Great biking

By Marianne May |

Really fun place to settle in and bike all around the back roads of the island and see the pretty and quiet streets and homes near the ocean. The tide is very low at times so you can ride your bikes along the water

A Beautiful Expanse of Sand, Surf and Marine Life

By Deborah A |

We had a very relaxing time walking the beaches of Tybee Island. Saw lots of starfish, sand dollars, crab 🦀 and a few small jellyfish. The beach was very clean and the incoming waves were pretty calm. Very clear water! As the morning progressed, the crowd began to grow.

good

By james mccarter |

Very nice place to experience the beach. good restaurants and friendly people. our only issue was that many of the bars allowed smoking, making the night life impossible for us to experience.

Good beach but crazy busy

By Shelliu |

There is metered pay parking to visit the main beach on Tybee. With a few restaurants, the marine center and the beach, it can get crowded on weekends but is still worth a visit. Watch cargo ships come in and out if Savannah ports and soak up the rays. Bring chairs and shade and come at low tide for the best experience.

Disappointed

By Tim |

Our first time to Tybee Island Beach. We were not expecting the sand to have so many shell fragments, pieces/splinters of wood, and gravel. It was over 80 the day we were there. It wasn't very crowded and enjoyed the 2 chairs and umbrella we rented for $40.

Not the best

By johnmM754OI |

Really? Metered parking all over the island? And we paid $&.50 for 2 hours! I have never paid that much to park at the beach; in fact, I don't remember ever paying to park at a beach. That plain ruined it. The beach itself was ok, but we became a bit wary when signs posted that the bacterial level was ok that week. We were told that since the Savannah River emptied into the ocean there, that it was susceptible to contamination. Well, it still looked nice, but none of us put a toe into the water. There were some areas that looked nice, but unfortunately we won't return.

Pretty but a turtle graveyard

By globetrotter |

The island is lovely. We used the Tybee parking app and it worked like magic, including the ability to extend hours. I couldn’t tell but it seemed like the parking fee once paid covered parking anywhere on the park and pay areas on the island.

If crowds aren’t for you, head to North Beach and park by the lighthouse.

The reason I could not give 5 stars was because we were upset by how many animals we saw killed by cars on 81. There was one section with a turtle sign, but without any speed slowdown required, that was a graveyard of turtles who had tried to cross from one side of the marsh to the other. I must have counted 10-11 of them in a quarter mile stretch. A few days were alive and trying to cross. One was on his/her back. There was nowhere to pull over and flip him/her over. One of the main draws to the island is its natural beauty but the people coming in are mowing down that beauty. Please drive slowly especially once you see that turtle sign. I’ve never seen so many wild turtles in such a small area.

The animals aren’t crossing the road. The road is crossing their home. The least we can do is drive slightly slower to make it easier to avoid crushing them to death. In the US where there are few regulations to help the vulnerable, the responsibility lies with us. Please please drive slowly down 81.

Not a Tybee Island Fan

By Taylor777 |

Do not go Memorial Day Weekend. This is my one and done. It’s overcrowded to the extreme. I’m staying in Tybrisa (15th street) and it’s over a parking lot with people doing drugs, puking partying and more. You can’t even sit on the balcony without hearing profanity rap music. My young daughters were cat called by a bunch of drunken men. I’ve only been here 2 days and I’m over it. This is not a family friendly place. Keep going to Hilton Head or anywhere. Don’t bother with Tybee Island. It’s almost like the city came to the beach and killed it. Trash everywhere.

First time in the atlantic

By mrsnewberry14 |

This was my first time visiting the Atlantic Ocean. It was cold but the experience was amazing. The beach was quiet and clean

I want to go back

By carda |

This place is beautiful the sunset is gorgeous it reminds me of the small beach towns in the movies. Can’t wait to go back and hopefully stay in a beachfront property

Do not bring a pet...Don’t go, not dog friendly

By gigigolf |

Got a $300 citation for taking our dog on the beach on a rainy and windy day in February.. the sign in the street was not obvious. All the citations in this town are $300 or more... beware, they don’t treat tourists well.

Tybee beach disappointing

By mkettrey |

Tybee island was hyped up. Not a whole lot of beach access. Everywhere you had to pay which we arent used to coming from florida. Very expensive in most stores. Hard to find convience stores.

$40 to park at a beach

By Sandy A |

Prepare to pay $40 for parking if you’re planning to stay the day. Do your kids want ice cream? Prepare to pay $20 for two ice cream cones and then get asked if you’d like to leave a tip at the carry out register. Bring a small loan if you’re going in one of the 20 gift shops that all have the same things.

Beautiful beach

By aaronj799 |

The beach was large and clean. Lots of shells where he tide had been. Pier and pavilion were nice. At low tide there were lots of pools and streams of water to enjoy. Lots of shops and restaurants nearby.

This Place Rocks

By cheryl n |

!st visit to the Island. Will not be our last. Love the north end of the beach. We was blown away with the views of the cargo ships. The beach is so pretty here.

Tybee Time

By Daisyah80 |

Loved our day trip to the island. We enjoy North beach, very family friendly and had beach chairs and umbrella for rental while there. Gentleman was extremely helpful and knowledgeable.

Very peaceful

By Marie L |

The beach was very clean and beautiful. Very peaceful , especially for a morning walk. Beautiful sunsets and sunrises, not crowded.

Exquisite Beach!

By quiet_wave |

Keep in mind that I visited Tybee Beach in April before the real crowds come for the summer so depending on time of year your experience may really differ. We went to Tybee in mid-April and it wasn't very crowded. There was plenty of pay to park spots on all the side streets behind the beach. It cost $8 for 2 hours. There is a long boardwalk down to the beach and then just a gorgeous strip of beach with water that is warmer in April than it ever gets in New England. We did go swimming and it was really nice. It remains very shallow so you can go pretty far out and still be able to stand. The birds are so active, swooping down and flying over you. I didn't see any other fish or jelly fish (the sign warns there may be some but nothing was around when we were swimming). I didn't see any lifeguards but they may be active once summer hits. People can drive on the beach, usually golf carts, so be aware of that. The sand is incredibly fine with bits of shell. You might want to wear beach shoes if you have sensitive feet - it really does have a different feel to it versus what you find on Massachusetts beaches for example. We loved it so much we went back the next day for a few hours and are planning to come back next April.

Dog UNFRIENDLY

By LVantall |

Took my 11 pound dog, in my arms, across the dune path to see the ocean. Sign said no pets on beach, and I thought I was respecting the rules by carrying him. Got a $300 citation. Absolutely ridiculous. Very bad experience, felt unwelcome as a visitor. Will not return.

disappointing, run down area

By Kelsey |

Extremely disappointing. We stayed on the island for a few days but left early. The area is very run down and most (not all) locals are VERY unfriendly. The beach was not what I expected at all, the rules and regulations were EXTREME for the beach. It was filled with dead sea life and was not a pretty sight. Paying to park at most places is also such a hassle. Would not recommend!

Fun time had by all

By Lead2829 |

Beach is great. I liked there beach better than Hilton Head because you didn’t have to worry about bikes. I liked the area around Hilton Head better.

Tybee Island

By lindyss |

Beautiful sunrise on Tybee beach. The beach was very clean. Lots of things to do around the water. ... no dogs allowed on beach though.

Awful from Thursday on

By Sara L |

Our trip started out wonderfully the first two days, but if you’re a person who likes to pitch your stuff out on the beach and feel at ease leaving it, this place isn’t for you. Later in the week the beaches become extremely crammed. We had people on top of us from 11 am and onward. The beaches are super clean, well maintained, and they have very professional life guards on duty. Our condo was near the beach, but as it got later in the week the neighbors were very unsavory. Yelling children at all hours, kids left out on the small decks to play, scream, and stomp. I could tell where my upstairs neighbors were at all times with their heavy footsteps.
Another massive drawback to this place is the food. We found maybe one or two restaurants that were decent. Everything else was nasty, rotten, unseasoned, etc. There are also what seems like far more dive bars than restaurants. Because of this, and the lower cost to rent out a place out here, there are lots of unsavory people constantly drunk and fighting. We saw nearly 1-10 cases of domestic violence EVERY DAY. There was a constant couple outside of our stairs on our condo screaming profanities at each other multiple times a day, and you could hear every word as if you were in the middle of the fight. This is not a place to rest and relax.
That said- We are one and done with this island. If I HAD to recommend it to anyone, I’d suggest staying a Monday-Wednesday and then traveling to spend your time somewhere a little classier, unless this sort of place is your scene. It just wasn’t my cup of tea.

Great beach

By Lottelli |

Lovely water, nice sand. Such a chilled and pleasant vibe. You can rent deck chairs if needed. There is a car park a short walk away.

First Visit to Tybee!!

By TMack82 |

If you like to avoid commercialized beaches then look no further. I really enjoyed the fact that there wasn't bars and high rise condos lined up and down the beach. This makes for a quieter beach experience in my opinion. Also, most of the shops/ food places are locally owned so no fast food chains except an Arby's. You can rent a cart to get you around the island and not have to worry about parking. Definitely my new go to for beach vacations.

Great time

By Krazee |

We came off season to visit Savanah and stayed in tybee Island great place good beach lots to eat and fun bars

Great Beach

By Eric R |

We stayed in the middle portion of the beach. I loved this beach, it’s clean, not too busy/crowded, and the overall area was beautiful. The south end of the beach seemed to be the busiest part with the most commercial places, kind of a Myrtle beach vibe. If you want to be in a quieter area of the beach, the middle is the way to go.

Fun beach day

By Russell3939 |

We found the beach to be very nice. The water was a decent temp for October. The beach is wide and long so that you don’t feel like you are right on top of each other. The pier is not much to see. It was fun watching the fisherman catch a 40” red fish. The only down side is there are a ton of fishing poles at the end of the pier which makes it difficult to get to the end of the pier. The sand is kind of hard as you get close to the water, otherwise a nice beach.

Beach Bites - Tybrisa Street, Tybee Island

By Papaws3 |

Beach Bites is a wonderful little place to get great food at a good price! Fantastic service. She was so polite and the the kitchen area was spotless! We carried our food back to our hotel and we all loved it!! Thank you so much for a great experience.

Not worth the trip

By nancyglikestotravel |

Very small beach town, not very many restaurants and bars. A few typical beachy shops along the one main street, but not very nice. The beach is wide though.

Disappointed

By randolph |

I was very diappointed with Tybee Island , was told how great it was and to visit there. I think it is ridiculus to have to pay to park everywhere even the resturants. You cannot see the ocean unless you walk over a wooden walkway to get there. When I questioned this they said it was to protect the dunes, I've seen dunes on many oceans and never encountered this. I will not be visiting this island again.

No Pet Friendly

By Pedrogszalay |

Surprise Surprise Surprise!!! When we get there to beach, no allowed pets !!! In other places in Savannah are pets friendly, specially stores, restaurants, hotels and vrbo!!! Hope you will change sign, it is hefty fine if you take the dogs in to beach.

Clean, not crowded, quiet, but a little rough...

By P7585anne |

We were impressed with how clean the beach was. Due to off season and/or the current Covid travel apprehension, it wasn't crowded at all. Also very quiet and people were extremely courteous of each others' space. That said, the sand was ok but lots of silt and crushed shells washed w/tide was a little hard to navigate and rough on bare feet. You definitely want to bring chairs. Lot of silt in the water so better get used to a real good shower outside before you return inside. Can't say we are fans. We prefer the softer sand, clear water and beaches on the gulf coast.

Tybee Beach fun!

By julia c |

Tybee has always been a favorite of ours with the pavillion and pier. There you can get drinks and a restroom is there also. There were signs out to keep 6 ft. social distant and we felt safe. We found 7 sharks teeth, that was a bonus!!

Great place to go

By ATC Buses Orlando |

Great setting, they filmed baywatch there for a reason. Visit Rockhouse Original bar and grill on tybrisa St. They have good food, better beer, and arcade games !!! also not far from there The Crab Shack restaurant.

Don’t plan on Uber or Lyft

By Ann F |

Great vacation spot but you need to know that it is difficult and sometimes impossible to get Uber or Lyft on the island. Plan on a rental car.

Nickled and dimed on parking

By Expedition603622 |

Negative; parking sucks. Everywhere you go you need to pay for parking and if you park at a meter that takes quarters beware no store owner is allowed to exchange dollars for quarters and the exchange stations don't all work. I walked approx 1/2 to finally exchange dollars for quarters (no joke) this island is more for adults than families. Wasn't the friendliest place I've ever visited...🤷🏽‍♂️
Positive; No pets allowed on the beach and the sunrises are great!

Tybee Island

By Via M |

Great visit for a weekend getaway. We will definitely be back. Our favorite part was the lighthouse and swings on the beach. Also, just incredible hospitality.

The backyard of the worst shack

By LBSEGM |

When I think of the hassle it is to be to code for restaurants and hotels. Most of the eatery are endangering clients, no regulations here, no food hygiene. No wonder hurricane hit these towns terribly, third world countries have better food and beverage regulations, building regulations. This is a SHAME by all means stay away from the food industry and hotels. Motels here.

Clean and beautiful!

By DENISE O |

Not as crowded in October, which was perfect. Clean beach, walkable and bicycle friendly. Shells to find, creatures and dolphins to watch.

DON'T GO TO THIS ISLAND

By Tom H |

The Beach was beautiful and the ride there was nice. But we ran into this street festival one of which I never seen and they were they squirting eachother, everyone and cars passing bye with high powered water guns which seemed funny at first but we did not pay it no mind. We got some food near the beach which was good but way over priced but so be it. Aftet, we started to go back yo our car and we noticed groups of rogue kids running around squirting everyone even dressed up people with water guns. We saw that the police had to come around the neighborhood to try to stop this type of activity. So we took a side road back to our car bye the beach. Then some kids came running up yelling we gonna squirt you and I asked nicely please don't we are dressed not for that type of nonsense. So they decided to squirt me anyway which made me very unhappy with them and I yelled at them. There father tried to yell some nonsense at me, I could tell he was extremely intoxicated because he was sluring his words. I would recommend staying far away from this place and just enjoy Savannah itself.

Tybee Island

By Paige |

Really loved this beach! It was family friendly and not too crowded! We loved going to the Sand bar it was so peaceful and there were so many sea shells!

Nice Beach Vacation Spot

By thoppilan |

Nice beach. Not too crowded. Used tybee vacation rentals to get a house near the beach and we all had a great time.

Great place to vacation

By dtukfan |

We loved visiting Savannah and Tybee Island, it was very beautiful lots to do, enjoyed, renting our golf carts and driving around the island

Tybee Island Sunrise

By Alyi J |

Tybee island is a quaint little village with shops and very beautiful sunrises. If your looking for a hippy island where you are greeted with smiles and a small town atmosphere Tybee Island will not disappoint! I enjoyed the bar at the peir and the locals who tightrope and hang hammoks under the peir. I also learned to throw the jellyfisj on the beach back into the ocean! So much wildlife and gorgeous little pull offs all the way to tybee ! I strongly recommend this island !

