blasé. Maybe it is because the barn is being renovated and we were in the remodeled house/tasting room. But the first comment/greeting from our host was "what do you want to taste?" Nothing about the history, the "barn" with gravity based processing. A lot of our questions were answered but we had to keep asking in order to get anything other that wine out of this visit. We visited 5 wineries over 3 days. All of the other wineries (smaller) cared that we were visiting and we left with a special feeling. Maybe Trefethen is just too big and too commercial.

Final comment. I provided this feedback through the wine club and Patti forwarded the feedback onto the Tasting Room Manager a week ago. Do you think I have heard back - no! Just confirmed my opinion that they just don't care which is why I decided to post this review on Trip Advisor.

Really wonderful winery

By tgrdvrmd |

Our excursion group from American Cruise Lines came to this well known winery and it is top notch. The history of the vineyards is attention holding and the winery itself is superb. We sampled several different varietals and they do a great job. The tour of the winery was a highlight of this trip. We could certainly return here.

Great tasting experience in wonderful facility

By AlexandriaGrandDad |

Newly repaired, restored and modernized, the tasting barn is almost worth the visit alone - but that would ignore the great wine that you get to taste. Serving staff was very friendly and knowledgeable.

Friendly, knowledgeable staff, fine wines

By E4468HCjerryb |

We were at this winery several months ago without reservations, and were not able to be seated on this busy day. We were impressed that they still gave us a taste of two wines without charging us. We appreciated their gesture, so returned, this time with a reservation. We were seated promptly, and were treated to a very knowledgeable and friendly host, George. Their wines were exceptional, and George explained each one expertly. The tasting room is still in a tent, as the winery is still receiving from the devastating effects of the earthquake. However, once you are inside, it does not feel at all like a tent. It is very nicely appointed and has a comfortable feeling.