Meh beach

By Lbaugus |

If you’ve been to a Gulf beach (where I live) you’ll be disappointed. The sea grass and ocean are pretty enough, and we liked looking for shells. The lighthouse was being refurbished, so it’s all grey. The parking lots, bathrooms, and showers could definitely be better maintained.

Sunny getaway

By Kathy K |

After you've seen all the sights downtown head to Lazaretto Creek side of the island, lots of restaurants the locals love.Try the Sunset Cafe, sit outside front or back, or on the top deck overlooking the creek and marsh, watch people fish and wildlife, peaceful and the foods pretty good

Beautiful

By Sarah M |

So clean and beautiful! Everyone was 6+ ft apart and there were plenty of signs out. The beach was just gorgeous and the water was perfect. You can tell they take great care here!

Quiet

By Jennifer C |

Of course, it was February. This was a quiet beach with plenty of areas for walking. Birds and shells were plentiful!

Getaway with Hubby.

By Sarita B |

Our favorite part was the quietness and the way the tour company handled the rental in order to make our excursion wonderful. The guide was very professional and pleasant to talk with. The group we had the pleasure of riding with was fun and friendly. I would definitely book through Expedia again. No hiccups!!

Great beach for a weekday vis

By BPhilips |

We made a 5 day visit. The place was very busy on the weekend (especially Saturday) and we found it too loud and hard to enjoy. By Sunday afternoon the crowds had dispersed and we found it beautiful. It's a lovely long stretch of beach.

Tybee Island beach

By nawedqasim |

Nice beach with a pier. Not much crowded at least at this gym of the year but definitely a happening place visitors. Parking is again a challenge as its difficult to find one on a not so busy day I guess. There are a few restaurant around and gift shops around on the street. There were few shops/restaurant at the pier as well but closed and looked abandoned.

The lighthouse is at around 10 minute drive from the beach. It closes a little early so could not go inside except for a few clicks from outside.

Disappointed

By Alan Wks |

We were traveling through and wanted to check out Tybee Island. Overall it was a disappointment. We would not purposefully choose this as a future beach destination. It is not all that nice. Compared to most every other beach I have been to, and I've been to hundreds all over the U.S, Canada and Mexico, and lived on several, this would rank in the bottom 10%. Unattractive, dirty, overflowing trash barrels, difficult pay to park, a bit low rent. Ugh. If this is the only beach you have ever experienced in your life you may think its wonderful. However, its not for me. Sorry Tybee.

Be there at sunset!

By SouthernBellGa |

Nice beach for sunset photo shoots. Go to the beach right across the road from Tybee Lighthouse. Sunset was amazing. Lighthouse lit up as it turned dark. There's a swing near lifeguard tower. Public restroom available near the restaurant.

BAD

By hannah J |

The worst parking 4 minutes per quarter
Everyone closes early or not open !! they literally make there own rules do t believe the times online ! nothing to do for kids or teens nothing to eat the water was nasty everything is extremely overpriced Every gift shops has the same things only one place to get a decent drink at GOTO JEKYLL ISLAND

Barefoot, collect shells, dance with the waves, hold hands

By Marcus D |

The long boardwalk from parking to the beach was like an appetizer as we approached the water. It was certainly too cold (for us) for swimming, but quickly the shoes and socks were tossed aside, pant legs rolled up and into the froth we ventured. Sky blue and holding hands. What a great time to be alive and to be together

Sunday on the North beach

By Carolyn K |

Love the beach and pier! First time experiencing Georgia beaches - Wide, easy to walk on & relatively clean with conservation of turtles & wildlife a visible priority- signs up for no smoking but people do anyway but that is just about all beaches unfortunately. Calm & easy to get in the water - seems to be a go-to spot for families & teens. Only stayed a few hrs as was getting more crowded than we felt comfortable #COVID - glad to experience it - want to look for quieter beaches to check out next.

At least it's not too far?

By Michael A |

A beach is a beach? There's no parking, it's a flat meaningless stop and not even a tourist stop worth going to, but if you drive out there don't miss Fort Pulaski along the way

Chance to getaway

By tjay s |

Went here while visiting Savannah. Only a quick 20 min drive this island has beautiful long stretches of sandy beaches...metered parking available at end of each side streets

Not Dog Friendly Beach!

By Scenic51805815782 |

First have to say we were looking for a dog friendly beach. They say they are dog friendly tho they are NOT. You will get a fine a BIG fine if you take your dogs on the beach. Few and far between restaurants are dog friendly. Dog friendly in this town means you can walk around town with them. The town is small and quaint. The beach is only good for watching turtle. The water is 🤢 ! Food was ok. Not much to do unless you are a drinker and want to eat all day. Disappointed!

Not impressed

By Susie M |

I know it’s off season but found this whole area to be depressing and downright tacky. Local bars full of extremely drunk people and most restaurants closing by 8pm. Maybe summer is better but stay clear in the cooler months - it’s just unappealing and dismal.

we drove 2300 miles for this?

By Mike M |

after a trip a few years back we decided to return for a few days, finding high rental prices, even higher parking prices, $3.50/hour for a minimum of 4 hours, and now warnings of venomous snakes at the beach, per the signs, so we left a day early, things to check out before you go

Fun in the Atlantic

By Brian S |

Use to go here all the time when we lived here. This was our first time back since moving to South Carolina. Kids love the ocean and playing in the sand. Great beaches and great fun.

Stay mid beach or North!

By Wiscofamily |

We just got back from a week stay and our first time on Tybee Island. Mid beach was nice and quiet, and the north part of the beach was very pretty to walk on. The south part, south of 13th street is absolutely horrible. Drunk, smoking, trashy people. It was rough. If you have kids I would not recommend going anywhere near this part. I was amazing people call this a family area?!? The pier is "okay" I guess better since no smoking, but still it's pretty rough... Mid beach and up is nice. Don't rent below 12th street unless you want the night life, bar action. Quick ride to Savannah and that was really pretty and a fun get away. I think one and done for this destination.

Great beach!

By Rodney S |

Beach was clean and is very wide. Water was warm. Only drawback is that it is crowded during the peak hours. We adjusted and went in late afternoon when beach isn't as crowded.

Beautiful beach

By Deb H |

Really beautiful beach. We were there on the perfect day. Only wished we hah a beach chair, umbrella and book.

Don’t come with a dog.

By Rene G |

The reason to come to Tybee is the beach. Sadly we won’t be back. We have a new puppy and they don’t allow dogs even leashed on any beach. Turtle season is over and they still won’t allow it. Talked to many people who say that they won’t be coming either because of the unfriendly dog attitude. People who work here at this policy so I don’t blame them. But it sure hurts their tourism. 🥲

Going downhill

By David B |

Unfortunately Tybee seems to lose its luster a little more each year. Finding parking can be a nightmare and when you do, it can run you $50 for the whole day and they’re talking about raising the price even more. Decent food is scarce but you can take a cooler and your own food/snacks. You can usually hear four songs playing around you throughout the day which makes it hard to enjoy any of them but you have the option of being the next one to blare it so you can hear what you want. Marijuana has become quite excessive but if you love the smell of it, you’ll feel right at home. I’d have to recommend HHI. Tons of restaurants, free parking and a higher class of people. It is what it is.

Peaceful and Relaxing

By Syreeta A |

Went on a Wednesday and really enjoyed the low crowds and peaceful waves and breeze. We will definitely be back.

We Saw Two Sides

By Denise K |

So we stayed at Beach Colony which allowed us direct access to the beach as well a multiple pools. During our visit (over a weekend) we wanted to see different sides of the beach so we drove down to the Pavillon and what I would refer to as The Tybee Beach Pier. We were stunned at the difference.

In our area there were a few people on the beach (Mid-Beach) it was quiet and family-friendly. Our beach was patrolled by local enforcement officers and an occasional lifeguard making sure things were safe.

Near the Pier we found garbage all over the ground, large groups (I mean like 50-70 per group) gathered on the beaches. People were drunk, loud, we smelled marijuana, etc.

The difference between the two parts of the island COULD NOT have been more stark. We went back to Mid-Beach and don’t ever plan to go back to that end of the island again.

Otherwise Tybee Island was amazing. The people were gracious and kind. We would return to Tybee in a second!

TIP: We flew into Atlanta and drove almost 4 hours to Tybee Island thinking it would be a scenic drive. Don’t do that - just fly into Savannah and enjoy the beach even longer.

We love Tybee Island

By Barbara K |

The pier is an awesome place to fish, listen to some music and take a walk. Its is a family friendly atmosphere

We had fun! It's the ocean and a beach!

By RDH2017 |

We splurged and rented two chairs and an umbrella for $50. Probably the best money we spent all day. We were close to the ocean and the pier which offered restrooms and good food to eat. The water was murky that day because of the rain, and it was windy which made for the "red flag" notice. but that didn't stop anyone from enjoying the water. It was not too crowded; we were there on a Sunday.

Tybee Island – visitors beware. Be careful.

By Thom L |

While Tybee Island is a great place to visit, they seem like they have a parking scam going on. Might as well go right to the city municipal building when you arrive in the city, and get your parking fine before you even take a parking spot. I shopped there at Christmas time where I was told by the store keeper, “parking is free until after January.” I believe that person and parked my car, I did try to access a the parking ticket machine - it didn’t seem to work. When I returned to my car after shopping at Christmas time, there was a parking ticket on my car for $47. Every car in the lineup where my car was parked had a parking ticket. We all believed that parking was free until after Jan., as voted by city council. I spoke to the person putting the tickets on the cars. She said “you should’ve went to the city’s app and you could’ve got free parking that way.” “You should go and get the app every for every city you go to.” “Our city manager is proactive.” Bottom line, it was a scam. Looked like free parking. But you got a fine/ticket anyway. I sent my payment of $47 promptly from Savannah in the US mail where I was staying. Two weeks later I got a letter informing me that it would be almost $70 for the ticket now, because I didn’t pay it. Probably another scam. I called them. They claimed they just got the check and said I could just pay the $47. Best to pay on line where you can have validation and proof of payment. These people are scary. I always stopped at Savannah on my way to Florida every year visiting. That tradition will now be broken. I’ll go somewhere else. I don’t need to be scammed. I don’t need to be robbed. Be forewarned!

Loved the beach but…

By Kacey B |

The beach itself was great, but this “officer” (I think she called herself Wendy) kept coming up and harassing the family next to us for having ONE glass coke bottle, not to mention it was sitting in a cooler. I mean seriously! Ruined our time and we felt so bad for that poor family!!

Never Visit Tybee Island

By Lee M |

Tybee Island is run by a police / corrupt criminal justice system tyranny. They are still under scrutiny by multiple lawsuits over police mistreatment, their idiotic parking policies designed to extort ever last dollar, and every other cruel and small town/small minded crap you can make up. Even homeowners who have put up with these corrupt POS local politicians are suing them. They have a beach and fading and broken down area to serve it for tourists but they'd prefer to harass and take all your money like some petty Southern mafia outfit. They roughhoused some good Savannah girl not too long ago and put her in cuffs because she didn't want to get abused like some common criminal.....for, uh, doing nothing. That's Tybee Island. Stay away, keep your dollars and go a little north or south and let them figure out what hell they crawled out. I'm sure the residents are fine. The people running the police and local government, however, need to talk to God since they've clearly been talking to the Devil and hate your guts.

Great spot for family beach trips!

By Kelsey Cherry |

We were visiting with a 2 and 5yr old and Tybee was perfect for their first beach experience! It’s easy to find a spot with the right amount of wave (the farther south you go towards the inlet the calmer the water is so we were able to find a gentle spot for the little ones to be safe in the ocean. The beach is compact so it’s very easy to walk on. The first day we visited was after a storm so there were lots of beached moon jellies which were fun to see, we didn’t run into any in the water and we saw lots of dolphins! Don’t miss out on the pier either. Lots of kids are fishing during the day, but once the sun starts to set it gets quieter and we got to watch some guys catch sting rays and sharks!

Ubers to Savannah are impossible!

By EmJen58 |

We wanted to spend a day at the beach while visiting Savannah. We easily got an Uber from downtown Savannah to Tybee Island but when it was time to come home there were no Ubers of Lyfts available. Turtle transit/taxis came to the rescue after we were stuck on the island for a few hours. Beach was nice and we overall enjoyed our day, but transportation not ideal.

Fun on the beach

By Raechelann |

Very clean, very beautiful beach. Our kids played volleyball and we enjoyed the calm surf and warm sand. Sorry we had to go home, can't wait to come back!

Beautify beach

By ellentambo |

Nice beach. We liked the eco touches such as child’s to protect from light pollution. The pier was fun to walk on. Lots of sand dollars. We went in march, not crowded.

Terrible people.

Complete rip off of a place. To be fair, part of the problem was with Booking.com (they booked it wrong in their system). They wouldn’t give me a $200 refund and neither would the owners of this place. What made it worse was, when I reached out to the owner of this place, she was extremely rude and hateful to me.

It’s a scam, but it’s a heck of a scam - so beware.

Tybee gets an F+

By mullinitover11 |

The beach was fine but the town and surrounding area is a dump. Below average food, multiple t-shirt shops—basically nothing nice. Go to Hilton Head instead. If you like tattoos, this might be paradise. We did have nice weather.

Wide beaches and nice looking beach front rentals

By etraveler123 |

Took a drive from Savannah and a quck walk on the beach before heading home. Not very busy area in late August, but the rental units near the beach looked quite nice.

Trashy, dirty, if you like to drink and smoke pot this is the island for you.

By Elizabeth |

Trash all over beach, nothing to eat after 7pm unless you sit in a bar with a bunch of rowdy drunks. Not a family place at all.

Ok beaches, but overpriced parking.

By Andy H |

As many have stated the whole island is pay to park. There are a lot of signs that say that. There is an app that makes it easy to pay. That said $4 an hour is ridiculous!! The only public restroom access is really on the North, and South beach. Not really an on mid beach. I believe that runs 1st-14th streets. The beaches are ok, but have way too many sharp shell fragments on them. Don’t forget shoes, or flops. The beaches are good size, and weren’t really that crowded. It’s worth a day trip, but don’t expect to be blow away.

Amazing

Very beautiful, clean and kid friendly. My family enjoyed our stay, especially the bike ride early in the morning with the whole family was awesome. I can't wait to go back and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Highly recommended 🤗

Tybee Island 2024 Getaway

By hapkido7 |

I can only say that it was very difficult for me to get out of the water! I kept saying over and over that this feels so great! The water wasn't cold, it wasn't hot. It was a darn near perfect temperature. The beach wasn't crowded, and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. I certainly was. I'm not sure if I was at the South or North Beach but I was to the left of the pier. The last time I visited Tybee Island I was on the right of the pier. I had planned to make sandcastles, but the water felt so fabulous that I mostly stayed in the water. I was there for 3 hours until the sun set behind one of the buildings in the background. It would not be good for it to get dark and then start packing up. We had everything packed up before it got dark around 8:30, and we had a lot of stuff. I've been to Tybee Island before, maybe in June. I think I will be going in July from now on but not during the 4th. I've done that before, and the crowd was huge. I had a great time and I'm looking forward to visiting again.

Great beach!

By Livinthelife |

Great beach! Clean, loads of room, public bathroom, reasonable umbrella and chair rentals. Perfect day.

Beautiful Family Beach

By Grachelle G |

Took the short drive from Savannah to the beach and really loved it! Cute little town with fun shops to walk through, and once at the beach, we found it clean and very family-friendly. We were there on a Thursday afternoon, so I am certain we missed a much larger weekend crowd. Easy parking, clean restrooms, and food options available on the pier.

Get a "ticket" on Tybee Island and they will Steal You Blind

By Lee M |

I had not been back to this beach in several years. I was back in Savannah to see someone but had time to kill so drove over to the beach. The last time I wrote about Tybee Island was about a kangaroo court summons for not coming in fast enough for a crazy teenage lifeguard and they basically extorted about $700 from me for nothing. The "honor judge" was a nasty old man who was actually a "personal injury" attorney from Savannah whose only role was to fine people for nothing. Their court was run as a money-making enterprise. There were smart ass cops smiling like hyenas waiting on the beach with their "court summons" booklets. I came back to live again in Florida and I have never had a problem at untold numbers of beaches on both coasts, and many beaches here don't even have life guards just signs that say swim at your own risk. It is like night and day because going back to Tybee I could count more cops than tourists and there was nowhere to park without paying out the nose. So I see nothing much has changed. When Covid paranoia/hysteria is over they'll be back giving out tickets like candy. It is also kind of dirty and run down for a tourist area.

We love Tybee

By Brandie L |

Fantastic! So thankful for Tybee! Gorgeous beach and plenty of space and love for people visiting! SO much fun!! Food and sun!!

Go early or expect to walk a long ways to park.

By LuvMex828 |

We spent a weekday at the Tybee Island beach right next to the pier. Get to the beach early so that you can find parking (don't forget to pay), rent a tent for $20 and chairs for $10 each and enjoy the day. There are changing stalls nearby along with a shower to rinse off.
The beach was clean with no trash, most of the people were families happy to boogie board and catch the sun.
The lifeguards did come by and make sure that people weren't boogie boarding too close to the pier.

Kinda dirty, jelly fish, dolphins

By Kara K |

The waves were great for boarding. The beach is spacious so we were not worried about covid.
But it was dirty and we had jelly fish encounters both days. Life guards said this is normal.
We did see Dophins!

Pleasantly surprised

By moxieme63 |

My first time to Tybee Island and I was pleasantly surprised how nice the beach was. Nice town with all locally owned businesses. Hope to return! We were lucky to go in between spring break and Orange Crush.

Great Beach with Island Parking Ripoff

By robert p |

Very nice beach. Anywhere on the island you have to pay for parking. I mean just about everywhere. Street parking too. I have never been to a place so unfriendly to tourists with their parking rules.

We were going to stop for ice cream on the way out, but there was only street parking posted for fees near the place. We skipped and went home.

awesome Tybee Island

By Discover50629272834 |

We went to Tybee Island GA for my retirement trip to myself with my daughter. We wanted to explore the areas too. Savannah GA; Hilton Head SC; Jekyll Island GA; St Augustine FL; We stayed at the Lighthouse Point Beach Club and had the best views of the ocean, ships and the beach was our backyard. I hated the steps to the condo but loved that view every morning. We ate at Stings Rays, Breakfast Club, Huckapoos, Bumba Gumbos, North Beach Bar and Grill. We did the Captain Derek's Sunset dolphin tour, saw dolphins but they didn't play or jump the waves; did the Shark Teeth Tour to learn how to find shark teeth but we didn't find any on our own. We climbed the Lighthouse steps, all 178, my legs hurt for days. was scary but so worth that view. We were there for the Beach Bum parade - we had so much fun with that. Every time we were near condo we were at our beach - looking for shells (took a freezer bag to collect them in - got lots), shark teeth, walking and taking lots of pictures. We got up one morning to see the sunrise from the beach, got sunset pic from condo and the beach. We could see dolphins from our condo and the beach. We went our first Saturday to Glazed and Confused to make our own souvenirs - that was fun, then over the week, we went to those little shops around it, to the souvenirs shops, pier and the Tybrisa shops, Tybee Marine ctr, Inlet beach, Back River and the day I decided it was time to get in the water more than my feet is when we saw 2 fishermen catch and release a baby hammerhead and great white shark. nope no waist deep for me. Lol!! We were here a week and we tried to do as much as we could and still catch the favorite places we saw listed on the facebook pages we were on. I know we missed some places, but I think we did 90% of our list. The people we talked to along the way were so nice and friendly, always asking us if we did this or that we would say yes or on list to do. fyi I know it cost to park, we were worried sometimes we would not make it back to the car or add more time before it ran out. so suggesting, add more time to your parking when you start so not worried about the fee expiring or set timer on phone to add more time if not ready to leave area you are at. all in all we had an awesome time and can't wait to go back. only problem I hated the 15 hr drive to the beach (from MO).

FYI : a bit of warning, if first time on beach from the condo walkways, be aware of your surroundings so can find your way back to the condo, it got dark as we were watching the sunset and ocean for first time and we couldn't find our way back, it was a very scary roaming around out there. lucky we saw someone walking with a flashlight from the condo is how we found our way out. thank God never saw any snakes. It would be nice if had flags or red lights to show the start of the paths.

The other places listed above: we did the old town trolley in Savannah and St Augustine; another dolphin tour in Hilton Head; GA Sea Turtle and Driftwood Beach which was awesome in Jekyll Island. we missed Jacksonville FL as running out of time. Just plan your days as there is so much to see and do. LOVE TYBEE ISLAND GA!!!!

A little bit of Heaven

By Jeannie Lea P |

I loved this beach. It was very clean and had a nice atmosphere. I had three teenagers with me and they loved it too.

Great beach but would go earlier in the year to avoid jellyfish

By stacie914 |

We stayed near 3rd street and the beach was great. Not crowded and the water was warm. The jellyfish were horrible and many in our group were stung multiple times (vinegar helps take the sting away immediately). The lifeguards rode ATVs up and down the beach due to bring too short staffed to be in a permanent spot. Very flat sand to take a walk. Lots of great seashells too.

Lovely experience.

By Rose B |

Tybee island was very laid back and not real busy in early April. Beach was very clean. Water was cold.

Nice beach

By aspoe093 |

Cool beach to check out. Got our feet wet and strolled a little bit on the beach. Didn't see any jellyfish washed up on the beach so that was a plus over HH.

Will not return.

By Christine S |

This is the letter I wrote to anyone who would listen after visiting Tybee Island.
Sir and Ma'am,

I am writing to express my deep disappointment and disgust following my recent visit to your town — a visit that, I can assure you, will be my last.

My family and I came to Tybee Island for a short, simple trip: one day to meet relatives and another morning to watch the sunrise. After enjoying a beautiful breakfast at the Sunrise Café, we exited through the back parking area and noticed an inlet with some quirky, inviting signs. Out of curiosity, we decided to take a brief look. We parked on the right side of the road, having seen a “No Parking” sign on the opposite side. We were gone for no more than fifteen or twenty minutes — just long enough to walk out, take in the scenery, and snap a few photos.

When we returned, we found a $115 parking ticket on our vehicle. To say I was shocked would be an understatement. Such an excessive fine for such a brief and harmless stop is outrageous. Upon looking around more closely, I realized that the “No Parking Beyond This Point” sign was almost completely obscured by overgrown vegetation, making it extremely difficult for any driver to notice it. I admit that we may have missed it, but the lack of proper visibility should be the town’s responsibility — not an excuse to penalize unsuspecting visitors.

Frankly, the way this was handled feels less like a matter of safety or order and more like an aggressive revenue tactic. Do you have an automated or patrol system that swoops in the moment a car pauses? The speed and zeal with which this citation was issued feels predatory and unwelcoming.

I am completely disgusted by how every corner of Tybee Island seems designed to extract parking fees from visitors. I have traveled widely and stayed in countless beach towns across the country, and nowhere have I encountered such a relentless, nickel-and-diming approach to parking. It leaves a terrible impression and sends a clear message: tourists are not guests, they’re targets.

For me, this experience was the last straw. I will never visit Tybee Island again. Our family in Wilmington Island will be as close as we get in the future. Even in Savannah — a larger and busier city — I was able to find reasonable, even free, parking options without being made to feel unwelcome.

Tybee Island may look charming at first glance, but that charm fades quickly beneath overpriced, congested, and exploitative government policies that value profit over hospitality. I will make a point to share my experience so that others know exactly what to expect before spending their time or money there.

Wild and scenic

By srgauger |

This is a lovely area and we fell in love with the beach and community. It was to cold to enjoy it at its finest, but was mesmerizing at sunrise and sunset. Next time maybe a visit in May.

Evening fishing

By Sue G |

Off season evening fishing. Beautiful beach, still quite a few people out and about. You must pay to park.

Wonderful beach!

By Patricia S |

This is a beautiful beach! I especially like that it has entrances at the end of many streets. (Our rental was just steps from the beach) Also a nice and handy fishing pier nearby. Through the week, the beach was not crowded. Saturday was a different story. Water was great. Beach combing was fair to good. We saw ships out at sea. My son-in-law saw a dolphin fin near my grandson! September is a good time to go if there are no hurricanes nearby.

1st time to Tybee and we loved it

By TNCyndi |

Destin is normally our beach of choice but wanted to do something different and can say GLAD WE DID. Really enjoyed our week here, nice beaches, relaxed atmosphere, loved it. Will be coming back.

Parking pros and cons

By Rachelle B |

Had a fun time relaxing in off-season. Never having been before, we were not prepared to pay to park everywhere. They make it easy with a phone app, but it malfunctioned and we got a VERY EXPENSIVE ticket. Friendly folks at city hall were terrific about helping us fix it and it was resolved. My advice, be aware of your parking situation and all will be fine.

No camper vans, no dogs

By Rhonda H |

My husband and I wanted to do a quick getaway to Savannah and Tybee Island. We found that dogs aren’t allowed on any beach at any time. Not a huge problem for us in January. Our dog is old and happy to wait in the car for an hour or two. We drive a camper van and we have 12v air conditioning if needed ( yes, we actually did use it a couple of times in January). We had read (on Vanly) that RVs were restricted from parking between March and October but that a police officer had said that it was bigger rigs with generators that were the problem. We paid for two hours of parking and walked on the pier and beach for about an hour. We came back to a $90.00 ticket because the lot restrictions had changed sometime since that information. Now the lot says “No RVs”. I called to dispute the ticket but I was told that because I have an air conditioner I am considered an RV.
I recommend staying away if you have a dog or a sleeping vehicle of any kind. They don’t want you here. I’m sure that they have enough tourists that they won’t care but what are those who travel with their dogs to do? You can’t leave them alone in a vehicle without air conditioning and they don’t want you to park anything with air conditioning in the lots. By the way, we were the only vehicle in the parking lot when we were ticketed. Seems predatory to me. Stay away!

Walked

By MrsB_TN |

The beach is wide and clean. We walked from southern tip to northern lighthouse. One day calm sea, another with waves rolling in. Beautiful sunsets and sunrises. Birds, kids, occasional fishermen, lots of folks enjoying the fresh air.

Not dog friendly at all…

By Gil K |

We thought this place would quaint and interesting but it wasn’t, for us. Expensive to park everywhere and absolutely no dogs on the beach even in low season.
Beach looked nice and light house history was interesting.

Friend screwed for drinking a beer on vacation

By Lee M |

I used to live in Savannah, which I loved. I hated the people who ran the government and police and law on this island. I just visited Mexico and didn't have a problem. These extortionists on Tybee Island want to make you suffer more than the cartel. A friend called me and told me he just got a parking ticket and a summons for open container (a beer). He thinks it may cost $400 or $500 to get out of it. I asked get out of what? He said it was a shakedown operation. He said he's headed to Florida too. He heard there is another Savannah corrupt lawyer acting as ass-screwing "judge" in the lunatic asylum that goes for their money making "court" on Tybee Island. The beach was not all that good too, so he's disappointed all around.

Passing thru

By Helen |

No free parking and no dogs on the beach. Beach is clean. Water clear.
Everything is subdued due to late season and Covid

Georgia beach

By Brendan B |

Major relief to find a dog friendly beach in Georgia. Way better than Tybee Island with the $290 fines.

HORRIBLE experience, Rip-off "conscienceless" Parking

By Brian_N |

Paid $3.5 for 1 hr parking at Ticket machine, parked where everyone/car parked, placed the paid receipt on Dashboard, spent just 25 mins on Beach, came back 20 mins before Paid Parking expired at 4:46pm, and received $75 CITATION ($95 if not paid within 10 days).

Sent photos of paid Parking and Citation to Tybee, politely asked to void the Citation, reasoning if someone honestly paid the Parking time, that person had no intention to do anything not legal unless didn't know, paid attention, etc due to being a Tourist, then a "Warning" should be given, not Citation (as only meant for deliberate violation). Request declined!

We really made BIG mistake this “single time” since many times in the past we always went to Hilton Head Island (visited Savannah 4 times and only went to Tybee this time) even though Georgia residents. Right after the Citation, we believed it was deliberately exploited at visitors, we decided to leave Tybee right away without spending a single more penny (had reservation at A-J Dock restaurant). As mentioned, we paid 1 hour but left the Beach after just 25 mins since the Beach was smelly, shallowed, the farthest ends of the piers were not in water at the time because they were short, etc.

We’ll continue go to Hilton Head (free parking, clean Beach, showers, more upscale, etc) and similar advice to anyone visiting the Savannah surroundings and want a Beach. This one-time mistake (visiting Tybee Island), for us, would mean never ever again with Tybee!

What's the Appeal

By David C |

Cheap hotels, cheesy retail, no beach views. We drove out to see Savannah's beach. It has all the class of a county fair, and we still didn't see the beach.

Be warned

By Diana L |

If you like paying exorbitant parking fees to go Anywhere on this island including the tacky shops & restaurants, this place is for you. It’s a tourist trap.

Nice Vacation Beach

By Kathy P |

This is a nice family oriented beach. The North side of the beach is the nicest part of the beach. The sand is nicer and not as gritty with shells. The only draw back is the entire beach is pay to park, so be prepared.

Good beach for a tranquil walk

By deleslie1956 |

Beach is well-kept and beautiful. Great for bird watching. Very clean. Enjoyed finding ghost crabs and seeing pelicans.

Nice beach to visit for a few hours....

By Globetrotters |

It's a huge beach with a wide shoreline. It's only 3 miles long, so you can actually walk it's full length if you are seeking some great beach exercise.

It's a VERY laid back environment. There are NO restaurants or pubs directly along the shoreline. (One I saw near the pier called Fannie's, but I didn't try it... they're across the street/parking from the beach)
There's only the fast food area and stand alone bar area inside of the pier/pavilion.

During COVID, its not an inexpensive or easy island to access, if you're staying in Savannah. There are no longer any shuttle options to/from the island. It's $3.50/hour to park at meters. Uber/Lyft will run you about $60 roundtrip for economy ride.
There are limited rideshare drivers in the area, so it's not unusual to have to wait about 20 minutes for a driver to make their way back towards Tybee for your return to Savannah, AFTER you get assigned a driver.

I'm glad we visited, but there's not really any attraction of interest for us to return....Lyft driver did mention rave reviews about the Crab Shack seafood/ dining options😉

Busy beaches that charge for parking

By kevin s |

Two beaches you can go to, North and South. North is a little more quiet with bathrooms, changing rooms, and restaurants. South beach is crazy busy and is by the hotels and condos. Both will be about $14 to park for 3 hours. We like North beach much better.

Nice beach

By Judie L |

The beach was clean. There was some debris washed up from the ocean, but that is to be expected at this time of year. It was not crowded. Very enjoyable.

Absolutely love this beach!

By LisaOhio |

Stayed on Tybee Island during a vacation visit to Savannah, and I loved it! Ended up spending more time on the beach than in Savannah. It's a very clean beach, no seaweed, not really any litter, great waves, nice pier with a pavilion. I was staying at a hotel within walking distance, so I didn't have to deal with finding parking. Good restaurants and cute shops near the beach as well. I ate at Pier 16, Fannies, and Lighthouse Pizza during my stay and they were all good. Unlike some of the prior comments, I didn't notice any police combing the beach.

Way too busy, no where to park

By mikki777 |

We drove all the way there from a visit to Savannah, only to spend 45 minuets looking for parking or more and going back to our hotel. What a waste. We tried to park in the many public / paid spaces throughout near the pier and otherwise on side streets. NOTHING avail. We got sick of circling, waiting on people ahead of us to get a space from someone still packing their car where you can't get around them. So one time we even waited 15 minutes to move one car space! Never got to the beach. I did jump out of the car during the wait to see what it looked like. Crowded, that is. And at least the time of day we were there, there just wasn't much by way of beach space / sand so everyone is very close together. (Was it high tide? Not sure.) But no thanks. I guess we are more of the Hilton Head Island type beach people where it's calmer. That's where we'd gone to Savannah from. And you pay for resort parking for the week in HHI which includes parking at beaches.

Not a White Sand Beach like the Gulf Beaches in Florida

By Homeschool_Mom_Patti |

This beach was crowded on an August Saturday even though it was cloudy and the sun barely shown. It was beautiful in its own way in spite of its darker and courser sand. There were life guards, code enforcers patrolling the beach (even gave a ticket to the group next to us for having glass on the beach), surfers, fishers, and even dolphins swimming back and forth. The large pier offers a great view of the sunset, has a bar that's open during COVID, and public restrooms. There is plenty of parking that cost $3.50 per hr. There are bridges over the dunes at almost every block. It was jellyfish season, but everyone was still enjoying the water and no jellyfish were sighted. The sad part about this beach is that leashed pets are not allowed even at sunset.

A must visit

By Mobile585015 |

This place is awesome. We have been several times, the light house is a good afternoon thing to do. The beach is awesome. The waves from the water was wonderful. Would recommend a visit.

Nice beach

By ThreeLittleBirdsIL |

We stayed on the island so we could walk to the beach and the locals are not welcoming to visitors. The beach was nice and the pier area was what you would expect. We saw a porpoise in the ocean from the beach which was unexpected.

We love it here, but the parking is expensive.

By Stephanie H |

We LOVE Tybee. It’s clean, the beaches are wide and open, and it’s very rarely packed. I take one star away because of how ridiculous the parking situation is and no pets on the beach. It’s $3.50 and hour and you have to pay EVERY WHERE YOU GO. The city drives around all day looking for expired meters and they will ticket you. For such a lovely island. This is a huge detractor. But- we still go. Lol.

Meh

By 2TravelLuvers |

The beach was decent. They have a pavilion where music plays all day and you can purchase ice cream, alcohol, and food. We don't necessarily need to return.

Never returning

By Lynn |

Almost 3 hours stuck in traffic trying to get here. Reservations made in September of 2022 for an April 2023 trip at River's End Campground. Finally got here to check in only to find out that we were not getting the site type we reserved. Went to the North Beach on Tybee Island to find parking is $4 an hour and your initial base fee is $8 for 2 hours. Ended up on buying a 2 day parking pass at the office of the campground and displayed it on the dashboard as directed. Came back to the vehicle to leave after spending a couple of hours on the beach to find a parking ticket for $40 under the wiper blade. Now we are obviously not from the area as we have tags from a different state. We were told that the "dates" have to be visible. What?!?! Tybee Island you have lost our business for sure! This was our third visit here and it will be our last. This was the trip from hell. Great job of turning your tourists away Tybee! Definitely not a relaxing trip. Never returning!

Not my favorite

By Tricia |

Public beach was expansive, but sand was covered with sea shells which made it rough to walk on. Pier was nice with a cool breeze.

Wow… not impressed…overrated

By Michael C |

I was very unimpressed by Tybee island and don’t see a need to ever return. The beach and town felt junky. Seek elsewhere.

RV Parking Beware

By Fred M |

RV’s Beware. So we went for the day to Tybee and parked at the beach lot in our 20 ft RV which we parked far to the north end so as not to disturb any cars. Our RV fit nicely in a regular spot and regardless there were not more than 20 cars in the lot. What we missed on the way in was a small sign that said no RV parking, did not matter what size. I paid the $16 and thought all was good. Got back to our RV and found a ticket for $90. There were no other signs other than the small one at the entrance that we missed. I believe they could have minimally put a small warning sticker on the payment kiosk or other signs in the parking lot area Seems like the parking attendants lay in wait and then pounce on vehicle when you leave. No sympathy from administration even though our RV was small and they called it a motor coach. I was happy to spend money at their restaurants and stores until I got the $90 surprise. WON’T BE GOING BACk

Tybee Island Vacation

By Supper Time Tennessee |

My first time bringing the family to Tybee Island. We used VRBO to rent a house for the week. We stayed on the north side of the island near the lighthouse. The north side of the beach is less crowded. The beach itself is most enjoyable late in day during low tide. I was surprised at how early business close on the island. The North Beach Bar and Grill was within walking distance from our house. It closed around 8pm every night. I was also surprised at the lack of fresh seafood on several restaurant menus. Also, be prepared to pay for parking, which you’ll have to do If you drive any where on the island and park.

First Time

By tripboundGa |

Restaurants closed early, so we decided to drive down to the beach, which was a great choice! The beach wasn't crowded at all.

Don't go to Tybee Island - warning - parking is s SCAM.

By magicwebsolutions |

The city makes its money by giving tickets to visitors. I wish I had googled it before we went - It cost us a $45 plus parking ticket. I wouldn't mind paying for parking but we felt scammed by the city. They have parking in front of the stores but no signs whatsoever saying there is NO FREE PARKING or you have to buy a parking pass. When we called the city to complain about our ticket they said they have parking kiosks around town. If there were any signs you had to buy a parking permit. Last year they made almost a half million dollars on parking ticket alone.

We will never go back to such rip off town.

Great walking beach!

By DebiandLarry |

Clean, wide beach - firm sand - great for walking. Plenty of clean restrooms, nicely spaced out in the parking area.

Amazing place! Don’t listen to the bad reviews!

By Katie B |

We stayed here for a week in the beginning of June 2022 at an Airbnb rental with a private beach. We had a great time! Parking is a mess, so definitely rent a place that comes with parking, and then rent bikes to get around everywhere. Bikes are cheap to rent here and they deliver and pick them up for you. It’s a small island with a lot to do, and biking is definitely the best way to see it. My kids liked North Beach and the Pier because the waves were fun there, but I preferred the quiet beach at the Savannah Beach and Racquet Club. The weather was perfect and the water was so warm. There is an abundance of wildlife here because of the diverse ecosystem. We swam with wild dolphins who just came right up to us, saw a nesting leatherback sea turtle, lots of fishing ships, sharks, and stingrays. Definitely go to Salt Island and Huc A Poos to eat, but good luck finding anywhere that serves breakfast! The Crab Shack was overpriced and the food was terrible, so you can skip that place. The closest Walmart and good grocery store is in Whitemarsh Island, about ten minutes away, and there’s a movie theater there, too. Definitely check out Savannah, which is about a twenty five minute drive away. The trolleys in the historic district are the best way to see that city. I’ve been to a lot of beach communities, and this was by far one of my favorite ones. I was nervous after reading all the reviews, but it’s beautiful, the water was clear, the sun was shining every day, it was the perfect temperature, and the water was warmer than the gulf. I’ve never seen so many dolphins. We saw at least fifty while we were there and they get very close to the shore. The best place to see the wildlife is on the very north end of the island. You can access it by bike or walking down the Polk St entrance to the beach.

Nice Beach

By loves2travelandmore |

It was too cold and windy today to walk the beach, but we saw it from the pier and a couple of access points. The beach is fairly wide and level and has a good sand. It is not rocky. I did not see many shells from our vantage point. A couple of very large cargo ships were exiting the Savannah River. Bathrooms were available at the pier. Parking is metered throughout the town and can be done with coins, credit cards, or via a phone app.

Too many souvenir shops and even things for sale

Great beach!

By shannonp29709 |

This is a top notch beach. It has paved parking, changing rooms and real restrooms! I’m from South Carolina and our beaches do not have any of this! The beach is clean and well maintained.

Tybee beach is horrible

By homeplace |

don't go to Tybee beach. Horrible beach. Fined for having a small dog on a leash. just horrible. overcrowded. pier is terrible.

Nice place to spend the day as well as big bucks to park your vehicle.

By low-maintenance-57 |

I am so glad that I requested a free tour guide book for Tybee. My husband and I went to Middle Beach because parking was right there as well as an outdoor shower as shown in the book. The beach itself was clean, free from debris. The only gripe I have is that it cost $4 an hour to park our vehicle! My sister warned me about the whole "pay to park" no matter where you are on the island. I personally think it's a disgrace. The powers that be should be grateful for tourists bringing money into their town through the stores and restaurants and not charge these fees.

Depressing and run-down.

By Opinionated Woman |

A ratty collection of dingy t-shirt shops, low end beer joints and lots of stoned looking teens. My advice is not to bring your kids to this place.

Why Tybee Island Sucks

By Midshiptiger1015 |

Tybee island was nice, or so I thought. We were essentially harassed with citations. It is utterly ridiculous. A parking citation for a parking lot not even labeled. Also a citation for having a certified service animal on the beach. I will personally never visit this place again in my lifetime. I did not enjoy, and would give this island negative ratings if possible. Savannah (the city right over) is very nice and fun. I would recommend going on a ghost tour. But DO NOT go to Tybee Island unless you want to be fined out of the ass. It is one of the most absurd things I have ever witnessed.

Family- Friendly beach

By Shelby H |

Access to the beach is available via a verity of boardwalks. There is no free parking, so be prepared to pay for Tybee parking. Clean beach and everyone respected and kept a safe distance.

Wide sand, gentle waves

By Dbornak |

North Beach is beautiful and peaceful. Only the little science center and one restaurant across the parking lot. Long deck and a gazebo on the way to the sand. Parking is not exorbitant compared to crowded cities. A little tough to find a spot but worth it. Very peaceful and thank goodness no noisy radios or loose dogs whose owners think they can do no wrong. Saw some comments about no RV parking not even small ones - which is common sense really. (One reason we’re considering a dingy when we get our C-class!). South Beach a bit more crowded like a destination beach with little stores and restaurants. We never made it to the other beaches but this island is very pretty and the waves are so small it’s quite easy going. Containers ships do pass by, as near other port cities but they are practically drifting and totally quiet. I would definitely make this trip again, and it is a lovely day trip from a week in Savannah.

Parking problem

By Debbie W |

Love the island but when I paid for parking at North Beach the kiosk would not let me decrease the time from 2 hours ($8) down to 1 hour which should have been $4. Probably spent 15 minutes at the most. Metered parking would be so much friendlier to out of state visitors.

Enjoy Fishing and Sunshine

By Millie I |

The beach had a great vibe with friendly people all around. However, due to the strong currents, there were many sticks on the beach. Perhaps a quick cleanup with a dozer every morning would help. The music on the pier was fantastic, and the fishing was great too. You can catch the fish, rent poles and they clean it for you at a reasonable price.

Citation fee racket!

By Zeroping |

The citation fees are ridiculous. The night we showed up to our PET FRIENDLY accommodations, we walked down the path to the beach… less than 4 feet on the sand someone drove a Polaris beach vehicle up to us and fined us for have our dog on the beach. I explained that we literally just showed up today and this the first few feet onto the beach and continued to issue us a citation. We thought, that’s annoying, expecting this mistake to cost us 25-50 dollars. Nope, $300.00! Three hundred dollars to walk a few feet onto the beach with a 14 lb dog. Looking into it, it seems most beach citations are $300. Make sure that do you do not violate one of thier many laws. It will cost you both time and money.. most likely ruining your vacation. Never going back, not recommending to any family or friends.

Tybee Island biking

By CindyMcN |

On our visit to Savannah, I took a day to ride my bike at Tybee Island. Very fun and felt very safe. Found a place to park at the beach with restrooms to start out. I went on a weekday so not a lot of traffic. Would imagine it is more busy on weekends and in summer. I also wanted to visit the Tybean coffee shop and Island Marine Center but both were closed..next time!

Time wasted in Tybee GA

By Shawn V |

Honestly, I dont get understand all the hype. Everything here is twice as much as other tourist beach areas. The parking fees are endless, and the police and "parking agents" are like vultures just waiting to pounce. Also, dont do 32 in a 30 here, the police look for anything to nail you. Relaxing, right? The beach is like most, but no shells or anything to hunt for. Ocean was dirty. Just had a storm but some say it is because of the river? We also went to Savannah, some ok shopping, old city and it was a good day. I would not return to Tybee however, time is too valuable to waste on mediocre vacation spots.

So beautiful

By 1Palmtreelover |

Beach is very clean, very safe and so beautiful. Paid parking on Tybee Island. Beach walks are lovely. Many touristy shops and ice cream parlors along the way.

Anniversary Trip

By Carl C |

For our anniversary we stop off in Tybee it’s one of my wife favorite places. Went out on pier was little windy. Walked around town checked out the shops.

Tybee beach fun

By VacayDivas |

Tybee Island beach was a nice stopping point during a family road trip in 2019. The beach was clean and even though it was summer, there was room between visitors, so it didn’t feel crowded. You can find sand dollars on the beach. The pier is nice to check out for a break from the sun, as it has a covered section. Four stars because the water quality reports sometimes fluctuate indicating the water isn’t always the cleanest.

Ticket Trap

By JT T |

Beware.
This city will ticket you for anything. The ticket price will not be low. Not kidding, check the website. Almost every amount was over $300.
I was cited for something regular people do on the beach all the time so be sure to check the website for what they deem as illegal if you absolutely must visit this mediocre beach.

Listen to the one star reviews. It's a ticket trap.

Mother Daughter Getaway

By Korky62 |

My daughter and I spent a few days on Tybee Island and had a wonderful time. I lived in Savannah when I was little and spent just about every weekend at Tybee which we called Savannah Beach. It’s funny, there were things there that I remembered as a child 50 years ago. I love Tybee in that it isn’t so commercialized. The beach itself is one of the prettiest beaches in the east coast It’s flat, has what I call ponds that have been left by the high tide that the children just love. You can walk out onto the many sand bars, but make sure you don’t go out too far when the tide is coming in. You can find many shells, sand dollars, etc. The Tybee pier is very nice and spacious. My daughter and I saw live hermit crabs, several live horseshoe crabs, many live sand dollars and a few small live sharks. We left with a bag filled with shells of all types and sizes. I can’t wait to go back again.

Nice beach vibe

By Diana R |

We visited here on a trip to Savannah. It’s an easy and beautiful drive to get there. Once we arrived, I downloaded the app to pay for parking ($4 per hour, very reasonable). We walked to the beach and just enjoyed the vibe for awhile. Definitely worth a visit.

Moon over the ocean

By Toozigoot |

We visited in January, so it wasn't crowded at all. We were on the east side and walked around to the north. A completely different feel on the north side. We loved every minute of it! A couple of days it was really foggy, which burned off between 10 and 11. There were always cargo ships to watch, or yachts once in a while. We brought back some beautiful seashells, and became "friends" with the seagulls!

Absolutely will not return!

By Brenda T |

Tybee Island is a ticket trap and their fines are outrageous! The parking fees are as much as New York City. I’ve NEVER been to a beach where a leashed dog is not allowed. The code enforcement officer was rude and on a power trip. The signage is obscure because they obviously get off on their $300 fines. Seriously, first offense, no warning and a $300 fine for walking our leashed dog onto the beach.

Worst beach on the East Coast? Maybe

By Fishin F |

I've been before and always said I would never go back, but today I was talked into going again. What a miserable place. Traffic, lack of parking, paid parking, over crowded, redneck, brown water, ugly beach. I've been to many countries and 49 states and this beach is in as bad as it gets. I love most beaches, but this beach and town are gross. Do yourself a favor and drive a few extra hours in either direction for a much better experience.

Beachy keen

By Dennis B |

My first visit to Tybee Beach won’t be my last. Very nice area. Great for walking and enjoying clean, fresh air.

We walked 2 or 3 miles for an early morning walk to the pier, which has free access to the public.

We at two meals , one at Zunzibar and the other at Pier 16. Food at each was excellent. Highly recommend both.

The townhouse we rented was good but, for us, next time, we plan to stay in Savannah instead. More to do there and Tybee is only 30 minutes away, a nice drive in itself.

Relaxing beach for the Fall of the year

By pam0357 |

This month was a great time to visit Tybee Island. We were able to find parking at a meter, which is hard to do in the summer months. We walked to the beach and the pier enjoyed the breeze, sunshine, and it was not crowded. We took pictures and the weather was a perfect 80 degrees.

Great Beach

By Brenda |

We were on South Beach and it was peaceful, not too busy with others. Fishing pier within walking distance, clean beach, lifeguards on duty and around

Bad

By carey h |

Parking is extremely expensive and totally not worth it.. We will stick w/NC beaches, all are dog friendly! Interstate 95 in SC is also horrible, pot hole city!

Good beach

By Bill K |

Great long beach. We parked in town near Center st and walked across the road to the beach. Probably close to a 1/2 hour drive from Savannah with the traffic and paid $10 to the City of Tybee for street parking.

Not going back

By Steve E |

Parking on the island is a joke. It was our first time there. We parked on the street and there were no signs stating you had to pay a fee at a place half a block away. We were there less than a half hour and got a $80 parking ticket. Seems like a bad way to promote the island. Won’t be back!

First Time Visit

By Patricia E |

This was our first time visiting Tybee Island. It has beautiful beaches. It seems to be a very popular place. It was busy for May. You must drive everywhere, including to the beach. You must pay for parking just about everywhere except a few stores and restaurants. It will be good for young people and families.

We were glad to be there during the week. Arrival on the weekend, the beaches were very packed! Time your visit accordingly. Be prepared to walk a long way and/or drive. Restaurants are all beach fare.

I was hoping better

By samy2803 |

The beach is large and looks a lot like Florida, but the sea is not as blue as Florida. Maybe we were unlucky but we found a day with a lot of wind and so we managed to enjoy the beach little.

Not dependable

By connie b |

Hugh disappointment on this beach. We stayed in savannah and wanted to go to the beach for the day. Drove to Tybee only to find out that there was no free public parking and no Dogs on the beach?!?! Tybee do better then this. You will loose tourist $$. People take there dogs on vacation! Get with the program! See you never again Tybee!

Dog Families Beware

By donna p |

To the City of Tybee island:
First of all I learned a valuable lesson, so thank you. I am in Savannah Georgia celebrating my birthday with my husband and two VERY well behaved and beloved fur babies. I made the mistake of leaving an extremely dog friendly city to see the sunset on Tybee Island (seemed like a cool thing to do). I live just outside another port city. We have some pretty great beaches that, if nothing else, allow on leash dogs during off season…and before you mention turtles, yes we have them too. I would NEVER allow my dogs to disturb their nesting, neither would any responsible owner. But since that would be nearly impossible to police, why not allow at least a small section of your (what I would assume is) lovely beach to welcome visitors who choose to travel with FAMILY MEMBERS that happen to have fur. I post this as a suggestion to you, Tybee Island, but also as a tip to my fellow dog owners….DO NOT choose Tybee as a vacation destination if you wish for your four legged companions to be a part of it. Sincerely, an upset dog owner.

Terrible Place

By Geoff K |

Terrible place, never going back. Dogs never allowed on the beach... are kids allowed???
Parking fees even on sunday are a rip off.
Visit another beach resort... hilton head is great compared to this.

Wonderful-every single time I go.

By Prezzle K |

The best time of day in when the low tide turns and starts coming in, about 1/2 hour after dead-low. The waves start picking up. Watch for "Rip Currents" always at the beach here. The sand is a fine granular white-bleached by the sunshine-and has the appearance of sugar. The beach "Width" (From water to High-tide mark) allows for folks to have a nice spot for a blanket or chair/umbrella. It should be noted there is no glass allowed on this beach. Animals are not allowed on this beach. Smoking is not allowed on this beach. Cussing and fussing-not allowed. Parking Meter Gods hate all people equally, and demand constant Tribute. Failure to render tribute is not acceptable-pay or live in shame and fear. Motels are what you expect at a beach. Sandy, soggy and dismal. If you don't take wheelbarrow full of money to spend-give away, don't go. Oh, and Tybee cops....there's a whale of a tail there now....don't speed or have any reason to have one on your case-you will eternally regret that.

Skip it!

By A A |

I have lived in the area for a decade. In my opinion Tybee Island still feels like a bad tourist trap. I have gone there to fish early in the morning only to surrounded by sunbathers and partiers by 11 am. Not a good place to fish. The fishing pier is full of people tangling lines. The restaurants are just ok yet expensive. When they are open. The Island hypes a laid back attitude. Like a scruffy Key West. The beach is just down current of the Savannah River. What ever flows out of the river ends up on the beach. I have seen some icky things on the beach. Parking is a crazy 4.00 an hour. If you can find it on a weekend. And if you can find a working parking payment kiosk. The try to make you download a third party payment app for parking. No thanks, we have enough problems with stolen data. The last thing I want is a direct line to my credit card. A parking payment violation is a whopping 80.00 dollars. No joke. 80.00 dollars for not calling and asking the government where to park because the Tybee Island system does not work. It could be blocks from where you are. Not very convenient. If I was a visiting I would pay to park for an hour, walk the beach then go south to the Golden Isles to really take in the Georgia coast. Visit St. Catherine's, Jekyll and St. Simons island. They have great history and pristine beaches. lots of privacy and clean sand. As a long term resident, this is just my opinion.

A Fading Gem

By cynthia pittman |

Quirky, multicultural, everyman's beach. Huh? Let it be known the time's are a changing. First the house prices soured. Locals who used to make up the bulk of the cottage owners are being overtaken by home gentrification-minded outsiders. Okay, a little upkeep did't hurt. BUT...the insult I encountered on a rainy day when few were visiting the beach galvanized the changing nature of the island. COME ON...$3.50 an hour for parking, near off season? Even if you are disabled -- outlandish! Not many years ago, my husband, a veteran, when asked by a reporter what he would do with money raised by his church in a nearby rural county for his benefit, he forced his usually silent voice to mumble from his wheelchair three words, "Go to Tybee." The place the poor farm boy remembered getting a chocolate malt and running freely with his kite on the beach all summer long for mere pennies. NOT NOW!

To the north, South Carolina's upscale beaches (that allow dogs) cost a fraction of that amount for parking, and to the south the same holds true for the Golden Isles.

Tybee's homeowners have a beef with overcrowding tourists. Which I understand on holidays when people park willy-nilly on their lawns. BUT just maybe they should realize that "we" have a beef with the millions of federal tax dollars that have gone into beach nourishment, repeatedly, and the new bridge being built, when the islanders consider the place "their" island, and tourists only vehicles for making money. Pun intended.

Great family beach

By Heather H |

This is a fantastic beach for families. The waves aren’t too crazy, the sand is quite nice and it’s not too crowded. You do have to pay to park but it’s only $3.50/hour.

Great Beach. It was not too hot or Too Crowded this weekend

By Jamie D |

The weather was great for the beach this weekend. We had a great time. The pier was not too crowded. The beach was not too crowded. The people on the beach were friendly.

Don’t waste your time or money

By Noah G |

No doubt the worse vacation we have ever been on. The rudest people in the country live here in Tybee Island. We’ve had slushy thrown on our car, notes left on the dash, and a very hateful “code enforcer” to give us a $300 citation for having ONE glass bottle soda on the beach. With no warning or exception.

A little too early for swimming.

By JrnyJunkie |

Although it was a little too early in the season for swimming, we stopped to see the beach. We were a bit concerned about colored foam that was lying on the beach coming in with the waves. It seem to look like soapsuds or had oiliness to it.

Lovely beach

By cspippa |

Lovely beach. Not too crowded and able to social distance without worry. Visited the beach 3x and saw dolphins twice! We were on the North end.

One that can be missed.

By Ivette R |

Disappointed. Honestly expected more based on reviews. Water brown. Town needs some updating. The nicest part was the drive to the island. Beautiful scenery. Day trip and did not stay. Won’t be back.

Disappointing

By T L |

Very nice beach area. Miles of beautiful sandy beaches. The parking is an issue as everywhere on the island you must pay to park your car. It’s not a visitor friendly community.

Vacation with Friends on Tybee Island

By Jeanette H |

Great views of the sunrise each morning from the Sandpiper Condos. Everyone was so friendly, The Lighthouse & Museum were enjoyable.

Not our best vacation

By MommamurphyFlorida |

We were really looking forward to our visit to Tybee Island. It was ok but we definitely won't be retuning. We stayed in a lovely home we rented through VRBO but going to the beach was difficult & expensive. Parking was hard to find even when we went early in the day. The beach was ok but I wasn't impressed. We went into town to walk around & get ice cream. You have to pay for a minimum of 2 hrs to park. We didn't stay 2 hrs but I guess they have to charge this. Overall not our best vacation except that we were able to be there with our family after not being able to get together during the Pandemic.

Worst Vacation Ever. To windy and cold on tybee

By Itsa t |

Was looking to have a great experience with the family but it was too windy on the beach which made it to cold to enjoy..the beach was crowded with to many people.never take a vacation during the first week of april because it rains all the time and you cant enjoy anything..

Perfect for reflection, relaxation, and a little salt-air therapy.

By Patricia |

I decided to take a spontaneous drive out to Tybee Island one evening — one of those “I just need some ocean air” moments. The timing couldn’t have been better. As the sun started to dip, the sky turned those gorgeous shades of pink, lavender, and gold that seem to melt right into the water.

The beach had that calm, end-of-day hush — a few families packing up, couples walking barefoot near the tide, and a handful of people just sitting quietly, watching the waves roll in. The air was warm with a soft breeze, and the sound of the water felt like an instant reset after a busy day.

I didn’t stay long, maybe an hour, but it was enough to feel grounded again. There’s something about Tybee in the evening — peaceful, unpretentious, and somehow intimate even with strangers nearby.

If you ever need a quick escape or a moment to clear your mind, that short drive and the view at sunset are absolutely worth it.

Granddaughter wanted the beach

By Ronald G |

Beach was clean. Parking was pricy. 8am to 8pm requires payment; Sure seemed everywhere from main road to the beach was pay parking. Pay via kiosk and not all kiosks were working "network problem" was error. $8.00 for 2 hours; $12.00 for 4 hours.

Nice and Quiet (late August)

By kmoore007 |

We visited in August after most schools were back in session, so it was nice and quiet. Even so, there’s always one, right? A sparsely crowded beach and the smoking, loud booming speaker group of ladies plopped right down in front of us. :-/. Not the best for shelling and my daughter got stung by a jelly fish. But for walking and just laying around was very nice. Seems like every parking spot on the island is pay-to-park. But its not outrageous rates and understandable they have to do this on such a small island. Plenty of public access with nice boardwalks over the dunes. There was a bar on the North side we were on you could walk to, but make sure to have your license with you or you won’t get served!

Low key & friendly locals

By helpinghands001 |

This secluded little island is the hidden gem of the east coast. We have been to all the major beaches for over 20 years along east coast and as my 27 year old daughter said - I think this is my favorite mom!

Son of a beach

By Linwood KC |

It had sand, ocean and a pier. Beautiful day. Watched the net fishermen off the pier. You must pay to park ANYWHERE on tybee

Don’t waste your time or money

By hawksnest185 |

Tybee island is run downed and the entire place smells of trash which you can see piled up everywhere. The beaches aren’t great and the restaurants all serve the same greasy bland food after you wait for 2 hours and pay a fortune. Everything is closed and random tourists attractions open only a couple days per week.
It’s not a place to waste your time, energy, or money. Everything seems so old and not kept up properly or updated. There’s a difference between local flare and just junk.

Some people love it, but it definitely wasn't for us

By 35adlp |

We went to Tybee for a quick day trip from Savannah. We don't frequently go to Tybee and usually go to Hilton Head Island, St. Simons or Jekyll Island for a nearby beach. We got there and spent 40 minutes circling a dirt parking lot to find a space. While waiting for a family to pack up their car and leave the space we got flipped the bird twice by other cars behind us. We pay to park and walk to the beach which was pretty much all crunched shells. You couldn't find a space to even sit a chair b/c it was so crowded. We ended up renting chairs and an umbrella from the rental guys for $50. The rental guys were rude and the chairs were broken and rusted. The beach was all crunched shells so painful to walk, extremely crowded, lots of vaping and I don't believe anyone over the age of 18 wasn't fully covered in tattoos. The bathroom facilities at north beach were gross and crowded. We left after only 30 minutes after renting chairs for the full day and paying for 4 hours of parking. Some people love it. I don't see us returning unless it was off season. We did have lunch and it was really good.

Ok beach

By Ellie Wilk |

It was a little weird being at an empty beach, but I'm from Florida, and the beaches are always packed. However this was a nice beach.

Tybee

By Indychick66 |

Loved watching the waves, the surfers, sunsets & moonrises, the dolphins. Watching the changing tide is amazing. Cons were the loud cussing & overly loud music from people around the pier. We're not saints but it's just a downer to hear all that when what you go to hear is the natural sounds of the beach. The biting bugs are vicious by afternoon, drive us inside even with bug spray & covered up.

Beautiful Beach - cheap $30/day chairs/umbrellas - much cheaper than Hilton Head

By Todd S |

Beautiful Beach - cheap $30/day chairs/umbrellas - much cheaper than Hilton Head. if you are close to the Pier then easy walking distance to the business district with great shops and restaurants.

Not very Welcoming

By Inspire09661282578 |

Tybee isn't welcoming to blacks families nor black people they don't want us coming to enjoy the beach Parents please don't allow your children to visit this beach without you there I live in Savannah I'm visiting here I am from Savannah Thanks

If you like thugs, it’s for you.

By Ashton C |

I’ve been coming to Tybee for years and it’s always been a great place to bring a family. Unfortunately this trip will be our last time coming to the island. On 4/21/23 hundreds of thugs from Atlanta came to the island and we couldn’t even bring our children out on the streets. From street racing to police sirens, the place turned into a ghetto overnight. The morning of 4/22 was unreal, trash and flyers thrown EVERYWHERE. This community need to demand that this never happens again. Not the family atmosphere that it used to be anymore. Don’t bring your kids here.

Harassed by police with girlfriend

By Max B |

If you are anything other than a bumbling passive oaf with three kids and a wife you hate, this is not the beach for you. Absolutely draconian police officers patrol 24/7. Great if you’re the above demographic. Awful if you’re not.

Nice beach

Clean beach with clean restrooms and clean showers. Lots of shells on the beach. Wasn't crowded at all....

Out of State Tourists Beware!

By Sherpa19737791483 |

Stopped at this beach on our way back home, never having been there. Apparently there is a sign upon entry to the island that we missed, saying you have to pay to park no matter where you go on the island. We pulled down 11th Street and found an open legal parking space, no meters, no signs indicating payment was needed. We saw a sign that said no dogs allowed on the beach. We had our dog, so we just took a quick walk down the wooden access to see what the beach looked like. We were there less than 2 minutes, came back and found a $55.00 parking citation for "No Receipt" on our car. I called the next day to explain we didn't realize we were supposed to pay to park and asked if I could appeal the ticket or just be charged for an hour, in fairness. I told her I had a dash cam which would show me being in that spot under 3 minutes. I was told there was no court hearing or any way to appeal, and I just needed to pay the ticket. I definitely felt targeted with the out-of-state license plate. I will pay the ticket, but will never visit this island again if this is the way they treat tourists. I feel sorry for the people who own beach rentals out there. They just lost what would have been a good customer and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Anniversary getaway was perfect

By SallyLynKY |

Haven’t spent time in Tybee since I was a student at Georgia Southern. Husband and I decided to celebrate our anniversary here and we had a laid back, shrimp-filled, sunshiny time. Rented a place to stay on the beach through VRBO. A bit of a splurge, but worth it. Walked on the beach, saw a stingray get caught off the pier, shopped at some of the stores - but only bought a souvenir Christmas ornament - and just enjoyed the beautiful beach and the warm breezes. April is the perfect time to come. So quiet, not crowded and just perfect.

Beautiful, Clean Beach

By Academics17 |

I loved my visit to Tybee Island Beach in Oct. The weather was perfect, the beach was not crowded and it was within minutes of our beach house. We walked everywhere that weekend. I highly recommend a visit after high peak season.

Very nice beach with good views

By Boat-Captain |

We visited the beach in February when the crowds were very small. The weather was good and we enjoyed the scenery. We were staying in North Beach and there was a place to grab a drink and a bite. The beach area was clean and well maintained. We would have liked if there was a designated area allowing walking of dogs. We did not have to worry about parking, but it could be a concern for those driving to the island.

Beautiful Beach

Beautiful Beach! Came here last year 2022 for the 4th of July. Clear water really enjoyed my time. Sad I couldn’t bring my dog. But the restaurants and other services were great.

Fall getaway

By tdm58 |

Visited October 2019. What’s 2 hrs and 30!mins away from Boston on jet blue. Tybee island and beach. The beach was perfect to walk. Overdid it first day but pleasant and peaceful. They have swings to rest. Shells galore. Was a great time.

Tybee Beach

By Steven S |

The beaches on Tybee are quite beautiful with deep stretches of white sand with sand dunes as their backdrop. The water is reasonably clear, suitable for swimming and snorkeling. Generally, the slope from shallow to deep water is gradual, so the kids can have a wonderful, safe time too. If you don't stay at a facility on the beach where parking is free, plan to pay $3.50 per hour during your time you spend at the beach. Also, you are not allowed on the sand dunes!

TYBEE ISLAND $47 PARKING VIOLATION ROBBERY. DON'T GO HERE. GO TO ONE OF THE OTHER 99 MILES OF SHORELINE IN GEORGIA

By lisahartnett |

I would give four out of five circles based on the beach. Long enough beach. Nice enough sand. Pleasant pier, which was free, and is open 'til 11pm, at least in the summer. And a nice large gazebo-space at the pier with picnic tables to rest in the shade or have a snack.

HOWEVER: WATCH OUT! METER VIOLATIONS ARE $47!!!! YES! AND THE CITY IS SNEEKY-SLIMEY IN THAT THEY DO NOT POST SIGNAGE THAT IS OBVIOUS RE: PAY TO PARK. There should be signage that tells you that. And the pay-to-park boxes ALSO HAVE NO SIGNAGE! It's just a small, black box, only the size of a parking meter, and we walked right by it and did not know the public parking was NOT free. Came back a couple of hours later to a $47 parking ticket! That's outrageous! Even if there all day, 8 hours, at $3.50 per hour (also a rip-off), the most it would be is $28. THE COST OF THE PARKING VIOLATION SHOULD NOT BE MORE THAN THE COST OF THE PARKING ITSELF FOR ALL DAY. WHY AND HOW DID THE CITY COME UP WITH $47 FOR VIOLATION?! THEN, TO TOP IT OFF, THE CADS WON'T EVEN PICK UP THE PHONE AT THEIR OFFICE BECAUSE THEY KNOW THEY ARE RIPPING PEOPLE OFF!

It a Beach!

By CruisinNana2015 |

We drove 15 hours from Missouri to go to the beach. This beach is about 20 minutes from the downtown area. It is a straight shot from downtown Broad street to the highway. Beach goers will have to pay $3.50 and hour for beach parking. Look for the parking stands, They will only use quarters or credit cards. After paying the receipt will need to be place in the wind shield of your car. We were able to get a space right in front of the bathrooms next to the walkway to the beach. The beach was clean and the water was clear. Chairs and umbrellas are available for rent. There are bathrooms, however they are beach bathrooms and are not as clean. They are very functional but with out ventilation. Again we drove 15 hours, so we were glad to get to a beach.

Quick trip to Tybee to recharge

By Lu Lew |

Sunday at Tybee island beach was refreshing.
We wanted an opportunity to spend some time at the shore and enjoy the ocean.
The experience differs based on which location you choose. The higher the street number (closer to the action) i.e rotunda with a live DJ ,food etc the greater the activity... and crowds. We went to the less populated area to recharge.😉

Love this place but the parking is expensive and no dogs allowed on the beach

By Stephanie H |

I WANT to give tybee 5 stars, but there are two major things that hold this island back. 1. Parking and 2. No dogs on the beach. The island is great in every other way. Big beautiful beaches that are well maintained, decent food, plenty of housing options. But the parking is $3.50 an hour and you have to pay almost everywhere you go. Tybee is also pretty dog friendly, letting your furry friend in to bars and almost every restaurant. But not the beach. If they would section of just a small portion and even charge for admittance- that would be a step in the right direction. Instead, the locals fight really hard to keep this from happening. Sighting rare birds and the sea turtle population as being threatened by allowing dogs on the beach. Meanwhile, they have a large feral cat population that runs rampant on the island. Our pup would love nothing more then to lay on a towel under the umbrella while we sit on the beach or to fetch in the ocean. Oh well.

Meh

By Road217398 |

First off this is a pay-to-park area which means not just the beach, it means everywhere. So if you want to stop and shop or eat here you have to pay to park. I can understand the beach, maybe, but to have to find parking then pay a meter just to eat at a restaurant seems ridiculous and the local PD is watching hard so don't think you can get away with anything, they roam the street and parking areas all day. The beach was ok, pretty clean, area was full of 50-70 year old retirees so... Was a nice experience for the family but will find another beach area to visit next time.

Great Place

By Cory |

The day I was there was overcast and cloudy but still had a nice trip. It is a pretty island town with lots of shops and restaurants. There were a lot of people but the beach wasn't crowded at all. We spent several hours just walking on the beach and enjoying the ocean breeze. You do have to walk a bit from the car to the beach but it wasn't a problem. It is a short trip from Savannah to; only about 30 minutes.

Tybee Treachery-NO PARKING!

By MightyPotanka |

Came here to warm up and scout it out for future visits. Will NOT be coming back. People are pleasant, but be aware of parking trolls. We got a stiff $80 parking ticket for “missing” the sign posted as you arrive on island that you must pay for parking everywhere. We came in after 10 pm following a long day of driving and certainly missed the “illuminated warning sign” along the road. I see that these tickets have been an ongoing issue since at least 2010. I will repeat the warning:
ALL PARKING NOT ON PRIVATE PROPERTY MUST BE PAID FOR.
In our case, we could have stayed an extra night for the amount of the fine, supporting local businesses, but now, with that sour taste in our mouths, we will never even return.

Who Does Not Love a Walk on The Beach

By SS_Forever |

Was in area to visit the Fort and Tybee Lighthouse so did not prepare for a day on the beach, no worry you can just roll up those pant legs and pop off those shoes and just walk. We arrived end of the day and was able to catch a open parking spot close to the walk over. Bathrooms up on the pier area.

I did have a bag with a beach towel which we sat on the sand and took a chilled for a while.

Everyone was friendly but be careful next thing you know you have walked a long way from your car :)

Make sure you have a ride home set up prior if ubering, hard to find one.

By Marc F |

Would have been 5 stars if you could get off the island in the evening. During busy hours there are hardly any drivers available from Uber or Lyft. Also was told it has something to do with pay and it not being worth drivers picking ppl up from Tybee, so heads up. Look for a guy named Luke who drives a van (dunes hotel/inn had his card), if you can find a ride. Still make take time but at least you can get home lol. We got lucky after 2 hours of waiting. Otherwise Pier 16 as well as Dakota our server, were wonderful, the little shops are nice, as well as the beach. The Dolphin tour right before the island with ‘Derek’s’ was great. Rent a bike or golf cart and ride around. The island overall is nothing out of this world but a nice getaway for a day if visiting.

Tybee island and Hilton head beach

By Kayla L |

Be sure to get there really early. There is not enough parking, or enough bathrooms, or enough showers. We did book a memorial day trip so we expected it to be packed but you would think the states would also know this and be able to accommodate everyone. We visited both Tybee Island and Hilton head beaches.

Family type beach area

By MominOC |

Plenty of parking here at this time of the year. Family type area with rentals of gear available. We preferred the southern part of the island for the beach and shell collecting.

Bad taste in my mouth

By Carol O |

Nudity laws should be enforced. Small children shouldn't have top see thongs everywhere on the beach. That shouldn't be a part of family fun. They need a separate area that they can prance around in that way. Very vulgar and disrespectful to entire families. Will not return

Poor

By Dani |

Visited the beach for about 8 min. We did park with out paying but literally looked at the beach and went to the BR walked back from the beach where officer DLB (no courtesy to give a name, this was on the ticket) continued to write a parking ticket after explaining we stopped to use the BR. Called the parking ticket office where they proceeded to tell us had we payed for parking after he wrote the ticket as a common courtesy they would have avoided the fine. Officer DLB was very rude and not helpful at all and apparently could have explained this to us had he chosen per the parking office

Location is everything

By razayes |

Depending on what area you are makes a huge difference as to the cleanliness and crowd type. Definitely don’t recommend the south beach area if you are over the age of 25. South end crazy busy and very dirty and can be very difficult to find parking. Would definitely not return. North end is more laid back it’s like another world for sure.

NBA visits Tybee Island Beach

By No Boundaries Adventures |

Tybee Island Beach is about 30 minutes from the Savannah Historic District. There are 5 miles of beachfront, as well as the famous Tybee Island Light Station. Tybee Beach is also family friendly and clean. The water was warm and easy for wading. There is access to public restrooms near the pay parking. Tybee Island also has access to shopping and a variety of restaurants. This should be a must-stop for anyone visiting Savannah.

Great for a friends weekend away- not family friendly

By Becca |

We were there for a long friends weekend away, which this was great for. If I were looking for a weeklond beach trip I'd head to Charleston or Florida. You could probably hit most of the stuff to do and even a lot of the dive bars in a couple days. The waters were warm and mostly calm, not super clear though- it was just right for a day or two getaway but not a big adventurous beach trip.

You do have to pay to park literally everywhere on the island, even in random grassy side street areas. Granted, parking was FAR cheaper than what we were used to back home so that was a nice surprise, but as we found, other nearby islands you didn't have to pay to park at all and parking was way less of a hassle.

It was very easy to rent chairs and umbrellas, and we felt safe leaving our things. The facilities on the north end of the beach were pretty nice with plenty of changing areas and places to wash your feet. The big touristy end, however, I didn't see anywhere to hose off the sand which was super surprising, maybe it was somewhere not too obvious? The shaded pavillion was nice, but very basic food options. It was nice to have somewhere nearby and free to take a break from the sun.

We didn't know a lot about the island, but were surprised that it didn't seem to be too family friendly at all. If you weren't into drinking I honestly don't know what else you'd do. The beaches were a bit too crowded to want to stay in the ocean your whole trip. Everything seemed to be alcohol-based, there were few true restaurants and even those heavily promoted their alcohol.

If you happen to come when it rains, there's really not going to be much to do. We stayed off the island, and even though the drive was tiring after a long day at the beach the off island hotels all seemed far nicer than the much more expensive super touristy ones on the island.

Overall, it was a great couple day getaway for us. Exactly what we were looking for, just an affordable, accessible weekend beach trip. I wouldn't plan a big vacation around Tybee though. It would make a great pit stop on a tour of other Georgia and South Carolina beaches.

Nit the Time to Visit!

By Tim W |

This is not a good time to visit this island! I guess because of the crowds following the pandemic it is impossible to get in most anywhere for dinner.
Due to a 2 hour wait the first night we decided to try and do carry out the next night.
Most places we called did not answer the phone. The ones who did said they were so overwhelmed inside they were not taking to go orders.
In this wonderful place for fresh seafood? We would up getting pizza!
I’m not blaming the restaurants.
They can’t help that they are overwhelmed.
Just saying this summer is probably not a good time to visit this island..

beautiful

By bandckey |

the beach was great, the water was perfect and the weather was lovely. like the No pets allowed rule

THE BEST!

By Rae C |

I love this beach. On the side of the pavilion by the hotels are mostly families. On the side closer to town seemed to be "younger people". You can rent beach chairs, umbrellas & even tables right on the beach & it's a short walk up into town.

Do not visit

By Sadie R |

Worst travel experience I’ve ever had. There are no stores to shop at only 5 surf shops that are exactly the same and I felt like everything was dirty. The people, restaurants.. the overall cleanliness of the island was disgusting. The beach was alright, the sand was like laying on cement. I will never be returning to Tybee Island, very disappointed.

Solo at Tybee Island

By Jamie R |

I like Tybee beach, not to crowded. There were lots of shells to pick from. Good wide beach. Dunes are large and protect the homes and condos. Weather was perfect, not to hot. Water was warm. I love the swings along time beach. Just the right touch!

Citations are Borderline Extortion

By Trinity716 |

Gonna cut to chase…
Avoid this beach and the constant lurking and harassment by beach citation officers. Arrived the night before, woke up first thing next morning to enjoy a week long vacation with family and was cited within 15 min of being on beach for opening what was 1 of 2 glass bottles we had packed in small cooler. I am not contesting fact that I broke beach rules….however the citing officer was very quick to pull his citation booklet and shut down any possibility of giving me opportunity to walk less than 200 yards to our condo to remove the glass bottles from beach. Could have been quick, easy fix but obviously this is a city “racket” and easy way to gain $300, yes $300 in easy revenue from families trying to vacation and get away from stress and anxieties of everyday jobs. Was there with two other couples and our revenue will never return to this town. Word for city manager, you are driving good, hard-working people away from your town….may want to re-evaluate how small infractions like this are handled. By the way….you may also want to tell your beach officers to ease up a little. Saw them literally harass a group of teenagers because they were flying kites, yes kites. Gonna leave the details up for imagination but not so sure flying kite on beach is that big of deal….but apparently your officers do.

Wonderful and Relaxing

By KevinC |

We just returned from a 9 night trip to this wonderful island. It was very relaxing and pretty low key. The beaches are amazing and great for walks and running. We stayed on North Beach where the Savannah River meets the Atlantic and have never seen so many dolphins. They were active all day every day and occasionally did some jumping for is. It was very cool to see. It was also enjoyable to watch the ships come and go to/from the port in Savannah. There are a few good restaurants on the island and several 10-20 minutes towards Savannah.

We will definitely return to this terrific island and beach town!

Enjoyable time with Grayline at Tybee Island Beach

By mariedesjardins |

I visited Tybee island and its main beach with Grayline from Savannah in August. Would’ve liked a little more time at the beach, but had a nice time walking along the shore. There is a beach bar for snacks and drinks for beach goers. It was overcast in some spots and sunny in other. There are bathrooms onsite. It’s a long stretch of golden sand with some tide pools and rocks. I didn’t see any baby see turtles at this beach, but if you dig holes please fill them in before you leave so 🐢 don’t get trapped when heading to the ocean.

find a parking meter

By michelle s |

Let me start with the Beach is amazing. But buyer beware! when entering the island there is a sign about parking, it was the ONLY one we saw. It is all city pay to park, you will see a few parking meters and the # sticks that have the clearly marked pay stations. When we got to the parking lot there is no clearly marked pay station and quite frankly by the time we drove thru town enjoying the sights we had forgotten and didnt really look either. we enjoyed about 1/2 hour on the beach with about 12 other people and returned to the car only to find an 80.00 parking ticket. this is a bit ridiculous. it was a Wednesday in late February in the middle of the day and 6 other cars in this huge parking lot. so clearly we weren't hogging a spot in the busy off season. Did we deserve a parking ticket, yes, we did but 80.00 is over the top. I can't write anything else because we were so upset we did not do anything else on the Island.

Beach with waves

Beach with waves, some people were surfing. It's water is not so clear, but it looks very cute to spend a day at the beach in summer, it must be good fun!

A wonderful day-trip to Tybee Island

By Rokesly |

Tuesday, December 14, 2021
Tybee Island is about a 30-minute ride from the historic district. The public beach was absolutely beautiful and immaculate. It was still warm and sunny in December during my visit.
There were a few runners and strollers. Pets are not allowed. No swimmers just seashells and seagulls. I was on the south beach area and walked a few miles alone with my thoughts and appreciation for my surroundings. I had a late lunch at Fannie’s a local spot in the area. I bought a couple souvenirs at a few beach shops still open for business in the off-season and waited for my driver to come back for me. He said it is usually crazy traffic and very busy during the high season months.
Very happy I had a chance to visit this beautiful area. Due to the pandemic the lighthouse area was closed.

Greedy Town

By Bob S |

Very upset as a 100% disabled Vet that this town would charge for Handicapped parking first place I have been in this country where they charge for it, I believe that this town is just a greedy place where the mayor has the control to charge handicapped people to park

Beach and restaurants

By Mary Llewellyn |

Dogs are not allowed on the beach this is an injustice if a dog can be in a casino why not outside in nature on the beach the restaurants were great and would love to recommend

Fun & convenient to downtown historical Savannah. So much to do here & the stores on the strip are actually reasonably priced. Great eats & beautiful scenery.

Beautiful spacious beach. Great place for families. There is a lighthouse that makes for beautiful pictures, dolphin sightings, surfing, etc!!

Tybee Island Sucks

By Larry D |

Parking Prices are BS... It’s not Even Worth It (All I Wanted To Do Was See and Walk the Beach a Lil as Well as Get a Bite To Eat... and Had Zero Interest In the junk Shops On Tibby but Then just Said Screw All That... Like I Said... Wasn’t Even Worth It)

You won’t Get a red cent from me for that dumbsh*t

Bad

By a S |

This beach is trash and has so much potential to be more…. The music on the peer was horrible, the worst late of it all was the wash station… there were none!!! Have you ever had to wash off 6 sandy kids in a disgusting porta potty?? You don’t know if you’re stepping in or or water … I have then they have the nerve to have signs saying don’t bathe in the sink …. Yeah right!! Trash beach they are more concerned about collecting money for the parking spots and keep black college kids off “their” beach ( I’ve lived here for 34 years I know) don’t come it’s worth the gas to drive a little further to Florida.

A GREAT BEACH

By shawn b |

We spent several days at the beach and it was clean, and in some of the areas there wasn't life guards, which was fine, but it was still patrolled. I liked that!

Quiet Protectionist Rip
Off

By Charles H |

Quiet North Beach area. Tybee beach is NOT pet friendly which is upsetting. Paid parking for beach and ALL over the island is just another way to extract $$ from visitors as are the speed cameras
set at 35 mph and the 30 patrol cars running radar.
Tybee Island is not visitor friendly . I own rental property on the island and I’m constantly amazed that people continue to return here. City council is run by protectionist for the island’s minimal permanent population while most of the island is owned by rental investors who cannot vote for more “ friendly “ atmosphere. This is from a 70+ year old not a 35 yr old .

A Fun Place That Has It All!!

By TimeToTravel2468 |

We enjoyed our visit and loved the beach and restaurants. There are many nice beaches to explore. Sting Rays was our favorite restaurant, right down town.

A good beach stop

By wendyandtyler |

This beach was easy to get to from Savannah, and the children had fun playing there. Although there are restrooms, there are no feetwashing stations, or changing areas, so you're bringing sand back in your car. Also, it costs $4 to park everywhere around the beach (even street parking). Just something to plan for. We went here and to Hilton Head when we were in Savannah and I would recommend the extra half hour to go to Hilton Head.

Good day.

By ASVACATIONLOVER |

The beach was clean and even though it was a busy day social distancing was easy. The lifeguards were also very diligent in their jobs. Very pleasant experience. Down side was having to pay to park because you're forced to pick the amount of time you will spend at the beach. Felt like we were being rushed. Also the lack of showers to wash the sand off your feet was disappointing.

Perfect Picnic Beach

By KarenM070 |

Although a lot of shops and restaurants on Tybee Island are closed in February, the beach is always there. Beautiful picnic lunch setting. Sunshine, gently lapping waves and clean, smooth sand soothe away your worries.

Very nice experience

By Vcals |

I enjoyed myself with my family at Tybee Island beach. The water is warmer this time of the year than where I’m from in New York. Space is limited so make sure you arrive before the crowds and make sure you bring all proper beach equipment with you (towels, umbrellas, etc). Only downside is that parking space is limited and the metered parking is expensive. Still worth it if you are in the area.

Tybee Beach

By Kaerianae |

Beach was nice. Not too many people out, it was off season though. Very nice fishing pier on the south beach area, beach was clean, very little trash.

Breathtaking

By lorraine c |

One of the best things that happened while I was on TYbee beach this Labor Day was watching a gentleman catch fish wow the waves were coming in and every time a wave would come in he would get another fish on his hook it was fascinating I loved it Tybee has some of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets and it’s always such a wonderful place to be and close to my home in Atlanta. And I kid you not the water felt as warm as the water in the Bahamas it was perfect

Stayed two months but one week would of been enough.

By D Martin B |

#1 Interstate roads to Savanah are terrible, #2 to get to Tybee Island you have to drive thru downtown Savanah, #3 Tybee Island parking enforces parking 24x7 every day of the year, #4 Put money in the parking meters or get a $50 parking fine, #5 Remember Tybee Island police aggressively pass out parking tickets.
Best of Tybee Island was eating at Bubba Gumbo's at Tybee Island Marina (it's a local restaurant not the national chain) and located just after you exit the last bridge and before you enter Tybee Island. The other restaurant we liked was Carey Hillard in Savannah.

My new favorite place!

By mandadawn22 |

What a laid back and lovely beach. One of the best beach trips I’ve been on. Will definitely be back.

Beach Day

By Sally |

We enjoyed our day trip to Tybee Island. Easy access to the beach with plenty of signage telling us where to go. We rented chairs/umbrella from Burke’s rentals. Chairs were already set up and they came and placed umbrella for us (easy-peasy). We were close to the pavilion and bathrooms. The water was perfectly refreshing. Area seemed clean. Water was a little murky so we couldn’t see the bottom but sand was nice (not very rocky). Overall, an enjoyable beach day.

WORST BEACH IN THE UNITED STATES

By Madison Timmons |

GO ANYWHERE BUT HERE!!

I am a Savannah local, and I avoid Tybee island like the plague. The code enforcement there are horrible. They are lurking to give citations for anything and they are NOT cheap( lowest is $250). There is no clear signage for what they deem to be “illegal”, most of which are normal things people do on the beach. It is very clear that most of the city’s economy relies on citations and parking tickets. They also tell you that you can fight the citation, but when you call the offices during business hours you get send straight to voicemail! Not worth it to visit a filthy beach in a run down town.

Very disappointing.

By Christine W |

Was quite surprised how dirty the beach and town are. We were so thankful it was a day trip and we were not staying the night. Rough crowd.

What charm and character!

By edsilver315 |

Wow, what a surprise. We live in New York and visited Tybee while on a trip to Savannah. We planned to stay a couple nights and ended up staying for a month! The community has so much charm and character — like Cape Cod meets the Caribbean — and the north end in particular is so peaceful. We can't wait to come back.

Loved the ocean and beach...but beware of jelly fish

By Sally |

Girls (ages 10-17) went out to beach early morning, late evening and played in surf.
When we went out mid day-the jellyfish began stinging. Not enough to leave the beach, but left welts like a bee sting.

Avoid this place at all costs if possible ! To say they are obsessed with parking here is an understatement.

By Wreyno52 |

Thought we were going to a nice beach near Savannah to get away from the cold and snow of upstate NY for a few weeks. Didn’t realize we were actually going to Savannah’s largest and most expensive parking lot. We have travelled extensively and I can honestly say this is one of the most inhospitable places we’ve ever been. There is no free parking on Tybee Island, and it’s not cheap, $3.50 an hour with a minimum of 2 hours if you decide to stop and feed the meter. There’s an app though which is slightly less expensive but believe me when I say almost every square inch of the place has a meter or requires payment if you happen to want to pull over and look at something. Out of curiosity I looked up Tybee Islands annual budget which is appx $34 million. More than $5 million is generated in parking fees, I couldn’t find info on parking fines but can imagine it’s substantial as most of the bloated police force there exists to hand out fines and speeding tickets. I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before some enterprising Tybee official comes up with portable parking meters you must take out to place beside you beach chair so they can profit from that as well. My advice, run away, as fast and as far away as possible.

Tourist trap

By snicklefritz |

Went to spend a short time on the beach. Discovered you have to pay to park everywhere in the town. So I decided to pay four dollars for the hour they wanted. When went to pay said minimum was two hours, so eight dollars to spend less and a half hour on the beach. Went to a convenient store to use the bathroom which they didn’t have. Says it is pet friendly but no dogs on beach. Not very tourist friendly

A great family beach

By Angela C |

I loved that we were able to rent beach chairs and an umbrella on Sunday. It was cool but the kids loved the beach. They were so happy that they went back a second time despite the cool weather.

Good Day at the Beach

By MGQ |

There are basically two beaches with many entrances on Tybee Island...the north Beach and the South Beach. Both have large parking lots with a fee for parking.
There appears to be more to do at the North Beach but if you're just looking for a nice relaxing day at the beach, we preferred the South Beach. It was much quieter and easier to access. Both beaches are wide and spacious.

South End of the Beach

By TrayBN |

We used public parking to check out the south end of the beach. Pay for your ticket at the kiosk and put it on your dashboard. This section of beach is away from the crowds near the pier. It was very clean, fresh and relaxing.

Hoped for more

By wcc6 |

Went on a Tuesday. Not much to see. Parking is $4 per hour. Ate at a restaurant that advertised best seafood on the island. But, the fried shrimp was dripping in grease. Several shops appeared closed. Thought we would spend a day there, only stayed for about an hour. Not real walkable as things are very far apart.

Great beach

By BrianBoru7 |

We go to Tybee for the beach. It is beautiful, not too crowded, even during spring break, and the water is warm. We were there in March. The locals say that it is cold, but for California refugees, it is warm (63 degrees). The air temp was a bit cool for swimming, though (68 degrees). The only drawback: parking is tight, and you may have to pay to park, unless you want to walk a bit.

Happy little beach community

By Amy S |

What can I say….. Tybee Island is such a joyful little beach town. Smiles from everyone you meet and the local food was delicious. You can’t help but be happy when you are here.
From the visit to the lighthouse, to time spent on the beaches, I had such a good feeling all day.
Bonus: the island has their own parking app that is wonderfully easy and convenient. No feeding meters - Score!!

Awesome place to visit

Very nice beach and well keep and easy to get too. The pier. Was great to visit and the beach was very clean and lots of shops and places to eat near by wish we would have had more time.

So Relaxing at Twin Palms, Tybee Island, Ga.

By Sue |

This quaint cottage is behind the owner's property. It is the perfect size for 1-2 people. I loved it! All one room except for bathroom and closet. There is a kitchenette, dining area, love seat, queen bed, tv. wifi, and porch. Owners have beach chairs, beach towels, beach bag, and beach cart if you need them. They are extremely pleasant people who respect your privacy but are also so nice to talk to. It was such a relaxing vacation. I stayed 2 weeks. Close to inlet and ocean. Located at south end of the island. I walked everywhere on the island. No car necessary! Plenty of places to walk to for meals. I did have a rental car and went into Savannah 3 different days. Loved Savannah, too! I would definitely go again. I went the first 2 weeks of May so no crowds or school age kids. The weather was warm, hot some days. I can't say enough about this cute cottage.

First Time Visit

Awesome place to visit!! Quiet and cute!! We hung out on the pier most of the time, talking with the locals. Very relaxing and I definitely recommend this to people who want to go somewhere and just chill. We climbed the lighthouse (photo attached) it was amazing!!! If you enjoy history you will enjoy this whole experience, the man in the museum is very knowledgeable. I can’t wait to go back!

Extortion at tybee island

By Ken C |

Monday started as planned, headed out just before 7 am to catch the sunrise with our pups. This would turn out to be a horrible decision; while we were walking them, we were approached by a woman in a side-by-side. The woman rolled up to my wife and me and told us that dogs were not allowed on the beach, and was a citation. Please note, this woman acted like a "Karen", and was not that of an official, nor did she identify herself as a code enforcement officer. We proceeded to exit the beach and walk down the street where we were met by 2 Tybee Island Police Officers. I was asked why I walked away and told the officer that we were instructed that dogs were not allowed on the beach so we left. The other officer asked if I had my wallet, all while a 3rd officer came from the beach in the wrong direction with the woman from the side-by-side. She exited the vehicle pointing at me stating "Yes that's him" followed by "I have him on my body cam" This was followed by I don't have my citations book here as the officer told her that she would write the ticket. Please note I have been cited for 3 dogs; I was only walking 2.

Beautiful View

This is the best Vacation ever wonderful view on the beach walking distance to food and dinning in to eat shopping

Very quiet

Hardly anyone here at spring break. We have the whole beach along with maybe 20 other people. Town is laid back and everyone is very friendly. Quick trip to visit Savannah as well.

Whole island is a parking trap.

By Scott B |

Parking tickets. Refused to spend a dime on this island after trying to pay for parking with their app 3 times. Paid more in parking tickets in one day than the rental house. Rat hole.

Nice beach

By Robin M |

We visited the North Beach on a cold February day. The beach was quiet and clean. There were many seashells on the beach. Just off the beach we saw a place to change into swimsuits. Everything else was closed.

The parking lot near the beach has meters to pay. We tried putting quarters in it, but they didn't seem to register. We finally had to use a credit card to pay for parking. It didn't give us a receipt as the directions said it would. I found out later that we paid $7 for parking. That's crazy.

Bad

By carey h |

I have never been to a resort town that charged $4.00 an hour for parking, anywhere! That's ridiculous! What does this town do w/there property taxes! Will continue to do my beach vacations in NC and all our beaches in NC are dog friendly.. Would not recommend Tybee Island, GA to anyone and the old lady at the visitors center was just rude!

Great beaches no crowd

We stayed on the North Beach and it was lovely. Everything closed super early though and that made dining hard.

The most popular beach in this area

By Jim W. |

We left our hotel close to downtown Savannah at 8:30 a.m. and were at this beach just before 9 a.m. The signage isn't that good, but if you enter around 14th Street (turning left toward the ocean) there is a large pay-lot behind the hotel there. They have set up plastic barriers to make it a one-way entrance. The fee to park here is $3.50 per hour with a 2-hour minimum.

There is a short boardwalk from the parking lot over some dunes and out to the beach. Arriving early, we had our choice of spots at which to plant our umbrella. The beach filled up noticeably over the next couple of hours, though and is likely crowded after lunch.

At this spot, you are about a quarter mile north of a large pier. It didn't seem to have much going on that day (a Friday) and maybe not at all during Covid, but it looked like there may have been some food vendors, etc. there at one time (and possibly small concerts as well?).

This is a nice spot to pass a relaxing morning. It was hot and humid, but that was expected here in August. We saw several dolphins just offshore.

When we left, we took advantage of a set of shower heads on a post to rinse off some sand. They also have a row of trailer-based restrooms that are convenient for changing clothes before you leave.

For this area, this is a great beach.

Great oceanbeach

This is a beautiful beach that can be enjoyed by all ages. We got off the beaten path on the North Beach where we could fish and the grandkids could enjoy the ocean. It is a great area to see dolphins and on the channel side beautiful sunsets.

Beach Without Sunset

By Leslie W |

Nice large beach on south with great pier area but there is no sunset. Have never been to a beach that didn’t have a sunset. However the pier did have food and drinks. South Beach has restaurants close by. Rock house had the best food and service. Awesome fresh grouper sandwich. So good went their twice and ordered it.

Funky Quaint Beach Town

We went over for the day enjoyed the beach and rode bikes all over the place. It is a very nice beach town. If you are in the area, I suggest visiting.

Great beach

By eagledress85 |

We took our annual beach vacation and chose Tybee Island this year. We arrived on Thursday and left on Monday. I'm glad we did it that way because on Saturday and Sunday the beach was packed!! We stayed at the Brass Rail and could see the beach from our balcony. It also was in walking distance to almost everything we wanted to do. No dogs are allowed on the beach due to nesting turtles. Great place to take your family for a getaway!

Beauty on the Beach !

By febs217 |

Relaxing beauty! On the beach off seventh street. People friendly with families. Nice clean and away from noise of downtown. Went twice and would visit again.

Okay, we saw it. Won't be back.

By lyssasmom |

The beach is nice enough but the town has unfortunately lost its charm. Kitschy tourist traps and a serious lack of parking really detract from what could be a lovely destination spot. There are vacation rental properties everywhere full of people looking to party. Saw one woman passed out on the front lawn next to the sidewalk. Just not our jam.

Clean beach

Overall beach experience was great. More folks than expected in early April. The pier and the restaurants were a welcomed surprise.

First Trip

By CookiesMom |

Visiting Savannah for our firs trip, and decided to drive over to Tybee Island. We didn't know much about it, and decided to go to the North Beach. Arrived mid-morning, and it was starting to get crowded. Parking was in a very dusty, unpaved, pay to park lot which was a bit of a turn off for us. Beach was pretty, but we were ready to leave in less than an hour. My expectations were different than what we experienced, but I mark that up to my fault for not doing more research and being no very prepared.

Awful

No public restrooms it’s inhumane it’s a run down ghetto place homes and hotels raggedy any good reviews is a lie plus no parking

Is Tybee worth the trip?

By Timothy B |

I’ve lived in Savannah my entire life and grew up going to Tybee. Tybee is well known for being a laid back beach with a tight knit community but coming from someone who’s been going my entire life, Tybee is one of the last beaches I’d ever recommend visiting for many reasons. I have never been in trouble with the police however I’ve heard countless stories from people I personally know, whom are law abiding citizens, being harassed by local law enforcement. The sheer amount of police employed on a 3x3 mile island is laughable and makes you wonder why they are trying so hard to attack tourists with citations and fines. On another note, in an effort to keep Tybee the way it’s always been the city doesn’t allow businesses that would thrive and make the “Tybee experience” worth it. The only businesses open are restaurants with mediocre food for a ridiculous price or are a tourist trap with cheap memorabilia marked up 1000%. The water is dirty, the beaches are filled with Karen’s, and traffic is the most poorly managed I’ve ever seen anywhere. Just make the trip to Hilton Head or Jekyll Island you will thank me later.

Beautiful

This beach is very pretty, sand is soft, and ocean is warm! It's very crowded tho. Get there early!!

Best beach in Georgia. Children friendly. North Beach is the best. Take your own 💺 and umbrella. Rental is pricey.

Parking scam

By Walker |

The parking app is a scam. I downloaded the app , paid to park and got a ticket. When i called the next day I was informed that my plate # was typed in where the vehicle nickname was and that I had to pay the ticket. I have been turned over to collections because i refuse to pay money i do not owe. On the positive side , the collection agency was supper nice and put me on the do not disturb list after I made them aware that I had no intentions of paying the scam ticket.

Officers targeting tourists

By Nicole P |

While visiting my gf I had a prepacked cooler with a few glass beers in it. Didn’t think anything about it. Waved to the women officer when she passed. On her way back she handed me a ticket for $300 for glass on the beach.
As someone who is working toward being a police officer I was appalled at her behavior towards me. At first I felt maybe discrimination as I was the only Hispanic person on the beach, and not the only one with glass bottles but then saw the many reviews on here and it appears they target tourists.
While I likely will have to pay the insane fine I will be filing a complaint and advice anyone who comes to this page to complain to do the same. These officers are giving all officers a bad name. The women could have socialized and welcomed me with a warning and thank me for visiting instead I will not be returning or spending my $ here.
I understand the rule and concerns with glass on the beach now but a lower fine for first violation or a warning would be more suitable.

First time in Tybee

Beach was great. Not crowded at all was each to do social distancing. The waves were not rough was able to enjoy water without gettin beat by the waves.

Beautiful day

Tybee Island beaches are beautiful. The water is very clean and relatively calm for swimming. People were respectful which was very refreshing. Bathrooms were available nearby which is always a plus!

It's A Beach

By drwatsonjd |

Maybe by low country standards it's great, but I wasn't impressed. Limited shops. Limited parking. We spent 40 mins there and left.

Parking fees are absurd, avoid the pain and go to a better beach.

By Andrew W |

Went to walk on beach with some friends for 45 minutes in November 2024. Knew it would be quick so didn’t pay the $8 minimum parking fee. Got back to the car and was presented with a $80 ticket. A ticket is understandle but not $80 in the winter. Parking prices are absurd for a mid beach. Go to Hilton Head or any other beach and avoid these fines. Maybe Tybee would be more popular (and profitable) without the crazy island wide parking fees.

Well worth going to

By David B |

Tybee Island is a nice beach. It has a good bit of touristy shops, but nobody came out to try to entice me into one and I appreciated that. It is not terribly far from Savannah GA so there will be plenty that you can do.

A sleepy little town that is only on the map because of a Miley Cyrus Movie

By Macgregor S |

Hotel Tybee is one of 3 hotels worth staying at. Had a horrible weekend mainly due to weather. Tried for breakfast in the morning, hotel advertised included but stated could not provide during check-in. Local restaurants had sign saying closed temporarily and parking meter failed to print a receipt. Out 7 bucks there, no big deal.

I would not return to this area considering the many other beaches along the coast. One positive note.... Tybee Bean (coffee shop) had friendly staff and great coffee.

Beautiful but beware of shipping wake

By L5652FOpatriciac |

The best part of Tybee was the natural beauty of the dunes. There is rich vegetation and it creates a sense of the untouched. We stayed on the north end which is super quiet but even the busier south side was less commercialized than most beach towns. Beaches are not dog friendly- we had originally planned to bring our doggies with us to the beach- as there are nesting turtles. It is also a resting spot for migratory birds. We visited the light house and local fort. Great sense of history at both including toys, furnitures, and books at the light keeper’s home. My only critique would not prevent me from going again but I would like to share something. The shipping containers pass by into the Savannah River. There are signs which warn of increased wake but we expected this from out at sea. Two ships passed in the Savannah and the resulting water displacement caused a mini tsunami from the river side of the beach. The life guards came and warned us and everyone was safe but I think it’s helpful to know what yo look for.

Hometown beach

By Lu S |

Tybee is my hometown beach, that being said I feel we need some clarity.
“The water is brown” but it really isn’t! The coastal shelf here is shallow for a very long ways out into the ocean so it stirs up the sand on The bottom more and creates a darker appearance to the waters here. However, if you take a water bottle and fill it up I promise you it’s clear :)
If anyone comes to the Savannah area at all and doesn’t know that this entire area is a drinking town..God be with you is all I can say. 5pm starts at 10am around here no matter where you are lol
Yes Tybee is a bit rough around the edges but that’s how we like it! You don’t need to dress up or worry about looking your best around here(every BODY will feel comfortable sitting in their bathing suit on Tybee)! Also great people watching!
Tybee can totally be family friendly! There are two amazing parks that have so much for kiddos and families to enjoy there is also the lighthouse, fort screven museum, marine science center, fort Pulaski, jet ski rentals, kayak rentals, and always the dolphin tours lol you can also charter a boat for the day and go to another island(highly recommend Daufuskie Island) or go fishing!
When you’re here you’re on Tybee Time so just kick back (have a cocktail) & enjoy !

Very Unpleasent

By MarkAShryock |

We went in at block 9. Bathrooms were so far away. I do not understand why city would not put a porta potty outside at entrance to beaches for people like myself past 65 and who are on medication and need to use a restrooms. We also went to five different business who would not allow us to use their restroom, despite us spending money there. We had to cut our tip short and drive on out of Tybee. I was told later there are three bathrooms somewhere and another at main entrance to beach. We will never return to Tybee. We found the business owner's on Tybee to be rude, unkind, uncaring, and yet wanting our money. I am sure there are kind business owners there, but we did not experience this.

Run down, overpriced, and felt like I was taken advantage of...

By Sherpa66584783275 |

Drove from Savannah today to spend the night. So far not too impressed. From the hotels we saw, many were old and run down. Prices for many of the hotels are very high. Went to pick up a pizza in town and had to pay for parking. Cost of parking was $8, didn't see a cheaper option for the parking. So to pick up a small $10 pizza cost $8 for parking. From talking to the receptionist at the hotel we are staying at, weekend hotels increase dramatically.

We've been traveling down the east coast, stopping at many beaches along the way. Many other nicer beaches on the east cost with much nicer accommodations for a far better price.

Only thing that likely keeps the Tybee Beach area going is folks from the Savannah area don't want to travel far, and have the extra money to spend there.

First time visiting and will be the last time visiting.
